Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) reported: I donated a pedigree horse in the path of Allah. Its possessor made it languish. I thought that he would sell it at a cheap price. I asked Allah’s Messenger (SAW) about it, whereupon he said: Don’t buy it and do not get back your charity, for one who gets back the charity is like a dog who swallows its vomit. Sahih Muslim 1620a

Was Napoleon a Muslim?

Napoleon’s justi cation for the invasion of Egypt was twofold. e rst reasoning was in relation to the assertion that the French purpose was to cleanse Egypt of a regime that had brought only oppression, tyranny, exploitation and misrule to the Egyptian people. \Hence, the French were there to bring a revolution for those who were unable to do so for themselves, this local revolution reverberating the freedom and civilization spirit of the French Revolution. e French were there to extinguish barbarism and ignite sophistication and progress (civilization). e universal standards of virtue, reason and knowledge were the brass ring. e second justi cation was appertaining to a popular claim that the French were not hostile to Islam and its holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that they did not come to oppose, but uphold, them, and that they, on the whole, did not come to destroy, but to build. us, Napoleon stressed in his rst proclamation to the Egyptians: “O ye Egyptians, they may say to you that I have not made an expedition hither for any other object than that of abolishing your religion; but this is a pure falsehood and you must not give credit to it, but tell the slanderers that I have not come to you except for the purpose of restoring your rights from the hands of the oppressors and that I more than the Mamluks, serve God and revere His Prophet Muhammad and the glorious Qur’an. And tell them also that all people are equal in the eyes of God and the only circumstances which distinguish one from the other are reason, virtue and knowledge…Tell the people that the French also are true Muslims, and in con rmation of this they invaded Rome and destroyed there the Papal See, which was always exhorting the Christians to make war with Islam. And then they went

expelled the Knights, who claimed that God the Exalted required them to ght the Muslims.” (Al-Jabarti’s Chronicle of the First Seven Months of the French Occupation of Egypt).

Napoleon as an admirer, defender, or manipulator of Islam at is why Napoleon is generally portrayed as a serious “admirer” and at times also “defender” of Islam. Some yet contended that he eventually embraced Islam, like what one of his generals, Jacques-Abdullah Menou, had done. is is how Napoleon addressed his troops prior to the invasion: “ e people amongst whom we are going to live are Mahometans. e rst article of their faith is this: ‘ ere is no God but God, and Mahomet is His prophet.’ Do not contradict them. Behave to them as you have behaved to the Jews - to the Italians. Pay respect to their mu is, and their Imams, as you did to the rabbis and the bishops. Extend to the ceremonies prescribed by the Koran and to the mosques the same toleration which you showed to the synagogues, to the religion of Moses and of Jesus Christ. e Roman legions protected all religions. You will nd here customs di erent from those of Europe. You must accommodate yourselves to them. e people amongst whom we are to mix differ from us in the treatment of women; but in all countries he who violates is a monster. Pillage enriches only a small number of men; it dishonours us; it destroys our resources; it converts into enemies the people whom it is our interest to have for friends” ( e French View of the Events in Egypt: Memoirs by Louis Antoine Fauvelet De Bourrienne, Private Secretary to General Bonaparte). Napoleon was ready to stop at nothing in his e orts to succeed and make his ideas gain currency. One of his rather extreme attempts was his projection of himself and his conquest of Egypt as the ful lment

Ruling on working in a job selling counterfeit clothing and paying a bribe to bring it into the country

Question: 199307

Iwork in the eld of trade and import with a shipping agent. is agent brings these particular goods in by means of bribery.

Please note that the goods in question are counterfeit clothes bearing the logos of internationally-know brands such as Lacoste and Adidas, and that is not allowed.

Is my business halaal or haraam?

Supervised by Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al-Munajjid

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

If these items of clothing are sold on the basis that they are manufactured by those internationally-known brands with those famous logos, when in fact that is not the case, then selling them and dealing in them is deceiving and cheating the purchasers. All of that is prohibited according to the teachings of our religion.

e Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever deceives (people) does not belong to me.” Narrated by Muslim (102).

e matter becomes more sinful if they are brought into the country by unlawful means and haraam bribes that are paid in order to bring them in. It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah adDaa’imah (11/73): It is not permissible to sell counterfeit goods claiming that they are original, and it is not permissible to deal in them or distribute them to shops, because that comes under the heading of deceiving the Muslims,

of a prophecy which had its short-term and long-term e ects. For that reason, Napoleon propagated a sort of political foreordination and wished to thus exact a degree of civilian fatalism. e whole design was the consequence of a providence of one God to whom both the people and Napoleon belonged.

Napoleon tried to project himself as a saviour and a Mahdi-like messianic gure. He was a deliverer of the Egyptians, insinuating the lexis the people and their land were familiar with, and thus aiming to strike a chord with the majority. By speaking generally of a diktat of God to destroy the enemies of Islam and to break the crosses by his own hand, Napoleon yet wished to portray himself as the saviour of Islam and Muslims en bloc. e ful lment of this prophecy was supposed to serve as the climax of God’s plans intended for the world. It would have connoted the dawn of a new era, of a new world order.

Al-Jabarti reported - based on a letter from Napoleon to the Egyptian peoplethat Napoleon wanted to quell a civil discord. In the letter he informed the people that those who opposed him were in fact opposing the destiny of God. Every sensible person knew that the French acts were God’s will and divine decree and “he who doubts this is stupid and devoid

cause that comes under the heading of cooperating in sin and transgression, and consuming people’s wealth unlawfully. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): {do not cooperate in sin and transgression} [al-Maa’idah 5:2]

{And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly} [al-Baqarah 2:188].

Moreover, that also causes harm to those who sell the original, noncounterfeit goods, and is competing unlawfully with them. Based on that, selling these goods without informing the purchaser that they are counterfeit is haraam and is a cause of blessing (barakah) being erased from one’s business dealings. End quote.

erefore what you must do is stop dealing in these fraudulent clothes, whether you are selling them or helping to bring them into the country by any means, because this comes under the heading of helping in sin and transgression.

We ask Allah to make it easy for you to nd another way of doing lawful business. And Allah knows best.

of perception.” What Napoleon was up to in Egypt was a divine command since the beginning of time. “Moreover He (Almighty God) decreed from eternity that I (Napoleon) shall come from the West to the land of Egypt for the purpose of destroying those who have acted tyrannically in it and to carry out the tasks which He set upon me. And no sensible man will doubt that all this is by virtue of God’s decree and will.”

Napoleon even said that the verses of the Qur’an foretold his deeds, and every Muslim knows that “the words of God in His book are truth and righteousness which are inevitable in their realization.”

He further professed that he had some miraculous powers one of which was bordering on knowing the unseen. He said that it was in his power to expose what was in the heart of every person, for he knew the nature of man and what was concealed in his heart at the very moment he looked upon him even though he did not state or utter what that person was hiding. is was a special gi from God in order for Napoleon to be able to enlighten, lead and control his subjects.

Going against him, therefore, meant going against God and His providence. For more details visit at:

Kevin Falcon votes against Eby’s action to increase housing supply

On November 23rd, BC Liberal leader Kevin Falcon and the B.C. Liberals voted against two of Premier David Eby’s measures to increase housing supply and help people a ord a home. e Housing Supply Act is designed to kickstart new housing construction by giving the provincial government the ability to set municipal housing development targets. It gives the Minister of Housing the authority to ensure compliance to make sure housing gets built, should municipalities with the highest need struggle to

deliver enough housing.

e Building Strata Statutes Amendment Act would prevent strata’s from banning rentals in their buildings and end unfair age restrictions. In areas where government has data through the Speculation and Vacancy Tax, there are approximately 2,900 empty condos that cannot be rented out because strata rules prevent them from renting out their condo - and we expect there are more in other areas of the province. Falcon and the B.C. Liberals voted against both pieces

of legislation. Falcon is also opposed to the Speculation and Vacancy Tax, which has delivered 20,000 rental housing units to the market in Metro Vancouver. Housing Minister Murray Rankin said, “It’s disappointing to see Kevin Falcon standing in the way of David Eby’s action to increase housing supply. Kevin Falcon is more concerned with protecting people who are pro ting from the housing crisis than with helping British Columbians a ord a home.”

Liberal MLA Dan Ashton called to “postpone” Housing Supply Act and Renee Merri eld also criticized the bill, saying we don’t need “a heavier hammer” on housing a ordability.

While the B.C. Liberals try to delay and stand in the way of action, other British Columbians are lining up to support it. Here’s what other people are saying about the changes to strata rules: “When things are this severe, I think we need to be making use of every unit that’s available. A new beginning?

aa nahi rahi, tabdeeli aa gayee hai (change isn’t coming, it’s already arrived).

Tabdeeli

And no, the PTI has little to do with it this time around. There is a change of guard in Pindi; the old chief is about to retire and a new one has already been announced after much chaos and confusion in the political sphere.

But now that it’s done, we can’t stop talking about the nayee (new) establishment. Such is our grasp of events and politics that when an individual retires, we speak as if the entire ‘establishment’ has been born anew.

While it may just be a precaution on the part of those of us compelled to talk nonstop about politics, it perhaps also provides an insight into our ‘establishment’.

However, even as we get ready for Gen Qamar Bajwa to hand over the baton to Gen Asim Munir and nd some golf clubs to swing around, we will continue to discuss and debate his legacy for quite some time.

And in the discussions already taking place, many are laying great emphasis on the outgoing general’s claim of staying away from politics. This notion has red the imagination of many democrats among our midst, who rightly hope the ‘new establishment’ will continue this policy and let the hapless politicians gure out some basic issues such as how to talk to each other.

Will the establishment consider two issues, neither

immediate nor apolitical but which need introspection?

But not for me such high idealistic hopes. Perhaps age has nally dimmed, if not erased, the idealism which is the mark of not just the youth but also the young at heart. Instead, my wish list for the nayee establishment begins with a di erent assumption. Neither do they include obvious issues such as the role it may play with regard to the date of the coming election or the latter’s fairness. Or whether the ‘new’ ones will be able to or even want to heal the rift created in Punjab. These issues can be left for the television discussions, where they will be thrashed out, and then some, over the coming days and months. The question is, in all this confusion: will the new establishment on the block also consider two issues, neither immediate nor apolitical but which can do with some introspection — for neither can be attributed to individuals but larger policies?

The rst has to do with Balochistan. The province has been in the grip of unrest since 2006. It is a part of Pakistan but since the death of Akbar Bugti in August 2006 it has been associated with words that sit uncomfortably with all of us. These are words which we have not eased into or that have been associated with less negative connotations since they rst became part of our conversations — ‘missing’, ‘disappeared’, ‘mutilated’, ‘alienated’. But in the past 15 years or so, while the hurt or discomfort appears to be easing or worsening, at di erent moments, there is little evidence of it dissipating entirely.

In this decade and a half, the

province has witnessed di erent sets of politicians in charge. It has experienced a chief minister such as Aslam Khan Raisani, and then a mostly nationalist government headed by an aam aadmi, Dr Abdul Malik, and now a youthful chief minister, Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, whose a liation is as open as his aversion to appearing in public. For what else would explain his conspicuous absence during the recent rains? But the province seems unchanged — the violence continues, the youth remain alienated and the dreams of game changers, such as the Gwadar port or CPEC, remain simply that: dreams. Is there something wrong with how the province is seen and dealt with? Why was it so easy for Ziaul Haq to bring calm to the province after the unrest fomented during the Bhutto era, and why is it proving so intractable now? Do those in charge need to do some soul-searching, and can the new establishment take some tentative steps in this regard? On to the next issue. While Balochistan is an area which carries the stamp of no one individual, the story of our economy is di erent. Its ‘successes’ have, despite its fragile state, been claimed by many, including the outgoing men. From FATF to IMF to the loans from friends and brothers, the establishment doesn’t just have a role to play, it is also not averse to talking about it. Time and again, we have heard of how hard Gen Bajwa worked in this regard.

The trips abroad, the phone calls, the visits of ambassadors, all of this is part of the role played as we needed all hands on deck for the economy. But the nayee

establishment needs to think why our entire diplomacy, especially by them, can only manage to ensure us loans and rollovers enough to survive months at best and avert a default.

Is it possible to approach the issue di erently so that the establishment doesn’t have to make these trips and ask for these favours? And who can ensure the loans and rollovers transform into dollars earned, a healthy current account de cit and a more equitable economy, at least by South Asian standards? A charter of economy may not be the answer here, just like the Charter of Democracy didn’t really deliver a stronger, more democratic political system.

The economic bene ts of such calls and diplomacy are now offering diminishing returns, as the world changes — be it for a United States, where Afghanistan is no longer a central concern, or for a Middle East, which is losing interest in fragile Muslim countries that do not have the capacity for investment and are only looking for loans.

Can the establishment make this transformation to a more modern economy, or at least identify how the ball can be set rolling?

The answer does not lie in nding a person who promises miracles but in understanding what is hindering the process.

Is it even possible to begin these conversations, which might prove a tad uncomfortable?

home.” Dahya says families who use their food bank are also connected with case workers who speak their language. “Food usually allows people to build good relationships,” he said. “Once we build relationships, then we can help them in di erent aspects to progress toward self-reliance.”

Nathaniel David Jessup, convicted of manslaughter and dismemberment, has long history of violent crime. B.C. Crown prosecutors are seeking a rare dangerous offender assessment for a man who killed and dismembered a woman in Creston, B.C., in 2015.

Nathaniel David Jessup, 35, was convicted of manslaughter and o ering an indignity to human remains in B.C. Supreme Court in Kamloops on Friday, following a trial in Cranbrook last summer.

In a written judgment, Justice James Williams described the crime as “macabre, callous and of such a nature that it would shock any sense of decency” but ruled there was not enough evidence to convict Jessup of second-degree murder.

The massive hypocrisy of the West’s World Cup ‘concerns’

As the old saying goes, look in the mirror before you judge others. United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently came out against a ban on rainbow armbands at the World Cup tournament in Qatar, which various European team captains had intended to sport in support of LGBTQ rights and against discrimination. Blinken agged the ban as “concerning” and a restriction on “freedom of expression”.

e secretary’s scolding came on the heels of another rather “concerning” development on the world stage: a mass

shooting at a gay nightclub in the US state of Colorado that killed ve people and wounded 18 others. is, in a country that fancies itself the global role model in terms of respect for freedom of expression, human rights, and all that good stu – and yet where it is becoming increasingly di cult for people to exercise their right to not be massacred at nightclubs, elementary schools, places of worship, shopping malls, and so on. In 2016, the US witnessed its worst mass shooting in history when 50 people were killed in an attack on a gay nightclub in

Orlando, Florida.

is year, an independent UN human rights expert found that LGBTQ rights in the US are “under a concerted attack” and being “deliberately undermined” by state governments. Add to this landscape the institutionalised racism and discrimination that constitutes “freedom” in the US, and it seems US o cials might have slightly more pressing matters to attend to on the home front than World Cup armbands.

COP27 Reaches Breakthrough Agreement on New “Loss and Damage” Fund for Vulnerable Countries

UN Climate Change News, 20 November 2022 – e United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 closed today with a breakthrough agreement to provide “loss and damage” funding for vulnerable countries hit hard by climate disasters. “ is outcome moves us forward,” said Simon Stiell, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary. “We have determined a way forward on a decades-long conversation on

funding for loss and damage – deliberating over how we address the impacts on communities whose lives and livelihoods have been ruined by the very worst impacts of climate change.” Set against a di cult geopolitical backdrop, COP27 resulted in countries delivering a package of decisions that rea rmed their commitment to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. e package also strengthened action by countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the inevitable impacts of climate change, as well as boosting the support of nance, technology and capacity building needed by devel-

oping countries. Creating a speci c fund for loss and damage marked an important point of progress, with the issue added to the ofcial agenda and adopted for the rst time at COP27.

Governments took the ground-breaking decision to establish new funding arrangements, as well as a dedicated fund, to assist developing countries in responding to loss and damage. Governments also agreed to establish a ‘transitional committee’ to make recommendations on how to operationalize both the new funding arrangements and the fund at COP28 next year. e rst meeting of the transitional committee is expected to take place before the end of March 2023. Parties also agreed on the institutional arrangements to operationalize the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage, to catalyze technical assistance to developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the ad-

verse e ects of climate change.

COP27 saw signi cant progress on adaptation, with governments agreeing on the way to move forward on the Global Goal on Adaptation, which will conclude at COP28 and inform the rst Global Stocktake, improving resilience amongst the most vulnerable. New pledges, totaling more than USD 230 million, were made to the Adaptation Fund at COP27. ese pledges will help many more vulnerable communities adapt to climate change through concrete adaptation solutions. COP27 President Sameh Shoukry announced the Sharm el-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda, enhancing resilience for people living in the most climate-vulnerable communities by 2030. UN Climate Change’s Standing Committee on Finance was requested to prepare a report on doubling adaptationnance for consideration at COP28 next year.

Our environment is constantly changing. ere is no denying that fact. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. With a massive in ux of natural disasters, warming and cooling periods, different types of weather patterns and much more, people need to be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is facing

“Environmental issues are de ned as problems with the planet’s systems (air, water, soil, etc.) that have developed as a result of human interference or mistreatment of the planet.”

Our planet is poised on the brink of a severe environmental crisis. Current environmental problems make us vulnerable to disasters and tragedies, now and in the future.

We are in a state of planetary emergency, with environmental problems piling up high around us. Unless we address the various issues prudently and seriously, we are surely doomed for disaster. Current environmental problems also require urgent attention.

20 Major Current Environmental Problems

1. Pollution

ere are 7 key types of pollution – air, water, soil, noise, radioactive, light and thermal and these are primary causes that a ect our environment in many ways. All these types of pollution are interlinked and in uence each other. erefore we need to tackle all of them together.

Pollution of air, water and soil requires millions of years to recoup. Industry and motor vehicle exhaust are the number one pollutants. Heavy metals, nitrates and plastic are toxins responsible for pollution.

While water pollution is caused by oil spill, acid rain, urban runo , air pollution is caused by various gases and toxins released by industries and factories and combustion of fossil fuels; soil pollution is majorly caused by industrial waste that deprives soil from essential nutrients.

3. Global Warming

Global warming has become an undisputed fact about our current livelihoods; our planet is warming up and we are de nitely part of the problem. However, this isn’t the only environmental problem that we should be concerned about. All across the world, people are facing a wealth of new and challenging environmental problems every day. Some of them are small and only a ect a few ecosystems, but others are drastically changing the landscape of what we already know.

Chinese authorities seek out Covid protesters

Chinese authorities have begun inquiries into some of the people who gathered at weekend protests against Covid-19 curbs, three people who were at the Beijing demonstrations told Reuters, as police remained out in numbers on the city’s streets. In one case, a caller identifying as a police o cer in the Chinese capital asked the protester to show up at a police station on Tuesday to deliver a written record of their activities on Sunday night.

In another, a student was contacted by their college and asked if they had been in the area where events took place and to provide a written account. “We are all desperately deleting our chat history,” one Beijing protester who declined to be identi ed, told Reuters. “ ere are just too many police. Police came to check the ID of one of my friends and then took her away. We don’t know why. A few hours later they released her. Beijing’s Public Security Bureau did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said rights and freedoms must be exercised within the framework of the law.

Simmering discontent with stringent Covid prevention policies three years into the pandemic ignited into broader protests in cities

Mainland China’s biggest wave of civil disobedience since President Xi Jinping took power a decade ago comes as the number of Covid-19 cases hit record daily highs and large parts of several cities face new lockdowns. A health o cial said complaints around Covid controls were mainly about their in exible implementation.

“ e problems highlighted by the public are not aimed at the epidemic prevention and control itself, but focus on simplifying prevention and control measures,” Cheng Youquan told reporters. Covid has spread despite China largely isolating itself from the world and demanding signi cant sacri ces from its population to comply with frequent testing and prolonged isolation.

Musk: Apple wants to block Twitter from its app store

Why the West hesitates to condemn racism?

It’s simple: support for Israel, the rightward political shi in the West, and the colonial roots of the global order.

When Josep Borrell recently described Europe as “a garden” and the rest of the world as “a jungle”, there was global outrage. However, it went relatively unnoticed that only a few days earlier many nations in the West also refused to take a public stand against racism.

In October, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a dra resolution against racism, xenophobia and intolerance. e resolution described colonialism and slavery as “grave violations of international law”. It asked former colonial and slave-trading states to, among other things, pay reparations “proportionate to the harms [they] committed”.

In all, 32 – mostly Latin American, African and Asian – out of 47 countries voted in its favour. Nine countries voted against the resolution: the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.

rightward shi in US and European domestic politics that makes even more liberal governments reluctant to accept external scrutiny of their countries’ track records. e West’s unwavering support of Israel and its apartheidlike policies targeting Palestinians also makes any unequivocal criticism of racism di cult for these countries. But there’s also a deeper reason: the role that racism and colonialism have played in shaping the current global order. Committing to reparative action for these past crimes could threaten the West’s privileged standing on the global stage.

Five ways the ‘motherhood penalty’ affects women at work

A er her second year as an executive at an Ontario non-pro t organization, Sara (who preferred to not give her last name, fearing recrimination) told her boss she was three months pregnant. He reacted “judgmentally,” she recalls. He said to her: “You just got married two months ago.”

When she returned from maternity leave, Sara said her job increased in scope, so she asked for a raise. “It’s really cheeky to ask for a raise when you took a year o ,” her boss said. “At one point a er asking for the raise, my supervisor said, ‘You should just go work somewhere else if you feel that way,’” Sara recalls. When she ultimately interviewed for a di erent job, Sara didn’t bring up the fact that she was a new mother. “I was too scared; I was afraid they wouldn’t hire me.” e recruiter had to reassure her that this new workplace “wasn’t hostile” toward parents.

Sara is like many women who face what is known as the “motherhood penalty.”

It’s the “systematic disadvantage that mothers face in terms of pay, perceived competence and bene ts compared to childless women and men,” says Joeli Brearley, the author of Pregnant en Screwed: e Truth About the Motherhood Penalty and How to Fix It. (Ms. Brearley, who was red two days a er informing her employer she was pregnant, later formed a non-pro t in the U.K. to ght the motherhood penalty.)

“Ending the motherhood penalty starts with acknowledging bias,” says Sherrie Nguyen, director of product marketing and founder and co-chair of the Parents and Caregivers Inclusion Resource Group at Indeed.

e motherhood penalty hurts women when it comes to compensation, hiring, taking leaves and promotions, a ecting ve particular aspects of a working mother’s career.

e pay gap

In Canada, having a child decreased a mother’s wages by ve cents an hour compared to women without children in 2015, according to a United Nations report. e UN Human Rights Committee report cited a concern about the persisting inequalities between women and men in Canada, in particular how it “disproportionately a ects low-income women, in particular minority and indigenous women.” e gap was more pronounced in Alberta and Nova Scotia. Part of that gap is likely due to the fact that mothers take the majority of family leave and, as a result, are absent from the workforce longer than fathers. Although Canadian parents have 40 weeks of parental leave ( ve speci cally for dads), only about a quarter of dads in Canada use that paternity leave (except in Quebec, which adopted a unique program called the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan in 2006, and approximately 93 per cent of fathers use it).

Some media outlets have gone as far as to dub it the “Qatarstrophe” but the public should question;

For full-time employees, there is a 16.1-percent di erence between annual median earnings of women relative to the annual median earnings of men, according to recent OECD data. In its ranking of more than 40 countries, Canada has the seventh-worst gender-pay gap...

From the very beginning, in 2010, fans wondered why Qatar was even chosen as the event host when it clearly did not have the infrastructure a World Cup host requires. Qatar needs 8 new stadiums, an airport expansion, a new metro, multiple hotels, and other key establishments all coming at an estimated cost of 220 billion US dollars.

It was quickly established that millions of migrant workers would be needed to build and service the event and FIFA would be responsible for those working in the stadiums and during tournament preparation. is is including transport and accommodations,

FIFA has the responsibility to identify and remedy any abuses in accordance with the United Nations Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights but despite repeated warnings from workers and civil society groups, they failed to impose strong conditions to protect workers. Osteoarthritis is one of many forms of arthritis and is sometimes referred to as ‘wear and tear’ arthritis. It is the most commonly seen form of arthritis in North America. Osteoarthritis is caused by an excessive breakdown of the cartilage that is found in the joints in our bodies. e more cartilage breaks down, the more symptoms will emerge.

Fortunately, osteoarthritis doesn’t a ect other organs in the body as many other forms of arthritis do. Most of the symptoms associated with this particular kind of arthritis only a ect the joints and the bones, but they can still be rather unpleasant. We’re going to explore the 10 most common symptoms of osteoarthritis today, so you can understand the condition a bit better.

Symptom #1: Tenderness And Pain

is is another reason that stretching is important for patients with osteoarthritis.

Symptom #4: Strange Sensations

tasks. is is largely because they lose a lot of the ability to move their joints in ranges of motion that are needed for daily tasks. is can happen because of the degrading cartilage in the bones, but it can get worse because the muscles around the joints will fall out of use if you don’t use them. is is another reason that it’s important to get your stretches in when you are struggling with osteoarthritis, and also to make a point of exercising as much as possible (while remaining within a comfortable range of motion).

Another thing that many people with osteoarthritis has a series of strange new sensations that aren’t necessarily good or bad. ey are a result of the changes that are made to the cartilage in the body.

Cartilage is intended to function sort of like a set of shocks in a vehicle. ey help the joints manage weight and pressure and make everything feel smooth. If you don’t have the necessary amount of cartilage, as seen in people with osteoarthritis, then you won’t have the same shock absorption that you would normally have.

Symptom #7: Deformities

together, you will begin to experience pain and discomfort, and this is especially true for the back.

Usually people won’t experience serious pain until the later phases of osteoarthritis. However, patients have noted that they experience pain and weakness even in the earlier phases of osteoarthritis. is pain can be accentuated if there is weight pressed on the vertebrae indirectly from the use of another joint or bone.

e deformity of cartilage can also be particularly problematic for the back, greatly impeding your range of motion.

Symptom #9: Joint Locking

Most forms of arthritis cause quite a bit of pain throughout the body. e most common places to experience pain are in the spine, neck, knees and hip regions. e pain is usually characterized with a deep ache. is usually occurs on a daily basis, and more so with prolonged activity whether it be sedentary or direct use of the a ected joint. e pain may be very sharp when moving the joint especially a er periods of not moving.

Tenderness, however, is a feeling of discomfort that you will experience when you press down on the joint. Both of these types of pain are quite common for people who have osteoarthritis.

Symptom #2: Sti Joints

is means that, basically, you’re going to start feeling your bones rub together at the joints. is won’t necessarily be painful, but it will certainly take some getting used to.

Symptom #5: Joint Cracking

Another common issue that arises in people who have had osteoarthritis for a while are deformities in the joints and bones. e joints are usually covered in a protective layer of cartilage that prevents damage from occurring. Unfortunately, when the cartilage wears out, it can become di cult and painful for a person to move their joints.

Joint locking, buckling, or ‘giving out’ of certain areas of your body can be particularly bothersome for people su ering from osteoarthritis. is is because of the weakening of the muscles around the joints.

e other symptom most commonly associated with osteoarthritis, as well as other forms of arthritis, is sti ness in the joints. While it’s fairly normal to experience a bit of sti ness in your joints early in the morning, if this becomes a consistent thing throughout the day, it could be a sign of an emerging problem like osteoarthritis. e joint sti ness is still likely to be worst in the morning for su erers of osteoarthritis, but fortunately it can be reduced if you power through it and do some stretching exercises in the morning. Make sure you stay uid during the day and don’t let your joints fall into disuse.

Symptom #3: In exibility

Many people who have osteoarthritis experience a lot of cracking in their joints that may or may not be di erent than the cracking that people hear when they pop their knuckles or ankles.

is is because the bones that are found in the joints rub together a lot which can cause strange noises to emerge and cause extra pressure to build up.

Symptom #6: Di culty Performing Tasks

As the cartilage degrades and the bones continue to rub against each other, spurs may emerge from the cartilage, creating strange and uncomfortable shapes. Joints will look less like they used to as these spurs grow in size, looking larger or out-of-place. Another reason for deformity is if the cartilage wears on one side of the joint more than another side of the joint causing an imbalance. Joints may also appear much larger due to in ammation and accumulation of uid. Bone spurs can also contribute to the pain and discomfort experienced by people su ering from the condition, especially in the ngers and hands. People su ering from serious osteoarthritis might have such serious deformities that their ngers bend at strange angles.

Symptom #8: Back Pain

is is especially true for the joints that support our body weight, like the knees and the ankles. People with osteoarthritis should be careful about their movements because it’s much easier for their knees to buckle, which can lead them to more serious injuries. is is another reason it’s important to stretch and exercise as much as possible.

Symptom #10: Heat In e Joints

One thing that people su ering from osteoarthritis will eventually experience is a decrease in their overall exibility. As the joints in their bodies become harder to use and they experience more sti ness and pain, there will also be some loss of mobility.

is means that people su ering from osteoarthritis will have a lesser range of motion than they did before. While this is a gradual process, it’s also important to prepare for.

One of the most di cult things about osteoarthritis is the fact that people tend to lose the ability to perform some of their daily

e spine is basically composed of a long sta of interlinking joints. Once you start to lose the cartilage that connects your joints

One of the more interesting symptoms that people experiencing osteoarthritis might experience is a sensation of warmth or heat in the joints. is is because the joints themselves will begin to generate heat as the cartilage becomes damaged and the muscles grow weaker.

is is particularly apparent in the elbows, knees, and ngers. ey might sometimes seem warmer than the rest of your body. If it becomes excessively uncomfortable, you could cool them down with an ice pack or take a cool shower. is will also help to manage swelling.

A consistent downward slide A timeline of Pakistan’s Army Chiefs through the ages

ere was a time in the 1950s when Pakistan’s exports were more than South Korea’s and a time in the 1990s when our exports were more than Vietnam’s. Today, South Korea’s and Vietnam’s exports are 18 times and six times more than Pakistan’s respectively. So the story of our relative decline is both old and consistent. However, it has taken on a sharper edge in this century.

ASK anyone familiar with economic matters what is the basic problem with Pakistan’s economy and they will say it’s the current account de cit. And that would be the correct answer. e boomand-bust cycle of our economy is precisely because we run into a current account decit every time we try to achieve growth. ( e fact that we remain poor is due to our low productivity, but that’s a separate discussion.) Current account de cit is the di erence between foreign exchange going out (imports) and foreign exchange coming in (exports plus remittances). In Pakistan’s case we have always had current account de cits (except for three out of 75 years), meaning that we have always had less to sell to foreigners than our propensity to consume their products. Of course, such an arrangement is not sustainable forever, and we have reached a stage where it is not.

e default risk won’t vanish even a er the December bonds are paid o .

When Gen Pervez Musharraf imposed martial law in 1999, our exports were 16 per cent of GDP. When General Sahib at long last le , our exports had decreased to 12pc of GDP. In 2007-08 the government kept the rupee propped up to an unsustainable value of about Rs60 to a dollar, sold petrol at a loss, and ran the highest current account de cit in our history. (We aren’t particularly innovative in our policy errors; as you will see below — even our mistakes are recycled.) When the new PPP government came, it had to devalue the rupee and run to the IMF. Although there wasn’t much that was stellar about its governance except for the Benazir Income Support Programme, the PPP should get the credit that it increased exports to 13.5pc of GDP... Human Rights Abuses: A Stain On The Legacy of the FIFA World Cup

Cont.from Pg 9 isolated in a in a new, exploitive environment. “5,000 dead for 5,760 minutes of football. Shame on you!” read a message repeated across Germany, a reference to varying estimates of laborer fatalities during the course of Qatar’s construction projects. .. Unfortunately, both FIFA and Qatar became complacent to the widespread abuse countless workers su ered. is included illegal recruitment fees where migrants had to pay $500-4,000 US dollars to obtain their jobs, appalling living conditions that are housing 8 or more people in cramped, dirty, and unsafe accommodations, and false or delayed salaries in which workers were promised more than they received or weren’t paid for several months which can have detrimental e ects on their families’ livelihoods. Many can’t even leave the country or change their jobs due to an “exit permit” policy implemented by their companies. Migrants from Bangladesh, India, and Nepal, all working on the refurbishment of the Khalifa Stadium and landscaping the surrounding gardens and sporting facilities known as the “Aspire Zone”, are being exploited. While these in-

nocent people su er, the governing bodies of the World Cup, its sponsors, and the construction companies involved are set to make massive nancial gains from the tournament. Even now, the executive who presided over Qatar winning the bid now says it was a “mistake”. Regardless of his reasons for saying so, activists and organizations all around the world clearly agree.

In fact, protests across the world have broken out in complaint of the blatant human rights violations taking place in Qatar right now. e acknowledgment of these issues is crucial because if we, the people, don’t speak out against crises such as these, who will? Media outlets and nonpro t organizations implore the general public to look into what cost the World Cup is coming at this year and to rethink their support of it. Sport is an avenue of expression and an opportunity for unity across the board, but the events that have occurred in the 4 years leading up to this year’s tournament re ect a broken mirror image of that. What values and morals are we choosing to uphold and what does it speak of our characters to watch silently and comfortably in our beds as lives have and continue to fall apart?
