Hands off Afghanistan, nations agree in security pact More than a dozen countries in the volatile region around Afghanistan have reached a security agreement that emphasizes non-interference in the troubled country’s affairs, in a diplomatic push to prevent proxy wars and state partition as NATO troops withdraw. The Istanbul Protocol commits signatories to protect Afghanistan’s “sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity,” and promises co-operation on the dismantling of “terrorist sanctuaries and safe havens.” Such promises are less notable than the list of countries that pledged agreement, which reads like a who’s who of regional rivals for influence in Afghanistan. Delegations that adopted the protocol included Pakistan, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Turkmenistan and the United Arab Emirates. Copies of the agreement given journalists did not include a signature from Uzbekistan, initially touted as a member of the regional group, but no Uzbek officials were available to comment. Still, the deal reached at an ornate hall on the waterfront in Istanbul

Israel is forcing Palestinians out of East Jerusalem as part of a deliberate policy that might constitute a war crime, a prominent Israeli non-governmental organisation said, a charge rejected by Jerusalem’s mayor. The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) has presented the United Nations with its findings on Monday and demanded an inquiry, saying Israel targeted Palestinians by demolishing homes, revoking residency and eroding quality of life. “We are witnessing a process of ethnic displacement,” said Michael Sfard, a lawyer who helped draw up a 73-page report into the issue. “Israel is manifestly and seriously violating international law ... and the motivation is demographic.” Stephan Miller, a spokesman for Israel’s mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, dismissed the report. He said in a statement it was based on “misleading facts, blatant lies and political spin about Jerusalem, so I’m sure the UN will enjoy it”. Israel seized East Jerusalem, including the Old City, in the 1967 Middle East war. It later annexed the area and surrounding West Bank villages into a Jerusalem municipality that it declared the united and eternal capital of Israel. World powers have not recognised Israel’s annexations - which, according to

on Wednesday was touted by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns as the “first, clear, region-wide” statement of support from Afghanistan’s neighbourhood. The focus of the agreement was clearly to prevent outsiders from meddling in Afghanistan during the sensitive transition period that started in recent months as the United States began withdrawing soldiers from the country. Those withdrawals are scheduled to accelerate, removing perhaps a quarter of the 130,000 international troops by the end of next year. Some delegations to the Istanbul summit expressed worry that the withdrawals could result in civil war, or even the breakup of Afghanistan, and the meeting’s final agreement reflected those concerns: The document makes several mentions of “indivisible security,” “territorial integrity,” and similar phrases. Most importantly, signatories pledged “non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states.” Such

Musharraf to return to Pakistan on March 23 at any cost: APML

Former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf will return Pakistan on March 23, 2012 at any cost, said All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) central vice presidents Dr Ghulam Mujtaba and Haris Nawaz, reported by Daily Times Addressing a joint press conference at a local hotel on Tuesday, the APML leaders said it was very clear stance of the party that no one should have ambiguity in return of Musharraf as there would be no delay in it. Dr Mujtaba said: “The basic and real problem facing the country is its slowing economy, however, Musharraf is only political figure who could safeguard it. He said Pakistan would need no foreign aid if looted money of the country was recovered. He said: “Musharraf is the only person whom the world rely. The donor agencies, which are currently reluctant to give funds to the present rulers, will give funds to the country over their trust on him.” He claimed there was no charge of corruption against Musharraf. The APML VC termed the Musharraf tenure as golden era in terms of economy.

Dr Mujtaba said Pakistan was passing through a critical juncture as lawlessness had badly hit its society. He said: “The wars of present era are fought on economic issues, while the economic situation of the country is deteriorating with each passing day.” “Dr Mujtaba said when Musharraf left the country, the value of the dollar was Rs 58 but now it had hit Rs 88. The prices of essential commodities have also multiplied manifold,” he observed. He maintained that the publishing of more and more new notes was leading the country to the verge of danger. He cited the example of Soviet Union as saying it was dismantled due to its economic crisis despite equipped with nukes and arms. “We want to boost foreign investment in the country and will provide security and safety to them”, he asserted. The blood being wasted in Afghanistan would not be let exhausted if APML comes to power while anything against interest of the country will be thwarted, he assured. According to a report of Transparency International, he said, Pakistan has gone down like Somalia. Haris Nawaz said the issues and problems could not be solved through processions and rallies unless there was solution behind them. He said, “If we compare Mushrraf era with present government, we will find the period of Musharraf better in term of economic and law maintaining. He said with this press conference, APML was launching campaign and in this regard the party would hold a big political rally on Nov 16 in Hyderabad, which would be addressed by Musharraf by phone.

Pakistan raises India trade links

Endorsing to grant the Most Favoured Nation (MNF) status to India the federal cabinet on Wednesday assured that matter would be put to the Parliament for formal approval. “The federal cabinet unanimously endorsed to grant the MFN status to India. Pakistan fully stands by its principled stance on Kashmir issue. Despite granting MFN status to India, Pakistan will never budge on its stance on Kashmir issue and will continue political, moral and diplomatic support to their Kashmiri brethren,” said Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan while addressing a press conference after the federal cabinet. The federal cabinet also decided Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan package would be fully implemented by the end of this year. She said the cabinet met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and paid rich tribute to Begum Nusrat Bhutto for her contributions for democracy and fateha was also offered during the meeting. Responding a to question about giving MFN status to India, the minister said that although a lot of concerns were expressed on giving MFN status to India by the cabinet members, yet all the concerns were cleared. “Commerce minister and secretary have given detailed briefing to the cabinet covering all the aspects for giving MFN status to India,” she added. The minister said that a detailed discussion was carried out on granting MFN status to India as almost all the aspects were touched. “No question arises of making any compromise on Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir,” she assured media, after receiving volley of questions. Responding to a question, Firdous Ashiq Awan said that they had decided to follow the vision of the Quaid-e-Azam so the federal cabinet unanimously endorsed the MFN status to India. After the partition and despite war between India and Pakistan on Kashmir in 1948, Pakistan and India had signed General Agreement on Tariffs import and Trade (GATT) under

that all member-states had MFN status, she added. The minister further said that granting MFN status to India was started in 1947 and 1948 as Father of Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Quaid-e-Millat Nawabzada Liaqat Ali Khan had initiated this vision. To a question, the minister said all the stakeholders were taken on board before reaching this accord. She further said that Kashmir cause, strategic interests, balance of power and import bill would not affect in trade with India. “Commerce Minister during his visit to India had consulted Kashmiri leaders on MFN status to India,” she said. Specialize in Hajj and Umrah The minister told the cabinet that Kashmiris on both sides * Best Prices on Airfare of border were doing their bilateral trade and bus service. It Around the World would not damage Kashmir cause,” she said while quoting the commerce minister. The minister said, “We have been assured * Vacation, Cruise and Tour Packages that trade with India would not affect our balance of power, * Visa Services for Any Country strategic interests, Kashmir cause or our import bill. Pakistan has already assigned MFN status to over 100 countries,” she We Offer the World to You! added. The minister was of the view that the bilateral trade 9538 -120 Street, Surrey ( Scott Town Plaza) would be beneficial for our country. India had already given 604-583-3833 or 778-708-5255 MFN status to Pakistan in 1995. “Different Indian goods are being smuggled to our country via Dubai so it is better to do legal trade which would be beneficial for country and people as well,” she maintained. To another question, the minister said that both countries were involved in talks for approval to trade for non-tariff items. Sharing the history of Pak-India trade ties, Secretary COMMERCE Zafar Mehmood said that these ties were blocked soon after 1965 war but India had given MFN status to Pakistan in 1995. “Only Wagha border LLB (London) would be opened for trade through rail and road links,” he said. As per the Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA), Afghanistan was allowed to send its goods to India through Wagha, he added. Source: The Nation

Vancouver will ‘watch and wait’ Occupy protest

Vancouver’s police chief says he isn’t interested in dispersing Occupy Vancouver protesters by force because the tactic simply hasn’t worked in U.S. cities. Chief Jim Chu appeared in front of city council Tuesday and was asked by the mayor his opinion of the city’s “wait-and-watch” approach to resolving the demonstration, part of a global movement. “In other jurisdictions where they tried to end it with police interventions, it hasn’t ended it,” Chu told the public meeting, as councillors

asked questions of senior city staff and mulled over how best to bring about a peaceful resolution. Chu noted that when officers descended on the demonstration in Oakland, Calif., protesters reconverged in equal numbers. Riot-clad police raided the camp last week and used tear gas to drive out crowds, yet the camp returned the next day. The city report noted using the hardline police approach has also not worked in Chicago or Melbourne. Mass arrests have been made in Denver, Portland and Perth. Officials in London abandoned attempts at seeking a court injunction. Chu said he’s been closely following developments in Canadian and U.S. cities. He said if council decides police should move in, he would rather council get a court order

first before asking police to act. City staff provided council with an update Tuesday on the village that’s sprung up in the downtown core on the front lawn of the iconic Vancouver Art Gallery. Tuesday’s council meeting was the final one before the upcoming municipal election, and one councillor who’s vying for the mayor’s job tried to ask the city to shut the activism down. But city manager Penny Ballem told council neither police, firefighters nor health officials have raised imminent concerns for the upwards of 150 daytime participants or 60 people who remain in tents each night. She noted that going to the courts to get an injunction would require showing there are significant risks to the public and that process could still take days or weeks. Should that change, however, Chu explained how the situation might be resolved. He said if protesters refused to leave despite being legally compelled by an injunction, the city would then be required to obtain an enforcement order. At that point police would do their job, he said. Occupy protests against what

demonstrators say is corporate greed are occurring in 1,700 cities around the world, noted Ballem in her update. Ballem and Mayor Gregor Robertson said they have hopes of negotiating a peaceful resolution. Ballem acknowledged it was likely owing to the Stanley Cup riot that more police and other first responders were out during the first weekend of protest, ballooning costs. Marches and the occupation in Vancouver began on Oct. 15, in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protest that started it all. Ballem said while the protest has cost the city half a million dollars so far, the relatively calm and co-operative nature of the group still on the land has allowed the city to reduce costs. The protest has been going on amidst a civic election campaign. Robertson’s main rival in the Nov. 19 vote demanded he outline for council his plans on how to bring the situation to resolution. Robertson accused her of grandstanding. In fact, Anton’s attempt to have the Occupy Vancouver camp shutdown failed when nobody on council seconded her motion. Source: CTV News

Greek cabinet backs Papandreou’s referendum plan Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou secured the unanimous backing of his cabinet for a referendum on the eurozone debt rescue plan, government spokesman Elias Mossialos said early Wednesday. The cabinet also approved Papandreou’s decision to hold a parliamentary vote of confidence on his government, Mossialos told reporters. Several socialist deputies had already denounced the referendum plan Tuesday, with one member quitting the parliamentary group to fight it. That defection left the socialists with just 152 deputies in the 300-seat parliament, suggesting that the outcome of Friday’s confidence vote was far from a foregone conclusion. At the emergency cabinet meeting called late Tuesday, Papandreou had insisted on the need for a referendum. Explaining his opposition to calls for an early election, he argued that “everything would stop” in an election campaign and the country would “be dragged to a risk of bankruptcy”. Papandreou added that his EU peers “had been advised” of his plans “and will respect and support” the country’s efforts. Earlier Tuesday, Defence Minister Panos Beglitis backed the referendum. During trading Tuesday, Greek stocks plunged 6.92 percent in response to Papandreou’s surprise referendum announcement late the previous day. Adding to the chaos, Greece’s foreign minister cancelled meetings with three foreign ambassadors, while Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos was hospitalised with an inflamed appendix. The semi-state Athens News Agency said Venizelos had made a flurry of phone calls to senior players at the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund as well as to his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble. On Wednesday Papandreou is due in the French resort town of Cannes to face G20 leaders at their summit Thursday and Friday. He will attend a working dinner with host Nicolas Sarkozy of France and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Also present will be EU president Herman Van Rompuy, EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso, eurozone chief JeanClaude Juncker, new ECB chief Mario Draghi and IMF managing director Christine Lagarde, Papandreou’s office said. In a phone call with Merkel Tuesday, Papandreou insisted the referendum would strengthen Greece in the eurozone and globally, his office said. Vasso Papandreou, head of the parliamentary economic affairs committee, then called for early elections and a temporary unity government to “safeguard” last week’s eurozone deal to slash Greece’s huge debt. “The country is threatened by imminent bankruptcy,” said Vasso Papandreou -- no relation to the prime minister. Another socialist deputy, Eva Kaili, threatened to defect if the government persisted with the referendum plan, and a statement from six socialist party members also called on the premier to resign. Many analysts have warned that early elections would fail to produce a strong majority in parliament and would plunge the country into political uncertainty. Papandreou’s term ends in 2013. But with leaders of the world’s 20 biggest economies getting ready for the Cannes summit which is focused on the economic crisis, Papandreou’s unexpected move has triggered fears the rescue efforts could rapidly unravel. He has faced increasing dissent within his own party over the tough austerity policies required by the EU and the IMF, which have sparked general strikes and sometimes violent street protests. Although the EU deal agreed last Thursday included an agreement to write off 100 billion euros ($137 billion) of debt owed by Greece, Athens still has to implement a painful package of austerity measures in return. Seven Billion and Counting The world’s population reached seven billion on Monday, according to a report from the United Nations. The number is growing by 200,000 people a day, and experts predict that by the end of this century it could reach 10 billion.

Rogue US army unit leader saw Afghans as ‘savages’ The ringleader of a rogue US army unit accused of killing Afghan civilians for sport treated the locals like “savages,” a court martial heard. The so-called “kill team” led by Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs was “out of control,” prosecutors added as grisly photos of soldiers posing with a corpse were shown in court. Gibbs, who sat expressionless in a tiny courtroom where the week-long case is being heard, also allegedly brandished fingers cut off dead bodies in a failed attempt to silence members of his team. The 26-year-old faces life in prison if convicted on charges including three counts of premeditated murder, in a scandal that has threatened Abu Ghraib-style embarrassment for the US military. Gibbs, the fourth member of the rogue unit to face court martial, is accused of staging killings between January and May 2010 to make them look like legitimate combat casualties. Jeremy Morlock, described as Gibbs’ “right hand man,” said his former boss had frequent conversations about “drop weapons,” or weapons found on the battlefield which could be planted on a body. Morlock told how Gibbs took over the platoon, stationed in volatile Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, in November 2009, after its previous leader suffered serious injuries in a roadside bomb attack. Morlock said he and another soldier, Private Andrew Holmes, came across a teenage farmer alone in a field. They waved him over, and when he approached Morlock threw a grenade, and Holmes opened fire to make it look like a real firefight. The second alleged killing occurred on February 22 in the

village of Kari Kheyl, when the platoon came across an unarmed local. Gibbs “asked if we were willing to kill this guy, smoke him,” Morlock said. With a contraband AK47, Gibbs “fires into a wall, then turns around and drops it, and then engages the individual with his M4 (rifle),” Morlock told the court martial. The third alleged murder took place on May 2 in the village of Quala Day. Holding a grenade, Gibbs singled out an elderly man named Mullah Allah Dad and led him away from the Gibbs’ court martial opened last Friday with jury selection, after which Gibbs’ lawyers entered not guilty pleas to all 16 charges at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle, home to the 5th Stryker Brigade. Three of the other “kill-team” members have agreed to testify against Gibbs: Morlock, Specialist Adam Winfield -- as part of plea deals with prosecutors -- and Specialist Michael Wagnon. In March, Morlock, 23, was jailed for 24 years and dishonorably discharged. In August, Winfield, 23, was sentenced to three years in prison, and in September, Holmes, 21, was jailed for seven years. The alleged killings only came to light after another soldier, Private Justin Stoner, was warned by Gibbs brandishing fingers allegedly sliced off the hands of dead Afghans not to talk about hashish smoking in the platoon. “He said if he didn’t keep his mouth shut he’d end up like one of these guys,” Morlock said. Stoner soon went to investigators and began talking about the drugs, his own beating, and the killing of civilians. On May 12, Gibbs was arrested. Source: AFP

Slave Lake wildfire becomes arson investigation

The Alberta government now believes a fire that caused about $700 million in damages after sweeping into Slave Lake on May 15 was deliberately set, and has turned over its files and reports to the RCMP. “Our investigation into

the origin of that fire ruled out everything but arson as a probable cause,” Sustainable Resource Development Minister Frank Oberle said Tuesday. “As a result, we have delivered our findings to the RCMP to determine if a criminal investigation is the next step.” The investigation into the cause of the Slave Lake wildfire took five months, involving extensive onsite and offsite work to gather evidence, said Oberle. “Our investigation took the time required to protect, collect, analyze and document evidence to the rigorous standards required for presentation in a court of law,” he said. The province knows precisely where the fire was set, but cannot disclose the location as it’s now considered a crime scene, said Oberle. The fire that burned into

the town of Slave Lake and nearby Poplar Estates was one of 45 to strike the Lesser Slave Lake Area between May 13 and 16. The 4,700-hectare fire began southeast of Slave Lake on May 14, led to the evacuation of 7,000 residents and eventually destroyed about 400 structures, mostly homes. “It’s a sick feeling. It makes you angry, more angry than before, because how can somebody do something like this?” said Myrtis Mitchell, who lost her house in the fire. She also lost her home in Newfoundland to fire last month. The entire community is surprised and saddened to learn the fire is now considered arson, said Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee. “It’s disappointing,” she said. “It’s definitely something we thought of, but it’s definitely very concerning to hear that this is a possibility now.” Slave Lake RCMP members were also shocked by the news. As 11 officers lost their home to the fire, the local detachment will not be involved in the investigation in the interest of accountabilty, said Staff St. Roberta McKale. The wildfire is the second-most-costly insured-damage disaster in Canadian history, behind the 1998 Quebec ice storm. In August, the province announced an independent review of how well it fought the Slave Lake fire and the effectiveness of its fire management programs. “We want to know how the combination of the burning conditions, the crew response... and what we can do to improve,” said Oberle. “Were there any shortcomings in our actions?” The minister expects a report early in 2012 with enough time to implement recommendations before next fire season. G20 leaders arrive to a renewed economic crisis

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other G20 leaders arriving here for an annual summit Wednesday may once again face the threat of a global economic meltdown after Greece shocked the world by announcing a referendum on Europe’s bailout agreement. The surprise decision by Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou calls into question the eurozone’s hard-won deal last week meant to protect national treasuries and banks across the continent from defaulting and menacing the economies of Europe and the wider world. The two-day summit that begins officially on Thursday had been seen as a chance for the G20 to work with France, Germany and other European countries to consolidate and strengthen Europe’s prospects after last week’s crucial agreement. But now, with Papandreou’s government in disarray and no guarantee he would win a referendum on the European bailout plan, Harper and other leaders are confronting an explosive situation that will put their political skills to a grueling test. Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who spearheaded last week’s eurozone agreement, were forced once again into a round of high-stakes diplomacy. They will engage in emergency talks on Greece with the EU and the International Monetary Fund on Wednesday even as G20 leaders fly into the south of France from around the world for the summit. A separate discussion with the Greek government is also planned in hopes of managing a last-minute easing of Europe’s crisis before the G20 officially meets on Thursday. Referring to the eurozone deal worked out at the Brussels summit last week, a statement from Merkel’s office said, “Germany and France jointly with their European partners are determined to guarantee the full and swift implementation of the summit’s decisions, which are more necessary

today than ever.” The renewed crisis will add a note of extreme urgency to the G20 gathering. U.S. President Barack Obama has been keeping in close touch with Merkel and Sarkozy in recent weeks as the Europeans tried to deal with the threat of a financial meltdown, a development that could be disastrous for the struggling American economy. And Harper has repeatedly appealed, for the sake of the world economy, for European governments to work harder to get their financial houses in order. The new turmoil over Europe’s economies will also complicate efforts by European leaders to enlist the support of emerging economic giants such as China to supply some of the funds needed to pay for the bailout plan agreed to last week. Chinese officials have already signaled only lukewarm interest and the uncertainties raised by Greece are not likely to be reassuring. It may as well accentuate the transition at the G20 in which China, Brazil and other fast-growing economies are assuming increasing credibility and power within the global decision-making forum as the economies of traditional powerbrokers such as the United States and Europe flounder. “We are living in times of great geo-political and geo-economic change,” former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark told the BBC. “We’re in a transition to a world where the growth in the developing world is going to matter more and more for other countries in the developing world.” But for now, she said, the advanced economies are still tremendously important to the prosperity of the whole world “and that’s why it really is to be hoped that the eurozone and Greece will find a way through this crisis that doesn’t destabilize things for too much longer.” Source: Toronto Star

for sovereignty in the region, then it should reconsider its policy of violating Pakistani airspace with armed drones. “Nobody wants drone attacks in Pakistan,” Mr. Malik said. “So if these 14 countries agree to respect sovereignty, the 15th should be the United States.” The regional foreign ministers agreed to meet again in June of 2012 in Kabul, to review compliance with the protocol. Such diplomatic efforts have had little effect in the past: The United Nations started talks about non-interference across the AfghanistanPakistan border in 1982; an agreement was finally reached at Geneva in 1988, on the eve of Soviet troop withdrawals, but the deal was largely ignored as regional powers lined up to support opposing factions in the civil war. The possibility of that bitter history repeating itself was not lost on the delegates in Istanbul. Iran’s Foreign Minister even suggested that the recent assassination of Afghan Peace Council chief Burhanuddin Rabbani represented part of a “conspiracy” to destabilize Afghanistan. “Iran warns against every step that could bring Afghanistan to the edge of collapse or partition,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, according to a transcript of his speech

a non-intervention pact had been championed earlier this year by Karl Inderfurth, former U.S. assistant secretary of state for South Asia, in a briefing paper that envisioned Pakistan and India promising “not to seek a military presence in Afghanistan or to use Afghan soil to undermine the other.” Neither country made such a specific promise at the Istanbul conference, but they did speak in general terms about allowing Afghanistan to chart its own path. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, mentioned her country’s respect for Afghan sovereignty during her opening remarks to the conference on Tuesday morning, and that comment was quickly singled out for praise by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who appeared at the conference on behalf of the European Union foreign policy team. Some members of the Pakistani delegation appeared to resent the emphasis on sovereignty, seeing it as another way of repeating the widespread accusation that Islamabad supports Taliban insurgents. In an interview on Monday evening, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that if the United States feels so strongly about ensuring respect

Syria says deal reached with Arab League Syria has said it reached a deal with an Arab League committee entrusted with finding a way to end seven months of unrest and starting a dialogue between President Bashar al-Assad and his opponents. State media reported the deal without giving details, saying an official announcement of the agreement would be made at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on Wednesday. But a senior Arab League official said the organisation was still awaiting a response from Damascus to proposals for halting the bloodshed, which activists said continued on Tuesday with two civilians shot dead by Assad’s forces in Homs and two soldiers killed by army deserters in an ambush. One activist said gunmen dragged nine people, all of them from Assad’s minority Alawite sect, from a bus on a road between the cities of Homs and Hama, and killed them. The UN says more than 3,000 people have been killed in Assad’s crackdown on an uprising which erupted in March against his rule, inspired by revolutions which have toppled three Arab leaders this year. The government blames fighters who it says are armed and financed from abroad for the violence and says they have killed 1,100 members of the security forces. Arab League ministers met Syrian officials in Qatar on Sunday to seek a way to end the bloodshed. Arab diplomats said the ministers proposed that Syria release immediately prisoners held since February, withdraw security forces from the streets, permit deployment of Arab League monitors and start a dialogue with the opposition. In another development on Tuesday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister, condemned Syria’s crackdown on its opponents, saying Turkey would take steps against the Assad government. “Killing one person is like killing the whole of humanity, but unfortunately there is an authority which is killing hundreds of people, whom I believe are martyrs,” he said. “This is an authority based on power, not on the will of the people.” Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, whose country heads the ministerial committee, also said Assad must launch serious reforms if Syria were to avoid further violence. A Lebanese official with close ties to the Syrian government said Syria had put forward its own proposals to the Arab League. “The Syrian authorities want the opposition to drop weapons, the Arab states to end their funding for the weapons and the opposition, and an end to the media campaign against Syria,” the official told Reuters news agency. It was not clear how much those demands were reflected in the final agreement announced by Syria’s state media. The US said it welcomed efforts to put a stop to violence in Syria but it still believed Assad should step down. Many in Syria’s opposition have ruled out any dialogue with Assad while the violence continues. Omar Idlibi, a member of the grassroots Local Co-ordination Committee and member of the Syrian National Council, said the opposition wanted to see details of the agreement. “We fear that this agreement is another attempt to give the regime a new chance to crush this revolution and kill more Syrians,” he said. “It helps the Syrian regime to remain in power while the demands of the people are clear in terms of toppling the regime and its unsuitability even to lead a transitional period.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Palestinan : Continued from pg 1 international law, are illegal. Moreover, Palestinians want E Jerusalem for the capital of their future state. There are some 300,000 Palestinians residents in East Jerusalem, representing about 35 per cent of the city’s total population, but ICAHD said that since Israel took control of largely Arab areas it had systematically prevented their development. One third of land in East Jerusalem was taken for the construction of Jewish neighbourhoods, while only nine per cent of the remaining land is legally available for housing. This has all been built on, making expansion impossible. ICAHD said it was virtually impossible for Palestinians to obtain building permits to house their growing families.”They have no other option than to leave East Jerusalem, build illegally or live in appalling, cramped conditions,” said Emily Schaeffer, who authored the report. Those who leave lose residency rights if they are gone for seven or more years and cannot return. Some 14,000 Palestinians lost their residency between 1967 and 2010, with half of those revocations taking place after 2006, ICAHD said. Residency entitles you to Israeli health care and national insurance benefits. Those who built houses illegally, lived in fear of having their property demolished and also faced hefty fines. Israel demolished more than 2,000 homes in East Jerusalem since 1967, with 771 being pulled down between 2000-2011. A further 1,500 demolition orders are pending execution. “Palestinians will de facto be deported from East Jerusalem, not by using guns or trucks, but by not allowing them to live a decent, normal life,” Sfard said. Because the annexation of East Jerusalem was not recognised, Palestinians living there should be considered as a people under occupation, ICAHD said. As such, Israel had no right to strip them of residency or demolish their homes. “There is a suspicion that a war crime is taking place and that is why an investigation should take place,” said Sfard. TRUE IMPLICATION OF ‘HAJJ’ IN ISLAM

‘Eid-ul-Fitr’ and ‘Eid-ul-Adha’ (called the ‘Eid-ul-Zuha’ also) are the two most significant festivals of the Muslim community across the globe. Both Eids are celebrated throughout the world with the extreme religious reverence by the followers of Islam. Whereas the ‘Eid-ul-Fitr’ is fêted to commemorate the completion of the fasting of the month of Ramzan the ‘Eid-ul-Adha,’ on the other hand, is associated with the Hajj (religious pilgrimage to Mecca) and sacrificing an animal in the name of Allah (SWT). As per the time-honored tenet of Islam, every Muslim is expected to embark on one pilgrimage at the minimum, in their lifetime if they can afford it. The Hajj is commanded in the Sanctified Quran in the following words: “And pilgrimage to the House is a duty unto God for mankind, for him who can find the way thither” (3:97) - and its rites were established by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), but the Muslim tradition dates it back to Adam and Abraham, who were instructed by the angels in the performance of the rites. As with the fasting, exceptions have been specifically ordained for those individuals, who are physically or financially unable to fulfill the obligation, and one is actually commanded not to proceed to the Hajj if to do so would bring about any hardship for his or her family. However, those unable to go by themselves may fulfill their obligation by sending someone in their stead. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) himself performed Hajj only once in his life, as one of his last

public acts of worship, and that too, shortly before His death. At this occasion, he delivered an eloquent sermon (published in this issue), which encapsulated principles of ethics and morality and the message of Islam. Every year, Hajj unifies the Islamic fraternity by bringing together the believers of Allah (SWT), from all over the world to worship Him together at one geographical location, according to the rules prescribe by Him. Most of the communities across the world are facing disintegration into sects and sub sects, as a consequence of a number of variations amongst the thinking and viewpoints of their spiritual headmen, may those be of the diminutive nature only. The mammoth gathering of millions on Muslims at one common place of religious worship is, indeed, a very confirmatory and the commendable stride to gear up integration and solidarity in the different shades of the Muslim Ummah. When Muslims from different countries get together and interact with one another as the members of the same fold, the feelings and mindset of oneness stands cultivated and spontaneously a sentimental relationship gets developed amongst them, which is the prerequisite for the unity, affinity and harmony of any community. Hajj witnesses the world’s greatest example of eliminating social discrimination and any other human differences. Ultimately, Hajj purifies body, mind & soul of the pilgrims which are the prerequisites of the spiritual elevation of the human beings.. Upon arrival at the boundary of Mak-

By: Trustee Ijaz Chatha Surrey Board of Education “Six schools are needed immediately and eight more, a total of 14 schools, are needed to keep up with Surrey’s growth in the next few years”. Premier Clark announced yesterday capital funding which is approximately only 1/3 of the way to resolving the issue of overcrowding in Surrey Schools. “Surrey has been starved for new schools for years, so any announcement of new school construction is most welcome. But the reality is, this is less than the Board had hoped for. Surrey has gone from being six years behind to being four years behind,” as the lone SCC School Trustee. “Surrey will continue to grow through this decade and beyond, so we have to plan right now for the years ahead. Our growth is expected to maintain this pace until 2022. We really need much more than what was announced yesterday” said Chatha. “Surrey has relied on too many portables for too long leading to students spending more time in portables than they are in the school itself. Hajj also teaches Discipline and forbearance to all. While it is performing Tawaf of Ka’ba or running seven times between the small mountains of Safa and Marwa, the observance of the rites of Hajj in the faithful manner, keeps the pilgrims very close to the purity of mind, which is the solitary mode to acquire the vicinity of God. The throwing of pebbles at “Jamarat”, representing the devil, is described by Imam Ghazali as “an expression of the pilgrim’s intention to obey Allah’s commandment, and a demonstration of his humility and servitude to Him.” Besides, it teaches two important aspects of human life stated above, which are primarily the key ingredients of the cultural advancement of the human beings. May Allah (SWT) accept the Hajj of all pilgrims this year and return them safely to their homes, spiritually purified and elevated (Ameen). At the same time, all of us who did not go for Hajj this year, should still embrace the message it cultivates – unity, self-control and unconditional submission to Allah (SWT). By embracing these Islamic values, we will indeed understand the real significance of Eid-ul-Adha and can celebrate it in its true spirit.

kah, the pilgrims enter the state of Ihram, a the symbol of purity and equalityin which they will remain throughout the period of Hajj. The males entering this pure state do wear the Ihram garments - two white, flawless sheets wrapped around the body. This aspect of the rite not only signifies the state of holiness the pilgrims have entered, but it further denotes the feeling of equality and unity amongst the pilgrims by removing their visual indicators of class, wealth and culture. Physical cleanliness alone is devoid of any sense in the absence of the transparency of one’s mind (thoughts) and religious uplift. It includes the state of one’s altitude from the worldly desires. Hence, this purity is the prime objective of Ihram, which every Muslim must stick to, not during the Hajj alone, but even after his return there from. Allah (SWT) has prescribed various rules pertaining to the control of the five senses during Hajj. Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell and Touch are the five key senses that often control human life and behavior. These senses are of enormous benefit to the human beings if utilized affirmatively and in appropriate manner, but there misuse in any way often leads to the dilapidation of human character, which in return has devastating effects on shaping our personalities in good mental mold. Undertaking of the Hajj and the fulfillment of all the prescribed religious requirements thereat provided us the best possible opportunity to streamline all our five senses in the positive direction.

Schools Fenced Off in Surrey By: Sukhy Dhillon I saw a story in the local English news about Hyland Elementary being fenced off from the public. That made me think about my local neighbourhood which includes the fenced off and locked school fields at Tamanawis Secondary and Beaver Creek Elementary. Both schools are in my neighbourhood, which is predominantly South Asian, and I have noticed that they are locked most of the time. In fact, the gate to the soccer field at Tamanawis Secondary locks automatically at 5:30 pm every school day, regardless of whether anyone is using the field or not. If you happen to get stuck on the field you have to climb a 10 or 12 foot fence just to get out! I find it ironic that the School District, on its website, claims to be an active partner and supporter of the City of Surrey’s partnership with the Right to Play, yet it places its soccer fields behind locked fences and gates. At a time when more and more people are concerned about the health of our children and are looking for

ways to get them more active, the School District should be leading the way in helping children get healthy. After all, they are in the education business. By locking the gates to the fields what message is the School District giving our children? I am a school teacher in the community and I find it very concerning that a public school would lock its soccer fields and keep the public out. My understanding is that the School Board wants to keep the fields in good playing condition for licensed community groups. I find it rather startling and disconcerting that the school district would put profits before the public interest. School fields are a community asset and should be enjoyed by the community without having to pay a user fee. After all, it is our taxes that pay for the School Board to operate in the first place. The Surrey School Board needs a lesson in community responsibility. Significance of The Last Sermon of The Holy Prophet (PBUH)

The farewell Pilgrimage of the Holy Prophet (SAW) may rightly be called the culminating point in his Prophetic career. It was the sixty-third year of the Prophet’s life which coincided with the close of the 10th of Hijra that he decided to perform Hajj, which in history, goes by the name of Hajja-tul-Wada. The Prophet’s mission, had, by this time, been completed to all intents and purposes. To a people steeped in ignorance, he gave light and inspired them with belief in Allah, the sole Creator, Master and Sustainer of the Universe. To a disunited mass, engaged in perpetual warfare, he gave unity of thought and action. He had revealed the love of God and His will to mankind and had given it a visible expression by founding a society on the basis of righteousness, piety and Godconsciousness, the like of which is not to be found in the whole history of mankind. In short, Syedna Muhammad (SAW) had delivered to human race the final Truth with all its necessary implications. The completion of His prophetic mission implied His departure from this earthly home to the heavenly abode. The Holy Prophet (SAW) had clearly visualised it. He, therefore, decided to give the finishing touch to his massive work and imprint its salient points on the minds of his devoted followers so that they might always keep before them the system of life-values enunciated by Islam. It was with this object in view that messages were sent to all parts of Arabia inviting people to join him in this great Pilgrimage. Five days before Dhu-al-hijjah, the Holy Prophet (SAW) put on Ahram, the pilgrim’s garb, and set out to Makkah with more than 114,000 Muslims. All his wives accompanied him. As he rode, he recited “Labbaik! Allahumma Labbaik! Labbaika Laa shareeka Lak, Inna lHamda wan na’imata lakaa wal mulk, laa shareeka lak” signifying, “Here I am at Thy service, here I am, O’ Lord, here I am to declare that there is no partner with Thee. All praise and blessings belong to Thee

and all sovereignity is Thine. I am here at Thy service, and Thou hast no partner, O’ Allah.” As the Holy Prophet recited the above call, all his Companions repeated the same loudly. The Holy Prophet (SAW) reached Makkah on the 5th of Dhu-al-Hijjah. He made seven circuits (tawaf) of the Ka’bah, offered two rak’ats of prayer at ‘Maqam-e-Ibrahim’ and climbing the Mount of Safa declared, “There is no god but Allah, He has no partner, all sovereignty and praise belong to Him. He gives life and brings death. He is All-Powerful and Supreme over everything.” On the 8th of Dhu-al-Hijjah, the Prophet (SAW) left with his Companions for Mina and spent the night there, and on the 9th, after the Fajr, morning prayer, He proceeded to Plains of Arafat where he delivered the famous sermon which we have the honour to present below. The sermon of the Holy Prophet (SAW) is not only remarkable for its eloquence, but it contains a sublime message for the whole of the human race. It was a declaration of Human Rights and moral values, a charter of Women Rights. The world has not been able to lay down better principles of ethics and morality than those enunciated in it. Every word of it breathes a spirit of magnanimity and aims at establishing righteousness and fair dealing among men on a workable basis. It establishes brotherhood among Muslims irrespective of the divergence of their geographical, racial and colour backgrounds and provides an outline of a social order, perfectly free from oppression and injustice. It was the declaration of Finality of Syedna Muhammad’s Prophethood, the religion was being perfected by this Final Message from The Creator to his creatures for all times to come.

THE LAST SERMON “All praise is due to Allah, so we praise Him, and seek His pardon and we turn to Him. We seek refuge with Allah from the

evils of ourselves and from the evil consequences of our deeds. Whom Allah guides aright there is none to lead him astray; and there is none to guide him aright whom Allah leads astray. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, the One, having no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and to Him is due all praise. He grants life and causes death and is Powerful over everything. There is no God but Allah, the One; He fulfilled His promise and granted victory to His bondsman, and He alone routed the confederates (of the enemies of Islam). O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today. O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. ALLAH has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has Judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn ‘Abd’al Muttalib (Prophet’s uncle) shall henceforth be waived... Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things. O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do

Procedure of the Sacrifice

The offering of sacrifice (‘udhiyyah or qurbaani) is of very great virtue. The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘Alayhi wa sallam) is reported to have said that during the days of Dhil Hijjah no other thing is dearer to Allah than the qurbaani (sacrifice) and during these days this good act is better than all others. Every drop of blood that falls is accepted by Allah before it reaches the ground and for every hair of the sacrificial animal, one virtue is recorded for one who offers the sacrifice! Therefore, qurbaani should be done with pleasure and a joyous heart. If anyone has the means, then it is desireable for him to offer sacrifice for the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘Alayhi wa sallam), his wives and other pious Muslims, and also one’s deceased parents and relatives so that their souls may also benefit by this reward. If a person is able but does not offer qurbaani at least for himself, then it will be not only a misfortune but a sin. The method of performing the qurbaani is to lay the animal down on the ground with the head towards the Ka’bah and recite the following du’a: ‘Verily I divert my attention to the Lord Who has created the heavens and the earth: (I do so) as one by nature upright, and I am not of the idolaters. Truly my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah the Lord of the Worlds – He has no partner and thus am I commanded and I am the first of those who surrender to Him. Oh Allah! (This sacrifice is) from You and for You; In the name of Allah. Allah is the Greatest!’ Then, while reciting Bismillahi Allahu akbar, cut the throat of the animal and then recite the following prayer: O Allah! Accept this from me as You accepted it from Your beloved Muhammad and Your befriended Ibrahim, peace and blessings be upon them both. • It is most undesireable to slaughter an animal with a blunt knife because it is extremely painful for the animal. It is also execrable to remove its skin or to break its bones before the animal is cold. • The period of sacrifice is on any of the 3 days of Eid-ul-Adha but the best time of sacrifice is the first day and then the second. • Offering of the sacrifice should be done after the prayer, not before.

• The sacrifice is to be performed by anyone who fulfils the requirements of giving Sadaqatul-Fitr. • The sacrifice of goat, sheep, bull, buffalo or camel – whether male or female – is permissible. • One-third of the sacrificed meat should be given in charity to the poor and the rest is to be consumed by oneself and given as a gift to relatives and friends. However, if less than one-third is given in charity, it will not be a sin.

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 594:

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet was asked, “Which is the best deed?” He said, “To believe in Allah and His Apostle.” He was then asked, “Which is the next (in goodness)?” He said, “To participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.” He was then asked, “Which is the next?” He said, “To perform Hajj-Mabrur. “

treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste. O People, listen to me in earnest, worship ALLAH, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a nonArab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves. Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone. O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QURAN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray. All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O ALLAH, that I have conveyed your message to your people”.

THE POWER OF DUAA

Dua is the most potent weapon of a believer. With it, we can never fail, without it, we can never succeed. Once Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) passed by a group of people who were suffering from some affliction. “Why don’t they make Dua (supplication) to Allah for protection,” he said. With all the suffering and disasters Muslims are facing in various parts of the world, the question can be directed to all of us today. It is not that we have forgotten Dua completely, we refer to it regularly. But our ideas and practice regarding Dua have become distorted. Often it is reduced to the level of a ritual. Generally it is considered when all our efforts have failed—an act of last resort. It is belittled through actions and sometimes even with words. Is it any wonder that today mostly a mention of Dua is meant to indicate the hopelessness of a situation? What a tragedy, for Dua is the most potent weapon of a believer. It can change fate, while no action of ours ever can. It is the essence of Ibaadah or worship. With it, we can never fail, without it, we can never succeed. In the proper scheme of things, Dua should be the first and the last resort of the believer, with all his plans and actions coming in between. Dua is conversation with Allah, our Creator, our Lord and Master, the All Knowing, the

All Powerful. This act in itself is of extraordinary significance. It is the most uplifting, liberating, empowering, and transforming conversation a person can ever have. We turn to Him because we know that He alone can lift our sufferings and solve our problems. We feel relieved after describing our difficulties to our Creator. We feel empowered after having communicated with the All Mighty. In every difficulty, our first action is Dua, as is our last. We ask Allah to show us the way to handle that difficulty; we seek His help in following the path He shows to us, we seek His aid in making our efforts successful. When we fall sick, we know that we cannot find the right doctor without His Will, that the best doctor may not be able to diagnose our condition without His Command. The best treatment plan will not succeed without His permission. We make Dua for all of these. We make Dua before we seek medical help, while we are receiving it and after it has been delivered. The same is true of all other difficulties we may encounter. Dua is the essence of Ibaadah. A person engaged in Dua affirms his belief in Tauheed (monotheism) and shuns belief in all false gods. A person seriously and sincerely engaged in Dua understands exactly the relationship between himself and the Creator and affirms it through his actions. That is the

Zam Zam

What’s cooled, refreshing and will quench your thirst in the hot, Arabian desert? If you answered (fill in the name of the latest fad soft drink), you’re wrong. Zamzam is the name of the well that provides the water to billions of people, have thirstily drunk from throughout history, especially during the Hajj pilgrimage.

It is linked to some of the most important personalities in world history: the Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail (peace be upon them) and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him & his family), as well as Ismail’s mother Hajira (may Allah be pleased with her). The Zamzam well is located in Makkah, which is the heart of the Hajj pilgrimage. Standing only a few meters east of the Kaaba, the well is 35 meters deep and topped by an elegant dome. How the Zamzam came into being? All traditions agree that Allah created the well to provide Hajira, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and her baby Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him) with water in the hot, dry valley they were in. In her desperate search for water, Hajira ran seven times back and forth in the scorching heat between the two hills of Safa and Marwa to provide for her baby who was dying of thirst. Today, this same act is a necessary rite of Hajj all Muslims, mothers and fathers, must complete. Prophet Ibrahim settled his family there as part of God’s mission for him. The first thing Hajira had to do then was to look for water in the area. She was searching for it while watching at her son and would run whenever she could not see Ismail. Allah saw her effort and miraculously blessed the spot with a

water spring. The Zamzam before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) The appearance of the Zamzam began the settlement of the Makkan valley, where the descendants of Prophet Ismail populated the area. But as time passed, Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail’s monotheistic message, which once dominated the region, began taking a backseat to pagan, polytheistic beliefs. Nonetheless, the well of Zamzam retained its importance in later generations. The grandfather of the Prophet, Abdul Muttalib, was honored with the responsibility of taking care of the well and the pilgrims to Makkah. Zamzam water: the power drink One of the miracles of Zamzam water is its ability to satisfy both thirst and hunger. One of the Companions of the Prophet said that before Islam, the water was called “Shabbaa’ah” or satisfying. It was filling and helped them nourish their families. After Islam, this powerful ability to quench thirst and fill stomachs remained. The Prophet said: “The best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zamzam; it is a kind of food and a healing from sickness.” According to the Muslim collection of Hadith, Abu Dharr Ghifari, a Companion, noted that when he first arrived in Makkah during the early days of Islam, he survived only on Zamzam water for a whole month. Not only did he satisfy his hunger and thirst, he became obese. More recently, in the last few decades, scientists have collected samples of Zamzam water and they have found certain peculiarities that make the water healthier, like a higher level of calcium. Zamzam water: a cure for sickness Apart from its ability to serve as satisfying food and drink, Zamzam water’s health benefits are also commended. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him & his family) said

essence of worship! Additionally, such a person can never become arrogant or proud, a logical result of true worship. Dua is our most potent weapon in all struggles of life as well as in jihad in the battlefield. During the battle of Badr, Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) stood up all night in prayer seeking Allah’s help in the battle between unequal armies that would follow the next day. In the decisive battles against the crusaders, Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi was busy day and night. His days were devoted to jihad. His nights were spent making Dua, crying, and seeking Allah’s help. We should make Dua at all times, not only during times of distress. We should ask for all of our needs: those related to this world as well as those related to the Hereafter. We should make Dua not only for ourselves, but also for our parents, brothers and sisters, spouses and children, relatives and friends, teachers and other benefactors, destitute and struggling Muslims everywhere. We should pray for them for the good in this world as well as in the Hereafter. The Prophet (Pbuh) said: “The Dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted. it was a healing from sickness. This is why pilgrims to Makkah to this day collect it in bottles to bring for relatives and friends back home who are ill. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him & his family) used to carry Zamzam water in pitchers and water skins back to Madinah. He used to sprinkle it over the sick and make them drink it. Wahab Ibn Munabbah, who was from the second generation of Muslims, said ‘I swear by Him in whose possession my life is, Allah

An angel is appointed to his side. Whenever he makes a beneficial Dua for his brother the appointed angel says, Aameen. And may you also be blessed with the same.’[Muslim, Hadith 4914] In the dark ages that we are living in today, everyday brings fresh news about atrocities committed against our brothers in Palestine, , , Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya, etc. And what do we do? We can continue to just feel frustrated and depressed. We can petition the determined perpetrators or a fictional “International Community.” We can just forget all of this and move on to some other subject. Or we can stand up before Allah and pray for His help, Who alone can help. Dua can change our life, our outlook, and our fate. It is the most potent weapon. ONE OF RIGHTEOUS DEEDS: HAJJ By Harun Yahya www.harunyahya.com If Allah helps you, no one can vanquish you. If He forsakes you, who can help you after that? So the believers should put their trust in Allah. (Surah Al 'Imran: 160)

Fear Allah wherever you are; if you follow an evil deed with a good one you will obliterate it; and deal with people with a good disposition. (Tirmidhi)

H

ighteous deeds” (amelunsalihan) are one of the key concepts of the Qur'an. In Arabic, the word “righteousness” comprises the meanings of good, beneficial and right. In Arabic, the verb “to amend”(islah) is also derived from the same root. Consequently, in English, every type of beneficial and good work or action done for the good of religion is expressed by the word “righteous deed.” In terms of the Qur'an, on the other hand, each act and all behaviour designed to seek the favour of Allah is a “righteous deed.”

The salvation of an individual is not attained only through faith; righteous deeds, the signs of sincere faith, also save the soul. Saying “I believe” yet failing to comply with the commandments of religion does not lead man to salvation. In the Qur'an Allah states the following about this issue: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, “We believe”, and that they will not be tested? We tested those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false. (Al-Ankabut, 2-3) The way a believer does righteous deeds proves his mettle. His deeds indicate his perseverance, stability, determination and loyalty-in other words the depth of his faith. In the Qur'an Allah informs us about the various kinds of righteous deeds. Communicating the message of Islam to people, striving for the prosperity and the benefit of the Muslims, trying to attain a better understanding of the Qur'an, solving every kind of personal and social problem of the Muslims; all these are important righteous deeds. The fundamental Islamic forms of worship, such as saying prayers to Allah, fasting, spending for the cause of Allah, and the pilgrimage to Mecca are also among the important righteous deeds: Righteousness does not consist in whether you turn your faces towards the east or the west; what is righteous is to believe in Allah and the last day, and the angels, and the Book, and the messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practise regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and in times of war. Such as do so are people of truth. Such are the Allah-fearing. (Al-Baqara, 177) Yet there is another point that deserves mention: what makes an act a righteous deed is not its result but the “intention” behind it.That is why for an act to be a righteous one, it should be done purely to seek the approval of Allah. This is what really distinguishes a “righteous deed” from “charity”, a concept prevalent in the ignorant society.A righteous deed is done to seek the approval of Allah; on the other hand, the concept of charity in an ignorant society, is based on a spirit of social solidarity and a personal desire to make a reputation as a “charity lover.” The verses below explain why the deeds of believers are by no means similar to alms-giving. They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil flies far and wide. And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive, (Saying)”We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks. We only fear a day of distressful wrath from our Lord.” (Al- Insan 7-10) If any acts ostensibly complying with the definition of “righteous deeds” are not intended to seek the good pleasure of Allah, they cease to be “righteous deeds.” This is simply because they are done to please other people. This is, in terms of the Qur'an,“associating partners with Allah”, which is a great sin. In the following verse, Allah explains how an act of worship done to attain not the approval of Allah, but other people loses its value and becomes an ordinary act. Woe to the worshippers, who are neglectful of their prayers; who only want to make a show of piety. (Al-Maun, 4-6) Similarly, spending, which is a righteous deed in the presence of Allah, becomes an ordinary act if done to demonstrate one's generosity in order to impress people. So does the pilgrimage to Mecca. Allah describes the difference between spending to gain His approval and to satisfy one's own desires: O you who believe! Do not cancel out your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen by others, believing neither in Allah nor in the last day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which there is little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it just a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with anything they have earned. And Allah does not guide those who reject faith. Those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, are like a garden, high and fertile: heavy rain falls on it, and makes it yield a double harvest, and if it does not receive heavy rain, light moisture suffices it. Allah sees well whatever you do. (Al-Baqara, 264-265) Hence, the result of each deed always rests with Allah. Each task should be done solely to please Him.A devoted believer who perform righteous deeds all throughout his life, carries out the regular prayers and makes the pilgrimage to Mecca will surely attain the gardens of heaven and will be rewarded most generously by Allah in the hereafter. Bush earns $200,000 for speaking in Surrey

On Oct 20, George W. Bush slipped invisibly into the City of Surrey, B.C. accompanied by his fellow ex-president Bill Clinton, where the two were scheduled to speak at Surrey’s $650 per seat summit on regional economic development at the Sheraton Surrey hotel. Having slipped by the several hundred peaceful protestors surging around the hotel entrance, Bush immediately banned the media from the convention room. Bush and Clinton spoke for about one hour to the summiteers. Bush was then escorted out the front doors of the Sheraton towards a waiting car. The protest, which was smaller and less rowdy than a recent demonstration in Vancouver outside a speech by former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney, took over a major intersection - 152nd Street and 104th Avenue - for about 30 minutes, snarling traffic. “Do your job and enforce the law,” shouted the demonstrators at the police, while Bush and former U.S. president Bill Clinton were inside the Guildford Sheraton Hotel speaking to about 500 people. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said afterwards that there were no arrests or

violent incidents. “It went very smoothly, very much according to plan. Grainger also added that the RCMP had no “lawful authority” to arrest Bush, adding that such decisions could only be made by the Canadian government. Road closures in the area lasted throughout the day and traffic was rerouted, causing minor delays, he added. The protest was called by Amnesty International and other groups, including the Canadian Centre for International Justice, which has argued that the Canadian government has the legal obligation under the UN Convention Against Torture to prosecute political leaders such as Bush who allegedly sanctioned the torture of prisoners. Amnesty International has urged the Canadian government to arrest Bush for violation of human rights. The protesters also chanted against the Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and Premier Christy Clark. While in attendance, Miracle newspaper reporter noticed that very few members of Muslims community were at the protest and no other Muslim Media was present.

21k Raised by Pakistani Canadian Cricket for flood

By: Khuram Rai Members of the Pakistani Canadian Cricket fraternity of BC got together in an effort to raise funds for the victims of devastating floods in Sindh, Pakistan. This effort was spearheaded by Mohammed Ashraf (Maitla) who assembled a team of friends to raise funds. It was decided that the funds will be sent to Imran Khan Foundation. Two main events were organized, a Tape Ball Cricket tournament held on the 16th and a fundraising dinner that was held on the 23rd of October. Furthermore, with the permission of The BCMA, volunteers collected funds at outside various Mosques and Musallahs after Juma prayers. An interesting aspect of

this effort was that all the expenses, including the cost of trophies, printing and design of posters and tickets, food, plates, glasses, drinks, sound system and venue were all donated by various businesses and members of the community. This means that not even a single penny of the donated money was spent to cover off these expenses. The fundraising diner was attended by about 250 people and ladies and children were a large portion of the attendees. One of the highlights of the dinner was when a young girl donated her whole Money Bank. A total of $20,010 Canadian dollars and Rs8500 Pakistani rupees were raised and have already been dispatched to IK Foundation in Pakistan.

The funds were sent via Best Currency Exchange and they too transferred the funds without charging any fees. The organizing committee was comprised of the following people; Sajid Hameed, Dr. Hafeez, Kashif Malik, Asim Malik, Zafar Khan, Khurram Rai, Hamza Malik, Waqar Jan, Amjid Abro, Waseem Khan, Aziz Mengel and Amjid Bajwa. Naveed Bin Anwar and Dr. Hafeez cohosted the event and Mr. Shujah Alam was the chief guest. It is said that it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness and this fundraising campaign was a gesture by the members of our community to light a small candle. The Miracle Media Group congratulates the organizers on a job well done.

Islamic History Month Canada Celebrated at Masjid Al Salaam

By David Ali On Oct 22, Mayor Derek Corrigan of Burnaby issued a proclamation at the beginning of the month declaring October Islamic History Month. The City has been making proclamation every year since October 2007, when the Federal Government first proclaimed, officially, Islamic History Month in Parliament. The Hon. Mauril Belanger (MP for Ottawa-Varnier and Official Opposition Critic for Canadian Heritage) introduced the motion in support of recognizing Islamic History Month Canada. Other Cities in BC, including Victoria, Surrey, Port Coquitlam and Vancouver have also issued proclamations for Islamic History Month. This year, Islamic History Month Canada was proud to host Michael Hamilton Morgan as its 2011 guest speaker. Michael’s elaborate introduction was presented by Sr. Tazul Ali, chairperson Women’s Council, at the evening event on October 22nd 2011 at Masjid Al Salaam. Michael Hamilton Morgan is an International Speaker, a nonprofit founder and former U.S. diplomat and also a nonfiction author and novelist. His keynote speech, at Masjid al Salaam, was based on his 2007 book, Lost History: the Ending Legacy of Muslim Scientists, Thinkers and Artists. In his speech Michael Morgan touched on the issues that certain Western groups stereotype Muslim culture as universally anti-modern, authoritarian and xenophobic, whereas in fact the historical record shows that Muslim civilization has unique traditions of pluralism, diversity and government by consensus. It has a strong tradition of enlightened leadership that helped shape the Western concept of the ideal leader. Our Prophets last sermon

proves that tradition can be found in the religion itself where it rejected racism and racial superiority in Islam. Michael also talked on other sources where Muslim civilization freely incorporated many other traditions, behaviors, nationalities and even faiths from Persia, Byzantine, India, Mediterranean and African sources. Early Arab-Muslim philosophers like Al Kindi explicitly endorsed the inclusion of all traditions and knowledge, even when from other faiths and nationalities. Michael also mentioned about the 12th Century World Map which was produced in Sicily by Al-Idrisi. This map is regarded as the most elaborate and complete description of the world made in medieval times. It was used extensively by travelers for several centuries and contained details descriptions of the Christian north, as well as the Islamic world, Africa and the Far East. He talked about Firnas, a Muslim poet, astronomer, musician, and engineer, who made several attempts to construct a flying machine, about SalaudDin, Ibn Sina

and Ibn Battuta who had travelled more than Marco Polo but failed to make the history. In the beginning of the event Br. David Ali introduced the MC Br. Mohammed Yasin who continued with the evening’s event. The event was concluded with sumptuous dinner prepared by the Directors of Burnaby Branch.

Parenting Styles Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Life, no doubt get busy day by day. Are we involving ourselves in things which we should really be involved, or just avoiding from other priorities? We as human often find excuses and reasons not to spend quality time with our loved ones. Some have involved themselves in habits which has no importance and any relevance in their life. When was the last time you had quality time with your family? Some may say always, sometimes and some has to really think about it. We are all surrounded by different work ethics and schedules but at the end, if you are a Parent, you have to demonstrate your Parenting Skills when you have to. Despite everything you do, your children play a very vital role in your life which cannot be replaced by anything. As a Parent, we always say :- “Their Happiness is Our Happiness”. As a matter of fact, saying it and doing it is totally two different things. Take a moment and think about it.

It is often seen that Parents blame the children and vice versa. Who is right and who is wrong? Sometimes there is no trust left between the two and slowly insecurity follows. The relationship starts falling apart. As a cautious and concerned Parent, you will be able to notice certain changes in behavior. It will be very healthy to right there and then take necessary steps to correct them. You have to take your time out to talk to these children when they need you. Someone whom they can trust and rely on for anything. Remember, Parent’s are not only Parent’s but they can be best friends! It is how the family relates to each other. Sometimes we as parent’s take things for granted, expecting things to be perfect all the time. Also, sometimes as parent’s we are not accustomed to changes that occurs around us. The truth is, we are scared of these changes, to accept them and implement them in our life’s because we have so many doubts in our minds. To avoid these situations have a open relationship with you children and you’ll notice a big difference around your loved ones. Value what you have and while you have!!

CWCN Hosts Seventh Women Conference in BC

The Canadian Women Community Network (CWCN) organized a grand gathering of the 7th Women Conference on Saturday Oct 29th at the New City Centre Library in Surrey, British Columbia. This was second conference in 2011 that this group of women have conducted. This conference was different in a couple of very significant ways. Firstly, the program included a very vibrant and inspirational youth session and multicultural celebration for Eid Ul Adha, which is the time for celebration for Muslims at the time of Hajj. The program was opened by emcee for the evening, Shabnam Khan, family counselor and one of the Directors of CWCN. She explained that the entire program would be divided into two sessions: 1) Youth session, 2) Women’s session presided by Dr. Syeda Saiqa, founding Director of CWCN, consisting of women speakers, and distinguished speakers Dr. Malek Moosa, familly physician and Sue Hammel, MLA for Surrey green timbers. The program started off with the recitation of Holy Quran by Sister Nada from AICP. The youth session was a delightful array of young blooming talented speakers who expressed their views in their unique, innocent, and pristine styles. They also emphasized making time for spirituality as a source of getting out of depression. Sahiba Khalid, youth volunteer for last 4 years, presented a power point on the activities of the network and gave a snapshot of previous conferences and workshops. Sahiba said that how volunteering for this organization has enhanced her people skills, technical skills and community skills - all very essential life skills for success in life. The stage was then taken by Nabilah Ahmed, as new graduate from BCIT in the field of Micro-Bio Engineering. She is also a Muslim convert. She reiterated the importance of being involved in the community and recognizing the facts what makes up the community and who we move around with at home, in school and in the neighborhood.. This set the stage for yet another very inspiring and enthusiastic young member - Roha Imran, a student of Accounting Honors Business in SFU,

to elaborate how to have a Holistic Approach towards Community building by developing Psycho-socio health in youth. She demonstrated this by quoting various studies as to how youngsters well-grounded in spirituality were found to be positive contributors to the society. A beautiful poetry recitation was presented by Tameen Imran and Aisha Khan. Youth session was eloquently emceed by Shabnam Khan. They were less likely to go into depression or take to smoking or any other form of ugly addictions. Women’s session consisted of three powerful speakers. Keynote speaker, Dr. Malek Moosa gave an inspirational speech on positive thinking and power of thankfulness from medical perspective. She shared some of the case histories of her patients who recovered through positive thinking. Doctor Malek Moosa a family doctor and physician, talked about the effects of positive and negative thinking have on our daily lives. She added that CWCN is helping women for the last 7 years and she had been referring many clients who received great social and emotional support from this group. Dr. Saiqa Syeda, the founding Director of the Canadian Women Community Network and a renowned community worker in Surrey, spoke about celebrating Eid-ul-Adha in a Multicultural Society. She said this time of the year reminds us of the similarities that we share with other religions and cultures. The main concept of Eid is to share happiness with others and learn to sacrifice our wishes for the sake of goodness as Prophet Abraham did. We have a complete manual of our life in front of us in the shape of last sermon of the Prophet Muhammad ( p.b.u.h) that he delivered at the time of Hajj-a-tul wada (last Haj), which completely denounced hatred against any group and demolished the centuries old concept of superiority on the basis of colour, caste, creed and religion. The basis of the teachings of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) is to serve humanity with out any bias. She emphasized the need to transfer our humanitarian values to the new generation through community outreach workshops and conferences, where youth can

fully participate in community building. She said that youth who started working with us six years back have developed public speaking and leadership skills. We need to channelize these resources for the larger interest of the community as youth can help other youth going through crisis. `Bridge the Gap` was the topic of the speech of our distinguished guest, Sue Hammel, MLA. She expressed her delight at the fact that the organization was able to help women and congratulated the board members for their achievements. She said that Canada is a true picture of multiculturalism. We Canadians share so many cultural events with each other that we end up having party all year round. She said that she is very delighted to find such a big turnout of women here for Eid celebration. Sue Hammel announced at the conference that she will work jointly and sponsor the next Eid celebration event organized by CWCN in Surrey. The event ended with the collective payer of thankfulness. The vote of thanks was given by Farah Khan, daughter of Riasat Ali Khan and one of the Directors of CWCN. She thanked all the representatives from community organizations, professional associations, supporters, media, guests, the board of Directors which includes Shama Bajwa, Shameemah Kalaichelven, Shabnam Khan, Nazia Arif

PCWS brings the diverse communities together & raises $7,500 for flood victims By: Shahnaz Rahman Pakistani Women’s Society coordinated and hosted a successful fund raising dinner and musical evening to support the victims of recent floods in Pakistan. The fundraising dinner was held on October 21st at the Royal Palace in Surrey. Over 200 people attended and supported the event. The society embarked on this initiative with two specific goals: 1) To raise funds for the victims of the recent floods in Pakistan 2) To promote and enhance solidarity between members of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi communities. We were pleased with the outcome in bringing communities together and raising $7,500. The donors and supporters of this event were

from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Ismaili community from East Africa. The Pakistani Consulate General Mr. Shuja Alam who attended this event expressed gratitude to PCWS for their efforts in raising funds and specifically for creating awareness in BC of the impact of the recent floods. This calamity in Pakistan has tragically rendered thousands homeless. PCWS donated the funds to the Canadian Red Cross who will be supporting the victims of the floods in Pakistan. The feedback on the event was positive. “The event was very well organized and it was a delight to see the diverse communities come together” said Dr. Qurban Madhani. Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society is grateful for the generous donations from

community members. We specially acknowledge the donated time and musical talent of the artists without whom this event would not have been possible. We would like to extend a big thank you to Navin Jaan of Pakistan, Hakuna Masti Band with Anil Sharma of India, Samia Rin and Ravi Datt of Bangladesh and Mr. Kamal Sharma for being the MC for the event. We would like to thank all the volunteers, supporters, donors and the people who attended and participated at this event particularly those who worked tirelessly to make this event a big success. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world, indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead

Rhetoric Politicking Heats Up

By: Tariq Mian (Toronto) Having mishandled its obligation to deliver, the NRO infected government has pushed Pakistan very close to the verge of complete disaster. As such the embattled rulers have no right to claiming unearned pride. A fake delivery is a disservice and the substandard governance is based on dishonesty and incapacitation. The 2008 elections were neither fair nor were they impartial, because a number of irregularities in voters’ list did occur. Such constitutional violation is severe enough to invalidate the results. Ironically, the regime’s addiction to power is meaningless, hence irritating. Furthermore, the tailored democracy has damaged the system beyond repair. So far the notion “democracy is the best revenge,” has proved to be nothing other than a political ploy. Quite expectedly, the political temperature is rising up, and the mudslinging has already gotten ugly. The present government has to rely on the politics of reconciliation to continue misleading the nation for the entire tenure despite its negative contribution. However, the government remains “the principal accused” of the contagious corruption & the related governance retardation. The troubled Railway & PIA and the

electricity suppliers including WAPDA and PEPCO are among some of the examples of its failure. In addition to the current rulers (power addicted vampires), other ‘political eagles’ are already muscling up to hunt for the vulnerable public and national resources. Indeed, that’s a source of further frustration to the general public living below poverty line. The poor people are left helpless suffering from extended hours of electricity deprivation; and are even devoid of basic necessities of life on account of the incompetent government. Despite PM Gilani’s constitutional empowerment, Zardari is still in the driving seat - busy manuvering/begging for more and more partners. His “unnatural love affair” with the coalition partners means no more agendas based on party’s ideology. Now the commercialists, the feudal lords, the capitalists, the right wingers or the left wingers all are more than welcome on board indiscriminately - enabling the regime to battle the official opposition in the parliament. GREAT! Oops! Wait a minute – don’t forget the favourite ministries were distributed among the joining partners as bait, of course. Though, the love affair is well insulated for the time being, it remains fragile as

Altaf bhai knows exactly well how and when to screw up the rulers. Politics of reconciliation usually ruins nation’s economy, as the constitutional requirement of check and balance is greatly compromised. In other words, a strong opposition is a guarantee that the political party in power is accountable to the parliament in session. Unsurprisingly, the ground reality still remains that Pakistan consists of a corrupt society, where people have no choice other than living in an obsolete system. The people, at all levels, are only familiar with a corrupt environment around them. Naturally, they look for the short cuts to get things done and they know for sure about the easy way out to stay off the hook. Furthermore, the breaking news every few hours on Pak channels is now a norm; thus the audience remain un-responsive. Certainly, the public prefers to ignore the boring stories probably because of their depressing factor. And now, with the political activity gearing up, the mudslinging is already gone ugly. Moreover, the fresh round of debates among the politicians is already under way. Interestingly enough, political rhetoric by each party is bound to get nastier. With some exception, almost all political parties are trying to impress the public with their misleading Resume/ CVs – along with false

What Imran Khan achieved in Lahore and why? By: Moeed Pirzada Is this not how Englishman William Wordsworth had once summed up his feelings about the French Revolution? But forget about the English and the French, and let’s be honest for once, let’s put those pretensions of cold logic and those million cautions aside and let’s admit: is this not how most of us felt when we saw thousands and thousands of young fearless Pakistanis, stretching as far as the eye could see, waving and singing and dancing along with Shehzad Roy and Strings in PTI’s rally in Lahore? You may not like to admit it but let me admit: this is how I felt; tantalising, tingling sensations of love and joy travelled along my spine; there were moments when I uncontrollably laughed and there were moments when I helplessly cried. But these tears rolling down my cheeks were tears of happiness and relief for the whole of my life from pre-school days till now was flashing and dancing in front of me. And for the first time in many many years — I have lost count how many — I felt that we in Pakistan are neither idiots nor zombies and nor some forgotten children of a lesser God with limited imagination but part of the living humanity of this beautiful blue planet and we have hope! Imran Khan — whom our mentally challenged liberal elite, in their thinly disguised desperation to appease Washington, had often referred to as ‘Taliban Khan’ — now slapped them with a political rally that made all the difference. It had young men, it had beautiful Pakistani women, it had innocent children and it had music. And these men and women and children entered the historic Minar-e-Pakistan not as bonded or captured Kunta Kinte slaves of Alex Haley transported in commandeered and hijacked public transport forcibly seized by the factotums of the Punjabi bureaucracy but walked on their feet, with poise and discipline, as free humanity. Before and after the American Civil War, researchers and the captains of industry found out that free men are more productive than slaves. The electric enthusiasm of these Pakistanis drawn to the message of a cricket captain also made it clear that they were there for they believed in something; perhaps it was their revulsion to sickening corruption, perhaps it was their desire for national self-respect or perhaps they just wanted to break the cancerous inertia of Pakistani politics, but one thing was clear: these baby boomers, children of Pakistan’s demographic dividend, want change. The primary assumption of Pakistani politics since the 1980s is that the Pakistani public and voters are some sort of pre-Neanderthal idiots; the secondary assumption is that they will always remain so. It is this duo of assumptions around which the politics of ‘notables’ and ‘electables’ is built. A smart, mature, wise Pakistani politician is thus one who firmly believes in this and preaches the opposite. He knows that elections have to be won by managing a system

of petty spoils, biradaris

(clans), pirs (holy men) and sajada nasheens (hereditary pirs) and that is why thanedars (policemen), patwaris (land record officers), superintendents of police and district officers are so important to him. This is why a typical winning politician has no need to invest in developing any systematic view of public welfare at the national level. And this is why today none of the major parties has any political message, any national narrative, any idea worth appealing to anyone whose IQ is more than 40. In short, since the 1980s Pakistani politics has no defining ideas that can connect almost 200 million people divided across barriers of age, education, awareness, ethnicity and sectarianism. This is where Imran Khan’s speech at the Minar-ePakistan becomes a turning point in Pakistani politics. I could feel that he did not have the charisma of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto or the oratorical skills of Benazir, but what he had, in his simple straightforward words, was something different. He did not spend much time in blasting Nawaz or Zardari, whom he referred to as leaders of the past. Instead, he used his rather brief speech to hint upon a politics of ideas and issues. No doubt abolishing the patwari system or reforming the police are easier said than done, but he has laid the ideas or their seeds on the political table. The absence of usual demagoguery was also remarkable. Pakistani politicians, bereft of overarching ideas, have always gone overboard when they talk of Kashmir, of India, of the US, especially when a pulpit is set in Lahore. But Imran chose his words carefully; no liberation of Kashmir, no befitting responses to India, and no demonisation of the US either. On every issue he said something measured, which made sense and resonated with the demographic dividend spread all around Minar-e-Pakistan and those countless millions who were connected through television screens all across the world like one single organism. What will happen? Electoral politics does not change overnight. For the PTI and Imran Khan, and Pakistan’s baby boomers, there is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip. And they have lots of genuine learning to do. The Lahore power play was an effective demonstration of the innate appeal of their message, their ability of strategic communication and their administrative skills, but much more is needed, for the

Continued on pg 29

claims. Thank God, the naive general public is somewhat politically aware now, so the political wrangling definitely remains a tough sell for the political leadership with questionable past record – of no integrity. The status quo of red tape is the product of poor governance. Even for the genuine matters of daily routine, unlawful gratification is the key for faster facilitation (jumping the queue). Although, the magic of capitalism has forced the whole world to bend over backward intensifying the financial strain, yet with some appropriate corrective measures quite a few nations have been able to withstand the global crisis. Most probably, no prosperous progress can be expected from a chaotic Pakistan, where anarchy or rhetoric politicking is on the rise. An ongoing prolonged hours load shedding has crushed the national industries leading to unemployment, lower exports, lower foreign exchange, expensive items of basic necessities of life and less tax collection. Poor governance prepares a breeding ground - ripe for corruption-- from top to bottom. Pathetic! The uncontrolled power theft is also adding to the misery. Shortage of natural gas, CNG and petrol all are negatively contributing factors. Sadly, the defiant rulers and the incompetent functionaries are unable to appreciate and follow the Law and Constitution as required. In this tug of war, main players are already on the front line in anticipation of the upcoming general elections in 2013. As Pakistan has been facing serious challenges for quite a while, there is no time left for political intrigues. In fact, there is an urgent need for a massive common action in search of a positive change to find a flawless political system via re-structuring to defuse the messy condition. Message is clear: Just be Pakistani! Language and ethnicity card is too dangerous and embarrassing if used for political gains. A quicker reversal of the ongoing “negative momentum” is absolutely necessary so that a capable political leadership is in place before it’s too late. Historically, such situation gets worse before it gets better to settle the dust for a positive change. Certainly, Pakistan’s woes are far from over unless and until the whole society comes on a single page with heart and soul.

EID MENU FROM AROUND THE WORLD

The menu is as much an integral part of Eid celebrations as the ritual and customs. It’s very much an integral part of the Eid-ulFitar celebrations. Every Muslim family takes great care to prepare the exclusive dishes on Eid. The idea is to make the menu over-the-top and include food which are not regularly eaten . But it must not be forgot-

ten that before indulging in the delicacies, one needs to say his prayers before the Eid feast. It is customary to begin eating in the name of Allah, the One God, and thank Him for all His grace and kindness. Here are some recipes from around the world for you to try this Eid and earn some praise from the guests. ob (Lahem

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

World Diabetes day is observed on November 14. This year’s slogan is “Let’s take control of diabetes. Now.” World Diabetes day was created in 1991 when the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization joined together to bring attention to the public for the threat of diabetes in their health. In 2007 the United Nations approved the resolution to celebrate November 14th as World Diabetes Day. World Diabetes Day will allow governments to outline proper support needed for diabetic patients and raise recognition to diabetes. World Diabetes Day marks the celebration of Frederick Banting’s birthday. Frederick Banting and Charles Best created an idea of medicine to help diabetic patients. Which led to insulin, discovered in 1922. More than two million Canadians currently have type 1 and type 2 diabetes. As many as one third of these people are unaware they have this condition. It is estimated that over three million Canadians were diagnosed with diabetes by 2010. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90 per cent of all diagnosed cases and is one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada, with over 60,000 new cases yearly. What is Diabetes? Diabetes is caused by too little of insulin, resistance to insulin or sometimes both. A person with diabetes has high blood sugar because: -the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin -the muscle, fat, and liver cells don’t respond to the insulin properly -or both above Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas to control the blood sugar. Type of Diabetes: There are three major types of diabetes: -Type 1 Diabetes: usually diagnosed in the childhood stages. Type 1 diabetes is when the body make too little of insulin or no insulin at all. -Type 2 Diabetes: more common than type 1 diabetes and often times people don’t know they have it. Usually occurs in adults. Type 2 diabetes is where the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin to keep the blood glucose levels normal because the body won’t respond to insulin. -Gestational Diabetes: usually occurs in pregnant women at any time and they develop high blood glucose. These women who have gestational diabetes during pregnancy have a higher risk for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease later in life.

Controlling diabetes The onset of type 2 diabetes can be delayed by increasing physical activity, healthy eating and losing weight. Controlling levels of glucose and levels of insulin, which help the body use glucose for energy, are both keys to managing type 2 diabetes. Given the progressive nature of the disease, most people living with type 2 diabetes may require multiple medications with different mechanisms of action to achieve optimal glycemic control and to manage co-morbidities. As beta-cell function declines, many drug therapies become less effective over time. Results from the Diabetes in Canada Evaluation (D.I.C.E.) study demonstrated that almost 50 per cent of study participants with diagnosed type 2 diabetes did not achieve the Canadian Diabetes Association Guidelines target level of blood glucose (HbA1C less than or equal to 7 per cent). The percentage of patients who did not have their blood glucose levels under control increased to more than 62 per cent among those who had type 2 diabetes for 15 years or more. This failure to achieve adequate control occurs for a variety of reasons, including: the progressive nature of the disease, some issues of tolerability and durability with available medications, and lack of adherence to lifestyle modifications and therapy. In a survey conducted in 2007 with 200 Canadian physicians (160 GPs and 40 specialists) who treat people living with type 2 diabetes, one third of GPs and two-thirds of endocrinologists feel that there are not enough treatment options for their diabetes patients. Impact of living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes It is estimated that 40 per cent of Canadians with living with diabetes will develop long term complications. Canadian adults living with diabetes are twice as likely to die prematurely than nondiabetics. For people living with type 2 diabetes, life expectancy may be shortened by five to10 years. Every year, diabetes is a contributing factor in the deaths of some 41,500 Canadians. Approximately 80 per cent of people living with diabetes will die as a result of heart disease or stroke. The financial burden for people living with diabetes is two to three times higher than it is for those without diabetes with direct costs for medications and supplies between $1,000 and $15,000 a year.

The Canadian Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes and its complications cost the Canadian healthcare system approximately $13.2 billion every year. Provincial statistics Diabetes affects more than 800,000 people, or 8.73 per cent of Ontario’s population. 75,000 people in Nova Scotia live with diabetes with the greatest total prevalence rate found in males (11.89 per cent in males vs. 6.9 per cent in females). Nova Scotia had over 5,300 new cases in 2001/02. Approximately 120,000 Albertans live with diabetes and each month an additional 1,000 people in Alberta are diagnosed with the disease. More than 67,000 Manitobans are affected by diabetes and each day 16 Manitobans are diagnosed with this disease, compared to the national average of 11 new cases diagnosed daily. In BC, there are more than 210,000 people living with diabetes, excluding the one in three people who have diabetes but do not know it.15 By 2010, without action, more than 325,000 British Columbians will be suffering from diabetes. 3

Imran : Continued from pg 27 task to rid Pakistan of the politics of non-sense is humungous. Those piranhas of Pakistani politics whose teeth are deep into the flesh of the Pakistani people and their pockets will engineer anything conceivable under the sun to woo their vote banks to maintain their stranglehold on Pakistani politics and the economy and this moment in Lahore has shown them the ‘nightmare trailer’ that will now kickstart a new behind-the-scenes campaign to contain Imran Khan and his demographic dividend. But one thing is certain: politics will change. The PPP may be able to manoeuvre and shield its safe vote banks in interior Sindh and the Seraiki belt from this new wave in politics but what about the PML-N? Whether Nawaz and Shahbaz have realised it or not, after this PTI power play in Lahore, PMN-L stalwarts are standing in a Turkish hamaam (steam bath) without towels. For three years they had chosen careful rhetoric to painstakingly build an identity around anti-Zardari sloganeering, against corruption and for hypernationalism, but the practical demands of politics and repeated compromises drained all credibility from their strategic communications and now a new untainted entity has emerged representing all what they had stood for. Today the PML-N leadership stands upon a dead heap of old loyalties and expectations of the spoils, but in weeks and months the emerging sense of change will trickle down across the Punjabi towns. Shahbaz Sharif’s recent mantras of Habib Jalib and his inability to understand that he does not fit into Jalib’s revolutionary context only showed how seriously disconnected they have been from the emerging reality around them. It is time for Pakistani politics to pause, readjust and reinvent itself. This is what Imran Khan and his followers have achieved in Lahore.

Police rack up riot suspects

The Vancouver police recommended the first wave of charges Monday against 60 suspected Stanley Cup rioters, more than four months since the largest crime spree in the history of B.C. A total of 163 charges have been recommended to Crown counsel against the suspected rioters in an investigation Vancouver police Chief Jim Chu described as “daunting, time-consuming and exhaustive.” Twenty-one Surrey residents have charges recommended against them, the most of any municipality. Twelve Vancouver residents, the next highest number, are being recommended for charges. “In the minds of many, today has

been a long time coming, and I share those frustrations,” said Chu at Vancouver Police Department headquarters. “I wish there could have been a quicker and simpler way to bring the rioters into the courts.” The suspected rioters have yet to be charged, so their names cannot be released. Of the 60, a total of 50 men and 10 women face a primary charge of participating in a riot. About 70 per cent of the first 60 suspects turned themselves in. VPD Sgt. Dale Weidman, the lead investigator on the Integrated Riot Investigative Team, said of the first 60 suspected rioters, additional video-footage evidence has resulted in

extra charges recommended against eight - and has corroborated crimes already detected for 37. “This is just the start of it,” Weidman said. Crown spokesman Neil Mackenzie said a Crown Riot Prosecution Team has been put together to handle the case files - some of which near 500 pages, while all contain video and photographic evidence. “I think, realistically, it’s not unreasonable to expect we may see files in court by the end of November,” Mackenzie said. Police believe 500 to 700 suspected rioters will be charged for various offences in the coming months. IRIT members pored over a “staggering” amount of video evidence more than 5,000 hours - over a two-week span at a high-tech lab in Indianapolis

Butt, Asif found guilty of spot fixing Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were found guilty on Tuesday of taking bribes to fix part of a test match against England in a case that prosecutors said revealed rampant corruption at the heart of international cricket. Former captain Butt, 27, and opening bowlers Asif, 28, and 19-year-old Mohammad Aamir, who had already admitted his part in the scam, plotted to bowl deliberate no-balls at pre-arranged times during the Lord`s test in August last year. Aamir had pleaded guilty to the charges two weeks before Butt and Asif went on trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, but his guilty plea could not be revealed until the end of the trial of his team mates. The jury deliberated for nearly 17 hours to reach verdicts on both charges against Butt and the cheating charge against Asif, then needed a further three hours to convict Asif on the corrupt payments charge. The men will be sentenced on Wednesday, with Butt and Asif facing up to seven years in jail or large fines. The International Cricket Council has already banned Butt for 10 years with five suspended,

Asif for seven years with two suspended, and Aamar for five years straight after finding them guilty of corruption in February. The “spot fixing” plot was orchestrated by Butt and sports agent Mazhar Majeed, the court was told. During the three-week trial, the jury heard how an undercover reporter recorded Majeed, 36, boasting of how he could arrange for Pakistan players to rig games for money and how huge sums could be made for gambling syndicates. Majeed said he had been carrying out match-fixing for 2-1/2 years, had seven players from Pakistan`s national side working for him, and had made “masses and masses of money”. He told Mazher Mahmood, an undercover journalist with the now defunct News of the World newspaper, that it would cost between 50,000 pounds ($81,000) and 80,000 pounds ($130,000) to fix “brackets”, a set period of a match on which punters bet. Rigging the outcome of a test match would cost one million pounds, Majeed told him. The agent was secretly filmed accepting 150,000 pounds in cash from the journalist as part of an arrange-

ment to rig games. Majeed promised the reporter that Asif and Aamir would deliver three no-balls at specific points during the Lord`s test. The no-balls were bowled as promised, with the probability of someone predicting this by chance estimated by a cricket statistician as 1.5 million to one. Butt and Asif denied any involvement in the plot but were convicted of conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments, the Press Association reported. Butt, appointed Pakistan`s captain during last year`s tour of England, told the court that the agent had asked him to rig parts of crunch games at the 2010 Twenty20 World Cup and last summer`s test series, but he had ignored the requests. Butt, who made his test debut in 2003 and has played 33 test matches and 78 one-day internationals, admitted he did not fulfil his duty to inform the cricketing authorities about the corrupt approach. The

in which more than 15,000 criminal acts were tagged or identified. Chu confirmed it cost the VPD about $300,000 for the video analysis, with the provincial government picking up the tab. Nearly half of the cost covered travel and accommodations. The VPD’s riot-related website has garnered more than 610 tips, with 49 of the 125 suspected rioters identified. Chu said more images will be posted at vancouver. ca/police/riot2011 and the VPD will look for other ways that the public can assist. “We still expect hundreds of people to be charged and a large determination of how successful we are will be the public’s help,” said Chu. Source: The Province verdicts came on the day Butt`s wife Gul gave birth to their second son in Lahore. “It is a day of sadness and happiness for us,” Butt`s father Zulfiqar Butt told Reuters. “We are shocked by this verdict and will fight to the end. But at the same time God has given us a new life.” Asif was first selected for Pakistan in 2005 and has represented his country in 23 tests and 38 one-day internationals. He declined to answer reporters` questions as he left court. “This is a case of cheating, pure and simple,” said Detective Chief Supt. Matthew Horne after the verdict. “The defendants have let down the cricketing world, their fans and the hard working people that buy tickets to watch,” he told reporters. “I am not sure these men really appreciated how much they were admired by cricket fans; they were role models to countless children around the world and have betrayed their trust.” Source: Dawn
