A mosque was among several Palestinian structures destroyed by the Israeli army in the West Bank village of Khirbet al-Tawil for having been built without permits. Tuesday’s demolitions came a day after the Israeli supreme court gave the state 90 days to propose “ways to facilitate participation of local Palestinians... in planning processes” in Area C, which is the 60 percent of the West Bank under full Israeli control. “The soldiers came and destroyed a mosque and three homes they said were built without permit in Area C,” Ayman Bani Fadel, mayor of Khirbet al-Tawil near Nablus, told the AFP news agency. The Civil Administration, the military body that administers Area C, confirmed the “demolition of eight buildings that were built illegally inside firing zones”. A statement said the buildings were destroyed “after the residents appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice and

Pakistan committed to eradicate terrorism, says Nawaz

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday reiterated that Pakistan was fully committed to eliminate menace of terrorism from its soil and would never allow use of its territory against any country, including Afghanistan. The prime minister, who is on a three-day official visit to the United Kingdom, had a meeting with his British counterpart, Prime Minister David Cameron here at 10 Downing Street and discussed “matters of bilateral interest, the regional situation as well as other issues of international importance.” Sharif recalled the visit of British premier to Pakistan last year and said he was here to reciprocate the sentiments expressed by PM Cameron. The prime minister said Pakistan had suffered a lot due to terrorism and extremism, and was determined to tackle the menace, under its newly formulated national security policy. The government of PM Sharif is currently engaged in peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban to try to end a seven-year insurgency. Since the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan

(TTP) began their campaign of violence in 2007, Thousands of civilians and military personnel have been killed in bomb and gun attacks around Pakistan. Nato countries including Britain also want Pakistan to help tackle the Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan as foreign troops prepare to leave by the end of this year. Premier Sharif appreciated the continued support and assistance by the DFID UK to Pakistan for different development projects. Earlier, Prime Minister Cameron warmly welcomed his Pakistani counterpart and reiterated UK’s all-out support in its pursuit of strengthening economy and achieving socio-economic development of the South Asian country. He also backed the Pakistani government’s efforts in combating terrorism and extremism.During the meeting, the two sides discussed current level of bilateral ties in various areas, including trade and economy, and renewed their commitment to further strengthen these relations.

US panel urges action on Pakistan religious freedom

I An expert panel on Wednesday urged the United States to add Pakistan to a blacklist of violators of religious freedom, saying that the Ahmadi minority suffers “apartheidlike” conditions. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom, which advises the government on policy but does not take action on its own, urged the State Department to add Pakistan to its list of “countries of particular concern”subject to potential sanctions. In an annual report, the commission said Pakistan “represents the worst situation in the world for religious freedom” among countries that are not already on the US blacklist and that conditions in the past year “hit an alltime low.” Robert George, chairman of the commission, voiced alarm over treatment of the Ahmadis, who were declared by Pakistan to be non-Muslims in 1974. “The Ahmadi minority in Pakistan live under something really resembling an apartheid-like system subject to severe legal restrictions,” said George, comparing the situation to South Africa’s 1948-1994 system of forced racial separation. “They suffer from officially sanctioned discrimination, not just social or cultural prejudice,” he told reporters. Ahmadis have faced a series of deadly attacks and desecration of their graves. Ahmadis boycotted last year’s

election because they would have had to identify themselves as non-Muslims. The report also voiced alarm about Pakistan’s treatment of Hindus, Christians and Shia Muslims. It said Pakistan has sentenced to death or jailed for life 36 people for blasphemy, far more than any other country. The United States has urged Pakistan to improve its treatment of religious minorities but has stopped short of putting the country, an uneasy ally in the Afghanistan war, on the blacklist. The United States designates eight nations as countries of particular concern: China, Eritrea, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan. The commission urged the State Department redesignate all of them. Besides Pakistan, the commission once again called on the State Department to add to the list Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Vietnam. And, in an addition from the previous year, the commission called on the State Department to put Syria on the list, saying both President Bashar al-Assad and his largely Sunni rebel opponents are responsible for “egregious”violations. The United States has imposed export restrictions and other measures against countries of particular concern although successive administrations have waived sanctions against ally Saudi Arabia. Muslims escorted out of CAR capital Bangui

Peacekeeping troops have escorted around 1,300 Muslims out of the Central African Republic’s capital city, removing one of the last pockets of Muslims from Bangui, in a nation torn apart by religious violence. Peacekeepers stood by on Sunday, as Christians, some armed with machetes and bows and arrows, swarmed into and looted houses in Bangui’s northern PK12 neighbourhood, which had been a Muslim district in the majority Christian south. “We are leaving to save our lives,” Mohamed Ali Mohamed, who was born and brought up in the area, told Reuters news agency as fellow Muslims tied jerry cans to trucks ahead of the trip. Foreign troops have escorted thousands of Muslims to relative safety in the north of the Central African Republic. But some leaders fear that will make permanent divisions that have led to talk of partition after 18 months of conflict. Central African Republic’s minister for reconciliation last week criticised the evacuations, warning they would play into the hands of Muslim rebels who want to create an independent state in the north. Auguste Boukanga, president of the URD party which remained neutral in the conflict, echoed these concerns, calling on the

2,000 French and over 5,000 African peacekeepers to instead stick to their mandate of disarming the gunmen. Giuseppe Loprete, head of the local office of the International Organisation for Migration, the UN agency involved in the evacuation, said Muslims living near the central mosque and in PK5, another Bangui neighbourhood, did not want to leave. “We are working on social cohesion ... I’m not sure that they want to leave. Actually they told us they prefer to stay in Bangui,” he said. Some of the departing Muslims torched their cars as they could not take them in the convoy but did not want Christians to be able to use them once they had left. Mainly Muslim rebels, known as Seleka, seized Bangui last year after complaining they had been marginalised by President Francois Bozize’s government. Their time in power was marked by abuses and killings that led to the creation of Christian self-defence militia. Seleka leader Michel Djotodia stepped down in January under international pressure as violence spiralled out of control. Interim authorities, backed by French and African peacekeepers, are still struggling to restore order and rights groups say parts of the country have experienced “religious cleansing”. “It is a shame but there is nothing we can do,” said Dieudonne Bignilaba, a Christian resident. “For many years we lived together but they were the ones who brought the weapons here to kill us.” After watching their former neighbours leave, from behind a thin white rope barrier put up by Congolese peacekeepers, hundreds of Christians, including women and children, took part in the looting. Many chanted “Liberation, Liberation!” Source: Al-Jazeera

Egyptians reel from mass death sentence

Five months ago, 30-year-old Abu Bakr Ismail, a pharmacist and father of two, was arrested and taken to jail. The move stunned his family, who say Ismail was an observant, traditional Muslim. “My brother is an innocent man,” 29-year-old Amr Ismail said. “He was arrested because he was bearded and memorised the Quran.” On Monday, he became one of the 683 people sentenced to death in a Minya court for charges relating to rioting at a police station in Edwa on August 14 last year the same day security forces killed hundreds of protesters in Cairo. All defendants, including the imprisoned Muslim Brotherhood supreme guide, Mohamed Badie, were accused of being members or supporters of the outlawed Brotherhood and Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from the presidency by the army last year. Before the sentences can be carried out, Egyptian law requires the presiding judge to confirm them after referral to AlAzhar Grand Mufti, Shawki Allam, who can reject or accept the ruling. Many believe this is simply a formality. Late Monday evening, the Egyptian prosecutor general, Hesham Barakat, issued notice to appeal against the sentence, but this has not com-

forted family members of the accused. Nahed Mohamed, the wife of Ezzat Mohamed, 44, said she had no idea why her husband was arrested while praying in a Minya mosque. Since Monday’s sentence was passed, she and their four children have been praying for his release. “What can I do? The judges have the final word,” she said. The court also upheld 37 of 529 death sentences it handed down late last month against accused Muslim Brotherhood members, with the remaining 492 sentenced to life in prison. Of the 683 men sentenced on Monday, several dozen were in custody, while those still at large have been offered a retrial if they turn themselves in. The Brotherhood’s political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, said the ruling “contradicts all of the world’s legal norms”. Foreign governments and human rights groups also condemned the sentences. “It is impossible to believe that such proceedings could meet even the most basic standards of justice,” said Jen Psaki, a spokesman for the US State Department, while Amnesty International said the trials were “deeply flawed and grossly unfair”. Amr Ismail said each of the convicted men, including his brother, had more than 100 pages of allegations brought against them, but they were not allowed to see any of the evidence. In Cairo, small clashes and protests broke out over news of the sentences. Arrests and injuries were reported at the Al-Azhar University campus after police and security personnel confronted demonstrators there, but the rest of the city remained relatively calm. Ukraine to get $17bn in IMF loans

The International Monetary Fund has approved a $17bn two-year loan programme for Ukraine, as -Kiev continues to fight pro-Moscow separatists in the east of the country. Wednesday’s action by the IMF’s 24-member executive board, which includes representatives from Russia and the United States, opens the way for an immediate release of $3.2bn to Ukraine, which faces deep fiscal problems in addition to months of political crisis. The loans are subject to IMF demands that Ukraine cuts subsidies for fuel, reduces its large deficit, controls pay rises, reduces corruption, and reforms its banking system. Pro-Moscow separatists seized government offices in more Ukrainian towns on Wednesday, a further sign that authorities in Kiev are losing control of the country’s eastern industrial heartland that borders Russia. The unrest in the east follows months of upheaval from anti-government protests and Russia’s subsequent annexation of the Crimea region, which had already pushed Ukraine’s economy to the brink of bankruptcy. Christine Lagarde, IMF managing director and chair, said: “Deep-seated vulnerabilities—together with political shocks—have led to a major crisis in Ukraine. The economy is in recession, fiscal balances have deteriorated, and the financial sector is under significant stress. “Risks to the programme are high. In particular, further escalation of tensions with Russia and unrest in the east of the country pose a substantial risk to the economic outlook.” The international organisation has warned that the Ukraine economy faces a 5 percent contraction this year, even with the two-year loan deal. Some of the initial disbursements could be turned around to pay off an outstanding $2.2bn bill for natural gas from Russia, which has threatened to cut off fuel supplies to its former Soviet republic, according to the AFP news agency. The country already owes the IMF money under previous loan programmes. but the new loan could be used to repay off that. The IMF has been wary about lending to Ukraine after two previous loan plans since 2008 failed because of the government’s lack of adherence to reform conditions set by the global body. It has insisted on the reduction of huge fuel subsidies and improved efforts against widespread corruption in the government. The Ukrainian government, in power until elections are held on May 25, has already promised to raise natural gas prices by more than 50 percent from Thursday. However, the overthrow of the pro-Russia government of President Viktor Yanukovich in February, and the installation of a pro-Western interim government that pledged reforms, opened the door to a new loan programme. Acting Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has promised to implement the IMF-proposed reforms, including a fuel hike that will be unpopular and politically difficult to enact. Source: Al-Jazeera

Afghan president accuses U.S., U.K. of still operating ‘illegal’ detention facilities

President Hamid Karzai accused British and U.S. forces on Tuesday of continuing to operate “illegal” detention facilities in the country, another volley in the rancorous disagreement between the Afghan leader and his foreign backers over what to do with captured Taliban suspects. A Karzaiappointed investigation panel found six Afghan detainees at a British-run facility at Kandahar Air Field in the south and another 17 at a British detention facility at Camp Bastion in Helmand province, according to commission leader Gen. Ghalum Farooq Barakzai. He said no detainees were found at the American facilities but said they should no longer even exist. The coalition has in recent years transferred thousands of detainees to Afghan authorities, and earlier this year American and U.K. officials protested when Karzai ordered dozens of suspects they considered a danger to be freed instead of tried in court. British military authorities said in a statement that “detainees are held at the request

of the Afghan authorities when there is evidence linking them to criminal activities.” The statement said detention is crucial to removing insurgents trying to injure and kill troops and civilians. U.S. Defence Department spokeswoman Elissa Smith said in a statement that “Every facility that we use for detention is well known not only by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, but also by the (International Committee of the Red Cross).” The flareup is the latest rift between Karzai and his ostensible allies, who have been frustrated with the president’s increasingly antiAmerican rhetoric and his refusal to sign a security agreement to keep a small U.S. force of trainers in the country after the NATO-led coalition ends its mission and withdraws at the end of the year. Washington is hoping Karzai’s successor will help reset relations, but a presidential election held April 5 has yielded no clear winner and so a runoff must be held. That means it may be mid-July before a new leader is named,

leaving Karzai in charge. Karzai has long railed against the existence of a U.S. - and British-run detention centres on Afghan soil -- where hundreds of other prisoners were held without charge as enemy combatants starting in 2002 -- as an illegal violation of Afghan sovereignty and a symbol of disregard for his elected government. His statement Tuesday appeared to have come after the revelation that some detainees were still being held by British forces after dozens of others were handed over to the Afghan side last year. The U.S., under pressure from Karzai, signed an agreement to transfer its prisons and detainees into Afghan custody. British forces in Afghanistan are allowed to detain suspects for 96 hours but can hold them longer in “exceptional circumstances.” Karzai has repeatedly said any foreign-run prisons or jails in Afghanistan are illegal. The U.S. handed over the Parwan Detention Center -- near the American military’s Bagram Air Field, north of Kabul -- to Afghan authorities in 2012 un-

der an agreement that they would be tried in Afghan courts. Karzai has referred to the Parwan prison as a “Taliban-producing factory,” where innocent Afghans have been tortured into hating their country. He called it a “very big step regarding the sovereignty of Afghanistan” when the prison was finally handed over to Afghan control. The British military also transferred dozens of its detainees from Camp Bastion to the Afghan government last year, but the U.K. has denied its detention centres are illegal. It was unclear Tuesday how many of the 23 detainees seen by the Afghan commission were newly captured or if they remained behind during last year’s detainee transfer. Source: CTV News

Israel ‘set settler record’ Iran’s Rouhani defends amid peace talks nuclear deal talks Israel promoted plans or approved tenders for nearly 14,000 new settler homes on occupied Palestinian land during the nine months of peace talks, an Israeli monitor group said as the negotiation period formally ended. The Peace Now group said on Tuesday that the scale of the plans for East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank was “unprecedented”, with prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government approving the equivalent of about 50 new homes a day, or about 1,500 a month. According to Peace Now’s figures, there were on average about 1,385 settler homes approved during Netanyahu’s first government, while an average of 1,389 a year were approved under the government of Ehud Olmert. “Netanyahu broke construction records during the nine-month peace talks,” Yariv Oppenheimer, the head of Peace Now, told the AFP news agency. All Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territory are illegal under international law. Palestinians had wanted a complete settlement freeze as a fundamental condition of resuming talks. Netanyahu rejected the notion that settlement building ran counter to peace efforts. The Peace Now report was released on the same day a US-imposed deadline expired for progress on Israeli-Palestinian talks. Israel last week suspended negotiations with

Palestinian leaders after Hamas, which controls the West Bank, agreed to form a unity government with the West Bank-based Fatah. However, their progress had stuttered ever since their relaunch last year by the US secretary of state, John Kerry. Also on Tuesday, the Reuters news agency reported that Israeli forces had demolished several structures, including a mosque, in a Palestinian village. A Reuters correspondent witnessed several hundred soldiers deployed in Khirbet al-Taweel, in the occupied West Bank, around dawn. They guarded six bulldozers that reduced to rubble buildings that were constructed without Israeli permits. Palestinians say such documents are nearly impossible to obtain. Villagers said the stone mosque was built in 2008, and that soldiers removed prayer rugs and holy scriptures before tearing it down. Other razed buildings included three one-storey family houses, animal shelters and a communal well. Locals said around 30 people were made homeless. The Israeli army did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “I went to make my dawn prayers at the mosque and found the army surrounding it,” said resident Abdel Fattah Maarouf, 63. “Then they tore it down. They want this area so they can build settlements in it.” Source: Al-Jazeera

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran has accused his critics of using lies to oppose his policies, including nuclear talks with world powers, and says a deal restricting Iran’s nuclear programme would benefit the country. In an interview with state television broadcast on Tuesday, Rouhani suggested his critics were a “tiny minority” who had profited from sanctions and feared losing out if they were removed. Rouhani and his negotiators have been under pressure from those who oppose talks with the six powers - the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany known as the P5+1. The P5+1 is seeking restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme in return for an end to sanctions against Tehran. The two side hope to meet a July deadline for an agreement. Rouhani’s opponents, many of them from the administration of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have stepped up their campaign and accuse Rouhani of sacrificing national pride and revolutionary identity for the sake of an agreement. But, in the televised interview, Rouhani said he would not compromise when it came to the national interest and that sanctions were a “big injustice”. “Through lies and hype, some people try to derail the government from its path.

This is against national interests and the leader’s order ...We do not compromise on people’s interests. “Sanctions were a big injustice and our nation suffered ... but a handful profited, as sanctions removed transparency in society and economy. Our people are happy about removal of the sanctions, and just a tiny minority is angry because they have come to lose ... that’s where all attempts at tarnishing the government originate,” he added. Rouhani did not identify his critics or give examples of exaggeration. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who wields unmatched power in Iran’s political system, has cautiously endorsed the talks. However, he has insisted that Tehran keeps the right to uranium enrichment for scientific research, expressing scepticism that the West is prepared to abandon what he sees as its hostility to the Islamic Republic. After four rounds of talks, Iran and the major powers are due to meet again in New York next month to start writing the final draft of a nuclear deal. The P5+1 suspect the programme is aimed at developing the ability to manufacture a nuclear bomb. Iran says the programme is solely for civilian purposes, such as electricity generation. Kerry: Israel risks becoming apartheid state

US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that Israel risks becoming “an apartheid state” if there is no two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Kerry’s comments were published on Sunday by The Daily Beast news website, which obtained a recording of his remarks on Friday to the Trilateral Commission, a non-governmental

organisation which includes senior officials and experts from the US, Western Europe, Russia and Japan. “A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second class citizens - or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state,” said Kerry. “Once you put that frame in your mind, that reality, which is the bottom line, you understand how imperative it is to get to the two-state solution, which both leaders, even yesterday, said they remain deeply committed to.” The US-based The Daily Beast reported that senior US officials have rarely used the term in reference to Israel. Jen Psaki, the spokesperson for the US State Depart-

ment, said: “Secretary Kerry, like Justice Minister Livni, and previous Israeli Prime Ministers Olmert and Barak, was reiterating why there’s no such thing as a one state solution if you believe, as he does, in the principle of a Jewish State.” “[Kerry] was talking about the kind of future Israel wants and the kind of future both Israelis and Palestinians would want to envision. The only way to have two nations and two peoples living side by side in peace and security is through a two state solution. And without a two state solution, the level of prosperity and security the Israeli and Palestinian people deserve isn’t possible,” she added. Kerry has been conducting more than a year of intensive shuttle diplomacy trying to broker Israeli-Palestinian peace. Earlier

in April, he urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to prevent the negotiations from collapsing, saying it was regrettable that both sides have taken steps recently that are not helpful in promoting peace and ending the decades-long conflict between the two sides. The “crime of apartheid” include “inhumane acts… committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime,” according to the 1998 Rome Statute. Apartheid was institutionalised from 1948 to 1994 in South Africa, and was a means of racial classification and segregation. Source: Al-Jazeera

Dreaming for the Dust to Settle

Beyond doubt, the biased reporting, misreporting or lying is morally and legally wrong. Maybe, the chronic disease of building fake stories is a good business for some, but it infringes the rights of all others who have to suffer because of it. Despite the bitterness, the truth is always beautiful. It simply speaks itself without real effort. In simpler words, one has to remember what was fabricated while the truth remains the same and there is no need to recall the verbatim. Some champions of Pakistani democracy are “a bunch of liars,” they don’t focus on their main task; rather they are obsessively motivated to monopolize power to rule for their own selfish agendas. Since they are involved in violating the constitutional articles including article 6, article 63 and many others by ignoring the best interests of the country, they do contribute in the discomfort of the masses indeed. The fact is democracy is said to be existing when it is of the people, by the people and for the people. Here, the word “people” means people who are in majority, nevertheless, the rich elite always manages to rule the huge majority of general public consisting of the poor masses. Eye brows are raised over the ‘polluted journalism’ which includes bashing, ridiculing and creating hype in the hot pursuit of rewards in cash or kind from the unknown sources. Because of this nonsense, Pakistan is stuck in a cul-de-sac.

Of course, the ongoing dilemma is injurious for an overall health of the country and its inhabitants. Media is a tool for the rich (the powerful elite), while the poor and the oppressed are just the tools to be used in favour of the powerful elite. Among other things, it’s usually noticed that some groups do have a dirty habit of conveniently encouraging media to do biased reporting. According to Malcolm X, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control minds of the masses.” In fact, the media does have the capability to generate public opinion as intended to satisfy the vested interests. But, the problem is the ‘unfriendly attitude’ of the main stream media towards the oppressed public in general. On the other hand, the competition among the media businesses is in a desperate need of giving the truthful information by being objective and balanced in reporting. And the media is always bound by a code of ethics to continue as competitive and credible under all circumstances. A successful journalism has to be conscientious, because presenting the distorted facts is unethical and unlawful. The job of Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) is to monitor to make sure that no TV channel is violating the terms and conditions of the license. If PEMRA in the past had fined

the TV channels found guilty of violating the code of ethics, the ground reality would have been quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ‘never ending cycle’ of “tugs-of-war” between power-players is a bad news and now the eruption of civil-military tussle and the media hype to further the deterioration is something that would inflict too much damage to the country. Obviously, the incompetence of elected representatives to come up with a political answer to the multiplying challenges does get compounded by the substandard TV debates. We still remember executive-judiciary confrontation that topped the media charts for around three years. And the gossips about the Military establishment’s anger with the judiciary and the civil military rift are more than frightening. To figure out is expected to remain complicated for some time unless scoping beneath the surface is carried out to analyze the dilemma. Damage control and fixing the Snags: By the way, a massive education program is to be introduced to eradicate the general illiteracy followed by computer literacy campaign so that people are able to know the difference between right and wrong. • Practising shamanism and idolizing the dead saints as redeemers of human problems has to be banned. • Land reforms are desperately

needed to eliminate the curse of feudalism. Restoration of writ of the State: • All responsible for terrorism have to be crushed brutally. • The terrorists, extortionists, killer gangs, saboteurs and arsonists are making a mockery of the Law enforcement and legal system. They need to be nailed for summary punishments. • The FATA region should be declared as province at par with other provinces of Pakistan. Crushing the separatist movements and insurgency is the absolute necessity, as it is a proxy war to undo Pakistan. Only the Pak Military can finish the job if allowed by the government. Unfortunately, there are similarities between Egypt and Pakistan situation. To conclude: • A stage is being set in Pakistan unless the incompetent regime comes to senses before it’s too late. • The media is divided and judiciary integrity is under attack. The threat of May 11 is fast approaching. The fear is, with the military intervention in the best interest of the country, all democratic gains would vanish once again. The bottom line: If the media focuses on achieving the goal of opinion building based on balanced truthful journalism on merit, no power on the Earth can break the country. Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

Letters & Opinions GEN. MUSHRAF TRAIL By: R.C. PURI While going through the Miracle newspaper April 18, I came across the supra article and thoroughly went through the same with pertinent interest. Although I am an Indian by birth and origin and have no direct concern whatsoever with the politics and judicial system of the country across the Indian borders, yet being an individual of a legal background (as I was in legal practice for over 25 years before my immigration to Canada) I am deeply concerned with the shabby treatment being extended to the former first citizen of Pakistan. Without using the unforgiving words against Pakistan and offending its dignity and sovereignty I must say that I am pained to observe that there appears to be no rule of law in Pakistan, rather the same is overshadowed by personal vendetta against the former General and President. Since all the relevant facts (which are the ground realities) have been related by the author without any prejudice and favor and I believe the same to be accurate on the basis of the veracity and dignity Mr. Nusrat Hussain is holding as a journalist. I earnestly feel that all the steps then taken by General Pervez Musharraf in the

discharge of his statutory obligations as the President of Pakistan were perfectly in order and the person discharging his constitutional duties honestly and to the best of his capacity cannot be charged for the penal offence of high treason even by the figment of imagination. In fortification of this viewpoint I must draw the attention of the readers towards the factum of imposition of emergency (where in also the fundamental constitutional rights of the citizens of India were abrogated) by the then Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi, but she was never dragged to the court of law to face the penal offence of high treason. Then, I wonder how the same stands justified in the Pakistani courts when the legal system in both the countries is almost identical. The solitary plausible reply is that the courts in that country have become the tools of personal vendetta against the former President of Pakistan at the behest of the people in authority. It is very heart throbbing that when no legal and natural justice is available to the person of the dignity of the former President of Pakistan, then what would be the plight of an ordinary man in the matter of availability of justice in that country, which

too is the fundamental constitutional right of every civilized nation. The article in question raises some issues of vital importance that essentially necessitate wide-scale debate. Even the opposite views of the readers shall be warmly solicited by the author and the Miracle team.

There’s still one practical plan for Senate reform By: Scott Simms, MP Liberal Party of Canada Critic for Democratic Reform After a career of railing against the Senate, Prime Minister Stephen Harper now says that we’re “stuck with the status quo”. Canadians don’t have to settle for this defeatism—there is a practical plan left to fix our broken Senate. Mr. Harper was reacting to a unanimous Supreme Court ruling that his proposed reforms would require constitutional amendments approved by at least seven provinces representing 50% of the population. Abolishing it would require the unanimous consent of all ten provinces. Canadians don’t want to open up the constitution for a long, rancorous debate with the provinces that

He has turned the Senate into a hyper-political, hyper-partisan chamber, which he personally stocked with the likes of Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau. Fortunately there is a better way. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has a plan to remove partisanship and patronage from the Senate, and to restore the original purpose of the Fathers of Confederation: a chamber of sober, second thought. Under a Trudeau government, all Senators would be appointed through an open, transparent and non-partisan appointment process. Senators would be selected on quality and good judgment, picking the best of the best from each province. Parties and partisanship would become a thing of the past. No constitutional battles required. To get started, Justin removed all Senators from the Liberal caucus. In one morning, he achieved more Senate reform than Mr. Harper had in his entire career. Real change to the status quo is within reach. We just need the leadership to get it done

F A I T H Narated By Ibn ‘Umar : While Umar bin Al-Khattab was standing and delivering the sermon on a Friday, one of the companions of the Prophet, who was one of the foremost Muhajirs (emigrants) came. ‘Umar said to him, “What is the time now?” He replied, “I was busy and could not go back to my house till I heard the Adhan. I did not perform more than the ablution.” Thereupon ‘Umar said to him, “Did you perform only the ablution although you know that Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) used to order us to take a bath (on Fridays)?” Sahih Bukhari (Volume 002, Book 013,

Illnesses are the tests of this world By Harun Yahya Illnesses are means by which believers can show their passion for and devotion to our Lord. People who believe in God and submit to the destiny created by Him show their contentment with all that comes from Him by not forgetting that all sickness and health comes from God. In this way, by God’s leave, they turn times of sickness into blessings of reward. Illnesses are one of the things that serve to remind people of their weakness. The otherwise well-protected human body can still be severely affected by a virus or microbe too small to be seen with naked eye. At first sight, this weakening of the body might not be what one would expect. God has created the human body with immaculate defense mechanisms. Indeed, the human body’s defense system can be described as a “powerful army.” Yet people still frequently fall ill. Of course, if God, Who installed such superior systems inside the human body so wished, nobody would ever fall ill. Viruses, microbes and bacteria would have no effect on them, or else these specially created tiny “foes” would never have existed in the first place. Yet everyone can contract an illness with such minute causes that give rise to serious consequences. These dangers are not far off and remote; they can easily befall anyone at any time. It is a grave error to assume they are natural events and never think about them. Like all other weaknesses, illness is specially created by God. Human beings, with their tendency to arrogance, can thus see how feeble they truly are. They can also grasp the deficiencies of this world. Illnesses are tests bestowed on Muslims by God so that they can desire Paradise, give thanks for God’s mercy and the blessing of good health, and submit to Him in the knowledge of their own weakness. They always hope for health from God, knowing it is He Who bestows sickness and

health. They remember God at every painful moment and keep their hearts bound to Him. The words of the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) on the subject are revealed as follows in the Qur’an; “When I am ill it is He Who heals me.” (Surat ash-Shu’ara, 80) What is the wisdom behind the creation of disease? Sickness reminds people of their weakness and their need of God. Human beings incapable of preventing the harm a microscopic virus does to their bodies are thus better able to understand their weakness and how much they need God. Sickness makes one appreciate the fact that good health is a great blessing from God. Someone who does not become ill for a long time, and therefore feels no pain or discomfort, becomes used to that state of affairs; but when he is confronted by sickness, he will immediately realize that good health is indeed a great blessing from God. In severe illnesses, people may reflect more on the transitory nature of the world,

ever fall ill or suffer pain but there is much wisdom behind the experiencing of such discomfort in terms of grasping the transitory nature of this world and the infinite might of God. It must not be forgotten that it is most important to sincerely grasp this fact and to be able to behave with virtue in the face of such events. In the face of illness, people reflect on how meaningless their devotion to this world is; they realize that the things they own are temporary and given to them in order to test them. Someone whose life is threatened by a single microbe inside his body and is quite unable to fight that microbe off will grasp his helplessness, and realize that it is God Who created him and protects him from dangers. No matter how great someone may imagine himself to be, he is unable to do anything to benefit himself or to protect himself from harm unless God so wishes. If God so wishes, He will send sickness, and if He so wishes, He creates weaknesses in the human body to remind people of their helplessness. As said earlier, this world is a place of testing created by God. Everyone has a responsibility to perform good deeds that will please Him and is tested accordingly. At the end of the test, those who abide by God’s commandments and prohibitions will earn the right to live in Paradise for all time, but those who insist on being arrogant and prefer the few decades of this world to the eternal life of the hereafter will be unable to escape the deficiencies, troubles and weaknesses in this world and in the hereafter.

and on death and the hereafter. Some people who contract a life-threatening disease or who lose the use of their limbs may regard this as an unwelcome development yet that disease may have been bestowed on them, not as a source of trouble, but as a means whereby they can attain salvation in the hereafter and turn to God alone: One prays more and draws closer to God in times of sickness. As the symptoms of a severe illness begin increasing in the body, one may begin reflecting on death, which one has perhaps never much thought of before, and thus wish to be restored to health by praying to God with all one’s heart. Someone who never fully submitted to God before falling ill may acquire that virtue through sickness and may hope to attain the eternal blessings of Paradise in the face of brief Names discomfort The Miracle repeats its series of in the life of of Allah (SWT) &Prophet Mohammad (saw) this world. 102K raised for IQRA School With the blessings of Allah (SWT) and hard work of the local Muslim community, Muslim parents in the Lower Mainland have the opportunity to send their children to an Islamic school where they can be educated about their religious beliefs alongside worldly education. On April 26, Iqra Islamic School presented a plan to the community members in a fundraising dinner at Bombay Banquet Hall in Surrey. Iqra is an elementary & junior high School (accredited by the Ministry of Education; BC) and serves more than 400 students. The event was conducted by a Gr. 8 student with the opening remarks Sr. Ruba Knifati. The program began with beautiful recitation of Sura Al Baqarah by Fadhlullah Muhammad and Aykut Pakzat (Gr. 6) did the English translation. The children presentation program was conducted by Mah Noor Janjua and Nabiha Rehan. Performance by students from many grades reflected a very high standard of Arabic and Islamic program at the school. The sequences of presentation were as fallows: Gr4, 5& 6 “ students presented Nasheed, KG Div. 1-2 ‘’Quran, Sura Al-Ikhlas & Nasheed’’ Gr1 Div 1-2 ‘’Poem, Recycle, Reuse and Reduce’’ Gr3 Div 1-2 “Nasheed Al Khaliq” Gr2 Div 1 “Poem Generosity” Gr2 Div 2-3 “Performance, Multiplication Rap”

Gr8 “Speech-Purpose of Life” Gr7 Div 1-2 “Performance - The Generosity of the Companion of the Prophet Mohammad(pbuh)” An excellent important and informative skit presented by the Grade seven students in which they highlighted Prophet(saw) Companions generosity to spread Islam and service to the community. After the students’ beautiful presentations, Dr. Faisal Ali, the Principal of the school, welcomed all the attendees and read the Iqra School over all progress and standing within the province, based on the FSA results. He said that in 2008 the Iqra school was ranked among the 500 mark and within six years it has now reached number ONE in BC Province. He also mentioned that Iqra school students also received Silver and Bronze medals in Regional Science Fair on April 10-11, 2014. Mr. Faisal outlined school’s mission and objective and that the Primary objective at Iqra is the cultivation of Muslim character. He also thanked parents, students, guests and staff for their ongoing support. The acting Chair of the Iqra school board Br. Sultan Badshah updated everyone about the school projects. Alhamdulillah Iqra has 407 students and 41staff members and the all up-to-date facilities . Br. Jamal Abdulwahid operations Manger assisted Br. Badshah to provide all details about Iqra school updated progress. Surrey North-Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston is always invited of each school

The PAC chairperson Sr. Zebun Malik highlighted the current progress of school. The keynote speaker was Sheikh Alaa El-Sayed, the current Director of Religious Affairs for the Islamic Centre of Canada, of the Islamic Society of North America (ICC-ISNA). Sheikh Alaa delivered a beautiful speech in the light of Quran and Sunnah and encouraged all the attendees to open their hearts and donate generously for this noble educational cause. Sheikh Alaa used his special skills and helped to raise $102,000 towards completion of school projects, in particular the replacement of roof of the old school building. Sheikh made Duaa for the school and the fundraiser and all those contributing towards the project. The attendance of parents was reasonable and their generous donations were made. Zikar o Milad-e-Mustafa (saw) Celebrated at Naqashbandi Centre On April 19, a beautiful gathering for Zikr Allah Subhan o Tahla, Darood o Salam and Milad e Mustafa(saw)took place in the presence of Sheikh Ahl-e-sunnat wal Jamat Sayed Nurjan in Naqashbandi Sufi centre(Rumi Rose Garden) in Vancouver. Many participants presented Hadiya-e- Hamad o Naats. A number of youth and families attended this spiritual evening. In this centre Zikr, Darood o Salam and Seerat un Nabi(saw) is narrated every Thursday, Friday and Saturday after Maghrib prayer. At this Milad e Mustafa (saw) after the recitation of Quran, Syed Noor Jan explained the Sura - Alaq chapter 96. 1. “Read (Proclaim!) In the Name of your Lord Who created” 2. “Created man, out of a clot (of congealed blood).” 3. “Read (Proclaim), and your Lord is the Most Generous,” 4. “Who taught by the Pen,” 5. “Taught man that which he knew not.” It is commonly known among the commentators that this Surah is the first Surah that was revealed to the holy Prophet (S) of Islam. First, this Surah addresses the holy Prophet (S) and commands him to read or proclaim (the Message). Then, it refers to the creation of Man out of a mere clot. Further, it refers to the development of Man, who is taught from the bounty and by the Grace of Allah; the soul in him reaching out to knowledge sublime, and the instrument of it, the sanctified

Pen. Thereafter, it speaks about ungrateful Man, and that despite all the blessings and graciousness that Allah bestows on him, he rebels. Sheikh talked about how much Allah (swt) loves His beloved Mohammad(saw). He reminded that we should be a practising Muslim in our daily life, and spend our lives in the path of Allah(swt). Syed Nurjan’s main focus was real love with Allah(swt), and he said that everyone should accept Allah by heart as a supreme power of creation and helping each other by being respectful and loving to everyone. He also talked about the Holy birth of Hzt. Fatima Al Zahra beloved daughter of Prophet Mohammad(saw) and made Duaa for Bibi Fatima Al Zahra and also Duaa for holy birth of Sultan Ul Aoliya Maulana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil Al Haqani. We should all try to pray five times a day and recite Darood many times a day and it will help get mercy. The evening ended with Darood o Salam, with Du’a.”May Allah Subhana wa Taala reward all those who took part in the event for Zikar o Milad e Mustafa (saw) and give them success in this life and the hereafter (Ameen). At this event Mo-e-Mubarak ( Prophet’s Hair) was shown. A variety of delicious food dishes were prepared and served by volunteers and cake was distributed.

Watts BC mayor cuts the ribbon at the grand opening celebration of the new Surrey City Hall

“The new City Hall is an iconic piece of architecture that has been purpose-built to serve the community,” says City of Surrey Mayor, Dianne Watts. “It is a City Hall that residents can be proud of, and it represents a milestone in Surrey’s transformation into the region’s next great metropolitan centre.” In opening ceremony a number of Mayors, MLA, MP, city councillors and many other dignitaries were present. The construction of City Hall has been a catalyst for investment into the area and is part of a larger vision to transform Surrey’s City Centre into an economic, social and cultural hub; since the announcement of building a new City Hall in City Centre, the private sector has attracted more than $3-billion in current and future investment in the area. The new city hall in the heart of Whalley cost of $97 million. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts made her decision, which she called “the worst-kept secret,” public Saturday at the official opening of the new Surrey City Hall, during the annual Party for the Planet celebrations. She confirmed she will not be running for a fourth term as mayor in November’s municipal election. “I made a commitment a number of years ago that I would do three terms, and three terms are up in November, so I think it’s an opportune time to move on and close this chapter of my life and see what the next one brings. “I feel great, I feel excited that this chapter in my life is coming to a conclusion. I don’t know what’s around the corner. That gives me an element of excitement,” she

said, smiling broadly.“My heart and my passion has been for this city.” Her achievements over the past nine years have included introducing a crime reduction strategy, an economic investment plan and the sixyear Build Surrey program, which focuses on developing the downtown core and five other city centres. Watts did not specify what her plans are for post-mayoral life-she said she would take some time off and examine her options-however, there is speculation she will run for the federal Conservatives in the 2015 election. The riding where Watts lives, South SurreyWhite Rock-Cloverdale, will be up for grabs now that MP Russ Hiebert has decided not to run. Who is eyeing the mayor’s chair in Surrey? With Mayor Dianne Watts announcing she won’t seek re-election this fall, speculation about who will run for the top spot is swirling. Surrey First councillors Hepner, Bruce Hayne and Tom Gill have all expressed interest in the seat, though none have come out publicly confirming their intentions. “Mayor Watts has been a strong voice for Surrey. If she decides to put her name forward in the federal arena, it would be good for Surrey,” Rasode said.Coun. Linda Hepner wouldn’t say whether she would be running for mayor. She said the Surrey First team will be in discussions over the next few weeks about strategy and candidates, including who will lead the charge, but added the group is “fairly close to a decision.” Coun. Tom Gill said there’s “no ques-

tion” that he’s been interested in running for mayor over the last number of months. But he is having some reservations, including the time commitment, his young family and his desire to still continue in his professional career as an accountant. And independent Coun. Barinder Rasode has said she would “strongly consider” running for mayor if Watts didn’t. Last week, Rasode left Surrey First to sit as an independent on council. She claimed the more questions she asked of council, the more “hostile” the relationship had become. And there’s been speculation that McCallum may be jumping back into Surrey’s political arena after he came out with strong words about the dollars spent on the glitzy new city hall and criticisms of the Surrey City Development Corporation. So far, the only mayoral candidate to confirm plans to run this fall is Vikram Bajwa, who ran for mayor in the 2011 election, garnering 4,481 votes – six per cent of the total count. “The race for the mayor’s chair appears to be wide open.... Councillor Barinder Rasode enjoys the strongest level of high familiarity over Linda Hepner, Tom Gill and Bruce Hayne,”

Mother’s Day (May 11): Islamic Prespective

Mother’s Day in Canada is observed each year on the second Sunday in May. It is not an official public or statutory holiday. Canadians have family reunions on this day to honour their mothers and celebrate motherhood. Canadians also celebrate Father’s Day. The date of Father’s Day in Canada is on the third Sunday in June. Yet, the Mother’s Day, as it’s known nowadays is a Western habit. The Westerners specified a day and called it the Mother’s Day. On that day sons and daughters show gratefulness to their mothers and offer them presents. It has become part of important feasts in the West, whereas we Muslims have no other festivals except the Lesser and the Greater Bairams. Any other celebrations are deemed mere occasions or anniversaries; and this is applied to the Mother’s Day. The Mother’s Day implies paying more attention and exerting more effort in expressing gratitude to mothers. So there is nothing wrong

in that. However, there are two reservations worth mentioning; first, considering the Mother’s Day a feast; second, confining the task of showing dutifulness to mothers to that specific day, giving implication that throughout the whole year, just only one day is for showing love to parents. If such two anomalous points are addressed, then there is nothing wrong in considering the Mother’s Day a chance to give more care to mothers. Thus, we may take the Mother’s Day as a chance to lay more emphasis on our duty towards our mothers, as Islam enjoins us, because dutifulness to parents is a genuine Islamic teaching. But Muslims, in doing that, should never deviate from the Islamic teachings, they should do things in Islamic manners, not in Western manners. Hence, they would not be imitating the non-Islamic habits of the West. Hence, viewed in juristic perspective, we can say that celebrating

the Mother’s day is controversial among the contemporary scholars. While a group of them consider it haram (unlawful) as a kind of blind imitation of the Western nonIslamic habits, which have no benefit for Muslims, another group see it halal(lawful) on condition that showing gratitude and dutifulness to parents should not be confined to that day only. Moreover, the well known erudite scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi states: The Arab tend to blindly follow the Western in their celebration of the Mother’s Day, without trying to understand the wisdom behind inventing such an occasion. When the European found that children do not deal properly towards their parents nor give them their due right, they resorted to specifying an annual occasion for children to remedy the situation. But in Islam, mothers are to be given due respect and love every time, not only one day a year. For example,

My Mother: A life fully lived

By: Masood Aslam Lilla (Surrey) My mother Fatima Beghum(82 yrs) left this mortal world in June 2013 at Lahore Pakistan. Her life was full of struggle,. she would win her struggle against poverty, illiteracy, male chauvinism and finally against chronic disease of liver cirrhosis. She borne to a small farmer Ch. Noor Muhammad Lilla in a remote village Lilla town (Jhelum), she was destined to have exposure of many big cities of Pakistan and the world over including Vancouver. There was hardly any facility of education for the girls in her village at that time and also it was not a tradition to send the girls to school. So like other girls of her time she was only exposed to the oral reading of the Holy Quran and never had an opportunity to see the school. One cannot say with authority that whether it was her feelings of being deprived of the formal education or her worldly wisdom otherwise, she made sure that all of her children, not less than eight, obtained a Masters degree from the university in different subjects. The passion for education for her children was so deep routed in her personality that at various stations she stayed back with her children, for the completion of their school year when her husband was transferred to some new city. For the exigencies of the job of her husband, her children were exposed to eight -ten schools to complete their school education. She made sure that the frequent shifting did not affect the educational part of her children. When her elder children reached the university level

of education and were forced to live in the hostels at Lahore, she shifted to Lahore from Sargodha along with her younger children to look after the elder ones in an appropriate manner. The move was not without dividends; all her children got a university degree. Two of her sons later made their way to the civil services of Pakistan. Aware of the importance of education, she encouraged her daughters to choose this field as a career and resulted two of her daughters are known educationalists. My mother was bestowed by nature the role of a mother at a very early age of her life. To the prophetic tradition she lost her mother at a very young age and was not only to look after herself, but to raise her younger siblings as well. In search of a better lively food, her father shifted from Lilla Town to Gagoo Mandi,(Sahiwal). The odds of new environment, the hazards of beginning a new life and economic hardships provided numerous challenges for her which she faced very bravely. She would feel happy by the name earned by the family and good settlement of her brothers in the life, but would regret the insufficient education for her brothers. The compensation came when she would fulfill her desire of imparting education among her children as mentioned earlier. The earlier years of her married life were no easy; a demanding husband, school going children, limited earnings and new social environment of cities like Karachi, Rawalpindi and Peshawar, but she was made to overcome the hazards of

when one goes out, he kisses one’s mother’s hand seeking her pleasure and blessing. A Muslim must not allow any gap between him and his mother, he must offer her presents every time. This indicates that Muslims can dispense with such an occasion, the Mother’s Day. Unlike the case in the West, where it’s a vogue for some children to show indifference to their mothers’ feelings, and, what’s more, it is so common to see some parents being dragged to infirmaries (as their kids have no time for them), dutifulness to parents in Islam, alongside with worshipping Allah, is a sacred duty. In this concern, Almighty Allah says: (And We have commended unto man kindness toward parents. His mother beareth him with reluctance, and bringeth him forth with reluctance, and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months, till, when he attaineth full strength and reacheth forty years, he saith: My Lord! Arouse me that

the life. When she finally said goodbye, all her children are married, well settled, and are living a prosperous life. Her last win proved to be against her long suffered disease of liver cirrhosis. She was diagnosed having this ailment since 18 years. The doctor would think that with this condition of the liver she could survive a maximum for 5-10 years but she survived after the diagnosis. Even in the recent ones when her doctors were expecting a sharp deterioration in her general condition due to mal functioning of the liver, she was fully involved in her daily activities. She undertook a regular walk even a day before her death and left very peacefully due to a cardiac arrest defeating her ailment of liver as she had not learned to surrender. Her peaceful departure left the doctors wondering who were planning to manage her in the bad days to come, which never came. Blessed with a unique wisdom and a strong sixth sense she would insist of her life to present her gold bangle to her granddaughter whose birthday was to follow on Thursday. When someone told her that the birthday is few days away she insisted very strongly that the present is to be given at that very moment, as she would know that she will pass away on

I may give thanks for the favor wherewith Thou hast favored me and my parents, and that I may do right acceptable unto Thee. And be gracious unto me In the matter of my seed. Lo! I have turned unto Thee repentant, and lo! I am of those who surrender (unto Thee).) (Al-Ahqaf 46: 15) Reflecting on the aforementioned Qur’anic verse, we find it stressing both parents’ right, but reviewing the following verses we find them paying special care to the mother and tackling the hardships she suffers in pregnancy, fosterage and rearing children. In this verse, Almighty Allah informs man of the debt he owes his mother since he was a fetus, passing by the process of childbirth, infancy, childhood until he comes of age. A child normally forgets the hardship which his mother underwent during pregnancy. Hence Almighty Allah draws his attention to such hardships, laying emphasis on her great status in Islam.

Wednesday. She was lucky to the core when she had the holy water of Zam Zam as her last drink and recited the Kalma Tayyaba as her last words few moments before her death. She breathed her last breath in the lap of her daughter Ghazala and daughter in law Afshan while taking a last deep departing look at her son (Masood Lilla). She herself desired to be buried after death at Lahore instead of her ancestral village breaking a family tradition. She has a strong desire to live with her children and knowing that most of them live at Lahore, she would not like to be away from them even after her death. She’s no more with us, but will always be with us in our memories, thoughts and in our hearts. Apart from her children, she is also survived by her love, care, thoughtfulness and up keeping of the universal human values. May God bless her with eternal peace and happiness (Ameen).

The UniqueYou!

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor You are one of a kind. You are lucky enough to have something that makes you different from everyone else so take pride in embracing your individuality. Self-worth comes from one thing: thinking that you are worthy. So appreciate what it feels like underneath your own skin. You are amazing just the way you are. Too many days are wasted comparing ourselves to others and wishing to be someone or something we aren’t. Every one of us has our own strengths and weaknesses, and it is only when you accept everything you are, and aren’t, that you will truly find the happiness and fulfillment you seek. Life isn’t about a single moment of great triumph and attainment. It’s about the trials and errors that get you there – the small, inconsequential things you do every day. It all matters in the end – every step, every regret, every decision and every affliction. All of this has strengthened you and led you to every success you’ve ever had. All of this has made you who you are today. Failure and struggles keep you humble, success and achievement keep you glowing, but only faith and determination keeps you going. So stay focused, and celebrate

your efforts too, not just your outcomes. Remember that the opposite of failing is not succeeding; the opposite of failing is trying. Your daily efforts are what makes it all possible. Appreciate what they teach you, even when they don’t lead you to an ideal outcome. In between all your goals, priorities, obligations, and everything else that might appear on one of your upcoming to-do lists, there are moments called “life” that still have to be lived and enjoyed. The trick is to make the very best of now, and value it for what it’s worth. In other words, don’t wish all your time away by waiting for better times ahead. Smile, right now, because you can. If you feel stressed and stuck, let go, take a deep breath and appreciate the fact that this moment is a new beginning. Stop thinking about what might have been and starting looking at what can be. Right now is a perfect time to start over. This moment is a brand new opportunity to rebuild what you truly want. Never underestimate the gift of your health. It’s the greatest wealth you will ever own. It’s the foundation for every chance at happiness and success life has to offer. Your body is the only place you will truly ever live! We all have a whole lot to be grateful for. So at the end of the day before you close your eyes, smile and be happy with where you’ve been and grateful for what you have experienced and overcome. Challenges are what make life interesting; working to overcome them is what gives life meaning. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Getting In Touch with Your True Self

By Don Neviaser The human mind is a very creative force and throughout history, this ability to conceive new perspectives and concepts allowed us to come a long way in a relatively short period of time. Learning to devise better and more efficient ways of utilizing resources, along with a concept of future existence, gave us the ability to improve the quality and longevity of life by planning ahead; which gave us even more time to conceptualize and explore our environment. However, this ability to think beyond given parameters can also give rise to thoughts and impressions of a not so beneficial nature. When infused with insecurity, irrationality, assumptions, limited experience and the emotional onus of past experiences, our perceptions can be unfairly weighted with bias or negativity and erroneously skew the view of ourselves, others and life itself. Such creatively enhanced perspectives are further exacerbated by the inyour-face interactive social environment that exists today as the subsequent attitudes can be more quickly acted out; unnecessarily impacting or diminishing the quality of life for many. The tenacity of such concepts and issues is further assured by the fact that simply being aware of, much less having to work through, a myriad of biased perceptual disparities can, for many people, be at least elusive and at most an invisible impediment to enjoying life. Granted, there are many situations, interactions, perceptions and outcomes in life beyond one’s control, including the thoughts and actions of others, and it is normal to want to minimize guesswork in how we interpret it all. The precept of sanity alone, or at least the appearance of it, drives most of us to attempt a consistent and somewhat predictable comprehension of our surroundings—that along with not wanting to appear wishy washy too, of course. The point is, we are all capable of much more than snap decisions and our immediate reactions to them! Ironically, this natural inclination to judge quickly and hold onto perceived realities in an attempt to minimize indecision and uncertainty can also minimize how we see ourselves, our capabilities and our potential; inadvertently limiting or diminishing many of our own life experiences. However, uncontrollable variables aside, our daily notions, attitudes, actions and reactions to life, and to ourselves and others, are not purely random, nor are we mere victims of

what our mind may or may not conceive and then force upon us, though I’m sure there are those who would disagree. We all have the ability to daily affect and exert critical control over our perceptions, actions, reactions and experiences in life! The process of creating and believing conceptual consistencies representative of who one really is, and living a happier, more fulfilling life, requires both desire and dedication. And the extent to which we explore and realize our inner most desires and untapped potential, lies in a combination of personal choice, overall perspective, desire, imagination, ongoing effort and will power. Fortunately, if you do want a happier, more productive outlook on life, while living a more enriching life in-line with your True Self, you just happen to have a very powerful tool at your disposal; that’s right, the aforementioned creativity of the human mind wrapped in one of the finest machines ever created by nature, the human brain. This gift, when used properly, allows you to think beyond emotional and intellectual boundaries and status quos; it also gives us all the ability to replace dubious perceptions and attitudes with more constructive, optimistic ones. We all have within us the capability of improving our self-image and elevating our view of the world and our place in it. So, when are you going to begin treating yourself more fairly?! In order for such deep seated changes to occur you must be honestly open to alternate perspectives of yourself and others that are more positive and in line with how you want to think, feel and act. You must also be willing and able to implement and solidify these perceptual variations with congruent and consistent attitudes and actions, while maintaining a clear view of the desired end result. We are all capable of growing, changing and positively affecting our hearts, minds and perspectives on a daily basis! And every day is both a time of choice and new opportunity! Ready? Set? GO!! Author’s Bio: Don Neviaser is a Certified Life Coach and author, utilizing both careers helping people move beyond restrictive mindsets and debilitating self-perceptions to a place of inner unity, appreciation and gratitude for who they are and what they are capable of; all in line with who they really are; their True Self!

HEALTH

Illnesses are the tests of this world

By Harun Yahya Illnesses are means by which believers can show their passion for and devotion to our Lord. Illnesses are tests bestowed on Muslims by

God so that they can desire Paradise, give thanks for God’s mercy and the blessing of good health, and submit to Him in the knowledge of their own weakness. They always hope for health from God, knowing it is He Who bestows sickness and health. In severe illnesses, people may reflect more on the transitory nature of the world, and on death and the hereafter. Some people who contract a life-threatening disease or who lose the use of their limbs may regard this as an unwelcome development yet that disease may have been bestowed on them, not as a source of trouble, but as a means whereby they can attain salvation in the hereafter and turn to God alone: One prays more and draws closer to God in times of

sickness. As the symptoms of a severe illness begin increasing in the body, one may begin reflecting on death, which one has perhaps never much thought of before, and thus wish to be restored to health by praying to God with all one’s heart. Someone who never fully submitted to God before falling ill may acquire that virtue through sickness and may hope to attain the eternal blessings of Paradise in the face of brief discomfort in the life of this world. If God so wished, nobody would ever fall ill or suffer pain but there is much wisdom behind the experiencing of such discomfort in terms of grasping the transitory nature of this world and the infinite might of God. It must not be forgotten that it is most important to sincerely grasp this fact and to be able to behave with virtue in the face of such events. In the face of illness, people reflect on how meaningless their devotion to this world is; they realize that the things they own are temporary and given to them in order to test them. Someone whose life is threat-

ened by a single microbe inside his body and is quite unable to fight that microbe off will grasp his helplessness, and realize that it is God Who created him and protects him from dangers.

“Keep Our City Clean” An efforts done by ICNA Canada

On April 20, the Community members gathered to clean Newton Athletic Park at the start of spring 2014. ICNA Canada started to organize clean-up events in Surrey four year ago with collaboration of city of Surrey. Alamdulilah

brothers and sisters gather every year and volunteer time for community. Events like this organized by Muslim community group sends a positive message to main stream community. It

shows that we care, and we want to give back. Last year city of Surrey featured our cleanup event in the city’s newsletter. May Allah accept the efforts of brothers and sisters.. (aameen)

Parents’ Respect By: Sana Desai An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched on their window. The Father asked his Son, “What is this?” The Son replied “It is a crow”. After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, “What is this?” The Son said “Father, I have just now told you “It’s a crow”. After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?” At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the Son’s tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. “It’s a crow, a crow”. A little after, the Father again asked his Son t he 4th time, “What is this?” This time the Son shouted at his Father, “Why do

you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?” A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary :“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. I did not at

all feel irritated, I rather felt affection for my innocent child”. While the little child asked him 23 times “What is this”, the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son

felt irritated and annoyed. So... If your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and kind to them. Be considerate to your parents. From today say this aloud, “I want to see my parents happy forever. They have cared for me ever since I was a little child. They have always showered their selfless love on me. They crossed all mountains and valleys without seeing the storm and heat to make me a person presentable in the society today”. Say a prayer to God, “I will serve my old parents in the BEST way. I will say all good and kind words to my dear parents, no matter how they behave.

Donald Sterling banned for life by NBA, fined $2.5 million

It was a crisis that struck at the very heart of the NBA, a rogue owner spouting racist views that ran counter to the league’s inclusive nature and threatened to cripple the sport at its very core. And commissioner Adam Silver hammered Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterlingwith unprecedented penalties that were universally lauded. Facing the most difficult issue since he replaced David Stern in February as the head of a multibillion-dollar enterprise, Silver struck strongly and decisively against Sterling, banning him for life from having any contact with or say in the operation of the franchise, fining him the maximum allowable ($2.5 million) and setting in motion the process of forcing Sterling to sell the team. The money from the fine will be donated to organizations dedicated to anti-discrimination and tolerance efforts. Those groups will be chosen after consultation with the players’ association. It would take a vote of threequarters of the other 29 owners to force the sale, a process that will begin immediately. “I spoke to several owners and I have their full support,” Silver said. “I fully expect to get the support I need from the other NBA owners to

remove him.” An audio recording of Sterling espousing racist views leaked out on several websites over the weekend and created a maelstrom of protest. Companies fled sponsorship deals with the Clippers, players considered boycotting games, even U.S. president Barack Obama weighed on the issue. It was the blackest mark on the league in its history and Silver had to act quickly and decisively. “This has been a painful moment for all members of the NBA family,” Silver said. “I appreciate the support and understanding of our players during this process, and I am particularly grateful for the leadership shown by (Clippers) coach Doc Rivers, union president Chris Paul and Mayor Kevin Johnson (a former NBA all-star) of Sacramento, who has been acting as the players’ representative in this matter. We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views. They simply have no place in the NBA.” Maple Leaf Sports, and more important the Raptors’ players, were among those weighing in with support for Silver’s ruling. The organization said Sterling’s comments “have no place in our society or our sport” and the players are considering some show of solidarity with the

Clippers, who shed their team warm-up jackets and wore their shooting shirts inside out in a Sunday game as a protest. “It’s a fraternity. We all support each other,” said Toronto guard Kyle Lowry. “That’s what makes the NBA and professional sports so special.” “On the floor we’re enemies, but off the floor we’re all brothers.” That was the overwhelming reaction to Silver’s punishment. In the closed-knit world of the NBA, which is the most inclusive pro sports organization when it comes to minorities in positions of authority up and down the power structure of the league, opposition to Sterling’s views was universal. “We’re all so fortunate to be part of a game that transcends these kinds of misguided ignorances,” said Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle. “The beauty and ideals of our game will long outlive these kinds of things that should not happen.” Silver said he only told the Clippers of the punishment moments before he made it public, and that in conversations with Sterling since the story first broke the owner’s reaction did not include any level of contrition. “Mr. Sterling acknowledged it was his voice on the tape, and he has not expressed to me directly

any other views,” the commissioner said. Silver’s ruling, and outcry that Sterling’s disgusting remarks provoked, will be the litmus test in the future. Steve Nash, long an advocate for social issues, thanked Silver for “a quick, unequivocal and concise decision made today on behalf of everyone involved in this situation” but also issued a warning. “It begs the bigger question: If racism is a learned behaviour, how long will it go on for?” he told The Canadian Press. “How long will people be taught to be bigoted, to discriminate and to instil hatred in our communities? “Let’s hope this is an opportunity for all of us . . . to help educate and take one step further to eradicating racism in our communities.” Source: The Star

In an unusually blunt public warning, a vicepresident of the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday called the delayed preparations for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro “the worst I have experienced.” John Coates, who has made six trips to Brazil as part of the IOC’s co-ordination commission for Rio, said the Brazilians are behind “in many, many ways” and are in worse shape than Greek organizers were in preparing for the 2004 Olympics. Despite the critical delays, the Australian said there is no backup plan and the games will take place in Rio. Coates noted that the IOC had taken the unprecedented step of embedding experts in the host city to help the local organizing committee deliver the games. “The IOC has formed a special task force to try

and speed up preparations but the situation is critical on the ground,” Coates told an Olympic forum in Sydney, outlining that construction delays are just part of the problem. “The IOC has adopted a more hands-on role. It is unprecedented for the IOC, but there is no plan B. We are going to Rio.” Brazil has also come under fire from football’s world governing body, FIFA, for long delays in construction of stadiums and other infrastructure and the overdue delivery of venues for the World Cup, which kicks off in June. Two years out from the 2016 Olympics, the situation on the construction front is just as bleak. “We have become very concerned. They are not ready in many, many ways,” Coates said. “And this is against a city that’s got social issues that also

have to be addressed; a country that’s also trying to deal with the FIFA World Cup coming up in a few months.” Coates said dealing with three levels of government in Brazil made it harder for local organizers than it was for the heavily criticized organizers of the Athens Games, which were also plagued by construction delays and earned a “yellow light” warning from then-IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. “I think this is a worse situation than Athens,” Coates said. “In Athens, we were dealing with one government and some city responsibilities. Here, there’s three. “There is bureaucracy, there is little coordination between the federal, the state government and the city -- which is responsible for a lot of the construction. The flow of funds from

the federal government is not happening quickly enough. We think we need to help facilitate that.” Coates, who chairs the IOC co-ordination commission for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, said he thinks the IOC has put the message across in Brazil. “We have to make it (the Olympics) happen and that is the IOC approach, you can’t walk away from this,” he said. “If it comes off -- the first (Olympic) Games on the South American continent, in a magical city in so many ways -it’ll be a wonderful experience for the athletes.” Work hasn’t begun at Deodoro, a complex for eight Olympics sports venues, and the course that will host golf’s return to the Olympic program for the first time in more than a century doesn’t have grass yet.
