Meeting with Imran: No decision from JI on joining ‘Azadi’ March

Amidst the heated ppolitical climate in the days running up to Imran Khan’s August 14 long march, opposition party leaders on Wednesday apppealed to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to reduce friction and try to come to an agreement. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with PTI chairman Imran Khan, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq affirmed his support to the PTI’s stance on electoral reforms, but stopped short of saying whether or not his party would join the PTI in the ‘Azadi’ march. “We support Imran Khan’s demand for the electoral system to be made transparent. We also support his demand that complaints of elections candidates be addressed,” he said. “All political leaders that we are in contact with want to avoid a clash and that the issue to be resolved smoothly. But we want to make it clear that the entire responsibility rests on the shoulders of the federal government.” But when asked by a reporter whether he had decided on Imran’s invitation to join the PTI on Aug 14, he said: “We have a very large program in Islamabad in solidarity with Gaza on Aug 10, and then a ‘million’ march in Karachi. We will decide on the (PTI’s) long march after Aug 10. Right now, we are in contact with all political parties to reach a solution.” Earlier in a joint press conference held after a meeting

between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) member Khursheed We specialize in Pakistan, India, Middle East, Fiji, Europe Shah and the JI chief, both leaders said they want to play a We do Hajj, Umrah packages, role in lowering the temperatures that have developed over Cruises and Disney Land tours etc. the past few weeks into the current situation. “We are in agreement that the constitution and democracy should remain intact,” Leader of the Opposition in the Na- galaxytravel@live.ca | www.galaxytravel.ca Abdul Rauf (President) tional Assembly Khursheed Shah said. The PPP leader said he is in contact with members of the government and will also contact Imran Khan to encourage a dialogue between the two sides. “Secretary General JI Liaquat Baloch and Sirajul Haq will talk to Imran today. We will also contact other political parties to alleviate the situation,” he said. Siraj said the meeting discussed both Imran’s proposed August 14 march as well as the government’s attitude around it. “We plan to meet Imran Khan to discuss the situation,” he added. He also said that resignations will not resolve any issue and that tension between these political parties will only benefit a “third party”. “Protests and rallies are the right of every political party. We are grateful that there is democracy in the country and every citizen enjoys this freedom,” Siraj said.“But politics is volatile. A middle ground should be reached to resolve issues. We are meeting so the strain between the PTI and government can be eased.” Siraj also said that in a telephone call, former president and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari had said that a situation which may bring an end to the democratic process should be avoided. “Imran Khan has also said that he doesn’t want to derail democracy. But the situation has given way to a bottleneck. In this situation, it is the responsibility of political leaders to find a solution.”In response to a question, Shah said Zardari Now is concerned about the sustenan. Source: The Dawn Moved at

Five militants, most of them foreigners, were killed in a drone strike in North Waziristan’s Dattakhel area, intelligence sources said. The sources said the identity of the militants could not be ascertained, adding that most of those killed were foreigners. Two militants

were also injured when the drone fired two missiles on a compound in Dattakhel. This is the fourth such drone strike since the Pakistani military launched Operation Zarb-i-Azb in the militancy-infested lawless region to wipe out longstanding bases of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups. The semi-autonomous tribal area on the Afghan border has for years been a hideout for several militant groups – including Al Qaeda and the TTP as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs. Pakistan routinely protests against US drone strikes, saying they violate the country’s sovereignty and are counterproductive in the fight against terror. The US had suspended drone strikes for around six months when Pakistan was pursuing peace talks with the TTP but resumed the attacks in June after the talks failed. Variations in the national flag on rise

With the start of month of August, stalls can be seen set up in every nook and corner of the twin cities, showing the love and patriotism for the country to mark the Independence Day in a befitting manner. The sale and purchase of the national flag, in all sizes and shapes is gaining momentum with every passing day but at the same time the trend of the variations in making and printing of the flags is not less than a surprise where different techniques have surprised the nationalists. Flags with pictures of the national leaders, missiles, and even printing of different cartoon characters are available in the markets and the people are buying them without knowing what message is being conveyed through these variations. Around the world, no one can see such mockery of the national flag, whereas the practice is being followed for the last few years and no one has taken any

notice, giving a free hand to those printing anything on the flags at one’s own will. People, especially the youngsters love to hoist flags on their vehicles. The lack of knowledge and awareness about the national flag is at its peak, as most of us do not know the history of our flag and its importance, and that is the reason that the printers are printing the flags with different green color shades, with their own choice. Having a look at our history, it was revealed that the national flag of Pakistan was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947, three days before the country’s independence, when it became the official flag of Pakistan. The flag is a green field with a white crescent moon and fiverayed star at its centre, and a vertical white stripe at the hoist side. Though the green color is mandated only as ‘dark green’, its official and most consistent representation is Pakistan green, which is shaded distinctively darker. The green color represents Islam and the majority Muslims in Pakistan and the white stripe represents the minorities. In the centre, the crescent and the star symbolises progress and light respectively. It is based on the original flag of the Muslim League, which itself drew inspiration from the flag of the Sultanate of Delhi and the flag of the Mughal Empire. According to the specifications, it is a dark green rectangular flag in the proportion of length and width as 3:2, with a white vertical bar at the mast, the green portion bearing a white crescent in the centre and a five-pointed white heraldic stars. The width of the white portion is one quarter the width of the flag, nearest the mast, so the green portion occupies the remaining three quarters.

UK cabinet minister quits over G az a policy

A British cabinet minister has quit over the government’s policy on Gaza. Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, who is of Pakistani origin, announced her resignation on Twitter, saying: “With deep regret, I have this morning written to the Prime Minister and tendered my resignation. I can no longer support the Govt policy on #Gaza.” She later posted the full letter of resignation to the social networking site. “My view has been that our policy in relation to the Middle East Peace Process generally, but more recently our approach and language during the current crisis in Gaza is morally indefensible,” the

letter said. Baroness Warsi, who is Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Minister for Faith and Communities, was the first Muslim woman to serve in the British cabinet. David Cameron, the British prime minister, has come under increasing pressure for his policy on Gaza. On July 10, the third day of the offensive, Cameron “strongly condemned the appalling attacks being carried out by Hamas against Israeli civilians...and underlined Israel’s right to defend itself from them”. The comment drew a backlash from rival politicians and members of the public. Earlier this week, Labour leader Ed Miliband launched a strongly worded attack on Cameron’s Gaza policy to date, accusing his political rival of a failure in leadership and criticising his “silence on the killing of innocent Palestinians”. As the civilian death toll in Gaza rose to around 1,800, Cameron, along with the United States, finally on Monday openly criticised a recent strike near a UN school, warning Israel that targeting civilians was “wrong and illegal”. Ebola cited in suspension of 7,200 Haj visas for Africa

The Embassy of Saudi Arabia suspended visas of 7,200 pilgrims from three African countries — Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia — as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease among the pilgrims during the forthcoming Haj season. Mohammad Al-Homoud, charge d’affaires at the Saudi Embassy in the Guinean capital Conakry, said the decision to suspend the visas was issued some time back. “The governments in these countries were very much understanding of the decision, which aims mainly to boost prevention measures against the spread of the virus because the second wave of it has already kicked off,” added AlHomoud. He said these countries also want to make sure its citizens are free of the virus, adding: “The fact that the virus is still spreading compels us to continue the suspension of visas for this Haj season.” The talks between the Saudi Embassy in Conakry and the governments of these countries started four months ago. Meanwhile, Saudi Ambassador in Guinea Amjad Bedaiwi told local media that the Kingdom has put a condition that the suspension of visas will be reviewed only after World Health Organization (WHO) issues a clear cut statement that citizens in these countries are allowed to travel for Haj. Bedaiwi said the embassy extensively discussed the issue with the Guinean government, an Islamic state, where the number of its pilgrims comes to nearly 7,000 as against 400 others from both Sierra Leone and Liberia. On the other hand, Jeddah health department issued strict directions to air and sea borders’ outlets to enhance its procedures and prevent the coming of the Ebola virus-infected pilgrims. An official source at Jeddah health department stated that the measures involve monitoring the epidemic in general and checking all the incoming passengers from the neigh-

boring African countries that recorded cases of the disease to ensure that no one with a case of infection with the virus enters the Kingdom. Dr. Khalid Obaid Bawaked, assistant director of Public Health Department in Jeddah, said the measures will ensure that the virus will not enter the country. “The Ebola virus is a very dangerous disease once its first symptoms appear. The precautionary measures and the enforcement of the strict health conditions are very important, mainly because of the forthcoming Haj season where the guests of God come from all around the world,” said Bawaked. “The Ebola hemorrhagic fever caused by the virus is one of the most known lethal diseases,” he said, adding that the virus was first discovered in 1976 in a tropical district to the west of Sudan, near Zaire (now called the Democratic Republic of Congo). But the virus did not record any case outside middle and east Africa. There are five strains of the virus — Bundibugyo, Ebola-Cote d’Ivoire, Ebola-Reston, and the Ebola-Zaire and Sudan. The virus enters the body by touching the body fluids of an infected patient, such as his blood or the other fluids. The virus can be transmitted also to humans when dealing with wild animals carrying the virus such as chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, antelopes and fruits’ bats, whether sick or dead. Up till now, there is neither an effective qualitative cure for the disease nor vaccine. The treatment is generally limited to providing supportive care. Severe conditions of the disease require the provision of intensive supportive care for patients who often suffer from dehydration, and badly need the administration of fluids using solutions containing electrolytes. And because there is no effective cure or vaccine for the prevention or treatment of the disease up till this very day, precautionary and preventive measures are the only way to limit cases of infection and deaths among people. WHO recently said death cases as a result of the Ebola virus in Africa had increased to 887 deaths. The WHO statement added that there are 1,603 cases of infection with the virus in four west African states, of which there are 485 cases in Guinea, 468 in Liberia, 646 in Sierra Leone and 4 in Nigeria. Palestine pushing for Hague Court probe into Israeli war crimes in G az a

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki has said that Israel must be prosecuted at The Hague court for war crimes it committed during the offensive in Gaza, and that Palestinian authorities are planning to join the International Criminal Court (ICC). “We must do everything in our power to enable the ICC to bring to justice those responsible for war crimes,” Malki said on Tuesday after meetings with the court’s prosecutors, Reuters cited. The minister’s visit to The Hague-based court comes soon after the beginning of an Egypt-mediated truce between Israel and the Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning. The 72-hour ceasefire was agreed amid mounting global pressure to end the bloody conflict. Throughout the fighting, which has been continuing for nearly a month, Israel and Hamas have blamed each other for violating international law. The Palestinians accuse the Israeli Defense Force of targeting densely-populated areas resulting in a heavy civilian death toll, while the Israelis hit back saying Hamas was using its people as a human shield to protect fighters. HRW: Israel targets fleeing Palestinian civilians Palestine is going to seek formal membership of the ICC, which is required for the court to get jurisdiction over alleged crimes in the territories. “Everything that has happened in the last 28 days is clear evidence of war crimes committed by Israel, amounting to crimes against humanity,” Malki told reporters in The Hague. “There is no difficulty for us to show or build the case. Evidence is there ... Israel is in clear violation of international law,” the minister added. Israel, also not a member of the ICC, has declined to comment publicly on the matter. However, a senior official told Reuters that Israel would file a counter-suit against the Palestinians in response to any ICC legal action against Israel over the Gaza conflict. Since neither of the conflicting sides are members of the ICC, the court would have no jurisdiction over Gaza unless this is granted in a UN Security Council resolution. ‘Committing a war crime’: HRW calls for Israel to stop shooting at Gaza civilians In July, the United Nations launched an international inquiry into alleged human

rights violations and crimes by Israel during its military offensive in Gaza. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said house demolitions and the killing of children raised the “strong possibility” that Israel was violating international law. She cited cases of Israeli air strikes and shelling hitting houses and hospitals in the coastal enclave: “These are just a few examples where there seems to be a strong possibility that international humanitarian law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes.” Israel may be guilty of war crimes – UN Human Rights Chief By joining the ICC, the Palestinian territories would open themselves up to possible probes into crimes within their borders, as well as being able to grant jurisdiction to investigate crimes dating back to July 1, 2002. “If it entails action committed by Palestinian groups (against Israelis) then we are ready to accept that,” Malki said. “But nothing compares to the atrocities, the carnage, committed by Israel,” the minister added. In a statement to the UN Security Council, rights watchdog Amnesty International urged the Palestinian Authority and Israel to do everything within their power to enable the ICC to bring to justice those responsible for committing war crimes, and crimes against humanity in the current and past Israeli-Palestinian conflicts. “An International Criminal Court investigation is crucial to end the pervasive culture of impunity. All sides must push for the Court to investigate such crimes in order to halt the vicious cycle of violations and injustice once and for all,” Salil Shetty, the rights group head, said, as cited on Amnesty International’s website. “The UN Security Council must not stand by yet again and bear witness to mounting atrocities. It must seize this moment to act decisively for justice,” Shetty added. UN must urgently investigate war crimes in Israeli-Gaza conflict – Amnesty Intl According to Gaza officials, the number of Palestinians killed in the offensive has exceeded 1,800 – the majority of the casualties are civilians. Israel has lost 64 soldiers and three civilians. Source: Russia Today

Experts: G ive new US Ebola drug to Africans

Three of the world’s leading Ebola specialists have called for experimental drugs and vaccines to be offered to people in West Africa, where a vast outbreak of the deadly disease is raging in three countries. Noting that American aid workers who contracted the disease in Liberia were given an unapproved medicine before being evacuated back to the United States, the specialists - including Peter Piot, who co-discovered Ebola in 1976 - said Africans affected by the same outbreak should get the same chance. Piot, David Heymann and Jeremy Farrar, all influential infectious disease professors and respectively directors of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Chatham House Centre on Global Health Security, and the Wellcome Trust, said there were several antiviral drugs, monoclonal antibodies and vaccines under study for possible use against Ebola. “African governments should be allowed to make informed decisions about whether or not to use these products - for example to protect and treat healthcare workers who run especially high risks of infection,” they wrote in a joint statement. The World Health Organization (WHO), “the only body with the necessary international authority” to allow such experimental treatments, “must take on this greater leadership role”, they said. “These dire circumstances call for a more robust international response,” they added. Almost 900 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have been killed by Ebola and more than

1,600 infected since the virus started spreading in Guinea in February. Two American aid workers who fell sick with Ebola in Liberia saw their conditions improve by varying degrees in Liberia after they received an experimental drug called ZMapp, developed by San Diego-based private biotech firm Mapp Biopharmaceutical. Piot, Farrar and Heymann questioned why Africans were not being given the same chance. If the deadly virus was raging though wealthy countries, they said, medical agencies “would begin discussions with companies and labs developing these products and then make rapid decisions about which of them might be appropriate for compassionate use”. “Experimental treatments shouldn’t be rolled out generally without prior safety testing,” they said in their statement, issued in London late on Tuesday. “But in the face of the critical challenge in West Africa, the WHO and Western medical agencies should be helping countries weigh the risks and benefits of limited deployment of the best (drug and vaccine) candidates to those in the greatest need, while continuously monitoring safety and efficacy.” Biotech firm Mapp and its commercial partner Leaf Biopharmaceutical said the ZMapp drug was only identified as a potential treatment candidate in January and that, as a result, very little of it was currently available. The company said that the treatment was hard to produce and that it was working to scale up production as soon as possible. The ZMapp serum consists of three antibodies manufactured in modified tobacco leaves, which take weeks to grow. A spokesman for the Geneva-based WHO told Reuters news agency that the United Nations health agency “would not recommend any drug that has not gone through the normal process of licensing and clinical trials”. Treating patients with experimental drugs that have not been tested in humans to determine safety and efficacy is highly unusual. Source: Al-Jazeera

O bama: We tortured some folks after 9/11

The United States tortured Al-Qaeda detainees captured after the 9/11 attacks, President Barack Obama acknowledged Friday, in some of his most expansive comments to date about a controversial set of CIA practices that he banned after taking office. “We tortured some folks,” he said during a televised news conference at the White House. “We did some things that were contrary to our values.” Addressing the impending release of a Senate report that criticizes CIA treatment of detainees, Obama said he believed the mistreatment happened because of the pressure national security officials felt to forestall another attack. He said Americans should not be too “sanctimonious” about passing judgment through the lens of a seemingly safer present day. That posture, which he expressed as a candidate

for national office in 2008 and early in his presidency, explains why Obama did not push to pursue criminal charges against the George W. Bush–era officials who carried out the CIA program. To this day, many of those officials insist that what they did was not torture, which is a felony under U.S. law. Still, Obama’s remarks on Friday were more emphatic than his previous comments on the subject, including a 2009 speech in which he trumpeted his ban on “so-called enhanced interrogation techniques” and “brutal methods” but did not flatly say the U.S. engaged in torture. “I believe that waterboarding was torture and, whatever legal rationales were used, it was a mistake,” he said in April 2009. Obama on Friday did not address two other central arguments of the soon-tobe-released Senate report — that the brutal interrogations didn’t produce lifesaving intelligence and that the CIA lied to other elements of the U.S. government about exactly what it was doing. The president expressed confidence in his CIA director, John Brennan, in the wake of an internal CIA report documenting that the spy agency improperly accessed Senate computers. There have been calls on Capitol Hill for Brennan’s resignation. Source: Al-Jazeera

China bans beards, veils from Xinjiang city s buses

A city in China’s restive western region of Xinjiang has banned people with head scarves, veils and long beards from boarding buses, as the government battles unrest with a policy that critics said discriminates against Muslims. Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people who speak a Turkic language, has been beset for years by violence that the government blames on Islamist militants or separatists. Authorities will prohibit five types of passengers — those who wear veils, head scarves, a loose-fitting garment called a jilbab, clothing with the crescent moon and star, and those with long beards - from boarding buses in the northwestern city of Karamay, state media said. The crescent moon and star symbol of Islam features on many national flags, besides being used by groups China says want to set up an independent state called East Turkestan. The rules were intended to help strengthen security through August 20 during an athletics event and would be enforced by security teams, the ruling Communist Party-run

Karamay Daily said on Monday. “Those who do not comply, especially those five types of passengers, will be reported to the police,” the paper said. In July, authorities in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi banned bus passengers from carrying items ranging from cigarette lighters to yogurt and water, in a bid to prevent violent attacks. Exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say the government’s repressive policies in Xinjiang, including controls on Islam, have provoked unrest, a claim Beijing denies. “Officials in Karamay city are endorsing an openly racist and discriminatory policy aimed at ordinary Uighur people,” Alim Seytoff, the president of the Washingtonbased Uyghur American Association, said in an emailed statement. While many Uighur women dress in much the same casual style as those elsewhere in China, some have begun to wear the full veil, a garment more common in Pakistan or Afghanistan than in Xinjiang. Police have offered money for tips on everything from “violent terrorism training” to individuals who grow long beards. Hundreds have died in unrest in Xinjiang in the past 18 months, but tight security makes it almost impossible for journalists to make independent assessments of the violence. About 100 people were killed when knife-wielding attackers staged assaults in two towns in the region’s south in late July, state media said, including 59 “terrorists” shot dead by police. Putin O rders Retaliatory Measures Against U.S., European Sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he has ordered his government to prepare retaliatory measures against U.S. and European economic sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine crisis, but added any new moves must avoid harming Russian consumers, domestic news agencies reported. “This must be done very carefully, to support domestic producers but not harm consumers,” Interfax quoted him as saying on a visit to the Voronezh region, south of Moscow. He didn’t provide more details. “Political tools of economic pressure are unacceptable, they contradict all norms and rules,” he said. “In that connection, the government of Russia has already proposed a series of retaliatory measures against the so-called sanctions of certain countries. I think that in current conditions, with the goal of protecting the interests of domestic producers, we could certainly think about that.” he added. Earlier Tuesday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev

said Russia would formulate its response to European economic sanctions imposed last week that effectively forced the closure of Dobrolet, an airline that was flying to Crimea, the Ukrainian region that Russia annexed in March. Russia’s Vedomosti newspaper reported Tuesday that the government was considering a partial or total ban on overflights of Siberia by European airlines, which use the route to shorten trips from Europe to Asia. Government officials declined to comment on the report, however. In recent weeks, the U.S. and Europe have imposed sanctions on dozens of top Russian officials, businessmen, as well as banks and companies in an effort to get Moscow to cut its support for pro-Russian separatists fighting in Ukraine. Last week, the U.S. and EU expanded the restrictions to the financial sector, as well as technology for oil drilling and military equipment. Russian officials have vowed to defy the sanctions pressure and retaliate, though they didn’t specify how. In recent days, Russian regulators have banned shipments of some European fruits and vegetables and raised questions about the safety of products from McDonald’s Corp. in Russia, threatening to ban their sale. Officials deny any political motivation for those moves. Source: Wall Street Journal

Importance of Celebrating Pakistan Independence Day On 14 August, 1947, Pakistan became an independent country, yet the unbearable cost was sky high; the damage in terms of the lost honor of the violated women and their murders would remain irreparable forever. Indeed, the massive migration, amid widespread communal violence, ethnic cleansing/ genocide, trainloads of slaughtered Muslims and the mercilessly raped young women, reminds us of the trauma of all those who sacrificed just to give a comfortable independent land to the new Pakistanis. In his address to the ‘would be Pakistanis, Mr Jinnah particularly emphasised,’ “You are free to go to your temples; you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed – that has nothing to do with the business of the state.”

Some important facts in chronological order: 1948--Sadly, Muhammed Ali Jinnah, founding leader of Pakistan, dies. First war with India over disputed territory of Kashmir takes place. 1951:Jinnah’s successor Liaquat Ali Khan is assassinated. 1956: Constitution proclaims Pakistan an Islamic republic. (1958) Martial law is declared and General Ayub Khan takes over and becomes president in 1960. 1965 Indo-Pak second war is fought over Kashmir. 1969: General Ayub Khan quits and General Yahya Khan takes over. 1970: Victory in general elections in East Pakistan for breakaway Awami League, leads to rising tension with West Pakistan. 1971: East Pakistan breaks away and proclaims sovereignty as Bangladesh with Indian help. 1973: Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto becomes prime minister. The constitution of Pakistan is re-tailored. 1977: Deadly riots erupt over allegations of vote-rigging by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). General Zia-ul-Haq usurps the constitution in a coup. 1978: He

becomes president and launches campaign to introduce Islamic system in Pakistan. 1979: Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is executed on charges of murder. 1980: The US pledges military assistance to Pakistan following Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.1986: Bhutto’s daughter Benazir returns from exile to lead PPP in campaign for fresh elections. 1988 August: President Zia, the US ambassador and top Pakistan army commanders die in mysterious air crash. Ghulam Ishaq Khan takes over the presidency. In November, Benazir Bhutto’s PPP wins general election. 1990 - Benazir Bhutto is dismissed as prime minister on charges of bad governance and corruption. 1993: President Ishaq Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif both resign under pressure from military. General elections bring Benazir Bhutto back to power. 1996: President Leghari dismisses Bhutto government on corruption charges. 1997: Nawaz Sharif returns as prime minister after his Pakistan Muslim League party wins elections. 1998: Pakistan goes ahead with its own nuclear tests after India explodes several nuclear devices. Stoppage of Bus # 96 at 92 Ave.

By :R.C.Puri, Surrey Bus # 96 operates from the Newton Exchange to Guildford via Surrey Central Station. On its way at the King George Blvd. it halts at 76, 80, 88, 96 and King George Sky train Station before reaching Surrey Central Station and when it moves ahead from Surrey Central Station towards Guildford it stops after every four blocks in the way. In other words, it may rightly be positioned that the bus stopovers after every four blocks throughout its journey, save at Blocks Nos. 84 and 92, although there is no denying fact that the commuters do get

into and get down from the bus and feel the necessity of the supra bus service, which is currently denied to them for no conceivable reason. It is nothing short of a discrimination with the passengers using the Bus stops of Blocks Nos. 84 and 92 for accessing the public transport at the said route. Hence, the attention of the appropriate Trans link is hereby invited to pay heed to this most unpretentious request and include the said Blocks also in the designated stops of Bus # 96, so that the even handed justice is accorded to all the commuters and this sort of arbitrary and irrational discrimination is eliminated.

SubhanAllah, Good to know all aren’t evil. By: Gulshan Alani There is a Light at the end of the Tunnel. Because there are many righteous people standing up against the evil of others. And the group J.V.P is one of the many other righteous groups I know and support since I converted to Islam. SubhanAllah. This proves my motion: All Muslims aren’t bad and all the Jews and Christians aren’t bad as they believe in pure ‘Justice’.We should be watchful of those fake Muslims who are wearing the fake Mask, cheating with the surface fake ID of spirituality, pluralist, secular, and moderate, but from behind the curtain, and underground scheme supporting the

Suggestion: Internationally, the stolen Pakistani water and the neighbors’ intriguing attitude are among some of the headaches that need to be addressed on a top priority basis with a Pakistan friendly foreign policy in place at the earliest. With respect to the allegations of locally stolen mandate (ballot) and economic downturn, answer lies only in encouraging a level playing field to reproduce constructive conscience of the entire nation; that would generate peaceful atmosphere. It’s absolutely necessary to keep paying tribute to those who dedicated their lives to earn freedom for us. Although the people of Pakistan celebrate the Independence Day with patriotism, yet they should remember what Jinnah’s dream was; many among us seem to have forgotten the reason for the formation of Pakistan. . across India and upon passing of each day, situation was going out of control. This was certainly not something expected by Mountbatten and hence such circumstances forced him to prepone the date of independence by almost an year, from 1948 to 1947. It was decided in the meeting (related to independence & partition) on June 3, 1947 which was aptly titled “June 3 Mountbatten plan”.

Why 15th Aug? It was Lord Mountbatten who had personally decided the date of Aug 15 because he had considered that date to be “very lucky” for his career. During the World War II, it was on Aug 15, 1945 (Japan timezone) that the Japanese Army had surrendered before him (Lord Mountbatten was the commander of the allied forces).

Why midnight? When the date of independence was decided in “June 3 plan” and announced to public, there was an outrage among astrologers across the country because 15-Aug-1947 was an “unfortunate & unholy” date according to astroWe have also included information about sub continent as a display of peace and harmony wished by both communities. logical calculations. Alternative dates were suggested but Lord Mountbatten was adamant on Aug 15 (since it was his lucky date). As a workaround, the astrologers suggested the midnight hour between Aug 14 and 15 due to the simple reason that the day according to English starts at 12 AM, but according to Hindu calendar, starts at sunrise. Detailed reasons can be found in this astrological analysis: The astrologers had insisted that the speech of acknowledgement of transfer of power be done within the 48 minutes window (referred to as “Abhijeet Muhurta”) which lasted between 24 minutes before and after 12:15am i.e between 11:51pm & 12:39am. Nehru had to deliver a speech only within that timeframe and an additional constraint was that the speech had to end by 12 AM, so that the holy conch (Shanka) be blown to herald the birth of a new nation at the stroke of midnight hour, and the rest is history. http://guruprasad.net/posts/why-midnight-of15-august-1947-for-indian-independence/ high respect for these people who contribute to the economic prosperity of Canada and are also equipping their future generations with high education and skills to serve this country and making it stronger and more prosperous. At the end, I once again request to all Pakistani Canadians that be proud of your Pakistani origin, and live here with peace and dignity as ambassadors. Promote Pakistani businesses and their products and make your contribution in benefiting both Canadian and Pakistani economies. Feel free to comment on this colourful issue as your concerns and suggestions are highly appreciated for improving our quality in future. United we stand, divided we fall. A D FVAE I RT THI S E R Hadith No: 60 Book 1 Narrated By ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr : Once the Prophet remained behind us in a journey. He joined us while we were performing ablution for the prayer which was over-due. We were just passing wet hands over our feet (and not washing them properly) so the Prophet addressed us in a loud voice and said twice or thrice: “Save your heels from the fire.”

Islam on Its Own Terms We Muslims have always been longing for a “return” to the good life for centuries now. And understandably so. That’s why it is not only regrettable, but oh so sorrowful, that we are totally mired in trying to understand what we as a people believe through the ideas and histories of others. There are many reasons for this. But the most important is the widening gap separating us-not from knowing Islam’s basic beliefs and rituals, but-from seeking to understand them and Islam’s major concepts on their own terms. Not to wax political, but the easiest example of this is the question ever in the backdrop of the public discourse on Muslims: Why do Muslims not have freedom and democracy? But think about these two concepts for a moment, and conceptually they are filled with problems. Democracy started in Athens, enfranchised the rich, and totally divested the poor, the slave, and the foreigner, of any rights. One need only look around today to see there is still nothing close to a standard for its application in the cultures that celebrate it. The same can be said of freedom, an even vaguer notion. Are women who must uncover their faces to access the public square in order to appease cultural insecurities free? Islam certainly upholds the concepts of participation and personal and public choice in shura and other principles. In fact, its notion of participation in public life and policymaking is significantly broader and its freedoms

far more sweeping and protected. But the crucial issue is what concepts are given priority. Islam’s prime social value-under which these two common concepts and all others are subsumed-is justice (‘adl), and excelling in good-doing (ihsan), or personal social responsibility borne of religious conviction. Allah says: Indeed, Allah commands the execution of justice among you and the doing of good to others... [16:90]. Hence, in Islam because of its emphasis and elevation of prescribed justice, as opposed to undefined notions of democracy and freedom, even if there were slaves, as in Athens, or if someone’s freedom was lost, as with a prisoner, there nonetheless could be no loss of justice. This has the virtue of preserving both participation and freedom because God has enshrined justice over these other concepts. You could not, for instance, in Islam deprive the slave or felon from voting, or the prisoner of war from sharing in your own food or clothing, even if you were yourself hungry and ill-clad. The point is you cannot understand this if you are taking your conceptual framework-even for your own religion-from people fixated on certain ideas that have been developed in their societies and cultures as a reaction to their very distinctive histories. The result of this mixing can only be confusion. And values confusion,

indeed, is what we Muslims are currently much about, in my humble observation. We must learn and fathom the concepts of Islam on their own terms. In other words, as the Qur’an has defined them, as the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, has exemplified them, and as our scholars for the last 14 centuries have preserved, related, explicated, and translated them for our benefit. That is not to say we should ignore and cannot learn from others. But wholesale importation of un-indigenized concepts and, especially, uncritically accepted frameworks from the historically shaped outlooks of others-this is disastrous. In fact, when it comes to Muslims, who are the prophetic community of the latter-day world, this is a dereliction of the highest order and communal cowardice. Nowhere is what I’ve been talking about clearer than with the current environmental tragedy that is now literally threatening the entire planet and everyone and everything on it with annihilation. Could the stakes be higher? Yet when it comes

to the environment, Muslims are not merely voiceless, they are in a fetal posture of waiting to receive instructions from others-and the very same peoples whose cultural conceptions got us into this mess in the first place. How foolish is that? Islam has everything to say and to give to the world when it comes to rescuing humanity from its current collective suicide, and rescuing the planet from humanity. This is because it knows that at its core the crisis of the environment is the spiritual crisis of man. And, above all, Islam has the conceptual language and sources to reorient and re-inspire man to his humble yet gallant role as steward of the earth, khalifah. Islam understands that these concepts of preservation, conservation, protection, cooperation, abstention, moderation are not freefloating ideas, but Heavenly perspectives held together by two things: The divine decree of a single, solitary Master, God; and the human realization that He shall interrogate His servants, us, on that looming Last Day about the blessings-the furnished habitation, and the food, water, and air-He has bestowed to us, for both our enjoyment and our care. Why not gift this, this perspective, this inheritance of ours, to the world, now, in its hour of need? Us. We Muslims. Forget about the power and the glory. Focus on conveying this panacea for humanity and its habitation to everyone. We surely can do it, with the permission of Allah-but not before we ourselves come to fathom our deen by and on its own terms. Within lies the answer. Source : Jumuah Magazine,

BCMA Surrey Chapters Celebrate Eid ul Fitr in open field for the first time

On July 28, the BCMA Surrey Delta and Surrey East jointly arranged Eid ul Fitr Prayer in Newton Athletic Park in Surrey at 9:30 am. Over five thousand people came together and paid Zakat, Sadaqas and Fitrana and heard the Eid Khutba by Mufti Asim Rashid. Many political leaders were present to observe Muslims celebrating Eid jointly. Before Mufti Asim’s khutba, President of BCMA Mr. Musa Ismail read his short Eid message. Mr. Adam Bukush facilitated the entire program. Qari Abdul Wahib led the Eid ul Fitr Salah on a beautiful sunny day. He made Dua for all Muslim Ummah and at the end the people greeted each other with Eid Mubarak. Muft Asim Rashid said in his English Eid’s Speech, ‘’ It is grace and special bounty of Allah (SWT) that He has gathered us today at here on this auspicious Day in such numbers and has enable us to celebrate the Eid ul Fitr. This Eid comes after the completion the month

of Ramadan and the Holy book of Quran revealed in this month and the Quran is a guidance for all mankind”. He also reminded that the Quran says Allah wants people connecting to Him, remembering him, to be worried about what He thinks. If you you call yourself Allah`s salves what qualities do you have? Allah`s people are not those who cause destruction in the world, they are not people who disturb the systems of the world. Muslims respond to the word of peace. There are all kinds of people in the world. There are good people and bad. If you are among the good people, you have the qualities which Allah(SWT) wants in you and for bad people, see Quran Sura 114 Al Naas. Today we are less in numbers but we are not inferior in wealth, we are not inferior in power. If these people stand up after the beautiful month of Ramadan and make the pledge themselves to spend rest of their life in light of Quran’s teachings and act according to

them, then everyone will see the change very quickly. And if after the Ramadan we become and revert to being the same people that we were before, then we are nowhere. The world wants to know where and who the Muslims are: Who are we as a neighbours, students, elders, businessmen, professionals, individuals, friends ? Show the world the beauty of Islam, no matter that what they are seeing in Media about Islam.. So start praying 5 times a day, and Duas for all Ummah in your life,. We want Allah(SWT) to help all brothers and sisters of Palestine, Syria, Africa and every other part of the world but what level of commitment we have with Allah(SWT) , what we are asking for and what we are giving. The basic Muslim duty is to pray 5 times which cannot be compromised, this is who you are. Mufti Asim appealed to all youngsters that they should connect to the Masajids, connect themselves to those places where things are

happenings. It is the time of young Ummah, first step is to come and learn your Deen. We are one Ummah and one body; we feel the pain across the world. Let’s unite, today we are divided in families, Masajids, neighbourhoods, languages. Come out and act as one Ummah, one Kalama slogan , we stay under it no matter what happens. May Allah(SWT) accept all Ibadats and Duas in this month of Ramadan and forgive all our Sins (Ameen). Note: Miracle Media congratulates the BCMA Surrey Delta and Surrey East management and all volunteers who did an excellent job with making the arrangements and provided all facilities to those who came for Eid Prayer first time at an open and comfortable place. This gathering brought out the Unity of people in Surrey and Delta and also helped to show the masses to the rest. Hopefully in future more people will come out and show their unity with Muslim Ummah (Ameen).

The Birth of a N ation

Price of the Freedom

On 14 August 1947, just 10 minutes before midnight, All India Radio (AIR) broadcast its last programme and thereafter, a song composed by Khawaja Khurshid Anwar was aired by the Lahore radio station. Then a minute before midnight a broadcast (in English by Mr Zahoor Ahmed and in Urdu by Mustapha ali Hamadani) informed the awaiting listeners that exactly at midnight Pakistan will emerge as an independent state on the world map. Then at exactly at midnight 14-15 August

Road

to Independence

This part has been divided into various segments to conform to the developments that gradually took place between 1857 to1947 - the last century foothold of the British in the British India.

“Jange-e-Azadi” (War of Independence) Although the British Empire expanded, the native Indians never accepted their dominance. On May 10, 1857, Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, drawn mostly from Muslim units from Bengal, rose against the British in the Meerut garrison some 80 km from Delhi and marched to Delhi. The rising was mainly to protest against the use of the newly issued rifle bullets, alleged to have a wax sealing made of the fats of pigs that was to be removed from the teeth before use. Since pigs are forbidden in the Islam, the Muslim soldiers resented its use and took up arms against their British masters. At Delhi, they captured the famous “Lal Qila” (Red Fort) and reinstated Bahadar Shah Zafar (the last Mughul monarch) to throne. Soldiers in other garrisons also followed the suit and soon much of north and central India was plunged into a yearlong insurrection against the British. The British reacted and laid a siege of the Fort, which continued for a while but finally the British owing to their access to artillery and large number of forces stormed the Fort. Bahadur Shah Zafar fled to Humayun’s tomb. The British plundered Delhi and killed many Indian soldiers (and civilians) and artillery was set up in the main mosque in the city to bombard suspected localities, specially the homes of the Muslim nobility. The British forces also arrested Bahadur Shah and days after the arrest, a British officer William Hodson shot Shah’s sons Mirza Moghul, Mirza Khizr Sultan, and Mirza Abu Bakr and shamefully presented their heads to the Shah.

Ali Garh to Muslim League As a consequence to 1857 events, the British government brought India under the direct control of Crown and a Viceroy was appointed to represent the Crown. They also increased the number of British soldiers in relation to native and allowed only British soldiers to handle artillery. In 1877 Queen Victoria took the title of Empress of India. Bahadur Shah was exiled to Rangoon, in Burma where he died in 1862, finally bringing the Mughal dynasty to an end. Although the “Jange-e-Azadi” (Liberation War) was brutally quelched, the spark for independence and throwing away the yoke of slavery at the hands of the British had been ignited.

While the War of Independence had many repercussions, the intolerance towards the Muslims by the British increased manifold and the Muslims felt deprived and left out in fields of education and representation in government service. Attacks by Hindu fundamentalists against religious conversion, cow killing, and the preservation of Urdu in Arabic script deepened their fears of minority status. In order to keep the Muslims in the mainstream, rose Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and launched a movement for Muslim regeneration that culminated in the founding of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875 (later renamed Aligarh Muslim University in 1921). Its objective was to educate Muslims by emphasizing the compatibility of Islam with western knowledge. On 30 December 1906 the All-India Muslim League was founded to safeguard the interests of the Muslims. A delegation also met with the viceroy, Gilbert John Elliot, seeking special considerations in government service and electorates. This had positive effect and in 1911 When King-Emperor George V visited India, he announced the reversal of the partition of Bengal and the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to present day New Delhi.

Jinnah and Pakistan Movement

Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who had initially joined the Congress was grossly dissatisfied with the Congress attitude towards Muslims and thus joined the Muslim League in 1913. It was with his efforts that Congress recognized the separate position of the Muslims and the Muslims’ demand for a separate electorate as a part of the Lucknow Pact. However the Hindu prejudice against the Muslims could not be hidden for long and the publication of Nehru Report (1928) was a great setback to Lucknow Pact, since the Nehru Report negated all its clauses. It became evident that Congress and Hindus wanted to become the ruler of India on the basis of

1947, a broadcast in English, followed by in Urdu reached the listeners “ This is Pakistan Broadcasting Service”. This broadcast was followed by recitation of Holy Quran (Surah Al Fatah 1-4) by Maulana Zahir al Qasmi. This was followed by a “na’at” by Muhammad Azam Chishti, a “qaseeda” by Hafeez Jalandhari (later the architect of Pakistan National Anthem), an orchestra composed by Khawaja Khurshid Anwar and a “qawwali” by Santoo Khan and others.14 August 1947, a day in the history when a new nation was carved out of

numerical strength and make Muslims their subjects. This was not acceptable to Muslims since they had ruled India for centuries and after British subjugation, they were again to fall under the Hindus as their subjects. Jinnah therefore refused to accept the report and presented his famous 14 Points to solve the political problems in India. The Muslims wished that their separate identity should be recognized and provided constitutional safeguards to protect their rights. It was then that the first proponents of independent Muslim nation began to appear. Among the first of these was writer/philosopher Allama Iqbal, who felt that a separate nation for Muslims was essential in an otherwise Hindu-dominated subcontinent. The cause found a leader in Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who became known as Father of the Nation and eventually persuaded the British to partition the region into Muslim-majority Pakistan, and Hindu-majority India. In the meantime Choudhary Rahmat Ali a ambridge student coined the word “PAKISTAN” for a would-be Muslim country, which was published on 28th January 1933 in the pamphlet “Now or Never.” He made the name an acronym of the different states/homelands/regions, which broke down into: P(Punjab), A(Afghania - a reference to the North West Frontier Province), K(Kashmir), S(Sindh) and TAN(BalochisTAN), thus forming “’PAK - STAN’”. An “i”’ was later added to the the name to ease pronunciation, producing “PAKISTAN.”

The Lahore Resolution The British Government under the new constitution held the elections in 1937, in which Congress gained majority and formed government in six large provinces. In connivance with the government, Hindus started persecuting the Muslims and Hindi was introduced instead of Urdu. The introduction of “Bande Matram”, the Hindus’ national anthem did the rest. Therefore, the Muslim League decided to ask for a separate homeland for themselves as by now it was clear that both Hindus and Muslims could not co-exist under one flag. In the 27th annual session on 23 March 1940 at Lahore, the Muslim League under Jinnah demanded a separate homeland for the Muslims of Indian sub-continent. Thereafter, Muslims all over India were asked to join Muslims League to safe guard their identity. In the meantime the 2nd world War had already started and the British government wanted whole hearted Indian support, therefore the Viceroy promised that the constitution would be framed in consultation with representatives of the people after the war. In 1942 Sir Stafford Cripps proposed dominion status to India under British Crown. While Congress rejected the proposal since it wanted full control over the affairs of the government, Muslim League rejected it since it didn’t promise a separate homeland for them. Thereafter be-

the British India after a long and tiring struggle of Muslims of India. For years since 711 AD, when Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded the Indian sub-continent, Muslims had been the rulers till subjugated by the British in 1857. Therefore, the independence in 1947 from the British yoke was a God-given opportunity to live as per the aspirations of Islamic values. From 1947 till date, Pakistan’s history has seen many ups and downs, finally losing half of it in 1971. The history of Pakistan can easily be divided into roughly 10-years brackets, each having own peculiarities and repercussions on its future.

tween 1942-45 many attempts were made to break the deadlock, but the Congress refused to accept the separate identity for the Muslims. This further united the Muslims, which resulted into land slide victory for Muslims in 1945-46 elections. It clearly showed that Muslims were a separate entity and that their demand for a separate homeland was just.

The Final Days The one year period between 1946 till partition of India was very confusing, disturbing and crucial for the future of the Muslims. The British now realized that Muslims were a powerful entity and could not be ignored. But at the same time they never wanted to annoy the Hindus who were in majority. Therefore in 1946, a delegation from England arrived with three suggestions: (1) The Constituent Assembly should prepare the constitution, (2) Adoption of federal form of government and (3) British India to be divided in three groups: (a) First Group - Muslim majority provinces of Bengal and Asam, (b) Second Group - Punjab, NWFP, Sind and Balochistan and (c) the Hindu majority Third Group. All groups should compulsorily remain in the Federation for TEN YEARS, after which they had the choice to get separated and become independent. Congress obviously rejected the proposal since it saw creation of Pakistan after ten years while Muslims rejected it since they could not wait for ten years. Therefore Muslim League started a country wide campaign to expose the covert collaboration between the Congress and the government. After the failure of a provisional government in 1946, where Congress and League members could not sit together, on 20 February 1947 the British Prime Minister Lord Attlee declared that British government would transfer power to people of subcontinent by June 1947. However the new Viceroy Lord Mountbatten assessed that there was no hope for a political reconciliation and only solution was division of British India into two independent states; Bharat (India) for Hindus and Pakistan for Muslims. On June3, 1947, the partition of British India and establishment of Pakistan on 14th August 1947 was announced.

End of an Empire With the creation of Pakistan on 14 August 1947, the British Indian Empire faded into the history. But left behind many scars that still haunt peace and stability in the region. Kashmir being the major dispute because of which not only peace in the region is unattainable but has brought India and Pakistan face to face on a number of occasions. The latest escalation in year 2002 almost brought the two nations at brink of war and at a nuclear flash point. So long the dispute remains unresolved, no worthwhile peace can be ensured in the region and people of both countries would continue to suffer. Road to Independence On 3 June 1947, Viscount Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last British Governor-General of India, announced the partitioning of the British Indian Empire into an India and Pakistan, under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947. At stroke of midnight, on 15 August 1947, India became an independent

nation. This was preceded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous speech titled Tryst with destiny. “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again. ” Prime Minister Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel invited Lord Mountbatten to continue as Governor General of India. He was replaced in June 1948 by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. Patel took on the responsibility of unifying 565 princely states, steering efforts by his “iron fist in a velvet glove” policies, exemplified by the use of military force to integrate Junagadh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Hyderabad state into India. The Constituent Assembly completed the work of drafting the constitution on 26 November 1949; on 26 January 1950 the Republic of India was officially proclaimed. The Constituent Assembly elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as the first President of India, taking over from Governor General Rajgopalachari. Subsequently, a free and sovereign India absorbed two other territories: Goa (liberated from Portuguese control in 1961) and Pondicherry (which the French ceded in 1954). In 1952, India held its first general elections, with a voter turnout exceeding 62%; in practice, this made India the world’s largest democracy.

Selected by: Nasser Pirzada Pakistan’s Independence Day, which is annually held on August 14, celebrates the country’s independence from the British rule on that date in 1947. This day is an occasion to promote patriotism and national unity

What Do People Do? People all over Pakistan celebrate Independence Day with patriotic zest. Many people who attend the Independence Day parades dress up in green and white, which are the Pakistani flag’s colors. People visit national monuments and places of

S P E C I A L

national significance to celebrate Independence Day. This is also a time to meet relatives, exchange gifts and visit recreational spots. Pakistan’s national flag is hoisted on public, private buildings, residences and monuments at dawn. Official buildings, including Parliament House, are decorated and colorfully lit. The prime minister and president address and congratulate the nation and talk about the day’s significance. Streets and houses are decorated with candles, oil lamps and pennants. Firework shows are put together on the eve of Independence Day.

Pakistan’s Independence Day also pays homage to people who devoted their lives for Pakistan’s freedom movement and made sacrifices to attain Pakistan’s independence. A change of guard takes place at national monuments, including the mausoleums of Muhammad Iqbal, who was a poet, philosopher, and politician, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who is considered by many as Pakistan’s founder and Quaid-i-Azam (supreme leader). Events held during the day include special theatre shows, national song competitions, concerts, and Independence Day pageants. Radio and television stations broadcast national songs and specially prepared Independence Day programs.

Public Life Independence Day is an official holiday in Pakistan on August 14. All governmental, non-governmental offices, organizations, educational institutions, post offices, and major markets are closed. Public transport remains unavailable on all major routes. Traffic congestion is common due to Independence Day parades.

Background The Indo-Pak subcontinent remained a British colony from 1849–1947. The subcontinent’s inhabitants did not approve of the British rule in united India. An uprising that occurred in 1857 eventually formed the shape of a freedom movement, which exemplifies the efforts of the people of British India in gaining their independence. Muslims ruled the subcontinent before the British

incursion and suffered due to the 1857 uprising against the British East India Company. Leaders such as Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Syed Ameer Ali worked diligently for the Muslim people’s political advancement. The Indian National Congress was formed in 1885, which later on became British India’s largest political party. Major Muslim political leaders, including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, were members of the Indian National Congress and worked towards Hindu-Muslim unity and India’s independence. The All India Muslim League was founded on December 30, 1906. There was growing demand for an independent Muslim state in India. In 1930 Muhammad Iqbal presented the idea of a separate Muslim state that would geographically consist of the Muslim majority areas in the subcontinent. The word Pakistan is a conjunction of two words Pak meaning Pure and Stan meaning Land, a name coined by Choudhary Rahmat Ali.Strong Hindu nationalism gave birth to the Two Nation Theory, an ideology that is accredited as being

the basis for Pakistan’s creation. In 1940 the Pakistan Resolution was passed in Lahore demanding greater Muslim autonomy in British India. After World War II, it was expected that the British colonies would soon disintegrate. The Pakistan Movement, spearheaded by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, resulted in creating a Muslim state. Pakistan gained independence from the British rule on August 14, 1947. At its birth, Pakistan had two parts commonly referred to as East and West Pakistan. In 1971 East Pakistan parted from West Pakistan and became Bangladesh.

Symbols Green and white are Pakistan’s official colors. White represents peace while green symbolizes prosperity and good fortune.

PCCA hosted a peaceful “Walk for Peace”in Surrey

Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association of BC (PCCA BC) hosted a peaceful yet impactful “Walk for Peace” on 2nd August 2014, in Bear Creek Park. Strategically placing themselves on the parking grounds of Surrey Arts Centre, the silent peaceful gathering began with local politicians, including the likes of Ms. Jinny Sims, Mr. Jasbir Sandhu, Mr. Bruce Rolston, Mr. Harry Bains, along with other community members, delivering short speeches on their thoughts against violence and atrocities around the world. A crowd of well over 150 concerned individuals came out at the start of a long weekend to show their support to the cause, including various well known community members, representing various different communities. Some well known personalities, such as Ms.

Ericka Virk, Mr. Islahuddin Siddique, a hockey legend, and other businesses joined as well. A well handled crowd and pre-planned route by PCCA BC led though a short walk, before gathering at the busiest corner of Surrey, at King George Boulevard and 88th Avenue, where they held banners and placards, and held their silence, letting banners and placards do the talking. PCCA BC President Mr. Naveed Waraich thanked his team, especially Mr. Tarik Kiani of Sohni Dharti Pakistan Channel to collaborate on the inititaive of “Walk for Peace” held in Surrey, BC.

A Public Rally and Vigil in Surrey’s Holland Park As the land of Palestine is witnessing yet another brutal episode of a collective human tragedy, The Committee of Progressive Pakistani Canadians (CPPC) felt its humanitarian obligations and hold a public rally and vigil in Surrey’s Holland Park. Over 400 men, women and children from all walks of life, from all religions, castes and creeds gathered on call of Progressive Pakistanis

at ‘Stand Up for Gaza Rally and showed their support for their Palestinian brother/sisterhood. Shahzad Nazir Khan, the Executive Member of Committee of Progressive Pakistani Canadians has said that the rally was made possible because of the tremendous support by Canada Palestine Association, Fraser Valley Peace Council, Independent Jewish Voices and SANSAD. He further

added that this very well attended rally attracted media and public attention and it also helped to renewed our commitments, our stand and our practical stance towards human rights, justice and peace in the world and especially for our grieved Brothers and Sisters of Palestine. Rally participants were waving Palestinian flags and placards denouncing the barbarism and genocide commit-

ted by Zionist group and Israeli occupied forces. Candles were lit and at the end demonstrators gathered at the corner of 100 avenue and King George Blvd, where they observed a minute of silence and prayers to pay tribute to the innocent victims of Gaza and Palestine.

A question from Gaza: Am I not human enough?

Maisam Abumorr I remember when I attended a three-day workshop on international law and human rights by the ICRC in Gaza, one of the attendees asked the trainer: “What do I do to be qualified to obtain those human rights?” The trainer replied without much thought: “Nothing. You should be a human, that’s all”. The question now is, what am I supposed to do/be to be qualified as a human? As far as I can tell, I live like normal humans do. I love, I hate, I cry, I laugh, I make mistakes, I learn, I dream, I hurt, I get hurt, I love pizza, I watched Titanic 6 times, I have a crush on Bradly Cooper, I get sick, I sometimes tell lame jokes to which only I laugh and last time I checked myself in the mirror I very much looked human. The only difference is that an occupying nation came from nowhere to claim exclusive ownership of my land on which an endless chain of my ancestors lived, and they started to ethnically cleanse my people. My

only sin is that I stood up and fought for my lost land and for everything that is dear to me.The world accused me of terrorism just because I refused to be killed like an animal. But, even an animal will fight for its life. I obeyed the US and went to elections; I voted for a party which met my expectations. But then I was punished for practicing the very democracy they taught me. I didn’t realize that the modern definition of democracy is to elect a party approved by the US, not a party that the majority of voters want. As a result, I was put under severe blockade and was subject to systematic starvation, locked in a tiny patch of land isolated from the rest of the world for years. I finished my university degree in that period, studying for my finals by candle light and writing entire research papers by hand. I often spent the long school days without having enough money to buy food because my father, an engineer, had nothing to build with. Within four strenuous years I gradu-

ated with big dreams. Unfortunately, they were bigger than my reality. I remained jobless despite the huge potential I have. I stood up and fought for what I perceived as my basic rights but what the whole world calls terrorism. My Gaza that has been exhausted by poverty and isolation was also subject to three deadly wars within less than a decade by the Israeli occupation whose forces are armed to the teeth with weapons of mass destruction, paid for by US tax payers. And the world again blames me for fighting back with my very humble and often-laughed-at, hand-made weapons. Tens of my people are being killed on a daily basis and I’m watching my childhood and youth wasted in pain and utter misery and the world is still labeling me a terrorist. I am a terrorist because I fight for my basic rights which everyone else is taking for granted without shedding a single drop of blood and without being dehumanised. Twenty-seven days of my short life were

robbed from what are supposed to be the most beautiful years of my life. I spent them watching my loved ones getting killed because they were not human enough in the eyes of the world and I will spend many more years recovering from the war trauma instead of building my career. If I don’t survive this war, I would like the world to know that I have never seen a rocket nor stored any in my house. Rest assured that I was not used as a human shield! As I am writing this article, my mother told my father that we are out of cooking gas, knowing that we have been out of water and power for days now. I still have not figured out what crime I have committed to endure this kind of wretchedness. I wonder what being human feels like. Maisam Abumorr is a graduate of English Literature, a current student of Translation (high diploma) and Political Science and Media (BA) in the Islamic University of Gaza, a blogger and a body language trainer.

Celebrations of Pakistan

Pakistan’s calendar features a great many festivals, both purely cultrual and also religious. Others are in memory of National Heroes or commemorate political events in the nation’s recent history. Muslim festivals are celebrated according to Muslim (Lunar) Calendar and may occur some 10 days earlier each successive Christian Year. There are several folk and festivals held regularly in every part of the country. Exact dates of such festivals are fixed annually by the District Administration of the respective area, at least a month in advance, according to the tradition. Pakistan’s main festivals are: 1 . Eid-ul-Fitr Religious festival celebrating end of fasting month on 1st of Shawwal, the 10th month of Islamic Calendar. Special prayer after sun-rise, exchange of sweet dishes, visits. 2. Eid-ul-Azha Religious festival commemorating the great sacrifice offered by Prophet Abraham. Celebrated on 10 Zilhaj,12th month of Islamic Calendar. Collective prayers after sun set, sacrifice of goats, sheep, cows or camels and distribution of meat among relatives, friends and poor. 3.Milad-un-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad, p.b.u.h. on 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal - the 3rd

Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society hosted a Grand Eid Celebration event Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society hosted a Grand Eid Celebration event at the Royal Banquet Palace on Monday August 4th. In keeping with the Society’s mandate and it’s tradition of attaching it’s events to worthy causes, the evening was used to raise funds for the victims of Gaza. Representatives from Islamic Relief- a charitable organization conducting relief work in Gaza- attended the event and presented a slide show to highlight the suffering in Gaza and the need for funds to provide urgent relief for the victims. A sold-out dinner and music event, the Eid celebration was attended by 300. PCWS ensured that the event catered to children as well as adults. A magician entertained the children with his tricks while face painting and balloon art kept them

happy all evening. Tabrez, a popular Vancouver singer accompanied by Kareem on the keyboard, graciously offered his talent for the fundraiser and kept the audience entertained through the evening with his beautiful voice. Through donations from sponsors and attendees as well as raffle draws, PCWS was able to raise $6600 for Gaza.

At its simplest, Pakistani cooking today consists of staple foods which are cheap and abundant. Wheat and other flour products is the mainstay of the diet, one familiar form being CHAPATI, unleavened bread akin to a Mexican tortilla. This is made with dough prepared from whole wheat flour. Another basic food is LASSI, milk from which curds and butterfat have been removed. Vegetables, usually seasonal, lentils are commonly used. Families with larger incomes eat more meat eggs, and fruits. And the more affluent cook with GHEE, which is clarified butter, instead of with vegetable oil. From the earliest times, the imaginative and sometimes heavy - use of spices, herbs, seeds, and flavorings and seasonings have helped cooks transform rather ordinary staple foods into an exotic cuisine. Consider some of the most common of these in wide use in Pakistan today: chilli powder, turmeric, garlic, paprika, black pepper, red pepper, cumin seed, bay leaf, coriander, cardamom, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, saffron, mace, nutmeg, poppy seeds, aniseed, almonds, pistachios, and yogurt. Their use in a wide range of pickles, chutneys, preserves, and sauces, together with curries of all descriptions and special treatment for meats, sea, food, vegetables and lentils, gives Pakistani cooking much of its distinctive character. Cultural influences, whether religious precepts, practices, and ceremonies or local traditions, or even esthetic preferences, have made their contribution toward the evolution of Pakistani cuisine. The Influence of Islam The spread of Islam to what is now Pakistan, starting in the Eighth Century, has given a basic character to the food of the people. The Quranic injunctions against eating pork or drinking alcoholic beverages has channeled tastes and appetites in other directions.

Lamb, beef, chicken and fish are basic foods, although their consumption by persons of low income is modest and often ceremonial. Some of the Muslim feasts involve special dishes. Eid-ul-Adha, which commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to obey God even to the point of being willing to sacrifice his son, is observed by the sacrifice of a goat, a lamb, or a cow from which special dishes are made. On Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of RAMADAN, the month of fasting in the Islamic Calendar, the serving of a special dessert of vermicelli cooked in milk is a must. Almond and pistachios are added as decorations as is the silver foil. The latter is so thin that it will disintegrate unless it is immediately transferred from the protective layers of paper onto the dish. Food and The Moghul Emperors A style of cookery called Moghlai’ evolved at the Moghul court and even today it remains centered in Lahore. Some latter-day and widely known survivors of court cookery are, for example, chicken tandoori, a dish in which chicken is cooked at low temperatures in special ovens called TANDOORS, and murgh musallum’ in which the whole chickens are roasted with special spices and ingredients. SHAHI TUKRA, a dessert of sliced bread, milk, cream, sugar and saffron, is another left-over from the days of the Moghuls. Fruit drinks, squeezed from pomegranates, apples, melons, and mangoes, and called SHARBAT, are an important part of the Moghlai cuisine and, indeed, the inspiration for American “sherberts.” Ceremonial occasions such as weddings have inspired a number of fancy dishes. A traditional dish at marriage feasts, for example, is chicken curry with either PILAU or Biryani. Firini, made from cream of rice and milk, is an equally traditional wedding dessert. It is served in clay saucers topped by silver foil.

Being Assertive!

By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor As we all tend to get busy with our daily lifestyles, there are definitely times when we focus very less towards our communications styles. Being assertiveness can help you control stress and anger and improve your coping skills. It also helps to recognize and learn assertive behavior and certain communication techniques. Being assertive is a core communication skill. It means that you express yourself effectively and stand up for your point of view while also respecting the rights and beliefs of others. Assertiveness can also help boost your self-esteem and earn others’ respect. It can help with stress management, especially if you tend to take on too many responsibilities because you have a hard time saying no or responding to certain situations. Some people seem to be naturally assertive, which makes their communication very clear and direct while also being conscious of others feelings. But if you’re not one of them, you can learn to be more assertive. As assertiveness is based on mutual respect, it’s an effective and diplomatic

communication style. Being assertive shows that you respect yourself because you’re willing to stand up for your interests and express your thoughts and feelings. It also demonstrates that you’re aware of the rights of others and are willing to work on resolving conflicts. Of course, it’s not just what you say — your message — but also how you say it that’s important. Assertive communication is direct and respectful. Being assertive gives you the best chance of successfully delivering your message. If you communicate in a way that’s too passive or too aggressive, your message may get lost because people are too busy reacting to your delivery!! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Switching jobs: the right choice?

Anisha Sahijwala, Today’s professionals believe that success comes through frequently switching jobs. While most consider a job switch as a pathway to success, this is not necessarily the case. Sticking to a job for a long time proves beneficial to both, an employee and the company. Today, a number of companies spend a significant amount of time and money in recruiting the right candidate and training them on the job. While professionals usually consider their remuneration as the only income they receive, they often forget that a considerable amount of money has also been invested in training them, something they wouldn’t individually invest in. Switching jobs once in a while can be justified for a junior level employee. However, senior employees would grow comparatively faster when they stick to the job in comparison to job hoppers. An employee is recognised in the market not only by his work, but also by his association with a brand and his professional approach throughout his/ her career. This is often overlooked when there are lucrative offers in hand. Tempted by a small hike in salary, professionals often switch jobs, without giving the employer sufficient notice period and a valid reason. This can seriously malign a professional’s reputation in the corporate world. It is hence wise to stay in a job and keep your professional image intact, than earn a little extra at the cost of your reputation in the industry. Most corporate test employees for a fixed duration of time, post which a salary hike and a better designation are given. A common mistake that most employees make is comparing only the salary component when deciding to switch. While money is an important point to consider, one must also take into account the power they have within the organisation, the work culture, the expertise they are gaining and the overall atmosphere of the workplace before they decide to move on. Most companies consider long-term employees for senior managerial positions since they have been with the company for a long time and their dedication towards the

mission of the brand is well placed. As you grow in an organisation, you master technical skills that in turn, increase your market value. Neel Naik, Copywriter, Leo Burnett Professionals across industries usually prefer sticking to their comfort zone. With their daily routine in place, professionals often prefer to continue in a given role at their old workplace. However, with extensive competition in the corporate world, it is important for careerminded professionals to change jobs. So as difficult as it may be to leave, hanging on to a job can sometimes prove to be far more detrimental. Switching jobs makes you an encyclopedia. With each new job, you grow, learn new things and gather invaluable experiences. Hence, apart from the professional learning, you get smarter at resolving conflicts with difficult colleagues and learn to tackle a tough boss. Frequent changes also help you easily adapt to new situations, environments and people. As a result, you do not stress every time something changes professionally. Most people usually hit a dead-end if they stick to a job for too long. Hence, switching jobs helps you get back on track. A job change brings with it a fresh beginning. It is akin to opening a whole new page in your professional life. A new job means new challenges, and in turn more productivity and enthusiasm. Additionally, a switch in job also helps you network. Lastly, everyone looks for a pay hike and a better designation. When switching jobs, not only do professionals gain diverse work experience, but also a salary hike and sometimes a promotion.

A Brother like That

By Fatima Nadeem, Surrey Shuaib received an automobile from his brother as an Ramadhan Eid present. On Ramadhan Eid day when Shuaib came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. “Is this your car, Uncle?” he asked. Shuaib nodded. “My brother gave it to me for Ramadhan Eid.” The boy was astounded.”You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? Boy, I wish...” He hesitated. Of course Shuaib knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Shuaib all the way down to his heels. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Shuaib looked at the boy in astonishment, and then impulsively he added, “Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?” “Oh yes, I would love that.”After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, “Uncle, would you mind driving in front of my house?” Shuaib smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Shuaib was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two

steps are?” the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Shuaib heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.”There she is, uncle, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Ramadhan Eid and it did not cost him a penny. And some day I’m gonna give you one just like it...then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Shop windows that I have been trying to tell you about.”Shuaib got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Ramadhan Eid, Shuaib learned what Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) meant when he had said: “love for your brother what you love for yourself”.

Study: Sleeping habits affect ethics

Do you consider yourself an ethical person? Chances are you answered “yes.” But new research suggests that our ability to act honestly in a given situation depends, in part, on the time of day. A study forthcoming in the journal Psychological Science finds that early-risers, or “larks,” are more likely to act dishonestly in the late evening hours. Night owls, on the other hand, exhibit a tendency toward ethical lapses early in the morning. Most of us are hard-wired to go to sleep and wake up at certain times of day. Some of us go to bed early to wake up early, while others prefer to stay up late and wake up late. Many of us fall somewhere in between. Researchers refer to this preference for sleep times as our “chronotype.” Chronotype is “largely determined genetically,” explains Sunita Sah, one of the authors of the Psychological Science study. “But it can change over time. Teenagers and students might find their chronotype shifts as they get older.” But it’s quite difficult to deliberately reset your body’s sleep clock in a short period of time, as any new parent knows. Sah and her colleagues found that this internal clock also affects our ability to behave ethically at different times of day. To make a long research short — when we’re tired, we tend to fudge things and cut corners. Sah measured this by finding out the chronotypes of 140 people via a standard selfassessment questionnaire, and then asking them to complete a task in which they rolled dice to win raffle tickets — higher rolls, more tickets. Participants were randomly assigned to either early-morning or late-

evening sessions. Crucially, the participants self-reported their dice rolls. You’d expect the dice rolls to average out to around 3.5. So the extent to which a group’s average exceeds this number is a measure of their collective result-fudging. “Morning people tended to report higher die-roll numbers in the evening than the morning, but evening people tended to report higher numbers in the morning than the evening,” Sah and her co-authors wrote. These results “cast doubt on the stereotype that evening people are somehow dissolute,” the authors conclude — early risers are just as likely to cheat when taken out of their temporal comfort zone. These findings have pretty big implications for the workplace. For one, they suggest that the 9-to-5 schedule is practically an invitation to ethical lapses. “Employers could consider this when creating their own work structures,” Sah says. “They might want to think about flex time, about matching individuals with what’s best for them.” For individual workers, the take-home message is “know thy chronotype, know thyself.” Schedule your most challenging tasks for the times of day when you know you’ll be most alert. Alternatively, if you’re feeling Machiavellian, you could put off your difficult tasks until you’re tired and exhausted, knowing that you’ll fudge your way through them with ease. “One of the important points the study really reflects is that good people can make unethical decisions,” Sah says. “Ethics are not a stable characteristic over time.” Source: The Washington Post

26 25 S P O R T S 6 Donetsk soccer players refuse to Pakistani Hockey Team legendary Player Islahuddin visits Surrey join team in Ukraine Shawaal 11, 1435 August 8, 2014

Six South Americans -- five Brazilians and one Argentine -- have refused to return to Ukraine to play for their football club in the troubled city of Donetsk, risking possible fines and suspensions for breach of contract. The players remained in France following Ukrainian league champion Shakhtar Donetsk’s friendly against Lyon on Saturday. The Ukrainian military is attempting to retake Donetsk in the east of the country from pro-Russian rebels. “If they don’t come then in the first instance they will suffer,” the club’s billionaire owner, Rinat Akhmetov, said in a statement Monday on the Shakhtar website. Refusing to fulfil their contracts could cost the players “tens of millions of euros” in compensation payments to the club, he warned. The players did not return with the team for Tuesday’s Ukrainian Super Cup against Dynamo Kyiv, which will be played in the western city of Lviv. Akhmetov is Ukraine’s richest man and a leading power-broker in the east of the country, where his companies employ hundreds of thousands of people. He has publicly opposed the rebels and earlier this month pleaded with Ukrainian forces not to bomb Donetsk. The Ukrainian Football Federation has yet to rule where Shakhtar will play its home games while the conflict rages. Akhmetov has expressed a preference for the mostly Russian-speaking city of Kharkiv in the northeast. “We aren’t going to take risks and in no way will we take players to somewhere that is dangerous,” he said. Donetsk city centre is about 60 kilometres from the crash site of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down Thursday with nearly 300 people on board. The six missing players include two of Shakhtar’s key Brazilian midfielders, Alex Teixeira and Douglas Costa, as well as Argentine striker Facundo Ferreyra. The others Brazilians are Ismaily, Fred and Dentinho. “I don’t rule out that these players will return to the club soon,” Akhmetov said, adding that several could arrive Monday and that the club would not seek to sell them. Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu accused the players’ agent, Kia Joorabchian, of being behind their deci-

sion to stay in France. Lucescu told French newspaper L’Equipe that Joorabchian, who is also the agent for Juventus forward Carlos Tevez, convinced the players not to return to Ukraine after telling them they would be able to sign new contracts with other clubs. “It’s a true scandal,” Lucescu said. “He took advantage from the situation to abduct them.” Argentine striker Sebastian Blanco has also refused to return to his Ukrainian club, Metalist Kharkiv, ahead of the new season, according to local media. FIFA can impose strict penalties in breach of contract cases. Players can be suspended for four months and clubs can face a oneyear transfer embargo which prevents them from registering and fielding any new signings. As Ukrainian champion, Shakhtar has qualified for the group stage of this season’s Champions League. The Ukrainian Premier League season starts on Friday. The league has been reduced from 16 teams to 14 after its two Crimean clubs withdrew at the end of last season following Russia’s annexation of the peninsula. Besides Shakhtar, three other teams -- Metalurh Donetsk, Olimpik Donetsk and Zorya Luhansk -- are based in cities controlled by rebels. They will use stadiums in other cities because of the conflict. Another club, Illichivets Mariupol, is based in a city claimed by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic but under Ukrainian government control. New Crimean clubs have been created since the Russian takeover but have yet to be admitted into the Russian league system. Last week, UEFA announced it would keep Ukrainian and Russian clubs from playing each other “until further notice” because of the continuing unrest. The ruling meant that Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg and Ukrainian club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk cannot be paired against each other in the Champions League qualifying draw. But UEFA said the turmoil would not prevent matches from being played at home by Dnipro and Chornomorets Odesa. UEFA also said a security assessment showed that Lviv and Kyiv can continue to host matches. Source: CTV News

Last week, Mr. Islahuddin Siddique , a legendary Field Hockey Player from Pakistan visited British Columbia. He and his family were guests of Mr. Sajid Hameed in Surrey. He had been invited as a special guest by Mr & Mrs. Liaqat Ali Bajwa at their Eid Family Dinner at Nirala Sweets and Restaurant in Surrey on August 3rd. Mr Naseer Pirzada was asked by Mr. Bajwa to introduce the guest. Mr Pirzada said that we are very lucky to have a great Hockey player of Pakistan among us. He briefly described Mr. Islahuddin ‘s early life who was born in 1948 in Meerut, India. He was a Right winger from Pakistan, who led Pakistan to Hockey World Cup glory in 1978. Not only did Pakistan win the World Cup in 1978 under his leadership but it completed a grand slam by winning the Champions Trophy and an Asian Games(1970-74 &78) Gold medal as well. A forward, Islahuddin Siddique played between 1967 and 1979. He played total 130 Hockey test matches and scored 117 goals. He won Silver in the 1972 Olympics and Bronze in the 1976 Olympics. Islahuddin also won the 1971 World Cup as a Captain and runner-up in the 1975 and 1978 World Cups. The Govt of Pakistan has given him Pride of Performance Award in 1982 and Sitar-eImtiaz in 2007. After his retirement from the sport he has been associated with hockey as

a coach, manager and chairman selection committee of the National team along with being a commentator and member of the FIH rules board. The guests applauded the accomplishments of Mr. Islahuddin after which Mr Pirzada presented a skit with him. He did a parody commentary of famous S. M. Naqi (Hockey match commentator) for final world cup Hockey match with India and Pakistan in Bangkok 1978 under this great player`s Captainship. During Pirzada’s running commentary he invited Mr. Islahuddin to come out from the audience. As th guests applauded, Mr. Islahuddin not only joined Mr. Pirzada in action but also was the part of hockey commentary of this match. Mr. Pirzada played the role of Indian goal keeper where Pakistan won the match after Islahuddin ‘s winning Kick. Everyone admired the unique skit and Mr Islahuddin said that he had never imagined such a different style of welcome in BC. In his speech he told about his life events and thanked everyone including Pakistan Canada Association members and past Presidents. A recognition plaque was given to him from PCA and he gave his book “ DASH” to CUA President Mr. Mohammad Rafiq. At the end Mr. L.A. Bajwa thanked everyone who joined him for this family Eid dinner.
