Israel seizes most West Bank land in 30 years Residents of Wadi Fukin have grown accustomed to the sounds of construction. This lush village, which sits just west of Bethlehem along the Green Line, is surrounded on three sides by Israeli settlements that are constantly growing. Dotted with olive trees and natural springs, the village of 1,200 people is known for its harvest of organic turnips, cabbage and chili peppers. But this small community has borne the brunt of heavy settlement activity for many years. One of the Jewish settlements surrounding the village, Beitar Illit, is so large that it is one of only four settlements in the West Bank classified by Israel as a “city”. Sunday brought even more bad news for Palestinians here: Israeli authorities announced that nearly 400 hectares of land nearby - in what they refer to as the Etzion settlement bloc - are now “state land”. This means they are no longer privately owned by Palestinians, and therefore can be used for possible settlement construction. A settlement watchdog group, Peace Now, called the Israeli move the largest land-grab since the 1980s. Building here would ensure territorial continuity between the Green Line and the settlements

Marathon political activity on Wednesday night finally emanated hopeful signals regarding resolution of the present political impasses as respective government committees met the PTI and PAT delegations separately in the presence of the opposition’s parliamentary committee members as reported by Daily Times. The government committee did not talk to media after the meeting with PTI, but the PTI leaders seemed hopeful about “some” positive outcome on Thursday. Meanwhile, the PAT-government separate meeting under the supervision of JI chief Sirajul Haq-led jirga made some headway as far as vacation of parliament lawns by its workers was concerned, but it could not make any breakthrough on the demand that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif should resign after the registration of Model Town killings FIR against him. “We are hopeful of coming up with some solution to the dialogue process by Thursday (today),” PTI committee member Asad Umar told media after the meeting with the government committee and opposition’s parliamentary committee headed by JI Amir Sirajul Haq. The government committee, which met PTI and Sirajul Haq-led jirga at the residence of PTI leader Jahangir Tareen, was

headed by Senior Minister Ishaq Dar and included Ahsan Iqbal and Javed Shafi. “The negotiations are progressing,” said PTI leader Arif Alvi, as another committee member, Shafqat Mahmood, noted: “The meeting with the government committee will continue on Thursday as well.” The PTI delegation was led by Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and included Jahangir Tareen, Arif Alvi, Asad Umar and Shafqat Mahmood. The PAT-government-opposition parliamentary leaders committee meanwhile met separately at PPP leader Rehman Malik’s residence. “We have decided to continue with the dialogue process and will not indulge into details for now,” Ahsan Iqbal told media after the meeting. “We want to continue with the talks to make them result-oriented and meaningful...we will keep on talking till we find a solution,” PAT President Dr Raheek Abbasi told media after the talks. Sirajul Haq termed it a good sign that things are removing towards ending the deadlock in the dialogue. 910 Militants Killed During Zarb-e-Azb Operation So Far: ISPR

The military offensive in North Waziristan, Zarb-e-Azb, is successfully underway as 910 local and foreign militants have been killed since its commencement in mid-June 15, reported by Pakistan Tribune. According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistan Army, security forc-

es have cleared the areas of Mir Ali, Datta Khel, Degan, Miranshah and Boya from militants. An 88 km long Road, Khajuri-Mirali-MiranshahDattakhel and Road Ghariom-Jhallar in North Waziristan have also been cleared. 82 soldiers have embraced martyrdom during Zarb-e-Azb operation while 269 have sustained injured, the ISPR release stated. As many as 27 landmine manufacturing factories, one ammunition and one rocket manufacturing factory have also been destroyed. A whopping stockpile of arms and ammunition and communication equipment used by the militants were also destroyed during the operation. ISRP release stated that more than 2,274 counterterrorism operations, based on intelligence information, were carried out across the country to foil any backlash of military offensive. During these operations 42 terrorists were killed and 114 arrested.

Traders seek early solution to political crisis

The capital’s business community has sought early solution to the lingering political crisis. In a meeting held here on Wednesday at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), traders said business activities had almost come to a halt. “Both sides should make serious efforts to resolve this crisis through dialogue to save the country from further damage,” the ICCI members said after the meeting. They said not only were business activities getting affected in Blue Area, Aabpara Market and other centres of the capital, but industrial production had also suffered. “The worst sufferers of the prevailing crisis were the traders of Islaambad,” ICCI President Shaban Khalid said,

adding that “even the daily wage workers were under financial stress.” The businessmen said due to the current protests and sitins, cargo was stranded at Karachi Port, and the supply chain upcountry had been disturbed. As a result, many cities were facing shortage of supplies. The meeting demanded that political leaders should put their heads together and find an amicable solution as any further delay would have strategic implications for the country. The ICCI’s vice-president, Khalid Chaudhry, said political stability was an essential requirement for growth of business activities and economic development as no investor would invest in an uncertain political environment.

UN body to probe Islamic State crimes in Iraq

The UN Human Rights Council has unanimously agreed to send an emergency mission to Iraq to investigate Islamic State (IS) atrocities, as Baghdad warned the country was “facing a terrorist monster”. The 47 members of the United Nations’ top rights body reached their decision on Monday after spending the day listening to details of horrendous abuses and crimes attributed to the group calling itself the Islamic State, including massacres, forced conversions, abductions, slavery, sexual violence and the use of children as soldiers and suicide bombers. “We are facing a terrorist monster,” Iraqi Human Rights Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani told the council, decrying acts “equivalent to genocide and crimes against humanity”. The special session was called at Baghdad’s request, with support from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - among other countries. “The reports we have received reveal acts of inhumanity on an unimaginable scale,” deputy UN rights chief Flavia Pansieri told diplomats from the 47 member states as she opened the emergency session. The IS has grabbed large swathes of Iraq’s Sunni heartland since June 9. It has also occupied parts of Syria and declared a “caliphate” in a region straddling the two countries. The group has shocked the world with filmed massacres and beheadings. “The stories that have

emerged from IS’s bloody assault on Iraq are the ones of nightmares,” US ambassador told the UN rights body, insisting it was “critically important that the council responds”. The resolution adopted on Monday condemned “in the strongest possible terms systematic violations and abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law resulting from the terrorist acts committed by IS and associated groups”. It called on the office of the UN’s new High Commissioner for Human Rights, Jordan’s Prince Zeid alHussein, who will officially be sworn in on Thursday, to dispatch investigators to Iraq. The fact-finding mission will count 11 investigators who should make it to Iraq within the next couple of weeks, a spokesman for the UN human rights office said. Russian representative Alexey Borodavkin meanwhile did not pull any punches, blaming the rise of IS on countries helping the opposition fight Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government. “The current tragedy in Iraq is clear proof of the fact that the unlawful, external interference leading to the destruction of statehood do not give rise to democracy,” he said. At least 1,420 people were killed in the country last month alone, according to fresh UN numbers issued on Monday, while more than 1.8 million people have fled their homes since the beginning of the year. of Beitar Illit, Kfar Etzion, and Gevaot, and would help link West Bank settlements such as Gush Etzion directly with Jerusalem, cutting off Palestinian access in the process. “The land is very close to the border and ... is a very strategic area,” said Yariv Oppenheimer, general director of Peace Now. “For Israelis it will connect some of the settlements into south Jerusalem, and for Palestinians it’s land that can allow them to expand villages around Bethlehem also south to Jerusalem.” Last year the government invited bids for the building of 1,000 new settlement units on the site known as Gevaot. Construction there, Israel said, did not constitute a new settlement because Gevaot has been designated as a neighbourhood of Alon Shvut, an existing settlement several kilometres down the road. “We were surprised early this morning to find the Israeli civil administration and military handing out warning slips and putting up signs declaring the appropriation of more than 2,000 dunams [200 hectares] for the expansion of three settlements that surround the village,” said Ahmad Sukkar, head of the Wadi Fukin village council. Israel says that the land - from Beit Furik and the nearby villages of Surif, Husan and al-Jabaa - is slated to be part of its own borders in any permanent solution it reaches with the Palestinians in the future. “How is it possible that this is state land?” said Mohammad Assaf, a village resident. “I inherited this plot of land from my father, and him from my grandfather. We already live in a prison that prevents us from expanding for population or agricultural needs.” Washington slammed as the move as “counterproductive” to peace efforts, which have been put on hold by Israel since Palestinians signed 15 international human rights treaties and Fatah and Hamas forged a unity pact in April. Talks were also suspended as Israel launched a 50-day military offensive in Gaza which claimed the lives of some 2,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians; and 71 Israelis, most of them soldiers. “This announcement, like every other settlement announcement Israel makes ... is counterproductive to Israel’s

stated goal of a negotiated two-state solution with the Palestinians,” a US State Department official said. “We urge the government of Israel to reverse this decision.” The Israeli military gave no reason for the move announced on Sunday. A spokesman for the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories only confirmed that “according to the instructions of the political leadership at the end of the operation ‘Brother’s Keeper’, [we] started the process of declaring around 4,000 dunams at Gevaot in the Etzion region as state lands”. Israel Radio, however, said the move was a response to the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli settler teenagers who were hitchhiking in the occupied West Bank in June. Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said the move affects Israel negatively as it embarks on a post-Gaza-war diplomatic campaign. Similarly, Peace Now’s Oppenheimer said the move does not support moderate Palestinian forces who are actively seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict. This Israeli move has cast a spotlight once more on land confiscations and settlement expansion in the West Bank, which the US partially blamed for the breakdown in talks between Palestinians and Israelis earlier this year. “Under the cover of its latest campaign of aggression in Gaza, Israel pursued a stepped-up campaign of violence [and] settlement expansion [in the West Bank],” said Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi. “Today’s announcement clearly represents Israel’s deliberate intent to wipe out any Palestinian presence on the land and to wilfully impose a de facto one-state solution,” she added. Meanwhile, residents of Wadi Fukin and the nearby villages have 45 days to appeal in an attempt to stop this land-grab. “In 1948, we had 12,000 dunams [12 square kilometres] of agricultural land,” Sukkar said. “Today that number has dwindled to 2,600 [dunams]. We are only allowed to farm on 250 dunams of those. That’s why we will go to the [Israeli] courts. We will not stand idly as Israel carves up and snatches our land.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Obama under fire over foreign policy

President Barack Obama has come under renewed criticism over his foreign policy from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers as he wrestled with crises in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Ukraine. Republican lawmakers on Sunday seized on Obama’s comment earlier this week when he said, “We don’t have a strategy yet” for confronting the Islamic State group, saying it suggested indecisiveness. Also on Sunday, influential Democrats chimed in with their own critiques of Obama’s foreign policy, chiding him for being “too cautious” on Syria, and urging him to do more to help Ukraine resist Russian advances. “I’ve learned one thing about this president, and that is he’s very cautious. Maybe, in this instance, too cautious,” Democrat Dianne Feinstein, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told US TV network NBC when asked about Obama’s comments about dealing with Islamic State fighters. Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, cautioned that any US action in Syria had to be carefully calibrated to avoid inadvertently supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad. But he joined Republicans in urging Obama to provide more than just “non-lethal” aid to the Ukrainian government as it resisted Russian forces. “We should be more forceful when supporting the Ukrainian government,” Smith told CBS TV network. “I think it’s appropriate to up that aid to make them a more capable fighting force, to resist this incursion.” The critical comments came as the Obama administration faced myriad crises around the world, including a reported attack on an annex to the US embassy in Tripoli, Libya. In response to the criticism of Obama’s comment on the lack of a strategy, White House officials said it reflected the fact that the Pentagon was still

developing options for possible military action in Syria. US officials emphasised that the administration does have a broader strategy, and the military plan is only one element. The lawmakers statements reflect growing concern about potential homeland security threats posed by hundreds of US, British and Canadian citizens who have trained to fight in Syria. But Obama may still have trouble winning support from a deeply divided Congress for expanded military action against the Islamic State. “His foreign policy is in absolute freefall,” said Representative Mike Rogers, who heads the House Intelligence Committee. “This ‘don’t do stupid stuff’ policy isn’t working,” Republican Senator John McCain said US action against Islamic State would require more US special operations forces, more air controllers; more advisers to train the Iraqi military, which was near collapse; and other countries to partner with. But McCain said Obama was having trouble building a coalition to take action against Islamic State fighters after backing away from strikes against Syria last year. “These people ... are very cynical, particularly the Saudis and others, because we said we were going to strike Syria, and then the president reversed himself without even telling them.” Source: Al-Jazeera

NATO planning new highreadiness force to counter Russian aggression

NATO leaders this week will be asked to approve creation of a high-readiness force and the stockpiling of military equipment and supplies in Eastern Europe to help protect member nations there against potential Russian aggression, the alliance’s secretary general said Monday. “The Readiness Action Plan will ensure that we have the right forces and the right equipment in the right place, at the right time,” Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. “Not because NATO wants to attack anyone. But because the dangers and the threats are more present and more visible. And we will do what it takes to defend our allies.” President Barack Obama and leaders of NATO’s other member countries open a summit meeting Thursday in Wales that is expected to be dominated by how the U.S-led alliance should react over the long term to Russian actions toward Ukraine and the implications for security in Europe. At a pre-summit news conference, Rasmussen said alliance officials have drafted a detailed plan that “responds to Russia’s aggressive behaviour” but also equips NATO to respond to all security challenges, wherever they may arise. At its core: a proposed new force that Rasmussen said could be composed of several thousand troops contributed on a rotating basis by the 28 NATO countries. Backed by air and naval assets, the unit would be a “spearhead” that could

be deployed at very short notice to help NATO members defend themselves, Rasmussen said. Since the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula by Russia in March, Poland and other Eastern European members of NATO have demanded the alliance take a more active and high-profile role in their defence. Other allies, though, have been wary of doing anything that might endanger a 1997 agreement with Moscow under which NATO pledged not to base substantial numbers of soldiers in Eastern Europe on a permanent basis. The compromise the NATO leadership appear to have worked out is the pre-positioning of equipment and supplies in Eastern Europe so the new highreadiness force “can travel light, but strike hard if needed,” in Rasmussen’s words. Airfields and seaports in the region could also be upgraded to permit their use by the force, Rasmussen said. Another senior NATO official, briefing reporters on condition he not be identified by name, said the new high-readiness force would be expected to deploy to any alliance member country within 48 hours. The “spearhead” unit is one of a dozen measures NATO officials are proposing to deal with a fast-changing and riskier global security environment to the alliance’s east and south, the senior official said. Omar Khadr reattempts to sue Canada for $20M

Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Omar Khadr tries again Wednesday to expand his civil lawsuit against the federal government to include a claim that Canada conspired with the United States for what he says was the abuse of his rights and torture. The proposed $20-million action foundered last December when Federal Court Judge Richard Mosley ruled the amended lawsuit, initially filed in 2004, needed to be rewritten before it could proceed on its merits. A key issue is whether Mosley will now allow Khadr to press his conspiracy claim — a cause of action the federal government says should not be available to him. In essence, Khadr wants to argue that Canada conspired with the U.S. in breaching his charter rights when intelligence agents went down to Guantanamo Bay to interview him in 2003 and 2004. The conspiracy claim — if successful — would tie Canada’s conduct to that of the United States. “A conspiratorial claim (would make) Canada liable for the torture that was committed by the States,” Khadr’s lawyer, John Phillips, said in an interview Tuesday. “I want Canada liable for the torture.” None of the allegations has been proven in court. The U.S. government has denied Khadr was seriously abused or tortured. Documents show the RCMP was building a terrorism-related case against the Toronto-born Khadr at a time the Americans were developing war-crimes charges against him. American authorities allowed Canadian agents access to him at the Guantanamo prison only if they shared any intelligence they gained, which they did, the documents show. Khadr was never told he was the target of a criminal probe in Canada or about the information-sharing deal. Following that agreement, Khadr’s military captors subjected him among other things to sleep-deprivation — known as the “frequent flyer” program — to soften him up for interrogation by Canadian authorities, something Mosley acknowledged when he refused to shut the door to the conspiracy claim. Mosley also noted that Federal Court would not have to pass judgment on the le-

gality of what the U.S. did to Khadr, but on whether Canada’s agreement with the Americans to share information to be used in prosecuting him was legal. If Mosley rules the conspiracy claim can proceed, Khadr’s lawyers say it would likely pave the way for the production of documents that could help him in his suit and in his quest for damages. Khadr, who turns 28 later this month, was 15 years old when the Americans arrested him in July 2002 following a brutal firefight in which he was horrifically injured and an American special forces soldier was killed. He ultimately pleaded guilty to five war crimes — including murder in violation of the law of war — before a widely maligned military commission in October 2010 and was sentenced to a further eight years. He transferred to Canadian custody in September 2012 and later said his guilty plea was a desperate act to get out of American custody. He is currently incarcerated in the Bowden Institution in Innisfail, Alta. Ottawa insists he’s an unrepentant, hardened terrorist. Meanwhile, Khadr has yet to find an American lawyer willing to defend him against a $45-million US lawsuit filed in Utah in May by the widow of the U.S. special forces soldier killed in Afghanistan and another American soldier blinded by a grenade. That leaves open the possibility of a default judgment against him. It remains far from clear, however, whether Canadian courts would enforce any such judgment. Source: CBC News

B.C. students fear for university applications

As students in most of Canada enjoy their last few moments of their summer break, students in British Columbia still don’t know when they will be returning to the classroom. The B.C. government and the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) are still very far apart on many issues and the two sides have no current plans for further negotiation to end the dispute that has been going on since the middle of June. But while the two sides battle for public support, students say they feel like they are caught in the middle – and the students with arguably the most to lose are those entering Grade 12. “I’m sure senior students have so many questions right now – whether we’ll be qualified for university, whether we’ll get our applications in on time,” Grade 12 student and Vancouver School Board Student Trustee Jing Wang told CTV News Channel Monday. “I’m sure those questions linger in every senior student’s mind right now.” If the strike lingers on for months it could have a disastrous effect on university applications, especially if students are hoping to go outside the province and will have to compete with students who have been in school for the entire year. Embittered after a summer of no results, Wang and others are now taking matters into their own hands. They are organizing a Save Our Students rally to “show the BCTF and the BCPSEA that we are frustrated with the strike, and want a quick resolution,” according to the website. “Our focus is to raise awareness on the student perspective of the dispute,” Wang said. “Student voice has been buried for so long and we really want to tell both parties that we’re worried

B.C. teachers’ strike: Union rejects premier’s demand to suspend strike

TransLink exec salaries rise despite supposed ‘freeze’ TransLink executives are coming under fire from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation for continued pay increases. The Lower Mainland transit authority issued its 2013 salary disclosure documents last Friday afternoon and it shows many executives receiving “record-breaking pay”, according to the CTF. “If that’s a pay freeze, sign me up,” said CTF B.C. Director Jordan Bateman in a release. “Only in TransLink’s crazy world a pay freeze mean a pay raise.” Executive compensation rose in 2013 over 2012 despite declarations from TransLink’s chair that pay levels had been frozen and bonuses eliminated. The agency’s top paid employee last year was its CEO Ian Jarvis who made $422,406 in salary and bonuses last year, which is a seven per cent increase over 2012. CTV News requested an interview with Jarvis but was told he was unavailable. “I don’t think the CEO needs to stand up and defend his salary.” said, Colleen Brennan TransLink’s Vice President of Communications. “I think the board made a decision on the CEO’s salary. The board’s decision stands and that’s what we’re here to talk about today.” Four other TransLink officials saw their pay rise

between $25 and $50 thousand. The CTF says a total of 434 people working at TransLink and its subsidiaries made more than $100,000 last year. “Anything that was earned was earned in 2012 as a short term incentive program was paid out in 2013 so when you see bonus, it was money that was earned in 2012,” said Bennan, referring to changes to its executive compensation plan that won’t affect the authority’s bottom line until the current fiscal year. The coming decreases in pay range from approximately $20,000 to $40,000 per executive, according to TransLink. Source: CTV News

and we’re frustrated that nothing is being solved at the moment. And it’s really our education on the line.” Wang said students often feel left out of the loop and they want their voice back in the equation. The rally will begin Tuesday at 2 p.m. outside the Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver. B.C. Education Minister Peter Fassbender confirmed Sunday classes will not begin Tuesday, affecting more than 40,000 teachers and half a million students. The government has promised parents $40 per day as a childcare subsidy for children 12 and under. However, parents trying to sign up for the subsidy online have encountered error messages. The money is also expected to be paid out after the strike ends. Meanwhile, B.C. Premier Christy Clark sent out a series of tweets Sunday night blaming the BC Teachers’ Federation for the impasse. The move drew sharp criticism from some. BCTF President Jim Iker told CTV News the government isn’t showing flexibility. The union is calling for better wages and smaller class sizes, but the government says it can’t afford the demands. Source: CTV News

B.C. Premier Christy Clark waded into the B.C. teachers’ strike on Wednesday, calling on teachers to suspend their strike, reduce their demands and return to the bargaining table. But the president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation says it has no plans to suspend its strike. Jim Iker called a news conference following the premier’s address and accused the government of remaining entrenched, inflexible and unwilling to bargain. In her first news conference since classes were cancelled earlier this week, Premier Clark said Education Minister Peter Fassbender had been making a tremendous effort to resolve the contract dispute. “But I do also recognize there are no easy fixes for this and there are no shortcuts to making sure that we can achieve long-term

labour peace in the classroom for kids,” said Clark. Clark then took aim at several parts of the teachers’ demands, including wages and benefits, a $5,000 signing bonus, and what she called “unlimited massage.” “They are still demanding twice as much as other public sector workers have received,” said Clark. “The teachers union needs to come to the table with a proposal that is realistic.” Other public sector employees who work just as hard have settled for far less. They didn’t get a $5,000 signing bonus and they didn’t get unlimited massage and an extra day off each year.” Clark’s statement about massages is, in fact, a mistake. BCTF President Jim Iker says unlimited massages were never on the table. He says the union is asking for $500 to $700 for massages, not the $5,000 claimed by the premier.. “There was a proposal for $3,000 in massages for members who were in chronic pain,” Iker said, “and we had to take that off the table.” Clark then repeated several times that she expected a solution to the strike would have to come at the bargaining table — not from legislation or binding arbitration. “This dispute needs to be resolved at the bargaining table. It needs to be resolved by our negotiating teams,” said Clark. : CBC News

“Red Zone Episodes Not Over Yet”

Inqillab and Azadi Marches of 14th August changed into a prolonged “sit in.” Twenty days and nights in the red zone despite humidity, heat, and heavy rain is tough. Till Wednesday, September 03, 2014, there was no major breakthrough except some efforts were under way by the interested stakeholders for renewing talks for calming down the tense scenario, The leadership of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are in good friendly relationship; this unnerves the staus quo parties including the rulers and the friendly opposition. Today, the PTI chairman sent the Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi to clarify the PTI’s position before national assembly session; where he skilfully clarified the purpose of the ongoing sit-in outside the Parliament. “We are not here to burn the House but to save it,” he declared. “It is our duty to protect the Parliament but what kind of parliament?” He added, “There is a perception that there is a grand plan or a great script behind our protest, but PTI never was and never will be part of any great plan that will undermine the democracy and the Constitution of Pakistan.” To request the army to resolve political crisis was against the spirit of the Charter of Democracy,” he said while referring to the government’s request to the COAS General Raheel Sharif. He also criticized government’s handling of the crisis, adding that Islamabad was turned into Gaza as scores of people were killed and injured. He said that his party was ready to negotiate with the committee of opposition members, and only de-

manded transparent investigation of rigging in the last general election. (dawn.com) The most troubling: Democracy is a mechanism by which popular consent is obtained for policies favoring the rich. The question: If there are two or three political parties, and none of them carry integrity, yet one of them is voted to the office – so what’s good for the general public? Quite obviously, there is a limited choice for the electors to choose, hence, it’s a tricky game played skillfully by the crooks. In the name of democracy, the greedy politicians always manage to grab power for satisfying their selfish agendas. During the course of hot pursuit of gaining political power, pressure tactics and coercion is quite normal. The financially powerful elite tend to win through rigging. Winning national, mid-term or supplementary election is not a problem for the crooks, because they can buy votes at any price; the election staff is easily bought off to change the electoral defeat in to electoral victory all due to loop holes in the stinky system. The statement, democracy is of the people, by the people, for the people is inherently incomplete unless the people are allowed to have proper schooling whereby they become mentally powerful enough to politically judge between honest and crook candidates. Good thing is despite the vadairas’ dirty politics, the people all over including the remote areas are now slowly catching up and hopefully the genuine leadership will grow. An Open Letter to Premier Christy Clark:

By: Charlene Dobie Surrey School Trustee@charlenepdobie Dear Premier As a School Trustee in Surrey, the largest school district in British Columbia, I urge you to meet with Jim Iker, the President of the BCTF. As the Premier of this great Province, it is time to be the leader that you were elected to be. The students and families in Public Education need you to get a negotiated or mediated settlement as soon as possible, so that they can be back in the classroom where they belong. As I have told the many citizens who have emailed me, Public Education is the backbone of any community and the students the future of British Columbia. There is no future, if we do not give the students of today, the chance they need to be educated to their full potential. I am passionate about Public Education and it is a privilege to be a School Trustee and an Education Assistant in Public Education. I believe that if you and Minister Fassbender spent some time in the classroom, over an extended period, you would see the reality of working in Public Education. It is an exhilarating experience when you see a student

capital, but the army only is protecting inside the state buildings in the red zone. It is significant however, that the joint session has followed a army corps commanders meeting which had asked for things to be resolved quickly and through political means without the use of force. Sharif’s decision to call in the army in aid of the civilian authorities on the eve of the march has empowered the army more. On top of that, poor Sharif seems to have lost further credibility by misinforming the national assembly that the army chief was not asked to mediate. A statement by the ISPR contradicting the prime minister’s claim put Sharif into an embarrassing position. Indeed, the army is busy with its operation Zarb-e-Azb, yet the ‘sit in’ situation is fast slipping out of the government’s grip, because of its own fault of using Gullu Butts and ‘PTV takeover’ drama and disrupting the peaceful ‘PAT march’ towards the prime minister house. Excessive force including chemical gas and real bullets injuring and killing the marchers is inhumane. The army is interested in an expeditious resolve of the crisis by the government without using force. Nevertheless, the rulers are already on crutches provided by the desperate opposition leadership who in return are promised their turn after the current tenure is over. Taking turns is the only wish of the greedy politicians. Non delivery, sub standard governance and administrative paralysis don’t bother them; they rallied in NA to save the democratic system, yet the battle is far from over. For protecting their personal in-

achieve the next step in their development, whether that is in their intellectual, social, emotional or physical development. It is also heart wrenching when you see students who do not have the opportunity to reach their next goal because the resources or services are not there. I have seen how devastating is can be for students and families. The teachers, staff, administration do the best they can but there are times when we cannot do what we all know, is best. We need to see the funding for Public Education increased now, for the students and families of today and the future. I see on social media, hear on the radio and television many citizens weighing in on the current labour dispute and kudos to them for being engaged and concerned about what lies ahead in Public Education but the reality is that many of them are basing their comments on their experience from years gone by. Times have changed; the students who are entering Kindergarten today are very complex with more and more issues that need to be addressed. I fully support integration; we need to have the resources, services, teachers and support staff to make it work. All students deserve to become contributing members of our society, whatever that looks like for

them personally. In Surrey we have 169 languages spoken at home besides English, we have students who have never been to school because they were born in refugee camps, we have students who come from vulnerable families and have not had the stimulation in their early years, we have students with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, mental health issues and students who have been subjected to horrific trauma at a very young age whether that be in a war-torn country or right here in Canada. Of course, our typical students are here as well and they have needs too, the need to get an education in a very complex classroom. We welcome all these students and their families to Surrey and so we should because this is Canada, a democratic, multi-cultural, diverse nation. As I said previously, staff does the best they can with the funding we receive but we need more. Can you imagine being a teacher in a classroom in Surrey? I urge you to take sometime to think about it. Teachers are teachers because they want to help shape the future but when you have a class with such diversity, culturally and intellectually with dwindling resources, how can you make that happen? It is a daily burden that doesn’t go away when you leave your worksite. When you see a student coming to school hungry, when you don’t have the time

terests, the political elite ask for democracy. After the Musharraf Era, Zardari was only focused on completing his tenure which he successfully did by bringing all players including the friendly opposition under one umbrella; the zaradri regime continued right till the end despite its poor governance and its judicial defiance. As it’s the turn of N league to govern, the problem is N league has been alleged for election fraud. The people suffer from increasing deprivation, hunger, discomfort and mega corruption all over. Many of us in Pakistan genuinely believe that the present government has failed to perform. Though invoking article 245 shows the failure of civil administration, the Pak Military has no intention to intervene into political affairs. It’s up to the apex court to remove the sitting prime minister so that he can be independently investigated on murder charges and rigging charges. Auditing the election should be made mandatory for a more mature democracy. The electoral fraud can be minimized if the inherent defects are removed from the current system or it’s totally replaced by a brand new system of governance as Mr. Qadri suggests. Pakistan needs newer generation of leaders who are chosen by the educated Pakistanis. A renewed democracy includes the ouster of obsolete political practice. After all Pakistan deserves respect and satisfaction. . Waan laysa lil insani illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

to work one to one with a disruptive student who you know has potential, when you have a gifted student who needs more from you but you can’t give it to them right away and when you have a typical student who just needs to ask one question. Or the most devastating burden when a student doesn’t return to your classroom because they have died due to their physical disability or their mental health. I could go on and on because I have spent time in those classrooms. Surrey teachers, staff and administration are hard working, caring, resourceful people who only want the best for every student who enrols in our School District. Right now we are worried about all of our students and families. We want them to be in school, to have the constant in their life that is so important to their future, to the future of this Province, the Province that you are Premier of. It is time for you to do the right thing, meet with Mr.Iker, talk to Minister Fassbender, talk to BCPSEA, talk to the families who so desperately want a solution, be the leader that you were elected to be. Students and families are counting on you. In closing, this letter reflects my personal opinion as a School Trustee, Education Assistant and citizen of British Columbia. Respectfully

THE

UDHIYA (QURBANI)

What is Udhiya?

‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic word meaning “blood sacrifice”, and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word “Qurban” which literally means an act performed to seek Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. The sacrifice of an animal has always been a recognised form of worship in many religions, but in the ‘Shariah’ (Islamic sacred law) of The Last and Final Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him) the sacrifice of an animal has been recognised as a form of ibadah (worship) during the three days of the month Zul Hijjah, namely the 10th, 11th, and 12th . This is to commemorate the unparalleled sacrifice offered by the Prophet Sayyidna Ibrahim, Alayhi Salam, when he, in pursuance to a command of Allah Ta’ala conveyed to him in a dream, prepared himself to slaughter his beloved son, Sayyidna Isma’il, Alayhi Salam, and actually intended to do so, but Allah Ta’ala the Almighty, after testing his submission, sent down a sheep and saved his son from the logical fate of slaughter. It is from that incident that the sacrifice of an animal became an obligatory duty to be performed by every Muslim who has the means to do it. On who is it obligatory? Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is of sound mind - mature (has reached the age of puberty), Muqeem (i.e. he is not a traveller in terms of Sharia) Possesses the amount of 612,36 grams of silver or wealth equivalent to that value which is in excess of one›s basic needs and debts on any of the three days of Qurbani. It is not necessary that this amount be in one›s possession for a

complete lunar year. (please do consult your local Islamic Scholars for more details and exact value in your local currency) What the Quran and Hadith says: Allah Ta’ala, The Most Wise says: «It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allâh, it is your piety that reaches Him. Indeed He has subjected them (animals) to you so that you may glorify Allah for guiding you, and give glad tidings to those who excel in good.» (Quran-22:37) The Noble Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said: «For every hair that is on the sacrificial animal, one reward is recorded for the person making the Qurbâni.» «There is nothing dearer to Allâh during the days of Qurbâni than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Qiyamah with its horns, hair and hooves (to be weighed in reward). The sacrifice is accepted by Allâh before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart.» (Ibn Majah). “Whoever has the capacity to sacrifice and does not do so, should not come to the place where the Eid prayer is offered.” (Ibn Majah). Therefore not ignore this important part of Deen if you do have the means. There are many more details that relate to Qurbani which we have not covered in this brief article. A D FVAE I RT THI S E R Volume 1, Book 3, Number 64: Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Abbas: Once Allah’s Apostle gave a letter to a person and ordered him to go and deliver it to the Governor of Bahrain. (He did so) and the Governor of Bahrain sent it to Chousroes, who read that letter and then tore it to pieces. (The sub-narrator (Ibn Shihab) thinks that Ibn Al-Musaiyab said that Allah’s Apostle invoked Allah against them (saying), “May Allah tear them into pieces, and disperse them all totally.)”

By: Harun Yahya There are so many people who take this life seriously. They save their money and regard entertaining their lower selves as more important than anything else. They want the whole world to be theirs and all their boundless desires to be met. Their greed and selfishness have literally blinded them. These people who do not believe live indescribably shallow lives by immersing themselves in this world. The most banal pleasures, a few plates of food and something snazzy to wear make them very happy. They boast of the money they’ve accumulated in the bank, their children at good schools and the luxurious homes they furnish. They accumulate more and more, but never reflect that there is a day of accounting after this world, a day that nobody can escape: “To those who are disbeliever, the life of this world is painted in glowing colors and they laugh at those who have faith. But on the Day of Rising those who fear Allah will be over them. Allah provides for whoever He wills without any reckoning.” (Qur’an, 2:212) Unbelievers suffocate in empty lives as they never raise their eyes to look at the sky, reflect on who created the universe or grasp the reason for their presence in the world. The world draws them down like quicksand. They then depart this world, never having known faith or the wealth, peace and beauty it bestows upon the heart. They are unaware that the greatest treasure trove is trusting in and relying on Allah and that faith and piety are the keys to true

Deep faith is a believer’s unending treasury

happiness in this life and the hereafter. Although the millions of people who have never known faith and believers whose hearts overflow with it may appear to be living in the same world, they in fact inhabit entirely different ones. They move through the same places and witness the same events and are tested in the same way, but their reactions, the words they speak and the feelings in their hearts are entirely different. On the one hand is the delight and comfort of profound faith, and on the other is the sterility and wretchedness of the lack of faith; one group moves from joy to joy, and the other from sorrow to sorrow. Someone without faith can never approach the matchless comfort that it bestows, nor the peace of submission to Allah. A perfect life begins in this world for a believer who has attained deep faith.

The Miracle repeats its series of 99 Names of Allah (SWT) &Prophet Mohammad (saw) Names and Meanings. In last edition we printed Al Jabar name of Allah(swt) and Al Hashir Mohammad(saw) name.

The heart of the believer who has attained that great blessing is full of love of Allah at all times. Allah is in his every thought and word. He possesses a matchless trust in Allah and great fortitude. His whole attention is focused on Allah. He does not live in or become caught up by events. The life of this world does not swallow him whole. The believer who attains such powerful faith knows that all events are under the control of Allah. Allah looks from all eyes and speaks all words. All events are created by Allah. The pure believer who realizes this has boundless trust in — and submission to — Allah. No matter what goes on around him, he makes no concession on the moral values of the Qur’an, but constantly turns to Him and knows that all things are for the best. Nobody can wear down the believer who has pure faith, turn him from his path or distract him with sorrow or doubts; deep faith gives the soul a glorious strength. That believer will never bend in the face of any test, and will never abandon his unfailing trust in Allah. So deep, immaculate and powerful is his love of Allah that he fears losing Allah’s love for even a single moment. His aim in this world is solely to please Him and be His beloved servant. He will never abandon that eternal love for our Lord, even if the world comes crashing down upon him and he faces even the severest tests.

“Some people set up equals to Allah, loving them as they should love Allah. But those who have faith have greater love for Allah. If only you could see those who do wrong at the time when they see the punishment, and that truly all strength belongs to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment.” (Qur’an, 2:165) The Prophet Abraham was very strong when he was cast into the flames. The Prophet Jesus was very strong when the hypocrites tried to capture him. The Prophet Moses was very strong in the face of Pharaoh who mistreated his people. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was very strong in the face of attacks by the pagans. The Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) was very strong when his people mocked him and he built his ark on his own. The Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) was very strong when he was kept in the dungeon for years. These beloved servants of Allah drew that strength from their great faith. They never wearied, not even if they were opposed by all their peoples. They knew that Allah was always with them. Who could have caused a prophet who took Allah, the Creator of the universe, as his friend to stray from his path? Who could have hindered a prophet who trusted in our Lord alone? A believer’s aim in this world must be to achieve the deep faith bestowed on the hearts of these prophets. The believer must strive day and night to attain that powerful faith. Their daily lives must not be the same as the one they lead before. A believer must seek shelter from superficial faith in Allah. There is no room for sorrow or grief or complaints in such a pure faith, only peace, submission, joy and surrender to destiny. Wherever he turns, the believer will see the lovely face of our Lord. Whatever happens, he will see the goodness and beauty in it. His soul will be tranquil and trained with the Qur’an, and his heart will beat with a profound love. “O self at rest and at peace, return to your Lord, well-pleasing and well-pleased! Enter among My servants! Enter My Garden.’ (Qur’an, 89: 27-30) The writer has authored more than 300 books translated in 73 languages on politics, religion and science.

The Obligatory Nature of Hajj

By: Shaykh Mawlana Muhammad Saleem Leicester, UK. The advent of the month of Shawwal brings with it the remembrance of Ibrahim AS and his memorable hajj. All over the world, those who are fortunate make preparations for this great spiritual experience. Hajj is from the five pillars of Islam and is fard upon every sane and mature believer who possesses the means to perform hajj. Allah SWT mentions in the Glorious Quran: “As a right of Allah, it is obligatory on the people to perform hajj of the House – on everyone who has the ability to manage (his) way to it.”(3:97) Virtues of Hajj The Prophet SAW has mentioned many virtues of hajj, encouraging the believers to fulfil this obligation: “O People! Indeed Allah, the Mighty, the Exalted has made hajj obligatory upon you; therefore perform hajj.’’ (Ahmad) “There is no reward for an accepted hajj except Jannah.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim) “Whoever performs hajj for the sake of pleasing Allah, and therein utters no word of evil, nor commits any evil deed, shall return from it free from sin as the day on which his mother gave birth to him.” (Al-Bukahri, Muslim) Warnings for Non-performance of Hajj The Prophet SAW has also warned those who do not fulfil this obligation despite it becoming obligatory upon them: “He who possesses enough provisions which will suffice for him to reach the House of Allah, and he does not perform hajj, then there is no care whether he dies as a Jew or a Christian.” (At - Tirmidhi #802) Hajj is fard upon every sane, adult and healthy Muslim, when he has sufficient wealth to enable him to travel to and from the Ka’bah. This will apply when the wealth required to take him is in excess of his needs (such as house, transport, clothing, etc.). He also needs to have sufficient wealth to leave behind for the needs of those who are dependent on him. Furthermore, the journey needs to be a safe one and a woman needs to be travelling with a mahram. As can be understood from the great virtues and stern warnings above, a person upon whom hajj is fard should endeavour to perform hajj at the earliest possible opportunity this year. The Prophet SAW has said: “The one who intends to go for hajj should hurry; for sometimes he can get ill, his conveyance can go missing or some other obstacle may arise (which will hinder him from travelling).” (Ahmad) Misconceptions and Lame Excuses Many people delay the performance of hajj due to misconceptions which become lame excuses for not performing hajj. Inshallah,

I wish to clarify a few of these misunderstandings, so that those who find themselves in these situations can repent and make preparations immediately. Many people have enough wealth for them to go for hajj, but they wait to accrue enough wealth so that their spouse can also accompany them. If the husband has enough wealth then he should go for hajj immediately. And if the wife has enough wealth, and she has other maharim with whom she can go for hajj, then she should go immediately too. The Shariah does not give either permission to postpone the hajj and wait for the other. Many people think that it is necessary that they make arrangements for their parents to perform hajj before they do. This too is incorrect in light of the Shariah. Undoubtedly, to make one’s parents perform hajj is a great virtue and honour; however, if hajj is not fard on them, but it is fard upon the children, then they should not concern themselves with their parents’ hajj at this moment and fulfil their own obligation. It is possible that in the children waiting for the parents or in the case of the husband waiting for the wife or vice versa the one upon whom hajj is fard passes away and is questioned by Allah SWT for its non-fulfilment. Others delay embarking on the journey until certain worldly tasks have been completed. Remember! The targets of the world will never end. If it is one worldly target that is the excuse this year, then it will be another next year. The Prophet SAW has said: “No servant leaves hajj for some worldly objective but that he will see the people returning from hajj before his worldly objective is fulfilled.” (At-Tabrani) Therefore, one should put aside any worldly goals he has in mind and fulfil the obligation of Allah SWT first. It is also noteworthy to remember that it is from the ploys of Shaytan that he will never say, ‘Don’t perform hajj’, rather, he will make you defer its performance, year after year, until it’s too late. Similarly, many delay their hajj because of

this hadith: “He who performs forty salah in my masjid in such a way that he does not miss a single salah, then Allah prescribes his freedom from the Fire of Jahannam, freedom from punishment and freedom from hypocrisy.”(Ahmad) Many think that it is necessary to perform forty salah in Al- Masjid An-Nabawi, and some have the desire and greed for this virtue, so they delay their performance of hajj as they cannot spare enough time or money to stay in Al –Madinah for the duration of forty salah. Hajj is for five days only, and it becomes fard upon that person who can only afford to go for the minimum time. The inability to travel to Al-Madinah will not be a valid excuse not to perform hajj. Of course, after reaching so close to the blessed city of Al-Madinah, one should endeavour to at least spend a day in the blessed city and visit Al-Masjid An-Nabawi, and present himself in the Court of Rasulullah SAW. Some believe that if their children have reached a marriageable age and are not yet married, then the parents cannot perform hajj until the children are married. This too has no basis whatsoever in the Shariah. Some delay in travelling as they have small children at home. Once hajj becomes fard, they should seek suitable relatives, friends, etc. who can look after their children whilst they go for hajj; and they need not travel for long due to their circumstance and situation. Some delay their hajj as they think it is better to perform it in their old age closer to their death! This is a fallacy as they have no guarantee for how long they will live, and this idea is in complete contrast to the command of the Prophet SAW to perform hajj at the earliest opportunity. Some delay performing the hajj as they only obtain a set number of days off work, and they postpone their journey hoping that they may get more days off next year and can spend more time in the Al-Haramayn. This too is not a valid Shari reason to postpone the hajj. They should go and spend whatever time they have available and absolve themselves of the obligation of hajj. Some delay the hajj, as they cannot afford to buy gifts for people, thus deferring their obligation until they have enough money that they can buy gifts for their loved and dear ones. This again is not a valid Shari excuse. Some delay in going for hajj as they cannot afford the ‘five star’, ‘deluxe’ or ‘golden’ package. From a Shari point of view, as soon as they can afford the cheapest most basic package, hajj becomes fard upon

them. Others can afford a package, but as the package includes a hotel which is far from the Al-Haram, they are not able to read all five salah in Al-Haram. This does not justify delaying the hajj. Remember, as long as the five days of hajj are part of the package, hajj will be fard upon them. Some do not go for hajj on the pretext that they are not yet ready to change their lives. Such a thought is from Shaytan. Do we think the same when it comes to reading salah or paying zakah? And if this is the case, then change your life, for it is obligatory anyway! Moreover, insha’allah, through the barakah of hajj, the life will change for the better. Some go to the other extreme and have resolved to change their lives, but make comments such as, ‘My Iman is not yet strong enough and I need to build on my Iman.’ This thought too is from Shaytan. Hajj is a very important fundamental which helps to make one’s Iman stronger. Shaykh Mufti Abdur Rahim Lajpuri RA mentions with regards the permissible reasons for postponing hajj:

The following are reasons for which hajj may be postponed: •Becoming bankrupt. •Fear of a tyrannical leader. •Being imprisoned. •An unsafe journey. •Illness because of which the person cannot travel. •For a woman not to have a mahram or husband to accompany her. •For a woman to be sitting in her ‘iddah. He further states that although these factors justify postponing hajj; however, it will be compulsory to proceed with the journey as soon as they no longer exist. Therefore, it is my heartfelt plea to those upon whom hajj is fard, that they embark on this blessed journey this very year. They should have trust in Allah SWT for all their affairs and fulfil this obligation. May Allah SWT remove all difficulties and hurdles that anyone may have and make hajj easy for one and all. Amin. 6th annual Eid Festival at the Maple Ridge Library Alhamdulillah the 6th annual Eid Festival at the Maple Ridge Library was held recently .Once again by the Mercy of Allah swt and your support the event was very successful. At the event we had the mayors of both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The mayors supported the activity of the Islamic Society of Ridge Meadows as sharing information on Islam and dispelling assumptions . They declared that all are welcome irrespective of their religious or personal affiliations . In addition MLA Doug Bing attended the event. He mentioned that the face of the legislature in Victoria is gradually changing to represent the demographics of the province. Besides the dignitaries there was a large turnout of the community to participate in the event. A difference this year was that we had two wonderful speakers Br. Ali and Sr Farah . Br. Kazakhstan’s prime minister resigns Reasons behind resignation of Karim Massimov, former Soviet nation’s longest serving prime minister, are unclear. The prime minister of Kazakhstan has resigned after leading the oil-rich Central Asian nation for five years and shepherding its economy through the global financial crisis.Karim Massimov’s resignation was accepted on Monday by a presidential decree, which also resulted in his appointment to the position of head of President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s administration. Massimov was the longest-serving head of government in the former Soviet nation’s history and is widely respected in the international investor community. Real power in Kazakhstan is held by Nazarbayev, but Massimov has been seen as an influential and competent steward of economic affairs.

The ensuing feud with the judiciary reignited long-simmering street protests and rattled foreign investors.

Mr. Abe faces not only industrial decline but also the challenge of an increasingly assertive China.

Hamas Emerges Buoyant Despite Bloodshed and Devastation in Gaza

By: JODI RUDOREN Gaza Strip — Ismail Haniya, the top Hamas leader in Gaza, worked the crowd in what used to be the Boura neighborhood of this battered northern border town, kissing the cheeks of elders and the foreheads of masked fighters. He waved at the women standing in front of makeshift huts next to the homes flattened in Israeli attacks, as children watched from atop concrete piles where green Hamas flags were planted as though on conquered lands. “These buildings were the gates to the victory,” Mr. Haniya told one resident during the tour Tuesday afternoon. More than a week after an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire agreement halted 50 days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, little has changed on the ground. Electricity is still scarce, residents have to line up to collect clean water, and there is no word when the promised materials for reconstruction might arrive, in what quantities and under whose supervision. RELATED COVERAGE In Ashkelon, Israel, on Sunday, a woman left the hairdresser’s chair to go to a nearby bomb shelter as sirens rang out. A home that was destroyed by a Hamas missile near Ben Gurion International Airport in Yahud, near Tel Aviv.Hamas Gambled on War as Its Woes Grew in Gaza. But Hamas, the militant Islamist faction that ruled Gaza for seven years and led the battle against Israel, has already handed out more than $40 million in $2,000 payments to each family whose home was hit, according to Mousa Abu Marzook, a Hamas official based in Cairo who accompanied Mr. Haniya on the tour. Having given up official control of Gaza’s ministries in June to a new Palestinian government that has yet to take hold here — a picture of Mr. Haniya, a former prime minister, still hangs in the office of the education chief — Hamas paradoxically seems to be politically in its strongest position in years. Polls show an unprecedented spike in popular support because of the war without, so far, people blaming Hamas for the devastation left behind. Leaders spent the last days doing victory laps, meeting with families of the fallen and touring the wreckage. In separate interviews, they repeatedly shrugged off questions about what happens next, saying “let’s wait and see” as if in a refrain. “This is the responsibility of Mahmoud Abbas because now he is responsible for the government,” said Mahmoud al-Zahar, referring to the president of the Palestinian

Authority and leader of the rival Fatah faction. “We are not responsible.” Ziad el-Zaza, the former deputy prime minister and finance minister, said Hamas “would not be blamed because Hamas leaders were in the front lines and they suffered losses” — his own four-story house was leveled — and because “those who offered relief to the people are also Hamas, those who go and comfort people are Hamas.” Hamas remains relatively isolated in the region, its stores of rockets have been badly depleted, and the cease-fire failed to meet its repeated demands for a full lifting of Israeli restrictions on travel and trade, so the honeymoon may not last. The more time that passes without real change in Gaza’s conditions, analysts said, the more residents are likely to blame Hamas for the 2,100 lives lost and the vast destruction across the coastal territory. “The enemies of Hamas are stupid enough to take part of the burden off Hamas,” said Omar Shaban, a Gaza-based economist and former political candidate. “I’m independent. I’m not Hamas; I’m not Fatah. Now I’m 100 percent it’s Abbas who is at fault.

He didn’t come to Gaza. I didn’t hear anything from him.” Even the Gaza-based minister of public works expressed frustration with Mr. Abbas after a meeting on Wednesday in the destroyed neighborhood of Shejaiya. “Hamas is functioning; they gave the people $2,000,” complained the minister, Mofeed M. Al Hassina. “The money gives you the power, gives you everything. They’re stronger than us as a government.” Israel insists that Hamas was hit hard, that it destroyed more than 30 tunnels that penetrated Israel, and that Gaza militias retain at most 3,000 rockets, a third of what they started the summer with. Airstrikes killed three top Hamas commanders along with hundreds of fighters, though the fate of Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’s Qassam Brigades, remains unknown. (Mr. Abu Marzook and Mr. Zahar both said they had met with him but offered no proof that he is alive.) Mr. Haniya’s niece was killed and his home destroyed. Mr. Zahar was taking meetings under a tree next to a stack of furniture recovered from his bombed-out house. Hamas, founded in 1987 as the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and considered a terrorist group by the United States and Europe, reconciled in April with Mr. Abbas’s Palestine Liberation Organization out of what many experts saw as desperation. The movement had lost crucial political and economic backing from Iran, Syria and, especially, Egypt after the ousting of President Mohamed Morsi, a former Brotherhood leader, last summer. Its government employees had not been paid in months.

Govt of Canada marks 500,000 apprenticeship grants issued to help young Canadians get jobs

The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development, today announced that the Government of Canada has provided a total of 500,000 apprenticeship grants to Canadians since 2007 to help them pursue careers in the skilled trades. Minister Kenney spoke with apprentices at an event hosted by George Brown College to celebrate this important milestone and handed out apprenticeship grants to those who have recently completed their training. The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant and Apprenticeship Completion Grant are cash grants that encourage Canadians to pursue and complete apprenticeship training in Red Seal trades. Through these grants, apprentices receive up to $4,000, which can be used to pay for tuition, tools or other expenses. To date, the Government has provided nearly

$700 million in apprenticeship grants. He also highlighted other Government of Canada measures to create opportunities for apprentices such as the introduction of the Canada Apprentice Loan, support for training programs and tax credits such as the Tool Tax Deduction for apprentices and tradesmen and the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit for employers. Minister Kenney also addressed the need for a parity of esteem that will put the skilled trades on an equal footing with a university education. He expressed concern about negative stereotypes that exist towards the skilled trades and the false perception that a university education is more valuable than an apprenticeship. Quick Facts •According to Buildforce Canada, in the construction sector alone, it is expected that Canadian companies will need approximately 300,000 new workers over the next 10 years. •According to the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, in less than 10 years, employers will not be able to find qualified candidates for 1.5 million job openings. •In Economic Action Plan 2014, the Government announced the introduction of the Canada Apprentice Loan, which will be available in January 2015 to provide apprentices in Red Seal trades with access to interest-free loans of up to $4,000 per period of technical training. It is estimated that at least 26,000 apprentices a year will apply for these loans.

Fiji ‘progressing well’ towards election

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is confident Fiji’s coming elections will be a success and vindicate Australia’s controversial move to rekindle ties with the military-led nation. Fiji will hold elections on September 17, the first since the country’s leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama seized power in a military coup in 2006. The Abbott government lifted Australia’s travel bans on senior Fijian military and government figures in March as a goodwill gesture ahead of the much-awaited poll. Its reversal of Australia’s isolationist policy towards the Bainimarama regime - maintained during the Howard, Rudd and Gillard governments - wasn’t without controversy. It’s understood some within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade were keen to see the outcome of the election before granting concessions to Commodore Bainimarama. But the government is confident it made the right call and is hoping its re-engagement with Fiji translates into a free and fair poll come voting day. “Had we not changed our approach to Fiji, Australia would have been excluded from the electoral process,” Ms Bishop told AAP from Samoa. “I believe it is far preferable

to engage with Fiji and work with them to assist them rather than continue to punish them for events from 2006.” Australia already has sent officials to Suva as part of a multi-national observation team to oversee the run-up to the poll. Former Liberal minister Peter Reith was named head of Australia’s contingent. Ms Bishop said reports from the ground suggested things were “progressing well”, and she’d been impressed by the number of registered voters and political parties wanting to partake in the poll. Commodore Bainimarama offered Ms Bishop similar assurances in person in August during a campaign stop in Sydney to drum up support from the country’s Fijian community ahead of the poll. Amnesty International has been less glowing, documenting ongoing cases of political violence, intimidation and torture by Fijian security forces under Commodore Bainimarama’s control. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s executive director Peter Jennings said Ms Bishop was right to take a “forward-leaning approach” to Fiji, even if DFAT disagreed. The real test lay in how Commodore Bainimarama would react to the election outcome. “That will be the sensitive point,” Mr Jennings told AAP recently. But it would be a major achievement for the region if Fiji returned to the diplomatic fold and Ms Bishop would deserve credit, he said. Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth in 2009 after Commodore Bainimarama failed to meet a deadline to return it to democracy. Source: SBS

Fiji Says Syrian Rebels Issue Demands for Captives

Fiji’s military commander said Tuesday that Syrian rebels have issued three demands for the release of 45 Fijian peacekeepers they’ve held captive for five days. Brig. Gen. Mosese Tikoitoga said the alQaida-linked Nusra Front wants to be taken off the U.N. terrorist list, wants humanitarian aid delivered to parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, and wants compensation for three of its fighters it says were killed in a shootout with U.N. officers. Tikoitoga didn’t say if the demands would be seriously considered. He said the U.N. had sent hostage negotiators to Syria to take over discussions from military leaders. “Negotiations have moved up to another level with the professional negotiators now in place,” he said. The Nusra Front abducted the Fijian soldiers on Thursday and is holding them at an unknown location. The rebels on Thursday also surrounded two Filipino units serving in the U.N. mission that monitors the buffer zone between Israel and Syria, but the Filipino troops escaped over the weekend. In Manila, Philippines, military chief of staff Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said the 40 Filipino peacekeepers who escaped had not accepted a rebel

demand that they give up their firearms and surrender because that would have put the troops in grave danger. Catapang said the rebel demands for the Fijians’ release showed their true nature. “We don’t negotiate with terrorists,” Catapang said. “We have machine guns and crew-served weapons so if we give them our weapons, this will help create an international problem.” Tikoitoga on Tuesday also released the names of the 45 detained Fijian soldiers, who he said are led by Captain Savenaca Siwatibau Rabuka. The commander asked

Fiji’s community and church leaders to help look after the families of the captive troops and asked the public to also offer support. “I appeal to all Fijians that while we pray for our soldiers in Syria that we be sensitive to the families,” he said, adding “the U.N. has assured us they will use all of their available resources for the safe return of our soldiers.” Source: ABC News

Auto sales reach record on ‘flashing green’ economic indicators

Auto sales surged to boom levels last month, hitting a record in Canada, and reaching numbers not seen in the U.S. market since the mid-2000s. Canadians drove 171,560 new vehicles off dealers’ lots in August, marking the best August on record and continuing a pace that should lead to a record performance that will surpass the previous high set last year. U.S. sales soared to about 17.5 million vehicles on a seasonally adjusted annual rate basis, the highest level since 2006. Sales in both countries are being driven by low interest rates, loans from auto makers that in some cases are interest free for as long as seven years, improving economic fundamentals and, in the case of the U.S. market, strong pent-up demand. “If you look at the macroeconomic fundamentals, they are all flashing green at this time,” Emily Kolinski Morris, senior U.S. economist of Ford Motor Co., told analysts and reporters

on a conference call Wednesday. “It’s just a very good picture right now.” Low interest rates appear to be a key factor in both markets, said Paul Ferley, Royal Bank’s assistant chief economist. “Certainly, I’ve been surprised by the strength of these auto sales numbers, but I’ve been similarly surprised in terms of some of the strength in housing starts,” Mr. Ferley said. “Low interest rates are making financing costs that much more attractive so that’s inducing households to make these large purchases.” The state of the industry is dramatically better than it was in 2006, when U.S. sales hit 16.99 million in the last year of the previous boom, which began fading with soaring gas price in 2007 before collapsing in 2008 with the recession and the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings of Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors Co. But those prerecession years were dubbed the “era of profitless prosperity” because the Detroit auto makers were

racking up billions of dollars in losses while sales rolled along at or close to the 17-million unit level annually. The recovery from the recession has generated profits because auto makers have eliminated tens of billions of dollars of debt and slashed costs by eliminating tens of thousands of jobs and closing dozens of plants. So far in the recovery, auto makers have been fairly welldisciplined in trying to keep a tight rein on incentives. Auto consumer research firm Truecar.com reported that incentives hit an average of $2,772 (U.S.) per vehicle in the United States last month, up from August, 2013, but down slightly from July. Ford noted that average transaction prices on its F-Series pickup were $2,800 higher than they were a year earlier, a reversal of the traditional scenario, in which a vehicle that is about to be redesigned comes with hefty rebates. Several auto makers reported record results in Canada, notably Chrysler Canada Inc., whose sales rose 22 per cent

In a single plant, this plant offers potent, natural medicine that helps a wide variety of internal and external ailments including: • Halts the growth of cancer tumors. • Lowers high cholesterol. • Repairs “sludge blood” and reverses “sticky blood”. • Boosts the oxygenation of your blood. • Eases inflammation and soothes arthritis pain. • Protects the body from oxidative stress. • Prevents kidney stones and protects the body from oxalates in coffee and tea. • Alkalizes the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits. • Cures ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease and other digestive disorders. • Reduces high blood pressure natural, by treating the cause, not just the symptoms. • Nourishes the body with minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glyconutrients. • Accelerates healing from physical burns and radiation burns. • Replaces dozens of first aid products, makes bandages and antibacterial sprays obsolete. • Halts colon cancer, heals the intestines and lubricates the digestive tract. • Ends constipation. • Stabilizes blood sugar and reduces triglycerides in diabetics. • Prevents and treats candida infections. • Protects the kidneys from disease. • Functions as nature’s own “sports drink” for electrolyte balance. • Boosts cardiovascular performance and physical endurance. • Speeds recovery from injury or physical exertion. • Hydrates the skin, accelerates skin repair. Such an impressive plant yet most people only know about the topical application of Aloe Vera gel. Most think it’s only good for sunburns when in reality; aloe vera is useful for both external and internal uses. This article, will discuss some of these uses. Health benefits of Aloe Vera gel What I’m offering here is my own opinion about Aloe Vera’s healing benefits. It’s interesting that if I were selling aloe vera myself, I couldn’t make these true statements because the FDA would seize my inventory and shut me down for “selling unapproved drugs.” But I’m not in the aloe vera business, I’m in the business of helping people heal even if it means not censoring the truth about the healing powers of aloe vera merely to appease corrupt agencies that censor and oppress information about the healing benefits of natural medicine. Here’s what I know about aloe vera’s health benefits: Aloe Vera boosts immune function and destroys cancer tumors Scientific research shows strong immunomodulatory and antitumour properties for aloe vera polysaccharides. That means the gel helps boosts immune system function while destroying cancer tumors. One study published in International Immunopharmacology (1995) showed that aloe vera polysaccharides exhibited potent macrophage-activating activities including producing increased volumes of nitric oxide (which has antitumor potential). Personally, I believe that anyone wishing to prevent or cure cancer should seriously investigate aloe vera as part of their recipe for eliminating cancer for life. I wouldn’t rely solely on aloe vera, especially since there are dozens of cancer cures that are now well known in naturopathic medicine. Aloe Vera halts inflammation Using aloe topically is well known to ease

inflammation of joints, reducing arthritis pain. But aloe can also be used internally, reducing inflammation throughout the body from the inside out. People who drink aloe vera for two weeks typically begin to experience a significant reduction of inflammation symptoms. Aloe Vera Stabilizes Blood Sugar in Diabetics Diabetic patients who take aloe vera for 3 months experience a significant drop in fasting blood sugar levels. They also exhibit lower cholesterol levels and slight improvements in total cholesterol. Numerous clinical studies have been published that demonstrate aloe vera’s antidiabetic properties. Diabetics are also likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera’s blood enhancements (see below). Since aloe reverses “sludge blood” and boosts circulation to extremities, diabetics suffering from peripheral neuropathy (hands and feet going numb) are likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera supplements. Aloe Vera lowers cholesterol and triglycerides When used internally, aloe vera gel improves the quality of the blood and helps rebalance the blood chemistry in a way that lowers cholesterol and total triglycerides (in people with elevated levels). When you consider that blueberries are also powerful cholesterol-lowering medicines, you realize why the Good Cause Wellness Aloe Vera + Blueberry product is such a smart idea: Both ingredients lower high cholesterol! Plus, this is far safer than using statin drugs, which have extremely harmful negative side effects while depleting the body of nutrients such as CoQ10. Anyone on statin drugs is strongly urged to consider using high doses of aloe vera + blueberries to safety transition off statin drugs (all under the supervision of a naturopathic physician, of course). Aloe vera won’t kill you like statin drugs can, either. Aloe is completely safe to eat like a food. Aloe Vera relieves joint and muscle pain This effect is directly related to the inflammation factor mentioned above. It works when used both internally and externally. Essentially, aloe reduces overall inflammation. Of course, is you continue eating a pro-inflammatory diet (red meat, milk, sugar, white flour, fried foods etc.) then you’ll never get rid of all your inflammation with aloe alone, but aloe can help ease your pain while you transition to a healthier lifestyle that eliminates the inflammation for good! Aloe Vera increases Antioxidant effects of Vitamins This is an especially interesting effect of aloe: It makes vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants work better! It actually increases the potency of antioxidants, probably due to its effect on enhancing blood

quality and allowing the blood to more effectively transport oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells. In fact, it is my belief that Aloe Vera makes everything nutritious work better due to its blood-enhancing effects. If I’m right about that, it means aloe can potentiate anti-cancer herbs, too, helping them more effectively target tumors. Aloe Vera actually contains advanced biochemical technology that the drug companies can only help to understand someday. This technology is 100% natural and compatible with the human body. All you have to do to experience this technology for yourself is eat aloe vera gel! Aloe Vera cures ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease and Celiac disease Polysaccharides in the aloe vera plant have curative effects on numerous digestive disorders. The Internet is a storehouse of information and testimonials about aloe vera curing IBS, ulcers, Crohn’s disease and other disorders of the digestive tract. This is one of the best-known applications of aloe vera gel. Taking aloe certainly isn’t a magic bullet cure, of course. It won’t reverse your disease after drinking one glass of aloe vera gel; it needs to be used regularly. Most people report positive results in 3 - 30 days, depending on the condition. First aid kid? Aloe Vera is all you need! Aloe vera is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. This fact is well known by not just herbalists around the world, but also by anyone with even a hint of common sense. If aloe vera gel wasn’t antibacterial, then any little nick or scrape of the aloe plant would result in the whole thing being eaten up by bacteria. Aloe has to be antibacterial simply to survive in the wild! Otherwise, the moist, nutrient-rich gel would be a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Aloe Vera ends Acid Reflux Acid reflux isn’t really a disease but the drug companies just call it that to convince everyone that they need to take medications to ease the symptoms. But in reality, all you probably need is Aloe Vera. Drink aloe vera gel on a regular basis, and your heartburn symptoms will usually vanish within a few days. Of course, it would also help if you’d stop eating fried and processed foods. Aloe Vera Cures Gum Disease Want a simple, effective cure for gum disease? It’s easy: Just sprinkle some of this aloe vera powder on your toothbrush before brushing. The aloe vera powder actually heals gums and eliminates gum disease. Merely drinking the aloe also helps heal your gums: Just swish the liquid around your mouth a few times before each swallow. You’ll be bathing your gums in healing aloe gel, and they’ll begin to heal rapidly. Even severe cases of gum disease can be completely cured in a matter of weeks using aloe vera gel. (By the way, most people

with gum disease are also chronically deficient in vitamin D, so if you boost your vitamin D intake while treating your gums with aloe vera gel, your results will be greatly accelerated!) Aloe Vera heals burns, cuts and scrapes - When used externally, aloe is the best wound dressing ever discovered, far exceeding the capability of even the most advanced emergency room wound dressings. It works by simultaneously sealing the wound while attracting an increased flow of blood to the wound, accelerating wound healing. Aloe has been known to heal thirddegree burn victims with no scarring and to restore burned skin that would have normally died. Aloe vera gel is extremely effective in wound care. Large chunks of aloe vera gel can literally be packed inside wounds such as gunshot wounds or tissue tears. Placed directly on or in the wound, it kills bacteria, prevents infection and actually nourishes the traumatized tissues while sealing the wound against outside infection. Nothing beats aloe for emergency trauma medicine. Just eat aloe vera gel and you’ll get the benefits. Like A Miracle Aloe Smoothie Recipe • 1 large fresh, raw Aloe Vera leaf gel (peeling external layer) • 2 cups fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or a combination) • 1 quart organic milk • 1/2 Tsp stevia OR 2 Tbsp agave nectar/ honey • (Optional) 1 cup cooked quinoa (adds protein and fiber to the drink) • 1-2 cups of water (see below) Add all ingredients except water and Aloe Vera gel blending until smooth liquid (VitaMix blender is recommended). Add aloe vera and water as your last step, blending for no more than 10 seconds. Texture will be similar to a milkshake in thickness. Enjoy! Note: Start eating a small amount of Aloe Vera, if you’ve never eaten it before. You will notice a difference in your digestion for a few days. Aloe vera is the best internal medicine for the treatment of colon polyps, in my opinion. It soothes the intestinal tract and helps heal pre-cancerous lesions or growths. In fact, a raw juice diet using vegetable and fruit juices combined with aloe vera gel is practically a miracle cure for early-stage colon cancer. Think of it as a raw juice fast aloe vera. It’s a very powerful cleansing recipe. Remember FRESH IS BEST! Be warned that some Aloe Vera Juices and Gels on the market packed in bottles even at some health stores may contain little or no Aloe Vera in them. Do you have a Question or Comment? Canadians in the dark about immigration numbers: survey

Most Canadians don’t seem to have the foggiest notion of how many immigrants and refugees this country admits every year. When asked the question, during Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s 2013-14 annual tracking survey, 43 per cent of the Canadian adults polled wouldn’t even hazard a guess. Fully one third thought the number was less than 100,000 a year. In fact, for the past decade, Canada has opened its doors to about 250,000 immigrants and refugees a year. (Only nine per cent of those surveyed suggested a number remotely close to that.) Ignorance of the facts, however, didn’t stop most of the 3,016 participants polled by Harris/Decima from answering when asked whether there were too many, too few or about the right number of immigrants coming to Canada every year. Twenty-six per cent said there were too many, 10 per cent said too few and 52 per cent said the number was about right. The rest said they didn’t know. After they were told the actual number admitted each year, the number who said there were too many jumped to 36 per cent. Nine per cent said too few immigrants were admitted, while 48 per cent thought the number was about right. When asked if Canada should increase, decrease or maintain its immigration intake over the next five years, nearly half favoured the status quo, about one-third ad-

vocated a decrease and 15 per cent wanted immigration levels to rise. Luc Turgeon, a University of Ottawa political scientist who has studied public attitudes toward immigration, said he wasn’t surprised by the widespread ignorance of actual immigration levels. “In numerous countries it has been proven that people have no idea how many immigrants their countries are letting in,” he said. Turgeon said the Conservative federal government has “sent a number of signals” to reassure its base that it’s keeping a close eye on people admitted to Canada. Those signals include tightening the rules for refugees, making it more difficult for refugees to access publicly funded health care and hinting that changes are in the works to the live-in caregiver program. “They’ve done enough, in terms of reforms, to show their base that nobody’s going to have a free ride if they come to Canada,” Turgeon said. Over the past couple of decades, Canadians

have generally become more accepting of immigration, Turgeon said. In the 1980s, when Canada was only admitting about 150,000 immigrants and refugees a year, significant proportions of Canadians were in favour of reducing the number. Though annual admissions have increased by about 100,000 since then, half of Canadians consistently say the country is admitting about the right number of immigrants. In fact, said Turgeon, Canada is one of the few countries in the world where attitudes toward immigration have remained generally positive over the past 15 years. In Europe, but contrast, attitudes have become “incredibly more negative,” he said. “One of the key factors is that we’ve always made an economic case for immigration. People really buy into it.” The 2013-14 tracking survey found that nearly 80 per cent of Canadians agree immigration is necessary if Canada is to sustain its economic growth. However, when asked if Canada should be helping unemployed Canadians rather than looking for skilled immigrants to fill jobs, the same number — 80 per cent — agree, including 51 per cent who express strong

agreement. Just over three-quarters of those surveyed were born in Canada, while 23 per cent were born in other countries. Interestingly, there was little difference in the survey results between views expressed by native Canadians and immigrants, though the attitudes of those born elsewhere were slightly more positive toward immigration and its benefits. The survey, conducted between Feb. 7 and Feb. 20, 2014, has a margin of error of 1.78 per cent, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20. By the numbers 258,619 Number of immigrants and refugees given permanent resident status in 2013 (preliminary numbers) 148,037 Number of economic immigrants admitted in 2013 79,586 Number of family class immigrants admitted in 2013 23,968 Number of refugees admitted in 2013 280,689 Number of immigrants and refugees admitted in 2010, the highest in the modern era 1 in 4 Proportion of Ottawa residents who are immigrants

Bring Back the Dinner Table Conversation

By Beth Kuhel “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” -Eleanor Roosevelt Pairing great food with great discussion is somewhat of a dying art on the home front. But here’s an argument for bringing back the old-fashioned dinner hour (or 15 minutes) table talk to your family’s routine: A little bit of effort can go a long way in shaping your kids’ mindsets and preparing them for the bigger world that awaits them once they graduate from high school. A recent Wall Street Journal article touted the many health benefits of eating dinner with your kids, even if it’s only a few times per week and for under 30 minutes. Their research shows that having a few family meals per week can significantly reduce childhood obesity, depression and make your family more connected. I’ll take the benefits of family dining a step further: Family meals can be the catalyst for grooming kids to become successful entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, scientists, computer engineers, business executives, artists, educators and whatever else you can imagine assuming the discussion is motivating, positive and enlightening! You can positively influence your kids by consistently initiating and encouraging stimulating discussions at the dinner table. Don’t underestimate the impact these discussions have in shaping your child’s intellectual curiosity and their confidence to pursue a career later in life: Lively discussions that allow for everyone in the family to freely voice their opinions develop a host of transferrable skills that are valued by college admissions officers and hiring managers. Transferrable skills and positive character traits can be learned at YOUR dinner table:

•Empathy: Children learn what they live and if they observe you caring for others (occasionally including people at your table who may be experiencing some personal difficulty may it be a divorce, a family loss, health issue or financial struggle) shows your kids you value helping others. Even discussing topics that show concern for helping others can positively influence your kids to become more caring people. •Group dynamics at the table require active listening. •Being heard and affirmed by others builds Self-esteem. •Explaining your idea for others to understand develops logical reasoning. •Breaking down a topic to critique another’s ideas develops analytic ability. •Defending your position and taking a clear side develops skills as an influencer that can be used in many fields where team-building, collaborating, and negotiation are needed. •Discussions on creative problem solving can build entrepreneurial skills and out of the box thinking. •Discussions about developments in business, medicine, science, technology, philanthropy, art, psychology gives kids an appreciation for the breadth of opportunities to make a difference in society during their life. If your discussions are respectful, not too heavy and leave room for questions, they can inspire kids to ask more questions and even pursue a career in one of the areas you’ve focused on. On a personal note, most of the professionals, physicians, lawyers, accountants as well as the successful executives I interact with say that they first learned about their field from family members or family friends over many years of exposure to these people and through ongoing discussions they overheard at their

dinner tables. The physicians said that their family discussions at mealtime were about chemistry, science, biology and topics relating to healthcare. At least one of their parents, if not both, talked incessantly and glowingly about this profession and the noble contribution physicians make to society. Their parents frequently expressed their admiration for individual doctors and told stories of the “good old days” in med school and so on. The same experience holds true for my friends and clients who excel in a wide range of professions and businesses. These friends admitted that as kids they couldn’t help from listening while their parents and older siblings related stories and lessons from their workday. As one person said, his decision to become a Rabbi was so easy for him as all the greatness he saw in this role “was in the air and he was breathing it in regularly.” Of course there are always exceptions to this rule, but it’s clear if the parent expresses pleasure in his/her work, the children will naturally find it more enticing to explore that field when it comes time for them to choose a career. Here are a few general topics we focused on to build awareness that you could try out at your table: •Current Events: Get your kids opinions about what they think about top stories occurring around the world. If they’re too young to understand major events, focus in on something they can relate to: Help explain one topic that they can relate to e.g. the President

visits school children to improve the nutrition in school lunches. Ask them why this matters. How does this affect them? Do they think their school provides balanced, healthful meals? •Local events: Can help children understand your connection to your community and to the people who live near you. •Global events: Shows your interest in the world at large and your concern for the wellbeing of others you don’t know on a personal basis •Articles about a hero: (local or global) teaches kids what you admire in people. Show them your excitement about hearing of someone who showed empathy, creativity and generosity to help improve the lot of another person by finding a solution to their problem. •Articles about a person whose unethical behavior tarnished his reputation: Focus on how that person’s unethical behavior (greed, dishonesty etc.) ruined his name and led to his failure.

Life Situations!

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor It’s perfectly normal to have sadness in your life. Some, however, can be a cause for concern. If you are feeling sad at this moment - or have been experiencing a down mood for a while - look honestly at your situation. There are three types of sadness most of us fall into: Short-term sadness: This is a passing mood, lasting a few days or, at most, a week. It sometimes has a cause and sometimes not. The best remedy as we all know we often fail to remember, is to lower your stress. Simple thing will be to go to bed early and get enough hours of uninterrupted sleep. It’s helpful to exercise and break up your normal routine a bit. Boredom, lack of sleep, being too sedentary and excess stress is all associated with a sad mood. Triggered sadness: This includes a downturn in mood because something undeniably bad has happened to you, such as losing your job or the death of someone close to you. In such a situation, you will generally know what the trigger is. The problem is that most people feel helpless when they enter extended sadness, even when they know there is a good reason for it. In this case, you need to process your sadness, let nature take its course and share your feelings with someone close to you and you can trust. Bottling up your feelings and feeling victimized are never helpful. Triggered sadness lasts an unpredictable length of time, yet in an emotionally healthy

a d u l t , within six months there is a return to the level of emotions that existed before the trigger was set off.

Depression: If you feel sad, exhausted, helpless, hopeless and unable to sleep, eatt for a period of time lasting more than a few weeks, you should suspect that you are depressed. There is often a trigger for this condition but it is usually something thatt you could normally cope with. When coping breaks down, depression takes over. So iff you feel that you can’t cope even with minorr stress and ordinary setbacks, mild to moderate depression may be indicated. This is a complicated mood disorder that varies from person to person. If you suspect that you orr someone close to you is depressed, a doctor’s care is needed. Remember, it’s never too late to make a healthy choice for yourself……

WOMEN

By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD You’re paying more these days not only at the gas pump but also at the grocery store. Blame it on rising oil prices, disappointing crop yields, global warming, or the weak dollar. What it all means is that you need to find smart ways to save. These expert tips and strategies can help you slash your grocery costs without sacrificing nutrition. 1. Plan Ahead Katherine Tallmadge, RD, says, “Take inventory of what you have on hand so you don’t overbuy. Create a detailed shopping list based on your needs and weekly menu plan, and take into account how you plan on using leftovers.”Have a light snack before you go shopping, and stick to your grocery list to help avoid impulse purchases or costly mistakes like falling for the displays at the end of the aisles. Before you plan your weekly menu, check the ads to see what’s on sale and use coupons to take advantage of sales and money-saving coupons. You can even sign up online to receive coupons and email alerts from your favorite grocers. 2. Make Healthy Choices -- They’re Cheaper Eating healthier foods can actually save you money, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. The researchers found that when families went on weight loss diets, they not only lost weight but reduced their food budgets. The savings came from reducing portion sizes and from buying fewer of the high-calorie foods that tend to increase the amount spent at the grocery store. People tend to spend a lot on those “extras” -- foods that add calories but little nutritional value, like sodas, bakery items, and chips. You can get more for your money if you consider the nutritional value of food for the price. For example, sodas and flavored drinks deliver mostly empty calories and could easily be replaced with less expensive sparkling

water with a splash of a 100% fruit juice like cranberry. “When my clients start eating more healthfully, their grocery bills plummet,” says Tallmadge, author of the book Diet Simple. She recommends comparing food prices based on the number of servings you’ll get, along with the food’s nutritional contribution. For example, a pound of peaches yields three to four servings. So when you divide the cost per pound, the cost is usually quite reasonable. “The ideal food is nutrient-dense not caloriedense, and the least expensive may be fresh, frozen, or canned,” Tallmadge says. And if you’re craving something sweet? Connie Diekman, RD, says, “Save money by passing on calorie-dense cakes and cookies. Instead, opt for seasonal fruit. Fruit is fat-free, high in nutrients and fiber, and a natural energizer.” Look for sales or coupons for light ice cream or nonfat frozen yogurt to enjoy with your fruit and you have a delicious, fat-free, lowcalorie dessert. 3. Buy Produce in Season Check the food section in your newspaper to find the best buys for the week based on fresh produce in season. Food in season is usually priced to sell. During the summer months, corn on the cob can cost as little as 10 cents an ear; at other times of the year, it may cost 10 times as much. Also, shop your local farmers’ market for great deals on local produce; the prices won’t include shipping costs. 4. Use Sales and Coupons Planning meals around what’s on sale can lower your grocery bills, especially if you also use coupons. Just make sure they’re for items you would buy anyway. Sunday newspapers are full of coupons and sales circulars to get you started. It’s also a good idea to stock up on staples when they’re on sale. “Buy one, get one free” is basically a technique to get you to buy twice as much as you need at half the

Ways to Save Money on Food Shopping price. At some markets, though, the product rings up half-price -- so you don’t have to buy more than one to get the savings. Use your freezer to store sale items that can be used at a later date. 5. Brown-Bag It Making lunch and taking it with you is a great money-saver and an excellent use of leftovers for meals at work, school, or wherever your destination. “Packing your lunch not only saves you money, but you can control all the ingredients so they are healthy and low in calories,” says Diekman, who is nutrition director at Washington University. Pack a simple sandwich, salad, soup, wrap, or a hearty snack of cheese. Use freezer packs and containers to keep food at the proper temperature unless you have access to a refrigerator. 6. Think Frozen, Canned, or Dried Next time you’re gathering ingredients for a recipe, try using frozen, canned, or dried foods. They may be less expensive than fresh, yet they are equally nutritious. Produce is typically frozen, canned, or dried at the peak of ripeness when nutrients are plentiful. Fish and poultry are often flash-frozen to minimize freezer damage and retain freshness. With frozen foods, you can use only the amount you need, reseal the package, and return it to the freezer. If it’s properly stored, there’s no waste. Canned foods are often sitting in a bath of juice, syrup, or salty water and usually require rinsing. Dried fruits are concentrated in flavor and a great substitute for fresh fruit. Also consider using powdered or evaporated versions of milk in soups, casseroles, mashed potatoes, or desserts. Buy the form that gives you the best price for your needs. 7. Waste Not, Want Not Before you toss perishable food into your grocery cart, think about exactly how you’ll use it. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of food waste each year. Using

leftover vegetables, poultry, or meat in soups, stews, salads, and casseroles minimizes cost and demonstrates your creativity in the kitchen. For example, have a roasted chicken for dinner one night and use the leftovers for dinner the next night. Try topping a bed of fresh greens with vegetables, fruits, and slices of leftover chicken. Add a loaf of whole-grain bread, and presto! You’ve got a nutritious meal in minutes. You can also eat leftovers for breakfast or take them with you for lunch. 8. Go Generic Consider buying store brands instead of pricier national brands. “All food manufacturers follow standards to provide safe food and beverage products of high quality,” says Robert Earl, director of nutrition policy for the Grocery Manufacturer Association. Many grocery companies buy national-brand products made to their specifications and simply put their own label on the products. Read the ingredient list on the label to be sure you’re getting the most for your money. Ingredients are listed in order by weight. So when you’re buying canned tomatoes, look for a product that lists tomatoes, not water, as the first ingredient. Also look for simpler versions of your favorite foods. For example, buy oatmeal or simple flaked or puffed cereals that contain fewer additives and are less expensive (and often healthier) than fancier cereals. 9. Buy Prepackaged Only if You Need It Unless you have a coupon or the item is on sale, buying prepackaged, sliced, or washed products comes with a higher price tag. Still, people living alone may find that smaller sizes of perishable products or bags of prepared produce eliminate waste and fit their needs best, despite the extra cost. You can also save money (and boost nutrition) by passing up the aisles with processed foods, cookies, snack foods, and soda.

My dream comes true

By Rahma Khan This day, I am going to prove to you that dreams can, by all means, come true! There was once this day, my family and I went out shopping at the mall. I knew a pet shop in the mall, and let me tell you right now, I LOVE PETS! My #1 dream all my life was to have a kitten in the house, and Subhan Allah, now I have one! My mom let me go with my siblings over to the pet shop while she finished with the shopping. We went in there, and saw some cats near the entrance. We went to the back of the store and saw 2 twin kittens. They looked pretty young. I had a little keychain with fake keys (just for fun) in my purse. I took it out and jingled the keys in front of the cage, and they both went chasing it all around! I showed my mom and she could clearly see our special relationship. So that night, my dad agreed to go see the kittens the next day. He said he would take 2 rounds. First, my mom and him would go grocery shopping and then he would pick the kids up and take us out. I got really excited! The next day, I waited desperately for my parents to come back home, and finally, they did. When I went to greet my mom, I noticed she was holding a box with holes in it. She told us all to come up to my room.

Giving a Helping Hand

I had a feeling I knew why. Sure enough, I was leaping with joy. I was screaming in excitement. My mom opened the box... and got out a kitten!!! And not just any kitten, but the kitten that was playing with my keychain at the pet store! I felt like fainting! It was the most precious time of my life. Surely, my parents are the best people in the whole world! At first, we called her ‘Shadow’ because of her black coat, but then I thought of the world’s greatest name: Precious! And that is my little kitty – cat’s name today. Subhan Allah, it was the best time of my life! And this just so proves that if you really believe in Allah, and hope with your heart for a dream to come true, there is always a chance!

Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) and his companions (radiAllahu anhum) went on a journey. They travelled by camels. After much travelling they got tired. On the way they stopped to rest. They decided to make a small camp and cook their food. So they put their camels comfortably to rest and gave them grass to eat. After that his companions decided to divide the work among themselves. One companion said, “I will go and kill the lamb for meat.” Another companion said, “I will clean the ground around the camp.” The third companion said, “I will do the cooking. Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, “I will bring wood for the fire.”All the companions (radiAllahu anhum) said with one voice, “No, Sir, we will do that for you.”But the Prophet

(salAllahu alayhi wasalam) replied, “I very well know that you all will do that for me. But it is not good for me to sit idle while you work. I am your companion. I must work as much as you do. Allah does not like any one to enjoy any superiority over his companions.” So saying, the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) went to gather fire wood. Remember : It is not good to sit idle while others work; you should always share the work with your companions.

Pakistan’s 1 Million IDP May Have to March to Islamabad to Get the Nation’s Attention

A political crisis now unfolding in Islamabad has captivated Pakistan and monopolized the national media’s attention. As a result, the Pakistani press has scarcely covered how an ongoing military operation forced nearly half a million people from their homes in North Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan. The Pakistani army launched Operation Zarb-e-Azb in mid-June, attacking several camps, including some that belonged to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), who claimed responsibility for an attack on the international airport in Karachi. The first phase of the operation included intensified airstrikes in North Waziristan, targeting militant training facilities, hideouts, and other infrastructure. After the first airstrikes, at least 457,000 people reportedly fled their homes. The air strikes have continued, and according to latest reports, the number of IDPs from that region rose to more than one million people. This flood of internally displaced persons (IDPs) was added to the 690,000 peoplealready living in protracted displacement, some for several years. According to areport by the UNHCR, Pakistan had 930,000 officially registered IDPs in June 24. This figure, however, doesn’t reflect Pakistan’s unregistered IDPs, and it doesn’t include the new IDPs escaping North Waziristan. Pakistan’s government was unprepared for this humanitarian crisis. In fact, there are allegations that some government-run refugee camps are empty, while IDPs elsewhere, sustained only by local samaritans,

endure miserable conditions. Minorities, it is reported, are sometimes ignored entirely. Officials in the province of Sindh cite budgetary constraints for failing to accommodate IDPs from the North Western Frontier Province. Many IDPs have also encountered a gruelingly slow registration process, followed by poor distribution of relief supplies. Indeed, the list of irregularities and health concerns affecting IDPs is long. Different groups in Pakistan, including opposition parties, have worked to communicate IDPs’ grievances to the national government. The government in Islamabad, however, has downplayed the scale of the disaster. On July 10, Pakistan’s foreign office refused to request international assistance, calling the rehabilitation of the country’s displaced persons an internal matter. However, they are allowing aid agencies consisting of UN and humanitarian partners under the umbrella of Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) to raise fund and provide vital humanitarian assistance to support

500,000 IDPs for six months. So far, the donors have pledged or contributed only 25% of the required $99 million fund and in the meantime the number of IDPs exceeded one million. On August 14, the political parties of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and Sufi scholar and politician Tahir-ul-Qadri—Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), respectively— staged political marches against the government in Islamabad. Their charges against the government are various: electoral rigging in 2013 general elections, corruption, nepotism, and the killing of innocent people, just to name a few. The groups’ demands include, but are not limited to, the resignations of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the chief minister of Punjab, Shehbaz Sharif. The demonstrations began as peaceful sitins in front of the parliament building. On August 30, however, violent clashes broke out between police and protesters. To date,

three people have been killed, and many more are injured. Since the start of the marches, Pakistani news channels have run marathon telecasts devoted narrowly to the political crisis outside the Parliament in Islamabad. The media has ignored almost entirely Pakistan’s ballooning IDP population. Pakistan’s TV news has ignored other important events recently, as well, like the death of more than 15 people in heavy rains last month, and an attack by the Taliban on an airbase in Quetta, in Western Pakistan. Several journalists have also complained about the media’s apparent disregard for Pakistani IDPs. Even before the marches, Nasim Zehra, a prominent television anchor and newspaper columnist, was already asking if the capital’s politics were promoting indifference about Pakistan’s humanitarian crisis. Some authorities in the displaced communities are growing impatient with the government’s relief efforts. A tribal leader from North Waziristan, for example, recently threatened to march to Islamabad, if that’s what it takes to gain the country’s notice. According to Faizan Lakhani, some parents have even started naming their children born in refugee camps after the camps’ names. Understandably, displaced communities are also disappointed in the government’s relief efforts. Despite the inherent dangers of life in North Waziristan, many IDPs are even asking the state to present a timeframe for the end of its Zarb-e-Azb operation, so they can return to their homes and find some relief.

Actual change by Youth Allama Qadri won’t end rally until Sharifs ousted

By: Saima Shah , Surrey The demand for actual change is coming from the women and the youth of Pakistan. Imran or (Pakistan Tehreek Insaf) PTI is only steering the ship. The fact is that somebody goofed off with the people’s votes and consequentially, their rights. The ‪#‎AzadiMarch‬ (freedom) movement’s biggest power is women. Young middle aged or old, poor, rich, local or foreign women support Imran Khan. They support him because Imran is the only leader whose politics is motivated to benefit the people of Pakistan. Last year, in each constituency there were 50,000 to 70,000 uncountable votes in the last 2013 elections. My instinct was that Imran will have had a sweeping victory. But alas, it wasn’t so. Frankly after the last May 2013 elections I was stunned when PML-N had a sweeping landslide victory, when everyone I ever heard or spoke with voted for Imran’s party, PTI. To us, used to watching the falseness of Pakistani democracy, it was obvious that the scale of rigging was huge--I think it was downright cheesy that ‘they’ predictably gave the Northern province KPP to him-(ethnically he is Pathan). We unfortunate Pakistanis are so used to not having a real freedom--we know that in Pakistan freedom is about who has more money. We have ac-

cepted that for 67 years...and perhaps we would have continued--except that Imran gave us a voice and a platform to use it. Imran could have just kept his power in KPP, but he is Imran, not like the old politicians who settle for power over performance. Since Imran doesn’t care about power for the sake of power, he couldn’t be shut up and he is willing to give up all his privileges and powers in order to obtain justice for the people--What I value is that the risk to his personal political career did not stop him. His courage is to be saluted and venerated. His rationale is that the people of Pakistan deserve to know the answers about who, how and why rigging was done. Another reason why people continue to stand in #AzadiSquare (Freedom Square) in Islamabad and the movement is expanding to TeenTalwar in Karachi, is about the corruption of the Nawaz Sharif clan that

remains unresolved in the current equation--despite people’s push to remove corruption. In the last elections, PTI’s support came because of their anti-corruption stance. People want to know about when, Nawaz Sharif, the current Prime Minister, who has installed all his family members in high positions in governance will pay true taxes on his real wealth? when will he declare his income? when will all his relatives declare income? when will Pakistanis have access to clean water, schools and healthcare?. When will the poor have 2 square meals a day? or free education?. People believe that governments funds and resources are expropriated to make money for the Nawaz Sharif clan’s huge businesses, while the people of Pakistan suffer from lack of clean water, electricity shortages,

lack of schools and constant daily violence between the various corrupt political factions of society. People voted for PTI to resolve this--but the rigged elections did not give them the power to do anything much to change the culture of corruption. Instead these results seem to suggest a strategy of co-opting PTI into the same power dynamic that people dislike. The reason why Pakistani women stand with Imran over the last 8 days because they feel only he can deliver what they

want--a free and fair democratic system, where people can work together to resolve their problems. What they ask for is what any humanbeing on this planet would want--for their right of vote to be respected. Right now the power players have tried to scare us about Imran, but our instincts are too strong. As a person, Imran’s character is impeccable. To this day Imran’s ex-wife, mother of his children, Jemima Khan supports Imran and remembers her 9 years in Pakistan with affection. In his entire 18 years of activism for anti-corruption, not one person has accused him of misuse of public funds or any misconduct. If you are afraid about what democracy in Pakistan would mean, then please see the million people who have stood up to defend their rights---nobody can bottle up this genie and control it. This is the will of the people.

Rejecting rumours that the PAT was calling off its sit-in, Tahirul Qadri said Wednesday that “we will not move from here unless this government is ousted from power”. Talking to the participants of his sit-in, Qadri said that “he would neither cave in to tyranny and oppression nor compromise”. He reiterated that the PAT would not back off from its demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. “I reject rumours that we are calling off our sit-in,” he maintained. The PAT leader said that Monday’s attack on the PTV was carried out by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and responsibility lies with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the federal ministers. He claimed that PMLN’s trained “Gullu Butts”, a reference to a ruffian said to be a PML-N worker who vandalised public property during a clash between police and Minhajul Quran workers in Lahore, were responsible for the attack. The PAT leader also threatened the opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah to watch himself otherwise things may get out of hand. “Your party has been accused of breaking up Pakistan into two,” Qadri said to Shah. “Shah is giving patronage to terrorists in Sindh.” Qadri also requested the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Zardari to tell Khursheed Shah to watch his tongue. “I was president of Awami Ittehad

the FIR in the Model Town incident haven’t been arrested as yet. “Their names should be placed on the ECL,” he demanded. Qadri has said that the judicial commission has declared CM Shahbaz Sharif to be responsible of the Model Town carnage and if this is a democratic government then it must present the commission’s report in the parliament today (Thursday). He said that people criticize us and say there are only a few thousand people present at the sit-in, adding, “I ask them to release our 25000 workers and to remove blockades, I will show them a gathering of millions within three days”. The PAT chief also shown the pictures of PML-N attacked on parliament house, supreme court building and also in president house in various occasions. He also claimed that he had a lot of evidence of undemocratic steps taken by the PMLN in the past and will show more next day. Lashing out at the PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Dr Tahirul Qadri said when the Quaid-e-Azam Residency was bombed in Ziarat, his party’s secretary general had said, “Today we have erased a symbol of imperialism” and inquired him, “Do you consider Muhammad Ali Jinnah a symbol of imperialism”. The PAT chief urged residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi to send toys and books for children. Qadri requested Sheikh Rasheed to appeal the people of the twin cities to

and PPP carried out its struggle under my leadership, Benazir was member of Minhajul Quran” he claimed. He asked who is Khursheed Shah to raise fingers over them being democratic. “PPP may not like my criticism, but it needs to shut up opposition leader Khursheed Shah,” he said. “I ask Shah to hold his tongue otherwise I will expose the PPP.” He said that the PPP leaders Aitzaz Ahsan, Lateef Khosa and Qamar Zaman Kaira also expressed difference of opinion with PAT, but they never used foul language. Qadri questioned why those mentioned in

take care of the needs of the participants at the sit-in, especially the children and to provide them necessary items. Qadri asked his workers to vacate parliament lawn till today (Thursday) adding that Supreme Court has asked Sheik Rashid Ahmad to request sit-in to vacate the parliament premises. Qadri said that the PAT and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were united in their battle. He asked Imran Khan “to become coach as he wants to play cricket” Source: Daily Times

NHL denies expansion report

Is Toronto getting a second NHL team by 2017? A tweet by Howard Bloom of @ SportsBizNews late Tuesday night suggested that the NHL will expand by four teams in three years, with new franchises in Seattle, Las Vegas, Quebec City and Toronto. The league would get a total of $1.4 billion in expansion fees, according to the tweet. The NHL shot down the report Wednesday morning. “Not in our plans. Nothing new to report on expansion,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told TVA sports. “No,” Daly told the Star when asked if the league would comment. The four cities have been mentioned every time there’s talk of expansion in the NHL but it would be surprising

that all four would get a team at once. The NHL has 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 in the West which has led to speculation that the league would be interested in adding two teams to balance the two conferences, making Seattle and Las Vegas attractive markets. The Vancouver Province reported Tuesday that an expansion team in Las Vegas is a “done deal.” In Seattle, billionaire Victor Coleman and Seattle-based Chris Hansen reportedly have an agreement in place regarding NHL expansion. Local government, however, is more interested in bringing an NBA team back to Seattle first, a project also involving Hansen. Unlike other potential NHL desti-

nations such as Quebec City and Las Vegas, Seattle does not have any current plans to build a new arena. The NHL hasn’t expanded in almost 15 years, since Columbus and Minnesota were added in 2000. Last season, while reportedly scouting Target Field and TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis as sites for future outdoor games, commissioner Gary Bettman told the Star Tribune: “There’s a lot of interest (in expansion). We’re hearing from multiple groups in Seattle . . . and in Vegas, in Kansas City and Quebec City. We haven’t decided to engage in formal expansion process, but as we always do, we listen to expressions of interest. There may be good reasons to expand,

there may not be. It’s not something we’ve seriously considered yet.” Any expansion from 30 teams would require approval from the board of governors. Source : The Star

PCB summons Misbah, Waqar for review

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan has summoned Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq and the head coach Waqar Younis to the

Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday for a review of the team’s performances in Sri Lanka. Shaharyar will meet the team manager Moin Khan in Karachi on Wednesday. Pakistan lost the Test series 2-0 and the ODIs 2-1 to Sri Lanka, prompting concern from the board ahead of the 2015 World Cup. ESPNcricinfo understands the meetings will be on a one-on-one basis. Misbah

has Shaharyar’s backing for the captaincy ahead of series in the UAE against Australia and New Zealand, but the PCB could reduce the 10-man coaching staff. Moin’s dual role as manager and chief selector is also under scrutiny. The pool of players that traveled to Sri Lanka remains the nucleus of the World Cup probables but the PCB is concerned about team unity, which according to one official, had deteriorated. With less than six months to go to the tournament, the PCB is reluctant to make major changes, and Moin had said Misbah would stay captain until the World Cup. However, ESPNcricinfo understands some players are not in favour of such a view. The PCB persisted with Misbah as captain despite Pakistan being whitewashed 3-0 in South Africa in 2012-13, and performing poorly in the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. This

was largely because of his prolific form in 2013, when he was the top-scorer in ODIs. However, he is 40 now, and his form has not been as good in 2014. There has been speculation in the media that a lobby is trying to bring about a change in captain, with Shahid Afridi being proposed as the favourite. Afridi’s form, however, has been poor. He has been wicketless in his last six ODIs and his batting is unpredictable. Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf was one of the voices advocating Afridi as captain. “If the captaincy remains with Misbah you can’t expect improvement in results,” Yousuf said. “He has been the captain for four years and has not been able to find a proper combination. I think it is imperative we have Afridi, who is aggressive and can lead in a better way.” Source: Cricinfo
