Deadly flooding in India and Pakistan It makes these annual disasters all the more tragic that for most of the year both countries have little rain. Yet after leaving hundreds dead and a swathe of destruction on both sides of the border, much of the water dumped on the Kashmir and Punjab regions in the past 10 days will now be wasted. Critics say both the Indian and Pakistani governments have repeatedly failed to act on lessons from the past on how to manage their yearly monsoon drenching, even as flood catastrophes become more frequent. While the two governments are now being battered by complaints over the relief effort, more important in the long-term, water specialists say, is building a better system to capture each new deluge. Much of the water that has inundated Pakistan’s Punjab in this latest disaster came via rivers which originate in the Indian Himalayas, where there has been even more rain. Flooding destroys nearly 2,000 schools in Punjab

An estimated 2,000 schools were destroyed across Punjab, the country’s worst-hit province in 2014’s spell of heavy rains and floods that have left 318 people dead and more than 500 injured, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said. Punjab has been the worst-hit province due to rains and floods, where more than 1.7 million of the population is affected. According to the NDMA, nearly 17,000 houses have been fully destroyed. Over 1,900 schools across the province were also damaged and remained non-operational. According to media reports, 250 schools were affected in Punjab’s Jhang district alone. On the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, NDMA in collaboration with humanitarian organisations has initiated an assessment drive to calculate damages in the districts of Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Jhang and Multan. The premier has been making daily visits to the flood-affected areas, promising aid and rehabilitation to the displaced people. Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan had received assistance for rehabilitation of flood victims from other countries and international agencies but the

Punjab Agriculture Minister Dr Farrukh Javed on Wednesday said that the government would financially compensate growers whose crops were destroyed during recent devastating floods across the province. “Agriculture department on the instructions of chief minister Punjab has already constituted various committees to assess losses incurred by farmers,” he said. The minister said the government had released huge amount for disbursement among farmers losing crops owing to floods. “Cash payments are being made to enable them to stand on their feet,” he said adding, “Agricultural equipment will be provided, along with soft term loans.” The Flood Forecasting Division Lahore has intimated that according to latest hydrological conditions and breaching of embankments between Qadirabad and Punjnad on River Chenab, the risk of high to very high flood levels at Guddu and Sukkur has decreased. As a result, River Indus at Guddu and Sukkur may attain medium to high flood levels ranging between 400,000 cusecs to 500,000 cusecs from September 16 to 18. The expected water level in Sindh is likely to remain low because of several breaches in Punjab, reports Radio Pakistan. Source: APP

Accepting Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s appeal, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday gave a nod to the former to review ballot in NA-122, the constituency in Lahore he had lost to NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of the ruling PML-N, Dawn News reported. The NA-122 is one of the four constituencies where the PTI had sought a recount and verification of voters’ thumb impressions. Sadiq had defeated Khan in the 2013 general elections and the PTI challenged the results. Khan had alleged massive rigging after losing to Sadiq in May last year. His appeals of vote recount had been dismissed by the returning officer and the election tribunal also. Briefing media representatives after an important meeting

at the ECP headquarters today, a spokesman of the Election Commission said that Imran Khan can now inspect ballot papers and counter file of the constituency. He said that the commission has decided to take the electoral material into its custody, adding that ‘strong stores’ would be set up at all four provincial offices of the ECP. Commenting on the issue of delimitation of constituencies, the ECP spokesman said that a constitutional amendment and a fresh census were prerequisites to carry out the process of delimitation. He said the commission would submit its viewpoint on the proposed law in written. He said that the decision of appointing Returning Officers (ROs) was not solely taken by then chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, but the judicial commission formed on the matter also requested for the same. The spokesman said that a meeting has been called next week to discuss the issue of local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Imran Khan had claimed that during an investigation into the vote count in PP-147 which fell under NA-122, evidences of wrongdoing had been found. It revealed that in six polling stations opened up, 3,267 of the 4,726 votes could not be verified. According to the PTI chairman, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) had found that CNIC numbers written on 696 vote counterfoils were fake. Besides.

Pakistan lodges ‘protest’ with Afghanistan on cross-border attack Pakistan on Wednesday strongly protested with Afghanistan over Tuesday’s terrorist attack from across the border in North Waziristan Agency (NWA). In a statement on Wednesday, the Foreign Office spokesperson said that a strong protest has been lodged with Afghanistan over a physical attack launched by terrorists from across the border in the NWA. The spokesperson said that 90-100 terrorists entered Pakistan territory on September 16 from recently-established sanctuaries and safe

havens across the border in Afghanistan’s Khost Province opposite North Waziristan Agency. The attack was successfully repulsed by Pakistani troops, inflicting casualties on terrorists, who fled back to Afghanistan leaving behind three bodies, the spokesperson said, adding that four Pakistani soldiers also embraced martyrdom while repulsing the attack. The spokesperson said that serious concerns were conveyed to the Afghan side on devel-

oping threats from the recently-established sanctuaries in their Khost and Paktika Provinces. She said that it was reiterated that at a time when Pakistani authorities were undertaking a monumental effort against terrorists through Operation Zarb-e-Azb, all possible cooperation was expected from the Afghan side that must take tangible steps to eliminate these sanctuaries and safe havens to avoid recurrence of such attacks. World leaders pledge to Deal reached to rebuild help Iraq fight ISIL war-ravaged Gaza

Thirty countries have pledged to help Iraq in the fight the al-Qaeda breakaway group ISIL “by any means necessary”, as leaders gathered to discuss their strategy. French president Francois Hollande called for a global response to counter ISIL on Monday, as he opened a conference on Iraq, bringing together members of a US-led coalition. “[The threat] is global so the response must be global,” the French leader said, at a Paris conference aimed at coordinating a strategy against the group, which controls parts of northern Iraq and Syria. Foreign ministers from the main European states, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Iraq’s neighbours and Gulf Arab states Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE, are in Paris to discuss broad political, security and humanitarian aspects of tackling ISIL. In holding this conference, the countries meeting today are showing their solidarity and the will to protect themselves against terrorism,” Hollande added in a joint news conference with Iraqi president Fouad Massoum. Massoum said ISIL fighters were responsible for some of the worst atrocities committed in Iraq’s history. “We should spend more efforts, and therefore we ask to continue the air strikes against the terrorist positions. We will not give them any safe haven,” Massoum added. Al Jazeera’s

Nadim Baba, reporting from Paris, said that the statements released by the two leaders were not specific in terms of military action. “What is really crucial is not who is going to carry out the air strikes but who will provide financial and military assistance.” The conference convened as Tehran claimed it had rejected a US request to cooperate against ISIL, citing Washington’s “evil intentions”, despite the US insisting it would not coordinate militarily with Iran. “The United States asked through its ambassador in Iraq whether we could cooperate against [ISIL]... I said no, because they have dirty hands,” said Iran’s leading religious and political figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. French officials say the coalition against ISIL must go beyond military and humanitarian action, arguing there must also be a political plan for once ISIL has been weakened in Iraq. They argue that the 2003 US-led intervention in Iraq, in which Paris did not participate, ultimately contributed to the current crisis. France has said it is ready to join US air attacks in Iraq but says legal and military limitations make it more difficult in Syria, where ISIL’s main power base lies. French aircraft will begin reconnaissance flights over Iraq on Monday at the request of the Iraqi government. Source: Al-Jazeera

The United Nations, Israel and the Palestinian Authority have reached a stop-gap deal to allow reconstruction work to begin in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, UN Middle East envoy Robert Serry has said. The deal on Tuesday came as a World Bank report outlined dire economic prospects for Palestinians after the July-August conflict with Israel. The UN-sponsored reconstruction agreement could help curb Palestinian economic deterioration in Gaza, which since 2007 has been controlled by Hamas. Serry described the deal as temporary, and urged its speedy implementation. “[This] must get up and running without delay, as an important step towards the objective of lifting all remaining closures, and a signal of hope to the people of Gaza,” he said, predicting that donor confidence would also be boosted. Serry said the UN brokered the deal “to enable work at the scale required in the Strip, involving the private sector in Gaza and giving a lead role to the Palestinian Authority in the reconstruction effort.” The agreement would provide “security assurances through UN monitoring that these materials will not be diverted from their entirely civilian purpose,” Serry added, apparently alluding to Israeli demands that cement and other imports not be used to build Hamas command bunkers or cross-border attack tunnels. raeli side, 66 Israeli soldiers and five civilians were killed in battles with Palestinian fighters. Israeli bombing turned large areas of the Mediterranean enclave of 1.8 million people to rubble. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a recent report that reconstruction work would cost $7.8 billion - two and a half times Gaza’s gross domestic product - including $2.5 billion for the reconstruction of homes. The World Bank said on Tuesday that the war would contribute to a reversal of seven years of growth in the Palestinian economy, now expected to shrink by nearly four percent this year. The bank also said the downturn was also a result of restrictions on the flow of goods into Gaza by Israel and neighbouring Egypt, and a drop in foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority. Gaza’s economic growth, spurred largely by international donor funds, has been decelerating since 2012 and slowed to less than 2 percent in 2013 but could rebound strongly in 2015 if Gaza reconstruction gets under way, the bank said. “The conflict and humanitarian tragedy in Gaza has made an already struggling Palestinian economy worse and put further stress on the fiscal situation of the Palestinian Authority (PA),” the report said. Egypt will host a donors’ conference on October 12 to raise reconstruction funds, and donor nations to the Palestinian Authority are due to convene on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week in New York. cess to online communications by users of Yahoo. Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden disclosed the programme last year. Yahoo said it was committed to protecting users’ data and that it will continue to contest requests and laws that it considers unlawful, unclear or overly broad. “We consider this an important win for transparency, and hope that these records help promote informed discussion about the relationship between privacy, due process and intelligence gathering,” said Bell. The newly released documents show that the Bush administration was taking a hard line and was miffed that Yahoo had even been allowed to get into court with its complaint. “It’s always been a little bit behind the curtain as to what Internet companies do when they actually receive these requests. Now we have evidence that Yahoo did in fact fight this battle and look at considerable fines as a consequence of not disclosing the data,” said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. “It tells us how very serious the Bush administration was about trying to get the Internet firms to turn over this data. Until the disclosure, it was mostly hearsay that they were willing to impose these penalties,” he was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying. “That’s heavy handed,” he added, referring to the threat of fines. US to strike ISIL ‘sanctuaries’ in Syria

On a bustling street in this city near the border with Syria, a tiny boy among other children peddling cigarettes tries to sell chocolate biscuits in a box. “Would you buy one?” he keeps asking, while pulling his loose, dirty trousers up to his thin waist. Sevenyear-old Atman Khalil is the youngest member of his family, having fled its war-torn hometown of Tariq al-Bab, in Aleppo, to take refuge in Turkey. Khalil’s father is sick, and the family now depends on the children to provide for them. With his 10-year-old sister Aysha, and cousin Suad Khalef, each child earns around $10 if they can sell all their biscuits. The Khalil and Khalef families are only two of countless Syrian refugee families now living in Turkey. Turkey’s Disaster & Emergency Management office (AFAD), the government body responsible for Syrian refugees in Turkey, estimates that the number of Syrians in Turkey exceeded 900,000 as of April 2014. Approximately 220,000 live in refugee camps, while others are scattered in cities across the country. Many Syrian refugees do not speak Turkish, making finding a job difficult. They also do not have legal status to work in Turkey, meaning that many end up in the informal labour market. In the span of about two weeks, Al Jazeera met with nearly one hundred Syrian families in five different Turkish cities. Every family either had at least one child, aged between seven and 18, working, or else all the family members were unemployed. AFAD did not respond to repeated Al Jazeera requests for comment on the conditions of Syrian children in Turkey. The United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF] works in close cooperation with the Turkish governmental body on the conditions of Syrian refugee children. Dr Ayman Abulaban, the UNICEF representative in Turkey, said at least 50 percent of Syrian refugees in Turkey are under 18. Umran Khilal, 12, and Hassan al-Ghanim, 15, are among the Syrian refugees who live outside of the official refugee camps in Turkey. The Khilal family is from the Al Muyassar neighbourhood in Aleppo, but now lives in Kilis in a shop located on the ground floor of a building. Khilal and al-Ghanim sell smuggled cigarettes from Syria. Every day, the youth leave early in the morning and come back at around 6:30pm local time. Thirteen-yearold Omar Khatib, from Hama, is meant to be in the eighth grade. After fleeing many areas of Syria, his family finally ended up in the Turkish capital, Ankara. They settled in an urban transformation area, dotted with abandoned and partly-demolished houses. The family’s monthly rent is $125. One of eight

siblings, Omar and one of his older brothers are responsible for the livelihood of the family. His brother occasionally works at construction sites, while Omar has been earning money for the past six months by collecting and selling scrap metal, papers and plastics out of the garbage. According to the United Nations, “some 70 percent of Syrian children outside camps are not accessing any form of education” in Turkey. No longer in school, Omar earns roughly $150-$200 per month working. “I do not have friends here. They are far ahead of me [at school] and I am left behind, left behind in life,” he said. Syrian refugees joining the informal labour market in Turkey has pushed wages down, which has increased resentment among the local population, wrote Kemal Kirisci in a brief for the Brookings Institute. “Current Turkish labour laws make it very difficult for Syrian refugees to obtain work permits and seek employment in the formal economy,” he found. Amir Akdag is chairman of the city council’s Committee for Monitoring and Preventing Child Labour in the southeast province of Adana. He said that Syrian refugee children are working in a variety of non-regulated jobs, including handling dangerous equipment and strenuous manual labour. Dozens of children live at the workers camp in Adana. With dirty faces and unwashed hair, they live next to an open sewer. The camp’s only source of clean water is a nearby well. The youngest of the child workers is seven-years-old. Ibrahim Cerrah, 13, works in the fields. His family had its own land in Hama, Syria, but he never had to work, he said. “Working with pickaxes and shovels is hard. My shoulders and feet always ache,” he said. In his family, all children aged ten and above have to work. Ibrahim earns $15 a day for 11 hours of pick-axing. He does not have many friends at the camp, and says people at the camp do not like Syrians. In a poorly-lit basement in Istanbul, Muhammad Ahmad, 14, bustles around busily as he spends at least 11 hours in a mould-smelling, dusty illegal textile manufactory. His job is to pick up, arrange and carry the clothes and earns around $250 a month. His family used to live in Aleppo but moved to the Kurdish-controlled district of Afrin when the conflict escalated. Ahmad came to Istanbul with his two uncles. Along with other older men, he shares a lowceilinged bachelor room, with no bathroom or kitchen. The family has debt and Ahmad must work to pay it off. “Life brought us to Istanbul,” he said. Ukraine Ratifies E.U. Deal That Triggered Russia Conflict

Ukraine’s parliament ratified an agreement to deepen economic and political ties with the European Union on Tuesday, and passed legislation to grant autonomy to the rebellious east as part of a peace deal. The ratification vote, draws a line under the issue that last year sparked Ukraine’s crisis, which resulted in the ousting of the president, the annexation of Crimea by Russia and a war with the Russia-backed separatists that has killed more than 3,000 people. The ratification vote in Kyiv, synchronized with the European parliament by video chat, was met with a standing ovation, and members of parliament leapt to their feet to sing the Ukrainian national anthem. In a speech to legislators, President Petro Poroshenko called the vote a “first but very decisive step” toward bringing Ukraine fully into the European Union. Poroshenko also said that those who died during the protests and during fighting in the east “gave up their lives so that we could take a dignified place among the European family.” “Since World War II, not a single nation has paid such a high price for their right to be European,” he said. In Brussels, EU lawmakers overwhelmingly ratified the agreement. “The message this sends could not be clearer: the European Parliament supports Ukraine in its European vocation,” said Martin Schulz, the president of the EU Parliament. “The European Parliament will continue defending a united and sovereign Ukraine,” he said. In stark contrast to that fanfare, parliament went behind closed doors earlier in the day to approve two bills granting greater autonomy to rebellious regions in the east, as well as amnesty for many of those involved in the fighting. One bill calls for three years of self-rule in parts of the war-torn east and calls for local elections in November. It grants concessions that were not offered in a presidential peace plan that was put forward in June, such as local oversight on court and prosecutor appointments and local control of police forces. A separate bill called for amnesty for those involved in the eastern conflict, although the law does not cover those who are suspected or charged with several dozen crimes including murder, sabotage, rape, kidnapping, and terrorism. The law also does not grant amnesty to those who have attempted to kill Ukrainian law enforcement officials and servicemen — meaning that most of the separatists, who have waged war for five months on government forces, would not fall under amnesty. The two bills are part of a peace

agreement that called for the implementation of a ceasefire in the region on Sept. 5. But the legislators’ decision to hold a closeddoor session — an anomaly in Ukrainian parliament — underscores the political challenges of allowing greater autonomy for the east. Many in Ukraine fear that Russia will use decentralization to bolster its influence in the region and further destabilize Ukraine. Rebel commander Alexander Zakharchenko told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency that the separatist leadership would study the measures, an unusually conciliatory statement compared to the rebels’ previous claims that they aim for complete independence from Ukraine. Though much lauded by the Ukrainian leadership, the ceasefire has been riddled by violations from the start. On Tuesday, the city council in Donetsk said three people and five wounded in shelling overnight. Col. Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s national security council, said three Ukrainian servicemen were killed over the past day. Clashes continue in the area around the airport in Donetsk, the largest city under rebel control. The EU association agreement was long sought by Ukrainians who want their country to turn westward and out of Russia’s sphere of influence. After then-President Viktor Yanukovych shelved the deal last year, protests broke out that eventually spiralled into violence and led to Yanukovych fleeing the country. In the wake of that, Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula and a pro-Russia rebellion broke out in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces in April launched a military operation to put down the rebellion, which it claims gets substantial support including troops and equipment from Russia. Russia strongly opposed Ukraine’s tilt toward the EU, hoping to bring the country into a Moscow-led trade bloc that would balance or compete with the EU. Ukrainians who sought closer ties with the Western bloc denounced the Russia-led trade bloc as an attempt to reconstitute the Soviet Union. Moscow also feared that closer ties with the EU and the reduction of tariffs on Western goods would undermine Ukraine’s demand for Russian goods and could allow the re-export to Russia of EU goods at lower prices. In a significant concession to Russia, Ukraine and the EU agreed last week to delay the full reciprocal implementation of a reduced-tariff regime that is part of the agreement until at least 2016. Fijians vote in first poll since 2006 coup

Polling booths have opened in Fiji’s first election since a 2006 military coup, with police reporting no early problems and a festive atmosphere prevailing in the South Pacific nation’s capital. Long queues formed before doors opened on Wednesday at 7.30am (1930 Tuesday GMT) at the Vatuwaqa Public School just outside the city centre, where military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama is expected to cast his ballot later in the day. The vote is seen as pivotal to ending the country’s “coup culture”, which saw four governments toppled between 1987 and 2006, largely due to tensions between indigenous Fijians and ethnic Indians. Irivi Draundalo, a local man who waited with hundreds of other voters outside the school, said the vote represented a return to democracy that should usher in a new era of stability. “I’m optimistic,” he told the AFP news agency. “After eight years, I’m looking forward to [voting].” “There’s been too many coups. Fiji needs a new government

with real democracy.” Some 590,000 registered voters in the population of 900,000 will have the chance to select from almost 250 candidates standing for election to a new 50seat parliament set up under a constitution adopted in 2013. While the army has been put on standby to prevent any violence, there was no evidence of trouble in Suva, where both races queued side-by-side. “It’s all going smoothly,” Fiji’s South African-born police commissioner Bernadus Groenewald told AFP during a brief visit to the school. Hajj Purifies the Sincere Ones Only

The annual Hajj performance by the Muslims is in a way a marvellous opportunity to bring them together from all over the world to worship Allah the Almighty at one geographical location in a well organized manner. The massive gathering of three or more millions of Muslims at one common place of religious worship is, indeed, a confirmatory; the commendable step that gears up integration and solidarity in the different shades of the Muslim Umma. Naturally, if the Muslims from different parts of the World gather together and interact with one another as the members of the same family, the feelings and mindset of oneness is developed leading to an emotionalised atmosphere of relationship amongst them. Most probably, there is no other prerequisite for the unity, affinity and harmony ever noticed of any community. One has to have an intention to perform Hajj, and then the men have to be dressed in two unhemmed white cloths, while the ladies need to be modestly dressed keeping face and hands uncovered. The rituals are to be performed the same way as done by Prophet Mohammed Sallahu Alaihi wasllam. The ritual of walking seven times counter clockwise around the Kabah is called Tawaaf. Then, there is running or walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. The throwing of pebbles at “Jamarat” is to signify the defiance of the devil and is an expression of the pilgrim’s intention to obey Allah’s commandment, and is a demonstration of his humility and servitude to Him. The slaughtering of the animals and shaving or clipping of the hair

are the actions that signify about the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). The annual Hajj also is famous for teaching discipline and forbearance to all participants. In fact, the observance of the rites of Hajj in the faithful manner keeps the pilgrims very close to the purity of mind, and that’s the solitary mode to acquire the vicinity of God Almighty, indeed. Furthermore, the Hajj is the world’s greatest example of eliminating social discrimination and any other human differences. It’s based on the fact that all mankind is from Adam and Eve: An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; white has no superiority over black, nor does a black have any superiority over white; actually, none has superiority over another except by piety and good action, said the prophet during his last sermon at Arafat valley during his only hajj, as he performed Hajj just once. While delivering his sermon, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) advised the Hujjaj, “Regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust, return the goods to their rightful owners, and hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.” He said further, “Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived, your capital, however, is yours to keep, you will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity.” “Beware of Satan, for the safety of

your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.” “Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste. O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat. Perform Hajj, if you have the means.” The prophet said, “I leave behind me two things, the Qur’an and my example, the Sunnah, and if you follow these you will never go astray.” Nevertheless, let’s remember - the Hajj, the Sacrifice and all Ibaadah may be nullified, if we tend to rejoin the sinful life. This means if our attitude doesn’t change, Allah will never help us achieve our Islamic purpose of life. Obviously, if we are not careful enough, the element of hypocrisy in our thoughts and actions is more than sufficient to ruin our effort of connecting to our Creator/Lord. Moreover, the disease of hypocrisy attacks those weaker ones who fail to maintain TAQWA, and those who don’t follow the Qur’an and Sunnah; hence are at greater risk. Since, the polluted thoughts lead to social vices 24/7; we must resist them to maintain good connection with our Creator. The problem is some people go for Hajj, yet, they don’t hesitate to indulge in arguments, fights; or lose talk; hence are liable for maintaining the stinky environment around

Teachers Strike in BC

By: Mehboob Hajee Surrey I am surprised that so far the teachers have not started offering private tuition from their homes, thereby thumbing their noses at Christy I am also surprised that more parents, especially those that have one parent at home during school hors, have not opted for Home schooling. British Columbians were fools to reelect Christy after all that Gordon Campbell did to deserve their ire. Let us not make the same mistake again in the forthcoming elections.

The Surrey District Parent Advisory Council is urging parents in Surrey By: Bob Holmes Surrey The Surrey District Parent Advisory Council is urging parents in Surrey, and throughout the province, to make their voices heard in the ongoing labour dispute. Surrey students are now entering their 91st day out of school, with no end in sight.

“Parents have different viewpoints about who is to blame for the current situation, but I think they can all agree that they want students back in school as soon as possible”, said Bob Holmes, Surrey DPAC Co-President. “Whatever each parent’s views are, we’d like to see them contacting the parties in this dispute to let them know how they feel, whether it’s their MLA, the Premier and relevant Ministers, the Teacher’s Federation and Associations, or all of the above. The message needs to be delivered forcefully, but respectfully, that while we can fully appreciate what is being fought for, our children need to be back in school rather than caught in the middle for the third time in the last four years.” A group of Surrey parents are organizing their third rally this Sunday, September 14th, at 5:00 PM in Holland Park - 13428 Old Yale Road, Surrey. Surrey DPAC will be there supporting parents, and hope to see even more parents turn out than the 2-300 that attended the rally last weekend.

them. Furthermore, it’s usually seen that some people during Tawaaf (fard) love to violate the general atmosphere by committing short cuts to reach for kissing the black stone (hajr-e-aswad) which is just a sunnah. Accidents do happen with this nonsense. If there is no self discipline, there is no Ibaaddah. If selfishness is allowed to frustrate the others, how is the hajj valid then? However, on the other hand, the true believers behave well with utmost patience despite the odds. From the very start, they observe calmness and when they return after hajj, they are really transformed into good citizens and they are Sin Free like a newly born baby. May Allah (SWT) enable all the Hujjaaj to perform the hajj within the allowed parameters. May He accept the Hajj of all pilgrims this year and help them return home safely in good spiritual purity and a sound physical health as well.(Ameen). All others should still take the message based on the Prophet Muhammad’s last sermon leading to more unity among the members of Muslim community all over the globe enabling them to have selfcontrol and unconditional submission to Allah (SWT). Certainly, if the Islamic values are appropriately observed and practised sincerely, beyond doubt, there is a real understanding of the significance of Hajj and Eid-ulAdha. . Waan laysa lil insani

The school teachers across the province of British Columbia are on indefinite strike for the last about three months and our kids in those schools along with their parents are eagerly awaiting the start of their regular classes after the culmination of their summer vacation. The principal two-fold demands of the teachers are the increase of their salary and cutting short of the size of the classes. Since the management is not acceding to their demands, the teachers are reluctant to resume their work, with the result that there are no regular classes and the kids alone are made to suffer owing to this stalemate condition, which knows no termination for the time being at least. The net outcome, in short, is that they are the kids alone who are made to suffer because of the tug of war currently going on in between the teachers and the administration. How long the supra stalemate condition will continue to rule over the indeterminate future of the kids is unknown at the moment. In this backdrop, the involvement of the parents and guardians of their wards becomes imperative to bring this impasse to an end, so that the future of the young ones is not put to stake. Become conscious of this factor and to send an alerting message to the teachers as well as the administration a commendable step of the parents’ walk was organized on the evening of September 9 at the Holland Park, opposite the King George Sky Train Station in Surrey, BC. Al-

illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

though apparently the demonstration under reference was, undeniably, praiseworthy act of the individuals organizing this walk, nonetheless, it was not enough for the purpose of finding an amicable solution to the problem. Besides, it is highly imperative for the parents and guardians to be highly proactive so as to adopt immediately the initiative to sit across the table along with the teachers and management to hunt out at some plausible solution to this vexatious problem and contribute their might to the highest extent in providing a productive backing in the opening of the schools at the earliest possible in order to safeguard the future of their kids. Let it not be lost sight of that this matter is of extraordinary serious nature, because further delay in the opening of the schools may be very extremely detrimental to the further prospects of those students at least who are at the edge of joining the colleges/ universities and who may mislay one precious year of their lives. Hence, the teachers, the administration and the parents ought to take this important fact into consideration and must adopt a very considerate and well thought of approach for the instantaneous solution of this delinquent situation.

A D FVAE I RT THI S E R Volume 2, Book 26, Number 594: Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet was asked, “Which is the best deed?” He said, “To believe in Allah and His Apostle.” He was then asked, “Which is the next (in goodness)?” He said, “To participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.” He was then asked, “Which is the next?” He said, “To perform Hajj-Mabrur. “

By: Imam Ivan G. Nassar “O People, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QURAN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray.” The Prophet’s last Sermon delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul Hijjah 10 A.H in the Uranah Valley of Mount Arafat. Who is the model for humanity? Most positively, it is none other than the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). “You have indeed in the messenger of Allah a good example for those of you who look to Allah and the Last Day, and remember Allah always.” (Qur’an 33:21). The prophet (pbuh) engaged the Qur’an at a deep spiritual level, lady ‘Aisha, Mother of The Faithful described his character as a likeness of the Qur’an. In her words she said, “He was the Qur’an walking.” The Prophet’s Sunnah constitutes a major source of guidance for Muslims and the second source of Islamic jurisprudence. “And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, leave it.” (Qur’an 59:7). Undoubtedly, The first source of Islamic jurisprudence is the noble Qur’an. “By the Qur’an, full of Wisdom... “ (Qur’an 36:2). Both sources are an indispensable stream in which a fountainhead of divine knowledge gushes forth; one cannot practice Islam without bathing in its prevailing currents. Beyond any doubt, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) practiced the principals of the noble Qur’an; on every occasion, he always spoke the best words in the

The Adab (Manners) of The Prophet (pbuh)

best manner; whether he was conveying a general application of knowledge to a large group of people or imparting practical knowledge to an individual. The following is an example of the Prophet (pbuh) applying a general application of knowledge, when countless Muslims were present. This account is from the prophet’s last Sermon: “All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not; therefore, do injustice to yourselves.” Numerous narratives from the Sunnah provide us with many illustrations where the prophet (pbuh) utilized his prophetic skills while applying a practical application of knowledge to individuals who came seeking divine guidance: Narrated by Abu Aiyub AlAnsari: A man said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Inform me of a deed which will make me enter Paradise.” The people said, “What is the matter with him? What is the matter with him?” Allah’s Apostle said, “He has something to ask (what he needs greatly). The Prophet said (to him) (In order to enter Paradise) you

should worship Allah and join none in worship with Him: You should offer prayers perfectly, give obligatory charity (Zakat), and keep good relations with your Kith and kin.” Narrated by Abu Huraira: A man said to the Prophet, “Advise me! “The Prophet said, “Do not become angry and furious.” The man asked (the same) repeatedly, and the Prophet said in each case, “Do not become angry and furious.” Abu Barzah al- Aslamee related, he said, “O messenger of Allah! Show me a deed that will put me in Paradise or benefit me.” He replied, “ Remove harmful things from the path of Muslims.” In the above example, each questioner asked the same basic question but received a different response to their question. This is not a conflict with the principles of the Sharia or the Sunnah. In devotional matters, questions are valued in accordance with their underlying intention. Here, each person received an answer that would be most beneficially to his or her spiritual growth. The prophet (pbuh) was an embodiment of goodness and recognized common decency in everyone, including nonbelievers. A report from the tradition states: A dog was going round a well and was about to die of thirst, an Israeli prostitute saw it and took off her shoe and watered it. So The Prophet said, “ Allah forgave her because of that good deed.” Non-Muslims who have studied the life of the Prophet extolled the virtues of his moral excellence. Mahatma Gandhi, he father of India independence stated in ‘Young India published in’1924: I wanted to know the best of the life of one who holds today an undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind. I became more than ever convinced that The Miracle repeats its series of Names of it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid Allah (SWT) &Prophet Mohammad (saw) simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the ProphNames and Meanings. In last edition we printed et the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidAl Muthkabar name of Allah(swt) and ity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in G-d and

in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the second volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of that great life. Sir George Bernard Shaw in ‘The Genuine Islam,’ Vol. One, No. 8, 1936. “If any religion had the chance of ruling over England, nay Europe within the next hundred years, it could be Islam. I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him - the wonderful man and in my opinion for from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Savior of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness: I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today.” In a hadith reported by Asmaa bint Yazeed: The Prophet said: Shall I not inform you of the best ones from amongst you? They said: Yes, indeed. He said: Those who when they are seen, then Allah is remembered. Shall I not inform you of the worst ones from amongst you? They said: Yes, indeed. He said: Those who go about carrying tales to cause mischief between friends, those who seek harm and corruption for the innocent. Testifying to his sublime character, Allah (swt) says to His beloved messenger, “And surely you are indeed of a sublime character” (Qur’an 68:4). Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet (pbuh) and His angels too (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on him, and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting) salutation, i.e. As- salaam-u- alaikum). (Qur’an 33:56) ***** Imam Ivan G. On Sep 7, The Darul Quran Academy of Canada organised a program on Seerat e Hzt. Ibrahim (A.S) in Fiji Islamic Centre in Surrey. Maulana Mohammad Saadat Nadvi was the master of ceremony. After recitation of holy Quran and Hamad o Naat, Maulana Jahangir Basheer gave the speech on life of Ibrahim (A.S).Qari Owais Wahab delivered a dynamic speech on the different aspects of life history of Prophet Ibrahim(A.s). He also said that today our youth’s idols are TV , Film or sports stars or celebrities. All are temporary, why \ they won’t make Hufaz e Karam their idols , which are everlasting. After Maghrib prayer Mufti Shujaat Ali Nadvi addressed the audience and gave lecture on the Ibadah of Ibrahim (A.S) and sacrifice in the light of Quran and Haidths. Every speaker spoke about different attributes of Ibrahim (A.S) in detail. At the end Darul Quran Academy of Canada president Maulana Abid Zafar thanked all religious scholars who gave their time for the Seerat conference of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) before the start of Hajj session. He also thanked everyone who joined and helped in Fiji Centre. The delicious dinner was served by Afghan Chopan Restaurant in Surrey.

Father of Monotheism: Abraham (A.S)was father of other prophets(Ishmail and Isaac) and the grandfather of Prophet Jacob. He is also one of the ancestors of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Abraham is recognized as a great prophet among believers in the monotheistic faiths, such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The Quran repeatedly describes the Prophet Abraham as a man who believed in One True God, and was a righteous example for us all to follow: “Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah” (Quran 3:67). Family and Community: Aazar, the father of Prophet Abraham, was a well-known idol sculptor among the people of Babylon. From a young age. Abraham recognized that the wood and stone “toys” that his father sculpted were not worthy of worship. Abraham and his wife, Sarah, traveled through Syria, Palestine, and then on to Egypt. According to the Quran, Sarah had been unable to have children, so Sarah pro-

Hate Crime Against Imam Syed Soharwardy

(Calgary) The founder of Muslims Against Terrorism and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada was assaulted on Friday in the parking lot at the Genesis Centre, 775 Falconridge Blvd., NE Calgary. After Imam Soharwardy parked his car he was walking towards the building where he leads the Friday prayer suddenly a woman who seems to be waiting for him drove her car towards him. He ran towards the side walk. The lady came out of the car and started shouting at him and called him the terrorist and a threat. She used obscenities for Muslims, immigrants and Islam. He was shaken by the incident. But due to the very tight time for the prayer Imam was in hurry to reach inside the building. He simply replied to the lady, “How can I be threat to you OR to Canada? Mr. Soharwardy does not know this woman, never met her and never interacted with her. He ignored the woman and tried to walk away. But she sat down in her car and drove towards him again. Once again she tried to hit him with the car but he narrowly escaped. At this stage Imam called 911 and reported the incident. The woman constantly used profanity and very racial slurs against the Imam and the Muslims. Mr. Soharwardy gave the description of the car and the woman and the license plate number of the car to the 911 police attendant. After the incident Mr. Soharwardy lead the prayer and informed all the worshipers about the incident. He then had to travel to Vancouver for his speaking engagement in Surrey, BC expecting that someone from Calgary Police will call him. However, no one from the Calgary Police contacted him to follow

posed that Abraham marry her servant, Hajar. Hajar gave birth to Ismail (Ishmail), who Muslims believe was Abraham’s first-born son. Abraham took Hajar and Ismail to the Arabian Peninsula. Later, Allah also blessed Sarah with a son, whom they named Ishaq (Isaac). Islamic Pilgrimage: In the Arabian Peninsula, Abraham, Hajar, and their infant son Ismail found themselves in a barren valley with no trees or water. Hajar was desperate to find water for her child, and ran repeatedly between two hillsides in her search. At last, a spring emerged and she was able to quench their thirst. This spring, called Zamzam, still runs today in Makkah, The Ka’aba itself is believed to have been rebuilt by Abraham and Ismail. There is a spot just next to the Ka’aba, called the Station of Abraham, which marks where Abraham is believed to have stood while erecting the stones to raise the wall. Islamic Prayer: “Salam (peace) be upon Abraham!” God says in the Quran (37:109). Muslims close each of the daily prayers with a du’a (supplication), asking Allah to bless Abraham and his family as follows: “Oh Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad, and

up. Today, on Mr. Soharwardy’s request, Police met with him at the SaddleRidge Police station. He provided more details of the incident. “I was shaken by this incident and horrified. Thanks God I was not hurt. If I would not have jumped on the side walk that woman would have run her car over me. It was a clear assault with weapon (car) and obviously a hate crime. She tried twice to physically attack me with her car which shows her intention to cause harm.”, Imam Syed Soharwardy told the police investigators today. Islamic Supreme Council of Canada wants Calgary Police to fully investigate the incident. This is so ironic that the person who is the most vocal against ISIS and other terrorist organizations was called “terrorist”. Imam Soharwardy founded Muslims Against Terrorism in 1998 in Calgary. “Although this incident has shaken me but it has also inspired me to do more. This shows that there are Canadians who still do not know Islam and Muslims.”, Imam Soharwardy said today. We must stand up against all forms of violence, hate and discrimination. Islamophobia is hate and cannot be tolerated. There are few Canadians who spew out hate for Muslims every day in the media and on the websites. They are the one who should be held responsible for inciting hate towards Canadian Muslims. Why the Canadian Muslims should be held responsible for the crimes of ISIS? Islamophobes use the atrocities of terrorists to create hate towards all Muslims. This must stop. On a different note, Imam Soharwardy welcomes toady’s statement of Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom. Mr. Cameron has acknowledged that Islam is the religion of Peace and ISIS terrorists are NOT Muslims. We all believe ISIS and organizations like ISIS are not Muslims. We all want these terrorists to be eliminated. Islamic Supreme Council of Canada strongly condemns the beheading of UK journalist and other reporters. The ISIS criminals must be brought to justice. We support every effort to eliminate terrorism and violence.

the followers of Muhammad, just as You sent prayers upon Abraham and the followers of Abraham. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty. Oh Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, and upon the family of Muhammad, just as You sent blessings upon Abraham, and upon the family of Abraham. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty.” OnHisSon’sSacrifice: “Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: “O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!” (The son) said: “O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!” So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah., and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice), We called out to him “O Abraham! Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!” - thus indeed do We reward those who do right. For this was obviously a trial- And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice: And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times: “Peace and salutation to Abraham!” Thus indeed do We reward those who do right. For he was one of our believing Servants. (Quran 37:102-111) Ref of contents: islam.about.com

Hon. Shuja Alam Consul General of Pakistan in BC

An Exclusive interview with

Honorable Shuja Alam Consul General of Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Vancouver is leaving after completing his 4 year tenure in BC. •The Miracle Media(TM): At the time of your departure, please let Miracle’s readers know how long have you served here in BC and how do you feel so far about BC - BC’s natural beauty, weather and the people of BC. •Honorable Consul General of Pakistan Shuja Alam: •I have completed almost four years in Vancouver and this has been my longest stay in any one particular post. It has been a privilege and an honour to have served in British Columbia. I have yet to come across a more beautiful city and what it has to offer in terms of excellent infrastructure, great health care and superb education system. However, the diverse communities living in BC are its most valuable asset. BC’s multicultural ethos, its spirit of tolerance and harmony should be cherished, celebrated and reinforced everyday. This in my mind is what makes BC one to the most desirable places in the world. •TM:What was your background and where did you serve before British Columbia? What is expected to be your next station after reporting at Pakistan Islamabad Office? •Consul General:I joined the Foreign Service in 1989 and besides Pakistan, have served in Spain, Holland, India, Italy and Nepal. I will report back to Islamabad till my next appointment. •TM: The Pakistani Community was very pleased in 2007 when this Consulate office first time opened in British Columbia. Do you feel we BC residents deserved this office sooner? •Consul General: First of all let me take this opportunity to thank all Pakistani-Canadians living in BC for their support and cooperation. Thank you for encouraging us for the services we provide and for your understanding in whatever short comings we had. The respect and love shown by the community is something that would remain with me for the rest of my life. The community has considered us a part of the family and for this we remain indebted. I am sure, you will extend the same cooperation and encouragement to my successor, Mr. Muhammad Tariq, who is due to arrive early October. The Consulate was established in 2007, in response to the efforts by the Community and our hope is to live up to your expectations in times to come. •TM: When you arrived almost four years ago, what was the workload like and now at the end of tenure, do you see a difference. What type of services are you facilitating to Canadians of Pakistani origin and other Canadians. •Consul General:The workload has increased exponentially since 2007, primarily because more and more people are availing our services. This is true in all aspects of our Consular operations, whether related to passports, NICOP, Visas or attestation. We also have a Commercial Section that assists Canadians in any business or trade related activities that they want to carry out in Pa-

kistan. Our next steps are to provide Machine Readable Passports (MRP) and a NADRA facility to provide NICOP here. We have received encouraging response from Islamabad and are hopeful that these facilities will be available later in the year or early next year. •TM: Regarding the relationship of Pakistan and Canada, what is your role in improving the BC Trade with Pakistan? •Consul General: BC’s trade with Pakistan hovers around sixty million US dollars. However, the potential is much more. We have encouraged PakistaniCanadians to trade with Pakistan. One way this could be done is that the Canadians here could become representatives of major Pakistani companies. They could get samples from Pakistan and showcase them in various trade fairs and take the products directly to Canadian Companies importing them. This does not entail any investments and could become quite profitable if pursued seriously. •TM: Is Canada a good investment opportunity for Pakistani companies, who are looking to expand their business profile? •Consul General:Pakistan is a developing country and as such its Foreign investments are limited. Canada, on the other hand is among the top ten countries in terms of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Therefore our plan is to increase Canadian FDI’s in Pakistan. As I have said repeatedly, Pakistani-Canadians have to take the lead in this. Already a number of Vancouverites of Pakistani origin have invested in Pakistan in Granite and Marble mines, in specialized hospitals in Lahore and Islamabad and in taking some of the Canadian consumer brands to Pakistan. I see this trend to continue and to gain more momentum over the next few years. •TM: As a Consul General of Pakistan your role is to protect Pakistan citizen issues in Canada, visas, economic and trade issues, cultural and diplomatic outreach, etc. Do you have any record of number of Pakistanis citizens in British Columbia and how you keep track of that? •Consul General: Coming up with accurate numbers of Pakistani-Canadian in BC is a challenge. This is true for all other Consulates in BC as well. We have encouraged Pakistani-Canadians to register at the Consulate. Accurate figures cannot be gleaned from Statistics Canada because of the nature of the Census. One can only offer educated guess and our estimates are that the population of Pakistani-Canadians is around twenty thousand in the British Columbia. •TM: I personally know that you and your team members often meet Pakistanis citizens in British Columbia and talk about their issues in Canada. What do you feel are their main concerns and how have you tried to solve them? •Consul General:Pakistani-Canadians who have been here for a while and have settled down have no major issues. Recent immigrants do have to struggle a bit till they find a regular job or establish a business of their own. Most of the new immigrants are highly skilled and have professional degrees. However, they face quite an uphill task in getting their qualifications recognised here. Most have to get additional training or qualifications to get recognition from Canadian professional organisations, whether related to doctors or engineers. I have personally taken up this issue here and in Alberta with respective Departments but since all professions are regulated by their own professional organisations with a fair degree of autonomy, there is not much that the Governments of the British Columbia could do. This remains a challenge and so far we have not been able

to address this issue to the satisfaction of all concerned. •TM: How can Non-Pakistani Canadians get Pakistani visas easily, especially most of the Sikh Community who wish to visit Pakistan at their religious places? •Consul General: The Consulate General is here to provide services to all Canadians living in Western Canada irrespective of their religion or ethnicity. Canadian-Sikhs regularly visit Pakistan to visit to holy sites in Nankana Sahib and Hassan Abdal and like any other Canadian get their visas within seven working days. •TM: How has your interaction been with other Consul Generals and different community leaders to build good relationship with Pakistan and Pakistanis here in BC? •Consul General: BC has a very active Diplomatic Corps that meets on a regular basis. However, each Consulate has a mandate to strengthen ties between the home country and the British Columbia. Nevertheless, we share our experiences and learn from each other. •TM: As you know in BC there are two main Pakistani Associations PCA and PCCA who are serving Pakistani community. What you will say about their hard work, volunteerism and dedication for community. •Consul General:Both these organisations are working for the interest of Pakistani-Canadians living in BC. They play a very important role in bringing the community together on Pakistan’s national day as well as Independence day. This provides an important link to Pakistan and also inculcates a sense of belonging among the young generation that was born and raised here. In this sense their contributions are invaluable. PCA this year celebrated its fifty years of existence. This by itself is a huge achievement. PCCA is also more that a decade old. Besides this, the Pakistan-Canada Women Association is also doing remarkable work specifically in addressing gender issues. Their contribution towards the Pakistan Festival has also been invaluable along with PCA and PCCA. The Consulate maintains very close relationship with all these organisations and continues to count on their support. •TM: Do you feel that at least all Pakistanis should celebrate Pakistan National Day (March 23), Independence Day (August 14) jointly at one place to show their strength and unity. They did so twice in 2008 and 2010 at Holland Park in Surrey but a large role was played by the efforts of Consul General office. Why has this tradition not continued at other places where expenses are minimal and projection of Pakistani products could get more exposure? •Consul General:While Pakistan National day and Independence Day celebrations are held separately, the Pakistan Festival is always held jointly. All organisations come together for the Pakistan Festival and since this is a huge event that requires a lot of resources, these organisations work tirelessly for months to put up a great show for Canadians living in Metro Vancouver. Our role is only supportive and I believe the next festival is planned for 2015. •TM: Now let’s address some of the complaints and suggestions that the local community has for Pakistan Consul office like: - Unlike some other Consul General offices, why don’t we have Pakistani Canadian receptionist in the consulate, who can easily understand Pakistanis who don’t know English and need to convey their issues ? - In celebrations like Pakistan National day and Independence Day at Consul General’s residence, attended predominantly by Pakistanis, why do we not see the officials in

Pakistani wear and why are programs not conducted at least partially in Urdu? Such practices show our culture and language to our next generation otherwise they will totally forget the values of Pakistan. - When any Pakistani Canadian submit his/ her application forms for Islamabad Services offices like NICOP card, Electronic Passport through your office, if there are any mistakes, or problems during the process, many complain that the Consulate offers very little help to resolve their complaints and problems. Why is that? •Consul General:This is a non-issue. First, all information related to all the services we provide is available on our website: www. pcgv.org. It would save us all a lot of time because the receptionist has to answer hundreds of phone calls a day to respond to queries that are already available on our website. Callers also have to wait a lot and find it difficult to get through to the receptionist. Secondly, I do not know of any Pakistani here that does not understand or communicate in English. In any case, one has to learn the language of the adopted country in order to live a productive life and assimilate in the wider Canadian society. I would not go into the details of work distribution within the Consulate as it is an internal issue. However, let me assure you that all our Pakistan based staff speaks Urdu and the receptionists can connect the odd Pakistani that has difficulty in communicating in English. Besides, dealing with the Pakistani Diaspora is an important part of a much wider mandate of the Consulate General. •This again is a non-issue. Flag-hoisting ceremonies on our National and Independence day normally fall on a working day. Since Pakistanis have to make a lot of effort to attend these ceremonies and have to get back to work, we want to keep these ceremonies short and dignified. Again I will not comment on what we wear and the language we speak, except that Lounge suit is considered a formal/official dress in Pakistan and English remains our official language. •The mistakes have to be rectified in Islamabad. All we can do is forward the request and the applicant can then track the status of the application online. However, we do follow up in cases where there is inordinate delay. •TM: At the end, it will be unfair if the Miracle does not recognise the services of rest of Pakistani Consulate team members for their hard work. What do you say about Consul Ms. Batool Kazim and other team members who are completing their tenure with you in BC. •Consul General:I am really proud of the dedication and professionalism of my colleagues. It is their hard work that has earned the Consulate the respect of the Canadians residing in Western Canada. I wish them all the best and am sure that all would continue to strive to provide timely and efficient services. •TM: Do you have any message for our readers and any thoughts for Miracle Newspaper? •Consul General:My appeal to all Pakistani-Canadians is not to underestimate your strengths, continue to integrate in the wider Canadian Society, take advantage of the excellent educational opportunities here and keep focus on the investment opportunities available in Pakistan. •Miracle provides an invaluable community service and I would encourage all to support Miracle so it could continue to expand its readership. I wish them all success in the future as well. •TM: Thanks for your time for Miracle Media. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors. Note: The Miracle Media used this opportunity to convey the community’s concerns to the Consulate and relay the Consulate’s response to them. Any further comments can be directly made to the Consulate.

B.C. teachers’ strike deal reached: Union and Liberals reach tentative agreement

By:Rich Overgaard Assistant Director Communications and Campaigns Division BC Teachers’ Federation After several days of intensive negotiations, representatives of the BC Teachers’ Federation signed an agreement-in-committee with the BC Public School Employers’ Association. The BCTF Executive Committee is recommending ratification. Teachers will vote on the agreement-in-committee on Thursday, September 18, 2014. “The tentative agreement will provide new support for students, ensure there are more specialist and classroom teachers in schools working with children, and protect teachers’ constitutional rights as the court case continues,” said BCTF President Jim Iker. “Thanks to the courageous stand teachers took on the picket lines and the strong support of parents and other unions, BC teachers were able to get new money invested in schools and reach a mutually agreed-to process to deal with any future court decision on class size, class composition, and staffing levels.” Iker outlined that the BCTF Executive Committee is recommending a “yes” vote on Thursday based on several key achievements for teachers and students in the tentative agreement: •Several hundred new teaching positions each year as a result of an annual education fund that will be used exclusively for bargaining unit members. •A mutually agreed-to process to address any future Court decision as well as the re-

moval of the contentious Article E.80. •A significant grievance remedy fund that will be used as a one-time payment to members and will provide improvements in elementary preparation time. •Improvements in salary and extended health benefits. •Fair pay for teachers teaching on call for every day they work. •There are no concessions. In announcing the Executive Committee’s recommendation, Iker thanked BC teachers for their commitment, persistence, and courage over the last few months. He also thanked the BC Federation of Labour, the Canadian Labour Congress, other unions from BC and across Canada, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, as well as teacher unions— especially those in Ontario, parents, community groups, and concerned citizens for supporting and standing in solidarity with teachers. “BC’s teachers are proud of the stand we took for fairness and improved learning conditions and we were heartened every step of the way by the steady waves of public support,” said Iker.

Statement from B.C. New Democrats on tentative education deal

New Democrat Leader John Horgan and spokesperson for education Rob Fleming released the following statement on the tentative deal reached in the education dispute: “News that a tentative agreement has been reached is great news for students, parents, teachers and everyone who stood with them during this education dispute. I’m pleased that our province’s kids will finally be back in classrooms where they belong after the longest province-wide shutdown of schools in B.C. history. “Throughout this dispute families and teachers were united in asking for the

necessary resources for classrooms that will improve public education. They stood up to a government who seemed more interested in provoking teachers than making schools better for kids.”

PM Harper at the Opening of the Ismaili The Anniversary Of 9/11 And To Mark Centre and the Aga Khan Museum Canada’s National Day Of Service: PM

Toronto, Ontario12 September 2014 Introduction Prime Minister Stephen Harper today joined His Highness the Aga Khan in the official opening of the Ismaili Centre and the Aga Khan Museum, situated in the Don Mills area of Toronto, Ontario. He was joined by Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. While at the Ismaili Centre, the Prime Minister toured the complex which incorporates spaces for social and cultural gatherings, intellectual engagement and reflection, as well as spiritual contemplation. He then visited

the Aga Khan Museum, which also held its inaugural ceremony on the same day. The Museum’s collection, which includes art and artifacts from the permanent collection of His Highness the Aga Khan and members of his family, is dedicated to presenting an overview of the artistic, intellectual and scientific contributions that Muslim civilizations have made to world heritage. Across Canada, Canadian Ismailis joined together at mosques and gathering places to watch a live stream of the events with their communities. www.pm.gc.ca/eng/news

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the anniversary of 9/11 and to mark Canada’s National Day of Service: “On September 11th, 2001, a group of terrorists targeting New York and the heart of the U.S. Government silenced the futures of nearly 3,000 innocent citizens from the United States and around the world – including 24 Canadians. “To the people who mourn their loss most profoundly, the friends and families of the victims, Laureen and I offer our respect, our condolences and hope that you find comfort in the fact that Canadians remember that awful day and grieve with you. “A key lesson of 9/11 is to remain vigilant against terror groups and regimes that seek to establish safe havens such as the one which existed in Afghanistan prior to 2001, where the 9/11 perpetrators were allowed to thrive. “While 9/11 will forever be remembered for the senseless nature of the attacks, it is important to recall that in the midst of terror and destruction, there was also enormous compassion, giving, bravery, and generosity to eclipse that darkness. “There were waves of first responders who self-

lessly risked their lives in the aftermath of the attacks. There was the service of volunteers – military and civilian alike – and the generosity of many more who lent a hand as Good Samaritans. Canadians in Gander, Newfoundland, and a number of other communities hosted several thousand diverted air passengers, treating these stranded people like family and friends, inviting them into their community and into their homes. “It is in honour and celebration of these acts of kindness that Canada designated September 11th as our National Day of Service in 2011, a day in which charitable deeds, fundraisers and community service can act as an antithesis to the inhumane acts committed 13 years ago. “Canadians continue to step up in times of catastrophe and hardship – whether the front lines happen to be in their community, in this country, or somewhere else in the world – to contribute their time, energy and personal resources to improve the lives of those less fortunate. It is a cherished value that is at the very heart of what it means to be Canadian, a value that shows no signs of abating regardless of the challenge.”

given to us so easily” Adil Awan wants to see Richmond’s planning better integrated to meet the demands of today and the future. “Workers demand their workplace to be transit-accessible, families want shopping and child-care near-by, and seniors want to be able to get around town without a car because cars are no longer considered a necessity.” said Awan. “Public transportation and accessibility is and will be the bedrock of each community. Our downtown for example, has a lot of transit infrastructure in place, but we are not leveraging it correctly. We need to plan downtown so it’s a self-sufficient eco-system of businesses, residents, and amenities. This will help businesses remain competitive with other cities and retain a skilled workforce. Accessible and diverse residential options will ensure a thriving and attractive community for all.”

Running with Awan on the Renew Richmond Team for councilor is Three-term Richmond School Trustee Grace Tsang who sees the biggest challenge in Richmond is our City’s inability to cooperate communicate. “City departments seem to operate in silos; sometimes they are not aware of what other departments are doing, and the lack of situational-awareness amongst each other is a culture that must be changed and Peter Mitchell, a well-known community organizer and professional property manager, who wants to see the City planning ahead instead of playing catch-up. School Trustee Candidate Alice Wong mother of two teenagers and vice-chair of the Richmond District Parents Association have spent over a decade working in the public education system. She wants to become a Richmond school trustee and continue her work in delivering quality public education.

Adil Awan Seeking Richmond City Councillorship

Since emigrating from Uganda, Adil and his family have called Richmond home since 1974 and is an air transport pilot based at YVR. In aviation, communication is absolutely critical to a pilot’s work; He wants to bring the same kind of mentality to City Hall where greater dialogue, two-way communication is absolutely necessary. Adil is at the forefront of our local economy as he transports various goods to and from YVR, while his family also owns and operates a local business, employing 9 full time employees. Adil’s hands-on, roll-up the sleeves attitude is most wonderfully demonstrated by his restored 1919 Ford Model T. Adil believes in hard work, dedication, and perseverance - the kind of values he will bring to City Hall, and the kind of values his father, Mahmood Awan, has impressed upon him over the years.

When asked why Adil had entered politics, he said that it all started at the grassroots, with conversations with friends and neighbours that made him aware of a shared sense of exclusion from his Muslim and immigrant community members. “Lots of immigrant communities do not appreciate the role of municipal politics in their daily lives” Awan said. “We tend to focus ourselves more with Federal, provincial and international politics, and neglect the local politics that impact our lives so immensely.” He cites examples of services that affect our daily lives that municipal politics dictates: our roads, public transit, parks, garbage collection, and schools. If municipal government is not effective, we end up with all sorts of local issues that ultimately lead to the deterioration of our society. Due to a multi-cultural divide within Richmond, Adil’s vision is to improve and bridge the gap between various ethnic groups and government. To the Muslim and immigrant communities, Awan’s message is strong - exercise your right to vote at every opportunity and remember that so many people around the world are struggling for very basic human rights. “They are living daily struggles, fighting for the right to vote and we get it on a silver platter. It’s our duty to exercise this right that is

Fijians finally have their say

By: Ropate Valemei UNDER glaring sunlight, thousands of Fijians lined to cast their votes at the different polling stations nationwide yesterday. It was a momentous day as Fijians participated in electing a democratic government after an absence of eight years. While some had easy access to their different polling venues, others walked miles and travelled on horseback just to make their votes count. Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said thousands of registered voters cast their votes in about 1000 polling stations around the country.

“Overall, there were high turnouts at the polling stations, he said at the media press briefing at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva last night. Party leaders also cast their votes at their different polling stations yesterday. Mr Saneem thanked all Fijians who cast their votes for the new dawn of Fiji. “I want to thank all the voters, all Fijians who turned up in numbers to brave the sun and come and vote, he said. Is Breakfast Really Your Most Important Meal?

By Rita Rubin Your mother might’ve told you breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Some recent reports, though, might make you think Mom’s take on breakfast is about as credible as other old wives’ tales. The reports that challenge the importance of breakfast say most studies linking it to a smaller waistline and improved health have been observational. Observational studies can’t prove cause and effect, though. Skeptics wonder whether some other quality common in breakfasteaters -- or breakfast-skippers, for that matter -- might have a greater impact on their health and weight than the meal itself. Researchers also say how the studies are done may explain the conflicting results. Several scientists who’ve studied the relationship between eating breakfast and health -- all of whom said they eat breakfast daily -- helped us sort it out. Q. If I want to lose weight, why not skip breakfast? After all, two meals have fewer calories than three. A. The desire to lose weight is one of the most frequently cited reasons for skipping breakfast. But many observational studies have found that people who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight. The theory is that they more than make up for the missed calories in the morning by eating more at lunch or snacking all day. But a study published in June challenged these beliefs. The study was a randomized controlled trial, considered the gold standard of medical research. In this type of study, volunteers don’t get to decide whether they eat breakfast, but are instead randomly assigned to either eat it or not. The study showed that when people skip breakfast, “overall, there’s still a similar intake or a lesser intake (of calories) over the

whole day,” says researcher Krista Casazza, PhD, RD. Another small randomized trial published by Cornell University researchers in Physiology & Behavior in 2013 found that college students ate about 145 calories more at lunch when they ate nothing in the morning than they did on a day when they ate breakfast. Considering that their breakfasts averaged about 625 calories, skipping it still resulted in a savings of about 450 calories by day’s end, according to the study. Whether that calorie deficit lasts for more than a few days and leads to weight loss remains to be seen, says Harvard School of Public Health researcher Rania Mekary, PhD. “Yourr metabolic rate might end up decreasing,” she says. “If you starve yourself, you might lose weight, but is that something good long-term?”Researchers point out that randomized trials have shortcomings, as well. They are often small and last only a few days. The bottom line is that while research hasn’t shown eating breakfast can lead to weight loss, neither does it show that eating breakfast makes you pack on the pounds, says Heather Leidy, PhD. She’s an assistant professor in the department of nutrition and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Q. What if you don’t eat anything until after you’ve been up for a couple of hours or more? Does that count as breakfast?

A. Does eating later in the morning count as breakfast or a snack, especially if it’s something small and not a calorie-laden meal? In many studies, researchers typically ask only whether participants ate breakfast, not what they ate or when they ate it. “There’s no real standard definition of breakfast,” says Megan McCrory, PhD. She’s an associate professor of nutrition at the Georgia State University Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions. Some people might call that container of yogurt scarfed down at their office a morning snack, while others might call it breakfast, Mcb Crory says, muddying the research findings. More study is needed, she said in an article published in July in Physiology & Behavior. Mekary says she wondered whether people who said they skipped breakfast actually ate the same amount of that meal but called it snacking. She and her colleagues had asked participants in the Nurses Health Study whether they snacked before lunch as well as whether they ate breakfast. In one analysis of their data, Mekary lumped together all of the before-lunch snackers who said they didn’t eat breakfast and compared them to the women who said they did. Both groups had a similarly lower risk of type 2 diabetes compared to women who said they ate nothing before lunch, in part because the morning eaters

tended to weigh less. In other words, whether you call it breakfast or a snack and eat it first thing or later in the morning, the potential benefits appear to be similar, Mekary says. Q. What is the breakfast of champions? A. Whether grabbing a doughnut is better than no breakfast at all remains to be seen, Leidy says. “Some of our studies suggest that it is better to eat something for breakfast as opposed to skipping,” she says. “On the other hand, we also show that eating a high sugar/high carbohydrate breakfast is detrimental in terms of appetite control and snacking.” A breakfast high in protein -- such as Greek yogurt with blueberries, granola, and nuts, or a breakfast burrito with eggs, lean meat or soy, and vegetables -- is a better choice, Leidy says. Q. Can eating breakfast make me smarter? A. It’s probably too late for you, but it might work for your kids. An observational study of Chinese kindergartners published in 2013 found that those who regularly ate breakfast had higher IQ scores than their peers who didn’t. The difference remained even after accounting for other factors that can influence IQ, such as parents’ education and occupations. A. Casazza, although skeptical of the benefits of breakfast for adults, says “a significant amount of data” support the meal’s importance for the brain in children and teens. There may be other benefits as well. A study of more than 4,000 children in the U.K., published Sept. 2 in PLoS Medicine, suggests that children who eat a daily breakfast may have a lower risk of getting type 2 diabetes. Mekary, who has a 3½-year-old daughter, says, “I would never send her to preschool without breakfast.” Source: WebMD Health News

Pakistani Muslim Women express their concerns with MP. Sims

Processing times for sponsorship of spouses, common-law or conjugal partners and dependent children applications

In a testament to the political awakening of the Pakistani Muslim women in Canada, there was a gathering of Pakistani Muslim women last Saturday in Urban Grill restaurant in Surrey. Kudos to Mrs. Shama Bajwa who along with Mrs.Shazia Noshad and Mrs. Nuzhat Khan organized this meeting with Jinny Sims, MP of Surrey Newton and North Delta. The main purpose of this meeting was to awaken the political consciousness amongst Muslim women immigrants so that discriminatory immigration policies and practices can be challenged. The women who participated in this candid conversation with the MP Jinny Sims explicitly expressed their concerns on the marginalization and intentional neglect of the Muslim interests. They expressed anguish and outrage at the havoc that was being caused in their families by the lengthy delays in the spousal immigration cases from Pakistan and other Muslim countries. There have been numerous breakups and divorces amongst the

newly weds because of the long separations on account of three years it takes to process spousal sponsorship applications. They were all unanimous in their demand that the processing time from Pakistan be brought on par with other countries to a maximum of One Year. Indicating a level of political acumen along with a desire to contribute, these Muslim women are coming out of their seclusion and acquaint themselves with problems and events of the modern world and marshal their energies to protect the Muslim rights and interests. Jinny Sims commended the gathered women and encouraged them to actively participate in the political process as it is one of the most direct ways to leave an imprint on the political developments and demand a greater role in society. To address the most burning issues of our times, Jinny Sims said that “ We must encourage the trend of Muslim women participation in social and political activities even

if it is in the form of indirect political participation of progressive Muslim womanhood. It is heartening to note that the Muslim women are becoming more aware and shedding their inhibitions to take charge of their social and civic responsibilities in the Canadian society. The role of Muslim women will be crucial one in this struggle and will leave phenomenal imprints on the political landscape of Canada.

Practicing patience while facing problems

If we look at the obstacles in life we can put them under a variety of headings: Personal problems, family issues, financial dilemmas, work pressures and spiritual confusion. And there are many issues under these headings. We have so many problems, so many obstacles that they are like illnesses. If we try to deal with them one by one we will never get through them. We need to identify them, put them in some general categories and tackle them as a group as opposed to trying to tackle each individual obstacle and problem. To do this we have to first of all remove obstacles that are beyond our control. We have to be able to distinguish which obstacles are within our control and which ones are beyond our control. While we perceive the ones that are beyond our control as obstacles the reality is that they are not. They are the things that Allah has destined for us in our lives, they are not really obstacles, but we have misinterpreted them as being obstacles. For example, in this time one might find oneself born black in a world that favors white people over black people; or born poor in a world that favors the rich over the poor, or born short, or crippled, or any other physical condition which is considered a handicap. These are all things that were and are beyond our control. We did not choose which family to be born in to; we did not choose which body for our spirit to be blown into, this is not our choice. So whatever we find of these kinds of obstacles then we just have to be patient with them and realize that, in

fact, they are not really obstacles. Allah told us: “…and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” (Qur’an, 2: 216) So the obstacles that are beyond our control, we may dislike them and we may want to change them, and some actually people spend a lot of money trying to change them. Michael Jackson is a classic example. He was born black in a world that favors white people, so he spent a lot of money trying to change himself but he only ended up making a mess of himself. Inner peace can only be achieved if the obstacles that are beyond our control are accepted by us patiently as part of Allah’s destiny. Know that whatever happens which we had or have no control over, then Allah has put in it some good, whether or not we are able to grasp what is good in it; the good is still there. So we accept it! There was an article in a newspaper, which had a photograph of a smiling Egyptian man. He had a smile on his face from ear to ear with his hands stretched out and both thumbs sticking up; his father was kissing him on one cheek and his sister on the other cheek. Underneath the photograph it had a caption. He was supposed to have been on a Gulf Air flight the day before, Cairo to Bahrain. He had dashed down to the airport to catch the flight and when he got there he had one stamp missing on his Passport (In Cairo you have to have many stamps on your documents. You get this person to stamp this and sign that and that person

to stamp that and sign this) But there he was at the airport with one stamp missing. As he was a teacher in Bahrain and this flight was the last one back to Bahrain which would enable him to report back on time, missing it meant that he would have lost his job. So he nagged them to let him on the flight. He became frantic, started crying and screaming and going berserk, but he could not get on the plane. It took off without him. He went (to his home in Cairo) distraught, thinking that he was finished and that his career was over. His family comforted him and told him not to worry about it. The next day, he heard the news that the plane he was meant to be on crashed and everybody on board died. And then there he was, ecstatic that he did not make the flight. But the day before it was the end of his life, a tragedy that he did not get on the flight. These are signs, and such signs can be found in the story of Musa and Khidr (which we should read every Jumu’ah, i.e. Surah AlKahf). When Khidr made a hole in the boat of the people who were kind enough to take him and Musa across the river, Musa asked why he (Khidr) did that. When the owners of the boat saw the hole

in the boat they wondered who did it and thought that it was a nasty thing to have done. A short while later the king came down to the river and forcefully took away all the boats except the one with a hole in it. So the owners of the boat praised Allah due to the fact that there was a hole in their boat. (This incident refers to a king who was an oppressor and was known for seizing every good boat by force, but the people who owned the boat were poor people and it was their only means of benefit so Khidr wanted the boat to appear to be faulty so that the king did not seize it in order for the poor people to carry on benefiting from it.) What is your purpose in life? By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor My life dreams are an indicator of what I think my purpose in life is. It may not be so obvious to some other people though. Remember, it is your dream! You may have a variety of dreams such as to help others, pursue towards a certain career, to bring up wonderful children who will become great individuals, to build a successful business, to find love and a soul mate to share your life and dreams with and many more.... Dreams are very personal and you may have more than one dream in life of course. It is a revealing exercise to think about your dreams. Many of us have never tried to take a step back to write a list of dreams. To value them can be a very enlightening experience itself! (Don’t be hesitant, it’s helpful to have a journal). Now, when you take a look at your list of life dreams, you can see how to learn and grow is a common manner. Working to make a dream come true means you are in process of learning and growing. There may be challenges of acquiring knowledge to plan and to act to accomplish those dreams. The outcome of growing through the experiences of accepting your path is inherent to making your dreams come true. This applies to any dream! No matter

what your d r e a m may be, you will have to learn and grow to reach your objectives. Otherwise, the dream wouldn’t really be a dream. If you had nothing to learn and nowhere to grow, wouldn’t your dream already be a reality? Wouldn’t it be absolutely boring to have nothing else to strive for? So no matter what your dreams are, your basic life purpose will be to learn and grow. It is an incredibly important concept to understand because it breaks down your big dream (and your possibly overwhelming list of dreams) into a very basic process. The purpose to learn and grow will come so naturally to you when you embrace it…. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

10 Things Only Your First Job Teaches You

by By Neha Borkar Your first job might not have been your dream job, but it must have definitely laid a strong foundation for your ongoing career. It made you struggle for peanuts; do something which you loathed. But you must be grateful to your first job because it showed you the real difference between ‘expectation’ and ‘reality’. We list ten points that you learnt as a fresher...

1 It’s a BIG, BAD World Outside

Just out of college, a fresher that you were, you believed in everything nice until you witnessed your boss’s extreme rage, bitchy colleagues and condescending clients. It was then, your first job told you to remove your rose-tinted glasses, and take a look at the cutthroat competitive world with a practical approach.

2 People Don’t Like a Rude Fresher Remember how your colleagues reacted when you said ‘no’ to making photocopies? That. People boss around freshers. They expect them to do menial work without the slightest hesitation. And, if you hesitate, they consider you ‘rude’. However, if you

listen to them you make them smile. Therefore, don’t hesitate to be the ‘doughnut’ boy during your first job.

pizza party for your loved ones.

3 Any Kind of Stress is Eustress

And, that’s normal. You will never be satisfied with your first job. After a certain point, monotony and boredom will creep in and will compel you to think intense questions like – ‘What am I doing with my life?’ ‘Is this my true purpose?’ And, that’s where life truly begins.

You gave your best and paid fine attention to every small task. It was your way to prove yourself. You took the pressure and changed it to eustress which means good stress that demonstrated your awesome abilities.

4 It Either Makes You Hardwork- 7 Networking is Necessary You can’t remain aloof from your coling or a Slacker Your first job fetches you names. You are either an ‘enthu cutlet’, who is enthusiastic about everything or an annoying ‘know-itall’ who doesn’t listen to his colleagues. It also makes you realise what sort of an employee are you. Whether you are a smart working aleck or a donkey worker. Either way, you realise your working style.

5 It Tells You to Believe in the Power of Small Joys Even if it got you peanuts, your first cheque was like an achievement which you will never forget. It taught you to be happy with a small amount, and let you afford a small

True Friendship!

By: Rahma Khan Jana came walking home from school, sobbing. Her mother noticed instantly. “What happened, Jana? Why are you crying?”. Jana answered, “Safa made fun of my clothes at school today! She said they were from the 1930s!”. Mother sighed. This wasn’t the first time Safa bullied her. She took Jana to her room. “Tell me about Safa. Why does she pick on you, Jana? I certainly hope you didn’t do anything to start it” said the mother. “I didn’t even talk to her before her bullying!”answered Jana. “Jana, there’s a saying your grandfather told me when I used to get bullied: Nobody can hurt you without your consent” said Mother. “It means that nobody can hurt you unless you choose to be hurt. You have to believe your clothes are not from the 1930s”. Jana nodded. “They didn’t even wear these kinds of dresses that time!” she answered, cheering up. “That’s what you should tell Safa. And the next time she bullies you, think of the saying, and just ignore Safa. Eventually,

she’ll stop bullying you” suggested Mother. 2 weeks later, Jana came home with a huge smile on her face. “Jana, why are you happy?” asked Mama, happy to see Jana that way. “I have been so nice to Safa that she appologized for her bullying! But, you know, Safa used to get terribly bullied back in her old school, so she moved here and started bullying me to get over it”answered Jana. “Oh” replied Mother. “I felt bad for her, and I decided to become her best friend” said Jana. “I’m really proud of you, Jana! You had sympathy on Safa and turned her into a good person! That is what Allah (SWT) loves. You get hundreds of good deeds for that” explained Mother. “Alhamdulillah” said Jana. Crow and Little Bird

B Fatima Nadeem Grade 7th By O One day, Little Bird invited C Crow for dinner. Little Bird h spent the day preparing the had m meal, and when it was ready she w waited for her guest to arrive. S Some time passed, but Crow did n arrive. So Little Bird called not out, ‘Where are you Crow, dinner is getting cold?’ ‘I am coming, I am coming,’ replied Crow. ‘I am just having a bath, and then I will put on my red shoes and I will come along and we will eat dinner together.’ So Little Bird waited some more, but still Crow did not arrive. Eventually, Little Bird called out again, ‘Crow, Crow, where are you? The dinner is getting cold and I am getting very hungry. Are you going to join me in my kitchen and eat dinner with me?’ Crow replied, ‘Yes, yes, I am coming. I am just finishing my bath, and then I will put on my red shoes and I will come to your kitchen and we will eat dinner together.’ So Little Bird waited some more, until she thought to herself, ‘I have had enough of waiting. I am hungry and want my dinner.’ Little Bird began eating the meal alone. And it was so tasty that she ate it all up until the pot was empty... ‘Oh no!’ thought Little Bird. ‘There is none left for Crow because I have eaten it all.’ Greedy Little Bird became very nervous when she realised that she had eaten all of the dinner and had left none for her guest. ‘What if Crow comes and finds out that there is no dinner to eat,’ she thought to herself. ‘He might eat me instead!’ So Little Bird decided to turn the pot upside down and go and find herself a place to hide in the kitchen. Suddenly, Crow came into the kitchen. ‘Little Bird, Little Bird,’ called out Crow, ‘I have come for my dinner. Where are you?’But Little Bird remained in her hiding

place, all the time thinking to herself, ‘Oh no, what am I going to do now that I have eaten all of the food?’Crow looked all about the kitchen but could not find Little Bird. He called out once more, ‘Little Bird, Little Bird, I am here. Where is the dinner that you promised me?’But Crow soon realised that the pot was empty and that there was no dinner because Little Bird had eaten it all. Crow was very angry and picked up a hot poker from the fire beneath the stove and shouted out, ‘Little Bird, Little Bird, come out wherever you are or I shall hit you on the bottom with this hot poker!’ Little Bird let out a tiny yelp of fear and Crow found her hiding beneath the kitchen table. Little Bird wanted to escape, but she was unable to fly away because her belly was so full of the dinner she had promised to share with Crow. Crow did not hit Little Bird on her bottom with the hot poker, but he did say to her in a very stern voice: ‘Little Bird, Little Bird, why did you invite me to dinner when you have eaten it all? Why did you leave none for me? Do you not know that it is very bad to say things that you do not mean?’ Little Bird felt very guilty indeed, and from that day on she never ate any of the dinner before her guests had all arrived. And she never, ever said anything that she did not mean with all of her heart.

Organizing Tips For The Home: Bathroom Ladder display:

By Mona Ismaeil The bathroom is often difficult to organize because there is little luxury of space and storage. This is one room that needs some real creativity. You have to think big and small at the same time! With a bit of tips and tricks, you can manage a better organized and neater bathroom space as well.

Here’s how:

If you have enough floor space, you could re-purpose an old ladder to display your towels. This is a neat idea that has a nice decorative flair to it. Hooks: Most of us use regular towel hooks and there is nothing wrong with that. They do the job just fine. If you want to spice

together. Try some of these categories: Allergy Cold/Flu Just for him Just for her Kids

Toilet Paper

Shelving: A small expandable shelf under your sink can help make the most of the space. These can be ordered online for a fairly reasonable price. Bins: If you like bins like I do, then this is the perfect space for them. Use different sizes to organize different items. Place like items together for easy inventory. Bins with lids are great for smaller items like tooth pastes and soaps.

Towels

The Shower There are many ways to organize your shower but it depends on the set up of your shower. Do you have a ledge? What kind of tiles are there? Is there a tub? Shower Caddy: This is the most common organizing tool; it is simple, easy and very inexpensive. You can either get ones that hang around your shower head, or one that suctions to the walls. Both will help keep products off of the tub and prevent rings and stains. Also, this is a great way to keep these items out of the reach of young children.

things up you could change the hooks to something more fun and unique. Try “his” and “hers” hooks. Maybe find neat hooks that go with your theme. Try using dresser knobs in different colors to add a little fun to your bathroom.

Medicine Cabinet

There are many ways to store your towels. It depends on your space. There are many ways which can combinedstorage with a creative decorative touch. Baskets: I love this idea! If you have a largUnder the Sink er wall space use a few baskets in different This space can be considered the dungeon sizes to display and store extra towels. This of the bathroom. All bad bath products are will also take a little pressure off of your sent there. This does not have to be the case linen closet. for your space!

This can become a major mess but it doesn’t have to be. No matter how you choose to organize your space, the most important thing to do is LABEL everything. Keep the medicine you would likely use at the same time

Nothing is worse than getting comfy and realizing you don’t have any toilet paper because your husband used it and left you a single square! It is vital to keep some extras in your bathroom for easy access but at the same time you want to keep them in an organized fashion. Toilet paper holder: This simple item stands alone next to your toilet and holds a few extra rolls. Simple and functional! Basket: You may want to leave a large basket in your bathroom with many rolls or perhaps, like I do, a little basket that sits above the toilet with 2 extra rolls. Under the sink: This is also a common place to store toilet paper. It works just fine as well. It’s a little harder to access easily but still quite functional. Organizing your bathroom can be fun and easy. Remember to put your own touches into it and be sure to use your space to its full potential!

Kashmir region reels from Water torrent reaches flooding Guddu barrage after devastating Punjab

The main city in Indian-administered Kashmir has “drowned completely” under floodwaters, according to a senior official, with the deadly inundation now affecting about two million people in neighbouring Pakistan and threatening its all-important cotton industry. The floods began in Kashmir after heavy monsoon rains and are now progressing downstream through Pakistan, inundating thousands of villages and large areas of important farmland in the country’s breadbasket. This year’s floods in Kashmir are the deadliest in the region in 50 years and up to 100,000 people are still cut off in the mountainous terrain. The waters are beginning to recede, revealing the extent of the devastation in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir. “Srinagar has drowned completely, it’s unrecognisable. Almost everything is in ruins, it is just unimaginable,” Mehraj-Ud-Din Shah, State Disaster Response Force chief of Kashmir region, told AFP by phone. He said work was “in full swing” to rescue people. “But even now, about 100,000 people are believed to be stranded in different places,” he said. Srinagar has also been hit by looting, leading some householders to risk their lives and stay with their homes to protect their property. Jamal Ahmed Dar, who lives close to Srinagar’s Dal Lake, said that his neighbours had already caught two looters red-handed. “We came across and then caught up with two young men on a boat who we didn’t recognise,” he said. “When we searched them, we found they had cash and other belongings that they couldn’t account for. We gave them a bit of a slap, took the stuff back off them and then handed it over to the rescue coordinators.” An AFP correspondent witnessed two men on a raft made out of a plastic water tank trying to

break into a house in the upmarket Jawara Nagar neighbourhood before they were chased away by locals who pursued them on a flimsy wooden boat. Across the border in Pakistan, more than 450 people have been killed and the country’s Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said just short of two million people have been affected by the floodwaters. The figure includes both those stranded at home and those who fled after the floods hit. More than 140,000 people have been evacuated from towns and villages around Punjab, Pakistan’s richest and most populous province. Authorities have made plans to make holes in strategic dykes to divert the floodwaters away from Multan, a city of two million inhabitants and the nerve centre of Pakistan’s cotton and textiles industry, a vital export earner. Pakistan’s Ministry of Water and Power has issued fresh flood warnings for the river Indus at Guddu and Sukkur, downriver from Multan in Sindh province. The Sukkur area saw some of the worst of the devastating floods of 2010, the worst in Pakistan’s history, when the waters swamped 160,000sq km of land - an area bigger than England - and cost the country nearly $10bn. About 1,800 people were killed and 20 million affected. Analysts have said this year’s floods so far do not appear to be on the same scale, but thousands of people are still facing life in relief camps until the waters recede. The Pakistani army, which often plays a leading role in disaster relief, said seven of its helicopters were engaged in rescue work around Multan and Jhang, upriver. Troops have dropped more than 50 tonnes of rations around Punjab, the Pakistan military said in a statement, and mobile medical teams are treating those affected by the floods.

Dozens of settlements have been submerged, while crops and livestock got swept away in flood as the water torrent from River Chenab made its way through to Guddu barrage in Sindh on Wednesday. The water level decreased in Punjnad Headworks whereas it rose above 300,000 cusec at Guddu barrage. The nearby crops stretched over a huge area therefore got washed away. The amount of water reaching at Sukkur barrage and Gothki barrage has risen up to 178,000 cusec and 50,843 cusec, respectively. The water torrent has sunk many of the villages and disrupted land communication completely that has left many people stranded. Khangarh and Shujaabad area of Alipur have also drowned in flood water. Sultan city on the other hand got hit by flood due to river erosion. Dozens of settlements in Thatta Sial, Moradabad and Bhattapur including Muzaffargarh have been submerged in flood water whereas the rupture of Shoria Canal dyke at Shekhani in

Dera Ghazi Khan caused the flood water to engulf a vast area. Meanwhile, the Army troops Wednesday rescued 2,700 stranded people in flood affected area of Alipur near Muzaffargarh. Thirty boats and two helicopters were employed for evacuation. A medical camp has been established there and 700 kilogram of ration was also distributed. In Punjab, 21 ton ration and food was carried by means of 13 flights of the helicopter of provincial chief minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif for the flood affectes. For this purpose, the helicopter flew continuously for seven hours and carried the food items for the flood affectes in the areas including Head Muhammad Wala, Sher Shah and Shujaabad. To assist flood affected people, donation camps have also been established by Pakistan Army at Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan and Karachi. At Rawalpindi relief donation points have been established at following locations.

Legendary World Squash Champion Hashim Khan dies as at age 100

By:Farooq Rai, (Richmond) The greatest squash player of all time, Hashim Khan, died in Colorado, US on Monday, August 18th, 2014. Khan was the patriarch of Pakistan’s squash supremacy, winning seven British Open titles, the unofficial “World Championship,” the first of which

was in 1951, when he was 37 years old. His last at age 44, was considered a truly unbelievable feat in a grueling sport like squash. The “Khan Dynasty” accounted for winning an unprecedented 23 British Open titles. I first met Hashim Khan in 1965 at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club, where Khan played exhibition matches against top Canadian squash players. I was fortunate enough to be a part of this historic sports event. Denny Boyd, Vancouver Sun sports columnist wrote after the matches: “For the past two days, a stream of splendidly built young athletes has been lurching off squash courts all over town, their bodies drenched with perspiration, their knees jellies after being locked in a court with a 55-year old father of 10.” Hashim Khan settled in the US in the early 1960s. He continued to play squash well into his 90s. I remember asking Khan about his

age and incredible resiliency. Khan shrugged and with a twinkle in his eyes replied; “Ah, my age? My age remains forgotten… it is all a state of mind... I am having so much fun and I am blessed…” I was an accomplished university tennis and squash player, invited Hashim Khan for dinner next day. I was thrilled to avail this opportunity to meet his sports mentor and has many fond memories of Khan’s historic visit to Vancouver. I also spoke Pushto, the native language of the Khans. and admired Hashim Khan along with his millions of fans around the world as a true sports champion. More than winning, Hashim Khan was known for his genuine sportsmanship and humility. Khan always allowed his opponent to leave the court first in a dignified manner. Khan was all about respect and exhibited graciousness apart from unparalleled athleticism,

the wicket, 41 to 42 degrees for offspin bowled around the wicket, 40 degrees for the doosra, 38 degrees for quicker ones around the wicket and 42 degrees for quicker balls over the wicket. Following news of the report leaking, PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan admitted that the tests found Ajmal’s elbow extension to be well over the legal limit. “Some of the deliveries had very high elbow extension, over 40 degrees,” Khan told AFP. “The mean of Ajmal’s deliveries was 37 degrees which again is high and now we have a challenge to do the remedial work.” Ajmal is set to undergo remedial work on his action from September 15. He can apply for reassessment of his action once he has undergone remedial work, and if it is cleared then, his suspension will be lifted. This was the second instance of Ajmal being reported for a suspect action. In April 2009, he had been reported for his doosra,

and was cleared the following month. The ICC rules allow the PCB 14 days from the receipt of the report on Ajmal’s action to file an appeal, though the Pakistan board has seemingly been veering away from taking this course of action. Ajmal, though, had said after being banned that such an appeal could work in his favour since he had a medical condition that contributed to his problem. “They are yet to consider my medical reports and once they do it, I am sure there shouldn’t be any problem,” Ajmal had said. “If one has a medical problem then what can he do? So I am 100% positive and hoping for the best.” It is understood that the PCB had maintained Ajmal had a medical condition following an accident which affected the movement of his elbow when he was previously reported, and that had been accepted by the ICC when his action was cleared then. The ICC’s report this time around,

Hashim Khan was an indisputable legendary sports figure given his age and remarkable accomplishments. Tributes to this great Pakistani sports legend have poured in from all over the global sports community. Here, in Canada, the Pakistani community equally saddened to hear of this great legends passing.

Ajmal’s flex more than twice legal limit - ICC report

SaeedAjmal’s average elbow extension is more than twice the permissible limit of 15 degrees, according to an ICC report available with ESPNcricinfo following biomechanical testing of his bowling action. Ajmal, who was banned on September 9 after tests at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, was found to flex his elbow up to an average of 42 degrees while bowling, the report said. Ajmal was assessed bowling offspin from over and around the wicket, the doosra and quicker balls, and none of the deliveries were close to the permissible limit, the report said. As per ICC rules, a bowler can have maximum elbow extension or flex - the amount he bends and straightens his elbow while delivering the ball - of 15 degrees; anything more, and the action is deemed to be illegal. As per the report, during the tests Ajmal’s average elbow extension stood at 37 to 39 degrees for offspin delivered over

under its injury history and anatomical abnormalities section, said he “reports a previous injury [of the elbow], a fracture in 2004”, but did not elaborate on how that would affect his action. Separately, the report did note that “the player was not generally hypermobile”, hypermobility being a condition in which the body’s joints easily move beyond the normal range. Source: Cricinfo
