Pakistan leader, in Assembly address, spotlights climate change, regional concerns

On 26 September, the Prime Minister of Pakistan spotlighted the impact of extreme weather events on his country and also urged the international community to resolve the ongoing dispute over Kashmir, which is one of the longest-running issues on the United Nations agenda. Extreme weather is disrupting world economies, particularly in developing countries, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, said, adding that recent monsoon floods in his country had killed hundreds of people, displaced millions, and destroyed and damaged homes, livelihoods, infrastructure, cattle and crops. The Government was mobilizing all its

resources and ingenuity to provide relief and ensure recovery. He called on the international community to intensify its efforts to move from awareness to commitments on actions addressing climate change. On regional concerns, he said that more than six decades ago, the United Nations passed resolutions to hold a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are still waiting for the fulfillment of that promise,” he said noting that despite attempts under UN auspices and bilaterally, many generations of Kashmiris have lived under occupation, with women particularly undergoing immense suffering and humiliation. “We cannot draw a veil on the issue of Kashmir, until it is addressed in accordance with the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mr. Sharif said. During his address in the UN body, the Prime Minister also raised the issues of Afghanistan to whom he reiterated the country’s solidarity, and called for the lifting of the blockade on Gaza. As a responsible nuclear weapon State, he said, Pakistan would continue to support the objectives of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and pursue a policy of nuclear restraint and credible minimum deterrence. To promote stability, it was prepared to explore new confidencebuilding measures, he added. He also said that, in regard to the reform of the Security Council, there should be no new permanent seats on it; instead, the body should become more representative, equitable, accountable and transparent. PPP suggests Nawaz to resign; announce midterm elections

Faisal Qureshi

PPP leader and opposition head in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Tuesday favoured a call for mid-term elections and suggested that the prime minister can choose to resign, reported by the news. “We are in favour of mid-term election but not by force,” Shah stated while talking to media outside the Parliament House. He said that he does not support the demand of prime minister’s resignation. “PM should himself decide while keeping in view the prevailing political situation,” he added. Shah said that the current political stalemate can only be resolved through dialogue. The opposition leader has served a legal notice on Pakistan

Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for levelling allegations of corruption on him. Shah sought an apology from the PTI chief for his allegations, which he said were intended to defame him, and demanded Rs 10 billion in damages if the former chooses not to tender an apology. Imran Khan had hurled the allegations at Khursheed Shah on September 19 when he stated that the opposition leader was supporting the government because two corruption cases were pending against him in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Shah had on September 20 asked Imran to prove the corruption allegations within three days or face a court of law. After getting no response from the PTI chief, Khursheed Shah had warned that his lawyers had prepared a legal notice to serve on Imran Khan. On Tuesday, he stated that Imran Khan had wrongly claimed that corruption cases were pending against him in NAB. The opposition leader also relentlessly criticised the incumbent government “for its mishandling of the current political turmoil”. “Measures should have been taken with regard to PTI’s demands of opening four constituencies due to alleged rigging,” he said. Shah said that political leaders should refrain from criticising and damaging the reputation of the country’s institutions. He expressed the hope that protesters at the two sit-ins in Islamabad would return to their homes safely. Shah suggested to the Nawaz-led government that it should deal with the ‘Go Nawaz Go’ slogan in public gatherings. About mid-term election in the country, Shah said that though he does not favour it, however, the political

situation is apparently pushing the country to this arrangement. He said that dialogue is the only solution to the current political impasse and deplored that the government had wasted time to tackle the situation effectively. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had said on Monday that the government was serving the masses relentlessly “despite disturbance caused by sit-ins”. Talking to reporters before heading to Heathrow airport for return to the country, the prime minister said he did not want to talk about those people “who were engaged in negative politics”, a private channel reported. Nawaz, who made a two-night stopover in London on his way back home after attending the 69th UN General Assembly in New York, said parliament of the country played a significant role in strengthening democracy. He said his government too wanted to remove anomalies in the system, where they exist. To a question, PM Nawaz said he did not think that the judiciary was conspiring against the government. He said parliament has played an important role in the current political crisis and the government will continue to function without any detraction. He vowed to bring reforms in the system in his five-year term. He said the entire parliament and nation stands on one side while a handful of elements stand isolated on the other. Nawaz said the political leadership has demonstrated maturity in the prevailing situation. The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the plea for the formation of a larger bench over the case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification and adjourned the hearing of the case till October 2.

Stephen Harper promises Hong Kong protesters not to drag Canada into remain on streets ‘quagmire’ in Iraq

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his government will decide in the coming days whether to expand Canada’s military involvement in Iraq to stop radical jihadists from committing “genocide” – adding he doesn’t want to sink this country into a “quagmire.” Speaking in the House of Commons Tuesday, Harper reiterated the importance of fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and said Canadian military advisers already in Iraq have been helping Iraqi forces resist “a force bent on the genocide of the people who live there.” He also voiced support for the recent U.S.led bombing campaign against ISIL forces in Iraq and in Syria. The attacks have destroyed vehicles and infrastructure such as gas plants, power stations and grain silos. “These are necessary actions, they are noble actions,” Harper said. “And when we think something is necessary and noble, we don’t sit back and say only other people should do it. The Canadian way is you do your part.” Some civilians have reportedly also died in the attacks. But while the prime minister said the government will make a final decision on whether to expand Canada’s military mission “within the next few days,” he added that he doesn’t want to become embroiled in a long, drawn-out conflict with no end in sight. “We will obviously look carefully at steps that we believe would not leave us there in a quagmire for years,” he said. “That is something all governments are going to avoid.” Harper refused to be drawn out on what type of mission cabinet is contemplating, including whether Canadian warplanes could be flying over and attacking targets in Syria as well as Iraq. He also wouldn’t speculate on how long the fight against ISIL would take. U.S. President Barack Obama has sug-

gested the effort could take up to three years. Harper did say, however, that the objective is to “get us to the point where this organization does not have the capacity to launch” attacks in the Middle East or against the West. The prime minister’s comments came after senior military, intelligence and diplomatic officials briefed the cabinet about how Canada can step up its participation in the fight against ISIL. Defence chief Gen. Tom Lawson would not reveal what he told the ministers, including whether he recommended Canada participate in the U.S.-led bombing campaign. Canada currently has 69 military advisers working with Iraqi and Kurdish forces in northern Iraq. The government initially set a 30-day deadline on that mission, which expires on Oct. 5. But the U.S. has asked Canada to contribute more, and it’s been widely reported the request entails the deployment of fighter jets, refuelling aircraft and surveillance planes. There has been concern about Canada’s CF-18s, given they were supposed to start being retired in a few years. But the government, which still hasn’t decided on a replacement jet, has signed off on a plan to keep them flying until 2025. The Citizen reported Monday that defence officials knew in May 2013 that they would have to find ways to extend the life of the jet fighters, because of delays in deciding whether to buy the F-35 stealth fighter or hold an open competition to replace the CF-18s. Defence Minister Rob Nicholson’s office said work to extend the life of the jet fighters is expected to begin in 2016 and be completed by 2019. Spokeswoman Johanna Quinney did not respond to questions about how much the work will cost, but sources say the estimate is about $400 million. Conservative MPs and senators were to gather Wednesday for their weekly caucus meeting and there was speculation Harper would lay out a plan for Iraq at that time. Tuesday was the first time the prime minister, NDP leader Tom Mulcair and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau were in question period together since Harper revealed in New York that the U.S. had asked for more help from Canada in tackling ISIL. EU to keep Russia sanctions in place over Ukraine The EU is to keep sanctions against Russia in place, judging that Ukraine’s peace deal is not fully effective. EU ambassadors who met on Tuesday had noted some “encouraging developments” since the 5 September ceasefire was agreed, an EU spokeswoman said. But other parts of the peace deal “will need to be properly implemented”, said the spokeswoman, Maja Kocijancic. The sanctions target senior Russian officials, as well as Russia’s oil industry, defence firms and banks. Western governments and the Ukrainian authorities in Kiev accuse Russia of supplying the separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine with heavy weapons and soldiers. Russia denies the allegations. EU and US sanctions have been in place since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March. At least 3,200 people have died in fighting since April in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and thousands of civilians have fled

the conflict. A shaky ceasefire has held since 5 September, and the two sides have since agreed to set up a 30km (19-mile) buffer zone. But there have been frequent flare-ups of violence. At least seven Ukrainian soldiers died in a clash with pro-Russian rebels near Donetsk airport on Monday - the deadliest single incident for the military since the truce deal. A tank shell hit the vehicle carrying the troops, officials said. More heavy shelling was reported on Tuesday in the Donetsk airport area. Last week Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, told the UN General Assembly that Russian troops were still operating in eastern Ukraine. He urged the West not to lift sanctions until his country regained control of all its territory. Both the US and the EU have said sanctions could be lifted if the situation on the ground improves sufficiently. Source: BBC News

Tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters have turned parts of Hong Kong into a massive street party on Monday night, with the mood turning festive just a day after riot police had deployed tear gas. The huge crowds defied government calls to go home after Sunday’s chaotic scenes, bringing key districts of the Asian financial hub to a standstill, as they vowed to stay put until the Chinese government grants them free elections. Sunday’s violence saw riot police fire clouds of tear gas as they struggled to control the protesters, in one of the biggest challenges to Beijing’s rule of the semi-autonomous city. The anger gave way to a lighter atmosphere on Monday night as riot police retreated, leaving huge masses of protesters in control of at least four major thoroughfares around the city. Although there were few police on the scene, some protesters feared a repeat of Sunday’s clashes, donning goggles and masks to protect themselves against tear gas. The demonstrators are furious over last month’s announcement by Beijing that while it will allow the city’s next leader to be elected in 2017, it will insist on picking the candidates, with critics branding the move a “fake democracy”. Public anger over rampant inequality is also at its highest in years in a city once renowned for its stability. Cantonese pop music filled the air during the second day of what some are dubbing the “umbrella revolution”, as protesters have been using the canopies as shields against tear gas and the scorching sun alike. One British sympathiser won huge cheers as he set up a barbecue and began handing out hamburgers and sausages to the protesters. “I saw everybody was just standing around and just eating bread and bananas and I thought, ‘These guys have been here for 24 hours now, and everybody needs cooked food’,” Daniel Shepherd, a finance broker by day, told AFP news agency. “Firing tear gas at students that are unarmed, I think, seems a bit excessive,” added the 32-year-old. The crowds hoisted up a makeshift copy of the “goddess of democracy” statue that graced the 1989 protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, while lamp posts were adorned with yellow ribbons - which, like the umbrella, have become a symbol of the move-

ment. But many people in Hong Kong have expressed frustration at the huge disruption the protests have caused, with the crowds blocking key junctions in the busy Causeway Bay and Mongkok shopping districts as well as the biggest protest site in Admiralty. There was chaos on the transport network, shuttering many businesses, with schools in two central districts set to close for a second day on Tuesday. Some social workers and teachers also went on strike after the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU) and the Professional Teachers’ Union (PTU) called for members to take action, the South China Morning Post reported. Analysts said the protests put the Chinese government in an extremely difficult position. Communist authorities are worried that dealing with the protests too softly could encourage wider protests for greater freedoms on the mainland. But a heavy-handed response could spark an international outcry. “It has the potential to be such a major crisis,” said Christopher Hughes, a China expert at the London School of Economics. He warned that Hong Kong could see a repeat of China’s violent crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests. “If they did decide to send in the tanks, who could stop them?” he asked. “They did it in 1989 and got away with it and they’re a lot more powerful now. There would be some negative impact, some business confidence, but how long will that last?” The United States urged Hong Kong’s leaders to “exercise restraint”. Former colonial power Britain also expressed concern, calling for “constructive” talks to end the standoff. Beijing moved swiftly to wipe mentions of the protests from Chinese social media - blocking photo-sharing service Instagram altogether - and reiterated its hardline stance, opposing the demonstrators’ “illegal” actions. Al Jazeera’s Adrian Brown, reporting from Beijing, confirmed the outage saying “many photos from the protests were being posted on the app, and it seems that China wants to starve this story of oxygen”. He added that other blogs that mention the words “occupy” and “central” were also having problems. Source: Al-Jazeera

Front National wins seats in Ebola outbreak: ‘Thousands of orphans shunned’ French senate for first time

The far-right Front National (FN) scored a historic victory in elections to the French senate on Sunday, winning its first ever seats in the upper chamber as the ruling Socialists and their leftwing allies lost their majority to rightwing parties. The shock victory of Stéphane Ravier from Marseilles and David Rachline from Fréjus confirmed the party’s political breakthrough under Marine Le Pen, who has brushed the poisonous legacy of her father Jean-Marie Le Pen under the carpet in an attempt to “de-demonise” the FN. The two seats are both in the FN’s stronghold in southern France, and at 26 Rachline, the mayor of Fréjus, is the youngest French senator ever elected. The result marks a third humiliating electoral defeat for the Socialist party, which has been punished by disillusioned voters while support for the FN has surged. Le Pen’s party won control of a dozen municipalities in elections last March, including the 7th district in Marseilles where Ravier was elected mayor. It also came top in the European elections two months later, when it knocked the centre-right UMP into second place. One poll earlier this month said that Le Pen could theoretically beat the country’s president, François Hollande, in the second round of the next presidential election, scheduled for 2017. Referring to the presidency after his election to the senate, Ravier said: “There’s just one more door to open, the Elysée. In 2017 we’ll have Marine Le Pen to do it.” Sunday’s complex vote was for half of the 348 seats in the senate by an electoral college of 87,000 voters made up of city councillors and local officials. A first round of voting which concluded around midday provided a foretaste of the

final shock result, with the Socialists losing seven seats, including in Hollande’s own constituency of La Correze. “It’s Berezina,” one leading Socialist said, referring to Napoleon’s defeat while retreating from Russia. With Hollande’s popularity at an unprecedented low of 13% and the government hit by budget woes, record joblessness and zero growth, his party had expected to lose the senate majority it has held with the Communists and Greens since 2011. Le Pen hailed her party’s success as a “great victory, an absolutely historic victory” which she said would represent a “breath of fresh air in a rather sleepy chamber”. “With every day that passes, our ideas are making progress,” she told BFMTV, predicting further gains for the FN in the forthcoming territorial and regional elections. The result is also a much-needed shot in the arm for the UMP of the former president Nicolas Sarkozy, who is bidding to return to head the party. Sarkozy returned to the political arena last week, and is clearly positioning himself for another run at the presidency after Hollande defeated him in 2012. With the final senate results still awaited, the Socialist leader, Jean-Christophe Cambadélis, played down the scale of his party’s defeat, saying it had feared greater gains by the opposition right-wing parties. The Socialist leader of the senate, Didier Guillaume, predicted that the right would not have a stable majority, saying that the UMP would need to rely on centrist allies. The government spokesman Stéphane Le Foll stressed that whatever the outcome, the prime minister, Manuel Valls, would not be deflected from his reform plans. Source: Al-Jazeera

Obama and Modi call for ‘new agenda’ between US and India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama have called for a “new agenda” between their countries during Mr Modi’s US visit. The two leaders outlined their agenda for future US-Indian relations in an article, as Mr Modi visited the White House for a second day. “The true potential of our relationship has yet to be fully realised,” they wrote in the Washington Post. Ties between the two countries have been strained in recent months. Among the contentious issues are India’s refusal to sign a global trade deal, a row over alleged American surveillance on the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and a diplomatic spat involving an Indian envoy to the US. Mr Obama hosted a dinner for the Indian prime minister on Monday, despite Mr Modi not eating as part of a nine-day religious fast. On Tuesday, the US president praised Mr Modi’s time in office, including his focus on addressing “the needs of the poorest of the poor” and India’s regional role. Mr Modi said he had invited Mr Obama to India and pressed him for more openness and ease of access for Indian companies in the US. “We already have the foundation of a strong partnership,” Mr Modi said, according to the English translation of his remarks. “We now have to revive the momentum and ensure that we get the best out of it for our people and the world.” After their remarks at the White House, the two leaders visited the Martin Luther King Jr memorial. The US civil rights leader was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s civil disobedience tactics. A two-day White House visit for a foreign leader is rare, but the trip is Mr Modi’s first to America since being elected in May, after

the US lifted a visa ban brought on grounds of religious intolerance. The former chief minister of the state of Gujarat has always denied wrongdoing during riots in 2002, in which more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed. In Tuesday’s joint opinion piece in the Washington Post, Mr Modi and Mr Obama said the world’s two largest democracies were “bound by common values and mutual interests” and hailed prior examples of India-US co-operation. But “the true potential of our relationship has yet to be fully realised,” the leaders wrote. “The advent of a new government in India is a natural opportunity to broaden and deepen our relationship,” they said, adding they would work on manufacturing, renewable energy and the environment, sanitation, and intelligence sharing, among other issues. Mr Modi’s visit also included a stop in New York, where he spoke to a crowd of tens of thousands, many of them IndianAmericans, at Madison Square Garden and met top US business leaders. Analysts say Mr Modi’s visit has generated huge excitement among Indian-Americans who believe that he could help to portray India as a rising global power. Source: BBC News

At least 3,700 children in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone who have lost one or both parents to Ebola this year face being shunned, the UN children’s organisation has said. Carers were urgently needed for these orphans, Unicef said. A basic human reaction like comforting a sick child has been turned “into a potential death sentence”, it added. The World Health Organization (WHO) says more than 3,000 people have died of Ebola in West Africa. It is the world’s most deadly outbreak of the virus. The figure on the number of Ebola orphans follows a two-week assessment mission by Unicef to the three countries worst-affected by the outbreak. An earlier version of this story said that 4,900 children had lost parents but the correct figure is 3,700. It found that children as young as three or four years old were being orphaned by the disease. Children were discovered alone in the hospitals where their parents had died, or back in their communities where, if they were lucky, they were being fed by neighbours - but all other contact with them was being avoided. “Thousands of children are living through the deaths of their mother, father or family members from Ebola,” Unicef’s Manuel Fontaine said in a statement. “These children urgently need special attention and support; yet many of them feel unwanted and even abandoned. “Orphans are usually taken in by a member of the extended family, but in some communities, the fear surrounding Ebola is becoming stronger than family ties.” “It is the right thing to do and to send a strong message to the Liberian people. If we were just disciplined enough and everybody was obeying rules, we wouldn’t be here today. I’m sleeping in a room all by myself - my husband has moved into the guest room. At home I

use my own utensils, I disinfect them myself so others don’t get infected. Physically I am fine, mentally like any other human being [there is] the fear of the unknown. My husband… my children have been supportive. The difficulty is the way we used to sit down in the evening, everyone watched TV together laughing and joking. These days they are in their rooms to watch their own TV and I’m in my room to watch mine. I have my grandson here who I can’t hold. He will walk to me and I will tell him: ‘Go back to your mummy.’” The number of Ebola orphans has spiked in the past few weeks and preliminary reports suggest that it is likely to double by mid-October, Unicef said. There was an urgent need to establish a system for identifying and caring for Ebola orphans, it added. Unicef will be holding a meeting on the issue in Sierra Leone next month but before then it wants potential carers to come forward. “Ebola is turning a basic human reaction like comforting a sick child into a potential death sentence,” Mr Fontaine said. “We cannot respond to a crisis of this nature and this scale in the usual ways. We need more courage, more creativity, and far far more resources.” Meanwhile, the head of the new UN mission to combat Ebola says there needs to be significant progress in fighting the disease within the next 60 days. Anthony Banbury said 70% of infected people should be receiving treatment and 70% of burials should be done safely within that period. “It’s an extremely ambitious target and the only way it will be achieved is through this international effort,” he told reporters. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon set up the UN Mission on Ebola Emergency Response earlier this month. Source: BBC News

ISIL under heavy assault by Kurds in Iraq

Kurdish peshmerga forces backed by US and British air attacks have pushed into territory held by ISIL in Iraq, recapturing several towns and villages that had recently fallen to the group. The peshmerga began their assault on early on Tuesday in the village of Basheer, which ISIL captured in June and has used as a base for operations against Kirkuk, a key oil town 15km to the north. A senior peshmerga source told the AFP news agency that his forces, backed by US-led coalition jets, also attacked the town of Zumar, near the reservoir Mosul dam, Iraq’s largest. They also went on the offensive north of the ISIL-controlled city Mosul, Iraq’s second largest. Al Jazeera’s Monica Villamizar, reporting from the Erbil in northern Iraq, said the Kurds had been boosted by air attacks on ISIL by the US-led coalition. “Peshmerga fighters have been in stalemate with the ISIL in the past, but now this is changing. At least in two of these attacks, air strikes were also involved,” our correspondent said. She said the strikes had emboldened peshmerga, who could previously not match the firepower of ISIL. Halgord Hekmat, of the peshmerga, told AFP: “We have pushed ISIL from 30 positions, including in the Zumar and Rabia areas.” He said the advances would aid efforts to retake Sinjar, a town further southwest which ISIL captured in early August, prompting tens of thousands of civilians, mostly from the Yazidi minority, to flee. The US central command said on Tuesday that seven air attacks had destroyed a number of ISIL fighting positions and vehicles in northwest Iraq. The UK said its air force had attacked two ISIL positions to aid the Kurd fighters - the first such attacks in Iraq by the

RAF. Meanwhile in Syria, an ISIL offensive pushed to within kilometres of Kobane, a Kurdish town on the border with Turkey, as Turkish leaders prepared to discuss its role in the US-led coalition against the group. The ISIL advance there has forced tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds to flee across the border, and prompted Turkey to station a company of tanks nearby after shells landed in its territory. Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith, reporting from Suruc close to Turkey’s southern border, said Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was expected to meet military commanders on Tuesday to spell out Turkey’s strategy against ISIL. “The prime minister is expected to present two motions to parliament authorising Turkish forces to operate in both Iraq and Syria, and to allow foreign forces to use Turkish soil in operations against ISIL,” he said. The government previously said it would submit motions to parliament authorising armed forces to take action in Iraq and Syria, so Ankara could join the US-led coalition against the ISIL fighters. Understanding the “Essence of Eid-ul-Adha”

During the annual Hajj in Mecca, Muslims all over the globe commemorate the trials and triumphs of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham PBUH). However, the misinformed people carry on with unwanted practices such as attempting to purchase the most expensive sacrificial animals in competition with others just to show off followed by unjust distribution of meat among the recipients. Greed and sacrifice can’t go together: The misinformed or the most ignorant ones among the Muslim community tend to be materialistic enough to keep the best portion (goat thighs) for self or giving it away to the IN LAWS of daughters in many instances. The Muslims should know: “It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him.” (Qur’an 22:37) Muslims keep debating when to celebrate. ‘Different groups different answers’ is the ongoing attitude mainly responsible for the “Muslims’ disunity. Ridiculously, a huge divide among 1.7 billion Muslims is a laughing matter for “the non-Muslim world against Muslims.” In fact, the regional customs or moon sightings may cause a variation of the date for Islamic holidays, which start at sundown the day before the date specified for the holiday. Since, the Islamic calendar is lunar and the days start at the sunset, so there is usually oneday error depending on when the New Moon is first seen.

According to the Fiqh Council of North America, Eid ul-Adha will be celebrated on October the 4th (based on astronomical calculations). Some Canadian Muslims follow Fiqh Council, while some follow Saudi Arabia. Others who stress upon local moon sighting are likely to celebrate on Sunday, the 5th Oct. India and Pakistan are celebrating on 6th Oct. Like others, for the Canadian Muslims, Eid-ul-Adha is an annual Islamic observance of immense significance. It is also known as the feast of sacrifice or festival of sacrifice as it commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his only son to Allah the Almighty. Furthermore, Eid is celebrated by the Muslims throughout Canada around the 10th to the 13th days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijja). It is a time marked by special prayers and many Muslims gather together for special prayers. Many Muslims also visit family and friends, exchange greetings and gifts, and make donations to the poor and the needy generously. No doubt, Eid-ul-Adha offers the best opportunity for forgiveness and compassion. Performing the Hajj applies to all physically and financially able Muslims worldwide at least once in lifetime. Some Muslims from Canada have gone for performing Hajj. The Qur’an further describes Prophet Ibrahim as follows: “Surely Abrahim was an example, obedient to Allah, by nature

one the very few world leaders invited who refused to attend. It underscored how little environmental stewardship factors into his government’s agenda. His Conservative government has failed to advance strong environmental policy—including transparent oversight, tougher penalties and a price on carbon pollution—and this inaction has had serious consequences for our environment, our international reputation and our economy. Our greenhouse gas emissions are growing, not slowing. Canada will miss its agreed-to 2020 emission reduction targets. Canada has earned an unfortunate international reputation for inaction and obstruction on climate change. It’s all par for the course under Mr. Harper, who manages to go to the Arctic every summer without ever uttering the phrase “climate change”—despite that being where its effects are most abundantly clear. Since 2008, his government has been promising regulations for industrial emissions—and we’re still waiting. Even American President Barrack Obama has said that Canada could be doing more, and that his concern impacts the decision on the Keystone XL pipeline. Climate change is a global problem that requires a global solution. We need determined leadership to make progress, but that can’t happen if our Prime Minister can’t even be bothered to show up. As well, if Canada does not dem-

onstrate to the world that we as a country are serious about GHG emissions, we will find it harder and harder to export our resources to global markets. That is why Liberals are committed to responsible resource development, while promoting clean energy and reducing carbon emissions. As Prime Minister, Mr. Harper continues to get the big things wrong. After nearly a decade in power he has failed to take any meaningful action on Canada’s GHG emissions. His legacy will leave our children with an environment that is ever more threatened.

Employment Insurance (EI) credit for small businesses By: Dominic LeBlanc, MP Liberal Party of Canada House Leader Over the summer Canadians at community events across the country gave Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau a clear message: they are not feeling any relief from the feeble economic recovery. Under Prime Minister Harper, Canada has had the worst economic growth of any Prime Minister since R.B. Bennett. In the past year, only a meagre 81,000 jobs have been created and more than 80% were part-time—with poorer job quality, lower wages and less security. In light of this, the Conservatives’

recently announced an Employment Insurance (EI) credit for small businesses. However, this credit will not encourage the hiring of new workers or produce the growth struggling middle class Canadians need. In fact, only businesses with EI taxes below $15,000 will see any savings – creating an incentive for businesses to fire workers. The plan only encourages businesses to stay small and punishes them if they grow and are successful. There’s still time for the government to choose a better way. For instance, Liberals are proposing an EI premium exemption for every newly-hired worker, which for $225 million could produce over 176,000 new jobs. Canadians deserve a plan for jobs and growth. The Conservatives’ EI plan provides neither. As Parliament returns, Canadians expect their political leaders to address issues like these headon. Mr. Trudeau and his caucus have listened, and are focused on helping the middle class prosper and creating a plan that will deliver real economic growth. That means fixing EI—and increasing investment in infrastructure and education, and expanding trade. We need to get more Canadians hired and create new jobs— this is the only way that we can grow the middle class and expand opportunities for Canadian families.

This has created a rift within asso- Published in last Edition :Al Khaliq name of Allah(swt) and ciation members and scholars and the community at large. Right now, Al Bashir Mohammad(saw) names. Eid will be celebrated on both days.We appreciate the Scholars and Members who have taken a stand for the right decision. It is unfortunate that such serious matters are not dealt with properly especially when the local moon sighting committee and religious scholars meet to make a united decision for Eid day. When this issue reaches your hands, everyone will be busy in preparing for Eid-ul-Adha celebrations. Be it shopping for new clothes, buying groceries and ordering Qurbani for the big Eid feast, Eid brings with itself a busy and enjoyable schedule for everyone. As we celebrate this occasion, we should remember those who have lost their loved ones in various natural and human disasters throughout the world. Specially do not forget the victims of India and Pakistan’s devastating floods. I would like to extend warm greetings to everyone on the Eid-ul-Adha of 1435H. May Allah (SWT) accept the auspicious occasion of pilgrimages of those who made the blessed journey this year (Ameen). May Allah bless all of us with His blessings with the beginning of the new Islamic year 1436 H. We welcome feedback from our readers, so as always; feel free to comment on this issue. Your concerns and suggestions are highly appreciated for improving our quality in future. At the end, I request all Muslim Canadians to be proud of their religious values and live here with peace and dignity as Muslim ambassadors. Promote Muslim businesses and their products and make your contribution in benefiting the Canadian economy. United we stand, divided we fall. Jazakumullah khair

A D FVAE IRT THI S E R Volume 2, Book 26, Number 590: Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

I saw that Allah’s Apostle used to ride on his Mount at Dhul Hulaifa and used to start saying, “Labbaik” when the Mount stood upright.

This celebration takes place on the tenth of the 12th Muslim month (Dhul Hijja) and marks the end of the pilgrimage or Hajj. It is the “Feast of Sacrifice” which is also known as Baqri-Eid (the “Cow Festival”) because its most important feature is the sacrifice of an animal (cow, goat, sheep, or other appropriate beast) in commemoration of the ram sacrificed by Abraham in place of his son. The sacrificial animal should be healthy and free of defects and be more than one year old. This requirement can also be accomplished by donating the equivalent cost of the sacrificial animal to a reputable charity e.g., Islamic Relief, Human Appeal International or Muslim Aid which arranges for its distribution throughout the Muslim world where there is greatest need. The command to perform sacrifices is given in Surah 22.36 and although no specific day is fixed in the Qur’an the sacrificing of animals was already practiced on the last day of the pilgrimage by the pre-Islamic Arabs and this practice has been duly retained. On this day Muslims throughout the world symbolize their willingness to sacrifice their life and property in the name of God and for the cause of Islam. Celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning. Community prayers are held, new clothes are worn, and presents are offered. Families visit the deceased at the cemeteries and offer meat and food to the poor and needy. It is a family occasion and great emphasis is placed on all members of the extended family to support the festivities with their presence. Fasting on Eid-ul-Adha is forbidden as it defeats the whole purpose of the festival, because food is to be eaten on this day with a cheerful heart in remembrance of God’s bounty and provision for mankind. Eid Al-Adha, during the Hajj season, lasts for three days. Eid Al-Adha (also known as the Greater Bairam) during the Hajj season. These celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning. It is a highly recommended sunnah to attend these Prayers. It is also sunnah to hold them outside of the mosque, such as in a park, if possible. It is sunnah to make ghusl (cleansing of the body) before attending, and to wear one’s best clean clothes, even new clothes if possible. Men (but not women) should also apply perfume before the Prayers. Women who are unable to perform salah (ritual Prayer) should attend the `Eid Prayer and sit in the back behind those who are praying so that they can enjoy the festivities of the day. The Sunnah Action On The Day Of Eid ul Adha 1. One should wake up early. 2. It is Mustahab for those who are sacrificing an animal not to eat anything on the morning of Eid-ul-Adha till they sacrifice the animal and partake of the meat of the sacrificed animal. 3. One should make Ghusal, wear new clothes and use Itr before going for Eid

EID UL ADHA An Islamic Joyous Occasion Salaah. 4. One should try and be as early as possible in the Masjid or Eid Gah (open ground for performing Eid Salaah). 5. One should read the Takbeer softly while going to the Masjid or Eid Gah on the day of Eid 6. The Takbeer should be read loudly on the day of Eid-ul-Adha. 7. It is preferable that one uses different routes in traveling to and from the Masjid or Eid Gah. The Time Of Eid Salaah 1. The time of Eid Salaah begins just after sunrise and continues up to Zawaal. 2. No Nafil Salaah should be read before the Eid Salaah. 3. No Azaan or Iqaamah is given for Eid Salaah. Remember the Method Of Performing The Eid Salaah In general, when praying any Salah, always follow the Imam in prayer. Do not make your movements (i.e. bowing, prostrating, etc.) before he does or different from him. Eid prayer consists of two units (Rakat in Arabic, singular is Raka). The main difference in the way this prayer and any other prayer of two Rakat is performed is the number of Takbirs that are done. Takbirs is an the Arabic word referring to when “Allahu Akbar” is said and the hands are raised to the ears. Make an intention of doing two Rakat behind the Imam for Eid prayer along with six additional Takbirs. The First Raka 1: After the Imam has said “Allahu Akbar” the first time, you should raise your hands and follow. This is the first Takbir of the prayer. 2: There will be 3 Takbirs before the Imam starts reciting Quran. Each time the Imam says “Allahu Akbar”, you should follow by raising your hands, then putting them on your sides. 3: After the third Takbir, the Imam will begin reciting the Quran. At that point, you should put your hands on your

chest, with your right hand on top of the left. 4: Listen to the recitation of the Holy Quran. The Imam will recite Surah Al Fatiha (the first Surah of the Quran) and then another Surah. 5: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Ruku (the bowing position). 6: Stand up straight when he says Sami Allahu liman Hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him), and say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” (our Lord praise be to You) in a low voice. 7: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Sujud (prostration). You will do two prostrations as in normal prayer. The Second Raka 8: The Imam will first recite from the Holy Quran (first Surah Al Fatiha and another Surah.

9: After the recitation, before going into Ruku, there will be 3 Takbirs. Follow the Imam. Raise your hands after each “Allahu Akbar”. After the third Takbir, go into Ruku (the bowing position). 10: Stand up straight when the Imam says Sami Allah huliman Hamidah, and say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” in a low voice. 11: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Sujud. You will do two prostrations. 12: After this, you sit for the complete Tashshahud. 13: After the Imam ends the prayer by turning to his face to the right first and saying “Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah” and then to his left and doing the same, you should follow. 14: Do not get up right away. The Imam will give a short Khutbah (speech). The Khutbah is Sunnah and it is Waajib to listen to them. There is a short break between the Khutbah. During Khutbah, all talking or reading is forbidden. 15: After Imam Khutbah say Eid greetings each others. Importance Of Eid

together. To be actually so near the Kabah is to be closest to Allah. Its a entirely out of the world experience!! Celebrating Eid-ul-Adha with your family and friends is similar to that of Eid-ul-Fitr. Eid a Thanksgiving Day Each ‘Eid is a Thanksgiving Day where the Muslims assemble in a brotherly and joyful atmosphere to offer their gratitude to Allah for helping them to fulfil their spiritual obligations prior to the ‘Eid. This form of thanksgiving is not confined to spiritual devotion and verbal expressions. It goes far beyond that to manifest itself in the shape of social and humanitarian spirit. This Islamic form of thanksgiving is a wholesome and rare combination of spiritual devotion and humanitarian benevolence. Eid a Day of remembrance Each ‘Eid is a Day of remembrance. The Muslims pray to Allah and glorify His name in an act of remembrance of His favors. Along with that ,they remember the deceased by praying for their souls, the needy by extending a helping hand, the grieved by sympathizing with them, the sick by cheerful visits and utterances of good wishes, the absentees by cordial greetings and sincere considerateness. Thus the meaning of remembrance on the Day transcends all constraints and expands over far-reaching dimensions of human life.

Eid-ul-Adha is the celebration of sacrifice, and it is important for two reasons. First, during Eid-ul-Adha we remember the spirit of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and how he was willing to sacrifice the person he loved the most, because it was Allah’s command which he had to obey no matter what! Second, Eid-ul-Adha ends the period of Hajj (the 5th pillar of Islam ). Every year, about 3 million people go to Mecca and perform the pilgrimage

Procedure of the Sacrifice

The offering of sacrifice (‘udhiyyah or qurbaani) is of very great virtue. The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘Alayhi wa sallam) is reported to have said that during the days of Dhil Hijjah no other thing is dearer to Allah than the qurbaani (sacrifice) and during these days this good act is better than all others. Every drop of blood that falls is accepted by Allah before it reaches the ground and for every hair of the sacrificial animal, one virtue is recorded for one who offers the sacrifice! Therefore, qurbaani should be done with pleasure and a joyous heart. If anyone has the means, then it is desireable for him to offer sacrifice for the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘Alayhi wa sallam), his wives and other pious Muslims, and also one’s deceased parents and relatives so that their souls may also benefit by this reward. If a person is able but does not offer qurbaani at least for himself, then it will be not only a misfortune but a sin. The method of performing the qurbaani is to lay the animal down on the ground with the head towards the Ka’bah and recite the following du’a: ‘Verily I divert my attention to the Lord Who has created the heavens and the earth: (I do so) as

one by nature upright, and I am not of the idolaters. Truly my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah the Lord of the Worlds – He has no partner and thus am I commanded and I am the first of those who surrender to Him. Oh Allah! (This sacrifice is) from You and for You; In the name of Allah. Allah is the Greatest!’ Then, while reciting Bismillahi Allahu akbar, cut the throat of the animal and then recite the following prayer: O Allah! Accept this from me as You accepted it from Your beloved Muhammad and Your befriended Ibrahim, peace and blessings be upon them both. • It is most undesireable to slaughter an animal with a blunt knife because it is extremely painful for the animal. It is also execrable to remove its skin or to break its bones before the animal is cold. • The period of sacrifice is on any of the 3 days of Eid-ul-Adha but the best time of sacrifice is the first day and then the second. • Offering of the sacrifice should be done after the prayer, not before. • The sacrifice is to be performed by anyone who fulfils the requirements of giving Sadaqatul-Fitr. • The sacrifice of goat, sheep, bull, buffalo or camel – whether male or female – is permissible. • One-third of the sacrificed meat should be given in charity to the poor and the rest is to be consumed by oneself and given as a gift to relatives and friends. However, if less than onethird is given in charity, it will not be a sin.

Miracle Media Group Congratulates all Canadians of Fijian origin at the 44th Independence day of Republic of Fiji. Fiji was colonized by Britain in 1874 and gained independence on Oct. 10, 1970 and became Republic 7 October 1987. The officially Republic of Fiji, is an island country in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 2,000 km; northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. Its closest neighbours are Vanuatu to the west, France’s New Caledonia to the southwest, New Zealand’s Kermadec to the southeast, Tonga to the east, the Samoas, France’s Wallis and Futuna to the northeast and Tuvalu to the north. The country comprises an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of circa 18,300 square kilometres. The furthest island is Onu-i-Lau. The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of almost 850,000. The former contains Suva, the capital and largest city. Most Fijians, i.e. three-quarters, live on Viti Levu’s coasts, either in Suva or in smaller urban centres like Nadi (tourism) or Lautoka(sugar cane industry). Viti Levu’s interior is sparsely inhabited due to its terrain. History Pottery art from Fijian towns shows that Fiji was settled before or around 3500 to 1000 BC. The majority of Fiji’s islands were formed through volcanic activity starting around 150 million years ago. Today, some geothermal activity still occurs on the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni. Fiji has been inhabited since the second millennium BC.In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Dutch and the British explored Fiji, which was a Crown Colony until 1970,. warm most of the year round with minmal extremes. The warm season is from November to April and the cooler season lasts from May to October. Temperature in the cool season still averages 22 °C (72 °F). Rainfall is variable, the warmer season experiences heavier rainfall, especially inland. Winds are moderate, though cyclones occur about once a year (10–12 times per decade). Culture Fiji’s culture is a rich mosaic of Indigenous Fijian, Indo-Fijian, Asian and European traditions, comprising social policy, language, food (based mainly from the sea, plus casava, dalo (taro) & other vegetables), costume, belief systems, architecture, arts, craft, music, dance and sports. Indigenous Fijian culture and tradition is very vibrant and is an integral component of everyday life for the majority of Fiji’s population. However, Fijian society has also evolved over the past century with the introduction of more recent traditions, such as Indian and Chinese, as well as heavy influences from Europe and Fiji’s Pacific neighbours – particularly Tonga and Samoa. Thus, the various cultures of Fiji have come together to create a unique multicultural national identity.

Fiji’s culture was showcased at the World Exposition held in Vancouver, Canada in 1986 and, more recently, at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, along with other Pacific countries in the Pacific Pavilion. Tourism Fiji has a significant amount of tourism with the popular regions being Nadi, the Coral Coast, Denarau Island, and Mamanuca Islands. The biggest sources of international visitors by country are Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Fiji has a significant amount of soft coral reefs, and scuba diving is a common tourist activity. Religion Indigenous Fijians are mostly Christian (40% at the 1996census), and the Indo-Fijians are mostly Hindu or Muslim although a small minority are Christian. The breakdown per the CIA World Fact book is Christian 64.5% (Methodist 34.6%, Roman Catholic 9.1%, Assembly of God 5.7%, Seventh-day Ad-

Day

ventist 3.9%, Anglican 0.8%, other 10.4%), Hindu 27.9%, Muslim 6.3%, Sikh 0.3%, other or unspecified 0.3%, none 0.7% (2007 census). The largest Christian denomination is the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma. (The general secretary is Revd Tuikilakila Waqairatu.) With 36.2% of the population (including almost two-thirds of ethnic Fijians), the proportion of the population adhering to Methodism is higher in Fiji than in any other nation. Fiji is divided into Four Major Divisions: • Central • Eastern • Northern • Western

Eid-ul-Adha Celebrated around the World

Eid-ul-Adha is the Muslim festival that marks the end of the pilgrimage to Makkah known as Hajj. Eid-ul-Adha is also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice, ”and it commemorates Abraham’s faith and devotion to God. According to Muslim belief God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, and although he was a good man and loved his son; his faith and devotion to God was strong enough that he would a accommodate God’s request. Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his own son for God caused God to spare his son’s life, and a lamb was sacrificed in his place. On the first morning of Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world attend morning prayers at their local mosques. At some point, members of the family will visit a local farm or otherwise to make arrangements for the sacrifice of an animal. Allah has given us power over animals and allowed us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name at the solemn act of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way

throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred. The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is mostly given away to others. Onethird is eaten by immediate family and relatives, one-third is given away to friends, and one-third is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes our willingness to give up things that are of benefit to us or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah’s commands. It also symbolizes our willingness to give up some of our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. We recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we should open our hearts and share with others. It is very important to understand that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by Muslims, has nothing to do with atoning for our sins or using the blood to wash ourselves from sin. This is a misunderstanding by those of previous generations: “It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety

Each of us makes small sacrifices, giving up things that are fun or important to us. A true Muslim, one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord, is willing to follow Allah’s commands completely and obediently. It is this strength of heart, purity in faith, and willing obedience that our Lord desires from us. Eid-ul-Adha is a sacred Muslim holiday In Egypt In Egypt Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated by morning prayers and feasting, but it is referred to as “Eid el-Kibr.” Morning prayers at a mosque and a sermon are the tradition of Muslims during this holiday, and after their prayers they meet with their friends and family for a celebratory feast. During this Muslim holiday the wealthy and

charity organizations give beef and other foods to the poor in honor of the sacrifice associated with this holiday. In Pakistan: Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated as a 4 day event in Pakistan; During this holiday stores are closed, and Muslims attend morning prayers and a sermon. After this Muslims will attend a great feast, and those who can afford it will sacrifice an animal to honor god, and they will share the meat with their friends, family, and the poor. In Morocco In Morocco Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated as a 3 day festival, and it is celebrated similarly to other locations. The morning starts with prayers and a sermon at the local mosque, and a sacrifice of a cow, ram, or lamb is made after the sermon and prayers. The

Synopsis by Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Founder and President, Maria-Helena Foundation. On September 20, about 150 people, mostly members of diaspora from Africa and Asia attended this one-day conference at SFU Downtown Campus. The main topics of discussion included: Indian Punjabi Diaspora as agents of change; the potential of fair trade clothing from places, such as, Bangladesh; climate change and rising sea levels in Bangladesh;

use of chemical fertilizers in Sri Lanka; mining and corporate social responsibility; resource management; and low female literacy in Pakistan. It is my assessment that, globally the Sikh diaspora is most engaged and it is changing the face of their province in India. There is a wealth of information on this topic at the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies, University of the Fraser Valley – a good place for Pakistani diaspora to visit; for knowledge, and inspiration.

Life Transitions!

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor It becomes very important to know what personal values we want to achieve in life. Perhaps we can make healthy choices that help us meet the most possible of these values. Making an initial list of our values is usually the easy part. Life is full of surprises. There are often times when we face tough decisions at any given time. As a parent or business professional, you may encounter several circumstances each day which tests your patience, your character and your peace of mind. For some, their values guides and shapes their priorities and reactions. They serve as their markers to tell them if their life is heading in the right direction and if it is, it is turning out the way you want it to. When our actions and words are aligned with our values, life is generally good and we feel content, confident and satisfied. But when our behaviors don’t match-up with our values, we soon begin to sense an uneasiness that begins to swell and grow inside of us. This uncomfortable feeling tells us that not all is good with the world right now. We feel out-of-whack; out-of-touch and generally very uncomfortable. These feel-

ings can be a source of anxiety and unhappiness. Making a deliberate and conscious attempt to identity which values are the most important is needed to keep your anxiety low and your happiness and sense of personal worth and self-awareness high. Regardless if we recognize them or not, values do naturally exist. Our lives can become less stressful and more productive when we acknowledge our personal values. The real challenge - the tough part of determining values comes in the choices we have to make in setting our priorities in deciding which values we will give up or trade off when we face inevitable contradictions. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Ammara Khan (Lead Women Wing PCCA) It is with great pleasure that I want to take the opportunity to introduce myself as the leader of the Women Wing of Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association of BC, PCCA. I am determined to bring forth the change, giving a whole new shape to empowerment of women. Women are the foundation of our society, thus Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association (PCCA) wants to ensure sustainable prosperity, by guaranteeing Women active participation on the decision making table in all fields of life. I have had many conversations together with my team, this year to envision the future of women in our community. My team consists of women, in the fields as diverse as Doctors, Teachers, Yoga, Ceramics, Music, Video Productions, Community Development etc. Together we will continue to find more ways to stretch and grow to empower more women here in Canada. Knowing how creative my team is together, it did not take long for me to finally decide on taking our “creative philanthropy” to a new level. I intend on achieving this by taking our own financial risks, by stretching what we think we can give, by finding ways to draw together in solidarity with the community that continues to grow by leaps and bound. I strongly believe that investment in women is an investment in the vision of a community, of a society and of a country, directly influencing the economic growth, the social welfare and democratic development. Please do come join us at the Women Event 2014 on 12th October 2014, put together exclusively for the ladies, where Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association(PCCA) provides a platform of ideas and vision, to empower women at large.

Tips to get Kids to Eat Healthier

By: YUSRA FAISAL Food habits differ from one child to another and vary according to age and development stages. A three-year-old child is known for rapid growth, which slows down during school years and adolescence. Arab News interviewed nutritionist Dr. Shaima Zahir to learn more about children’s food habits: Children between 1-3 years: The love of discovering starts in an early age in kids, which distracts their attention from food. The child refuses food. One of the mistakes committed by mothers is forcing their children to eat, or completing big amounts of meal. It is recommended to make several small portions, and provide colored fruits and vegetables to attract your kid. Children between 3-5 years: Kids during this stage care about main meals, however, recent studies approved of the importance of snacks, because it forms 20 percent of the daily calories. Foods that cause weight gain should be avoided, like sweetened juices. Parents must start teaching their kids the difference between good and bad food. Children between 5-10 years: Friends are considered the most essential factor that influences food habits in this age. Kids start comparing themselves with other

kids, so their habits and attitude change. Some tips that help your child to gain healthy food habits: • Keep your kid busy with choosing and preparing meals. • Try to make new meals and avoid routine in food. • Make sure to provide your kid with healthy homemade snacks, instead of snacks from out. • Wake your kid up early for a healthy breakfast before school. • Look for a sport your kid loves practicing. • Share your kid’s meal so that you can be his role model, because kids love to imitate their parents. • Avoid using food as a motivation/punishment for your kid. • Turn-off the TV during the meal because it makes them consume big amounts of food. Childhood is the most problematic period when it comes to food. Eating disorders may occur in different ages. One such problem is compulsive eating and usually the cause of this is the family. It is widespread among big families where food is served all the time. Some mothers like to see their kids chubby and fat and thus end up using rich recipes so that the children gain weight. What they do not realize is that the child’s fat cells are being formed in that age and which can lead to obesity in the future. On the other hand, loss of appetite is very common among children and is more likely to be found in hyperactive kids. They tend to be busy in playing instead of eating. In such a case, there should be a fixed time at which the entire family eats. The mother must get to the bottom of the problem and find out if it is related to the child’s psychological state as the problem may intensify in case of moving to another place.

Gems & Jewels

By: Rahma Khan Marwa & her little sister, Shahad, were happily watching TV after dinner one night, until their grandma came and asked them to go to bed. “But Grandma, we just started a little while ago!”cried Marwa. The 2 girls ran to their mother without waiting for a reply from the grandma. “Mama, Grandma is so mean!” cried Shahad. “Why can’t she live in Uncle’s house?”she whined, rudely. “Hush, Shahad! Honey, you’ll hurt Grandma’s feelings. I think we should go upstairs and have a talk” said Mama. And she lead the girls upstairs to her room and closed the door. “Mama, Grandma always complains

about everything!” cried Shahad. “Shhad, I think you really shouldn’t talk like this. Do you know how important it is to respect your grandparents?” asked Mama. “Allah (SWT) said in the Quran : ‘Not the slightest ‘uff ‘ sound is allowed to be said to your parents; especially grandparents’”explained Mama. “But Grandma always wrecks our fun!” cried Shahad. Mama sighed. “I’’ll tell you a story about the Prophet(SAW)...As he was crossing the 7 skies on Meraj, all the Prophets stepped forward to greet him except his great grandfather-Prophet Ibrahim(AS) who didn’t step forward. But Prophet Muhammad(SAW) went and greeted him instead” explained

Mama. “Do you know why?”she asked. “That’s how Allah (SWT) wants to show the respect of our elders. He wants us to understand that the presence of our grandparents at home are a blessing, as they are the jewels of family, and their duaas are the worthless gems” said Mama. “But...but Grandma never lets me have any fun anymore and I don’t like it” said Shahad. “Shahad. Grandma does let us have fun” said Marwa, understanding the point of Mama’s story. “No she doesn’t” replied Shahad, going out of the room. Mama sighed again. The next day, Grandma announced that she was going out. “I’ll be back really soon”she said. And she headed out

the door with her purse. As she came back, she called Marwa and Shahad. “I have surprises for my favourites!”she cried. And they both came running downstairs, happily. She handed Shahad her present. “Do you like it, dear?” she asked. “I love it so much! Thank you, Grandma!” cried Shahad. “You deserve it. You two girls have been so nice to me... always listening to me, helping me whenever I needed it, thank you very much” said Grandma, handing Marwa her gift. Shahad instantly gave her grandma a great big hug. “You’re the best, Grandma!” she cried.

NFL: Husain Abdullah penalty wrong

Husain Abdullah should not have received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty after dropping to his knees and bowing in prayer following a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown during the Kansas City Chiefs’ 41-14 victory over the New England Patriots on Monday night, the NFL said Tuesday. According to Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 (d), “Players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations or demonstrations while on the ground.” “However, the officiating mechanic in this situation is not to flag a player who goes to the ground as part of religious expression, and as a result, there should have been no penalty on the play,” NFL spokesman Michael Signora said. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil liberties and advocacy organization, issued a statement early Tuesday asking that the NFL take steps in response to the penalty. “To prevent the appearance of a double standard, we urge

league officials to clarify the policy on prayer and recognize that the official made a mistake in this case,” CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said. After Monday’s game, Abdullah told reporters that he thought the referees were flagging him for the slide, not prostrating in sajdah -- a common Muslim practice. “For me, I just got a little too excited,” Abdullah said, according to the Kansas City Star. “I think it was for the slide.” Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged as much when Abdullah came to the sideline after his picksix gave Kansas City a 41-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. “He said, ‘You can’t slide,’” the sixth-year free safety said. Abdullah played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2008 to ‘11, then took a year off to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. He said if he ever returned an interception for a touchdown, the celebration would be automatic. “If I get a pick, I’m going to prostrate before God in the end zone,”

he told reporters, according to the Star. Reid didn’t agree with the call at the time. “When you go to Mecca,” he said, referring to the end zone, “you should have the privilege to slide anywhere you want to slide. We have two priests in here. I think they will vouch for me.” Indeed, there were two pastors sitting in Reid’s postgame news conference. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty touched off a firestorm of controversy on social media, with many wondering how it was different from players dropping to one knee in Christian prayer. Abdullah is in his second year with the Chiefs after spending an entire season away from the game. He decided that, in the prime of his career, he would join his brother Hamza -- who also was playing in the NFL at the time -- to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. The fifth pillar of Islam is the hajj, the pilgrimage that all Muslims are supposed to make once in their lifetime. Abdullah, who also fasts

Younis Khan, the Pakistan batsman, has lashed out at the PCB and selectors for dropping him for the one-day series against Australia and saying he is also “out of contention” for the World Cup. He challenged the selectors to build a team without him in the mix and said he will remain sidelined until the 2015 World Cup but will not retire. “Don’t select me, not even in Tests. I sacrifice my future,” Younis, 36, said on the sidelines of the ongoing domestic T20 tournament in Karachi. “I am saying a simple thing, if they are saying that youngsters are future of ODIs, then where is the future of Pakistan in Test cricket? Don’t select me in Test matches and make [the youngsters] the future of Pakistan in Test cricket too. But what will happen if they can’t make a team for ODIs and Test matches after five months, will they again do recalling? “I won’t die and I won’t be 70-year-old in four-five months, if they don’t let me play with dignity then so be it. They have hurt me, they have hurt me when they said that players like me have no

future. Then who has a future? So a player like me should shoot himself? When they are 35, 36, players like me wake up at seven ‘o’ clock, show commitment, I can do only this. Instead shoot ourselves, don’t play cricket at all, don’t play domestic cricket at all? I will wait for 4-5 months. They are saying that I don’t have a future, I will wait, I am not retiring, I will wait, may this team go ahead, if they make the team [strong] I won’t come back.” Younis was recalled into the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour in August, after a year and a half. But he had to leave the tour midway, to return to Karachi, because of the death of his nephew. In his only ODI in the series, he scored 3 off 7. While announcing the squad for the Australia series, Pakistan’s chief selector Moin Khan said the decision to select Younis for the Sri Lanka series had “backfired”. “I came back after almost 17-18 months, but they said he is not in our future plans. Who has a future then? I give my 120% as a player, I am perhaps the only cricketer [who does so]. I am not say-

ing drop a youngster and let me play. I am just saying that justice should be done with players like me, give us what we deserve. My nephew died and I came back. When they do such things with senior players, what will youngsters think. Change doesn’t come like this, you can’t wave a magic wand. “Don’t let everyone be treated in a similar manner, those who have raised the flag of this country, don’t disrespect them otherwise no youngster will play for Pakistan.” During 30 minutes of fury, Younis said he had never called selectors to win them over and buy himself time but had always played his cricket with dignity. He also said that it is becoming a habit in Pakistan cricket to disregard players who have served the game well. “Javed Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf went while crying. When Inzamam was leaving, I was the one who went and clapped for him. Is this my mistake that I am a Pakistani? Is this my mistake that when youngsters struggle they come to me instead of going to coaches and I do help them? I try to help

during Ramadan, told the Associated Press in an interview last year the brothers wanted to make sure they did the pilgrimage while they still had the health and means to go. In the case of Hamza, it proved costly. He never got a shot to return to the NFL. Husain Abdullah said he didn’t expect any repercussions from his penalty Monday night, least of all from his coach. After all, it was Reid who gave him an opportunity to work his way back into the league after he had stepped away. “I’m pretty sure he understands who I am, what my faith is,” he said. “And again, I think the prostration is all right. It’s the slide. Come to a full stop, get down, make the prostration, get up and get out.” Source: ESPN

Pakistan, and still I am surprised that I have played for 14-15 years for Pakistan. “I never told anyone to back me in media or phoned anyone [about selection]. If I deserve Test matches and ODI I should be given chance. Is this my fault that I don’t go to selectors? I don’t call them? I don’t meet them before going for the match? England media was very harsh on us in 2009, when they used to allege us that we were doing ball tampering, then I stood firm and I defended Pakistan. I was the captain when Pakistan won the World T20. If this is my mistake, then my suggestion to youngster is don’t play for Pakistan. Don’t think about playing for Pakistan.” Source: Cricinfo f
