UN observers team visits working boundary
. A team of the UN Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) on Monday and Tuesday visited the villages which have been badly hit by Indian firing in the Charwah, Chaprar and Pukhlian sectors on the working boundary near Sialkot, says a press release. The team of UN observers met the villagers, witnessed and gathered a first-hand account of the damage caused to human lives and property due to the recent Indian hostility on the working boundary. As many as 12 innocent Pakistani citizens have lost their lives due to unprovoked Indian firing, 11 among them on the working boundary, while one embraced Shahadat at the LoC. Sixty-four civilians have been seriously wounded due to the recent Indian shelling. The Indians have committed 24 ceasefire violations on the working boundary and 26 on the LoC since October 1, 2014 and have been targeting the civilian population living in villages all along the working boundary. The day to day life of the civilian population has been badly affected. Many people have fled their homes and taken refuge in safe places. The observers’ team also visited the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Sialkot and met civilians who have been injured due to the unprovoked firing by the Indians.
It may be mentioned here that Pakistan on October 9 lodged a strong protest with the UNMOGIP over the unprovoked Indian firing/shelling on the working boundary and LoC and urged the UN team to visit the working boundary and LoC to have a first-hand account of Indian hostilities. It is pertinent to mention that as per the UN resolution, Pakistan fully utilises the good offices of UNMOGIP which is in place on both sides along the LoC and working boundary to investigate such incidents or violations by either side. It is also relevant to highlight that Pakistan offers full access to the UNMOGIP observers to investigate and bring facts before the world. However, the Indians have always been reluctant and deny access to UNMOGIP observers on their side. At least 20 civilians have been killed and thousands of people on both sides of the LoC have fled their homes in what residents have described as some of the worst shelling in years. The army said on Tuesday it had voiced concern at the continued Indian firing across the LoC and in Punjab. “A routine weekly hotline contact was established today (Tuesday) between directors of military operations of the Pakistan and Indian armies,” a senior military official said in Islamabad on condition of anonymity. “The Pakistan Army’s director of military operations conveyed concern to his Indian counterpart and pointed towards India’s consistent unprovoked firing on the civilian population living along the LoC and the working boundary.” Islamabad said on Friday that both countries shared a duty to defuse the situation, while India’s foreign ministry maintained that “de-escalation is now entirely in Pakistan’s hands”.There had been hopes of an early resumption in peace talks between the two countries, when India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to attend his swearing-in in June. But India called off talks last month after Pakistan consulted with Kashmiri separatists, in a move some saw as a sign of a tougher stance under India’s new right-wing government. Govt’s bottomless debt gallops to $149bn till July 2014
The government is blindly plunging country into bottomless debt as Pakistan’s total public debt has galloped to $149 billion, including $65 billion foreign debt and $84 billion domestic debt as of July 2014. Speakers at a press conference jointly organised by Institute for Social and Economic Justice (ISEJ), Campaign for Abolition of Third World Debt (CADTM Pakistan) and Tax Justice Roundtable in connection with Global Week of Action against International Financial Institutions (IFIs) October 8-15 2014 at Lahore Press Club here on Wednesday said this would make every Pakistani indebted to $825. The current debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio is 64.27 percent, violating the Fiscal Responsibility and Debt Limitation Act (FRDLA). This is bleak situation. The Nawaz government is constantly taking new loans and stealing from people’s pockets through imposing heavy taxes and billing in order to repay the IFIs and creditors. The government should stop blind borrowing, generate revenue through progressive taxation and set up debt audit commission to dig out illegitimate debts, they remarked. ISEJ Director and focal person CADTM-Pakistan Abdul Khaliq said Pakistan needed a financial system, which should allow its people to hold their governments and IFIs accountable for their policies and actions. The people of Pakistan are less and less ready to bear the injustice at the hands of governments and lenders. Poor people are being forced to contribute to pay back the loans, never spent on masses welfare.
Pakistan is ruled, most of the time by the IFIs-backed military dictators who directly governed the country for 32 years (during its 67 years life). These dictators, during their respective tenures, not only undermined the democratic institutions in the country but also incurred heavy debt to Pakistan, with almost 80 percent owed to IFIs, including International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and Asian Development Bank. The intermittent democratic stints and political leadership of Pakistan did not make any meaningful effort to single out of the clutches of the international financial institutions, pushing Pakistan gradually in vicious debt spiral. Rather rulers misused loans and misappropriated money was siphoned off, he said. There is need to set up debt audit commission to dig out illegitimate loans and corruption. It would give the government and public opinion the necessary evidence and arguments to cancel/repudiate the part of the debt that has been found to be illegitimate. But it is not sufficient in order to get Pakistan out of the crisis. It has to be complemented with significant measures to generate revenue; like progressive taxation to tax the rich. Economist Dr Qais Aslam said the poor taxation system was at the heart of economic woes of Pakistan. “The country has the lowest tax-to-GDP ratio in the world and a taxation system that is characterized as unjust and discriminatory. With 0.9 percent of the people of Pakistan paying taxes, it comes as little surprise that it is unable to generate enough revenue to end debt dependency and break the shackles of the IMF and creditors. Not a single offender has been prosecuted for tax evasion in 25 years in the land of the pure, which shows the government apathy towards issue of tax avoidance and evasion. The system in Pakistan offers easy escape to those who do not pay taxes so the affluent classes, business centres continue to evade taxes while the economy suffers. Government seems in no mood to introduce progressive taxation bringing the rich into the tax net. The consequences of the crisis have thus been made much worse by the alleged remedies, the main aim of which is to protect the interests of capital holders, he added.
Women in Struggle for Empowerment Executive Director Bushra Khaliq said a significant part of the public debt in Pakistan was illegitimate since it has resulted from deliberate policies by governments that have decided to systematically favour the moneyed classes to the detriment of other marginalised sections of society. Dictators debts, donor-dictated mega faulty projects, IFIs neoliberal conditions, tax reductions on higher incomes, personal wealth and the profits of private corporations have led public authorities to increase the public debt so as to compensate for the drop in government revenues. British MPs back UN chief slams ‘provorecognition of Palestine cations’ in Jerusalem
British MPs have voted in favour of recognising Palestine as a state in a move which will not alter the government’s stance on the issue, but which carries symbolic value for Palestinians in their pursuit of international recognition. The UK does not classify Palestine as a state, but says it could do so at any time if it believed it would help peace efforts between the Palestinians and Israel. David Cameron, UK prime minister, abstained from the vote, which was called by an opposition MP, and Cameron’s spokesman earlier said that foreign policy would not be affected whatever the outcome. However, the vote was closely watched by Palestinian and Israeli authorities who are seeking to gauge European countries’ readiness to act on Palestinian hopes for unilateral recognition by UN member states. The final motion, which passed by 274 votes to 12 at the House of Commons, the lower house
of the parliament, stated “that this house believes that the government should recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel as a contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution”. The vote comes just as Sweden’s new centre-left government is set to officially recognise Palestine, a move that has been condemned by Israel, which says an independent Palestine can only be achieved through negotiations. Earlier on Monday, violence flared in East Jerusalem when hundreds of Israeli police forces raided the alAqsa mosque compound and clashed with Palestinian worshippers. Protesters in East Jerusalem have fought almost nightly with Israeli security forces in recent days. The unrest has been fuelled by a number of factors, including the murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdair and the recent war in Gaza. Source: Al-Jazeera
Early clinical trials of a Canadian Ebola vaccine are being launched at an American research institute, research that Health Minister Rona Ambrose hopes could one day stop the spread of the virus. The tests on a small number of healthy people will, however, take at least two months, and if successful would require further trials – making it unclear when, if ever, the vaccine could be deployed to frontline health care workers or others. Ms. Ambrose made the announcement Monday as Canada continues to boost border security measures in a bid to prevent the spread of Ebola to Canada. People travelling from West Africa, where Ebola’s impact is most severe, to Canada – roughly 30 people per week, Ms. Ambrose says – are now facing screening from a quarantine nurse at the airport when they arrive in Canada, though Ms. Ambrose acknowledged the screening may not be effective if a person has no symptoms. Canada’s top public health officials, meanwhile are due to speak Tuesday to discuss what, if anything, hospitals and governments need to do to boost protection against the spread of Ebola. Canada’s experience during the SARS crisis has prepared it well for limiting the spread of infectious diseases, Ms. Ambrose said. Health Canada has regularly stressed that the risk to Canadians remains low. Gregory Taylor, Canada’s chief public health officer, said changes to front-line protections will be made if necessary but that he’s confident the procedures in place are adequate. “My understanding is [the existing procedures] should be adequate,” Dr. Taylor said at a news conference Monday. The phase one clinical trials announced Monday are being conducted at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Maryland. During the trials, healthy patients will be given a dose of Canada’s VSV-EBOV vaccine to assess its safety, figure out the appropriate dosage and test for side effects. The vaccine – designed for use by a person before he or she is exposed to the virus – was developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada, which licensed the rights to a company, NewLink Genetics, and its subsidiary. That company is now working with the American Defense Threat Reduction Agency to develop the vaccine for use. The phase one trials are due to be complete in December. Trials likely focusing on testing in Africa would follow, Dr. Taylor said. Phase one trials in Canada, Europe and Africa are also being considered. “This is truly Canadian innovation, and the fact it was developed in house by Public Health Agency researchers is really a phenomenal accom-
plishment,” Ms. Ambrose said. A second potential vaccine developed by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and GlaxoSmithKline is also currently undergoing phase one trials in the United Kingdom and the West African countries of Mali and Gambia. Early testing of the Canadian vaccine in primates has been 100 per cent effective in stopping the spread of the virus, Ms. Ambrose said, calling the beginning of trials a “very positive and hopeful” development. “If the Canadian vaccine is proven to be safe and deemed effective, it will stop this devastating outbreak,” the minister said. If proven effective, though, another hurdle lies in the way of vaccine deployment – supply. Dr. Taylor said there may not be enough of the vaccine even to inoculate front-line health workers in the most affected region. Instead, a randomized vaccination program could give some health workers the vaccine and others a placebo, the doctor said. Canada has pledged 800 to 1,000 doses of the vaccine to the World Health Organization, though they haven’t yet been shipped. Ms. Ambrose said the Canadian government hopes a shipment will take place in “the very near future. The quarantine officers are in place at six airports across the country, Health Canada says – Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Halifax. Under the system, travellers who have been to West Africa will be questioned by border guards before being diverted for screening, such as a temperature check. The officer will determine if further tests are needed. “This is just one measure as part of an overall suite of measures being developed,” Ms. Ambrose said, later conceding: “border measures will only protect us if that person is showing symptoms.” Ms. Ambrose stressed that there are no direct flights between Canada and the West African region where the impact of the virus is most severe. Roughly 30 people come to Canada from that region per week, and the government knows of 219 Canadians in the region at the moment. Ms. Ambrose urged those who are not working on Ebola response to leave the region if possible, while commercial flights are still available. “We don’t know how this will unfold. Obviously things are changing day to day,” she said. The minister said she’s confident Canadian hospitals are prepared to limit the spread of Ebola if a case pops up. “Our front line hospitals and clinics do have good training, especially after our experience with SARS, in dealing with infectious disease prevention,” Ms. Ambrose said. Canadian Ebola vaccine to start clinical trials as Canada boosts border security measures
UN chief Ban Ki-moon has spoken out against “provocations” at Jerusalem’s holy sites, hours after Israeli police clashed with Palestinian protesters near al-Aqsa mosque. “I am... deeply concerned by repeated provocations at the holy sites in Jerusalem. These only inflame tensions and must stop,” he said at a joint news conference with Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah. Ten people were reported injured earlier on Monday when Israeli forces confronted demonstrators protesting against Orthodox Jews entering the al-Aqsa complex to celebrate the festival of Sukkot. The Palestinian news agency, Maan, said Israeli forces fired stun grenades, tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steel bullets at Palestinian protesters during the clashes. A group of Palestinian activists had overnighted in the mosque, which is Islam’s third holiest site. On Wednesday there were similar clashes as youths threw stones and fired flares at police after Jewish visitors ascended to the compound on the eve of the week-long holiday of Sukkot, or the Feast of Tabernacles. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said that on Monday youths again threw stones and incendiary objects at security forces and set up makeshift barricades. When police began to disperse them, the protesters took refuge inside al-Aqsa mosque, which the Israeli police are not authorised to enter, she said. The site is the scene of frequent clashes between police and Palestinian youths, who object to what they see as an attempted Jewish and Israeli
takeover of the site that is administered by Jordanian and Palestinian Muslim authorities. It houses Islamic holy sites the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa mosque and is revered by Jews as the location of the biblical Jewish temples, considered Judaism’s holiest place. Non-Muslim visits to the al-Aqsa complex are permitted and regulated by police, but Jews are not allowed to pray at the site for fear it could trigger major disturbances. Jews pray instead at the Western Wall below. Monday’s visit to the area by the Orthodox Jews eventually went ahead without further incident, police said. Palestinian men under 50 and all women were denied access to the holy site for the Jewish holiday, and scuffles broke out as Palestinians were turned away from the mosque. Al-Aqsa is an underlying cause of Israeli-Palestinian tension, which has heightened in Jerusalem since this year’s Gaza conflict. The UN chief on Monday called for the two sides to revive a stagnant peace process that collapsed in April despite intense US efforts. “I urge Palestinians to show courage and continue engaging in the... peace process... [and] Israelis to do the same,” Ban said. “I welcome renewed international political leadership and action. Time is not on the side of peace. “We need to act immediately to prevent a deepening of an already unsustainable status quo... this is the only way to avoid yet another tragic conflict in the future,” he said. children to education.“ Malala, now 17 and the youngest recipient of the Nobel prize, is an education campaigner in Pakistan who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman two years ago. She was at school in the city of Birmingham in central England when she was told she had won the Nobel Peace Prize, a spokeswoman said. “Malala is at school as normal today,” she said, adding that the 17-year-old would hold a press conference later on Friday. She attends Edgbaston High School, a private school in an upmarket part of Bir-
mingham. After being shot by the Taliban in October 2012, Malala was treated at a hospital in Birmingham. She started at her school in the city in March last year. Satyarthi, 60, has maintained the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and headed various forms of peaceful protests, “focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain,” the Nobel committee said. “It’s an honour to all those children still suffering in slavery, bonded labour and trafficking,” Satyarthi told TV news channel CNN-IBN.

“And Now the Modiism”
It’s vastly believed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a unique phenomenon in Indian politics. Admittedly, his love for India is quite obvious, so is his hatred for Pakistan and Muslim population. Aside from his inherent flaws, Modi’s transformational leadership is inspirational beyond doubt. It’s usually thought that Modi goes a step ahead of Indira Gandhi because Ms Gandhi had an ideology, whereas, Modi is focused on----power, power and more power. With more power, Modi should be able to resolve the toilets issue: By one estimate, some 300 million women and girls in India defecate in the open. Most of them belong to underprivileged sections of the society and are too poor to afford toilets. “Ending open defecation is an urgent priority that needs to be addressed, for the benefit of women and girls who live in poverty and without access to privacy and a decent toilet.” Experts believe that India needs to scale up its war on sanitation with a special emphasis on women.
But for B f a country which hi h aspires i for f superpower status, lack of toilets is an enduring g shame. On his stump, the new Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Hindu nationalist BJP had promised,”Toilets first, Temples later”. He needs to do that sooner to save lives of more women (source Indian media) Coming back to Modi’s attitude regarding Pakistan and the Muslim population: Most probably, Muslims on both sides of Indo Pak border are hardly comfortable with the moody personality of ‘Modi in power.’ Historically, Modi’s passive support for anti Muslim Gujarat riots and Samjhota express bloodshed of unarmed innocent Muslim men, women and children was highly brutal and shameful act. On the contrary, people in large number regardless of ethnicity, color or creed find a high quality in Modi’s administrative ability and his genuine delivery to his nation during his tenure as Chief Minister is praiseworthy. Furthermore, as Prime Minister he has passion to take India to the maximum height
ffor providing idi financial i l prosperity i to his people. Other “good thing” is Modi is a “bad news” for the lazy Indians but the worst of all is Modi appears determined to be denying right of self determination (Plebiscite) otherwise available to the Kashmiri Muslims under original UN resolution. Other problem is he is not doing anything to stop the ongoing cross border bombing which was initiated by the Indian forces on Eid ud Duha. Pakistani forces are only firing in defence and not targeting civilian areas. Furthermore, his anti Pakistan rhetoric make him look like Hitler. The irony is he employs anti Pakistan attitude just to gain more political mileage. Moreover, firing along the disputed and working boundary between India and Pakistan has left at least 17 civilians dead. The Himalayan territory of Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored de facto border of LoC but is claimed in full by both the countries.
“Pakistan “P ki considers id that h United U i d Nations resolutions must be the base for any solution of Kashmir,” Sharif remarked. He further said that, “People of Kashmir should be part of any solution of Kashmir. UN should honor its own resolutions. Any solution which is endorsed by all parties including Pakistani, India and Kashmir will be the only acceptable solution.” Conclusion: India offers a good model of governance under Modi and the Pakistani ruling elite must adopt simplicity and avoid the infamous VIP culture. The corruption will automatically come to an end if the top man is simple, fair, motivated and enjoys command and authority as truly mandated democratically. And, Modi should rid himself of anti Pakistan feelings for the sake of regional peace and prosperity. Non resolution of Kashmir issue is clear evidence of failure of United Nations. So Kashmir issue must be resolved amicably sooner the better.
Malala, a Hope for the Oppressed According to the electronic and print media, the seventeen year old teen ager Malala Yousafzai was brutally shot in the head by Taliban gunman two years ago as she was on her way home from school. Though she is an international figure, yet she can’t return to Pakistan for fear of her safety. But for the world and for a significant number of Pakistanis including schoolgirls in her native town of Mingora, Swat she remains a hero. There are some who blame her for having helped build a bad image of Pakistan by publicising what had happened to her. Those people view her as a product of western propaganda favouring the western interests. Upon her survival, she displayed an amazing courage to rise up for the cause of the oppressed young
girls; she even ignored threat to her life. She continues to serve as a great source of inspiration for such women all over the world. She has said so succintly, “I raise my voice not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard.” This is why, the people from all across the world showed their jubilation over the news of her recent winning of the Nobel Peace Prize. The fact is many Pakistanis are happy as the heroic struggle of the young lady has made Pakistan proud among the international community. The Nobel Peace Prize went to 17-year-old Swati/Pakistani female child Malala Yousafzai and India’s Kailash Satyarthi (60 years old) for their work promoting children’s rights.

Our youth deserves better leadership opportunities and guidance By:Sikandar Hayat Cadidate Surrey School Board Trustee Youth leadership is the practice of young people exercising authority over themselves or others. During adolescence, young people experience profound physical changes, rapid growth and development, and sexual maturation, in addition to psychological and social changes. These changes often lead to issues with personal identity and emotional independence. Adolescents may engage in behaviors considered to be experimental and risky. Due to the changes during these years, several important public health and social problems either begin or peak during these years including suicide, substance use and abuse, sexually transmitted infections, and teen and unplanned pregnancies. Many people portray adolescents as inevitable problems that just need to be “straightened out” before they can do too much harm. We are severely lacking programs
The impressive thing is Malala is the youngest person to be awarded the globally prestigious annual prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize saying that peaceful global development can only come about if children and the young are respected. She is internationally recognised for continuing to fight for girls’ rights to education. “This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances,” the committee said in a press release. It also said that the prize recognised work by Satyarthi (Indian citizen) to head various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. Malala now happens to be the youngest-ever Nobel Laureate in
113 years since 1901, when this prestigious award was first given. Prime Minister Stephen Harper pledged to make Malala an honorary citizen during last year’s speech from the throne, but it wasn’t until the last Friday that the government made another reference to her citizenship. In a statement, Harper said Yousafzai will visit Ottawa on October 22 and receive her citizenship. “We look forward to pursuing our collaborative efforts on children’s education,” he said. She is known as an outspoken international advocate for the right of girls to go to school. She becomes the sixth person to receive honorary Canadian citizenship and the youngest to receive Nobel Peace Prize. . Waan laysa lil insaniilla ma’ sa’aa

MLA Ralston tables petition for GAZA Kids More than a thousand Surrey residents have signed a petition asking Premier Clark to bring children seriously injured in the Gaza conflict to B.C. hospitals for treatment. Premier Kathleen Wynne has already agreed to do so in Ontario.“There is widespread support for this request among my constituents in Surrey,” said Ralston, MLA for Surrey-Whalley and the New Democrat spokesperson for multiculturalism.“I’m calling on Premier Clark to follow Ontario’s example.” The request to Canadians to help both Palestinian and Israeli children came from Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish of Toronto. His book, “I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey,” was inspired by the loss of three of his daughters to Israeli shelling in 2009. The Ontario health system will open its doors to children seriously injured in the four-week conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas. The Ontario health minister, Eric Hoskins, announcing the decision of the Ontario government, told the Toronto Star, “We believe we have a moral responsibility to respond in this instance.” Letters Cont Pg 12

Indian PM pledges funds Ebola outbreak killing after deadly cyclone 70 percent of victims
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a rescue package of $163m after Cyclone Hudhud, which struck India’s east coast, killed at least 22 people and damaged thousands of homes. Modi, who on Tuesday took an aerial survey of cyclone-hit areas of the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, also announced compensation of $3,270 for the kin of those who died in the cyclone, and $816 for the injured, according to local
newspaper Times of India. Schools remained shut, electricity lines were down and communication systems were only partially working in the port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, where cyclonic winds smashed into the coast at 200km per hour on Sunday. Residents in parts of Visakhapatnam jostled and shoved each other as relief trucks distributed food packets and water bottles, according to the AFP news agency. Essential goods were in short supply as arterial roads were impassable and bus, train and flights were suspended. Mass evacuations before the onset of the cyclone helped avert a larger human tragedy, officials said. But about 250,000 people from Andhra Pradesh and thousands in neighbouring Odisha state were affected by the storm, many of them poor fishermen and farmers. More than 40 National Disaster Response Force teams were engaged in rescue efforts, along with the navy and dozens of divers. Large swathes of crops were damaged and livestock was killed by raging winds accompanied by torrential rains. Source: Al-Jazeera
Richest 1% own nearly half of global wealth: report
The richest 10 per cent of the global population holds a whopping 87 per cent of the world’s wealth, says a new report, which also warns that a hike in interest rates could dampen overall growth in wealth. The Credit Suisse Global Wealth report for 2013-14 has found that an individual needs only US$3,650, in addition to the equity in their home, to be among the wealthiest half of the world’s citizens. However, more than $77,000 is required to be a member of the top 10 in global wealth-holders, and $798,000 to be among the top one per cent, the report said. “Taken together, the bottom half of the global population own less than one per cent of total wealth,” the report says. “In sharp contrast, the richest (10 per cent) hold 87 per cent of the world’s wealth, and the top percentile alone account for 48.2 per cent of global assets.” The report notes that wealth distribution may change, particularly if “a sufficient number” of low-wealth countries experience rapid growth, or if China and India “fulfill their potential to be major catalysts of global change. “The combination of unusual stock market growth, robust housing markets and favourable exchange rate movements is unlikely to be repeated soon, so future prospects for wealth are more muted,” the report also warns. “Indeed, they may well be negative if the downward trend in interest rates in recent years goes into reverse, and asset prices begin to fall.” Overall, though, global wealth is growing “at a record pace,” and has surpassed the $250-trillion mark for the first
time ever. According to the report, total global wealth rose 8.3 per cent, or $20.1 trillion, between 2013 and 2014 to hit a new record of $263 trillion. Wealth is still highest in North America, where growth was “particularly strong” at 11.4 per cent year-on-year, according to the report. At $91 trillion, wealth in North America represents 34.7 per cent of total global wealth. Europe came in second, with growth of 10.6 per cent year-on-year, to $85.2 trillion. That represents 32.4 per cent of total wealth. A particular focus of this year’s report is wealth inequality, which fell slightly in many countries before the financial crisis of 2007-08. However, it has been on the rise since 2008, “especially in the developing world.” In nearly all countries, the mean wealth of the top 10 per cent is more than ten times median wealth, while mean wealth for the top one per cent is more than 100 times median wealth, the report found. In the most unequal nations, the mean wealth of the top one per cent can be 1,000 times the
The Ebola outbreak in West Africa kills seven out of 10 victims and new cases could hit 10,000 a week within two months if it is not brought under control, the World Health Organisation has said. The organisation’s assistant director-general Dr. Bruce Aylward said on Tuesday that the death rate was higher than the official 50 percent rate and that “a lot more people will die” if the West Africa outbreak was not stopped. “What we’re finding is 70 percent mortality,” said Aylward, adding that he had a “working forecast” of 5,000 to 10,000 new cases a week by December to guide the international response. “It’s been running at about a thousand cases a week now for about three to four weeks,” he said. “The labs sometimes can’t keep up with the amount of specimens they’re getting.” WHO figures released on Tuesday show 8,914 confirmed cases and a total of 4,447 people dead. However, the organisation has said several times that the tallies are unreliable due to difficult recording conditions and workload. Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia have been hardest hit. “There are this many cases that we’re aware of, this many deaths that have been reported to us, but that doesn’t mean you divide one by the other and get how many this disease kills,” Aylward said. “To get that number, you need to take a bunch of people, follow them right through the course of their disease, and understand how many survive. That subset of people, who we know were sick, and we know their final outcome, what we’re finding is 70 percent mortality, it’s almost the exact same number across the three countries,” he said. Aylward said that the WHO needed to isolate 70 percent of cases within two months to contain the outbreak. “Every time you isolate another
median wealth. “A combination of factors” has sent wealth inequality on a downward trend throughout much of the 20th century, the report said, suggesting that “a new era” had emerged. “That downward trend now appears to have stalled, and possibly gone into reverse.” Looking at current wealth inequality trends, only three developed countries fall into the “very high inequality” category, meaning the top 10 per cent control more than 70 per cent of wealth. Those countries are Hong Kong, Switzerland and the United States. Meanwhile, 12 emerging markets fall into that category, including Brazil, India, Russia and South Africa. Canada falls into the “medium inequality” category, meaning that the top 10 per cent control more than 50 per cent of the wealth. That is in line with Australia, Finland, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, among other countries. Between 2000 and 2014, wealth inequality
patient, every time you have a safe burial, you’re taking some of the heat out if this outbreak,” said Aylward. “But this is Ebola. This is a horrible, unforgiving disease. You’ve got to get to zero.” In Berlin, a UN medical worker infected with Ebola in Liberia has died. The St Georg hospital in Leipzig said on Tuesday that the 56-yearold man, whose name has not been released, died overnight of the infection. The man tested positive for Ebola on October 6, prompting Liberia’s UN peacekeeping mission to place 41 other staff members under “close medical observation”. Meanwhile, the UN warned on Tuesday the world is failing to gain the upper hand against the deadly outbreak. “Ebola got a head start on us,” said Anthony Banbury, head of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response. “It is far ahead of us, it is running faster than us, and it is winning the race,” the Briton told the UN Security Council in New York, by remote link from UNMEER headquarters in Accra. “If Ebola wins, we the peoples of the United Nations lose so very much,’ he said. “We either stop Ebola now or we face an entirely unprecedented situation for which we do not have a plan,” Banbury stressed. rose in half of the 46 countries monitored in the report. Of the G7 nations, however, wealth inequality only grew in the United Kingdom. The report notes that several factors contribute to the level of and changes in wealth inequality. Asset prices, such as housing and stock prices, have a major impact in the short term, the report says. In the long term, economic growth, demographics, savings behaviours, homeownership, inheritance, and government policy can all impact wealth inequality. According to the report, some 3.3 billion people, or more than 70 per cent of adults worldwide, have their wealth fall below US$10,000. Another one billion adults, or 21 per cent of the adult population, fall in the $10,000 to $100,000 range. Some 408 million adults, or eight per cent of the population, each have a net worth above $100,000. Source: CTV News

October is Islamic History Month
Islamic History Month Canada is an educational and cultural project originated, developed and sponsored by the Canadian Islamic Congress. The objective of IHMC is to motivate and inspire Canadian Muslims to annually share their history, heritage and culture with fel-
low Canadians during one month, to be called the Islamic History Month Canada (IHMC). This goal is to be achieved through community and public events such as; exhibitions, lectures, celebrity tours, book fairs, and other complementary activities.
This will be a month in which Canadian Muslims celebrate and share our diverse civilization, including our contributions to the arts, sciences, medicine, architecture, humanities, music, spirituality, and every area of human knowledge. It will become a permanent part of Canada’s multicultural calendar with similar events across the country and will build bridges of understanding and appreciation between
Muslims and all other Canadians. Moreover, IHMC will enhance Canada’s ties, both economically and culturally, with other Muslim countries. The IHMC Advisory Board includes senators, public figures, academics, inter-faith activists and Muslim community leaders. In Masjid As-Salam, Burnaby, the BC event of IHMC will be held. A D FVAE I RT THI S E R Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 5.172Narrated by Aisha Ashura’ (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance. The Prophet (saws) also used to fast on this day. So when he (saws) migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.
Use of the Lunar Calendar The Islamic Calendar is based on the Lunar Calendar consisting of 354-355 days annually and is 10-11 days shorter than the western Solar Calendar. The Lunar month is based on the time it takes the moon to complete a single orbit around the earth and it is just over 29? days. There are many advantages to the Lunar calendar. For example, the various dates in the Islamic Calendar such as Ramadan and Hajj rotate every year and are not fixed like the Solar Year. People, therefore, will perform acts of worship in various climatic conditions and in different length of hours in submission to the will of Allah where human imagination plays no part. The new moon marks the beginning of each new lunar month and it is easy for people to see the new moon and know that a new month has begun. This probably explains why most ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians, the Jews, the Greeks and the Egyptians in the Middle East , the Aztecs and the Incas of the West, and the Hindus and the Chinese of the East used this system. Interestingly, the English word ‘month’ is derived from the word ‘moon’.
Origin and Significance of the Hijri Calendar The Islamic Calendar was started by the second Caliph Umar (RA) in 16 AH/ 637 CE [Al-Tabari: Tarikh Al- Rusul 5/22 & Ibn Sa‘d: Tabaqat Al- Kubra 3/281]. The event of the Hijrah, the
migration of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, was chosen to begin the Islamic Calendar because it was the first major sacrifice made by the whole Ummah for the preservation of Islam in its formative period. Ibn Hajar, in his Fath AlBari, records that the Caliph Umar (RA) is reported to have remarked: “The Hijrah has separated truth from falsehood, therefore, let it become the Epoch of the Era”. The Hijrah year reminds Muslims every year of the sacrifices made by the first Muslims and should prepare them to do the same. The constant use of the Hijri Calendar for acts of worship and as a frame of reference to major historical events will help Muslims keep links with their roots and further enhance their knowledge of their religion and history.

Determining Islamic Dates
Islamic dates are determined by the actual visibility of the moon as the Prophet (SAW) said: “Fast by seeing it (the moon) and end the fast by seeing it” [Bukhari & Muslim]. Muslim scholars have interpreted this Prophetic saying in two different ways. Some scholars, such as Al- Shafi’i, have held the view that each location has its own sighting of the moon (Ikhtilaf al-Mutali‘) [Sayyid Sabiq: Fiqhus Sunnah 3/112]. But most scholars from the other Schools of Law have taken the words “fast by seeing it” (sumu li ru’yatihi) as a general command to all Muslims and not individual sectors of the community. Hence they regard the sighting of the moon in one region as Months of the Islamic Calendar valid for people of another region, provided the There are twelve months in the Islamic news of sighting the moon reaches them through Calendar as the Qur’an says: “Surely authentic means [Ibn Taymiyyah: Majmu‘ah Fathe number of months in the sight of tawa 5/111]. Allah is twelve, in accordance with His decree from the day He created Muharram\ the heavens and the earth, out of which This is the first month of the Islamic Calendar four are sacred” (9:36). These twelve and one of the four Sacred Months (al-Ashhur months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi‘ al- Hurum). It is recommended to fast during al-Awwal, Rabi‘ al-Thani, Jumada al- this month as there is a Hadith which says: “The Ula, Jumada al-Ukhra, Rajab, Sha‘ban, best fast, after Ramadan, is in the month of MuRamadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa‘dah and harram” [Muslim]. This may be an indirect refDhul Hijjah. The four Sacred Months erence to ‘Ashura and not to Muharram in gen(al-Ashhur al-Hurum) are Rajab, Dhul eral because, according to Sayyidah Aisha R.A, Qa‘dah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram the Prophet (SAW) fasted most in Sha‘ban after [Bukhari]. The sanctity of these months Ramadan [Bukhari & Muslim]. was also accepted in the Pre-Islamic era Significance of the Hijrah for Muslims Muharram heralds the beginning of the Islamic when fighting was forbidden.
Names Of A l l a h (SWT) & Mohammad (PBUH) Al Bari name of Allah(swt) and Al Mashhud Mohammad(saw) name.
Cale n d a r . T h e Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his Companions (Sahabah) from Makkah to Madinah was much more than a simple migration. It was a turning point in the history of Islam. It was a revolution and complete transformation of society. The Muhajirun (emigrants) of Makkah gave up their family, property and homeland for the sake of religion and the Ansar (helpers) of Madinah welcomed them with great hospitality. Thus a unique brotherhood (mu’akhah) was created between them, hitherto unknown in human history. By highlighting the Hijrah, Muslims will reaffirm their need to be in a state where they can practice their religion and make the necessary sacrifices to achieve that aim, including emigration. Hijrah also has a deep spiritual significance where Muslims commit themselves to leave the state of disbelief (kufr) and sin to enter that of Islam and piety. That is why the Prophet (SAW) said: “The best emigrant (Muhajir) is the one who leaves what Allah has forbidden” [Bukhari] Although the practical usage of the Islamic Calendar is increasingly diminishing, nevertheless the foundation of many acts of worship such as Zakah, Sawm and Hajj revolve around this calendar and it is one of the hallmarks (shi‘ar) of Islam that differentiates Muslims from other communities. Undoubtedly, there is a great need for Muslims to reaffirm their cultural heritage by using the Islamic Calendar on a regular basis and not just during Ramadan and Eid.

Delimiting the LoC
By Sikander Ahmed Shah THE recent border skirmishes between Pakistan and India along the Line of Control have claimed the lives of many civilians. Firing along the LoC is routine and often indicative of a dip in ties between the two countries. But what is the LoC’s significance? Is it a de facto border, immutable and inviolable? What level of political or legal significance does it hold for Pakistan? The LoC started off as the “ceasefire line” created under the 1949 Karachi Agreement. Its terminus was defined to extend up till “Khor, thence north to the glaciers”. India unilaterally annexed the Siachen glacier in 1984, and attempted to alter the LoC eastward beyond NJ9842 through force, in violation of the Karachi Agreement and the 1972 Simla accord. Pakistan’s position, reflected in the majority of official world maps, interprets “north to the glacier” to follow its natural north-westerly course extending the LoC up to the Karakoram Pass. Under the Karachi Agreement, the ceasefire line was to be monitored and violations reported by the United Nations Military Observers, a role inherited in 1951 by the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Under the Simla Agreement, the ceasefire line was converted into
the LoC and with minor alterations retained its previous shap The Simla pact mandates both countries to respect the LoC and “refrain from the threat or the use of force in violation of this line”. It prohibits any attempt to unilaterally alter the LoC’s course. After the accord, India argued that the UNMOGIP mandate had lapsed because the Karachi Agreement stood terminated — a position rejected by the UN secretary general. Under international law, both the Karachi and Simla treaties have to be read together to supplement each other. Two treaties on the same subject matter are interpreted this way unless they are in conflict or a contrary intent is expressed in the treaty that follows later. While Pakistan continues to report violations of the LoC to the UNMOGIP, India stopped doing so in 1972. A few months ago, India asked UNMOGIP to vacate its
Delhi office on the premise that it “has outlived its relevance”. UNMOGIP agreed to look for alternative accommodation, but stressed they would continue to operate under their mandate. Under international law, an objectively and professionally produced map is strong evidence of a precise boundary line. It is now
well recognised that maps are evidence of the intentions of a state, and a state’s acquiescence in and recognition of a boundary. Maps can be determinative of a dispute over a boundary if they are annexed, or otherwise integrated as part of a legal instrument such as a treaty. Maps and other cartographic material such as surveys produced by government officials, while not conclusive, are accorded probative value by international tribunals. This was reaffirmed in the decision (2002) of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission working under the auspices of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Today, official Indian maps include entire Jammu and Kashmir as Indian territory. However, official Pakistani administrative maps including those produced by the Survey of Pakistan designate J&K as ‘disputed territory’. Historically, Pakistan has been hesitant to demarcate the LoC on official maps. Perhaps it fears that such action might condone the permanency of this transient boundary and adversely impact the right of self-determination of the Kashmiris. The fear is that marking the line on its maps could translate into accepting that India has perfected title over territory west of the LoC. However, Pakistan should aggressively ac-
knowledge the authority it exercises over territory under its control west of the LoC, including through the delimitation of the LoC on official maps. This is because in the unlikely event that India somehow in the future manages to forcefully annex J&K territory under Pakistan, its claim to title to such territory would be much harder to justify under international law. While the decision to mark the LoC on official maps is politically sensitive, Pakistan should start delimiting the LoC on official maps to safeguard its legal position. The LoC should clearly extend up till the Karakoram Pass so that the whole of the Siachen Glacier appears west of it. It, however, should qualify the LoC through clear textual annotations on maps acknowledging that it is a temporary ceasefire line agreed to between India and Pakistan under the Karachi Agreement read in conjunction with the Simla Agreement; that the LoC is monitored by the UNMOGIP under Security Council Resolution 91 (1951); and that it serves as a de facto border — without prejudice to the inherent right of self-determination of the Kashmiri people as guaranteed to them through a plebiscite under numerous Council resolutions — till a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute materialises. Miracle Special: Every Single Vote Matters
“One man. one vote” is the most fairest method to choose leaders in any democratic society. Voting is patriotic right to choose your representative government. A citizen’s vote is a secret ballot. Voting is the most important exercise a citizen will do as a responsible citizen of a democratic nation. In a functioning democracy, being able to vote allows citizens to express their political opinions by voting a particular policy or candidate that has your best interest in mind. By this, you can decide your very own future by opting a candidate who might speculate your own aspects and possibly those people who share the same opinion with you. Voting is a right of all eligible voters in any country. It is seen as the normal or typical form of political activity and it remains the primary means of political participation. The goal of any voting system is to establish the intent of each individual voter and translate those intents into a final tally or reality. According to Abraham Lincoln; “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent” This further explains that in a truly democratic society, governments are instituted among qualified and responsible men who derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. Another ex-American president, Lyndon Johnson have this to say in support of Abraham Lincoln that “The right to vote is the most basic right, without which all others are meaningless”. Voting is the first duty of democracy. Government is based on citizens votes for representation. In a democracy, your vote is your voice and the act of standing up for what you believe. Voting helps to preserve our way of life. The elections for the City Councils of BC
Cities in November 2014. Nonetheless, it is of the essence for every voter to cast his/her vote, for every single vote matters in the elections. So far as the local Muslim populace is concerned, it is of crucial importance for it to go to the designated polling stations of their respective areas to exercise it’s hard-earned right of franchise that has been bestowed upon the people being the citizens of the country of its adoption. Every vote matters in the democratic set up of the sitting councils, where the people are its real architects. This is the precise reason that the Miracle newspaper is strenuously creating awareness in the Islamic community for its positive and energetic participation in the electoral process, may that be satarted from city level. It is, however, regretted to point out that despite the repeated wake up calls the local Muslim Ummah does not deem appropriate to pay heed to the wake up alarms and let the opportunity of sending more of its representatives in the cities councils slip out of its hands. Consequently, the representation of this community at all the levels of governance is devastatingly much below its proportion. This is appallingly dismaying picture in comparison to the other ethnic communities around. Now when the time for getting something substantial has practically run out owing to the fault of none other than the community itself, it is futile to cry over the spilt milk. All than can (and ought to) be done at the moment is to work hard for the success of the Muslim candidates (no matter which slate or independent candidate for City Councillor or School Trustee they belong to or where lie the roots of their origin) in the fray by consolidating all the
Muslim votes in their respective areas and bringing the voters out of their homes for casting their votes at the polling boots. Putting together of every solitary vote matters for winning the elections in the same way as the little drops of water are required to contribute their might to make an ocean. The youth volunteers of both the sexes can accomplish this productive job conveniently and effectively. Besides, it is equally imperative for all the organizations of the community operating in this area to formulate some tangible plan and educate the people for future on this issue of crucial importance, as the cycle for the forthcoming Civics elections at different levels continues to roll ahead on the footing of three years term under the law. If You Don’t Vote, DON’T For every one that complains that they don’t like how the City Council is running things now and for every one that thinks the Council is on the right track, today is your day — Election Day. Nobody in this world has the right to complain about how our City Council are working, and how our representatives are voting agaist any public issue at city levels, is unless he or she has voted. Voting for our representatives is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we do have the power to change how council works through our vote. Voting takes very little time, and if you did not vote for a candidate you should not complain, because you did not even take the time to vote for those people who make the decisions. However, the sad fact of this world is that most people do not vote. They do not think it is worth the time; they don’t think their one vote will matter, and they think that there is
nothing that can be done to fix the way politics are now. Those people are wrong. While change is never easy or fast it can be done, and voters have proven they can speak with one very loud voice. The only thing someone can do that is worse than not voting is voting blindly. Voters need to make sure they are sending someone into office they think can do the best job. Read the newspaper today, and get a grasp on the people running for City Councillor and School trustee, and then go into the voting booth. Better yet, take a minute right now to contemplate what issues are the most important to you and your family at city levels and then take a look at what the candidates believe in. If you don’t know what you believe in, don’t complain when someone does it for you. In short, go vote. These are the people that represent you in City Councils and Education Boards and make decisions that directly affect your public life, your childrens like city infrastructure, Education, Housing, Police Crime Control cell and other utilities problems in your daily life Do the job right, and make sure they are representatives you believe in.

Letters & Opinions
Coming Civic Elections By: Bilal Cheema, Surrey As many of you know, in less than a month, we will be afforded our civic right to vote in the municipal elections, choosing our representatives for city council and Mayor. More than any other level of government, the municipal level affects its residents more directly. We are affected by the decisions at City Hall on the regular; throughout the entire year. Alhumdulillah, I get great joy when I visit our mosques across the lower mainland. They are increasingly full at prayer times and definitely at Jummah Salaat every Friday. Some mosques even have two Jummah Salaat’s. This speaks to the continued growth of our community. It’s something to be proud of. I want to honour all those pioneers of our Muslim community who helped build, nurture and support the growth of our community here in British Columbia; particularly the Lower Mainland. Without your efforts, we would not have the social infrastructure to learn and practice our Islamic religion. You don’t have to look any further than Surrey to witness the growth. Muslims from all across the world are choosing Surrey and other parts of the Lower Mainland as there home. Muslim businesses and restaurants are popping up everywhere. Mainstream supermarkets are starting to cater to our community by carrying Halal products. Political aspirants are showing up at our mosques and functions to meet and celebrate with us. Let me circle back to the start of this piece. In less than a month, we will be afforded our right to vote in the civic elections. People will beg us to vote, offer us rides, and provide heated seating areas at polling stations (elections are in November after all), among other things. Don’t take this lightly brothers and sisters; compare this to the participation you or your family members are afforded in your country of origin. Recently, we had a show of solidarity in Surrey where approximately 10,000 members of the community prayed Eid al Fitr across an open soccer field under the umbrella of British Columbia Muslim Association. It was tagged as a show of strength. Politicians were invited to show that the Muslim community has arrived; our actions suggested they take notice because we have numbers. Now to the point. What good are those numbers if we don’t participate in an election? What value do we lend to the right to vote and participate? And if we don’t participate, what right do we have to complain after the fact. Please remember, whether we vote or not, these people will still take decisions on our behalf. Please vote and encourage your family members to vote. Take them with you. Take your civic responsibility seriously. Because, if we do, it won’t be long before we have a Muslim councilor, MLA or MP. Vote your conscience. Educate yourself about those who put there names forward. Find out about there platforms. Invite them to meet with you, your family and friends. I also want you to notice who comes to seek your support at our mosques. This is important because it shows they know you exist. Of the current group of council and Mayor, I have to thank and recognize our friend Councillor Tom Gill. He stays in touch with respect to community needs and always shows up to support and celebrate our events. At the very least, we should support these types of people. In shaa Allah, my family and I will. However, I am disappointed that Surrey First Mayoral candidate Linda Hepner believes that our community doesn’t matter. She has not shown up to a single event at any of the mosques during this extended campaign period and since she was appointed the mayoral candidate for her party. She was invited to attend the City’s own sponsored “Open Door’s” event. She didn’t show up. She didn’t show up to participate and lend her support to the Eid al Fitr event and just recently didn’t show up to celebrate Eid al Adha with our community. If this is the way we are being treated just prior to an election, please ask yourselves how we would be treated after an election she wins. Are you okay with the complete disregard she has shown for our community? Why would she encourage Muslim candidates when she doesn’t even want to associate with them. This is a serious cause
C O N T .
for concern. On the flip side, I have heard form brothers and sisters that another mayoral aspirant Doug McCallum has been showing up at mosques seeking support and talking about community concerns. I was pleasantly surprised by this action of his. You wont know where candidates stand if you don’t have an opportunity to interact with them. Whether he wins or not, I salute Mr. McCallum for recognizing our community exists, have multiple mosques across the city and has taken the time to visit them and talk to our people. That’s how you gain the community’s support. Brother and sisters, please think before you act upon your right to vote. Make a decision that benefits the most, not individual causes. And please do not let others divide and conquer us; we don’t need intermediaries from other communities to liaise between us and our elected representatives. We are growing, but we are sophisticated enough to deal directly with our governments. Unity is demonstrated over a significant period of time, not at single, one time events. Let’s make an effort to work, consult and trust one another. No doubt Allah will bless the path that’s taken with unity and sincerity.
Vadodara riots: Rights body blames BJP govt, Hindu groups By: Manas Dasgupta South Africa. A fact-finding team of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has found that the recent communal riots in Vadodara city, the “cultural capital of Gujarat,” was not an isolated incident but had its genesis in the “growing influence of the BJP and the right wing Hindu groups, over the police and the state administration”. PUCL, a human rights body formed by socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan in 1976, charged the BJP government in the state with “commuanlising the situation and giving free hand to the right wing Hindu groups, like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, as it might be feeling that the bogey of development was no longer effective to continue to secure people’s support”. Drawing a parallel between the minority massacres in various parts of the state 12 years ago and the riots in Vadodara during the Navratri celebrations last month, the PUCL in its report claimed that the nightmare of the 2002 riots virtually re-visited some of the minority families in certain parts of Vadodara with police entering their houses and mercilessly beating up the residents in the name of searching for the alleged antisocial elements. The report, which was submitted to the National Human Rights Commission, the state home department and the state Director General of Police, said the complaints received by the human rights activists in the city had alleged that policemen in plainclothes, known as “D” staff, whose movements were not recorded officially, had entered the Muslim-dominated neighbourhoods after midnight and arrested young boys indiscriminately. “There are reports of police abusing verbally and physically assaulting women in very similar pattern as witnessed during the 2002 riots,” it said. The report pointed out that even in 2013 at least 151 cases of “communal conflicts” between very isolated groups were recorded in Vadodara city alone, it said the communal tension began as isolated outbursts in May when the country was going to the General Elections and then Gujarat Chief Minister and the BJP Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi was contesting from Vadodara, but the situation did not deteriorate to the extent of being considered a law and order problem. But it began to intensify during the runup to the by-polls after Modi vacated Vadodara in favour of Varanasi and started aggravating around the by-elections on September 13. It further alleged issues like “love Jihad” elsewhere and the call given by some right wing Hindu organisations for restricting Muslim youths from entering the Garba dance venues fanned communal feelings. It added despite the requests of some women and social organisations to CM Anandiben Patel to stop the “hate propaganda,” the state government refused to prevent “anyone from participating in the Navratri festivals.”
Eid on different days –Creating unnecessary confusion and agitation By: The Majlis. Surrey Eid on different days has been a valid practice in the Ummah since the inception of Islam, and there never existed the unnecessary confusion, acrimony and stupidity which deviates, modernists and miscreants of this era are kicking up to secure their baseless objective of a universal Eid – Eid on the same day all over the world. This year in Saudi Arabia and its bootlicking states, Eidul Adha was on Saturday, 4th October. In South Africa and many other countries Eid is today, Sunday 5th October. In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh Eid will be tomorrow, Monday 6thOctober. These differences do not initiate any problem for the Ummah. It casts no aspersion on the hallucinated ‘unity’ of an Ummah which is already torn to shreds by fisq, fujoor, bid’ah and kufr. On the assumption that this Ummah as it exists today has mounted the loftiest pedestal of piety and unity, then too, Eid on different days would not cause even the slightest kink in its unity. Just as Salaat at different times does not adversely affect the unity of the Ummah, similarly, Eid on different days does not affect the unity of the Ummah. Furthermore, an Ummah which is appallingly disunited and fragmented, cutting at the throats of one another and stabbing treacherously at the hearts of one another, cannever be united by submitting to Saudi hegemony thereby celebrating Eid on the same day. Unity in the wake of celebrating Eid on the same day, is an hallucination of people who lack intelligence, and who lack understanding of the Shariah. Unity is the consequence of complete submission to the Shariah and adoption of the Sunnah. In the wake of Obedience to Allah Ta’ala, comes unity. Confirming this fact, the Qur’aan Majeed declares: “It is He (Allah) Who has aided you (O Muhammad!) with His help and with the Mu’mineen. And, it is He Who has created mutual love in their hearts (the hearts of the Mu’mineen). If you had to spend whatever there is on earth (all of its wealth), you will not be able to create mutual love in their hearts. But, it is Allah Who creates love amongst them. Verily, He is Mighty and Wise.” (Al-Anfaal, Aayat 62) Unity is not the product of stupidities nor the consequence of hallucinatory prescriptions and remedies conjectured by the unqualified, moronic self-appointed reformists of the Ummah. The Unity commanded by Allah Ta’ala is interwoven with the “Rope of Allah”, i.e., the Shariah. The Qur’aan Majeed states in this regard: “Hold on firmly to the Rope of Allah, and do not split up.” A confused Brother writes: “Today (Friday 3rdOctober) is the day of Arafah in Saudi Arabia for the whole Ummah of our Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and with that, Insha-Allah, tomorrow (Saturday 4th) is Eidul Adha. But in South Africa it is Eid on Sunday. Please, may you give me some reasons why it is this way?” Friday 3rd October was the ‘day of Arafah’ for only the Hujjaaj, not for the “whole” Ummah. Eid in the whole world was not on Saturday 4th October as the Brother has wrongly concluded. In many countries Eid is today, Sunday 5th while in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and perhaps other countries too, Eid will be tomorrow, Monday 6th October. The greater segment of the Ummah is averse to submitting to Saudi hegemony. The Shariah obliges us to establish the Islamic months in accordance with the commands of Allah Ta’ala as transmitted to the Ummah by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). In terms of the teachings of Islam, the 9th of Zil Hajj for us is on Saturday, not Friday. We are required to fast (a Sunnat Fast) on the 9th Zil Hajj, i.e. when
it is the 9th for us, not when it is the 9th in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, the Saudi regime is absolutely corrupt, faasiq and faajir and extremely oppressive. It has no respect for the laws of the Shariah. It plots the Islamic months according to its whimsical desires and whatever political objectives it may have. Sighting the moon is not of any importance in Saudi Arabia. They go by their own calculations. Eid for us is the 10th Zil Hajj, i.e. when it is the 10thin our country, not when it is the 10th in Saudi Arabia. Bootlicking states and communities submitting to Saudi hegemony do so for monetary objectives. In Gambia, the Old Guard of the population has rejected the Saudi decree. However, the bootlicking government in Gambia has issued a proclamation banning Eid on Saturday. Those who dare to celebrate Eid on Sunday will be arrested. This is the effect of Saudi hegemony which is the consequence of bootlicking the Saudi regime for monetary handouts. Even here in South Africa we have the miscreant bootlickers who have been desperately slogging to impose Saudi hegemony on the Muslim community. Insha-Allah, in South Africa the bootlickers who also happen to be bootleggers, will not succeed. There shall remain here the ‘tiny’ group mentioned by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), who will remain steadfast on the Haqq and keep Eid on different days in accordance with the Shariah’s tenets of determining the commencement of the Islamic months. According to the Shariah, those agitating for a baatil unity are simply blowing a lot of hot air “full of sound and fury signifying nothing”. The chimera of a false unity which the bootlickers are dangling holds no appeal for people of intelligence. For those who submit to the Shariah thereby refusing alien hegemony, the Qur’aanic criterion is: “Then We have established you on a Shariah regarding (all) affairs. Therefore follow it, and do not follow the vain desires who know not.” 10 Zil Hajj 1435 – 5 October 2014
The Mission in Iraq By: Marc Garneau, MP Liberal Party of Canada Critic for Foreign Affairs
ISIL represents a real and present threat to the Middle East region. It has ruthlessly and systematically killed thousands throughout Iraq and Syria – innocent civilians, ethnic and religious minorities, humanitarian workers, and journalists – displacing hundreds of thousands more in its wake. Both the security threat and the urgent humanitarian crisis created by ISIL require international action. The question is not whether Canada can contribute to this effort; we can, and we must. The question is this: in the context of a widescale, international effort to confront ISIL, what is the most effective contribution that Canada can make? The Liberal Party of Canada believes that our efforts are best devoted to the humanitarian side of the equation. Displaced Iraqis who have been forced from their homes at the hands of ISIL need our help. Canada is uniquely positioned to be a leader in the humanitarian efforts in this region. In addition, we can and should facilitate the resettlement of Iraqi refugees here in Canada. We also have unique capabilities that should lead us to focus our time, personnel, and financial resources on non-combat roles such as strategic airlift, training, and medical support. We have repeatedly said that there is a clear line between a non-combat and combat role in Iraq. If the Prime Minister wants to take Canada across that line, he must make the case to Canadians as to why this is a necessary step for our country. The Prime Minister did not make this case. For this reason, the Liberal Party opposed the government’s motion to go to war in Iraq. However, now that the decision has been made to send the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces into harm’s way, they have our—and all Canadians’—full and unwavering support.

Iraq Revolution, Not DAESH Terrorism a frivolous and tyrant ruler we would not witness this popular revolution. It is not fair to deny the right of a nation to revolt against a government which disregarded and disrespected the nation’s constituents.
By Ahmed Al-Jarallah Editor-in-Chief, the Arab Times HOW can a group of terrorists — a few thousand fighters — overrun a full-fledged, well-trained army on which the government has spent $20 billion and armed them to the teeth with the latest sophisticated weaponry? How could this army run away from the advancing DAESH fighters? If DAESH fighters have the power to dictate terms to tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers and the ability to occupy their camps and seize weapons in a matter of few hours, why did they not continue the advance and fully realize their plan? Why did they occupy only the governorates they entered? By the way, these governorates have been witnessing peaceful protests over the past two years. What is happening in Iraq is a mere justification for sectarian massacre because at stake are not one or two houses, but entire governorates and millions of people living in them over vast areas. Add to this the scenario of two hundred thousand soldiers who discarded their weapons, abandoned their posts and ran for their life ‘naked’. If not for
To those who are trying to convince us that Iraq has fallen in the claws of the ‘DAESH’ monster, we ask: Did we not see the people of the cities confronting DAESH fighters to prevent them from destroying sepulchers and sanctuaries? Did we not see the people refusing to obey their unclean laws? Those who want to put a tag on DAESH to what is happening in Iraq, want to see Iraq embroiled in chaos and raise hell whose fires will continue to burn for more than one hundred years. To the contrary those who seek good of this big Arab country have to be realistic and look at the demands of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have staged peaceful demonstrations for two years, but the new dictator has preferred to oppress them. Over the past two years the people have been demonstrating peacefully although some of them even faced death, yet they opted for a peaceful solution to their ordeal and then what did they gain? Their leaders were pursued; they were accused of betrayal and labeled atheists. They were also shunned from recruitment and prevented from leading a normal life as equal citizens. Millions of Iraqis were punished for a crime they did not commit. They were punished for crimes committed by Saddam Hussein and this is the truth. Until when will the Iraqis who disagree with the policy of the new dictator be treated as second, third or even tenth degree citizens? Finally, the popular revolt ran out of control. The curtain was raised and the misery
which lay hidden for such a long time came to the forefront because the Iraqis were not ready to turn the clock back and live the era of ‘no country’ and anarchy. All theories of discrimination were toppled. This is the truth which all people must realize and look for a way out of this crisis — the crisis which will destroy what little remains of Iraq. Everyone must stop rallying behind sectarian emblems. They must also stop fueling doctrinal conflicts which will turn against those who are using it as a tool for self protection. The conflict in Iraq is not between the Sunnis and Shiites. The Iraqi Sunnis are the ones who have protected and defended with their bare chests the Shiite shrines, just not today, but throughout past centuries. It is enough testimony to mention the shrine of the two Imams ‘Al-Askaris’ in Samarra — the shrines taken care of and defended by the Sunnis and even gave their lives to prevent its destruction. No rational person would think that a party such as that of Nouri Al-Maliki is the only legitimate representative of the Iraqi Shiites — the enlightened Shiites who together with their national icons are demanding Al-Maliki to step aside to solve the problem and to douse the ‘fire’ that he and his ally Iran can never extinguish if he continues to be stubborn. Indeed, the ongoing crisis in Iraq is a fight for power and revolt against marginalization on the one hand, and the end of the era of the militias and the beginning of a real country that does not discriminate between citizens on the other. Indeed, the crisis in Iraq symbolizes the end of weapons outflow and death squads and the end of extremist and radical groups, not only in Iraq but the entire region. It is the end for mercenaries, in Lebanon, Iraq and even Yemen.
Therefore, the blood which is being shed cannot be downplayed. If Iraq becomes the epicenter of sedition it will undoubtedly tarnish both Islam and the Arab world. This if the new dictator is allowed to play his card. It is unfortunate Al-Maliki does not see the burning inferno — a result of his irresponsible policies. He persists to hold on to power and refuses to form a government of national reconciliation. It looks like he is reading from the same pages of the book when the dictators set fire to their countries to remain in power. In short, Al-Maliki is refusing to rescue his country from imminent catastrophe and salvage it from bloodshed. It appears, he has no problem sitting on the throne of skulls. Will the people of Iraq choose to return to the era of dictatorship even if under the pretext of sectarianism? Wrong is the one who thinks the people of Iraq will accept that. Therefore, the browbeaters must stop in their tracks. There will no escape for the Iraqis should they fail to topple the dictator.

Law and order By: Nasik Swami GOVERNMENT will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt Fiji’s new democracy or thwart the will of the people. That’s the word from Defence Minister Colonel Timoci Natuva as he assured the nation that law and order would be maintained while delivering his maiden speech in Parliament yesterday. Col. Natuva said his ministry would have zero tolerance for any disturbance or disruption. “When the Prime Minister said recently that people can sleep soundly in their beds at night without need for fear, he meant it,” he said. Col. Natuva said his job and the job of the police backed by military was to make sure that the promise was delivered. “Our duty remains to protect every Fijian, our infrastructure, our values, our sovereignty and our economy on which the prosperity of everyone depends,” he said. Col. Natuva said the global security environment was dynamic and constantly changing. “With a diverse range of threats that are on our horizon, our national security sector needs to be agile, flexible and adaptable to mitigate whatever threats may come our way and defeat them if necessary. “To this end, we are strengthening our capabilities across the board, including our intelligence.”He said it was globally accepted that security was the platform for development.“Therefore, the maintenance of internal stability and meeting our internation-
al security and defence obligations will be the overarching requirement. “Over the next four years, I intend to ensure that all the arms of the national security sector are made more efficient and effective by instituting a reform program that will ensure the necessary democratic controls and civilian oversight equated with our new democracy is clearly established and respected.” Col Natuva also revealed that he will increase the capabilities and capacities of the two disciplined services.“This will allow them to effectively and efficiently deliver to the expectations of government and people. “I also intend to strengthen the role of my ministry to properly coordinate the activities of the national security machinery through the direction and mandate of the National Security Council.” Reforms: - Reform the Fiji Police Force to ensure it is properly mandated; - Reform Police Act to align it to current operational requirements; - Implementation of the last job evaluation exercise; - Ensure RFMF has the necessary capabilities to support peacekeeping footprints; - Develop Blackrock project as a regional peacekeeping training centre; - Build greater professionalism and - Develop maritime surveillance and defence capabilities. Praises for Fiji sevens team after win in Australia
By: Arin Kumar TWO major stakeholders of sports in the country have sent their congratulations to the Vodafone Fiji 7s team for winning the Gold Coast 7s tournament over the weekend.Fiji defeated Samoa 3124 in the first tournament of the 2014/2015 HSBC Sevens World Series. Fiji Sports Council and the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) thanked the team for bringing joy to Fiji. Council chief executive Litiana Loabuka said she hoped the team remained consistent.“It was a fantastic win right down to the last minute and I congratulate the 7s team on their performance and we look forward to seeing consistency in the remaining legs of the IRB circuit,” she said.“As usual, there were some expectations on the boys to perform and they did deliver the results.“We wish Ben Ryan, the management team and our Fiji boys the best of luck in staying focused and in excellent condition.” Loabuka said national coach Ben Ryan was determined to help Fiji attain automatic qualification into the 2016 Olympics. “It has been said that the Road to Rio started with the Gold Coast 7s 2014 and with that said we, as a rugby loving nation are off to a good start! “We are grateful to our Government for their vision in seeing the need for international coaches to raise the expectations and bar that much higher. “It looks like Ben is focused as he keeps
reminding the team and I am sure he is setting the stage in preparation for Rio with all the prospects and development happening in sport it’s a great time to be a Fijian. This win for the country just topped off our Fiji Day celebrations!” FASANOC general secretary and chief executive Lorraine Mar echoed similar sentiments. “It was a tremendous effort by the team and coach Ben Ryan and a great start towards qualifying campaign for RIO 2016,” she said. “However the challenge is to maintain this high standing. We hope that the injection of support from FASANOC through the IOC Olympic Solidarity Team Support Grant will boost the team’s preparations.” She hopes the same support is also given to the Fijiana 7s team. “Any win by a national team is a proud moment for Fiji and a 7s win in particular always seems to lift the spirit of the people. “FASANOC urges the people to continue to support not only the men’s 7s team but also the Fijian women’s 7s team, who also have the potential to win a medal for Fiji at the Rio Olympic Games.” Source: (The Fijian Times on Line)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. Each year in Canada, October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Canadian females, affecting thousands of women and their families each year. In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it. One in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer - with the risk increasing significantly after the age of 50. One in 28 will die from the disease. Although, since the mid1990s, the incidence of cancer and death has declined, it continues to be a life-threatening issue for thousands of Canadian women. The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) continues to encourage its 340,000 members to take an active part in the fight to end this disease. An estimated 170 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die of it. Breast cancer death rates have declined by 25% since 1986. Incidence and death rates for breast cancer have declined since 1969 in women aged 20-39. Survival has been improving gradually. Today survival ranges between 87% and 89% for women aged 40 and older. For women under 40, survival is 81%, excluding Quebec. What you can do Many women are alive and well today because their breast cancer was detected and treated early. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that women: • Have a mammogram every 2 years if you are between the ages of 50 and 69. If you are between the ages of 40 and 49, discuss your risk of breast cancer and the benefits and risks of mammography with your doctor; • Have a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional at least every two years if you are between 40-69; • If you are 70 or older, talk to your doctor about a screening program for you; • Talk to your doctors about any changes. There is no single cause of breast cancer but there are certain factors that may appear to elevate the risk. These include: • Age – Risk of diagnosis increases as a person ages • Personal history – If a person has previously battled the disease • Family history – Especially if a mother, sister or daughter has encountered breast cancer • Family history of ovarian cancer • Taking hormone replacement therapy for more than five years• Dense breast tissue • Other possible risk factors – Poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and obesity Sometimes, women develop breast cancer without any of these risk factors. A lot of women affected by breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease. Even more surprising, some women have risk factors and never encounter the disease. Unfortunately, because of this uncertainty, early detection means a lot. Health professionals recommend that you see them if you find any changes with your breasts such as: • Size and shape • If you find a lump on your breast or a lump in your armpit area • Skin changes on your breast (such as peeling) • Physical changes you find in the appearance of the nipple Here are 9 ways to change your life: 1. Eat Fruit You can’t go wrong with this – almost all dietary advice comes down to the single instruction to eat more fruit and veg. Diet is thought to be a key factor in one in four cancer deaths – and animal fat in the diet is the suspect ingredient in breast cancer. The Japanese, who eat a diet of fish, rice and vegetables that is extremely low in animal fat, also have low rates of breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the blood, which encourages the growth of cancer cells. In populations with a high-fat diet, women tend to start their periods earlier and reach menopause later so they are exposed to high levels of oestrogen for longer, increasing their risk of breast cancer. Studies into what effect eating fruit and vegetables has on breast cancer have produced mixed results. One study found that, when combined
with taking exercise, the results were dramatic. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology last June, it showed that women who ate their five portions a day and walked briskly for at least 30 minutes halved their risk of breast cancer. 2. Walk It is enjoyable, simple and requires no equipment. Walking is good for all aspects of physical and mental health – and cancer is no exception. Brisk walking (or other exercise) for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, is all that’s needed. Currently only one in four women manages this. If all women did, Cancer Research UK estimates it would prevent 1,400 cases a year. Three large studies in Italy and the US showed that inactivity caused 11 per cent of cases of breast cancer. Exercise works best before the menopause, but it is effective afterwards, too. It is thought to alter oestrogen metabolism, resulting in a weaker version being made. 3. Avoid HRT Hormone replacement therapy is seen as the principal avoidable risk for breast cancer. At the height of its popularity, in 2002, an estimated two million women were taking HRT in the UK, and millions more worldwide. Tens of thousands of women will have developed breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (of the lining of the womb) as a result. Overall, women currently taking HRT are 63 per cent more likely to develop these three cancers than those who are not. Earlier hopes that these risks would be counterbalanced by a reduction in heart disease have not been borne out. Gynecologists recommend that women who wish to use it to ease the symptoms of the menopause do so for as short a time as possible. 4. Get screened Women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest possible stage have a nine in 10 chance of a successful recovery. This is the rationale for screening – to detect a tumour by mammography when it is still too small to feel. Women aged 50 to 70 are invited for screening every three years – shortly to be extended to ages 47 to 73. It is estimated that the scheme saves 1,400 lives a years in England – one life for every 500 women screened. However, there is a downside in the shape of false alarms. Screening picks up abnormalities in the breast that look like cancer but turn out not to be. Several thousand women each year suffer the anxiety and discomfort of being recalled for further tests and undergoing biopsies of the breast to check for cancer – before being given the all-clear. Screening is now more accurate, since two views of the breast are taken, reducing the chances of cancers being missed. 4. Give birth Having children, especially before the age of 30, helps protect against breast cancer. It is down to those hormones, again. Over the last century, economic progress has led to delayed childbirth and smaller families as women with their own careers have sought to balance the demands of work and home. But researchers estimate that delaying childbearing increases the risk of breast cancer by 3 per cent for each year of delay. 5. Breast-feed Breast-feeding protects against breast cancer, as well as being best for the baby. But smaller families and the rise in the number of working mothers has meant the time spent breast-feeding has reduced. Breast-feeding for six months reduces the risk, experts say. Yet many women never get that far. In England, 77 per cent of mothers start breast-feeding but more than a third switch to bottle-feeding in the first six weeks. 6. Lose weight Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer – but only after the menopause. A large European study called Epic found postmenopausal women who were obese had a 31 per cent higher risk of breast cancer than women with a
healthy weight. Reducing obesity could save 1,800 cases of breast cancer a year. Obesity increases the risk of other cancers including those of the bowel, womb, kidney and oesophagus. Overall it is estimated that 7. per cent of cancers in women and 3 per cent in men are due to being obese or overweight. In the UK, 12,000 people might avoid getting cancer each year if they maintained a healthy body weight. 7. Get a stressful job (really) A 2005 Danish study published in the British Medical Journal found high levels of daily stress reduced the risk of the disease by 40 per cent. The researchers suggest that stress may be beneficial by reducing levels of oestrogen. They draw a distinction between daily stress of the sort experienced by women in high-pressure jobs and stressful life events such as bereavement, which have previously been linked with an increase in cancer. Stress can have other damaging effects, too – on the heart, for example, and by increasing the risk of compensatory behaviour. 8. Live somewhere clean It has long been claimed that exposure to pollutants used in the manufacture of products from plastics to cosmetics has an “endocrine disrupting” effect. A report from the World Wide Fund for Nature last year claimed their role in breast cancer had been neglected. It pointed out that less than half of new breast cancer cases can be explained by genetic and lifestyle factors and chemicals in the environment could be the missing link. Other studies have contradicted this suggestion and experts point out that compared with the natural levels of oestrogen in a woman’s blood, the level of the chemicals is too small to have significant impact. Still, moving to an unpolluted region is unlikely to do harm and could encourage tother beneficial changes, such as eating healthily, exercising more, and drinking less. Don’t be nervous or anxious about finding changes in your breasts. Often these changes may not be related to cancer – but it’s worth-
while to tell your doctor as soon as possible New results from breast cancer clinical trial show non-breast cancer related causes account for most deaths. New findings from a landmark breast cancer clinical trial involving the drug letrozole show that, in this group of patients, women were more likely to die from non-breast cancer-related causes than from breast cancer-related causes. The research team found that non-breast cancer related causes accounted for 60% of deaths. The top causes of death included: cardiovascular disease including stroke (15%), other malignancies (15%), infection (6%), multiple causes (5%), and non-cardiovascular organ failure (4%). The results were particularly striking for older women. Among women aged 70 years or older, non-breast cancer-related causes accounted for 72% of deaths. The new results are published in the February 12 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The original study results were first published in The New England Journal of Medicine in October 2003 and involved 5,170 post-menopausal breast cancer survivors with a median age of 62 years (range 32 to 94 years). It determined that women who took letrozole for up to five years following 5 years of tamoxifen therapy experienced a significantly reduced risk of cancer recurrence. The clinical trial was coordinated by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials group and was funded in part by the Canadian Cancer Society. Routine use of mammography and improved treatment for breast cancer will mean that more women will survive breast cancer at older ages, at which time they might have a higher risk of death from causes other than breast cancer, says Dr Judith-Anne Chapman, lead author of the study. “The study findings show that we are successfully treating women with breast cancer. However, the study also underscores the need to pay more attention especially to older women and the potential for death from other causes,” Dr Chapman says.

Young people and social media: Docs examine pitfalls
By Pat Etheridge They’re called “Generation M2”: highly tech-savvy children ages 8 to 18, whose lives are immersed in electronic media. Now, the nation’s top pediatric organization is mobilizing efforts around their wellbeing. “As pediatricians who are trying to help children behave in ways that keep them healthy and safe, we have to pay a lot of attention to what’s happening in social media,” said Dr. David Hill, chairman-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ council on communications and media. The council led a panel called “Social Media: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” at the group’s annual conference last month in New Orleans. The goal of the presentation: getting pediatricians current on issues to discuss with young patients during regular wellness checkups. The American Academy of Pediatrics estab-
lished the council in 2007 with the recognition that growing media platforms touch on virtually every health concern pediatricians have about young people: aggression, sex, drugs, obesity, self-image and eating disorders, depression and suicide -- even learning disorders and academic achievement. “This is an uncontrolled experiment we’re running right now,” Hill said. “How does the human organism -- particularly the developing brain -- adapt to this kind of input? These are questions we are tackling.” The average teenager sends an astonishing 3,400 texts a month: more than 100 a day, according to estimates from a 2010 Neilsen survey. Many learn the hard way that once they hit “send,” there is no such thing as an “erase” button. Generation M2 youth spend close to eight hours daily in front of various electronic screens -- more time than sleeping, school or any other activity, say statistics from the
Kaiser Family Foundation. The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to monitor their children closely early on. “In early adolescence, it’s fair to say at any given moment, ‘I can look at your computer; I can look at your phone,’ “ Hill said. Recently, I had to make a tough call as a mother: I insisted that my 14-year-old daughter temporarily shut down her Facebook account. It happened just a few weeks into the new school year. A series of stressful social media interactions erupted in an exceptionally close-knit class. There were inappropriate posts, thought to be private. Not so; students suddenly were caught up in hurtful chats they would soon regret. Her school, the Atlanta International School, was proactive in its response, counseling students and offering a series of digital information sessions for parents.

“Our guidance is to apply the Golden Rule. If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, forget about sending it via text, Skype or Facebook,” said Jeff Holcomb, head of the upper school at Atlanta International. What surprised me most when I had to play “bad cop” was that my daughter seemed relieved, possibly because I told her she could blame me. “That points out one of the key tools to parenting a teenager. It’s refreshing how often teenagers will say, ‘You know what, I didn’t know how to get out of it and save face,’ “ said Hill, also the author of “Dad to Dad: Parenting Like a Pro.” “Teens actually want and need limits on their behavior. They need to know you are dedicated to keeping them safe and looking out for them.” That helps chart the course for older teenagers who inevitably balk at parental oversight. When the time comes to step back, keep open lines of communication and emphasize the positives of technology use. “Sit down and watch their favorite show; have them show you the websites they are interested in. You might be surprised at how much your teen welcomes your attention -and how much you’ll learn about what’s going on in your child’s brain by sharing some of that time,” Hill advised. The secret life of my sixth-grader Being a good digital role model is a part of being a good parent. But all too often, it is the grownups making the missteps. “If you text or check your e-mail while driving, if you bring your cell phone to the dinner table or leave the TV on in the background, you are not demonstrating the sorts of behaviors that you would want your children to display,” Hill said. Pediatricians also counsel parents to watch for teachable moments in the headlines. “I think this is a great opportunity with your teen to say, ‘Be cautious about what you put online, in an e-mail or a text. There is the possibility that it will live forever -- and be passed much farther than you had hoped,’ “ offered Hill. A growing number of college recruiters review young applicants’ Facebook pages as part of a highly selective admissions process. Otherwise well-qualified students sometimes are rejected for reckless posts on sex or substance abuse. While applicants might bristle at the prospect, university officials do not view the checks as an invasion of privacy. “If I post anything inappropriate, borderline or even just having fun, that could potentially put me in a position where I might not be admitted,” said Atlanta International high school senior Olivia Soultz, who is applying to more than a dozen colleges. “Ten years ago, you couldn’t look at a student’s Facebook page and know what they look like or how they spend their time outside of school.” “Here’s what I tell my teenage daughters about privacy,” remarked Hill: “Quoting a line from the movie ‘Princess Bride,’ ‘I don’t think that word means what you think it means.’ “ About six weeks after going digitally dark, my daughter quietly reactivated her Facebook account with newfound self-restraint. She has discovered on her own that discretion is the better part of valor. Source: CNN

Addictions and Muslim Self Esteem Youth: The HOPE Project
By Tariq Azeez, Executive Member of the HOPE Project What goes through your mind when you see the words addictions and Muslims? If you are like me a few months ago, you are going to be drawing a blank. The truth of the matter however is that our community has a very serious and growing need to address the issue of drugs, alcohol and substance abuse and how they may be harming the youth of our community. Herein lies the seed for the creation of The HOPE (Healing Opportunities through Education & Prevention) Project of Muslim Food Bank Society. We aim at identifying, educating, preventing and empowering Muslim youth struggling with addictions from substance abuse and behavioural challenges such as gambling. We treat every youth client with dignity and high confidentiality, recognizing the challenges they face today, and assisting them in overcoming these challenges by creating a safe, confidential and dignified space. Today Muslim youth come from a variety of backgrounds and an ever growing number of them are getting a fresh start as immigrants or refugees in Canada. Just in the first three months of 2013 the Immigrant Services Society of BC helped place 91 refugees, mostly within the Lower Mainland communities of Surrey, Burnaby and Coquitlam. Faced with acclimatizing to a new and foreign society and sometimes unable to speak the language parents unfortunately lose touch with how their children are faring in their new home. The youths for their part are faced with many choices both in our Islamic and public schools, forcing to find their place in society as youths. This can bring about alienation, shame, frustration and depression, the very seeds out of which spring most addictions, and without any sort of support system in place the only direction they can go is down. And nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in
the Canadian prison system where Muslims inmates are largely growing. Further compounding this problem is the stigma associated with substance abuse as a member of the Muslim community. We see and we do not speak, we hear and we do not act. We are trained ill-advisedly to minimize rather than empathize, and judge without having the right to do so. As members of the Muslim community it is our responsibility to help our brothers and sisters overcome these challenges in a safe environment. Through the HOPE Project we aim to train caseworkers to identify the scope of the problem whether it be drugs, alcohol, gambling or substance abuse and connect the client with support services in the community from counsellors to rehab and other resources available. We ensure dignity, confidentiality and respect for our clients If you or someone you know is passionate about helping others, has experience working with individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and are looking to build their experience in the Non-profit sector—community organizations & youth services—you are welcome to apply. We need you so that we can shine a spotlight on these issues within our community and do our best to identify, educate and prevent and support our youths. Interested in the HOPE Project and want to help Muslim youths? Send your resume at hope@muslimfoodbank.com. Please visit our Facebook page at page https://www.facebook.com/Healingforaddicts
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Have you wondered about what selfesteem is and how to get more of it? Do you think your self-esteem is low? Do you know how to tell? Do you know what to do about it? Self-esteem answers the question, “How do I feel about who I am?” We learn self-esteem in our family of origin; we do not inherit it. Global self-esteem (about “who we are”) is normally constant. Situational self-esteem (about what we do) fluctuates, depending on circumstances, roles, and events. Situational self-esteem can be high at one moment (e.g., at work) and low the next (e.g., at home). Low self-esteem is a negative evaluation of oneself. This type of evaluation usually occurs when some circumstance we encounter in our life touches on our sensitivities. We personalize the incident and experience physical, emotional, and cognitive arousal. This is so alarming and confusing that we respond by acting in a self-defeating or self-destructive manner. When that happens, our actions tend to be automatic and impulse-driven; we feel upset or emotionally blocked; our thinking narrows; our self-care deteriorates; we lose our sense of self; we focus on being in control and become self-absorbed. Global self-esteem is not set in stone. Raising it is possible, but not easy. Global self-esteem grows as we face our fears and learn from our experiences. Some of this work may require the aid of a psychotherapist. In the meantime, here is what you can do: •Practice self-care. Make new lifestyle choices by joining self-help groups and practicing positive health care. •Identify triggers to low self-esteem. We personalize stressful events (e.g., criticism) by inferring a negative meaning
about o u r selves. A selfdefeati n g action often f o l lows. Each event can, instead, be a chance to learn aboutt ourselves, if we face our fear of doing so and the negative beliefs about ourselves that sustain the negative meanings. •Slow down personalizing. Target personalizing to slow impulsive responses. You can begin to interfere with these automatic overreactions by using relaxation and stress management techniques. These techniques are directed at selfsoothing the arousal. This allows us to interrupt the otherwise inevitable automatic reaction and put into play a way to begin to face the unacknowledged fears at the root of low self-esteem. •Stop and take notice. Pay attention to the familiarity of the impulse. Our tendency is to overreact in the same way to the same incident. Awareness of the similarity can be the cue to slow our reactivity. •Acknowledge reaction. Verbalize, “Here I go again (describe action, feeling, thought) . . . ” Actively do something with the awareness rather than passively note it. The result is to slow the impulse and give ourselves a choice about how we want to respond. •Choose response. Hold self-defeating impulses. Act in a self-caring and effective way. By choosing to act in a more functional way, we take a step toward d facing our fears. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

WOMEN
Womanhood, meekness, and Taqwa
By Haqqseeker Featured,Islam | Posted by: MV Media Prophet Mohammad (pbuh)said: “Hayā is a branch of Imān.” Hayā (modesty/meekness/shyness) is an integral attribute of Imān. The healthier the Imān, the greater will be the quality of Hayā in the Mu’min. While the attribute of Hayā is common to both Muslim males and females - or should be common - it is most profound in Muslim women of Taqwā. The quality of meekness is such a lofty virtue of the Muslim woman that Allāh Ta’ala highlights it in the Qur’ān. Describing the noble and beautiful demeanour of the daughter of Shuayb (‘alayhis Salām), the Qur’ān Majeed states: “Then one of the two (daughters of Shuayb(A.S)came to him Musa(A.S) walking bashfully. She said: “Verily, my father calls you”(Surah: Al-Qasas, 25). Shuayb (A.S) who had no son sent one of his daughters to call Musa (A.S)who at the time was a wayfarer without home. She came walking very bashfully, and with lowered head from a respectable distance, delivered her father’s message. Hadhrat Musa (A.S) whose Hayā was profound, requested her to walk behind him at a distance. He told her to take a few pebbles. When he had to turn to the right on the way to the home of Shuayb (A.S) of which he was unaware, she was to throw a pebble towards the right, and the same if he had to turn left from the pathway. His Hayā and Purdāh dictated that she should not direct him with her voice. This was the lofty degree of Hayā and Hijāb. Thus, the Qur’ān Majeed makes special mention of the daughter’s Hayā, describing her walk with the term isthyā’ which means ‘bashfully’. She was an embodiment of pure bashfulness and modesty. Once Prophet (pbuh) asked Hzt‘Ali (r.a): “What is best for a woman?” Hzt‘Ali (radh-
was unable to answer. He said that he would ask his wife, Bibi Fatimāh (r.a). He went home and when he questioned Fatimāh (r.a), she responded: “The best for a woman is that no man should see her, and she should see no man.” When ‘Ali (r.a) reported this wonderful response to Prophet (pbuh)His face became radiant with pleasure and he delightfully exclaimed: “Fatimāh is a part of me.” The Hayā of Fatimāh (r.a) was so lofty and so wonderful and so profound that her last wish became the Sunnāh for all Muslim women until the Day of Qiyāmah. She instructed that on her death, despite the female’s body being draped with six shrouds, a purdāh (barrier) be put up over her body to ensure that no male even accidentally casts a gaze on her wrapped up body. Furthermore, she instructed that she be buried in the darkness of the night. This was an added measure of purdāh dictated by her Hayā. Six shrouds covering the dead body, but still she ordered the erection of a barrier to conceal even her dead, covered body. This Sunnāh remains to this day when females are buried and will remain until the Day of Qiyāma, inshaAllāh. While this practice prevails today at the time of the death of a Muslim woman, the story is totally different when she is alive. Today’s ‘Muslim’ women who have been educated in western educational institutions, having jettisoned almost every vestige of their Imāni Hayā, surpass even non-Muslim women in the display of audacity and immodesty. The reason for their vile state of meeknesslessness from the Islamic perspective is that all moral attributes have opposites. When one is displaced, there is never a vacuum. The opposite sets in. When Hayā is eliminated, then immodesty and immorality overwhelm the one who at one stage was a repository of meekness and modesty.
Today a Muslim woman’s hijāb and niqāb are being reduced to shreds, thanks to the WhatsApp, Facebook and other social networks. Daughters, sisters, wives and even mothers of some of us have started uninhibitedly interacting and chatting with ghair-mahrams, are freely watching their (ghair-mahrams’) pictures and posting their own so that the ghairmahrams of the world can feast upon them. To look at a woman with lust constitutes the zinnāh of the eyes. What about the Muslim women who candidly post their pictures (and those of their kin and friends) in the social networks? Don’t they become accomplices in the sin committed by those watching these pictures? Islam has made hijāb a symbol of honour and dignity for women. Hijāb has been ordained by Allāh, and not by some individuals, as a number of Muslims with warped viewpoints about Islam would have us believe. One such Muslim writer has this to say in an article about hijāb: “To wear the hijāb is certainly NOT an Islamic obligatory on women. It is an innovation (Bid’ah) of men suffering from a piety complex who are so weak spiritually that they just cannot trust themselves!” This statement clearly points to one undeniable fact: the writer’s ignorance about what Allāh demands from the believing women as far as her Hayā is concerned. Such writers have views similar to those of their none-Muslim counterparts from the West who say hijāb subjugates and oppresses women. However, what they say is in stark contrast to the reality. A hijāb/niqāb/chādar accords our mothers, sisters, daughters and wives the respect and the dignity they deserve. What respect, dignity, and human right does the west offer women by allowing them to be openly flaunted in front of any stranger? Islam protects them from evil eyes and de-
signs of men with sinister motives and grants them an elevated rank, dignity and such honour that no one has ever granted them in the entire human history. Allāh Ta’ala states in the Qur’ān: “.And the women should not strike their feet (I.e. walk in such a way) so that attention is drawn to their hidden beauty.” (Surah an-Nur Ayat 31). I.e. they should not strike their feet in such a way that their anklets and other ornaments of beauty become manifest before men. Hence when a woman has been prevented from striking her feet (walking in such a way which would attract the attention of the ghair-mahram men towards her hidden beauty), then what can be said about their moving around in the streets, in the market places and the social halls with their faces uncovered or without a hijab? This clearly indicates that Allah desires women to be in hijāb/niqāb/chādar to avoid the lustful gazes of ghair-mahram men. Allāh Ta’ala has created woman for the home role, not for the public stage. She moves in conflict and unnaturally when she takes to the public stage and the streets to rub shoulders with men and to compete with them in worldly and secular matters. Hayā is of primary importance in preserving the moral fibre of any society. That is why Hayā has been called the fortification of a woman. It protects her from many sins and prevents ill-intentioned men from daring to have evil thoughts about her. May Allāh guide our sisters to emulate the pristine qualities of our Sahābiyat, Āmeen

AICP Islamic Center Celebrates Eid ul Adha
We start in the Name of Allah, The MostMerciful and Forgiving. We praise Allah and thank Him for the blessing of Islam. And we humbly ask Allah to shower His peace and blessings on our noble and humble Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects – BC realizes that the day of ^Id is a great and glorious occasion of happiness and joy. As Muslims, joy and happiness in this world is felt when we apply all efforts to obey Allah and perform good deeds that gain reward and success in the Hereafter. Ayah 58 of Surat Yunus means: “Say let them rejoice in the bounty of Allah and His Mercy; it is better than what they collect and gather”. For that reason and to show and share with the Muslim children the joy of the obedience of Hajj, The AICP –BC held Eid celebration in its center in New Westminster on Saturday October 4, A large number of children accompanied by their parents came and shared an evening of meaningful joy and a superb performance by the women chants group. The Youth Department –represented by the Muslim Youth
of BC MYbcarranged a wide variety of challenging games for the children from the age of 3 to 10. The celebration was decorated with dhikr (mentioning Allah), praising Allah, praising the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam in heart moving chants asking for mercy and forgiveness from Allah. Winner or not all of the children received rewards and Eid sweets to top a beautiful evening with sweets. It was another successful function for the MYbc Youth to arrange. The children left with a smile as well as the parents’ content for seeing their children being involved
in meaningful activities like this. And the AICP-BC succeeded once again in reviving Muslim occasions in an obedient fashion and in a meaningful rewarded way. May Allah shower the Muslim community with peace and prosperity and may Allah protect the AICP and keep it a leader in commemorating Islamic Occasions.

This rally was against the General Election 2013 rigging in Pakistan and the actions oc current Punjab and Federal Government of Pakistan Police , who killed number of innocent people in Model Town Lahore and in Islamabad during PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Rallies. The protest against Nawaz Sharif Government has continued outside the Parliament building in Islamabad since August 14, 2014 by PTI Chairman Mr. Imran Khan and Allama Tahir ul Qadri (PAT) parties, where they are vowing not to return to their homes until they achieve their objectives including resignation of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif resignation, inquiry into the results of General elections 2013 at different polling stations and an overall reform the current corrupt electoral system. The Holland park crowd voiced their feelings against the current corrupt democratic system and their supporters in Parliament. The protesters favoured
for a new Pakistan, where fair justice system should be priority and it would be a corruption free state. A very colourful environment was created by cheerful crowd. Most of the families were in PTI Flag dresses. They raised the PTI flags, slogans and “Go Nawaz Go Banners” in English and Urdu languages. Mr. Ghulam Murtaza did the master of ceremony and DJ Butt’ s responsibility of this Rally was done by Mr. Hamza Malik with a cricket Bat. Many community members of all age groups shared their thoughts and demanded Nawaz Sharif resignation in their speeches including Mr. Khurram Rai, Mr. Shamim Akbar, Mr, Rai Afzal, Mr. Farrukh Alam, Ms. Fareen , Dr. Babra Rana, Mr. Sajid Hameed, Mr. Raza Mirani, Mr. Ali Randhawa, Mr. Rehan Awan, few kids and other special senior guests who recently came from Pakistan. PAT claims 300,000 people attended Faisalabad rally
Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) has shown its power in Multan and huge number of crowds witnessed today and the PAT chief declared today victory day in Faisalabad. The various figures are being given regarding presence of crowd in the PAT show of power in Faisalabad. The PAT has claimed that as many as 300,000 people were attendant today congregation. Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri has asked people to give him ‘support, [currency] notes and votes’ so that he could “change their destiny and bring a revolution of prosperity at their doorstep”. “Neither I have money and nor my associates are billionaires, looters or plunderers. I need your support with all resources for bringing a genuine revolution and a qualitative change in the lives of the oppressed,” he said, addressing a mammoth rally in the historical Dhobi Ghaat ground Sunday night. Criticising the government, Qadri said the country was mired
in heavy foreign loans and the resources were being spent for payment of their interest – a situation in which no resources were left for ordinary citizens. “Additionally, the rulers have also borrowed trillions of rupees from local banks and are paying heavy interest on such loans. These rulers cannot pull the national economy out of such morass.” Dr Tahirul Qadri said he was committed to ending the system of injustice in Pakistan and no one could stop him. “The revolution march has entered the decisive phase and my struggle to change the system is now heading towards victory,” he claimed. He also announced that after coming to powers, he would create new provinces for resolving people’s problems at their doorsteps. Other leaders of the allied parties, including Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen and Sunni Ittehad Council, also spoke at the gathering. Source The Express Tribune,

25 S P O R T S FIFA has to change its culture - ethics investigator Michael Garcia Dhu al Hija 22, 1435 October 17, 2014
FIFA’s chief independent ethics investigator has called for a “change of culture” at the organisation. In a thinly veiled attack on president Sepp Blatter’s leadership, Michael Garcia reiterated the need for “greater transparency”. Talking about the current investigation process, Garcia said: “That’s a kind of system which might be appropriate for an intelligence agency but not for an ethics compliance process in an international sports institution that serves the public and is the subject of intense public scrutiny.” American lawyer Garcia concluded his lengthy investigation into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process last month and handed his report to FIFA’s ethics adjudicator Hans Joachim Eckert, but he is disappointed by the world governing body’s insistence on keeping his report confidential. In a keynote speech at an event
organised by the American Bar Association in London, Garcia added: “The natural next step of the development of an effective ethics process at FIFA is greater transparency. “The second element that is vital to fulfilling the promise of this reform process is tone at the top. “More simply put, the second element an institution like FIFA needs in order to meet the challenge of ethics enforcement is leadership. An ethics committee - even a serious, independent ethics committee backed by a strong code of ethics - is not a silver bullet. “What is required is leadership that sends a message that the rules apply to everyone; leadership that wants to understand and learn from any mistakes or mis-steps the ethics committee may have identified; leadership that makes it clear to everyone - this is what we’ve set up the ethics committee to do, this is why they do
it, and this is what they’ve done. Garcia’s views on publishing the report have been supported by a number of FIFA executives, including Uefa president Michel Platini and Britain’s representative Jim Boyce. But FIFA president Blatter insists the contents of the report must remain confidential, and that no member of his executive committee made a specific request when the issue was raised in a meeting earlier this month. Garcia said other sports organisations have already demonstrated the value of transparency, highlighting the publication of a report into allegations concerning the 2002 Winter Olympics being awarded to Salt Lake City, which allowed the International Olympic Committee to “move forward”. Garcia said the aim of transparency is not “to embarrass certain individuals” or “harm the organization”, but rather the opposite. “It’s one thing
to tell people that a rigorous process is in place. It’s another thing to show them how that process works and what it has uncovered,” he explained. “FIFA built the system that should inspire confidence that things have changed for the better. Showing that to the public serves FIFA’s best interest.” Source: BBC Sports
‘I’m not Misbah, Misbah is not me’ - Afridi Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s T20 captain, has said that his style of leadership was extremely different from Misbah-ul-Haq. Afridi was speaking to ESPNcricinfo before the limited-overs series against Australia, during which he stood in for Misbah in the
third ODI, a match Pakistan lost by one run. “I know being aggressive sometime costs you game but captain is the one who sets an example,” Afridi said. “But I strongly believe result and performance is something that comes later as the first thing is the effort and fight. “No one can predict that a player will take five wickets or score a 50. So what we can ensure is the fight regardless of the result at the end of the day.” Afridi had led Pakistan between August 2009 and the World Cup in 2011 before regaining the T20 captaincy ahead of the current series. With Misbah saying that it’s not given that he would lead the side in the World Cup, some uncertainty has cropped up around the position. Afridi’s aggressive style of leadership offers a contrasting option to Misbah’s methods. However, Afridi added that he did not expect everyone to follow
his approach and an individual should stick to the style suited to him. “Every captain has his own approach and I can’t be Misbah and Misbah can’t be Afridi,” he said. “If he is comfortable with his approach then what is the problem? But players around him should not become Misbah. Each player has his own strengths and he should carry out what he is capable of rather than suppressing himself.” Afridi also said he had learnt his lessons from the previous term and he was an improved man since then. “Earlier, the time and the atmosphere was different after the spot-fixing,” he said. “It was tough to gel the dressing room but I treated every player accordingly; younger were given affection and some needed to be given fear of the stick. You know our nation runs on the strength of a stick.” “But captaincy in Pakistan is a challenge. I was aggressive even
off the field. It haunted my earlier stint. I have learnt the lesson though; things should be operated amicably. But my mindset in the field is the same as a leader is the one who should decide the playing XI, he is the one who has to get his boys to fight on the ground. He knows what he wants and he is the one who has to face everything after the match. Whoever is the captain, he should be given ample authority to pick his best players.” Afridi’s batting has been a talking point since his debut. He has won a number of matches with the bat but his average in the ODIs is 23.22 and 18.88 in T20s. Afridi, though, insisted that over the last few years, he considers himself a bowler first. “I have always insisted over the last three years that bowling is my strength and batting comes second, and it’s a plus if it works,” he said.
