New Democrat Leader Thomas Mulcair said he would not label killing of a solider at the National War Memorial and the attack on Parliament Hill by gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau as a terrorist act. “I don’t think that we have enough evidence to use that word,” Mulcair told reporters Wednesday after emerging from the NDP caucus meeting held in the same room where MPs had cowered below tables while hearing gunfire outside a week earlier. Eight soldiers, 21 suspected militants killed in Khyber operation
At least 21 suspected terrorists were killed while several others injured during a major clearance operation in Spin Qamar area of Khyber Agency, Pakistan military claimed on Wednesday.“Eight soldiers embraced shahdat (martyrdom) during fierce fighting and exchange of fire with terrorists,” said a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). This is second phase of Khyber operation named as Khyber-II. In a separate incident, two members of a peace committee have been injured in Gomal Zam area. One of them is stated to be in critical condition.
The information, however, could not be verified independently as access for journalists is restricted in the area. Earlier in the day, DG ISPR Maj Gen Asim Bajwa told reporters that more than 1,100 terrorists were killed during Zarb-i-Azb and 44 others during Khyber-I operation. However, he once again declined to give a timeframe for the end of the operations underway in North Waziristan and Khyber, saying these would continue in the two tribal regions until the areas were cleared. Khyber is among Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous tribal districts near the Afghan border, rife with homegrown insurgents and foreign militants. These are also home to religious extremist organisations including Al Qaeda. The plains of Bara hold strategic significance for militant groups as they connect the agency to the outskirts of Peshawar. The area was being used by militants to put pressure on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital. In recent weeks, police and military posts in and around Peshawar have come under attack. The key area also straddles the Nato supply line into Afghanistan. Khyber also links several agencies to each other, serving as a north-south route within the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). The region has been long fought over by a mix of militant organisations, including the Tehreeki-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Ansarul Islam and Mangal Bagh’s Lashkar-i-Islam.
Malala Yousafzai, the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is to donate $50,000 (39,000 euros) to help rebuild United Nations schools in Gaza, the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency said Wednesday. The 17-year-old Pakistani children’s rights activist won the World Children’s Prize in Stockholm on Tuesday, and said she would donate all of that prize money to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA said in a statement. “Innocent Palestinian children have suffered terribly and for too long,” UNRWA quoted Malala as saying. “We must all work to ensure Palestinian boys and girls, and all children everywhere, receive a quality education in a safe environment.”Several UNRWA schools were damaged during the 50-day conflict in July and August between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, and nearly 2,200 Palestinians were killed, almost a quarter of them children. On the Israeli side, 73 people were killed, including one child. UNRWA’s director Pierre Krahenbuhl said he was “deeply touched” by Malala’s decision to donate
her prize money to the agency. “Recognition by you, a Nobel laureate... will lift the spirits of a quarter of a million UNRWA students in Gaza and boost the morale of our more than 9,000 teaching staff there,” he said. Malala, who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize earlier in October, alongside India’s 60-year-old Kailash Satyarthi for their championing of children’s rights. Earlier this month, Malala also received the US Liberty Medal and pledged her $100,000 award to education in her homeland Pakistan. Source: AFP

Pakistan’s coastal areas brace for Cyclone Nilofar
Cyclone Nilofar — which is expected to slam into India and Pakistan within the next 36 hours — reached within a distance of 910 kilometres south from the coast of Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. Officials also say that Nilofar, classified as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’, may weaken to a ‘cyclonic storm’ when it makes landfall. Pakistan’s chief meteorologist Tauseef Alam, however, said: “But strong gusty winds andmodest to heavy rains with thunderstorm are expected.” According to Met office, the sea conditions along Pakistan coast would be rough to very rough from Wednesday to Friday. Fishermen in Sindh and Balochistan have been advised not to venture in open sea from Wednesday to Friday while those who were already in the open sea were advised to return to coastal areas. Fishing boats seen moored on harbour after issuing a warning by Meteorology Department and imposing ban on fishing due to a tropical cyclone named Nilofar. The National Disaster Management
Authority (NDMA) has warned local agencies to take precautionary measures ahead of the cyclone. “We have instructed our provincial chapter to warn fishermen that they should refrain from fishing in the sea in the upcoming days,” NDMA spokesman Ahmed Kamal told AFP. The Director General of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan, Noor Mohammad Jogezai, claimed that necessary arrangements have been made to tackle any emergency-like situation in Makran division. “Our relief goods are already kept in stores in Makran division and we are ready to deal with any emergency-like situation caused by heavy rains,” he said. Meanwhile, the Karachi and provincial administrations claimed to have prepared a contingency plan to handle the post-cyclone situation. The Sindh government has declared an emergency in districts facing the threat of cyclone while the Karachi municipal administration has claimed to have made arrangements to evacuate people from Mubarak village and Ibrahim Hyderi — fishermen’s neighbourhoods along the city’s coastline. DG PDMA Sindh Syed Salman Shah said around 300,000 people are estimated to be affected in case of the cyclone impact at the coastal belt. He added that Section 144 has been imposed in Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal and Badin and all the concerned departments have been put on high alert. A state of emergency has also been declared at all the hospitals in the districts along the coastal belt and the leaves of staff have been cancelled, Shah said, adding that measures have been discussed for
immediate shifting of fishermen from coastal areas to safer places in case of an emergency. He further said that it has been decided that dwellers of coastal areas will be accommodated in government buildings instead of camps to protect them against rains and gusty winds and added that the affected people will be provided all necessary facilities. commissioner also directed Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, District Municipal bodies and other concerned departments to ensure strict implementation of Section 144 of the CrPC which bans bathing and swimming in sea. He further asked the citizens to avoid going and taking their families to sea beaches till the danger of the storm subsided and said, “Section 144 will remain imposed on beaches till Nov 2 and no one will be allowed to go to seashores.” All the deputy commissioners and district administrations have been asked to evacuate the people of communities residing at the vulnerable places and to shift them at safer places. A local fisherman in Karachi’s Mubarak Village, however, told Dawn that no government representative had visited the village for evacuation or any other arrangements. He added that the residents of the fishing village, anticipating the storm, had shifted their boats and small vessels to a relatively safer place on a self-help basis. Source: By Agencies

UN Ebola effort faces Further glitches plague ‘information challenge’ TransLink’s $194-million Compass card system
Authorities are having trouble figuring out how many more people are getting Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone and where the hotspots are in those countries, according to the UN’s top Ebola official in West Africa. This is harming efforts to get control of the outbreak, Anthony Banbury said on Tuesday. Over the past week, the US said, Banbury met the presidents of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, where Ebola has infected at least 10,000 people and killed roughly half of them, as he focuses on adapting an operational framework for international anti-Ebola efforts. “The challenge is good information, because information helps tell us where the disease is, how it’s spreading and where we need to target our resources,” Banbury told the Associated Press by phone from the Ghanaian capital of Accra, where the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, or UNMEER, is based. Health experts say the key to stopping Ebola is breaking the chain of transmission by tracing and isolating those who have had contact with Ebola patients or victims. Health-care workers cannot do that if they do not know where new cases are emerging. “And unfortunately, we don’t have good data from a lot of areas. We don’t know exactly what is happening,” Banbury, the UNMEER chief, said. He said he is hoping for a new approach in Liberia as the UN and its partners work to improve the capacity of communities to safely bury victims. Separately, the president of the World Bank said Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia need at least 5,000 more health workers to effectively fight the epidemic. Jim Yong Kim said on Tuesday that he is worried about where those health workers can be found given the widespread fear of Ebola. Quarantining health workers returning to their home countries could also hurt recruitment efforts. Jim spoke alongside Ban Ki-moon, UN secretary-general, and Nkosazana DlaminiZuma, African Union (AU) chairperson, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the AU is headquartered. Although Western governments and aid groups have stepped up Ebola aid in
recent months, the UN says more support is needed. The UN’s target is to have 70 percent of Ebola cases getting access to a treatment centre and to achieve a similar percentage for safe Ebola burials. Ban said the transmission of the virus continues to outpace the international community’s response. He appealed to the AU’s 54 member states not to impose Ebola-related travel restrictions or close their borders. Some already have. Dlamini-Zuma said AU states had pledged to send more than 2,000 health workers to West Africa. In the US, a nurse who fuelled Ebola fears by flying to Cleveland after being infected by her dying patient in Dallas was released on Tuesday from a hospital isolation unit, where doctors defended her as a courageous and passionate front-line caregiver. Another nurse, held for days against her will in a medical tent in New Jersey after volunteering in West Africa, was in an undisclosed location in Maine, objecting to quarantine rules as overly restrictive. Lawyers now represent both Amber Vinson, who contracted the virus while caring for a Liberian visitor to Texas, and Kaci Hickox, who is challenging the mandatory quarantines that some states have imposed on anyone who came into contact with Ebola victims. In another Ebola-related development, in Geneva, the Swiss agency that regulates new drugs said on Tuesday it has approved an application for a clinical trial with an experimental Ebola vaccine at the Lausanne University Hospital. Swissmedic said the trial will be conducted among 120 volunteer participants with support from the UN World Health Organisation. The experimental vaccine is to be initially administered on healthy volunteers who will be sent as medical staff to fight the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. In a statement, the Bern-based Swiss government agency said the trial continues a series that began in the US, Britain and Mali, using a vaccine based on a genetically modified chimpanzee adenovirus. Canada ranks poorly in health outcomes in global gender equality report
The World Economic Forum has issued its ninth annual Global Gender Gap Report, a study that measures 142 countries for gender equality across four pillars: economy, politics, health, and education. The United States improved its ranking to 20 after narrowing its wage gap and improving the number of women in government and ministerial positions, the report said. Canada is ranked 19th, up from 20th last year and 21st the year before. While Canada is among several countries to rank first in educational attainment, where there is almost no gender gap at all, it ranks 17th in economic participation and opportunity, and 42nd in political empowerment. Perhaps most shockingly, Canada ranks 100 out of 142 countries in the category of health outcomes and survival. Dragging down its ranking in the health category is a rank of 94 in the birth ratio category, which measures the ratio of boy versus girl births. Canada also ranked 111th in the life expectancy of women compared to men. Indeed, the gender gaps are worsening in the health and educational attainment categories in some parts of the world. About 30 per cent of countries have wider education gaps than they did nine years ago, while 40 per cent of countries have wider health and survival gaps than nine years ago, the report said. The report notes that healthy and educated women are more likely to have healthier and more educated children, “creating a virtuous cycle
for any community or country.” And when the number of women involved in political decision-making “reaches a critical mass, their decisions – which take into account the needs of a wider segment of society – lead to more inclusive results,” the report says. “Achieving gender equality is obviously necessary for economic reasons,” Klaus Schwab, the World Economic Forum’s founder and executive chairman, said in a statement. “Only those economies who have full access to all their talent will remain competitive and will prosper. But even more important, gender equality is a matter of justice. As a humanity, we also have the obligation to ensure a balanced set of values.” Meanwhile, worldwide, much of the progress in gender equality over the past decade has come from more women entering the workforce, particularly politics, according to the report. However, the gender gap in political empowerment remains widest of four categories studied. The gender gap is narrowest in the category of health outcomes and survival at 96 per cent globally, with some 35 countries having no gap at all. The gender gap in educational attainment is at 94 per cent globally, with 25 countries having no gap at all. However, the global gender gap for economic participation and opportunity “lags stubbornly behind” at 60 per cent, up from 56 per cent in 2006, the study says.
TransLink says it has no idea when it will issue Compass cards to the public, saying it wants to ensure it rolls out a “quality” system and is still wrestling with glitches on its website and card-readers on buses. The transportation authority has been beset by delays and cost overruns to the Compass card program, which is already a year behind schedule. TransLink is now seeking Metro Vancouver’s approval for another $5.5 million from the federal Gas Tax Fund “for the installation of Compass card readers on buses,” according to a report submitted to the Metro Vancouver board. Mike Madill, TransLink’s vice-president of enterprise initiatives, insists the $5.5 million will not increase the cost of the program, which has already jumped from $171.3 million to $194 million, but will reduce TransLink’s share of the overall costs. He noted the transportation authority is focused on providing a “quality” service and will continue to roll out the smart card project in phases to ensure it gets it right. One of the problems plaguing TransLink has been getting a faster transaction speed on the buses. The smart card is expected to tap in at half a second but is often much slower. The electronic fare cards will allow riders to load monthly passes, single fares or a prepaid balance that will be detected as they pass through the fare gates that are being installed across the SkyTrain system. Only 85,000 cards have been issued so far, mainly to TransLink employees and those in the BC Bus Pass Program, which serves the disabled and low-income seniors. Plans to roll out the card to West Coast Express passengers — the next group slated to receive them — have been postponed since last November. Madill said a “readiness review” is expected within the next month to determine when the cards will go out to West Coast Express passengers, but the hope is it will happen this summer. After that, the project will be rolled out to a few U-Pass students, in a test case, before the cards are issued to all students and, eventu-
ally, to the public in stages. Madill isn’t sure when that will happen, but said passengers will be given fair warning before the system starts. FareSaver tickets will continue to be sold, and will likely overlap, with the cards in the beginning, he said. About 800,000 cards are expected to be issued. TransLink warned that an “incomplete implementation of the bus component of the project will adversely affect the service quality (integration and seamless customer experience) and fare revenue generation potential.” But some Metro Vancouver directors, particularly in Burnaby, argued the regional district should not be paying for cost overruns associated with a provincial project that was pushed through without Metro’s approval. Madill said no operational costs will be paid to Cubic Transportation Systems, which designed and built the system, until the project is running smoothly. Meanwhile, Madill maintains the delays are not associated with problems faced by Cubic in other jurisdictions, such as Chicago, where passengers have complained of faulty readers or of being overcharged. The Metro Vancouver system is different than Chicago’s, he said, mainly because the card readers do not accept credit cards. He noted London, which also has a Cubic designed system, has launched a campaign to urge customers to take their electronic transit cards — called the Oyster — out of their wallets when tapping into a transit reader. The Compass card system will allow passengers to prepay fares for the day or the entire month in advance, which remains “stored value” on an electronic swipe card until the card is used. Fares are calculated and deducted when the card is scanned upon entering and leaving the transit system. Those caught riding without a valid ticket face a $173 fine, which TransLink can enforce by preventing drivers with unpaid tickets from renewing their driver’s licences or vehicle registration with ICBC. reports that Zehaf-Bibeau had been struggling with mental illness, for which he had tried to seek help. “If that turns out to be the case, I think we are not in the presence of a terrorist act in the sense that we would understand it and I think we have to be very careful with the use of the word terrorism, make sure that’s actually what we are dealing with,” Mulcair said. The Conservative government, the RCMP and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have all described the attack as terrorism. On Sunday, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said Zehaf-Bibeau had recorded a videoof himself just before carrying out his attack on Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Parliament Hill, which he said was “persuasive evidence” he had been “driven by ideological and political motives”. When asked by a reporter whether the Conservatives were “irresponsible” in using the word terrorism, Mulcair said no, they just had a different point of vie. “They’ve used the word from the get-go. It was the word that they used immediately before any of this other information was out there and frankly the infor-
mation that is now available to the public comforts me in my choice not to use the word terrorism in describing the act that took place here,” Mulcair said. “It doesn’t take away from the horror of what took place. It doesn’t make it any less criminal, but I think there is a distinction to be used and when you look at the background of the individual and what was actually going on, that the use of that word was not the appropriate one. That’s our point of view. That’s my point of view,” Mulcair said. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau expressed confidence in the choice the RCMP made to use that word. “I said several times last week that I would wait for the appropriate authorities to make a determination on what happened before using that word. The RCMP said it was terrorism, so it was,” Trudeau told reporters after the Liberal caucus meeting Wednesday. Finance Minister Joe Oliver also said he disagreed with Mulcair. “I think it was a terrorist act,” Oliver said after the Conservative caucus meeting Wednesday morning. Source: Toronto Star

Defuse Extremists’ Mindset, a Better Option
On O O October t b 23 23rd, d a wave off grief i f swept across the country after Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down while he was guarding at the National War Memorial near Parliament Hill. The gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau made his way to centre block but was shot dead by the Parliament Hill security personnel. At the time, parliament was in session, all parliamentarians panicked and the prime minister hid himself in a closet. Sadly, this was a second deadly attack against a Canadian soldier just in three days. On the previous Monday Martin Rouleau ran down two soldiers in Quebec with his car. Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53, died of his injuries. Rouleau was also shot dead by police. With regard to Ottawa shootings, no Islamic State link was found. And, there is no evidence so far about the links to Middle Eastern Islamist extremists, the government has said. Courtesy BBC NEWS Our Deep condolences are for the families of slain soldiers, friends and colleagues of Cpl. Cirillo; we pray for the faster recovery of the injured ones. Obviously, there is a lapse in Canadian security system that led to failure in Quebec and Ottawa. Most probably, the insufficient security or the ongoing security related flaws need an urgent attention. Even the military base entry points must be guarded effectively by arming the security personnel for obvious reasons. Otherwise, without enough precautions we are merely sitting ducks.
Subsequently, S b tl Prime Pi Minister Mi i t Harper issued a statement, so did Mr. Justine Trudeau. Only a few lines out of Justin Trudeau remarks are reproduced as follows: “We have remained Canadians and this is how we will carry on. We will get answers to how and why this happened. They will be vital in preventing any future attack. And to our friends and fellow citizens in the Muslim community, Canadians know acts such as these, committed in the name of Islam, are an aberration of your faith. Continued, mutual cooperation and respect will help prevent the influence of distorted ideological propaganda posing as religion. We will walk forward together, not apart.” Beyond doubt, both the quality and tone of Justin’s remarks are impressive and praiseworthy. He seems to be having the capability of capturing the feelings of a nation and giving expression to it. Jumping conclusions: Amid the ongoing Islamophobia/ Islam bashing, some groups/individuals loved the incidence as they were anxious for blaming the Muslims and the religion of Islam. The evidence shows the drug addict gunman was having trouble with the law and parents; he suffered from social/psychological issues as he was involved in robberies and other criminal activity. He insisted to be jailed. As a recent convert to Islam, he maintained his stand of finding some rehabilitation religiously. Aasim Rashid, spokesman for the B.C. Muslim Association, said not
Letters & Opinions The Power of One By: Mahmood Awan, Richmond Despite being possibly one of our greatest civic duties, voting is the least exercised. Many do not feel their voice is heard when they cast their vote, but they do not realize that their presence at the ballot box does make a difference in the smallest ways. The upcoming November 15th civic election is just the beginning of many that will affect how you live your life. The policies from the politicians we elect will shape our communities and, in turn, shape our lives. The right to vote must not be taken for granted as the price that people have paid for achieving democracy in Canada has been extremely high. Voting is your greatest civic duty so use it as a tool to enact change. Voting is about taking responsibility and serving your country. Why would you want someone else deciding what’s best for you? Respect your right to vote because it’s a privilege that many people in the world don’t have. People in other countries where democracy is non-existent are putting their lives on the line to be able to live in a true democratic country and vote for their leaders without having rigged elections. Citizens in many countries around the world are organizing mass demonstrations against corrupt governments demanding representation by the people. For these people, voting is a luxury which may only be achieved after much violence and force. In Canada, we are blessed with peace and security, state of the art medical and educational facilities,

(CBC) “He apparently was not a very wellmannered person,” said Rashid. “The people who have interacted with him described him as kind of rough and maybe a little rude.” “At one point, he raised an objection at the Burnaby mosque that he was sort of floating in and out of for a period of three to four months,” Rashid said. “He didn’t like the fact that the mosque was so open and welcoming.” He objected to Masjid al-Salaam and Education Centre in Burnaby, B.C., allowing in nonMuslims According to Rashid, eventually, mosque administrators sat down with Zehaf-Bibeau to explain that the facility was open to other groups in order to work together on common issues. He was told to leave if he had problem but he didn’t raise similar concerns again. He started sleeping in the mosque premises without permission. “When the mosque administration found out, they asked him to leave immediately and asked him never to do that again. “He stole the keys, and when they found out he had keys, they changed all the locks,” he said. Ottawa shooting: Full CBC coverage The Government of Canada takes a principled approach in responding to the threat of terrorism. Canada’s counter-terrorism efforts at home and around the world are grounded in respect for the rule of law and human rights. Human rights are en-
social and economic prosperity. I pray and it is my hope that our brothers and sisters living in countries where life is a constant daily struggle can live such enriched lives. When you take a look at countries that are run by dictators you feel a little more proud of your privilege and freedom to vote that Canada provides for all citizens. If you don’t vote, you have absolutely no grounds to complain. Vote because it’s your opinion can influence change and set direction for government officials, Vote because it’s your chance to make your choice about your future government and of course, express your opinion about the present one, Vote because every vote counts, Vote because your vote is worth just as much as anyone else’s and isn’t your voice worth being heard? Leaders of our community should encourage people to volunteer for candidates as they need our support so that our voices can eventually be heard in local and federal governments. Announcing the names of local candidates must be made on a regular basis during Jummah prayers so that people learn to recognize our candidates. Leaders of our community must take the initiative upon themselves to volunteer for candidates and be role models for our children. They must urge their members to volunteer for candidates and to be vocal in urging individuals to exercise their voting powers. Individuals must volunteer their time without ex-

The need to ensure respect for human rights also stems from applicable human rights and humanitarian law. The Government of Canada is committed to promoting the safety and security of Canadians, and of our international partners, without undermining these rights and eroding the very values that Canada strives to protect. Source: Public Safety Canada’s 2013 Report on the Terrorist Threat Good thing is the religious scholars believe their mission now is to reveal the true intentions and dangers of IS (Islamic State), as a party that is using Islam to recruit people, especially the youth, to carry out its nefarious agenda. The Council of Senior Scholars in Saudi Arabia has done the right thing by labeling IS a criminal and terrorist movement. The IS phenomenon requires a response on religious and ideological levels. However, it is also clear that there is a certain immaturity in a society that does not have the capacity to reject illogical and irrational acts. Therefore, the parents too need to keep an eye on the behaviour and company of their children. Indeed, Islam is a religion of moderation and peace, whereas, extremism, terrorism and suicide attacks are un-Islamic hence are forbidden acts. . People should not make pointless excuses that they are “busy.” Most readily make themselves available by freeing up their schedules for leisure activities yet when they are requested to volunteer their time for assisting with local election campaigns, they are suddenly preoccupied. Adults must show their children that being involved in the issues and activities of their city benefits everyone and provides a sense of genuine accomplishment. My son, Adil Awan, is running as a candidate for city council for the City of Richmond under the banner of Renew Richmond Association. He needs your support on November 15th to ensure that your opinions can be heard at Richmond City Hall. Please contact mawan4@gmail.com for more information on how you can help. Canada, Please Stay Tolerant for My Muslim Children By: Gulshan Alanai My condolences to the family of Soldier killed in Ottawa by a bipolar mentally disturbed criminal minded person Michael Zehaf Bibeau, who was in need of help and proper psychiatric treatment. Such are not radicalized by any other Muslims but by their own hateful, revengeful anger and evil thoughts, who are definitely guided by the evil Iblis the rejected one. Such can only be described as fake Muslims the hypocrites enemies of Islam. There is no shortage of the crazy people going around killing innocents, shooting in Schools, terrorizing nations, similar to ISIS, and Boko Haram, who too can only be described as the fake Muslims. Such hatemongers of innocent humans cannot be the normal people and cannot be the true Muslims. They are bluffing and falsely declaring their conversion to Islam to spread hatred against Islam by their evil actions. This is their treacherous trick that has nothing to do with Islam. Golden words spoken by Fedral NDP leader Thomas Mulcair: “---designed to drive us to hate”. I couldn’t agree more. Surely, we will prevail with patience, perseverance, and with more security built around us, and pray to the Creator-GOD of the Universe for our safety.

Mayoral candidates forum in Surrey brings up safety and other issues
On Oct 23, Surrey mayoral candidates met for the city’s first all-candidates meeting held in Simon Fraser Surrey Campus. Six of the seven candidates turned up to answer questions, posed by the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the audience. These candidates were participated: •Surrey First’s Linda Hepner •Safe Surrey Coalition’s and Former mayor Doug McCallum •One Surrey’s Barinder Rasode •Independent mayoral candidate Grant Rice •Independent mayoral candidate John Edwards •Independent mayoral candidate John
Wolanski The Main Issues discussed in the meeting were: •Taxes per capita in Surrey •increased policing •Surrey City centre growth •Transportation •Purpose-built shelter •North Surrey Recreation centre •Affordable Housing There was a question Answers session in which many other issues were raised and every candidate shared his/her thoughts with the audience.
We’re are all united for Sikandar Hayat.
On October 24, was a great day for our local Muslim community in Surrey, as leaders of many Muslim associations came under one roof to show their support for Sikandar Hayat, a candidate for School Trustee (Surrey Board of Education). That has sent a strong message to everyone out there: We’re are all united for Sikandar Hayat. The Support Sikandar Hayat Fundraising Dinner was a huge success. Tens of brothers, sisters, and even kids came and had a great time. G. Murtaza Chaudhry was the MC of the evening and reminded the audience about the great works Sikandar Hayat has done for our local communities, especially Muslim community. For example; Sikandar Hayat • Amazing Tutors Children’s Foundation, CoFounder / Director •Surrey Muslim School PAC, former Chairman •Muslim Youth Centre, former Vice President •has organized a Clothing & Blanket Drive (in November 2013) for the Homeless • has organize a free Parenting Seminar at the Strawberry Hill Library •W.E. Kinwig Elementary School PAC,
member •Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, assisted seniors with their shopping needs •Oakridge Seniors’ Centre, volunteered with food preparation •The LivingRoom Drop-In Activity Center, served food to the mentally ill Sikandar Hayat informed everyone about the reasons behind him running for School Trustee. He said, “Problems in Surrey schools are going up and quality of education is going down. Only 58% of our grade 12 graduate students were able to enter a post secondary institution in 2012. Our stuedents do not feel safe at schools because of bullying and gangs problems. Many students join gangs to stay safe from bullying and that is just the beginning of another huge problem: a start towards organized gangs. Our young students do not have adequate programs to learn and practice youth leadership roles. We came to Canada for a better future. Our kids are our future. Let’s do our part to provide the best education for our kids, in the safest and most inclusive learning environment. When elected on Nov 15th, I will donate at least 20% of my salary
towards the development / promotion of programs for at-risk students and at-risk behaviours. Please vote for me, Sikandar HAYAT, on November 15, 2014 and help me help your children.” Sikandar HAYAT further requested everyone present to take his message to their own family members and friends and ask them to do the same: spread the message throughout Surrey. He said, “Please take few minutes out of your busy schedules and make a list of your friends’ phone numbers/email. Make sure to call/email them and tell them the importance of voting on November 15th. Repeat the same thing again on November 15th. It is going to require a bit of an effort but please do it for your own children / grandchildren’s sake. Only 25% of registered voters voted in the last Civic election. We MUST do better
this time. Every vote has a great value. While many people across many nations are dying to have a right to vote, 75% of us did not realize the importance of this right in the last Civic election. If you don’t use your right to vote, someone else will. And then you’ll have to live for next 4 years based on only 25% people’s wishes/choices.”

The true Islamic morals By: Haroon You who believe! Enter absolutely into forbidden tension and conflict among people, and mercy and attain Parapeace (Islam). Do not follow in the calumny, suspicion and even having negative dise, is to “urge each other Yayha Some people who say they are acting in the name of religion may misunderstand their religion or practice it wrongly. For this reason, it is a mistake to form any idea of that religion from the activities of these people. The best way to understand Islam is through its holy source. The holy source of Islam is the Qur’an; and the model of morality in the Qur’an is completely different from the image of it formed in the minds of some westerners. The Qur’an is based on the concepts of morality, love, compassion, mercy, modesty, self-sacrifice, tolerance and peace, and a Muslim who truly lives according to these moral precepts is highly refined, thoughtful, tolerant, trustworthy and accommodating. To those around him he gives love, respect, peace of mind and a sense of the joy of life. Islam Is A Religion Of Peace And Well-Being The word Islam has the same meaning as “peace” in Arabic. Islam is a religion that came down to offer humanity a life filled with the peace and well-being in which God’s eternal mercy and compassion is manifested in the world. God invites all people to accept the moral teachings of the Qur’an as a model whereby mercy, compassion, tolerance and peace may be experienced in the world. In Surat al-Baqara verse 208, this command is given:
footsteps of Satan. He is an outright enemy to you. As we see in this verse, people will experience well-being and happiness by living according to the moral teaching of the Qur’an. God Condemns Mischief God has commanded humanity to avoid evil; he has forbidden immorality, rebellion, cruelty, aggressiveness, murder and bloodshed. Those who do not obey this command of God are walking in the steps of Satan, as it says in the verse above, and have adopted an attitude that God has clearly declared unlawful. Of the many verses that bear on this subject, here are only two: But as for those who break God’s contract after it has been agreed and sever what God has commanded to be joined, and cause corruption in the earth, the curse will be upon them. They will have the Evil Abode. (Surat ar-Ra’d: 25) Seek the abode of the hereafter with what God has given you, without forgetting your portion of the world. And do good as God has been good to you. And do not seek to cause mischief on earth. God does not love mischief makers.’ (Surat al-Qasas: 77) As we can see, God has forbidden every kind of mischievous acts in the religion of Islam including terrorism and violence, and condemned those who commit such deeds. A Muslim lends beauty to the world and improves it. Islam Defends Tolerance And Freedom Of Speech Islam is a religion which fosters freedom of life, ideas and thought. It has

thoughts about another individual. Islam has not only forbidden terror and violence, but also even the slightest imposition of any idea on another human being. There is no compulsion in religion. Right guidance has become clearly distinct from error. Anyone who rejects false gods and believes in God has grasped the Firmest Handhold, which will never give way. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (Surat al-Baqara: 256) So remind, you need only to remind. You cannot compel them to believe. (Surat al-Ghashiyah: 22) To force anyone to believe in a religion or to practice it, is against the spirit and essence of Islam. Because it is necessary that faith be accepted with free will and conscience. Of course, Muslims may urge one another to keep the moral precepts taught in the Qur’an, but they never use compulsion. In any case, an individual cannot be induced to the practice of religion by either threat or offering him a worldly privilege. Let us imagine a completely opposite model of society. For example, a world in which people are forced by law to practice religion. Such a model of society is completely contrary to Islam because faith and worship have value only when they are directed toward God. If there were a system that forced people to believe and worship, people would be religious only out of fear of the system. What is acceptable from the point of view of religion is that religion be practiced in an environment where freedom of conscience is permitted, and that it be practiced only for the approval of God. God Has Made The Killing Of Innocent People Unlawful According to the Qur’an, one of the greatest sins is to kill a human being who has committed no fault:...If someone kills another person - unless it is in retaliation for someone else or for causing corruption in the earth - it is as if he had murdered all mankind. And if anyone gives life to another person, it is as if he had given life to all mankind. Our Messengers came to them with Clear Signs but even after that many of them committed outrages in the earth. (Surat al-Ma’ida: 32) Those who do not call on any other deity together with God and do not kill anyone God has made inviolate, except with the right to do so, and do not fornicate; anyone who does that will receive an evil punishment. (Surat al-Furqan: 68) As we can see in the verses above, those who kill innocent human beings without a cause are threatened with evil punishment. God has revealed that killing one person is as great a sin as killing all mankind. Anyone who respected the prerogatives of God would not do harm to even one individual, let alone murdering thousands of innocent people. Those who think that they will escape justice and punishment in this world will never escape the account they must give in the Presence of God on the Last Day. So, those believers who know they will give an account to God after their death, will be very careful about respecting the limits God has established. God Commands Believers To Be Compassionate And Merciful In this verse, Muslim morality is explained: ...To be one of those who believe and urge each other to steadfastness and urge each other to compassion. Those are the Companions of the Right. (Surat al-Balad: 17-18) As we see in this verse, one of the most important moral precepts that God has sent down to His servants so that they may receive salvation
to compassion”. Islam as described in the Qur’an is a modern, enlightened, progressive religion. A Muslim is above all a person of peace; he is tolerant with a democratic spirit, cultured, enlightened, honest, knowledgable about art and science and civilized. A Muslim educated in the fine moral teaching of the Qur’an, approaches everyone with the love that Islam expects. He shows respect for every idea and he values art and aesthetics. He is conciliatory in the face of every event, diminishing tension and restoring amity. In societies composed of individuals such as this, there will be a higher civilization, a higher social morality, more joy, happiness, justice, security, abundance and blessings than in the most modern nations of the world today. God Has Commanded Tolerance And Forgiveness Surat al-A’raf, verse 199, which says “practice forgiveness”, expresses the concept of forgiveness and tolerance which is one of the basic principles of the religion of Islam. When we look at Islamic history, we can see clearly how Muslims established this important precept of the moral teaching of the Qur’an in their social life. At every point in their advance, Muslims destroyed unlawful practices and created a free and tolerant environment. In the areas of religion, language and culture, they made it possible for people totally opposite to each other to live under the same roof in freedom and peace, thereby giving to those subject to them the advantages of knowledge, wealth and position. Likewise, one of the most important reasons that the large and widespread Ottoman Empire was able to sustain its existence for so many centuries was that its way of life was directed by the tolerance and understanding brought by Islam. For centuries Muslims have been characterized by their tolerance and compassion. In every period of time they have been the most just and merciful of people. All ethnic groups within this multi-national community freely practiced the religions they have followed for years and enjoyed every opportunity to live in their own cultures and worship in their own way. Indeed, the particular tolerance of Muslims, when practiced as commanded in the Qur’an, can alone bring peace and well-being to the whole world. The Qur’an refers to this particular kind of tolerance: A good action and a bad action are not the same. Repel the bad with something better and, if there is enmity between you and someone else, he will be like a bosom friend. (Surat al-Fussilat: 34)
Conclusion All this shows that the moral teaching offered to humanity by Islam is one that will bring peace, happiness and justice to the world. The barbarism that is happening in the world today under the name of “Islamic Terrorism” is completely removed from the moral teachings of the Qur’an; it is the work of ignorant, bigoted people, criminals who have nothing to do with religion. The solution which will applied against these individuals and groups who are trying to commit their deeds of savagery under the guise of Islam, will be the instruction of people in the true moral teaching of Islam. In other words, the religion of Islam and the moral teaching of the Qur’an are not the supporters of terrorism and the terrorists, but the remedy by which the world can be saved from the scourge of terrorism.

BC Municipal Elections, Opportunity for Muslims
By: Tariq M Javed (Toronto) Special For Miracle As Monday was the polls-day for the Municipal elections in Ontario, I had to drive to cast my precious vote. And, upon reaching the polling station, I noticed unusual bumper to bumper traffic. After parking at a distance, I had to stand in the long lineup waiting for my turn for at least 40 minutes outside a local school designated for the purpose. The voters’ turnout was impressively great during those particular after-work hours. The number of Muslim voters was slightly up compared to previous elections, yet it wasn’t enough to show an impressive turnout. Fortunately, Councillor Max Khan in Oakville ON and Councillor Zeshan in Milton ON were re-elected. There are a lot of factors adversely affecting the Muslim community in Canada: When it comes to the Canadian political system, the Muslims tend to lag behind, thus, they end up being underrepresented or un-represented at all levels of government including Municipal, Provincial and the Federal. In reality, our concerns as members of the Muslim community remain voiceless at the proper forum - most of the time for lack of representation. This attitude adds salt to the misery of Muslims in general who already have hard time coping with the ongoing Islamophobia in the country. Furthermore, the main stream media hardly misses out any chance to hurt the Muslims’ sentiments; it never hesitates creating anti Muslim hype. This has been going on in the past and still continues. But, there is hardly anyone available to sell our side of the story which is none but innocence. When we are blamed for the criminal wrongs committed by the unknown in proxy or otherwise, we are in trouble in the eyes of general public. Unfairly, the non-Muslims build a negative opinion against Islam, as there is no
one at the proper forum to advocate for our helplessness. Admittedly, a large majority of Canadian Muslims seem to be politically immature while some are fearful due to their historical background, also, many Muslims suffer from laziness, hence involvement is conveniently avoided in the latter case. Consequently, the whole community remains voiceless in legislatures and the city councils. Nevertheless, among the Muslim community, there is a lot of ongoing bickering that the authorities are not doing this or that - which does not make sense at all after what they have omitted carelessly or intentionally. Naturally, they have to pay the price of their willful negligence. If they don’t care about the electoral system, they cannot do home work essential for evaluating credentials of the potential candidates. So they have to keep suffering. Hence, the after-shocks are irrelevant. Furthermore, ignoring to elect the right candidate clearly means taking chances, whereas, a wrong person may end up in the electoral office. This surely is madness because you can’t have voice as said above. Clearly, it’s only through active participation which ensures that you will be heard. Certainly, through participating you shape your world around you. So, please be warned! If the wrong guys manage to get elected because of low turn-out, the office is likely to be occupied by the abusers. That is why, getting involved is crucially important as it means taking part as a candidate (if qualified) and exercising right of vote if so qualified. Rightly said, “There is always light at the end of the tunnel:” Thank God! There is some change for the better which has been noticed with regard to Muslim turn out in other locations in the recent days as mentioned above. Furthermore, it’s encouraging to note that the Muslim youths are gradually turning towards political awakening, yet the slow pace won’t help much as there is a lot of catching up to do in order to enter the mainstream political arena. Obviously, change of attitude is not easy, so it remains the toughest challenge for the Muslim community. Technically speaking, it’s not only about claiming our rights as Canadian citizens

For such Prayers are enjoined on believers at stated times: Quran ,n 4:103 Source: BCMA but also about sharing in the responsibilities and obligations as being part of the Canadian democracy. In other words, one must share the great experiences and learn new skills that will come in handy for the ethnic and multicultural society; this includes school, work and life, of course. The municipal election is the democratic process of selecting the City’s political representatives indeed. As the Municipal Elections in BC are fast approaching, let’s do our home work through thoroughly evaluating the track record of all the available candidates to help the best candidates to reach the public office. We, as Muslims do feel that the social values and domestic policies of the current political parties fail to accurately represent and reflect our values and valid concerns. However, despite all odds, the Muslims have to struggle smartly to have their voice heard and that is through getting involved in the political system. Most probably, the Muslims can benefit from the lower turn out of the (non Muslims) to elect the right Mayor, Trustees and the councillors.
A Message from:
Currently, the BC Muslims have the golden opportunity to make a meaningful difference on the outcome of the upcoming elections. But, the only way to impact on all the municipalities with regard to policies and the political scenery is only through voting for the right candidate on the basis of merit alone. Let me stress upon the importance of an increased Muslim participation in the electoral process, as that only will help Muslims. The qualities to be seen in the potential candidate are integrity, efficiency, dedication, motivation and the past performance. Beyond doubt, the candidates’ presentations, mayoral debates including questions and answers help the electors (audience) make the brilliant choice in the polls. Finally, it is about time to review our reasons of inaction and remove the hurdles in order to move on along with the main stream before it’s too late. Importantly, it’s our duty to ensure that Muslims play an active role in all upcoming elections http://tariqmjaved.blogspot.com

Letters & Opinions
Coming Civic Elections Canada, Please Stay Tolerant for My Muslim Children By Taslim Jaffer My whole life I have struggled with my identity, not really knowing where I fit in culturally. With roots in India, a threegeneration stopover in Kenya and raised as a first-generation Canadian, things often got muddled. I have been subjected to blatant racism and subtle stereotypes. Then the Gulf War broke out in the 90s, and suddenly even my religious identity was put to the test. Imagine having to defend yourself against your grade 7 school teacher who openly hated on Islam. He reduced me to tears in front of my entire class for trying to explain that the word Islam actually means “peace” and that real Muslims don’t do the awful things that were happening at that time. It was a tough task for a 12-year-old Indian Muslim girl to stand up for an entire group of people in front of her peers -do you remember being 12? It was hard enough to transition to adolescence without someone (actually the Western media) trying to make me out to be someone I was not. But through it all, I have been a proud Canadian. That is because I look past the one-offs, the bad seeds. That is because everything that comes with being Canadian -- honour, respect, integrity, kindness, generosity, pluralism, tolerance, acceptance -- are the values I strive to live and hold on to despite whatever I encounter. The events in Ottawa on October 22, 2014 shook me and I will always remember the details of when I heard the news. I was standing outside the preschool waiting for my son’s teacher to open the door when another parent said, “Oh, it’s going to be a bad day...” I whipped my head over to where he was standing and asked, “What? Why?” I wasn’t prepared for what he told me was happening on Parliament Hill. And suddenly, I was in bed in the home I shared with a family in Orillia, Ontario. It was September 11, 2001 and the homeowner was banging on my bedroom door, yelling, “Wake up! Taslim, wake up!” I scrambled out of bed, reached for my glasses and ran out to the living room where she was glued to the T.V., her hand over her mouth. When I saw the second tower come down, I thought, “Oh God. Please don’t let this be someone claiming to be Muslim.” You may wonder how I could even have space in my head for a thought like that while this was happening in real time -I was watching innocent people jump to their deaths. It’s because I was still that 12-year-old Indian Muslim girl who loved Canada, but was ever vulnerable to misinterpretation. Snapping my thoughts back to the present outside the preschool, my gaze rested on the top of my son’s head. And then I turned to his Chinese friend, and then his Indian friend, and over to his Caucasian friend. From child to child, my eyes moved, and filled with tears. Please let them always be like this, oblivious to their “differences.” Please let this not get ugly for them. None of the other parents were openly emotional, and I willed my tears not to fall. But it’s who I am. I will always feel excessively for others, for the people on both sides of the guns. There are just so many victims. And with each awful occurrence like this,
L E T T E R S
C O N T .
my children’s world is being shaped. I try so hard to be religion-neutral, culture-neutral, gender-neutral, and then I send my kids “out there” and hope that nobody taints this tolerant world I am working so damn hard to create. I just read that the mother of the gunman who was shot and killed yesterday stated that she is crying for the victims, not for her son. I choked on the enormous lump in my throat when I read those words, and this time I couldn’t stop the tears. Please cry, Mom. Please cry for the life your son lost, not just when he was shot, but all the years that led up to it. For all the times he felt so alone that he was vulnerable enough to be preyed upon, please cry. For all the times somebody should have recognized a human in need and at least tried to help, please cry for him. Decades after the Gulf War, I am no longer that trembling, dry-mouthed Indian Muslim girl standing before her peers begging, please don’t judge me. I am simply a mother, standing before my country with a message: Canada, I have high expectations of you. I expect you to remain the country I have been proud of my whole life -- dignified, respectable, strong and open. Please continue to be everything I teach my children to be. Please remember who you are. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Terror Attacks In Canada And Condolences To The Families By: Harron Khan & Jamil Ch.( PCA) On behalf of the Pakistan Canada Association and the Al Jamia Masjid Vancouver, we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the families of our fallen soldiers Warrant officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo. Both men served their country with honour and dignity. Their deaths shake us all. Any death is a tragedy but when that death is from murder, the horrifying reality is often too hard to take. We join all Canadians in praying for them and their families at this difficult time. We stand together as proud Canadians and to the Government of Canada we extend our heartfelt thanks that a greater tragedy was averted by the swift and brave actions of our integrated security forces and in particular House of Commons Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers for his valiant actions. Our community along with all Canadians are in shock from these vicious attacks. As Muslims we are deeply outraged that the perpetrators of these acts used their deviated understanding of Islam as a justification for their actions. These deluded individuals and groups must be stopped and we, along with our brothers and sisters throughout the world and here in Canada are working together to promote the truth about Islam and to affect a strategy to counter the falsehoods and vile propaganda being spread. Islam is a religion of peace. Those that practice and understand our faith know that love and not hate is the message. As it is stated in the Holy Quran:Allah says, “O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male & a female, & made you into nations & tribes, that ye may know & love each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most hon-
oured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge & is well acquainted (with all things).” [Al-Hujurat 49:13] .. if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land it would be as if he slew the whole humanity: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole humanity. (5:32) We are blessed to live in a beautiful, diverse, and free country. We will defend our freedoms and Liberties as Canadians. May the Allmighty keep and protect us all.
ISCC and MAT Strongly Condemn Today’s Attacks in Ottawa Prof. Imam Sohardhy (Calgary)
The Muslim Against Terrorism and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada strongly condemn today’s terrorist attacks in Ottawa. According to the media reports one soldier was shot at the War Memorial and he died later. Another security guard was injured at the Parliament Hill. The alleged attacker was also later shot dead by the Police. Our thoughts and the prayers are with the victims and their families. This is a very sad and disturbing situation for all Canadians. We pray for the speedy and full recovery of the injured security guard. We are confident that the criminals will be identified and brought to justice. The Canadian Muslim community stand with the Canadian government and supports all the efforts to identify and capture the terrorists. Once again our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
Bravo BCMA! By: Bilal Cheema, Surrey It’s easy to complain. After all, it’s part and parcel of our human nature. However, it’s just as easy to pay positive tribute when you witness something worthwhile. On that note, and I don’t believe it’s just me that was feeling it, I want to recognize the excellent efforts of our BCMA leadership, including President Br. Musa Ismail and Mufti Aasim Rashid in particular in his role as BCMA Spokesperson. Alhamdulillah, he handled the media with calm and collectiveness rarely seen by so called spokespersons. It has not been an easy week for Muslims across Canada. Delusional men took the law into their own hands last week. While some in the mainstream, including our very own Prime Minister paints them with the label “self-radicalized terrorists”, it’s pretty clear these individuals had other mental health issues that fueled their actions. There’s no jus-
tification for their actions; they murdered other human beings, other fellow Canadians. We should all stand against these actions in a very public and strong way. The coverage has linked one of the men back to BC, to Masjid al Salaam and Education Centre in Burnaby in particular. It’s funny how the mainstream media forgot to mention the Education Centre when they referred to the mosque. It’s part of their official name. As Mufti Aasim suggested, this mosque is very progressive, open to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. I have spent time there and found the committee members and congregation very welcoming and hospitable. They organize diverse events for their congregation; most recently hosting the premier of our province. As I write this, the country is laying to rest Corporal Nathan Cirillo, the reservist soldier gunned down in front of our national War Memorial. We should pay tribute to his service to this country. We are at a critical juncture of our existence in this country as Muslims. While some across our great nation will attempt to further marginalize our existence, others will speak up against ignorant behavior like those beautiful souls who came to the aid of the mosque in Cold Lake Alberta when it was vandalized late last week. I still believe in the goodness of humanity. I trust there’s more good than evil. But we must be part of that humanity that promotes good over evil. These characteristics are at the root of who we are as Muslims. This country has given all of us a better life; at the very least an opportunity at a better life. We should show our gratitude by embracing what it means to be Canadians. Participate in society as a proud Muslim. Because when you do, you help fight the perceptions that are being created to define us. We can define ourselves by our actions, whether it be through sporting events, volunteering at a shelter or a library or welcoming non-Muslims to our mosques to help them learn about our great faith. Thank you BCMA for allowing me to be a proud Muslim Canadian during this difficult week.
Condemn Terror Act By: Ch. Ijaz Chatah, Surrey I strongly condemn the terror acts that befell on Canadian soil in the last couple of weeks, causing loss of two human lives. These attacks are against both divine and human laws and are absolutely unacceptable. The attack on our (Canadian) parliament is extremely distressing and deplorable. Every gentle human heart goes out to the victims of this attack. I am sympathetic with the families of the two soldiers who lost their loved ones
BC Muslim Association Statement on Attacks on Canadian Soldiers.
In addition to our official press release issued on October 22, 2014, Our community conveys our sincere condolences to the families of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, a dedicated and distinguished Canadian Soldier for 28 years, and Corporal Jason Cirillo, who served his country with honour as he guarded the National War Memorial yesterday. We pray for them, for those who were injured, their families and the safety of all Canadians. We would also like to applaud the efforts of House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers for his heroic act in stopping the assailant in Ottawa. It has also come to our attention since yesterday’s tragic event, that the assailant in the shooting in Ottawa may have attended one of our Mosques in the past. Though it is troubling to learn that Michael Zihaf-Bibeau did attend one of our centers for some time, it is of some relief to know that the mosque was not the locale for his radicalization. We take this opportunity to inform the public of a preventative program we have been working on and hope to implement with the cooperation of Canadian law enforcement agencies, as well as other institutions. Part of this program will focus on minimizing the effect of terrorist and criminal propaganda in Canada. We will be holding a Press Conference tomorrow at 10:30 AM on October 24th, 2014 at the Masjid Al-Salaam & Education Centre, 5060 Canada Way in Burnaby, BC to address this, and to answer any media inquiries.

Canada’s true role in the Mideast conflict
By Jean Chrétien When I travel to any corner of Canada, complete strangers from every walk of life come up to me on street corners, in restaurants, in airports, to take a moment to talk to me. Sometimes, they thank me for my service during my long career in public life. There is one sentence that I hear over and over again: “Mr. Chrétien, thank you for keeping us out of the war in Iraq.” It is gratifying to hear, because that decision, more than 10 years ago, was not easy. The country was divided. Many columnists, pundits and editorialists were in favour of participating. Some within my own party disagreed with me, the business community opposed me, and no one was a louder critic than Stephen Harper, then leader of the Official Opposition. He even went on U.S. television and wrote an article in The Wall Street Journal denouncing the Canadian government’s policy. Today, there is almost universal recognition that we made the right decision. And so, in recent weeks, many people have asked me what I would do about the current situation in Iraq and Syria. Do I agree with Mr. Harper’s position or Mr. Trudeau’s? What should Canada do? Here is my answer. There is no more serious decision for an elected official than sending men and women into conflict. The consequences, at home and abroad, are enormous. A wrong decision, such as the invasion of Iraq in 2003, can have disastrous results that reverberate for years. The current rise of the Islamic State is in large part a result of that war. I know what it is like to send Canadians into combat. The government I led participated in multilateral combat missions in both Kosovo and Afghanistan because we determined that it was the best contribution Canada could
make in those very difficult circumstances. So I am not always opposed to sending Canadians into combat. But these are decisions that must be made with utmost seriousness and consideration. In general, it should also be done with a clear mandate and under the umbrella of the United Nations or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is clearly not the case here. We have an obligation to proceed with the utmost caution, and to weigh all the potential consequences before joining a combat mission. For example, all the war in Iraq did was to make the region and the world a much more dangerous place. The legacy of colonialism in the Middle East had not been forgotten and was only exacerbated by the Western military intervention in Iraq in 2003, with the consequences we face today. Unfortunately, Mr. Harper did not understand that history in 2003, and he does not understand it today. The current situation is in some ways very different from 2003. The Islamic State’s atrocities must be stopped. But Western countries must be cognizant of the region’s history in deciding how to act. There are two components to the crisis – one military and one humanitarian. Both must be addressed. The Iraqi government has asked for U.S. assistance and President Barack Obama has responded with air strikes. But given the history of the region and the sensitivities to Western military interventions, I believe that any U.S.-led military coalition should be composed mainly of Arab countries, with minimal participation by other Western countries. I have enormous admiration for the men and women of the Canadian armed forces. But the reality is that the military contribution Mr.
Harper’s government has authorized will be very marginal. What it really does is to add Canada to a list of contributing Western countries. The history of the Middle East tells us that this list should be very short, not long. No one underestimates the Islamic State. But the issues are the best ways to combat it and the best contributions Canada can make. If the region sees military intervention as just another knee-jerk Western show of force, we all know what the long-term consequences will be. This is why I believe the best contribution Canada can make is by engaging in massive, not token, humanitarian assistance. It is why in answer to the questions asked of me, I support Mr. Trudeau’s position. The Islamic State has created a massive humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced. Neighbouring countries are dealing with floods of refugees. The World Food Program is almost out of funds and winter is approaching. The Prime Minister may believe that not participating in the combat mission means Canada will be sitting on the sidelines. He is absolutely wrong – Canada should be on the front line, addressing the humanitarian crisis.
For well over 50 years, it has been the Canadian way to open our hearts, our doors and our wallets to victims of great upheavals – Hungarians in the 1950s, Ugandans in the 1970s, Vietnamese boat people in the 1980s, refugees from the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. And I am always thrilled by the great contribution they make after arriving. Here are two concrete initiatives I would recommend for Mr. Harper to put Canada on the front lines of the humanitarian crisis while a U.S.-led, primarily Arab coalition focuses on the military crisis. First, Canada should offer to immediately take 50,000 refugees fleeing the Islamic State. I hope the government will move on this quickly. Second, the government should immediately allocate $100-million for the World Food Program, to help feed refugees facing a harsh winter. I understand that faced with the barbarism of the Islamic State, many Canadians want their leaders to respond swiftly. It is a natural reaction and is praiseworthy. It’s exactly what I am proposing as a natural extension of Mr. Trudeau’s decision and Canada’s long-standing tradition. Source: The Globe and Mail

What is the flu? Influenza, commonly known as the “flu,” is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract. What’s the difference between a cold and flu? The common cold and flu are both contagious viral infections of the respiratory tract. Although the symptoms can be similar, flu is much worse. A cold may drag you down a bit, but the flu can make you shudder at the very thought of getting out of bed. Congestion, sore throat, and sneezing are common with colds. Both cold and flu bring coughing, headache, and chest discomfort. With the flu, though, you are likely to run a high fever for several days and have body aches, fatigue, and weakness. Symptoms of the flu also tend to come on abruptly. Usually, complications from colds are relatively minor, but a severe case of flu can lead to a life-threatening illness such aspneumonia. More than 100 types of cold viruses are known, and new strains of flu evolve every few years. Since both diseases are viral, antibiotics cannot conquer cold or flu. Remember: Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. Two antiviral medications are available to treat flu. But there are no medications that specifically defeat the common cold. Antibiotics may be helpful only if there is a secondary bacterial infection. How are stomach flu and influenza different? “Stomach flu” is a popular term, but not a
true medical diagnosis. It’s not uncommon to mistake gastroenteritis, which is what stomach flu is, for the viral infection we commonly call the “flu.” Gastroenteritis refers to inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines). Viruses are the most common cause of stomach flu. With gastroenteritis, you may have symptoms such as abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. For more about gastrointestinal flu, read WebMD’s Stomach Flu or Influenza? How is flu spread? The flu virus is spread from person to person through respiratory secretions and typically sweeps through large groups of people who spend time in close contact, such as in daycare facilities, classrooms, college dormitories, military barracks, offices, and nursing homes. Flu is spread when you inhale droplets in the air that contain the flu virus, make direct contact with respiratory secretions through sharing drinks or utensils, or handle items contaminated by an infected person. In the latter case, the flu virus on your skin can infect you when you touch or rub your eyes, nose, or mouth. That’s why frequent and thorough handwashing is a key way to limit the spread of influenza. Flu symptoms start to develop from one to four days after infection with the virus. Who’s at greatest risk for flu complications? While anyone can get flu, infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and HIV are at highest risk for flu complications. Despite advances in
Healthy Aging: What Can You Control ? By Stephanie Watson When it comes to aging, Bebe Shaw didn’t hit the genetic lottery. Her mother died from congestive heart failure, her father of a heart condition. The younger of her two brothers had a heart attack at age 52, and her younger sister is on the verge of congestive heart failure. Shaw, 69, has high cholesterol -- a serious risk factor for heart disease. With such a checkered health history, she’s not taking any chances. “I am an advocate of exercise and diet,” says Shaw, who works as a paralegal in Ocala, Fla. “I play tennis 3 days a week, go to [indoor cycling] and Zumba classes at the Y twice a week, and try to ride my bike on a nearby trail every day.” She also eats well, takes a statin drug to control her cholesterol, and visits her doctor regularly for checkups and screenings. Aging: Nature or Nurture? Looking at your relatives’ medical histories is like peering into a crystal ball. You get a glimpse at your future but not the whole picture. You can’t change the genes you inherited, but you can avoid habits that contributed to your family’s health problems. “Some people can have a family history of heart disease, but it’s actually a history of smoking, overeating, and [an inactive] lifestyle. And if you adopt that lifestyle, you’re going to run into the same problems your parents did,” says James Pacala, MD. He is the associate head of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota. Lifestyle was a big factor in Shaw’s family: Her father was overweight, and her younger brother, a smoker. Take preventive action now to help make sure you’re healthy into your 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. “You must remain active and engaged. By that, I mean physically and
flu prevention and treatment, the CDC estimates that deaths related to influenza range from 3,000 to 49,000 deaths in the United States each year. Specific strains of flu can be prevented by a flu vaccine, either a flu shot or nasal spray flu vaccine. In addition, antiviral medications are available to prevent flu. These drugs may help reduce the severity and the duration of flu and are best used within the first 48 hours of the appearance of flu symptoms. Are there different types of flu viruses? Researchers divide flu viruses into three general categories: types A, B, and C. All three types can mutate, or change into new strains, and type A influenza mutates often, yielding new strains of the virus every few years. This means that you can never develop a permanent immunity to influenza. Even if you develop antibodies against a flu virus one year, those antibodies are unlikely to protect you against a new strain of the flu virus the next year. Type A mutations are responsible for major flu epidemics every few years. Type B is less common and generally results in milder cases of flu. However, major flu epidemics can occur with type B every three to five years. Type C causes infection but does not cause typical flu symptoms. Both influenza A and B have been linked to the development of Reye’s syndrome, a potentially fatal complication that usually affects children and teens under age 18. Widespread outbreaks of Reye’s syndrome have occurred with influenza type B and also with chickenpox, but other viruses have been implicated. The risk of Reye’s syndrome is increased when taking aspirin, so children should not take aspirin.
mentally active and socially engaged,” says Pacala, who is also president of the American Geriatrics Society. He ticks off the necessities: aerobic and resistance exercises, a balanced diet that’s low in saturated fat and high in fruits and vegetables, and brain games and social outings to keep you sharp. You also want to try to avoid diseases. “Get your immunizations, your cancer screening tests, your cardiac and osteoporosis risk factors assessed before you have those problems,” Pacala says. Staying Forever Young We’ve all seen 70- and 80-year-olds who look and act decades younger. How do they do it? Pacala shares a few secrets. Refuse to take it slow. “There’s a sort of societal expectation that you’re supposed to slow down as you get old, and I think you should fight against that,” Pacala says. “Don’t let your grandkids get up and mow the lawn for you and get you a glass of water. Get up and do it yourself.” Take a daily walk. Even if your pace is gentle and the distance is short, the time spent on your feet will help keep your bones strong. Read the newspaper with your morning bowl of oatmeal. Keeping your mind engaged could ward off the brain changes that lead to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, while the whole grains in your bowl help prevent heart disease. Downsize your portions. Overeating leads to obesity and diabetes, which can shorten your lifespan. An overstuffed plate has also been linked to memory loss in people 70 and older.
Most influenza viruses that infect humans seem to originate in parts of Asia, where close contact between livestock and people creates a hospitable environment for mutation and transmission of viruses. Swine, or pigs, can catch both avian (meaning from birds, such as poultry) and human forms of a virus and act as hosts for these different viral strains to meet and mutate into new forms. The swine then transmit the new form of the virus to people in the same way in which people infect each other -- by transmitting viruses through droplets in the air that people breathe in. What is avian or bird flu? Bird flu, or avian influenza, is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. Bird flu epidemics have occurred worldwide. Bird flu is a leading contender to be the next pandemic flu bug because it has caused an unprecedented epidemic in poultry and wild birds across Asia and Eastern Europe. Still, no one knows for sure whether this will cause the next human flu pandemic.

Surrey named among World’s Smart 21 Communities The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) has named the City of Surrey as one of the world’s Smart21 Communities of 2015. As one of the 21 semi-finalists selected from more than 300 nominations, Surrey is now in contention for the prestigious designation of ‘Intelligent Community of the Year’. “This is a significant milestone for Surrey’s progressive use of digital technology to foster economic, social and cultural opportunities,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “Being designated a Smart21 community will not only help to advance Surrey’s global profile, but it makes our city more attractive to companies looking at investing in Canada.” Surrey’s progressive approach is outlined in its recently adopted “Smart Surrey Strategy” which provides a framework to build a city that uses technology and innovation to transform life and work within the region. Strategy initiatives include: •The “My Surrey App”, a convenient alternative for residents to engage and interact with the city. The app acts a portal for all Surrey apps and also includes features such as news, events, facility locations, job listings, bike routes, and parking. •Citywide Wi-Fi service in partnership with Shaw Communications Inc. which will soon be offered free at more than 40 locations throughout the city, including recreation centres, and a number of parks, civic buildings and public spaces. •An Open Data Catalogue, comprising more data sets than any other municipality in Canada, available free on the City website. The catalogue includes datasets on crime, financial information and restaurant inspections.
•The ‘Surrey Request App’ which enables citizens to report issues, including litter, graffiti, potholes, street light outages, and park maintenance. •Innovation Boulevard, a partnership of health, business, higher education and government which is creating new health technologies to improve peoples’ lives in the areas of medical devices, independent living and digital health. “With more and more people coming to live and work in Surrey, it is important that we encourage social engagement and connectivity,” said Councillor Bruce Hayne, Chair of the Investment and Innovation Committee. Nominated communities provided a detailed explanation of programs and initiatives that address IFM’s five intelligent community indicators; broadband access, a knowledge based workforce, innovation, digital inclusion and marketing and advocacy. The 2015 Smart21 Communities finalists comprise three communities from Canada, five from the United States, four from Australia, four from Taiwan, and one each from Brazil, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya and New Zealand. The Intelligent Community Forum is a think tank that studies the economic and social development of the 21st Century community. Its mandate is to educate communities on how to build prosperous economies, solve social problems and enrich local cultures. One community will be chosen in June 2015 to succeed Toronto as the 2015 Intelligent Community of the Year.

Self-Care Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor The statement “just be yourself” sounds amazing and we wish many times that we could do that. It is often possible to just be your self. People who are afraid of social situations are actually not being them selves. Their real self is just being covered up with conditioned fear-based thinking. Our true self is who we really are when we let go of all of the stories, labels and judgments that we have placed upon ourselves. It is who we naturally are without the masks. There is a helpful way to uncover your real nature which is being outside of the accumulated thoughts and beliefs. If you ever watch small children, you will notice just how free they are and how little they care about what other people think of them. They are happy and in the moment. Theyy are their true natures. They y have
not yet been socialized to “fit in” to a society that squashes that. T h e y d o n ’ t care if people think that they are silly while they do anything as they are nott doing things to please others. Children are just pure love and light. If you really want to get in touch with your inner child, become more free. Play, have fun, enjoy the moment andd do things that makes you happy. Life is too short to live in a hope to make everyone else happy. Self-care should be your priority. Other things will automatically fall into places!! shabnam@skcounselling.ca @ g

Did You Thank Allah for Your Eyesight?
SHAKILA (Lady Instructor) : 778-927-2423
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more peo-
ple were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.” What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.” Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? “It is He, Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), sight (eyes), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give.” [surah Al-Mu’minun; 78]

IOC and FIFA reach agreement over 2022
International Olympic Committee VicePresident Craig Reedie said on Tuesday (October 28) that the presidents of the athletic organisation and FIFA had agreed that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will not clash with the Winter Olympics. Earlier this month FIFA revived the possibility of staging the 2022 World Cup in January and February after president Sepp Blatter had previously ruled out the idea last year. Speaking at a conference in London, Reedie said that Blatter and his IOC counterpart Thomas Bach had an agreement that the two events would not overlap. “There’s a general agreement between the presidents of the two organisations that there will not
be a clash,” he said. “That would tend to indicate that the IOC would prefer to see the World Cup before Christmas rather than after Christmas. There is clearly an issue with the European football associations and I’m not sure how FIFA are going to resolve that, but certainly we would not like to have a clash between the Winter Games which is a huge event in its own right as you can see from Sochi, and as you could see from the coverage of Sochi, and the World Cup, which is a huge event in its own right, it doesn’t make any sense to have these two big events clashing. We think there is an arrangement in place to avoid that.” Qatar was originally awarded the World Cup on
the widely-held understanding that it would be staged in the summer, but although officials have insisted that a summer World Cup is viable thanks to cooling technologies being developed for stadiums, training areas and fan zones, they say they have no problems in moving it to any time of the year according to the wishes of the international football community. The host of the 2022 Games will be decided in July, with Almaty in Kazakhstan and Beijing in China the only remaining candidates after Oslo was the latest city to withdraw due to a lack of support for what is seen by many as a costly bidding process. for me bringing consistency is much more important,” Waqar said during Pakistan’s training session in Abu Dhabi. “Because we have always been unpredictable, sometimes up and then down, so we need to give consistent performances. It is necessary that if we give a performance then we must have a follow-through so that people have confidence in us as a side. We have proved in the first Test that we have got the talent and the potential so if we apply ourselves then results will come.” In the last 20 years, Pakistan have never won a series against Australia. If they beat them 2-0, Pakistan will leapfrog England, Sri Lanka and India into third place in the ICC Test rankings, and a 1-0 win will take them to fourth. Australia have already lost their chance of regaining the No. 1 ranking from South Africa. Waqar
said Pakistan were targeting a 2-0 scoreline, but warned that Australia would be smarting from their defeat in Dubai and desperate to hit back. “The message is simple - don’t give up, the series is not finished, there is a second Test and we have to win the second Test,” he said. “You have to work hard consistently every day to win the series. We have the potential, the spinners did well, and the best thing is that new players are emerging and are taking more responsibility. Waqar said he wasn’t surprised by the performance of Pakistan’s bowlers in Dubai, since he had observed how Australia played while losing to Pakistan A in their four-day warm-up match in Sharjah. Before the Test he had said he had spotted Australia’s weaknesses and was looking to exploit them. Waqar took over as head coach before the
Waqar aims for more consistency
Pakistan have a chance of shooting up the ICC Test rankings if they seal a series win against Australia, but for their head coach Waqar Younis, rankings are less important than making his team a more consistent unit. “To come in top three is a big thing but
Sri Lanka tour in August. There, they lost the Test series 2-0 and lost the ODIs by a 2-1 margin. Going into the Test series, Pakistan had lost all three ODIs and the solitary T20 against Australia. Waqar said the Dubai win was a sign the players and the new team management were slowly beginning to gel and understand their roles. “The whole idea was that if we have got the skills and the potential then it’s a matter of applying ourselves and we did that in the first Test and I am sure and hopeful that the boys will be more determined to apply more. There is always room for improvement and we need to do that in every session, every match. It’s a pure test against Australia, they really feel proud of their cricket and beating them is always fun.” Source: Cricinfo
