UKRAINE CRISIS: RUSSIAN TROOPS CROSSED BORDER, NATO SAYS
NATO has seen Russian military equipment and Russian combat troops entering Ukraine this week, its top commander Gen Philip Breedlove says. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg later urged Russia to pull back its forces. Russia’s defence ministry denied sending troops to eastern Ukraine to help pro-Russian separatists there. The European OSCE monitoring mission has warned of “a real risk” of further escalation in a conflict that has killed more than 4,000 people. Heavy artillery fire rocked the east Ukrainian city of Donetsk, the industrial hub held by pro-Russian separatist rebels, on Wednesday. There were also reports of fighting near the rebel-held city of Luhansk, with one Ukrainian soldier killed and another injured, according to Ukrainian security forces. Events in Ukraine seem to be turning full circle. Back in August, NATO was warning about the deployment of Russian artillery batteries inside Ukraine, the supply of Russian military equipment to the rebel forces and the build-up of further Russian combat units at the Ukrainian frontier. Since then many of these units have

ISIS does not exist in Pakistan
Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ahmed on Tuesday claimed that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), or Da’aish in Arabic, does not exist in Pakistan, saying only some terrorist groups were using its name, which should not be a cause of concern to anybody. Talking to the media after the 18th passing-out parade at the Sachal Rangers Headquarters here, he said the Karachi operation, launched under the command of the former Director-General of Rangers, Sindh, Major-General Rizwan Akhtar, had improved the law and order situation in the city and hoped that his successor, Major-General Bilal Akbar, will continue the operation with the same commitment. “I hope that the present DG Rangers Sindh, who is a highly competent and professional person, will complete the task of his predecessor and rid Karachi of terrorists and criminals,” he observed. DG Rangers, Sindh, Major-General Bilal Akbar, Deputy DG Rangers Sindh, Sector and wing Commanders and other officials were also present on the occasion.Lauding the role of Sindh Rangers in improving the law and order situation in Karachi, he said that Rangers officials and personnel sacrificed their lives for peace in the megacity, carried out over 4,000 targeted raids and operations and arrested over 7,500 terrorists, criminals and gangsters during the last 14 months. The Interior Minister said Karachi’s situation with respect to law and order was still not ideal but claimed that there was an improvement
observed in Karachi during the last couple of months. He claimed that there were threats of terrorist activity in Karachi on the 10th of Muharram and added that the law enforcing and intelligence agencies foiled many terrorist plots by arresting terrorists before they could implement their nefarious designs. On the occasion, he announced that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would soon visit Karachi, chair a high-level meeting on the law and order situation and review the progress during the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi. Chaudhry Nisar also mentioned Lyari in his speech and directed police and Rangers to continue their action and raids in the area to rid the people of Lyari of gangsters and criminals. He further asked the police to present challans of arrested terrorists before the courts at the earliest and prosecute them as without prosecution, arrest of criminals and terrorists was meaningless. Congratulating the 1,115 Rangers personnel on their passing-out, he said it was the best ceremony and parade he had seen in the entire country.Earlier, the Jawans of Sindh Rangers’ Mehran, Bhittai, Indus, Qasim, Sachal, Thar and Ghazi companies presented the march-past and the guard of honour to the chief guest, and they were administered the oath of allegiance to the country. On the occasion, the Jawans from different passing-out companies were present. Source: The news
A suspected US drone has strike killed at least four armed men in Pakistan’s tribal belt near the Afghan border, security officials say. The drone attack on Tuesday took place in the village of Datta Khel, about 40km west of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district, an area known as a stronghold for Taliban. The village of Datta Khel has been previously attacked at least six times in September and October by Pakistani military air strikes. “A US drone fired two missiles hitting a vehicle and a house that killed four militants while two other were injured,” a security official told AFP news agency. Another official confirmed the incident, saying identities of the dead could not be ascertained. Pakistan’s foreign ministry condemned the drone strike in a statement issued to the media, a regular reaction to such attacks, which have been targeting anti-government fight-
ers in the tribal areas since 2004. The US does not officially confirm or deny its role in the drone strikes as a matter of policy. “Pakistan considers such strikes a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, especially at a time when our authorities are engaged in taking decisive action against terrorist elements in North Waziristan Agency,” the statement said. Also on Tuesday, 13 other fighters were killed in air strikes by Pakistani forces in Khyber tribal district. The men were believed to have been involved in a recent attack near the India-Pakistan border that killed 55 people.”Strikes were carried out on intelligence about the presence of terrorists involved in Wagah border suicide attack,” the statement said. A suicide bomber struck at the Wagah border crossing near the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on November 2 in one of the deadliest such attacks to hit Pakistan for more than a year.
The Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad has issued arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, Imran Khan, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief, Dr. Tahirul Qadri and others. The arrest warrants have been issued on the police department’s request, in connection with the attack on the Pakistan Television (PTV) building and the parliament.
Besides Imran Khan, Tahirul Qadri, and Sheikh Rasheed, arrest warrants have also been issued for Chief Minister Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak, PTI Central Vice President Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar and PAT’s Raheeq Abbasi. The accused are wanted by the police for attacking the PTV building and the parliament building as well as assaulting police officers. Cases against them have been registered at the Secretariat police station.
Terming the pledged over $40 billion Chinese investment as a “milestone” in the history of Pak-China relations, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said it would help address the years old energy crisis in Pakistan. Speaking to media representatives upon arrival from Berlin, he also set aside the impression that the investment from China was a loan, saying, “It is not a loan, but Chinese investment, which would benefit Pakistan a lot and further strengthen Pak-China ties”. He was appreciative of the Chinese government for their decision to make such a huge investment to help Pakistan meet its energy requirements. Prime Minister Sharif was confident that owing to his government’s serious efforts, the years old energy crisis would be resolved during the current tenure of PML-N government. Referring to PTI Chairman Imran Khan led anti-government protests, Sharif regretted that some elements did not want to see these issues resolved by his government. “But these elements would be left behind and the country would move forward,” he remarked. The prime minister termed his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as positive and hoped that German companies would also make investment in Pakistan’s energy sector. To a question about the impact of sit-ins on Pakistan’s economy, Nawaz Sharif agreed that the sit-ins did
affect the investors’ confidence, adding that the scheduled visits of the leaders from China, Sri Lanka, Qatar and Maldives were also postponed. Prime Minister Sharif, in response to a question, said the operation against terrorists was currently ongoing in Pakistan. However, he added that if there was economic progress and prosperity in the country, it would also help address other issues including terrorism. Regarding the PTI’s demand of including the country’s intelligence agencies in the probe of alleged election rigging, the premier said politicians should not make such demands and the issue should be resolved within the given criteria. To another question, Nawaz Sharif mentioned the appreciation of rupee against dollar as well as the record upward trend in the country’s stock market as positive economic indicators. “If the energy crisis is resolved with the availability of electricity and gas to consumers and factories and industries run smoothly, it is the only path of development, prosperity and the elimination of poverty. All other paths are misleading,” he remarked. Earlier, upon arrival the prime minister was received by representative of British Government, Nicholas Jarrold and Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Syed Ibne Abbas along with the officials of the High Commission.

Menace of Islamic State and Islamophobia The ongoing Th i rise i off IS (Islamic (I l i state, also called DAISH) along with growing Islamophobia are quite irksome. The embattled region of Mid East is in trouble so is Pakistan where “Operation Zarb-i-Azb” by the Pakistan Army in North Waziristan has successfully eliminated the threat of TTP and other militant organisations including Al Qaeda, the Haqqanis, Uzbeks and Uighurs. Also, the ‘infrastructure of terrorism’ which existed there such as training camps, arms caches, communications facilities etc., has all been successfully destroyed. In this operation, more than 4,000 terrorists have been killed and hundreds captured. As a result of the military pressure, the TTP has broken up splitting into several factions. All militants in the area have disappeared resulting in the sharp decline in the frequency of terrorist attacks. The Wagah bombing against the soft target of innocent civilians was an act of desperation, yet the public opinion is firmly behind the anti-terrorist campaign. Actually, the Wagah suicide attack has strengthened the domestic consensus in favour of the ongoing ‘operation zarb e azb.’ Shocking development: The provincial government of Balochistan has conveyed a confidential report to Islamabad, and the relevant law enforcement agencies have been warned of the “increased footprints” of militant organisation “IS” in two provinces of Pakistan namely Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunwa. This indicates a huge trouble ahead; like Iraq and Syria, there is a bad news in the making for the people of Pakistan and a real challenge for Pakistan Military and Civil Armed Forces. The sources disclosed, the IS has claimed to have recruited a massive 10 to 12,000 followers from the Hangu and Kurram Agency tribal areas. “It has been reliably learnt that Daish has offered some elements of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Ahl-e-Sunnat Wai Jamat ( (ASWJ) ) to jjoin hands in Pakistan.
Daish D i h hhas also l fformed d a tten-member “Strategic Planning Wing,” in retaliation to the army-led Zarb-iAzb operation. A heightened vigilance and security measures in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are surely needed to prevent and pre-empt such attacks. Obviously, the US withdrawal is an opportunity for the IS to focus on Pakistan and Afghanistan. In other words, Pakistan faces a perceived threat which can become real threat if Pakistan security apparatus fails to check footprints of the “IS” which is headed by Abu Bakar AlBaghdadi. Furthermore, wall-chalking in support of IS in some cities of Pakistan, including Karachi and Khanewal is quite thought provoking. Although, the challenge facing the West is of lone-wolf sympathizer attacks, yet the brutal IS has been actively involved in killing hundreds of Muslims and some American, Canadian and UK citizens, including journalists and aid workers. The problem is the IS organization has been succeeding in having attracted foreign fighters from every corner of the world, including Canada. The latest federal report from Ottawa, indicated more than 130 Canadians abroad taking part in terrorist activities, and another 80 returned to Canada. (http://www.yorkregion. com/news-story/4941649-no-connection-between-ottawa-gunmanand-quebec-attacker-rcmp-say/) It seems as if the ferocious Islamic State elements intend to turn the West against “Islam and the Muslims” through their dirty inhuman work. If the “IS” is really targeting Islam, it needs to be looked at carefully by the international community without prejudice. The spread of Islam is based on logic, not forcible conversion - there is no compulsion in the matter of religion. The Quran is not a man made book; it was revealed as the final version to the final Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the angel Gabriel. The said book is guidance and a manual of successful pious life for all humankind includingg the

NO voice for another 4 years.
By: Sikandar Hayat, Candidate, Surrey School Trustee How many times have you ever seen a School Trustee? 99% of the people I have met during my election campaign, don’t even know who the School Trustees are? People have never seen or heard about the Board of Education. Community members feel that their voices are not heard. Most people are so frustrated that they do not even want to bother going to cast their vote. This is exactly what CURRENT POLITICIANS WANT you to do. It works perfectly for them. If you don’t cast your vote, current Trustees might win again and you will have NO voice for another 4 years. Problems in our public schools are going up and the quality of education is going down. According to some estimates, about 40% of students get bullied or teased at our schools. Students who get bullied are afraid to go to school and have high anxiety levels, which in turn affects their learning ability. Many students join gangs to avoid being bullied in secondary schools, but that is the beginning of another huge problem - drugs. When these students are 18 years old and out of the school system, they are more likely to get involved with organized crimes. Where have the cur-
Muslims. M li Unless read and understood in entirety, there should be no nonsense opinion about the noble Qur^an. Sadly, the media only tries to sell misinformation to the naive public that is too blind to see the truth; reliance on the media news without confirmation is unethical. As the Quran makes sense, Islamophobia stands no chance. Lack of responsibility: Shame on the religious zealots who interpret erroneous picture of Islam and spread radical and extreme views among masses to inflame the fragile situation. Other factor is, despite the airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the radical group enjoys a “successful recruitment strategy” through social media attracting young Westerners. The question is what are the root causes that lead the Western youths to forsake their identities and lifestyles to swell ISIS ranks as fighters? Historically speaking, Iraqis were rich people living with the highest quality and same is true for Libya. Also, the world back then was a much safer place. Both Russia and China were against regime change in Libya and Iraq. Russia opposed helping and arming rebels in Syria as well. Bigger trouble: The Islamic State (faking) has become the most compelling and attractive organisation for the troubled/confused/vulnerable youths around the world in a very short time. Major threat: The so called Islamic state continues to cause even greater unrest in countries where Muslims aren’t a majority. The Islamic State group is bent upon tearing apart the whole Middle East making a mess/unrest for the present and future generations. The countries with heavy Muslim population are nervous for sound reason: India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population, but is in shock after Islamic State sympathisers have turned up from Kashmir in the north to Tamil Nadu in the south.

Suspicions S i i will ill easily il be b raised i d by b Islamophobes in the west including Canada, the US, and Europe. Chaos: The so called “Islamic State” has already sparked political and theological instability across the Middle East, and if they continue expanding, the region wouldd certainly slip into even greater turmoil. As, the terrorist “IS” has promptedd blasts and fighting in Lebanon, Jordan and Kuwait, the governments are worried that sleeper cells may be striking any moment. No wonder, Saudi Arabia is extremely worried that the Islamic State group will come after them with force. In a recent interview, a senior Islamic State defector said theirr next stop would be Saudi Arabia, which includes Mecca and Medina. (http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse// security/2014/07/syria-oppositionis-saudi-arabia.html). Saudi rulers are now in full panic, sending money to the Lebanese army, funding UN counter-terrorism efforts, and even getting seniorr Muftis to condemn the group. Guess what! The Saudi governmentt is most likely to be asking Pakistan Army to security-guard against the IS. As terrorism has no religion, the faking Islamic State (IS) cannot be preaching nor can it be practising Islam; the barbaric force is mostt likely a sponsored proxy terroristt force aimed at showing “ISLAM” as a bad guy. Motive of course seems to be the commercial profiting. There is a need of collective effortt and shared response from media, civilian institutions, political parties and security forces to combatt terrorism, radicalism and extremism. Islam teaches only moderation, yett a well funded education programme is need of the hour to eradicate radicalization and Islamophobia in the West. . Waan laysa lil insaniilla ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for. By: M.Hajee I have mentioned this before, and in the wake of the past municipal elections, it is time to say this again. Voters need to be better informed before electing someone that has the power to control their finances for the next few years. How do people decide who to vote for? The naked reality is that most people will vote on ethnic lines: Whites will vote for white candidates, Chinese will vote for Chinese candidates, East Indian / Punjabis will vote for their kind. Is this fair? Do we bypass voting for someone who may be better suited for the job just because he / she is not of our ethnicity? In countries like Switzerland, for example, every politician’s voting record is made public, either in print or on-line on a regular basis. This way the voting public knows exactly how Politician Scoundrel voted on various issues, or whether he / she was absent during the crucial vote. By making a summarized copy of the Hansard available to the public (Freedom of Information Act should allow this), we can better judge how those we elected into office are performing their duties to represent our interests, whether locally, Provincially or Federally. These should then be made available as inserts in various newspapers and on-line, sorted by locality. For example, those in Kelowna area should be in-

Obligation Of Election Participation The rising political temperature ahead of November15th civic election in the municipalities of British Columbia are the source of excitement of course. With the political wrangling already getting red hot, many people are desperately contesting to grab the mayoral position. And, there are number of candidates trying to win against available positions for the office of councillorship, while many candidates are struggling for the school trustees. As the race is interesting one, the local citizens must feel free to go ahead and vote for their favourite contestants for next three year tenure. Taking an active part in the democratic process is duty of every eligible voter. Ignoring the important process and the obligated participation therein would be of great disadvantage to the local citizens. Exercising the right of vote means electing those who have a clean past record with integrity. However, “not voting” means missing out the extremely important opportunity to effectively voice your opinion about the right candidate. In fact, the political process has been designed in a way, where voting connects the voters with each other, so that the candidates with majority votes are chosen to look after the official duties. Furthermore, just a simple act of marking ballot tells our leaders exactly what we think about policy decisions that affect our lives. Fair taxation, health care issues, the environment and numerous other issues are handled
better, if competent people with integrity are chosen at the time of election. Moreover, through voting each citizen becomes politically aware of the democratic system, obligations and the advantages. On the contrary, the citizen with “I don’t care” attitude actually encourages the opposite of “fair and impartial” election results; thus contributes negatively. And the level playing field is compromised again to the disadvantage of the local community. It is clear that by not voting, the citizen is staying SILENT resulting in the loss of any right of voicing later to correct any misappropriation or administrative mishandling. Disaster is when the incompetent politicians have already manipulated and taken advantage of the voters’ low turnout. Publicity by the biased media becomes problematic, as it sends wrong signal resulting in adversely affecting a good candidate. Misinformation is unfair, as it would not help the public choose the right candidates for the right job. That will be waste of time and money – adding to the financial strain on all concerned. It’s a bitter reality that some wrong elements in the media focus only on the negative actions of politicians, such as scandals, and ignore the “contribution” of such good candidates. Such a biased attitude is dangerous enough to turn the voters off. And, there are always many students who are of the opinion that keeping up with election coverage is a waste of time for a variety of reasons, the
most popular being that students never see the benefits of any election outcome. Here media has to play a positive role. Nevertheless, having been inspired by late Jack Layton, a large number of Canadian youth jumped into the arena of politics, the younger voters still need encouragement to get involved with the political process at all levels by joining the political institutions. As no immediate fruits of such participation are seen, so many citizens are not convinced enough. The government must take some steps to educate the student community to enhance their sense of civic responsibility that would encourage the youth to get out and vote. Clearly, by not voting, we actually break the connection between individual Canadians and their community. A democratic community can only survive if its citizens participate in the political process under all circumstances. And, this electoral process connects us to one another as citizens, as well as by expressing our opinion we actually help maintain our democratic order. Certainly, the democracy would be dead if no one comes out to vote. Therefore, a democracy by its very nature needs the participation of the people, otherwise there is no democracy. Therefore, it’s of extreme importance to make your voice heard through casting a ballot for the candidate of your independent choice. Not voting clearly equals nothing but “stupid silence” allowing the crooks to grab positions of political importance. A crook and incompetent person should never be allowed

to serve the community. Yet, in the absence of voicing your opinion through polls, there is your silence which becomes a contributory negligence as the right people for the right job couldn’t have been elected; thus, depriving the community of competent office holders. Now, you can’t complain about what you already have allowed by not showing up. A vote was your voice, which you lost by ignoring your own legal right of voting. Agreement or disagreement is immaterial after it’s all over. Also, voting is a responsibility and a duty. It also gives you power, because you become involved as a participant. It’s encouraging to note that even the “chamber of commerce” demands municipal voting rights be extended to businesses. Most importantly, there is absolutely no excuse for not voting, as a lot of flexibility is available to facilitate the potential voter. As there is always a big price tag attached - to carry out the democratic process aimed at selecting the federal, provincial or city’s political representatives, the tax payers must think twice before voting for the wrong person or staying silent by not taking part at all in the political process during election tim

Surrey, municipal election seen as chance to clean up crime, but not everyone agrees there is a problem SURREY,
L i n d a Hepner is a veteran Surrey councillor who aims to become this city’s new mayor, when municipal elections are held next week across B.C. One of her strategies, it seems, is to downplay concerns that this sprawling, fast-growing city south of Vancouver is losing its battle against crime. “There is nothing the matter with Surrey,” she said Tuesday night, while debating local issues with her two main opponents. Some audience members groaned. There’s nothing wrong in Surrey, goodness knows, except for the shootings and stabbings and kidnappings and assaults that make its longstanding reputation as an auto-theft centre seem, by comparison, almost benign. The fact is, something is the matter. Consider the latest events. Two workers were stabbed at a local restaurant Sunday; their suspected assailant ran away. Two men were sent to hospital last week with serious gunshot wounds. A notorious drug dealer was found dead in his home late last month, the city’s 13th homicide of the year. Local sex-trade workers were put on notice after two sexual assaults were reported in October. Earlier last month, four suspects were named in a violent home invasion and shooting. The city is still reeling over the slaying of 17-year-old student Serena Vermeersch,
whose body was found mid-September, just eight blocks from a local RCMP detachment. And Surrey still mourns Julie Paskall, the popular volunteer and “hockey mom” who was attacked and killed outside a local arena 11 months ago, while waiting for her son to finish refereeing a hockey game. Ms. Paskall’s alleged killer, Yosef Gopaul, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in May. The Paskall murder was Surrey’s 25th in 2013, a new record. And it demolished the notion that the city had, under Mayor Dianne Watts, somehow turned the page on its long history of violence. Ms. Watts is given credit for helping bring new investment, real estate development and public infrastructure projects to Surrey; however, while incidents of violent crime have dipped during her nine years in office as mayor, the overall crime rate has remained high. (Ms. Watts announced in September that she is leaving municipal politics to seek the federal Conservative party nomination in a Surrey-area riding.) According to polls, crime is the greatest worry for Surrey residents, by far. That makes Ms. Hepner’s comment at Tuesday’s debate all the more curious, and explains why her two main rivals have made hitting back against thugs their campaign cris de coeur.
Doug McCallum
was Surrey mayor for two difficult terms until 2005, when he was pushed out by Ms. Watts. He now leads the Surrey Safe Coalition. There’s no mistaking his intentions. If elected mayor, he says, he’ll have the city hire 95 additional police officers in 2015. Easier said than done; Surrey has no municipal police force of its own and relies instead on the RCMP, which determines where and how to deploy its resources.
Barinder Rasode, who also campaigns on an anticrime, clean-it-up platform. “One Tough Mother,” she calls herself. Ms. Rasode says she’s “fed up” with the status quo in Surrey and with the city’s bad reputation, which, she admits, it has earned. First elected to Surrey council in 2008, she sat alongside Ms. Hepner and Ms. Watts on the same Surrey First slate. After Ms. Paskall was murdered, Ms. Rasode recalls, she decided to “stand up and speak out” about Surrey’s crime problem. She complained that the mayor and her administration weren’t doing enough to address it. “Two weeks before Julie Paskall died, [the city] knew that the [recreational centre where the murder occurred] wasn’t safe,” Ms. Rasode claims, suggesting the murder might never have happened had the public
been warned. One after-the-fact response, she recalls with a disapproving frown, was to warn women in Surrey not to wear jewellery in public. Her outspokenness didn’t sit well with others; Ms. Rasode says she was shunned by her fellow councillors. So she decided to form her own municipal slate and go after the top job. Ms. Rasode has a comprehensive, 10-point plan to combat crime. If elected, she promises to create a 200-person team of “community safety officers,” men and women who would function like regular police officers, but without firearms. They would respond to non-violent calls, such as traffic accidents and break-ins, leaving Surrey’s RCMP members more time to respond to serious crimes. If her proposed 200 new officers aren’t on the ground working within a year of her election, Ms. Rasode says she’ll take a 10% pay cut as mayor. Some call her crime-fighting pledges crass opportunism. One Tough Mother says she doesn’t care. Surrey needs a shot in the arm, and a kick in the rear. Source : National Post

YOU HAVE A CHOICE IN THIS ELECTION But, Only One Puts Surrey First! The Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC) belongs to the people of Surrey. It develops city-owned land and pays a dividend to our city that helps fund more police, parks, pools, arts facilities, and community rec centres. It also puts the interests of Surrey residents ahead of developers. Doug McCallum wants to eliminate the Surrey City Development Corporation. Linda Hepner and the Surrey First Team say he’s wrong.
Here’s What the Choice Means KEEP – SCDC
ELIMINATE – SCDC [ Selling off public land to developers is shortsighted [ Millions in revenues to the city will be gone [ Reduces funding for new police [ Reduces funding for new parks, pools, community and rec centres
Protects Surrey’s lands in perpetuity Surrey’s residents come first as we invest in our community Provides valuable revenue stream to the City Keeps property taxes lowest in the region More money for new police More money for new parks, pools, community and rec centres
On November 15, don’t turn back the clock. Keep Surrey moving forward.
Vote for Linda Hepner and the Surrey First Team.

A D FVAE I RT THI S E R Volume 1, Book 8, Number 456:Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: “Allah’s Apostle in his fatal illness came out with a piece of cloth tied round his head and sat on the pulpit. After thanking and praising Allah he said, “There is no one who had done more favor to me with life and property than Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa. If I were to take a Khalil, I would certainly have taken Abu- Bakr but the Islamic brotherhood is superior. Close all the small doors in this mosque except that of Abu Bakr.”
Hazrat Omar bin Khattab(RA) The Second Caliph of Islam Full name: `Umar ibn alKhattab Born: 581 AD Mecca, Saudi Arabia Reign as Caliph: 634 – 644 AD (10 and a half years) Titles: Amir al-Mu’minin Al-Farooq (The Distinguisher between Truth and Falsehood)
Died: Muharram, 24 A.H. (644 AD), Saudi Arabia (Age:63 years) Buried: Al-Masjid al-Nabawi, Medina Early Life: The mission of the Holy Prophet was still in the early stage. Islam was still weak and helpless. The chiefs of Mecca were up against it. One night the Holy Prophet stood in the Kaaba, lost in thoughts. Presently he raised his hands and turned his eyes heavenward. “O,Allah!” he prayed, “make Islam strong with either of the two men, Amr bin Hisham or Omar bin Khattab.” The prayer was instantly granted. Allah chose Omar to serve Islam and to become a great pillar of strength for Islam. Omar was twelve years younger than the Holy Prophet. He was the son of Khattab. His mother’s name was Khatmah. He came of the Adi branch of the Quraish. In early youth, Omar got training in methods of warfare and the
art of public speaking. From the outset, he showed unusual courage and frankness of manner. These qualities won him a name in the country rather at an early age. Acceptance Of Islam: Omar was twenty seven when the Holy Prophet began his mission. Young Omar was one of those who did not care to listen to the message of Islam. In the sixth year of the Mission, a number of Muslims left for Abyssinia. This made Omar boil with rage. “Here is a man,” he thought to himself “who has split the people. People lived smoothly enough. He appeared on the scene He has torn son from father and brother from brother. Now his followers are running away to another land. Surely Muhammad is the cause of all trouble. I must slay him and put an end to the trouble.” With this resolve Omar drew his sword and set out to kill the Holy Prophet. On the way he met a friend who asked him why he looked so upset. Omar told him what he was going to do. “You better take care of your own kin first,” said the friend, “Your sister and her husband have gone over to Islam.” These words changed the direction of Omar’s anger. He went straight to the house of his sister, Fatima. He knocked at the door. Someone was reciting the Quran inside. Fatima was terrified when she heard Omar’s voice. She hid the portion of the Quran she was reading and opened the door. “I have heard it alright. I know you both have accepted Muhammad’s faith.” Saying this, he began to beat his brother-in-law, Saeed. Fatima ran to his

help and got a blow to the head. The head began to bleed. This made the couple bold. “Yes, we have become Muslims,” they shouted at Omar. “Do what you will.” “Would you let me have a look at the Quran?” said Omar. Fatima handed him the few pages of the book she had. Omar sat down to study the pages. Soon his face changed. His anger cooled down. The fear of Allah gripped his heart. He wept and declared, “Surely this is the word of Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah.” Omar was again on his way to the place of the Holy Prophet. But he was now a changed man. He was not going to slay him but to embrace his faith. The Holy Prophet was sitting in the company of some men. He saw Omar coming and asked, “Omar, what brings you here?” “O Prophet of Allah!” replied Omar, “I have come to embrace Islam.” It was a great day for Islam because one of its bitterest enemies had become its staunch follower. The Title of Farooq: The coming over of Omar made a difference for Islam. Hitherto, the Muslims had lived in constant fear of the non-believers. They could not say their prayers publicly. The first thing Omar did was to call together the chiefs of Mecca. Before this gathering he declared himself a follower of Islam. They started at him in silence. No one had the courage to utter a word of reproach. Omar next requested the Holy Prophet to say prayers in the Kaaba. He himself led a party of Muslims to that place. A second party was led by Hamza. When all had gathered, they said their prayers in congregation. The Holy Prophet led the prayer. This was the first prayer of its kind said in the Kaaba. When migration to Medina started, the same thing happend again. Most of the Muslims left Mecca silently and secretly. But Omar went to the Kaaba and said his prayer. The chiefs of Mecca looked at him in silence. After the prayer, he shouted out to them, “I am leaving for Medina. If anyone wants to stop me let him meet me across the valley. His mother shall certainly have to weep for him in sorrow.” Despite this challenge, no Meccan would dare to stop Omar. These things earned for Omar the title of Farooq(One who Distinguishes between Right and Wrong.)” Farooq is the one who makes a difference. Omar’s acceptance of Islam had made a big difference for Islam and Muslims. Devotion to the Prophet: Omar stood by the side of the Prophet in all battles and expeditions. Great was his love for Allah and His Apostle. He never allowed any blood ties or friendship to stand in the way of this love. The death of the Prophet was a stunning shock to Omar. He could not believe it, so much so that he drew his sword and swore that he would cut off the head of the man who said the Messenger of Allah was dead. He was overwhelmed with grief. Life without the Prophet was unthinkable, he
thought. Not till Abu Bakr had reminded him of the clear verdict of the Quran on the point did he come to himself. Time as Caliph: Omar was Caliph for ten and a half years. This period stands out as the golden age of Islam. The tender plant which the Holy Prophet left behind and Abu Bakr had protected against storms grew into a huge overspreading tree under Omar’s untiring care. Islam became a world power. Omar had made Islam strong and great! Thereby he had also made his own name immortal. During his Khilaafat, vast areas of the Roman and Persian empires and the whole of Egypt were brought under Islamic rule. He was also a gifted orator. He was very concerned for the welfare of the Muslims. He left a honourable legacy for Muslims after him. Omar’s armies overthrew two mighty empires of the time. Once Omar appeared before the court of Medina. The judge stood up to show respect to the Caliph as he entered the court. Modern democratic states have yet to reach this level of democracy. He established the “Baitul Maal” (People’s treasury for the state and public). Simplicity and devotion were the main characters of Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu). He used to wear clothes that had many patches and yet received Governors, convoys and diplomats. He took just enough allowance from the State to have a simple meal and wear simple clothes Death: There lived in Medina a Persian slave, Abu Lolo Firoz by name. One day, he came to the Calpih and said, “My master squeezes too heavy a tax out of me. Please get it reduced.” How much is the tax?” asked Omar. Two dirhams a day,” replied the slave. And what skills do you posses?” was the next question of the Caliph. I am a carpentar, a painter, and a black-smith,” Firoz said. Then the tax is by no means too heavy,” the Calpih remarked. “A person with your skills can easy pay this tax and shall live comfortably.” All right, I will settle with you,” grunted the slave as he went away. Early next morning Omar went to the mosque as usual to lead the prayer. Abu Lolo was already hiding in the corner, with a dagger in hand. As soon as Omar began the prayer, the slave jumped on him. He gave six cuts with the dagger on the Caliph’s body. “Who is my assasin?” he asked. “Abu Lolo,” said the people. “Allah be thanked!” said Omar. “It is not a Muslim who has shed my blood.” Finding his end in sight, Omar called his son, Abdullah. My son,” he said, “go to Aisha. Give her Omar’s greetings. Do not refer to me as the Commander of the Faithful; for I am no longer one. Place before her my wish to be buried in her room, by the side of the Prophet and my illustrious predecessor.” Abdullah found Aisha weeping. He delivered his father’s message to her. I wanted to reserve this spot for my own grave, but I prefer Omar to myself,” said Aisha. Abdullah conveyed Aisha’s consent to his dying father. Allah be thanked!” said Omar. “This was the greatest wish of my life. But look, son, when you take my dead body to Aisha’s room, again give her my greetings and ask her permission. If she allows, bury me there, otherwise bury me in the graveyard of Medina.”

Syria ‘seriously studying’ UN truce proposal
The Syrian government has responded with “constructive interest” to the UN proposal to suspend fighting in the city of Aleppo, according to Staffan de Mistura, the UN special envoy. His public call for a ceasefire came a day after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said the suggestion was “worth studying”. “My meetings here with the government and with President Bashar al- Assad gave me the feeling that they are studying very seriously and very actively the UN proposal,” De Mistura said in Damascus on Tuesday. De Mistura, at the beginning of his three-day visit to Syria, said the UN was now waiting for contact with the other stake-holders. There has been no response from groups on the other side of the conflict, who remain an important player in the “action plan” put forward by De Mistura. Assad said on Monday that he was ready to study the UN plan to freeze fighting in Aleppo, a city divided since the major offensive in mid-2012 between government and rebel control. De Mistura set out the plan last month that would allow humanitarian aid through and will lay the groundwork for peace talks. In the plan he called Aleppo a “good candidate” for such a freeze in the fighting. “All Syrians need a concrete example. ... That’s why we have come to the conclusion of making a specific proposal.” he said. De Mistura stressed that the plan is not yet a peace plan but could be an incentive to move in that direction. Aleppo was chosen because of its importance as Syria’s second city. It was once the country’s industrial powerhouse, and a place of cultural and
historical significance. “Aleppo city is not far from possible collapse and we need to do something before that happens. People in Aleppo are tired, everybody runs all day just to find bread. They only have food aid, donated baskets,’’ De Mistura said. Aleppo is also the last major city where rebels hold large areas, but they are under attack from advancing government forces. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has been trying to take nearby rebel-held communities and activists fear they will try and advance on to Aleppo. Many activists said the UN’s efforts may be too late because of the damage done during three years of war. But Mohammed al-Shafi, an activist from Aleppo, said if the government agreed to a truce, residents would pressure rebels to follow suit. More than 195,000 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011, several internationally backed negotiations were attempted but have failed to bring the rival sides to an agreement. Against this backdrop, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the ruler of Qatar, an important US ally, cautioned on Tuesday that the ongoing air strikes against ISIL were not enough to defeat “terrorism and extremism” in Iraq and Syria. He urged the international community to take action against the factors fuelling radicalism there. He specifically blamed the policies of Assad and “some militias in Iraq” - in an indirect reference to Iranian-backed armed Shia groups - for the rise of ISIL. Source: Al-Jazeera
NATO Says: Continued from pg 1
been withdrawn. But now with tensions renewed, NATO’s Supreme Commander in Europe General Philip Breedlove has confirmed that over the past two days, NATO has seen columns of Russian armour, artillery and crucially - combat troops - entering Ukraine. The question now is whether this is just a re-run of events in the summer or does a more significant clash beckon, perhaps one where the Kremlin may decide - in its terms - to teach the Ukrainians a military lesson. General Breedlove also confirmed that NATO believes Russia is deploying nuclear-capable weapons to Crimea - a reference to reports that Russia is deploying short-range Iskander ballistic missiles there that could potentially be equipped with nuclear warheads. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has reported seeing unmarked convoys in the region in recent days. This was confirmed by US Gen Breedlove on Wednesday, who said
“Russian tanks, Russian artillery, Russian air defence systems and Russian combat troops” had been sighted. Gen Breedlove, talking to reporters on a visit to Bulgaria, said the alleged Russian troop deployment may be intended to reinforce “pockets” under separatist control in eastern Ukraine. This could, he said, help them to form “a more contiguous, more whole and capable pocket of land in order to then hold on to it long term”. He did not specify how many troops, vehicles or weapons were seen. A NATO official confirmed to the BBC that NATO had “assessed” that the equipment and troops were Russian in origin. In a separate statement, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said any significant military build-up would be “a severe threat to the ceasefire”, which was agreed in Minsk on 5 September. However, Russian defence official Maj-Gen Igor Konashenkov said “there was and is no evidence” to support
Abbas says Israel igniting ‘religious war’
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has accused Israel of igniting a “religious war” by allowing Jewish worshippers to visit an Islamic holy site in occupied Jerusalem. Speaking at a ceremony on Tuesday in the West Bank city of Ramallah marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Abbas said the visits by the Jewish worshippers were provocative and that Palestinian worshippers would defend the site. His remarks came as Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian demonstrator in clashes near the southern West Bank city of Hebron. Imad Jawabreh, 21, was hit in the chest by bullets on Tuesday, Palestinian medics said, adding that the shooting occurred on a main road at al-Arroub refugee camp. The official Palestinian news agency reported that a Palestinian man was shot in the chest and died while standing on the second floor of his house. An Israeli military spokeswoman in Tel Aviv said soldiers opened fire when a protester pointed an “improvised weapon” at them. Al Jazeera’s Imtiaz Tyab, reporting from West Jerusalem, said: “This attack comes after a tense day in the occupied Palestinian territories and in Israel as well.” In his speech, Abbas addressed the clashes which have gripped East Jerusalem for the past four months and spoke about unrest at al-Aqsa Mosque compound prompted by the demands of ultra-conservative Jewish fringe groups for the right to pray there. Jews are allowed to visit the site but they are not supposed to pray there. An increase in the number of visits has raised Muslim fears that Israel is plotting to take over the site and prompted clashes. The Palestinians “will defend al-Aqsa and the churches against the settlers and extremists”, Abbas said. He also reaffirmed his plans to submit a draft resolution to the UN Secu-
rity Council later this month calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories by November 2016. He promised that the Palestinians, who won the UN rank of observer state in 2012, would apply to join a host of international organisations if the resolution was blocked by a US veto. “We will not tolerate any pressure,” Abbas said, referring to US efforts to dissuade the Palestinians from approaching the Security Council. In his speech, Abbas also accused Hamas, the Palestinian group which governs the Gaza Strip, of trying “to destroy” efforts to broker national unity through a series of bomb blasts in the territory last week. Abbas said Hamas - which quickly dismissed his allegations as “lies” - was behind the Gaza explosions which targeted leaders of his Fatah, Hamas’s rival. The blasts prompted the cancellation of a rare memorial service in Gaza for Arafat, who died in mysterious circumstances in a hospital near Paris in 2004. “Those who caused the explosions in Gaza are the leaders of Hamas - they are responsible,” Abbas said in his remarks, accusing Hamas of trying “to sabotage and destroy the Palestinian national project”. Earlier this year, Fatah and Hamas signed a reconciliation agreement aimed at ending seven years of bitter and sometimes bloody rivalry which saw the West Bank and Gaza ruled by separate administrations. The deal led to the creation of a government of national consensus which took office in Ramallah but has yet to fully exert its powers in Gaza. Following Abbas’s speech, Hamas denounced him as “sectarian and partisan”. “Abbas’s speech is web of lies, insults and disinformation,” Mushir al-Masri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, said. “What the Palestinian people need is a courageous president.” Source: Al-Jazeera
Gen Breedlove’s claims. Russia has consistently denied sending troops and equipment to support the rebels fighting in eastern Ukraine. However, the rebels have admitted being helped by “volunteers” from Russia. Separately, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the country’s longrange aircraft would go on patrol flights over the Arctic Ocean to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. He said that the current situation required Russia to restart the flights, which were cut at the end of the Cold War. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s defence minister has said that government forces are redeploying in preparation for a possible new offensive by pro-Russian separatist rebels. “The main task I see is to prepare for combat operations. We are doing this, we are readying our reserves,” Stepan Poltorak told a government meeting. The UN’s assistant secretary general, Jens Anders ToybergFrandzen, later warned of the possibility “of
a return to full-scale fighting” in Ukraine, speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Wednesday. More than 4,000 people have died since government forces moved in April to put down an armed insurrection by the rebels in the two regions, which border Russia. Hundreds of people have been killed since a fragile truce was agreed three months ago. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday her government was “not satisfied” with the progress in implementing the Minsk agreement, but added that there were no plans at present for further economic sanctions against Russia over its involvement in Ukraine. “Further economic sanctions are not planned at the moment, we are focusing on the winter and the humanitarian situation there and how to get a real ceasefire,” she said. The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) held a big celebration at its new center in New Westminster on Saturday, November 1st to celebrate the arrival of the new Hijri year 1436 and the grand opening of its new Musalla located at 553 Front Street, New Westminster, BC More than 300 attendees gathered to enjoy listening to recitation from the honorable Holy Qur’an followed by Islamic chanting which consisted of praising Allah ta^ala and His Messenger Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. The first speech was given by AICP director of British Columbia, Mazen Turk, welcoming the audience and thanking everyone who assisted at any capacity during the renovation of this new building – “We ask Allah tabaraka wa ta^ala to reward those who contributed to the building of this new Musalla with good deeds so they will be delighted to see this success in their book of deeds on the Day of Judgment.”
The beautiful and captivating melodies of the AICP Chanting Group filled the hearts and air with joy and delight as the love and longing for the Messenger of Allah and Mecca increased with every song. His Eminence Shaykh Gilles Sadeq congratulated AICP members for their tremendous achievements, beautified the event with the captivating Sirah (biography) of the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam as he connected it all to the caliphs and the death of our Master al-Husayn peace be upon him. Shaykh Gilles stressed the importance of fasting on the Anniversary of the 10th day of Muharram, as our Prophet urged his nation to practice this. However, fasting this occasion is not to commemorate the death of al-Husayn since this came before the death of the Prophet. Shaykh Gilles shed light on numerous historical events that took place on this occasion; and noting that Ahlus-Sunnah has deep love for our Master al-Husayn and Ahlul-Bayt

Martyrs of Karbala remembered at Masjid Anwar-e- Madina
On Nov, 8 Masjid Anwar-e-Madina, organized a program in the memory of Martyrs of Karbala (Yaad -e-Shohadae-Karbala) in Surrey. Syed Afroz Dean was the master of ceremony. The program started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz Mohammad Farooq. Some Naat-e-rasool Maqbools and Manajats were recited by the local Naat-Khuwans. While conducting the program, Syed Afroz explained many incidents according to the topic of the evening with references from Holy Quran and Sunnah in English. Syed Imroz Dean Saifi, the local Imam and speaker of Masjid Anwar e Madina, expressed his thoughts on the topic of martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and presented his spiritual speech in Urdu language in the light of the Holy Quran and Sunnah. He said Hzt. Imam Hussain(R.A) gave this sacrifice and explained that it was to teach the lesson of Truth and act on the path of Dean (religion) in front of Yazeed. ). He mentioned how the residents of Kufa invited Imam Hussain by sending thousands of messages, and even companions of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) who were alive at that time requested Imam Hussain (R.A) not to go there as they
It started with the recitation of Holy Quran followed by the Salwat and Hadiya Naat Shreef. Many famous Naat Reciters of Lower mainland participated and recited Naat Shreef and Manaqabat of Imam Hussein. A Heart warming and full of angelic tamale, Zikr was lead by As Syed Nurjan of Naqashbandi Vancouver Center. After Zikr, Sheykh Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jammah As Syed Nurjan Mirahmadi did a heart opening speech enriching souls with divine realities. Syed Nurjan addressed the audience and explained the importance of Obeying Allah, Obeying Prophet and Obeying People of Authority. He Explained the Beautiful Hadith of Islam, Iman, Ehsan and how it relates to the struggle of Syedna Muhammad (PBUH) in Makkah and then Hijrah to Madina Munawarh and then coming
had treated Imam Hussain’s father, Ali (R.A) in almost the same way. After many request from the residents of Kufa, Imam Hussain(R.A)sent his messenger Muslim Bin Aqeel to Koofa, and after assurance from almost 30 thousand believers, Imam left for Kufa. A true believer is always ready to give sacrifice. Some scholars says that this battle was for the Power transfer, some have soft corner for Yazeed that is not true. It was a battle to keep the dean of Imam Hussain (R.A)’s grandfather alive. Allah knows better what is in and out of his believers. Imam Saifi requested that you act on the path of Imam teachings practically and not just verbally but by your actions and understand why the Martyrs of Karbala held with only 72 followers of Imam Hussain(R.A) with 22 thousands of Yazeedi lashker. After the speech by Syed Imroz Dean, a guest speaker from Sydney(Australia) Mr. Mohammad Farhan Khan spooked on the Karbala topic. He recited some verses of the Holy Quran and the Hadiths and emphasized that the month of Muharram is very important. Only commemoration of this day is not sufficient. We have to act for good deeds in the lights of Imam Hussain (R.A) teachings. At the end Duaa made and then Darood-o-Salam was recited.
back to Makkah and Conquering it without any bloodshed. Syed Nurjan reminded every one to struggle against their bad characters and get cure and help from Syedna Muhammad (PBUH) by reciting Darood shareef upon him. The guest speaker Peer Afzal talked about the great sacrifice of Imam AAli Muqam Hazrat Imam Hussein Aleh Assalam and shuhday Karbala. He talked about the love of Prophet PBUH towards Imam Hussein and quoted the famous Hadith of “Hussein is from me and I am from Hussein”. He enforced the necessity of loving the Family of Holy Prophet and making the Hub-e-Rasool a part of our Iman. Syed Nurjan presented a huge Wall Hanging Caligraphy “Muhammad” to the president of Fiji Islamic Center Mr Aseem Akhtar Khan to show his love to ahl-e-sunnah wal

16 M I D D L E What I saw in Gaza? Muharrum 21, 1436H November 14, 2014
By: Inger Andersen Last week, I visited the Palestinian territories. I wanted to hear firsthand from the people of Gaza and understand the scope and magnitude of the recent conflict. I am now back from Gaza with a prevailing feeling of disbelief and sadness. Throughout my career at the World Bank, and at the United Nations or even before, I have come across many war zones but none compare to what I have just seen in Gaza: no scene of destruction, desolation and despair I have witnessed is equal to the tragic stage of Gaza. Today, I feel obliged to add my voice for the voiceless and to plead that none of us forget the Palestinian people. It is our collective and historic responsibility to step up support and mobilise a response commensurate to the needs of the Palestinian people. As development professionals, we deplore the level of violence and destruction and urge all sides to make determined efforts to find a permanent end to these recurrent hostilities, whether incursions, missile attacks or bombings. This will require access to imports and freedom of movement in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as mutual assurance of security in both Palestinian territories and Israel. Our response needs to address both the urgency of now - the humanitarian imperative - and to pave the way for a sustainable development of the Palestinian economy - the development imperative.
Humanitarian tragedy The conflict and humanitarian tragedy in Gaza has made an already struggling Palestinian economy worse and put further stress on the fiscal situation of the Palestinian Authority. Recession hit the Palestinian territories in the first quarter of 2014, with levels of consumption and donor assistance declining significantly. Donors’ assistance in the first half of 2014 has fallen by more than $200m compared to 2013. The economic decline has resulted in grow-
E A S T
ing unemployment: one in six in the West Bank, and nearly every second person in Gaza. Poverty has reached 26 percent and is twice as high in Gaza than in the West Bank. Growth increases when restrictions ease. As documented in last year’s World Bank report: Area C and the Future of the Palestinian Economy, political uncertainty and restrictions on movement and access are the main reasons why the Palestinian economy is unable to take off. The Bank estimates that $3bn is lost annually due to restrictions imposed on 60 percent of the West Bank (the so-called Area C). Even before the conflict, these constraints were more binding in Gaza, where the economy suffered from recurring violence as well as blockades on exports and imports and where two-thirds of the population was receiving food assistance. Because growth increases when restrictions ease, and inversely, growth slows when restrictions are greater, the ongoing negotiation between Israel and the Palestinians on the new mechanism allowing construction materials to go into Gaza is a step in the right direction. But it is only an inch in a journey of miles. I am convinced that the World Bank Group can play a transformational role in the Palestinian territories, as it should in most fragile and conflict affected settings. As a development institution, it is both a mandate and a responsibility. Since the Oslo Accords, the World Bank Group has provided nearly $1bn and has leveraged four times more. Our Board of Directors recently approved additional support, and we will be front-loading a $62m emergency package consisting of budget support and investment projects in such key sectors as water, electricity and municipal services. These are areas where the needs are immense and where the Bank Group has a competitive edge.
Budget support But more is needed. As discussed with Finance Minister Shukri Bisharra, budget support is essential to ensure institutional strengthening and provision of services. More is needed to anchor reforms and services and sustain a viable economy. The two pillars of the Bank Group strategy are effectively designed to contribute to respond to this challenge: Strengthen the institutions of a future state to ensure service delivery to citizens; and support private sector-led growth that increases employment opportunities. An economy cannot live under siege, nor can the tragic cycle of destruction -reconstruction be sustained. It is not too early to strengthen the institutions that will eventually contribute to greater peace and security. For the Palestinians struggling daily, equally critical is the access to water, electricity and municipal services. I saw the destroyed water reservoir in Al Monttar area (Shujayea) which would have serviced 250,000 people. I walked into the shell-struck electricity storage facility that now resembled a lunar landscape. While visiting al-Shifa hospital, I discussed with doctors the dire need for medical equipment and supplies, staff and fuel, all severely strained by shortages and outages. Numbers fail to capture the human realities of the daunting scenes I witnessed at the hospital. As winter sets in, the partial or total destruction of 60,000 housing units has led to 100,000 people without shelter. On October 12, the international community came together in Cairo to voice strong support for the Palestinians and for the reconstruction of Gaza, and pledged resources. This is encouraging but we need to ensure that these are new resources and are effectively committed and disbursed in order to mitigate the tragic impact of the Gaza conflict and to unleash the economic potential of the Palestinian territories. In cooperation with the Palestinian Authority (PA), and in coordination with the EU, UN and other international partners, the
World Bank Group intends to play its full role and assist the Palestinians in mobilising the resources with a view to short and long term needs. Unfulfilled promises are a sword of Damocles. An economy cannot live under siege, nor can the tragic cycle of destructionreconstruction be sustained. It is not too early to strengthen the institutions that will eventually contribute to greater peace and security. It is not too late to ensure a viable economy that will foster a just and sustainable development for all Palestinians. Because Palestinians have often given the region its tempo and have always served as a cause or as an excuse, because Palestinians are on the cutting edge of Arab minds and of the world’s collective imagination, and because Palestinians will remain at the heart of the Middle East, a breakthrough on the path of stability and prosperity would have far-reaching consequences and a positive impact on the rest of the region. Would it not be the best way to fight sectarianism, violence and extremism? I’m just back from Gaza and this is still my hope. Inger Andersen is responsible for World Bank strategy and operations throughout the Middle East and North Africa region. She assumed her position shortly after the start of the Arab Spring and led the realignment of Bank engagement with the region to meet emerging needs and priorities. Courtesy: Al Jazeerah

When Healthy Eating Calls For Treatment
A Desire to Eat ‘Clean’ Food Can Become an Obsession By Sumathi Reddy The growing interest in eating healthy can at times have unhealthy consequences. Some doctors and registered dietitians say they are increasingly seeing people whose desire to eat pure or “clean” food—from raw vegans to those who cut out multiple major food sources such as gluten, dairy and sugar—becomes an all-consuming obsession and leads to ill health. In extreme cases, people will end up becoming malnourished. Some experts refer to the condition as orthorexia nervosa, a little-researched disorder that doesn’t have an official diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, considered the bible of psychiatric illnesses. Often, individuals with orthorexia will exhibit symptoms of recognized conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder or end up losing unhealthy amounts of weight, similar to someone with anorexia. Researchers in Colorado recently proposed a series of criteria they say could help clinicians diagnose orthorexia. The guidelines, published online in the journal Psychosomatics earlier this year, also could serve as a standard for future research of the disorder, they say. Some Diets That Might Leave Out Nutrients DAIRY-FREE Pro: Some people feel better when avoiding dairy even if aren’t truly allergic. Challenge: Make sure to get calcium, phosphorus and potassium from other foods. iStockphoto/Getty Images RAW VEGAN Pro: Plant-based diets are nutritious and are associated with lower rates of obesity and chronic disease. Challenge: Some vitamins, especially B12, are mostly in animal products. Cooking can make some nutrients more bio available. JUICING DIETS, CLEANSES Pro: If used short term to kick start eating more fruits and vegetables, this diet can be acceptable. Challenge: Juices aren’t nutritionally complete. And cleansing is a misnomer as your body is ‘cleansed’ by the kidneys, digestive tract and lungs. GLUTEN-FREE Pro: Gluten is a must avoid for people with an allergy. Those who are sensitive may find they feel much better. Challenge: A complete diet can be achieved with energy- and nutrient-rich foods such as non-wheat grains. Ryan Moroze, a psychiatry fellow at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and senior author of the study, said more research needs to be done to develop a valid screening instrument for orthorexia, determine its prevalence and differentiate it from other more well-known
eating disorders. “There are people who become malnourished, not because they’re restricting how much they eat, it’s what they’re choosing to eat,” said Thomas Dunn, a psychologist and psychology professor at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., and a co-author of the article. “It’s not that they’re doing it to get thin, they’re doing it to get healthy. It’s just sort of a mindset where it gets taken to an extreme like what we see with other kinds of mental illness,” Dr. Dunn said. Among the proposed criteria: an obsession with the quality and composition of meals to the extent that people may spend excessive amounts of time, say three or more hours a day, reading about and preparing specific types of food; and having feelings of guilt after eating unhealthy food. The preoccupation with such eating would have to either lead to nutritional imbalances or interfere with daily functional living to be considered orthorexia. Some orthorexia patients are receiving treatments similar to those for obsessive-compulsive disorder. “We’re getting the people who aren’t being treated well under an eating-disorder diagnosis and their disorder is better treated under the OCD dial,” said Kimberley Quinlan, clinical director of the OCD Center of Los Angeles, an outpatient clinic. The condition seems to start with an interest in living healthy and then, over time, people develop an increased anxiety about eating food that is contaminated or that they deem unhealthy, said Ms. Quinlan. Treatment often involves cognitive behavioral therapy, a type of psychotherapy aiming at behavior modification. “We’ve basically taken a model that we use to treat OCD and applied it to this disorder which is so similar,” she said. Experts say there is a gray area between striving to eat healthy and going to the extreme, which helps to spur skepticism about orthorexia. “People don’t believe how eating healthy can be a disorder,” said Ms. Quinlan. Sometimes other illnesses can lead to orthorexia. David Rakel, director of integrative medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, estimated that 10% to 15% of the patients who come in with food allergies and related problems develop an unhealthy fear of particular foods. Nutritional therapy often involves elimination diets—stopping to eat certain foods to check if they are contributing to an inflammatory condition, Dr. Rakel said. Under the program, the foods are later gradually reintroduced, but some people continue to avoid them. “People are getting so strict with their health choices that they’re not getting the nutrients that they need,” he said. Some eating-disorder therapists say many of the
orthorexia patients they treat also suffer from anorexia. But other experts say orthorexics often aren’t underweight, which can make it difficult to identify them. “Someone on paper may be perfectly healthy and their blood work is great and their weight is fine but their behavior has become obsessive with food,” said Marjorie Nolan Cohn, a New York City-based dietitian and national spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a professional organization. A red flag is when someone’s eating habits are making them avoid social engagements, Ms. Cohn said. “They may not be able to go out to a restaurant with their friends because they don’t know what’s in the food or it’s not cooked in a certain way or what if it’s not organic olive oil?” she said. Jordan Younger, 24, of Los Angeles, started a popular Instagram and blog last year to post
recipes and pictures from her plant-based vegan diet. Then her daily diet became allconsuming. “I would wake up in a panic thinking, ‘What am I going to eat today?’ ” said Ms. Younger. “I would go to a juice place or Whole Foods or a natural grocery store and would spend so much time in there looking at everything trying to plan out the whole day. It just began to take over my mind in a way that I started to see was unhealthy,” she said. “With all these different dietary philosophies, there’s a lot more room for orthorexia to develop,” she said. “It makes it really hard to eat if you’re listening to all these theories and it gives eating and food a ton of anxiety when really food should be enjoyable.” Courtesy: Wall Street Journal and Getty Images

L I F E S T Y L E
PRESS RELEASE The Halal Committee of The BC Muslim Association hereby announces that effective immediately, the name of
Success!
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Success can be a rather abstract term and it can mean very different to different people. Trying to define what success is not easy. To most people, success means achieving a goal. In order to achieve a goal, a person usually has to work hard and believe in themselves. Being successful at what you do can also be very motivating. People, who are successful in one project, tend to be more successful in other projects. This is because they get the feeling that their hard work pays off and that a goal is worth their time and effort. Success usually goes hand in hand with appreciation. If someone we know succeeds at what he or she does, we will most certainly congratulate them! This will make them feel good and motivate them even further. To some people, success means being the best at what they do. This means, that the requirements are even higher in order to succeed: just taking part and achieving good results is not enough. This attitude is especially true to sportsmanship. People who always want to be the best are usually more disappointed if they
ddo not achieve hi their h i goals. Another truth about success is that it can create envy. If you are good at what you do, others will want to be good at the same thing and if they are not as good as you, they will envy you. This means that success can create a bitter taste in your mouth because instead off being happy about your achievements, some people will be negative towards you. In this case, it is important not to forget thatt you have done well and that there are many other people who appreciate what you have done. Just think about it this way: if people envy you, you have done something good. And if you are lucky, the envious people will see your success as a means of motivation forr achieving their own goals. Success means more to some people than to others. Some want to be successful by all means while others are satisfied by simply trying and giving their best regardless of the end result. FOCUS
Iraq’s future: It’s the oil, stupid To predict whether Iraq will remain a country - or break apart - we need to look at the oil as well as ISIL. By Michael Knights This week, Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider alAbbadi is scheduled to visit Erbil, his first visit to the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as premier. The lead-up to the visit has been long and torturous, including months of speculation and tactical manoeuvring over the potential form of a revenue-sharing deal between Baghdad and the Kurds. Though less dramatic than the day-to-day fighting against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the outcome of these negotiations could do more to cement the unity of Iraq - or hasten its break-up - than events taking place on the battlefield. For almost a year now, the Kurds have lived without their customary budget transfers from Baghdad. In previous years, the Kurds received 17 percent of net revenues from Baghdad - around a billion dollars a month to cover $750m of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) salaries and pay for ministry programmes. This year, Iraqi Kurdistan has to reckon on hundreds of millions of dollars of additional costs each month to maintain full mobilisation of the Peshmerga to fight ISIL and to support nearly 1.4 million displaced Arabs, Kurds and minorities. In 2014, Baghdad has only paid about a month and a half of salaries, forcing the KRG to default on salaries despite taking out multibillion dollar loans. The region is now in debt to the tune of about $8bn. Though the Kurds are earning close to $450m of revenue from their independent oil sales via Turkey, the government in Ankara is only releasing 17 percent of KRG oil
revenues to the Kurds while negotiations with Baghdad are under way. This covers less than 10 percent of KRG costs. Two paths for the Kurds The situation can resolve in one of two ways. Iraq threatens legal action against any buyer of Kurdish oil. Abbadi and the Kurds could agree on a revenue-sharing deal that would be written into the 2015 budget and implemented for a year. The deal would involve a joint oil marketing arrangement between the Iraqi state and the Kurds, and a commitment of set volumes of KRG-produced oil exports in 2015. The Kurds would receive their oil revenues directly from international banks in a transparent process, and these revenues would be considered a partial advance on the KRG’s restored monthly payments from Baghdad. Such a deal could also allow Iraq to export 200,000-400,000 barrels per day of Kirkuk crude through the Kurds internal pipeline network. Due to ISIL’s destruction of much of the federal Iraqi government’s northern export infrastructure, the Kurds offer the only way for Iraq to monetise this oil in the coming years. Alternately, if Baghdad and the Kurds cannot agree on a deal, the KRG may continue down the path of independent oil exports via Turkey, without Baghdad’s cooperation. This path is choked with legal and political challenges and would eventually tear apart Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Baghdad would lose its northern export route for Kirkuk crude and collapsed talks might drive Turkey to release the full weight of KRG oil revenues to Erbil, speeding up Kurdish economic independence. For the Kurds, the independent export path represents a slow painful path to economic
self-sufficiency that could entail a year or more of deep recession, and would then only swap dependence on Baghdad for dependence on Ankara. Abbadi’s choice: Unite or split Iraq At this crucial time in Iraq’s history, only one factor is holding the country together: the wealth created by southern Iraq’s oil exports and how these funds will be distributed in the forthcoming 2015 budget. Federal government oil revenues are central to every major initiative to strengthen the country. The southern Shia provinces demand economic development through the payment of “petrodollars” to oil-producing provinces. The Sunni provinces want the federal government to fund the National Guard programme, to raise new US-trained military units to allow the Sunni areas to defeat ISIL and thereafter self-police. The Kurds view staying in Iraq as an economic necessity, for now, and their benefactor, Turkey, will push them to stay at the negotiating table with Baghdad as long as a deal is possible. All the factions will have to accept that Iraqi funds will be limited in 2015 due to declining oil prices and skyrocketing war costs. But all factions - including the Kurds - also need to be convinced that it is better to stay in Iraq than to go their own way. When the Iraqi government was formed, Baghdad promised to restore monthly payments to the Kurds and this should be done in mid-November, as a symbol of goodwill as negotiations start.
After a year of non-payment to the Kurds and months of non-payment to the ISILheld provinces, the federal government has the surplus money to restart payments. The basic truth is that “Sunni uprisings” and “Kurdish separatism” are not the key threats to Iraq’s unity. Iraq’s Shia are the only power with the ability to break up Iraq, and they can do it in a heartbeat if they decide to cut the Sunnis and the Kurds off from Basra’s oil wealth in 2015. For this reason, Abbadi holds the fate of a unified Iraq in his hands when he travels to Erbil. By paying Kurdish salaries in November and striking a fair revenue-sharing deal for 2015, he can score a major victory for Iraq’s future on a vital, if unsung, battlefield. Michael Knights is the Lafer Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He specialises in the politics and security of Iraq. He has worked in every Iraqi province and most of the country’s hundred districts, including periods embedded with Iraq’s security forces. Courtesy: Al-Jazeerah

10 Stay-Skinny Secrets of Women Who Never Diet A little change in attitude and behaviour goes a long way.
By Jessica \Migala You know her: She eats an ice cream cone like it’s no big deal. And you know she doesn’t always order salad. But she doesn’t have superwoman genes. So how come she doesn’t have to go on a diet? “Diets don’t work. They fail all the time,” says Carla Heiser, a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in nutritional and metabolic medicine in Chicago. Here are the 10 rules your diet-eschewing pals live by — without having to think about them. 1. Every day isn’t a special occasion. Office doughnuts, a decadent restaurant meal, cake at a friend’s birthday party. These events happen so regularly that it’s easy to justify any day as splurgeworthy. While occasional treats are must-haves, your diet as a whole is what keeps your weight steady, says Heiser. So choose your treats wisely and cut out the rest. Maybe split a crème brûlée with your husband on date night, but pass on the cookies at the meeting during the day. Or celebrate your birthday with cake, but not everyone’s 2. Talk (a lot!) over dinner. Yes, you’re at the table to eat, but you’re also there to catch up with your fellow diners, so make them the star of the show. The gabfest can slow you down so you naturally eat less. In one study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers asked people to consume a bowl of ice cream in five or 30 minutes. Those who enjoyed it slowly excreted more of the “stop eating” gut hormone called peptide YY and reported feeling fuller. So relish the lasagna, but love the company more.
3. Don’t waste time on diet foods. Foods with low-fat or low-calorie labels sound good in theory. The problem is that these are often heavily processed and high in carbs. “These will convert to sugar in your body, potentially contributing to weight gain,” says Heiser. What’s more, companies enhance these products after removing fat by pumping them with sugar, salt and other additives. “Women who don’t diet are still reading ingredient labels,” says Lori Shemek, PhD, author of the forthcoming book Fight FATflammation. But they do that to cut through the tricky health claims splashed across the front of the package to find out what’s really in the food. 4. No food is “bad.” It doesn’t pay to refer to brownies as “bad” and kale as “good.” In a University of Toronto study, women who were deprived of chocolate for a week experienced more cravings and were more likely to eat more chocolate. A later 2010 study confirmed the results: If you tell yourself you can’t have chocolate and try not to think about chocolate, you obsess over… chocolate. And find yourself scarfing down Snickers. It ties back to thinking you’re a dieting failure, which makes you feel guilty and overeat as a result. For a happier relationship with food, ditch “bad” from your vocabulary. 5. Get your beauty rest. When you’re busy, the first thing that takes a hit is sleep. But if you want to maintain a healthy BMI, research is showing that sleep takes top priority. In fact, on days when you’re sleep deprived and you have to choose between an extra hour of shuteye
Burnaby to recognize 10 Local Heroes
or waking up early to work out, Dr. Shemek suggests snoozing. “Lack of sleep has hormonal effects that create weight gain and alter your appetite to prefer high-calorie foods. Besides, you won’t have the energy to exercise effectively,” she says. 6. Let yourself off the hook. You’ve just eaten a cheeseburger and polished off the fries. Even if it wasn’t reflective of your healthy eating goals, forgive yourself and move on, promising to eat better at the next meal. Self-compassion can lead to a better relationship with food and a healthier BMI, reveals new research from the University of Waterloo in Canada. Lower self-esteem may lead to disordered eating (like bingeing) that cause weight gain. “Treat yourself like you treat a loved one: with encouragement and affirmation,” says Dr. Shemek. 7. Avoid diet soda. Artificial sweeteners are controversial. While some studies show that they don’t affect weight, other research suggests that calorie-free drinks may cause weight gain by stimulating hunger. Dr. Shemek advises avoiding them completely. “Diet sodas set the brain up for wanting more sugar, and many people get addicted to them,” she says. Plus, ordering a diet soda can make you think you’re saving calories there, so you might as well get the mac and cheese instead of a salad. 8. Experiment in the kitchen. Healthy eating is never boring if you’re jazzing up your meals with herbs and spices. They amplify any dish’s flavor and replace fat while still being just as satisfying, says
research from the University of Colorado in Denver. And adding spices like red pepper flakes and cayenne has been shown to boost metabolism, helping you burn a few extra calories from your meal. So add a dash of smoked paprika in place of butter on steamed broccoli. Rather than plain roasted chicken breast, sprinkle on a variety of dried herbs, garlic powder and chili flakes. Bon appetit! 9. Don’t count calories. There’s a huge difference between how your body uses 1,000 calories of junk food and 1,000 calories of whole foods, says Heiser. Getting wrapped up in calorie counts could make you deny yourself calorie-dense, yet nutritious, foods like fatty fish, avocado, oils like olive and coconut, nuts, and dark chocolate. Focus on filling your plate with real foods with an emphasis on protein (fish, chicken, tofu), vegetables and a source of healthy fat. Well-rounded meals coupled with heeding your hunger cues can keep you at a healthy weight, she says. 10. Eat sugar smartly. Sugar is simply not good for you. “Your body can only handle so much at one time. If you overdo it, you store it as fat,” says Heiser. But that doesn’t mean you should cut it out completely. “Figure out what your body can handle,” she says. Do you feel tired and bloated after a few cookies? Based on your reaction, you’ll know if you should cut back. After all, food is supposed to make you feel great — and any woman who doesn’t diet knows that.

Healing Opportunity for Muslim Youth:The HOPE Project By Nidha Yaqub, Executive Member of the HOPE Project Allah created every human being with dignity (Quran 17:70). To feel respected and dignified is a basic human need that Allah has given to every human being. Our Muslim youths are struggling with addictions; alcohol, drugs, substance abuse, and mental health and not getting the support necessary to keep their dignity and respect intact. In order to start the process of identification, education and prevention, a lot has to be done. The first step would be to build a relationship of trust, with youth, their families and other community members. This step will take time because sometimes as a community we forget to be merciful and don’t engage with our children. How often do we tell our loved ones how much they mean to us or hold them with compassion and empathy? Do we regularly tell our youth and children that we believe in them and their potential? Many empirical studies show that inspiration, affirmation and positive reinforcement play instrumental roles in youth and children’s learning (Morrison, 2007; Pane & Rocco, 2014). We have strong traditions in Islam where the Prophet (PBUH), treated younger generations with mercy, affection, respect and empathy. The following hadith narrated by Usamah ibn Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) shows this humane aspect of the Prophet’s personality: Allah’s Messenger used to put me on (one of) his thighs and put Al-Hasan ibn `Ali on his other thigh, and then embrace us and say, “O Allah! Please be merciful to them, as I am merciful to them” (Bukhari). Subhana’llāh. We as
a community have ignored this Sunnah and pushed our youth towards addictions and prison. Isolation, stigmatization, negative shaming, depression and feeling disrespected at home and school are the main reasons why many of our youth have unfortunately ended up with addictions. It is not as though we intentionally ignored and pushed them away. We may have never been taught how to be compassionate and empathetic, how to talk to them in a dignified manner, how to connect with them and understand their struggles, how to meet their needs and show them that we truly love them for the sake of Allah. Al-hamdulillāh the Muslim Food Bank has introduced the HOPE Project to support and empower our Muslim youth, working towards creating a safe space for them to share and overcome their struggles with drugs, alcohol, gambling and substance use. By counseling, educating and connecting them to appropriate services in the Greater Vancouver Area we hope to create a positive impact on the generations to come. Respect, confidentiality and dignity are the core guiding principles of the

10 Quick Facts on Remembrance Day
1.Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. 2.From 1921 to 1930, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. In 1931, Alan Neill, Member of Parliament for Comox–Alberni, introduced a bill to observe Armistice Day only on November 11. Passed by the House of Commons, the bill also changed the name to “Remembrance Day”. The first Remembrance Day was observed on November 11, 1931. 3.Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 1,500,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice.
4.The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to provide assistance to Veterans. 5.Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada. It is also a statutory holiday in three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) and in six provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador). 6.The national ceremony is held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Governor General of Canada presides over the ceremony. It is also attended by the Prime Minister, other government officials, representatives of Veterans’ organizations, diplomatic representatives, other dignitaries, Veterans as well as the general public. 7.In advance of the ceremony, long columns of Veterans, Canadian Armed Forces members, RCMP officers, and cadets march to the memorial lead by a pipe band and a colour guard. At the end of the ceremony, they march away to officially close the ceremony. 8.Some of the 54 Commonwealth member states, such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, observe the tradition of Remembrance Day on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Other nations observe a solemn day but at different dates. For example, ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand on April 25. In South Africa, Poppy Day is marked on the
Appreciation at Five Year Completion!
Sunday that falls closest to November 11. 9.Many nations that are not members of the Commonwealth also observe Remembrance Day on November 11, including France, Belgium and Poland. 10.The United States used to commemorate Armistice Day on November 11. However, in 1954 they changed the name to Veterans Day.
The Poppy The Poppy Campaign begins on the last Friday in October and continues through to November 11th. The Lapel Poppy can be worn every day of the Poppy Campaign and is removed at the end of the Remembrance Day ceremony. Many people place their poppy on a wreath or at the base of the cenotaph or memorial as a sign of respect at the end of the ceremony. The poppy may be worn at commemorative events throughout the year, such as anniversaries of significant battles, a memorial service, and other similar occasions. (Event organizers should seek advice from the Royal Canadian Legion on the use of the poppy for events outside of the Poppy Campaign.) The Royal Canadian Legion suggests that the poppy be worn on the left lapel of a garment and as close to the heart as possible. The poppy became widespread in Europe after soils in France and Belgium became rich in lime from debris and rubble from the fighting during the First World War. These little red flowers also flourished around the
gravesites of the war dead. In 1915, John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Artillery, famously made note of this phenomenon in his poem, In Flanders Fields. On Saturday November 9, 1918, two days before the Armistice, Moina Michael was on duty in the reading room at the YMCA Overseas War Secretaries’ headquarters in New York—a place where U.S. servicemen would often gather with friends and family to say their goodbyes before they went overseas. After reading McCrae’s poem, Moina made a personal pledge to always wear the red poppy of Flanders Fields as a sign of remembrance and for “keeping the faith with all who died.” In 1920, Anna Guérin—the French Poppy Lady—attended the national American Legion convention as a representative of France’s YMCA Secretariat. She was inspired by Moina Michael’s idea of the poppy as a memorial flower and felt that the scope of the Memorial Poppy could be expanded to help the needy. She suggested that artificial poppies could be made and sold as a way of raising money for the benefit of orphaned children and others who had suffered greatly as a result of the war. In 1921, Madame Guérin visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association of Canada (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising; which it did on July 5th of that year. Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion’s most important programs. The money raised from donations provides direct assistance for Veterans in financial distress, as well as funding for medical equipment, medical research, home services, long term care facilities and many other purposes.

US assessment – Pakistan bashing
By:Dr. Abdul Jalil Afridi, Vancouver The Pentagon in its latest assessment on security in Afghanistan has once again accused Pakistan and Iran of destabilizing regional security. The US draw down is just less than a couple months away, yet Americans have not come to the terms that their intervention in Afghanistan, spanning over a decade, has failed to bring peace and stability in that fractured and broken country. It is still in the grip of infighting amongst various groups including Taliban. With all the military might and strong politicking, the Americans have just succeeded in conquering Afghanistan’s Capital Kabul and some other cities situated in and around it. However, their ruthless power-grabbing tactics won them only puppet regimes who are dancing on their tunes. Bombing, shelling rocket attacks continue to make headlines even today. Earlier invasions by the UK and Russia met with similar fate in this region. Having a long porous border with neighbors punctuated with similar belief, language and culture, the people-to-people interaction interlinks them in a strong bond over the centuries. Instead of bringing the neighbors on the same page, the US policy on Afghanistan created gulf amongst them thus it failed to plug in the holes existing on the border yet it expects the others should do this job for them. With the military might the US resorts to arm-twisting particularly in the Muslim world to meet her interests in the region bulldozing the national interests of regional states. In the war on terror, failing to achieve her objectives, the US has resorted to criticism, such policies has neither bore any fruit nor it will give them benefit in future. If Pakistan, as the Pentagon assessment believes, is using militants as proxy forces in Afghanistan then why it never shed a tear over killing of the in-
Call for Party Reservations nocent people in Pakistan by the extremists. Will it care to disclose and take action against those providing finances to the TTP operative in Pakistan? Allies share pains and pleasures rather than pursuing one-sided agenda. Pakistan is precariously pitched against foreign-funded extremists and putting up defense against Indian aggression on its own. These irritants will continue to hurt others over their erroneous policies. The Americans, aided by the Afghan and Indian armies, who could not seal long borders with neighbors, instead of seeking cooperation now have opted to unleash Pakistan and Iran bashing in media. No matter what Americans believe the fact is that being a next door neighbors, the US must not forget it that Pakistan and Iran have a strong role to play in the region that cannot be substituted with India. New Delhi will be dependent on Pakistan to have a land route access to Kabul. Hegemonic policy of India, if continued, will extract stiff resistance in Pakistan. Hence the US must treat Pakistan with respect giving it credit for the role it played in the war on terror otherwise sooner or later it will have to repent over her policies. Even after the Afghan war against Russia, the US abandoned her support to Pakistan; once again she is repeating the same—a policy that will hurt more than anything else. Pakistan took a little more than an hour on the fifth morning to claim the last two New Zealand wickets to win the Abu Dhabi Test by 248 runs. The result made Misbah-ul-Haq Pakistan’s most successful Test captain, his 15th victory taking him ahead of Imran Khan and Javed Miandad. The finish seemed imminent when legspinner Yasir Shah spun through Mark Craig’s defences in the second over of the day, but New Zealand’s last wicket added 54 runs in
15.1 overs. Ish Sodhi cut, swept and pulled his way to his second half-century, bringing it up with a slog over the midwicket boundary. Trent Boult gave him dogged support. There were plenty of close calls, though, as edges squirted wide of and between fielders, and batsmen got inside edges in the nick of time, before the ball sneaked through to hit pad or the stumps. The best opportunity came in the 65th over, when Sodhi attempted a sweep and the ball lobbed off the glove be-
Pakistan seal 248 -run victory hind the wicketkeeper. Younis Khan at first slip left it to Sarfaraz, who bid not attempt the catch. The bowler Zulfiqar Babar scowled. Victory was finally achieved after the drinks break, when Imran Khan reversed a full ball into Sodhi’s pads and successfully appealed for lbw. Pakistan’s celebrations were interrupted by a review of the decision, but replays showed it to be an umpire’s call. The win was Pakistan’s third in a row, after the 2-0 sweep of Australia.
Qatar to keep 2022 World Cup despite FIFA report
England is set to be criticised in a report into World Cup bidding but Qatar is expected to escape any censure that would threaten the Middle Eastern state hosting the 2022 tour-
nament. German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert, chairman of the adjudicatory chamber of FIFA’s independent ethics committee, has confirmed his 42-page initial findings of the investigation into 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding will be published on Thursday. The Press Association reports that England’s wooing of Jack Warner, the former FIFA vice-president who resigned in disgrace in 2010, is set to be highlighted. These include paying for a gala dinner worth £35,000 for Caribbean football officials and organising an England friendly against Trinidad. Neither of the leaders of England’s 2018 bid at the time have ties with the FA any longer. Chairman Lord Triesman, who had accused four FIFA executive committee members
of requesting gifts in return for votes, had resigned his post in 2010 while chief executive Andy Anson was appointed independent director of the British Olympic Association in 2011. The investigation by American attorney Michael Garcia has looked into the bidding processes by all countries that contested the 2010 vote for the World Cups. FIFA’s executive committee made Russia the hosts of the 2018 competition, ahead of England - which won just two votes - plus joint bids by Netherlands/Belgium and Spain/Portugal. The 2022 tournament went to Qatar, which beat the United States, South Korea, Japan and Australia. It is not thought that England or any of the bidding countries will face sanctions as a result of the Garcia
investigation but that recommendations will be made on how FIFA conducts bids in the future. That would come as a huge relief to Qatar following a series of allegations involving Mohamed Bin Hammam, the Qatari former FIFA executive committee member who was banned for life by FIFA. Bin Hammam is alleged to have organised payments and sweeteners for Warner and other officials, but Qatar World Cup officials have always insisted he was separate from the bid team. Bin Hammam was also involved in challenging Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency in 2011 before he withdrew from the race after it was alleged he made payments to Caribbean officials.
