President Barack Obama issued an appeal on Monday for restraint by protesters and police after a Missouri grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer in the shooting death of a black teen last August. In a late-night appearance in the White House briefing room, Obama also urged Americans to understand that much work remained to be done to improve relations between black Americans and law enforcement. “We need to accept that this decision was the grand jury’s to make. There are Americans who agree with it and there are Americans who are deeply disappointed, even angry. It’s an understandable reaction,” Obama said. Angry crowds in Ferguson, Missouri, took to the streets on Monday night and there were flashes of violence after the grand jury determined there was no probable cause to charge officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The shooting set off weeks of sometimes violent protests in the St. Louis suburb and highlighted racial tensions in the community. Is Obama’s Quick Fix, a Political Gambit?
There h iis a type off people l who h hhave no respect for local or the global laws; they are the ones who, despite the tough rules in place, are usually able to successfully migrate to foreign lands without getting caught. Shamelessely, they have no respect for the rights of those who are already lined up waiting for clearance to legally immigrate. The said que jumpers end up as illegal immigrants. Indeed, it’s frustrating scenario. The ongoing rise in illegal migrantion to the U.S. from certain Mexican border points and from other countries via available channels have caused a serious headache for the United States of America. Historically, U.S. presidents through the years have been making a variety of changes through their executive actions. But, executive orders have the potential to harm millions of Americans costing the taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. Having adopted the “middle ground approach” to fix the broken system, President Obama has actually opted for paving the way for better economy through halting the painful deportations. We can’t blame those who are uncomfortable with President’s executive order to grant de facto amnesty to five millions (out of eleven million illegal aliens). Let’s realize the order is aimed at helping illegal immigrants brought to America as children and those who are parents of children with legal status. The nervous Americans are afraid that the president’s wrong decision may cause an aggravation of racial tensions. Because, illegal immigration increases the supply of lowskilled workers, which drives down wages for the less educated black and white Americans. Obviously, the Native Americans are bound to face more competition for positions paying significantly above the federal minimum. It translates into millions of illegal g immigrants g
getting i qualifi lified d ffor workk permits, i hence, the enablement to grab better-paying jobs. In other words, it is not difficult to figure out why many white Americans would perceive illegal immigration as undermining their culture, standard of living and the rule of law. They label the Democrats as opportunists who would damage the constitution to maintain their grasp on power. Obama’s stance: He has waited more than a year for House Republican leaders to put an “immigration reform plan” to a vote after the “Democrat-controlled Senate” passed one. He has bypassed the Congress on immigration reform, saying the country can no longer wait to fix a broken system. Triggering Irritants: like many others, the WashingtonTimes Headlines highlighting “Illegals get a pay raise while current American workers’ checks could get squeezed,” are surely creating a sense of dissatisfaction for a large majority of the legal residents. Of course, the Illegal immigrants stand to make out nicely, seeing a big jump in their wages under President Obama’s policy. Republicans are angry over Obama’s decision to use an executive order to put forth his plan, shielding of illegal immigrants from deportation. On the contrary, Obama acknowledged that criticism directly. “Leaving this broken system the way it is” ... “that’s the real amnesty,” he said. He then called mass amnesty “unfair” and “mass deportation ... both impossible and contrary to our character.” The question is why the Republicans have been ignoring the passage of Immigration reforms?. The Constitution: “The term “executive power” Article II, Section 1, Clause 1 of the Constitution, refers to the title of President as the executive. He is instructed therein by y the declaration
“take k Care that h the h Laws bbe ffaithih fully executed” made in Article II, Section 3, Clause 5, else he faces impeachment.” “An executive order of the President must find support in the Constitution, either in a clause granting the President specific power, or by a delegation of power by Congress to the President.” Clearly, if the U.S. President has the power to make executive orders, the Congress and the Senate have the power to shut down the government and impeach the President. It’s the ongoing opinion that impeachment is not a viable option, and Republican lawmakers might be challenging executive orders in federal court. Main beneficiaries of the president’s actions are immigrants who have been in the U.S. illegally for more than 5 years but whose children are citizens or lawful permanent residents. After passing background checks and paying fees, those individuals can now be granted relief from deportation for 3 years and get work permits. Obama is also broadening his 2012 directive that deferred deportation for some young immigrants who entered the country illegally. Obama will expand eligibility to people who arrived in the U.S. as minors before 2010, instead of the current cut off of 2007, and will lift the requirement that the applicants be under 31. The expansion is expected to affect about 300,000 people. The Obama executive order is great news for many young “dreamers” and their families—great, great news. If only it were as good as it seems—if only it were a real solution. BUT, a long-term solution still has to go through Congress—and it has to be bipartisan. Although it is shocking and devastating for the parents but such result was expected by majority, as so far we have not seen much of justice when it comes to dealing with African Americans. This is definitely miscarriage of Justice like in the corrupted Kangooroo court, (like Egyptian court) where African Americans can never get a fare trial and justice. Thousands of young Af. Am. people are rotting in prison for the minor charges and many are imprisoned for murders they never committed.That is proven by the DNA test, of many freed after 20-30 yrs behind bars. This verdict proves that the person in Uniform has an upper hand and he can run the law as he likes. No doubt the Law Officers are allowed to use ‘use of force, and any kind of means in defense and in capturing the criminals, but to shoot at an unarmed man killing him cannot justified. If the Police Officer was provoked and
attacked as alleged in this case, then he has the right to defend and retaliate. But he doesn’t have a right to kill an unarmed juvenile. Although, the rightful tactics used by the Canadian Law Officers differs from U.S. officers. The officer could have fired a warning shot, but not to kill an unarmed juvenile firing 12 shots at him.. .He could have made an arrest under a Gun point, and file a case against Michael Brown if at all he attacked first. Evidently, in this era of anti-Christ, anti-Islam anti-GOD nothing good can come of anything, but increase of unjust system and more chaos, trials and tribulation is expected as the Divine prophecies. It is high time to get the protection of Higher Power Creator-GOD, only HE can save us from the turmoils.
The Conservatives’ new income-splitting scheme By: Scott Brison, MP Liberal Finance Critic The federal Conservative government will forgo a surplus this year and instead borrow money to pay for income-splitting and other new tax measures, according to its own fall economic update. In the last
two months the Conservatives announced more than $3 billion in tax changes for this year, including an expensive incomesplitting scheme. If they had followed the plan laid out by the late Jim Flaherty, the federal budget would have a small surplus this year instead of a $3 billion deficit. Earlier this year, Mr. Flaherty called on the Conservatives to abandon their income-splitting scheme, saying “I think incomesplitting needs a long, hard analytical look … to see who it affects and to what degree, because I’m not sure that overall, it benefits our society.”He was right. The Conservatives’ new income-splitting scheme (which they call “the Family Tax Cut”) won’t give a dime to more than 85 percent of Canadian households. But it will cost Canadians $2.4 billion this year alone.We don’t think it’s fair to ask middle class families to pay to give families like the Prime Minister’s a $2,000 tax break. A Liberal government would focus on helping the middle class instead. The economic update also showed that the growth rate for the Canadian economy will slow down each and every year between 2015 and 2019--and that the recent Conservative tax measures will do nothing to turn it around. That’s not good enough. It’s time for the government to change course, focus on the economy, and start putting Canadian jobs and growth ahead of politics.

Obama is expanding deferred action to include those brought here before Jan. 1, 2010, and by removing the age cap. This isn’t just about young people eligible for the DREAM Act or the Obama order. Important: The legal immigration system mustt work for all Americans, citizens, immigrants, and employers who heavily depend on immigrant skilled d workers, to maintan good health off their businesses as well as to keep contributing to the national economy. Lastly, Immigration reform is needed for fixing the flawed legal system in order to create enough legal visas.

ISCC Calgary The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC) and Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) strongly condemn today’s attack at the Kingston Ontario mosque. Several windows at the mosque were smashed and a Star of David was drawn in the snow in front of the mosque. Within the last few weeks several mosques in Quebec Ontario and Alberta have been vandalized. This rising vandalism against Canadian mosques is a matter of huge concern for all Canadian Muslims. However, we believe that the overwhelming majority of Canadians do not support these attacks. Canadians of all faiths are united against racism hate and violence towards any segment of the Canadian society. It is the responsibility of police to find out the attackers and bring them to justice. We urge our elected politicians at all levels of government to denounce these attacks publicly and in the legislatures. The silence of our politicians on escalating attacks on mosques is very un-Canadian and concerning. ISCC and MAT ask all Muslims to be vigilant and report any incident of racism and vandalism to police immediately. Only gave permission for one drone strike: Pervez Musharraf
As Pakistan continues to be hit by US drones, former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, who is widely believed to have authorised the controversial drone programme during his time in office, on Tuesday clarified he only gave the green light for ‘one’ US drone strike. “I only gave permission once after we were short on time and were shown evidence against a prominent militant group,” the former military ruler said in an interview to BBC Urdu. Despite, claiming that he only gave the green signal once, Musharraf admitted nine drone strikes were carried out during his tenure. Musharraf has largely been held responsible for allowing the US drone campaign in the country’s semi-autonomous tribal regions, an accusation he has often denied. Shifting his focus to his treason trial which has taken a new
turn as a special court directed the government to include the names of three senior ex-functionaries in the chargesheet, Musharraf said the case was a ploy to avenge his overthrow of the Nawaz-led government. “The charges are concocted and politicised,” he affirmed, expressing hope that in the end justice will prevail. Further, the former military ruler claimed he was aware he would likely face a trial and still chose to return to the country. Commenting on democracy in Pakistan, the former military ruler said, “We want to impose democracy in every country but that is not possible since every country has its own problems, according to which it has to mold its rule.” “I believe in democracy but at the same time I believe that democratic rule similar to that in United Kingdom and the United States cannot be implemented in Pakistan,” Musharraf said. Further, regarding Pakistan-India relations, the former ruler said that no Pakistani would accept India disgracing and insulting them even though there is a desire to maintain cordial relations. “Neither of us are ready to bow down,” he said.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan claimed his ‘decisive rally’ in the federal capital on November 30 would determine whether the government would remain in power or a ‘naya Pakistan’ would be formed. Addressing a rally in Gujranwala, Imran warned Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar against disrupting his peaceful rally. On August 31, a pitched battle broke out riot police and workers of the PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT). Israel delays vote on controversial bill
Israeli politicians temporarily averted a political crisis on Monday, delaying the Knesset vote on a controversial “Jewish state” bill that sparked a shouting match inside the cabinet and drew angry reactions from the country’s Palestinian minority. The bill declares Israel to be “the national state of the Jewish people”. Many provisions seem quite banal: It affirms, for example, that the flag will have a Star of David, and that the national anthem will remain HaTikvah, a song about yearning for Israel. But it also stipulates that Jewish law should inspire the Israeli legal system, and reserves other “national rights” exclusively for Jews, including their right to automatically obtain Israeli citizenship. “[Israel] has equal individual rights for every citizen, and we insist on this,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the vote. “But only the Jewish people have national rights.” The bill was approved by a 15-6 vote on Sunday, after a stormy four-hour debate. Journalists were not allowed inside the cabinet room, but ministers could clearly be heard shouting at each other and banging on tables. There have actually been three versions of the bill circulated in recent weeks, one drafted by Netanyahu, the others by right-wing lawmakers. Netanyahu’s version removed the more dramatic provisions from the other two, such as stripping Arabic of its status as an official language. But experts warn that the law would make it easier for the Knesset to pass discriminatory legislation, and for the High Court to uphold it. Yehuda Weinstein, the attorney general, said in a letter to ministers that the law would cause “deterioration of the democratic characteristic of the state”. Yohanan Plesner, the president of the Israel Democracy Institute, said the whole process “smacks of populist politicking”. “[The bill] does not mention the principle of equality, thereby minimising Israel’s democratic essence and rendering it subservient to the Jewish character of the state,” he said. Palestinians make up about 20 percent of Israel’s population; they have equal rights under the law, but in practise are subject to widespread discrimination. Adalah, a local rights group, counts more than 50 laws that are biased against the Palestinian minority, in everything from criminal procedure to land rights. “The Israeli need for this law is not constitutional, rather it is a policy that aims to emphasise that Arab citizenship in Israel was and remains a second-class citi-
zenship,” said Salah Mohsen, a spokesperson for Adalah. The debate comes at a fraught moment, after a wave of Palestinian attacks killed 11 Israelis over the past month, including five at a Jerusalem synagogue last week. The synagogue attack led to fresh displays of racism, with signs plastered across the city warning that “employing Arabs endangers Jews”. Last week the mayor of Ashkelon, Itamar Shimoni, tried to ban Palestinian construction workers from schools. The decision was met with widespread condemnation, and he eventually reversed it - but he now plans to remove students from the schools where Palestinians are working. Yair Lapid, the finance minister, argued during Sunday’s debate that the bill would further alienate the minority. “This morning I spoke with the family of Zidan Saif,” Lapid said, referring to a Druze police officer killed in a shootout with the synagogue attackers. “What can we say to this family? That he is a secondclass citizen?” The bill was meant to go before the full Knesset for a preliminary vote on Wednesday, but ministers have agreed to delay it for another week, for fear that a vote would bring down the government. Netanyahu’s coalition is increasingly fragile, plagued by a looming budget crisis and the recent violence. With growing talk of early elections, analysts say the prime minister wants to shore up his support on the right, and perhaps force the centre-left parties out of his coalition. Five of the six “no” votes came from Lapid’s party, Yesh Atid; the sixth was from Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who heads her own centrist party. The cabinet decided that members would not be allowed to vote according to their conscience when the bill goes before the full Knesset. That puts Lapid and Livni in a bind: They cannot vote against the law and remain in the coalition. Livni vowed not to abstain, telling Channel 2 that “I won’t hide in the bathroom during the vote on Wednesday.” But both ministers added on Sunday night that they would only reject the bill “in its current form” - opening the door to a compromise. “Yesh Atid and I are not against the Jewish state law but do not support it in the form in which it was submitted,” Lapid said in a speech. Iran nuclear talks extended till July 2015
Negotiators have extended talks on Iran’s nuclear programme for a comprehensive agreement until July 2015 after failing to meet a Monday deadline, diplomats said. But Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that a nuclear deal with the six world powers would be done despite a missed deadline in Vienna that prompted a seven-month extension in talks. “This path of negotiation will reach a final agreement. Most of the gaps have been removed,” he said on state television. His comments were similar to those of US Secretary of State John Kerry who insisted “real and substantial progress” was made during the talks. He called on US lawmakers not to impose new sanctions on Tehran. “We have made real and substantial progress,” Kerry said in Vienna. “This is not the time to get up and get away.... We look for your support (in Congress) for this extension.” Iran and six powers - the US, China, Russia, Britain, France plus Germany (P5 1) - have been negotiating for six days in the Austrian capital to turn an interim accord reached with the Islamic Republic a year ago into a lasting agreement. The six nations want Tehran to scale back its nuclear programme in exchange for a lifting of sanctions. Negotiators agreed to nail down by March 1 what needs to be done by Iran and the six nations it is negotiating with, and by when. A final agreement is meant to follow four months later. Kerry praised his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, saying he had “worked diligently and approached these negotiations in good faith and with seriousness of purpose”. “That’s what it takes to try to resolve the kind of difficult issues here,” Kerry said. Kerry also urged negotiators to “keep what is discussed in these negotiations exclusively among the negotiators”. “If the facts are out there being bandied back and forth in
the public domain ... they often can end up defeating good ideas before they get off the ground,” he said. Al Jazeera’s Jonah Hull, reporting from Vienna, said one of the sticking points was uranium enrichment by the Iranian government. Our correspondent said that despite talking about “gaps” that made it difficult to meet the Monday deadline, negotiators were not willing to talk about those gaps in detail. The International Atomic Energy Agency said on Monday Iran had taken the necessary steps to continue to comply with an interim nuclear agreement, the Reuters news agency reported. Trita Parsi, president of the Washington-based National Iranian American Council, told Al Jazeera it was imperative for all parties to continue negotiations. “It’s important that they’re continuing negotiations to reach an agreement, but there is big disappointment at missing the deadline, and the environment will be more doubtful, unforgiving in both Washington and Tehran,” he said from Vienna. After 12 years of rising tensions, negotiators sought to reach a deal by Monday midnight aimed at easing fears that Tehran will develop nuclear weapons under the guise of developing civilian energy - an ambition Iran denies. Iranian officials have refused to reduce the volume of uranium they are capable of enriching, a stand western officials say is unacceptable as this would potentially allow the country to amass enough fissile material for an atomic bomb in little time. A second sticking point is the pace and sequencing of sanctions relief. Iran wants them terminated swiftly, not suspended and gradually scrapped, depending on the degree of Iranian compliance with the deal terms, as the West wants. Another dispute is over the deal’s duration: Western countries want it to be up to 20 years but Iran wants it much shorter. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, welcomed the apparent lack of progress at the Vienna talks. “No deal is better than a bad deal. The deal that Iran was pushing for was terrible. A deal would have left Iran with the ability to enrich uranium for an atom bomb while removing the sanctions,” Netanyahu said. “The right deal that is needed is to dismantle Iran’s capacity to make atomic bombs and only then dismantle the sanctions. “Since that’s not in the offing, this result is better, a lot better,” he said, in response to news the Vienna talks were likely to break off and resume next year. Ukraine leader, under pressure from West, pledges new government soon
Ukraine will take the first steps this week towards forming a new government, President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday, seeking to assuage concern among his Western allies that the delay is holding up reform and imperiling Western assistance. The U.S. and other Western governments are criticizing Kiev’s tardiness in putting together a government following October elections - with suspicions that the delay is due to rivalry between Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk over control of key portfolios. “We hope that the process (of forming a government) will begin this week,” Poroshenko said at a news conference with visiting Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, apparently referring to the first session of the new parliament on Thursday. Separately, Poroshenko also announced that Lithuania would provide Ukraine with some military aid to help Kiev in its fight against pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country. “We have agreed on supplies of concrete elements of
concrete armaments for the Ukrainian armed forces. This is real help,” Poroshenko said standing alongside Grybauskaite. It was not clear, however, if Lithuania was following fellow NATO member the United States in providing non-lethal military equipment or whether it was supplying weaponry - something NATO countries have so far been reluctant to do in case arming a non-member prompts a conflict with Russia. Ukraine has pressed NATO countries to provide weapons to help it defend itself against attacks by well armed Russianbacked separatists who, before a ceasefire came into effect, inflicted heavy losses on government forces in their fight to hive off parts of Ukraine’s east. Despite the ceasefire, three more Ukrainian soldiers were killed overnight into Monday, the Kiev military said. Kiev says more than 150 government troops have died since the truce came into force on Sept 5. The United Nations says more than 4,300 people have been killed overall in the conflict. Asked whether Ukraine
would seek to join NATO, Poroshenko held out the prospect of a referendum in several years’ time, but said attempts to join now would cause “more harm than good”. Before the confrontation with Russia, Ukrainians showed little interest in joining NATO, and the country’s constitution specifies a “nonbloc”, unaligned status. But since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March and Moscow’s open backing for the pro-Russian rebellions, popular support for joining the Alliance has shot up. Last week, U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden became the latest Western politician to express concern at Kiev’s slowness in forming a new government team, without which new International Monetary Fund credits and other Western assistance cannot be released. “Form a new government as quickly as possible. It should be done in days not weeks,” Biden said in Kiev. He said a new government was vitally needed to form stronger democratic institutions, enhance integration with Europe and fight “the cancer of corrup-
tion”. Poroshenko, elected in May after “Euromaidan” street protests overthrew Moscow-backed Viktor Yanukovich, did not volunteer any explanation for the delay in forming a government which may now emerge early next week. But commentators say Poroshenko wants his candidate in the sensitive post of interior minister - though filling this post falls within the prerogative of the Prime Minister rather than that of the President. With the country at war, this would give Poroshenko, rather than Yatseniuk, control over a post which directs the National Guard and volunteer battalions fighting alongside government forces against the separatists. Yatseniuk, however, is said to be insisting that he keep the right to appoint the post, and keep his man Arsen Avakov in situ. Yatseniuk has steadily taken on the role of a hawk in Poroshenko’s administration with strongly-worded attacks on Russia and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. This contrasts with the smoother, more pragmatic style of Poroshenko who is insisting that
there can be no military solution to the conflict and stresses the validity of the Sept. 5 peace deal even though both sides accuse the other of violating it. Poroshenko, a confectionery tycoon who was elected by a landslide last May, was on the receiving end of public anger for the first time last Friday when he was heckled by a crowd of aggrieved relatives as he paid his respects to the 100 or so people killed in the “Euromaidan” upheaval. They complained he had not fulfilled a pledge to make their dead kinsmen national heroes - something which brings financial benefits to the families. After partition he migrated to Pakistan where he served Pakistan Air Force as Aircraft Instrument Engineer. He also got chance to work for Royal Iranian Air Force in Iran and Royal Saudi Air Force in Saudi Arabia. In 1998 he migrated to Canada. He used to live in Burnaby and gave daras in Bosnia Hall, then moved to Vancouver, close to Wellvin Mosque, where he volunteered to lead prayers for quite some time. He used to lead Juma Prayers also. In the month of Ramadan, after Taraveeh salah he used to narrate the translation in Urdu of Suras which Hafiz Sahab read in Taraveeh for the benefit of the audience. After his Total Knee Joint Replacement Surgery in 2004 he couldn’t lead prayers. But still he conducts Urdu daras in Richmond mosque every Thursday and in Wellvin Mosque on Tuesdays whenever Molana Shahadat is busy.He has 6 children(4 sons and 2 daughters) and 15 Grand Children. 1 in 5 B.C. children live in poverty
A coalition of advocacy groups says the level of child poverty in B.C. is growing, with roughly 1 in 5 children in the province living in poverty. In its annual B.C. Child Poverty Report Card, released Monday morning, the First Call coalition says 169,240 children were living below the poverty line in B.C. in 2012. Last year, the number cited in their report stood at 153,000 children. This year’s report used the latest numbers available from Statistics Canada, which are from 2012. According to the report, B.C. has the fifth highest child poverty rate among the Canadian provinces. Nearly half of B.C. children who live in a single parent family were living below the poverty line in 2012, according to the report. That statistic comes as no surprise to Viveca Ellis, who became a single mother when her son, who is now five years old, was a baby. “It was this complex combination of the extremely high cost of childcare, precarious work, our broken welfare system,

and this social isolation that can be very dehabilitating as a single mother,” she told The Early Edition’s Rick Cluff. After reading last year’s First Call report, she met with four other single mothers, and formed the Single Mothers’ Alliance B.C., to further awareness around the needs of single mothers. According to Statistics Canada, 81 per cent of single parents in this country are mothers. Ellis said she knows first hand what it’s like to struggle just to afford food on the table. “Activities are out of reach, getting in to Science World is out of reach, any kind of fun activity that you know your child needs is out of reach,” she said. “Everything else falls by the wayside.” Ellis wants to see the government take steps beyond the welfare system to improve conditions for single mothers, and help them move out of poverty without depending on welfare cheques or the food bank. “The current poverty rate is a choice our government is making,” she said The “poverty line” is different, depending on the family situation. Canada ranked 4th best country in which to grow old
By:Andrea Janus Canada is the fourth-best country in which to grow old, while Afghanistan is the worst, according to a new global index, which warns nations that they must work quickly to address the implications of a rapidly aging global population. The findings are contained in HelpAge International’s 2014 Global AgeWatch Index, the release of which is timed to coincide with the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. Data from the UN Population Fund contributed to the findings. The Index ranks 96 countries according to the social and economic wellbeing of its citizens over the age of 60 in four key areas: income security, health, personal capacity, and an enabling environment. The prevalence of both employer-sponsored pension plans and individual registered retirement plans also contribute to the strong income security score. •Canada ranked 8th in capability due to high rates of post-secondary education. Nearly 84 per cent of older Canadians have higher education, which is a whopping 23 percentage points above the average for the region. Higher education “impacts positively on [Canadians’] working life, as well as on their life expectancy,” the report says. A growing number of Canadians have also continued working into their sixties, the report notes. While some have done so for economic reasons, others have delayed retirement “to stay socially connected and active,” the report notes. •Canada ranked 9th in the “enabling environment” category, with above-average scores for safety, civic freedom and social connectedness. However, it scored below average on satisfaction with public transport. While larger cities have comprehensive public transport systems and offer seniors discounted rates, “most seniors live in areas where the car is the primary form of transportation,” the report says. Seniors with a valid driver’s licence and access to a car are more likely to participate in social and family activities. There are an estimated 868 million people over the age of 60 living in the world, representing about 12 per cent of the global population. That is expected to jump to 2.02 billion by the year 2050, the report says. A country’s strong economic performance or growth are not enough to improve older residents’ wellbeing, the report says. That figure will rise to four-fifths by 2050. “In many countries, life expectancy at 60 is now at least a third more than what it was in the mid-twentieth century,” reads the executive summary accompanying the report.
“However, people’s experiences of later life varies, depending to a large extent on where they live and their circumstances earlier in life.”This year’s report focused on pensions, and found that only one-in-four people over age 65 in low- and middle-income countries receive a pension. It notes the rise of taxpayer-funded “social” pensions, whereby a basic regular income is offered to older citizens. China, Nepal, Thailand, Mexico and Peru are just some of the countries that have introduced social pensions, recognizing that many of their workers don’t hold jobs with employer-sponsored pensions. •In China, a social pension introduced in 2009 covers 133 million people over the age of 60. •In Mexico, the growth of social pension plans over the past decade has resulted in nine out of 10 people over age 65 with coverage. While social pension systems help reduce poverty and inequality, they have other benefits, the report found. Volunteerism in Islam
By Dr Ahmad Hussein Sakr Volunteering is the lifeblood of any community. It is because of volunteers that communities are able to run organizations, social services, conferences, playgroups, drop-in centers, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, open libraries, run schools, set up blood banks, and the list goes on. Paid employees only make up a small part of the social services network; without volunteers such endeavors would come to a standstill. As Muslims, our role isn’t just to make our salat and fast and pay zakat. We are encouraged to take on a broader role by working to improve the communities we live in; we should be visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, teaching people to read, helping people who have no one to turn to. It is by translating our love of Allah into good actions that we strengthen our imaan. Islam is a faith of action and we need to demonstrate our faith by working to make the world a better place. In Islam there is a strong ethic of volunteerism. This does not simply extend to running study circles or fundraising for the
masjid. As Muslims, we see our role as world citizens. The idea of working for a better society or community shouldn’t be limited to the Muslim community but should extend to the broader nonMuslim community as well. Because we live in that community too, whatever weaknesses are present affect us also. Dawah, the idea of inviting others to Islam, takes on myriad forms. The obvious one is educating people specifically about Islam and the principles enshrined therein. But the less obvious form is through doing good works and setting an example. This is where volunteerism plays a role. • As a community, Muslims need to cultivate a culture of volunteerism. There is a persistent notion that volunteers are essentially free labour. Their efforts are not appreciated and, indeed, are often criticized. We need to shift our perception and see that it is because of volunteers that so many of the services we need are available. Entire mosques have been built through the efforts of volunteers, conferences are run by volunteers, Eid prayers are organized by volunteers, schools are run, in large part, by volunteers, Muslim newspapers and magazines are written for and published by volunteers, and so on. • It is also important to note that volunteering should be a priority. Typically, Muslims see volunteering as something that should be done when you have nothing else to do. This should not be the case. If people generally see volunteering as something secondary and less important, the quality of the effort is greatly diminished. Volunteering must be at least as important as other pur-
suits. Volunteering should be done by professionals. This is not to say that unless you have a graduate degree in mathematics, you shouldn’t help with an after-school tutoring program. Rather, if you have that graduate degree or are a teacher, you should be the one who should take the initiative in starting the tutoring program. Your skills will be invaluable to that program. If all the math tutors are people who have weak math skills, the effort will be a waste of everyone’s time and resources. Not to mention the students who will continue to fail their math tests. It is exceedingly important to avoid volunteer burnout. In every community there are a core group of volunteers and the Muslim community is no different. We all know the one Muslim brother or sister who helps out at all the events and is always working at breakneck speed. This is not fair. It is of no help to leave all the work to a few frazzled people while the rest sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour. The core group eventually burns out. They have other obligations -- family, work, social activities. When they are worn out and drop out, the whole community feels their absence. Volunteering has many benefits. Because of people’s willingness to work for free, many services can be offered at a lower cost or even for free; there is far more flexibility in the delivery of services since more people are available to help; volunteering gives individuals a broader sense of community; and people also feel a greater connection to one another when they are involved in volunteer activities.

There are also personal benefits for the volunteer. We understand that our primary motivation for helping others should be our love for Allah but that doesn’t mean we can’t benefit from our volunteer activities. Many volunteers have learned invaluable skills and have made personal contacts that have helped them in securing employment later on. Also, for students, volunteering is an excellent way to build up a resume and gain a wide range of experience that can certainly help when it comes time to apply to college and university. There are also some important rules to remember when volunteering: •No volunteer is to brag about giving his time, effort, energy, knowledge and memory when he is doing it fee sabeelillah (in the way of Allah). •No volunteer should accuse the employees that they are receiving money from the general budget of the community, while he is doing it for free. • No volunteer should accept a job or a title for the sake of show, or else it will become hypocrisy. •No volunteer should accept a title or a job when he knows that he is not qualified for the job. •No volunteer should accept a title, while knowing that he has no time to volunteer for such a job.

No escape for civilians in Syria
From the capture of Mosul by ISIL to the siege of Kobani, the political and media focus on what used to be called the Syrian civil war has changed. The battlefield has become more complex as the images have become ever more brutal. Yet one thing has not become more complex: the human suffering on the part of millions of Syrians fleeing their homes in fear of their lives, or stuck in them desperately trying to survive. It is vital that the new focus in the west on military options does not come at the expense of two humanitarian tragedies - one, inside Syria, continuing, and another, in the neighbouring countries, in the making. Inside Syria, fighting between the government of Bashar al-Assad and opposition forces is intensifying, exacerbating the dire humanitarian conditions already endured by its traumatised population. Relentless violence and insecurity hinder access to half of the 11 million people desperately in need of aid. The number trapped in besieged areas a quarter of a million people in Damascene suburbs and Aleppo governorate - remains the same. As the UN Secretary-General put it last month, “ordinary people are denied the basics required for their survival, food, healthcare, clean water… when assistance is available a short drive away”. In June, we called on members of the UN Security Council and key Middle Eastern states to appoint senior diplomats and politicians as humanitarian envoys, focused solely on securing help for those in need. Such top-level commitment is even more urgently necessary today than it was five months ago. The second, emerging tragedy is the increasing inability of Syria’s neighbours to maintain the levels of hospitality they have
extended to those fleeing the conflict over the past three and a half years. Since fighting broke out, the one escape route open to Syria’s terrified (and typically multiply displaced) civilians has been across its borders and into Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey or Iraq. Together, these states have taken in more than three million Syrian refugees. Their governments have provided assistance to the most vulnerable and to the communities who host them, and have supported the efforts of NGOs to deliver vital services to those affected by the conflict. Their contribution makes them by some measures the biggest humanitarian donors to relief efforts in the region. But these four countries’ economies, basic services and infrastructure can no longer cope. Syrian refugees now constitute a third of Lebanon’s population. Jordan, one of the most water-starved nations on the planet, hosts more than 600,000 registered refugees, proportionally equivalent to the United States absorbing the population of the United Kingdom. The two countries have the highest per capita ratios of refugees worldwide, and their populations, along with those of Turkey and Iraq, are struggling to bear the growing burden - from overcrowding in schools and hospitals and spiralling living costs to stretched social fabric. Consequently, the four countries are taking measures to control the flow of refugees, targeting help on the most vulnerable. In 2013, the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, registered an average of 150,000 new Syrian refugees every month in the Levant. This year, the monthly average has dropped to 78,000, and in October - despite the increasing violence in Syria - the agency registered just 18,453. Thousands of traumatised civilians
are now trapped on or near the country’s borders: Fighting prevents their return home, or they have no homes to return to. Five months of heavy rain, snow and sub-zero temperatures lie ahead. This dangerous scenario is the result of a collective international failure to mobilise sufficient support for those countries whose proximity to Syria fates them to be beacons of hope for those desperate to get out. There are a number of steps that urgently need to be taken. Donors should work with Syria’s neighbours to establish safe border crossing mechanisms for all those wishing to do so, regardless of their age, ethnicity, or political background. UNHCR’s 2014 appeal for Syrian refugees - still only halffunded - must be supported. Syria’s neighbours should receive the direct financial assistance they urgently require to plug the widening gaps in their basic services, repair their buckling infrastructure and create income-generating opportunities, to the benefit of both refugees and the communities that host them. Even if the conflict in Syria ended tomorrow it would take decades to rebuild the country; longer-term developmental support - allowing Syria’s neighbours to rebuild and fortify their shaken economic and social infrastructure - will therefore be key. There is also another, symbolic but important, way in which those outside the Middle East can shoulder a fairer share of the burden. Less than two percent of the millions
of Syrians sheltering in neighbouring countries are being offered resettlement outside the region. No state - with the exception of Germany - has allowed more than a token few to receive protection within its borders: The 18,453 registered by UNHCR last month is more than double the number the rest of the world has taken in through the agency’s programmes since the Syrian conflict began. This constitutes a depressing collapse of international humanitarian solidarity, and can only lead to further destabilisation and misery in the region and beyond. UNHCR has set itself the target of securing the resettlement of 130,000 of the most vulnerable refugees by 2016. That is a beginning, and the world’s wealthier countries should work to achieve it. As long as the violence inside Syria rages on and the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, those inside the country will keep trying to get out. The responsibility to shelter those fleeing lies with the whole world. Meeting it grows daily more urgent. The gentle art of dawa By Sameen Tahir Khan On a flight from Seattle, I sat next to a programmer from India! Arpita was from Kolkata, a very pleasant, intelligent woman. “Do you work for Microsoft? I asked.” She smiled and said, “No, I’m not that smart” (she was being humble). She was very interested in Islam and said there was something bothering her and if I could address that. “On a trip to Turkey, I went to see the Blue Mosque. I met the imam of the mosque there and I asked him about heaven and he told me quite bluntly that unless I was a Muslim I could never go there. I asked him, why? I am not a bad person, but he said, no, hell is your destination if you are not a Muslim.” Arpita then looked at me and said, “Was he telling the truth?” I must admit, this was a tough question for me. I unfortunately did not know enough to tackle that question. I told her perhaps the imam meant those associating partners with God will not go to heaven, where even Muslims will go to hell if they associate partners with Allah. She told me she was upset for days as the Imam had been too blunt and
rigid. I told her to pray to God for guidance on this and all matters. I told her what I knew about Islam and its beauty. How Islam taught us to be non-materialistic, kind to all beings including non-Muslims. How it was against the mistreatment of women, even animals. Arpita was reading a book on Afghanistan about how oppressive life was over there especially for women. I told Arpita, “Don’t look at the bad deeds of some Muslims, look at beauty of Islam. Honor killing, forced marriages, blowing up schools are all things Islam strongly prohibits.” I told her to read the translation of the Qur’an with explanations. Arpita asked me at the end, “Are you a preacher?” I laughed and said, “I wish.” And she said, “You are so positive. ” Then she meticulously took down the names of all the scholars I had mentioned and said she would definitely check them out. Talking to Arpita reminded me how important it is to convey Islam in the spirit that its very name reflects, Islam from Salam or peace. If we look at the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) we can

Even Allah says in the Qur’an in surah Nahl: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is (rightly) guided.” (16: 125) I remember when we were young and attended Islamic lectures our teacher used to speak against putting on makeup and how people getting their eyebrows shaped would burn in hell and how women must obey their husbands. They never told us about the rights of women or the importance of good manners and good grooming. When I attended a similar lecture in Dammam with my own teenage daughters, I was pleasantly surprised by the lady who lectured the girls on covering up. She told them, when you go to a gold shop, you see many people looking at the ornaments, handling them, haggling over them. Then you see one important person coming up, the jeweler takes him inside the room, gives him cold drink and snacks, opens his safe and takes out the best, most expensive jewelery which is not even on

display for the common man. That is how Allah respects you. A woman’s beauty and aura is not for everyone to look at, but that one special person who will be her husband. A lady once told me that she didn’t like to sit with religious people because they were always talking about hell fire, “It’s depressing.” I had told her, “but hell fire is real” you should be glad someone reminds you of it. Perhaps I should have mentioned heaven and what beautiful and amazing things there are. In the US I have met several converts who told me they were attracted to Islam only because they had met a Muslim whose character, or dealing or kindness impressed them. As Muslims we must take every opportunity we get to be the best ambassador of Islam and remember what our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Indeed gentleness adds more beauty to the atmosphere it reposes therein.”(Muslim). In times when Islam is portrayed as a violent religion and Muslims as terrorists, we must make the extra effort to reintroduce Islam to ourselves and others as it truly is, a progressive, peaceful and much needed religion.
12 L O C A L SMS fundraiser exceeds target Muharrum 21 1436H November 28, 2014
The Surrey Muslim School held a successful fundraising dinner on Sunday, November 16th, 2014. Founded in 2001, with 30 students, the school has been slowly increasing in size over the years. Many of you will recall that the school moved from rented spaces in 2 Masjids to a single leased facility that was later purchased. These major moves/purchases have occurred within the past 2 years, while at the same time the enrolment has mushroomed from 150 to over 240 students. The community’s support for the fundraiser was evident with the dinner being sold out before the evening began. This unexpected demand did not wane, and the organizers had to scramble as lines began to form outside the hall of people wanting to buy tickets at the door. This resulted in an extra 14 tables needing to be setup as the evening progressed, with close to 120 extra adults. The organizers apologized for delays in seating and meal service, and asked for the audience’s understanding and sabr; and based on the collections, it looks like they did understand that the cause was worthy, for our children, and in the path of Islam. The master of ceremonies duty was shared between the SMS Principal Br Ebrahim Bawa and two of his grade seven students, Ibrahim Kaneko and Saiyad Shah. The Quran Tilawat was by Misbah Memon and Ibrahim Kaneko, which was translated by Sumiyah Noor, also from Grade 7. The Principal officially thanked the local Muslim businesses that had sponsored the dinner and thanked the Surrey Muslim Community for supporting the school for over 10 years. According to Principal Bawa, SMS’s small class sizes and emphasis on Islamic knowledge and values is designed to produce students who are prepared to succeed in high school, and are model Muslims and citizens. He highlighted that students who attend SMS come from as far as Abbotsford and Coquitlam. The captivating performances by Grade 6 students on Muslim unity, and Nasheeds by grade three, four, five and six students had the audience standing up and cheering. Br. Faisal Abdul Aziz, BCMA VP Education and Chairperson of the school’s Board of Education welcomed and thanked all the attendees, and introduced the various teams. The status of the previous year’s fundraising projects were presented including; a new classroom, wudu rooms/washroom, gym flooring, PC lab, and a school wide intercom/PA system. Br. Faisal encouraged the audience to participate in the running of the affairs of BCMA that belongs to all of us. He specifically asked parents to join the PAC (Parents’ Advisory Council) and shape the direction of the school. He also recognized two members of the community who
have played significant roles in the new property and called on Br. Musa Ismail (BCMA president) to present certificates. One was to Br Malik Irfan for his role in the lease/purchase and for the handover role he played for the property; and the second was to Br Nabi Dean for the project management work he did to construct very large wudu rooms, washrooms, class renovations, all of which were completed within a tight 4 week window during the summer break. The plan for the fundraising target of $75 thousand was showcased and includes a children’s playground, the remainder of washroom upgrades, a school bus, and IT infrastructure. A student video asking for support complemented the presentation. Br Musa Ismail followed by thanking all the staff and volunteers who had organized the fundraising event. He also provided more information on the work done by Br Malik Irfan and Nabi Dean during this past summer to make the school purchase and renovations a reality as well as the heroic efforts by Br Shaimud Dean to ready the school in time for opening day. Following Isha Salaah, Shaykh Abdulbary Yaha began the fundraising program. His energetic and enthusiastic presentation inspired the audience to donate $82,000.00 to the school. He stressed the importance of supporting Muslim schools financially, and reminded all the guests that school donations are a form of Sadaqat al Jarria; recurring and compounding rewards. Guests donated in large and small amounts via cheque, cash, and by credit card. Several parents and students also donated original Islamic artwork to the school, while a sister donated a gold bracelet to be auctioned off. The evening concluded with a Dua from Mufti Aasim Rashid, himself a parent of the Surrey Muslim School, who espoused its accomplishments in a very short period and asked for people to get involved, rather than sit at the sidelines. Alhamdullilah, it was a sign of unity and progress for our community as the different BCMA branches competed to support the school in a big way. This included the BCMA Women’s chapters, BC Muslim School PAC and local Muslim businesses, all recognizing the value that a strong Islamic school system provides to our community. Racism Divides Americans

Beyond doubt, the said bitter reality still haunts Americans. That’s why, the ‘civil rights leaders’ have been advocating for self reliance for people of color because they realised that people of color were brainwashed to become dependent on the Whites for the necessities of life. The curse of racism includes individual bias, stereotyping, prejudice, hate-mongering, hate speech, assaults and murder to anti-immigrant actions, labor market segmentation, police brutality, racial profiling, and unequal incarceration rates. However, the “civil rights movement” successfully minimized white privilege with the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. By ending Jim Crow segregation and overturning racist electoral practices, these laws instituted an “equal playing field” — disparities in life-chance could no longer be made on the basis of race. US sectarianism: A nation still divided
By Khaled A Beydoun On Monday, the Ferguson grand jury ruled that there was no probable cause to bring any charges against Darren Wilson. On August 9, Wilson, a white policeman, shot and killed Michael Brown, while the 18-year-old black teen was walking down the street in Ferguson, Missouri. During the 110 days since Brown was pronounced dead, Ferguson has vividly revealed the US’ racial faultlines, unveiled its stark, systemic inequities, and showcased to the world the racial sectarianism that still stratifies and segregates people in the US. “A system cannot fail those it was never built to protect,” wrote W.E.B. Dubois, indicting structural inequity and exclusion as the very seeds that rear racial segregation. Dubois’ US was marred by formal segregation. A segregation that not only marked black and brown Americans as inferior; but relentlessly exposed them to legal processes that vilified their racial identities, and exonerated their assailants. Exactly 110 years later, Dubois’ words have never been more prescient. The thinker’s words foretell a divide that continues to fracture the US along racial lines, and exposes its most marginalised communities to structures that continuously persecute - rather than protect - them. Racial inequities on the ground, perpetuated by politics, law and their slanted processes, drive the racial sectarianism that marred the US at its inception, middle and current passages. US’ tribal divisions “Sectarianism” may seem both geographically and conceptually foreign to the modern American experience. First, it connotes a primordial and tribal division commonly used to characterise warring factions in the Middle East or the “Muslim world”. Second, it is a discord and division almost exclusively linked to religion. Outrage across US over Ferguson ruling Yet, if religious rifts are the primary lines of conflict in the Middle East, then the US’ ungodly racial divide looms as its most salient spaces of tension and violence, discord and disenfranchisement. Racism historically, and still today, stands as the US’ sectarianism. American sectarianism is nurtured by two complimentary myths. The first holds that, “racism is individual and aberrational”, stripping political, economic, and legal structures from any responsibility in perpetuating racial
inequality. The second myth contends that these very structures are “colour-blind and objective systems, which function without racial bias”. Together, these myths not only caricature the meaning of racism, and vastly narrow its scope, but more importantly, conceal how government structures continually reinforce the US’ racial sectarianism. The population of Ferguson is 67 percent black. However, 50 of its 53 policemen, including Wilson, are white. The grand jury, which ultimately decided to bring no charges, comprised nine whites and three black members. Ferguson was only demographically a “black community”. Its political institutions, police force, and grand jury were overwhelmingly white. Therefore, racial division in Ferguson aligned neatly with power disparities, which became blatantly clear when the grand jury rendered a definition of justice that served the interests of one officer, Wilson, instead of the collective concerns of the 14,200 black residents of Ferguson. Blacks simply lived in Ferguson, while whites controlled it. Asymmetrical sectarianism In both its religious and racial form, sectarianism is seldom symmetrical. Typically, one faction holds comparative supremacy within the halls of power, and therefore, manipulates legal processes to its advantage and to the detriment of its rival faction. Popular illustrations of war-torn Arab and Muslim states overwhelmingly centre on the sectarian splits, which consequently simplify the distinct and complicated crises taking place from state to state. Yet, American racial hostilities and division is manifested by embedded and still growing racial segregation in virtually every major US city; the consistent assault and erosion of affirmative action by the courts and through the ballot box; an aggregate prison population that is 61 percent black and Latino; and police officers that profile, persecute and slay black and brown youth without punishment. While neatly crafted myths perpetuate a thin
law isn’t applied equally. “I also appeal to the law enforcement officials in Ferguson and the region to show care and restraint in managing peaceful protests that may occur,” he said. “As they do their jobs in the coming days, they need to work with the community, not against the community, to distinguish the handful of people who may use the grand jury’s decision as an excuse for violence ... from the vast majority who just want their voices heard around legitimate issues in terms of how communities and law enforcement interact. Mr Obama said the decision of the grand jury was always going to be a subject of intense disagreement across the country and called for calm. “First and foremost, we are a nation built on the rule of law,” he said. “And so we need to accept that this decision was the grand jury’s to make. All eyes now are focused on Ferguson, where the evening announcement came as an alliance of more than 50 protest groups were gearing up for mass demonstrations against the decision. Protests are also planned in more than 75 other U.S. cities right from Los Angeles to New York. The protesters/marchers waved signs and shouted chants of “Hands Up! Don’t shoot,” the slogan that has become a rallying cry in protests over police killings across the U.S. The demand is arrest Darren Wilson. Make it happen, Mr. President. You have the power insofar as no one can really stop you from doing whatever you want to do. Then inform the mob that, having gotten what they wanted, they can all just go home. As discussed above, “Jury found ‘no probable cause exists’ to file charges.” “They discussed and debated the evidence among themselves
before arriving at their collective decision,” Mr McCulloch said. “After their exhaustive review of the evidence, the grand jury deliberated over two days, making their final decision.” The shooting death of the unarmed teen ager, a resident of the predominantly AfricanAmerican city of Ferguson, sparked days of riots and protests. The grand jury, with nine white and three black members, had been meeting since late August and heard evidence including witnesses called by the prosecution as well as a private pathologist hired by the Brown family to review the shooting. Furthermore, lawyers for the victim’s family claimed the teen was trying to surrender when he was shot at least six times, while Wilson’s supporters said he feared for his life and opened fire in self-defence. Brown was suspected of having stolen cigars from a nearby convenience store shortly before the incident. Recommendation: An environment of the existing deep mistrust between communities needs to be replaced through media and during the schooling years to ensure national unity based on equality rights with guaranteed fair treatment for all. The police must be focused on “to serve and to protect.” Defusing the crisis depends on Mr Obama as he enjoys the right of issuing executive order to solve the crisis when Congress and the Senate are inactive. after racially charged riots By Ellen Wulfhorst, Daniel Wallis and Edward McAllister, Reuters The St. Louis area braced for another day of protests on Tuesday after a grand jury cleared a white police officer in the fatal August shooting of an unarmed black teenager, sparking a night of violent and racially charged rioting. About a dozen buildings in suburban Ferguson, Missouri, burned overnight and police fired tear gas and flash-bang canisters at protesters, said St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar. Sixty-one people were arrested, police said. Although no serious injuries were reported, Belmar said the rioting on Monday night and early Tuesday morning was “much worse” than the disturbances that erupted in the immediate aftermath of the shooting of Michael Brown, 18, by police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. Protests also were staged on Monday night in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Oakland, California, and Washington, D.C., over a case that has highlighted long-standing racial tensions not just in predominantly black Ferguson but across the United States. In the city of St. Louis, where windows were broken and traffic was briefly stopped on a major highway overnight, Police Chief Sam Dotson vowed to have a larger police response on Tuesday night. “A large presence, very early on, will be a deterrent,” said Dotson, whose jurisdiction does not include Ferguson. “We’ll have resources deployed.” Schools in Ferguson and its surrounding cities said they planned not to open on Tuesday. Protesters planned to demonstrate on Tuesday outside the courthouse in Clayton, Missouri, where the grand jury sat. The rioting came despite calls for calm from officials ranging from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to President Barack Obama. Activist veneer of racial harmony, Ferguson offers a sharp dose of the US’ unequal reality, which pierces through that veneer to reveal the racial sectarianism that still divides the US. A sectarianism where the most vulnerable are victimised, the racially excluded are vast villains, and the law and its processes are deployed to deepen primordial racial inequities. The nihilism and hopelessness embodied by protesters in Ferguson are, echoing Dubois, bred by a system that continuously strips a people of its dignity. Racial rifts and conflicts continue to fortify

TWO SIDES OF TRAGEDY Wilson could have faced charges ranging from involuntary manslaughter to first-degree murder and Brown’s family said through their lawyers that they were “profoundly disappointed” by the grand jury’s finding. US sectarianism. A sectarianism that simultaneously rips this country apart as we gaze eastward, and ridicule distant peoples for their backward, tribal and primal divides which deters us acknowledging our own sectarian crisis, even as it unfolds in our own back yards and on our televisions. BC Pipeline Story Fueling our Growth TransCanada commissioned the Conference Board of Canada (CBoC) to conduct an economic analysis of the Energy East Pipeline Project, aimed at understanding the benefits from coast to coast. The findings show that the proposed pipeline will create thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in government tax revenues over the short and long term. How to Read the Study: Research Methodology The CBoC used Statistics Canada’s Input/ output model to estimate how the Energy East project would contribute to gross domestic product (GDP), tax revenues and job creation across Canada. The Input/Output model measures direct, indirect and induced economic effects of large infrastructure projects in Canada. How to Read the Study: Jobs During the first 20 years of operation, Energy East is expected to sustain 3,273 full-time equivalent (FTE) direct and indirect jobs across Canada. A direct FTE is considered a job working approximately 40 hours per week and is directly associated with the development or operation of Energy East. For example, when TransCanada hires workers to build the pipeline, this is a direct job. An indirect FTE is a job working approximately 40 hours per week in a related industry such as supply chain, manufacturing or other support services that would build or maintain the pipeline. Oil and Pipelines 101 What is crude oil? Crude oil is a fossil fuel or hydrocarbon made primarily of hydrogen and carbon. Depending on sulphur content, crude oil ranges from light to heavy and from sweet to sour. Energy East will move a variety of crude types, including conventional crude oil, diluted bitumen and synthetic crude oil. What is bitumen? Found in Alberta’s oil sands, among other places, bitumen is a raw material that must be either upgraded to a synthetic specification, similar to West Texas light crude to become a synthetic crude oil or blended with light petroleum products, such as gasoline, to become diluted bitumen. Diluted bitumen is physically and chemically indistinguishable from other heavy crude

Energy East Pipeline oils. How is bitumen extracted? There are two ways. The first, called “surface mining,” involves using large trucks and shovels to scrape up oil collected in the sand. The second, called “in-situ production”, involves injecting steam into the ground that heats up the bitumen, combines it with water and forces it to the surface where it can be separated from the water. What is pipeline oil used for? About 75 per cent of Canada’s crude oil is processed into transportation fuel. Energy East will transport oil to refineries in Eastern Canada where it would be used to create asphalt, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, waxes, plastics and other oil products. Why is oil so important? We tend to think of oil as something we only need to run our cars. In fact, hundreds of everyday products are made from crude oil, including cosmetics, carpets, glasses, panty hose, heart valves, soap, electronics and plastics. With skis, toothpaste, life jackets, refrigerators, sweaters, tires, helmets, pillows, golf balls, aspirin, soft contact lenses, hair colouring, telephones and bandages also requiring petroleum, it’s no wonder that Canadians currently produce about 3.4 million barrels of oil per day and consume about 1.85 million barrels per day. (Source: Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Crude Oil Forecast, June 2013) Pipeline Facts What is a transmission pipeline? Pipelines safely transport natural gas or oil over long distances. There are many types, but Energy East is a “transmission pipeline.” Used to transport crude oil, transmission pipelines are about 508 to 1,219 millimetres in diameter. There are more than 96,000 kilometres of transmission pipelines in Canada and about 480,000 kilometres in the United States. Our wholly-owned natural gas pipelines travel more than 57,000 kilometres alone — a length that can wrap around the world 1.5 times! What are pipelines made of? Pipelines are made of long, flat sheets of high-strength steel that are shaped into tubes and welded together. The sections converted from existing gas pipeline are 1,067 millime-
tres in diameter and the new pipeline sections of Energy East will be 1,067 millimetres in diameter. What measures are taken to ensure pipelines are built safely? Pipelines such as Energy East conform to the highest design standards. Only top-quality steel and welding techniques are used. Extra precautions are taken at road, railway and river crossings or near denser population areas. X-rays or ultrasonic processes are used to check welds during construction, and pipes are pressure-tested afterwards to identify any defects. Coatings are used to protect against corrosion. TransCanada has earned a reputation for delivering energy safely and efficiently, and Energy East will be one of the most technologically-advanced and rigorously designed pipelines ever built. What are pump stations? Pipelines such as Energy East use a series of pump stations that essentially “push” the oil along the pipeline. These pumps turn on and off automatically, reacting to fluctuations in the oil flow. Pump stations are monitored using sophisticated control systems that continuously monitor line pressure, valves, temperatures, flows and other data. What measures are taken to operate pipelines safely? Pipelines such as Energy East are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and equipped with shut-off valves that can be automatically closed if the pressure drops inside the pipeline. Highly-trained personnel perform regular inspections of the pipe and surrounding area using low-flying helicopters, planes and all-terrain vehicles. Safety specialists and emergency response teams are always on call. Energy East Benefits Overview A stronger economy The 20 year operation phase will add $24.9 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and directly benefits all provinces and territories. Prepare for the citizenship test The citizenship test is the last step before the citizenship ceremony for nearly any person who wants to become a Canadian citizen. You need to prepare for the test and know what happens after you take it.
Who has to take the test?
You must take the citizenship test if: you are between the ages of 18 and 54 when you apply for citizenship, and you meet the basic conditions for citizenship. Determine your eligibility – Citizenship • Age, • Permanent resident status, • Time you have lived in Canada, • Language skills, • Criminal history (prohibitions) and how well you know Canada. As a result of 2014 changes to the Citizenship Act, if you have served in or with the Canadian Armed Forces, you might be able to apply through a fast-track process. We look at how long you have served our country, instead of how long you lived in Canada. Foreign military members do not need to be a permanent resident of Canada. *Language abilities Canada has two official languages—English and French. To become a citizen, you must show that you have adequate knowledge of one of these languages. In general, this means you can:take part in short, everyday conversations about common topics; understand simple instructions, questions and directions;use basic grammar, including simple structures and tenses; and show that you know enough common words and phrases to answer questions and express yourself. If you are between 18 and 54, you must send documents with your citizenship application that prove you can speak and listen in English or French at this level. Use our wizard to see if you have the proof we will accept. The citizenship application guide also contains the type of proof we will accept. Second, we will note how well you commu-
nicate when you talk to staff or a citizenship officer interviews you. A citizenship officer will make the final decision on your application, including how well you can communicate in English or French. Get your test date:
We will send you a notice with the time and date for your test. If you are not available on that date, contact the Call Centre. We will schedule your test on a different date. If you do not attend the test, you must contact the Call Centre or we will close your application. Taking the test: Your test may be written or oral. We decide if your test will be written or oral based on a number of things. For example, if you have trouble reading and writing in English or French, you will have an oral test. Oral tests are done through an interview with a citizenship officer. When you come for your written or oral test, bring: • The original documents you sent with your application and • Any passport or travel documents you used in the four years before you applied.

If you are asked to go to an interview, but you applied for citizenship with your family by sending your applications in the same envelope, we will process your application separately from your family’s unless you want them to be processed together.
Prepare for the citizenship ceremony
The citizenship ceremony is the final step to becoming a Canadian citizen. You will take the Oath of Citizenship and get your citizenship certificate there. We will send you a notice telling you to attend a ceremony and take the oath, if you meet all of the conditions to:become a Canadian citizen, or get your Canadian citizenship back. The notice will tell you when and where the ceremony will be held. Who must go?
Adults and children aged 14 or over must go to the citizenship ceremony and take the oath. Parents will get certificates of citizenship for their children under age 14. Children under age 14 do not have to go, but they are welcome to do so.
What to bring?
You must bring all of your original immigration documents. If you have a permanent resident card, you must also bring it even if it has expired. If you became a permanent resident before June 28, 2002, you must bring your Record of Landing (IMM 1000). If you have both of those documents, bring both of them to the ceremony. At the citizenship ceremony, we will welcome you into the Canadian family. You will accept the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship. A citizenship judge usually presides over the ceremony. He or she leads the Oath of Citizenship. Many people will take the oath with you. If you want to swear the oath on your holy book, bring it with you. Once you have taken the Oath of Citizenship, you will be a Canadian citizen. We will give you your citizenship certificate. You must use it to prove that you are a Canadian citizen and to show the date that you became one. Keep it in a safe place. Your citizenship certificate is not a travel document. You need to get a Canadian passport to travel outside Canada. As a new citizen, you must wait at least two business days after your ceremony before you can apply for services, such as applying for a passport.

Not doing so can in fact lead to a host of health issues.
Correct sitting position
While working for long hours at your desks or in front of your computers sit up with your back straight and your shoulders back, with your buttocks touching the back of your chair. Of course it goes without saying that the choice of office chair is also crucial.Be careful how you sit and stand; it not only keeps the bones and joints in correct alignment but also helps you look good! All three normal back (cervical, thoracic and lumbar) curves should be present while sitting. You can use a small, rolled-up towel or a lumbar roll to help you maintain the normal curves in your back. Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips. Bend your knees at a right angle. Keep your knees even with or slightly higher than your hips (use a foot rest or stool if necessary) and do not cross your legs.
Try to avoid sitting in the same position for more than 30 minutes.
Given that most of us spend our time sitting in front of desks and computers, lets start with what the correct sitting position should be. And here, an incorrect seated posture can also affect a person’s posture while standing and walking. Experts are of the opinion that people who spend too much time in front of a computer often suffer from kyphosis (one of the most common posture problems where the shoulders hunch forward, the muscles in the chest tighten, the neck and head extend toward the computer screen, and the spine is no longer vertically aligned.)
When standing up from sitting position, move to the front of the seat of your chair and stand up by straightening your legs.
Avoid bending forward at your waist. Immediately stretch your back by doing 10 standing backbends.
Correct standing position
Standing with your knees locked or hyperextended contributes to bad posture and an anterior pelvic tilt. With correct body posture, the imaginary line running down your body passes behind your kneecap and right in front of your ankle bone. Your weight should be evenly distributed on your feet — under your big toe, little toe and the heel.If you stand with weight over your heels your feet will become weak and turn inwards; this increases stress on your weight-bearing joints (ankles, knees, hips and lower back). High heels and thick-soled shoes are also bad for your posture. It is said that not wearing shoes most of your time helps build the muscles in your feet. Strong, aligned feet equate to a strong, aligned body. Walk on the sand or grass to help build up mobility, stability and strength in your feet.
An Informative workshop held on Diabetes
“ On world diabetes day the Community Development Group of Pakistani Canadian Culture Association (PCCA), BC organized ”An Informational Workshop” on Diabetes for the community on November 14. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness about the diseases and share professionals’ opinions. Lubna Zaidi, a nutritionist presented her views on the diet management plan. She said with better diet control and daily exercise the diabetic patients can live longer and avoid any medical complications. Nadeem Zia a volunteer for Open Door project of Open door for Success Association and Basit Khan Pharmacist manager of Sullivan Pharmacy, were of the view that diabetes patients should take extra care of their daily
diets. They underlined the point that everyone should undergo yearly medical checkup to make sure they are not per-diabetes or diabetes patient. The sooner the disease diagnosed the better is for them. The message of the evening came out strong from both pharmacists that everyone should take Vitamin-D daily. In the end Sadia Sameeullah the head of the Community Development Group, PCCA and Naveed Wariach, President PCCA, thanked Mr Sukhi Bath, the owner of Sukhi Bath Motors, for providing the venue.” PCCA appreciate your interest in promoting the community activities and look forward to have cordial relations with your esteemed organization.
Correct position for sleeping
No matter what position you lie in, the pillow should be under your head, but not your shoulders, and should only be thick enough so that your head is not either too high or too low. Try to sleep in a position which helps you maintain the curve in your back (on your back with a pillow under your knees or a lumbar roll under your lower back; or on your side with your knees slightly bent). Do not sleep on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest. Try to avoid sleeping on your stomach, especially on a saggy mattress, as this can cause back strain and can be uncomfortable for your neck. Select a firm mattress that does not sag. If necessary, place a board under your mattress. If you are in the habit of sleeping on
a soft surface, changing to a hard surface may be painful. When standing up from the lying position, turn on your side, draw up both knees and swing your legs on the side of the bed. Sit up by pushing yourself up with your hands. Avoid bending forward at your waist. Source :Dawn Newspaper

Anaheim Union Voters Select What is your life’s Nation’s First Sri-Lankan purpose? American as Elected Official
Anaheim, Calif. – History was made on November 4, when Mr. Al Jabbar became the nation’s first—and only—Sri LankanAmerican to win elected office. Mr. Jabbar trounced his opponents to gain a seat on the Board of Trustees of the Anaheim Union High School District. He had been unanimously appointed to the board in January 2013 to fill a vacant spot. Mr. Jabbar said he is humbled by his victory, and eager to continue tackling the challenges facing the AUHSD, which serves almost 32,000 7-12 students in the communities of Anaheim, Cypress, Buena Park, La Palma, and Stanton. “I am extremely grateful to the voters for allowing me to continue to serve them,” Mr. Jabbar said. “I am also incredibly proud of the fact that I am representing the greater Sri Lankan community with this victory. I take seriously the responsibility that comes with being the first elected official of Sri Lankan heritage. I hope my American success story inspires others to dream big, accomplish their goals, and give back to the community.” “Al is a public servant in the finest sense
of the word,” said fellow board member Annemarie Randle-Trejo. “He is very hard working and charismatic, with an easy way of relating to people. Parents absolutely love him, and I can see why. The Anaheim Union High School District is very lucky to have him as a board member.” AUHSD superintendent Michael Matsuda echoed Ms. Randle-Trejo’s praise. “Al really gets where we need to go as a school district to ensure that our students are college and career ready,” Mr. Matsuda said. “The issues that come before a school board can be very complex, and Al is not afraid to roll his sleeves up and tackle them. I am very much looking forward to working alongside him in the years to come.” During his time on the board, Mr. Jabbar sought to be a voice for parents, especially those whose second language is English. He helped oversee the full implementation of the Common Core State Standards, the restoration of programs and personnel eliminated in recent years due to the economic crisis, and the passage of Measure H, a $249 million bond measure. Mr. Jabbar said he will continue to work to raise college eligibility rates among students, and promote a 21st century curriculum outside the basic math and English courses. Mr. Jabbar’s interest in public service began while he was a student at Cypress College earning an associate’s degree in business. He served as the school’s student advocate and student body president, in addition to acting as student trustee on the North Orange County Community College Board. Mr. Jabbar then went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in marketing from California State University, Fullerton, where he served as vice president of the school’s American Marketing Association. Power Smart tips to keep you warm this winter

Our wardrobes change with the seasons, and so does our energy bill as we turn up furnaces and baseboard heaters to fight off the winter chill. But dealing with rising heating costs can be just as easy as switching your summer clothes for winter clothes. With a few do-ityourself projects, and some easy behavioural changes, you can easily keep your winter heating costs in check.
Use your thermostat wisely
Whether you have electric baseboard heaters or a furnace, keeping your thermostat under control helps you get the most out of your home heating system, while keeping your heating bill down. It may seem easy to crank the thermostat to 27 degrees and hold onto our summer clothes, but choosing a lower temperature can result in big energy savings. Most people are comfortable with the following temperatures at home: •20°C (68°F) while doing housework, and moving around your house. •21°C (70°F) C while staying stationary when reading or watching TV. •16°C (61°F) while sleeping. Find the temperature that’s most comfortable for you, but remember that every degree above 20 degrees can increase your
household heating costs by 5 per cent. Turning the thermostat down sounds easy, but the temptation to crank the heat and warm the room can be hard to resist. Before you turn the thermostat up, remember that it takes the same amount of time for the room to increase to 20°C whether you set the thermostat to 20°C or 30°C. Your thermostat doesn’t tell the furnace or electric baseboard heaters how fast to heat your home, only when to stop. Don’t be hesitant to turn the heat down while you’re away. With no one home, there’s no reason to keep the house at 20 degrees. Instead, dial down to 16°C. If you have electric baseboard heaters, do the same with each unoccupied room. How high is your heat while you’re out of the house?

Plug them into a power strip (along with other electronics) with an occupancy sensor to ensure they are only on when the room is occupied. OpenDoor Introduction Ceremony held in Surrey
The Opendoor for Success Association, a not-for-profit society registered in B.C, held an introduction ceremony for the OpenDoor project at a local hall in Surrey on Nov 08.. The society has been established by a group of professionals from the healthcare industry comprising of Pharmacists, Physicians, IT professionals, Business Managers and Community members. It was a successful event where over fifty professional pharmacists, doctors and other respected community members actively participated. During the ceremony Mr. Nadeem Zia, President of the Association shared the vision, mission and the objectives of OpenDoor. He shared the achievement of the OpenDoor project so far and the future road map. OpenDoor has launched its website (www.opendoor.cc) which is open to all for seeking free information, knowledge and professional coaching on healthcare related topics. The Association has recently started its fund raising campaign and awareness using RocketHub and within a couple of weeks has received over $ 1000 in donations. The
money collected is to be used for upgrading the website to an interactive forum where the recipients can attend coaching sessions conducted by subject matter experts, and acquire certification on various health related topics. The President appealed to the participants for their support and also to share the information on social media. After the presentation a number of guests shared their views, appreciating the work being done by OpenDoor and committed to continue their support in the future. Financial Health of Canadians Major Cause of Stress Canadian Youth Advised To Start Planning Now In its sixth year, Financial Planning Week (November 16-22) promotes financial planning as fundamental to the financial wellbeing of Canadians. “One of the main causes of stress in Canadians is financial health (according to the 2014 Sun Life Financial Health Index). The popularity of Ashton College’s Financial Services programs is testament to more and more Canadians wanting to take charge of their finances by seeking sound advice from a qualified professional” says Colin Fortes, President of Ashton College. “Time is an investor’s best friend: the earlier you get started, the more comfortable you’ll be come retirement. That’s why I encourage all young Canadians to address their financial health early, in any way they can, to better prepare for the many challenges they’ll face later in life.” Alex Chan, Certified Financial Planner at IDC Worldsource uses the following analogy for young people looking to get their financial health in order: “Start small and get into the habit of saving. For example, if you go to Starbucks twice a day, that’s $10 a day, $300 a month. If from 25 years of age you save $300 a month and get a decent rate of return for 10 years, you could be a millionaire by the time you retire.” Certified Financial Planner Becky Wong has been an instructor at Ashton College for more than a decade. Becky advises: “Start working with a Financial Planner as early as possible. Parents, give your 18 year old a head start by introducing them to your Financial Planner. Your child may not have much money yet, but a planner can help them set good financial habits for the future.”
With more than 17,500 Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) across Canada, Becky recommends interviewing them first. “When researching, find the right CFP for you. Ask them how many years of experience they have, what area they specialize in (tax, estate planning, retirement etc.), and what their typical clients look like. Also find out if the CFP will work with a minimal asset size. Some CFPs will only work with you if you have a minimum worth of say $200,000.” Chan, who holds five professional designations (including two from Ashton College) adds: “Do a background search on the advisor and the firm. Ask what kind of financial plan they have in place themselves and how they are saving for their own retirement. Get them to provide references from other long-term clients. Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC) website offers a search function to find local Certified Financial Planners. Another great way to find an advisor is through a recommendation, so ask around.” Chan says of his 25 years of experience in the finance industry: “There are constant changes with tax regulations, products, companies, fund managers and so on. But the one thing that has stayed exactly the same all along is people’s goals. MYC’s Cuisine of Cultures – Absolutely Awesome
On November 15, The Muslim Youth Centre held an International Food Festival. The MYC was buzzing with Brothers and Sisters from all over the globe sharing and selling their mouth-watering dishes of food and desserts. The International Cuisine Event is one of the most popular events at the MYC. It was very successful with dozens of families from our community in attendance. It was extremely heart-warming to see our Brothers, Sisters, Youth and Children at the MY enjoying each country’s cuisine and exchanging compliments of how tasty and delicious their
foods and delicatessen were. The countries that displayed and sold their foods and desserts were: Afghanistan, Burma, Canada, China, East Turkistan, Egypt, Fiji, Guyana, India, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, East & South Africa and Turkey. The chefs humbly accepted the MYC’s requests to cook their foods and desserts and have them sold with all proceeds going to the MYC. For this we are deeply appreciative and thankful for your kind and humble effort. This event was not only to taste the best foods on earth, but it was to bring people together to share what Allah has
given us and to get to know each other’s culture and country through the means of what is most liked by people………which is food. The MYC’s Management Team would like to congratulate the chefs, the volunteers, and everyone who participated in this event. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Christian Paradis Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie Not only is violence against women and girls a grave violation of human rights, it is also a significant barrier to achieving equality between women and men, peaceful societies and sustainable development. Sexual and gender-based violence prevents women and girls from reaching their full potential and contributing to their communities and countries. The physical, psychological, economic and social costs of violence against women are devastating: girls drop out school, diseases like HIV/AIDS spread more easily, higher numbers of mothers and children die needlessly, poverty grows. Yet, we live in a world where, according to the World Health Organization, one in three women experiences physical or sexual assault in their lifetime.
At different times in their lives, women and girls are at risk of experiencing different forms of violence: child, early and forced marriage, female genital mutilation, forced prostitution and trafficking, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, and sexual violence and rape. In fragile and conflict-affected communities and where extremism and terrorism fester, women and girls are particularly vulnerable as sexual and gender-based violence is often used as a tactic of war. We know that violence against women is driven by persistent and intersecting forms of discrimination against women and the unequal social status of women and men and girls and boys. But we also know that women and girls are powerful agents of change. When women and girls are empowered and when gender inequalities are addressed, people are safer and healthier, opportunities for development expand and everyone benefits. We also know that educated girls are less likely to marry early, suffer domestic violence and live in poverty. Promoting equality between women and men has a multiplier effect on advancing all of our development goals. That’s why the Harper Government takes a
comprehensive approach to promoting and protecting the human rights of women and girls in line with the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Gender equality is also integrated in all of Canada’s international development programming and humanitarian assistance efforts because we know that sexual and gender-based violence is ultimately about the status of women in our societies. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, where sexual violence is widespread, Canada supported a comprehensive approach to fighting sexual violence. Since 2006, over 60,000 survivors of sexual and gender-based violence received health and psycho-social support and care, 15,000 survivors acquired new skills to help them earn a decent living, 5,000 survivors received legal assistance, and hundreds of perpetrators were convicted. To build on these results, Canada is now working to increase access to justice in underserved areas, establish appropriate mechanisms to investigate sexual crimes and prosecute offenders, and build the capacity and independence of the judiciary in order to ensure that offenders
are brought to justice. Our government is also supporting a United Nations Population Fund initiative to prevent sexual and gender-based violence during humanitarian crises and emergencies. The project is delivering training on survivor-centred care and working to improve the quality of and women’s access to the services they need to survive sexual violence. Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. By advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls, we can—with persistence and through collective global efforts—eliminate discrimination and violence against women. By doing this, women and girls will enjoy their full human rights, we will make progress toward sustainable development for all, and we will improve peace and security in the world.
World Diabetes day is observed on November 14. This year’s slogan is “Let’s take control of diabetes. Now.” World Diabetes day was created in 1991 when the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization joined together to bring attention to the public for the threat of diabetes in their health. In 2007 the United Nations approved the resolution to celebrate November 14th as World Diabetes Day. World Diabetes Day will allow governments to outline proper support needed for diabetic patients and raise recognition to diabetes. World Diabetes Day marks the celebration of Frederick Banting’s birthday. Frederick Banting and Charles Best created an idea of medicine to help diabetic patients. Which led to insulin, discovered in 1922. More than two million Canadians currently have type 1 and type 2 diabetes. As many as one third of these people are unaware they have this condition. It is estimated that over three million Canadians were diagnosed with diabetes by 2010. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90 per cent of all diagnosed cases and is one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada, with over 60,000 new cases yearly. What is Diabetes? Diabetes is caused by too little of insulin, resistance to insulin or sometimes both. A
person with diabetes has high blood sugar because: -the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin -the muscle, fat, and liver cells don’t respond to the insulin properly -or both above Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas to control the blood sugar. Type of Diabetes: There are three major types of diabetes: -Type 1 Diabetes: usually diagnosed in the childhood stages. Type 1 diabetes is when the body make too little of insulin or no insulin at all. -Type 2 Diabetes: more common than type 1 diabetes and often times people don’t know they have it. Usually occurs in adults. Type 2 diabetes is where the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin to keep the blood glucose levels normal because the body won’t respond to insulin. -Gestational Diabetes: usually occurs in pregnant women at any time and they develop high blood glucose. These women who have gestational diabetes during pregnancy have a higher risk for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease later in life. Controlling diabetes The onset of type 2 diabetes can be delayed by increasing physical activity, healthy eat-
ing and losing weight. Controlling levels of glucose and levels of insulin, which help the body use glucose for energy, are both keys to managing type 2 diabetes. Given the progressive nature of the disease, most people living with type 2 diabetes may require multiple medications with different mechanisms of action to achieve optimal glycemic control and to manage co-morbidities. As beta-cell function declines, many drug therapies become less effective over time. Results from the Diabetes in Canada Evaluation (D.I.C.E.) study demonstrated that almost 50 per cent of study participants with diagnosed type 2 diabetes did not achieve the Canadian Diabetes Association Guidelines target level of blood glucose (HbA1C less than or equal to 7 per cent). The percentage of patients who did not have their blood glucose levels under control increased to more than 62 per cent among those who had type 2 diabetes for 15 years or more. This failure to achieve adequate control occurs for a variety of reasons, including: the progressive nature of the disease, some issues of tolerability and durability with available medications, and lack of adherence to lifestyle modifications and therapy. In a survey conducted in 2007 with 200 Cana-
dian physicians (160 GPs and 40 specialists) who treat people living with type 2 diabetes, one third of GPs and two-thirds of endocrinologists feel that there are not enough treatment options for their diabetes patients. Impact of living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes It is estimated that 40 per cent of Canadians with living with diabetes will develop long term complications. Canadian adults living with diabetes are twice as likely to die prematurely than nondiabetics. For people living with type 2 diabetes, life expectancy may be shortened by five to10 years. Kids are spending more time than ever in front of screens, and it may be inhibiting their ability to recognize emotions, according to new research out of the University of California, Los Angeles. The study, published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, found that sixthgraders who went five days without exposure to technology were significantly better at reading human emotions than kids who had regular access to phones, televisions and computers. The UCLA researchers studied two groups of sixth-graders from a Southern California public school. One group was sent to the Pali Institute, an outdoor education camp in Running Springs, Calif., where the kids had no access to electronic devices. For the other group, it was life as usual. At the beginning and end of the five-day study period, both groups of kids were shown images of nearly 50 faces and asked to identify the feelings being modeled. Researchers found that the students who went to camp scored significantly higher when it came to reading facial emotions or other nonverbal cues than the students who continued to have access to their media devices. “We were pleased to get an effect after five days,” says Patricia Greenfield, a senior author of the study and a distinguished professor of psychology at UCLA. “We found that the kids who had been to camp without any screens but with lots of those opportunities
A Wake-Up Call For Educators

However how many times has the door been slammed shut and your child still went out even though you had warned them. We could start off by yelling at them as soon as they come home at midnight but where would that lead us as parents. Our children will become even more distanced and isolated from us and community. Surat Āli-’ Imrān, Verse 159 : “It is by Allāh’s mercy that you are gentle to them; and had you been harsh and hardhearted, surely they would have scattered from around you.” “At risk youth are often identified after running away, skipping school, drinking under age, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism” (NCSE, 2014). These characteristics are often precursors that can lead into addictions and behavioural challenges; these youth become vulnerable. In our community there is a broken link to getting these youth help. There is nothing in our youth’s genetics, character, or personality that drives them to addictions or disruptive behaviors or isolation. The conditions in their lives that cause stress, pain, or anxiety or shame or failure lead to addictions and other behavioral challenges. They are doing damaging things to themselves like losing lives, losing family, their dignity, their bodies, their earthly possessions, and yet they
persist. It is not possible to answer the question about addictions if it is seen as weakness of will, moral failure, or a bad decision that people make. It is much deeper than that. It takes a long process to restore these struggling youth into our community. Ibrahim Long (2010) wrote an article on how to respond to at risk youth: “Muslim youth encounter biological, psychological, and social developmental changes which influence how they experience and perceive the world around them. In addition to these—and the parental pressure to maintain cultural and religious customs.” Subhan Allah, the amount of pressure put on Muslim youth is immeasurable, from the pressures at home, to school to their circle of peers they are caught in the middle. There is still hope. Al-Hamdulillāh the Muslim Food Bank has introduced the HOPE Project to support and empower our youth which will work towards creating a safe space for Muslim youth struggling with drugs, alcohol, gambling, substance abuse and mental health issue by counseling, educating and connecting them to appropriate services in the Greater Vancouver Area. There’s a big takeaway for schools, Greenfield says. “A lot of school systems are rushing to put iPads into the hands of students individually, and I don’t think they’ve thought about the [social] cost,” she explains. “This study should be, and we want it to be, a wakeup call to schools. They have to make sure their students are getting enough face-to-face social interaction. That might mean reducing screen time.” The results of the UCLA study seem to line up with prior research, says Marjorie Hogan, a pediatrician at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and a spokeswoman for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). “Common sense tells me that if a child’s laying on his or her bed and texting friends instead of getting together and saying, ‘Hey, what’s up,’ that there’s a problem there,” she says. “I want people interacting ... on a common-sense level, and an experiential level. It does concern [me].” Hogan relates the UCLA study’s findings back to research on infants. “When babies are babies, they’re learning about human interaction with face-to-face time and with speaking to parents and having things they say modeled back to them,” she says. “That need doesn’t go away.” How Much Screen Time Is Too Much? For decades the AAP has warned that children need to cut back on their screen time.
The group’s latest prescription: Entertainment “screen time” should be limited to two hours a day for children ages 3-18. And, for 2-yearolds and younger, none at all. The sixth-graders who made up the sample in the UCLA study self-reported that they spent an average of more than four hours on a typical school day texting, watching television and playing video games. The San Francisco nonprofit Common Sense Media studies screen time from birth and, in 2013, found that children under 8 (a younger sample than the kids in the UCLA study) were spending roughly two hours a day in front of a screen. “If used appropriately, it’s wonderful,” Hogan says of digital media. “We don’t want to demonize media, because it’s going to be a part of everybody’s lives increasingly, and we have to teach children how to make good choices around it, how to limit it and how to make sure it’s not going to take the place of all the other good stuff out there.” Some research suggests that screen time can have lots of negative effects on kids, ranging from childhood obesity and irregular sleep patterns to social and/or behavioral issues. “We really need to be sure that children, and probably older people, are getting enough face-to-face interaction to be competent social beings,” Greenfield says. “Our species evolved in an environment where there was only face-to face-interaction. Since we were adapted to that environment, it’s likely that our skills depend on that environment. If we reduce face-to-face interaction drastically, it’s not surprising that the social skills would also get reduced.”
Struggling Muslim Youth: The HOPE Project
What About ‘Educational Screen Time’? Research out of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a nonprofit research and production institute affiliated with the Sesame Workshop, suggests that less than half the time kids between the ages of 2 and 10 spend in front of screens is spent consuming “educational” material. The center also looked at family income as a determining factor of screen time. Lowerincome families reported that their children spent more time engaging with educational screen activities than higher-income families did. Fifty-seven percent of screen time for families earning less than $25,000 was education-focused, compared with 38 percent for families earning between $50,000 to $99,000.
How To Limit Kids’ Screen Time?
Of course, as media multiplies, it’s increasingly difficult to manage kids’ screen time. Where several decades ago, television was the only tech distraction, kids now have smartphones, tablets and laptops — not to mention electronic games. “We need to make media a part of our lives, but in a planned, sensible way,” Hogan says. Her suggestion: Families should encourage a “healthy media diet” for their children. Parents and kids should work together to decide how much time to spend with media every day, and to make sure good choices are being
The Tale of Two Frogs A group of frogs were hopping contentedly through the woods, going about their froggy business, when two of them fell into a deep pit. All of the other frogs gathered around the pit to see what could be done to help their companions. When they saw how deep the pit was, the rest of the dismayed group agreed that it was hopeless and told the two frogs in the pit that they should prepare themselves for their fate, because they were as good as dead. Unwilling to accept this terrible fate, the two frogs began to jump with all of their might. Some of the frogs shouted into the pit that it was hopeless, and that the two frogs wouldn’t be in that situation if they had been more careful, more obedient to the froggy rules, and more responsible. The other frogs continued sorrowfully shouting that they should save their energy and give up, since they were already as good as dead. The two frogs continued jumping as hard as they could, and after several hours of desperate effort were quite weary. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to the calls of his fellows. Spent and disheartened, he quietly resolved himself to his fate, lay down at the bottom of the pit, and died as the others looked on in helpless grief. The other frog continued to jump with every ounce of energy he had,
although his body was wracked with pain and he was completely exhausted. His companions began a new, yelling for him to accept his fate, stop the pain and just die. The weary frog jumped harder and harder and - wonder of wonders! Finally he leapt so high that he sprang from the pit. Amazed, the other frogs celebrated his miraculous freedom and then gathering around him asked, “Why did you continue jumping when we told you it was impossible?” Reading their lips, the astonished frog explained to them that he was deaf, and that when he saw their gestures and shouting, he thought they were cheering him on. What he had perceived as encouragement inspired him to try harder and to succeed against all odds. This simple story contains a powerful lesson. Your encouraging words can lift someone up and help him or her make it through the day. Your destructive words can cause deep wounds; they may be the weapons that destroy someone’s desire to continue trying - or even their life. Your destructive, careless word can diminish someone in the eyes of others, destroy their influence and have a lasting impact on the way others respond to them.

Although the ability to recover national assets stashed away in foreign banks should come as good news to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the timing of a recent judgment in favour of the government of Pakistan may put Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a very awkward position. A Swiss federal tribunal has ruled that a valuable jewellery set that was seized by authorities in connection with investigations into allegations of graft belonged to former president Asif Ali Zardari or the legal heirs of the late Benazir Bhutto. The set, which includes a necklace, a bracelet, a pair of earrings and a ring, is said to be valued at over $180,000. In the judgment issued on Oct 29, a copy of which is available with Dawn, the tribunal rejected ownership claims filed by Bomer Finance for the jewellery. The company was allegedly formed by Mr Jens Schlegelmilch and linked to Mr Zardari and was at the centre of the SGS-Cotecna investigation. According to Francois Roger Micheli, a counsel from the firm Python and Peter, which represented the government of
Pakistan before the Swiss tribunal, the judgment handed down states that Mr Schlegelmilch “appeared to have acted as the attorney for the BB-AAZ (Benazir Bhutto-Asif Ali Zardari) couple”. This vindicates the government’s stance and is also in line with an earlier decision by the Geneva court of appeal. Sources said that lawyers from Python and Peter have informed the government of Pakistan that this judgment meant that Bomer Finance had not been able to establish that it was the legal owner of the jewellery set. In addition, they say that Mr Schlegelmilch could not prove that he acted as a board member of the Bomer while acquiring the jewellery set. Sources close to the attorney general of Pakistan said the government would formally take a decision on the matter once it receives the original judgment through proper channels. But a copy of the tribunal’s judgment has already been sent to Islamabad. Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt refused to comment on the matter, while the Prime Minister’s Spokesperson Dr

On the other hand, given the ruling party’s recent troubles with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek, many feel that this may not be the ideal time to antagonise the Pakistan People’s Party, which has proven to be

The official Dawn spoke to, however, maintained that, “Legally, it is a strong case for the government to ensure recovery.”The case was originally filed by the attorney general for Pakistan in October of 1997 against Benazir Bhutto, her mother Nusrat Bhutto and husband Asif Ali Zardari. The jewels were among items reportedly seized the same year, but the original cases were closed in 2008 following the promulgation of the National Reconciliation Ordinance. However, the cases were reopened on the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Ajmal’s offspinner and faster delivery remedied A second unofficial test at Loughborough University has found Saeed Ajmal’s action for his stock delivery, the offspinner, and his faster balls to be legal. His action for the doosra, however, is still not below the 15-degree limit. Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy head coach Mohammad Akram confirmed the news to ESPNcricinfo. Ajmal will now undergo a third unofficial test, before returning to domestic cricket in Pakistan if cleared to bowl these two deliveries again. Once he gets enough bowling time there, the PCB will apply for him to be officially reassessed by the ICC. “He worked so hard to reduce the flex,” Akram told ESPNcricinfo. “The latest test in the biomechanics lab on Monday revealed that he has started bowling within the ICC’s 15-degree limit. His conventional offspin and
faster deliveries are very well bowled within the limit now, that’s the good news.” Ajmal’s average elbow extension was found to be more than twice the permissible limit of 15 degrees, going up to 42 degrees on average in the official tests conducted before he was suspended from bowling in September. Following that, Ajmal underwent extensive remedial work over six weeks, but had still not fallen under the 15-dregree limit when he first underwent an unofficial test at Loughborough University earlier this month. Akram said Ajmal’s medical history and several cricket injuries have been hindering his bowling action. It is understood that the PCB had maintained Ajmal had a medical condition following an accident which affected the movement of his elbow when he was previously reported in 2009, and
that had been accepted by the ICC when his action was cleared then. “There is no doubt that he is a true fighter. He, despite his medical history, has achieved a significant result in reducing the flex in his elbow. “But at the same time I would like to request ICC to give him a benefit of doubt as his chronic injuries forced him to bowl [differently], with the wrist collapsing and shoulder dislocating. This is something which is exceptional in his case.” Akram said the new testing methods were very stringent, but the PCB fully supported the ICC’s stance. “It very hard to clear tests under the ICC’s new protocols, with 3D software. Some of the very clean-looking actions via the naked eye can be questioned. There should be a benefit of doubt in testing protocol, and consideration for the exceptional cases. “But PCB has been

Drinks giant Coca-Cola has described FIFA’s handling of the controversial report into allegations of corruption surrounding the awarding of hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as “disappointing”, UK-based TV channel ITV reported. World soccer’s governing body FIFA lodged a criminal complaint in Switzerland last week against unidentified people over the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, but stood by its conclusion that any wrongdoing was not enough to jeopardise the winning Russian and Qatari bids. The action marks the first time FIFA has sought to involve law enforcement in connection with its own 18-month investigation into the bids, which concluded earlier this month with an announcement it had found no reason to overturn the decisions to hold the cup in Russia in 2018 and in Qatar in 2022. FIFA’s investigation into the bidding process has loomed over international soccer, especially in Europe,
where officials have talked publicly about quitting a global body that earns billions of dollars in revenue from selling broadcast and sponsorship rights to the world’s most popular sporting event. It looked at losing bids as well as winning bids, and at the behaviour of countless international soccer officials, so the list of those who could potentially have been named in its complaint to the Swiss authorities could span the globe. FIFA’s announcement that cleared Qatar and Russia of wrongdoing was undermined when Michael Garcia, the former US prosecutor that led FIFA’s own investigation, announced hours later that he disputed its summary of his findings. Coca-Cola, one of FIFA’s longest-standing and biggest sponsors, issued a statement criticising the fallout from the report: “Anything that detracts from the mission and ideals of the Fifa World Cup is a concern to us. The current conflicting perspectives regarding the investigation are disappointing. Our expectation is that this
will be resolved quickly in a transparent and efficient manner.” In June, Coca-Cola joined fellow FIFA sponsors Adidas, Sony and Visa by raising concerns about the impact the bribery allegations were having on the image of the game. “The negative tenor of the public debate around FIFA at the moment is neither good for football nor for FIFA and its partners,” German sportswear company Adidas, which has signed up as FIFA sponsor until 2030, extending a partnership dating back to 1970, said in a statement.
