PESHAWAR, Pakistan – The Taliban massacre that killed 148 people – mostly children – at a military-run school in northwestern Pakistan left a scene of devastation and carnage as the nation mourned and mass funerals for the victims got underway Wednesday. The attack Tuesday at the Army Public School and College in the city of Peshawar was the deadliest slaughter of innocents in the country and horrified a nation already weary of unending terrorist assaults. Blood was pooled on the floor and the stairs as media were allowed inside the school a day after the attack. Broken window glass, door frames, torn notebooks, pieces of clothing and children’s shoes were scattered about. A pair of child’s eyeglasses lay broken on the ground. meeting on counter-terrorism which decided to crush rising terrorism in the country with full force. The meeting reviewed all existing anti-terror laws and decided to bring necessary amendments in order to toughen these laws. PM’s Special Assistant Khawaja Zaheer and Law Secretary Barrister Zafarullah briefed the meeting with regards to the existing anti-terror laws and pending cases before various courts. The meeting also considered a proposal relating to establishment of special military courts for conducting speedy trials of terrorists. Speaking at the meeting, the premier said one Zarbi-Azb operation is ongoing in North Waziristan and the other operation would be carried out across the country against terrorists who are hiding in cities and villages. “There will be a decisive war against terrorists now who were responsible for attacking the Hazara town, Peshawar church and elsewhere,” PM Nawaz vowed. The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, General (retd) Qadir Baloch, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and other officials. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt and his legal team on Monday to proactively pursue cases related to terrorism in situations where courts have granted stay orders against executions. After the premier’s directives, the govern-
ders so trials could be completed at the earliest. Moreover, Radio Pakistan www.galaxytravel.ca Abdul Rauf (President) #129- 7475-135 St, has reported that the premier also directed officials to ensure fast-track prosecution of terrorists and vacate stay orders issued against their death sentences. Earlier on Friday, two former military men were executed in the Faisalabad district jail. Usman, a former soldier of the military’s medical corps, was executed in relation to the 2009 attack on the headquarters of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi. Arshad Mehmood, who was a trooper and also hanged, was among the five convicted men who were handed down death sentence for their role in an Al Qaeda-inspired assassination attempt on the life of former President Pervez Musharraf in late 2003. The hangings on Friday were the first death sentences carried out after the government ended a six-year moratorium on executions last week, a move that appears to have come in response to the Peshawar tragedy that claimed the lives of over 140 people, most of them children. On Sunday, four more convicts were executed at a district jail in Faisalabad.
Afghan security forces have launched an operation against militants in an eastern province seen as a rear base for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which carried out the Peshawar school massacre last week, officials said Monday. COAS Gen Raheel Sharif met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul in the aftermath of the school attack in Peshawar which killed 149 people, mainly children. The army chief sought Ghani’s support in defeating the TTP. TTP leader Mullah Fazlullah is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, which borders Pakistan’s restive tribal areas. Kunar has been the scene of fierce fighting between local forces and the Afghan Taliban for the past 10 days. “Afghan security forces have launched a joint antimilitant operations in several parts of Dangam district of Kunar province,” Dawlat Waziri, deputy defence ministry
spokesman, told AFP. “So far in the operation, 21 armed insurgents have been killed and 33 others wounded,” Waziri said, adding that seven security personnel were wounded. Kunar governor Shujaul Mulk Jalala said more than 1,500 Afghan Taliban fighters attacked remote villages in Dangam.Jalala said TTP and Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were also battling Afghan security forces in Dangam.Pakistan has repeatedly asked Afghanistan to capture and hand over Fazlullah. Each nation has long accused the other of allowing militants to shelter in the border region and launch bloody attacks that threaten regional stability. The Afghan Taliban have stepped up their attacks as Nato wraps up its combat operations, which end on December 31. A followup mission of about 12,500 US-led Nato troops will stay on to train and support Afghan security forces.Source AFP
Imran Khan has called upon the federal government to equip the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police with tools to gather intelligence in order to effectively counter terrorism as reported by Dawn. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman was addressing a press conference in the provincial capital of Peshawar on Monday. Terming terrorism as Pakistan’s national issue, Imran said KP was on the frontline in combating the scourge. The PTI chairman demanded the Nawaz-led government at the centre to deploy Frontier Constabulary (FC) forces in the province. “We demand the government to ensure FC deployment on its original positions — which were to protect the KP province from unrest in the tribal areas,” Imran told reporters. Though the PTI chairman commended the efforts of the police, he said it was not the job of the police to combat terrorism.“Police are not trained for this,” he said. Imran put forward three solutions to be implemented on immediate basis to minimise terrorism: KP police to be provided with interceptors to trace telephone calls, all SIMs which are not registered on the user’s identity to be declared illegal and to start integrating Fata into the national mainstream. The PTI chairman also requested the centre to financially help the KP government to look after the needs of displaced persons. “Most of the IDPs are settled in Bannu, making its population almost double...that is putting all the pressure on the provincial government,” he said. “There is no certainty as to when they will be resettled to
their hometowns, and the KP government has to facilitate their needs. The KP government is already overstretched financially with more than 70 per cent of the industries nonfunctional in the province,” he added. The cricketer-turned-politician said all stakeholders need to sit together and devise strategy to absorb the tribal areas into Pakistan. “This could be initiated by hiring its youth in the police department,” Imran said, adding that he was requesting the centre to hire 5,000 policemen from Fata and bringing them into the KP government’s domain. For a longterm solution to establish peace in the restive tribal areas, he said the government must ensure regulation of refugees coming in from Afghanistan. “On an average, 500 visas are issued on the border when it is a well-known fact that around 15,000 to 20,000 people penetrate into Pakistan’s tribal areas and nobody knows where they go,” the PTI chairman said. “We need to fix border control, even if we have to give more visas. We need to stop this unregulated movement,” he added. The PTI chairman also talked about security measures the KP government has been considering once schools in the province reopen. “IG KP police is working on introducing a system to alert security forces of any terrorist activity by simply dialing a number,” he said. “We are hoping to launch it before the reopening of schools in the province.” Imran reiterated that the KP government’s demand of terrorism-combating equipment was not new and that the province had requested for it in July 2013 as well.
Pakistan plans to execute around 500 militants in coming weeks, officials said Monday, after the government lifted a moratorium on the death penalty in terror cases following a Taleban school massacre. Six militants have been hanged since Friday amid rising public anger over Tuesday’s slaughter in the northwestern city of Peshawar, which left 149 people dead including 133 children. After the deadliest terror attack in Pakistani history, Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif ended the six-year moratorium on the death penalty, reinstating it for terrorism-related cases. “Interior ministry has finalized the cases of 500 convicts who have exhausted all the appeals, their mercy petitions have been turned down by the president and their executions will take place in coming weeks,” a senior government official told AFP on condition of anonymity. A second official confirmed the information. Of the six hanged so

In Karachi, the Sindh High Court suspended the death warrants of two terror convicts just a day before they were due to go to the gallows. “The Sindh High Court suspended the death warrants of two terrorists today,” additional advocate general Mustafa Mehsar told AFP. Defense attorney Abdul Razaq confirmed the news. “We had filed a petition in the Sindh High Court and the second review petition is pending in the superior courts and till the decision of the petition, the death penalty could not be implemented,” Razaq told AFP. Both the accused were sentenced to death in July 2004 for killing a doctor in Karachi in July 2001.
4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kurdish fighters move North Korea threatens on ISIL’s Mosul hub strikes on U.S. amid Sony hacking claims Rabiul Awal 3, 1436H December 26, 2014
Kurdish forces in Iraq have taken more ground from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group and are moving closer to the northern city of Mosul. The Peshmerga, a term used by Kurds to refer to Kurdish fighters, delivered aid to Yazidi refugees on Mount Sinjar on Saturday and expanded a major offensive against ISIL in northwestern Iraq after breaking a months-old siege. The Peshmerga closed in on Sinjar town south of the mountain and Tal Afar to its east, AFP news agency reported on Sunday. If successful, the move would significantly alter the map of ISIL’s self-declared crossborder “caliphate” and isolate its Mosul hub. It comes as ISIL reportedly regained control of Beiji city, north of Baghdad. The battle for Beiji and its oil refinery has been running back and forth for months, with each side making gains and losses in the fighting. Troops on Sunday retreated to nearby towns surrounding Beiji. ISIL is still in control of the oil refinery, which is about 15 kilometres north of the city. The autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region’s Peshmerga reached the flanks of Mount Sinjar with food and other aid three days after launching a vast operation in the region, backed by US-led coalition air strikes. As the convoy worked its way up the mountain, a 60-kilometre-long ridge where civilians and fighters had been trapped since September, people swarmed
vehicles to receive food. Tens of thousands of members of the Yazidi religious minority were trapped on the mountain for days in the searing August heat in a first siege that sparked fears of genocide and was one of the reasons that led US President Barack Obama to launch an air campaign against ISIL. Many were eventually evacuated when a coalition of Kurdish forces opened a corridor to Syria, and on Saturday the same factions were trying to reopen that route. A statement from the Kurdish president’s son, who also heads the Kurdish Regional Security Council (KRSC), said the Peshmerga had cleared villages on the northern side of the mountain. The Syrian Kurdish YPG group, which has been leading the battle against ISIL in the town of Kobane on the SyrianTurkish border, was moving south to join up with the Peshmerga. In addition to opening a safe corridor between Sinjar and the Kurdish areas of Syria, the YPG said on Sunday it had captured seven villages from ISIL on the Syrian-Iraq border - three on the Syrian side and four on the Iraqi side. The leaders of autonomous Kurdistan described the operation they have spearheaded since Wednesday as the most successful so far against ISIL. After the US-led coalition paved the way with some 50 air strikes, around 8,000 Peshmerga reclaimed some 700 square kilometres. Source: Al-Jazeera
U.S. President Barack Obama is “recklessly” spreading rumours of a Pyongyang-orchestrated cyberattack of Sony Pictures, North Korea says, as it warns of strikes against the White House, Pentagon and “the whole U.S. mainland, that cesspool of terrorism.” Such rhetoric is routine from North Korea’s massive propaganda machine during times of high tension with Washington. But a long statement from the powerful National Defence Commission late Sunday also underscores Pyongyang’s sensitivity at a movie whose plot focuses on the assassination of its leader Kim Jong-un, who is the beneficiary of a decades-long cult of personality built around his family dynasty. The U.S. blames North Korea for the cyberattack that escalated to threats of terror attacks against U.S. movie theatres and caused Sony to cancel The Interview’s release. Obama, who promised to respond “proportionately” to the attack, told CNN’s
State of the Union in an interview broadcast Sunday that Washington is reviewing whether to put North Korea back on its list of state sponsors of terrorism. The National Defence Commission, led by Kim, warned that its 1.2 million-member army is ready to use all types of warfare against the U.S. “Our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the White House, the Pentagon and the whole U.S. mainland, the cesspool of terrorism, by far surpassing the ‘symmetric counteraction’ declared by Obama,” said the commission’s Policy Department in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. North Korea has said it knows how to prove it had nothing to do with the hacking and proposed a joint investigation with the U.S. North Korea and the U.S., which fought each other in the 1950-53 Korean War, remain technically in a state of war because the conflict ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The U.S. stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea to deter aggression from North Korea. The rivals are locked in an international standoff over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses. In the spring of last year, tension dramatically rose after North Korea issued a string of fiery threats to launch nuclear strikes against Washington and Seoul. Source: CBC News
The gunman who fatally ambushed two police officers in their squad car had a long criminal record, a hatred for police and the government, and an apparent history of mental instability that included an attempt to hang himself a year ago, authorities said Sunday. Moments before opening fire, Ismaaiyl Brinsley approached people on the street in Brooklyn and asked them to follow him on Instagram, then told them, “Watch what I’m going to do,” Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said. A portrait of the Brooklyn-born gunman emerged as big-city police departments and union leaders around the U.S. warned officers to change their routines and insist on extra backup a day after Brinsley carried out what he portrayed online as retaliation for the slayings of black men at the hands of white police officers. Brinsley was black; the slain officers were Asian and Hispanic. The slayings come at a tense time. Police nationwide
have been criticized for months for their tactics, following Eric Garner’s death in a New York officer’s chokehold and Michael Brown’s fatal shooting in Ferguson, Mo. Protests erupted in recent weeks after grand juries declined to charge the white officers involved. Investigators were trying to determine if Brinsley had taken part in any protests over the deaths of Brown and Garner, whose names he invoked in his online threat, or simply latched on to the cause for the final act in a violent rampage. They said he travelled frequently between the South and New York, where he fathered a child in Brooklyn, and had been in the city earlier in the week. Brinsley, 28, had at least 19 arrests in Georgia and Ohio, spent two years in prison for gun possession and had a troubled childhood so violent that his mother was afraid of him, police said. He ranted online about police and the government and expressed “selfdespair and anger at himself and where his life was,” Boyce said. Boyce said Brinsley’s mother believed he had undiagnosed mental problems and may have been on medication at some point, but detectives were still try-
ing to determine if he had a mental illness. On Saturday afternoon, Brinsley approached a squad car from behind in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood and fired four shots, killing Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. He then ran into a subway station and committed suicide. Hours earlier, Brinsley had shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend at her home outside Baltimore, then made threatening posts online, including a vow to put “wings on pigs” and references to the Brown and Garner cases. Baltimorearea police warned the New York department that Brinsley was in the city and bent on violence. But New York police were still getting the word out when Brinsley struck. The slayings dramatically escalated tensions that have simmered for months over police killings of blacks. The siege mentality was evident in several memos circulating among the rank and file at the 35,000-officer New York Police Department, the largest in the U.S. A union-generated message warned police officers that they should respond to every radio call with two cars — “no matter what the opinion of the patrol supervisor” — and not make arrests “unless absolutely necessary.” The president of the detectives union told members in a letter to work in threes when out on the street, wear bulletproof vests and keep aware of their surroundings. “Cowards such as yesterday’s killer strike when you are distracted and vulnerable,” the letter read. Another directive warned officers in Newark, N.J., not to patrol alone and to avoid people looking for confrontations. At the same
time, a memo from an NYPD chief asked officers to avoid fanning rage by limiting comments “via all venues, including social media, to expressions of sorrow and condolence.” New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio attended Sunday Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where Cardinal Timothy Dolan called for calm. Bratton later visited the families of both officers and laid flowers at a makeshift memorial at the site of the slayings. “It’s a reflection that the community cares about the cops,” said Bratton. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams also visited the memorial, calling on protest organizers to “hold off on any type of protest until these officers are laid to rest in a peaceful manner.” Ramos’ family also appealed for peace in the days ahead. Cousin Ronnie Gonzalez said the family has already forgiven the gunman. “He’s in the hands of God now,” he said. “We don’t believe in vengeance; we just forgive.” At an appearance with the Rev. Al Sharpton, a prominent civil rights activist, Garner’s mother expressed her dismay over the killings of the officers. “I’m standing here in sorrow about losing those two police officers. That was definitely not our agenda,” Gwen Garner said. “We are going in peace, and anyone who’s standing with us, we want you to not use Eric Garner’s name for violence because we are not about that,” she added. “These two police officers lost their lives senselessly and our condolence to the family and we stand with the families.” Source: CTV News

F A I T H Volume 1, Book 3, Number 85: Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, “(Religious) knowledge will be taken away (by the death of religious scholars) ignorance (in religion) and afflictions will appear; and Harj will increase.” It was asked, “What is Harj, O Allah’s Apostle?” He replied by beckoning with his hand indicating “killing.” (Fateh-al-Bari Page 192, Vol. 1)
Prophet Jesus(A.S) In Islam By: Sadullah Khan “Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter, he is of those nearest to Allah”; [Qur’an 3:45] Belief in Prophets (May Allah’s Peace be upon all of them) Islam emphasizes the universality of the institution of prophethood. According to the Qur’an, there is not a single nation in the world to which a prophet has not appeared sometime in history: “There is not a people but a warner has gone among them” [Q35:24]. And again: “For every nation there is a messenger” [Q10:47] The Qur’an mentions about 25 of the Biblical Prophets by name [Q4:163] and we are further told that there have been prophets besides those mentioned in the Qur’an: “And We sent messengers We have mentioned to thee before, and messengers We have not mentioned to thee” [Q4:164] . It is an Islamic article of Faith to believe .in all Prophets; from Adam through Abraham, Moses, Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them) [Q2:184] all Prophets were models of excellence who were commissioned to guide humankind [Q2:213]the mission of Prophets was to establish justice for all [Q57:25] that Prophets were the embodiments of Righteousness; “And Zachariah, John, Jesus and Elijah; all of these were of the most Righteous.” [Q6:85] It is an accepted fact in Islam that the struggle and legacy of the prophets (peace be upon them) serve as universal guides, excellent examples and as sources of hope and inspiration. Status of Maryam/Mary Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a prominent figure in Islam and the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an. The Qur’an upholds Mary as one of the four perfect examples of womanhood [Q66:12] . Mary is mentioned more times and more biographical information about her is contained in the Qur’an than in the entire New Testament. The birth of Jesus Christ is described in twice in the Qur’an - chapter 3 and chapter 19. Reading from the beginning of his birth, we come across the story of Mary, and the esteemed position which she occupies in the House of Islam, before the actual annunciation of the birth of Jesus is made.
The Qur’anic account of Mary includes the pregnancy of her mother, Mary’s birth and the annunciations of the coming birth of Jesus: “Remember how she preserved her chastity, into whom We breathed a life from Us, and made her and her son a token for humankind” [Q21:91]. The Qur’an teaches that Mary is to be revered because she completely submitted herself to God’s will, even though it meant that her own family would accuse her of unchastity when it was discovered that she was pregnant [Q19:16-21] . The mother of Jesus (peace be upon them) is accorded highest respect and considered as among the most noble in the estimation of Allah. [Q3:33] Behold! the angels said: O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you, chosen you above the women of all nations.” [Q3:42] The entire chapter 19 titled Maryam/Mary in the Qur’an and another (chapter 3) is titled Al’Imran after the family of Mary. Jesus /’Isa referred to 9 times in the Qur’an as ‘Isa and 16 times as ‘Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary) Mary is considered chaste, virtuous, receiver of God’s spirit, a testimony to the veracity of God’s message and piously obedient [Q66:11] Uniqueness of Jesus (pbuh) Virgin birth -The Qur’an gives an account of the birth of Jesus in chapter 3. Mary is described as being a virgin, chosen by God, and considered with great honor. “Behold! the angels said: O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary.” [Q3:45] . Verse 47 relates the response of and to Mary, “She said: O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me? He said: ‘Even so: Allah creates what He wills: When He has decreed a plan, He merely says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is!” The Qur’an thus affirms and Muslims believe that Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. The birth is seen as a sign (ayah) of Allah’s power and as a miraculous event. And Muslims have a high regard also for Mary. However, the Qur’an presents Jesus as the son of Mary and not as the Son of God, a significant point particularly emphasized. Like Adam (pbuh) -Though the unique birth of Jesus with one parent is no indication of divinity just as Adam’s creation was without any parentage [Q3:59] . Messiah -It is obvious that Jesus holds an exalted place within Islam. Some of the honorable epithets of Jesus (pbuh) mentioned in the Qur’an are ... prophet / nabi, messenger of God / rasul, of the Righteous / min-as-salihin, word of Allah / kalimatu-Llah), spirit from God / ruhun mina’ Llah, positive sign/symbol for humanity / aayatun lin- naas,

mercy from God / rahmatan minna, the son of Mary / ibne Maryam, eminent in this world and the next / wajihan fid-dunya wal-aakhirah, and most unique of all... the Messiah / masih. Miracles -The Qur’an speaks of Jesus possessing intellect and eloquence in childhood [Q19:30] and documents some of Jesus’ miracles, including curing the sick, restoring the sight of the blind and reviving the dead, with God’s permission [Q5:110] . The Qur’an specifically mentions two miracles which the Bible does not contain; 1. The Qur’an records Jesus as an infant verbally defending Mary’s innocence [Q19:2735]. In Surah 19:27-34, Jesus speaks from the cradle to state his mission. Jesus said, “I am indeed a servant of Allah Who has given me revelation and made me a prophet.” 2. The Qur’an [Q5:110] also reports that Jesus formed a bird out of clay, and blew into it, and it came to life and flew away. This last miracle is not recorded in the canonical New Testament but does appear in the noncanonical Gospel of Thomas. It must be remembered that all miracles / mu’jizah performed by prophets (pbuh) are done through the agency of the prophets but by the power and authority of God. Jesus’ miracles too are considered basically in the line of his being a prophet and in God’s enabling and permitting him to do so. The Qur’an thus stresses the fact that the miracles of Jesus were performed by the permission and power of God [Q5:110] .No Easter Commemoration Millions of Christians commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus (pbuh), and this begs the question that if Jesus is important to Muslims, why do Muslims then not commemorate Easter. Though Muslims accept Jesus (pbuh) as a great prophet, revere his exemplary mother Mary, and believe that Jesus is the Messiah; Muslims do not accept the major concepts that are central to the commemoration of the Easter weekend. Among these concepts are... Divine Incarnation and Trinity [Q4:171] [Q112:1-4] -Allah is ONE in an absolute sense, no one shares in His Lordship nor in His divinity; nothing is equal or comparable to God. This is in keeping with the command, “and Jesus answered him, the first of all the commandment is, Hear, O Israel; The LORD our God is One LORD.” [Mark 12:29]. In promoting a great human such as Jesus (pbuh) to divinity, does not elevate Jesus as much as it minimizes the concept of the divine; is not making the finite infinite as much as making the perfect imperfect; not an elevation of Jesus, but rather a devaluation of the Divine.
Crucifixion -Christ, according to Muslim belief, did NOT die on a cross [Q4:157] but was rather elevated by Allah and saved from being killed [Q4:158]. Resurrection -Not having died, Jesus could NOT have been resurrected [Q4:156]. Inherited Sinfulness [Q2:285] -Babies are born pure and no one is born bearing the sin of any one and no one bears the burden of another [Q17:15] . Redemption / Atonement -Muslims do not believe in the doctrine of OriginalSin, so there is no theological need for the all-atoning sacrifice of Jesus through his crucifixion and resurrection. Muslims further believe that each person will be held accountable before God for his/her own actions and thus responsible for their own salvation. Therefore, we will not be able to rely upon anyone else, not even Jesus or Muhammad, to save us from our sins. Sins are those acts we deliberately incur by our choice of actions, we are responsible and hence personally accountable. In Islam there is no notion of redemption for one’s sin by another. Each one is accountable for himself/ herself [Q99:7-8] and for each person according to his/her personal striving [Q2:286] . Jesus is ... Jesus denied by some as a fictional character, accused of being an illegitimate child by some, misconceived as divine by many; considered as a Prophet and Messiah in Islam. People do have differing perspectives on Jesus’ life and teachings, but his spiritual legacy, as a righteous and principled guide, his mission as a Prince of Peace offers an alternative opportunity for people of faith to recognize their shared religious heritage. Allah bears testimony to the truthfulness of Jesus; his mission, character, status and his very being. “Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: a statement of truth, about which people dispute.” [Q19:34]. All sincere ones would do well to reflect on the verse in the Quran reaffirming Islam’s eternal message of spiritual unity: “Say: ‘We believe in God and the revelation given to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and message given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to all Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.” [Q2:136]

6 N A T & I N T N E W S In wake of attacks, Canada Canadian shot by U.S. border guards at offers condolences to famiAmbassador Bridge lies in Australia, Pakistan Rabiul Awal 3, 1436H December 26, 2014
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper is offering his condolences to the families of the victims and others impacted by the deadly attacks in Australia and Pakistan. Harper says it’s hard enough to understand the motives that underlie a terrorist attack – but even more so when the targets of such an attack are innocent children. At least 141 people, most of them children, were killed today at a school in the city of Peshawar, near the border with Afghanistan, after it was targeted by a group of Taliban militants wearing explosive vests. Most of the victims of the siege were students ranging from Grade 1 through Grade 10. Another 121 students and three staff members were injured. Seven attackers, all wearing explosives vests, died in the assault. The prime minister says it’s especially heartbreaking to see such tragedy through the eyes of a father. Harper also acknowledged the attack Monday in Australia, where three people – including the lone gunman, a self-styled cleric with jihadist sympathies – died after a 16hour hostage-taking at a cafe in Sydney. “We work around the world with our allies and our friends in the international community to identify terrorist threats, to respond to them, to prevent them,” he said. “We will continue to be in contact with authorities in these various countries that have
been recently affected to see what they have learned from their recent experiences and how we can use that to do more to prevent these kinds of instances here.” Harper appeared emotional when he described the circumstances of the attack in Pakistan. “It’s hard for any of us, as rational and compassionate people, to understand terrorism – to understand why people would want, in the name of some political cause, to simply terrorize, hurt kill innocent people, whole sections of society,” he said. “But I think it is beyond our comprehension why somebody would target children. As a father, your heart just breaks when you see that kind of thing.” Earlier today, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird also offered his condemnation of the attack, which took place at a military-run school. In a statement, he called the act cowardly, saying there’s nothing more sinister than killing children at school. He noted that the Taliban tried and failed to kill recent Nobel Peace price winner Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by gunmen two years ago while on her way home from school in Pakistan. “Canada unequivocally condemns this heinous act,” Baird’s statement said. “There is no more cowardly act than attacking innocent children, and nothing more sinister than brutally murdering them while at school.” He urged the people of Pakistan to seek solace and inspiration from Malala’s example. “In the moments that follow such harrowing tragedy, we hope that the resolve and the dignity of innocent Pakistani people will see more children like Malala Yousafzai emerge to carry the torch forward for more education, free from violence or intimidation. Canada will stand by them, and support them, in the face of this ongoing terrorist threat.” Source: The Canadian Press,
In New York, rising tensions and calls for unity after two police officers are killed
Police-community relations, already strained by nationwide protests over the deaths in recent months of unarmed black people at the hands of white officers, grew even more fragile Sunday in the wake of the assassination-style slayings of two New York City patrolmen. A day after officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were fatally shot in their patrol car, recriminations flew in the country’s largest city, with Mayor Bill de Blasio standing at the epicenter. Critics blamed the mayor and
his aggressive campaign to reform police practices for the shootings, with officers taking the extraordinary step of silently turning their backs on de Blasio as he entered the hospital where the two patrolmen died. Relations between the mayor and officers have become so strained, former New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly said in an interview, that de Blasio “probably needs an intermediary to go between himself and the [police] unions, maybe a religious leader.” Source:.washingtonpost.com
Man accused of pointing replica The man, whose name has not been released, was treated and released from hoshandgun at border guards: A Canadian man shot by U.S. border guards at the Ambassador Bridge crossing between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit was carrying a “replica of a handgun,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement released late Sunday. The agency had said earlier Sunday that the man stopped his car before the U.S. inspection booth at around 3 a.m. and started walking towards border officers while “waving a handgun.” The officers ordered him to drop the weapon, the agency said, but the man instead pointed the gun in the officers’ direction, prompting them to open fire. In an updated statement released at 10 p.m. ET, CBP said it had reviewed video of the incident and interviewed five witnesses. Two border officers fired their weapons — one once and the other three times. One of the rounds hit the man in the arm. “Investigators determined that the individual was holding a replica of a handgun,” the statement said. The man has had “previous encounters” with Canadian law enforcement.
pital before being taken into custody, the agency said. The bridge re-opened after the scene was analyzed. ‘Why haven’t you shot me yet?’ Shortly before the incident at the border, Windsor police say they were called to a McDonald’s parking lot at 2:40 a.m. ET to reports of a man with a gun. According to a news release, the man got out of his vehicle when officers arrived and had a gun in his hand. The man allegedly approached the restaurant, at which time police ordered him to drop his weapon. Police say the man pointed the gun in the direction of the officers and asked, “Why haven’t you shot me yet?” Attempts were being made to de-escalate the situation, police said, but the man got into his vehicle and fled onto the EC Row Expressway. “Police later learned that the suspect was involved in an incident in the United States with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers,” according to the news release. into the administration building 20 metres (yards) from the auditorium, had ran and locked herself into the bathroom but the attackers threw a grenade inside, through a vent, and killed her. Bajwa said. Some of the funerals were held overnight, but most of the 132 children and 10 school staff members killed in the attack were to be buried Wednesday. Another 121 students and three staff members were wounded. “They finished in minutes what I had lived my whole life for, my son,” said labourer Akhtar Hussain, tears streaming down his face as he buried his 14-year-old, Fahad. He said he had worked for years in Dubai to earn a livelihood for his children. “That innocent one is now gone in the grave, and I can’t wait to join him, I can’t live anymore,” he wailed, banging his fists against his head. Prayer vigils were held across the nation and in other schools, students spoke of their shock at the brutal slaying in Peshawar, where seven Taliban gunmen, explosives strapped to their bodies, scaled a back wall using a ladder to get into the in the morning hours on Tuesday.
Students were gunned down and some of the female teachers were burned alive. Army commandos fought the Taliban in a day-long battle until the school was cleared and the attackers dead. After the attackers entered the school, they made their way into the main auditorium where many students had gathered for an event, military spokesman Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa told reporters during the tour. The militants then made their way to the hall’s stage and started shooting at random. As students tried to flee for the doors, they were gunned down. The military later recovered about 100 bodies from the auditorium alone, according to the spokesman. “This is not a human act,” Bajwa said. “This is a national tragedy.” The government declared a three-day mourning period, starting Wednesday. Overnight, the body of the school principal, Tahira Qazi, was found among the debris from the rampage. Her death raised further the earlier reported death toll of 141.

Elimination of Terrorism, a Huge Challenge
How can Taliban lib ((students) d ) perceive themselves as Muslims without even knowing how to practise the Quran and Ahadith? In other words, they live and die without proper Islamic knowledge or with little knowledge. In either case, they can’t practise Islam. Hence, they tend to end up as totally confused/the most vulnerable species on the Earth. Because of their naivety, they are up for grab by the anti Islam/anti Pakistan forces (internal or external) for ulterior motives. Secondly, there are those who have nothing to do with Islam except defaming it; they cunningly manage to fake as practical Muslims. It’s evident the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) actually is one of the most dangerous – fully trained for guerilla warfare and armed to teeth “anti-Pakistan groups,” its members chose Dec 16 for a reason: They gave a painful message reminding the nation of crippling Pakistan when it lost its eastern wing in 1971. They carried out the Tuesday bloodshed, the most inhuman heinous crime against the innocent children of an army Public school on Warsak rd Peshawar. According to sources, the TTP spokesperson vowed more such militant attacks and told Pakistani civilians to detach themselves from all military institution, adding: “We are still able to carry out major attacks. This was just the trailer.” Horrible! Obviously, the ferocious animals are planning more attacks at schools in Pakistan. Apparently, they are taking revenge for the Pak military operation zarb e azb which they claim has killed their innocent children. One survivor told how children belonging to army
bbackgrounds k d were picked i k d out and d gunned down. Nevertheless, by killing school children, the TTP has crossed all limits of barbarism. Despite having been reminded many a times, the government has not been able to re-evaluate its counterterrorism strategy, to take the right steps and initiate the right policy so that we do not witness this kind of atrocity. Good Show: Pakistani nation has a fragile unity to deal with the national issue. Subsequent to the all parties conference APC headed by the prime minister and attended by Imran Khan among others in Peshawar and all participants had a single voice to defeat the terrorists. In other words, the sacrifice of 132 martyred kids and 9 martyred school staff has enabled the fragile nation to narrow the gaps if any. They have almost unanimously voiced for uniting to fight off the menace of terrorism. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf called off its 126 days long “Sit In” in D chowk Islamabad without any logical ending with regard to Naya Pakistan or the formation of Judicial commission to probe the election rigging in four constituencies. Disappointment: Last year, the Nawaz regime drew up the National Security Policy (NSP) and showed its seriousness in countering the growing terror threat in the country. Strengthening of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) to coordinate and assemble all efforts to fight the terror threat was talked about loudly yet one can’t see any progress on the issue beyond lip service. The politically embattled federal government has failed to realise that the military operation can’t
bbe totally ll successful f l unless l there h is other counter terrorism strategy well in place. That is why, the ferocious militants were more than encouraged to commit a preventable carnage on December 16. Normally, we can’t blame on security lapse, yet a counter strategy would have saved many innocent lives from being lost. The truth is there is a trust deficit which is why a negotiated settlement is out of questions. So far, no talks with Taliban did ever bring any peace as they are not trust worthy. The terrorists have no religion, no conscience and no remorse; they are transformed into monsters that are paid and hired by the vested interests to damage our national interests. In this game, they kill if they have to. They please their masters. Terrorist Attack at Karachi International Airport, attacking at the Wagah border and now killing so many children is part of enemy’s strategy. The terrorists burnt and shot the kids to death; toddlers and nine members of teaching staff at the Peshawar Army School were not spared either. This clearly indicates what type of people in the name of Islam they are. Although, the Pak military is heavily engaged in Operation Zarb-eAzb, yet the fact is it can’t continue fighting successfully engaging the conventional methodology. Historically, such operations have failed to totally eliminate terrorists and provide security to the common Pakistani citizen. Fresh strategy to fight against the menace is an absolute necessity. Unpredictability: The TTP militants have the capacity to emerge at will anywhere in the country to carry out their brutality on innocent civilians. Many citizens, including

We Condem Mass Killing of Stuudents in Pakistan By:Sikandar Hayat This week, 132 students and 9 teachers were killed in Pakistan. My family and I are with our Pakistani brothers and sisters and share this time of sorrow with a heavy heart. May God forgive the victims and grant them a high status in paradise. Amin! We, all Pakistanis, stand united in the fight against terrorism. No terrorist will find a safe place in Pakistan, inshallah. A terrorist cannot be a Muslim. Muslims, especially Pakistanis, are the victims of terrorism. Pakistanis are the ones who suffered the most loss in the war on terrorism. Since 2001, more than 35000 civilians and over 5000 soldiers have been killed in this war on terror in Pakistan. May God protect Pakistan and all other peace loving people across the globe. Amin!
By Randeep Singh Sarai Former Federal Liberal Candidate for Surrey Newton. I wanted to share a few of my thoughts, much of it learned through observation during the last month. First of all, I want to thank every last Muslim brother and sister I met during the Surrey Newton Liberal nomination battle. Islam is a beautiful religion. Its beauty lies in that the religion, when followed correctly, encompasses the entire human way of life.Nothing pertaining to this world is left to imagination when following Islam. Your participation in mainstream politics is a must. Your time as a community is now. I witnessed so much energy from my Muslim brothers and sisters during the campaign; especially the ones I engaged with on my campaign. While the results may not have been in my favor, I can truly savor in the fact that I was very proactive in recruiting and engaging the Muslim community. It brought me so much joy seeing Muslim brothers, sisters and youngsters walking by to cast their vote on the nomination day. This is true participation. While I fell short in reaching my goal to become the next Liberal Candidate in Newton; the objec-

tive still remains the same – saving Canada’s strong Liberal traditions from the grips of Prime Minister Harper and his Tories. Like Sikhs, Muslims discovered Canada to a large extent under the Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. In-shaa-Allah, Muslims can further define their existence in Canada in a positive light, under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Your community has inspired me during the campaign. Your ideas, suggestions and feedback helped inform my ideas for Newton. Your participation makes Canada stronger. Thank you once again. I look forward to opportunities to work with my Muslim brothers and sisters to make Newton, Surrey and Canada a better place to work, play and live.
In less than one year from now, Federal elections will be held. non-school h l going i children, hild hhave died peacefully to serve their socalled national interests. Moreover, Pakistan has lost more than 50,000 people already, and more than 5000 military/security personnel have lost their lives while fighting the terrorists (enemy commandos). There are no two ways about it; the nation is paying the cost in the blood d of its innocent people and now its children (students). The Pakistanis finally realize that the ongoing warr on terror is Pakistan’s war. Finally, the Justice system is allowed to work against the terrorists. Once the mercy petitions are rejected, death warrants are issued and d the convicted terrorists are hanged d till their last breath. Recommendations: Since providing the 24/7 fool prooff security everywhere is almost impossible, the people are morally obligated to be watching for any suspicious activity near them, Furthermore, the needed “Intelligence gathering’ is of utmost importance, so is sealing the borders to discourage the free inflow and d outflow of militants. Also, a counter-terrorism strategy needs to be in place to disrupt the enemy supply line right at the original source. Beyond doubt, the Pak military knows its job very well as to how, when and where to carry out a pre emptive strike aimed at repulsing the terror attackers right at theirr door step. Importantly, the government, the military, the police and the civil society must stay on one page to gett rid of the ongoing menace to save the country, now or never. That man can have nothing but what he strives for.
to what they promised us before they were elected. This will then shed light on whom we should elect or re-elect, and whom we should kick out because they failed to deliver. In the absence of any OBJECTIVE way of judging our elected officials, we can only guess and elect on ethnic lines, at best.
Candlelight Vigils for Victims By: Ijaz A. Chatha Dear Muhtram Mufti sahib In recent years, I have seen an increase of Muslims participation in attending candlelight vigils for victims of various natural disasters or other tragedies. This seems to fall under the category of imitating the kuffar. If this is not permissible in Islam, then Muslims should be addressed. I believe that the participation in such events is a big sin. Could you please help me to understand this candle light vigil?

F A I T H
The Month of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) birth BY NOURAH ABDUL AZIZ AL-KHEREIJI SINCE the first day of the month of Rabiul Awwal — the third month of the Hijrah calendar — in which the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, falls, I have felt a joy filling my heart, lighting up vision and enveloping the universe. We exchange greetings to celebrate the month chosen by Most Merciful God for the birth of Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, the light of mankind, master of the pious, guide to the right path and the springtime of our hearts. All our noble sentiments are attached to this honored month which is first among all months. Every year we welcome the month like lovers who have been waiting the whole year for a reunion. The month brings us to the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet, pbuh, the model for mankind and the seal of the messengers. We always say that though the study of his life and works are required at all times, they are particularly significant on his birth anniversary. While all countries celebrate their national days every year, the month and day on which the leader of mankind and best of God’s creations was born is entitled to be commemorated in a fitting manner. It should be done by mutually reminding ourselves of his deeds and being familiar with his qualities so that our love for him becomes deep-seated in our hearts. We should renew our allegiance to him, discuss his teachings and make sure that we follow in his footsteps. In the words of the Holy Qur’an, “All that We relate to you of the stories of the apostles — with it We make firm your heart, in them there comes to you the truth, as well as an exhortation and a message of remembrance to those who
believe.” (Chapter: Hud, Verse: 120). By following the Holy Prophet, pbuh, we will achieve God’s love and mercy. God says in His Book: “(Muhammad) says: If you love God follow me, God will love you and forgive your sins, because God is Oftforgiving and Most Merciful.” (Chapter: Al Imran, Verse: 31). Following the footsteps of the Holy Prophet,
pbuh, and implicit obedience to him carries us to a point of perfection in which our love for him exceeds our love of self or our love of anyone else. He said: “None of you believe until you love me more than your wealth, your sons, yourself or any other people or things.” Then only will we be able to love for the sake of God, hate for the sake of God and sacrifice to win the love of God. Every virtuous deed we do is with the hope of getting reward from God. By performing acts that bring us closer to God, we reach a
stage where we can be in the company of the Prophet, pbuh, in Paradise and view God’s face which is the ultimate bliss. And that is the goal we yearn for. Of the Prophet, the best of all mankind, God described in the Holy Qur’an: “You have an exalted standard of character.” (Chapter: Pen, Verse: 4). It is also stated in the Holy Qur’an that he is the Messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets: “Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Apostle of God, and the Seal of the Prophets. And God has full knowledge of all things.” (Chapter: Confederates, Verse: 40). “You are the first one on whom Almighty God and angels began sending His blessings and ordered the Muslims to do so. God and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O ye that believe send your blessings on him and salute him with all respect.” (Chapter: Confederates, Verse: 56). The recital of the prayers to send blessings on the Prophet, pbuh, is an act of boundless reward. Most Merciful God has been gracious enough to lead us out of darkness into light. This has been referred to in the Holy Qur’an: “He it is Who sends blessings on you, as do His angels, that He may bring you from the depths of darkness into Light, and He is full of mercy to the believers.” (Chapter: Confederates, Verse: 43).
O God, send your blessings and salutations to our master, Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those who will follow him until the Day of Judgment. Though there is disagreement on the date on which the Prophet, pbuh, was born, there is no dispute over the fact that he was born on Monday. Therefore, Monday has a special significance. We Muslims must thank Merciful God for guiding us to the true religion and including us in the community of Muhammad, pbuh. It is our duty to translate our thanks to God in virtuous deeds, and express our joy over God’s special mercy in sending the Prophet, pbuh, to us. Almighty God said in the Holy Qur’an “We sent you not but as a mercy for all creatures.” (Chapter: The Prophets, Verse: 107). Though we should always practice virtuous deeds to enable us to achieve closeness to God, it is most important to do so on special occasions. Does mankind know a more appropriate day than the day of his birth? On this day we should practice more of his Sunnah such as fasting, caring for our kin, feeding the poor, making our spouses and children happy, organizing gatherings to discuss his life and exemplary qualities, seeking forgiveness from those we have wronged and, above all, increase glorification of God. O Allah, send blessings and salutations upon our master, Muhammad, and his family and reward us in both this life and the life after death. O God, send blessings and salutations upon our lord, Muhammad, and illuminate our hearts and ennoble our minds both in this life and in the life after death.

The decisive victory gives the party an outright majority in parliament. Narendra Modi is set to become prime minister. The Congress party, headed by the Gandhi family, has prevailed over Indian politics since the country gained independence in 1947. Justin Trudeau Visits Darul Qur’an Institute Surrey
On December, 17, The Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies hosted an evening with Honourable Member of Parliament and Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada Mr Justin Trudeau. Along with Mr. Trudeau there were other dignitaries such as Former Member of Parliament Mr Sukh Dhaliwal and local representative of the Liberal Party, Mr Bilal Cheema. More than 250 members of the Muslim community came out to see and hear Mr Trudeau. The founders of Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies, Shaykh Oves and Shaykh Anees gave an introduction about the Institute, elaborated
on the Institute’s activities and spoke about the peaceful, Islamic values that the staff of Darul Quran Institute teaches its students. Mr Trudeau was very happy to meet the students, take pictures with them and spoke to the audience about how Islamic and Canadian values are about peace and how we should make Canada the best nation in the world by respecting one another and by being the best citizens we can be of this beautiful nation. At the end Shaykh Oves thanked the dignitaries for sparing their valuable time and thanked the guests for attending, afterwards refreshments were served to all.

Dhaliwal, who acted with quiet dignity as compared to Sarai’s pushy methods that put off decent people, garnered 4,562 votes, while Sarai with all the backing of people like Prem Vinning and Dr. Gulzar Cheema managed just 2,221 votes – thus totally exposing the

Who are Taliban?
Definition: The Taliban are an Islamic movement following a strict interpretation of Sharia that took over Afghanistan following the Soviet withdrawal. Soviet troops install a puppet regime in Kabul. The U.S., Pakistan, China, Iran, and Saudi Arabia offer support to mujahideen “freedom fighters” as they begin a guerrilla war against the Soviets. Taliban rule imposed draconian restrictions on women being allowed to work, go to school, or even leave the house -- which could only be done fully covered with a burqa and accompanied by a male relative. The Taliban granted safe haven to terrorist group al-Qaida, leading to their overthrow by a U.S.-led invasion in 2001. The Taliban have regrouped in the mountainous region straddling Pakistan and Afghanistan, and have continued to operate as an insurgent movement.
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP “Taliban Movement of Pakistan”), alternatively referred to as the Pakistani Taliban, is an umbrella organization of various Islamist militant groups based in the northwestern Federally Administered Tribal Areas along the Afghan border in Pakistan. Most, but not all, Pakistani Taliban groups coalesce under the TTP In December 2007 about 13 groups united under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud to form the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. Among the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan’s stated objectives are resistance against the
Pakistani state, enforcement of their interpretation of sharia and a plan to unite against NATO-led forces in Afghanistan. The TTP is not directly affiliated with the Afghan Taliban movement led by Mullah Omar, with both groups differing greatly in their histories, strategic goals and interests although they are both predominantly Pashtun. The Afghan Taliban, with the alleged support of Pakistani Taliban, operate against international coalition and Afghan security forces in Afghanistan. The roots of the TTP as an organization began in 2002 when the Pakistani military conducted incursions into the tribal areas to originally combat foreign (Afghan, Arab and Central Asian) militants fleeing from the war in Afghanistan into the neighbouring tribal areas of Pakistan. In December 2007 the existence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan was officially announced under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud. In August 2009, a missile strike from a suspected U.S. drone killed Baitullah Mehsud. On 25 August 2008, Pakistan banned the group, froze its bank accounts and assets, and barred it from media appearances. The government also announced that bounties would be placed on prominent leaders of the TTP. In August 2014, hardline elements of the TTP from four of the seven tribal districts formed a separate group called Tehrik-iTaliban Pakistan Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, led by the Mohmand Agency commander Omar Khalid Khorosani., after disagreeing with Fazlullah’s order to fight the Pakistani Army’s Operation Zarb-e-Azb offensive in the Tribal Areas. Some Uzbek and Arab fighters previously working with the TTP reportedly began leaving Pakistan to go to Iraq to fight alongside the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Afghan Taliban
The Afghan Taliban and the Tehrik-i-Tali-
ban Pakistan differ greatly in their history, leadership and goals although they are both predominantly Pashtun. The two groups are distinct, though linked, movements. An Afghan Taliban spokesman told The New York Times: “We don’t like to be involved with them, as we have rejected all affiliation with Pakistani Taliban fighters ... We have sympathy for them as Muslims, but beside that, there is nothing else between us.” Peshawarbased security analyst Brigadier (retd) Muhamaad Saad believes the Taliban are not a monolithic entity. “They can be divided into three broad categories: [Afghan] Kandahari Taliban, led by Mullah Omar; [Afghan] Paktia Taliban, led by Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son Sirajuddin Haqqani; and [Pakistani] Salfi Taliban [TTP],” he said. “It’s the Salfi Taliban who pose a real threat to Pakistan. They may not be obeying the Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar.”Some regional experts state that the common name “Taliban” may be more misleading than illuminating. Gilles Dorronsoro of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace believes that “the fact that they have the same name causes all kinds of confusion.” As the Pakistani Army began offensives against the Pakistani Taliban, many unfamiliar with the region mistakenly thought that the assault was against the Afghan Taliban of Mullah Omar. Although the TTP has claimed allegiance with the Afghan Taliban in the Afghan Taliban’s insurgency in Afghanistan, the two groups have no direct affiliation. The TTP has almost exclusively targeted elements of the Pakistani state. The Afghan Taliban however have historically relied on support from the Pakistani army in their campaign to control Afghanistan. Regular Pakistani army troops fought alongside the Afghan Taliban in the War in Afghanistan (1996–2001).Major leaders of the Afghan Taliban including Mullah Omar, Jalaluddin Haqqani and Siraj Haqqani are believed to enjoy safe haven in Pakistan. In 2006, Jalaluddin Haqqani was called a ‘Pakistani asset’ by a senior official of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. Pakistan regards the Haqqanis as an important
force for protecting its interests in Afghanistan and therefore has been unwilling to move against them. Before the creation of the TTP some of their leaders and fighters were among the 10,000 Pakistani, Arab and Central Asian militants fighting as part of a 25,000 force in the War in Afghanistan (1996–2001) and the War in Afghanistan (2001-present) against the antiTaliban United Islamic Front and NATO forces. A 1998 U.S. State Department report stated that “20–40 percent of regular Taliban soldiers were Pakistani.”After the fall of the Afghan Taliban in late 2001, many Pakistani Taliban militants, including members of today’s TTP, sought refuge in Pakistan. Afghan Taliban maintaining contacts to Pakistan’s ISI also fled for Pakistan where they regrouped, maintain safe havens and training camps and from where they launched their insurgency in Afghanistan. Members of the two groups easily cross back and forth across the border between the two countries. A journalist embedded with Canadian troops in Kandahar Province in the summer of 2006 indicated that “Pakistani Taliban were routinely captured” at the time. Captured fighters admitted to being recruited and trained in Pakistan.
Roots and development
The roots of the TTP as an organization began in 2002 when the Pakistani military conducted incursions into the tribal areas to originally combat foreign (Afghan, Arab and Central Asian) militants fleeing from the war in Afghanistan into the neighbouring tribal areas of Pakistan. 10 smart facts for healthier eating
Hippocrates laid the foundation for the science of nutrition more than 2,000 years ago when he said: Let food be thy medicine, writes McGill University chemistry professor Joe Schwarcz in The Smart Palate: Delicious Recipes for a Healthy Lifestyle. Schwarcz, director of the McGill Office for Science and Society, is a co-editor of the 320-page book, and it is generously seasoned with his scientific observations in the form of “Dr. Joe’s Smart Facts.” Here are 10 of Dr. Joe’s smart facts: 1. Lutein, a natural antioxidant present in the macula, the area of the retina responsible for central vision, protects against macular degeneration. Researchers learned in retrospective studies that people who ate more foods high in lutein had a lower risk than others of eye disease: This was particularly true for spinach, the most significant source of lutein in our diet. Cooked spinach is better than raw: Cooking breaks down plant cell walls, which means nutrients are released more readily. (Antioxidants are chemicals that can prevent or slow cell damage: natural antioxidants are found mainly in fruits and vegetables and the most common ones are vitamins A, C, and E, betacarotene, and lycopene.) 2. Nuts have a lot of fat, but it’s the beneficial polyunsaturated and monounsaturated variety. Eating nuts does not appear to cause weight gain and can make us feel satiated and hence less likely to overeat. A handful of walnuts contains almost twice the antioxidants, by weight, of any commonly consumed nut. 3. Chickpeas, particularly sprouted chickpeas, are a source of isoflavones, or natural estrogens. (It’s simple to sprout chickpeas: You can find lots of information online.) Current animal research suggests that isoflavones isolated from chickpea sprouts can curb bone loss, which suggests that these extracts could have potential for treating the symptoms of menopause as well as osteoporosis related to estrogen deficiency. 4. Kosher salt, like conventional salt, is composed of sodium chloride – but since
kosher salt grains are larger than those of conventional salt, a teaspoon of kosher salt is roughly equivalent to half a teaspoon of regular salt. 5. Contrary to popular belief, the anti-cancer compound sulforaphane is not found in cabbage; rather, it is formed from a precursor present in cabbage when it is chopped, chewed or cooked. Sulforaphane increases the production of enzymes that neutralize free radicals connected with aging and various diseases. Stanford University scientists discovered that sulforaphane boosts the levels of these enzymes more than any plant compound. 6. One reason oats are a smart breakfast option is their ability to keep us feeling full longer than other foods. In a study comparing oatmeal to a sugary, flaked cereal, researchers found that participants who ate oatmeal at breakfast consumed one-third fewer calories at lunch. This helped with weight management. As well, betaglucan, a form of soluble fibre found in oats, has been shown to lower blood cholesterol. 7. Sweet potatoes are high in fibre, have virtually no fat, and more beta-carotene – the body’s precursor to vitamin A – than any other food. 8. Pineapple is a good source of ferulic acid, a plant chemical that prevents the formation of cancer-causing substances. It also contains the enzyme bromelain, which has the ability to break down proteins and so can be used to tenderize chewy cuts of meat. 9. Greek yogurt is made by straining regular yogurt, removing much of the liquid whey as well as the lactose and other sugars dissolved in it. For the same number of calories, then, Greek yogurt has roughly double the protein and half the sugar of other yogurts. 10. Honey is a concentrated sugar solution with small amounts of chemicals that have antioxidant and antiseptic properties. The precise composition of honey depends on the types of flowers the bees have visited. Source: Canada.com

Importance of Self-Acceptance
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Self-acceptance plays an important role in our daily life. It doesn’t mean that you don’t want to change. Quite the contrary, it often leads to dramatic change as you give up the limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviors that you’d adopted trying to be someone you’re not. The secret to finding happiness and peace you seek in your life is not in trying to figure out what’s wrong with you but instead, your aim is to explore the truth of who you really are! Imagine your vision is getting blurry so you go to the eye doctor and get a prescription for new pair of glasses. A mistake is made in the lab and the actual lenses you receive are far too strong, the glasses not only make your vision worse, they give you headaches. You realize the problem so you go back and get the prescription that is correct for you. With these new lenses, the world appears sharper, crisper, and more beautiful. You see the world around you more clearly! Self-acceptance is like putting on that wonderful new pair of glasses with the perfect prescription for you. You see every action and thought you have in a new light
… the h way it really is rather than how you’d once imagined the world to be (the world you saw through the lenses that weren’t right for
you. Little by little, you’re able to let go of past patterns and you embrace the authentic you. You accept yourself, you love yourself, and d your world becomes rich with a sense off peace and happiness that may have alluded d you for years. Nurturing the Next Generation to Pray
By Hafsa Waseela Allah subhanahu wa taala has entrusted Muslim parents with their children and made them responsible to raise them in an Islamic manner. They are the model to their children whom are the next generation. It is important to be cautious in our actions and manners especially in front of them. Think before you speak. Think before you act. For instance, when a father backbites another individual in front of his child; no amount of advice from him to refrain from backbiting will work. It may seem a huge task to be able to be a good model for the children, but one should also know and realize that it is the only way we can really teach our children. Both Allah subhanahu wa taala and our Beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have mentioned the importance of raising and educating children. In Surah Al-Tahreem 66:6, Allah the Exalted said: “O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allaah, but do that which they are commanded” Imam al-Tabari performed a commentary on this verse and stated that when Allah subhanahu wa taala says ‘Ward off yourselves’ teach one another that which will protect those who do it from the Fire and ward it off from them, if it is done in obedience to Allaah and they do it in obedience to Allaah. The phrase “and your families against a Fire” means, and teach your families to do acts of obedience to Allaah so that they may protect themselves from the Fire. [Tafseer al-Tabari, 18/165] Our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said “All of you are heads of a group and all of you are responsible for your groups; the ruler is the head of state and he is responsible for his people, the man is head of his family and responsible for his family, the woman is the head in her husband’s house and she is responsible
for the house. In short all of you are heads and responsible for your group.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] This implies that every individual is responsible in building an Islamic society and what occurs around the Ummah today only indicates the neglect of responsibility. The importance of Prayer: Prayer is one of the five pillars upon which Islam is founded, and how can anyone build a building without foundations, and how secure is a building without its foundations? On the Day of Reckoning, each and every Muslim will first be asked about his/her prayer before any other actions. Imagine a scenario, when failing in the first exam paper, how you will be able to perform the upcoming exam papers that are even more difficult to answer. In Surah Al Baqarah, Allah subhanahu wa taala stressed the importance of prayer “Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-Baqarah 2:277) Prayer purifies our souls and is a direct communication between a servant and His Lord. No matter what the circumstances are, it cannot be waived as other pillars of Islam fasting in Ramadan, Hajj (pilgrimage) and Zakat that can be waived under certain conditions. Not only prayer is important, but also praying on time. Allah subhanahu wa taala said in Surah An-Nisa, Verse 103: ‘Indeed the prayer has been enjoined upon the Believers at stated times’ Abu Amr ash-Shaybani said: The owner of this house - and he pointed to the house of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood - said: I asked the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ‘Which action is most loved by Allah?’ He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Prayer at its proper time.” Then he said: What next? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Righteous conduct towards the parents.” Then he said: What next? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Jihad in the path of Allah.” He (Abdul-
lah) said: He informed me with them, If I asked him for more he would have told me more. This emphasises that praying on time is the most beloved action that he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) even before righteousness to parents and Jihad. This can seen by the use of ‘What next’ Importance of teaching our children how to pray: It is crucial that we teach our children how to pray, as we have a duty to ourselves and family in relation to religious commitment and goodness. Allah subhanahu wa taala said in Surah Ta-Ha: “And enjoin As-Salaat (the prayer) on your family, and be patient in offering them [i.e. the Salaat (prayers)]” [Ta-Ha 20:132] It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Teach your children to pray when they are seven years old, and smack them (lightly) if they do not do so when they are ten, and separate them in their beds.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 495; classed as saheeh (authentic) by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5868 Tips on how to teach our children how to pray When teaching and reminding children of obligatory duties such as prayer or any other good action even voluntary, it is important that the educator should be approachable and easygoing, and not foul-mouthed, beat or even threat their children. However, if the child neglects his/her duties and continue to do prohibited actions, then one needs to firm and use stern measures without causing harm. Here are several tips: 1)When young, children imitate what they see in front of them, so you can pray in front of them. This will ignite an interest in them that they would like to join the salah. 2)Teach them Quran slowly, starting with Surah Al-Fatiha. Break it down. 3) Invite your children 7+ to pray alongside the family congregation prayer (Jamaah). 4)Teach your children that they are praying
to the Provider (Al-Raziq) and that when we pray, we give thanks to Him for the blessings He has provided for us. 5)Children ask a lot of questions; so when they see you pray, they will want to question, why, when, how, who and what for. Do not ignore their questions. The more they ask, the more they learn; which will help the child develop his mental and intellectual abilities. If you don’t know an answer, it is better for you to ask or research from authentic sources and respond to them. 6) Children love bed-time stories. Instead of princess and action man stories, narrate to them stories in which they can benefit and learn lessons from them; for example parables of the Prophets (peace upon them) how they supplicated and prayed during good and testing times; the advice of Luqman (the wise one) to his son when he stressed the importance of prayer. Ultimately, Allah subhanahu wa taala has given each and every one of us good and bad tendencies to choose and decide and we will be tested, the more we are tested, the more Allah loves us as Allah subhanahu wa taala tests those He loves. The role of the parents is to encourage the good tendencies in their children so that one can help themselves and their families and follow the correct path. “And Say Do deeds! Allah will see your deeds and (so will) His Messenger and the believers. And you will be brought back to the AllKnower of the unseen and the seen. Then He will inform you of what you used to do.” [Surah At-Tawbah verse 105]. This article serves as a reminder; one can only remind, the rest is up to you to think, act and implement. We need to revive Islam within our hearts and actions. Don’t leave it too late. Source: Aaila.org

In Pakistan school attack, Taliban terrorists kill 145, mostly children
-- “’God is great,’” the Taliban militants shouted as they roared through the hallways of a school in Peshawar, Pakistan. Then, 14-year-old student Ahmed Faraz recalled, one of them took a harsher tone. “ ‘A lot of the children are under the benches,’ “ a Pakistani Taliban said, according to Ahmed. “ ‘Kill them.’ “ By the time the hours-long siege at Army Public School and Degree College ended early Tuesday evening, at least 145 people -- 132 children, 10 school staff members and three soldiers -- were dead, military spokesman Gen. Asim Bajwa said. More than 100 were injured, many with gunshot wounds, according to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani. The death toll does not include the terrorists who attacked the school, bursting into an auditorium where a large number of students were taking an exam and gunning down many of them within minutes, Bajwa said. “They started shooting indiscriminately,” Bajwa said, “and that’s where maximum damage was caused.”Pakistani Taliban spokesman Mohammed Khurrassani said the militants scaled the school’s walls around 10 a.m. (midnight ET),
intent on killing older students there. The Taliban had “300 to 400 people ... under their custody” at one point, said Khurrassani, whose group is called Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. But Bajwa said there was no hostage situation, as the attackers’ focus was shooting to kill rather than taking captives. They were eventually met by Pakistani troops who pushed through the complex building by building, room by room. By 4 p.m., they’d confined the attackers to four buildings. A few hours later, all the militants -- seven of them, according to Bajwa -- were dead. World leaders condemn Pakistan attack Pakistani authorities spent Tuesday night inside the school in Peshawar, a city about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the country’s capital, Islamabad, looking for survivors, victims and improvised explosive devices planted to worsen the carnage. As they searched, they discovered that the school’s principal was among the terrorists’ victims. The attack drew sharp condemnation from top Pakistani officials, who vowed that the country wouldn’t stop its war against the Taliban. “We are undeterred. ... We will not back off,” Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told CNN.
But he said the ambush at the school is another example of how great his nation’s sacrifices have been in fighting that’s raged for more than a decade. “Even the children are dying on the frontline in the war against terror,” he said. “The smaller the coffin, the heavier it is to carry. ... It’s a very, very tragic day.” Most of the dead were 12 to 16 years old. On a typical day, the Army Public School and Degree College is home to about 1,100 students and staff, most of them sons and daughters of army personnel from around Peshawar, though others attend as well.Their nightmare began in late morning, when a car exploded behind the school. Pakistani education minister Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman explained to CNN that the blast was a ruse, meant to divert the attention of the school’s security guards. It worked. Gunmen got over the walls and walked through where students in grades 8, 9 and 10 have classes and fired randomly, said Dr. Aamir Bilal of Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital, citing students. They came in with enough ammunition and other supplies to last for days and were not expecting to come out alive, according to a Pakistani military official. Seventh-grader Mohammad Bilal said he was
sitting outside his classroom taking a math test when the gunfire erupted. He fell into bushes before running to the school’s gates to safety. Ahmed, the 14-year-old student, remembered being in the school’s auditorium when four or five people burst in through a back door “and started rapidly firing.” After getting shot in his left shoulder, the ninth-grader lay under a bench. “My shoulder was peeking out of the bench, and somebody was following,” Ahmed recalled. “They went into another room, (and when) I ran to the exit, I fell.” Bajwa told reporters that Pakistani security forces reached the school 15 minutes after the attack began. They found, he said, “the children ... drenched in blood, with their bodies on top of each other.” Most of those killed were between the ages of 12 and 16, said Pervez Khattak, chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, of which Peshawar is the capital. But some adults in the school also were targets, like a 28-year-old office assistant who was shot and then burned alive, police official Faisal Shehzad said. http://www.cnn.com/2014

Pakistan IDP Figures Analysis
IDMC estimates that there are at least 1.15 million IDPs in Pakistan as of June 2014 This estimate combines the figures of recent and protracted IDPs. An estimated five million people have been displaced in the north-west of the country since 2004. IDP movements peaked in 2009 when three million people were forced to flee their homes. IDMC’s estimate is based on the number of IDPs profiled by the IDP Vulnerability and Assessment and Profiling project (IVAP), in DI Khan, Hangu, Kohat, Kurram, Nowshera, Peshawar, and Charsadda districts of Khyber Pakhunkwa (KP) province and 73,665 IDPs registered by UNHCR in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and KP province, excluding the seven districts profiled by IVAP. In addition, IDMC’s estimate includes 23,000 unregistered IDPs from North Waziristan and some 175,000 IDPs estimated to be living in protracted displacement in other areas of the country. Recent displacement At least 457,000 people have been newly displaced in North Waziristan following air strikes carried out by the Pakistan Air Force, in the context of the conflict between the central authorities and armed groups. Displacement in North Waziristan has taken place in three waves:
•In mid-January 2014, around 24,000 individuals fled insecurity due to hostilities between the government and the Tehrik-iTaliban Pakistan (TTP). Most IDPs returned home in February. •In February 2014, an estimated 23,000 fled the area to neighbouring districts following another offensive by the Pakistan Air Force. •On 22 May 2014, some tens of thousands of IDPs fled one day after the Pakistani Army carried out air strikes targeting alleged militant hideouts. Those displacements were not monitored. On 16 June, the number of IDPs was 61,400. By 21 June the number had reached 234,000 and continues to rise. The area was officially ‘notified’ by government authorities on 18 June as a “conflictaffected” area, following the declaration of Operation Zarb-e-Azb (the sharp strike). Protracted displacement In addition to this third and massive last wave of displacement in May 2014, some 690’000 people have been living in protracted displacement, some for several years. •476,000 IDPs profiled by the IDP Vulnerability and Assessment and Profiling project (IVAP), in the following six districts: Dera Ismael Khan, Hangu, Kohat, Nowshera, Peshawar, and Charsadda. As for Kurram district, it saw a decrease in the number of IDPs previously profiled by IVAP due to returns. Therefore, IDMC uses the number given by UNHCR for Kurram district. •59,700 IDPs registered by UNHCR in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and KP province (excluding the six districts profiled by IVAP). •157,000 IDPs in other areas of the country since 2009. According to UNHCR, as of 24 June 2014 930,000 individuals were registered as internally displaced in the country. However, this figure does not reflect the total number of IDPs (see below) and does not include the new displacement situation in North Waziristan. In 2014, a UNHCR/IVAP data consolida-
tion exercise identified more than 85,000 unregistered IDPs in the seven districts profiled by IVAP. M o r e o v e r, an unknown number of unregistered IDPs live in rural and urban areas elsewhere in Pakistan. Due to the lack of reliable information sources available, these IDPs are not included in IDMC’s total IDP figure. Overall, an estimated five million people have been displaced in the north-west of the country since 2004. IDP movements peaked in 2009 when three million people were forced to flee their homes. This global cumulative figure encompasses both conflictrelated and natural hazard-related IDPs. Figures analysis IVAP is an independent profiling organization, which conducts door-to-door assessments of IDPs, based on the IDP definition contained in the Guiding Principles on Internal displacement. IVAP and UNHCR report on displacement in Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KP) province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in north-west Pakistan only. UNHCR registers IDPs on behalf of the disaster management authorities in KP and FATA, and its figures are based on government-defined IDP registration criteria, which do not overlap with the IDP definition contained in the Guiding Principles. To be eligible for registration, IDPs must possess, or have proof of applying for, a computerized national identification card (CNIC), with an individual family number. The CNIC must indicate a place of origin and a current or permanent address in an area which has been ‘notified’ by the government as “conflict-affected”. For this reason, UN-
The decision was taken during a high level security meeting chaired by the premier in the wake of the successful completion of targeted operation in Fata. HCR figures do not reflect the total number of IDPs, since many displaced do not have such a document. Returnees According to OCHA, more than 1.4 million people have returned to FATA since 2009 and continue to try to recover their livelihoods and rebuild their lives. In 2013, more than 108,000 IDPs from FATA returned to their homes and were deregistered. Largescale returns of IDPs to Tirah Valley have been conducted, with a total of 50,500 IDPs returning in 2014. However, extremely limited information is available on progress made towards durable solutions following return. Natural hazards-related IDPs Disasters brought on by natural hazards have also led to huge displacement in Pakistan, including in the north-west. In July 2010, monsoon flooding caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and livelihoods in KP, particularly in Peshawar, Swat, Charsadda and Tank districts. FATA was also affected. Subsequent flooding took place in 2011 and 2012. Two powerful earthquakes hit southwestern Baluchistan in quick succession in September 2013 causing extensive damage to life and property. According to official figures, the seven-plus magnitude earthquakes left 399 people dead and over 185,000 severely affected. Adequate investment in flood warning systems and disaster risk reduction programmes and other preparedness measures are needed. http://www.internal-displacement.org

Enemy Becomes a Friend By: Fatima Nadeem Grade 7, Surrey In the sixth year after the hijrah, the Prophet S.A.W decided to expand the scope of his mission. He sent eight letters to rulers in the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding areas inviting them to Islam. One of these rulers was Thumamah ibn Uthal. Thumamah was one of the most powerful Arab rulers in pre-Qur’anic times. This is not surprising since he was a chieftain of the Banu Hanifah and one of the rulers of al- Yamamah whose word no one dared to challenge or disobey. When Thumamah received the Prophet’s letter, he was consumed by anger and rejected it. He refused to listen to the invitation of Truth and goodness. More than that, he felt a strong desire to go and kill the Prophet and bury his mission with him. Thumamah waited and waited for a convenient time to carry out his design against the Prophet until eventually forgetfulness caused him to lose interest. One of his uncles, however, reminded him of his plan, praising what he intended to do. In the pursuit of his evil design against the Prophet, Thumamah met and killed a group of the Prophet’s companions. The Prophet there upon declared him a wanted man who could lawfully be killed on sight. Not long afterwards, Thumamah decided to perform Umrah. He wanted to perform tawaf around the Ka’bah and sacrifice to the idols there (The people of Makkah, before becoming Muslims, placed hundreds of idols in the Holy Ka’bah. These idols were later destroyed by the Prophet). So he left al-Yamamah for Makkah. As he was passing near Madinah, an incident took place which he had not anticipated. Groups of Muslims were patrolling the districts of Madinah and outlying areas on the lookout for any strangers or anyone intent on causing trouble. One of these groups came upon Thumamah and apprehended him but they did not know who he was. They took him to Madinah and tied him to one of the columns in the mosque. They waited for the Prophet himself to question the man and decide what should be done with him. When the Prophet was about to enter the mosque, he saw Thumamah and asked his companions, “Do you know whom you have taken?” “No,
messenger of God,” they replied. “This is Thumamah ibn Uthal al-Hanafi,” he said. “You have done well in capturing him.” The Prophet then returned home to his family and said, “Get what food you can and send it to Thumamah ibn Uthal.” He then ordered his camel to be milked for him. All this was done before he met Thumamah or had spoken to him. The Prophet then approached Thumamah hoping to encourage him to become a Muslim. “What do you have to say for yourself” he asked. “If you want to kill in reprisal,” Thumamah replied, “you can have someone of noble blood to kill. If, out of your bounty, you want to forgive, I shall be grateful. If you want money in compensation, I shall give you whatever amount you ask.” The Prophet then left him for two days, but still personally sent him food and drink and milk from his camel. The Prophet went back to him and asked, “What do you have to say for yourself” Thumamah repeated what he had said the day before. The Prophet then left and came back to him the following day. “What do you have to say for yourself?” he asked again and Thumamah repeated what he had said once more. Then the Prophet turned to his companions and said, “Set him free.” Thumamah left the mosque of the Prophet and rode until he came to a palm grove on the outskirts of Madinah near al-Baqi’ (a place of luxuriant vegetation which later became a cemetery for many of the Prophet’s companions). He watered his camel and washed himself well. Then he turned back and made his way to the Prophet’s mosque. There, he stood before a congregation of Muslims and said,”I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.” He then went to the Prophet, upon whom be peace, and said, “O Muhammad, by God, there was never on this earth a face more detestable than yours. Now, yours is the dearest face of all to me.” “I have killed some of your men,” he continued, “I am at your mercy. What will you have done to me?” “There is now no blame on you, Thumamah,” replied the Prophet. “Becoming a Muslim obliterates past actions and marks a new beginning.”
Believe! By Rahma Khan Belief is very important in our life. We need it to gain self confidence, and do great things that we are very proud of today. Without believing, you wouldn’t even be able to accomplish great things. You must have belief that you can achieve any of your goals or wishes, because you know why? You are perfectly capable of doing it. All you have to do is two things: believe and strive. That is why you have to believe. Because if you don’t believe, you won’t even bother to strive- you see? But another very important thing to know is that you have to strive along with your belief. Because you can’t believe alone, without working for it. It won’t come by itself. You have to have a strong intention to achieve your goals, and then, you must also strive and work for that goal to be achieved. You should take in the good things and keep it up, avoid the bad things and find ways to improve them. Allah SWT appreciates that as well. Allah SWT mentioned in the Quran: “By the time! Surely, humankind is in loss – except who believe and perform righteous deeds , and strive together for truth, and strive together for patience.” (Surah ‘Asr) “You can have all the tools you want, but if you don’t believe, they are useless” - Ken Jeong.

LIFE AND TIMES OF Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah
“Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.” — Stanley Wolpert 137th Birth Day of Quaid e Azam Pakistan, one of the largest Muslim states in the world, is a living and exemplary monument of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. With his untiring efforts, indomitable will, and dauntless courage, he united the Indian Muslims under the banner of the Muslim League and carved out a homeland for them, despite stiff opposition from the Hindu Congress and the British Government. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born in Karachi on December 25, 1876. His father Jinnah Poonja was an Ismaili Khoja of Kathiawar, a prosperous business community. Muhammad Ali received his early education at the Sindh Madrasa and later at the Mission School, Karachi. He went to England for
further studies in 1892 at the age of 16. In 1896, Jinnah qualified for the Bar and was called to the Bar in 1897. Muhammad Ali Jinnah started his political career in 1906 when he attended the Calcutta session of the All India National Congress in the capacity of Private Secretary to the President of the Congress. In 1910, he was elected to the Imperial Legislative Council. He sponsored the Waqf Validating Bill, which brought him in touch with other Muslim leaders. In March 1913, Jinnah joined the All India Muslim League. As a member of the Muslim League, Jin-
April 19, 1918, Jinnah married Rutanbai. Their daughter, Dina was born a year later. In 1919, Jinnah resigned from his membership of the Imperial Legislative Council as protest against the “Rowlatt Act”. Until the publication of Nehru Report, Jinnah continued his efforts for Hindu-Muslim unity. The Nehru Report, published in 1928, was severely criticized by all sections of the Muslim community. In December 1928, the National Convention was called to consider the Report. Jinnah proposed some amendments, but they were all rejected. He finally parted ways with the Congress. In 1929, Jinnah presented his famous Fourteen Points in response to the Nehru Report. When he returned from England, he reorganized the Muslim League. In 1934, he was elected as its permanent president. The Provincial Assembly elections of 1937 swept the Congress to power in eight provinces. After almost two years of oppressive rule, Muslims under the leadership of Jinnah, celebrated the Day of Deliverance at the end of Congress rule. The Muslim League held its annual session at Lahore in March 1940. This was presided over by Quaid-i-Azam. The demand for Pakistan was formally put forward here. This goal
nah began to work for Hindu-Muslim unity. In 1917, the annual sessions of both the Congress and the League were held at Lucknow. The League session was presided over by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It marked the culmination of his efforts towards Hindu-Muslim unity. Here, both the League and the Congress adopted a scheme of reforms known as the Lucknow Pact. On

was realized on August 14, 1947. Quaid-iAzam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was appointed as its first Governor General. The establishment of Pakistan brought even greater responsibilities for Jinnah. The refugee problem, the withholding of Pakistani assets by India, and the Kashmir problem were a real test for the Quaid. However, his indomitable will prevailed. He worked out a sound economic policy, established an independent currency and the State Bank for Pakistan. He chose Karachi as the federal capital. However, he did not live long to witness the progress of the state that he had founded. On September 11, 1948, he died after a protracted illness at Karachi. He was buried in Karachi that witnessed the entire nation mourning over an irreparable loss.

Afridi to quit ODIs after World Cup
Shahid Afridi has said that he will retire from ODIs after the 2015 World Cup. The allrounder will continue to play T20 cricket, the format in which he leads Pakistan, and wants to win the 2016 World T20 in India before quitting international cricket. Afridi had stepped in as ODI captain in the recent series against New Zealand in the UAE in place of the injured Misbah-ul-Haq. He put in a strong all-round performance, with 205 runs at a strike-rate of 164 and eight wickets at an economy-rate of 4.03. Afridi told reporters in Karachi that he wanted to go out on a high rather than being asked to leave. “I am the first Pakistan player to be able to announce his
retirement properly,” Afridi was quoted as saying by Reuters. “I always wanted to do this having seen the problems faced by other bigger players in the past. It was not an easy decision to take and I think many of my seniors also found it difficult to go out at the right time. “I want to go out of ODIs with selfrespect and with my fans wanting more from me. But no one is indispensable in cricket and I am sure sooner or later someone will take my place in ODIs as well. “I have informed the Pakistan team management about my decision but not the cricket board as yet. Having taken a decision it is a big burden off my mind and I am confident I will be able to focus on
giving my best in the World Cup.” Afridi, who will turn 35 during the World Cup, has played 389 ODIs since hitting the fastest century in his debut innings in October 1996 against Sri Lanka in Nairobi. The record stood for more than 17 years before New Zealand’s Corey Anderson broke it in January this year. “I am happy about my achievements and records but the only regret I have is losing fastest ODI century record,” Afridi tweeted. He has scored 7870 ODI runs at an average of 23.49 and a strike-rate of 116.29. He has also taken 391 wickets, the sixth-most in ODIs, at 33.89 and an economy-rate of 4.62. Afridi had quit Tests in 2010 before leading Pakistan to the semifinals of the 2011 World Cup. Afridi’s fitness
Shahnaz dismayed over FIH-IHF’s treatment to Pakistan hockey team
SLAMABAD: Manager-cum-chief coach Shahnaz Sheikh is shocked at the treatment meted out to the Pakistan hockey team by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Indian Hockey Federation during the recently concluded 35th FIH Champions Trophy in Bhubneshwar. The FIH put a ban on two Pakistan players for one match each, in the aftermath of Pakistan’s victory over India in the Champions Trophy semifinal. The FIH put one match ban each on Amjad Hussain and Tauseeq Ahmed for misconduct, while Shafqat Rasool was let off with a warning. The duo were not able to represent Pakistan in the final against Germany. Pakistan lost the final against Germany 0-2. After comprehensively winning the semifinal 4-3 against India, Pakistan players removed their shirts, started dancing in jubilation, and raised obscene gestures towards the crowd. Shahnaz tendered an apology for wild celebrations by the players but India’s hockey chief
demanded an action and the FIH succumbed to the IHF pressure and suspended Pakistan players. The IHF also lashed out at the FIH for not taking more action against the Pakistan and threatened not to host world meets in future. “It was a conspiracy against the Pakistan team and I was forced to apologise. And I apologised in the interest of our hockey,” he said on Wednesday. Former Olympian Shahnaz strongly defended his players for their celebration and added that a non-issue was blown out of proportions. He declared it a conspiracy that denied Pakistan to regain the title after almost two decades. Swift forward of his era, Shahnaz admitted that suspension on Tousiq and Amjad affected the performance of the team in the final. “Had the issue not been blown out of proportion, Pakistan team had the chance to win the title against Germany.” He said he was given tough time by the FIH and IHF for nearly four hours before the issue of ‘wild celebrations’ was settled with an apology
ahead of the final. Shahnaz said goal-scoring celebrations were the part of game the world over and his boys were unnecessarily punished by the FIH. He expressed the hope the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) would take up the issue with the FIH for treatment meted out to the national team. He said despite the situation the greenshirts were not provided any security and they travelled on their own from New Delhi to Amritsar. “Treatment of the Indian officials at the Attari Border was also not courteous, which was very disappointing. Travelling without any security could have caused any mishap. But luckily the team arrived safely back in Lahore,” he maintaied. He called for unity among the nation to deal such issues with India. Shahnaz said his team were unable to perform well in the league round because they were appearing in major international event for the first time in 18 months. “Pakistan did not play badly against Belgium and Australia but I was deeply disappointed
has been a matter of some concern in recent times and he was among some Pakistan players fined by the PCB in September for failing to maintain the prescribed level of fitness. The PCB had attached greater importance to fitness in its new contracts and the players will be reassessed this month. Source: Cricinfo
with the 8-2 loss against England. But despite three defeats, I had a ray of hope and I am absolutely delighted the way my team made a comeback in the quarterfinal and semifinal.” He said angels were helping his teams when they beat India 4-3 in a highly tense match. He complimented his team for restoring the pride of Pakistan hockey as they came from nowhere to return with a silver medal. “Hats off to my team for their fighting and sporting spirit. My mission is to help Pakistan team to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics,” he concluded. Source: dailytimes.com.pk
