Saudi’s King Salman pledges development in first speech
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud vowed that low oil prices would not halt progress in his country, and promised to defend Arab and Muslim causes around the world in his first major policy speech since assuming the throne. In Tuesday’s televised address, King Salman also promised improvements in education and healthcare, and to find solutions for affordable housing shortages. In an acknowledgement of the kingdom’s
burgeoning young population, the 79-year-old monarch urged businesses to help create jobs, calling it a national duty. King Salman assumed the throne in January after King Abdullah’s death. “Every citizen in the country and every region of our nation are of my concern, interest and care,” King Salman said, adding that all Saudis are equal before his eyes. Throughout the speech, he addressed both men and women, referring to them as “brothers and sisters” and “my sons and daughters”. The conservative country has been criticised for its limited women’s rights. Further than the much-publicised prohibition of women to drive, every woman in Saudi Arabia must have a male guardian - usually a husband or father, Continued on pg 6

A Strategic Game Changer
With hardship comes ease: Hopefully, Pakistan is poised for good economic times ahead: It has Saudi Arabia and China as reliable allies. The fact is both China and Saudi Arabia are also strategically important to each other. No doubt, China being “an all weather friend of Pakistan” wants to further strengthen its existing relationship through investing there heavily in pursuit of long-term gain. The recent CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) agreements clearly show China’s intent to deepen its ties with Pakistan in the long run. There is an unprecedented state of joy after the successful conclusion of the Chinese president’s visit. Investment of over $46 billion in the energy sector, infrastructure and the projected economic corridor can be a real game changer in the making. The huge Chinese investment is indicative of Pakistan’s sovereignty is safe from all pressures. Unpleasant facts: Firstly, Pakistani people welcome the above said investment but it’s painful for them to learn that some members of the elite class of Pakistan have deposited a huge sum totalling around $97 billion in the Swiss banks. Even the ruling elite (current and the former) have deposits in London banks and Dubai banks as well. Most of the money belongs to the national exchequer of Pakistan. Upon re-investing all such money back in Pakistan instead, would serve the interests of Pakistan for sure. Secondly, discriminating against provinces set a bad example: During the state visit of Chinese president, taking only the Chief Minister Punjab on board while ignoring all other chief ministers altogether is unfair; this sets a bad example. The silly ruling elite are responsible for the re-
sulted irritation, indeed. Good News: Democratic thoughts are taking over; the security threats against Pakistan are dying down. And, there is another positive development: The Supreme Court ordered LG polls have been conducted transparently. All of this gives a real boost to the current government. Furthermore, China’s partnership with Pakistan is said to be hinging on the assumption that there would remain calm from now on; that would open doors for smoother business. Chinese want smooth sailing through this route while earning profit on their money. The burden of maintaining long-term order clearly lies with Pakistan. Pak re-positioning: The fact is Pakistan security forces are already too engaged on many fronts to make Pakistan fully secured from all internal and external threats. As said above, President Xi Jinping visited Pakistan with huge investment to build an economic corridor from Western China to the Persian Gulf. The Sharifs promised Xi that Pakistan would create a new special division of the Pakistani Army to protect Chinese workers in Pakistan. A special security division consisting of 10,000 troops including 5000 SSG commandos. There are no troops for Saudi Arabia at this time. Of course, Pakistan’s handling of Yemen factor did irk Saudi Arabia initially, however, Pakistan’s re-assurance eased tension as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the army chief Raheel Sharif visited Riyadh for a timely damage control. Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia has rightly realized that even close allies often have other priorities. The PM Pakistan and Pak army Chief had to fly to Saudi Arabia to explain
to the Saudis why Pakistan won’t join the war in Yemen. The corridor: The importance of long awaited development can’t be over emphasized. Certainly, the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a development megaproject that aims to connect Gwadar Port in southwestern Pakistan to China’s northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang, via a network of Highways, Railways and pipelines to transport oil and gas.“Pakistan-China friendship is higher than the mountains, deeper than the oceans, sweeter than honey, and stronger than steel.” [14] Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post has described the project in an editorial as the most significant and far-reaching project China has ever put forward. It seeks to expand the Chinese economy by first creating mega project construction opportunities for Chinese firms and then by spreading out markets for its manufactured goods. The plan is to accelerate growth in China’s western regions and then integrate China’s markets with Eurasia, the Middle East and Africa. Its one component, the Silk Road Economic Belt would connect Western China to Central Asia and Europe overland, while the other, the 21stCentury Maritime Silk Road would substantiate the link between Chinese seaports and the Middle East, Africa and the Mediterranean. Two kinds of projects are to be implemented under the proposed economic corridor: A - Infrastructure projects (Gwadar Port, KKR highway, road and rail development (government to government). B - The 10,000MW of power projects, (most of them to be sponsored
by private Pakistani companies). Chinese state companies do possess a “demonstrated ability” to execute the infrastructure projects efficiently on time. Security situation: Pakistan Army will provide dedicated security. The fear: Pak bureaucratic incompetence or corruption may hinder the implementation of these projects. Benefits: The successful implementation of the economic corridor projects would create ancillary opportunities and benefits as follows: 1.Energy availability would revive existing industries, such as textiles, to full production and add an estimated 2 percent to Pakistan’s GDP growth. 2.The improved transportation network would accelerate and expand internal and external trade. 3The areas adjacent to the corridor would become attractive locations for manufacturing, agricultural and services industries. Small and medium enterprises included as special beneficiaries. 4.Employment and economic growth would expand significantly. The Chinese commitment to the economic corridor has created a significant opportunity for Pakistan to revive its economic and political stability leading to its renewed international image. Most of the Pakistanis are on the same page with the government for having made a strategic calculation to go all the way with China on this path of prosperity. It is a step in the right direction that can potentially shake regional politics making enough room for geo economics. Source: www. Mp Sandhu Pressures Government To Stop Gang Violence In Surrey By: MP Jasbir Sandhu Surrey North In the midst of a gang turf war in Surrey that has resulted in an alarming number of shootings and one homicide, Jasbir Sandhu, MP for Surrey North, rose in the House of Commons today to slam the Conservative government for not making public safety a priority. The recent spate of shootings in Surrey has underscored the need to address gang-related violence in Canada, a need which MP Sandhu has been actively highlighting since 2011. “The violence in Surrey has reached crisis levels. There was another shooting yesterday. That is 25 shootings in the last 8 weeks alone. People in my community are worried for their safety and the safety of their families” explained MP Sandhu. Surrey residents have been gathering and urging the government to step in and provide more education and outreach programs to end gang-related violence. “Yet, the Conservative 2015 budget didn’t even mention crime prevention, gangs or Surrey. Conservative cuts have left the RCMP unable to
manage key crime databases and forensic services. Will the Conservatives stop making excuses and start protecting the public in Surrey?” asked MP Sandhu. To address this growing problem, Jasbir Sandhu also introduced motion M-407 in the House of Commons calling on the Government to provide stable, long-term funding for youth gang prevention and intervention programs. Conservatives will soon have a chance to vote in favor of this motion and work towards keeping our streets safe.
Forum on Surrey Crime Issues By: Darlene Bowyer Surrey Resident I attended the forum at Tamanawis High School last week dealing with the current crime issues in Surrey.I appreciate the work that is being done by our RCMP and know that this is a very trying time for all police departments that are investigating this matter. It is hard to get evidence and lay charges when there is a code of silence from both the victims and their families. There is a reason these young offenders are doing these crimes. They feel that nothing will happen to them even if they do get caught. If they knew there was a serious consequence, they would think twice before they got involved. It’s that revolving door of justice that keeps these type of crimes occurring in our communities. Now even the families are supporting them in their illegal activities, with their code of silence, as they are bringing in tens of thousands of untaxed
dollars to the household every year. Although the forum was informative, I thought that a lot more time could have been dedicated to listening to the audience. Using the first hour and a half telling us what was being done gave control over the evening events, but it was information we already knew from the TV, radio and newspapers . It was good to see that the Mayor is now willing to talk about crime issues in Surrey. If you do not talk about your problems ,you are not working towards finding solutions. I still feel there a disconnect and that resonated with the gentleman who told mayor and council that they need to get out of their palace and into our communities where we can see them actually involved with trying to find solutions to our community problems. He received the loudest applause of the evening . I did not leave the meeting feeling that it was all smoke and mirrors, our Officer In Charge did a good job and I felt he truly does care . The rows of politicians that were there did not engage with the audience very well afterwards and unfortunately I felt that they were only there to save face with their electorate and for the photo op . I tried to have a conversation with my MLA afterwards ,he was happy to see me but he was more interested in doing a television interview and off he went. I was encouraged by the story told by the young man brought in as an example of a success story for the youth at risk program administered by the School Board . On the other hand, another young man from the audience said he saw the pictures of the persons of interest posted in the paper by the RCMP and was not surprised at who they were. He went to school with them and
everyone knew they were up to no good...so this tells me that there are many of them falling through the cracks, if fellow classmates knew they had chosen the wrong path, teachers certainly should have known, and it went unreported. I do not want to hear one more time that the public is not at risk. When we have shootings throughout our neighbourhoods and streets in the middle of the day , we are at risk. Personally, if I had done my banking 15 minutes later a couple of weeks ago I would have been right at the corner were the bullets were flying. When the City of Vancouver had crime problems in the late 1990 ‘s all levels of governments met and the Federal government came forward with millions of dollars to help them put together safe injection sites, put in programs and beaf up their police department. A document was put together called the Vancouver Agreement. For a year and a half now Surrey Community Associations and Groups have been requesting that the City of Surrey put together a multi-level governmental meeting so that we may find solutions to crime problems in Surrey. Possibly have our own Surrey Agreement. We are still waiting.

Peshawar floods: At least 44 killed after heavy rain, flooding in Pakistan
Intense rain and strong winds buffeted the city and adjacent districts late on Sunday, felling trees, causing dozens of roofs and walls to collapse and blocking many roads. Floodwater from torrential rainfall had reached one metre deep in some parts of the city of more than 3 million people. “At least 44 people have been killed and 202 wounded. The storm followed by heavy rain and hailstorm has severely damaged wheat crops and orchards,” provincial information minister Mushtaq Ghani told AFP. Mr Ghani said that authorities were estimating the losses and expressed fear that hundreds of cattle had been killed. Pakistani people drive their vehicles during heavy rain in Peshawar, Pakistan Aamir Afaq, a senior official of the provincial disaster management authority, confirmed the death toll and said that efforts were underway to provide food, shelter and emergency medical services to those affected. Mushtaq Ali Shah, director of the provincial meteorological department, described the storm as a “mini cyclone”. “Its speed in the open was more than 120 kilometres per hour and that’s what caused destruction on such a large
scale. It’s a completely new phenomenon in this region,” he said. He said the cyclone had lost speed but heavy rainfall was expected in the province’s northern districts for a number of hours. The wind, accompanied by heavy rain and hail late on Sunday, disrupted power supplies and telecommunications services and damaged infrastructure and crops, district official Riaz Mehsud said. The military was also called in to boost rescue efforts, equipped with ground penetrating radars, concrete cutters and sniffer dogs, according to a tweet by the army spokesman.Prime minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his grief over the loss of life and property. “He extended condolences to the aggrieved families and asked provincial government and disaster management authorities to gear up rescue efforts so as to control the damage,” a statement by his office said. Safety standards, particularly in construction, are very lax in economically underdeveloped Pakistan. Many of the more than 200 killed in last year’s heavy monsoon rains died after roofs collapses. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has reiterated that any aggression on Saudi Arabia will be dealt with strongly and effectively by Pakistan. “I’m saying once again that any aggression on Saudi Arabia will be dealt with strongly and effectively,” the prime minister said in an interview with Okaz/Saudi Gazette. To a question, he welcomed the UN Security Council resolution on Yemen and said that Pakistan would contribute to its implementation. About his visit to Saudi Arabia and his meeting with the Saudi leadership, the prime minister said he affirmed to the Saudi leadership that any violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia would evoke a strong response from Pakistan. “We will always stand with our Saudi brothers in their hour
of need. Pakistan gives top priority to the Kingdom’s defence and security and could never stay silent on threats to Saudi Arabia,” he added. Nawaz said he held detailed discussions with King Salman on the Yemen crisis. “I expressed my government’s total solidarity with Saudi Arabia.” To a question, the prime minister said the people and the government of Pakistan greatly value the holy land of Saudi Arabia, where Harmain Al-Shareefain were also located. Besides excellent political relations at the highest level, he said both the countries had a high-level of economic, defence and security cooperation and closely cooperated at international forums like the UN, NAM, G-77, OIC, etc. He said both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia worked together and supported each other on issues of mutual interests. The historic friendship between the two countries, he added, had turned into a strategic partnership that also facilitated their constructive role in the maintenance of international peace and security. Nawaz said the UN Security Council resolution adopted on April 14, 2015, which provides a framework for early resolution of the crisis in Yemen, was driven by the vision of the Saudi leadership. “We are confident that this will be helpful in bringing in an early end to the ongoing difficult situation in Yemen,” he added. To a question, the prime minister said that Pakistan strongly condemned the violent overthrow of the legitimate government of President (Abdrabbu Mansour) Hadi by the Houthis. “We welcome the decision taken to end the Decisive Storm Operation and we support the endeavours for early settlement of the crisis in Yemen,” he said. Nawaz said that Pakistan had affirmed to the leadership of Saudi Arabia that the government of Pakistan would: (a) fully
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Wednesday has said that the prime minister is bound to dissolve assemblies and call an interim government if rigging in proved. He expressed these views while talking to the journalists in Multan. He said 2015 will be an election year. Qureshi said that the PTI has returned to the parliament after the establishment of judicial commission and the people who are criticizing the party’s decision are the same who had urged the PTI to return during sit-in. Qureshi said that the PTI’s return to the parliament is annoying some the Pakistan Muslim League-N leaders however; the party would unveil the faces of those who were involved in rigging. He said that evidence pertaining to rigging in the 2013 elections had been submitted to the judicial
commission. “The evidence is linked to the polling bags which will reveal if laws were violated or not. The truth will not come out until the polling bags are opened.” He added that if election rigging was proven in the judicial commission the government will not be allowed to run. While talking about the NA-246 by-election, he said that PTI has broken the shackles of fear orchestrated by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He added that the PMLN and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) did not even participate in the election out of fear. The PTI vice-chairman said that the PTI has accepted the results as a fair election was conducted. He said that farmers in Punjab were being exploited as they were not getting appropriate prices for their crops. Source: dailytimes.com.pk

participate and contribute to the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution, and discussed the possibility of expanding Pakistan’s cooperation with Saudi Arabia in compatibility with the UN resolution; and (b) enhance its cooperation in view of increasing threats to the region from different terrorist groups. To a question about parliament’s resolution, he said there should not have been any misunderstanding had the resolution been read in its correct perspective. “Nevertheless, I sent my special envoy to Saudi Arabia on April 15, accompanied by my adviser on national security and foreign affairs, the foreign secretary and the chief of general staff. The visit served the purpose of removing any such misperception and helped reinforce our resolve to strengthen our ties,” he added. About Pakistan-India relations, the prime minister said he firmly believed that peace, security and stability in the region were essential for socio-economic development in the country and the region. “We are making earnest efforts for friendly relations with all, particularly with our neighbours. I took an exceptional decision to attend the inaugural ceremony of Prime Minister Modi. I sincerely wanted to take the process of friendship with India forward from where it was interrupted during my last tenure,” he added. However, his desire for good neighbourly relations with India, he said, had not been reciprocated. India unilaterally called-off the bilateral dialogue process on a frivolous pretext, he added. About Kashmir, the prime minister said it was the core issue between Pakistan and India and Pakistan’s policy was based on principles that this issue should be resolved on the basis of relevant UN resolutions and aspirations of people of Kashmir and this was essential for the normalization of relations between India and Pakistan. Palestinians in Israel strike over home demolitions
When Israeli police and border patrol arrived in the Galilee region village of Kafr Kanna around 1:30am on April 13, they wasted no time getting to work. Their bulldozers rolled through local resident Tareq al-Khatib’s home within a matter of minutes, leaving him and his family without shelter. Waseem Abbas, secretary of Kafr Kanna’s branch of the Balad political party, said he and other locals were in a nearby mosque when the police arrived. “It happened suddenly,” he told Al Jazeera. “They entered the village from a back path and went straight to the house.” As the news spread, locals showed up at the scene and confronted police. “We were trying to negotiate with them to let the family at least [take out] their belongings,” he said. “They responded very violently and surrounded us.” Although police did not make any arrests, clashes quickly broke out and six protesters sustained minor injuries. The municipality and local political factions staged a general strike in the village the following day. An Israeli police spokesperson did not reply to Al Jazeera’s request for comment. “People here are very upset. The anger is growing here and we won’t be quiet,” Abbas said, noting Israeli police also shot and killed a 22-year-old from Kafr Kanna last November. Though Israel justified the recent demolition by pointing out that the house was built without the proper permits, Abbas argued that local residents have been repeatedly denied building permits. Another demolition was carried out overnight just two days later in Dahmash, a Palestinian village slated for demolition in central Israel. Eighteen members of the Assaf family were left displaced, according to the Arabs48 news website. Palestinians in Israel have responded by staging protests across the country, while the Higher Follow-
up Committee, a political body that represents the 1.7 million Palestinian minority in Israel, has called for a nationwide general strike on Tuesday. In Wadi Ara, a Galilee village, dozens of demonstrators gathered over the weekend to decry Israel’s home demolitions. In Qalansawe, another Palestinian village in the Triangle region of central Israel, protesters gathered on Saturday and called on Israel to halt its demolitions of homes in Arab communities. Locals flooded the streets of nearby Taybeh, where Israeli authorities plan to confiscate some 2,000 dunams (nearly 202 hectares) of agricultural land, and called on the government to halt home demolitions and land confiscations. Palestinians with Israeli citizenship live in cities, towns, and villages across the country and suffer from dozens of discriminatory laws that limit their access to state resources - including land - and stifle their political freedoms, according to Adalah, a Haifabased legal centre. Majd Kayyal, Adalah’s media coordinator, explained that “hundreds and hundreds of homes” have pending demolition orders. “In many Arab villages,
Parole changes have increased prison populations and costs, audit reveals
The federal prison service is making it harder for inmates to get parole, triggering a spike in prisoner populations, a sharp increase in costs and a hike in the number of maximumsecurity ex-convicts released directly into communities. In a report tabled Tuesday morning, Auditor-General Michael Ferguson revealed that the slowing pace of releases has contributed to a 6-per-cent increase in prison populations over the past four years – from 13,750 in 2010-11 to 14,550 in the past fiscal year – and a $91-million jump in custody costs. As a whole, the audit adds substance to the position that opposition politicians and prisoner advocacy groups have taken for some time: that under the Harper Conservatives, prison populations have become bigger, pricier and potentially more dangerous, even as the country’s crime rate drops. “Not only are you imperilling the community, but there is a greater cost as well,” said Catherine Latimer, executive director of the John Howard Society. “People are coming out in greater numbers at statutory release when they have not taken the programming that would make them more likely to succeed at being law-abiding citizens.” Most federal offenders are entitled to consideration for early conditional release after completing one-third of their sentence in prison. The next phase of their sentence, parole, is designed to ease them into a life of virtue. Data from Correctional Service Canada (CSC) and the parole board indicate that offenders released on parole are far less likely to reoffend than those discharged directly into communities after their maximum prison time, or statutory release date, is up. Yet the Auditor-General found that more inmates have to wait until their full sentence expires before re-entering society. In 2013-14, 54 per cent of offenders stayed in prison until their statutory release date. Of those, 64 per cent joined the community
directly from medium-security prisons, with another 11 per cent coming from maximumsecurity institutions, a potentially turbulent transition with grave public safety risks, according to the Auditor-General. “The way the federal system is supposed to work is you cascade down from maximum to medium to minimum before being released to the community,” Ms. Latimer said. “It’s in minimum that you get work release and other things that prepare for transition to community. To come directly from medium or maximum puts the community more at risk.” One reason for the decline in early release is the low rate of offenders completing rehabilitation programming, which can consist of anything from literacy classes, to parenting tutorials, to substance-abuse interventions to job-hunting seminars. Completing the schooling plays a key role in obtaining parole, but in 2013-14, 65 per cent of inmates failed to complete their classes in time for early release eligibility. The Auditor-General pinned that poor completion rate on CSC, accusing the agency of withholding programming referrals for low-risk inmates – the inmates most likely to obtain early release – and running an unfocused, haphazard programming regimen. For instance, just 5 per cent of the offenders taking employment classes actually needed to improve their employability prospects, according to the audit. Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, meanwhile, put a positive spin on the audit’s finding. “I am pleased that the Auditor-General found that our ‘truth in sentencing’ measures have worked because more prisoners are staying behind bars for a greater portion of their sentence,” the minister’s spokesman said in an e-mailed statement. “Our Government believes that criminals belong behind bars and should not be released into Canadian society until they are no longer a threat to law-abiding citizens
the government often doesn’t approve master plans,” he told Al Jazeera, “and without master plans, local residents cannot obtain building permits. “Palestinians are given no option but to build illegally because these communities suffer from overcrowding,” Kayyal added. “The decision to demolish homes is a political decision at the end of the day. The solution for the housing crisis is very clear. There is plenty of land, but there is no clear planning policy for Arab villages and preference for land is given to Jewish Israelis.” Kayyal added that only four percent of building in 2014 took place in Arab villages, despite the Palestinian minority comprising an estimated 20 percent of the population. Nadim Nashif, director of Baladna, a Haifa-based Arab advocacy organisation, argues that Israel is implementing “a policy of interior colonisation” by pushing Palestinian citizens out of their communities. “It is the policy that [Israel] uses in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank,” he told Al Jazeera. “It isn’t new here [in Israel], but they are intensifying it right now, particularly with the new right-wing government.” In March, Prime Minister Benjamin Netan-
yahu’s hawkish Likud party triumphed over the centre-left Zionist Union party, and is now building a coalition for the next Knesset. “We expect a very bad immediate future with the upcoming government,” Nashif added, “and the housing crisis could be a spark for an uprising among Palestinians in Israel.” Though home demolitions occur across the country, they have become regular practice in the Negev region of southern Israel, home to tens of thousands of indigenous. Despite their citizenship, more than 50,000 Palestinian Bedouins live in the Negev in more than 40 “unrecognised villages” that face the threat of demolition. Under pressure as protests gripped the country, Israel in December 2013 formally shelved the Prawer Plan, legislation designed to relocate Bedouin residents of unrecognised villages to planned townships. Yousef Jabareen, a Knesset member from the left-wing Hadash party, one of four parties in the Joint Arab List, said the decision to strike was taken after the second home demolition in Dahmash. In correspondence with the general strike, a protest will be held in Tel Aviv on Tuesday night. Most Palestinians in Israel are likely to shut down their shops and abstain from going to work, and schools will be closed for the day, Jabareen predicted. “We want the government to find a substantial resolution of this issue by broadening the jurisdiction of Arab localities and providing housing options that meet the needs of the Arab communities, especially young people,” he said. Nigerian troops rescued nearly 300 girls and women during an offensive against Boko Haram fighters in the northeastern Sambisa Forest, the military said. Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade told Al Jazeera on Wednesday that it was too early to tell whether they included any of the schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok a year ago. Al Jazeera’s Yvonne Ndege, reporting from Abuja, said the Nigerian military was planning to release photos and more information of the women and girls rescued. “What we understand is that there is a screening process to find out where they are from. We managed to speak to Nigeria’s military spokesman who believes some of the women are wives of Boko Haram fighters, and the military is not ruling out the possibility that some are from the Chibok school,” our correspondent said. The Associated Press news agency, however, quoted another army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman, as saying that the 200 abducted girls and 93 women “are not the Chibok girls”. The army announced the rescue on Twitter on Tuesday and said it was screening and interviewing the abducted girls and women. Nearly 300 schoolgirls were kidnapped from the northeastern town of Chibok by the Islamic armed group Boko Haram in April 2014. The fighters took the schoolgirls in trucks into the Sambisa Forest. Dozens escaped, but 219 remain missing. The plight of the schoolgirls, who have become known as “the Chibok girls,” aroused international outrage and a campaign for their release under the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. Their kidnapping brought Boko Haram to the attention of the world, with even US first lady Michelle Obama becoming involved as she tweeted a photograph of herself holding the campaign sign. Boko Haram has kidnapped an unknown number of girls, women and young men to be used as sex slaves and fighters. Many have escaped or been released as Boko Haram has fled a multinational offensive that began at the end of January. Boko Haram has used girls and women as suicide bombers, sending them into crowded market places and elsewhere. A month ago the
Nigerian military began pounding the Sambisa Forest in air raids, an assault they said earlier they had been avoiding for fear of killing the Chibok schoolgirls, or inciting their captors to kill them. Two weeks ago, counterinsurgency spokesman Mike Omeri said a multinational offensive that began at the end of January had driven Boko Haram from all major towns in the northeast and that Nigerian forces were concentrating on the stronghold in the Sambisa Forest. Omeri said the military believed that the Chibok girls might be held there. In Chibok, community leader Pogu Bitrus said townspeople were desperately trying to verify the identity of the freed girls and women. He said the town had learned of the rescue through social media, not from the military. “We are trying to verify if there are Chibok girls among them. We are working hard to verify. ... All we know is this number have been rescued,” he said. His comments reflected a distrust of the military, which has published many misstatements about the girls and once even claimed to have rescued some, though that proved to be untrue. Unconfirmed reports over the past year had indicated the girls were broken up into smaller groups and had been forced to convert to Islam and that some were “married” off to their captors. Some witnesses said they saw the girls being ferried by canoe across Lake Chad and into neighbouring Cameroon. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau published a video in which he threatened to sell the girls as slaves. The group has been waging an increasingly deadly insurgency in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north since 2009, attacking schools teaching a “Western” curriculum, churches and government targets. Civilians have borne the brunt of the violence, according to human rights group Amnesty International, more that 5,500 civilians have been killed and more than 1.5 million people, including 800,000 children, have fled their homes due to the violence. Boko Haram implements a strict interpretation of Islamic law in the areas that it holds and wants to create an Islamic state in the mainly Muslim north. Source: Al-Jazeera

B.C. pumps $270K into Surrey’s youth gang intervention program
The Surrey school district’s youth gang intervention program is getting a $270,000 boost from the B.C. government, Premier Christy Clark announced hours after the city’s latest public shooting. Clark said the Surrey Wraparound Program has a proven track record of steering elementary and high school students away from gangs, but there are about 40 at-risk kids waiting to get in. The province promised its one-time funding injection will cut that number in half. “[Wraparound] makes such a difference for young people, but we know now that there’s a waitlist and kids who are on that waitlist have families and communities who are deeply worried that they’re going to go down the wrong track,” Clark said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon. The program is funded by the federal government, and the premier said she’s hopeful Ottawa will step up and provide the rest of the money needed to eliminate the waitlist altogether. NDP justice critic Mike Farnworth scoffed at the request, however, arguing if the province were serious about tackling Surrey’s escalating

F A I T H The Holy Prophet (SAW) has said “Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha’ban is my month and Ramadhan is the month of my followers. Whoever keeps one fast during Rajab becomes entitled to the great pleasure of Allah, the wrath of Allah remains at bay from him and a gate of hell is closed for him.”
7 Remarkable Things About Hzt Khadija(R.A),
Wife of the Prophet(saw) of Islam By: Yasmina Blackburn I often get into debates with people about women in Islam. How we dress. How we don’t dress. What we think or don’t think or should-be-thinking. I get into debates about feminism. What it is and what it isn’t. I think I’ve spawned permanent foes because I don’t care to apply the label, feminist, to describe myself. (I’m not one for labels, sorry. But if it’s even required of me, “Muslim woman” suits me just fine.) But if we could agree for a moment that there exists a pure definition of the word feminist to mean: awesomely fierce to the millionth degree, then I’d like to introduce you to Islam’s first feminist. Her name is Khadijah bint Khuwaylid. She was the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him.) And she is one of the people that I think about when I face or debate issues surrounding women today. Khadija’s existence precedes mine by more than 1,400 years; and, if I can at the very least, continuously strive to emulate her character, I will consider myself a success in life. 7 things you might not know about the awesomely fierce, Khadija (may God be pleased with her): 1. She was a successful and esteemed business woman. I would give anything to do an on-the-job, ride-along with Khadija. Gladly swipe my car for a camel- my laptop for a government-issued glass weight to measure goods in trade. What could I learn in one day of
shadowing this highly-respected business leader, trading furniture, pottery and silks? Khadija was born to a father who was a successful merchant in their Quraysh tribe of Mecca. She inherited her father’s skills in a time in history where society was maledominated and dangerous. Upon her father’s death, she took over the business and traded goods through the primary commerce centers at that time, from Mecca to Syria and to Yemen, hiring the most trustworthy men of character to brave the dangerous trade routes. Her business was larger than all of the Quraysh trades combined and the most acclaimed with a reputation of fair-dealing and high-quality goods. She had a keen eye and was highly intuitive, earning the monikers, Ameerat-Quraysh (“Princess of Quraysh”) and al-Tahira (“The Pure One”) due to her stellar reputation. Khadija knew what she was doing business-wise, never compromising her modesty or integrity to succeed in the male-dominated trades- hiring only those that could meet these standards. Glass ceiling? Hah! 1,400 years ago, yes, Khadija shattered it. 2. She turned down many marriage proposals. Being the most successful woman around, rich in worldly attainment as well as character, it seems Khadija faced a consistent campaign of men seeking her hand in marriage. She was married twice before her wedlock to the Prophet; both of these marriages produced children and both left her widowed. Her keen sense of character left her picky; and, she was less than eager to suffer anoth-
er painful loss of a husband. She resigned herself to being a widowed woman taking care of herself and her family. Until ... 3. She asked the Prophet to marry her. Love comes when you aren’t looking, or so I have heard. (And experienced.) Khadija learned of the stellar character of Muhammad as well as his experience managing caravans on the trade routes accompanying his uncle, Abu Talib. She hired him into her conglomerate. Marriages at this time were typically necessary for survival and not always about love as we know it in today’s world. Khadija didn’t need a husband to take care of her financially. And Muhammad did not have the means to seek a wife. She fell in love with him, and through a friend, asked him to marry her. (He said yes.) 4. She was 15 years older than Muhammad. If Khadija’s story hasn’t broken stereotypes about Islam yet, it might intrigue you to know that she was 40 years old when she married Muhammad. He was 25. 5. She was an ideal wife; theirs was a true love story. “Your wives are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.” (Qur’an 2:187) Taking multiple wives was a common practice, yet Khadija and Muhammad’s marriage was monogamous until her death 25 years later. Muhammad’s prophethood began during his marriage to Khadija, when he received the first of God’s revelations through the Angel Gabriel that left him frightened, strained and feeling alone when no one believed in him. Khadija comforted her husband and encouraged him during the
Sacred Months to which Almighty Allah referred in the glorious Qur’an, [of them [i.e. the twelve months] four are Sacred] (At-Tawbah 9:36). These Sacred Months are DhulQi`dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab, and all are distinguished months. The month of Rajab is considered as a prelude to the month of Ramadan, which follows after the intervening month of Sha’ban. When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sighted the moon of Rajab, he used to pray to Allah in the following words: “O Allah, make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us, and let us reach the

most difficult days of his life. She bore him 6 children. He loved no one more than Khadija during his lifetime. 6. She was the first Muslim. Khadija, the mother of Islam, was the first person on earth to accept Muhammad as the final prophet of God and accept the revelations that culminated into the Holy Qur’an. She was greeted with “Salam” (peace) by God himself as well as the Angel Gabriel. She bequeathed her worldly goods and put herself in the face of danger to stand by the Prophet Muhammad as Islam became established in the land. 7. She spent her worldly riches on the poor. In Islam, whether rich or poor, one’s financial condition is a test. Khadija gave her earnings to the poor and to the orphans, to the widows and the sick. She helped poor girls get married and provided their dowry. Khadija was one of history’s most remarkable women. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) once said that the four greatest women of mankind were: Khadija bint Khuwaylid, Fatima bint Muhammad (his youngest daughter,) Mary bint Emran (the Virgin Mary) and Asiya bint Muzahim (the wife of Pharaoh.) Khadija continues to inspire people to this day who revere her for taking great care of the Prophet of Islam and for showing the world, through her behavior, what a pious, modest and courageous woman can accomplish. The example she left for mankind remains timeles
month of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our life up to Ramadan, so that we may benefit from its merits and blessings).” Rajab is the 7th month of the Islamic calendar. The lexical definition of Rajaba is “to respect”, of which Rajab is a derivative. It’s regarded as one of the four sacred months in Islam in which battles are prohibited. The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and months begin when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted. Since the lunar year is 11 to 12 days shorter than the solar year, Rajab migrates throughout the seasons. Source: http://www.onislam.net

Fund has raised for Surrey Jameh Masjid
On Friday April 3, The Surrey Delta Branch arranged a Juma’a Food Sale in the Parking lot of Surrey Jameh Masjid, in which they served Beef and Chiken Burgers with drinks at the cost of $5 each. A large number of people participated and purchased the food to help the fundraising. BCMA Delta branch Directors and volunteers did the hard work in rain. Another fundraising event was held on April 25, After Maghrib Paryer Imam Qari Abdul Wahib delivered a short speech on building the House of Allah (Masajids) and donating generously. He recited few Quarnic Surahs and Hadiths, in which The Qur’an encourages the Muslim to donate their funds: ‘the likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain that sprouts seven spikes. In every spike there are 100 grains, and Allah multiplies for whom He will’ (2:261). Giving charity is thereby not seen as detracting from income, but rather as a multiplication in terms of spiritual observance. It is like one who sows a good grain of wheat in the field from which grows a plant on which sprout seven ears and each ear yields hundred grains. As a result, one grain was worth a total yield of 700 grains. When one spends in the way of Allah, he or she receives in return (reward in the Hereafter) on the scale of one to seven. Qari Abdul Wahab also thanked all donors who are giving continuously time to time and their physical contributions to all BCMA Masajids. Allhumdulillah by these two small efforts sonr funds have been raised for Surrey Masjid’s maintenance and regular expenses. He also requested everyone to continue their generous support to Masjids ,because these are not only for 5 times regular prayers but also for other services and many volunteers are serving day and night so, please move forward and help for House of Allah.

More aftershocks in Nepal as death toll soars
Nepal has been rocked by aftershocks as the death toll from the magnitude 7.8 quake rose to at least 4,000, as aid agencies prepared “massive” humanitarian operations. Nepal police said on their Facebook page late on Monday evening that over 3,904 deaths had been counted so far, and 7,180 more were reported injured. In addition, an avalanche caused by the earthquake killed 18 people at Mount Everest’s base camp, 61 people were killed in neighbouring India, and China reported 25 people died in Tibet. Army drone flies over battered Kathmandu Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, who is reporting from Bhaktapur, said that more people were feared dead in the ancient city, and residents were struggling to dig through the rubble with limited help from the government. He also reported sporadic fighting among residents of Bhaktapur over supplies of food, water, and tents. Al Jazeera’s Sohail Rahman, who is reporting from the capital Kathmandu, also said that “the death toll is expected to rise in the coming hours and days”, as rescuers try to reach remote villages that have been inaccessible since the quake hit. “Many thousands have been left homeless, and people are sleeping out in the open, and it’s chilly when the sun sets across the country,” he said. Meanwhile, rescue efforts have intensified
in Nepal amid a stream of foreign aid reaching the capital Kathmandu. The United Nations said it would release $15m from its central emergency response fund. The first nations to respond were Nepal’s neighbours - India, China, and Pakistan, all of which have been jockeying for influence over the landlocked nation. Nepal remains closest to India, with which it shares deep political, cultural and religious ties. Military cargo planes from India and Pakistan have landed at Kathmandu airport, which has been struggling to handle the volume of cargo and civilian planes flying in. “Kathmandu has a very small airport, therefore they are making a priority that military aircraft with rescue personnel are allowed first. Also they are trying to get in NGOs,” Al Jazeera’s Rahman said. “India and Pakistan are coming to the forefront, as they have a lot of experience in this sort of catastrophe. “I saw military aircraft from China, Japan as well as Sri Lanka.” Base camp avalanche The magnitude 7.8 quake also touched off an avalanche at the base camp of Mount Everest in which at least 17 people were killed. Nepal cremates hundreds of unknown quake victims Scores of people are still stuck in the mountains and a rescue operation is under way to lift them from the frozen frontiers.
Other countries involved in aid efforts are UAE, Israel, the US and members of the European Union. They have sent or pledged money or supplies - including medicines, a mobile hospital and rescue teams. The sick and wounded were lying out in the open in Kathmandu, unable to find beds in the devastated city’s hospitals. Surgeons set up an operating theatre inside a tent on the grounds of Kathmandu Medical College. “We are overwhelmed with rescue and assistance requests from all across the country,”
said Deepak Panda, a member of the country’s disaster management. Most shops in Kathmandu, where more than 1,000 people have died, were closed after the government declared a weeklong period of recovery. Anurag Acharya, a Kathmandu-based journalist, said that “people are furious and not allowing journalists in the devastated area [Durbar Square]”. “Kathmandu’s heritage buildings are almost completely lost,” he told Al Jazeera.

14 I M M I G R A T I O N Immigration scam warning Marriage Fraud to get issued by Abbotsford police Canadian Immigration Rajab 11, 1436 May 1, 2015
Police warn people that scammers can make telephone calls appear to come from legitmate agencies Dan Williams, a spokesman with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, warned that using prepaid cards in much like sending cash, and as soon as you give the code on the back to somebody, they can access the cash within minutes. “There is no reason why you’d be paying with prepaid card to a stranger. If someone’s steering you towards prepaid cards, there’s a 99.9 per cent chance it’s a scam, especially if they are presenting themselves to be a government agency or institution,” he said. (CBC) Police in Abbotsford, B.C., are warning people to beware of telephone and e-mail scams demanding money from apparently legitimate agencies. Yesterday, a man was robbed of $1,900 by a fraudster claiming to be calling from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The caller demanded the victim pay $4,280 within the next seven hours or face immediate deportation. The conversation took place in both English and Punjabi, say police. The victim checked caller ID and the number “appeared” to be legitimate so he went out and bought several pre-loaded credit cards as instructed by the scammer. After the victim called the scammer back to give them the credit card information the scammer demanded the victim pay the remaining amount immediately. That’s when an employee at the business
that was selling the cards became suspicious and called police, who contacted the victim and determined he had lost his cash to the scammer. Const. Ian MacDonald warns fraudsters are able to “spoof” telephone numbers to make it look like they are calling from legitimate government agencies. MacDonald says people have to be suspicious and says no legitimate agency would ever call or send an e-mail demanding money right away. Similar versions of the scam have included callers claiming to be from utility companies such as BC Hydro or Revenue Canada, and demanding immediate payments by pre-paid credit cards. The pre-paid cards are demanded by the scammers because as soon as you give the code on the back to somebody, they can access the cash within minutes. Source CBC
I would like to share my story, which have been proven in the Court. I got married in 2010. It was a big ceremony in our family as I am the only son after six daughters. I went to Pakistan from Canada along with my mother and dad for my marriage. I stayed with my wife for six months after marriage, but she did not allowed me to consummate my marriage and kept on saying to hold on until we go to Canada, then we shall have kids. I believed her words, and upon my arrival in Canada I sent her sponsorship application to Canadian Immigration Authorities. During the period of application processing, my family took care of her in Pakistan. They arranged for English Classes, driving training and sewing lessons, to get her ready for Canadian Living in Pakistan. I kept on sending all the expenses for her living in Pakistan. My wife got visa and landed in Canada on May 3, 2013 and moved to my family house in Canada. I took her different places with me for sight seeing, family invitations, parties, fairs, shopping centers. Her PR Card arrived approx 3 months after landing, then 2 weeks later health care and SIN Cards. When she got all the ID’s in hand as per plan she made allegations through her brother in England to the Police that she had been assaulted and had been treated badly by me and my family since she had arrived. The police assisted her leaving the home. She had already packed her belongings including cash, Jewelery that she had received as gifts from my family prior to contacting police. As a result of the allegations, I was charged with two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm to her. A trial was held and I was found not guilty on all 3 counts by the Honorable Court. She also had made application in the Supreme Court for spousal support and division of property. These claims were dismissed by The Supreme Court of British Columbia. I also came to know, she has a friend who came to Canada, and made similar allegations on her husband in similar incident. It seems that there is a pattern of deceit to gain entry into Canada.
It is obvious that my wife married me for the express purpose of coming to Canada and left me as soon as she had obtained the necessary documentation making false allegations against me. As I am devastated by my wife’s action as I believed it was a genuine relationship and has since realized that she only used me to obtain permanent residence in Canada. I want to express the authorities to take action in such false cases, which has damaged me and my whole family in physically, mentally and financial losses. I ask the authorities that there is no law in Canada to take action on false allegations. If she wanted the divorce only, she would have asked for divorce only, why I had been put in Police custody, mentally and physically, financial losses and stress on false allegations. How the authorities can help me to recover. Spouses know that in Canada there is no law to take action on false allegations, that’s why every day there are similar cases go to Police, Courts, and Government spent a huge tax-payers money, and after that all the expenses are charged from the poor and victimized spouses who sponsor them. Actually all these expense should be charged from the sponsored persons, who make false allegations to their spouces. Finally, I would like to inform everyone wants to get married from their home countries, please make sure, it is a genuine marriage and you are not setting your foot into trap. Thank you,
Muhammad Rashad Hassan, Victoria, BC, Canada
Beware of Phone scams from callers posing as government officials Miracle Media Editor in-chief have come to know of phone calls which have been disturbing people for many months. The unknown callers identified themselves as calling from Canada Revenue Agency and claiming your Tax return was not properly filed last year. You now owe thousands of dollars to CRA amount and if you will not pay right now on phone you have to face criminal charges. Your case will be forwarded to the RCMP. Some receiving the call became victims and gave more infor mation and even credit card number. Others were able to identify the scam and hang up.
>>
Here is what one person told us: A Few days ago, I got a call at 8:30 am. at one morning while I was sleeping. The caller said, “I am calling from Canadian Embassy. Are you Mr. X”. “Yes”, I said. He said,” Canadian Embassy is going to deport you. You did not register your Citizenship number, that’s why they are deporting you.”I was suspicious since having a Canadian Embassy call you in Canada make no sense.s I said, “I am having Canadian citizenship for more than 15 years, what type of registration are you
talking about? Send me in writing.” He said, “no you will shortly receive a notice of your deportation from Canada.” I took down hours name and phone number and asked him to hang up and I will call him back. I tried calling back that number, but the number did not go through.” So beware everyone, there is no way that CRA or any Embassy or goverment agency will threaten you on phone directly and ask for payment over phone. If you receive such type of call, don’t divulge more information and report it to the authorities immediately.

MIRACLE
SPECIAL
Community Profile: Mr. M. Z. Khan of Vancouver.
From time to time, The Miracle publishes interviews with politicians, entrepreneurs, artists and other community leaders in an effort to acknowledge their service to the community. Recently, we had the opportunity to interview one of the founding members of many associations in Vancouver, Mr. M. Z. Khan of Vancouver. The Miracle (TM): You are famous by your short name. M.Z. Khan, what is your full name. For the benefit of our readers tell us about yourself, when and where you were born and what is your educational background? M. Z. Khan: My full name is Mohammed Zainul Abideen Khan. I was born in Karad (District of Maharashtra), India in 1929 and moved in Pakistan in 1948. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Karachi, Pakistan and a M.S. Degree from the University of Minnesota, USA. TM: When did you emigrate to Canada and in which city, what was the criteria of immigration in those days? Mr. Khan: When I immigrated to Canada, there were hardly a few Muslims residing in Vancouver or Surrey. In these days, immigrants were welcome in Canada and BC and only had to report once they came to BC. There were hardly any restrictions for immigrants coming in. I came to BC firstly in 1958 and stayed here until 1960 and went back to India to visit my parents and the family. TM: Tell us about your family members and what they are doing? Mr. Khan: I am very fortunate that I have such a loving and supportive family. I have a son and daughter and both are married and are doing well. My wife has been teaching Urdu in a community school as a volunteer for years. TM: What were the biggest challenges facing the Muslim community when you first came to BC? Mr. Khan: There were only a few Muslims at that time in BC. It was hard to get employment due to subtle discrimination. Living conditions were good as long as you had employment. The Government provided you with a small allowance to get by until you found work. There was a small Muslim community in Vancouver then. The weather was not good especially in the winter and it took some time to get used to this weather.
By: A Azhar h S Syed, d Richmond i h d It was the year 1974. We were living in Vancouver on 10th Avenue, a block west of Nanaimo Street. The phone rang on a Saturday morning and I took the call. It was my friend, Khaleel Chisti, who said that he was coming over with a visitor. I said, welcome. Half an hour later he came and with him was Br. Aziz Khan. We met and exchanged our views and thoughts on various topics. He met my family and told us that he has children of the same age. That meeting became the foundation of our relationship with the Khan family. A few days later he called and invited us for dinner. They were living on McKinnon and Rupert in Vancouver. Knowing that I did not have car, he said he would pick us up. These family gatherings continued. My eldest daughter, Mahwash and his daughters, Naseem and Mehmoona, became close friends and sisters. My son, Zafar and his son Arif, also became close friends. Imran, being of the same age, would join too. The girls though, became closer to each other than the boys. They would shop together and would plan their activities together. Br. Farooq Elesseily, who was then the BC Representative of ISNA, informed us about a two-week youth camp for boys and girls
TM: What challenges did face when you first arrived in Canada such as living conditions, food, weather and employment? Are there any interesting incident that happened with you or your family in Canada? Mr. Khan: Living conditions were okay, but our type of foods and spices were not readily available as they are now. We had to prepare all our own food. It was hardly available in the markets, but conditions improved gradually with the arrival of new qualified immigrants from South Asia. TM: Did you study in Canada and why did you choose this civil engineer career? Mr. Khan: I came back to North America in the early 1960s to Minnesota and got admission to the University of Minnesota in Civil Engineering. I chose an M.S. Degree in Structural Engineering and I already had a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) from the N.E.D. University in Karachi. I then worked as an engineer in Wapda, Lahore and then in various firms in the U.S. and Canada. TM: When and how you did you start your engineering services / engineers construction & civil / engineers structural civil engineering under M Z Khan Engineering Ltd Joyce street Vancouver in BC, how did people respond to you ? Mr. Khan: I started my firm in the early 1970s because it was hard to get a job. Early response was not good but improved with the passage of time. When I married my wife, Asifa, my business started running well. TM: Tell us about a little your engineering projects? Besides residential and commercial, did you work on government projects as well? Mr. Khan: I have worked on structural projects in BC and Alberta as I was registered in both these provinces. I have done work in both residential and commercial projects. Some notable projects I designed are the Richmond Mosque, Bear Creek Hall in Surrey, Lali Karan Hall in Vancouver, Capilano Motel in North Vancouver, Burrard Thermal Project in Port Moody. I also worked on several jobs and Motels on Kingsway in Vancouver and North Vancouver and several projects both large and small in BC and Alberta. I have also done a little work on Government projects. TM: Is your firm still operating? If so, are you or your family members still involved in its operations?
Mr. Khan: I have now retired from my civil engineering business and just manage the apartments in my building at 4946 Joyce Street. My son is looking after this building. TM: Now let’s discuss your community service, you worked hard as a volunteer in many organizations including the BC Muslim Association. When and what was your role in B.C. Muslim Association over the years? Mr. Khan: And I am one of the main founding members of the BC Muslim Association and was the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of the Association when we drafted the uniform constitution for this association. This was approved in the general meeting of the association. The Richmond Mosque was constructed under my design, supervision and chairmanship and was opened on July 7, 1983. I also worked on the establishment of the first Mosque in Vancouver on West 8th Avenue which was opened as an Islamic Centre and then approved as a Mosque by the general body subsequently. My role in the BC Muslim Association over the years has been to render advice and work whenever my services are required. TM: You were also involved in Pakistan Canada Association (PCA), tell our readers about your contribution there. Mr. Khan: I am one of the founding members of the Pakistan Canada Association and worked on the draft constitution and other matters affecting the community. TM: You were also founding member of Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association (PCCA), why did you feel there was a need to make another Pakistani association at the time? Mr. Khan: I also provide an advisory role to the Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association (PCCA); this association was formed because the Pakistan Canada Association was not fully satisfying the needs of the Pakistani community and is controlled by a handful of members with no regard for the betterment of the community. TM: Any other volunteer works, on radio or other professional works you done in your life? Mr. Khan: I had my own TV program, Aap Ki Mehfil and Guldasta, which ran for almost six years. I discontinued this program due to lack of time and not obtaining suitable staff to run this program. I wanted to do a lot of work on this item, but was also

in New Orleans. It sounded very interesting. Four youth, two boys and two girls, Mehmoona, Mahwash, Zafar and Chisti went and benefitted greatly from that memorable trip. Our relationship with the Khan family can be taken as an example of the Brotherhood and Sisterhood that is part of our religion. Still today, after 40 years, there is no change. Zafar does not live here but whenever he visits, he makes it a point to visit his Aziz Uncle. In those visits Zafar would update his Uncle about his life and his family. When Zafar was in Hawaii, he invited some families to visit him. Br. Aziz and St. Mehrun were the first to plan their vacation. Though he was senior to me, he always called me Azhar Bhai and I addressed him as Khan Saheb. That was our mutual respect. At a meeting with Chisti, we decided to start a family study circle. The families in mind were Khan Saheb’s family and ours. Chisti, being recently married, had a baby. We discussed this with Khan Saheb and he happily agreed to the plan. We brought resource material from Toronto, and Chisti prepared a plan to study Qur’an and Islamic
Studies. On every Wednesday evening we would gather at Chisti’s house in Richmond for two hours to study our Deen. Br. Habib Khan and his wife also joined us. We planned a long weekend youth camp in Squamish at a great campsite. Every thing was in place, the youth were excited and so were the parents. Br. Aziz Khan was in the management committee and took full responsibility to look after the kitchen and the dinning hall. He was there with his team, preparing for the first dinner, before we got there. All meals were served on time with full satisfaction of the youth. That was a great help. The camp was a success. Khan Saheb continued to help us for quite some time in cooking for our regular youth programs in the Richmond Masjid. On a request from the President of BCMA to plan an event to promote the newly inaugurated Richmond Masjid, a weekend conference was organized. There were two dinners and one lunch to be served. Again Br. Aziz Khan took charge and organized the meals. The best part was that once he would take charge, then you would not think about it. He would manage everything very profes-
restricted due to my age. I also wanted to further improve the TV program, but all this required financial support and suitable staff not available at that time to handle this program. TM: While you have had a successful career and done a lot of service for the community, is there anything you wish you had been able to do but were never able to? Mr. Khan: time but as you know it is not easy to obtain proper cooperation when dealing with the community in general. TM: As a prominent member of the Muslim community, what is your opinion on the common labels being placed on Muslims, such as “terrorist”, “fundamentalist”, “extremist”? Mr. Khan: The labels placed on Muslims such as “terrorists”, etc., are due to a lack of knowledge and misunderstanding of the Muslim faith. Muslims are mostly peace loving, understanding, and hardworking and work for the betterment of the community as a whole. TM: What advice would you give to the Muslim community in BC? Mr. Khan: The Muslim community leaders should render constructive advice and guidance to work with the community for their betterment. TM: Do you have any message for our Miracle readers? Mr. Khan: Miracle readers should give constructive guidelines and topics of interest to the community and problem areas to the paper so that they can be properly addressed. Your paper is a great source of communication for the community; keep up the good job. sionally. i ll At one of our meetings, we decided to forman association to promote Urdu Language in Canada. Keeping in mind Khan Saheb’s interest in art and literature, we briefed d him and very happily he agreed to be partt of it. Recently, Br. Hafiz Qadri compiled d and published the history of Urdu in BC, and Aziz Khan’s name is there as one of the founders of the Canada Urdu Association. In all my years of work with BCMA, I have not met any one so sincere, so dedicated and d so faithful to the Association and the community as was Br. Aziz Khan. He wouldd never want to hear anything negative aboutt the Association. He would not only defend d BCMA projects, I found him always proudd to be a member of the Association. Br. Aziz Khan was a happy, loving husband, a proudd father and grandfather, a sincere friend and d community worker. The family lost an icon and the community lost a pillar. We will always remember him. To Allah we belong and to Him we return.

I Believe in Myself! By:Rahma Khan Today’s topic is on believing in yourself. So why should I believe in myself? I’m too short, I’m too fat, I’m too skinny, I don’t get good grades in school and I don’t do well there either! What’s the point? Now I’ll tell you. We were created for a reason, and we were created with the love of Allah(SWT). If Allah(SWT) did not put in so much effort in making us as unique as we are today, Alhamdulillah, then why are
Violence at Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran evokes tremendous response
we here right now? Whether or not people care about you, you have to keep in mind that you are here for a reason. And that reason is that Allah(SWT) agrees that you are worthy of being tested, and he knows you’re a good Muslim, deep inside the heart. And He always will, Insha Allah. Allah (SWT) said in the Quran: Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?”
Safety in Cyberspace
By: Fatima Nadeem Grade 7 Learn about Ancient Greece, read up on your favorite Hollywood star, or study for a test. You can do all these things online and then email or text message your best friend about it. But when you’re moving through cyberspace, you need to stay safe. Tip # 1: Don’t communicate with strangers online and never agree to meet in person. #2: Tell a parent or another adult if a stranger contacts you in a chat room or through email or text messaging. And Tip 3 is don’t enter contests, join clubs, or share your personal information for any reason, unless your mom or dad says it’s OK. Personal information includes your name, address, age, phone number, birthday, email address, where you go to school, and other facts about you. Since you were a little kid, your mom or dad has probably told you not to talk to strangers. The same goes for the online world. It’s easy to meet a stranger on the Internet. You might visit a chat room or get an email or text message from someone you don’t know. It can be fun to make new friends, but do not communicate with strangers you meet online. Don’t talk to them, agree to phone them, or email them photos of yourself. To a kid, this can seem kind of silly. Why not make a friend with someone who likes skateboarding just as much as you do? The writer might seemed really nice and tell you how you sound really smart. Unfortunately, kids have been tricked online by people who pretend to be something that they’re not. Someone might lie and say they’re in seventh grade, too, when they’re really all grown up. Some kids have found themselves in a dangerous situation when
Outreach Program against Drugs and
they agreed to meet the mysterious online “friend” in person. Let your parents know if a stranger emails you, sends a text message, or starts a conversation with you in a chat room. A grown-up should decide what’s best to do, which may include changing your email address. Anybody who uses the Internet has been asked to sign in, log in, or create a personal profile. Kids need to check with a parent or grown-up before doing so. Why? This information could be used for reasons you wouldn’t like, like getting a lot of junk email. Another word about email: If you have your own account, let your mom or dad know before you reply to email that asks for your personal information. Some email looks official, as if it was sent by your Internet provider, but it’s actually a trick to get your personal info. Another way to keep your privacy is to choose a screen name or email account name that isn’t your real name. For instance, instead of “Muhammad Ibrahim” why not choose “Sk8boardKing21”? Only your friends and family will know your code name!
THE
6 April, An Outreach Program, themed ‘Protecting Peace and Preventing Drug Violence’, against Drugs and Violence in Surrey was organized at Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib in Surrey today. Hundreds joined to listen to powerful speakers and deliberate about the issue. The recent shootings in Surrey have shaken the Surrey community and the Gurdwara feels responsible to proactively engage with the public in stopping this senseless violence. It is a campaign to educate our community about the dangers of exposure to drugs and to encourage them to take action to protect them. The emphasis of the program was to discuss and to find solutions to prevent intervene and suppress drugs and violence in the community. Eloquent Speakers from all walks of the community presented their perspective about the drug violence in Surrey. Detective Jag Khosa of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit-British Columbia shared his experiences of dealing with those involved in the drug violence. He laid emphasis on the fact that there is a ‘code of silence’ among South Asian families when it comes to acceptance that one’s known is involved in drugs related crime. He stressed that “This culture needs to change”. The community should become more candid in addressing the issue before the situation becomes worse. Constable Sanj Sidhu shared his experience of being the first responder in scenarios when he saw someone die in the drug related violence. The role of giving more than enough value to earning money by parents than spending time with their children was one of
the causes that led to the becoming of a drug gangster. He urged to all those who were present and beyond, “please spend more time with your children”. Dr. Gira Bhatt, Psychology Professor of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, mentioned how young people are lured into gang violence. She shared from her experience of executing a gang violence related research that how a mother was relieved to know that her son would be going to jail, hence not get killed on the streets. “What kind of scenario it is to be caught into?” she questioned. The most heart wrenching questions were asked by Eileen Mohan, a mother who lost her son in the gang violence, for no fault of his. She warned those who were involved in such violence that the community will not tolerate such acts and that all violence should be shed away. Other speakers, such as Mufti Asim Rashid and Moe Bhatha echoed the same thoughts and strongly urged to the community that the community can and should work towards a solution to get rid of such violence. Harpreet Singh, Conservative Party Candidate in Surrey Newton informed the gathering of the tough laws introduced by the Conservative government and asked the public to support the laws so that the community could be made safer. The leadership taken by Giani Narinder Singh of Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Harpreet Singh ,Global Girl Power and Gur Sobha Foundation was complimented for their efforts in organizing the solution oriented discussion forum to get rid of the gang violence among the community.

Why is our Young Generation not interested in getting married? This is a very common social problem of our society. Parents are worried about their children’s interest in married life. What are the reasons behind this hesitation, are they answerable to their parents? Are parents responsible for that?

Antioxidants: 5 Super Food Sources
By Nada Adam Thank you to you all who gave me feedback, questions, comments and concerns! In last article that discussed certain foods that cause inflammation which accelerates aging, due to space limitation I wanted to provide solutions in subsequent article. So what’s the solution? You must increase your antioxidant foods in every meal to offset potential free radicals. A dear friend after reading the article asked me “if we can’t eat these foods then what are we supposed to eat during the day?” A great question indeed that I’m sure a lot of you thought of. The following is a sample day menu to consider: Breakfast: 1-2 organic free range eggs soft boiled with 1 slice of toast (Silverhills brand), a bit of yogurt cheese spread on the toast, drizzle 1 tsp virgin olive oil and Celtic sea salt. Yes it’s also safe to eat eggs everyday even if you have a cholesterol problem. If you keep the yoke from being fully cooked your body will use the liveenzymes still left in it to digest it. I also alternate with steel cut oats (that take longer to cook) because fast oats have already lost most of their nutrients from the processing, sweetened with real unpasteurized honey or Stevia, topped with blueberries, walnuts and a dash of Creamo. Very yummy! Lunch: Homemade Quinoa salad! Ingredients: Chopped Parsley, red pepper, cucum-
ber, carrots, with dry mint. Stir in cooked/ cooled Quinoa. Dressing: Apple cider vinegar, Celtic sea salt and Virgin olive oil. Enjoy this salad for any meal – its filling and quinoa is high in protein and very low in carbs therefore great for losing weight! Dinner: Homemade Chicken, Beef Steak or Lamb (no pre-made/ready-made, battered, fried or processed meats) – Marinate overnight with balsamic vinegar, oregano, granulated garlic and Celtic sea salt. Bake chicken with skin on with sweet potato or squash, whole cloves garlic and chopped onion. When done, drizzle on top – fresh (uncooked) olive oil or organic coconut oil on your food. Serve with a salad if you wish. (Avoid bread and rice at dinner time) Before Bed Snack: Organic Apples are awesome for alleviating heart burn problems. Make this delicious food/snack your natural medicine. It also aids in the performance of your liver while you sleep. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” ~ certainly truth to that saying.... The following list is an example of antioxidants that are not manufactured by the body so you need to eat such nutrients for optimum health. Those include: Selenium and vitamins E, C, and beta-carotene (the safe form for Vitamin A). Today our environment is more toxic than it was 100 years ago and if you pride yourself on doing lots of exercise regularly, you increase the potential for oxidative stress (Free Radicals) therefore you need even more antioxidants up to 50,000 units. Antioxidants are measured as ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). The best 5 high ORAC food types are best eaten fresh from organic sources. Chocolate/Coffee: Yes, they both made the list for high ORAC!! Chocolate should be
of course unprocessed, dark and high in cacao content at least 70% (avoid the milk chocolate version). Cacao has an astounding ORAC over 50K per 100 grams while Coffee is 15K-18K ORAC. Berries: Himalayan Goji berry (ORAC 25K) and tropical Acai berries (ORAC 18K) rank highest. Blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, raspberries, pomegranates, and strawberries have high ORAC ratings too. Cherries and apples are top ORAC providers also. Deeper colors indi-
cate richer antioxidant bioflavonoid content. Dried fruits rank high as well such as Raisins (10K) and Prunes (8K) ORAC Nuts/Grains: Pecans rank the highest at 18K ORAC, with walnuts and almonds following right behind. Steel cut oats are high in antioxidants along with quinoa and whole grains. Veggies: Cooked veggies especially Spinach, Kale, and Broccoli and Artichokes are at 9K-10K ORAC. Beans: Black beans and kidney beans are the highest ORAC. They are best bought dry bulk organic, soaked overnight and cooked the next day. Legumes are also great for balancing blood sugar and providing a good deal of fiber to aid your digestion. Remember you want to consume an ORAC that totals about 50K a day to minimize the free radical damage. So do your best to consume foods consciously that will total that number every single day. I hope I have satisfied your questions and provided you with answers to help you feel better knowing you’re on the road to combating free radicals that will reduce your inflammation. Mother’s Day (May 10): Journey of Life! Islamic Prespective
Mother’s Day in Canada is observed each year on the second Sunday in May. It is not an official public or statutory holiday. Canadians have family reunions on this day to honour their mothers and celebrate motherhood. Canadians also celebrate Father’s Day. The date of Father’s Day in Canada is on the third Sunday in June. Yet, the Mother’s Day, as it’s known nowadays is a Western habit. The Westerners specified a day and called it the Mother’s Day. On that day sons and daughters show gratefulness to their mothers and offer them presents. It has become part of important feasts in the West, whereas we Muslims have no other festivals except the Lesser and the Greater Bairams. Any other celebrations are deemed mere occasions or anniversaries; and this is applied to the Mother’s Day. The Mother’s Day implies paying more attention and exerting more effort in expressing gratitude to mothers. So there is nothing wrong in that. However, there are two reservations worth mentioning; first, considering the Mother’s Day a feast; second, confining the task of showing dutifulness to mothers to that specific day, giving implication that throughout the whole year, just only one day is for showing love to parents. If such two anomalous points are addressed, then there is nothing wrong in considering the Mother’s Day a chance to give more care to mothers. Thus, we may take the Mother’s Day as a chance to lay more emphasis on our duty towards our mothers, as Islam enjoins us, because dutifulness to parents is a genuine Islamic teaching. But Muslims, in doing that, should never deviate from the Islamic teachings, they should do things in Islamic manners, not in Western manners. Hence, they would not be imitating the non-Islamic habits of the West. Hence, viewed in juristic perspective, we can say that celebrating the Mother’s day is controversial among the contemporary scholars. While a group of them consider it haram (unlawful) as a kind of blind imitation of the Western non-Islamic habits, which have no benefit for Muslims, another group see it halal(lawful) on condition that showing gratitude and dutifulness to parents should not be confined to that day only. Moreover, the well known erudite scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi states:
The Arab tend to blindly follow the Western in their celebration of the Mother’s Day, without trying to understand the wisdom behind inventing such an occasion. When the European found that children do not deal properly towards their parents nor give them their due right, they resorted to specifying an annual occasion for children to remedy the situation. But in Islam, mothers are to be given due respect and love every time, not only one day a year. For example, when one goes out, he kisses one’s mother’s hand seeking her pleasure and blessing. A Muslim must not allow any gap between him and his mother, he must offer her presents every time. This indicates that Muslims can dispense with such an occasion, the Mother’s Day. Unlike the case in the West, where it’s a vogue for some children to show indifference to their mothers’ feelings, and, what’s more, it is so common to see some parents being dragged to infirmaries (as their kids have no time for them), dutifulness to parents in Islam, alongside with worshipping Allah, is a sacred duty. In this concern, Almighty Allah says: (And We have commended unto man kindness toward parents. His mother beareth him with reluctance, and bringeth him forth with reluctance, and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months, till, when he attaineth full strength and reacheth forty years, he saith: My Lord! Arouse me that I may give thanks for the favor wherewith Thou hast favored me and my parents, and that I may do right acceptable unto Thee. And be gracious unto me In the matter of my seed. Lo! I have turned unto Thee repentant, and lo! I am of those who surrender (unto Thee).) (Al-Ahqaf 46: 15) Reflecting on the aforementioned Qur’anic verse, we find it stressing both parents’ right, but reviewing the following verses we find them paying special care to the mother and tackling the hardships she suffers in pregnancy, fosterage and rearing children. In this verse, Almighty Allah informs man of the debt he owes his mother since he was a fetus, passing by the process of childbirth, infancy, childhood until he comes of age. A child normally forgets the hardship which his mother underwent during pregnancy. Hence Almighty Allah draws his attention to such hardships, laying emphasis on her great status in Islam.
Major Decisions: How to Choose The Right Career for You
By Meghan Belnap Choosing the right career can be one of the most daunting and challenging decisions to make in life. Obtaining the right skills set and knowledge base for a job can seem overwhelming for a lot of folks who essentially want to make sure they are making the right decision. It is without a doubt that that choosing a career path can have long-term ramifications. A career choice can set the tone for one’s future earnings, which inevitably translate into one’s quality of life. Finding a career of your dreams requires a lot of hard work, patience and discipline. However, this hard work will pay off in the long run. How often do you hear of people who work jobs that they absolutely hate and yet do it only to take care of their families? Do you see yourself in
By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Grief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or some other loss, the stages of grieving are the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person MUST go through the five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. But, as stressed, ALL five stages must be completed for healing to occur. The five stages of grief are: 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving. 3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing and praying for them to come
back. 4-Depressionoverwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, self-pity, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Here is a quick guide to finding the right career for those who are at a standstill and are ready to make some serious career moves this year. What Are Your Passions? Identifying a number of passions and dreams in life is one of the first steps individuals must take in order to get a more concise understanding of what type of career they want. Do you want to travel more? Do you have a passion of working with children? Would you like to learn and use a foreign language? Family Doctor’s Medical Clinic 7347 120th Street Delta, B.C. off by creating a list of passions and wants in life and find careers or jobs that closely align with those passions. Make sure these passions are well thought out and actually have a degree of realism. Make a List of Career Options Once you have your list of possible career options, the next thing individuals should do is define each career and its possible job routes, education requirements and salaries. Take for instance, if someone is interested in studying dentistry or anything related to dental health, researching possible schools would help them further define degree programs, certifications and licensing requirements necessary for that career. Prioritize this list based on which careers mostly align with passions and interests. Research School Options Once individuals have an idea of all of the schools they would like to explore, further refine and list should be very well-detailed
and include things like entrance requirements, time to complete the degree, tuition, study expenses and financial aid options. Once due diligence on these schools is completed, prioritize this list . Take Action Once individuals have a fully developed list of schools and or education programs necessary for their future career, it’s time to take action. Talk to an academic adviser about their programs. Ask as many questions as possible and get an understanding of how the program can be of benefit. Also, talk to a financial aid counselor about options and see which program is most financially feasible. Also, realize that getting into a new career takes time, patience, diligence and discipline. Success will not come overnight and to an extent, it might be frustrating. However, with consistent handwork and belief in yourself, individuals will be able to get into a career of their dreams.

Canucks feel aging core can still compete
Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin was the first to admit he isn’t getting any younger, but after an early exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs he expects Vancouver is going to. Facing questions about an aging core that is 3-12 in the playoffs since reaching Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, Henrik and Daniel Sedin stressed the importance of a continued influx of youth next season. But neither was ready to entertain a rebuild, not after bouncing back from missing the playoffs last year to finish second in the Pacific Division this season. Daniel and Henrik turn 35 shortly before next season starts, the elder statesmen of nine players left over from a 2011 playoff run that ended with a Game 7 loss to theBoston Bruins in the Finals. That list includes linemate Alexandre Burrows, who turned 34 earlier this month, and veteran defensemen Kevin Bieksa, who turns 34 this summer, and Dan Hamhuis, 32. Forward Chris Higgins will be 32 this summer, and the youngest holdovers from the 2011 run, forward Jannik Hansen and
defenseman Alexander Edler, will both be 30 before the end of next season. Like the Sedin’s, most of the veteran forwards bounced back after struggling under coach John Tortorella last season. After finishing with their lowest point totals in a decade, the Sedin’s were rejuvenated under new coach Willie Desjardins, with Daniel finishing ninth in NHL scoring with 76 points and Henrik 13th with 73. The Canucks took a step back in the playoffs, however. The offense dried up again, and losing in six games to the Calgary Flames has some wondering if Tortorella was right when he called the core “old” and “stale” before being fired last summer. Vancouver only scored four goals in its first three losses to Calgary, and then blew an early 3-0 lead and a 4-3 advantage in the third period of a season-ending 7-4 loss in Game 6 on Saturday. Instead of preparing to host Game 7 on Monday, Canucks players cleaned out their lockers, met with management and answered questions about whether the incumbents are still good enough. Bieksa
wasn’t the only one to point to Bo Horvat, a rookie center who turned 20 late in the season, as an example of getting younger and better at the same time. After proving himself defensively in the first half, Horvat scored 10 of his 13 goals and 16 of 24 points after the All-Star Break, and tied for the playoff lead with four points. Not that every prospect will be ready as fast as Horvat, who was selected ninth in the 2013 NHL Draft with a pick the Canucks got in a trade that sent goaltender Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils. Vancouver also has forward Jake Virtanen, who was picked sixth in the 2014 draft after they finished 25th in the NHL last season, but the rest of their prospects are from deeper in the draft. And as long as they keep making the playoffs, there won’t be any more top-10 picks like Horvat in the system anytime soon. Vancouver also has to find room on the roster for younger players. All nine holdovers from 2011 all have no-trade clauses in their contracts. New general manager Jim Benning convinced defenseman Ja-
son Garrison to waive his no-trade clause last summer, but neither Bieksa or Hamhuis, who each have one more season remaining on their current contracts, expressed interest in doing the same, making it hard to change a defense that looked slow against Calgary. Among the forwards, left wing Shawn Matthias appears poised to test the market as an unrestricted free agent after a career-high 18 goals this season. Center Brad Richardson, who needs surgery to repair ligament and tendon damage around a fractured ankle that kept him out of 37 of the final 39 regular-season games and Game 4 of the playoffs, could also depart as a free agent. Burrows, who missed the final three games against the Flames with “fractured and dislocated rib cartilage”, said the remaining veterans are going to be just as important off the ice if the team keeps getting younger. The Canucks hope it will be further into the playoffs than the current group has been able to take them for the past four seasons. Source: NHL.com
KHULNA: Opener Mohammad Hafeez hit an unbeaten century as Pakistan reached 227 for one in reply to Bangladesh’s 332 at stumps on the second day of the first Test in Khulna on Wednesday. The tourists finally enjoyed a successful day on an otherwise miserable tour, where they were whitewashed 3-0 in the one-day series and lost to Bangladesh for the first time in a Twenty20 international. Hafeez made 137 not out, his eighth Test hundred and the third in his last four innings, after Pakistan had ended Bangladesh’s hopes of posting a mammoth first innings total. Hafeez has so far hit 12 fours and two sixes after surviving a narrow escape in the fourth over of the innings when Third umpire Paul Reiffel overturned a decision for a catch at the wicket off Taijul Islam. Hafeez put on 50 for the first-wicket with debutant Sami Aslam and 177 in an unbroken partnership with Azhar Ali, as the batsmen prospered at
the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium. Left-handed Aslam, who captained Pakistan’s under-19 team before making the grade at senior level, was caught down the legside by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim off Taijul. Azhar survived two dropped catches by Rahim to remain unbeaten at stumps on 65, reaching his half-century with a six off Shakib Al Hasan. Pakistan’s spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed praised Hafeez, saying it was not easy to score runs on the slow pitch. “Hafeez really batted well and showed his class,” Mushtaq said. “It was awesome the way he played on what is a slow wicket where it’s not easy to go for shots. “We will obviously aim for a big total to put Bangladesh under pressure.” The hosts suffered a blow when Rahim was forced to leave the field after tea with a bruised finger, leaving Imrul Kayes to don the gloves as Tamim Iqbal took over the captaincy.
Bangladesh, who resumed on the overnight score of 236-4, were dismissed for 332 soon after lunch. Left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz and leg-spinner Yasir Shah claimed three wickets each, while Hafeez and Zulfiqar Babar took two each. Yasir grabbed two of the four wickets that fell in the morning session as Bangladesh faltered against steady spin bowling by the Pakistanis. The hosts lost the early wicket of star allrounder Shakib, who was smartly caught at leg-slip by Asad Shafiq off Babar for 25. Rahim (32) and Soumya Sarkar (33) put on 62 for the sixth wicket before Pakistan hit back with three wickets in the space of seven runs. Sarkar was dismissed by another good catch by Asad in the covers off Hafeez before Yasir had Rahim caught in the covers and bowled Taijul round his legs. Wahab returned after lunch to remove Mohammad Shahid and last man Rubel Hossain
quickly, leaving Shuvagata Hom unbeaten on 12. Bangladesh had prospered on the opening day through Mominul Haque, who top-scored with 80, and useful contributions from opener Kayes (51) and Mohammad Mahmudullah (49). Sarkar admitted bad batting by the lower order had allowed Pakistan to dominate the day’s play. “I think we batted badly today as compared to yesterday,” he said. “Pakistan bowled well but we put ourselves under pressure by not being able to score more runs.” The second and final Test of the short series will start at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka on May 6.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leaders and former Prime Ministers (PM) Yousaf Raza Gillani and Pervez Ashraf’s press conference in Peshawar proved to be a chaotic event on Tuesday when the workers started criticizing the leadership. Disorder and lack of discipline has become a common practice in gatherings of PPP. This time it embarrassed the two former prime ministers of the country. Yousaf Raza Gillani and Pervez Ashraf were holding a press conference at Arbab House when a worker started criticizing the leadership of the party and said that common workers were being ignored. After that, another worker stood up and starting talking against the higher leadership of PPP; to which many supporters of the leaders responded and the whole press conference was a scene of chaos afterwards. Raja Pervez Ashraf said that they will listen to all the complaints of their workers and this is the proof of PPP’s democratic values that common workers can talk against their senior leadership without any fear.
