Fifa corruption crisis: the key figures in the controversy
World football’s governing body has been left reeling after nine officials were arrested. Here we take a closer look at who is involved Fifa has become embroiled in the biggest corruption case in its history as its 2015 annual meeting was torpedoed by an early-morning raid on the host hotel, a separate raid on its headquarters and the arrest of a string of officials and sports industry representatives. Nine officials were arrested in connection
with a years-long investigation by US federal authorities, with seven detained at the five-star Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich, Switzerland. Swiss federal officials also said they wanted to question 10 Fifa executive committee members over the awards of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. Fifa officials arrested Jack Warner The former president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) was one of the Fifa officials arrested on Wednesday. He resigned from all of his positions in international football in June 2011, shortly after being implicated in numerous corruption allegations dating back to the 1980s. Warner, 72, was also a member of Fifa’s executive committee which, among other things, decides the dates, locations and for- Continued on pg 6

The Media’s Missing Conscience
A journalist is obligated to spread the true information to the targeted audience. On the other hand, biased reporting or getting indulged in cheap practice of sensationalizing/hyping sends the misleading messages to the general public and all concerned; hence depriving the audience of their right to true information. Probably, there is connivance or manipulative strategy at work to divert public opinion for any unknown motive. This time around, Declan Walsh (New York Times) wrote an article apparently pressuring/maligning the Pakistani IT company AXACT. In the past, he was expelled due to false journalism against Pakistan and for violating his terms of stay by visiting prohibited areas without permission. The report says that the journalist has, overtime, produced inaccurate and defamatory pieces about Pakistan. High-profile expulsion: Declan Walsh declared persona non grata. http://tribune.com.pk/story/571671/ high-profile-expulsion-declan-walshdeclared-persona-non-grata/. Amazingly, Pakistan didn’t sue New York Times for damages despite the clear case of slander/libel for false reporting on Pakistan. Back to AXACT: Was Pakistani media really too shy or too scared to break this story to Pakistani audience? Most probably, they were. Pre-emptive strike: It seems as if Axact is being targeted, and the red hot issue is being exploited because of their BOL channel launch. Nevertheless, AXACT contends, it’s only responsible to check if university or school is legitimate in that specific country. Axact clearly states: We give no degrees real or fake since it has nothing to do with us. AXACT claims it has been involved in providing technical support to the educational
institutions around the World. Mr Shoaib of (AXACT) maintains, we only provide services to universities. It means that Axact is only responsible to check if that particular university or school is legitimate in that specific country. The AXACT big shots clearly state: We give no degrees real or fake since, it has nothing to do with us. But the AXACT admits to being involved in providing technical support to the educational institutions around the World. While going through the whole website, one finds valuable information to substantiate AXACT’s point of view on the puzzle. In a statement Axact called the allegations “baseless, substandard, maligning [and] defamatory” and threatened legal action against the New York Times. The allegations have drawn attention in Pakistan as Axact has a high-profile media arm preparing to launch a TV news channel and publications in English and Urdu. In other words, the real problem seems to be the BOL TV’s offer of much higher wages and benefits package attracting the media workers of other channels, Most of all, BOL TV employees would own the channel as share holders. Axact’s offices in Karachi were also raided as part of the investigation. The FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) has found no proof against AXACT. Mr. Shoab has visited FIA centre and has categorically denied of selling degrees. The FIA officers are still clueless. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan ordered the probe after the New York Times published its report on Sunday. The Minister said, we will seek help from FBI, and Interpole. Negative Perception: The AXACT is selling Fake degrees. However,
Axact’s boss mentioned during “Off the Record talk show with Kashif Abbasi” that they were providing services to online universities to use Axact’s system as course management, student management etc., which also included providing services to online universities to print and give degree to students on behalf of university. He suggests that those, who do not have a clue about the online services being offered there, need to learn and find out more. There are thousands of companies and individuals out there offering these services as well as there are many businesses in the West offering essay/thesis writing services. It is not a crime in those countries. Same goes for online degrees. It is not illegal to issue a degree that is not accredited and is based upon work experience. Their side of the story is quite the opposite of the one they are being accused of. Fortunately, there are no charges yet. Maybe, AXACT is being victimized by the rival TV channels that are afraid of BOL TV channel. What’s going to be accepted as truth remains a mystery. Six AXACT directors have already been interrogated and more investigation is ongoing. Government of Pakistan is in touch with British authorities to find further material -information if any. Bad thing is the Media has destroyed the whole company without any proof; Government has put pressures on their employees, journalists to leave that company. That’s a disgrace the country has to suffer. How can we expect foreign investment if Pakistan suffers another setback adding to its already tarnished image? Caution: Journalism being one of the noblest professions provides tools to professionally handle the information in its true form in the proper context
regardless of race, culture or creed. And, there is no room for bias and dishonesty. Crime reporting and investigative reporting are all subject to legal and ethical limits indeed. Globally and locally, there is an urgent need of eliminating the “nongenuine” students; it can be done by identifying real students. As fake degrees violate the rights of hard working real students, the united nation must put a ban on such non-genuine educational institutions worldwide to protect the students with talent. http://www.geteducated.com/collegedegree-mills/204-fake-agencies-forcollege-accreditation List of Fake College Degree Accreditation Agencies. Also, make sure if the university is accredited to offer degree or diploma program by the relevant authorities. The government of Pakistan must play smart to deal with this national issue of international importance. Since thousands of fake degrees of various bogus universities, diplomas and student cards were found and seized, the Federal Investigation Agency lodged a fraud and forgery case against the Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh and others on Wednesday. There is confirmation of the registration of the FIR under sections 420, 468 and 471 of the Pakistan Penal Code (fraud and forgery charges. The big shots are in custody now. If proven guilty, AXACT will add to Pakistan’s misery. When national honor is at stake, the frustration is wide spread. Let’s wait till the dust settles. ``Millions of dollars in unclaimed benefits``
Technologically Advance Country By: M Hajee Lately we hear a lot about the lack of rain in California, and now Washington State and Oregon. With all the technology available to the USA in today’s day and age, there is no excuse for this state of affairs. There are several things the affected States could do:
Short tem: Seed the clouds with Silver dioxide solution. This creates electrical activity in the clouds and within hours it will rain. Long Term: Desalination plants. California has plenty of coastline, and for sure, not all of it is pristine beach area. Those areas that are not suitable for public beaches, should be made available for water desalination plants, and the water can be pumped to reservoirs nearby for onward distribution to the end users. When they realized that there would be no rain for a few moths straight, they should have embarked upon the short-term measure. Meanwhile, they should have made long range plans for the desalination plants along the coastline. Had they done this four or five years ago, they would not be in such terrible shape today. Really, there is no excuse in today’s day and age for such state of affairs in such a prosperous and technologically advance country

Canadian Citizens concerns: Harper Government looking for hundreds of thousands of families not currently registered for the enhanced child care benefit May 21, 2015– Richmond, British Columbia – Employment and Social Development Canada An estimated 12,800 families with children in Vancouver are eligible to receive money under the Harper Government’s proposed enhanced Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), but are at risk of not receiving the benefit unless they apply. The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development, along with the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors), today asked for help from the media and the public to encourage families to apply for the benefit. The majority of families with children, approximately 3.8 million, are known and will automatically receive the enhanced UCCB or be contacted by the Government to confirm their information. However, many eligible families are not currently captured by the Government’s UCCB system and may miss out on receiving money that is owed to them unless they apply. In British Columbia, an estimated 23,500 families with approximately 41,000 children are not registered. In Vancouver, as many as 12,500 families are estimated to be bridges. Pakistan urges EU to relax travel restrictions
Pakistan has urged the European Union (EU) to relax travel restrictions imposed on the country because of increasing incidence of polio as reported by Dawn. During a meeting with a German parliamentary delegation on Tuesday, President Mamnoon Hussain called for relaxing the restrictions, a spokesperson for the Presidency said. According to the spokesperson, the president said that international community should be considerate and help Pakistan to work for eradication of polio virus. The president said the main cause of the increase in the number of polio cases in recent years was terrorism because of which many tribal areas in the country were still inaccessible. About the travel restrictions imposed on Pakistan, the president said: “Pakistan is not responsible for the situation, but the elements who caused the spread of terrorism in the region.”He assured the delegation that Pakistan was committed to eradicating the disease and the situation was now improving. It is pertinent to mention here that the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB)
(an international body on polio) in its report for the current month expressed satisfaction over Pakistan’s efforts to overcome the crippling disease. The IMB works on behalf of international donor agencies and reports on performance of countries after six months of evaluation. The president also informed the delegation that the government was taking effective measures to curb terrorism, violation of human rights, discrimination against minorities and gender inequality. The delegation is headed by Ms Dagmar G. Wohrl, MP and Chairwoman of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development. President Hussain said Pakistan desired friendly relations with its neighbours and the entire world. “Pakistan believes in resolution of outstanding issues through dialogue and talks with India and Afghanistan are under way in this regard,” he added. The president said peace would be strengthened in the region if India agreed to the resolution of the Kashmir issue through the right of selfdetermination in accordance with UN resolutions.
The Corporate Crime Circle of the Federal Investigation Agency lodged a fraud and forgery case against the Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh in the small hours of Wednesday. Talking to The News, Director FIA Sindh Shahid Hayat confirmed the registration of the FIR under sections 420, 468 and 471 of the Pakistan Penal Code (fraud and forgery
charges). The move followed a late-night raid on the offices of Axact on Khayaban-e-Ittehad in DHA, where thousands of fake degrees of various bogus universities, diplomas and student cards were found and seized. Hayat also confirmed that Shaikh had been taken into custody and shifted to the Corporate Crime Circle for questioning. Earlier, FIA officials questioned senior officials of Axact, including their CEO Shoaib Shaikh. Talking to The News, FIA Sindh Director Shahid Hayat said one floor of the Axact headquarters in DHA, where the technical equipment and hardware including computers, etc, were present, had been sealed by the FIA’s Corporate Crime Circle and its team was present there for investigation. “The FIA’s technical and forensic experts are going through the equipment and computer records and trying to retrieve the data,” he said. “The data that is being acquired is being examined for evidence of the fake degree business,” he added. Hayat further said the heads of departments at Axact were

questioned on Tuesday and their statements recorded. The heads include those of the company’s Accounts and Human Resource departments. “We also recorded the statement of Axact CEO Shoaib Sheikh.” Hayat refuted media reports that the FBI and Interpol had been contacted for assistance in the case. “We haven’t written any letters to these agencies asking them for help so far,” he maintained. “We are investigating the case on our own for now and after our probe concludes, we will move on to further steps like registering FIRs etc.” The Axact scandal came to light when the New York Times published an investigative report claiming that the Pakistani IT company had made millions of dollars by selling fake degrees online. Following the NYT story, the Pakistan authorities were quick to act as Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan ordered the FIA to launch a probe into the fake degree scandal. Source : The News
‘Indian politicians gain votes through anti-Pakistan propaganda’ By propagating anti-Pakistan sentiments, political parties in India assume that they can make massive strides in elections and can garner votes, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi said on Wednesday. In an interview to BBC Urdu, Fatemi said: “Such propagation proves to be the biggest obstacle in improving Pakistan and India relations. It is stopping the two from overcoming their longstanding enmity. Fatemi regretted that there was no political party or leader in India who had mustered courage to state that “Pakistan is a reality; a neighbouring country with whom good relations will be to the advantage of the two countries and the region”. “There is no political party or leader in India who believes in developing regional cooperation with Pakistan. In India, many politicians believe that if they criticise Pakistan, they will get more votes,” he said. Fatemi said that during elections in Pakistan, politicians refrained from using negative slogans about India to campaign, whilst on the other hand, Indian
politics still revolved around India-Pakistan rivalry. “The situation in Pakistan is different; politicians are done using hate against India. Our political practices, in comparison, are more responsible. I pray that India also responds to us with maturity,” he added. Fatemi said this particular attitude from Indian politicians was the reason why relations between the two countries had worsened. “There is no doubt about the fact that we are disappointed

with them. We believe that both countries will be at an advantage if we begin negotiation talks. We started the initiative by sending them the invite, now we will not take the next step,” the prime minister’s special assistant said. He stated that the situation had deteriorated so much the Indian Defence were giving open threats that they will carry out acts of terrorism in Pakistan. “We should get one thing clear; Pakistan knows how to defend itself and will not be intimidated by any kind of threats. We are not afraid of such threats and neither can we be provoked,” Fatemi said. Moreover, the special assistant on foreign affairs said the government had never stated that it would carry out acts of terrorism against India. “Yes we did blame RAW, but we have substantial proof to back our claims. However, we never stated that we will ‘terrorise’ India. Pakistani politicians, government agencies and NGOs are all on-board to improve relations with India,” he added. Source : Daily Times Pakistan

UN talks on Yemen conflict Vancouver’s high real estate costs could cause a labour ‘postponed’
A UN conference designed to end the violence in Yemen has been postponed after the exiled government refused to participate, officials said, handing a huge blow to efforts to end the fighting. Sultan al-Atwani, an aide to exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, said the UN-brokered talks scheduled for May 28 had been “indefinitely postponed” after the Houthis refused to indicate their commitment to implement a Security Council resolution. “The attacks on Aden, Taiz, Ad-Dali’ and Shabwa make it difficult to go to Geneva,” Atwani told the Reuters news agency, naming southern provinces that have become war zones. Other Yemeni politicians and a UN official speaking to news agencies on condition of anonymity confirmed that the talks had been postponed. Yemen’s government, which has fled to neighbouring Saudi Arabia, has demanded the Houthis recognise its authority and withdraw from the country’s main cities - two points demanded by a UN resolution last month. UN Security Council res-
olution 2216 calls on the Houthis to relinquish territory they seized and surrender weapons they took from the army and other state institutions. The Houthis southward push forced Hadi to flee his southern stronghold, the port city of Aden to Riyadh and prompted an Arab coalition to launch air strikes against the rebels on March 26. According to the UN, nearly 2,000 people have been killed in the bombing campaign and fighting between the Houthis and Hadi loyalists. Despite nearly two months of air raids and street battles, the rebels still maintain control over much of the country. More than 545,000 people have been displaced and although some aid trickled in last week during a five-day ceasefire, people still lack basic needs, including water, electricity and fuel. A ship carrying 460 tonnes of Emirati humanitarian aid docked on Sunday in Aden. The shipment, including medical and food supplies, is the second from the United Arab Emirates following the delivery of 1,200 tonnes of aid last week, said local aid coordinator Ali al-Bikri. Another ship carrying 400 tonnes of diesel also arrived on Friday, said Bikri, who was appointed by Yemen’s government-in-exile. “Aden needs urgently at least 200,000 food rations for the displaced,” Bikri added. Aden has been rocked by fierce fighting between the Houthi rebels backed by troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and southern fighters allied with the exiled Hadi. Source: Al-Jazeera
Iraqi and Syrian forces ramp up attacks on ISIL
Forces in Iraq and Syria are bolstering their offensives on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, in a bid to retake key cities in both countries. Iraqi security forces and Shia fighters renewed efforts to retake the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Monday, as ISIL poured more fighters into the city that it claimed a week ago. Police sources said Iraqi forces had regained ground east of the city since launching a counteroffensive on Saturday, and on Monday has retaken parts of al-Tash, 20km south of Ramadi, which lies only a short distance from Baghdad. Ramadi residents said trucks carrying ISIL fighters arrived on Sunday evening before spreading out across the city. In Syria, the Syrian air force launched strikes on Monday at buildings captured by ISIL in the historic city of Palmyra. ISIL has reportedly killed hundreds of people since it moved into the Palmyra area 10 days ago, and its occupation of the city has raised fears that its fighters will destroy its famed Roman ruins. Syrian state TV reported that about 400 civilians had been killed by the group since Wednesday, while activists in Palmyra said ISIL fighters hunted down President Bashar alAssad’s troops and loyalists, killing up to 300 of them. The seizures of Iraq’s Ramadi and Syria’s Palmyra were the group’s biggest successes since a US-led coalition launched an air war against it last year. The
near simultaneous victories against the Iraqi and Syrian armies have forced Washington to examine its strategy, which involves bombing from the air but leaving fighting on the ground to local forces. In a sharp criticism, Ashton Carter, the US defence secretary, on Sunday accused the Iraqi army of abandoning Ramadi to a much smaller enemy force. “The Iraqi forces just showed no will to fight,” he told CNN’s State of the Union programme. However, on Monday, both Iraq and Iran hit back against Carter’s criticisms, with an Iranian general going as far as saying the US had “no will” to fight ISIL. In Baghdad, a spokesman for Iraq’s prime minister, Saad al-Hadithi, suggested Carter had “incorrect information”, while General Ghasem Soleimani, the head of the elite Quds forces in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said US and other forces were failing to confront ISIL. “Carter was likely given incorrect information because the situation on ground is different,” Hadithi told the Associated Press. “We should not judge the whole army based on one incident.” Hadithi said the Iraqi government believed the fall of Ramadi was due to mismanagement and poor planning by some senior military commanders in charge. However, he did not elaborate, nor has any action been taken against those commanders. The general in charge of Iran’s paramilitary activities in the Middle East, Soleimani, who is often seen on the battlefields of Iraq, said: “Today, in the fight against this dangerous phenomenon, nobody is present except Iran.” Meanwhile, in a move that could mark an expansion of US involvement in the conflict, Turkey said it and the US had agreed in principle to give air support to some forces from Syria’s mainstream opposition. crisis: Report
A new report is calling on the provincial government for change to prevent a future labour crisis. The Vancity study found that rising real estate prices are driving workers out of Metro Vancouver. “What we’re trying to do is spend a lot of attention on housing affordability and how difficult it is to buy a house in the market,” said Andy Broderick, Vancity vice-president of community investment. “What we’re trying to do is look at, if the trends continue, especially when you look at where wages have gone over the last 15 years, what’s the relationship between wages and home ownership and they’re troubling trends.” Broderick said by about 2025, an income of about $125,000 would be needed to afford the mortgage on the average home in Metro Vancouver. Only those with jobs such as senior business managers, senior construction managers and engineering managers
will be able to maintain affordable housing. “The basic challenge is that the inflation rate of housing has been running in the neighbourhood of 60 per cent over the last 15 years and wage levels have been running at about half that, a little less than that,” added Broderick. According to the report, the future growth of Metro Vancouver is dependent on high-quality labour, which is threatened by the rapid increase in the cost of living. It predicts Metro Vancouver’s housing crisis will motivate millennials (those born from about 1980 to 2000) to leave the region in search of better opportunities, leading to a labour crisis. “My advice to millennials is to recognize that there will be some level of adjustment of expectations,” said Broderick. “Vancouver’s a beautiful place, the Lower Mainland’s beautiful, there’s so many amenities that we have access to. You have access to those as a renter or an owner, in a condo or a single-family home, and the key is to recognize that there’s high value in the infrastructure the community has built, and that we all try to maintain it and to recognize, going forward, more of us may be renters long-term.” He added the keys to preventing this labour crisis is stronger regional planning and municipalities with to address its ability to add density to drive development in a direction they want it to go. 7 ways False Creek Flats could change Vancouver
Industrial zone near downtown core is undergoing a transformation process Unless you’re one of the 8,000 people who work in Vancouver’s False Creek Flats, chances are, it’s not a place you give much thought to. The City of Vancouver wants that to change, as it launches a planning process to redevelop the 450 acre industrial site. The area bounded by Prior Street, Clark Drive, Great Northern Way and Main Street was originally a swampy tidal flat, but was filled in early 1900s to make room for industry, much of it related to the railways. Today, most of the land is still owned by rail companies and the City of Vancouver. It’s home to more than 600 businesses ranging from manufacturing, transportation, textiles, food and beverage production to art galleries. It’s also the site of several city works yards, including the fire department and waste management.
Depending on the results of the planning process, here are seven big changes that could be coming to the area, according to the City of Vancouver’s manager of planning and development Brian Jackson.
1. “Green” job zone 2. St. Paul’s Hospital 3. Arts and education centre 4. Transportation hub? 5. New route into downtown 6. Higher rents 7. No new condos (at least in this neighbourhood) Source: cbc.ca/news

Oliver says open to voluntary pension contributions
After months of resisting calls to expand or enhance the Canada Pension Plan, the Conservative government is signalling it’s open to hearing some proposals. Finance Minister Joe Oliver announced in the House of Commons on Tuesday that the government intends to hold consultations over the summer on a “voluntary option” to contribute more to CPP. “(We) intend to consult with experts and stakeholders during the summer on options for allowing voluntary contributions to the Canadian Pension Plan,” read Oliver’s surprise statement. It’s unclear what type of system the Conservatives are planning, what the timeline is for the planned consultations, and when the government intends to bring forward a proposal. Oliver was adamant, however, that the government will not entertain an acrossthe-board expansion of CPP premiums. In fact, he described such a plan as an “economy-destabilizing” move. That may be a not-so-veiled shot at Queen’s Park, where
Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government has been moving forward with a new Ontario pension plan to supplement CPP savings. Wynne decided to go it alone after months of lobbying Prime Minister Stephen Harper to expand and enhance CPP — something Harper flatly rejected. Federally, both the New Democrats, as well as the Liberals in their 2011 election platform, have advocated for increasing contributions to CPP to ensure Canadians’ financial security in retirement. The Liberals also recommended allowing Canadians to voluntarily increase their contributions to save for retirement. NDP finance critic Nathan Cullen dismissed Oliver’s announcement Tuesday, calling it a vote grab in an election year. Cullen noted that the proposal was not included in the Conservatives’ 2015 budget, tabled just last month. “If they were serious about this, we would have seen something a lot sooner than this, just on the eve of the election,” Cullen told reporters. “(The NDP) have
At least 800 people have died in a major heatwave that has swept across India, melting roads in New Delhi as temperatures neared 50 °C. Hospitals were on alert to treat victims of heatstroke and authorities advised people to stay indoors on Tuesday, with no end in sight to the searing conditions. India’s Meteorological Department said it had issued heat warnings to several states where temperatures were forecast to top 45C over the next few days. “As of now, we don’t predict any respite from the extreme heatwave for the next few days,” said spokesman BP Yadav. Hundreds of people, mainly from the poorest sections of society, die at the height of summer every year across the country, while tens of thousands suffer power cuts from an overburdened electricity grid. Streets were deserted in Hyderabad, capital of the worst-hit state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India, where 551 people have died in the last week. “The state government has taken up education programmes through television and other media to tell

The Hindustan Times daily said the maximum temperature in the capital hit a two-year high of 45.5C on Monday - five degrees higher than the seasonal average. The paper carried a frontpage photo of a main road in the city melting in the heat, with the missioner for disaster management in the white pedestrian crossing stripes curling state. “We have also requested NGOs and and spreading into the black asphalt. government organisations to open up Delhi street food vendor Hari Om said drinking water camps so that water will be business was slow, with few people venreadily available for all the people in the turing out in the furnace-like conditions. towns.” Hyderabad street vendor P Gan- “All the food is getting spoilt even though gamma said the heat was making her head I prepared it fresh in the morning. long advocated to allow Canadians to choose to upgrade their contributions to the CPP. . . . Conservatives in budget after budget for almost a decade now have refused to move in that direction. Now, a few months out from an election, they’re getting religion on this.” Cullen said his party still advocates for an across the board increase in CPP premiums, which the Conservatives are ruling out from jump. But the Conservatives have not always opposed increased contributions for the CPP. In 2010, Oliver’s predecessor, Jim Flaherty, said he believed the government should look into a “modest, phased-in and fully funded” enhancement to the CPP to allow Canadians to “increase savings adequacy” for their retirement. On Tuesday, Oliver referred to such an increase a “job killer.” Rob Brown, a past president with the Canadian Institute of Actuaries who has done extensive research on the CPP, called Oliver’s announcement Tuesday both a “game-changer” and an “about-face”
from the Conservatives. But Brown said the administration of a voluntary contribution — where Canadians can contribute one year and skip the next — would be much more difficult than an across-the-board contribution hike. “Having said all of that, I think there will be take-up. Because CPP is well known, well regarded by Canadians as well as internationally,” Brown said. Source: The Star

are not coming out and they also don’t feel like eating. All they want is to sip cold water all day.” In Telangana state, which borders Andhra Pradesh in the south, 231 people have died in the last week as temperatures hit 48 degrees Celsius over the weekend. In the western state of Orissa 11 people were confirmed to have died from the heat. Another 13 people have died in the eastern state of West Bengal, where unions urged drivers in the city of Kolkata to stay off the roads during the day. India’s power industry has long struggled to meet rapidly rising demand in Asia’s third largest economy, with poorly maintained transmission lines and overloaded grids. The Hindustan Times warned that some of the hot, dry conditions could plunge the worst-affected states into drought before monsoon rains arrive. The monsoon is forecast to hit the southern state of Kerala towards the end of this month before sweeping across the country, but it will be weeks before the rains reach the arid northern plains. Canadian cancer cases predicted to spike by 41 per cent by 2030 The Canadian Cancer Society predicts new cases will spike in the coming years, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk and research by a 15-year-old Winnipeg high school student could help. “I read this article online that said that colas that I drink personally could lead to cancer and this concerned me so I decided to research this a bit further,” said Geemitha Ratnayake, in Grade 10 at Fort Richmond Collegiate. His research involved looking at the levels of a known carcinogenic chemical called 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) in popular carbonated beverages including colas and beer. The results of Ratnayake’s research surprised him. “We found that in many beers and a certain number of colas, there were more 4-MEI than the recommended level,” he said. A paper he authored on the research with help from a group of three researchers from the University of Manitoba was picked up by the Journal of Food Additives and Contaminants. The research is timely because a new report from the Canadian Cancer Society predicts more of us will be diagnosed with cancer in the coming years. According to the report, cases will spike by 41 per cent by 2030 when 277,000 new cases per year are expected. “The systems we have in Canada need to be able to accommodate that sheer volume of people are going to be coming down the road,” said Robert Nuttall of the Cana-
dian Cancer Society. According to CancerCare Manitoba, nearly half of all cancers can be avoided simply by making better lifestyle choices. “Yes, eat healthy. Eat fresh vegetables,” said CancerCare CEO Dr. Sri Navaratnam, “You know, you don’t have to eat frozen foods.” To be clear, she’s not saying diet alone will keep cancer at bay. Dr. Navaratnam says being smoke free, getting exercise and avoiding excessive sun exposure are all key as well, but she agrees consuming carcinogenic food additives won’t help. Ratnayake hopes people will look at his research and think twice about the things they eat and drink. “Definitely, I hope that is something that I can say that I was involved in,” said Ratnayake. Not even old enough to buy beer, he already has his sights set on reducing cancer rates. Source: CTV News

The effects of arrogance on the soul By: Harun Yahya • Arrogant people are always “on tenterhooks” • Their behavior is never sincere and genuine. • They think they will never make a mistake. • They therefore live in a constant state of discomfort. Arrogance leads people to sickness of mind and incorrect behavior. People who live in a state of pride and deception inhabit a dark internal world. A pitch black world full of a sincere dread of losing, making a mistake, being disgraced or humiliated, stress, doubt, hatred, anger and passion...This state of mind wears people down and ages them; it has a severe impact on their psychological and physical well-being. These people, who are spiritually weaker than others, are cold. It is barely possible to expect a pleasant gesture, a sign of love or appreciation, or an encouraging word from them. It is hard to laugh or enjoy oneself in their presence. Sudden outbursts are common wherever such people are present. Arrogant people’s behavior is always intended to make them appear more valuable and superior in the eyes of other people. For this reason, they have an excessive fear of making mistakes. They seek to ingratiate themselves with others for which reason they keep every moment under control and are careful to behave in a determined manner at all times. Whenever they attend a meeting they try to be the most impressive speakers, the best dressed, to come up with the most intelligent solutions, and to draw the most attention to themselves. They are therefore constantly “on tenterhooks.” Their behavior is never sincere and genuine. They always dread the prospect of behaving incorrectly. They think they will
never make a mistake. When told that they have made an error, they immediately try to absolve themselves of any blame. The situation of such people is described in these terms in these verses: Have you not seen those who claim themselves to be pure? Rather, Allah purifies whom He wills, and injustice is not done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed].(Surat an-Nisa’: 49) Do not be like those who left their homes in arrogance, showing off to people and barring them from the way of Allah. Allah encompasses what they do. (Surat AlAnfal:47) Being subject to criticism is something an arrogant person dislikes immensely. When criticized,
seeking behavior in the way they walk, talk and look. In the Qur’an Allah has stated that arrogance is a great failing: Do not strut arrogantly about the Earth. You will certainly never split the earth apart nor will you ever rival the mountains in height. (Surat Al-Isra’: 37) As for those who believe and do right actions, He will pay them their wages in full and will give them increase from His favor. As for those who show disdain and grow arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment. They will not find any protector or helper for themselves besides Allah. (Surat Al-Nisa:173) As for those who deny Our Signs and are arrogant regarding them, the Gates of Heaven will not be
their facial muscles tense up, and their expression dulls. They are dismayed by concern about damage to their prestige. They assume that, if they are criticized, they will be ridiculed or humiliated by others. Their gestures are no longer natural, and sudden rises and falls can be heard in their tone of voice. They therefore live in a constant state of discomfort. Ultimately, they never find peace and contentment. Arrogant people engage in exaggerated and attention-
opened for them, and they will not enter the Garden until a camel goes through a needle’s eye. That is how We repay the evildoers. (7:40) Arrogant people imagine that every characteristic they possess belongs to themselves. For example, they imagine that their intelligence stems from themselves. Instead of realizing that it is a blessing bestowed on them by Allah and giving thanks for it, they regard it as something to be proud

of. By overestimating this attribute in their own eyes they belittle and disparage those around them. As a result of this behavior, their associates find them unattractive and repellent. That means that arrogant people never have true, honest friends who feel a genuine affection for them. They also find it difficult to demonstrate affection for others. They always want to be the object of love and affection, because in their own eyes they are superior to everybody else. This state of mind leads to another behavior defect: envy. They envy the beauty, intelligence, reason, moral values or worldly goods of others. They regard everything those people possess with a jealous eye. If someone with superior features to their own is present, they immediately want to leave. Their envy means they are invariably unable to get along with others. Allah has given a troublesome mood to these people who are grabbed by the sickness of pride. In the same way that arrogant people gain nothing but trouble, sorrow and unhappiness in the life of this world, they also forgo the Hereafter and, most important of all, the love of Allah. Allah has revealed in one verse that He does not love the arrogant: Do not avert your face from people out of haughtiness and do not strut about arrogantly on the Earth. Allah does not love anyone who is vain or boastful. (Surah Luqman: 18) — The writer has authored more than 300 books translated in 73 languages on politics, religion and science.

AICP Annual celebration of Isra’ & Mi^raj-un-Nabi (PBUH)
By: Br Imad, AICP New Westminister Being one of the greatest miracles Allah ta^ala has granted our master Muhammad, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, and blessed his nation with, it is but natural for Muslims to observe the miracle of Isra’ & Mi^raj. As a leading Islamic association, the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects proudly commemorated this great miracle with a wonderful celebration at its Center at 553 Front Street, New Westminster on May 16. The program was well attended by Muslim community from all over Greater Vancouver. The event started with a moving recitation from the holy Qur’an (Tilawat-e-Quran) followed by beautiful touching Islamic Praises (Madih chants) performed by the one of a kind AICP Chanting Group. From various cultural backgrounds and ages the students of The Islamic Education School (TIES- AICP Saturday schooling program for Religion & Arabic language) presented valuable information about some of the endowments in Paradise. It was necessary for the speakers to emphasize the fact that Allah granted His Messenger this great miracle of Isra’ and Mi^raj to honor him sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam by showing
him the wonders of the upper world as stated clearly in The Glorious Qur’an in Surat al-Isra’, Verse 1 that means “ To show him of our wonders” because the belief of the Muslims is that Allah exists without a place. The ascension of the Prophet to the heavens never meant that Allah is there. Allah created places so He does not need any (subhanahu wa ta^ala). It was also a chance to clarify that the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam got close to Jibril for as much as two cubits or less and not to Allah otherwise it would be blasphemy, without doubt, because relating and attributing the distance and/or the place to the Creator is blasphemy. So, the purpose of Mi^raj is to honor the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam by showing him the wonders of the upper world and to raise his rank. The belief of the Muslims is that Allah exists without a place. Muslims should be warned about vile speechmakers and some books of some misleading information, such as a book attributed falsely to Ibn ^Abbas, named “Kitab al-Mi^raj” which means: The book of Mi^raj. The speakers also elaborated how the Isra’ (Night Journey) started when the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam rode al-Buraq (an animal from Paradise). He journeyed from the honorable Makkah to the honorable Aqsa where Allah the Exalted assembled for him all the Prophets-from Adam to ^Isa, peace be upon all of them, and he led them in Prayer. Some of the wonders which the Prophet saw during Isra’ are: The world, the devil, neglectors of prayer. From al-Masjid al-Aqsa the Mi^raj (Ascension) started; the Prophet ascended to the heaven on stairs, called al-mirqat. Those stairs are veiled from us. He then saw, in the first heaven, Prophet Adam who welcomed him and made supplication for him for good

things. Then the Prophet ascended to the second heaven in which he saw Prophets ^Isa and Yahya. The Prophet ascended to the third heaven where he found Prophet Yusuf. Then the Prophet ascended to the fourth heaven where he found Prophet Idris. In the fifth heaven, the Prophet encountered Harun, the brother of Prophet Musa. In the sixth heaven, he encountered Prophet Musa. Each of these Prophets received Prophet Muhammad with a warm welcome and made supplication (du^a’) for him for good things. Then the Prophet ascended to the seventh heaven, and that is where our Messenger saw Prophet Ibrahim. Prophet Ibrahim is the best of the prophets after our Prophet, Muhammad. Prophet Ibrahim had his back against al-Bayt al-Ma^mur when the Prophet saw him. To the inhabitants of the skies, al-Bayt al-Ma^mur is like the Ka^bah is to us, the inhabitants of the earth. Every day 70,000 angels go there , exit from it and never return. On the next day another 70,000 angels would go, come out, and never return and so on. In the seventh heaven, Prophet Muhammad saw Sidrat al-Muntaha, an extremely beautiful tree. In Paradise, the Prophet saw some of the bounties Allah prepared for the inhabitants of Paradise. He saw the Hur ul-^In: non- human nor jinn females whom Allah created. They are in Paradise and will be married to whom Allah willed.
The Prophet saw the wildan ul-mukhalladun: these are non- human, jinn, nor angels creations of Allah. They are a very beautiful creation of Allah whose appearance is like sprinkled pearls. They are servants of the inhabitants of Paradise. The Prophet saw the Throne (^Arsh) which is the ceiling of Paradise. The Throne is the largest creation in size. Allah did not create anything bigger in size than it. Allah ta^ala the Creator of everything does not need it, nor does He need to sit on it. Allah exists without a place because He created the places so He does not need them. The seven heavens and the earth in comparison to the Kursiyy are like a ring thrown in a desert, and the Kursiyy in comparison to the Throne is like a ring thrown in a desert. The seven heavens and the earth in comparison to the Throne are like a seed of mustard compared to the ocean. Allah created the Throne as a sign of His Power and He did not create the Throne to sit on it. Imam ^Aliyy may Allah raise his rank said: “Allah created the ^Arsh as an indication for His Power, and He did not take it as a place for Himself.” On this great occasion the AICP asks Allah to grant Muslims sincerity, more beneficial knowledge, and prosperity. We ask Allah to bestow on us the bounty of entering Paradise without torture and being with Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

MC requested Br. Umair Raza Attari, to deliver a speech on Isra wal- Miraj. Mr. Raza recited few verses of Sura Isra and quoted few other verses of Quran along with Hadiths. He said that Allah(swt) took his beloved Messenger in a short period of night from Mecca to Masjid e Aqsa and then Sidratul Muntha and then explain Prophet journey in step by step. After that he delivered a very short but dynamic speech and said that for the first part
of his journey from Mecca to Masjid al Aqsa, Prophet(saw) knew a lot of details as people who would not believe his physical journey. Our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW) got Salat ( 5 Prayers) from Miraj. Today this Miraj un Nabi reminds everyone of us to pray 5 times a day. At the end Darood o Salam and Duaa made for all.

Conflict Resolution By ASPIRE Training Institute
ASPIRE Training Institute successfully completed six sessions on Conflict Resolutions in May 2015. The training was conducted by Asad Asadullah, a PhD student from SFU’s School of Criminology. Crimes and conflicts occur in every community. They affect us personally, relationally, structurally and culturally. In response, conflict resolution is a mechanism to address the deeper aspects of crimes and conflicts. It envisions and responds to the ebb and flow of conflict as life-giving opportunities for creating constructive change processes that reduce violence, increase justice. This introductory course on conflict resolution familiarized participants with some key concepts — conflict, peace, conflict resolution, justice and reconciliation. It focuses on different conflict analysis tools; essential skills and practices for facilitating conflict resolution; and the application of peacebuilding interventions. Using a peacebuilding wheel, participants ex-
amine the range of available interventions including mediation, peacemaking circle, non-violent communication and restorative justice. This conflict resolution course equipped and empowered participants with skills and knowledge to approach conflict in a healthy way. The training session was well attended by the participants from diverse non profit organizations interested in social justice, community building, case management, youth development. The training session ended with the concluding remark of Azim Dahya, Board Chair of Muslim Food Bank. He thanked all participants for successful completion of the course. Our next course is Peer Mediation for Youth. This course exclusively designed for Muslim youth. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.. He said the physical journey of Prophet Mohammad (saw) is in 3 Ayats of Quran and in 19 Ayats indicate this Miraj in-
cident. Afterwards, Maulana Naumani delivered a dynamic speech in Urdu and told the Darrodo-Salam importance reference with Quran Sura 33- Ayat #56. Mulcair vows to repeal Bill C-51 at NDP rally in Surrey detrimental to “social frameworks, dem- made up my mind for me,” said Todd
The Liberals teamed up with Conservatives to pass the dangerous and ineffective Bill C-51... an NDP government would repeal Bill C-51,” NDP leader Thomas Mulcair said, garnering some of the loudest cheers of the evening from a crowd of approximately 1,200 at the Aria Banquet Hall in Surrey on Friday. The audience’s opposition to the widely protested anti-terrorism legislation was palpable, eliciting boos and cries of “shame!” at its mention. Critics fear that the bill, passed by the House of Commons and in its third reading, will give security agencies overreaching powers in collecting information on Canadians. In a joint statement of civil liberties and privacy advocate groups, theCanadian Civil Liberties Association said last month the law would be
ocratic values and fundamental rights.” In his short and slightly stiff speech under sparkling disco balls, Mulcair was clearly in an early campaign for the federal election slated for Oct. 19 this year. He reiterated policies that he has showcased over the previous months, including proposals for one million $15-a-day childcare spots opened across the country, a tax cut for small businesses and a federal minimum wage of $15 per hour. The leader also touted his record as the environment minister for the Quebec Liberal Party, during which he said carbon emissions decreased every year. The evening’s most fiery invective came from Jinny Sims, NDP MP for Newton—North Delta, who during her introduction of Mulcair chastised Trudeau for his support of Bill C-51, which she attributed to a fear of being criticized by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She and Jaspir Sandhu, NDP MP for Surrey North, took to Harper over what they characterized as a lack of support for the RCMP and gang prevention services in Surrey, which has seen a high number of gang-related shootings in 2015. “I’ve been waffling between the Liberals and the NDP, and after [Liberal Leader Justin] Trudeau voted in favour of Bill C-51, it
Beernink, a New Westminster resident and instructor at Greystone College, who attended the rally. Shakti Ramkumar, 18, came to the event looking for clear policy on how the NDP would deal with the oil sands in Alberta. “[Mulcair] didn’t really clarify that, but what he did say about the environment, I’m optimistic about it,” said the University of British Columbia engineering student, who lives in Surrey. The party’s supporters were riding a slew of good news in past weeks. The Alberta NDP’s victory, positive polling and a rally of 1,300 in Victoria on Thursday—the party’s largest rally ever in BC, said an NDP organizer—all made for “a collective spring in people’s step,” according to George Smith, Mulcair’s executive assistant. Mulcair’s visit to BC was partly to talk up BC NDP candidates for the upcoming election as recent numbers appear to show a boost in the party’s popularity in the province. A poll from EKOS Politics released on Thursday suggested that the NDP would take 29 per cent of the national popular vote in an election today, one percentage point behind the Conservatives and two ahead of the Liberals. The party led the poll for those aged 19 to 49 and
also in BC. On Wednesday, Insights West published a survey of British Columbians in which Mulcair had the highest approval rating among the party leaders with 52 per cent, though Prime Minister Stephen Harper was thought to be the leader who would be the best prime minister. The EKOS poll was based on a phone survey of 2,177 from Canadians from May 6 to May 12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points. The Insights West poll was derived from online survey of 814 British Columbians from May 7 to May 9 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Source: vancouverobserver.com/news
John Ivison: New Tory attack ad targets Liberal leader despite poll showing NDP ahead By: John Ivison The Harper Conservatives are targeting Justin Trudeau in a television attack-ad blitz that launches Monday but ignores Tom Mulcair, despite a poll that suggests the New Democratic Party has overtaken the Tories in popular support. The attack ad — “Justin Trudeau — just not ready” — is a departure from the vicious broadside that greeted him when he became Liberal leader. In that ad, the Conservatives used unflattering footage from a cancer charity fundraiser that showed Trudeau taking off his shirt. Many observers suggested this cre-
ated a backlash because Canadians find Trudeau likable. The new ad features a workplace setting with an older man, an Asian man, a middle-aged woman and a younger woman looking through a pile of resumés. The younger woman notes that Trudeau’s application includes his photo, but his experience “says nothing about balancing a budget or making a payroll.” “But didn’t he say budgets balance themselves?” interjects the older woman. The spot goes on to highlight issues of security (“he wants to send winter jackets to Syria”), justice (“legalizing marijuana
— is that the biggest problem we have to solve?”) and taxation (“he wants to cancel income-splitting for families”). There is a predictable line from the older woman that being prime minister “is not an entry-level job.” But there is also a surprising aside from the younger woman that suggests the Tories learned their lesson from the last campaign. “I’m not saying no forever, but not now,” she says. Deadly suicide blast at mosque in Saudi Arabia kills 21
A suicide bomber detonated an explosives vest during Friday weekly prayers at a Shia mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia, killing 21 people and wounding several others, a hospital official said. The official reached by telephone said more than 90 other people were wounded, including some who are in serious condition. The kingdom’s Eastern Province has been hit by previous attempts by extremists to foment sectarian tensions with its large Shia community, including a deadly shooting in November. The interior ministry said a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the mosque in Shiamajority Qatif, SPA news agency reported. “An individual detonated a bomb he was wearing under his clothes during Friday prayers at Ali Ibn Abi Taleb mosque in Kudeih in Qatif province, the ministry spokesman said in a statement. Qatif hospital issued an urgent call for blood donations after the attack and called in offduty staff to cope with the high number of casualties, the activist said. Naseema Assada, a resident of Qatif, said worshippers were celebrating the birth of revered Imam Hussein when the blast occurred. “The people are very angry, she said, adding that they tried to stop police from entering the Kudeih area. Residents had feared such an attack was coming, she said, because the government was failing to curb hate speech on social media against the Shia
community. “We don’t want a repeat of what is happening in Syria or Iraq here. This is our country and we love it. “The mufti of Saudi Arabia, the highest-ranking Sunni cleric, denounced the attack in a statement broadcast on state television. “It is a criminal act aimed at dividing the sons of the nation... and at sowing trouble in our country, he said. Islamic State claims responsibility The Islamic State group said in an online statement that it had carried out the deadly suicide bomb attack in Saudi Arabia. The statement said “the soldiers of the Caliphate were behind the attack by a suicide bomber “who detonated an explosives belt in the mosque in the Shiite-majority city of Qatif. It identified the bomber as Abu Amer al-Najdi, and published a picture of him. Lebonan holds Saudi Arabia ‘totally responsible’ Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah movement said on Friday that Saudi Arabia was “totally responsible for a suicide bombing at the mosque in the Gulf kingdom. “Hezbollah holds Saudi authorities totally responsible for this ugly crime, the group said in a statement condemning the bombing. It accused the ultra-conservative kingdom of “sponsoring and backing criminal murderers and of “failing to protect its citizens who have long complained of marginalisation.
Hunt is on The interior ministry spokesman said Saudi Arabia would “hunt down anyone involved in this terrorist crime carried out by people seeking to undermine national unity. “The website of Arryadh newspaper posted pictures showing bloodied prayer rugs and part of the ceiling of the mosque that had caved in. Kudeih is in the oil-rich Eastern Province, home to most of Saudi Arabia’s minority Shia community which has long complained of marginalisation in the Sunni-ruled kingdom. Saudi police have made a string of arrests in recent months of extremists suspected of plotting attacks aimed at stirring sectarian unrest in the Eastern Province. Pakistan condemns attack on Saudi mosque Pakistan on Friday strongly condemned deadly terrorist attack at the mosque in Qadeeh, Saudi Arabia during Friday prayers. Foreign Office Spokesman Qazi Khalilullah in a statement said the people and government of Pakistan extend their heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for speedy recovery of the injured. “We share the grief of the brotherly people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over this
cowardly and deliberate attack against innocent civilians, he said. The spokesman said Pakistan reiterated its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Last November, gunmen killed seven Shias, including children, in the eastern town of AlDalwa during the commemoration of Ashura, one of the holiest occasions of their faith. Four men carried out the attack after killing a man from a neighbouring village and stealing his car to use in the shootings, the interior ministry said. In April, authorities said they arrested 93 jihadists, including 62 suspected of links to the Islamic State group who were plotting attacks to “incite sectarian sedition. Since 2011, protests and sporadic attacks on security forces have taken place in Shia areas. Source: dawn.com/news/

By Janine Solanki On Saturday May 23rd social justice and antiwar activists joined with the Yemeni and Muslim community to protest the brutal and devastating two-month long Saudi-led bombing campaign against Yemen. The antiwar rally and petition campaign, organized by Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) took place in Downtown Vancouver, in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. With banners, picket signs and an information table, the protest called attention to the devastation that the U.S.-backed Saudi bombing has caused to Yemen. The protest reached beyond Vancouver too, with articles, photos and video of the rally reflected in many Arabic newspapers and online news throughout the Middle East as well in Yemen, showing how activists are standing up against this criminal war on Yemen. The rally speakers included Yemeni activist Asaad Al-Jaboubi who spoke of the destruction caused by the Saudi bombing of Yemen, as well as Mamdoh Ashir, Iraqi-Canadian and Muslim community activist who spoke out against the attacks on Yemen as well as against the new U.S. war on Iraq. Azza Rojbi, Tunisian social justice activist and MAWO executive committee member, encouraged
PALESTINE people to stand side by side in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Yemen against the brutal attacks. Thomas Davies, editorial board member of Fire This Time Newspaper, spoke about how the U.S.-backed Saudi war on Yemen is part of a new era of war and occupation that has encompassed the U.S.-led war and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq LIBYA as well as the military interventions, sanctions and meddling in Libya, Syria, Iran, and many other countries in the region. SYRIA According to United Nations estimates, over 1,850 innocent Yemeni people have been killed and more than 7,390 injured since the Saudi Arabian assault began. However, these are conservative estimates and other sources almost double the number of people killed. AFGHANISTAN The indiscriminate bombing campaign against Yemen has created a humanitarian IRAQ crisis where basic infrastructure has been destroyed, over half a million people have been displaced from their homes, and 12 million people in Yemen do not know where their next meal is coming from. Millions of Yemeni people are suffering from shortages of food, water, fuel and medicines because of the bombing and the air, land and sea blockade. 21 Foods You Didn’t Know You Could Freeze
by: Tricia Drevets Off-Grid Foods When I was a new mother, I remember an older, more experienced mom advising me to get a freezer. She assured me I would need one now that my husband and I had started our family. At the time, I had plenty of room in the freezer section of my kitchen refrigerator, so I wasn’t sure what she meant. Today, I don’t know what I would do without the freezer we eventually purchased for our garage. It saves us time and money again and again. With a big family, I am accustomed to making “doubles” of certain meals – one for now and one for later — and to freezing leftovers. I also routinely freeze many fruits and veggies, but I am still learning other ways that a freezer can help us extend the life of our food and save on our food bill. With everyday items, such as aluminum foil, freezer bags and ice trays, you can freeze many more items than you may have thought. Here is a list of some foods you may not have thought you could freeze: 1. Milk I used to carefully plan out how much milk to buy before my family went out of town so as not to waste any. Invariably, I would miscalculate, and we would run out. Did you know you can safely and easily freeze milk? Just pour out enough to allow for expansion and then place your milk container in the freezer for up to four to six weeks. When you return home, thaw the milk in the fridge for a day or so, give it a good shake to blend any separation that has occurred, and it is ready to drink. 2. Butter You can take advantage of sales on butter by freezing it for later use. You can separate the sticks out and place them in airtight containers, but I have had success freezing it right in the original wrappings. Butter will stay fresh six months or more in the freezer. 3. Cookie dough You can make your own homemade slice-andbake cookie dough. The next time you make a batch of cookies, double the recipe and roll the dough into a tube. When you are ready to bake more cookies, just slice off portions onto your
cookie sheet. Another option is to freeze small round portions. 4. Bread Bread freezes and defrosts amazingly well. If you have an extra loaf or will not be using your bread before the expiration date, simply pop it in the freezer and then take it out when you need it. Bread should last about six months in the freezer. You also can freeze bread scraps and heels to make your own bread crumbs. Just let it defrost on the counter. 5. Corn You can freeze your home-grown or farmer’s market corn in the freezer right in the husk. If your corn is from the grocery store, however, you’ll want to husk the corn and blanch it before freezing it in order to prevent enzymes from causing a loss of flavor, nutrition and color. 6. Avocados Avocados will change consistency when frozen and defrosted, so you may have steered clear of them as a freezer option. However, they still are great for dips or guacamole. Wash and cut the avocados in half before peeling them. You can freeze the halves or peel and puree the avocado along with lemon juice and then store the mixture in a freezer for up to six months. 7. Hummus Hummus also freezes well. Place it in a freezer container and drizzle the top of the hummus with olive oil before sealing the container. Thaw it in the refrigerator for a day; then mix well before eating. 8. Onions
You can go on an onion chopping spree and then freeze the chopped onion for use in soups, stews and casseroles. Also, if your eyes are sensitive to onions, keeping them in the freezer will lessen the irritation. 9. Bananas You can freeze ripe bananas peeled or unpeeled to use later in recipes and smoothies. The skin will darken, but the taste will not be affected. 10. Potatoes Potatoes starting to sprout? Don’t throw them away just yet. Peel them and blanch them in boiling water for about five minutes. Let them cool in cold water before packing them in airtight containers for freezing. 11. Mushrooms Freeze mushrooms for pizza toppings or casseroles. They defrost quickly in the fridge. 12. Cheese You can freeze blocks of cheese or containers of shredded cheese for later use. To make sure shredded cheese doesn’t clump together in chunks, just add a little cornstarch or flour to the bag and shake to mix well. 13. Garlic and Ginger Place crushed garlic in ice cube trays. If you add a bit of olive oil before freezing, the garlic will pop out easily. This technique also works well for ginger. 14. Flour Guess what? Many chefs keep their flour in the freezer because it helps make flakier crusts. Try it! It cuts down on pesky insects in your
pantry, too. 15. Eggs Crack your eggs and store them (without shells) for six to eight months in bags or in ice cube trays for use in recipes or for scrambled eggs. Just let them thaw in the fridge before using. 16. Cooked rice and pasta Did you make too much rice or pasta? You can freeze it! It will defrost easily in the fridge and be ready to re-heat. 17. Chicken broth Chicken broth can last four to six months in the freezer. Transfer to a freezer-safe air-tight container and keep handy for your soup and other recipes. 18. Herbs Finely chop fresh herbs and place them in ice cube trays, top with a bit of olive oil and freeze. You can then add them directly to your recipes without defrosting. 19. Tortillas Tortillas can be frozen well for months at a time. As they may dry out a bit, place them in the microwave in a damp paper towel briefly to revive them before preparing for a meal. 20. Vegetable Scraps Collect and freeze all those carrot ends, potato skins and onion layers until you have enough to make a flavorful homemade veggie broth. 21. Lemons Often you only need half a lemon for a recipe. What to do with the other half? Freeze it, of course, for the next time you need lemon zest or lemon juice. Ditto for oranges. 22. Nuts You can freeze nuts and seeds to keep them fresh for baking and other needs. Best part? You don’t even have to defrost them. Hopefully you now have a few new ideas for better making use of your freezer. Here’s a final piece of advice: Label all your items carefully with the complete date, and periodically go through your freezer to get rid of items that are past their best-use date. Place smaller items on the door or in freezer bins so that they are easy to find.

Our Talented Youth: Isma Ishtiaq
By: Ms. Asma Ayyaz We were talking about existence of conflict, problems in the family between parents and children in last week’s edition. Tese problems do not arise overnight! They are there, if one notices the changes, unusual behaviour, and other changes over a period of time. When a child starts being moody, spends too much time on electronic devices or in his or her room, avoids family gatherings and is vague about their whereabouts, no longer talking about their activities, friends... these are some of the signs that indicate an issue is arising. Parents have their own problems too to deal with. They hope everything will be alright in due time. They try to talk, help, explain but there is a dead-end or it becomes worse. There are courses for working in an organization in different fields of bsiness but there is not a single course, training to become an ideal parent or a child! So waiting will solve
nothing. Everyday is a new day with new challenges. What is acceptable in one household can be very looked down upon in another’s house. We must reflect our own childhood, thought, beliefs, preferences and dislikes. With their limited experiences and outlook no one is totally correct or wrong. The need of the time is to understand the preception and way of thinking of the other individual. We look forward to hearing your experiences and thoughts – whether you are a young adult or a parent.
The Miracle Media would like to welcome your feedback views and thoughts on this topic of parents and youth problems your identity will be kept anonymous. Please send at Email: miraclenews@telus.net

Positive Vibes
By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor We go to sleep each night and wake up in the morning to a new day with new opportunities - a day which is filled with power and freedom to choose. The minute we wake up, we can choose to get out of bed and make the most of our day or feel dread about the day ahead. This is nobody’s choice but ours. Generally, the way we start our day influences how we feel for the rest of the day. When you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to take a few deep breaths and find something that you’re grateful for (your children, partner, your health or nature outside your window). Take this time to be thankful for all that you have in your life instead of wasting your energy on thinking about what you don’t have. Instead of pouncing straight out of bed, simply observe your breath. Breathe in for a count of 4 to 5 and breathe out also for a count of 4 to 5 allowing everything to drop away. Notice how your breath enters your body, notice how your breath leaves your body, and notice the little pause between each breath. This will allow you to create a sense of peace within and it will also help get you into a good head space before your feet touch the ground. It feels good and it’s an amazing way to consciously set your energy and intention towards your day moving, follow this with a nutritious breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and fuel your body to face the day ahead. Get clear about your intentions for the day. For example you can intend to have a productive day. You can intend to have quality time with your family and friends with
no distractions. You can intend to have a fun and brilliant day. You can intend to have a calm and peaceful day. You can intend to learn something new or be helpful to someone. Whatever it is just be clear about what it is you want your day to be. In order to create, manifest, and attract it, you must first align your heart, mind, and spirit with your intention. In other words, you truly need to feel it! Many people don’t understand the power of thoughts, because they live every day on autopilot, doing most things out of habit, and therefore they create their reality unconsciously, as if they’re wearing a blindfold. But whether we’re aware of it or not, we create our reality with our thoughts and behaviour - and this means we have the power to choose to be a conscious, mindful creator and change our reality to what we really want it to be. Remember, you choose your thoughts, you choose your behaviour, you choose the outcome. And every choice you make determines how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Youm-e-Takbeer: PM Nawaz reiterates resolve for unity of Pakistan
Youm-e-Takbeer is a day of pride for the Pakistani nation and the Muslims across the world, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday. “With the blessing of Almighty Allah, Pakistan became the seventh nuclear power of the world. So, the nation, while reiterating its resolve for solidarity and unity of Pakistan, should celebrate the occasion,” he said in a message issued on the eve of Youm-e-Takbeer. The national day is observed every May 28 since Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in Chaghi, Balochistan, on May 28, 1998, in response to India’s nuclear explosions 17 days earlier. PM Nawaz said that on May 11, 1998, India had disturbed the balance of power in the
South Asian region. “There was a surge in the aggressive designs of India, as it not only exposed its intentions of sending the armed forces to Azad Kashmir, with the converging of the army on the Line of Control, but its defence minister also announced that the Indian Army would be armed with the nuclear weapons.” Under such a nerve-racking situation, Pakistan initiated consultations to cope with the Indian threat and face the international pressure mounting on the country for not conducting the nuclear tests, the premier added. “But, fortunately, the spirit and thoughts of the entire nation and by keeping the national interest in sight, we took the decision, and by the grace of Almighty Allah, on May 28, 1998, Pakistan became a nuclear power.”

Nawaz said that after conducting the nuclear tests, Pakistan’s defence had become impregnable and the country’s enemies could not dare look towards it with ill intentions. “Now the enemies have changed their strategy and are trying to weaken the country internally.” The government alone cannot face such a situation, and for this purpose the government, the nation and the armed forces have to tackle it together, the PM said. “By the grace of Allah Almighty, today the entire Pakistani nation is united on the issue of terrorism.” The premier vowed that with the support of the masses, the nation would definitely succeed in its objective to make Pakistan a modern and developed country. Book on Allama Mashriqi in World-Famous American Book Fair (2015)
Allama Mashriqi Narrowly Escapes the Gallows, a book by Nasim Yousaf (Mashriqi’s grandson), will be exhibited at the world-renowned BookExpo America taking place at the Javits Center in New York City from May 27-31, 2015. Exhibitors from around the world will be displaying their works at this event and attendees include publishing industry professionals, authors, media and others. In addition to BookExpo, Mr. Yousaf’s books on Allama Mashriqi and Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan will be exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair and the American Library Association Annual Conference (San Francisco). In April of 2015, his book entitled Mahatma Gandhi & My Grandfather, Allama Mashriqi: A Groundbreaking Narrative of India’s Partition was exhibited at the London Book Fair. The Library Journal (USA) will also have promotional information about this book at the aforementioned Library Association conference in June. These events are an opportunity for people from around the world to learn more about Mashriqi’s life. Back Cover for Allama Mashriqi Narrowly Escapes the Gallows: “The undesirable torture I have been put to by the previous Government for uncommitted crimes will remain a landmark in the history of corruption and tyranny for all time...My suffering almost to the point of death that I had to face at the hands of the political tyrants, has not gone in vain and I am happy that truth and righteousness have at last won a battle like of which has, perhaps seldom happened in the history of the defeat of evil.” - Allama Mashriqi, 1958 Allama Mashriqi Narrowly Escapes the Gallows chronicles one of the most high-profile court cases in South Asian history. The case arose in 1958 when Allama Mashriqi, who led the freedom of the Indian sub-continent, was falsely implicated in the assassination of the former Chief Minister of then
West Pakistan (East Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971). News of Mashriqi’s arrest for the murder spread like wildfire; it was broadcast via radio transmissions, special supplements (Zamima), and front-page banner-headlines. The nation was gripped by the news and could not believe that Mashriqi was responsible for such a heinous act. As the subsequent trial demonstrated, Mashriqi was an innocent man and the trial was actually part of a broader plan to “get Mr. Mashriqi and other accused Khaksars hanged” (The Pakistan Times, June 15, 1958). About the Author: Allama Mashriqi Narrowly Escapes the Gallows is written by Scholar and Historian Nasim Yousaf, a grandson of Allama Inayatullah Khan Al-Mashriqi (famously known as Allama Mashriqi). Mr. Yousaf has thus far published 34 works, which include 15 books and 19 digital versions of rare and historical documents (including a digital compilation of Mashriqi’s newspaper Al-Islah). Mr Yousaf’s works have brought awareness in both the East and West regarding Allama Mashriqi’s leading role in the freedom movement in British India. Mr. Yousaf’s books on Allama Mashriqi (and Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan) can be found in top research and academic libraries around the world (from Australia to Europe and Africa to North America). His articles have appeared in prestigious scholarly and academic journals in the US and his bio has been published in “Who’s Who in the World” and “Who’s Who in America.” In March 2015, the Independent Book Publishers Association, the largest not-for-profit trade association in the book publishing industry, featured Mr. Yousaf in one of its publications. Public interest in Mr. Yousaf’s works has been strong and is evident from his popular fan page on Facebook (http://
www.facebook.com/nasimyousaf.26), which has thousands of “likes” and is visited by a large number of people on a weekly basis. Ultimately, the impact of Mr. Yousaf’s works has been to bring awareness amongst the public regarding the Indian subcontinent’s distorted history as well as to inform the people of Mashriqi’s important role in bringing freedom to India. More information on the author is available on the internet and social media, including Academia.edu, Scribd, YouTube, Flickr, and Twitter.

Misbah hopes to captain in home Test
Misbah-ul-Haq, who turns 41 on Thursday, expressed his wish to be able to lead Pakistan in a home Test before retiring. International cricket returned to Pakistan after a six-year hiatus, but Misbah, who retired from ODIs following Pakistan’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Australia in March, regretted not being a part of the current squad. He praised Zimbabwe’s decision to tour Pakistan and hoped that it would open the gates for other Test nations to make the trip in the near future. “I would love to captain Pakistan in Tests at home before I retire,” Misbah told cricket.
com.au. “I hope soon some team will visit Pakistan and we will play a Test series here. Even during the matches against Zimbabwe I regretted not being part of the team. “People have proved that cricket is still alive in Pakistan,” he said. “The way fans have turned out to watch matches, despite searing heat and extraordinary security measures, it has strengthened the view that international cricket should be played here. “The people of Pakistan have
shown to world that they can’t be kept away from cricket. We have given a very strong message to the world,” he said. “Zimbabwe is not much popular as compared to other cricketing countries, (and) still the fans have come out in large numbers to support them. It shows how badly we were missing cricket.” “The government should take more steps to bring cricket in Pakistan.” Misbah said the home advantage could do wonders in nurturing the
new upcoming talent in Pakistan cricket. The series was received with extraordinary fervour and excitement in Pakistan. Fans with placards and posters that read “thank you Zimbabwe” were a common sight at the Gaddafi Stadium during the two T20Is. Though the talks for a Test series against India are under way, it is expected that they will play in the UAE, a neutral venue. Source: Cricinfo
Nadeem Barghouthi, a 25-year-old who has played soccer since he was a child, says Palestinian athletes don’t have the opportunity to live like their counterparts elsewhere, because politics always manage to get in the way. Barghouthi’s team, the Silwan Football Club in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem, is no exception. In 2012, Israeli authorities temporarily shut down the club and claimed it had financial links to Hamas, the political organization that controls Gaza and enjoys wide support in the occupied West Bank. Barghouthi rejects the charge, saying Israel “considers all Palestinians terrorists.” “We are just athletes like athletes anywhere else, not terrorists,” he said. When Barghouthi’s team wants to play in other parts of the West Bank, members are subjected to lengthy searches at Israeli military checkpoints. Their Israeli counterparts are not. “Palestinian soccer players struggle to travel, and after a match, we always know that we could be harassed or arrested by Israeli soldiers when returning,” he said. “Israeli players, on the other hand, travel without problems and don’t face any restrictions. This is discrimination. It’s oppression.” The situation has prompted the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), activists and politicians to campaign for FIFA — the international body that governs soccer — to suspend the Israeli Football Association (IFA) unless Israel lifts its restrictions on the movement of Palestinian athletes between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and on imports of sports equipment bound for the Palestinian territories. FIFA is set to vote on the matter at its congress in Zurich on May 29. Aside from expulsion, suspension — which would bar Israeli teams from international competition — is the gravest punishment FIFA can
impose on member countries. In Jerusalem on Tuesday, FIFA President Sepp Blatter met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told Blatter that soccer should be a “vehicle of goodwill between nations,” not a political tool. The next day, Blatter met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, hoping to persuade the Palestinians to drop their suspension campaign and try to resolve the issue without taking their proposal to a FIFA congress vote. Blatter has also proposed a peace match between the Palestinian and Israeli national teams. But Jibril Rajoub, the chairman of the PFA, says the campaigners have no intention to stop the push for suspension until their demands are met. “All we are requesting are basic rights for our athletes,” he told Al Jazeera. “The Israeli occupation’s overt oppression and racist policies, including movement restrictions for athletes, prevent us from participating in the game to our full potential.” “Our cause is just, and FIFA has had to discuss Israel before,” Rajoub said, adding that the IFA’s inclusion of Israeli football teams from illegal Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank contravenes FIFA rules. In 2013 the PFA raised the travel issue in FIFA’s congress, prompting Blatter to call on Israel to ease the restrictions. In May 2014 Blattervisited Israel and the Palestinian territories and met with Netanyahu and Abbas, after Rajoub’s earlier calls for sanctions on Israel. Asked if Israel has been in contact with the Palestinians about the campaign, Rajoub said Israel has “approached us only from a position of pressure and threats.” He said he is optimistic that the FIFA congress will suspend Israel. After a news conference with Blatter on Thursday, Rajoub said the suspension issue would remain
on the table at the coming FIFA congress. “There will be no compromising on the free movement of our athletes and officials,” he said after talks with Blatter. Earlier this month, as Rajoub led a FIFA tour delegation in the West Bank city of Hebron, Israeli settlers accosted and verbally harassed the group. Israeli settler violence against local Palestinians has become routine in Hebron, where hundreds of Israelis live in settlements in the heart of the Palestinian Old City and enjoy military protection. “The soldiers came and prevented us from walking in the Old City,” Rajoub said. “It was the clearest example of Israeli racism toward Palestinians. The settlers harassed us and said racist innuendos. We told them that we were leading a tour for FIFA, and they said it didn’t matter because the area was only for Jews.” In response to the Palestinian FIFA push, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has launched a diplomatic campaign against suspension. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has been in contact with sports ministers and soccer clubs in more than a hundred countries, allegedly providing information that proves several Palestinian athletes have been involved in armed activity. Israel’s new minister of culture and sports, Miri Regev, spoke out Sunday against the suspension campaign, saying “a separation must be made between sports and politics, as long as there is loyalty to the state and its laws.” Red Card Israeli Racism, a U.K.-based campaign that calls for soccer leagues and teams to boycott Israel, plans to protest outside the coming FIFA conference in Zurich. “We think it’s absolutely vital that Israel is suspended from FIFA and then makes good on obligations before it is allowed back in,” said group member Geoff Lee. “The football establishment should uphold the
highest values of anti-racism,” he said. He argued that Israel ought to be shunned “until it respects the human rights of all Palestinians and complies with international law.” A group of 19 public intellectuals, including American linguist Noam Chomsky and English novelist John Berger, published an open letter on May 15 in The Guardian calling on FIFA to respect the Palestinian call for the IFA to be suspended. The signatories pointed to FIFA’s 30-year exclusion of apartheid South Africa as a precedent. During the Yugoslav wars, FIFA also suspended Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1994. In Jerusalem, soccer player Barghouthi said he and his teammates support the campaign but don’t expect FIFA to boot Israel. “We think it’s good to put pressure on Israel over the occupation and the way it affects all Palestinians, not just athletes,” he said. “We don’t think Israel will actually be suspended, but it’s good that there is more of the world’s attention on what is happening to us. We simply wanted to be treated like athletes anywhere else in the world.” Source: Al-Jazeera
