WHAT DOES EID AL FITR TEACH US? The end of Ramadan is followed by the month of Shawaal which gives the gift of Eid ul Fitr to the Muslims. Having attained the wealth of Taqwa and spiritual correctness during the daily dawn to dusk “Fasting Work Out” of Ramadan, many practising Muslims fortunately manage to be successful in becoming self disciplined. The positive change makes them feel at peace; immediately next thing for them happens to be the most exciting festivity of Eid-ul-Fitr. In other words, upon successful completion of the month of Ramadan, the Eid day, in fact is a ‘Thanksgiving Day’ for having gone through a tough exercise towards “self-purification.” Allah o Akber. The noble Qur’an has clearly expressed the act of Fasting as a blessing and not a calamity: “Allah desires ease for you, not your discomfort. He desires you to fast the entire month, and that you may magnify Him for giving you His guidance, and that you may give thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185). Among other essential elements is paying Zakat (wealth tax) and Fitra to minimize the harsh impact of any prevailing misfortune, hunger or widespread poverty. Therefore, when it comes to this religious obligation, the Muslims are duty bound to help out the needy people before the Eid Prayer. Charity: The Muslims are required to pay Zakat based on their wealth and financial ability. It consists of spending 2.5% of one’s wealth for the benefit of the needy people. The good thing is paying Zakat is considered to be the personal responsibility of all Muslims to eliminate
inequality and ease economic hardship of others for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa taalaa. Charity in the form of fitra (fitrana) is obligatory at the end of the Fasting month before the Eid prayer. This again means the real happiness of “EID” lies in sharing our happiness with “the have nots.” Furthermore, while meditating and prostrating in congregation to God Almighty, the Muslim Ummah actually displays its real spirit of brotherhood and equality. So, on this happy occasion, we should always remember those who are afflicted with poverty, ignorance, disease, or are otherwise less fortunate. The other beauty is Muslims on this very day are encouraged to erase their grudges or differences if any with others that might have occurred during the year. Eid day schedule: After offering the regular Salat ul Fajr (the pre-sunrise prayer), the Muslims head out shortly after the sun-rise to perform the obligatory prayer in congregation (slaat ul Eid) in open areas, community centres, or at masajid in some cases. However, the important thing is Eid prayer is followed by special Khutba (Sermon) and supplication asking for God’s forgiveness, mercy, peace and blessings for all living beings across the world. The Imam delivers khutba explaining to the Muslims about performing rituals of Eid, such as the compulsory Zakat or Sadaqat ul Fitr. It’s extremely important to listen to the obligatory Eid Khutba as well. The Muslims are encouraged to stay away from worldly desires; they are advised to focus entirely on pleasing
and thanking Allah for His merciful blessings. Indeed, it is a rejuvenation of the Deen of Islam, which creates stronger bonds between the Muslim person and his/her Lord. Right after the Khutba is over, Muslims hug each other wishing Eid Mubarak, and then they visit their relatives and friends. Also, The Eid gifts, known as Eidie, are frequently given on this precious occasion to children and immediate relatives. Children receive gifts in cash or kind; sweets and tasty dishes are served throughout the day. Altogether, the caring Muslims donate money generously; they contribute to their local food banks for the less fortunate. Beyond doubt, Eid is an opportunity for Muslims of different ethnic or cultural background to share together for prayers and celebrations. Usually, the Canadian Muslims take time off from work to join prayers held in big-city mosques or Islamic centres, convention centres or sport grounds. In the larger cities of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa, congregational prayers may be offered at multiple times to accommodate the large number of worshipers. In many Canadian communities, Muslim organizations and mosques also hold large Eid parties that are open to the entire Muslim community. Smaller Muslim communities, particularly in the rural areas, hold other communal gatherings in masajid or rented community halls. Some groups reserve other activity centres for the full day of fun and celebration, while others may hold
public Eid parties in mosques as a means of OUTREACH to the nonMuslim society. After the Eid prayer, Muslims usually make long distance phone calls to greet dear ones. The festival is aimed at promoting peace, strengthening the feeling of brotherhood and enabling the Muslims to move on with their lives normally as a refined Umma in the eyes of our Creator. Hence, the Eid and its celebration in Islam carry a distinctive meaning and spirit as they are totally different from the celebrations in non Muslim communities. It’s commonly seen that holiday for non Muslims is a chance to indulge in worldly pleasures, or involve oneself sinfully or immorally and unlawfully. But for Muslims, there is zero tolerance in the eyes of Allah subhanahu wa talaa for committing forbidden acts. In nutshell, the `EID’ is an occasion to increasingly go for good deeds only. The ‘EID’ doesn’t give an automatic ticket to take a vacation from Islamic responsibilities, and no wasting of time and money is permitted either, simply because our obedience and submission to the will of Allah cannot be compromised under any circumstance. Furthermore, the ‘EID’ is a chance to multiply good deeds by bringing happiness and pleasure to the hearts of other Muslims, by devoting for the sake of Allah SWT. Most importantly, it’s the spirit of thanksgiving that make the Muslim Umma stronger all over the globe for the accomplishment of an act of dedication and submission to the total will of Allah, the Almighty.

Spiritual achievement of Faithful Citizens’ By: Gulshan Aalani The true Muslims are proving to be the faithful citizens of the Spiritual world by fasting in the Sacred month of Ramadaan fulfilling GOD’S command, achieving the most difficult task with a smile and satisfaction. With such physical and spiritual actions proving the faithfulness to the One Creator-GOD and ready to celebrate ‘EID’ for such great achievement. Such achievement is different than the achievement described by President Obama for the LGBTQ group. The most important true spiritual achievement can only be obtained by being a good citizen of the 2 worlds: Law abiding Citizen of the Spiritual world is as important as being the law abiding citizen following the Law of the land.
Every world Gov. is expecting its citizens to be the law abiding and follow all the constitutional rules and regulations given in the Blue print. The minute we violate any ‘Legal Signs’, we get caught by the watchful eyes of the Police Officers and we earn the punishment whether in a form of a Ticket or the Jail time. None of our excuses could save us from the punishment of violating the law of the land. Similarly, one gets the violation ticket for violating the Divine Law given by Allah-Creator, GOD of the Bible and Prophets Adam (AS), Noah (AS) Israel-Jacob (AS) Moses (AS) Messiah Jesus (AS), Messenger Muhammad (SAWS), all the Angels and Jinns. Consequently, one can only qualify to be the Citizen of the Spiritual world by being obedient servant of the Higher Power, Supreme-Being and worships HIM only not the human gods, and become fully aware of the Divine warnings, following HIS rules and understand the law of ‘Forbidden Tree’ and the true concept of religions. There are 2 kinds of religions: one is the divinely given Scriptural religion and the other is the man-made religion without any substance or true merits that misguides the mankind towards the evil Spirit-Dajjal-anti-Christanti-Islam, the false god with its religious deception, and distort-
ed ideological idea of religion, preaching Pluralism, to throw away the Holy Scriptures mesmerizing the innocents with his surface glitter, misleading them against the true Creator-GOD and Islam the divine religion of Prophet Abraham (AS). Rejecting Islam-submission to real GOD is anti-GOD, and denying to board the Noah’s Ark; committing an unforgivable sin a serious offense that disqualifies one to use the trade marks titles of ‘Islam’ and ‘Muslim’ for its non-Scriptural religion (Cult). Faith and spirituality are the cornerstones of the Divine Religions wherein the spirituality and practicability goes hand in hand that can only come through observing the divine commandments. Discard or replace the divine commandments by the man-made religious law would definitely lead to the wrong disastrous path of dooms day. Real worshiping means desisting from violating the law of GOD out of HIS love and fear and pursuing the activities that pleases the Creator and not the human gods. The very first obligation is to establish the worship of Allah-Creator and to make covenant with HIM, pray to HIM directly on HIS direct line, as there is none between HIM and HIS worshipers. HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL

The Sindh government issued a muchawaited notification in the early hours of Thursday morning, extending the special policing powers assigned to Rangers in the province for a month, after a high-level meeting between senior officials at the CM House. Special policing powers assigned to Rangers in the province, which have in the past been extended every few months via orders from the provincial government, had expired on Wednesday at midnight – July 8, 2015. Before the issuance of an official notification by the Sindh government in this regard, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah held a meeting with Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to discuss the issue of Rangers’ special powers in Sindh. It had also been reported on local media that former president and PPP co-chairperson Asif Zardari talked to Qaim Ali Shah via telephone from Dubai earlier on Wednesday, asking him to expedite the process to issue the notification seeking extension in the duration of Rangers’ policing powers in Sindh. While the Sindh government has been granting extensions in the duration of Rangers’ policing powers via notifications from the home department every three months since 2010, this time around a standoff between the paramilitary force and the Sindh government had led the chief minister to mull other options. In statements over the past two days, Qaim Ali Shah stressed that following the passage of the 18th Amendment, the matter of extension was to be decided
by the provincial legislature, giving rise to uncertainty on what course of action, if any, will be taken to continue the paramilitary force’s operations in Sindh. Earlier on Wednesday, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the federal government was hopeful it will receive the Sindh government’s requisition seeking extension in the duration of Rangers policing powers in the province. Addressing a press conference hours before the expiry of a deadline in the special powers assigned to Rangers in Sindh, Nisar said the Centre had been communicating with the provincial government on the issue of extension in Rangers’ operational powers. Nisar said there had been doubts on whether the provincial government will extend the duration of Rangers’ powers this time around. “In case they did not extend the duration, we [federal government] had decided to extend the force’s powers through a notification for 24 hours so that they perform security duties for Youm-i-Ali.” But the interior minister said he had talked to the Sindh chief minister a while ago and an extension notification for Rangers from the Sindh government was expected till midnight today (Wednesday). Nisar lamented the criticism levelled against the force. “Rangers are being targeted and criticised despite their tremendous efforts.” He added that Rangers personnel had risked their lives to secure Karachi. “It is a paramilitary force equipped and trained to fight enemies. When they are deployed to secure cities they go over and above their call of duty.” He termed political criticism of the Sindh Rangers “unacceptable,” saying the force does not take any action at the behest of any political party. Report: Gaza health sector critically ill after war
One year after violence tore through the Gaza Strip in the summer war of 2014, Palestinian human rights groups have released a report detailing the damage to Gaza’s health sector, saying that its effect will last well beyond the ceasefire. In the report “No More Impunity: Gaza’s Health Sector Under Attack”, researchers investigated attacks by the Israeli military on ambulances, hospitals, and healthcare workers in Gaza. According to the report, these attacks crippled the health sector’s ability to dispense care to civilians during the 50-day war. Drawing on testimonies and on-site evidence, the report estimates that 511 of the 2,217 Palestinians killed in the war were blocked from seeking care and ambulance access. During the war, Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta was volunteering at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, where each day was another challenge against the physical limitations of resources and space. As his burn unit stretched to accommodate the hundreds of injured spilling into the hospital - sometimes over the course of only a few hours - Abu Sitta noticed a shift in his patients’ behaviour that made his job all the more difficult: Patients were no longer accepting ambulance rides. “They started refusing to get in [to ambulances],” said Abu Sitta. “And they started insisting on being brought by car by their families.” During the Israeli assault on Gaza, 45 ambulances were targeted by the Israeli military, causing injuries and fatalities among paramedic crews rushing to the scenes of destruction. According to Abu Sitta, injured civilians soon became reluctant to accept rides because they believed that in ambulances, “their chances of making it safely to the hospital were diminished greatly”. Attacks on ambulances are among the several cases outlined in the recently released report, which states that 15 hospitals and 43 clinics in Gaza were also attacked. Some suffered minor damage, while others were gutted. These attacks, levelled against the very sector working to mitigate the war’s impact on civilians, eroded health workers’ ability to offer care, and patients’ opportunities to receive it, said Abu Sitta, who is now the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at American University of Beirut. The destruction of one hospital, al-Wafa, has left Gaza with no rehabilitation centre and 1,000 disabled children without care. “There was increasing scope and ferocity of attacks against the health sector,” said Abu Sitta. “This aimed to degrade the capacity of the health sector during the attacks.” Though coordinates of the ambulances’ movements were shared with the Israeli military to prevent attacks and allow mobility, health workers in Gaza note that these attacks not only continued, but also reported similar actions carried out by Israel during the conflicts of 2008-09 and 2012. “During the attacks of 2014, we saw several facilities that were damaged in previous attacks, just get [completely] destroyed,” said Bob Jones, the campaigns and research officer at Medical Aid for Palestinians, a group that aided in compiling the report. “We saw continuing attacks on ambulances and medical personnel,” Jones told Al Jazeera. Abu Sitta echoed the sentiment, claiming that a lack of accountability for these actions only increases their likelihood of happening again. “In 2008, in al-Aqsa
hospital, a missile hit the car park. In 2014, a missile went through the operating room and killed some of the staff and the patients,” he said. “I think impunity allows both institutions and individuals to feel they are above international law,” he added. The report highlighted the case of a seven-year-old boy named Bader, who was wounded by shrapnel in a bombardment of the neighbourhood of Khuzaa. Efforts to get Bader to healthcare professionals were frustrated by successive obstructions; first, ambulances were not permitted to reach the site of the attack until almost four hours after Bader was injured. On the way to the hospital, Bader and the paramedic crew were then held for 20 minutes at a checkpoint for no given reason. Less than five hours after he was wounded, Bader died in the ambulance carrying him to al-Shifa hospital. Since targeting healthcare workers and facilities during wartime are against international law, both sides took preventive measures to reduce the possibility; ambulance coordinates were shared, and warning systems established so that Gaza hospitals could be notified before strikes. However, Jones notes that these measures often fell short and have since been called out by humanitarian and human rights groups as being insufficient. He added that sometimes hospitals were only given 15 minutes to evacuate - an impossible feat when taking into account debilitating injuries, overworked staff and the technical entanglements of monitors and ventilators. He also noted that hospital directors would receive frequent warnings, only to be followed by no attacks. “If there is a sense that a warning can be given and then you have to evacuate a whole hospital, which is a massive undertaking, and then there isn’t an attack anyway, there is a high risk that hospitals would stop evacuating,” he added. According to both Jones and Abu Sitta, these types of attacks have had a disproportionate effect on children in Gaza. The health sector’s deterioration, as well as the blockade currently stemming the arrival of resources and personnel into the Strip, make it difficult to care for long-term patients recovering from injuries. The impact will extend across generations. “You had children who had massive burns and were in a unit, who were the sole survivors of their families,” said Abu Sitta. “One of the most devastating things was to deal with children who will be left with a certain amount of disability, knowing there won’t be anyone to look after them.” Jones and Abu Sitta were recently in Geneva, Switzerland, to present the report’s findings to the UN Human Rights Council and call for the international community to hold Israel to account. On Friday, European states gave unanimous support in a vote to further the investigations launched by the Commission of Inquiry. According to Jones, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is expected to report on the implementation of recommendations in the commission’s report, and in the 2009 UN Fact-Finding Mission, at the March 2016 session of the Human Rights Council. “Our main message here is to ask for accountability. A thorough investigation is needed to prevent another round of attacks which would decimate Gaza’s health sector further,” Jones said. Source: Al-Jazeera
Myanmar: Still locking up political prisoners
Hundreds of demonstrators, including Buddhist monks, have marched in Yangon against what they say is “bullying” by the international community about Myanmar’s stance on the Rohingya ethnic minority group. Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar in recent months claiming fear of persecution, and many are still languishing at sea as they wait to seek asylum in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. A spokeswoman for Wednesday’s protest, held by nationalist and religious groups, insisted the humanitarian crisis was not caused by Myanmar. “These people are not from Myanmar,” Sandy Thin Mar Oo said, yelling through a loudspeaker to the protesters who gathered before marching the streets. In an impassioned speech, she called for the United Nations and the international community to stop blaming Myanmar as the sole perpetrators of the unfolding human tragedy. “Don’t blame Myanmar alone,” she said, encouraging the crowd to yell slogans after her. “Don’t bully Myanmar.” Human rights groups and the UN have warned of a spiralling humanitarian crisis and have urged Myanmar to provide better conditions for the Rohingya, who are considered by the Myanmar government as illegal migrants from Bangladesh. About 400 people, including 40 monks, gathered to show their support for the anti-Rohingya campaign on Wednesday. Protesters donned T-shirts emblazoned with the captions, “Boat people are not from Myanmar” and “Myanmar should not take the blame for boat people problem”. U Win Hlan Tha, a monk
who attended the rally, said he wanted to show his support of “real” Myanmar people. “These people are not really us and the international media has got it all wrong,” he said. “What they have to understand is that we are never going to let them in because they have never been one of us.” Bystanders watched quietly as protesters led a short march through a section of a Yangon suburb where many Muslim residents reside. Asked what they thought of the campaign, most declined to comment. But others said they fully supported the protesters and their message to the international community. “We had never even heard of the word ‘Rohingya’ before the riots in Sittwe in 2012,” said one bystander who declined to be named. “For once, I don’t think the government is lying to Myanmar people,” he said. Religious tensions are simmering in Myanmar, where at least 240 people have been killed since communal conflict was sparked between Muslim and Buddhist groups in 2012. Asia director of Human Rights Watch, Brad Adams, said neighbouring ASEAN countries needed to do more for the Rohingya, who had fallen prey to human traffickers because of their desperate situation in Myanmar. “Just as important, there will be no long-term solution unless [Myanmar] ends its rights-abusing and discriminatory policies toward the Rohinga and joins other countries in taking action against smugglers and traffickers who abuse and prey on them,” he added. Greece has until Sunday to negotiate a new deal with its current international creditors in order to prevent economic collapse, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said last Tuesday. It was another day of confusion and rushed meetings in Brussels as world leaders combined efforts to prevent Greece from falling off an economic cliff. In Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama worked the phones, calling both Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Merkel, coaxing both sides to work out a deal so that Greece could return to growth. But Merkel, at EU headquarters in Brussels for yet another last-minute summit on the Greek crisis, did not sound overly optimistic. She said Greece would present a new, detailed reform and loan proposal by Thursday that would span the next few years. From there, further negotiations can last until Sunday. After the decisive No vote in the July 5 referendum, she said the original proposal for Greece is clearly dead and time is running out before Greek banks run out of money. “The situation has worsened,” Merkel said of Greece’s financial situation. Merkel announced there would be a European Union summit of all 28 members on Sunday to discuss Greece. She urged all EU leaders to attend the meeting. “We have only a few days left to find a solution,” she said late Tuesday at a press conference. European Council President Donald Tusk echoed Merkel. He said all sides will be responsible if they fail to find an agreement, which could lead to the Greek bankruptcy. Greece’s second bailout program for $340 billion ended last Tuesday. It is seeking a new deal that includes debt relief; the country of 11 million is drowning under high unemployment and an inability to pay back creditors. Greece owes the European Central Bank $4.5 billion by July 20. The euro group of finance ministers had expected to receive a new proposal from Greece on Tuesday. Instead, newly appointed Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos
spoke to the ministers and promised to send a letter outlining Greece’s wishes. As Tsakalotos left the summit, he added there was “political will” for Greece to remain in the eurozone. Europe, while agreeing to keep Greece’s line of liquidity open, has so far refused to raise it as there is no agreement in place between Greece and its creditors — the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission. Greek banks are to remain shut for the time being and withdrawals at ATMs have been capped at $84 a day in order to stop citizens from draining their bank accounts. Greeks fear their accounts could be shaved in order to keep the country afloat — just like what happened in Cyprus in 2013. While Greece’s economy is small, about the size of Connecticut’s, the fear is that if the country goes bankrupt it will signal non-confidence in the euro. It is to everybody’s advantage to solve this situation as soon as possible in order to restore liquidity to the banking system, said Harry Konstantinidis, assistant professor of economics at Boston’s University of Massachusetts. “The Greek government went with proposals. It is just the proposals were not what the creditors wanted to hear,” Konstantinidis said. “My sense is that any proposal that comes from Greece will have debt relief in the centre. Whether this is something or not the creditors want to discuss is another situation.” The ball is now with the euro group’s court, he said. “It is time for France, it is time for Italy, it is time for European social democracy to step up to the plate and decide what type of a eurozone it wants,” he said. France wants Greece to remain in the eurozone but it is now up to the Greeks to find the answer, added French President François Hollande in a press briefing after the summit. “We can no longer lose time,” he added. Thoughts on the Eid Day
By: A K M Mohiuddin It’s Eid Day at the end of the month-long fasting and my heart is sore. I think of the Muslims all over the world and I find little comfort. I think of the Shia-Sunni divide profusely bleeding the ummah every moment. I shudder at the thought that some groups on both sides in Pakistan or elsewhere might not hesitate to shed each others’ blood even on this day of joy and festivity. I think of those rulers in the heartland of Islam, Arabia, who would rather cooperate with Israel than endure the thought of the Muslims surviving and thriving. I cannot forget how this ShiaSunni divide has been exploited by Islam’s common enemies for centuries and has facilitated their conquest and domination of the Muslims, and continues to do so today. On this Eid Day I sit down alone and lament the blindness and the perversion of our hearts that this Shia-Sunni divide has caused. I think of the plight of the Muslim lands Palestine, Kashmir, Chechnya, Mindanao, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen, ravaged by internal strife and humiliated by foreign occupation and domination, the killing fields that these places have become. Killing in the Muslim lands has become an easy sport. I think of the fear, insecurity, misery, humiliation and helplessness of so many of my brothers and sisters, too many to count. I think of the long dark night in their lives with no sign of an approaching morning. I think of the beleaguered Muslim masses around the world. The Muslim societies in Muslim lands are no longer a unified whole; they are torn up into conflicting segments in which the masses always lose. The ruling elite in these lands have a tenuous connection with Islam and stand as a class apart only to serve themselves. Their insensitivity
and heartlessness to those they rule over is mind-numbing. Likewise, Muslims living outside the Muslim world have a precarious existence and are under constant threat. At every step they need to prove themselves as sufficiently human, sufficiently American or European or whatever; they are regarded with suspicion, ridicule and even outright hostility. I think of my brothers and sisters in so many places of the world in staggering poverty and suffering one natural calamity after another. I see my millions of flood-affected brothers and sisters in Pakistan, mostly poor, pitifully neglected by successive governments and by the rich and powerful in their communities who exploit them but refuse to stand by them in their distress. Where are Muslims who are humble in power and generous in wealth, as Islam teaches? I think of the waste and ostentation that go on all year round, culminating in Ramadan and on the Eid Day, even when neighbours are suffering unspeakably. I think of the breed of politicians in the Muslim lands who ferociously compete with each other to lead the Muslims. Barring a few exceptions here and there, they range from insane to clownish. They display their talent best in groveling at the feet of their foreign masters while creating division and strife at home. They beg without shame from their foreign masters only to fatten themselves and their cronies. They utterly lack any sense of self-respect and are incapable of behaving in a dignified manner. In their own base interest they mortgage the fate of the millions of their fellow Muslims. They lead only to destroy. I think of the way Muslim rulers in the oil rich states squander their wealth in useless and wasteful projects. I grieve at the inhuman treatment millions of desperate expatriate Muslim workers re-
ceive at the hands of many Muslim governments. I think of the government offices that will open soon after the Eid vacation. I will not speak of the incompetence and corruption in these places. I only shudder to think of the indignity and humiliation an ordinary Muslim is meted out by the people sitting in chairs in these places. An encounter with them is enough to take away one’s joy of living. I miss the loss of community, its integrity and cohesion that Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) and His noble Messenger (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) repeatedly enjoin on Muslims. Muslims oppress other Muslims without hesitation, inflict pain on each other, make each other’s burdens heavier with no feeling of shame or remorse. Muslims go hungry in the midst of plenty and waste, get sick without succor, cry bitterly and in vain for redress and justice. I find Muslims today living side by side without even being aware of each others’ existence. We pray together in the masjid, but have no real communion with one another. I think of the Muslim people split up and caged into national entities, even so much so that at Hajj they are deprived of any opportunity to come close to each other because they are consigned to enclaves by nationality. I smell the air in which the concept of the ummah has been given a foul odor and has become dangerous to breathe in. It has become a crime to think of oneself as an integral part of a unified body of Muslims, universal and timeless. I miss the ulema who are supposed to be the heirs of our noble Prophet Muhammad (saws) in all the aspects of his life and life’s work. I long to see a body of the ulema who
understand Islam, live by it, understand their own people and their tradition and know the contemporary world for what it is. I long to see them breaking out of their isolation in their own regional confines and forming a close bond with the ulema in all parts of the Muslim world, sit together and discuss issues and concerns that need to be addressed untidily and firmly. I long to see them, and them alone, lead the Muslims. Muslim masses are hungry for leadership that does not come. There are many individuals and groups active in Islamic work, but there are not many who present Islam in its entirety, faithfully and truly. It is as if we are engaged in creating an Islam of our own inclinations, as if we are not comfortable with Islam as it is. I remember what Allah (SWT) has called the Muslims, the best ummah raised for mankind (Quran 3:110). Can we make any claim to being the best of anything? This Eid Day will pass and another day will begin, and thus another week, month and year. On this auspicious day we need to examine ourselves and ask what groundwork we have done for that noble role during the month of Ramadan that we have just bidden farewell to. ***** A. K. M. Vancouver council ponders drastic measure in battle against homelessness
x Street homelessness in Vancouver has gone down by 10 per cent since last year and Vancouver council is considering more steps to improve the situation, but Mayor Gregor Robertson’s promise to house everyone in the city remains just a dream. Among the moves being considered by council is bumping the fee for removing a room from single-residency accommodation (SRA) from $15,000 to a staggering $125,000 per room. Robertson campaigned in 2008 on a promise to end homelessness by the spring of 2015, but conceded earlier this year the city was unable to meet that target. “The City has done everything in our power to make a difference and will continue to do so,” Robertson in said a release Tuesday. “Despite the progress we have made in adding new units of permanent and interim housing and shelter beds, without further senior govern-
ment support we can only do so much.” Information from the 2015 Report on Homelessness showed 488 homeless people remain unsheltered, a decline in street homelessness of 10 per cent. But those people remained out on the street despite the opening of 615 net new permanent and interim/supportive housing units over the last year that housed 458 street/sheltered homeless. The March 24 homeless count showed a total of 1,746 homeless people in Vancouver, with 1,258 sheltered and the remaining 488 street homeless. In 2014 there were 1,803 homeless people, with 1,267 sheltered and 536 street homeless. About 50 per cent of the homeless had been in that category for less than a year. To try improve the situation, council is considering changes to bylaws around single-room accommodation hotels and will listen to speakers on the topic July 22. SRAs often provide shelter as a last resort for people in vulnerable situations, but they’re also the target of developers, which is why there is consideration of hefty new conversion fees. Also being contemplated are such steps as requiring a landlord to allow a tenant to return to a renovated room while paying the same rent as before, and developing a grant/loan to support the improvement of private single-resident occupancy facilities. BC Fire: Christy...... Continued from Page 1 firefighters in B.C. are already working, and reinforcements have been brought in from Ontario and requested from Australia and New Zealand. B.C. has more than burned through its entire wildfire budget for the year, but the province has statutory access to contingency funding. “We will spend what we need,” said Clark. “If more resources are required we will get them.” There were 31 new fires in B.C. yesterday and 189 active fires throughout B.C. as of noon Wednesday. Clark also offered condolences to the family of John Phare, a faller killed fighting a fire near Sechelt on Sunday, and praised the work of the more than 1,600 firefighters working in the province right now. “It’s dangerous work and we should all be grateful,” she said. Hottest, driest spell since 2003 Pemberton, located 67 kilometres east of the Elaho fire, is getting ready for the Pemberton Music Festival, which is scheduled to run from July 16 to 19. Organizers and village officials are keeping an eye on at least two adjacent fires, in the hope conditions don’t turn too dangerous for the popular outdoor concert. The Boulder Creek fire north of Pemberton, B.C., is 5,000 hectares in size
and growing. (B.C. Wildfire Management Branch) The Elaho fire, sparked by lightning June 14, is estimated to have covered 20,000 hectares. Further north theBoulder Creek fire, which has reached 5,000 hectares in size and is zero per cent contained, has triggered an evacuation order. They are just two of more than 180 fires burning in the hazy province, which is in the midst of its hottest, driest spell since 2003. The B.C. Wildfire Service predicts 30 new wildfires will erupt daily, based on the tinder dry conditions. Campfire bans are in effect across B.C., including in parts of the dampest regions along the West Coast, dubbed “the fog zone,” starting at noon on Wednesday. Source: files from The Canadian Press
Iran nuclear talks to continue until July 10
Talks between Iran and Western powers to find a nuclear deal will continue until July 10, the US State Department has announced. “To allow for the additional time to negotiate, we are taking the necessary technical steps for the measures of the Joint Point of Action to remain in place through July 10,” US State Deparment spokesman Marie Harf said on Tuesday. Harf said “substantial progress in every area” had been made, but negotiators need time to work on the “highly technical and high stakes” details of the agreement. “We’re frankly more concerned about the quality of the deal than we are about the clock,” she said. The US statement comes as European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini also said that negotiators “are continuing the talks for the next couple of days” beyond the July 7 deadline. “This does not mean we are extending our deadline. I told you one week ago more or less, we are interpreting in a flexible way our deadline, which means that we are taking the time, the days we still need, to finalise the agreement,” she said. Foreign ministers and officials from Iran and members of the P5+1 group - comprising Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US - are gathered in Vienna to try to strike a deal with Iran. Last week both sides effectively gave themselves until July 7 to finalise a deal ending a 13year standoff by extending the terms of a November 2013 interim deal to that date. An Iranian official previously told reporters that: “Even if we pass July 9, that will not be the end of the world, there will be another period for us to watch.” A dispute over UN sanctions on Iran’s ballistic missile programme, as well as a broader arms embargo, are said to be among
the main issues holding up the agreement before this latest self-imposed deadline. “The Iranians want the ballistic missile sanctions lifted. They say there is no reason to connect it with the nuclear issue, a view that is difficult to accept,” one Western official told the Reuters news agency on Monday. “There’s no appetite for that on our part.” Separately, a senior Iranian official speaking on condition of anonymity told reporters in the Austrian capital that Tehran wanted a UN arms embargo terminated as well. Having agreed to an interim deal in November 2013 following the election of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Iran and the P5+1 missed a July 2014 deadline to get a lasting deal, and then again last November. In April, several days late, they managed to agree on a framework accord. A target date of finalising this by June 30 was pushed back to July 7. But by late Monday, it became clear there was still no light at the end of the tunnel despite progress in tidying up some of the details in what will be a complex and contentious agreement. John Kerry, the US secretary of state, is under pressure to nail down the deal by Thursday in order to send it to the Republican-controlled US Congress for a 30-day review. Under a new law, if the deal is reached after July 9, US legislators will have 60 days to vote on it, giving opponents who think the deal is too weak more chances to try to scupper the accord. Building on the April framework, the P5+1 powers want Iran to sharply curb its nuclear programme to make any push to acquire an atomic bomb all but impossible, in return for sanctions relief. Iran denies wanting nuclear weapons, saying its activities are purely for peaceful purposes. Source: Al-Jazeera

F A I T H Narrator AbuHurayrah Sahih Muslim hadith_No 2378 Allah’s Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) said: Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days.
Maximize the last 10 days of Ramadan By: Abdul Malik Mujahid Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) is described in the Quran as, “better than a thousand months” (97:3). Any action done on this night such as reciting the Quran, remembering Allah, etc. is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Qadr. Allah’s Messenger used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.” (Muslim). Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, related that the Prophet said: Look for Laylatul Qadr on an odd-numbered night during the last ten nights of Ramadan (Bukhari). The Prophet said: “Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim recorded from Abu Huraira). Here are some tips of things we can do on the Night of Power and the time before and after it. 1. Take a vacation for Allah. We take a break from our jobs for almost everything in life. Why not this time to focus on worshiping and thanking our Creator. If this is not possible at least take a few days off if you can. This can make it easier to stay awake at night to do extra Ibadah, not having to worry about getting to work the next day. It will also facilitate doing Itikaf. 2. Do I’tikaf. It was a practice of the Prophet to spend the last ten days and nights of Ramadan in the masjid for I’tikaf. Those in I’tikaf stay in the masjid all this time, performing various forms of zikr (the remembrance of Allah), like doing extra Salat, recitation and study of the Quran. They do not go outside the masjid except in case of emergencies, therefore, they sleep in the masjid. Their families or the masjid administration takes care of their food needs. I’tikaf of a shorter period of time, like one night, a day or a couple of days is encouraged as well. 3. Make this special Dua. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’ “(Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi). The transliteration of this Dua is “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee” 4. Recite the Quran. Perhaps you can choose Surahs or passages from the Quran, which you have heard in Tarawih this past Ramadan to recite. If you attend a class where the recitation of the Quran is taught, this is a great time to put your knowledge into practice. 5. Reflect on the meaning of the Quran. Choose the latest Surah or Surahs you’ve heard in Tarawih and read their translation and Tafseer. Then think deeply about their meaning and how it affects you on a personal level. 6. Get your sins wiped out. Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger said: Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul
Qadr while nourishing his faith with selfevaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven. [Bukhari and Muslim). Don’t just pray using the shorter Surahs that you know. Try to make your prayers longer, deeper and meaningful. If you are familiar with longer Surahs, read the translation and explanation and then pray reciting these Surahs, carefully reflecting on the meaning while you pray. Even if you are only familiar with the shorter Surahs, read the translation and explanation beforehand, and then pray reflecting on the message of the Surahs. This is a good way to develop the habit of concentration, even in regular prayers, where many of us tend to be fidgety and/or easily distracted. 7. Make a personal Dua list. Ask yourself what you really want from Allah. Make a list of each and everything, no matter how small or how big it is, whether it deals with this world or not. Allah loves to hear from us. Once this list is ready, you can do three things: Ask Allah to give you those things Think about what actions you have taken to get those things Develop a work plan to get those things in future. 8. Evaluate yourself. Ask yourself those questions that need to be asked. Do an evaluation of where you are and where you are going. Let this evaluation lead you to feel happiness for the good you have done and remorse for the bad you have done. This latter feeling should make it easier to seek Allah’s sincere forgiveness when making the Dua mentioned in tip number one above. 9. Make long, sincere and deep Duas One of the best times to do this is during the last part of the night. Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the Prophet said: When the last one-third of the night remains, our Lord, the Glorious One descends towards
the heaven of the earth and proclaims: Who is that who supplicates for Me, and I grant his supplication? Who is that who begs Me for anything and I grant it to him? And who is that who seeks My forgiveness, and I forgive him? (Bukhari, Muslim). That means for instance, waking up one hour before Suhoor time to ask Allah for anything and everything you want that is Halal. This can be done using the Duas of the Sunnah, but also Dua in your own language, with sincerity and conviction. 10. Memorize a different Dua every night They don’t have to be long. They can be just one line. And be sure to know what they mean generally at least, even if you don’t know the exact translation in English. You can put them on index cards (or and keep them with you during the day, glancing at them during work, while driving, waiting in line, etc.) Then practice them at night in prayer. 11. Have Iftar with the family If you’ve spent Iftar time on weekdays in your cubicle at work alone with a couple of dates, now is the last few days you’ll have this Ramadan to spend with your family. Use it wisely. 12. Take the family to Tarawih Have your spouse and kids missed Tarawih most of Ramadan because you weren’t there to drive them to the Masjid, which is too far away to walk to? If so, do all of yourselves a favour and bring everyone for Tarawih in these last ten nights. 13. Attend the Dua after the completion of Quran recitation Almost all Masjids where the Imam aims
to finish an entire reading of the Quran in Tarawih prayers in Ramadan will be completing their recitation in these last ten nights. They may try to end on one of the odd nights and read the Dua at the end of a reading of the Quran. Attend this particular night’s Tarawih prayer with your family. See if you can attend different Masjids’ Tarawih prayers the night they finish reading the Quran. 14. Finish reading a book on the Prophet Read about the Prophet’s life, which can increase your love for him and Islam by seeing how much he struggled for Allah’s sake. It may inspire you to push yourself even harder during these last ten nights. This community is built on sacrifice. 15. Plan for the next year Once you’ve done a self-evaluation, you can plan on where you want to go, at least in the next 12 months. Laylatul Qadr is a great night to be thinking about this (without taking away from your worship), since you’ll Insha Allah, be in a more contemplative state. You may choose to dedicate one night of power for evaluation and one night for planning for the next year. 16. To do list for the Night of Power Make a to do checklist for each Night of Power. This should define how you would like your night, the one better than a thousand months, to be used. Pick things from this list and define the sequence you would like to do things in. This will help you avoid wasting your time in unproductive chats which common in the festive atmosphere of Masjids at the Night of Power. Es s ence of Eid The celebration of Eid ul-Fitr culminates a month of fasting wherein the faithful have spent their time praying and beseeching God for forgiveness and mercy. For many, Ramadan was not just an abstention from food and drink. Rather, it was an exercise in patience and discipline. Eid is the celebration for those who fasted and obeyed God’s rules and teachings. It is for those who spent the month of Ramadan in complete devotion to Allah. Eid is a time when the entire Muslim community comes together to share in each others joy and blessings and also to lessen the burden of those who may be suffering. It is preceded by people shopping and looking around for gifts for their near and dear ones. It is a time when the bright lights from homes and shops illuminates our life. We use see this day and the following days to spread happiness and social harmony by visiting our friends and relatives. Gifts are exchanged during Eid by young and old alike. We also visit the elderly and the sick. Eid is a time where all kinds or festivities prevail. Many of us gormandize to make up for “lost food” during the month of Ramadan. However, with all the going around we some time forget our lesser privileged brethren. We forget that there are many out there who have nothing to celebrate. There are those among our brothers and sisters for whom Eid day is just another ordinary day. There are those who open their cupboards on Eid day and find them bare. There are those who in hospitals
a lonely day who will go through a bleak and with no one visiting them. Friendless, deprived of company, they will have no one to offer solace or comfort. Let us therefore see to it that our deprived brethren welcome the day of Eid with warmth and hope. As we buy gifts and clothes for our children, let us earmark a special sum for those who cannot afford to buy. Also we should instill in our children a sense of compassion so that when they buy something they will also think of their unfortunate brethren. Let us teach them the art of giving. We should let them know that there are millions of children in; war torn areas of Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria, Kashmir and Chechnya, the poor and downtrodden areas of Africa, Asia and South America, and even in the forgotten ghettos of Europe and North America who do not have the basic necessities to make this day a different day. We cannot divest ourselves from the misery of others. We cannot shrug it off saying that it does not concern us. To do this would be an injustice to humanity. The Quran (5:8) tells us ... Be just: that is next to piety. Many of us donate money to charity and fulfill our religious duty. However, if we actually meet the recipients of our charity the perception of charity changes. There is a feeling of belonging when the recipient and giver meet. Islamic ideology teaches us to be kind and compassionate. Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that “I and the provider of the orphan will be together.” And what greater prize is there for anyone of us than to be around our beloved prophet. All we need for that is compassion, sincerity and a feeling of brotherhood and understanding. And that will decide the quality of our life on earth and the hereafter. Life and Times of Hazrat Ali R.A.
Amongst the descendants of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S., Hazrat Ali R.A. belonged to the line of Quraish. He was the son of Abu Talib r.a., son of Abdul Muttalib of the distinguished tribe of Bani Hashim. It was his father Abu Talib who had nourished and brought up the Prophet S.A.W. His mother Fatima bint-e Asad was also a noble lady belonging to the tribe of Bani Hashim whom the Prophet S.A.W. regarded as his own mother. When the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), was thirty years old, Ali R.A. was born on 13th of Rajab. His parents were very happy on his birth but it was Prophet Muhammad (SAW). who was most particularly pleased to see the baby. The responsibility for bringing him up devolved directly on Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa
S.A.W. Hazrat Ali R.A. was ten years old when Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa was formally called upon to convey the divine message. This is called Besat. Prophet Muhammad (SAW), had embarked upon a mission which was against the trend of the times, the prevailing environment, the practice of the entire city and of his own people and tribe. No one was prepared to extend a helping hand and cooperate with him. It was Ali R.A. who was foremost in testifying the claim of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and in reposing full faith in his mission. The other personality was that of Hazrat Khadijatul Kubra who acquired the honour of precedence in embracing Islam among the women. After some time Abu Talib left this world. The demise of his loving uncle broke the Prophet S.A.W’s heart. He made up his mind to migrate to Madinah. Thereupon the enemies unanimously decided to surround the house of the Prophet S.A.W’s at night and finally kill him. The Prophet S.A.W’s coming to know of it, called his cousin Ali R.A and told him about it saying, “My life can be saved if you sleep on my bed tonight covered with my mantle while I leave Makkah incognito.” Had it been some body else this news would have terrified him. But Ali R.A. expressed his gratitude to God that the life of the Prophet S.A.W’s. will be saved through him. Accordingly at night
the Prophet S.A.W’left Makkah for Madinah and Ali ibne Abi Talib slept on his bed. All around the house blood thirsty enemies with drawn swords and spears were just waiting for the break of dawn to break into the house and kill the Prophet S.A.W’s. In the mean time Ali R.A. was resting peacefully and quietly on the bed and did not at all think of the lurking danger to his life. The enemies discovered in the morning that the person resting on the bed was Ali R.A. and not Muhammad S.A.W . The loyalty, courage and boldness with which Ali R.A. discharged his responsibilities is an example in itself. The first thing that the Prophet S.A.W did on his arrival in Madinah was to solemnize the marriage of his daughter, Fatima Zahra with Ali R.A.. The Prophet s.a. deeply loved his daughter and had so much respect for her that whenever she came to him he used to stand up in reverence. It was in the first year of Hijrah when the Prophet s.a. chose Ali R.A. for this honour. The wedding rites were performed with utmost simplicity. The daughter of the Prophet s.a. was married without any dowry from the Prophet S.A.W. It was the amount of her Mahar (dower) offered by Ali R.A. from which some household articles were purchased and given to Fatima. Later, Ali R.A. became the caliph. During his caliphate of nearly four years and nine months, Ali R.A. followed the way of the Prophet (saw)
and gave his caliphate the form of a spiritual movement and renewal and began many different types of reforms. Alas, this protagonist of peace, equality and Islamic values could not escape the malicious designs of the worldly people. In the morning of 19 of the month of Ramazan 40 A.H.while offering prayers in the mosque he was fatally wounded by a sword dipped in poison. His mercifulness, kindness and regard for equality of all human beings was such that when his assassin was brought before him with a pale face and tears rolling down his eyes, he was touched with compassion even for him and addressing his two son, Imam Hasan and Imam Husain said: “He is your prisoner. Do not treat him harshly. Give him the food that you yourself eat. If I recover, it will be upto me to punish him or to forgive him. But if I do not survive and you decide to avenge his crime, then strike him with sword only once as he had struck me once and in no case his hands or legs or any other part of his body should be cut off as it is against the teachings of Islam.” Ali R.A. spent two restless days on his sick bed in extreme pain and distress. Eventually the poison spread all over the body and he breathed his last on 21 of Ramazan at the time of morning prayer. Hasan R.A. and Husain R.A. performed the funeral rites and that prince of humanity was buried at Najaf at the back of the city of Kufa.

Eid Ul-Fitr : How Countries Around the World Celebrate Eid
Every very festival is steeped in age-old traditions that embrace a new shade as you walk across geographical boundaries. Eid-Al-Fitr, also known as the Sugar Feast, brings the month-long Ramzan fasts to an end. The celebrations commence with great gusto after the first sighting of the new moon and are known to last for about three-four days. ‘Eid’ is an Arabic word for festivity and ‘fitr’ means breaking the fast. While traditions may vary, food is central to almost every celebration in the form of grand family feasts. Here’s how countries across the globe ring in Eid festivities differently, yet with the same spirit. Egypt The celebrations last for four days and unlike
In some areas, it is a common tradition that people will put large rugs on one of main streets of their neighbourhood and each household shares their meals with the others. India The night before Eid is called ‘Chaand Raat’. Women often apply henna on their hands and feet. Elders distribute gifts, money or sweets which are popularly known as Eidi. Diverse delights like Seviyan (vermicelli pudding), Hyderabadi Haleem (mutton stew), Kebabs and Nihaari Gosht are savoured. Iraq Dates are given utmost significance and a dish called Klaicha must be prepared by every household. Klaicha is a rose-scented cookie filled with dates and nuts. http://food.ndtv.com/

Miracle Media has observed that at many Fundraising Dinners, many people raise their hands to declare pledges of thousands of dollars in donation with their names and businesses. But unfortunately, after the many visits for collection of their committed pledges, the committee encounters lean excuses and is given a very hard time. Some of them totally refuse. Due to these unfulfilled pledges, the concerned committee is disappointes and it becomes difficult to manage expenses of their existing and proposed projects. Miracle Media would like to request everyone that if you pledge to donate generously then fulfill your commitments. Allah (swt) does not like false commitments. Whatever you can afford lump sum or partially donate for the noble cause of any project. You will please Allah (SWT) and get better reward inshAllah.

Liberal Party MP visits
Fleetwood Islamic Center during Ramadan. Scott Brison, Liberal MP for Kings Hants, Nova Scotia stopped in to meet and dine with Muslims at Fleetwood Islamic Center on Tuesday June 23. A large crowd, including sisters and families gathered to hear Mr. Brison engage on a number of topics including Bill C-51 (Anti Terror Act), Bill C-24 (Amendments to the Citizenship Act), Immigration, Canada’s role in the world and continuous attacks from Conservative ads. The evening was hosted by the Committee of the Fleetwood Islamic Center. Br. Suleiman Abbas, on behalf of the committee welcomed guests while framing the context for the evening. He was very forthcoming on the issues of importance to Muslims across the Lower Mainland. Br. Bilal Cheema emphasized the diversity of interests on issues within the Muslim Community; Health Care, Seniors Care, Homelessness and income inequality to name a few. Mr. Brison answered as many questions as he could before Iftar and Maghrib and continued in one on one discussion afterwards and well after dinner. He spoke of needing the right balance between security and civil liberties. He recognized the unease of many with the Liberal decision to support Bill C-51, but also clarified for participant’s areas where the Liberals would repeal if elected. He specifically highlighted the Liberal commitment to introduce a sunset clause of
3 years on major provisions of the Bill and much needed oversight on others that dealt with law enforcement agencies. On Bill C-24, Mr. Brison said the Liberals do not support a two tiered citizenship and would repeal this Bill outright if elected. Mr. Brison referenced the Charter of Right and Freedoms numerous times as a pillar that needs to be protected so that it may function as intended, protecting differences among Canadians that make us stronger as a nation. Mr. Brison serves as the Liberal Spokesperson on economic issues and also serves as the Liberal Party critic for Finance. He has previously served as Canada’s Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Receiver General of Canada under Paul Martin’s government. Accompanying Mr. Brison were Mr. John Aldag, Liberal candidate in Cloverdale-Langley City, Liberal MLA Gordon Hogg, Justin Kaiser, President of the Young Liberals of Canada and Ken Hardie, President of the Liberals Seniors Commission of BC. It was a welcome sign to see politicians visiting a Muslim place of worship, especially during the month of Ramadan. Its better they learn of Muslims and Islam from Muslims in a place of worship. More outreach efforts such as these should be organized across the community.

16 L O C A L ICNA Relief-Canada Fundraising Iftaar Dinner Ramadan 23, 1436 JuLY 10, 2015
ICNA Relief Canada organized fundraising iftaar dinner to raise funds for international and domestic relief programs. Program held at Crystal York banquet hall in Surrey on June 27th. Program was opened by Sheikh AbdulAziz Qasim (Visiting from Egypt) with beautiful recitation from Qur’an. Br Ghulam Mustafa talked about ICNA Relief’s domestic and international programs. He also explained how ICNA-Relief strives to keep administrative and overhead cost as low as possible through its network of dedicated volunteers. He said that we ensure that every dollar donated to IRC reaches the deserving people safely and timely with 100% transparency, accountability and dignity He also outlined the strategy of ICNA Relief Canada. •To assist and empower the people in need, locally and internationally •Develop effective disaster and emergency response domestically & internationally •Donors’ Satisfaction & Trust •Develop highly responsive professional leadership, staff & volunteers •Effectively utilize the means of mass communication Domestic Programs: •Muslim Family Services (MFS) •Food Banks •Women Shelter •Emergency Relief and Financial Help (ER) •Seniors Support•Funeral Support •Matrimonial Services •Foster Parenting •Youth Leadership and Development Program International Programs: •Education for poor and needy •Medical Health Care Program •Water for Life during Drought •Zabiha Program •Skill Development program •Orphan Sponsorship Program •Helthcare •Women Empowerment Program Last year alone, we served more than 46,000 Canadians through our ten resource centers in different cities including Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Scarborough, Thorncliff, Milton, Hamilton-Brantford, Montreal and Surrey (BC) Helped over 500,000 people through the Za-
biha program & Aided about a million lives in Syria, Gaza, Burma, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries in 2014 Currently, our teams are working in different countries including Syria, Nepal, Palestine, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia with our local trustworthy and reliable partners to reduce human sufferings At this moment, over 4 million Syrians are desperately struggling to survive in refugee camps Over 8 million Nepalese (where about 5% are Muslim) are still trying to recover from the aftermath of the recent devastating earthquakes. Over 10,000 Rohingya Muslims of Burma are living in boats while facing death at sea every day. Many of these people are fasting in this Ramadan and need immediate assistance with our special attention. Dr. Osama Ebesh who recently came from Syria from a medical relief mission presented about the situation in Syria. Since the conflict started huge number of people have been affected and forced to live in refugee camps because their homes have been completely destroyed. According to UN over four million are living in refugee camps inside and outside Syria. 120,000 died and over 200,000 injured since the war started. Lots of human lives could have been saved if there was medical treatment available. Over 75% hospitals have been destroyed in the area. Because of unavailability of medical treatment even minor wounds turns infectious and causing deaths. ICNA Relief launched a massive campaign two years ago to help our brothers and sisters in Syria. We raised and spent over $500,000 on emergency food relief, medical supplies and equipment and children education. ICNA Relief also supports close to 3000 orphan kids in different parts of the world every year through its “orphan sponsorship program”. Funds raised for this cause are spent on building orphanages and provision of food, education and lodging of orphans. Over one hundred fifty concerned community members from all races and walk of life attended the Surrey, June 27th program and helped our brothers and sisters across the
globe by their donations and prayers. Guest speaker Br Faizel Kathrada highlighted the importance of helping these brothers and sisters in need. He quoted that we should put our self in the shoes of those brothers and sisters who are going trough hardship to get the feeling and motivation to help them. He also added that helping these brothers and sisters is actually helping our selves in the hereafter inshaAllah. ICNA Relief Canada wants to thank all brothers and sisters who attended the event and those who had intention but couldn’t attend for any reasons. We have raised close to $40k so far and donations are still pouring in, lots of brothers and sisters who could not come to the event and wanted to donate have called after the event. Donation for any of these causes can be made online at icnareliefcanad.ca OR by calling our Surrey office at (778)578-3080. We also thank all the volunteers for their efforts, may Allah give you all the best of reward….aameen

While sentencing Sen, Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili told the court that he finds no exceptional circumstances in which to suspend this sentence. He says the court will not condone these types of offences. The court heard that between 30th September to 3rd October 2012 while being employed in the public service as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sen without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, asked for a benefit of $3,000 for herself. It was also heard that she asked for the benefit with the intention of fostering or sustaining a belief that the exercise of her duties as a public official will be influenced. http://fi jivillage.com/ Former Assistant Superintendent of Police Rehana Sen will spend the next 18 months in prison after she was convicted of Asking for a Bribe.
Govt recommends changes to Media Decree
The government has recommended certain changes to the Media Industry Development Decree which would allow foreign companies to own Pay Television stations and also allow cross ownership of only Pay TV. Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum tabled a motion in relation to the amendment to the decree. He says this is purely for Pay TV in the country. No local content including local news will be allowed to be shown on these Pay TV stations. Please log in with a valid account to access attached audio content... Sayed-Khaiyum says Digicel is currently talking to Fijian Holdings Limited to buy Fiji Television Limited’s Pay TV company Sky Pacific. He says under the current law this cannot be done. Sayed-Khaiyum says the bill also recommends that the Media Industry Tribunal’s
ability to fine journalists be removed. He says journalists will be liable for an apology for any breaches. Sayed-Khaiyum says only the publisher, editor or company will be liable for fines as they have higher responsibility. Parliament has passed the motion to be debated today and it will not go to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. http://fijivillage.com/

Eid al-Fitr for Children
As many Muslims today say “Eid is like our Christmas”, and in a way, it is. It is one of the two celebrations that Muslims celebrate (Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha). With the busyness of Ramadhan or the fact that many want to remain focussed on the blessed month and not pre-occupied with many worldly things, it can be difficult to plan a massive shindig for Eid. But it need not be a hassle. With pre planning, internet shopping and things that you can make at home, your Eid celebration planning should be a doddle. Eid is a time for contemplation, celebration, gift giving and family and friends. It is especially important for children, especially young ones, as we should try and instil in them the importance of Eid from a young age. Children living in the west, because of a lack of understanding of Eid and usually due to the fact that some parents don’t make a big
deal out of it, don’t feel Eid the way I think it should be felt. It becomes more like a “Yehlets-party-’cos-now-we-can-eat” type of day. Children often feel uncomfortable and bored on Eid (dressed up in scratchy clothes, masjid early in the morning, visiting endless family…) and so they can easily lose sight of the fun of Eid. So when Christmas comes around and they see the huge deal it is, inevitably, to them, it holds more importance than Eid. Which is why they need to know that some people celebrate Christmas, and it is a special time for them, and we celebrate Eid, and it is a special time for us. So, how can we make Eid fun for the little ones? How can we make it a time they will remember? Here are some simple ideas to make planning Eid easier for you, and make it a fun time for the little ones. School If your child is at a mainstream school, the
school may not be celebrating Eid, although many schools do acknowledge different religious festivals and teach the children about it. Encourage your child to write Eid cards for their friends. You can purchase Eid cards in most Islamic bookshops, but also from Amazon .You can also buy sweets and send them into school for your child’s class, and maybe ask the teacher to put up an Eid information poster, you could encourage your child to make one. Presents
You don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on presents, but you can find some lovely children’s gifts on www.islam4kids.com. It might also be worth looking out for sales in mainstream stores for clothes and toys (Mothercare, Early Learning Centre ). You can find wonderful gifts for adults and children here www.sirat.com. You can even encourage your child to make their own Eid cards or even presents for family members, or let them help choose presents for others, while teaching them the importance of giving gifts in Islam, and that gifts don’t have to be big or expensive. Party If the weather is nice, why not have a barbecue for Eid. Either way, a gathering of family and friends is great for everyone, not just the kids. Remember to include non-Muslim friends/family, and invite your child’s friends also. It may be a nice touch to let your child choose a theme for the party “Eid Tea Party”, for example. With regards to food, you could help them to bake for the party, cupcakes, or a main cake. Decorations You can buy decorations- sure. But why not let the kids to make their own? There are many websites that can give you ideas. Alternatively or together with homemade decorations, you can visit a party shop and get all of your decorations in one day. Get the kids to help decorate aswell. It will be a fun build up to the party! Party bags/party games If there will be afew children at your party, why not plan some party games and give party bags. You can tweak many traditional party games to suit your needs (ie- ‘pass the parcel’, a game in which the children pass a present to music, when the music stops the child who has the present opens one layer. There is usually a small gift between every layer. You can use children’s nasheeds for this game). You can buy anything to put in party bags or games. Things like these badges are really sweet. You can also get Islamic stickers and small books/ toys for party pags. For any Londoners, there is a fabulous Islamic shop, Zam Zam, on Green Street, near Upton Park where you can purchase things like stickers and badges. Not losing sight of the reason for Eid Amongst the party games and food, we can easily lose sight of why we are celebrating Eid. In order to feel the true essence of Eid, it might be worth finding somewhere where Eid salaat is prayed outside, or where there is an Eid fair, so that the family can be part of a wider community Eid celebration. When it comes to your celebration at home, a good idea is to encourage the child- prior to Eid, to write a short story about their favourite time in Ramadhan, to read to family and friends at the Eid party. Or you can encourage them to write and perform a play about Ramadhan. Something as small as (for older children) learning a new surah during Ramadhan and reciting it as an opening for the Eid party can be a lovely touch. Maybe they can recite ahadith about Eid and what we are to do on Eid, and why. This can gradually become a yearly tradition. InshaAllah (God Willing), you found this short blog post useful! I do hope that you all have a blessed Ramadhan, and an Eid full of goodness, love, joy and lots of remembrance of Allah.

Harper Government brings in stiff new penalties for those who abuse foreign worker programs Employment and Social Development Canada
The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development, today announced stiff new consequences for employers who break the rules of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP). The Government initially announced that penalties would be enhanced for employers that break the rules of the programs in June 2014. Employers who are found non-compliant with program conditions could be subject to financial penalties ranging from $500 to $100,000 per violation, and up to $1 million in a one-year period. In addition, the existing two-year ban from the programs will be replaced with bans of various lengths – including one, two, five and ten years. Employers could face a permanent ban for the most serious violations.
The new consequences will encourage compliance and help prevent employers from misusing the programs or mistreating workers by ensuring that employers who violate program conditions face appropriate consequences. When compliance is not achieved, these new consequences will match the abuse. The new consequences, announced in June, are part of program changes made in June 2014 and will come into force on December 1, 2015. Quick Facts •Since 2013, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) has conducted thousands of inspections to verify employer compliance with TFWP requirements. •Since the launch of the Confidential Tip Line in April 2014 and the Online Fraud Reporting tool in June 2014, ESDC has received thousands of complaints of alleged violations of conditions of the TFWP.
•Since 2010, ESDC has revoked more than 400 Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs), in cases where employers had broken the rules of the TFWP. If the new consequences had been in force at that time, these employers would have likely been subject to a financial penalty and/or a ban from the programs. Quotes “The Harper Government will not tolerate any abuse of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program. We are committed to protecting the Canadian labour market and economy as well as foreign workers. Employers who break the rules will face the full force of the law, including financial penalties up to $1 million and permanent bans from the programs.” – The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development
“Our Government is committed to ensuring that Canadians are always considered first for available jobs. Both the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and International Mobility Program are important avenues for international workers to come to Canada and gain experience in our labour market on a temporary basis. However, our Government is dedicated to providing all Canadians with the tools and opportunities they need to become part of the competitive global workforce. We will not allow for abuses of our generous foreign worker programs, and we will ensure that those employers who do not respect the rules face the consequences.” – The Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration

We usually take care to take care of mandatory things, its good Sign of responsible person then why not my friends same for family Is it because legal actions are not taken , punishment like fines are not given If failed for family unlike official matters. On the contrary we pay heavy fines and charges, suffer heavy long term losses if we fail to honour our mandatory obligations of and for the family. The relation between parents and youth, family members cannot be without minor or major conflict, difference of opinion at one stage or the other. What actually is this what’s the problem dear present parents and future parents Is it so called generation gap? Is it lack of understanding? Is it lots of expectation on either side? Is it being sensitive? Is it conflict of ego, kind of who says so,you cant rule me, order me sort of thing Is it taking family members for granted? Is it simply hard to cope with life full of
problems Is it pressure of day to day survival Is helplessness, limitations lack of proper knowledge Is it selfishness ,self-centered mentality? Each one has to find out their perfect fitting shoes. There can be many big and small problems reciprocated by big and small solutions In the coming issues we will start from the starting right parents and future parents Meanwhile its beautiful hot summer lets enjoy the summer Picnics, outings barbeques, friends and family get-togethers ,long walks, swimming, hiking’s……..ice creams… Who knows We may have strong family bonding solving many conflicts naturally and there may be spring all the time in some corner of our home always …amen The Miracle Media would like to welcome your feedback views and thoughts on this topic of parents and youth problems your identity will be kept anonymous. have to make do with what you have in order to survive, but be sure you’re still looking for ways to improve yourself and progress to something better and something that represents your true self. For example, if you dream of writing the next big screenplay, continue working on it when you have the time. Setting aside time to pursue your dreams is important because these are things no one can take away from you. You own the right to all of your dreams and the ability to make them come to life. The key is to still be practical, but also to be passionate. You were not meant to live this life doing just what is required to survive; you were meant to live life chasing your dreams. Don’t be afraid of failure, because failure is a learning experience that will strengthen you and prepare you to do better in the future. Would you rather sit around and live in the regret of not knowing what would’ve happened if you had tried, or would you rather lead an exciting life by taking on risks and challenges that will ultimately lead you to what you were meant to do? It’s never late to start!!
Self-respect is crucial to self-care because it protects you from settling for less when you deserve the best. This is toxic to how you view yourself and how you allow others to treat you, your values and your boundaries. If you allow others to trample over your expectations constantly, you’re debasing your worth and chopping away at your self-esteem. You might be afraid that if you have high standards for yourself, people might perceive you as a highmaintenance person and even abandon you in the process. Let them. In fact, it’s probably a good thing that they do abandon you and reveal their true colors. At the end of the day, your opinion of yourself and what you deserve is all that truly matters in life. Having high standards for yourself, your career and relationships protect s you in the long-run. Think of things that fall below your standards as bad experiences. You’re not getting what you need and want out of it, but the person on the other side is. It’s not worth the investment if someone else is benefiting from the positive return. Life is too short to waste your energy by allocating resources into goals that are not truly your own. Caring for ourselves means remaining authentic and recognizing our true passions. Don’t be pressured into picking a certain career path just because society says it’s the right one for you; don’t always settle for crappy jobs just because they’ll pay the rent; don’t pursue a major just because of its financial rewards unless it’s something that shabnam@skcounselling.ca really interests you. Sometimes you will

Younis 171* gives Pakistan series in record chase
Younis Khan’s epic, unbeaten 171 led Pakistan to their highest successful chase, the second highest in Asia for any side, and the sixth highest in all Test cricket. It also gave them their first series win in Sri Lanka since 2006, and catapulted them to third in the ICC Test rankings. The feat required the highest fourth-innings partnership for Pakistan, 242 between Younis and Shan Masood, who fell on the fifth morning for 125. Misbah-ul-Haq arrived with 122 needed, saw off Sri Lanka’s quicks till lunch, and opened up after that to reel off an unbeaten 59, finishing the match with a six. Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers put in a spirited effort, especially with the second new ball, but could not break down Younis and Misbah. Pakistan needed 147 more at the start of the day, and Masood and Younis’ record partnership grew by 25 before the former fell to his nerves. Masood
had been tied down by Sri Lanka’s accuracy, and was itching to break free. No release was provided by Angelo Mathews and the specialist seamers. When the offspinner Tharindu Kaushal was introduced in the 11th over of the morning, Masood, eyeing some runs, jumped out, but was beaten by the turn to be stumped. Sri Lanka’s specialist spinner had begun promisingly after a wayward return of 0 for 92 in 20 overs on day four, but again, he failed to sustain the pressure. He did shift his line wider outside off and spun it in sharply with men waiting in the leg trap, but was too inconsistent with his lengths. Misbah and Younis used the sweep frequently, and put away the regular full tosses with ease. It was a different story against the quicks. The first boundary of the day came only in the tenth over, when Younis forced an edge through the vacant slip
region off Nuwan Pradeep. There was little in the pitch by way of variable bounce to suggest it was a day-five subcontinent wicket. Despite their discipline at the start, Sri Lanka were dependent on the new ball. Pakistan needed 101 more when it was taken, and they had the personnel in the middle to get them through. Misbah was happy to deny himself against the new ball, going 22 balls without a run. Batting on a big hundred, Younis was eager to move across and play as much as he could. There was an unsuccessful review for leg-before against Younis, on 128, by Dhammika Prasad, replays returning umpire’s call for points of impact on pad and stumps. As Mathews tried Kaushal again at the stroke of lunch, Misbah stepped out to lift him over mid-on. Sri Lanka’s challenge fell apart after lunch, Misbah and Younis raining boundaries on
the hapless Kaushal, who had played ahead of veteran Rangana Herath, and was to end with figures of 1 for 153 in 31 overs. The winning runs came again from Misbah’s bat, as they had come during their Sharjah chase of 302 against Sri Lanka in 2014. Younis ended with the fifth-highest score in a chase. Source: Cricinfo
Amir Khan: Fasting during Ramadan a worthwhile ‘sacrifice’
The Bolton boxer insists fasting will not adversely affect his chances if - as has been widely speculated - he faces undefeated triple welterweight world champion Floyd Mayweather in September. Khan insists on training throughout Ramadan - 30 consecutive days of fasting for 17 hours - while eating and drinking only at night. “The training has changed big time”, the 28-year-old acknowledges. “After fasting all day I eat late in the evening, go to mosque for my prayers and then hit the gym at midnight to train for about an hour. “It’s extremely tough but the motiva-
tion for me is that my opponents are sleeping whilst Amir Khan is training. It’s not really something a sportsman should be doing but that’s the sacrifices you have to make when you’re a Muslim.” Khan, who shot to fame as a 17-year-old by winning a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics, explains why he is confident of being in tip-top condition in time for what would be the biggest fight of his professional career. “Ramadan ends on 17 or 18 July that gives me enough time to finish Ramadan and then go into hard training. I’m very confident, I think that fight could definitely happen - I’m just waiting for that phone call. “If I get the big fight with Floyd Mayweather, I’ll be more than ready for it. Ramadan is not going to make a difference!” Boxing trainer Adam Booth looked after former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams, who was also a devout Muslim. “Danny used to fast during the month of Ramadan and we would change the cycle for eating, sleeping and training,” he said. “It’s definitely 100% possible for Amir Khan to
fast during Ramadan and be ready to face Mayweather in the Autumn.” Former light welterweight world champion Khan usually eats five meals a day, but during Ramadan he reduces that to only two. “I miss my morning cup of tea and my desserts when I’m fasting,” he laughs, before explaining what it’s like when he can finally tuck in. “Sometimes there’s so much food in front of you and you think ‘I just want to get stuck in’ but that’s the challenge - you have to make sure you eat healthily but it’s very hard - I sometimes like to slide away and have a kebab or a samosa it’s not easy! “I’m a normal guy at the end of the day - but I make up for it when I go back into the training camp.” Although he is now a married man and a father, Khan still cannot resist his mum’s cooking. “Her food is amazing - I call it ‘happy food’ because it makes me so happy, it’s the first thing I crave - training camp food is so plain and bland, but when I’m at home mum makes sure she feeds me lots of meaty curries… that’s why I put on so much weight between training. “I like to add
bits to my mum’s cooking too - she doesn’t like that - so I have to explain the health benefits of why I’m adding that extra bit of ginger, for example.” Rugby union sports nutritionist Matt Lovell believes fasting could prove beneficial to Khan. “It can be done,” he says. “Fasting can give you mental strength and power. I can’t see Ramadan affecting Amir negatively - the six weeks between the end of Ramadan and Khan’s potential big fight with Floyd Mayweather is enough time for him to be ready.” Khan started fasting when he was eight years old, and believes his faith goes glove-in-glove with his sport. “When I go into the boxing ring, it’s a very lonely place, when I go into the gym it’s a very quiet place. I’m on my own training, but it’s God that gives me the strength. “My faith drives me, gives me that motivation and that push. I see a lot of people around the world, Muslims and non-Muslim who have a lot of belief in their faith. They’re the people who get far in life - if you have belief you can definitely get far.” Source: BBC News
