Celebrating Pakistan Day Confirms National Strength
General perception is the immature society in Pakistan remains labelled as the one living with its continuing incapacity to swiftly reject illogical and irrational acts. More sadly, even the media and the intellectuals have not been able to effectively discourage the growth of extremism, ignorance and sectarian violence and the ongoing proxy war with proven results. Thanks to Pakistan Military that has freed the country from the clutches of terrorists. At least, the nation once again looks confidant and is already in the “gearing up mode” to celebrate the upcoming Pakistan independence day on August 14th. On this day in 1947, Pakistan became a reality as an independent country, yet the unbearable cost was sky high, as the damage in terms of lost honour of the violated women and their murders would remain irreparable forever. Indeed, the massive migration, amid widespread communal violence, ethnic cleansing/genocide, trainloads of slaughtered Muslims and the mercilessly raped young women, reminds us of the trauma of all those who sacrificed just to give a comfortable independent land to the new Pakistanis. Mr Jinnah particularly emphasised, “You are free to go to your temples; you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed – that has nothing to do with the business of the state.” In spite of unfavourable economic circumstance and the unfriendly atmosphere around, the general public
all over Pakistan loves celebrating Independence Day with patriotic zest. Many dress up in green and white, which are the Pakistani flag’s colours. People visit national monuments and places of national significance to celebrate Independence Day. Pakistan’s national flag is hoisted on public, private buildings, residences and monuments at dawn. Government buildings, including Parliament House. There are fireworks to enjoy. Pakistan’s Independence Day also pays homage to people who devoted their lives for Pakistan’s freedom movement and made sacrifices to attain Pakistan’s independence. A change of guard takes place at national monuments, including the mausoleums of Sir Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and Mr Jinnah (supreme leader) The celebration will go ahead as planned despite it’s officially realized that “militant wings in the garb of political parties were hatching conspiracies against the ongoing Karachi operation” In a statement the paramilitary force’s spokesman also asked the people to inform the Pakistan Rangers and advised the media to avoid broadcasting unconfirmed reports. “Certain unscrupulous elements, under the garb of political parties running their militant wings in a desperate attempt have launched a campaign to malign the Karachi operation,” said the brief statement without mentioning these ‘elements’ and their move which forced the Rangers to issue such a statement. “These attempts are meant to create restlessness among the citizens.
Karachi operation by the rangers means the Karachites will be facilitated to celebrate the Independence Day peacefully. There is no doubt about the ongoing success of the “Operation Zarb-eAzb,” and the fact is the said operation still continues to weed out successfully all the anti-Pakistan warring factions, specifically the TTP terrorists from the FATA region. However, threat to life and property by the foreign funded terrorism is still a big challenge which is being faced by all concerned throughout the country. There is clear evidence of the foreign involvement in Sind and Baluchistan. The neighbouring countries that are sponsoring terrorism to disrupt the writ of Pakistan are documented. Unfortunately, the Pak foreign office or the concerned officials have not presented the proxy war case before the World body. Pakistan Day is coming fast, so is the flooding all over - and the reason is the rain overflow drainage system is all clogged up with sand and the rain water causes heavy floods .Lack of maintenance by the government is to blame too. Other major reason is non construction of Kala bagh dam. Some stubborn politicians and the locals fail to realize that besides providing irrigation facility and generating electricity, the KB dam would have the capacity to store the excess running water flowing to the ocean. Irony is when running rivers are normally flowing, there is water theft by the upper riparian India from the share of lower riparian Pakistan; so this remains one of the major issues that Pakistan keeps failing to correct at the UN forum.
Suspicion is , there is a strategy at work to turn Pakistan into a barren land with no drinking and irrigation water, hence, making it look like miserable Somalia and Ethiopia. Shamefully, some politicians issue rhetorical statements saying the KB dam will be built over their dead bodies. Most probably, issues like energy crisis have been illegitimately designed by the anti Pakistan elements with ulterior motives; the stake holders may include both the locals and the foreigners. With respect to the allegations of locally stolen mandate (ballot) and economic downturn, answer lies only in encouraging a level playing field to reproduce constructive conscience of the entire nation; that would generate peaceful atmosphere. It’s absolutely necessary to keep paying tribute to those who dedicated their lives to earn freedom for us. Although the people of Pakistan celebrate the Independence Day with patriotism, yet they should remember what Jinnah’s dream was; many among us seem to have forgotten the reason for the formation of Pakistan. Fresh indicators of economic Relief in sight: Despite the expected global recession, an economic upturn in Pakistan is on its way. This year, Zarb e Azb has almost concluded with good results while the Karachi operation is going well, and the Pak China economic corridor is going as planned. Thus, Pakistan is moving towards its economic recovery faster than expected. All gains are a gift for the “Happy Pakistan Day.” Pakistan Zinda Baad Resources: www.timeanddate.com/holidays/pakistan/independence-day www.dawn.com

A better way to support middle class families
Kevin Lamoureux, MP Liberal Party of Canada Deputy House Leader Canadians don’t have to settle for the Conservative government’s family policies that give the most money to those who need it the least. The Liberal Party has a better plan, one that is focused on the middle class. Recently Minister Pierre Poilievre has been heavily promoting the government’s plan. Its cornerstone is “income splitting”, which gives a $2000 tax break to those making a quarter of a million dollars, but nothing to a single mom. It helps fewer than 15% of Canadian households, and for those few, the biggest gains go to the wealthiest. At a cost of $2 billion a year, income splitting uses an awful lot of money to help a small and select group. No wonder the late Jim Flaherty, while he was Finance Minister, said “I’m not sure that overall it benefits our society”. The second plank of the Conservative plan takes an identical “cookie cutter” approach to everyone. It provides the exact same limited benefit to the wealthiest as to the working poor. Only the Liberal Party has a plan for more fair, generous support for middle class families and all those working so hard to get there. We will roll together the current jumble of child
benefit programs, top them up with money saved from reducing government waste, and target the benefits to lower and middle income families. A new “Canada Child Benefit” (CCB) will provide a lot more help, to nine out of ten families. The CCB will provide up to $553 monthly for each child under six and $450 for each child over six, indexed to inflation and completely tax-free. The benefit gradually declines for those with higher incomes. A family with one child under six and a household income of $90,000 would receive $3,245 each year, over 50% more than they do today. A Liberal government will give a tax cut to the middle class and provide middle class families with more support. Our plan will create economic growth and put more money in the pockets of those who need it most. That’s real change.
“Forgiving Prime Minister ” By: Gulshan Alanai A wonderful gesture by Al Ameen editorial (July 3rd) that certainly shows Islamic Spiritthat reflects the teaching of Universal Messenger Muhammad SAWS. Although, it would be hard to forget the deep wounds of hurt by the ‘Political bigotry’ demonizing Islam and Muslims, mainly the Muslim Women’s Holy attire, and for being obedient to the Law of Creator-GOD. For which the true Muslims will always remain 2nd class citizens in every corner of the world, except in the Spiritual world that leads to theParadise. On the other hand the P.M. can be excused for his toxic anti-Muslim rhetoric as he has been influenced by some
so-called Muslims with their false notion of Pluralism reporting: “Radicalization in the Mosques”, and of course by the terrorist actions of some mentally disturbed ‘angry Birds’ (fake Muslims). We Muslims are much to be blamed for his anger as we failed to give him the true ‘Islamic Knowledge’, which we too the converts didn’t have until we came to the Western countries, thank GOD and thanks to all P. M. and Presidents. We took full advantage of our freedom and charter of rights to touch the Quran (& Bible) that was forbidden by our self declared Imam Sultan Shah an apostate of his own Shia Ithnashri sect remained an atheist, anti-Islam, anti-Quran, and kept us too away from Islam, Quran and unknown to Allah our Creator and so we never knew how to perform Muslim Salat-Namaz and to prostrate to HIM Ironically, the Bill 62 and Bill 59 reminds us the converts of the painful fatwa made by the Imamagainst the covering of Women. So P. M, is not the only one to be blamed I hope Ismaili Sen. Jaffer remembers Imam’s order of forbidding the Head covering with Chuni/ Pachedi, and body covering with Saree or a long dress worn in those days by the Sindhi-Baluchi and Hindu converts to Ismailism. It was a devastating situation for those women to obey the most radical unethical order of Imam. All the women cried for the whole
month as they couldn’t give up the modest garment and wear short dresses. it was like going out half naked, but after the one month notice they had no choice but to either obey Imam-god or leave Town and community. P.M. Is not guilty of such ruling. Many believe that the P.M. only needs to say sorry, no need for reparation or bribe with Iftari to get ‘Votes’. He can only earn the votes by recognizing Oneness of GOD the first priority, respectful of HIS law and HIS followers. Oneness of community is already established by HIM, that reflects in our colorful Muslim community consists of Arabs, Jews, Christians, Catholics, Hindus, Africans, 12 tribes of Prophet Israel-Jacob (AS) and the tribes of Manasseh, all are intertwined as the colorful Olympic Rings. Still carrying all the Holy Revelations part of the Quran the closing Revelation. Yes, Prime Minister you can be forgiven and we pray that you will be kind and respectful to us the true Muslim Women who looks like H. Mary (RA) the beloved Mother of our Messiah Jesus (AS)following the same GOD.We the converts are proud of being the Ummah/community of Creator and for the introduction of all HIS great Biblical Prophets and Messengers. GOD says: “Do not Scorn MY Signs”!“Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding”. A. Einstein.

Military courts get Supreme Court nod
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday in a majority ruling upheld the establishment of military courts in Pakistan. Petitions challenging the 21st amendment were dismissed in a majority 11-6 vote of the 17-member SC bench. Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk and Justice Dost Muhammad announced the verdict. In a 14-3 majority vote, petitions challenging the 18th amendment were also dismissed by the bench. Judges provided seven opinions and two additional notes on the ruling. The judgement was to be announced by the full court bench headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk in Courtroom No 1 of the SC building. The SC office had issued a supplementary cause list heralding the announcement of the judgement. “Disappointing verdict” Former Supreme Court Bar Association President Kamran Murtaza said “It’s a very disappointing verdict by the apex court. The court just upheld the doctrine of necessity. We are going to file a review petition against this judgement.” Kamran Murtaza and Asma Jehangir had earlier this year petitioned against the establishment of military courts on behalf of the SCBA. “Success for the nation” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Special Assistant for Law Ashtar Ausaf Ali called the decision “another strike against terror”, adding, “it’s a success for the nation.” He said that the apex court stated that amendments which can change the country for the better can be made to the Constitution and added that military courts have been set up in order to “crush terrorists”.
Ausaf said that within the next two years of operation of military courts, remaining institutions will be strengthened. “Prosecution will be improved, evidence collection will be better ... Circumstances will have improved.” He also said it is possible these circumstances have not arisen before and do not exist in any other country. “The European Union, the United States and other democracies need to understand that we need to make decisions according to our circumstances ... And we know best how to rid ourselves of terrorists.” The Parliament passed the 21st Amendment and the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, to establish the special courts after the massacre in the Army Public School, Peshawar, last year. On April 16 the apex court had suspended executions of six militants who were awarded death sentence by these military courts. The stay order was issued on an application filed by rights activist Asma Jehangir on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) after army chief Gen Raheel Sharif had ratified the death sentence to six militants and life imprisonment to one by the military courts. The judgement on the 21st Amendment as well as the 18th Amendment will be the last major verdict by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk as he will attain superannuation on Aug 16. Over a five-month long hearing on the challenges to the 18th and 21st amendments was wrapped up by the Supreme Court on June 26. Also read: SC reserves verdict on petitions challenging 18th, 21st amendments A total of 31 constitutional petitions were taken up by thecourt, of which 16 petitions were regarding 18th Amendment the rest were about 21st amendment. The 18th Amendment was passed by the Parliament during the last PPP government which introduced a new procedure for the appointment of superior court judges. The final judgement in the 18th Amendment case is still pending with the Supreme Court for the last four years though a full-court bench headed by then Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had issued an order on Oct 21, 2010, suggesting that guidelines in the mode of appointment of superior court judges under Article 175-A of the constitution. Later the Parliament brought the 19th Amendment by accepting almost all the proposals and incorporating in the Constitution as suggested by the Supreme Court. Source: Dawn.com

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday while addressing the National Assembly session said that the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the establishment of military courts has strengthened the war against terrorism. “With this decision, the war against terrorism will be strengthened and terrorists will be discouraged,” PM Nawaz said.He added that the Parliament’s decision has been validated by the court and the acceptance of the extraordinary steps is commendable. “For extraordinary circumstances, extraordinary steps are required,” the premier reiterated. He further added that all political parties had reservations about the establishment of military courts, but to eradicate terrorism from the country, and to save people from unmerciful elements who play with human lives, this step was believed to be necessary.
MQM committee defends Altaf’s Speech KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) denied on Sunday that its London-based chief Altaf Hussain had talked about seeking “help from India, Nato and the United Nations” in his speech at a party programme held in the United States on Saturday. The MQM coordination committee held a late-night press conference in response to widespread criticism of Mr Hussain’s latest remarks. Party leader Dr Farooq Sattar said Mr Hussain’s speech was within the parameters of the Constitution of Pakistan. Also read: MQM submits letter to UN chief over alleged mistreatment of activists “The MQM and Altaf Hussain are insepara-
ble,” he declared. “He is struggling for the rights of Mohajirs and [was] speaking on behalf of 50 million Mohajirs.” In response to Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s remarks that Mr Hussain was giving controversial statements because of cases against him in London, Dr Sattar said they had been pending for five years. “Has Altaf Bhai been speaking like this for the past five years?” he asked. He said Altaf Hussain had held pro-military rallies in Karachi, but the ongoing targeted operation in the city had been turned against the MQM. He claimed that scores of MQM workers had been ‘missing’, dozens had been killed in an extrajudicial manner and hundreds de-
tained without charges. “No-one is listening to us... What should we do if we don’t get justice,” he said, adding that the MQM had demanded a judicial commission on the issue but it had not been set up. “Is this an unjust demand?” he asked. He said: “We should be told who will ensure an impartial investigation into enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings of our workers.” The MQM committee also criticised statements of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti about Mr Hussain’s speech and
said he had spoken only the truth. The committee asked why the chief minister had remained tight-lipped when Defence Minister Khawaja Asif issued an allegedly provocative statement against the armed forces. Source: Dawn.com

Netanyahu lobbies US Jews Anti-Houthi forces retake to act against Iran deal Yemen’s largest army base
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has launched a campaign to mobilise Jewish American citizens against the nuclear deal between Iraq and world powers championed by President Barack Obama, which is facing review by the US Congress. In a webcast organised by Jewish groups in North America, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s arguments that the July 14 deal was not enough to curb Iranian nuclear projects with bomb-making potential. He argued that a windfall in sanctions relief could help Tehran finance destabilising regional conflicts. With surveys showing American Jewish opinion mixed on a dispute that has strained the US-Israeli alliance, Netanyahu cast his opposition to the Iran deal as non-partisan. He also pushed back against the Obama administration’s counter-argument that the deal was the only way to avoid eventual war with Iran. “I don’t oppose this deal because I want war. I oppose this deal because I want to prevent war. And this deal will bring war,” he said. “This is a time to stand up and be counted. Oppose this dangerous deal.” Organisers said 10,000 people - not taking into account
expected group audiences - had signed up to view the webcast. That might translate into grassroots pressure on US congressmen and congresswomen weighing ratification of the deal by September 17. “It is safe to say that the opponents of the deal have been much more vocal and active in expressing their case. Thousands attended a very organised Jewish rally against the deal in New York,” Al Jazeera’s Kristen Saloomey said, reporting from New York. “The Citizens for a Nuclear-Free Iran is an organisation that has been recently born. It is spending some $1.7m to lobby against the deal. They are trying to get people to call their congressmen and congresswomen to push them to express their concerns,” she said. Having infuriated the Obama administration by speaking against Iran in Congress in March at the invitation of the Democratic president’s Republican rivals, Netanyahu cast himself as the emissary of an Israeli public that, polls show, mostly shares his misgivings about the deal with Iran. Deaths as two trains derail over central Indian river
At least 19 people have been killed after two passenger trains travelling in opposite directions derailed within minutes of each other, sending carriages tumbling into a river in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The Kamayani Express derailed around midnight local time on Tuesday near
the Kudawa railway station, about 20km from the town of Harda. A second train, the Janata Express, travelling in the opposite direction from Patna to Mumbai, also derailed on the same bridge minutes later. Police have recovered 19 bodies so far, but many more are feared dead. Al Jazeera’s
Forces battling Houthi fighters in Yemen say they have captured the country’s largest military base following intense clashes which left dozens killed. In a statement on Monday, the government of exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi claimed complete control of al-Anad base in Lahej province in the country’s south. “With the help and back-up of the Arab-led coalition, this achievement was possible,” the statement said. Troops were also supported by Popular Resistance Committees who have sided with the government in the fight against the Houthis. The Houthis’ loss of the base deals a significant blow to the Iran-allied Shia group, which has seized large parts of the country but recently lost control of the southern port city of Aden. Nasser Hadour, an officer in the Popular Resistance Committees, told Al Jazeera that forces were also able to enter another military base between al-Sader and al-Madina al-Khadra in Lahej province. Reporting from this base, Al Jazeera’s Yasser Hasan said it was clear that the base was completely under the control of Popular Resistance Committees forces. “We can see al-Anad from here too,” he said, describing it as “a very strategic airbase”. “There are only small areas under Houthi control around the al-Anad base but the Resistance have been using a selection of arms and tanks to push back the Houthis,” Hasan said. Houthi fighters and their allies had been in control of al-Anad since March. Spread over 40sq km, al-Anad houses a military airport, a war college and an arms depot. It was previously used by US forces as an intelligence-gathering hub and base for drone attacks on al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch. The assault by anti-Houthi forces began after new supplies, including armoured vehicles, were delivered Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. At least 50 Houthi
fighters and troops loyal to Hadi were killed in the battle for al-Anad base, military sources told Al Jazeera. At least 23 Popular Resistance Committees fighters also died, the sources said. There was no word from the Houthis on the outcome of the battle, but the Houthi-run Saba news agency said earlier that Saudi-led air raids had repeatedly struck the military base. Al-Anad lies on the road to Taiz, the next target for the coalition after their recapture of the port city of Aden. Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, who has covered Yemen extensively, said that while the Popular Resistance Committees are against the Houthis, they form a loose umbrella group whose members do not necessarily back Hadi. “They have been forced together by the Houthi threat but they have different agendas. Many of them are southern secessionists who in fact see Hadi as a threat,” he said. The Yemeni army has been split since the Houthis’ advance last year. Some units backing Ali Abdullah Saleh, the deposed president, are fighting alongside the Houthis, while others remain loyal to Hadi. “The Saudi-led coalition is training anti-Houthi forces, providing them with new weapons to build a new army from scratch,” our correspondent said. “Their aim is to maintain Yemen united under one leader and a professional army. “But that aim will depend on how the different factions get along. Yemen remains divided along regional and sectarian ties.” The exiled government’s military says controlling al-Anad will help the push to recapture Taiz and the southern provinces. Hadi remains in Saudi Arabia, where he fled in March as the Houthis closed in on his refuge in Aden. The Houthis broke out of their northern strongholds and seized control of the capital Sanaa in September, tipping Yemen into a regional conflict. Source: Al-Jazeera
Nidhi Dutt, reporting from New Delhi, said there were reports that at least 300 people had been rescued but witnesses were giving accounts “that many people may have been washed away”. Al Jazeera’s Faiz Jamil said that seven carriages from the first train and three from the second were submerged in the Machak River following the derailments. “On Indian trains, they have classes so there could be a dozen or up to 100 people travelling per train car,” he said. Anil Saxena, a spokesperson for Indian Railways, said the bridge was partially submerged as the water level of the river was high due to heavy monsoon rain over the past two weeks. Teams of rescuers had trouble reaching the area overnight, due to the weather and the remote location of the accident. A train carrying around 100 doctors and rescuers was dispatched to the location as other medics were sent by road. Passengers on one of the trains have told local media that water was overflowing onto the tracks when it attempted its crossing. Source: Al-Jazeera

S P E C I A L of the British India after a long and tiring struggle of Muslims of India. For years since 711 AD, when Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded the Indian sub-continent, Muslims had been the rulers till subjugated by the British in 1857. Therefore, the independence in 1947 from the British yoke was a God-given opportunity to live as per the aspirations of Islamic values. From 1947 till date, Pakistan’s history has seen many ups and downs, finally losing half of it in 1971. The history of Pakistan can easily be divided into roughly 10-years brackets, each having own peculiarities and repercussions on its future.

to Independence
This part has been divided into various segments to conform to the developments that gradually took place between 1857 to1947 - the last century foothold of the British in the British India.
“Jange-e-Azadi” (War of Independence) Although the British Empire expanded, the native Indians never accepted their dominance. On May 10, 1857, Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, drawn mostly from Muslim units from Bengal, rose against the British in the Meerut garrison some 80 km from Delhi and marched to Delhi. The rising was mainly to protest against the use of the newly issued rifle bullets, alleged to have a wax sealing made of the fats of pigs that was to be removed from the teeth before use. Since pigs are forbidden in the Islam, the Muslim soldiers resented its use and took up arms against their British masters. At Delhi, they captured the famous “Lal Qila” (Red Fort) and reinstated Bahadar Shah Zafar (the last Mughul monarch) to throne. Soldiers in other garrisons also followed the suit and soon much of north and central India was plunged into a year-long insurrection against the British. The British reacted and laid a siege of the Fort, which continued for a while but finally the British owing to their access to artillery and large number of forces stormed the Fort. Bahadur Shah Zafar fled to Humayun’s tomb. The British plundered Delhi and killed many Indian soldiers (and civilians) and artillery was set up in the main mosque in the city to bombard suspected localities, specially the homes of the Muslim nobility. The British forces also arrested Bahadur Shah and days after the arrest, a British officer William Hodson shot Shah’s sons Mirza Moghul, Mirza Khizr Sultan, and Mirza Abu Bakr and shamefully presented their heads to the Shah.
Ali Garh to Muslim League As a consequence to 1857 events, the British government brought India under the direct control of Crown and a Viceroy was appointed to represent the Crown. They also increased the number of British soldiers in relation to native and allowed only British soldiers to handle artillery. In 1877 Queen Victoria took the title of Empress of India. Bahadur Shah was exiled to Rangoon, in Burma where he died in 1862, finally bringing the Mughal dynasty to an end. Although the “Jange-e-Azadi” (Liberation War) was brutally quelched, the spark for independence and throwing away the yoke of slavery at the hands of the British had been ignited. While the War of Independence had many repercussions, the intolerance towards the

NDP surges past Conser- B.C. candidates mostly in vatives,Liberals in latest poll place for federal election
The New Democrats have surged to a double-digit lead in public support, gaining more distance over the other federal parties than they have at any time in the past two years, according to a new Forum Research poll. About four in 10 Canadians surveyed (39 per cent) said they would cast their ballot for the NDP if an election were held today. The Conservatives fell from neck-and-neck status with the NDP last week to 28 per cent of voter support Sunday, while the Liberals were steady at 25 per cent. Projected onto an enlarged 338-seat House of Commons, the survey results indicate the NDP would command a solid minority of 160 seats — 10 short of a majority. The poll, conducted hours after Prime Minister Stephen Harper kicked off a marathon campaign Sunday for the Oct. 19 election, reveals the NDP, under Thomas Mulcair’s leadership, has turned its flagging fortunes around. Last December, even though it was the official Opposition, it was a distant third, according to Forum data, trailing with 17-per-cent support. The Liberals, under Justin Trudeau, were dominant at that point, with 41 per cent. The Liberals have since gone from a comfortable lead to a three-way tie for third place in the course of a year, poll results show. “I … haven’t found a single instance of the NDP having a double-digit lead before today,” Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, told the Star. “Now the government has released the hounds, as it were, people … are coming off the fence and ending up with the NDP for now,” he added in a statement. The campaign — twice the typical length — will be the longest, and likely the costliest, election in modern Canadian history. “Much can happen in that time because campaigns, and their errors, forced and unforced, do make a difference,” Boz-
inoff noted. Sunday’s poll found a distinct gender gap in the Conservative vote, which attracts more than a third of male voters (34 per cent) but fewer than a quarter of women (22 per cent). The gap works the other way for the NDP: 35 per cent of male voters and an even higher 42 per cent of women. After tying with Harper in previous polls as preferred choice for prime minister, Mulcair is now seen as the top choice, compared to Harper and Trudeau, who ranks slightly lower than both. The NDP has stated its openness to a coalition with the Liberals, who last month expressed resistance to the idea. Forum data shows more than twothirds of Liberal and NDP supporters (68 per cent) back it. In Ontario, the NDP and Conservatives are virtually tied, with the Liberals lagging by double digits. The NDP has a solid lead over the Grits in Quebec, while the Bloc Québécois and Conservatives trail. The NDP also leads in British Columbia, while the Conservatives dominate the traditionally right-wing Alberta, despite the provincial NDP’s landslide victory there in May. In the formerly Liberal fortress of Atlantic Canada, the NDP has nearly half the support (45 per cent), while the Liberals are in a solid second (38 per cent). The Forum Research poll was conducted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday using an interactive voice-response telephone survey. Weighted statistically by age, region and other variables, it polled 1,399 randomly selected Canadians age 18 or older. Results are considered accurate plus or minus three percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Source: The Star
Despite the early start to the federal election and the addition of half a dozen new ridings, the three major parties have already nominated candidates in all but a handful of B.C.’s electoral districts. Of the province’s 42 ridings, the Liberals have nominated candidates in 34, the Conservatives in 35 and the New Democrats in 39, according to tallies provided by each of the parties. Among the ridings with outstanding nomination races are Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, half of an old riding previously held by Conservative cabinet minister James Moore, where the Tories have yet to choose a candidate; and Green Leader Elizabeth May’s riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands, which is still without an NDP candidate. Richard Johnston, the Canada Research Chair in Public Opinion, Elections and Representation at the University of British Columbia, says delays in lining up a full slate of candidates have been routine in Canadian elections, and he said working them out allows electoral-district associations to fine-tune their campaign machines. “The nomination race forces you to construct a campaign team of a sort,” said Prof. Johnston. Across Canada, the Conservatives have nominated 300 of 338 candidates, the Liberals 303 and the NDP 275. The Green Party didn’t respond to questions about its progress with nominations, but its website lists 25 candidates in B.C. and 146 nationwide. Before Parliament was dissolved, the standings in B.C. were 20 Conservatives, 12 New Democrats, two Liberals, one Green and one Independent. The province previously had 36 seats. Glen Sandford, the B.C. campaign director for the NDP, said the campaigns have been focused on an Oct. 19 voting day, and the early dropping of the writ has no impact on those plans. Doug Horne, a Liberal member
of the B.C. Legislature since 2009, is seeking to run for the Conservatives in the new riding of Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam to replace Mr. Moore. (The provincial B.C. Liberal Party is not affiliated with the federal Liberals. Rather, it is a coalition of federal Conservatives and Liberals.) Although Mr. Horne has yet to be nominated, and doesn’t expect the issue to be resolved until midAugust, he isn’t worried about starting late. “It’s going to be a bit of a scramble but I am sure we’re going to be fine,” said Mr. Horne, 48. Mr. Horne is looking to return to Ottawa after working for the Brian Mulroney Progressive Conservatives in the 1980s. He plans to resign from the legislature if nominated to run federally. In Fleetwood-Port Kells, Ken Hardie was expecting to be acclaimed Tuesday as the Liberal candidate in the Surrey riding where Conservative Nina Grewal won in 2011. Ms. Grewal is seeking re-election. The NDP have nominated former RCMP inspector Garry Begg. Mr. Hardie has decided to seek the support of voters after working as a key spokesperson for TransLink, the regional transit and transportation authority, as well as in communications for the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and with the Vancouver Police Department. He joined the Liberals in the 1960s, but decided to seek elected office, he said, because he felt he has gained expertise in varied issues by being in the room for discussions on transit, policing and other matters. Mr. Hardie, who retired from TransLink in 2013 and is now 68, says his volunteer team of about 50 members have already been canvassing voters to measure support for the Liberals. “Even in the absence of a candidate, we have been deploying the ground game now for months,” he said. and a recovering American economy, he said, the Canadian dollar becomes less valuable against the greenback. On the commodity markets, the December gold contract ended at $1,090.70 (U.S.) an ounce, up $1.30 from Monday, while the September crude contract closed at $45.74 (U.S.) a barrel, up 57 cents. The September contract for natural gas closed up 6.4 cents to $2.812 (U.S.). Nakamoto said recent news reports focusing on volatility in the Chinese stock market and the Greek debt crisis ignore a more widespread sluggishness in the global market. “If the U.S. and Europe were very strong and China was doing the same thing, I don’t think it would be nearly as bad for the commodities,” he said. Nakamoto said that some see the value of the Canadian dollar as a source of national pride, and that average Canadians will feel the bite when it comes to imported goods and vacations down south. But he said the news is positive for some sectors, especially those hit by the recent slide in commodity prices. Canadian companies in the
resource and export sectors are wellpositioned to take advantage when growth picks up, Nakamoto said, because they take in revenue in American dollars and pay their costs in the cheaper Canadian currency. “It acts as a buffer,” he said. “In Canada the revenue is falling, but it’s not falling as quickly. A lot of the damage in the material sector is going to be for U.S. companies with costs in U.S. dollars.” In Canadian earnings news, Quebec-based dairy firm Saputo announced it had a smaller profit and lower sales in the first quarter of its 2016 fiscal year compared to the same period a year ago. The Montreal-area company said its net income for the three months ended June 30 was $136.4 million, down $8.9 million or 6.1 per cent from $145.3 million. Adjusted net income was $137 million, down from $145.3 million a year earlier, mainly due to a 35 per cent decline in global dairy pricing since the end of the fourth quarter that was partially offset by currency gains. Canadian dollar near 11-year low, North American stock markets waver
The Canadian dollar ended Tuesday at its lowest point since August 2004, closing more than half a cent from the previous session. The loonie closed at 75.87 cents (U.S.), down .58 cent of a U.S. cent from Friday’s close. Canadian markets were closed on Monday. The S&P/TSX composite index ended the day at 14,491.05, up 22.61 from Friday’s close. Ian Nakamoto, director of research at 3Macs, said a lack of confidence in global growth has been weighing on stock markets around the world and dragging down the Canadian dollar. In New York, the Dow Jones
industrial average closed down 47.51 points at 17,550.69, the Nasdaq index fell 9.84 points to 5,105.55 and the S&P 500 slipped 4.72 points to 2,093.32. Here in Canada, Nakamoto said, the pessimistic global forecast means investors foresee less demand for the raw materials and energy that Canada produces. “We’re in an environment where there is excess supply in those things, very low demand, and that translates into weak commodity prices and weak stocks that produce those commodities,” Nakamoto said. With less demand for Canadian energy and mining

F A I T H Narrated: Abu Huraira that a man said to the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam: “Advise me! “The Prophet said, “Do not become angry and furious.” The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, “Do not become angry and furious.” [Al-Bukhari; Vol. 8 No. 137
Knowledge is essence of religion By: SHEIKH IBRAHIM AL-TUWAIJRI Allah created man and provided him with the tools for acquiring knowledge, namely hearing, sight and wisdom. Allah says: “And Allah has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you knew nothing. And He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks (to Allah). (Qur’an, 16:78) Islam is the religion of knowledge. The first ayah of the Qur’an enjoined reading which is the key to knowledge. Allah says: “Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not.” (Qur’an, 96:1-5) In Islam, knowledge comes before action; there can be no action without knowledge, as Allah says: “So know (O Muhammad) that La ilaha illAllah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.” (Qur’an, 47:19) Allah warns every Muslim against speaking without knowledge: “And follow not (O man, i.e., say not, or do not, or witness not) that of which you have no knowledge. Verily, the hearing, and the sight, and the heart of each of those ones will be questioned (by Allah).” (Qur’an, 17:36) Emphasizing the status of knowledge and the scholars, Allah calls upon the scholars to bear witness to His Oneness: “Allah bears witness that none has the right to be worshipped but He (La ilaha illa Huwa), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He always) maintains His creation in justice. None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Almighty, the All-Wise.” (Qur’an, 3:18) Knowledge and fear of Allah may be attained by knowing His signs and creation. The knowledgeable are those who know that, hence Allah praises them: “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah.” (Qur’an, 35:28)
The scholars occupy a noble status in Isl d which hi h iis hi h th iti lam, and higher than th the position of others in this world and in the Hereafter. “Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge.” (Qur’an, 58:11) Because of the importance of knowledge, Allah commanded His Messenger to seek more of it. Allah says: “And say: ‘My Lord! Increase me in knowledge’.” (Qur’an, 20:114) Allah praises the scholars, as He says: “Say: ‘Are those who know equal to those who know not?’ It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah’s Signs and Verses).” (Qur’an, 39:9). Those who have knowledge are the quickest of people to understand the truth and believe in it: “And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this Qur’an) is the truth from your Lord, so that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility.” (Qur’an, 22:54) Islam calls us to seek knowledge. The Messenger (peace be upon him) made seeking knowledge an obligation upon every Muslim, and he explained that the superiority of the one who has knowledge over the one who merely worships is like the superiority of the moon over every other heavenly body.He said that the scholars are the heirs of the prophets and that the prophets did not leave behind dinars and dirhams, rather their inheritance was knowledge, so whoever acquires it has gained a great share. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said that seeking knowledge is a way to paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever follows a

pat in the pursuit of knowledge, Allah path wil make a path to paradise easy for him.” will (Al (Al-Bukhari, Kitab Al-Ilm, 10) Isla calls us to learn all kinds of beneficial Islam kno knowledge. Branches of knowledge vary in stat the highest of which is knowledge of status, Sha Shariah, then knowledge of medicine, then the other fields of knowledge. The best of all branches of knowledge are the sciences of Shariah through which man comes to kno know his Lord and His Prophet and religio gion. This is the knowledge with which Allah honored His Messenger; He taught it to him so that he might teach it to mankind: “In “Indeed, Allah conferred a great favor on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves, reciting unto them His Verses (the Qur’an), and purifying them (from sins by their following him), and instructing them (in) the Book (the Qur’an) and Al Hikmah [the wisdom and the Sunnah of the Prophet], while before that they had been in manifest error.” (Qur’an, 3:164) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When Allah wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion.” (AlBukhari, 69) Concerning the matter of paying attention to the Qur’an and learning and teaching it, the Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “The best of you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.” (Al-Bukhari, 4639) There is no goodness in knowledge which is not confirmed by action, or words which are not confirmed by deeds: “O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do.” (Qur’an, 61:2-3) The ummah needs knowledgeable people at all times and in all places. A nation without knowledge and scholars will live in illusions and sink in darkness. Whoever conceals this knowledge and deprives the ummah of it, Allah will place on him a bridle of fire on the Day of Resurrection, and he will deserve to be cursed, except for the one who repents. Allah says: “Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book,
they are the ones cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers. Except those who repent and do righteous deeds, and openly declare (the truth which they concealed). These, I will accept their repentance. And I am the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.” (Qur’an,2:159-160) Knowledge brings a great reward. The one who points the way to something good is like the one who does it. When the knowledgeable person dies, his reward with Allah does not cease when he dies, rather it continues to increase so long as people benefit from his knowledge. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a man dies, all his deeds come to an end except for three — his charity, beneficial knowledge or a righteous son who will pray for him.” (Muslim, 1631) If the scholar spreads his knowledge among the people, he will have a reward like that of those who follow him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever calls people to right guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow him, without it detracting from their reward in the slightest, and whoever calls people to misguidance will have a burden of sin like that of those who follow him, without it detracting from their burden in the slightest.” (Muslim, 2674) Proper understanding of Islam is one of the best of good characteristics with which a Muslim may be honored, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When Allah wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion.” Reading Qur’an, learning it and teaching it, are among the best deeds, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There should be no envy (hasad) except between two people, a man to whom Allah has given (knowledge of) the Qur’an, so he recites it night and day, and a man to whom Allah has given wealth, so he spends it (in good deeds) night and day.” (Muslim, 815) • Courtesy: islamqa.info

Why midnight of 15August1947forIndianIndependence?
Why was the midnight of 15th August 1947 chosen as the h h ddate & time i ffor IIndian di IIndependd d ence? We can divide the above question into 3 sub-questions:
Why 1947? Why 15th Aug? Why midnight? Let us pick each of the above and find out the answers
Why 1947? The awakening of masses by Gandhi and the activities of Bose behind the scenes (of strengthening Indian National Army) which had intensified during 1940s were already a cause of concern for the British. By the time the World War II had come to an end in 1945, the British were financially weak
((sources indicate they were in the verge of bbankruptcy) and were struggling to rule their oown country, let alone their colonies. The victo tory of Labour party in the Britain elections of 11945 was received very well by our freedom fighters because the Labour party had promis ised to work on granting independence to Engli lish colonies including India. L Lord Wavell initiated talks with Indian leaders ffor Indian Independence and inspite of several disagreements and disruptions, it was gaining momentum and in Feb 1947, Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the last viceroy of India to oversee the transfer of power. The plan initially was to transfer power from Britain to India by June 1948. Immediately after assuming power in Feb 1947, Lord Mountbatten had begun a series of talks with Indian leaders for a consensus. But things were not so simple especially due to conflicts between Jinnah & Nehru on the matter of partition. Jinnah’s demand for a separate nation had instigated large scale communal disturbances across India and upon passing of each day, situation was going out of control. This was certainly not something expected by Mountbatten
and hence such circumstances forced him to prepone the date of independence by almost an year, from 1948 to 1947. It was decided in the meeting (related to independence & partition) on June 3, 1947 which was aptly titled “June 3 Mountbatten plan”.
Why 15th Aug? It was Lord Mountbatten who had personally decided the date of Aug 15 because he had considered that date to be “very lucky” for his career. During the World War II, it was on Aug 15, 1945 (Japan timezone) that the Japanese Army had surrendered before him (Lord Mountbatten was the commander of the allied forces).
Why midnight? When the date of independence was decided in “June 3 plan” and announced to public, there was an outrage among astrologers across the country because 15-Aug-1947 was an “unfortunate & unholy” date according to astrological calculations. Alternative dates were suggested but Lord Mountbatten was adamant on Aug 15 (since it was his lucky date). As a workaround, the astrologers suggested the We have also included information about sub continent as a display of peace and harmony wished by both communities. Pakistan as a nation has been going through some serious crises in the past few years, ranging from unrest in Northern Areas, natural disasters across the country and energy crisis. Mainstream media and foreign governments have often been critical and unkind to the country. As Pakistani Canadians, we not only have to the responsibility of being faithful and loyal to Canada but also represent our distinct cultural identity in a positive manner. I am very proud that I am a Muslim and Pakistani Canadian, and it is my duty to promote not only the Canadian values but also our Pakistani businessmen community, that is serving Canadians day and night. I have high respect for these people who contribute to

midnight hour between Aug 14 and 15 due tto the th simple i l reason th th day d according di thatt the to English starts at 12 AM, but according to Hindu calendar, starts at sunrise. Detailed reasons can be found in this astrological analysis: The astrologers had insisted that the speech of acknowledgement of transfer of power be done within the 48 minutes window (referred to as “Abhijeet Muhurta”) which lasted between 24 minutes before and after 12:15am i.e between 11:51pm & 12:39am. Nehru had to deliver a speech only within that timeframe and an additional constraint was that the speech had to end by 12 AM, so that the holy conch (Shanka) be blown to herald the birth of a new nation at the stroke of midnight hour, and the rest is history. http://guruprasad.net/posts/why-midnight-of15-august-1947-for-indian-independence/ the economic prosperity of Canada and are also equipping their future generations with high education and skills to serve this country and making it stronger and more prosperous. At the end, I once again request to all Pakistani Canadians that be proud of your Pakistani origin, and live here with peace and dignity as ambassadors. Promote Pakistani businesses and their products and make your contribution in benefiting both Canadian and Pakistani economies. Feel free to comment on this colourful issue as your concerns and suggestions are highly appreciated for improving our quality in future. United we stand, divided we fall. BC NDP MLAs and MPs Host Eid Ul-Fitr Event in Surrey
On July 30, New Democrat Leader John Horgan joined the BC NDP’s Official Opposition South Fraser Caucus MLAs and MPs in hosting a community event to celebrate Eid Ul-Fitr at Taj Park Convention Centre in Surrey. Hundreds of people attended the celebration. It All MLAs and MPs were glad to see so many new faces attending this year’s event. They emphasizzed that understanding diversity in our community comes from learning about our neighbours and their celebrations. The Eid event included speeches from BC NDP Official Opposition Leader John Horgan as well as MP Jasbir Sandhu Surrey North, MP Jinny Sims Newton-North Delta, MLA Harry Bains Surrey-Newton, MLA Bruce Ralston Surrey-Whalley and MLA Sue Hammell Surrey-Green Timbers, MLA Raj Chouhan Burnaby-Edmonds.
MLAs and MPs also recognized the participation and support of Muslim community in NDP events for many years. They also expressed their hope that in the upcomimg federal election Muslim community will come forward and select their Member of Parlianment from NDP who always deliver their voices to Parlianment. Maulana Abdul Latif Naumani recited few verses of Quran in the beginning and made Duaa. Guests of the event enjoyed an assorted buffet of appetizers, main course dishes and desserts.

The ‘Writ Drops’
Nusrat Hussain nh.guidingstar@gmail.com Numerous journalists and other political experts have struggled in many different manners while explaining the term ‘Drop of Writ’. The one justification that appealed me the most goes like: “Writ is short for a written document and Drop means that the Prime Minister drops it on the desk of the Governor General. So, when the Prime Minister drops the writ on the desk of the Governor General then he actually drops a written document containing his advice to dissolve the parliament and put the election process in motion.” The Governor General has the right to accept or reject it. When the Governor General accepts the advice and signs it, then it ends all business in the Senate and the House of Commons, but the government continues to function. The date set for an election must be at least 36 days after the issuance of the election writ. Each party can spend a maximum of $25 million for a usual 37-day election period. That limit is increased by $675,000 for each additional day, meaning that dur-
ing an 11-week campaign, the parties will be permitted to spend more than $50-million nationally rather than the approximately $25-million that they could have spent otherwise. Individual candidates also get an additional $2,700 a day to add to their usual limit of approximately $100,000. According to Financial 2014 reports submitted with Elections Canada, the Conservatives had $11.6 million in cash in the bank, the Liberals $8 million and the NDP $2.5 million.Conservative riding associations had another $19 million, Liberal riding associations $8 million and $4.4 million held by the NDP riding associations. After reviewing the above financial stats, it is not difficult to comprehend that an earlier election call has given a clear advantage in spending more money that is available to the ruling party of Stephen Harper. Canada might not be the existing ‘utopia’ of Plato, but in my personal opinion, it has the best political system prevailing on God’s earth. The fundamental promise that all the politicians in Canada proclaim is of implementing the ‘Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ that states: ‘Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, reli-
Surrey - Newton riding Muslim Voters: Know the worth of your vote gion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.’ Canadian generations would always remain grateful to those honorable men and women who formulated the Charter in 1982. However, its true implementation continues to remain under scrutiny. There are two general methods of assessment considered by a voter in picking the candidate of his choice: Firstly; to vote for the party that is considered closer to the political beliefs of the voter—this is a popular method adopted by the voter. Under this method of voting, the voters do not worry to know about the personal capabilities of the individual candidate and place their faith in the party. Secondly; to vote for the person due to the individual capabilities of the candidate – this is a demanding method for the voter. Under this method of voting, the voters are required to reason and assess the capabilities of the individual before stamping their vote. Newton – North Delta riding remained a tight race amongst all the three major parties during the past three elections. It has been held by Gurmant Grewal of the Conservative party, Sukh Dhaliwal of the Liberal party and Jinny Sims of the New Democratic Party during the past decade. The winner in this riding was decided by less than a thousand votes in three of the last four elections. In 2011, Jinny Sims won here by less than one thousand votes and Sukh Dhaliwal was fewer than one hundred votes ahead of the third placed Conservative candidate Mani Fallon. The riding now has been changed to Surrey—Newton omitting
North Delta and by extending further into Surrey. Apparently, it would not make a big difference to the existing voting pattern. There are three candidates contesting in the riding: Sukh Dhaliwal is a former MP of the Liberal party; Jinny Sims is the current MP of NDP while, Journalist Harpreet Singh is the new face behind the Conservative banner. According to a careful estimate, there are few thousands of Muslim voters living in the new riding of Surrey—Newton. If the Muslim voters get united, then their vote will be the deciding factor in the outcome of the winner. This analysis constructs the distinguished position of the Muslim voters. It is therefore, imperative for all the Muslim voters to reason out the strength of their vote. Note: (This is intended to be a series of articles until the Election Day. I would humbly request my readers to comment in the form of letters to the editor or in a personal email to myself and I would try to address them in my next writing. A healthy debate on the subject should help in improving the understanding before casting our precious vote.)

speech titled Tryst with destiny. “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again. ” Prime Minister Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel invited Lord Mountbatten to continue as Governor General of India. He was replaced in June 1948 by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. Patel
took on the responsibility of unifying 565 princely states, steering efforts by his “iron fist in a velvet glove” policies, exemplified by the use of military force to integrate Junagadh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Hyderabad state into India. The Constituent Assembly completed the work of drafting the constitution on 26 November 1949; on 26 January 1950 the Republic of India was officially proclaimed. The Constituent Assembly elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as the first President of India, taking over from Governor General Rajgopalachari. Subsequently, a free and sovereign India absorbed two other territories: Goa (liberated from Portuguese control in 1961) and Pondicherry (which the French ceded in 1954). In 1952, India held its first general elections, with a voter turnout exceeding 62%; in practice, this made India the world’s largest democracy.

Cuisine of
PAKISTAN
From the mighty stretches of the Karakorams in the North to the vast alluvial delta of the Indus River in the South, Pakistan remains a land of high adventure and nature. Trekking, mountaineering, white water rafting, wild boar hunting, mountain and desert jeep safaris, camel and yak safaris, trout fishing and bird watching, are a few activities, which entice the adventure and nature lovers to Pakistan. Pakistan is endowed with a rich and varied flora and fauna. High Himalayas, Karakoram and the Hindukush ranges with their
alpine meadows and permanent snow line, coniferous forests down the sub-mountain scrub, the vast Indus plain merging into the great desert, the coast line and wetlands, all offer a remarkably rich variety of vegetation and associated wildlife including avifauna, both endemic and migratory. Ten of 18 mammalian orders are represented in Pakistan with species ranging from the world’s smallest surviving mammals, the Mediterranean Pigmy Shrew, to the largest mammal ever known; the blue whale.
At its simplest, Pakistani cooking today consists of staple foods which are cheap and abundant. Wheat and other flour products is the mainstay of the diet, one familiar form being CHAPATI, unleavened bread akin to a Mexican tortilla. This is made with dough prepared from whole wheat flour. Another basic food is LASSI, milk from which curds and butterfat have been removed. Vegetables, usually seasonal, lentils are commonly used. Families with larger incomes eat more meat eggs, and fruits. And the more affluent cook with GHEE, which is clarified butter, instead of with vegetable oil. From the earliest times, the imaginative - and sometimes heavy - use of spices, herbs, seeds, and flavorings and seasonings have helped cooks transform rather ordinary staple foods into an exotic cuisine. Consider some of the most common of these in wide use in Pakistan today: chilli powder, turmeric, garlic, paprika, black pepper, red pepper, cumin seed, bay leaf, coriander, cardamom, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, saffron, mace, nutmeg, poppy seeds, aniseed, almonds, pistachios, and yogurt. Their use in a wide range of pickles, chutneys, preserves, and sauces, together with curries of all descriptions and special treatment for meats, sea, food, vegetables and lentils, gives Pakistani cooking much of its distinctive character. Cultural influences, whether religious precepts, practices, and ceremonies or local traditions, or even esthetic preferences, have made their contribution toward the evolution of Pakistani cuisine. The Influence of Islam The spread of Islam to what is now Pakistan, starting in the Eighth Century, has given a basic character to the food of the people. The Quranic injunctions against eating pork or drinking alcoholic beverages has channeled tastes and appetites in other directions.
Lamb, beef, chicken and fish are basic foods, although their consumption by persons of low income is modest and often ceremonial. Some of the Muslim feasts involve special dishes. Eid-ul-Adha, which commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to obey God even to the point of being willing to sacrifice his son, is observed by the sacrifice of a goat, a lamb, or a cow from which special dishes are made. On Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of RAMADAN, the month of fasting in the Islamic Calendar, the serving of a special dessert of vermicelli cooked in milk is a must. Almond and pistachios are added as decorations as is the silver foil. The latter is so thin that it will disintegrate unless it is immediately transferred from the protective layers of paper onto the dish. Food and The Moghul Emperors A style of cookery called Moghlai’ evolved at the Moghul court and even today it remains centered in Lahore. Some latter-day and widely known survivors of court cookery are, for example, chicken tandoori, a dish in which chicken is cooked at low temperatures in special ovens called TANDOORS, and murgh musallum’ in which the whole chickens are roasted with special spices and ingredients. SHAHI TUKRA, a dessert of sliced bread, milk, cream, sugar and saffron, is another left-over from the days of the Moghuls. Fruit drinks, squeezed from pomegranates, apples, melons, and mangoes, and called SHARBAT, are an important part of the Moghlai cuisine and, indeed, the inspiration for American “sherberts.” Ceremonial occasions such as weddings have inspired a number of fancy dishes. A traditional dish at marriage feasts, for example, is chicken curry with either PILAU or Biryani. Firini, made from cream of rice and milk, is an equally traditional wedding dessert. It is served in clay saucers topped by silver foil.

As you get older, some of your friendships will start to change, and some may grow deeper. You might also begin to know many more people, although not all of them will be your close friends. Chances are, you will also start to spend more time with your friends and maybe talk on the phone more. Changes in relationships are natural but not always easy. Pakistan to Canada: The Journey Continues
By Farooq Mumtaz Rai, Vancouver It is a somewhat challenging time for Canadians of Pakistani origin for a variety of reasons. Our faith and identity is also under increased scrutiny, and regrettably, its portrayal is sometimes biased and erroneous. We need to proactively work on some appropriate actions to tackle issues facing our community, especially for the sake of our younger generation. We must combine our efforts and further develop community resources so that we are better prepared to face the present political, social, and economic environment. The recent publication of my book, “Pakistan to Canada: A Journey”, and its related events, resulted in varying dialogue. I was pleasantly surprised to experience positive reaction from many, especially those astute readers who comprehend the rationale behind writing such a book. Preserving our identity is indeed essential while we continue to contribute to the prosperity of our adopted country. I had the pleasure to converse with several young adults and folks from our community regarding various issues that we are facing here in British Columbia and Canada. It is one of the reasons why I am sharing the key points of our animated discussions. I also agreed to express these views in writing in order to stimulate further positive interest amongst the broader members of our community. I was equally encouraged that there is a fair amount of consensus in regards to what is perceived as our priorities. It has also been a learning experience for myself. I have come to recognize that there are well-informed, educated, and enlightened individuals amongst us in the community. Their concerns for our particular image are very apparent, and it is essential to see their enhanced participation in our community’s development process. I remain optimistic as I have noticed improvement. I have seen progress made by organizations where youth and women have made inroads and positive impacts. This must be emphasized and such efforts deserve our encouragement and continuous support. I agree that it remains a challenge for our community, organizations, and groups to more effectively utilize all valuable untapped resources. It has been expressed that by uniting and coordinating our efforts, we will be more effective in accomplishing our objectives. As a result of our informal discussions and the feedback provided by various sources, I compiled the following six points for consideration that address the priorities for Canadians of Pakistani origin here in British Columbia. 1) Know the history of Pakistan and our background We must know about our roots and where we came from. Our faith, beliefs and values etc. also define our unique identity. We should be familiar with the struggle and sacrifices of our elders while striving for an independent country. We are indeed fortunate to have enlightened, far-sighted, visionary, and progressive founding fathers like Allama Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam. We should also be aware of the rich history of the territory of Pakistan, which is home to some of the earliest human settlements and many major religions. Several renowned cultures and civilizations existed there. I
believe that Pakistan is a great country and as I stated in my book, “I shall always have a special place in my heart for the country I grew up in… the people of Pakistan are hardworking, hospitable, caring, and generous…We need to look at Pakistan from a broader perspective.” I emphasize this point in particular, as some have a tendency to unfairly critique our country of origin without realizing its ramifications. 2) Know the history and contribution of Muslims from the Indian subcontinent and Pakistani pioneer immigrants to Canada. Unfortunately, there is very little documented literature available about the history of pioneer Muslim immigrants of the pre-partition Indian subcontinent in Canada and their significant contribution. Similarly, there is also little documentation on early pioneer Pakistani immigrants. There are only rare and obscure footnotes or scattered references in regards to pioneer Muslim immigrants, and the general term “East Indian” often included immigrants from Pakistan. I hope our growing large Pakistani community takes some initiative to pursue this matter further for the sake of our younger generation. We as Canadians of Pakistani origin must be aware of the sacrifices made by our pioneer immigrants and this significant contribution. This recognition instills in us the value and the necessity of maintaining our unique identity, heritage, and rightful sense of belonging to this land of immigrants. Furthermore, I have previously made it clear that my book is not about the history of Pakistanis in British Columbia; rather, I tried to include the presence of Pakistanis in the province wherever I had an opportunity to do so. As I have also stated, this book is to be seen as a catalyst and motivator for other Canadians of Pakistani descent to continue with further similar initiatives. 3) Know the Canadian history and significant laws etc. Alongside the knowledge of our own history and establishment in Canada, we must also acknowledge the history of our host country. With the exception of the aboriginal people, all of us are either immigrants or the descendants of ancestors from other continents. The constitution of Canada identifies aboriginal peoples and we must understand and appreciate the historic significance and their invaluable contribution. We should become familiar with important laws and rights such as The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Multiculturalism Act, Human Rights Act, and related legislation should further clarify our responsibilities and rights. It is indeed a privilege to live in a country like Canada. We must learn to appreciate what it offers us and show our continuing commitment to make this country even stronger and prosperous to live as responsible and grateful citizens. During my discussions with some university students, it was mentioned that we need to more effectively connect with all others and fully participate in this society in order to avoid growing ethnic enclaves. It was further pointed out that we should comprehend the intent and objectives of the Multiculturalism concept. For example, our focus and apparent preoccupation with cultural portrayal of cloth-
ing, music and cuisine etc., is only one aspect of our unique background. The challenge is to instill attitudinal and behavioral change for the better, where we all can live in harmony. It will only come with a better understanding of our diverse people’s rich history and cultural values. We have strength in our diverse population if we unite and relate with one another. Solely remaining within our own limited circle will makes us more isolated and create unwarranted apprehension in the minds of fellow Canadians. 4) Must maintain our own unique identity and heritage in the Canadian Multicultural society We all know and realize the importance of maintaining our identity. As stated previously, the pioneer immigrants of Pakistani origin have indeed made significant contributions to Canada, which ought not to be overlooked. Our youth, new comers, and all Canadians need to be aware of this fact. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that we as proud Canadians of Pakistani origin are committed and actively involved in making our country ever stronger, safer, and prosperous. We are peace loving, civic minded, and united in making our adopted country the best country in the world. We appreciate those who understand and respect our sentiments and we thank them for their support and commitment. There should be no misunderstanding that we and all fair minded Canadians will not accept erroneous, biased, and unfair portrayals of our faith and country of origin. This is largely based on prejudice; however, I will concede that ignorance and lack of knowledge also give rise to suspicions and apprehension. We must grasp this void and take responsibility for interacting more effectively with our fellow Canadians so they understand us in a more positive and confident manner. We all have individual obligations and collectively attempt to do a better job in this regard. We are capable of demonstrating positive behavior by virtue of our faith and required conduct as true Muslims. In a way, our behaviour and interaction with others is a reflection of our unique identity and values. 5) Engage in volunteer and community development work Our organizations and groups have done a good job and I do appreciate that many dedicated members have devoted extensive time, energy, and resources for the betterment of our community. Our particular community is rapidly growing and there are emerging needs which presently require further attention. We must focus on devising a comprehensive plan of action and establish some priorities in this regard. One organization alone cannot fulfill all of our emerging needs. Therefore, it should be acceptable to have various organizations work on their particular priorities and needs, while also working in cooperation when required. We should also continue to support women and youth organizations in meaningful manners. Some of the indicated priories are: a) Create supportive networks and other related resources for increasingly isolated seniors who will continue to grow in numbers. b) Our youngsters and adults should have autonomy to plan social activities for their particular interests and needs. For example, there should be more activities for social, educational, recreational, career developmental, matrimonial, and networking purposes etc. c) Establish supportive groups and resources for specific needs of children, youth, women, parents, elders etc. should be developed. We should be aware of underlying
d emerging i social i l iissues and d problems bl and confronting our community. We need to face the reality of such factors and effectively implement preventative and supportive resources. This area requires proper actions and a proactive approach. Otherwise, we will encounter further serious problems down the road. d) We should utilize untapped community resources and capabilities, as we have experts and professionals who can assist in a variety of ways. e) Promote and advance our community’s professionals, business, and other related groups and their interests. We should also establish stronger ties between Canada and Pakistan in regards to trades, economic, and all other relevant fields, allowing for a stronger bilateral relationship between the two countries. f) We need to promote the advancement of communications, public relations and contemporary media capabilities within our organizations and broader community as a vital function. We should therefore strengthen all our contemporary media resourcefulness so that we could more effectively and efficiently express our particular viewpoints etc., We should seek input and guidance from our experienced and qualified community members in this vital area. Some have suggested forums and specific workshops on such matters in order to formulate well thought-out strategies and practical solutions. Social planning and community development matters must be in the forefront, which of course, requires concerted and coordinated efforts. We need to fully support our community-based organizations in their pursuit for a network of effective resources. Proactive actions are thus urgently required to meet our emerging needs. 6) Must become proactively involved in the political process and Canadian public affairs I have been privy to see how elected politicians from ethnic minorities are able to make a significant impact for the greater good of their respective community and for all Canadians. Furthermore, in view of the current challenging situation, we must not allow ill-conceived and ill-informed formulations of guidelines or legislation based on erroneous assumptions about our faith and values. We must have active presence in all political levels and fully participate in Canadian public affairs. Public service, law, and other related professions should also be pursued in view of our community’s best interest, needs, and profile. We must support and encourage our community members to contest for political representations at all levels. We should not depend on others to speak or advocate continuously on our behalf. We should support and encourage our young people and capable community members to come forward and contest in political elections. We should avail the opportunity to highlight our own capabilities and solutions regarding our specific issues and concerns in more appropriate manners. It is hoped that with better understanding and collective efforts, we can make a positive difference. InshAllah, I shall continue my journey with Allah’s forgiveness, blessings, and guidance. Ameen

Afridi, Anwar Ali stun SL with one-wicket win
Anwar Ali, Pakistan’s No. 9 batsman, waltzed into the belly of a baying Premadasa with 66 required from 35 balls, and produced a cataclysmic 46 from 17 balls, to help prise stunning victory from the clutches of almost-certain defeat. He brought the chase of 173 to sudden life when he plundered two sixes and a four off debutant Shehan Jayasuriya in the 17th over, before treating Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga with almost as much disdain to send Pakistan to within eight runs of victory. Malinga had Anwar caught behind in the penultimate over, and another wicket would also fall two balls later, but Imad Wasim was on hand to provide the finish. Binura Fernando had the task of defending six runs in the final over, but Mohammad Irfan pinched a single first ball, then Wasim socked the next delivery over the wide long-on rope to spark celebrations in the Pakistan camp. Long before even Anwar’s innings, Pakistan appeared to be tumbling to a heavy loss at 40 for 5 in the eighth over. It had been Shahid Afridi’s brutal 22-ball 45 that lit the flame that Anwar stoked into the inferno that devoured Sri Lanka. The hosts have now lost all three series in this tour, though in mitigation, they were fielding six players with two T20 international caps or fewer, in this match. Perhaps it was the inexperience that saw Pakistan gain a foothold in the match.

Afridi kept making room against the spinners early in his innings, but instead of darting it at his body, Milinda Siriwardana sent two balls at the stumps, which Afridi swung away for a four and a six to get his assault in motion, in the tenth over. More huge strikes would follow from Afridi’s blade soon after. Malinga was tonked over deep square leg in the eleventh over, and Jeffrey Vandersay was blasted over the leg-side rope twice. Sri Lanka may have felt they had quelled the Pakistan surge when they got rid of Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan within five deliveries, and the required rate had crept up to 12, by the end of the 15th over, but Anwar had the measure of the pitch and the bowling almost from the beginnings of his innings. His fifth ball, from Jayasuriya, was swatted over cow corner for six, another slog-sweep carried the ball over deep square leg, before the over was finished with a searing drive to the long-on fence. Next over he walloped two Thisara Perera full-tosses to the fence. Then with 20 runs needed from 12 balls, he carted the first three balls of Malinga in the 19th over for 12. Only towards the end of this barrage did victory even seem possible for Pakistan. They ended up getting there with four balls to spare. All this after the young Sri Lanka bowlers, backed by an enlivened, youthful fielding unit had gutted Pakistan’s
top order. Binura dismissed the openers, Mohammad Hafeez and Umar Akmal were run-out thanks to some sublime work in the field, and an advancing Shoaib Malik was beaten comprehensively by Siriwardana, in his first T20 international over. Sri Lanka will feel 172 for 7 was a score they should have defended on a slow surface. Earlier, Chamara Kapugedara eased years of frustration and sent a packed Colombo crowd into raptures as he blasted 48 not out from 25, after Sri Lanka had themselves been in some bother at 90 for 5 in the 13th over. Kapugedara built gradually to the crescen-
do, missing an attempted glide to third man first ball, before squeezing a few runs into the outfield to get himself to 11 off 13 balls. His charge began in the 17th over when he skipped down the track to send a Sohail Tanvir delivery over the long-on rope first, before repeating the stroke off Anwar Ali next over. He hit Irfan for a four and six successively, but saved his most winning shot for the final over. Anticipating a ball on the stumps from Tanvir, Kapugedara shuffled across to the off side and whipped the full-length delivery high over deep square leg for his fourth six of the innings. Though he didn’t quite manage a fifty, he left the field bat raised, soaking in rousing applause. The rest of the Sri Lanka innings had mostly been built piecemeal by the young batsmen. Jayasuriya’s 40 from from 32 balls was the most substantial top-order contribution. Siriwardana capped a fine first international tour with a useful 23 off 19. Pakistan’s one-wicket victory places them third on the T20 rankings. Sri Lanka, who are still top-placed, have some difficult issues to grapple with. Malinga’s depleted menace after surgery is chief among them. Source: Cricinfo

Mein [translated to ‘we make your own destiny’] in Karachi’s juvenile jail to draw attention to the nearly 70,000 prisoners in Pakistan who had been awaiting trial for years. The first music video of the album, ‘Laga Rahe’ was a political comment on the situation in the country at the time. The call for the restoration of judiciary, increasing inflation and crime, price hike and the real politicking of corrupt politicians all featured in the video. The title track ‘Qismat Apne Haath Mein’ is about those less privileged in society and their state of suppression. Ventures in Bollywood Akshay Kumar’s film Khatta Meetha features a song by Shehzad on its soundtrack. The song, titled “Bullshit” is a mash-up of two of Roy’s most popular songs from his 2008 album Qismat Apney Haat Mein – “Laga Reh” and “Qismat Apney Haat Mein”. In 2006, Shehzad Roy brought Canadian rockstar Bryan Adams to Pakistan for a charity concert, Rock for a Cause, to raise funds for Shehzad Roy’s Zindagi Trust and to aid the victims of the tragic October 2005 earthquake. To promote cross-border cultural exchange with India, he sang a hit duet with Indian singer Sukhbir in 2005. en.wikipedia.

Arif Lohar started singing with his father and eldest brother, Arshad Mahmood Lohar, and younger brother Tariq Lohar at an early age. He also has a younger brother called Irfan Mahmood Lohar who also lives in the UK. Arif Lohar briefly moved to acting in Punjabi movies before returning to his music career at the age of 22. Filmmaker Saif Ali Khan bought the rights to “Jugni” for use as a feature song in his Bollywood movie Cocktail. Other versions of “Jugni” have also been featured in Bollywood movies, including an adapted version that first appeared on 21st Century Jugni in Diary of a Butterfly. In 2004, Arif’s eldest brother, Dr Arshad Mahmood, formed Alam Lohar Memorial Trust (ALMT) in honor of their father. An affiliate of the trust was a production studio called ALMTV Studios. The studio was designed to raise awareness for health campaigns in the UK, including the Stop Smoking, and Healthy Mothers and Healthy Babies campaigns on behalf of the NHS. These campaigns targeted mainly Pakistani and other South Asian communities with health problems, and Arif performed concerts around the UK to promote them.
