BC. Storm: ‘Largest outage event’ in BC Hydro history Rain, wind and soggy ground mean hundreds of BC Hydro customers remain without power — days after Saturday’s windstorm tore down trees and power lines throughout the region. BC Hydro says 710,000 — half of its customers — lost power due to the storm, which it is calling “the single largest outage event” in the utility’s history. BC Hydro has nearly 500 employees from around the province working in the Metro Vancouver area to restore power, responding to 1,800 incidents since Saturday — roughly the same amount they usually address in a month. “It’s been a real challenge for us — it is probably unprecedented in our history in terms of customers impacted,” said Greg Reimer, executive vice president of transmission, distribution and

‘Friendly Opposition’ Employs Fake Hostility
Most probably, the provincial government of Sindh is not doing enough to tackle corruption, crime or terrorism. This official inaction and laziness have contributed to the existing chaos. Obviously, this means more space for those whose mandate does not go beyond tackling terrorrelated crimes. For curbing terrorism and the criminal activity in Karachi, the Interior ministry is in the picture helping the Sindh government through empowering the Rangers. The para-military forces are aggressively cleaning up as planned. Therefore, there is no justification for being critical of the excellent job done by the Rangers. All problem areas of Sindh are under active surveillance by the responsible security personnel who have a workable strategy to get rid of thugs, thieves, murderers and terrorists. Those who oppose the operation actually are involved in doing the disservice and a disfavor to peace and security of the law-abiding citizens. In fact, the people of Karachi are very happy with Rangers’ efficiency. The citizens want them to continue the operation till its logical ending. Any compromise at this stage will jeopardise the whole operation and plunge us into greater instability. On the other hand, the Pak military is successfully fighting to eliminate terrorism for good, and its operation zarb-e-azb is about to conclude soon with great results. Other ground reality is the ongoing fake democracy is based on politics of reconciliation (MUK MUKA). However, the former president Asif
Ali Zardari feels a little irritated, and he reacted to the recent arrests of his party members by the federal institutions in Sindh. He blames PM Nawaz Shareef for having reverted to politics of the nineties. Dr. Asim Hussain (Zardari’s associate) was taken into custody by the Rangers under a law strictly formulated for the pursuit of terrorists; he was detained under the Anti Terrorism Act of 1997. The Act was passed as an amendment on October 2013 at the start of the Karachi operation, specifically to empower the Rangers to detain and question those suspected of being involved in terrorism. So everything is going according to law. Nevertheless, expressing his resentment over the actions taken by the Rangers, the NAB and the FIA, Zardari said in a statement that Sharif had not learnt anything from the past, warning him of dire consequences for what he termed ‘politics of vengeance.’ Indeed, the focus should be to curb terrorism in Karachi, but there are many groups, involved in target killing, kidnapping, extortion and land grabbing and there is financial terrorism as well where national wealth is being stolen from the people. Such crimes are merging with politics. If the corruption is used to fund the terrorism, no one should be spared after the accusation is proved in the court of law, civil or military. Since, Pakistan, as a country, is marred by the ruling mafia facilitated by the friendly opposition which indicates their lack of patriotism towards people. Be it Zardari era or Nawaz era, the deteriorating state
of the general public keeps getting uglier day by day, leading to a bad to worse scenario---which must stop now, as enough is enough. How the hell India’s RAW was able to infiltrate in Pakistan and Hussain Haqqani was letting the non Pakistanis slip into Pakistan without involving the foreign office? How come, Nawaz Shareef is so inclined towards India inspite of Modi’s hatred towards the Muslims and Pakistan? The irony is the party in power manages to stay in power with the help of friendly opposition as if their agenda is no more than that of completing five year term. Shamelessly, the political leadership seems to be on the same page when it comes to maligning the military. They even ask for foreign intervention to protect them from the military. This is why, it makes us laugh when Zardari contends the PPP stands fully with the Pakistan Army in the ongoing war against terrorism. “We salute our jawans (brave soldiers) who have given ultimate sacrifice in this war.” This statement is just a bluffing. Dr Asim Hussain has been charged with helping finance terror, it’s a very serious allegation at this point in time. Maybe, the Rangers have collected substantial evidence before taking such a step. Hopefully, the truth will be made public later. Recommended: The arrests of economic terrorists must continue without discrimination across the country. Had Mr Zardari been concerned about the model town fiasco and the
money laundering of the minister he should have taken a stand about it at that time, why is he yelling now when his corrupt cronies are being picked up? Take a look at the way the former pm Gillani got away with his arrest. It’s clear that the NAB is after bigger fish, yet the problem is far from over as nothing much is likely to happen unless the real heavy weights are nabbed first without any opposition from any quarter. Also, it’s important to open Asgher Khan Case on merit for netting another financial lot of big fish. Accommodating unethical convenience: “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours,” is the understanding between the political parties that are taking turns. Unfortunately, they have nothing to do with serving the people of Pakistan. All they have is the crazy craving for political empowerment so that they can continue looting the national resources till the exchequer and the national resources run out. The financial vampires busy for their own selfish ends must now be hunted down, sooner the better. It will be a fatal mistake to stop or slow down the momentum of the Karachi operation. Maintaining the current momentum is in the best interest of the people and the country and tackling financial terrorism will help the country get out of major trouble faster than expected. ‘‘SHAME & SADNESS’ ! By: Gulshan Aalani A former New Hampshire prep. School 17 yr. old student accused of raping a15 yr old freshman girl as part of a ‘Campus tradition’. Convicted of 3 counts of misdemeanor S-Xual assualt endangering the welfare of a minor; and separate Felony count of using the Computer through email to seduce a minor, manipulated the freshman to meet him in a secluded attic on Campus; charges that carries up to 7 yrs. Prosecutors said: He did it as part of the ritual called the ‘Senior Salute’, in which graduting senior try to have illegal S-X act with underclassmen. These young students 15 and 17 yrs both can be considered minor, not fully aware of the danger of right and wrong, and blindly followed the most toxic ritual of ‘Senior Salute’ established by the educated grown ups. In fact both are the victims of the un-ethical practice allowed by the Boarding academy the prestigious St. Paul’s School, and so the School too should be found guilty of such misleading dangerous practices for the young people for whom it is just fun and pride to show off. Let us say this age kids are naive and ignorant and needs the grown ups to guide them to the
Conservatives Playing Balderdash While The Economy Flounders By: Liberal Party of Canada Balderdash is the classic dictionary game in which players invent word definitions to try to fool the others. It is fun at a party, but frightening when it comes from a Prime Minister. Either way, it is no solution for an economic downturn. Today, Statistics Canada released a new round of economic numbers that show Canada is in recession. The report confirms what Stephen Harper refuses to admit: that the Canadian economy – and growth for the middle class – remains bleak. Jonathan Wilkinson, Liberal Candidate for North Vancouver said: “The Conservatives are playing word games, when they need to be fixing Stephen Harper’s failed plan.” An Oxford-educated Rhodes Scholar, Wilkinson noted: “Regardless of any ‘technical definitions’ of a recession,
today’s economic news is something that too many British Columbians have been feeling the pain from for far too long.” “Simply put, Stephen Harper’s economic plan has failed. And despite this, Tom Mulcair has adopted it.” Both Stephen Harper and Thomas Mulcair do not think we need to invest to get us out of this economic downturn. Despite Harper’s promise of balanced budgets, he has run eight straight deficits and has the worst growth record of any Prime Minister since the Great Depression. Thomas Mulcair is holding the Conservative line that he will balance the budget at any cost – but he won’t say how. Mulcair has already broken his promises on health care and public transit, and he will back away from more of his empty promises, like on child care. A Liberal government will invest in families, so Canadians can make ends meet; in roads and bridges, so our commutes are faster and safer; and in clean energy, so we can build a cleaner environment for our children and grandchildren. Only Liberals have the strong plan and team to build an economy that works for everyone. Only Liberals are willing to invest in the kind of growth that Canadians desperately need.

LoC firing threat to international peace, says PM
BAGH: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said here on Wednesday that the hearts of Pakistanis beat in unison with Kashmiris and warned that the incidents of firing across the Line of Control (LoC) were a threat to international peace. “Our patience should not be taken as our weakness... desire for peace is our strength,” he told a gathering after inaugurating a string of development projects in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The prime minister said recent incidents of firing from across the LoC and death of civilians had shaken the conscience of the international community. He termed such incidents a threat to international peace and said Pakistan would continue to raise its voice against human rights violations and atrocities at all international forums. “We cannot forget those who lost their lives along the LoC.” Pakistani citizens and their property along the Working Boundary had also been attacked, Mr Sharif added. Projects for 2005 earthquake survivors in Azad Kashmir inaugurated The prime minister said Pakistan was playing an effective role against terrorism and would continue its fight till elimination of terrorists from its soil. He said all those supporting terrorism would also be dealt with. The Zarb-i-Azb operation was gaining success and would continue till all objectives were achieved, the prime minister observed. He said incidents of kidnapping for ransom, targeted killing and extortion in Karachi had decreased to a negligible level and street crimes would also be curbed. During his daylong visit to Bagh, he inaugurated 42 projects in the health, education and basic infrastructure sectors. “These projects will benefit three million people in Azad Jammu and Kashmir,” Mr Sharif said. The total estimated cost of the projects is Rs2.7 billion. The prime minister announced that a modern cardiac centre would be set up in Bagh and more such hospitals would also
be opened in AJK. He asked the Punjab government to urgently build a quality road from Kotli Sattian to Kalyari Bridge saying that a bridge over River Jhelum would also be built at Khapdar. The projects include schools, basic health units, administrative offices, roads, drinking water, a memorial, a bus terminal and a sports complex in Bagh, Poonch and Muzaffarabad areas that were devastated by the 2005 earthquake. Addressing a gathering at the newly inaugurated sports complex in the town, he said he was keen to see widespread development across AJK and would have been more happy to invite local people to see the government’s efforts for their wellbeing. He promised that the pace of development would accelerate and schools, colleges, healthcare units and roads would spring up across the valleys and hills of Azad Kashmir. The prime minister lauded the high literacy rate in AJK and said his government was committed to increasing it. He said the newly inaugurated projects would provide better services to the people and also create jobs and business opportunities that would boost local economy. He said the water supply scheme in Bagh would cater for the town’s needs for the next 30 years. Prime Minister Sharif said the Oct 8, 2005, earthquake had devastated vast areas, but also proved to be an opportunity to build better. He said Pakistan had no experience of coping with a calamity of this magnitude, but the people had risen to the challenge with courage and commitment, with help from the armed forces and the international community. Nawaz Sharif praised the performance of the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority and said the rebuilt projects could be compared with those in the developed world. The prime minister paid tribute to the earthquake survivors who had worked hard to rebuild their homes despite having suffered heavy personal and physical losses.—APP
MQM opts out of dialogue again, says resignations final
KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in an emergency press conference called early Thursday morning announced its decision to withdraw from talks with the government once again, alleging that the government was not serious about the dialogue process. The party had simultaneously resigned from the National Assembly, Senate and the Sindh Assembly last month over what it said were “excesses” committed by security forces against its workers and members during the Rangers-led operation in Karachi. Following the party’s resignation from the three legislative floors, the government was reluctant in accepting the resignations and tasked Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam –Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to hold talks with MQM in an attempt to persuade the party to withdraw its resignations. But talks broke down abruptly almost immediately after they began when an assassination attempt was made in Karachi on MQM MNA Rashid Godil, whose driver was killed in the gun attack. The attack had happened as Maulana was holding talks with an MQM delegation at Nine Zero in Karachi. Subsequently, after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s recent visit to Karachi, MQM had announced it would not continue dialogue on the matter of resignations anymore, saying it will instead focus on relief work and the “creation of a new province.” But the government, through Maulana Fazl, was able to break through yet again, convincing MQM to come back to negotiations. In a joint press conference with federal minister Ishaq Dar and an MQM delegation led by Farooq Sattar, Fazl announced that a grievances redressal committee would be formed to address all of MQM’s reservations. Addressing reporters on Thursday, MQM leader Farooq Sattar said the government’s nonseriousness had pushed the party to withdraw from the dialogue process, adding that

“in the current scenario dialogue is useless.” Take a look: MQM lawmakers tender resignations He said the government had failed to constitute a grievances redressal committee to address concerns over the “forced disappearance of 150 party workers, extrajudicial murders of 45 activists and justice for thousands of workers who have been killed.” Sattar said “baseless stories are being created to put MQM on a media trial,” adding that the party had been “politically victimised.” Also read: MQM ‘disappointed’ by PM’s Karachi visit He said that there was an unannounced ban on MQM and the party’s role had been eliminated from mainstream politics. The MQM leader went on to say the party had approached all forums – including the judiciary and the federal government – with its reservations but to no avail. “During the last 20 days since we tendered our resignations, the situation has been at a stand still,” he added. Sattar said during dialogue with the government, MQM had raised three core issues: the ban on MQM’s political activities, relief activities and speeches of party chief Altaf Hussain. Sattar was of the view that these issues were not up for discussion and had to be addressed by the federal government. Know more: After talks with govt, MQM agrees to review resignations: Fazl “All our political offices have been closed. Raids are being conducted on our programs and our role in politics has been halted. What would we do in the assemblies?” He said the party had decided after lengthy internal deliberations to not pursue dialogue anymore, asserting that resignations from all three legislative floors were final. Farooq Sattar demanded that the government accept the resignations of MQM’s legislators. : Dawnnews.com

Obama nearing deal with Congress over Iran
US President Barack Obama has almost enough support from senators to block Republican attempts to derail a deal with Iran over its nuclear programme. On Tuesday, two more Democratic senators came out in favor of the deal giving the White House 33 votes in favour of it, one vote shy of what is needed to make any attempts to kill it nearly impossible. The deal, which was officially reached July 14 in Vienna between Iran and the so-called P5 plus one countries (the US, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France
and Germany), would lift decades-old sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran’s promise not to develop nuclear weapons. The deal still needs to be ratified by the US Congress which is set to debate it when they return from their summer break next week. Congress must vote on the deal by September 17. Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Chris Coons of Delaware said on Tuesday they believe it is a deal worth supporting in spite of their own scepticism that Iran will hold up its end of the bargain. “Frankly, this is not the agreement I had hoped for,” said Coons. But if the US Congress rejects it, “the path forward is even less clear,” he added. Although the US Congress is currently controlled by the Republican Party, who are overwhelmingly against the agreement, one third of US senators (34 votes) can block any attempts to reject it clearing a path for its approval. Meanwhile, a new poll shows US citizens are almost evenly divided on the deal with 55 per cent saying they support it. Source: Al-Jazeera
Canada’s economy shrank for a second straight quarter, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada, putting the country in a technical definition of a recession, despite positive growth in June. The country’s real gross domestic product declined by an annualized rate of 0.5 per cent in the AprilJune period of 2015, after falling by 0.8 per cent in the quarter from January-March, meaning Canada’s GDP has been in decline for two straight quarters. But despite the overall second-quarter GDP decline, StatsCan reports 0.5 per cent growth in June, after five straight months of negative growth. Exports, household consumption, and international trade helped prop up the GDP in June, even as business investment declined by 8.0 per cent. “That’s definitely ending a bad quarter on a positive note,” Tim Quinlan, a U.S. economist with Wells Fargo Securities, told BNN on Tuesday. Quinlan said he’s not concerned about Canada’s long-term growth, despite the country’s GDP meeting the unofficial definition of a recession: two consecutive quarters of decline. Quinlan called that definition a “guideline,” not a rule. “Canada is not without its problems, but I wouldn’t characterize it as an economy that’s in recession right now,” he said, adding that he expects growth to pick up in the third quarter. Samantha Azzarello, vicepresident and global marketing strategist for
JPMorgan Asset Management, also shared Quinlan’s optimism going forward. “We’re forecasting an uptick in Canadian growth in the second half of the year,” Azzarello told BNN, explaining that her company is “bullish” on Canadian exports, which she expects to see surge due to the weak Canadian dollar. Leslie Preston of TD Economics called the 0.5 per cent growth in June a “very healthy gain” that will carry forward into the second half of the year. “That sets the third quarter up for what we expect to be a solid gain, north of 2 per cent,” Preston told CTV News Channel. Don Drummond, an economist and adjunct professor at Queen’s University, says the definition of a recession sprang from a U.S. study done “decades ago,” which found that recessions “tend to share that as a common feature.” It is not, however, an official definition. “It’s one of those things, somebody said it once and it’s stuck ever since, but it really doesn’t have any official standing as a definition,” Drummond told CTV’s Canada AM on Tuesday. Drummond said the real issue at hand is that Canada’s economy is weak right now. “It really doesn’t matter if it’s slightly below zero (per cent growth) or slightly above zero – it’s weak,” Drummond said. The GDP report comes at a bad time for Stephen Harper, who has been attacked from all sides for his economic record in the middle of a federal election campaign. The Conservative leader has avoided using the “R” word, despite his opponents hammering at him with it. During the Aug. 6 leaders debate, for instance, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair slammed Harper for his government’s economic record. “Stephen Harper is the only prime minister in Canadian history who, when asked about the recession during his mandate, gets to

Palestinians build case against Israel at ICC
Tensions remain high in the occupied West Bank as the Palestinian Authority (PA) continues to build up its case against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing Israeli security forces of gross human rights abuses, including a number of recent incidents. However, analysts question whether the PA has the political will or the mandate to follow through with challenging Israel at the ICC. “[The PA] will come under too much economic and political pressure, both regionally and abroad,” political scientist Samir Awad of Birzeit University, located near Ramallah, told Al Jazeera. “Furthermore, the PA can’t talk in the name of all Palestinians, as they don’t speak for Hamas, the unity government has failed, and PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ mandate expired long ago.” Analysts have also been questioning whether the preliminary investigation into alleged Israeli war crimes, which is currently under way, will actually see Israel held accountable before the international community. The PA applied to join the ICC in June 2014 and became a member this past April. The ICC began a preliminary investigation into Israel’s alleged war crimes on May 16. ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will review the documents provided by the PA to decide whether individual Israelis should be charged with war crimes. The process could take several years. Due to an uptick in violence in the West Bank over the past few months, however, several other counts have recently been added to the PA’s ICC file. The murders of Palestinian infant Ali Dawabsheh and his father Saad, in the West Bank village of Duma, following an arson attack on their home by Israeli settlers in July, is one such case. Another case involves Laith al-Khaldi, 15, who was killed when Israeli soldiers shot him in the back after he threw stones at a military tower near Birzeit during clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian youth protesting against the Dawabsheh killings. “President Abbas said he would add the murder of our son Laith to the ICC file,” said Samar al-Khaldi, who lives in Jiffna village, near Ramallah. Anger at mounting Palestinian casualties has spilled into regular protests and clashes in the Palestinian territories. More than 25 say, ‘Which one?’” Mulcair said. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau quickly responded to the recession news on Tuesday morning, tweeting an attack on Harper and calling for “real change.” Later in the day, he said the StatsCan numbers show that “Stephen Harper’s economic plan has failed.” During a campaign stop in Burlington, Ont., on Tuesday, Harper was quick to focus on June’s strong growth numbers. “This confirms the renewed growth that most had been predicting,” Harper said. “It is good news.” The day before, Harper was asked twice by reporters how he would personally define a recession. Harper, who has a master’s degree in economics, answered that he hadn’t “gotten into that debate.” Instead, he said Canada has experienced a “contraction that has been focused almost entirely in one particular section of the economy, particu-
Palestinians have been killed by Israeli security forces since the beginning of the year, with four deaths in July alone. Many of the deaths involved Palestinians being shot in the back or killed under dubious circumstances that are disputed by Palestinians and the Israeli soldiers involved. Over a three-day period in August, “lone wolf” revenge stabbing attacks by individual Palestinians against Israeli soldiers resulted in the shooting deaths of two of the perpetrators, and the injury of a third. In light of the rising unrest, Israeli military authorities recently tightened their rules of engagement, ordering troops not to shoot at Palestinian protesters unless their lives were endangered. Both the Israelis and the PA are so worried about the outbreak of a third Intifada, or uprising, that Abbas met Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog on Tuesday in Ramallah to discuss how to prevent more violence. Disgruntled Palestinians commenting about the meeting on Facebook, in discussions with Al Jazeera, and during protests in Ramallah, pointed out that Abbas seemed more interested in his own political survival - and that of the PA - than in pursuing Israel at the ICC, especially at a time when the Palestinian street increasingly believes peace talks with Israel are pointless. “We are sick of Abbas and his cronies. They only care about their own power and money, not about their people,” Ramallahbased protester, Samer, told Al Jazeera. But Abbas also faces economic and political pressure, even if he chooses to pursue the ICC case. In an effort to circumvent possible war crime charges, Israel has expanded its own investigations into the Gaza war, as the ICC does not prosecute countries or leaders who are sanctioned by their own legal systems. However, Elayyan pointed out that most of Israel’s recent investigations involved petty crimes, such as stealing credit cards from Palestinians in Gaza, or blaming rogue Israeli soldiers for carrying out atrocities as exceptions to the rule. For its part, Israel will have to decide whether it will cooperate with the ICC. If it refuses to do so, it risks further isolating itself and inviting more international condemnation. Source: Al-Jazeera larly in the energy sector.” He said 80 per cent of the overall economy has grown, but oil prices have meant bad news for Canada’s energy sector. “I think it’s more important to describe the reality of the situation, rather than labels,” he added, speaking in French. Economists predict the recession will be short-lived, with Canada’s economy anticipated to grow at an annual pace of 1.5 per cent in the third quarter. Drummond, a former chief economist at TD Bank, said it’s important to keep in mind that the StatsCan numbers are a shred of “history,” since Tuesday’s report is on growth in June, not right now. He added that while the economy is weak, employment and housing prices have “held up reasonably well.” Source: CTV News

Current El Nino climate event Poll Tracker: Margin nar‘among the strongest’ rows again in 3-way race
The current El Nino weather phenomenon could be one of the strongest on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The event occurs when the waters of the Pacific become exceptionally warm and distort weather patterns around the world. Researchers say parts of the Pacific are likely to be 2C warmer than usual. The WMO says that this year’s event is strengthening and will peak by the end of this year. The strongest El Nino on record was in 1997-98, but there were events that were significantly above the norm in 1972-73 and again ten years later in 1982-83. Scientists say that the event now underway is sending sea temperatures in parts of the Pacific to levels not seen since the late 1990s. In a statement the WMO said that this El Nino was gathering strength. “Models and expert opinion suggest that surface water temperatures in the east-central tropical Pacific Ocean are likely to exceed 2C above average, potentially placing this El Nino event among the four strongest events since 1950,” it said. The WMO says that patterns of cloudiness and rainfall near the international dateline developed during the second quarter of this year and have been well maintained. These patterns are considered essential in triggering El Nino’s global climate impacts which are more likely to be felt over the next six to eight months. “Compared to the last major El Nino event in 1997-1998, there is much more information available,” said Maxx Dilley from WMO. “We have better
models and are much more prepared.” “It is a test case for the early warning systems and climate information systems of WMO members and we are hoping that will be of assistance to some of the affected countries,” said Mr. Dilley. The phenomenon can alter established weather patterns in different parts of the world, bringing severe drought to parts of Asia while at the same time bringing heavy flooding to some parts of North America. It can increase flooding in the Horn of Africa while making Southern Africa drier. The events are likely to lead to a decrease in storm events in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico and an increase in storminess in the eastern Pacific. This El Nino has also impacted the South Asian monsoon. “We are seeing that the Indian monsoon right now is almost 12% below normal. There is only a month left of the summer monsoon season making it difficult to recover,” said WMO’s El Nino expert Rupa Kumar Kolli. “That was the kind of early warning information we can extract from the El Nino signal and it helps policy makers to prepare,” he said. Currently, the Pacific is seeing a surge of hurricane activity, with three category four strength tropical storms swirling around the Hawaiian Islands. Researchers say that these hurricanes can disrupt the predominant easterly trade winds that are found along the equator. This disruption allows more heat to build up in the eastern part of the Pacific, adding more fuel to stormy conditions. But researchers cautioned that the scale of impacts, especially in the northern hemisphere, is very hard to read because there is also an Arctic warming effect seen in the Atlantic jet stream. “The truth is we don’t know what will happen. Will the two patterns reinforce each other? Will they cancel each other? Are they going to act in sequence? Are they going to be regional? We really don’t know,” David Carlson, the director of the World Climate Research Programme, told news agencies. Source: BBC News
BC Storm.... Continued from Page 1 customer service at the utility. “Those folks still without power are in our minds every day … everybody that isn’t on is a concern to us and we’re working hard to do that.” The worst-hit areas were Surrey, Coquitlam and Abbotsford, while neighbourhoods in Burnaby, New Westminster, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission and White Rock have also been without power for three days. Stormy weather has slowed progress for BC Hydro crews, Reimer said, making some sites difficult to access and causing new outages. Monday night in Surrey, 2,000 customers who had their power restored lost it again when winds blew branches off a tree into a power pole, causing the electrical equipment
to catch fire, he said. In Coquitlam, high water levels have made it difficult to work on power lines near the Coquitlam River. In some locations, the ground is so muddy and saturated with water that heavy equipment can’t get in, so crews have to use more timeconsuming methods. “Once you get down to the last few thousand restorations in any storm … it’s always the hardest ones and the ones that take the most time.” The BC Hydro website, which is operational again after crashing during the storm, had estimated many of those customers would have electricity back by noon today. It appears the federal horse race may have reverted to its three-headedness again, as two new polls suggest a narrowing of the gap separating the three parties. But one of the surveys provides some insight into what and who is capturing voters’ attentions, and what effect it might be having. The CBC Poll Tracker still has the NDP in the lead with 33.5 per cent support, followed by the Conservatives at 29.1 per cent and the Liberals at 27.3 per cent. The Greens are averaging 5.5 per cent support, while the Bloc Québécois stands at 15.3 per cent support in Quebec. This is a bit of a reversion to where things stood before the publication of two polls that suggested strong numbers for the New Democrats. These surveys by Forum Research and the Angus Reid Institute, both out of the field a week ago, put the NDP at 40 and 37 per cent support, respectively, among eligible voters. It boosted the party in the average, but the four polls that have been published since have put the NDP between 31 and 34 per cent support. That is where the party was polling prior to the release of these two bullish surveys. The two newest polls both show a very close race. The survey by the Innovative Research Group put the NDP at 32 per cent, the Conservatives at 30 per cent and the Liberals at 27 per cent. That gap of five points between the three parties was down by three points from Innovative’s previous pre-campaign poll, as the NDP dipped and the Liberals gained (though both marginally so). The poll by Abacus Data published Monday had the gap even closer, at 31 per cent for the NDP, 30 per cent for the Conservatives and 28 per cent for the Liberals. Here again, with the NDP down and the Liberals up, the margin between first and third dropped by six points from Abacus’s prior survey. The Innovative poll looked into a number of different issues beyond the horse race. Of particular interest was the questions concerning whether Canadians had read, heard, or seen anything about the leaders in the few days before the poll was taken. By this meas-
ure, Stephen Harper was grabbing the most attention: 60 per cent said they had read, heard, or seen something about him, compared with 52 per cent for Justin Trudeau and 41 per cent for Tom Mulcair. But not all publicity is good publicity. The main story that got Harper’s name into the news was the Duffy trial, with more than onethird of people who had heard something about the Conservative leader hearing it in that context. And what they did hear was damaging: only four per cent said it gave them a more favourable opinion of Harper and the Conservatives, while 65 per cent said it gave them a less favourable view. Worse, among unaligned voters (those who say they do not identify with any of the main parties) the days preceding the poll had a negative effect on 54 per cent, with just six per cent saying it had had a positive effect. Three issues dominated what Canadians had read, seen, or heard about Trudeau: his position on veteran pensions, his plan to increase taxes on the wealthy to give tax cuts to the middle class, and advertisements about him (paid for by both the Conservatives and Liberals). Overall, it was a good period for him: 39 per cent of Canadians said what they had read, seen, or heard about Trudeau gave them a more favourable opinion of him, while 23 per cent left with a less favourable opinion. For Mulcair, his child-care plan captured the most attention. But the effect was a wash: 29 per cent said it left them with a more favourable view of Mulcair and the NDP, and 29 per cent said it left them with a less favourable view. Similarly, Mulcair left 31 per cent of unaligned voters with a more positive view, and 32 per cent with a less favourable one. These numbers do seem to back up the overall trends that the voting intentions polls are showing: marginally positive for the Liberals, modestly negative for the Conservatives, and stable for the NDP. The campaign has yet to shake things up in any significant way. Source: CBC News

F A I T H Narrated: Abu Huraira The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.”
[Al-Bukhari; 2- Belief- 8 )
Purity of heart only by remembering God By: Harun Yahya My heart is pure, so Allah will forgive me …” we often hear such words. This is a distorted logic, an excuse people make in order to suppress the voice of their conscience. It is an invalid excuse emanated from worldly desires. The way people suppress their consciences prevents most of them from genuinely turning to Allah and which keeps them from abiding by the moral values commanded by Him. What does this “purity of heart” actually mean? According to Qur’anic moral values, ‘not doing any harm to anyone’ is not justification for ignoring responsibilities revealed to us by Allah? A sound heart While mentioning about people’s heart, Allah says: “But only he (will prosper) who brings to Allah a sound heart.” (Qur’an, 26:89) The Islamic concept of a “sound heart” is not just the pureness of heart that some people understand it to be, for the Qur’an defines a sound heart as submitting fully to Allah. People with sound hearts, in the Qur’anic sense, have faith in Allah, observe the limits and prohibitions that He has established, and submit to Him fully. There is no other form of a sound heart, for the Qur’an defines a person with a sound heart as someone who constantly brings Allah to mind
and feels at peace with His remembrance. The following verse makes this quite clear: “Those who believe and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of Allah. Only in the remembrance of Allah can the heart find peace.” (Qur’an, 13:28) A very important characteristic of believers is sensitivity of the heart that enables them to derive pleasure from the Qur’an’s morality and to feel a great pleasure and peace in obeying Allah. Allah describes this sensitivity as ‘Allah’s guidance’: “Allah has sent down the Supreme Discourse, a Book consistent in its frequent repetitions. The skins of those who fear their Lord tremble at it, and then their skins and hearts yield softly to the remembrance of Allah. That is Allah’s guidance, by which He guides whoever He wills... (Qur’an, 39:23) Consequently, a sound heart in the Islamic context means a heart that is purified from all forms of impurity that draws one away from Allah. Such people stay away from worldly greed, selfishness, fears, and insecurity. As a result, they do not become attached to any person or thing other than Allah or feel a type of love for them that is independent of Allah. It is of course important and excellent for someone to be known in the community for “being good and having a pure heart.” However, basing oneself on the importance in society of “having a pure heart” and then saying, “I do no harm to anyone, and even help them on occasion, when necessary,” does not mean that one is fully living by
UDHIYA (QURBANI) What is Udhiya? ‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic word meaning “blood sacrifice”, and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word “Qurban” which literally means an act performed to seek Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. The sacrifice of an animal has always been a recognised form of worship in many religions, but in the ‘Shariah’ (Islamic sacred law) of The Last and Final Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him) the sacrifice of an animal has been recognised as a form of ibadah (worship) during the three days of the month Zul Hijjah, namely the 10th, 11th,and 12th . This is to commemorate the unparalleled sacrifice offered by the Prophet Sayyidna
Ibrahim, Alayhi Salam, when he, in pursuance to a command of Allah Ta’ala conveyed to him in a dream, prepared himself to slaughter his beloved son, Sayyidna Isma’il, Alayhi Salam, and actually intended to do so, but Allah Ta’ala the Almighty, after testing his submission, sent down a sheep and saved his son from the logical fate of slaughter. It is from that incident that the sacrifice of an animal became an obligatory duty to be performed by every Muslim who has the means to do it. On who is it obligatory? Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is of sound mind - mature (has reached the age of puberty), Muqeem (i.e. he is not a traveller in terms of Sharia) Possesses the amount of 612,36 grams of

the moral values of the Qur’an. In addition, thinking in that way is nothing more than self-deception. An act or an attitude that is accepted as a good deed by a society remote from the Qur’anic morality, although it is not based upon the Qur’an’s values, may not be worthy in Allah’s sight. The main criterion that renders a deed good and worthy in His sight is the degree of its conformity with Allah’s good pleasure. The following verses are quite explanatory: “Do you make the giving of water to the pilgrims and looking after the Masjid Al-Haram the same as having iman in Allah and the Last Day and doing jihad in the Way of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah. Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.” (Qur’an, 9:19) It is not devoutness to turn your faces to the East or to the West. Rather, those with true devoutness are those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, the Angels, the Book and the Prophets, and who, despite their love for it, give away their wealth to their relatives and to orphans and the very poor, and to travellers and beggars and to set slaves free, and who establish prayer and pay alms; those who honor their contracts when they make them, and are steadfast in poverty and illness and in battle. Those are the people who are true. They are the people who guard against evil. (Qur’an, 2:177) Fear of Allah People may be known as “good” by giving food to animals they see in the street or getting along well with their neighbors. And
this is of course good behavior. But the way to avoid eternal suffering in Hell and the way to attain the approval and mercy of Allah lies not in being known as “a good person,” but in being a true believer in the manner described by Allah in the Qur’an. Living by Qur’anic moral values bestow freedom from worldly values and all forms of dependence felt towards other people. A believer with such moral values seeks the approval of Allah, not that of other people. He fears Allah alone and knows that all things are under His control. Fear leads him to scrupulously adhere to the bounds set by Allah and silences all excuses proffered by worldly desires. The awed respect felt for Allah and the sincere efforts made to attain His approval are the basis of Qur’anic moral values. Almighty Allah has revealed this as follows: Who is better: Someone who founds his building on fear of Allah and His good pleasure, or someone who founds his building on the brink of a crumbling precipice so that it collapses with him into the Fire of Hell? Allah does not love wrongdoers. (Qur’an, 9:109) The writer has authored more than 300 books translated in 73 languages on politics, religion and science.

Allah Ta’ala, The Most Wise says: «It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allâh, it is your piety that reaches Him. Indeed He has subjected them (animals) to you so that you may glorify Allah for guiding you, and give glad tidings to those who excel in good.» (Quran-22:37)
The Noble Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said: «For every hair that is on the sacrificial animal, one reward is recorded for the person making the Qurbâni.» «There is nothing dearer to Allâh during the
The sacrifice is accepted by Allâh before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart.» (Ibn Majah). “Whoever has the capacity to sacrifice and does not do so, should not come to the place where the Eid prayer is offered.” (Ibn Majah). At least 12 refugees, including children, have drowned after two boats left Turkey trying to reach Greek island of Kos. At least 12 people believed to be Syrian refugees have drowned after two boats sank after leaving southwest Turkey for the Greek island of Kos, a senior Turkish naval official has said. Inside Story - Refugees and Europe’s dilemma The two boats, carrying 23 people, had set off separately from the Akyarlar area of Turkey’s Bodrum peninsula. Images posted on Twitter on Wednesday included one showing the body of a toddler washed up on the shores of a beach in Bodrum, lying face down in the sand. The confirmed dead included five children and one woman. Seven people were rescued and two reached the shore in lifejackets. The official said hopes were fading of saving the two people still missing. Tens of thousands of Syrians fleeing the war in their homeland have descended on Turkey’s Aegean coast this summer to board boats to Greece, their gateway to the European Union.

“The humanitarian catastrophe is manmade. The answer is only through are man-made policies,” Hamdi Shaqqura, the deputy director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, told Al Jazeera. Shaqqura said that donations from the international community have been “very useful”, but need to be coupled with “real political policies” to effectively help Gaza. “The answer to Gaza is not dumping money into it. We have great potentials in Gaza for economic policies. What hinder economic development is merely Israeli policies, the closure (blockade) and other restrictions imposed on Gaza.” Gaza remains unders siege a decade after Israel’s withdrawal
A year after the war on Gaza, less than 2 percent of the required materials have been allowed into Gaza. The report comes as Egyptian military bulldozers press ahead with a project that effectively would fill Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip with water and flood the last remaining cross-border underground smuggling tunnels, which have brought both commercial items and weapons into Gaza. The report calls the economic prospects for 2015 for the Palestinian territories “bleak” because of the unstable political situation, reduced aid and the slow pace of reconstruction. Chris Alexander defends Canada’s refugee response, blames media
Amid what has been called the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War, the immigration minister says Canada has taken in “approximately 2,500” Syrian refugees to date. “The numbers grow quickly through private sponsorship and government assistance. We also have brought over 20,000 Iraqi refugees,” Chris Alexander said. Refugee crisis: Canada must do more, Harper’s policies have failed, rivals say Refugees protest in Hungary as EU argues over solution The plight of Syrian refugees was brought into the spotlight today after a picture of a drowned child circulated on social media. The boy was found lying face down on a Turkish beach. It is believed he was three years old. Turkish media are reporting his mother and older brother also died trying to reach Europe. More than four million refugees have fled Syria since the crisis began in 2011. There are also more than seven million internally displaced people within Syria. Ontario NDP candidate Paul Dewar told CBC’s Power & Politics host Rosemary Barton that the Conservative government’s policies have been a catastrophe. “They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to actually admit 1,300 refugees,” he said. “They couldn’t tell us for a
full year … how many refugees had come. At the same time Germany, Sweden, other countries were taking in tens of thousands.” Former Liberal cabinet minister John McCallum called the Conservative response to the Syrian refugee crisis a “total disgrace,” and made the comparison with Progressive Conservative leaders Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney who McCallum said were part of a tradition of Canadian generosity to refugees. Last month the Conservatives pledged to bring in an additional 10,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq if re-elected. Syrian refugee advocate Alexandra Kotyk, who launched Lifeline Syria this summer, says Canada isn’t doing enough. “Canada has before, and can again, do more,” she said. Lifeline Syria is a project that aims to bring 1,000 Syrian refugees to the Greater Toronto Area over the next two years. Minister accuses media of ignoring crisis Alexander, who has served as immigration minister since July 2013 and is running for re-election in Ontario, accused CBC News of ignoring the Syrian refugee crisis. “I’m actually interested in why this is the first Power & Politics panel we’ve had on this,” he said. Alexander went on to say that “the biggest conflict and humanitarian crisis of our time has been there for two years, and you and others have not put it in the headlines where it deserves to be.” Barton noted later the subject had been discussed at least 32 times on Power & Politics, including in interviews with Alexander. As a minister, Alexander was not allowed to appear on panels. Watch Chris Alexander debate Paul Dewar and John McCallum in the player above. Source: CBC News

POLITICS From the pen of the Founding Editor of ‘The Miracle’!!!
Surrey - Newton riding Why Harpreet? 3rd Election Article Nusrat Hussain nh.guidingstar@gmail.com According to Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey, there were over a million Muslims in Canada or about 3.2% of the population, making them the second largest religion after Christianity. It does sound odd, but the fact remains that despite the strength in number of votes, and the presence of enough capable people, the Muslim presence is almost non-existent on the active and the useful political stage of Canada. One can state many reasons for their nonexistence, but we can’t blame anyone other than our own selves. Period. The highest of knowledge, said Socrates, is to differentiate between right and wrong.’ The maestro Greek philosopher, who lived around 400 B.C, is considered the main source for the development of the Western philosophical thoughts. There is always a right and a wrong path challenging the person under those conditions. Complexity to choose amongst the right and wrong is further increased when matters of immediate rewards or punishments become more attractive than the lasting and eternal results. Imam Ghizali, the Muslim philosopher of the eleventh century thought, ‘the lowest of the knowledge is to know that the life hereafter is more important than the life here.’ It
wouldn’t be possible to deny the Imam if the truth about life hereafter is established. Regardless of the hereafter, one would agree that an immediate and a short living victory cannot be preferred over a long lasting victory. It continues to be a popular belief amongst the Muslims of Canada that the policies of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Liberal party are favorable to the Muslim issues internationally, as well as, to the our set of values within Canada. It is also a common observation that the Conservative party does not favor the Muslim issues- if the observation is agreed in totality then an open, bold and a thoughtful approach is required to address the situation.
servatives. The riding of SurreyNewton, because of its close contest, will be watched with great interest throughout Canada. If all the Muslim voters here clearly and openly declare their support for Mr. Harpreet Singh of Conservative party then his victory would be certain because of the numbers of
According to the above observation the NDP and the Liberal parties are already in favor of our community, therefore it is required to focus for favorable policies from the Con-
the Muslim voters. It would send a strong message at the highest command level of all the political parties. Mr. Singh, as known to me, is capable of presenting a fair and rea-
sonable viewpoint against all the odds. Higher ups of the NDP and the Liberal party wouldn’t carry bad sentiment out of the defeat in one riding. On the contrary, they would be more concerned about their voters and Conservative party would be compelled to revisit their policies. We need to leave a politically friendly Canada for the sake of our coming generations. Our timely and bold actions of today would dictate their future. AFA-LA-TA-TAFAKKAROON ‘WHY DO YOU NOT THINK’ Views expressed in the above article are personal of the founding Editor. They do not necessarily reflect the official policy of the Miracle. Note: (This is intended to be a series of articles until the Election Day. I would humbly request my readers to comment in the form of letters to the editor or in a personal email to myself and I would try to address them in my next writing. A healthy debate on the subject should help in improving the understanding before casting our precious vote.)

7 lessons I learned from buying nothing new for 200 days By: ASSYA BARRETTE A few months ago, I went through the worst experience of my life: my father passed away. It was a cancer which took him, and a small part of myself as well. As I reflect on the time preceding his death, there were so many hard parts. One of the hardest was not being able to mourn in peace. In our society, you can’t just mourn a person’s loss – you need to work. And not just at your job, but on piles of paperwork, people to notify and arrangements to be made. Finally, when I thought all of the work was over, I had to empty out my father’s apartment. Little did I know that this would be the bitterest labour yet. Going through my father’s old things, I felt the loss of my father with each and every item I sorted. And there was a lot of sorting to do. It took weeks to clear out the lifetime of possessions in my single father’s small apartment. Weeks to sell, donate, recycle or throw out the boxes and boxes of kitchenware, clothing, furniture, office materials, and so much more. I threw away a normal life of accumulation, the life that most of us live. Time, money, and effort had been heavily invested in getting all of this stuff, only to be disposed of with great difficulty. We were destroying the planet for future generations, all so that we could enjoy a short lifetime full of material possessions that in many cases were hardly used, rarely necessary and easily forgotten. I decided that I didn’t want this to be my “normal”. And so, I embarked on an experiment lasting 200 days where I would buy nothing new. Like many of us making a steady income, I’d never been very disciplined when it came to my purchases. If I could afford it – and even when I couldn’t – I often just thought, “why not?”
Could I survive 200 days away from the mall? I did. Excluding groceries, medicine, a pair of rock climbing shoes and basic toiletries, I borrowed and bought secondhand, or simply went without. Here is what I learned through this experience: 1. There is already too much stuff in the world As I toured various thrift stores, online classifieds sections, Facebook buy/sell groups and the like, I realised more than ever before, the sheer volume of stuff we humans have already created. Mountains of clothes, tons of furniture, dishes, pans, walking sticks – an ocean of all things imaginable. As all of this stuff is be-
ing thrown away, more is being churned out. We don’t need more. 2. People buy things out of pure compulsion Once I had decided to fulfill my needs through pre-owned sources, I was blown away by the amount of new items in thrift stores – items that were unused, complete with price tags and original packaging.Everything from new scented candles to new clothing graced the
Casablanca Restaurant Fine Dine Pakistani & Moroccan Cuisine
aisles of secondhand stores. Clearly, the act of buying is often completely disassociated with actual human need, or even want. It’s much more akin to a compulsion. 3. There is an unreasonable stigma against pre-owned items As I blogged about my experience, I received a lot of interesting feedback on the hygienic aspect of my efforts. Many felt that buying clothing, furniture and other goods used instead of new was dirty and uncivilised. These same people would happily donate their used goods to thrift stores. I guess it’s good enough for the poorer ones among us – but not for “us.” 4. There is so much abundance During my 200 days, I learned that I didn’t need to go to big b box stores to buy what I needed – there were plenty of resources in my own community. Our communities have an abundance of stuff and plenty of people willing to give it away at a very low price or for free. 5. When nothing is new, nothing is expensive My bank account definitely got a break during these 200 days. Second hand comes at a delightfully steep discount. And I never felt that I compromised on quality, either. 6. It’s awesome paying a person instead of a corporation
Especially when, shopping through classifieds, I found that most sellers were honest and helpful. They were normal people just wanting to recoup a portion of their purchase price by selling perfectly usable items. It was refreshing to know that my money would be going directly to someone just like me, instead of a faceless corporation. 7. I don’t really need most of that stuff Truth is, some things you simply cannot find preowned. Lots of items, even common ones, are either impossible or impractical to find pre-owned. When I was forced to not buy them – against my strongest impulses at times – I was surprised how nothing changed. Not my health, happiness or inner harmony. I realised that most things are really just “niceto-haves;” real needs are generally more limited. My 200 days was not only an optional experience in sustainable living and minimalism; it was a necessary and transformative journey. When someone dies, you’re expected to just “get past it” and go back to normal. I did not want to feel like losing my father was an event I simply moved on from, an experience that ultimately left me unchanged. Instead, I allowed the experience to change me deeply. In fact, I don’t think I’ll ever “get past it,” because every day, my father’s passing inspires the way I speak, the way I act and the way I perceive my life. I hope that you might allow this post to change you a bit as well. Maybe you’ll pay a visit to a thrift store for your next clothing purchase, or embark on your own 10, 30, or even 200 day challenge. At the very least, I hope you’ll just change the way you think when you buy something new. Source: Dawn.com

It is not only our duty towards our family but towards other people of different nature too. It is a pity we are eager to take favours, things for granted and whatever we desire or pleases us but we are not that eager to give. Whenever the balance is disturbed, relationships and lives are disturbed. We, as a parent, as a son or daughter, or as a youth with others are confused, hurt and unhappy. Sometimes thinsg go out of control and one does not know how to make it right. Time, people, and situation change. It is not possible to go back but to move forward also becomes difficult. We are so busy in everyday life, daily struggles that we ignore the signs and problems for the time being, we think we will deal with it some other time. The problems of this generation gap, between parents and youth are like icebergs; some icebergs have bigger issues than others. All said and done but biggest question for each is that if we have done our part and duties and to go the extra mile. In any relationship one has to always give more, adjust more, we all know this and many more. It is easier said than done.
If you are ask any director or CEO of a company to take the job of a lesser designation will he or she take it? No. So we parents have to shoulder more responsibilities and skills in dealing with youth. As CEO’s of our family we have to see our company’s (family) progression, maintain stability and standard. Of course, in this job we cannot fire our fellow associates (children). Parents and youth both are individuals with their indentities. Parents have advantage of starting life first, more experience, more exposure to past and present. On the other hand, youth have biggest advantage of vast resources available to them in the form of help from hteir parents. They can start their work, their life with blessings and guidance of parents. The need is to understand and respect each other and be ready to give more than take. Parents have more to do than youth. Higher the position, more intense the responsibility.

YOUTH/WOMEN
Tips for Muslim Mothers
By Amna Farooq Being a mother is one of the greatest experiences of life of a woman. But this great experience is filled with responsibilities long with a joy of getting a great status of “MOTHER”. Often mothers get tensed and exhausted of the duties and burdens pinned with the tag of mother. There are a lot of matters to care about, health and food, education and brought up. But the most important factor for a mother to worry about is how to bring up children in a well manner. As a mother holds a whole grooming institution in herself, she is responsible for a human child’s role in society which he/she is eventually going to play. Here are a few tips for mother, which may help them to groom their children in a constructive way on Islamic guidelines: Parenting is a 24 hrs. a day-7 days a week job: Your children are a gift from ALLAH. And ALLAH subhan hu wa tala expects you to be efficient enough to worth that gift. HE wants you to make your children a perfect muslim and a constructive part of your society. So feel that responsibility on your shoulders, but don’t panic, although the responsibility is tough but ALLAH is with you. Prepare yourself mentally to be on duty 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Motivate yourself for all the upcoming challenges in bringing up your child. Read Quran in front of children: If you want your child to be a good and practicing muslim, be a practicing muslim in his/her front. Quran recitation is crucial for a muslim to understand deen. If you make a constant habit of reciting Quran , and your child observes it, there is no chance he/she wouldn’t show interest in what you are reading. But be mindful , habits are developed at early ages, so even your toddler don’t gets what you are reciting, but it’s getting imprinted in his memory, for afterwards implementation. Offer salah on time ,in front of children: If you offer salah at the very last time, how do you expect your child to be eager for salah? try to offer prayer as soon as adaan calls. And try to compel your partner also, to offer prayer in mosque with procession. In this way, when your baby will see his father heading for mosque 5 times a day, he will also join his father to go to mosque. Similarly your daughter will follow you too. Don’t be too much strict or harsh: Limitations are good, but too much strictness can lead your teen out of hand. Especially teens, as this is their growing age and they have developed their own way of thinking too, so it wouldn’t be a good idea to impose your choices and rules on children. Do ask their opinion too. Too much strictness or harshness can raise rebellious attitude too. Try to calm yourself in case of disobedience: Children are immature, that’s why they are called children. So don’t expect e very descent and mature behavior from them. Things may go wrong at times but you can sort them out and correct them with patience. You may expect your child to obey your command but he/she may disobey. Now here you have to prove yourself a very kind and nice mother, have a sitting with them and tell them pros and cons of their bad action. Be patient, and keep yourself
calm under such situations. Try to be a friend, rather than a mother: Try to establish a relation of trust and friend ship. Develop frankness with your children. Often children hide their matters from parents out of fear. Your frank behavior would encourage them to discuss every confusion or ideas they have in their mind, prior to acting upon them. Especially children spend a lot of time with mother, so a kind and friendly behavior of a mother can help them speak out their hearts. Treat all your children equally: Often people are in habit of treating children unequally. Especially when it comes to gender, boys are often prioritized over girls. They are provided with more resources as compared to girls. Or sometimes intelligent or attractive child receives more attention. This biased attitude can develop a lot of inferior complexes and other issues in your child. Islam prefers equality. Although men are given more authorities in some cases but it is written nowhere to treat children unequally. In fact our beloved prophet Mohammad (s.a.w) loved his daughter too much. Allow room for mistakes: No one is perfect. Mistakes are part of life. If your child commits a mistake, treat him/her in a nice manner to make him realize his mistake. Give him some time to think over. Practice in front of your children regularly what you want them to do: Be a practicing Muslim. You can never expect your child to speak truth while you lie in front of him. How can your child speak in a polite tone while you shout at him? children are very fast at taking up habits, so be very much careful in front of your children, as they are much likely to do exactly what you do.do repeated acts to develop it in them as a habit, eg doing zikar, reciting durood. Say BIS MI ALLAH repeatedly whenever you start any task. IN SHA ALLAH, ALHUMDULILLAH, JAZAKALLAH, make such words your habit, so that your child copies them too. Have a friendly meeting with them on regular basis: Give your children time. Have a chat with them on regular basis. Tell them, teach them in a good and effective way. You can hold up a little meeting every day or when suitable, and decide a topic to be discussed eg. “lets discuss about salaah today” or “ today your dad told me about an incident in office” etc. Demonstrate your love for them: Just loving is not enough but expression of love matters a lot. Indeed love of a mother for child is eternal and needs no certificate, but this expression is important for your child. How may he/she know you love her/him ? a Muslim mother must not be ignorant of the fact that her children need her warm lap, assistance and affection. This would give them confidence and sense of security. Discuss their daily routine: Show interest in what they did whole the day, what happened in school, who their competition went, what they did at their friend’s home etc. you would notice you will find many points in between where you would suggest or correct your child. If your child is not in habit of discussing anything with you, may be had some fight with his friend or he went through a trouble and you don’t even know. May be he is intending to something wrong and you are not knowledgeable about it. Don’t fulfill their every desire: Don’t full fill each demand they make, irrespective of the demand being fair or unfair. Make dua for children after every salah: ALLAH subahana hu wa tala has destiny over fate of all. So with practical effort , dua is also a necessary tool for a muslim mother. As the du’a of the mother for her child is answered as occurs in the hadîth: “There are three supplications that are answered – there being no doubt about it: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler and the supplication of the parent for his child.”
To have and to hold
By: NAGINA IMTIAZ While wallets or just pant or shirt pockets may do for gentlemen you would hardly see a lady going out without her bag or purse in which, besides the cash and credit cards she keeps other items of necessity. Let’s see, there are the tissues, hand sanitizer, perfume or deodorant, compact mirror, lipstick, lip gloss or lip balm, band aid, hair items such as hair bands, clips or pins, safety pins, a sewing kit (maybe), chewing gum or peppermints, aspirin, a pen and a small diary or notebook and, of course - last but never least - a cell phone. In fact when those wallet-carrying gentleman need something like a tissue or maybe need some aspirin, they ask the well-organised, resourceful lady next to them if they could help them out. Mind you, the stuff mentioned above doesn’t always make the contents of every lady’s handbag. She could have a bit of this or a bit of that. Also, a mother’s handbag will contain different things from a single girl’s handbag. Having said so much about handbag contents, let’s now look at the kind of handbags out there.
Handheld Earlier, most purses used to be handheld with a couple of handles, one for either side to be held together and plenty of zipped pockets inside for organising your stuff. Considered fashionable and sturdy, too, ladies liked owning a black one and maybe another brown or white one to go with their entire wardrobe. But then they got tired of the sweaty palms and fingers constantly folded around the handles. And so over a period of time the handhelds started getting discarded in favour of other varieties, which allowed the hands to remain free. Still major designers like Louis Vuitton and Gucci are bringing them back. They are better known as speedy bags. And the bigger the better.
The bags, which look like decorated sacks with two small straps which you can also carry on the arm or shoulder are known as tote bags. Usually they are left open with no zip but just a clasp or button and look like grocery or shopping bags, which may not be too safe for carrying cash or other valuables, especially in crowded public places but fashion and style is fashion and style, right? A variation of the tote bag is the bucket bag. Only they are closed with a draw string. Not only are they convenient, they also have capacity to carry loads of stuff including your lunch. Cross body bags and pouches Such bags usually have long straps and may also be carried over one shoulder. But since it is difficult to keep them from slipping off the shoulder again and again they can be worn more conveniently across the body. Pouches with long straps, too, can be worn this way.
Backpack
They come in all sizes. The bigger ones are also a sports accessory and thus manufactured by many sports companies with airy material. But they also come in denim, leather, etc. You may not just use them for the usual stuff that you put in a purse, if big enough you may also hold another set of clothes, a jacket maybe Clutch These don’t have any handles but are hand- another pair of footwear or put your laptop or held. You are to, well, clutch them preferably tablet in your backpack for which some have from below. They are more of evening bags to special padded extra sleeves. accessorise evening wear and look like embel- Coin purse lished envelopes. They also don’t have much It’s so difficult keeping track of stray coins in room inside. You can just keep a few tissues or your big bags. Most of the time you are left hanky and maybe a lipstick and compact mir- fishing for these and somehow you can nevror with your money and cell phone in them. er locate a single coin inside your bag when Overloading them will make them bulge and you need it. So it is sensible to keep the loose change in a small purse which you can easily lose their slim shape. locate inside a bigger bag. Tote and bucket bags
Setting Boundaries
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor We need to be able to tell others when they are acting in ways that are not acceptable to us. A first step is starting to know that we have a right to protect and defend ourselves. That we have not only the right, but the duty, to take responsibility for how we allow others to treat us. The purpose of having boundaries is to protect and take care of ourselves We need to start becoming aware of what healthy behavior and acceptable interaction dynamics look like before we can start practicing them ourselves - and demanding the proper treatment from others. We need to start learning how to be emotionally honest with ourselves, how to start owing our feelings, and how to communicate in a direct and honest manner. Setting personal boundaries is vital part of healthy relationships - which are not possible without communication. The first thing that we need to learn to do is communicate without blaming. That means, stop saying things like: you make me so angry; you hurt me; you make me crazy; how could you do that to me after all I have done for you; etc. These are the very types of messages we got in childhood that has so warped our perspective on our own emotional process. I thought I was supposed to be perfect, and that if I wasn’t, I was causing the people I loved great pain. I grew up believing that something was wrong with me because I was human. I grew up believing that I had power over other people’s feelings - and they had power over mine.
As an adult, I unconsciously tried to manipulate people - by trying to be what they wanted me to be if I wanted them to like me, or trying to be either intimidating or invisible if that seemed the safest course. I had no real concept of being responsible for my own feelings because I had learned that other people were responsible for my feelings - and vice versa. I had to learn to start defining myself emotionally as separate from other people in order to start learning for who I was. I was not able to start seeing myself as separate in a healthy way (I had always felt that I was separate in an unhealthy way shameful and unworthy) until I started to see that I had been powerless over the behavior patterns I learned in childhood. Since my behavior patterns, my behavioral and emotional defense systems, had developed in reaction to the feeling that there was something wrong with me, I had to learn to start taking power away from the toxic shame that is at the core of this disease. I have to learn to have pride in for who I am. This is not to please others but because I choose to be that way………… shabnam@skcounselling.ca

‘Eating fat makes you fat’ idea debunked: dietitian
The science surrounding a low-fat diet has changed but our attitudes haven’t kept up, a dietitian says. The idea that saturated fats were associated with high cholesterol and heart disease was sparked by the Seven Countries Study of middle-aged men in Greece, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Japan, Finland and the U.S. Based on the findings of the 1950s study, Minnesota physician Ancel Keys warned about the risks of fatty foods. The idiom “eating more fat makes you fat” was engrained in the 1970s but it hasn’t survived the test of time, says Russell de Souza, a registered dietitian and professor of nutritional epidemiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. Food-Regional Potato Chips It might be best to opt for a small amount of regular chips instead of a larger amount of a low-fat variety. (Matthew Mead/Associated Press). “Fat is not the enemy,” de Souza said. “What’s more important than the amount of fat we consume is the type of fat we consume.” Now the advice includes: •Avoid harmful artificial trans fats, used to hydrogenate vegetable oils into a solid such as those used in shortening, because they raise the risk of heart disease, increase bad cholesterol levels and reduce good cholesterol levels.
•Choose heart-healthy fats such as monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats from nuts, fish and plant-based vegetable oils. •Don’t increase saturated fats found in meat, eggs and dairy above about 10 per cent. •Focus on the whole diet, not specific nutrients. •Healthy fat replacements “When the food industry got fat out of the food supply, often times what it was replaced with was refined carbohydrates like refined flours and sugars,” de Souza said. “We think that from a heart disease perspective, that’s really been shown to be a wash. If you take animal fats or total fats out, and you replace it with an ingredient that’s just as bad, it’s kind of like we went out of the frying pan but into the fire.” Cutting fat from the diet doesn’t always lead to wiser choices, de Souza said. As one example, he compared the labels on low-fat baked potato chips with regular potato chips. The low-fat chips are lower in fat, but also higher in carbohydrates and sugar. “Sometimes we tend to eat more of lowfat foods thinking that they’re guilt free and we end up eating more calories than we wanted from the low-fat foods because they’re also not as satisfying and not as satiating,” he said. De Souza suggests eating a small amount of regular chips instead of a larger amount of a low-fat variety. He also gave the example of comparing labels on low-fat salad dressing vs. regular. The first ingredients on the low-fat version are water, vinegar, salt and sugar, while water and soybean and canola oil top the list in the regular dressing. “What we’ve done is we’ve taken the healthy fats out and we’ve replaced it
with sugar and salt to add flavour,” he said. And the advice to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables still stands. 7 diet studies reveal not all fats created equal Eating fat facts Here are some of the main studies that started the high-fat hypothesis and then called it into question. A subscription is required to access the research in some cases. •Ancel Keys launched his landmark Seven Countries Study in 1958. It showed correlations between dietary fat and heart disease. •Large, cohort studies at Harvard in women in 1997 and men in 1996 looked at diets and suggested total fat was not associated with heart disease — but all fats were not created equal. It was suggested that saturated fat was probably harmful and polyunsaturated fat from vegetable oil or fish oil were likely protective. •In 1997, the DASH trial of a higher carbohydrate, low-saturated fat dietary pattern suggested benefits on blood pressure. •The OMNI Heart trial published in 2005 showed that a low carb, higher monounsaturated fat version of the DASH diet from eating olive oil and nuts for example might be even better. •The 2013 PREDIMED study in Spain showed that a Mediterranean diet rich in monounsaturated fat reduced cardiovascular disease risk by 30 per cent after about five years of followup compared with a control diet that advised reduced dietary fat. •Jakobsen’s cohort study on replacing saturated fat with “high” glycemic index carbohydrates raised the risk of heart disease by 33 per cent. 24 SPORTS PCB ‘can survive’ without playing India - Shaharyar Khan Dhul Qa’dah 20, 1436 September 4, 2015
PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan has said Pakistan ‘can survive’ without playing cricket against India but hoped the BCCI would adhere to the MOU between the boards and improve the prospects of bilateral series in the future. “Given the present circumstance, the chances of a Pakistan-India series look bleak and we have to live with the fact that India are not going to play us,” Shaharyar told ESPNcricinfo. “At the same time the BCCI hasn’t formally refused us, but we can’t wait long amid this uncertainty and have got to have an alternative plan. We will wait for another couple of months before forcing our plan B. The BCCI had signed an MOU to play Pakistan in six series between 2015 and 2023, with the first to be hosted by the PCB in the UAE in December. As it has often done in the past - India and Pakistan did not play for 17 years because of the wars in 1965 and 71 - the strained po-
litical relationship between the countries put the series in doubt. The last full series was in 2007, when Pakistan toured India. Bilateral ties between the two countries were snapped after the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008 until a limited-overs series was played in 2012-13, though India and Pakistan have faced each other in international tournaments. India’s refusal to play Pakistan in recent years has cost the PCB over $80 million in terms of broadcasting and other commercial deals. Another divisive issue in the PCB is that there are two people seen to be running the board - Shaharyar and Najam Sethi. The executive committee is led by Sethi and includes the board’s chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed and chief financial officer Badar Khan. It was formed in line with new ICC guidelines, and though its role was not defined in the PCB’s constitution, the committee is understood to be holding the majority
of power in the board. Two power centers in the PCB, and friction between new and old officials, are major concerns. The proposed Pakistan Super League has exacerbated the issue because it has a different team of employees. Sethi was removed as the PCB’s interim chairman by the courts - he had to give an undertaking that he would not contest elections for chairman, only then did the legal feud with Zaka Ashraf end - but later the country’s Prime Minister installed him as a direct nominee in the governing board. He then became the head of the three-man executive committee. Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure has been a major talking point because of its inconsistent format over the years. The change this year is the third in the last four years, but according to Shaharyar the latest change is best for the long term. Though Shaharyar was optimistic about the latest format he feared the board
may alter it in the future. “We have discussed with every stakeholder of the game and almost every one decided in favour of 16-team format. This format is locked down for next three years until this present governing board is in house. I don’t know what is going to be done after me but I can assure that we have finally found a format, which I think is the right formula.” It’s been five years since the spot-fixing controversy during the 2010 tour of England - Salman Butt, Mohammd Asif and Mohammad Amir were only recently allowed to return to competitive cricket by the ICC - but Shaharyar said corruption was still a danger to Pakistan cricket. “It’s not entirely eradicated but we are very vigilant about it. We have maintained zero tolerance towards the corruption and we will not afford to have another such incident again.” Source: Cricinfo
ethnic sport for girls in schools,” as he questioned why the U.S. was investigating. FIFA was forced to issue a statement distancing itself from Carrard, a former director general of the International Olympic Committee. Sources close to FIFA told Reuters that there were also some calls from within the organization for him to be replaced as head of the committee. Carrard could not be reached for comment. FIFA was not immediately available for comment. The committee’s makeup also makes it less likely that it will be in any way transforming. The six regional soccer confederations, which currently control FIFA’s troubled executive committee, also dominate the reform committee – appointing all of its 12 members, although some have chosen people from outside of the game. Most of the soccer officials indicted had been officials in the confederations for North and South America. “It’s hard to take seriously a reform com-
mittee of FIFA that is full of football and Olympic insiders and officials, all of whom have an implicit conflict of interest through their roles as well as a vested interest in maintaining as much of the status quo as they can get away with,” said Jaimie Fuller, a founder of the campaign group #NewFIFANow, which is seeking radical reform. An attempt to get FIFA’s sponsors – such as Coca Cola Co, Visa Inc and McDonald’s Corp. – to appoint two representatives to the committee failed. The sponsors decided they didn’t want to be part of a body so dominated by the confederations, according to a source familiar with the situation. Coca-Cola, Visa and McDonald’s all declined to discuss the latest developments in the FIFA reform process when contacted by Reuters. Earlier in the summer, the sponsors were very public in their calls for significant reforms of FIFA, but since then they have been less outspoken. They haven’t, for example, backed up their calls with threats that they might pull out of sponsorship deals or not renew them, one source with knowl-
edge of the situation said. Many of those inside or close to FIFA are also suffering from reform plan fatigue. There have been many reform initiatives in the past and most have led to little real change. Indeed, FIFA already had a reform process in place when the committee was appointed. That process is led by Domenico Scala, independent head of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee. In July, Scala presented a nine-point reform plan to the executive committee which included replacing that powerful ruling body with two separate committees – weakening the power of the confederations. The committee responded by setting up the new reform committee. Scala, a Swiss businessman, is not a member of Carrard’s body and his ability to influence its decisions remains in question, even though he is supposed to oversee it. Adding to the multiple layers of decision making, Carrard has said he will appoint a five person “advisory board” to help him with his reform plans. “The whole thing is ridiculous,” says Michael Hershman, a member of a previous attempt to reform FIFA – the Independent Governance Committee. ............ FIFA starts new reform process but critics don’t expect major changes
Struggling with a major corruption crisis, FIFA convenes the first meeting of a new reform committee on Wednesday. But few with knowledge of the matter – either inside or outside world soccer’s governing body – expect it to come up with the robust proposals for structural change that are being sought by prosecutors and sponsors. FIFA is facing unprecedented pressure to reform following the May indictment by U.S. authorities of nine current and former soccer officials on briberyrelated charges. Many of them had served on FIFA’s executive committee or in other FIFA positions. But the committee’s chairman Francois Carrard lost credibility with those seeking more radical change when he told the Swiss newspaper Le Matin Dimanche that criticism of FIFA president Sepp Blatter was “unfair” and that the corruption cases involve “only a few rogues.” He also came under fire for claiming that soccer in the U.S. is “just an
