Only Motivated Voters May End the Evil Genius It’s believed that the declining voter turnout actually helps the interested candidates regardless of their past standing. This is why Steven Harper, among other things, has been enjoying his political longevity; he also enjoys being addicted to hit his rivals with attack ads. The negative ads and the related technologies have adversely affected the independence of electoral process in the past polls. He succeeded in keeping the moderate, alienated and apathetic voters out of polling stations. Unfortunately, political wrangling is not free from the polluting gimmicks that are responsible for the resulted questionable democracy at the end. Shockingly, the political marketers usually take undue advantage by employing hardcore propaganda in order to keep potential voters away from the polls. However, there is always a tipping point where things start turning around for the better. Let’s be optimistic to witness a huge turnout of voters on Oct.19. It seems as if most of those who voted for Harper have now realized his true colors, so they might be going for electing anyone but PC candidates. This time around, there are groups working hard to persuade people from amongst the members of first nations, labour unions, vets, students, and the marginal communities of ethnic background to go for voting. Nevertheless, political awakening of those who are not well versed in politics is a ‘must,’ because the politically unaware people don’t realize that by not voting they are contributing to the sad demise of Canadian democracy.

Thus, voting and creating local groups to build some trust among one another is very important to solve problems. Manipulation of the naive population: Another misleading factor is when TV channels/stations show brief clips of the candidates looking full of energy, running here and there while smiling for the camera; the super acting is part of the play to impress people regardless of real merit. Another factor is the political parties are mostly backed by the vested interests where general welfare of the people is ignored. No matter what, the sold out biased media is doing its worst to damage the other party as much as possible. This is how, a large majority among the naive members of the community easily falls prey to the power hungry candidates. Also, the research findings illustrate that it is possible to influence a person’s attitudes toward a political candidate using “survey questions,” which in turn may influence his or her voting behavior. Despite the traps, an intelligent voter always sense what’s really cooking. Tendency to elect idiots and the abusers is very dangerous indeed. Older folks: The past experience shows the politicians rarely promise new universities, free tuition, statesubsidized daycare, or other youthcentric goodies, because younger voters don’t care. On the other hand, the older people participate in the electoral process seriously, which is why, politicians talk about balanced budgets and seniors’ benefits. In 2011, almost 80 per cent of the retirees below age 75 voted. That means the aging baby boomers and

seniors swamp younger demographics in this country. Another important element is that the Canadian Muslims comprise of the largest non-Christian religious denomination in the country. There are more than 1 million Muslims in Canada according to the last census. They make up almost 8 per cent of the population of the Greater Toronto Area, and at least nine suburban ridings could be vulnerable to a concerted voting effort. “When someone says ‘I don’t think my vote makes a difference’ we can sit down with these statistics and say: ‘Look, you live in this key riding. You could have made a difference if more of you came out to vote.” Muslim turnout is about half that of comparable religious groups, said Sheikh, who thinks they feel politically disengaged after ‘‘a tough decade’’ and what he called “a lot of hate’’ against the community. (Muneeza Sheikh, director of communication with Canadian Muslim Vote, a non-partisan advocacy group). The ‘stay home’ potential voters need to be smarter and go to the polls to exercise their constitutional right of selecting their independent choice based on their own judgment. They shouldn’t wait for the judicial system to keep people in check to do the right thing or the media to be impartial. Meaning the voting public have to do their own check and balances and avoid voting based on what they hear from the media and the attack ads. The eligible voters must come out to vote the right candidate based on the party platforms (from head to toe) to

ascertain quality of candidates and the program of their respective parties Governments have been failing to deliver and they are accused of having neglected the general welfare of the future generation by piling up indebtedness. Short term gains followed by long term pain are certainly unacceptable. If democracy is to remain our preferred system, it’s up to the people to educate themselves for voting only for ethical politicians and parties. The best thing is to evaluate the candidates through asking questions. Most definitely, the parties that will make decisions and bring legislation allowing for the long-term general welfare including financial health of the populace, are the most fit to govern. The workings of the municipal, provincial and federal Governments must be dissected and taught with clarity. It must be brought to every student’s attention that Government continually affects every day of their lives and well-being. There is a need of a level playing field to offer freedom to all candidates to tilt the field in his favor, yet the voters should not be made addicted based on false offers to win them at the polls. Surely, the truly educated people will have a Government that delivers the best. P. M. of ‘future promises’! Surprisingly this time for most it’s a dilemma choosing the P.M. Some are mesmerized by the sweet speeches of P. M. of ‘future promises’: “I will do this and that”, but such is not reliable, which is over promised and under delivered. Some believe the P.M. had more than enough years to change and deliver what is promised now. So it is rather dodgy to trust his promises. Some are falling for Liberal young Trudeau and some for NDP Mulcair. So why not have 3 P.M.? We have as many gods as the thousands of religions working peacefully with each other, or rather do not interfere with each other as they can’t see, speak, or act. Whereas, the human P.M. can communicate, see, speak, act, fight and defend, yet such strategy of 3 P.M. cannot work just as having more than one Creator-GOD doesn’t work that is apparent by the most sorrowful world situation that is in a shamble, jeopardizes the

safety of mankind. The best policy is to have a ‘Change’ and bring the new face with the best of the following qualifications to lead the communities. ‘Experience, maturity, honesty, respect of other Divine religious practices, non-hateful of other religious domains, in anger do not take hasty decision of wars, dropping bombs and killing, who doesn’t get influenced by the others to take the wrong step of revenge, knows how to say ‘No’ to the aggressive allies, uses his own ethics and moral values, and believes in diplomatic ways to deal with the enemies, and not just take the drastic action of ‘Get the enemies’, but use the peaceful ways of our Prophets Muhammad SAWS, and Messiah Jesus (AS), keep the Scriptural law in mind. With such qualities all problems would sort out miraculously by itself. Well at the moment the only new face reflects the above qualities is for NDP Thomas Mulcair. Let’s have a change.

Who to Vote for on October 19th? A message from Muslim organizations and Arab organizations By: Shawkat Hasan In light of the upcoming elections, a group of Canadian National and local Muslim and Arab organizations in addition to prominent individuals from both communities sent a letter to all

federal party leaders expressing their aspirations and concerns. Below* is what was sent to each party leader: the Conservatives, NDP, Liberals, Green and Bloc Quebecois and a link** to the responses received. Based on the responses (if received**), on the track record of each party over the past few years, on the statements made by party leaders and prominent candidates during this election campaign, and taking into account the realistic probability of the parties coming into power, we conclude the following:WWWWW Canadian Arabs and Muslims have a great responsibility to go out and VOTE in this election. So much is at stake not only for minorities but for the whole of Canada. => The NDP appears to be the party that will best serve Canada and the Canadian people and reverse the negative effects the Harper Conservatives have had over their nine years in power. They responded positively to all the points we raised and have been advocating on the same positions throughout their time as official opposition. => The Green Party has advocated many important causes and abides by high moral standards. It is a strong defender of human rights and minority rights and its influence on the political arena is important although it is not aiming to form the government or be a part of a ruling coalition. => The Bloc is a regional marginal party that has espoused xenophobic and anti Muslim positions in the past. Their chance to form the government or be a part of a ruling coalition is

practically non existent. => The Liberal Party did not respond to our letter, to date. They have taken positive positions supporting religious freedoms and Canadian citizens abroad yet they supported Bill C-51. Their positions are close to the Conservatives in many cases especially in foreign policies. => The Conservative Party hasnot responded to our letter nor even acknowledged it. Their policies over the years they spent in power had devastating effects on freedoms, liberties and tolerance in Canada. Their foreign policies negatively affected Canada’s position as a respected peace and human rights defending country. Record half a million refu- Obama urges world leaders gees reach Europe this year to hold course against ISIL A record number of refugees have crossed the Mediterranean into Europe this year, breaching the half million mark for the past nine months, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). As of Tuesday, the group said 522,124 people had travelled by sea to reach the continent. About 388,000 have entered via Greece, and more than 175,000 of the total came from Syria - the largest single refugee source as a country. IOM estimated that 2,892 people have died attempting the crossing. The majority of those deaths were among people seeking to reach Italy via North Africa. Despite the risks, thousands of refugees still continue to make the dangerous journey. On Tuesday, the Libyan coastguard said it rescued 346 refugees, including almost 100 women and children, who were crammed onto rubber boats and stranded off the country’s coast. Three boats were intercepted a few kilometres off Garabulli and Ghot el-Rommane, east of Tripoli, coastguard officer Mohamad Jannane, who took part in the operation, said. Jannane said the refugees, who had been trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, were shuttled in a three-hour operation to a naval base in Tripoli before being transferred to reception centres. “The rescue operation was carried out between 23:00 GMT on Monday and 02:00 GMT on Tuesday morning because our boats are small and they were overloaded,” the officer said. He said that 34 women and four children were among 230 refugees in two of the boats, while the third was carrying 116 people, including 54 women and two children. Libya has for years been a stepping-stone for refugees, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa but also

Syria and other Middle Eastern countries, seeking to travel to Europe. In an upsurge of attempted crossings this week, the Italian coastguard said it had coordinated the rescue on Monday of 1,151 refugees in 11 operations off the Libyan coast. Separately, the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, Doctors Without Borders) said its ship Dignity 1 had saved 373 people, including 62 women and 10 children. Those refugees were transferred to Italy. The influx has strained the 28-nation European Union and prompted a rash of border closures. This year’s influx has long since passed the previous record of some 219,000 people last year. Meanwhile, Austria warned that it may have to use force to ease any backlog of refugees if Germany decided to no longer let them enter via their shared border, but will continue to work closely with its neighbour to expedite the flow. Germany has re-imposed border controls and curbed rail traffic from Austria in an effort to slow an influx of refugees, thousands of whom reach its territory daily. By contrast, Austria is largely letting refugees stream onto its soil from Hungary unhindered and is shuttling them towards Germany. Asked by a reporter what would happen if Germany “seals the border”, Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner said: “Then there will be a massive backlog here in Austria and therefore here we quickly need a European answer.” Germany’s suspension of regular traffic on one major rail link with Austria has prompted many refugees to cross the frontier by other means. Hundreds have been lining up at a crossing near the Austrian city of Salzburg each day. Source: Al-Jazeera

Afghan forces come under heavy Taliban fire in Kunduz

US President Barack Obama has urged members of a US-led coalition to hold course in its fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) against a backdrop of growing Russian military deployments to bolster Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Obama said the US-led coalition had grown to 60 nations with the addition of new members Nigeria, Tunisia and Malaysia and had beaten back ISIL from a third of the terrain it once controlled in Iraq. “We’ve seen that ISIL can be defeated on the battlefield where there is sound organisation and a government and military that is coordinating with this coalition and with our diplomatic efforts,” Obama told leaders at a summit of an anti-ISIL coalition. “It will require diligence, focus and sustained effort by all of us.” ISIL fighters are being beaten in northeast Syria and have been repelled from almost all of the Turkey-Syrian border across which thousands of foreign fighters have travelled from overseas to swell its ranks, Obama said at UN headquarters. “Like terrorists and tyrants throughout history ISIL will eventually lose because it has nothing to offer but suffering and death,” Obama said. “Those who are labouring under their control, it is a stark and brutal life that does not appeal to people in the long term.” Obama did not talk about Russia’s growing military presence in Syria, but said that he was willing to work with Moscow, Tehran and others “to begin a transition process” that would involve a “new leader” to replace Assad. Obama and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, traded barbs and frosty glances on Monday amid deepening tensions over a Syrian conflict that has claimed some 250,000 lives and sent millions more fleeing from their homes. Both leaders agree on the need to defeat ISIL, but Putin says this should be achieved by backing Moscow’s long-standing ally in the region, Assad. Obama says the Syrian leader

has killed too many of his own people to be a legitimate leader. While they disagree on the key issue of Assad’s future, there have been signs of willingness to cooperate. They held a 90-minute meeting on the crises in Ukraine and Syria and, during a gourmet lunch with other leaders, shook hands and clinked their wine glasses. After the meeting, Putin said the talks were “business-like and very frank” and described an “opportunity to work on joint problems together” with the US. The two leaders agreed that their armed forces should hold talks to avoid coming into conflict in Syria. In recent weeks, Russia has deployed combat aircraft, tanks and other gear to Syria, while the US has acknowledged problems with its effort to roll back ISIL from strongholds in Iraq and Syria despite more than 7,000 air strikes since August 2014. A $500m Pentagon scheme to train and arm more than 5,000 moderate rebels to fight ISIL has been marred by recruitment issues, defections and delays. The year-long project has yielded only a handful of fighters so far. At Tuesday’s meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that UN data shows that radicals are currently travelling to join conflicts overseas from more than 100 countries – representing a 70-percent increase over recent years. “Violent extremist groups … pose a direct threat to international security, mercilessly target women and girls, and undermine universal values of peace, justice and human dignity,” he said. “Addressing this challenge goes to the heart of the mission of the United Nations.” On Tuesday, the US imposed sanctions on more than 30 ISIL leaders, financial figures, supporters and affiliated groups in an effort to block the group from world financial systems. They included citizens of Britain, France, Russia, Syria, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia. Source: Al-Jazeera

Afghanistan’s security forces are coming under heavy fire as they battle to retake the city of Kunduz from the Taliban. Tuesday’s counter-offensive was taking place as the Taliban was said to be closing in on the city’s airport after many of the security forces had fled. Earlier on Tuesday, Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani, in an address to the nation, said security forces had retaken some government buildings and that the Taliban had “sustained heavy casualties”. Afghanistan mobilised military reinforcements to take back Kunduz, a day after Taliban fighters overran the strategic northern city in their biggest victory since being toppled from power in 2001. The US, in support of the Afghan government, carried out an air strike on the outskirts of

Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province. In Washington, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook “strongly” condemned the Taliban attack and confirmed that “limited coalition forces” were on the ground in the Kunduz area involved in “training, advising and assisting the Afghan security forces in accordance with our resolute support mission.” He said the air strike by a US plane was carried out “in order to eliminate a threat to coalition and Afghan forces in the area”. The single bomb dropped was said to have destroyed a tank stolen by the Taliban. Many of the Afghan security forces retreated to the outlying airport, leaving the Taliban effectively in control of Kunduz after they stormed the city, capturing government buildings and freeing hundreds of prisoners. Scores of

unidentified bodies littered the streets after hours of heavy fighting on Monday, according to local residents, many of whom were making a hasty exit from Kunduz, some by road while others headed to the airport. Ayoub Salangi, the deputy interior minister, said security forces were ready to retake Kunduz and pledged to investigate how the Taliban managed to seize a major urban centre for the first time in 14 years. However, the government forces faced intense resistance, with Taliban fighters blocking roads, carrying out ambushes and setting roadside explosives. Power lines were also cut to foil a government counterattack, sources told Al Jazeera. The fall of Kunduz has dealt a major blow to the country’s NATO-trained security forces and highlighted the insur-

gency’s potential to expand beyond its rural strongholds. The fighters reportedly freed almost 600 prisoners, mostly former Taliban members, from jails in the city. Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, posted a triumphant picture on Twitter purportedly showing fighters raising the group’s trademark white flag at a roundabout in the city centre. Before Monday’s incursion, the Taliban made two attempts this year to capture Kunduz city, which has been encircled by the fighters for around a year. The group has been largely absent from Afghan cities since being driven from power by the US and its allies, but has maintained rule over swaths of the countryside. Source: Al-Jazeera

A Muslim teenager who became an overnight sensation after a Texas teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb has been withdrawn from his school, local me-

dia reported Tuesday. Ahmed Mohamed, 14, won invitations to the White House, Google and Facebook last week amid a surge of public support for the aspiring inventor who was taken away from school in handcuffs. “Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great,” Obama tweeted hours after the story broke. Mohamed’s father told the Dallas Morning News that all three of the family’s children are being withdrawn from the Irving Independent School District. “These kids aren’t going to be happy there,” Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed told the paper. The sudden attention, while welcome, has

been overwhelming for the family and Ahmed hasn’t been eating or sleeping well, his father said. “It’s torn the family, and makes us very confused,” Mohamed said. Plenty of schools have offered to take Ahmed, but his father thinks a bit of a break is in order. The family will be flying to New York on Wednesday after receiving invitations to meet with dignitaries at the United Nations. They are also trying to get visas to take Ahmed on a pilgrimage to Makkah. “I ask Allah to bless this time,” Mohamed said. “After that, we’ll see.” The son of Sudanese immigrants who live in a Dallas suburb, the young robotics fan brought in a home-made clock to impress a new teacher at MacArthur High School.

“It was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it and I got arrested,” he told reporters last week. Local police insisted that Mohammed’s ethnicity had nothing to do with the decision to arrest him on suspicion of bringing a hoax bomb to school. No charges were laid after it was determined the teen had no malicious intent. Along with the invitation to astronomy night at the White House next month, Mohamed also got a scholarship to NASA’s Space Camp invitations to drive NASA’s Opportunity rover, tour MIT and intern at Twitter. He posted a picture of himself visiting “amazing projects and people” at Google’s science fair on his Twitter account, @ IStandWithAhmed, Monday.

Trans-Pacific trade deal would end tariffs on wide range of exports: sources

As farmers and trade unions warn that the Trans-Pacific Partnership could cost jobs in the auto and agriculture sectors, sources say the secret proposal would be a boon to Canadian exporters. CTV News has learned all tariffs would be removed on a majority of Canadian industrial products, including metals and minerals, petroleum products, potash, steel, chemicals, plastics and industrial machinery, according to a source close to the negotiations. Canada currently exports about $158 billion annually of those goods to the other 11 countries involved in the talks, and that figure would likely increase after the elimination of tariffs. Trade Minister Ed Fast is attending discussions Atlanta, Ga., where an agreement in principle could be reached as early as Friday by a dozen Pacific countries, including the U.S., Japan and Australia. At a campaign stop in Vaughan, Ont., Conservative Leader Stephen Harper addressed concerns that the agreement might hurt Canada’s auto industry. Harper also said the Conservatives are the only party that can deal with tough trade negotiations. “Unlike the other parties, we’re not going to walk away from a trade negotiation at the first sign of worry,” he said. Unifor, Canada’s largest privatesector union is campaigning against the Conservatives, and wants the other parties to back away from any deal that it believes would negatively impact the auto industry. Its president, Jerry Dias, said the Conservatives should release the full text of the TPP deal before election day. “This government thinks they’re going to close the deal, they’re going to have a photo-op to say, ‘Look, we just signed a deal,’ without any intention of sharing the details with Canadians,” Dias told The Canadian Press. “They’re not going to get away with it. They’re going to have to tell the dairy farmers what’s in the deal. They’re going to have to tell the auto-parts companies what’s in

More Canadians are 65 and over than under age 15, StatsCan says

the deal.” Dias’ main concern is Japan’s lobbying efforts for the easing of “rulesof-origin” requirements, which would allow the country to export vehicles to North America with fewer Canadian-made parts. He’s concerned this provision will lead to trouble for Canada’s auto industry. Adam Taylor, former adviser to Fast, countered that argument on CTV’s Power Play, where he said that Canadian auto companies would benefit from selling more in places like Japan. “You forget that you’ll gain access to all those other countries,” said Taylor, who now works for consulting firm Ensight Canada. “(Japan is) the third largest economy in the world,” he added. “Gaining a preferential foothold into that market will been a boon for the auto sector.” Canada’s dairy industry has also been discussed during the TPP negotiations. In particular, other countries have asked for more access to Canada’s dairy sector, which could impact ridings in Quebec and Ontario where dairy is a major industry. On Tuesday, dairy farmers staged a protest against the agreement on Parliament Hill. Farmers have expressed concerns that the government will make concessions on supply management, which protects the Canadian dairy market from foreign producers. At a campaign event in Winnipeg, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said that there should be more transparency when it comes to trade negotiations. He said the Conservatives have not been open enough, causing uncertainty among those affected, including dairy farmers. “Yes, we need to protect our existing systems, which work to ensure that our agricultural communities and farms continue to be able to feed the rest of us in the country,” Trudeau said. “But at the same time, we need to do that in an open and transparent way.” Taylor also downplayed the potential impact on farmers, saying the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union has proven that free trade deals can be signed while “maintaining the (supply management) system.” During Monday evening’s Munk Debate, the proposed TPP deal also came up, with NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair noting that he doesn’t trust the Conservatives to protect the dairy industry. May argued that, in addition to hurting the dairy and egg industries, the TPP would increase pharmaceutical prices, empower foreign corporations to sue in Canada and impact crown corporations. For the first time ever, there are now more people in Canada age 65 and over than there are under age 15, according to Statistics Canada. The data agency said Tuesday that Canada’s population sat at 35,851,800 at the start of July, a figure that has increased by 308,100 or 0.9 in the past year. That’s the smallest annual increase in 17 years, but still the largest pace of growth seen in any G7 nation. Much of growth came in the form of people coming from other countries, as migration accounted for 60.8 per cent of the population growth. The rest was natural population growth, as people already in Canada had children. Canada met a milestone that demographers have seen coming for a long time. In the year ended in July, the population of people 65 and older is now larger than the number of children under 15. There were 5,780,900 Canadians 65 and older on July 1. That compares to an under-15 population of 5,749,400. In percentage terms, 16.1 per cent of Canadians were in the 65-and-over group in July, with under-15s accounting for just 16 per cent of the population. The cohort of people 65 and up isn’t just large in absolute terms, but their ranks are growing faster than the rest of us, too. The population growth rate for the over-64 set increased by 3.5 per cent during the year, four times faster than the population at large. That pace of growth has increased every year since 2011, the data agency said. But by international standards, Canada’s population of 65-andovers is still relatively small, and lower than any other G7 nation. In Japan, for example, 26 per cent of the population is over age 64. The bulge of aging baby boomers isn’t increasing evenly across Canada, however. Provincially, New Brunswick had the highest proportion of over-64s, at 19 per cent of

the province’s total population. Conversely, the lowest proportion in Canada was in Nunavut, at 3.7 per cent. Of the provinces, Alberta had the lowest proportion at 11.6 per cent. Nationally, there were 1.01 seniors for every child in Canada under age 15 in July. The ratio was highest in Nova Scotia at 1.35 and lowest in Nunavut at 0.12. Across all age groups, four provinces are making up a bigger and bigger share of Canada’s total population. In July, 86.3 per cent of people in Canada lived in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. Ontario is still Canada’s most populous province, with 13,792,100 people, Statistics Canada said. Quebec is the second most populated province at 8,263,600 people. The implications of the demographic rebalancing underway are massive, assistant professor Mike Moffatt of the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ont., says. “Immigration helps a little bit on the margins, but overall the aging is going to happen,” Moffatt said. “You can’t immigrate your way out of a demographic bubble.” The economic impacts of that bubble are already being felt. The number of Canadian women in the workforce into their late 60s has tripled in the last 15 years, Moffatt notes, something that’s already changing the makeup of the workforce in other developed countries. Fortunately, Canada is experiencing the baby boomer bulge comparatively late, so we can learn from the experiences of other countries in how to deal with accompanying problems. “As the Canadian population gets older, we’ve got more and more retired people,” Moffatt warns. “That puts pressure on the health system and pension system because there’s a smaller cohort of working age people to support that.” Source: CBC News

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced labour reforms to be enforced from January 1 that aim to curb abuse and protect the rights of millions of foreign workers. “We want to close the door on those who trick the simple worker,” Emirati Labour Minister Saqr Ghobash told a press conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The new measures, which will remove practices associated with a sponsorship system known as “kafala” will allow foreign workers to terminate their contract and change employer. The kafala system not only regulates entry and residence, but also requires that workers seek permission from employers to change jobs. Ghobash said that from January 2016, the UAE would take steps which, when com-

pleted, would get rid of “all the practices that were associated with kafala”. He said that under a new system, in which workers’ contracts would be lodged with the labour ministry rather than with employers, who currently hold the documents, “involuntary labour” would be prevented. “The worker cannot, under any circumstances, be made to, or otherwise be compelled, to remain in an employment relation,” a ministry statement said. A reorganisation of labour contracts would also stop so-called “substitution”, under which foreign workers sign one contract before they leave their home country and are compelled to renegotiate lower wages when they arrive in the Gulf. Foreign workers do many of the hard and sometimes dangerous jobs in the region, from construction to the oil industry, transport and services. They account for nearly half of the roughly 50 million population of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council and about 4.5 million of

the UAE’s nine-million population. Most blue-collar workers in Gulf states are hired on contracts from countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines, and many travel to the Middle East to escape poverty in their home countries. In some Gulf states, the passports of guest workers are held by the sponsor for the duration of their contracts. Although this is banned in the UAE, the practice survives. Asked if reforms on wider issues of labour abuse were in the pipeline, Ghobash said there was no country that stopped improving its labour situation, but the process took time. Nicholas McGeehan, a UAE researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the move against contract substitution was “a huge improvement and something we would fully support and applaud” and it was “good to see” the UAE feeling the need to reform. & I N T Hadith no: 662 Report Mistake PermalinkNarrated: Aisha The people used to fast on ashura (the tenth day of the month of muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Ka’ba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of ashura) may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so.”

Living an unaware life By:Harun Yahya The happy and joyful movements of a small child amuse people. The hard decisions and reactions to events that are so important to adults, such as economic crises, natural disasters, wars, and oppression, have no meaning for them. As long as they are not hungry or thirsty or have lost a toy, they live in contentment, unaware of what is going on around them. And as long as they are content, they unconsciously go on sleeping, playing, and laughing. However, although it may not be obvious at first, many people are hardly different from children when it comes to their level of awareness. This characteristic is especially evident in their lack of appreciation for such important matters as Allah’s existence and the Hereafter, the purpose of their creation, the certainty of death, and the account they will give to Him in the Hereafter for every action or thought while alive. Most people live according to their own desires and intentions, unaware of Allah’s commands and prohibitions, even though He informs us of them through clear signs. They only want to enjoy the world’s pleasures, be happy, and satisfy their own egos. They pursue its temporary allurements to the exclusion of all else, working all their lives to get what they want. Their greatest worries are that their efforts be in vain and that they will lose what they already have. However, this short life and everything pertaining to it will one day come to an end. Unaware of the eternal punishment awaiting all those who lived their lives without making any attempt to please Allah, they head toward the Day of Judgment, a day of great fear and distress for them. But they continue to desire the world’s transitory

allurements and worry only about losing them. Allah has created blessings, including their own bodies and many beautiful things wherever they may look, to remind human beings of His existence. At every moment and in every place, we see that creation is imbued with countless wonders: “In the creation of the heavens and Earth, and the alternation of the night and day, and the ships that sail the seas to people’s benefit, and the water that Allah sends down from the sky– by which He brings the ground to life when it was dead and scatters about in it creatures off every kind–– and the varying direction of the winds, and the clouds subservient between heaven and Earth, there are Signs for people who use their intellect.” (Qur’an, 2:164) Think of everything that happens and everything you see while you are awake. When you get up and look in the mirror, you see your body regenerated after a long sleep and notice how it continues to function perfectly without your interference. You see your body just as it was yesterday — your symmetrical and esthetically shaped body that started from the division of a single cell and now contains about 100 trillion of them; your body in which hundreds of complex functions occur in a perfect sequence of which you are not even aware. But most people pay no attention to these facts. When looking in the mirror, all they see is what their face generally looks like

or if their hair is combed. They think of nothing except work, school, or what they are going to do that day. Thus they fail to realize that every new day offers them another opportunity to draw closer to Allah. Perhaps this will be their last opportunity to do so, for this might be their last day on Earth. Most people, who cannot appreciate the value of this opportunity, generally busy themselves with trying to please only themselves or others. This is indeed a serious state of unawareness: A way of life that is completely divorced from Allah’s commands and prohibitions. This condition is caused by their unawareness that He created them only to serve Him. Unawareness poses a severe threat to everyone who is careless and fails to submit to Allah sincerely. Such people continue to be unaware of their true situation until they begin to sincerely abide by the Qur’an’s commands and prohibitions and do their best to remain aware at all times. Therefore, all readers of this article should acknowledge the possibility that they could have a certain degree of unawareness within themselves and realize that no one is immune to or safe from this insidious danger. Allah says in the Qur’an: “No indeed! Truly humanity is unbridled, seeing himself as self-sufficient” (Qur’an, 96:6-7). After people set aside their imaginary immunity and accept the Qur’an as their guide, they can analyze their situation, try to correct their errors and mistakes, and eventually overcome their unawareness. The main reason why people persist in

their unawareness, thereby allowing it to grow stronger every day, is that they are content with their own supposed perfection. Despite all of Allah’s warnings, unawareness quickly draws those who persist in it toward a horrible, indescribable, and eternal punishment. Allah created this world as a place of testing, and those who leave it without becoming aware will continue their lives eternally among the people of Hell. As revealed in the Qur’an, their eyes and ears have been sealed and their understanding removed. Their understanding and awareness are like those of animals. And, because they are so by choice, they are even lower than animals: “Do you suppose that most of them hear or understand? They are just like cattle. Indeed, they are even further astray!” (Qur’an, 25:44) “Those are the people whose hearts, hearing, and sight have been sealed up by Allah. They are the unaware.” (Qur’an, 16:108) Clearly satan uses unawareness, without any regard for conditions or surroundings, to tempt everyone to follow their egos’ desires. But this unawareness stalks only those who are content to live in such a state. Individuals of good conscience, who are not content to remain unaware and be friends of satan, always have a way out: Always remembering and turning to Him, fearing and respecting Him, and seeking His favor at all times. These dispel unawareness and raise people to an elevated level of awareness, wisdom, and faith. And this is the best, most comfortable, and surest way to attain eternal happiness. So, it is never too late to turn to Allah in true sincerity and hope for His mercy.

8 M I D D L E E A S T Arab states rap bid to Coalition seizes boat ‘politicize’ stampede carrying Iran arms for Houthis Dhul Hijjah 18, 1436 October 02, 2015

NEW YORK: Arab foreign ministers attending a UN meeting in New York have slammed Iran and other countries for trying to exploit the tragic death of pilgrims in Mina for political purposes. During a coordination meeting on the sidelines of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Monday, the ministers also praised the Kingdom for its efforts to help the Yemeni people, and restore the legitimate government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. The Arab ministers also discussed the Israeli attacks on Islamic holy sites in East Jerusalem, and said there is a need to place more pressure on the Israeli government to respect international resolutions and agreements. In addition, they urged an end to the killing of the Syrian people. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir, Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Relations Prince Turki bin Mohammed, and Saudi representative to the UN Abdullah Al-Alami attended the meeting. OIC Secretary-General Iyad Madani has already expressed confidence in Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the event. In a statement issued after the stampede, he expressed the hope that “no party would seek to take advantage of the pilgrimage and pilgrims ... in a controversial context that would divide rather than unite.” The foreign minister has vowed that if mistakes were made, those who made them

would be held accountable. The minister has blamed Tehran for playing politics. “We will reveal the facts when they emerge, and we will not hold anything back,” he said. This year’s Haj drew some 2 million pilgrims from 180 countries, though in recent years it has drawn more than 3 million without any major incidents. The Saudi Health Ministry says the death toll for the incident in Mina on Sept. 24 remains 769 people, with another 934 injured in the crush of pilgrims. Faisal Alzahrani, the Health Ministry’s general director of communications, said that civil defense authorities would be responsible for announcing any new death toll. Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, Interior Ministry spokesman, has clarified that the nearly 1,100 photos distributed to foreign diplomats to help identify nationals who have died in the Haj are from the entire pilgrimage and not just the Mina stampede. Officials in India and Pakistan said a day earlier that Saudi officials gave their diplomats some 1,090 pictures of those killed in last Thursday’s stampede. Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, an official in Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, said 46 Indonesian pilgrims died in the Mina incident, while 10 were injured and 90 remain missing. Saudi officials have launched an investigation into the disaster. Source: arabnews.

How I survived

By AFZAL KHAN Mina’s Street 204 was echoing with the chants of “Labbaik, Allahumma labbaik” and “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,” on Thursday. Religious fervor was at its peak, although the long route from “Extended Mina” (Muzdalifa) to the Jamarat did not offer any respite from the intense heat. Transcending the diversity of cultures, color and creed, pilgrims of various nationalities were moving shoulder to shoulder, without any prejudices, in a disciplined manner. Everything seemed to be on course that morning — the first day of the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual — until suddenly something went wrong. A small group of about 10 pilgrims, with one of them pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair, barged in from the opposite direction. There was nobody to stop this group. The situation started turning chaotic, but nobody could gauge the ensuing magnitude of the tragedy. I tried to push back one of the “intruders,” but he turned wild and failed to understand what he and the other few were doing.

A couple of abandoned wheelchairs in the area added to the difficulties. However, after about 15-20 minutes of pushing and nudging, I got out of the place. I was yearning for fresh air as I had almost suffocated. After joining the groups marching ahead, I was too exhausted to even turn around and see what was happening. My 30-year-old nephew, who was with me, exclaimed: “What a relief. Looks like the crowd has become less.” Both of us had, however, failed to understand that we had just left a place that had turned into a death trap. A total of 769 pilgrims lost their lives and 934 were injured in the incident. The stoning at the Jamarat went in a peaceful and systematic manner. The water spraying fans and water coolers at the Jamarat provided the much-needed relief to pilgrims thirsting for water. The tonsuring of heads seemed smooth, barring stray incidents of a handful of pilgrimturned-barbers trying to make that extra buck by offering their services. Source: arabnews.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: The Saudiled coalition battling Yemen’s Shiite rebels said Wednesday that it has foiled an attempt by Iran to smuggle missiles and other weapons to the rebels aboard a fishing boat bound for Yemen. Saudi Arabia and its coalition allies fear that Iran is actively providing aid to the rebels, known as Houthis, as a way to gain a foothold on the Arabian Peninsula. Iran acknowledges providing political support to the rebels but denies arming them directly. The weapons seizure took place early afternoon on Saturday, about 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of the Omani port of Salalah, according to a coalition statement carried by the SPA. The ship was carrying 18 pieces of one type of anti-tank missile and 54 of another, as well as launchers and other equipment, according to the coalition. Fourteen crew members aboard the ship have been arrested, including the captain, identified as Bakhsh Jakal. The ship was registered to an Iranian named Hogan Mohammed Hout, licensed as a fish-

ing vessel and was carrying papers indicating it was checked by port and customs officials in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province, according to the coalition. Photos released by the coalition showed a large traditional wooden dhow, a type of vessel commonly used in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, with a brown hull and blue-and-white superstructure. Iranian state media carried no report on the allegations, and Iranian authorities could not immediately be reached for comment. A spokesman for the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, which operates around the Arabian Peninsula, had no immediate comment. The US is providing logistical support to the coalition. Yemen has been embroiled in fighting that pits the Houthis and forces loyal to a former president against the Saudi-backed and internationally recognized government as well as southern separatists, local militias and Sunni extremists. The coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the rebels and their allies since March. Source: arabnews.

Palestinian flag raised at UN as Mahmoud Abbas renounces agreements with Israel Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas seemingly made good on his threat to drop a “bombshell” in Wednesday’s speech to the UN General Assembly when he declared that the Palestinians cannot continue to be bound by 20-year-old security and economic agreements with Israel. Israel’s refusal to commit to agreements reached in the mid-1990s known as the Oslo Accords “render us an authority without real powers,” Abbas said. Given that, he said, “we cannot continue to be bound” by them. Holy See agrees to fly flag at UN in time for Pope’s visit It was the Palestinian leader’s most serious warning yet to Israel that he might walk away from engagement with Israel and dissolve the Palestinian Authority. He stopped short

of accompanying his threat with a deadline. He also accused Israel of sabotaging U.S. efforts to broker peace and said Israeli security operations at the AlAqsa mosque in Jerusalem — part of the same site as the Dome of the Rock and the Temple Mount, major religious sites for Muslims and Jews, respectively — could lead to a religious war. Poll Tracker: Tories drop to

3rd place, NDP’s lead shrinks Two new polls — published after the EKOS survey discussed below — continue to show weakening numbers for the New Democrats. But they also show the Conservatives in third place. A Léger poll published in the Globe and Mail on Friday put the New Democrats at 31 per cent, followed by the Liberals at 30 per cent and the Conservatives at 28 per cent. It had the NDP down marginally, but recorded larger drops for the party in Ontario and British Columbia. Léger’s previous poll already had the Conservatives in third, so the order of the parties has not changed in this survey. The same goes for a new Forum

Research poll published in the Toronto Star on Saturday. The poll put the NDP in front with 36 per cent, with the Liberals at 32 per cent and the Conservatives at 24 per cent. Here again, the order of the parties did not change, and the Liberals and Conservatives both had an uptick that was within the margin of error, but the New Democrats were down four points from where they stood the week before. As a result of adding these two new polls to the Poll Tracker, the Conservatives are now in third place behind the Liberals and the NDP in both projected support levels and likely seat wins.Source: CBC News

Conservative Alberta and opposition parties stand to gain

Here’s a political brain-bender: Alberta could be the decider in the federal election campaign. It might happen. If this election all comes down to a handful of seats determining who wins or who loses, Alberta is in the running to play the role of kingmaker. Calgary, Edmonton could show cracks in Conservatives’ fortress Alberta Poll Tracker: Follow the latest polling trends Conservative Devinder Shory a ‘no-show’ at Calgary-Skyview debate Several Alberta seats could be up for grabs, poll analyst says Alberta, the Rock of Gibraltar of conservative Canada, has cracked — just how deeply and at what cost to the federal Conservatives is still unclear, but in this campaign every crack and cranny counts.

In 2011, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives won all but one seat in Alberta. The NDP took one in Edmonton. Polls suggest at least eight ridings are in play this time. There is political suspense in the province for the first time in a long time, and it is infectious. “It’s kind of sparking this chain reaction between all people, like all the young people are starting to realize that, yes, my vote can count and that if we get together our voices can be heard,” says first-year science student Kevin Ma at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. All across campus, students are buzzing about voting. The U of A is one of 10 universities across the country that will allow voting on campus. Source: CBC News

New Campaign Aims To End Silence On Domestic Violence

DOMESTIC violence is an issue that affects everyone, yet talking about it is tough. A new radio and social media campaign – #SaySomething – aims to end the silence by encouraging all British Columbians to speak up and learn how they can safely help. In 2013, there were 12,359 police-reported victims of domestic violence, though research suggests this may represent less than 25% of the total number, as the majority of these crimes continue to go unreported. She may be your sister, your best friend, your neighbour or your co-worker. Knowing how and when to speak up – not to mention how to make sure those experiencing abuse stay safe when you do so – can be a delicate balancing act. #SaySomething is a call to action that recognizes how silence can feed into the abusive attitudes and behaviours that enable domestic violence. The campaign seeks not only to raise awareness, but also to provide practical advice and strategies on how and when to safely seek help. The message – that we need to break the silence in order to stop the violence – will be spread through radio spots, multi-lingual promotional videos and online advertising across several social media platforms. A host website − http://www.saysomethingbc.ca/ − provides information and an array of resources for victims, perpetrators, service providers and the bystanders who want to help. Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux on Friday announced the launch of the new campaign with anti-violence partners in Surrey as part of the lead-up to International Women’s Day (March 8). Something campaign is intended to work in concert with existing awareness initiatives, such as Be More Than a Bystander, the Moose Hide campaign and B.C.’s Toughest Men. It builds on the momentum of B.C.’s Provincial Domestic Violence Plan, launched in February 2014, and is one of the first steps in government’s broader strategy for a Violence Free B.C. Cadieux said: “Domestic violence is too often an unspoken evil. We may sense that something’s wrong, but we don’t think it’s any of our business so we don’t speak up when we should. This campaign provides easy access to information on safe ways to bring up tough topics and work together to end domestic violence. Please say something and help make B.C. a safer place.” Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton said: “This campaign, focused on domestic violence, is an immediate, early action of the Violence Free BC strategy – the Province’s long-term roadmap to address all forms of violence against women. We all have a role to play in making B.C. safer for women, and this campaign identifies the signs of domestic violence and how to help. Working together, we must strive to prevent violence before it starts, respond to violence when it happens, and help women rebuild from its devastating effects.” Tracy Porteous, Ending Violence Association of BC, said: “Throughout history, domestic and sexual violence against women have thrived in the shadows. Most people don’t speak up because they don’t know what to say, don’t know what to do or know where help can be found. This campaign is another step forward in breaking the silence. Reaching out to those who are struggling will help to shine a light on a subject that has been hidden for too long.” Quick Facts: * From 2004 to 2009, it is estimated that more than 160,000 British Columbians were victims of domestic violence. * From 2004 to 2014, domestic violence claimed the lives of 113 women in B.C ─ an average of 10 women each year. * The social media campaign is being supported with an $80,000 funding commitment. * The B.C. government commits more than $70 million per year in prevention and inter-

vention services, as well as programs to help families involved in domestic violence and other crimes. * Last year, more than $3.5 million in civil forfeiture grants were used to support vulnerable women. A further $3 million in grants is being directed this year to support anti-violence and prevention initiatives, with a priority focus on violence against women. The Province has also committed to dedicating a portion of civil forfeiture funds in future years to support the Violence Free BC strategy. * The Violence Free BC strategy outlines the path to creating a province where all women have the supports they need to help prevent violence, escape from violence situations, and recover if they have been victims of violence. * In February, government helped open Surrey’s newly integrated Domestic Violence Unit – the sixth of its kind in British Columbia. * The Provincial Domestic Violence Plan, co-ordinated through the Provincial Domestic Violence Office in consultation with the public and anti-violence stakeholders, is a three-year, $5.5-million plan to make B.C. a safer place for women, children and anyone who has been affected by domestic violence. * The Provincial Office of Domestic Violence was created in March 2012 as the permanent lead for the B.C. government, focused on strengthening the services and supports available for children, women and families affected by domestic violence. Q:What is domestic violence exactly? A:There is a common misconception about domestic violence. I do not use the words domestic violence as a substitute for physical violence. Domestic violence is much more than that. It is the ongoing and intentional use of threats, intimidation, manipulation and physical or sexual violence by someone seeking power over their partner. Q:How big a problem is domestic violence? A:The problem is very big. 67% of all Canadians say they personally know at least one woman who has been sexually or physically assaulted. Q:Women are mostly the victims/survivors. Can men/children be victims of domestic violence? A:At Surrey Women’s Centre we serve both men and women. 98% of who we see each year are women and girls. While men may report being physically assaulted by a partner – the pattern of threats, intimidation, manipulation and fear for their lives is often not present. Children exposed to their father’s use of violence are being harmed. We can keep those children be safe by working to keep their mothers safe. These cannot be separate interventions. I’m a mother. I understand. My safety and my child’s safety are linked. Q:What is the biggest myth surrounding domestic violence? A:The biggest myth about domestic violence is that it only involves or must involve physical violence. The truth is that physical violence is just one form of control an abuser will use. Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviour used by an abuser to exert power and control over his partner. Q:Domestic violence seems like such a personal issue that should be handled by family and professionals. Why on earth are we encouraging people to ‘say something’ when it could be at the very least embarrassing and at the very worst dangerous to do so? A:Women are suffering in silence. Women are suffering because of our silence. Domestic violence is not a private family issue. We have a responsibility as a community to stand up to the abusers of women and children. This does not mean exposing an abuser and breaking the confidence of a woman who has shared her story with you. It does mean believing her and knowing she is not responsible nor can she control the abuse. We need to be asking how can we help? Saying something means using our words and taking action to show that we don’t support

the use or threat of violence. Q:What is the best way to help someone you think is experiencing domestic violence? A:Listen without judgment. Maintain her confidentiality. Offer practical help such as a safe place to stay. Reach out and connect her to resources that can help assess risk and plan for safety. You can call Surrey Women’s Centre at 604 583-1295. Q:Are there signs to look out for that indicate that you or someone you know may be at risk of experiencing domestic violence? A: Yes, there are definitely some red flags that we all need to be aware of. What we should be looking for are any signs that her partner exerts his power and control over her. A couple should be equal partners. Is he jealous and controlling? Does he look for ways to isolate her from her friends and family? Does he make threats about what he would do if she ever left him? Some men will even go as far as making threats of suicide. Family and friends may be the first to see these red flags so it’s important for them to know what they’re looking for. Q:If a woman discloses that there is domestic violence in the home, could authorities take the children out of that home? A:The authorities are not interested in removing children from their mothers. As part of my role at the Surrey Women’s Centre, I work together with the Ministry of Children and Families to keep mothers and their children together and safe from domestic violence. We want any intervention by the authorities to be a positive thing in the lives

of women and children and for the violence in their home to stop. Q: If there was only one thing you could tell someone about domestic violence, what would that be? A: The one thing that I would tell people is that domestic violence knows no boundaries. It happens across all races, religions and economic levels. Domestic violence is a social issue and not a private matter. It affects us all. Q: What kind of help is available in B.C. to those who experience domestic violence? A: If someone is in immediate danger, they should call 911. Community-based victim service programs are specially trained to support women and children escaping domestic violence. There are also transition houses, women centres, and counselling programs. To find a service available in your community, you can call VictimLINK or dial 211 from anywhere in B.C. And of course, you can call the Surrey Women’s Centre at 604 583-1295. Short URL: http://www.voiceonline.com

Harmony- one might achieve to a certain extent, but bringing unity to the Muslim community on any issue is one of the impossible tasks one should never dare to embark. This might be true for all the other communities too as, humans are designed in this manner by the Supreme Creator. We have different ideas, reasons, thoughts and intellect. Every thought and idea is true to its believer. Sophists, the group of Greek philosophers teaching political ethics in the 500 B.C. era said that ‘Man is the measure of everything.’ The thought, brought a unique importance for every human being, but it took away the absolute value from everything thus leading to chaos. Let us ignore of gathering everyone behind the idea of supporting unanimously to a single political party in the upcoming Federal Elections of Canada. However, one should not ignore his / her right to vote. It is not a right alone; it is the responsibility of exercising that right. It does not cost us anything apparently, but it costs us our life and the lives of our children and the children of their children if looked deeper with a concern for our

Promise yourself that you would vote to the choice of your party or the candidate. Who do you like and what do you like is not questionable, none is answerable to none. However, all of us are answerable to ourselves and to our coming generations if we ignore the importance and do not exercise our right to vote. Please promise yourselves that you would vote. Bill Blair: Harper’s failed marijuana policies are putting more young people at risk while enriching criminal gangs TORONTO – When it comes to keeping marijuana away from our young people, Stephen Harper does not get it. Harper’s approach, including increased mandatory minimum sentences, has led to one result: according to a 2013 UNICEF report, Canadian teens lead the developed world in cannabis use. Meanwhile, organized criminal gangs are raking in millions of dollars selling marijuana, and making our streets, schoolyards, and neighbourhoods less safe. On top of that, Harper’s mandatory minimum laws are being struck down. “The Harper Conservatives refuse to create policy based on evidence, and instead rely on ideology,” said Liberal candidate for Scarborough Southwest, Bill Blair. “They choose to ignore the facts, and press on with an approach that’s failing our teen-

agers and our communities, making it easier for young people to access drugs that can adversely affect them.” “The Liberals are the only party proposing a fresh and responsible approach on how we deal with marijuana. Instead of leaving it in the hands of organized crime, we will – in collaboration with the provinces and territories – strictly regulate marijuana the way we do for alcohol,” said Mr. Blair. “This will ensure that its sale is controlled, and that teenagers do not have access to it. That’s the only way we can ensure the safety of our communities, and lower drug use among young people.” Even prominent Conservatives disagree with Harper. Conservative MP Scott Reid thinks marijuana should be legal (Huffington Post, September 29, 2015).

Respect For Science At The Core Of Mulcair Climate Agenda IQALUIT — Speaking today in Iqaluit, where the impact of the changing climate is readily apparent, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair announced his plan to reverse the damage Stephen Harper has done to Canada’s scientific community and to put science at the core of the NDP’s plan to tackle climate change. “In the face of overwhelming evidence of climate change, Stephen Harper made it his priority to muzzle scientists and to stop leading experts from sharing important scientific information whenever it didn’t suit Conservative ideologies and objectives,” said Mulcair. “An NDP government will reverse this alarming trend and promote the voice of Canada’s scientists, as they are key to the health and safety of Canadians.” The NDP plan to restore science-based decision making includes

an end to the Conservatives’ policy of muzzling scientists. Mulcair will also establish the Office of the Parliamentary Science Officer to support parliamentarians with factual, science-based analysis. Mulcair also committed $100 million to the initiative to allow 25 northern and remote communities to reduce their impact on climate, through investments in wind, small-scale hydro and other clean energy to replace diesel generation.“Support for the north, starts in the north,” said Mulcair. “Our northern clean energy initiatives will save northern communities from excessive fuel costs, improve community health, and greatly reduce local impacts on climate change.”Only Tom Mulcair and the NDP have the plan and the leadership to defeat Stephen Harper and to improve Canada’s environment for future generations.

Do Your Children Know These Life Skills?

By Joanna Mazewski The other day my a good friend and I were talking about teaching our children responsibility and the importance of helping out with household chores and picking up after themselves. For me, it feels like it’s going to be a lifelong battle as I can’t even get my husband to throw his socks in the hamper, but trust me when I say that I emphasize cleaning up on a daily basis. Even though I might look like an extra from Monsters University on some days, mom only has two hands you know! Still, my friend and I couldn’t understand how some teenagers and college-aged kids these days lack some very basic life skills, such as doing their own laundry, ironing, or changing the oil in their car. And by that I don’t mean actually doing it themselves, but

remembering to take their vehicles to an auto shop when it’s needed. I mean, how are we not teaching our children the basic skills they need to take care of themselves? I recently came across this excellent chart that highlights what skills children should or need to know by the time they reach a certain age. Tell us, do you agree with this chart? I can honestly say that the one skill I could probably use a refresher course on is performing CPR and perhaps balancing a checkbook, because I cannot remember the last time I even wrote anything in mine, lol! Thankfully we’ve got online banking to help us with that. Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

24Th Annual Ismaili Walk Raises Over $230,000 To Improve Mental Health Care In The Community

By: Khaleel Meghji On Sunday, September 20th, the 24th annual Ismaili Walk took place at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. Participants celebrated in some great wet-coast weather, alive with the spirit of service and caring for the community. British Columbians from across Vancouver attended the Walk raising over $230,000. This year, the Ismaili Muslim Community of BC partnered with VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division, to raise awareness and funds in support of the Joseph and Rosalie Segal Mental Family Health Centre and Living Life to the full for Youth. Over the past 24 years, the Ismaili Walk has become one of the city’s favourite family events. The 24th Annual Ismaili Walk featured a full day of live entertainment, delicious

meals, and activities for the entire family. Since its inception, the Ismaili Walk has raised over $4.5M. By: Shruti-Prakash-Joshi Thousands of people attended PICS 8th Annual Mega Job fair and BC Small Business Expo at Aria Banquet Hall in Surrey, Thursday September 24, 2015. These job seekers were extremely successful in making connections with at least 70 exhibitors who were on their toes all day explaining their businesses, interviewing and accepting resumes. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the Megajob Fair. Even after a gap of three years, PICS has been successful in garnering tremendous response both from the business community as well as the public at large”, said Charan

Gill, CEO of PICS. Satbir Cheema, Director, PICS Employment programs and Planning attributed the success of the event to all sponsors, supporters, exhibitors, the organizing team and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. “A special shout out to Vancity, without whose support this event wouldn’t have been a possibility. I would also like to thank our media sponsors Business in Vancouver and The Leader newspaper as well as our business supporter Surrey Board of Trade,” said Cheema. PICS is extremely grateful to Nanak Foods who diligently served delicious snacks to all the at-

tendees and to Subway and Taco Del Mar who graciously sponsored food for all staff, volunteers and exhibitors at the event. The water at the event was sponsored by a former PICS client Mr. Faruq Patel who now owns Delta H2O To Go. Some exciting door prizes were given at the event as well and these included a 49 inch Toshiba LED TV sponsored by Khalsa Credit unions, an iPAD Air sponsored by Sign Hub, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 donated by CWC immigration and an HP lap top sponsored by PICS Employment Programs. The exhibitors at the event were extremely

happy with the arrangements and have promised to be a part of PICS Mega Job Fair next year as well. “We are happy that we were able to connect job seekers with prospective employers and we hope that next year will be even bigger and better,” said Mr. Gill.

Eclipse: Sun or Moon By: Ms. Asma Shams Mortgage Broker Oh God, What eclipse has been on my happiness? May times, we hear such words from our elderly members like grandmothers, mothers, and aunties. An eclipse is a temporary phase which covers sun or moon. So are the problems. The conflicts between family members’ problems of our family, all of this is for a short period of time. Some, of course, have a long lasting effect on our life and our relationships. How do people of different religion and region deal with eclipse? Simple: by praying. This sound very simple, but yes, praying is the most common and effective way to deal with life and its problems. After that, come necessary steps

and actions. Eclipse is a scientific happening but so is life and events in universe. This is our journey of life of different nature and personalities living under one roof even though they are related by blood and heart. It’s a unique example of diversity in unity. Each person is different and in some ways same at the same time. The youth today is changed life has become more fast then before. Today, we have devices such as an iPhone which has changed the outlook towards life. If you call your child, he or she may not answer but if you message him or her then you will get an immediate reply. Actually this is all very interesting dear parents more next time.

Happiness is like a perfume. The more you spray it on others, the more it will smell good.

Sadness!

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor It’s perfectly normal to have sadness in your life. Some kinds, however, can be a cause for concern. If you are feeling sad at this moment—or have been experiencing a down mood for a while—look honestly at your situation. There are three types of sadness most of us fall into: This is a passing mood, lasting a few days or, at most, a week. It sometimes has a cause and sometimes not. The best remedy—as we all know but, sadly, often fail to remember—is to lower your stress, go to bed early and get eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, make sure you exercise and break up your normal routine a bit. Boredom, lack of sleep, being too sedentary and excess stress are all associated with a sad mood.

good reason for it. In this case, you need to process your sadness, let nature take its course and share your feelings with someone who can counsel and console you. Bottling up your feelings and feeling victimized are never helpful. Triggered sadness lasts an unpredictable length of time, yet in an emotionally healthy adult, within six months there is a return to the level of emotions that existed before the trigger was set off.

Triggered sadness:

Depression:

This includes a downturn in mood because something undeniably bad has happened to you, such as losing your job or the death of someone close to you. In such a situation, you will generally know what the trigger is. The problem is that most people feel helpless when they enter extended sadness, even when they know there is a

If you feel sad, exhausted, helpless, hopeless and unable to sleep or eat for few weeks, you should suspect that you are depressed. There is often a trigger for this condition, but it is usually something that you could normally cope with. When coping breaks down, depression takes over. So if you feel that you can’t cope, even with minor stress and ordinary setbacks, mild to moderate depression may be indicated. This is a complicated mood disorder that varies from person to person. If you suspect that you or someone close to you is depressed, it is very important to see professional help. Remember it’s never too late.......... shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Owner: Hammad Khaliq

(5 lb.) Lamb Leg 2 ounces of Almonds (Baadaam) (blanched) ½ lb. Onions (coarsely chopped) 4 Green Chillies (Hari Mirch) (chopped) 8 cloves of Garlic (Lehsan) (peeled) 4 (1”) cubes of Ginger (Adrak) (peeled and coarsely chopped) ½ tsp. Whole Cloves (Loung) 16 Cardamom Pods (Choti Ilaichi) 1 (2”-piece) of Cinnamon Stick (Dal Cheeni) 10 Black Peppercorns (Saabut Kaali Mirch) 2 tbsp. Cumin Seeds (Sufaid Saabut Zeera) (grounded) 4 tsp. of Coriander Seeds (Dhania) (grounded) ½ tsp. Cayenne Peppers 3 ½ tsp. Salt ½ tsp. Garam Masala Powder 20 fl. oz. Plain Yogurt 6 tbsp. Vegetable Oil 4 tbsp. Raisins (Kishmish) • ½ ounce Almonds (Baadaam) (blanched & slivered) Prepration: • Make sure that all the fat has been trimmed from the outside of the lamb leg and that most of the (parchment-like white skin) has been pulled off. • Put the lamb leg in a baking dish made, preferably, of pyrex or stainless steel. Add the almonds, onions, garlic, ginger, green chillies, and 3 tablespoons of the plain yogurt into the container of a food processor or blender and blend until you have a paste. Put the remaining yogurt into a bowl. • Beat lightly with a fork or a whisk until it is smooth and creamy. • Add the paste from the processor, the cumin, coriander, cayenne, salt and garam masala powder and mix. Push some of the spice paste into all of the openings in the lamb. • Spread the paste evenly on the underside of the leg (the side that originally had less fat.) • Now, using a small, sharp, pointed knife make deep slashes in the meat, and push in the spice paste with your fingers. Turn the leg over so its outer side (the side that was once covered with fat) is on the top. • Spread a very thick layer of paste over it. Again, make deep slashes with the knife and push the spice paste into the slashes. • Pour all of the remaining spice paste over and around the meat. Cover with a plastic cling film and refrigerate for 24 hours. • Take the baking dish with the meat out of the refrigerator and let the meat come to room temperature. Remove the cling film. • Heat the oil in a small frying pan over medium flame. When it gets hot, put in the cloves, cardamom pods, cinnamon and peppercorns. When the cloves swell - (this takes just a few seconds) - pour the hot oil and spices over the leg of lamb. • Preheat oven to gas mark 6, 400 F. Cover the baking dish tightly either with its own lid or with a large piece of aluminium foil. Bake, covered, for 1 hour and 30 minutes. • Remove the foil and bake uncovered for 45 more minutes. • Baste 3-4 times with the sauce during this period. Scatter, or arrange in a pattern, the sultanas and almonds over the top of the leg and bake for another 5-6 minutes. • Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it sit in a warm place for 15 minutes. • Take the leg out of the pan and set it on a warm platter. Spoon off all of the fat from the top of the sauce. Use a slotted spoon and fish out all of the whole spice in the sauce. Discard the spices. • Pour the sauce around the lamb leg.

Pakistan defend 136 again to win series

The second T20I between Pakistan and Zimbabwe more or less followed the same script as the first. Having chosen to bat, Pakistan scraped to 136 again, and the Zimbabwe batsmen were never on course during the chase. Umar Akmal struck a busy 38 to lend the visitors late boost after a regular fall of wickets, and the target was made to look bigger with the Pakistan bowlers dismantling the Zimbabwe top order inside five overs. The asking rate continued to rise and the hosts eventually fell short by 15 runs. Chamu Chibhabha was given out lbw in the third over of the chase despite the ball pitching outside leg stump, Hamilton Masakadza made room and carved Mohammad Irfan to third man, while some sharp fielding from the tag team of Shahid Afridi and Sohaib Maqsood ran out Craig Ervine. Imad Wasim then struck in his second over when Richmond Mutumbami, scoreless for seven balls, was bowled through the gate. The Pakistan fielders cranked up the intensity, cut down runs and ably backed their bowlers up. Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza offered some resistance with a 60-run

partnership, using nudges and bunts while occasionally attempting reverse-sweeps and slogs. Just as Zimbabwe looked to find a higher gear, Raza was dismissed by a canny slower ball from Imran Khan for his maiden international wicket. At that point, the equation read 53 runs from 23 balls. Elton Chigumbura, though, gave Zimbabwe an outside chance when he hit two sixes off Imran over long-off in the 17th over. The first one was palmed over the fence by Ahmed Shehzad, and the second cleared him comfortably. The returning Irfan, coming in for Wahab Riaz, snuffed out Zimbabwe’s slender chance by having Chigumbura caught at long-on for 17 off 8 balls. Williams and Luke Jongwe fought it out but could only reduce the margin of defeat. While Irfan generated typical extra bounce even on a slow pitch, Imran was impressive with his assortment of slower cutters. They finished with combined figures of 8-0-60-4 as Pakistan claimed their third straight T20 series win. The match-winning target was set up by Akmal, who came in at 72 for 4, and boosted Pakistan’s innings. He began

with a brace of fours before he launched the first six of the game off the penultimate ball of the innings. Akmal was also adept in finding gaps and Wasim managed a couple of fours as Pakistan took 14 runs off the last over. The start too had been bright before the middle order botched it up. Mohammad Hafeez, the other change in Pakistan’s XI, did not take much time to find his bearings, playing a handsome drive and two pulls. However, Tinashe Panyangara dismissed Shehzad for seven in the fourth over, and two overs later Hafeez was undone by the slowness of the pitch when he tamely chipped Jongwe to short midwicket. The Shoaibs - Malik and Maqsood - threatened to mount a recovery but were foiled by the spinners. Their 30-run stand

Jack Warner — an ex-FIFA vice president and former ally of the body’s president Sepp Blatter — was barred from all football activities by FIFA’s ethics committee over repeated misconduct. “He was a key player in schemes involving the offer, acceptance, and receipt of undisclosed and illegal payments,” a committee statement said of the 72-year-old Warner, who previously led Concacaf, the confederation of North and Central America and the Caribbean. The latest judgement against the thoroughly-tarnished Warner came as the Swiss justice ministry approved the extradition of former Costa Rican federation boss Eduardo Li to the United States,

where he faces a range of charges linked to corruption. Warner and Li were both named in the US justice department indictments that were announced in May and which ignited an unprecedented crisis within world football. With the scandals continuously widening, there are growing calls for immediate change at the top. South Korean former FIFA vice president Chung Mong-Joon, who is a candidate to replace Blatter, called for a task force to run football’s world body after Switzerland placed Blatter under criminal investigation for mismanagement. Blatter, 79, told FIFA staff on Monday that he will stay on as president while cooperating with Swiss prosecutors. He has said he would stand down when a new election is held in February. Michel Platini, the powerful head of European governing body UEFA has been implicated in the Swiss probe, but has insisted he did nothing wrong as he tries to preserve his hopes of replacing Blatter. Warner and Li were both among the 14 people — nine FIFA officials and five sports marketing executives — charged in the US over bribery in football deals worth more than $150 million dating back to 1991. Warner is facing

12 charges of wire fraud, racketeering and money laundering, while Li is accused of taking bribes in connection with the sale of sports marketing rights. Warner is fighting extradition from his homeland in Trinidad and Tobago to the US, with a hearing set for December. Li appeared to lose that fight on Tuesday, when the Swiss justice ministry approved his transfer to US jurisdiction, although the Costa Rican has 30 days to file an appeal. Warner’s name has also become central to the Swiss probe targeting Blatter, which is focused in part on a 2005 television rights sale to the Caribbean Football Union, allegedly at a hugely deflated price. Swiss investigators are also looking at a two-million-franc ($2-million) payment made by FIFA to Platini in 2011 for a work reportedly done a decade earlier. Both Blatter and Platini, still the two most powerful men in world football, insist the payment was legitimate although neither has explained why it took so long to finalize compensation. Chung, a strong candidate to replace Blatter, called Tuesday for an extraordinary executive committee meeting which could establish an emergency task force “that will enable the FIFA secretariat to function without interruption”. He described the allega-

ended when Malik dragged Graeme Cremer to long-on. Instead of going back to rebuilding mode, Maqsood advanced down the track the following over and played an injudicious shot: skewing one into the lap of backward point. Rizwan and Afridi also failed but Akmal lifted Pakistan, despite good variations from Panyangara and Jongwe at the death. Source: Cricinfo

FIFA bans former VP Jack Warner for life

tions against Blatter as “another sad day” for FIFA and said the organization, which should be preparing for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is in “total meltdown”. Days before Blatter was placed on notice by Swiss authorities, FIFA secretary general Jérôme Valcke was suspended over allegations of involvement in tickets sold at inflated prices. Although Blatter has insisted he will stay in office until February, FIFA’s ethics committee could force him out at any time. There has been unconfirmed speculation that the panel is set to hear evidence against the Swiss national, possibly leading to suspension, a process that could also implicate Platini. The former French star’s involvement in an ethics committee review would further complicate the FIFA presidential vote that he had been favoured to win. Aside from Chung, another leading candidate in the race is Prince Ali bin al Hussein, a former FIFA vice president from Jordan. Chung said Monday that if elected he will stand for only one term to carry out reforms. “The most urgent task at hand is to root out corruption from within FIFA,” he said. “Justice must be served.” Source: The Local
