Strategic Voting For Positive Change

Beyond doubt, Canadians are desperate for regime change. During the four days of early polls, the number of voters was crazy at many locations. Obviously, the purpose was to vote for the candidates of their choice. Nevertheless, the voters seemed willing to compromise and became strategic voters instead just for ridding the status quo. No matter what, time is ripe for electing the favourite candidates through “choice-voting” or “strategic-voting.” Mostly the voters are interested to stop the present government from getting re-elected. There is no logical thinking on the recessionary economy, however, a widespread frustration and anti Harper anger created the emotive voters. Trend is to vote for the one who has the best chance of defeating the Conservatives, regardless of political affiliation. Indeed, one must be looking for what is best for Canada. The upcoming Federal election means the best chance for getting rid of Harper regime and electing a government that has no choice but to listen to everyone indiscriminately. This confirms that the voting people are anxiously waiting for the end of “Harper era.” This explains reasons behind strategic voting: As defeating the Conservatives has always been priority of the dis-satisfied public, so comes the tactical voting. This is exactly where “voters’ perception” becomes necessary: Campaigning becomes so crafty and media strategies do focus on affecting voter’s perception. They are helpful in shaping the way voters see their candidates.

Disadvantage of strategic voting: If one identifies with one party and is willing to vote differently for another party—there is conscience issue. Voting for something one doesn’t believe in may or may not lead to one’s disappointment in future. Although, Mulcair did the right thing for standing up for rights and against fear mongering around the niqab and road to power for the NDP was a strong showing in Quebec and BC with a moderate showing everywhere else, yet due to the xenophobia and demagoguery of the Harper party and the Bloc, the NDP is now struggling in Quebec. With the apparent collapse of NDP support in Quebec, the Liberals will also be scrambling to make some unanticipated gains in Trudeau’s home province, which has turned into a four-way race. Fact of course is, people are not happy with the status quo, they’re not happy with Mr Harper and his divisive politics. They really want change,” Bains said. “They see that Mr Trudeau and the Liberal Party represent that change.” Moreover, media circles and politicians are endorsing Trudeau, and are busy publishing stories and graphs to back up their decision. Wow! The Liberals enjoy their Liberal Waves. Justin Trudeau has exceeded the expectation. He is an excellent communicator and very charismatic leader. Encouraged by improving poll results, Trudeau’s advisers believe the party is in a position to draw in voters from both the right and left side of the political spectrum. The Liberal party has

invested a lot of time and money into modernizing its technology to identify potential supporters. Canada’s Liberal party within reach of election win is now gone into final mode. “Ours is the only plan that will invest now in what Torontonians and what all Canadians need — transit and affordable housing,” he said, adding the Liberal plan to raise taxes on the very rich while reducing middleclass taxes would address the trend of growing income inequality. Mr. Trudeau and the Liberals stand for a much needed positive change in government and a renewed hope for our beautiful country! Latest polls show widening Liberal lead confirming the Liberals’ momentum. Middle and lower-income Canadians will be better off under a Trudeau government is the claim of the party. Two crucial battlegrounds, where Liberals believe the election will be won or lost: the Greater Toronto Area and lower mainland British Columbia. The political crooks should not be allowed to continue governing. Surely, Canada needs a change. Many Canadians are of the view that Liberal govt is the way to go, as Justin Trudeau is more than ready for the job. There is a difference between the economic policies being offered by Liberals and Conservatives. That alone shows how middle and lowerincome Canadians will be better off under a Trudeau government. NDP has lost its momentum which is good for Canada as it cannot afford a Socialist government. Under the NDP,

the heavily taxed corporate World goes south of the border. Industries are unionized raising the cost of production leading to endangerment of marketing abroad. The most troublesome with NDP is, money is heavily borrowed to fund the social programs; this adds enormously to the national debt. Obviously, it’s the Liberal wave now. Actually, Canada needs an electoral system based on proportional representation, where every voter is represented in parliament. If neglected, the citizens can form a substantial opposition defending the needs of the people all across Canada. This electoral system if implemented would eliminate strategic voting. But it’s important for every adult citizen to head for polling station on Oct 19 to elect good people for House of Commons. There is a need to drop the partisan cheerleading and think about what is best for Canada. Voters must analyse before they vote: Previous delivery by the contesting candidates must be judged on the basis of true merit and transparency, fairness and equality; this would maintain spirit of democracy. A stronger majority government is in the best interest of Canada. We have to stay united for a much needed positive change.

P. M. of ‘future promises’! This humble request is part of the National appeal to all Muslims eligible to Vote in the coming Federal Elections. We all know that we as Muslims are facing very challenging times not only around the world but also in Canada, our chosen country. Today, I have been requested to make an URGENT APPEAL to all of you who are Canadian citizens and eligible to go out and exercise your democratic right to vote for the candidate of your choice who you believe will stand up for all Canadians alike, including Muslims. Please register everyone above the age of 18 and encourage all members of your family to get out and vote. The advanced voting stations are open from Oct 9th to 12th in your neighborhood. Take advantage of this long weekend and voice your opinion by taking your entire family to vote. We trust and urge you to at least make every effort to vote on October 19th to make it count. every city, e.g. Toronto, Vancouver, etc. Admittedly, some space will be taken up by elevator shafts, vents, helipads, etc., but if only ONE THIRD of all available space was to be dedicated to rooftop gardens, these plants could start converting the Carbon gasses into vital Oxygen on a year round basis. We do not need heavy maintenance plants, only ferns and lichens are good enough. If one city passes a by-law that requires owners of such buildings to institute the measure, then automatically any expenses incurred to meet the bylaw become tax deductible both federally and provincially. So in effect the Federal and Provincial governments help to subsidize the cost. The city must give a reasonable time frame for the owners to comply with the by-law, e.g. 6 or 8 months. As other cities get wind of the initiative and also decide to jump on the bandwagon, more and more amounts of deadly carbon get converted into Oxygen, and sooner. Besides clearing the air, this measure will also create employment as more and more companies will need extra staff to maintain the plants for their clients.

I support Justin Trudeau’s Liberal team because of the following reasons:

By: M Hajee A lot has been said about climate change in the last few years, but nothing has been done about it. We all know the devastating effects of climate change, so something must be done soon. We cannot wait for Federal and Provincial Governments to address the issue, we must do so on a local level. This is what I propose: By: Sikandar Hayat, Surrey Rooftop Gardens: There must be bil- • Justin Trudeau was the FIRST lions of square feet of flat rooftops in leader of any major political party to

visit a mosque. It was not an easy decision at that time, but he has the guts to do what is right. • He believes in Palestinians’ right in having a separate, sovereign state. • 9 out of 10 families will have MORE money in their pocket, according to Trudeau’s comprehensive plan to move Canada forward. • He will amend C-51 and institute a sunset clause to review the Bill C-51 in three years. • Most of the allegations in the pamphlets distributed by his opponents are not true. They are presenting false and deceiving information. • We can trust what Justin says. He is not a typical politician who would tell you what you want to hear. • He does not play politics over issues which might harm us, his countrymen. He puts us ahead of his personal gains. • Justin Trudeau is a genuine, down-to-earth politician. • He does not play fear mongering and/or divide & rule. • He is will stand by and say what is fair for everyone, even if it would cost him losing many voters. So, if you do not want more of

the same then vote for Liberals and bring Real Change in Ottawa. Final voting day will be on Monday October 19th from 7 am till 7 pm. Please visit Elections Canada’s website for more information. Thank you very much.

PTI probing issue of transferred votes from NA-122: Imran Khan Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan congratulated party workers and activists on Wednesday for displaying conviction and passion in the NA-122 by-polls, and said PTI had created a cell to investigate the issue of ‘transferred and missing votes’ from the constituency, whose findings will be presented to a “free and fair election commission.” “For now we will remain tight lipped, but as soon as our probe is complete, we will take action accordingly.” Addressing party workers and activists in Garhi Shahu, Imran slammed the ruling PML-N for what he called were “prepoll intimidatory tactics and rigging.” He said nowhere in the world was an incumbent prime minister allowed to take part in an election campaign. “Sitting ministers – for railways and BISP – were also involved in campaigns in the constituency,” he said.“I am the chairman of a party and I have the right to share my manifesto,” said the PTI chief, in an implicit remark after a court order had earlier banned him from campaigning in the by-poll. Imran Khan also challenged PML-N’s claim that no rigging had taken place in the 2013 election, labeling Ayaz Sadiq’s victory as vindication.“By that logic, Shaoib Siddiqui’s victory in the PP-147 by-poll means there was rigging in the 2013 election,” said the PTI chief. Imran Khan also congratulated Aleem Khan, his party’s candidate from NA-122, for giving PML-N a run for its money.“Just imagine, the party chairman (Imran Khan)

lost in 2013 with a margin of 8,500 votes but Aleem Khan loses barely by 2,500 votes. Does this mean Aleem Khan has more votes than Imran Khan?” “It means the 2013 polls were massively rigged,” claimed the PTI chairman. The PTI chief was flanked by Aleem Khan, Jahangir Tareen and other senior party members during the address. Earlier in the day, addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said there was “no question of pre-poll rigging” in the recently held by-elections in Lahore, Radio Pakistan reported. Nisar urged Imran Khan and the PTI to accept election results with an open heart and to stay away from “creating tension,” keeping national interests in mind. “Imran Khan is levelling baseless allegations about registration and transfer of voters from NA-122 Lahore,” said the minister, advising the PTI chief to refrain from bringing disrepute to national institutions. Nisar said a vote is transferred from one constituency to another only through an application in which the voter is required to attach a copy of his identity card. Source: DAWN.COM

Iran parliament passes bill Liberals jump out to 6 point lead ahead of Conservatives in latest Ipsos poll approving nuclear deal

Iran’s parliament has passed a bill supporting a nuclear deal with world powers, amounting to a victory for the government over conservative opponents of the agreement and clearing the way for it to be implemented. Many legislators strongly opposed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that President Hassan Rouhani’s government reached with world powers on July 14, and Tuesday’s vote removes an obstacle to putting the agreement into practice. “Members of parliament made a well-considered decision today showing they have a good understanding of the country’s situation,” Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, government spokesman, said in a televised news conference after the vote. The bill was passed with 161 votes for, 59 against and 13 abstentions, state news agency IRNA said. It had passed a preliminary vote on Sunday by a smaller margin, and will now be submitted to a clerical body for final approval and passage into law. The bill stipulates that inspectors from the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, need approval from a top Iranian security body before visiting military sites, leaving the possibility that disagreements

could still arise. Western diplomats said last month that IAEA inspectors, who are tasked with verifying member states are not developing nuclear weapons, will have access to military sites where Iranian technicians are taking swipe samples. The bill also says Iran should resume its nuclear activities, which it is curbing under the JCPOA, if international sanctions are not lifted as agreed.Under the July 14 deal with the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China, Iran accepted strict limitations on its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from the sanctions that have crippled its economy. The agreement opened the door to easing decades of mounting hostility between Iran and the West. Western powers suspect the programme was aimed at developing the means to build an atom bomb, but Iran says it seeks only peaceful atomic energy. “According to the supreme leader’s religious decree, no government in Iran has the right to produce or use nuclear weapons and the government must actively follow international disarmament policy,” the parliamentary bill said, referring to Iran’s top authority Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The draft law also called on the government to continue developing its military power, suggesting Iran will maintain its active role in Middle Eastern conflicts, where its interests have clashed with those of Western and Gulf Arab powers. On Sunday, Iran tested a new precision-guided ballistic missile, the first such weapon able to reach its regional arch-enemy Israel, defying a UN resolution that bans Iran from developing missiles that could deliver a nuclear warhead. Afghan forces come under Taliban claim to pull out from Kunduz city

The Afghan Taliban have claimed withdrawal from the centre of the northern city of Kunduz after weeks of intense fighting against the Afghan troops back by US airstrikes in the city. Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, told Al Jazeera that they have withdrawn from the city to

protect civilians. “We left Kunduz so the fight can stop and the civilians can get back to their normal life,” Mujahid said. “Our enemies (foreign forces) have destroyed markets, commercial buildings and hospitals in the fight and we saw people dying and suffering due to those attacks.” However, the Taliban assure that they are able to seize the city again if they want. “We are leaving for the sake of those civilians. However, we can come back and

With less than a week to go, the federal election campaign is heading into the home stretch and the Liberals are now six points ahead of the Conservatives, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted for Global News. “At the national level the Liberals have surged ahead to 37 per cent, the Conservatives have remained steady at about 31 per cent. But where the big change has happened is with the NDP,” whose support continues to drop, said Ipsos senior vice-president John Wright. The Liberals were the only party trending upwards according to the latest numbers, and Trudeau received 37 per cent of the decided vote, up five points from last week. The Conservative party would receive 31 per cent of the vote (down two points) if an election were held today, while Tom Mulcair and the NDP continue their downward slide and would receive 24 per cent of the vote (down two points), according to the poll. Gilles Duceppe and the Bloc Quebecois continue to hold at five per cent while the Green Party receives just two per cent support. The breakthrough for the Liberals came from their support in Ontario where they have a commanding lead over their rivals with 43 per cent support. The Conservatives are second with 30 per cent, the NDP third with 23 per cent and the Green’s fourth with four per cent. “The Liberals have gained ground taking it away from the NDP no question about that, but the motivation has been to defeat Stephen Harper,” Wright said. “You are getting more people recognizing that with Trudeau’s momentum that’s better to join them than to stay with the NDP.” The Grits have made significant gains in the “905” region surrounding Toronto, where they have 48 per cent support – 12 points more than than the Conservatives with 36 per cent. The NDP trails with 14 per cent support. The latest seat projections from the Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy (LISPOP) also see the Liberals forming government with 128 seats. The Conservatives seize the city whenever we want,” Mujahid told Al Jazeera. According to Kunduz police spokesperson, Sayed Sarwar Hussain, all fighters had been cleared from the city and life was returning back to normal. “Last night electricity and water supply has been restored in the city and most of the markets in the city have reopened,” Hussain told Al Jazeera. “Civilians who’ve fled the city are heading back to Kunduz now.” Kunduz residents are however still mourning over the loss of their loved ones and the destruction of their homes due to the conflict. “We are still worried. We don’t know when will it all start again!” said Hekmat dad, a 34-yearold Kunduz resident. “The conflict is still not over yet.” Meanwhile, Taliban have attempted to storm the outskirts of the south-

would get 122 and the NDP trailing with 84 seats. The NDP – once the frontrunners in the campaign – have continued to see a drop in their support in key battlegrounds like Quebec over their stance on issues like the niqab and voters moving to the Bloc. “The NDP had held Quebec with their base going into this election campaign and it has just crumbled,” said Wright. “Right now we have four parties that are basically tied in Quebec.” The battle for Quebec is a four-way race with the Liberals enjoying a small lead with 29 per cent over the Conservatives with 26 per cent, the NDP at 24 per cent and the Bloc at 20 per cent. Wright said one irony of this election has been the approval ratings for the government have been relatively strong at 43 per cent. “It doesn’t make sense. You usually have people less likely to approve your government if in fact they are going to vote against you,” he said. “There may be a wild card in here where people are having a tough time deciding whether they are going to cast their vote for Mr. Trudeau or Mr. Harper.” Elsewhere across the country, voter tallies show that many seats are still up for grabs. In Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the Tories have a slim lead with 39 per cent over the Grits at 36 per cent, NDP with 23 per cent and Green Party at two per cent. The battle for British Columbia has the Liberals in the lead with 37 per cent over the NDP at 30 per cent. The Tories are at 29 per cent and vying for second position. The Green Party is well behind at three per cent. The Conservatives have a sizeable lead in Alberta with 50 per cent – 20 points more than the Liberals at 30 per cent. The NDP has 19 per cent support and the Green Party has one per cent, according to the poll. The Liberals continue to be the dominant party in Atlantic Canada with 50 per cent – well ahead of the NDP at 26 per cent, Conservatives at 22 per cent and Green Party two per cent. killed in two attacks in Jerusalem, increasing the number of Israelis killed since the upsurge in violence that began at the start of the month, to seven. “The feeling is becoming increasingly prevalent that no place is safe,” Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna, reporting from West Jerusalem, said. The spell of violence has been stirred by Palestinian anger over increasing Jewish visits to al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. The unrest began last month with clashes at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site and quickly spread across Israel and into the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The stabbing attacks have stoked concern of a new Palestinian uprising and though Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel’s Netanyahu have appealed for calm, the violence

shows no signs of abating. Frustration has boiled over into violence as Israel continues to build Jewish-only settlements throughout the West Bank in defiance of international law. At least 1,990 Palestinians have been injured, according to the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry, and rights groups have accused Israeli forces of using excessive force. United States Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday that he will travel to the Middle East “soon” to try and move the situation “away from this precipice”. Kerry said the US’ goal for the region, the twostate solution “could conceivably be stolen from everybody” if violence in the region were to spiral out of control. Source: Al-Jazeera

eastern city Ghazni on Tuesday after they were repelled by Afghan forces on Monday. The fighting left the streets of Ghazni largely empty for a second day as many residents fled to the capital city, Kabul. The fall of Kunduz has dealt a major blow to the country’s NATO-trained security forces and highlighted the insurgency’s potential to expand beyond its rural strongholds. As fighting spreads in the neighbouring provinces such as Badakhshan and Takhar, concerns are mounting that the seizure of Kunduz was merely the opening gambit to tighten the insurgency’s grip across northern Afghanistan. The Taliban have claimed that they have taken over 35 of Afghanistan’s 398 districts (in 34 provinces so far). Source: Al-Jazeera

Israel authorises police to blockade Jerusalem suburbs

Israel’s security cabinet has approved a series of new measures designed to combat spiralling Israeli-Palestinian violence after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to take “aggressive steps” to prevent further clashes. “The security cabinet decided several measures to combat terrorism, notably authorising police to seal off or impose a curfew on parts of Jerusalem in case of friction or incitement to violence,” the security cabinet said in a statement released early on Wednesday morning. Other measures include deploying Israeli security forces throughout Jerusalem’s public transport network, using military units to reinforce Israeli police force and “demolishing terrorists’ homes” and revoking their permanent residency. Violent clashes have increased in

frequency since Israeli security forces began to crackdown on Palestinian worshippers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem last month. Netanyahu said on Tuesday night that “anyone who raises his hand to harm us - will pay dearly. And we will not hesitate to use all means at our disposal to restore peace to the cities of Israel”. The security cabinet’s new measures came after another day of violence on Tuesday. A Palestinian was killed in clashes with Israeli security forces in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, the latest such incident in nearly two weeks of violence. Tuesday’s death of Moataz Zawahra, 28, from a Bethlehem refugee camp, takes to 30 the number of Palestinians killed, Palestinian sources said. Earlier on Tuesday, three Israelis were

Political turmoil grips Iraqi Kurdistan Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region is rapidly descending into political turmoil as the leading political party has resorted to extraordinary measures to expel its major partner from the coalition government. The bitter political score-settling - coupled with violent popular protests raging in some cities over the past few days - threatens the stability of the Kurdish region amid an ongoing war against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The Gorran (Change) Movement, the second largest party in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), says its parliament speaker and several parliamentarians were prevented from entering the Kurdish capital, Erbil, on Monday. The checkpoint was manned by security forces affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). The KDP is the largest bloc within the KRG and is led by Massoud Barzani, who has held onto the region’s presidency, even though his rivals, including Gorran, claim his term ended on August 19. At a press conference in Sulaimania shortly after he was turned away from Erbil, Yousef Mohammed Sadiq, speaker of the Kurdish parliament, said: “This is an occupation of Erbil ... and an attempt to launch a coup d’etat against the main source of legitimacy in Kurdistan, which is the parliament. But we, as the parliament, will not accept a coup.” He added: “But this will not succeed ... MPs have obtained their legitimacy from people, and it can only be taken away by people, not by occupying the capital … The Kurdistan region is moving towards a cliff, towards a much worse situation.” He also called for “dialogue” and “more understanding and not deepening crisis”. On Sunday evening, Gorran issued a statement saying its parliament speaker and five ministers in the KRG had been told not to return to their offices Monday, and even to leave Erbil altogether. The fallout between the KDP and Gorran follows a series of protests in Sulaimania province and its adjacent areas since last week that witnessed violent attacks on KDP offices. At least four people were reported dead and dozens injured as a result of clashes between the armed guards of KDP offices and protesters. One of those killed was a KDP member. Barzani’s party reacted furiously to the attacks on its offices, accusing Gorran of masterminding the assaults, a charge that Gorran has denied. On Saturday, security forces in Erbil and Duhok cities, controlled by the KDP, detained and expelled journalists working at the KNN and NRT television channels, dropping them off at a checkpoint outside Erbil. KNN is owned by Gorran, while NRT is a private station. KDP accused the channels of inciting the public against it. The protests were triggered by the KRG’s inability to pay its civil servants for the past three months as it is mired in a financial crisis caused by disputes with the Iraqi central government and plummeting oil prices in international markets. The KRG now sells its oil independently but has failed to explain to the public why it has not been able to pay those on its payroll. Ahmed Kani, a senior official in the KDP, says Gorran’s operatives were instrumental in orchestrating the attacks

on nine KDP offices, adding that they will present such evidence to the public. “As the main winner [in the last Kurdish parliamentary elections], the KDP has the right to expel the party that did not abide by the deal [to form the coalition government],” Kani, who heads KDP’s Kurdish and Iraqi relations bureau, told Al Jazeera. “Gorran ministers were not up to their governance tasks and opposed the government.” Earlier, Ari Harsin, a KDP parliamentarian, told the Kurdish Rudaw network that preventing Sadiq from entering Erbil was a measure to protect him. “Given what has happened to our members in the Sulaimania area, their relatives here have been angered. I suspect some might want to take revenge [against Sadiq] because they consider him to be one of those with major responsibility for the [violent] incidents,” Harsin said. Relations between Gorran and KDP deteriorated after Gorran and Speaker Sadiq played a major role in failed attempts to amend the presidential law to limit the powers of Barzani and set clear term limits for him. As the leading party in the KRG, the KDP - led by Barzani - is expected to reshuffle the cabinet excluding Gorran. However, it is not yet clear whether other parties will remain in the broad-based government. But the KDP is likely to seek the assistance of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), with which KDP maintains lukewarm relations. The territory of Iraqi Kurdistan is almost equally split between the PUK and KDP, each of which has its own armed wing - a legacy of the struggle against the Iraqi government in the past. The KDP and PUK fought a civil war in the 1990s and split the Kurdish region into two separate zones and administrations. Many are concerned that the current incidents might be a prelude to a return to those days. A statement from eight parliamentary blocs including Gorran and PUK, as an attack on the “legitimacy of parliament”, condemning any moves that might “lead to the fragmentation of the Kurdish house”. With ISIL next door, many Kurds are worried about the consequences of these internal disputes on the region’s stability. “Looking at Kurdish history from 1960 up to today: In every episode of conflict, things deteriorated very quickly, and it took a long time to rebuild. There is a serious fear that things will deteriorate, and if that happens, it will be in the benefit of ISIL,” Hiwa Osman, a Kurdish affairs analyst, told Al Jazeera. “This time around, a lot is at stake - not just for Kurdistan, but for the world and the wider region too. Kurds are providing the ground and the troops for the most effective fight against ISIL.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Advance polls see more than 70-per-cent increase in voter turnout Canadians stampeded to advance polls over the long weekend, exceeding turnout in the past election’s early voting window by 71 per cent. In total, some 3.6 million people cast ballots between Friday and Monday, according to Elections Canada – a four-day spread that was a day longer than the advance polling period in 2011. Still, the turnout surge is being hailed by observers as a promising sign of interest in this federal campaign, despite a decades-long trend toward voter apathy. “It’s a great story,” said Peter Loewen, associate professor of political science at the University of Toronto. “Overall, it’s a big increase.” Elections Canada estimated that 850,000 people voted on Friday; 780,000 on Saturday; 767,000 on Sunday; and a full 1.2 million people on Monday. Mr. Loewen said the spike in voting was likely driven by relatively good weather, the extra day of the long weekend and political passions flaring as families assembled for Thanksgiving. The parties were also likely trying to drive partisans to the polls, so they could focus on winning over potential supporters in the campaign’s home

stretch, Mr. Loewen said. This election is also unusually competitive, with three parties making a serious push to form government, though polls have shown the NDP in free fall since late September. The three-way race, coupled with the extraordinary length of this year’s campaign – at 78 days, the longest in modern Canadian history – may have contributed to the eagerness of early voters. Still, Mr. Loewen cautioned against expecting a breakthrough in voter turnout on Oct. 19. For one thing, he noted, advance voters would likely have voted on election day anyway. And historically in Canada, competitiveness doesn’t have much impact on overall turnout. Voter participation has been declining since the early 1990s, reaching a low point of 58.8 per cent in 2008, before rebounding slightly to 61.1 per cent in 2011. Mr. Loewen said this year’s election was unlikely to witness a return to the glory days of more than 70-per-cent turnout. “I think it may be high 60s if we’re lucky,” he said, before adding, “that’s the kind of thing that political scientists say and then they’re wrong. Where have all the voter registrations gone? Stories abound about people who discover they are no longer registered to vote By:Pete Mcmartin, Vancouver Sun If a voter intends to register at a poll there is a Voter information service tool on the home page where voters can find their polling location for either the Advance polling days or Election Day,’ says Elections Canada. Photograph by: Tim Fraser , Tim Fraser Delaney Ryan is a 23-year-old anthropology student at Simon Fraser University. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she voted in both the last provincial and federal elections. She meets all the criteria for voter registration, having her driver’s licence and maintaining the same address since voting in those elections. She can’t understand why, then, this time, she wasn’t registered on the voters list. “I had heard rumours about people not being registered, and a friend’s Facebook page had postings on it of other people finding out they were suddenly no longer registered. A lot of these people seemed to be in the same demographic as me. So I went online (to the Elections Canada website) and checked, and I wasn’t on it, either. “So I had to reapply for registration. “By the sounds of it, it’s been happening to quite a few other people.” Megan Otton, an English instructor at Langara College, had seen the same complaints on Facebook. “I had heard rumours, lots of rumours, and I asked my students of they would check to see if they had been registered because I wanted them to vote, and several of them came back to me to say they hadn’t been.” Since some students move between elections, the fact they weren’t registered could have been due to a change of address. But Otton was surprised to find that her own daughter, Elizabeth, also had been de-registered despite having a longtime permanent address and having voted in previous elections. When her daughter tried to re-register, however, it proved to be an ordeal, Otton said. “It was very difficult for her to re-register,” Otton said. “She doesn’t have a driver’s licence and her passport expired. When she went online to the Elections Canada site, she was refused because it said she needed a driver’s licence. “So I got her a B.C. provincial identification card, instead, thinking that would be enough. She went back online and she was still refused because, again, it said she needed a driver’s licence. She was ready to give up at that time, but I begged her to try again and on the fourth or fifth try it worked. “It’s very odd and it’s never happened before. And I’ve never actually urged my students into voting before, but this is a different kind of election and their educations could be at stake.” There have been other stories across Canada about registration problems. Several Maritime

residents complained to the CBC that they discovered they were not registered when they visited the Elections Canada website, despite the fact they had voted in multiple elections. An Elections Canada spokesman said then that the agency was aware of problems some Canadians may have confirming their registration on the agency’s new website, but these cases were “very isolated” and confined to rural areas. Once the story aired, however, the CBC received more calls from voters who said they discovered they were not registered, either. The CBC also reported a case of a Montreal woman who found she had not been registered even though she had been at the same address for 12 years. After phoning Elections Canada, an employee there found her registered to an old address in Ontario. Asked about cases of established voters being de-registered here, Elections Canada spokeswoman Dorothy Sitek replied in an email: “Approximately 14 per cent of elector information changes every year — those turning 18 and new Canadian citizens are added to the Register, the names of deceased electors are removed, and electors who move have their address updated. “The most important thing is to ensure you are registered to vote. There are numerous options to register or to update your registration information.” But what would explain the de-registration of established urban voters like Delaney Ryan, Elizabeth Otton and others in Metro Vancouver who have posted their complaints on Facebook? A glitch in the Elections Canada program? Faulty data gathering? Sitek did not say. But if voters do wish to see if they are registered, she replied, they can go online to the elections.ca website and follow the prompts. The site also offers an online registration service (the one Elizabeth Otton had so much trouble with). If done on or before Oct. 13, she wrote, the voter will still receive in the mail a Voter Information Card that provides polling site information. “Voters can also register at their Advance Polling location or on Election Day. One can register right through and during Election Day. There is also a toll-free national number to call for more information or with questions: 1-800463-6868. “If a voter intends to register at a poll there is a Voter information service tool on the home page where voters can find their polling location for either the Advance polling days or Election Day.” This is an important election, and promises to be a close one. I would advise you to check to see if you’re registered, even if you have received a voter information card. If you are not registered, I would very much like to hear from you. I can be reached at the email address below.

Miracle Special: Every Single Vote Matters

“One man. one vote” is the most fairest method to choose leaders in any democratic society. Voting is patriotic right to choose your representative government. A citizen’s vote is a secret ballot. Voting is the most important exercise a citizen will do as a responsible citizen of a democratic nation. In a functioning democracy, being able to vote allows citizens to express their political opinions by voting a particular policy or candidate that has your best interest in mind. By this, you can decide your very own future by opting a candidate who might speculate your own aspects and possibly those people who share the same opinion with you. Voting is a right of all eligible voters in any country. It is seen as the normal or typical form of political activity and it remains the primary means of political participation. The goal of any voting system is to establish the intent of each individual voter and translate those intents into a final tally or reality. According to Abraham Lincoln; “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent” This further explains that in a truly democratic society, governments are instituted among qualified and responsible men who derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. Another ex-American president, Lyndon Johnson have this to say in support of Abraham Lincoln that “The right to vote is the most basic right, without which all others are meaningless”. Voting is the first duty of democracy. Government is based on citizens votes for representation. In a democracy, your vote is your voice and the act of standing up for what you believe. Voting helps to preserve our way of life. The Federal Election October 19, 2015 Nonetheless, it is of the essence for every voter

to cast his/her vote, for every single vote matters in the elections. So far as the local Muslim populace is concerned, it is of crucial importance for it to go to the designated polling stations of their respective areas to exercise it’s hard-earned right of franchise that has been bestowed upon the people being the citizens of the country of its adoption. Every vote matters in the democratic set up of the sitting Member of Parliament, where the people are its real architects. This is the precise reason that the Miracle newspaper is strenuously creating awareness in the Islamic community for its positive and energetic participation in the electoral process, may that be satarted from city level. It is, h o w e v e r, regretted to point out that despite the repeated wake up calls the local Muslim Ummah does not deem appropriate to pay heed to the wake up alarms and let the opportunity of sending more of its representatives in the parliament slip out of its hands. Consequently, the representation of this community at all the levels of governance is devastatingly much below its proportion. This is appallingly dismaying picture in comparison to the other ethnic communities around. Everone has seen that in this election 2015 more than 40 Punjabi community members are participating and specially in Surrey two ridding all 3 candidates from major parties are opponents. . Now when the time for getting something substantial has practically run out owing to

the fault of none other than the community itself, it is futile to cry over the spilt milk. All the Muslim votes in their respective areas and bringing the voters out of their homes for casting their votes at the polling boots. Putting together of every solitary vote matters for winning the elections in the same way as the little drops of water are required to contribute their might to make an ocean. The youth volunteers of both the sexes can accomplish this productive job conveniently and effectively. Besides, it is equally imperative for all the organizations of the community operating in this area to formulate some tangible plan and educate the people for future on this issue of crucial importance, as the cycle for the federal elections at different levels continues to roll ahead on the footing of four years term under the law.

If You Don’t Vote, then DON’T Complaint

For every one that complains that they don’t like how the Parliament is running things now and for every one that thinks the MP is on the right track, today is your day — Election Day. Nobody in this world has the right to complain about how our parliamentarians are working, and how our representatives are voting against any public issue at national and international levels, is unless he or she has voted. Voting for our representatives is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we do have the power to change how national works through our vote.

Voting takes very little time, and if you did not vote for a candidate you should not complain, because you did not even take the time to vote for those people who make the decisions. However, the sad fact of this world is that most people do not vote. They do not think it is worth the time; they don’t think their one vote will matter, and they think that there is nothing that can be done to fix the way politics are now. Those people are wrong. While change is never easy or fast it can be done, and voters have proven they can speak with one very loud voice. The only thing someone can do that is worse than not voting is voting blindly. Voters need to make sure they are sending someone into office they think can do the best job. Read the newspaper today, and get a grasp on the people running for member of parliament , and then go into the voting booth. Better yet, take a minute right now to contemplate what issues are the most important to you, your family at nationl levels and then take a look at what the candidates believe in. If you don’t know what you believe in, don’t complain when someone does it for you. In short, go vote. These are the people that represent you in parliament and make decisions that directly affect your public life like Canada wide infrastructure, Education, Tution Fee, Immigration matters, Housing, Police Crime Control cells , your religious rights, your national and international related matters, environmental issues seniors, youth and women issues, Canada alliance with NATO, Bill C51, 24, 518 and other national issues in your daily life Do the job right, and make sure they are representatives you believe in.

Participation in the Democratic Election An Islamic Perspective.

By: Mohammad Shujaath Ali Nadwi Canada once again is about to undergo the process of federal election. This election is very important to Canadians from various points of view. The economic downturn has dropped the Canadian dollar value very low in the international market and as a result the Canadian economy has suffered grossly, raising the cost of living which has crippled many families economically. The recent change in some foreign policies as well as passing of new bills have shaken the multiculturalism of the country. These and other issues have simply added more importance to this election. Canadians are also witnessing one of the longest election campaigns in the country’s history since 1872 which would last for 11 weeks. Election campaigns are at its peak. The candidates are promoting their parties, presenting their manifesto and promising Canadians a better future. This is why some speculators predict this federal election to be a turning point in Canadian history. Huffington Post, in their September edition, revealed that historically Muslim Canadian voter turnout has been significantly lower than the national average and lower than other faithbased communities. The current compelling conditions however require Muslims to participate in the election earnestly and to understand the Islamic position on voting in the democratic land. Islam encourages Muslims as the loyal citizens to participate actively in the civic affairs of society. Expounding this point, Dr Muzammil Siddiqi, the former president of the Islamic Society of North America, says: “Just as we are responsible for our families, our businesses, our mosques; we are also responsible for our neighborhoods, cities and countries where we live. Whether we are citizens, permanent or even temporary residents, it is our duty to see that wherever we live, we contribute to the goodness and well being of that society. It is unjust and unethical from the Islamic point of view to live in some place, earn money, enjoy

the food and comfort and not contribute anything good to that place. We should not only participate by giving tax, because we have to give them anyway; we should participate as a matter of our honor and goodness. We must participate to make the society peaceful, just, caring, safe, secure and prosperousâ€? (See article: Participation in the Society and Voting for Muslims in North America). Part of Muslims’ participation in civic affairs is voting at the time of election. Though we live in a democratic country, democracy is not an Islamic form of government. It is a man made system which functions on the principle “rule by the people, for the peopleâ€?; whereas in Islam sovereignty belongs to Allah alone. In the modern secular world though, democracy has proven to be the best form of government for the people where people can pressurize the government to abrogate a law that does not serve the best interest of citizens. Muslim jurists have stated that when the choice is between two good things, then take the better of the two; but if the choice is between two evils, then take the lesser of the two evilsâ€? (page 261.‍) ﺭﺉďş?ďť…ďť?ďş?ďť ďş?ďş?ďşľďşƒďť?ďş?‏. In light of this juristic principle, Muslims living in secular lands are left with the only option to participate in the current democratic system which is better in many ways than all other forms of existing non-Islamic governments in the world today. This system, though distant from the Islamic concept of government still has certain principles that are Islamic in nature, such as citizens bringing to power whom they wish. To avoid voting can alienate Muslims in a country and can cast them out of the decision making process. Someone has rightly said: “Your vote is your voice and your silence is your choice to give up your rightâ€? Voting in Islam is of three dimensions: 1. Trust 2. Testimony 3. Recommendation. When we cast our vote for a candidate it means we testify that he or she is the most suitable person for the position they are seeking hence we recommend them for the position, and this right of voting

has been granted to us under the trust that we will cast our ballet to the right candidate. The following evidences from the Quran and Hadith point to these three dimensions. The Quran says: 1. ‘O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah , even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.’ (An Nisa/135) 2. ‘And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah Knows what you do.’ (Baqarah/284) 3. ‘Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a reward therefrom; and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a burden therefrom. And Allah is over all things, a Keeper.’ (An Nisa/85) 4.Prophet Mohammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘He who conceals the testimony when he was called for it, would earn the sin of witnessing the lie.’ (related in M’ujamul Awsat) 5. He, may Allah bless him and grant him peace also said: “The advisor must be trustworthy. When he is asked for advise, he should advise what he would choose for himself.’ (related in M’ujamul Awsat) The above citations make it very clear that to vote for the right candidate is our moral, social and religious responsibility and to misuse it is a grave sin because it is seen as a lie, false testimony and the breach of trust which ultimately results in electing the wrong person to rule the nation. As far as choosing the right candidate to cast the ballet is concerned, we find two guiding verses of the Quran. Allah says narrating the story of Yusuf and Mosa, peace be upon them 1. [Joseph] said, “Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian.(Yusuf/55) 2. One of the women said, “O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy.( Qasas/26) Shaikh Khalid Saifullah Rahmani commented on these verses as follows:

“The candidate that runs for election apparently claims that he is trustworthy and the most suitable for the position he seeks. The voter therefore must see the following in him or her: 1. Education 2. Competency 3. Who is sincere in securing the interest of minorities 4. Who wishes good for all the citizens. This is not possible unless he/she is wise, selfless and aware of the needs of the nationâ€? (see for further details Islam and the contemporary issues, page 331) In summary, Muslim scholars in the West have urged Muslims to adhere to the following points with respect to voting for the candidate. 1. Voting is very important. It is a means of electing the person most beneficial for the community and our country. Voting is a big responsibility. Not voting or voting incorrectly will bring power to the wrong person. 2. Muslims should read every party’s manifesto to find out which party offers us the best in all spheres of life; education, housing, health, social issues, international policy etc. 3. The objective clearly must be to bring benefit to the Canadian society in general and to Muslims in particular. 4. Muslims can be flexible in the matters of details without compromising on the ethical and humanitarian principles of Islam. 5. The vote should not be based on personal interest but communal welfare. 6. The candidates should be well qualified and be qualified for the position they are seeking . 7. The candidate should not be known for deception, corruption or animosity to Islam and Muslims. Finally, we should pray to Allah asking him to enable us to make the right choice and that He grant success to those who will serve the country and its citizens without any prejudice or wrong as well as to those who would play an active role in bringing a torn humanity together by promoting peace, acceptance and understanding among the nations of the world. ‍ďş?‏ ‍ﺯﺯďş? ďť?ďť?ďş? ďť? ďť™ďť?ďş?ﺍ‏

Mulcair twists his position again i – this time on marijuana legalization

Thomas Mulcair continues to say different things to different audiences. It is clear that Thomas Mulcair’s experience has taught him to play politics with everything. Mulcair’s positions on marijuana : 1.When running for the leadership, Tom Clark directly asked whether Mulcair supports decriminalizing marijuana, and his answer? 1“No. I think that would be a mistake because the information that we have right now is that the marijuana that’s on the market is extremely potent and can actually cause mental illness.” (Thomas Mulcair, March 19, 2012) 2.At the beginning of the campaign: “The NDP’s position is decriminalization.”

(Thomas Mulcair, August 21, 2015) 3.Yesterday when pressed by VICE News on his opposition to legalization, Mulcair changed his mind: “It’s going to get done. I mean that is the direction that it is going in. Look at Oregon. Look at Colorado… We are on a track to full legalization.” (Thomas Mulcair, October 13, 2015) Thomas Mulcair has once again demonstrated that he will say anything. He continues to twist himself into knots in order to appeal to any audience. This isn’t the first time: Mulcair has also taken multiple and contradictory positions on the oil sands, the gun registry, bulk water exports, and more.

cheaper prescriptions, cleaner environment In British Columbia, it’s a two way race between New Democrats and Conservatives and it’s the NDP that has the plan to bring real change to Ottawa, said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. The NDP’s plan expands access to health care for millions of Canadians, defends and creates good jobs, delivers strong action on climate change and is the change Canadians are waiting for. “There’s just one week to go and British Columbians, like all Canadians, know it’s the NDP that stands for what really matters; better health care, good paying jobs, protecting the environment and opportunity for young people,” said Mulcair. “Stephen Harper has created a Canada that is more closed, war-like, and is seen as a polluter on the world stage, all while ignoring concerns for health care and the environment. He has the wrong priorities.”

crowd to focus on his plan that helps middle-class families get ahead. Mulcair also sharply criticized Stephen Harper’s secretive TPP deal and Justin Trudeau for not being upfront about his views. “This secretive Conservative trade deal drives down wages, makes life-saving drugs more expensive and will harm thousands of Canadian families. Why Justin Trudeau is standing with Stephen Harper on this, as he did with C-51, is unbelievable,” said Mulcair. “The NDP has a great plan to lower drug costs, but Stephen Harper’s signature on the TPP would mean drug costs would actually go up for Canadians, especially seniors. We’re going to fight against this deal.” British Columbia is ready for change and with just 35 more New Democrat MPs across Canada, the NDP will defeat Stephen Harper and make this election the last unfair election in Canadian history.

6th Election Article

The debate of 3rd October, organized by the Muslim Media under the patronage of the Miracle Media group, Community Times Canada and the Canada Times was an amazing gathering of the Muslim community who patiently listened to the candidates from all the parties contesting in the coming Federal Election. Before the debate, I was told by one of the organizers that all the candidates of the Conservative party have withdrawn from attending the debate, probably, on the instructions of the Head Office of the Conservative Party. My response was, if it were true, and if Mr. Harpreet Singh abstained due to the party line then he would lose my support. To the certainty of my belief in him, not only that he showed up as the only candidate of the Conservative party, but also that he boldly, smilingly and with reason responded to every question that was posed from the floor. I stayed late after the end of the program and had a chance to speak with many members of the community. There wasn’t a single person who rated Harpreet as less than number one, with the observation that ‘Harpreet has chosen the wrong party.’- a miserable reaction of the slavery thought. It reminded me of an interesting experience from Pakistan:

Vo t e H A R P R E E TRespond to the Intellect

am a man of an ideology.’ A capable person of extreme integrity is preferred over the smaller. This is the slavery of thought- People asking for liberty and freedoms have become slave of the reasonless thoughts. Many supporting their candidate against Harpreet agreed that the performance of their candidate was an open display of arrogance and

Wow- Fantastic debate on Oct 3 The BC Muslim media group, organizing the debate, was created by the joint efforts of Mr. Naaseer Pirzada, Mr. Haris Hafeez Khan and Mr. Sana ullah Chaaudhry. Enthusiasm and the questions posed by the community to the contestants clearly revealed the maturity of the Muslim community participating in the political system of Canada. I am hopeful that the next level of progress would see many Muslim candidates contesting election from all the parties. Managing and coordinating efforts of Mr. Naseer Pirzada about the program need to be appreciated. He passionately and evenly handled the show by clarifying the rules and regulations to all the candidates. His control was evident from the beginning as the program started with a capacity full hall just five minutes after the scheduled time earlier While travelling in a Taxi in Islamabad few years ago, I was engaged d in i a political li i l conversation with the driver. He happened to be a loyalist of the People’s Party of Pakistan, but was furious over the performance of his leaders and literally abused them with filth. ‘So you are not going to vote for them in the coming elections’- I questioned. I could only smile at his response when he said, ‘I will never vote against the party because I

revealed to me. Pirzada was fantastic on the mike and did not spare or gave liberty to one over the other candidate. He throughout maintained a neutral stance for all the candidates that served the key to the success of this great debate. Delicious Afghan food was served. It was a decent approach to serve the ladies, the children and the seniors before the others. I am sure these candidates have noticed the importance of a different mature and powerful Muslim community. There is a bright future for our children and the children of their children. Keep it up the Miracle team and the Muslim Media Group. I am pleased to take pride in the success of The Miracle achieved under the energetic leadership of Mr. Naseer Pirzada.

ignorance. Yet, some thought of voting in ignorance Yet favor of the party. How can one plead for freedom when his own thoughts are shackled? It is always the man behind the gun that matters. Party, just like the gun is a material thing; it is the men and women that change the course of history. Now is the time to go and vote with reason. I can only plead and request to VOTE FOR HARPREET be-

cause of his capabilities; integrity, honesty, thought and intellect. Do not live a life of fear. Take active part and be the guardian of the system rather considering you a victim. People would come to scare you of the laws in order to take your sympathy and the vote. Don’t be fooled by this rhetoric. Keep your priorities clear; is it i the so called freedom or the security of your country and children that is more imy portant? None of the law names the word p M Muslim. It is you who is fooled to believe that every law here is against the Muslims. I was surprised to see a leader of our community asking the candidates about what to tell his community regarding these laws. My humble suggestion would be to go and induce the strength of faith and the truth in the community. Remember, in order to provide the strength to the community one needs to be brave first. Why should we be scared if we are clean and clear? Islam is a dynamic religion, it tells us to help the weak by protecting him and help the cruel by keeping him away from cruelty. Don’t be afraid and do not paint the face of a victimized community. I am sure the younger generation would replace the old timid thought carried so far. Free your thoughts from the fear of being the victim. It is unfortunate that I do not live in the riding of Harpreet. However, I would frankly admit that I won’t be voting for the Conservative party in my riding as I do not know enough about the candidates here. AFA-LA-TATAFAKKAROON WHY DO YOU NOT THINK

BC Muslim Media holds a Grand Debate

Muslims participate in historical numbers at the all parties Candidates debate

BC Muslim Media is a temporary group of three different and independent Muslim Newspapers, Canada Times, Community Time Canada and The Miracle. This debate program is the first joint venture of this group to facilitate and to bring all political parties and the community together at one stage to face the questions answers and party program to choose the better leadership. BC Muslim Media organized a grand all candidates debate in Afghan Chopan Restaurant. Candidates from all major parties Conservative, Green Party, Liberal and NDP attended the debate. Candidates contesting from five ridings, four from Surrey and one from Delta were invited but the candidates who showed up included Jasbir Sandhu NDP candidate and incumbent MP of Surrey Centre, Jinny Sims NDP candidate and incumbent MP of Surrey NewtonDelta, Garry Begg NDP candidate from Fleetwood-Port Kells, Ken Hardie Liberal candidate from Surrey Fleetwood-Port Kells, Richard Hosein Green Party candidate from Surrey Fleetwood-Port Kells, Randeep Sarai Liberal candidate from Surrey Centre, Harpreet Singh Conservative candidate from NewtonDelta. Harpreet Singh was the only Conservative candidate among four other conservatives who were invited but could not manage to attend and with strong nerves, he faced and

answered the questions related to his party. Sukh Dhaliwal, Liberal party candidate from Newton-Delta was confirmed to attend this debate but could not manage due to the sudden demise of his father. Al Payne, Mr. Dhaliwal’s campaign manager, gave Sukh Dhaliwal’s message and explained the liberal party mandate in two minutes given for introduction. About two hundred people attended this debate and it was the huge show of numbers in BC Muslims’ history. The hall was fully jam-packed whereas few were in other hall. The Program started on time at 6:30pm. Misbah Naseer was the MC for the first round before Maghrib prayer. She invited Maulana AL Naumani the head Imam of Fiji Islamic Centre who recited the Holy Quran followed by the translation of the verses. After that, Mr. Haris Hafeez from Community Times Canada who welcomed the guests, all community members and he also thanked the sponsors of this program. Then, Mr. Sanaulllah Chaudhry from Canada Times highlighted the importance of vote, the strength of the Muslim votes in Canada and he emphasized that each citizen should vote and if they all will vote to their own choice party can bring the real change. After Maghrib prayer the program resumed and Mr. Naseer Pirzada from the Miracle carried this program till the end. Nadeem Zia a prominent pharmacist and Misbah Naseer from the Miracle organized

the questions collected on the floor. The 3rd round of questions from the floor was conducted by Misbah Naseer and carried out beautifully. The format was set by BC Muslim Media at the beginning of the Forum in which each candidate first introduced themselves. Then, the moderator posed questions to all candidates, or party’s spokesperson. The questions had been submitted by people attending the forum. the audience then had the opportunity to pose any question from the floorthat may not have been asked by the moderator. In the final round, each candidate was provided ONE minute to convince the constituent, about Why the Voter should Vote for them. All rounds were timed by young timekeeper Fatima Nadeem. Topics raised included immigration, foreign policy, bill C-51, bill C-24, free tuition fee, Syrian refugees and Niqab issues . This debate continued for more than two and half hours in a friendly and engaging atmosphere. The strict format, well managed and fully controlled program made this debate successful, remarkable and a milestone in the BC debate history. Everyone was provided the all possible opportunities to raise and face, ask and respond the concerns of the community. Personal questions, use of abusive language and body language, hooting, undue clapping were not allowed and

time restrictions were strictly followed. There was no humiliation and no bias that which is why no one walked out from this debate and kept sitting with curiosity till the end. At the end everyone on the floor and the candidates not only appreciated the effort but claimed this debate was unique, successful and nicely carried out and wrapped in time. A delicious dinner with tea was served by Afghan Chopan. The absence of religious groups and Pakistani associations was seriously noticed and questioned by the community considering BC Muslim Media partners invited them individually and collectively. BC Muslim media was unhappy on missing of these groups whereas BC Muslim media had been projecting them, promoting them and providing coverage of their programs free of cost continuously for many years. F A I T H Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 5.172Narrated by Aisha Ashura’ (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance. The Prophet (saws) also used to fast on this day. So when he (saws) migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.

Use of the Lunar Calendar The Islamic Calendar is based on the Lunar Calendar consisting of 354-355 days annually and is 10-11 days shorter than the western Solar Calendar. The Lunar month is based on the time it takes the moon to complete a single orbit around the earth and it is just over 29? days. There are many advantages to the Lunar calendar. For example, the various dates in the Islamic Calendar such as Ramadan and Hajj rotate every year and are not fixed like the Solar Year. People, therefore, will perform acts of worship in various climatic conditions and in different length of hours in submission to the will of Allah where human imagination plays no part. The new moon marks the beginning of each new lunar month and it is easy for people to see the new moon and know that a new month has begun. This probably explains why most ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians, the Jews, the Greeks and the Egyptians in the Middle East , the Aztecs and the Incas of the West, and the Hindus and the Chinese of the East used this system. Interestingly, the English word ‘month’ is derived from the word ‘moon’.

Origin and Significance of the Hijri Calendar

hood, therefore, let it become the Epoch of the Era”. The Hijrah year reminds Muslims every year of the sacrifices made by the first Muslims and should prepare them to do the same. The constant use of the Hijri Calendar for acts of worship and as a frame of reference to major historical events will help Muslims keep links with their roots and further enhance their knowledge of their religion and history.

Months of the Islamic Calendar There are twelve months in the Islamic Calendar as the Qur’an says: “Surely the number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve, in accordance with His decree from the day He created the heavens and the earth, out of which four are sacred” (9:36). These twelve months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi‘ al-Awwal, Rabi‘ alThani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Ukhra, Rajab, Sha‘ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa‘dah and Dhul Hijjah. The four Sacred Months (al-Ashhur al-Hurum) are Rajab, Dhul Qa‘dah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram [Bukhari]. The sanctity of these months was also accepted in the Pre-Islamic era when fighting was forbidden.

The Islamic Calendar was started by the second Caliph Umar (RA) in 16 AH/ 637 CE [Al-Tabari: Tarikh Al- Rusul 5/22 & Ibn Sa‘d: Tabaqat Al- Kubra 3/281]. The event of the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, was chosen to begin the Islamic Calendar because it was the first major sacrifice made by the whole Ummah for the preservation of Islam in its formative period. Ibn Hajar, in his Fath Al-Bari, records that the Caliph Determining Islamic Dates Umar (RA) is reported to have remarked: Islamic dates are determined by the actual “The Hijrah has separated truth from falsevisibility of the moon as the Prophet (SAW)

said: “Fast by seeing it (the moon) and end the fast by seeing it” [Bukhari & Muslim]. Muslim scholars have interpreted this Prophetic saying in two different ways. Some scholars, such as Al- Shafi’i, have held the view that each location has its own sighting of the moon (Ikhtilaf al-Mutali‘) [Sayyid Sabiq: Fiqhus Sunnah 3/112]. But most scholars from the other Schools of Law have taken the words “fast by seeing it” (sumu li ru’yatihi) as a general command to all Muslims and not individual sectors of the community. Hence they regard the sighting of the moon in one region as valid for people of another region, provided the news of sighting the moon reaches them through authentic means [Ibn Taymiyyah: Majmu‘ah Fatawa 5/111].

Muharram\ This is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and one of the four Sacred Months (alAshhur al- Hurum). It is recommended to fast during this month as there is a Hadith which says: “The best fast, after Ramadan, is in the month of Muharram” [Muslim]. This may be an indirect reference to ‘Ashura and not to Muharram in general because, according to Sayyidah Aisha R.A, the Prophet (SAW) fasted most in Sha‘ban after Ramadan [Bukhari & Muslim].

Significance of the Hijrah for Muslims Muharram heralds the beginning of the Islamic Calendar. The Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his Companions (Sahabah) from Makkah to Madinah was much more than a simple migration. It was a turning point in the history of Islam. It was a revolution and complete transformation of society. The Muhajirun (emigrants) of Makkah gave up their family, property and homeland for the sake of religion and the Ansar (helpers) of Madinah welcomed them with great hospitality. Thus a unique brotherhood (mu’akhah) was created between them, hitherto unknown in human history. By highlighting the Hijrah, Muslims will re-affirm their need to be in a state where they can practice their religion and make the necessary sacrifices to achieve that aim, including emigration. Hijrah also has a deep spiritual significance where Muslims commit themselves to leave the state of disbelief (kufr) and sin to enter that of Islam and piety. That is why the Prophet (SAW) said: “The best emigrant (Muhajir) is the one who leaves what Allah has forbidden” [Bukhari] Although the practical usage of the Islamic Calendar is increasingly diminishing, nevertheless the foundation of many acts of worship such as Zakah, Sawm and Hajj revolve around this calendar and it is one of the hallmarks (shi‘ar) of Islam that differentiates Muslims from other communities. Undoubtedly, there is a great need for Muslims to reaffirm their cultural heritage by using the Islamic Calendar on a regular basis and not just during Ramadan and Eid.

Welcome Back to all Hajjaj and Congratulations Miracle Media would like to congratulate all the Hajj groups returning to their homes after recently performing Hajj in1436H. Allah (swt) accept all their Hajj and Duaa.(Ameen)

21 W O M E N Fashion clothing Industry and its Impact on Environment. Muharrum 02, 1437 October 16, 2015

By: Nafisa Siddiqui As soon as my family got the news that I am going to Pakistan, everyone from my family and friends brought their list of the latest designer clothes which they Googled from the Internet. As most of us know about the shopping and tailoring in Pakistan, it is not an easy job. You need to have special skills to do shopping and deal with tailor master who called Master Saheeb in Pakistan. Anyways, after six weeks of hard work I was successfully able to manage everyone’s wish list. After a month was Eid so everyone was looking forward to wearing those dresses. A couple of days before Eid my daughter came with a pile of clothes in her hand. I almost got a heart attack when she asked me if I could help her in alteration. I asked why and she told me politely that this length and style is out of fashion and she needed to alter them to wear at parties. Are you kidding me, I thought! It was shocking to see how quickly fashion news spreads from Karachi to New Delhi and from there to USA, Canada and England. Technology has changed the entire fashion industry. Fashion trends are short lived and one can get excess to the latest trends by a click of a finger.

I think this is the time that frequently changing fashion trends should be taken seriously. We need to take action about these fashion industries that driving consumers crazy and collecting billions from our pockets in the name of fashion. It’s a vicious cycle in which we are being trapped. Our wardrobes are flooded with clothes. If we analyze our wardrobe we see some clothes are bought because it is “in”, some we buy because it was on sale, some are store closing sales and some are comfort buying. Further analysis shows that about twenty percent of these clothes is what we need from this over flowing stock of clothing. This shows how we are wasting our hard earned money to make other people rich by falling in the so called fashion trend. The Fashion industry has now started targeting the individual customer. A London based company is tackling the problem of man and machine so that they can provide services that can curate fashion just for you, to fit your personal parameter. One of these companies is going to provide their customer with a personal shopper for free to find the clothes they love what you need to do is to browse their website. Let’s see the down side of this fashion craze and its effect on environment and on earth: •Finite ground water – fresh water – is used to water 53% of the cotton fields in the world and to produce 73% of global cotton production. •Approximately 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, 3,900 children die daily from water borne illness. •Americans throw out more than 12.37 mil-

lion tons of textile material each year. •Although only 2.4% of the world’s cropland is planted with cotton, it accounts for 24% of the world’s insecticide market and 11% of sale of global pesticides. •It can take more than 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton; equivalent to a single T-shirt and pair of jeans. •73% of global cotton harvest comes from irrigated land. We think that natural cotton is better than synthetic; but that’s not true. Cotton growing uses 25% of the insecticide produced in United States annually, including human carcinogens Workers at each stage of production are at risk of chronic Bronchitis and emphysema from exposure to cotton dust. Natural product like wool often relies on chemicals too. Sheep are dunked in pesticide to kill external parasites, yarn is colored with heavy metal -base –dye where the waste water pollutes streams. The polyester won’t biodegrade and will end up in landfills or will be burned releasing toxics into the land and air. In the U.S. the average person discards 32kg of clothing annually. It’s not only about the money. I think this fashion craze is costing us, the consumer, more than we fashion lovers can imagine. The Agency estimates 85% of these wind-up in landfills or incinerators, and that’s just America. The story around the rest of the world isn’t much different. The world’s resources cannot keep up with our increasing demand for throwaway fashion. We should encourage alternatives available to us like clothing from bamboo , Tencel , hemp

and Linen (flex) all the alternatives and Eco friendly .we can keep balance between available alternative clothing and cotton.

Educating Consumers & Designers We need to educate ourselves not to fall for the continuous marketing of new fashion collection of designers. Designers are effectively filling our wardrobes with their fashion collections. If we look back few years were we are not obsessed with fashion clothing. There was a balance. We used to buy a couple of key items and a couple of “IN” garments and used to juggle around with them. This is what we should be doing today. Buying a couple of key items of quality clothing and re shuffling with new ones every now and then and building a decent wardrobe which doesn’t need monthly changes just because famous fashion designers want you to do that. We can play our part and at least cut down the pollution in our environment up to some extent. We can take ourselves out of the vicious fashion cycle and buy fashion garments sensibly, give our used clothes to organizations which are charity based and really try to provide it to poor people. It will send a clear message to the fashion Industry that we are not falling for the so frequently changing fashion trends.

Background of Muslim Community in Guildford The necessity of establishing a worship Place in Guilford was felt in June 2008, and with the sincere efforts of a few brothers, a place was in Guilford Library to cater for brothers to attend Juma prayers. It was realized that a permanent place was required to have daily prayers establish in the area.Due to increase of members in October 2008 one of the brothers kindly vacated his office situated upstairs at 209-10222 152 Street Surrey and also generously contributed toward the rent. May Allah (SWT) reward him for his generosity. A musallah was established. By the will of ALLAH (SWT) the community kept growing in Guildford. In the month of Ramadhan last year it was realized that we needed to move to a bigger location. As there were many brothers attending tarweeh prayers at the musallah and it was felt that it is becoming hard to accommodate the community in Salaat ul Juma (Friday Prayers) in existing Musallah. A few brothers took an initiative and started search for place with adequate space to accommodate the increasing community.Guildford Islamic Cultural Center (GICC) was formed and registered. The objective of GICC was acquiring a place of worship of our own. After going through many properties around the area we were not able to get what we were looking for. In the meantime there was an urgent need for the Musallah to move, as by earlier this year we were not able to accommodate for brothers coming for Juma. However this property at 101 15290 103A Avenue was up for lease and after Mashwara it was decided to lease the building. The musallah was shifted in March 2014, to new Location at 101-15290 103 A Ave Surrey BC. GICC management has still a task to meet with the regular payment of monthly rent, allied expense and above all renovation cost which is mandatory to make it workable.

Fine Cuisine!

By the grace of Allah (SWT) we have completed our renovations. Many of our brothers generously helped in this course. Since moving from 700 ft² location to 1900 ft² we are now able to accommodate about 250 people. Alhamdulillah now five times daily prayers is observed. This year Tarawih prayers will be observed Insha’Allah. GICC is looking to serve about 250 families living in the vicinity of the Musallah. Now that the renovation is completed the next phase is establishment of a maktab. This will require us to acquire the services of a qualified teacher. Adult education classes are also being considered to be established. There are also plans to have our youth involved in the community. Once the lease expires in 2019 our long term goal is to establish a masjid with a medressa in the area. We request you for your generous support towards achieving our goals. 24 H E A L T H October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Muharrum 02, 1437 October 16, 2015

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. Each year in Canada, October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Canadian females, affecting thousands of women and their families each year. In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it. One in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer - with the risk increasing significantly after the age of 50. One in 28 will die from the disease. Although, since the mid1990s, the incidence of cancer and death has declined, it continues to be a life-threatening issue for thousands of Canadian women. The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) continues to encourage its 340,000 members to take an active part in the fight to end this disease. An estimated 170 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die of it. Breast cancer death rates have declined by 25% since 1986. Incidence and death rates for breast cancer have declined since 1969 in women aged 20-39. Survival has been improving gradually. Today survival ranges between 87% and 89% for women aged 40 and older. For women under 40, survival is 81%, excluding Quebec. What you can do Many women are alive and well today because their breast cancer was detected and treated early. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that women: • Have a mammogram every 2 years if you are between the ages of 50 and 69. If you are between the ages of 40 and 49, discuss your risk of breast cancer and the benefits and risks of mammography with your doctor; • Have a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional at least every two years if you are between 40-69; • If you are 70 or older, talk to your doctor about a screening program for you; • Talk to your doctors about any changes. There is no single cause of breast cancer but there are certain factors that may appear to elevate the risk. These include: • Age – Risk of diagnosis increases as a person ages • Personal history – If a person has previously battled the disease • Family history – Especially if a mother, sister or daughter has encountered breast cancer • Family history of ovarian cancer • Taking hormone replacement therapy for more than five years• Dense breast tissue • Other possible risk factors – Poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and obesity Sometimes, women develop breast cancer without any of these risk factors. A lot of women affected by breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease. Even more surprising, some women have risk factors and never encounter the disease. Unfortunately, because of this uncertainty, early detection means a lot. Health professionals recommend that you see them if you find any changes with your breasts such as: • Size and shape • If you find a lump on your breast or a lump in your armpit area • Skin changes on your breast (such as peeling) • Physical changes you find in the appearance of the nipple Here are 9 ways to change your life: 1. Eat Fruit You can’t go wrong with this – almost all dietary advice comes down to the single instruction to eat more fruit and veg. Diet is thought to be a key factor in one in four cancer deaths – and animal fat in the diet is the suspect ingredient in breast cancer. The Japanese, who eat a diet of fish, rice and vegetables that is extremely low in animal fat, also have low rates of breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the blood, which encourages the growth of cancer cells. In populations with a high-fat diet, women tend to start their periods earlier and reach menopause later so they are exposed to high levels of oestrogen for longer, increasing their risk of breast cancer. Studies into what effect eating fruit and vegetables has on breast cancer have produced mixed results. One study found that, when combined

with taking exercise, the results were dramatic. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology last June, it showed that women who ate their five portions a day and walked briskly for at least 30 minutes halved their risk of breast cancer. 2. Walk It is enjoyable, simple and requires no equipment. Walking is good for all aspects of physical and mental health – and cancer is no exception. Brisk walking (or other exercise) for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, is all that’s needed. Currently only one in four women manages this. If all women did, Cancer Research UK estimates it would prevent 1,400 cases a year. Three large studies in Italy and the US showed that inactivity caused 11 per cent of cases of breast cancer. Exercise works best before the menopause, but it is effective afterwards, too. It is thought to alter oestrogen metabolism, resulting in a weaker version being made. 3. Avoid HRT Hormone replacement therapy is seen as the principal avoidable risk for breast cancer. At the height of its popularity, in 2002, an estimated two million women were taking HRT in the UK, and millions more worldwide. Tens of thousands of women will have developed breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (of the lining of the womb) as a result. Overall, women currently taking HRT are 63 per cent more likely to develop these three cancers than those who are not. Earlier hopes that these risks would be counterbalanced by a reduction in heart disease have not been borne out. Gynecologists recommend that women who wish to use it to ease the symptoms of the menopause do so for as short a time as possible. 4. Get screened Women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest possible stage have a nine in 10 chance of a successful recovery. This is the rationale for screening – to detect a tumour by mammography when it is still too small to feel. Women aged 50 to 70 are invited for screening every three years – shortly to be extended to ages 47 to 73. It is estimated that the scheme saves 1,400 lives a years in England – one life for every 500 women screened. However, there is a downside in the shape of false alarms. Screening picks up abnormalities in the breast that look like cancer but turn out not to be. Several thousand women each year suffer the anxiety and discomfort of being recalled for further tests and undergoing biopsies of the breast to check for cancer – before being given the all-clear. Screening is now more accurate, since two views of the breast are taken, reducing the chances of cancers being missed. 4. Give birth Having children, especially before the age of 30, helps protect against breast cancer. It is down to those hormones, again. Over the last century, economic progress has led to delayed childbirth and smaller families as women with their own careers have sought to balance the demands of work and home. But researchers estimate that delaying childbearing increases the risk of breast cancer by 3 per cent for each year of delay. 5. Breast-feed Breast-feeding protects against breast cancer, as well as being best for the baby. But smaller families and the rise in the number of working mothers has meant the time spent breast-feeding has reduced. Breast-feeding for six months reduces the risk, experts say. Yet many women never get that far. In England, 77 per cent of mothers start breast-feeding but more than a third switch to bottle-feeding in the first six weeks. 6. Lose weight Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer – but only after the menopause. A large European study called Epic found postmenopausal women who were obese had a 31 per cent higher risk of breast cancer than women with a

healthy weight. Reducing obesity could save 1,800 cases of breast cancer a year. Obesity increases the risk of other cancers including those of the bowel, womb, kidney and oesophagus. Overall it is estimated that 7. per cent of cancers in women and 3 per cent in men are due to being obese or overweight. In the UK, 12,000 people might avoid getting cancer each year if they maintained a healthy body weight. 7. Get a stressful job (really) A 2005 Danish study published in the British Medical Journal found high levels of daily stress reduced the risk of the disease by 40 per cent. The researchers suggest that stress may be beneficial by reducing levels of oestrogen. They draw a distinction between daily stress of the sort experienced by women in high-pressure jobs and stressful life events such as bereavement, which have previously been linked with an increase in cancer. Stress can have other damaging effects, too – on the heart, for example, and by increasing the risk of compensatory behaviour. 8. Live somewhere clean It has long been claimed that exposure to pollutants used in the manufacture of products from plastics to cosmetics has an “endocrine disrupting” effect. A report from the World Wide Fund for Nature last year claimed their role in breast cancer had been neglected. It pointed out that less than half of new breast cancer cases can be explained by genetic and lifestyle factors and chemicals in the environment could be the missing link. Other studies have contradicted this suggestion and experts point out that compared with the natural levels of oestrogen in a woman’s blood, the level of the chemicals is too small to have significant impact. Still, moving to an unpolluted region is unlikely to do harm and could encourage tother beneficial changes, such as eating healthily, exercising more, and drinking less. Don’t be nervous or anxious about finding changes in your breasts. Often these changes may not be related to cancer – but it’s worth-

while to tell your doctor as soon as possible New results from breast cancer clinical trial show non-breast cancer related causes account for most deaths. New findings from a landmark breast cancer clinical trial involving the drug letrozole show that, in this group of patients, women were more likely to die from non-breast cancer-related causes than from breast cancer-related causes. The research team found that non-breast cancer related causes accounted for 60% of deaths. The top causes of death included: cardiovascular disease including stroke (15%), other malignancies (15%), infection (6%), multiple causes (5%), and non-cardiovascular organ failure (4%). The results were particularly striking for older women. Among women aged 70 years or older, non-breast cancer-related causes accounted for 72% of deaths. The new results are published in the February 12 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The original study results were first published in The New England Journal of Medicine in October 2003 and involved 5,170 post-menopausal breast cancer survivors with a median age of 62 years (range 32 to 94 years). It determined that women who took letrozole for up to five years following 5 years of tamoxifen therapy experienced a significantly reduced risk of cancer recurrence. The clinical trial was coordinated by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials group and was funded in part by the Canadian Cancer Society. Routine use of mammography and improved treatment for breast cancer will mean that more women will survive breast cancer at older ages, at which time they might have a higher risk of death from causes other than breast cancer, says Dr Judith-Anne Chapman, lead author of the study. “The study findings show that we are successfully treating women with breast cancer. However, the study also underscores the need to pay more attention especially to older women and the potential for death from other causes,” Dr Chapman says.

AFGHANISTAN, IRAQ SYRIA, LIBYA & YEMEN! The Association of Islamic Charitable projects held its annual children’s Eid celebration at its center in New Westminster. The celebration was planned and hosted by members of the youth group known as the Muslim Youth of British Columbia, an ensemble of Muslim high school students showing the happiness of Eid to the new generation. The children’s celebration was the last of three major activities arranged by AICP on the day of Eid al-Ad-ha, beginning first with the takbirs and the Eid prayer, followed by an all-day excursion to a reserved fun center, reserved for this occasion, and ending with the children’s celebration that evening. The turnout was tremendous: parents and children alike showed up in anticipation of the events to come, and they were not disappointed. The games were tailored for children of different age groups, many of which were challenging and exciting for

the participants and the audience. They also included a surprise midway through the celebration, throwing a “massive balloon blowout” for the kids. The youth members organized and executed the games, each member tasked with a respective responsibility to ensure a smooth presentation. The biggest surprise and the most exciting was the presentation of the honorable hair of the Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam for the attendees to seek the blessing from. Bags of treats were distributed all over. A blessed day that started with takbirs had to end with praising Allah and His Messenger in a group of heartwarming chants. The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects, The MYbc Group and The AICP Chants Group ask Allah to bless our Muslim nation and the Muslims around the world with peace and prosperity.

THANKSGIVING!

By: Ms. Asma Shams Mortgage Broker Happy Thanksgiving to all of us! Hope all of you have really happy thanksgiving weekend celebrated in your respective ways. This is such a beautiful concept. I enjoyed it so much so that I would love to extend it throughout the year. Thank you!!!!!!!!! That’s what everybody likes to hear, isn’t it? Even God loves to hear it. It’s free, easy to give, rewarding. Then WHY don’t we? We say thank you most of the time in courtesy, as one of the magic words we are taught as a good behavior. These words should come from our heart. This is possible when we actually feel it understand its true meaning in deeper sense. ARE we the original creator? We earn lots of money, design or create something great, we are engineers, architects, artists, chefs…. list is endless. Have we ever thought about who gives original resources? We can make high rise buildings, bridges, infrastructure….but who produces basic material iron? A chef can cook amazing tasty dishes but can he produce basic wheat or vegetables seeds? We should be thankful to the creator of this amazing universe first. Secondly, we should be thankful to our parents for putting our needs first and then the dreams of their own life. Our teachers, friends, neighbors, relatives, any person doing our work well, and going out of way to help us…..the list is endless. It is very important to acknowledge that universe runs better with everybody helping each other by the balance of giving and taking. This awareness makes us feel grateful thus makes us kind, polite and teaches us tolerance and humbleness. When we value the people, things and circumstances, we are better human beings. We respect others and ourselves more. When we understand the importance and value of time and people, we learn to prioritize, we learn to progress with rightfulness. This feeling of thank-

fulness clears the dust of ego, selfishness, selfcenteredness in ourselves. This helps relationships better. When parents feel thankful for being blessed with children, they will pay more attention to their children with awareness, not just be a parent. When children feel thankful for their parents, love, care and sacrifices they will be working more hard to be worthy of it. Thankful citizen. When we feel thankful for rights and favors, we enjoy as citizens. We will be more aware of our duties towards a country, the place we are living. We will strive to make it a better place, better environment for our future generations and exactly that is the reason to vote. Please vote and choose your representatives.

Pizza always confuses us. It comes in a square box. When you open it, its round inside. When you start eating it, its triangle. Life and people are like pizza. Looks different. Appears different and behaves absolutely different.

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor The way to become a better listener is to practice “active listening.” This is where you make a conscious effort to hear not only the words that another person is saying but, more importantly, try to understand the complete message being sent. In order to do this you must pay attention to the other person very carefully. You cannot allow yourself to become distracted by whatever else may be going on around you, or by forming counter arguments that you’ll make when the other person stops speaking. Nor can you allow yourself to get bored, and lose focus on what the other person is saying. All of these contribute to a lack of listening and understanding. Tip: If you’re finding it particularly difficult to concentrate on what someone is saying, try repeating their words mentally as they say them – this will reinforce their message and help you stay focused. To enhance your listening skills, you need to let the other person know that you are listening to what he or she is saying. To understand the impor-

Younis breaks Miandad runs record

After breaking the 22-year-old record of Javed Miandad to become Pakistan’s leading Test run-scorer, Younis Khan said he has the hunger to aim for the 10,000-run mark. Younis went past Miandad’s tally of 8832 runs in emphatic style when he lofted Moeen Ali over deep midwicket shortly after tea on the opening day in Abu Dhabi. Given the prolific 12 months he has had - averaging over 80 since last October - the expectation was of something significant but he was not at his most fluent and chipped Stuart Broad to short mid-on for 38. But Younis was relieved to have ticked off the milestone, saying that it had been on his mind since he moved within touching distance during the series against Sri Lanka earlier this year. “I kept on thinking about crossing Javed bhai, the greatest batsman Pakistan had. I might not be as skilful as

he was but I am feeling privileged to cross him. Due credit should also be given to him because he is the one whom I have been following and heeding his advice to make it possible.” Younis admitted he was nervous as the landmark approached, describing Miandad’s two decade-old record as like a “wall” in front of him that he had to “jump” to get across. “I had to push myself,” he said. “The last two weeks had been difficult because of fatigue, traveling and that’s the reason I just went with fast-forwarding mode and wanted to just do it at once.” With one weight lifted from his shoulders, Younis is now refocussing himself for a final push in the closing stages of his career although he said he felt he had at least two more years left in him at international level. “I am not satisfied yet and I don’t want to be complacent with these records. I feel I can

do more than this,” he said. “Every day is a new day, every innings is a new one and every moment in the game is a new one so I think of all the advice from Javed bhai. I don’t want to relax and want to carry on with my runs. “Someday I might be satisfied with my goals and achievements but I am pushing myself for more. I believe in next the two years if I remain in the same mode I see myself bigger than this and would like to score 10,000 runs.” Ahead of the first Test against England, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq paid tribute to Younis’ role as a fulcrum of the middle order. “It’s always an honour to share dressing room with players like Younis Khan,” he said. “He has always been the key man in the Pakistan sides, so important for our wins and has been doing well for .the last few years. He is really performing well with an aver-

age of 54 which is great and we always love the way he plays and the way he helps every other player, especially the youngsters and it’s an honour to play with him.” The other player Younis overtook, Inzamam-ulHaq, narrowly failed to take the record off Miandad in 2007 when he was stumped for 3 in his final Test innings against South Africa in Lahore. Aaron Sanchez stood in the Toronto Blue Jays locker room grinning and drenched in champagne with a Go-Pro camera attached to his forehead, recording every moment of the celebration during one of the sweetest and most bizarre nights of his life. He was one of the three pitchers – all under the age of 25 – who helped deliver the Jays to a 6-3 Game 5 victory over the Texas Rangers in Wednesday’s Game 5 of the American League Division Series, pitching through dugout-clearing melees, beer cans flying down from the stands, and roller-coaster twists of fate. Marcus Stroman had been solid in the start, then the Jays called on two youngsters to close it out in the late innings. Sanchez, 23, and closer Roberto Osuna, 20, didn’t show any young nerves. “The future is here, we’re ready,” a joyous Sanchez said. “Hopefully there is more of that to come in the next few years. The three youngsters did it, it was a team win. We were down 0-2 in Texas. The hitters got us back into it. You

never know in a Game 5.” The second-year major-leaguer had to tune out the deafening boos and the beer cans being launched onto the Rogers Centre field by angry fans after he watched Russell Martin brush the bat of Texas hitter Shin-Soo Choo while throwing the ball back to the mound, and it dribbled to toward third base and was ruled a live throw rather than interference. A Texas run scored, and the Jays were down 3-2. The fans were livid and loud, but Sanchez stayed in the zone through a lengthy review that only seemed to further agitate the fans. “I thought, ‘man, this can’t happen, this is crazy stuff,’ and they sat there for what felt like a half hour with no answers,” Sanchez said. “When beer cans were coming down, I tried not to think about it, I tried to stay locked in. I knew I had to pitch. I needed our guys to get up so we could get some runs.” The Jays provided four more dramatic runs, and Osuna was called in late in the eighth inning to close it down. Both

men, hurling fastballs at some 95 miles an hour, held steady. Osuna was signed by the Blue Jays out of Mexico as a 16-year-old, and played three seasons in their minorleague organization before he became the youngest pitcher to appear in a game for the organization this past April. He holds the distinction of being the first player born in 1995 to play in Major League Baseball. As he has much of this year, Osuna remained cool as a cucumber with the 6-3 lead. He faced five batters in a stadium jammed to the rafters with fans who, before this series, hadn’t seen playoff baseball since 1993. He allowed no hits, striking out veterans Josh Hamilton and Mike Napoli with his face as blank as though he was tossing warmups out in the bullpen. Osuna’s first show of emotion came with the final strikeout, as he looked upward in thanks before his teammates swallowed him up in an avalanche of embraces. “Those kids have nerves of steel, they aren’t afraid,” Martin said. “They en-

joy it. They love being in the moment.” Meanwhile, Toronto left-handed reliever Brett Cecil was throwing lightly before Game 5, a surprising scene after he suffered a torn calf muscle during Game 2 last week. The left-handed relief pitcher was injured while running down Mike Napoli between first and second base. His absence has left the Jays with just two left-handed pitchers on the roster: starter David Price and reliever Aaron Loup, who left the team earlier this week because of an unspecified family issue. Because Cecil was removed from the Jays’ playoff roster and replaced with righty Ryan Tepera, Cecil becomes ineligible to play in the ALCS. He could, however, return to pitch in the World Series if the Jays advance that far. Source: Globe and Mail
