Modi’s visit to the UK is overshadowed by nationalist violence in India
As India’s prime minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit Britain, an ominous situation is developing in his country. In the last few months, mobs of fanatics, some linked to his party, the BJP, have lynched Muslims for eating, carrying or possessing beef, or on mere suspicion of having done so. The body of the latest victim, Mohammad Hasmat Ali, was discovered last week in the north-east state of Manipur. The slaughter of cows, considered holy by most Hindus, is proscribed in several states, but people of many faiths, including Hindus, still eat beef. It is clear, however, that the Muslims were killed not because they ate or smuggled beef but because they did this while being Muslim. In other attacks two Dalit children, aged one and two, were burned to death, allegedly by upper-caste men, who doused petrol over their house as the family slept in the northern state of Haryana; and a thinktank director who hosted a former Pakistani minister’s book launch

Challenges for the Ambitious Trudeau
Fairly speaking, hiring the best person for the job regardless of gender, creed, color or ethnicity is the best thing to do, indeed. This means a cabinet with more men than women, or more women than men is fine either way because of merit system. On the contrary, if there is a 50% female quota, there is denial of the opportunity for a more qualified person. Women make up just over a quarter of the Liberal caucus, yet they have captured half of cabinet which is beyond understanding. The problem with quota system: It may keep a more suitable person away from the position unfairly as true merit is most likely to be compromised. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau selected 50 female federal liberal MPs for his cabinet fulfilling his promise of honouring gender parity (50-50 gender quota) first time in the history of Canada. Furthermore, there are 18 rookies, 2 aboriginals, 2 disabled people, one Muslim lady and 4 Sikhs in his cabinet now. First female Muslim Minister Maryam Monsef from Peterborough (Ontario) has been appointed Minister of Democratic Institutions. This important portfolio goes to this young lady who came at the age of eleven from Afghanistan to Montreal as a child with her widow mother and two sisters seeking asylum. And the family drove to Peterborough Ontario to settle for good. Wow! A brand new prime minister has to cope with new and stale-challenges transferred from the Harper era: First scenario happens to be the rejection of proposed Keystone Canada-U.S. pipeline. President Obama under domestic political pressure had to reject the Key-
stone XL pipeline. Killing the pipeline allows him to claim aggressive action on the environment. Shortly after the rejection announcement, Prime Minister Trudeau issued a statement saying his government is disappointed by the decision but respects the right of the United States to make it. He added further that the Canada-U.S. relationship was much bigger than any single project. Despite the disappointment, Trudeau signaled Ottawa’s willingness to work more closely with the U.S. officials on energy and climate change. Positively, PM Trudeau seeks a new beginning with U.S. The negative decision on the Keystone XL oil pipeline has divided petroleum interests and environmentalists for more than seven years which is economically painful. President Barack Obama capped a seven-year cross-border drama by rejecting the Keystone XL project, while Prime Minister Trudeau has promised quick action on climate change. Hopefully, the U.S. officials would soon open talks with the Canadian officials for stepping up cooperation on energy and global warming. This would pave the way for cooperation between Obama and Trudeau on ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets in advance of UN COP21 climate-change talks in Paris some times in December. Furthermore, the Canadian government supports the proposed $12 billion Energy East pipeline as economically sound recipe. This pipe line, from Alberta across the country to New Brunswick, now appears to be the most viable option for getting oil sands-derived petroleum to market abroad despite the stiff opposition from environmentalists.
Also, Trans Canada seems committed to building Keystone XL and has not ruled out filing a new application for a presidential permit. Other development is more balanced approach to the Israeli Arab situation: Mr Dion, (Minister of Foreign Affairs) announced this week, that the Liberals are calling an end to Israel’s specialrelationship, and we will now see a more balanced approach to the Israeli Arab situation. Trudeau is making the right decision. We should not become one with the terrorists, unnecessarily being part of the slaughter. We should be targeting more of the humanitarian aspects, focusing on diffusing the situation. Also high on Mr McCallum’s priority list is the Liberal plan to speed up processing times for family reunification, as a part of a renewed approach to immigration. In the short term, McCallum said the most pressing issue for his department is the Liberal commitment to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada by year’s end. He said the government is still working toward that target, but is also determined to do proper security and health checks along the way. He said the public service is working “around the clock,” looking at every option to get Syrian refugees to Canada. “Air transport, either commercially or through the air force, is possible, as is transport by ships. All of those things are being looked at and we will choose the most efficient and cost effective way to bring this about.” Housing the Syrian refugees upon arrival: Options are military bases, the Red Cross and Syrian families in Canada. Summing up: There is a need to improve
Alberta’s environmental record and reputation so that we can achieve our goal of building Canada’s energy infrastructure, including pipelines to new markets. (The Canadian Press) One must remember that the purpose of a democratic society is to listen to each others. Canada should continue to strive for normalising friendly relationship with all countries of the world to boost up understanding and trading with them. Step-motherly treatment of Pakistan: Sadly, Harper has been ignoring Pakistan, but Mr Trudeau may repair the damage now by encouraging bi-lateral relations between Canada and Pakistan. Canadians of Pakistani origin are more than eager for Mr Trudeau’s Pakistan visit in the near future as a State guest. In that regard, High Commissioner of Pakistan at Ottawa must immediately move forward facilitating such a tour of high significance. Canadians have no clue: Only Prime Minister Trudeau is aware of what actually prompted him to give away half of the cabinet-portfolios to the females who make around 25 percent of the Liberal caucus. A lack of proportionality remains questionable. Rule of thumb: The person should be picked if he or she is the most suitable to optimize performance to serve Canada. As Prime Minister Trudeau is almost fully loaded with the best tools and is equipped with a cabinet well-tailored with a remarkable “gender-parity,” time is ripe for normal delivery sooner the better. In case there is a failure in terms of delivery, Trudeau cabinet should be re-selected based on merit, not gender.

If Gaming grant is HARAM then all the benefits? By: Jamal Sattar, Surrey, BC. The B C Muslim Association BCMA) represents the Muslims who reside in BC and practice the aqaids of Ahlisunnah waljamah. The Association has been in existence for many years providing religious services to the Muslim Community. I have been a member of BCMA since early 1970s.It functions under the guidance of Quran and Sunnah. I find it hard to believe that the BCMA leadership or decision makers did not know that the gaming grant is haram spatially when it employs ulamas. The government donates the gaming grants to non profit organizations who apply for the funds and are qualified for it. Our understanding is that the Govt collects these funds from the liquor sale and gambling profits which may be legal for cultural activities but definitely are illegal (Haram) for Islamic ac-
tivities, masajid and madaris. As Muslims we all know that the liquor and gambling are haram in Islam and obviously the funds collected from such sources are also haram and forbidden. A while ago we heard that BCMA has received funds from the GOVT for the senior citizens center but it turned out to be the gaming grants. We appreciate The Canada Times Newspaper who has brought it this issue to the attention of the Muslim Community that BCMA has received the Gaming Grants in the amount of $160,000. This gaming grant is illegal and HARAM as it is generated through Casino, Lottery and liquor sale. We heard that there was an annual general meeting of BCMA in Richmond Masjid on Sunday November 1, 2015 and the gaming grant was also discussed. we have learnt this from a reliable source that the owner of one Muslim newspaper has supported BCMA openly loudly and clearly in receiving the gaming grant. He further stated that if the gaming grant is HARAM then all the benefits, funds or grants issued by the Canadian government are also HARAM. If this brother has any Fatwa from any Darul Ifta he must print it in his newspaper otherwise it will be considered a misleading statement. May Allah give us all hidaya and keep us on the right path.
‘Congratulation New P. M.’ By: Gulshan Aalani
As good faithful citizens we welcome the new P. M. Justin Trudeau and wish him well with the sigh of relief and peace. Whether we voted for him or not we are still Canadians, our ID of ‘Canadian’ do not change as the rule of democracy we don’t adopt our ID titles after the party leader’s name, unlike the wrongful religious ID based on the leader’s names dividing one community created by the Divine authority. When one accepts Islam the religion ordained by Allah-Creator-GOD one is bestowed with the title ‘Muslim’, abiding one to be faithful to HIM, worshiping HM only, obeying HIS commands and fulfill the perfect duty to HIM, HIS appointed final Prophet and the religion based on Prophet’s teaching only that doesn’t divide the One community by changing the title attaching to the leader’s names. The job of performing di-
vine duties perfectly is not easy as it is not onlytowards Allah but the duty to mankind regardless of the color, culture or religion. “Muslim’ becomes the keeper, and the helper of mankind and becomes a good Samaritan guarding the safety of all the citizens of the world and speaks up against the wrong doings of any tyrant leaders. Evidently, the P.M. too have a most difficult great task to perform to take care of the citizens and keep them happy. He has pages and pages of important issues to sort out that is more work increased than his campaign. Isn’t it amazing how they manage the hard work of public speaking for hours and hours and hardly sits down at the desk ordering what to do, unlike some religious leaders taking advantage of the false leadership. Well, let us perform our duty to the P.M. and the citizens for their safety

Israeli anger as EU agrees Australia accused of denying to label settlement products detainees medical care
The European Commission has introduced new labelling guidelines for products produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The measure requires that producers must explicitly label products that come from settlements built on land occupied by Israel if they are sold in the European Union (EU). The interpretive notice of the new measures published by the EU today said: “The European Union, in line with international law, does not recognise Israel’s sovereignty over the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967, namely the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and does not consider them to be part of Israel’s territory, irrespective of their legal status under domestic Israeli law. The Union has made it clear that it will not recognise any changes to pre-1967 borders, other than those agreed by the parties to the Middle East Peace Process.” The interpretive notice also makes it clear that it is not a new law, rather it reflects the Commission’s understanding of relevant EU legislation. It also makes it clear that there are two kind of distinctions between products that should be labeled. mandatory and voluntary. Mandatory indication of origin or labeling includes products such as fresh fruits, vegetables, wine, honey, olive oil, eggs, poultry and organic products as well as cosmetics. Voluntary products applies, among other things, to pre-packaged foodstuffs and industrial products excluding cosmetics. The notice makes it clear that labeling must be correct and not misleading. It
adds that enforcement of this notice is the responsibility of individual states. The move drew an angry response from the Israeli government, with the foreign ministry issuing a statement denouncing the EU measure. The Israeli government had strongly lobbied European countries and leaders, arguing against the labelling of Israeli products. In the statement, the Israeli foreign ministry called the EU’s decision “exceptional” and “discriminatory”. Writing on his Facebook page, the Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz described the measure as “disguised antiSemitism.” Israel has occupied the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem since the 1967 war. Under international law, Israel is prohibited form building settlements in the occupied territories. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Dr Mustafa Bargouthi, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), described the EU measure as an “important initial step that would open the door to boycott Israeli products made in the occupied territories”. “The EU decision sends the message that the Israeli occupation is illegitimate and all the byproducts of that occupation, including business and commerce, should also be delegitimised,” he said. US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said on Tuesday that Israel should not be surprised by the EU decision to label products produced in the settlements. He also stressed the US position that it “opposes any efforts to delegitimise the state of Israel”. At the same time, Toner affirmed that the US policy on the issue of Israeli settlements has not changed. “We believe settlements are illegitimate and are harmful to prospects to peace for peace and to Israel’s long-term security,” he said. The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, amounting to approximately $32bn in 2014. Israel and the EU are parties to the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which took effect in 2000 and regulates the trade between them. Israel is also part of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership (Euromed) agreement which include 16 European and Arab countries in the region. The Euromed intends to foster economic integration between the countries in the Mediterranean region. Source: Al-Jazeera
Spare rooms wanted for Syrian refugees arriving in B.C.
If you’ve got a spare room or an empty basement suite, the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. wants to hear from you. With as many as 3,000 Syrian refugees poised to arrive in B.C. before the end of the year, the organization is “bracing” for the “largest refugee influx in the history of the province,” said Chris Friesen, director of settlement services for ISSBC. Although settling the refugees will be challenging, Friesen called it a “bold, humanitarian measure” by the new federal government. “Securing permanent housing (for the refugees) will be impossible without your help,” Friesen said in his call to the public for action. “We need to turn over every rock in this province to find the housing that will be necessary.” A sign-up website is now live and has already collected 61
housing offers, 90 volunteer offers and three employment leads, but many, many more are needed, Friesen said. “It’s an indication of the overwhelming support British Columbians want to provide,” Friesen said. Volunteers are needed to help the refugees settle in, including things such as taking families to the library or speaking English with them for as little as a few hours a week. They’re particularly looking for trauma counsellors to volunteer their time, because about onethird of the refugees are expected to have post-traumatic stress disorder. The Syrian refugees are expected to settle mostly in Surrey, Coquitlam, Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver, although some Syrian refugees who have already arrived are living in Delta and Richmond, Friesen said. The mayor of Coquitlam, a Surrey city councillor and Vancouver’s deputy mayor were on hand to join the call to action. Surrey alone is expecting as many as 500 children and youths younger than 19, a number that will put pressure on schools in that growing city. Surrey Coun. Judy Villaneuve urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to waive a requirement that refugees repay loans for airfare and medical exams, which can add up to as much as $10,000 for a family. “This puts a huge financial burden (on refugees) … and further impoverishes them,” Villaneuve said. Asylum seekers detained offshore are being denied access to urgent medical care in Australia because immigration officials fear they will access legal assistance otherwise unavailable to them, an alliance of health workers says. The allegation comes from the group Doctors 4 Refugees that reviews medical cases at the request of refugees detained in offshore prisons on Nauru, Manus, and Christmas Island. Despite a lack of medical equipment and expertise available locally, it is increasingly rare for detainees to be sent to Australia for treatment. “There’s a push to keep them away from Australia,” said Dr Barri Phatarfod, cofounder of the medical alliance. “The fear is that in Australia they may have access to legal assistance and the courts.” The claim is backed by documents shown to Al Jazeera by the the Melbourne-based Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC). In an email referring to an ongoing legal case before the High Court that challenges the legality of offshore detentions, an official at the Department of Immigration stated: “This is likely to cause problems with being able to return transitory persons, as more and more plaintiffs join the litigation. More than 200 offshore detainees who travelled to Australia for medical treatment are currently able to stay in Australia awaiting the judgement in the High Court case. They could be returned to Manus and Nauru if the court declares the legal challenge invalid. However, Peter Dutton, the minister for immigration, told ABC radio last month that asylum seekers are running a “racket” by coming to Australia for medical care, and then seeking legal assistance to avoid being returned. Phatarfod said it is hard to gauge just what medical facilities are available in the offshore processing centres. “There’s so much secrecy. But we know they don’t have a lot of equipment. There is a lack of antibiotics and a lack of diagnostic equipment as well as a lack of pathology services,” she said. The refugee prisons, owing to their location in remote tropical locations, can present specific health problems, as can overcrowding, said Phatarfod. “With so many people crammed together infections are passed on. Diarrhoea is a constant problem, particularly among children.” Phatarfod’s group reviewed the medical file of a young asylum seeker who died after a skin infection turned into fatal septicaemia. Hamid Kehazaei died after a raft of treatment failures, according to Doctors 4 Refugees. They say Kehazaei should have been sent to Australia for early medical treatment that could have saved his life. The bacteria responsible for Kehazaei’s infection, while associated with a high
mortality rate, is not intrinsically lethal if treated promptly. Last month, a Somali detainee who claimed she was raped on Nauru, was flown to Australia for an abortion and then secretly repatriated to the prison on a charter flight to evade a court injunction. Phatarfod told Al Jazeera there are other pregnant women held offshore. “There’s one woman who will probably need to have a caesarean,” she said. “No provision has so far been made for her. We don’t know what will happen to her.” In the latest case involving critical medical care for offshore refugees, it was reported on Friday that the company providing medical care on Nauru had reached out to a neo-natal specialist via the networking site LinkedIn. The company asked him to travel to Nauru ahead of an imminent and clinically difficult birth. The woman concerned, a Kurdish asylum seeker, is due to give birth any day but diabetes and a difficult medical history mean there are fears for her health - and for the health of her baby. It is an issue emphasised by Dr Peter Young, the former director of mental health services for the private contractor hired by the Australian government. In 2014, he resigned in frustration over his inability to provide effective psychiatric treatment to patients. Young has strongly criticised the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for delays in bringing patients in need of specialist care to Australia. Incarceration is itself a health risk, he said. “We know that people in detention have a range of medical disorders directly related to the time spent in detention,” he told Al Jazeera. “There’s a concern that if people arrive onshore they may have access to legal counsel and other assistance.” For doctors such as Young, who have worked in detention centres, raising concerns about the healthcare available to refugees now comes with an added risk. A new law, the Border Force Act, could see doctors, nurses, and other humanitarian workers with experience working in Australia’s offshore prisons facing up to two years in jail for speaking out about conditions there. “Doctors are not people who tend to be politically active,” said Phatarfod. “But this new law has upset many people and now many of us feel like we need to get organised and speak up.” “Decisions affecting these individuals should be made based on their health, well-being and safety, nothing else. They are people in our care,” Webb told Al Jazeera. “You have to wonder why the government is so afraid of vulnerable people having access to lawyers and to the Australian justice system.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Brotherhood activists defiant Slovenia starts erecting razor over ‘UAE pressure’ on UK wire on Croatia border
A senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood living in the UK told Al Jazeera his organisation has “nothing to hide” after reports that the United Arab Emirates had put pressure on the British government to crack down on the group. Mohamed Soudan, a former foreign policy adviser to the deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, said on Wednesday that if the government had any proof of wrongdoing, it would have acted against the group already. “We never break the law, we don’t encourage violence, we want to live in peace and have nothing to hide... They can’t do anything because we’re doing nothing wrong,” Soudan said over the phone. His reaction came after a report carried by The Guardian newspaper that purported to show that the UAE had promised the completion of a $9bn arms contract if the British Prime Minister David Cameron clamped down on the group, along with other incentives. Cameron ordered a review into the activities of the Brotherhood and its alleged ties to extremists in March last year. The review was completed the following month but its finding have not yet been published, with reports in the British media suggesting it was being suppressed to appease Gulf countries, and Egypt. Soudan said the delay proved that the British government had no evidence against his organisation and that pressure from the UAE and its Gulf allies had kept the issue going. “We’ve seen the leaks in the Guardian, Independent, and others. There is nothing... They [UAE] are using their money to threaten us here,” Soudan said. The UK prime minister’s spokesman told Al Jazeera that the British government was “still fully committed to publishing the key findings of the Muslim Brotherhood review”. “We will be publishing those findings by the end of the year... We’re not going to speculate on its content in advance,” the spokesman said. The leak to The Guardian is not the first time the UAE has been accused of using its vast financial clout to target the Muslim Brotherhood and affiliated groups. BritishPalestinian activist Azzam Tamimi said that his bank account, along with those of dozens of other individuals and groups linked to the Brotherhood, were shut down by the HSBC bank last year. “We now know for a fact that the UAE did pressure HSBC to close the banking account of several Muslim individuals and organisations in the UK, including my own and my wife’s,” Tamimi said, referring to reports that the UAE
had influenced banking risk assessments on groups it accused of having ties to the Brotherhood. Tamimi said the government was making life “increasingly difficult” for activists who had fallen foul of the UAE, but that the country would not get its way. “The UK has a vibrant civil society and a sound legal system that we hope will stand in the way of any despotic tendencies... The UAE rulers thought they just could use their economic leverage to get the UK to do what they wanted.” Abdullah Arian from Georgetown University told Al Jazeera that the UAE’s policies against the Muslim Brotherhood could be viewed “in light of a broader regional agenda to suppress opposition movements”. “The continued economic and political situation in Egypt - where the [Abdel Fattah ] el-Sisi regime has proved incapable of restoring stability to the country - has necessitated a continued crackdown on its political opponents by Sisi’s regional allies. “The Muslim Brotherhood’s proven ability to survive prior crackdowns has pushed its opponents to pressure other countries to isolate the group and deny its members freedom of movement abroad,” Arian said. The UAE was a backer of the July 2013 coup in Egypt that removed the Muslim Brotherhood’s Morsi from power, and the crackdown that followed. The country has used its political and military muscle to target supporters of the group in the Middle East and outside the region. In Libya, leaked recordings appeared to show that the UAE was backing General Khalifa Haftar, a powerful commander supporting the rival government based in the eastern city of Tobruk. It supplied arms to Haftar in his battle against the Tripoli-based administration, which includes the Muslim Brotherhood. US officials have also accused the UAE of launching air strikes against Tripoli-aligned militias in Libya from bases in Egypt, a charge the Tobruk government and Egypt have denied. In November last year, dozens of organisations accused of ties with the Muslim Brotherhood were designated as terrorist organisations by the UAE. The list included several UK-based organisations such as the Federation of Islamic Organisations, Muslim Association of Britain, and the charity Islamic Relief UK, which works with the British government on a number of projects. Last month, an investigation by the British newspaper the Mail on Sunday found that the UAE had hired a London-based lobbying firm, Quiller Consultants, to help it mount a media campaign against Qatar, which has been accused by its Gulf neighbours of backing the Muslim Brotherhood. Amnesty International has condemned the UAE for targeting members of the Islah party, which the government claims is affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. In a report published in November last year, Amnesty said Islah members held by authorities had complained of torture, and others were being detained at undisclosed locations without charge or trial. Modi’s visit to the UK .. Cont from Page 1 in Mumbai had ink smeared on his face. Equally disturbing, however, is the reaction from those in the establishment or their supporters. Soon after the lynching of Mohammed Akhlaq, on 28 September, a spokesman for Modi’s ruling BJP, Tarun Vijay, wrote in an editorialmeant to condemn the killing: “Lynching a person merely on suspicion is absolutely wrong” – as if implying that if you’re sure of guilt, lynching is OK. A day after the Dalit children’s murder, India’s junior defence minister appeared to liken the killing of the children to the pelting of dogs. Most of all, however, critics say it was Modi himself who spawned the narrative of beef as a critical issue during elections last year by warning of a “pink revolution”(a widespread slaughter of cows) if his party didn’t win. Almost every day, a leader from the ruling party makes a provocative statement, mostly targeting Muslims and those who express dissent. One of India’s biggest actors, Shah Rukh Khan, who spoke about the need for tolerance, was called a traitor and Pakistani agent by senior BJP figures. This growing atmosphere of hate has sparked an unprecedented protest by scores of writers who have returned their awards to the country’s premier literary body, the Sahitya Akademy, including most recently Arundhati Roy. Hundreds of artists, scientists and historians have now joined the protest. In support of the writers, Salman Rushdie denounced the “thuggish violence” sweeping India. India’s culture minister advised them to stop writing.
Slovenia has started erecting a razor wire fence along parts of its border with Croatia amid heavy security to “direct the flow of migrants” into the country, the government has said. Army trucks carrying wire fencing arrived in the border village of Veliki Obrez in southeastern Slovenia early on Wednesday to begin work on the barrier. Slovenia does not plan to “significantly reduce” the flow of migrants into the country, Bostjan Sefic, state secretary at the interior ministry, said. “The barriers do not have a purpose of preventing arrivals to Slovenia or significantly reducing them ... Their purpose is to direct the flow of migrants to controlled entrance points,” Sefic told a news conference. About 180,000 people, many fleeing war in Syria and Afghanistan, have entered Slovenia since mid-October, most of them heading north to Austria and then Germany. Europe is facing a record influx of refugees and is deeply divided on how to act. European Union leaders are due to meet in Malta for a special migration summit later on Wednesday to try to iron out their differences. The main point of disagreement in the EU is over mandatory national quotas to share out the number of asylum seekers among the 28 member states. Hungary, which closed its border to refugees in October, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia all strongly oppose the quotas. Slovenia is facing more immediate and pressing logistical concerns. Prime Minister Miro Cerar said on Tuesday that the country, the smallest on the refugee route, does not have the resources to shelter
large numbers over the harsh winter if Austria shut its border. Slovenia’s border with Croatia will remain open, Cerar added, but the fence will prevent refugees to come into the country outside the border crossing. Slovenian soldiers also erected another 100 metres of wire fencing on an open field near the border village of Gibina in eastern Slovenia, a cameraman with the Reuters news agency there said. No migrants were present at either of the two places, but large numbers of soldiers and police were at both scenes, some guarding construction equipment, Reuters said. Croatia on Wednesday said Slovenia’s move was unnecessary and a waste of money. “It would be better if they built a reception centres, similarly to what we did,” Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic told reporters. “No wire can stop people to find their way and it is better to make their way organised.” Slovenia said this week it was not going to build any long term reception centres. The UN refugee agency UNHCR said more than 3,000 people were waiting to enter a refugee camp at Presevo in southern Serbia, from where they will probably make their way to Croatia and then Slovenia. Another 3,000 people were expected to enter Serbia on Wednesday, after 9,000 arrived a day earlier, a UNHCR field officer in Presevo said. About 175 policemen from other EU states have come to Slovenia to bolster the local force. Another 100 are expected in the next two weeks. Source: Al-Jazeera
Thousands of protesters marched coffins containing the decapitated bodies of seven Shia Hazaras through the Afghan capital Kabul Wednesday to demand justice for the gruesome beheading’s, which the United Nations (UN) say may be considered a war crime. Demonstrators gathered in the rain in west Kabul and marched towards the city centre, chanting death slogans to the Taliban and the self-styled Islamic State (IS) group while demanding justice and protection from the government. Though it is unclear who is responsible, both the Taliban and IS affiliates have been blamed for the beheading’s, which have prompted fears of sectarian bloodshed in the war-torn country. The marchers carried pictures of the victims, including two women and one child — a girl, whose coffin was carried by grieving women. “This is a protest to demand justice for the victims who were so mercilessly murdered, we demand justice for people who are brutally killed by terrorists everyday,” protester Mohammad Hadi told AFP. “We want revenge, today they kill us, tomorrow they kill you,” the protesters chanted. The protesters plan to take the bodies, which were brought to Kabul Tuesday night after being found in restive Zabul province, to the presidential palace, organisers said. The protest came as the UN followed the Afghan government and the United States (US) in condemning
the killings, suggesting they may have been a war crime. “These senseless murders may amount to war crimes and the perpetrators must be held accountable,” Nicholas Haysom, the UN’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, said in a statement Wednesday. The circumstances surrounding the beheadings remain unclear. The bodies of the seven victims, who are believed to have been held hostage by unknown gunmen for months, were found on Saturday in Zabul province, where fighting between rival Taliban groups has escalated over recent days. Some local officials have attributed the macabre killings to IS sympathisers, however the government does not have control of the area and the claim could not be verified. Afghanistan’s intelligence agency on Tuesday rejected the suggestion that IS affiliates were responsible, saying that the southern province has been the scene of deadly clashes between the rival Taliban factions for days. The three million-strong Afghan Hazara community has been persecuted for decades, with thousands killed in the late 1990s by the mainly Pashtun Sunni Taliban. There has been an upsurge in violence against the mostly-Shia Hazara this year, with a series of kidnappings and killings that have triggered a wave of fury on social media and condemnation by the Afghan president and the US. Massive protest in Kabul over decapitation of Shia Hazaras
Protesters are planning to stage a series of demonstrations to disrupt Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit to the UK. The Hindu-nationalist leader will arrive in London on 12 November for a three-day trip. One of the main groups behind the demonstration, the secular Awaaz Network, said it expect a “diverse and colourful” crowd made of thousands of people.“There will be people from Hindu groups, Muslim groups Dalits, who have been victims of many attacks [in India], women groups and anti-racism groups,” said Suresh Grover, one of the organisers. The Awaaz Network was also behind a protest stunt on 8 November that saw the words “Modi not welcome” and an image of the Indian prime minister wielding a sword in front of a swastika projected on to the Houses of Parliament. The swastika, the OM sign in Hinduism, indicated Modi’s alleged use of religious symbols for authoritarian ends, the group explained. “I think it sent a clear message that a large part of the Indian community here rejects the politics of hate and intolerance, wherever it takes place,” Grover said.Other demonstrations are expected to follow Modi during his official visit. After leaving the House of Commons, the Indian prime minister will head for the Guildhall’s Old Library, where he is to address City executives. He will then visit a Jaguar Land Rover factory in Solihull before being Cameron’s guest at the PM’s country retreat, at Chequers in Buckinghamshire. F A I T H Narrated by Anas ibn Malik - Al-Tirmidhi “(The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,) said to me: ‘My son, if you are in a position to pass your morning and evening keeping your heart free from malice against anyone, then act according to (this high ideal).’ He then said: ‘That is my Sunnah (example), and he who loves my Sunnah loves me.’”
Growing Old Is Unavoidable By: Haroon Yahya
T
he destructive effects of the passage of years are observable in one’s own body. As the years go by, the body, the most precious possession a human being has, goes through an irreversible process of destruction. The changes a human being experiences throughout his life are recounted in the Qur’an as follows: “It is Allah Who created you in a state of (helpless) weakness, then gave (you) strength after weakness, then, after strength, gave (you) weakness and a hoary head: He creates as He wills, and it is He Who has all knowledge and power.” (Qur’an, 30:54) The later years of life are the times most neglected in the future plans of an adult, except in the anxious process of saving for old-age pensions. Indeed, being too close to death, people usually develop a hesitant approach to this period. When someone tries to talk about old age, others feel concerned and attempt to change this “unpleasant” topic as soon as possible. The routine of daily life is also a good way of escaping from the thought of these potentially miserable years of life. So, it is postponed until the day one inevitably meets it. No doubt, the main reason for such avoidance is the assumption that one has endless time until death comes upon one. This mistaken idea often leads to great grief. That is simply because, no matter how old one is, the only real possessions remaining from one’s past are dimly-recalled memories. One barely remembers childhood. It is even hard to recall exactly what happened during the last decade. The greatest ambitions of a young man, important decisions, and the goals to which he is most committed, all lose their significance once they are experienced and done. That is why to tell a “long” life story is a vain endeavor. Whether a teenager or an adult, this should prompt man to make an important decision about his life. For instance, if you are 40 and expect to live until your mid-sixties — and of that you have no guarantee — those remaining 25 years will surely pass
as quickly as the preceding 40 years. The same holds h ld true even if your life lif is i prolonged a great deal, since the remaining thirty or forty years will, likewise, pass before you even notice. This is, surely, a perpetual reminder of the true nature of this world. One day every living soul on this earth will leave this world and there is no return. Hence, man should set aside his prejudices and be more realistic about his life. Time passes very quickly and each day brings on further physical weakness and more impaired thinking rather than fresher dynamism and a younger figure. In brief,, g growing old is a manifestation of man’s inability to control his own body, life andd destiny. Time’s adverse effects on the body become visible during this period. Allah informs us aboutt this in the following verse: “It is Allah Who creates you and takes your souls at death; and of you there are some who are sent back to a feeble age, so that they know nothing after having known (much); for Allah is AllKnowing, All-Powerful.” (Qur’an, 16:70) In medicine, advanced old age is also called “the second childhood”. Hence, during this latter stage of life, elderly people just like children need care, since their bodily and mental functions go through certain alterations.
Names Of A l l a h (SWT) & Mohammad (PBUH) Last edition Al Adal name of Allah(swt) & Names were Al -Baith Mohammad(saw) name.
As one grows older, ld physical h i l andd spiritual ii l characteristics h i i pertaining i i to childhood hildh d beb come more apparent. Elderly people fail to do many tasks requiring physical strength. Changes in judgment, impaired thinking, difficulties in walking, maintaining balance and speech, impediments, memory impairment and gradual memory loss, and changes in mood or behavior are only a few symptoms of diseases commonly seen in old age. In short, after a certain period, people often regress to a state of childish dependency both physically and mentally. Life both begins g and ends in an infant-like state.
This is evidently not a random process. process It is possible that man could remain young until he dies. Yet Allah reminds man about the temporary nature of this world by making the quality of his life deteriorate at certain stages of life. This process serves as a clear reminder that life is slipping away. Allah explains this matter in the verse below: “O mankind! If you have doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of a
drop, then out of d a leech-like clot, then th out of a morsel se of flesh, partly formed and partly unfo formed, in order that We fo may m manifest (Our power) to you; and We cause whom We W will to rest in the wombs for fo an appointed term, then We bring you out as babes, then (fosb ter te you) that you may reach your age a of full strength; and some of you are a called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they b know nothing after having known (much), k and (further), you see the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour rain down on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs).” (Qur’an, 22:5) Growing old is unavoidable. Nobody, without exception, can escape it. Yet seeing celebrities becoming older has a deeper influence on us since their physical deterioration is openly observable. Witnessing the ageing of people renowned for their fame, wealth and beauty is surely a reminder of the shortness and insignificance of o this life. Every day it is possible to observe this fact E from hundreds of examples around us. An fr intelligent, healthy and famous person, in once a symbol of beauty or success, one o day d appears in newspapers, magazines and on o television with a physical or mental disability. Each one is the clearest evidence ab that th no matter how beautiful, successful or young you are, the inevitable end for huy man m beings is old age. Yet, Y only the body experiences this irreversible process and eventually dies. The v soul, so on the other hand, lives forever. The only asset one can take with him when one o dies is one’s belief or disbelief. The way to avoid eternal punishment, win eternal bliss and attain the good pleasure of Allah is apparent: Before it is too late, have true faith in Allah and spend your life doing good deeds to attain His good pleasure. The writer has authored more than 300 books translated in 73 languages on politics, religion and science.

‘Harper may be gone, but his spirit lingers
By: Dr. Mohamed Elmasry
Millions of Canadians were pleased to be rid of Stephan Harper with the October 19 federal election. After nearly 10 years, they’d had enough of cuts to essential services, lack of commitment to environmental action, the muzzling of government scientists, cancelling of the long-form census, insults to experienced senior officials such as our country’s chief justice, questionable “reward” appointments, the Senate corruption scandal, disregard for Canada’s constitutional values, persistent refusal to communicate transparently with the public, and a long list of other policies that have sent our country back decades in the eyes of the world. But I can argue confidently that no community is more relieved to see the end of the Conservative regime than Canadian Muslims. Adding to a long list of reasons why Harper overstayed his welcome was his blatant exploitation of distrust and hate toward Muslims and Islam in order to gain votes from the fearful and uninformed. Fortunately, his racist politics did not translate into the national votes he expected; unfortunately, the racist
card gained him 8 more Conservative seats in Quebec, for a total of 12. Both before and during the marathon 2015 election campaign, Harper and his supporters tried their utmost to sell the argument that one million Muslims already in our midst are somehow dangerous and un-Canadian. Moreover, we should not trust Muslim refugees from places like Syria to come and live peacefully here either. Traditional political wisdom holds that in a country such as Canada, whose population is predominantly immigrant-based, expressing hatred toward a significant minority and its faith damages your chances to win an election. Nevertheless, Harper and a disturbing number of his party’s most powerful candidates insisted on unapologetically targeting Muslims throughout the campaign. I recall after meeting Stephen Harper in Ottawa when he was a newly elected MP, that I wrote “arrogant” in my journal beside his name. Seven years ago, I journalled about my first meeting with the young Justin Trudeau, writing “good listener.” Both men were among some 100 Ottawa politicians from all parties whom I met over a ten-year period during my time as founding president of the Canadian Islamic Congress. After subsequent meetings with our now-former PM, I also wrote about Harper that; “He subscribes to an extreme ideology but does not show it . . . But MP Stockwell Day has the same extreme ideology, but is open about it. Harper is more dangerous of the two.” Throughout Harper’s reign as Prime Minister, there was no attempt by him or his government to hide a clear anti-Islam bias, which was disappointingly shared by a number of mainstream media, notably the National Post. Instead of challenging and
shaming Harper, the NP was particularly insistent on treating the Conservative antiIslam / anti-Muslim rhetoric as politically acceptable, even more so during the election campaign. Harper’s electoral hate-talk reached its climax when he announced a socalled “barbaric cultural practices” phone tip (snitch) line and proposed on national television that the niqab (woman’s face veil) be banned for all who either dispense or receive public services. Harper may be gone from Canada’s top office, but the far-right media can be counted on to continue supporting his anti-Islam agenda. Witness a recent (October 29, 2015) National Post article headlined “Canada Ran Away: Online Jihadists celebrate Trudeau’s win as they anticipate end to air strikes.” The article states in part that jihadists feel “elation and a sense of triumph at a perceived defeat of Canada over last week’s election results as they anticipate the Liberals’ promised end to airstrikes in Iraq and Syria . . . The Middle East Media Research Institute study said ‘known jihadists’ and supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS / ISIL) were rejoicing at the election of a government committed to halting Canada’s involvement in the international air coalition.” Harper and his advisers knew that propaganda works best when people are most susceptible to its message – fear of the unknown and changing demographics are powerful drivers of prejudice. Take Bill C-24, for example, now law. Personally, I do not object to having one’s Canadian citizenship revoked as an appropriate punishment for very serious crimes. But this should be a prerogative of the courts, not a blunt instrument to be used as Harper did
in blatant efforts to attract anti-Islam voters coast to coast. The recent election campaign also illustrated a disturbing selectivity in Harper’s focus. He generally ignored or dismissed his bias against aboriginals, blacks, and other marginalized Canadian minorities to relentlessly target Islam and Muslims. Propaganda that demonizes an entire faith community has negative consequences on the entire country, especially when reinforced from the top down by a Prime Minister and his governing party. This scenario bears an alarming resemblance to the case of European Jews during the years leading up to the Holocaust. A widespread belief in Jewish plots to take over Europe resulted in their community being treated as alien “others.” Similar animosity has been historically exerted in various parts of the world against other faith groups, such as Catholics. Canada must embrace a “never-again” campaign to protect its Muslims and other marginalized minorities from racist government policies and the politics of hate. It will take a long time for our nation to heal from a decade of damaging majority Conservative rule. But Canada can “thank” Harper for bringing out greater numbers of Muslim voters – along with the youth vote, aboriginal vote, non “old-stock Canadian” vote, and above all, the decent “ordinary Canadian” vote. Now the way is open to embrace a new attitude of healing and change, starting on November 4th with the swearing-in of our new government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Fitting farewell for outgoing President By: Vuniwaqa Bola-Bari A STATE farewell will be accorded today to outgoing President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau as he leaves Government House. The Taukei Naisogolaca will officially leave Government House today as the new President and his former military comrade, Jioje Konrote, is sworn in tomorrow. A statement from Government said the ceremony of farewell would be accorded to Ratu Epeli at the coronation grounds of Government House. Ratu Epeli has been in office since 2009 replacing the late Tui Vuda and president Ratu Josefa Iloilo. When Ratu Epeli left the army, he had attained the rank of Brigadier-General and served as commander of the RFMF. He is married to Adi Koila, the daughter of the late president Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. From 2001 to 2006, Ratu Epeli served as Speaker of the House of Representatives in Parliament. Ratu Epeli was also the chairman of the Parliamentary Appropriations Committee and the House Committee. In 2007, he was appointed interim minister for foreign affairs and external trade and was later moved to the post of interim minister for provincial development
and multi-ethnic affairs in September 2008. In October 2008, Ratu Epeli became indigenous affairs minister “and effectively Great Council of Chiefs chairman”. On April 17, 2009, the interim government appointed him vice-president and in July, he was appointed to the position of acting president. He was sworn in to the position in November of that year. On June 14, 2005, he was appointed the UNAIDS special representative for the Pacific. Ratu Epeli and Adi Koila have two children — Ratu Kamisese and Adi Litia.
PM misses events
FORMER President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has wished Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama a quick recovery after the announcement of his inability to attend the President’s farewell yesterday because of sickness. Mr Bainimarama was notably missing from State events yesterday after he did not attend the Remembrance Day celebrations and the State farewell for President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, whose term has ended. The Attorney-General and Acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum, delivered the PM’s official address at the farewell ceremony and stated that PM Bainimarama could not be part of the event because of his ill health. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, in reading the Prime
Minister’s official farewell address, said Ratu Epeli’s many qualities including his military career where he led by example and hadalways stressed that any reward be based on merit. In his final speech as he departs Government House, Ratu Epeli said “though he (Mr Bainimarama) is not here with us today, but he’s here with us in spirit”. “I trust that he is recovering well in hospital,” Ratu Epeli said. It is understood that Prime Minister Bainimarama was discharged from the Suva Private Hospital at around midday yesterday. Source: The Fijian Times Online

Syrian refugee crisis: Canada strikes committee to fast track resettlement
Liberal government’s 1st priority is to ensure plan is ‘carried out in a humane and expeditious way’
Canada’s minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship says cabinet will form a subcommittee to coordinate government efforts to bring thousands of Syrian refugees to this country.
By: Allan Woods Quebec Bureau, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet is evidence that Canada’s political landscape is evolving. Not many federal cabinets have attracted global attention like the diverse one named by Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week. The decision to name four Sikhs won the new government praise from Burma to Australia to Trinidad and Tobago and many spots in between. But apart from Vancouver, Mississauga, Waterloo and Edmonton — the respective hometowns of Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, Industry Minister Navdeep Bains, Tourism Minister Bardish Chagger and Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi —
“Canadians can and must do more to help Syrian refugees who are desperately seeking safety,” McCallum said Monday during a news conference in Ottawa. “The new cabinet ad hoc committee is our first step towards Canada providing more Syrian refugees with the safe haven they so desperately need.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced Monday the appointment of Malcolm Brown, a top bureaucrat, and the current deputy minister for international development, as special adviser to the clerk of the Privy Council on the Syrian refugee initiative. “This is about showing leadership
pride is probably felt deepest in the Indian state of Punjab, the spiritual home of Sikhs around the world. “This is everywhere,” said Ek Ong Kaur Khalsa, program director of Sikhnet, an Espanola, New Mexico-based website that publishes Sikh-focused news. “This is just going viral.” The obvious object of the world’s interest and envy is Sajjan, the Vancouver gang cop and decorated Afghan war veteran who is currently fending off a bombardment of interview requests as he prepares for his new responsibilities. But the other is that Trudeau’s cabinet now contains more Sikh cabinet ministers than that of India. For longtime political organizers like Brampton Liberal Inderjit Singh Bal, who was hidden away when he first volunteered during the 1979 federal election campaign, the tint of the government’s new executive branch is a sign of how far the country has come. Of that first campaign, in which Liberal
prime minister Pierre Trudeau would lose to Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark, Bal recalled: “(Campaign workers) looked at me and they asked, ‘Can you speak English?’ They didn’t want to send me to the people’s doorsteps to show my face.” A decade later, Bal helped organize an influential delegation of about 285 Sikhs at the Liberal leadership convention that elected future prime minister Jean Chrétien, which paved the way for a historic cabinet appointment when Sikh MP Herb Dhaliwal was elected in 1993. The collective surprise this week that four Sikhs were appointed to cabinet — and the fact that we are still talking about it days later — also shows, however, how far we still have to go, said former Liberal cabinet minister Ujjal Dosanjh, who is himself Sikh. “I’d rather go back to Mr. Trudeau’s comment: ‘It’s 2015. Get with it,’ It’s something that you should expect. If it didn’t happen then you should ask questions,” he said. For Dosanjh, who is retired from politics
and doing what is right as Canadians,” McCallum said of the appointments, less than a week after the new Liberal government was sworn in.
Appointment of four Sikh cabinet ministers shows ‘we have arrived’
and writing his autobiography, the absence of any Chinese-Canadians from the cabinet, despite three Liberal GTA MPs, is a more glaring oversight. None of this debate, though, is enough to wipe the grin off the face of Satwinder Kaur Bains, director of the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. B.C. “It’s a very uplifting time. I feel like we’ve finally arrived and said, ‘Look, we are Canadians. (Sajjan is) defending our country — that says a lot,” she said. But she is also aware that with the Sikh community’s achievement comes great responsibilities — for the four newly minted ministers as well as the million-or-so Sikhs who live in this country. “One is an internal hope because we are so proud and we have this amazing opportunity so let’s make the most of it and let’s make sure the light shines on us and we don’t shy away from the responsibility,” Bains said. cont................. 33 Ways To Keep Kids Active At Any Age As a parent, it can be challenging to help your kids get the physical activity they need every day. Make active play a little easier with these 33 tips from Participants.action Introduce Physical Activity Into Your Child’s Life Early 1. Choose a day care that spends plenty of time outside, in the park or at the playground. 2. Select a preschool or day care within walking distance of your home and leave the car at home every day. You and your child will both benefit from the walk. 3. Take your child to the local playground and encourage him or her to climb, swing and play. Arrange to meet up with friends so it’s fun, active and social for every member of the family. 4. Make use of the programs and facilities offered at your local community centre. 5. Let your child try different sports in ageappropriate classes, such as gymnastics, dance and swimming. 6. Avoid prolonged periods of time where your child is sedentary. 7. Encourage your child to play and explore the outdoors. Be A Good Role Model 8. Your kids are watching you, even when you’re watching TV! Keep TV viewing in moderation. 9. Make sure you live an active life. It’s important that your child sees you running, walking and playing sports. 10. Display a positive attitude that being active is fun and feels good. 11. Teach your kids to make the active choice—avoid the escalator at the mall and the elevator in your apartment building as often as possible. 12. Participate as a family team in a charity run, walk or car wash.
Balance Screen Time With Fun Time 13. Remove TVs and computers from your child’s bedroom. 14. Let your child choose two shows or computer games they can watch or play a day. 15. “After-school” is a key timeslot for kids. School sports teams, active daycare, play dates with a neighbour and community programs all offer great after-school alternatives to screens. 16. Make screen time active time; challenge the family to see who can do the most
push-ups, jumping jacks or leg lifts during commercial breaks. 17. Explain to your kids the importance of outdoor play. Make sure they know decreased screen time is not a punishment. 18. Tell your babysitters when they’re with your kids, screens go off and active, fun time is expected. You’ll Also Love: How To Pack A Backpack For Active Play Sport Participation Is Part Of The Equation 19. Sign your children up for sports groups and teams at the earliest opportunity, so they can start learning important skills. Make sure to keep it fun though. It’s the physical activity that counts – not the competition. Volunteer to help out with your child’s team or club.
20. Show your support and try to attend as many games as possible. 21. Consider walking a few laps around the field or arena with the other parents to get your own hearts pumping. 22. Join adult sports teams and encourage your kids to come and cheer you on at games and tournaments. Family Time Is Fun Time 23. Try an active vacation destination, with a hiking trail or hotel pool nearby. 24. Go for a family walk, bike ride or swim, take karate lessons or learn to throw a Frisbee together, or even challenge the neighbours to a baseball game. 25. Don’t forget that raking, vacuuming and gardening count as physical activity. 26. Do household activities as a family. 27. Build a family physical activity into every weekend. 28. Go for a hike or a bike ride, build a fort in a local wooded park, or play a family game of soccer or football. Physical Activity Is Smart 29. Tell your child’s principal and other parents that physical activity is a priority for you and not a “frill”. Advocate for P.E. classes and active opportunities offered every day. 30. Make sure your child always brings his or her running shoes and is ready to be active at school. 31. Pack your child’s backpack with a baseball glove or skipping rope so recess can be active time. 32. Join the school’s Parent Council and speak up for increased physical education classes and active opportunities offered every day. 33. Suggest seasonal yard days and annual sports play days. Students
in School, Survey Finds By Stephanie Watson Tired…bored…and stressed. High school students from across the country have weighed in on their emotional state in school — and overwhelmingly, they’re unhappy. The survey, called Emotion Revolution, is a joint effort between the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and the Born This Way Foundation, co-founded by Lady Gaga. Its goal: to take the emotional temperature of America’s youth, finding out how kids really feel about the time they spend in school. Through the networking power of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, the survey gathered data from a diverse sample of 22,000 students. Kids were male and female; gay, bisexual, and straight. They represented a cross-section of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The survey started with an openended question: “How are you feeling?” To which most of the students—75 percent— responded with negative emotions. “To me this is a pretty staggering finding,” says Marc Brackett, PhD, the study’s lead author and director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Students noted they were bored in school 70% of the time, and stressed 80% of the time. Kids who’d been on the receiving end of mean or cruel behavior were most likely to feel lonely, hopeless, or afraid. “To me, that’s something we need to think more about,” says Brackett. “What does it mean in terms of our nation’s education system?”Then students were asked how they want to feel in school. Their answers: “Happy, excited, and energized.” The minority of surveyed kids who felt their teachers engaged them in the classroom felt less bored, more respected, and happier.Brackett hopes the survey will empower young people and lead schools to incorporate more social and emotional learning. That type of learning helps kids manage their emotions in better ways to create a more positive learning environment.“We need to close the gap,” he says. “We need to make schools places where all students feel happy, excited, energized, inspired.” Source| WebMD Health News

Sugar Babies: The Rise of ‘Adult Onset’ Diabetes in Children By Mark Hyman, MD
Never before in human history have we seen “adult onset” or Type 2 diabetes in children. There has been a more than 1,000 percent increase in Type 2 diabetes in children over the last two decades. (6) One of the drugs used in the study, Avandia, has been responsible for more than 200,000 deaths from heart attacks since it was introduced in 1999. (7) The Food and Drug Administration has restricted its use. Should we be using this in children? This is pharmageddon. Putting these little children on insulin sooner doesn’t make any sense either. Starting insulin in diabetics is a slippery slope, leading to a cascade of increasing weight gain, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The sugar comes down, but everything else that kills diabetics gets worse. Adult diseases are now commonplace in children. I recently spoke at an Emory University conference on childhood Type 2 diabetes.I met a pediatric gastroenterologist and wondered what he was doing at a conference on diabetes. He told me he now has 5-year-old patients with cirrhosis from fatty liver caused by years of drinking soda. There has been a more than 50 percent increase in strokes in children aged 5 to 14. (8) We are now seeing heart attacks in teenagers and 20 year olds needing cardiac bypass surgery because obesity and diabetes clogs their arteries. This is a disease that is nearly 100 percent preventable and reversible. But it won’t be solved in the doctor’s office, clinic or hospital. It has to be fixed where it begins: in our homes, communities and our society and in our government policies and industry practices. This is a social disease, and we need a social cure. This study should be a national wake-up call. A siren blaring the insanity of our current medical approach to obesity and Type 2 diabetes for both children and adults. When a 5-year-old has cirrhosis and an 8-year-old has a stroke this is not about personal choice or better medication. Now that scientists have proven that fast food and sugar are biologically addictive, we can’t blame the individual or the family. Can a heroin addict just cut down? We need a massive call to action, a national coordinated multi-pronged campaign. We need President Obama and all the Republican candidates to stand before the nation and declare we will end Type 2 diabetes in chil-
dren by the end of this decade, just like President Kennedy mobilized our nation to get a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. The food industry must be held to account. That is more than 29 million a day, or 10 billion servings a year of soda that our government feeds the poor in this country. Then the government pays again through Medicare and Medicaid for obesity- and diabetesrelated illness. Maybe we should call it the “Supplemental Nutrition Obesity Program.” You can’t buy alcohol, cigarettes or prepared meals with food stamp -- why should kids buy soda with them? We can’t ignore or accept this any longer. The food industry blames the victim and tells us we are just lazy, it’s about our sedentary lifestyles. Eat whatever you want, we are told, but just exercise more. You would have to run four miles a day for one week to burn off just ONE fast food meal. That strategy won’t work. You can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet. Moving is important, but changing the food environment is more important. We now have a nation where 75 percent of the applicants for military service are unfit to serve because of obesity. (10) The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and two surgeon generals have called this a national security issue. Childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes also affects our global economic competitiveness because health disparities lead to an achievement gap. As our kid’s waist sizes grow, their brain power shrinks. We need community action and policies to support healthy communities. Since our government, corporations and health care institutions fail to provide solutions, mothers stand arm-to-arm in front of convenience stores to block kids from entering after school. But there are things that can be done. We need a grassroots movement and government policies and programs to change the food landscape and the built environment to give our children a chance to have happy, healthy successful lives. Children with obesity and diabetes live harder poorer lives, they often don’t finish school and earn much less than their healthy counterparts. We may not be able to win the war in Afghanistan, but we can end this. But it will take an approach that works on all the forces
that drive obesity and diabetes in children simultaneously -- at home, at school, in local neighborhoods and communities, in the media, and in corporate regulation and government policies that foster health rather than disease. Here are a few initiatives and ideas that may help shift this frightening tide of poverty and disease: 1. Stop government subsidies for junk food. Stop or reduce subsidies of agriculture products that allow for the glut of cheap, highcalorie, nutrient-poor sugars and fats from corn, wheat and soy into the marketplace. 2. Tax sugar. We should tax sugar (and maybe even processed junk food with added sugars). A one-cent-per-ounce tax would raise $15 billion a year, while a 10-centper-ounce tax could raise $150 billion per year. (11) This could support national food programs and community projects to fight obesity and diabetes and promote health and help cover the hundreds of billions of dollars of health care costs from increasing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The food industry has blocked initiatives for this tax in 30 states by pouring millions of dollars into lobbying and donations, such as the $10 million Coca-Cola gave to a hospital in Philadelphia to swing the vote in the legislature. (12) 3. End junk food marketing to children. We are one of the only countries that allow this. Studies show that the worse the food, the more the marketing. The average 2 year old can recognize and name junk food from their baby carriage in the supermarket. (13) 4. Fund community-based initiatives. Support healthy eating with community kitchens, gardens, and cooking classes that teach how to make good food cheaply. Children
need life skills on how to care for and feed their bodies. We are raising the first generation of Americans who don’t know how to cook. If implemented, the new health care bill and the new Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health provide avenues to support these programs. 5. Provide incentives for grocery stores and farmer’s markets in food deserts and all communities. 6. Make school lunches healthy by providing only real food and modeling healthy eating. Food can be both fun for you and good for you. Create national standards based on sound 21st century nutritional science and common sense. Most schools have only a microwave or deep fryer, hardly the tools needed to feed our children real, fresh food. Any government-supported programs should have strict guidelines for what foods may be served. There is no room for junk food or sugar calories in schools. 7. Change zoning around schools to limit access to fast food and convenience stores. We shouldn’t have to rely on parents blockading junk food stores after school, as a group of parents did in Philadelphia. We shouldn’t make it easy to get bad food! 8. The FDA should regulate sugar as a drug, not as a “GRAS” or generally recognized as safe substance. It is a known toxin and is deadly when consumed in large quantities. What are you doing in your home, your family, in your schools and communities to end the attack on our children and our nation’s future? We have the power to take back our health. It starts with small choices, local action and political advocacy. Now more than ever we have the collective power to change this. Let’s do it for our children’s sake.

Australia’s First Hijab Wearing Muslim Captain and Engineer:
By Mansour Jamal Ibrahim Meet Captain Mona Shindy, Captain of Royal Australian Navy, Chief of Navy’s Islamic Advisor, engineer and fulltime mother. She is one of many prime examples of today’s inspiring role models. Her family migrated from Egypt when she was only three years old and she lost her father at the age of 14. But that didn’t stop her from achieving her goals. From graduating with a degree in weapons engineering to climbing aboard a warship at the age of 23, Captain Mona has shown remarkable effort and dedication. During an interview she explains how she achieved all those things with the help of her faith. How does your faith inform you to be a better person? Our faith and the things that we do as part of our faith, whether it’s honesty or bringing integrity to the table or time to reflect through prayer, all those things really do add value to the actual workforce and actually make you more likely to be successful.” What were the challenges you overcame to get to where you are now? “Finding the way to fit in, into Australian society but still be true to yourself and true to your values and your beliefs. I think that was a significant challenge and still does remain a challenge for all Muslims generally. My personal view on how to overcome that is through constant communication, leading by example and also educating people through engagement and being involved. Being part of it is what helps down break barriers. What amazes you? “I love the fact about how wonderful the miracle of life is. And I’m also amazed by the fragility of life.” What is your favorite word? “My favorite word is yes. The reason I love that word is because I love to help people achieve their goals whenever I can. But I love hearing that word equally. Because when I want to achieve my goals or ambitions in life and someone says yes to a proposal, it’s wonderful to hear that word.”

It is also a statutory holiday in three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) and in six provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador). 6.The national ceremony is held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Governor General of Canada presides over the ceremony. However, in 1954 they changed the name to Veterans Day. The Poppy The Poppy Campaign begins on the last Friday in October and continues through to November 11th. The Lapel Poppy can be worn every day of the Poppy Campaign and is removed at the end of the Remembrance Day ceremony. Many people place their poppy on a wreath or at the base of the cenotaph or memorial as a sign of respect at the end of the ceremony. The poppy may be worn at commemorative events throughout the year, such as anniversaries of significant battles, a memorial service, and other similar occasions. (Event organizers should seek advice from the Royal Canadian Legion on the use of the poppy for events outside of the Poppy Campaign.) The Royal Canadian Legion suggests that the poppy be worn on the left lapel of a garment and as close to the heart as possible. The poppy became widespread in Europe after soils in France and Belgium became
rich in lime from debris and rubble from the fighting during the First World War. These little red flowers also flourished around the gravesites of the war dead. In 1915, John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Artillery, famously made note of this phenomenon in his poem, In Flanders Fields. On Saturday November 9, 1918, two days before the Armistice, Moina Michael was on duty in the reading room at the YMCA Overseas War Secretaries’ headquarters in New York—a place where U.S. servicemen would often gather with friends and family to say their goodbyes before they went overseas. After reading McCrae’s poem, Moina made a personal pledge to always wear the red poppy of Flanders Fields as a sign of remembrance and for “keeping the faith with all who died.” In 1920, Anna Guérin—the French Poppy Lady—attended the national American Legion convention as a representative of France’s YMCA Secretariat. She was inspired by Moina Michael’s idea of the poppy as a memorial flower and felt that the scope of the Memorial Poppy could be expanded to help the needy. She suggested that artificial poppies could be made and sold as a way of raising money for the benefit of orphaned children and others who had suffered greatly as a result of the war. In 1921, Madame Guérin visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association of Canada (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising; which it did on July 5th of that year. Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion’s most important programs. The money raised from donations provides direct assistance for Veterans in financial distress, as well as funding for medical equipment, medical research, home services, long term care facilities and many other purposes.

Loving Yourself !
By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor
TOPICS
some strength which gives you a unique combination nobody else have. Recognize your strengths and build your life around them. 4. Write your success stories One reason we may not like ourselves is we are too focused on what we don’t have that we forget about what we have. So it’s helpful to make a list of your achievements, write your success stories. They do not have to be big things but are a lot of small but important achievements in our life. For example, if you have some good friends and families, that’s your achievement! 5. Stop comparing yourself with others You are unique. You can never be like other people and neither can other people be like you. The way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. Instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. You have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so it’s useless to compare yourself with others. 6. Always be true to yourself You don’t like other people being dishonest to you and similarly you won’t like yourself if you know that you are dishonest to yourself. Whether you realize it or not, that gives your mind a reason not to like yourself! That’s why it’s important to always be true to yourself in whatever you do. Be honest and follow your conscience. shabnam@skcounselling.ca
It is a fact that there are times when we often focus on building relationships with others that we forget the essential first step - that’s being friends to ourselves. It is the crucial first step if we are to have good relationships with others. There are often challenges to have good relationships with others if we don’t even have good relationship with ourselves! 1. Forgive yourself You may have made those mistakes in the past, but is there anything you can do about them? Except learning from them. It’s true that you are not perfect, but neither is anybody else. It’s normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness. 2. Accept things you can’t change There are some things you cannot change, such as your background and your past. So learn to accept them. You will feel much relieved if you treat things you can’t change the way they deserve - just accept them and move on. 3. Focus on your strengths Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. You always have
Turning the Clock Back!
By: Ms. Asma Shams Mortgage Broker
Oh !! How I wish I could turn the clock back. I would have not done this. I would have done or I would have not done such and such thing or I would have definitely acted differently. Alas ! In some countries the clock is set ahead or backwards on coming and going of winter changes the clock. The people in those countries get used to it within a day or two. When the clock of our life changes we are not able to accept that change for years. We are not able to gracefully accept the rule of nature. The people who adopt the changes gracefully and maturely, can deal with the life in a better way. Any changes in our life and our personality have have good or bad impact on us and on our life in general. This can be for shorter or longer period of time. This also affects our family and
our surroundings. What is done is done. In our family when our children are growing they go through different phases of life. Parents also go through different phases of life. What has happened has happened and there is no turning back however, we can improve it or rectify it. When any given point of time, at different situations we have to take certain decisions. We take those decisions as per the requirement and state of the situations. We have to consider the pros and cons which could affect our decisions in longer and shorter runs, gain and loss. By going be by going. Many times we are so much engrossed in analysing our actions that we go deeper in that darkness of depression. It is good to realize ones actions, mistakes etc. But let it not cast a shadow on your present. The decisions we took were right at that time at least we felt so. So, fine, gone, done.. over. Past is like a backside of our dress. It is very well there but behind.
The operation of heart is called bypass because ???? If it is successful, you pass otherwise bye !!! Sensex is high gold and properties are not affordable so. Invest in relationships, feelings and friendships guaranteed good returns

Hafeez hundred secures Pakistan victory
Mohammad Hafeez was a dominant figure during Pakistan’s Test series victory against England and he was to the fore once more, striking an unbeaten century as they took the opening ODI in Abu Dhabi by six wickets with 6.2 overs to spare. Much of the work had been done earlier by a strikingly disciplined and energetic display in the field by Pakistan, who limited England to 216, at least 50 runs under par, before Hafeez settled in on a sluggish, largely unresponsive surface to register his 11th one-day hundred and ensure the victory his side craved as a send-off for Younis Khan after his abrupt announcement on the morning of the match that he would retire from ODI cricket that same evening. So Younis has his farewell victory. His final ODI innings - we can only assume it must be so, although in Pakistan cricket you never can tell - was a laboured affair - 9 in 18 balls before he came to grief with an ugly pull to mid-on. No matter: he got the bat waves of acknowledgment to cheering spectators, the hastily assembled guard of honour from smiling team mates, and ultimately he got the victory. After being dropped during the World Cup, he probably felt entitled to a departure with all the trimmings. Upon his dismissal, at 41 for 3, Pakistan knew that the game remained in the balance, Reece Topley’s heavily-inked leftarm, in his first overseas ODI, having found some inswing to claim all three wickets. They were an interesting trio, kicked off by the captain Azhar Ali and a failed pinch hitter in Bilal Asif, both of them falling lbw. It could have been worse for Younis - Topley almost got him lbw first ball only for Younis to get a bit of bat on it. After 264 ODIs he probably felt entitled to a bit of fortune. Pakistan dispensed with England 2-0 in the Test series and after restricting England to 216 in Abu Dhabi they would have been confident midway through the first ODI of carrying their success forward into a different format, so giving Younis Khan the retirement send-off they craved on the day he
abruptly announced his international retirement. England were purring along at 147 for 3, with Eoin Morgan and James Taylor having recovered an early collapse with a stand of 133 in 27 overs, but wickets then clattered for a second time against disciplined bowling and alert fielding. Morgan and Taylor made 136 runs between them; the rest of England’s top 7 made 18. Morgan could at least draw personal encouragement from his first appearance - the practice match against Hong Kong apart - since he was concussed when he was struck on the head by the Australia quick Mitchell Starc at Old Trafford at the tail-end of the English season. Wearing additional protective flaps on his helmet, he looked in excellent order in making 76 from 96 before he drove at an offspinner from Shoaib Malik that turned slightly and edged to the wicketkeeper. Taylor, too, could take satisfaction from the stand, but that sensation changed after Morgan’s dismissal. Jos Buttler, desperately hoping for a change of fortune, was run out second ball, for 1, when Taylor forced him into a push-and-run single to midwicket, leaving the wicketkeeper with time to sweep up Azhar Ali’s slick pick up and throw. With a pressing need to remedy his miscalculation, Taylor then fell for 60 when
he chipped Malik to short midwicket. Taylor would have faltered even earlier than that had Pakistan not deliberated beyond the stipulated 15 seconds before unsuccessfully requesting a review for an lbw appeal by Malik which replays showed was hitting leg stump. England’s start was a rocky one: three wickets down for 14 with the innings only 3.1 overs old. Growing attention is being given to Jason Roy’s crooked defensive technique, but it was also an excellent delivery from Mohammad Irfan that seemed to beat him for pace and rattled his off stump. Joe Root logged England’s second duck when he fell lbw to Anwar Ali - he spent England’s review as well, in the mistaken belief that the ball was missing leg - and Alex Hales became Anwar’s second wicket when Younis held a juggling catch at slip. It was not long before Morgan indicated that there were no after-effects from Starc’s blow, but he did get off the mark in fortunate fashion when he pulled languidly at a ball from Irfan and happily accepted the award of four runs off his forearm. Surprisingly, even on such a slow surface, Pakistan’s captain, Azhar, did not bring on Wahab Riaz earlier than planned with instructions to fire in a few short ones. Indeed, more attention focused not on Morgan, but
on the confrontation between Irfan, at 7ft tall, and James Taylor, around 18 inches shorter. Add the additional height of his arm and he was receiving a delivery from more than three feet above his head. In Game of Thrones terms, it might not quite have been Tyrion Lannister vs Mag the Mighty, but it was not far short, and a near beamer from Irfan just added to the challenge. Height differences aside, Taylor joined Morgan in confidently realigning the England innings, both of them using their feet confidently against the spinners. Morgan prospered predominantly on the off side, but his full range was evident and his decision to sit out the end of the England county season looked a wise one. When Taylor quickened towards his fifty with straight sixes against Bilal Asif and Malik in turn, England must have had hopes for 280, but those sixes were also an indication of England struggling to tick along quite as effectively as the ball aged and from that point - an expanse of 21.4 overs - they managed only one more boundary. Even that was a full toss from Yasir Shah which Chris Woakes gratefully despatched. England bat deep and, when Buttler and Taylor followed, they needed to. There was no response from Moeen Ali, who fell to a scintillating diving catch at straight midwicket by Babar Azam to bring Yasir his only wicket, nor from Adil Rashid, who tried to whip Irfan through the leg side and only reached mid-on. David Willey, who has opened the batting in limited-overs cricket at county level, could reflect that he at least had nearly 10 overs at his disposal as he came out at No 10. His partnership with Woakes of 33 in eight overs was England’s second highest of the innings, but it was a painful affair, boundaries seemingly belonging to a different world and Willey’s end, slogging desperately at Irfan, told its own story.
