They noted the successful talks on terrorism and security related issues in Bangkok by the two National Security Advisers and decided that the security advisers will continue to address all issues connected to terrorism. Pakistan assured the Indian side that the government is taking steps being to expedite the early conclusion of the Mumbai trials. The dialogue process, which will start as soon as foreign secretaries agree on a schedule, will include matters related to peace and security, Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, Wullar Barrage, Tulbul Navigation Project, economic and commercial cooperation, counter-terrorism, narcotics control and humanitarian issues, people to people exchanges and religious tourism. Nothing can benefit Afghanistan more immediately than full and direct access to India’s markets to enable it to take advantage of the zero-duty regime She also conveyed India’s willingness to join the AfghanistanPakistan trade and transit agreement. The Indian foreign minister singled out terrorism as the biggest deterrent to progress and peace in Afghanistan and said India was ready to help Afghanistan strengthen its defence. The national security advisers of Pakistan and India met for a brief and unannounced meeting in Bangkok last week, which was followed up by an informal and short meeting between the prime ministers of Pakistan and India.

Canadian politicians condemn Donald Trump for plan to stop Muslims from entering U.S.

Canadian politicians have given a thumbs down to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his pitch to ban Muslims from travelling to the U.S. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said someone in his position should not comment on the domestic politics of another country, especially when an election race is underway. But he said Canadians know exactly where he stands on these issues. The incendiary remark sparked outrage

around the world, especially among Muslims, and in Toronto and Vancouver there were calls to remove Trump’s name from office towers. Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose dismissed the comments as “ridiculous.” “It’s up to the people of the United States to choose who their leader is or up to people in his party, but I’m sure by and large even people in his party think his comments are ridiculous,” she said. Trump has frequently been condemned for his comments about women and religious and ethnic minorities throughout his campaign, and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair suggested it might be time to turn the table. “I say we should limit access to Canada for people who are spouting hatred, and we should make sure Donald Trump stays out of Canada,” he said. Maryam Monsef, the minister of democratic institutions, said Trump’s comments make her even more proud and grateful to live in a country like Canada. “As a Muslim, as a woman, as a Canadian, as a young person, every time someone makes a comment that is exclusionary and prejudiced, it is disappointing and somewhat unnerving,” she said. Taliban attacks heavily fortified Kandahar airport

At least 14 people and nine Taliban fighters have been killed after an attack on the heavily fortified Kandahar airport compound in southern Afghanistan, officials say. Taliban forces on Tuesday night attacked buildings housing government employees and military bases at the airport, which is used by Afghan, US and NATO military forces. Attackers holed up in a building during the assault took family members of a military officer as hostages. Military officials said Afghan special forces deployed to the scene were moving slowly to retake the airport as any fast movement could cause civilian casualties during the hostage situation. The attack comes as regional leaders are meeting in neighbouring Pakistan to discuss the Afghan conflict. Officials told Al Jazeera that the Taliban fighters used AK-47s and wore military uniforms during the attack, which lasted for several hours. The officials said the homes of Afghan army officials were among those attacked. Nearby businesses were torched. A man who was trapped in a building near the airport told Al Jazeera that residents were told to remain inside and take cover, in case Afghan or US-NATO forces mistook them for Taliban fighters. The incident was the second major Taliban attack in Kandahar within the past 24 hours. Al Jazeera’s Qais Azimy, in Kabul, said that there will be questions asked as to how the Taliban fighters were able to gain access to one

The United Nations urged Jordan on Tuesday to allow in 12,000 Syrian refugees stranded at the border in deteriorating humanitarian conditions and offered to help reinforce security at registration points. The Syrians are fleeing escalating airstrikes on their battered homeland as well as punishments imposed on civilians by Islamic State militants in the north, including forced marriages, beheadings and floggings, it said. The number of refugees at Syria’s remote northeastern border with Jordan, where many are gathering near an earthen wall or berm, has jumped to 12,000 from 4,000 in recent weeks, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said. Human Rights Watch said Jordan was putting many lives at risk by blocking 12,000 refugees, most of whom it said were women and children. “Jordan should stop stranding people in remote border areas for months on end and swiftly screen them in the country’s well-established transit centres,” Nadim Houry, deputy Middle East and North Africa director of HRW, said in the statement. Aid workers and two Jordanian relief officials attributed the sudden rise in refugees at the border to Russian bombing of ISIS-controlled areas in eastern Homs, such as Palmyra, as well as in Raqqa province and city. A Jordanian official declined comment. “It includes elderly people, it includes people who are sick and wounded, it includes children, women and others who are vulnerable and really need help,” UNHCR spokes-

of the most heavily fortified military compounds in the country. On Monday night, Taliban forces stormed a Kandahar police station and engaged in a lengthy firefight in which three police officers and two of the attackers were killed, he said. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks. As the airport assault was still ongoing, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani landed in Islamabad for the “Heart of Asia” regional conference that aims to revive peace talks with the Taliban. The meeting, an annual gathering of Asian and other countries, comes months after the first, inconclusive talks between the Afghan government and the group. “The vision of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan which is in the best interest of the region is far from becoming a reality unless we put an end to financial, logistical and ideological support enjoyed by militants in our region,” Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Hikmat Khalil Karzai told the conference. Pakistani authorities hosted peace talks in early July. But the second round of talks were indefinitely postponed following news of the death of Mullah Omar, the group’s leader. In an audio message released last week, purportedly by Omar’s successor, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, Mansoor said that the Taliban “won’t agree to have peace talks if our demands are not met”. The message also dismissed reports that Mansoor was injured in a gunfight during a gathering of several Taliban figures in Pakistan as “propaganda” aimed at dividing the group. Last month, a breakaway faction of the Taliban elected its own leader, Mullah Mohammed Rasool Akhund, sparking speculation over the unity of the group. The spokesperson of the breakaway faction, Mullah Abdul Manan Niazi, expressed interest in peace talks last month. Violent clashes between the two rival Taliban groups erupted in southern Afghanistan early last month leaving several dead from both sides and confirming the rift. Source: Al-Jazeera

homeowners on which streets and corners will receive the letters. There are dozens of variables that affect sale prices. Cameron Muir, chief economist at the B.C. Real Estate Association, said the higher number of letters being sent to property owners in Burnaby reflects “upward pressure (on the single-detached market there) because of its relative value, compared to some other markets, and as a result, you saw a little stronger increase, likely, in that marketplace.” The finalized assessments, which will be released on Jan. 4, 2016, will reflect values as of July 2015. Many single-family home markets have moved upward very quickly in the months since then, Grant said. For example, a quick scan of 17 comparable west side Vancouver homes — all about 4,000 square feet and on 120-by-33-foot lots, located within an area of six blocks between West 18th Avenue and West 24th Avenue — shows an increase in sale prices of 36 per cent between January and November 2015, to about $2.6 million from about $2 million. Looking at a set of specific examples of typical houses, BC Assessment found the highest percentage change in assessed value for a single-family home on a 33-foot lot in East Vancouver. Built in 1983, the property rose 28 per cent in assessed value, to $1.267 million in July 2015 from $993,000 in July 2014. The most modest increase on BC Assessment’s list of typical homes was found for a single-family home in South Surrey. Built in 1981, it rose 10 per cent to $789,000 from $716,000. By comparison, values in the rest of the province are “less dramatic,” in the zero- to 10-per-cent range. Typical strata residential increases saw rises in the five- to 10-per-cent range. All our noble sentiments are attached to this honored month which is first among all months. Every year we welcome the month like lovers who have been waiting the whole year for a reunion. The month brings us to the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet, pbuh, the model for mankind and the seal of the messengers. We always say that though the study of his life and works are required at all times, they are particularly significant on his birth anniversary. While all countries celebrate their national days every year, the month and day on which the leader of mankind and best of God’s creations was born is entitled to be commemorated in a fitting manner. It should be done by mutually reminding ourselves of his deeds and being familiar with his qualities so that our love for him becomes deep-seated in our hearts. We should renew our allegiance to him, discuss his teachings and make sure that we follow in his footsteps. In the words of the Holy Qur’an, “All that We relate to you of the stories of the apostles — with it We make firm your heart, in them there comes to you the truth, as well as an exhortation and

a message off remembrance to those b h who h believe.” (Chapter: Hud, Verse: 120). By following the Holy Prophet, pbuh, we will achieve God’s love and mercy. God says in His Book: “(Muhammad) says: If you love God follow me, God will love you and forgive your sins, because God is Oft-forgiving and Most Merciful.” (Chapter: Al Imran, Verse: 31). Following the footsteps of the Holy Prophet, pbuh, and implicit obedience to him carries us to a point of perfection in which our love for him exceeds our love of self or our love of anyone else. He said: “None of you believe until you love me more than your wealth, your sons, yourself or any other people or things.” Then only will we be able to love for the sake of God, hate for the sake of God and sacrifice to win the love of God. Every virtuous deed we do is with the hope of getting reward from God. By performing acts that bring us closer to God, we reach a stage where we can be in the company of the Prophet, pbuh, in Paradise and view God’s face which is the ultimate bliss. And that is the goal we yearn for. Of the Prophet, the best of all mankind, God described in the Holy Qur’an: “You have an exalted standard of character.” (Chap-

Though Thh h there h is i disagreement on the date on which the Prophet, pbuh, was born, there is no dispute over the fact that he was born on Monday. Therefore, Monday has a special significance. We Muslims must thank Merciful God for guiding us to the true religion and including us in the community of Muhammad, pbuh. It is our duty to translate our thanks to God in virtuous deeds, and express our joy over God’s special mercy in sending the Prophet, pbuh, to us. Almighty God said in the Holy Qur’an “We sent you not but as a mercy for all creatures.” (Chapter: The Prophets, Verse: 107). Though we should always practice virtuous deeds to enable us to achieve closeness to God, it is most important to do so on special occasions. Does mankind know a more appropriate day than the day of his birth? On this day we should practice more of his Sunnah such as fasting, caring for our kin, feeding the poor, making our spouses and children happy, organizing gatherings to discuss his life and exemplary qualities, seeking forgiveness from those we have wronged and, above all, increase glorification of God. O Allah, send blessings and salutations upon our master, Muhammad, and his family and reward us in both this life and the life after death. O God, send blessings and salutations upon our lord, Muham-

ter: Pen, Verse: 4). It is also stated in the Holy Qur’an that he is the Messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets: “Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Apostle of God, and the Seal of the Prophets. And God has full knowledge of all things.” (Chapter: Confederates, Verse: 40). “You are the first one on whom Almighty God and angels began sending His blessings and ordered the Muslims to do so. God and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O ye that believe send your blessings on him and salute him with all respect.” (Chapter: Confederates, Verse: 56). The recital of the prayers to send blessings on the Prophet, pbuh, is an act of boundless reward. Most Merciful God has been gracious enough to lead us out of darkness into light. This has been referred to in the Holy Qur’an: “He it is Who sends blessings on you, as do His angels, that He may bring you from the depths of darkness into Light, and He is full of mercy to the believers.” (Chapter: Confederates, Verse: mad, and illuminate our hearts and enno43). ble our minds both in this life and in the O God, send your blessings and salutations life after death. to our master, Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those who will follow him until the Day of Judgment.

By: Association of Islamic Charitable Projects B Praise i be b to Allah, All h the h Lord d off the h Worlds, ld and may He raise the rank and the honor of our Master Muhammad, the virtuous, the trustworthy, his kind Al and Companions; and may Allah protect his nation from what he fears for them. Allah the Exalted said in the Qur’an: 33. AL AHZAB:45

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu inna arsalnaka shahidan wamubashshiran wa natheeran This means: “O Prophet! Indeed We have sent you as a witness, and as a bearer of good tidings, as a warner, and as a summoner to God, by His command, and as an enlightening guide.” On the twelfth Rabi^ ul-‘Awal of every year, an aromatized fragrant anniversary shines over the whole world. The anniversary of birth of our Master Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. His birth was on a Monday in the month of Rabi^ ul ‘Awal in the Year of the Elephant. Dear Muslims, the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam is among the greatest endowments granted to us. While it is true that we usually thank Allah ta^ala for the apparent and the nonapparent endowments; yet among that is greatly thanking Allah for sending Prophet Muhammad, whom Allah guided us with his message and enlightened us to follow his

A th many ways off th k M li Among the thanks Muslims pursue to embellish and honor their Great Prophet is to hold celebrations in commemoration of the honorable Birth of the Prophet (al-Mawlid ash-Sharif). Muslims commemorate this event all over the world. They who join together for rewardable deeds like recitation from the Qur’an, , telling the story of the Prophet’s birth, teaching Religious Knowledge, chanting Islamic praises driving the hearts to prepare for the Hereafter, and eating. The highly noble and reputable Islamic scholars regarded this matter as a good innovation, since innovations are of two types: an innovation of guidance and an innovation of misguidance. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:“The one who innovates a good innovation in Islam has its reward and the reward of those who would practice with it until the Day of Judgement without lessening the rewards of those who practice with it. The one who innovates the innovation of misguidance, would take the sin for it and the sin of those who practice with it until the Day of Judgement without lessening the sin of those who practice with it” (Narrated by Muslim). What complies with the Qur’an, the Sunnah, the Ijma^ (scholarly consensus), and the sayings and practices of the Companions is

di t the th Qur’an, Q ’ th Sunnah, S h the th Ijma^, Ij ^ and d dicts the the sayings and actions of the Companions is an innovation of misguidance. Knowledgeable reputable Islamic scholars are the ones who are qualified to classify what is considered a good innovation and what is considered a bad innovation. Hence, what they deem to be that of guidance is considered religiously good and what they deem as of misguidance is considered religiously rejected. Commemorating the Memory of the Birth of the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam took place after the first three centuries. The honourable, knowledgeable, and righteous ruler: al-Mudhaffar, the King of Irbil initiated this practice about 900 years ago. This righteous generous king, held a great celebration showing delight and joy for the birth of the best creation and the master of them all, Master Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. The scholars of Islam praised the king and approved his actions. They accepted the celebration, for it does not contradict with the rules of the religion, rather it complies with it. It was and still is deemed to be among the good innovations, and not rejected by the reputable scholars of Islam. Since then and until now, Muslims around the world celebrate and commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad by engaging

May Allah endow His mercy upon him. One should note and be warned about many published books in the name of Mawlid that they are falsely attributed to some scholars, as the one named “Mawlidul ^Arus”. In this book, which is falsely related to Ibn al-Jawziyy, there is an ugly statement that says: “Allah took a handful from the light of His face and told it: “Be Muhammad” so it became Muhammad. This is among the lies about Allah, because nothing resembles Allah in anyway whatsoever. When we call Allah with His name ‘an-Nur” it means that He is the ‘Guide’, the One Who enlightens; the One with Whose Guidance His believers were enlightened. It does not mean that Allah is light. So dear Muslims, celebrate and commemorate the birth of your Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. Show your joy and deligh with it. Attend circle of Knowledge which are being taught by the people of Truth so that you will be guided and enlightened by the Call of our master Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam

12 M I D D L E E A S T Justin Trudeau’s Commitment On Iraq And Syria Safar 29, 1437 December 11, 2015

By: Ms. Wajiha Rasul Canadians, finally, got the change they desired in October 2015 federal elections by electing Justine Trudeau and his Liberal party. Now, the question is will Justine Trudeau be able to keep the promises he made during elections especially regarding Syria, Iraq and NATO alliance. The question is really important to ask in the light of recent Paris Attacks after which world leaders are pushing for strict military actions against Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), also known as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The recent Paris Attacks have presented a difficult challenge for a newly elected Liberal government to fulfill their promise regarding putting an end to Canadian combat in Iraq and Syria. World leaders have started to emphasise the importance of military actions in Syria and Iraq after Paris Attacks. The French President François Hollande stressed while talking to reporters in Moscow, ““We are all concerned by terrorism. Terrorism can strike anywhere, so we have to act.” British Prime Minister David Cameron said “We cannot wait for a political transition. We have to hit these militants in their heartland now…It’s the view of our military, our intelligence experts ... we should take this action as part of the coalition to help make us safer.” American and Russian leaders also agree with French’s Prime Minister Hollande on expanding military action against ISIL. Currently, Canada is also involved in

bombing Syria with its six CF-18 fighter jets. This commitment was made by Canada under Stephan Harper’s Conservative government who promised our allies that CF18 fighter jets will bomb Syria and Iraq till March 2016. During 2015 federal elections Justine Trudeau promised Canadians that he will end Canadian combat in Syria and Iraq by bringing CF-18 fighter jets back home. So far, he seems enthusiastic about fulfilling this promise. After hours into wining federal elections Justine Trudeau informed Barak Obama that he will be pulling out fighter jets from bombing mission. However, the recent Paris Attacks have drawn some criticism on his campaign promise. Under the increasing emphasis by world leaders to increase military action against ISIL Justin Trudeau seem to remain committed on withdrawing CF-18 fighter jets but he has promised to increase military training to troops fighting against ISIL. It is also important to note that according to one National Post report the pace of Canadian airstrikes increased despite Trudeau’s promise of ending the mission. Data taken from Department of Defence website shows that since Nov 4 – Nov 10 CF-18 jets launched five airstrikes against ISIL targets. In a recent press conference Justin Trudeau emphasized, “I made it very clear that it is Canada’s intention to withdraw from the bombing mission but to do it in a way that is responsible and in coordination with our allies…We will have

more to announce in the coming weeks.” Given the timely nature of political processes and the current security challenges against ISIL it is a race against time for Justin Trudeau to keep his promise on withdrawing fighter jets from bombing mission. As far as the question of evaluating his intent to end bombing mission I believe it can be analyzed by looking at his commitment towards accepting 25000 Syrian refugees by the end of this year. Although the goal of accepting 25000 refugees this year is too ambitious but it reflects his good will for serving humanity and embracing peace in every way possible. This can also be seen by looking at Liberal’s policy towards not refusing refugees infected with contagious diseases such as Tuberculosis. Liberal government has announced that they will not refuse such refugees but instead will treat them before allowing them entry into Canada. This means that it will take longer for refugees infected with contagious disease to enter Canada. In regular immigration cases visa/entry is denied to people with infectious diseases. However, Liberal government will be treating Syrian refugees on a special case basis. Another initiative taken by the Federal government is that it will not ask Syrian refugees to pay back the cost of bringing them to Canada. Normally, if a refugee cannot afford to travel and get medically screened for entry in Canada they are offered a loan. The cost of the loan is covered by federal im-

migration loans program. Refugee taking a loan is required to pay it back with interest. Toronto Metro reported “Ottawa has confirmed that it will not ask displaced migrants from war-torn country to pay back the cost of bringing them to Canada.” It shows Justin Trudeau’s commitment towards fulfilling his election campaign promises. Although his goals are a bit too ambitious such as accepting and processing 25000 refugee applications this year and pulling back six fighter jets from Syria and Iraq before March 2016 but it shows his willingness to work for humanitarian cause. This will also increase Canada’s involvement on international scale which significantly declined under Stephane Harper’s government. Nevertheless, it is important to note that it is an extremely sensitive time for Justin Trudeau to prove that he is the change which Canadians voted for.

Candian Federal Ministers concluded a very successful visit to Jordan The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan Minister of National Defence, The Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health and Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Refugees, concluded a very successful visit to Jordan. The Ministers made this trip to experience first-hand the situation on the ground, as the Government of Canada implements its commitment to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada. To provide a sense of the daily lives of refugees, Ministers visited Za’atari refugee camp, located outside of Amman, Jordan, which is home to approximately 80,000 refugees. The Ministers toured the camp and had the opportunity to speak with a number of Syrian refugees who have been displaced for many months and in some cases years. The Ministers attended the opening of the new Syrian refugee processing centre in Amman. Here, they met with both refugees and Canadian officials responsible for processing refugees, and reviewed the interview and screening process.

14 L O C A L BC Muslims Raise more than $300,000 for the Syrian Refugees Safar 29, 1437 December 11, 2015

TheThe Syrian refugee crisis is the worst since World War II, millions have fled their homes to escape the war in their country. On Dec 6, people from All BCMA chapters in lower mainland, many local mosques, Muslims and non Muslims religious and community organizations, Islamic schools, and the business community gathered at India Banquet Hall Surrey to reach the target of $300K for this noble cause. Mr. Irfan Sheikh was the master of ceremony. He explained that the purpose of gathering was to raise funds for 2500 Syrian Refugees who are expected to arrive soon in our beautiful BC. He invited many speakers at podium to motivate everyone for giving generously. Burnaby Masjid Imam Yahya Momla after recited the verses of Quran and narrated few Haidths explained the concept of Jihad in the light of sayings of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and quoted “Somebody who did the holy struggle to save the children, widows in wars is a Mujahid.” . “You and I we will be proof to be part of this jihad to help the orphans”, said Imam Momla. BCMA President Mr. Daud Ismail said , thanked all Muslim and non Muslim organizations, MPs, MLAs and all distinguished guests on behalf of BCMA. It shows our love for all human beings. A committee has been established to help the Syrian refugees which will coordinate with the Government agency and the refugees. MP, Randeep, Sarai, MP Sukh Dhaliwal , MLA, Sue Hammell, Bruce Ralston, and Harry Bains also assured their fully cooperation at all stages with coming refugees in their City of Surrey and some also offered personal donations. MP Fleetwood-

Port Kells Mr. Ken Hardie showed his support by donating $1000. Mr Shawkat Hassan the VP of social services BCMA shared his 20 years experience as a Palestenian refugee since 1951, and shared his story about how one Abbotsford resident helped him to come to Canada. “I am proud of members of BCMA for serving Syrian refugees, and request you to help in cash, furniture and food as much you can”, said Mr. Hassan. At the end Mr. Sheikh requested the Imam of Surrey Jameh Masjid Qari Abdul Wahab to move forward and do his best to motivate the crowd in donating towards the target. Qari A.Wahab recited few verses of Quran and narrated few Haidths. He said that Islam is a very peaceful religion, which teaches us peace, harmony, brotherhood and equality. There is no room in Islam for terrorism, violence, and for killing of innocent people. We strongly condemn any terrorism activities. Today we are here to show the world that we are Canadian, does not matter I put scarf on my head or tie turban, have a long, short or no beard, we are all Canadians. We are all united against this evil force. Canadians are generous people, and the Canadian Government has already committed to bring 25000 Syrian refugees in Canada. At the end Allhumdulillah, all attendees, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, the evening ended with more than $300K raised for the cause. There is still a lot more work ahead as we welcome these refugees in our country and all organizations will be counting on your support, whether it’s through money, food and clothing donations, or volunteering time to provide support for the refugees.

Air Commodore Zafar Masud and the Separation p of East Pakistan

By Nasim Yousaf

December 16, 1971 was a dark day in Pakistan’s history. On this day, Pakistan lost its east wing (now Bangladesh). The 1971 war and the separation of Pakistan’s two wings could have been avoided if then President of Pakistan, General Yahya Khan, had followed the advice of Air Officer Commanding, Air Commodore M. Zafar Masud, then the top Pakistani Air Force officer in East Pakistan. Air Commodore Masud was a highly respected, brilliant fighter pilot. He was widely regarded as a potential future Chief of Air Staff for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). In 1965, as Base Commander of PAF Base Sargodha (now PAF Base Mushaf), Masud became a war hero for his outstanding performance in the 1965 war with India. The pilots under his command, inspired by Masud’s courage and the tactical training he imparted, performed brilliantly during the war; these pilots included: the legendary M.M. Alam, Sarfaraz Ahmed Rafiqui, Munir-ud-Din Ahmed, Alauddin Ahmed, Yunus Hussain, Mervyn L. Middlecoat, Cecil Chaudhry, Aftab Alam Khan, M. Anwar Shamim, Syed Saad Akhtar Hatmi, Syed Nazir Ahmed Jilani, Yusuf Ali Khan, and Jamal A. Khan. In April of 1970, Masud was sent to Dhaka as the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) commander of the East wing. Masud arrived in Dhaka during a particularly trying time for the nation, as there was ongoing political turmoil and strife between the East and West wings of Pakistan. To provide a bit of background, during the general election of 1970, the Awami League political party (led by Sheikh Mujibur Rehman) had won the majority of seats in the National Assembly (NA). But President Yahya and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (Founder of the Pakistan People’s Party) were not in favor of Mujib emerging as Head of the Government. Yahya was concerned that if Mujib became the Prime Minister, then Yahya would have to relinquish the Presidency. Meanwhile, Bhutto, whose party had won the majority of seats in West Pakistan, was concerned that Mujib’s strong showing in the election would block his own path to becoming Prime Minister. Therefore Bhutto stated, “Udhar Tum, Idhar Hum” (“You rule there, we rule here”). Dawn (March 15, 1971) newspaper wrote, “Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto...said in Karachi yesterday that if power was to be transferred to the people before any constitutional settlement... it should be transferred to the majority party in East Pakistan ‘and the majority party here [West Pakistan]’” Bhutto’s statement can be interpreted

THE BOOK (Received Gold Seal Award)

to mean that he wanted a separation of East Pakistan, presumably so that he could become Prime Minister of West Pakistan (he publicly stated that he wanted a united Pakistan, but his actions indicated otherwise). Yahya and Bhutto had a common interest in blocking Mujib from assuming power, and it seemed they were willing to use any means necessary to do so. When people began protesting Government attempts to block Mujib, the Government forcefully suppressed them. Meanwhile, on February 28, 1971, Bhutto demanded a postponement of the previously scheduled National Assembly session in Dhaka (originally planned for March 3, 1971). The purpose of the session was for Assembly members to vote on a new Prime Minister (presumably Mujib). The day after Bhutto’s demand, Yahya announced that the Session would indeed be postponed (Dawn, March 02, 1971); a few days later, he announced a new date of March 26, 1971 for the session. There was no justification for this postponement, other than to try to block Mujib from assuming the Prime Ministership. On March 02, 1971, Mujib issued a statement deploring the postponement of the Assembly session and called for a public strike across the whole of East Pakistan (Pakistan Times, Lahore, March 03, 1971); the Bengalis observed the strike. The Government again responded to demonstrations with brutal force and violent suppression. The Government’s strategy of trying to resolve a political issue with force was causing great dissension within its ranks. On March 01, 1971, Vice-Admiral Syed Mohammad Ahsan (Governor and Unified Commander of the Pakistan Armed Forces in East Pakistan), who was not in favor of using force, resigned in protest of Yahya and the Government’s handling of the situation in East Pakistan. Ahsan was replaced (on the same day, March 01, 1971) by Lieutenant General Sahabzada Yaqub Khan (Pakistan Times, March 02, 1971). Four days later (March 05, 1971), Yaqub Khan also resigned for the same reasons as Ahsan. Air Commodore Masud was then appointed as the Unified Commander of Pakistan Armed Forces in East Pakistan. Meanwhile, Lt. General Tikka was appointed as the Governor and Martial Law Administrator, Zone B. The situation in East Pakistan was now reaching a boiling point, but the Government continued using force to suppress protestors. On March 7th, in a public speech Mujib called for independence from West Pakistan, although still leaving the door open for negotiation.

Despite the precarious situation, Yahya still had not realized the gravity of the circumstances. He didn’t bother to visit Dhaka to review the situation firsthand and try to resolve it. Masud was unhappy with the way President Yahya was handling the political turmoil. He felt that the uprising in East Bengal could not be suppressed through guns or violent means. Masud and others convinced Yahya to travel to Dhaka on March 15, 1971. Finally, Yahya arrived in Dhaka and held a meeting at the President’s House along with Masud and top brass from the Pakistani Army.During the meeting, Air Commodore Masud briefed Yahya and the attendees of the meeting on the complexity and seriousness of the situation. Masud told President Yahya: “The situation is very delicate. It is essentially a political issue and it needs to be resolved politically, otherwise thousands of innocent men, women and children will perish.”Yahya replied, “Mitty, I know it…I know it…” Air Chief Marshal Jamal A. Khan further wrote in an article entitled, “Mitty Masud folds his wings” (Dawn, Karachi on October 13, 2003): “Air Commodore Masud… for well over an hour gave a candid, fact-filled evaluation of the civil-military environment. He forcefully argued that the turmoil in East Pakistan could never be resolved with military force...” Masud thus apprised President Yahya of the grave situation and explained the consequences of using violence to suppress the people, recommending a political solution instead. While in Dhaka, Yahya also held meetings with Mujib and on March 22nd a joint meeting with Mujib and Bhutto. But nothing fruitful came out of these meetings. To further block Mujib, Yahya once again, on March 22nd, announced a postponement of the National Assembly session without giving any rescheduled date (Pakistan Times, March 23, 1971). Instead of coming up with a political solution to the situation in East Pakistan, Yahya and the top brass in the Pakistan Army decided to intensify their efforts against the Bengalis with the power of their guns. Prior to his departure for Karachi from Dhaka, Yahya issued orders to launch full-fledged, immediate army action. At Dhaka airport, Masud spoke to the President and again reminded him of the repercussions of using force. Nevertheless, General Tikka followed President Yahya’s order and, on the night of March 25-26, 1971, launched an aggressive military operation to suppress the Bengali uprising. The military also arrested Mujib. Prior to his arrest, Mujib issued a declaration of Bangladesh’s independence:

“History of the Muslims of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Their Organizations: Islamic Assocition, Canadian Council of Muslim Women, Muslim for Peace and Justice ‘A Cultural Integration’ ”

“The book reads best as a reference volume, primarily consisting of photos and photo copied letters, newspaper articles and documents. … The book admirably highlights the intention of thisimmigrant group to integrate into local AVAILABLE Locallysociety, while sustaining Contact: email: hmr.1903@telus.net critical aspects of culture Te l : 7 7 8 . 8 5 6 . 0 6 0 0 and religion.”by US Review Or www.amazon.com/books

“This may be my last message; from today Bangladesh is independent. I call upon the people of Bangladesh wherever you might be and with whatever you have, to resist the army of occupation to the last. Your fight must go on until the last soldier of the Pakistan occupation army is expelled from the soil of Bangladesh. Final victory is ours.” At this juncture, Tikka asked Masud for AirForce support; this was an incredibly difficult decision for Masud. He could see the ground reality that launching a ruthless and barbaric Air Force operation to massacre Bengali civilians would clearly lead to the separation of East Pakistan. So, Masud took what he felt was the only moral and honorable course of action: in the interest of saving Pakistan and avoiding a massacre of the Bengalis, Masud decided not to comply with Tikka’s demand. He sacrificed his brilliant career in the PAF for the future of the nation and its people. On March 26, 1971, Masud handed over command to Air Commodore (later Air Marshal) Inam-ul-Haque Khan. Masud traveled to West Pakistan, where he was offered another assignment, but he refused and resigned from the Pakistan Air Force. Upon his resignation, the media attempted to obtain his views on East Pakistan and the reasons for his resignation, but Masud was barred from commenting (His views are not available in the published Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report. It is unknown whether Masud’s statement was recorded and omitted from the published report or if it was not recorded at all). Meanwhile, in early April of 1971, Lieutenant General A. A. K. Niazi was sent to East Pakistan and took over from Tikka. With each day passing the situation deteriorated further. Towards the end of 1971, India intervened, and in December of 1971 a full-fledged war between Pakistan and India began. The Pakistan army ultimately lost the war and on December 16, 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent country. Masud’s refusal to comply with the army operation showed incredible foresight. While the overall separation movement had begun right after the creation of Pakistan (see additional details in the book entitled “Air Commodore M. Zafar Masud: A Pioneer of the Pakistan Air Force”), perhaps the parting of East Pakistan in 1971 could still have been avoided, had the leadership listened to Masud and others who were against military action. Masud’s heroic and principled stand is commendable; he sacrificed a promising career in support of what he felt was right for the people and the country. He is – and will remain – a true hero of the Pakistan Air Force. www.facebook.com/AirCommodoreMZafaMasud The author has published 15 books and compiled many rare documents.

Volunteering is an opportunity to change lives, including your own. If you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by the news of a disaster, volunteering to help can be a great

If you have more than one thing you love, find a way to combine the two. For example, if you love kids and are great at arts and crafts, visit your local children’s hospital and offer to lead art activities for young patients. Find What Fits Your Schedule Once you’ve found something that inspires you, decide how much time you want to spend. Local organizations (like hospitals or shelters) often like volunteers to give them a set amount of time every week or two. But what if school, sports, or other commitments prevent you from devoting time every week? Many large organizations (especially those related to the environment or finding cures for diseases) have day-long activities. These include walkathons, bike rides, cleanup days, or building homes for those in need. You can also spend a week, month, or even a whole summer volunteering through a structured internship or “alternative spring break” program. 10 B ody Language Mistakes

To Avoid in an Interview

Amman- Shaden Abdulraman , Body language can betray you in a job interview if you’re not aware of how your body acts or reacts without your consent. From eye contact to arm touching, here are a list of 10 body language mistakes to avoid in your next job interview: 1. Bad Posture Leaning back is lazy or arrogant, leaning forward is aggressive and slouching is just lazy. Instead, sit tall and straighten your back as much as possible. 2. Crossed Arms According to psychology crossing arms often signals defensiveness and resistance. Open your arms at your sides to appear approachable and receiving. This will put your interviewer at ease and make them feel comfortable communicating with you. 3. Hands Behind Back Clasping hands behind the back may signal resistance and could mean to the other person that you’re hiding something. It’s important that you appear open and approachable so don’t try to control your body gestures by keeping your hands still behind your back. 4. Pointing Pointing and excessive hands movement results in invading the other person’s space

aggressively. You certainly don’t want that to happen in an interview. 5. Breaking Eye Contact Don’t stare, but try to hold your interviewers gaze for one extra second before breaking away. Do this especially at the beginning when you introduce yourself and shake hands with the interviewer. 6. Excessive Nodding Many people nod a lot during interviews out of anxiety and their desire to appear agreeable and friendly. Nod once or twice with a smile of agreement but don’t over do it or you will appear nervous, silly or trying too hard. 7. Fidgeting Stop fidgeting. It distracts your interviewer and you definitely want them to focus on what you have to say not on your moving hands or the sound of coins jingling in your pocket. 8. Unwanted facial expressions It is crucial for your facial expressions to match your tone. If you want to express your enthusiasm for working at the company but your facial expressions convey that the mere idea of that is torturing you, forget about being hired. 9. Shifty Eyes Distracted or upward eye movements can suggest someone is lying or not sure of themselves. It’s important to look someone directly in the eye to convey confidence and certainty. 10. Staring While it’s important to be confident and look the interviewer in the eye, you have to break away. Locking eyes with someone for an extended period of time can be interpreted as aggressive, not to mention creepy.

Pakistani Film “Dukhtar” sponsored by PCWS received best international film award at VISAFF

By: Shahnaz Rahman and Babra Rana Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society was the proud sponsor of the Fifth Annual Vancouver South Asian Film Festival. The festival was held at the Simon Fraser Woodwards Art Centre. The main intent of the festival was to promote diverse stories of South Asians through films from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Nepal. A Pakistani film “Dukhtar” was officially selected for VISAFF 2015 and ended up being awarded the best film award at the festival. The festival organizing committee invited Consul General Mohammed Tariq to present this film at

the festival from November 27th to November 29th, 2015. The word Dukhtar, means daughter, which is reflective of the focus of the film, the relationship between a mother and her daughter, and the lengths that a mother would go to protect her child. This film is about interrupting cycles of intergenerational oppression. It is about addressing the gender inequality that pervades every society, and in this story in particular, in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society believes that art and film can be an effective medium where social issues can be made accessible, where a story or a narrative can be made into a message

to create change. In 1941 the founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah said in a speech that “no nation can rise to the height of glory unless [its] women are side by side” that “we are victims of evil customs”, and that “it is a crime against humanity that our women are shut up in the four walls of the house as prisoners”. While the lives of Pakistani women have changed in the past thirty years, we are still a long way away from empowerment and emancipation. As Pakistani Canadians, we must educate others and ourselves on these issues and not be shy in being critical towards our country and our communities. Photos courtesy of Aziz Ladha

23 3 WOMEN 3 TOPICS Keep Yourself Happy ! B a i s i n K a d h i P a k o r a Safar 29, 1437 December 11, 2015

By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor One of the most important keys to a better life is to keep yourself happy, rather than always living to please everyone else. It’s easy to take on a false sense of responsibility, thinking that it’s your job to keep everybody happy, to “fix” this person, to rescue that person or to solve another person’s problem. Certainly, it is noble and admirable to want to help as many people as possible, and it is always good to reach out to others in need. Too often, though, we get out of balance. At the end, we’re doing everything for everybody else, but we’re not taking any time to keep ourselves happy or healthy. Often it is seen that when we try to keep everybody around us happy by trying to meet all their needs, we are the one’s who ends up suffering. Remember that you should not sacrifice your happiness to keep someone else happy. It may sound a little selfish but there’s a tenuous balance here. Your first priority is to take care of yourself. To do so, you must recognize that some people are still not going to be happy no matter what you do for them. no matter how nice you are and no matter how much time and energy you give them. They have their own issues to deal with or things inside that they need to resolve. This does not mean that you are being selfish or self-centered. We should be givers. There’s a big difference between giving and allowing someone to control you and make you feel guilty until you do what he or she wants. Once again you should not be unhappy simply to keep someone else happy. Again, if you are allowing that, the other person is not the

o n l y one at fault. Y o u m a y h a v e taken on a false sense of responsibility and now are allowing another person to control you. If you are in a relationship where you do the majority of the giving and always encourage or rescue the other person, that is a clear indication that something is out of balance. You have to make some changes otherwise the relationship will continue to flounder. You must take a stand. You can do it but you need to go to the right person and say,”I care about you, but I’m not going to allow you to keep dumping your problems on me and making my life miserable. I’m not going to let you keep draining all my time and energy. You have to take responsibility.” Remember - You are responsible for keeping yourself happy!! For More Info:shabnamsk@hotmail.com

Fragile Handle with Care:

By: Ms. Asma Shams , Mortgage Broker

When we cargo delicate stuff or something made of glass, we have to handle fragile things very carefully. Our hearts and minds are like moving cargos- more fragile than glass or anything delicate. How would we feel if every single minute, whether we are walking or sitting or doing any work, we have to be careful as if we are using very delicate things? Imagine it to be more soft than a petal of a flower or more fragile than crystal. Scary and troublesome isn’t it? We all are doing so, every day, and do not know or realize the fragile state of mind of people around us as well. Every now and then, we hear news of bombing, killing, senseless murders, rape, cheating, and big powerful people interfering with small weak people. Furthermore, people who are at an high post, or at an authoritative position are misusing their autonomy and behaving in a selfish and prejudiced manner. The weak are becoming weaker and all types of frustrations are creeping in. STOP – STOP – STOP – For humanity! This sin city is made of human beings, so why does a human behave differently from goody norms that he or she has been taught since birth? A child is not downloaded from the computer. He or she is made with flesh and blood, DNA and genes of their parents. He or she was not given the choice of parents or religion.

However advance we become in technology, still we cannot experiment to make one particular child be born in a different household and study what happened. Whether we believe in God or not, one thing is certain that nobody knows how a life enters or leaves the body. One moment we are full of life and next moment we are finished. Our soul is gone – phew!. We are ruled by two rulers – heart and mind. It is very important to take care of the human being right from the start, before he becomes good or bad. As a result, it is important to remember that the very first contact we have is family. Family plays a vital role in shaping the base, mind-

set and the basic foundation of the beings prejudices etc. Afterwards, as and when we come in contact with outsiders, our opinions and thoughts are affected and even changed. However, if we are brought up with the right upbringing, even though we waiver, we can definitely come back to the right track again. More in coming issues…

As I got a little hole in the pocket, few relationships also fell with the coins. It is very easy to give

example but very difficult to become one.

Bangladesh), officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Burma (Myanmar) to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south. Together with the Indian state of West Bengal, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The name Bangladesh means "Country of Bengal" in the official Bengali language. The borders of presentday Bangladesh were established with the partition of Bengal and India in 1947, when the region became the eastern wing of the newly formed Pakistan. However, it was separated from the western wing by 1,600 km (994 mi) across India. After independence the new state endured famines, natural disasters and widespread poverty, as well as political turmoil and military coups. The restoration of democracy in 1991 has been followed by relative calm and economic progress. Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country and is among the most densely populated countries in the world with a high poverty rate. However, per-capita (inflation-adjusted) The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies. Dhaka, the capital, and other urban centers have been the driving force behind this growth. Geographically, the country straddles the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and is subject to annual monsoon floods and

cyclones. The government is a parliamentary democracy. Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the OIC, SAARC, BIMSTEC, and the D-8. As the World Bank notes in its July 2005 Country Brief, the country has made significant progress in human development in the areas of literacy, gender parity in schooling and reduction of population growth. However, Bangladesh continues to face a number of major challenges, including widespread political and bureaucratic corruption, economic competition relative to the world and an increasing danger of hydrologic shocks brought on by ecological vulnerability to climate change. Exports of textiles, clothing, and ready-made garments (RMG) accounted for 77% of Bangladesh’s total merchandise exports in 2002. By 2005 the ready-made garments (RMG) industry was the only multibillion-dollar manufacturing and export industry in Bangladesh, accounting for 75 per cent of the country’s earnings in that year.Bangladesh’s export trade is now dominated by the ready-made garments (RMG) industry. In 2012 Bangladesh’s garment exports – mainly to the US and Europe – made up nearly 80% of the country’s export income.By 2014 RMG represented 81.13 percent of

Bangladesh’s total export.
