Syria conflict: Dozens killed in suspected Russian strikes At least 43 people have been killed in a series of air strikes believed to have been carried out by Russian planes in the Syrian city of Idlib, according to activists and residents. A marketplace, homes and official buildings were all hit, reports say. Bodies were still being pulled from the rubble, a civil defence worker said. Russia has not confirmed whether it carried out strikes in the area. Russia began an air campaign to bolster President Bashar al-Assad in September. It says it has targeted only “terrorists”, above all jihadist militants from the Islamic State (IS) group, but activists say its strikes have mainly hit Western-backed rebel groups. The Local Co-ordination Committees, a network of anti-regime activists, said that more than 170 people had been injured in the strikes. A coalition of Islamist anti-government rebels captured the city of Idlib earlier this year. It is only the second provincial centre to fall into rebel hands during the conflict, after Raqqa was seized by IS. Their advances in the area pose a threat to the nearby coastal region, which is a bastion of sup-

Elimination of Terrorism, a Huge Challenge
One Year before How can Taliban (students) perceive themselves as Muslims without even knowing how to practise the Quran and Ahadith? In other words, they live and die without proper Islamic knowledge or with little knowledge. In either case, they can’t practise Islam. Hence, they tend to end up as totally confused/the most vulnerable species on the Earth. Because of their naivety, they are up for grab by the anti Islam/anti Pakistan forces (internal or external) for ulterior motives. Secondly, there are those who have nothing to do with Islam except defaming it; they cunningly manage to fake as practical Muslims. It’s evident the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) actually is one of the most dangerous – fully trained for guerilla warfare and armed to teeth “anti-Pakistan groups,” its members chose Dec 16 for a reason: They gave a painful message reminding the nation of crippling Pakistan when it lost its eastern wing in 1971. They carried out the Tuesday bloodshed, the most inhuman heinous crime against the innocent children of an army Public school on Warsak rd Peshawar. According to sources, the TTP spokesperson vowed more such militant attacks and told Pakistani civilians to detach themselves from all military institution, adding: “We are still able to carry out major attacks. This was just the trailer.” Horrible! Obviously, the ferocious animals are planning more attacks at schools in Pakistan. Apparently, they are taking revenge for the Pak military operation zarb e azb which they claim has killed their innocent children. One
survivor told how children belonging to army backgrounds were picked out and gunned down. Nevertheless, by killing school children, the TTP has crossed all limits of barbarism. Despite having been reminded many a times, the government has not been able to re-evaluate its counterterrorism strategy, to take the right steps and initiate the right policy so that we do not witness this kind of atrocity. Good Show: Last year the Pakistani nation has a fragile unity to deal with the national issue. Subsequent to the all parties conference APC headed by the prime minister and attended by Imran Khan among others in Peshawar and all participants had a single voice to defeat the terrorists. In other words, the sacrifice of 132 martyred kids and 9 martyred school staff has enabled the fragile nation to narrow the gaps if any. They have almost unanimously voiced for uniting to fight off the menace of terrorism. Disappointment: 2013 year, the Nawaz regime drew up the National Security Policy (NSP) and showed its seriousness in countering the growing terror threat in the country. Strengthening of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) to coordinate and assemble all efforts to fight the terror threat was talked about loudly yet one can’t see any progress on the issue beyond lip service. The politically embattled federal government has failed to realise that the military operation can’t be totally successful unless there is other counter terrorism strategy well in place. That is why, the ferocious militants
were more than encouraged to commit a preventable carnage on December 16., 2014 Normally, we can’t blame on security lapse, yet a counter strategy would have saved many innocent lives from being lost. The truth is there is a trust deficit which is why a negotiated settlement is out of questions. So far, no talks with Taliban did ever bring any peace as they are not trust worthy. The terrorists have no religion, no conscience and no remorse; they are transformed into monsters that are paid and hired by the vested interests to damage our national interests. In this game, they kill if they have to. They please their masters. Terrorist Attack at Karachi International Airport, attacking at the Wagah border and now killing so many children is part of enemy’s strategy. The terrorists burnt and shot the kids to death; toddlers and nine members of teaching staff at the Peshawar Army School were not spared either. This clearly indicates what type of people in the name of Islam they are. Although, the Pak military is heavily engaged in Operation Zarb-e-Azb, yet the fact is it can’t continue fighting successfully engaging the conventional methodology. Historically, such operations have failed to totally eliminate terrorists and provide security to the common Pakistani citizen. Fresh strategy to fight against the menace is an absolute necessity. Unpredictability: The TTP militants have the capacity to emerge at will anywhere in the country to carry out their brutality on innocent civilians. Many citizens, including non-school
going children, have died peacefully to serve their so-called national interests. Moreover, Pakistan has lost more than 70,000 people already, and more than 7000 military/security personnel have lost their lives while fighting the terrorists (enemy commandos). There are no two ways about it; the nation is paying the cost in the blood of its innocent people and now its children (students). The Pakistanis finally realize that the ongoing war on terror is Pakistan’s war. Finally, the Justice system is allowed to work against the terrorists. Once the mercy petitions are rejected, death warrants are issued and the convicted terrorists are hanged till their last breath. Recommendations: Since providing the 24/7 fool proof security everywhere is almost impossible, the people are morally obligated to be watching for any suspicious activity near them, Furthermore, the needed “Intelligence gathering’ is of utmost importance, so is sealing the borders to discourage the free inflow and outflow of militants. Also, a counter-terrorism strategy needs to be in place to disrupt the enemy supply line right at the original source. Beyond doubt, the Pak military knows its job very well as to how, when and where to carry out a pre emptive strike aimed at repulsing the terror attackers right at their door step. Importantly, the government, the military, the police and the civil society must stay on one page to get rid of the ongoing menace to save the country, now or never.

Tears and Blessing By: Gulshan Aalani Kudos to Canada for the best rescue mission. Seeing the arrival of Refugees, is such an emotional time for all of us. Especially, seeing the reunion of Father and his 2 Sons after 15 yrs is most overwhelming, bringing us to the reality of importance of our rescue mission and most needed ‘help’ given to them. Their every tear of happy unity is bringing blessings to our land. No doubt all the refugees are shedding the tears of joy for landing in the friendly peaceful country. Their every tear is bringing the most needed blessings to our Country in the critical time of trials and tribulations according to the Divine prophecies, but there is a chance it would decrease for our huge humanitarian rescue mission and no doubt the Creator-GOD’S blessings showering on Canada and the righteous Canadians for their utmost immediate amazing help. Let us hope and pray that the same way with a flick of a finger, we solve the problem of homeless people who are sleeping outside in cold and Rain.

Rangers’ powers: PPP decries federal govt decision, calls it ‘invasion of Sindh’ ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) condemned in the strongest terms what they called the ‘invasion of Sindh’ by the federal government after the interior ministry on Tuesday rejected the provincial government’s summary and extended Rangers’ special policing for another 60 days. In a statement released on Tuesday evening, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said that that by rejecting the constitutional right of Sindh to limit the scope of Rangers’ powers, asserting that “the federal government had acted in sheer violation of the Constitution”. “The Pakistan People’s Party will not permit this invasion of the provincial domain and warns against its consequences for the political stability of the federation,” said the PPP senator. Sindh Assembly adopts resolution seeking to curtail Rangers’ powers
KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution asking for checks and conditions on Rangers’ special powers to raid and arrest suspects. Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial presented the resolution on the critical issue of Rangers’ powers on the floor of the Sindh Assembly, amid chants and slogans by opposition members. The resolution, which was approved by the House, was criticised by opposition members who claimed the government wanted to seriously curtail the paramilitary force’s powers. The resolution states that Rangers will only have powers with respect to the following: • Target killing • Extortion • Kidnapping for ransom • Sectarian killing “That any person, who is not directly involved in terrorism and is only suspected of aiding and abetting terrorists or by way of terror financing or facilitating terrorists shall not be placed under preventive detention under any law without prior written approval of the Government of Sindh i.e Chief Minister. It is clarified that in case a person is suspected of the above, cogent reasons with complete evidence justifying
such preventive detention shall be provided to Government of Sindh, which will, based on the available evidence, approve or reject such proposal of preventive detention.” “The Pakistan Rangers Sindh shall not raid any office of Government of Sindh or any other Government Authority without prior written approval of the Chief Secretary, Government of Sindh.” Opposition members, including those from the Mutahidda Qaumi Movement, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), PML-F and the PML-Q, tore apart their copies of the resolution and staged a walkout from the assembly to register their protest against the PPP-led provincial government
Unit 2&3 12960-84 Ave, Surrey
PTI MPA Khurram Sher Zaman, in a presser outside the assembly, completely rejected the resolution saying the provincial government was in fact threatening the Karachi operation. Earlier, the provincial government had said that it was not reluctant to extend special policing powers of Rangers in Karachi, but was just trying to fulfil the constitutional requirement by getting it approved through Sindh Assembly. : DAWN.com
Musharraf says he invoked emergency after consulting Gen Kayani

Former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf has claimed that he invoked the Nov 3, 2007 emergency after holding consultations with former chief of army staff retired Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and the senior civilian and military hierarchy. This is the first time that Gen Musharraf has directly dragged Gen Kayani into the emergency issue since the PML-N government had filed a (high treason) complaint against him in a special court in December 2013. In a statement recorded before the joint investigation team (JIT) of the Federal Investigation Agency, the former military ruler termed the former army chief “principal offender” in the case. Trump calls Clinton ‘liar’ for Islamic State recruiting claim
U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Sunday that Democrat Hillary Clinton was a “liar” for claiming that his proposal to ban entry of all foreign Muslims into the United States has aided Islamic State’s propaganda efforts. Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump said Clinton had no evidence to back up a charge she made during a debate on Saturday that the Republican front-runner is becoming the extremist group’s “best recruiter.” “She’s a liar and everybody knows that,” Trump said. “She just made this up in thin air.” Trump’s call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States following a Dec. 2 attack in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 people has drawn widespread criticism from Republican rivals as well as Democrats like Clinton. During Saturday night’s Democratic debate, Clinton said Islamic State is using Trump’s rhetoric to enlist fighters to radical jihad. “They are going to people, showing videos of Donald Trump insulting Islam and Muslims in order to recruit more radical ji-
hadists,” the Democratic front-runner said. Counterterrorism experts and Reuters reporters who monitor Islamist online activity have found no evidence so far that Islamic State has mentioned Trump in its official online accounts. Asked to comment on Sunday, the Clinton campaign did not respond to Trump’s charge but reiterated that Hillary Clinton’s remark was based on evidence that supporters of the extremist group frequently cite Trump’s comments to make the case that Americans hate Muslims. It quoted a counterterrorism expert and linked to a tweet from a “very vocal ISIS supporter.” For Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, that’s enough to indicate that Trump is helping, not hurting, the jihadist group. “That’s the interpretation we made,” Podesta said on “Meet the Press,” adding “I think it’s a very fair charge.” Counterterrorism experts say it is nearly impossible to keep track of the torrent of online activity being generated by Islamic State and its sympathizers. “There are very few analysts who have watched all of IS’s videos,” said counterterrorism analyst Daveed Gartenstein-Ross. “That being said, I believe Hillary Clinton’s claim was false.” Still, Trump’s comments make it harder for the United States to build good will among Muslim populations and make him complicit in Islamic State mobilization efforts, said Democratic strategist Bud Jackson. “Donald Trump is in essence aiding and abetting the enemy with his comments. He’s making things worse, not better. There’s no denying that,” he said. Source: CNBC
Met office says 2016 ‘very likely’ to be warmest on record
A new global temperature forecast from the UK’s Met Office says that 2016 is likely to be even warmer than 2015. This year has already been provisionally declared the warmest on record thanks to a combination of global warming and a strong El Nino. The Met Office believes that temperatures in 2016 could be 1.1C above pre-industrial levels. Last week in Paris, countries agreed that the world should pursue efforts to limit the rise to 1.5C. The new forecast, a combination of computer models and statistical methods, says that the global average temperature for the next 12 months is likely to be 0.84C above the 1961-1990 average. When compared to the pre-industrial levels, the forecast predicts that next year’s temperature will be 1.1C above the 1850-1899 average. This is edging closer to the 1.5C level that governments agreed last week they would do their best to keep under in the long term. Last year, the forecast for 2015 predicted a central estimate of 0.64 above the average. Observational data from January to October this year shows the global mean temperature so far this year is running at 0.72 above 19611990. “The forecast for next year is on the back of some other strong years,” said the Met Office’s Prof Adam Scaife. “In 2014 we had 0.6 which was nominally a record, 2015 so far we’ve had 0.7 which is also nominally a record, and next year
we are talking about 0.8 - so you can see that very rapid rise over three years and by the end of 2016 we may be looking at three record years in a row.” The impact of the strong El Nino that started this year continues through the first half of next year. It’s already been responsible for a reduced monsoon season in India, it’s also weakened the Atlantic hurricane season and been involved in the early winter storms in Northern Europe in the past few weeks. The forecasters at the Met Office say it is responsible for up to 0.2C of next year’s value. In combination with continuing climate change, the forecasters believe it will lead to new records. “There is an uncertainty range, the bottom end of the range for 2016 is very close to the current value for 2015, so it’s not impossible that it will come out the same as 2015 but it is very likely to be higher,” said Prof Scaife. The Met Office says that the rise in temperature predicted for next year may not continue indefinitely - and may slip back under 1 degree over the coming years. But they argue that the growing warming signal can combine in unpredictable ways with smaller natural fluctuations leading to “unprecedented events”. “It’s when the natural variability rides on top of the climate change and gives us something we have not seen before,” said Prof Scaife. port for the government of President Assad. Also on Sunday, an explosion on a military bus on the outskirts of the capital Damascus injured several people. Earlier this week, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution outlining a peace process in Syria. The resolution endorsed talks between the Syrian government and opposition in early January, as well as a ceasefire, but disagreements remain between world powers over Mr Assad’s role in Syria’s future. The Syrian war, which is heading towards its fifth year, has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced millions more, the UN says.
Hezbollah chief vows to retaliate for Kantar killing Hezbollah blamed Israel on Monday for the killing of its high-profile commander Samir Kantar in Syria, vowing to avenge his death. “Tonight I say to the enemy and to the friend, the martyr Samir Kantar is one of us, a leader in our resistance and with all certainty he was killed by the Israelis,” said Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese Shia movement, in a televised speech. Speaking in a sombre tone, Nasrallah continued: “It is our right to respond to his assassination at the time and place and fashion we deem appropriate.” Kantar, who spent some 30 years in an Israeli prison and was released in 2008 as part of a prisoner swap with Hezbollah, was killed on Saturday night after suspected Israeli air strikes targeted the building he was staying in on the outskirts of the Syrian capital Damascus. He was reportedly working on the development of a Syrian resistance movement that would focus on the liberation of the Golan Heights from Israeli occupation in southern Syria. Quoting a speech he gave in January following an Israeli air strike in the Syrian province of Quneitra that killed several Hezbollah fighters, Nasrallah repeated the same message: “When Israel attacks anywhere in whatever way and at any time, it is the resistance’s right to respond wherever it may be, in whatever fashion, in any place. That is it.” Ali Hashem, a political commentator who closely follows Hezbollah’s movements, said the calmness of the speech was a divergence from the usual fiery approach Nasrallah tends to adopt. “I think Hezbollah was keen to convey a message to the Israelis that this [Kantar’s killing] won’t go without
a response,” Hashem told Al Jazeera. “Nasrallah also stressed the fact it would be at a time and place of their choosing, which means the whole border area - from Naqoura on Lebanon’s coast to the Golan Heights in Syria - is an open area for a future response.” Israeli has neither confirmed nor denied it was responsible for Kantar’s killing. Earlier on Monday, thousands of mourners attended the funeral of Kantar in Beirut’s southern suburbs. His brother, Bassam Kantar, wrote that Samir was involved in the resistance in Lebanon, and was one of the first fighters to sign up for the resistance in Syria. “Israel tried to kill him six times in Lebanon and in Syria,” he wrote in an article published in the Lebanese daily Al Akhbar. Others in Lebanon also praised Kantar. “Everyone working in this path of resistance knows they will be martyred and it is an honour for us to have such leaders,” Mohammad Hassan, a 29-year-old resident from Chiyah in Beirut, told Al Jazeera. “The resistance will keep going and instead of Samir Kantar there will be thousands of Samir Kantars who will continue his work.” Source: Al-Jazeera
Russia hits Ukraine with trade sanctions over EU deal
Russia is tightening trade sanctions on Ukraine in retaliation for Kiev’s sanctions and its EU free trade deal. Russia will apply new tariffs to Ukrainian exports from 1 January, when the free trade deal takes effect. Earlier Russia announced a ban on imported Ukrainian food - also from 1 January - because Ukraine blacklisted many Russian banks, defence firms and airlines, in line with EU sanctions. Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 triggered wide-ranging EU sanctions. The EU has decided to extend the sanctions for another six months until mid-2016 - because the Minsk peace deal, aimed at settling the eastern Ukraine conflict, will not be fulfilled as was envisaged by the end of this month. The sanctions were ratcheted up after pro-Russian separatists seized a large swathe of eastern Ukraine and declared independence from Kiev in 2014. Russia has sent heavy weapons and troops to help them, Western leaders say - something that Moscow denies. The US and some other Western countries also imposed sanctions on Russia, which retaliated by banning most imported Western food and drink. Separately, the Russian government said on Monday it would take legal action over Ukraine’s failure to repay a $3bn (£2bn) debt. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said Russia had refused to restructure the debt, unlike other foreign bondholders who had done so. He also called the debt - incurred in December 2013 - a “political bribe” from Moscow to former President Viktor Yanukovych, who
was facing mass street protests at the time. Mr Yanukovych fled to Russia in February 2014. Russia argues that the EU-Ukraine Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) threatens to turn Ukraine into a backdoor for cheap EU exports to Russia. So it is scrapping its preferential terms for Ukrainian exporters. Russia says it has tried unsuccessfully to reach agreement on the issue “peacefully and in a mutually beneficial way”. “Ukraine and the EU are not prepared to sign a legally binding accord that would take account of Russia’s interests,” Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said. Later the European Commission blamed Russia for the failure of talks on the DCFTA. A new legally binding accord would “reopen” the DCFTA, the Commission said, but “the DCFTA cannot be amended - neither directly nor indirectly”. In September Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko introduced sanctions against 388 Russian individuals and 105 firms and other organisations. The proportion of Ukrainian exports going to the EU jumped from below 25% in 2012 to almost 35% in the first seven months of this year, the Financial Times reports, in contrast with shrinking trade with Russia. Ukraine’s imports of Russian natural gas - for years a thorny issue in their relations - have also declined to a bare minimum. Ukraine’s gas dependency on Russia was reduced through energy efficiency measures and diversifying sources of supply. Source: BBC News

Canada’s finance ministers agree to revisit Trudeau Cites Risk in Curbing
pension reform talks in the new year Foreign Real-Estate Investment
A federal-provincial gathering of finance ministers reached rare consensus Monday on the polarizing subject of Canada Pension Plan reform -- they agreed to keep debating it. Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau emerged from two days of discussions with his provincial and territorial counterparts to explain that the group will reconvene midway through 2016 to continue their talks about CPP enhancement. “Our goal is that in a year from now, we’ll have more to talk to Canadians about, but we did not get to conclusion to what exactly we would be proposing,” Morneau told a news conference in Ottawa. “We did not commit to any end game, nor in fact was that our objective today. Our objective today was to begin a process to review the potential to move forward.” Morneau aims to eventually get some consensus on enhancing the Canada Pension Plan, a goal outlined in the new Liberal government’s election platform. The party has not released specifics on what changes could be made to the plan. Changing the CPP would require support from seven of the 10 provinces representing twothirds of the country’s population as well as a green light from Ottawa. But it’s unclear how much support the Liberals will attract when it comes to CPP enhancement, even though the provinces agreed Monday to continue discussing the subject in the new year. Ontario supports CPP expansion, while other big provinces like Quebec and Brit-
ish Columbia remain unconvinced. Quebec already has a public pension plan and B.C. has concerns about the fragile economy. Saskatchewan, meanwhile, opposes beefing up the CPP. “We’re happy with respect to the fact there’s no immediate changes to CPP -- we’ve been advocating that,” Saskatchewan Finance Minister Kevin Doherty said Monday after the meetings. Doherty has voiced his concerns about the negative impacts from the plunge in oil prices on his province’s bottom line. The economic realities of the country in 12 months will dictate how the provinces proceed with the CPP, he added. “We’ve agreed on a path forward with respect to coming back a year from now to talk about potential options -- including not doing anything,” said Doherty, who noted fellow oil producers in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador are also facing intense fiscal pressure. Quebec Finance Minister Carlos Leitao said, at the other end of the spectrum, the group will also look at the possibility of doubling the size public pensions -- like Ontario plans to do. Leitao said he’s wary of going that far, especially since Quebec recently increased its payroll premiums just to maintain the current benefits. “Whatever happens we have to be very mindful of a potential fiscal shock,” he said. “We want to avoid that.” Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa said he was encouraged the provinces are willing to discuss enhancing the CPP, particularly since he felt some had been “reluctant” and were “pushing back” on the issue. In the meantime, Sousa will proceed with his province’s own program, the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, which essentially mirrors the CPP for anyone who doesn’t already have a workplace pension. He said it’s necessary for retirement security. “We’re going down both tracks because the timing is essential,” said Sousa, who added the province has “off ramps” if changes are made to the CPP. Imposing curbs on foreign investment in Canadian real estate could have unintended consequences for the broader economy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned in a year-end interview with Canada’s Global Television Network, scheduled to air Christmas Day. Mr. Trudeau said there is a lack of “concrete data” about the impact of foreign buying on Canadian real estate, so moving ahead without proper information is risky. Mr. Trudeau’s comments emerge as a debate heats up over the impact overseas buyers may be having on housing affordability in the two of the country’s biggest housing markets—Toronto and Vancouver, British Columbia. “You know you have to be cautious about decisions like that that are based on a single factor because at the same time [it] would potentially devalue the equity that a lot of people have in their homes right now,” Mr. Trudeau said, according to a transcript of the interview distributed by Global TV. “We have to be very, very cautious about restricting foreign investment in our country at a time where we know we need foreign investment in businesses, in resource development.” Economists indicate strong sales and price growth in Toronto and Vancouver are supported by job creation in the two metropolitan areas, and an increasing number of people migrating to those urban centers as resource-rich parts of the country suffer under the weight of low commodity prices, as opposed to foreign investment. Meantime, Evan Siddall, the president of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., a government-owned mortgage insurer and housing agency, said in a recent speech that
foreign investment could be contributing to the overvaluation of housing prices in the two markets. But, he said, the country lacks “accurate and reliable data” to determine the role foreign investment has on housing prices in the country. CMHC data indicate foreign ownership of condominiums in Toronto and Vancouver edged up over the past 12 months, to 3.3% and 3.5%, respectively, from the low- to mid-2% range. The agency didn’t have data covering single-detached homes. The role foreign investment might be playing in driving up housing prices and sales in Toronto and Vancouver has sparked calls for lawmakers to act to keep housing prices in check. Former prime minister Stephen Harper pledged during the 2015 election campaign that his Conservative Party would act to tackle overseas buying of real estate. Mr. Harper lost a bid to win a fourth-straight mandate. And in a move this month targeting the Toronto and Vancouver markets, the Liberal government moved to cool down activity in housing by requiring first-time buyers to make larger down payments on pricier homes. Other nations are struggling with foreign investment in real estate too. In Australia, the government has strengthened rules amid concerns Chinese buyers are driving up housing prices and making properties unaffordable for locals. Overseas buyers are prohibited from purchasing houses in the resale market, although investment in new housing is allowed. Authorities in Australia estimate half of China’s total investment in the country is in real estate. Source: Wall Street Journal
Councilors could face law suits Saudi Arabia elects up to 17 female if they fail to fulfill poll promises councillors in historic election
DAMMAM: A number of citizens in the Eastern Province said that they will take members of the new local councils to court if they don’t keep the promises they made during their local elections campaigns, warning that these promises are documented in videos and the publications of the contenders, and thus will not be easily forgotten. Residents Abdullah Al-Qurashi, Khaled AlGhamdi and Mohmmad bin Mamdouh said on the topic: “We heard many things during the campaigns, but its going to be different this time if they don’t carry out their promises.” Many of the contenders promised a lot during the last local election campaigns about improving services and personally checking in on roads, neighborhoods, construction projects and other initiatives that are in need of attention or which are stalled entirely. In all honesty, if these promises are not kept, “we will take them to court because we have them on record as saying these things,” Al-Qurashi said. Many other residents seem to share the
same view. Ahmed Al-Subei said that he expects the elected individuals to stay true to their words. “I gave my vote to one of the contenders in the Dhahran district. I looked at this candidate’s program and felt like it was a good one given his promises of services for people in cooperation with the municipality. But I will go to the courts if these promises are not kept,” he said. “This is the first simple rights of citizens with regard to electoral contenders, and we demand that they live up to their promises. I call on them to present a plan to the municipality to find solutions to the existing problems in neighborhoods including bad services, cleanliness and other responsibilities,” he added. Al-Subei noted that the new council members have had a lot of trust invested in them by citizens, and must use their new positions for the benefit of citizens by monitoring the councils and municipalities and coming up with solutions to problems like traffic congestions, inadequate services and the cleaning up of neighborhoods.
Saudi Arabia has elected its first female local councillors in a historic step for a country where women are banned from driving and face routine discrimination. Results from Saturday’s municipal council elections indicated there were about 17 female winners. These included four in Jeddah, one near Mecca – home to Islam’s holiest site – and others in Tabuk, Ahsaa and Qatif. Several more, reported by al-Sabq online newspaper, were expected to be confirmed later. Rasha Hefzi, a prominent businesswoman who won a seat in Jeddah, thanked all those who supported her campaign and trusted her, pledging: “What we have started, we will continue.” Hefzi and other candidates used social media to contact voters because of restrictions on women meeting men and bans on both sexes using photographs. Saudi Arabia elections: ‘It will be enough even if one woman wins’ Read more The turnout, estimate to be about 25%, was low, as was registration. Only 1.32 million
men and 130,000 women out of a population of 20 million voted – figures that highlight the unfamiliarity of the democratic process of election in the absolute monarchy. But there was surprise at the number of women who took seats. “I think it’s great that several women won in different regions of Saudi Arabia,” said writer Maha Akeel. “It shows how much Saudi society has progressed on the issue of not only accepting, but actually supporting women in public office, and this could mean that more change is to come. I’m surprised. We expected maybe one or two women would win.” Local elections were held in 2005 and 2011, but this was the first time women were allowed to take part. The powers of municipal councils are limited to advising local government and helping oversee budgets, but the election has still been hailed by women activists as a crucial first step towards achieving wider rights and broadening the understanding of civic engagement. F A I T H Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 34, Number 425:Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary (Jesus) will shortly descend amongst you people (Muslims) as a just ruler and will break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya (a tax taken from the non-Muslims, who are in the protection, of the Muslim government). Then there will be abundance of money and no-body will accept charitable gifts.
Prophet (Jesus) ISA (A.S) In Islam By: Sadullah Khan “Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter, he is of those nearest to Allah”; [Qur’an 3:45] Belief in Prophets (May Allah’s Peace be upon all of them) Islam emphasizes the universality of the institution of prophethood. According to the Qur’an, there is not a single nation in the world to which a prophet has not appeared sometime in history: “There is not a people but a warner has gone among them” [Q35:24]. And again: “For every nation there is a messenger” [Q10:47] The Qur’an mentions about 25 of the Biblical Prophets by name [Q4:163] and we are further told that there have been prophets besides those mentioned in the Qur’an: “And We sent messengers We have mentioned to thee before, and messengers We have not mentioned to thee” [Q4:164] . It is an Islamic article of Faith to believe .in all Prophets; from Adam through Abraham, Moses, Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them) [Q2:184] all Prophets were models of excellence who were commissioned to guide humankind [Q2:213]the mission of Prophets was to establish justice for all [Q57:25] that Prophets were the embodiments of Righteousness; “And Zachariah, John, Jesus and Elijah; all of these were of the most Righteous.” [Q6:85] It is an accepted fact in Islam that the struggle and legacy of the prophets (peace be upon them) serve as universal guides, excellent examples and as sources of hope and inspiration. Status of Maryam/Mary Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a prominent figure in Islam and the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an. The Qur’an upholds Mary as one of the four perfect examples of womanhood [Q66:12] . Mary is mentioned more times and more biographical information about her is contained in the Qur’an than in the entire New Testament. The birth of Jesus Christ is described in twice in the Qur’an - chapter 3 and chapter 19. Reading from the beginning of his birth, we come across the story of Mary, and the esteemed position which she occupies in the House of Islam, before the actual annunciation of the birth of Jesus is made. The Qur’anic account of Mary includes the
pregnancy off hher mother, Mary’s birth the th M ’ bi th and d th annunciations of the coming birth of Jesus: “Remember how she preserved her chastity, into whom We breathed a life from Us, and made her and her son a token for humankind” [Q21:91]. The Qur’an teaches that Mary is to be revered because she completely submitted herself to God’s will, even though it meant that her own family would accuse her of unchastity when it was discovered that she was pregnant [Q19:16-21] . The mother of Jesus (peace be upon them) is accorded highest respect and considered as among the most noble in the estimation of Allah. [Q3:33] Behold! the angels said: O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you, chosen you above the women of all nations.” [Q3:42] The entire chapter 19 titled Maryam/Mary in the Qur’an and another (chapter 3) is titled Al’Imran after the family of Mary. Jesus /’Isa referred to 9 times in the Qur’an as ‘Isa and 16 times as ‘Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary) Mary is considered chaste, virtuous, receiver of God’s spirit, a testimony to the veracity of God’s message and piously obedient [Q66:11] Uniqueness of Jesus (pbuh) Virgin birth -The Qur’an gives an account of the birth of Jesus in chapter 3. Mary is described as being a virgin, chosen by God, and considered with great honor. “Behold! the angels said: O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary.” [Q3:45] . Verse 47 relates the response of and to Mary, “She said: O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me? He said: ‘Even so: Allah creates what He wills: When He has decreed a plan, He merely says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is!” The Qur’an thus affirms and Muslims believe that Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. The birth is seen as a sign (ayah) of Allah’s power and as a miraculous event. And Muslims have a high regard also for Mary. However, the Qur’an presents Jesus as the son of Mary and not as the Son of God, a significant point particularly emphasized. Like Adam (pbuh) -Though the unique birth of Jesus with one parent is no indication of divinity just as Adam’s creation was without any parentage [Q3:59] . Messiah -It is obvious that Jesus holds an exalted place within Islam. Some of the honorable epithets of Jesus (pbuh) mentioned in the Qur’an are ... prophet / nabi, messenger of God / rasul, of the Righteous / min-as-salihin, word of Allah / kalimatu-Llah), spirit from God / ruhun mina’ Llah, positive sign/symbol for humanity / aayatun lin- naas, mercy from God / rahmatan minna, the son of Mary / ibne
Names Of A l l a h (SWT) & Mohammad (PBUH) Last edition Al Names were Al
Mujib name of Allah(swt) & -Nasir Mohammad(saw) name.
Maryam, eminent this world the nextt M i t iin thi ld and d th / wajihan fid-dunya wal-aakhirah, and most unique of all... the Messiah / masih. Miracles -The Qur’an speaks of Jesus possessing intellect and eloquence in childhood [Q19:30] and documents some of Jesus’ miracles, including curing the sick, restoring the sight of the blind and reviving the dead, with God’s permission [Q5:110] . The Qur’an specifically mentions two miracles which the Bible does not contain; 1. The Qur’an records Jesus as an infant verbally defending Mary’s innocence [Q19:2735]. In Surah 19:27-34, Jesus speaks from the cradle to state his mission. Jesus said, “I am indeed a servant of Allah Who has given me revelation and made me a prophet.” 2. The Qur’an [Q5:110] also reports that Jesus formed a bird out of clay, and blew into it, and it came to life and flew away. This last miracle is not recorded in the canonical New Testament but does appear in the noncanonical Gospel of Thomas. It must be remembered that all miracles / mu’jizah performed by prophets (pbuh) are done through the agency of the prophets but by the power and authority of God. Jesus’ miracles too are considered basically in the line of his being a prophet and in God’s enabling and permitting him to do so. The Qur’an thus stresses the fact that the miracles of Jesus were performed by the permission and power of God [Q5:110] .No Easter Commemoration Millions of Christians commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus (pbuh), and this begs the question that if Jesus is important to Muslims, why do Muslims then not commemorate Easter. Though Muslims accept Jesus (pbuh) as a great prophet, revere his exemplary mother Mary, and believe that Jesus is the Messiah; Muslims do not accept the major concepts that are central to the commemoration of the Easter weekend. Among these concepts are... Divine Incarnation and Trinity [Q4:171] [Q112:1-4] -Allah is ONE in an absolute sense, no one shares in His Lordship nor in His divinity; nothing is equal or comparable to God. This is in keeping with the command, “and Jesus answered him, the first of all the commandment is, Hear, O Israel; The LORD our God is One LORD.” [Mark 12:29]. In promoting a great human such as Jesus (pbuh) to divinity, does not elevate Jesus as much as it minimizes the concept of the divine; is not making the finite infinite as much as making the perfect imperfect; not an elevation of Jesus, but rather a devaluation of the Divine. Crucifixion -Christ, according to Muslim belief, did NOT die on a cross [Q4:157] but
was rather by Allah and th elevated l saved from being killed [Q4:158]. Resurrection -Not having died, Jesus could NOT have been resurrected [Q4:156]. Inherited Sinfulness [Q2:285] -Babies are born pure and no one is born bearing the sin of any one and no one bears the burden of another [Q17:15] . Redemption / Atonement -Muslims do not believe in the doctrine of OriginalSin, so there is no theological need for the all-atoning sacrifice of Jesus through his crucifixion and resurrection. Muslims further believe that each person will be held accountable before God for his/her own actions and thus responsible for their own salvation. Therefore, we will not be able to rely upon anyone else, not even Jesus or Muhammad, to save us from our sins. Sins are those acts we deliberately incur by our choice of actions, we are responsible and hence personally accountable. In Islam there is no notion of redemption for one’s sin by another. Each one is accountable for himself/herself [Q99:7-8] and for each person according to his/her personal striving [Q2:286] . Jesus is ... Jesus denied by some as a fictional character, accused of being an illegitimate child by some, misconceived as divine by many; considered as a Prophet and Messiah in Islam. People do have differing perspectives on Jesus’ life and teachings, but his spiritual legacy, as a righteous and principled guide, his mission as a Prince of Peace offers an alternative opportunity for people of faith to recognize their shared religious heritage. Allah bears testimony to the truthfulness of Jesus; his mission, character, status and his very being. “Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: a statement of truth, about which people dispute.” [Q19:34]. All sincere ones would do well to reflect on the verse in the Quran reaffirming Islam’s eternal message of spiritual unity: “Say: ‘We believe in God and the revelation given to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and message given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to all Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.” [Q2:136]

Zikr, Hamad o Naat , Darood o Salam and Eid Milad un Nabi (saw) Celebrates in Town
The Milad Celebrated:At Fiji Islamic Centre by IMAC Muslims of Lower Mainland gathered at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey on Dec 19, where the International Muslim Academy of Canada(IMAC) organised the annual 20th Jashne Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam). Mr. Aseem Khan was the master of ceremony of this event. First, he requested Hafiz Mohammad Ishtiaq for recitation of Quran. After that Mr. Khan invited local Naat Khawans to recite Naats including Br Muzamil Ahmed, Br. Abul Salis Rasool. Br Mohammad Younus (former Imam Fleetwood Islamic Centre) recited few verses of Quran and delivered the speech at Seer un Nabi (SAW) in English. Mr. Khan invited Mawlana Shaykh Sayed Nurjan Mirahmadi of Naqashbandi Sufi centre in Vancouver. Syed Nurjan explained the birthday of beloved Prophet Mohammad(SAW) with the references of different Quranic Ayats and Haidths. He talked about how much Allah (SWT) loves His beloved Mohammad (SAW) who established love in all mankind. Our Prophet is a symbol of Love and all we are here to seeking the love with him, with Ahele-Bait, his companions. Mohammad (SAW) said “if you follow me then I will love you.” and that “love with Al-
lah and Rasool will wipe out all your sins”. We should prepare ourselves for the Day of Judgement with our good deeds not only with prayer, fast. He reminded that we should be a practising Muslim in our daily life, and spend our lives in the path of Allah (SWT).We should all try to pray five times a day and recite Darood many times a day and it will help to get mercy of Allah (SWT). Local dynamic Urdu speaker Maulana A. Latif Naumani, Imam and Khateeb of Fiji Islamic Centre recited the relevant Quranic ayats and narrated few Haidths. He said that it is Allah blessing that we Sunni Muslims gathered under one roof for the celebration of the birth of beloved Mohammad (SAW). Maulana Naumani delivered a stunning bayan in Urdu in which he focused on the birth of Prophet Mohammad(SAW) and love with Allah and his messenger Mohammad (SAW). He said that today I will remind you once again about what is Milad?, It is the day on which our beloved Prophet Mohammed (SAW) was born , and we Sunni scholars explain the Seerat un Nabi (SAW) right from the birth to the Holy Prophet (SAW) till Wasal (death). Where is the shirk in this? And deny of birthday of Prophet(SAW), is it
not Kuffar? He said that all Muslims should try to understand the respect of Mohammad (SAW) and should be true followers by practicing. Who do not celebrate Milad, they have very valid argument that most of the Miladis who participate in all Milads and Mefil Naats, their presence at regular 5 times prayers is rare. Maulana Naumani said, Quran says about Namaz (Prayer) in many places and in haidths also importance of prayers is explained many times. Holy Prophet (SAW) said:”Meri aank-
hon ki thandak or roshni NAMAZ hai. ‘’ Most of us believe in and respect Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW) but unfortunately do not follow his teachings. So please promise with me here today that you will prove yourself a practicing Muslims and will perform your 5 times payers daily. The evening ended with Darood o Salam, with Du’a by President Bullay Shah Academy of Canada Pir Afzal Ahmed.

Saudi Arabia Forms Muslim Antiterror Coalition
Projecting its ambition for regional leadership, Saudi Arabia said Tuesday it has lined up most of the Arab world, NATO member Turkey and several African and Asian countries behind a vaguely defined “Islamic military alliance” against terrorists. The move allows the kingdom, which follows a deeply conservative interpretation of Islam, to cast itself as a leader in the fight against extremism. But absent from the alliance are the Shiite-led countries of Iran and Iraq, as well as Syria, whose government is backed by Tehran. And that omission raises questions about whether the 34-member bloc is primarily intended to present a unified front against extremists — or to also serve as a Sunni deterrent to Iran, Saudi Arabia’s main regional rival. Riyadh supports rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad and has been leading an Arab coalition against Iran-supported Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen since March. It is also part of the U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq. The announcement on state media said the Saudi-led alliance is being established because terrorism “should be fought by all means.” Deputy Crown Prince and Defence Minister Mohammed bin Salman said at a rare news conference that the bloc will develop mechanisms for working with other countries and international bodies to support counterterrorism efforts. Their efforts would not be limited to countering the Islamic State group, he added. “Currently, every Muslim country is fighting terrorism individually ... so co-ordinating efforts is very important,” he said. Though few details were given, the statement said the alliance would not just be countering Sunni extremists but protecting Muslim nations from all terrorists “whatever their doctrine.” When asked if this meant the alliance would also counter Shiite militants, the Saudi defence minister replied the coalition would fight terrorist groups “regardless of their categoriza-
tion,” particularly in Syria and Iraq, where he said there will be co-operation with the international community. The U.S. and its allies have trained militarily with the Gulf states and other friendly countries in the region for years, encouraging them to work more closely together. Last year, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states joined the U.S. in carrying out airstrikes in Syria against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL. Many of the Arab countries in the new Saudi-led coalition are part of that existing alliance against IS, though their contributions have waned since March, with Gulf efforts diverted to the Yemen offensive. The Saudi endeavour appeared to catch some in Washington off-guard. A senior defence official said the U.S. did not know in advance about the plan for the alliance and that officials were working to find out details. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter, visiting Incerlik Air Base in Turkey, said: “In general, at least, it appears that it’s very much aligned with something that we’ve been urging for quite some time, which is greater involvement in the campaign to combat ISIL by Sunni Arab countries.” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the alliance wouldn’t be a substitute or a replacement for the U.S.-led coalition fighting IS militants, noting the Saudi effort was intended to focus on broader targets. The Saudis have made “important contributions” to the anti-IS coalition led by Washington, “and we anticipate that they will continue to do so,” he said. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said in Paris that members could ask for assistance from the coalition, which would address the requests “on a case-by-case basis.” He did not rule out the deployment of ground troops. “There is no limit in terms of where the assistance would be provided, or to whom it would be provided,” he said. But here is another umbrella,” he said. “They want to say it’s ‘good Muslims fighting bad Muslims.“’ Alani acknowledged there are “a lot of difficulties on the technical side” to making such a military coalition work, adding it will need support from the wider international community. But if successful, he said, it could help fill a much-needed gap in the fight against IS. “Islam is accused — directly or indirectly — of sponsoring terrorism. Everyone has to prove not guilty,” he said. “This project is going to offer Muslim boots on the ground. This is what the West wants.” Jihadis on a popular IS-affiliated website quickly mocked the alliance, with one suggesting it was a U.S.-inspired project. Missing is Saudi neighbour Oman, which in recent years has maintained a neutral role and has emerged as a mediator in regional conflicts, serving as a conduit from the Gulf Arabs to Iran. The formation of the alliance appears to be a de facto cancellation of implementing an Egyptiansponsored Arab summit resolution from March to create an Arab rapid deployment force. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were seen as providing the majority of that contingent’s manpower and funding. The deadline for creating that force expired in September. Saudi Arabia’s generous support to Egypt has been somewhat curtailed under new monarch King Salman, whose foreign policy goals are partly at odds with Cairo’s. Both nations have sharply different perceptions of who poses the biggest threat to their security and also don’t agree on Syria. Riyadh sees Assad’s removal as essential to ending the civil war, while Cairo sees that as a recipe for chaos and bloodshed in which militancy would dominate. Best Example of Prophet(PBUH) for Youth Today
By: Idris Tawfiq
“Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has full knowledge of all things.” (AlAhzab 33:40) Young people today see a lot of pomp and ceremony when it comes to politicians and leaders. It seems today as though the more authority you have, the more the red carpet is laid out for you, the more special attire and finery you are expected to wear, and the more freedom you have to express your opinions - whether they are held up by evidence or not, and no matter how much they may offend others. But let’s take a look at the final Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and see the stark difference between what is now and what was before. “Which one is Muhammad?” So humble was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that strangers looking for him in the mosque in Madinah had to ask this. Sitting in the row of believers for the daily prayers, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with his simple and modest bearing, could not be distinguished from anyone else. He was so calm, so dignified, and so peaceful that no one could single him out as the leader. Children and youth could approach him to receive a warm greeting or to ask this great, yet humble, man a question or some advice. In quiet prayer he looked like any other simple man. There was no sign here of the great warrior, the skillful negotiator in times of war and peace, the statesman. There was no sign either that this was the man, from among all men, who was chosen to receive the Creator’s final message to mankind. In the mosque his focus was on Allah alone. He was like every Muslim who enters the mosque to pray. And yet, unlike any other Muslim, he had been chosen as the Seal of the Prophets, the most honorable and the noblest of men. He was the one whom Allah selected to guide all mankind. Orphaned by the age of six and born in a relatively unimportant region of the world to a simple family, Muhammad could neither read nor write. When commanded by the Angel Jibreel to recite the first glorious verses of the Qur’an, Muhammad could only respond that he was unable to read or recite them. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had neither power nor wealth. He possessed none of the things that the world considers important. Yet Allah chose him from all men in the world to be what the Qur’an calls “a mercy to mankind.” This is the role that young Muslims should take on in this world that is so full of turmoil and hate. The youth are the standardbearers of the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and it is a message of mercy. In his person, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a mercy to all the people on earth. One so kind, so pious, so devout in prayer and obedience to the will of Allah had been chosen as the guide for mankind. We should ask ourselves, how closely are we living our lives according to the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). If we are living in his way, no problem will be too great to overcome, our future will appear clear before us, and the challenges of young adulthood will seem small. If young Muslims join in the ranks of the followers of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they will be joining the ranks of the merciful, pious, and just people through all
the ages, from the beginning of time. Indeed, Allah opens the way for those who sincerely obey Him and His Messenger. Good people should surround themselves with good friends. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was surrounded by people who sought the pleasure of Allah. Ask yourself: Who do you mix with and why? Your friends reflect who you are. At the end of his life, when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was
for us to do so. We see him as a simple man, chosen from among men, with the same cares and worries we might have. But in Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) we see that it is possible for us to dedicate all our lives to Allah and to live under His guidance, yet live in the midst of life. Not divine, but human like us, Prophet Muhammad showed us by his life and example that Islam is the perfect way of
laid to rest in the earth, his funeral was attended by his heartbroken friends and Companions. They had been with him for so long, many since the time of the first revelation of the Qur’an some 23 years before, and now they were to be left alone, without a guide for the first time in so many years. Imagine yourself living at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); imagine walking in his blessed footsteps. If you follow his Sunnah, you are walking in his footsteps today. His body was not laid to rest in some grand tomb as one might expect for so important and so influential a man. Rather it was placed in the earth beneath the spot where he used to sleep on a simple mat. It fell upon Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him), his friend from before the time of the first revelation, to deliver the funeral sermon. Abu Bakr had to try to make sense out of this tragedy for the crowds assembled before him. At this key moment in the development of Islam, they eagerly awaited what Abu Bakr, the closest friend of the Prophet, would have to say. His words to them were filled with wisdom. “O men,” he said, “if anyone worships Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad is dead. But if anyone worships Allah, then know that Allah is alive and will never die.” Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) told the Muslim faithful that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the greatest man to have lived but he was not the Lord of all creation. He was a man like all men. And this is what makes Islam so extraordinary. There are now at least one and a half billion Muslims in the world, and we are attentive to what our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said or did. Each one of us proclaims at least five times a day that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. It is the core of our faith. In the same breath in which we declare belief in the One true Lord of mankind and all that exists, we declare belief in His Messenger. The love and reverence which we have for Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is both real and deep. We see him as the gentlest, the kindest, and the sweetest of men, and yet he remains for us precisely that: a man. Neither a god nor a saint. We do not ascribe to our Prophet magical powers. It would be a blasphemy
life and that it is possible to achieve happiness by following this way. If you find your life is taking you in another direction, stop and think. Don’t make decisions in your youth that will take you on a different path that heads away from that of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In Islam there are no priests or popes. That, perhaps, is the secret of Islam. There is no special knowledge reserved for a professional religious class. There are no go-
betweens between the Creator and the created. Islam is ours for the taking. How many of us reach out and take what Islam has to offer? How many of us are shining examples of mercy and justice that Islam can develop in us? Each of us can fall prostrate before our Maker and say what we need to say without the help of anyone else. Just you and your creator! We can see this clearly inside any mosque. Muslim men and women, each in their own place, gather in the mosque for the five daily prayers. They pray together as a community, in congregation, receiving blessings for doing so, yet it is obvious to anyone who looks on that each Muslim is concerned with speaking to his or her Lord individually. It is perhaps this, more than anything else, which makes the place of Prophet Muhammad so strong in the heart of every Muslim. Muhammad was a man and he found it possible, with Allah’s help, to live out every requirement of Islam. So you and I, then, can try to do the same and, with Allah’s help, we can live out our faith like our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). About the writer: Idris Tawfiq has a degree in English language and Literature from the University of Manchester and a degree in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. For many years he was Head of Religious Studies in different schools in England and Wales and has much experience of teaching, both in the UK and Egypt. Before embracing Islam, Idris was a Roman Catholic priest.

Banished from soccer’s ruling body for eight years for unethical conduct, Sepp Blatter won’t give up the presidency of his beloved FIFA without a fight. “I will fight. I will fight until the end,” Blatter said Monday at a news conference that started 90 minutes after he and former protege Michel Platini were each banned by FIFA’s ethics committee. It was a stunning removal of world soccer’s most powerful leaders over a $2 million payment by FIFA to Platini, the president of European soccer’s ruling body UEFA. The payment is also the subject of a criminal investigation in Switzerland. Already serving a provisional ban, the elected FIFA president and his long-time likely successor were kicked out of the sport just two months before 209 member federations elect a new leader. Platini, a FIFA vice-president whose bid to succeed Blatter on Feb. 26 now looks over, described the proceedings as a “true mockery.” Their offences were judged to be conflict of interest and disloyalty to FIFA. They avoided life bans because corruption was not proven. Platini’s lawyer, Thibaud d’Ales, told The Associated Press it came as no surprise that the corruption charge had been dropped. Guilty verdicts were expected. So were the subsequent denials of wrongdoing and promises of urgent appeals to FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Blatter’s defiant display was a bonus for international media summoned to FIFA’s former headquarters, just hundreds of meters (yards) from the new building where he spent eight hours with four ethics judges last Thursday. The choice of venue hinted at a vintage Blatter show. He did not disappoint. Blatter invoked Nelson Mandela within a minute, pointing to the spot where the iconic South African leader had lifted the World Cup trophy 11 years ago, when his country was chosen as the host nation for the 2010 tournament. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech, the Nobel organization and the United Nations were also referenced in a spirited 52-minute performance as he held court with more than 100 journalists. His last words were “I’ll be back, thank you.” Blatter’s trademark fighting talk was delivered while still sporting a strip of surgical tape on his right cheek after a minor medical procedure five days earlier. Blatter made it clear he regretted his current position but declared he was innocent of any wrongdoing. “I am not ashamed,” he said. “I am sorry that I am a punching ball. I am sorry for football. ... I am now suspended eight years, suspended eight years. Suspended eight years for what?” Platini was also dismissive of the ethics commission’s work. He said its proceedings, which included a hearing earlier this month that he did not attend, had been “orchestrated... by governing bodies that I know well” to tarnish him. “I’m convinced that my fate was sealed before the Dec. 18 hearing and that this decision is just a pathetic manoeuvr to hide a true will of taking me out of the football
world,” the Frenchman said. “My behaviour has always been faultless and I’m at peace with my own conscience.” Platini said he will also file a lawsuit in a civil court to seek damages for what he has endured during the ethics commission’s proceedings. In a brief statement, UEFA said it was “extremely disappointed” with the ruling and supported its leader’s right to clear his name. FIFA’s ethics judges decided that Blatter and Platini had broken ethics rules on conflicts of interest, breach of loyalty and offering or receiving gifts. Platini took $2 million of FIFA money in 2011 - a payment approved by Blatter as uncontracted salary for work as a presidential adviser from 19992002. In Monday’s verdict, Blatter was fined 50,000 Swiss francs ($50,250) and Platini 80,000 Swiss francs ($80,400). “Neither in his written statement nor in his personal hearing was Mr. Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this payment,” the judges said. “By failing to place FIFA’s interests first and abstain from doing anything which could be contrary to FIFA’s interests, Mr. Blatter violated his fiduciary duty to FIFA. “His (Blatter’s) assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber.” Blatter hit back at that conclusion during his news conference, portraying the ethics committee as saying of Platini and himself: “He’s a liar and I’m a liar.” “This is not correct,” Blatter said. Blatter acknowledged an administrative “error” in failing to register FIFA’s debt to Platini in its accounts for eight years, though he insisted: “This is nothing to do with the ethics regulations.” The Swiss had started tentatively and the grey bristles on his chin - that clearly showed he hadn’t shaven that morning - added to his aged appearance. Yet his voice grew stronger, seeming to take heart from gentle prompts and notes given by his only child, daughter Corinne, sitting to his left. He spoke in four languages and translated his own German, French and Spanish answers into English, clearly relishing the attention of a big audience again. By the end, with his top shirt button undone and tie loose, it was possible to forget that Blatter had faced a health scare on Nov. 1. “I am back, I am back, I am doing better,” he said. “I have the support of my daughter, I have the support of Linda (Barras), my love.” While Blatter wants to leave FIFA with his head high, the 60-year-old Platini wants to clear his name, pass a FIFA integrity check and be declared an official candidate in the election he had been favoured to win. Platini’s campaign has stalled since he was questioned on Sept. 25 in a Swiss federal investigation of suspected criminal mismanagement at FIFA. Switzerland’s attorney general has opened criminal proceedings against Blatter for the suspected “disloyal payment” of FIFA money to Platini and selling undervalued World Cup TV rights for the Caribbean. Platini was paid in February 2011, just before Blatter began campaigning for

Sepp Blatter says ‘I am still president’ despite FIFA’s 8-year ban re-election against Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar. Platini’s UEFA urged its members weeks before the June 2011 election to back Blatter, who was elected unopposed when Bin Hammam was implicated in bribery. Few FIFA officials knew of the Platini payment which emerged during a wider Swiss probe of the governing body’s business affairs, including suspected money laundering in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests. “I have never cheated with money,” Blatter insisted, before claiming he still wielded authority in the sport. “I am still the president. Even if I am suspended, I am still the president.” Source: CTV News

20 W O M E N Modern Technology and its Challenges for Parents. Rabiul Awaal 13, 1437 December 25, 2015
By: Nafisa Siddiqui Last week I was invited to a barbecue dinner. It was a family get together, where one gets an opportunity to meet family and friends of all ages. I saw a group of teenage girls sitting on a swing with iPhones in their hands and tiny head phones stuffed in their ears. They are good friends, I was curious that instead of talking to each other they were busy texting. I asked one of the girls that you are good friends, why don’t you talk to each other instead of being busy with your gadgets. They started laughing and replied, “Aunty, we are talking to each other “. I further inquired, “I don’t get it? All I can see is that you all are busy with your iPhones.” They replied, “OH! We are texting each other” Seeing my confused reaction, they added, “yes, that’s how we are talking.” This small incident shows what part these devices are playing in our children’s life. If you are in a coffee shop, standing at a bus stop or taking the sky train, all you observe is that people are connected to each other using various electronic devices. The other day we went out for a dinner at a diner and at a table on our right sat a couple, who seemed to be dating. All through the evening, I observed, they were not chatting but engrossed in their hand held devices. According to a survey an average teenager sends 3,339 texts per month, though teen females outdoes the males by sending an incredible 4,050 texts each month. Another survey report shows that Canadians are spending more time online than the users in 10 other high tech countries. These observations make one thing very obvious, that this technology is damaging face-to-face connection and communication between people. It seems that Technology has deprived mankind from the warmth of personal contact. Emails replaced handwritten letters and communication lost its personal touch.
A question arises, what will be the future of face to face communication? Is it going to be minimal or non-existing? It shows that our children are ‘Digital Natives’ In a world with abundance of high technology culture.TVshows, computers,Video games, social networking sites, advertisements and tons of latest cell phones and tablets which often have a strong negative influence on children. This generation is participating in a massive social experiment and the result of which is unpredictable. These day to day observation makes you think that in the future, our young generation will be living in a virtual world interacting with people by texting and social networking. This situation will encourage them to live in a lonely environment. I did some research to find out about texting and its impact, the results I fond was very disturbing. According to a survey report conducted for Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, alarming proportion of Ontario teens have texted while driving. The American Academy of Pediatric found these shocking statistics from a “Kaiser Family Foundation” Study which says “ The average 8-10 year old spends nearly eight (nine by another non-profit organization) hours a day with a variety of different media, and older children and teenagers spend 11hours per day .That’s more time than teens typically spend sleeping, and more time that they spend with their parents and teachers. Those nine hours does not include time spent using media at school or for their homework. This amount of technology consumption in teen agers is quit scary. Exposure to the Internet technology from an early age has resulted in children and youngsters addicted to it. Another point which raises concern is that Internet is an open platform for expression and lacks regulation, which encourages cy-
bercrime. It has bred many unethical practices like hacking and spamming, gambling and identity theft. Child predators target children easily. Spread of vulgarity and obscenity on web raises serious concern for the people of the whole world who believe in ethics. Internet Crime against children is increasing, different agencies who are working on the internet for crimes against children, find these statistics: “Crime against Children Research centre” 25% of children have been exposed to unwanted pornographic material online. Only 33% of households with Internet access are actively protecting their children with filtering or blocking software. 75% of children are willing to share personal information online about themselves and their family in exchange for goods and services. eMarketer Raising Children in this Media-Fueled World and to keep them safe is a constant challenge for parents .Abundance of technology- infused surroundings like Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks, it’s hard for parents to keep healthy balanced relationship between digital technology and teen agers and how to guide them to live their lives in a positive way. To play safe, best option left for the parents
is to keep track of the web sites the children are using. This can be done by Installing Internet filtering software which block unethical sites from computer .This software monitors and records instant messaging and chat room conversations, as well as websites visited. American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to limit children’s time spent with computers, video games, and other media to no more than one to two hours a day, and emphasize alternative activities such as imaginative play, going outside or regular sports. We have to admit that we cannot live with outTechnology, the technology is a segment of our life,It is a boon to society but only if we keep a balance. If we failed to keep this boundary, instead of boon it will bring some negative effect on our culture, our society and our new generation. It has both positive and negative sides. We are the deciders and we have to choose how to use it for our benefit. References: “Teens,Smart phone Texting “by Amanda Lenhart “Raising Generation Tec” . What a Beautiful night full of lights
Lovely lights everywhere, it looks so beautiful. A night when it is dark, looks scary??? Stars, Moonlight, Lamps, Candles, Bulbs, Tube lights, Campfire, Halogen light, so many options to remove darkness. When there is light in the dark night it looks beautiful, not scary. The problem or situation or problems in any relations may look dark, difficult, but a small lamp of understanding, effort can bring light into darkness. What is needed is a effort to switch on a candle or a lamp. It is a saying that you need two hands to clap but, you don’t need two hands to switch on a light. Any relationship, whether it is between children, husband and wife, among siblings, family, relatives, colleagues, or anybody you interact with. What is needed???
If a photo negative can create unlimited positive prints why can’t we look at our negative experiences and have lots of positives out of them. Once upon a time, windows

were just windows, applications meant an application written on paper, keyboard meant piano, and mouse meant only a Mouse. File was an important document at workplace. Hard drive was long tiring journey, web was only spider’s web. Virus was only reason for getting fever and apple and blackberry were only fruits. And that time was golden time in our lives once upon a time where we had enough time to spend with family, have fun with friends and so on...
Journey of Life!
By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Grief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or some other loss, the stages of grieving are somewhat the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person MUST go through the five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. But, as stressed, ALL five stages must be completed for healing to occur. 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving. 3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing and praying for them to come back.

This girl will change your fortune for she cries in tune.’ She recorded about 10,000 songs in various languages of India and Pakistan including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi. 4-Depression-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, self-pity, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic. For More Info:shabnamsk@hotmail.com
She also gave Pakistan a new genre, which later developed into a category we all know today as national anthems or milli naghme. The new beginning was made during the 1965 war, when Madam sang live on radio and TV some of the most gripping songs ever composed . In 1957, Noor Jahan was awarded the President Award for her acting and singing capabilities. On December 23, 2000, she died as a result of heart failure and was buried in Karachi. The nation had lost a legend.

LIFE AND TIMES OF Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah
“Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.” — Stanley Wolpert 138th Birth Day of Quaid e Azam Pakistan, one of the largest Muslim states in the world, is a living and exemplary monument of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. With his untiring efforts, in-
domitable will, and dauntless courage, he united the Indian Muslims under the banner of the Muslim League and carved out a homeland for them, despite stiff opposition from the Hindu Congress and the British Government. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born in Karachi on December 25, 1876. His father Jinnah Poonja was an Ismaili Khoja of Kathiawar, a prosperous business community. Muhammad Ali received his early education at the Sindh Madrasa and later at the Mission School, Karachi. He went to England for further studies in 1892 at the age of 16. In 1896, Jinnah qualified for the Bar and was called to the Bar in 1897. Muhammad Ali Jinnah started his political career in 1906 when he attended the Calcutta session of the All India National Congress in the capacity of Private Secretary to the President of the Congress. In 1910, he was elected to the Imperial Legislative Council. He sponsored the Waqf Validating Bill, which brought him in touch with other Muslim leaders. In March 1913, Jinnah joined the All India Muslim League. As a member of the Muslim League, Jinnah began to work for HinduMuslim unity. In 1917, the annual sessions of both the Congress and the League were held at Lucknow. The League session was presided over by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It marked the culmination of his efforts towards Hindu-Muslim unity. Here, both the League and the Congress adopted a
scheme of reforms known as the Lucknow Pact. On April 19, 1918, Jinnah married Rutanbai. Their daughter, Dina was born a year later. In 1919, Jinnah resigned from his membership of the Imperial Legislative Council as protest against the “Rowlatt Act”. Until the publication of Nehru Report, Jinnah continued his efforts for Hindu-Muslim unity. The Nehru Report, published in 1928, was severely criticized by all sections of the Muslim community. In December 1928, the National Convention was called to consider the Report. Jinnah proposed some amendments, but they were all rejected. He finally parted ways with the Congress. In 1929, Jinnah presented his famous Fourteen Points in response to the Nehru Report. When he returned from England, he reorganized the Muslim League. In 1934, he was elected as its permanent president. The Provincial Assembly elections of 1937 swept the Congress to power in eight provinces. After almost two years of oppressive rule, Muslims under the leadership of Jinnah, celebrated the Day of Deliverance at the end of Congress rule. The Muslim League held its annual session at Lahore in March 1940. This was presided over by Quaid-i-Azam. The demand for Pakistan was formally
put forward here. This goal was realized on August 14, 1947. Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was appointed as its first Governor General. The establishment of Pakistan brought even greater responsibilities for Jinnah. The refugee problem, the withholding of Pakistani assets by India, and the Kashmir problem were a real test for the Quaid. However, his indomitable will prevailed. He worked out a sound economic policy, established an independent currency and the State Bank for Pakistan. He chose Karachi as the federal capital. However, he did not live long to witness the progress of the state that he had founded. On September 11, 1948, he died after a protracted illness at Karachi. He was buried in Karachi that witnessed the entire nation mourning over an irreparable loss.
