Saudi Arabia executes 47 on terrorism charges

Shia leader Nimr al-Nimr, who led anti-government protests, and al-Qaeda figure Faris al-Zahrani among those executed. Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry says it has executed 47 “terrorists”, including Shia religious leader Nimr al-Nimr and a convicted al-Qaeda leader Faris al-Zahrani. In a press statement read out on state TV on Saturday, the Saudi ministry listed the names of all those it said were already convicted on charges of terrorism. The executions led to protests in a number of countries on Saturday, including Iran - where demonstrators broke into the Saudi embassy and started fires. The death sentence given to Nimr al-Nimr, who led anti-government protests in the country’s east, was confirmed by the Supreme Court in October. He was convicted of sedition, disobedience and bearing arms. Nimr did not deny the political charges against him, but said he never carried weapons or called for violence. Many of the other men executed had been linked to attacks in the

34-nation ‘Islamic military alliance’ to fight terrorism,

Projecting its ambition for regional leadership, Saudi Arabia said Tuesday it has lined up most of the Arab world, NATO member Turkey and several African and Asian countries behind a vaguely defined “Islamic military alliance” against terrorists. The move allows the kingdom, which follows a deeply conservative interpretation of Islam, to cast itself as a leader in the fight against extremism. But absent from the alliance are the Shiite-led countries of Iran and Iraq, as well as Syria, whose government is backed by Tehran. And that omission raises questions about whether the 34-member bloc is primarily intended to present a unified front against extremists — or to also serve as a Sunni deterrent to Iran, Saudi Arabia’s main regional rival. Riyadh supports rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad and has been leading an Arab coalition against Iran-supported Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen since March. It is also part of the U.S.led coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq. The announcement on state media said the Saudi-led alliance is being established because terrorism “should be fought by all means.” Deputy Crown Prince and Defence Minister Mohammed bin Salman said at a rare news conference that

the bloc will develop mechanisms for working with other countries and international bodies to support counterterrorism efforts. Their efforts would not be limited to countering the Islamic State group, he added. “Currently, every Muslim country is fighting terrorism individually ... so co-ordinating efforts is very important,” he said.Though few details were given, the statement said the alliance would not just be countering Sunni extremists but protecting Muslim nations from all terrorists “whatever their doctrine.”When asked if this meant the alliance would also counter Shiite militants, the Saudi defence minister replied the coalition would fight terrorist groups “regardless of their categorization,” particularly in Syria and Iraq, where he said there will be co-operation with the international community. The U.S. and its allies have trained militarily with the Gulf states and other friendly countries in the region for years, encouraging them to work more closely together. Last year, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states joined the U.S. in carrying out airstrikes in Syria against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL. Many of the Arab countries in the new Saudi-led coalition are part of that existing alliance against IS, though their con-

tributions have waned since March, with Gulf efforts diverted to the Yemen offensive. The Saudi endeavour appeared to catch some in Washington offguard. A senior defence official said the U.S. did not know in advance about the plan for the alliance and that officials were working to find out details. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter, visiting Incerlik Air Base in Turkey, said: “In general, at least, it appears that it’s very much aligned with something that we’ve been urging for quite some time, which is greater involvement in the campaign to combat ISIL by Sunni Arab countries.”White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the alliance wouldn’t be a substitute or a replacement for the U.S.-led coalition fighting IS militants, noting the Saudi effort was intended to focus on broader targets. The Saudis have made “important contributions” to the anti-IS coalition led by Washington, “and we anticipate that they will continue to do so,” he said. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel alJubeir said in Paris that members could ask for assistance from the coalition, which would address the requests “on a case-by-case basis.” He did not rule out the deployment

of ground troops.“There is no limit in terms of where the assistance would be provided, or to whom it would be provided,” he said. The new coalition includes nations with large and established armies such as Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt, as well as war-torn countries like Libya and Yemen. African nations that have suffered militant attacks, such as Mali, Chad, Somalia and Nigeria, also are members.Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu of Turkey, the only NATO member in the coalition, called it the “best response to those who are trying to associate terror and Islam.” Hisham Jaber, a retired Lebanese general who heads the Middle East Center for Studies and Political Research in Beirut, called the new bloc “necessary, but not enough.” “Saudi Arabia has enough power, has enough money, to stop those imams or religious (clerics) who are every day encouraging extremists,” he said. Mustafa Alani, the director of the security and defence department at the Gulf Research Center in Geneva, said new counterterrorism strategies, including standing ground forces, are required to confront the changing threat posed by groups such as IS, which is intent on state-building rather than singular attacks. continued......... ISCC and MAT Strongly Condemn The Execution of Shia Saudi Scholar Shaykh Al-Nimr By:Imam Syed Soharwardy ISCC, Calgary The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada and the Muslims Against Terrorism strongly condemn the execution of Muslim Shia cleric Shaykh Nimr Al Nimr in Saudi Arabia. Shaykh Al-Nimr was a prominent religious leader in Saudi Arabia who spoke out against the corruptions and the policies of the Saudi government. Shaykh Al Nimr was a voice of Shia Muslim minority in Saudi Arabia. ISCC and MAT ask the Canadian government to condemn the execution of political opponents in Saudi Arabia. Canadian government should call the Saudi Ambassador and register a strong protest against the human right rights violations in Saudi Arabia. ISCC is asking all Sunni Muslims in particular and Calgarians in general to participate in a peaceful protest rally on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 6:00 PM in front of the Calgary City Hall along with our Shia brothers and sisters, Hussaiani Association of Calgary.

communities in Metro Vancouver, along with all people of conscience and belief in basic human rights, mourn and condemn the execution of Shaykh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, a leading Shia Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia. Shaykh alNimr was executed on the charges of “disobeying and breaking allegiance with the ruler” during a deeply flawed trial in which he was denied the most basic means to prepare for his defence and be represented by legal counsel. Shaykh al-Nimr was known as a peaceful reformist who advocated for the rights of minorities and respect for human rights and human dignity. Although he was a persistent and vocal critic of the Saudi regime, all his activities were peaceful in nature as confirmed by various media outlets and human rights organizations. The Guardian newspaper states, “according to his supporters, the cleric was careful to avoid calling for violence, his advocates insisting he eschewed all but peaceful opposition to the government. On one occasion, he urged protestors to resist police bullets using only “the roar of the word.” Fears are now growing that those sentenced to death as children could be next in line to face the executioner’s sword in Saudi Arabia according to Reprieve, an International human rights organization which works against the death penalty worldwide. This includes Ali al-Nimr, the nephew of Shaykh al-Nimr, who was 17 in February 2012, when he was arrested

trial detention for two years and at no point was allowed to contact his lawyer. He has since been sentenced to death by crucifixion, which in Saudi Arabia involves beheading and public display of the body. We call upon the world leaders, the United Nations and the International Community including the Government of Canada, to condemn the execution of Shaykh alNimr and hold to account the Saudi Arabian authorities for breaches of human rights violations and upholding the basic legal rights of its citizens. At this time, nations of conscience must also seriously re-evaluate their long-term relationship with the regime in Saudi Arabia. Our thoughts and prayers of peace and tranquility are with the family of Shaykh al-Nimr and the community in Saudi Arabia, along with all communities who supported his peaceful stance for human rights and democracy. Pak-based groups to face action if role proved: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assured his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on Tuesday that Islamabad would not hesitate to take “prompt and decisive action” if the involvement of Pakistan-based elements in the attack on an Indian airbase was proved beyond doubt. “PM Nawaz Sharif assured PM Modi that his government would take prompt and decisive action against the terrorists,” the Indian Prime Minister’s office said in a press statement after Mr Sharif called Mr Modi from Colombo to condemn the weekend strike in Pathankot and convey Pakistan’s promise to act on the intelligence given by India about suspected handlers and the mastermind of the terrorist attack.Unlike the Indian statement, the one issued by Mr Sharif’s office did not contain any explicit commitment about action on Islamabad’s part, but said: “Our (Pakistan) government is working on the leads and information provided by the Indian government. We would like to investigate the matter.” Source: DAWN.COM

Pemra advises TV channels to display ‘caution’ on Saudi-Iran conflict

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Wednesday issued guidelines in the wake of the recent SaudiIran row, advising media houses to deal with the matter “professionally.” A notification issued by the body advises all television channels to remain cautious while airing talk shows and analysis on the issue lest they harm Pakistan’s diplomatic relations with friendly countries. “We have noted regretfully that some talk show anchors and hosts have repeatedly used language and expressed views that not only hurt sentiments of people belonging to different sects but can also undermine the government of Pakistan’s efforts to defuse sectarian tensions as a part of the National Action Plan (NAP). Media houses should ideally refrain from airing programs that can result in irreparable damage,” read the notification. The notification, signed by Pemra Operations Manager Fakhruddin Mughal, orders all television channels to follow guidelines issued by the body and avoid broadcasting ‘hateful’ views. Earlier, Pemra had issued a show-cause notice to a private TV channel over airing an “unprofessional” and “irresponsible” program on the issue that hurt the sentiments of a sectarian group. A few TV programs were also muted to censor information by some media groups. Saudi Arabia on Saturday executed 47 people convicted for “terrorism.” Four of those executed were Shias, including prominent cleric Nimr al-Nimr, whose execution has heightened tensions with Iran. The Guards compared Saudi Arabia’s execution of Nimr to attacks carried out by the militant Islamic State group and said that Saudi Arabia’s “medieval act of savagery” in putting Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr to death will lead to the “downfall” of the monarchy. Protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran the other day and Iran’s top leader predicted “divine vengeance” for Saudi Arabia’s execution of the cleric Saudi Arabia and a number of its allies have since cut diplomatic relations with Iran.

CM takes notice of open manholes: ‘Is sealing gutters also my job?’

North Korea says it has conducted ‘successful’ hydrogen bomb test

North Korea said Wednesday it had conducted a hydrogen bomb test, a defiant and surprising move that, if confirmed, would put Pyongyang a big step closer toward improving its still-limited nuclear arsenal. A television anchor read a typically propagandaheavy statement on state TV that said North Korea had tested a “miniaturized” hydrogen bomb, elevating the country’s “nuclear might to the next level” and providing it with a weapon to defend against the United States and its other enemies. The statement said the test was a “perfect success.” The test, if confirmed by outside experts, will lead to a strong push for new, tougher sanctions at the United Nations and further worsen already abysmal relations between Pyongyang and its neighbours. The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday to discuss the implications. North Korean nuclear tests worry Washington and others because each new blast is seen as pushing North Korea’s scientists and engineers closer to their goal of an arsenal of nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the United States. While a hydrogen bomb is much more powerful than an atomic bomb, it is also much harder to make. In a hydrogen bomb, radiation from a nuclear fission explosion sets off a fusion reaction responsible for a powerful blast and radioactivity. North Korea is thought to have a handful of rudimentary nuclear bombs and has spent decades trying to perfect a multistage, long-range missile to eventually carry smaller versions of those bombs. After several failures, it put its first satellite into space with a long-range rocket launched in December 2012. Experts say that ballistic missiles and rockets in satellite launches share similar bodies, engines and other technology. The UN called the 2012

launch a banned test of ballistic missile technology. Some analysts say the North hasn’t likely achieved the technology needed to manufacture a miniaturized warhead that could fit on a long-range missile capable of hitting the U.S. But there is a growing debate on just how far the North has advanced in its secretive nuclear and missile programs. In the first indication of a possible test, the U.S. Geological Survey measured an earthquake Wednesday morning with a magnitude of 5.1. An official from the Korea Metrological Administration, South Korea’s weather agency, said the agency believed the earthquake was caused artificially based on an analysis of the seismic waves and because it originated 49 kilometres north of Kilju, the northeastern area where North Korea’s main nuclear test site is located. The country conducted all three previous atomic detonations there. The test is a surprise, both in its purported type and its timing. North Korea hadn’t conducted an atomic explosion since early 2013, and leader Kim Jong-un did not mention the country’s nuclear weapons in his New Year’s speech. Outside analysts speculated that Kim was worried about deteriorating ties with China, the North’s last major ally, which has shown signs of greater frustration at provocations and a possible willingness to allow strong UN sanctions. The size of Wednesday’s quake is bigger than seismic activity reported in previous atomic bomb tests. Yonhap news agency reported that quake monitoring agencies detected magnitudes of seismic activity of 3.7 in 2006; 4.5 in 2009 and 4.9 in 2013. After the North’s third atomic test, in February 2013, Pyongyang launched a campaign of bellicose rhetoric that included threats to launch a nuclear attack on the United States and Seoul. North Korea claimed in 2013 that it had scrapped the 1953 armistice that ended fighting in the Korean War. Pyongyang has also restarted a plutonium nuclear reactor shuttered after a 2007 nuclear deal that later fell apart. Since the elevation of young leader Kim in 2011, North Korea has ramped up angry rhetoric against the leaders of allies Washington and Seoul and the U.S.-South Korean annual military drills it considers invasion preparation. kingdom between 2003 and 2006, blamed on al-Qaeda. Zahrani, described by Saudi media as al-Qaeda’s top religious leader in the kingdom, was one of them. He was detained in 2004 while allegedly in possession of weapons. An Egyptian citizen and a Chadian citizen were also among the executed, the ministry said. The rest were all Saudis. Reuters news agency reported four of those executed were Shia.Saudi Ministry of Justice spokesman Mansour al-Qufari said: “The judiciary is objective and we deal objectively with the cases on merit.“There is no difference between what a person does regardless of his ethnic origin or affiliation, or what he believes. We deal with facts and criminal intent.”Some were beheaded while others were shot by firing squad, Mansur al-Turki, Saudi interior ministry spokesman, said. Notably absent from the list was Nimr’s nephew, Ali. He was arrested at the age of 17. Appeal for calm Nimr’s execution prompted calls for demonstrations in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province and in other countries of the Middle East, but Mohammed al-Nimr, Nimr’s brother, appealed for calm. “This action will spark anger of [Shia] youths” in Saudi Arabia, but “we reject violence and clashing with authorities”, he said. Nimr spent more than a decade studying theology in predominantly Shia Iran.In Tehran, a number of protesters broke into Saudi Arabia’s embassy and started fires on Saturday night, after gathering there to denounce Nimr’s execution. As of 22:00 GMT on Saturday, special police forces had secured the embassy, and Iran’s foreign ministry called for calm after the protesters had been dispersed by police. Source: Al Jazeera Staff

India admits security gaps in deadly air base attack India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has admitted to “some gaps” in security that allowed six gunmen to wage a deadly attack at an Indian air-force base in Pathankot near the border with Pakistan. Indian forces killed six men who attacked the country’s largest military base located in northern Punjab state, said Parrikar, adding that seven Indian soldiers had been killed and 20 others injured in the gun battle that lasted for nearly 80 hours. It has emerged that the gunmen hijacked a police officer’s car but that his call to a colleague, after he was dumped by the roadside, was not taken seriously. Indian intelligence agencies are saying that the attackers came from Pakistan, with the head of National Investigation Agency, Sharad Kumar, saying that the attackers came from Pakistan without elaborating further. The defence minister, who visited the base on Tuesday, said that combing operations will continue until Wednesday to make sure that no other attackers or booby traps remain at the facility that houses a fleet of Russianorigin MiG-21 fighter jets and attack helicopters, along with other military hardware. The attack, which has jolted the Indian security establishment, comes a week after Narendra Modi became the first Indian prime minister in 12 years to visit Pakistan. During the surprise meeting between Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Lahore, the two leaders promised to revive talks that were suspended by New Delhi last year. The apparently well-planned assault on a strategic military target just 25km from the border has put pressure on an attempt by the two leaders to improve historically fraught relations between the two nations. The South Asian neighbours have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, two over the disputed Kashmir region - which is claimed in its entirety by both. In a sign that both want the incipient dialogue to continue, Sharif called Modi on Tuesday to convey his “sorrow and

grief” at the losses from the air base attack. Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said Islamabad was in touch with the Indian government and working on leads being provided by Delhi. “Living in the same region and with a common history, the two countries should remain committed to a sustained dialogue process. The challenge of terrorism calls for strengthening our resolve to a cooperative approach,” Khalilullah was quoted as saying by DPA news agency. According to a statement issued by the Indian government, Modi called for “firm and immediate action against those responsible for the air base attack”, based on specific and actionable information provided to Pakistan. A new round of talks between the two countries’ foreign secretaries has been tentatively scheduled for January 15, but local channel NDTV reported that it might be delayed due to the brazen attack. On Monday, the United Jihad Council (UJC), an alliance of pro-Pakistan armed groups based in the Pakistani-administered part of the divided Kashmir region, claimed responsibility for the assault. The group’s leader warned that their attacks “can engulf all of India” if the issue of Kashmir’s divided rule is not resolved. “Whenever they want, wherever they want, they can target the enemy,” UJC leader Syed Salahuddin said in a voice recording released by the group, which has been leading an armed rebellion against Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan region. Iran-Saudi spat and ‘red lines’ in the sand

The verbal tit-for-tat between regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia and Iran continued on Tuesday after Riyadh’s diplomatic missions were attacked following the kingdom’s execution of 47 people, including a Shia cleric. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani called Saudi Arabia’s decision to cut diplomatic ties with Tehran an attempt to “cover its crime” after prominent religious leader Nimr al-Nimr was among those put to death last week. Rouhani’s comments were the latest in the diplomatic spat between regional heavyweights that has raised international concerns over peace efforts to end the wars in Syria and Yemen, with both nations supporting opposite sides. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian Prince Waleed Bin Talal - a renowned billionaire businessman - said on Twitter he is putting a halt to business projects and investments in Iran. Riyadh severed relations with Iran on Sunday after its embassy in Tehran was set ablaze during protests against the executions. But Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Tuesday the dispute will not hinderpolitical negotiations over the Syrian conflict expected later this month. “The recent tensions .. will not affect ... the operations that United Nations carries out alongside the international community to achieve a political solution in Geneva soon,” Saudi news agency SPA quoted Jubeir as saying, after talks with UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura. John Sfakianakis, an economist and former adviser to the Saudi government, told Al Jazeera that Riyadh and Tehran must take the necessary precautions to avoid a

further escalation. “Both sides are aware of each other’s red lines,” he said. Protests continued in Bahrain, which is among a number of states in the region that severed ties with Iran in solidarity with Saudi Arabia. Kuwait recalled its ambassador from Iran on Tuesday and Bahrain announced a ban on flights to and from the country. Sfakianakis also warned against the potential economic impact that the dispute could inflict. “For both sides, dropping [oil] prices are not good news as well as for other oil-producing countries,” he said. “Market forces do determine prices but - in the eyes of Riyadh - Iran is not helping to increase the prices when they announce they will flood the market with one million barrels whenever the [international] sanctions are lifted.” Source: Al-Jazeera

B.C. government, with accounts flush from property tax earnings, cool on petition calling for real estate market intervention A new petition urging B.C. politicians to limit offshore investment and exploitation of tax loopholes in Vancouver real estate is getting a cool reception from Victoria as provincial coffers overflow with property transfer tax revenues in a red-hot housing market. The new petition urges politicians to intervene to make housing affordable for “the next generation” and claims “foreign ownership” in Lower Mainland real estate “is destroying our cities” and “the hopes and dreams of countless families.” It is the latest of several online petitions circulated in B.C. as home prices continue to skyrocket in the Vancouver area. Metro Vancouver home sales set an all-time record in 2015, the region’s real estate board said Tuesday, with the benchmark price for detached properties surging 24.3 per cent year-over-year in December to $1.248 million. While the real estate industry and B.C. government have claimed the impact of offshore investment on B.C. home prices is minimal, many residents and analysts believe the driving force in price gains has been a flood of money connected to Mainland China. Jurisdictions with real estate investment markets similar to Vancouver’s, such as some Australia cities and Hong Kong, track and attempt to limit foreign ownership of homes. But Canada does not even collect data on offshore buying. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson on Tuesday acknowledged — apparently for the first time — concerns about foreign investment, citing “stark and alarming” proof that Lower Mainland housing is “divorced from local incomes.” Reacting to stunning rises in B.C. Assessment figures this week, Robertson issued a statement reiterating his government’s call for a speculation and luxury home tax to cool Vancouver’s market. He cited “runaway price growth” across Metro Vancouver and a $2.5-million average price for detached homes in Vancouver. While Robertson had previously slammed a recent study showing the increasing dominance of Mainland China-linked buyers in Vancouver, on Tuesday he stated: “We also need far better tracking of data on international investment and absentee ownership from both the federal and provincial governments.” The new B.C. petition says foreign investors are increasingly using Vancouver homes to store wealth “in lieu of banks,” and “many of these offshore investors are taking advantage of loopholes to reduce or eliminate taxes paid on the sale of these houses, thereby denying the Canadian taxpayers any benefit from their purchase.” The petition asks for legislators to immediately collect data on foreign ownership of homes and catalogue how many of these homes are vacant, and to “limit purchases of homes by non-Canadian residents for income tax purposes.” B.C.’s

government has generally voiced disapproval of action to limit foreign ownership, but as public pressure increased last year B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Victoria is considering tweaking the property tax code to help new home buyers get into the market. Spokesman Jamie Edwardson said de Jong was not available for an interview Tuesday. Speaking to petitioner demands, Edwardson said the province is still looking at ways to help first-time home buyers, but “any measure considered would need to have the desired effect without undermining the equity that British Columbians have built up in their homes, and without discouraging foreign investment in B.C.’s economy.” Several months ago, de Jong had seemed to acknowledge an unfair playing field in B.C.’s housing market, reportedly telling the Globe and Mail that he planned to close a property transfer tax loophole that allows some wealthy foreign investors to dodge taxes. Studies at that time had suggested that buyers believed to be transferring or borrowing against funds from Mainland China increasingly dominate Vancouver’s single-family home market and that significant portions of these buyers could be avoiding provincial and federal taxes by the ways that they represent their occupations and ownership. “Canadians, the vast majority of whom pay the taxes they owe, want to know that everyone is doing the same,” de Jong was quoted telling reporters in Victoria at the time. On Tuesday, however, Edwardson distanced de Jong from those comments and suggested the minister had not promised specifically to act on the property transfer tax “loophole” issue. Pundits have noted that B.C.’s budget surplus this year was largely supported by a massive increase in Victoria’s property transfer tax take, which is projected to be $1.1 billion for the fiscal year — an amount fuelled by Metro Vancouver’s housing market. That could explain Victoria’s reluctance to look at foreign ownership. Source: The Province

HSBC bank cuts off services to Muslim charity

Banking giant HSBC has stopped offering financial services to the charity Islamic Relief, which becomes the latest Muslim organisation to have its ties with the company cut. Islamic Relief UK was told by HSBC its activities in “high-risk jurisdictions” posed a challenge to the bank due to pressure from US authorities to deal with money laundering, according to a statement published on the charity’s website on Monday. “We were in discussions with HSBC during 2014 through which we learned that the bank felt it would be difficult to continue its banking relationship with us due to the nature of our work,” said Imran Madden, Islamic Relief’s UK director, in the statement. “At this point they invited us to end the relationship - which they did themselves at the end of the year when we declined.” The charity, which was founded in the UK and is involved in relief efforts across the world, said payments it made to vendors who used HSBC’s services were held up by the bank for months. Islamic Relief said the delays affected its attempts to buy tents for victims of last year’s earthquake in Nepal. Other banks and financial providers were helping the organisation ensure aid deliveries reached areas they were needed, the statement said. A HSBC spokesperson said the bank did not comment on individual customers for privacy reasons but it never took decisions based on a customer’s race or religion. “Whenever we review a customer relationship, we gather information from a wide range of sources and take a number of factors into consideration,” the spokesperson told Al Jazeera. “For a business customer, these factors would typically include the type of activities the business is involved in, the jurisdictions in which it operates and the products and services it uses. “Although we

Emotional Obama unveils plan to cut gun violence

president, the government’s guidance to gunsellers lacks the legal oomph of a new law, such as the one Obama and like-minded lawmakers tried, but failed, to pass in 2013. The Justice Department said online the guidance “has no regulatory effect and is not intended to create or confer any rights, privileges, or benefits in any matter, case, or proceeding.” What’s more, none of the steps would have probably prevented any of the recent mass shootings that Obama invoked in the East Room: Aurora, Oak Creek, Charleston, Newtown, to name just a few. But Obama defiantly rejected that critique, dismissing it as the tired trope of gun lobbyists who question “why bother trying?” “I reject that thinking,” Obama said. “We maybe can’t save everybody, but we could save some.” Hoping to give the issue a human face, the White House assembled a cross-section of Americans affected by searing recent gun tragedies, including former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Mark Barden, whose son was shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School, introduced the president with a declaration that “we are better than this.” Obama readily conceded the executive steps will be challenged in court, a prediction quickly echoed by Republicans. Chuck James, a former federal prosecutor who practices firearms law at the firm Williams Mullen, said opponents are likely to challenge Obama’s authority to define what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling guns beyond what’s laid out in the law. The White House asserted confidence Obama was acting legally, and said Justice Department and White House lawyers had worked diligently to ensure the steps were watertight. Other new steps include 230 new examiners the FBI will hire to process background checks, aiming to prevent delays that enabled the accused gunman in Charleston, South Carolina, to get a gun when the government took too long. Obama is also asking the government to research smart-gun technology to reduce accidental shootings and asking Congress for $500 million to improve mental health care. Other provisions aim to track lost or stolen guns better and prevent trusts or corporations from buying dangerous weapons without background checks. Obama’s announcement carved a predictably partisan fault line through the presidential campaign. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, both competing for the nomination from Obama’s party, pledged to build on his actions if elected. The Republican field formed a chorus of voices vowing to annul the whole package, with Marco Rubio claiming “Obama is obsessed with undermining the Second Amendment.” “Rather than focus on criminals and terrorists, he goes after the most law-abiding of citizens,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican. “His words and actions amount to a form of intimidation that undermines liberty.” The National Rifle Association, the largest gun group, panned Obama’s plan and said it was “ripe for abuse,” although the group didn’t specify what steps, if any, it will take to oppose or try to block it. Tears streaking his cheeks, U.S. President Barack Obama launched a final-year push Tuesday to tighten sales of firearms in the U.S., using his presidential powers in the absence of tougher gun restrictions that Congress has refused to pass. The president struck a combatitive tone as he came out with plans for expanded background checks and other modest measures that have drawn consternation from gun rights groups, which Obama accused of making Congress their hostage. Palpable, too, was Obama’s extreme frustration at having made such little progress on gun control since the slaughter of 20 firstgraders in Connecticut confronted the nation more than three years ago. “First-graders,” Obama said woefully, resting his chin on his hand and wiping away tears as he recalled the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. “Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad.” Obama’s 10-point plan to keep guns from those who shouldn’t have them marked a concession by the president: He’ll leave office without securing the new gun control laws he’s repeatedly and desperately implored Congress to pass. Although Obama, acting alone, can take action around the margins, only Congress can enact more sweeping changes that gun-control advocates say are the only way to truly stem a scourge of mass shootings. “It won’t happen overnight,” Obama said. “It won’t happen during this Congress. It won’t happen during my presidency.” But, he added, optimistically, “a lot of things don’t happen overnight.” The centrepiece of Obama’s plan is an attempt to narrow the loophole that exempts gun sales from background checks if the seller isn’t a federal registered dealer. With new federal “guidance,” the administration is clarifying that even those who sell just a few weapons at gun shows, flea markets or online can be deemed dealers and required to conduct checks on prospective buyers. Whether that step can make a significant dent in unregulated gun sales is an open question, and one not easily answered. Millions of guns are sold annually in informal settings outside of gun shops, including many through private sales arranged online. But the Obama administration acknowledged it couldn’t quantify how many gun sales would be subjected to the new background checks, nor how many unregistered gun sellers would now have to obtain a license. Easily reversed by a future can’t always be specific about why we decide to close an account, a decision of this kind is never taken lightly and is never due to the customer’s race or religion.” Islamic Relief would not be taking legal action to force the bank to reverse its decision, its spokesperson told Al Jazeera. In August 2014, Al Jazeera spoke to a number of organisations, including charities, mosques, think tanks, and community groups, whose accounts had been shut down by HSBC. A BBC Radio 4 investigation last July found HSBC could have been influenced by the UAE to end its ties with a number of Muslim groups in the UK. The UAE has added dozens of Western Muslim groups to its list of terror organisations, including Islamic Relief and others that had their bank accounts closed by HSBC. Speaking to Al Jazeera in November, an Islamic Relief spokesperson said the charity “categorically denied terrorist links and is in the process of challenging its listing through the Emirati courts”. F A I T H Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for.” ‘Revelation’ of Sahih Bukhari

Tawheed: The essence of Islam Tawheed (Islamic monotheism) is the greatest foundation of Islamic belief. In fact, a person is considered as Muslim if he/she accepts that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His slave and His messenger to humankind. Almighty Allah says in the Noble Qur’an: “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of (all) existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is (presently) before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Qur’an, 2:255) In these marvelous verses, Allah describes Himself as the only one — most powerful, ever-living Lord of us. Tawheed is the bedrock of Islam and it states that it is Allah Who has created the universe with what-

ever is in it and administers it. What we deduce from the operation of the universe and call ‘natural laws’ are, in fact, Allah’s regular ways of creating things and events and administering the universe. According to Islam, all religions revealed to the prophets (may Allah exalt their mention) have the same essence and knowledge of Tawheed and unity of Allah; but, with the time, their messages were misinterpreted, mixed with superstition, and degenerated into some rituals. That was the same message with which Adam was sent down to earth, the same knowledge that Allah revealed to Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus), may Allah exalt their mention, and the last Prophet sent to humanity, Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Islam rejects characterizing Allah in any human form or depicting Him as favoring certain individuals or nations on the basis of wealth, power or race. However, our human minds are often in search of understanding the concept of Allah in materialistic ways, although we are not capable to completely comprehend this concept. When Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) contemporaries asked him about God, Allah revealed the chapter of Ikhlas (Qur’anic chapter no. 112), which is considered as the motto of Tawheed, saying: “Say (O Muhammad), “He is Allah, (who is) One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor was He begotten. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.” (Qur’an, 112:1-4) The Creator must be a different nature from the things created, because if He is of the same nature as they are, He will be temporal and will, therefore, need a maker. If the maker is not temporal, He must be eternal. But if He is eternal, He cannot be caused. If nothing apart from Him causes Him to continue to exist, He must be selfsufficient and self-subsistent. If He does not depend upon anything for the continuance of His own existence, this existence can have no end. The Creator is therefore Eternal and Everlasting. Allah

Says (what means): “He is the first and the last.” (Qur’an, 57:3) In Islam, Allah is known by His names and attributions and the manifestation of these names in the universe. Another aspect of Tawheed in Islam is that it implies the equity and unity of all people in their relation with Allah. Thus, people of different social strata were not created by separate deities with varying levels of power, since this would violate Tawheed by putting barriers between them. Instead, social dimension of Tawheed states that the same Allah created everyone, and so all people have the same fundamental essence. In fact, the noblest person in Allah’s sight is the one who is most Allah-conscious. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Your Lord is One. You are from Adam and Adam was created from dust. An Arab is not superior to a non-Arab, nor a white person over a black person, except for his/her piety and righteousness.” (Ahmad) Courtesy: islamweb.net

Zikr, Hamad o Naat , Darood o Salam and Eid Milad un Nabi (saw) Celebrates in Town

The Milad Celebrated:At Fiji Islamic Centre by IMAC By Zeeshan Ahmed A Grand Milad un-Nabi (S) and Super Ziarat of many holy relics from Prophet Muhammad (S), the Khulafa e Rashideen, Imam Husayn(R) and more was held on Dec 24th, at the Riverside Banquet Hall in Surrey. This spiritual gathering was an overwhelming success with over 1,000 people which sponsored and organized by the Naqshbandiyya-Nazimiyya Islamic Centre of Vancouver. The beautiful ambience was enriched by volunteers handing out flags, banners and pins for all guests to commemorate the event. The Milad began with children, dressed in the Sunnah and beautiful turbans, walking in a procession, waving their green flags and banners bearing the name of Prophet Muhammad (S) and reciting Naats and Salawats. Following these beautiful praises, the audience took part in a heartfelt zikr. Shaykh As-Sayed Nurjan Mirahmadi shared words of wisdom and reminded the audience that every action is according to intentions. Are we doing our prayers, fasting, and charity to show off to people, or are we doing it out of sincere love for our Creator? It is really important to have love and pure intentions in our worship, because our actions will be judged by Almighty Allah (SWT). He stressed the importance of the Prophet (S) Akhlaq (character and good manners) and to avoid judging people. Traditionally, the students of knowledge would spend 20

years, and still may have not received an Islamic Authorization as they may not have passed in their character. The Mashaykh il kiram were teaching the fountains of taste(Zawq), beauty of Islam, and perfection of character. Nowadays, the world is in danger; everyone has access to resources (books, Internet, etc.) and you can even become hafiz online. However, there is no more love and good character. What happened to the Akhlaq of “Don’t cheat, don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t backbite, don’t judge, don’t break someone’s heart”, otherwise all your ilm will be thrown away, so when we do things for our Prophet (S) we should show the highest Honour and Respect. The Prophet (S) said you won’t have Iman until you love me more than you love yourself. We can do the best for ourselves, but why NOT for our Prophet (S)? my “My Shaykh’s teachings; for Sayyidina Muhammad(s) you give the best of what you have.” said Shaykh Nurjan. When we look the best, smell the best and have the best of characters, then people will say Wow, this is Islam. Fitna (confusion) has spread everywhere, and if we keep remaining silent the oppression will spread even further. It’s time to awaken and raise the flags of Love and to show we are Lovers. All we have is the love of our nation and the love of our Prophet, who brought us the Holy Quran, Holy Islam and we owe our whole life for that. Maulana A. L. Naumani eloquently

spoke in Urdu, He recommended that people should love the Prophet (S) as much as they can, do salawats in abundance, listen and follow the message of our beloved Prophet (s), educate ourselves and learn knowledge, perform our Salah five times a day, respect our parents, earn halal earnings, avoid haram, not to hurt people, speak with sweetness, have good character, recite Quran every day, feed the poor, help people who are in need. When we really love the Prophet(S) we will follow in his ways and adopt the Quran and Sunnah in our daily life. As the Super Ziarat of the holy relics was prepared, hundreds of attendees lined up to witness these sacred artifacts. Everyone had the opportunity to view the relics and make special prayers and share in divine blessings.. The evening concluded with a Darood and Salaam upon the Prophet Muhammad (S). Pir Afzal Ahmed presented the soul touching and heart melting final supplication and asked for forgiveness and blessing of Allah (SWT) in this Holy Month. A delicious banquet dinner was served to all guests.

Celebration At Bullay Shah Academy of Canada On Dec 26,Jasne Eid-E-Milad-Un-Nabi (S.A.W) program took place at Bullay Shah Academy of Canada in Surrey. The program started with the recitation of Quran. Mr. Raheel Aslam did the MC, He invited many local Naat Khawns to recite heart touching Hamd o Naat s and Nasheeds included Mohsin Raza, Amir Khan, Perwez Iqbal, Malik Afzal, Muzammil Ahmed, Chacha Shareef, Sohail Ahmed, Naseer Pirzada, Hafiz Ashfaq, Saleem Khan and Ch Ijaz. President of Bullay Shah Academy Pir Afzal Ahmed delivered a stunning bayan in Urdu in which he focused on the birth of Prophet Mohammad(SAW) and love with Allah and his messenger Mohammad(pbuh). He said that all Muslims try to understand the respect of Mohammad(pbuh) and should be true followers by practicing. He derived Quraan: Sura Al-Anbiya Ch 21 Ayat 117 “Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatan lil AAalameena”“And We have sent

you not but as a mercy for the ‘Alameen” (Mankind, Jinn and all that exists). He described the Prophet Mohammad and Ahmed (PBUH) name in depth. Sura Thouba:128. Now hath come unto you An Apostle from amongst Yourselves: it grieves him That ye should perish: Ardently anxious is he Over you: to the Believers. Is He most kind and merciful and Pir Afzal also recited Sura Al Araf: 206 “Surely, those who are with your Lord (angels) are never too proud to perform acts of worship to Him, but they glorify His Praise and prostrate before Him.” Pir Afzal said unfortunately today our actions are not as per the teachings of Quran and Sunnah. We should praise Allah and His messenger Prophet Mohammad (saw) all the time and become a practice Muslim. After Darood o Salam at the end he made Duaa for all Muslim ummah. .

Jordan summons Iran’s ambassador as Turkish president calls execution of Shia leader in Saudi Arabia “a domestic issue”. Qatar has become the latest country to back Saudi Arabia in its dispute with Iran, recalling its ambassador to Tehran on Wednesday in response to the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions last weekend. Jordan, Djibouti, and Turkey also expressed pro-Saudi positions on Wednesday after the embassy attacks in Iran that followed the execution of a renowned Shia leader

in Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said the execution of 47 men for terrorism charges in Saudi Arabia was “a domestic issue”. One of those put to death was Shia Sheikh Nimr alNimr - a move that stirred sectarian anger across the region. “Forty-six of those who were executed are Sunni and they are executed because they are affiliated with al-Qaeda. One of them was a Shia religious leader. This decision was previously taken and Saudi Arabia implemented it. This is their decision,” Erdogan said in a speech in the capital Ankara. The president also said those who remained silent about the deaths of people in Syria’s civil war were causing an uproar over the execution of one person in Saudi Arabia, apparently referring to Iran though he did not name names.

gered various global responses - here’s what they’re saying. Diplomatic tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran began with the kingdom’s execution of 47 people convicted of terrorism charges - including a prominent Shia cleric - and later saw attacks on Saudi diplomatic posts in the Islamic Republic. Some nations have followed the Saudis’ lead in severing or downgrading ties with Iran, while others have offered words of caution aimed at cooling the war of words before it escalates further. Here is a look at where countries stand: The Main Actors:

support of its Sunni rulers - was the first to cut ties with Iran. While backing Saudi Arabia, , Sudan and Kuwait - The oil-rich country is recalling its ambassador from Tehran, but it is not immediately clear how Kuwaiti-Iranian diplomatic ties will be affected. Martyrdom of Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr By Raz Ahmed The three Islamic Centers of Lower Mainland, Aza e Hussain Association of BC, Al-Kawther Islamic Center & Al-Mustafa Academy joined hands and organized a program on Sunday, 3 January, 2016, to pay respect and condolences to Ayatollah Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr who was martyred in Saudia Arabia. Sheikh Nimr was born in 1959 in Al-Awamiyah, Saudia Arabia. He was popular amongst youth and critical of the Saudi regime. He propagated equal rights & free election in the country. He was first arrested in 2006 for his dissent against the authorities. After a series of protests in 2012 the Saudi regime responded with brutal clamp down and his arrest, to which he famously responded and called for protestors to resist police bullets

using “the roar of the word” rather than violence. The Sheikh met his end, without being charged & without a fair trial by the Saudi Arabia’s rulers on January 2, 2016. The program was well attended by the members of all the Islamic Centers of Lower Mainland. The Presidents of the Islamic Centers and the head of youth organization expressed their sorrow, grief & concern over the execution of such a respected scholar of high pedestal, Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr. The Islamic Scholars present compared this sad, sudden & shocking execution through the lens of history, teachings of Allah (swt), the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and his household (Ahlul Bayt). The program ended with Du’a for martyrs in particular and the well being of oppressed Muslims in general. 3$,*1

Types of Housing

Ownership

By:Imran Habib and Harj Uppal Remax BluePrint realty While there are a variety of housing ownership interests, the most common include the following: Freehold – A freehold interest (also known as a fee simple) is the more precise term for what we ordinarily refer to as “ownership” of a home. The owner of the freehold interest has full use and control of the land and the buildings on it, subject to any rights of the Crown, local land-use bylaws, and any other restrictions in place at the time of purchase. Strata Title – The strata title form of ownership is designed to provide exclusive use and ownership of a specific housing unit (the strata lot) which is contained in a larger property (the strata project), plus shared use and ownership of the common areas such as halls, grounds, garages, elevators, etc. This type of ownership is used for duplexes, apartment blocks, townhouse complexes, warehouses, and many other types of buildings. In additiion, some single family home developments may be part of a bare-land strata development. Because ownership of the common space is shared, the owners also share financial responsibility for its maintenance. Leasehold – In some cases, you might purchase the right to use a residential property for a long, but limited, period of time. The owner of this right of use has a type of ownership called a leasehold interest. This type of ownership is used most often for townhouses or apartments built on city-owned land. It is also used occasionally for single detached homes on farm land, on First Nation reserves, and for apartments where the owner of the freehold interest of an entire apartment block sells leasehold interests in individual apartment units to other “owners.” Leasehold interests are frequently set for periods of 99 years, but regardless of the length of the original term, you will only be able to purchase the remaining portion. Of course, the shorter the remaining portion, the less you, or the person who eventually purchases from you, will be willing to pay for the leasehold interest. Cooperative – In the cooperative form of ownership, each owner owns a share in a company or cooperative association which, in turn, owns a property containing a number of housing units. Each shareholder is assigned one particular unit in which to reside.

20 P A R E N T Your Role as the Parent of Toddler Rabiul Awaal 27, 1437 January 8, 2016

Part of the difficulty you experience may lie in your own ambivalence about your toddler growing up. As a parent, you are often so focused on your children that you don’t notice how you are changing and the challenges you face. Newborns require unconditional love and constant attention day and night. Your goal is to meet your babies’ needs, figure out what is wrong, and make it better. Starting with toddlerhood, your goals change. While still providing unconditional love, you also need to help socialize your children and teach them to tolerate frustration, learn to be adaptable, and delay gratification. In meeting these grand goals of toddlerhood, you can feel the “Push-Pull” of development. On the one hand, it can be thrilling to hear your children’s new words, watch them explore new areas, and see them develop relationships with others. On the other hand, each step takes your children a little further away from you. They no longer need you to carry them; others can understand your children and meet their needs. Watching them grow can feel bittersweet. At the same time that your toddlers are becoming more independent, they still need a lot of care. At times, what you need and

what your toddler needs can be in conflict. For example, after a long day of running errands with a stroller through a crowded mall, you may need some down time, and at the same time, your toddler may need to get out and run. Or you may need quiet, and your toddler may need to practice using his voice. Or you may need to visit with other grown-ups, and your toddler may need to nap in his crib. In addition, everyone has ideas of how toddlers should behave based on his own upbringing. In some families, children are precious little beings to be cared for and catered to. In others, children are expected to be seen and not heard. Most families fall somewhere in the middle. Your response to your toddler’s behavior may in part be based on the parenting style your own parents adhered to when you and your siblings were growing up. While there may be discussions with your parenting partner about whether or not to pick up the baby or let him cry or how much of a schedule to follow, toddlerhood with all of its areas of growth tends to have many more opportunities for these differences in approach to appear. If not discussed openly, these differences can erode your confidence and lead to parental conflict. Expectations also play a role in how you view your child and yourself. On the one hand, you may expect your little one to sit quietly with you, read books, and play. You may expect to be endlessly patient and loving. The reality, on the other hand, may be a rambunctious, strongly opinionated child. And you may find yourself exhausted and shorttempered. You may hold your child and yourself to unrealistic standards and as a result, spend a lot of your energy feeling

as if you or your child are falling short. In the next section of this article, we will examine toddler behavior to help you set realistic expectations for your child. In addition, parents can feel conflicted about setting limits. On the one hand, you want children who are well behaved, handle various situations, and follow instructions. On the other hand, you can be concerned that in setting limits you are curbing your children’s natural curiosity and squelching their personalities. In the end, you may flip-flop and second guess yourself. It is important to set limits while still providing your children with the freedom to explore and grow. Why is drinking water important? How much water should you drink?

Written by James McIntosh Many people may take drinking water for granted, but keeping hydrated can have a huge impact on overall health. Despite how crucial it is that people drink enough water, a significant amount of people may be failing to drink recommended levels of fluids each day. Woman drinking water. The Institute of Medicine recommend that men achieve a daily fluid intake of around 3 liters and that women take in 2.2 liters. Around of 70% of the body is comprised of water, and around of 71% of the planet’s surface is covered by water. Perhaps it is the ubiquitous nature of water that means that drinking enough of it each day is not at the top of many people’s lists of healthy priorities? One part of the body that relies on adequate water intake is the kidneys. The kidneys are organs that might not get as much attention as the heart or lungs, but they are responsible for many functions that help keep the body as healthy as possible. But what happens to the kidneys when we do not drink enough water? And what can be done to improve our levels of hydration? On World Kidney Day, we take a look at the role of drinking enough water for two of the most important organs in the body. Why do we need to drink water? Water is needed by all the cells and organs in the body in order for them to function properly. It is also used to lubricate the joints, protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, regulate body temperature and assist the passage of food through the intestines. Although some of the water required by the body is obtained through foods with a high water content - soups, tomatoes, oranges - the majority is gained through drinking water and other beverages. During normal everyday functioning, water is lost by the body, and this needs to be replaced. It is noticeable that we lose water through activities such as sweating and urination, but water is even lost when breathing. Drinking water, be it from the tap or a bottle, is the best source of fluid for the body. Beverages such as milk and juices are also decent sources of water, but beverages containing alcohol and caffeine, such as

soft drinks, coffee and beer, are less than ideal due to having diuretic properties, meaning that they cause the body to release water. How much water should you drink? The recommended amount of water that should be drunk per day varies from person to person depending on factors such as how active they are and how much they sweat. There is no universally agreed upon threshold of water consumption that must be reached, but there is a general level of consensus as to what a healthy amount is. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), an adequate intake for men is approximately 13 cups (3 liters) a day. For women, an adequate intake is around 9 cups (2.2 liters). Many people may have heard the phrase, “Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day,” which works out at around 1.9 liters and is close to the IOM’s recommendation for women. Drinking “8 by 8” is an easy-toremember amount that can put people on the right track in terms of water consumption. Water also helps dissolve minerals and nutrients so that they are more accessible to the body, as well as helping transport waste products out of the body. It is these two functions that make water so vital to the kidneys. What do the kidneys do? The kidneys are two small fist-sized organs that are shaped like beans. They are located in the middle of the back, on either side of the spine and situated just below the rib cage.Despite their importance, the kidneys can sometimes receive less attention than other organs in the body. “The role of the kidneys is often underrated when we think about our health,” state Kidney Health Australia.Cross-section of the kidneys. The role of the kidneys in keeping the body healthy may be underrated in relation to the heart and the lungs. “In fact, the kidneys play an important role in the daily workings of our body. They are so important to health that nature gave us two kidneys to cover the possibility that one might be lost to an injury. They are so important that with no kidney function, death occurs within a few days.”A crucial function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body via urine.

The kidneys also regulate the levels of salt, potassium and acid in the body and produce hormones that influence the performance of other organs. When we eat and drink, nutrients and minerals enter the bloodstream in order to be transported around the body and used for energy, growth, maintenance or repair. The blood also passes through the kidneys where it is filtered, and any waste products and excess nutrients and water are removed and sent to the bladder for expulsion. Every day, the kidneys filter around 200 quarts of fluid. Of these, approximately 2 quarts are removed from the body in the form of urine, and 198 are recovered by the bloodstream. If the kidneys do not function properly through kidney disease, waste products and excess fluid can build up inside the body. Untreated, chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, whereby the organs stop working, and either dialysis or kidney transplantation is required. Water is important for the workings of the kidneys, not only for helping to initially dissolve the nutrients, but for ensuring that waste products, bacteria and proteins do not build up in the kidneys and the bladder. These can lead to dangerous infections and painful kidney stones. How does not drinking enough affect the kidneys? Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the second most common type of infection in the body and account for around 8.1 million visits to health care providers in the US every year. If infections spread to the upper urinary tract, including the kidneys, permanent damage can be caused. Sudden kidney infections (acute) can be life-threatening, particularly if septicemia occurs. Drinking plenty of water is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of developing a UTI and is also advised for people that have developed an infection. The presence of kidney stones can complicate UTIs as they can compromise how the kidneys work. Complicated UTIs tend to require longer periods of antibi-

otics to treat them, typically lasting between 7 and 14 days. The leading cause of kidney stones is a lack of water, and they are commonly reported in people that have been found not drinking the recommended daily amount of water. As well as complicating UTIs, research has suggested that kidney stones also increase the risk of chronic kidney disease developing. In November 2014, the American College of Physicians issued new guidelines for people who have previously developed kidney stones, stating that increasing fluid intake to enable 2 liters of urination a day could decrease the risk of stone recurrence by at least half with no side effects. Dehydration - using and losing more water than the body takes in - can also lead to an imbalance in the body’s electrolytes. Electrolytes, such as potassium, phosphate and sodium, help carry electrical signals between cells. The levels of electrolytes in the body are kept stable by properly functioning kidneys. When the kidneys are unable to maintain a balance in the levels of electrolytes, these electrical signals become mixed up, which can lead to seizures, involving involuntary muscle movements and loss of consciousness. In severe cases, dehydration can also lead to kidney failure, a potentially life-threatening outcome. Possible complications of chronic kidney failure include anemia, damage to the central nervous system, heart failure and a compromised immune system. There are a considerable number of health problems that can occur simply through not drinking enough water, and yet researchers have found that a significant number of Americans may be failing to obtain the recommended levels of fluid intake every day. 5 fun ways to build your child’s brain

As parents, we face emotionally intense moments with our kids. When your 6-month-old wakes every two hours through the night. When your 5-year-old kicks you in the shin because it’s bedtime. When your teenager disrespects you for setting limits on technology. Enter survival mode. As parents, we’ve all been there. Since every child and developmental stage is different, some techniques that work with one child may not work with another. That’s why parenting from a posture of emotional safety matters more than any one technique. So what’s the key to nurturing our child’s budding brain, especially in these emotionally stressful moments? In short, the answer is you. And not just your physical presence, but your emotional presence. Being emotionally safe means feeding our kids’ brains like we do their tummies. Here are five fun ways to build your child’s brain each day: 1.Take Time Each Day to Be a Kid Again While there are many different ways to play, unstructured relational settings present the greatest potential for brain development. In other words, be a kid again! Take at least 20 minutes each day to peel back all of your adultness, explore with your kids, and celebrate what you discover together. Keep it uninterrupted and let your child lead it. If she wants to color, color with her. If she wants to play dolls, doctor, or go to the moon, go there with her. If your teen wants you to

play video games, do it. Don’t criticize or tell your child how or what to play. Just be present and see the world through her eyes. 2.Tell Family Stories In our home, we have no screens at the table. Mealtime is ripe for brain growth. One way to complement mealtime instead of staring at screens is to tell your kids stories about their family history. Some argue that children who know about their family history have higher self-esteem, a greater sense of control over their life, are more likely to handle and bounce back from stressful events, and are more likely to be emotionally healthy and happy. 3.Give Your Child the Gift of Boredom Research shows people really dislike being alone with nothing but their thoughts. So much so, they would rather administer an electrical shock to themselves instead of being left alone to think for six to 15 minutes. Imagine that, “Mom, I’m bored. Can I go stick my finger in an electrical socket?” “Sure, son. We wouldn’t want you thinking for too long now would we?” Don’t amuse your kids into a creative impotence. Constant amusement actually inhibits their creativity and imagination. In fact, research suggests that 15 minutes of boredom may not only allow for creative thinking, but also leads people to seek meaning and exploration. So allow your kids to be bored. Just keep them away from electrical outlets.

4.Ask Yourself One Question Whenever your kids are emotionally overwhelmed, ask yourself, “How can I respond in an emotionally safe way so my child knows he is loved?” Connecting and talking with our children is critical to brain development. Kissing a booboo or giving him a bear hug after a rough day at school isn’t just an act. Endorphins are released in the brain which help our child feel happy and relaxed while reducing physical and emotional pain. On the contrary, if we’re harsh, inconsistent, or dismissing, we teach him that people will not be there when he needs them most. Perhaps it’s no wonder, then, that many adolescents who lacked a loving caregiver early in life seek out drugs to calm and soothe themselves when they become stressed, because they’ve learned that people aren’t safe, loving, or available. Win your child’s heart at an early age and you can influence behavior for life. 5.Prioritize Eye Contact over iContact I remember one morning when our toddler son was so excited looking out the picture window that he began to dance uncontrollably. I joined him in the dance. Had anybody walked by our house at that moment they would’ve seen a grown man stomping enthusiastically in the window. Creepy, I know. But my little boy and I shared a moment, bonding in the only language he had for the

excitement he was feeling. One of the most powerful ways to build the brain of a child is to uninhibitedly join him on the dance floor. Two minutes later, my boy turned from the window, looked up at me, and babbled with joy. I was now on my phone. The moment was over. E-mails, text messages, and push notifications don’t care about moments, about your relationships, or your kids. They only care that you prioritize them right away. Do your kids know you genuinely enjoy dancing with them more than staring at your phone? Be okay with being the creepy adult who dances in front of the window at seven in the morning. Parenting isn’t rocket science, it’s just brain surgery. Courtesy: Washington Post

WOMEN

Hello 2016

By Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker What have we got to offer each other? What is our past balance sheet saying? Are all our past accounts taken care of? Done with it ? New game with new equipments? By now many of us must have already made some new year’s resolutions and even broken some as well. Let’s have a look at some of them. 1.I will get up early 2.I will study hard 3.I will exercise daily 4.I will keep calm, won’t lose temper 5.I will not lie, cheat etc. 6.I will take out time for family and friends 7.I will.... etc etc. You can add some from your own list too. It is not hard to make a resolution but to make a nice, beautiful, sweet, intelligent resolution is one thing and to stick to it and achieve it another thing. At the 3rd or 4th month of the year, our own glorious resolutions look alien to us. Still, as we are looking forward to keep traditions and customs alive. Let us look at some resolutions, (we wish) for parents from children’s point of view. As a good parent: •I will lovingly wake up my children, with soft hello rather than shouting at them to get uo because its getting too late. •I will not be eating their heads for taking proper breakfast on time, keeping dishes in the sink, not throwing towels and shoes here and there and so on and on. •(p.s. if I can allow big boy called husband to do so then why not children? At least for sometime). •I will not notice or say a word on untidy state of the room, in general or in particular. •I will definitely think for thinking about allowing them for more partying with friends. (Really?) •I will figure out some way for housework rather than asking children all the time for help.

4

•Dressing?? I will first look at fashion trends and other teenagers around and feel better that at least my children are still dressing decently. •I will think positive all the time even if my blood group is not, even if it is rather boiling with their behaviour. Come on guys! Wake up! You would not like to see same resolutions from parent’s point of view. Let’s have some sensible and practical joint resolutions: 1.We as a family will be always standing with each other no matter what. 2.We all will have some routine, some schedule to follow and stick to it., let it be exercise, studying or working. 3.We all will meet at least once every day, have meal together. 4.We all will discuss about each other’s studies, work, ambitions and help and guide each other. 5.We will plan picnics, outings and trips with the family more often. 6.We will be more of a giver than expecting favours. 7.We will keep our family atmosphere loving, nice, sympathetic, open hearted and encouraging. 8.We will all keep some hobbies individually as well as together. 9.If we have some problems, we will discuss and sort them out. 10.We will respect each other and accept each other with all good and not so good points. Let us all smile after all we are entering the year of sweet sixteen 2016. Email:asmashums@gmail.com

Challenges In Life!

By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor If you want success as bad as you want to breath, you will be successful. I’m sure everyone wants to breath so really what are the steps to become a real success story? People are yearning and wanting success. We all want to make more money, or have more than we already have right now. But how bad do we really want it? How do we really become a real success story? The steps to becoming a real success story are not always simple as one may think. If so, everyone would have a success story, everyone would be making more money, or everyone would be starting their own business, etc. But if you want it as bad as you want to breath, success will not only come but will change your life to ways that you never saw before. There are 5 magical steps that will help you to become successful. 1. Find your purpose ~ Find your purpose and true happiness will come. We were all created with a thought in mind and with a true purpose. Finding your purpose will help you live longer and grow stronger. What if we were sitting in a chair expecting it to ride us down the street like a car would. It wouldn’t work would it? That’s because it’s not the purpose of the chair to take us here or there. Find your purpose and the success you yearn for will push you to becoming a real success story. 2. Write the Vision ~ Writing the vision is the 2nd step to becoming a real success story. In a nutshell it just says that your dreams and vision will come to life. Writing the vision is another word

Modi’s Surprise Visit: Safe To Be A Skeptic For Pakistan

By. Wajiha Rasul, M.A. , Toronto Recent Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s, surprise visit to Pakistan shocked many across borders. As usual, both right and left wing opinions were repeatedly broadcasted on media in both states. Jitendra Singh, an Indian Minister of State in the Prime Minister Office (PMO), expressed that Modi’s visit is a positive steps towards India-Pakistan relations. Contrarily, The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia said “If Pakistan stops sending terrorists, then I will believe that the Prime Minister’s efforts and visit were fruitful,” In Pakistan Modi’s visit was welcomed by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) while chief of right wing Jamaat-e-Islami, Sirajul Haq, found it unfortunate that Modi was welcomed in Pakistan. Although any steps taken for peace between India and Pakistan should be welcomed but given the history and nature of relations between both countries any surprise visits or sudden friendly steps cannot be analyzed without some skepticism, especially when it is coming from a known right-wing Hindu nationalist leader like Modi. Since Modi became Prime Minister of India border clashes between India and Pakistan increased. Mr. Narendra Modi assumed office in May 2014 and India-Pakistan border skirmishes started in July 2014 which continued till September 2015. Moreover, let’s not forget Modi’s opinion about Pakistan; in his address at Dhaka University in June 2015 he said, “Pakistan aaye din India, jo naako dum la deta hai, terrorism ko badhawa deta hai... ki ghatnaayein ghatthi rehti hain,” (Every now and then Pakistan keeps disturbing India, creates nuisance, promotes terrorism and such incidents keep recurring). Even before the recent surprise visit to Pakistan Modi blamed Pakistan for sponsored terrorism in India at a gathering in Kabul. Knowing his opinion about Pakistan it would be foolish to think that there was no hidden agenda behind the visit. After all it is politics and every political leader has a strategy. For Modi the contradiction between his opinion and actions clearly points that he is following Kautilya’s strategy. Kautilya served as a chief advisor to the emperor Chandragupta Maurya and his son Bindusara; he also pioneered Political Science and Economics in India. Kautaliya advised in his famous book Arthashastra to use treachery, spies, fake holy men and

women to internally collapse the enemy’s kingdom. He also advocated for making false alliance to advance one’s interest and when those interest are met he advised to betray the ally. For Kautaliya there was no such things as ethics and moral in politics. India is known for following Kautilya’s strategy for years and Mr. Modi’s recent surprise visit was no exception. It was the perfect time to show the world that Modi took the first step towards friendship between India and Pakistan because he cares for peace in South Asia. It is important to note that PM Modi was not the one to take this so-called peaceful step. He was invited by Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif to visit Pakistan. However, the event was covered internationally in a biased manner. Most headlines stated that Indian PM is on a surprise visit to Pakistan. Very few media outlets highlighted the fact that Pakistani PM invited an Indian PM to visit. It is also important to note that Modi’s acceptance was just an extension of Kautilya’s strategy which India is practicing for decades. As noted above that he has strong anti-Pakistan sentiments which he has been narrating in his speeches then how all of the sudden those anti-Pakistan sentiments were put aside? Obviously because of deception and the strategy of false alliance. Although Pakistani government is on the right track to welcome Modi for the visit they should be very careful in negotiating on key issues with Indian government. Modi’s surprise visit was a success in creating the deception of friendship between India and Pakistan. Now the burden rests on Pakistani authorities that how they play their diplomatic skills to use this deception in securing their national interest while keeping peace. For now only time will tell if Pak-India is just going through a repetitive cycle of Conflict-Peace-Conflict or not. Given the history of Pak-India relations and the nature of right-wing government in India it will be safe for Pakistan to be skeptic.

I want to give back with my heart and soul – Mohaammad Amir

Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan fast bowler, who is returning to international cricket after a five-year ban for spot fixing, has said he is aware the process of regaining the cricket community’s trust would be slow, and that he hoped to win it with his performance. Amir, 23, was selected in Pakistan’s ODI and T20I squads for the tour of New Zealand in January, subject to his visa being granted given that he had pleaded guilty to a criminal charge in the United Kingdom. “I am a different person this time,” Amir told ESPNcricinfo. “My vision about life has changed and now I am more positive. I have experienced a lot at such a minor age. I don’t know about the future and nobody knows what will happen next. As a professional sportsman I can only give my best shot to win the trust back. “I know it is a slow process and I will definitely win it with my performance. I am determined to do this for the fans who stood by me … now it’s all about their pride and I will be the guardian of their trust.” When

asked why people should trust him again, Amir said: “This is tricky. If anyone says you are bad this mean he wants you to be good, and I am here to be good and I want to be good. If they say I have done bad then they should also give me a chance to change myself for good. I need their support and I will prove to them that I am a changed person. “I know people madly in love with cricket, they got hurt, and they now should trust me only because I want to give back their love for cricket, by performing. I want them to trust me because they lost something because of me and I want to give back with my whole heart and soul.” Amir’s inclusion in the Pakistan squad was not received well by senior batsman Mohammad Hafeez and ODI captain Azhar Ali. They did not attend a few days of the training camp in Lahore under protest, and Azhar offered to resign as captain, but the PCB mediated and smoothened out the issues. Amir said he was not hurt by Hafeez and Azhar’s stance. “Everyone has an

opinion and I respect that,” he said. “It’s their right to express whatever they felt and I am not hurt at all. You can’t push and force people to do what they don’t want to do. Whatever they said it was their opinion and I believe if there are issues it should be addressed, discussed. Credit should be given to the board as it intervened and united us all together. “In the camp I met all, and I am happy they all heard me. I am lucky they understood me and now the atmosphere is good around me. I think it’s more of communication gap as five years are a lot. I think when you mix with them and talk to them they automatically start realising and see that I am a changed person so I think with time things will be good.” Amir had made his international debut in 2009 and played 14 Tests before he was exposed for bowling deliberate no-balls during the Lord’s Test in 2010. He understood that it would be hard to win trust in England, where his trial played

He’s a big boy, with a big future and a big grin and, evidently, a big suit of fire-repellant armour. Does Jake Virtanen feel the searing heat of a nation’s disappointment — which, as these things often go, was largely directed at the most convenient target — over the Canadian junior team’s sixth-place finish at the IIHF world under-20 championships? Sure he does. He’d love to undo those penalties against the Finns. Does the Vancouver tabloid that published the size-XL “Goat-medal winner” headline under Virtanen’s photo on its back-page sports cover Sunday wish it could have a do-over,

considering the 19-year-old power forward is not only one of the Vancouver Canucks’ top prospects, but a kid from nearby Abbotsford? You betcha. But if Virtanen is struggling with the blindside hit from his hometown bugle, he gave no hint of it Wednesday, when he waded into the kind of scrum usually reserved for visiting superstars, and calmly handled 15 minutes of questions, until the last one had been asked and answered. “It’s not going to bother me,” he said. “It’s something obviously I’d love to take back, that second penalty where I slashed the guy’s stick, (but) it was just emotion out there.

“The stuff that happened, us losing, you’ve just got to live with it, and move past it. We had a really good skill team. I think sometimes we kind of let each other down a little bit with undisciplined penalties, but it’s part of the game, and it’s not going to go our way every time.” The Canadian team had banned Twitter during the tournament, but he was back on the social network on his return trip. “I was like, wow, I guess people are being really hard on Team Canada,” he said. “but I mean, Canadian fans are so passionate about the game, Canada wants to win all the time, and obviously when we don’t get what we

out, but hoped the country would accept him again through his performance. “I think time will tell. But I know when they see me playing they will see good things and I hope they will accept me. Playing cricket in England is what I am looking forward to and I would love to bowl at Lord’s again. Fans - no matter where they are in Pakistan or England or wherever - were hurt, I know that and the most important goal is to win them all.”

want, people kind of take it out on people … and I guess I was the guy. “I think this is definitely the most criticized I’ve been (but) I’m not the kind of guy who’s like, ‘This is a joke, people saying this.’ I was more disappointed in losing the game. We went over there to win a gold medal and we didn’t get it. Obviously I want to take a little bit of the responsibility for that.”..... continued..... vancouversun.com/sports/story.
