Canadian dollar to resume losing streak in months ahead: Reuters poll The battered Canadian dollar is expected to weaken even more, tied to the ill fortunes of depressed oil prices and the prospect of another interest rate cut, a Reuters poll showed. After plunging to its weakest in 13 years in mid-January, toC$1.4689 on Jan. 20, the Canadian dollar, known as the loonie, rebounded more than 5 percent as the central bank kept interest rates on hold and the price of oil, a major Canadian export, rebounded. But there is little hope that a massive oil supply glut in world markets will be soaked up considering clear evidence of waning demand, particularly from China. That suggests there is more downward pressure on the loonie to come. “Everything is taking cues from crude prices, and nothing more strongly so than the Canadian dollar,” said Adam Cole, head of G10 currency strategy at RBC Capital Markets. The poll of 45 foreign exchange strategists forecast the currency to weaken Continued on Pg 4

It is amazing that the Scientists are discovering through the modern technology and marvelous equipment, what the scriptures foresaw or predicted centuries ago. The climate change and planetary emergency also warned in 2006 by an American environmentalist former Vice President Al Gore.
There is no doubt the earth is getting warmer and will continue to rise in temperature until the Day of Judgement, which is leading to Draught, global food crisis and diseases. “It will get so hot as if the Sun is right on the top of your Head”: this divine prophecy of global warming
ture and is one manifestation of climate change. The rate of global warming over the last half of the 20th century was about twice that for the whole century. This human influence results primarily from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Burning these fuels generates carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Land use changes, such as deforestation and conversion of land to agriculture, have also contributed carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Global warming is primarily attributed to the enhancement of the natural greenhouse gas effect.
Greenhouse gases are so-named because they reduce heat loss from Earth to outer space. In this respect they act in a way that is similar to a greenhouse, creating warmer conditions than there would otherwise be, were these gases not present. Atmospheric concentrations of key greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone have risen substantially as a result of human activity. This has enhanced or intensified the natural greenhouse effect. Climate change is a warming trend, not just a warming cycle. Global temperature naturally varies up

Working together to fight Climate Change Facts on Climate Change Climate change refers to a longterm shift in weather conditions. It is measured by changes in a variety of climate indicators (e.g. temperature, precipitation, wind) including both changes in average and extreme conditions. Climate change can be the result of natural processes and/or human activity. Over most of Earth’s history, natural processes have been responsible for periods of climate change. The Earth’s climate has changed throughout its history long before human activity could have played a role. For example, the planet has swung between cold glacial periods or “ice ages”, and warm interglacial periods over the last few million years. Changes in the past can be explained by natural factors such as changes in the Earth’s orbit, in the sun’s intensity, in the amount of explosive volcanic activity, by changes to the surface of the Earth, and farther back in time, to the position of the continents. Of these, only changes in the sun’s intensity and volcanic activity are relevant on century timescales. Human activity has now become the main cause of recent climate change. The strong global warming observed since the mid-20th century has been largely attributed to human influences on the climate. Global warming refers to the observed long-term rise in global average surface tempera-

‘Global Warming & Divine Prophecy linked’! and down from year to year and decade to decade. Natural climate variability will continue to have an influence on the state of the climate over short time periods, but superimposed on these natural fluctuations is a long term trend towards global warming. In order to detect climate change – a long term trend – above the ‘noise’ of natural climate variability, it is important to look to long term data records. A long term global warming of about 0.85 °C has been observed over the period 1880 to 2012. Climate change will affect communities all over the world. Climate change is projected to lead to both changes in average conditions and in extreme weather events. Increases in droughts, heavy rains, floods, and severe storms, where these occur, can be very disruptive for society and are among the potential impacts of most concern. As well, rising sea levels will affect coastal areas, along which, in many regions, human communities are concentrated. Changes in temperature and precipitation will affect natural habitats and managed ones, with impacts on agriculture and food supplies of particular concern to a growing human population. There will be opportunities as well as risks associated with climate change, but in balance, impacts are expected to become increasingly negative as global average surface temperature becomes increasingly warmer. climatechange.gc.ca

Nawaz inaugurates Gwadar-Hoshab (M-8) portion of CPEC
QUETTA: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday inaugurated the Gwadar-Hoshab (M-8) road and reviewed the work being carried out on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). During the inspection of the newly constructed M-8 route, General Raheel Sharif personally drove the prime minister in an open-top vehicle. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Asim Bajwa added that the locals were overjoyed with the progress of the CPEC project. The inauguration ceremony of M8 was attended by Chief
Minister Balochistan Nawab Sanaullah Zehri, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Commander Southern Command Lieutenant General Amir Riaz and other high ranking military and civilian officials. “The land-locked Central Asian states are interested in trade via the Gwadar port,” said the prime minister while addressing the attendees. He stated on the occasion that CPEC would open new vistas of development and prosperity in the region in general and benefit the country in particular. The prime minister also praised the services and sacrifices rendered by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) during the construction of the ongoing project. “Despite security problems, work is in full-swing on construction of roads in Balochistan,” added Nawaz. The premier elaborated that after completion of CPEC and other related projects, Balochistan would not be dependent for financial aid on the federal government. “CPEC would ensure economic development of Balochistan”, he said, adding that the people of the province would be major beneficiaries of the mega project. “Projects cannot be completed through mere slogans, rather a strategy is needed for completion of projects”, he said. The prime minister also reiterated his commitment on the occasion and said efforts were being made to develop Balochistan and bring it at par with other parts of the country. Source: Dawn News
Two dead as PIA employees, LEAs clash at Karachi’s Jinnah Terminal
KARACHI: In a bid to disperse protesting Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees at Jinnah Terminal, security personnel resorted to baton-charging and using rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas shells on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called for implementation of the Essential Services Act. Two protesters died after sustaining bullet wounds. Rangers and police deny “handling protesters violently” and firing at the site of the clash. Pakistan Airlines Cabin Crew Association President and JAC spokesman Nasrullah Khan earlier told Dawn.com that the strike would proceed as the government had not accepted the body’s four-point agenda. Explore: PIA standoff: Govt ups the ante by banning union activity A heavy contingent of Rangers and police personnel were deployed at the site to prevent protesters from entering the cargo gate and moving onto Jinnah Avenue, DawnNews reported. Television footage showed security personnel fire tear gas shells and water cannons at protesters as they attempted to force their way into the cargo gate. An injured protester Inayat Raza, who sustained a bullet wound in his chest during the protest, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital. Raza was a member of PIA’s engineering department. Another injured person, Saleem, who also sustained bullet wounds died at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Complex (JPMC), spokesman Dr Seemi Jamali confirmed. She said at least ten injured people were admitted to JPMC, two of whom were critical. Deputy Inspector General East Kamran Fazal said bullet casings were collected to ascertain who opened fire on the protesters. He claimed the bullets were not fired by policemen. “We instructed our personnel not to handle the protesters violently. We are trying to find out who initiated the clash,” he said.“No Rangers personnel has fired to control the protest at Jinnah Terminal today,” Rangers Public Relations Officer said in an official statement. ISIL suicide bomber kills Iraqi troops near Ramadi
Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group have killed 18 Iraqi soldiers in a suicide car attack north of Ramadi, continuing their counterattack after being driven from the city by Iraqi troops last month. Military sources told Al Jazeera that Tuesday morning’s attack took place in the town of Al-Bu Dhiaab, just a few miles north of Anbar province’s capital. Three ISIL suicide bombers attempted to attack members of the 39th brigade of the 10th army division, but two of their vehicles were demolished by anti-tank missiles, the military sources said. The third bomber, however, managed to make his way to the gate of the army’s headquarters and detonate the explosives, killing at least 18 soldiers. Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said: “This is a major blow for the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF). The north of Ramadi was supposed to be secure.” He said that it was too early to say that ISIL’s recent attacks against Iraqi forces around Ramadi could be labelled a “resurgence”.”What we do know is that ISIL is able to mount attacks because they are a lot more nimble,” our correspondent said. The Iraqi army declared Ramadi liberated in early January after a major offensive reclaimed government offices in the city centre. But since then, Iraqi forces have faced continued attacks from ISIL and fierce resistance in areas it holds in Ramadi’s suburbs - with dozens of Iraqi soldiers killed in attacks last week. Elsewhere, in Ramadi’s eastern Shujirayah neighbourhood, Iraqi forces were attempting to clear about 300 ISIL fighters believed to be holed
up there. “This is the fourth time Iraqi forces have mounted an offensive to take these eastern neighbourhoods, the last remaining pocket of ISIL fighters,” Al Jazeera’s Khan said. He said booby traps set by ISIL have so far slowed the advance. Tens of thousands of trapped Iraqi civilians are running out of food and medicine in the western city of Falluja, an ISIL stronghold under siege by security forces, according to local officials and residents. The Iraqi army, police and Iranian-backed Shia militias - backed by air strikes from a US-led coalition - imposed a near total siege late last year on Falluja, located 50 km west of Baghdad in the Euphrates river valley. The city’s population is suffering from a shortage of food, medicine and fuel, residents and officials told the Reuters news agency by phone, and media reports said several people had died due to starvation and poor medical care. Insecurity and poor communications inside the city make those reports difficult to verify. Sohaib al-Rawi, the governor of Anbar province where Falluja is located, appealed to the coalition to air-drop humanitarian supplies to the trapped civilians. He said this was the only way to deliver aid after ISIL mined the entrances to the city and stopped people leaving. “No force can enter and secure (the delivery) ... There is no option but for airplanes to transport aid,” he said in an interview with al-Hadath TV late on Monday, adding the situation was deteriorating by the day. Source: Al-Jazeera
A Syrian military offensive backed by heavy Russian air strikes threatened to cut critical rebel supply lines into the northern city of Aleppo, as peace talks in Switzerland appeared to be in jeopardy on Wednesday. The government attack north of Aleppo that began in recent days is its first major offensive there since Russian air strikes began on September 30. Rebels described the assault as the most intense yet, with activists reporting that 45 civilians have been killed. One commander said that opposition-held areas of Syria’s largest city were at risk of being encircled entirely by the government and allied militia, appealing to foreign states that back the rebels to send more weapons Chances of achieving a ceasefire at talks in Geneva appears to be receding as the government, supported by Russian air power, advances against rebels, some of them USbacked. The refugee crisis and spread of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group through large areas of Syria, and from there to Iraq, had injected a new urgency to resolve the five-year-old Syria war. On Tuesday, John Kerry, the US secretary of state, called on Moscow to stop the bombing during the peace process. “We are beginning the talks, we are at the table and we expect a ceasefire,” he said after a meeting in Rome of countries opposed to ISIL. But Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said at a news conference from Oman on Wednesday that Russia would not stop its air strikes on Syria “until we defeat terrorist organisation like al-Nusra [Front]”. The area around Aleppo safeguards a rebel supply route from Turkey into opposition-held parts of the city
and stands between government-held parts of western Aleppo and the Shia villages of Nubul and al-Zahraa, which are loyal to Damascus. “The supply routes were not cut but there is heavy bombardment of them by the jets,” said a commander in the Levant Front rebel group who gave his name as Abu Yasine. “The Russian jets are trying to hit headquarters and cut supply routes.” The Russian jets had been working “night and day” for three days, he added, and reiterated the rebels’ long-held demand for anti-aircraft missiles to confront the assault. “If there is no support, the regime could besiege the city of Aleppo and cut the road to the north,” said Abu Yasine, whose group is one of the rebel movements that have received military support from states opposed to President Bashar al-Assad, funnelled via Turkey. Advancing government forces seized the village of Hardatnin some 10km northwest of Aleppo, building on gains of the previous day, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring body. Another rebel commander said that he had sent reinforcements to the area. “We sent new fighters this morning, we sent heavier equipment there. It seems it will be a decisive battle in the north, God willing,” said Ahmed al-Seoud, head of a Free Syrian Army group known as Division 13. The Russian intervention has reversed the course of the war for Damascus, which suffered a series of major defeats to rebels in western Syria last year before Moscow deployed its air force as part of an alliance with Iran. Syrian army encircles Aleppo as ceasefire talks fade
Clinton wins Iowa, campaigns shift to New Hampshire
Hillary Clinton tried to turn a narrow victory in Iowa into a bit of momentum for her battered Democratic campaign, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz sought to lock in his spot at the top of the Republican field as the presidential candidates packed up Tuesday and sped to New Hampshire. The contenders arrived in the northeastern state and quickly scattered for a blitz of campaign rallies and television interviews. Some sought to capitalize on the results of the leadoff Iowa caucuses, while others looked to put the best face on poor showings as they settled in for the Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary -- the second in the state-by-state nominating contests to decide who will be each party’s candidate for president in November. Clinton celebrated her narrow win in Iowa and said she expected a tough fight in New Hampshire, noting she’ll be campaigning in the “backyard” of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, where he has been running strong for weeks. Sanders celebrated his stronger-than-expected showing in Iowa, landing at dawn in Bow and addressing a hardy group of supporters who met him. He said the results proved he was a viable candidate. “We’re in this for the long haul,” he told reporters as his plane flew through the night to New Hampshire. Indeed, the once-unthinkably-small margin the former first lady, senator and secretary of state held over the self-declared democratic socialist suggested the Democratic contest is headed toward a protracted fight between the party’s pragmatic and progressive wings. Clinton defeated Sanders by less than three-tenths of 1 per cent, the closest in Iowa Democratic caucus history, the state party said. Sanders said his campaign was still reviewing the results and did not concede. On the Republican side, businessman Donald Trump is looking to rebound after a second-place finish in Iowa that marked a humbling blow to the boastful real estate mogul. Still, he has been leading the polls in New Hampshire. Cruz’s win provided a twist worthy of the topsy-turvy race. The Texas senator proved to be beloved by evangelicals, even if maligned by many others in his party, and adept at mounting a powerful grass-roots operation. Coming in a close third, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was catapulted to the top of the heap of establishment candidates vying to be the party’s preferred alternative to Trump or Cruz. For Republicans, the pivot to New Hampshire meant the still-crowded cast of candidates has turned
toward a less religious and mostly undecided electorate. New Hampshire has historically favoured more moderate candidates than Iowa, and more than 40 per cent of the state’s voters are not registered in any political party, giving them the power to choose which party’s’ primary to vote in. Polls show well over half of Republican voters have yet to make up their minds. That may be good news for Cruz, who is hoping to avoid the conservatives’ Iowa curse. Unlike past candidates who found love in Iowa but fizzled fast, Cruz argued Tuesday that his campaign has staying power, resources and broad appeal. Both Cruz and Rubio also had an eye on South Carolina which is the first state in the South to hold a primary. Rubio’s campaign announced the endorsement of South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, the only AfricanAmerican Republican in the Senate. And then there is Trump, who may be the candidate most in need of a comeback after Iowa. Despite stealing the spotlight and driving the debate for months, he appears to have been out-organized by Cruz in Iowa. On Tuesday, Trump blamed the media for dismissing his “longshot, great finish.” “Because I was told I could not do well in Iowa, I spent very little there -- a fraction of Cruz & Rubio. Came in a strong second. Great honour,” Trump tweeted. Rubio’s advisers cast the Republican race as a three-man contest -- an attempt to box out the other contenders vying for support among mainstream Republicans. That won’t be easy. Ohio Gov. John Kasich, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday stormed into New Hampshire with packed campaign schedules. All three are hoping the state will breathe life into their flagging campaigns. Source: CTV News
Candian Dollar..... Cont from Page 1 to C$1.42 in a month from Tuesday’s close of C$1.4051, a downgrade from C$1.39 expected in January’s poll. From there, the loonie will likely recover modestly to C$1.40 in six months and C$1.37 in a year versus C$1.37 and C$1.34 predicted in the previous survey. That is about 30 percent below C$1.067, where it was trading when oil prices plummeted. Crude oil is down more than 70 percent since mid-2014. The poll’s 12-month forecasts were in a particularly wide range, from a 7 percent drop to a gain of 11 percent. Saxo Bank, the most bearish on the Canadian dollar in the poll, expects C$1.55 in six months and C$1.50 in a year. The other unknown is what the Bank of Canada will do with rates. It cut them twice last year in an attempt to offset the oil price shock that eventually pushed the economy into recession. And while many in financial markets expected it to cut again, it left rates unchanged at 0.50 percent at its latest policy meeting on Jan. 20. But with barely any economic growth, some economists expect the central bank to reduce rates further, perhaps as early as March. That would keep the Bank of Canada on a very different path from the U.S. Federal Reserve, which raised rates for the first time in nearly a decade in December. The deeper the drop in crude prices, the more likely it will be that U.S. and Canadian monetary policy diverges further, said RBC’s Cole. Bearish bets on the Canadian dollar rose to their highest in five months last week, according Commodity Futures Trading Commission data. However, Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz has continued to pin hopes on an export-led recovery in Canada driven by a weaker Canadian dollar and stronger U.S. demand. But that hasn’t happened yet. “So far the story has been one of disappointments,” said Cole. U.S. economic growth braked sharply in the fourth quarter, casting doubts not only on its ability to lift Canadian export growth, but also on whether the Fed will soon follow up on its December hike with another. Hendrix Vachon, currency strategist at Desjardins Group, said it will be “trouble for the Canadian economy” if a boost to export growth doesn’t materialize, especially when the economy is reeling under the double-barrelled blow of weak domestic demand and collapsing investment in oil production. But Vachon, who forecasts the dollar at C$1.37 in a year, expects a U.S.-led recovery in exports in the coming months and oil prices to pick up by the end of the year. Source: Reuters

B.C.’s earthquake preparedness Terminally-ill Canadians wait slowly progressing: expert too long for disability pensions: AG
Perceived public apathy towards the threat of a major earthquake off Canada’s west coast hasn’t stopped governments across southwestern British Columbia from quietly earmarking millions of dollars for seismic upgrades and construction in anticipation of the “Big One.” Much of the work is being done incrementally -- retrofits dovetailing with routine maintenance, schools being renovated one by one and new construction projects being subject to updated quake-resistant requirements. Engineer and seismic specialist John Sherstobitoff praised the province on its disaster preparedness, saying the government has learned from the responses of other jurisdictions to earthquakes. “We’re doing pretty well,” said Sherstobitoff, who works for global engineering firm Ausenco. “We’re doing reasonably well for a province that hasn’t had a major, damaging earthquake in this generation.” Scientists have determined the likelihood of another serious quake happening in the next 50 years is one in 10. Pressure between the two undersea plates of the Cascadia subduction zone, located off Vancouver Island, has been building since the slabs last slipped in a major way in 1700. The ensuing megathrust quake decimated the Pacific Northwest coastline and sent a four-storey tsunami on a nine-hour journey across the ocean before it plowed into Japan. The occurrence of such a calamitous event nowadays has the potential to destroy not only human life but also the province’s pocket book, says the Insurance Bureau of Canada. It released a report in 2013 that estimated the economic impact of a 9.0-magnitude earthquake hitting B.C. would be a staggering $75 billion. In the meantime, governments continue to prepare. The City of Vancouver replaces about 0.5 per cent -- or six kilometres -of its water mains a year, switching out brittle cast-iron material with a more resilient ductile iron. Vancouver is also in the process of assessing its 560 municipal buildings for seismic upgrades. It has whittled down the list to 56 and a city spokesman said the final cut is expected sometime next year. Portions of city hall are undergoing earthquake upgrades. Across B.C., $2.2 billion in provincial funding has been spent or committed to upgrade or replace 214 of the 342 schools deemed at risk in an earthquake. Across
the Burrard Inlet from Vancouver, a 2015 study focusing on North Vancouver estimated that about 3.6 per cent -- or 840 -of the district’s 23,700 buildings would be severely damaged or destroyed in the event of a 7.3-magnitude quake in the Georgia Strait. The cumulative economic loss from building damage and service disruption was estimated at just under $3 billion. Metro Vancouver has seismically upgraded its water reservoirs and is looking at a program to bring its sewage system up to date. A spokeswoman from Victoria said the city has managed to protect the historic portion of city hall and its next priority is the fire department headquarters. Beyond seismic upgrades, some experts argue the province needs to go further with its mitigation efforts. Ocean Networks Canada spokesman Teron Moore said British Columbia is missing the same kind of offshore earlywarning system already in place in Japan and along sections of the U.S. coastline. Moore attributed the absence of an early-warning system in B.C. to public apathy. “We tend to put our heads in the sand a little bit,” he said about British Columbians, whereas places like Japan with more frequent and severe seismic activity tend to be better prepared. So far, B.C. has about 100 land and undersea earthquake sensors, a far cry from Japan’s approximately 1,000 detection instruments. Japan’s technology is also integrated directly into its infrastructure, said Moore, so when an earthquake is detected not only are emergency personnel notified but trains automatically slow down, gas valves shut off and elevator doors open, for example. Moore said improving Canada’s capacity to detect quakes earlier will require more funding and better collaboration between the various organizations that operate sensors along the coast, such as Natural Resources Canada, the University of British Columbia and the provincial Transport Ministry. An effective earlywarning system could buy valuable seconds or even minutes to prepare before disaster struck, he added. “Earthquake early warning isn’t the solve-all solution for preparedness in British Columbia,” Moore added. “It doesn’t stop the shaking from happening. Dozens killed in Yemen as army moves towards Sanaa Battles intensified on Wednesday northeast of Yemen’s capital as forces loyal to the president backed by Saudi-led coalition air strikes killed more than 40 Houthi fighters.Days of clashes continued as the Houthi rebels and their allies who control Sanaa were on the defensive about 60km from the capital in the Fardhat Nehim area, pro-government sources told Al Jazeera.Fardhat Nehim is a strategic region leading to the Sanaa, and government forces continue to capture villages after making territorial gains since last week. Dozens of rebels and six government forces were killed in fighting overnight on Wednesday. Yemen’s army also captured 30 Houthis in Fardhat Nehim, where the rebels have a base, and troops were surrounding the fighters’ camp. Five civilians were also killed when artillery shells hit residential areas, the Associated Press news agency quoted tribal elders as saying. Yemen has been
Peter McClure was denied pension disability benefits on a non-medical technicality. The 63-year-old Alberta man has terminal lung cancer -- he says he’s lucky to still be alive -- and waited about two years for a decision on his appeal of the government’s denial of his Canada Pension Plan disability benefits. The appeals tribunal accidentally missed his request for a speedier hearing, a situation that prolonged McClure’s time in the system, which auditor general Michael Ferguson said on Tuesday was “longer than necessary for a decision.” McClure is one of thousands of people with terminal illnesses or grave conditions who applied for CPP disability payments in recent years and found themselves waiting too long for benefits, or being snowed under by paperwork, or caught in a system where applicants could be twice denied benefits, only to find out later the denials were wrong. While the audit found no documented cases of patients dying while awaiting benefits, it did find that time limits were often missed. Only seven per cent of dying people who sought disability payments got a decision on their application within the government’s 48-hour guideline, while just over half of those with chronic conditions had their cases decided within the established 30-day window. And the appeals body established to streamline the process was set up without a proper transition plan and enough resources, leaving it unable to deal with the volume of cases it inherited from the four bodies that had handled benefits appeals. As a result, the tribunal didn’t meet expectations, allowing the 6,500 cases it inherited to swell to a backlog of 10,871 cases by December 2014. The tribunal has said it expects to be through the backlog by the end of March. The auditor also questioned how decisions were made and how average wait times for a decision rocketed up to 884 days. “It gives validation to, I would say, hundreds if not thousands of Canadians who quietly have struggled and continue to struggle with this very complex system,” said Michael Prince, a public policy professor at the University of Victoria who has been a critic of how the previous government set up the tribunal. Many of the findings in Ferguson’s report come as little news to those in the system who have had their concerns documented extensively by The Canadian Press, including McClure. The theme across every chapter of Ferguson’s report to Parliament was that departments do some activities very well, but they just
don’t seem to see the big picture and don’t try to learn how to make the whole system better, with the $4 billion disability benefits system a prime example. “These are people who have worked in the Canadian workforce and they’ve made their contributions to the CPP and this is one of the benefits that they expect to be there when they need it,” Ferguson told reporters at a news conference. “The department needs to treat this as a service for people and make that whole system better.” For McClure, his experience eroded his faith in the system. “It was a system designed to prevent people from collecting CPP disability. That was the result,” McClure said from his home in Spruce Grove, Alta.Ferguson’s auditors found the problems with the benefits system started with a 42page application that can take months to fill out, a burden that could be handled online, as is already the case with employment insurance. Auditors found the department had little in the way of a quality assurance system to ensure decisions were consistent. The audit found that one-third of applicants originally denied benefits were later found to be eligible based on the original evidence. Two-thirds of those who went to the tribunal ended up winning their appeals, the audit said, raising questions about why any were denied benefits in the first place. “The inconsistencies in the decisions -- I see that all the time in my job,” said Allison Schmidt, a Regina-based, pension-disability case manager who’s been a vocal critic of the tribunal. The government has accepted all of Ferguson’s recommendations to fix the disability benefits system, with measures already in place to speed up processing of applications on the most urgent of files, Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said. F A I T H Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr:
The Prophet said, “A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden.” 9/49 hadith in ‘Belief’ of Sahih Bukhari.
False deities of modernity By:Imam Kamil Mufti God is in no need of our worship, it is mankind that needs to worship God. If no-one were to worship God, it would not take away from His glory in any way, and if all of mankind were to worship Him, it would not add to His glory. It is we, who are in need of God: “I need no provision from them, neither do I need that they should feed Me for, surely, God Himself is the Provider of all sustenance, the Possessor of mighty power.” (Qur’an, 51:57-58) “…But God is Rich, and it is you that are poor...” (Qur’an, 47:38)
Why worship God? God is worshipped by obeying the laws He revealed through the prophets. For example, in the Bible, Prophet Jesus made obedience to the divine laws the key to paradise: “If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” (Matthew, 19:17). Also Prophet Jesus is reported in the Bible to have insisted on strict obedience to the commandments, saying: “Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew, 5:19) Why do human beings need to worship God by obeying the divinely revealed laws? The answer is simple. Obedience to divine law brings peace to this life and salvation in the next. Divine laws provide human beings a
clear code to guide every sphere of human life and interaction. Since the Creator alone knows best what is best for His creation, His laws protect the human soul, body, and society from harm. In order for human beings to fulfill their purpose of creation, they must worship God by obeying His commandments.
The false gods of modernity God is one Who gives meaning and orientation to life. On the other hand, modern life lacks a single center, a single orientation, a single goal, a single purpose. It has no common principle or guideline. Since Islam considers a god to be an entity that is served out of love, deep respect, and anticipation of reward, one can say that the modern world serves many gods. The gods of modernity give meaning and context to the life of modern man. We live in a house of language, and our

words and expressions are the windows through which we look out at the world. Evolution, nationalism, feminism, socialism, Marxism, and, depending on how they are employed, democracy, freedom, and equality can be listed among the indefinable ideologies of modern times. “Plastic words,” to borrow the words of Uwe Poerksen, a German linguist, have been used to usurp God’s power and authority to shape and define the goal of society, or even of humanity itself. These words have connotations with a ‘feel good’ aura. Indefinable words become a limitless ideal. By making the ideal limitless, unlimited needs are awakened, and once these needs are awakened, they appear to be ‘self-evident.’ As it is easy to fall into the habit of worshipping false gods, people then have no protection against the multiplicity of gods that modern ways of thinking demand that they serve. The “plastic words” give great power to those ‘prophets’ who speak on their behalf, because they speak in the name of ‘self-evident’ truths, so other people keep silent. We must follow their authority; the axiomatic pundits who lay down the Law for our health, welfare, well-being, and education. The window of modernity through which we perceive reality today is marked by cracks, smudges, blind spots, and filters. It covers the reality. And the reality is that people have no
real need except toward God. But nowadays, these empty ‘idols’ have become the objects of people’s devotion and worship, as the Qur’an states: “Have you not seen the one who takes his desires as his god?...” (Qur’an, 45:23) Each of these “plastic words” makes other words appear primitive and out-of-date. ‘Believers’ in idols of modernity are proud of worshipping these gods; friends and colleagues consider them enlightened for doing so. Those who still insist on holding onto the “old” God can cover up the embarrassment of doing so by worshipping the new ‘modern’ gods along with Him. Obviously, many people who claim to worship the “old-fashioned” God will twist His teachings in this event, so that He also seems to be telling us to serve these “plastic words.” The worship of false gods entails the corruption not only of individuals and society, but also of the natural world. When people refuse to serve and worship God as He has asked them to serve Him, they cannot fulfill the functions for which He has created them. The result is that our world becomes ever more chaotic, just as the Qur’an tells us: “Corruption has appeared in the land and the sea because of what the hands of people have earned.” (Qur’an, 30:41) Islam’s answer to the meaning and purpose of life fulfills the fundamental human need: A return to God. However, everyone is going back to God willynilly, so the question is not merely going back, but how one goes back. Will it be in shameful agonizing chains awaiting punishment, or joyful and grateful humility for that which God has promised? If you await the latter, then through the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him), God guides people back to Him in a manner that will ensure their eternal happiness. Let the UN take the lead on Afghanistan and Syria By:Massoumeh Torfeh Tajikistan, Central Asia’s poorest state and Afghanistan’s northern neighbour, is under dangerous pressure both internally and externally, according to an early warning report by International Crisis Group. The peace and security that has lasted for almost 20 years in Tajikistan is now facing serious threats. Nevertheless, it could be argued that the fact that peace has lasted for two decades is in itself significant. It is indicative of the relative success of the architecture of the Tajik peace accord of June 1997, which may have lessons for the diplomatic ef-
forts under way for peace in both Afghanistan and Syria. Clearly the scale and details of these wars vary considerably but the essential elements that make up a successful peace process are relevant. Syria’s War: Indirect talks begin in Geneva First, unlike the present examples of Afghanistan and Syria, the Tajik peace process was from the outset designed and implemented by the United Nations in cooperation with key regional powers. Desire for peace Secondly, for about one year before signing, the process benefited from
a strong shared desire for peace by the warring sides. This key element made compromise possible. The peace accord was the culmination of a hard-fought, three-yearlong negotiation process; a process characterised by extended periods of deadlock, often interrupted by spasms of violence between the warring parties. More Canadian cities taking in Syrian refugees to ease housing backlog By:michelle Zilio Ottawa — The Globe and Mail
More Canadian cities and towns will start resettling Syrian refugees to alleviate the burden on municipalities that are saying they cannot currently house any more, Immigration Minister John McCallum announced Wednesday. Mr. McCallum did not specify which ones are being considered to take in more Syrian refugees, but said at least one or two of them will start seeing new arrivals “within a week or so.” He said more details will be announced “soon.” “That [housing for refugees] has, from the beginning, always been a challenge,” Mr. McCallum said. “But the good news is that if there are some cities asking for pauses, there are other parts of the country eager to receive refugees.” Conservative immigration critic Michelle
Rempel told The Globe and Mail that she knows of at least one city willing to help. “My understanding is that there’s a lot of smaller urban centres, such as Medicine Hat, that are looking to help but are sort of feeling that frustration of not being able to tie into this lack of a [government] plan,” Ms. Rempel said. The increase in the number of cities and towns taking in Syrians comes after resettlement officials in some of Canada’s largest cities recently asked the federal government to delay the arrival of more governmentsponsored refugees, due to a housing backlog. Mr. McCallum acknowledged the housing problem as “significant” but “manageable.” Dozens of municipalities across the country, from St. John’s to those in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, are already settling Syrian refugees. Last month, The Globe reported that Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver had asked the federal government to stop sending more Syrian refugees their way for a few days as they housed the large number of people who have already arrived. In a statement Wednesday, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson’s office said the federal government did not grant the Catholic Centre for Immigrants, the agency that has been
helping resettle Syrian refugees in the city, its request for a pause. Rather, the government agreed to slow the number of refugees arriving a day. Some of the government-sponsored refugees are living in hotels as they search for permanent housing. Immigration official David Manicom told reporters on Wednesday that Syrian refugees are not staying in hotels for more than a couple of weeks. NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan said the government should have relied on more cities and towns to help with refugee resettlement from the start, in order to avoid the housing backlog. She called on the government to outline a longer-term resettlement plan, especially on the housing front. Although 2,700 spaces are available on military bases in Kingston, Ont., and Valcartier, Que., Mr. McCallum said they are not yet necessary. He added that they will “likely” be needed down the line. The government has promised to resettle
25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February. Mr. McCallum said he is “confident” the government will meet that target. As of Wednesday, 15,685 Syrian refugees had arrived in Canada, while another 6,059 refugees had their applications approved but had not yet travelled to Canada, according to a government website. Of the more than 15,000 refugees, 5,468 had arrived in Canada as privately sponsored refugees, 9,088 as government-assisted and 1,129 through a blend of private and government sponsorship. Another 14,206 resettlement applications are in progress, said the website. Despite the pressures on the system, the government plans to continue to welcome Syrian refugees throughout the year, with plans of resettling a total of 35,000 to 50,000 by the end of 2016.

Alberta to get $700 million in infrastruc- B.C. NDP candidates Jodie Wickens ture cash within ‘weeks to months’ and Melanie Mark win Metro Vancouver byelections
Alberta will get nearly $700 million in infrastructure money “immediately” to spur a flagging economy flattened by low energy prices. The federal and provincial governments made the announcement after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Premier Rachel Notley in Edmonton on Wednesday. Trudeau said the money was allocated to Alberta in the past but was never spent. The prime minister said the funding can be “allocated immediately to projects that will help Alberta’s economy, help Albertans get to work and, indeed, contribute to the growing of our nation’s economy.” Notley said both governments have been discussing what projects can go ahead and how the money can get to Alberta faster. “We, today, were able to confirm that the federal government will start pushing out it the door as soon as we’re ready to go,” she said. “So we really are talking a matter of months, weeks to months. Very soon.” The federal government also plans to grant the $250 million requested by Alberta under the fiscal stabilization fund to make up for the fi-
nancial impact of low oil prices on the treasury. “We’ve lost a lot of revenue,” Notley said. “So we need to try and find other sources and this is one.”Notley said she also discussed changes to the employment insurance program. Benefits are tied to the unemployment rate of a region. Due to historically low unemployment rates, Albertans must work more insured hours to qualify for benefits and they get paid for fewer weeks than do people in other parts of Canada. Trudeau said his government plans to work quickly to change those guidelines. “This is something that the premier emphasized in our meeting and I assured her that we are looking at this and working to move forward on it as rapidly as possible,” Trudeau said. Wednesday’s meeting was the first between a Canadian prime minister and an Alberta premier in Edmonton since 2005, when Paul Martin met with Ralph Klein. Notley walked down the steps of the Alberta legislature to greet Trudeau as he emerged from his car. The two leaders hugged and walked into the legislature together. Source: CBC News
Liberals Not Ruling Out Referendum On Electoral Reform, MP Holland Says
The first First Nations woman elected to the B.C. legislature won one of two byelections for the NDP in Metro Vancouver last night. The NDP’s Melanie Mark, who is part Nisga’a, Gitxsan, Cree, and Ojibway, won the riding of Vancouver-Mount Pleasant easily with 60 per cent of the vote. Housing affordability and poverty reduction were two of the key issues facing candidates in the East Vancouver riding, and Mark, who grew up in East Vancouver has a long history of as an activist, volunteer and youth worker with the community. But she also has some very personal connections to the local aboriginal community and the challenges its members face. “I was raised in social housing in East Van. I moved more than 30 times in my life. My mother, now 10 years sober, struggled with addiction living in the Downtown Eastside. My father died in the same community of an overdose when I was 23,” she wrote in a recent commentary in the Georgia Straight.
The first aboriginal ever elected to a legislature in Canada was Frank Arthur Calder, who won a seat for the B.C. NDP in Atlin in 1949. He remained an MLA until 1979. There is already one aboriginal woman who is a B.C. MLA — former NDP leader Carole James, who is part Métis. Recently Jody Wilson-Raybould, a highprofile B.C. First Nations leader won a federal seat in Vancouver Granville, and was made Canada’s justice minister by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau..

“Canada was built by citizen immigrants, people who come here permanently with their families to become Canadians.” - Hon. John McCallum, MP Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
The Liberal government is not ruling out a referendum on proposed changes to the electoral system, says the parliamentary secretary to the Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef. Ontario MP Mark Holland told The Huffington Post Canada Wednesday that the government wants to let “the process evolve.” A referendum is “not something that we are ruling in or out,” Holland said. “We don’t want to prejudge the committee’s work or the consultations that are going to take place by saying that it has to end in some particular outcome…. We are going to watch how that process unfolds.” But what would lead the government to decide to hold a referendum? Holland wouldn’t say. “I don’t know where we are in a year, I have no idea…. I’m not clairvoyant.” The government’s job is to participate in the “most robust, comprehensive engagement” possible to hear from Canadians about how they want their system to evolve, he said. At the end of a year, when a new proposal for a voting system is presented, the government will “look at where we a Holland made his comments after attending an open caucus meeting with the Senate Liberals — the Liberal members of the upper chamber who were kicked out of Trudeau’s caucus two years ago — where his appearance was greeted as somewhat of an “olive branch” by some senators.
The parliamentary secretary pledged that the government would soon strike an all-party, “non-partisan” parliamentary committee to study electoral reform that would seek to build a consensus with Canadians. “This needs to be a historic engagement of the likes that we have not seen before,” he said. Holland said he and Monsef also plan to tour the country to “supplement” the committee’s work. Ex-chief electoral officer says referendum not needed Former chief electoral officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley, York University political scientist Dennis Pilon, and Fair Vote Canada’s Kelly Carmichael also appeared before the group of Liberal senators and an audience of about 50 people. They all agreed it wasn’t necessary for the government to hold a referendum before changing the way MPs are elected. “We don’t put people’s rights to a vote,” said Pilon, who advocated for a system with more proportional representation to reflect people’s natural tendencies to vote for political parties and not individual politicians. Internationally, few referendums have approved changes to voting systems, he said, qualifying New Zealand’s recent experience as an exception. “What we know from referendums is that when you ask people the question and they don’t know what it is about, they usually say no,” he added. How Michigan’s Flint River came to poison a city
Lee-Anne Walters and her family in Flint, Michigan, drank water laced with hazardous levels of lead contamination for nearly eight months, beginning in the spring of 2014. The water was brown. Her three-year-old son Gavin broke out in a rash every time he had any contact with the water in their home. He would have clear water lines on his body after getting out of the bath. He stopped growing. The whole family broke out in rashes five times, and doctors treated them for scabies. On April 2, 2015, Gavin was diagnosed with lead poisoning. Today he is one of at least 27,000 children in the city who have been exposed to lead contamination, according to local news sources. Even though the Walters had installed plastic plumbing in their home, lead from the city’s aging potable water distribution system was seeping into the drinking water. And cities all across the US are equally vulnerable. In an attempt to save money, Flint stopped sourcing drinking water from Detroit on April 25, 2014, switching instead to the Flint River. In December, Walters alerted city and state officials to the presence of lead in her home water supply. When they failed to take decisive action, she turned to Marc Edwards, a renowned expert on water treatment and corrosion at Virginia Tech, whose prior research forced the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to acknowledge publishing a “scientifically indefensible” report about Washington DC’s compromised municipal water supply. “We coordinated a very thorough sampling of the water in her home,” Edwards told the Guardian. “And that data showed the worst example of lead and water contamination we’ve encountered in 25 years.” Walters says she recorded an average lead concentration level of 2,000 ppb (parts per billion); the highest level she recorded was 13,200 ppb. These levels are more than 200-1,300 times higher than World Health Organization standards of 10ppb, and some exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criterion for “hazardous waste” of 5,000 ppb, according to Edwards. Awarded $50,000 by the National Science Foundation to further investigate Flint’s water distribution system, Edwards found that chloride
concentrations in the city’s drinking water had soared from 11.4 mg/l to 92 mg/l after switching to the Flint River. He said high chloride levels corrode plumbing infrastructure, causing lead particles to separate from the pipe and leach into the water. This could have been prevented if, in accordance with the federal Lead and Copper Rule passed in July 1998, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) insisted on implementing a corrosion control system when they switched their water source. The MDEQ never required Flint to install corrosion control systems, nor did it set water quality parameters for the new Flint River source water, according to a September post on the Flint Water Study website run by Edwards and others. Edwards wrote that after the switch to the Flint River water, the corrosiveness level as measured by the Larson Iron Corrosion Index rose from “0.54 (low corrosion) to 2.3 (very high corrosion) and the chloride to sulfate mass ratio (CSMR) index for lead corrosion increased from 0.45 (low corrosion) to 1.6 (very high corrosion)”. MDEQ’s failure to require a corrosion inhibitor is what created the Flint water crisis in the first place, according to Edwards. In an attempt to save even more money after the switch, he says, the city managers opted not to install one voluntarily. program staff made a mistake while working with the City of Flint,” he said. “Simply stated, staff employed a federal protocol they believed was appropriate, and it was not. The water testing steps followed would have been correct for a city less than 50,000 people, but not for a city of nearly 100,000.” The main contributor of the Flint River’s high chloride concentrations, according to Edwards,
is road salt combined with the natural salt content of the river and the additional chloride the city uses to clean the water. “In US cities where ice is a problem in winter, the average road salt use per person per year is 135 pounds,” he says. “It’s incredible. In many northeastern cities because of road salt use, salt content in rivers has doubled in the last 20 years.” Dr Carla Koretsky, professor of aqueous geochemistry and biochemistry at Western Michigan University, has spent the last six years studying the effects of road salt on urban lake biochemistry.
“There’s been a tremendous increase in the use of salt across the northern US and essentially globally as well. We’re building more roads and we’re salting more,” she says. “What happens when you put salt on the ground – it dissolves and goes into the surface water and eventually that gets channeled into Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes.” It is partly for this reason, Koretsky notes, using sand is not necessarily an ideal alternative to road salt. Not only do sand particles cause respiratory problems in people, but it also causes turbidity as it moves through the water cycle. Currently the US does not consider chloride to be a pollutant. Koretsky notes the EPA only monitors the ambient or aesthetic quality of chloride, because it is not considered dangerous to human health. Canada, on the other hand, lists road salts on the second Priority Substances List (PSL2). Canada’s 1999 Environmental Protection Act

deems road salts “toxic” based on available data: “[Road salts] may have an immediate or long-term harmful effect on the environment or its biological diversity or that constitute or may constitute a danger to the environment on which life depends.” While Koretsky has not specifically studied the Flint River, she notes because rivers have a faster water flow than lakes, chloride concentrations are more easily diluted. “Especially if you stop putting salt in, the river is going to flush it out pretty quickly,” she says. W With plenty of precipitation and fresh water m moving into shallow groundwater, Korestsky eestimates salt concentrations could probably be ccleared out in a matter of decades – if the source oof the salt is cut off. The executive director of the Flint River WaterT sshed Coalition in Michigan, Rebecca Fedewa, ssays despite national furor over the city’s contaminated water, the Flint is a thriving, vibrant ta river system. ri She maintains preliminary results of recent tests S sshow the Flint River is well within healthy chloride concentrations, though that research is not ri yyet complete. She says rather than look to the river for answers, we should be looking to the ri officials responsible for botching the water treatment process. “Flint has been hit by one thing or another,” Fedewa says. “It’s a really resilient community and people love their city. This is just another tough thing for people to have to deal with, and they shouldn’t have to. This is really [about] the local state agencies dropping the ball. It’s not fair for the locals who are having to deal with it, and it’s not fair for the river to take the brunt.” Walters will be heading to Washington DC in late January to talk to the EPA’s Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water. “What happened in Flint has the potential to happen throughout the US,” she says. “And it has to be stopped.” Source : http://www.theguardian.com/

What to do during an earthquake?
What is BC Assessment?
Frequently asked questions about property assessment BC Assessment is a provincial Crown corporation that classifies and values all real property in British Columbia. Each year, BC Assessment sends property owners a Property Assessment Notice telling them the fair market value of their property as of the uniform valuation date of July 1 in the prior year. What is an assessment? An assessment is the determination of a property’s market value, classification and applicable exemptions each year. In early January, property owners receive a BC Assessment Property Assessment Notice showing the property’s value, class and applicable exemptions. This assessment is the basis used by taxing authorities for determining the share of municipal and provincial property taxes owners will pay. Why is the Assessment Notice mailed six months after the July 1 market value date? BC Assessment’s professional appraisers must review close to two million properties every year and this six month period provides staff with the time they require to ensure the annual assessment roll is as fair and accurate as possible. Appraisers must analyze real estate transactions which can occur before and after the July 1 valuation date. In the fall, appraisers also inspect new construction and development, verify the physical condition of each property as of the end of October and verify ownership through the Land Title and Survey Authority by November 30. Once this information is collected, appraisers complete the final assessment roll in early December. This work is audited for quality assurance and then notices are printed and mailed to all property owners on December 31 as required by the Assessment Act. What is market value? Market value for assessment purposes in British Columbia is the most probable price of a property in an open market between a
willing purchaser and seller. How is an assessment of property made? BC Assessment has a professional appraisal staff and an extensive database that is periodically updated with information gathered through appraisal inspections. Municipal and provincial agencies inform BC Assessment of land title changes, building permit approvals and zoning adjustments. BC Assessment also considers a property’s unique characteristics, including location, size, layout, shape, age, finish, quality, carports, garages, sundecks and condition of buildings. What is the relationship between property assessment and taxes? Provincial and municipal governments (taxing authorities) pay for public services through property taxes, which are based on assessed value. BC Assessment determines the market value of properties and sends property owners a Property Assessment Notice. Then, tax authorities determine the property tax rate they will set to raise the revenue needed to pay for public services. The tax authorities apply this rate to the assessed value of properties and send property owners a Tax Notice. Why did the value of my property change? Property values usually change as a result of real estate market forces and these forces vary by property type and location. If a property was upgraded, the value will likely increase. Zika Virus
Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon. In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil. The outbreak in Brazil led to reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes. Transmission Through mosquito bites Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (A. aegypti and A. albopictus). These are the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses. •These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and vases. They prefer to bite people, and live indoors and outdoors near people. Mosquitoes that spread chikungunya, dengue, and Zika are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night. •Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person already infected with the
H E A L T H virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites. Rarely, from mother to child •A mother already infected with Zika virus near the time of delivery can pass on the virus to her newborn around the time of birth, but this is rare. •It is possible that Zika virus could be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy. We are studying how some mothers can pass the virus to their babies. •To date, there are no reports of infants getting Zika virus through breastfeeding. Because of the benefits of breastfeeding, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed even in areas where Zika virus is found. Through infected blood or sexual contact •Spread of the virus through blood transfusion and sexual contact have been reported. Where has Zika virus been found? •Prior to 2015, Zika virus outbreaks have occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. •In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infections in Brazil. •Currently, outbreaks are occurring in many countries. •Zika virus will continue to spread and it will be difficult to determine how the virus will spread over time. Symptoms, Diagnosis, & Treatment Symptoms
•About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill (i.e., develop Zika). •The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week. •The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. •Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for a few days but it can be found longer in some people. •Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon. •Deaths are rare. Diagnosis •The symptoms of Zika are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya, diseases spread through the same mosquitoes that transmit Zika. •See your healthcare provider if you develop the symptoms described above and have visited an area where Zika is found. •If you have recently traveled, tell your healthcare provider when and where you traveled. •Your healthcare provider may order blood tests to look for Zika or other similar viruses like dengue or chikungunya. Treatment •No vaccine or medications are available to prevent or treat Zika infections.
•Treat the symptoms: Get plenty of rest. Drink fluids to prevent dehydration. Take medicine such as acetaminophen to relieve fever and pain. Do not take aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen. Aspirin and NSAIDs should be avoided until dengue can be ruled out to reduce the risk of hemorrhage (bleeding). If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking additional medication. •f you have Zika, for the first week of your illness. During the first week of infection, Zika virus can be found in the blood and passed from an infected person to another mosquito through mosquito bites. An infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people. Source : http://www.cdc.gov/zika
1. Pain Relievers Many pain relievers can provide quick relief if taken at the first sign a migraine or headache is coming on. In addition to non-prescription pain medicine, an over-the-counter anti-nauseant might also help, even if you aren’t experiencing any nausea.
2. Massage Acupressure and reflexology points on the feet and hands can be massaged for quick relief of migraine and headache pain. Try pressing on the webbed space between your thumb and pointer finger for possible relief. Head, shoulder, neck, and back massage can also provide relief by reducing muscle tension. 3. Stretching If you think tension might be contributing to your oncoming migraine, try stretches to relieve aching muscles. At the first sign of a migraine, stretch your neck by pointing your chin forward, up, and toward each shoulder and then shrug your shoulders up and forward and up and back. 4. Exercise Not only does exercising help you relax, which can help deter an oncoming migraine, but exercise also causes your body to release endorphins, our very own natural painkillers. Many people find they can ward off a migraine by going outside for a brisk walk or other form of exercise at the first sign a migraine is coming. 5. Take Butterbur While butterbur has long been known to help prevent migraines, there’s some evidence that it can also stop a migraine as it’s happening. According to Psychology Today, taking 100 milligrams of butterbur every three hours (for a total of 300 milligrams in 24 hours) might keep a migraine from taking hold. 6. Essential Oils Can Help In a study at the University of Kiel in Germany, researchers found that dabbing peppermint oil onto the forehead was an effective treatment for migraine pain, with relief
usually occurring within 15 minutes. You can also try gently massaging a couple of drops of thyme and rosemary essential oil on your temples or forehead. Both of these essential oils contain carvacrol, a substance that inhibits COX-2, an enzyme responsible for inflammation and pain. 7. Drink ginger tea It’s believed ginger works against migraines because it contains anti-inflammatory elements, inhibits prostaglandin synthesis in addition to counteracting the nausea that many migraine sufferers experience. Gently simmer three slices of gingerroot in two cups of water, covered, for 30 minutes. 8. Drink several large glasses of water Many migraine sufferers know that their migraines are brought on by dehydration. Next time you feel the onset of a migraine, try drinking several glasses of water for quick pain relief. If you don’t like to drink plain water, prepare a pitcher of water every morning with slices of cucumber to stay refreshed and hydrated. Always consult your physician or health care provider if you have medical or health questions or concerns. Source: http://migrainerelief.ca/8-tips-

By: Sadullah Khan Kindness is a difficult virtue to pursue in a world that seems to have become accustomed to hatred and injustice. Isn’t that all the more reason that we need it, writes Sadullah Khan. In a materialistic era, a world seemingly indifferent to caring about others, where ego and selfishness dominates, where war and oppression are daily headlines, there is a greater need for kindness than ever before. By kindness, however, I do not imply those actions of enlightened self-interests where one acts in response to the kindness displayed by others (an act of exchange for the benefit one has received), but rather as a moral duty that emanates from a caring heart.
Simple acts of kindness
Kindness is never wasted
Practicing daily acts of kindness is an essential element of fruitful living. Sharing kindness with others is the most rewarding and fulfilling act one can engage in. There is nothing more comforting, more gratifying for a conscientious soul than knowing that through a kind word, a helpful act, a cheerful smile you made someone’s burden a little lighter, a day little brighter or situation a little more pleasant. A kind and generous act will go further, mean more, last longer and be remembered long after the prism of polite-
If kindness has no effect on the recipient, it at least benefits the bestower; so kindness is never wasted. Do remember however that one cannot do an act of kindness too soon, for one never knows how soon it will be too late. Kindness is indeed a most noble quality, a characteristic of the Supreme Being. By: Assad Nimer Busool The teachings of the Qur’an and the Tradition of the Prophet led Muslims, regardless of their education or social status, to be kind to animals. It is true that Prophet Muhammad’s main concern was the welfare of his people. He indeed labored very hard to give them security and sustenance, and before his death, Muslims were secured and well fed wherever they were. However, this concern extended to animals and the environment too. Whenever he saw a weak, bruised, working or riding animal, he found its owner and preached him to take good care of his animal. One day, the Prophet entered a grove which belonged to one of the Ansars, and there he saw a camel. When the camel saw the Prophet , he moved toward him. Tears were flowing out of his eyes. The Prophet approached him, rubbed his head, and the camel calmed down. The Prophet asked: ‘who is the owner of this camel?’ A young man from the Ansar said: ‘He belongs to me, O messenger of Allah!’ The Prophet said: ‘Don’t you fear Allah, Who handed you the ownership of this beast? He complained to me that you do not feed him and you over work him’ (reported by Abu Dawud). Then the Prophet asked the camel’s owner ‘What are you going to do with your camel?’ The man answered: ‘we want to slaughter him while he has some flesh’. The prophet said: ‘Don’t do that! Sell him to me.’ The man answered: ‘He is yours O Messenger of Allah’. The Prophet sent him to graze with the Sadaqah camels until he died naturally… (See Ibn Kathir – Shama’il ar-Rasul) Ahmad Ibn Hanbal reported that once, Umar ibn al-Khattab, expressed his desire for a meal of fresh fish. His aid, Yarfa’, without telling him, jumped on the back of one of Umar’s camel and traveled for two nights going and two nights returning to
buy a basket of fresh fish to Umar. When he arrived home, he washed the camel. But when Umar learned of what his aid did, he said to him: ‘let me look at the camel first.’ He went to the camel and inspected it very closely, suddenly he turned to his aid saying: ‘you forgot to wash the sweat and its ears. You tortured an animal for Umar’s desires! By Allah, ‘Umar will never taste the fish, take your basket away from me.’ Based on the enormous wealth of Islamic teachings regarding the respect and protection of animals and the environment, the renown Muslim jurist Izz ad-din abd as-Saalam, formulated the following legal opinion on the right of livestock and animals from human beings: A person who owns livestock, must spend on them the provision that their kinds require, even if they have aged or sickened such that no benefit comes from them; he should not burden them beyond what they can bear; he should not put them together with anything by which they would be injured, whether of their own kind or other species, whether by breaking their bones or butting or wounding; he should slaughter them gently and with kindness; when he slaughters them, he must neither flay their skins nor break their bones until their bodies have become cold and their lives have passed away; he should not slaughter young within their sight but he should separate them; he should make comfortable their resting places and watering places; he should put their males and females together during their mating seasons; he should not discard those which he takes as game; and neither shoot them with anything that breaks their bone nor bring about their destruction by any means that renders their meat unlawful to eat. Anger in parents and its effect on our society.
By:Nafisa Siddiqui I was checking my mail and someone sent me a tragic story that I’d like to share with you; “A man had bought a new car and was polishing it, his 6 year old son picked up stone and scratched lines on the side of the car. In anger, the man took the child’s hand and hit it many times, not realizing he was using a wrench. At the hospital the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. The child looked at his father with painful eyes and asked, “Dad, when will my fingers grow back?” The man was so hurt and speechless. Devastated by his own action sitting in front of that car he looked at the scratches the child had written ‘LOVE YOU DAD” the next day the man committed suicide. After reading this tears were flowing from my eyes. I was sad and unhappy and angry too, sad about the whole incident and angry, very angry with the father and again the end part brought tears to my eyes. I am not sure about the authenticity of this story, but I remember couple of our family friends and relative who had that type of temper which caused couple of incidents of fractured hand and black eyes to my cousins, and couple of divorces which happened because anger crosses the limit and frustration blocks the rational mind leaving the person with regrets. Anger is a normal emotion. We experience it every day, but some times it gets out of control and it crosses the boundaries of decency and that state is called aggressive state of mind, at this stage our brain translate feelings very fast determining how to react to the situation and most of that at an emergency state we react in ways we either regret or we meet with dire consequence. It is unbelievable that parents can hurt their own child. I wanted to find out statistics of the anger related abusive crimes cases committed against children, older parents, at day care centers other facilities like nursing homes and hospices; the result of my research horrified me when I found out tons of hideous anger related crime cases where parents are extremely abusive and caused injuries, torture them, in number of cases burn their children and many kept them in cages and while some parents torture and killed their child. Reported child abuse case is on the rise, soaring to new heights year after year. Children are the victims of adult anger. Professor Harry J.Gaynor, Ph.D. dealing with 172 cases of the children burnt by their parents mention that in each case
abusive adult make sure that child is alone and very well know whatever he is doing to his innocent child is wrong . He does not want any witnesses to their heartless behaviors. The cause is mostly domestic disagreement lead to anger and small child is often became a target. Anger related crimes by parents. Some head lines from news papers: 1. A17month old baby slammed to the floor and banged against wall. 2. Toddler may have arm amputated as a result of severe torture and abuse. 3. Infant almost squeezed to death by father. 4. Father sentenced for killing deaf, disabled two year old son. 5. A 26-year-old mother has been convicted of steadily giving her toddler cocaine over 14 months, finally administering a near-lethal dose that left him brain-damaged. 6. Murder in the nursery, Australian mom killed her four babies. There are hundreds and hundreds of such crimes are reported every year. The overwhelming majority of children who die from abuse or neglect are under the age of four; roughly half are less than a year old. In September, 2015, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, a “Spotlight”-style non-
Among some of these cases parent have anger management problem and don’t know how to control their anger. Stress at work place, sleep deprivation and alcoholism is also plays a huge part to become abusive, stress parents are facing coping day to day life is also related to anger and frustration. Anger also occurs when a child falls short of a parent’s expectations, when kids embarrasses their parents in public, and when they show disrespect, don’t listen and play video games and use their gadgets continuously. They are not paying attention to their studies and getting poor grades. Some times toddler throw food on the wall, some children behave weirdly, teenagers refuse to follow the rules and stay out past curfew times. Some times they are stubborn and naughty and drive their parents crazy. Some parents are dealing with children with mental and physical disability. That makes most mild-mannered parents act in anger and rage. Yelling at child and giving punishment, is uncontrollable outbursts from parents and cannot improve children’s behavior. We all secretly wish that yelling can make parenting easier. We hear this dialogue routinely mother’s ordering her
profit, released a story called “Out of the profit, Shadows: Shining Light on State Failures to Learn from Rising Child Abuse and Neglect Deaths,” reporting that a hundred and ten Massachusetts children died between 2009 and 2013 These are some of the act of cruelty and anger from tons of the hideous crimes committed against their own children. The list is very long, that gives a moment of thought; how can some body be so abusive to their own child? Study shows that behind each of these crimes main factor is out of control anger. Abuse is a cycle an abused child is more likely to end up in violent or abusive relationships when he or she grows up; belonging to a dysfunctional family is another reason. Children brought up in a foster home are also an issue.
daughter or son every day when they are getting ready for school “Get dressed right now, where are your shoes? Can’t you keep your stuff in place, stop playing around close the TV right now, stop wasting time you are going to make me late for work, and do you have any idea if I loose my job”. But one thing is for sure anger doesn’t work it’s your frustration you are taking out. It’s so traumatic that child was born into our cold, harsh world to find himself dependent on an angry father and upset mom. It is a lose-lose situation for that poor baby, punishment is not the most effective way to communicate. Our action should be motivated to protect and to reach the child not with a desire to teach him or her lesson by punishing. Parents and elders are the role model for child .What parents do to their children
serves as lessons and later it becomes a model for children’s behavior. The chances are that children of angry parents will be next angry generation. Spanking is not an effective way of parenting it focuses on negative behavior and shows that it’s ok to hurt some one, it may lead to low self-esteem,depression, stress and trauma which can lead to risk st of using drug or alcohol. o A Anger is a normal emotion; some peop ple have very little control over their aanger and tend to explode in rages. S Some times “Raging anger pushes our b body in a mode that is not needed and la later we regret the way we responded or h handled the situation, that anger stage is aabusive, that emotional state caused by fr frustration end up in aggression and the aaggressive person often attempt to hurt th the other person or try to destroy propeerty. 2011 Stanley cup is a big example where crowd got angry when Canucks lost the final. The conclusion is clear: Anger is bad for you at any age. Among young adults, it’s a predictor of premature heart disease later in life according to Harvey Simon, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, anger and heartbreaks are natural, they need to be felt and worked through, but they should not become your way of life. Children are gifts … treasures … jewels. As angry as you may be, remember how much you love them. Never let yourself forget that. Remembering the World Record Set By PAF Fighter Pilot Zafar Masud and His Team
By Nasim Yousaf This piece honors some of our iconic fighter pilots from the past and celebrates their unprecedented achievement, which brought pride to the Pakistani nation. Air Commodore M. Zafar Masud was a decorated fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force. He was a recipient of the Hilal-i-Jurat (the second highest military award) and Sitara-iBasalat (in 1965 and 1971 respectively) and also a hero of the 1965 war. In 1958, then Wing Commander Masud led his team of pilots to a remarkable feat – they set a world record at the Pakistan air show.
On February 02, 1958, prominent political and military leaders gathered at Masroor (previously Mauripur) Pakistan Air Force Base in Karachi, Pakistan to watch the spectacular air show of the Pakistani fighter pilots. Attendees included King Mohammad Zahir Shah (Afghanistan), President Iskander Mirza (Pakistan), Commanders-in-Chief of Iran, Iraq and Turkey, ambassadors of various countries, Pakistani Federal Cabinet Ministers, civil and military elite, and other notable individuals. Domestic and international media were also present to cover the event. In total, over 30,000 people were in attendance. At approximately 9:30 a.m. on the day of the show, 16 fighter jets (F-86 Sabres), led by the renowned pilot Zafar Masud, flew in formation and performed a precise diamond-shaped loop. The pilots, who had been preparing for weeks together, thus set a world record and received international acclaim. Air Chief Marshal, Jamal A. Khan, in his article entitled “Mitty Masud folds his wings,” wrote in Dawn (Karachi, October 13, 2003): “…Wing Commander Masud…
[led] an aerobatics team of 16 Sabre jets that set a world record, validating the PAF’s place among the well-regarded air arms of the world.” British aviation magazine The Aeroplane praised the performance in its issue on February 14, 1958: “The 16 Sabres of the ‘Falcon’ aerobatic team led by Wg. Cdr. M.Z. Masud, then came in at about 5,000 ft to start their loop in diamond formation, which was maintained impeccably throughout the maneuver. It was a highly accomplished feat of flying, completed with an efficiency equal to any air force in the world.” The Aeroplane also published a group photo of the pilots (in its issue of February 07, 1958) and the formation in the air in two different issues (February 14 and 21, 1958). It was a proud moment for the Pakistan Air Force as well as the aviation community as a whole. Credit for this world record, which brought tremendous honor to Pakistan and the PAF, goes to Masud and his team. The full team comprised of M. Zafar Masud, S.S. Haider, A.U. Ahmed, N. Latif, S.U. Khan, H. Anwar, Munir, M. Arshad, Jamal Khan, Lodhi, G. Haider, S.M. Ahmed, Aftab Ahmed, W. Azim, Sadruddin, and Middlecoat. More information on Air Commodore Zafar Masud is available in the book entitled Air
Commodore M. Zafar Masud – A Pioneer of the Pakistan Air Force (published in 2015 in the USA in print and digital formats). A dedicated Facebook page and a YouTube channel have been created in his memory and for the benefit of researchers, students, and members of the general public. The author, Mr. Nasim Yousaf, is a historian and researcher based in the USA. Mr. Yousaf has published 15 books as well as many articles and compiled 19 digital files of rare and historical documents, including Al-Islah weekly (1930s-40s). YOUTH
Who is responsible for this Muslim rage?
By: Aslam Abdullah Recently, a British newspaper reported that a British-born Muslim stood before a crowd and announced what he considered to be Prophet Mohammed’s message to non believers: “I come to slaughter all of you.” Another Muslim is reported to have said “We are the Muslims, We drink the blood of the enemy, and we can face them anywhere. That is Islam and that is jihad.” To pick these Muslim youth as examples, and show case them as the problem with Muslims is not fair. But let us declare on our part, loudly and clearly, No! This is not Islam, and No! This is not how Prophet Muhammad defined God’s work. What an irony that a religion that promotes voluntary submission to God and seeks peaceful changes in the heart and mind of individuals can become a faith of hatred in the slogans of those who are unable to control their anger. In their hatred of the west, they have become blind to the extent that they cannot see their own faith rationally and objectively. They have become ignorant of the Quran that refers to Prophet Muhammad as “a mercy to humankind”. What has led these youngsters to believe
what they believe in? Who is responsible for that? One can easily blame Israel and the West or the media or whatever. One can blame the daily slaughter of Muslims in the streets of Afghanistan and Iraq for these extreme views. However, if we look inward, we can also find fingers pointing to us. Let us take stock of our own problems first before we start blaming others for our problems. In today’s Muslim world, unfortunately we find a number of examples that show little value for the life of an ordinary Muslim. The dignity of a human being or the rights of men and women are lamenting tales of the past, the principals of which we read in either the Quran or the authentic sayings of the Prophet . In our recent history, one can come up with several examples where Muslims have perpetrated violent crimes against fellow Muslims. What happened during the reign of Saddam Hussein in Iraq is well known. What happened in Iran during Shah Reza’s regime is not hidden. How many Muslims were killed in Iraq-Iran war? No one even remembers. How many Palestinians were killed by the Jordanian or Lebanese army, no one dares to talk about. How many peaceful citizens were hanged to death in Egypt or slaughtered in Syria, Libya and Sudan by those claiming to be Muslims? No one wants to know. Some sixty percent of the Muslim world’s populations live below the poverty line, ex-
periencing humiliation and deprivation every day. Few among Muslims are willing to talk about this. Some 300,000 Muslim girls are abducted and sold in markets all over the world as sex slaves and no one talks about it. About 53 percent Muslims all over the world are illiterate and most regimes are only concerned about improving their own financial stockpiles. Muslims must admit that our leaders and masses have failed to preserve the dignity of human beings in societies where they are in majority. We have neglected the poor, the needy, the disadvantaged and the deprived. We have de-valued the life of those who are within our camps. Shia-Sunni killing and ethnic strife all over the Muslim world speak volumes of the discord among Muslims and their frailer to adhere to the Quranic principals of peace and justice. Our intellectuals have failed us. Our religious leadership has failed us and our political leaders have pushed us into an abyss of humiliation and shame. We must admit that before we can move forward. Our recovery from the debacle in which we are quarantined would not come through our anti-west slogans or through our anti-Israeli rhetoric. It will come when we will seriously think and work for the dignity of each and every human that is relegated to a status of non entity. We have to develop an agenda that will establish the God given rights and dignity to all women, laborers, the poor and marginalized people in all Muslim societies. We have to develop an agenda that will see other human beings regardless of their religious background as a beautiful creation of the divine deserving the same dignity that we seek for ourselves. Through this agenda of human dignity, we have to stand for every human life and defend its right to live at peace with itself and others. Without that, we would never
be able to live up to the ideals that Prophet Muhammad set for his followers. Without that, we would not be able to submit to the Divine who defines Himself as the most Merciful and most Gracious. Self-Respect!

TOPICS
By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor
Self-respect is crucial to self-care because it protects you from settling for less when you deserve the best. This is toxic to how you view yourself and how you allow others to treat you, your values and your boundaries. If you allow others to trample over your expectations constantly, you’re debasing your worth and chopping away at your self-esteem. You might be afraid that if you have high standards for yourself, people might perceive you as a highmaintenance person and even abandon you in the process. Let them. In fact, it’s probably a good thing that they do abandon you and reveal their true colors. At the end of the day, your opinion of yourself and what you deserve is all that truly matters in life. Having high standards for yourself, your career and relationships protects you in the longrun. Think of things that fall below your standards as bad experiences. You’re not getting what you need and want out of it, but the person on the other side is. It’s not worth the investment if someone else is benefiting from the positive return. Life is too short to waste your energy by allocating resources into goals that are not truly your own. Caring for ourselves means remaining authentic and recognizing our true passions. Don’t be pressured into picking a certain career path just because society says it’s the right one for you, don’t always settle for crappy jobs just because they’ll pay the rent, don’t pursue a major just because of its financial rewards unless it’s some-

Ingredients thing that really interests you. Sometimes you will have to do with what you have in order to survive, but be sure you’re still looking for ways to improve yourself and progress to something better and something that represents your true self. For example, if you dream of writing the next big screenplay, continue working on it when you have the time. Setting aside time to pursue your dreams is important because these are things no one can take away from you. You own the right to all of your dreams and the ability to make them come to life. The key is to still be practical, but also to be passionate. You were not meant to live this life doing just what is required to survive; you were meant to live life chasing your dreams. Don’t be afraid of failure, because failure is a learning experience that will strengthen you and prepare you to do better in the future. Would you rather sit around and live in the regret of not knowing what would’ve happened if you had tried or would you rather lead an exciting life by taking on risks and challenges that will ultimately lead you to what you were meant to do? “A Taste Of Homeland”! By: Fatima Nadeem, Surrey
I have always believed that even if I may live in Canada a part of me will always reside in Pakistan and it warms my heart to have had a chance to visit after 3 years. I had lots of great experiences and some in which I was very frustrated but allow me to give you a tour of my experiences in Pakistan. Obviously when I was leaving I was very excited and delighted to go and visit my relatives and after a very exhausting journey we finally arrived. Let me be honest the first thing you notice is the fact on how polluted the air, living in Canada we are used to clean air but as soon as you breathe you get a smell of dirt, smoke and lots of other things I’d rather not mention. After a while you get used to it, in the meantime we were meeting with our uncles, aunts, cousins, second-cousins, nieces, nephews and if I were
to continue we would be here for a while but you get the idea, yet it was still so much fun. Now, it’s not Pakistan until we get to the food, I’m sure you all know about the endless supply of food (the Biryanis’, Haleems’, Niharis’). Those are just the homemade foods but the restaurants make you want to never you leave, I’ll just mention some of my favorite such as “Gourmet Grill”, “Salt ’N Pepper”, “DESOM” and “Hsin Kuang”. My all-time favorite experience was going to “Food Street”, where we saw a man preforming tricks with fire. We got to eat barbecue in the open while enjoying the view of the “Badshahi Masjid” and “Lahore Fort”. The Badshahi Masjid is the fifth largest mosque in the world. It was made by a Mughal Emperor named Aurangzeb about 330 years. What’s interesting about Lahore Fort is that no one actually know who built it, there are myths but no definite answer. The fort was built around the 11th century and was destroyed and rebuild several times but this particular one was built around the same time as the Masjid. Facts aside, just being together was the most fun of all. They are constantly improving the place because they recently added sightseeing or tour bus. We all know that there some difficulties in Pakistan such as electricity load shedding, which is basically like every second hour you don’t have electricity and obviously sometimes it is gone for a long time like once we had spent 4-5 hours without electricity. The point of this is to reduce electricity consumption….I think. Anyway if there is no electricity there is no water or just very cold water and get me started on the gas problem, you see their stoves, heating and hot water are connected to gas and whenever the city turns it off you either have no
food, are freezing or both but it’s still amazing……right. Oh but I am not finished we still have the wonderful roads and traffic to talk about. See, half of the roads are unfinished or broken and I think it’s safe to say that the drivers are in love with their horns-allow me to elaborate you can count but you will hear a car horn so often it’s unusual if you don’t hear it, (24s is the longest period of time I’ve gone without hearing a horn). You also don’t have to wear a seat belt or a car seat, in fact you can sit on the roof and no one will say anything (not that I would know). Anyway the most frustrating are the motorbikes who are trying to wind their way through and if that’s not bad enough drivers seem to think that they own the road, so let’s just say the excitement does NOT happen on the road. No one think that I feel is both amazing and frustrating at the same time is shopping. There are still amazing clothes with prices that reach the roof. Many designer shops like Sana Safinaz, Khaadi, Maria B., Junaid Jamshed and many, many more. As you can see the demand is high which also means the prices high. So everything is extremely expensive. And one of the really, I wouldn’t say amazing but convenient things are the use of maids, every house
has 2 maids at the very least. So basically you can yell her name and to bring you a glass of water and she will get it for you. This also means that you NEVER have to clean up your room or wash the dishes or take out the garbage. Of course, being the very nice person I am, I never took advantage of that and tried to help as much as I can. Considering all of this, and even the bad parts, I still think it was an AMAZING trip, I mean hanging out with relatives, eating lots of tasty food, getting to visit historical places, even siting 4 hours without electricity, warm water and gas and the horrid traffic, the polluted air and the luxury of maids are all awesome and mostly humorous when you think about them. Those are all contributing events and factors of an amazing, funny, eventful and fulfilling trip. I feel like I’m saying this the 50th time but still “I HAD A BLAST!!” and I already look forward to the next time I go.

U-19 World Cup: All-round Hasan takes Pakistan into quarter-final Pakistan rode on a fine all-round performance by Hasan Mohsin to defeat Sri Lanka by 23 runs in the last league match and top Group B in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh on Wednesday. Mohsin top-scored with 86 and then rattled Sri Lanka with two early wickets as Pakistan fought back after being dismissed for 212 to bowl its rival out for 189 in Mirpur. Pakistan will take on the West Indies in the fourth quarter-final in Fatullah on February 8. Sri Lanka, which finished second in the group, meets England on February 7 in Mirpur. Pakistan’s total was built around Mohsin’s attractive run-a-ball innings, which was studded with eight hits to the fence and a six. Pakistan was struggling at 96-4 after being sent in to bat on a hazy morning when Mohsin stepped in to stem the rot with a 61run stand for the fifth wicket with Salman Fayyaz (33). Mohsin, who was on 61 at the fall of the seventh wicket, smashed 23 runs in the 47th over bowled by seamer Asitha Fernando which included five runs for an overthrow. Moshin was bowled in the next over, trying
to reverse sweep left-arm spinner Damitha Silva, who finished with two wickets for 41 runs.Thilan Nimesh and Wanidu Hasaranga also claimed two wickets each, but ambidextrous 17-year-old Kamindu Mendis caught the eye with his rare talent to bowl both right-arm off-breaks and left-arm spin. Mendis gave away 21 runs in four wicketless overs. Mohsin, who was later named man of the match, stung early in Sri Lanka’s reply, grabbing the first two wickets by the sixth over with his medium-pace bowling. Sri Lanka was reduced to 63-4 before Mendis, who bats left-handed, scored 68 and Vishad Randika made 46 while adding 84 for the fifth wicket. Pakistan kept the pressure on the batsmen to clinch victory in the 47th over as legspinner Shadab Khan finished with three for 31 runs. Sameen Gul, Mohsin and Ahmad Shafiq shared six wickets between them. Pakistan captain Zeeshan Malik said defeating Sri Lanka had lifted the team’s morale for the quarter-final against the West Indies. “I think we played very good cricket today, both with the bat and ball,” he said. “Mohsin
was very good but all the bowlers did well. “We look forward to our quarter-final and hopefully we will go beyond that as well.” Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka blamed the defeat on the batsmen’s inability to string partnerships, but said his team did not fear England. “The batting went wrong today,” he said. “The top order batsmen couldn’t score runs and form partnerships. Mendis and Randika had a good stand but we couldn’t do our job in the end. “England is a good side. We played each other in December. But I think the condi-
tions will support us. Our spinners are in good form, so I think this will be an advantage for us.” Scores in brief: Pakistan 212 all, 48.4 overs (Hasan Mohsin 86, Salman Fayyaz 33; Damitha Silva 2-41, Thilan Nimesh 2-38, Wanidu Hasaranga 2-30) Sri Lanka 189 all out, 46.4 overs (Kamindu Mendis 68, Vishad Randika 46; Shadab Khan 3-31, Sameen Gul 2-29, Hasan Mohsin 2-28, Ahmad Shafiq 2-23). After quiet build-up, PSL gears for take-off
Sachin Tendulkar smiles at you as you disembark at the opulent Dubai International airport. As you zip your way through the spacious lanes into downtown, and take in the vertical delights of the Dubai skyline, you notice players featuring in the Masters Champions League (MCL) staring out from the billboards. You walk through the opulent malls, listen to the morning radio, watch local television, drive in city taxis - nowhere is there a sign, an indication, a banner that tells you that the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL) starts on Thursday in Dubai. It is actually starting tomorrow. The five franchises - Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators have been working hard over the past few days, getting ready for what former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram calls the “biggest thing to happen” in the country’s cricket scene. The outsider will see the PSL as just another league in the conveyer belt of franchise-based Twenty20 competitions that have populated the cricket calendar in the past five years. Yet, for Pakistan the PSL holds a lot of meaning. It is not just about thumping your chest and declaring: Look, we, too, now have a league with global T20 superstars like Chris Gayle, Kevin Pietersen, Shane Watson, Andre Russell and, let us not forget, Shahid Afridi. It is also, as Afridi says, about “izzat” [prestige], with the cricketing world waiting to see how the PSL performs. According to Afridi, captain of the
Peshawar Zalmi franchise, the main reason the PSL is being organised is to see if any new talent emerges: “A new Wasim Akram, a new Waqar Younis, a Javed Miandad, a Shoaib Malik should emerge. That will only be good for Pakistan cricket.” Luckily Pakistan have always been blessed with precocious talent, but that is not enough in modern cricket, especially in T20s where pressure is a constant. That is why the experience of interacting with international players who have been successful in different situations, in tight and big matches, is handy. “Most Pakistanis say the PSL should be happening in Pakistan, but obviously for unforeseen reasons it is not happening, but the longterm plan is it will. But all the young cricketers would be rubbing shoulders with some of the greats of the modern game like Shane Watson, Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle, Brad
Haddin, Andre Russell, living with them, watching them for 20-odd days, watching their training drills, what is their psyche. All this is not part of our first-class structure. This is a learning curve for the Pakistan youngsters,” Akram, who has the dual roles of the tournament ambassador and the Islamabad franchise director, says. The PSL also presents an equal learning opportunity for franchise owners. Akram believes both the league and the franchises will need to be more professional, focusing on the smaller things if the PSL has to grow into a global brand. “At the moment, things like timings for the matches, the nets are flexible. We should have a chart and we should stick to that,” Akram says. “There are little hiccups like not getting the kit on time, not having the caps and small things like that. The PSL said they would make all the kits, but
they have taken too much on board. So it is a learning thing for both PSL and the franchises.” The PSL might have missed a trick by not adopting the formula used by the IPL to garner sell-out crowds in the two weeks the Indian league was played in the UAE in 2014. The IPL had to move to the UAE after its schedule clashed with the general elections in India but, as an established league, the tournament created promotional packages, invested in big advertising, organised matches over the weekends and flew in fans from India. Atmosphere and creating the right kind of noise is an important part of the T20 spectacle. Although the title song for each of the five franchises has a catchy tune, it remains to be seen whether the music will be played to an empty or full house. Najam Sethi, the PSL chairman, says he had limited budgets and hence could not indulge in marketing as widely and loudly as he would have desired. On ticketing, however, he remains unperturbed. “I would not say it is an obsession with us. We do want as many people to come. We want people to demonstrate their nationalism, their support and affection for the PSL. But to say ticket sales are going to be critical to our financial model is not correct.” Despite all the teething issues and a few embarrassing false starts, the PSL is finally a reality. It is, as Sethi says, ready to take off. Source: Cricinfo
