here is always TV coverage of the latest headlines, but we tend to dig deep for the details through perusing the available printed stuff as that offers more convenience, indeed. It helps us to know the world well; sitting at home in Canada or elsewhere, we can read what is going on all over the world. As the printmedia is a way of publishing any kind of news in the print form, the readers are more attracted to read the dailies, the weeklies and the biweeklies. Many readers are more interested in the print media, because the hard copy is palpable. In other words, the tangibility aspect makes the printed-form more attractive . This is why, many people still prefer printed editions to enjoy special feel of the paper. This means the print media remains a trusted source for news and other information. However, the online access is on the rise. Though, social media is engaged with Google and YouTube to watch the latest videos, yet the readers of the printed editions can have immediate online-access to the most relevant page . This connects print media with the electronic presence, inviting consumer reaction, feedback and purchase. Latest version of cel phones, tablets and other computers have made such bridging easier than thought previously. The print media has been largely responsible for running educational ads for the ordinary people.
‘Congratulation Miracle’ By: Massood Joomratty, Lawyer, Surrey
I am proud to have known The Miracle since its birth. I have seen it stand up and run right from the beginning. It had no time to crawl or walk. Despite some challenges along the way,
Like others, Canadian newspapers continue to face challenges and competition in their role as bearers of news in the information technology age. Despite the challenges, newspapers are doing excellent work through performing the job of giving the people what they want to know with clarity. In other words, there is a commitment of Canada’s newspapers to operate in the public interest. A newspaper is a vital source of information and is a private business enterprise that serves the community with responsibility Newspaper law covering matters of libel, contempt of court and copyright, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms were passed as part of the Canadian constitution in 1981; all this guarantees “freedom of thought, belief, opinion, expression, and freedom of media to all people. Freedom of Press is essential to the democratic society; it’s based on Canadian’s right to freedom of expression available with guarantee through the Canadian “Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” It includes the right to collect and publicize information. It’s the “free press” that enables readers to use their Charter rights to receive information and make informed judgments on the current issues. Ethically and legally speaking, only accurate and unbiased reporting is acceptable: Obviously, the newspaper keeps faith with readers by presenting only correct and up to date information. The com-
rely on to keep up to date with news that matter to them. Mr Pirzada is for ever present at events and his laughter and smile is infectious. The Miracle has grown into an integral part of the community and I wish the team plenty of success and long life in the industry and the community. Happy Anniversary. May you run faster and stay healthy!
munity newspapers are said to be of sound practice if there is clear distinction in news reporting along with expressions of opinion, and materials produced for and by the advertisers. Other challenges: Community religious leaders including various associations tend to keep the newspaper editors and owners under pressure; they are interested in the coverage the way they want regardless of the consequences. In fact, controversial ads make the news paper editors/owners bend backward while looking for a way out. And no one seems to realize the free newspaper only can continue in business through putting ads in the paper in order to generate revenue. No matter what, newspaper remains responsible to its readers, its shareholders, its employees and its advertisers, of course. True, a newspaper plays a variety of roles for the civil society but building community opinion is the most important one. Despite the odds, editors strive hard to paint a representative picture of its diverse communities in order to encourage the expression of disparate views. At the same time, it has to be accessible and accountable to the readers of all kinds and levels. The current tide of change is likely to bring about pressures on the need for more skills, and ability to respond quickly. This translates into compromised quality to as-
and produce peaceful solutions and suggestions to all kinds of problems faced by the people of the world. Such dedicated devotion of serving all the communities is likea ‘Shining Star’, and true meaning of pluralism. Without such pluralism there is no peace. Over the years Miracle has done immense advanced progressive changes, covering the
size for the column letters and the opinions. May Allah-Creator-GOD bless you and give long life to the ‘Miracle’ paper. Editor Note: Thanks for your letter of congratulation and suggestion. Actually when sometimes letters exceed with this space then we need to change font size, but we act at your suggestion right now.

Sharif threatens to clip NAB’s wings
After Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, the rulers from Punjab are feeling the heat of accountability and, apparently in a preventive move, they have started warning the National Accountability Bureau to act carefully or get ready for clipping of its wings. The warning to NAB came from none other than Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif himself on Tuesday. He indicated the government was considering amending the law if NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry does not address his reservations. The prime minister’s body language and tone clearly suggested that all is not well between his government and NAB. Talking of his reservations about NAB, Nawaz Sharif said: “The NAB is harassing government officers. They (bureaucrats) are afraid of taking decisions (signing of files of different projects) because of the NAB harassment. The NAB terrifies the government officers, hindering them from performing their duty.” The prime minister was addressing newly-elected local government representatives of PML-N in Bahawalpur. He further said the NAB officials entered the houses and offices of “innocent people” without verifying the authenticity of corruption or other charges. Sounding categorical on his future course of action, PM Sharif said: “I have brought the matter to the notice of the NAB
chairman a couple of times. He should take notice. Otherwise, the government will take legal action in this regard.” Earlier, the PPP’s Sindh government chided NAB for only laying hands on its party. The KP’s Ehtesab Commission director general, retired Lt Gen Mohammad Hamid Khan, resigned last week “in protest against promulgation of an ordinance by the provincial government that drastically amended the Ehtesab Act of 2015”. A source in NAB told Dawn that the prime minister had shown his frustration over the bureau after it hinted at ‘thoroughly’ investigating some of the projects like LNG, Metro Bus, Orange Train and LDA City. Besides, NAB has yet to clear the premier in cases of recruitment in the Federal Investigation Agency and construction of Raiwind Road. A couple of PML-N legislators from Daska and Okara, Punjab Education and Sports Minister Rana Mashhood and a close aide to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif are also facing corruption inquiries. “The main thing bothering PM Sharif is that the NAB chairman is not allowing the PML-N government to interfere in the bureau’s affairs, raising his suspicions about some kind of unofficial liaison between the NAB and the establishment,” he said. NAB spokesman Nawazish Ali remained tight-lipped when Dawn asked him about the status of NAB investigation into Metro Bus/Orange Train, FIA recruitment, LNG and Raiwind Road cases. Advocate Saad Rasool told Dawn that the government might bring an ordinance before tabling a bill in parliament to make NAB like Ehtesab Bureau of Saifur Rehman. “The displeasure the prime minister showed about the NAB today indicates the he intends to curtail the powers of its chairman. Under Section 270 of the Constitution, the NAB chief is independent in administrative affairs and is not answerable to anyone. Through amendment the reporting authority of the NAB head can be the prime minister,” he said. Anyone having grievances against NAB could move court and this was the only option available under the law, Mr Rasool added. Source: Dawn.com
In a rather ominous warning, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has asked the nation to be cautious as “something big” is likely to take place in the next few days. The announcement comes following the retrieval of the MQM chief’s passport on Tuesday following cancellation of bail in a money laundering case earlier this month. Urging citizens to prepare themselves for what might be coming, Altaf said, “The next 15 days are very crucial.” “Citizens should stock up their homes with food and necessary items. They should take precautions while going out,” Altaf warned. Responding to Altaf’s prediction, party spokesperson and Rabita Committee member Aminul Haque sid, “The change
can either be political, climatic or of any other sort.” However, Haque did not delve into further details about the MQM chief’s warning. “Whatever the MQM chief has predicted during his struggle of 38 years has come true,” Haque said. The MQM leader further said the party would now sit together and decide what to do next. Following the forecast, the Rabita Committee in Pakistan and London held an emergency meeting and decided to appeal to the public by sending a statement to the media. The party appealed to the nation to take precautionary measures while leaving their homes and to pile up food, medicines and other necessities. The party has also issued a statement which states that MQM leaders have already discussed the political situation CPA, CGA Approved by most Banks and Credit Unions of the country and as well as the possibility of natural disasters. “Altaf Hussain had already predicted about the dangers Open Saturday by Appointment of Taliban and ISIS in Pakistan, but instead of taking the threats seriously, he was made fun of,” the statement read. # 2 02 -72 88 137 S t , S u r r e y “The next 15 days are very critical and therefore the party ( B e h in d S a v e o n F o o d s ) would play its role in spreading the message of Altaf,” it added. KSA hails global fight plan Daesh used mustard gas in Iraq, against Daesh confirm samples
RIYADH: The Cabinet has welcomed the plan by several countries to join the fight against Daesh. This is in reference to the decision by NATO’s defense ministers, at a meeting at the organization’s headquarters in Brussels, to launch the offensive against the terrorist group. The Kingdom’s delegation was led by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, second deputy premier and defense minister. At the outset of the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman on Monday, the monarch briefed the ministers on his meetings with a former British prime minister and the Swiss foreign minister. King Salman also highlighted his meeting with the secretary-general of the International Telecoms Union, who honored the monarch with an award on sustainable development, to mark the organization’s 150th
anniversary. The Cabinet explored a number of reports related to developments at regional and international levels, notably developments in Syria, and lauded the progress of meetings held by the International Support Group for Syria in Munich, Germany, which included 17 countries, the United Nations, European Union, Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.. Man taken into custody after bank standoff in troubled area of Surrey, B.C.
AMSTERDAM: Daesh terrorists attacked Kurdish forces in Iraq with mustard gas last year, the first known use of chemical weapons in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein, a diplomat said, based on tests by the global chemical weapons watchdog. A source at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed that laboratory tests had come back positive for the sulfur mustard, after around 35 Kurdish troops were sickened on the battlefield last August. The OPCW will not identify who used the chemical agent. But the diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because the findings have not yet been released, said the result confirmed that chemical weapons had been used by Islamic State fighters. The samples were taken after the soldiers became ill during fighting against Daesh militants southwest of Erbil, capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region. The OPCW already concluded in October that mustard gas was used last year in neighboring Syria. Daesh has declared a “caliphate” in territory it controls in both
Iraq and Syria and does not recognize the frontier. Experts believe that the sulfur mustard either originated from an undeclared Syrian chemical stockpile, or that militants have gained the basic know how to develop and conduct a crude chemical attack with rockets or mortars. Iraq’s chemical arsenal was mainly destroyed in the Saddam era, although US troops encountered some old Saddam-era chemical munitions during the 2003-2011 US occupation. Syria gave up its own chemical weapons, including stockpiles of sulfur mustard, under international supervision after hundreds of civilians were killed with sarin nerve gas in a Damascus suburb in 2013, an attack Western countries blame on President Bashar Assad’s government. Sulfur mustard is a Class 1 chemical agent, which means it has very few uses outside chemical warfare. Used with lethal effectiveness in World War One, it causes severe delayed burns to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Source: Arab News.com
New mortgage rules kick in as Ottawa looks to cool Toronto, Vancouver markets SURREY, B.C. – A six-hour standoff outside a Surrey, B.C., bank shut down a bustling commercial district before tactical officers entered the building and discovered a man hiding on the second floor, police say. The robbery suspect had been holed up in the TD Canada Trust branch located just one block from the district’s community police office, said RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann. “Officers were on scene within a minute,” he told reporters and a crowd of citizens gathered outside the office Tuesday. “Throughout the day we made several attempts to communicate with anybody who may be inside. After receiving no response after hours of trying, eventually our tactical teams … entered. They did find one adult male hiding in the top floor of the bank.” The man who was not identified was taken into custody and transported to a cell at the RCMP detachment. Mounties were considering recommending an attempted robbery charge, but were still reviewing evidence to determine what would be appropriate, Schumann said. Staff and customers at the bank were already outside by the time officers responded to multiple calls about an attempted robbery at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. There were never any suggestions of a hostage-taking, Schumann said. When officers brought out the man, who appeared to be in his 20s or 30s and was wearing a blue plaid shirt, onlookers standing behind police tape at a nearby intersection applauded. “I was hoping it would end peacefully, but I’m sad to see it’s a young man — another youth,” local resident Patricia Merritt said.
Merritt said she had lived in the Newton area of Surrey for 20 years and had seen crime rise in the troubled community. “We were talking about the good old days, when we used to walk from one end of Newton to the other without worries. And now to see our little Newton become unsafe, it’s pretty sad.” Rhonda Kerr said just before noon she heard police make announcements over a megaphone, saying, “The place is surrounded, come out with your hands up or we will come in.”Her daughter Tiarra Kerr said that about 10 minutes later an officer made a second announcement: “Somebody is calling the bank now. Please pick up the phone so we can establish communication so we can see what you need.” Kerr said she was happy the standoff ended peacefully and not in gunfire. After the man was found, police said they were continuing to scour a wide radius around the bank and inside the building to ensure the premises were safe. Officers didn’t immediately locate a weapon after initially receiving reports suggesting the suspect had been armed. An explosive disposal unit was on scene with a remote-controlled robot equipped with cameras that allow officers to remotely look inside the bank without putting themselves in danger, Schumann said. “The threat of a bomb never existed,” he said. Schumann addressed concerns from members of the public who complained police didn’t take action quickly enough. “These types of files are very complex,” he said. “In this particular incident, we had no reason to rush into the bank.”

Canadians looking to buy homes between $500,000 and $1 million will have to put down larger down payments as new federal rules took effect Monday. Under the changes, homebuyers must now put at least 10 per cent down on the portion of a home that costs more than $500,000. Buyers can still put down five per cent on the first $500,000 of a home purchase. Homes that cost more than $1 million still require a 20 per cent down payment. Phil Soper, president and CEO of Royal LePage, says the new rules aim to slow the breakneck pace of price growth in the red-hot markets of Toronto and Vancouver without affecting markets that are lagging, such as those in oil-dependent provinces. “The problem with monetary policy is that it impacts the struggling Calgary market or the just fine Winnipeg market and the overheated Vancouver market in equal amounts,” Soper said. “If you lower interest rates, you lower interest rates for all. And that’s not what the country needed. This change ... is the first attempt to recognize the fact that some parts of the country are in need of a mild tap on the break, while other parts of the country really need to continue to receive stimulus.” When the new rules were announced in December, Finance Minister Bill Morneau said he estimat-
ed they would affect about one per cent of the overall real estate market. Some industry observers predicted a surge in sales activity as homebuyers would look to pre-empt bigger down payment requirements. Soper says real estate markets in Ontario, B.C. and Quebec have been “boisterous” in the first five weeks of the year — but he says it’s unlikely that the new mortgage rules are responsible. “I think it has much more to do with clean sidewalks from a mild winter and low mortgage rates than it does with impending changes that tweak mortgage insurance regulations,” Soper said. “It’s just not a big enough change to have materially impacted home sales volumes in the country.” Ottawa tightened rules for new insurable loans four times between 2008 and 2012, including upping the minimum down payment to five per cent and reducing the maximum amortization period in stages to 25 years from 40 years. The Miracle’s Journey of Fifteen Years
(Feb 2001- 2016)
fteen The Miracle’s journey in the lastfitwelve years has been ¿lled with many milestones. Some of them marked exciting and uplifting moments while a few may be arbitrarily remembered as disappointments. Nevertheless, each moment provided us with an opportunity to learn and improve, and only solidi¿ed our belief in this newspaper’s role in the community. While we faced many challenges in public and private, we have chosen a selected few events that raised our con¿dence in ourselves and in our community and hence, set the course of direction for the newspaper’s future. This may be a trip down the memory lane for a lot of our readers and advertisers who have been with the newspaper from Day 1 and supported us.

F A I T H Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.” 8/49 hadith in ‘Belief’ of Sahih Bukhari.
It’s not weakness to remain silent A man reviled Abu Bakr in the presence of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet remained seated. He looked pleased and smiled. He insulted Abu Bakr twice, but Abu Bakr controlled himself and remained silent. He insulted him for a third time, and Abu Bakr then let his tongue loose and responded back. At that, the Messenger of Allah got up and left. Abu Bakr followed after the Prophet and said: “Messenger of Allah! He insulted me and you just sat there. Then when I responded to some of what he said, you became angry and got up.” The Prophet said: “There was an angel with you who was responding to his insults on your behalf.” Then the Prophet said: “Abu Bakr, (keep in mind) three things which are always true, one of which is that whenever a person is subjected to an injustice but leaves the matter to Allah, then Allah will come to his aid… .” (Musnad Ahmad) It is not a weakness to remain silent. It takes real strength. What others say will only hurt you if you let it. Construct within yourself a “refuse treatment plant” and try to turn other people’s insults into something constructive and positive that you can use for your own betterment and the betterment of others. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us a story about a baby who spoke in its infancy. While the baby was suckling on its mother’s breast, a man on an expensive, magnificent horse rode by. The mother said: “O Allah! Make my son turn out to be like that man.” At that point, the baby left off his mother’s
breast, looked at the man, and said: “O Allah! Do not make me like him.” The mother carrying her child then came across a young servant girl who was being stoned by a crowd shouting out at her that she was an adulteress and a thief. The mother said: “O Allah! Do not let my son turn out like that woman.” The baby stopped suckling again and looked at the servant girl and said: “O Allah! Let me turn out like her.” The mother asked the baby why he said those things. He replied: “That man you saw was a wicked tyrant, and that servant girl who was accused of committing fornication and stealing neither committed fornication nor stole anything. That is why I asked Allah to make me like her.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) There are a lot of well-known stories about people who kept quiet in the face of accusations and insults. Some people do not feel the need to defend themselves and clear their names. One of these stories pertains to the celebrated Japanese philosopher Hakuin Ekaku. His neighbor’s teenage daughter fell pregnant, and when her enraged parents confronted her about it, she said that Hakuin was the father. News of the shameful deed spread far and wide, even overseas, and the philosophers’ reputation was ruined. However, it did not trouble him in the least, though people stopped coming to see him. When the baby was born, they brought it to him and said: “You are its father, so you have to look after it.” He took the child and cared for it. A year later, wracked by feelings of guilt, the girl admitted that the real father was the young man who worked at the shop. The girl’s parents went back to the philoso-
pher full of apologies. They said: “We have come to take back the baby.” He returned the child to them without saying a word. There is a similar story in the Muslim world, that of Jurayj the Pious. When someone criticizes you, insults you, or calls you names, do not respond. Do not try to defend yourself. Allow yourself to appear at a loss. See the positive effect that this has on you. As Allah said to Mary when she gave birth to Jesus: “And if you see any person, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and I may not speak this day to any mortal.” (Qur’an, 19:26) For a few moments, let yourself feel that your stature has diminished. Then you will feel as if something mighty inside you has
woken up and you will know that you have not diminished in the least. I have many times found myself the brunt of people’s abuses. Sometimes the arrows that were aimed at me were friendly fire. I found nothing more consoling in such situations than keeping quiet and saying to myself: “Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best one for me to trust my affairs.” It is not good for you to get into the fray when the sides are unclear, and when those who are ignorant are mixed in with those who have knowledge. When tempers settle down, that is the time to comment on the situation. Speaking when tensions are high and issues are unclear can simply confuse matters further. You might say things you do not mean and that you cannot easily retract. You are more likely to have your worlds misunderstood even if they are true. You are more likely to alienate and drive away the very people whom you are trying to convince. Also keep in mind that silence can sometimes be egotistical. This is something we need to be aware of. It can become an expression of arrogance, aloofness, and disdain for others. Do not use silence be a way to act haughtily and put other people down. Silence is a form of expression, and can be used for better or for worse, so endeavour to use it only to further goodness and truth. Courtesy: en.islamtoday.net

he Miracle has entered the sixteenth year of publication. Mr. Pirzada and his team deserve all the praise for the consistent hard work. Normal letter writing, after the advent of email has almost diminished. Similarly, with the introduction of Social media, print media too is losing its popularity. However, it wouldn’t diminish in totality and would continue to serve the needs of many for more time to come. Media plays a significant role in the fast changing environment of modern times. It informs, entertains and campaigns in a manner that affects the thought process of the people. William Bernbach said, ‘All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can help lift it onto a higher level.’ Every revolution
15 Years of The Miracle
started from a thought and changed the character of an entire society. Media can help in the promotion of positive thought process. It is imperative that the media must enjoy the freedom to perform without personal preferences and dislikes. People should be able to communicate and discuss their issues using the civilized word power. Many authors have been introduced who regularly serve the community through their thought provoking articles in the Miracle. Muslim businesses have flourished by advertising in the paper. All the different Muslim organizations regularly disseminate their events and programs through the paper. Introduction of the ‘Marriage Bureau’ through the paper has helped many to find the right spouse. The Miracle plays an instrumental role of introducing the young tal-
ent through different Qirat, Naat Khawani, Quiz and musical programs. In my opinion; the most important contribution of the Miracle remains to be- the realization of the presence of a vibrant Muslim community by all the other communities of British Columbia. The Miracle’s slogan and policy of ‘Bringing harmony to all the communities,’ richly contributed towards the positive interaction between the different communities operating within and outside the sphere of religion. The Muslim community of Canada has been recognized as a vibrant political force by all the national and provincial political parties of Canada. Victory of the Liberal party in the recent elections is a clear indication of the way Canadians thought about their political system. The Miracle, like many other Muslim publications presented the thought
of the Muslim populace. I would urge everyone to attend the 15th anniversary program of the Miracle night on 27th February. I wish the best to the entire Miracle Team, its advertisers, writers and the readers. Long live ‘The Miracle’.
Th an ks Allah (s w t )on Comp let ion of Miracle’s 15t h y ear! nce again alhamdulillah, it is a great occasion in the Miracle Media Group Inc.’s history as it has completed fourteen years -a long journey that began on Feb 23rd, 2001. I want to thank the supporters and well wishers of ‘The Miracle’ for providing continuous support through advertisements of their businesses, sharing their thoughts in writing with our readers, especially Mr. Shams Jilani, Mr. Aslam Hayat, Mr. Azhar Syed, Maulana Abdul Lateef Naumani, Mr. Mian Tariq Javaed (Toronto), Mrs. Shamim Karim,Mrs. Alam Ara, Mrs. Shabnam Khan, Dr. Huma Mir, Ms. Fatma Rabani, Ms. Beenish Jamal (Islambad, Pakistan) Mrs. Nafisa Siddiqi, Mr. Mohammad Ali Wahlah and many others. The Miracle team feels proud to have established and continued our tradition of special editions on occasions such as Federal, Provincial and Civic Elections, Independence Day of Pakistan, Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul Adha. In past few years, the Miracle conducted many successful Election Forums on Civic, Provincial and Federal Elections debates. Recently at 2015 Federal Elections the Miracle Media did a vital role to conduct Surrey Candidates grand debate under the banner of BC Muslim Print Media. We held Qirat and Hamad o Naat competitions, awards for Miracle Youth, Advertisers, Sponsors and Writers. Miracle Media also conducted three 6 hours long exciting Musical Competition programs for tributes the legendry Pakistani Singers Mehdi Hassan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mixed Pakistani songs, these programs engaged children,
O
youth, adults and seniors of all communities. This year again Miracle Media arranged a quality program of Miracle’s Writers and Musicians awards with Sham e Ghazal night to tribute the great legendry Pakistani singers, Mehdi Hassan and Noor Jehan at a lrge scale. The newspaper aims to provide a broad overview of the world through articles and images. Over the years, we have covered around 4000 events from all communities in efforts to keep up with our slogan, “Bringing Harmony to all the communities”. We are also proud that when Non-Muslims read Miracle Newspaper, they learn more about Islam as well as the local and international Muslim community. Feb 23, 2001 was a remarkable day for the BC Muslim community when Mr. Nusrat Hussain launched the first Muslim Newspaper on biweekly basis. His family’s and his day and night struggle gave a voice to the community. Mr. Nusrat Hussain, founder of Miracle, handed me over the responsibility to run this show alone from Jan 2007. Thanks Mr. Hussain! I have been since trying to nourish your baby, The Miracle, to this day, Feb 19, 2016. How successful my entire team and I have been in achieving this tasks? Well, the Miracle’s readers are the best judges. Miracle is the only one who cares and respects all community members irrespective of colour, nationality and faith. Bringing Harmony to all the Communities is the Miracle slogan.
During its fifteen years of community service in journalism, the Miracle took one step ahead from our fellows in the field, from past three year we decided to give each advertisement special attention rather than printing consecutive 4-8 pages color ads and risk that readers will flip through all the ads without stopping. We have now divided each page in such a way so that the ads and articles are spread evenly on pages so our advertisers benefit from more exposure and our readers stay informed by reading articles and seeing what the businesses are offering at the same time. We also pay thanks to our Advertisers. Feel free to comment on this issue about Miracle’s Historical 15 years journey, as your concerns and suggestions are highly appreciated for improving our quality in future. At the end I will not be honest if I do not appreciate the efforts of my Miracle’s family Khadija, Misbah, Sabeeh, Arslan, . Keep up the good work not only for the Miracle, but for all the community. I thank everyone who took the time and sent their messages at Miracle’s15th Anniversary, including politicians, advertisers and well-wishing individuals from the community. May Allah (SWT) accept your prayers for our success and may He help us in serving the community. Jazaakumu Allahu Khairan.(Ameen)

Zionists gun down 15-year-old ‘attackers’
An attacker has opened fire at an education JERUSALEM: Three Palestinian teenagers were shot and killed while attempting to attack Israeli security forces in two separate incidents in the West Bank on Sunday, the Israeli military and police said. In the first incident, the military said two Palestinians were throwing rocks at passing vehicles near the West Bank city of Jenin and when forces arrived at the scene Palestinians opened fire at them. The soldiers fired back and killed two Palestinians, the military said, adding that no soldiers were wounded in the exchange. The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the two Palestinians as Nihad Waked and Fouad Waked, both 15 years old. They were from the same extended family in the West Bank village of Al-Araka, near Jenin, but were not close relatives. Later, at a West Bank security checkpoint on the outskirts of Jerusalem, a Palestinian gripping a knife ran at Israeli paramilitary border police officers, and an officer shot and killed him, Israeli police said. No Israeli officers
were wounded. The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the Palestinian as 17-year-old Naim Safi of Abadiya village near Bethlehem. In the last five months, alleged Palestinian attacks have killed 27 Israelis. At least 160 Palestinians, the majority of whom Israel says were attackers, have been killed by Israeli fire. Israel says the ongoing violence is fueled by a campaign of incitement by Palestinian leaders that is compounded on social media sites that glorify attacks. Palestinians say it stems from frustration at nearly five decades of Israeli rule and dwindling hopes for gaining independence. Also Sunday, a watchdog group said Israel began building 1,800 new settlement homes in the West Bank in 2015. Peace Now, a dovish Israeli group that tracks settlement construction, said most of the building has taken place in isolated settlements in areas of the West Bank that Israel would likely evacuate in the event of a peace agreement with the Palestinians.Source: Arab News
An attacker has opened fire at an education department office in Saudi Arabia’s southern Jazan province, killing six employees, officials have said. Two other people have been wounded in the assault, in the remote community of Ad Dair, next to the border with Yemen. The attacker has been arrested, an official said. No motive has been given for the attack, and authorities say they are treating it as a criminal act. The suspect has not been identified but the AFP news agency, quoting Al-Ekhbariya state TV, reported that the man was not an employee but had some business at the ministry.Earlier reports suggested the attacker was a teacher. Criminal mass shootings are rare in Saudi Arabia but the country has faced recent at-

Turkey won’t let Kurds take control of Syria’s Azaz town
Turkey will not allow the Syrian border town of Azaz to fall to Syrian Kurdish fighters, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Monday, warning of a “severe response” if they advance. “We will not let Azaz fall,” Davutoglu was quoted as saying by private NTV television on his plane en route to Ukraine. “The YPG (the People’s Protection Units, a Syrian Kurdish militia) will not be able to cross to the west of the Euphrates (river) and east of Afrin,” he added. Turkey confirmed on Monday that it shelled advancing Kurdish fighters in northern Syria for a third day. Foreign ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said Ankara “retaliated in kind” when an attack from an area under YPG control targeted a border post in Turkey. “Currently YPG elements were forced out of the Azaz neighborhood. If they come closer to Azaz, they will receive the most severe response,” Davutoglu said. “The necessary intervention will be made (by Turkey) against the YPG when it is required.” Meanwhile, airstrikes on Monday destroyed a hospital in northwestern Syria supported

by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), killing at least seven people and leaving more missing, the group said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said the raids were believed to have been carried out by Russian warplanes. MSF did not assign blame for the attack, but said another eight people were missing, presumed dead, in the incident. It said the dead included five patients, a caretaker and a hospital guard, and that the missing eight were all staff members.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal Singer
I don’t have much to say about myself. I was born in Karachi in November 25, 1964.I couldn’t
get chance to get formal musical training because of getting into practical life quite earlier in my life and dedicating rest of my time to my studies and medical carrier. What ever I learned in music is by listening to good music and great singers like Talat Mehmood, Mohammad Rafi, Mehdi HASAN, Noor Jahan, Lata Msngeshkar, Kishore Kumar, and imitating their styles. After settling down to Prince George, Canada since 2007,I became friend with Sarabjit Parmar who also lives here in Prince George. He is very close friend of mine and like brother to me.He is a gifted Keyboard player and drummer and has tremendous knowledge about Indian semi classical music. He used to be a professional keyboard player and drummer in India. He had his owns musical band and also worked with many Bollywood composers like Ravinder Jain and Kalyan Ji anand Ji.He tought me a lot about ragas, sur and taal.I am still learning from him. I participated in many musical functions during my college life and were well like by the listeners. That is all I can say about myself.
Dr. Asifa Maherali Musician & Singer
Dr Asifa Maherali began her quest for music at the age of eight when she began formal raag training on the harmonium. Coming from a family with a strong passion for music, she had ample exposure where pursuing music became a an enjoyable hobby. Shahnaz Rahimtula grew up in a musical family surrounded by different forms of music. She gained interest in music after listening to. Her dad and uncle sing gazals as amateurs. Being in regular home music parties and singing at the age of 11 sparked her interest in sitar which influenced her decision as . Her first foray into learning sitar instrument itself came into being after she joined a Music school opened in honor of Jawaharlal Nehru in Hyderabad, India at the age of 12. In India Shahnaz initiated her singing practice and gazal music by learning from Vazir Ali, a wellknown local radio artist and musician in Hyderabad for a short period of a few months. After realizing her style of singing which is mostly Begum Akhtar style, Shahnaz pursued her passion when she came to Vancouver by learning from Shamshu Jamal who aided her musical development, thereby developing an affinity with her teacher who had a great impact on her. Shahnaz has sang in numer-
ous home parties and fund raisers to help promote music and serve the community. What is a Columnist?
Columnist is someone who regularly prepares brief essays and commentaries for publication. Columnists may work for broadcast media in radio and television, but they are more commonly associated with the print media, in the form of newspapers and magazines. A columnist is a type of journalist, but he or she is not required to adhere to expected journalistic ethics of neutrality, and a column does not necessarily contain news.Columnists usually write on a regular schedule, producing material for publication on a weekly, monthly, or daily basis. They appear in the same section every time they are published, usually under the same heading, such as “News and Notes” for a columnist who provides information about community events. They may write under their own names or under a pseudonym, such as “Miss Manners” for the noted etiquette columnist otherwise known as Judith Martin. Some columnists write specifically for syndication, while others work for a particular news organization, and their columns may be reprinted by permission from the organizations they work for. Originally, columnists focused primarily on humorous pieces, which might include politi-

cal satire, jokes, or other forms of humor to lighten the news and keep readers occupied and engaged. Over time, columnists began to expand their offerings, and they can be found writing on food, fashion, gossip, and lighthearted community news. A columnist may work as a critic, writing a regular column on a topic of interest such as film or art. Some columnists use letters from readers as a core part of their column. Advice columnists, for example, take requests for advice and assistance from readers, responding to them in a regular column. A columnist can also use a column as an educational forum; for example, a gardening column might include answers to questions about plant identifications from readers. Reader submissions can also be used to distribute information or coordinate community exchanges. Editorials are also commonly presented in a column format. In an editorial commentary, a columnist is generally quite opinionated, discussing an ongoing issue or news items. Editorial columnists can also write endorsements for elections, provide information for citizens who want to get involved in particular causes, or provide a forum for debate, as in the case of a publication which has two columnists of opposing views who duel over a topic in a jointly-produced column. Working as a columnist requires good writing skills and a strong work ethic, because the day to day burden of producing a column can be quite significant. Some columnists start out as journalists, while others may be asked to consider becoming a columnist because of their expertise in a field. An economist, for example, might be invited to produce a weekly column on economic issues for the readers of a newspaper.

NIA objects to bail for Samjhauta Express blast accused
By: Express News Service The criminal conspiracy to set off the blasts in Samjhauta Express by planting improvised explosive devices (IED) was hatched and executed by a group of accused persons including Chauhan. (NIA) submitted before the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the bail application of one of the Samjhauta blasts accused, Kamal Chauhan, deserved to be dismissed in view of the gravity of the offence. The bomb blasts had occurred near Dewana railway station in Panipat district of Haryana, killing 68 people, mostly from Pakistan, and injuring 12 on the night of February 18, 2007. The train was on its way from Delhi to Lahore in Pakistan. Submissions were made before the division bench headed by Justice S S Saron during the resumed hearing of Chauhan’s petition challenging the order of a special NIA court at Panchkula of February 7 denying him bail. Chauhan is at present lodged in Ambala central jail. The court was informed that during the investigation it came to light that the criminal conspiracy to set off the blasts in Samjhauta Express by planting improvised explosive devices (IED) was hatched and executed by a group of accused persons including Chauhan. NIA’s special prosecutor Sukhdeep Singh
Sandhu in his reply submitted that during the investigation, Chauhan had confessed to planting of the bombs in the train along with other co-accused, and had also pointed out various places in Indore and Delhi used for preparation of the blasts. Chauhan had submitted that he was falsely implicated in the case as his name did not figure in the FIR registered on July 29, 2010, at GRP police station, Panipat. Samjhauta Express train, which got burnt after a bomb blast near Panipat. (Rajnish Katyal/HT) According to the chargesheet, Joshi talked about targeting the Samjhauta Express, which he and Dange had already discussed. Joshi said they should anyhow stop the train because most of the travellers on the train were Pakistani Muslims. He had already done some groundwork. Joshi told them that there would be three groups, the first of white-collared people who would help motivate youths for the missions and provide shelter, the second of members who would procure raw materials for fabricating bombs, and the third of those who would fabricate bombs and plant them. Aseem Anand and Bharat Bhai were in the first group and Joshi said he would be in touch with all these groups but people in any group should not try to contact those in another.
Reconnaissance According to the chargesheet, Kamal Chauhan, along with Chaudhary, conducted a reconnaissance of Jama Masjid and Old Delhi railway station during November/December, 2006, under Sharma’s instructions. They gave feedback to Sharma that there was adequate security arrangements at Jama Masjid while there was no security available at Old Delhi railway station and therefore exploding bombs on Samjhauta Express could be easier and safer than planting a bomb at Jama Masjid.
Planting of bombs
2007, and went to a room at Sarvsampan Nagar, where the other accused Amit and Kalsangra were already present. Kalsangra delivered four suitcases, one each to Sharma, Amit, Chaudhary and Chauhan containing the IEDs, which were later planted on Samjhauta Express. Sharma, Amit, Chaudhary and Chauhan boarded the Indore Intercity Express at Indore railway station on February 17, 2007, and reached Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station on February 18, 2007, from where they took a local train and reached the Old Delhi railway station. They reached Jaipur by train after planting the bomb on Samjhauta Express and then to Indore by bus.
‘Forensic report confirms RDX’ Chaudhary had taken the NIA investigators to the forest area of Bagli village, Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, where a demonstration of bomb explosion was carried out during their training. The soil samples of the crater formed due to the blast revealed the presence of high explosive RDX. The bombs used on Samjhauta train also had RDX. But the defence wonders why Mohammad Usman’s role was not probed. Despite a suitcase containing bombs having been recovered from him, his role was not probed. The defence raises doubts as to how someone continued to sleep even after the explosions. In his statement, under Section 164 of the CrPC, he revealed that when he was asked to get down the train, he was bringing a suitcase which was heavy and opened up after it fell down and had a bomb. Usman, according to his statement, threw it outside the train. The defence also raises doubt over the sketches being made with the help of train passengers that were never followed up.

Point and counterpoint NIA prosecutor RK Handa says, “Talking about whether conviction will take place in this case is a premature thing. There is no eyewitness in this case and it is based on circumstantial evidence. Witnesses have turned hostile regarding establishing associations and conspiracy. There is other evidence which supports the case. A lot of witnesses are yet to be examined.” Defence lawyer Mukesh Garg says, “It is a totally false case. Our clients are innocent. Aseemanand was framed as he was stopping conversions among tribals. Sonia (Gandhi) and Digvijay (Singh) are behind it. It is a case of acquittal. Witnesses have told the court that they didn’t even meet NIA people.”

Being Assertive!
Youth and Parents Conflicts
By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
As we all tend to get busy with our daily lifestyles, there are definitely times when we focus very less towards our communications styles. Being assertiveness can help you control stress and anger and improve your coping skills. It also helps to recognize and learn assertive behavior and certain communication techniques. Being assertive is a core communication skill. It means that you express yourself effectively and stand up for your point of view while also respecting the rights and beliefs of others. Assertiveness can also help boost your self-esteem and earn others’ respect. It can help with stress management, especially if you tend to take on too many responsibilities because you have a hard time saying no or responding to certain situations. Some people seem to be naturally assertive, which makes their communication very clear and direct while also being conscious of others feelings. But if you’re not one of them, you can learn to be more assertive. As assertiveness is based on mutual respect, it’s an effective and diplomatic communication style. Being assertive shows that you respect yourself because you’re

willing to stand up for your interests and express your thoughts and feelings. It also demonstrates that you’re aware of the rights of others and are willing to work on resolving conflicts. Of course, it’s not just what you say — your message — but also how you say it that’s important. Assertive communication is direct and respectful. Being assertive gives you the best chance of successfully delivering your message. If you communicate in a way that’s too passive or too aggressive, your message may get lost because people are too busy reacting to your delivery!! EmailL shabnam@skcounselling.ca
We were talking about recognition and then acceptance of conflicts between parents and youth Life in todays world is very fast . It seems nobody has time for anything . we are not present in that particular moment at one given time many time it so happens that when we are talking with somebody we are half listening, somewhat paying attention, thinking about something happened earlier , partly thinking of what to do next, and such other thoughts. We are everywhere and nowhere at the time. the result is we miss actually what it is that the person is trying to convey trying to say. The parents have their own busyness , children have their own but we have to set our priorities right, What is needed to be done needs to be done. Many times family or friends are actually looking for assurance that we are aware of their feelings , we are listening to them, paying attention to them caring for them. When we listen and offer genuine support in any form we can it really helps the one in problem. This act of kindness saves lots of misunderstandings, heartache and angery response .The councellors And psychologist do this thing first

Nergis Mavalvala: The Karachiite who went on to detect Einstein’s gravitational waves
Karachi-born quantum astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala, Associate Department Head of Physics at MIT is a member of the team of scientists that announced on Thursday the scientific milestone of detecting gravitational waves, ripples in space and time hypothesised by physicist Albert Einstein a century ago. Professor Mavalvala, whose career spans 20 years, has published extensively in her field and has been working with MIT since 2002. Mavalvala did her BA at Wellesley College in Physics and Astronomy in 1990 and a Ph.D in physics in 1997 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before that, she was a postdoctoral associate and then a research scientist at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working on the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). She has been involved with LIGO since her early years in graduate school at MIT and her primary research has been in instrument development for interferometric gravitationalwave detectors. She also received the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Award in 2010.
The girl from Karachi
Born to a Parsi family in Karachi, Mavalvala received her early education from the Convent of Jesus and Mary school, an administration official from the educational institute confirmed to Dawn.com. She later moved to the United States as a teenager to attend Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she is said to have a natural gift for being comfortable in her own skin, according to an article published on the sciencemag.org website.“Even when Nergis was a freshman, she struck me as fearless, with a refreshing can-do attitude,” says Robert Berg, a professor of physics at Wellesley. “What do you know?” Weiss asked her. She began to list the classes she had taken at the institute—but the renowned experimentalist interrupted with, “What do you know how to do?” Mavalvala ticked off her practical skills and accomplishments: machining, electronic circuitry, building a laser. Weiss took her on right away. Mavalvala says that although it may not be immediately apparent, she is a
Although the discovery of gravitational waves, that opens a new window for studying the cosmos, was made in September 2015, it took scientists months to confirm their data. The researchers said they detected gravitational waves coming from two black holes - extraordinarily dense objects whose existence also was foreseen by Einstein that orbited one another, spiraled inward and smashed together. They said the waves were the product of a collision between two black holes 30 times as massive as the Sun, located 1.3 billion light years from Earth. The scientific milestone, announced at a news conference in Washington, was achieved using a pair of giant laser detectors in the United
Pakistani electrical engineer at the University of Texas at Arlington has developed a new cancer cell detection method that will be able to improve early diagnosis of cancer. Samir Iqbal, an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering Department, detailed his team’s results in a recent Nature’s Scientific Reports paper called “Effects of Nanotexture on Electrical Profiling of Single Tumor Cell and Detection of Cancer from Blood in Microfluidic Channels.” The tool works by tracking cellular behavior in real time using nanotextured walls that mimic layers of body tissue. Iqbal has worked on the project with Young-tae Kim, a UTA associate professor in the Bioengineering Department; Muhymin Islam, a STEM doctoral candidate; and engineering students Mohammad Motasim Bellah, Adeel Sajid and Mohammad Raziul
Hasan. Iqbal said his team observed the many layers of tissue in the human body and decided to develop something that would mimic that layering. “The answer was in creating a nanotextured wall that fools blood samples into thinking its actual tissue,” Iqbal said. “We used inherent properties of the cell walls to create a diagnostic tool. The cancer cells behave differently as they come into contact with the nanotextured walls. They dance,” he added. Identifying those “dancing cells” will help doctors pinpoint cancer cells and start treatment earlier than allowed with current technology. “Discovering the cancer earlier, before it metastasizes, is essential to surviving cancer,” Iqbal said. “Our device has the potential to do that.” The published results stem from a 2014 $480,000 National Science Foundation funding that sponsored the design and creation of the device. Iqbal has received
nearly $1.4 million in grants since his arrival at UTA in 2007. Those grants included an NSF CAREER grant to create a nanoelectronic microfluidic biochip to detect biomarkers. He also directs the UTA Nano-Bio Lab and is an affiliated faculty for the UTA Bioengineering Department. Iqbal also is an adjunct professor in the Department of Urology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. In addition to his numerous research accolades, Iqbal is a senior member of IEEE-USA, a member of Biomedical Engineering Society, American Physical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Biophysical Society. In 2013, Tau Beta Pi inducted him as an Eminent Engineer. Khosrow Behbehani, dean of the UTA College of Engineering, said Iqbal’s research is groundbreaking. “Dr. Iqbal and his colleagues are bringing engineering innovation to meet the challenge of

Mental health and work
An employer must make reasonable accommodation for an employee with a disability. That includes a mental disability such as depression or anxiety. It’s the law. Occupational therapist and psychotherapist Rosemary Lidstone pointed out this fact during a recent presentation at Ottawa’s Royal Ottawa Hospital. She and psychiatrist Sanjay Rao gave a lecture on mental health and work. Lidstone expanded on her point by explaining that an employer needs to make efforts to accommodate but not to such an extent that it would be unduly burdensome or costly. Adjustments might include such arrangements as shorter hours, a less demanding assignment, and time off for therapy appointments. Rao said that depression costs the Canadian economy $51 billion a year, $16 billion due to absenteeism. An unknown cost, possibly greater, is due to presenteeism, being at work when depressed and not functioning well. Since, he noted, work is an important part of life, unemployment can result in a decline in well-being and in general health. Unemployment is associated with increased risk of mental illness, suicide, and death. Even if a person gets a new job, it takes time to recover. Yet, the new job does increase quality of life. When a person suffers from depression or anxiety, work serves as part of recovery. As well, work in general helps a person to stay in good mental health. He spoke of treatment for depression, anxiety, and a need to return to work. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is his preferred therapeutic approach. It is an approach focusing on reviewing behavior to develop more flexible ways of responding to situations identified as threatening and in facing situations that are experienced as threatening. Lidstone explained the role of the occupational therapist. Occupational therapists are frequently engaged in helping people who have experienced disability, helping them to return to work. In her practice, she must identify the person’s barriers, determine their functional impact, and develop a recovery plan. Her role includes intervention, advocacy, and follow-up. Advocacy may take place in various realms, with physicians, insurers, and employers, for exam-

ple. The occupational therapist determines the perceived severity of symptoms and looks at the person’s daily functioning. Then it is necessary to see how work factors fit into this picture. There are several factors to consider in a person’s ability to return to work. Are others in the person’s life supportive of a return? Dos the person feel ready? Has the person had a positive work history? Are job conditions suitable, and is there good management support? A treatment plan could include CBT, exercise, workplace contact while off work, workplace accommodation, and social support while at work. Certain demands at work could be problematic for reintegration. Possible difficulties include the need to remember things, exposure to stimuli (noise, for example), detail work, multi-tasking, time pressures, relations with co-workers, and situations creating emotional stress. A recovery plan needs to take these into account. A recovery plan might address these barriers by accommodation. It might involve a gradual increase in responsibilities, frequent short breaks, flexibility to permit appointments with physicians and therapists, supportive management and co-workers, clear expectations, written instructions, memory aids, times for constructive feedback, and varying of tasks. Rao addressed some general issues in mental health and work. He spoke of the need to translate evidence into practice, at least in part referring to CBT. In this same context, he called for better access to quality treatment and for greater awareness of issues of work and mental health. He stressed that an improvement in general health also promotes good mental health. Rao called for early detection and mental health first aid. Where a person is off work for depression or anxiety, there should be a rapid response, with treatment plan geared to return to work or other alternatives. If services are to succeed, he said, they need to be convenient. He sees a need for collaboration among management, mental health practitioners, and general physicians. Dealing with the problem of mental health and work is, he held, cost-effective. Source: The Canadian Charger Jan 30, 2016

Syrian Refugee Assistance Program Update
As key partner to the ISSofBC, the Muslim Food Bank has been coordinating donations from the community. This has resulted in us delivering over 80 Welcome Food Baskets to newly refugee families. These food baskets are tailored to the Syrian palate but also includes basic food supplies like cooking oil, rice, pasta, sugar, tea etc. This is basically enough food to last about a week or two. One basket has been provided to each family, closest to arrival date as possible. Over the past few weeks we have also delivered more than 120 toiletries packages with essential hygiene products. This includes toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, feminine hygiene products etc. A package has been provided to each family. As so many of our new arrivals have been families with babies, our community caseworkers & social workers have been visiting these families to ensure that the mother and babies are coping with their new environments. This has also given us the opportunity to supply them with essential baby products. This included items like diapers, baby milk and baby creams. Where we have found any essential items missing, we have delivered these as soon as possible e.g. baby bottles, crib or bassinette etc. This weekend also marked the beginning of our conversational English classes. Conversation topics will include advice on daily living activities like shopping and cultural norms in Canada. These classes are meant as an introduction to English prior to the newcomers enrolling in a formal ESL program. The response from the first group has been very positive. Distribution of clothing to refugees has included a short trip to our distribution centre, where each family member gets to choose their clothing suitable to their preference. Transport is organised by the community and coordinated by our Arabic
speaking volunteers. The evenings have usually ended off with a potluck meal sponsored by the community and lots of chatting & exchanging of phone numbers! The highlight for the kids has been the welcome gift prepared by the students of from the local school. Over the past two weeks we have also seen the first families move into their permanent housing. Soon after moving in, these families were welcomed to their new homes with a larger basket of foods and essential supplies helping them settle into their new homes. Our Connect a Family Program has also taken off with great success. This program connects local families to newly arrived Syrian refugee families. It is based on principles of social support and friendship. These families have already been screened and have attended an orientation by the ASPIRE program. During the past two weeks we have already introduced & connected 10 families. The intent is to match families who permanently resides in the same city as the host family, as this is seen to be a longer term relationship program. Interpreters & Accompaniment program has involved accompanying residents to dental or medical appointments, shopping trips and other outings. We have also been working closely with Fraser Health in assisting with translation services during their clinics for vaccines administration or dental screening. As we develop and grow our various programs in support of the Syrian Refugees, we would welcome any new volunteers and donations. You can also support us by coming to our annual fundraising dinner on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Royal King Palace and Convention Centre at 365 - 8158 128th Street (Payal Centre) in Surrey. Namal College Mianwali Pakistan:Shaping Those Who Shape the Future On Feb 18th, Mrs. Aleema Khan (sister of Mr. Imran Khan) invited by Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) BC Chapter. At a short notice many community members gathered to welcome her at Madina Restaurant in Surrey. Mr Khurram Rai conducted the Forum on Namal University Mianwali. Mrs. Aleema Khan described the details of his brother Imran Khan dreams about Hospitals and Educational plans in Pakistan. She showed the slides of existing structure of Namal College and future expansion included the Knowledge City,. She said today I visited in BC to plan how to generate funds for all these noble causes structure. The basic purpose of these fund raising events is to increase the donor-base overseas and so that we can increase our yearly inflow of donations as per our growing requirements. The Namal Knowledge City in Mianwali Pakistan, is an ambitious project of Mr. Imran Khan and we will be considerably expanding Namal College’s services for delivering academic excellence. New buildings and facilities will be established. Constructing this city will demand enormous financial resources for which we intends to initiate “100 City Project”. The idea of 100 City Project is to conduct fundraising events in 100 cities around the globe. This will be an ongoing activity and is intended to raise funds primarily for the Namal Knowledge City which would be a centre of academic excellence in rural Pakistan. All those who contribute will be become Members of Namal Knowledge City (NKC). At the end Dr Muhammad Tariq Consul General of Pakistan thanked the community. About Namal Collge: Higher education has the most profound impact on individual success. It is a gift that turns students into professionals, and youngsters into income earning citizens. At Namal College, higher education is literally a gift as 90% of the undergraduates of Namal are provided financial assistance.Mr. Imran Khan (ExCaptain of Pakistan Cricket Team) established Namal College in the year 2008, in the district of Mianwali, when he was awarded the Chancellorship of the University of Bradford (UoB) in UK. Since then Mr. Imran dreams of developing the area into a knowledge city similar to Oxford University (his alma mater).
Now, the vision behind Namal College is to trigger innovation for the benefit of the society, by establishing high quality education facilities of international standard with the help of local and international partners. The founding members of highly reputed institutions such as Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) in Pakistan have come together to take on this ambitious challenge of setting the largest knowledge city of Pakistan. The sponsoring body, Namal Education Foundation (NEF) currently owns 1,000 acres of land in Mianwali where new blocks and facilities will be established in the coming years. Namal College is an associate college of University of Bradford, UK (UoB), where UoB is providing complete academic leadership for this institution. Students from over 56 different cities of Pakistan are benefitting from this unique opportunity in District of Mianwali. There are currently 300 students enrolled in four batches, studying for a University of Bradford degree. These students are being provided education at ten times lower cost (Rs. 1.2 million for complete program) compared to what they would have paid (Rs. 10 million for complete program), had they decided to study at Bradford in the UK. Furthermore 90% of the students studying with us are provided full or partial scholarships. Accreditation from University of Bradford (UoB), UK.Namal College, Mianwali has the honor of being the only college in Pakistan to offer a foreign degree. It is an associate college of University of Bradford and therefore each graduating student receives the same degree that a U.o.B. graduate would receive. While the same degree from the UK could cost the student in Pakistani rupees around Rs. 10,000,000 the same can be had from Namal College for Rs. 1,000,000.

Young people and social media: Docs examine pitfalls
By Pat Etheridge
They’re called “Generation M2”: highly tech-savvy children ages 8 to 18, whose lives are immersed in electronic media. Now, the nation’s top pediatric organization is mobilizing efforts around their wellbeing. “As pediatricians who are trying to help children behave in ways that keep them healthy and safe, we have to pay a lot of attention to what’s happening in social media,” said Dr. David Hill, chairman-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ council on communications and media. The council led a panel called “Social Media: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” at the group’s annual conference last month in New Orleans. The goal of the presentation: getting pediatricians current on issues to discuss with young patients during regular wellness checkups. The American Academy of Pediatrics established the council in 2007 with the recognition that growing media platforms touch on virtually every health concern pediatricians have about young people: aggression, sex, drugs, obesity, self-image and eating disorders, depression and suicide -- even learning disorders and academic achievement. “This is an uncontrolled experiment we’re running right now,” Hill said. “How does the human organism -- particularly the developing brain -- adapt to this kind of input? These are questions we are tackling.” The average teenager sends an astonishing 3,400 texts a month: more than 100 a day, according to estimates from a 2010 Neilsen survey. Many learn the hard way that once they hit “send,” there is no such thing as an “erase” button. Generation M2 youth spend close to eight hours daily in front of various electronic screens -- more time than sleeping, school
or any other activity, say statistics from the Kaiser Family Foundation. The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to monitor their children closely early on. “In early adolescence, it’s fair to say at any given moment, ‘I can look at your computer; I can look at your phone,’ “ Hill said. Recently, I had to make a tough call as a mother: I insisted that my 14-year-old daughter temporarily shut down her Facebook account. It happened just a few weeks into the new school year. A series off stressful social media interactions erupted in an exceptionally closeknit class. There were inappropriate posts, thought to be private. Not so; students suddenly were caught up in hurtful chats they would soon regret. Her school, the Atlanta International School, was proactive in its response, counseling students and offering a series of digital information sessions for parents. “Our guidance is to apply the Golden Rule. If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, forget about sending it via text, Skype or Facebook,” said Jeff Holcomb, head of the upper school at Atlanta International. What surprised me most when I had to play “bad cop” was that my daughter seemed re-
lieved, possibly because I told her she could blame me. “That points out one of the key tools to parenting a teenager. It’s refreshing how often teenagers will say, ‘You know what, I didn’t know how to get out of it and save face,’ “ said Hill, also the author of “Dad to Dad: Parenting Like a Pro.” “Teens actually want and need limits on their behavior. They need to know you are dedicated to keeping them safe and looking out for them.” That helps Tha chart the cha course for cou older teenagold ers who inevitably balk evit parental at oversight. When the time Wh comes to step com back, keep bbac open lines of ope communicacom tion and emphasize the pha positives of pos technology use. “Sit down and watch their favorite show; have them show you the websites they are interested in. You might be surprised at how much your teen welcomes your attention -and how much you’ll learn about what’s going on in your child’s brain by sharing some of that time,” Hill advised. The secret life of my sixth-grader Being a good digital role model is a part of being a good parent. But all too often, it is the grownups making the missteps. “If you text or check your e-mail while driving, if you bring your cell phone to the
dinner table or leave the TV on in the background, you are not demonstrating the sorts of behaviors that you would want your children to display,” Hill said. Pediatricians also counsel parents to watch for teachable moments in the headlines. “I think this is a great opportunity with your teen to say, ‘Be cautious about what you put online, in an e-mail or a text. There is the possibility that it will live forever -- and be passed much farther than you had hoped,’ “ offered Hill. A growing number of college recruiters review young applicants’ Facebook pages as part of a highly selective admissions process. Otherwise well-qualified students sometimes are rejected for reckless posts on sex or substance abuse. While applicants might bristle at the prospect, university officials do not view the checks as an invasion of privacy. “If I post anything inappropriate, borderline or even just having fun, that could potentially put me in a position where I might not be admitted,” said Atlanta International high school senior Olivia Soultz, who is applying to more than a dozen colleges. “Ten years ago, you couldn’t look at a student’s Facebook page and know what they look like or how they spend their time outside of school.” “Here’s what I tell my teenage daughters about privacy,” remarked Hill: “Quoting a line from the movie ‘Princess Bride,’ ‘I don’t think that word means what you think it means.’ “ About six weeks after going digitally dark, my daughter quietly reactivated her Facebook account with newfound self-restraint. She has discovered on her own that discretion is the better part of valor. Source: CNN
28 SPORTS Zika virus: Pregnant women advised to stay away from Rio 2016 Olympics Jamadi al Awaal 10, 1437 February 19, 2016
Women who think they may be pregnant in the weeks before travelling to the Olympics in Brazil later this year should consider abandoning their trip because of the risks posed by the Zika virus to their unborn child, a senior scientist has warned. An epidemic in Brazil of a congenital birth defect known as microcephaly, when the brain of the foetus fails to grow normally, is probably linked to the recent introduction and widespread transmission of the mosquitoborne Zika virus, said Laura Rodrigues, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “It is an unprecedented epidemic of microcephaly,” Professor Rodrigues said. “It has never happened before and it was probably caused by congenital infections of Zika virus, caused by pregnant women getting infected and the virus going to the baby’s brain.” It is not known how the Zika virus might cause microcephaly in the womb but it is likely to result from an infection of the developing foetal brain in
the first three months, and possibly first few weeks, of pregnancy, said Professor Rodrigues, who is investigating the outbreak in Brazil. “The real risk is for women who are pregnant going to areas where there is Zika transmission. The infection itself is very mild, but for pregnant women to be infected can lead to complications. “My advice is to check whether there is still Zika [in Brazil] during the Olympics,” Professor Rodrigues added. “I think it is sensible for women who are either pregnant or maybe pregnant, or planning to be pregnant, to consider very carefully whether they want to go to a place where there is Zika virus and run the risk. “It is a sensible question, and if a woman thinks she may be pregnant then they should consider the risks.” And Professor Rodrigues warned: “We also don’t know how long after infection the risk to pregnancy lasts, so it is not impossible for someone who is infected now and then conceives a week later might still have virus there.” Zika virus is transmitted by mosquito bites and is be-
lieved to have first crossed the “species barrier” from wild animals to humans in East Africa. It has since spread to West Africa and then to Asia and the Polynesian Islands of the Pacific Ocean, arriving in Chile in 2014 and Brazil in 2015. The World Health Organisation predicts the virus will continue to spread to much of South and Central America, where mosquito-borne transmis-
sion of the related dengue virus has already been documented. Retrospective tests on pregnant women in French Polynesia who had early terminations showed that many of the aborted foetuses had suffered from microcephaly during 2013-14, when the islands were suffering from outbreaks of Zika virus, Professor Rodrigues said. PSL will shape future of Pakistan cricket: Chris Gayle
West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, who is representing Lahore Qalandars in the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL), believes the event will help Pakistan cricket in the future. “Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) efforts to stage the league have brought smiles and all the parties look satisfied so far,” said Gayle. “This is a wonderful tournament and everybody is enjoying here in Dubai and Sharjah. We have seen some top performances and young Pakistani talent is amazing. They are enthusiastic and eager to learn from big names in the game. The PSL will go a long way in shaping the future of Pakistan cricket.” While talking about his own performance in the event, Gayle said he is waiting for a change of fortune. “I know people come to watch me hitting sixes and fours, and I always try to do that. But sometimes things don’t go your way. That is why it is called cricket,” said the 36-yearold. “Despite my failure with the bat, it was a wonderful victory against one of the top teams
– Peshawar Zalmi – captained by my best friend Boom Boom Afridi.” The left-hand batsman expressed hope that a big innings is just round the corner. “I hope things can change after this match and people will see some fireworks. You need time to gel with new players and I hope my big innings is round the corner,” he said. Moreover, Gayle said he felt for the cricket fans in Pakistan who were not able to enjoy international cricket at home. “I can sympathise with cricket-hungry people of Pakistan for lack of international cricket in their country,” he said. “I hope the PSL will be staged in Pakistan in near future. It was heartening to see people thronging the historic Sharjah Stadium. It shows the popularity of the game in this region.” While talking about his injury, Gayle said: “I have got some niggles but it is not a serious injury. I hope to be fully fit soon. I am surviving this and playing cricket.” Source: The Tribune
