Islam, the Most Misunderstood Religion

Growing anti Muslim hatred continues to be a matter of grave concern for the vulnerable Muslim community all across the globe in general but in the West in particular where Islamophobia keeps on rising. Eyebrows are raised, as the biased media reporting remains highly unprofessional as all ethics are ignored. The partial media is only to blame for misinformation to the audience. Strategically, the illegitimate business of the organized terrorism has been booming as the robot-like terrorists are more than willing to follow as programmed/ordered. In their non-stop mode, these killing machines tend to stay engaged to keep defaming Islam through their fake practice and love of Islam. That indicates extremism is one issue while the use of extremists by the stake holders for the ulterior purposes is the bigger threat as it endangers the embattled religion. Avoidance by the broadcast and the print media (main stream) to defuse the nasty crisis is shameful. It amounts to offering a free ride to those who are assigned to sowing anti-Muslim seeds of hatred. If not discouraged now, the image of Islam will continue to deteriorate beyond easy fix. Despite the debates on the issue of extremism, there is also a painful divide among Muslims regarding

coexistence leading to a wide gap between pro-Islam and anti-Islam elements/groups. The fact is “teachings” of Islam make sense as they are absolutely free from superstitions and irrational beliefs. Most importantly, that is where we are able to learn about (a) Oneness of God (Tauheed), (b) the prophet-hood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final messenger of God Almighty, and(c) the concept of life after death--all are the basic articles of its faith. They are based on reason and sound logic. Beyond doubt, all of the teachings of Islam flow from those basic beliefs and are simple and straightforward. Everybody may approach the Qur’an directly and translate its dictates into practice. Islam awakens in man the faculty of reason and exhorts him to use his intellect. It enjoins him to see things in the light of reality. The Qur’an advises him to seek knowledge and invoke God to expand his awareness: “Say ‘O, my Lord! Advance me in knowledge’.” (Qur’an, 20: 114) Again, Islam is a practical religion and does not allow indulgence in empty and futile theorizing. It says faith is not a mere profession of beliefs, but rather that it is the very mainspring of life. Righteous conduct must follow belief in God. Religion is something to be prac-

ticed and not an object of mere lip service. The Qur’an says: “Those who believe and act righteously, joy is for them, and a blissful home to return to.” (Qur’an, 13: 29) The Prophet is also reported to have said: “God does not accept belief if it is not expressed in deeds, and does not accept deeds if they do not conform to belief.” (At-Tabarani) Religion of moderation: Islam provides guidance for all aspects of life – individual and social, material and moral, economic and political, legal and cultural, and national and international. Its teachings are solely for moderation through purifying the believers’ soul; this leads to a quality life where supremacy of right over might and of virtue over vice stands established. Thus, Islam stands for the middle path and the goal of producing a “moral humanbeing” for serving the entire Humanity. The Qur’an enjoins man to embrace Islam without any reservation and to follow God’s guidance in all areas of life. In other words, Islam clearly states that its objectives are the purification of the soul and the reform and reconstruction of society. As we read in the Qur’an: “We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that

mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that God may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! God is Strong, Almighty.” (Qur’an, 57: 25) Summing up: Islam strongly condemns terrorism in all forms; teachings of Islam reject the playground for the forces of evil everywhere as well. It’s about time to begin the noble work of reinstating the Muslim reputation. Muslim-friendly non Muslims are required to contribute positively. Efforts will have to be made to raise the needed awareness regarding the importance of coexistence and respect for different cultures and cooperating to end extremism. This is how, the focus is likely to shift towards spreading the true image of Islam known for the tolerant ideology, diverse cultures, architecture, arts and sciences. Canadians from coast to coast voted against the nasty politics of the Harper era. Re-instating the actual image of Islam will be a step forward for a positive change. This is called democracy. Let’s hope our new leader will go for unity among the Canadian communities rather than division. Sources:

A ceasefire in Syria is pure fantasy By Luke Coffey Monday’s announcement by the United States and Russia of a socalled “cessation of hostilities” in Syria is the second such proposal in as many weeks. The first proposal for a cessation of hostilities ended last week before it even began. But if all goes to plan, the fighting in Syria will stop, or at least be drastically reduced, starting on midnight Saturday, February 27. Do not hold your breath. How the cessation of hostilities will work in practice, and how it will turn into a more permanent ceasefire in war-torn Syria, remains to be seen. Who is a terrorist? The so-called International Syria Support Group (ISSG), a group of international countries and organisations hoping to bring a resolution to the civil war, has been given the task of finding a consensus on what constitutes a terrorist group in Syria. However, beyond identifying ISIL and al-Nusra Front as terrorist organisations, there is little consensus among the ISSG. This lack of consensus on which groups fighting in Syria are terrorist organisations will be the loophole that allows Russia to continue its support for Assad’s military offensive in places around Aleppo. It will also be the loophole that will allow Turkey to continue shelling the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG. Perhaps the YPG is the best example of how chaotic the situation on the ground has

become in Syria. The YPG is the armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish group the Democratic Union Party or the PYD. The YPG is simultaneously: fighting and making gains against ISIL and other rebel groups in Syria, being attacked by US-ally and Russian-adversary Turkey, fighting Russian-backed Syrian forces, and is being armed by both the US and the Russians. Not confusing enough? In the case of the YPG, the US and Russia are essentially fighting proxy wars against themselves. It would be farcical if the situation wasn’t so serious. No credibility As if the impasse over agreeing over the terrorist list were not bad enough, perhaps the single biggest limiting factor for an enduring cessation of hostilities in Syria is the fact that the two external power brokers, the US and Russia, have neither credibility nor clout in the region. US influence in the Middle East is at its lowest point in decades. Look at the way US President Barack Obama handled the drawdown from Iraq in 2010, Washington’s relations with Israel, and the flawed Iran deal which left America’s Gulf allies out to dry. The sum of these policy decisions has left US commitment open to question and US influence diminished across the region.Russia, on the other hand, has zero credibility at implementing past ceasefires. Almost seven years later Moscow is still in direct violation of the six-

point ceasefire plan that ended its five-day invasion of the Republic of Georgia. The so-called Minsk II ceasefire agreement in eastern Ukraine is violated every day by Russianbacked separatists. Moscow regularly eggs on both Azerbaijan and Armenia over the latter’s occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh by selling both sides in the conflict billions of dollars’ worth of weaponry. When it comes to supporting ceasefires, Russia has a dismal record. Why would Syria be any different? Pure fantasy The idea that a cessation of hostilities in Syria can be enforced is pure fantasy. There is no political will for an international peacekeeping force. There is not even consensus on something as basic who is a terrorist and who us not. Turkey will continue striking the YPG. Russia will continue striking the many Salafist Sunni groups fighting against the Assad regime. The US and Europe will continue pretending there is a cozy moderate third option to support between Assad on the one hand and groups such as ISIL on the other. The brutal truth is that the civil war has been left to rot and fester for so long that there is very little the US or even Russia can do to engineer a cessation of hostilities, much less a full-blown ceasefire, armistice or peaceful outcome. Last-minute push

A year ago, during the so-called Mink II ceasefire negotiations, a battle was raging over control of a Ukrainian city and strategic railroad junction called Debaltseve. A ceasefire was finally agreed for February 15 - but the Russianbacked separatists had unfinished business in Debaltseve and continued fighting until they captured the city on the 18th. The upcoming cessation of hostilities in Syria will be no different. Between now and February 27, Russian-backed Syrian forces will make a last-minute push on Aleppo. If Syrian forces cannot mop up the defenders of Aleppo (many of whom, by the way, are far from being the “moderates” talked about so much in the Western media) by this Saturday, then Moscow will use its “terrorist loophole” to continue the air strikes. The proposed cessation of hostilities is not worth the paper it’s written on. Sadly for the innocent civilians caught in the fighting, the killing is likely to continue. Few clauses of KP Domestic Violence Bill in contradiction with Shariah: CII chief ISLAMABAD: The chairman of Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), Maulana Muhammad Khan Sheerani, said that some clauses of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Domestic Violence Bill are in contradiction with Shariah and the country’s Constitution. Talking to media in the federal capital on Wednesday, Sherani said that CII is holding discussion over the bill and some clauses of it are under consideration for being in contradiction with the law of the land and also Shariah. Sherani said that the CII’s formation and authority is protected under the Constitution and if any assembly, whether provincial or national, moves to dissolve the council then that act will be considered against the Constitution of Pakistan. “Tell me whether that assembly should be lauded or dissolved for acting against the Constitution,” Sherani asked the media. The KP government had sent the Domestic Violence Bill to CII to seek its advice, as it believes that the matter involves interpretation of Islamic injunctions. On February 8, province’s law Secretary Mohammad Arifeen told Dawn that Domestic Violence Bill had been pending for the last two months with CII where it was sent for interpretation. Macedonia hits refugees 25,000 Syrian refugees have with tear gas, stun grenades landed, now for Phase 2, says John McCallum

Police in Macedonia have fired tear gas and stun grenades after hundreds of frustrated Iraqi and Syrian refugees tried to force their way through a razor-wire barrier across the border into the southeastern European country from Greece. Tensions flared on Monday, with thousands of desperate refugees stuck for days on the Greek side of the border, overflowing from a packed refugee camp at Idomeni. “The situation is very hectic; people just want a safe passage,” Vicky Markolefa, of the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) aid organisation, told Al Jazeera from Idomeni. “We denounce violence against innocent refugees.” MSF treated many refugees for respiratory problems after they had tear gas fired on them, she said. Women and children were among those caught up in the crowds. Markolefa said people were forming 400-metre long lines just for food. “We are overwhelmed. NGOs [non-governmental organisations] are doing their best to respond, but we are calling for European governments to act now.” MSF said on Twitter that it had treated one patient suffering from tear-gas injuries who was just six weeks old. Al Jazeera’s Hoda Abdel-Hamid, reporting from Idomeni, said a rumour that the border crossing with Macedonia was opening brought hundreds to the razor-wire barrier. “There was a state of panic and hope that finally those gates towards Western Europe would open. It’s an emotional rollercoaster for these refugees and migrants who are here,” she said. About 50 refugees were allowed into Macedonia on Monday. “The refugees are saying, ‘What we’ve seen here is going to divide opinion in Europe’,” our correspondent said. “It’s a completely different atmosphere at the moment from last year and they are aware of it. People are saying, ‘This is not going to help us. They will see this and we will not be welcome’.” Nearly 8,000 refugees are in limbo at the Idomeni border camp which has a capacity of 2,000, according to Greek officials. Many are spread out into the surrounding fields as they wait for Macedonian authorities to let them continue their trek through the Balkans. Only a tiny trickle of people from specific countries have been allowed to cross every day. Later in the day, Macedonia sent special police reinforcements by helicopter to its border with Greece. More than one million refugees and migrants have passed through the camp in the previous 12 months, travelling from Turkey to Germany and other Western European countries, where they hoped to secure asylum. Elsewhere on the continent, French authorities began dismantling on Monday part of a refugee camp known as the “jungle” near Calais,

after an expulsion order issued by the local administration was upheld last week by a judge. Workers in bright construction vests and helmets took down tarps and sheets of material that had been cobbled together to create shelters at the camp, which was home to those seeking a future in nearby Britain. Scores of riot police stood guard, keeping journalists and volunteers out as helmeted workers tackled the shelters one by one. Fabienne Buccio, a police prefect who had ordered the camp evacuated and dismantled earlier this month, showed up as the operation began. Her office decried “intimidation” tactics by some activists who she said were manipulating migrants into refusing to accept government offers of shelter. “Really three houses out of four - I mean three huts out of four, or three tents out of four - were already totally abandoned with a lot of garbage inside,” she said. Migrants, she said, “had the time necessary to gather their belongings. The rest was good enough to throw away.” After first sending welcoming messages, European authorities are now struggling to handle the situation. Hungary has fenced off its borders, refusing to accept any migrants, and other Eastern European countries say they will not take in anyone under an EU refugee-sharing deal. In recent weeks Austria - at the north end of the Balkan corridor - has severely restricted the inflow of refugees, causing a domino effect through the Balkans. Many of those countries are now refusing to let Afghan refugees in, although UN authorities say no one has explained to them who made this decision or why. Diplomatic tensions are rising too, with criticism mounting against Austria. Greece has threatened to block decisions at an upcoming EU-Turkey summit unless the bloc forces members to shoulder more of the refugee burden. For her part, German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued on Sunday another robust defence of her quest for a European solution to the crisis. She is resisting calls at home and elsewhere in Europe for limits on refugees as such as those imposed by Austria. “We can’t do this in such a way that we simply abandon Greece,” she said on ARD television. “This is exactly what I fear: When one country defines its limit, another must suffer. That is not my Europe.” At next Monday’s summit, EU leaders “will discuss how we can restore the [passportfree] Schengen system step by step with Greece,” Merkel said. However, Reinhold Mitterlehner, Austria’s deputy chancellor, said on Monday the refugee restrictions “are necessary [and] we’re going to maintain them”. Source: Al Jazeera

Immigration Minister John McCallum offers praise and congratulations to everyone inside Canada and out who helped the federal government bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees, but warns there is much more to be done. “We are not having a massive celebration about this, because it’s only a victory for Phase 1,” McCallum told reporters gathered at Toronto Pearson International Airport today. The effort now will shift to Phase 2: helping settled refugees find permanent living arrangements, jobs and to get them enrolled into language training for either French or English. The government has managed to bring the 25,000 Syrian refugees into Canada “at a cost of a little over $700 million, and I can tell you we are under the budget that we set,” McCallum said. “We did not spend the reserves that we had established.” The minister did say, however, that the federal government would likely need additional funds to pay for the costs of language training, because many of the new arrivals do not speak French or English. This past weekend the government reached the 25,000 figure for settled refugees from Syria. That number included both government-sponsored and privately sponsored refugees. As of Feb. 27, private sponsors had brought in 8,527 Syrian refugees since the Liberals came to office. In order to meet the Liberal government’s campaign promise of bringing in 25,000 governmentsponsored refugees, McCallum said, the federal government will have to settle another 10,000 Syrian refugees, plus some additional private refugees, before the end of the year. McCallum said he would make an announcement in the next 10 days in Parliament to update the country on the exact number of refugees that Canadians can expect to see arrive before the end of 2016. The minister also took the opportunity to laud Canada for

its efforts to welcome so many Syrian refugees at a time when they were being turned away from many other countries. “We were going in the opposite direction from many countries,” he said. “Many countries from around the world today are making it more difficult for refugees to come,, and they are setting up more barriers, and we are among the few countries who are saying, ‘No, come on in, we want to welcome 25,000 quickly.’” “It’s important that we’re sending a message to the world, it’s important that we’re helping 25,000 people from desperate conditions have a happy and productive life in Canada,” he said. McCallum told reporters that since he has become the immigration minister, his No. 1 focus has been to meet his party’s election promise on the Syrian refugees, but now that priority would change to processing times for people already in the immigration system. The minister said it was unacceptable that the average wait time for a husband and wife to be reunited was two years, and in some cases longer, and now that the refugee file was winding down he would make streamlining his department a new top priority. “I will be undertaking a very major effort to improve the efficiency with which my department processes people to remove unnecessary steps,” McCallum said. “I am ashamed that we, a country who view ourselves as being open to newcomers, should take two years to bring together husband and wife and even longer to bring in parents and grandparents.” The minister said his government learned a lot about how to be efficient through the Syrian refugee experience and is confident he can improve his department’s waiting lists by applying the lessons learned there across his department. Justin Trudeau said..... Cont from Page 1 Canada’s new pot-friendly prime minister has signaled police should continue to arrest people for marijuana possession despite Ottawa having already taken its first steps towards legalizing the drug. “The laws haven’t changed yet,” Justin Trudeau said during an interview with News 1130 this morning (March 1). “Pot is still illegal in this country and will be until we bring in a strong regulatory framework.” News 1130’s Reaon Ford subsequently asked what Trudeau would say to a teenager stuck for life with a marijuana charge on their record, and whether marijuana could be decriminalized on an interim basis, until a regulatory framework allows for full legalization. “I think decriminalization is a bad idea because it doesn’t do anything to make it more difficult for young people to access it and it doesn’t do anything in terms of keeping the black market and the criminal organizations from profiting from it,” Trudeau replied. “That’s why I believe in control and regulation that actually will do the protection of public safety and of minors that we need. And in the meantime, it’s still illegal.” In the run up to the October 2015 election, the Straight published a three-part series that explored the differences between Trudeau’s plan to legalize recreational marijuana and the competing NDP’s plan to stop short of legalization and only decriminalize the drug. That series presented criticisms of the NDP’s plan, explaining that only decriminalizing marijuana would leave the supply side of the market in the hands of organized crime. Alternately, it suggested that while fully legalizing marijuana would be a more complicated process, it was preferred to decriminalization because it would see the supply of marijuana regulated and taxed by the government. Every independent advocate for marijuana reform quoted

in that series told the Straight they favoured legalization over decriminalization. However, several suggested that decriminalization could happen on an interim basis, as the legalization process could take several years to complete. More recently, one of Canada’s leading activists for marijuana reform called for Ottawa to immediately place a moratorium on arrests related to the possession of cannabis. “As the government moves to legalizing marijuana, it is unjust to continue arresting people,” Jodie Emery told the Straight in January. Trudeau’s March 1 comments echo remarks made on February 24 by Bill Blair, parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice and former Toronto police chief. “The laws that currently exist in this country are in force and in effect and it’s important that those laws continue to be obeyed, upheld, and enforced,” Blair said at a forum on marijuana legalization. On the campaign trail in August 2015, the Straight asked Trudeau if a Liberal government’s plans for marijuana reform would include releasing people from prison. “That’s something that we’ll be looking into as we move forward,” Trudeau said in response. “There has been many situations over history when laws come in that overturn previous convictions and there will be a process for that that we will set up in a responsible way.” On February 26, Buzzfeed Canada reported Blair had said Ottawa was not considering granting pardons. “That is not currently under discussion,” Blair was quoted as saying. “It is not being contemplated at this time.” The Buzzfeed article does not specify if that means pardons for past marijuana offences have been ruled out or if amnesty remains an option the federal government could consider in the future. Surrey, B.C. Named One of World’s Top 7 Intelligent Communities

A Metro Vancouver city that is constantly battling an image problem received an ego boost this week when it was named one of the world’s most intelligent communities. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), a New York-based economic and social development think tank, released its “Top7 Intelligent Communities of 2015” list Thursday, and Surrey, B.C. made the cut. “Surrey is a city in transition from a suburban past to a sustainable urban future,” states ICF’s profile of the city. “On this road, it seeks to leave behind a reputation for sprawl, crime and limited economic potential.” The organization cites Surrey’s “smart-city systems,” such as the My Surrey App, as well as its Innovation Boulevard project, “where the city, universities and business are building clusters in health technology, clean tech and advanced manufacturing,” as some of the reasons for its high praise. Each year the awards program centres around a theme on which to gauge the applicants, and 2015’s is “The Revolutionary Community.” Finalists, which werewhittled down to 21 in October 2014, are chosen by a group of academic analysts. Surrey is joined in the top seven by Arlington County, Va., Columbus in Ohio,

Ipswich, Australia, Mitchell, S.D., New Taipei City, Taiwan, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Each is now vying for the title of Intelligent Community of the Year, which will be announced at the ICF Summit in Toronto in June. But even being a finalist is a welcome accolade for Surrey, a city that was most recently in the news thanks to an unflattering Facebook group. Despite that, Surrey is working hard to change its reputation and is slowly growing into a sought-after place for real estate and business. In May 2014 it was named the best B.C. city to invest in by the Real Estate Investment Network, and a recent luxury condo complex by WestStone Group has prices starting at an unbelievably low $93,900. And who could forget Surrey’s number one fan, Amrit Bains? The local resident wrote a song and shot a corresponding music video to share his city pride. The United States has warned its citizens to be ready to leave Iraq in the event of what it has said could be a catastrophic collapse of the country’s largest hydro-electric dam near Mosul. Iraqi officials have sought to play down the risk but Washington urged its citizens to make contingency plans now. A US security message cited estimates that Mosul, which is northern Iraq’s largest city and under control of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters, could be inundated by as much as 21 metres of water within hours of the breach. Cities downstream on the Tigris River such as Tikrit, Samarra and the Iraqi capital Baghdad could be inundated with smaller, but still significant levels within 24-72 hours. “We have no spe-

cific information that indicates when a breach might occur, but out of an abundance of caution, we would like to underscore that prompt evacuation offers the most effective tool to save lives of the hundreds of thousands of people,” the security message said. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday precautions were being taken, but described the likelihood of such a scenario as “extremely small”. ISIL seized the dam in August 2014, raising fears they might blow it up and unleash a wall of water on Mosul and Baghdad that could kill hundreds of thousands. The dam was recaptured two weeks later by Iraqi government forces backed by air strikes from a US-led coalition, but the disruption of maintenance operations has in-

Senators urge new sugar tax, ad ban to combat obesity in Canada

A Senate committee is calling for a national campaign to combat obesity, including a possible new tax on sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages, and a ban on food advertising that targets children. The recommendations are made in a new report on the “alarming obesity rates in Canada,” released Tuesday by the Senate’s standing committee on social affairs, science and technology. Committee chair Kelvin Ogilvie, a Conservative, and deputy chair Art Eggleton, a Liberal, released the report at a news conference in Ottawa on Tuesday. “We can’t sugar-coat it any longer. There is an obesity crisis in Canada and sugar is a big part of that problem. We must act,” Mr. Ogilvie said. The report recommends that the federal government consider a so-called sugar tax, a proposal welcomed by the Canadian Diabetes Association. “We need that tax because of the direct link between sugary drinks and the risk of Type 2 diabetes,” Jan Hux, the association’s chief science officer, told The Globe and Mail. “They can be removed from the diet in most cases with no loss of nutrition.” A number of jurisdictions have brought in a sugar tax or similar ban, to varying degrees of success. In Mexico, a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages succeeded in bringing down sales by 12 per cent, but a recent study by the British Medical Journal estimates that only 4.7 calories were removed from an average diet of 3,025 calories a day as a result of the measure. In 2012, thenNew York City mayor Michael Bloomberg banned the sale of jumbo sugary beverages. The ban was eventually rejected by the state’s highest court in 2014, after beverage companies sued the city. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation urged the federal government to reject calls for a sugar tax. “The only thing a sugar tax will make thinner are Canadians’ wallets,” Aaron Wudrick, the organization’s federal director, said in a statement Tuesday. “Good intentions do not always translate into good policy, and the record of these types of taxes in other jurisdictions leaves much to be desired.” The Canadian Beverage Association said the tax unfairly targets the industry, which employs 60,000 people across the country. “Singling out one product line that contributes 5 per cent of Canadians’ calories to their diet … is not going to bend the curve on obesity,” association president Jim Goetz said. The

report also recommended a ban on food and beverage advertising to children, based on an assessment of the existing model in Quebec. “Children are inundated with food and beverage marketing,” Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada CEO David Sculthorpe said. “At the same time, these messages are drowning out healthy messages that governments and health organizations are trying to communicate.” The study called on Health Minister Jane Philpott to revise the Canada Food Guide with the help of an advisory body, which it argued should not include members of the food or agriculture industries. It also recommended that federal government infrastructure funding encourage an active lifestyle, such as the inclusion of sidewalks in new housing developments. The report made a number of key findings as well. Since 1980, the number of obese Canadian adults has doubled. Today, two-thirds of Canadian adults and 33 per cent of children are either overweight or obese, according to the findings. The study also found an obesity problem among the indigenous population, noting that 70 per cent of aboriginal adults and 62.5 per cent of aboriginal children under 11 years old are either overweight or obese. The report calls on the government to improve the Nutrition North food subsidy program, which has been criticized for operational problems, and improve affordability and availability of healthy food options in aboriginal communities. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Canada ranks fifth among countries where obesity is prevalent in adults, behind the U.S., Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. The committee found that the estimated direct and indirect health-care costs due to the loss of productivity stemming from Canadians’ obesity range from $4.6-billion to $7.1-billion a year. Mr. Eggleton urged Dr. Philpott to move “as quickly as possible” on the report’s recommendations. In a statement, the Health Minister welcomed Tuesday’s report, acknowledging the obesity problem. “I look forward to reviewing all of the recommendations of this report in depth in the coming days and working with my provincial and territorial colleagues and stakeholders across the country as we work to tackle this national obesity issue.” Source: Globe and Mail

creased the likelihood of a breach. An Italian company has been awarded a contract to make urgent repairs to the dam, which has suffered from structural flaws since its construction in the 1980s and requires constant grouting to maintain structural integrity. Hussein Hamad, the chief engineer of the Mosul dam maintenance department, told Al Jazeera last month the dam is not 100 percent secure . “During the 1980s, foreign companies used to maintain the dam through drilling and

[by] reinforcing the dam. That process was handed over to us afterwards,” Hamad said. “We are given cement and a number of excavators, but we need spare parts for the machines we are using for the ongoing maintenance process.” Iraq’s minister of water resources said earlier this month there was only a “one in a thousand” chance the dam would collapse, and that the solution was to build a new dam or install a deep concrete support wall. How To Make the Prophets Real for Small Children By: B y: Su Sum S Sumaya um ma aya ya T Tel Teli eli Just the other day my 5 year old son was watching TV, when I heard him run to the bathroom… and then came the suspicious sounds of ‘trickling’.“MAMA! I weeweed on the floor!”“Argh!!!!” Annoyed, I rushed to him and really tried not to shout at him. “OK, sit on the loo and finish it now” I said instead. When he was done, I brought a heavy duty tissue roll and made it clear to him that I would help but he needed to clean it. He had just turned five a few months ago and while it may seem harsh, I was modelling the “perfect Montessori parent”. Cleaning the bathroom tiles would be a lesson in ‘practical life skills’. Plus, I was being ‘helpful parent’ and not a ‘helicopter parent’. I gave myself a virtual pat on the back for being such a calm, forward thinking mama. It didn’t last long. When my son’s attempts to clean the tiles only made the bathroom messier (it would have just been easier if I had mopped it up myself), I lost it. “Why was the TV so important? How many times have I told you not to hold it in?! Just look at all this mess!” The tone of my voice was definitely not calm.He looked upset – “I’m sorry mama…” I felt bad but then, felt angry again at the thought of another cleaning chore to add on to my already long to-do list. Needless to say my ‘calm parenting’ approach went out of the window. The Man Who Urinated In Prophet Muhammad’s Mosque Soon after this incident I went to my usual “Mommy & Me” halaqa group – a gathering of mothers, grandmothers and even nonmothers on Tuesday mornings at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center. That day the teacher mentioned the hadith of the bedouin who urinated in the masjid of the Prophet Muhammad Not only did our beloved Prophet stop his companions from throwing the bedoiun out or verbally abusing him, the Prophet told them not to stop him mid-stream, as that would be painful and uncomfortable. Only once the bedouin had finished did the Prophet go to him. The Prophet addressed him in such a loving and kind manner that the bedoiun declared that he loved the prophet with all his heart and made a fervent supplication, “May Allah grant Jannah (paradise) only to you and me, O Prophet,” he prayed, to which the Prophet replied mercifully, “You restrict that which is vast.” Mother Knows Best? This story! I had heard it and read it many times before. Why hadn’t I remembered it just two days ago when my young son accidentally urinated, not in my living room or on any carpet but on a tiled and easy-toclean surface in the bathroom itself. Why had I been so severe in dealing with him? I – his mother! SubhanAllah! The kindness of our prophet and the love he had for others – I felt it. I vowed to go home and apologize to my son and tell him this hadith. ‘‘If you asked your child who their hero is, what answer would you get?” In the mid 90’s, as a 12 year old, I remember reading an article from the iconic Trends Magazine that really struck me. The first line of the article asked a question, ‘‘If you asked your child who their hero is, what answer would you get?”

Names Of A l l a h (SWT) & Mohammad (PBUH) Last edition Al Names were Al

Mujib name of Allah(swt) & -Hijazi Mohammad(saw) name.

I was just a child myself and the prosp prospect pect ct of being a mother was so far removed. Yet, this question fascinated me. I knew what the ‘right’ and ‘Islamic’ answer should be from the ‘perfect’ child but what are the chances of an ordinary Muslim child naming the Prophet Ibrahim or Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them, as their hero, instead of Spiderman or Superman? It seemed impossible to me. Prophet Muhammad has a child’s hero vs. Marvel characters. Photo by Abhinay Omkar. Over the years I would consider the idea on and off until one day, my then-3-year-old son said “Mama when I grow up I want to be IRON MAN!” I had recently read in the book ‘Boys Should be Boys’ by American pediatrician Meg Meeker, that boys have an innate “boys’ code.” This is why they love all the super hero stuff; it speaks to their inner nature of being the “good guy.” This feeling, Meeker says, should be nurtured. To me, it made perfect sense and I had an epiphany. A child’s fitra (primordial disposition) is naturally inclined towards goodness. In a moment of (extremely rare) mothering enlightenment, I had a genius idea. “You know Iron Man isn’t real right?” I asked my son. “I know he’s fun and exciting and he sure is a good guy, but he is in a story that somebody made up… he is not a real man who ever existed.” My son didn’t look too convinced. Real Superheroes I tried a different angle – dragons and dinosaurs (another hot topic of interest!). I explained the difference between “not real and not existing” – (dragons) vs. “real but not existing any more” (dinosaurs). This seemed to clear things up and here is when I busted out my key idea. “You know who was a real superhero, don’t you?” I had his full attention. “Who?” I narrated the story of Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, and my son hung on to every single word. The trick was in the superhero jargon I used—that Musa had a ‘power stick’ that turned into a snake and ate all the snakes of the ‘bad guys’, and that his hand shone with the ‘power’ that Allah gave him. He used the power that Allah gave him in his power stick to part the whole sea, and save the ‘good guys’ from the bad, evil pharaoh. My son’s eyes were shining with wonder. He now had a sudden wish to know all about the evil pharaoh. “Why was he so bad?” he asked me.“Because he made people into slaves,” I answered, “and wanted others to worship him but we only worship Allah alone.”

Pro hetss Prophe Superhero Prophets Since that day, we have learned to love all the superhero prophets. Once at a restaurant, in a desperate bid to keep our son and his best friend occupied, my husband offered to tell them a story. “What story would you like to hear?” he asked, expecting to hear “Curious George,” or “Iron Man.” Instead, we heard an excited little voice pipe up – hands raised in air and all – “Prophet Ibrahim story! Prophet Ibrahim story!” I thought in my heart – subhanallah, Ya Rabb, truly You are the one who can make the impossible seem possible and here we are. Our son’s immediate reply to “Who is your hero?” might not be a prophet’s name or a sahaba’s (companion of the Prophet) name but we were one step closer. Prophet Ibrahim, apart from being super clever and tricking his people into admitting the big false idol they were worshiping could do nothing at all, also had the super power of being able to resist fire as Allah made the fire cool for him. “Like it just tickles him,” my son will add with a little giggle. Another favourite story is Prophet Yusuf’s story. He had the superhero power to interpret dreams. My son renamed his story: “The story of the Big Bad Brothers.” Knowing Our Children Keeping in mind what we know of our own children (and their interests) and what we know of our prophets, parents can make these stories come alive. We love each prophet and we are excited to find out their stories – even the Prophets who were not given super powers but fought evil with goodness always. And our last Prophet – Prophet Muhammad, who was so special and kind, had characteristics that were so relatable. Starting Over Tell your kids this hadith. Toilet humor always elicits giggles with the 4-7 age group and they will see the character of the Noble Prophet in a new light. Talk organically with your children about Allah and the Prophet Muhammad as part of everyday life. There are a wealth of opportunities and examples that are relevant for the child as well as the teen and young adult. In the words of sister Hina Khan-Mukthar – or actually in the words of her teenage son whom she quotes in a Facebook post:

In Fiji, 17 dead from ‘monster’ Cyclone Winston; schools shuttered for a week

By Kevin Conlon, Joshua Berlinger and Ralph Ellis, CNN

(CNN)At least 17 people were killed in Fiji when a record-breaking storm struck the island nation Saturday night, according to a CARE Australia tweet citing Fiji’s government. Now that Tropical Cyclone Winston has passed, the arduous tasks of cleanup and damage assessment from the most powerful storm on record in the Southern Hemisphere has begun, authorities say. “Many people have been left stunned and confused about what to do,” Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said after the storm passed. “The damage has been widespread, homes have been destroyed, many low lying areas have been flooded,” CNN affiliate TVNZ in New Zealand reported him as saying. There are reports of widespread power outages and thousands who left their homes for shelters. One man posted a video from Suva, the country’s capital, of electrical power lines exploding one after another as the cyclone hit. Officials continue to ask people to stay indoors.“There is a great deal of debris on our roads, power lines have gone down,

and iron, glass and other hazardous materials pose serious threats to our community,” Bainimarama said.Getting roads cleared and secured will take time, he said. A nationwide curfew remains in effect as emergency crews clear roads of downed trees and restore power. Nadi International Airport reopened Monday morning after being close for two days. Operations there are back to normal with few cancellations, according to airport staff. Schools, however, will be closed in Fiji for one week, the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management said. Winds that reached 296 kph (184 mph) lashed the tiny island nation in the Pacific, felling trees, knocking out power and causing heavy flooding, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported. ”Winston was a monster of a cyclone,” Fiji resident Nazeem Kasim told CNN. “I have not experienced anything like this before in my life, nor has my 60-year-old father.” The government declared a state of emergency that will be in effect for 30 days, according to the Fiji Times.

PICS Raises $850,000 for PICS Diversity Village

The Black Tie Affair, a gala fundraiser organized by PICS in support of PICS Diversity Village, a culturally sensitive extended care home for seniors on Saturday, garnered a whopping $400,000 (approx.) bringing the total up to an impressive $850,000 for the project. Thanking all sponsors and the community PICS CEO Mr. Charan Gill said, “We are overwhelmed with the faith and support that the entire community has shown for this project. We can assure you that when built PICS Diversity village will indeed be a legacy our future generations will be proud of and a testament to the values and the traditional circle of care that we have all inherited. More than 800 people attended the event including Canada’s National Defence Minister, Honourable Harjit Singh Sajjan

who was also the key note speaker. Minister Sajjan was accompanied by his wife and parents and emphasized how important it was for organizations like PICS to take leadership and build a home which caters to the needs of seniors in a culturally sensitive manner. “PICS Diversity Village is a fantastic project. As demographics are changing considerably, the need for more and more culturally sensitive services are urgently required and I am glad to support this project,” said Minister Sajjan. Other notable personalities included Provincial cabinet ministers Suzanne Anton, Peter Fassbender and Amrik Virk and her worship, Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner and many other MPs, MLAs, community leaders and friends of PICS. In a message wishing PICS for a suc-

On Feb 21, Mr. Gurpreet Singh of Radical Desi hosted a public meeting in commemoration of the victims of Samjhauta blast and the first death anniversary of Comrade Gobind Pansare at Surrey’s Strawberry Hill Library . The Samjhauta Rail explosion left 68 people dead on February 18, 2007 in Panipat, India. 42 victims were Pakistanis. The act of terror was committed by Hindutva extremists. The event was held to discuss Samjhauta case in particular and the growing threat of Hindutva terror in general. He criticized the Indian government for not resolving the case in past ten years. H He welcomed Mr. Chin Banerjee, of SANSAD, Mohammad Naseer Pirzada of Miracle Media and Hardev Sidhu at head table. Mr. Chin Banerjee was the first speaker who spoke about many

current issues of India. Mr. Pirzada said that the Indian Government is only worried about Nov 26 Bombay attack and the recent attack at Patankhot Airport, but why have they not explored the Samjhauta blast in which 42 innocent Pakistani included many kids were killed. He said that this train was coming from Delhi to Lahore not going from Lahore to Delhi. If it had happened the other way, then the story would be completely different. Mr Pirzada said that Indian Defence lawyer Mukesh Garg says, “It is a totally false case, our clients are innocent.” Prior to this Swamy Assem Anad had publicly admitted about this blast. Then why story has twisted. Being a journalist we are looking for justice in this case and India must bring those to trial and not cause delay with excuses

cessful fundraiser, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “PICS Diversity Village will fulfill a vital need in the community. Changes to Canadian Citizenship Act Will Allow Immigrants to Apply Earlier and More Easily

In a move that is likely to be of great benefit to immigrants to Canada who ultimately wish to obtain Canadian citizenship, the Liberal government of Canada has proposed a range of sweeping amendments to the Citizenship Act. These changes will allow people who have made the decision to immigrate to Canada to apply for and obtain citizenship sooner and more easily than is now the case. Among the proposed amendments is a reduction in the amount of time permanent residents have to live in Canada in order to become eligible to apply for citizenship, from four out of six years to three out five years. Moreover, certain applicants who spent time in Canada on temporary status would be able to count a portion of this time towards the three-year requirement. The proposed amendments would also repeal the intent to reside provision and remove language proficiency requirements for certain applicants. In addition, the new legislation would repeal a contentious provision that revoked citizenship from dual Canadian citizens convicted of terrorism, treason or espionage. With a majority government in place, it is expected that the proposals will become law in the near future.

Background In June, 2014, the previous Conservative government of Canada brought into law the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act (also known as bill C-24). This controversial legislation allowed the government to revoke citizenship in certain cases, and made

eligibility requirements for immigrants more onerous than had previously beenthe case. The now-governing Liberal Party of Canada, which came into office last November, made a public pledge in its election manifesto to ‘repeal the unfair elements of Bill C-24 that create second-class citizens and the elements that make it more difficult for hardworking immigrants to become Canadian citizens.’ Only a few months into its term of office, the government is now acting on its word. Canada encourages new immigrants to consider becoming naturalized citizens and join the Canadian family. With Canadian citizenship, an individual may obtain a Canadian passport, vote in elections, stand for public office, and leave and re-enter Canada freely without being beholden to the residency obligations faced by permanent residents. What is changing? The proposed changes to the Citizenship Act run the full gamut of the act, from how an individual may become eligible for citizenship to the rights bestowed once citizenship is conferred on the person. Repeal of revocation provision Current act: Authority to revoke citizenship for certain acts against the national interest of Canada. These grounds include convictions of terrorism, high treason, treason or spying offences, depending on the sentence received, or for membership in an armed force or organized armed group engaged in armed conflict with Canada. Proposed amendment: Repeal national

interest grounds for revocation. Repeal of intention to reside provision Current act: Applicants must have the intention to reside in Canada if granted citizenship. Proposed amendment: Repeal intent to reside provision. Physical presence in Canada Current act: Physical presence for 4 out of 6 years before the date of application. Proposed amendment: Physical presence for 3 out of 5 years before the date of application. Counting temporary status Current act: Time spent in Canada as a non-permanent resident may not be counted. Proposed amendment: Applicants may count each day they were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident as a half-day toward meeting the physical presence requirement for citizenship, up to a maximum of one year of credited time. Less burdensome annual physical presence requirement Current act: Minimum of 183 days physical presence in 4 of the last 6 years. Proposed amendment: Repeal the minimum 183 days physical presence in 4 of the last 6 years. Fewer people need to prove language proficiency Current act: Applicants aged 14-64 must meet language requirements and pass knowledge test. Proposed amendment: Applicants aged 18-54 must meet language requirements and pass knowledge test. Canadian income taxes Current act: File Canadian income

taxes, if required to do so under the Income Tax Act, for four taxation years out of six years, matching physical presence requirement. Proposed amendment: File Canadian income taxes, if required to do so under the Income Tax Act, for three taxation years out of five years, matching proposed new physical presence requirement.

Conditional sentence now a bar Current act: Time spent serving a conditional sentence order can be counted towards meeting physical presence requirements. Convicted individuals who are serving conditional sentence orders (sentences served in the community with certain conditions) are not prohibited from being granted citizenship or taking the oath of citizenship. Proposed amendment: Time spent under a conditional sentence order cannot be counted towards meeting the physical presence requirements; and those serving a conditional sentence order are prohibited from being granted citizenship or taking the oath of citizenship. http://www.cicnews.com/2016/03/canadian-citizenship-act-

Genetic engineering, GMO foods and human health. By: Nafisa Siddiqui I was reading a book about GMO food and the science of biotechnology in the hands of bunch of genetic engineers. The picture is very scary of how genetic science alters the basic things we need on daily basis, namely “food and environment . The word GMO is still very confusing around the globe because the language used is mystifying language of “Genetics. “GMO stands for “genetically modified Organisms these are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering or GE. A more specifically defined type of GMO is a “Transgenic Organism. This is an organism whose genetic makeup has been altered by the addition of genetic material from another, unrelated organism. The first genetically modified mouse was produce in 1973 and the first plant was produced in 1983. Gio fish is the first GMO animal sold as a pet, afterwards they began experimenting, mixing human genes with rat, rat and jelly fish genes in corn. AquaBounty’s genetically modified salmon grows twice as fast as the conventional variety, a goat that produced spiders web protein in milk, this was the brain child animal of Nexia Biotechnologies, this GE animal came in year 2000. Glowing in dark cat named Fluorescent felines cloned in 2007 by South Korean scientists by altering cats DNA. Imagine yourself after fifteen years eating at a dinner, the menu says; steak with a choice of beef, mutton or your special all three in one burger “BFM all fresh from our excellent bioreactor, house grown meat steak, heart friendly loaded withOmega -3 , glow in the dark corn on the cob, high protein GM salad from our back yard, chicken nuggets made from stem cells and organic power bread specially made from our own harvested crickets. Think of a camping trip with a basket filled with all glowing at night GMO food like glow in dark corn and beef burgers beside glowing in dark utensils as well as my kids wearing glowing in dark jackets and bracelets, with Fluorescent felines, a Korean made glowing in dark cat as a pet.

That’s some thing to fantasies, to cheer up ourselves. The consequences of Bio technology in the hands of the over enthusiastic bio engineers and the their experiments to play with nature some times seems like children lost in candy land, on the other hand this is very serious is about our food, our health, and the health of our future generations all are at stake. Health conscious Canadian need to get information about GMO foods that are filling our grocery stores, the scary part is that they are not labeled, according to government of Canada, all this comes under the umbrella of “Novelty food, and labeling is mandatory. Producers of GM food claim it an Agriculture Revolution and produce crop that survive frost, drought, pests and plague and a solution to world hunger. The parties against GMO food make allegations that these bioengineers are playing God with plant genes, it’s a dangerous process which can be responsible for the numerous and now frequently seen food allergies, upsetting ecosystems, biodiversities and produce uncontrollable mutations. But no one seems interested in listening to the outcry of consumers. If every thing they say are so great, then why is media not used to educate consumers, build confidence and awareness about their awesome work for humanity. The truth is that they themselves are not sure because such crops have been put in the market without proper testing and proof, that its not harmful for human consumption. The first plant was created in 1986 and the public became aware of it in 1990 when it was first commercialized as “Franken food. The first GMO crop (the Flavr Savr tomato) was approved by the FDA in 1994. However, the tomatoes were so delicate that they were difficult to transport, and they were off the market by 1997, these tomatoes were also reported to be bland in taste. Since then, GE varieties of corn, soya, sugar beets and canola have become common local crops in Canada. In addition to locally produced crops, GE varieties of cottonseed oil, papaya, squash and milk products are imported from the USA into Canada. In the last 20 years, GMO ingredients have made their way into most of the processed foods available on Canadian grocery shelves.

Right now Canada is growing only these GMO crops 1.Canola, 2. Corn,3. Soy, 4. Sugar beet. Apples, potatoes and wheat are all in the lineup for approval. Milk is enhanced in DHA by the addition of a novel DHA-rich feed additive to dairy cattle feed rations. At this point I think it’s appropriate to explore the back ground how it all happened and why the rush, which involves the whole human race as a guinea pigs to this GE food experiment . It all started when scientist James D.Watson who discovered double –helix structure of DNA, said in his speech at University of California in 1999, that this technology held such Certain Promise over un- certain peril, though he mentioned the word “Peril . Bio engineers are researching on edible vaccine they found banana as the best candidate for this experiment, imagine vaccine banana in your backyard is fascinating, reality will probably fall short of the backyard banana tree. “The only worry the scientists have with this technology is about setting the dosage and the ripeness of the banana, said Bernard Ivanoff, global coordinator for vaccines at the World Health Organization. What gives you a moment of some serious thinking is what is going to happened with all those vertical genes in open fields most of them are from viruses and bacteria and excess of pesticides use how it is going to balance earths fertility. GMO crops are introduced as the solution to world hunger , and provide food for generations to come. An advantage for the farmers by developing pesticides and herbicides resistant crops which they say will decrease the cost and as well as use of pesticides and increase the yield . Unfortunately bugs and weeds become increasingly resistant to these chemicals. farmers end up increasing the use of pesticides, more spraying means more cost and more damage to environment and more purchases from the companies that produce seeds and develop pesticides. Another concern is that these “Modified organisms may interbreed with natural organisms. This could lead to the extinction of the original organ-

ism or to other unpredictable environmental effects. Monsanto is the largest seed company produces about 86% of world GMO seeds it also produce Roundup ready which has glyphosate as its active ingredient. Roundup Ready crop seeds are known as “terminator seeds. This is because the crops produced from Roundup Ready seeds are sterile. Each year, farmers must purchase the most recent strain of seed from Monsanto. This means that farmers cannot reuse their best seed. Steven M.Druker, in his book “Altered genes Twisted Truth mentions that “glyphosate is found to be a potent endocrine disrupter at levels up to 800 times lower than residue levels allowed in food and feed, it is also observed to be toxic to human cell and also damages DNA at doses far below those used in agriculture. The safety of GMO food is yet unproven. Mostly we are unaware whether foods we are choosing contain GMOS. It should be made mandatory for all the products containing GMO to be labelled as such. The Non-GMO groups have started voluntarily labeling Non GMO certification to facilitate consumer information. Today, consumers are in the dark of an uncontrolled, unregulated mass human experiment the result of which is unknown, consumers are swimming in a vast ocean of ignorance about GMO foods, evidence connects GMOS with health problems, environmental damage. Agricultural biotechnology has been commercialized without regard to citizen and their consumer rights, we are entitled to choose what to eat. Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life!

“Canada was built by citizen immigrants, people who come here permanently with their families to become Canadians.” - Hon. John McCallum, MP Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Respond to Canada’s need for immigrants.

Become a Regulated Immigration Consultant By Leanne Beattie, How do you do it?” my friend asked me one day over coffee. “You’ve had some awful stuff happen to you over the years, but you’re still so cheerful. What gives?” My friend was right, my life had been rough at times. I’d gotten divorced and I’d been laid off a couple of times within a five-year period. I should have been angry and bitter, but I wasn’t. I was still looking forward to each new day and the possibilities ahead of me. While this was normal for me, my friend’s comment made me realize that not everybody felt the way I did. Why was I so optimistic, anyway?

ability to handle stress.

Happiness through Positive Self-Talk

Optimism comes from the Latin word optimus, meaning “best,” which describes how an optimistic person is always looking for the best in any situation and expecting good things to happen. Optimism is the tendency to believe, expect or hope that things will turn out well. Even if something bad happens, like the loss of a job, an optimist sees the silver lining. For me, getting laid off was the catalyst that allowed me to start my own business. As I packed up my office, my mind was already whirling with the possibilities ahead. Without that push, I may never have made the leap to self-employment. Losing my job was a good thing after all. The emerging field of positive psychology studies the positive impact that optimism has on mental health. Other research shows that optimism may be good for my physical health too—optimists are sick less and live longer than pessimists. Apparently, a positive outlook on life strengthens the immune system (and the body’s defenses against illness), cardiovascular system (optimists have fewer heart attacks), and the body’s

Being an optimist or a pessimist boils down to the way you talk to yourself. Optimists believe that their own actions result in positive things happening, that they are responsible for their own happiness, and that they can expect more good things to happen in the future. Optimists don’t blame themselves when bad things happen. They view bad events as results of something outside of themselves. I didn’t blame myself for losing my job, but saw it as a business decision that had nothing to do with me personally. Pessimists think the opposite way, however. They blame themselves for the bad things that happen in their lives and think that one mistake means more will inevitably come. Pessimists see positive events as flukes that are outside of their control—a lucky streak that probably won’t happen again. Because of their thought processes, optimists have much brighter futures. A bad circumstance or event is taken in stride, viewed as a temporary setback—not a permanent way of life. Even if something bad happens today, a positive thinker believes that good things will come again in the future. Optimists tend to share several other positive characteristics that increase overall happiness and promote health, while reducing depression and chronic stress: They think about, reflect on, and emphasize the good things in life. They are grateful and thankful for all their blessings. They don’t complain when something bad happens. They feel that nothing can hold them back

By: Poverty Reduction Coalition Little flags, in their hundreds, written by people living in poverty are part of a new display designed to make poverty visible so it will become an issue in the next election. The display is at the Main Vancouver Public Library on Georgia St. The flags have words and images written by people from across the province about what it’s like to live in poverty and why welfare and disability rates should be raised. The flags were strung up today and will be there for 2 weeks. “The flags were made by community members from across BC,” Trish Garner of the Poverty Reduction Coalition told a news conference that launched the flags into public view. “Safe, secure Housing that is affordable,”

says one flag. “I don’t know that people know how low welfare rates are,” said Joanne Shaw of Raise the Rates. People on disability only get $906, and people on straight welfare $610. Rates should be doubled. Write letters and make it an election issue,” said Shaw.“Standing in line-ups becomes a way of life,” says another flag. “$610 is not enough to pay the rent and eat,” explained Fraser Stuart who was on welfare for three years. “As a result of not eating and sleeping properly I now have a heart condition and stomach problems that are costing the health care system.” “Sharing the wealth with others = love,” says another flag. “Our kids are going hungry,” said Victoria Bull, simply. “Good thing I like peanut but-

Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life Luckily, you can change your thinking patterns over time. Even a pessimist can become an optimist with enough practice! All you need to do is to reframe how you define events. Instead of dwelling on the bad experience, analyze it to figure out what good can come of it. Even if a project at work is deemed a failure, think about what you learned during the process. What strengths did you discover within yourself, and when can you use those talents again? Instead of blaming yourself for the failure, think about the outside influences that may have affected your project. Maybe you were delayed by outside vendors, so you couldn’t meet a deadline; or management decided to go in another direction, making your project redundant. Virtually any failure can be turned into a learning experience, which increases your potential for success in the future. Optimism is a skill of emotional intelligence, which translates to a better career and greater success in life. Life is too short to be miserable, so start turning your thinking around! Positive thoughts, an optimistic outlook, and overall happiness can advance your prospects for work, relationships and other life experiences.

“Souls” of people living in poverty on display at Main Vancouver Library ter,” says another flag. “Helping people is the proper thing for government to do, added Fraser Doke, who is on disability with HIV and a transplanted liver. Doke is the one who called the flags, the “soul” of the people.” “Welfare rates, they are in despair. Help us increase the rates PLEASE,” says another flag.“Living on welfare is very, very bad for your health,” added Harold Lavender, a man who was on disability for 9 years with no increase.“Christy Clark, you should open your eyes, ears, and especially your heart,” says another flag. “I can’t believe that Clark is announcing that we’re getting an increase when she is taking the bus pass away,” said Colleen Boudreau, a single mother on disability.

“FOOD” says another flag. “The banners give voice to the poverty that is BC,” said Bill Hopwood of Raise the Rates. The government’s excuse that “we can’t afford to tackle poverty is a lie.” Hopwood cited statistics such as the government giving $226 million in tax cuts to the rich last year and $41,000 a year in tax cuts to the rich since 2000. “Poverty is a political choice,” said Hopwood. “Christy Clark has 2 given to the rich but has not given 2 the poor,” says another flag. Holding up a flag that says, simply, “See me,” Garner said the display could help the public see people for who they are, “not the stats, not the myths.” The display will be at Vancouver Central Public Library on Georgia St. until March 12.

Tips for Avoiding the Crowds When Traveling

By Avril Betts

When you go on holiday you are looking to your new surroundings to find relaxation and enjoyment away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. If your chosen destination is a hot tourist spot then you are likely to be overwhelmed by masses of tourists, noise and long line ups at your intended site visits. At this point you might wonder why you ever left home. Here are some tips to bypass the crowds and avoid the frustrations that might otherwise spoil your trip. Book Your Passes or Event Tickets in Advance: These days many Passes and Event Tickets can be booked online or through your Travel Agent and will save waiting in line ups. Arrive before or After the Crowds: Many of the sites have key times when the masses turn up, go early before the crowds or later, when they are likely to have left - even lunch times are good as many of the groups will have left to have lunch. Travel in the Off-Season and avoid Main Holiday Periods: Find out when the shoulder seasons are for your particular destination – these periods are often cheaper and definitely have less crowds to tend with. Remember that main holidays like, Christmas and Easter usually incur supplementary charges and will definitely be more crowded with holiday makers. Talk To Your Travel Agent and Hotel Concierge:

Ask questions, get maps, ask about taxis, restaurants and the sites you wish to visit. These folks are experts and can save you lots of hassle trying to find things out for yourself. Sign Up For Special Tours/Event in Advance: If there are any special events or tours being offered for your Vacation buy them in advance. Firstly they are usually cheaper purchased in advance and secondly it ensures you get booked in before they are sold out. Week Days as opposed to Weekends: I think we all know that most sites and events are less crowded during the week than on weekends when people are off work and the kids are out of school. Flights are also usually cheaper weekdays than they are on weekends. Choose the lesser visited sites during Peak Periods: If you know that the main sites are going to be crowded during peak periods, try to choose the more off the

beaten path sites during these times and save the main sites for quieter periods. School Holidays are always busy: When the kids are out of school you can guarantee that sites will be busy as families will be limited to traveling during these times if they don’t wish to take their kids out of school. Try to choose your travel times outside of these periods if you wish to avoid the crowds. Opt Out of the Photo Ops on Entry: Bypass the Photo Ops often offered at sites as you enter. Firstly you will bypass the line-up and you will save money as they are usually expensive. You can readily take your own photos with a cell phone these days. Vary your Meal Times: If you don’t have to have set meal times for medical reasons, then it makes good sense to vary your meal times to avoid the busy restaurant periods especially at lunch and dinner times. Besides avoiding the crowds you are likely to get bet-

ter service when the staff have less folks to service at one time. Avoid staying in Noisy Areas: If you like a good nights sleep then be aware of the location of your Hotel. Stay away from busy and high traffic areas especially if there is a lot of night life going on in that area. Even if the Hotel is quiet you are likely to have late night revelers coming back to the Hotel at all hours of the night, and after a night of frivolity they aren’t likely to be quiet when going to their rooms. Check to see if any sports events are going on in the area and if the teams are staying at your Hotel – if they are you might be in for a noisy night. Are there any Cruise Ships in Town?: When Cruise ships dock for the day passengers are offered sightseeing and shopping tours. This means the local sites and shops will be overrun with Cruise passengers. Find out when Cruises are booked to Dock and if possible avoid the sites and shops on those days. Check for The Weather: Mother nature controls a lot of what we do especially for outdoor activities. Check the forecasts and plan your indoor and outdoor activities accordingly to accommodate the weather. It pays to be flexible when it comes to weather, and to have back up plans if the weather changes.

YOUTH

What is bullying? Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength. Bullying can take many forms, such as hitting, kicking, threatening others, teasing, name-calling, excluding from a group, or sending mean notes or e-mails. A child who is being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. Often, children are bullied not just once or twice but over and over (Olweus, 1993; Roland, 1989; Smith & Sharp, 1994). Unfortunately, bullying is very common during the elementary and middle school years. In one study of fourth through sixth graders, 25 percent of students admitted to bullying another student several times or more often during the school term (Melton et al., 1998). Another study found that 80 percent of middle school students reported engaging in some form of bullying during the past 30 days, with 15 percent doing so frequently (Bosworth et al., 1999). In a national study of more than 15,000 students in grades 6 through 10, 17 percent reported having been bullied “sometimes” or more often during the school term, and 19 percent reported bullying others “sometimes” or more often (Nansel et al., 2001). Isn’t bullying just part of growing up? Perhaps this attitude is why bullying is still common in American schools. There is a lot of research that shows

that being a victim of a bully can affect students’ self-esteem and how they approach school (Juvonen & Graham, 2001). Students who are often bullied by other students may have serious levels of depression and anxiety, and they are more likely than other students to think about suicide (Austin & Joseph, 1996; Grills & Ollendick, 2002). Victims of bullying also are more likely than other students to report that they do not want to go to school because of fear of being bullied (Slee, 1995). Some children who are bullied decide, in turn, to bully others. For all of these reasons, it is important that schools address the bullying problem in their school. Where does bullying happen? Most bullying happens at school and on the school bus to and from school (Hoover, Oliver, & Hazler, 1992). Bullying also can take place when kids walk to and from school, but this is not quite as common. Bullying is more likely to happen when large groups of students are supervised by a small number of adults, including during lunchtime, recess, physical education, and when kids change classes (Espelage & Asidao, 2001; Olweus, 1993). Students also report being bullied in the classroom when their teacher’s attention is diverted (e.g., when the teacher turns around to write on the board or is distracted helping other students). Do boys and girls bully in the same ways? Both boys and girls bully, but there are some interesting differences in how they bully. Boys tend to be bullied by other boys, whereas girls are bullied both by boys and girls (Melton et al., 1998; Olweus, 1993). The most common form of bullying for both boys and girls is verbal bullying (teasing or name-calling). Boys are more likely to say that they are physically bullied. Girls are more likely to report being targets of rumor-

Bullying in youth!

spreading and sexual comments (Nansel et al., 2001). Both boys and girls. Individuals who use relational aggression tend to exclude students from a group activity (e.g., a game on the playground or a party) or they might threaten to not be someone’s friend unless he or she does what they say. Girls are somewhat more likely than boys to bully each other through social isolation (Olweus, 2002). Bullying often involves groups of students picking on another student (Craig & Pepler, 1997; Espelage & Asidao, 2001). Within these groups, there often is a “ring leader” and a number of followers. In addition, many students observe bullying but do not necessarily take any action—they neither engage in the bullying nor help stop the bullying. Children and youth are often reluctant to try to stop bullying because they are afraid of being bullied themselves, because the want to be part of a popular group, or because they simply are not sure how to help. Who is bullied? Any child can be bullied. It is important not to blame or look for faults in children who are bullied, because nobody deserves to be abused by their peers. However, understanding some common characteristics of children who are bullied may help adults identify children who are likely targets of bullying and help protect them from abuse. Research indicates that children who are bullied tend to be more socially isolated than other children (Espelage & Asidao, 2001, Nansel et al., 2001). These children may seem to be easy targets for bullying because they have few friends to help protect them. They also may be shy, sensitive, or insecure children (Olweus, 1993). Boys who are bullied are often (though not always) physically weaker than their peers. Educators, parents, and others should be especially watchful for bullying of children with disabilities,

as these children are often bullied by their peers. What causes a student to start bullying? There is no one single cause of bullying among children and youth. Rather, there are many factors in a child’s environment (his or her family, peer group, classroom, school, neighborhood, and society) that can contribute to bullying behavior. Students who bully are more likely to witness violence in their home, have little parental supervision, and lack warmth and involvement from their parents (Olweus, 1993). Children who bully also are likely to “hang out” with others who bully and feel that they gain their popularity or “coolness” by teasing other students (Pellegrini et al., 1999). Bullying thrives in schools where faculty and staff do not address bullying, where there is no policy against bullying, and where there is little supervision of students—especially during lunch, bathroom breaks, and recess. Negative models of bullying behavior are also

prevalent throughout society—especially in television, movies, and video games. The good news is that much can be done to stop bullying in our schools. A single school assembly, PTA meeting, or social studies lesson on bullying won’t solve the problem, however. What is needed is a team effort by students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other staff to change the culture or climate of schools.

Acceptance - It’s Your Choice!

By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Sometimes you’re an observer of other people’s lives and you may think you’ll never experience what they’re living through, whether it is a positive or negative situation. You may think, “That will never happen to me.” Part of real beauty of life is that it’s unpredictable. Nothing is permanent, everything changes, and of course, a lot of things can happen that will transform who you are and have an impact on your life. We need to cultivate the ability to truly accept whatever comes and embrace it. We need to develop the habit of looking at whatever happens through a positive mindset, instead of a negative and defeatist one. Of course, life will bring many challenges and it’s not easy to embrace them when we’re suffering and wishing those things would have never happened. But if we start cultivating acceptance in our lives right now, we’ll likely to cope with future crisis in a different way and view them from a different perspective. We will accept instead or resisting. The reality is we might want things to be different in the future, but in the present moment we need to accept things as they are. That’s way you can make your life flow smoothly instead of roughly. As you go along, you will discover that you will be happier and more peaceful when you accept what had happened, instead of constantly fighting to change things. There are two ways out of a problem, accept what’s happening, see the positive, and choose a peaceful state of mind or fight against it. Be miserable and struggle against the universe. Learning to accept things as they present themselves is a helpful tool in different aspects of life. Whether it’s any loss, a missed opportunity, or a sudden change in your plans, being able to accept things as they come (when they are out of our control) will help you maintain inner peace and happiness.

Acceptance is the key to convert momentary happiness to enduring happiness. It helps you move from feeling happy to actually being happy. Practicing acceptance prepares you to live in this changing world, where you never know what’s going to happen next. Acceptance is like protecting yourself with your own shield. It’s helpful to learn how to identify when it’s time to persist and when it’s time to accept. One thing that makes acceptance much easier is to list all the possible explanations for why you’re experiencing something. Finding the purpose behind every challenge will help you embrace it, instead of fighting it. Choose not to judge what happens to you. Instead, believe that everything happens for a reason and that better things will always follow. That’s the beginning of true acceptance. The important thing is not to understand why something happened. Our understanding can wait, but our obedience cannot. When something unpredictable happens, instead of complaining and over-thinking it, we need to choose to live with it. It’s hard to practice acceptance when you deeply wish things aren’t the way they are. But the truth is, sometimes we can’t change our reality, even though we try. Instead of staring at the closed door in front of us or getting tired and bruised while we try to break it down, let’s turn around and see how many other windows we could open. Acceptance is a choice - a hard one most definitely but in the end, it’s a choice that only we can make at any given situation of our life. For More Info:shabnamsk@hotmail.com

“Children in Family”!

By Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker Recently I was out to one of the most cosmopolitan city of the world. I had good chances of meeting and spending quality time with many youngsters, young adults, parents, children and families. It was very interesting and enriching experience. The youngsters were full of life, ready to face challenges. They had dreams and courage to walk on the hard path to pursue it. Some children were lucky enough to have parents and friends support. Some were struggling on all fronts. Some children were troubled as they were not able to get anywhere with family, they were not able to convince them now they were able to give up their views and accept parents plan

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Oscar winner, says Canada informs her work

Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who won the Academy Award for documentary short, credits her time in Canada for helping inform her powerful storytelling. “When you live in a country like Canada, you begin to realize how right things can be,” Obaid-Chinoy told CBC inside the Oscars press room after her win. “Then when you travel back to Pakistan and to other countries which are in conflict, you can see what’s going wrong.” Her winning documentary short, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, is about honour killings, told through the eyes of Saba Qaiser. “She wanted her story told,” said Obaid-Chinoy. “The impact of her story is tremendous, because it is going to change lives, and it’s going to save lives, and there can be no greater reward than that.”Qaiser, 18, fell in love with a man against her family’s wishes. Shortly after they eloped, her father and uncle shot her in the head and left her for

dead. Her survival led her to become a rare voice for women in similar situations and the one needed for Obaid-Chinoy to tell the story. “I think it’s important to see what what human beings are capable of,” said the filmmaker. Obaid-Chinoy, who now lives in Pakistan but has spent a lot of time going between Toronto and her home country, said her work has prompted difficult conversations that often risked her life but that there is “payback” in doing so. The filmmaker and journalist also won an Academy Award for her 2012 documentary Saving Face, about women in Pakistan searching for justice after suffering acid attacks. That win made her the first Pakistani to capture an Oscar. “The power of being nominated for an Academy Award really does mean for a country like Pakistan that you can change laws.” Source : cbc news

Bangladesh hold nerve to seal final berth

Those who watch cricket regularly will tell you that in a tight contest, the winning side will always show some signs of their impending triumph. Mahmudullah’s upright blast over extra cover at the start of the 17th over can only be described as the shot of the tournament so far. In a tight chase of 130 against Pakistan, it was only fair that Mahmudullah struck the blow that took Bangladesh to the Asia Cup final. Despite Shakib Al Hasan’s brain freeze to Mohammad Amir in the 18th over, Mashrafe Mortaza struck two heroic fours immediately after to ease Bangladesh’s nerves. Then, in a manic 19th over bowled by Mohammad Sami which included two no balls, Mahmudullah’s squeezed boundary past point all but sealed victory for the hosts. Once Mahmudullah duly knocked off the winning runs with a slog past midwicket, he and Mashrafe wheeled away in wild celebration, nearly ramming into their on-rushing teammates. Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 15-ball 22 was perhaps the most important innings of his career, particularly because he was at the crease in the last over of the 2012 Asia Cup final, when Bangladesh fell short by two runs against Pakistan. This game went into the last over too, but mostly because Bangladesh lost wickets at crucial stages and were trying their best not to crumble to Amir. The other Pakistan bowlers were all shoddy, and they were not helped by the team’s very poor effort in the field. Still, it was Bangladesh who were pegged back early in their 130-run chase. Tamim Iqbal was the first to go as a rare leg-before victim of Mohammad Irfan, who brought the ball into the batsman and hit the striding front pad half-way up.

Luckily, Soumya Sarkar found Sabbir Rahman willing to stick around to weather the initial Amir storm. After the pair had safely negotiated those two overs, they looked for runs off the other bowlers. Soumya managed to hit Amir for an elegant four through midwicket, while Sabbir’s only boundary in his 15-ball 14 also came through a roll of the wrist, through fine-leg. Sabbir fell to Shahid Afridi in the ninth over, missing a charge completely to be bowled. Soumya survived a few close calls with miscued hits dropping short on a number of occasions, but he was generally hitting them well on the leg-side. Mushfiqur Rahim was also lucky to survive a close leg-before appeal to Afridi before Amir and Malik brought Pakistan into the game in the space of eight deliveries in the 13th and 14th overs. Having been brought back for a single over as his second spell, Amir yorked Soumya by clattering into his leg-stump. Soumya had made a run-a-ball 48 that had five fours and the pumped six into the midwicket stands, but when he got out, Bangladesh needed 47 off 40 balls. There was much expected from the experienced duo of Mushfiqur and Shakib at that stage, but Mushfiqur was given out legbefore trying to reverse-sweep Malik in the over after Soumya got out. Taskin Ahmed and Al-Amin Hossain were Bangladesh’s best bowlers, stepping up in the absence of Mustafizur Rahman, who was ruled out through a right side strain. Taskin bowled his first maiden over in his T20I career in a first-spell that saw him give away just one run. His second spell produced the wicket of Umar Akmal; he finished with figures of 4-1-14-1. Al-Amin bowled two tight overs

at the top, giving away just nine runs before returning in the last four overs to give away four and 12, as Bangladesh decently closed out the Pakistan innings for 129 for 7. Pakistan’s innings followed the same pattern of their previous games, losing three early wickets. Khurram Manzoor sent to open the batting, played out the first over and then got out for one off the first ball of the second, an Al-Amin delivery that jumped on him outside off-stump. It was the third time in the four Asia Cup matches that Al-Amin had taken a wicket in his first spell. Sharjeel Khan was bowled after missing a slog off Arafat Sunny in the fourth over, after he had faced just eight balls till that point, hitting a four and six. Mohammad Hafeez was unlucky when he was given out leg-before by umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge when even on the first view, it looked as if the Mashrafe Mortaza delivery was climbing. Replays confirmed that it was yet another erroneous decision by an umpire in the Asia Cup. When Taskin removed Akmal in his second spell,

Pakistan ended with the lowest score - 34 for 4 - in the first ten overs against Bangladesh. Sarfraz Ahmed and Malik then joined hands for a fifth-wicket partnership. Malik struck Shakib for a six that was as straight as an arrow, and also found three fours on the off-side as well as one that was tickled past long-leg. Sarfraz got both his sixes with swings to midwicket, and tucked into fours through covers, midwicket, and mid-on. Malik was in the groove when he mistimed Sunny to the deep midwicket boundary for 41 off 30 balls. Soon, Sarfraz reached his second T20I fifty with an inside-out blast over cover in the penultimate over. But it was Mahmudullah’s inside-out blast over the covers that would be the most memorable moment of the game, as Bangladesh got themselves to the final of a tournament that they were fearing a bit more than the World T20 itself.
