Turkey hits PKK targets in Iraq after Ankara bombing Turkey’s air force has hit Kurdish targets in northern Iraq after a car bombing struck the Turkish capital, Ankara, killing at least 37 people and wounding more than 70 others. The state-run Anadolu news agency said nine F-16s and two F-4 jets on Monday raided 18 positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), including the Qandil mountains -where the group’s leadership is based. The retaliation was reported as funerals were held in Ankara for the victims of Sunday’s bombing. The air strikes targeted ammunition depots, bunkers and shelters. The Turkish military said the targets were hit “with precision”, and a PKK spokesman confirmed the strikes. Police also carried out raids in the southern city of Adana, detaining suspected PKK members, Anadolu reported. The private Dogan news agency said at least 36 suspects were taken into custody. Fifteen suspected Kurdish fighters were also detained in Istanbul, Anadolu said. Mehmet Muezzinoglu, Turkey’s health minister, gave a toll of 37 on Monday but said this included at

Trudeau’s Washington Visit
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took office in November 2015 and carries one of the most famous names in Canadian political history. His late father Pierre Trudeau was prime minister for the better part of 16 years (1968-1984); he remains the rare Canadian politician who is recognized in America. The late prime minister was Canada’s greatest PM next to John A. Macdonald; he visited both Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. He took Canada onto the world stage, defeated separatism, and repatriated the constitution and created Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s state visit to Washington was the first in 19 years; his following of his father’s footsteps is impressive indeed. Beyond doubt, Canada and the United States are uniquely inter-related as two sovereign countries of North America that are sharing the longest border; they are reliant on mutual trade, economic prosperity and border security. Despite a number of differences, they stand as an example of interdependence and mutual co-operation for the world to follow as the best model. However, there are still some gaps needing to be bridged by the two democracies. Trudeau’s recent visit to Washington has opened doors for improving the prevailing atmosphere of mutual understanding for the benefit of the people on both sides of the border and for the rest of the World of course. “Whether we’re charting a course for environmental protection, making key investments to grow our middle class, or defending the rights of oppressed peoples abroad, Canada and the US will forever collaborate in partnership and good faith.” (Justin Trudeau) Mr. Trudeau wants to ensure the issues of contention between the U.S. and Canada are resolved amicably at the working level on a
daily basis. Since the visit was about securing Mr Obama’s goodwill to help Mr. Trudeau to advance his environmental agenda, some agreements of vital importance took place.
Outcome of the Washington meeting at a glance:
•The leaders agreed to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 40 to 45 per cent below 2012 levels by 2025 and pursue related international commitments through the G20. •Both countries committed to reduce the use and emissions of hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) and promised to “propose new actions in 2016.” •The two countries also plan to provide increased financial support to help developing countries reduce HFCs. •The leaders reaffirmed a commitment to work toward a second phase of aligned greenhouse gas emission standards for on-road heavy-duty vehicles after the 2018 model year. •The two countries agreed to use “similar values for the social cost of carbon and other GHGs for assessing the benefits of regulatory measures.” •Both leaders expressed a “strong commitment” to reduce emissions from international aviation, through technological and operational advancements, a new carbon standard for airplanes and by adopting in 2016 a “carbon offset measure that will allow for carbon-neutral growth from international civil aviation.” •In the interests of North American energy security, the leaders pledged to integrate and advance clean energy and align energy efficiency standards. •They will also develop a strategy for protecting the North American electricity grid “against the growing threat from cyber-attacks and climate change impacts.” •Trudeau and Obama announced a new partnership on the “changing Arctic,” to expand the protection of
land and marine areas, “more broadly and respectfully include Indigenous science and traditional knowledge into decision making,” pursue lowimpact shipping routes and adopt a “science-based” approached to oil and gas development. •The two countries agreed in principle to expand customs pre-clearance for passengers to Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto and Quebec City’s Jean Lesage International Airport, as well as to rail service in Montreal and Vancouver. They will also “work to convert existing pre-inspection sites in British Columbia to full pre-clearance” and “explore the conditions necessary for cargo pre-clearance and identify opportunities to pilot this approach.” •The two leaders agreed to establish a “Canada-U.S. Redress Working Group” to deal with complaints about the no-fly list. •Canada and the United States will “fully implement a system to exchange basic biographic entry information at the land border in a manner that respects our separate constitutional and legal frameworks, and protects our citizens’ right to privacy.” •Regarding softwood lumber, the leaders were not able to announce a new agreement on the recurring trade dispute, but officials have been asked to explore options and report back within 100 days on how to address the issue. At the joint press conference after the leaders’ meeting, Obama told reporters progress had already been made and the issue would be resolved “in some fashion,” adding wryly that the eventual solution would be “undoubtedly to the dissatisfaction of all concerned.” •The TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) is a trade deal that Obama is keen to see ratified, and one that the Trudeau government has signed on to but has also committed to consulting Canadians.
•“The United States and Canada share the goal of enhancing shared prosperity, creating jobs, protecting workers and the environment, and promoting sustainable economic development. •Recognizing that the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which links together countries that represent nearly 40 percent of global GDP, would advance these objectives, Canada and the United States are working to complete their respective domestic processes.” Trudeaumania: It was noticed that the actual substance of the meetings received less coverage as celebrity flavor of the visiting PM dominated throughout his tour. Greatly Admired: World Bank President Jim Kim saluted his work on climate change and Syrian refugees: “We’ve been watching with admiration,’’ he said, as they sat down to meet with officials and ministers at a boardroom table. Also, audiences repeatedly tried drawing him into discussing Donald Trump. He demurred, except to state his own views and share some stories from Canadian politics to suggest campaigning against Muslims can backfire. Conclusion: President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau will have to signal to officials their desire for resolution because the visit was about signaling mutual admiration and securing Mr. Obama’s goodwill to help Mr. Trudeau to advance his environmental and energy agendas abroad and at home. With the Republican win in the coming election, there is no guarantee of the current agreements between the two countries... ‘Super Woman’! By: Gulshan Alani Every woman is a special woman, (even Men) with a dozens of titles playing a role of a best obedient daughter, a wife, a loving Mother, a caregiver to a family, a teacher for her children, problem solver with a dozen jobs on hand mainly bringing up children the best ways. Such should be called ‘Super Woman’. Some Muslim and non-Muslim women in the 3rd world countries are going through the most difficult times due to the poverty, yet surviving with a smile, creating their own business of Sewing and dress embroidery etc. Who gets no financial help from the Gov. Such women are the most admired and are spe-
cial women.. Most admired Sister Shaeena Sidiqui speaking up with knowledge and wisdom based on Islamic Sharia. After studying Islam and the Quran came to know the Great Women of early century chosen by Allah-Creator; H. Khadija (RA) a business woman the wife of the Prophet SAWS, who stood by him when the first Divine Revelation was revealed that was also confirmed by her Catholic Uncle. Virgin H. Mary (RA) the Mother of Jesus (AS) full of ethics and moral values, went through a lot of difficulties in her young age and giving birth to Messiah Jesus (AS) with extreme pain but Allah advised her to eat ‘Dates’ from the Palm tree to relive the birth pain. The tragedy of a most gruesome torture of a Mother of Caliph H. Umar (RA) by the Pagans for accepting the One Creator of the Universe, but she refused to deny the Creator. Since my conversion to Islam I tested the diversity, liberation, obtained knowledge and wis-
dom of the ‘Scriptural religions’ given by the Creator, rejecting man-made religions, and considering all color humans as equal and free, most of all freedom from the slavery of human gods, and learned to prostrate to the only One the Creator of Universe who gives all free, whom I don’t need to pay cash for forgiveness of sins. In excitement of discovering the truth, I couldn’t conceal such truth from others. Learned Arabic Quran at home in 3-4 months and as a Montessori teacher loved teaching and so I started the Madrassah classes in Richmond Masjid with the help of Late Br. Asghar, we also organized monthly Islamic Exhibitions in the Libraries and the community centers, few Islamic TV shows with the help of Imam Zijad and Br. Asghar, though written and directed by me. The Radio show with the recitation of the Quran by a Shia young brother, and the lectures in the Universities invited by a most wonderful Christian teacher who knew more about
Islam than I did at that time, also took part in the exhibition ‘Spirit of Islam’ at the Anthropology U.B.C. I have come across many wonderful Muslims and non-Muslim women the ‘Human Rights Activists’ in BC as well as in other parts of the world, My admiration for those who are brave enough to speak up publicly, arrange rallies against any kind of wrong doings of anyone. After studying the Sharia-Divine law and the Gospel/Hadiths of Universal Messenger Muhammad SAWS, teaching the human rights and to be good Samaritan, I took the path of being a ‘Human Rights Activist’ and became the supporter of the non-Muslim groups: admire young lady Jenine Solonki of M.A.W.O. FF- Fire this time, run by young women and Men, also activists Sunera Thobhani UBC, Harsha Walia, etc. Also support the genuine humanitarian works of Doctors without Borders, Amnesty International, UNICEF, UNESCO etc.

Pakistan lodges protest with India after diplomats ‘denied permission’ to travel for T20
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday lodged a strong protest against the Indian government’s decision barring Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi from travelling to Kolkata to watch the March 19 Pak vs Ind World T20 standoff. The Foreign Office on Wednesday summoned Deputy High Commissioner of India J.P. Singh to lodge the protest after five diplomats and their family members were not allowed to travel to Kolkata for the cricket match. Acting Director General at the South Asia desk told J.P. Singh that the Indian government’s action was against dip-
lomatic norms and regarded it as highly regrettable. The Indian diplomat assured officials that Pakistan’s reaction would be conveyed to Indian authorities in New Delhi. A total of 17 applications were submitted by diplomats and officials, including Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi Abdul Basit, but only one diplomat was allowed to watch the Pakistan-Bangladesh match on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, Manzoor Ali Memon, told DawnNews over the phone. “Even that diplomat was unable to watch the match, as it is not possible to reach Kolkata in such a short time,” he said. The match between Pakistan and India, which was first scheduled at Dharamsala, was moved to Kolkata after security concerns. The Pakistan government then sought a “public guarantee” of security from Indian authorities before it sent players over for the international event. The next day, Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, assured ‘foolproof security’ to the Pakistan team for its match against India in writing. The Pakistani team arrived in India on Saturday evening amid tight security to take part in the World T20 series and will face off against the Indian cricket team in one of the most awaited games of the tournament at Eden Gardens on March 19.

Top court allows Musharraf to travel, name to be struck off ECL
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday ordered the removal of former president Pervez Musharraf’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL), allowing him to travel abroad for medical treatment.A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali, while hearing a pending federal government appeal against a 2014 Sindh High Court order removing Musharraf’s name from the ECL, upheld the ruling. The government’s appeal was rushed through by the government on June 14, 2014 on the apprehension that once Musharraf left the country, he may not return to stand trial under Article 6 of the Constitution. On June 23, 2014, the apex court had suspended the SHC judgment until it decided the pending appeal, and also formulated a set of questions to determine whether Musharraf could be allowed to leave Pakistan. The apex court had, in an earlier verdict on April 8, 2013, ordered the government to place Musharraf’s name on the ECL and ensure that he did not leave Pakistan until the court order was varied or modified. The five-member bench today gave the order after hearing the arguments of Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt, the petitioner representing the federal government, and Barrister Farogh Nasim, Musharraf’s counsel. “For reasons recorded separately, the [federal government’s] appeal has been dismissed,” the order said. However, the order will not preclude the federal government and

special court’s proceedings against him under Article 6 from passing any appropriate legal order for regulating his custody or movement, it said. Musharraf, who is facing a treason trial for clamping emergency in the country on Nov 3, 2007, has been ordered by a three-judge special court seized to record his statement on March 31.The bench today also disposed off Musharraf’s application seeking one-time permission to proceed abroad for the treatment of a spinal ailment that has afflicted him for some time now on the grounds that the petition was now infructuous. Kingdom refutes Canadian Cair Requests Apology From media reports on arms deal Trump For “Islam Hates Us” Comment
OTTAWA: The Saudi Embassy in Canada has responded to the spread of misleading information regarding a military deal signed between the Kingdom and Canadian companies.Recent Canadian publications spoke of a lack of impartiality of the Kingdom’s judiciary and its lack of independence in the country, information that some Canadian media groups exploited in order to stir up negative public opinion for political purposes. In a report published in a local publication, the embassy said in its statement: “The Embassy of Saudi Arabia notices the huge and sudden circulation of misleading information about the Kingdom which has been exploited by Canadian media and is aimed at stirring up the public opinion for political purposes. A number of Canadian media outlets contacted the Kingdom’s ambassador in Ottawa for clarifications on these issues and the embassy here wants to explain to the public that the government of Saudi Arabia signed a deal with the Canadian Trade Commission Service and the Canadian General Dynamics to provide the Kingdom with military equipment manufactured in Canada and military training.
“The embassy welcomed this partnership which reflects the commitment of Saudi Arabia to the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries.” The embassy added that although other offers were available for Saudi Arabia from two other factories, the deal was closed and sealed with General Dynamics Land Systems, in order to support the strong will of the two countries to increase the commercial exchange between the two sides, and to bolster the investment opportunities of the Saudi’s and Canadians. Responding to Canadian media remarks on the Kingdom’s judiciary, the embassy statement said: “The Saudi judiciary is characterized by independence, justice, transparency and insures equality and fairness for all citizens and foreigners on its soil. It will not accept, under any circumstances, any interference in its judiciary and internal affairs from other places. And as the Kingdom gives much respect to the judiciary systems in other countries, it expects that other countries also respect its own judiciary system.” Source: ARAB NEWS
Trump is under fire after sweeping “Islam hates us” statement on CNN. Anderson Cooper, the primary anchor of the CNN news show Anderson Cooper 360°, asked presidential frontrunner Donald Trump during an interview whether he believes that Islam is at war with the Western countries. Trump responded by saying that he thinks that Islam hates Western countries. He said that there is a tremendous and unbelievable hatred, however, he is not sure whether the hatred is held by Islam itself or by Islam extremists. Trump said that they have to get to the bottom of the issue. The interview was aired last Wednesday night. Following the interview, CAIR (Council on American–Islamic Relations), the biggest Muslim advocacy group in the United States, castigated Trump’s comments and demanded that Donald Trump apologize for his anti-Muslim remarks. Nihad Awad, the national executive director of CAIR, stated that Trump’s remarks are beneath that of a true leader and that sentiments like this will only serve to further divide the nation and the world. Ibrahim Hooper, the National Communications Director of CAIR said that outrageous remarks like this are already endangering the lives of ordinary Muslim people staying in America. He said they are receiving a lot of reports with regards to threats and assaults against Muslim American citizens as a result of the anti-Muslim comments and remarks made by Donald Trump. Replying to the question from Cooper with respect to whether the threat is from radical Islam or Islam itself, Trump said that it is very hard
to distinguish between the two since it is extremely difficult to identify who is who. To emphasize his point, he cited the terrorist attack at the San Bernardino Regional Center, California and the Paris terrorist attack. From the beginning of the presidential campaign, Trump has been very firm on his views regarding Islam. From his comments on banning the Muslims from entering the United States to going after the family of terrorists, from bringing back waterboarding to his latest “Islam hates us” comment, Trump has always been in the middle of some form of controversy or the other. His recent antiMuslim remarks even put his friend Rick Scott, Florida’s Republican Governor, in a tight position when MSNBC asked him whether the Muslims in Florida hates the United States. He sidestepped the question by answering in general that Florida welcomes all. CAIR is planning to challenge all the hatred growing towards Muslims with love and kindness. Source: World Religion News

Ecuador army plane crash kills all 22 onboard
QUITO: An Ecuadoran army plane crashed in the Amazon rainforest Tuesday, killing all 22 people on board, President Rafael Correa said.“There are no survivors,” Correa wrote on Twitter, several minutes after first posting news of the crash. “This is a tragedy.” He said the plane was carrying 19 paratroopers, two pilots and a mechanic. The plane went down in the eastern province of Pastaza, near the border with Peru. Defense Minister Ricardo Patino said he was on his way to the scene. “General Luis Castro is personally leading the operation (to recover remains). Everyone distressed by loss of our fallen brothers,”
Patino said on Twitter. The army said the plane was carrying soldiers for a parachuting master class when it crashed. “The plane is completely destroyed and the wings were scattered” across the area,” said Jesse Guevara, a student of the Pastaza aviation school who reached the crash site. In March 2015, an Ecuador air force school plane crashed in the southwestern coastal town of Salinas, killing two pilots. There have been four military helicopter accidents since 2009, among them a presidential aircraft purchased from India, killing three people. Source:dawn.com/
least one attacker and possibly two. Security officials told Reuters news agency that a female member of PKK was one of two suspected perpetrators. A police source said her severed hand had been found 300 metres from the blast site. The second suspected bomber was a male Turkish citizen with links to PKK, Reuters cited a Turkish security official as saying. There has not been any claim of responsibility for the bombing. Sunday’s attack was the second powerful blast to rock Ankara in three weeks. Witnesses said the blast set vehicles on fire and heavily damaged several buses. The explosion sent burning debris showering down over an area a few hundred metres from the justice and interior ministries, a top courthouse, and the former office of the prime minister. “These attacks, which threaten our country’s integrity and our nation’s unity and solidarity, do not weaken our resolve in fighting terrorism but bolster our determination,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement. Local broadcasters reported that an Ankara court ordered a ban on access to Facebook, Twitter and other sites in Turkey after images from the car bombing were shared on social media. Sunday’s attack comes only three weeks after a suicide car bombing in Ankara targeted buses carrying military personnel, killing 29 people. “We know how and when we will respond,” Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey’s prime minister, told Al Jazeera in an interview, referring
to the February attack. “Definitely, those who made this attack against our people will pay the price. But how and when, we will decide. And when it happens, everybody will see that Turkey can respond [to] any challenges and any attack against it.” A Kurdish armed group, the Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK), which is an offshoot of the outlawed PKK, claimed responsibility for that attack. TAK says it split from the PKK. Turkey has been fighting on multiple fronts. As part of a US-led coalition, it is battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), which has seized territory in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. It is also battling the outlawed PKK in its southeast, where a two-and-a-half-year ceasefire collapsed last July, prompting the worst violence since the 1990s. Turkey sees the unrest in its largely Kurdish southeast as deeply linked to events in northern Syria, where the Kurdish YPG militia had been seizing territory as it fights both ISIL and rebels battling President Bashar alAssad. Turkey fears those gains will stir separatist ambitions among its own Kurds and has long argued that the YPG and PKK have close ideological and operational ties. In its armed campaign in Turkey, the PKK has historically struck directly at the security forces and says it does not target civilians. ISIL has carried out at least four bomb attacks on Turkey since June 2015, including a suicide bombing which killed 10 German tourists in central Istanbul in January. Source: Al-Jazeera

Ottawa mulls greater scrutiny of border agency after detainee death
The government is considering an oversight body for the Canada Border Services Agency following the deaths of two immigrant detainees in CBSA custody last week. Rights and refugee groups have long called for independent oversight of the government agency and the creation of a civilianled body to investigate deaths in custody. After the two recent deaths, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale’s office said the issue will be examined as part of the government’s upcoming public consultations on Canada’s national security framework. “The government is examining how best to provide the Canada Border Services Agency with appropriate review mechanism,” said Mr. Goodale’s press secretary, Scott Bardsley. Mr. Goodale has said that he is open to considering an oversight body for the CBSA. Josh Paterson, executive director of the BC Civil Liberties Association, said the organization is “encouraged” that the government will consider improved scrutiny of the CBSA. “Any such mechanism has to be completely independent of CBSA,” said Mr. Paterson in a statement Tuesday. “At a minimum, it must be able to receive and deal with public complaints and complaints from third parties, initiate its own reviews and investigations of CBSA conduct even when there is no complaint, and include independent civilian investigation of critical incidents of harm or death involving CBSA officers.” The CBSA can hold people who are a flight risk, pose a threat to public safety or whose identities cannot be confirmed. According to the End Immigration Detention Network, a migrant advocacy group, 14 immigration detainees have died in the CBSA’s care since 2000, including the two deaths last week. “If immigration enforcement in the Ontario provincial prisons can’t keep people alive in their custody, they have no business jailing them,” said Syed Hussan, a spokesman for the group. The CBSA confirmed that two detainees died on March 7 and 13, but refused to disclose information about the individuals for privacy reasons. It said an investigation is under way and that the CBSA will “co-operate fully.”
Halton Regional Police confirmed Tuesday that 39-year-old Francisco Javier Romero Astorga was found dead by staff at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. Police said he was not alone in the cell when he was found. While police could not disclose the cause of death, they said it was not suspicious. According to the End Immigration Detention Network, Mr. Astorga was from Chile. The Chilean embassy in Ottawa referred calls regarding Mr. Astorga’s death to its consulate in Toronto, which did not return calls requesting for comment. Mr. Astorga’s death came less than a week after Melkioro Gahungu, a 64-year-old Burundian refugee, died in the Toronto East Detention Centre on March 7. Howard Crosner, honorary consul for Burundi in Ontario, said he received a call from the CBSA notifying him that Mr. Gahungu had died of suicide while awaiting deportation to Burundi. Mr. Crosner said the Burundian government has concerns about the treatment of Mr. Gahungu in CBSA custody. Mr. Gahungu was serving a sentence of four years and nine months for manslaughter for the 2009 stabbing death of his wife in Canada. Mr. Gahungu was convicted of manslaughter for the 2009 stabbing death of his wife in Windsor, Ont., and sentenced to four years and nine months. Mr. Crosner said he had served more than four years of his sentence and was detained on an immigration hold. Alex Neve, executive director of Amnesty International Canada, said something has to be done about the “glaring oversight gap when it comes to immigration detention in Canada.” Under the current system, there is no oversight body for the CBSA and complaints must be filed with the agency, raising questions about accountability. “As with any other police force, there are mistakes, there are concerns, there are human-rights violations that need to be investigated to ensure that the highest standards are kept,” said Mitch Goldberg, president of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers. “It’s not to say that necessarily CBSA was at fault, but … the public absolutely needs to know to ensure that there are not tragic mistakes being made.” Last year, the Senate national security committee called on the government to establish an oversight body and an “independent, civilian review and complaints body” for the CBSA. A 2015 United Nations report also raised concern about Canada’s immigration detention system and its lack of medical support for detainees with mental illness. Another study by the University of Toronto’s International Human Rights Program last year found that nearly one-third of all migrants detained across Canada are placed in facilities intended for the criminal population, constituting a violation of international human-rights law. Alberta has been devastated by the slumping oils and the latest jobs from Statistics Canada saw unemployment in the province rise from 7.4 per cent to 7.9 per cent. Compared to a year earlier, employment in Alberta decreased 21,200 net positions or 0.9 per cent, including a drop of 56,300 fulltime jobs or 2.9 per cent. Saskatchewan was also among the hardest hit provinces, losing 7,800 jobs. “In Alberta, consumer confidence was at its lowest point ever recorded in history in February,” said Julie Adès who analyses consumer confidence data for the Conference Board of Canada. “In Saskatchewan and Manitoba [consumer confidence] is at its lowest since 2009 at the height of the recession.” Overall Canada shed 2,300
net jobs in February compared to the previous month. Bricker says the Liberals will need to tackle the country’s bleak economic picture in their upcoming budget scheduled for March 22. “They’ve got a budget coming out this month and with economic confidence as low as it is the public’s going to be looking for a signal that there’s a plan to help turn this around and that everything is under control and we’re going to have better days ahead,” he said. “This is a new government people are going to be looking for a new approach.” The new data also shows confidence in the economy has even dropped below the 43 per cent mark in 2009 following the global financial crisis. Bricker says Canada was relatively insulat-
‘Momentum’ in Syria talks as Russia withdraws forces
The UN special envoy for Syria has declared as a “significant development” Russia’s withdrawal of forces from the war-torn country, saying it adds to the “momentum” of the ongoing talks in Geneva. Staffan de Mistura said on Tuesday that the ongoing refugee crisis facing Europe and the battle against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) also add some “sense of urgency” for government and rebel negotiators to support the peace process. “I do feel that there is a difference” in this talks, he said when asked why he thinks the negotiations in Geneva would succeed. He said the engagement of several countries, including the US and Russia, and the “unified Security Council” also led him to believe that while there will be “rocky times” ahead, the talks will “produce a momentum”. Still, de Mistura said there are several major issues that could pose roadblocks to the process, including the release of opposition detainees in Syrian prisons, and the delivery of humanitarian help to residents of Daraya outside of Damascus. At the beginning of the meeting, negotiators observed a minute of silence for the victims of the war, which marked its fifth year anniversary on Tuesday. Bassma Kodmani, opposition negotiator and member of the High Negotiations Committee, also called the day’s session as “constructive”. “There was some joy and pride for what people believe as the beginning of the freedom of the
Syrian people,” Kodmani said. But she also acknowledged that there are still no result on the issue of release of detainees, which she said “is not up for negotiation”. She said “daily executions” of at least 50 detainees continue in different prisons in Syria. As talks enter its second day in the Swiss city of Geneva, a Syrian opposition monitoring group is reporting intense air strikes in and around the historic town of Palmyra amid fighting between pro-government forces and ISIL. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there were casualties on both sides in Tuesday’s battles, without providing a precise figure. Al Manar TV, run by Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, says Syrian troops and their allies captured “Hill 900,” which is the highest in the area and overlooks Palmyra. Hezbollah is fighting alongside forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Palmyra, home to famed Roman ruins, has been under the firm control of ISIL since the armed group captured it in May last year. ISIL and the al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, known as the Nusra Front, are not part of a cease-fire that was brokered by Russia and the US and went into effect on February 27. The Syrian conflict has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced almost half the country’s prewar population of 23 million since it began in March 2011. The war has also led to a wave of refugees in Europe. Source: Al-Jazeera
Israel seizes 234 hectares of land in West Bank
Israel has grabbed one of the largest Palestinian land plots in the occupied West Bank, an Israeli watchdog has said in a statement following the revelation by the Israeli Army Radio. The anti-settlement NGO Peace Now said on Tuesday that the Israeli government has seized 234 hectares of land in an area south of Jericho on March 10. The group added that plans for expanding nearby Jewish settlements and building tourism and other commercial facilities in the area were already on Israel’s drawing board. “Instead of trying to clam the situation, the government is adding fuel to the fire and sending a clear message to Palestinians, as well as to Israelis, that it has no intention to work towards peace and two states,” the Israeli organisation said. Photos of a de facto Israeli confiscation notice were tweeted by the Palestine Liberation Organization. The notice listed 2,342 dunams (234 hectares) and carried the signature of an official identified on the map as Israel’s “supervisor of government property and abandoned property in Judea and Samaria”, Hebrew terms for the West Bank Such an appropriation would be the largest since August 2014, and larger than the 154 hectares area that Israel first said in January it planned to designate as government property near the Dead Sea. News of those plans drew international condemnation at the time. “The declaration, which is in fact a confiscation, was meant for the expansion of nearby settlements as well as for trade and tourism projects operated by the settlers,” Peace Now said in the statement. In October, Israel retroactively legalised about 800 homes in four settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to the interior ministry. They included 377 homes in the Yakir settlement, 187 in Itamar and 94 in Shilo in the northern West Bank, as well as 97 more in Sansana in the south of the occupied Palestinian territory. The international community regards all Jewish settlements in the West Bank as illegal. But the Israeli government makes a distinction between those it has authorised and those it has not. Settlements and outposts are seen as major stumbling blocks to peace efforts as they are built on land that Palestinians see as part of a future state. Source: Al-Jazeera
Canadian confidence in economy at its lowest in over 20 years: Ipsos poll
ed from the effects of the global recession in 2008 compared to the U.S. “At the time of the global recession people were anticipating that things were going to go a lot worse than they did in Canada,” he said. “[Canadians] were really expecting that there was going to be calamity here because of what was happening with the U.S, a mortgage meltdown and people losing their houses and, banks closing down all those kinds of things and that never happened here.” The new poll numbers suggest Canadians have a less than sunny outlook when it comes to the future of the economy. Thirty-five per cent of Albertans believe that the economy will be worse in six months than it is today. Source: Global News

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Mercy To Women
By Umme Maryam rryam ry yyam m|
“And We have sent you (O Muhammad) not but as a mercy for the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists.” (Al-Qur’ān – 21:107)
H
umanity was trapped in the depth of darkness and superstition as people were living animal lives. This was the social condition in which came Allah’s mercy in the form of
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him). He broke the chains and shackles that had enslaved humanity and removed the burden under which the humanity was being crushed. He brought in a revolution to free society from these chains and shackles with his wise sayings and practical deeds; and humanity was once again able to raise its head with pride. History tells us that before the advent of the Holy Prophet, women were treated as chat-
tel and slaves and in some tribes, newlyborn girls were buried alive. Women were treated as inferior species that had no legal existence. In such a primitive world, what the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) achieved was remarkable. The very idea that a woman could act as a witness or could inherit anything
ght ht w wa at all in her own right was unthinkable. We must remember that in Christian Europe, women had to wait until the 19th century before they had anything similar; even then, the law remained heavily favourable towards men. Western feminists have often denounced Islam with regards to the rights of women. They should perhaps look at the Christian traditions that are extremely negative to women. If Muslim women today reject some of the so-called freedoms that the West offers them, it is not due to any obstinacy but because the Western view of women and relationship between sexes is confused. While preaching equality and liberation, Western society, at the same time, exploits and degrades women in advertising, shamelessness and popular entertainment in a way that Muslims find offensive. Islam’s radical revolutionary support, gave women their due right and status in the days of ignorance… 1,400 years ago. Islam’s objective was and continues to be, to modernise our thinking, our living, our seeing, our hearing, our feeling and striving for the women’s upliftment and emancipation in the society. Islam believes in equality of men and women – ‘Equality’ does not mean ‘identicality’. In Islam, the role of a man and woman is complimentary, it is not conflicting. It is that of a partnership, it is not contradictory, so as to strive for supremacy. A world famous orator has broadly divided the women’s right in six categories: Spiritual Rights, Economical Rights, Social Rights, Educational Rights, Legal Rights, and Political Rights. Spiritual Rights Of Women The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) specifically by presenting the Qur’ān and by hadith proved the right to worship Allah granted by Him to women. In the Bible, pregnancy and child birth has been said to degrade the women and the labour pain is a sort of punishment. While the Blessed Prophet taught us the Quran in which pregnancy and child birth uplifts women. Equal Moral Duties for Men and Women: Both men and women have been granted equal rights and responsibilities. The only criterion for judgment in the Sight of Allah is ‘Taqwa’, ‘God consciousness’ or ‘righteousness’. Rather the woman has been given certain concession in Islam. If she is undergoing her menstrual period

or pregnancy, she does not have to fast. She can keep those fasts later on, when she is healthier. Economical Rights to the Women: Islam gave economical rights to women 1,300 years before the West. An adult Muslim woman can own, dispose of or disown any of her properties without consulting any one, irrespective of whether she is married or single. Women on Job: . A woman in Islam, if wishes to work, can work. There is no text in the Qur’ān or any authentic hadith which prevents or makes it prohibited for a woman to do any work, as long as it is not unlawful, as long as it is not within the purview of Islamic Shari’ah, as long as she maintains her Islamic dress code. Financial Security for Women: A woman in Islam has been given more financial security, as compared to man. Compulsory Marital Gift forWoman: When she gets married, she does not have any financial liabilities. Right to Inherit: Islam gave women the right to inherit, 14 centuries ago.Social Rights of Women in Islam: Broadly it can be categorised into four sub-headings. Social rights given to a daughter, to a wife, to a mother and to a sister. Islam prohibits female infanticide. The killing of female children is forbidden in Islam. The Blessed Prophet loved all his daughters a lot and in many hadiths has said that bringing up daughters correctly will earn a special place of nearness to him in the Paradise. Social Rights to Wife:
phh treated all the devil’. The Ble Blessed Proph Prophet his wives extremely well and showed us the same path. It is compulsory that man and woman both should agree to marry. No one - not even the father can force their daughter to marry against her wishes. Social Rights to a Mother: The Blessed Prophet taught us to pay special love and attention to our mothers and in a hadith he said
that 75% of the love and respect goes to the mother and 25% of the love and respect goes to the father. Educational Rights to a Woman: Imagine, 1400 years ago, when women were ill-treated and were only used as property, Islam asked women to be educated. Legal Rights to a Woman:
According to the Islamic law, men and women are equal. The Islamic Law protects the life and property of a man and woman both. Political Rights of a Woman: During the time of Caliph Umar a famous incident took place when a common lady made him take back his decision, which shows that ladies can have a say in politics and law making. Thus, we see that Allah sent His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) as All the previous civilizations, they have mercy to women. considered women to be an ‘instrument of

On February 27, The Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society held its annual fundraising dinner at the Royal King Baquet Hall in Surrey. Br. Mohammed Imran Ali kept the crowd entertained as the MC for this event. The goals were met and over $100,000.00 was raised for this charity as the guest key note speaker, Sheik Ala, delivered a very educational, thought provoking and encouraging presentation. A very informative video presentation, depicted the growth of the Muslim Food Bank into what is now the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society (“MFBCSS)”. Reflecting back to its humble beginnings in a garage, to their current location at 101 - 13085 115 Ave, Surrey, BC. The MFB, debuted in 2010 with one initiative “Food Distribution”, now under MFBCSS, there are several programs
Assistance Program, MFB Pages Business Directory and Others. TODAY, The MFBCSS assists approximately 2,000 clients under these programs and has more than 200 key volunteers and approximately 800 other volunteers that have participated in at least one event. However, as the community’s need for these services is growing on an expedited basis, the need for key volunteers is also growing. Present at this event, were your local members of parliament, namely: Randeep Sarai, Surrey North, Harry Bains, Surrey Newton; Bruce Ralston, Surrey Whalley, Acting Mayor Surrey Councillor, Vera leFranc, and Jinny Simms. As well as Brother, Bilaal Cheema. All spoke briefly about the need for organizations like MFBCSS and providing their appreciation and congratulations to MFBCS for its out-
standing services. The highlight of the evening was a letter of Acknowledgment and Congratulations, read by Br. Yousouf Barakat, Councillor and President of Canadian Arab Forum of BC from the Honourable Justin Trudeau. For any organization to be recognized in this way is surely a motivating factor to continue with this humbling work. Members of other organizations, Muslim and non-Muslim, also attended to show their support for the work and efforts of the MFBCSS.The Muslim Food Bank And Community Services Sincerely thanks all the attendees at the dinner and its supporters and invites all who are interested in volunteering for the sake of Allah to join our team. State option: PM Fiji Says
By:Repeka Nasiko (The Fijian Times online) PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says Government is exploring the option of providing financial assistance to individuals whose homes were destroyed by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston. Speaking at Nabukadra Village in the district of Nakorotubu, Ra, yesterday, he said discussions would be held with the Finance Ministry to find out if this was possible. He said the idea was to ensure those displaced by Severe TC Winston would be able to rebuild their homes as soon as possible and not wait for Government. “We don’t want people to be waiting for Government to come in to rebuild their homes because that could take a long time,”
Mr Bainimarama said. “What we are doing right now is finding ways to get help to people as quickly as possible and that includes rebuilding their homes. “One of the ideas we have is that if we could give a portion of money to people without homes and let them rebuild their homes. We will need to have a discussion with the Finance Ministry about that option.” Speaking to villagers in Ra, he also said it was easier and cheaper for Government to relocate coastline villages rather than reclaim land. “I’ve always talked about this when I talk about sea level rise and the best option right now for coastline communities is to move to higher ground. “Government can come in and facilitate discussions between villagers and landowners on the best place to relocate to and we can assist villagers in that relocation. “Another option is for those planning to build new homes to start building their homes on higher ground and move inland.” Nayavutoka Village headman Timoci Nabogibogi said two people drowned at the village during the Category 5 storm. “We are slowly rebuilding our homes but we have a long way to go,” Mr Nabogibogi said.

Indonesia leader calls on

• Jokowi: The OIC should be part of the solution, and not part of the problem J AKARTA, Indonesia: Indonesia’s president on Monday urged a summit of Muslim nations to be part of the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rather than part of the problem. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who heads the most populous Muslim nation, said the entire world is concerned by the deterioration of the situation in Palestine and criticized what he called Israel’s “unilateral and illegal policies.” Officials from 57 countries are meeting in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, for a special summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation that is focused on Palestine and Jerusalem. The Middle East quartet — consisting of the UN, Russia, US and European Union — and permanent members of the UN Security Council are also represented. “The OIC should be part of the solution, and not part of the problem,” Jokowi said in opening remarks to the summit. “If the OIC cannot be part of the solution to Palestine, then the OIC becomes irrelevant.” Israel says a recent surge in violence is the result of a Palestinian campaign of lies and
ians say it stems from frustration from nearly a half century of Israeli military rule. For decades, international efforts have failed to work out a lasting comprehensive agreement on the core issues of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, including Jerusalem, borders, the fate of Palestinian refugees and security arrangements. Talks ground to a halt three years ago, and efforts to revive them have stalled, particularly over Palestinian demands that Israel announce a freeze in construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which they claim as part of a future state along with Gaza. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said his country doesn’t waver in its belief that what Palestine needs is independence and the right to determine its own affairs. “The complexity of the problems continues to emerge in the Middle East, but the condition of Palestinians has always been a concern for Muslims in the world. Resolving the Al Quds issue can create peace in the region,” he said, using a Palestinian name for Jerusalem. Among the leaders at the Jakarta meeting is Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes allegations linked to the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region. Indonesia is not an ICC member state.

MIRACLE SPECIAL AT 105TH INT. WOMEN DAY DR. RIFFAT NAGRA
It gives me a great sense of joy and pleasure to know that I can be somewhat of a role model and influence for younger Muslim women, as I myselff had the great fortune of being influenced d by a very special lady who I share the same name with ‘Riffat Hanif, ’ and given the title ‘daughter of Islam’ by the Pakistani government in response to her contributions to Islamic literature was the lady who taught me the Qur’an and ignited a flame of hard work, dedication and passion. All the poked holes in pillow cases and oranges from all my daydreaming of pretending to be a medical doctor as a little girl came to a reality through the hard work Aunt Riffat instilled in me. From my initial studies all the way throughout Lahore College for Women University to Nishtar Medical School, My professional training started in a city (Edmonton) in 1980. Now since many years I am practicing as a family physician in Surrey with my husband Dr. Salim Nagra. And continue participating in many local associations.

What Is Myeloma?
In our larger bones we have bone marrow, the area in the center of each bone where white cells, red cells, and platelets grow. Multiple myeloma occurs when one type of white blood cell, a plasma cell, reproduces without stopping and causes damage to other organs. In most patients, myeloma is found in more than one location and is called multiple myeloma. Normally these cells would create a wide variety of antibodies to support our immune system; instead the cancerous plasma cells take up more and more room in the bone marrow cavity, which leaves less and less room for normal marrow cells. Instead of millions of different antibodies that can effectively protect the patient from infection, myeloma cells make only one type of antibody and thus leave the patient vulnerable. These myeloma cells can also
push their way into the hard outer layer, the cortex, of bones and this can make those bones particularly prone to break. In fact many people realize they have multiple myeloma when they break a bone from minimal activity such as bumping into something or picking up a gallon of milk.
Multiple Myeloma Prognosis Determining Prognosis Additionally, myeloma cells can make so many antibodies or misshapen antibodies that they clog the kidney’s filtration system The prognosis of multiple myeloma is usually based on the existence of different signs, symptoms, and circumstances. Multiple myeloma prognosis as well as survival rates have improved due to myeloma research. The prognosis of myeloma is also dependent on the stage of the disease as determined by the results of diagnostic
testing. Survival rates are sometimes used by doctors to explain a patient’s prognosis; however, many patients prefer to avoid knowing about myeloma survival rates when learning of their prognosis. In arriving at prognosis for multiple mye-
loma, several clinical and laboratory findings provide important information. These prognostic indicators help determine how fast the tumor is growing, the extent of disease, the biologic make-up of the tumor, the response to therapy, and the overall health status of the individual. Prognostic indicators may also help determine whenmultiple myeloma treatment should begin, and which treatment is best according to a person’s individual risk for relapse.
Multiple Myeloma Stages The stages of multiple myeloma are used to indicate the degree to which the cancer has progressed. Doctors use the results of diagnostic testing to determine the stage of myeloma. While there are many factors that affect myeloma survival rates, the stage of myeloma helps doctors determine the prognosis, or the likely outcome of the disease. Moreover, staging myeloma is important for developing the most effective treatment plan.
How is Multiple Myeloma Staged? The international staging system (ISS) is the most commonly used myeloma staging system. It is based on two blood test results, beta 2-microglobulin (ß2-M) and albumin. ß2-M is a protein that indicates the extent of disease and albumin in an indicator of overall general health. The Durie-Salmon Staging System is an older staging system that is sometimes still used. With the Durie-Salmon Staging System, the stage of myeloma is determined by four measurements: the amount of hemoglobin and the level of calcium in the blood, the number of bone lesions, and the production rate of M protein. Stages are then further divided according to kidney function. Increasingly, physicians are relying less on the Durie-Salmon staging system and more on biologically relevant markers as prognostic indicators when making treatment choices. Staging also plays a role in the classification of multiple myeloma. There is somewhat of an overlap between the various myeloma classifications and myeloma stages from both systems. For example, both patients with smoldering myeloma and patients with Stage I disease do not require immediate treatment, and patients with Stage II and III disease have active, symptomatic myeloma.
Multiple Myeloma Life Expectancy The life expectancy of multiple myeloma patients typically varies on several factors. Multiple myeloma life expectancy may be based on prognostic information provided by multiple myeloma lab tests. Doctors may also look at median survival rates by stage of the cancer to help determine life expectancy. These prognostic indicators help determine how fast the tumor is growing, the extent of disease, the biologic make-up of the tumor, the response to therapy, and the overall health status of the individual. Determining the levels of these prognostic tests early in the course of the disease is important, as it provides a baseline against which disease progression and response to therapy can be measured. Many tests can be performed routinely in any laboratory, whereas others are performed only in specialized laboratories or a research setting. Sourcs: http://www.mmore.org

spent sitting on my couch, watching Netflix, but sometimes that’s just not enough. So make a challenge! Try something new every day of break. One day, go to the beach. The next day, have a movie marathon. OR, everyday try a new local coffee spot. You never know who you might meet and what memories you might make.
Take Photos You do not need to be a professional photographer to have cute Instagram pictures that we all wish for. Find a new place to watch the sunset and take photos of it, noting the times and location. Been dying to see a sunrise? Pick a day and make a pledge that you WILL get up early enough to see the beauty of the new day.

Starbucks or say hi to that cute guy that works at the cafe you and your friends go to every Sunday. This is the time to have a good time, but remember that the end of the school year is approaching and you still have to keep it together once the break is over. So relax, catch up on all your favorite shows, go on some adventures. Enjoy the break before the countdown to summer begins!
Alternative Spring Break Trips You can find alternative spring break trips through your school or through other charitable organizations. You’ll get to travel and impact the lives of others in positive ways. That’s what we call a win-win, folks. Here are some popular alternative spring break programs for students: Donate By “donate, we’re not referring to funds (though that’s great, too). What we really mean is donating your time and efforts to a cause you care about. You can organize fundraisers, drives and other events to help make a difference without spending a cent of your own dough (which you’ll likely need for tuition payments).
Advocate for a Cause Speak out about causes you’re passionate about! Educate others on your cause and
how they can help make a difference. People often care, but don’t know what they can do to help. This spring break, take on the task of becoming the link between the two.
Volunteer Locally You don’t need to travel abroad to make a difference – most charitable organizations are constantly in need of reliable and hard-working volunteers. Find a cause that suits you and contact them, asking where you might be able to help. Make sure you let them know if you have talents they will find valuable – they won’t know unless you speak up!

Healing Gardens A beautiful way to cultivate wellness
By: Bev Yaworski Gardens are more than just a patch of flowers and veggies. Research shows that spending time in a garden can nourish our souls and boost our physical health, particularly for those undergoing medical treatment. Find out how to create your own treasured space for tranquillity and healing—either on your own or with your community. It’s no secret to gardeners that a garden can be a magical, healing space. Some gardens are being created specifically to promote healing. The positive health effects and curative gains associated with spending time in these gardens include enhanced well-being— physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Connect with nature Gardens link us with nature. Exposure to the natural world is connected with a reduction in stress and a promotion of feelings of relaxation.“Connecting with the natural world through gardening brings about positive psychological and physical changes that improve quality of life,” says Patricia Fleming, the executive director of Earthwise Society, a BC-based environmental group.“Research points to the value of connecting to the natural world for healing and mental health,” she adds. “Gardening is ultimately a hopeful activity. A planted seed leads to the expectation and hope that one day it will provide beauty or food. This relates to a key concept of recovery, the phenomenon of hope.”
Grow, heal, smile Research reveals the therapeutic benefits of gardens. Studies show associations between experiencing nature and better healing, a reduction in the use of medication, shorter hospital stays—and even diminished mental strain among family members and health care staff. Gardens also provide opportunities forexercise and movement outdoors. Healing gardens are being integrated into health care facilities such as hospitals, hospices, seniors’ care homes, and rehabilitation centres. These green settings can produce results for people of good health and for those struggling with illness. Healthy individuals may experience states of restful meditation and tranquility, while those who are unwell may undergo restfulness and an easing of symptoms. Restorative horticultural spaces offer a deeply calming or even rousing encounter.
Designed to heal Halifax landscape designer Rosmarie Lohnes, owner of Helping Nature Heal, describes healing gardens as “restorative spaces which engage us in a more subtle way. They may be beautiful perennial and shrub gardens, or a peaceful setting for contemplation. Nature observance gives many folks a sense of place, hope, and aspiration for a future yet to come.”She explains that healing gardens can easily be designed to accommodate any number of considerations, “so that passive exposure to nature can have its healing effects without the scope of physical activity, which is especially great for those with limited mobility or health issues such as knee and hip replacements.” “Soft floor coverings, moss, or wood chips reduce compaction on aging joints and allow for softer landings for toddlers venturing into these spaces. A sense of restoration to one’s senses is often regarded as the most meaningful component to gardens and landscapes.”
Canadians to enjoy.
Port Moody, BC “The Labyrinth Healing Garden in Pioneer Memorial Park, across the street from the Crossroads Inlet Centre Hospice in Port Moody, BC, was designed as a peaceful haven to exercise the mind, body, and soul,” says Janice Hansen, manager of hospice programs and administration. “Created in partnership with the City of Port Moody, it’s a way to enhance the hospice bereavement services and create a place for the community to experience nature’s healing. This labyrinth is a place for the mind, body, and spirit to relax and rejuvenate. It’s a natural stress buster.” Opened January 2010, this special labyrinth design is an age-old method employing a single non-branching path leading to a centre—symbolizing life’s journey. The impressive arbour entry features a dragonfly sign engraved with the name and logo of the hospice. In addition, seven garden benches encourage people to walk, sit, and appreciate the view. Wheelchair accessible, the site’s paving stones have inspirational messages with words inscribed, such as dignity, choice, and compassion. A unique community program emerged here—fullmoon walks.
Edmonton, Alberta In 2013, an outdoor healing garden launched at the Cross Cancer Institute. Bernard Tong, project manager of Alberta Health Services, describes it as a “unique sanctuary of peace, strength, and healing.” The garden showcases a pergola, trees, shrubs, seasonal flower beds, and circular bench seating for patients, staff, and visitors. Conceived by the Institute’s Volunteer Association commemorating 50 years of service, the site includes a stunning monument engraved with 50 hands. Pavers with words of inspiration are part of the design. Of extra interest is a wall to display artwork created by cancer patients. Organizers proudly overcame design challenges by transforming a nondescript lawn near uninspiring driveways and parking lots into a place of beauty and comfort. Garden organizers also emphasize healthy nutrition by incorporating edible plants and herbs. “We planted lettuces, peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, beans, herbs like mint, and thyme, and others,” says Laflèche. Some other plants that form this garden include bee balm ,echinacea ,black currants ,pear trees.
Create your own healing garden
According to Kristin Crouch, an experienced gardener with a diploma in horticulture from the University of Guelph, “it’s easy to create a small space in the garden to enjoy a quiet moment away from everything. By adding a few simple features to your garden, you can make it your oasis.”She offers the following ideas to create your own healing garden: Add a sitting area to your garden. Surround the sitting area with clusters of brightly coloured flowers and herbs in pots. Consider installing an arbour to watch birds perch.Plant climbing vines to grow over your arbour. For year-round interest, plant hardy shrubs, such as Harry Lauder’s walking sticks or hydrangeas, in large containers or in the ground. Use plants that give more than one season of interest. In fall, plant perennials such as Tulipa tarda, a species of tulip known for its bright yellow and white blooms, under shrubs.Follow up with summer plantings of annuals such as petunias, heliotropes, and dusty millers for a colourful Canadian healing gardens Healing gardens are sprouting up across display. Consider adding a water feature such Canada, all with the same goal—to promote as a bird bath or fountain. The sound of waa relaxing and healing environment for ter is soothing and beneficial to wildlife.
‘Netflix of mobility’ pitched for Vancouver
By: Michael Mui A Finnish company’s idea to create what its CEO calls the “Netflix of mobility” by charging users a flat monthly fee to use any type of transportation service — be it taxi, bike share or transit — is raising eyebrows locally. MaaS Finland CEO Sampo Hietanen was in Vancouver last week as part of his search for North American cities ready to have a single subscription-based transportation app pay for all available mobility services. “Let’s say $150 CND, and I were to give you full access to everything, including taxis, public transit, everything, rental cars, trains even. That sounds wild, but given bigger masses it’s quite doable,” he said. “Like in mobile business, first we have packages — that include 200 kilometre of taxis a month, this much of public transport, this much of Car2Go ... given the assumption we would be going into higher penertrations — up to 5-10% of the population, you can make money out of this. ”Hientanen said he envisions an app where users would have the option to access the closest or preferred choice of transportation whether it’s the cab waiting around the corner or a direct SkyTrain hop from downtown to Surrey, or to choose the most convenient or fastest option, where the app would plot a route for the user based on pre-sets.
“The idea of this is not to go start competing with public transit or taxis, it’s actually to make the best use out of the things we actually have and provide something that would probably — or hopefully — be comparable with the ownership of cars,” he said. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, who was present for Hietanen’s pitch and chairs the Metro Vancouver board of directors, said he likes the idea. “If you share all the information that’s one thing. That would be a first step. I would think it has to be a regional entity to bring that together. It could be TransLink, or a consortium of all transportation providers getting together as a new organization,” he said. “If I went from A to B and the first leg was taxi and the second was TransLink and the third was ride sharing … three organizations want money out of that. Technology can probably solve that, but in the short term you could see how that’s a challenge.”Moore said the region requires more service providers, particularly in suburban areas, to make something like this work, as alternative transportation options are already abundant in city cores, but options are fewer the farther you go. Life Lessons!
By:Shabnam Khan Family Counsellor Are you being tormented by regret, a missed opportunity, a perceived mistake, a disappointment, or past hurts? Maybe something awful was done to you or perhaps you did something horrible to someone else. By focusing on bad events in the past, you’re only hurting yourself more. Feel that tightness in your neck and shoulders? Hear that nagging, negative voice in your head? Imagine the relief if that was gone. Imagine how much better you’d feel if you’d get over what happened and move on with your life…… 1. Name it. What is it that’s pulling you down? If there’s more than one thing, make a list as fast as you can. Over what regrets, disappointments and perceived mistakes are you beating yourself up? Often we start blaming ourselves for every little thing that goes wrong in our lives. We constantly start blaming or punishing ourselves instead of finding solutions to correct those mistakes and start to work according. We should rather take it as a learning tool! 2. Dispute it. Take some time to give a reality check to each item. For example: “I blew my chance to sell my screenplay and now I never will. How could I have made such a stupid mis-
TOPICS
take!” might be more realistically stated as “I missed a great chance to sell my script but that wasn’t the only possible opportunity to do so. If I took some specific actions now, I could create new, possibly better opportunities to sell by script. A wellwritten screenplay is always a hot commodity. It could be that I wasn’t really ready before but now I’m much more confident and therefore in a much stronger position to sell my script. Besides, I’ve since revised the screenplay a few more times so I know it’s considerably better than what I had to offer earlier.” Take it to your advantage! 3. Let go. If you’ve been stuck on a past mistake, regret or disappointment: Discard it. Forget it and Move On! If you find yourself thinking about it, stop. Reach for a better, kinder thought -- shift your attention elsewhere. If you have a little voice in your head that delights in scolding you, you may even have to say “stop it!” More importantly, forgive yourself and anyone else involved. More Importantly - make a plan of action that will give you peace. This might mean abandoning an earlier plan and trying something completely different…or you may devise a new path to accomplish the same end. The key is to take action to make you feel better. Keeping things the way they are, complaining over something you can’t change, is not a healthy choice. Learning from your mistakes and doing things differently is the key to being successful in life!! For More Info: shabnam@skcounselling.ca
“Sincerity is NeverWasted”! By Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker Yes. Truth can never be hidden forever, it always comes out in open light and sincerity is never lost. We should be always truthful and sincere with ourselves and others. As for parents, dear friends this is must. Our children always sense that. When parents are not truthful and lie, children catch it. When parents are sincere half of the lessons are already taught to children. They can sense the concept of right and wrong, the importance of efforts made by their parents. Easy way out Is lying and deceiving an easy way out? No, on the contrary its the most difficult and expensive way out. We as parents pay the price in many ways throughout our life. Our children have a very sharp radar, even when they are very young they might not understand or know many things but they can always sense the happenings and right and wrong feelings. The parents who lie or misrepresent something even in day to day life, how can they expect their children not to do so? When we talk nicely on the face and pass not so nice remarks behind the back of our relatives, friends or people, have we ever thought how
disturbing and confusing this type of double standards are!! That does not mean we say out loudly the things at face value and express our opinion about the person. But that means we improve ourselves first to have a kind, positive attitude think and then form an opinion. The right choice of words at right times changes the whole impact. Poor Parents Life is not bed of roses for parents too. They have their share of troubles, they fight on many fronts. They are also humans with strength and weaknesses. What is to done is to be done The parents, youth and children when they take steps together do justice to their roles and thrive for better life and relationships. Surely all will be well. All-female pilot crew touches down in Saudi Arabia
A trio of pilots has made history by becoming Royal Brunei Airlines’ first all-female flight crew - and they’re gaining attention thanks to the destination they flew to on their inaugural flight together. While it was a landmark moment for the carrier, the flight was also significant because the pilots landed at an airport in Saudi Arabia – a country where women are banned from driving a car. Captain Sharifah Czarena and senior first officers Sariana Nordin and Dk Nadiah Pg Khashiem were behind the controls of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flight BI081 from Brunei to Jeddah.Captain Sharifah Czarena and senior first officers Sariana Nordin and Dk Nadiah Pg Khashiem were behind the controls of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flight BI081 from Brunei to Jeddah Royal Brunei assigned three female pilots to the 24 February flight as it celebrated Brunei National Day, which marks the state’s full independence from the UK in 1984. Czarena trained at the Cabair Flying School at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and operates a number of the state-owned carrier’s major routes. In December 2013, she became the first-ever Royal Brunei pilot to fly out of London Heathrow in its flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliner. All-female crews have become a trend in recent months. Last week a number of
airlines, including Air Canada and Air India, operated long-haul flights staffed by female pilots to coincide with Women of Aviation Worldwide Week. Captain Sharifah Czarena trained at the Cabair Flying School at Cranfield, Bedfordshire. Royal Brunei, the national flag carrier of Brunei, a sovereign state on the north coast of Borneo, said it has taken steps to encourage more women to pursue careers that are traditionally dominated by men. It said it has introduced an aircraft engineer apprentice programme for both men and women. The occasion came just over three years after Captain Czarena became the first female captain of a flag carrier in Southeast Asia. She told The Brunei Times in 2012: “Being a pilot, people normally see it as being a male dominant occupation.” “As a woman, a Bruneian woman, it is such a great achievement. It’s really showing the younger generation or the girls especially that whatever they dream of, they can achieve it,” said the captain, who completed her initial pilot training at the Cabair Flying School in Cranfield. Royal Brunei Airlines is committed to getting more women into the industry as it currently offers an Engineering Apprentice programme to both males and females.

24 SPORTS Title-favourites India fail New Zealand’s spin test Jamadi Ut Thani 10, 1437 March 18, 2016
NAGPUR: New Zealand’s spinners became unlikely heroes on Tuesday, leading their side to a stunning 47-run victory over favourites India in the World Twenty20 opening group match in Nagpur. The Kiwis stumbled to 126 for seven after electing to bat first, but their slow bowlers bamboozled India who could manage just 79 runs in 18.1 overs — their lowest ever score in T20 cricket on home soil. Their previous lowest score at home was 92 against South Africa in Cuttack last year. The spin trio of Mitchell Santner, Nathan McCullum and Ish Sodhi combined forces to keep New Zealand’s unbeaten T20 record against India intact — the Kiwis have now won five T20s in six meetings. Man of the match Santner (4-11) bowled exceptionally well on a slow track to register the best bowling figures by a New Zealander in T20 cricket. “There was a bit of spin out there, they bowled well to keep us to 120, that was below par, but we got stuck in and I’m delighted with the win,” said Santner. India, who have been firm favourites to win the title, were never in the chase after losing their openers early and, with the exception of Virat Kohli (23), none of the Indian batsmen could come up with any answers to the inspired Kiwi bowling attack. Kohli, during his 27-ball stay, offered some resistance on a slow track, but the introduction of Sodhi spelt the end for the star batsman. Chasing a wildish leg-spinner, Kohli was caught behind as the packed stadium was stunned into silence with the writing clearly on the wall. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni then tried hard to dig India out of their hole but his valiant run-
a-ball 30 made little difference in the end. Earlier, hard-hitting Corey Anderson hit an uncharacteristically slow 34-run knock to help New Zealand improve their plight after being reduced to 61 for four. A dramatic first over from off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin saw Martin Guptill smash a six on the very first ball of the match only to lose his wicket on the next, setting the tone for an exciting T20 extravaganza. The spin-fast combination of Ashwin and Ashish Nehra deployed by Dhoni worked in India’s favour as the Kiwis were left stuttering with skipper Kane Williamson also departing for single figures. Anderson, whose 42-ball stay included just three boundaries, then stuck around with Ross Taylor and Santner to counter the Indian bowlers. India, determined to become the first team to win the World T20 title twice, didn’t put a foot wrong and backed their bowlers’ effort with some clean fielding that included two run outs. In the end, Luke Ronchi’s unbeaten 11-ball 21 gave some respect to the total, which in the end proved enough to make an opening impression in the sixth edition of the tournament. Pakistan face Bangladesh at Kolkata while England meet West Indies at Mumbai in the two group matches on Wednesday.
Batsmen fire Pakistan to 55-run victory Pakistan’s batting line-up, which had misfired frequently in recent matches, finally came together in their first match of the World T20 2016 to overpower Bangladesh by 55 runs. Fifties from Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez, and Shahid Afridi’s 19-ball 49 propelled Pakistan to 201 for 5, a total which proved too steep for a side that had beaten them in their last two T20I encounters. This was only the second time Pakistan scored more than 200 in a T20 international, and the previous instance - in April 2008 - was also against Bangladesh. Pakistan opted to bat first and, right from the start, kept their foot on the gas. They took 18 runs in three separate overs and failed to hit a four or a six in only two overs in their innings - the 9th and 14th - bowled by Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman. Pakistan’s opening pair of Shehzad and Sharjeel Khan was the fourth the side have tried out in T20Is this year, and Sharjeel set the tone, smashing two sixes and a four off Al-Amin Hossain in the second over. Sharjeel fell in the next over to Arafat Sunny but Hafeez walked in and found his groove immediately, with a straight six down the ground off his second ball. Shehzad, who had struck a serene cover drive off Taskin Ahmed in the first over, then pushed the same bowler through midwicket, before pasting Sunny over extra-cover. His first three fours were pleasing shots, even as Hafeez blasted boundaries down the ground. By the end of the Powerplay, Hafeez and Shehzad had similar scores before
the latter pulled away and raced to his fifty off 35 balls. Shehzad fell in the 14th over, pulling Sabbir to the deep midwicket fielder for 52 off 39 balls with eight fours. His wicket ended a 95-run, second-wicket partnership that, through a combination of big hits and clever strike rotation, did not let the Bangladesh fielders relax. Afridi promoted himself to No 4 to take advantage of the start. After Hafeez had reached his fifty in the 15th over, bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza, Afridi smacked two fours and a six off consecutive balls to produce an 18-run over. The pair took another 18 runs off Al-Amin’s next over, with Hafeez striking two fours and Afridi a straight six. Hafeez fell for 64 off 42 balls, immediately after striking his seventh four. He was caught brilliantly by Soumya Sarkar at the deep midwicket boundary. The fielder grabbed the ball close to the boundary rope; the momentum took him over the line so he lobbed the ball in the air, came back on to the field and completed the catch. The agile effort was the only solace for Bangladesh in the first innings. Source: Cricinfo

77th Pakistan Resolution Day – 23rd March 1940
By: Farhan Imaan INCPak The people of Pakistan celebrate the 23rd of March, every year, with great zeal and enthusiasm, to commemorate the most outstanding achievement of sub-continent Muslims who passed the historic Pakistan Resolution on this day at Minto Park, Lahore in 1940. The Lahore Pakistan Resolution also known as Karar darey Pakistan was indeed a landmark in the history for the Muslims of the sub-continent. Before this, the Muslims of sub-continent had no goal and no future in view and Muslim politics remained in the hands of the individuals with conflicting interests and inclinations. As soon as Lahore Resolution was passed by the Muslim League, the Hindu press started criticising the Muslim League and declared this resolution as Pakistan Resolution. The personality of Mohammad Ali Jinnah was also criticised by the Hindus and their prominent leaders. Mohammad Ali Jinnah got nationwide popularity after Lahore Resolution, because the Muslims of India had a lot of expectations from him and he was the only source of inspiration for the Muslims. The All India Muslim League played a vital role in the creation of Pakistan in the year 1940. Muslim league had become a stronger political party for the Muslims of Indo-Pak Subcontinent, under which the Muslims were struggling for a separate homeland for them. The great leader of the Muslims, Mohammad Ali Jinnah by the time had become
the lining symbol of Muslim unity and Muslim politics and the Muslims had so completely centred on him that he had become almost an institution in himself.
On March 13 Consul General of Pakistan Hon Dr. Muhammad Tariq hosted a lunch in the honor of His Excellency Mr. Tariq Azim Khan, High Commissioner of Pakistan in Canada. The local business community, Pakistani associations’ members and media were invited at his residence in Vancouver. Consul Mr. Fahad Amjad welcomed the guests and Dr. Muhammad Tariq introduced everyone to Mr. Khan and thanked for his second visit in British Columbia. After meeting with everyone, Mr. Tariq Azim
Khan said that the community should work together and try to enter in main stream politics. In BC, both Pakistani Associations should take interest in Canadian politics at the grassroot level and if you will make at least 1000 members of in any Canadian political party that represents you, then Pakistani community will gain strength and the party leaders will value your strength. He also said that Pakistani community should field their candidates from the beginning and not at eleventh hour during elections at City,

The resolution which was passed at the session reads: “No constitutional plan would be workable or acceptable to the Muslims unless geographical contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary. That the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in majority as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India should be grouped to constitute independent states in which the constituent units shall be
even remembers what he said and what Pakistan should’ve been by now. In 1960 ” Pakistan was about to be the Asian Tigers ” one of the leading South Asian Country in the region but after the fall of Dhaka everything changed. Until 1973 There was no Authentic Constitution in the country, although 1958 Constitution existed but don’t know who and how practiced it. What 1973’s constitution changed for an ordinary man in Pakistan !NOTHING until now there is no sign of Justice. Don’t Blame the youth for the wrong decisions and plannings, Government is busy somewhere else while distributing Laptops and Loan with Interest which is Haram in Islam for the Youth. Still we have the chance to Save Pakistan from these Corrupt people in Power, You and I make the difference, trust me, we live and die for our motherland and we have that same spirit to lead our country proudly, InshaAllah we will succeed. We are determined, United , Committed and Devoted to serve our People, We have no difference and this day is very important for us, we are Thankful of everyone those who Anticipated in Pakistan Resolution in 1940, Without it, we wouldn’t had this beautiful land known as Pakistan ” No matter where you go in Pakistan, You feel like Home” because it is. – Take Care of Pakistan and Quaid’s Dream Where is Quaid’s Pakistan? Why only Youth Cares and nobody else come true…. Love Live Pakistan .
autonomous and sovereign”. It further reads, “That adequate, effective and mandatory safeguards shall be specifically provided in the constitution for minorities in the units and in the regions for the protection of their religious, cultural, economic, political, administrative and other rights of the minorities, with their consultation. Arrangements thus should be made for the security of Muslims where they were in a minority”. The Resolution turned down the concept of United India and recommended the creation of an independent Muslim state consisting of Punjab, N. W. F. P (now Khyber Pakhtonkhwa), Sindh and Balochistan in the northwest, and Bengal and Assam in the northeast. The Majority of Pakistani specially The Youth is Patriot and follow the footsteps of Quaid-e-Azam, but unfortunately Pakistani Government time to time messed up the idealogy of Pakistan completely. In 1940 The muslims decided their destiny hence not for the way it is in the present 2014, everything is totally opposite and messed up completely. Last Year Balochistan Liberation Army ( BLA ) Blown off Quaid’s Residency. Sad and Shameful for the Government, Only one gaurd as assigned to take care of this treasure, that’s not all you won’t believe what’s happening at Mazar-e-Quaid, Quaide-Azam always spoken about the Justice but that does not exist anymore for the ordinary Pakistani at all.
Visit of Pakistan’s High Commissioner leads to commitments from Pakistani Canadian Associations Provincial and Federal level. HE. Mr. Khan asked the community about their concerns about consulates of Pakistan in Canada. In efforts to promote unity amongst local Pakistani community, Mr. Khan had Presidents of both major Pakistani associations, Mr. Haroon Khan of Pakistan Canada Association and and Mr. Syed Farrukh of Pakistani Canadian Cultural Associations, take oath that they will commit to do joint events for any Pakistani National Days and if there is a need to do separate
events, Directors and members from both associations will be encouraged to participate in each other’s events. The community cheered for this step by High commissioner and Consul General. At the event, Mr Farooq Rai presented his book “Pakistan to Canada A Journey” to High Commissioner of Pakistan. Lunch was served by BBQ Village in Surrey.
