Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will offer an apology in the House of Commons on May 18 almost 102 years after the Komagata Maru incident, where the government of the day turned away more than 300 Indians seeking a better life in Canada. In 2008, then-prime minister Stephen Harper apologized to the Sikh community in Surrey, B.C., but many demanded he make a formal apology in the Commons. The Panama papers reveal only one law firm involved in the ongoing unfair play for evading taxes, yet an unbiased reporting can highlight it all, certainly. In fact, there are several companies that provide such wealth-hiding services. That is how rich people and the multinationals are actively benefitting from the available offshore tax saving tips/schemes all across the Globe. Like all others, Americans and the Canadians are upset about the legal yet unethical practice of their multinationals’ addiction of investing offshore for evading taxes. Making fortunes in Canada, but taking them offshore to avoid paying taxes again is a popular thing, of course! Thus, immorality is a painful reality despite its legitimacy under the deficient law. Consequently, the middle class suffers through paying more tax for compensating the loss due to the tax-stolen by the rich. Obviously, funds are needed for stable exchequer to provide for services and public education, indeed. Fortunately, most of the wealthiest people in Canada and other countries tend to leave, as taxes increase due to tax avoidance schemes (loopholes). Notice has to taken by the lawmakers of massive money laundering through Canadian, Australian and American real estate. Foreigners use shell companies or proxies to acquire condos in Sydney, Vancouver and Toronto, with the help of local banks, developers and brokers. These players have made housing unaffordable in these cities in particular. Real thugs: Believe or not, the most powerful lobby is the off-

E D I T O R I A L

shore h lobby including banks, accountants, lawyers, money managers. It seems as if they are involved in rewarding the politicians for not bringing in reforms designed to save taxes at home. Problem is, some offshore manoeuvres are legal if people have switched tax residency and paid a departure tax. Media non-cooperation: The CBC has the information but refuses to hand it over to Canada Revenue Agency. Legally, The CBC is still answerable to the taxpayers of Canada. Other problem is democracy does not work without unbiased reporting. The ‘investigative team’s honesty and fairness in representing these data is of immense importance, because the data provided to readers is helpful democratically. The fact: “Panama leaks,” being a startling piece of investigative journalism confirm some of the rich people skilfully manage to avoid paying their taxes without breaking the law. Finding out where they get their money from: This is what “investigative journalism” has come to, printing billionaires’ enemy lists under the guise of “leaks”. Every mainstream news outlet has credited the work of the ICI (The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) a “special project” (their website tells us) of the not-at-all-Orwellian-sounding “Center for Public Integrity)”. This shows ICIJ receives its funding from numerous suspect sources, smoke screen is erected only to divert attention. Release of the Panama Papers, the result of the work of 400 journalists

pouring over millions of confidential documents from a Panamanian law firm that sells anonymous offshore companies around the world, has prompted widespread analysis, outcry and, so far, the resignation of a least one global leader.(sources). Wow! The Panamanian law firm tells their clients Canada is a good place to register a shell company because of lax provincial rules on ownership of companies. ‘People are beginning to realize how extensive the offshore system is, and there is a rapidly rising public anger over that,’ says Nicholas Shaxson. Protesters in Iceland called for the resignation of the country’s prime minister after the Panama Papers revealed he had offshore accounts that he allegedly never disclosed. (Stigtryggur Johannsson/Reuters). Offshore lucrative industry is there to continue as long as the big fish is able to keep milking the public resources funded by the over-taxed middle class. Caution: It’s up to the journalists to smell a real story in front of them rather than becoming a propaganda tool kit. Regarding Pakistan, what The Panama Papers really depict is the corruption of its political system that allows the rich and powerful to gut away with plunder. There are more than 200 Pakistani names in the Panama Leaks, the primary focus is obviously on the one in power. Reportedly, by the end of the current week another 440 Pakistani names with offshore accounts will also be made public. Names of more retired and sitting judges and maybe some retired generals will make it to that list. Increased pressure on the chief justice of Pakistan

to take k suo motu action will follow this second revelation. Also, names of more than 500 Indians are included in Fonseca’s list of off-shore companies around the world(nation.com.pk) p ) Interesting point regarding Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar: monarchs can’t be taxed, but they have secret off-shore accounts and fake corporations. Financial security is desperately needed as insurance, in case they are dethroned. In the Soviet Union, people did not trust the news and wanted to find out what was really happening. People are of the view that “Panama Papers” are of minor significance, in any case — other than their propaganda-significance, nevertheless, the ‘news’ media seem to be doing their best to magnify as much and as big as they can. It is estimated that $32 trillion worth of untaxed offshore funds will double and redouble at the expense of nation-states and societies. The rich will get richer and the rest of the world will only end up in potholes; the deteriorating social unrest shall be devastating causing irreversible political instability. It’s about time for all countries including Canada to legislate full transparency and public disclosure by both residents and foreigners who invest here, as the U.S. is proposing to do with real estate and shell companies. Furthermore, laws should be made to require citizens to pay taxes on income and assets whether they leave or not. Canada together with other countries should go for a shut down of the tax avoidance industry forever.

By: Gulshan Aalani The preachers of peace, and pluralism are working hard to bring peace on earth but it seems their hard work is in vain: even their concept of ‘progressive’ in religion omitting the Scriptural religious practices, ignoring the Holy commands doesn’t seem to work, failing miserably and loosing the battle. Could it be the people have become more prejudice to each other and dislike others who are different than them?Perhaps their technique of peace and pluralism is wrong, not according to the Divine authority, Who has already given the manual of theory and practical lessons through Prophet Muhammad SAWS and the Holy Scriptures the Bible and the Quran that has the remedies of all kinds. Violating the Divine order of the Big Boss the Creator of Mankind and ignoring HIM is the major prejudice against HIM. Consequently, the first peace treaty to be made with HIM and to make covenant with HIM by recognizing HIM and HIS authority. That is the first major requirement. After rejecting HIM, replacing HIM with the human gods, who has rejected HIM and HIS Divine Revelations, declaring them as old useless and wrong Scriptures have committed the most heinous crime. What is done today was done the same in the Biblical time when the Pagans rejected the Bible and

threw it behind their backs. With such hatred of the Divine authority none of their techniques of peace and pluralism will ever work as such is just the surface show off in order to eliminate the Scriptural religions and replace it with their cults. It is like being hateful of the Presidents and P. M. yet claiming to be the good citizens from surface only, secretly working against their regime and plotting to throw them. This is like the works of ‘Daesh’ of deceiving using the fake ID of a Believer.. Quran 39: 2- “Verily it is We Who have revealed the Book to thee in Truth: so serve Allah-Creator, offering Him sincere devotion. 3- “Is it not to GOD that sincere devotion is due? But those who take for protectors other than HIM, saying: “We only serve them in order that they may bring us nearer to HIM. -- But Allah guides not such as are false and ungrateful”. 43- “What! Do they take for intercessors others besides Allah? “--Even if they have no power --?” 65- “-But it has already been revealed to thee,- as it was to those before thee: “If thou wert to join (gods with HIM), truly fruitless will be thy work and thou wilt surely be in the ranks of those who lose (all spiritual good)”. 66- “Nay, but worship Allah-Creator, and be of those who give thanks”.

LONDON: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday that his government was committed to fast-tracking development and prosperity in the country and strengthening the democratic system and norms. Talking to media persons on his arrival here, the prime minister brushed aside all rumours being churned out at home by certain quarters about his government. He said

that he was visiting i i London in connection with his medical check up and expressed his resolve to redouble efforts for the country’s progress and development by utilising all available resources. The prime minister said that he had already addressed the nation on Panama leaks. He said he wondered what was illegal or in violation of law in this case. To a query, he said that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan explained government’s point of view on the commission on Panama leaks on Wednesday. He, however, said that nobody would be allowed to derail Pakistan’s journey towards development. He said that nefarious designs of certain elements that wanted to stop the wheel of development would not be successful. “No effort should be made to hamper progress of the country, nor Pakistan could afford it,” he added. Sharif said in response to a query that the government would take the country on the path of unimaginable prosperity and development in the next two years. He said the Thar Coal project was being inaugurated for the first time in the country’s history and it would generate inexpensive coal power. He said the project would prove a ‘game changer’ for the Pakistani economy. He said his government attached high priority to such development projects and hinted that gas load shedding would end by 2018. Source:dailytimes.com.pk

Imran Khan isn’t impressed by Nawaz Sharif’s judicial commission to investigate the revelations of the Panama papers. The Panama Papers and the revelations therein have left an indelible mark on Pakistan’s political landscape. The bitterly polarized parties of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) once again find themselves at loggerheads over what the latter views as the former’s unwavering corruption. Three of the prime minister’s own family members have been implicated in off-shore activities as per the leaks, which prompted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to set up a judicial commission to probe the matter. Apparently this move does not gain much ground for the PTI chief, Imran Khan, and for good reason.

LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri has said that ample proofs are available to put Sharif family behind bars in the wake of Panama leaks.Addressing a press conference via video link from Canada on Wednesday, he said no leader in the world had denied the proofs revealed in Panama Papers. The PAT chairman said, “Sharifs should be sent to jail and interrogated.” He said action would have been taken against them had the parliament, FIA, FBR and NAB were independent and free. Qadri revealed that on March 21, Hassan Nawaz purchased a property in One Hyde Park, London, worth 42.5 million pounds and the papers were signed on March 30. He said this process of loot and plunder has been continuing for the last 35 years, adding if the relevant institutions wanted to arrest the corrupt they could have done it any time as abundant proofs are available. “But it seems that they do not have the will or are under pressure,” he added.

NATO-led mission in Afghanistan has confirmed that the US military will investigate into the US drone strikes in southeastern Afghanistan that killed 17 people last week. Brigadier General Charles Cleveland, spokesman for the US-led coalition, told Al Jazeera on Monday, that they will conduct an investigation into the air strikes carried out in the Paktika province. “Currently there is no evidence of civilian casualties, however, we are conducting a thorough investigation into the strikes,” Cleveland, who is part of the Operation Resolute Support, said. Relatives and tribal elders demanded for an investigation on Saturday claiming that the air raids hit civilians, not members of armed groups. However, Afghan officials told Al Jazeera that the people killed in the attack had links to the Taliban. A day after the demand for the investigation, United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also confirmed to Al Jazeera that “facts will be verified around the reports”. “UNAMA is verifying the facts around reports of 17 civilians killed and we will publish findings when available,” Dominic Medley, a UNAMA spokesperson, told Al Jazeera. “We look into civilian casualties across Afghanistan, but for this specific case, we have just started off verifying the facts and the report will take a while to have accurate findings.” Mohammed Hassan

Ghazizada, a former senator from Paktika province told Al Jazeera that “investigations will prove the innocence of the people killed in the attack”. “All these people were innocent, I know their families personally and I am also aware of what happened during the attack. This investigation will help them [US forces] confess their mistake.” Afghan soldiers and police has struggled to contain an escalating insurgency after they were handed over the combat role and US withdrawal of forces. About 9,800 US military troops left in Afghanistan is focused on conducting counterterrorism operations across the country. “After the withdrawal of most of the US-led international forces from Afghanistan, the US military’s reliance on aerial attacks has increased,” Dawood Azimi, an Afghan analyst told Al Jazeera. “They don’t have enough ground forces and both the Afghan and foreign forces are already overstretched. Aerial attacks, whether by manned or unmanned aircraft have at times resulted in what is usually called “collateral damage. Nearly two months after Taliban appointed Mullah Akhtar Mansoor as its leader, the armed group has captured new territories in northern and eastern Afghanistan. “If fighting intensifies, which it seems like it will during this fighting season, the US’s reliance on air power will most likely be even greater this year,” Azimi further said. US Secretary of State John Kerry made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Saturday and called on the Taliban to re-engage in peace talks dormant for almost a year. However, Ghazizada believes peace won’t exist in the country if “innocent people are getting killed everyday”. “On one side they are negotiating with the Taliban and on the other side they are conducting air strikes to kill them. Why are they attempting to negotiating with them?” he said. “Afghanistan won’t see peace if in the name of ‘war against terror’ innocent people are dying.” Source: Al-Jazeera

At a conference in Jerusalem last month, hundreds of Israelis and their supporters gathered under one roof, with an explicit aim to combat the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, a Palestinianled human rights campaign. The panellists - including the US comedian Roseanne Barr - called for varied methods to fight the movement, including the “targeted civil elimination” of BDS leaders, which some have called a euphemism for assassinations. Among the speakers at the Stop the Boycott conference was the European Union’s ambassador to Israel, who said that Israeli settlement products were “welcome on the EU market”. “The EU is against BDS,” Lars Faaborg-Andersen said. “Our policy is totally the opposite - one of engagement with Israel, and we have a long track record to prove it.” The European Union is Israel’s largest trading partner, with trade in 2014 amounting to 30 billion euros ($34bn), and one of its most important science and technology partners. Faaborg-Andersen’s comments came after the EU issued a set of guidelines for labelling products from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories - a move that caused an uproar in Israel, although it affects less than one percent of the country’s trade with the EU. To some observers, FaaborgAndersen’s attendance and statement at the forum highlighted a double standard on the part of the EU. While it is mandatory to identify some products - such as fruits, vegetables, honey and olive oil - as having been made in illegal settlements, such labelling is voluntary for other goods, including prepackaged foods and the majority of industrial products. Israeli companies that are subject to the labelling guidelines can also easily circumvent them by mixing goods produced in settlements with others made in Israel,

and then exporting them as the latter. They can also use the address of an office within Israel’s internationally recognised borders, even if production takes place at a settlement inside the occupied West Bank. Some settlements in the fertile Jordan Valley, which yield 40 percent of date exports from Israel, have found additional ways to bypass the labelling instructions. The EU is aware of such risks, and is working to minimise these types of circumvention, according to Ulrike Hauer, head of the political section at the Office of the EU Representative for the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Despite its opposition to Israeli settlements, the 28-nation bloc has repeatedly said that it will neither boycott Israel nor stop trade with its settlements, calling the labelling guidelines an attempt to interpret existing EU law on the place of origin of goods sold within its borders. Some believe this distinction - labelling rather than banning settlement goods - chips away at the effectiveness of the guidelines. Arafeh said that by only labelling products made in settlements while maintaining trade relations with these settlements, the EU is actually continuing to finance their expansion and perpetuate Israel’s occupation. The EU has acknowledged that although the new guidelines are expected to have little real economic impact, they do carry political significance. “This has contributed to provoking a debate among the member states,” Hauer said. “But it has also raised awareness among people who would normally not think about the intricacies of the Israeli occupation and the conflict.” Since 2003, the EU has been using a code on Israeli imports to allow customs to distinguish between produce made in Israel proper, and those manufactured in settlements in the occupied West Bank. Now, European customers are also able to make

CAIRO: Egypt and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement late on Saturday to set up a 60 billion Saudi riyal investment fund among other investment agreements including an economic free-zone to develop Egypt’s Sinai region, Egyptian state television reported. The signing of the agreements took place in Egypt’s Abdeen palace in the presence of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi’s King Salman, during a rare 4-day visit to Egypt. Egypt has struggled to spur economic growth since the 2011 uprising ushered in political instability that scared off tourists and foreign investors, key sources of foreign currency. Egyptian state TV said the agreement was to establish “a Saudi-Egyptian investment fund with a capital of 60 billion riyals between the Saudi Public Investment Fund and the entities belonging to it and the Egyptian government and the entities that belong to it.”A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the Saudi Public Investment Fund and the Egyptian International Cooperation Ministry to set up an economic free-zone in Sinai. No other details were announced. The two countries also signed agreements to develop a 2250 Megawatt electricity plant with a cost of $2.2 billion, set up agriculture complexes in Sinai and develop a canal to transfer water, a statement from the Presidency said. The statement also said that a company was set up to develop 6 square kilometers of the industrial zone around Egypt’s Suez Canal worth $3.3 billion, without giving further details. The investments are part of a change in strategy from Saudi Arabia to focus more on financial support that will also benefit Saudi Arabia with return on investment. Saudi Arabia, along with other Gulf oil prothat distinction. The UK has had labelling guidelines in place since 2009, and a number of European countries have been pushing for a similar initiative on a wider scale. But at the request of the US, the EU delayed publishing its own set of labelling rules in 2014, as Washington was attempting to restart peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. In recent months, anti-boycott measures have targeted activists in Europe, most notably in France, where BDS activism has been criminalised. “The UK [also] is seeking to restrict local democracy by attempting to intimidate elected local councils and other publicly funded institutions and prevent them from supporting BDS initiatives,” Barghouti said. Last week, the UN’s human rights body approved a plan to create a database of com-

ducers, has pumped billions of dollars, including grants, into Egypt’s flagging economy since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 after mass protests against his rule. Some of the projects announced on Saturday include private sector investments. Last week the deputy head of the Saudi-Egyptian Business Council told Reuters that Saudi businessmen are investing around $4 billion in projects in Egypt and have already deposited 10 percent of that sum in Egyptian banks.Egypt is aiming for direct foreign investment of around $8-$10 billion in 2015/16. On Friday, King Salman announced that a bridge connecting Egypt and Saudi Arabia would be built across the Red Sea. No details were given. Egypt also signed development agreements with Saudi Arabia worth $590 million, Egyptian International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr said on Friday. She said the agreements, signed with the Saudi finance minister, covered development in the Sinai peninsula, agriculture, housing and a university. The agreements also include a memorandum of understanding between Saudi Aramco and Egypt’s Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company SUMED. Source: arynews.tv

KOMAGATA MARU.... Cont from Page 1

next month, Trudeau announced in Ottawa Monday. “As a nation, we should never forget the prejudice suffered by the Sikh community at the hands of the Canadian government of the day. We should not and we will not,” he said. “That is why, next month, on May 18th, I will stand in the House of Commons and offer a full apology for the Komagata Maru incident.” Trudeau called the laws that allowed the Canadian government to turn the Komagata Maru away discriminatory. “The passengers of the Komagata Maru, like millions of immigrants to Canada since, were seeking refuge, and better lives for their families. With so much to contribute to their new home, they chose Canada and we failed them utterly,” he said. Discriminatory laws In 1910, an order-in-council was passed which stated immigrants coming to Canada must do so by continuous journey. As a result, Gurdit Singh char-

tered the Japanese ship Komagata Maru and sold tickets for a continuous journey from the Punjab state to Canada. The Komagata Maru sailed into Vancouver harbour with 376 people aboard on May 23, 1914. The passengers argued a 1908 provision that required all “Asiatic” immigrants to have $200 did not apply to them because they were British subjects. At the time, India was still a colony. The dominion government would not allow the passengers to disembark and the vessel sat in the harbour for two months. That July, the government ordered the ship to sail but the passengers took over the ship and refused to leave. On July 19, 125 Vancouver police officers and 35 special immigration agents attempted to board the vessel and were beaten back. Thirty were injured. On July 23, under the guns of the naval cruiser HMCS Rainbow, the Komagata Maru was escorted out to sea and returned to India Source:cbc.ca

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated that Abdullah ibn Nameer narrated and ibn Nameer narrated from his father that `Uthmān ibn Hakeem alAnsaari narrated, “I asked Sa`eed ibn Jubayr about the fast of Rajab, what was his opinion on it. He said, ‘Ibn `Abbās narrated that the Prophet used to fast until we said he would never break fast, and he used to break fast until we said he will never fast. Muhammad Ubayd. Alsoo narrated nar a ratedd byy `Uthmān Uthmān ibn Hakeem Ut Hak akee e m from om M uham mma mad ibn Ub bay yd.

Ten Principles for Those Seeking the Path of Allah By: Abu u Hamid Hami mid idd Al-Ghazali All-Ghazali l-G Principle 1: Have a sincere, unwavering intention. Prophet Muhammad said, “each person will be rewarded for what he intended” (Muslim). This calls for determination in the heart to continuously act or to abstain from something only for God’s sake. A sign of having sincere intentions is that one does not change his resolve for fleeting reasons; what is done for God, the Truth, should not be forsaken to please His creation. Principle 2: Work purely for God, (the One) without partners or associates. Prophet Muhammad said: “worship God as though you see Him, but if you do not see Him (know that) He sees you” (Muslim). A sign of working purely for God is to not accept anything except the truth, and to see everything else besides the truth as vain and fleeting. As the prophet said, “Let the slave of the dinar perish” (Bukhari). One should also beware of falling into doubtful matters. As Prophet Muhammad : “Leave what is doubtful for what is not doubtful” (Tirmidhi and Nasa’i). Principle 3: Align one’s desires with the guidelines and rulings of the Shari`ah (Islamic law). Be patient in times of hardship and difficulty, when struggling with personal desires, and in avoiding sinful acts and pleasures. Whoever practices this regularly

reaches a state whereby he is in his sleep as if he were awake [worshipping], in his mixing with people as if he were in seclusion, in his fulfillment as if he were hungry, in his pride as if he were humiliated, and in talking to others as if he were silent. Principle 4: Base one’s actions on following [the prophet’s way and scholarly opinions], and not on innovation. This prevents the following of one’s own desires and becoming proud of one’s own opinion. Surely, a person who takes himself as his own ruler will not succeed. Principe 5: Have high ambitions, and do not procrastinate. It is said: “do not leave today’s work until tomorrow,” because actions are built on each another; and whoever is content with a lower [status] will be deprived of a higher one. Principle 6: Be aware of one’s incapability and insignificance. This is not referring to laziness in worship or lack of productivity in work. It is about realizing that one is not capable of doing any action without sup-

port from God, the Most Capable, and Most Generous. This awareness is also manifested in viewing other people with respect and reverence, for people are means and helpers of one another on the path to God, the Exalted and Most Bountiful. Principle 7: Have fear and hope, and do not be sure that your good deeds are accepted until you have witnessed this [on the day of Judgment]. One should have hope not because of the good deeds themselves, but because God Himself is the Most Benevolent and Generous. Principle 8: Be consistent in one’s wird (regular litany of worship), for the one without a wird does not have additional source of support from God. With a wird, the soul opens up in public and private; it becomes more mindful of the rights of others; it increases in loving and hating for others what it loves or hates for itself. Also, having that wird makes one work more for God in order to please Him, just as a person would love that God does for him what he finds pleasing.

on y observant ob obsseerv rvan vant of o your Principle 9: Be constantly actions and do not stray away from the remembrance of God even the blink of an eye. For the one who is always observant of his heart for the sake of God, and does not let other than God enter his heart besides, is one who has truly found God, experienced His Benevolence, and has reached ‘ilm al-yaqeen (certain knowledge). This is manifested in seeing God as the Enabler or Mover of everything that remains still or in motion around us. One’s mindfulness then increases from there until he recognizes that God is the Sustainer of everything, so His interaction with the creation is characterized by the best of manners. (Exemplifying this), the Prophet said: “My Lord taught me good manners, and He gave me the best of manners.” Principle 10: Know what one should be occupied with, both internally and externally for whoever thinks that he is not in need of obeying [God and His messenger] is a broke man who is in opposition to God’s words: “…Say ‘If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you’ ” (3:31) This is the foundation upon which have been built castles like no other. In the name of Allah, to whom belongs the dominions, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah, the Most High, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace & Blessings be upon the Prophets of Allah, especially our Holy Prophet, Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa aalihi wa as-haabihi wa sallam).

Alhamdullilah, we are in Rajab, one of the sacred months In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the two [Imams] have related from the hadith of Abu Bakr (Allah be well pleased with him) that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) gave a speech during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and during it said: Verily, truly time has revolved like the day on which Allah created the heavens and the earth! The year is twelve months, including four [that are] sacrosanct; three consecutive [months]: Dhu al-qa`da, Dhu al-hijja, and al-Muharram; and Mudhar’s Rajab which is between Jumada and Sha`ban. Rajab is the seventh month in the Islamic lunar calendar. This month was regarded as one

of the sacred months (Al-Ashhur-al-hurum) in which battles were prohibited in the days of the Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) . It is also a prelude to the month of Ramadan, because Ramadan follows it after the intervening month of Sha’ban. Therefore, when the Holy Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) sighted the moon of Rajab, he used to pray to Allah in the following words. “ALLAHUMA BAARIK-LANA FI RAJABA WA-SHA’BAAANA WA-BAL-LIGHNA RAMADHAANA” “O Allah, make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our life up to Ramadan, so that we may benefit from its merits and blessings).”

We too, should take the opportunity of reading this dua, often in the months of Rajab and Sha’baan. The Holy Prophet Pbuh said, “Rajab is the month of Allah. Shaban is my month. Ramadhan is the month of my ummah (followers).” ” The Holy Month for which the Sahabas used to wait as someone waits for dear and near ones, is round the corner. It is said that the yearning of Sahabas for Ramadan ul Mubarak was they used to pray to Almighty Allah, for six month of the year to give them life and oppurtunity that they be in the Holy Month of Ramadan and rest of the months they used to pray to Allah to accord acceptance to their fasting and other ibadahs of Ramdadan.” Source:http://www.islamicity.com/

For many thousands of years, Vaisakhi has been the time when farmers have put their sickles to harvest and celebrated the coming of a new year. Since 1699, the Sikhs have had a further reason to celebrate at this time of the year. Now Vaisakhi is celebrated with even more energy, pomp and fanfare. It has become a holy day to mark the birth of the Khalsa fraternity. And so 300+ years on, this tradition continues with much gaiety, vigour and enthusiasm. Sikhs worldwide will spend much time remembering this most important day in their religious calendar – the day the Khalsa was created. If we take ourselves back to 1699 and the birth place of the Khalsa perhaps the real significance of Vaisakhi for the Sikh people can be comprehended. During the period around 1650, the country around Punjab was in turmoil; the rulers were corrupt; there was no rule of law; the rights of the common people were non-existent; justice did not prevail. The strong imposed their will and their way

without question; the weak suffered constantly and quietly; there was misery everywhere. It was under these circumstances that Guru Gobind Singh rose to the occasion and chose to create the Khalsa. The Guru was looking for people within the community who would take on the challenge and rise above the weakness; to be strong and fearless; to be prepared to face these challenges without reservation and to uphold justice; to be fair and even handed at all times; to be prepared to die for the truth. The Surrey Vaisakhi Parade has been held in the streets of the community for the past 17 years. Attendees of all races and cultures are welcome at this celebratory and rich cultural event, which features a large number of floats, community performers and live music. Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade also features a unique element which pays tribute to the harvest celebration roots of the parade – attendees are given free food and drink from hundreds of local residents and businesses.

By:Shawkat Hasan BCMA/ Social Service Since December of last year, many officials and members of the BC Muslim Association have been on their feet helping ISS of BC with the influx of the government sponsored Syrian refugees. Those involved have been doing their utmost efforts to make the landing and settlement of the refugees in BC smooth and safe. It was heart breaking to listen to the many stories from the Syrians of what they went through. After listening to some cases, it was rewarding when you were able to put a smile on their faces. BCMA did not only welcome them with the traditional food basket but extended hands and invited them to the many of its locations. School buses were made available to transport the Syrian families to and from hotels to the BCMA centres in Surrey, Richmond and Vancouver. The same school buses were also used with invitations from other groups than BCMA. At many locations, the Syrians left to sit either on chairs or floors to listen to speech after speech by politicians. BCMA invited them many times to Richmond, Surrey/Delta and Burnaby, where no single politician was invited. The space and the room were left for the Syrian brothers and sisters to connect with the local community, where many friendships among families were born. The BCMA food bank at Burnaby branch has been active all the time in providing meals and food supply, sometimes to the door steps of families in need. Today and after all of them moved to their rented places with the exception of very few, exchange visits between families are happening almost on a daily basis. The many volunteers from BCMA worked day and night without publicity or bragging. Islamic brotherhood was the name of the game under “you are the Muhagireen and we are the Ansar brothers and sisters in Islam”. Syrian families who ended up at locations out of the BCMA service jurisdiction were surprised to learn later of what and how BCMA served their people. Those families were then linked with BCMA upon their wish and services were offered to them. Government and non-government organizations in the Vancouver area acknowledge the work of BCMA and extended cooperation on important matters. As we all know and realize that the Canadian environ-

ment is totally different than that of what the Syrians left behind, either back home or in the refugee camps. Some of them are facing a culture shock and others witnessing a fundamental change in the family structure that they knew before. In a simple word they are vulnerable to any tide or wind from anywhere. To serve them well BCMA, with branches at every major city in BC has an obligation to continue to expand its services to reach out and safe guard their peaceful settlement. A hot line has been established which will be available to every location where the new families reside. There are professional social workers on call 24 hours a day, that speak Arabic and English. Groups of many volunteers are also committed to help. This is not a choice for us to take but an integral part of the principal of our religion of Islam and a pillar of BCMA. We sincerely thank the brothers and sisters who donated materials to comfort the Syrian families. Special thanks to the volunteers who managed to put smiles on faces of many Syrian children. I never forget a new Muslim bother; no need to mention his name, drove from Surrey to Richmond on a weekend and ask me to meet just to write a $2000 cheque for the Syrian families account. He said I wish to give more than $2000. I couldn’t find the words of what to say back to him in appreciation. The road ahead of us is too long and we need all the support to fulfill our obligation toward our brothers and sisters who joined us in this land. 1: BRAIN This organ is the master of all the actions and the organs of a human body. It is located in the head, usually close to the primary sensory organs for such senses as vision, hearing, balance, taste, and smell. In humans the largest part of the brain contains 15–33 billion brain cells known as neurons. These neurons communicate with one another by

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common and serious sleep disorder that causes you to stop breathing during sleep. The airway repeatedly becomes blocked, limiting the amount of air that reaches your lungs. When this happens, you may snore loudly or making choking noises as you try to breathe. Your brain and body becomes oxygen deprived and you may wake up. This may happen a few times a night, or in more severe cases, several hundred times a night. In many cases, an apnea, or temporary pause in breathing, is caused by the tissue in the back of the throat collapsing. The muscles of the upper airway relax when you fall asleep. If you sleep on your back, gravity can cause the tongue to fall back. This narrows the airway, which reduces the amount of air that can reach your lungs. The narrowed airway causes snoring by making the tissue in back of the throat vibrate as you breathe. Sleep apnea can make you wake up in the morning feeling tired or unrefreshed even though you have had a full night of sleep. During the day, you may feel fatigued, have difficulty concentrating or you may even unintentionally fall asleep. This is because your body is waking up numerous times through-

By : Ayesha Qureshi On April 2 The Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society (PCWS) is a nonprofit society aimed at promoting community awareness on emerging issues that effect women and the community in general via educational forums. In the past, they have hosted a wide variety of successful International women’s day events focusing on issues related to the youth and elderly alike as well as supported various charities since inception. This year as part of their annual Educational Event, The Pakistani-Canadian Women’s Society (PCWS) organized a free Health Fair that offered participants the opportunity to learn more about their health from the services and resources offered in the community that they live in and furthermore channel them in the right direction. The event, very first of its kind in the community, took place at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Surrey Campus and was well attended by various multi-cultural members of the community. The aim of the fair was to create awareness and address issues pertaining to men and women with a specific emphasis on relatively new immigrants from Syria. More-

L O C A L over, with the help of volunteer interpreters it was an opportunity to facilitate communication between medical professionals and patients ensuring the consultation is understood through their health screening. The Health Fair featured medical professionals in the field of Mental and Emotional Health; Dermatology; General Physicians; Pediatrician; Personal Trainers; Physiotherapy; Pharmacist with live stations to test Cholesterol & Blood Pressure; Dental Health; Dieticians and Behavior Therapists amongst many others. The mini-lectures conducted in the auditorium by medical professionals were well perceived by the attendees. The subjects covered areas pertaining to overall health in multiple languages like Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi and gave the attendees an opportunity to address issues and make queries directly to specialists at the event. The Health Fair was widely supported by multiple sponsors like Naz Pharmacy, on radio with Red FM, RJ 1200, Kamal Sharma, online and print media Community Times Canada, Miracle Media, National Foods and Ascensia Diabetes Care.

The Panama Papers are an unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from the database of the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca. The records were obtained from an anonymous source by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The ICIJ then shared them with a large network of international partners, including the Guardian and the BBC. What do they reveal? The documents show the myriad ways in which the rich can exploit secretive offshore tax regimes. Twelve national leaders are among 143 politicians, their families and close associates from around the world known to have been using offshore tax havens. A $2bn trail leads all the way to Vladimir Putin. The Russian president’s best friend – a cellist called Sergei Roldugin – is at the centre of a scheme in which money from Russian state banks is hidden offshore. Some of it ends up in a ski resort where in 2013 Putin’s daughter Katerina got married. Among national leaders with offshore wealth are Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister; Ayad Allawi, ex-interim prime minister and former vice-president of Iraq; Petro Poroshenko, president of Ukraine; Alaa Mubarak, son of Egypt’s former president; and the prime minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson. An offshore investment fund run by the father of British prime minister David Cameron avoided ever having to pay tax in Britain by hiring a small army of Bahamas residents to sign its paperwork. The fund has been registered with HM Revenue and Customs since its inception and has filed detailed tax returns every year. A lengthier overview of the revelations can be found here.

What is Mossack Fonseca? It is a Panama-based law firm whose services include incorporating companies in offshore jurisdictions such as the British Virgin Islands. It administers offshore firms for a yearly fee. Other services include wealth management. Where is it based? The firm is Panamanian but runs a worldwide

among its clients. The British Virgin Islands held more than 100,000 companies. The intermediaries Rather than dealing directly with company owners, Mossack Fonseca mostly acted on instructions from intermediaries, usually accountants, lawyers, banks and trust companies. In Europe, these offshore facilitators are concentrated in Switzerland, Jersey, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom.

operation. operation Its website boasts of a global network with 600 people working in 42 countries. It has franchises around the world, where separately owned affiliates sign up new customers and have exclusive rights to use its brand. Mossack Fonseca operates in tax havensincluding Switzerland, Cyprus and the British Virgin Islands, and in the British crown dependencies Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. The transfer of wealth The hiding places Mossack Fonseca data seen by the Guardian relates to more than 200,000 companies for which the firm acted as registered agent. Often used lawfully to anonymously hold property and bank accounts, these companies were registered in a range of tax havens and this map shows the most popular locations

The hidden owners Where does the money flowing offshore come from? The information is hard to discover because real owners usually hide behind nominees, people with no real control and no assets in the company who simply lend their signature. A small sample of about 13,000 owners from all over the world, recently compiled by Mossack Fonseca, gives some indication. China and Russia top the list. How big is it? Mossack Fonseca is the world’s fourth biggest provider of offshore services. It has acted for more than 300,000 companies. There is a strong UK connection. More than half of the companies are registered in British-administered tax havens, as well as in the UK itself. How much data has been leaked? A lot. The leak is one of the biggest ever –

larger than the US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks in 2010, and the secret intelligence documents given to journalists by Edward Snowden in 2013. There are 11.5m documents and 2.6 terabytes of information drawn from Mossack Fonseca’s internal database. Are all people who use offshore structures crooks? No. Using offshore structures is entirely legal. g There are many legitimate reasons for doing so. Business people in countries such d as a Russia and Ukraine typically put their assets s offshore to defend them from “raids” by criminals, and to get around hard currency rec strictions. Others use offshore for reasons of s inheritance and estate planning. in Are A some people who use offshore structures tu crooks? Yes. Y In a speech last year in Singapore, David Cameron said “the corrupt, criminals and monC ey e launderers” take advantage of anonymous company structures. The government is trying c to do something about this. It wants to set up a central register that will reveal the beneficial owners of offshore companies. From June, UK companies will have to reveal their “significant” owners for the first time. What does Mossack Fonseca say about the leak? The firm won’t discuss specific cases of alleged wrongdoing, citing client confidentiality. But it robustly defends its conduct. Mossack Fonseca says it complies with antimoney-laundering laws and carries out thorough due diligence on all its clients. It says it regrets any misuse of its services and tries actively to prevent it. The firm says it cannot be blamed for failings by intermediaries, who include banks, law firms and accountants. Free Delivery @ order of $25 The biggest financial data leak in history has revealed how Vladimir Putin’s inner circle and a ‘dirty dozen’ list of world leaders are using offshore tax havens to hide their wealth. A host of celebrities, sports stars, British politicians and the global rich are all implicated in the so-called Panama Papers - a leak of 11million files which contain more data than the amount stolen by former CIA contractor Edward Snowden in 2013. Documents were leaked from one of the world’s most secretive companies, Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, and show how the company has allegedly helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax. Megastars Jackie Chan and Lionel Messi are among the big names accused of using Mossack Fonseca to invest their millions offshore. And the Panama Papers also reveal that the £26million stolen during the Brink’s Mat robbery in 1983 may have been channelled into an offshore company set up by the controversial law firm. Meanwhile, Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak, Libya’s former leader Colonel Gaddafi, Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad and Chinese president Xi Jinping are among those alleged to have links to tax havens through families and associates.

Lord Ashcroft, Baroness Pamela Sharples and former Tory MP Michael Mates are the only British politicians who have been named in the data release so far, while several dictators make up the 12 world leaders listed. German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung obtained the files and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists but the identity of the source who leaked them and how it was done is unknown. The unprecedented leak of confidential documents reveal: A network of secret offshore deals and loans worth £1.4 billion that leads to Russian President Vladimir Putin; Twelve national leaders, including the King of Saudi Arabia, president of Ukraine and the prime minister of Iceland, are among 143 politicians revealed to have offshore accounts, including several dictators; Six members of the House of Lords, three former Conservative MPs and dozens of donors to British political parties are among those said to have benefited from tax havens; A member of Fifa’s ethics committee, which is supposed to be reforming the organisation, worked as a lawyer for people charged with bribery and corruption.

On Saturday, April 2 2016, history was made in BC with the arrival of the first BC Muslim /Diverse women’s event and community awards ceremony, which was organized by a dedicated group of Muslim women and sponsored by Riverside Signature Banquet Hall in Surrey. The event, attended by over 300 female representatives in BC, was the brainchild of award winning community activist and retired psychiatric nurse Farida Bano Ali. Ali saw the need for Muslim women to claim a bigger presence in the community, in an effort to promote tolerance and care between faiths and cultural groups, and to celebrate the achievements of Muslim and non-Muslim women alike. Sadrul Buksh a Dedicated , Champion in Fundraising and Hamida Hassan,Long Term Volunteer, Business Specialist both longtime volunteers in the Muslim community, also gave leadership to the event. Themes discussed throughout the night included bullying, sexual violence and domestic abuse, mental health, workforce equality, and women’s diversity. The organizing committee also gave guests a presentation on the hijab, as well as Women’s Rights from Islamic Prospective and empowerment in

LOCAL

Islam, which highlighted the differences between religious and regional cultural values that inform stereotypes of Muslim women. Notable speakers and attendees included: Queenie Choo, CEO of SUCCESS; Shushma Dutt, SpiceRadio Executive Director; Simmie Smith, RCMP Diversity Advisory Committee; Nassima Nastosh, National Executive Director for Anti-Bullying; Irshad Fawcett, Genesis Women’s Counseling Services and Zein AliWomen’s Rights from Islamic Prospective . Many organizations were also represented, including Muslim Food Bank, Muslim Youth Centre, ISSBC, Safe House operators, and Al-NISA-911 (a domestic violence helpline). Multiple faith groups held a prominent presence at the event. The BC Premier Christy Clark, who opened the night with a speech, was treated to Trudeaustyle mania and spent nearly an hour posing for photos and selfies with guests after an excited mob formed around her. It was a memorable event for Muslim Community A Night with Christy Clark. Special Thanks to Riverside Signature Banquet Hall for their Sponsorship of this Event and Zarah Rachel.

By: Sikandar Hayat The purpose of the event was to bring together generations of people from different faiths to create a dialog to promote peace and understanding in a world faced with extremism and violence. We need to condemn these savage attacks and communicate a universal message that “our communities are united in promoting interfaith dialogue and co-operation to end politically, religiously motivated violence, and to create cultures of peace, respect, understanding and healing for all living beings on earth.” Our sincere hope is to protect and help our communities cope and build resilience in a rapidly changing world characterized with high

levels of extremism. We feel that no one has the right to take away a person’s spiritual free will and self-determination, nor their underlying strength, and we are doing all that we can to fight for peace and condemn these horrific attacks. Respected Media, please engage all of us in a process of healing that is collaborative, enhancing, inclusive, practical, proactive and responsible. The children and youth worked diligently to help protect, organize, and participate in a giving and caring interfaith, community event. We are grateful for your unending support and with your support and encouragement. We can build peace together.

Loss & Grief!

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Grief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or some other loss, the stages of grieving are somewhat the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person most likely goes through five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. The following five stages must be completed for healing to occur: 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving. 3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing and praying for

TOPICS

them to come back. 4-Depress i o n - o v e rwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, s e l f - p i t y, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic. For more information: shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Change – Better ! By Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker It is proven fact that change in the seasons climate affects us, mentally and physically. We cannot avoid or ignore any changes taking place. Since we cannot avoid it, we should face it and turn it into our advantage. That’s real smartness right?! If we are physically sick, we can feel it, see it, sometimes we try home remedies to prevent it as soon as we feel getting sick. What about mental sickness?! We are so busy with our day to day life, hassles, and problems that when we see those symptoms of problems in our behavior we just avoid facing it. We are hopeful that in time it will be alright.

Ignorance is not bliss many times Parents, when you see that children are behaving in a different manner please pay attention and deal with it. A child late does not do homework, either he is always on the phone or computer a lot than before or he/she is sitting depressed. If they lock themselves up, detach themselves from family and friends. All these behaviours is trying to tell us something. It is better to face it, than delay it to save further complications. Where there is will there is a way. It is natural that children or adults may not openly discuss their problems. If they discuss then it is half solved. Those houses where there is good communication, trust, good relations, it becomes comfortable to deal with problems of fam-

ily members. It becomes difficult for parents when they cannot get anywhere near the feelings of children. Parents are not superman – but they have to be one. They also have their problems but this is mandatory requirement. Parents have to find a way to reach out to children. All this is possible when from first the atmosphere is comfortable. This comes with careful upbringing, developing good qualities as a human being, honesty, love, care, honouring ones commitment and sense of duty, big heart and no ego.

Time changes all lives. We should give some time to time.

By Wajiha Rasul, M.A. Discrimination comes in all shapes and sizes but is often discussed when it is from powerful towards the weak. Much literature is written and many efforts are made to address this kind of discrimination. However, what is often neglected in literature and efforts is when weak discriminate among themselves e.g. harsh remarks from a person of colour towards another person of colour. I have seen people from South Asian, Middle Eastern and Latin American backgrounds making inappropriate comments towards people of their own descent. A very famous term “Fresh of the boat” (FOB) is commonly used to describe new immigrants by some so-called experienced immigrants who have been living in the country for some time. I believe such experienced immigrants think they are in power because they can speak English with western accent and follow the western culture. I think such association and feeling that they are better than other immigrants from their own countries is delusional. The fact that such immigrants see their experience of living in a country as power is disturbing. It tells us about their standards that how they value things. It is alarming, as the logic dictates that people in minority should have friendly and caring social bonds so that they can stand for themselves in time of political discrimination. Instead many of

us decide to discriminate among ourselves. Much is needed to be done to address this issue within our communities. We should start from within. Let’s all think about it for a second, how many us have judged other immigrants just because they were not born here or just because they were not luck enough to immigrate here before us? I bet, a lot of us have done it. Living in the west and speaking accent-less English should not be our standard. We should think about more systematic issues and direct our energies towards addressing them. For example, unemployment in minorities still is a big issue, not finding relevant jobs according to our education and professional experience is a big issue. Why are we stuck at such discriminating standards for judging our own people? Through this article, I urge you all to take responsibility, and change your standards. Before judging anyone ask yourself what makes you so perfect? Is the person next to you is not a human as you are?

Waqar Younis does not think he was able to make much of a difference to Pakistan cricket in his recently concluded two-year stint as national coach. A big part of the problem, he told ESPNcricinfo in an interview, was a lack of proper direction at the administrative level, with the PCB having “two heads” in board chairman Shaharyar Khan and executive committee chairman Najam Sethi, who pulled the game in “two different directions”. Outgoing T20I captain Shahid Afridi’s “temperament issue” did not help either, Waqar said. A former Pakistan captain himself, Waqar had resigned from the coaching role earlier this week with three months left on his contract, following Pakistan’s dismal showing at the Asia Cup andWorld T20 where they won only three games out of eight. It was a messy parting of ways, with his announcement coming soon after his scathing report on Pakistan cricket - featuring Afridi’s lack of leadership skills, and the

In a pre-draft interview with a National Hockey League team years ago, Nazem Kadri was asked a rather abrupt question. “Do you do drugs?” He waited a second, answered no, and his answer was followed by a warning of sorts. “You know, we’ve never drafted a player who has lied to us.” The interview ended, they shook hands and Kadri walked out. A few seconds later there was a knock on the hotel room door. It was a rather sheepish Kadri. He came back to tell them that he had done drugs. Nothing serious. Nothing deep rooted. He told them they could trust him, count on him. He has been fighting that jigsaw of perception and reality for almost his entire hockey career. Of what he is, what he could be and what he should be. Of what is rumour about him and what is fact and what is supposition. About whether he could be trusted as player, as person, as teammate, as friend. The answers were always debated until it became official in his mind on Tuesday night. The man who hasn’t been able avoid the headlines — whether it

SPORTS indiscipline among the players among other things - was leaked to the public. “The biggest issue was having two heads of a family, [it] did not help the cause,” Waqar said. “Not only for the coach but cricket overall also suffered because, inside the PCB, there are two heads and two different directions. That needs to be looked into. That is very important.” It was important for the PCB to realise it existed to help grow cricket in Pakistan, not the other way round, Waqar said. “I have said previously that people in a cricket board should be coming towards the team, towards the coaching staff. They should be coming towards us, to improve things, because they are for the cricket team, for the game. The cricket team is not for them. “Here we have a culture where cricket teams beg for things from them [administrators]. It should be the other way around and it needs to be changed on an immediate basis.” When asked why he had stayed in

was body fat, staying out too late, sleeping in, hanging with the wrong people, diving, getting suspended — was going to be a Maple Leaf for six more seasons and at a glorious yet economical figure of $27-million. This is a good story, Kadri admits, a story of acceptance, a story of belonging, for a kid who didn’t always know what the right thing was to do. A story of a guy who has been forced to grow up before our eyes and under the spotlight of Toronto. “It’s a success story,” said Kadri, standing in the centre of the Maple Leafs dressing room. “It doesn’t stop here. This is the beginning.” It’s not exactly the beginning but it’s the first time Kadri knows for certain what the Leafs think of him. How much they believe in him. And when he played for Ron Wilson or Dallas Eakins or Randy Carlyle, as part player, part whipping boy, he was never sure. But he was certainly sure when Leafs’ president Brendan Shanahan called him into his office last March and they had a heart to heart, the kind a 19-year-old Shanahan had once had with his general

the role for so long despite all these issues, Waqar said he had hopes of changing the way Pakistan cricket worked. “I couldn’t do exactly what I wanted to. I’m always in support of the younger players coming through, indulging the younger players, but unfortunately it did not happen. There were forces that didn’t allow me [to do so]. “Some people ask why didn’t I leave early but I have faith in the idea that to fix the system, you have to stay in the system. I’ve tried to fix it, but it didn’t work.” The main problem with Afridi, Waqar said, was his inability to concentrate for long periods. “Afridi’s drawbacks as a captain are for everyone to see. He has got a temperament issue. He cannot sit for too long to highlight things, or absorb things and then go and implement them. I’ve said this in my report.” Waqar said Afridi was in stark contrast to Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq. “My relationship with Misbah was excellent and we all know that.

manager, Lou Lamoriello. Lamoriello told Shanahan back then he needed to grow up. He told him he needed to be more responsible. Kadri wasn’t 19 when he had his talk with Shanahan a year ago but the tone and inference was clear. This was his last shot as a Maple Leaf. If Shanahan hadn’t cared that much about Kadri, believed in him, he wouldn’t have bothered. He wouldn’t have invested any time in him at all. He wouldn’t do what is rarely done for any professional athlete — he didn’t just have Kadri in for the meeting. He also called in his parents. He suspended Kadri and publicly embarrassed him. “Going through that made me a stronger person and a better person,” said Kadri. “Last year could have gone in one of two directions. I gave them my word that it would go in the direction I thought it would. And here we are today.” Kadri was rewarded after his most complete NHL season with the six-year deal. There are seven years left on Mike Babcock’s contract as coach of the Leafs. He will, barring a trade, have Kadri with him for almost all of that time, and if he wasn’t on

Because I think he has got a great temperament for cricket. When you sit with him, he can talk about cricket for hours. And I think when you are a captain, you need to absorb a lot of things from the coach.” He had managed to maintain a working relationship with Afridi, Waqar said, but that has been wrecked by the leaked report. “I have been very clear that report was not for the media, but for the cricket board. Unfortunately, the report was leaked and my relationship with Afridi has been spoilt.” In his report, Waqar had mentioned the need for a high-performance manager’s post to be created by the PCB, and he reiterated that view. “I think there should be a high-profile position, like a performance-enhancing manager, who can work as a bridge between the board and the players, enhance physios, trainers, the NCA, and only handle cricketing matters. That could be a foreigner, so there is no baggage. Source: Cricinfo
