The Ongoing Water Stress ! Obviously, the water scarcity has been caused by inadequate natural water resources; that led to socioeconomic pain. Drought, badly managed pumping, leaky pipes in municipal water systems, outdated infrastructure, inadequate technology, rising population, and the demand for more food production are collectively responsible for the increased pumping of groundwater. Flood irrigation despite its inefficiency dominates irrigation method worldwide. The aquifers have long served as a backup to help the regions through droughts and warm winters lacking enough snowmelt to replenish rivers and streams. The result is the world’s largest underground water reserves in Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas are under stress. Nearly two billion people rely on the threatened groundwater. India has been suffering from a severe drought that has forced millions of farmers to rely more heavily on groundwater. The Indus Basin aquifer, in northwestern India and Pakistan, and the Murzuk-Djado Basin in North Africa, are the second and third most overstressed systems, respectively. In India, the world’s largest consumer of groundwater, the government subsidizes electricity – an incentive to farmers to keep pumping. Over the past three decades, Saudi Arabia has been drilling for a resource more precious than oil. Engineers and farmers have tapped hidden reserves of water to grow grains, fruits, and vegetables in the one of the driest places in the world. The new studies found that the Arabian Aquifer System serves more than 60 million people

across Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and parts of Jordan, Iraq and Syria, hence is the world’s most overstressed groundwater source. Richard Damania, a lead economist at the World Bank, predicts that without adequate water supplies, economic growth in the most stressed parts of the world could decline by six percent of GDP. His findings conclude that the most severe impacts of climate change will deplete water supplies. But few things are more difficult to control than groundwater pumping, Damania says. In the United States, farmers are withdrawing water at unsustainable rates from the High Plains, or Ogallala Aquifer, even though they have been aware of the threat for six decades. As regions and nations run short of water, Damania says, economic growth will decline and food prices will spike, raising the risk of violent conflict and waves of large migrations. The water crisis is responsible for unrest in Yemen as it heavily taps into groundwater; there were water riots in 2009. Some experts blame the water-scarcity for helping destabilize Syria and launch its civil war. More than a half-million Syrian left for refuge. Jordan, which relies on aquifers as its only source of water, is even more water-stressed. Moreover, Beijing continues to be sinking. In some neighborhoods, the ground is giving way at a rate of four inches a year as water from the giant aquifer below is pumped out. Tapping into the gigantic North China Plain aquifer, is the world’s fifth most water-stressed city and its water related problems

Wa a n l a y s a l i l i n s a n i i l l a m a ’ s a ’ a a

are likely to get even worse. The fact is groundwater has been so depleted that China’s capital city, home to more than 20 million people, could face serious disruptions in its rail system, roadways, and building foundations as concluded by an international team of scientists. China, however, is working to regulate pumping. Nevertheless, Beijing isn’t the only place experiencing subsidence, or sinking, as soil collapses into space created as groundwater is depleted. Parts of Shanghai, Mexico City and other cities are sinking too. Sections of California’s Central Valley have dropped by a foot, and in some localized areas, by as much as 28 feet. Around the world, eyes are now opening because the depletion of underground water supplies is taking place. The United Nations predicts a global shortfall in water by 2030. About 30 percent of the planet’s available freshwater is in the aquifers that underlie every continent. Jay Famiglietti, lead scientist on a 2015 study using NASA satellites to record changes in the world’s 37 largest aquifers, says that the ones under the greatest threat are in the most heavily populated areas. “Without sustainable groundwater Reserves, global security is at far greater risk,” he says. “As the dry parts are getting drier, we will rely on groundwater even more heavily. The implications are just staggering and really need to be discussed at the international level.” Also, in 2015, scientists at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada concluded that less than six percent of groundwater above one-and-a-half miles in the Earth’s landmass is renewable

within a human lifetime. When water levels drop below to 50 feet or less, it is often not economically practical to pump water to the surface, and much of that water is brackish or contains so many minerals that it is unusable. The Northern Great Plains Aquifer, which stretches across the U.S. and parts of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, fared better than others, according to a depletion map published alongside the reports. Just over 30 per cent of Canadians, or 8.9 million people, rely on groundwater for domestic use, and that is just below the national average in Ontario at 28.5 per cent, according to government statistics. Groundwater consumption is more widespread in Canada’s rural communities than in cities, Howard said. Prince Edward Island relies entirely on groundwater, he added, and Kitchener-Waterloo is another place that highly depends on it. Howard said that while the NASA reports’ findings were not entirely new, they serve as ‘a wake-up call’ that additional data is needed to protect this underground resource. In Western Australia, desalinated water has been injected to recharge the large aquifer that Perth, Australia’s driest city, taps for drinking water. In west Texas, the city of Abernathy is drilling into a deeper aquifer that lies beneath the High Plains aquifer and mixing the two to supplement the municipal water supply. Though depleted groundwater is a slow-speed crisis, there’s still time to develop new technologies to counter the menace; that’s the only way to eliminate threat of famine and the possible future water wars.

EID-AL-ADHA message from President of The B.C. Muslim Association

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful All praise belongs to Allah, the Creator of heavens and earth and the Lord of the universe. Dear respected brothers, sisters, elders and children Assalamu’Alaykum wa Rahamatullahi wa Barakatuhu On behalf The BC Muslim Association, its officials, staff and members, it is my pleasure to extend a very warm and joyous EID MUBARAK to you and your loved ones. It’s again that time of the year when we want to be in Mecca, Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj. It is here we become closer to our Lord and ask forgiveness and regret our shortcomings. Here we make a genuine commitment to Allah (swt) that we sincerely repent and promise to change and live our life as a true believer. Allah swt, in HIS

infinite mercy, will grant our wish, In Sha Allah; but we must keep the promise when we return home. It is expected that we are conscious of the promise and genuinely change our life otherwise the journey is meaningless no matter how many times we perform the Hajj. True meaning and significance of Hajj is rooted in the life and legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh). His unwavering determination to seek Allah and his obedience put him thru numerous trials, tribulations and sacrifices throughout his life. There is lesson for us all and it’s imperative to reflect on our spirit of sacrifice for the betterment of Islam, our community and our country at a time filled with greed, egoism and self-promotion. Terrorism and anti- Muslim sentiments are widespread and our Ummah is faced with deviant philosophy that is trying to destroy the fundamental message of Islam. We are passing

through challenging times. We are confronted with deceptive messages and we need to educate our society and everyone about the true message and glory days of Islamic culture and civilization. We are blessed to welcome newcomers in our community from Syria and Iraq who need our help. We need to go out of our way to assist them settle in new culture and environment. I know, local members of the community are doing Quarbani and sharing the meat with family, friends and the needy. Please invite them into your homes, share the meat and entertain them. They have been through a lot and still facing challenges locally. Your act of kindness, generosity and sacrifice will go a long way in making a difference in their lives. I am pleased to announce that The B.C. Muslim Association as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) with the Federal Government has submitted application for sponsoring the first family of six and thereafter will be able to sponsor 10 families once every 21 days, In Sha Allah. More details are available in our ‘Gazette’ on the website. Before I conclude, I’d like to advise that there is an online petition being signed nation-wide calling upon the House of Commons to

join us in recognizing that extremist individuals do not represent Islam and condemning all forms of Islamophobia. I am asking every family member to sign it. It’s absolutely important to come together as a Muslim Community and have our voices heard. This petition is for everyone, Muslim and nonMuslims. (www.petition411.ca) I hope and pray that you and your families have a wonderful Eid. On this auspicious occasion, let’s renew lessons learned from our beloved Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) and bring change in our lives and make a difference in the lives of other people. May Allah swt bring us all closer to Islam and enable us to fulfill our responsibilities and make us a better Muslim. May HE bless and reward all the volunteers and hard working officials of BC Muslim Association and their families for their dedication, loyalty and sacrifice….Ameen! Again “EID MUBARAK” to you all. Pakistan rejects Indian claims of restraint in India-held Kashmir

The Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Tehmina Janjua, on Wednesday welcomed the remarks by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding excessive use of force by Indian security forces in India-held Kashmir (IHK).“Pakistan supported the position of the High Commissioner that an OHCHR team should visit India-occupied Kashmir to independently and impartially investigate the grave violations being perpetrated by Indian occupation forces over the past two months,” said Janjua. She added the visit by the UN team would help address the culture of impunity which is prevalent in IHK. Ambassador Janjua said claims of restraint shown by India are simply preposterous. “Jammu and Kashmir is an international issue recognised as such by a number of UNSC resolutions,” the permanent representative told the Human Rights Commission. The Foreign Office said that there is no agreement

with India for using Pakistan’s land routes for supplies to Afghanistan. Wani, a 22-year-old commander of Kashmir’s largest proindependence militant group Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), was killed along with two other separatists during a gun battle with Indian government forces. Wani joined the HM group at the age of just 15, and was viewed as a hero by many in Kashmir. The state’s former chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted after his death that he had become the “new icon of Kashmir’s disaffected”. Witnesses said tens of thousands attended his funeral despite a curfew imposed by Indian authorities, chanting independence slogans. Indian government troops in IHK have reportedly fired live ammunition, and used pellet guns and tear gas to control anti-government protesters. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called an emergency meeting to discuss escalating violence in India-held Kashmir amid anti-India protests. Pakistan’s Foreign Office has also condemned the violence in Indian-held Kashmir. HM is one of several groups that for decades have been fighting around half a million Indian troops deployed in the region, calling for independence for Kashmir or a merger with Pakistan. Indian paramilitary soldiers patrol during curfew in Srinagar. Kashmir has been divided between rivals India and Pakistan since 1947, but both claim the territory in its entirety. Tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, have died in the fighting since 1989. Violence had sharply declined in recent years following a major crackdown by the hundreds of thousands of Indian forces deployed in the region. But a recent uptick in militant attacks has galvanised frustrated young Kashmiris, majority of whom deeply resent the Indian military’s presence. Source : The Dawn

Afghan soil should not be used for anti-Pakistan activities: Lodhi Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lohdi, said on Wednesday that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Pakistan activities. Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Lodhi said that Pakistan was exercising restraint on certain statements that were being issued from Kabul. “Pakistan is exercising patience on allegations from certain quarters in Kabul,” she said during her address. Maleeha Lodhi said that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Pakistan activities and said that the Islamic Republic was ready to cooperate with Afghanistan to establish peace. “Powerful international forces waged a war in Afghanistan for 15 years,” she said. “No other option is more suitable for peace than negotiations,” she added. Lodhi said that peace in Afghanistan could not be attained by any military option. She said that Pakistan would not allow its soil to be used for the Afghan war and reminded

the world that the country was hosting Afghan refugees since decades. “We have told Afghanistan government that allegations will harm the peace of the region,” she said. “The path to peace in Afghanistan is difficult yet not impossible. Itt is up to the Afghan people to determine which path they would choose,” she said. The Afghan government has accused Pakistan of supporting the Taliban, while Delhi says Pakistan supports rebels crossing the border into Indian-controlled Kashmir -- claims that Islamabad denies. 4 N A T & I N T . N E W S Muslim woman’s hijab set on fire US and Israel to sign record on New York’s Fifth Avenue military aid deal Dhul Hajah 14. 1437 September 16, 2016

A Muslim woman wearing traditional garments had her clothes set on fire by a man with a lighter as she shopped on a crowded New York City street over the weekend, police said Monday. The 35-year-old was dressed in a hijab and standing outside a Valentino store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan Saturday night, when she felt heat on her left side, according to the New York City Police Department. The woman, who has not been identified, saw that her blouse was on fire and patted out the flames. When she looked up, she noticed a man standing with a lighter in his hand, police said. The man disappeared down a side street, leaving the startled woman with a “quarter-sized hole” in her blouse and no injuries, NYPD spokesman Christopher Pisano told The Washington Post. “The male doesn’t say anything and walks away,” Pisano said. Police are investigating the alleged assault as a hate crime. No one has been arrested and no suspects have been identified. Pisano said the woman was visiting the city from another country; DNAinfo described the woman as a dentist from Glasgow, Scotland. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the incident fit an alarming pattern of attacks on Muslims and Islamic sites in recent months. “We are clearly seeing a spike

in attacks on individual Muslims and Islamic institutions in New York and around the country, which should be of concern to all Americans,” said Afaf Nasher, director of the group’s New York chapter, in a statement posted on Facebook. “It is time for the mayor and the NYPD to put forward the necessary resources to investigate and prevent these attacks on the Muslim community.” The incident comes just days after a Brooklyn woman allegedly beat two Muslim mothers as they pushed their toddlers in strollers down a busy sidewalk in the borough’s ethnically diverse Bath Beach neighbourhood. The woman, Emirjeta Xhelili, punched one of the mothers in the face and tried to rip off her hijab while screaming obscenities at them, authorities told the New York Daily News. Xhelili then allegedly tried to grab the other mother’s stroller, which was carrying her 15-month-old child, according to the Daily News. Xhelili, 32, was arrested and charged with hate-crime assault. Xhelili is being held on $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash bail, according to The Associated Press. Her lawyer told the Daily News she has no prior arrests. In another attack that has stoked fear in the city’s Muslim community, a Queens man in August allegedly shot and killed an imam and his assistant as they left afternoon prayers in the borough’s Ozone Park neighbourhood. Alauddin Akonjee and Thara Miah were walking together on a weekend afternoon when Oscar Morel came up behind them and shot them execution-style in their heads, authorities said. Morel, who is charged with murder, has denied killing the men. Source: Al-Jazeera

The United States has agreed to a record multi-billion-dollar deal to provide Israel with military assistance over a decade - the largest such agreement ever with any country. Following 10 months of frequently tense negotiations, the State Department said on Tuesday the two allies had reached a deal with a signing ceremony planned for Wednesday in Washington DC. Israel has long been a major recipient of US aid, mostly in the form of military assistance, against a backdrop of an ebbing and flowing conflict with the Palestinians and Israel’s neighbours. The US and Israel have not disclosed the exact sum, but officials familiar with the deal told news agencies it totalled $3.8bn a year - up from the $3.1bn the US gave Israel annually under the previous 10-year deal that ends in 2018. The agreement was described as the “single largest pledge of bilateral military assistance in US history”, but it also reportedly involves major concessions by the Israeli government, which will no longer be able to seek additional annual funds from the US Congress over and above the new package. Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane, reporting from Washington DC, said the annual $3.8bn figure did not mark a big change “compared to what Israel was getting in 2015 or 2016”. “It sounds like a bit of a difference, but then if you look at the money that the US Congress routinely gives Israel on top of that $3.1bn, it’s really not that much more,” Culhane said. “In 2015, the US Congress gave Israel $620m for missile defence, so

Aid convoys are waiting at the TurkishSyrian border for the government in Damascus to give authorisation to enter Syria, the UN has said, as a fragile ceasefire that came into effect at sundown on Monday appeared to be largely holding across the country. The UN envoy for Syria on Tuesday applauded the “significant drop in violence”, more than 24 hours after the declaration of a truce deal brokered by US and Russia. “Today, calm appears to have prevailed across Hama, Latakia, Aleppo city and rural Aleppo and Idlib, with only some allegations of sporadic and geo-

graphically isolated incidents,” Staffan de Mistura told a news conference in Geneva. “Sources on the ground, which do matter, including inside Aleppo city, said the situation has dramatically improved with no air strikes,” he said. Twenty-four hours after the tentative ceasefire took effect, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that it had received not a single report of combatants or civilians killed by fighting in any areas covered by the truce. “This is so far the most successful ceasefire to take place in the country,” the SOHR’s Rami Abdulrahman told Al Jazeera on Tuesday. The truce deal does not apply to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), or Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, the group formerly known as al-Nusra Front that changed its name after cutting ties with al-Qaeda in July. The truce agreement has been accepted by the Syrian government and, far more reluctantly, by most of the groups that oppose it, with rebel forces Ssaying that the deal was skewed in favour of President Bashar al-Assad. Russia said Syrian government forces were fully respecting the ceasefire but that rebel fighters

had violated it 23 times. “Syrian government troops have completely stopped firing, with the exception of areas where the Islamic State [of Iraq and the Levant] and Jabhat Al-Nusra fighters are active,” senior Russian military officer Viktor Poznikhir said in a televised briefing. Speaking to reporters, de Mistura dismissed earlier reports by Turkish state media that aid lorries on Tuesday had entered Syria heading towards rebel-held eastern Aleppo, saying the UN was still waiting for authorisation from the government in Damascus. “We are asking them to issue them very quickly so that ... we can take advantage of this reduction of violence in order to be able to make sure that, not only eastern Aleppo, western Aleppo but everywhere else, convoys can start moving,” he said. “We have not yet received those authorisation letters but we are eagerly hoping and expecting the government to issue them very soon.” De Mistura also said that UN officials were awaiting assurances that the aid convoys would be “unhindered and untouched” after crossing from Turkey into Syria. “We are waiting for this cessation of hostilities

basically Israel is going to get the same amount as it’s been getting.” The reported figure also is significantly lower compared to the $4.5bn - $5bn sums that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was seeking when entering the negotiations 10 months ago, according to Culhane. Israel’s government had no immediate comment on the deal. Under the agreement, Israel’s ability to spend part of the funds on Israeli military products will be gradually phased out, eventually requiring all of the funds to be spent on American military industries, according to the Associated Press news agency. Israel’s preference for spending some of the US funds internally had been a major sticking point in the deal. The new US-Israel agreement also includes, for the first time, funding for missile defence programmes. Under the previous arrangement, Congress approved funds for missile defence separately and on an annual basis. The deal comes despite mounting frustration within US President Barack Obama’s administration at Israel’s policy of building settler homes on occupied Palestinian territory. Washington has warned that Netanyahu’s policies are putting at risk hopes of an eventual peace deal. Source: Al-Jazeera

Syria truce: UN hails ‘significant drop’ in violence

to actually deliver the assurances and the peace before trucks can start moving from Turkey. As I speak, that has not been the case,” Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, also said in Geneva on Tuesday. “We need to enter an environment where we are not in mortal danger as humanitarian organisations delivering aid.” The Syrian government said it would reject any aid deliveries to Aleppo not coordinated through itself and the UN, particularly from Turkey. The Syrian foreign ministry said: “Commenting on the statement issued by the Turkish regime on its intention to send what it says is humanitarian aid into Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Republic announces its rejection of the entry of any humanitarian aid to Aleppo, particularly from the Turkish regime, without coordination with the Syrian government and the United Nations.” Turkey said it was already making preparations to deliver humanitarian aid to Aleppo, where some 250,000 people in the rebel-held east are under government siege. 6 N A T & I N T . N E W S Vancouver housing market set to Study details sugar industry enter a correction with prices attempt to shape science falling at least 10%: National Bank Dhul Hajah 14. 1437 September 16, 2016

Vancouver’s housing market may enter a correction with price declines of at least 10 per cent, according to Stefane Marion, Montreal-based chief economist and strategist at National Bank of Canada. “There is downside to single family homes in Vancouver,” after policy changes in the last year such as higher down-payment requirements and a provincial tax on foreign buyers, Marion said Tuesday at the Bloomberg Canadian Fixed Income Conference in New York. Price declines will be moderated by the province’s strong job growth, he said. “I don’t think it sends the economy into a tailspin. It’s a healthy correction,” Marion said. The Pacific Coast city is the focus of concern about a crash, with prices surging well past $1 million on the lowest mortgage rates in decades and a constrained supply of land for new properties. The British Columbia provincial government set a 15 per cent tax on foreign home buyers that took effect last month, following several rounds of federal government action to tighten mortgage rules. Longer-term forces like low interest rates will help Canada avoid a crash, and policy makers must guard against cracking down on regional markets in a way that adds to the risks, said Emanuella Enenajor, senior Canada and U.S. economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York. “I wouldn’t be surprised if, barring any meaningful regulatory shifts, housing continues to outperform,” she said. “Putting a foreign tax on the Vancouver housing market, perhaps that pushes demand into other markets

such as Toronto, creates other kinds of distortions in the economy. I think there is a need for a national solution.” Governments have tried to keep a lid on house price gains. The B.C. tax on purchases by foreigners contributed to a 26 per cent decline in transactions in Vancouver in August, though Toronto’s market continues to soar, with prices up 18 per cent on average in the month. Canada’s bigger problem right now is the lack of growth led by private spending, something Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz has been counting on, Enenajor said, adding that makes a cut in his 0.5 per cent policy interest rate more likely than an increase. “We are rotating in the wrong direction, we are getting a mix of growth that’s not very healthy or sustainable,” she said, referring to a growth in household leverage. Data show the economy struggling to gain direction amid a raft of contradictory signals. While job creation rebounded in August after a slump in July, a slide in hours worked and a rise in the unemployment rate suggest labour-market slack is building. While the economy grew at the fastest pace in three years in June, and exports surged in July, the Bank of Canada said last week that risks to inflation and growth were tilted to the downside. Weakness in Canada’s nonenergy exports is somewhat “inexplicable” in a time where Canada’s dollar should be low enough to provide a boost, said Dawn Desjardins, Toronto-based deputy chief economist at Royal Bank of Canada. The risk of a Vancouver housing market crash is tied more to the wider economy than the fundamentals of that city, where prices are supported by barriers to growing the supply of housing, Desjardins said. “While we do think that prices won’t be growing at 30 per cent as we go forward, unless you see some significant change in terms of employment or the economy generally, it’s really hard to say we are going to see a big crash there,” she said Source: Vancouver Sun

US Mosque scene in the early hours of Monday after receiving reports of flames coming out of the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, located about 160km southeast of the city of Orlando. No injuries were reported and the extent of the damage was not immediately clear. Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s holiest festivals, was being celebrated on Monday and also could have prompted the attack, Major David Thompson, of the St Lucie County Sheriff ’s Office, said. “We are not sure exactly whether this is a hate crime or just an arson, we do know that a crime has occurred and that it is arson,” he told reporters at a news conference. Investigators were also considering a connection with the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Sunday, Thompson added.

Islamophobia is a multimillion dollar industry At the news conference, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Florida said the blaze was an act of hate. Ahmed Bedier, president of the civic group United Voices for America, also called for authorities to investigate it as a hate crime. “For this to happen to us, on the morning of our biggest celebration of the year, was something horrific,” Hamaad Rahman, associate imam at the mosque, also told reporters. The mosque temporarily relocated

its morning prayers for Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice that marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Security video showed an individual approaching the northeast side of the building on a motorcycle around 11:38pm, a flash of light appearing and the individual then fleeing, the sheriff ’s office said, identifying the suspect as a white or Hispanic male. “In the video, it appears he is carrying paper and a bottle of some type of liquid,” it said in a statement. Photographs posted on the sheriff department’s Facebook page showed fire engines parked in front of the building, which is a former church. Texas Muslims threatened amid increasing Islamophobia Authorities were working on enhancing the security video to help identify the perpetrator. The FBI and other federal agencies are collaborating with the local sheriff ’s office in the investigation. There were reports that the mosque had been attended by Omar Mateen, the man who opened fire at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, killing 49 people and injuring 53 others on June 12. Mateen, a New York-born resident of Florida, was killed by police.

The sugar industry began funding research that cast doubt on sugar’s role in heart disease -- in part by pointing the finger at fat -- as early as the 1960s, according to an analysis of newly uncovered documents. The analysis published Monday is based on correspondence between a sugar trade group and researchers at Harvard University, and is the latest example showing how food and beverage makers attempt to shape public understanding of nutrition. In 1964, the group now known as the Sugar Association internally discussed a campaign to address “negative attitudes toward sugar” after studies began emerging linking sugar with heart disease, according to documents dug up from public archives. The following year the group approved “Project 226,” which entailed paying Harvard researchers today’s equivalent of $48,900 for an article reviewing the scientific literature, supplying materials they wanted reviewed, and receiving drafts of the article. The resulting article published in 1967 (part one and part two) concluded there was “no doubt” that reducing cholesterol and saturated fat was the only dietary intervention needed to prevent heart disease. The researchers overstated the consistency of the literature on fat and cholesterol, while downplaying studies on sugar, according to the analysis. “Let me assure you this is quite what we had in mind and we look forward to its appearance in print,” wrote an employee of the sugar industry group to one of the authors. The sugar industry’s funding and role were not disclosed when the article was published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The journal did not begin requesting author disclosures until 1984. In an editorial published Monday that accompanied the sugar industry analysis, New York University professor of nutrition Marion Nestle noted that for decades following the study, scientists and health officials focused on reducing saturated fat, not sugar, to prevent heart disease. While scientists are still working to understand links between diet and heart disease, concern has shifted in recent years to sugars, and away from fat, Nestle said. A committee that advised the federal government on dietary guidelines said the available evidence shows “no appreciable relationship” between the dietary cholesterol and heart disease, although it still recommended limiting saturated fats. The American Heart Association cites a study published in 2014 in saying that too much added sugar can increase risk of heart disease, though the authors of that study say the biological reasons for the link are not completely understood. The findings published Monday are part of an ongoing project by a former dentist, Cristin Kearns, to reveal the sugar industry’s decades-long efforts to counter science linking sugar with negative health effects, including diabetes. The latest work, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, is based primarily on 31

pages of correspondence between the sugar group and one of the Harvard researchers who authored the review. In a statement, the Sugar Association said it “should have exercised greater transparency in all of its research activities,” but that funding disclosures were not the norm when the review was published. The group also questioned Kearns’ “continued attempts to reframe historical occurrences” to play into the current public sentiment against sugar. The Sugar Association said it was a “disservice” that industry-funded research in general is considered “tainted.” Companies including Coca-Cola Co. and Kellogg Co. as well as groups for agricultural products like beef and blueberries regularly fund studies that become a part of scientific literature, are cited by other researchers, and are touted in press releases. Companies say they adhere to scientific standards, and many researchers feel that industry funding is critical to advancing science given the growing competition for government funds. But critics say such studies are often thinly veiled marketing that undermine efforts to improve public health. “Food company sponsorship, whether or not intentionally manipulative, undermines public trust in nutrition science,” wrote Nestle, a longtime critic of industry funding of science. The authors of the analysis note they were unable to interview key actors quoted in the documents because they are no longer alive. They also note there is no direct evidence the sugar industry changed the manuscript, that the documents provide a limited window into the sugar industry group’s activities and that the roles of other industries and nutrition leaders in shaping the discussion about heart disease were not studied. Nevertheless, they say the documents underscore why policy makers should consider giving less weight to industry-funded studies. Although funding disclosures are now common practice in the scientific community, the role sponsors play behind the scenes is still not always clear. In June, the Associated Press reported on a study funded by the candy industry’s trade group that found children who eat candy tend to weigh less than those who don’t. The National Confectioners Association, which touted the findings in a press release, provided feedback to the authors on a draft even though a disclosure said it had no role in the paper. The association said its suggestions didn’t alter the findings. In November, the AP also reported on emails showing Coca-Cola was instrumental in creating a non-profit that said its mission was to fight obesity, even though the group publicly said the soda maker had “no input” into its activities. A document circulated at Coke said the group would counter the “shrill rhetoric” of “public health extremists.” Coca-Cola subsequently conceded that it had not been transparent, and the group later disbanded. FAITH Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “Whoever slaughtered (his sacrifice) before the ‘Id prayer, should slaughter again.” A man stood up and said, “This is the day on which one has desire for meat,” and he mentioned something about his neighbors. It seemed that the Prophet I believed him. Then the same man added, “I have a young she-goat which is dearer to me than the meat of two sheep.” The Prophet permitted him to slaughter it as a sacrifice. I do not know whether that permission was valid only for him or for others as well. S.Bukhari15:74

ow did the spread of Islam affect the world?

Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the simplicity of its doctrine – Islam calls for faith in only One God worthy of worship. It also repeatedly instructs man to use his powers of intelligence and observation.

Within a few years, great civilizations and universities were flourishing, for according to the Prophet, ‘seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim man and woman’. The synthesis of Eastern and Western ideas and of new thought with old, brought about great advances in medicine, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, architecture, art, literature, and history. Many crucial systems such as algebra, the Arabic numerals, and also the concept of the zero (vital to the advancement of mathematics), were transmitted to medieval Europe from Islam. Sophisticated instruments which were to make possible the European voyages of discovery were developed, including the astrolabe, the quadrant and good navigational maps. What is the Qur’an? The Quran is a record of the exact words revealed by God through the Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad. It was memorized by Muhammad and then dictated to his Companions, and written down by scribes, who cross-checked it during his lifetime. Not one word of its 114 chapters, Suras, has been changed over the centuries, so that the Quran is in every detail the unique and miraculous text which was revealed to Muhammad fourteen centuries ago.

What are the They are the framework of the Muslim life: faith, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able.

Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from first light until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. Those who are sick, elderly, or on a journey, and women who are pregnant or nursing are permitted to break the fast and make up an equal number of days later in the year. If they are physically unable to do this, they must feed a needy

Are there any other sacred sources? Yes, the sunna, the practice and example of the Prophet, is the second authority for Muslims. A hadith is a reliably transmitted report of what the Prophet said, did, or approved. Belief in the sunna is part of the Islamic faith.

Examples of the Prophet’s sayings The Prophet said: ‘God has no mercy on one who has no mercy for others.’ ‘None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.’ ‘He who eats his fill while his neighbor goes without food is not a believer. ‘ ‘The truthful and trusty businessman is associated with the prophets the saints, and the martyrs.’ ‘Powerful is not he who knocks the other down, indeed powerful is he who controls himself in a fit of anger. God does not judge according to your bodies and appearances but He scans your hearts and looks into your deeds.’ ‘A man walking along a path felt very thirsty. Reaching a well he descended into it, drank his fill and came up. Then he saw a dog with its tongue hanging out, trying to lick up mud to quench its thirst. The man saw that the dog was feeling the same thirst as he had felt so he went down into the well again and filled his shoe with water and gave the dog a drink. God forgave his sins for this action.’ The Prophet was asked: ‘Messenger of God, are we reward-

THE FAST

What is the Qur’an about? The Quran, the last revealed Word of God, is the prime source of every Muslim’s faith and practice. It deals with all the subjects which concern us as human beings: wisdom, doctrine, worship, and law, but its basic theme is the relationship between God and His creatures. At the same time it provides guidelines for a just society, proper human conduct and an equitable economic system.

‘pur cation’ and ‘growth’. Our possessions ‘purifi are purified by setting aside a proportion for those in need, and, like the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new growth.

NAJI ALLAH God Intimate Friend

cept God and Muhammad is His messenger. This declaration of faith is called the Shahada, a simple formula which all the faithful pronounce. In Arabic, the first part is la ilaha illa Llah – ‘there is no god except God’; ilaha (god) can refer to anything which we may be tempted to put in place of God – wealth, power, and the like. Then comes illa Llah: ‘except God’, the source of all Creation. The second part of the Shahada is Muhammadun rasulu’Llah: ‘Muhammad is the messenger of God.’ A message of guidance has come through a man like ourselves.

PRAYER Salat is the name for the obligatory prayers which are performed five times a day, and are a direct link between the worshipper and God.

The ZAKAT One of the most important principles of Islam is that all things belong to God, and that wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The word zakat means both

person for every day missed. Children begin to fast (and to observe the prayer) from puberty, although many start earlier. Although the fast is most beneficial to the health.

PILGRIMAGE (Hajj) The annual pilgrimage to Makkah – the Hajj – is an obligation only for those who are physically and financially able to perform it. Nevertheless, about two million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe providing a unique opportunity for those of different nations to meet one another. Although Makkah is always filled with visitors, the annual Hajj begins in the twelfth month of the Islamic year (which is lunar, not solar, so that Hajj and Ramadan fall sometimes in summer, sometimes in winter). Pilgrims wear special clothes: simple garments which strip away distinctions of class and culture, so that all stand equal before God.

Harder times for Palestine if Clinton wins

By:Stanley L Cohen ave the Palestinians ever faced a worse American electoral season? A sociopathic, New York “strongman” narcissist versus a neo-liberal Zionist: whoever succeeds - and anything can happen this time - we know it won’t be good for Palestine. Both candidates gave almost identical speeches to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee’s (AIPAC) convention this spring. The temptation is to think Republican Donald Trump - with his love for authoritarian “winners” like Israel, and his vow to “bomb to hell” out of every problem - makes a better friend to Israeli aggression. Yet the record reminds us, with Hillary Clinton’s long history of defending Zionism, the Palestinians are between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The ironies run deep with this Democratic candidate. Clinton holds the unprecedented distinction of being the only major party nominee, man or woman, ever to have actually visited the Gaza Strip - a historic trip she made at her husband’s side in the final weeks of 1998, when US President Bill Clinton faced impeachment at home. Together during the first state visit by an American president to the occupied territories they attended the opening of the new Gaza airport, the signing of a revised Palestine National Charter, and meetings to shore up the Wye River Accords.

And raised the Health, Education, Social economic, mental health, Crimes, Housing and other Mega projects, BC Economy, Daily Minimum wedges in BC, , Translink system, Crime control, Education system in Surrey as compare to the other cities of BC. Miracle Media also asked about the BC New Democrats last moment results and momentum

Demolition of Palestinian aspirations I recall visiting the new $83m airport with local Rafah friends, months after her visit, and not a single commercial flight had been permitted. The terminal stood shimmering and empty in the blazing midday heat, a mirage. The paint still smelled fresh, and for kicks, we raced in civil defence Jeeps down one of the empty runways, past the control tower and

hangars. The next year, the whole place would be blown to bits by Israeli warplanes, the tower a smoking ruin, the runways full of bomb craters. The Clintons were long-gone by then, and no one in the US government raised a hint of objection to what was both the symbolic and the practical demolition of Palestinian aspirations to fly free of the occupation - Gulf State and German money had built the place, who cared if the Israelis wanted it destroyed? A year later, Clinton’s greeting with Suha Arafat stoked tabloid hysteria screams of “blood libel”, as if the First Lady, by embracing a Muslim woman, had committed treason - and she moved swiftly to a vocal, pro-Zionism position, where she remains today. During that very same visit, Clinton campaigned to win the US senate seat for New York, while in “the 51st state”. Every candidate makes pilgrimage there, to assure New Yorkers that they love Israel more than the next guy: it is a sloppy mess, with politicians competing for AIPAC approval, by kneeling to kiss the ring of a foreign power. Yet Hillary out-did them all in her fawning, gratuitously inserting the Zionist formula for Jerusalem’s subjugation in an official letter to an Orthodox Jewish union, writing that she believed the city to be “the eternal and indivisible capital” of Israel, while promising to move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv. The verbal formulation has long been a shibboleth of Israeli expansionism - Republicans in the Congress had passed a bill - the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 - ordering President Clinton to move the embassy, or face budget consequences. However, the law contained a presidential waiver, and Clinton invoked it to get out of

complying. This grotesque pantomime has has been repeated every year for the past 20 years, as Congress renews the law, each president opts out, and the embassy remains in Tel Aviv.

Naive or manipulated? At the time, many wondered if the First Lady had been naive, or manipulated - her adoption of the language of Israeli conquest and annexation stood in sharp contrast to her party, her husband’s official position, and international law. It also contradicted the US State Department’s policy. If she did not understand its dangerous implications, then her competency was in question; otherwise, it represented a shift for the party, signalling quiet abandonment of the Palestinians. Her record since then speaks for itself. As a senator, she has visited the illegal wall destroying Palestinian life, praising it for its guarantee of Israeli “security”; she visits Jerusalem, and repeatedly calls it “Israel”; and as a 2008 presidential candidate, her campaign extolled Israel’s “right” to an “undivided Jerusalem as its capital”. Since the beating she took for embracing Madame Arafat, Clinton is like the child who has touched a hot stove - she fears the Palestinians and their cause, and will not take it up again.

Palestinians will find no comfort at her official website. A look at her current Israel page, “Hillary Clinton and Israel: a 30-Year Record of Friendship, Leadership and Strength”, gives the general drift of her Zionism - record-breaking military budget increases for Israel’s war-making machine; opposing the Goldstone Report into rights violations during the Gaza conflict; criticising the United Nations for its votes against Israel; intelligence sharing with Mossad; and so on. She promises, when she is president, to “defend Israel on the world stage” by opposing “anti-Israel bias” in international forums (the International Criminal Court and human rights venues), vowing the Security Council will never help Palestine; and to “stand up against” the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement, while cutting off efforts to recognise Palestinian statehood. It is clear that Clinton will not - as Obama did - be visiting any Arab capital with a proffered fig leaf. If, as Shakespeare warns us, “What’s past is prologue,” Clinton can be expected as president to mount the ramparts of Fortress Israel, and vigorously wave the flag - more aggressively than Bush or Reagan, or any president before her, portending hard times for Palestine. By: Nasik Swami PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is disappointed with “elements of the international community” who have aired their concerns on the detention and questioning of Fijians who had allegedly contravened our laws.In a statement issued last night, Mr Bainimarama said some elements of the international community issued such statements without objectivity. “The Public Order Act, among other provisions, requires any group wanting to hold a public meeting to apply for a permit from the police before the proposed event,” he said.In this case, Mr Bainimarama said, no application was made so the police were entirely within their rights to question those who have allegedly contravened these provisions.“Those who attended this gathering were lawfully detained for questioning and there have been no allegations of any of their human rights being breached while in detention,” he said. “These included the right to legal counsel. They were released within the 48 hours that the law prescribes as the limit at which they can be detained without appearing in court.” He said a notable double standard was being adopted by certain countries in relation to this matter. “They either suspend certain rights themselves when incarcerating their citizens or other nationals and in some instances, even on the mere suspicion of a remote threat to their national security. “They have adopted practices and laws that are abhorrent to internationally accepted human rights values and principles. “Other nations turn a blind eye to or are mute on similar behaviour on the part of their friends and allies.”

He said Fiji had a sovereign right to make its own laws and in the case of the Public Order Act, it existed because of its colonial past and an unfortunate history of civil unrest in post-independent Fiji which could not be repeated. “The statute in question is to ensure law and order, protect our people and maintain the health of our economy on which the welfare of every Fijian depends. “Apart from having a plethora of human rights provisions, the Fijian Constitution goes further to state that the interpretation of these human rights shall be referred to international human rights law and standards.” Mr Bainimarama said the police was carrying out its independent duty and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions would similarly carry out its own independent assessment as to whether these individuals should be prosecuted or not. “Any objective assessment of what is happening on the ground in Fiji in respect of this matter requires an understanding and appreciation of the separation of powers between the independent institutions of the State,” the prime minister said. “The Fijian Government respects the independence of all these institutions.” Source: www.fijitimes.com

‘No civilian deaths in Syria’ as ceasefire brings calm

No deaths have been documented in Syria since a ceasefire brokered by Russia and the US entered its first full day, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). At least 14 violations were reported since the ceasefire took effect on Monday, but most parts of Syria remained relatively calm, the SOHR’s Rami Abdulrahman told Al Jazeera. “No one has died from gunfire over the past 15 hours,” he said on Tuesday at 12pm Damascus local time (09:00 GMT). “This is so far the most successful ceasefire to take place in the country.” Al Jazeera’s Stephanie Dekker, reporting from Gaziantep on the Turkish side of the Syria-Turkey border, said that while the guns have not gone quiet, there definitely is a military de-escalation. “No one expected the gunfire to totally stop anyway, including the US,” she said.

The AFP news agency reported that residents on both sides of divided city Aleppo passed the night without opposition rocket fire into government-held areas or regime air strikes against rebel districts. Eid al-Adha holiday Residents remained out on the streets until midnight, AFP said, taking advantage of the truce to celebrate the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday. In the opposition-held central Syrian town of Talbiseh, which came under heavy fire in the run-up to the truce, activist Hassaan Abu Nuh said the government’s bombardment had stopped. “We usually stay up all night with the airplanes, but thank God last night we could all sleep,” he told AFP. In the largely rebel-held northwestern province of Idlib, where air strikes killed 13 people on Monday, an activist reported a quiet night too. Source:www.aljazeera.com

By Stephen Kalin The U.S.-led war on Islamic State has depleted the group’s funds, leadership and foreign fighters, but the biggest battle yet is expected later this year in Iraq’s northern city of Mosul, where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared his “caliphate” two years ago. The jihadist insurgents have lost more than half the territory they seized in Iraq and nearly as much in neighboring Syria, but still manage to control their twin capitals of Mosul and Raqqa, symbols of the state they sought to build at the heart of the Middle East.Military and humanitarian preparations are now in full swing to retake Mosul, the largest city under the ultra-hardline group’s control. American troops are establishing a logistics hub to the south, while the United Nations warns of the world’s most complex humanitarian operation this year. Iraq’s recapture over the summer of Qay-

yara airbase and surrounding areas along the Tigris river 60 km (nearly 40 miles) south of Mosul have set the stage for a big push on the city, which commanders say could start by late October. Whether Islamic State makes a final stand in Mosul or slips away to fight another day remains in question, but Baghdad expects a fierce battle and the international coalition backing it is preparing for one. KNOWLEDGE

Boost Your eQ (Email Intelligence) By:Frances Peck You may know your IQ (intelligence quotient) and maybe even your EQ (emotional intelligence), but what about your eQ? Email intelligence is a quotient that’s little known and seldom measured . . . well, make that not known and never measured, since I’ve basically just made up the term. But even though eQ doesn’t really exist, we know when someone has it. When we get an email from a high-eQ correspondent, we read it quickly and easily, we understand the main points and we know how or if we should respond. When we get an email from someone less gifted, the reading becomes more arduous. According to plain language specialist Michel Gauthier, who has studied email in the workplace, here are the leading complaints: •Too much low-level and untargeted information •Unclear purpose •No logical structure •Too long •Too difficult to understand •Key information difficult to find If you boost your eQ by learning a few email pointers, you’ll rise above all these pitfalls. Maximize the subject line The subject line is the lure. Word it well and recipients will begin reading with a clear idea of what the message contains. The trick is to make the subject line specific while keeping it short, and to tell your readers how the email relates to them. Otherwise, they may assume the message is a general FYI and hit delete. Besides announcing the email’s content, the subject line should, if possible, alert readers to any action required. •NO Survey information,i.e YES Draft survey attached: review by Jan. 9 •NO Organizational change, i.e YES New staff join us next week Crafting a precise, reader-oriented subject line is the first step toward giving your email a clear

purpose. The second is to announce your key message(s) at the beginning. Doesn’t this just duplicate the subject line? Not really. Think of the subject line as your knock on the door. Once the reader opens up, you still have to say why you’ve come calling. State the purpose of your email up front, in the opening paragraph or two. To do this, you need to have defined your purpose beforehand. Ask yourself why you’re writing. Are you informing the reader of a situation? If so, begin with “For your information . . .” (or “FYI,” if your reader knows the shorthand), then state the main topic, then follow with the details. Are you asking the reader to do something? If so, start with the request, then fill in the supporting information and background. If there’s a time line associated with your email— especially if the reader needs to review something, reply or take action by a certain day—don’t bury the date at the end of the email. If you do, the reader may glance at the opening, file your email for later and miss the deadline. Ditch the optional details Nothing tests a reader’s patience like irrelevant information. Once again, how your email begins is crucial. Many writers feel compelled to lead their reader on a gentle, meandering path to the main point and always begin at the beginning (chronologically speaking), with background information. The trouble is, background details are meaningless, and often irritating, to a reader who doesn’t know why they’re being supplied. State your purpose clearly, then add only those details the reader needs to understand the email. Use hyperlinks and attachments to provide background, charts and other supporting details that are too in-depth for the email itself. Be clear and concise Clear and concise writing is a must for emails, perhaps more than for any other type of writing. Given how many workplace emails people get (an average of 54 a day, says Christina A. Cavanagh in her 2004 paper “Email in the Workplace:

Harmony Bringing

Coping with Overload”) and how little time they have to read them, the risks are plain—a long email may not get read. How long should your email be? Common wisdom says no more than one screen length. Curb connectors Avoid using phrases to make connections. Simple prepositions and conjunctions do the job better. •NO with regard to, in connection with, on account of the fact that, in the event of •YES about, on, because, if Pass on passives Passive voice is not only wordier than active, it’s also less clear. •NO It is recommended . . . A decision has been made . . . •YES We recommend . . . We have decided . . . The decision is . . . Minimize modifiers Delete non-essential modifiers such as very, highly, slightly, greatly and somewhat. If the modifier adds an important nuance, consider switching to a more precise word. •very important = crucial •highly focused = concentrated •slightly worried = concerned Consider contractions Contractions cut word count and remind the reader that there’s a real person—approachable, readable, persuasive—behind the @ symbol. Use your judgment, though. Contractions may be too breezy for formal emails. Shrink sentences Keep each sentence to one main idea, plus maybe a supporting idea. Anything longer and a busy reader will lose the thread. Pare down paragraphs Email paragraphs should be shorter than their print-based counterparts. Run-on text with nary a pause gives the impression that your material is dense and hard to read. Three to four sentences maximum is a good length. Use headings and lists Just like a peruser of print documents, an email

reader needs help focusing on key information. Headings and lists (numbered or bulleted) quickly convey what your main points are. And they show where your main points are, an important plus for emails that readers might refer to again in the future. Use headings and lists together with forecasting statements, and readers will know exactly where they’re headed. For example, if you’re writing to ask the reader three questions, say: •I have three questions for you. Then list the questions, numbered 1, 2, 3. This allows the reader to mentally tick off each question when replying. If your content doesn’t lend itself to a numbered list, try linking the forecasting statement to headings. For example: •At the meeting we’ll discuss two topics: our upcoming retreat and our quarterly budget. Then use the headings “Upcoming Retreat” and “Quarterly Budget” to structure the information that follows. Be clear about follow-up Follow-up actions are best grouped together at the end of the email, so they’re the final ideas the reader is left with. Use a simple, clear heading such as “Actions to Take,” “Next Steps” or “Your Tasks.” For easy reading and future reference, put the actions in a numbered list rather than one continuous paragraph. That way, the reader will finish your email thinking, “Okay, I have four things to do.” And if you’re lucky, the reader may also think, “Wow. What a high eQ!” Courtesy: www.btb.termiumplus.gc.ca

IMMIGRATION

Canada faces big questions about the future of immigration

As other countries turn away refugees or have divisive debates on limiting newcomers, Canadians will welcome as many as 300,000 immigrants to the country this year, up from a cap of 285,000 in 2015. Immigration Minister John McCallum, who is fresh off of a Canada-wide summer consultation on immigration policy, is looking to boost that number even higher next year. “We are in need of new blood because Canadians aren’t having enough babies,” he said in Calgary in August. “The labour force growth depends very much on the entrance of immigrants.” At the same time, the Liberal government is looking to overhaul many parts of the immigration system, from the controversial Temporary Foreign Worker Program to how skilled immigrants get into the country. A key focus is “breaking down the barriers so we can have the ability to seek out the best and brightest,” said McCallum over the summer in Ottawa. The government’s current review, which is expected to lead to policy changes within months, comes on the heels of dramatic changes by the former Harper government to almost every aspect of immigration policy. A year-long Postmedia investigation shows the consequences of current policies range from a spurt in the number of temporary foreign workers overstaying their four-year limit – and an ensuing growth in the underground economy – to constraints on how wealthy immigrants interested in investing in Canadian businesses can settle in the country. “Immigration policy is this complicated technical area where we get sucked down into the program details all the time,” said Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel. “I think we do have to have a larger conversation around what the bigger vision is.” As Canada has taken in a growing number of migrant workers and international students, the number of people living in the

country on temporary visas has grown by the thousands in the last 15 years. Many hope to stay, but don’t get the chance. It’s a big change from decades past, when it was more common for people to enter as permanent residents, according to analysis by Toronto sociologists Luin Goldring and Patricia Landolt. Many of these temporary workers, from software engineers in Vancouver to meat packers in rural Alberta, fill significant jobs for the Canadian economy. With the government set to table a review of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program this fall, along with possible reforms to help businesses facing labour shortages, parliamentarians must not lose sight of Canadians, said Rempel, a Calgary MP. “There’s a lot of people – Canadians – that should be given a first kick at those jobs on either the high skill side or the low skill side.” In the face of complaints about companies overusing or abusing the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, the previous government limited how long these workers could stay and how many businesses can hire. But the policies have seen thousands of temporary workers in low-paying industries move underground, say researchers and workers. “I’m working for my family,” explained Jose Osano, a migrant worker deported in May. He overstayed his visa in hopes of obtaining a new work permit, so he could keep remitting money to his children and wife in the Philippines. The moves also imposed significant losses on employers who say they haven’t been able to hire enough workers to fill voids created by the limits. “It was gut-wrenching,” said Susan McBride, director of human resources at Highline Mushrooms in Ontario, after a rule forced the company to lay off harvesters with as much as eight years’ experience. It lowered morale and affected the bottom line, with many mushrooms being sent to

the cannery because they weren’t picked well enough to be sold raw, she said. Often, companies that hire temporary workers, including signature Canadian brands like Maple Leaf Foods, don’t want them to leave. When they can, they transition them to permanent residency through provincial immigration programs. Now, several “low-skilled” industries, such as lobster plants and mushroom farms, are asking the federal government to make it easier for their workers to stay. Just because a job doesn’t require a university degree doesn’t mean the people who do it aren’t bringing value to the Canadian economy, they say. Ottawa’s intense focus on bringing in the “best and brightest” made much more sense in the 1970s when fewer Canadians went to university and there were “real shortages in skilled areas,” said Robert Vineberg, former director general of Citizenship and Immigration Canada for the Prairies and Northern Territories.“We really have to have a fundamental rethink of where the Canadian labour market is going,” he said. The Trudeau government has signalled changes are coming, with McCallum stating as recently as Sunday that he supports paths to permanent residency for migrant workers, but it’s unclear how far-reaching the moves will be. Ottawa also faces questions about how effective immigration policies are towards assisting the Canadian economy and immigrants themselves. Academic studies show many talented newcomers, ranging from doctors to accountants, are struggling to become accredited in Canada and find jobs in their field even after the government poured millions into improving the system. Many move to the United States because making it in Canada is simply too hard.

The Liberal government has said it plans to hold a meeting with the provinces to tackle the issue. Another key concern for the Trudeau government is how to spread immigrants to small cities and rural areas that say they need more people. More than three-quarters of newcomers land in just seven large cities. Employers in small centres across Canada and local officials have taken matters into their own hands, travelling abroad to job fairs and using other strategies to recruit immigrants directly. “Once you become a permanent resident, you have a constitutional right to live wherever in Canada you want,” said McCallum. “So we have to find ways to induce the immigrants to go where they are most needed.” But many small communities complain the immigration system does a poor job of supporting them. “Immigration laws are concentrating on what the big centres need and absorb,” said Adele Dyck, an immigration consultant in Winkler, Man., a city of 12,000 that has launched a string of successful initiatives to bring newcomers to the community. From overhauling the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to boosting Canada’s intake of immigrants, many groups will be carefully watching how the Liberal government decides to balance the immigration system when Parliament opens on Monday.

“Hacking” By: Nafisa Siddiqui The sun was shining brightly in the sky, it’s warm rays flashing brightly. I looked back inside the library and was greeted by the colorful bindings and the musty smell of books. I smiled and went back to my writing, my pencil on my notebook and my eyebrows furrowed as I tried to think of what to write. Suddenly I had an idea, I wrote the first word in the beautiful, flowing script of urdu Right at that moment my phone started ringing, it was a call from granddaughter. My happiness melted into anxiety when I heard her frantic voice. “How are you,are you okay?”. “What do you mean?” I replied “I left home only an hour ago of course I am doing great!” I heard her let out a breath that I didn’t realize she was holding, when she spoke she sounded confused, as if something had happened and I didn’t know. ”Oh! your email address had been compromised.” I was rendered momentarily speechless. When I found my voice back I was surprised to find that it was steady. “ you mean my email has been hacked?” “Yes “she said, panic in her voice .”How you know” I asked, worry radiating from me in waves ”I got an email from you that said you are in trouble”. “Delete it and don’t respond “I said. “I already

Some quick tips to help you become a better computer user and internet surfer: Everyone (especially seniors) should know this handy tip: While holding down the Ctrl button on your keyboard -- rotate the scroll wheel in the middle of your mouse. All of them were sent strange emails! Almost all of my friends and family responded but most of them found it fishy when the hacker started asking for money. My phone started ringing nonstop, vibrating every few seconds as I began receiving texts and calls from friends and family. They all are so concerned about me! This was my first ordeal with hacking and it will hopefully the last. My computer wizard son helped me change the password and taught me how to solve rest of the problems. When my friends responded the way they did when they thought I had written the messages, and the reactions of the people who were neither in my inner circle of friends nor in my family that don’t understand spam and didn’t understand why the emails were asking for money, I felt so much embarrasment and sheepishness. The worst part is that my online security and my computer have been compromised, my writing, messages, and personal information, were all stored in my computer. This can be happen to anyone, an unprotected computer is open door for

hackers and predators. According to John Bonora, owner and founder of Privacy Policy Solutions, “So much of your online security really hinges on your email address, the Federal Trade Commission tracks all fraud and identity theft originates via email.” How to Protect Yourself From Hacking These are the rules I find quite easy and effective for protection 1.Your password should be long and strong, not humble. 2. It’s a good idea to use a mixture of numbers, lowercase and uppercase letters and special characters (punctuation) as it increases the complexity of your password and increases its strength. 3. Never use a password twice. 4. Use a two way firewall. 5. Update your operating system on regular basis. 6. Increase in browser security settings. 7.Avoid opening questionable websites and unfamiliar emails. 8.If you suspect any message as spam delete it right away.

Go ahead and hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard and press “f” -- you should see a search box pop-up somewhere on your screen. (Usually near the bottom of the window). Now you can type any word into that search box and your internet browser with find and highlight each instance of that word as it appears on the page. You can also click the “next” button to allow the page to auto-scroll to the next instance of the word. Neat, eh? I use this feature all the time. Source: Blifaloo’s Computer Tips

9.Use anti virus protection. 10.Install the best security soft ware products. If you find out that your email is compromised the first thing that you need to do is to inform people from your email list from different email addresses. It is better to create a new email address to keep track of activity in your email account. It’s wise to stop online purchases for a while. Anyone that is using a computer that is connected to the Internet is facing the threats that computer hackers and predators pose. 1.5 million Muslims performed Haj in 2016

S

audi Arabia: From Asia, Africa and points in between, nearly 1.5 million Muslims began the annual Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia to Islam’s holiest sites on Saturday, undeterred by last year’s deadly stampede. After preliminary rituals this week in Makkah at the Grand Mosque, pilgrims moved on Saturday, many by bus, to Mina several kilometres east. In debilitating temperatures exceeding 40C, some pilgrims walked under coloured parasols. They are following in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who performed the same rituals about 1,400 years ago. “It’s an indescribable feeling. You have to live it to understand. This is my sixth Haj and I still cannot express how happy I am to be in Makkah,” said Hassan Mohammed, 60, from Egypt. Then they proceed to Mount Arafat, several kilometres further, for peak of the Haj on Sunday.Mina becomes the pilgrims’ base, where an expanse of solidly built white fireproof tents can accommodate 2.6 million people beneath bare mountains. Last September 24, Mina was the scene of the deadliest disaster in Haj history, when a stampede broke out as pilgrims made their way to the Jamarat Bridge for a stoning ritual. This year’s “Stoning of the Devil” will start on Monday. Officials have been issuing pilgrims with bracelets that digitally store their personal data, after some foreign officials expressed concern about difficulties in identifying the stampede dead. Authorities aim to give bracelets to each of the 1.3 million faithful from abroad, who are expected to be joined by more than 100,000 Muslims residing in Saudi Arabia. There has been no figure for the number of bracelets distributed so far. Interior ministry spokesman General Mansour al-Turki spoke of “great efforts being exerted by the kingdom, not only in maintaining

the security and safety of the pilgrims, but in facilitating performance” of the rites in comfort. Pilgrims appeared satisfied on Saturday. “Everything is well organised,” said Nasser Benfitah, 54, from Morocco. “We feel safe,” added Nigerian pilgrim Hafsa Amina, 26. — Reuters AFP adds: Okaz newspaper, citing anonymous sources, said Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh, “will step down from delivering the sermon on the day of Arafat, due to health reasons.” He was appointed Grand Mufti in 1999 after the death of his predecessor Sheikh Abdel Aziz bin Baz. Okaz said the mufti spent about two months preparing for each address. In previous Arafat sermons, Sheikh has attacked jihadist extremists and Yemeni rebels who Saudi Arabia accuses of receiving weapons from Iran.

gual help desk to guide especially nonArabic speaking pilgrims around the various rituals of the annual Islamic event. Every year, millions of Muslims travel to Mecca and Medina, Islam’s holiest sites, which are under the custody of Saudi Arabia. Last year, authorities say 769 pilgrims died in the stampede in the Mecca district of Mina when thousands of pilgrims converged on a walkway intersection. The majority of the victims were Iranian nationals. To address the security issues, nearly a thousand new surveillance cameras have been installed at Mecca’s Grand Mosque, monitoring pilgrim movements, Saudi newspapers have reported. Taking part in the pilgrimage at least once in one’s lifetime is a major obligation for all able-bodied Muslims of financial means, and between two and three million people participate in the six-day ritual every year. The annual Muslim pilgrimage reenacts the actions of the Prophet Muhammad in his “farewell pilgrimage” in AD 632. British ambassador embraces Islam,

performs Haj Among the 19,000 British pilgrims performing Haj this year was British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Simon Paul Collis and his wife Huda Mujarkech. It was known to some diplomats and journalists that he had embraced Islam but there had been no official word. The confirmation came on Tuesday in the form of a tweet from Saudi writer and academic Fawziah Al-Bakr (@fawziah1). She posted two photos of Ambassador Collis and his wife in which he was wearing ihram. The ambassador replied to the post by thanking Al-Bakr via his official Twitter handle (@ HMASimonCollis). The ambassador’s wife (@ HudaMCollis) retweeted Al-Bakr’s post. Though Collis refused

media requests for interviews on Wednesday, he said: “I have converted to Islam after being in Muslim societies for 30 years, and right before getting married to Huda.” Collis has served as British ambassador to Saudi Arabia since January last year when Sir John Jenkins retired from the diplomatic service. The photos went viral on Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, sending social media into overdrive. Among the first who congratulated the ambassador and his wife was Princess Basmah bint Saud (@PrincessBas-

mah). “Special congratulations to the ambassador and his wife,” wrote Princess Basmah. “Thank you, Princess Basmah,” replied the ambassador. British pilgrims were pleasantly surprised by the news.“I would like to congratulate the ambassador on the historic occasion of his completion of Haj,” said Rashid Mogradia, CEO of the Council of British Hajis (CBHUK). “He is one of many thousands of British pilgrims to perform the journey of faith and we look forward to him sharing his experience and inspiring us all,” Mogradia added. Top 10 very important organs in a Human Body

Miracle’s Human Bodyparts Series

8.Pancreas Ever wondered that pan-

creas is too an important organ for all human beings. It is located in the abdomen and it helps in the conversion of food into fuel for body cells. The pancreas plays two important functions. One is endocrine function which helps in regulating blood sugar and other is exo-

crine function which helps in digestion .It is a digestive organ which is secretes pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes that assist the absorption of nutrients and the digestion in the small intestine. These enzymes help to further break down the carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids in the chyme. If pancreas fail then the juices gets released in the body and it may also lead to death. http://listdose.com/

Mental Health Conditions Among Patients Seeking and Undergoing Bariatric Surgery

By: Aaron J. Dawes, MD Importance Bariatric surgery is associated with sustained weight loss and improved physical health status for severely obese individuals. Mental health conditions may be

common among patients seeking bariatric surgery; however, the prevalence of these conditions and whether they are associated with postoperative outcomes remains unknown. Objective To determine the prevalence of mental health conditions among bariatric surgery candidates and recipients, to evaluate the association between preoperative mental health conditions and health outcomes following bariatric surgery, and to evaluate the association between surgery and the clinical course of mental health conditions. Data Sources We searched PubMed, MEDLINE on OVID, and PsycINFO for studies

published between January 1988 and November 2015. Study quality was assessed using an adapted tool for risk of bias; quality of evidence was rated based on GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) criteria. Findings We identified 68 publications meeting inclusion criteria: 59 reporting the prevalence of preoperative mental health conditions (65 363 patients) and 27 reporting associations between preoperative mental health conditions and postoperative outcomes (50 182 patients). Among patients seeking and undergoing bariatric surgery, the most common mental health conditions, based on random-effects estimates of prevalence, were depression (19% [95% CI, 14%-25%]) and binge eating disorder (17% [95% CI, 13%-21%]). There was conflicting evidence regarding the asso-

ciation between preoperative mental health conditions and postoperative weight loss. Neither depression nor binge eating disorder was consistently associated with differences in weight outcomes. Bariatric surgery was, however, consistently associated with postoperative decreases in the prevalence of depression (7 studies; 8%-74% decrease) and the severity of depressive symptoms (6 studies; 40%-70% decrease). Conclusions and Relevance Mental health conditions are common among bariatric surgery patients—in particular, depression and binge eating disorder. There is inconsistent evidence regarding the association between preoperative mental health conditions and postoperative weight loss. Moderate-quality evidence supports an association between bariatric surgery and lower rates of depression postoperatively.

Ways to Stone Shaytan Out of Your Life By: Fatima Khaled hen Ibrahim was going to sacrifice his son, Shaytan came to him in the form of a man to try and distract him and encourage him to disobey Allah , so Ibrahim pelted stones at him. In part 1 we looked at different sacrifices that we could make to become closer to Allah , but what about when Shaytan comes to us to distract us? How can we pelt the Shaytan out of our lives? Here are 7 productive habits that we can use as our stones against Shaytan. Keep your salah on time This is the first stone you need to throw at Shaytan, as he knows that if you leave your salah, you will be drowning in sins, and your heart will become hard. Salah is a believer’s way of keeping away from sin as Allah says “ Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.” [Qur’an: Chapter 29, Verse 45].But this happens when we are praying with sincerity and humility, otherwise it becomes just a physical ritual. One of the biggest deceptions that shaytan causes us to believe is that you can’t pray when you are committing sin. Salah is not dependent on your sins, and Allah has never said a person should not pray because they did something wrong. Our beloved prophet narrated “By Allah, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than what one of you would do on finding the lost camel in the waterless desert. When he draws near Me by the span of his hand. I draw near him by the length of a cubit and when he draws near Me by the length of a cubit. I draw near him by the length of a fathom and when he draws near Me walking I draw close to him hurriedly.” [Muslim] Take this step to establish your constant connection with Allah . Work on establishing your salah and take the first step to pelting the Shaytan. Stay among righteous company It is hard striving to practice especially on your own, especially today where we have this notion of trying to fit in, and we have a lot of pressure growing up not to stand out. And so the second way to pelt the Shaytan is by choosing righteous company. Choose the com-

W

pany that encourages you to get closer to Allah, that reminds you to pray when you forget, that helps you to learn more about your Creator instead of idle gossip. Choose the kind of company that encourages you to keep away from what displeases Allah . Choose the kind of company that invites angels to stay with you.“No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah, But the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tran-

like they are changing. That is because they are still feeding their mind and soul idle useless material. If you are still mentally consuming material that distracts you from Allah – whether this is in the form of inappropriate TV series, music, books or anything like that, then you leave a door open for Shaytan to come and distract. Feed your mind with knowledge and learn about your Creator and the beloved prophets

quillity descends upon them and Allah remembers them before those who are with Him.” [Ibn Majah] Repent to Allah frequently With this third action, let us stone Shaytan to dust, and build an emotional connection with Allah , by making sincere tawbah. “…Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant…” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 222] As long as you are alive, you can make tawbah, do not let Shaytan deceive you into thinking that any sin is too big for Allah to forgive. For every moment that you are in a state of tawbah repenting for your sins, Allah loves you. Think about how beautiful that is, that Allah loves the servant who turns to Him in repentance.Humble yourself before Allah and tell Him your worries and your fears. Thank Him for giving you this opportunity to draw closer to Him, and let your soul be filled with ease and contentment. Change what you feed your mind The one who is knowledgeable, Shaytan’s hold over them is weak. Sometimes when people make an attempt to get closer to Allah , they find that they struggle, and they don’t feel

because Allah says “…Only those fear Allah , from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.” [Qur’an: Chapter 35, Verse 28]. Start making an attempt to at least reduce -if not cut outthe material that takes you away from the remembrance of your Creator. Incorporate sunnah into your life We’re on the 5th stone now, so let us try to incorporate more sunnah into our life by starting off with 2 simple things, siyam (fasting) and nawafil (voluntary prayers). Let us train ourselves to fast at least 3 days a month and incorporate at least 2 raka’as of sunnah prayers into our day. Why do I say this? Fasting is one of the best methods to get closer to Allah as you become conscious of every action that you make during the day to ensure that your fast is accepted. By incorporating sunnah prayers into your day, you go above and beyond doing what is obligatory and you make an attempt to show your love for Allah by doing something you do not have to do except for the sake of His closeness. If you want to start with an even smaller act, then start off by moistening your tongue with remembrance and glorification of Allah and let the reward of

these light words weigh heavy on your scales. Strengthen ties of kinship How sad would it be that after throwing 5 stones at the Shaytan, you find the 6th stone too heavy? In part 1, we discussed sacrificing our ego and pride to restore ties and kinship and again we will reiterate this because it is a very easy way for Shaytan to cause fitnah (disagreements) in families. The Prophet said “The person who perfectly maintains the ties of kinship is not the one who does it because he gets recompensed by his relatives (for being kind and good to them), but the one who truly maintains the bonds of kinship is the one who persists in doing so even though the latter has severed the ties of kinship with him.” [Bukhari] .Connect with the one who has cut you off. Let go of any ill feelings in your heart and restore any ties of kinship in your family that have been severed. Do this for the sake of Allah and I promise you will be rewarded more than you can ever imagine. Let go of the hurt and pain that your family has caused you and forgive. Let your heart be soft with the remembrance of Allah so that you are able to make these sacrifices. Our family ties are an immense opportunity to gain reward and become closer to Allah . Remember death often This is the last stone that we will throw at the Shaytan and possibly one of the most important stones. None of us know when we will die, and so we must make use of every minute that we have. When you remember death, all of the time, it allows all of the above stones to be thrown easily as it allows you to fight your nafs and do what you know will please Allah . When Shaytan comes to you and tries to encourage you to do what displeases Allah think to yourself that if you were to die at that moment, how would you justify your actions to Allah ? Would you truly have an acceptable justification for missing your salah, or cutting off family ties, or not spending in the way of Allah ? If you pelt Shaytan in these 7 ways, then the 4 sacrifices that we discussed in part 1 will become so much easier. These 7 ways of pelting the Shaytan will only bring you closer to Allah and increase your love for Him. And of course when you love Allah , pleasing Him becomes the best way of life to have.

The School Re-opens

By: Asma Shums Mortgage Broker Yes, vacation over back to school, back to routine. The school has re-opened for a new year, a new semester. The school closes for vacation is opened for summer school, re-opens for new semester. The process of learning is never stopped and if one doesn’t want to learn something then for him or her the school never opens. Grades We may be in lower or higher grades in school but we may be in different grades in our school of life. Our behaviour is the certificate or result to show how much we have learned. Academically we may have scored higher grades, marks, but if you remain to see how much we have learned in the school of life the distinction or marks are ours when we show patience, tolerance, kind-

ness, understanding, and diplomacy with our family, friends and colleagues. When we behave properly with whomever we come in contact. Prize The prize here is our good life, peace of mind, and co-ordinal good healthy relations with people around us. We progress in life emotionally, economically, and happily, and most important rightfully.

Winning is only sometimes, learning is always. How to write a table of any two digit number? For example, table of 87 First write down table of 8 then write down table of 7 beside it. Basically you add the first number and then write the next number, as it is 8 x 2 =16 and 7 x 2 = 14. So we add 1 out of 14 to number 16 that is 16 + 1 =17 and write 4 as it is next to it 174 so answer of 87 x 2 =174 8 x 2 =16 7 x 2 =14 (16 + 1) 174 87 x 2 =174 8 x 3 =24 7 x 3 =21 24 + 2 261

Keep Yourself Happy! By: Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor One of the most important keys to a better life is to keep yourself happy, rather than always living to please everyone else. It’s easy to take on a false sense of responsibility, thinking that it’s your job to keep everybody happy, to “fix” this person, to rescue that person or to solve another person’s problem. Certainly, it is noble and admirable to want to help as many people as possible, and it is always good to reach out to others in need. Too often, though, we get out of balance. At the end, we’re doing everything for everybody else, but we’re not taking any time to keep ourselves happy or healthy. Often it is seen that when we try to keep everybody around us happy by trying to meet all their needs, we are the one’s who ends up suffering. Remember that you should not sacrifice your happiness to keep someone else happy. It may sound a little selfish but there’s a tenuous balance here. Your first priority is to take care of yourself. To do so, you must recognize that some people are still not going to be happy no matter what you do for them. no matter how nice you are and no matter how much time and energy you give them. They have their own issues to deal with or things inside that they need to resolve. This does not mean that you are being selfish or self-centered. We should be givers. There’s a big difference between giving and allowing someone to control you and make you feel guilty until you do what he or she

wants. Once again you should not be unhappy simply to keep someone else happy. Again, if you are allowing that, the other person is not the only one at fault. You may have taken on a false sense of responsibility and now are allowing another person to control you. If you are in a relationship where you do the majority of the giving and always encourage or rescue the other person, that is a clear indication that something is out of balance. You have to make some changes otherwise the relationship will continue to flounder. You must take a stand. You can do it but you need to go to the right person and say,”I care about you, but I’m not going to allow you to keep dumping your problems on me and making my life miserable. I’m not going to let you keep draining all my time and energy. You have to take responsibility.” Remember - You are responsible for keeping yourself happy!! For more information:

A

ir Commodore Amjad Bashir had been my roommate for more than two years during our cadetship days. We cherish many fond memories of the Risalpur Academy. I occupied the upper portion while Amjad stayed on the ground floor of our bunk bed. We started the day rising together for the early morning run (popularly known as the morning jerks), then rushed to the dining hall for meals and attended the same classes in the Education Directorate. Together we attended the parade ground and went to the same squadron for flying. We shared the punishment given by seniors during the day and at night we went to two different stories of the same bunk bed. Course mates named our room in the academy as the Nikko, Nakka room - Nikko for his short height and Nakka for my big nose. On a sunny morning of 21 June 1982, Amjad got airborne with his student, Pilot Officer Tanveer, nick-named ‘Tarzan’ because of his thin physique. Tarzan, on a chase mission, flew as the wingman (No. 2) in the formation of two F-6 aircraft. That was his first chase mission meaning the first solo flight conducted from a single cockpit aircraft. During a chase mission, the student pilot, flying as number 2, simply followed the instructor leading the formation. The instructor, besides his own protection, carried the larger responsibility of the safe return of his number 2, the student pilot. The formation returned to the circuit after familiarization of the flying area. On the first low-go approach, Amjad twice asked his student to check the landing gear was down at the base turn. He confirmed the three green lights and three mechanical indicators protruding out into the cockpit. Satisfied with the approach of his number two, he initiated the low-go also followed by the student. They again entered the landing pattern, this time for a full stop landing by the student pilot. On the base leg turn, Amjad again asked the student to check the three green lights confirming the down position of the

landing gear. The student, helped by the instructor, again positioned himself nicely on the final approach. On short finals, Amjad reported low- go for himself and handed over the student to mobile for a full stop landing. Flight Lieutenant Maratib was the other instructor pilot performing the duty of the Mobile officer. Mobile is a small hut built at the landing threshold of the runway manned by a pilot. He helped on radio from mobile to aircraft in an emergency. However, the main role of the mobile officer remained to check visually the landing gear was in the down position for all the aircraft on final approach. Mobile ensured the safe landing of Pilot Officer Tanveer - Tarzan. Amjad asked the Air Traffic Control Tower for pulling a ‘Close’- a short circuit pattern joining maneuver that directly placed the aircraft on the inner downwind position. Pilot Officer Haider from the Control Tower directed Amjad to delay his pull up as two other aircraft were reporting at the ‘Initials’ position in the circuit pattern. Amjad delayed his pull up and spaced well as number three in the landing pattern. When Amjad reached a position opposite to the Control Tower, Flt. Lt. Kamran in a dual cockpit FT-6 with his student asked clearance from the tower for a straight-in approach. As there were already three aircraft in the landing pattern, Pilot officer Haider from the tower asked him to make an orbit at the long finals position. Amjad, after adjusting on the downwind position reduced to landing speed and lowered the landing gear lever in the cockpit. He did not look at the three greens as the aircraft in front of him made a loose base turn and he adjusted behind by keeping the other aircraft in sight. Flight Lieutenant Kamran, after completing the orbit on long finals position, reported short on fuel. ATC cleared him for final approach behind Amjad who also had to make a wider base turn. A worried Amjad tried to find Flight Lieutenant Kamran by turning right on the final approach but could not see him. At the same moment the drag-chute of the aircraft ahead of Amjad snapped after landing on the runway. Mobile and the ATC simultaneously transmitted a snap

shoot call that created some rush on the radio. Amjad meanwhile reached the short finals when he heard frantic repeated calls from the mobile, ‘aircraft on short finals go round.’ The mobile Officer did not use the call sign of the aircraft ordered to go round. Amjad assumed that Flight Lieutenant Kamran had closed in behind him and was being asked to go round. He did ask ‘which aircraft to go round,’ and expected seeing Flight Lieutenant Kamran going round above him as there was no other aircraft in the landing sequence. Mobile continued shouting the go round calls without using the call sign of any aircraft. By that time Amjad had crossed the threshold of the runway so he rotated the nose and flared out by bringing the throttle back to the idle position for touch down on the ground. He felt something wrong as the wheels were not touching down. The aircraft sank and suddenly he heard the hard rubbing sound of metal with heavy juddering. All the instruments turned red in the cockpit and he could see dust flying around. As an instant reaction, he looked at the landing lever and finding it in neutral position shouted ‘shit.’ He knew exactly what had happened — he had landed on the flat belly without the landing gear. At the same moment he heard repeated calls from the mobile, ‘aircraft just landed you are on fire – eject.’ He recited ‘Kalima’ (religious verses) and pulled the ejection handle. Seconds later he found himself hanging in the air with a parachute and gradually falling down towards the ground. Amjad survived a zero level, zero speed ejection, thus becoming the 5291st survivor of the Martin-Baker (MB seat PKD-10) according to their records. Martin-Baker, keeps a record of all the survivors using their ejection seat. According to Amjad, it happened because

Course mates: Nusrat, Amjad and Afzaal of Murphy’s Law — everything that could go wrong, went wrong in a sequence. In the F-6 aircraft it was important to bring the landing lever to the neutral position after raising the landing gear. When he delayed his pull for close he forgot to bring down the landing lever to neutral from the up position as he was adjusting in the landing pattern behind the two other aircraft. During the base turn, when he lowered the landing lever down, he in fact brought it to the neutral position, but his mind registered lowering of the landing gear. Emergency calls of snap shoot and low-on-fuel originated within a span of one minute. Aircraft ahead of him made a wider base turn. He remained busy adjusting his position by looking outside the cockpit for other aircraft. It was too late when he finally looked for the landing lever. All the three main characters engaged in the act missed some necessary action on their part: 1.Amjad missed the three greens call at the base leg while adjusting his position and blocked R/T by the tower and the mobile due to the snapped shoot. 2.ATC did not notice that the three greens call was missed at the base turn and issued the landing clearance. 3.When the mobile officer spotted the aircraft without gear down on short finals, he ordered the go round without using the call sign of the aircraft. The Inquiry Board blamed all three characters. Flight Lieutenant Amjad and Flight Lieutenant Maratib, the mobile officer, received six months of loss of seniority. Pilot officer Haider, the officer in the control tower was awarded three months loss of seniority. None of them felt bad about the punishment because Flight Lieutenant Amjad had survived the deadly crash. Amjad later retired from service after rising to the rank of Air Commodore.

KASHMIR

A Kashmir statement

By: ASHRAF JEHANGIR QAZI AKISTAN’S policy towards Kashmir (and Afghanistan) is a metaphor for its governance at home. They are dysfunctional. We cannot implement longer-term policies, and short-term policies don’t work. We have tried shorter-term Kashmir solutions ranging from diplomacy to dialogue to violence. They all failed as have our several shortlived policies towards human rights protections, human resource development, socioeconomic development, security, corruption, counterterrorism, institutional reform, etc. Only longer-term policies can effectively address such fundamental issues. Former Chinese president Jiang Zemin told a joint session of the Pakistan parliament that Kashmir was an issue inherited from history and its solution should be sought in that context. In other words, it had no short-term solution. Ignoring his common-sense advice has proved unwise. It has neither alleviated the sufferings of the Kashmiris nor has it served their freedom struggle. Even a longer-term strategy may fail for several reasons including the inability or unwillingness of Pakistan’s leadership to clean up the country’s image and face down competing centres of power: India’s welldocumented crimes against humanity in Kashmir and its Hindutva pathology; and the irresponsible indifference of the international community towards the dangerous and hideous human rights situation in Indiaheld Kashmir. Pakistan’s reliance on jihadi ‘assets’ has resulted in comprehensive jihadi ‘blowback’. Its foreign policy is determined by unelected and incompetent decision-makers who largely operate from behind security screens. This has significantly disabled Pakistan’s diplomacy. There are hardly any international takers today for Pakistan’s case on Kashmir and other issues. Only an assertive Foreign Office can alter this nonsensical situation. A ‘soft state’ is one that knows what it must do but cannot or does not do it. Pakistan knows CPEC cannot be a substitute for good governance including a decent foreign policy. Yet it acts as if CPEC is a magic

P

wand for all its problems. The elites of a soft and failing state always see the costs of state failure as less than the costs of state reform. Unless Pakistan begins to transform itself it will never be a credible strategic partner for a successfully emerging China. The credibility of any policy statement by a leader is judged by perceptions of his leadership and the image of the country under his leadership. A bold and realistic policy statement by the prime minister might signal a departure from our pathetic leadership and governance norms. This may be seen as ‘great expectations’. A prime minister’s policy statement might include: — his commitment to promoting the political and human rights of the Kashmiri people in accordance with existing UN resolutions; — his hope that both sides will avoid mutually exclusive positions on Kashmir to enable movement towards an acceptable settlement; — his willingness, despite current circumstances, to seriously engage with his Indian counterpart to resolve issues of core concern to both countries and other issues on the agenda of the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue; — both sides will need to implement politically difficult decisions to build mutual trust and confidence; — he supports the Shimla Agreement as it recognises the positions of both sides on Kashmir. Accordingly, neither side can require the other to change its position as a precondition for dialogue; — his readiness, in consultation with Kashmiri opinion, to consider some of the tentative understandings reportedly reached in the back-channel talks of 2004-6 to bring about a climate in which progress towards a mutually acceptable settlement of Jammu and Kashmir is facilitated; — an agreed settlement could be embodied in a new UNSC resolution that could be unanimously adopted; — mutually acceptable modalities for the participation of Kashmiri representatives in a Kashmir settlement process need to be worked out; — agreed mechanisms for the maintenance of peace along the LoC need to be reinforced by strong political leadership in both countries; — the tragic human and political rights situation in India-held Kashmir needs to be urgently addressed as it is incompatible with an uninterrupted settlement process; — bilateral and Kashmir-related CBMs need to be restored and expanded; — win-win progress may be slow and difficult, but once achieved, it should be made irreversible; — the support of public opinion, including

civil and political society, in both countries for sustained progress towards a settlement acceptable to the people of Kashmir, Pakistan and India, should be a shared and governing priority; — a breakthrough towards a settlement of Jammu and Kashmir can bring about a climate in which major initiatives like a no-war pact, no first use of nuclear weapons, enhanced trading, transit, travel and tourism arrangements, joint ventures and significantly increased cultural and media exchanges become feasible; — some of these initiatives may be implemented earlier to bring about a conducive climate for substantive movement on Kashmir; and — his invitation to the Indian prime minister and suggestion that work on drafting a joint prime minister statement on the sidelines of the Islamabad Saarc Summit should commence. While these points are not new their public advocacy and implementation would be. There will be criticisms that such a policy approach is tantamount to abject surrender. This is not so. Pakistan would neither have to compromise its conventional and strategic deterrence nor its Kashmir commitments. What the prime minister would need to do is honestly tell the nation there are no

short-term or military-cum-militant solutions to the Kashmir dispute, and avoidable confrontation with India entails significant avoidable costs without helping the Kashmir cause. But a prime minister beset by a sea of troubles may not wish to even consider, leave alone pursue, such a policy course. That would be unfortunate as no breakthrough can be brought about clandestinely. Meanwhile, Modi’s rank communalism and his rants against Pakistan appear to rule out any prospect of a positive response. Nevertheless, there is no realistic alternative to steadfastly pursuing a consistent and realistic longer-term Kashmir policy if there is eventually to be normalcy in the Valley and prosperity and security in the region. Even our Chinese friends will tell us the CPEC was never meant to be a substitute for a common-sense national and foreign policy. MIRACLE

SPECIAL

Menace of Islamic State and Islamophobia

The ongoing rise of IS (Islamic state, also called DAISH) along with growing Islamophobia are quite irksome. The embattled region of Mid East is in trouble so is Pakistan where “Operation Zarb-i-Azb” by the Pakistan Army in North Waziristan has successfully eliminated the threat of TTP and other militant organisations including Al Qaeda, the Haqqanis, Uzbeks and Uighurs. Also, the ‘infrastructure of terrorism’ which existed there such as training camps, arms caches, communications facilities etc., has all been successfully destroyed. In this operation, more than 4,000 terrorists have been killed and hundreds captured. As a result of the military pressure, the TTP has broken up splitting into several factions. All militants in the area have disappeared resulting in the sharp decline in the frequency of terrorist attacks. The Wagah bombing against the soft target of innocent civilians was an act of desperation, yet the public opinion is firmly behind the anti-terrorist campaign. Actually, the Wagah suicide attack has strengthened the domestic consensus in favour of the ongoing ‘operation zarb e azb.’ Shocking development: The provincial government of Balochistan has conveyed a confidential report to Islamabad, and the relevant law enforcement agencies have been warned of the “increased footprints” of militant organisation “IS” in two provinces of Pakistan namely Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunwa. This indicates a huge trouble ahead; like Iraq and Syria, there is a bad news in the making for the people of Pakistan and a real challenge for Pakistan Military and Civil Armed Forces. The sources disclosed, the IS has claimed to have recruited a massive 10 to 12,000 followers from the Hangu and Kurram Agency tribal areas. “It has been reliably learnt that Daish has offered some elements of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Ahl-e-Sunnat Wai Jamat (ASWJ) to join

hands in Pakistan. Daish has also formed a ten-member “Strategic Planning Wing,” in retaliation to the army-led Zarb-i-Azb operation. A heightened vigilance and security measures in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are surely needed to prevent and pre-empt such attacks. Obviously, the US withdrawal is an opportunity for the IS to focus on Pakistan and Afghanistan. In other words, Pakistan faces a perceived threat which can become real threat if Pakistan security apparatus fails to check footprints of the “IS” which is headed by Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi. Furthermore, wall-chalking in support of IS in some cities of Pakistan, including Karachi and Khanewal is quite thought provoking. Although, the challenge facing the West is of lone-wolf sympathizer attacks, yet the brutal IS has been actively involved in killing hundreds of Muslims and some American, Canadian and UK citizens, including journalists and aid workers. The problem is the IS organization has been succeeding in having attracted foreign fighters from every corner of the world, including Canada. The latest federal report from Ottawa, indicated more than 130 Canadians abroad taking part in terrorist activities, and another 80 returned to Canada. (http://www.yorkregion.com/ news-story/4941649-no-connection-between-ottawa-gunman-and-quebec-attacker-rcmp-say/) It seems as if the ferocious Islamic State elements intend to turn the West against “Islam and the Muslims” through their dirty inhuman work. If the “IS” is really targeting Islam, it needs to be looked at carefully by the international community without prejudice. The spread of Islam is based on logic, not forcible conversion - there is no compulsion in the matter of religion. The Quran is not a man made book; it was revealed as the final version to the final Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the angel

Gabriel. The said book is guidance and a manual of successful pious life for all humankind including the Muslims. Unless read and understood in entirety, there should be no nonsense opinion about the noble Qur^an. Sadly, the media only tries to sell misinformation to the naive public that is too blind to see the truth; reliance on the media news without confirmation is unethical. As the Quran makes sense, Islamophobia stands no chance. Lack of responsibility: Shame on the religious zealots who interpret erroneous picture of Islam and spread radical and extreme views among masses to inflame the fragile situation. Other factor is, despite the airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the radical group enjoys a “successful recruitment strategy” through social media attracting young Westerners. The question is what are the root causes that lead the Western youths to forsake their identities and lifestyles to swell ISIS ranks as fighters? Historically speaking, Iraqis were rich people living with the highest quality and same is true for Libya. Also, the world back then was a much safer place. Both Russia and China were against regime change in Libya and Iraq. Russia opposed helping and arming rebels in Syria as well. Bigger trouble: The Islamic State (faking) has become the most compelling and attractive organisation for the troubled/confused/vulnerable youths around the world in a very short time. Major threat: The so called Islamic state continues to cause even greater unrest in countries where Muslims aren’t a majority. The Islamic State group is bent upon tearing apart the whole Middle East making a mess/unrest for the present and future generations. The countries with heavy Muslim population are nervous for sound reason: India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population, but is in shock after Islamic

State sympathisers have turned up from Kashmir in the north to Tamil Nadu in the south. Suspicions will easily be raised by Islamophobes in the west including Canada, the US, and Europe. Chaos: The so called “Islamic State” has already sparked political and theological instability across the Middle East, and d if they continue expanding, the region would certainly slip into even greater turmoil. As, the terrorist “IS” has prompted blasts and fighting in Lebanon, Jordan and Kuwait, the governments are worried thatt sleeper cells may be striking any moment. No wonder, Saudi Arabia is extremely worried that the Islamic State group will come after them with force. In a recent interview, a senior Islamic State defector said their next stop would d be Saudi Arabia, which includes Mecca and Medina. (http://www.al-monitor.com// pulse/security/2014/07/syria-oppositionis-saudi-arabia.html). Saudi rulers are now in full panic, sending money to the Lebanese army, funding UN counter-terrorism efforts, and even getting senior Muftis to condemn the group. Guess what! The Saudi government is most likely to be asking Pakistan Army to security-guard against the IS. As terrorism has no religion, the faking Islamic State (IS) cannot be preaching nor can it be practising Islam; the barbaric force is most likely a sponsored proxy terrorist force aimed at showing “ISLAM” as a bad guy. Motive of course seems to be the commercial profiting. There is a need of collective effort and d shared response from media, civilian institutions, political parties and security forces to combat terrorism, radicalism and d extremism. Islam teaches only moderation, yet a well funded education programme is need off the hour to eradicate radicalization and d Islamophobia in the West.

Pakistan Cricket Board urges Shahid Afridi to consider retirement from cricket

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi’s long stint in international cricket is going to come to an end with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reportedly giving the all-rounder a chance to officially announce his retirement from the game, during the country’s T20 series against West Indies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) later this month. According to various reports, the PCB wants the 36-year-old to retire from the game and will give the cricketer a chance to say farewell in a dignified manner with plans to pick him for the T20 squad that will face the West Indies. Afridi had previously said he would retire

from T20 cricket post the ICC T20 World Cup in India but has retracted his statement claiming he still wants to play the shortest format of the game and is available for selection. “Apparently the board and national selectors don’t agree and feel Afridi should retire gracefully although he can continue playing in the foreign leagues and domestic cricket. The plan is to talk to Afridi and explain to him that since the selectors are now building a new T20 squad for the next World T20, there is no place for him. He will be offered the chance to be included in the Pakistan squad for the T20 series against the West Indies as 16th player and

play in the matches”, a source said, as quoted by the Hindu. The 36-year-old had a rocky time during his last stint as captain. He had to step down post Pakistan’s disastrous campaign in the 2016 T20 World Cup and has not represented his country since then. He has also been repeatedly ignored by the selectors, which is headed by another former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq. Afridi has played 27

Test matches, 398 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 98 T20 Internationals in a career spanning 20 years. He holds the record for the highest number of sixes hit in the 50-over format with 351 runs to his name. Source:Cricinfo

England’s tour of Bangladesh: Jos Buttler defends captain Eoin Morgan’s call to dropout England’s tour of Bangladesh had been called into question after an attack on a cafe in Dhaka in July that killed 20 hostages. Eoin Morgan is very much still the captain of the England one-day international cricket team says the man who stepped in to replace him for the tour of Bangladesh Jos Buttler. Morgan and batsman Alex Hales both decided not to go on the tour as they were concerned, despite reassurances from team security chief Reg Dickason after he came back from a fact finding trip, over their safety. The tour – which begins on September 30 and will include two Tests and three ODIs – had been called into question after an attack on a cafe in Dhaka in July which saw 20 hostages killed, including 18 foreigners. Morgan especially came in for some criticism over his decision — former captains Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain leading the charge with both questioning wheth-

er he could resume being skipper. Test captain Alastair Cook by contrast has said he will skipper the side against the Bangladeshis. However, Buttler said the former captains’ speculation over Morgan’s future was nonsense. “He’s very much still the captain of the England ODI side,” said Buttler. “He’s done a fantastic job over the last 18 months. He’s been one of the main reasons, if not the main reason, for the turnaround in fortunes. The style of cricket he’s got the side playing is something we want to continue and keep playing that brand of cricket,” added the 26-year-old. Buttler, who made his ODI debut back in 2012, said Morgan would have not taken the decision lightly. “There has been some unfair criticism,” he said. “Cricket is not the be-all and end-all. “He has made the decision that is right for him and it is not one he has taken lightly. He has come to one

which he is comfortable with and people should respect that. Reading things in the press and having a lot of information about it, you do have some worries. But you try and think long and hard about it, let the dust settle for a bit and try and work through it logically. “For me personally I’m happy to go. It’s a completely individual position, as it has to be; people are different and view things differently – and everyone completely respects that it is a personal decision.” Last week saw Morgan outline his concerns, with the 30-year-old Irishman saying

he had been influenced by a bomb exploding at a 2010 Indian Premier League match in Bangalore that he was involved in and the violent background to his brief spell in the 2013/14 Dhaka Premier Division. Morgan, has however, since returned to India for further spells in the lucrative IPL. http://indianexpress.com/
