Dreaming for the Dust to Settle !
eyond doubt, the biased reporting, misreporting or lying is morally and legally wrong. Maybe, the chronic disease of building fake stories is a good business for some, but it infringes the rights of all others who have to suffer because of it. Despite the bitterness, the truth is always beautiful. It simply speaks itself without real effort. In simpler words, one has to remember what was fabricated while the truth remains the same and there is no need to recall the verbatim. Some champions of Pakistani democracy are “a bunch of liars,” they don’t focus on their main task; rather they are obsessively motivated to monopolize power to rule for their own selfish agendas. Since they are involved in violating the constitutional articles including article 6, article 63 and many others by ignoring the best interests of the country, they do contribute in the discomfort of the masses indeed. The fact is democracy is said to be existing when it is of the people, by the people and for the people. Here, the word “people” means people who are in majority, nevertheless, the rich elite always manages to rule the huge majority of general public consisting of the poor masses. Eye brows are raised over the ‘polluted journalism’ which includes bashing, ridiculing and creating hype in the hot pursuit of rewards in cash or kind from the unknown sources.
Because of this nonsense, Pakistan is stuck in a cul-de-sac. Of course, the ongoing dilemma is injurious for an overall health of the country and its inhabitants. Media is a tool for the rich (the powerful elite), while the poor and the oppressed are just the tools to be used in favour of the powerful elite. Among other things, it’s usually noticed that some groups do have a dirty habit of conveniently encouraging media to do biased reporting. According to Malcolm X, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control minds of the masses.” In fact, the media does have the capability to generate public opinion as intended to satisfy the vested interests. But, the problem is the ‘unfriendly attitude’ of the main stream media towards the oppressed public in general. On the other hand, the competition among the media businesses is in a desperate need of giving the truthful information by being objective and balanced in reporting. And the media is always bound by a code of ethics to continue as competitive and credible under all circumstances. A successful journalism has to be conscientious, because presenting the distorted facts is unethical and unlawful. The job of Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) is to monitor to make sure that no TV channel is violat-
ing the terms and conditions of the license. If PEMRA in the past had fined the TV channels found guilty of violating the code of ethics, the ground reality would have been quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ‘never ending cycle’ of “tugs-of-war” between power-players is a bad news and now the eruption of civil-military tussle and the media hype to further the deterioration is something that would inflict too much damage to the country. Obviously, the incompetence of elected representatives to come up with a political answer to the multiplying challenges does get compounded by the substandard TV debates. We still remember executive-judiciary confrontation that topped the media charts for around three years. And the gossips about the Military establishment’s anger with the judiciary and the civil military rift are more than frightening. To figure out is expected to remain complicated for some time unless scoping beneath the surface is carried out to analyze the dilemma. Damage control and fixing the Snags: By the way, a massive education program is to be introduced to eradicate the general illiteracy followed by computer literacy campaign so that people are able to know the difference between right and wrong. • Practising shamanism and idolizing the dead saints as redeem-
ers of human problems has to be banned. • Land reforms are desperately needed to eliminate the curse of feudalism. Restoration of writ of the State: • All responsible for terrorism have to be crushed brutally. • The terrorists, extortionists, killer gangs, saboteurs and arsonists are making a mockery of the Law enforcement and legal system. They need to be nailed for summary punishments. • The FATA region should be declared as province at par with other provinces of Pakistan. Crushing the separatist movements and insurgency is the absolute necessity, as it is a proxy war to undo Pakistan. Only the Pak Military can finish the job if allowed by the government. Unfortunately, there are similarities between Egypt and Pakistan situation. To conclude: • A stage is being set in Pakistan unless the incompetent regime comes to senses before it’s too late. • The media is divided and judiciary integrity is under attack. The fear is, with the military intervention in the best interest of the country, all democratic gains would vanish once again. The bottom line: If the media focuses on achieving the goal of opinion building based on balanced truthful journalism on merit, no power on the Earth can break the country.

3 PAKISTAN After water, India targets Saarc Summit Dhul Hajah 28. 1437 September 30, 2016
After expressing his desire to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that he and some other members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) will boycott its 19th summit to be held in Islamabad in November. The announcement came when slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ were heard loud and clear in demonstrations and rallies across the Indian Held Kashmir (IHK), where Pakistani flags are regularly raised together with coffins of Kashmiris, killed by Indians, wrapped in green and white. The expected announcement was made by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday, which did not specify which other Saarc member states would also skip this summit. Traditionally, New Delhi has been able to bully Bhutan and Bangladesh on such matters. In addition to Bhutan and Bangladesh, Afghanistan will also boycott the summit, reported the Indian media .The traditional invitation which requires Pakistan’s foreign minister to personally travel and meet with heads of Saarc member states has not even been initiated as yet.Formally informing the Saarc Secre-
tariat of not attending the summit is also not unexpected and is in line with other desperate measures that New Delhi is preparing to take, while not changing the reality inside IHK. According to a statement from the spokesman at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, India has conveyed to the current Saarc chair Nepal that increasing cross-border terrorism attacks in the region and growing interference in internal affairs of member states by “one country” have created an environment that is not conducive to the successful holding of Saarc Summit.“India remains steadfast in its commitment to regional cooperation, connectivity and contacts but believes that this can only go on in an environment free of terror. In the prevailing circumstances, Government of India is unable to attend this proposed summit. We believe that some other Saarc members will also not attend,” said the statement. Commenting on the development, Spokesperson of Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry uploaded his status on social networking website Twitter as follows: “Pakistan has noted from Indian spokesperson’s tweet on Indian announcement about their refusal to participate in the 19th Saarc Summit being hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad this November. While we have not received any official communication in this regard, the Indian announcement is unfortunate. “Pakistan remains committed to peace and regional cooperation. We will continue to work to that end in the larger interest of people of this region. “As for the excuse used by India, the world knows that it is India that has been preparing and financing terror in Pakistan. Public confessions by Kulbhushan Yadav, Indian intelligence agency RAW’s officer, is a living proof besides many other evidences. It is India that has violated the international law and the UN Charter by interfering in the internal matters of a sovereign state, Pakistan.” Source: The news.com

Indus Water Treaty (IWT) was a mutually agreed arrangement between India and Pakistan brokered by the World Bank in 1960 and neither country could unilaterally separate itself from the treaty. The prime minister was chairing a meeting attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, National Security Advisor General (r) Nasir Janjua, foreign secretary, Military Operations director general and other senior civil and military officials. The meeting expressed deep concerns on the increase in systematic human rights violations in Indian-Held Kashmir (IHK) and condemned brutal use of force by Indian security forces. Nawaz said that the world was witness that Pakistan had given tremendous sacrifices for global peace. The country had shown unequalled and unprecedented restraint despite great provocation, he added. The meeting agreed that Pakistan would continue to strive for the region’s peace with a view to enable its people the progress and prosperity of the 21st century. At the same time, the meeting also agreed that Pakistan was fully capable of meeting any internal or external security threat with the complete resolve of its people and val-

The prime minister reiterated that violence on Kashmiris – fighting for their right to self-determination as promised by UNSC resolutions – would never be tolerated and the oppressed Kashmiris deserve not only Pakistan’s support but also the support of the entire world. Pakistan would continue to extend its moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiris until the issue of Kashmir was resolved as per aspirations of Kashmiri people, Nawaz said. Germany: Dresden mosque bombed in ‘xenophobic’ attack
Syrian troops launch major ground assault for Aleppo
Bomb attacks hit a mosque and a convention centre in the eastern German city of Dresden, police said on Tuesday, adding the motive appeared to be xenophobia and nationalism. No one was injured in the explosions late on Monday in a city that has become a hotspot for far-right protests and hate crimes following a major influx of migrants and refugees into Germany. The imam, his wife and two sons were in the Fatih Camii mosque at the time of the blast. Police said they found the remains of homemade explosives at both crime scenes. “Although no one has so far claimed responsibility, we must assume that there was a xenophobic motive,” Dresden police chief Horst Kretschmar said. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the mosque attack was “all the more scandalous” because it happened on the eve of the 10th annual meeting of the German Islam Conference. Police linked the explosion at the congress centre to celebrations set to take place next week in Dresden marking the 26th anniversary of German unification, which is to be attended by German President Joachim Gauck. “We have now switched to crisis mode,” Kretzxchmar said, as police deployed to guard the city’s two mosques and an Islamic cultural centre. About 300 worshippers regularly attend Friday prayers at the Fatih Camii mosque, which is located a short distance from Dresden’s historic centre. The explosion at the mosque was detonated at 1953 GMT on Monday. The force of the blast pushed the front door of the building inward and left the building covered with soot, police said. The explosion at the convention centre - located about 2 kilometres from the Fatih Camii mosque and on the River Elbe, which runs through Dresden - occurred about half an hour later. The heat caused by the explosion at the centre destroyed the side of a decorative glass cube in an open area in the congress building and resulted in parts of the building being evacuated. Dresden, a Baroque city in Germany’s ex-communist east, is also the birthplace of the anti-immigration PEGIDA street movement, short for Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident. Its members have angrily protested against
the influx of refugees and migrants that last year brought one million asylum seekers to Europe’s biggest economy. About a dozen demonstrations are planned over the weekend, by both PEGIDA and by anti-fascist groups. Saxony state premier Stanislaw Tillich called the “cowardly” bombings an “attack on freedom of religion and on the values of an enlightened society” that could easily have claimed lives. Far-right hate crimes targeting shelters for asylum seekers in Saxony rose to 106 in 2015, with another 50 recorded in the first half of this year. In an annual report outlining progress since reunification, the government warned last week that growing xenophobia and rightwing “extremism” could threaten peace in eastern Germany. De Maiziere said he understood that many Muslims in Germany did not wish to apologise for every act of “terrorism” that is carried out in the name of Islam. But he said expected more from the Muslim organisations in Germany. “I think it would be advisable that the security debate becomes more intense and also more public in the future,” he said. “Political influence from abroad in Germany through religion is something we cannot accept,” said de Maiziere. However, Muslim leaders attending the 10th anniversary of the dialogue forum hit back. It was wrong, “to brand Muslims as representatives of foreign powers and to speak of them as having a representive role”, said the secretary general of the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs Bekir Alboga. Syrian forces launched a major ground offensive on a rebel-held district of Aleppo, the biggest assault yet in a new campaign aimed at wiping out rebel forces and retaking a city that’s key to ending the five-year war. Syrian state TV said on Tuesday that troops captured Farafra district, near Aleppo’s famous citadel, and fighting was under way near the historic core of the northern city. A military official told AFP news agency that government forces “retook control of all of the Farafra district” and were now “demining the area”. The official said the advance “comes as a continuation of the military operation that was announced that includes an aerial component and an artillery and ground component”. Aleppo has endured the worst aerial onslaught since the start of the war in 2011 with more than 400 people killed, hundreds of others wounded, and buildings flattened since a short-lived ceasefire broke down last week. Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters told Al Jazeera that pro-government forces, including Shia militias, carried out “a ground push” in the Bab al-Antakya district. “They [rebels] said that they repelled that attack and killed a number of pro-government militia” during fighting that lasted a couple of hours, said Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford, reporting from across the Turkish border in Gaziantep. Stratford said a website run by the FSA reported two attacks in which 11 progovernment militiamen and Syrian soldiers were killed by rebel fighters, “keeping them from moving forward”. It was not possible to independently confirm any of the claims. In the district of Handarat, north of Aleppo, government forces also advanced against the rebels, he said. Government fighter jets backed by Russia’s air force also continued
Nine out of 10 people globally live in places with poor air quality, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said, blaming a worldwide air pollution crisis for being a major factor in millions of deaths per
year. In a new report released on Tuesday, the health agency said 92 percent of people live in areas where air quality exceeds WHO limits. It also published an interactive map detailing the global “health emergency”. “Some three million deaths a year are linked to exposure to outdoor air pollution,” the UN body said in the report, which was based on data from 3,000 sites across the world. “Indoor air pollution can be just as deadly. In 2012, an estimated 6.5 million deaths (11.6 percent of all global deaths) were associated with indoor and outdoor air pollution together.” According to WHO, almost all of the air pollution-related deaths are due to non-communicable diseases, such cardiovascular illnesses, stroke, chronic ob-
structive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. And 90 percent of the deaths reportedly occured in low and middle-income countries, with nearly two-thirds of them occurring in WHO’s Southeast Asia and Western Pacific regions. “Air pollution continues take a toll on the health of the most vulnerable populations - women, children and the older adults,” said Flavia Bustreo, assistant director general at WHO. The problem is most acute in cities, but air in rural areas is worse than many think, WHO experts said. Pollution “affects practically all countries in the world and all parts of society”, Maria Neira, head of the WHO’s department of health and environment, said. “Fast action to tackle air pollution can’t come soon

Grey told The Canadian Press after the hearing. The judge did not immediately issue a ruling on Thursday’s arguments and no timeline was given for a decision. In February, 2015, Quebec court Judge Eliana Marengo told El-Alloul that her case involving the province’s automobile insurance board and her impounded vehicle would not proceed as long as she was wearing the hijab. She refused to remove it and the judge put the case off. It was ultimately settled when the car was returned.
Grey said on Thursday that he believes the Marengo’s decision regarding the hijab violated his client’s charter rights, but said opposing lawyers argued that the issue could not be settled by a declaratory judgment. He said a judicial complaint he and another lawyer filed against Marengo on El-Alloul’s behalf was rejected in February.A spokesperson for the body that investigates judicial complaints would not confirm this information or any other details of the case, citing confidentiality. El-Alloul, who was present for the proceedings, has been
to target the city and its outskirts. Video obtained by Al Jazeera showed the latest air strikes on Tuesday with rescue crews rushing to the scene to pull people from under the rubble. Residents said bunker-busting bombs were dropped in the al-Shaar neighbourhood killing 24 civilians, including 15 people from the same family. The historic quarter of Aleppo, one of the world’s oldest cities, is home to the Umayyad Mosque, a UNESCO world heritage site. The 11thcentury minaret of the famed mosque collapsed in April 2013 during fighting. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, confirmed that government forces were advancing on the old quarter. “There was intense shelling earlier. It seemed the [government] was preparing for the attack,” said Ibrahim Alhaj, a member of the Syrian Civil Defence, volunteer first-responders also known as the “White Helmets”. He added news from the front line suggests a large mobilisation of progovernment militias in the old city. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Syrian military official in Damascus told the AP news agency that operations in Aleppo will continue until “terrorists” in the eastern parts of the city are “wiped out”. If President Bashar al-Assad’s forces do recapture the ancient city it would mark a major turning point in the war, which has killed an estimated 400,000 people and displaced millions. “It will be a big victory for the regime if it takes Aleppo,” opposition activist Mahmoud al-Basha told Al Jazeera. “Aleppo is the biggest stronghold for FSA. There are no more cities for the FSA in Syria they lost Homs, there is no FSA in Hama and Damascus.” Syria’s army announced an operation to retake the opposition-held east of Aleppo city following the collapse of the Russia-US orchestrated truce. Al Jazeera’s Stratford said people he spoke to “are literally terrified” at the prospect of a ground operation. “They feel very helpless. They have completely given up on any kind of diplomatic effort. They have completely lost faith in what the international community is saying,” he said. At least 250,000 people still live in the besieged part of Aleppo. Source: Al-Jazeera
enough,” she added, urging governments to cut the number of vehicles on the road, improve waste management and promote clean cooking fuel. “Solutions exist with sustainable transport in cities, solid waste management, access to clean household fuels and cook-stoves, as well as renewable energies and industrial emissions reductions.” In March, the UN released a report saying that 80 percent of city dwellers across the world were breathing poor quality air, noting that only two percent of cities in low and middle-income countries had air which met the UN body’s standards. “Urban air pollution continues to rise at an alarming rate, wreaking havoc on human health,” Neira said. doing well since last year’s high-profile proceedings, Grey said. She is a strong lady and she has held up very well since it happened,” he said. Last year El-Alloul refused more than $50,000 raised on her behalf through a crowdfunding campaign, suggesting the money be used to tell others’ stories. Despite her complaint being rejected, Grey said his client is still very interested in having her rights declared. “She’s doing it on principle,” he said. “She’s doing it because what happened was wrong.” Source: thestar.com/news

Muharram: The Start of the Islamic Calendar
By: Muhammad Taqi Usmani uharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, “The number of the months according to Allah is twelve months (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day in which He created heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified”. These four months, according to the authentic traditions are the months of Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, has declared: “One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab.” The specific mention of these four months does not mean that any other month has no sanctity, because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah. In fact, every month, out of the twelve, is originally equal to the other, and there is no inherent sanctity, which may be attributed to one of them in comparison to other months. When Allah Almighty chooses a particular time for His special blessings, then it acquires sanctity out of His grace. Thus, the sanctity of these four months was recognized right from the days of Sayyidina Ibrahim. Since the Pagans of Makkah attributed themselves to Sayyidina Ibrahim they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months.
M
FAITH
In the Shariah of our Holy Prophet the sanctity of these months was upheld and the Holy Quran referred to them as the “sanctified months”. The month of Muharram has certain other characteristics peculiar to it, which are specified below. Fasting during the month The Holy Prophet has said: “The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram.” Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet, the one who fasts in these days out of his own will and choice is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. The Hadith cited above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are most reward-able ones among the Nafl fasts i.e. the fasts one observes out of his own choice without being obligatory on him. The Hadith does not mean that the award promised for fasts of Muharram can be achieved only by fasting for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit. Therefore, one should avail of this opportunity as much as he can. The day of Ashurah Although the month of Muharram is a sanctified month as a whole, yet, the 10th day of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days. The day is named Ashurah. According to the Holy companion Ibn Abbas. The Holy Prophet , when migrated to Madinah, found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa (Moses) and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the Pharaoh was drowned in its water. On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet said, “We are more closely related to Musa than you” and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashurah. (Abu Dawood) It is also reported in a number of authentic tradi-
tions that in the beginning, fasting on the day of Ashurah was obligatory for the Muslims. It was later that the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory and the fast on the day of ”Ashurah was made optional. Sayyidah Aishah has said: “When the Holy Prophet came to Madinah, he fasted on the day of Ashurahh and directed the people to fast it. But when the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory, the obligation of fasting was confined to Ramadan and the obligatory nature of the fast of Ashurah was abandoned. One can fast on this day, if he so wills, or can avoid fasting, if he so wills.” However, the Holy Prophet used to fast on the day of Ashurah even after the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. Abdullah Ian Masud reports that the Holy Prophet preferred the fast of Ashurah to the fast of other days and preferred the fast of Ramadhan to the fast of Ashurahh. (Bukhari and Muslim) In short, it is established through a number of authentic hadith that fasting on the day of Ashurah is Sunnah of the Holy Prophet and makes one entitled to a great reward. According to another Hadith, it is more advisable that the fast of Ashurah should either be prefixed or suffixed by another fast. It means that one should fast two days: the 9th an 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th of it. The reason of this additional fast as mentioned by the Holy Prophet is that the Jews used to fast on the day of Ashurah alone, and the Holy Prophet wanted to distinguish the Islamic-way of fasting from that of Jews. Therefore, he advised the Muslims to add another fast to that of Ashurah. Some traditions signify another feature of the day of Ashurah. According to these traditions one should be more generous to his family by providing more food to them on this day as compared to other days. These traditions are not very
authentic according to the science of Hadith. Yet, some Scholars like Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban have accepted them as reliable. What is mentioned above is all that is supported through authentic sources about Ashurah. However, there are some legends and misconceptions with regard to Ashurah that have managed to find their way into the minds of the ignorant, but have no support of authentic Islamic sources, some very common of them are these: This is the day in which Adam was created. This is the day in which Ibrahim was born. This is the day in which Allah accepted the repentance of Sayyidina Ibrahim. This is the day on which the Qiyamah (dooms-day) will take place. Whoever takes bath in the day of Ashurah will never get ill. As mentioned earlier, the event of Karbala is one of the most tragic events of our history, but the Holy Prophet has forbidden us from holding the mourning ceremonies on the death of any person..... To quote only one of them: “He is not from our group who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah.” Blessings of Muharram It is the first month of the Islamic Calendar. The meaning of the word:- The word “Muharram” means “Forbidden.” Even before Islam, this month was always known as a scared month in which all unlawful acts were forbidden, prominently the shedding of blood.A blessing of Muharram:- There are many bounties of this month, especially the tenth of Muharram. “Allah may forgive thee of thy sins that which is past and that which is to come.” (Al-Fath) was revealed on the 10th of Muharram. unmatched on the planet, says Swiss bank The sugar industry began funding research that cast doubt on sugar’s role in heart disease -- in part by pointing the finger at fat -- as early as the 1960s, according to an analysis of newly uncovered documents. The analysis published Monday is based on correspondence between a sugar trade group and researchers at Harvard University, and is the latest example showing how food and beverage makers attempt to shape public understanding of nutrition. In 1964, the group now known as the Sugar Association internally discussed a campaign to address “negative attitudes toward sugar” after studies began emerging linking sugar with heart disease, according to documents dug up from public archives. The following year the group approved “Project 226,” which entailed paying Harvard researchers today’s equivalent of $48,900 for an article reviewing the scientific literature, supplying materials they wanted reviewed, and receiving drafts of the article. The resulting article published in 1967 (part one and part two) concluded there was “no doubt” that reducing cholesterol and saturated fat was the only dietary intervention needed to prevent heart disease. The researchers overstated the consistency of the literature on fat and cholesterol, while downplaying studies on sugar, according to the analysis. “Let me assure you this is quite what we had in mind and we look forward to its appearance in print,” wrote an employee of the sugar industry group to one of the authors. The sugar industry’s funding and role were not disclosed when the article was published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The journal did not begin requesting author disclosures until 1984. In an editorial published Monday that accompanied the sugar industry analysis, New York University professor of nutrition Marion Nestle noted that for decades following the study, scientists and health officials focused on reducing saturated fat, not sugar, to prevent heart disease. While scientists are still working to understand links between diet and heart disease, concern has shifted in recent years to sugars, and away from fat, Nestle said. A committee that advised the federal government on dietary guidelines said the available evidence shows “no appreciable relationship” between the dietary cholesterol and heart disease, although it still recommended limiting saturated fats. The American Heart Association cites a study published in 2014 in saying that too much added sugar can increase risk of heart disease, though the authors of that study say the biological reasons for the link are not completely understood. The findings published Monday are part of an ongoing project by a former dentist, Cristin Kearns, to reveal the sugar industry’s decades-long efforts to counter science linking sugar with negative health effects, including diabetes. The lat-
est work, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, is based primarily on 31 pages of correspondence between the sugar group and one of the Harvard researchers who authored the review. In a statement, the Sugar Association said it “should have exercised greater transparency in all of its research activities,” but that funding disclosures were not the norm when the review was published. The group also questioned Kearns’ “continued attempts to reframe historical occurrences” to play into the current public sentiment against sugar. The Sugar Association said it was a “disservice” that industry-funded research in general is considered “tainted.” Companies including Coca-Cola Co. and Kellogg Co. as well as groups for agricultural products like beef and blueberries regularly fund studies that become a part of scientific literature, are cited by other researchers, and are touted in press releases. Companies say they adhere to scientific standards, and many researchers feel that industry funding is critical to advancing science given the growing competition for government funds. But critics say such studies are often thinly veiled marketing that undermine efforts to improve public health. “Food company sponsorship, whether or not intentionally manipulative, undermines public trust in nutrition science,” wrote Nestle, a longtime critic of industry funding of science. The authors of the analysis note they were unable to interview key actors quoted in the documents because they are no longer alive. They also note there is no direct evidence the sugar industry changed the manuscript, that the documents provide a limited window into the sugar industry group’s activities and that the roles of other industries and nutrition leaders in shaping the discussion about heart disease were not studied. Nevertheless, they say the documents underscore why policy makers should consider giving less weight to industry-funded studies. Although funding disclosures are now common practice in the scientific community, the role sponsors play behind the scenes is still not always clear. In June, the Associated Press reported on a study funded by the candy industry’s trade group that found children who eat candy tend to weigh less than those who don’t. The National Confectioners Association, which touted the findings in a press release, provided feedback to the authors on a draft even though a disclosure said it had no role in the paper. The association said its suggestions didn’t alter the findings. In November, the AP also reported on emails showing Coca-Cola was instrumental in creating a non-profit that said its mission was to fight obesity, even though the group publicly said the soda maker had “no input” into its activities. A document circulated at Coke said the group would counter the “shrill rhetoric” ............

ternative to coal.” A spokesperson for Pacific NorthWest LNG called the decision a “significant milestone for Pacific NorthWest LNG and our shareholders.” “Pacific NorthWest LNG would like to thank area First Nations, stakeholders, local residents and all others involved in the regulatory process for their constructive participation in the science-based environmental assessment,” the company’s statement went on. “Moving forward, Pacific NorthWest LNG and our shareholders will conduct a total project review over the coming months prior to announcing next steps for the project.” Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr called the announcement an “exciting day” for Canada, noting “substantial benefits” including “up to 330 direct longterm jobs, 300 local spinoff jobs and 4,500 construction jobs.” Carr said the project will add “nearly $2.4 billion per year to our nation’s GDP” as well as tax revenue that “could help pay for schools and roads and social projects that enrich our lives.” Carr said “natural gas could displace fuels that emit higher levels of GHGs.” However Richard Dixon, a regulatory expert from the University of Alberta, told CTV News Channel earlier that the emissions for the project will be high “given the amount of energy they use to liquefy natural gas,” but on the other hand, it’s a cleaner alternative to coal. He also pointed out that First Nations have mixed views on the proposal. Although most First Nations along the pipeline route have signed on, the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation three times rejected a deal that would have paid them $1.15-billion over 40 years to build the shipping facility on its traditional territory. Dixon also pointed out that although there are a “lot of jobs” involved, they would be mainly during construction. “Once you get these projects up and going, you don’t tend to have as many people,” he said. Earlier Tuesday in the House of Commons, interim Conservative Party leader Rona Ambrose pushed the prime minister to approve resource pipeline projects. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, meanwhile, questioned his commitment to the environment. “The prime minister said, and I quote, ‘the Great Bear Rainforest is no place for a crude oil pipeline’,” Mulcair said during daily question period. “British Columbians give that a big high five.” “What he seems unwilling to do is say whether he thinks the Great Bear Rainforest is a place for a natural gas pipeline,” Mulcair added. Prime Minister Trudeau vowed to protect the environment and create prosperity. “It’s no longer a question of making a choice on one side or the other,” the prime minister said. “And that’s why we’re moving forward in a responsible to analyzing various projects and we’re going to make decisions in the interest of all Canadians.” A recent survey of more than 3,500 people conducted by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada found that 56 per cent of Canadians agree that “Canada should sell natural gas to Asia” while 28 per cent disagree and 15 per cent don’t know. The Liberal government has approved the $36-billion Pacific NorthWest LNG project in northern British Columbia, which would process liquefied gas in a facility near the port of Prince Rupert for export to markets in Asia. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna said at the announcement in Richmond, B.C., that the project was subject to “a rigorous environmental assessment” that included “interim guidelines” announced in January. “The only way to get resources to market in the twenty-first century is if it can be done sustainably and responsibly,” she said. McKenna said there are 190 legally-binding conditions for the project, which are “based on the best available science and on indigenous traditional knowledge.” The conditions include “for the first time ever, a maximum cap on greenhouse gas emissions.” “Indigenous communities near the project will participate with Canada and the province in environmental monitoring, a new innovative approach and consistent with the government’s reconciliation agenda,” McKenna went on. McKenna added that federal scientists have determined “there will not be a significant impact on the salmon” -- a concern raised by some First Nations people. “Indigenous peoples were meaningfully consulted and, where appropriate, impacts on their rights and interests were accommodated,” according to McKenna. B.C. Premier Christy Clark has championed the 900-kilomtre pipeline and export terminal project led by Malaysia’s state-owned firm Petronas. Clark thanked the federal cabinet for approving a project that she said will benefit “all Canadians” by creating thousands of jobs “for families, for working people and, importantly, for First Nations people.” Clark acknowledged concerns about the projects’ carbon emissions, but said that the province is proposing to reduce emissions by using electricity in extraction. “British Columbia is proud to be the climate leader in North America,” she said. “We have the first, the highest and the most comprehensive carbon tax on pollution on the continent and we are very encouraged to have a federal partner.” Clark also acknowledged that the project might not go ahead, if natural gas prices remain low. “I don’t know when the market will improve enough for these projects to go ahead,” she said. However, according to Clark, countries like China, Japan and India “are really hungry for a clean alVancouver’s housing-bubble risk

FAITH Sahih Bukhari Volume 003, Book 031, Hadith Number 204. Narated By Mutarrif from ‘Imran Ibn Husain : That the Prophet asked him (Imran) or asked a man and Imran was listening, “O Abu so-and-so! Have you fasted the last days of this month?” (The narrator thought that he said, “the month of Ramadan”). The man replied, “No, O Allah’s Apostle!” The Prophet said to him, “When you finish your fasting (of Ramadan) fast two days (in Shawwal).” Through another series of narrators ‘Imran said, “The Prophet said, ‘(Have you fasted) the last days of Sha’ban?”
Use of the Lunar Calendar
Muharrum 1, 1438H from Oct 2
T
he Islamic Calendar is based on the Lunar Calendar consisting of 354-355 days annually and is 10-11 days shorter than the western Solar Calendar. The Lunar month is based on the time it takes the moon to complete a single orbit around the earth and it is just over 29? days. There are many advantages to the Lunar calendar. For example, the various dates in the Islamic Calendar such as Ramadan and Hajj rotate every year and are not fixed like the Solar Year. People, therefore, will perform acts of worship in various climatic conditions and in different length of hours in submission to the will of Allah where human imagination plays no part. The new moon marks the beginning of each new lunar month and it is easy for people to see the new moon and know that a new month has begun. This probably explains why most ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians, the Jews, the Greeks and the Egyptians in the Middle East , the Aztecs and the Incas of the West, and the Hindus and the Chinese of the East used this system. Interestingly, the English word ‘month’ is derived from the word ‘moon’.
Origin and Significance of the Hijri Calendar The Islamic Calendar was started by the second Caliph Umar (RA) in 16 AH/ 637 CE [Al-Tabari: Tarikh Al- Rusul 5/22 & Ibn Sa‘d: Tabaqat Al- Kubra 3/281]. The event of the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, was chosen to begin the Islamic Calendar because it was the first major sacrifice made by the whole Ummah for the preservation of Islam in its formative period. Ibn Hajar, in his Fath AlBari, records that the Caliph Umar (RA) is
reported to have remarked: “The Hijrah has separated truth from falsehood, therefore, let it become the Epoch of the Era”. The Hijrah year reminds Muslims every year of the sacrifices made by the first Muslims and should prepare them to do the same. The constant use of the Hijri Calendar for acts of worship and as a frame of reference to major historical events will help Muslims keep links with their roots and further enhance their knowledge of their religion and history.
Months of the Islamic Calendar There are twelve months in the Islamic Calendar as the Qur’an says: “Surely the number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve, in accordance with His decree from the day He created the heavens and the earth, out of which four are sacred” (9:36). These twelve months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi‘ al-Awwal, Rabi‘ alThani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Ukhra, Rajab, Sha‘ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa‘dah and Dhul Hijjah. The four Sacred Months (al-Ashhur al-Hurum) are Rajab, Dhul Qa‘dah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram [Bukhari]. The sanctity of these months was also accepted in the Pre-Islamic era when fighting was forbidden.

Welcome Back to all
tual visibility of the moon as the Prophet (SAW) said: “Fast by seeing it (the moon) and end the fast by seeing it” [Bukhari & Muslim]. Muslim scholars have interpreted this Prophetic saying in two different ways. Some scholars, such as Al- Shafi’i, have held the view that each location has its own sighting of the moon (Ikhtilaf alMutali‘) [Sayyid Sabiq: Fiqhus Sunnah 3/112]. But most scholars from the other Schools of Law have taken the words “fast by seeing it” (sumu li ru’yatihi) as a general command to all Muslims and not individual sectors of the community. Hence they regard the sighting of the moon in one region as valid for people of another region, provided the news of sighting the moon reaches them through authentic means [Ibn Taymiyyah: Majmu‘ah Fatawa 5/111].
Muharram\ This is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and one of the four Sacred Months (al-Ashhur al- Hurum). It is recommended to fast during this month as there is a Hadith which says: “The best fast, after Ramadan, is in the month of Muharram” [Muslim]. This may be an indirect reference to ‘Ashura and not to Muharram in general because, according to Sayyidah Aisha R.A, the Prophet (SAW) fasted most in Sha‘ban
after Ramadan [Bukhari & Muslim]. Significance of the Hijrah for Muslims Muharram heralds the beginning of the Islamic Calendar. The Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his Companions (Sahabah) from Makkah to Madinah was much more than a simple migration. It was a turning point in the history of Islam. It was a revolution and complete transformation of society. The Muhajirun (emigrants) of Makkah gave up their family, property and homeland for the sake of religion and the Ansar (helpers) of Madinah welcomed them with great hospitality. Thus a unique brotherhood (mu’akhah) was created between them, hitherto unknown in human history. By highlighting the Hijrah, Muslims will re-affirm their need to be in a state where they can practice their religion and make the necessary sacrifices to achieve that aim, including emigration. Hijrah also has a deep spiritual significance where Muslims commit themselves to leave the state of disbelief (kufr) and sin to enter that of Islam and piety. That is why the Prophet (SAW) said: “The best emigrant (Muhajir) is the one who leaves what Allah has forbidden” [Bukhari] Although the practical usage of the Islamic Calendar is increasingly diminishing, nevertheless the foundation of many acts of worship such as Zakah, Sawm and Hajj revolve around this calendar and it is one of the hallmarks (shi‘ar) of Islam that differentiates Muslims from other communities. Undoubtedly, there is a great need for Muslims to reaffirm their cultural heritage by using the Islamic Calendar on a regular basis and not just during Ramadan and Eid.

Modi’s new battle lines!
B Z By: Zahid hid H Hussain i THE Indian prime minister has laid bare his strategy of what some analysts describe as a ‘vertical and horizontal escalation’. He apparently seeks to encircle and bleed Pakistan dry by intensifying cross-border covert operations while keeping the option of military strikes open. He vows to internationally isolate Pakistan and wants to cripple it economically. He even threatens to use water as a weapon in the conflict. He feels that by deepening India’s strategic collaboration with Afghanistan and other regional countries, he could have Islamabad on its knees. It is potentially a costly gamble by the Indian leader who is known for his huge appetite for risk. Such reckless action could easily spiral out of control and turn into a full-blown military confrontation. The underlying calculation of Modi’s escalation is that India can afford this brinkmanship given the country’s growing global influence. But it is hard to believe that the international community has the same appetite for conflagration in one of the world’s most combustible regions. It is true that the world has sympathised with New Delhi over the Uri attack, the most deadly one in the disputed territory of India-held Kashmir in the past two decades. And it has largely remained silent on the Indian state’s atrocities in the area. This stance of Western powers, in the words of writer Pankaj Mishra, stems from the “fantasies of Western strategists” to use India as a counterweight to China. Yet the gross human rights violations and brutal use of force to suppress the popular uprising in India-held Kashmir has not completely escaped the attention of international
rights groups. The Indian government has drawn strong criticism for not allowing a UN observer team to visit the troubled territory. It could also be the reason that the Uri attack was unable to get the same kind of traction as other terrorist actions in India in the past. What the Indian government refuses to accept is that it is an internal rather than an external problem in Kashmir — and one that it needs to deal with. Though a covert war between India and Pakistan has been going on for the past several decades, New Delhi’s active support for the secessionist movement in Balochistan could trigger a new round of sub-conventional warfare in the region with disastrous consequences for both countries. The Indian move will only encourage the hardliners in the Pakistani security establishment to toughen their stance providing justification to bolster support to the jihadists. That would have disastrous consequences for regional peace and security. Pakistan has already paid a heavy price for using militancy as a tool for proxy wars in the region. Indian involvement will have a negative effect on Pakistan’s ongoing campaign against militancy and violent extremism. India’s move to use its strategic relations with the government in Kabul to increase pressure and encircle Pakistan is most worrying. Islamabad has long accused India of using Afghan territory for carrying out subversive activities inside Pakistan. And Modi’s statements reinforce Islamabad’s
worst nightmare. But using Afghanistan against Pakistan should be of concern to the US and other Western coalition partners. Such actions could further destabilise Afghanistan and turn it into a battlefield for India and Pakistan’s proxy war, making it more difficult to find a political solution to the Afghan crisis. The indication by India that it could unilaterally revoke the Indus Waters Treaty, which has survived three wars and decades of confrontation between the two countries, is ominous. This is the first time that any Indian leader has showed signs of wanting to renege on an agreement that is supposed to be untouchable. The treaty was signed between the two countries under the auspices of the World Bank that resolved the water dispute between the two countries. Though it will not be easy to annul an international treaty unilaterally, Modi’s moves to make the agreement controversial are dangerous with serious long-term consequences. India has already suspended a regular water commission meeting until what it describes as “Pakistani-sponsored terrorism in India” ends. That in itself is a provocation. Even a minor violation of the treaty could push the two countries towards a military conflict. One wonders why the Modi government has raised the issue at all. Even more embarrassing for the prime minister would be how to climb down from his extreme position that may isolate his government. Unsurprisingly, many Indians are opposed to
M Modi’s belligerent policy against Pakistan. A According to a PEW survey published rec cently, nearly half of respondents across the b border do not approve of Modi’s policies conc cerning Islamabad despite the fact that public s sentiments against Pakistan have risen. It is apparent that Modi has grossly miscalculated that he can manage the diplomatic fallout of an escalation because India is now much better placed in the world today. Surely, as one of fastest-growing economies India’s standing has significantly improved in the world. But there is the huge question of whether that would help it maintain its position in the event of a confrontation with Pakistan. Meanwhile, Modi has vowed to intensify efforts to make Pakistan a pariah state in the eyes of the international community and diplomatically isolate Islamabad over its alleged export of terrorism. Undoubtedly, our own flawed policies and inability to take out all shades of terrorist and militant groups operating from our territories has provoked widespread international scepticism. Yet Modi’s stance is taking it too far to make Pakistan a pariah state. Undoubtedly Pakistan has suffered from lack of coherent foreign and security policies mainly due to multiple power centres causing it huge diplomatic setbacks in the past few years. But it remains a very important country for the world given its critical geostrategic position. Any effort to destabilise Pakistan through covert and overt operations will have serious consequences not only for the region but also for India itself. Modi has thrown the gauntlet and now it is for Pakistan to put its house in order to confront the challenge. The writer is an author and journalist. Source: in Dawn September
of this act as it prevents the state government of Kashmir from prosecuting soldiers accused of human rights abuse. During recent months, more than 80 demonstrators have been killed by the Indian forces for protesting against the death of a Kashmiri militant Burhan Wani in a staged shootout by the Indian Army. “it’s a shame that the Indian state continues to kill people of Kashmir like dogs, while at the same time making state-
ments that Kashmir is an integral part of India,” Singh said while addressing the crowd. He reminded the gathering of the infamous Kunan Posphpora incident of 1991 in which scores of Kashmiri women were raped by the Indian soldiers during a crackdown on two villages. After his speech he invited Mr. Mohammad Naseer Pirzada of the Miracle Media to say about both issues. Mr. Pirzada first commended Mr. Singh for raising both issues at this protest – first issue is the imprisonment of Ms. Iroma Sharmila, a political activist who is in Indian’s prison since 16 years. In Indian subcontinent unfortunately law forces treatment with the criminals and political activists are almost same. Those forces should treat them as per theirs crime/ fault as per laws. The Second important current issue is that of Kashmir. This is a 68 years old issue which has become even more serious after 2009-2010 riots. Since July 9, 2016 the situation in Kashmir is worsening almost by the day. More than 104 people have been killed and thousands are
wounded including innocent women and children till the day. Why doesn’t Indian Government give Kashmir’s people their rights for what the people of Kashmir want, how they want to survive and with whom they want to live. There is no result of UN 1948 resolution till they day. Millions of people killed and millions were wounded from that day at this issue. At this platform we strongly protest the Indian Government. Please stop this brutal killing of innocent women and children and solve this matter in a diplomatic and peaceful way. In Kashmir 80 % Kashmir’s young generation are jobless and many other social, religious and economic problems need to be resolved. It is strange that this matter of brutal killings is not highlighted in any mainstream media and not yet discussed in G 8-20 and other countries. Other speakers included Mr. Malhi who spoke on many Indian issues. Mr. Imtiaz Popat of ACCESS Community Television also spoke about Kashmir’s issues and urged Indian government to solve them in a diplomatic way.
Miracle joins Radical Desi’s Protest against the brutal killings of Kashmiris
On Sep 17, Mr. Gurpreet Singh of Radical Desi organized a rally to protest against the repression of people in Kashmir and the ongoing state violence in India.Mr. Singh, said that the AFSPA is being widely used by the Indian Army in Kashmir to suppress the indigenous struggle for right to self determination. He pointed out that the Indian forces continue to kill political activists and indulge in sexual violence with impunity because

Killer disease claims 1200 lives annually
By:Repeka Nasiko MORE than 1200 people die from cancer every year in Fiji, says Fiji Cancer Society acting president Phillip Low.While addressing supporters of Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea event organised by Motibhai Group of Companies in Nadi yesterday, he said cancer was the third leading cause of death in the country.“Cancer is responsible for 10 per cent of deaths in Fiji with well over 1200 cases recorded annually,” he said. “The unfortunate part about that is that this number is growing. The statistics on this will be released shortly.“Cancer is the third leading cause of death in Fiji behind cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. This figure is on the rise due to the lack of early detection, lack of awareness and education.” He said cancer patients were also faced with both emotional and financial challenges when undergoing treatment. “The important part that everyone should know is that in Fiji there are only two centres that conduct chemotherapy, which is the Lautoka Hospital and the CWM Hospital. “There are quite a large number of cancer patients living between the corridor of Lautoka and Nausori.“However, a lot of patients turn up for their first session of chemotherapy and in our culture and society, the cancer stigma is still very much an issue.
“Because of the shame that people feel from this treatment, a lot of people fail to come back for their second or third treatment.” He said the Fiji Cancer Society had been working hard to ensure patients got their vital medical care. “So what we do is reach out to local taxis and get them to pick up these patients right from their homes and take them to the hospital. “A few things that we saw were shame or Fijian madua and also economic challenges meaning they don’t have the financial means to get to hospital. This is what we have been doing to fund these patients.” The Fiji Cancer Society, along with the Ministry of Health, will be releasing new figures on the debilitating disease tomorrow during the official launch of Pinktober.Source:

Barack Obama suffered a unique political blow on Wednesday, when the US Congress overturned his veto of a bill that would allow families of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks to sue Saudi Arabia. The overwhelming bipartisan vote in both the Senate and House inflicted the first veto override of Obama’s presidency, less than four months before he leaves office. The White House issued an unusually scathing response. “I would venture to say that this is the single most embarrassing thing that the United States Senate has done, possibly, since 1983,” press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters. “Ultimately these senators are going to have to answer their own conscience and their constituents as they account for their actions today. Obama expressed disappointment. “The concern that I’ve had has nothing to do with Saudi Arabia per se or my sympathy for 9/11 families, it has to do with me not wanting a situation in which we’re suddenly exposed to liabilities for all the work that we’re doing all around the world, and suddenly finding ourselves subject to the private lawsuits in courts where we don’t even know exactly whether they’re on the up and up, in some cases,” he told CNN. “So this is a dangerous precedent and it’s an example of why sometimes you have to do what’s hard. And, frankly, I wish Congress here had done what’s hard. I didn’t expect
it, because if you’re perceived as voting against 9/11 families right before an election, not surprisingly, that’s a hard vote for people to take. But it would have been the right thing to do.” The legislation will permit courts to waive a claim of foreign sovereign immunity when an act of terrorism occurs inside US borders, according to the terms of the bill. Saudi Arabia has objected strongly to the legislation and has categorically denied any role in the 9/11 attacks. Fifteen of the 19 plane hijackers were Saudi nationals.” Source:www.aljazeera.com
4 foreigners, Saudi held for terrorism
JEDDAH: Police arrested five people — four foreigners and one Saudi — for links with terrorist groups and recent terror operations in the Kingdom. The five, arrested this week, are two Syrians, one residing in the Kingdom, one Indian and one Pakistani residing in the country, and a Saudi. The five are currently detained in public security prisons and undergoing investigations, security sources said. Since August 2009, 19 Indians have been arrested. The first to be arrested was accused of ties with terrorists and is now serving a prison term. The rest of the Indians detained are currently being investigated. Premiers send Trudeau letter demanding meeting on health care with Trudeau in July, but have so far failed to secure a commitment from the prime minister. The premiers are unhappy with a planned decrease in the annual increase attached to the Canada Health Transfer (CHT), the mechanism through which the federal government provides provincial and territorial governments with funding for health care. Previously set at six per cent by Paul Martin’s Liberal government, the rate was scheduled by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government to decrease to a minimum of three per cent next year. “If a meeting on long-term health-care financing is not possible within the proposed timeframe, we ask that you formally commit to postponing the entry into force of
the proposed CHT changes for at least one year,” Pasloski writes. “This will give us the opportunity to reach an agreement that reflects intergovernmental collaboration and is respectful of [provincial and territorial] jurisdiction, which we believe will be to the benefit of all Canadians the Canadian federation.”

In lieu of meeting, provincial leaders say federal government should extend increased health transfers By Aaron Wherry, Susan Lunn, CBC News Provincial and territorial premiers have written to Justin Trudeau to seek a firm commitment from the prime minister for a meeting on health-care funding before the first ministers’ meet to discuss climate change this fall. In the letter obtained by CBC News, the premiers say if a meeting on health care is not possible by mid-December, they want the prime minister to commit to extending increased health-care transfers for at least another year. Trudeau and the premiers are due to meet this fall to finalize plans for reducing Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. In his letter, Pasloski says premiers would also like to hold a meeting “solely dedicated to long-term health-care financing before mid-December.” The premiers publicly asked for a meeting

Clark’s LNG promises still empty, despite federal approval, says NDP VICTORIA – The federal environmental approval for Pacific Northwest LNG on Tuesday was little more than a reminder of Christy Clark’s failure to deliver even a single LNG plant, despite making it the key plank in the 2013 election campaign, say B.C. New Democrats. “Christy Clark promised British Columbians an LNG windfall during the last election. She promised to have one plant up and running a year ago, and five by the end of the decade. She promised 100,000 new jobs and to deposit $100 billion in a prosperity fund. None of that has come true,” said New Democrat Leader John Horgan. “The premier keeps making promises she has no intention of keeping. She says LNG in B.C. will be the world’s cleanest, but the Petronas project she is promoting isn’t even the cleanest proposal in B.C. We could be doing much more to limit emissions from this project, but Premier Clark has refused to ensure high standards. Instead of mandating an emissions cap like the federal govern-
ment, Clark has offered endless loopholes to proponents and actually signed an agreement that promises financial compensation to the company if any future provincial government tightens environmental regulations,” said Horgan. “The premier is content to wait for world markets to support her plans for LNG development. But we need real, lasting sustainable jobs by investing in alternative energy, transit, infrastructure and high tech, and we need those jobs now. “There’s another election campaign around the corner now, and the one thing Christy Clark called her ‘central preoccupation’ has not been achieved,” said Horgan. ”Why would British Columbians believe any of her promises?” The federal government announced Tuesday that it was granting an environmental approval certificate to the Pacific Northwest LNG facility proposed by Malaysian-owned energy company Petronas. The approval came with 190 conditions.
“Getting the federal government’s go-ahead is certainly an important step for any project. But it’s just one step. The only way an LNG plant is going to be built in B.C. is if a company makes a final investment decision to actually go ahead with one. In these market conditions, it’s hard to believe that will come any time in the next several years, never mind on Christy Clark’s political timetable before the next election,” said Bruce Ralston, New Democrat spokesperson for natural gas development and trade. Ralston pointed out that New Democrats have long supported the development of an LNG industry in B.C., but have always insisted that any development must include express guarantees of jobs and training opportunities for British Columbians, get a fair return for our resources, benefit and include First Nations in a meaningful way; and protect our air, land and water, including living up to B.C.’s climate change commitments. “Premier Clark’s agreements with Petronas have fallen short on almost every count. She
agreed to practically give away our resource to Petronas, we know that the project will employ up to 70 per cent temporary foreign workers in some phases, and there remain some very serious concerns with First Nations communities,” said Ralston. “We will be looking at the conditions set by the federal government in their approval very closely to understand whether they meet the test on the environmental conditions,” said Ralston.
MLA Bains gets nod to seek 4th term for NDP in Surrey-Newton
MLA Harry Bains was acclaimed as the BC NDP candidate for Surrey-Newton at a nomination meeting today, clearing the way for his fourth successful run for office. Bains was elected to represent the constituency in 2005, 2009 and 2013.A former elected member of the Steelworkers Union and former vice-chair of the Kwantlen University College Board of Governors, Bain is well-aware of the serious issues facing his community. “The Christy Clark BC Liberals have failed Surrey-Newton. The level of violence, and threats of violence, are frightening people,” Bains said. “Our schools are filled to bursting, with more than 7,000 children in portables, and we are far, far behind where we need to be on transit.” “The people of Surrey-Newton could not ask for a more dedicated MLA than Harry Bains,” said BC NDP Leader John Horgan. “He knows the community, he has a track record of standing up for people who need help, and he works tirelessly to make a difference.”

How Canada could benefi t from a Donald Trump presidency — especially on immigration been associated with a variety of moves
By:Luke Kawa, Bloomberg News President Donald J. Trump? That’s the question on everyone’s mind ahead of the first presidential debate between the real estate mogul and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on Monday night. It’s also the title of a note by RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Canadian Equity Strategist Matthew Barasch, in which he offers a rundown of how a Trump presidency would impact America’s neighbour to the north. As the former Secretary of State’s lead in the polls has narrowed in the run-up to this faceoff, Wall Street strategists have been warning that investors need to take the possibility of a Trump presidency more seriously. These recent fluctuations in the polls have
across global markets, including the Mexican peso, longer-dated U.S. Treasuries, and even the Canadian dollar. In a recent note to clients, Société Générale FX Strategist Olivier Korber warned that “Canada’s status as a privileged trade partner should be increasingly discounted by FX markets.” But in something of a contrast to analysts who have warned that a U.S. exit from the North American Free Trade Agreement would imperil Canadian prosperity, Barasch believes “the sum total of Mr. Trump’s policy proposals would be positive for Canada and Canadian stocks, at least for a time.” On immigration in particular, the strategist
sees Canada’s advantageous position relative to the U.S. growing even more if Trump is elected, citing his plan to deport illegal immigrants and build a wall along the Mexican border. Canadian policymakers have often bemoaned the country’s “brain drain” — the propensity for high-performing individuals in professional services industries to be lured to the U.S. by the promise of higher pay. In the event that Trump prevails in November, Barasch sees Canada benefiting from a brain gain instead. The loser in this scenario according to the strategist would, however, be humanity. “Under Mr. Trump’s plan, the immigration divide between Canada and the U.S. figures
Globally, investors have been piling into investments like gold, U.S. equities and emerging market debt, but recent positioning in Canadian stocks and bonds is less crowded. Kurt Reiman explains why. Compared to the wild market gyrations witnessed last summer when China devalued its currency, this August has been rather placid. Although the economic data hasn’t been terribly robust in recent weeks, it hasn’t been disastrous either. Meanwhile, the big financial news story of recent weeks has been whether the U.S. Federal Reserve will raise
rates again during 2016, which just goes to show how starved the media has been for real headlines. With little to jolt investors into making meaningful shifts in portfolio positioning, volatility has remained muted and market participants are showing a tendency to gather around some of the same trades. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. As we wrote in our Global Weekly Commentary, some popular overweight positions still look attractive to us, such as our preference for investment-grade credit and emerging market debt within fixed income, as well as our interest in gold as a portfolio diversifier.
One out-of-favour area we still like is emerging market equities, which show up as a modest underweight on our dashboard despite the recent enthusiasm. What do we see when we fix the lens on Canada? Earlier this summer just before the Brexit vote, Canadian fixed income had become a popular overweight while Canadian equities had been something of a modest underweight (see the chart below) among
time to prepare for changes when flying to or transiting through Canada, the government is extending the leniency period for the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) requirement until November 9, 2016. Since then, positioning in Canadian assets has become much more balanced, implying less crowdedness on the part of investors. The shift away from an underweight to a more balanced assessment of Canadian stocks likely reflects how strong year-to-date gains and investor enthusiasm for precious metals have attracted inflows. That said, modestly high valuations and tepid Canadian economic activity have likely constrained enthusiasm. Meanwhile, the less aggressive overweight to Canadian fixed income is likely a result of the post-Brexit decline in interest rates and likely better opportunities in other corners of the bond market.

It is best for travellers to apply for an eTA before booking a flight to Canada. As it can take time to get a Canadian passport, travellers should apply for one as soon as they can and plan travel accordingly.

TECHNOLOGY
How social media is changing language
From unfriend to selfie, social media is clearly having an impact on language. As someone who writes about social media I’m aware of not only how fast these online platforms change, but also of how they influence the language in which I write. The words that surround us every day influence the words we use. Since so much of the written language we see is now on the screens of our computers, tablets, and smartphones, language now evolves partly through our interaction with technology. And because the language we use to communicate with each other tends to be more malleable than formal writing, the combination of informal, personal communication and the mass audience afforded by social media is a recipe for rapid change. From the introduction of new words to new meanings for old words to changes in the way we communicate, social media is making its presence felt.
New ways of communicating An alphabet soup of acronyms, abbreviations, and neologisms has grown up around technologically mediated communication to help us be understood. I’m old enough to have learned the acronyms we now think of as textspeak on the online forums and ‘internet relay chat’ (IRC) that pre-dated text messaging. On IRC, acronyms help speed up a real-time typed conversation. On mo-
bile phones they minimize the inconvenience of typing with tiny keys. And on Twitter they help you make the most of your 140 characters. Emoticons such as ;-) and acronyms such as LOL (‘laughing out loud’ – which has just celebrated its 25th birthday) add useful elements of non-verbal communication – or annoy people with their overuse. This extends to playful asterisk-enclosed stage directions describing supposed physical actions or facial expressions (though use with caution: it turns out that *innocent face* is no defence in court). An important element of Twitter syntax is the hashtag – a clickable keyword used to categorize tweets. Hashtags have also spread to other social media platforms – and they’ve even reached everyday speech, but hopefully spoofs such as Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake’s sketch on The Tonight Show will dissuade us from using them too frequently. But you will find hashtags all over popular culture, from greetings cards and t-shirts to the dialogue of sitcom characters. Syntax aside, social media has also prompted a more subtle revolution in the way we communicate. We share more personal information, but also communicate with larger audiences. Our communication styles consequently become more informal and more open, and this seeps into other areas of life and culture. When writing on social
media, we are also more succinct, get to the point quicker, operate within the creative constraints of 140 characters on Twitter, or aspire to brevity with blogs. New words and meanings Facebook has also done more than most platforms to offer up new meanings for common words such as friend, like, status, wall, page, and profile. Other new meanings which crop up on social media channels also reflect the dark side of social media: a troll is no longer just a character from Norse folklore, but someone who makes offensive or provocative comments online; a sock puppet is no longer solely a puppet made from an old sock, but a self-serving fake online persona; and astroturfing is no longer simply laying a plastic lawn but also a fake online grass-roots movement. Social media is making it easier than ever to contribute to the evolution of language. You no longer have to be published through traditional avenues to bring word trends to the attention of the masses. While journalists have long provided the earliest known uses of topical terms – everything from 1794’s pew-rent in The Times to beatboxing in The Guardian (1987) – the net has been widened by the ‘net’. A case in point is Oxford Dictionaries 2013 Word of the Year, selfie: the earliest use of the word has been traced to an Australian internet forum. With forums, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media
PLEASE Now a days it is very common to discusses personal and
channels offering instant interaction with wide audiences, it’s never been easier to help a word gain traction from your armchair.
Keeping current Some people may feel left behind by all this. If you’re a lawyer grappling with the new geek speak, you may need to use up court time to have terms such as Rickrolling explained to you. And yes, some of us despair at how use of this informal medium can lead to an equally casual attitude to grammar. But the truth is that social media is great for word nerds. It provides a rich playground for experimenting with, developing, and subverting language. It can also be a great way keep up with these changes. Pay attention to discussions in your social networks and you can spot emerging new words, new uses of words – and maybe even coin one yourself.

25Th Annual Ismaili Walk Raises Over $320,000 To Improve Mental Health Care In The Community
VANCOUVER, BC – On Sunday, September 18th, the 25th annual Ismaili Walk took place at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. Participants celebrated this milestone event in some great weather weather, alive with the spirit of service and caring for the community. British Columbians from across Vancouver attended the Walk, raising over $320,000. Over the past 2 years, the Ismaili Walk has raised over $550,000 to improve mental health care in our communities. The walk was started by the Ismaili Muslim Community in British Columbia in 1992 as an initiative to help improve the quality of life in our local communities. This year, the Walk partnered with VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division, to raise awareness and funds in support of the Joseph and Rosalie Segal Mental Family Health Centre and the Living Life to the full for Youth programme. “We are so grateful to Vancouver’s Ismaili community for this generous and inspiring support,” says Barbara
Grantham, Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer. “This Walk helps us to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and support family members and friends who struggle. The new Segal Centre, to open in August of 2017, will be one of the world’s finest mental health facilities and a source of hope for many. The Ismaili Walk has played a role in making this Centre a reality.” “Mental Illness is something that impacts everyone in our community, and we are delighted to further the work of our partners to improve the quality of mental health care in our Province.” said Samir Manji, President, Ismaili Council for British Columbia. “By raising awareness and supporting critical facilities and programs, we are able to improve the quality of life of those individuals and families who are impacted by mental health challenges.” The 25th Annual Ismaili Walk featured a full day of live entertainment, delicious meals, and activities for the entire family. Since its’ inception in 1992, the Ismaili Walk has become one of
the city’s favourite family events, and thanks to the support and commitment of its partners, donors, and many thousands of volunteers, has raised over $4.8 million to support local initiatives. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. Each year in Canada, October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Canadian females, affecting thousands of women and their families each year. In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it. One in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer - with the risk increasing significantly after the age of 50. One in 28 will die from the disease. Although, since the mid-1990s, the incidence of cancer and death has declined, it continues to be a lifethreatening issue for thousands of Canadian women. The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) continues to encourage its 340,000 members to take an active part in the fight to end this disease. An estimated 170 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die of it. Breast cancer death rates have declined by 25% since 1986. Incidence and death rates for breast cancer have declined since 1969 in women aged 20-39. Survival has been improving gradually. Today survival ranges between 87% and 89% for women aged 40 and older. For women under 40, survival is 81%, excluding Quebec. What you can do Many women are alive and well today because their breast cancer was detected and treated early. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that women: • Have a mammogram every 2 years if you are between the ages of 50 and 69. If you are between the ages of 40 and 49, discuss your risk of breast cancer and the benefits and risks of mammography with your doctor; • Have a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional at least every two years if you are between 40-69; • If you are 70 or older, talk to your doctor about a screening program for you; • Talk to your doctors about any changes. There is no single cause of breast cancer but there are certain factors that may appear to elevate the risk. These include: • Age – Risk of diagnosis increases as a person ages • Personal history – If a person has previously battled the disease • Family history – Especially if a mother, sister or daughter has encountered breast cancer • Family history of ovarian cancer • Taking hormone replacement therapy for more than five years• Dense breast tissue • Other possible risk factors – Poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and obesity Sometimes, women develop breast cancer without any of these risk factors. A lot of women affected by breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease. Even more surprising, some women have risk factors and never encounter the disease. Unfortunately, because of this uncertainty, early detection means a lot. Health professionals recommend that you see them if you find any changes with your breasts such as: • Size and shape • If you find a lump on your breast or a lump in your armpit area • Skin changes on your breast (such as peeling)
h i l changes h d iin the h appear• Physical you find ance of the nipple Here are 9 ways to change your life: 1. Eat Fruit You can’t go wrong with this – almost all dietary advice comes down to the single instruction to eat more fruit and veg. Diet is thought to be a key factor in one in four cancer deaths – and animal fat in the diet is the suspect ingredient in breast cancer. The Japanese, who eat a diet of fish, rice and vegetables that is extremely low in animal fat, also have low rates of breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the blood, which encourages the growth of cancer cells. In populations with a high-fat diet, women tend to start their periods earlier and reach menopause later so they are exposed to high levels of oestrogen for longer, increasing their risk of breast cancer. Studies into what effect eating fruit and vegetables has on breast cancer have produced mixed results. One study found that, when combined with taking exercise, the results were dramatic. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology last June, it showed that women who ate their five portions a day and walked briskly for at least 30 minutes halved their risk of breast cancer. 2. Walk It is enjoyable, simple and requires no equipment. Walking is good for all aspects of physical and mental health – and cancer is no exception. Brisk walking (or other exercise) for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, is all that’s needed. Currently only one in four women manages this. If all women did, Cancer Research UK estimates it would prevent 1,400 cases a year. Three large studies in Italy and the US showed that inactivity caused 11 per cent of cases of breast cancer. Exercise works best before the menopause, but it is effective afterwards, too. It is thought to alter oestrogen metabolism, resulting in a weaker version being made. 3. Avoid HRT Hormone replacement therapy is seen as the principal avoidable risk for breast cancer. At the height of its popularity, in 2002, an estimated two million women were taking HRT in the UK, and millions more worldwide. Tens of thousands of women will have developed breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (of the lining of the womb) as a result. Overall, women currently taking HRT are 63 per cent more likely to
develop these three cancers than those who are not. Earlier hopes that these risks would be counterbalanced by a reduction in heart disease have not been borne out. Gynecologists recommend that women who wish to use it to ease the symptoms of the menopause do so for as short a time as possible. 4. Get screened Women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest possible stage have a nine in 10 chance of a successful recovery. This is the rationale for screening – to detect a tumour by mammography when it is still too small to feel. Women aged 50 to 70 are invited for screening every three years – shortly to be extended to ages 47 to 73. It is estimated that the scheme saves 1,400 lives a years in England – one life for every 500 women screened. However, there is a downside in the shape of false alarms. Screening picks up abnormalities in the breast that look like cancer but turn out not to be. Several thousand women each year suffer the anxiety and discomfort of being recalled for further tests and undergoing biopsies of the breast to check for cancer – before being given the all-clear. Screening is now more accurate, since two views of the breast are taken, reducing the chances of cancers being missed. 4. Give birth Having children, especially before the age of 30, helps protect against breast cancer. It is down to those hormones, again. Over the last century, economic progress has led to delayed childbirth and smaller families as women with their own careers have sought to balance the demands of work and home. But researchers estimate that delaying childbearing increases the risk of breast cancer by 3 per cent for each year of delay. 5. Breast-feed Breast-feeding protects against breast cancer, as well as being best for the baby. But smaller families and the rise in the number of working mothers has meant the time spent breast-feeding has reduced. Breastfeeding for six months reduces the risk, experts say. Yet many women never get that far. In England, 77 per cent of mothers start breast-feeding but more than a third switch to bottle-feeding in the first six weeks. 6. Lose weight Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer – but only after the menopause. A large European study called Epic found postmenopausal women who were obese had a 31 per cent higher risk of breast cancer than women with a healthy weight. Reducing obesity could save 1,800 cases of breast cancer a year. Obesity increases the risk of other cancers including those of the bowel, womb, kidney and oesophagus. Overall it is estimated that 7. per cent of cancers in women and 3 per cent in men are due to being obese or overweight. In the UK, 12,000 people might avoid getting cancer each year if they maintained a healthy body weight. 7. Get a stressful job (really) A 2005 Danish study published in the British Medical Journal found high levels of daily stress reduced the risk of the disease by 40 per cent. The researchers suggest that stress may be beneficial by reducing levels of oestrogen. They draw a distinction between daily stress of the sort experienced by women in high-pressure jobs and stressful
life events such as bereavement, which have previously been linked with an increase in cancer. Stress can have other damaging effects, too – on the heart, for example, and by increasing the risk of compensatory behaviour. 8. Live somewhere clean It has long been claimed that exposure to pollutants used in the manufacture of products from plastics to cosmetics has an “endocrine disrupting” effect. A report from the World Wide Fund for Nature last year claimed their role in breast cancer had been neglected. It pointed out that less than half of new breast cancer cases can be explained by genetic and lifestyle factors and chemicals in the environment could be the missing link. Other studies have contradicted this suggestion and experts point out that compared with the natural levels of oestrogen in a woman’s blood, the level of the chemicals is too small to have significant impact. Still, moving to an unpolluted region is unlikely to do harm and could encourage tother beneficial changes, such as eating healthily, exercising more, and drinking less. Don’t be nervous or anxious about finding changes in your breasts. Often these changes may not be related to cancer – but it’s worthwhile to tell your doctor as soon as possible New results from breast cancer clinical trial show non-breast cancer related causes account for most deaths. New findings from a landmark breast cancer clinical trial involving the drug letrozole show that, in this group of patients, women were more likely to die from non-breast cancer-related causes than from breast cancer-related causes. The research team found that non-breast cancer related causes accounted for 60% of deaths. The top causes of death included: cardiovascular disease including stroke (15%), other malignancies (15%), infection (6%), multiple causes (5%), and non-cardiovascular organ failure (4%). The results were particularly striking for older women. Among women aged 70 years or older, non-breast cancer-related causes accounted for 72% of deaths. The new results are published in the February 12 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The original study results were first published in The New England Journal of Medicine in October 2003 and involved 5,170 post-menopausal breast cancer survivors with a median age of 62 years (range 32 to 94 years). It determined that women who took letrozole for up to five years following 5 years of tamoxifen therapy experienced a significantly reduced risk of cancer recurrence. The clinical trial was coordinated by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials group and was funded in part by the Canadian Cancer Society. Routine use of mammography and improved treatment for breast cancer will mean that more women will survive breast cancer at older ages, at which time they might have a higher risk of death from causes other than breast cancer, says Dr Judith-Anne Chapman, lead author of the study. “The study findings show that we are successfully treating women with breast cancer. However, the study also underscores the need to pay more attention especially to older women and the potential for death from other causes,” Dr Chapman says.

4th Annual Baabul Ilm Scholarship Awards Ceremony
By: Dr. Mohammad Akbar One of the famous sayings of the Prophet (PBUH) is: “Seek knowledge from cradle to grave”. With this saying of the Prophet (PBUH) in mind and the objective to achieve the dynamic Islamic goal, academic development and attainment of knowledge the Babul Ilm Education society was established in 2013. The goal is the advancement of the community by supporting their academic pursuits and channeling the resources in this direction. Baabul Ilm Scholarship Committee comprise of 5 very learned, independent, and impartial members. The committee is chaired by Br. Zaheer Manki and other members include: Br. Haider Abbas, Br. Anwar Ali, Br. Nadeem Kazmi, and Dr. Zareen Naqvi. The Society held its 4th annual Baabul Ilm scholarship awards and graduation ceremony on September 10 at the conference centre, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. This year the office of the Baabul Ilm Education Society took extra measures to ensure complete transparency and impartiality in the selection process. To ensure impartiality a number was assigned to each applicant and at the time of the selection, the committee was not aware of any applicant’s name or family background. The Baabul Ilm Education Society is arguably the only society in BC that does not discriminate on the basis of cast, clan, sect, and ethnic or geographical background of the applicants. This rare trait is evident in the diversity of the award win-
ner both last year as well as this year. During the past 4 years the Society has given away more than C$ 33,000 worth of scholarship awards. This year ten C$1000 scholarship awards were presented to the best and most deserving students of grade 10, 11, and 12. The ceremony was attended by more than 125 people. The panel of speakers this year was studded with four learned and accomplished professionals. The keynote speaker was vice president Vancity Mr. Mohamed Ladak. Other speakers included educationist turn politician and former Member of Parliament from NDP Ms Jinny Sims; sitting Member of Parliament Mr. Sukh Dhaliwal, and dean school of business, KPU, Mr. Wayne Tebb. Wayne Tebb talked about his own experience and shared with the youth of the community and their parents what it takes to enter a good post-secondary institution. He also emphasized on the importance of acquiring good quality knowledge and education. He quoted one of the sayings of Imam Ali (AS) “Knowledge is better than wealth. Knowledge guards you while you have to guard wealth. Wealth decreases by spending while knowledge increases by spending.” Dr. Mohammad Tariq, Counsel General of Pakistan praised the efforts made by the Baabul Ilm Education Society to promote higher education and its importance among the youth of the community. He commanded the hard work put in by the volunteers to make awards ceremony a success every
year. Dr. Tariq donated one C$1000 scholarship in the name of the father of the nation Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He also promised to raise the number of scholarships donated by the counsel general to two next year. Ms. Jinny Sims gave a detailed presentation on the importance of higher education, especially for the immigrant families. Her talk was very informative and insightful for the students graduating from high school in the next couple of years. She also shared her own experience and how she has accomplished so much in her life only with the help of hard work and good quality education. Mr. Sukh Dhaliwal, member of parliament, from Liberal Party of Canada enlightened the audience about the important points of the education policy of the government. He mentioned that although education is a provincial matter but federal govt. keeps close eye and liaison with its counterparts in the provincial governments in order to maintain the high standards set for the higher education institutions. Mr. Nadeem Kazmi in his opening remarks mentioned that the scholarship program is open for all Muslims. The scholarship committee does not discriminate on the basis of nationality, ethnicity, and/or family background. He said “in fact, we want this humble effort to help build harmony within the community by recognizing and celebrating the achievements of all our youth. Our record over the past 3 years is a testament of our truly indiscriminate approach in award-
ing scholarships.” He mentioned that the office of the Baabul Ilm Education Society takes extra measures to ensure complete transparency and impartiality in the selection process. He finished his talk by quoting a very interesting sayings of Imam Ali (AS). Imam Ali says: “You Do Good Things and People Think That You Are a Bad Person Is Better Than You Do Bad Things And People Think That You Are A Good Person”. Dr. Zareen Naqvi Mohammad presented small gifts to the four speakers. In the end Mr. Haider Abbad in his note of thank thanked the learned speakers, the donors, and the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this ceremony a success. Mr. Abbas especially praised the performance and hard work done by Nida Kazmi, Shaina Dallah, Zamina Mithani, and Khadija Akbar who conducted the whole ceremony in most impressive manner and the two young kids Mohammad Hasan and his sister who recited the verses from the holy Quran and their translation. The awards winners this year are: Zaahid Merali, Samir Rehmatullah, Tehreem Fatima, and Shamil Dewji from grade 12. Sadaf Tahera Fahim, Naveed Hasanzadeh, and Iman Devji from grade 11. Dua Naqvi, Reda Naqvi, and Mehab Saleem from grade 10. The program ended with some refreshments and snacks.

By: Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor We often focus on building relationships with others that we forget the essential first step: being friend to yourself. That is the crucial first step if we are to have good relationships with others. How can we have good relationships with others if we don’t even have good relationship with ourselves? 1. Forgive yourself You may have made those mistakes in the past, but is there anything you can do about them? I don’t think so, except learning from them. It’s true that you are not perfect, but neither is everybody else. It’s normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness. 2. Accept things you can’t change There are some things you cannot change, such as your background and your past. So learn to accept them. You will feel much relieved if you treat things you can’t change the way they deserve: just accept them, smile, and move on. 3. Focus on your strengths Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. You always have some strength which give you a unique combination nobody else have. Recognize your strengths and build your life around them. 4. Write your success stories One reason we may not like ourselves is we are too focused on what we don’t have
chapter and allows men to marry more than one?“And if you have reason to fear that you might not act equitably towards orphans, then marry from among [other] women such as are lawful to you – [even] two, or three, or four: but if you have reason to fear that you might not be able to treat them with equal fairness, then [only] one – or [from among] those whom you rightfully possess. This will make it more likely that you will not deviate from the right course. – 4:3 Prior to that the Quran says: “Hence, render unto the orphans their possessions, and do not substitute bad things [of your own] for the good things [that belong to them], and do not consume their possessions together with your own: this, verily, is a great crime.” – 4:2 In other words, marrying two, three or four women is conditional. It is not a general permission. This provision or amendment was necessitated by the then prevailing situation. It was allowed only to ensure the protection of orphans and widows provided absolute justice is maintained in relationship as the Quran made it clear “but if you have reason to fear that you might not be able to treat them with equal fairness, then [only] one.” (4:3) In other word, monogamy is the general rule. Sometimes, some people make the argument that if the wife is barren or in terminal illness, second wife in the presence of the first wife is allowed. This is not the intention of the Quran as it says “He gives both male and female [to whomever He wills], and causes to be barren whomever He wills: for, verily, He is all-knowing, infinite in His power.” – 42:50 In other words to be barren is not a requirement for marrying second time. Thus, the Quran is absolutely clear on a monogamous marriage. Divorce Marriage (nikah) is a contract for a peaceful, balanced and dignified relationship. The Quran recognizes the possibility of separation between a husband and a wife if the relationship becomes imbalanced, and undignified and differences can be irreconcilable. For this the Quran uses the term Talaq (divorce). Thus, the Quran gives minute details of the process of separation or divorce and does not leave it to the arbitrary decision of one partner. The Quran first advises a husband and
wife to reconcile their differences amicably on their own and if the two fail to do so then describes an elaborate process to seek a mutually agreed solution. It says: “And if you have reason to fear that a breach might occur between a [married] couple, appoint an arbiter from among his people and an arbiter from among her people; if they both want to set things aright, God may bring about their reconciliation. Behold, God is indeed allknowing, aware. – 4:35 In other words an arbiter from both sides would be appointed to resolve the differences and if the arbitration council fails to help the husband and wife reconcile their differences, then they can recommend the divorce or if they have been given the authority to take a decision, they can pronounce and execute the divorce. The decision to divorce is not an individual decision, not certainly a prerogative of men to pronounce the word talaq three times to end the relationship. What would happen afterwards? Both husband and wife are free to marry again. However there is a condition in this provision for wife. She would wait for three months and if she is pregnant, she would wait until the delivery. During this time, husband is responsible for all her expenses. A man can marry without waiting but if he wants to reconcile with his wife then he can renew the marriage contract once again during this period. Thus the Quran says: “ And during this period their husbands are fully entitled to take them back, if they desire reconciliation; but, in accordance with justice, the rights of the wives [with regard to their husbands] are equal to the [husbands’] rights with regard to them, although men have precedence over them [in this respect] And God is almighty, wise. – 2:228 The expression that “men have precedence over them [in this respect]” is an additional opportunity given to them to honor the contract. In fact, it is an additional responsibility. After the reconciliation of the first talaq, if the relationship become sour and irreconcilable then the second talaq can be executed provided the process used during the first talaq is followed. However, if the talaq is sought and decreed the third time, then it would be irrevocable. A woman is entitled to marry after this third talaq and only if her second husband dies or divorces her three times, her previous husband can remarry
that we forget about what we have. So make a list of your achievements; write your success stories. They do not have to be big things; there are a lot of small but important achievements in our life. For example, if you have some good friends, that’s already an achievement. If you have a good family, that is also an achievement. 5. Stop comparing yourself with others You are unique. You can never be like other people, and neither can other people be like you. The way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. Instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. You have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so it’s useless to compare yourself with others. 6. Always be true to yourself You don’t like other people lying to you; similarly, you won’t like yourself if you know that you lie to yourself. Whether you realize it or not, that gives your mind a reason not to like yourself. That’s why it’s important to always be true to yourself. In whatever you do, be honest and follow your conscience. Marriage and Divorce – A Quranic perspective
oming together of a man and a woman to form a family is considered the most essential religious rite in all religions of the world. A family is the foundation of a society and a center of nurturing the future generation in a safe and healthy environment. It is the nucleus of human civilization. The Quran uses the word nikah for this union of a man and a woman. It literally means getting absorbed in each other the way rain water absorbs in earth. Hence the Quran describes husband and wife each other’s Zauj (equal partner). It means that both are essential for each other in family union as each complements the other in a manner that without the one the other cannot consider himself or herself complete. It is obvious that in the absence of compatibility, the family life will be not be balanced and healthy. The Quran describes nikah a solid contract between two adults. Thus a marriage solemnized before adulthood is not considered a nikah in the Quranic explanation. In fact, the Quran declares the age of marriage as a mark of adulthood. “And test the orphans [under your supervision] until they reach a marriageable age.”- 4:6 The Quran gives absolute free choice to both men and women to select their life partner. On one hand, it tells men “then marry from among women such as are lawful or desirous to you” (4:3), while on the other it tells women that men cannot hold them against their will, “O you who have attained to faith! It is not lawful for you to [try to] become heirs to your wives [by holding onto them] against their will” – 4:19 Thus the Quran promotes the idea of a balanced, compatible, contractual marriage to ensure equality, dignity and responsibility. The objective of such a union is clearly defined when in chapter four and verse 24, it says that the marriage is a union of like minded people to promote dignified relations. The Quran also promotes the idea of monogamy. It does not give free license to men to marry more than one wife. In fact, the Quran talks of marrying second time only when the first wife is no longer there. “But if you desire to give up a wife and to take another in her stead,” (4:20) In other words, marrying second time can take place only when the first wife is not there. How can we reconcile this Quranic directive with another verse that occurs in the same
her again. These are the simple rules of marriage and divorce. The Quran does not allow its followers to decide things arbitrarily. The general assumption that pronouncing the word “talaq” three times by husband amounts to a divorce, is not a Quranic decree or right. In fact, it is against the spirit of the contractual relationship and basic norms to maintain a healthy family. The practice of pronouncing the word “talaq” three times by husband is in contradiction of what the Quran says. We must realize that the Quranic rules governing the marriage and divorce were interpolated with values and custom that were and are still strong in patriarchal societies, arbitrarily decided on the basis of the opinions of human beings. These rules have nothing to do with the divine guidelines. It is, thus, imperative to develop an honest and accurate understanding of the Quran and discard interpolation that has occurred over the centuries. Giving men the absolute right to verbally terminate the family by simply saying, “I divorce you three times in one sitting or in three separate sittings” is nothing but a reassertion of the old patriarchal system that allowed men to dictate their terms upon their women. It violates the spirit and letter of the contractual relationship. It puts women in a state of total dependence of her husband and above all it makes her feel that her survival as a wife depends on the will of her husband. It is nothing but glorified slavery. It is illogical, unjust and contrary to the divine wisdom. This custom is responsible for ruining the lives of millions of women who have suffered silently at the altar of what is called the religion. This custom needs to be analyzed in the light of the Quran and amended and changed because it is in clear violation of the divine justice. By: Aslam Abdullah Source: IslamiCity

LIFESTYLE
From the pen of the Founding Editor of ‘The Miracle.’
Excerpt from the book ‘The Last Salute’
“Mobile, 211-Ejecting!”
Sqn. Ldr. Nusrat Hussain (R) nh.guidingstar@gmail.com had several friendly meetings with Air Vice-Marshal Abbas Mirza in Vancouver during which we remembered the good old Air Force days, talked about politics in Pakistan, and discussed my book, ‘The Last Salute.’ One late afternoon after an early super at a restaurant in West Vancouver he recounted his experience of two ejections and of touching Mach 2 speed while flying the F-104 Star Fighter aircraft. I observed that these incidents sounded attractive for my book. When he graciously agreed to narrate them, then I immediately took out my cell phone and recorded our conversation while sitting inside the car parked at the restaurant. Air Vice-Marshal Abbas Mirza is mentioned in two earlier chapters of this book: first, I seek guidance from him on the occasion of leaving the Pakistan Air Force; and second, he becomes a part of the story as the president of the Board of Inquiry in the crash of General Zia-Ul-Haq, assassinated president of Pakistan. He had been ejected once from the F-86 aircraft fitted with a C2 seat having a limit of a minimum of 250 ft above the ground and 100 knots of speed for a successful ejection. Second ejection took him out of the cockpit of the F-6 aircraft while using the Chinese ejection seat. On the third of June, 1967, at the start of the Arab-Israeli War, Abbas Mirza, who was at that time a Flight Lieutenant, had a little quarrel with his friend Flight Lieutenant Aman-Ullah over flying the test mission of an F-86 aircraft. As young eagles, they often struggled to grab every opportunity of getting airborne. Mirza won the argument and Aman-Ullah agreed to perform the duties of the mobile officer. He would work in a mobile hut, which is a small glass house close to the threshold of the landing runway. It is a mini control tower equipped with radio transmitters and manned by an operational pilot who provides help from the ground to the airborne aircraft in any emergency. They were posted in No. 26 Squadron at Peshawar Air Base as instructors on the F-86 aircraft. Maintenance Squadron cleared an overstressed F-86 aircraft following a major
I
overhaul. It was awaiting a test flight known as the FCF (Functional Check Flight). Fighter pilots enjoyed flying the test flights as this duty provided the rare opportunity of flying a clean aircraft. The absence of extra fuel tanks and weapons increased the maneuverability of the aircraft. The pleasure of flying a sleek machine remained higher than the dangers associated with the handling of a recently repaired aircraft. Call sign ‘211’ - Mirza - taxied out on a sunny day, perfect for flying, although a gusty wind of about 15 knots prevailed around the airfield. After takeoff, he carried out a low-level straight run at 200 feet above the ground in front of the mobile at 400 knots to show off and to make his buddy Aman-Ullah jealous. Immediately after, he pulled up in to a lazy vertical roll topping out at around 10 thousand feet before climbing on to 20 thousand to begin the entire required tests which progressed normally. He could visualize Aman-Ullah envying him. They are great buddies till today who always enjoyed their flying. Aman-Uallh was a superb pilot in his own right and was cited with shooting down at least two Indian aircraft. He retired from the Air Force after rising to the rank of Air Commodore. At about twenty to twenty-one thousand feet he reduced speed to 105 knots for checking the stalling characteristics in the last part of the exercise before putting the aircraft into a spin. When the speed dropped to 105 knots, the aircraft started to buffet before stalling. When he pushed forward the stick to recover out of the stall, he then found that it was stuck in the full back position into his stomach. Unable to push the stick forward, he tried the alternate trim. His efforts were fruitless, and the aircraft continued to buffet by its nose going up in high attitude. He called the mobile officer to inform him about the emergency, and explained that the aircraft was about to enter the spin. From the mobile hut Aman-Ullah advised Mirza to check the hydraulic pressures. Finding the hydraulic pressures normal, he pulled the alternate handle. That action raised the pressure to 4000 PSI, but nothing happened to the control column. Meanwhile, the aircraft entered into a spin and his fall towards the ground increased at a rapid speed. He ap-
plied the opposite rudder to come out of the spin, but it didn’t stop. Recovery out of a spin demanded application of the opposite rudder and pushing the stick to its full forward position. Nothing worked. Spinning down rapidly, trapped behind the control stick, he continued struggling with the control column without any joy. Therefore, he called mobile: “Mobile: unable to recover from spin, control column stuck in full back position.” He repeatedly heard the frantic calls of Aman-Ullah from the mobile, “211 Eject.”— “211 Eject.” Mirza kept trying to recover. But when he looked at the altimeter passing through 10,000 feet, he called mobile: “Mobile -211 ejecting.” He followed the proper ejection procedure, which he had practiced dry, many times before, on the ground. This procedure required him to follow a two-phase process: first, jettisoning the canopy; and then, firing the seat. He lowered his head to avoid being hit by the canopy and then pulled the trigger on the right side of his seat. When the canopy jettisoned, he straightened up again, positioned his head fully back onto the headrest, and stretched his back as much as possible to avoid stress fracture. A glance at the altimeter revealed that he was passing 7000 feet. He squeezed the ejection trigger that immediately fired the seat out of the cockpit. Luckily, none of his body parts touched the fuselage or the tail when he was thrown tumbling out of the cockpit. The moment he came out of the cockpit, the wind removed the helmet from his head to leave it strapped around the neck. He felt a positive tug, looked up, and saw the chute fully blossomed. After putting the helmet back onto his head, he tried to stabilize the chute that had sharply oscillated because of the strong wind. He put on the oxygen mask; activated the emergency oxygen bottle hanging on his left side; and tried to control the swing of the parachute that had turned violent by then. He thought the swing might go beyond vertical, making him land on the chute itself. Oscillation grew stronger to about 15 to 20 degrees on either side. Looking down later, he could see the village below and people looking upwards towards him. Fear of hitting someone during landing worried him.
Nusrat with AVM Abbas Mirza in Vancouver
To his good luck, he missed them all, hit a mud wall, and landed with a big thud in front of a buffalo. The buffalo was more scared than Mirza and it jumped away without hurting him. It took him about ten minutes to hit the ground after ejecting from around 7000 feet. The villagers put him on a cot and gave him VIP treatment in a display of great hospitality. He drank a lot of milk before picked up by the Search and Rescue helicopter. Severe shooting pain arose in his right ankle, which was later confirmed to be broken. He remained in the hospital nursing his only injury for twenty days. When questioned about his feelings and fears during the emergency, AVM Mirza became philosophical. He firmly believed in the theory of time dilation. He explained it as a difference in the elapsed time of an event measured by observers at two different locations. Mirza believed that his brain worked at an extraordinary speed during this emergency because of the pressure he was under. He performed the necessary actions very quickly in a short time that appeared as an eternity to him. However, when listening to his tape-recorded conversation it took less than a minute from his call of entering into a spin to his call of ejection. Throughout the ordeal, he remained focused on dealing with the emergency. Feelings for any loved ones or fear of death had never even crossed his mind. This was an emergency that was not outlined in the emergency procedures, but professionalism and training took over and action was taken to try and recover with the help of ground control. There was no time to think of anything else. The possibility of what might have happened occurs much later when one is safe and sound and then one thanks the Almighty for his protection.

Pakistan stroll to 3-0 after Imad three-for Pakistan completed a 3-0 whitewash of West Indies with a comfortable eight-wicket win in Abu Dhabi that exposed the World T20 champions’ weaknesses in conditions not conducive to big hitting. Sent in to bat, West Indies stuttered to 103 for 5 in their 20 overs, failing to get into gear after losing three top-order wickets to Imad Wasim’s non-turning left-arm spin. Chasing less than six runs an over, Pakistan were never under pressure, especially after Jerome Taylor sprayed the new ball around in his first two overs, conceding four leg-side fours, a leg-side wide, and a set of leg-byes down to the fine leg boundary. Kesrick Williams, the debutant fast bowler, dismissed both openers in the sixth over of the innings, but Pakistan easily shrugged that setback aside as Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik steered them home with an unbroken partnership of 68 for the third wicket. Malik ended the match off the first ball of the 16th over, shovelling Carlos Brathwaite for a six over long-on. When they won the World T20 earlier this year, West Indies only really struggled in two games, a narrow win against South Africa and a defeat to Afghanistan. Both games
came in Nagpur, the venue with the largest outfield and most spin-friendly pitch of the tournament. Abu Dhabi’s outfield is even larger, and while its pitch didn’t offer much turn, it didn’t give the batsmen much bounce or pace to work with. This meant West Indies would need to look outside their usual T20 template to find a trustworthy run-scoring method. They didn’t. By the start of the ninth over, three of their batsmen had been bowled by Imad’s stock in-ducker, and only one of them, Chadwick Walton, could claim mitigating circumstances. Having just come to the crease, he was undone by a back-ofa-length ball that crept through him at shin height. The previous ball, knowing fully well the dangers of going across the line to an unfailingly stump-to-stump bowler on a pitch of low bounce, Johnson Charles had attempted a slog-sweep and missed. Then, Dwayne Bravo, having added 14 with Marlon Samuels in 21 balls, was bowled through the gate going for an open-faced sliced drive. In typical T20 conditions, it is almost essential for batting teams to take such risks. In the specific circumstances of Tuesday’s game, West Indies needed a dif-
ferent approach. Perhaps they needed to peek into the Virat Kohli/MS Dhoni playbook, perhaps, and bunt the ball towards deep fielders and push for twos. West Indies didn’t try that approach: they only ran nine twos in their 20 overs. Not coincidentally, Marlon Samuels, never the fleetest or most enthusiastic runner between the wickets, was at the crease for all but 2.3 overs of the innings. From the non-striker’s end, he also played a part in Andre Fletcher getting run out in the fifth over. In the end, Samuels finished unbeaten on 42 off 59 balls, but he was by no means alone in struggling to up the tempo. Conditions are certainly not conducive to big hitting when Kieron Pollard ends up not out on 16 off 17 balls without hitting a boundary or a six. A lot of this was down to Pakistan’s bowling. The spinners hit an awkward, short-of-good-length area and attacked the stumps, the ideal strategy for a pitch with low bounce, denying the batsman the opportunity to get on the front foot while also imperilling the horizontal-bat shots. The three left-arm seamers, including the
debutant Rumman Raees, hit the same sort of length while constantly taking pace off the ball. The few boundaries that came were off rare deliveries that offered a bit of swinging room: Samuels played a crisp front-foot cut off Imad, and pulled a too-short slower ball from Sohail Tanvir; Nicholas Pooran slogswept Mohammad Nawaz into the grass banks, a shot that may have cleared the stadium roof in Sharjah. Two balls later, West Indies were served another reminder of the difficulty of hitting big shots on this ground, as Pooran connected meatily with another big swing only to pick out deep midwicket. Palestinians call on FIFA to ban matches in settlements
An official from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Tuesday called on football’s ruling body FIFA to ban Israeli teams from playing matches in Jewish-only settlements across the occupied West Bank. “By allowing games to be held on Palestin-
ian land where settlements have been built, FIFA is involved in political and business activity that supports these settlements, which are considered illegitimate and illegal by international law,” Ali Ishaq, a member of the PLO’s committee in charge of the sports department, said in a statement. The call comes two days after New York-based Human Rights Watch urged FIFA to act on the issue of six clubs who play in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. “By holding games on stolen land, FIFA is tarnishing the beautiful game of football,” said Sari Bashi, the director of HRW for Israeli and the Palestinian territories. To comply with international law, she said, the clubs “need to move their games inside Israel”. Israel has militarily occupied
the West Bank since it seized the territory in the 1967 war. Palestinians have long opposed the participation in the Israeli championships of the settlement clubs, which play in Israel’s third, fourth and fifth divisions. FIFA is expected to discuss the issue at an October 13-14 meeting of its executive committee. “FIFA will continue its efforts to promote friendly relations between our member associations in accordance with FIFA statutes and identify feasible solutions for the benefit of the game and everyone involved,” it said in a statement to AFP news agency. The Israel Football Association responded to the HRW’s report by saying the sport was being “dragged from the football field into a political one”, but that it had faith FIFA would deal correctly with the issue. The Palestinian Football Association (PFA)
head Jibril Rajoub confirmed to AFP that it asked the Asian Football Confederation and European Union to take up the case, and it was hopeful FIFA’s executive committee would. In theory, if the issue is not resolved, the PFA could renew its efforts to expel or suspend Israel from FIFA. The MEPs cited UEFA’s 2014 decision to ban Crimean football clubs from taking part in Russian competitions as a precedent for barring the settlement teams. Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem are illegal under international law and have been a major stumbling block in negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis. “Let me be absolutely clear,” UN chief Ban Ki-moon said earlier this month, “settlements are illegal under international law.” Source: Al-Jazeera
