UNSC to vote on ending Israeli settlement activity

The United Nations Security Council is due to vote on a draft resolution that would demand Israel “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem” Egypt circulated the draft late on Wednesday and a vote was scheduled for 3pm (20:00 GMT) on Thursday. Israeli settlements are illegal under international law and seen as major stumbling block to peace efforts as they are built on Palestinian land occupied by Israel. The Palestinians want an iWndependent state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in a 1967 war. Israel disputes that settlements are illegal and says their final status should be determined in any future talks on Palestinian statehood. The UN maintains that settlements are illegal and has repeatedly called on Israel to halt them, but UN officials have reported a surge in construction over the past months. A resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the United States, France, Russia, Britain or China to be adopted. A similar resolution was vetoed by the US in 2011. Wednesday’s draft text says the establishment of settlements by Israel has “no legal validity and con- Continued on Pg 6

When Fighting for Regional Control Gets Ugly

Relations between Russia and Turkey have long been tense over the ongoing conflict in Syria. Russia has been helping Syrian forces in repulsing rebel resistance in the northern city of Aleppo. The two sides have been fighting in Syria for more than five years, while the violence has caused more than 2.5 million refugees from Syria to enter Turkey. Regime change: Interested in Assad’s ouster, Turkey has been trying to do damage control by renovating ties with Russia after shooting down a Russian warplane over Syria last year. Foiled coup attempt: Turkey has been hit by multiple bomb attacks that have been claimed by Kurdish militants, and beat back an attempted coup in July, where rogue soldiers commandeered tanks, warplanes and helicopters in attempt to overthrow Parliament. Since then, the government has launched a sweeping crackdown on the judiciary, police and civil service in attempt to root out the coup plotters. Some army personnel ended up behind bars. Politically motivated assassination: “We regard this as a terrorist act,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. “Terrorism will not win and we will fight against it decisively.” President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the killing of Russia’s ambassador to Turkey was a despicable provocation aimed at spoiling Russia-Turkey ties and derailing Moscow’s attempts to find, with Iran and Turkey, a solution for the Syria crisis. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday he had agreed in a telephone call with Russia´s

Vladimir Putin that their cooperation and solidarity in fighting terrorism should be even stronger after the killing of the Russian ambassador in Turkey. Erdogan called the killing a clear provocation aimed at damaging relations between Turkey and Russia at a time of normalisation. Both leaders have sent strong messages to those behind the attack, underlining that bilateral ties will not be adversely affected. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country’s ties with Russia are crucial for the region, and those expecting these ties to be harmed will be disappointed. A similar message came from Moscow, which described the murder as a terrorist attack. Positive gestures: The murder may even bring Moscow and Ankara closer, as both leaders are determined not to allow it to cast a shadow over relations. Both countries played a vital role in brokering the latest cease-fire allowing civilians to leave Aleppo. Bad motives: They are not going to allow it to collapse. Recent terrorist attacks in Turkey are only to show the country is unstable. The assassination is aimed at harming bilateral ties and showing that Turkey is no longer safe for foreign diplomats, and isolate it regionally. Aware of these aims, Turkey will further strengthen ties with Russia and regional countries. “Russia has been on the wrong side from the start” in the Syrian war, especially given that most of the victims of the Assad regime are Sunni Muslims, and Sunnis are a large majority among Muslims in the Arab world and in Turkey, re-

‘Kinder Morgan Pipeline’ proven Risky’ & ‘Beginning of a sweet Victory’ By: Gulshan Aalani The genuine concern for environment, speaking up and standing up against any kind of environmental pollution is everybody’s duty, and should not be supported in any circumstances. It seems the bravery and hard work of Pipe line protesters is paying off. The activists indigenous Sioux tribe joined by hundreds of U.S. Military Veterans, showing their concern for the Pipeline being too close to the reservation that could pollute the Water endangering the health. It also means the livelihood of people would be in danger without clean Water, increasing their suffering. We should think twice before jeopardizing the health and wellness of people by endangering Water, as Water is the most needed life giving entity.

tired U.S. General Barry McCaffrey told CNBC. In the meantime, the assassination of Karlov is unlikely to dramatically alter anything in the warwracked region. A senior Russian parliamentarian told the Interfax news agency that the assassination will not disrupt previously scheduled talks between Russia, Turkey and Iran in Moscow. The attack on Russia’s ambassador to Turkey is the latest in a string of incidents to rock relations between Tayyip Erdogan’s and Vladimir Putin’s countries – both of which have vital interests in war-torn Syria. The shooting could escalate tensions and has the potential to start a war between the two countries. Turkey’s foreign ministry said it would not allow the attack to cast a shadow over Ankara’s relations with Moscow. “The attack comes at a bad time: Moscow and Ankara have only recently restored diplomatic ties after Turkey downed a Russian aircraft in November 2015,” the Stratfor think-tank said. “Though the attack will strain relations between the two countries, it is not likely to rupture them altogether.” The US State Department, involved in diplomatic contacts with Russia in an attempt to resolve a refugee crisis unfolding around the city of Aleppo, condemned the attack. However, the experts are of the view that agreement over action in Syria is difficult. Military expert Alexander Golts said earlier this year: “I think until now they have no clear decision because it’s clear that their interests are colliding in Syria.” Tensions have escalated in recent weeks as Russian-backed Syrian forces have fought for control of the eastern part of Aleppo,

triggering a stream of refugees. In September this year, Russia expressed “grave concern” over Turkey’s brutal military advances in Syria as Moscow continues to back President Bashar al Assad. This followed accusations Turkey breached Syria’s fragile cease-fire on February 28 by targeting Kurdish forces in northern Syria. And in retaliation, the Russians cut off Turkey’s primary rebel supply line to Aleppo. Russians keep arming and supporting Assad, while Turkish government demands for removing him. Negotiating peace: Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed on Tuesday to guarantee Syria peace talks and backed expanding a ceasefire in the war-torn country, Russian foreign minister said after talks with counterparts. “Iran, Russia and Turkey are ready to assist in preparing the agreement in the making between the Syrian government and the opposition and to become its guarantor,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, citing a joint statement. “The ministers agree with the importance of widening the ceasefire, of free access for humanitarian aid and movement of civilians onto Syrian territories,” he added. Indeed, foreign lands are captured and occupied militarily, yet people’s hearts cannot be won. Hence, writ of the state is never established. Same thing applies to militants who tend to go on killing spree indiscriminately. “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”~ Nelson Mandela

Demonstrators said rubber bullets were also fired, but police did not confirm those reports. ISCC and MAT Strongly Condemn Attacks on Places of Worships in Egypt and Pakistan By: Imam Soharwardy (Calgary) attacking Muslim mosques and

The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC) and the Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) strongly condemn the recent attacks on a Coptic Church in Egypt and a Ahmadi (Qadyani) place of worship in Pakistan. These were un-Islamic violent and criminal acts which are condemned by the overwhelming majority of Muslims. These attacks were completely against the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). We express our deep sympathies with the victims and their families. We are saddened by these violent acts. In Islam respecting and protecting the lives and the properties of non-Muslim minorities in Muslim countries is an obligation on all Muslims. Even at the time of war Muslim army is required not to attack the places of worship of any religion. How a Muslim can attack non-Muslim places of worship? However, the fanatics and extremist are not only targeting non-Muslim places of worships but they are also

holy sites in Muslim countries. Taliban, Daesh (ISIS) and other terrorist organizations have killed thousands of Muslims and destroyed hundreds of mosques and Islamic shrines in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Mali, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Just a few months ago the extremists attacked one of the holiest sites of Islam in Madinah City where Prophet’s (peace be upon him) mosque and the holy shrine of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are located. ISCC and MAT urges the media, Christians and the followers of Ahmadiyya religion not to call any Muslim who grows long beard and wears a turban a person of Muslim clergy unless verified thoroughly. They are not necessarily clergy of Islam. Thanks For any questions, please contact Imam Soharwardy at 1-416-994-5467.

Raheel Sharif ‘helped me out’ in leaving Pakistan: Musharraf Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has claimed that exarmy chief Gen Raheel Sharif helped him leave the country by keeping the government from pressuring the courts. Speaking during a talk show on Dunya News last night, he said: “Well he (Raheel Sharif) did help me and I am absolutely clear and grateful. I have been his boss and I have been the army chief before him... he helped out, because the cases are politicised, they put me on the ECL, they turned it into a political issue.” When asked to explain by the host how the recently retired army chief helped him, Musharraf responded saying by “influencing the courts”. He elaborated: “See unfortunately one has to say it, but shouldn’t have to… our judiciary should move towards justice.”“These courts work under pressure behind the scenes and then give decisions. The army chief had a role to play in releasing the pressure behind the scenes.”

When asked who exactly Gen (r) Sharif had to relieve pressure from, Musharraf said, “Not from the judges but from the government. The pressure the government was putting on the courts was removed. “Once he [Gen Sharif] got the government to relieve the pressure that they were exerting, the courts gave their judgement and allowed me to go abroad for treatment,” Musharraf elaborated. Musharraf had left the country for Dubai in March earlier this year hours after the interior ministry issued a notification to remove his name from the exit control list (ECL). The government notification followed the Supreme Court’s order to lift the ban on his foreign travel. But the order from the top court had come with the rider that the federal government or the three-judge special court trying the retired general for treason was free to make decisions to regulate his custody or restrict his movement. Apart from murder cases of Benazir Bhutto, Nawab Akbar Bugti and Ghazi Abdul Rasheed, the retired general is facing treason charges for imposing emergency rule in November 2007, arresting judges and limiting their powers. His name was kept on the Exit Control List for more than 20 months.Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan had said in March that Musharraf had committed to facing all cases against him in court and had “promised to return in four to six weeks”. ISLAMABAD: The census should be postponed till all Afghan refugees have returned to their country and till the Baloch who have left their province due to insurgencies have returned to Balochistan, said president of the National Party (NP) Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo on Wednesday. “It is also not wise to talk of the Afghania province because if that Pandora’s Box is opened, it will lead to a crisis for the whole country,” Mr Bizenjo said at a news conference at Parliament Lodges.Senators Mir Kabeer Mohammad and Dr Ashok Kumar and the president of the Punjab chapter of the party, Ayub Malik were also present. If census is held now, it will disrupt population balance in Balochistan, KP, NP chief warns The press conference seemed to have been held as a reaction to demands made by the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai on Dec 18 in Islamabad, when he had said that the Pakhtuns who have been living in Pakistan for decades should not be sent back to Afghanistan. He had also demanded that the 150,000 square kilometre area from the Durand Line to Mianwali be declared the ‘Afghania’ province.Addressing the press conference on Wednesday, Mr Bizenjo said his party had been speaking against the settlement of Afghan refugees in Pakistan since the 1980s and had been demanding they

be sent back to their country.“According to government records, there are around three million Afghan refugees in Pakistan and if the census is held now, it will affect the population balance in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP),” he said.“As most Afghan refugees live in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, they will upset the population balance in these provinces.A large number of Baloch have migrated to. The census should be held in these two provinces after the Afghans have left and the Baloch have returned home,” he said. Mr Bizenjo said some Afghans have managed to get fake CNICs and that the Ministry of Interior has taken action against a number of officials in the National Database and Registration Authority in this regard. The Constitution requires the census to be conducted every 10 years and this requirement has not been fulfilled since 1998.After a number of interventions by the Supreme Court, the federal government has announced the next census will start on March 15, 2017. When reminded that NP and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party were part of the coalition government in the centre and Balochistan, Mr Bizenjo said they have different policies and are free to make independent decisions. ISLAMABAD: In a decision expected to raise eyebrows among opposition parties as well as legal circles about the effectiveness of the National Accountability Bureau, a top government functionary facing serious allegations of corruption was on Wednesday ‘cleared’ by NAB, paving the way for his release from custody. Mushtaq Ahmed Raisani, the then finance secretary of Ba-

lochistan, hit the headlines in May this year when NAB seized over Rs730 million hard cash from his house in Quetta hours after he was taken into custody. As the drama involving the recovery of such a large amount began to unfold, the finance man was also found to be owning as many as a dozen houses in Karachi, whose estimated cost was said to be around Rs2 billion. Aleppo evacuation will be complete ‘in days’

N E W S

The evacuation of Aleppo should take no more than two days, Russian and Turkish foreign ministers say, following a rare breakthrough and show of unity by world powers over Syria that allows UN monitors to observe the operation. A total 37,500 evacuees have so far left the war-torn Syrian city and the goal is to complete all evacuations by Wednesday, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish foreign minister, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. The evacuation of of Aleppo would be complete in a maximum of two days, Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said. Lavrov said that Russia, Iran and Turkey had used their influence to make the evacuation happen and that the 19-member International Syria Support Group including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the US had not been able to enforce its decisions. Cavusoglu travelled to Moscow after holding talks with his Russian and Iranian counterparts to discuss the future of Syria. At a meeting on Tuesday in the Russian capital, Turkey, Iran and Russia agreed to guarantee the Syria peace talks and backed expanding a ceasefire in the country, laying down their claim as the main power brokers in the conflict. “Iran, Russia and Turkey are ready to assist in preparing the agreement in the making between the Syrian government and the opposition and to become its guarantor,” Lavrov said, citing a joint statement. “The ministers agree with the importance of widening the ceasefire, of free access for humanitarian aid and movement of civilians on Syrian territory.” Cavusoglu said in comments translated into Russian that the ceasefire should cover the entire Syrian territory but exclude the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group and the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra Front, which was linked to al-Qaeda). For its part, the Syrian government has authorised the UN to send an additional 20 expatriate staff to east Aleppo, where they will

monitor the ongoing evacuation of thousands of people, according to a UN spokesperson. Jens Laerke, speaking in Geneva, said: “This will almost triple the number of international staff currently deployed to Aleppod. “The task is to monitor and observe the evacuations.” The UN Security Council on Monday unanimously called for UN officials and others to observe the evacuation and monitor the safety of civilians. The UN staff, already in its Damascus office, will travel to Aleppo “as soon as possible”, Laerke said. Aleppo, Syria’s second city, was once a cultural and economic hub before being split between government and rebel control in late 2012. Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford, reporting from Reyhanli in neighbouring Turkey, said there were concerns about “the kind of access” UN monitors would be granted once they are in Syria. “There are reports of harassment by some of the Iranian-backed militias in that area,” he said. “And of course ... there are concerns about how rebel forces may cooperate.” According to UN aid partners, the number of people who had arrived in Idlib - where Aleppo evacuees are being taken was around 19,000, the UN’s Laerke said. , World Health Organization’s spokesman. “Out of those 301, 93 patients were referred to hospitals in Turkey, others are in hospitals in [opposition-held] Idlib and western rural Aleppo.” The vast majority have trauma injuries. Laerke said some 750 people have been evacuated from Foua and Kefraya, two Shia-majority villages besieged for months by rebel groups. Syria’s conflict started as a largely unarmed uprising against President Bashar al-Assad’s rule in March 2011, but it quickly turned into a full-scale civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands. Attempts to negotiate a lasting ceasefire have failed time and again. Source: Al-Jazeera

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Barack Obama announced a ban on offshore oil and gas activity in the Arctic in a joint statement issued Tuesday. “Today, President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau are proud to launch actions ensuring a strong, sustainable and viable Arctic economy and ecosystem, with low-impact shipping, science-based management of marine resources, and free from the future risks of offshore oil and gas activity,” the statement read. Obama has permanently banned oil and gas development in U.S. waters in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Canada declared a five-year ban on new licensing in all Arctic waters, with a review based on climate and marine science at the end of that period. The Canadian government is also revising its policy for the North. The Liberals said they are replacing the previous government’s northern strategy with an “Arctic policy framework.” Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s northern strategy put an emphasis on asserting Canadian sovereignty through the Canadian Rangers and addressing economic concerns through natural resource development. There will be a specific component of the policy geared toward Inuit people. Canada and the U.S. also announced they will start a process to identify low-impact shipping corridors. The process will include determining where vessels will

not be allowed to sail and gauging what kind of infrastructure and emergency response systems will be needed for northern shipping routes. Both countries said they would regulate the development of fisheries in the Arctic. The U.S. said it will support existing commercial fishing closures in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. Canada will work with northern and Indigenous communities to build Arctic fisheries based on scientific regulation. Northwest Territories Premier Bob McLeod said the federal government did not consult with his people ahead of today’s announcement. “We are concerned by the announcement and firmly believe northerners should be involved in making decisions that affect them and their economic future, and in this instance, they weren’t,” McLeod said. “The North is an expensive place to live and there aren’t a lot of options for people who need good jobs so they can provide for themselves and their families.” McLeod said his government is committed to environmentally sound growth, but that limiting fossil fuel development could be harmful to the sustainability of the northern way of life. “I know the prime minister shares my concerns about generating growth for the North and was pleased that he committed to work with us immediately on a strategy for making lasting, positive change for the North.” Environmentalists said are celebrating the

‘Thousands may have fled to China’ due to fighting

As many as 15,000 people have fled across Myanmar’s border into China in the past month as fighting between the army and armed ethnic groups intensifies, the UN says. Aid access to people affected by conflict in the northern states of Kachin and Shan “is getting worse, not better”, Pierre Peron, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Myanmar, said by email. The OCHA said in an update on Monday that, as well as the estimated 15,000 new refugees, another 2,400 people have been displaced internally in the northern part of Shan state since November 20, when a coalition of four rebel armies attacked military and police outposts. Dozens have also drowned trying to cross the river that separates Myanmar from Malaysia. The government of Myanmar has already banned its citizens from working in Malaysia. Weeks of clashes and the new displacements have damaged Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s hopes of securing peace in the long-running conflicts in the mountainous border areas, a goal she has made her administration’s top priority. Observers fear that Suu Kyi’s fledgling civilian administration is unable to rein in the army, which retains political power and is free from civilian oversight. Critics have accused her of turning a blind eye to the plight of Rohingya ethnic minority, who have faced discrimination from the authorities for decades. Echoing a November 30 UN statement, Amnesty International on Sunday said abuse of the ethnic minorities based mostly in western Rakhine state might “amount to crimes against humanity”. “Humanitarian access to conflict areas in Kachin and Shan states is currently worse than at any point in the

past few years,” Peron said. “This has seriously affected the ability of humanitarian organisations to provide life-saving aid to tens of thousands of [internally displaced and other conflict-affected people.” The army said it would step up operations in Shan state following the November 20 attacks. A Myanmar police official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to reporters, told Reuters news agency that government forces had clashed with armed groups in northern Shan at least 170 times in the past month. In a separate offensive to the north, government forces took control of a strategic hill close to the Kachin Independence Army’s headquarters at Laiza on the Chinese border on Saturday, according to state media. Shells reportedly landed near a camp for the internally displaced just outside Laiza on Sunday, the OCHA said, citing unconfirmed reports that it could not verify independently. No casualties were reported but shelters were damaged and about 400 people had to be evacuated, it said. A Myanmar government spokesman was not immediately available for comment. Meanwhile, at least 30,000 have been internally displaced in Rakhine state, where fighting and crackdowns have been severe since nine border police officers were killed near Myanmar’s border with Bangladesh. While thousands of Rohingya have found shelter in Bangladesh, the country is now turning away further arrivals of boatloads of fleeing families. Human Rights Watch has released several sets of satellite images showing that several Rohingya villages in Rakhine state have been burned and destroyed since late October. Source: Al-Jazeera

drilling ban in a region that’s among the most affected by climate change. World Wildlife Fund-Canada president David Miller said Arctic conditions create an “unnecessary level of risk when it comes to oil and gas extraction.” “Today’s announcement shows an impressive commitment to protect one of our most ecologically sensitive areas,” Miller said in a statement. Environmental Defence released a statement heaping “huge praise” on the Canadian and American governments. The organization said the decision to stop drilling will allow for the greatest chance of keeping the Arctic ecosystem and people healthy. Michael Byers, a University of British Columbia professor who recently published a book called Who Owns the Arctic?, told The Canadian Press

that the only surprise in the announcement is that it provides for a five-year review of the ban. Byers said the move seems designed to show that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is protecting the environment, despite a recent decision to sanction two oil pipelines — the Trans Mountain expansion and Line 3 replacement project. “Closing the door to Arctic oil and gas helps to position himself on the climate change file by saying that there are limits in terms of the development of new oil and gas fields, therefore drawing a line in the sand from a climate change perspective,” he said. “There’s no activity taking place in the Canadian Arctic right now, so saying no doesn’t require anyone to stop.” Source: CBC News

Dr. Imam Zijad Delic Speaks on Prophet Isa (sas) at Masjid al-Salaam Burnaby

On Dec 18,Burnaby’s Masjid Al-Salaam & Education Centre hosted was packed with over 300 people Saturday night as the BCMA’s Burnaby-New Westminster-Tri-Cities Branch celebrated its 20th anniversary. Imam Zijad Delic, who was the first Imam to lead prayers in the Masjid while it was still under construction was the guest of honor, and traveled all the way from Ottawa for the event. After Imam Yahyah Momla addressed the crowd, speaking on the concept of Taiwan, Imam Delic gave a talk on the importance of Prophet Isa (AS), his example, and also touched on the importance of Canadian Muslims being good citizens. Delic, who published his first book, titled “Canadian Islam: Belonging & Loyalty” last year, spoke about his affection for the community in Burnaby, and for the fact that the community existed as a congregation before the Mosque was actually physically constructed. Imad Ali, the Branch’s former Youth Director gave a visual presentation on the history of the Muslim community in Burnaby. He highlighted The BC

Muslim Association’s attempts to build a Masjid in Burnaby from 1969-1973, and the purchase of BC’s first Muslim burial ground at Oceanview Cemetery in South Burnaby in 1976. He then focused on the formation of the first Burnaby Local Management Committee set up by the BCMA in 1994 to the establishment of the Branch and the construction and completion of the Masjid, and the Mosque’s successful programs. Outside the main hall, posters, newspaper articles and flyers from over 70 events that have been held at the Masjid over the past ten years were displayed. Daud Ismail, BCMA President also addressed the crowd, and Mohammed Shameen and Daud Ali, current Directors of the Burnaby Branch presented medals which were read out by Bob Rahiman, a former director who was instrumental in the Masjid being successfully constructed, and Tazul Ali, Chair of the Burnaby Women’s branch, to about 70 individuals who were recognized for their contribution to Burnaby’s success over the past 20 years. Special guests who were presented with a medal included Maulana Shahadat Hussain and Qari Abdul Wahab.

What do Muslims think about Jesus?

M

uslims respect and revere Je- the Hereafter, and one of those brought near During his prophetic mission Jesus per-

sus, and await his Second Coming. They consider him one of the greatest of God’s messengers to mankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as ‘Jesus’, but always adds the phrase ‘upon him be peace’. The Quran confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Quran is entitled ‘Mary’), and Mary is considered the purest woman in all creation. The Quran describes the Annunciation as follows: ‘Behold!’ the Angel said, ‘God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and

formed many miracles. The Quran tells us that he said: I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God’s leave. And I heal the blind, and the lepers and I raise the dead by God’s leave. (Quran, 3:49) Neither Muhammad nor Jesus came to change the basic doctrine of the belief in One God, brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it. In the Quran Jesus Truly, the likeness of Jesus with God is as is reported as saying that he came: the likeness of Adam. He created him of To attest the law which was before me. And dust, and then said to him, ‘Be!’ and he was. to make lawful to you part of what was for(Quran, 3:59) bidden you; I have come to you with a sign

to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and shall be of the righteous.’ She said: ‘O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said: ‘Even so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, “Be!” and it is.’ (Quran, 3:42-7) Jesus was born miraculously through the same power which had brought Adam into being without a father:

stitutes a flagrant violation under international law”. It also states that Israeli settlements are “dangerously imperiling the viability of the two-state solution” that would see an independent state of Palestine co-exist alongside Israel. The text stresses that halting settlements was “essential for salvaging the twostate solution, and calls for affirmative steps to be taken immediately to reverse the negative trends on the ground”. UN diplomats see the resolution as a final chance for council action on the Middle East before Republican Presidentelect Donald Trump succeeds Democrat Obama on January 20. Trump has signaled he would support Israel in a num-

ber of critical areas and not pressure it to engage in talks with the Palestinians. Obama’s administration, however, has been highly critical of Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. In October, the US joined the European Union, the UN and Russia in calling for a halt to the settlements in a report released by the socalled diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East. The report was to serve as the basis for reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace process which has been comatose since a US initiative collapsed in April 2014. The Quartet report said at least 570,000 Israelis were living in the settlements. Source: Al-Jazeera

from your Lord, so fear God and obey Me. (Quran, 3:5O) The Prophet Muhammad said: Whoever believes there is no god but God, alone without partner, that Muhammad is His messenger, that Jesus is the servant and messenger of God, His word breathed into Mary and a spirit emanating from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by God into Heaven. Three people hurt in shooting at Zurich Islamic centre

A man burst into a Muslim prayer hall in the Swiss city of Zurich and started shooting, wounding at least three men. A body found a few hundred metres from the scene was that of the shooter who attacked an Islamic centre, police confirmed on Tuesday. At around 5:30pm on Monday (16:30 GMT), the unidentified attacker entered the Islamic centre where several worshippers were gathered and began firing, Zurich police said in a statement. He “fired several shots at the worshippers,” police said. “Three men, aged 30, 35 and 56, were injured, some seriously. The suspect then escaped from the mosque in the direction of Central Station,” it said. Witnesses described the gunman as a man aged about 30 wearing dark clothes and a dark woollen cap, witnesses said. Police have urged witnesses who were in the area around the time of the shooting to come forward. The motive for the shooting was still unclear. About a dozen people were inside the prayer hall at the time of the attack, the ATS news agency reported, citing a number of people on site, adding a prayer service had been scheduled for 4:45pm (15:45 GMT). The worshippers were mainly from North Africa, Somalia and Eritrea, ATS reported. The body was discovered on the river bank, underneath the bridge, and had been draped with

a white sheet. Zurich police said Tuesday on Twitter that “we are working on the assumption that the dead person who was found is the culprit in the shooting at the Islamic Center in Zurich”. A number of Swiss mosques, including one near Zurich and the main one in Geneva, have, in recent months, been accused in the media of allowing or encouraging the “radicalisation” of their worshippers, especially the younger members of their congregations. Switzerland, a country of some eight million people, reportedly has some 450,000 Muslims. Source: Al-Jazeera

FAITH Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 34, Number 425:Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary (Jesus) will shortly descend amongst you people (Muslims) as a just ruler and will break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya (a tax taken from the non-Muslims, who are in the protection, of the Muslim government). Then there will be abundance of money and no-body will accept charitable gifts.

Prophet (Jesus) ISA (A.S) In Islam

By: Sadullah Khan “Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter, he is of those nearest to Allah”; [Qur’an 3:45] Belief in Prophets (May Allah’s Peace be upon all of them) slam emphasizes the universality of the institution of prophethood. According to the Qur’an, there is not a single nation in the world to which a prophet has not appeared sometime in history: “There is not a people but a warner has gone among them” [Q35:24]. And again: “For every nation there is a messenger” [Q10:47] The Qur’an mentions about 25 of the Biblical Prophets by name [Q4:163] and we are further told that there have been prophets besides those mentioned in the Qur’an: “And We sent messengers We have mentioned to thee before, and messengers We have not mentioned to thee” [Q4:164] . It is an Islamic article of Faith to believe .in all Prophets; from Adam through Abraham, Moses, Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them) [Q2:184] all Prophets were models of excellence who were commissioned to guide humankind [Q2:213]the mission of Prophets was to establish justice for all [Q57:25] that Prophets were the embodiments of Righteousness; “And Zachariah, John, Jesus and Elijah; all of these were of the most Righteous.” [Q6:85] It is an accepted fact in Islam that the struggle and legacy of the prophets (peace be upon them) serve as universal guides, excellent examples and as sources of hope and inspiration. Status of Maryam/Mary Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a prominent figure in Islam and the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an. The Qur’an upholds Mary as one of the four perfect examples of womanhood [Q66:12] . Mary is mentioned more times and more biographical information about her is contained in the Qur’an than in the entire New Testament. The birth of Jesus Christ is described in twice in the Qur’an - chapter 3 and chapter 19. Reading from the beginning of his birth, we come across the story of Mary, and the esteemed position which she occupies in the House of Islam, before the actual annunciation of the birth of Jesus is made. The Qur’anic account of Mary includes the pregnancy of her mother, Mary’s birth and the annunciations of the coming birth of Jesus: “Remember how she preserved her chastity, into whom We breathed a life from Us, and made her and her son a token for hu-

I

Last edition Al Names were

mankind” [Q21:91]. The Qur’an teaches that Mary is to be revered because she completely submitted herself to God’s will, even though it meant that her own family would accuse her of unchastity when it was discovered that she was pregnant [Q19:16-21] . The mother of Jesus (peace be upon them) is accorded highest respect and considered as among the most noble in the estimation of Allah. [Q3:33] Behold! the angels said: O Mary Allah has chosen you and purified you, chosen you above the women of all nations.” [Q3:42] The entire chapter 19 titled Maryam/Mary in the Qur’an and another (chapter 3) is titled Al-’Imran after the family of Mary. Jesus /’Isa referred to 9 times in the Qur’an as ‘Isa and 16 times as ‘Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary) Mary is considered chaste, virtuous, receiver of God’s spirit, a testimony to the veracity of God’s message and piously obedient [Q66:11] Uniqueness of Jesus (pbuh)

/ ibne Maryam, eminent in this world and the next wajihan fid-dunya wal-aakhirah, and most unique of all... the Messiah / masih. Miracles -The Qur’an speaks of Jesus possessing intellect and eloquence in childhood [Q19:30] and documents some of Jesus’ miracles, including curing the sick, restoring the sight of the blind and reviving the dead, with God’s permission [Q5:110] . The Qur’an specifically mentions two miracles which the Bible does not contain; 1. The Qur’an records Jesus as an infant verbally defending Mary’s innocence [Q19:2735]. In Surah 19:27-34, Jesus speaks from the cradle to state his mission. Jesus said, “I am indeed a servant of Allah Who has given me revelation and made me a prophet.” 2. The Qur’an [Q5:110] also reports that Jesus formed a bird out of clay, and blew into it, and it came to life and flew away. This last miracle is not recorded in the canonical New Testament but does appear in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas.

Virgin birth -The Qur’an gives an account of the birth of Jesus in chapter 3. Mary is described as being a virgin, chosen by God, and considered with great honor. “Behold! the angels said: O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary.” [Q3:45] . Verse 47 relates the response of and to Mary, “She said: O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me? He said: ‘Even so: Allah creates what He wills: When He has decreed a plan, He merely says to it, Be,’ and it is ” The Qur’an thus affirms and Muslims believe that Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. The birth is seen as a sign (ayah) of Allah’s power and as a miraculous event. And Muslims have a high regard also for Mary. However, the Qur’an presents Jesus as the son of Mary and not as the Son of God, a significant point particularly emphasized. Like Adam (pbuh) -Though the unique birth of Jesus with one parent is no indication of divinity just as Adam’s creation was without any parentage [Q3:59] . Messiah -It is obvious that Jesus holds an exalted place within Islam. Some of the honorable epithets of Jesus (pbuh) mentioned in the Qur’an are ... prophet / nabi, messenger of God / rasul, of the Righteous / min-as-salihin, word of Allah / kalimatu-Llah), spirit from God / ruhun mina’ Llah, positive sign/symbol for humanity / aayatun lin- naas, mercy from God / rahmatan minna, the son of Mary

It must be remembered that all miracles / mu’jizah performed by prophets (pbuh) are done through the agency of the prophets but by the power and authority of God. Jesus’ miracles too are considered basically in the line of his being a prophet and in God’s enabling and permitting him to do so. The Qur’an thus stresses the fact that the miracles of Jesus were performed by the permission and power of God [Q5:110] . No Easter Commemoration Millions of Christians commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus (pbuh), and this begs the question that if Jesus is important to Muslims, why do Muslims then not commemorate Easter. Though Muslims accept Jesus (pbuh) as a great prophet, revere his exemplary mother Mary, and believe that Jesus is the Messiah; Muslims do not accept the major concepts that are central to the commemoration of the Easter weekend. Among these concepts are... Divine Incarnation and Trinity [Q4:171] [Q112:1-4] -Allah is ONE in an absolute sense, no one shares in His Lordship nor in His divinity; nothing is equal or comparable to God. This is in keeping with the command, “and Jesus answered him, the first of all the commandment is, Hear, O Israel; The LORD our God is One LORD.” [Mark 12:29]. In promoting a great human such as Jesus (pbuh) to divinity, does not elevate Jesus as much as it minimizes the concept of

Names Of A l l a h (SWT) & Mohammad (PBUH)

Wajid name of Allah(swt)

Al Muqsidu Mohammad(saw) name.

the divine; is not making the finite infinite as much as making the perfect imperfect; not an elevation of Jesus, but rather a devaluation of the Divine. Crucifixion -Christ, according to Muslim belief, did NOT die on a cross [Q4:157] but was rather elevated by Allah and saved from being killed [Q4:158]. Resurrection -Not having died, Jesus could NOT have been resurrected [Q4:156]. Inherited Sinfulness [Q2:285] -Babies are born pure and no one is born bearing the sin of any one and no one bears the burden of another [Q17:15] . Redemption / Atonement -Muslims do not believe in the doctrine of OriginalSin, so there is no theological need for the all-atoning sacrifice of Jesus through his crucifixion and resurrection. Muslims further believe that each person will be held accountable before God for his/her own actions and thus responsible for their own salvation. Therefore, we will not be able to rely upon anyone else, not even Jesus or Muhammad, to save us from our sins. Sins are those acts we deliberately incur by our choice of actions, we are responsible and hence personally accountable. In Islam there is no notion of redemption for one’s sin by another. Each one is accountable for himself/herself [Q99:7-8] and for each person according to his/her personal striving [Q2:286] . Jesus is Jesus denied by some as a fictional character, accused of being an illegitimate child by some, misconceived as divine by many; considered as a Prophet and Messiah in Islam. People do have differing perspectives on Jesus’ life and teachings, but his spiritual legacy, as a righteous and principled guide, his mission as a Prince of Peace offers an alternative opportunity for people of faith to recognize their shared religious heritage. Allah bears testimony to the truthfulness of Jesus; his mission, character, status and his very being. “Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: a statement of truth, about which people dispute.” [Q19:34]. All sincere ones would do well to reflect on the verse in the Quran reaffirming Islam’s eternal message of spiritual unity: “Say: ‘We believe in God and the revelation given to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and message given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to all Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.” [Q2:136]

10 Grand Mawlid Al-Nabi (saw) Celebrated by Hub-e-Rasul Canada Rabi ul Awwal 23. 1438 December 23, 2016

Dec 10, The Naqshbandia Islamic Center of Vancouver celebrated their annual Jashn-e-Eid Mawlid Al-Nabi under the guidance and leadership of Mawlana Shaykh Sayed Nurjan Mirahamadi (Damat Barakatuhum Ul Aliya). A night full of Naats, Nasheeds, Zikr and soulful speeches of Mashaikh Karam. Hub-E-Rasul conference is rising as the biggest Mawlid conference of west coast where all community comes together to celebrate the love of Holy Prophet Naqshbandia center is very thankful for all community leaders who participated and collaboratively made this program a success. The night began with Mawlana Shaykh Sayed Nurjan leading the flag march where hundreds of people including kids dressed up in beautiful white outfit decorated with badges and head bands carrying flags of all size waving and reciting durood o salam marched in the center of hall. Program started with recitation of Holy Quran followed by Naqshbandia Ensemble reciting salawats and Nasheeds praising upon Sayedna Muhammad . The key presentation of night included an Urdu Naat recited by International, World Class, Japanese Opera singer, who recently embraced Islam at the hands of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahamdi and has been practicing Urdu Naat Shareef for Mawlid program. Without having any previous knowl-

edge of Islam, she came with great love for Holy prophet and is taking Islamic training at Naqshbandia Islamic center. Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan lead the khatme Khawjgan, an ancient way of Mashaikh karam of Naqshbandi tareeqa for zikr followed by a soulful speech where Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan emphasized on loving Prophet Muhammad more than we love ourselves to fulfilling our deen according to hadees of Holy Prophet . Mawlana said that Nabi is Imam ul Mubeen and he is the living Kitab as when Allah az wajal mention Kitab in Quran, he is clearly referring to Sayedena Muhammad as Holy Quran was not available in life time of Sayedna Muhammad in the form of a book. So Allah saying al Kitab and Al Imam Al Mubeen is directly referring to Sayedna Muhammad . So true understand of Islam is to follow the living Quran and the footsteps of holy Prophet and love him the way Sahabah loved him. Mawlana said it is very important to celebrate these nights and be happy and share the happiness so other communities can see us as peace loving and warm hearted community. Mawlana Abdul Lateef Naumani who equally participates in all Hub-E-Rasul conferences also gave a heart touching bayan. He call upon all community to be united and take a stand for mawlid Al-Nabi and celebrate the event with

happiness. Mawlana Naumani narrated incidents of love of Shaba Karam for Sayedna Muhammad emphasizing the tremendous amount of knowledge that Allah Az wa jal gave to Sayedna Muhammad . Evening ended with Ziarat of Holy reclics including Muae Mubarak of Sayedna Muhammad , cloth of holy Turban of Imam Hussain (Alehe Assalam), The Shroud of Roza Shareef and Holy Kabba. Final Dua was made after darood o salam for safety and protection of everyone participating. A delicious dinner was served to hundreds of people with deserts and cake. This year event is another huge success to spread the peaceful message of Islam of love, compassion and peace. The event was attended by hundreds of people from lower mainland. Guests also came from Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Seattle, San Francisco and many other cities. Once again Naqshbandi Islamic Center is very thankful for everyone who supported and participated. Let’s make an intention to do even bigger program next year and bring the whole community under the blessings of Him who is mercy to mankind by raising His flag and showing our love for Him. If you would like to donate and be a supporter of these beautiful programs, please contact Naqshbandi Islamic Center of Vancouver at 604-558-4455.

The AICP director gave a speech stressing on the consistent approach of moderation of the association that does not vary by politics, and does not fluctuate with instability like the wind, rather its approach is the fundamentals of our tolerant religion commanded by Allah; while warning against exploitation, misguidance and extremist ideologies in the name of religion. MLA Harry Bains presented award of appreciation to AICP for its en-

deavor in reflecting the positive image of Islam and Muslims. Imams of AICP center, addressed the crowd in heartening Arabic and English speeches about our great beloved Muhammad who came as a mercy to the creations. Shaykh Kamal stressed on following the real teachings of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. We have to stick to the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama^ah, clearing Allah from resembling his creations, and to love the prophet as he deserves. The children of al-Hidayah and TIES school drew a long round of applause from the BC officials and the crowd after a wonderful chant about Islam and Prophet Muhammad. A video was played about AICP center in New Westminster and its various activities in serving the community. Food and sweets were served to the audience for the love of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects held this celebration under the banner of ‘Muhammad the guide from darkness to light’ sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam . One more time it succeeded in translating that devotion into actions uniting the huge number of Muslims in this occasion and celebration.

A special speaker from Toronto and local associations were also invited in this event along with the Muslim community. Br. Aseem Khan was the master of ceremony of this event. First he recited the verses of Quran, after that Mr. Khan invited local Naat Khawans to recite Naats in their beautiful voices included Br. Mohammed Muzammil, Br. Imran Shehzad Br, Abdur Rasool Salis. Local dynamic Urdu speaker Maulana A. Latif Naumani, Imam and Khateeb of Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah recited the relevant Quranic Suras and narrated few Haidths. Maulana Naumani delivered a stunning bayan in Urdu in which he focused on the birth of Prophet Mohammad(SAW) and love with Allah and his messenger Mohammad(pbuh). Next speaker was Imam and Khateeb of Fiji Islamic Centre Qari o Hafiz Imran Raza. He focused of his speech at 93. Sura Ad Dhuha (The Morning Light) [1-3] By the day, full of light, and the night when it falls peacefully,

your Lord has not forsaken you (O Prophet), nor is He displeased. [4-5] And surely the later period is better for you than the earlier period, and soon your Lord shall give you so much that you shall be well pleased. [611 Did He not find you an orphan and then he sheltered you? And He found you unaware of the Way, then He guided you, and He found you poor, then He enriched you. Therefore, do. not be harsh to the orphan, and do not scold the beggar, and do proclaim the bounty of your lord. He said that all Muslims should try to understand the respect of Mohammad(pbuh) and should be true followers by practicing. Mr Khan introduced the special guest speaker Imam and Khateeb Aiyub Ashrafi (Faizan e raza Centre Toronto) at stage to address at

this spiritual gathering. Imam Ashrafi delivered a powerful speech on Seeret-un-Nabi of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) in the light of Quran and Sunnah. Aysha Siddiqa(R.A) and Abu Bakar Siddique (R.A) and many others. He said Allah’s gift of mercy and kindness for us and the mankind. He asked where our youth is going today? Is it because their parents are not giving them proper attention and not familiarizing them with Islamic teachings. He stressed the audience to hold the rope of Allah(swt) and obey

the teachings of Prophet as per sunnah and said don’t miss any prayer intentionally in your daily life, don’t tell a lie and become a practice Muslim and serve Canada as a true Muslim with your Islamic values. Dawat e Islami BC Celebrates the Birth of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

On Dec 16, Dawat e Islami BC celebrated the holy Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Birthday at Shannon Hall in South Surrey. The program was started with the recitation of Quran by Muhammad Amin Attari. After that, a beautiful Naat session was held by local Naat Khawans Br. Mohammad Abid and Br. Amir Attari. Maulana Aabid Attari was the master of ceremony. After describing purpose of this spiritual gathering, he invited guest speaker Br. Umair Attari (from Calgary) to spread the message of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (saw). Br. Umair Attari first recited few Naats and then recited the verses of Quran and gave Haidth references. He said that till this day some Muslims are confused whether we should celebrate Milad or not. As per Haidth “ Abu Qatada al-Ansari narrates in Sahih Muslim, Kitab as-siyam, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the fast of Monday, and he answered: “That is the day that I was born and that is the day I received the prophethood.” Jamat e Ahel Sunnah celebrate Milad not only for Naats Khawani but also to narrate the Seerat un Nabi(saw) and obey the teachings of Islam and promote practice of Prophet’s Sunnah in our daily life. He said that we should teach our chil-

dren three important things as well as giving other education. Those three things are: Love with Prophet, Love with Ahil e Bait and teaching of Quran and Sunnah . Br. Umair said that after the death of Prophet Mohammad son Ibrahim death, He was sad, and Allah (swt) sent Surat Ash-Shar (Ayats 1-8)”.... And raised high for you your repute,For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease,- Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.” He also quoted verses from Sura Anfaal as references in his speech. He emphasised on importance of prayer for every believer, why we celebrate Prophet Birth, not only for reciting Naat and Zikar but to become a practising Muslim, and this will not happen unless we obey as per teachings of Muhammad (pbuh), and this is right way to show the true love with our Muhammad (saw). After the Urdu speech by Br. Umair Attari, Maulana Aabid Attari from Vancouver summarised in English. He emphasised that for all Muslims, connection with Allah(swt) and love for His beloved Prophet Muhammad(saw) are the successful keys of our daily life. Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than

his father, his children and all mankind.” [Bukha- many times in a day. ri] So everyone should pray that our love with be- At the end, special guest Maulana Abdul Lateef loved Muhammad(saw) will increase day by day Naumani, Imam and Khateeb of Jamia Masjid and do Zikr and send Daorod on Him(PBUH) Aulia Allah Surrey made Duaa at this occasion.

POLITICS 2016 Year in Review: Sticking to BC Liberal game plan yields balanced budget, debt reduction, international environmental recognition

By Christy Clark As premier, my job is to ensure every action taken by government reflects the core values that built this province: create more opportunity, protect this magnificent place for future generations and take care of the people we love. Every year brings its own unique challenges, but despite economic uncertainty across Canada and around the world, in 2016, our plan to put British Columbians first is returning dividends. It started with our fourth consecutive balanced budget with our fifth coming in February. We’re on track to eliminate our operating debt for the first time since 1975. Instead of paying interest on borrowed money, we have more to invest in things like transit infrastructure (including the new Evergreen Extension that opened on December 2), health care, education and skills training without going into deficit, and with the lowest middle-class taxes in Canada. Because we’ve stuck to the BC Jobs Plan to attract investment and expand trade to create jobs, we’re leading Canada like never before: No. 1 in job creation in Canada, the lowest unemployment and, for the first time in 50 years, first in economic growth. Along with sticking to our plan, hard-working British Columbians have

made these accomplishments possible. But the real point is what it allows us to do. For example, the ability to take action on housing affordability, with $855 million for almost 5,000 new units across B.C., an additional tax on international residential homebuyers to correct a distorted market, and investments to ensure the dream of home ownership is within reach of the middle class. To help families, we made record investments to place more children in care in permanent adoptive homes, and started the Single Parent Employment Initiative, a program that helps parents get off social assistance by paying for their child care, tuition and transportation while they are taking classes or getting trained for a new job – and keeps their social assistance cheques coming. In just over a year, 4,000 British Columbians have taken us up on our offer. In both cases, we made changes to make sure people have every opportunity to succeed. Because when people succeed, they lift others up with them. With global uncertainty posing a risk to our economy, we have to stick to our plan to grow jobs and get to yes on economic development responsibly. That means sticking to our principles – balancing environmental protection with responsible, sus-

By John Horgan, leader, B.C. New Democrats For many of us 2016 was a difficult year, a year made more difficult by the Christy Clark government. More than half of B.C. workers are living paycheck to paycheck. One in five children are living in poverty. Over the last five years, since Christy Clark became premier, the average British Columbian is paying up to $1000 more in hidden taxes like higher hydro rates, increased medical service premiums and more expensive ICBC car insurance. The cost of rent has skyrocketed and the price of homes are out of reach for young buyers. So it’s no wonder that over the last five years the percentage of British Columbians giving to charity has declined from 74 per cent to 59 per cent. People simply have less in their pockets to give. British Columbia under Christy Clark has become a hard place for families to survive, let alone thrive.

Families aren’t just suffering economically. The services they need and depend on have been gutted by the Christy Clark government. Just months ago the Supreme Court of Canada, the highest court in the land, revealed that Christy Clark had illegally ripped up contracts with B.C. teachers that protected children from overcrowded classrooms without the supports they need to learn. An entire generation of B.C. children has suffered because of Christy Clark’s attacks on public education. The result is that children are going to school in overcrowded classrooms, learning in portables, or even going to school in shifts. And despite promising to fix the schools most in danger of collapsing in a major earthquake before the last election, Christy Clark hasn’t delivered. Next election she’ll be promising the same thing again. Mean-

tainable economic development. In 2016, we received significant international recognition for our work on environmental protection and climate action. The landmark Great Bear Rainforest agreement was included in the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy initiative, and the United Nations honoured B.C. for our revenueneutral carbon tax, holding us up as an example for the world. B.C. continues to lead with our climate action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 megatonnes a year by 2050. Part of that is pursuing clean electricity. B.C.’s electricity is currently 98% clean, but with investments like Site C, we’re working toward 100%. Clean electricity isn’t just good for the planet – it’s a competitive advantage. It helped land the investment decision for our first liquefied natural gas export facility, Woodfibre LNG. Along with other facilities exporting B.C.’s clean natural gas, Woodfibre will help reduce global emissions as growing (and polluting) Asian economies switch from dirty fossil fuels like coal. It’s a bigger potential reduction in global emissions than shutting down our entire province – every factory, house and school. Sticking to our principles means not wavering or while, our children are spending their days in un unsafe buildings. Christy Clark simply has the wrong priorities. She is doubling spending on self-promoting and partisan advertisements – paid for by you and by me, at a time when youth in mental health crisis are waiting up to two years to access mental health services. Christy Clark promised every British Columbian would have a family doctor by 2015, but hundreds of thousands of B.C. families are still forced to rely on walk-in clinics to access basic and family medicine. Emergency rooms are often full. Ambulances are often slow to arrive. Too many people are waiting for months and months for hip surgeries and knee surgeries that are key to their mobility and quality of life. Our seniors’ care has been cut to the bone. Many families are struggling to keep their elders at home because they don’t know how they will be treated

changing our minds on things like our five conditions on heavy oil pipelines. Late this year, the Trudeau government approved Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. This only happened after five years of progress on our five conditions, and the largest federal commitment in history to answer B.C.’s non-negotiable demand for world-leading marine spill prevention and response with the Oceans Protection Plan. 2017 brings with it a provincial election. I hope everyone will find time to consider the issues and exercise their right to vote – because if there’s one lesson from the U.S. presidential election, it’s that every vote matters. There’s never been a better time to call yourself a British Columbian. My job in 2017 will be to continue to make sure our plan is working, to keep B.C. strong and put British Columbians first. • in the government funded homes that are all most families can afford. The fact is, Christy Clark simply isn’t working for British Columbians. She’s working for big party donors who pay her second, $50,000 salary, on top of the $192,000 salary she takes from taxpayers. No wonder she doesn’t want to ban big money from politics. Because, it’s big money for Christy Clark and her friends. I believe politics is about making our province better. I want to solve the problems we face, together. I hope you will join me in 2017 in the fight to make B.C. better.

This is the 5th year in conflict for the Syrian Refugees

U.S. HANDS OFF SYRIA ! S

yria is at the centre of one of the world’s most critical humanitarian emergencies. Syria is now besieged by internal conflict that has uprooted millions of families. An estimated 3.2 million people fled the country and have taken refuge in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt. One average, one family flees Syria every minute. A U.N.-backed report from the UNRWA suggests that life expectancy due to the civil war has been decreased by 20 years since 2011. Syria is now the world’s largest source of refugees. 5 years is a long time and has been extremely challenging for the people of Syria. Life shouldn’t be a horror movie.

The Syrian government has since then refused efforts to negotiate with what it describes as armed terrorist groups. The war is being fought by several factions: the Syrian Government and its various supporters, a loose alliance of Sunni Arab rebel groups (including the Free Syrian Army), the majority Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces, Salafi jihadist groups (including al-Nusra Front) who often co-operate with the Sunni rebels, and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The factions receive substantial support from foreign actors, leading many to label the conflict a proxy war waged by both regional and global powers. Syrian opposition groups formed the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and seized control of the area surrounding Aleppo and parts of southern Syria. Over time, factions of the Syrian opposition split from their original moderate

position to pursue an Islamist vision for Syria, as al-Nusra Front and ISIL. In the north, Syrian government forces largely withdrew to fight the FSA, allowing the Kurdish YPG to move in and proclaim de facto autonomy. In 2015 the YPG joined forces with Arab, Assyrian, Armenian and some Turkmen groups, forming the Syrian Democratic Forces, while most Turkmen groups remained with the FSA. International organizations have accused the Syrian government, ISIL and other opposition forces of severe human rights violations and of many massacres The conflict has caused a refugee crisis. On 1 February 2016,a formal start of the mediated Geneva Syria peace talks was announced by the United Nations but fighting continues.Source: en.wikipedia.org

HEALTH

THE 4 TEMPERAMENTS By: Nada Adam t’s important to have a broader understanding about this Original Medicine before I share with you the details and important religious proofs for it. Here’s a question for you to ponder…what constitutes good health? Many may answer feeling good or perhaps not feeling sick, weak, no pain… however; a person may have disease developing in their body but because they are not in tune to their bodily symptoms may still feel good in their opinion. Likewise, a person not feeling sick with a cold or flu doesn’t necessarily mean they are feeling motivated, rejuvenated, on purpose and sleeping well…they may have become accustomed to their day-in/day-out routine without questioning their circumstances. So dear brothers and sisters, the absence of pain doesn’t always mean good health indicating you are free from disease. “When all the Natural Factors in the human body are working together in a balanced, harmonious manner, there is health and homeostasis. However, when they aren’t working together properly, there is dysfunction and disease. Herbal medicine is built based on the four humors: heat, cold, humidity and dryness. The balance/ moderation of these temperaments is the cause for good health and the disbalance and/or exiting from the state of balance/moderation is the cause of illness.” Below is an illustration of the 4 Humoral Temperaments including its correlated Season: These 4 Humours mix together and produce 4 Temperaments that are found in all human beings in varying degrees and ratios. (More detail in the next issue) SPRING:Hot-Moist (Blood Temperament),

I

Blood rises to the surface of our bodies lively and exuberantly. SUMMER:Hot-Dry (Yellow Bile Temperament), heat evaporates the remaining moisture, making the weather Hot/Dry AUTUMN:Cold-Dry (Black Bile Temperament), the weather cools off but the dryness remains, making Fall Cold and Dry. WINTER:Cold/Wet (Phlegmatic Temperament), weather produces excessive Phlegm, causing: colds, coughs and lung congestion. Then, as Cold increases, bringing us back into Winter, making Winter again Cold and Wet. The wheel has come full circle. STAGES OF LIFE TEMPERAMENT Metaphoric analogies can be drawn between the seasons of the year and the stages of life, which have corresponding affinities to humoral temperament. Youth:Youthful bodies are Warm, Moist, and Sanguine Temperament are full of good, exuberant blood, and are constantly growing. Adulthood:Adults are typically Hot, Dry and Choleric temperament, this stage of life is when individuals are at their peak, full throttle years of life’s zenith, with lots of Choleric drive and ambition. Maturity| Middle Age: Cold, Wet and Phlegmatic in temperament. At this stage, the light and heat of the sun have begun to wane and so has the Life Force within us. Old Age: Cold, Dry and Melancholy temperament. The light and heat of the sun has become at their lowest ebb and so has the Life Force in our bodies; a realization of the transition of life dawns. Finally, all light and life are extinguished. Understanding The 4 Basic Qualities The primary, active polarity of Hot / Cold is the easiest to understand, and refers to the relative level

of energy or activity present in a system or entity. * Hot denotes a high level of energy or activity. Hot activates, excites, expands, disperses, moves and circulates. *Cold denotes a low level of energy or activity. Cold slows down, sedates, contracts, congeals and obstructs. The secondary, passive polarity of Dry / Wet is a bit more complex, and has both literal and figurative interpretations. Temperament And The 4 Basic Qualities Humoral Medicine is based on the concept of Temperament and is defined as the prevailing balance or makeup of qualities and attributes within a substance, system or entity. Humoral Medicine measures conditions of temperament primarily in terms of the Four Basic Qualities. There are 8 possible conditions of temperament, 4 of them simple and 4 compounds. And there’s a 9th, called Balanced or Equable Temperament. The 4 simple conditions of temperament each involve only 1 of the Four Basic Qualities, as follows: Hot-Hotter than normal, but neither Wetter nor Dryer Cold-Colder than normal, but neither Wetter nor Dryer Dry-Dryer than normal, but neither Hotter nor Colder Wet-Wetter than normal, but neither Hotter nor Colder The 4 compound conditions of temperament each involve 2 of the Four Basic Qualities, as follows: Hot and Dry-Both Hotter and Dryer than normal Hot and Wet-Both Hotter and Wetter than normal Cold and Dry-Both Colder and Dryer than normal Cold and Wet-Both Colder and Wetter than normal Conditions of both Hot and Cold can’t exist simultaneously, since these two qualities are po polar opposites. For the same reason, neither can conditions of Dry and Wet coexist. Each of the 4 compound temperaments has associations with a certain element, humor and temperament, or constitutional type. WORKING WITH THE 4 BASIC QUALITIES Because the Four Basic Qualities aren’t static, but rather always changing, we can work with them. Here are a few simple, basic rules for working with the 4 Basic Qualities: * Like increases like. If we wish to increase a certain quality in the organism, we use medi medicines and treatments that have that quality. * Opposites balance. If we wish to bring an excessive or aggravated quality back into balance, we use medicines and treatments that have its opposite yet complementary quality. * Heat produces dryness. Moderate amounts of heat; applied over a short period of time will only increase heat and dissipate excessive cold. Intense levels of heat applied over a long period of time will also evaporate moisture, producing dryness. * Cold condenses moisture. Moderate amounts of cold applied over a short period of time will only cool down the body and disperse excessive heat. Intense cold applied over a long period of time will also condense moisture, producing wetness. (To be continued next issue…) Question: Why should I try Humoral Medicine? Answer: As our population ages, many more of our loved ones will likely experience chronic degenerative diseases, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, benign prostatic hyperplasia, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The reality is modern medicine has only been successful in treating symptoms (not curing the cause of illness) of acute illnesses and injuries, and modern treatments can be expensive and have severe side effects. My father recently asked a Pharmacist for medicine without side effects, and to which he heard, “There are no drugs on the market without negative side effects.” He replied, “Are you trying to kill the people?” So if you’re taking for example 2-5 prescription drugs for various symptoms, you need to know each drug has a side effect that is already interacting in your body i.e. doing additional damage in your body. Compare that with authentic, modernized and

time-tested techniques of treating a patient’s humoral temperament and you will find this genuine medicine is gentler, natural, bioavailable, easily accessible, highly effective, non-invasive and much more cost efficient (though not covered by Medical Services Plan)… Humoral Medical treatment is simple: it involves dietary change, lifestyle advice and herbal prescriptions sourced from Nature. God created herbal medicine to be ingested by the human body to cure ailments vs. manufactured drugs/chemicals that are not biologically accepted by any human body and designed to give you (known and unknown) multiple side effects that will make you sicker! Is temporary relief really worth getting sicker? Did you know? The number 3 cause of death after heart disease and cancer is pharmaceutical drug interactions. This is because drug companies test only individual drug interactions but not multiple drug interactions when combined together. When your MD prescribes for you 2 or more drugs, even your MD and the FDA don’t know the side effects of those 2 drugs together…now imagine

adding another and yet another drug to that combination?! The dangerous side effects increase with each additional drug added to your daily routine. For example: migraine drugs, their side effect - harms the liver, reduces libido/ sexual function and causes more headaches …Now imagine compounding the problem by taking a pain killer drug on top that with additional side effects harming the liver and kidneys too. Next time you pop 2 or more pharmaceutical drugs…ask yourself, what would I rather be doing? Curing my ailment(s) or continue taking these drugs that God knows how much are harming me? Thank you to all who reached out to me to ask your questions. I was delighted to read your messages! The article today should answer a lot of your questions. angladesh), officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Burma (Myanmar) to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south. Together with the Indian state of West Bengal, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The name Bangladesh means "Country of Bengal" in the official Bengali language. The borders of present-day Bangladesh were established with the partition of Bengal and India in 1947, when the region became the eastern wing of the newly formed Pakistan. However, it was separated from the western wing by 1,600 km (994 mi) across India. After independence the new state endured famines, natural disasters and widespread poverty, as well as political turmoil and military coups. The restoration of democracy in 1991 has been followed by relative calm and economic progress. Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country and is among the most densely populated countries in the world with a high poverty rate. However, per-capita (inflation-adjusted) The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies. Dhaka, the capital, and other urban centers have been the driving force behind this growth. Geographically, the country straddles the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and is subject to annual monsoon floods and cyclones.

How to Teach Time Management Skills to Teens?

A

s teens become more independent, they need time management skills so they can complete their responsibilities on time. Your teen’s future boss or college professors aren’t likely to accept late work--or the excuses that accompany delayed projects. Teens who don’t learn time management skills are at risk of becoming lifelong procrastinators. They may also struggle to manage stress and might have difficulty in relationships if they’re chronically irresponsible. That’s why it’s important to start teaching your teen how to manage his time wisely, without you nagging or nudging him along. Benefits of Time Management Skills High school can be very busy. But the adult world can be even busier. So it’s important to start teaching your teen how to manage his time now. He’ll enjoy immediate benefits such as: •Reduced anxiety when projects are due in school or test dates are approaching. •Increased responsibility and independence. •Better decision-making skills. •More time for family and friends. •Better performance at work and school. •More opportunities to relax and unwind. Steps Parents Can Take To Teach Time Management Skills Teens usually have fairly structured schedules. Their school day and their after school activities are planned out for them. As a result, many of them don’t learn how to manage their time wisely. Here are some steps you can take to teach your teen essential time management skills: Model good time management habits. If you’re

always running late or you miss a lot of deadlines, your teen will follow suit. Practice managing your own time wisely and show your teen that you can accomplish the most important tasks in any given day. Give your teen time management tools. Whether it’s a planner that your teen writes everything in or an app that manages your teen’s schedule, help your teen find the tools that will work best for him. Talk about the importance of creating a schedule and using lists to prioritize his time wisely. Encourage your teen to fill a schedule. Your teen’s time may easily get taken up with video games or social media if he’s not careful. Teach him to schedule his day so he can set aside time for chores, homework, and other responsibilities. Encourage him to schedule free time as well, so time doesn’t idly pass without feeling like he hasn’t done anything fun. Help your teen prioritize activities. It’s common for teens to have conflicts in their schedules. A basketball game, birthday party, and church activity may all coincide. Talk to your teen about how to prioritize activities, based on his values and commitments. Encourage your teenager to develop routines. Encourage your teen to establish healthy habits, like doing his chores right after school. Once he gets into the routine of doing things in a certain order, he won’t have to waste time thinking about what to do next. Avoid nagging. It can be tempting to nag your teen or offer repeat reminders. But, telling your teen to do his homework or his chores over and over again, reduces his responsibility. Set rules about your expectations and follow through with consequences when necessary. Then, your teen will learn to manage his time better in the future. Encourage your teen to practice time management skills. There will definitely be times that she’s going to miscalculate how long a project will take or days when she forgets a deadline. Help her learn from those mistakes, and remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

The government is a parliamentary democracy. Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the OIC, SAARC, BIMSTEC, and the D-8. As the World Bank notes in its July 2005 Country Brief, the country has made significant progress in human development in the areas of literacy, gender parity in schooling and reduction of population growth. However, Bangladesh continues to face a number of major challenges, including widespread political and bureaucratic corruption, economic competition relative to the world and an increasing danger of hydrologic shocks brought on by ecological vulnerability to climate change. Exports of textiles, clothing, and ready-made garments (RMG) accounted for 77% of Bangladesh’s total merchandise exports in 2002. By 2005 the ready-made garments (RMG) industry was the only multibillion-dollar manufacturing and export industry in Bangladesh, accounting for 75 per cent of the country’s earnings in that year.Bangladesh’s export trade is now dominated by the ready-made garments (RMG) industry. Exports in Bangladesh increased to 218.38 BDT Billion in August from 182.40 BDT Billion in July of 2016. Exports in Bangladesh averaged 37.04 BDT Billion from 1972 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 218.38 BDT Billion in August of 2016 and a record low of 0.05 BDT Billion in February of 1972.

New Year’s Resolution!

By: Asma Shums Mortgage Broker hat is your new year’s resolution?! This is a question asked by people to each other as soon as new year is in horizon. Some are so enthusiastic about it that they have already made the list. It always reminds one a race where it starts with lots of expectations some give up before starting, some after a while, only few last till the end. At least we try that is good sign, life demands more than efforts. Let us look at some resolutions 1)“I will exercise daily and regulary” (means, “I know I should should exercise but I am lazy”) 2)“I will get up early and make a schedule and stick to it” (means, “I know my attitude is whatever but I know I must prioritize things”) 3)“I will honour my commitments”(means, “I change my plans with whatever suits me but I know I should honour promises”) 4)“I will not backbite”(means, “I love to backbite and gossip about people, it is very entertaining and I know it is wrong”) 5)“I will keep my room and house tidy” (means, “I am careless and I am lazy”) 6)“I will respect and honour other peoples opinions”(means, “I do not care about others and I know I am mean but who cares”) 7)“I will be more considerate to family & friends”(means, “I know I take people for granted”) The list goes on and on...

W

When we check our new years resolution list, it shows clearly that we are aware of our weak points, shortcomings in our nature and we have known and experienced it enough to realize them. But we are still not making an effort on improving ourselves. Bull’s Eye Effort with big “A ”. What we need in our life is a sincere effort. The very step is to be sincere. We are good, god-fearing, kind, honest individual. We have good noble thoughts, good intentions. We all have a very good person inside us. Then why does the bad man come out? When we behave badly or do something hurtful that Mr. Good inside us definitely tells us in his tiny voice, sometimes it even screams but we never listen.... New Resolution... So friends, let us make this resolution that we will make an effort from morning till night, day after day, we will ourselves take account of our day at the end, what did we do, what we didn’t do and how can we improve as a Muslim. Play, pause, restart We will be awake, think and act. Let us try this at least for January then automatically we will be programmed. What needs to be done is needed to be done, period. We are not snowman. We are very alive, living and breathing, feeling. So do others. So let us live each minute as it comes properly, future moments will be taken care of automatically. Let us spend at least some time with that wonderful person, think and plan.

Importance of Self-Respect

By: Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor elf-respect is crucial to self-care because it protects you from settling for less when you deserve the best. This is toxic to how you view yourself and how you allow others to treat you, your values and your boundaries. If you allow others to trample over your expectations constantly, you’re debasing your worth and your self-esteem. You might be afraid that if you have high standards for yourself, people might perceive you as a high-maintenance person and even abandon you in the process. In fact, it’s probably a good thing that they do that and reveal that earlier during your important journey. At the end of the day, your opinion of yourself and what you deserve is all that truly matters to you in your life. Having high standards for yourself, your career and relationships protects you in the long-run. Think of some things that fall below your standards as bad experiences. You’re not getting what you need and want out of it, but the person on the other side is. It’s not worth the time and your energy if someone else is benefiting from the positive return. Life is too short to waste your energy by allocating resources into goals that are not truly your own. Caring for ourselves means remaining authentic and recognizing our true passion. Don’t be pressured into picking a certain career path just because society says it’s the right one for you, don’t always settle for jobs just because they’ll pay the rent, don’t pursue a major just because of its financial rewards unless it’s something that really interests you.

S

Sometimes, you will have to do what you have to do in order to survive - but be sure you’re still looking for ways to improve yourself and progress to something better and something that represents your true self. Setting aside time to pursue your dreams is important because these are things no one can take away from you. You own the right to all your dreams and the ability to make them come true. At the end, it’s all about you - about your uniqueness - about your dreams! The key is to still be practical, but also to be passionate. You were not meant to live this life doing just what is required to survive, you were meant to live life valuing your dreams. Don’t be afraid of failure, because failure is a learning experience that will strengthen you and prepare you to do better in the future. Would you rather sit around and live in the regret of not knowing what would’ve happened if you had tried or would you rather lead an exciting life by taking on risks and challenges that will ultimately lead you towards reaching your dreams. It’s never late to start Living Your Dreams! For more information: shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Parenting: Tips to tempt the picky eater

Y

ou know what really annoys me? It’s when you’ve made the most perfect dish for your little one and they just look at it and say no. It doesn’t matter a bit if you’ve spent hours carefully boiling, mincing and portioning out proteins, vegetables and grains. It doesn’t concern them that they were served a culinary masterpiece with a unicorn sprouting rainbows out of it. No siree, nope, no way, never. When it comes to food, a no is non-negotiable in toddler world. If they don’t like it, they’ll give it that cursory glance and make that face. You know the one — the one which explains why Shaken Baby Syndrome is one of the leading causes of death for infants and toddlers! Babies tend to eat what they want and when they want it. So even if you wrangle out another culinary masterpiece with some modicum of health and nutrition, don’t fret if your ungrateful little Satan … I mean little bundle of joy and cherubic beauty ... does it again. I don’t know about you but on some days, my little ones just lap

it up with a toothy grin, or in some cases, a gummy grin. When they look at you with some gratitude, you are often left wondering if they are just buttering you up for something even more sinister to eat (like processed nuggets or ,God forbid, something sweet at night). How to navigate the terrain of toddlers who turn up their nose to everything on their plate This, however, is fairly common as most children suffer from what many cohorts of motherhood like to call “picky eaters” or, in some extreme cases, “food averse.” However, rest assured, no matter what someone tells you, this is most definitely not your fault. Unless, of course, you are a picky eater yourself, who likes to make others’ lives hell by choice. Then my pearls of wisdom are not for you. Instead, try a dietician, a nutritionist or a behavioural therapist who can guide you to a specialist. In most cases, you’ll probably be given a nice guideline and long list of dos and don’ts and exercises. If you feel that your case is not as serious as warranting a thera-

pist, then try the following tips to help you navigate the misery of picky eating. Try and respect your child’s appetite or lack thereof. Even the most gluttonous of adults have days when they just don’t feel like eating and maybe your kid feels the same way. Give them a little leeway with their favourite foods as long as they are not binging on crisps all day. Try getting your child involved in cooking and grocery shopping. In some cases, it helps when they see how a meal is actually prepared and where the food comes from. It also makes for better bonding and less stress with the added bonus of children developing responsibility for their food instead of just sitting there, only receiving and dishing out criticism to their caregivers. Try decorating food once in a while for your child. While it is perfectly alright to serve them healthy porridge with its beautiful grey hues, a little decoration never really hurt anybody, especially if it actually helps them get the food in their mouth.

Similarly getting cool and colourful spoons and their very own cutlery can also help get them interested. One of the lessons from having a second child is not to make extra food. Try watering down whatever you are having and not making elaborate creations that are only good for the child. Seeing you eat the same food would make it easier for the child to get interested and eating on the same time also helps.Last but not the least, try and be more forgiving of yourself as a parent. It is likely that your children’s habits will not evolve into perfection overnight, so be patient. As long as they are happy, healthy and active, you’ve got nothing to worry about. ‘The Last Salute’

Du z z , d u z z - B l as t s i n t h e Ai r ! By:Squadron Leader Nusrat Hussain (R) nh.guidingstar@gmail.com ing Commander Zahid Malik was an instructor pilot of T-37 aircraft during my cadetship period of 1976-1978 at the Risalpur Academy of the Pakistan Air Force. We again met in 2014 in Vancouver, Canada. It was a coincidence that, while discussing my book with him, he mentioned to be the first pilot of the Pakistan Air Force who ejected using the famous Martin-Baker (Mk-10D) ejection seat from F-6 aircraft. Although the incident happened on 21 March 1975, a few months even before my joining the Air Force, it sounded so interesting that I asked for details of the episode. Wing Commander Zahid recounted the incident with the sequence of events that helped in putting this piece together. The following lines carry the episode of the first Martin-Baker seat ejection from F-6 aircraft by Flying Officer Malik. Flying Officer Malik, on his first posting as an operational pilot, flew for No.15 Squadron of F-6 (Mig-19) aircraft at Air Base Peshawar. A technical problem of nonopening of the bleed bands occurred in the F-6 aircraft. It increased compressor stalls of the aircraft at circuit altitude causing fatal crashes. This rarely happened, but not closing or not opening of bleed bands at required rpm could be a serious emergency. Ejection attempts made through the original Chinese fitted ejection seats failed miserably. Loss of the pilots became a concern for the Air Force. Air Headquarters (AHQ) contacted the Martin-Baker Company, British manufacturer of the ejection seats. When the Air Headquarters contacted Martin-Baker, they designed and installed a zero-zero ability ejection seat in the cockpit of an F-6 aircraft of No.15 Squadron. It was a relaxing seat having comfortable straps. In addition, a weight machine was placed in the squadron. Every pilot flying the only F-6

6th death anniversary of famous singer ‘Melody Queen’ Noor Jehan was observed on Tuesday. Born as Allah Wasai on September 21, 1926 in Kasur, Noor Jehan started her musical career from Calcutta at the age of nine as a talented child star. She was renowned as one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia and was given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum. After partition, she moved from Bombay and started her film career in Pakistan as actress, singer and the first female film director with film “Chann Wey” in 1951. If a Hebrew prophet spoke from his cradle, she crooned at birth. When Noor Jehan was born on September 21, 1926 to an impoverished musician Madad Ali in Kasur, her aunt rushed out to greet her father thus ‘Congratulations brother! aircraft fitted with the Martin-Baker (MB) seat was weighed before getting into the cockpit. The seat needed the exact weight setting for correct trajectory in case of ejection. Squadron Pilots always desired to fly the aircraft fitted with the MB seat. On 21 March 1975 Flying Officer Zahid was scheduled to fly a Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT) mission against a pair of F-86 aircraft flown by his previous instructor pilots of No. 26 Squadron. He was glad to see the MB seat fitted F-6 aircraft was assigned to him. Zahid got airborne in the supersonic cockpit of the F-6 for a dogfight against the subsonic F-86’s flown by his experienced instructors. The term ‘No shortcut to experience’ prevailed. Young Zahid was thrown off in the combat by the experienced pilots of the subsonic F-86 aircraft. He flicked at 12,000 feet and entered into a spin. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) demanded to eject if one did not recover out of a spin by 10000 feet. Confidence of sitting in the high performance MB ejection seat encouraged Zahid to continue with the recovery procedure even after crossing 10000 feet. He continued his effort to recover till crossing seven thousand feet. He realized any further delay in ejection could take him in a big black hole in the ground to burn with the aircraft. His hand reached the panhandle and he pulled it. Duzz, duzz and duzz sounded three blasts, and he found himself hanging with the chute dangling in absolute quietness and serene air. The world below promised him a second life. He looked down and saw the ground fast approaching his feet. Suddenly he found himself sitting on the backpack which he had failed to separate manually. He had heard that ejection always induced some bruises on the body, if not a broken bone. Finding himself clean without any pain surprised him. He took a few jumps

Wing Commander Mr. Zahid Malik & Mr. Nusrat Hussain

to ensure that his body worked fine. Mixed feelings of joy and surprise surfaced in his mind as he gathered his parachute and waited for the rescue chopper to pick him up. The aircraft burned a few hundred feet away, randomly firing the blast bullets from the wreckage. The ejection was perfect despite taking latitude with the delay in getting out. His timely action kept him alive. The story does not end here. Another surprise awaited him. He had ejected in the tribal area of Pakistan governed by Pathans under tribal law. He saw some Pathans from a nearby market (Bara market) rushing towards him with guns pointed in his direction. He wondered what would happen if some trigger-happy Pathan decided to test his gun? They considered him an enemy pilot who had illegally landed on their territory. Finding himself ‘out of the frying pan into the fire,’ he silently stood there like a deer encircled by a gradually approaching squad of hunters. An uneasy silence prevailed as he didn’t know their language too. Suddenly, a young boy approached him from behind and said, “Sir I am an airman working in the Air Traffic Control of Peshawar Base”. Without wasting a moment, he pulled him from behind and held him in front. He whispered into the ear of the airman to ask them for putting down their guns. The hostile Pathans withdrew their guns after hearing the airman speaking in their Pushto language. A big crowd gathered around him to have a

good peak at the surviving pilot. They took him to the office of the Tehsildar’ (Deputy Commissioner), leaving behind a person to tell the rescue helicopter about his position in the office. Hearing the sound of the landing chopper, he headed out of the office only to see the helicopter heading back to the base without him. Someone from the crowd told the chopper pilot that he had gone by road to the Base. He asked the Tehsildar to arrange for his travel back to the Base. The distance was not too much – about ten kilometers by road. They finally arranged a rickety Wagoner that brought him back to the base. Despite all the hardships he was happy to be alive and safe. An air of joy and festivity prevailed at the base – not because he was alive, but because the new ejection seat of Martin-Baker had passed the test on F-6 aircraft. Everyone wanted to know about the ejection seat. Air Chief was also pleased with the successful ejection from the Martin-Baker seat. The Accident Investigating Officer of the Flight Safety Directorate asked him, “Why did you enter into a spin”? The question was so abrupt that a fighter pilot would think many times before answering it. Zahid was at loss for words to respond to the question – and is still today, even after forty-odd years. Wing Commander Zahid retired after commanding No. 5 squadron of mirage aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force. He now teaches at the Aviation University in Dubai.

Noor Jehan ruled the film industry for more than 35 years and sung appropriately six thousand songs for Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi films. Not only was she a celebrated playback singer but also a gifted ghazal singer. She also gave Pakistan a new genre, which later developed into a category we all know today as national anthems or milli naghme. The new beginning was made during the 1965 war, when Madam sang live on radio and TV some of the most gripping songs ever composed . In 1957, Noor Jahan was awarded the President Award for her acting and singing capabilities. On December 23, 2000, she died as a result of heart failure and was buried in Karachi. Th e B e n az i r m By: TARIQ KHOSA former DG, FIA. n the recent occasion of Benazir Bhutto’s 62nd birth anniversary, her husband and PPP’s co-chairman spoke about her murder and said: “We cannot withdraw the FIR, no matter how much pressure you exert on us and how much you fight for that.”Heraldo Munoz of Chile, the head of the UN commission that probed Benazir Bhutto’s murder concluded as follows: “Probably no government will be able or willing to fully disentangle the truth from the complex web of implication in Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.” I read the former Chilean diplomat’s personal account in his book Getting Away With Murder with great sadness because the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under my command on Aug 6, 2009 was entrusted with the responsibility of taking over the investigation from Punjab police. The Special Investigation Group was given the task of putting together a joint team of various law-enforcement and intelligence agencies to carry out further investigation and interrogate possible suspects. The investigation into Benazir Bhutto’s murder has hinted at a complex web of implication. I distinctly recall that night of Oct 18, 2007 when as inspector general police, Balochistan, I was glued to the TV watching the huge procession Ms Bhutto was leading in Karachi after finally returning home from a nine-year exile. The bombings that targeted her cavalcade that night resulted in 149 deaths and injuries to 402. Ms Bhutto survived that deadly attack and lodged an FIR by becoming a complainant herself. Police did not register the case that she filed on Oct 21, 2007 in which she wrote: “I was informed by the government that certain militant groups wanted to attack me. After receiving this information I wrote a letter dated Oct 16, 2007 to the president of Pakistan informing him of my grave con-

will, and dauntless courage, he united the Indian Muslims under the banner of the Muslim League and carved out a homeland for them, despite stiff opposition from the Govern Hindu Congress and the British Government. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born in Karachi on December 25, 1876. His father Jinnah Poonja was an Ismaili Khoja of Kathiawar, a prosperous business community. MuhamMuham mad Ali received his early education at the Sindh Madrasa and later at the Mission School, Karachi. He went to England for further studies in 1892 at the age of 16. In 1896, Jinnah qualified quali for the Bar and was called to the Bar in 1897. Muhammad Ali Jinnah started his political career in 1906 when he attended the Calcutta session of the All India National Congress in the capacity of Private Secretary to the President of the Congress. In 1910, he was elected to the Imperial Legislative Council. He sponsored the Waqf Validating Bill, which brought him in touch with other Muslim leaders. In March 1913, Jinnah joined the All India Muslim League. As a member of the Muslim League, Jinnah began to work for Hindu-Muslim unity. In 1917, the annual sessions of both the Congress and the League were held at Lucknow. The League session was presided over by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It marked the culmination of his efforts towards HinduMuslim unity. Here, both the League and the Congress adopted a scheme of

u r d e r m

reforms known as the Lucknow Pact. On April 19, 1918, Jinnah married Rutanbai. Their daughter, Dina was born a year later. In 1919, Jinnah resigned from his membership of the Imperial Legislative Council as protest against the “Rowlatt Act”. Until the publication of Nehru Report, Jinnah continued his efforts for Hindu-Muslim unity. The Nehru Report, published in 1928, was severely criticized by all sections of the Muslim community. In December 1928, the National Convention was called to consider the Report. Jinnah proposed some amendments, but they were all rejected. He finally parted ways with the Congress. In 1929, Jinnah presented his famous Fourteen Points in response to the Nehru Report. When he returned from England, he reorganized the Muslim League. In 1934, he was elected as its permanent president. The Provincial Assembly elections of 1937 swept the Congress to power in eight provinces. After almost two years of oppressive rule, Muslims under the leadership of Jinnah, celebrated the Day of Deliverance at the end of Congress rule. The Muslim League held its annual session at Lahore in March 1940. This was presided over by Quaid-i-Azam. The demand for Pakistan was formally put forward

here. This goal was realized on August 14, 1947. Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was appointed as its first Governor General. The establishment of Pakistan brought even greater responsibilities for Jinnah. The refugee problem, the withholding of Pakistani assets by India, and the Kashmir problem were a real test for the Quaid. However, his indomitable will prevailed. He worked out a sound economic policy, established an independent currency and the State Bank for Pakistan. He chose Karachi as the federal capital. However, he did not live long to witness the progress of the state that he had founded. On September 11, 1948, he died after a protracted illness at Karachi. He was buried in Karachi that witnessed the entire nation mourning over an irreparable loss.

emails sent by BB to Mark Siegel and others identifying threats from Gen Musharraf; 3) a copy of BB’s original will; 4) a copy of the final agreement exchanged between BB and Gen Musharraf; and 5) copies of correspondence between CSO [Rehman Malik] and the governments of Pakistan and Sindh on security-related matters. There was no response. Meanwhile, interrogation of five arrested accused, namely Aitzaz Shah, Sher Zaman, Hussnain Gul, Muhammad Rafaqat and Rasheed Ahmed, as well as some other crucial leads led us to aim for arrest of one Ibadur Rahman resident of Malakand who, we believed, played a key role in BB’s murder. (However, this key plotter was reportedly killed in the first-ever drone strike in Khyber Agency in May 2010 or in an attack carried out by a Pakistani fighter plane.) Another suspect was al Qaeda’s No 3 leader and financial and operational chief Mustafa Abu Yazid alias Sheikh Saeed Al-Masri who was said to have claimed responsibility for “terminating the most precious American asset who vowed to defeat Mujahideen”. He was reportedly killed in a CIA drone attack on May 22, 2010 in North Waziristan. Similarly, the crucial suspect or witness Khalid Shahenshah, the security guard hired allegedly by a trusted confidant of the party leadership, was killed in Karachi a few months after Ms Bhutto’s murder. An important meeting of the FIA investigation team was held on Oct 28, 2009 in the

interior minister’s presence. My directions were clear: place all the evidence and leads before the UN team. While the UN commission was generally critical of the conduct of relevant stakeholders, including the earlier Punjab police JIT, it did note in its report that the second JIT by the FIA “has been more vigorous in carrying out its investigations”. In yet another important meeting held at the interior minister’s residence on Nov 25, 2009, the FIA investigators reviewed the progress and asked the agencies concerned for apprehension of key suspect Ibadur Rehman from Khyber Agency. They were also given the go-ahead to visit Madressah Haqqania in Akora Khattak for adducing further evidence. Officers were also assigned to visit the UAE, Saudi Arabia and United States for obtaining evidence from key sources that could shed further light on the conspiracy. Within days of setting a clear direction for the investigators to move forward on the case, I was transferred from the FIA. The case is under trial and I will avoid drawing conclusions. The UN commission submitted its report in May 2010 and their conclusions and recommendations were commented upon by me as a professional in a confidential letter addressed to the then prime minister. The political and security establishment consigned those recommendations to the dustbin of history. Truth hopefully shall prevail eventually. Published in Dawn, July 6th, 2015

cern regarding my security and specified the forces and persons behind them whom I suspected were likely to harm me physically.” The investigations remained stalled until she was assassinated on Dec 27, 2007. The Karsaz case was finally re-registered on Oct 17, 2008, after Gen Musharraf was forced to quit as president in August that year and Mr Zardari had become president. Meanwhile, the UN mission started the formal probe in July 2009 and the federal government entrusted further investigation to the FIA on Aug 6, 2009. Codenamed ‘Operation Trojan Horse’, the case investigation team was tasked with collecting ocular testimony as well as documentary, forensic and circumstantial evidence prior to the Oct 18 Karsaz attack, events between Oct 19 and Dec 27, and post Dec 27, 2007 developments. It was decided to record testimony of all those travelling in the vehicle along with BB: driver Javed; SSP Security Imtiaz Hussain; Makhdoom Amin Fahim; Naheed Khan; Safdar Abbasi; and valet Razzaq. Senator Safdar Abbasi and his wife Naheed Khan had publicly claimed that “sharp sniper fire and a typical intelligence operation” was carried out to eliminate their leader. PPP spokeswoman Sherry Rehman declared she had died from a bullet injury. These statements and the suspicious conduct of Khalid Shahenshah, a security guard who had been caught on TV footage making suspicious signals from near the stage close to BB prior to the exit from the rally where she was murdered, required a thorough probe. We decided to start our investigations by seeking assistance from interior minister Rehman Malik, who was Ms Bhutto’s chief security officer. Accordingly, I sent across to him in writing on Aug 12, 2009 a note through his trusted staff assistant director of FIA, seeking the following: 1) copy of the letter sent by BB to Gen Musharraf on Oct 16, 2007 naming three suspects; 2) copies of

The Test match of the year? Pakistan’s terrific chase ends 40 short

A thrilling Gabba Test highlighted how Pakistan continue to remain predictably unpredictable Pakistan’s bid for a world-record chase fell a mere 40 runs short, allowing Australia to exhale after coming close to coughing up a match they had dominated over the first four days and nights at the Gabba. Asad Shafiq’s sublime century and sturdy support from Yasir Shah took Steven Smith’s men close to their wit’s end, but a Mitchell Starc short ball did for Shafiq when the visitors needed only 41 runs to steal the most fanciful of victories. Three balls later, Smith struck the final blow, running out Yasir from slip after the No. 10 wandered out of his crease, ending a match that had seemed destined for a much wider margin. Starc’s speed and direction were vital throughout, and it remains to be seen whether the huge number of overs bowled by him and Josh Hazlewood will have an impact on their physical preparation for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The Australians had a hangdog air in the field for much of the final day, and their relief at the final wickets was palpable. Pakistan, by contrast, will now feel they are very much in the series, with matches on friendlier surfaces in Melbourne and Sydney to come. The Gabba has always been a major competitive advantage for Australia, and the close result will afford plenty of confidence to the tourists even if they are now 1-0 down with two to play. When play began half an hour early, both sides seemed a little unsure of their ground. Shafiq did not take singles he would have gone for the night before, while Smith’s fields were notably defensive, often sparing only one slip in a match where catches in the cordon have been comfortably the main mode of dismissal. After the first few overs passed without incident, Shafiq and Yasir grew in confidence, doubtless aided by a vocal contingent of Pakistan supporters who made their presence felt in an otherwise deserted stadium. Shafiq was able

to find numerous off-side gaps, while Yasir married impressive defence with the occasional flourish, including an upper cut over the slips and later a handsome flick over midwicket off Jackson Bird. At length Smith brought Nathan Lyon into the attack, but the spinner was unable to find enough consistency to trouble either batsman even if Matthew Wade appealed for a stumping from a straighter ball that Yasir played inside. Lyon soon found himself relieved of duty. As the runs ticked down the tenseness on Australian faces was acute. Several near misses took place: Yasir square drove in the air a millimetre out of the reach of a diving Lyon; he was given out lbw to Hazlewood padding up, but on review was reprieved by the bounce. Next Yasir appeared to get the slightest of touches when glancing Starc, but Wade could not hang on and any appeal was strangled. Only 41 runs were required when Starc finally found the delivery to break the stand, a throat ball that Shafiq could only throw his bat at, resulting in a skier that David Warner was able to cling onto at gully. Rahat Ali took a single first ball, but Yasir’s composure was clearly at an end when he swung wildly at the next one. Next ball Yasir dug out a Starc yorker but ventured out of his crease long enough for Smith to throw the stumps down from slips and begin relieved celebrations for a team that went from dominators to nervous wrecks over the course of Shafiq’s wondrous innings.
