A Paradigm Shift with Trump in the Driver Seat
“I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created, I tell you that. I’ll bring back our jobs from China, from Japan, from Mexico and from so many places. I’ll bring back our money. …Sadly, the American dream is dead. But if I get elected president, I will bring it back bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and we will make America great again.“ (Donald Trump)-----Though Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United State of America, is known for his ability to sniff out things that don’t smell right, he remains a potential risk for the foundation of existing political and global order. He tends to speak without thinking. In other words, he is brave enough to say what he thinks, and he can certainly voice an opinion. If he has an issue with you, he will say it to your face. In fact, a politician in office with that level of transparency can’t be dishonest. Other factors for his win: He went along with popular sentiment of anti Muslim bashing. He praised Putin on his stand on Syria that went against Hillary’s approach to resolve conflicts in the Mid-East. Yet at the same time, Russia is alleged to have manipulated the western public opinion through successfully molding Western mainstream media into behavioral models for facilitating Trump’s win. Question is why did the frustrated Americans become Trump’s supporters? Obviously, his loyalty only focused on America and the Americans—not any political party, any special interest group or foreign entity. Like his slogan reads, “Make America great again!” The amazing confidence level: Trump is so much self-assured and a powerful personality that is per-
fectly suitable for the future political environment. Unlike other politicians who tend to be swayed by lobbyists and special interests, Trump is his own special interest and is unlikely to give that power away to anyone but Trump. He is undeniably a great negotiator, and despite his outrageous public statements in the recent past, he knows how to navigate complex deals and convince a wide variety of industries, businesses, and investors to do what he wants. His track record for his financial success proves that he knows how to build a successful empire. He has his priorities straight: He has emphasized beliefs in free enterprise and a strong military. He repeatedly highlights his acumen for success, his ability to get things done, and understanding of financesHe intends to keep nuclear weapons out of the wrong hands Trump said it himself–he will single-handedly stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. We aren’t entirely sure how, but he’s Trump; anything is possible. Why would Trump make the best president of all time? He claims to save billions of dollars on the UN Climate Change Programs He intends to ban foreign lobbyists fundraising for US Elections. Trumps opponents imply that he was involved with Putin, and that Russia was having an influence on the election. Furthermore, Trump seems to be the only candidate talking about how important it is that foreign governments and lobbyists shouldn’t have any power over US elections. According to him, Hillary, for instance, has been taking millions from corrupt governments for years. Thus, a ban on foreign lobbyists
from fundraising for United States governments means that it will be only American people who should be able to have a major influence on the result of an election. Another one of his ‘Drain the Swamp’ policies is that he will ban all White House officials from lobbying for foreign governments, meaning it will be harder than ever to work with foreign governments and bend the rules to benefit them. That would be great! Trump said, “America comes first.” This policy shows he really means it. This policy will ensure that government officials are bound to work in the interests of the United States, and not the rest of the world. Other negativity on Trump’s part: Trump has unleashed a series of aggressive tweets against the U.S. intelligence community and his political rivals in the recent weeks, and he responded by implying that Brennan had done a bad job as CIA director — and suggesting that he might even have been responsible for information leaking from the intelligence agencies. Anxiety among the Muslim community: The nervous MuslimAmericans Remain worried about Trump Administration. Many fear they will no longer be welcome in America during the Trump era. “We have a new president who has the support of a lot of people who are not very friendly to the Muslim community.” Moreover, Trump continues to advocate a policy of “extreme vetting” of potential immigrants, to screen out those, such as radicalized Muslims, who might be perceived as a security threat. Some of Trump’s immediate challenges: How the United States’ complicated relationship with Russia will im-
prove? Both China and the U.S. bilateral trade is 650 billion dollars, in this neoliberal world they are intertwined; how can they damage each other’s economic interest? How to tailor an affordable ‘HealthCare Alternative’ that doesn’t strip coverage from millions of Americans? Removing doubts on the questioned legitimacy of his presidency: Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., is among several Democrats in Congress who vowed to skip Trump’s inauguration, charging that Russian interference in the 2016 election delegitimizes his presidency. In closing: President Trump is determined to construct a wall on southern border between the U.S. and Mexico to stop illegal migrants. The worst case scenario is he wants Mexico to pay for that wall - WOW! The inexperienced president needs some practice to improve his thoughts towards the friendly Muslim World. Also, he must remember Pakistan for its sacrifices in its fight against terrorism. America’s friendship with Pakistan means an economically vibrant World, of course. At the same time, Pakistan must reevaluate the international economic and political environment in order to prioritize its foreign policy options in its own best interest. Other problem is Trump intends to scrap NAFTA creating a major economic concern for Canada. Since the global situation is expected to change significantly, Ottawa has smartly planned a large-scale economic expansion with China as its central ambition. Certainly, President Trump is going to serve his people. Nevertheless, if things go wrong, he may not be able to complete his tenure.

‘Free Help’! By: Gulshan Alanai
It is utmost important to have knowledge plus wisdom, as knowledge and Wisdom goes hand in hand, mainly the Spiritual wisdom. No doubt the knowledge of the most advanced academic education and technology is to be progressive in this world, but at the same time one needs the knowledge and wisdom of the spiritual world too. A fallen woman couldn’t reach the telephone screaming for help. Fortunately, the modern technology has provided other devices that can be worn or carried closer to the body and get help with the press of a button. Although, such devises fails in many cases, as the man made ways and means of help are limited: fails in many cases; obviously the human precautions are apt to become futile. The worldly knowledge and help is just a stepping Stone but the true help is from the Divine Device, guaranteed help that never fails and its free service is open and available 24 hrs. a day. To become successful in the Spiritual world one needs the ‘Key’ to the door of true knowledge of recognizing the Creator-Higher Power and how to contact HIM. HE has given the ‘Keys’ to the Divine Door of ‘Help’, to pray to HIM directly, no middle man-human gods as prayers to them is in vain and made void. All the Scriptural religions begins in the name of the Creator, HIS worshipers
prostrating to HIM only and obeying the Divine commands through the Divine Revelations brought down and revealed by Angel Gabriel, and other appointed Angels as Army of GOD to help mankind. Man made religions often cut off Angels, Biblical Prophets and the strong dependency is established on human gods carrying the ‘hypnotic power control’, misleading people who has no recognition of their Creator GOD. Concealment of Creator, and HIS Divine truth is unethical, a criminal act, and misleading unjust system of closing the door of ‘Help and Spiritual Healing’. In reality gives an easy access to evil spirit dajjaal-anti-Christ a deceiver. The law of Direct prayer to HIM only reaches HIM with a speed of a Light and can keep the evil away. As HE is even closer than the electronic devices, more positive, reliable, guaranteed and is adequate in any circumstances. Quran:50:-16- “It was WE who created mankind and WE know--- as WE are nearer to him than his jugular vein”. The time of divine wrath, and man-made atrocities, increases bullying, fear, anxiety, and depression that leads to consumption of drugs, Alcohol and suicidal, which can be avoided by the Divine intervention. The parents should recognize the fundamental rights of the children, and immediately should introduce them to the most vital Divine Services available to them and teach them how to pray and communicate with the Divine Power, not to human gods; it is also forbidden in the Bible. One of the living examples of prayer to true GOD is by the virtuous companions of the cave (known as the 7 Sleepers of Ephesus) who had true faith in Creator. Quran 18: 10: “Behold! The youths be-
took themselves to the Cave and Prayed: Our Lord: Bestow on us mercy from thyself and dispose of our affair for us in the right way”. 14: “--Our Lord is the Lord of the Heavens and of earth, never shall we call upon any god other than HIM, if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity”. Luke: 11-1: “Teach us to pray Jesus: asked the disciples as they wanted to learn to communicate, talk, and pour their hearts to GOD”. Q. 46: 5- “And who is more astray than one who invokes besides GOD (Creator)
Christy Clark fails to stand up for forest jobs, Horgan pledges NDP will have their back
Christy Clark has let down forest workers and communities as U.S. softwood lumber penalties loom, and B.C. New Democrat leader John Horgan says forest workers need a government that will defend their jobs and communities.“Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals have overseen the loss of 30,000 forest jobs. Forest workers, their families, and their communities have been neglected for too long, and I want them to know I’ll have their back,” Horgan said. “The last softwood lumber agreement didn’t work for the tens of thousands of people who lost their jobs with the closure of about 100 local mills. International courts have ruled that our timber is not subsidized, yet American corporations keep pushing for higher duties that kill B.C. jobs.“It’s unfair, and it has to stop. B.C. forest communities can’t afford a softwood deal at any cost, and Christy Clark too easily caves to corporate interests.“We need to fight for the right deal to defend and grow forest jobs and the communities that depend on those jobs. We need to play hard ball.” Horgan said B.C. workers and their families have paid a terrible price since the last softwood
deal. “We’ve got to get tougher and smarter to take on the big corporations and make sure B.C. workers and communities come first when it comes to our forest resource. “American and B.C. workers can be together on this. Jobs in housing construction and infrastructure are going to fuel the U.S. economy and they can’t do that without our lumber. B.C. needs to take that leverage to Washington and talk directly to U.S. decision-makers,” Horgan said.“Where has Christy Clark been? Not working for forest workers and their communities, that’s for sure. We’ve got to flex bigger muscles in this fight for B.C. jobs. The U.S. needs our energy and our resources. We need fair and open access to the U.S. market. “Christy Clark has been too busy flogging her LNG failure to be bothered with mounting a strong fight to defend our forest jobs. Christy Clark’s Liberals have given up on our forest jobs and that’s just wrong. These are good jobs for future generations, not jobs of the past.”Horgan said B.C. can’t let any softwood deal punish Canadian lumber and wood products so they can’t compete in the U.S. market, or discourage coastal communities from milling logs here in B.C. rather than shipping them overseas.Horgan said B.C. needs to fight for a new softwood deal that that works for B.C. workers, their families and their communities. “Our forests are a quarter-trillion dollar asset owned by the people of British Columbia. Our forests should benefit people, not just corporations. “The forest companies can move to the U.S. to keep making their profits, but workers can’t. Getting more jobs from our forest resources is a big part of my plan to put more people to work in lasting jobs across B.C.,” Horgan said.

The prime minister said the unemployment rate is getting lower in Pakistan and economic development is taking place at a better pace. He said the international media and news agencies have been presenting positive things regarding Pakistan. He said foreign investment has been on the rise in the country and economic factors, such as GDP and revenue collection in Pakistan, are a testimony to it. He said development and prosperity are trickling down to every part of the country. were very positive and improving further with each passing day. The prime minister said there was no concept of overnight development and road networks were the key to progress, prosperity and development. He regretted that the governments in the past ignored their vital duty of serving the masses selflessly while his government was proud to have gone to all lengths to serve the people of Pakistan. He said today there were new employment opportunities and the benefits of the growth were reaching far and wide. Nawaz Sharif arrived in Davos on Monday to participate in the 47th World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, aimed at fostering greater social inclusion and human development.Accompanied by Begum Kulsoom Nawaz and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi, the prime minister was received at the Zurich International by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN Mission in Geneva Tehmina Janjua and senior Swiss officials. Nawaz Sharif is here on the special invitation of WEF’s Executive Chairman Professor Klaus Schwab to pursue the economic agenda aimed at promoting the national economy.Meanwhile, China’s President Xi Jinping warned on Tuesday that a trade war will prove disastrous and no one will emerge as a winner in such a war............

Terror attacks significantly lessened in Pakistan: Raheel
DAVOS (Dunya News) – Former Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General (r) Raheel Sharif has said on Tuesday that number of terror attacks has significantly dropped in the country.General Sharif addressed World Economic Forum in Davos and in his speech he shed light over Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism and sacrifices rendered by the countrymen and the soldiers. The former army chief let it out that terrorists were taking advantage of digital means of communication and called for the world powers to cooperate to wed-out extremism.
General Sharif retired as one of the most popular military figures among all leaders of the armed forces since the foundation of Pakistan in 1947. He was quoted by various renowned journalism outlets in the world as the most powerful military leader of Pakistan. The former COAS recently accepted to lead alliance of 39 Muslim countries. General Sharif accepted the offer after his conditions were catered to by Saudi Arabia. According to Lt General (r) Amjad Shoaib, the ex-COAS laid down following conditions:
ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah claimed on Wednesday that fake bank accounts had been opened in their names and that transactions worth tens of millions of rupees had been made from those accounts. Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, Kashmir Committee Chairman Maulana Fazlur Rehman and others also claimed that fake accounts were being operated in their names. According to a statement issued by the NA Secretariat, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has ordered the State Bank governor and the Federal Investigation Agency director general to investigate the matter after he received a fake bank receipt of a fixed deposit account that he did not operate. The speaker informed the State Bank governor that these transactions were fake. The statement also claimed that the speaker did not possess any bank account in the city or the bank mentioned on the transactions receipt. “The State Bank has been informed about the issue and the speaker has clarified [that he has] nothing to do with those accounts,” the statement said. Chairman Raza Rabbani informed the Senate during proceedings on Wednesday that he had received a receipt from the SME Bank in the mail at his Karachi residence, according to which an amount of Rs100 million had been deposited into this account. He said he had written to the president of the bank, point-
ing out that he had never operated an account there and hence the question of a transaction did not arise. He said he had stressed that a fraud was being committed in his name and had sought an inquiry into the matter. He said he had also written to the FIA DG and decided to inform the house of this development. Another statement, issued by the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, claimed that Mr Shah had received a term deposit report (TDR) at his National Assembly address, indicating that the SME Bank in Karachi had transacted Rs100 million from his account. “The opposition leader does not have an account in that bank, then how was that report made? When contacted, the bank declared the TDR ‘fake’ and said that they had... received similar complaints from other personalities as well,” the statement said. Mr Shah claimed that the State Bank governor and the FIA DG had been informed so that no one could damage the repute of the political leader. It still remains a mystery as to who was behind these fake transactions or what was the motive behind depositing huge sums in bank accounts opened in the names of prominent lawmakers.Abid Qamar, a spokesperson for the State Bank of Pakistan, told Dawn that they had received information from parliament regarding the fake bank accounts, adding that the central bank would investigate the matter to ascertain how the accounts were opened.

Tug of war between PTI, PML-N continues
ISLAMABAD: The war of words between the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) continued on Wednesday as leaders of the two parties hurled allegations at each other after conclusion of the hearing of the Panamagate case in the Supreme Court. PTI chairman Imran Khan dubbed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar ‘money launderers’ and said the Panamagate case would decide their future. Speaking at a press conference outside the court, Mr Khan alleged that the Sharif family had transferred funds abroad

through money laundering and said the Federal Investigation Agency report, Mr Dar’s confessional statement, BBC documentaries and an article published by The Independent had highlighted the Sharif family’s corruption. “How will these money launderers hold somebody accountable?” he asked. He said it was amusing that Mr Sharif had delivered a lecture on corruption at the World Economic Forum in Davos. “It was like Altaf Hussain of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement talking on how to curb terrorism.”

Fatah and Hamas to form unity government
N E W S
The Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority (PA) has agreed to form a unity government with rival organisation Hamas, Al Jazeera has learned. The agreement was reached late on Tuesday after a three-day negotiation in the Russian capital Moscow. The two organisations will form a new National Council, which will include Palestinians in exile, and hold elections. “Today the conditions for (such an initiative) are better than ever,” said Azzam al-Ahmad, a senior Fatah official said. The deal also includes the Islamic Jihad group, which had not been involved in negotiations for a long time. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party and Hamas have been at loggerheads since the latter seized Gaza in a near civil war in 2007, after it won the 2006 legislative elections. Last year the Palestinian government postponed the first municipal polls in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip in 10 years after the high court ruled they should be held only in the
Fatah-run West Bank. The last time the Palestinians staged elections in which both Hamas and Fatah took part was in 2006. The Palestinian representatives also met on Monday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and asked him to dissuade incoming US President Donald Trump from carrying out a campaign pledge to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Khaled Elgindy, a senior Brookings Institute fellow and former adviser on peace negotiations, said it is still not clear how different the latest agreement is to previous deals. Elgindy said the “most important factor” prompting the unity agreement is the leadership change in Washington DC. “President Abbas may be looking to shore up his domestic position, and to insulate himself from what he sees maybe as a very hostile administration coming in to Washington,” he said. day to commute Chelsea Manning’s sentence brought fresh attention to another figure involved in the Army leaker’s case: Julian Assange. On Twitter last week, Assange’s anti-secrecy site WikiLeaks posted, “If Obama grants Manning clemency Assange will agree to US extradition despite clear unconstitutionality of DoJ case.” Obama’s move will test the promise. The president commuted Manning’s 35-year sentence, freeing her in May, nearly three decades early. Manning has acknowledged leaking a trove of diplomatic cables and national security documents to WikiLeaks in 2010. In a statement, Assange called Manning “a hero, whose bravery should be applauded.” Assange went on to demand that the U.S. government “should immediately end its war on whistleblowers and publishers, such as WikiLeaks and myself,” but he made no mention of the Twitter pledge. His lawyer said he has been pressing the Justice Department for updates on an investigation concerning WikiLeaks. Assange has been holed up for more than four years at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. He has refused to meet prosecutors in Sweden, where he remains wanted on an allegation of rape, fearing he would be extradited to the U.S. to face espionage charges if he leaves the embassy. The Justice Department has never announced any indictment of Assange, and it’s not clear that any charges have been brought under seal. “That investigation concerns potential violations of federal criminal laws, in the form of serious threats to the national security, and the investigation continues today,” Justice Department lawyers wrote in a court filing last year. “From the terms of her request, it is clear that Manning seeks to obtain documents concerning that investigation. In refusing to turn over investigative
documents sought by Manning under the Freedom of Information Act, the department has acknowledged in court records that the FBI is continuing to investigate the publication of national security information on WikiLeaks arising from Manning’s disclosures. Separately, the FBI is also investigating Russian meddling through hacking in the U.S. presidential election. Hacked emails from top Democratic officials and Hillary Clinton campaign officials were posted on WikiLeaks in the final weeks of the presidential race. With the commutation coming just four days before Obama leaves office, any decision on whether to charge or seek to extradite Assange will now fall to Trump administration. In a statement Tuesday, a lawyer for Assange did not address whether Assange intended to come to the U.S. “For many months, I have asked the DOJ to clarify Mr. Assange’s status. I hope it will soon,” Assange’s lawyer, Barry Pollack, said in the statement. “The Department of Justice should not pursue any charges against Mr. Assange based on his publication of truthful information and should close its criminal investigation of him immediately.” Another Assange lawyer Melinda Taylor suggested that he wouldn’t go back on his word. “Everything that he has said he’s standing by,” she said in a brief telephone conversation with The Associated Press. Concern over EU plans to send refugees back to Greece
Refugees, the Greek government and nongovernmental organisations have expressed concern about Germany’s decision to return asylum seekers to Greece in mid-March. The German interior ministry announced on Thursday that it would return newly arrived asylum seekers to Greece - effectively suspending a five-year ban on such returns - in accordance with the Dublin Regulation protocol. Under the Dublin rules, asylum seekers must be returned to the first European Union member country they entered. However, Germany has for the past five years refrained from carrying out such transfers owing to the increasingly poor humanitarian conditions refugees and migrants endure in Greece. The decision came just a month after the European Commission recommended that member countries return refugees and migrants who first entered the EU in Greece back to that country. Abdulazez Dukhan, an 18-year-old who arrived in Greece nearly a year ago after fleeing Homs in Syria, said sending asylum seekers back to Greece will lead to a “sorry situation”. Dukhan is among the estimated 62,000 refugees and migrants who are currently stranded in mainland Greece and its islands owing to a wave of border closures across Europe that followed an agreement between the EU and Turkey in March 2016. He came to Athens two weeks ago after living in a camp in northern Greece’s Thessaloniki for several months. “Here it’s really difficult. I’ve been visiting many camps,” he told Al Jazeera. “There are so many people in squats [in Athens] also, in abandoned buildings and schools. The camps don’t want to take any more people.” Dukhan, who runs Through Refugee Eyes, a photography-driven social media project to raise awareness about the plight of refugees, said the relocation programme for asylum seekers has moved at a snail’s pace. “The people waiting for [relocation] interviews don’t have anything. There’s no work, you can’t do anything.” Greek Migration Minister Yiannis Mouzalas has criticised the EU’s plans, arguing that the current legal framework is “unable to respond to the historic migration flows and leaves the burden to the member states that migrants first arrive in”. Speaking in December, Frans Timmermans, the European Commission’s deputy head, argued that the returns will help to bring back Europe’s asylum system to its normal state. “This will provide further disincentives against irregular entry and secondary movements, and is an important step for the return to a normally functioning ... system,” he said. Elinor Raikes, regional representative for the Europe response at the International Rescue Committee, described the plan as a “rather premature and nonsensical idea”. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Raikes described the conditions in many Greek camps as “substandard and dangerous”. “We are obviously very concerned by this announcement that EU leaders will start sending back asylum seekers to first countries of entry like Greece and Italy.” In recent weeks, winter weather has gripped the region and left thousands of refugees and migrants
- particularly those living in tents and irregular housing - exposed to the elements. Raikes said: “The extreme weather of the last week has exposed even more of the shortcomings of the EU’s response and the response of countries in the Balkans.” She added that Greek authorities should look for a better solution to accommodate the tens of thousands of refugees and migrants who are already in the country. “Camps should be a short-term humanitarian intervention.” As of December, the EU had relocated only 5 percent of refugees and migrants who registered for the programme in Greece and Italy. The union intends to relocate the entire 160,000 people by September. Last month, Greece’s Mouzalas claimed that no refugees or migrants were living in tents or without heating, aside from around 100 people in the Athens-area Elliniko camp. Mouzalas reiterated his claim on January 5, saying that “there are no refugees or migrants living in the cold any more” with the exception of roughly 140 tents in Athens and the Vayiohori camp near Thessaloniki. Yet, in a joint statement published last week, dozens of solidarity networks and NGOs denounced the living conditions in Greece’s refugee camps, pointing out that several camps lack heating, electricity and hot water. The statement urged all parties to “oppose any plans by the European Commission and European governments to resume planned Dublin returns to Greece”, arguing that “survival in Greece cannot be guaranteed for the refugees in light of the inadequate living conditions”. Separately, Human Rights Watch urged the EU not to move forward with the returns. Salam Aldeen, the Danish-Iraqi founder of the Team Humanity organisation, said asylum seekers who passed through Greece “have already been through the hell of living here”. “Greece is not a safe place to live for refugees. I have seen people in incredibly freezing conditions. I have seen children with diseases,” he told Al Jazeera. “They don’t have a future in Greece.” Milena Zajovic, a Zagreb-based spokesperson for the Are You Syrious refugee solidarity group, accused Europe of “playing ping pong” with refugees and migrants. She argued that European border closures that followed the EU-Turkey deal in March 2016, along with pushbacks on borders across the Balkans, have led to more desperate people using smugglers and other dangerous means to reach Western Europe. For those stuck in Greece, degrading conditions in camps, a lack of money, little access to humanitarian goods and an ostensible increase in far-right attacks have created a web of daily complications at a time when hope that the borders will reopen shrinks yet more. “Our volunteers work with people who are losing their limbs to frostbite and resorting to prostitution in order to provide for their families, because Greek officials and international players such as UNHCR don’t seem to have the capacity to properly take care of over 60,000 people stranded in Greece,” Zajovic told Al Jazeera. Lavrov: Russia inviting Trump officials to Syria talks
Sergey Lavrov has said Russia is inviting representatives of the incoming US administration to attend upcoming Syria talks in Kazakhstan’s capital. Speaking on Tuesday in Moscow, the Russian foreign minister praised what he called Donald Trump’s focus on combating “terrorism”. “By concentrating on a pragmatic search for mutual interests we can solve a lot of problems,” he said. He voiced hope that Russian and US experts could start discussions on “fighting terrorism” in Syria in Astana when Syrian government and opposition representatives meet there for talks on Monday. He said: “We hope that the new administration will be able to accept that proposal,” adding that the talks in Astana will offer “the first opportunity to discuss a more efficient fight against terrorism in Syria”. Lavrov said Russia expects that cooperation on settling the Syrian crisis will be more productive than it was with the administration of President Barack Obama. “What we hear from Donald Trump [on Syria] and his team speaks to how they have a different approach [to Obama] and won’t resort to double standards,” he said. Al Jazeera’s James Bays, reporting from Washington DC, said Russia seemed to be trying to “lock in what it sees are military gains that it and the Assad regime have made in the recent months. “Astana talks is where Russia believes it has influence. Russia will be controlling the process. “It hopes to turn the diplomatic situation in a peace deal in the same way as it managed to turn the military situation to Russia’s advantage”. With regard to the interview Trump has given to The Times of London, Lavrov questioned whether the US president-elect had really suggested he would be ready to drop US sanctions on Russia in exchange for nuclear arms cuts. He said his own reading of the interview did not suggest any linkage between the two
issues. But he said Russia wanted to start talks with the US on nuclear weapons and on the balance of military power between the two former Cold War foes anyway. “It’s one of key themes between Russia and the United States. I am convinced we will be able to restart a dialogue on strategic stability with Washington that was destroyed along with everything else by the Obama administration.” Such talks could cover hypersonic weapons, the US anti-missile shield in Europe, space weapons, and what he said was the US refusal to ratify a ban on nuclear testing. Trump has called for a nuclear weapons build-up. Some commentators have said Senate hearings for some of Trump’s picks show they will be tough on Russia. However, Lavrov said he had been encouraged by Rex Tillerson, the incoming secretary of state, whom he cited as saying Russia’s behaviour was not unpredictable. “[That] means that we are dealing with people who won’t get involved in moralising, but will try to understand their partner’s interests,” Lavrov said. Tillerson had extensive dealings with Russia when he was the head of Exxon Mobil oil company. Source: Al-Jazeera
TransLink announces more frequent service on SkyTrain and SeaBus
TransLink has announced the first transit improvements being rolled out as part of Phase 1 of the 10-Year Vision. The first phase of the plan, which is projected to cost $2 billion, was unanimously approved by the Mayors’ Council and TransLink in November. TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond told reporters Tuesday that the service improvements, some of which were already implemented on Sunday, will make room for approximately 185,000 more people on a weekly basis. To achieve this, Desmond says they are investing in better use of their existing fleet by extending weekday peak service and increasing weekend midday and early evening services on the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain Lines. “This will mean shorter waiting times and more options for our customers travelling during some of the busiest times of the day,” Desmond said. TransLink is also increasing peak service frequency on Canada Line on weekdays. Finally, SeaBus service is getting doubled on Sundays and holidays, with sailings every 15 minutes between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Desmond promised the changes announced today would happen quickly and efficiently. “It is so important for us at TransLink to get these services on the road as quickly as possible to meet the needs of this growing region,” he said. Chair of
Mayors’ Council, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, says it’s the biggest investment in transit improvements since 2009. “We desperately need additional service on Canada Line,” Robertson said. “The additional service on Expo and Millennium Line has also been long overdue. That will help reduce the crowding we had on the trains during rush hours.” Robertson says they have enormous challenges with traffic from the North Shore, and the improvement in the SeaBus service has been needed for years. “These are comprehensive improvements around the region, that’s why the mayors supported it so strongly,” he said. “It will make a difference in every community in Metro Vancouver.” But Robertson says they want to see firm commitment from provincial and federal governments on three major projects, including rapid transit in Surrey, the Broadway Line extension and the Pattullo Bridge, so “we can keep the pace up and don’t lose any time building these projects.” Phase 1 will be funded by a $370-million contribution from the federal government and $246 million from the provincial government, with the remaining $1.3 billion coming from TransLink, along with increases in property taxes and transit fares.

Asthma diagnosis often wrong, study reveals
A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found 33 per cent of adults recently diagnosed with asthma by their physicians did not have an active form of the respiratory condition. The clinical study, led by Dr. Shawn Aaron, senior scientist and respirologist at The Ottawa Hospital and a professor at the University of Ottawa, enlisted 701 participants who were diagnosed with asthma in the last five years, randomly selected from 10 Canadian cities. The new research expands on the findings of a previous study conducted by Aaron in 2008. “There’s two reasons why in our study we didn’t find asthma,” said Aaron. “Some of the patients had actually had asthma but their asthma had gone into remission. Asthma is a disease which can relapse and remit. In other words, it can get spontaneously better on its own.” Aaron said at least 20 per cent of study participants likely had asthma at one point, but the disease had disappeared over time. According to the study, 80 per cent of the participants who no longer had asthma had continued to take medication, with 35 per cent taking daily doses to control a condition they no longer had. “Many of these patients were still being treated with asthma therapies on a daily basis. So, they were being over-treated,” Aaron said. The second reason for not finding asthma in the subjects, according to Aaron, is that they never had it in the first place. “In other words, they were misdiagnosed by their physician,” he said. Aaron said it’s impossible to say how many of the subjects were misdiagnosed, and how many had asthma but no longer do. “What we do know is that they were all able to stop taking medication that they didn’t need, that is expensive and can have side effects,” Aaron said. Aaron said while asthma medications are generally easily tolerated, they can have side-effects including an infection known as oral thrush and easy bruising. Long-term side-effects can include osteoporosis, cataracts or glaucoma, and some asthma medicines will cause rapid heart rate, anxiety and tremors, Aaron said. With misdiagnosis, Aaron said, doctors lose the opportunity to properly identify the true cause of a patient’s symptoms. “We found that in two per cent of the patients [there were] serious cardiac or respiratory conditions that had been misdiagnosed as asthma. These people were suffering and they weren’t getting better because the physician that made the diagnosis had gotten it wrong.” The study also concluded that doctors often do not order the proper tests needed to confirm an asthma diagnosis, and instead base their conclusions solely on their own observa-
tions of a patient’s symptoms. “The message that we want to get out to the community, both to patients and doctors, is if you have respiratory symptoms — that is — if you’re short of breath, or you’re wheezing, or you’re coughing and you see your doctor, insist on having a spirometry test,” Aaron said. Spirometry is a test used to assess how well lungs function by measuring how much air is inhaled and exhaled, and how quickly. It’s used to diagnose asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). “Insist on doing the test to confirm the diagnosis prior to treatment,” said Dr. Aaron. Becky Hollingsworth, 72, was admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics two-and-a-half years ago after contracting pneumonia. The retired nurse from Braeside, Ont., just west of Arnprior, said when she got over her illness, she continued to experience shortness of breath and coughing. After examining her symptoms and reviewing her medical history, Hollingsworth’s family doctor diagnosed her with post-infection asthma and put her on medication. “I was really sorry to hear that because no one wants to have a chronic illness,” said Hollingsworth, who was concerned about both the cost and sideeffects of the drugs she was taking. “If you want to travel and you talk to the insurance companies they put your rates up because you have a chronic illness,” she said. After participating in Aaron’s clinical trial a few months after her asthma diagnosis, Hollingsworth discovered that she did not have the disease and was simply recovering from an acute lung infection. “We found out very quickly that I didn’t have asthma because in the clinical trial, they give you medication that will bring on an asthma attack if you have asthma. I never did have an attack.” Hollingsworth said she doesn’t blame her family doctor for getting her diagnosis wrong. “I didn’t think ill of my doctor. I know that doctors can’t know everything. But I did think that spirometry tests could be made available in [general practitioners’] offices, which would be a lot cheaper than putting people on medications.” Source: CBC News
Obama makes farewell calls to Afghan, Indian leaders
A day before his departure from the White House as the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama made farewell calls to the leaders of India and Afghanistan. In a telephone call to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday, Obama urged him to continue the power sharing arrangement negotiated by his administration. A readout released by the White House said Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdullah Abdullah also joined in the conversation between Obama and the Afghan president. “The president encouraged both leaders to continue their shared efforts to enhance national unity and support a lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan,” the readout said. “President Obama expressed his deep appreciation for the steadfast partnership between the United States and Afghanistan.” He commended the leaders for their commitment to the Afghan people and applauded the national unity government’s efforts to reduce corruption and support the rule of law. In his call to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Obama discussed the progress in making India a major defence partner of the US, a
process started by his administration. He expressed his gratitude for the ‘partnership’ and reviewed with Modi joint efforts of cooperation “including defence, civil nuclear energy, and enhanced people-to-people ties”, the White House said. “Both leaders discussed the progress they have made on shared economic and security priorities, including recognition of India as a major defence partner of the United States and addressing the global challenge of climate change.” Source: DAWN News

FAITH Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah’s Apostle said, “It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him.” 1 ’Wills and Testaments (Wasaayaa)’ of Sahih Bukhari.
Writing an Islamic Will Quran Says: In Sura Nisa 4:11Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one’s estate. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one’s parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [or sisters], for his mother is a sixth, after any bequest he [may have] made or debt. Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allah . Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. 12:And for you is half of what your wives leave if they have no child. But if they have a child, for you is one fourth of what they leave, after any bequest they [may have] made or debt. And for the wives is one fourth if you leave no child. But if you leave a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt. And if a man or woman leaves neither ascendants nor descendants but has a brother or a sister, then for each one of them is a sixth. But if they are more than two, they share a third, after any bequest which was made or debt, as long as there is no detriment [caused]. [This is] an ordinance from Allah , and Allah is Knowing and Forbearing. 13:These are the limits [set by] Allah , and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted by Him to gardens [in Paradise] under which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; and that is the great attainment. 14:And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits - He will put him into the Fire to abide eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment. https://quran.com
Writing an Islamic Will
By:Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi 1. Is it necessary? lthough the law (Canadian as well as Islamic) does not say that making of the will is a must, but by looking at the consequences of not having a will, it is necessary - both from legal aspect as well from the shari’ah aspect. Firstly, if a person dies without a will, the government appoints an executor who will divide the estate among the heirs as he/she seems fit. The pay of the executor for this job will come out of your estate, and the government system takes it time in getting jobs done! Secondly, from the shari’ah point of view, your heirs may get more or less than the shares specified for them in Islam. By not writing a will, you are leaving the door open for a non-Islamic authority to distribute your estate according to its own views.

Last edition Al Names were
So not having a will is costly as well as prob problematic from both Canadian and Islamic points of view. Considering the consequences, I think it is wajib for a Muslim in Canada to have an Islamic will; more so when you realize that the law of the land allows you to do so. 2. The One-Third Option After a person dies, what is the relationship between him and his estate? There are three possibilities: • He has full control over it through a will. • He has partial control over it through a will. • He has absolutely no control over it. Islam has taken the middle position. It says that when a person dies, he still retains the right to decide about up to one-third of his entire estate. But as far as the two-third is concerned, the deceased person loses the right to dispose according to his wish. The two-third must be divided according to the shares specified by the shari’ah. (Most of these shares have been specified in the Quran itself.) This law is part of the over-all system which Islam has introduced for the distribution of wealth in society. This right of disposing the one-third according to your own wish can be exercised only by making a will. You can do whatever you like with the one-third: give to a family-member, a relative, a friend, a charitable cause or organization, etc.For example, you can use the 1/3 or a part of it to make -if you like- the shares of your wife or your daughter equal to those of your other children. When the Qur’an talks about wasiyyat which is normally translated as “will”, it refers to the will covering the one-third only. For example, it says, “It is prescribed upon you, when death approaches (any) one of you - if he leaves behind wealth – then he should make a will (wasiyyah) for his parents and near relatives in a fair manner [in the one-third]. This is a duty upon the pious people. (2:180) Writing more than one-third to a person or a cause means depriving the potential heirs of their rightful share in the estate; and, therefore, it is considered unjust and wrong. The Quran says,If a person fears that the testator is [wrongfully] inclined [to one party] or is sinning [by depriving the rightful heir in the will, and so that person intervenes between the testator and the potential heirs] and makes peace between them – then there is no sin on him. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (2:182) What has been described in this verse as wrongfully “inclining to one party” and “sinning by depriving the rightful heir” is related to the two-third of the estate. 3. What is the “estate”? An “estate” is the collective name for everything that you own. The estate consists of the followings: • all properties, goods and investments that are in your name. • half of the specified portion of the goods and investments in which you are a co-owner.

The first type of property is very straight-forstraight-for ward. But there are certain cases in the second type which need explanation: Joint Account: According to Canadian laws, with death of one spouse, the money becomes the property of the surviving spouse. Such a transfer of money is not valid in Islam: Islamically, half of the money in that account becomes part of the surviving spouse and the other half will become part of the deceased estate. House: Houses are normally in the name of the couple. Such ownership can be of two types: common ownership and tenants in common. “Tenants in common” is also without any problem because when one spouse dies, his/her share becomes part of the estate. But in “common ownership”, there is a problem because with the death of one spouse, according to Canadian laws, the entire property becomes that of the surviving spouse. This is contrary to Islamic laws, which says that the surviving spouse gets his or her 50% and the remaining 50% becomes part of the estate of the deceased. 4. Wife’s Share Firstly, as the definition of the “estate” shows, a house jointly-owned by a couple is divided - according to the shari’ah - into two: half becomes part of the estate of the deceased, and the other half was from before the property of the surviving spouse. Secondly, according to the shari’ah, the wife is not entitled to land of her husband (whether an agriculture land or a residential lot): she only inherits the house on the land according to her proportional shares in inheritance. In common ownership case, the wife is the owner of 50% of the house and the land; the other 50% becomes part of her husband’s estate from which she will inherit 6.25% of the house. So in the end, the wife becomes the owner of 56.25% of the house and 50% of the land. Both the above rules (# 3 & 4) create practical problems in this part of the world; therefore, I suggest the following: • Either give the house to your wife during your life-time • Or, if the value of the 50% of the land is within the one-third of your entire estate, then you can write that land to your wife in your will. In this way, half of the land is her property from before and the other half will go to her on strength of the 1/3 option in your will. Actually you can do this for the entire 50% of your residential property (house and land together) if it falls within the 1/3 of your estate. In theory it will work out like this: • 50% of the land and house belongs to your wife • 6.25% of the house is your wife’s share of inheritance • 50% of the land + 43.75% of the house goes to her by using the 1/3 option • Or, if the value of the 50% of the land is more than the one-third of your estate and your children are mature (baligh), then dis-
cuss it with them and ask for their consent to write the entire house for your wife in the will. If they give the consent (which is irrevocable), then you can write the house to your wife in the will even if it is more than her proportional share of inheritance. 5. Executor or Executrix (A) It is a normal practice to appoint your spouse or another family member as the executor of your will. There is nothing wrong with this. The only conditions which are necessary for an executor/executrix is he or she should be baligh, sane, and Muslim. It is not necessary for him/her to be `adil; trustworthiness would be a sufficient quality for an executor. (B) I am told that by making your children the heirs of their shares, your children will end up paying tax on that; whereas if your wife becomes the heir of everything than no tax is applied. If this is true, than you can do the following: You can make your wife the executrix of your will and also leave everything to her – BUT she must know (through a supplementary private will or a letter) that she owns only her specified share according to the shari’ah and she has to hand over the shares of her children when they become mature enough (not just baligh) to handle their own finances. (C) If you accept to be an executor for someone’s will, then it becomes wajib for you to fulfill your duty. You can only reject this responsibility while the testator is alive; you cannot reject this role after his/her death. 6. Guardian of Children In this part of the world, it is very important to write in your will about the guardian and custodian of your children. Under normal circumstances, the surviving spouse is made the guardian, and this is indeed the best decision. Here, for the sake of record, I would like to mention the conditions which must be found in the guardian of your children. The guardian must be a Muslim, sane, and trustworthy. Those who have the right of custody of children (in order of preference) are: father, mother; paternal grandfather; and then anyone specifically appointed as the guardian of the children. However, the duty of maintenance for the children falls upon the following (in order of preference): father; paternal grandfather; mother; other grandparents collectively. The last person in this list can be from outside the family, but one must be very careful in selecting such a person. The most important condition is that he/she besides being trustworthy must also be a Muslim who will raise the children according to the teachings of Islam. Source: www.al-islam.org

The BC Muslim Organization - History
The B.C. Muslim Association (BCMA) is a non-profit organization incorporated under the Societies Act on November 17, 1966 corresponding to 4 Sha-ban 1386. The BCMA is currently the largest Muslim organization in the province representing 40,000 Sunni Muslims. The Muslims in British Columbia are experiencing exponential growth, from a population of 10,000 in 1980 to 100,000 almost today. In 1980, there was only one location for Friday prayers in all of Vancouver and its surrounding suburbs. Today there are over fifteen locations for Friday prayers in the Greater Vancouver area alone, not including centers in the outlying areas such as Kelowna, Nanaimo, Abbotsford, Prince George and Victoria. British Columbia like many other communities in North America brings together Muslims from all over the world. Our Muslims are the first and second generation im-
migrants from Africa, Arab countries, Asia, Bosnia, Fiji, India, Pakistan, Turkey. Globally this is a unique situation as no other location in the world brings together such a diverse group of Muslims. The BCMA has been active in establishing a Muslim institutional presence in British Columbia. The BCMA with its seven regional branches and six chapters has undertaken the responsibility of developing and maintaining religious, cultural and educational facilities for our present community and future generations. Today, BCMA owns and operates thirteen Mosques in British Columbia and more are planned. The Association has long recognized that the Mosque/Islamic Centre and Muslim Schools are the symbol of the aims and purposes of Muslims collective life. The BCMA operates the B.C. Muslim School (BCMS) Richmond and Surrey Muslim School encompassing an elemen-

tary and secondary school. The purpose of the Muslim Schools is to provide a superior standard of education, to foster academic achievement, and to cultivate an Islamic spirit in each student. The BCMS motto is Perseverance, Excellence, Commitment and Knowledge. On a daily basis, The BCMS strives to instill in its students these virtues. The school expects of its pupils high standards of academic achievement, commitment and integrity combined with respect, selfdiscipline and code-of-conduct based on Islamic teachings. The BCMS meets and surpasses all curriculum requirements set by the Ministry of Education and as such is accredited and receives full funding pursuant to the Independent Schools Act from the provincial government. The Ministry of Education has also approved Arabic to be taught as a second language at the B.C. Muslim Schools.

Jerusalem hospital school offers hope to ill children
The one-classroom school in an East Jerusalem hospital allows chronically ill Palestinian children to continue studies. oria hospital-church complex in occupied East Jerusalem [Zena al-Tahhan] by:Zena Tahhan ccupi ed E ast J erusal em - F or P al estinians l iving unde r occupa tion, achievements that benefit the community are often cel ebrated a s a form of resistance. A new one-classroom school, aptly named “Persistence”, for chronically ill Palestinian chil dr en being treated at a hospi tal in occupi ed E ast J erusal em, is seen as j ust that: a triumph. The school, the first of its kind in Palestine, has wedge d a sl iver of hope in an otherwise bleak atmosphere. Here, children suffering from cancer and kidney disease, and who are usually forced to miss out on years of schoolwork, are able to continue their educ ation for free whil e unde rgoing treatment. I nside the smal l cl assroom, the wal l s are dot ted with chil dr en’ s pos ters that read “our future is ahead of us” and “thank you to the best school in Augusta Victoria”. A l ongside hang hand- dr awn rendi tions of the Palestinian flag, colourful houses and birds. I n one corner of the room, S hahd, a l ittl e girl with short, ash blonde hair and big brown eyes sits quietly at her desk, colouring in a worksheet of the A rabic l etter she j ust l earned. The five-year-old from Bethlehem has been diagnosed with leukaemia. Underneath her pink j umpe r, her smal l arm is connected to an intravenous dr ip. I n another corner, A mj ad, from G az a, rushes to the board with enthusiasm to sol ve a maths problem before his teacher is finished writing it out. The doctors have not yet determined which type of cancer the nine-year-old boy has. For the close to five million Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, the importance of the Augusta Victoria H ospi tal cannot be overstated. It is the only hospital in the occupied Palestinian territories that I srael has p ermitted to
provide radiation therapy for cancer patients. It is also the only hospital offering specialised paediatric kidney dialysis treatment. This means that children from the West Bank and G az a must spe nd a conside rabl e amount of time away from their home towns, receiving treatment in J erusal em. O veral l , 3 5 p ercent of the hosp ital ’ s p atients hail from the G az a S trip , whil e the remaining 65 percent come from the West Bank. For kidney dialysis patients, mainly from the West Bank, treatment can mean a visit to Jerusalem, which involves crossing arduous Israeli checkpoints, at least three times a week. For cancer patients, primarily from Gaza, treatment can mean sp end ing months at a time at the hosp ital . “Children undergoing kidney dialysis miss two to three days of school a week. Our cancer patients stay here from one month to 40 days, at least, and therefore miss a lot of material ,” M ohamed Q abaj a, head nurse of the pa edi atrics de pa rtment, said.“ The school is compensating for that. We’re benefiting greatly because we’re taking the school to the pa tient’ s bed. The chil d has started feel ing that their time at the hospi tal isn’ t j ust about getting treatment, inj ections and pa in, but it has al so become about l earning,” Q abaj a tol d Al Jazeera. “They feel as though they are at home.” I srael has l ong banned the pr esence of any radioactive material, used in radiotherapy, in the occupi ed territories. I t conside rs the material to be a “ dua l - use” pr oduc t that can be utilised to make nuclear weapons, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) in Israel confirmed to Al Jazeera. X-ray machines are also banned. P al estinians und er I srael i occupa tion have no immediate access to radiation therapy for cancer treatment. They must apply for hard-toobtain pe rmits from I srael to be transferred to East Jerusalem, which can take weeks, if not months, a nd c an be fatal for the pa tient. Israel also regularly denies and delays permit reque sts. P H R , which hel ps pa tients in G az a obtain ex it pe rmits to receive medi cal treatment, says that there has been an increase in the number of permits delayed or denied over

the years. I n 2015, 31 pe rmit reque sts were de nied whil e 17 were d elayed. Last year, the number of pe rmit reque sts de nied rose to 42, whil e 26 others faced d elays, according to PHR. Israel also stipulates that any P al estinians from G az a bel ow the age of 17 must be accompanied by a first-degree relative such as a pa rent, grandpa rent, aunt or uncl e, but pa rents unde r 5 are not el igibl e for a pe rmit, meaning the chil d must spe nd months without their mother or father. Like many children making the journey from Gaza, 12-year-old Malak who suffers from leukaemia, has been at the hospital for two months with her grandm other W ida d e l - A ssal . “She wants her mother to be with her very badly. The only thing that is keeping her patient is the knowledge that there’s no way for her mother to be here. But what can we do? That’ s the l ife of a P al estinian,” said el - A ssal , with tearful eyes. As a side-effect of chemotherapy, Malak’s liver enzyme levels have become disrupted, complicating her med ical cond ition [ Z ena al - Tahhan] “ I t’ s been two months and we don’t know how much l onger we have to be here,” she continued, adding that she is exhausted and unfit to take care of a child. Walid Nammour, the chief executive officer of the Augusta Victoria Hospital, says Israel has made things unnecessarily difficult for the children. “When a child is suffering from cancer that’s when they need the mother the most. But Israel only permits sending the grandmother or other rel atives. I t is so inhumane.” W ith the op ening of the school , the hosp ital vows to remedy the difficulties and nurture the overal l wel l being of the chil d ren. Samar Abu Sara, a teacher at the school, says the p roj ect has been “ l ife- changing” for the p atients. To the chil dr en, expl ains A bu S ara, the cl assroom has become a safe sp ace and a change of scenery, away from the pain of treatment. “ The school has given them hope . S ometimes the children see us in the corridors and early ask us, ‘When is it my turn to study?’” ”Sometimes, they don’t like going back to their rooms
because they know that that will mean checkups or drawing blood. They feel safe here.” For patients with kidney disease, the teacher must mentor the child as they undergo kidney dialysis for three hours. Nawal Abu Nima says her daughter Lama’s overal l tempe rament has impr oved since being enrolled at the school. “She finds herself at the same l evel as her cl assmates, or even ahead of them, which makes her very happy,” Abu Nima told Al Jazeera. But the hospital, which is owned and operated by the Lutheran World Federation, may face closure due to unpaid debts from the Palestinian Authority, the semi-governmental body that administers the occupied West Bank. The PA is unable to pay the fees, worth more than 120 million shekels ($31m), for the patients it referred to the Augusta Victoria Hospital, creating a cash flow crisis for the hospital. “If the hospital closes, everything will go down with it - incl udi ng the school ,” said N ammour. “ E ven though we’ ve managed to get a l ot of financial support for the school, the hospital’s situation is bad.” “ W e do not need more dona tions - we need the PA to pay what it owes.” Still, despite the risks, Nammour says that the ope ning of the school repr esents a mil estone for the hospi tal and an act of nonviol ent “ resistance to occupa tion.” “My aim behind the school is to promote an understanding of human dignity for the Palestinian, ” N ammour tol d A l J az eera. “ I t is not about merely giving treatment to a child, who would then end up il l iterate. I t is a comp rehensive ap proach that reflects our commitment to nurturing the P al estinian ind ivid ual , ” he continued . “ The school is a unique expe rience and we’ re very proud - that we live under an occupation choking us day and night - but we’ve shown that we want to live in dignity and that we can do i t.” Source: Al Jazeera News

Toronto MP Ahmed Hussen 1st Somali-Canadian appointed to federal cabinet
Somali-Canadians celebrate Hussen’s appointment as immigration minister By Michelle Cheung, CBC News He was the first Somali-Canadian to become a federal Member of Parliament, and now many in the GTA’s Somali community are celebrating as York South-Weston Liberal MP Ahmed Hussen has broken another barrier: he’s been appointed as Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. “It’s a really great thing to happen to our community,” said Mahad Yusef, the executive director of the Somali Immigrant Aid Association. “It’s something that we really needed, not just for the Somali community, but for the whole black community.” Hussen’s appointment was announced Tuesday in Ottawa by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as part of an extensive cabinet shuffle. He replaces John McCallum, the veteran MP representing Markham-Thornhill, who will become Canada’s ambassador to China. Hussen, 41, knows the challenging path to citizenship first-hand; he came to Canada as
a 16-year-old refugee from Somalia in 1993. “Each of us coming into public life are informed ... by the different experiences they bring to the table.” Hussen told reporters in Ottawa Tuesday. “I’m no different in that sense. I’ll bring my experience as an immigrant to Canada but also as an immigration lawyer — someone who worked many, many years before running for office as a community activist, a community organizer and a community advocate.” When asked Tuesday if the idea of immigration and taking in refugees is something that needs defending these days in light of the election of Donald Trump in the U.S. and the Brexit vote in Britain, Hussen said Canada is showing the way when it comes to welcoming immigrants. “I’m extremely proud of the fact that Canadians have always been welcoming to others, people who’ve sought asylum and ... we’ve been the better for it. The story of Canada is
By Kathleen Harris, CBC News Stéphane Dion will pursue work ‘outside active politics’ after being dropped from inner circle Chrystia Freeland has been named Canada’s new top diplomat, replacing veteran politician Stéphane Dion as foreign affairs minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s first major cabinet shakeup. Dion, a former Liberal Party leader who served over 20 years in office, is considering an offer from Trudeau to take a diplomatic post after he was dropped from cabinet.
Trudeau called Dion a longtime friend and colleague who has contributed greatly to public service and the country. “I have offered him a very important, senior position ... something that is going to be key in the coming years as we move forward, and he is rightly taking a moment to consider what his future service will look like,” Trudeau said at a news conference following the swearingin ceremony for new cabinet ministers. Sources had told CBC News Dion was offered the job of Canada’s ambassador to the European Union and Germany.
PM says he doesn’t see an issue but ‘we look forward to discussing’ it with ethics commissioner By Matthew Kupfer, CBC News Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed he and his family accepted trips on
the Aga Khan’s private helicopter during his vacation to the spiritual leader’s private island in the Bahamas, which appears to violate a section of the Conflict of Interest Act. “The travel back-and-forth from Nassau to the island happens on the Aga Khan’s private helicopter, which he offered us the use of,” Trudeau said Thursday. Trudeau said travel to Bell Island “only happens through private means.” Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson is considering an investigation into Trudeau’s vacation, which took place after Christmas. “It’s something that certainly we look for-
the story of immigration.” Mahad Yusef agrees that Hussen’s roots in the city’s Somali community will be useful in his ministerial duties. “Ahmed will share his knowledge and expertise and his lived experience. He understands the challenges. He understands the opportunities and he’s been, for many years, advocating for immigration issues,” said Yusef, who has known Hussen since he settled in Canada. “My feeling is our community is honoured that we have representation in cabinet.” Before jumping into politics Hussen was a lawyer, political activist and the national president of the Canadian Somali Congress. He was also appointed by former prime minister Steven Harper to the Cross Cultural Roundtable on Security — a post he held until 2012. The roundtable was established to create a dialogue between Canadians and the federal government on matters related to national security and the federal government. sponsible for crafting Bill C-51, the controThe roundtable reported to the minister re- versial anti-terrorism bill.

ward to discussing with … the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner. But we don’t see an issue on that,” Trudeau said. Conservative MP Andrew Scheer wrote the ethics commissioner Monday asking for a review of whether the trip is a gift that violates the Conflict of Interest Act. Section 12 of the act also has rules prohibiting cabinet ministers from accepting sponsored travel. “No minister of the Crown, minister of state or parliamentary secretary, no member of his or her family and no ministerial adviser or ministerial staff shall accept travel on non-commercial chartered or private aircraft for any purpose unless required in his or her capacity as a public office holder or in exceptional circumstances or with the prior approval of the Commissioner.” he Open
Kaplan: A conservative argument
to face off in French-language debate
13 candidates will square off over taxes, security and defence in Quebec City By Kathleen Harris, CBC News Conservative leadership contenders will put their Frenchlanguage skills to the test tonight in a high stakes and potentially humbling debate in Quebec City. Thirteen candidates with proficiency ranging from beginner to bilingual will take the stage to square off over government, taxes, security and defence. CBCnews.ca will carry the debate in French, starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. Quebec Conservative MP Gérard Deltell, who has not yet endorsed any candidate, said the French-only debate is a clear indication the party believes the next leader must be bilingual. He said tonight’s forum will be crucial for helping establish who is best positioned to take on Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the next election. “What I want is someone today who can have conversations in French and in English with our party volunteers and things
like that; maybe doing some interviews,” he said. “But two years from now, I want a leader [who is] fluently bilingual, able to have a face-to-face debate with Justin Trudeau in French.” But there are mixed views on whether bilingualism is imperative in the Conservative leadership race, or critical to becoming prime minister. Brian Lee Crowley, managing director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, believes that proficiency in French is of declining importance, as the rise of social media affords political leaders the ability to reach the electorate outside of traditional debates and mainstream media interviews.
and Accountable Government guidelines on the prime minister’s website repeat the restriction on sponsored travel — providing leeway in “exceptional circumstances and only with the prior approval” of the ethics commissioner. The prime minister said he did not go to the ethics commissioner before his trip. NDP leader Tom Mulcair said in a statement that the prime minister has admitted to breaking the Conflict of Interest Act. “These were not exceptional circumstances and therefore cannot excuse the use of a private helicopter,” he said. “This is a clear conflict of interest and it’s worrisome that the prime minister has been so evasive about the specifics of this trip.”
for a strong NDP By: MISCHA KAPLAN I have always found George B e r n a r d Shaw’s quip about democracy being a “device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve” to be compelling. Watching the NDP’s desultory search for meaning, one can’t help but wonder what the great man of letters might think about the current state of Canada’s social democratic party. If there is merit to Shaw’s observations about the nature of democracy, then it may be logical to assume that the NDP is suffering from a serious lack of self-worth. Perhaps the NDP’s current membership doesn’t “deserve” strong leadership, or the chance to witness their party form a federal government. The decision taken last April to toss out nationally respected leader Tom Mulcair certainly does not reflect well for NDP apologists. (Didn’t party members realize what a competent opposition politician their leader has been, so outstanding in fact that his performance earned him the Parliamentarian of the Year award from Maclean’s for 2016?)
Shaw’s observation also raises a more troubling question about the party’s drift into political irrelevance: Does Canada as a whole no longer deserve the NDP? As a small government conservative, I have always found the NDP’s vision of Canada distasteful. I am distrustful of the party’s close connections to organized labour, and of the fact that its support base is composed of what I believe to be mainly out-of-touch special interest components of society, such as student groups, civic action societies and highly educated urban intellectuals. Having said that, the NDP’s role is critical in a country with as strong a social democratic tradition as that which exists in Canada. We are, after all, a country that prides itself on a socialized national medical system. Whether conservatives like it or not, a large segment of the Canadian population wishes for the NDP to assume power; they also took nearly 20 per cent of the popular vote. Going back to 2011, when the late political genius Jack Layton was party leader, more than 30 per cent of the popular vote went to the New Democrats. That’s three out of 10 Canadians who would have been happy with a social democratic government. I admit the thought makes me cringe a little, but I also respect it as a reality of our political fabric.

Educating your child
By:Mere Naleba MY Government doesn’t simply talk about the importance of education, we make access to quality education a reality, said Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday while opening Jeremiah College in Suva The college provides Year 9 education to 37 students.Mr Bainimarama reminded students, teachers and members of the community present at the event of the need to support the education of every child. He said there would be classrooms constructed for Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 in the coming years, provided the interest from students grew to a reasonable number. He said construction of schools in villages, communities located in the outskirts of town and city boundaries shows Government’s commitment in bringing education to children who do not live in urban centres. “Today is a tremendous occasion for the people of Tacirua and all of its surrounding settlements, as it marks the start of an educa-

Fire breaks out in Nadi Town
Iraqi forces have won a string of swift territorial gains in Mosul in the fight against ISIS after four months of slow progress, but resistance from the militant group persists at various locations, including the city’s university complex. Once Mosul is recaptured from ISIS, what then?: Brian Stewart Iraqi military commanders say troops had secured more than half of Mosul University by Saturday against stiff resistance, including snipers perched within classrooms, dormitories and behind the trees that line the campus streets. The massive operation to retake Mosul from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has captured about a third of the city since October. Government troops retook the eastern edge of a third bridge in Mosul on Saturday and a cluster of buildings inside Mosul university, according to a senior Iraqi officer overseeing the operation. Iraqi forces now control the eastern sides of three of the city’s five bridges that span the Tigris river connecting Mosul’s east to west. Warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition bombed the city’s bridges late last year in an effort to isolate ISIS fighters in the city’s east by disrupting resupply routes. Iraqi forces entered the university from the southeast on Friday morning and by nightfall had secured a handful of buildings, Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil and Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi said on a tour of the university Saturday. “We watched all the ISIS fighters gather in that building, so we blew it up,” said special forces Sgt. Maj. Haytham Ghani pointing to one of the blackened technical college buildings where charred desks could be seen inside. “You can still see some of their corpses,” he added. Thick clouds of black smoke rose from the middle of the sprawling complex on Saturday morning. By afternoon, clashes had intensified with volleys of sniper and mortar fire targeting the advancing Iraqi forces. Convoys of Iraqi Humvees snaked through the campus, pausing for artillery and airstrikes to clear snipers perched within classrooms, dormitories and behind the trees that
line the campus streets. As Iraqi forces have closed in on the Tigris river that roughly divides Mosul into eastern and western halves, their pace has quickened. ISIS defences in the city’s east appear to be thinning and unlike in the surrounding neighbourhoods, Iraqi officers said they believe Mosul university and recently retaken government buildings are largely empty of civilians — allowing them to use air cover more liberally. Iraqi soldiers at Mosul University said while they were still coming under heavy small arms fire, ISIS resistance was significantly less than they faced during the first weeks of the Mosul operation. “We were targeted with only four car bombs where before (ISIS) would send 20 in one day,” special forces Lt. Zain al-Abadeen said. “And they aren’t armoured like before, they’re just using civilian cars.” Medics operating a small field hospital in eastern Mosul said civilian casualties have dropped significantly over the past three days as Iraqi forces moved into government complexes like the university rather than dense civilian neighbourhoods. Mosul outcome to shape Canadian ground commitment in Iraq Mosul is ‘guerrilla warfare,’ city could be liberated in 3 months: Iraq commander Despite the massive operation to retake Mosul, the militant group maintains tight control of the city’s western half where Iraqi forces will likely encounter another wave of heavy ISIS resistance. The west of the city is home to some of Mosul’s densest neighbourhoods and an estimated 700,000 civilians. Source: The Associated Press

Here’s what really happens to all those gifts you return to the store
C
anadians return roughly $46B worth of goods every year, and most of it won’t go back on store shelves By Aaron Saltzman, CBC News The weeks after the holiday season mark a busy time of year for retailers — but not in a good way. This is the time when most gifts get returned. Every year, hundreds of millions of items — between six and nine per cent of goods sold — come back, and the cost to retailers is enormous. Canadians spent $513.4 billion in retail stores in 2015, meaning as much as $46 billion worth of items were sent back. From digital boards to big, bad Amazon: Things to watch in retail in 2017 Thing is, most of those products, even if they’re in unopened boxes in pristine condition, don’t go back on store shelves. “[That] is actually very rare,” says Ted Salter, national leader for consumer products and retail at consultancy Ernst & Young — now known as EY. “I don’t think people realize, more often than not, depending on the category, those items are going into what we’ll call a reverse logistics process.” That process involves companies such as Liquidity Services. The U.S.-based company, which bills itself as “the world’s largest marketplace for business surplus,” has been operating in the States since the late ‘90s and is now expanding to Canada. Is Boxing Day still worth it? Some bargain hunters say Black Friday has better deals
Liquidity Services’ 10,000-square-metre warehouse in an industrial area northwest of Toronto is filled wall to wall with items — mostly holiday gifts this time of year. The company says about 50,000 items move through the facility every two to four weeks — between 600,000 and 1.3 million products per year. Each and every one of those items is something that has been returned to a major retailer by a consumer. “Wrong colour, wrong size, something might be defective. We get a lot of buyer’sremorse returns where the consumer has taken it home and chosen to send it back,” says vice-president and general manager of Canadian operations John Lee. Lee estimates about 70 per cent of the items are suitable for resale without any need for refurbishment. There are several reasons why stores don’t want the stuff back, Lee says. Some retailers simply aren’t equipped to handle the inflow of product. But others don’t want their brand associated with items that aren’t brand new. Retail jobs flag as sales boom “In the past,” Lee says, gesturing to the forest of pallets stacked high with goods, “all of this could have ended up in landfill.” Instead, Liquidity Services sorts, catalogues and, if necessary, refurbishes the returns and then turns around and sells them at deeply discounted wholesale prices. In some cases, that sales revenue goes back to the retailer after Liquidity Services takes
its commission. But sometimes the retailers are just happy to save the costs of having to deal with returns. How good are the deals? To give you an example of the type of discount, one pallet filled with home furnishings which in total would have sold at retail for $4,500 is listed here at $700. Liquidity Services sells by the pallet or by the truckload. Pallets are sold at two different price points: one for those with a manifest and one for those without. The manifest lists every item on the pallet so the buyer knows exactly what they are going to get. Pallets without a manifest are much cheaper because they’re simply labelled with a general category — such as housewares — and the buyer is purchasing the goods without knowing exactly what they contain. Think of it like a sort of Storage Wars but with store returns. Who buys this stuff? Lee says deep discount retailers, eBay power sellers, flea markets, even individual consumers can buy returned items from the
By Timothy Sawa and Lisa Ellenwood, CBC News anadians forced to pay some of the highest drug prices in the world could save billions through changes promised by Health Minister Jane Philpott in an exclusive interview with the fifth estate. An analysis by the fifth estate shows that Canadians, for example, pay far more than people in New Zealand for drugs produced by the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company. For every dollar Canadians spend on seven popular drugs sold by Apotex in both countries, Kiwis spend just 11.5 cents. And overall, according to several studies, Canadians pay the second-highest drug prices in the world, after only people living in the United States. In the interview with the fifth estate, Philpott called the situation unfair and vowed to fix it. “There is no question that the current status is not fair, that it’s not right, that we’re paying much higher prices than other countries are and that’s exactly what I’m working on,” she said. “Canadians are going to see that we are going to be able to save [them] in the order of billions of dollars per year.” 500 per cent more Canadian-owned Apotex sells $2 billion of drugs every year. On average, the company says, one out of every five prescriptions is filled in Canada with an Apotex product. Watch “Canada Drug Problem” on CBC’s the fifth estateFriday at 9 p.m. Billions wasted on drug spending in Canada, research shows Get ready to pay more for private drug plans Amlodipine is a popular blood pressure treatment made by the Canadian company and sold in both Canada and New Zealand. The annual cost in Canada is $130. In New Zealand, the same drug costs about $10 a year, meaning Canadians pay 1,200 per cent more. A one-year supply of the generic antibiotic Amoxicillin made by Apotex sells for about $32 in New Zealand. In Canada, the same annual supply is nearly $200 — or more than 500 per cent more. Apotex did not respond to repeated requests for comment. “Canadians are paying far too much for medicines,” said University of British Columbia health economist Steve Morgan. “Canadians don’t like to get ripped off. And they don’t like their governments to allow them to continue to get ripped off.”
‘Absolutely essential’ Philpott says she’s seen the effects of high drug prices first-hand. “I’ve been a family doctor for over 30 years so you don’t need to convince me that making sure Canadians have access to appropriate medications is absolutely essential.” In her interview with the fifth estate, Philpott said she plans to change Canadian regulations to force patented drug companies to lower their prices, and continue to push provincial-federal negotiations to lower generic drug pricing in Canada. ‘We have not continued to have a fair system.’- Jane Philpott The reforms, she says, will bring Canadian prices “down in line with what we’re seeing in countries like New Zealand.” The changes are needed, Philpott said, because drug companies failed to follow through on a promise to Canadians. “Our price reviews were set up in a way that the deal was it would be fair to Canadians, that the pharmaceutical companies that were being paid high prices would invest in research and development,” Philpott said. “In increasing ways we haven’t actually seen that come true, and we have not continued to have a fair system.” Compared to an average Patented drug prices in Canada are regulated by comparing what we pay to the average price paid by seven other countries. As long as our prices are in line with that average, no action can be taken. The problem, Philpott said, is the United States is one of those seven countries, which skews the average high because the United States has the highest drug prices in the world. She wants to remove the United States from that list and replace it with a country like New Zealand, which has some of the lowest drug prices in the world. “We are going to be introducing some of this work in the coming months,” she told the fifth estate. Calling for pharmacare Canada is the only developed country with universal health care that doesn’t have some form of universal pharmacare. A growing number of academics and advocates are urging the Canadian government to create a system of universal pharmacare like New Zealand in order to push our drug prices even lower. According to a study published in the Cana-
dian Medical Association Journal, more than three million Canadians can’t afford to pay for their prescription drugs. That can lead to diseases going untreated or worse. “I’ve had a person in my practice who had high blood pressure and was to take treatments for that,” said Dr. Nav Persaud, a physician in Toronto. The treatments are “relatively inexpensive, but he couldn’t afford them,” said Persaud. “He was doing everything that was publicly funded, but he could not afford the medications and now he’s dead.” Twenty-five years ago, New Zealand created a separate national agency to negotiate drug prices for the entire country called PHARMAC. “PHARMAC’s a jewel in the crown of our health-care system,” said Nigel Murray, who sits on the PHARMAC board and administers one of the largest health authorities in New Zealand. “It helps us deliver affordable drugs, it helps us standardize our approach, which is very beneficial for negotiating deals with drug companies and providers. So it’s an essential part of our landscape to deliver affordable, sustainable health care.” Almost free The agency routinely negotiates rebates as high as 99 per cent off list prices for generic drugs. As a result, the country can afford to give drugs away virtually for free to its citizens. Kiwis pay only $5 for a prescription, no matter the cost of the drug. “We believe that patients should be able to access health care, pharmaceuticals, no matter where you are in New Zealand,” said Steffan Crausaz, PHARMAC’s CEO. “No matter who you are in New Zealand, you should be able access them at very low cost at the point that you access them.” The trade-off is New Zealand can’t afford to cover all drugs. A recent report by drug industry group Medicines Australia showed New Zealand falls behind most developed countries when it comes to speedy access to new drugs. But PHARMAC CEO Crausaz said that misses the point. “We’re not actually looking and saying our measure of success is getting access to everything that’s possibly available as soon as it’s possibly available,” he said. “We want to know, did we make the best choices? We want to know, do we have a sys-
company’s website or through resellers like Amazon. It’s a business that has been well entrenched in the U.S. for years now but is really just starting to get off the ground in Canada. And it’s growing fast, thanks mainly to online sales. “We’re probably seeing 20 per cent growth year-over-year in online returns,” Lee says. “And it’s not that customers are returning more, it’s that online business is growing.” It’s an arrangement that seems to work for everyone. What was once a total write-off for retailers has now become a potential source of additional revenue. Fewer items are needlessly going to landfill. And consumers who don’t mind buying nearly new have access to less expensive products. At this rate, returning may become the new re-gifting.

tem that enables patients to get the treatments that were funded equitably no matter who you are or where you are.” More leverage? In Canada, the drug purchasing system is split between a public system funded by the provincial and federal governments for poorer, older and indigenous Canadians and a private system, mostly funded by employers, for working Canadians. About 20 per cent of Canadians pay for their own drugs. But if Canada had a single purchasing and negotiating agency like New Zealand, experts say there would be more leverage to negotiate better drug prices. ‘If we don’t find a solution in the next 10 years, things will have collapsed.’- Steve Morgan “It’s a crisis that I think lower-income countries have faced for a long time, and it’s a crisis of affordability,” said Morgan. “The new medicines that are coming to market in Canada and around the world are no longer hundreds of dollars a year per patient, not even thousands of dollars a year per patient. The new medicines coming to market are increasingly hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, per patient,” Morgan added. Sign up for CBC’s weekly health newsletter, Second Opinion “If we don’t find a solution in the next 10 years, things will have collapsed.” The group that represents patented drugs manufacturers in Canada declined to be interviewed by the fifth estate but Innovative Medicines Canada did send a statement. “We are strongly committed to working collaboratively with governments and other health-care stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to ensure more timely and consistent patient access to medicines, including addressing gaps in care and access to treatment for those who cannot afford it,” the statement said.
17 FOOD Five winter food rules Rabi ul Thani 21. 1438 January 20, 2017
By Lisa Guy 1. Choose your white foods carefully It is tempting to reach for comforting “white” carbohydrate foods in winter such as cakes, cookies, white pasta, rice and breads. These refined foods promote weight gain as they are digested quickly and cause your blood-sugar and insulin levels to spike. Making the switch to wholesome wholegrain varieties will help you maintain a healthy weight and keep you full for longer, as they are rich in fiber and help keep your blood-sugar levels balanced. Nutritious wholegrain choices include whole oats, quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, wholegrain pasta and grainy breads. 2. Drink two liters of water a day We often forget to keep our water intake up during winter, yet it is important to drink plenty of water all year round for good health. Don’t forget air conditioning and heaters can be very dehydrating.Try to drink at least two litres a day. Herbal teas count too. There are many wonderful health-promoting teas to choose from such as ginger (great for improving circulation), green (a powerful antioxidant and can help promote weight loss), rosehip (rich in vitamin C), peppermint (good for digestion) and chamomile (helps calm your nerves).
3. Eat protein with every meal One of the best ways to maintain a healthy weight is to eat good-quality, low-fat protein at each meal. Protein foods have a low GI and help to stabilize blood-sugar levels, which in turn will help curb sugar cravings and prevent you snacking on sugary carbohydrate foods. A good guide is to keep protein servings to the size and thickness of your palm. Some healthy protein choices include nuts, seeds, legumes (and legumebased foods such as hummus), eggs, fish, lean meat, chicken, low-fat dairy and soy products. Protein foods also help to create a feeling of fullness, preventing you from overeating. 4. Fill half your plate with fruit and veg At least half of your diet should be made up of fresh fruit and vegetables (including legumes). Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of important vitamins and minerals including vitamins A and C, folate, iron and calcium. Purple, red and orange varieties are particularly high in potent health-promoting antioxidants. However, if you are watching your waistline, don’t overdo higher-GI vegies such as potato, sweet potato and pumpkin. Aim to have about three pieces of fruit a day. Try adding fruit to your porridge, and make stewed fruit to have with muesli or natural yoghurt in the morning. 5. Start your dinner with soup Have a small bowl of low-calorie soup before your main meal to help manage your weight. Doing this is not only a great way to increase your vegetable intake, it can help reduce the amount of food and calories you consume in a meal, according to a study by Pennsylvania State University in the US.To save time, make a healthy vegetable-based soup at the beginning of the week and freeze portions. Don’t forget to add immune-boosting ingredients such as garlic, ginger, onion to help protect yourself from colds and flu. Source : http://www.bodyandsoul.com

HEALTH
THE PULSE SCIENCE – External and Internal Signs
By: Nada Adam he Humors are a fluid substance to which food primarily is transformed. Some of the humor type is good and is transformed to become a part of the beneficiary organ cells. While the other type of humor which is not good is not usually transformed to become a part of the beneficiary organ cells. Hence, should be eliminated from our body; rarely is this type transformed to become a humor of good type. The Good and Overabundant Humoral substances: They are classified in 4 categories: • Blood category (which is the best) • Phlegm category • Yellow bile category • Black bile category These humors are the fundamental blood structure, as well as, the tissue structure of all simple and complex organs. Therefore, the organs healthiness is contingent on the moderation of humors and the organs ailments are due to the non-moderation of humors. Each of these humors has a density, taste, odor and physiological function from which the normal and abnormal humors can be distinguished. Below is a brief mention of every kind of humors and its normal and abnormal effect on the blood vessels. Blood Humor The normal Blood Humor has a moderately thin texture compared with other humors. It originates and stored in the liver. The temperament of the normal blood humor is hot and wet. Some benefits of the normal Blood Humor - To warm and tenderize the arteries. To dissolve clots which are coagulated by coldness-dryness that exists in platelets and preserves the temperature of blood. Phlegm Humor The normal Phlegmatic Humor has a moderately thickening texture compared with other humors; it originates in the liver and it’s stored in the lungs. The temperament of the normal Phlegmatic Humor is cold and wet. Some benefits of the normal Phlegm Humor - To reduce the temperature of blood vessels, make it elastic; As
well to prevent the blood thinness, reduce its temperature, and conglutinate the ar arteries’ walls with its viscosity. Yellow bile Humor The normal Yellow Bile humor is the foaming of blood which floats on the top, because it is the lightest and the thinnest texture among the four humors. It origi originates in the liver. The least and Thinnest of the yellow Bile Humor which is ex exuded from the liver goes to the blood, and most of it goes to the gall bladder to be stored. The temperament of the normal Yellow Bile humor is hot and dry. Some benefits of the normal Yellow Bile humor – (Correlated with the blood) to thin and dissolve the blood and to make it pass through the narrow streams of blood vessels; as well it contributes in its role to prevent the blocking of these vessels, thus reduce LDL (low- density lipoprotein) in blood by preventing the precipitation of lipids and resisting blood clotting factors particularly caused by thick phlegm. The normal of Yellow Bile humor increases temperature of blood vessels and reduces their elasticity; as well prevents the blood from thickness, reduces blood viscosity and increases blood temperature. Black bile Humor The normal Black Bile humor is turbid, namely it is the blood precipitant because it’s the thickest texture and the heaviest among the four humors. It originates in the liver. The least of the Black Bile humor which is exuded from the liver goes to the blood and most of it goes to the spleen to be stored. The temperament of the normal Black Bile humor is cold and dry. Some benefits of the normal Black Bile humor – (Correlated to the blood) is to toughen and condense the blood; slow the blood flowing and prevent it from dissolving; thus the Black Bile humor due to its coldness and contraction helps to maintain fixing the damaged walls of blood vessels. The normal Black Bile humor reduces elasticity and temperature of blood vessels; prevents the blood from thinning and reduces its temperature. The Change of Each Humor has *External Signs* such as: • Indicators in the face, eyes, tongue, gum and taste in the mouth • The quantity and form of what is discharged from the nose and mouth • The Psychological condition as grief, anxiety, obsession, sadness and the ability to overcome them • Issues related to Libido, semen, skin,
Babies at high risk because of severe eczema or egg allergy need a checkup before peanut protein exposure arents and doctors are encouraged to introduce babies safely to peanut-based foods by six months to reduce the risk of developing a peanut allergy, according to new guidelines in the U.S. and Canada. The guidelines were released Thursday from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. They’re based on a 2015 randomized trial that proved early introduction of peanut-based products slashed the risk of developing peanut allergy by age five among high-risk infants. Infants are considered high risk if they are allergic to eggs, have severe eczema or both. If at high risk, parents should ask a doctor on how to proceed. The physician may want to do a test first and offer the first taste during the four-month office visit. Peanut allergies can be reduced in high-risk children, study suggests Early introduction of peanuts may cut allergy risk in babies: studies For other babies at low risk of allergy or moderate risk because of mild eczema, the expert panel recommends introducing foods containing peanuts at around six months. Dr. Susan Waserman, an allergist and immunology professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, conducts research on peanut
exposure as a treatment. She’s been practising for about 25 years and has watched the pendulum swing on advice for preventing peanut allergies. “There’s been such a fear factor about early introduction of peanut amongst parents that it may be a hard message to sell initially,” Waserman said. While the landmark Learning Early about Peanut Allergy or LEAP study was rigorously conducted, some questions remain unanswered, Waserman said. For instance, once children have been introduced to peanut products, how long should they continue to eat them and how much? For now, doctors advise giving the child a small amount about three times a week. The guidelines are endorsed by the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. What kinds of foods? Parents and caregivers should avoid feeding whole peanuts to infants because they pose a choking hazard. Instead, peanut butter, peanut flour or the peanut-flavoured puff snack

nails and strength of muscle, urine, stool and others…Moreover the change of every humor has *Internal Signs* related to the • *Pulse * • The Fundamental Principles of the Pulse Science* Pulse Guides in Humoral Medicine are paraphrased in 10 defined categories:
move 1. Measurement of the diastolic movement of the Pulse. 2. Form of strength of the beating Pulse. 3. Period of the movement of the Pulse. 4. Quietness period of the Pulse. 5. Tenderness or stiffness of the Pulse Artery. 6. Fullness of Pulse Artery. 7. Touch of the Pulse Artery. 8. Regularity and irregularity of the Pulse. 9. Regularity and irregularity of the inconsistency of the Pulse. 10. Comparison between moderation and non-moderation of the period of the movement of the Pulse and its quietness. All the Changes in the Pulse indicate the Presence of Effective causes Leading to Illnesses*
Therefore, Hot illnesses change the structure of the arteries in accordance with its hot and effective humoral causes and Cold illnesses change the structure of the arteries in a counteractive form of the hot illnesses in accordance with its cold and effective humoral causes. Through this method, the implications of Pulse signs are interpreted. The change can occur in one humor or two or three or even all four humors. If the change is in more than one humor, the composition and the combination of the external and internal signs of every humoral change will appear; consequently being the origin of various and ramified illnesses that has many causes and symptoms. *The Principles of Treatment by Medicament and Food* The causes of illnesses are due to nonmoderation of the sections of changes of the four humors as aforementioned. The treatment of illnesses is by eliminating its origin of cause namely by eliminating the non-moderation form by its counteractive form, by reinstating the moderation form namely health, through moderating the temperaments of these humors in the body. *The Treatment of the Excess or Decline of the Relevant Humor, whether Blood, Yellow bile, Phlegm or Black bile, is through Counteractive Treatment* Therefore the Temperament of the proper and suitable Medicament and Food is SPECIFIED Only AFTER Knowing the Temperament of the Disease to be Treated Counteractively. How to give babies peanut-based based foods to cut allergy risk

Bamba can be used. How? Try watered-down peanut butter: Mix two teaspoons of smooth peanut butter with two to three teaspoons of hot water, and let cool. Mix two teaspoons of smooth peanut butter with two to three tablespoons of a favourite puréed fruit or vegetable. Mix two teaspoons of peanut flour with about two tablespoons of a favourite puréed fruit or vegetable. Where? For most children, those at low to moderate risk, the first feeding can be done at home, Waserman said. Foods that might trigger allergy symptoms
should be introduced when a child is free of symptoms of colds or other illnesses that could be mistaken for an allergic reaction. What to watch for Parents should give a small portion, then wait 10 minutes, and if there’s no reaction then give the rest. They should keep watching for later reactions. Andrea Patrick of Edmonton introduced a pinch to her first son, Beck, at 13 months of age back when the medical advice was to wait. “He began crying immediately, his lips began to swell up and then he began to pass out and lose consciousness. That’s when we really knew that something was wrong,” Patrick rere called. Beck is now seven years old. Mild symptoms to watch for include a rash or hives around the mouth or face. By the time younger son, Marlo, 5, was born, a pediatric allergist told the family not to wait to introduce allergens. “We were really nervous,” Patrick said. “We did not want a repeat of the situation that had happened with Beck when he went into anaphylactic shock.” The new guidelines won’t prevent allergies in everybody, Waserman said. Health experts say parents should call for emergency medical help if they’re home and a child suffers an anaphylactic reaction. Source:CBC News

Kwantlen Polytechnic University DigitaLENS Visual Media Workshop Screening
On Jan 6, A group of high school students were selected throughout the Surrey School District to attend the DigitaLENS program this fall at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. DigitaLENs is a community partnership program with the Visual Media Workshop, The Surrey School District, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Freed Education Co. with generous funding by Telus. The students have been working to better understand social justice concepts focusing on media misrepresentation of race. The program was coordinated and instructed by Aisha Amijee, who has recently completed a Masters of Education in Justice, Law and Ethics from SFU. “I spent a considerate part of my masters education studying how to educate the community at large and not just individuals. More so, I was invested in working with my own community and especially Muslim youth in my community. I studied the misrepresentation of Muslims and Islamophobia and how these topics intersected with giving a voice to those who just aren’t systemically heard. And a lot of the time, youth in our community aren’t heard.” The students studied in the

DigitaLENS program at KPU attending the KPU Talks Lectures at Science World, Photography Expeditions in Vancouver Downtown and field trips to the Vancouver Art Gallery. The program consisted of lectures, field trips and lab time in the state of the art KPU Journalism Lab making digital videos and using the recording booths. The four month program ended with a Film Festival Screening at KPU. This year, the DigitaLENS Film Festival was held on January 6th and was a full house and very well received event that was open to the community. Students chose a variety of topics to make their personal digital stories on including Islamophobia, Mixed-Race Identities, Bullying, Social Pressures on Female Students and more. Maleekah Ar-Rahiman, a student from Clayton Heights, shared a story about when she first understood that Islamophobia was real in her high school and in her life. Her parents were blown away by their daughter’s digital story and passion and talent for journalism. “ Our daughter Maleekah told us she wanted to go into journalism. We didn’t know how serious and passionate she was until
The family unit is the key to the success of any family literacy program. It is through the family that the seeds of literacy grow. The impact of the parent-child interactions establishes and nurtures the importance of literacy. The role of the parent as a model cannot be under- estimated. It is through modelling that the child establishes lifetime patterns. Initially the child imitates the modelled behaviours and eventually adopts these behaviours. When parents read to their children it assigns a positive value to literacy. Not only are the parents showing the child that reading is a good thing, but the parent also experiences the positive reinforcement of developing his or her own skills.

After seeing the final project I saw the storyteller in my child and I was very proud” shared Adeela Buksh, Maleekah’s mother. “Since started taking the program Maleekah is more serious about her future. Only in grade 10 but she is determined to be on track and be in charge of her future.” Another student, Fartun Hirsi, from Princess Margaret Secondary shared her story of being a newcomer in Canada and fitting in after living in Kenya and Somalia. Her courageous digital story relayed the struggles of newcomer students in elementary and high schools and the journey to self-confidence and self-acceptance. Fartun was the recipient of the DigitaLENS KPU Scholarship. All of the students received a KPU Certificate for the DigitaLENS programs in January. Always Listen
any moons ago there was a folk tale passed down from generation to generation. The story is about the Cho-Cho Man or the Boogie Man. It all began with a young boy named Dakota. Dakota’s mother had asked him to gather some firewood for the evening fire. The nights were getting cooler. Instead of doing the chore right away, Dakota figured he had enough sunlight left to do two things. He would gather the firewood after he played with his friends Morgan, Joey, and Bo. Not long after, his mother began to wonder why Dakota never came with any firewood. Night had fallen fast and it was too hard to see the firewood. Dakota realized what had happened. He told his friends about his predicament and they said that they would help their friend. Soon after, the young boys were gathering wood in the dark.
Dakota’s mother was worried that something had happened. She went looking for Dakota. Not long after, she heard the boys. She had mixed feelings. She was happy to see Dakota but she was also mad that he hadn’t listened to his mother. She wanted to teach Dakota and his friends a lesson so she sneaked into the bush very quietly. Then she picked up a twig and threw it. The twig hit the ground making noise. It caught the boys’ attention. She threw another broken twig in the opposite direction. The boys jumped. The mother had a hard time holding back her laughter and a muffled moan sounded through her fingers. The boys were definitely scared. But Dakota was the brave one. He ventured forward. The mother moaned again; she threw another twig. The boys were transfixed. Once more the mother moaned in a low and deep voice, “Listen to your mother.”
The boys dropped everything and ran. The mother could not hold back her laughter and the boys, hearing this, scurried home even faster. After the mother had picked up some firewood, she proceeded home, where she found Dakota in tears. Dakota exclaimed, “Mother, Mother I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you.” His mother held him with love and she knew that he was truly sorry. From then on when Dakota felt like not listening, the mother would mention, “The boogie-man will scare you if you misbehave.”

5 Secrets to a Successful Long-Term Relationship or Marriage
here have been a thousand or more articles written about how to have a successful long-term relationship or marriage, but none that seem to capture some of the core ingredients I’ve found important in relationships. So here’s the straight dope, from my experience. Before I begin, however, it’s important to dispel a common relationship myth — relationships are (or should be) easy. That is simply not true. The grass always looks greener in other people’s lives, because few people share the truth of the amount of work that goes into relationships (hence why 50% of marriages end in divorce). Relationships even the best relationships in the world — require constant attention, nurturing, and work. If you can understand and accept the need for constant attention and work in your relationship, you’re started in the right direction. 1. Compromise Relationships are about not only taking, but also giving. If you find yourself not giving very much, or feeling resentful of how much you give and how little you receive back, you may be in an unequal relationship where one side is taking more than they are giving. For instance, couples sometimes mistakenly believe that “love will help them deal with any issue that comes up, and that if the other person truly loved you, they would just do as you ask. But people are independent with their own unique needs and personalities. Just because we found someone we want to spend our lives with doesn’t mean we give up our own identity in the process. 2. Communicate Relationships live and die not by the sword, but by the amount of discussion. If two people can’t find a way to openly and honestly communicate their needs and feelings to one another, the relationship doesn’t stand much of a chance long-term. Couples must find a way to communicate regularly, openly, and directly. This doesn’t mean waiting for an argument to tell your significant other how much he bothers you with his throwing his clothes
on the floor instead of the hamper. It means telling him when you feel the need to, and to do so in a manner that is respectful but assertive. 3. Choose Your Battles Carefully After marriage or when two people move in together, couples tend to discover pretty much the same thing no matter who they are – that they are two different people and living together is harder than anyone ever told them. Love conquers a lot of things, but it is no match for living day-in and day-out with another human being (especially if you’ve spent years on your own). Prepare yourself for this challenge by choosing what arguments you want to turn into a full blown battle. For instance, do you really want to start a fight over the toothpaste cap or how clean the shower is? Or would you rather reserve your energy for the discussions over finances, kids, and career paths (you know, the things that might really matter to a person). Too many couples fight and bicker over the dumbest things, especially
when put into context of issues of true importance. 4. Don’t Hide Your Needs Sometimes when we enter into a long-term relationship, we put ourselves second, behind the other person’s needs and desires. We might give up working to have a child, or agree to move to another city to help support our significant other’s career. And that’s fine, but you need to be realistic first with yourself about whether such things really matter to you or not. If they do, you need to find a way to communicate such needs with your partner, and compromise where possible.

By: Shabnam Khan - FamilCounsellor t is natural for people to lose heart when faced with failures. When we encounter failures, they dampen our determination and leave incredible scars in our life. Just remember, failure does not emotionally disturb some. Their success towers over all the failures. We are led to believe that successful people never fail in any of their attempts. Let us not be under the impression that successful people have had a smooth life. The fact is that people succeed only after making mistakes, learning from them and by avoiding recurrence of the same mistakes. It is important that one should learn from failures and try to overcome one’s shortcomings. When we watch a tree with it’s sprawling branches and a massive trunk, we are taken in by it’s grandeur and majesty. We don’t see the hidden roots that have stuck deep into the soil. The roots that are responsible for nourishment and strength of the tree. We often notice the fruits of success of a person and not the struggle behind it. We often mistake success as fortune and failure as misfortune. All success is the result of hard work and ceaseless effort, while failure is a
sluggishness, miscalculations and sometimes unforeseen accidents. Every failure can be a stepping stone to success provided we understand the cause of failure and overcome it. Failures are lessons in life. Life is a series of trails and errors and it is impossible for anyone to avoid errors and wish away trails. Don’t grieve over failures. Make every failure an experience and learn the right lessons from it. When you start grieving over failures you miss the lesson they teach you. Every failure has a cause and instead of ruminating over failure, analyse the cause. Therein lies the lesson. The lesson you learn is positive advantage. Failures need not frighten you. A positive approach to failure will work as a springboard for you to leap towards success. “ In this limitless universe, you can never be stuck. For any further enquiries regarding the services, please contact The Miracle
Two people will rarely have exactly the same wants and desires out of life — that’s just a fantasy. Instead, expect that sometimes your two paths will diverge. Express your needs at those crucial moments, but always find a way to do so respectfully and with an open mind. 5. Don’t underestimate the importance of trust and honesty Different people have different areas of concern, but almost everyone values trust and honesty from their partner above all. Why? Because your partner is the one person you want to be able to depend upon in the longterm, without question or doubt. Little things where your significant other hasn’t been completely honest shouldn’t be blown out of proportion, because virtually everybody tells little white lies (especially when one is dating). Focus instead on the big things, like if they say they’re a lawyer and you discover they’ve never even passed the bar, or they say they like kids but later on insist on never having one. Strong relationships are like a really good
conversation with someone you admire, trust and cherish – they are ever-changing, engaging, wonderfully rewarding and sometimes surprising. But in order to continue the conversation because you want to see what the person has to say next, you have to respect your significant other’s opinion even when you disagree with it. And just like a good conversation, you need to work on keeping your end up too. You need to show attention and nurture the relationship constantly, just as you would nurture anything you value in life. You don’t just “get married and that’s the end of it. Indeed, marriage is just the beginning of a long process of learning to openly and honestly communicate with another person in a respectful and caring manner. If you’re up for it and follow these tips, you’ll be on a road to having a more successful relationship or marriage. But remember — it takes two to tango. Share these with your significant other or spouse and use it as an opportunity to begin the conversation of your life.

Why This Women’s March Organizer Has Made Activism Her Life
M
uslim activist Linda Sarsour is one of four organizers spearheading the upcoming Women’s March on Washington. But her prominence as a social justice advocate didn’t happen overnight. In a recent episode of Vox’s series “The Secret Life of Muslims, Sarsour recounts the event that kickstarted her activism and what she sees as one of her biggest civil rights victories so far. Sarsour was 21 years old when Sept. 11 occurred. A native New Yorker, she watched in dismay as her loved ones tried to hide their Muslim identity for fear of retaliation. “My whole perspective on what country I lived in just changed in a matter of minutes, Sarsour says in the video. That experience prompted her to go volunteer at the Arab American Association of New York, and she hasn’t looked back. More than fifteen years later, Sarsour is now the organization’s executive director. Sarsour has been active in some of the biggest social justice movements of our day including fighting for racial equality, fair
policing and religious freedom. One of her greatest victories involved getting New York City to incorporate two Muslim holidays into the public school calendar making it the largest school district in the country to officially recognize the Islamic holy days. Currently she is the National Advocacy Director for the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC) and ACCESS and locally serving as the Director of the Arab American Association of New York, a social service agency serving the Arab community in NYC. Linda has been at the forefront of the debate around the New York Police Department’s unwarranted surveillance of the American Muslim community. She continues to work with city officials and allies to push legislations and policies that respect the dignity and civil rights of New York residents while maintaining safety and order. Linda was recently named American Muslim of the Year by the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the United States, honored by the White House in 2011 as a “Champion

Sqn.Ldr. Nusrat Hussain (R) nh.guidingstar@gmail.com n the year 1984, after the ATC course from CATI Hyderabad, I was posted as the Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) at the Pakistan Army Qasim Aviation Base of Dhamial. It was about forty-five minutes drive from my home in Islamabad. The base housed small aircraft and helicopters of the Pakistan Army. The Pakistan Air Force exercised command over the Control Tower. Well trained other ranks of the Air Force controlled the Air Traffic. Then a Flight Lieutenant and as SATCO, I looked after the overall administrative and operational affairs of the ATC squadron. Babar Ramzan was my schoolboy buddy from the same class of Central Government Model School in Satellite town Rawalpindi. Because of our joint friendly extracurricular actions, Babar and I failed together in the same ninth class of the Central Government Model School in Rawalpindi. He led the key naughty actions and I mostly followed him like an obedient student. After failing in the ninth class, he immigrated to another school and got admission in the tenth class without wasting a year. I, being a loyalist of Model school, stayed in the same class to repeat the lessons of the previous year. During my posting as Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) at Army’s Qasim Aviataion Air Base Dhamial, Captain Baber Ramzan performed as a pilot from the same Air Base. He lived ten minutes’ drive from my home in Islamabad. Sometimes we carpooled.
Captain Ateeq Malik, who also lived in the vicinity, was another helicopter pilot at the Base who joined us. Three of us in our respective Army and Air Force uniforms often traveled together in the same car. On the way to the base and back to home we discussed all the good, the bad and the ugly prevailing issues on the planet. We always remained in friendly contact. Ateeq retired after reaching the rank of full Colonel in the Pakistan army. It was a chilly afternoon in August 1992 when Major Babar Ramzan, along with Major Khalid Sohail Sultan and Brigadier Masood Naveed got airborne in a helicopter from the highest elevation battlefield of Siachin area. They were carrying out reconnaissance on a Lama helicopter. The copter was hit by a missile fired by the Indian Army, killing all its occupants. Major Babr Ramzan and both the other officers embraced martyrdom and were awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat (Star of Courage), which is the third highest gallantry military award of Pakistan. Baber loved the army more than his life. He gave his life in the line of duty while in uniform. Our common friend then Major Ateeq received the body of Babar in the Combined Military Hospital of Rawalpindi. He told me that Baber’s body was intact and in one piece. Babar was in his flying overall with two days beard and a smile on his face. Ateeq told me of touching Baber’s face. Two days after his martyrdom it was soft and his overall was wet with fresh blood. Remembering Babar is like a walk down the memory lane of our younger years.
Baber left behind a wife and three children. His wife was a doctor; we visited each other with our families spending some good times. It was unfortunate the younger son of Baber died in a road accident in New York. Central Government Model School was one of the leading schools of Rawalpindi at the time. One of the few co-educational schools of our time, Model school produced many notable citizens of Pakistan. The late Major General Ehtesham Zameer and Imtinan Zameer sons of famous poet Zameer Jafri came from the same school. Imtinan played First Class cricket in Pakistan. Our class of about 25 students including the girls produced a few Generals of the Pakistan army. Brigadier Fiaz Satti, Brigadier Hafeez-uddin and Major General Ahmed Bilal belonged to my class. Afia Matin, our class mate who later moved to Bangladesh, married Muhammad Abdul Matin who rose to the rank of Major General in the Bangladesh army. Amin Hashim, Mazhar Billa and Aziz Ansari retired as Lieutenant Colonels of Pakistan army. Late Nadeem Kausar and Babar Ramzan reached the rank of Major in the Pakistan army. I was the only one who joined the Pakistan Air Force. Irfan Malik, Khalid Iqbal, Sharaft Abbas and Abrar Ahmed are some prominent business people of Pakistan. Sirs Iqbal, Mahmood, Kiani and Shah were some of the dedicated and talented teachers who, besides their respective subjects, taught us the meaning of life. Madams Naqvi and Surraya were efficient teachers who commanded our respect and love.

Book on Allama Mashriqi’s Family
ne of Allama Mashriqi’s sons was killed, three were arrested, and the lives of his young daughters were threatened. This book profiles these unsung heroes of the Indian subcontinent’s independence. Allama Mashriqi’s Sons & Daughters: British India’s Young Freedom Fighters, author Nasim Yousaf’s (Allama Mashriqi’s grandson) sixteenth book, has been published in the United States of America. The book profiles the stories of Allama Mashriqi’s sons and daughters, who fought for the freedom of the Indian sub-continent (now Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh). Like Mashriqi, these individuals made great sacrifices for the nation in order to end the British Raj. The newly published book is a compelling read that sheds light on these heroes. The book is bound to draw considerable interest not only from researchers, students, and aca-
demics of South Asian studies, but also any individual interested in the history of the Indian sub-continent. The book is available in both print (hardcover) and electronic formats (accessible globally via Kindle, phone, and other devices). Book Description (from back cover): Allama Mashriqi led the freedom movement of the Indian sub-continent (now comprised of Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan) and liberated his people from British rule in 1947. Mashriqi was a force to be reckoned with, which is evidenced by the Government’s aggressive efforts to try and stop him; during the independence struggle, Mashriqi was arrested at least six times, his movements were restricted at least twice, his organization (including Al-Islah journal) was banned, and his followers were killed. Furthermore, he endured physical attacks, harassments and threats. And perhaps worst of
all, Mashriqi’s sons were arrested and one was “murdered in cold blood” and became a martyr (over 50,000 people attended his funeral). Meanwhile, his daughters and wives faced death threats from those seeking to damage Mashriqi. Indeed, Mashriqi’s family was incredibly devoted to him and also made deep sacrifices for the cause. Following in the footsteps of their father, Mashriqi’s sons and daughters were on the front lines in the fight for independence. This work, by a grandson of Mashriqi, focuses on Mashriqi’s children’s personal lives, their fight for freedom, and their sacrifices for the cause. The book contains articles on Mashriqi’s sons and daughters from his first wife (Wilayat Begum): Hameedah Begum (daughter), Ikramullah Khan Anwar (son), Mehmudah Begum (daughter), Ehsanullah Khan Aslam (martyred son), Masuda Yousaf (daughter), Ina-
mullah Khan Akram (son), and Inayatullah Khan Asghar (son). The work also includes additional memoirs on Wilayat Begum and Professor Meraj-ud-Din (Mashriqi’s fatherin-law). About the Author: Mr. Nasim Yousaf, a grandson of Allama Mashriqi, has spent a considerable portion of his adult life engaged in academic research on Allama Mashriqi and the Khaksar Tehrik
Producers hope to begin shooting the film next year. Franzoni and producer Stephen Joel Brown were in Istanbul last week to meet with Rumi experts and visited the mystic’s mausoleum in Konya. “It’s a very exciting project — and obviously challenging,” Franzoni said. “There are a lot of reasons we’re making a product like this right now. I think it’s a world that needs to be spoken to; Rumi is hugely popular in the United States. I think it gives him a face and a story.” Rumi’s encounter with the enigmatic mystic Shams of Tabriz, believed to have occurred in 1244, altered the course of his life. After Shams’s mysterious disappearance, an ag-
grieved Rumi wrote much of the love poetry that he is widely known for in the west — couplets that endure in pocketbook versions of his writings, which have made him a bestselling poet in the US. Franzoni and Brown said they would like Leonardo DiCaprio to play Rumi, and Robert Downey Jr to star as Shams of Tabriz, though they said it was too early to begin casting. “This is the level of casting that we’re talking about,” said Brown. The film will focus on Rumi’s teachings as well as his encounter with Shams, while giving prominence to Kimya, the poet’s outspoken daughter who some scholars believe may have married Shams.

Rumi film to challenge Muslim stereotypes
LONDON: scar-winning screenwriter David Franzoni said a biopic about the 13th-century poet Jalaluddin AlRumi aims to challenge the stereotypical portrayal of Muslim characters in western cinema. Franzoni, who wrote the script for the 2000 blockbuster “Gladiator,” has agreed to work on the film on the great Sufi scholar. “He’s like a Shakespeare,” Franzoni told The Guardian. “He’s a character who has enormous talent and worth to his society and his people, and obviously resonates today. Those people are always worth exploring.”

Former Pakistan army chief Raheel Sharif to lead ‘Muslim Nato’
lood of criticism greets general’s appointment as commander of Saudi-led Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism Pakistan’s retired army chief has agreed to become the first commander of the “Muslim Nato”, a fledgling military alliance of mostly Sunni Islamic states led bySaudi Arabia. The announcement led to a flood of criticism of Raheel Sharif, a general who until recently had been lauded for his three years leading Pakistan’s half a million-strong army. The Pakistani defence minister, Khawaja Asif, revealed on television that Sharif would become the first commander-inchief of the Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT), a proposed coalition of 39 countries that will have its headquarters in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The IMAFT was announced in late 2015 as a foil against Islamic State and terrorism in general but it has not been supported by Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional nemesis. Islamabad has long struggled to find a balance between Saudi Arabia, a rich
patron that is home to thousands of Pakistani expatriate workers, and neighbouring Iran that hopes to sell gas to energy-starved Pakistan. Analysts say the decades-long standoff between Sunni Saudi Arabia and predominantly Shia Iran has helped fuel sectarian conflict in Pakistan. Both countries have been accused of supporting their own favoured militant groups in Pakistan, where the Shia minority has been the target of relentless attacks. In 2015, Pakistan declined to join military operations against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen despite relentless pressure from Saudi Arabia, which has led the intervention in its impoverished neighbour. The decision not to come to the aid of a close ally that a year earlier had bolstered Pakistan’s finances with a $1.5bn gift was widely praised by analysts who feared involvement in Yemen would exacerbate sectarian tensions at home. But the plan to allow one of the most esteemed army chiefs in Pakistan’s history to take up command of IMAFT has
been met with widespread criticism on social media. The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, a Shia political group, expressed concern over the appointment, which it urged Sharif to turn down. Some hardline Sunni groups, including the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, said they fully supported the development. Hasan Askari Rizvi, a Pakistani defence analyst, cautioned that the IMAFT was not yet operational and it was unclear whether it would follow the model of Nato or something more like the United Nation’s peacekeeping operations. “But there is a question of how far this force would be a non-partisan force,” he said. “At the moment it appears to be dominated by conservative Arab kingdoms so Iran, Iraq and Syria will not welcome it.” He cautioned against Pakistan being dragged into conflicts at the behest of others. “Pakistani troops have been in Saudi Arabia since the mid-1960s but the guiding principle has always been that they would serve only within the territo-

On Jan 12, The Pakistan Consulate General office Vancouver arranged a meeting with BC’s Pakistani community members meeting with the deputy speaker of National assembly of Pakistan Mr. Murtaza Javed Abbasi at Gulberg Fine Cuisine in Surrey. Mr. Abbasi was on a private visit in Vancouver for 6 days. In 2013, he won the seat of MNA, NA-18 (Abbottabad-II) once again by defeating PTI candidate Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob. Consul General of Pakistan Dr. Mohammad Tarik and Consul Mr. Fahad Amjad were the hosts of this dinner. Prominent community members, Pakistani Associations and Pakistani Print, electronic media and PTI BC Chapter were invited to meet the Deputy Speaker of national assembly. Before the dinner, many current issues of Pakistan were discussed with Mr. Murtaza Javed Abbasi. Topics included the economics, Loans taken by Pakistan, CPEC, Panama Leaks,
Dawn Leaks, Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf’s tough opposition to the Muslim League (N) Government rather than friendly opposition in past, Infrastructure, law and order situation, Health, Education, crisis in Karachi and other cities and comparison in development. The arguments were heated on many policies of PML (N). Mr. Abbasi defended Nawaz Sharif Government policies and compared from 1999-2013 development in Pakistan with PML(N)development in all over Pakistan, in shape of Infrastructure, Mega Power projects, Gawadar CPEC , Motor ways etc .but community members were not satisfied with the corruption in Government and prioritization of common man issues. Dr. Tarik rounded up this discussion saying that in his almost 3 years experience working in Vancouver, his efforts at this point have been to bring all Pakistani Associations at one platform to show the unity at large scale on public events like August 14th Jashan
e Azaidi, but he has not succeeded yet. So if we are not united at a small scale outside of Pakistan then how we can expect all political parties in Pakistan will unite on one agenda. At the end Mr. Murtaza Javed Abbasi thanked everyone for their time and discussed their concerns with him and their support for Pakistan including through foreign remittance.

Fifa votes to expand World Cup to 48 teams from 2026
Fifa approved a 48-team 2026 World Cup with “one hundred per cent unanimity”, a confederation president has claimed. In the face of fierce opposition to expansion from European clubs, Victor Montagliani, the head of Concacaf, said: “The decision was made on the facts and the figures, not on, hey, a wink and a nod. Maybe the time has come when we don’t do things on a wink and a nod anymore.” Fifa’s 37-member Council waved through a scheme for 16 groups of three, with more countries from each of the six confederations. But Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president, said penalty shoot-outs in group-stage games may not be approved until “two years” before the 2026 tournament, which could be jointly hosted by America, Canada and Mexico. An alternative, Infantino said, would be for finishing positions in groups to be decided on “rankings”. Spain’s La Liga president Javier Tebas told L’Equipe: “Infantino behaves like [Sepp] Blatter. He also made decisions alone without consulting anyone about them and I’m very angry. It is easy to expand this competition without having to pay the players.
The football industry is maintained thanks to clubs and leagues, not Fifa.” The ECA said in a statement: “We fail to see the merits to changing the current format of 32 that has proven to be the perfect formula from all perspectives. Questionable is also the urgency in reaching such an important decision, with nine years to go until it becomes applicable, without the proper involvement of stakeholders who will be impacted by this change. “We understand that this decision has been taken based on political reasons rather than sporting ones and under considerable political pressure, something ECA believes is regrettable.” The Football Association is said to be resigned to the change. Infantino, who stood on a manifesto of World Cup expansion, said here in Zurich: “We have to shape the football World Cup on the 21st century. It’s not any more the 20th century. It is the future. We have to look into that. Football is more than just South America. Football is global.” He also rejected German opposition: “Whatever format you have, Germany will be there. But for many other countries it is a chance in-
deed to qualify. It is a chance to participate. It is one month every four years and the one month doesn’t get longer. It stays in the same 32 days. “In Germany I hope that with time we can discuss it and they can see the benefit for the world, bearing in mind that in Germany today there are many many players in the Bundesliga from all around the world, and it’s nice for these players as well to maybe have the possibility to participate once in their lifetime in the biggest event in the world.” Montagliani, who represents North, Central American and Caribbean football associations, dismissed the possibility of political complications from a Donald trump-led America co-operating with Mexico. “I’m a football guy, not a politician,” Montagliani said. “The only thing I would say from afar is Trump is a big sports guy. I think he’s proven that in the past. So you would hope that football – no pun intended – would trump politics.” Scotland was one of the first minor nations to publicly approve expansion. Their chief executive, Stewart Regan, said: “This will also allow these nations to invest further in their footballing in-
frastructure and youth development, which in turn can yield significant social benefits. “The exploits of Wales, Iceland, and Northern Ireland at Euro 2016 showed what an impact the smaller teams can have, and how beneficial to a tournament their participation can be. A greater eclectic mix of footballing cultures at the Fifa World Cup will create a bigger and better atmosphere than ever before.” Infantino said as much as $1 billion in extra revenue would go into “football development” - but was not specific. The pressure group NewFIFANow were also hostile, arguing: “It will dilute the competitiveness of the tournament and, therefore, the enjoyment of fans. “It will not help development of the game or provide improved competitive opportunities for lower-ranked nations. Instead, it will make a mockery of the qualification process for most confederations. “It is a money grab and power grab. The aim is to increase revenue in order to fund the extravagant election promises of the Fifa President, Gianni Infantino, as well as to consolidate Infantino’s personal position. Source: Telegraph
West Indies’ proposed tour to Pakistan for two T20Is in mid-March is off the table, multiple sources have confirmed to ESPNcricinfo. The WICB rejected the PCB’s proposal for the tour after receiving advice on security from the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations. The WICB has also cancelled an expected security recce, which was planned for later this month. The two boards, however, continue to discuss the possibility of two T20 internationals in Florida on March 19 and 20. It is understood that earlier this week the West Indies Players Association wrote to FICA, seeking advice on the current security situation in Pakistan. FICA reportedly gave WIPA the latest security advisory from its security consultants, Eastern Star International, who provide security for various
international boards including the ECB, Cricket Australia, New Zealand Cricket and the ICC. In the report, FICA warned that the risk level in Pakistan remains “at an extremely elevated state” and that “an acceptable level of participant security and safety cannot be expected or guaranteed”. Earlier this month, FICA’s report on player safety and security strongly discouraged players from traveling to Lahore for the Pakistan Super League final, scheduled for March 5. According to the proposal, Lahore was likely to host the two matches on March 18 and 19, followed by two matches in Florida, which are still being discussed and are likely to go ahead. On Wednesday, the WICB released the schedule of Pakistan’s seven-week tour of the Caribbean, beginning from March, which
comprises two T20Is, three ODIs and three Tests across five venues. As per the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP), four Tests had been originally slated for this series, but one Test was dropped from the itinerary to accommodate the proposed tour of Pakistan and the T20Is in the USA. West Indies are the third team - after Ireland and Sri Lanka - to reject travelling to Pakistan in the last two years. In 2015, Zimbabwe became the first the first Test-playing nation to tour Pakistan since 2009, when an attack on the Sri Lankan team bus resulted in the suspension of international cricket from Pakistan. The ICC, however, had refused to send its match officials for the series. The PCB appointed its own match officials, and hoped the Zimbabwe series would serve as a stepping stone to reviv-
ing international cricket in the country. That ambition, however, suffered a setback when a suicide attack took place near the Gaddafi Stadium during the second ODI. Zimbabwe, though, played the third and final ODI two days later and completed the tour. The PCB remains firm in its plan to host the Pakistan Super League final in Lahore on March 5, and has drawn up contingency plans to replace those overseas players unwilling to travel to the country due to security reasons. The board has decided to hold a new draft in the last week of February to bring in foreign players who will be willing to travel to Pakistan in place of those who will opt out. Source: Cricinfo
