Britain OKs Pfizer vaccine and will begin shots within days

ONDON -- Britain became the first country in the world to authorize a rigorously tested COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday and could be dispensing shots within days -- a historic step toward eventually ending the outbreak that has killed more than 1.4 million people around the globe. In giving the go-ahead for emergency use of the vaccine developed by American drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech, Britain vaulted past the United States by at least a week. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is not scheduled to consider the vaccine until Dec. 10. “This is a day to remember, frankly, in a year to forget,” British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said. The announcement sets the stage for the biggest vaccination campaign

in British history and came just ahead of what experts are warning will be a long, dark winter, with the coronavirus surging to epic levels in recent weeks in the U.S. and Europe. Officials cautioned that several tough months still lie ahead even in Britain, given the monumental task of inoculating large swaths of the population. Because of the limited initial supply, the first shots will be reserved for those most in danger, namely nursing home patients, the elderly and health care workers. Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency recommended the vaccine after clinical trials involving tens of thousands of volunteers showed it was 95% effective and turned up no serious side To be Continued at page 7

n a 46-minute speech from the White House posted to social media, Donald Trump accused Democrats of ‘stealing’ the US election. President Donald Trump delivered his lengthiest call to overturn the United States election results Wednesday, repeating a litany of debunked conspiracy theories as reasons to deny President-elect Joe Biden a victory. During a 46-minute speech from the White House, posted to Facebook, Trump insisted on challenging what he says is “pervasive fraud” surrounding the election, calling it a “national disgrace” and accusing Democrats of “stealing” the election. “The constitutional process must be allowed to continue. We are going to defend the honesty of the vote by ensuring that every legal ballot is counted and that no illegal ballot is counted,” he said. “If we are right about the fraud, Joe Biden can’t be president,” Trump said about allegations of fraud that have been investigated and determined to be false and tossed out of courtrooms. Trump’s own US Attorney General William Barr said after asking the Justice Department and the FBI to look into fraud claims that fraud does not exist “on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election”. Trump’s video was flagged as “disputed” on Twitter and tagged with a label on Facebook that states “Joe Biden is the projected winner” of the election. His speech comes a day after he acknowledged at a White House holiday reception that he may have lost the election.“It’s been an amazing four years,” Trump told the crowd. “We’re trying to do

another four years. Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.” The video of Trump’s holiday reception appearance Tuesday was streamed live on Facebook by an attendee, the Associated Press news agency reported. At the holiday party, Trump also ran down the list of baseless allegations of election fraud. “It’s certainly an unusual year. We won an election. But they don’t like that,” Trump told the group, adding: “I call it a rigged election, and I always will.” As Trump continues rallying his supporters around the idea that the election was illegitimate, Republicans in Georgia, where there are two runoff elections on January 5 that will determine which party controls the US Senate, are growing concerned that Trump voters there will not turn out to vote next month. Complicating matters are Trump backers who are aggressively calling for Georgia voters to “boycott” the elections. Attorneys Sidney Powell, who briefly worked on Trump’s post-election legal team, and Lin Wood held a rally on Wednesday where they not only demanded voters boycott the runoffs, but To be Continued at page 7

Former PM Zafarullah Jamali passes away at 76

Former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali passed away at a hospital in Rawalpindi at the age of 76 on Wednesday evening, his relative Senator Sana Jamali confirmed. Jamali, who served as the premier from November 2002 until June 2004, was shifted to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology & National Institute of Heart Diseases (AFICNIHD) in Rawalpindi after suffering a heart attack last week. For the last few days, he had been put on a ventilator in the Critical Care Unit of the hospital. The details of his funeral have not been issued as yet. Jamali, the country’s first and only elected prime minister from Balochistan, had served during the military regime of Gen Pervez Musharraf. However, Gen Musharraf sought his resignation in 2004 and he was replaced by Shaukat Aziz. He won the 2013 general elections as an independent, but later joined the PML-N and used to sit on the treasury benches in the previous assembly. The PML-N leadership had issued a showcause notice to Jamali in October 2017 when he did not vote in line with the party’s policy

on the bill allowing Nawaz Sharif to assume the office of the party president despite his disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case. Jamali resigned from the National Assembly only days before the completion of the assembly’s term, citing health concerns. He was opposed to the PML-N policy of having confrontation with the judiciary Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed “heartfelt condolences” on the former premier’s demise. “May Allah bless his soul & give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss,” an Inter-Services Public Relations tweet quoted him as saying. Imran slams PDM rallies amid spike in Covid cases

I• Says ‘stress’ root cause of diseases in reference to Dar’s interview • Vows speedy work for grant of new status to GB • Congratulates members of cabinet at oath-taking ceremony • Two national parks, formation of Park Service Nigahbaans announced GILGIT: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said the opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is adamant about holding public rallies despite the mounting pressure of coronavirus patients at hospitals. “Everyone knows coronavirus spreads when people gather, as doctors and nurses are saying that burden of patients has increased at hospitals with as many as 70 deaths in a single day, yet the PDM is holding public meetings against the government only to hide their illgotten money,” said Prime Minister Khan on Wednesday during his second visit to Gilgit in over a month.Mr Khan, who had earlier addressed a public gathering in Gilgit two weeks before the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, congratulated the new GB cabinet members at their oath-taking ceremony held at GB Governor House. The prime minister said whatever they (opposition parties) were doing was an attempt

to protect their ill-gotten gains. However, lies cannot remain concealed for long, Mr Khan said. “To hide one lie, you have to say a hundred more.” The official news agency quoted the PM as saying that the corruption scandals of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were unearthed through the Panama Papers despite having appointed their crony as National Accountability Bureau (NAB) head and signing Charter of Democracy with the rival party. While referring to the ex-finance minister Ishaq Dar interview by BBC host Stephen Sackur where he (Dar) was visibly under immense stress for facing questions about his assets and return to Pakistan, Mr Khan said stress was the root cause of all major diseases including heart, blood pressure and even cancer. “What is the benefit of such wealth that brings destruction upon you and your family?” he said, adding that a person who illegally made money for his children as well as those same children eventually had to lie to save such wealth.“Sometimes they go to jail. Sometimes they go abroad after lying — all in an effort to save stolen money,” Mr Khan remarked.Source: dawn.com

Britain’s Prince Charles and Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday reaffirmed the close relationship between the UK and Pakistan and discussed the response to the coronavirus pandemic. The conversation between the Prince of Wales and the prime minister took place during a telephone call. “They reaffirmed the close and unique bonds between the two commonwealth nations including how the UK and Pakistan show the best of international friendship,” a statement issued by a spokesperson for the British High Commission said. During the call, Prince Charles conveyed his condolences for the lives lost in Pakistan due to Covid-19. The UK is providing essential support “to some of the most vulnerable in Pakistan” during the pandemic, the press release said. Britain, which is battling Europe’s deadliest Covid-19 outbreak, on Wednesday became one of the first countries to begin vaccinating its population after it authorised the Covid-19 vaccine developed by American drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech

for emergency use. Pakistan, meanwhile, hopes to procure a Covid-19 vaccine in the first quarter of 2021. The government has set aside $150 million for the purpose and suggested it will be open to tapping more than one source “including Western and Chinese manufacturers”. During their conversation, Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and Prime Minister Imran also agreed on the need for greater global cooperation in dealing with shared global challenges especially on climate change and protecting the environment, according to the statement. The UK is hosting COP26, or the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, next year and Prince Charles “welcomed Pakistan‘s resolve on tackling the threat of Climate Change, reaffirming the UK’s support for increased use of renewable energy in Pakistan”.Source: dawn.com

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is likely to summon Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz vice president Maryam Nawaz in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case after it has ‘paced up’ investigation related to her role. The NAB Lahore has sought a written statement from Saif Bin Jabr Al Suwaidi, who had been appearing as a majority shareholder since 1999 till 2008 in the CSM. “Maryam Nawaz is likely to be summoned and quizzed in the light of the statement of Al Suwaidi, chairman Bin Jabr Group United Arab Emirates, and other evidence by NAB in the

investigation of CSM in which she is the major beneficiary,” an official source told Dawn on Wednesday.Maryam, daughter of former premier Nawaz Sharif, has been on bail in the CSM case since November last year. The PML-N workers and police had clashed in August last outside the NAB Lahore office where Maryam Nawaz had arrived to record her statement in a case related to “illegal” acquisition of land in Raiwind. The investigation in this case has been pending since then and the NAB has yet to re-summon her in it. In the letter to Mr Suwaidi, NAB said: “Since you had been appearing as a majority shareholder between 1999 and 2008 in the CSM which is owned by former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family members. Narrate the nature of your financial relationship with Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and any other member of the Sharif family. Did you make any investment in the CSM for purchase of 9.4 million shares? Did Nawaz Sharif or any member of his family make any investment with you in the UAE.” Source: dawn.com

Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar, the chief of the military’s media wing, has said that India is engaged in a massive campaign of ‘fifthgeneration warfare’ to obstruct Pakistan’s road to prosperity mainly through targeting the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Pakistan’s international image. Appearing in a wide-ranging interview on Global Village Space published on Thursday, he termed misinformation campaigns against Pakistan on social media as a “major challenge”, but said the country was countering these through transparency and putting out credible information. “Unfortunately, it’s a major onslaught, it’s a major part of the fifth-generation warfare. Pakistan is being subjected to […] hybrid applications in a massive way and we are

aware of that,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) director general said. When prompted to cite a specific incident of such an attempt, he mentioned the recent explosion in a Karachi building which was framed as a “civil war” in India as an example of irresponsible reporting. “In doing so, the Indian media has lost its credibility to quite an extent and the whole world is recognising that,” he said. He said in his understanding, fifth-generation warfare was the Indian state using all elements of its national power to systemically focus on and attempt to destabilise certain domains in Pakistan. He listed these domains as Pakistan’s economy, information system, army and international image, for which he cited the example of Indian lobbying in the Financial Action Task Force

meetings to discredit Pakistan. When asked about how such attempts were countered, Maj Gen Iftikhar stated: “Best way to handle this is transparency, […] not leaving information voids and […] passing on credible information.”He also brought up Pakistan’s practical action in the international arena to bring attention to Indian designs by submitting a dossier on Indian state-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan to the United Nations Secretary General. According to Maj Gen Iftikhar, the dossier and its proofs had been taken seriously at the international level and objectively analysed which had vindicated Pakistan’s stance. The ISPR chief also highlighted that Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s military diplomacy and forays to reach out to

the armies of the region and beyond had yielded considerable advantages for Pakistan. Note was made of success in this regard with China, Russia and the Gulf states. “The outreach whether for training or other exchanges or defence equipment has been very positive,” Maj Gen Iftikhar said. Dangerously urgent pressure on Pakistan to normalize ties

Dear friends, sisters, brothers, and comrades in the struggle for peace and justice: We hope this finds all of you well and safe. The Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC)-Pakistan is deeply distressed at the way in which the US and the Gulf countries are putting immense pressure, threatening deportation of Pakistan laborers, etc., if Pakistan does not follow their lead and normalize relations with Israel. This is unacceptable for us, as we are relentlessly campaigning with human rights groups here to condemn the harsh Israeli military occupation of the Palestinians. In this time of the urgent and immediate possible capitulation to DC and the Saudis and the Emiratis, we have created this emergency global petition to present to Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan. He is very much cornered right now (having stated numerous times that he will refuse to bow down to the pressure to normalize ties with Israel), and we hope this petition will tip the favor in his position of rejecting any normalization process

with Israel until the military occupation ends, and there is justice for Palestinians -- no matter what the traditional military-political establishment in Pakistan says or desires. As trusted comrades of ours in this struggle for the dignity of Palestinians, we hope you can sign this petition immediately so that we can halt this dangerous and suicidal path our country may be forced to undertake.

Here is the petition: http://chng.it/ HywZmX8NV8

Please, please do kindly sign and forward widely to get maximum support for this urgent issue which, if not halted, would lead to an unmitigated disaster for the Palestine Solidarity Movement here in Pakistan. In solidarity and with warm regards, Sarah Moin, National Director of the PSC-Pakistan Elzabeth Patel, Global Palestine Solidarity Coordinator-Pakistan Junaid S. Ahmad,

Pakistan are of course very capable and intelligent, but they’re not making more progress than they should in terms of poverty reduction and inequality.” Perhaps, he forgot that nowdefeated terrorists again were trying to create hurdle in our socio-economic progress. Prime Minister Imran Khan will have to deal strictly with them better use an iron hand to settle account with looters of public money. Now wealthy sections of society may not take time in realising that beneficial change demands, as he said, sacrificing short-term, individual and family interest. The heartening news is that Pakistan is fighting devastating malnutrition with mass food fortifying programme. A programme of fortification of everyday foods such as bread and oil had already been undertaken in an attempt to tackle chronic and widespread malnutrition. One can recall that under a £36 million programme one had seen nutrients added directly to wheat flour, edible oils and ghee at source in mills and factories. This was the first time that staple food was to be fortified across the country which reportedly had some of the worst rates of child malnutrition. The

Open letter to BC Parents from BCTF President Teri Mooring Dear parents, BC’s teachers care deeply about our students, your children. We are all working incredibly hard to make sure they are safe and receiving the best education possible during this terrible pandemic. Nothing about this school year has been easy and all of us are feeling stress and anxiety. We’re worried about COVID-19 affecting our students, our families, and ourselves. Making sure our schools and classrooms are safe for our children and yours has been the top priority for us all. Now, as BC is gripped by this surging second wave of the coronavirus, we’re reaching out to you for some help. While masks are not mandatory at

programme aimed mainly at changing the health of women and children. Prime Minister Imran Khan appears wise enough to look back into the misdoings of the past rulers. He personally asked me to visit Lahore to see people working for the participation of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. I was surprised to see many of them were engaged in self-interest. I had to warn them against doing anything that harmed the national interest. How many political power seekers know that early child bearing reduces a woman’s nutritional status and there are taboos around women eating certain food? For example, they might be told they can’t eat much egg or meat in pregnancy, which in fact are rich in protein and iron that they need. The high levels of malnutrition have a devastating impact on the country’s development. When these children become adults they are more susceptible to communicable diseases, they generate less money for their families. Hence, fighting disastrous malnutrition is must. How many politicians will come forward to work together on this sacred front?

all times in schools, we’re hoping you can help us support a culture of mask wearing. Some schools have already taken this step. The school community has come together and made mask wearing normal and expected. It really helps everyone in our schools feel safer. We need to be doing all we can to ensure we keep each other safe. No one wants to bring COVID-19 home to their families. We know there are students and staff members who for various reasons can’t wear masks. And, there are some learning situations where masks aren’t appropriate. That’s all ok. Our school communities have a lot of experience making sure people are included and treated with kindness and respect. By talking to your children about wearing their masks in school, you can help us create that respectful culture of mask wearing. BCTF members, your children’s teachers, are committed to providing our students with supportive and enriching learning environments. We also need them to be safe. Please help make that happen. We encourage you to talk to your children and encourage them to wear masks. Thank you, Teri Mooring

American Muslims Won 2020 Election

F

BY: ASAD DANDIA, HAMZAH RAZA ew expected to hear this Arabic term for “God willing” uttered on the stage of a live presidential debate, and even fewer expected it’d be used in the niche colloquial manner known to Arab and Muslim communities. But candidate Biden did precisely that, demonstrating the extent to which these communities have made inroads in national public discourse. American Muslims came out in full force to vote for Biden in record numbers, but for many, this was less about Biden or Trump and more about an affirmation that with collective organised power, those at the margins can assert their voices to radically transform the political landscape. The last dozen or so years of political mobilisation among American Muslims - whether through organising, protesting, voting, or other forms of civic engagement - have demonstrated that the community is now a force to be reckoned with, though it was not without difficulty. In 2008, during then-Senator Barack Obama’s campaign trail for presidency, rightwing punditry pejoratively labeled him a Muslim in an effort to publicly malign him, with Rush Limbaugh even referring to him as “Imam Hussein Obama,” leading Obama to over emphasise his Christianity to distance himself from the Muslim label. In a June rally, Obama’s campaign even removed two Muslim women from behind his podium because they were wearing hijabs so that they would not be seen in any photos with him. Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign capitalised on anti-Muslim sentiment as well, by releasing a picture of Obama wearing Somali cultural clothing while on a visit to Northeast Kenya. After Obama became president, his engagement with the American Muslim community often only served to reinforce the notion of Muslims as a problem. During the annual White House iftar in 2014, Obama took the opportunity to assert Israel’s “right

to defend itself ” as bombs fell on the Gaza Strip resulting in the death of 550 Palestinian children in 51 days. In her 2016 campaign for president, Clinton did not change the discourse by much when she stated that the United States government must “work with American Muslim communities who are on the front lines to identify and prevent attacks.” Once Trump came into office, American Muslims were no longer given to pretensions of support from above and galvanized their grassroots on the ground in unprecedented ways. This time, Muslims were going to punctuate their place in politics on their own terms. The day after Trump’s 2017 inauguration came the Women’s March, the largest single-day protest in American history, organised by Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian American Muslim woman and others. Six days later, Donald Trump passed Executive Order 13769, his first iteration of the ‘Muslim Ban.’ In response, American Muslims and their allies flooded the airports in protest, and as the world watched, they offered prayers in public as a demonstration of resilience against Trump’s bigotry. In a country where the president had once asserted that “Islam hates us,” American Muslims demonstrated that Islam was not just a symbol of indefatigable resistance, but a force of radical love. Just a few weeks into the Trump presidency, American Muslims were already winning. A year later came the 2018 midterms. An exciting set of Democrat lawmakers ushered their way into the White House, including Ilhan Omar, the first Black Muslim and hijab-wearing congresswoman, and Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian American congresswoman. Alexandria OcasioCortez’s upset of Joe Crowley, a pillar of the Democratic establishment, was also made

possible by Muslim political advocacy groups in New York City, such as Muslims for Progress. As these lawmakers made their way into Congress, they drastically shifted the conversation on crucial issues for the American Muslim community. Most recently, American Muslims showed up strongly in key swing states, namely Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, where Biden’s victories would not have been possible without their organising. Michigan is home to some of the most historic Muslim communities in the country with heavy Muslim populations in two major cities - Dearborn and Detroit - that arguably drove the vote in Biden’s favour. Dearborn is home to thousands of Lebanese, Iraqi, and Yemeni communities who can trace their roots in America as far back as the 1870s, and Detroit is home to Mosque Number 1, the first mosque of the Nation of Islam, founded in 1930. Detroit has remained the home of a historic and sizable Black Muslim community that mobilised to vote. Minnesota is another swing state in which Trump promised a resounding victory. Home to the largest Somali diaspora in the country, it is estimated that there are nearly 100,000 Somali speakers in the state. It is also home to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who Trump repeatedly attacked on the campaign trail. He condemned her as unpopular and an extremist who would help him get votes in Minnesota. As of now, it is estimated that Biden beat Trump by 233,400 votes in Minnesota. Interestingly enough, Ilhan Omar received 255,811 votes in her election. As opposed to being a hindrance, it was actually her district, with a sizeable Somali Muslim population, that put Biden over. Georgia has long been a bastion of Blackled movements for centuries, with Black Muslims playing a central and essential role in that history. It also has a sizeable Arab and South Asian Muslim population and is home to a growing community of refugees from Syria and Somalia. In 2015, the Muslims of Georgia founded the Georgia Muslim Voter Project, a grassroots initiative aimed at activating Muslim political participation in response to increased anti-Muslim bigotry and low rates of civic engagement. Since then, the initia-

tive has made nearly 22,000 phone calls and registered voters in over 50 mosques. It is safe to say that turning Georgia blue would not have been possible without Muslim voters. Pennsylvania is another state where Biden’s victory would not have been possible without the Muslim community, especially Black Muslims. The city of Philadelphia alone is home to between 150,000 - 200,000 Muslims, most of whom are Black Americans. This has led many to hail it as the “Mecca of the West.” Beyond just the sheer numbers of Muslims, Islam in Philadelphia has left an indelible mark on the city’s culture, particularly among Black Americans. Styles such as the “Philly beard” or the “Sunni beard” are even popular among non-Muslims. It is likely that Trump’s anti-Black racism and anti-Muslim bigotry were deeply personal to Philadelphia’s hundreds of thousands of Muslims, their friends, and their families, leading to an outpouring of votes that were so critical to Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania. As Trump hurls bombast in his inability to cope with the fact that he lost, it is important to reflect on the American Muslim voters and organisers throughout the country that made Biden’s victory possible. Trump’s election night was a defeat, but ultimately, his entire four years were a set of defeats. From the Women’s March to protests at airports opposing the Muslim Ban to the 2018 midterms to election night, American Muslims won. Beyond that, they won the Trump presidency. And as President-Elect Biden enters office in January 2021, American Muslims will be better situated to take on whatever challenges come their way and will join arms with other communities in building the world we all wish to see. Trump expected to flex pardon Hundreds of Ethiopian immigrants powers on way out door get warm welcome in Israel

WASHINGTON -- Advocates and lawyers anticipate a flurry of clemency action from U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming weeks that could test the limits of presidential pardon power. Trump is said to be considering a slew of pardons and commutations before he leaves office, including potentially members of his family, former aides and even himself. While it is not unusual for presidents to sign controversial pardons on their way out the door, Trump has made clear that he has no qualms about intervening in the cases of friends and allies whom he believes have been treated unfairly, including his former national security adviser Michael Flynn. The list of potential candidates is long and colorful: Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, imprisoned for financial crimes as part of the Russia investigation; George Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, just like Flynn; Joseph MaldonadoPassage, aka “Joe Exotic,” who starred in the the Netflix series “Tiger King”; and former contractors convicted in a Baghdad firefight that killed more than a dozen civilians, including women and children. Trump, long worried about potential legal exposure after he leaves office, has expressed worry to confidants in recent weeks that he, his family or his business might be targeted by President-elect Joe Biden’s Justice Department, although Biden has made clear he

won’t be part of any such decisions. Nonetheless, Trump has had informal conversations with allies about how he might be able to protect his family, though he has not taken any steps to do so. His adult children haven’t requested pardons nor do they feel they need them, according to people familiar with the discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private matters. Trump has also discussed potentially shielding himself, The New York Times first reported. In a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday, he made a glancing reference to his potential vulnerabilities. ”Now I hear that these same people that failed to get me in Washington have sent every piece of information to New York so that they can try to get me there,” he said. The speculation prompted a slew of preemptive pushback from critics. Source: aljazeera.com

BEN-GURION INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ISRAEL -- Hundreds of Ethiopian immigrants arrived on Thursday to a festive ceremony at Israel’s international airport, as the government took a step toward carrying out its pledge to reunite hundreds of families split between the two countries. Some 300 people landed on the Ethiopian Airlines flight, with many waving flags or stopping to kiss the ground as they streamed off the aircraft onto a red carpet. Many were dressed in traditional Ethiopian robes, and many women held babies in their arms. Festive Hebrew songs were blasted over loudspeakers.Although the families are of Jewish descent and many are practicing Jews, Israel does not consider them Jewish under religious law. Instead, they were permitted to enter the country under a family-unification program that requires special government approval. A large delegation of Israeli officials welcomed the group, and Pnina Tamano-Shata, the country’s first Ethiopian-born Cabinet minister, travelled to Ethiopia to join them on the flight. “My wife Sara and myself were standing there with tears in our eyes,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a welcoming ceremony. “This is the essence of our Jewish story, the essence of the Zionist story.” Community activists have accused the gov-

ernment of dragging its feet in implementing a 2015 decision to bring all remaining Ethiopians of Jewish lineage to Israel within five years. Netanyahu’s Likud party repeated that pledge before national elections early this year.Activists for Ethiopian Aliyah, a group promoting family unification, estimates that some 7,000 Ethiopian Jews remain behind in Ethiopia, some of whom have been waiting for years to join their families.“Once again, the government led by Prime Minister Netanyahu has decided to place quotas on the immigration of Jews from Ethiopia,” said Muket Fenta, an activist who has been fighting for over a decade to bring his aunt to Israel.“The government is celebrating a few hundred immigrants from Ethiopia, while thousands were supposed to be here and are still left behind while their fate is in question,” he said. China successfully lands spacecraft Israel sends the Palestinians more than on moon to retrieve lunar rocks a billion dollars in withheld funds

China successfully landed a spacecraft on the moon’s surface on Tuesday in a historic mission to retrieve lunar surface samples, Chinese state media reported. China launched its Chang’e-5 probe on November 24. The uncrewed mission, named after the mythical Chinese goddess of the moon, aims to collect lunar material to help scientists learn more about the moon’s origins. The mission will attempt to collect two kilogrammes of samples in a previously unvisited area in a massive lava plain known as Oceanus Procellarum, or “Ocean of Storms”. If the mission is completed as planned, it would make China the third nation to have retrieved lunar samples after the United States and the Soviet Union. The Israeli government has transferred over a billion dollars to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), as confirmed by the Minister of Civil Affairs, Hussein al-Sheikh, on his Twitter account. The minister guaranteed that “the Israeli government has transferred all financial quotas of the settlement to the account of the Palestinian Authority, amounting to three billion and 768 million shekels”. This amount comes from the taxes collected in the name of Palestine by the state of Israel. This transfer means the resumption of the coordination between the two after being interrupted for half a year. In May, the Palestinians stopped coordinating with Israel in response to the Israeli plans to annex parts of the West Bank. However, Israel’s plans for annexation were postponed in September following the normalisation of relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain through the Abraham Agreements. This is not the first time Palestine has cut off cooperation with its neighbour. Last year the Palestinian leadership had already rejected the funds raised by Israel in protest against the implementation of an Israeli law that withholds a proportional part of the amount, as it considers that the Palestinians allocate part of this money to pay their

prisoners in Israeli jails, some of whom have committed blood crimes and are considered “terrorists”. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said on Monday that the Palestinians were “entitled” to the funds, which are expected to ease the pressure on the Palestinian economy in the midst of a serious budget crisis. The Palestinian economic situation is delicate, with the PNA having to cut the salaries of its officials, at a time when the country’s economy had begun to deal with the impact of the new coronavirus pandemic. The total amount transferred corresponds to the customs and border funds that Israel has collected over the past 7 months for the PNA. Source: dawn.com

way forward for further discussion but is considered a breakthrough because it will allow negotiators to move on to more substantive issues, including talks on a ceasefire.“The procedure including its preamble of the negotiation has been finalised and from now on, the negotiation will begin on the agenda,” Nader Nadery, a member of the Afghan government’s negotiating team, told Reuters. The Taliban spokesman confirmed the same on Twitter. “A joint working committee was tasked to

prepare the draft topics for the agenda (of peace talks),” a joint statement from both sides said. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, said on Twitter, quoting the Afghan leader: “(The agreement) is a step forward towards beginning the negotiations on the main issues, including a comprehensive ceasefire as the key demand of the Afghan people.” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated the two sides on “perseverance and willingness to find common ground”, and added that the United States would “work hard with all sides in pursuit of a serious reduction of violence and ceasefire”. US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad said that the

two sides had agreed on a “three-page agreement codifing rules and procedures for their negotiations on a political road map and a comprehensive ceasefire”. ‘Springboard to peace’ The agreement comes after months of discussions in Doha, the capital of Qatar, in negotiations encouraged by the United States. In Afghanistan, the two sides are still at war, with Taliban attacks on government forces continuing unabated. The Taliban has refused to agree to a ceasefire during the preliminary stages of talks, despite calls from Western capitals and global bodies, saying that would be taken up only when the way forward for talks was agreed upon. face was one of several spacecraft deployed by the Chang’e-5 probe. Upon landing, the lander vehicle is supposed to drill into the ground with a robotic arm, then transfer its soil and rock samples to an ascender vehicle that would lift off and dock with an orbiting module. State broadcaster CCTV said it would start collecting samples on the lunar surface in the next two days. The samples would be transferred to a return capsule for the trip back to Earth, landing in China’s Inner Mongolia region.China made its first lunar landing in 2013. In January last year, the Chang’e-4 probe touched down on the far side of the moon, the first space probe from any nation to do so.

Afghan gov’t, Taliban announce breakthrough deal in peace talks

Afghan government and Taliban representatives said they have reached a preliminary deal to press on with peace talks, their first written agreement in 19 years of war. The B.C. government will be officially back up and running next week with the swearing-in of new MLAs and the appointment of new cabinet ministers for the NDP majority government. Premier John Horgan said the schedule allows a legislature session to begin Dec. 7, the main business being to get spending authorization for his promised round of pandemic relief payments. MLAs are to be sworn in Tuesday, Nov.

24 and cabinet ministers Nov. 26, in virtual ceremonies with Lt. Gov. Janet Austin. The session will start with “a brief throne speech, talking about of course the fundamental issues of how do we as a community, how do we as a province, address the challenges of COVID-19.” A small number of MLAs will be available in person to vote on borrowing another $1.4 billion to pay most households $1,000 and individuals $500, a

promise made by Horgan in the recent election campaign to counter the B.C. Liberal offer of suspending provincial sales tax for a year. Horgan stopped short of promising payments in time for Christmas, saying only that it is possible if the measure passes the legislature quickly. The plan is to use the records of B.C.’s COVID-19 relief payments sent out this spring, and the province’s income tax records to see who is eligible

for full or partial payment, without an application process. “And then we will distribute those dollars by direct deposit, is the intention,” Horgan said. The payments would be added to B.C.’s ballooning deficit, last forecast to be headed towards $12.8 billion for the fiscal year that ends in March 2021. Source: surreynowleader.com

Chatham House think-tank . Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared that the “searchlights of science” had picked out the “invisible enemy,” which has been blamed for close to 60,000 deaths in Britain. He said that in developing the vaccine, scientists had performed “biological jujitsu” by turning the virus on itself.

Other countries aren’t far behind: Regulators not only in the U.S. but in the European Union and Canada also are vetting the Pfizer vaccine along with a shot made by Moderna. British and Canadian regulators are also considering a vaccine made by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. Amid growing concern in the U.S. that

Americans will greet vaccines with skepticism, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Britain’s decision “should give Americans additional confidence in the quality of such a vaccine.” The virus has killed more than 270,000 in the U.S. Source: ctvnews.ca

Trudeau tells United Nations to address Feds outline plan to administer first COVID-19 COVID-19 inequality amid vaccine advances vaccines, launching ‘dry run’ next week OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the United Nations General Assembly that the world’s fight against COVID-19 doesn’t end with the successful distribution of a vaccine.Trudeau said Thursday the wide inequality between rich and poor countries, which has been made worse by the pandemic, also needs to be dealt with in a coordinated way.Poor countries haven’t been able to increase spending the way developed countries have to blunt the economic hardship the pandemic has caused their citizens, he said. “Of course, our collaboration can’t end at distributing a vaccine. The pandemic has taught us difficult lessons about inequality, both at home and between countries,” the prime minister said Thursday in a recorded video address to more than 100 world leaders and officials during a special session of the assembly on the recovery from COVID-19. Capital Dispatch: Stay up to date on the latest news from Parliament Hill Advanced economies have spent more than 20 per cent of their GDP to support their citizens during the pandemic and developing economies spent eight per cent. “While for the poorest economies, that number was just two per cent,” Trudeau said. The two-day UN session kicks off as the race to develop a pandemic-ending vaccine

is heating up, amid calls for equitable early distribution of the doses. “We stand ready to work with our partners, and to help countries deal with unsustainable debt, recover and rebuild from this global crisis. We cannot let the most vulnerable be left behind,” Trudeau said. “The pandemic has widened inequities and exacerbated humanitarian situations.” He noted Canada’s contributions to the international efforts to distribute vaccines to poorer parts of the world, reiterating one of his core messages that for COVID-19 to be completely controlled, it must be defeated everywhere. Trudeau was to join British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Charles Michel, president of the European Council, who are also addressing the special session.Source: .ctvnews.ca

Premier John Horgan is encouraging British Columbians not to travel for the upcoming holidays, though was not sure when the province will announce any specific restrictions on gathering during that time. At his weekly news conference, Horgan said he expects provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix to update the latest public restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 on Monday. The premier would not say whether he expects the restrictions to continue or whether the next phase of orders will include restrictions around the holidays.

“I am one of those Christmas Eve shoppers. I tend to focus on Christmas 24 hours before it arrives,” Horgan said. “I know there are a lot of families who are concerned about the year we have had and have looked with some hope to the Christmas break and perhaps a celebration to a new year. I can’t give an answer to that now.” The legislature is set to return on Monday for a one- or two-week session, he added. Once MLAs are back, the new NDP majority government is expected to introduce legislation to provide funding for the one-time direct deposit to B.C. families of up to $1,000 based on income to help offset the economic impact of COVID-19. The brief session will also include a speech from the throne, while the province grapples with whether to push back the release of its budget, from February to March, to allow for more time to consider the effects of the pandemic and its second wave. Horgan said the province’s task force on the pandemic’s impact on the tourism sector is expected to release its findings next week. Source: .globalnews.ca

. VANCOUVER -- Another 694 cases of the novel coronavirus have been confirmed in the 24 hours since health officials’ last update on the disease. Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the total Thursday, as well as another 12 deaths. Currently, 325 people are in hospital, and the total number of active cases has reached a record-breaking 9,103. Though not a record, it’s the 10th day in a row that the province has seen a number of deaths in the double digits. With the latest deaths, the toll in the province has risen to 481. Out of the 35,422 total confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, Henry said, 24,928 of those patients are considered to be recovered.Another 10,849 remain under active monitoring, though they are not considered

to be active cases.Henry said 325 people are in hospital with the disease as of Thursday, 80 of which are in intensive care. Henry said 325 people are in hospital with the disease as of Thursday, 80 of which are in intensive care. The doctor said officials know that healthcare workers at long-term care homes and in hospitals are strained and tired, “and we need to do our bit everywhere to make sure that we support and protect them too. “And that is the purpose of the orders that we’ve had in place in B.C. … What we have seen is that when people come together, this virus can spread, now more than ever, particularly as we go through winter in the province.”Updates to the strict and sweeping orders put in place last month are expected Monday. OTTAWA -- The federal government has outlined its initial plans to administer what are being considered Canada’s “Track 1” COVID-19 vaccines—Pfizer and Moderna—in the “coming weeks and months.” This will include a “soft launch” rehearsal of the Pfizer rollout happening next Monday. “We’ll have a dry run in every province, and they will execute, and they’ll ensure that -- without the vaccine of course -- they execute the process of handling and ensuring that people are comfortable with the very unique requirements of handling an ultralow temperature vaccine,” said Maj. Gen. Dany Fortin, who is running Canada’s logistical side of the vaccine effort, on Thursday at a press briefing in Ottawa. Fortin said this is part of planning that’s been ongoing since the spring, to be ready for movement of vaccines from the manufacturers to Canadians. “We’re hard at it in the next couple of weeks to ensure that we are ready, and I kind of like the idea of being ready before the Christmas timeframe, so that we’re certain to be ready when it comes in January,” he said. Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo said that Canada is expecting that these two vaccine candidates—two of the four currently being evaluated by Health Canada for safety—are expected to be “the

earliest through the regulatory gates.” As such, the government has been able to sketch out new details around how the rollout of these vaccines will work, and to organize the orders from each province and territory. On Thursday Fortin explained how the delivery of these two vaccines will happen, “commencing in January.” For Pfizer, because this vaccine needs to be stored at an ultra-low temperature, it is going to be delivered directly by the pharmaceutical giant, first to at least 14 provincial “points of delivery” and then on to the places where it will be administered, as identified by the provinces. From there, dry ice and other freezer requirements will be in place to store the vaccines as health-care workers work to put needles into people’s arms. Pfizer is the only manufacturer that delivers this way.Source: ctvnews.ca

B.C. premier says government determined COVID-19: B.C. premier encourages people to deliver COVID-19 relief payments -- Premier John Horgan says his gatherings to “an absolute minimum.”“At to stay home for upcoming holidays VICTORIA government will be focused on delivering this point, we’ve got to continue to focus on

COVID-19 relief payments to British Columbians once the legislature returns next week. Horgan spoke from Victoria Wednesday, immediately following the first meeting of his new cabinet. The B.C. legislature is set to return to business with a speech from the throne on Monday, Dec. 7. The government’s foremost task upon its return, Horgan said, will be ensuring British Columbians receive the COVID-19 benefit payments the premier promised while campaigning ahead of the Oct. 24 election. The benefit would come in the form of a one-time, $1,000 direct deposit to families whose household income is under $125,000 annually, with a sliding scale up to $175,000.Individuals earning less than $62,000 annually would be eligible for $500, with a sliding scale up to $87,000. “It’s putting dollars into people’s pockets so they can continue to get through the most challenging time that British Columbians have ever known,” Horgan said of the payments.“This is going to be means-tested, it’s going to be low-income families and individuals who will get access to resources that they wouldn’t have had otherwise, that are going to give them the ability to participate more in the economy.” The premier has not committed to a firm timeline to deliver the payments, but said earlier Wednesday that he hoped to have them by Christmas, or “very, very early in the new year.” With the holiday season approaching amid a worsening COVID-19 pandemic in B.C., the premier urged British Columbians to keep

keeping our hands clean, keeping our distances, making sure we’re not gathering in large numbers, and, of course, always wearing a mask when we’re indoors or in public spaces,” Horgan said. The premier said he has had ongoing conversations with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his fellow premiers about discouraging travel at this point in the pandemic. “This is a critical, dangerous time for British Columbia with COVID-19,” Horgan said. “The second wave is well and truly upon us.” Horgan said that while British Columbia is faring better in combatting the pandemic than neighbouring regions to the east and south, British Columbians need to “stick to the basic activities that we are essentially required to do, and no more than that.” Horgan said he is hopeful that existing restrictions on travel and group activities that were announced last month will not need to be renewed after they’re set to expire on Monday. But he cautioned the decision would be based solely on public health data and no decision on rescinding or extending the orders would be made ahead of time. “We’re hopeful we’ll see a flattening of the curve,” Horgan said. “We’re hopeful that the orders and the directives have been adhered to by British Columbians and that we will see some relief come Monday, but (provincial health officer) Dr. (Bonnie) Henry will assess the data, she’ll do her analysis, she’ll brief the government, and decisions will be made at that time.” Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

measures, which were issued only for a twoweek period, will be extended or withdrawn. Henry said she recognizes the majority of people in the province are making sacrifices to protect both their loved ones and strangers, and that those who feel they’re the only one taking the rules seriously aren’t alone. “You are all part of our team, and that is what is making the difference for us,” she said. 9 M I D D L E E AST Saudi Arabia denies reports of Netanyahu meeting MBS in the kingdom Rabi ul II 19,1442 Dec 04, 2020

Saudi Arabia on Monday denied Israeli media reports of landmark talks between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “I have seen press reports about a purported meeting between HRH the Crown Prince and Israeli officials during the recent visit by @SecPompeo,” Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said in a tweet. “No such meeting occurred. The only officials present were American and Saudi.” Israeli public broadcaster Kan and other outlets had reported that the meeting took place on Sunday, weeks after the Jewish state reached historic deals to normalise ties with two Saudi allies, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Those deals, known as the Abraham Accords, were brokered by the administration of US President Donald Trump,

who leaves office in less than two months. Hebrew-language media cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying that Netanyahu and Yossi Cohen, head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, flew to the Saudi city of Neom on Sunday, where they met with the crown prince. The prince was there for talks with Pompeo, who was in Israel last week before travelling onto Saudi during a regional tour. A Gulfstream IV private jet took off just after 1740 GMT from Ben-Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, according to data from website FlightRadar24.com. The flight travelled south along the eastern edge of the Sinai Peninsula before turning toward Neom and landing just after 1830 GMT, according to the data. The flight took off from Neom around 2150 GMT and followed the same route back to Tel Aviv. Kan’s diplomatic correspondent said that

Pompeo was also at the reported talks between Saudi and Israeli officials. Netanyahu’s office was not immediately available to comment on the reports, and the US State Department declined to weigh in on the issue. The reports had set off a flurry of commentary on what would have been a major step forward in the Arab world’s engagement with Israel. King Salman long has supported the Palestinians in their effort to secure an independent state. However, analysts and insiders suggest his 35-year-old son, Crown Prince Mohammed, is likely more open to the idea of normalising relations without major progress in the moribund peace process. The kingdom approved the use of Saudi airspace for Israeli flights to the UAE, a decision announced the day after Jared Kushner,

Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, met with Prince Mohammed in Riyadh. Bahrain normalising ties also suggests at least a Saudi acquiescence to the idea, as the island kingdom relies on Riyadh. Friday, was widely seen by Western intelligence as the mastermind of clandestine Iranian efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies Fakhrizadeh was involved in any such undertaking and that it ever tried to weaponise uranium enrichment for nuclear energy. But he is widely thought to have headed what the United Nations atomic watchdog and United States intelligence services believe was a coordinated nuclear arms programme that was halted in 2003. What is known about him? Western officials and experts believe Fakhrizadeh played a pivotal role in past Iranian work to devise the means to assemble a nuclear warhead behind the facade of a declared civilian uranium enrichment pro-

gramme. Iran denies ever having sought to develop a nuclear weapon. He lived in the shadows under high security and was never made available to UN nuclear investigators.Fakhrizadeh rarely – if ever – surfaced in public and few outside Iran know with any certainty what he looked like, let alone had met him. He has the rare distinction of being the only Iranian scientist named in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 2015 “final assessment” of open questions about Iran’s nuclear programme and whether it was aimed at developing a bomb. The UN non-proliferation watchdog’s report said he oversaw activities “in support of a possible military dimension to [Iran’s]

nuclear programme” within the so-called AMAD Plan.A 2011 IAEA report described him as the AMAD Plan’s “Executive Officer”, a central figure in suspected Iranian work to develop technology and skills needed for atomic bombs, and suggested he may still have a role in such activity. Israel has also described the AMAD Plan as Iran’s covert nuclear weapons programme, and says it seized a large chunk of an Iranian nuclear “archive” detailing its work. In an April 2018 televised presentation about the archive, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu named Fakhrizadeh as a leading figure in what he described as secret nuclear weapons work conducted under the guise of a civilian programme. The gathering is part of UN efforts to end the chaos in Libya, a major oil producer, which has been gripped by violence since a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 overthrew and killed veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country has since 2015 been dominated by armed groups and divided between two bitterly opposed administrations: the UNbrokered Government of National Accord (GNA) and a rival administration in the east

Turkey announces vaccination plan for Chinese CoronaVac

Health minister says early use authorisation will be granted after Turkish labs confirm the shots are safe. Turkey’s health minister has announced a plan to start using an experimental Chinese COVID-19 vaccine later this month amid a surge in infections and deaths. Fahrettin Koca had previously announced an agreement with China’s Sinovac Biotech for 50 million doses of CoronaVac, which is currently in late-stage trials. Koca said in a statement late on Wednesday the first shipment of the vaccine will arrive in Turkey after December 11. The minister said early use authorisation would be granted after Turkish labs confirm the shots are safe and after assessment of initial results from the latest trials. “If developments continue positively as we expect, Turkey would be among the first countries in the world to begin vaccinations in the early phase,” Koca said. In November, The Lancet published a study about the efficacy of Sinovac’s vaccine candidate based on initial clinical trials. The study said the efficacy was determined to be moderate, and the vaccine produced lower levels of

antibodies than those that have been found in recovered COVID-19 patients. “The protective efficacy of CoronaVac remains to be determined,” the study said. Candidates from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have said they have more than 90 percent efficacy rates. The UK’s AstraZeneca has an efficacy rate of 70-90 percent, again based on limited clinical trials. Free of charge Vaccination efforts would be rolled out in four stages, the minister said. The first group includes healthcare workers, citizens above age 65, and people living in homes for the elderly, disabled or other protective care homes.Source: aljazeera.com

OIC asks India to rescind illegal acts in occupied Kashmir

the landownership laws. Also rejecting policies being pursued by the RSS-BJP regime, the 57 member countries of the OIC asked India to refrain from taking any steps to alter the demographic structure of the disputed territory. The OIC foreign ministers condemned in the strongest possible terms human rights violations perpetrated by Indian occupation forces in held Kashmir and other such instances of terrorism that have been the source of unspeakable suffering for the innocent Kashmiri people. The resolution condemned the state-sponsored terrorism and crimes against humanity by Indian occupation forces against the Kashmiri people. It denounced extrajudicial killings during fake ‘encounters’ and ‘search-and-cordon’ operations and demolition of houses and private properties as a form of collective punishment;.The unanimous resolution condemned the renewed use of pellet guns by Indian occupation forces against innocent civilians, condemned the harassment of Kashmiri women by Indian troops and deplored that India had callously exploited the current Covid-19 crisis to intensify its military crackdown and further advance its

unlawful occupation. The conference welcomed the visit of OIC Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir from March 2-6, 2020. India was asked to adhere to its international human rights obligations and allow the OIC Special Representative on Jammu and Kashmir and the OIC Fact-finding Mission to visit occupied Kashmir and implement recommendations of the two reports of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Jammu & Kashmir. The OIC asked the international community to review its engagements with India as it was violating and disregarding the international law, the international humanitarian law, and international resolutions. It emphasised that the question of Kashmir was of utmost importance for the Ummah. The OIC recognised that Jammu and Kashmir is the core dispute between Pakistan and India, and its resolution indispensable for realisation of the dream of peace in South Asia. The CFM noted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are the principal party to the dispute, and stressed that they should be included in any peace process for resolution of the dispute. It affirmed that any political or electoral pro-

Islamofascism

“ Islamic fascism” (first described in 1933), also known since 1990 as “Islamofascism”, is a term drawing an analogy between the ideological characteristics of specific Islamist movements and a broad range of European fascist movements of the early 20th century, neofascist movements, or totalitarianism.

Origins of the term “Islamofascism”

T

he term “Islamofascism” is defined in the New Oxford American Dictionary as “a term equating some modern Islamic movements with the European fascist movements of the early twentieth century”. The earliest known use of the contiguous term Islamic Fascism dates to 1933 when Akhtar Husayn Rā’ēpūrī, in an attack on Muhammad Iqbāl, defined attempts to secure the independence of Pakistan as a form of Islamic fascism. Some analysts consider Manfred Halpern’s use of the phrase ‘neoIslamic totalitarianism’ in his 1963 book The Politics of Social Change in the Middle East and North Africa, as a precursor to the concept of Islamofascism, in that he discusses Islamism as a new kind of fascism. Halpern’s primary case was based on an analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and he argued that such Islamic movements were an obstacle to the military regimes who were in his view representatives of a new middle class capable of modernizing the Middle East. Halpern’s work, commissioned by the United States Air Force from the Rand Corporation, arguably represents a mix of midCold War analysis and orientalism. In 1978, Maxime Rodinson, a distinguished Marxist scholar of Islam, responded to French avant-garde enthusiasm for Khomeini’s revolution in a three part article in Le Monde, by arguing that, in response to

successive assaults by Crusaders, Mongols, Turks and Western imperialism, Islamic countries had come to feel embattled, and the impoverished masses had come to think of their elites, linked to foreigners, as devoid of traditional piety. Both nationalism and socialism imported from the West were recast in religious terms, in a process of political Islamicization which would be devoid of the progressive side of nationalism and revert to what he called “a type of archaic fascism” characterized by policing the state to enforce a totalitarian moral and social order. The earliest example of the term “Islamofascism,” according to William Safire, occurs in an article penned by the Scottish scholar and writer Malise Ruthven writing in 1990. Ruthven used it to refer to the way in which traditional Arab dictatorships used religious appeals in order to stay in power.Malise Ruthven, Construing Islam as a Language, The Independent 8 September 1990. “Nevertheless there is what might be called a political problem affecting the Muslim world. In contrast to the heirs of some other nonWestern traditions, including Hinduism, Shintoism and Buddhism, Islamic societies seem to have found it particularly hard to institutionalise divergences politically: authoritarian government, not to say Islamofascism, is the rule rather than the exception from Morocco to Pakistan.” Ruthven doubts that he himself coined the term, stating that the attribution to him is probably due to the fact that internet search engines don’t go back beyond 1990.

Criticism of theory of a link between Islam and fascism

The term “Islamofascism” has been criticized by several scholars. While Islamic Fascism has been discussed as a category of serious

cess held under foreign occupation cannot be a substitute to the exercise of the right to self-determination. Tabled during the 47th session of the CFM, a separate resolution was drafted in the context of growing incidents of Islamophobia in various parts of the world. The resolution expressed concern that Islamophobia, as a contemporary form of racism and religious discrimination, was on the rise. It expressed deep concern at the recent incidents of desecration of the Holy Quran and reprinting of blasphemous caricatures which hurt sentiments of more than 1.8 billion Muslims around the world. The OIC decided to designate March 15 as the “International Day to Combat Islamophobia” each year. It authorised the OIC Permanent Missions in New York to jointly table a resolution in the UN General Assembly, calling for establishment of this day. The resolution urged the OIC member states to organise and support various high-visibility events aimed at effectively increasing awareness at all levels about curbing Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred. Speaking on the session, Foreign Qureshi said that adoption of the resolution was a reflection of the sentiments of billions of Muslims who respected other religions and expected similar respect for Islam and the Prophet (peace be upon him). Meanwhile, positively responding to Pakistan’s offer, the CFM meeting decided to host its 48th session in Islamabad in 2021. As the prospective CFM Chair, Pakistan also became a member of the six-member OIC Executive Committee for the next three years. Meetings with FMs Foreign Minister Qureshi in his meeting with United Arab Emirates’ Minister of State Reem Al Hashimi raised the issue of the ban

imposed by the Arab country on Pakistanis. Mr Qureshi, who spent a busy day in Niamey, holding meetings with foreign ministers of some countries, apprised Ms Hashimi of difficulties being faced by Pakistani citizens with regard to the UAE’s ban on visas. Pakistan is among 13 Muslim majority countries facing the ban on new employment and visit visas recently placed by the UAE. Interestingly, India is not included in these countries, and the visa on arrival facility is still available for European countries making it clear that the ban has little to do with the coronavirus. Mr Qureshi underscored the need to address the issue at the earliest possible. He highlighted the close fraternal ties as well as people-to-people contacts between the two countries and stressed Pakistan’s commitment to forge closer cooperation with the UAE in diverse fields. While appreciating Mr Qureshi’s statement at the CFM session, the Emirati minister lauded Pakistan’s initiative to propose an OIC resolution on combating Islamophobia. The two sides also exchanged views on OIC matters and stressed the importance of strengthening it as a united and pivotal platform for the Ummah. It was also agreed to enhance mutual exchanges to carry forward the process of growing bilateral cooperation. Mr Qureshi also held meetings with Foreign Minister Kalla Ankouraou of Niger, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Somalia Balal Mohamed Osman, Sudanese Foreign Minister Omar Qamaruddin Ismail and Foreign Minister of Kuwait Dr Ahmad Nasser Al Mohammed Al Sabah. analysis by the scholars mentioned above, the term “Islamofascism” circulated mainly as a propaganda, rather than as an analytic, term after the September 11 attacks on the United States in September 2001but also gained a foothold in more sober political discourse, both academic and pseudo-academic. Many critics are dismissive, variously branding it as “meaningless” (Daniel Benjamin); “a kosher-halal” throwback version of the “vacuous” old leftist epithet “fascist pig” (Norman Finkelstein);a “figment of the neocon imagination” (Paul Krugman);[65] and as betraying an ignorance of both Islam and Fascism (Angelo Codevilla) Tony Judt, in an analysis of liberal acquiescence in President George W. Bush’s foreign policy initiatives, particularly the War on Terror and the invasion of Iraq, argued that this policy was premised on the notion there was such a thing as Islamofascism, a notion Judt considered catastrophic. In his diagnosis of this shift he detected a decline in the old liberal consensus of American politics, and what he called the “deliquescence of the Democratic Party”. Many former left-liberal pundits, like Paul Berman and Peter Beinart having no knowledge of the Middle East or cultures like those of Wahhabism and Sufism on which they descant authoritatively, have, he claimed, and his view was shared by Niall Ferguson, latched onto the war on terror as a new version of the old liberal fight against fascism, in the form of Islamofascism. In

their approach there is a cozy acceptance of a binary division of the world into ideological antitheses, the “familiar juxtaposition that eliminates exotic complexity and confusion: Democracy v. Totalitarianism, Freedom v. Fascism, Them v. Us” has been revived. Judt cited many others who, once liberals have fallen in lockstep with the American idea of a global war against Islamic jihad: Adam Michnik, Oriana Fallaci; Václav Havel; André Glucksmann, Michael Ignatieff, Leon Wieseltier, David Remnick, Thomas Friedman and Michael Walzer. Christopher Hitchens was also criticized by Judt, as making unhistoric simplifications, to justify use of the term. In 2012 a special issue of Die Welt des Islams was dedicated to surveying the issue of Islamophobia in recent Western reportage and scholarly studies, with essays on various facets of the controversy by Katajun Amirpur, Moshe Zuckerman, René Wildangel, Joachim Scholtyseck and others. Their positions were almost invariably critical of the term and the concept underlying it. In a 2016 lecture, American historian Paul Gottfried proposed that some strains of Islam could accurately be described as Islamist or Islamic terrorist but definitely not fascist, because he maintains that the only accurate use of Fascism is to describe the government of Italy under Mussolini from 1922 to 1938. Popular winter beverage may actually make you smarter

C

ocoa is the cosy beverage of choice during dark winter evenings. You wrap yourself in a Christmas blanket, turn on an appropriate movie and just sip your hot cocoa. However, it is not just delicious – it is also good for your brain, as this new study from the University of Birmingham has shown. But how can it be helpful to maintain mental agility? Scientists invited 18 healthy 18-40 year old males to participate in this study. At first, they were breathing air with 100 times higher concentration of carbon dioxide than normal. This caused hypercapnia – increased concentration of CO2. Our bodies naturally react to it by increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood. Scientists measured and observed this effect using non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy, which allowed them to track the increased brain oxygenation in the frontal cortex. And then it was time for cocoa.

Participants did two more of these tests after drinking cocoa. One of those times they drank flavanol enriched cocoa. Cocoa has some flavanols already, but scientists added even more of them. They found that enriched cocoa helped the brain to increase the level of oxygen much more rapidly and much more efficiently. Participants also had to do some cognitive tests. After drinking flavanol enriched cocoa they scored higher in higher complexity tasks. They were more accurate and around 11 % faster. It’s been known for some time now that flavanols improve cardiovascular health. They can help lowering blood pressure, improving blood oxygenation levels (which is what helps in cognitive performance) and even stamina. However, this is the first time that scientists managed to show that flavanols help cognitive performance as well. And you don’t have to drink cocoa, if you don’t like it. Usually cocoa beverages include a

lot of sugar, which is not good for anything. Flavanols are also found in apples, grapes, tea, berries and some other natural foods. Dr Catarina Rendeiro, lead author of the study, said: “Our results showed a clear benefit for the participants taking the flavanol-enriched drink – but only when the task became sufficiently complicated. We can link this with our results on improved blood oxygenation – if you’re being challenged more, your brain needs improved blood oxygen levels to manage that challenge”. Flavanols are especially beneficial in cognitively demanding tasks, but scientists also found that some people do not experience the same benefits. This could be because they are already fit and sharp. This is a relatively small study. This means that further studies with more participants

are needed. However, it is a good idea to improve your diet with flavanols, because it is very likely to improve your mental agility. Source: University of Birmingham

The benefits of Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program

By: Kareem El-Assal ANALYSIS: The Parents and Grandparents Program offers a variety of benefits to families and Canadian society. The 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program intake window was opened till Nov 3, 2020. etween October 13th and November 3rd, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can submit interest to sponsor forms on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) website. After November 3rd, IRCC will conduct a lottery and invite candidates to submit sponsorship applications to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada. IRCC will accept up to 10,000 applications for the 2020

B

PGP window. The PGP’s benefits are clear for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who bring their parents and grandparents to Canada. They get to reunite with their loved ones. Their parents and grandparents enjoy the full benefits of being permanent residents such as the ability to work in Canada, access health care, and eventually earn the right to become Canadian citizens. What are the benefits to Canadian society? First, strong families are the backbone of Canadian society. There is also a very strong economic case that can be made in favour of the Parents and Grandparents Program. Research shows that parents and grandpar-

ents contribute to the household income. This allows families to have greater purchasing power which benefits the economy. Buying a home is the biggest purchase we all make and the homeownership rate of immigrant families is equivalent to Canadianborn families (roughly 70 per cent of families own a home). In addition to supplementing the household income, parents and grandparents enable their children and grandchildren to work more hours. The reason for this is that parents and grandparents can provide child care, giving the rest of the family more flexibility to pursue economic opportunity. In the past, Canadian government surveys have found that the PGP is among the least popular immigration streams among Canadians. This is understandable given the perception that parents and grandparents contribute little to the Canadian economy, and are likely to be a significant expense on social services such as health care. But, it is important to remember that Canada mitigates these concerns in several major ways. First, parents and grandparents account for just 6 per cent of the total number of immigrants Canada welcomes in a typical year. In order to immigrate to Canada, parents and grandparents, just like all immigrants, need to pass a medical screening authorized

by the Canadian government to ensure they do not create excessive demand on Canada’s health care system. Third, Canada imposes a 20-year undertaking period on those who sponsor their parents and grandparents. This means that sponsors sign a contract with the Canadian government that they will be financially responsible for their parents and grandparents for 20 years from the date their family member obtains permanent residence. During this entire period, the sponsor is legally obligated to repay any social assistance that is collected by their parents or grandparents. This results in very low social assistance utilization by parents and grandparents. Finally, Canada seeks to pursue economic, social, and humanitarian goals through its immigration system. It wants immigrants to benefit the economy, and thus it selects nearly 60 per cent of its immigrants under the economic class. It also seeks to reunite families which is why it operates the Parents and Grandparents Program. Thirdly, it seeks to assist those who are less fortunate based on humanitarian reasons. While it should not be viewed through an economic lens, a case can certainly be made that the Parents and Grandparents Program does help the Canadian economy. Source: cicnews.com

Talking to the media on Wednesday, Hafiz Ashrafi, who heads the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), said the prime minister had recently stated that the country was being pressured to recognise Israel, but expressed his resolve that “Islamabad will not compromise on the rights of fellow Muslims”.

By:Fahd Husain t is hard to decipher which is worse: what he said, how he said it, or when he said it. What is relatively less hard to decipher is this: the combined might of PTI’s sundry mouthpieces could not have damaged PML-N more today than the havoc wreaked by former finance minister Ishaq Dar’s interview in BBC’s show Hardtalk. If the PML-N peers hard into the smouldering wreckage of that interview, it may find some important questions lying buried in the debris: a) Who authorised Ishaq Dar to do the interview? b) Why did the person who authorised the interview not realise the magnitude of the blunder he/she was indulging in? c) Did Dar seek any help in preparing for the interview? If so, from whom? d) What was the objective of the interview? Was this debated within party circles? e) Did party leaders in Pakistan know in advance about the interview? If so, why did they not advise against it? If not, why were they not informed about the interview? f) Will Dar now be taken to task by the party leadership? g) Is PML-N ready to learn from the Dar disaster or is it smug in its misplaced overconfidence? h) Who in the party will now be tasked with damage control? Is it even possible to do so? i) What will PML-N do now to divert public

No intention to recognise Israel, says PM aide In reply to a question, the special assistant recalled that Riyadh had already denied the reports about a meeting between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Israeli prime minister. “Prime Minister Imran Khan has clearly said that Pakistan will not recognise Israel, Saudi Arabia has a similar position on the issue of Palestine.” The SAPM said he had recently discussed the issues of forced conversion through marriage and the misuse of blasphemy laws with Dr Shireen Mazari, the federal Minister for Human Rights. Ashrafi points out Saudi Arabia has denied reports of meeting between crown prince and Israeli premier The misuse of section 295-C of the penal code, which relates to blasphemy, had

dropped significantly in the recent past, Hafiz Ashrafi added. “Those who are trying to push their personal agenda under cover of blasphemy laws are sincere neither to Islam nor to Pakistan,” he observed. “We will not allow anyone to misuse the law.” He acknowledged that the misuse of blasphemy law and forced conversions were occurring due to the state’s failure to ensure the rule of law.“We are taking steps to ensure all religious minorities are protected as the state is responsible for safeguarding the rights of every individual.” Hafiz Ashrafi said the Constitution was the best guarantor of the rights of every Muslim as well as non-Muslim living in the country. “Islam does not allow us to coerce non-Mus-

lims to become Muslim,” he said. “And forced conversion through marriage is an undignified act.” He said the human rights ministry was working on a mechanism to eliminate the fear of forced marriage among non-Muslims. “Efforts are being made at the grassroots level to create inter-faith and inter-religious harmony through the establishment of councils.” Source: dawn.com

attention from the Dar disaster? Those who watch Pakistani politics closely knew a disaster like the one that Dar did was only a matter of time. Media discipline is an oxymoron within our political parties. These parties revolve around personalities and this leads to a personalised form of discipline that discriminates between those who are closest to the leader and those who are less so. What makes matters worse is the absence of institutional checks on senior party people’s whims. A common reaction is: “Who dare teach me what to say?” With no clearly defined roles within intra-party setups and no finely delineated hierarchies for specific decision-making, political parties provide enough rope to their senior people to hang themselves with. Dar did just that. People in PML-N are aghast. Privately many are shaking their heads in disbelief. Even senior people in Islamabad and Lahore had no idea about the interview till it fell on them like a stink bomb. They know this sets back their narrative when they need to strengthen it for what they deem as the final stretch of the campaign against the government. The Lahore jalsa is less than two weeks away. The opposition needed this time to build momentum by stepping up the offensive and keeping the government on the ropes. But now they may lose precious time trying to clean the Dar mess. Unless… Yes — unless the party decides to throw Dar under the bus. Well, not in the sense of disowning him (he has powerful family connections), but in letting him deal with

to counter the criticism. We will know soon enough from the party responses on display. There is much elation in the Red Zone. For a beleaguered and besieged government, Dar has walked in like Santa bearing Christmas gifts. If the motley crew of PTI mouthpieces are grinning from ear to ear, they have reason to. Dar has bowled them a gentle full toss on the leg side. Wham! And yet there is more to it than just a disastrous media appearance by an overconfident and under-prepared politician. Amid the cacophony of intense polarisation, the fundamentals of political communication — both inside and outside the Red Zone — are taking a battering. The cost to democracy is a steep one. Take the official media, for instance. The state broadcaster PTV has recently been gifted a new chairman by Prime Minister Imran Khan. In one of his first statements after being nominated to the post, lawyer and TV personality Naeem Bokhari said the opposition had no right to be on PTV because it was a government channel. A few days later, the prime minister defended him in an interview. The issue is not that a new chairman is clueless about the role of the organisation he is heading, but that his boss too seems oblivious of what a taxpayer-funded broadcaster is meant to do in a democratic society. This acute lack of understanding about media, communication and its value to citizens filters down within the rank and file of the government. PTI

press conferences and abusive statements as the sum-total of their media strategy and communication has sidetracked it from its primary responsibility of introducing structural reforms within the official information set-up. This was a task taken upon by retired Lt Gen Asim Bajwa when he had joined the official media team as SAPM for information. Bajwa understood the deeper requirements of strategic communication at the official level. He had plans to introduce sweeping reforms within the expansive official information set-up. Had these plans been fleshed out and executed, the official media landscape could have transformed for the better. However his departure from this position seems to have shut this door for now. Very few in government understand modern communication like he did. This leaves the official media landscape in disarray. The information ministry is a dinosaur and irrelevant to the demands of modern communication. It is a relic of a past that has little value in the present and almost none in the future we can see. The role of the information minister has been dumbed down by successive governments. Today the minister is judged by his bosses for his abrasive rhetoric and not for producing effective three dimensional communication that straddles all media platforms and produces content which can find traction among all audiences in all demographics. with the head of Maradona,” he said of his opener in the 2-1 win. Rising to stardom from a grimy Buenos Aires slum to lead Argentina to World Cup victory, Maradona was a veritable rags-toriches story in his soccer-mad homeland and gained the iconic status of fellow Argentines Che Guevara and Evita Peron. But years of drug use, overeating and alcoholism truncated a stellar career and altered his appearance from a lithe athlete who could slalom effortlessly through teams to a bloated addict who nearly died of cocaineinduced heart failure in 2000. But he reinvented himself in a stunning comeback in 2008 as Argentina’s coach, persuading managers that with sheer charisma he could inspire the team to victory, despite a lack of coaching experience. A magician with the ball _ deceptively quick and a visionary passer — Maradona is considered by some as the greatest soccer player ever, edging out that other great, Brazil’s Pele. In Argentina, he was worshipped as `El Dios’ (the god) — partly a play on words on his number 10 shirt,`El Diez’. On the ball from the start Born on Oct 30, 1960, in the Buenos Aires working class suburb of Lanus, the fifth of eight children of a factory worker, Maradona grew up in the Villa Fiorito shanty town. His mother Dalma, known to his fans as “Dona Tota”, saw a star reflected on the floor

in the church where her son was baptised and imagined a bright future as an accountant. But Maradona’s love affair with soccer was apparent from the start. Given his first football as an infant, he slept with it under his arm. Discovered in street kickabouts by the scout for first division club Argentinos Juniors, the prodigy made his league debut at 15. At 17 he just missed inclusion in Argentina’s 1978 World Cup-winning squad at home. In the 1982 tournament in Spain, a sending-off against Brazil was a fitting prologue to two unhappy seasons at Barcelona, marred by hepatitis and injury. But then came liberation, and triumph. In 1984, he moved to Napoli for a then worldrecord $7.5 million contract. Maradona helped underdogs Napoli to the Italian title twice — creating a whole new set of adoring fans in the process. And, after the 1986 World Cup triumph in Mexico, he also coaxed a mediocre Argentine team to a second successive World Cup final in Rome in 1990. But by 1991, drugs and alcohol began taking over his life. That year Maradona was handed a 15-month suspension from football worldwide for doping and was called to trial in Naples over alleged links with a vice ring. He was banned again for 15 months after testing positive for drugs at the 1994 World

Cup in the United States. The compact, 5-foot 4-inch (1.65m) player with dark curly hair and a pugnacious set to his jaw, surrounded himself with an entourage of yes-men and became known for his sharp-tongued confrontations with reporters and critics. Through the years he reflected publicly on his greatness and on his weaknesses. “Soccer is the most beautiful and healthy sport in the world. Soccer shouldn’t have to pay for my mistakes. It’s not the ball’s fault,” he said. Slow-motion suicide Maradona retired from professional soccer in 1997 and after his brush with death in 2000 he underwent drug rehabilitation, living off-and-on in Cuba between 2000 and 2005, where he often spent time with Fidel Castro. He had a tattoo of the Cuban leader on his leg — and one of fellow revolutionary Che on his arm.....Source: dawn.com

Soccer legend Maradona dies of heart attack

UENOS AIRES: Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona, widely regarded as one of the game’s greatest ever players, died of a heart attack on Wednesday. Maradona, 60, had recently battled health issues and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural haematoma several weeks ago. He suffered a heart attack at his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentinian media and acquaintances of the former player said. Argentine President Alberto Fernandez declared three days of national mourning. Retired Brazilian soccer star Pele was among those who mourned the legend. “Certainly, one day we’ll kick a ball together in the sky above,” he said in a brief statement. Diego Armando Maradona was worshipped like a god for his genius with the ball, but his demons almost destroyed him. One of the most gifted soccer players in history, Maradona’s pinnacle of glory came when he captained Argentina to win the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, before plunging to misery when he was kicked out the 1994 edition for doping. He was largely responsible for Argentina’s victory, scoring two famous goals in one game against England in the quarter-finals. The first was a notorious goal scored with his fist, and the second, where he dribbled past half the England team, is often called “the goal of the century”. “It was partly by the hand of God and partly
