Trump seen hardening line toward Pakistan

US President Donald Trump’s administration appears ready to harden its approach toward Pakistan to crack down on Pakistan-based militants launching attacks in neighbouring Afghanistan, US officials tell Reuters. Potential Trump administration responses being discussed include expanding US drone strikes, redirecting or withholding some aid to Pakistan and perhaps eventually downgrading Pakistan’s status as a major non-NATO ally, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Some US officials, however, are sceptical of the prospects for success and that already strengthening US ties to India, Pakistan’s arch-enemy, undermine chances of a breakthrough with Islamabad.US officials say they seek greater cooperation with Pakistan, not a rupture in ties, once the administration finishes a regional review of the strategy guiding the 16-year-old war in Afghanistan. The White House and Pentagon declined to comment on the review before its completion. Pakistan’s embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “The United States and Pakistan continue to partner on a range of national security issues,” Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said. Although long mindful of Pakistan, the Trump administration in recent weeks has put more emphasis on the relationship with Islamabad in discussions as it hammers out a the regional strategy to be presented to Trump by mid-July, nearly six months

after he took office, one official said. “We’ve never really fully articulated what our strategy towards Pakistan is. The strategy will more clearly say what we want from Pakistan specifically,” the US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Other US officials warn of divisions within the

government about the right approach and question whether any mix of carrots and sticks can get Islamabad to change its behaviour. At the end of the day, Washington needs a partner in nuclear-armed Pakistan, they say. The United States is again poised to deploy thousands more troops in Afghanistan, an acknowledgement that US-backed forces are not winning and Taliban militants are resurgent. Without more pressure on Pakistan, experts say additional US troop deployments will fail to meet their ultimate objective: to pressure the Taliban to eventually negotiate peace. “I believe there will be a much harder US line on Pakistan going forward than there has been in the past,” Hamdullah Mohib, the Afghan ambassador to the United States, told Reuters, without citing specific measures under review. “What Pakistan says is that we are already doing a lot and that our plate is already full,” a senior Pakistani government source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The source doubted the Trump administration would press too hard, saying: “They don’t want to push Pakistan to abandon their war against terrorism.” Pakistani officials point towards the toll militancy has taken on the country. Since 2003, almost 22,000 civilians and nearly 7,000 Pakistani security forces have been killed as a result of militancy, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal, which tracks violence. SC rejects Hussain Nawaz plea on picture leak

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected petition of Hussain Nawaz in picture leak issue, which was reserved June 14 just a day before Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was to appear before the Panama papers Joint Investigation Team (JIT). The petition sought stoppage of video recording of Panama papers case JIT proceedings and leaking of Hussain Nawaz photograph. A threemember special implementation bench of the apex court headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan heard the case filed by Hussain Nawaz. Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan read out the verdict. It said that the JIT can record the proceedings but cannot use them as evidence.

During the course of proceedings, Advocate Khawaja Haris Ahmad counsel for Hussain Nawaz appeared before the bench and said that video recording of JIT proceedings should not be allowed. He alleged that JIT had no control over CCTV cameras. Khawaja Haris expressed concern over leaking of his cli-

ent’s picture and said that after leaking of the photo, a video could also be leaked. What was the guarantee that a video would not be leaked, he asked. Justice Ejaz remarked that video recording was done for maintaining accurate transcripts. The facts of the case could not be affected by the procedure and

nature of statements also did not change because of it, he added. Justice Azmat Saeed observed that the proceedings’ recordings would help the petitioner more than it could hurt him. Justice Azmat Saeed asked the attorney general if he had read the JIT’s report submitted in the court on Monday. The attorney general replied that he had not read it so far. The bench directed the attorney general to examine the JIT report and submit his response on Thursday. After listening to the arguments, the court reserved the judgment over the issue pertaining to leaking of Hussain Nawaz’s picture and video recording of JIT proceedings and adjourned the hearing of the case till Thursday. India arrests 15 for cheering Pakistan in Champions Trophy

Fifteen Muslim men have been arrested in India for allegedly shouting “anti-India and pro-Pakistan” slogans during the Champions Trophy cricket final. The men were denied bail in Madhya Pradesh state after appearing in court where they were charged with sedition. They were arrested after their Hindu neighbours complained that they had burst firecrackers and shouted “pro-Pakistan” slogans during the game. Pakistan won the final, defeating India by 180 runs. Sedition is one of the most serious charges under the Indian penal code. People charged with sedition have to surrender their passports, are not eligible for government jobs, must appear in court as and when required, and spend money on legal fees. The In-

dia Today website quoted police as saying that the men were charged because of the anti-India slogans and not because they were cheering for Pakistan. This is not the first time Indian Muslims have got into trouble for cheering for the Pakistan cricket team. In 2014, 66 Muslim students from Indian-administered Kashmir were kicked out of their university in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh and charged with disturbing communal harmony. And in 2016, police were sent into a university in Indian-administered Kashmir after clashes between students from the state and other parts of the country. Source: BBC news

E D I T O R I A L

Gift of Eid ul Fitr

A

lhamdulillah, the month of mandatory fasting is coming to an end: The noble Qur’an has clearly expressed the act of “ F as t i n g ” as a blessing and not a calamity: “Allah desires ease for you, not your discomfort. He desires you to fast the entire month, and that you may magnify Him for giving you His guidance, and that you may give thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2:18 5). Taqwa: Eid ul Fitr t is one of the best rewards for Muslims. Having attained the wealth of Taqwa and spiritual correctness during the daily dawn to dusk “ f as t i n g w o r k o u t , ” the Muslim-worshippers are successful in becoming self disciplined. The positive change makes them feel at peace; immediately next thing for them happens to be the most exciting festivity. In other words, upon successful completion of the month of Ramadan, the Ei d d ay is a ‘Th an k s g i v i n g D ay ’ for having gone through a tough exercise towards “self-purification.” Charity: Among other essential elements is paying Zakat (wealth tax) and Fitra to minimize the harsh impact of any prevailing misfortune, hunger or widespread poverty. Therefore, when it comes to this religious obligation, the Muslims are

duty bound to help out the needy people before the Eid Prayer. The Muslims are required to pay Zakat based on their wealth and financial ability. It consists of spending 2.5% of one’s wealth for the benefit of the needy people. The good thing is paying Zakat is considered to be the personal responsibility of all Muslims to eliminate inequality and ease economic hardship of others for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa taalaa. Charity in the form of fitra (fitrana) is obligatory at the end of the Fasting month before the Eid prayer. This again means the real happiness of “EID” lies in sharing our happiness with “the have nots.”, On this happy occasion, good Muslims remember those who are a icted with poverty, ignorance, disease, or otherwise are less fortunate. Beauty is Muslims on this very day are encouraged to erase their grudges or differences with others. Eid day schedule: After offering the regular Salat ul Fajr (the presunrise prayer), the Muslims will be heading out shortly after the Sun-rise to perform the obligatory prayer in congregation (slaat ul Eid) in open areas, community centres and mosques.

Eid prayer is followed by special Khutba (Sermon) and supplication asking for God’s forgiveness, mercy, peace and blessings for all people across the world. Right after the Khutba is over, Muslims will be hugging each other wishing Ei d M u b ar ak . Then they will be visiting their relatives and friends. Eid gifts (known as Eidie) are given on this precious occasion to children and to immediate relatives. Children will receive gifts in cash or kind; sweets and tasty dishes would be served throughout the day. Altogether, the caring Muslims will be generously donating money; they are likely to be contributing to their local food banks for the less fortunate. Some groups do reserve other activity centres for the full day of fun and celebration, while others would hold public Eid parties in mosques as a means of OUTREACH to the non-Muslim society. Positive Difference: It’s commonly seen that holiday for the nonMuslims is a chance to indulge in worldly pleasures, or involve oneself sinfully or immorally and unlawfully, yet for Muslims, there is zero tolerance in the eyes of Allah subhanahu wa talaa for committing

150TH Canada Day Ahead!

forbidden acts. This is certainly a good contribution to maintain a morality enriched nation. Let’s be warned that ‘ EID ’ doesn’t give an automatic ticket to take a vacation from Islamic responsibilities, and no wasting of “time or money” is permitted either, simply because our obedience and submission to the “ W i l l o f Al l ah ” cannot be compromised under any circumstance. We have learnt that ‘ EID ’ is a chance to multiply good deeds by bringing pleasure to the hearts of other Muslims as well as by devoting for the sake of Allah SWT. Most importantly, it’s the spirit of thanksgiving that make the Muslim Umma stronger all over the globe for the accomplishment of an act of dedication and submission to the total will of Allah, the Almighty. The most beautiful fact is festival of Eid ul Fitr is aimed at promoting peace, strengthening the feeling of brotherhood and enabling the Muslims to move on with their lives normally as a refined Umma in the eyes of our Creator. Hence, the Eid and its celebration in Islam carry a distinctive meaning and spirit as they are totally different from the celebrations in non Muslim communities.

Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the ‘ D o m i n i o n o f C an ad a. ’ As a result, Canada became a selfgoverning dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, uebec and Ontario. Now we can be sure that such killers are the fake Muslims proven by themselves as no true Muslims would ever kill any innocent people, especially not in the sacred month of Ramadaan in which Muslims are forbidden to even say a rude word, even if somebody is rude to a ‘Fasting’ person he/she is only to say: peace, otherwise the fasting is broken, but obviously these fake Muslims have no knowledge of it, nor have any idea who Allah is. Yet, cheating and uttering blaspheme: “This is for Allah, or in the name of Allah”. The divine law says: “killing one innocent person is like carrying sins of killing the whole community”. Even lying, cheating, and deceiving in the name of

Islam is a deadly Sin-a criminal activity. Therefore, with such strong evidence of violation of the ‘sharia’ divine law in the sacred month of Ramadaan proven one cannot be a Muslim, but a fake Muslim pretending to be Muslim. Like those who has rejected Allah-Creator, HIS divine Revelation the Al-Quran yet using the title of Islam and Muslim, they cannot be ‘Muslim’ and so must not use the fake ID of ‘Muslim’. They are like ‘Wolf under the coat of Sheep’. Including ISIS-Daesh, ISIL and other groups cannot be identified as Muslims nor called Islamists, but Demons as they are not fighting for Islam but against Islam trying to create hatred against Islam and Muslims, and in reality wants to eliminate Islam.

This is their demonic treacherous trick. In this an era of Dajjal-Anti-Christ such treachery is in full fledge. The Islamic and Bible prophecies on Dajjal is crystal clear and so the Christians and Muslims needs to be vigilant of sweet talker anti-Christ-anti-GOD a deceiver, most hateful of Creator and wants to divert the Believers of GOD to the opposite path, like he did to prophet Adam (AS) and his wife H. Eve (RA). Islam is not a mere man-made religioncult that cannot be changed as one pleases.Evidently, the killers and such fake Muslims cannot expect to get the Islamic Burial and services. “130 imams condemn attackers and refused to perform funeral prayer for them”. Who can blame them?

FAITH Narrated / Authority of: Anas bin Malik Allah’s Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of Eidul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of dates. Hadith no: 73(S.BK

What’s After Ramadan?

By Dr. Main Al-Qudah Ph.D esterday, Muslims were waiting for Ramadan, however, today they are saying goodbye to it, as if this month were moments long. And as this month passed quickly, life does, and so people die and move to the hereafter. The end of Ramadan reminds us with the closeness of death. The end of Ramadan reminds us with the saying of the prophet SAAW, “Live in this world like a stranger or a bye-passer”. Ibn Omar used to say, “If you wake up, don’t wait for the evening, and if you reach the evening, don’t wait for the morning. Take advantage of your good health and your life”. The end of Ramadan reminds us with the saying of Nooh SAAW, who lived more than thousand years. When death came to him, he was asked about life, he said, “My example with life is just like a person enters a house that has two doors, he enters from one, and gets out from the other”. The prophet Muhammad SAAW also said, “My example in this life is just like a traveler who takes shelter under a tree and then leaves it and goes”. While saying goodbye to Ramadan, each one of us should ask himself these questions: What have I gained from this month?

Have I passed the test? Do I deserve to you closer to your Lord, it causes your sins doubled since the need for it is urgent for get the diploma of taqwa? Liberals say national security reform bill aims to strike balance Man charged with ‘terrorism’ over attack on Muslims between keeping Canadians safe, protecting rights A 47-year-old van man has been charged with

A super-watchdog to oversee the full array of federal intelligence services would be created under legislation introduced today. The measure is part of a package of national security changes tabled by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government. Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says the new expert body – the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency – would keep an eye on intelligence services across government. The idea is to ensure a more seamless and comprehensive approach to reviewing Canadian security agencies. Many have complained the current system doesn’t work as well as it should because separate watchdogs review the activities of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the RCMP and the cyberspies of the Communications Security Establishment. The existing watchdogs cannot always freely exchange information about complaints or collaborate on reviews – a problem the new body is intended to solve. The 150-page bill also follows through on Liberal campaign promises to repeal some elements of omnibus security legislation brought in by the Conservatives after a gunman stormed Parliament Hill in 2014. The Conservatives

gave CSIS explicit authority to derail terrorist threats, not just gather information about them. However, many Canadians have expressed concerns that such disruption activities could violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The legislation introduced today would require CSIS to seek a warrant for any threat reduction measure that would “limit” a right or freedom protected by the charter and it clarifies that a warrant can only be issued if a judge is satisfied the measure complies with the charter. In addition, the new National Security and Intelligence Review Agency would have a role in reviewing the spy service’s threat reduction measures. The Liberal bill comes as MPs prepare to head to their ridings for the summer, which means the legislation is unlikely to face serious debate until the fall. The government says it aims to strike a balance between keeping Canadians safe and respecting their rights and freedoms. “We all have a stake in it, so all Canadians can have confidence that our security and our freedoms are being protected,” Goodale said. “That is the goal of this legislation.” Source: Global News

1 in 2 Canadians will get cancer: Cancer Society

Almost one in every two Canadians is expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and one in four Canadians will die from the disease, a new report by the Canadian Cancer Society predicts. In 2017, an estimated 206,200 Canadians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer and an estimated 80,800 will succumb to their malignancy — making cancer the leading cause of death in Canada, the charitable organization said Tuesday in its annual cancer statistics report. “Currently, every year we’re seeing an increase in the number of cancer cases in Canada,” said the society’s epidemiologist, Leah Smith. “So between now and 2030, for example, we expect to continue to see a dramatic increase in the number of cancers diagnosed in Canada. “That is a reflection of the growing and aging population,” she said. “About 90 per cent of all the cancers that we expect to be diagnosed in 2017 will be among Canadians 50 years of age and older.” About 45 per cent of those cases will occur in people age 70 and older, said Smith, noting that as more people move into old age, the number of cancer cases will rise. Despite the projection that cancer will cause the deaths of one in four Canadians, cancer mortality rates have been declining since their peak in 1988. Over the past three decades, deaths due to cancer have fallen by more than 30 per cent among men and by about 17 per cent among women. “Declines in death rates have been largely driven by decreases in lung cancer incidence and mortality, so tobacco control in general has had a big impact on our death rates,” Smith said, especially among men, who historically had higher smoking rates than their female counterparts. Increased rates of screening for

breast cancer and improved treatments have also bolstered survival among women. Still, four cancers — prostate, breast, lung and colorectal — continue to top the list of the most common malignancies, which together are expected to account for more than half the cancer diagnoses in 2017. Lung cancer continues to take a huge toll: more people are predicted to die of the disease this year (21,100) than from a combination of the other three cancers (19,200 in total). Sarah Metcalfe, of Ottawa, is all too familiar with the ravages of cancer, which has affected eight people in her family. When she was a child, an aunt died of breast cancer. But cancer really hit home when Metcalfe was a new mom in her early 30s and her husband developed osteosarcoma in his upper arm, which was successfully treated with a bone transplant and long courses of “dramatic” chemotherapy. About the same time, three uncles succumbed to lung cancer, mostly due to smoking, and then her father developed fatal colon cancer. “I thought that’s got to be it now,” said Metcalfe, 58. But is was not to be: her brother was subsequently diagnosed with skin cancer, though he is “doing well,” she said. “And then I had my turn.” In 2011, Metcalfe learned she had breast cancer. “Just as I’d finished treatment, my mom found a lump on her thigh” that turned out to be a soft-tissue sarcoma. Despite treatment, the cancer spread and her mother died about two years later. “That’s it so far,” said Metcalfe, who as the owner of two women’s fitness centres in part credits regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet with her fiveyear survival. “terrorism offences” following an attack with a van on Muslims in north London, UK police have said. The driver slammed the vehicle into worshippers shortly after midnight on Monday as they left late-night prayers at the Muslim Welfare House and the nearby Finsbury Park Mosque, one of the biggest in Britain. A man, who had earlier suffered a heart attack, died at the scene on Seven Sisters Road, but it was not immediately clear if he was killed by the attacker’s actions. Eight people were taken to hospital. The Metropolitan police said the driver was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, but he was later charged with the “commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder”. “At this stage in the investigation, it is believed that the suspect acted alone but we are, of course, investigating all the circumstances leading up to the attack,” the force said in a statement. The attacker was not named by police. British media identified him as Darren Osborne, a white man who lived in the Welsh capital, Cardiff. Police said all the victims were from the Muslim community and extra patrols would be deployed to reassure the public, especially those observing Ramadan. The use of a vehicle to mow down pedestrians drew parallels with a deadly attack on London Bridge earlier this month. In that incident, three men drove a van into pedestrians before embarking on a stabbing spree, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group. In March, London was hit with another ISILclaimed car and knife attack, that one near the British Parliament in Westminster. This time the attacker deliberately targeted Muslims, police said. “More victims of a vehicle that leaves the road aimed as a weapon to kill and maim. But this time, the driver didn’t get away, he didn’t get shot, nor did he have any apparent intent to kill himself,” Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, reporting from Finsbury Park, said. The driver was grabbed at the scene by some of the Muslim worshippers and pinned down until police arrived, while others did what they could to help the wounded. After being seized, the suspect said he had wanted to kill “many Muslim people,” one witness told journalists. “Over the past weeks and months, Muslims have endured many incidents of Islamophobia and this is the most violent manifestation to date,” said Harun Khan, head of the Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella body. Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, described the attack as “cowardly”. “Our community is in shock,” he said, urging people attending prayers to remain vigilant. UK Prime Minister Theresa May condemned Monday’s attack as “sickening”, saying Britain’s determination to fight “terrorism, extremism and hatred ... must be the same, whoever is responsible”. “This was an attack on Mus-

lims near their place of worship,” said May who later visited the mosque. Human rights lawyer Arsalan Iftikhar said it was “about time” that authorities called such attacks against Muslims “acts of terrorism”. “For so many years, there have been coordinated attacks against Muslims, Arabs and South Asians all across the West that were never called ‘acts of terrorism’. So finally, for the first time ever, I’ve seen this double standard been lifted,” he told Al Jazeera from Washington, DC. “It’s important to keep in mind that what we saw in London at the Finsbury Park Mosque is not an isolated incident,” he added. In the days after the London Bridge attack, authorities reported a 40-percent increase in racist incidents in the capital and a five-fold increase in anti-Muslim incidents across Britain. This month alone, a Muslim woman wearing a headscarf told police in Lancashire her car was struck by a bag of vomit. Worshippers at the Omar Faruque mosque in Cambridge found strips of ham attached to their vehicles. Several Muslim families have reported receiving letters warning, “You are no longer welcome in this country.” Scores say they have been spat on. In the United States, two men were killed last month after intervening when a male white supremacist began shouting antiMuslim abuse at teenagers on a train in Portland, Oregon. According to the AmericanIslamic Relations Council, there has been a 57 percent rise in what it calls “anti-Muslim bias incidents” since 2015. “It’s about high time that these acts of terrorism are called ‘terrorism’, and not only called ‘terrorism’ when Muslims are the perpetrators,” Iftikhar said. “The majority of the population [in the West] doesn’t want to see criminal acts of mass murder committed by people who look like them to be labeled ‘acts of terrorism’ they are very quick to label ‘acts of terrorism’ against people who are olive-skinned, with ethnic-sounding names,” he added. “This is something that Muslim public intellectuals, thought leaders, activists and religious scholars have been talking about since the 9/11 [attacks in New York]. “The term ‘terrorism’, sadly, in our western sociopolitical zeitgeist has been coopted to only apply when brown Muslim men commit acts of mass murder, and not when right-wing, white supremacists terrorists do the same. Syrian regime forces resume bombardment of Deraa

Government air and artillery bombardments hit rebel-held areas of the Syrian city of Deraa, on the border with Jordan, on Tuesday after a two-day ceasefire expired, witnesses and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. A witness and two rebel fighters in Deraa said the army and its allies had resumed air and artillery bombardments in the city and the narrow strip of countryside separating it from the border. At least six raids took place in Gharz in east Deraa and in the old quarter of the city, where the army resumed efforts to break rebel lines, the rebels said. The witness said that barrel bombs, artillery shells and rockets were used in the bombardment. Clashes took place near a military base southwest of the city near the border with Jordan, the witness added. If the army takes rebel-held parts of Deraa and the few kilometres between it and the border, it would split rebel areas of

southeast Syria in half. The Syrian military could not be reached for comment on the renewed action, which took place as US and Russian officials were holding talks on creating a “de-escalation zone” in southwestern Syria that would include Deraa. US and Russian officials agreed a ceasefire, which ended on Monday, during talks in Amman aimed at strengthening goodwill before more detailed negotiations on setting up the “de-escalation zone”, diplomats in Jordan said. On Saturday the Syrian army said it would suspend combat operations in Deraa for 48 hours in order to support “reconciliation efforts”. Rebels in the city and other residents have said this month that the army’s bombardment of Deraa has intensified and claiming that the government brought more troops to the city. Source: Al-Jazeera

Bill C-6 to Become Law on June 19, Changing Canada’s Citizenship Act

“W

e want all permanent residents, if possible, to become Canadians,” said Canada’s Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen, at a recent conference in Toronto, and now the process will become quicker and simpler for immigrants to the country. Bill C-6 — which, among other changes, will decrease the amount of time new immigrants have to wait before becoming eligible to obtain Canadian citizenship — is scheduled to receive Royal Assent this evening (June 19), the final step before the bill may become law. Under the new law, immigrants will now have to accumulate 1,095 days, or three years, within a five-year period before being eligible for citizenship, instead of the 1,460 days required within six years under the previous act. This provision had been brought in by the previous Conservative government in June, 2014. C-6 will also: Allow permanent residents who had spent time in Canada on temporary status, such as on a work or study permit, to count up to 365 days of this temporary status towards the residency requirement. Remove the ‘intent to reside’ provision, which previously required new citizens to state that they intended to reside in Canada. Eliminate the government’s ability to revoke

citizenship from naturalized citizens who hold dual citizenship on national security grounds, which the now-governing Liberals had said created a two-tiered citizenship system when in opposition. Permit children under the age of 18 to apply for citizenship without the support or consent of their parents. Give individuals who lost their citizenship on the grounds that it was obtained fraudulently the right to appeal that decision in Federal Court. Though C-6 is scheduled to receive Royal Assent on June 19, it remains to be seen when the government may bring into force certain clauses contained within the bill. These may be brought into force at a later date. Canadian citizenship Citizens of Canada obtain all of the rights and responsibilities that come with this status, including political rights, such as the right to vote and stand for office, as well as residency rights, without the need to accumulate days of residency in Canada (a requirement for permanent residents who wish to retain that status). In addition, Canadian citizens may apply for a Canadian passport, one of the most valuable passports globally. C-6 will finally be law Having first been passed by the House of

Canada: Facts

Commons 12 months ago, many immigrants and their families have been waiting patiently for C-6 to receive Royal Assent, the final step in a bill becoming law. After passing through the House, the bill was read in the Senate, which passed amendments to the initial text and successfully put it to a vote. The House, which has a Liberal majority, accepted two of the three amendments, covering the juvenile eligibility provision and the appeal process mentioned above, after which the bill returned to the Senate and passed once again. A third amendment initially passed in the Senate, which would have changed the age requirements for immigrants to prove language ability and knowledge of Canada, was not supported by the government, and will therefore not be included in the bill that will receive Royal Assent on June 19. Under the new law, applicants aged 18 to 54 will be required to prove language ability and knowledge of Canada. The Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, is scheduled to grant Royal Assent to C-6, among other important bills, at 7 p.m. EST in the Senate Chamber on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The bill will therefore become law before Parliament’s summer break, which begins later this week. A new law, a new calculator

Palestinian tries to stab Israeli soldiers in West Bank, shot dead: army

JERUSALEM: Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian who tried to stab them in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, the Israeli military said, and the Palestinian health ministry confirmed a Palestinian had been killed. The Israeli military said the soldiers had been under immediate threat from the Palestinian when they opened fire on him. A wave of Palestinian street attacks that began in October 2015 has slowed in recent months but not stopped. At least 253 Palestinians and one Jordanian citizen have been killed since

the violence began. Israel says at least 171 of those killed were carrying out attacks while others died during clashes and protests. Thirty-eight Israelis, two American tourists and a British student have been killed in Palestinian stabbings, shootings and car-rammings. Israel blames the violence on incitement by the Palestinian leadership, while the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank, says desperation over Israeli occupation of land sought by Palestinians for

a state is the cause. US-brokered peace talks between the sides broke down in 2014. Palestinians want to establish an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East War. US President Donald Trump has vowed to try and reach a “historic deal” between the sides. His Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt met Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Tuesday and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner was due in the region on Wednesday. Reuters

Coalition shoots down Iran-made drone in Syria

WASHINGTON: A US warplane shot down an Iranian-made drone operated by pro-regime forces in southern Syria early Tuesday, officials said, in the latest incident in rising tensions between the two sides. It comes days after a US warplane shot down a Syrian government fighter jet in the north of the country, prompting a furious reaction from Russia. Moscow has now suspended an incident hotline intended to prevent confrontations in Syria’s crowded air space, and warned it could consider US-led coalition planes “targets.” The rising tensions prompted Australia to announce it was suspending its participation in air missions over Syria as part of the USled coalition fighting the Daesh group. In Tuesday’s incident, the US-led coalition said an F-15E Strike Eagle jet destroyed an armed Shahed-129 drone in the early hours of the morning as it neared the Al-Tanaf base along Syria’s eastern border. “It displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces,” the statement said. A US military official told AFP the drone was “on a run toward our folks to drop a munition on them” and was shot down in self-defense. Coalition forces are using the Al-Tanaf base by Syria’s borders with Jordan and Iraq to train anti-jihadist Syrian fighters and stage

attacks against Daesh. But their presence there has led to a series of confrontations with pro-regime forces, including on June 8 when a US plane also downed a drone after it dropped munitions near Al-Tanaf. That incident followed two others involving US fire against pro-regime forces on the ground as they came close to the garrison. Tensions have also flared between US forces and the Syrian regime further north, where the coalition is supporting an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters battling to oust Daesh from the city of Raqqa. On Sunday, a US fighter jet downed a Syrian government warplane for the first time in the

country’s conflict south of Raqqa, sparking an angry reaction from regime ally Russia. Moscow said it was suspending an incident hotline set up two years ago and warned that it would consider international aircraft operating in central Syria “aerial targets.” Washington said it would “work diplomatically and militarily... to reestablish deconfliction” but Moscow continued to take a hard line Tuesday even before the latest incident. “It is absolutely illegal,” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Tuesday of the presence of American forces in Syria. “There has been neither a Security Council decision, nor a request from the official authorities of the Syrian Arab Republic as a sovereign state,” Russia’s Interfax news reported. The growing tensions come as the coalition supports the Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighting to take Raqqa from Daesh. The SDF now control four neighborhoods in the city, and on Tuesday also advanced along its southern outskirts, moving closer to completely encircling Raqqa. Syria’s government is not involved in the operation and is instead looking further east to the largely Daesg-held oil-rich province of Deir Ezzor. Its forces are moving on three fronts, south of Raqqa city, through the central Badia de-

sert region, and along the eastern border. And it is on the Raqqa and eastern border fronts where the advances have brought the regime into conflict with US-led forces. On June 9, despite the series of engagements with US forces at Al-Tanaf, the regime skirted around the base to arrive at the Iraqi border for the first time since 2015. The move effectively blocks international forces and their local partners in the garrison, and prevents them from themselves advancing toward Deir Ezzor. Despite the increasing number of incidents, analysts say neither Syria’s regime nor Washington currently wants a major confrontation. “It doesn’t look like anyone currently intends to deliberately escalate further, but when you’ve got these little skirmishes... the risk is that you can end up in an escalation by accident,” said Sam Heller, a Syria expert at The Century Foundation. More than 320,000 people have been killed since Syria’s conflict began with anti-government demonstrations in March 2011. It has became a complex war drawing in multiple foreign players, including Russia, which launched a military campaign to support the regime in 2015 that has helped the government recapture large swathes of territory. On the recommendation of Baabul Ilm Education Society’s directors Simon Fraser University Decorated

Asma Jahangir with an Honorary Degree of Doctors of Law

By Dr. Mohammad Akbar FU’s honorary degree of doctorate is the highest honour conferred by the University. Honorary degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals in recognition of their outstanding services to the humanity. This year the honorary degree of doctorate in law was awarded to Asma Jahangir, the renowned lawyer and distinguished human rights activist from Pakistan. Dr. Zareen Naqvi, one of the directors of Baabul Ilm Education Society nominated Asma Jahangir for this award. Asma Jahangir is the first Pakistani woman to have received this highest honour by Simon Fraser University. The Chancellor of the university, Dr. Anne Giardini, in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, The Honourable Judith Guichon, and more than 2,500 audience invited Dr. Zareen Naqvi to present the honorary degree candidate, Asma Jahangir. In her introduction of Asma Jahangir, Dr. Naqvi highlighted the long and hard struggle that Asma Jahangir has undertaken to protect the rights of Pakistani women, children, and minorities for four decades. Dr. Zareen mentioned that Asma Jahangir was born in a prosperous and politically active family in Lahore. Asma watched her father repeatedly jailed or put under house arrest in support of his political beliefs. These events had a tremendous impact on Asma’s life and upbringing. In 1980, Asma Jahangir along with her sister and other fellow activists formed the Women’s Action Forum to cam-

S

paign against discriminatory legislation in Pakistan. She resisted the attempts by General Zia ul Haq’s military regime to mix religion with law and undermine women’s rights with courage and determination. That struggle made Asma Jahangir the most recognized faces of Pakistan’s women rights movement. Dr. Naqvi further said that Asma Jahangir has a long list of impressive accomplishments: she is the co-founder of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, first women president of the Supreme Court’s bar association, co-chairperson of the South Asia Forum for Human rights, vice president of the International Federation of Human Rights, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion, and the list goes on. Ms. Jahangir has been fearless in her dedication to raise the human rights standards in Pakistan. She has been recognized with many national and international awards, Dr. Naqvi concluded. Dr. Naqvi requested the chancellor of the Simon Fraser University to confer upon Asma Jahangir the degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Dr. Asma Jahangir in her convocation address said that she is humbled and encouraged to receive this honor. She said that none of us may be able to escape deteriorating global trends in respecting human dignity unless we actively promote and protect human rights at the international level. Global consensus on universal values of human rights is under severe threat. Most worryingly, discrimination on the basis of race and religion is being justified in the name of security. Religious intolerance has given

rise to extremism. Increasing terror related violence and internal conflicts are inflicting severe hardships on the lives of several innocent people. It continues to traumatize several hundred women and children on a daily basis with no end in sight. Technology has brought the images of this misery in every household. None of us can any longer plead ignorance to the pain being suffered by millions of people because of their religion, race or belief or for the perverse manner in which violence is being inflicted in the name of religion. Both are equally deplorable. She further said that, I am disturbed that policies are being made by world leaders for the security of their respective countries, rather than for the protection of all humanity. A far greater challenge confronts us today -to uphold the values of human rights for all but at the same time to marginalize the forces of intolerance and militancy. Addressing the graduates she said I would only like to encourage you to remain positive. The world has seen worse travesty but eventually common sense and a commitment to justice has always prevailed. You have an onerous task ahead; to speak for the voices, to lead public opinion for those who are oppressed, and to continue to advance the cause of justice, equality and peace. You are the leaders of a better tomorrow, she concluded. Also present at the convocation ceremony were Dr. Mohammad Tariq, Counsel General of Pakistan, directors of Baabul Ilm Education Society and members of the Pakistani community.

EID-UL FITR Mubarak (& Takbirat of Eid)

Ra

madan…

the month of the Qur’an… the month of repentance… the month when we renounce worldly pleasures and hold ourselves in check… the month when the soul is at peace… the month of Qur’an recitation, attendance of religious circles of knowledge, nightly worship and many you can from rewardable acts of worship and remember to continue even after Ramadan is over. Muslims across Canada and the world will be watching for the new moon after sunset on Saturday, June 24th, 2017, to determine the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the celebration of (Eid-ul-Fitr) which will either be Sunday, June 25th or Monday, June 26th. The festive day of Eid ulFitr marks the end of Ramadan. It’s a time when Muslims visit one another strengthening the bonds of kin and friendship in the community. During this Holiday, Muslims greet each other by saying “Eid Mubarak,” meaning “Blessed Eid” and “Taqabbal-Allahu Ta^ atakum” meaning “May God accept your good deeds.” On this great and glorious day of ^Eid, it’s an occasion of happiness and joy. Only a couple more days remain, may Allah bless us with seeing and supplicating in the Night of Al-Qadar ameen! Brothers and sisters, do your utmost to capture all you can from what is remaining. As Muslims, collectively, we feel joy and happiness in this world when we apply all efforts to obey Allah and perform good deeds to gain reward and success in the Hereafter. Muslims have 3 Festivities: 1. Friday 2. Two Eids: Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha. 1. When God created the heavens and earths in 6 days – Day 6 was Friday. On that special day, the last TYPE of creation to be created in Paradise was – Prophet Adam, the first Human. He was created from soil of different colors and different textures mixed with water from paradise; this accounts for the various races and temperaments of people. All nationalities are descendants of Adam, Muslim men and women worldwide of all ages, races, colors, nationalities, social backgrounds, economic statuses, languages, and political affiliations are all united by their belief that No one is God but Allah and Muhammad is His Prophet and Messenger.

mesAllah sent 124,000 prophets and 313 mes sengers, 25 of which are mentioned by name in the Quran. All of whom were Muslims and all were followers of Islam. None of the Prophets were Jewish, Christian or other than that. They were all unified sharing and adhering to the same belief in Allah Subhanu wa ta^ala mentioned below and none of the Prophets worshipped other than Allah: •Allah is Perfect; He has no flaws, no weakbignesses and does not change. Change is the big gest indicator of weakness and weakness is not attributed to Godhood. Allah is perfect and has the perfect attributes that do not resemble the attributes of the creations in any way. •God created everything and does not need any of His creations. •Allah is one without a partner, this means that Allah does not have a gender; He is not “a Father” or “a Mother” and does not have a wife, a mother, a father, or children (offspring); He has no equal or partner. Allah does not divide into parts. No creation has “a part of Allah” in them, nor will any creation be attributed with Godhood. •Allah existed eternally before He created any of the places. Allah has always existed and there was no Paradise, no skies, no Earth, no ^Arsh (throne) or planets, no light or darkness, no upper level or lower levels. He is exiting now as He was before creating places – without a place. Allah does not have a body, not a large or small body; not a solid (human, ^Arsh-Grand Throne, trees, etc.) or intangible body (light, air, spirit)… All creations need to be in a place because all creations contain physical matter. •God is eternal, without a beginning and everlasting, without an end. •Allah has all-encompassing Power over absolutely everything and everyone. •Allah is unlike the creations in any way whatsoever (Surat Al-Shura, Ayah 11) – Everything you imagine in your mind Allah does not look like it in any way. •Allah sees and hears all the seeable and hearable things without eyes, ears, or any other organs or instruments. •Allah is attributed with life unlike ours – without spirit, blood, flesh, and bones. •Whatever Allah wills to be shall be and whatever Allah did not will to be shall never be. Nothing comes into existence without God’s will – no cure or illness, birth or death, supplication or Du^ah happens without the Will, Knowledge and Creating of Allah. Even if a person supplicated to Allah on the Night of Qadar, if what is being asked was not eternally willed to happen, the supplication will not be granted. Why? Because the Will of Allah never changes, not even for the supplication of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him who is the best.

Moreover, Friday also signifies the day that Adam was sent from Paradise to earth and it’s the day in which this world will come to its end, and the Day of Judgement begins. 2. As for the other two festivities that occur annually, the first of which is ^Eid al-Fitr celebrated immediately after fasting the month of Ramadan, and the other ^Eid is the day of ^Eid al-Adha after the completion of pilgrimage (Hajj). How relieved will you be as a believer on the Day of Judgment when you see in your book of deeds the reward you were granted for fasting the month of Ramadan properly, and adhering to its requisites and perquisites that Allah has ordained? How honored will you feel to enter a special gate in Paradise called “Ar-Rayyan” that is exclusive for those Muslims to enter who fasted Ramadan in this life? How grateful will you feel as a Believer on the Day of Judgement knowing you made all efforts to use your time and body wisely in obedience to Allah, by learning and teaching Religious knowledge in order to protect yourself and those you love from the severe torture of hell? Prophet Muhammad said what means: “The believer should always be diligent in acquiring the knowledge of the religion for this will surely lead to Paradise.” For this reason, I chose to include such valuable Religious knowledge (Tawhid) in this article, to honor the hadith of our Prophet (Peace be upon him), and spend our final days leading up to Eid Al-Fitr in acts of worship. Dear brothers and sisters, remember to fast the 6 days of the month of Shawwal in accordance with the Hadith, where the Prophet peace be upon him said, “whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and follows it with fasting six days of Shawwal, would be almost similar to fasting a full year.” It is not a condition for these six days to be in succession, they can be done sporadically throughout the whole month of Shawwal. In the end, I remind you that Imam alHasan, the son Aliyy may Allah raise their ranks said: “Every day in which a person has not disobeyed Allah, is a festive day for that person.” O Allah help us pray at night, fast and maintain family ties by the honor granted to our Master Muhammad, (Peace be upon him) and bless us with the opportunity to once again be blessed to fast Ramadan next year and gain from its tremendous blessings – ameen! SHAHI TUKRAY

Takbirat of Eid is a confirmed Sunnah (rec-ommended good deed) and it begins in the night of Fitr until the beginning of the ^Eid prayer on the Day of Eid. It’s recommended to pay Zakat al-Fitr on the Day of Eid prior to Eid Prayer. Here in Canada the common staple food is ‘wheat’ and the zakat is 1 Sa^ (4 mudd) of wheat or its monetary equivalent (double handful of average man’s size hand) which is approximately $5 per person. One intends to give Zakat for his body for the sake of Allah and what is extra is Sadaqa. Allahu akbar Allahu akbar Allahu akbar La ilaha illallah Allahu akbar Allahu akbar wa lillahil-Hamd Allahu akbaru kabira wal-Hamdulillah kathira Wa subhanallahi wa bihamdihi bukratan wa ‘asila La ilaha illallah wahdah Sadaqa wa^dah wa nasara ^abdah wa a^aza junadhu wa hazamal-‘ahzaba wahdah La ilaha illallah Wala na^budu ila iyyah mukhlisina lahuddina walaw karihal-kafirun Allahumma salli ^ala sayyidina Muhammad Wa ^ala ‘Ali sayyidina Muhammad wa ^ala As-habi Muhammad Wa ^ala ‘ansari Muhammad wa ^ala ‘Azwaji Muhammad Wa ^ala Dhuriyyati Muhammadin wa sallim tasliman kathira Meaning of Takbirat of ^Eid: Allah is Great, Allah is Great, Allah is Great. No one is God except Allah; Allah is Great, Allah is Great, Allah is Great; Praise be to Allah; Allah is Great. A lot of praise to Allah (is due); Praise be to Allah in the morning and in the evening. No one is God but Allah; He fulfilled His promise and gave victory to His slave. He strengthened His soldiers, He alone defeated the Ahzab. No one is God except Allah. We do not worship anyone but Him; Our worship is dedicated only to Him, Even if the blasphemers hate it. We ask Allah to raise the rank of our Master Muhammad, and the Al of Muhammad, and the Companions of Muhammad, and the supporters of Muhammad, and the wives of Muhammad, and the descendants of Muhammad and save the nation of Muhammad.

WOMEN

Essential Steps!

By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor

W

e often focus on building relationships with others that we forget the essential first step: being friends of ourselves. That is the crucial first step if we are to have good relationships with others. How can we have good relationships with others if we don’t even have good relationship with ourselves? 1. Forgive yourself You may have made those mistakes in the past, but is there anything you can do about them? I don’t think so, except learning from them. It’s true that you are not perfect, but neither is everybody else. It’s normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness. 2. Accept things you can’t change There are some things you cannot change, such as your background and your past. So learn to accept them. You will feel much relieved if you treat things you can’t change the way they deserve: just accept them, smile, and move on. 3. Focus on your strengths Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. You always have some strength which give you a unique combination nobody else have. Recognize your strengths and build your life around them. 4. Write your success stories One reason we may not like ourselves is we are too focused on what we don’t have that we forget about what we have. So make a list of your achievements; write your success stories. They do not have to be big things; there are a lot of small but important achievements in our life. For example, if

you have some good friends, that’s already an achievement. If you have a good family, that is also an achievement. 5. Stop comparing yourself with others You are unique. You can never be like other people, and neither can other people be like you. The way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. Instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. You have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so it’s useless to compare yourself with others. 6. Always be true to yourself You don’t like other people lying to you; similarly, you won’t like yourself if you know that you lie to yourself. Whether you realize it or not, that gives your mind a reason not to like yourself. That’s why it’s important to always be true to yourself. In whatever you do, be honest and follow your conscience. Remember this quote by Abraham Lincoln: I desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end…I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside of me. An Iraqi Man’s Struggle as an Illegal Immigrant in Canada.

I

f you think there is nothing worse than being a refugee, think again. Refugees who go through the proper channels to immigrate to a safe place get accepted into countries such as Canada. Such refugees are often supported with a monthly stipend, are given access to healthcare as well as work permit allowing them a chance to create roots in a new country. Kamran Barakat is an Iraqi man who wishes he was a such a refugee. He is an illegal immigrant currently living in Surrey, B.C. Kamran arrived in Vancouver in November, 2016, on a tourist visa with the hope that one day he will acquire permanent residence in Canada. That hope may be too far-fetched but it is what keeps him going. Kamran fled the war-torn Iraq to seek asylum in Canada and plans to eventually sponsor his wife whom he left behind. But Kamran didn’t take the traditional route of filling out paperwork and seeking asylum in Canada. The city he belongs to in Iraq is not currently under siege which is why he thought his application would not have been accepted. Moving to Canada illegally was his only choice. Karman flew from Iraq to Chicago, from Chicago to Seattle and then crossed the border from Blaine into B.C. He then surrendered himself to Canadian border security and asked for asylum. Some would call

Eid Mubarak! By : Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker amadan came and now is already about to end. But not the teachings of it. This pearls of guidance for life, prayers, helps us other eleven months to live our life on a straight path. After fasting for 30 days, comes the day of celebration and praise of God. Blessed is the house where whole family is together in praying, fasting and mak making du’a. Even young children prepare in cooking and other activities. Caring is also sharing. Those small ges gestures such as preparing for iftari, thinking about cooking favourite dishes, inviting friends and relatives, adjusting to the new routines these all actions penetrates in our sub conscious mind. When that child grows up, he or she is going to follow that behaviour as well. The best way to fight depression is action, activity and taking interest in life. Here comes the final part, celebration of Eid. Shopping for clothes, jewellry and other things brings great joy, effort and planning. For children, the best part is getting ‘Eidi’. Let us give our children, the present of being religious in rightful way by understanding religion, right concept of God and His teachings, kindness by giving charity to the poor, sharing by thinking of less fortunate people, caring by looking after family members, serving them during fasting. Loving God and His followers, in general respecting everyone. The sense

R

of belonging in a family gives us tability of not being left out and prevents us from depression. R a m a d a n teaches us discipline and self control. We use water daily for our needs but we do not let a single sip of water enter our throats and stomach. We prepare lots of tasy food but we do not eat it until sunset. This self-restraint controls our nafs and helps us in our life when we are tempted by wrong things. We refrain ourselves. We do not hault our lives in Ramadan but we limit ourselves to things that focus more on the religion, such as listening and reciting Quran, hadith of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and the rest. When we fast by our own will, we realize what hunger is, we can at least have some idea of what it is like when other people don’t have food for days and weeks. The benefits are endless. Let us all celebrate Eid with love, togetherness and happiness. For any inquiries please email at :asmashums@gmail.com

“Worse Off Than a Refugee”

Kamran an economic migrant seeking to live in a country with better work opportunity and overall higher standard of living but that’s only part of the picture. One of the most heart-wrenching accounts of illegal immigrants that we recently witnessed is that of Alan Kurdi, a three-year-old Syrian boy of Kurdish descent, who washed up on a beach in Turkey when his boat capsized on its way to Greece. Kamran is also of Kurdish descent but he has more in common with Alan than just heritage. Both their countries are engulfed in war. Both their countries are on the brink of a war-driven starvation. Both their countries are plagued with the presence of the terrorist group ISIS. Muslim Food Bank & Community Services caseworker, Farhad Rouhani, was handed Kamran’s case days after his arrival in Canada. Farhad understands what drove Kamran to leave his life behind and move to Canada as he is keenly aware of the instability in Iraq. “The situation there changes day to day,” Farhad says. Farhad didn’t wait long to set up his first meeting with him. He remembers Kamran being sad and depressed but more than that he was uncertain of what’s to come. “He was new and he missed his family. Everything was a big question mark to him.” Farhad has been in the same boat many times in his life. His career as an engineer took him from his native Iran to Europe, the US and Canada. Each time he he had to

move to a new place, he was uprooted from the life that he had built. He didn’t just miss the familiarity of the place he left behind, he also missed the friends he had made and the memories that were etched in his mind. When Farhad saw the vacancy for a Persianspeaking caseworker on the Muslim Food Bank Facebook page, he grabbed the opportunity right away. Farhad helps interpret for Kamran as they share the same language. Farhad was pleasantly surprised to hear Kamran speak Persian with the Iranian dialect. When Farhad asked how Kamran knew the slangs so well, he told him that living close to the Iranian border, he got TV signal from across the border. “Kamran told me him and his wife watched Iranian TV shows 24/7,” Farhad says with a sparkle in his eyes. Farhad wanted Kamran to see him as a friend because he knew that Kamran’s biggest need is someone he can share his feelings with. “At first, I provided him emotional support but as time went by I started letting him know about available resources.” Farhad showed Kamran how he can search places on Google Maps and check bus timings. Farhad also found out that Kamran can speak to a psychologist so he can deal with the circumstances he has found himself in. Besides being a librarian in Iraq, Kamran also worked in tiling. Since Farhad has a lot of connections in the real estate market, he has promised to help Kamran get a job in tiling as soon as he gets his work permit.

Opening Soon

Kamran recently had a court hearing in which he was able to present his story to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. He is now waiting for the court’s verdict. If the court rules in his favor, he will be allowed to stay and sponsor his wife. If not, Kamran will be deported back to Iraq. Back to the devastation of war. Back to the uncertainty of how long him and his wife will stay safe. These are real stories where our volunteers have an impact on members of our community helping them progress in their lives. InshaAllah next week we will bring you another story. Please join us to have a purpose in your life to make a difference in the lives of your brothers and sisters by coming to our events and registering as a volunteer or donating to your organization, the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society (usually referred to as Muslim Food Bank) at www.muslimfoodbank. com/donate. 25 SPORTS Champions Trophy: Inspired Pakistan thrash India by 180 runs Ramadan 28. 1438 June 23, 2017

Pakistan produced an incredible display to thrash fierce rivals India and win the Champions Trophy at The Oval. Fakhar Zaman hit a spectacular century to propel Pakistan to 338-4 in the scorching south London sunshine. Mohammad Amir then tore through the India top order to help reduce the defending champions to 54-5. India eventually limped to 158, Pakistan winning by 180 runs to take their first global 50-over title since 1992. That Pakistan lifted the trophy was surprising enough - at eighth in the world they began as the lowest-ranked team in the tournament - but it is the way they demolished the strong favourites will live long in the memory. Firstly Fakhar flayed the ball all around the The Oval, a maiden century

coming in his fourth ODI after Pakistan were invited to bat. And then Amir, in the same city in which he committed the spot-fixing offences that led to a five-year ban, found precious movement to destroy the vaunted India batting line-up. The rest of the Pakistan attack were irresistible, backed up by excellent fielding, all in front of a vibrant, raucous and enthusiastic capacity crowd. A quarter-of-a-century ago, Pakistan came from the brink of elimination to win the World Cup, inspired by captain Imran Khan telling them to “fight like cornered tigers”. Here, they recovered from a humbling defeat by India in their opening game with similar tenacity. Fakhar was installed at the top of the order, man of the tournament Hasan

Ali fronted a talented pace attack and energetic captain Sarfraz Ahmed marshalled a team that grew in confidence and momentum. World number ones South Africa were beaten in the rain before Pakistan edged past Sri Lanka to reach the last four. England, the much-fancied hosts, were brushed aside in Cardiff before the an incredible performance in the final - their biggest margin of victory over India in an ODI. Though Fakhar had illuminated The Oval, there was a suspicion that Pakistan’s total was within reach of India’s stellar batting. That was until Amir got to work. Rohit Sharma was pinned lbw by the third ball of the innings, only for Azhar Ali to spill a straightforward first-slip chance off India captain and master run-chaser Virat Kohli. However, from the very next ball, Kohli was squared up and athletically held at point by Shadab Khan, before Shikhar Dhawan edged behind. After Yuvraj Singh was given lbw on review to leg-spinner Shadab and MS Dhoni holed out off the pace of Hasan, the contest was as good as done. Hardik Pandya’s six-hitting in a 43-ball 76 always seemed likely to be in vain. It was not long after he was run out that last man Jasprit Bumrah flapped at Hasan - and the Pakistan celebrations begun. India, favouring a chase,

gave up the chance to bat first on a run-filled surface and were made to pay by left-hander Fakhar. He was reprieved on three, caught behind off a Bumrah no-ball, and went on to carve, slice and belt his way to a 92-ball century. Fakhar shared an opening stand of 128 with Azhar Ali and, after a mix-up that saw Azhar run out, sprang to life. At one point, he took 32 runs in the space of eight legal deliveries. When Fakhar miscued the impressive Bhuvneshwar Kumar to a back-tracking Ravindra Jadeja at point, India pulled themselves back into contention. Mohammad Hafeez made an unbeaten 57 from 37 balls and Babar Azam 46 from 52, but India’s canny death bowling seemed to have kept them in contention. As it turned out, Pakistan had far too many for them. Source: BBC News
