SEMI-ANNUAL Pentagon report to the US Congress on the security situation in Afghanistan has included a troubling assertion about Pakistan-US ties. The report has warned that the US is prepared to take “unilateral steps” in areas where Pakistan differs with the US in how to address the regional militancy threat. While the report has also stressed the need for dialogue and cooperation with Pakistan, the mere suggestion of unilateral military action inside Pakistan by the US against militant targets is likely to be met with hostility. The presidency of Donald Trump has already upended many diplomatic norms, while a more militarised approach

America’s Warning
against militant threats that America perceives globally suggests a willingness to redefine red lines in ties with other countries. Pakistan must respond carefully to any invasive tactics that the US might attempt. The triangular relationship between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the US has had both legitimate and less legitimate complaints on all sides. With Pakistan continuing to suffer terrorist attacks, and credible intelligence suggesting that many of these originate in sanctuaries that antiPakistan militants have found in Afghanistan, it is clear that Pakistan itself faces a serious threat. Meanwhile, the repeated attempts to pin blame on Pakistan for failures of the US and
Kabul overlook a fundamental reality: eventually, there will have to be a political settlement in Afghanistan. Threatening Pakistan with unilateral action against militant networks that Pakistan is also expected to help bring to the negotiating table makes little sense. Where intelligence is shared with Pakistan of the genesis of certain attacks inside Afghanistan being traced back to its soil, Pakistan has for some years expressed a willingness to act. It has never been clear why that offer has not been taken up earnestly by Afghanistan or the US. In Afghanistan, the Trump administration seems destined to allow the US military greater leeway for at least the next two years, perhaps for the entire term of the current presidency.
There will likely be some gains. The military surge authorised by former US president Barack Obama was significantly larger, but the looser rules that this administration has set could allow the much smaller US military presence today to return the war in Afghanistan to a stalemate. That may trigger an eventual reassessment by the Afghan Taliban, Kabul and the US about the need to restart a dialogue process. It is towards that end that Pakistan must keep its focus. The Salala incident in 2011 and an incursion by US helicopters into South Waziristan in 2008 have already demonstrated how reckless action can have severe implications and consequences for all sides. ‘Bravo Brave Women’!
By: Gulshan Aalani The silence breaker brave women speaking up against the alleged sexual abusers- committed in their young age by the well known personalities and high profile men; are establishing a good example without a Gun or a Bomb in their hands but only the painful words of their suffering. As a matter fact even the wives and Children of the Molesters suffers a lot. This is a good lesson for mankind to be more vigilant and follow the rules of ethics and moral values ordained by the Divine authority. Who has handed over the Law of ‘code of conduct’ through the Divine Books. It is forbidden/harraam/sin to possess any woman without her consent. Most gruesome details of male and female se-ual assaults by such predators-molesters-the Drs.-Neurologist, and Massage Therapist revealed on Dr. Oz. Show and Oprah Network.
A female Dr. Ashton revealed that she never sees any patients without the Chaperon. Same rule was introduced to us the non-Muslims of ethnic community in E. Africa. Ironically, after converting to Islam I discovered the same rules of ethics and moral values in the Sharia/Divine law, which is most abused and hated by many who also hates the One Creator-GOD and has no idea who HE is. Some proclaims: ‘Man are high wired for such misconduct’: Some blame such unethical practices on today’s freedom and Social life style of Hollywood and Bollywood, dating and mating, Alcohol and Deadly drugs, but no one has the cure for such bad behavior and so the suffering of women and children continues. Evidently, such abuses happen in all the communities, in India women are rapped every minute, that has led some women’s groups to speak up against it, and demanding all the Alcohol shops to be closed. In every wars and any political disputes like in Syria, Myanmar-Rohingya, Bosnia, Congo, Africa etc the innocent civilians and refugees are raped, burnt alive and killed: Bill O’Reilly has repeatedly blamed reports of sexual misconduct on a politically motivated media. He admitted that he also blames a Higher
Power for the sexual misconduct allegations. “You know, am I mad at God? Yeah, I’m mad at Him: “I wish I had more protection. I wish this stuff didn’t happen. I can’t explain it to you. Yeah, I’m mad at Him”. None of these predators know HIM. “If only there were a little angel on his shoulder, keeping him from playing grabby hands with women who work for him”. Once we reject HIM and HIS Law, we loose the protection of Angels. Well, we know GOD’S answer would be that HE gave us the legislated Blue print of Divine Law of good conduct through the Bible and the Quran but we threw the Books behind our backs. We are given the ‘safety Net’ code to avoid such catastrophic actions of sins but mankind isn’t interested in using the safety Kit but live without faith and fear. Faith without fear of Creator-GOD is not the true faith but the cult.
Pakistan joins the international community
By: Media Section, Pakistan High Commission Ottawa Pakistan joins the international community in expressing its strong opposition and condemnation at the
decision of the US Administration to recognize the occupied city of Al Quds Al Sharif//Jerusalem as the socalled capital of Israel and the plan to relocate its Embassy there. It is deeply regrettable that pleas from States across the globe not to alter the legal and historical status of Al-Quds AlSharif have been ignored, more out of choice than necessity. This decision represents a serious violation of international law and applicable UN Security Council resolutions, more specifically UNSCR 478. It is a serious setback to the rule of law and international norms. It signals a severe blow to the Middle East peace process as well. Pakistan shares the international outrage and is deeply concerned over the implications of this decision for international peace and security, especially in the Middle East. Pakistan calls upon the UN Security Council to take cognizance of this situation and take steps in accordance with the UN Charter. Pakistan urges the United Sates to revisit its decision as soon as possible in order to avoid the potentially grave repercussions in the region and beyond. The Government of Pakistan welcomes the announcement by Turkey to convene an Extraordinary Islamic Summit next week to discuss this serious issue.
Victims recall horrors of Quetta church attack
“The cries of the injured still ring in my ears,” says Zeeshan Maseeh, his voice cracking, as he narrates his eyewitness account of Sunday’s horrific suicide attack on Quet-
ta’s Bethel Memorial Methodist Church. “I cannot forget the blood-stained clothes of the injured and their cries for help,” he says. Maseeh had been inside the church, attending Sunday Mass, when two terrorists from the militant Islamic State (IS) stormed the compound. As security officials posted to the church opened fire to repulse the attack, one of the terrorists detonated his suicide vest near the church hall’s door. He killed 9 and injured 50 others. The other was shot dead before he could cause more damage. “When the attack happened, there were around 400 people inside,” Balochistan Police Chief Moazzam Jah
Ansari tells DawnNews. “Police personnel quickly retaliated and killed one gunman at the church’s gate while another blew himself up inside the church’s compound,” Ansari adds. “The church was jam-packed when we heard the first shots,” recalls Kelvin, a senior photographer working with Urdulanguage newspaper Daily Intikhab. Kelvin was inside the church when the terrorists struck. “Then there was a huge blast as soon as we gathered together,” he says. “After the explosion, there was a large pool of blood in the compound where the injured and the dead lay,” he remembers. CCTV footage of the attack, which circulated widely on social media by
evening, shows two armed men throwing off their shawls to reveal guns and explosive vests as they approach the church. They start firing on the church compound, which is located on Quetta’s busy Zarghoon road. A person can be seen bolting the compound’s gate from the inside to thwart the attackers’ entry. Failing to breach the compound’s gate, one attacker jumps over the gate and opens it for his partner. The bullets are flying thick and heavy as policemen posted to the church retaliate. Footage from another camera shows a large explosion and smoke as debris flies out into the church compound. Source: Dawnnews.com

Bajwa says army not destabilizing civilian Govt.
ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and the rule of law and categorically denied the military’s role in destabilizing the civilian government. Speaking at an ‘in-camera session’ of the Senate Committee of the Whole, the army chief, who originally came to brief the legislators on national security issues, deliberated on a wide range of topics from politics and frayed civil-military ties to counterterrorism operations and foreign policy. He was accompanied by Inter-Services Intelligence chief Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar, Director General of Military Operations Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Military Intelligence Director General Maj Gen Asim Munir. The session continued for nearly four-and-a-half hours. Responding to a question by a ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leg-
islator, the army chief defended the brokering of the deal between the government and the organisers of the 22-day sit-in at Faizabad interchange, the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah. He said the situation could have aggravated had the military not played its part. Gen Bajwa, according to the senators who attended the committee’s session, said he firmly believed in democracy and supremacy of the Constitution. However, he did not deny mistakes in the past and, in a reference to generals Zia and Musharraf, reportedly said he could not be held responsible for others. He is reported to have even asked parliament to take the lead in framing foreign and security policies and vowed to implement them. Gen Bajwa was invited by Senate Chairman Mian Rabbani to share military’s position on certain key foreign policy and security issues. The official agenda of the meeting was to have a “briefing by the Chief of Army Staff and Director General Military Operations on the emerging national security paradigm for Pakistan with respect to recent visits and developments”. It was the first time that an army chief appeared before a Senate committee. The last time an army chief came to parliament for a briefing was in 2011 after the US raid on Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad when then army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI director general Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha were called to the joint sitting of parliament. Pakistan rejects ‘unfounded’ allegations made Salim in Trump’s first foreign policy Pakistan on Tuesday categorically rejected the allegations levelled in the Trump administration’s first foreign policy announced a day earlier, saying they “trivialise” its counterterrorism efforts and sacrifices to promote peace in the region. In an official response to Trump’s new national security strategy, which presses on Pakistan to intensify its action against militant groups it alleges are operating from Pakistani soil, the Foreign Office (FO) said the “unsubstantiated” and “unfounded” allegations are contrary to ground realities and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its counterterrorism efforts. “Pakistan rejects such unfounded accusations that belie facts on ground and trivialise Pakistan’s efforts for fighting terrorism,” said a statement issued by FO spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal. Pakistan has been at the forefront in the fight against terrorism and its cooperation resulted in the core of Al Qaeda being “decimated” from the region, the FO statement said. The FO claimed that the Afghan soil is being used by hostile elements against Pakistan despite substantial US presence, and “Pakistan continues to suffer at the hands of state-spon-

Shahbaz is next premier: Nawaz
LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has nominated his brother Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif as the candidate for the prime minister in the next elections. Nawaz announced this decision after a
meeting of PML-N bigwigs at his Jati Umra residence. According to sources present in the meeting, Nawaz praised the chief minister for his hard-working nature and devotion to public service. “Shahbaz has always worked to further the party policies for public welfare and this unflagging attitude earned him the opportunity to be trusted for a higher office. We are a democratic political party where everyone is free to voice their mind. Shahbaz has had difference of opinion over some issues yet his commitment to the party overrules all else, which is why he has never violated the party discipline,” said the former prime minister. He lauded Shahbaz’s vision of swift progress and development and the success he has achieved as chief minister and said there was no harm in consultation and/or agree-
ment with the younger brother. “Shahbaz Sharif has never disappointed me,” said the PML-N president. Putting his foot down regarding the party discipline, Nawaz said those who claimed to be in the PML-N should stand by the party and the party’s stance in testing times instead of creating and fanning discord. “Such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he warned and added that the dissenting statements were not being appreciated in the party. Nawaz warned that the orchestrators of the religious sit-in would [inevitably] understand the dangerous long-term consequences of this action. Talking about the future, he said the election campaign and movement for non-partisan across-theboard justice and supremacy of civilians in democracy would be run jointly. “These two principles of civilian supremacy
A day after the Supreme Court disqualified former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secretary general Jahangir Tareen for being ‘dishonest’, party chief Imran Khan has said he will keep the PTI leader “right next to” him.“For me it doesn’t matter whether you [Tareen] hold a position in PTI or are in Parliament, you will always remain right next to me as we build Naya Pakistan InshaAllah,” Imran tweeted on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Tareen resigned as the party’s general secretary after a meeting
with the PTI chairman. In his resignation letter, Tareen said it is inappropriate to hold public office after the apex court verdict. Despite earlier assurances of accepting the apex court’s verdict in letter and spirit, Imran said the former PTI secretary general was disqualified only on interpretation of trust deed and no financial wrongdoing was found against him. However, the apex court had termed Tareen ‘not an honest person’ and declared him ineligible for holding public office under Arti-
cle 62(1)(f) of the Constitution. He was convicted for deliberately giving a false statement before the higher judiciary to conceal the ownership of the £5 million worth property in the UK. On the contrary, Imran was declared ‘honest’ for not concealing facts as the top court accepted his stance over the purchase of Bani Gala estate after the sale of his London flat. in democracy and sanctity of vote will be the slogans for the 2018 election campaign,” he made it clear. The announcement has huge implications. At the one end, it announces a truce between the two brothers over the disagreements that had been widely reported by the media. The statements given by Maryam Nawaz, Shahbaz and Hamza Shahbaz after several meetings too hinted that both sides were trying to convince each other to adopt their stance. Nawaz’s decision on not nominating Shahbaz as the party head after his disqualification was also seen by some an outcome of the rift and the resultant distrust between the two. This announcement could very well be seen as an announcement of an end to that friction. Source: thenews.com

Despite last-minute snag, U.S. tax over- Qatar central bank to probe effort haul passes Senate, heads back to House to manipulate riyal The U.S. Senate approved sweeping tax legislation in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, sending the tax cut package back to the House of Representatives for a final vote later in the day. The Republicans’s drive to approve the biggest tax code rewrite in 30 years hit a snag earlier in the day, requiring another vote on in the House Wednesday and delaying what would be their first major legislative win under President Donald Trump. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed the tax package on Tuesday afternoon, sending the bill to the Senate, where a staff official ruled that three provisions of the House bill did not comply with the Senate’s complex rules, said Sen. Bernie Sanders. First the Senate to voted in favour of deleting the three offending provisions and then voted to pass the bill. The bill will be sent back to the House for another vote on Wednesday. The provisions in question deal with using educational savings accounts for home schooling and with private university endowments. The Senate parliamentarian’s ruling against the provisions threw a wrench into what would have been a day of celebration for Republicans. The bill passed the House earlier on Tuesday by a vote of 227-203, overcoming united opposition from Democrats and 12 Republicans who voted against it. Vice-President Mike Pence took the precaution of rescheduling a trip to Egypt and Israel for January so he would be on hand this week in case his tiebreaking voting power is needed to ensure Senate passage of the bill. Republicans, who control the 100-seat Senate by only a 52-48 margin, can afford to lose support from no more than two party lawmakers. Republican Sen. Jeff Flake was still uncommitted late on Monday. Sen. John McCain, who has brain cancer, was spending time with family in Arizona. The biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax system in more than 30 years includes steep tax cuts for corporations and wealthy
taxpayers, as well as temporary tax cuts for some individuals and families. It allows oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and repeals a federal fine imposed on Americans under Obamacare for not obtaining health insurance coverage, a change that could undermine the 2010 health-care law formally known as the Affordable Care Act. Middle-income households would see an average tax cut of $900 next year, while the wealthiest one per cent of Americans would see an average cut of $51,000, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Centre, a think-tank in Washington. Republicans insist the package will boost the economy and job growth. They also see the measure as key to retaining their majorities in the House and Senate in elections next November. Democrats say the bill will deepen the income gap between rich and poor Americans, while adding $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years to the mounting $20 trillion U.S. national debt. “There are so many rip-offs in this bill that people are going to say this is some kind of new Gilded Age,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, top Democrat on the Senate tax committee. Some 52 per cent of adults oppose the tax plan, while 27 per cent support it, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling. Source: CBC News
China and Russia slam new US national security strategy
China and Russia have criticised the United States for its new national security strategy that labels both countries as “competitors” challenging American interests. China said on Tuesday the new strategy outlined by US President Donald Trump demonstrated a “Cold War mentality”. “We urge the US side to stop deliberately distorting China’s strategic intentions and abandon such outdated concepts as the Cold War mentality and the zero-sum game - otherwise it will only end up harming itself as well as others,” said Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry. “We hope that the United States can correspond with the trend of the times and the will of the people, put the world and China-US relations in perspective, honour the relevant commitments, and join hands with China to uphold the sound and steady growth of China-US relations,” she added. “This is the right choice that serves the interests of the two peoples - and people around the world.” Russia also was critical of Trump’s new strategy. “A quick read of the parts of the strategy that mention our country ... [shows] an imperialist character,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. On Monday, Trump unveiled
his new national security plan that promised to prioritise US economic interests and “pursue peace through strength”. The president’s strategy explicitly named China and Russia as “rivals” that seek to “challenge American power, influence, and interests” and attempt “to erode American security and prosperity”. In response, China disagreed with the notion it is a competitor of the US. “We always believe that as the largest developing country and developed country and the top two largest economies in the world, China and the United States shoulder important responsibilities and have extensive common interests in upholding world peace and stability and promoting global development and prosperity,” Hua said. “Cooperation is the only right choice for China and the United States, and win-win cooperation can lead to a better future.” Peskov said Russia also does not see itself as a threat to US interests. The new US security strategy shows “an unwillingness to give up the idea of a unipolar world - moreover, an insistent unwillingness, disregard for a multipolar world,” he said. “We cannot agree with an attitude that sees our country as a threat to the United States,” said Peskov. The central bank of Qatar has launched an investigation into what it says are attempts to harm the Qatari economy through the manipulation of its currency, securities and derivatives markets. Sheikh Abdulla bin Saud Al Thani, the governor of Qatar’s central bank, blamed the effort on a Saudi-led group of countries that imposed an economic boycott on Qatar in June. “We know blockading countries and their agents are attempting to manipulate and undermine our currency, securities and derivatives, as part of a coordinated strategy to damage Qatar’s economy,” Sheikh Abdulla said in a statement on Tuesday. The central bank has hired New York-based law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP to lead the investigation, he said, adding: “We will not stand by while our country is attacked in this manner.” Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt severed ties with Qatar and cut trade links with it after accusing their fellow Arab country of supporting “terrorism”. Qatar vigorously rejected all the accusation. The blockade disrupted business and financial activities in Qatar and the Gulf and caused the withdrawal of billions of dollars in deposits from Qatari banks. However, Qatar’s exports of liquefied natural gas - the key to its financial health - were not hurt, and the country was able to weather the crisis by deploying its vast financial reserves. Rating agency Moody’s estimated that while $30bn was taken out from Qatar’s banking system between June and July, Qatar used $38.5bn of its reserve to support the economy and the financial sector. Khalid Alkhater, a Doha-based financial analyst, says part of the strategy to undermine Qatar’s economy involved trading the Qatari riyal at “artificial prices” lower than its official peg of 3.64 to the US dollar. This was “intended to trigger panic among investors and the public, and cause them to dump the Qatari riyal”, he told Al Jazeera on
Tuesday. If that happens, a capital outflow would ensue and in turn put pressure on the value of the currency, making it difficult for Qatar to borrow from international markets, he said. “The aim is to drain the Qatari sovereign fund in order to harm the economy and the financial sector ... and weaken the economy to show that Qatar cannot provide the infrastructure for the World Cup.” In November, US-based investigative news website, the Intercept, revealed an alleged plot by the UAE to weaken Qatar’s currency and strip the country of its role as host of the World Football Cup in 2022. Citing documents found in an email account belonging to UAE’s ambassador to the US, Yousef al-Otaiba, the Intercept said a Luxembourg-based private bank drew up a scheme to “drive down the value of Qatar’s bonds and increase the cost of insuring them, with the ultimate goal of creating a currency crisis that would drain the country’s cash reserves”. There was no conclusive evidence that the plan was executed, the Intercept reported. The International Monetary Fund has warned that longer-term economic growth could weaken in the Arab Gulf region if the diplomatic crisis remains unresolved. Source: Al-Jazeera
At least 136 civilians have been killed in Yemen over 11 days this month as a result of intensified air raids by the Saudi-led military coalition, the United Nations says. Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, expresseddeep concern on Tuesday at a “surge in civilian casualties” in an air campaign launched by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition in response to the December 4 killing of Yemen’s former president, Ali Abdulla Saleh. Saleh was killed in a grenade and gun attack by Houthi rebels days after he broke off their fragile alliance and expressed an openness to talks with the Saudi Arabia-led coalition, which intervened in Yemen in March 2015 to restore the government of President AbdRabbu Mansour Hadi. The war in the Arab world’s poorest country has now lasted 1,000 days. More than 10,000 civilians have been killed in the conflict and the UN has warned about 8.4 million people are a “step away from famine”. The war-torn country is also battling the world’s worst cholera epidemic, which has killed thousands and infected about one million people. Speaking to reporters in Geneva on Tuesday, Colville said the UN human rights office has “verified that 136 civilians and non-combatants were killed and some 87 injured” in the strikes on the capital, Sanaa, and three other northern provinces. The attacks took place between December 6-16, and hit a Houthi-run TV channel, a hospital, a prison, a wedding party and a farm-
house. Victims included more than a dozen children. At least 45 people were killed in the prison bombing on December 13. All victims were detainees loyal to Hadi, Colville said. Seven civilians were killed in the hospital bombing on December 10, while one woman and nine children who were returning home from a wedding party were killed when their vehicles were struck in the Harib al-Qaramish district of the Marib governorate on Saturday. The farmhouse bombing on Friday killed 20 people, including 14 children, Colville said. He urged all parties to the conflict to “take all feasible precautions to avoid, and in any event to minimise, the impact of violence on civilians”. Meanwhile, more than 355 high-profile figures have urged the leaders of the US, UK and France to stop “stoking the flames of a war that is strangling an entire population”, and instead take on the role of “brokers of peace”. The signatories to Tuesday’s appeal included eight Nobel peace laureates, religious leaders, celebrities, and heads of aid agencies. The US, UK and France - as permanent members of the UN Security Council and major weapons suppliers to Saudi Arabia and the UAE - bear “a special responsibility to use the full extent of their leverage to press their partners in the region to end the crisis”, the statement said. “If you don’t want the burden of the lives of thousands more Yemeni children on your hands, then the time to act is now. Yemen can’t wait any longer,” it added. Source: Al-Jazeera

B.C. Assessment Authority warns homeowners of outsized assessment increases
B.C. Assessment has sent warning letters to 67,000 British Columbia homeowners letting them know to expect outsized increases in their 2018 property assessments ahead of issuing the documents starting Jan. 1. The number represents a decrease from 82,000 advance-notification letters, as the agency calls them, sent out in 2016 but is the third year in a row that it has sent out tens-ofthousands more than in years past as property markets have waxed and waned. ” (Assessment-values) reflect market conditions,” said assessor Tina Ireland, “and the markets are not as strong this year as they were last year, which would result in a few less letters than last year.” However, those numbers compare with 37,000 letters in 2015 and 24,000 in 2014. One difference this year is that condo owners, in a segment of the market where first-time buyers are scrambling to get in, can expect to see assessments soar 10 to 30 per cent compared with single-family homeowners. “The majority of letters are going to strata (property) owners because that’s were the market (was) the most robust as of July 1,” Ireland said. Relatively speaking, values were “more stable” for houses in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby and the North Shore. In other regions, however, such as the Fraser Valley, Okanagan and Vancouver Island, more detached homeowners will see increases of 10 to 20 per cent. Higher-than-average assessment increases have consequences in potentially higher property bills because municipalities and other taxing authorities such as TransLink, use average increases to set property-tax rates. Using the average to adjust property-tax rates winds up shifting more of the overall tax burden to homeowners who see dramatically bigger increases in their properties’ assessment. Those escalating assessments, particularly for owners in the condominium market, are a concern to municipal governments, said Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie. “It runs counter to our efforts to create affordable housing by increasing more supply,” Louie said. Vancouver allows property owners to average dramatic
increases in their tax bills over a couple of years to smooth out the impact of tax spikes, Louie said. Louie argued that the city is also trying to accommodate people who want to live in the city through its empty-homes tax and stricter regulations on short-term rental services such as Airbnb. So it is concerning when rising assessments help to crimp affordability. Louie said the province could help Metro Vancouver municipalities by adjusting the way that it uses property taxes to fund school operations. He argued that under the current method, Vancouver homeowners wind up paying more into the provincial school budget than the Vancouver school board winds up getting back in operating funding, for example. “I think there needs to be the recognition that Metro Vancouver, as a hot market, is different from the rest of the province,” Louie said. Lower Mainland homeowners did receive the bulk of advancenotification letters, Ireland said. The Vancouver assessment office, which includes the North Shore and municipalities on the north side of the Fraser River, sent out 24,564 of the letters or 36 per cent. Surrey’s assessment office, which includes Richmond Delta, sent out 17,825 of the letters. The Abbotsford office sent out the third biggest grouping at 8,511. All together, the three regions account for 76 per cent of the warnings. Ireland said homeowners will start receiving their official assessment notices in the first week of January. Those who have registered to receive the document electronically will get it by email just after midnight Dec. 31, but the cutoff to register was Dec. 1. Otherwise, all new assessment data will go live on B.C. Assessment’s website starting Jan. 2 with hard-copy notices going into the mail the same week. Ireland encouraged anyone who has received one of the warning letters who has questions about their increase to contact B.C. Assessment for a more detailed explanation. Once they have official notices in January homeowners will have the option to appeal. Source: The Province
U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley urged the Security Council on Tuesday to punish Iran for what the Trump administration calls its “dangerous violations” of U.N. resolutions and “destabilizing behaviour,” while Russia said dialogue is needed rather than threats or sanctions. Haley told a council meeting on implementation of the resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran that in the coming days the U.S. will explore a number of options with council members to pressure the Iranians “to adjust their behaviour.” Haley said the council could strengthen the resolution, adopt a new one to prohibit all Iranian ballistic missile activity, explore sanctions “in response to its clear violation of the Yemen arms embargo,” and hold the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps accountable for violating numerous council resolutions. While the United States “continues to uphold its commitments” under the nuclear agreement, she said the international community must take action to address Iranian actions such as its arms sales, ballistic missile launches and support for terrorism. But Russia’s deputy U.N. ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, said that what is needed to implement the resolution on the nuclear deal is “to abandon the language of threats and sanctions, and to start using the instruments of dialogue -- and concentrate on broadening co-operation and mutual trust.” The Security Council was discussing Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report on implementation of the 2015 resolution. The U.N. chief said Iran was complying with the nuclear deal with the U.S. and five other world powers, but he warned that Tehran may be defying a U.N. call to halt ballistic missile development. Guterres said the United Nations is investigating Iran’s possible transfer of ballistic missiles to Houthi Shiite rebels in Yemen that may have been used in launches aimed at Saudi Arabia on July 22 and Nov. 4. Safronkov stressed that the resolution makes no demand -- it calls on Iran not to carry out ballistic missile activity that could be capable of delivering nuclear weapons. He accused the U.N. Secretariat
of carrying out investigations without prior Security Council approval, saying it “has neither the authority nor the expertise” and the information obtained “cannot be considered accurate.” Safronkov said a Russian initiative for “a system of collective security” and confidence building measures in the Middle East is relevant today. He also said Guterres should implement a resolution adopted at the end of the Iran-Iraq war in 1987 calling on the secretary-general to recommend ways to increase security and stability in the region. Last week, Haley displayed what she said was “undeniable” evidence that Iran was supplying Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen with missiles used in the Saudi attacks. On Tuesday, she called the Houthis’ firing of a ballistic missile earlier in the day aimed at Saudi Arabia’s leaders meeting in the capital of Riyadh “a flashing red siren” for the Security Council. While not all the evidence is in, “it bears all the hallmarks of previous attacks using Iranianprovided weapons,” Haley said. The U.S.backed Saudi-led coalition that is fighting the Houthis said it intercepted the missile. But Haley warned that “it is only a matter of time before one of these missiles hits the target. If we don’t do something, we will miss the opportunity to prevent further violence from Iran,” she said. “The international community must demonstrate that we are committed to ensuring accountability for the full spectrum of Iran’s malign behaviour.” Source: CTV News
Contract Awarded for Bear Creek Bridge replacement project Contract Awarded for Bear Creek Bridge replacement project
Surrey – The contract to replace the existing Bear Creek Bridge awarded by Surrey City Council is a significant step forward in the Surrey LRT Project. WestPro was awarded the $5 Million contract at last night’s Regular Council meeting to construct the Bear Creek Bridge replacement, one of the Early Works projects identified to set the stage for light rail transit south of the Fraser River. “Getting started on this enhancement project is an important milestone to showcase that our preparatory work is well underway and that we are shovel ready for LRT construction in Surrey,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “In a show of support for LRT, the Federal Government committed to the funding for this project over a year ago, and we are thrilled to see it move forward.” “This is an important next step in preparing roads and infrastructure for the Surrey-NewtonGuildford Line,” says Kevin Desmond, CEO, TransLink. “We are pleased to see that the City is moving forward to get ready for the anticipated LRT once funding is secured for the project.” Surrey’s existing Bear Creek Bridge is situated south of 88th Avenue on should be cancelled. Trump threatens US aid recipients a head of UN vote on Jerusalem WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut off financial aid to the countries that back a United Nations resolution opposing the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Earlier this month, US president Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, announcing to shift US embassy to that disputed territory amid huge criticism. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said; “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us,” he told reporters at the White House. “Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” He added. Trump’s that comments come ahead of a UN General Assembly vote on a resolution opposing recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. ture, which many people may not even know exists, will reap benefits to the LRT project and beyond,” said Councillor Tom Gill, Chair of the Transportation Infrastructure Committee. “The new free standing bridge has been designed to current seismic specifications and will also enhance the existing creek environment.” Replacement of the existing bridge will include rehabilitating the creek channel by improving the stream substrate and incorporating in-stream aquatic habitat features. The design will also better accommodate wildlife movement by offering a wider, unobstructed passage underneath King George Boulevard which further supports the City’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Green Infrastructure Network. Construction is expected to begin in midJanuary and last approximately 10 months. The City of Surrey will keep traffic lanes open in either direction throughout that time, maintaining access to businesses and residences along the route.Source: City of Surrey

Sincere Good Will: Tameem Ad-Dari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Verily, the religion is sincerity. Muslims love Jesus, too: 6 things you didn’t know about Jesus in Islam By Jennifer Williams Christmas, as everyone knows, commemorates the birth of Jesus and is a major religious celebration for Christians around the world. But what many people don’t know is that Jesus is an important figure in Islam, too, even though most Muslims don’t celebrate Christmas (though some of us, especially American Muslims, do). In honor of the holiday, here are six things you may not know about the role of Jesus — and his mother, Mary — in Islam: 1:Jesus, Mary, and the angel Gabriel are all in the Quran (as are Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and a bunch of other Bible characters). 2:Muslims believe that Jesus (called “Isa” in Arabic) was a prophet of God, was born to a virgin (Mary), and will return to Earth before the Day of Judgment to restore justice and to defeat al-Masih ad-Dajjal (“the false messiah”), also known as the Antichrist. All of which may sound pretty familiar to many Christians. 3:Mary (called “Maryam” in Arabic) has an entire chapter in the Quran named for her — the only chapter in the Quran named for a female figure. In fact, Mary is the only woman to be mentioned by name in the entire Quran: As noted in the new
Study Quran, “other female figures are identified only by their relation to others, such as the wife of Adam and the mother of Moses, or by their title, such as the Queen of Sheba.” Mary is mentioned more times in the Quran than in the entire New Testament. 4: Just as with all the other prophets, including Mohammed, Muslims recite, “Peace be upon him” every time we refer to Jesus. 5:Muslims believe that Jesus performed miracles: The Quran discusses several of Jesus’s miracles, including giving sight to the blind, healing lepers, raising the dead, and breathing life into clay birds. 6:The story of Jesus’s birth as told in the Quran is also the story of his first miracle, when he spoke as an infant in the cradle and declared himself to be a prophet of God. Here’s the story: And remember Mary in the Book, when she withdrew from her family to an eastern place. And she veiled herself from them. Then We [God] sent unto her Our
BY: SYED ABUL ALA MAUDUDI Jesus or Isa in Arabic (peace be upon him) is of great significance in both Islam and Christianity. However, there are differences in terms of beliefs about the nature and life occurrences of Jesus . There are about 71 verses in the Quran that refer to Prophet Jesus. Following is a translation and explanation of Chapter 3 verses 44 thru 48 by Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi,. English rendering by Muhammad Akbar. O Muhammad, these are the “unseen” things, We are revealing to you: you were not present there when the priests of the Temple were casting lots by throwing their quills to decide which of them should be the guardian of Mary: 43 nor were you with them when they were arguing about it. Quran 3:44 Note 43: As Mary was a girl who had been dedicated by her mother to the Temple in the way of God, the question of her guardianship had become a problem for the keepers because of her sex. They were therefore casting lots to decide the delicate problem. And remember when the angels said, “O Mary, God sends you the good news of a Command of His: his name shall be Messi-
ah, Jesus son of Mary. He will be highly honored in this world and in the Next World and he will be among those favored by God. He will speak to the people alike when in the cradle and when grown up, and he will be among the righteous.” Hearing this, Mary said, “How, O Lord, shall I have a son, when no man has ever touched me?” “Thus shall it be,”44 was the answer. God creates whatever He wills. When He decrees a thing, He only says, “Be” and it is. (Continuing their message, the angels added,) “And God will teach him the Book and wisdom, and give him the knowledge of the Torah and the Gospel, and appoint him as His Messenger to the children of Israel.” Quran 3:45-49 Note 45 That is, “These Signs are clear enough to convince you that I have been sent by that God Who is the Creator and Absolute Ruler of this universe, provided that you are not obdurate but are willing to accept the Truth.” Note 46 That is, “This is yet another proof of the fact that I have been sent by God. If I had been a false prophet I would have invented my own religion and by virtue of these miracles striven to divert you from your previous Faith to the New creed. But I profess the same original religion to be
Spirit [the angel Gabriel], and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man. She said, “I seek refuge from thee in the Compassionate [i.e., God], if you are reverent!” He said, “I am but a messenger of thy Lord, to bestow upon thee a pure boy.” She said, “How shall I have a boy when no man has touched me, nor have I been unchaste?” He said, “Thus shall it be. Thy Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me.’” And [it is thus] that We might make him a sign unto mankind, and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter decreed. So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a place far off. And the pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date palm. She said, “Would that I had died before this and was a thing forgotten, utterly
forgotten!” So he called out to her from below her, “Grieve not! Thy Lord has placed a rivulet beneath thee. And shake toward thyself the trunk of the date palm; fresh, ripe dates shall fall upon thee. So eat and drink and cool thine eye. And if thou seest any human being, say, ‘Verily I have vowed a fast unto the Compassionate, so I shall not speak this day to any man.’” Then she came with him [the infant Jesus] unto her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary! Thou hast brought an amazing thing! O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not an evil man, nor was thy mother unchaste.” Then she pointed to him [Jesus]. They said, “How shall we speak to one who is yet a child in the cradle?” He [Jesus] said, “Truly I am a servant of God. He has given me the Book and made me a prophet. He has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I live, and [has made me] dutiful toward my mother. And He has not made me domineering, wretched. Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive!” That is Jesus son of Mary— a statement of the truth, which they doubt. https://www.vox.com/

true and confirm the same teachings which were brought by the Prophets before me.” The fact that Jesus taught the same religion that had been presented by Moses and the other Prophets is supported even by the existing Gospels. For example, according to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus declared in the Sermon on the Mount: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” (5: 17). One of the Pharisees, who was a lawyer, asked Jesus, “Which is the great commandment in the law?” He replied: Note 48 This shows that like all other Prophets, Jesus also based his teachings on the following three fundamentals: The Supreme Authority to which mankind should submit and surrender exclusively belongs to God and all the social and moral systems should be built entirely on it. Being a representative of the same Paramount Power, a prophet must be obeyed

unconditionally. God alone is entitled to prescribe laws and regulations for making things lawful or unlawful, pure and impure; consequently all laws imposed by others must be abolished. Thus it is clear that Jesus, Moses, Muhammad and all other Prophets (God’s peace be upon them all) had one and the same mission. Those people who say that different Prophets were sent with different missions and to fulfill different aims, are gravely mistaken. Anyone, who is delegated by the Absolute Master of the Universe to His subjects, cannot have any other mission than to prevent the people, from becoming disobedient to and independent of Him, and to forbid them to set others to rank with God as partners in His Authority in any way. For, they are sent to invite the people to surrender and submit and be loyal to the Almighty God and worship Him alone.........See more details at www.islamicity.org/6405/jesus-in-the-quran/

13th Annual Eid-E-Milad-Un-Nabi By
On Dec 09, Islamic Association of Western Canada in association with Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah held their 13th Annual Eid-E-Milad-Un-Nabi Conference at Taj Park Convention Centre, Surrey, BC. The program was well attended by the Muslim Community and famous political and social personalities from all over the Greater Vancouver. More than 500 people attended this year’s program, which was filled quickly to its capacity. Program started with children presentations of beautiful Tilawat-e-Quran and also eautiful Naats. After Isha break, formal program started with Tilawate-Quran-Pak by Allama Aiyub Ashrafi. After that, famous local Naat Khawans including Br. Muzamil, Br. Shahid and Br. Abdul Rasool Salis recited beautiful Naats. Br. Haider Ali Khan (MC) welcomed the Muslim community and political personalities to the program. Br. Khan spoke about the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and stressed the importance of following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in our daily lives. Resident Imam of Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah, Allama Mohmed Aiyub Ashrafi started his speech with the recitation of Ayats from the Quran describing the Sunnah and Ikhlaq of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh). Thousands in Washington protest US Jerusalem decision
Demonstrators hailed Turkish President’s robust stance against the U.S. move. By Safvan Allahverdi Thousands gathered near by the White House on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organizations, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Muslim Amarican Society (MAS), the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations,Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC) and Jews United Against Zionism took their grievances to the U.S. Capitol.
“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine whether Trump or his buddy, the war criminal, Benjamin Netanyahu like it or not,” AMP Director Osama Abu Irshaid said during his speech to protestors. “If Mr. President wants to give property to the state of Israel, he should give one of his properties if he really owns them,” Abu Irshaid continued. “But we don’t really know how much he owns because he never declared his taxes.”He said that Jerusalem does not belong to Trump or Israel and Trump has no right to give away Palestinian’s land. Last Wednesday, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. At a Tuesday summit in Istanbul, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation responded to the controversial U.S. move by formally recognizing East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. “Why do not you give your Trump Hotel, which is a few blocks away from where we are right now. Abu Irshaid also slammed Trump’s son in law, Jared Kushner, saying that if Kushner wants to give something to Israel, he should give away his investments in Manhattan, New York. Describing the Jerusalem as the unalterable part of Palestine, he added that “empty promise” of the U.S. president will
going down as a failure. “Mr. President take your empty promise and trow it to the trash. Because that were it belongs,” Abu Irshaid shouted at the end of his speech. TASC Director Halil Mutlu also spoke at the protest and emphasized the importance of the city of Jerusalem for three major religions such as Islam, Christianism and Judaism. “As we said before Al-Quds [Jerusalem] is our redline. 80 million Turks and millions of Christians, Jews and Muslims around the world are against Trump’s decision,” Mutlu said. Denouncing the recent U.S. decision on Jerusalem, he urged American President to undo his decision. During Mutlu’s speech, demonstrators hailed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s robust stance against the U.S. move, shouting, “Recep Tayyip Erdogan, true leader of Ummah [Muslim believers]”. A protestor, Abdollah Haniyyah said that he and his family came from Chicago to stand against Trump’s decision and show their solidarity. “We love Turkish people and President Erdogan,” Haniyyah told Anadolu Agency. “He is the true leader of Muslims and we want all Muslim leaders to show solidarity for Palestine and Jerusalem as he does.” While Muslims performed the daily prayer in the area, Rabbi Weiss and his companions
held banners that read: “Torah true Jews in Jerusalem and Worldwide condemn the aggression in Al-Aqsa and the occupation of Palestine” and “Judaism rejects Zionism and the state of Israel”. Protestors chanted against Israel and Trump’s decision on Jerusalem, carried banners reading “Stop the occupation in Palestine now”, “Jerusalem belongs to Palestinians” and “We reject Trump’s decision”. The event ended in front of U.S. Congress without conflict. Jerusalem remains at the heart of the IsraelPalestine conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem -- now occupied by Israel -- might eventually serve as the capital of a Palestinian state.
JI to take out ‘million march’ against US Jerusalem move in Karachi KARACHI: To express solidarity with people of Palestine, Jamaat-eIslami (JI) has organised a rally in the city today (Sunday) to protest against United States’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The rally has been named as ‘Al-Quds’, which will be taken out on University Road. JI Amir Sirajul Haq had earlier said that his party would make all-out efforts to bring the masses on roads in solidarity with oppressed Muslims of Palestine while anticipating
a ‘large’ gathering. He then said that the Trump had put the global peace in danger after Jerusalem move. “Trump’s decision will add fuel to the fire,” he asserted while announcing countrywide protests. Earlier this month, Trump abruptly reversed decades of U.S. policy this month when he recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, generating outrage from Palestinians. Trump also plans to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

South Asians hold rally for 25 years of the demolition of Babri Mosque By: Gurpreet Singh On May 9, Braving cold weather, dedicated South Asian activists gathered at the Holland Park in Surrey on Saturday to hold rally in commemoration of the 25 years of the demolition of Babri Mosque. Organized by the Indians Abroad for Pluralist India and Radical Desi, the rally was started by a moment of silence in memory of a Muslim labourer brutally murdered by a Hindu fanatic in Rajasthan, India this past week. Shambhu Lal, the main suspect not only hacked the Muslim man to death but set him alight. The video of his violent action went viral on social media. Lal justified the murder accusing Muslims of Jihad in India. Such incidents have grown ever since BJP came to power with
brute majority in 2014. The speakers felt that on the 25th anniversary of the Babri episode not just the Muslims but all minorities feel insecure under a BJP government. They unanimously denounced attempts to turn India into a Hindu state and demanded that the Babri Mosque be rebuilt and handed over to the Muslim community. Among those who addressed the gathering were Amrit Diwana, Alameen Post publisher Jaffer Bhamji, Imtiaz Popat, Gian Singh Gill, Hardev Singh, Keshu Rakesh , Mohammad Naseer Pirzada and myself. Notably, no Indo Canadian politician turned up for the rally despite being invited by the organizers.

Palestinian minister slams US ‘threats’ ahead of UN vote over Jerusalem ISTANBUL: Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki on Wednesday accused Washington of “threatening” member countries of the UN General Assembly ahead of a vote on rejecting the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Malki said American officials were “committing another mistake when they have distributed this famous letter trying to threaten countries, (and) threaten their sovereign decision to choose how to vote.” He spoke at a press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Istanbul, shortly before both men left for New York. On Tuesday, Nikki Haley, Washington’s UN envoy, warned countries that she would report back to President Donald Trump with the names of those who supported a draft resolution rejecting the US recognition.
The UN General Assembly will hold an emergency session on Thursday to vote on the proposed measure, after the US vetoed a similar resolution for the Security Council. “This is really a new definition of world order in politics and it seems that the American administration... are putting their stamp on a new political reality that many countries will reject,” Malki said. Turkey and Yemen requested the urgent meeting on behalf of the Arab group of countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The two countries circulated a draft resolution on Tuesday that mirrors the vetoed measure, reaffirming that any decision on the status of Jerusalem has no legal effect and must be rescinded. Malki said the UN session would show “how many countries will opt to vote with
their conscience.” “They will vote for justice and they will vote in favor of that resolution that was presented by both Yemen and Turkey on behalf of the Arab group and OIC,” he said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sought to lead Islamic condemnation of Trump’s Jerusalem plan, calling a summit of the leaders of Muslim nations last week in Istanbul, who urged the world to recognize East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. East Jerusalem was annexed by Israel after it seized control of the area in the 1967 war, in a move never recognized by the international community. Cavusoglu said his country expected “strong support” for the Palestinian Authority in the UN General Assembly. “Everyone with a conscience ... is against this decision that usurped Palestine’s
rights,” he said. The foreign minister said any honorable country would not bow to US pressure, urging Washington to reverse its mistake. “God willing, I believe we will obtain a good result tomorrow (Thursday),” he added.
Houthi missile attack on Riyadh sparks global outrage
DUBAI: A number of countries and organizations have condemned the launch of a ballistic missile by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in Yemen aimed at Riyadh. Houthi forces fired a ballistic missile toward Riyadh on Tuesday, targeting the Al-Yamamah Royal Palace in the Saudi capital. Royal Saudi Air Defense forces intercepted the missile and shot it down and
prevented damage. The attempted attack comes just weeks after the group in Yemen launched a missile at Riyadh on Nov. 4, targeting King Khalid International Airport. A UN Security Council-appointed panel confirmed the missile was manufactured in Iran, along with three other missiles fired from Yemen toward the Kingdom this year. Source: ARAB NEWS
Coast guard rescues over 250 migrants off Libyan coast
TRIPOLI: Libya’s coastal guard has rescued more than 250 illegal migrants trying to leave the North African country in small boats bound for Italy, officials said on Saturday. Libya’s western shores are the main departure point for migrants mainly from sub-Saharan countries fleeing poverty and conflict trying to reach Europe. Arrivals to Italy have fallen by two-thirds since July from the same period last year after officials working for the UN-backed gov-
ernment in Tripoli, Italy’s partner, managed to cut back human smuggling in the city of Sabratha west of the capital. That has pushed the trade further east, with the coast guard intercepting several boats off the coast near Qaraboulli and Zliten, two towns located east of Tripoli. “The naval forces’ Ibn Ouf vessel rescued (on Friday) illegal migrants including women, children and men ... they are from different sub-Saharan and Arab countries,” Coast Guard
Captain Abdulhadi Fakhal told Reuters. “They were rescued off Qaraboulli and Zliten towns ... and they are about 250 to 270 persons,” Fakhal said. Libya has plunged into chaos since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising. A UN-backed Government of National Accord in Tripoli has been trying to gain control of territory. Saudi Arabia offers Scholarships for Pakistani Students
By: MOHAMMED RASOOLDEEN RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has reserved a quota for scholarships for Pakistanis in undergraduate programs in various universities, Education Minister Ahmed Al-Eissa told Pakistani Ambassador Khan Hasham bin Saddique during a meeting in Riyadh on Thursday. The minister told the ambassador that the scholarships are given to students based in Pa-
kistan under an educational and cultural program between the two countries. This will help students from both countries benefit from respective educational opportunities, Al-Eissa said. Sardar Mohammed Kattak, first secretary of political and media affairs at the Pakistani Embassy, lauded the scholarships and the Saudi government’s generosity. He said the ambassador asked the minister to facilitate the operation of two purpose-built school buildings in Riyadh and Dammam. Their construction will start soon. Bin Saddique said there are 10 Pakistani community school buildings in the Kingdom and they are rented. “We’re building these two complexes in Dammam and Riyadh to call them our own, and they’ll be built according to government specifications,” he said.

Trudeau wants to spread G7 benefits across Canada through minister meetings OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will host ministerial level meetings with its G7 counterparts across the country before leaders convene in Charlevoix, Que., next June.Trudeau tells a Facebook Live event that he wants to spread the economic benefits across Canada as
it hosts the G7 leaders’ summit. The prime minister says he can’t yet say where those meetings will take place, but officials say they will likely be in, or close, to major cities. They will involve gatherings of foreign, finance and environment ministers, among others.Improving gender equality will
be a major priority at all those ministerial meetings, he says. The Canadian-led agenda will be rounded out by discussions of investing in economic growth, preparing for jobs of the future, climate change, clean energy and protecting oceans, as well as peace and security issues.
Top trending Canadian political figure in 2017? Andrew Scheer
OTTAWA -- “Hi, I’m Andrew,” the leader of the Conservative Party’s most recent campaign ad begins. It’s an introduction of Andrew Scheer to the Canadian public after taking the helm of the Official Opposition in May.Scheer has been viewed as a relatively unknown political figure, despite having been the Speaker of the House of Commons during the last government, and a federal MP for 13 years. It was this year that Canadians wanted to get to know him, or started to wonder who he was, according to Google’s Year in Search results for 2017.
The results were informed by Google Trends and analysis of Canadian online searches through 2017. Andrew Scheer was the top trending political figure in Canada. The top trending category looks at the searches that had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2017 as compared to the year before. The results of searches up to Dec. 4 show that in both political categories, Canadians showed curiosity about new faces on the political scene, and had questions about what was happening with our American neighbours. The top 5 trending Canadian political figures: 1. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer: Scheer and the election of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh were both “seismic moments in federal politics,” said Google Canada’s Year in Search spokesperson Alexandra Hunnings Klein. Since becoming the Official Opposition leader, Scheer has faced off against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the House of Commons on a number of issues, and personally called for Finance Minister Bill Morneau to resign. Among the Scheer searches? Questions about how many kids he has.
2. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh: Singh came on to the federal scene after winning the NDP leadership race in October. He was the second top trending political figure searched in Canada in 2017. Prior to his win, he was an Ontario MPP. Singh started 2017 with a feature in QP magazine that called him “the Incredibly well-dressed rising star in Canadian politics,” and he ended the year on a cross-Canada tour hoping to build NDP support in his new role. 3. Governor General Julie Payette: Payette started trending in Canada after Trudeau announced he was appointing the former astronaut to the role in July. Google saw a 100-per-cent spike in searches for Julie Payette, spiking between July 9 and July 15. As well, she had smaller spikes between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7 when she was sworn-in. 4. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante: Plante was elected mayor of Montreal in a huge upset, ousting Denis Coderre. Her November victory was historic, making her the first woman to hold the job. By the morning after her stunning win, Canadians across the country were talking about her ascension.
5. Former B.C. Premier Christy Clark: On the opposite side of the electoral spectrum, Clark was the fifth top trending political figure in Canada in 2017. She resigned as leader of the British Columbia Liberals a month after her government lost a confidence vote after a disappointing showing in the provincial election and an attempt to hold on to power. Missing from the list for the first time since coming to power? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He made the list in both 2015 and 2016. “We’re now seeing the new flock,” Hunnings Klein said.
The top 10 trending political figures in Canada 1. Donald Trump 2. Andrew Scheer 3. Jagmeet Singh 4. Roy Moore 5. Emmanuel Macron 6. John McCain 7. Julie Payette 8. Betsy DeVos 9. Valérie Plante 10. Christy Clark

angladesh), officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Burma (Myanmar) to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south. Together with the Indian state of West Bengal, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The name Bangladesh means "Country of Bengal" in the official Bengali language. The borders of present-day Bangladesh were established with the partition of Bengal and India in 1947, when the region became the eastern wing of the newly formed Pakistan. However, it was separated from the western wing by 1,600 km (994 mi) across India. After independence the new state endured famines, natural disasters and widespread poverty, as well as political turmoil and military coups. The restoration of democracy in 1991 has been followed by relative calm and economic progress. Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country and is among the most densely populated countries in the world with a high poverty rate. However, per-capita (inflation-adjusted) The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies. Dhaka, the capital, and other urban centers have been the driving force behind this growth. Geographically, the country straddles the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and is subject to annual
monsoon floods and cyclones. The government is a parliamentary democracy. Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the OIC, SAARC, BIMSTEC, and the D-8. As the World Bank notes in its July 2005 Country Brief, the country has made significant progress in human development in the areas of literacy, gender parity in schooling and reduction of population growth. However, Bangladesh continues to face a number of major challenges, including widespread political and bureaucratic corruption, economic competition relative to the world and an increasing danger of hydrologic shocks brought on by ecological vulnerability to climate change. Exports of textiles, As the demand for readymade garments increases rapidly across the global market, Bangladesh’s position as the world’s second largest readymade garment exporter continues to hold strong. The Bangladesh government just set a $37 billion export target for the 2016-17 fiscal year, of which over $30 billion will be contributed by the ready-made garment sector – the country’s largest source for export earnings. However, Bangladesh’s overall export earnings stood at $34.83 billion in FY’17, which is 1.68% higher than the $34.25 billion a year ago. It is also the lowest in the last 15 years.
“ BLACK DAY “ December 16, 1971 Fall of Dhaka
I
By Nafisa Siddiqui n the year of 1947, Pakistan came into existence; it became unique in the Muslim world because it remains the only country to have been created in the name of Islam. The Muslim Pakistan was divided into two parts East Pakistan and West Pakistan . Twenty-four years ago, on the 16th of December 1971, Pakistan lost East Pakistan when after the election of 7th December 1970 leaders of East Pakistan Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto from West Pakistan were unable to settle their disputes, East Pakistan locked itself away completely to become a new country: Bangladesh. I still remember the grief and sadness when the whole nation glued to televisions and radios ─ received the news that the Pakistani Army had surrendered to our enemy: India. Ninety thousand of our soldiers, including high ranks, had laid their arms. This was a
shock for the nation that no words could describe. Pakistan, the biggest Muslim country with a strong army, had faced the humiliation of surrender. Within 24 years of the creation of Pakistan we lost Eastern half of our beloved country it’s a huge loss . In the history of nations, 24 years does not hold a significant importance, but the division of a country in this span of time raises questions. Why did the Bengalis who struggled for the creation of Pakistan in 1947 suddenly decide to split from Pakistan? Also question arise that “How did the Pakistan government forget that it is not just about the people of the land called themselves as Bengalis, they had the big responsibility on their shoulder to protect those who settled in west Pakistan there after independence ,those Muslim settlers are the liability of Pakistan government?” The most tragic part is that the ruling class of West Pakistan had forgotten the separation of East Pakistan in such a way as if it was not the division of a state, but some unimportant event. Despite the passage of 70 years, none of the people responsible for “Dhaka Fall” have been tried or punished. East Pakistan detaching itself from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was a big blow to both the people and the government. Sadly, another horrifying massacre happened
on the exact same day and month, but in 2014. This time, it was the innocent school children and staff members of Army Public School Peshawar. The killers were from our own land, calling themselves Muslims. The whole nation mourned the loss of innocent school children and noble, dedicated, teachers. It was a Tuesday morning 16th December 2014 when the school bell rang, the corridors of the school filling with giggles of students;children were busy in their class rooms when all of a sudden halls echoed with gunshots, and the people of Pakistan witnessed the bloodiest and the most savage terrorist attack. Six gun men began ruthlessly killing innocent children, going as far as burning the principal alive in front of the children as they slaughtered teachers and faculty members. This brutal massacre continued for almost eight hours, killing at least 141 people including 132 children and nine staff members, leaving 121 people wounded. A rescue operation was launched by Pakistan Army, who killed all six terrorists. Later other perpetrators and terrorists were also captured and killed. The tragic murders of those innocent souls shocked the nation. Those who viewed Taliban as freedom fighters and noble warriors saw their true faces. From 2006 to 2013, the Taliban went on brutal killing sprees. Our
good Taliban and bad Taliban illusion was shattered and the nation saw only one face: The face of terrorism. This day will always bring back the memory of the tragedies of December 16th, in both 1971 and 2014. This day provides us with a great opportunity to rethink our mistakes made in the past. It’s important that those in “corridors of power” accept their mistakes. Only then, they will not make these mistakes again. If internal problems are tackled more wisely and every citizen in Pakistan is considered as an equal, a lot of problems will be solved before they grow out of control. Let us hope for the better and try to play our individual parts in preventing similar tragedies in the future. Pakistan Zindabad

Knowledge!
By: Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker nowledge knows tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in fruit salad. This is simple truth about how to live life. Some people call it “street smart”; some call it wisdom, understanding etc. The bottom line is things also need to be understood and applied in wisdom. We have high opinion about ourselves. We are very eager to criticize, put blame on government officer, people in general and particular but never give a penny’s thought to what we do. Competition, dishonesty etc are favourite topics of gathering but we don’t blink when we do the same for our work. We become blind in our interest and think others are blind too. It is not like that ostrich hides his face in the sand. We forget that even before child learns to speak, he does observe his family environment. The very first people a child idolizes and copies are his parents, family members. If a child misbehaves we easily blame it on teachers, school friends,’ oh it’s his company, he should keep good friends”. Have we ever thought may be same dialogue is said in his friend’s houses. Yes, life is difficult not bed of roses. We all have lots of problems, emotional issues, social issues these situations are difficult, and things go from bad to worse because we want at any cost in satisfying our fancies or our way of life. We overlook rules of life. Many times Solutions or choices are simple, yes may be painful but we have to accept. We cannot have everything what is priority. It is the fact that peace and happiness is directly related to our heart not in riches or things. The sooner we understand this, sooner we will know what to do it and in our life. The shortcut one takes to proves to be lost cuts. There is not replacement for hard work and intelligence. The child has to learn or educate himself/herself, think about career in life. One has to fight temptation, make right decisions and choices in life about career, love, relationships and people.
There is no alternative. Parents are one after god To make right choices we need good and strong characteristics, qualities and this does not grow like a wild grass in us. But his comes from the way we brought up, taught and values we see. Our characters are builds in base. Yes, when we know, read good things and understand and accept, we can change. When we see our parents working sincerely, honouring promises, commitments and not live the life of lies and hypocrisy, we definitely do not except children’s to do so and even if they do , they will come back to goodness. Attitude Attitude to any matter is very important. It makes us break any relationship, situation. Neither naked truth is neither acceptable nor decorated lie. When you scolds your child badly in front of others, he is not going to improve or listen, in fact on rebound he is going to be worse but if you first think all the sides or talk to your child politely in private without comparing him with anybody or anything and say matter of fact manner about the situation, his action, it will have better effect. Condemn the actions, not person. Your mature approach will make him or her realise that something wrong has to be made right, he is good and have to remain good, he is loved not his mistake No gain without pain We have to go through some painful moments to balance between what is to be done and what is wanted but friends that is beauty of life, secret of success. Stages Of Grief !
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
G
rief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or some other loss, the stages of grieving are somewhat the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person MUST go through the five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. But, as stressed, ALL five stag-
es must be completed for healing to occur. 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving. 3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals
with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing and praying for them to come back. 4-Depression-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, selfpity, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic. For any inquiries please email at shabnam@skcounselling.ca

21 Y O U TH Migrant Pakistani student’s Eton College scholarship dream comes true Rabi ul II 3,1439 December 22, 2017
LONDON: The son of a Pakistani migrant from one of London’s most deprived areas is to follow in the footsteps of Princes William and Harry after getting a scholarship to study at the world-famous elite boarding school – Eton College – which has educated 19 British prime ministers. amza Shaukat, 15, who lives in Ilford in East London with his parents, has been offered a two-year scholarship of around £80,000 to study Alevels at Eton which is known for teaching children of Britain’s ruling elite, aristocrats and wealthy people from around the world. The 15-year- old, who will study A-Level Maths, Physics, Economics and Geography at Eton starting next year, told this reporter in an interview that he is looking forward to the challenge but won’t forget his roots. “I have this extraordinary opportunity that I will grab with both hands.”
H
Hamza’s story is remarkable. In Pakistan Hamza studied at Dar-e-Arqam before passing a test to study at District Public School in Jauharabad. He moved to the UK with his parents in 2010 and knew little English but was quick to adapt after getting admission in Woodlands Junior School in East London. He credits his family for instilling the work ethic that has helped him succeed and rise as well as fueling him with the motivation to break these barriers.”The 15-year- old, who excels at sport as much as he does at academics, told this correspondent that his dream has come true, he wants to create a society at Eton for a unique teaching method and intends to join the numerous sports teams and take part in extra-curricula’s such as the debating competitions. “I will start at Eton in September 2018, I am preparing by achieving the highest grades possible across all my subjects in my GCSE’s and by getting
immersed in super-curricular activities such as more STEM awards, sports, and leadership opportunities.” “I was very happy to make it to the initial shortlist of 20 candidates from across the world, after which I went to Eton for a stay of 4 days where I went through a rigorous set of tests and got an insight into boarding life at Eton. I am very thankful to my school for allowing me to develop my portfolio and strengthen my traits for success beyond just academics.” Hamza Shaukat won another prestigious scholarship at the age of 13 after competing with numerous applicants to travel to USA and study at Phillips Exeter Academy for 5 weeks in the summer. “That was an excellent opportunity for me to broaden my horizons; I got an insight into the opportunities at offer in the USA as well as into boarding life at an elite school.” Hamza Shaukat says “He wants Pakistani
children to receive brilliant education to propel Pakistan further. I want to be able to go back to Pakistan to my home village near Mianwali called Bala Sharif and build a school to allow people there to have access to good education. I want to give all Pakistani children the same opportunities I have received to allow them to maximise the potential they have.” Source:thenews.com

Lif e a n d Ti m e s o f Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah Entry into politics.
F
ew individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.” Stanley Wolpert 141st Birth Day of Quaid e Azam By:Saad zubair, Shikarpur) Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born on 25th December 1876 at Vazeer Mansion Karachi, was the first of seven children of Jinnahbhai, a prosperous merchant. After being taught at home, Jinnah was sent to the Sindh Madrasasah High School in 1887. Later he attended the Mission High School, where, at the age of 16, he passed the matriculation examination of the University of Bombay. On the advice of an English friend, his father decided to send him to England to acquire business experience. Jinnah, however, had made up his mind to become a barrister. In keeping with the custom of the time, his parents arranged for an early marriage for him before he left for England. In London he joined Lincoln’s Inn, one of the legal societies that prepared students for the bar. In 1895, at the age of 19, he was called to the bar. When Jinnah returned to Karachi in 1896, he found that his father’s business had suffered losses and that he now had to depend on himself. He decided to start his legal practice in Bombay, but it took him years of work to establish himself as a lawyer. It was nearly 10 years later that he turned toward active politics. A man without hobbies, his interest became divided between law and politics. Nor was he a religious zealot: he was a Muslim in a broad sense and had little to do with sects. His interest in women was also limited to Ruttenbai--the daughter of Sir Dinshaw Petit, a Bombay Parsi millionaire--whom he married over tremendous opposition from her parents and others. The marriage proved an unhappy one. It was his sister Fatima who gave him solace and company.

By: TARIQ KHOSA former DG, FIA. few years back at one occasion of Benazir Bhutto’s birth anniversary, her husband and PPP’s co-chairman spoke about her murder and said: “We cannot withdraw the FIR, no matter how much pressure you exert on us and how much you fight for that.”Heraldo Munoz of Chile, the head of the UN commission that probed Benazir Bhutto’s murder concluded as follows: “Probably no government will be able or willing to fully disentangle the truth from the complex web of implication in Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.” I read the former Chilean diplomat’s personal account in his book Getting Away With Murder with great sadness because the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under my command on Aug 6, 2009 was entrusted with the responsibility of taking over the investigation from Punjab police. The Special Investigation Group was given the task of putting together a joint team of various law-enforcement and intelligence agencies to carry out further investigation and interrogate possible suspects. The investigation into Benazir Bhutto’s murder has hinted at a complex web of implication. I distinctly recall that night of Oct 18, 2007 when as inspector general police, Balochistan, I was glued to the TV watching the huge procession Ms Bhutto was leading in Karachi after finally returning home from a
Jinnah first entered politics by participating in the 1906 Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress, the party that called for dominion status and later for independence for India. Four years later he was elected to the Imperial Legislative CouncilThe All-India Muslim League was founded in 1906. But Jinnah remained aloof from it. Only in 1913, when authoritatively assured that the league was as devoted as the Congress to the political emancipation of India, did Jinnah join the league. When the Indian Home Rule League was formed, he became its chief organiser in Bombay and was elected president of the Bombay branch. “Ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity.” Jinnah’s endeavours to bring about thepolitical union of Hindus and Muslims earned him the title of “the best ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity,” an epithet coined by Gokhale. In 1915 the two organisations held their meetings in Bombay and in 1916 in Lucknow, where the Lucknow Pact was concluded. Meanwhile, a new force in Indian politics had appeared in the person of Mohandas K. Gandhi. Both the Home Rule League and the Indian National Congress had come under his sway. Opposed to Gandhi’s Non-co-operation Movement and his essentially Hindu approach to politics, Jinnah left both the League and the Congress in 1920. For a few years he kept himself aloof from the main political movements. He continued to be a firm believer in Hindu-Muslim unity and constitutional methods for the achievement of political ends. After his withdrawal from the Congress, he used the Muslim League platform for the propagation of his views. But during the 1920s the Muslim League, and with it Jinnah, had been overshadowed by the Congress and the religiously oriented Muslim Khilafat committee.
To bring about such a rapprochement was Jinnah’s chief purpose during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He worked toward this end within the legislative assembly, at the Round Table Conferences in London (1930-32) and the introduction of reforms in the north-west Frontier Province. But he failed. His failure to bring about even minor amendments in the Nehru Committee proposals (1928) over the question of separate electorates and reservation of seats for Muslims in the legislatures frustrated him. He found himself in a peculiar position at this time; many Muslims thought that he was too nationalistic in his policy and that Muslim interests were not safe in his hands, while the Indeed, the Muslim League was a house divided against itself. The Punjab Muslim League repudiated Jinnah’s leadership and organised itself separately. In disgust, Jinnah decided to settle in England. From 1930 to 1935 he remained in London, devoting himself to practice before the Privy Council. But when constitutional changes were in the offing, he was persuaded to return home to head a reconstituted Muslim League. Soon preparations started for the elections under the Government of India Act of 1935. Jinnah was still thinking in terms of co-operation between the Muslim League and the Hindu Congress and with coalition governments in the provinces. But the elections of 1937 proved to be a turning point in the relations between the two organisations. The Congress obtained an absolute majority in six provinces, and the league did not do particularly well. The Congress decided not to include the league in the formation of provincial governments, and exclusive all-Congress governments were. Creator of Pakistan. Jinnah had originally been dubious about the practicability of Pakistan, an idea that Sir Muhammad Iqbal had propounded to the Muslim League conference of 1930; but before long he became convinced that a Muslim homeland on the Indian subcontinent was the only way of safeguarding Muslim interests and the Muslim way of life. It was not religious persecution that he feared so much as the future exclusion of Muslims from all prospects of advancement within India as soon as power became vested in
the close-knit structure of Hindu social organisation. To guard against this danger he carried on a nation-wide campaign to warn his coreligionists of the perils of their position, and he converted the Muslim League into a powerful instrument for unifying the Muslims into a nation. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, addressing a procession on 23rd March, 1940 At this point, Jinnah emerged as the leader of a renascent Muslim nation. Events began to move fast. On March 22-23, 1940, in Lahore, the league adopted a resolution to form a separate Muslim state, Pakistan. The Pakistan idea was first ridiculed and then tenaciously opposed by the Congress. But it captured the imagination of the Muslims. Pitted against Jinnah were men of the stature of Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. And the British government seemed to be intent on maintaining the political unity of the Indian subcontinent. But Jinnah led his movement with such skill and tenacity that ultimately both the Congress and the British government had no option but to agree to the partitioning of India. Pakistan thus emerged as an independent state in 14th August, 1947. Jinnah became the first head of the new state i.e. Pakistan. He took oath as the first governor general on August 15, 1947. Faced with the serious problems of a young nation, he tackled Pakistan’s problems with authority. He was not regarded as merely the governor-general; he was revered as the father of the nation. He worked hard until overpowered by age and disease in Karachi. He died on 11th September, 1948 at Karachi.
eration” was carried out to eliminate their leader. PPP spokeswoman Sherry Rehman declared she had died from a bullet injury. These statements and the suspicious conduct of Khalid Shahenshah, a security guard who had been caught on TV footage making suspicious signals from near the stage close to BB prior to the exit from the rally where she was murdered, required a thorough probe. We decided to start our investigations by seeking assistance from interior minister Rehman Malik, who was Ms Bhutto’s chief security officer. Accordingly, I sent across to him in writing on Aug 12, 2009 a note through his trusted staff assistant director of FIA, seeking the following: 1) copy of the letter sent by BB to Gen Musharraf on Oct 16, 2007 naming three suspects; 2) copies of emails sent by BB to Mark Siegel and others identifying threats from Gen Musharraf; 3) a copy of BB’s original will; 4) a copy of the final agreement exchanged between BB and Gen Musharraf; and 5) copies of correspondence between CSO [Rehman Malik] and the governments of Pakistan and Sindh on security-related matters. There was no response. Meanwhile, interrogation of five arrested accused, namely Aitzaz Shah, Sher Zaman, Hussnain Gul, Muhammad Rafaqat and Rasheed Ahmed, as well as some other crucial leads led us to aim for arrest of one Ibadur Rahman resident of Malakand who, we believed, played a key role in BB’s murder. (However, this key plotter was reportedly killed in the first-ever drone strike in Khyber Agency in May 2010 or in an attack carried out by a Pakistani fighter plane.) Another suspect was al Qaeda’s No 3 leader and financial and operational chief Mustafa Abu Yazid alias Sheikh Saeed Al-Masri who was said to have claimed responsibility for “terminating the most precious American
asset who vowed to defeat Mujahideen”. He was reportedly killed in a CIA drone attack on May 22, 2010 in North Waziristan. Similarly, the crucial suspect or witness Khalid Shahenshah, the security guard hired allegedly by a trusted confidant of the party leadership, was killed in Karachi a few months after Ms Bhutto’s murder. An important meeting of the FIA investigation team was held on Oct 28, 2009 in the interior minister’s presence. My directions were clear: place all the evidence and leads before the UN team. While the UN commission was generally critical of the conduct of relevant stakeholders, including the earlier Punjab police JIT, it did note in its report that the second JIT by the FIA “has been more vigorous in carrying out its investigations”. In yet another important meeting held at the interior minister’s residence on Nov 25, 2009, the FIA investigators reviewed the progress and asked the agencies concerned for apprehension of key suspect Ibadur Rehman from Khyber Agency. They were also given the go-ahead to visit Madressah Haqqania in Akora Khattak for adducing further evidence. Officers were also assigned to visit the UAE, Saudi Arabia and United States for obtaining evidence from key sources that could shed further light on the conspiracy. Within days of setting a clear direction for the investigators to move forward on the case, I was transferred from the FIA. The case is under trial and I will avoid drawing conclusions. The UN commission submitted its report in May 2010 and their conclusions and recommendations were commented upon by me as a professional in a confidential letter addressed to the then prime minister. The political and security establishment consigned those recommendations to the dustbin of history. Truth hopefully shall prevail eventually. Source:Dawn,

nine-year exile. The bombings that targeted her cavalcade that night resulted in 149 deaths and injuries to 402. Ms Bhutto survived that deadly attack and lodged an FIR by becoming a complainant herself. Police did not register the case that she filed on Oct 21, 2007 in which she wrote: “I was informed by the government that certain militant groups wanted to attack me. After receiving this information I wrote a letter dated Oct 16, 2007 to the president of Pakistan informing him of my grave concern regarding my security and specified the forces and persons behind them whom I suspected were likely to harm me physically.” The investigations remained stalled until she was assassinated on Dec 27, 2007. The Karsaz case was finally re-registered on Oct 17, 2008, after Gen Musharraf was forced to quit as president in August that year and Mr Zardari had become president. Meanwhile, the UN mission started the formal probe in July 2009 and the federal government entrusted further investigation to the FIA on Aug 6, 2009. Codenamed ‘Operation Trojan Horse’, the case investigation team was tasked with collecting ocular testimony as well as documentary, forensic and circumstantial evidence prior to the Oct 18 Karsaz attack, events between Oct 19 and Dec 27, and post Dec 27, 2007 developments. It was decided to record testimony of all those travelling in the vehicle along with BB: driver Javed; SSP Security Imtiaz Hussain; Makhdoom Amin Fahim; Naheed Khan; Safdar Abbasi; and valet Razzaq. Senator Safdar Abbasi and his wife Naheed Khan had publicly claimed that “sharp sniper fire and a typical intelligence op-

Big gains for PCB in updated FTP
The PCB made considerable gains in its scheduling for a new Future Tours Programme (FTP) during a workshop held in Singapore earlier this month. Last week ESPNcricinfo reported on a version of the FTP that Full Members took into the workshop, held on December 7 and 8. By the end of the meeting members produced an updated FTP in which there were minor adjustments to the total commitments of most members. The biggest gains from that meeting, however, were for the PCB. The earlier FTP showed 104 internationals scheduled for Pakistan between May 2019 and May 2023. The updated version has them playing 121 internationals - they have two Tests, five ODIs and 10 T20Is more than in the earlier FTP. That total puts them on a more even footing with countries such as Australia (123), Bangladesh (124), South Africa (122) and New Zealand (119). It is not yet clear who the extra matches have been arranged against. The FTP will likely undergo further tweaks - though not significant ones - as members aim to present a final version at an ICC board meeting in February. Not included in the PCB’s totals is a bilateral arrangement with Cricket West Indies (CWI), which will mean more limitedovers games in the four-year period. The PCB is also thought to be involved in discussions with members for limited-overs triseries in the next cycle. Add to that Asia Cup matches (which are not included in the FTP total) plus the obligatory ICC tournaments and they could end up not far below the number of internationals they are scheduled to end with in the current FTP (from May 2014 to May 2019): 183. There is also the pending matter of 19 matches against India, from an earlier agreement, the fate of which rests on an ICC dispute resolution process. The PCB will play 30 Tests in the new FTP, a number that officials say could have been higher had there not been three ICC tournaments in the cycle that run through the Pakistan home season, as well as an expanded six-week window for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The World T20 in Australia in 2020
is scheduled for October-November that year, as is the Champions Trophy in India the following year (though neither tournament, traditionally, lasts that long), and the 2023 World Cup in India is across February-March. In fact, the latter will require a shifting of the PSL window for that year, likely to be brought forward. In any case, the PCB has been eager to emphasise that its engagements in the new FTP will be about quality of contest rather than quantity. Opponents have been classified on the basis of
the value they provide to a broadcast deal - by the PCB’s working, 46% of their total home games in the next FTP will be against high-value opponents (Australia, South Africa, England and Bangladesh), 30% against mid-value opponents such as New Zealand and West Indies and the remaining against low-value teams such as Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan. Nearly half of Pakistan’s away matches, it calculates, are against high-value opponents. Source: Cricinfo
Madam Noor Jehan’s 17th death anniversary observed

7th death anniversary of famous singer ‘Melody Queen’ Noor Jehan was observed on Tuesday. Born as Allah Wasai on September 21, 1926 in Kasur, Noor Jehan started her musical career from Calcutta at the age of nine as a talented child star. She was renowned as one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia and was given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum. After partition, she moved from Bombay and started her film career in Pakistan as actress, singer and the first female film director with film “Chann Wey” in 1951. If a Hebrew prophet spoke from his cradle, she crooned at birth. When Noor Jehan was born on September 21, 1926 to an impoverished musician Madad Ali in Kasur, her aunt rushed out to greet her father thus ‘Congratulations brother! This girl will change your fortune for
she cries in tune.’ She recorded about 10,000 songs in various languages of India and Pakistan including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi. Noor Jehan ruled the film industry for more than 35 years and sung appropriately six thousand songs for Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi films. Not only was she a celebrated playback singer but also a gifted ghazal singer. She also gave Pakistan a new genre, which later developed into a category we all know today as national anthems or milli naghme. The new beginning was made during the 1965 war, when Madam sang live on radio and TV some of the most gripping songs ever composed . In 1957, Noor Jahan was awarded the President Award for her acting and singing capabilities. On December 23, 2000, she died as a result of heart failure and was buried in Karachi. The nation had lost a legend.
