The empire strikes back
UST as the situation seemed to be settling down a bit, the country was caught in another whirlpool of political uncertainty. The game is on and it is getting murkier. The political re-engineering in Balochistan has gone rather smoothly. Political loyalty has never been a virtue in this troubled province, yet it needed a masterstroke to have a minority party installed in government by getting disparate groups to come together. Remarkable machinations saw the majority party dissolved into nothingness overnight, and a non-political entity — who was elected to the Balochistan Assembly with less than 600 votes in the 2013 general elections — installed at the helm. It has indeed been an amazing turn of fortunes, even in a country where shifting political alignments have long been a norm. There is no denying that the members of the ruling coalition may have their own reasons for discontent but it certainly needed a facilitator to ignite the rebellion and make sure that it succeeded. It is not very hard to guess who could be the conductor of this surgical strike that has changed the political dynamics in the country just two months before the midterm Senate elections. It has also raised questions about the coming general elections being held according to schedule. The empire has struck back bringing down a staunch Nawaz Sharif loyalist as the former prime minister ups the ante by intensifying confrontation with the apex court and the security establishment. His tenor has become even more strident defying all predictions of him having been reined in by his erstwhile hosts in the holy land.
Sharif is not backing down and the security establishment will not let him come back at any cost. The confrontation has threatened to destroy the entire political edifice of democracy. This is a no-holds-barred confrontation that may spin completely out of control. The Balochistan episode has demonstrated the power of the deep state and its apparent ability to manipulate the system from within and without completely subverting it. But it may not always work.
There is an opportunity for unelected elements to further weaken Nawaz Sharif’s position.
Now the battleground has shifted to Lahore, the Sharif citadel of power, where Tahirul Qadri is leading the charge and Sharif’s two bitterest political rivals are joining hands against him. The 2014 Model Town carnage has long been an Achilles heel of the PMLN government in Punjab, but making public on court orders Justice Najafi’s inquiry committee report has given impetus to the demand for the removal of the Punjab chief minister. Shahbaz Sharif’s position has become more beleaguered with widespread anti-government protests in the aftermath of the Zainab murder case in Kasur. Meanwhile, the newly emerged powerful Barelvi extremist groups have also stepped up pressure on the government. The controversy has triggered an internal revolt in the PML-N led by an influential cleric. It is apparent that the younger Sharif too is in the eye of the storm. It is certainly a well-calculated move by the opposition parties to target the man who is the PML-N
nominee for office of prime minister in the coming elections. Having distanced himself from his older brother’s policy of confrontation, Shahbaz Sharif had made himself acceptable to the security establishment. He was also seen as a leader who could keep the party united. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ruling against the NAB petition to reopen the Hudaibya money-laundering case gave him huge relief. Both Shahbaz Sharif and Hamza Sharif were nominated in the case. But the latest wave of protests in the province has brought him under tremendous pressure. That also raises questions about the party maintaining its unity as Nawaz Sharif’s confrontation with the establishment comes to a head. With his relentless attacks, he has strengthened what appears to be an unintended nexus between the top judiciary and the security establishment. There may not be a direct connection between the Balochistan episode and the Qadri-led opposition’s anti-government campaign, but it does provide an opportunity for the unelected elements to further weaken Sharif’s position. It may not be an orchestrated move yet it has the potential to paralyse the Punjab government, widening the cracks in the party. Certainly, it could not lead to the Balochistanlike internal revolt bringing down the Shahbaz administration. But it could deal a serious political blow to the party close to the general elections. Although the PPP and the PTI are at loggerheads and there is no possibility of them entering into any formal alliance, both find it politically expedient to join Tahirul
Qadri’s sit-in. Their main objective is to keep up the pressure on the Punjab government. For the PPP, it could provide an opportunity to infuse some life into the party in the province where it has lost ground. However, it remains to be seen to what extent the PTI can gain from the agitation. Qadri is just an instrument in the whole episode. With all the opposition parties ganging up against him and the possibility of a brewing discontent within the PML-N turning into a full-scale rebellion, the ousted leader finds himself pushed to the wall. His possible conviction by the accountability court on graft charges in the next few months may seal his political fate. That leaves him with few options other than going down fighting. Many believe that he is fighting a losing battle. It is, however, not such a straightforward situation. While Sharif is on a warpath taking on the two most dominant institutions of the state, his party still rules both at the centre and the most powerful province of Punjab. Despite being disqualified, he still heads the ruling party and continues to guide the federal government. A major crisis is waiting to happen. How would the state institutions, including the federal government, respond in the event of the accountability court convicting Sharif and his children? A highly explosive situation is developing on the eve of the general elections. It is hard to see how the government, the opposition parties and the security establishment can deal with this imminent crisis and save the political system. It is an extremely uncertain situation. The appeal Against John Nuttall and Amanda Korody is Islamophobic
By Imtiaz Popat The appeal of John Nuttall and Amanda Korody’s acquittal of terrorism charges by the BC Supreme Court starts on January 15 in the BC Court of Appeal. The appeal will run from January 15 to 17, with the decision to overturn the decision to dismiss the terrorism charges can come as early as January 17. The couple who newly converted to Islam, was acquitted of terrorism charges by the BC Supreme Court in June 2016, after declaring that they were victims of entrapment by the RCMP. The ruling by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Bruce that the pair was no threat to public safety. “The world has enough terrorists, we do not need the police to create more,” Bruce said. They were a part of an RCMP sting operation to entrap them in an attempt to blow up the BC legislature. It clear that they were targeted because they are Muslim. “There was no imminent risk of harm to the public or the need to disrupt ongoing criminal activity,” Bruce said. “The police were acutely aware that without the constant supervision and direction provided by (the undercover officer), the defendants would be incapable of completing their part in the plan.” A recent federally commissioned report recommends that the Trudeau government create a new body to review the ac-
tivities of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canada Border Services Agency. The report, prepared for Public Safety Canada, says the body would fill a gap by independently scrutinizing public complaints about the pubic officers’ behavior. The new watchdog, the Canada Law Enforcement Review Commission, would also be able to initiate its own studies of trends and systemic problems. The proposed body would review both the CBSA and the RCMP, replacing the existing complaints commission for the Mounties, given the frequent overlap between the two enforcement agencies. In the mean-time. Crown Council is proceeding with appeal against John Nuttall and Amanda Korody. A petition has been started to stop the appeal. h t t p s : / / w w w. c a u s e s . c o m / campaigns/112217-for-the-rcmp-tostop-spying-on-and-entrapping-muslims
‘Annoyed Cousins’.
By: Gulshan Aalani It seems our cousins Jewish brethren of B’nai Brith are really annoyed by the comments made by a Muslim Br. Tarek Ramadan. We can just say sorry to them to ease their anger, and give them the facts that nothing malice was intended by expressing very common majority opinions repeated by Br. Tarek, who is a human rights activist and has a sound mind with normal human heart. Whatever spoken by him must be spo ken in a spur of a moment and with pain after seeing so much sufferings of Palestinians that makes our Blood boiling. We all have normal human hearts and seeing the Children killed in front of their parents and some locked up behind Bars that is more than enough to loose control of our minds. Same comments are made by the nonMuslims most disturbed by the illegal occupation and inhumane treatment of Palestinians, blaming the Zionists who
are considered as dangerous as ISIS-fake Muslims most hated by the world First time I heard the name ‘Zionist’ through the Media and documentary, and ID of Bani Israel-12 tribes of Prophet IsraelJacob (AS) well explained by Rev. Dr. Meredith (www.tomorowsworld.org). The name of the land was changed to ‘Israel’ (In 1948 by U.N.). Most hated Millions of Muslims are still Bani Israel and Jews. ‘Muslim’ is their religious ID and not the tribal ID. The historical tribal- birth ID is most important, as it is stamped in the DNA. Major misconception is that all the Palestinians are Muslims, forgetting the Palestinian Christians, Catholic, Druze, Ismaili etc. Heart wrenching suffering of Palestinian Christians by the hands of Zionists reported on TV documentary ‘Aid to the Church in Need’. Some non-Muslim H. R. activists, taking advantage of law of the land of ‘Freedom of speech’: saying: “how stupid are these Palestinian children throwing stones at Soldiers with the Guns, why can’t they too get the Guns then fight the equal fight?”. Their reaction and outburst was after seeing the documentary of Palestinian children being killed by the Israeli Soldiers. Though, Rabbi David explained well and gave his honest opinion in the Newspaper Al Ameen. He is well known to Muslim community and considered as their own, who does attend some of the Demos organized by Palestinians. Some young wonderful Jewish H. R. Activists I know since I converted to Islam, and admire their joint work with Muslims, proving we have a lot in common besides being righteous Samaritans, belief in equality, Justice, sharing Scriptural religions, Allah, Prophet Moses (AS) and our ID of ‘people of the Book’. A good quality of a human is to show courage to stand up against the hu-
man rights violators, who discriminates against other humans, grabbing their homes turning them into homeless etc. The law of the land doesn’t even allow the ‘Squatters’ to occupy the empty buildings as it is considered a crime. We all have a right to freely express our opinions based on reality and not out of hatred like President Donald’s abusive words: ‘Islamic Terrorists’ or the Cartoonist abusing the Universal Messenger Muhammad (SAWS), or atrocities against the Palestinians or ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims whose children too are burnt alive and killed. Yet, such evil criminals are not charged and walking free with the license to kill. However, if Trump’s colluding with Russia is illegal then his colluding with P.M. Netanyahu is illegal and a crime. Muslims must not worry about the wild decision of unauthorized Trump who is not GOD but known antiImmigrant, dictator, Apollyon and a partner in crime of P. M. Netanyahu anti-Christ, ignorant of the facts that by such declaration they have insulted our Messiah Jesus (AS). Who when returns, entering through the Golden Gate, to the Al-Aqsa Mosque to pray. This time no one can even lay a finger on him or try to crucify him because millions of Muslims- still Bani Israeli will be protecting him. InshaaAllah. Best to follow the same action of early Believers in pre-Islamic period who prayed and left it to Allah to protect the Kaba when the notorious King Abraha Ashram came to destroy the Kaba but miraculously him and his Army were destroyed by the stone thrower Birds on Allah’s order. Mall Road protest: Former rivals join Qadri in bid to ‘send Sharifs home’
LAHORE: Rival opposition parties joined hands with Tahirul Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) in an antigovernment protest on Wednesday in a bid to seek justice for victims of the 2014 shootings in Lahore’s Model Town. The allied opposition parties — which included the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Awami Muslim League (AML), Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP), and others — threatened to topple the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led government and said they would announce their next course of action in the coming days.Addressing the rally on Lahore’s Mall Road, PAT chief Tahirul Qadri claimed the Sharifs would not be able to step out of their homes if he mobilises his workers.“You won’t be able to step out of Jati Umrah, if I ask my workers,” Qadri said, taking the stage once again in the second session of the rally. “We are holding a meeting within two days, and will an-
nounce a date. We will call a meeting of APC parties, its steering committee,” he said. “It has been decided that you will go home; you will have to go home,” he warned the ruling PML-N. He said the joint opposition would soon announce its next course of action. Qadri, however, failed to bring Imran Khan and Asif Ali Zardari on the stage at the same time, with the PPP cochairperson and his party leaders addressing the first session of the rally, and PTI leadership dominating the second half of the show of political power in the heart of Lahore. Khan, who is a vocal opponent of Zardari, listened to the PPP co-chairperson’s address on television at Jahangir Tareen’s residence and departed for the venue only after Zardari stepped down from the stage. Addressing the rally, Khan lambasted the parliament for allowing a ‘criminal’ to be elected a party president. “I curse the parliament that made a criminal the president of a party,” he said, in an apparent reference to the PMLN’s decision to elect ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif as its president. ”The two [Sharif] brothers are responsible for the Model Town incident,” said Imran. “I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it [Model Town incident] was done on orders received by the police.” Former President and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) cochairman, Asif Ali Zardari while addressing the rally, said Pakistan faced danger from Jati Umrah referring to the Sharif family residence. “They [PML-N] know that they can be disqualified any time, but I just think for Pakistan,” said Zardari. NAB Lahore has been conducting an inquiry against management/officials of Punjab Land Development Company (PLDC), Lahore Casa Developers,

China, Russia urged to get serious about Netanyahu disappointed by ally enforcing sanctions against North Korea Modi’s Jerusalem rejection
North Korea may have been the main target, but China and Russia were also in the crosshairs Tuesday as Canada huddled with some of its closest partners to discuss how best to put an end to Pyongyang’s nuclear aspirations. The main complaint? That China and Russia were not doing enough to enforce United Nations sanctions against North Korea and strangle its nuclear and ballisticmissile programs. A call for all nations to enforce sanctions against North Korea was the main focus as Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and counterparts from the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Britain kicked off the highprofile gathering. A total of 20 countries, the majority of which were invited because of their support for South Korea during the Korean War more than 50 years ago, took part in the meeting. Canada and the U.S. called the meeting in response to Pyongyang’s recent nuclear and ballistic-missile tests, which have rattled the international community and thrust North Korea to the top of the list in terms of global crises. Freeland and others who spoke before going behind closed doors to continue their deliberations were unanimous in their belief that efforts to isolate North Korea and stop its sources of income were starting to bite. And despite a thawing of relations and resumption of talks between North and South Korea in recent weeks, there was unanimity in the need for real progress on denucleari-
zation before any easing of pressure. “Our message is clear,” Freeland said. “The pursuit of nuclearization will bring you neither security nor prosperity. Investing in nuclear weapons will lead only to more sanctions and to perpetual instability on the peninsula.” One of the questions heading into the meeting was whether participants would endorse a U.S. call for naval interdiction of North Korean shipping, following concerns about smuggling. Yet there was also clear frustration at the fact some countries, notably China and Russia, were not doing enough to prevent Pyongyang from skirting the sanctions. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was most direct as he called out North Korea’s most influential neighbours -- and warned of consequences if they did not do more. “We all must insist on full enforcement of UN Security Council sanctions, as this is the letter of the law,” he said. Freeland and others, meanwhile, emphasized that they were not seeking regime change, and suggested that by abandoning its nuclear aspirations, Pyongyang would help bring a safer, more prosperous future to its people. Whether that message resonates with Kim Jong Un’s regime will have to be seen, but analysts have long asserted that it sees nuclear weapons as the ultimate guarantor of its survival in any conflict with the U.S. Source: ctvnews.ca
WASHINGTON: President Ashraf Ghani has said that the Afghan National Army will not last more than six months without US support and the Afghan government will also collapse. Mr Ghani acknowledged his government’s almost absolute dependence on Washington in an interview to a television show CBS 60 Minutes, broadcast earlier this week. But Gen John Nicholson, the commander of US forces in Afghanistan, said in the same programme that with America’s new strategy and with increased US pressure on Pak istan to cooperate, he was certain he could win Washington’s longest war, which was now in its 16th year. According to a transcript released on Tuesday, a CBS journalist asked the Afghan president to comment on what she had heard from people in Afghanistan: “If the US pulled out, your government would collapse in three days.” “From the resource perspective, they are absolutely right. We will not be able to support our army for six months without US support, and US capabilities,” President Ghani responded.
In a report titled “Kabul under siege while America’s longest war rages on”, the US news channel noted that “in 16 years, the Afghan war has cost 2,400 American lives and $1 trillion. But with the country’s capital under siege, the end still seems far away.” “Did you just say that without the US support your army couldn’t last six months?” the journalist, Lara Logan, asked again. “Yes. Because we don’t have the money,” Mr Ghani said. The US contributes around 90 per cent of Afghanistan’s defence budget and observers in Washington say that in 16 years the US and its allies have only made some moderate gains. They claim that the Taliban still control large chunks of land in the Pashtun belt and the government in Kabul has so far been unable to dislodge them. In the interview, President Ghani also acknowledged the threatening presence of 21 international terrorist groups in his country, adding that dozens of suicide bombers were also being sent to Afghanistan. “There are factories producing suicide bombers. We are under siege,” he said. “By terrorising the people, the Taliban have sown deep doubts about the government.” Unlike President Ghani, Gen Nicholson appeared confident that he could still win the war. Asked if he had everything he needs, the general said: “Yeah, with the new policy I do … this is the end game. This is a policy that can deliver a win.” Last week US officials said the Pentagon would deploy an estimated 1,000 new combat advisers to Afghanistan and would send additional drones and helicopters. Afghan army to collapse in six months without US help: Ghani
NEW DELHI: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday he was “disappointed” by India’s refusal to back recognition of Jerusalem as his country’s capital but would not let it spoil his landmark visit to the Asian giant. Netanyahu also vowed that Israel would “catch up” with the killers of a Jewish couple murdered in 2008 attacks in Mumbai whose son is accompanying him on a six-day trip to India. The Israeli leader arrived Sunday at the head of the biggest business delegation he has taken on a foreign visit. Netanyahu told the India Today media group, in an interview released Monday, that he has a “special relationship” with his counterpart Narendra Modi. But the run-up was clouded by India joining more than 100 countries at the United Nations in voting last month to condemn Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. “Naturally I am disappointed but I think this visit is a testament to the fact that our relationship is moving forward on so many fronts,” Netanyahu said in the interview. Ahead of the visit, India also canceled a $500 million deal for Israeli Spike anti-tank missiles. Israel exports an average of $1 billion of military equipment each year to India, but Modi wants to end India’s status as the world’s top defense importer. But Netanyahu was again optimistic on the missile deal. “I hope that this visit can help resolve this issue because I think there is a reasonable chance we can reach an equitable solution,” he said. Declaring that no details could be given until the end of his tour, Netanyahu added: “Our defense relationship is quite significant and it encompasses many things.
“I think the keyword is defense. We want to defend ourselves. We are not aggressive nations, but very committed to making sure that noone can commit aggression against us.” Netanyahu is the first Israeli leader to visit India in 15 years. The prime minister and his wife Sara were welcomed at New Delhi airport by Modi, who made history in July when he became the first Indian leader to visit Israel. Modi also stressed how the “historic” visit would “further cement the close friendship between our nations.” Netanyahu expects to sign new agreements in energy, aviation and cinema production. He is to visit the Taj Mahal and Modi’s home state of Gujarat as well as hold meetings with Bollywood stars in Mumbai. But he will also make an emotional visit to a Jewish center targeted in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, a symbolic gesture to India’s tiny Jewish community. Netanyahu is accompanied by 11-year-old Moshe Holtzberg whose parents were among 166 people killed by Pakistani militants in co-ordinated attacks on the city. “Ultimately we will catch up with the killers but the objective is also to prevent future killers,” Netanyahu said in the interview. Ex-CIA officer arrested for retaining classified information
WASHINGTON: A former Central Intelligence Agency officer was arrested at a US airport on Monday night in connection with charges that he illegally retained highly classified information, the US Justice Department said Tuesday. Jerry Chun Shing Lee, a US citizen who now lives in Hong Kong, used to maintain a top secret clearance and began working for the CIA in 1994. The Justice Department said that in 2012, FBI agents searched his hotel rooms during trips to Virginia and Hawaii. They discovered he had two small books containing handwritten information on details such as the true names and numbers of spy recruits and covert CIA employees. He was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The case is being prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. But Lee made his first court appearance on Tuesday before a federal magistrate judge in Brooklyn. The judge ordered Lee held without bail. A federal public defender who represented Lee at Tuesday’s hearing declined to comment. According to an affidavit filed by an FBI agent, Lee, 53, served in the US Army from 1982 through 1986 and worked for the CIA from 1994 through 2007. The FBI agent wrote that Lee and his family left Hong Kong in August 2012 to travel to northern Virginia. Along the way, they stayed
in hotels where the FBI found the books. The small books were discovered inside Lee’s luggage, sealed in a small clear plastic travel pack. The handwritten information inside ranged in terms of classification, but the agent said at least one page contained top secret information, “the disclosure of which could cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security of the United States.” The agent also noted that classified cables Lee wrote while he was a case officer describing his interactions with CIA assets were reflected in the two books. Lee was interviewed by the FBI five separate times in 2013 and never disclosed he had the books. He also met with former CIA colleagues around that time without returning the materials to the government, the Justice Department said. Source: arabnews.com

John Horgan changes tune on BC Hydro rate freeze
I nt
Premier John Horgan seems to be backing away from a key election promise to freeze BC Hydro rates in an effort to achieve affordability.During the campaign, the NDP government promised a freeze for all customers, noting that rates have climbed more than 24 per cent over the last four years. But now the premier says a blanket freeze on rates may not be the best way to ease people’s bills. ”I am now more convinced than ever that a better course of action on affordability is not a blanket reduction or freezes, but targeted to those who can best benefit from relief in this area,” John Horgan said Tuesday. Nothing is expected to change anytime soon.
CTV News was told the idea of targeted incentives was part of ongoing conversations, and Horgan said he’s been interested for years in some type of means testing. Horgan’s change of tune came two months after the province claimed to put a scheduled 3 per cent hike on hold. In November, Energy Minister Michelle Mungall told BC Hydro to ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to pull back on increasing rates in 2018. If approved, the freeze would come into effect April. At the same time the government is reviewing BC Hydro’s books to look for cost savings to keep customers’ future rates low. Source: CTVNEWS
A Metro Vancouver high school is mourning the loss of one of its own after a boy hit by a stray bullet during a weekend shooting. Alfred Wong was riding in the backseat of his parents’ car when gunshots rang out on a busy Vancouver street Saturday evening. Two people died of their injuries: the 15-yearold Coquitlam high school student and a 23-year-old believed to have been the target. Police believe the latter took part in the shootout. A third person, a 30-year-old bystander from Vancouver, suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene then released. Alfred, who attended Pinetree Secondary School in Coquitlam, B.C., was identified to CTV News on Tuesday as students and staff struggled to come to terms with his sudden and senseless death. The school district said it is providing support services to those affected by the tragedy. The teen was part of a youth group at the Coquitlam Christ Church of China, according to another member who posted to social media asking for prayers. Alfred was also a member of the New Westminster Hyack Swim Club, and his coaches had to inform his teammates of his death at a practice Monday night.“They were shocked,” coach Frici Laszlo told CTV, saying that he and his friends had big plans for their future. “Some of them cried. Some of them were speechless. Some of them asked for a little break.” The death also affected those who didn’t know Alfred personally, including the mayor of Coquitlam.“This hurts us all. A death like this hurts every member of our community,” Richard Stewart said. “And when it’s such an innocent life, not part
of the gangland surroundings that caused the gunfight, it makes it even worse.” The 23-year-old who also died as a result of the shooting was identified by police as Vancouver resident Kevin Whiteside. Police said he was known to them, armed on Saturday night and had a criminal record that included charges of assault with a weapon and uttering threats. None of the allegations have been proven in court and the investigation is in its early stages. In a message to CTV, his sister described him as “kind, loving and protective. “He doesn’t deserve what happened to him and he doesn’t deserve to have his name all over the news like he’s a horrible criminal,” she said. The case was immediately made a top priority for police, who assigned more than 50 officers to the investigation.“Every time criminals decide to exchange gunfire on our streets, they endanger the lives of everybody around them. The events of Saturday night were reckless, were reprehensible, and there’s no justification for this type of senseless violence in this city,” Vancouver Police Chief Const. Adam Palmer said Monday. Investigators are still searching for a suspect or suspects in the case and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. In particular, anyone with video of the shooting or aftermath is asked to contact police. Someone who works at a nearby business told CTV News their surveillance camera captured an armed man with a bandana over his face following behind a group of people. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

Watchdog asks if racism played role in aboriginal man’s in-custody death A complaint about the in-custody death of a First Nations man in Prince George, B.C. last summer is raising questions about the Mounties’ account of what happened and whether racism played a role. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association has written to the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP, asking the agency to ensure there’s a transparent and independent investigation into the death of Dale Culver. “We’re hopeful they’ll look into allegations of very serious misconduct against RCMP members in Prince George,” BCCLA executive director Josh Paterson told CTV News. Culver, a 35-year-old Wet’suwet’en father of three, was taken down by officers on July 18, 2017 after a struggle. Officers deployed pepper spray and placed him in a police car, where he stopped breathing. Culver died in hospital. The police account the next day said Prince George RCMP received a report that a man was “casing vehicles” in a parking lot that evening, and tracked Culver down. But the BCCLA complaint says that “casing vehicles” report may have come in long before the arrest – raising the question about whether Culver was even the man officers were looking for. “We understand that the call to police about a suspect potentially “casing out” vehicles may have been received several hours prior to the police interaction with Mr. Culver that resulted in his death. Regardless, we question on what information or basis the member or members of the RCMP began their interaction or questioning of Mr. Culver, and/or a request to identify himself in the first place,” the complaint reads. “This tragic incident, as it has been described, gives rise to a question as to whether the RCMP members’ actions may have been affected by explicit or implicit racial bias,” the complaint says. The RCMP didn’t answer questions from CTV News on the case today, referring only to their previous press release. Those who knew Culver say he struggled with alcoholism, but worked in the forestry industry and was trying to turn his life around. “I think when a person is arrested, I don’t think they should end up dead,” said
Terry Teegee, a regional chief of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations. Culver’s death has left a 14-year-old daughter, a 6-year-old son, and a baby fatherless, said his cousin Debbie Pierre.“This is absolutely devastating to us,” she said. “How he passed has been excruciating for his mother clan and his father clan,” she said. The possibility that Culver was picked up because he was First Nations is frightening, she said.“I don’t want (Culver’s) passing to be in vain,” she said. “It could have been anybody. Do we want to see this happen again and again? There needs to be change.” B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office is also looking into any potential criminal conduct by the RCMP in the case. The IIO’s Chief Civilian Director wouldn’t answer questions about his investigation into timeline of the “casing vehicles” report or what police knew about Culver before the arrest. But Ron MacDonald did say that the IIO is still looking into allegations that officers asked passersby to delete cellphone video of the incident.“Given the nature of those allegations, if proven, they could constitute criminal conduct, so we’ve been investigating that as well,” MacDonald said. He said the agency is still hoping to hear from any witnesses who may have seen officers delete any videos. Victor Jim, a hereditary and elected chief of the Wet’suwet’en, told CTV News that there has been prejudice against First Nations people by authorities for “as long as they’ve existed.” “I think we need to culturally educate the RCMP,” he said. “Lots of them aren’t culturally sensitive, or culturally aware. Lots of racial profiling goes on with our people.” Source: CTVNEWS

FAITH Narated By Abu Huraira : The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.”Sahih Bukhari Vol 001, Book 002, # 008.

When an Illiterate Man Was Asked to Read ?
By: Spahic Omer hen Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received his first revelation, he did not know how to read or write. 23 years later, having fulfilled his prophethood mission, he died without knowing how to read or write. To make things more intriguing, his greatest miracle was a book, the Holy Qur’an, which challenged the whole of humankind to produce at any point of time and in any geographical context a single surah (chapter) the like thereof, if they were in doubt about the authenticity of the Qur’an; he made knowledge seeking incumbent upon every Muslim, male and female, and produced a reading community that always prided itself on the intellectual and cultural legacies it created; he sowed the seeds of a civilization that changed the course of human history forever, the hallmarks of which were always knowledge, science and wisdom. When Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received his first revelation in the Cave of Hira’ through the angel Jibril (Gabriel), he was asked to read (iqra’). However, since he was an ordinary person, who could not judge things and events except by conventional earthly standards, he was astounded, replying both with fear and astonishment: “I am not literate (I cannot read)”. He was asked two more times to read, but after each time he answered that he was not literate and so, couldn’t read. After that, the angel conveyed the intended first revelation: “Read in the name of your Lord Who created; created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous Who taught by the pen; taught man that which he knew not” (al-‘Alaq, 1-5). In the above incident, there was an encounter between -- or a convergence of -two types of reading. The first type was a conventional one that stood for a process of decoding symbols so as to construct or derive meaning, which was represented by Muhammad (pbuh) who was yet to be appointed the prophet. The second type of reading was put forth, and was represented, by the angel Jibril. It was a new heavenly reading paradigm, which was hitherto unknown. It was a divine gift from the Creator to His creation. On account of this, it is understandable why both the Prophet (pbuh) and Jibril persisted in their respective ways. To the Prophet (pbuh), it was strange to be asked to read, for he was unread. Thus, he could not say anything except that he was illiterate. But to Jibril, such by no means was a bizarre act,
for he was laying down a ground-breaking vision of reading that transcended everything man had previously known. That Jibril asked the Prophet (pbuh) three times to read, before giving him the first revelation, every time seizing the Prophet (pbuh) and pressing him so hard that he could hardly bear it, could connote waking him completely up from the worldliness of his being, thought and experience, and preparing him fully for the import and weight of the words that were to follow – and of the prophethood mission in general. The new reading paradigm was summed up in the given revelation. The Prophet (pbuh) was asked first and foremost to read and recite the Qur’an which was revealed directly upon his heart (al-Shu’ara’, 194). He thus always felt as though the Qur’an had been engraved on his heart. His reading and reciting of the Qur’an was coming from the heart and was targeting people’s hearts as well before anything else. Such was happening effortlessly and naturally. No even slightest reading mistakes, hesitation, stuttering, messing up, or failing to remember was ever recorded about the Prophet (pbuh), irrespective of the oscillating general circumstances and the psychological as well as physical conditions of the Prophet (pbuh). The Qur’an is a book of signs (ayat), guidance, clear proofs and criterion, the ultimate objective of which is to be applied in everyday life. However, life with its multitiered realities is also made replete with signs (ayat), guidance and clear proofs, which are as manifest in the slightest and most modest as in the grandest and most sophisticated. Hence, implementing and living the Qur’an signify an amalgamation of its ayat, guidance and clear proofs with the same, entailed in the life phenomena, in order that the purpose and objective of existence are achieved. Reading the Qur’an, it follows, means also reading and exploring life as a locus of the implementation of the former. It likewise denotes reading life’s infinite portents and signs (ayat), serving as an indispensable supplement to the proper reading, comprehending and applying of the signs (ayat) and messages of the Qur’an. No reading of the Qur’an is complete without reading life, and no reading of life is appropriate without reading the Qur’an, because the Qur’an is meant for life, and life, in turn, is steered and sustained by the Qur’an. The only solution for man, therefore, is the combination of two readings. The solution is about quality, rather than quantity. It is

light and guidance. It is a guarantee of success and happiness in both worlds. Hence, though illiterate, the Prophet (pbuh) was the most knowledgeable, most enlightened and wisest man that ever lived.
Towards Reviving the Iqra’ Concept
about devising most effective methods and most productive outcomes for real life and its gripping challenges, rather than excessive rhetoric, idealism and abstract theorizing. It is perhaps no coincidence that iqra’ as an imperative is derived from the verb qara’, which means not only to read, but also to combine, integrate and bring things together. This spirit is implied in Almighty Allah’s words that reading should be done only in the name of “your Lord Who created; created man from a clinging substance”. This means that reading should be done solely for the divine -- not personal or any other – goals, and for the realization of a higher order of things and their meanings, for such is the implication of the concepts of lordship (rububiyyah) and servitude (‘ubudiyyah) that stand at the core of the Islamic message. Similarly, it means that Allah’s creation is to be read as much and as fervently as His revelation, as both are His and have originated from Him. Their objectives are identical: to reveal and disseminate the truth at all planes of the life phenomenon. Thus, the “read” injunction and Allah’s attribute as the Creator are communicated together. This is further accentuated by the subsequent words that Allah is “the most Generous Who taught by the pen; taught man that which he knew not”. Granting man the Qur’an as a revealed book, as well as an ontological “qur’an” or the “book” of creation (al-qur’an al-takwini) is a sign of Almighty Allah being most Kind and Generous to man in his capacity as Allah’s vicegerent on earth. Allah further granted man every means and opportunity to succeed in his projected task. Failure is not an option and can never be justified. The new reading paradigm brought by the angel Jibril in the cave Hira’ was about the reading of revelation (the Qur’an), life with all its dimensions, and the self. It was as comprehensive and holistic as the Prophet’s mission itself. The new reading was at once physical, cerebral and spiritual, corresponding to the character of its aim: man and life, as well as the heavens and the earth. A person, it goes without saying, may be illiterate, but a good, insightful and knowledgeable reader. In the same vein, a person may be educated and literate, but ignorant and unwise. True knowledge is identified with

No wonder this awareness led to the creation of a powerful Islamic civilization whose most conspicuous characteristics revolved around the notions of knowledge, education, wisdom and science. It was a civilization of learning (reading), which was caused and sustained by learning and learned (reading) generations. Such was an engine of Muslim civilizational growth and cultural enrichment through centuries. It was only when such a spirit was lost that Islamic civilization started declining, and the Muslim community started losing ground to other nations and their less adequate patterns of civilizational progress. Today in the age of globalization, as Muslims grow more and more desperate in their quest to restore their cultural and civilizational identity and respect from others, they should know that the only way forward is the revivification of the universal concept of iqra’ (read!), as revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the Hira’ Cave, and everything such concept entails. That endeavour would bring an end to many alien, inept and outright useless alternatives Muslims have adopted in recent times in order to fill the void left by their gradual abandoning of the original iqra’ scheme. If revived, the authentic iqra’ process would minimize memorization – unfortunately often associated with little or no understanding whatsoever – replacing it with a combination of better comprehension and practical application of knowledge. In passing, memorization in the past, when there was no technology and books were either rare or extremely expensive, was something, and memorization today, in the era of technology and when books are both easily available and affordable, is something else. Today almost every Muslim has downloaded on his smartphone – a gadget without which, in actual fact, life is unimaginable -- the Qur’an with its translations and numerous commentaries, anthologies of the Prophet’s sunnah, encyclopaedic works on fiqh, sirah, Muslim history, etc. Every aspect of Islamic knowledge is constantly with a person and is available at his fingertips. Everyone is a walking encyclopaedia, so to speak, in the sense that practically everyone has limitless access to limitless knowledge at all times. ....more...........................Source: Islamicity

Bridging the Gap Foundation promotes discussion on Youth issues and collabortionamong Muslim leaders On January 6th and 7th, the Muslim community converged at SFU Surrey for two days for two spectacular events hosted by Bridging Gaps Foundation. The first day was titled “Key Conference 2018 - Muslim Youth Speaking for Change” where youth was invited to speak on various issues such as Racism within Muslim communities, Masjid & Youth: Attendance and Involvement, Understanding Moderation in Islam, Being fully Canadian Muslims and Reconciling God’s Justice and Evil. Youth from ages 14 and up spoke confidently and Aapanel of qualified and well-reputed judges provided their constructive feedback and distributed prizes accordingly. These judges were Sheikh Moutasem Al Hameedy (Founder at Rashidoon.com and Imam at Abu Huraira Center - Ontario) and Sister Hafsa Dean Thompson (Registered Counselor, Public Speaker, and Educator - Vancouver). Both judges also discussed these topics with audience.
The second day, “Righteous Leadership”, was a workshop designed to equip leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a higher level of influence. Parents, Muslim volunteers, Imam and Masjid board members were invited to enjoy the tremendous advantages of a deeper understanding of the workings of the self and the soul and how they shape the type and level of influence leaders are able to achieve. This event was also a chance for Muslim organizations, volunteers, community leaders and general members of the Muslim community in Vancouver to network with each other and establish strong relationship amongst each other. The events were well-received by the attendees and exceeded expectations. It was a great step for the foundation towards reaching its goal to establish a strong collaboration between multiple mosques, organizations and muslim student clubs in and around Vancouver.
Surrey Jameh Masjid hosted Youth forum with RCMP Sgt. Stanford On Jan 6th, the BCMA Surrey Jameh Masjid committee organised a Youth forum with RCMP. GRC to discuss youth issues in community, schools and colleges. Sgt. R. Corporate convention centre ‘ideal’ for Sears’ old spot in Surrey
Surrey Board of Trade says former location in Guildford is great spot for ‘first-class’ facility. By:TOM ZYTARUK
SURREY — The Surrey Board of Trade would like to see a corporate convention centre replace the Sears department store that permanently closed for business at Guildford Town Centre on Monday.
Ivanhoe Cambridge owns the mall and at press time was silent on what the future will hold for the former Sears site. But Anita Huberman, CEO of the board of trade, said the board would like to see something “very similar to the Vancouver Convention Centre” occupy that spot, at 10355 152nd St. “Something that’s beautiful, that’s maybe even linked to an existing hotel chain where
they can provide that first-class corporate style service,” Huberman said. Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner maintains that “with the LRT (light rail transit) going through there any of those business opportunities represent a good location.
Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner
“I would not have any comment over that location over any others that may come to mind relative to a location,” Hepner told
the Now-Leader. “I think certainly the time is right for the city to have some conference space and that’s as good as any given that the transportation option is there.” Sears Canada’s final hour at Guildford Town Centre was 6 p.m., Jan. 8, according to the shopping mall’s website. The department store chain, which had been in business since 1953, received the green light from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Oct. 13, 2017 to begin liquidating its inventory, furnitures, fixtures and equipment on Oct. 19. As a result of the closure of 74 stores across the country, including the one at the Guildford mall, some 12,000 employees have lost their jobs. Riordan McCarthy, retail leasing director for Guildford Town Centre, told the Now-Leader on Wednesday that he couldn’t say who the site’s next occupant will be. “No further update at the moment. Nothing that I can report on officially, no,” McCarthy said. “When we have secured a replacement we would have a more cohesive announcement. Very rarely will we announce independently to one party without sort of announcing to the world.” Huberman said the board of trade has pitched the idea for a convention centre with the mall owner. “We met with Ivanhoe Cambridge early last year for the possibility of that site being used as a convention centre because we feel that there was going to be some type of redevelopment around the 104th area, there was an empty parking lot there, lots of land and we thought it would be an opportunity because we’re so starved for that convention centre that we so desperately need — a nice corporate convention centre — and so I know that with the light rail transit it would have been the ideal location around that corridor. “I know that at that time they weren’t looking at that as a possibility,” Huberman said. “They had other plans in place from corporate. I think it really presents an opportunity, though, for Guildford Town Centre. The whole concept of brick and mortar retail is really changing, that whole paradigm of online shopping has really come to the fore and in fact continues to change and I think the whole reality of retail is in an ongoing transformation. I think for Guildford Town Centre, for Surrey in itself, I think that available space that is now presents an opportunity for Ivanhoe.” Source: Surrey Now-Leader

area where he was positioned before continuing to shout at and over Trudeau as he tried to calm the heckler down. The prime minister offered him the chance to remain in the auditorium if he remained seated and quiet, but he refused and was escorted out by security after shouting about corruption and wrongdoings of the Supreme Court. As the man left, Trudeau explained that he was disturbing the event. The man hollered “You’re disturbing me!” The town hall at Western University was the third in a series of six such meetings, and came as Trudeau holds a two-day retreat for his cabinet in the southwestern Ontario city. Cabinet ministers mingled with students and other members of the audience in the packed auditorium. Outside, a long queue of people, who began lining up at 1 p.m. ET, waited in the rain hoping for a seat. During the first two town halls — in Lower Sackville, N.S. and Hamilton — the prime minister endured heckling and drew applause as he faced a broad range of questions on topics that covered everything from federal drug policy, to the Liberal government’s $10.5 million payment to Omar Khadr, to concerns over former ISIS fighters returning to Canada. Electoral reform In London, Trudeau, who also serves at the minister of youth, was asked about electoral reform by a questioner who said she was disappointed that he wasn’t going to make sure that every vote in the country counts. The prime minister’s promise, later broken, to do away with the first-past-the-post electoral system was a vote winner among Canadians under the age of 25 in the last election. The vast majority of audience members Thursday evening also fell into that age group. Trudeau answered that Canada’s democracy could be improved, but that any attempt had to be done very carefully. It was a version of the response he had used in the past. “Changing the way we vote, changing the way we function as a democracy and as dem-
ocratic institutions is an important thing and is something you have to get right,” Trudeau said. “Because once you change something, sometimes it’s difficult to change it back.” Trudeau explained that he is in favour of a system that lets voters rank their choices, rather than one that encourages voting against candidates. “I wasn’t going to do something that I felt would harm Canada and weaken our democracy just to tick a box off on an electoral platform,” he said. “I understand that you were disappointed about that but ultimately, my responsibility is to do things that are good for this country and when I saw that the electoral reform was going in a direction that wasn’t going to be good for this country I put that promise aside.” Reconciliation Trudeau was also asked about the degeneration of political dialogue, and said his government’s public policy is based on informed thought and evidence over rhetoric. “It might win elections, but [rhetoric] doesn’t leave society or the country any better off. And I do believe that reason will win out over time,” as long as it comes with passion, he said. Trudeau’s next town hall will be in Quebec City on Jan. 18. Later in the month, he will host town halls in Winnipeg and Edmonton, but no specific dates for those events have been released.
By:ennifer Saltman The province is asking the directors of a Surrey society for evidence of what it has done with a $200,000 government grant it was awarded nine months ago. In November, Delta-North MLA Ravi Kahlon began looking into why the previous Liberal government gave New Horizons Village Society, which is run by three men with ties to the B.C. Liberal party, the grant just 16 days after the society was incorporated. The society had proposed to do a feasibility analysis, including preparing a business plan, to build a community centre for the Fraser Valley and Surrey. In a statement last month, the society said that none of the money had been spent and the project was “in the infancy stages.” “The fact that nothing has happened so far … it raises more questions about the whole process,” said Kahlon. Kahlon has since passed his findings on to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, which sent a letter to two of the society’s directors, Satnam Johal and Kul-
winder Singh Badesha. Jagmohan Singh is also a director.“The Ministry has recently understood, from information attributed to the Society through media, that no funds have been expended to advance the project. Could the ministry please receive a status update?” assistant deputy minister Tracy Campbell wrote. A copy of the letter also went to Deputy Minister Jacqueline Dawes. Kahlon said that to his knowledge the ministry has not yet received a response, but he hopes to hear something early in the new year. He said his phone has been ringing off the hook since the story came out in South Asian and mainstream media, with calls from both concerned citizens and community groups. “For me, it’s just trying to get to the truth of this thing — to find out what happened, and why they were given this money, and what the decision making was around it because ultimately, we need to ensure that if there is a flaw in system that it gets corrected,” Kahlon said.
During his investigation, Kahlon also found that another Surrey-based society, SPARK Education Foundation, commissioned a feasibility study for a similar cultural and wellness centre in 2011. The study was prepared by SHAPE Architecture Inc. and done in consultation with the City of Surrey. The proposed Sports, Arts, Culture and Harmony (SACH) Centre was envisioned to be a recreation and community centre for Newton and a destination for members of the South Asian community. The idea was to include a gym, fitness area, restaurant, lounge, kitchen, computer labs, multipurpose rooms, daycare and leased office space. SPARK Foundation president Amarjit Samra said the project, which was well-known in the community because of the consultation that was done, did not proceed because the provincial government rejected the foundation’s funding request in 2012. However, Samra hopes it will become a reality some day and would be happy to work with anyone interested in making it happen.

for approximately 40 new supportive housing units and relocation of up to 40 shelter beds from the Salvation Army shelter. It also announced $15 million in new funding for rental housing aimed at seniors and low-income families. And while Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read is applauding the move to buy 11749 and 11761 Burnett Street, she knows homelessness is a contentious issue in her city. “We’ve had a lot of really significant hiccups along the way with the Liberal government,” she told On The Coast host Gloria Macarenko.“This is the latest in a line of pro-
PM says he put electoral reform aside when he saw it was going in direction that would hurt country. By Kathleen Harris, Peter Zimonjic, CBC News Justin Trudeau’s third town hall of his crosscountry tour saw repeated interruptions from two persistent hecklers who interrupted questioners and attempted to shout down the prime minister before one of them had to be forcibly removed by police. The first came when Trudeau was trying to answer a question from a young boy who asked how he deals with his “haters.” “I don’t really have to worry too much about being defined by what someone thinks of me,” Trudeau said, noting that, as a child, people would tell him that they did not like him because their parents didn’t like his father. A woman then stood up in the crowd and started shouting about free speech, the security threat posed by Canadians who left to join ISIS and are now beginning to return home, and the decision to locate the town hall at a university. She was also upset about M-103, the motion passed in the House of Commons that called on federal politicians to condemn Islamophobia Shortly afterward, another questioner was interrupted by a man shouting at Trudeau, without the benefit of a microphone. The RCMP surrounded the man and he eventually sat down. Not long afterwards the man stood up and threw a stack of papers from the raised seating
The evening finished with a question about the government’s approach and commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous people.
Trudeau said he gave his ministers a clear mandate to do something every past government had failed to do: Change the fundamental nation-tonation relationship. But he said the long-term solutions to the problems caused by residential schools must ultimately come from Indigenous leaders, not Parliament Hill. “No matter how we might have a great idea in Ottawa on how to fix it, the solution can’t come from Ottawa,” he said. Trudeau said it will be a long, slow process that must be defined and delivered by Indigenous people. The government is working to help preserve Indigenous language and culture and said that as a Quebecer, he understands the need to “resist assimilation.”
B.C. government asks Surrey community centre society for progress report
“Certainly the idea is there, and it’s much needed, and the community wanted it. We would like to give it another try if it will fly,” said Samra. “It was a very good idea — it’s a win-win for everyone.” New Horizons Village Society director Satnam Johal responded via text message to a request for comment, saying, “We have not received any letter from the ministry” and confirming that the grant money remains unspent. He said he is aware of the SPARK Foundation feasibility study. http://vancouversun.com
Province buys land for homeless shelter in Maple Ridge, B.C.
By Liam Britten, CBC News A new homeless shelter is planned for Maple Ridge, B.C., a community that has shown hostility to the idea in the past. But according to a spokesperson for a longrunning tent city there — Anita Place — the purchase will do nothing for the more than 100 homeless people living there. The provincial government announced Thursday it had purchased a section of land in Maple Ridge for $3.6 million to be used
posals that has come forward so we’re hoping to see this move ahead,” she said. “We’ve been waiting two years on this and that’s a really long time for people who are outside in the cold to be waiting. This can’t happen fast enough.” The first one of those hiccups, Read said, was a proposed low-barrier shelter that was scrapped after community opposition and government cancelling the plan. The second was a temporary shelter that when closed was supposed to be followed by a more permanent solution but which never materialized.

Wanted terrorist Abdullah Al-Qalaf killed in eastern Saudi Arabia
JEDDAH: Saudi security men shot dead a Saudi national accused of carrying out a number of terrorist crimes after he opened fire on them on Monday evening. State security authorities were monitoring Abdullah bin Mirza Ali Al-Qalaf, according to an official source. The official said Al-Qalaf was found near a farm between the towns of Awamiyah and Qudayh in a silver Hyundai Sonata car bearing a false license plate. The operation occurred during security
monitoring and surveillance of terrorist elements in the town of Awamiyah in Qatif province, the source said. Al-Qalaf refused to comply when security personnel tried to arrest him and he opened fire. Security officials were required to deal with him accordingly to neutralize the situation, and Al-Qalaf was killed. No bystanders or security personnel were injured. Saudi security found the following weapons in his car: 1. Kalashnikov submachine gun.
2. 9mm glock pistol caliber 3. 94 machine guns. 4. 14 pistol rounds. 5. Anti-flash gear. 6. Equipment holder. 7. Military suit. 8. Four face masks. The head of the State Security has confirmed that they will continue to follow these criminal elements and will deter and prevent anyone who breaches security with such terrorist activities.
Bahrain: Radar tracks show Qatari jets flying by Emirati airliners DUBAI: Bahrain released radar tracks on Tuesday it said showed Qatari fighter jets passing by Emirati commercial airliners on their way to the island nation, encounters which started a new dispute between the Gulf nations amid the diplomatic crisis gripping Doha. The UAE will lodge a complaint against Qatar at the UN aviation agency. The UAE will accuse Qatar of violating the Chicago Convention, which governs the use of airspace, in a complaint to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), UAE
General Civil Aviation Authority Director-General Saif Mohammed Al-Suwaidi told Reuters. Al-Suwaidi said two Qatari warplanes twice flew dangerously close to the UAE airliners as they descended toward Bahrain International Airport in separate incidents on Monday, and could be seen by the pilots and passengers.“It’s a very obvious violation,” he said by phone. Al-Suwaidi said the UAE aircraft had been intercepted in airspace managed by Bahrain. He refused to say whether their flight paths had
taken them across Qatar, the most common route from the UAE to Bahrain. Al-Suwaidi said he was confident that ICAO could stop Qatar from repeating Monday’s incidents but that the UAE could consider to rerouting its flights as a precautionary step. Changing flight paths can be costly for airlines if it means flying longer routes and subsequently using more fuel, often their biggest single operating expense. AFP, REUTERS
Rabbani warns against emerging nexus of US, Israel and India
Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani has warned the Muslim world that the emerging nexus between the United States, Israel and India is a major threat to the ummah. According to a press release issued by the Senate secretariat on Wednesday, Mr Rabbani sounded the warning while addressing the 13th session of the Parliamentary Union of Islamic Countries (PUIC) being held in Tehran. He said that Pakistan strongly opposed the US attempt to alter the legal and historical status of Al Quds, adding that the move was a blatant violation of international law and United Nations Security Council’s resolutions. The co-sponsoring of the UN resolution on the Al Quds issue had brought US pressure on Pakistan and the Muslim world should realise that, the Senate chairman said. “Today it
is Pakistan and Iran, tomorrow it can be any other country. We must ... rise above divisive conflicts be it sectarian, ideological or communal. I propose that the way forward lies in enhancement of multi-stratum cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, infrastructure, investment, education, health, science and technology, agriculture, energy and defence.” He said that Pakistan had borne the brunt of the war on terror for over one-and-a-half decades. Thousands of Pakistanis — military personnel as well as civilians — had lost their lives and almost as many had been maimed and wounded, he added. Despite that, Mr Rabbani said, Pakistan would continue to play a proactive role against this tide of extremism and anarchy. He called for collective efforts to root out the
menace of terrorism and said that the Muslim world must not let a handful of extremists and transnational terrorists to malign Islam for their vested interests. He stressed the need for promoting the true image and message of Islam as a religion of peace, tolerance and respect for human dignity, rights and freedoms. The Senate chairman said that being a forceful institutional voice of the Muslim world, the PUIC could play an important role (in this regard) through elected representatives of people. He termed the PUIC a step forward for in-
creased mutually-beneficial integration within the Muslim world as it envisaged the “strengthening of contacts, cooperation and coordination between various Muslim countries’ parliamentary, governmental and nongovernmental organisations, with the aim of advancing common objectives”. Dawnnews

ith their brains, sleep patterns, and eyes still developing, children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the sleep-disrupting effects of screen time, according to a sweeping review of the literature published today in the journal Pediatrics.
“The vast majority of studies find that kids and teens who consume more screen-based media are more likely to experience sleep disruption,” says first author Monique LeBourgeois, an associate professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder. “With this paper, we wanted to go one step further by reviewing the studies that also point to the reasons why digital media adversely affects sleep.” Of more than five dozen studies looking at youths ages 5 to 17 from around the world, 90 percent have found that more screen time is associated with delayed bedtimes, fewer hours of sleep and poorer sleep quality, the authors report. Biological, neurological and environmental factors all play a role: Because their eyes are not fully developed, children are more sensitive than adults to the impact of light on the internal body clock, the paper notes. “Light is our brain clock’s primary timekeeper,” LeBourgeois says, explaining that when light hits the retina in the eye in the evening hours it suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, delaying sleepiness and pushing back the timing of the body clock. “We know younger individuals have larger pupils, and their lenses are more transparent, so their exposure and sensitivity to that light is even greater than in older individuals.” The authors point to one study that found that when adults and school-age children were exposed to the same amount and intensity of light, the children’s melatonin levels fell twice as much. Studies have also shown that short-wavelength “blue light” -- ubiquitous in hand-held electronics -- is particularly potent at suppressing melatonin. “Through the young eyes of a child, exposure to a bright blue screen in the hours before bedtime is the perfect storm for both sleep and circadian disruption,” LeBourgeois says. The “psychological stimulation” of digital media -- whether it’s exposure to violent media or texting with friends -- can also sabotage sleep by boosting cognitive arousal, the
authors note. The authors also note that children and adolescents who leave a phone or computer on overnight in their bedroom are significantly more likely to have trouble sleeping. More than 75 percent of youths have screen-based media in their bedrooms, 60 percent interact with them in the hour before bedtime, and 45 percent use their phones as an alarm. “Digital Media and Sleep in Childhood and Adolescence” is one of 22 papers included in todays’ first-ever supplemental issue of Pediatrics to focus on screen time and youth health. In addition to summarizing past research, the papers set goals for future research, including looking at the impact of screen time on toddlers and preschoolers. “The digital media landscape is evolving so quickly, we need our research to catch up just to answer some basic questions,” says Dr. Pam Hurst-Della Pietra, founder of the nonprofit Children and Screens, which helped orchestrate the issue. A recent report from Commonsense Media showed mobile media device use has tripled among young children since 2011, with kids under 8 using them 48 minutes per day and many parents incorporating digital media into the bedtime routine. This summer, LeBourgeois launched a fiveyear, $2.5 million study funded by the National Institutes of Health, in which her research team goes into the homes of volunteer families, exposes children to varying intensities of light and collects saliva samples to measure changes in melatonin levels and the timing of the biological clock. Ultimately, she believes the study will reveal how little light it takes to impact sleep and circadian rhythms in young children and lead to science-based guidelines for parents and device-makers. “The preschool years are a very sensitive time of development during which use of digital media is growing more and more pervasive,” she says. “There’s a lot we don’t know.” LeBourgeois offers these recommendations for parents: Limit children’s media use in the hour before bedtime. Turn off all electronic media devices, including yours, at bedtime, and charge them in a central location outside bedrooms. Remove all electronic media from your child or teen’s bedroom, including TVs, video games, computers, tablets, and cell phones. Source: www.sciencedaily.com

pened to little Zainab in Kasur cannot be fully expressed with simple words. The heinous assault and the murder of this little angel was herrendous. This murder spread rage and fury across Pakistan, not only is it heartbreaking, but this incident has caused us as parents to feel small and miserable in front of our children. Upon hearing of this tragedy, parenthood has been shaken at its core. We cannot tell our children not to be afraid, or make them feel safe, because after this incident we feel that we have miserably failed to protect our children. The story makes us feel powerless and vulnerable. Child abuse takes place almost in every city and village around the world, including every place in Pakistan. In Kasur child abuse, rape and murder is at its extreme.
Right Punishment!!
Child labor is also rampant in this city because of the reek of corruption, those involved in abusing children feel they can get away with this hideous crime because of the police force, who is miserably lacking in its ability. Zainab was abducted January 4th, she was the eighth minor to have been raped and murdered in Kasur in the past year. The 2015’s child abuse scandal was the worst in the Pakistan’s history, 25 men gang raped 280 children. They video tapped the abuse and black mailed their parents by threatening to leak the videos. Police and government failed miserably to prosecute the culprits. The city of Kasur is close to Lahore, a political stronghold of Ex PM Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahnaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab. The most heartbreaking and sad part of the whole scenario is that the murderers are still at large, seeking protection from officials and taking refuge behind committees, GITs and supporters of the ruling party who are defending their elected members. People are
protesting because there is no progress in finding those responsible. The ruling party and the wealthy are feeling safe because they travel with their chauffeur driven cars and guards, while the poor are feeling powerless and helpless. This has been going on for the longest period of time and now people are forced to think that this phase in life is not going to change. People are in a hopeless situation, but we should never forget that that’s not the way. Life does not take into account titles, nobility, power or authority, Life takes into account intentions and deeds, and the verdict will be presented as exactly what you deserve. Rage and fury is irreversible. I request our ruling corrupt party leaders, for heaven’s sake, do not try to take the country to a point where the wrath of Allah will be the only support left for the poor, the deprived, and the weak. Stop this injustice, stop this blame game to divert the attention from the main cause, bring justice for this hideous crime. Give punishment to the criminals as
it was done in 1981, the time of Zia-Ul-Haq’s martial law, when the culprits of the murder of Pappo were hanged and the whole Lahore saw them hanged, after that as a result there was not a single incident of child abuse for almost fifteen years . It brought tears to my eyes when I saw the interview of little Zainab’s mother. Her only words, and her most powerful, were “I have nothing to say, I just want justice for my daughter”. I beg our fellow country men to seek justice this time, and I beg them not to give up by saying “gareeb ki koon suntaa hay, KUCH NAHI HOGA “
some Muslims felt that the Indian subcontinent’s Islamic and Indian heritage was being replaced by English values. The Muslim community also seemed demoralized and detached from the overall political struggle for freedom. The newspaper Vakil, which was owned by Khan Ata, was launched in 1895 in order to provide a voice for Muslim political thought. The newspaper was published by Rose Bazar Press in Amritsar (British India) and had different editors (including Maulvi Insha Ullah Khan, Sheikh Ghulam Mohammad, and Maulana Abdullah Al-Imadi) from time to time. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad also joined Vakil’s editorial team at about age fifteen and remained part of said team for the next five years. He was under the tutelage of Khan Ata before launching his own newspapers and literary works and entering politics. The Vakil emerged as a highly reputable and prominent newspaper and had subscribers in India and abroad. In 1900, the annual subscription fee with mailing charges for Vakil was six rupees for Indians and ten shillings for overseas subscribers (Vakil, Sept. 17, 1900). The newspaper carried a variety of content as well as some commercial advertisements, while its book depot published materials on the Ottoman Empire along with Allama Mashriqi’s works Tazkirah and Khitab-Misr (Mashriqi’s speech at the first global Khilafat Conference in May 1926 in Cairo). Vakil critically examined the Muslim community’s activities and promoted nationalism and a strong character based on Islamic values. The newspaper was at the forefront of safeguarding the political rights of Muslims. For example, the newspaper actively reported on the Khilafat Movement in India as well as the Turkish Ottoman Empire, First World War, and the activities of Muslims in various parts of the world. In 1900, Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II sent an appeal to Muslims of the world to support the construction of a railway connecting Damascus to the holy cities of Medina and Mecca. Khan Ata was at the forefront of promoting this effort and, through his newspaper, launched a campaign asking Muslims to donate to the project. The peo-
ple responded and a considerable amount of money was donated (as was reported in various books). As Vakil gained in prominence, the newspaper faced its share of challenges. During the First World War, censorship of the Vakil was ordered. And again in 1919, an order of pre-censorship was passed against Vakil. Khan Ata provided strong leadership during these times and the newspaper was able to make it through the adversity and remain at the forefront of Urdu journalism for decades. Khan Ata and Vakil were recognized by many individuals for their contributions. Muhammad Ali wrote in Comrade (dated Feb 17, 1912): “…Vakil has represented the best type of Urdu journalism. Its views have always been broad, wise and dignified. It has exercised an intellectual tolerance and comprehension which is rare even amongst the better class of English journalism in this country [British India].” Engineer Asghar Ali wrote in his book entitled They Too Fought for India’s Freedom, “Among all the Urdu papers of this time, Vakil was regarded as the most sober and serious paper having most weighty opinions on national affairs.” Gail Minault stated in his book entitled The Khilafat Movement: “…Wakeel had the greatest influence and circulation of any Urdu newspaper, dealt freely with Aligarh matters and Turkish-Egyptian relations, and raised money for the Hejaz railway.” Today, Vakil continues to draw attention from Eastern and Western writers and has been referenced or quoted in various books, including Professor Andrew Tait Jarboe’s book entitled War News in India. Professor Jarboe was gracious enough to email me the names of source materials where he “found several excerpts from Vakil.” Original copies of the Vakil can be found in the Lahore Museum. Some parts of Vakil have also been translated into English and can be accessed at some major research libraries (*see note below). In short, Vakil shaped Muslim political,
religious, and cultural values in the Indian sub-continent during the British Empire. It influenced the thinking of many and helped generate the spirit of freedom - among Allama Mashriqi, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and others – to liberate India from British rule. As such, the founder of Vakil, Khan Ata, made a lasting contribution to the history of the region. Khan Ata Mohammad Khan passed away on July 5, 1925 and was buried in Batala in India. Following his death, Vakil continued to be published until about July 28, 1931. *Note: Translated extracts of Vakil can be found in various files [ex. IOR/L/R/5/192] and are available in the Asian & African Studies Reading Room of the British Library. The newspaper is also available in microfilms entitled “Selections from the Indian newspapers,” published in Punjab and available in major libraries of the world, including the Center for Research Libraries (Chicago, USA). The author has thus far published many books and articles. The author also published an article on Khan Ata in the book “Men Like Allama Mashriqi Are Born Once In Centuries: A Collection of Articles.” More information about the author can be found online and on social media. llama Mashriqi’s father, Khan Ata Mohammad Khan, was a prominent Punjabi writer and political/ religious activist. Khan owned and ran The Vakil, a major bi-weekly newspaper from Amritsar in British India. Khan was a man of means and an influential figure in South Asia during his time, as such a brief biography of his contributions is important for researchers and students as well as for the history of South Asia. Khan Ata (1846-1925), son of Diwan Kamaluddin Khan, came from a well-to-do family and was a Rajput by caste. His ancestors held prominent positions in the Mughal Empire courts (details of his ancestry have appeared in various books). Khan Ata had property in Batala and Amritsar, which was passed down from his family. Khan Ata emerged as a recognized author and was well-versed in various languages, including Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and English. His works were a mix of books, articles, reports, and poems. His social circle consisted of prominent individuals of the time, including Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, Maulana Shibli Nomani, Maulana Abdullah Al-Imadi, Mohsin-ulMulk, Nawab of Loharu, Syed Jamaluddin Afghani and Mufti Sadruddin Azurda. In recognition of Khan Ata’s outstanding contributions to literature as well as for raising substantial funds for the Hejaz railway, the Emperor of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, Sultan Abdul Hamid II (who ruled from 1876 –1909) bestowed upon him the Tamgha-i-Majeedia (a high-status medal). Perhaps one of Khan Ata’s most significant contributions to society was his newspaper, Vakil. After the fall of the Mughal Empire, British influence began to rise quickly and

ADAM & EVE !
By: Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker he very first existence the couple of mankind is Adam & Eve. The very first husband and wife, then the race began. They become parents and their children get married and it continuous goes on.... Husband and wife, this relation is forever, first this relation is very powerful and strong yet at the same time very weak and brittle. If there is something wrong, something is not at peace in this relation, family is affected, thus children too and wherever they go others are affected too. Our society is made up from small units called families. Blood is thicker than water Many times, we make or break friendships. We get along with some relatives, some we don’t. We can avoid some, some we tolerate, and some tolerate us. Immediate blood relatives like parents, children even if are not together, never breaks. Son or daughter may settle somewhere else, get married, husband or wife either may die, under any circumstances the relation is always there. In a family people stay together even if relations are not good. Why We still believe in institution called family. We do whole heartedly want to make these relations work. Yet irony is, there are the problem, always some or the other issues in the family. 33 percent The passing marks are 33%, 65% more higher the study, higher are the passing marks, there are certain courses which requires more than 90% for admission. If we see basic passing percentage is 33 so if anybody has even 33% good qualities, he or she should pass in our relations and in our life. Nobody is perfect We are humans, not angels. We are bound to be somewhat good, somewhat bad. We all have types of feelings, qualities inside us. It depends on circumstances and our capacity to deal with it. We behave like angels or demons, depending on what we have inner strength to pass the difficult circumstances. Life begins at home Normally any person born is with his/her family; those who are not with families, their surroundings become their home environment. Roll model Husband and wife who are parents too their
T
own personal qualities, how their relationships are with each other with family and genes in child, these all things along with circumstances makes or breaks the child. These children become adults, their behaviour, other such adults in society, all of us affect each other with our good or bad or challenging values. Peer pressure It is like peer pressure in the society. If few people do not care about the impact of their behaviour, decisions and do whatever pleased them, it is bound to affect some other weak minded person, even strong willed person are likely to get affected too, and other people are tempted to follow some forbidden paths or norms of society. There is always something good out of bad and bad out of something good If the free, whatever pleased me, behaviour is for betterment of society, person if that is to improve the state of human being in society, it is welcomed it means when in some families, they still do not let girls go for higher studies or pursue their career. In this situation it is welcomed if few dare to go for higher education or good career. Nowadays this happens Whenever somebody wants to act in certain manner or do something, which his conscience tells him wrong i.e. having affair, contract marriage etc bribe the person tries to quiet his inner voice which does tell him, it is wrong, you should not do, by thinking that “oh, it is not a big deal. Nowadays, everybody is doing this. Who cares about what people think, nobody is bothered_ _ _ blah blah _ _ _”. This is the effect of some bad fruits in our fruit basket of society. Bottom line So bottom line is that when the most eternal everlasting relationship of Adam and Eve, husband and wife is proper good, it will affect their family life, children and at last others. So let’s improve our relationship rather than avoid the issue period. For any inquiries please email at :asmashums@gmail.com
It’s Your Choice!
Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
S
top for a moment and think about your life. How’s your health, your relationship and your sense of spiritual serenity? Your experiences today are a result of your past choices, patterns and habits. Are you happy with the way you’re living or have you fallen into a less-than-healthy habit that you just can’t seem to climb out of? NOBODY’S PERFECT. We all have at least one pattern of behavior that doesn’t serve us. We eat or drink or work too much. We choose friendships that don’t really honor us, and we react instead of responding in challenging moments. Yet in most cases, we still manage to function.
Sometimes our negative patterns have small costs – simply slowing down our progressand at other times, the price we pay for our poor choices are devastating. These choices can ruin our health, relationship, career or even our family life. You may be overeating to find comfort, drinking too much to relieve stress, or spending too many hours at the office to avoid tension at home. You have to become fully aware of the situation. The only way to do this is by being honest with yourself. The
key to making lasting, positive change is understand ing where your negative pattern of behavior comes from. There are healthy and unhealthy ways to meet the needs in our lives. If the decisions are based on unhealthy habits, it moves us away from greater empowerment and happiness. We can complain all we want, but if we don’t tackle what’s causing us having these unhealthy choices, we can’t address our deeper fears and won’t be able to make true commitment to having more balance in our lives. Without a clear understanding of our motives, we’ll keep trying to break our bad habits from the outside in and then dislike ourselves each time we fail. This leaves us feeling even more hopeless and creates a vicious cycle. The bottom line: if you want to achieve lasting positive change and become the person you know you can, have healthy choices in your life. It may be time to wake up. It may be time to gradually change direction to implement some healthy choices in your lifestyle! “GiftfromG od” Syrian Family Arriving in Canada Opens Up Opportunity to do Good Success Stories
W
hen the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, no one foresaw the devastation it would lead to. The war kept on raging. Weeks turned into months and months turned into years. When the global community witnessed the horrors of war through news media, they were determined to intervene. One such voice was that of Justin Trudeau’s. He vowed to bring in 25,000 displaced refugees into Canada and he stood by his word. Adbul Jabbar, his wife and two kids were among the displaced Syrian refugees that got accepted into Canada. When the Jabbars first arrived in British Columbia, they were placed in a Surrey hotel and were provided winter clothing. The Jabbars’ expenses were all paid by the Canadian government. Once they moved into their rental apartment, they were allocated a monthly stipend to pay for rent, food, and other expenses for the first year. Upon the completion of the first year, they were expected to become financially independent. Being new to Canada, Abdul didn’t know a word of English. He was a truck driver in Syria and his wife was a pharmacist technician. Abdul drove a truck for over twenty years in Syria. It’s all he knew. Naturally, he wanted to continue working in this trade in his Canada and for that he needed a driver’s license. Abdul visited a driver licensing office in Vancouver along with the
Muslim Food Bank caseworker, Saira Saleem. Saira had taken up the Jabbars’ case only three months after their arrival in Canada. Saira helped fill out licensing forms and interpreted his conversations with the office representatives. There was a problem though. The licensing officer would not accept Abdul’s driving experience from back home. Saira thought if his Syrian experience is not accepted, Abdul would have to wait years before being able to sit for a test to be licensed to drive commercial vehicles such as trucks. She knew how much Abdul wanted to start working. Saira didn’t give up. She took him to another driver licensing office. Fortunately, that branch added Abdul’s previous driving experience to his file. Abdul now has his full license to drive small cars. Next, he needs to learn English because the test for driving
trucks has to be taken in English. He attends English classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. He can’t wait to speak English fluently. “The biggest barrier for this family is language,” said Saira. She recalls Abdul telling her about his days in the densely-populated refugee camp in Jordan. Abdul, his wife and two kids were forced to stay there for one whole year before they emigrated to Canada. Abdul had to work twenty hours a day to earn enough just to get by. He is glad that’s not the case here. What’s more, his kids get to attend school. There were no schools in the refugee camp they were in. A few months ago, a bank teller wouldn’t open an account for Abdul because he couldn’t provide his social insurance number. Abdul didn’t know what a social insurance number is, he didn’t have one in Syria.
He called Saira and she helped him out. Saira also helped Abdul apply for extended healthcare insurance. This was important for Abdul because he suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and his medicines costs add up quickly. “When someone asks you for help, it’s a gift from God,” Saira says about managing the Jabbar family’s case. She is modest when talking about her contribution in Abdul’s success. She says these are only the first steps of his journey in Canada and that he will accomplish a lot more on his own. The same effect was not reported in those who showed similar behaviours - such as helping, sharing and comforting - towards their family and friends.
“This study helps us to understand that young people who help those with whom they do not have a relationship report feeling better about themselves over time,” explained the study’s co-author, professor Laura Padilla-Walker. “Given the importance of self-esteem during the teen years, this is an important finding,” she added. “It suggests there might be something about helping strangers that impacts one’s moral identity or perceptions of self in a more significant way than helping friends or family members, although these are beneficial behaviours as well.” Padilla-Walker and her team of researchers examined the behaviour of 681 adolescents between the ages of 11 and 14. They tracked their measures of selfesteem over a three-year-long period and had participants repeatedly respond to a series of 10 statements such as “I am satisfied with myself ” in order to establish how their levels of self-esteem changed during this time.
They concluded that participants showed higher levels of self-esteem after just one year of prosocial behaviour. The teens’ levels of prosocial behaviour were monitored via self-reports, where participants were asked to respond to statements such as “I help people I don’t know, even if it’s not easy for me.” “Not all helping is created equal, and we’re finding that prosocial behaviour towards strangers is protective in a variety of ways that is unique from other types of helping,” PadillaWalker explained.
She added that prosocial behaviour could be particularly beneficial for teens who tend to focus on themselves and that helping those who are less fortunate than they are may benefit them as much as those they are helping. “It is best if teens can directly see the benefit of their help on others. This can increase gratitude in young people and help them to focus less on their own problems.” Such behaviour will also encourage them to meet new people, which will also boost confidence levels, she concluded.

Parent Teacher Interviews W
1. hen your teen daughter/son comes home from school, you may want to allow them between 1 to 2 hours to do whatever she/he likes . But what that means is that what they do must be Halal and approved by you first. For example, if they want to watch (non-Islamic) music videos, it’s not acceptable. Re-direct her to Islamic nasheeds and songs instead on YouTube. Check out the Parenting Tips (part 2) on this webpage: Go through the points mentioned there carefully, in shaa Allah. And if you agree that it is a good technique, you can implement them. You see, it’s quite important to make sure that these “free time” sessions are actually Halal “free time” sessions and not the opposite. Let your teens know why it is haram to do certain things and talk to them more about other issues as well. Don’t just say, “Because it’s Haram.” or “Because I said so.” and you do not explain. Please explain further in a calm manner, in shaa Allah. (If you yourself do not know why a certain thing is Haram, do your research first before
speaking to your teen. Or ask a Sheikh or Imam or Islamic Studies teacher.) We don’t want your daughter or son to think that “everything fun is Haram” but at the same time, we don’t want her to think that she can do whatever she/he wants without limits. There are limitations and she/he must know how to entertain herself correctly. In a Halal way, of course. 2. If she wants to use her/his laptop and mobile, she/he may use it only outside her/ his bedroom. Showing you what she/he is watching every now and then. No mobile and laptop usage in her/his bedroom. They
are rubbish bins which pour filth into your daughter’s/son’s heart and mind. We trust your daughter/son but we don’t trust shaytan. Tip: When your teen says, “Don’t you trust me, Mum/Dad?” Say, “Of course I do, I just don’t trust shaytan.” 3. Parental or profanity or kid-safe or restriction mode or cyber-safety child filter app or software must be installed in the mobile and laptop. 4. What can she do in her/his room after school then? Hobbies of course. Don’t have any? Find one with her/him ASAP. If one hobby doesn’t work well, change it to an-
other one in a few weeks or a few months. No worries in shaa Allah. 5. If she/he can’t comply to these standards and rules, then, she/he HAS to face consequences. What consequences? For example, you need to either take her/his mobile away (in my opinion, she/he shouldn’t have one yet anyway) or take away one or two of her other privileges or punish her/him through doing more chores, or take away TV rights for a week, etc. Basically, she/he needs more discipline. But discipline requires you to teach her/him and explain to her/him about the behaviour and practices of a Muslim. It also means that you need to spend more time with her. Point blank punishment without explanation is not recommended at all. You and your spouse must talk to her/him more. And spend time with her/him more, in shaa Allah. Islam has rules and regulations to keep us all safe from harm and the Jahannam. We have to instill in her/him that rules keep us safe. Shaytan is an enemy that has many tools in his toolbox. May Allah protect us from shaytan always. Ameen. Yaa Rabb.

Qadri and Zardari also held a meeting in Lahore earlier in the day, which followed a joint press conference by the two figures. Speaking to the media, Zardari said the time had come for the rulers of the country to go home. He said that Sharif brothers still wish to save their rule. He said the purpose of their protest was to get rid of incumbent Punjab government and they would soon get them out of power. Source: Dawn.com

While reviewing US-Pakistan relations under the Trump administration, the book shows US President Donald Trump’s faith in the utility of American strategy that has impacted US-Pakistan ties. The book includes several quotes from Mr Trump’s statements on Pakistan — from 2012 to 2017 — and leads the readers to his Aug 21 speech in which he unveiled a new American strategy for Afghanistan. “We have been paying Pakistan billions and billions of dollars at the same time they are housing the very terrorists that we are fighting. But that will have to change, and that will change immediately,” Mr Trump declared in that speech. The author says that this speech was unsettling for Pakistanis who felt that the US intended to change its approach toward Pakistan.
The author says that while the statement was specific to Afghanistan, Pakistanis feared that the president’s words could apply to their own country as well. Mr Hathaway notes that soon after the unveiling of the new Afghan policy, US Vice President Mike Pence wrote a piece in USA Today, declaring that the US has put Pakistan “on notice”. The author shows how Pakistanis found two other aspects of the new Trump policy especially alarming. One was the absence of any serious discussion of a negotiated end to the war in Afghanistan. “Other than a token reference to a political settlement, Mr Trump was virtually silent on what appeared to Pakistanis the only way for Afghanistan to move beyond perpetual turmoil,” he notes. “Even worse from Pakistan’s perspective, Mr Trump spoke of further developing the USIndia ‘strategic partnership’,” he adds, noting that one component of this was for India to assume a larger role in Afghanistan, especially in the areas of economic assistance and development. Mr Hathaway points out that “keeping Indian influence in Afghanistan to a bare minimum had been one of the touchstones of Pakistani strategy since signing up with the Americans in the days after 9/11” and Mr Trump’s new policy, it appeared, “could not have struck Pakistan’s vital interests more directly”. He notes how Islamabad lost no time in pushing back, reminding Americans that they “should not make Pakistan a scapegoat for their failure in Afghanistan”.
Commenting on the limitations of the US pressure on Pakistan, the book uses a quote from a Pakistani commentator, Nadia Naviwala, who argues that “a few hundred million dollars is not much of a stick,” especially when compared with Pakistan-China relationship, which is now worth about $110 billion. Mr Hathaway also advises the Trump administration not to overestimate the value of its favour or the attraction of its carrots. The author argues that a country attempting leverage must minimise its dependence upon the target country, mark its priorities and also keep itself abreast of internal developments in the target country. He also advises the Trump administration to: “Negotiate from a position of strength, and don’t take military force off the table. Do not be afraid to walk away from negotiations; the other party probably needs a bargain more than you do”. Source: Dawn.com
The letter also suggests that Director General (DG) of Health Dr Asad Hafeez be nominated as the contact point between the ministry and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Pledge to expand healthcare support comes days after Trump administration suspends security aid An NHS official told Dawn that the foundation was expected to increase their assistance, not only for the polio eradication programme, but also in other sectors. “Mr Gates has nominated his technical team and it would hopefully meet the representatives of the ministry soon to finalise support in different sectors,” he said. The official said the foundation had so far given Rs72 billion to Pakistan and it was expected that the amount of aid would increase in the future.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provides technical and financial resources to accelerate specific vaccination campaigns, routine immunisation and raising awareness. Although its sole focus in the past was supporting polio eradication campaigns, the latest communication indicates that the foundation may expand its assistance to other realms of the healthcare sector. Last week, the Trump administration announced it was suspending security assistance to Pakistan until Islamabad proved its commitment to fight all terrorist groups operating in the region. US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert had said the cut-off was not permanent and only affects military assistance. Funds will be allocated now for a particular purpose and will be released only after the
target is achieved. The Trump administration had already suspended $225 million worth of security assistance from the Foreign Military Financing fund, which is used to provide military equipment and training to a friendly country. In his first tweet of the new year, President Trump had accused Pakistan of taking billions of dollars in aid and in return, giving “nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools”. Pakistan can’t be forced to compromise on national interests: US historian
By: Anwar Iqbal ASHINGTON: akistan cannot be bludgeoned into taking steps it believes dangerous to its security, even if it means losing the US aid, argues a new book on Pakistan-US relations. The book — The Leverage Paradox: Pakistan and the United States — by Robert Hathaway, a prominent US scholar of South Asian affairs, traces the history of bilateral relations from the early 1950s to the Trump era, concluding that both nations benefited from this relationship. “There is little in the historical record to support the contention that Pakistan can be bludgeoned into taking steps it believes dangerous to its security. To the contrary, repeated US attempts to condition its aid to Pakistani behaviour failed to induce the better behaviour Washington had hoped for,” Mr Hathaway writes. He demonstrates how efforts to coerce Pakistan merely reinforced Islamabad’s belief that its “putative friend sought only to advance a US agenda at odds with Pakistan’s security”. The book argues that Pakistan has always viewed the benefits that flow from American favour as “prizes worth working to acquire, but not at any price”. Book traces history of Islamabad-Washington ties from early 1950s to Trump era Washington’s inability to recognise this reality, “repeatedly led US decision-makers to overestimate the leverage their power gave
I
them,” the author warns. Rejecting the argument that Pakistan has been a passive victim or target of American initiatives, Mr Hathaway argues that Islamabad has been “a full partner in a diplomatic two-step” that has reflected Pakistan’s as well as American policy goals. “Generally, Pakistan played its hand well to blunt the force of American power,” he adds. The book shows how in dealing with the Americans over the decades, Pakistan has held three hugely valuable assets: it occupied strategic geography, possessed considerable strength in its own right and was able to capitalise on the needs of the stronger to further its own ends.

Bill Gates announces aid bump for Pakistan
By:Ikram Junaidi SLAMABAD: Days after the Trump administration announced it was suspending security assistance to the country, a billionaire philanthropist has committed that his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will increase financial aid for Pakistan. In a letter to Minister for National Health Services (NHS) Saira Afzal Tarar – a copy of which is available with Dawn – Mr Gates praised the government’s commitment to the eradication of polio. The Microsoft founder also acknowledges the receipt of certain concept notes regarding innovations in the health sector, especially with regards to “strengthening mother and child care and reproductive health”, which he said were being analysed by a team of experts.

Inzamam ready to take responsibility for Pakistan’s debacle in New Zealand
Pakistan national team chief selector Inzamamul Haq has said that he is ready to take full responsibility for Sarfraz Ahmed and co’s dismal performance on their limited-overs tour of New Zealand. Kane Williamson-led New Zealand gained an unassailable 3-0 lead in the fivematch ODI series on Saturday after humiliating Pakistan with a 183-run defeat, as the Men in Green succumbed to their third lowest total of 74 in the 50-over format while chasing 257.
Inzamam, while addressing media on Sunday during the National One-Day Departmental Cup, said Pakistan need to find strength from the bench to hit back in the series. “The players on the bench are there to be used as replacement if the mainstays are not performing,” he said. “The time has come that Pakistan try players from the bench.” When asked to comment on the batting performance, Inzamam said: “The way we have lost wickets in all the
matches is not acceptable. If it had happened in a single match then we could’ve accepted it, but they did not put up a good show in all three encounters.” The 47-year-old added that the team needed to move forward after the Champions Trophy victory but they are at a standstill at the moment. “This is nearly the same team that won the Champions Trophy and since then our performances should have become better, however we see that the team hasn’t improved,” he said. Inzamam continued saying winning and losing in part of the game but he expected a better fight from the team “I don’t care if they win or lose, but they need to perform better than this,” he said. However, he was optimistic that they will find solutions to the problems Pakistan are facing on the tour. “There are some reasons behind these losses, but disturbing the team right now, in the middle of the series is not right. I am as worried about Pakistan’s performance as anyone else in the country, and when the team returns we will sit together with the captain, the coach and the management and talk about what happened and what can be done about, like we always do after every bad and good series.” On a concluding note, Inzamam said if Pakistan is not
Fifa has explained why Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey was banned for life, saying he tried “to make certain bets successful” in a World Cup qualifier. Lamptey aroused suspicion during South Africa’s 2-1 win over Senegal in 2016, a qualifying match for Russia 2018. “He [took] intentional decisions with the sole purpose of facilitating a minimum number of goals to make certain bets successful,” Fifa said. Fifa believes the bets related to the game featuring at least two goals. Football’s world governing body has never given extensive details of the case before, but said it had decided to do so now because of “its complex nature and various misconceptions”. The game in Polokwane, South Africa, featured a contentious penalty converted by the home side after 43 minutes, when a Senegalese defender was
adjudged to have handled the ball, despite replays showing it had hit Kalidou Koulibaly’s knee. Fifa also concluded that Lamptey was at fault for South Africa’s second goal just two minutes later, stating that the Ghanaian “clearly took two wrong decisions, which led to two goals being scored by South Africa”. The Zurich-based organisation added in a statement: “Suspicious betting activities reached their climax precisely when Lamptey took the incorrect refereeing decision between the 40th minute and the end of the first half.” Fifa said it was alerted to possible match manipulation by five different betting monitoring companies who “independently and simultaneously reported” that irregular betting activities had taken place. “All five betting operators deemed the betting activities witnessed during the
match to be highly irregular and indicative of match manipulation,” Fifa affirmed. No details were given of who may have placed the bets. Neither South Africa nor Senegal were found to have been involved in the “match manipulation”. In September, Fifa took the unusual step of ordering the game - which was Senegal’s first competitive defeat in 22 months at the time - to be replayed. Two months later, the West Africans won the replay 2-0 and so qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years. Lamptey appealed against his ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which ruled that Fifa’s sanction was appropriate. Source: BBC
able to change their fortunes in the ongoing series, he is ready to take all the responsibility. “Conditions are different in New Zealand and I agree we should do more overseas tours, but we cannot solely blame the conditions,” he explained. “Team has been making mistakes that could’ve been avoided. We still have five matches (two ODIs and three T20Is) left and we are hopeful that the team will perform better, and if it doesn’t, I’m ready to take all the responsibility.” Source: Express Tribune

An iconic soldier who will be remembered for his historic contributions for laying foundations of a strong Pakistan Air Force. May Allah bless his soul. Amen.” PTI Chairman Imran Khan also shared a message of condolence on Twitter: “Saddened to learn of Air Chief Marshal Asghar Khan’s death early this morning. By:Naveed Siddiqui Dawn.com | ir Marshal retired Asghar Khan, the first native commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), passed away at the age of 96 on Friday morning in Islamabad, a spokesperson of the PAF said in a statement. Khan, who became the youngest head of PAF at the age of 35, passed away after a long illness. His funeral prayers will be offered on Saturday in Abbottabad. “Air Marshal Asghar Khan headed the PAF diligently and with courage. With his leadership capabilities, he played a vital role in transforming the PAF into a modern air force,” Air Marshal Sohail Khan was quoted as saying in PAF’s press release.“Air Marshal Khan had a good character, great commitment and professional capability,” he added. He servred as Commander in Chief PAF (July 1957- July 1965). Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa paid tribute to the late fighter in a message posted on Twitter by military spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, calling him “iconic”. “COAS expresses his grief on demise of
party. In 2012, the party was merged with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). Renowned columnist Ardeshir Cowasjee, in an article published in July 2002, wrote of Khan’s time as a politician: “As an old-time officer and a gentleman to his fingertips, as an honest man of moderate means, and as a man who genuinely wished to do good by the poverty-stricken, uneducated of this country, there was no way, no way at all, that Air Marshal Asghar Khan could succeed as a politician of Pakistan, given the environment, the atmosphere that prevails and the mindset of the majority.”
A PAF veteran-turned-politician
Khan, a former politician and a World War II veteran fighter pilot, was born in Jammu and Kashmir in 1921. He originally served as an officer in the British Indian Army. In March 2017, the PAF Academy in Risalpur was named after Khan as a tribute to the veteran. In the era of Field Marshal Ayub Khan, the former head of the PAF spearheaded a movement with the intent to have Zulfikar Ali Bhutto released from jail. He also served as the president of Pakistan International Airlines. In 1970, Khan founed Tehreek-i-Istaqlal, a secular political
Asghar Khan case
In 1996, Air Marshal Khan had filed a human rights petition in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, accusing the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency of doling out money to a group of politicians in the 1990s. The case was initiated by the air marshal after Benazir Bhutto’s interior minister, retired general Naseerullah Babar, had disclosed in the National Assembly in 1994 how the ISI had disbursed funds to purchase the loyalty
of politicians and public figures so as to manipulate the 1990 elections, form the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), and bring about the defeat of the PPP. 16 years after the petition was filed, the Supreme Court in its judgement — penned by then Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry — ruled that the 1990 general elections had been polluted by dishing out Rs140 million to a particular group of politicians only to deprive the people of being represented by their chosen representatives. The court had, however, thrown the ball back to the then PPP government by directing it to take necessary action under the Constitution and law against former army chief retired Gen Aslam Beg and former director general of Inter-Services Intelligence retired Lt Gen Asad Durrani for their role in facilitating the group of politicians and political parties to ensure their success against their rivals in the 1990 elections. In May 2017, PTI announced its decision tofile in the Supreme Court a petition seeking implementation of the already decided and famous case.
