Muslims and Their Media in Canada
A
mong other things, it’s usually noticed that some groups do have a dirty habit of conveniently using the main stream media to promote a negative image of ‘Islam and its followers’ despite the freedom of religion in Canada. According to Malcolm X, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” In fact, the media does have the capability to generate public opinion as intended to satisfy the vested interests. But, the problem is the ‘unfriendly attitude’ of the main stream media towards the Muslim community. Also, the competition among the media businesses is in a desperate need of giving the truthful information by being objective and balanced in reporting. On the other hand, biased journalism stemming from the main stream (non Muslim) media is too injurious to maintain the required balance, as it does nothing but poison the raw minds of the non Muslims in general against the Muslims in particular. Unfortunately in some cases, the main stream media appears to be biased towards Muslim when giving misjudgment without in-depth knowledge about the practicality of Islam. Therefore, an inadequate presence of Muslim media adds to fuel further desperation for the Muslims; the presence of mischievous elements in the media threatens the formation of logical public opinion. Some unqualified media persons are more dangerous when attempting to represent the Muslims because of their ignorance, discriminatory attitude or their little knowledge about Islam. They are accused of misinterpreting Islamic teachings for their failure to understand the proper context. Beyond doubt, the media through radio, television, newspaper or internet has the capacity of connecting and bridging communities. Specifically, the internet is a gold mine of accessibility enriching the minds of the users positively or negatively – all depending on what you really look for through face book, twitter, blogs, emails, and the list goes on and on. Several communities of different ethnicities have their own media to safeguard their interests.
Similarly, the Muslims are looking for a decent way out of the ongoing frustrating situation. They are becoming active more than ever and getting closer to helping the main stream media. Fortunately, the Muslim media of today has genuine encouragement to become more and more assertive with an improved degree of confidence. In other words they are more involved and getting closer to be competitive even in the commercially focused media market. Better late than never, the Muslims are comfortable to troubleshoot the negative status quo through their own electronic and print media. They are catching up gradually and hopefully would be able to free the Canadian audience of Islamophobia. Misreporting, exaggerating or ignoring coverage for the Muslims did lead to the formation of such independent voice of Muslim community through their own print and electronic media throughout Canada. As the Muslims are legally entitled to proceed in an organized manner to protect their faith, their media too is equally entitled to publish literature to give the true picture to the general public regardless of ethnicity, coluor or creed. Thank God, a good bi-weekly namely “The Miracle News” is published in Surrey, British Columbia, it serves the local population through its unbiased reporting which is available to consumers and the business community. The fact is media is always bound by a code of ethics to continue as competitive and credible under all circumstances. A successful journalism has to be conscientious, because presenting the distorted facts is unethical and unlawful. In addition to the print media, a daily Muslim presence in the broadcast media and the internet would correct the anti Islam feelings among the non Muslim Canadians. Once Muslim media is in full force on daily basis, the Muslim youth would definitely be encouraged to benefit, preserve and strengthen their Islamic identity. The good news is several media people of integrity understand the essence of journalism. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) publishes “Islamic Horizons,” Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) publishes “The Message” and there are many other publications by different mosques. Also, there are Monthly, Bi Weekly or Weekly News Papers
and several other publications by Muslim Students’ Associations. Since, the mainstream media has been unable to address the issues of different communities equally; therefore, a daily basis English Medium Muslim TV, radio including all other publications would only enable all communities to understand what Islam really is! The Muslim community of Canada is fully entitled to enjoy equality and justice when it comes to their unattended or mishandled issues. And, the Canadian non-Muslim community deserves to find out more to reestablish their view point of the great religion of Islam. We can’t tolerate a biased media which is also focused only on commercialization, as it becomes irritating for intelligent audience. Moreover, utilizing Muslim friendly apparatus, pro-Islamic media advocates may go ahead with repairing the tarnished image of Islam. Regularly airing of the constructive interfaith dialogues can be further fruitful. At least, the Muslim media should go beyond commercialism and give a deep thought about nation building as well. However, the youths of both genders must participate sincerely to promote Muslim businesses through advertising. They should come forward as volunteers to address social issues through writing articles in the local Muslim News papers. Surely, they would be contributing for the noble cause through their efforts, so that the Muslim population is facilitated to merge with other Canadian communities with ease and pride. The Muslims deserve to be accepted as politicians, social workers, economists, educationists but at par with all other Canadians. The Muslim business people must actively engage in using the Muslim newspapers for promoting their business through their commercial Ads. Truth is Muslim media with integrity and full Islamic knowledge is better positioned to publish/broadcast for the benefit of all Canadians. Nevertheless, presenting true image of Islam as a religion of peace, tolerance and justice remains a challenge for Muslim media indeed. The bottom line is Muslim media should continue to focus on achieving the goal of nation building based on balanced truthful journalism on merit. How can a person disqualified to be MNA become party head,’ Supreme Court asks
The Supreme Court wondered on Wednesday whether a person ineligible to become a member of the National Assembly could be chosen to head a political party. A threemember bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar
was hearing a set of petitions challenging the Elections Act 2017, filed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the Pakistan Peoples Party and 10 others.”Can a thief or member of a drug mafia [also] become the head of a party?” the bench asked, as it deliberated a number of points regarding the eligibility of a person to hold a party’s top office. Justice Ijazul Ahsan wondered how a person disqualified by the court over not being sadiq (truthful) and ameen (righteous) and who could not be elected as a member of parliament become a party’s head. But Advocate Salman Akram Raja, who was representing the PML-N, argued that while a person disqualified under Article 62(1)(f) could not be elected to the parliament, the Constitution of the country imposes no bar on such a person to lead a party.”Do all the basic rights of a disqualified person as a human end with a disqualification?” Raja asked. He asked whether such a person also loses the right to organise and the right to freedom of expression. Source:Dawnnews.com
Senate up in arms over Pakistan’s being put on 604.505.5452 terror financing list
The Upper House of Parliament on Wednesday warned against Pakistan being put on the watchlist as a country deemed non-compliant with terror financing regulations of the UN and called for sincerity of purpose in matching the promises with the ground reality.Senator Farhatullah Babar gave these warning in Senate while speaking over a matter of public importance. He said that the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) will meet in Paris early next week
that would consider Pakistan’s compliance status with international regulations to choke financing infrastructure of terror organizations. In addition, it would also consider a motion to place Pakistan on the terror financing watchlist already moved by the US and some other European countries, he maintained. Expressing skepticism, the PPP senator said that four days ago the president of Pakistan had promulgated an ordinance amending the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 so as to bring individuals and organisations listed by the UN Security Council in its ambit. It was followed by cabinet approval to the new Anti-Terrorism (Freezing and Seizure) Rules 2018, he said. Though these were positive moves, he said, however the fact that the ordinance had not been brought before the parliament as required under the constitution and the law has raised some serious doubts about the intent of the move. Babar said that in the past also, the governments had been making promises but never followed up on them prompting allegations of huge gap between pledges made and the ground reality. “We must be sincere in honouring the pledges we made. We must realize that situation has changed now and it is no longer possible to sidestep delivering on promises,” he said. Source:Dawnnews.com

Hafiz Saeed’s charities in firing line
sets of the charities, an official said on Wednesday. The action comes days before a meeting by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global money laundering watchdog, which will consider a US-sponsored motion to place Pakistan on a list of countries failing to prevent terrorism financing. The operations in Pakistan of Hafiz Saeed’s extensive network – which includes 300 seminaries and schools, hospitals, a publishing house and ambulance services – has been a particular concern of the United States. Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah said the Ministry of Interior had issued a notification against the two charities, the Jamaatud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), this week. “We have received the interior ministry directions, and according to that, Hafiz Saeed and his charities, like JuD and FIF, have been banned to operate in Pakistan,” Sanaullah said. Decision to travel to Lahore via motorway was taken at party meeting: Nisar hits back at Nawaz’s remark
. Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has hit back at the veiled suggestion by a PML-N leader that he had recommended former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to take the motorway to Lahore as part of his homecoming rally following his disqualification last year. In a statement issued through his spokesman on Wednesday, Nisar responded to a video tweeted by Maryam Nawaz a day earlier showing PMLN members demonstrating party spirit and expressing solidarity with their leader Nawaz Sharif at a meeting. In an impassioned speech addressed to the former prime minister, State Minister for In-
terior Talal Chaudhry can be heard saying in the video: “You revised your decision to take the motorway to go to Lahore. It was a turning point when you decided to take GT road for the journey.” At this, Nawaz asked: “Where are these people who suggested that we travel via the motorway?”Amidst chuckles, party members quipped that those behind the recommendation will not be found at this gathering to which Nawaz said, “If you are sitting here then please raise your hand.” Amused by the situation, Nawaz mockingly said that one person had even advised him to take a flight from Rawal-
pindi to Lahore. Before Nawaz decided to take the Grand Trunk Road for his procession towards Lahore in August 2017, media reports had claimed that Nisar wanted Nawaz to travel via the motorway and hold the rally only in Lahore. Although he was not named during the video clip, Nisar apparently took personal affront to the suggestion that he had recommended the motorway route for the rally, clarifying that Nawaz’s decision to travel to Lahore via the motorway had been taken in a meeting of senior party leadership. Metro Vancouver population sees Police to recommend indicting Netanyahu “record losses” in latest Census report on corruption, bribery charges: Israeli media Metro Vancouver’s population experienced “record losses” during the previous Census year due to residents leaving for neighbouring areas. According to Statistics Canada’s The Daily report, Vancouver saw 9,926 people leave its census metropolitan area (CMA) between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017. Meanwhile, Toronto lost 36,755 and Montreal lost 10,325 residents. Those two cities are the other two largest CMAs in the country, alongside Vancouver. The Vancouver CMA encompasses the city of Vancouver, as well as a number of adjacent census subdivisions. “The Vancouver CMA saw intraprovincial losses of 9,926 residents, mainly to the benefit of the neighbouring CMA of Abbotsford–Mission and the province’s non-CMAs,” according to the Statistics Canada report. “These migration losses were the most pronounced among persons aged 25 to 64 years and children under 18 years of age.” Even so, Vancouver still saw “sustained population growth,” due to a high rate of international migration. A total of 31,541 individuals migrated to Van-
couver from international origins during the same period. Vancouver was the third ranked in international migration growth, behind Toronto (+113,074) and Montreal (+52,158). The international migration rate was 1.2 per cent across all Canadian CMAs in 2016/2017, the highest seen in the last 15 years. It accounts for 78 per cent of total population growth in CMAs, up from 75 per cent during the previous Census year.

Notley warns of further retaliation if Ottawa doesn’t intervene in pipeline feud Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says she wants progress within days from Ottawa in resolving the B.C. pipeline dispute or her government will look at further retaliatory measures. Notley said Monday she doesn’t want to escalate the feud, but she said B.C.’s actions on the Trans Mountain pipeline are illegal and must be reversed. “We do not seek an escalation, but if B.C. continues to insist that they have rights to attack Alberta’s economy that they don’t have, we will have no choice (but) to respond,” said Notley. “It’s in British Columbia’s power to put this issue to rest.” Two weeks ago, B.C. Premier John Horgan’s government announced it was looking at restricting expanded flows of oil into the province, pending a review to make sure that such spills could be properly cleaned up. In response, Notley suspended talks with B.C. to buy $500 million worth of electricity and halted imports of B.C. wine, worth about $70 million a year. Notley said she hasn’t ruled out more extreme options, such as restricting oil sent to B.C. or refusing to transport gas from that province, but says she doesn’t want to harm Alberta’s interests in the process. In Ottawa, Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr said Monday the federal government will not entertain any attempts by B.C. to stall or stop the pipeline project. “If that is the goal of any province, we will take the necessary action to ensure that federally approved resource projects proceed.” Carr said. When asked if that includes taking B.C. to court, he said Canada has “all kinds of options” to exert its constitutional authority over interprovincial pipelines. Federal officials, ministers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have been negotiating with Alberta and B.C. for almost two weeks now. B.C. hasn’t yet enacted a ban on the $7.4-billion pipeline project, which limits the legal options for Ottawa to fight back. “All British Columbia has tangibly done at this point is signal its intention
Israel must safeguard a Jewish majority even at the expense of human rights, the country’s justice minister has said in a speech defending a bill that would legally define Israel as the “national home of the Jewish people” for the first time. Ayelet Shaked said on Monday that Israel must maintain both a Jewish majority and democracy, but stressed that keeping the state’s Jewish character may come “at the price” of human rights violations. “There is place to maintain a Jewish majority even at the price of violation of rights,” Shaked told a conference in Tel Aviv on Monday, Israeli media reported. In her speech, Shaked, a member of the far-right Jewish Home party, defended the so-called Jewish Nation-State Bill, which would constitutionally define Israel as the national home of the Jewish people for the first time. “There are places where the character of the State of Israel as a Jewish state must be maintained, and this sometimes comes at the expense of equality,” Shaked said, as reported by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper. Shaked said Israel must administer equal civil, but not national, rights. “Israel is a Jewish state. It isn’t a state of all its nations. That is, equal rights to all citizens but not equal national rights,” she said. The contentious Nation-State Bill, which still needs to be approved by Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, passed a preliminary reading last May. It is expected to be brought to a first reading later this year. The bill states that “the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish peo-
ple”. It also demotes Arabic from an official language to a language with “special status”, even though it is the mother tongue of approximately 1.7 million Palestinian citizens of the state. Adalah, a legal centre for Palestinian citizens of Israel, said that, because the bill would become a Basic Law in Israel, i.e. constitutionally binding, “its enactment could be used to justify through law widespread discrimination” against Israel’s nonJewish citizens. For that reason, it is “highly dangerous”, the group said. The bill would also force all citizens of the state, regardless of their religion, to comply with Jewish civil law, often without legal precedent, explained Mossawa, an advocacy centre for Palestinian citizens of Israel, in a position paper. The legislation “clearly denigrates the non-Jewish, Palestinian Arab minority to the status of second-class citizens”, Mossawa concluded. Source: Al-Jazeera
Tillerson urges coalition unity in fight against ISIL
to consult with the people of its province,” said Carr. Shannon Stubbs, federal Conservative natural resources critic, is not as convinced as Notley that Ottawa is doing everything it can to get the pipeline built. She introduced an opposition motion in the House of Commons on Monday calling on the federal government to make public no later than Feb. 15, its specific plan to get the pipeline built. Stubbs said the Liberals keep saying the same thing over and over, that they approved the pipeline and that it will get built, but they are not putting any specifics on the table about how that will happen. She said it’s incumbent on them to decide what those moves are, but said they should include defining “unnecessary delays” and what will be done to get B.C. to remove the threat to ban increased oil flows. Carr called the Conservative motion an attempt to manufacture a crisis and stoke regional tensions. Construction began on the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby, in September 2017 but construction on the pipeline itself is still awaiting final permits and route approvals. Kinder Morgan recently said it expects the operational date for the pipeline is now a year later than expected, in December 2020. Source: Vancouver Sun
The fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group is far from over, the US secretary of state has said, urging unity among Arab countries in the Gulf for the sake of regional stability. Rex Tillerson says the rift between Qatar and its former allies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) - namely Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, as well as Egypt is counterproductive to efforts to root out the group. The countries imposed a blockade on Qatar last June. “The end of major combat operations does not mean we have achieved the enduring defeat of ISIS,” Tillerson said during a meeting on Tuesday in Kuwait City. He said US priorities are to prevent ISIS from establishing a so-called caliphate in Iraqand Syria, recruiting new members and being able to train for future attacks. “Without continued attention and support from coalition members, we risk the return of extremist groups like ISIS in liberated areas of Iraq and Syria and their spread to new locations,” he said. The US also pledged $200m to support stabilisation efforts in Syria, Tillerson announced. Ibrahim Fraihat, professor of conflict resolution at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in Qatar, said Tillerson was “sending a message that the two tracks cannot be disconnected: that the war on terrorism can be affected by instability in the Gulf”. Tillerson’s comments came during a three-day donor conference in Kuwait to support reconstruction and stabilisation efforts in Iraq. Experts estimate $88bn
is needed to fund the reconstruction efforts, and, of that, $22bn is urgently needed to begin the rebuilding process, said Fraihat. Large parts of Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, which was long held by ISIL fighters, are still in ruins more than six months after it was retaken by the Iraqi government. “The US role is always key in any process, especially in Iraq. This whole thing started back in 2003 with the American invasion of Iraq and the regime change the US caused there,” Fraihat told Al Jazeera. So far, the groups leading the reconstruction process in Iraq have been the European Union, World Bank, UN, Kuwait and the Iraqi government itself, he said. “The US should be taking a leading role in this, whether it’s ... in terms of financing, or in terms of providing the support for this reconstruction process.”

One injured in shooting outside US NSA headquarters
A shooting erupted on Wednesday outside the headquarters of the National Security Agency (NSA), a secret intelligence agency responsible for global US electronic eavesdropping in the suburbs of Washington, the White House confirmed. At least one person has been injured in the shooting, officials said. “We can confirm there has been one person injured and we don’t know how the injuries occurred,” an NSA spokesman told AFP. The local ABC affiliate put the number of injured at three and said a suspect was arrested. The NBC News aired aerial images of what appeared to be police surrounding a man on the ground in handcuffs outside the NSA facility in Fort Meade, Maryland. A black SUV appeared to have crashed into a concrete barrier surrounding the site, and bullet holes were visible in the vehicle’s front windows. The NSA said the situation was under control, advising motorists that a highway leading to the complex was closed in both direction “due to a police investigation.”“The president has been briefed on the shooting at Fort Meade,” the White House said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected.“A law enforcement source said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’s Baltimore office was handling the investigation but it was “too soon to tell” whether it was an attack. They are “still try-
ing to ascertain the facts,” the source said. Known as the “Puzzle Palace,” the NSA is the nerve centre for the US electronic espionage as well as the main protector of US communications and information systems from cyber attack. The agency was thrust into the spotlight in 2013 when former contractor Edward Snowden leaked details of its global surveillance programs, including its collection of data on Americans. Snowden has been charged with violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property. He now lives in exile in Russia. The NSA was the scene of a similar incident in March 2015 when police fired on an SUV, killing the driver and wounding a passenger after they failed to obey orders to stop at its heavily guarded entrance. In that incident, the two men in the Ford SUV were dressed in women’s clothes “but not in an attempt to disguise themselves from authorities,” an FBI spokeswoman said at the time. Source:Dawnnews.com
China, India battle for stake in Bangladesh stock exchange
India and China have launched rival bids for a large stake in Bangladesh’s stock exchange, officials said on Wednesday, as the Asian powers jostle for strategic influence in the region.Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) chief executive Majedur Rahman confirmed India’s National Stock Exchange had offered 15 taka ($0.18) per share during a tender process this month for a 25 per cent stake in the bourse’s 1.8 billion shares. China’s Shanghai and Shenzen stock exchanges made a joint higher bid of 22 taka ($0.26) per share, or $122 million, and “also offered technical support worth nearly $37 million”, Rahman told AFP. A bourse official said the Chinese bid was approved by the board but it was rebuffed by Bangladesh’s financial regulators, sparking allegations of political meddling. “The BSEC (Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission) declined to give the order to go ahead,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “It also asked the DSE to further scrutinise the proposals.”The BSEC declined to comment on whether the Chinese offer had been formally rejected. But the regulator’s execu-
tive director Saifur Rahman told AFP it could “always override the exchange’s decisions”.“No final conclusion has been drawn yet. The auction process is still at an early stage,” he said. Local press has blamed political interference for the alleged favouritism toward India, despite the offer from the Mumbai-based stock exchange falling short of China’s more lucrative bid by nearly 50pc. The competing bids have exposed tensions in Bangladesh as it juggles growing interest from China against longstanding ties with India, its large and influential neighbour. New Delhi threw its weight behind the 2014 elections that returned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to power, despite allegations from the opposition that the vote was rigged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has made big investments in Bangladesh and Indian companies have won lucrative multi-billion contracts in key sectors in recent years. But increasingly it must counter China, which has courted India’s arch-rival Pakistan and strategic Indian Ocean nations including Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Xi Jinping became the first Chinese president to visit Bangladesh in more than three decades when he touched down in Dhaka in October 2016 to sign deals worth more than $20 billion. But there have been setbacks, with Bangladesh last month blacklisting a top Chinese construction firm for allegedly trying to bribe a senior government official. Source:Dawnnews.com
US denies alleged West Bank settlement annexation plan
The US has dismissed reported discussions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Washington officials over plans to annex Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. “Reports that the United States discussed with Israel an annexation plan for the West Bank are false,” said White House spokesman Josh Raffel, late on Monday. “The United States and Israel have never discussed such a proposal.” Raffel added the “focus remains squarely” on US President Donald Trump’s “Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative”. The Israeli prime minister was quoted as telling a meeting of Likud legislators: “On the subject of applying sovereignty, I can say that I have been talking to the Americans about it for some time.” Netanyahu was referring to applying Israeli law to the settlements, which are currently under the jurisdiction of Israel’s military. Netanyahu’s office later sought to clarify what was discussed, saying in a statement the prime minister “updated the Americans on the initiatives being raised in the Knesset”. On Sunday, Netanyahu blocked a bill to annex settlements that was proposed by right-wing Likud lawmakers. “The Americans expressed their unequivocal position that they are committed to advancing Presi-
dent Trump’s peace plan,” Netanyahu’s office said. Responding to Netanyahu’s reported comments, a senior Palestinian official said the statements confirmed “Israel’s commitment to apartheid”. Saeb Erekat of the Palestine Liberation Organisation said on Monday any unilateral moves to annex Palestinian land would violate their right to self-determination and independence, while confirming “US complicity with Israeli colonial plans”. “This is a confirmation that final status issues are being unilaterally decided upon by Israel in coordination with the US administration,” Erekat said in a statement. Israel occupied the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem in 1967. Today, between 600,000 and 750,000 Israeli settlers live in more than 200 Jewish-only settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Source: Al-Jazeera

We will continue to use every means at Canada’s disposal to seek further information.” Seyed-Emami was the managing director of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, an organization aimed at protecting Iran’s rare animals, and a UStrained scholar in sociology. He was arrested the same day as at least nine other staff members at his organization, according to the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), a non-profit group based in New York. Iran’s judiciary said Seyed-Emami was a defendant in a spying case and had committed suicide because of the weight of evidence against him, an Iranian news agency reported on Sunday. He died in Tehran’s Evin prison, his son said. Canada does not have an embassy in Iran. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been tense since an Iranian-Canadian photographer, Zahra Kazemi, was beaten to death in prison in 2003 after she was detained while taking pictures. Dozens of dual nationals are in jail in Iran, mostly on spying charges.
OTTAWA: The Canadian government said on Tuesday it was “seriously concerned” with the circumstances surrounding the death of an Iranian-Canadian dual citizen in a Tehran prison, and that it was pressing Iran to provide details on what happened. Kavous Seyed-Emami, an environmental activist and sociology professor, was arrested on Jan. 24 and died in prison, his son wrote on Twitter last week. Iran’s judiciary said on Sunday that SeyedEmami, 63, had committed suicide. “We are seriously concerned by the situation surrounding the detention and death of Mr. SeyedEmami,” Canada’s foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, said in a statement. “We expect the Government of Iran to provide in- Source: Al-Jazeera

Pipelines, cannabis and ICBC: Q&A with BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson Business In Vancouver / Richmond News The newly minted leader of the opposition sits down with Business in Vancouver to discuss the province’s most pressing issues Following Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Andrew Wilkinson’s win in the BC Liberal leadership race earlier this month, the new leader of the opposition joined Business in Vancouver on Roundhouse Radio 98.3 to share his thoughts on the province’s tense relationship with Alberta, Victoria’s strategy on recreational cannabis and the future of ICBC. This interview has been edited and condensed. How the B.C.-Alberta spat over pipelines and wine is hitting the economy? A: This is an embarrassment. I mean, this is the sort of thing that should not happen. It shows a lack of maturity amongst two premiers.… Somehow the [John] Horgan NDP government has decided that they don’t like the rule of law in Canada so they’re just going to pick a fight with Alberta. And of course Alberta, whether advisedly or not, has decided to penalize the British Columbia wine industry. So what do the people of British Columbia get out of this? They get investor uncertainty, they get complete disregard for the rule of law, they get job loss in the Okanagan, they get antagonized Alberta civilians who would otherwise come and spend on tourism in British Columbia. This is a lose-lose proposition for the people of British Columbia. On the BC Liquor Distribution Branch’s
central role in the recreational cannabis industry A: This idea in British Columbia that every piece of liquid alcohol has to go through the hands of government employees at the Liquor Distribution Branch is a bit arcane. And now they want to expand it into the future for another product, marijuana. Anybody’s who’s in the logistics and distribution business says, “Well, you might have done that in the Prohibition era as a way to make sure you’re collecting taxes and that bad people aren’t dealing with contraband.” But in the marijuana business there’s already a very well-established black market that has been there for 50 years. And if they create these unionized jobs for people to handle marijuana and shuffle it around and take their own time distributing it, all that does is encourage continuation of the black market. It drives up the cost base of the newly lawful marijuana business and makes it less likely that it would get any revenue off it because you’ve got to pay for this distribution system first, and more likely that organized crime will continue to be involved in the black market for marijuana. On the fate of Vancouver’s dispensaries after recreational cannabis is legalized? A: I’m hopeful that this completely renegade business that’s making it all out to be fun and games, and where we’re not sure who’s actually profiting from it, will fizzle out. There may be some of them that are more credible that will be able to license
themselves and sell and become established within the framework of private operators within a tightly regulated environment. That remains to be seen. How to fix ICBC? A: It’s a 44-year-old state-run monopoly that was created by the NDP, and in my view it’s probably outlived its usefulness. It needs a root-and-branch overhaul to make sure that it’s serving the purpose that it needs to, which is to provide affordable motor insurance to British Columbians and appropriate claims compensation to accident victims.… There’s talk about, “Do you want to privatize ICBC?” Well, ICBC is a money-losing insurance company that is essentially worthless. So the idea you’re going to sell it to somebody is probably an illusion. On whether he would align with BC Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver if the current government falls over the pursuit of liquefied natural gas? A: That remains to be seen because the Green party on one hand has tried to portray itself as independent, and thoughtful and evidence-based, as they keep saying. And on the other hand they vote faithfully, loyally and reliably with the NDP on every single thing that the NDP does. On finding a balance between taxis and ride-hailing services A: We have to make sure that whoever is carrying passengers in British Columbia is appropriately licensed, appropriately trained and skilled, and appropriately in-
sured. And the actual dispatch system – whether they’re using they’re own app or eCab or the Yellow or Black Top one or Lyft – those are going to change over time. That’s the nature of the technology industry. I’m more concerned about the safety of British Columbians and making sure the insurance is in place. How he would tackle the housing affordability crisis? A: We need to answer this as a society and arrange for an appropriate growth in the housing supply. That means getting the municipal permitting sorted out. I’ve talked about tax incentives for construction of residential rental housing.… There isn’t enough rental housing out there. The market is way too tight. So we need to make sure there’s an expanded supply of housing to keep up with all of the tens of thousands of people that are moving here every year. http://www.richmond-news.com/
David Eby calls on Andrew Wilkinson to release suppressed 2014 ICBC report
David Eby is calling on B.C. Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson to release the original 2014 ICBC report his government chose to hide from the public. On January 23rd, the Vancouver Sun revealed that the B.C. Liberals received a report in 2014 warning of the impending crisis at ICBC. Instead of acting on the recommendations, the former B.C. Liberal government deleted them before making the report public.“I know this is Andrew Wilkinson’s first Question
Period in his new job today, but I’d like to ask him if he has yet directed his friend Mr. de Jong to release the ICBC report redacted by the B.C. Liberal government,” said Eby. “The decision to hide the report and not act has cost British Columbians more than a billion dollars, and it’s time for Andrew Wilkinson and the B.C. Liberals to be accountable for that.”On January 31st, Eby wrote to Mike de Jong requesting that he exercise his power as former Finance Min-
ister to waive cabinet privilege so the report can be released to the public. De Jong has so far refused. Eby is calling on Wilkinson to show leadership by instructing de Jong to release it.“British Columbians deserve to know exactly what the B.C. Liberal government knew and when they knew it,” said Eby. “If Andrew Wilkinson wants to show that the B.C. Liberals have learned anything, he should tell Mr. de Jong to the release the report immediately.” Meagan Blaquiere

Fog Horn
(1853) Invented by Robert Foulis(1796-1866)
Robert Foulis, a transplanted Scot intending to travel to Ohio, was diverted to the Canadian Maritime provinces by poor weather in 1818, prompting him to settle first in Halifax and then in Saint John. Although Foulis invented the steam fog-horn in 1853, said to be one of the most important navigational aids ever invented, unfortunately for Foulis and his heirs (a warning to all neo phyte inventors!), he failed to patent his invention, and an American later did so, profiting from Foulis’ neglect.

INVENTIONS
Top Canadian Inventions Series
Egg Carton
(1918) Invented by Joseph Coyle (1871-1972) B.C. inventor created better way to carry eggs When newspaper publisher Joseph Coyle overheard the dispute between the hotelier and the deliveryman, he knew there had to be a simple solution. The hotelier had grown frustrated because eggs delivered from a local farm were often broken. Putting all one’s eggs in a basket, although a risky proposition, was standard practice in 1911. How then, Mr. Coyle wondered, could one safely move eggs from Point A to Point B? About 40 years of age at the time, and publisher of the Interior News, a publication in British Columbia’s Bulkley Valley, Mr. Coyle was nothing if not resourceful. His list of inventions would ultimately include a pocket cigar cutter and a vehicle anti-theft device. For this predicament, he invented a product that remains largely unchanged since he dreamed it up more than a century ago – the egg carton.
Pacemaker
Snowblower
(1925) Invented by Arthur Sicard (1876-1946) Canadian inventor, Arthur Sicard invented the snowblower in 1925. The Montreal based inventor sold his first, “Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower” to the nearby town of Outremont in 1927. The First Snowblower - “Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower” The invention consisted of three sections; a four-wheel drive truck chassis and truck motor, the snow scooping section, and the snow blower with two adjustable chutes and separate motor. The snowblower allowed the driver to clear and throw snow over 90 feet away from the truck or directly into the back of the truck and it worked on hard, soft or packed snow.
Square socket Screwdriver Paint Roller
Insulin (1911) Invented by P.L. Robertson (1879-1951)
After badly cutting his hand while using a slot-headed screwdriver, Peter Lymburner Robertson invented the squareheaded screwdriver and screw in 1908. He received the Canadian patent for his invention in 1909. A person could drive a screw more quickly with this new design and the screw was self-centering so only one hand was needed. On top of that, the driver fit more tightly in the screw’s head, thereby reducing the chance of the screwdriver slipping out. The Robertson screw was a big hit! Industry loved it because it sped up production and resulted in less product damage. No one has been able to improve on this design in all the years that have followed!
(1921) Invented by Frederick Banting (18911941) and Charles Best (1899-1978)
Frederick G. Banting and John Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923 “for the discovery of insulin.” The Legacy of Insulin Banting, Macleod, and the rest of the team patented their insulin extract but gave away all their rights to the University of Toronto, which would later use the income from insulin to fund new research.
(1940) Invented by Norman Breakey (18911965) The origins of the paint roller make for a sad story. Around 1940, a Torontonian named Norman Breakey devised a time-saving painting tool that allowed anyone to produce a smooth finish. He peddled his invention to local hardware stores and painters, but neglected to patent it. The result: plenty of imitations, patents that benefitted others, and the disappearance of Mr. Breakey into the mists of time. Prior to the invention of the paint roller, house painting was a chore best left to professionals who had the time and dexterity to create a smooth finish with their brushes
To be continued in Next Edition
(1950) Invented by John “Jack” Hopps 1919 John “Jack” Hopps was born in 1919 in Winnipeg, After grad. degree in electrical eng. from the Unv of Manitoba in 1941, he was recruited to the Division of Radio and Electrical Engineering by the National Research Council, based in Ottawa. He would remain there for the duration of his career, working on a variety of innovations in the new field of biomedical engineering. As the head of the medical engineering section, he led a team in the development of devices designed to improve the quality of life for those affected by blindness and muscular disabilities, and to advance the diagnostic uses of ultrasound. He also furthered cardiovascular research by inventing machines for respiration, cathoderay displays for cardiac operating rooms, cardio scopes for postoperative monitoring, heart rate monitors for sports medicine, and, of course, the cardiac pacemaker. Invention of the pacemaker During the 1940s, Hopps studied the use of radiofrequency reheating for pasteurizing beer in Ottawa. Hopps was so dedicated to this project that he looked upon his assignment to the Banting Institute in Toronto in 1949 “as an annoying interruption to this vital task.” Little did he know that this assignment would have groundbreaking implications for the lives of so many cardiac patients around the world. Hopps and others went on to develop a series of experiments to refine this process for pacemaker-induced cardiac stimulation. With the parameters derived from these initial experiments, Hopps returned to the National Research Council in 1950 to design and build the first pacemaker prototype. Implantation of first pacemaker Hopps’ early work eventually led to the development of the implantable pacemaker. With the advent of transistor circuitry, the original vacuum tubes were replaced by transistors, which allowed the pacemaker battery to become small enough for implanting in the body. The first implantable pacemaker was developed by engineer Rune Elmqvist. It consisted of two transistors and was assembled in a mold of an empty British Kiwi shoe polish tin. On 8 October 1958, it was implanted by surgeon Ake Senning into the chest of Arne Larsson, a 43-year-old man who suffered from complete heart block and StokesAdams attacks. Larsson’s first pacemaker failed within 3 hours of implantation and the second was no longer functional after 1 week. Larsson would eventually undergo a total of 26 pacemaker replacement procedures, until his death in 2001 from unrelated causes.

Are ‘Heat-Not-Burn’ Tobacco Products Safer Than Cigarettes?
By Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer
A
new tobacco device by Philip Morris, known as IQOS, shouldn’t go to market with the claim that it reduces disease risk compared with traditional cigarettes, a panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded today (Jan. 25), according to news reports. But how exactly do these products work, and why did the FDA make this call? The IQOS is a type of “heat-notburn” tobacco product. These products could be thought of as “in the middle between [traditional] cigarettes and vaping products,” said William Shadel, associate director of the Population Health Program at Rand Corp., a nonprofit research organization. The devices use disposable tobacco “sticks” that are heated to give off an aerosol, but do not burn. Specifically, these tobacco sticks contain processed tobacco along with a few other components, including water, glycerin and cellulose fibers, according to Philip Morris. The sticks are placed into a holder, which heats the tobacco through an electronically controlled “heating blade,” the company said. The tobacco is heated up to a temperature of 662 degrees Fahrenheit (350 degrees Celsius), which is enough to create an aerosol, but not enough to burn it. (Tobacco in traditional cigarettes burns at a temperature of about 1,110 de-
grees Fahrenheit [600 degrees C], according to Philip Morris.) The product also comes with a charger to recharge the electronic holder. [10 Tips to Help You Quit Smoking] Heat-not-burn products are different from electronic cigarettes (ecigarettes), because the latter heat up and vaporize a liquid, which usually contains nicotine, Shadel said, while the former heats actual tobacco. Philip Morris claims that, because IQOS doesn’t burn the tobacco, the product releases much lower levels of the harmful chemicals typically found in tobacco smoke. The company wants to sell the product with the claim that using the products reduces the risk of tobacco-related disease, compared with using traditional cigarettes. But the FDA panel voted to reject this claim, saying that the company hadn’t provided enough evidence to show that its product lowers disease risk compared with cigarettes, according to Reuters. The panel did, however, endorse the claim that the product releases lower levels of toxic chemicals compared with traditional cigarettes. Shadel said that this conclusion “seems about right based on the evidence available so far.” In theory, heat-and-burn products could be safer because they don’t lead to the combustion of tobacco, Shadel said. But “there’s just not enough evidence that users will incur less risk” from using the products, Shadel told Live Science.
Shadel noted that most of the studies on IQOS have been conducted by Philip Morris, and much more research is needed by independent researchers who are not associated with the company to determine the safety of the product. In addition, it’s “unclear whether or not enough smokers would actually switch to products” to have a public health benefit, Shadel said. The panel’s conclusion is just a recommendation, and in the coming months the FDA will make a final decision on whether Philip Morris can sell IQOS in the United States, and what claims the company will be able to make about the device, according to Reuters. The product is already available in 29 countries, according to Philip Morris. Original article on Live Science.

Thanks Allah (swt) on Completion of Miracle’s 17th year !
O
nce again alhamdulillah, it is a great occasion in the Miracle Media Group Inc.’s history as it has completed seventeen years -a long journey that began on Feb 23rd, 2001. I want to thank the supporters and well wishers of ‘The Miracle’ for providing continuous support through advertisements of their businesses, sharing their thoughts in writing with our readers, especially Mr. Nusrat Hussain, Mr. Shams Jilani, Mr. Aslam Hayat, Mr. Azhar Syed, Maulana Abdul Lateef Naumani, Mrs. Shamim Karim, Mrs. Alam Ara, Mrs. Shabnam Khan, Dr. Huma Mir, Ms. Asma Shums, Mrs. Nafisa Siddiqi, Mr. Mohammad Ali Wahlah and many others. The Miracle team feels proud to have established and continued our tradition of special editions on occasions such as Federal, Provincial and Civic Elections, Independence Day of Pakistan, Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul Adha. In past few years, the Miracle conducted many successful Election Forums on Civic, Provincial and Federal Elections debates. Recently at 2015 Federal Elections the Miracle Media did a vital role to conduct Surrey Candidates grand debate under the banner of BC Muslim Print Media. In 2016 BC Provincial election, the Mircale media covered the, candidates nomination meetings, election campaigns, press conferences, community forums of many candidates and their profiles. We held Qirat and Hamad o Naat competitions, awards for Miracle Youth, Advertisers, Sponsors and Writers. Miracle Media also conducted three 6 hours long exciting Musical Competition programs for tributes the legendry Pakistani Singers Mehdi Hassan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Mixed Pakistani songs, these programs engaged children, youth, adults and seniors of all communities. On Feb 19, 2016 again Miracle Media arranged a 6 hours duration quality program of Miracle’s Writers and Musicians awards with Sham e Ghazal night to tribute the great legendry Pakistani singers, Mehdi Hassan and Noor Jehan at a large scale at Afghan Chopan restaurant in Surrey. The newspaper aims to provide a broad overview of the world through articles and images. Over the years, we have covered around 4500 events from all communities in efforts to keep up with our slogan, “Bringing Harmony to all the ”. We are also proud that when NonMuslims read Miracle Newspaper, they learn more about Islam as well as the local and international Muslim community. Feb 23, 2001 was a remarkable day for the BC Muslim community when
Mr.Hussain launched the first Muslim Newspaper on biweekly basis. His family’s and his day and night struggle gave a voice to the community. Mr. Nusrat Hussain, founder of Miracle, handed me over the responsibility to run this show alone from Jan 2007. Thanks Mr. Hussain! I have been since trying to nourish your baby, The Miracle, to this day, Feb 16, 2018. How successful my entire team and I have been in achieving this tasks? Well, the Miracle’s readers are the best judges. Miracle is the only one who cares and respects all community members irrespective of colour, nationality and faith. During its sevteen years of community service in journalism, the Miracle took one step ahead from our fellows in the field, from past five years we decided to give each advertisement special attention rather than printing consecutive 4-8 pages color ads and risk that readers will flip through all the ads without stopping. We have now divided each page in such a way so that the ads and articles are spread evenly on pages so our advertisers benefit from more exposure and our readers stay informed by reading articles and seeing what the businesses are offering at the same time. We also pay thanks to our Advertisers. Feel free to comment on this issue about Miracle’s Historical 17 years journey, as your concerns and suggestions are highly appreciated for improving our quality in future. At the end I will not be honest if I do not appreciate the efforts of my Miracle’s family Khadija, Misbah, Sabeeh, Shahrukh and Arslan. Keep up the good work not only for the Miracle, but for all the community. I thank everyone who took the time and sent their messages at Miracle’s17th Anniversary, including politicians, advertisers and well-wishing individuals from the community. May Allah (SWT) accept your prayers for our success and may He help us in serving the community. Jazaakumu Allahu Khairan.(Ameen) Mohammad Naseer Pirzada (Editor in-Chief)

SPORTS 23 Calgary considering possible bid for 2026 Winter Games as mayor tours Pyeongchang Jamadi ul Awaal 30, 1439 February 16, 2018
Although the 2026 Winter Games are still eight years away, the International Olympic Committee is already on the hunt for a host city and there’s talk that Calgary could be the top contender. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has been touring the Pyeongchang Olympics in South Korea this week on a fact-finding mission to determine the city’s suitability for hosting the Games. “The idea really here, that we’re here for, is not to answer the question: can we host the Games? We’ve done a ton of work and we’re very confident we can host an excellent Games, the question is: should we?” Nenshi told CTV News’ Peter Akman on Tuesday. Nenshi and the rest of the delegation have been meeting with IOC organizers in Pyeongchang to see how the Olympics operate and how any lessons learned from the current Games might apply to Calgary. It’s been 30 years since the city hosted the Winter Olympics with great success. Besides the memorable storylines, such as ski jumper Eddie the Eagle or the Jamaican bobsled team, another important legacy endures in
the city – its infrastructure. Unlike Pyeongchang, which had to build arenas, event spaces and lodgings from scratch, Calgary has an advantage when it comes to venues for the Games. The famed Saddledome arena and the Olympic Oval are just two examples of facilities used in 1988 that could be recycled in 2026. “Not everything we’ve got in Calgary is perfect for every event. We have to improvise a little bit. We have to invest in some things, but certainly we’re not talking about building a town from scratch as in Sochi,” Nenshi explained. The hope is that the city will be able to cut down on costs by using its existing infrastructure in order to justify hosting the notoriously expensive sporting event. Despite this, the price tag for hosting the 2026 Winter Games in Calgary is estimated to be approximately $4.6 billion. The IOC has altered its bidding and hosting procedures to make the Games more affordable and sustainable as an increasing number of cities lose interest. “The Games have changed, the economics have changed, but certainly the Olympic movement is in-
terested in taking costs out and making these things real,” Nenshi said. On Friday, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced that it would not bid on the 2026 Winter Games despite apparent interest from cities such as Salt Lake City, Denver and Reno. The declaration leaves Calgary as the only remaining North American contender in the IOC’s Dialogue Stage, along with cities in Japan, Switzerland, and Sweden. Susan Auch, an Olympic speed skater who won three medals over three Games, including a bronze medal in Calgary, told CTV News that she sup-
ports bringing the Games back to the city. “So many sports really made their jump because of the Olympics in Calgary. I think that it’s time to do another Games,” Auch, the current head of Speed Skating Canada, said. Nenshi, on the other hand, said the city is still weighing its options ahead of the IOC’s formal bidding process, which begins in September. “Is it right for Calgary? Is it right for Alberta? Is it right for Canada?” he said. “That’s really what we’re here to try and figure out.”

5 potential breakout stars to watch out for in PSL 2018
It’s no secret that the real motivation behind the launch of Pakistan Super League (PSL) was money. The Pakistan Cricket Board’s coffers were empty due to its inability to hold a home series in Pakistan, and the PSL was the perfect remedy. But, even if only at a superficial level, one of PSL’s side quests was to unearth new talent and/or give a change to the dead weights who would’ve otherwise been lost in PCB’s infamous talent black hole. Points in case: the tainted Sharjeel Khan’s relaunch in PSL 1, or the discovery of Shadab Khan in 2017. The likes of Rumman Raees, Mohammad Nawaz,
Sweet & Sour Chicken w/Pineapple
Mohammad Asghar and Fakhar Zaman are some more PSL products. And if the same trend holds, it’s safe to presume PSL 2018 will also contribute something to the national team’s talent pool. In Dawn.com’s opinion, these are the five primary candidates who could be the breakout stars of PSL 2018: Sahibzada Farhan

Restructure your life
Qaiser Rizwan Abbasi Have you ever heard people saying youth is the most crucial-cum-complex age in one’s life? Do you realise that you are the chief executive officer (CEO) of your life, who is bound to make all the important decisions of your life? Haven’t you noticed your parents keeping a vigilant eye on your actions and practices because you are still not an adult? Haven’t you experienced people asking you about your goals in life because you are at the crossroads in your life? Haven’t you had people telling you “Do something great that can justify your existence in this world”?Certainly, you must have heard these things countless times, especially if you are stepping into your teens or are already there. Habits play a significant role in life, especially a youngster’s life. This can either build you or destroy you. The good habits can help young people to balance out a cramped schedule and increasing responsibilities, and get over with this stage of life successfully. “ Following are few habits which are the quintessential element of their lives which make them unique and successful Taking responsibility The attribute of taking responsibility for things suggests that a person takes the responsibility of his actions, has willpower and channels his thoughts into actions. Don’t blame and defame others for their failures or mishaps. Believe that excuses and being a prisoner of the past is for weak people, thus they get through the difficult situation and they move on. Be focused and goal-oriented One should be able to imagine the end-product of his
decision. We must know that whatever decision we have taken, it would lead to what happens in our life. And a successful person is able to control his own destiny rather than be driven and remote-controlled by other people. Being positive towards others A sense of competition and an eagerness to win come naturally to humans. But the ability of positively channelling this sense of competition is what makes people successful. This means that such people not only perform well, and produce fruitful results, but also let others learn and succeed. Understand others There is a wise saying: “The greatest mistake we make in our relationships: we listen half, understand quarter, think zero and react double.” This is so true for most of us. Successful teenagers tend to listen to people carefully, understand the words and scenario before jumping to the conclusion. Build teamwork I know that 2+2=5 seems odd and unrealistic, doesn’t it? But this is what happens when you work in groups. Successful youngsters try to build their group, assign work, promote brainstorming and succeed through effective leadership qualities. They believe in collective wisdom. Keep improving your life “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving” —Albert Einstein. Successful youngsters keep on sharpening themselves while accessing new knowledge, learning different skills and making new friends. They keep a balance between four components: the body, brain, heart and soul.
Spouses being reunited more quickly in Canada
Sponsorship process improvements commitment to process 80% of spousal have led to backlog reduction and applications that were received in December 2016. shorter processing times. Mississauga, ON – Over the past year, the Government of Canada has made significant improvements to the spousal sponsorship process, making it faster and easier for Canadians and permanent residents to reunite with their spouses. In December 2016, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it would reduce the backlog of spousal applicants by 80% and shorten processing times to 12 months. It also announced improvements to the spousal sponsorship application process to make it more efficient and easier to navigate. Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the government has successfully met these commitments: •More than 80% of those who were in the global spousal sponsorship backlog on December 7, 2016, have now received final decisions for their applications. We reduced the spousal inventory from 75,000 applications to 15,000 as of December 31, 2017. •As of December 31, 2017, we met our
In addition, after introducing a new spousal sponsorship application package in December 2016, IRCC continued to respond to client and stakeholder feedback to further improve the application process, and make it simpler and easier for sponsors and applicants to understand and navigate. As a result, we made a number of improvements to the application package in June 2017. And today, we introduced further updates to the application kit and process to improve the client experience and make sure we can process applications as quickly as possible. Quote “The Government of Canada is committed to family reunification. We understand how important it is to reunite couples. It also makes for a stronger Canada. Canadians who marry someone from abroad shouldn’t have to wait for years to have them immigrate or be left with uncertainty in terms of their ability to stay.” – The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

What is a Columnist?
Columnist is someone who regularly prepares brief essays and commentaries for publication. Columnists may work for broadcast media in radio and television, but they are more commonly associated with the print media, in the form of newspapers and magazines. A columnist is a type of journalist, but he or she is not required to adhere to expected journalistic ethics of neutrality, and a column does not necessarily contain news.Columnists usually write on a regular schedule, producing material for publication on a weekly, monthly, or daily basis. They appear in the same section every time they are published, usually under the same heading, such as “News and Notes” for a columnist who provides information about community events. They may write under their own names or under a pseudonym, such as “Miss Manners” for the noted etiquette columnist otherwise known as Judith Martin. Some columnists write specifically for syndication, while others work for a particular news organization, and their columns may be reprinted by permission from the organizations they work for. Originally, columnists focused primarily on humorous pieces, which might include politi-
w riters
cal satire, jokes, or other forms of humor to lighten the news and keep readers occupied and engaged. Over time, columnists began to expand their offerings, and they can be found writing on food, fashion, gossip, and lighthearted community news. A columnist may work as a critic, writing a regular column on a topic of interest such as film or art. Some columnists use letters from readers as a core part of their column. Advice columnists, for example, take requests for advice and assistance from readers, responding to them in a regular column. A columnist can also use a column as an educational forum; for example, a gardening column might include answers to questions about plant identifications from readers. Reader submissions can also be used to distribute information or coordinate community exchanges. Editorials are also commonly presented in a column format. In an editorial commentary, a columnist is generally quite opinionated, discussing an ongoing issue or news items. Editorial columnists can also write endorsements for elections, provide information for citizens who want to get involved in particular causes, or provide a forum for debate, as in the case of a publication which has two columnists of opposing views who duel over a topic in a jointly-produced column. Working as a columnist requires good writing skills and a strong work ethic, because the day to day burden of producing a column can be quite significant. Some columnists start out as journalists, while others may be asked to consider becoming a columnist because of their expertise in a field. An economist, for example, might be invited to produce a weekly column on economic issues for the readers of a newspaper.

Asma Shums (Miracle’s Writer)
Typically in our culture a women’s life is done after marriage, especially a mother of four kids, but not for me. Every new day I find a new me waiting to do something new, exploring my inner self. I never stick to old ideas but I hold past experiences close to my heart, as well as my failure and my stumbles. I have always been determined not to repeat any mistake. I raise my bar higher for life challenges after every defeat, always planting my feet firmly on the ground and my desire to find my hidden talents unfazed. I have worn many hats in my life, a writer, debater, teacher, councilor, designer, therapist and the list goes on. One thing I have learned from my life experiences, is that confidence doesn’t come only with your appearance, but it comes from your heart when you realize real value of yourself.

Pakistani human rights lawyer Asma Jahangir dies
By: Alia Chughtai A leading Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist, Asma Jahangir, has died in the eastern city of Lahore at age 66. Local media reported Jahangir died in a hospital on Sunday after suffering cardiac arrest.“She was always on the front line for progressive voices, even when democracy was under threat,” said Sherry Rehman, an opposition senator in Pakistan’s parliament and Jahangir’s friend. “As a close friend, we bickered on issues, but she introduced me to human rights when I was a young journalist,” she told Al Jazeera. “We are all reeling from shock, the global human rights community is bereft - one of Pakistan’s brightest faces is gone.” Known for her persistence on
advocating for issues including women’s rights and discrimination against minorities, Jahangir was the first woman to serve as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. Critical of Pakistan’s military, intelligence and armed groups, she braved death threats, imprisonment and beatings as she pushed for human rights cases. She helped bonded labourers get legislation passed through parliament and worked on blasphemy cases. She was arrested in 2007 by the government of then military ruler Pervez Musharraf. “Pakistan mourns for losing one of its bravest daughters who fought for human rights. She will be remembered throughout the journey towards stronger women
rights in Pakistan,” Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab chief minister, told Al Jazeera. Jahangir’s supporters and colleagues took to social media to offer their condolences. She is survived by two daughters and a son. Her daughter Muneezay is a leading journalist. “Pakistan has lost its fiercest leader,” said Salman Sufi, director general Strategic Reforms Unit of the Punjab Government. He told Al Jazeera Jahangir propelled the issues of women’s rights “in the darkest days faced by our country”.“Her role in getting the Punjab Women Protection Authority was undeniably crucial,” he continued, referring to an order protecting women from violence by establishing centres across Punjab province.
