Pakistan set to be placed on FATF’s grey list in June

C

onfusion about whether or not Pakistan has been put on a ‘grey list’ by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) continued on Friday as a public statement by the international watchdog announcing the outcomes of its plenary session held in Paris this week remained silent on the US move to put the country on the watchlist.

Pakistan does not feature on the list of countries with strategic deficiencies posing a risk to the international financial system issued along with the FATF statement following the meeting.

The list now features nine countries Ethiopia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tabago, Vanuatu and Tunisia, while Bosnia and Herzegovina has been moved to the white list.

The absence of Pakistan’s name from the list of “Jurisdictions with strategic anti-money laundering / countering the financing of terrorism deficiencies for which they have developed an action plan with the FATF”, posted on the official website of the watchdog following the plenary session, indicates that Pakistan has apparently survived the attempt to put it on the watchlist that could have had serious economic repercussions for the country.

However, a top official privy to the development confirmed to Dawn that the US succeeded in calling a second vote on Thursday night for its motion to ‘grey list’ Pakistan at

the FATF plenary meeting during which China and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia changed their earlier stance by remaining silent. The only country left opposing the motion was Turkey which was indicated by a statement shared by Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Twitter.

“Thank you Turkey for standing with Pakistan against all odds and proving that we are one. We are proud to have a brother like you.”

An earlier discussion on the motion, held on Tuesday, saw opposition from China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, causing the motion to fail.

Back in Pakistan, the government remained silent on the matter as confusion prevailed throughout the day following reports in Indian media that Pakistan had indeed been grey listed, despite Foreign Minister Khwaja Asif ’s claims shared over twitter that the country had earned a three-month reprieve. Those reports were followed by more in the international media claiming the same thing, and sourcing their information to highly placed diplomats directly in the know.

But the statement released by FATF following the plenary meetings later in the evening made no mention of Pakistan, fuelling the confusion and talk that these stories were all wrong.

Later in the evening, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance, Miftah Ismail, who has been leading Pakistan’s diplomacy to defeat the motion sponsored by the US went on air to confirm that the motion had indeed passed. This happened following an extraordinary second vote that the US managed to arrange on Thursday night, two days after the motion had been defeated in the first round of discussion, a top official confirmed to Dawn.

Pakistan is now set to be ‘grey listed’ by FATF in June, meaning its financial system will be designated as posing a risk to the international financial system because of “strategic deficiencies” in its ability to prevent terror financing and money laundering. In the meantime, the government will work with FATF to build an “action plan” to plug the deficiencies identified by the watchdog, which will be put up for approval by consensus in the June session. After that, implementation of the plan will begin, monitored by the Asia Pacific Group, a part of the global FATF network.

If there is a failure to build consensus on the action plan, Pakistan could be black listed by FATF, a status currently applied only to Iran and North Korea.

The country spent three years on the grey list between 2012 and 2015, without the designation affecting its ability to float international bonds, borrow from multilateral bodies, receive or send remittances or conduct international trade.

The status does little more than raising the compliance burden on counterparts, such as correspondent banks, dealing with entities within Pakistan’s financial system, and therefore attaches an additional cost to many external sector transactions.

The US and the UK had jointly moved the FATF nominating Pakistan for placement on the “grey list” and were subsequently joined

by France and Germany. The accusation against Pakistan was that it had not taken action on some of the entities and individuals designated as terrorists by the UN Security Council Resolution 1267. More specifically the concern was about Jamaat-ud-Dawa and Falah-i-In-

saniyat Foundation being allowed to operate in the country, and Hafiz Saeed being free to organise rallies and raise funds.

Pakistan believes that the move was politically motivated.

“Pakistan has serious concerns over and objections to the introduction of this new “nomination” procedure, which is unprecedented and in clear violation of established rules/practices of FATF. Most of the concerns raised by the US side regarding deficiencies in our CFT/ AML regime had already been addressed in 2015 when Pakistan got an exit from the grey list,” said FO spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal.

Days before the FATF meeting, Pakistan took important policy decisions by amending the anti-terror legislation through a presidential ordinance to include all UN-listed individuals and groups in the national listings of proscribed outfits and persons.

Similarly, an announcement was made to deploy troops in Saudi Arabia to meet a key demand of the kingdom in an effort to get the crucial Gulf Cooperation Council vote at the FATF. The diplomatic outreach was commenced to foil the Western bid believed to have been made at India’s behest. A report of actions taken by Pakistan government to comply with FATF requirements was also presented at the Paris plenary.

PML-N elects Nawaz as ‘Quaid for life’, Shahbaz as interim party president

PML-N bigwigs on Tuesday, during a meeting called to choose an interim party president, elected Nawaz Sharif as “[the party’s] Quaid (leader) for life”.

Maryam Nawaz confirmed the development in a tweet as the PML-N Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting was underway at the Sharif family’s Model Town residence in Lahore. “Raja Zafarul Haq, Prime Minister Abbasi and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ’s proposal elicited a resound-

ing approval from [the] CWC,” Maryam said.

PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq proposed Nawaz’s elevation as ‘quaid for life’, saying, “Mian Nawaz Sharif was, is and Inshallah will remain the leader of the PML-N”.His proposal, followed by chants of “Wazir-e-Azam, Nawaz Sharif ”, was endorsed by Prime Minister Khaqan Abbasi, who said: “These are the peoples’ decisions. Punjab Assembly calls for amendment in NAB Ordinance

Punjab Assembly on Wednesday expressed concern over the recent actions taken by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) demanded of the federal government to amend the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999 to prohibit the use of “illegal powers”.

“Harassing senior officials, insulting them, highlighting their names in media, and doing character assassination on the part of NAB is illegal and unethical,” read the resolution passed by the provincial assembly.

The resolution, which was presented by Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, urged all institutions including NAB to ensure upholding basic human rights, and ethical values in accordance with the Constitution. It also asked the federal government to take measures to discuss the issue in the parliament.The provincial government also demanded to eliminate the plea bargain clause from the ordinance.

2 Pakistani soldiers killed in cross-LoC firing by Indian security forces

Two soldiers embraced martyrdom when Indian troops initiated “unprovoked” firing across the restive Line of Control (LoC) on Thursday, said a press release issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

According to Pakistan army’s media affairs wing, the casualties occurred in Bhimber sector, located in the southernmost Bhimber district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

“Indian troops initiated unprovoked firing in Bhimber sector. Two Pakistan army soldiers embraced shahadat,” the

ISPR said in a late night press release.

The ISPR identified the deceased soldiers as 32-years old Sepoy Muhammad Munir Chohan, a resident of village Rakri Chohan in tehsil Forward Kahuta of district Haveli, and 28-years old Sepoy Aamir Hussain, a resident of Danna village in tehsil Samahni of district Bhimber. Pakistan army troops reportedly responded to Indian firing and reports of substantial damage to Indian posts were received.

The heavily militarised LoC that splits the disputed Himalayan region of

Kashmir between Pakistan and India has been constantly witnessing an exchange of fire in a serious breach of a ceasefire agreement signed by the two armies in November 2003.

Resultantly, a number of civilian casualties have occurred in AJK. According to AJK State Disaster Management Authority, 14 civilians have lost their lives while another 62 have been wounded in AJK in the ongoing year due to Indian shelling.

UK’s May confirms Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visit Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s 32-year-old crown prince, will visit the UK from March 7 on an official trip, according to Downing Street sources. A spokesperson for Theresa May, the UK’s prime minister, said the meeting will tackle international challenges, such as “terrorism, extremism, the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen and other regional issues such as Iraq and Syria”. Since the Saudi-led military intervention started in Yemen in March 2015, the Arab world’s poorest country has found itself on the brink of a devastating humanitarian crisis, with the UNwarning of widespread famine and spread of disease. British arms companies are some of the biggest suppliers of weapons to Saudi Arabia, and the British government has approved billions of pounds in export licences over the past three years.

Rights groups have repeatedly condemned the Saudi-led coalition over civilian casualties in Yemen, but the UK has yet to take any punitive measures against Riyadh. An official visit by Mohammed bin Salman (also known as MBS) had been anticipated for weeks, prompting groups such as Stop the War Coalition, the Campaign Against Arms Trade, and the Arab Human Rights Organisation to petition May to withdraw an invitation to the crown prince. In the kingdom, Mohammed bin Salman is credited with leading a series of social reforms, such as allowing women to drive and lifting a 35-year

ban on cinemas. However, activists say Saudi Arabia still has a poor human rights record and have warned against interpreting these reforms as heralding new freedoms. “Mohammed bin Salman’s long overdue reforms in Saudi Arabia must not be used to mask the ongoing crackdown on the exercise of fundamental rights,” Reprieve, a UK-based rights group that campaigns against the death penalty, said on Tuesday. Over the past few years, the kingdom has sentenced several protesters to death. “Since his appointment as crown prince, the final death sentences of protesters, including a number who were children at the time, have been confirmed amid serious allegations of torture and an unprecedented number of executions,” Reprieve said, calling on May to demand that Saudi Arabia abolish capital punishment for protest-related offences. “The close relationship Theresa May trumpets has led to British police officers training Saudi agents in the kind of cyber-monitoring techniques which have been used to justify death sentences,” Reprieve said. By Tuesday, more than 11,000 people had signed an online petition calling on May to cancel the crown prince’s visit.

Syria’s war: Eastern Ghouta ceasefire violations kill four

At least four civilians have been killed during a truce in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta, activists said, as Syrian government forces launched fresh attacks in the rebel-held Damascus suburb. Syrian warplanes launched several air raids in Douma and Harasta on Tuesday, Mahmoud Adam, a spokesman for Syria’s Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, told Al Jazeera. In Douma, one of Eastern Ghouta’s main towns, four people, including a woman, lost their lives and several others have been wounded, Adam said. Alaa al-Ahmed, a local activist, told Al Jazeera that the attacks started at 9:30am (7:30 GMT) on Tuesday, 30 minutes after a Russia-backed ceasefire began. The truce was meant to allow civilians to evacuate from the rebel-held enclave, which has been under continuous aerial bombardment since February 18. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin had ordered the ceasefire from 9am to 2pm (7:00 to 12:00 GMT) on Tuesday, as air raids and ground operations killed more than 550 civilians in the last eight days, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). According to alAhmed, Russia did not provide a guarantee or a “trusted third party” to help evacuate the injured out of the area. “How could people trust Russia - the same people bombing us - with assisting in the safe evacuation of the injured?” he said. “There is huge contradiction.” The bombardment of the Damascus suburb, home to some 400,000 people, has

been one of the most intense in Syria’s sevenyear war. “What happened this morning is a clear violation of the truce - which is merely propaganda,” al-Ahmed said. The suburb’s humanitarian situation has been deteriorating, causing widespread international condemnation, with UN secretary-general describing the situation in the enclave as “hell on earth”. On Monday, a suspected chemical attack killed one child, according to Syria’s Civil Defence. The reported chlorine gas attack injured at least 18 others when it hit Eastern Ghouta’s al-Shifaniyah town close to the front lines, where rebels are fighting Syrian ground forces who have been trying to penetrate into the besieged enclave since Sunday. Nour Othman, a local journalist based in Douma, told Al Jazeera that warplanes also struck the al-Marj area on Tuesday morning, a town near the outskirts of Douma. “Tens of people have been injured,” he said. And in the town of Misraba, at least seven people have been wounded as a result of surface-to-surface missiles, Othman added. “The medical facilities are in a state of chaos - either because of the shelling or due to the high number of admitted injuries,” he

Taliban: Doha office remains vital for talks

The Afghan Taliban has called for direct talks with the US to take place in its political office in Qatar. A senior Taliban official based in Doha told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that the group invites US officials to its political office in Qatar to discuss a “peaceful solution” to end the bloodshed in Afghanistan. His comments followed local news media reports in Kabul on Friday, claiming that the Afghan government has been discussing with Qatari authorities the closure of the Taliban’s Doha office. The media reports cited government officials as saying the Doha office had “no positive consequence in terms of facilitating the peace talks”. In an apparent warning to the Afghan government, the Taliban official said further talk of shuttering the Doha office would scuttle the group’s offer of talks altogether. The Taliban official also said that departure of American troops from Afghanistan remains a precondition for the group’s talks offer. “Our struggle is for the liberation of the country,” he said. “It is not a power struggle. How can a liberation struggle be deemed complete without foreign forces pulling out? “Since it is [only] the US which can decide and implement a decision for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan, that is why direct talks with the US are necessary in the first phase. “During a second phase, we can sit with the Afghan government and discuss all of the domestic issues.” The Taliban broached the possibility of direct talks with the US two weeks ago, with the group issuing a letter calling on Americans and “peace-loving congressmen” to convince US President Donald Trump to join negotiations. Following the overture, Afghan officials said on Tuesday the Taliban should instead hold discussions with the Kabul government, adding that they were willing to meet the group’s representatives “anywhere”. “[The Taliban] have twice asked the US and said they are ready for direct talks with the United States.

But the Afghan government is telling [the Taliban] that if you are Afghans, come and talk with Afghanistan. The Afghan government is ready to talk,” Tolonews, a leading Afghan media outlet, quoted presidential spokesperson Haroon Chakhansuri as saying on Tuesday. The back and forth came

Liberals introduce new paternity leave, budget Liberals take aim at 2019 election with lays foundation for pharmacare plan budget to focus on gender equality

The federal budget earmarks $1.2 billion over five years, starting in 2018-19 to introduce a new Employment Insurance Parental Sharing Benefit that will provide five extra weeks of “use it or lose it” EI parental benefits when both parents share the leave. This option is expected to become available in June 2019.

In the budget, the federal Liberals announce the creation of an Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare to address the affordability of prescription medication. The council, which will be led by former Ontario health minister Dr. Eric Hoskins, will “begin a national dialogue,” meeting with experts as well as Indigenous, provincial and territorial leaders to recommend a way forward. Though, no specific money is attached to this pledge. The government is also overhauling the Working Income Tax Benefit, now being called the Canada Workers Benefit. It will take effect in 2019 and will increase the maximum benefit by up to $170, meaning in that year a lowincome person earning $15,000 a year could receive up to $500 more in a tax credit than in years past. In an interview with Don Martin on CTV’s Power Play, Morneau said the initiatives the government has brought forward in past budgets have made “an enormous difference” for women and families and he views the latest round of budgetary measures as going “a step further.” “We’re just saying that an economy works if everyone has access to work opportunities, if everyone reaches their maximum potential and that’s what we’re trying to achieve for women

because we know that what that’s going to drive, is a strong economy for all Canadians,” Morneau said. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer was critical of the government’s fiscal plan. “Justin Trudeau promised he would spend money on infrastructure that would grow the economy over the long term, but the reality is that infrastructure investments are actually being cut, things like roads, and bridges, ports and highways,” he told reporters after the budget was tabled.

“These are the facts to remember when we hear the Liberals trying to take credit for our recent economic performance or when they talk about helping families.” Scheer also said that Trudeau has failed to keep his promises to the middle class, while raising taxes on businesses. “What he gives with one hand, he takes more with the other,” he said. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh took issue with the Liberals’ plans to look at national pharmacare options. He said the NDP put forward a motion in the House earlier this year “on getting that ball rolling…and the government voted against that plan.” “So it doesn’t show a true commitment to actually implementing pharmacare,” Singh told reporters.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May said that while there are positives in the budget, and as a feminist she was pleased to see progress on pay equity and more money for science, she still thinks the government isn’t going far enough to address the impacts of climate change, and said pharmacare is the only “big new idea” included in the budget.

MP responsible for Atwal invite fiasco steps down as B.C. caucus chair Surrey Liberal MP Randeep Sarai is stepping down as chair of the Pacific Caucus after inviting a would-be assassin to a dinner reception with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in India. Sarai has taken responsibility for inviting Jaspal Atwal — a B.C. Sikh convicted of the attempted murder of an Indian cabinet minister in B.C. in 1986 — to an event during Trudeau’s recent trip to India. “I want to again apologize for my role in recent unfortunate events,” said Sarai in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. “Moving forward, I will be exercising better judgment. “As I don’t want to distract from the good work of the Pacific Caucus, I will be stepping down as caucus chair.” Trudeau has accepted Sarai’s resignation, said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. Controversy erupted last week after Atwal was photographed with the prime minister’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau at an event in Mumbai, then was invited to a dinner reception at the Canadian High Commissioner’s residence in Delhi.

The federal government is putting an emphasis on gender equality in the 2018 budget, but proposes only modest new spending as Canada’s economy continues to perform well.

The 2018 budget focuses on increasing the number of women in the workforce, and also emphasizes investments in technology and research. Total new spending over the next year comes in at $5.4 billion, of $338.5 billion in overall planned spending. The federal government is projecting an $18.1 billion deficit in 2018-19, dropping to $17.5 billion in 201920. During the last federal election the Liberals pledged to not run deficits over $10 billion and said they’d return to balance by 2019, a promise their own numbers now indicate will not be kept. Canada’s federal debt as a percentage of GDP is projected to fall from 30.4 per cent in 2017-18 to 30.1 per cent in 2018-19. The GDP growth rate is projected to slow from 3.0 per cent in 2017, to 2.2 per cent in 2018, bottoming out at 1.6 per cent in 2019. Budget 2018 includes a $3 billion adjustment for risk in 2018-19 and following years. “The government numbers show that the pace of economic growth in the economy is going to slow, and this is going to limit their tax revenues. This is one of the reasons why this is a very modest budget,” said Conference Board of Canada’s Craig Alexander. “Their fiscal projections really haven’t changed from last year; they’re on the same course that they were on before.” In the 370-page document, the government offers no direct response to uncertainty in the country about the fate of NAFTA and the competitive corporate tax rates in the United States. In his remarks to reporters inside the budget lockup, Morneau registered the concern and didn’t rule out future measures to address the loss of competitiveness. “We’re looking at how we can have a really good long-term impact, and I will say that we are doing it in a fiscally-responsible way… which allows us to deal with the challenges that we may face,” Morneau said.

Economists view the 2018 budget, titled: “Equality and Growth for a Strong Middle Class”, as a largely status quo spending plan.

“I would characterize it as a stay the course budget, sort of a stock-taking prior to next year’s political budget; that will be the one to watch,” said Fred O’Riordan, leader in tax policy for Ernst & Young LLP. Informed by gender-based analysis from each and every government department for the first time in Canadian history the federal budget and all measures proposed have been assessed for how they will impact men and women differently. The federal government is hopeful that the various 2018 budget measures to encourage women’s participation in the workforce will lead to growth in the Canadian economy

in coming years. “When you look at all of the different aspects… it is saying that if you want true equality it has to go through all of the initiatives in the budget and that’s what we’re seeing here,” said Claire Beckton, executive director of the Carleton University Centre for Women in Politics and Public Leadership.

One of the marquee gender equality-focused announcements in the federal budget: the implementation of pay equity legislation for federally regulated sectors. The pay equity legislation will be wrapped into the 2018 budget implementation bill. This long-promised policy is aimed at closing the wage gap, making it so men and women receive equal pay for the same work. Currently in Canada, women make around 88 cents for every $1 a man earns. In what could be viewed as a response to the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, the budget includes $50.4 million over five years to address sexual harassment in the workplace. Of this, $25.4 million will go to increasing legal aid funding. The government also intends to amend the Parliament of Canada Act to make it possible for parliamentarians to take maternity and parental leave. Currently no such provision is available, leaving MPs to have to work out case-by-case leave scenarios with their parties. This is part of a bigger promise to take steps to make Parliament more family friendly. Other measures that fit the government’s broader gender equity theme are: $86 million over five years to build on Canada’s gender-based violence strategy; $30 million over three years for research and promotion of women and girls’ participation in sport, with a goal of gender equity at all levels by 2035; and, $19.9 million over five years to pilot an Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women in male-dominated trades. In addition to multiple nominal funding to promote gender equality, the budget sets aside $105 million for a “nationally coordinated, regionally tailored” fund for women entrepreneurs. “Every single decision on expenditure and tax measures was informed

by GBA+,” the budget reads. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that taking steps to advance gender equality, Canada could grow its economy by $150 billion by 2026.

Randeep Sarai, the MP for Surrey Centre, announced he was stepping down from the role on Tuesday. The party has numerous caucuses for regions such as Quebec and Toronto. Sarai chaired a caucus of MPs from British Columbia. Voted into the job in October 2016, Sarai is stepping down after Jaspal Atwal, allegedly a former member of terrorist organization the International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), was invited to an event hosted by the Canadian High Commissioner in India.

Sarai later took responsibility for Atwal’s name having appeared on a guest list and said he should have exercised better judgment. A Canadian official said in a background briefing with media that Atwal’s invitation was orchestrated by people within

the Indian government. Conservative leader Andrew Scheer called those remarks a “conspiracy theory.”

For his part, Trudeau backed the official who held this briefing in Question Period on Tuesday.

“Our professional non-partisan service does high quality work, and when one of our top diplomats and security officials says something to Canadians, it’s because they know it to be true,” he said..

How to start over after a life of sins?

by Dina Mohamed Basiony eople are difficult sometimes. Right? If you had an argument with someone, and then you try to talk to them again, you’ll feel like things are not the same anymore. They might not meet you with the same open arms and complete acceptance like before. And if you had several problems or downfalls with the same person, then that person might black-list you and make sure not to accept you back in his/her life because of your mistakes.

This is how we treat each other sometimes.

But this is NOT how Allah treats us!

Allah’s Name is ArRahman ArRaheem (The Continuously Merciful, The Especially Merciful), and He is indeed uniquely and exceedingly Merciful than any of His creation.

Look at this hadith…

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah’s Messenger) said:“Verily, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than a person who has his camel in a waterless desert carrying his provision of food and drink and it is lost. He, having lost all hopes (to get that back), lies down in shade and is disappointed about his camel; when all of a sudden he finds that camel standing before him. He takes hold of its reins and then out of boundless joy blurts out: ‘O Allah, You are my slave and I am Your Rubb’.

He commits this mistake out of extreme joy”.

[Sahih Muslim] This is actually saying that if you want to turn to Allah in repentance and you are embarrassed or ashamed of your sins and mistakes, Allah will never meet you with rejection or lack of trust. On the absolute contrary, He will be in extreme joy and He will be more pleased for you turning back to Him than you could ever imagine. Allah is telling you to never be embarrassed to come back to Him again and again and again, no matter how many times you have fallen or how long you have been away.

Remember this hadith?

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, “Allah, the Exalted, has said: ‘O son of Adam, I forgive you as long as you pray to Me and hope for My forgiveness, whatever sins you have committed. O son of ‘Adam, I do not care if your sins reach the height of the heaven, then you ask for my forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of ‘Adam, if you come to Me with an earth load of sins, and meet Me associating nothing to Me, I would match it with an earthload of forgiveness.”‘ [At- Tirmidhi] This is part and parcel of this religion. No matter how many times you have sinned or how gravely you have sinned, you can ALWAYS come back to Allah in repentance, and He will always accept you…

“And it is He who accepts repentance from his

servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.” (Qur’an 42: 25) Now, this doesn’t mean that we should abuse this mercy and this kindness. This does not mean that we should indulge in wrongdoing, sinning, heedlessness and being completely distant from fulfilling our purpose in life.

Allah Glorified and Exalted created us for a purpose. He created us and honored us with the ability to learn about Him, so much so than any other creation; He honored us with the ability to love Him more so than any other creation.

To learn, love, worship Allah and fulfill our relationship with Him and our purpose in life, we need to be consciously following the perfect plan He provided for us.

We need to be consciously engaging in a relationship with Him. It doesn’t make sense to ignore Him for the most part of our lives and then meet Him suddenly on the Day of Judgement and expect to be popped into Paradise while we haven’t fulfilled our purpose of creation. Right?

The Ultimate Mercy of Allah is granted for those who are sincerely making an effort to rectify their affairs. You just have to be consciously and sincerely seeking Allah and His path.

Allah says: “But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.” ( Qur’an 20: 82) So the point is for us to be serious about our relationship with Allah and bettering ourselves.

If you do have this desire, but still engaged in sins, then what to do?

1. First thing is to stop the sin. Do not persist on committing the sin or going back to it. Make conscious, serious effort to stop and quit the sin.

2. Second, sincerely regret the sin. Regret is essential in showing sincerity. If you truly regret a wrongdoing, then you understand why Allah told us that it is harmful and you desire to make things right and find the halal and pure means that Allah subhanu wa Ta’la prescribed instead.

3 Third, seek forgiveness of Allah and repent from the wrongdoing.

One of the ways to do that is to follow what was mentioned in this hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) says: “There is no one who commits a sin then purifies himself well (does wudoo’/ablution) and stands and prays two rak’ahs (two units

4.Lastly, have a strong, sincere intention not to go back to the sin.

When you do the above successfully, you’ll have a fresh clean start, insha’Allah.

Now, you need to remember one very important point. Allah is your Ultimate Helper. No one can progress in this path without the Help and Mercy of Allah. There is a reason why we repeat the verse ” It is You we worship and You we ask for help.” ( Qur’an 1: 5) in Surat Al Fatiha 17 times everyday during the five daily prayers.

It is Allah who ultimately helps us on His path.

He is not a faraway Goal, He is our ally and Helper if we truly want to better ourselves.

Actually, the fact that you want to repent to Allah means that HE is The One who wants you to return to Him and He wants to accept your repentance!

He says in the Qur’an: “Then He turned to them so they could repent.

Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.” (Qur’an Surat AtTawba, Chapter 9: 118) So always remember that so long as you are serious and sincere in seeking Him, He will facilitate and open doors for you.

Now, what are things to remember on this path as you start over?

1- Establishing prayer: this is the most important thing to work on right now. This is the daily connection and commitment you have with Allah Almighty. It keeps you focused and always link you with Him. Also prayer is the first thing that the person will be asked about on The Day of Judgement. So take it seriously and make sure you do it consistently and on time.

Remember that prayer and Qur’an are interrelated. Your knowledge of the Qur’an and understanding of it will increase your concentration and your presence in prayer and the degree to which you really feel connected to Allah Almighty. When we truly listen and concentrate on the words of Allah and the fact that we’re standing between His Hands in prayer, then we will feel the love of Allah, awe of His Power and Might, the fear of misguidance, remembrance of the Day of Judgment, the closeness of death… and all the experiences that Allah lets our hearts and bodies experience upon lis-

Islm.

So work on establishing your prayers.

2- Connecting more deeply with the Qur’an.

Reading the Quran is a pleasure, guidance, cure, relief and mercy for the sincere seekers.

Try to learn the meanings of what you read in depth. This will truly fill your heart and mind with awe of Allah and it will keep you focused on the straight path.

If there are Quranic tafsir sessions in your area, attend them. If there is an institute that organizes sessions on tadabbur Al Quran (pondering on the meaning of the Quran), then seek this opportunity.

There are several institutions online as well that help greatly with that, like Bayyinah Tv and Bayyinah Institute, they have short and quite interesting explanations of the Quran that will help transform your relationship with it greatly.

Try to look for the meaning and explanation and linguistic beauty of the Qur’an to enrich your experience and aid you in connecting further with the word of Allah. There are plenty of resources available freely online.

(Check Quran Weekly on YouTube for example).

3- Seek righteous companionship. It is a very important aspect of this path to have righteous friends that aid you on the path, remind you when you forget and uplift you when you feel down. See if you can volunteer in a nearby masjid, find charitable projects to volunteer in and help the poor/needy and the orphans. These are all activities that shall fill your time with goodness and introduce you to pious friends.

And don’t forget that first and foremost, you must seek Allah’s Help. Make sincere dua (supplication) to Allah to really help you and guide you and show you the way, and most definitely Allah is The Responsive and The Most Near.

So long as your soul is still in your body, there is still hope and Allah is opening the opportunities wide open for you. Seek the path of Allah because in it you will find ultimate and true peace, completion and satisfaction. You will find soothing pleasure, hope, meaning, purification and light that you haven’t experienced before through any other means. Allah gives us the path and the cure and His own Help and Support. So seek the opportunity and don’t waste it. Start now. Make dua to Allah and He will hear you and He will respond and He will open doors. Pray to Him constantly, listen to His words and understand them, be in the company or those who remember Him and seek Him, do righteous deeds as much as you can…. and you will find you entire life uplifted, filled with hope, meaning and purpose.

Just start and keep going… there is no hopelessness in this path.

By:Hafsa Khan On Feb 24 th , the Muslim Food Bank hosted their 9th annual Fundraising Dinner at the Royal King Palace and Convention Centre.

Arriving on the heels of the heaviest snowfall that the Lower Mainland has seen this winter, and against difficult odds, the dinner was a success raising more than $100,000.

With over 400 guests in attendance, the first hour could only be described as organized chaos. Upon entering the venue, guests were greeted by the ticketing queue where, more often than not, they would run into a familiar face and exchange in a heartfelt greeting. Next, the guest proceeded to the hall where volunteers, tasked with ushering the guests to their seats, could be found lined up alongside the entryway to the hall, a ready smile on their faces.

Only after the majority of the guests had found their seats did the night officially begin.

After a brief introduction, the two hosts for the evening, Brother Kabir Qurban and Br. Imran Ali led the guests into a simple dua followed by a series of speeches prepared by various MFB organizers as well as important sponsors of the organization.

Then, in an unprecedented turn of events, the opening dialogue was followed immediately by dinner being served, much to the surprise and appreciation of those attending.

It was only after most of the guests had finished with what was on their plate that the true fun began. The guest speaker for the evening, one Brother Riad Ouarzazi,

immediately captured the crowd’s interest by engaging them in some light hearted banter around topics such as love, marriage, and how the former was affected by the latter.

No one was spared his teasing, not even MFB Director Azim Dahya himself, who found himself on the hot seat on two separate occasions, but graciously managed to navigate the situation in both instances. Brother Ouarzazi then turned his focus to the matter at hand, raising funds for MFBCS. In high spirits, the crowd was quick to respond to his call for action, and donations big and small came tumbling down.

Overall, the 9th annual Muslim Food Bank Fundraising Dinner was a huge success alhamdulillah with the blessings and mercy of Allah (SWT), through the generosity of the MFBCS’ sponsors; Azim Dahya & Company, Vango Vapes, Falcon Travel, Derna Dental Clinic, Swim Recruiting, Nana’s Kitchen, Islamic Relief Canada, Al Iman Islamic Centre, The BCMA, Community Outreach Pharmacy, Flying Arrows, PCRS WorkBC, Ghani Law Ltd, Metro Express, Bilal Cheema, Dr. Halah Ahmed, and Kamron Bajwa, the hard work of MFBCS’ numerous volunteers and coordinators, the efficiency of the staff at Royal King Palace and Convention Centre and of course, the participation and donations of all those who attended.

To all of them, the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society extends its deepest thank you, and we hope to see you again next year.

Policies in North America” in order to determine if ICBC continues to serve the best interests of British Columbians going forward, if they are elected in the next election.

Mr. Wilkinsion further highlighted that the NDP balanced budget has no room for error and does not take into account contingency factors, such as an abnormal forest fire season which could result in a substantial increase in Expenses and therefore, placing the budget in a deficit. He also highlighted that the NDP budget proposes the BC economy will grow at a pace of 2.4%

Truce in Syria’s Ghouta bears stalemate

DAMASCUS: Civilians in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta enclave snubbed a safe passage offered

by Russia for a second day Wednesday, as rebels and Moscow blamed each other for the humanitarian deadlock.

The bombardment that killed nearly 600 civilians in 10 days largely stopped but not one of the battered region’s 400,000 residents left to board the buses provided by the regime.

AFP reporters saw no movement at the Wafideen checkpoint through which would-be evacuees were told to exit Eastern Ghouta, which the government lost in 2012 and has besieged almost ever since.

“The humanitarian corridor is open to all those who wish to return to the fold of the homeland, but so far nobody came and this is the second day,” a military officer said there.

Russia on Monday announced a “humanitarian pause” in the bombardment of the enclave that would provide five hours every day for civilians there to flee safely.

The move was welcomed inside and outside the enclave as respite from one of the bloodiest assaults in Syria’s seven-year-old war.

But the hundreds of civilians in need of medical evacuation were not coming out nor were any aid convoys going in.

The Syrian regime has accused the Islamist and jihadist groups inside Ghouta of sabotaging the initiative by shelling the designated humanitarian corridors to hold civilians as human shields.

“The terrorists are impeding those who want to cross, either by putting pressure on them or by firing on the humanitarian corridors,” the military officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.The first five-hour “pause” on Tuesday passed with only two killed in regime bombardment, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britainbased war monitor.

No casualties at all were reported when Wednesday’s humanitarian window closed at 2:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) but warplanes were back in the sky moments later.

The officer at Wafideen checkpoint warned that if Thursday was equally fruitless, the measure may be dropped, raising fears that the kind of bombardment that killed dozens of civilians every day this month would resume.

“The truce was meant to last three days. It could be extended but why go on if there are no results,” he said.

Inside rebel-held Eastern Ghouta, the residents AFP spoke to were distrustful of a

measure put in place by Russia, whose warplanes rained munitions on them alongside Syrian aircraft.

The three main armed groups inside the territory, which lies within mortar range of the capital Damascus, said they wanted more international guarantees.

In a letter sent to the United Nations on Tuesday, they said they were willing to expel the jihadist factions that also have a footprint in Eastern Ghouta.

But they demanded that any evacuations be conducted under the supervision of a UN mechanism.

While it has stemmed the bloodshed, the “pause” declared by Russia, which is Syrian President Bashar Assad’s main supporter, falls short of the 30-day cease-fire voted on Saturday by the UN Security Council.

UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross said it did not meet the requirements for delivering an efficient aid response to the crisis inside Eastern Ghouta.

“Humanitarian corridors need to be well planned and must be implemented with the consent of parties on all sides,” said Robert Mardini, the ICRC’s Middle East director.

“That’s the only way people leave safely, if

but has yet to take effect, and has inspired little trust from among the besieged enclave’s 400,000 residents.

The regime deployed buses at Al-Wafideen checkpoint to transport residents wanting to use a humanitarian corridor to flee what UN chief Antonio Guterres last called “hell on earth.”

But no civilians were seen venturing toward the regime forces guarding the checkpoint, where large portraits of Syrian President Bashar Assad and Russian President Vladimir Putin could be seen side-by-side.

State news agency SANA accused armed groups in Eastern Ghouta of firing several rockets on the path of the corridor.

It singled out the former Al-Qaeda affiliate

present in some parts of the enclave, accusing it of blocking civilians “to use them as human shields.”

Some residents left the basements they had been cowering in for days to check on their property and buy food.

But many in the enclave, which lies on the eastern outskirts of the Syrian capital, appeared distrustful of a “pause” announced

by Damascus’s main ally.

“This Russian truce is a farce. Russia is killing us and bombing us every day,” said Samer Al-Buaidhani, a 25-year-old from Douma, Eastern Ghouta’s main hub.

“I don’t believe it’s safe for me or my family to leave by this system,” he told AFP. International Committee of the Red Cross

The head of the monitoring group said 38 regime and allied fighters were killed in three days of fighting in the Al-Marj area on the southern edge of the enclave.

At least 18 fighters from the Jeish Al-Islam, Eastern Ghouta’s dominant anti-regime faction, were also killed, Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Walkie-Talkie

early version of the portable two-way wireless radio (walkie-talkie) during the Second World War. In 1937 Donald Hings created a portable radio signaling system for his employer CM&S, which he called a “packset”, but which later became known as the “Walkie-Talkie”. He was working at Cominco in Trail, British Columbia. In 1939 CM&S sent Hings to Ottawa to redevelop his new invention for military use, and he worked there from 1940 to 1945. (1950) Invented by Harry Wasylyk (1927-2013) and Larry Hanson Canadian Inventors Harry Wasylyk & Larry Hansen Harry Wasylyk was a Canadian inventor from Winnipeg, Manitoba, who together with Larry Hansen of Lindsay, Ontario, invented the disposable green polyethylene garbage bag. Garbage bags were first intended for commercial use rather than home use, and the new garbage bags were first sold to the Winnipeg General Hospital.

Coincidentally, another Canadian inventor, Frank Plomp of Toronto also invented a plastic garbage bag in 1950, however, he was not as successful as Wasylyk and Hansen were.

Alkaline Batteries

(1959) Invented by Lewis Urry (1927-2004) As an inventor, he was not a household name. But Lewis Urry’s unsung achievement nearly half a century ago transformed the way we live and helped usher in a world of cordless electric razors, camcorders, cellphones, laptop computers and Walkmans. The Canadian-born Urry was a 28-year-old development engineer for the Canadian National Carbon Co a Toronto division of Union Carbide that made Eveready batteries when he was transferred to Eveready’s Cleveland lab in 1955.

His assignment: Find a way to make standard carbon-zinc batteries last longer.

“In those days, toys were coming out that ran on batteries, but they didn’t sell well because the carbon batteries on the market died after a few minutes’ use,” Urry told the Washington Times in 1999.

Urry held 51 patents, including a number for the lithium battery, which is used in cellphones and cameras.

In 1999, he was inducted into the hall of fame at the Smithsonian Institution, where he presented the first prototype alkaline battery and the first manufactured cylindrical alkaline cell to the museum’s collection. They were put on display in the same room as Thomas Edison’s light bulb.

Black hole research could aid understanding of how small galaxies evolve

S

cientists have solved a cosmic mystery by finding evidence that supermassive black holes prevent stars forming in some smaller galaxies.

These giant black holes are over a million times more massive than the sun and sit in the centre of galaxies sending out powerful winds that quench the star-making process.

Astronomers previously thought they had no influence on the formation of stars in dwarf galaxies but a new study from the University of Portsmouth has proved their role in the process.

The results, presented today at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society, are particularly important because dwarf galaxies (those composed of up to 100 million to several billion stars) are far more numerous than bigger systems and what happens in these is likely to give a more typical picture of the evolution of galaxies.

“Dwarf galaxies outnumber larger galaxies like the Milky Way 50 to one,” says lead researcher Dr Samantha Penny, of the University’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation. “So if we want to tell the full story of

galaxies, we need to understand how dwarf systems work.”

In any galaxy stars are born when clouds of gas collapse under the force of their own gravity. But stars don’t keep being born forever -- at some point star formation in a galaxy shuts off. The reason for this differs in different galaxies but sometimes a supermassive black hole is the culprit.

Supermassive black holes can regulate their host galaxy’s ability to form new stars through a heating process. The black hole drives energy through powerful winds. When this wind hits the giant molecular clouds in which stars would form, it heats the gas, preventing its collapse into new stars.

Previous research has shown that this process can prevent star formation in larger galaxies containing hundreds of billions of stars -- but it was believed a different process could be responsible for dwarf galaxies ceasing to produce stars. Scientists previously thought that the larger galaxies could have been interacting gravitationally with the dwarf systems and pulling the star-making gas away.

Dr Penny said: “Our results are important for astronomy because they potentially impact how we understand galaxy evolution. Supermassive black holes weren’t thought to influence dwarf systems but we’ve shown that isn’t the case. This may well have a big influence on future research as simulations of galaxy formation don’t usually include the heating effect of supermassive black holes in lowmass galaxies, including the dwarf systems we have examined in this work.”

How We Might Harness the Brain’s Pain-Control System for Drug-free Relief

By Rachael Rettner, our body has its own natural pain-relief system, and scientists may be one step closer to learning how to use it.

In a new study, researchers identified a part of the brain that appears to be important in controlling this system. The researchers hope that one day, treatments that harness the power of this part of the brain could provide patients with a natural alternative to powerful pain drugs like opioids.

The new results “build a picture of why and how the brain decides to turn off pain in certain circumstances,” lead study author Ben Seymour, a neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. The study identifies a brain region called the pregenual cingulate cortex “as a critical ‘decision center’ controlling pain in the brain,” Seymour said. For example, after an injury, constant pain forces us to rest, which allows the body to devote much of its energy toward healing. “Pain can actually help us recover by removing our drive to do unnecessary things — in a sense, this can be considered ‘healthy pain,’” Seymour said.

But if this is true, why does the body have a natural painkilling system that turns down the pain signal in some cases, but not in others?

Seymour and his colleagues hypothesized that even “healthy pain” could be a problem if a person could actively do something to help their injury, such as finding a way to cool a burn. So the brain might activate its pain-killing system in these situations, Seymour said.

To test this hypothesis, the researchers carried out several experiments.

First, they attached metal probes to the arms of about 20 healthy participants. The probes were heated to a level that was painful, but

not enough to burn the participants. Next, the volunteers played a game that involved figuring out which button on a small keypad would cool down the probe. In some cases, it was easy to turn off the probe, but in other cases, it was more difficult. During the entire task, the volunteers periodically rated their pain level, and their brain activity was monitored with the use of a brain-imaging technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fRMI).

The researchers found that the participants’ level of pain was related to how much information they needed to learn to complete the task. When participants needed to learn which button to press to relieve their pain, their pain ratings dropped. But when the subjects knew which button to press, their pain levels were not reduced.

Using a computer model, the researchers were able to pinpoint this brain activity to the area of the brain called the pregenual cingulate cortex.

Future research should focus on understanding how this brain area might be “turned on” as a treatment for chronic pain, the researchers said.

It’s important to note that this study only found an association, and didn’t prove that this brain area alone is responsible for turning down participants’ pain.

The study was published online today (Feb. 27) in the journal eLife.

Miracle honors its Writers & its Team Members at Pirzada’s Residence

By Misbah Naseer On Feb 18th, the Miracle Media held a luncheon at the editor in-chief’s residence in Surrey. As guests started arriving, it began to feel like a family reunion where your aunts and uncles were talking on every topic under the sun, joking with each other and respectfully disagreeing with each other. We also saw some new additions to the family that adjusted right away and joined the party.

Shortly after all the guests arrived, the Zuhur prayer was led by Maulana A. Latif Nomani. Ms. Misbah Naseer, assistant editor, welcomed all the guests. The meeting started off with Talawat-e-Quran recited by Farwah Arslan. After the recitation Ms. Misbah shared her personal experience of 16 years on this 17 year long journey of the Miracle. She talked about the behind the scenes activities, role of writers, advisors and advertisers in this journey, the role Miracle has played in the community at large as well as the lives of individuals in the Pirzada family. She then handed over the program to Mr. Naseer Pirzada.

Mr. Pirzada thanked all the writers and editorial board members with their partners. He started with a Quranic ayat and thanked Allah for the completion of 17 years -a long journey that began on Feb 23rd, 2001. That was a remarkable day for the BC Muslim community when Mr. Nusrat Hussain launched the first Muslim Newspaper on biweekly basis. He highly appreciated his and his family’s efforts in launching the newspaper.

Mr. Hussain, founder of Miracle, handed over the responsibility to run the show alone in 2007, and everyone knows how Miracle made its name in the market since then. Mr. Pirzada then invited founder of Miracle

Newspaper, Mr. Nusrat Hussain.

Mr. Nusrat Hussain detailed the history of Miracle from 2001 to 2007. He explained how it started when there was no newspaper for Muslim community in BC and what financial crisis he faced in first year and then in next 5 years, different challenging situations such as the accusation of hate crime after publication of an article, backlash from Muslim associations when they were criticized. There were rewarding memories as well such as holding first Muslim political forum and recognition of Muslim media at all levels of government. He congratulated Mr. Pirzada for keeping the paper going and for always recognizing him as the founding editor.

The second speaker was Mr. Mohammad Rafiq, the former honorary chief editor and Urdu editor of the Miracle. He shared his experience as the Urdu editor when Mr. Pirzada started the regular Urdu section.

He continued till 2014 and enjoyed his role a lot.

After Lunch break Mr. Pirzada introduced Urdu and English writers and the editorial board members of the paper. He mentioned that the Miracle newspaper is not only a paper which covers the articles and the events, but it also showcases the opinions of local Muslim, non-Muslims and Pakistani community.

The Miracle was the first Muslim newspaper in 2001, then Al Ameen started in 2002 and now 5 Muslim community newspapers in the market at monthly / bi-weekly basis.

Allhumdulilla Miracle is proud that we have the highest number of Urdu and English writers on our team amongst BC community papers and described the various ups and downs the newspaper has faced in the past 17 years.

He shared some of the unpleasant experiences and indecent

behaviors that he has faced. Unfortunately, this includes violation of business ethics by fellow community newspapers. He explained to everyone that the Miracle Media Group has spent its own money to purchase distribution boxes and stands which are kept at many Masajids and Restaurants for the convenience of readers. However, distributers of other newspapers that print on the same day have been very disrespectful and are not only using the Miracle’s boxes and stands without seeking permission but also placing their newspapers on top of the Miracle, the rightful owner of these stands. This is a big nuisance for the readers who are falsely led to believe that there are no more copies of the Miracle and it hurts the Miracle as less copies are picked up.

Everyone was dismayed that other newspapers, especially Muslim newspapers which are supposed to follow the Islamic values of honesty and fairness in their business dealings, were engaged in such actions and have not corrected it. An action plan was formulated with the help of everyone’s suggestions and the Miracle will be taking strict actions based on their suggestions.

Mr. Pirzada then invited all writers and board members their opinions about the Miracle.

Maulana A. Latif Nomani the religious advisor of the Miracle said his relations between Miracle since many years, he said he started the “ Rohani Daak” or Spiritual Mail” in Miracle few years ago but some readers made it very controversial which why it was stopped. Mr. M. Ali Wahla also expressed his views as an Urdu writer. He writes “Noor Baseerat” Islamic articles at different topics.

Mr. Azhar Syed, advisory committee member, expressed his honest opinion about Miracle. He told everyone about his long term relationship with Miracle, Mr. Nusrat and Mr. Pirzada and that Mr. Pirzada honors him to discuss every sensitive issue of Miracle invluding articles, any distribution matter or non-payment of Miracle Advertisers matters.

He urged Miracle’s Urdu writers to expand their writing topics from Pakistani politics and issues, and consider writing about Canadian issues too. At the end Mr. Syed presented a ‘Kashmiri Shawl’ to Mr. Pirzada as a token of recognition for his community services.

Mrs. Alam Aara responded to Mr Syed’s concerns and she promised she will try to write on Canadian issues in future. She also explained how Br. Rafiq pushed him to write for Miracle and now she is working on her 5th book, and she owes it to Miracle of more than 10-year writing experience. She appreciated all Miracle Team for their efforts specially Mrs. Khadija Naseer who composes the Urdu section.

Mr. Shams Jilani explained his affiliation with Miracle, including when Mr. Nusrat suggested the Name of Miracle in 2001 and the rest of the journey when Mr. Pirzada joined in Miracle at the time of financial crisis. He also appreciated Mr. Pirzada’s efforts from 2007 to this day. Mr. Jilani is an accomplished author of 20 books and currently he writes about current affairs in Miracle with

Role Models for Children: Parents vs Peers

Growing up, parents of today can safely say they learnt the ways of the world through their own parents and occasionally via their teachers, some odd TV shows everyone saw, and black and white forms of media. Our children, however, have a larger canvas where they absorb information from whether it’s right vs wrong, manners, trends, and their general behaviour guidelines. Our children have now become the parents. We are often relying on them to teach us how to use our phones, social media, TV settings, applications, and much more. Obedience from children has now been placed with asking children to do tasks we were told to do with consequences for refusal.

The aftermath of arguments, tantrums, and consequences now often reach our children’s friends for analysis compared to our generation accepting our parental unit’s voice as the guideline.

This can cause a lot of pressure for parents striving to be perfect to make sure their children are not stretched far from home. However, we do not need to be perfect. Our children have more barriers to cross than us and do ultimately look at us as their role models. We need to shift parenting style to strongly show through example.

1.Respect is Earned and Shown Parents and children alike, along with all humans on this planet, would like respect. Our children are watching us when we greet relatives, family members, grocery store clerks, elders, and even the odd bratty teenager. They are listening when we talk about our friends, the weather, teachers, husbands, wives, and everything in between.

They are learning how to value others and themselves from the way we talk. If we show them how to respect others and the respect we deserve in return, parenting and conflict instantly becomes easier.

2.Positive Communication Skills As our children get older, the communication between them and parents gets lower. We often wish our children would talk to us about their day, their friends, their troubles and successes which frequently never reaches us. We know our children are listening to us but do we know how our words are being received? They pay attention to our choice of words even when we don’t.

Parents need to make a conscious effort to practice positivity in our communication and teach our children the same; the benefits will be reaped for generations. We should actively try listening, not interrupting, using respectful tones, and

3.Positive Outlook on Life It might be difficult to comprehend at times, but the fear of failing a class or losing a friend can be devastating for our children. Place yourself in your child’s shoes – that feeling of getting a bad grade or not making the school’s sport teams can feel like a life or death situation. Our children are just learning the ways of life and this is their first time facing a challenge. By focusing on positive words and encouragement, we teach them confidence in the successes and failures that they will come across in their own life.

When we face our own challenges whether it’s small like burning dinner or big like crashing a car – that immediate reaction is what our children are paying attention.

4.Teach the Value of Health – Mental and Physical Our positive outlooks, words of encouragement, and actions can only do so much. Our children are exposed to millions of foreign scenarios when they step outside our home. Those challenges can manifest into long-term issues that we might not know. Focus on teaching your child what good health is in life. The importance of healthy eating can help your child in more ways than what we can list here. More importantly, teach them the value of health by reducing TV time, spend more time as a family, increase activities, and pay attention to their mental health.

If your child is struggling with their mental health, do not belittle them or sweep their issues under the rug. Take the initiative to show them how wonderful a strong mental and physical health feels like.

5.Work on Anger Management Your child can be the cutest infant on this plant, but all parents can be honest when we say our children can make you angry like you never thought possible. Be careful in your reaction to your child with the words you use and the actions you take. If your child makes a mistake, take the initiative to show them how to avoid it in the future and the seriousness of their mistake. Take a break, a deeper breath, walk away if you need to, but be careful about what you are instilling in your child. They will learn to face stress and misfortune in life from their parent’s reaction while they were growing up. Remember- you are all they know.

•Now make a list of all your weaknesses. Write down things you don’t like about your personality or you feel are negative traits.

•Look at your list of weaknesses. Think about ways you could see those weaknesses as positives. For example, say one of your weaknesses is that you think you talk too much. You could reframe this to a positive as, “It’s easy for me to express my opinion.” “I’m too sensitive” could be reframed as, “I have empathy for others.”

Stay true to yourself. To appreciate and accept yourself, it is important to know who you are. It may be helpful to identify your personal values. Knowing what is important to you and making decisions based on your personal values helps you be authentic and appreciate your true self. Make sure your values are your own and you are not simply taking on the values of your friends or family.

Figure out what is important to you.

•Explore which values are important to you and write them down. A concrete list of your values may help you recognize when you are being inauthentic to yourself and your values.

•You may feel like other people may not like you if they see the “real” you. It may be helpful for you to explore these feelings with someone you trust or by writing in a journal. Determine when you feel most yourself and when you feel the need to pretend to be someone

else, and explore the differences between those situations.

•If you feel you cannot be yourself around certain friends or family, perhaps because you fear being made fun of, then it may be a sign that you fear rejection about revealing your true self.

•The first step to changing your behavior is noticing when you do it. Pay attention and later, spend some time reflecting on what triggered your behavior in a particular situation. It may take a while for you to feel comfortable enough to be your authentic self around other people.

•Measure your growth by comparing yourself to who you were in the past instead. For example, think about your life 10 years ago. Has it changed? Have you acquired new skills, new relationships, or left dysfunctional life patterns behind? If you feel you have stagnated, take some steps to make some positive changes in your life.

•You can also look at your life now and imagine what you would like it to look like five or 10 years in the future. If you dream of getting a promotion at work in a few years, for example, what can you do today to start making progress towards your goals? Working toward a goal can help you to feel more selfworth and in control of your life.

Engaging Men & Boys to End Violence in the Family

ales hold most of the positions of authority in Muslim communities,and so they are going to need to take the lead in combating domestic violence both rhetorically and in practice. They must promote Islamic masculinity within communities and within families. When the community embraces the Islamic model of masculinity in which men struggle for women’s equality, then the original, gender-equal readings of the Qur’an will begin to be actualized.

When men are taught that women are full and equal partners in the community, and mold their experiences to mirror that knowledge, then they will embody the belief that men and women should be equal partners in all spheres of life. Once so embodied, it will make no sense for men to have power over women, and it will certainly make no sense for them to have the right to cause them any harm, just as men do not have power over, nor the right to harm, any other member of the community. What will be required from religious leaders and community members, then, is a two-pronged approach to combating domestic violence.

First, Muslim leaders must continue to teach their communities that there is no place in Islam for domestic violence, that the Qur’an and the Prophet condemn patriarchy, and that any readings to the contrary are corruptions of the original message. Second, the Islamic masculinity of the Prophet’s community must become part of religious rhetoric and practice, such that Muslim masculinity is understood to be a struggle against institutions and practices that disempower women. Muslim communities must affirm and model the Prophetic ethos in which women are empowered socially, economically, and politically. This will address the underlying pernicious attitudes that lead to women’s disempowerment in general, and to domestic violence in particular.

This will require regular conversations amongst community members and regular re-enforcement from community leaders.

To aid this process, we have provided twelve discussion topics through which Muslim communities can explore and discuss how better to emulate the Qur’anic and Prophetic model. They are in briefed: 1. The Qur’anic Message on Gender Equality The Qur’an links radical monotheism with the radical equality of all humans before God, regardless of social distinctions, like race, class, gender, etc. The Qur’an recognizes that people are created with varied lineages, cultures, and genders, but portrays these differences as a “test”......

2.The Qur’anic Message on Islamic Masculinity

Men are often taught that success is found in achieving more and more power, whether that power is primarily political, economic, or social. And so, men are frequently found competing with one another in a race for greater power....

3.The Prophetic Message on Gender Equality The Prophet’s example is replete with the promotion of gender equality. The very story of his prophethood is embedded in a story that subverts patriarchal gender norms. He met his first wife Khadījah as her employee.

She hired him, proposed to him, believed in his prophethood, was the first convert to Islam, and financially supported his prophetic mission.......

4. The Prophet’s Model of Masculinity Numerous ḥadīth document the Prophet’s vision of manhood; a vision that challenges widely held notions of masculinity.

The Prophet encouraged men to control their tempers, to struggle against their own desires, and to elevate the needs of others above themselves. He stressed the equality of all peoples, and that strong belief is reflected in a commitment to empower those in a weaker social position, including women..

5. Combating Corrupt Readings of the Scriptural Texts The Qur’an and the Prophet both came with a message of radical equality, breaking down artificial distinctions that humans impose upon one another. Instead of being treated differently based on race, class, gender, social standing, or lineage, the Islamic message in these texts taught that human beings are one family, and that the only thing that distinguishes individuals is Godconsciousness (taqwa).

6. Combating Hegemonic Masculinity in Muslim Traditions Islam brings with it a challenge to transcend base desires and to actualize one’s best self in order to realize a world of equality and justice. This aspiration runs counter to many deeply entrenched cultures in which the powerful dominate the weak, and in which men dominate women. Some of these cultural ideas about dominance have seeped into Muslim discourse, so that today some people assume that Islam itself encourages inequality and gender injustice 7. An Islamic Model for Managing Marital Disputes Before the advent of Islam, women were severely undervalued in Arabian society.

Perhaps the most dramatic demonstration of the status of women in pre-Islamic Arabian society was the practice of female infanticide. Girls were so undesirable and seen as such a burden to their families, that many families killed their daughters as soon as they were born. This practice is abhorred and prohibited in the Qur’an (Q. 81:8-9, 6:151). Instead, Islam – through the Qur’an and prophetic practice – offered a

It usually occurs in unsupervised areas where there are no adults. The biggest question about bullying though is why those specific kids are being bullied. It is my belief that it is because of the lack of friends or rank of popularity. Children like to rank each other in terms of popularity such as a flight of stairs. If you for some reason are the one who is ranking others, you would obviously put yourself at the top and rank the people who are your

friends higher. Being on the top makes it feel natural to pick on the person at the bottom. The people along the line just follow because they are either hoping to maintain their positions or get a higher one. As you can see, bullying is quite layered and as we focus on why the person who is being bullied is being bullied, we can also look at why the person who is bullying is bullying. In my opinion, the bully usually has a complex childhood which leads to the bullying behavior. Mostly they have been bullied themselves in the past, but it could also be due to having dysfunctional families or sometimes bullies can’t regulate their emotions.

8. Islam and Domestic Violence Some Muslims argue that husbands have the right to physically discipline their wives. Islamophobes latch onto this idea and denigrate Islam and Muslims by saying that Muslims permit wife-beating. However, Muslim scholars have made a strong case that Islam does not permit domestic violence of any sort, including intimate partner violence. If all humans have equal worth before God and we are called on to treat humans equally irrespective of race, class, 16 and gender, then it makes no sense for men to have arbitrary power and privilege over their wives, and it is certainly unacceptable for husbands to hit their wives. Even socially conservative and religiously orthodox countries like Saudi Arabia have instituted domestic violence laws, prohibiting domestic violence of any sort.

The Prophet embodied the message of the Qur’an in this respect, never hitting his wives and instructing men to not hit their wives. Violence does not resolve problems, and in fact, only escalates marital disputes.

In contrast, the Qur’an calls on couples to communicate, be reflective, and to deescalate conflict.

9. Islam and Women’s Access to the Mosque Perhaps the most radically egalitarian space in Islam is the mosque. The archetypal mosque is in Mecca, where men and women stand side-by-side and pray to the House of God. The idea of standing side-by-side, equal in humanity, equal before God, without any hierarchy between humans is a powerful idea. Women and men stand next to each other, erasing gender hierarchies.

The rich and poor stand next to each other, erasing class hierarchies. People of different races stand next to each other, erasing racial hierarchies. In standing next to each other in prayer, Muslims understand that social differences and institutionalized discriminatory practices are aberrations that ought to be resisted and fought against.

The Prophet’s mosque in Medina was a central communal space, it was ringed by the living quarters of Muhammad’s wives, so that his wives had full access to the mosque.

Men and women prayed without a barrier separating one another. The fact that this equality between women and men was architecturally captured is significant. Today, many mosques are male-only spaces that do not even accommodate women. Many more relegate women to marginal spaces, where they are unseen and unheard, architecturally demonstrating how little women are valued in such communities. When men pray in spaces that discriminate against women, they enable and participate in the discrimination of women. It is necessary

for everyone, but especially for men and boys who are privileged in the very spaces that disadvantage women to open up maleexclusive spaces and make women welcome and equal participants in them.

10.Islam and the Political Empowerment of Women The Qur’an broke down any hierarchy amongst men and women in political leadership by stating that women and men are “protectors, one of another” (9:71).

Women and men are thereby granted equal political authority, as was demonstrated in the practice of the Prophet. Whether it was going out of his way to seek the counsel of women, or taking their oaths of citizenship, or appointing women as prayer leaders, the Prophet made sure to have women prominently represented....

11. Islam and the Economic Empowerment of Women Patriarchal arrangements hurt men and women in various ways. The self-serving logic of patriarchy undervalues women’s economic potential, prohibiting them from participating in economic enterprises and then seeing them as financial burdens because they cannot contribute to the household economy. The financial burden that women represent in societies where they are barred from participating in financial and public realms is one of the main reasons that women were killed at birth in pre-Islamic Arabia......

12. Islam and Women’s Right to DecisionMaking Islam gave women the right to make independent decisions in all aspects of life.

Women have the full right to choose their spouses, control their finances, be educated, work, and socialize without the approval of anyone, male or female. As the ‘walking Qur’an’, the Prophet would not make unilateral decisions in his family; rather, he would respect and honor women’s rights to make their own decisions for themselves and to have joint decision-making power in the family. Women would debate with the Prophet on the finer points of Islamic law, and he would often abide by their arguments and decisions. The Prophet fought his malecentered society to give women these rights, and as heirs to the Prophet, believers must also ensure that women have the power to make independent, meaningful decisions for themselves, for their families, and for their communities.

Govt confirms Pakistan will be placed on FATF terror financing watchlist in June

By:Naveed Siddiqui nding the nearly week-long confusion over Pakistan’s placement on a ‘grey list’ of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the Foreign Office confirmed on Wednesday that in June the country is set to be added to the watchlist of countries where banned militant outfits have allegedly been raising funds.Speaking at a weekly news briefing, FO spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal revealed that a decision to place Pakistan on the watchlist was taken at the FATF plenary held in Paris last week. He, however, ruled out the possibility that Pakistan could even be placed on the international watchdog’s blacklist over a lack of compliance.

An action plan to eradicate terrorist financing is being prepared and will accordingly be shared with the international body, he said.“Pakistan will be assigned to the ‘grey list’ in June, once an action plan has been mutually negotiated,” the spokesman said, adding that Pakistan will cooperate with FATF in every possible way. Dr Faisal said reports claiming that Pakistan will be transferred from the ‘grey list’ to the blacklist in June are not true as the FATF website clearly demarcates the countries in the blacklist as those which are non-cooperative with the body. In response to a question, the spokesman said the FATF has highlighted certain deficiencies in Pakistan’s anti-money laundering and anti-terror financing regimes.

He said Pakistan has already taken steps to remove the deficiencies in these areas and cited the presidential ordinance that was quietly passed days before the FATF plenary to amend the anti-terror legislation in order to include all UN-listed individuals and groups in the national listings of proscribed outfits and persons.“We will take further actions for addressing any remaining deficiencies,” Dr Faisal said.

All matters related to FATF will be dealt with by the finance ministry, the FO spokesman said, adding that he could not

comment on FATF’s internal deliberations as they are confidential.

The 37-nation FATF plenary held its first meeting on Pakistan on February 20 where China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which was representing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), opposed the US-led move to place Pakistan on the watchlist. But the US pushed for an unprecedented second discussion on Pakistan, held on February 22.

By then, Washington had convinced Riyadh to give up its support to Pakistan in return for a full FATF membership.

This left only two – China and Turkey – in the Pakistan camp, one less than the required number of three members to stall a move.

At this stage, the Chinese informed Islamabad that they were opting out as they did not want to “lose face by sup-

porting a move that’s doomed to fail”, an official source had told Dawn. “Pakistan appreciated the Chinese position and conveyed its gratitude to Turkey for continuing to support Islamabad against all odds,” the source added.

Pakistan was first put on the FATF grey list in 2012 but was removed in 2015, after the FATF certified that Islamabad had done enough to counter terror financing.

Now, Pakistan will have to follow the same process that it did in 2015, starting with an action plan that Islamabad is required to submit in May. If the FATF approves the action plan in June, it will make a formal announcement about placing Pakistan on the grey list. Should Islamabad fail to submit an action plan, or if the FATF does not accept it, the group can place Pakistan on its blacklist, along with North Korea and Iran. Source: dawn.com

Kevin Pietersen’s crucial 34-ball 48 helped Quetta Gladiators chase down the modest 135run target set by Islamabad United in the ninth fixture of the Pakistan Super League 2018 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
