New South Asia geography

HE contours of a new economic and political geography within South Asia are clearly emerging on the map with enhanced connectivity among China, Pakistan, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia. This transition is already having a remarkable influence on the thinking patterns, politics, cultures and economic developments in this region. While the traditional South Asian political elite remains in a perpetual denial captured by populist internal dynamics, the subcontinent has already disintegrated once again. For the two South Asian nuclear powers, it is perhaps the right time to get out of their historical baggage and start working on dealing with the new realities and models of engagement with multiple players in the next many years to come. There are fundamental foreign, economic, security and overall public policy shifts which are bound to emerge as a result of the new regional alliances. For the first time, this new geography is primarily driven by the dynamics of economic proximity rather than a security-led paradigm which dominated the region for many decades. China’s flagship Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the strategic China Pakistan Economic Corridor have laid solid foundations. The success of CPEC as a transformational investment is critical for both China and Pakistan to demonstrate their ability to steer this region towards a shared prosperity.

For Pakistan, three areas of structural reforms need urgent attention for managing an extraordinary transition.

Pakistan is struggling to design and implement structural reforms to increase its institutional capacity for maximising the CPEC out-

comes for the benefit of its over 100 million young labour force. CPEC should not be seen as merely an infrastructure investment, it must reflect President Xi’s vision of tackling corruption, cleaner environment and uplifting the quality of life for the marginalised. For Pakistan, three areas of structural reforms need urgent attention for managing this extraordinary transition. Firstly, Pakistan will have to strengthen the structure and orientation of its foreign service and economic ministries. The existing system has little understanding of the already changed and continuously evolving global economic landscape. Several countries have taken progressive steps by merging trade and foreign policy objectives. Pakistan needs to act on the same lines and develop a consensus on mediumterm strategic economic growth goals to be owned and delivered by the highest office. The diplomats must be equipped with adequate skills to articulate the country’s economic value proposition to the region and the rest of the world. Secondly, there is a need to mainstream the role of private sector in the new economic growth strategy where proximity will have a central role. The country should be willing to let go the sectors which have flourished on patronage and state protection. Pakistan’s competiveness has nose-dived over the past couple of decades when compared with its peers. The old school of import substitution by protecting local industrial base has led to the creation of a classic model of crony capitalism where such firms will never be able to compete with emerging Asia. If a level-playing policy environment is created, the private sector

can enhance productivity and ensure job creation by being part of the global value chains. Thirdly, investment in regional knowledge networks will be crucial to sustain Pakistan’s key position in the new regional markets. Pakistan must benefit from China’s phenomenal research and development expertise in all spheres and link up its universities and think tanks with south and west Asian neigbours. It is the exchange of skilled youth which will generate ideas and strengthen the regional integration for shared growth and stability. Unfortunately, India and Pakistan have missed the boat on leveraging their phenomenal economic potential of ideal proximity and a combined market of over one billion people. According to some informed modelling and estimates, the two markets could have reached $20 billion volume of trade and investment. Both countries have themselves to blame as the pace of change does not wait for players who fail to demonstrate their ability to resolve conflicts and continue to defy adherence to values of a responsible neighbourhood. Having consistently failed to engage constructively, both countries will have to settle with two separate economic groupings in the emerging Asian century. While India has already started investing in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Pakistan will now be looking to integrate more with the markets of Iran, western China and Central Asia through Afghanistan in the coming years. This new economic geography will not only test overall foreign relations but will perhaps also set parameters for a new model of responsible engagement between India and Pakistan in the long term. The fundamental point in question

for Pakistan is its ability to come up with an institutional response to these rather challenging developments which will put pressure on Pakistan to open up borders with Afghanistan and Iran in the coming years. The security lens will have to be widened to economic, cyber and intercultural spheres. Perhaps the weakest link is the economic policy structure which is marred with lack of capacity, coordination, leadership, exposure and imagination. A cosy and noninclusive relationship between the finance ministry and international financial institutions has only resulted in unproductive debt burden and lucrative jobs for retired bureaucrats. The global financial institutions are becoming irrelevant in terms of providing quality advice in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment. Long-term multilateral loans should be utilised for financially viable projects rather than the so-called policy-based budget support. Pakistan needs to quickly initiate a progressive model of economic reforms in line with the changing regional and global dynamics. This will not only ensure sustainability of economic growth but will also put Pakistan in a leadership position in the new South Asian economic geography. The political fragmentation and flux is the new normal and leadership must find ways to insulate key economic reforms from political volatility and elite capture. It is the economic repositioning of Pakistan in the new Asian century which will attract capital and innovation from around the world. Without the law of the land the streets would be filled by the criminals. Similarly, without obedient to the Creator and HIS Divine/Sharia law mankind would turn into devils, Daesh and Demons. Mankind must respect the sanctity of the sacred months by adhering to all the commandments of Allah Creator-GOD, including 10 commandments given by Prophet Mo-

ses (AS). Any religion without HIS commandments is not a true Scriptural religion but a man-made cult. To separate the evil/haram from good/Halal one needs to understand the only One Divine Authority. Just as one P.M. or one President at a time. The first step in such growth must be through ethics and moral conduct, the reciprocal rights of parents and children a sense of personal responsibility to humanity of all color, culture and religion, Justice, awareness of the creation including Animals and most of all a sense of presence of Creator. Accepting HIS presence can only be proven by HIS worship only and by obedient to HIS commandments. PM Abbasi holds 2-hour long meeting with CJP Justice Saqib Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi held a meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar at Supreme Court building here on Tuesday. Earlier, SC Spokesman confirmed the meeting will take place at Supreme Court building in the evening today. Sources said PM Abbasi arrived at Supreme Court building without protocol. Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar welcomed PM Abbasi at the Judges’ gate of the apex court. The premier and the chief justice held one-on-one meeting for two hours, sources said. The meeting was not scheduled till 5:00 PM in the evening, sources said and added that there were reports PM Abbasi and the Chief Justice discussed judicial reforms. PM Abbasi and CJP Justice Saqib Nisar also exchanged views over better interaction among the state institutions, upcoming

general elections, delimitation of constituencies, caretaker government setup besides legal and constitutional matters, the sources added.Meanwhile, Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Shah has said the meeting between the prime minister and chief justice was not an unprecedented move, such meeting had also taken place in the past as well. He, however, said the timing of the meeting was inappropriate and it will raise speculations as several cases against the government were being heard in the apex court. The meeting was arranged on the request of the prime minister, received through the Attorney General for Pakistan, said a Supreme Court press release.The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere in the chamber of the Chief Justice of Pakistan at 7:00 pm. The prime minister showed keen interest in providing all possible assistance in revamping the judicial system of Pakistan as visualized by the chief justice. The prime minister assured the chief justice that the government would provide all resources to judiciary in order to enable it to provide easy, speedy and inexpensive justice to the masses. The prime minister also informed the chief justice that the Council of Common Interest had approved the water policy which would help in fruition of chief justice’s efforts in that direction. The chief justice assured the prime minister that the judiciary would continue to perform its constitutional duties independently, fairly, transparently, without fear or favour and strictly in accordance with law. NATO expels 7 Russian officials, praises response to Salisbury poisoning

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says the military alliance will expel seven staffers from the Russian mission due to the nerve-agent poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain. He said NATO will also deny the pending accreditation request of three other workers at the Russian mission. Russia, which is not a member of NATO, will still have a diplomatic mission of 20 people at alliance headquarters in Brussels, and that will allow Russia to keep essential contacts with NATO members, Stoltenberg said. He said “we will continue to work for meaningful dialogue” with Russia, but the measure announced Tuesday will “send a very clear message” to what he called the first incident of a nerve agent being used inside a NATO territory. After more than 20 nations, including Canada, expelled Russian diplomats on Monday in response to the nerve agent attack on a former Russian military intelligence officer and his daughter, Ireland and Australia followed suit with similar measures on Tuesday. On Tuesday Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his country was expelling two Russian diplomats whom he described as undeclared intelligence officers. They have been given seven days to leave Australia. Turnbull slammed Russia for “reckless and deliberate” conduct that harms global security and violates rules against the use of chemical weapons. Ireland also announced it was ordering one Russian diplomat to leave. Foreign Minister Simon Coveney called the nerve-agent attack on Skripal and his daughter a “shocking and abhorrent” use of chemical weapons. Britain had expelled 23 Russian officials before the coordinated international response. Some 140

Russian officials have been censured overall, according to Stoltenberg, representing 25 nations. The Skripals remain hospitalized in critical condition after they were found unconscious on March 4 in the English city of Salisbury, where the former spy lived. Britain says they were poisoned with a Sovietmade military-grade nerve agent known as Novichok. Officials in Moscow, who deny responsibility for the attack, condemned the expulsions again on Tuesday but have not yet announced steps of retaliation. Speaking at a conference in Uzbekistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters that a reaction will follow, because Russia “will not tolerate such rude behaviour.” Lavrov also speculated that the United States might have coerced some of the European countries into expelling Russian diplomats. The U.S. announced some 60 officials would be forced to leave, as well as the closing of the Russian consulate in Seattle. U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to publicly comment, but according to the White House, he spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in separate calls Tuesday. The leaders “expressed support” for the co-ordinated move and “praised” the announcement by other Western allies who have followed suit. Earlier on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow was working on a “tough response” to the expulsions. Top EU lawmaker Guy Verhofstadt wants the European Union to sharpen sanctions on the Kremlin if necessary but also insists on a broader strategy to reach out to Russians in general. The leader of the liberal ALDE group in Belgium backed the expulsions of diplomatic staff by EU nations but said “that’s not enough.” In an interview with The Associated Press, he said that economic co-operation and visa liberalization were just as important as a clampdown on President Vladimir Putin and his closest allies. He compared it to the Helsinki detente process during the Cold War when channels were being kept open despite the fact that both sides had hundreds of nuclear warheads pointed at one another. UN chief urges Saudi prince to seek political solution in Yemen

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday presented a $930 million cheque to the UN for humanitarian aid in Yemen as the UN chief pushed for an end to the war in which Riyadh leads a military coalition. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres thanked Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the contribution, but stressed that the war in Yemen requires a political solution, and not just a humanitarian response. “There is no humanitarian solution for humanitarian problems,” Guterres said after receiving the cheque, which also came from the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates plays a major role in the coalition, which intervened militarily three years ago to support Yemen’s government against Huthi rebels. Civilian casualties from coalition air strikes have drawn criticism from

rights groups, and in October the UN placed the alliance on a “blacklist” for killing and maiming children. Riyadh insists the coalition respects its obligations under international humanitarian law.“The solution is political and we are entirely at your disposal to work to find a solution” that will “end the suffering in Yemen,” Guterres said. The UN is making a fresh push for peace talks in Yemen, where the coalition acted to support the internationally-recognised government after the Huthis seized the capital. About 10,000 Yemenis have been killed in the war. CCTV shows Sri Lankan police aid anti-Muslim riots

Police and politicians joined anti-Muslim riots that rocked Sri Lanka’s Kandy district this month, according to witnesses, officials and CCTV footage reviewed by Reuters. Muslim mosques, homes and businesses have been destroyed as mobs ran amok for three days in Kandy, the central highlands district previously known for its diversity and tolerance. Sri Lanka’s law and order minister accused the Podujana Peramuna right-wing party for the “well organized” violence. The role of police and some local Buddhist politicians in the Islamophobia rampage points to the depth of the problem that Muslims face in Sri Lanka. It also shows that the government has no control over some of its police and security personnel, and that the violence was more than a spontaneous outbreak fueled by fringe Buddhist fighters and hate-speech spread on social media. Victims and witnesses, whose accounts were partly backed by CCTV footage seen by Reuters, described members of an elite paramilitary police unit, the Special Task Force (STF), assaulting a Muslim imam and leaders. Local STF commanders declined to comment. “They came to attack,” said A H Ramees, an imam at a mosque where worshippers say they were beaten by police who were supposed to be protecting them. “They were shouting. There was filthy language. They said all the problems were because of us, that we were like terrorists.” Ruwan Gunasekera, a spokesman for the national police force, including the STF, said a special investigation unit was “probing the deficiencies of the police in the incident”. A second unit was examining the role of political actors, he said. The riots were the latest example of rising Buddhist nationalism and Islamophobia in the region and have unnerved Sri Lanka’s multi-ethnic coalition government, which removed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an election in 2015, according to analysts and two sources familiar with the government’s deliberations. The government declared a state of emergency and blocked social media platforms for a week to control the unrest. Buddhists make up about 70 percent of Sri Lanka’s 21 million people. Tamils, most of whom are Hindu, account for 13 percent, while Muslims make up about 9 percent of the population. Sri Lanka’s Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara has said the violence in Kandy was “well organised” and pointed the finger at members of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), a political party backed by Rajapaksa that scored a huge victory in local elections last month. At a press conference flanked by senior leaders earlier this month, Rajapaksa said the accusations were politically motivated. According to him, the government fomented the violence to “get the Muslim vote” and to distract from its inadequacies. An excerpt of CCTV footage from the first day of attacks, reviewed by Reuters, showed police letting a large group of men through the cordon protecting the Noor Jummah mosque in Digana, a Kandy township. The men rush into a multi-story building opposite the mosque. A local SLPP politician, Samantha Perera, can be seen pointing at the higher floors of the building. Perera confirmed he was the person shown in the footage. He said he was trying to calm the rioters and only found out later the mosque had been attacked. “I am a good Buddhist. I am not instigating violence against anybody,” he told Reuters. Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said Perera was under investigation for “attacking Muslim-owned shops and mosques with stones”. At least three other SLPP politicians, including a national politician, were being investigated and another SLPP councillor has been arrested for setting fire to a mosque, he said. All deny any involvement in the violence. “There’s a political motive to discredit me, Mahinda Rajapaksa and the party,” Perera said. Islamophobia has surged in Sri Lanka since 2009, when a long civil war against Tamil fighters was brutally end-

ed by Rajapaksa, amid charges by a United Nations panel of experts of human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings by the military and STF. As in Myanmar, from where 700,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled an army crackdown in recent months, Buddhist hardliners in Sri Lanka have argued that Islam is a threat to the Buddhist way of life. At about the same time, a local Muslim politician, Abdul Saleem Mohamad Fazil, and a friend, Mohamad Faizal, were also attacked by members of the elite police unit, according to the victims and a witness, Father Christy Paul, the prelate at Digana’s Catholic church. “Three STFs came through the back entrance of the house and started beating us,” said Fazil, who suffered a deep head wound and said he spent a night in prison after being refused medical treatment. “They grabbed some bottles from the landing and put them in a bag and said we were making petrol bombs.” Father Christy said he heard the men’s screams and saw the police hitting them with batons. The men were cowering on the ground and not offering any resistance to the police, he said. B.C. makes changes to speculation tax after criticism from homeowners

British Columbia is trying to more directly target urban areas with changes it announced Monday to a proposed tax on property speculation after some municipalities demanded exemptions and the Opposition accused the New Democrats of grabbing family assets. Finance Minister Carol James is also adjusting the tax rate after first announcing details of the levy in the budget last month. The changes would create a number of exemptions and shift which areas of the province would be covered by the tax. Under the details announced by James, the tax would apply to properties in Metro Vancouver, Kelowna, West Kelowna, Nanaimo-Lantzville, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission and the Capital Regional District around Victoria on southern Vancouver Island, excluding the Gulf Islands and Juan de Fuca. The speculation tax is intended to improve housing affordability in areas where the need is most acute, while exempting rural cabins and vacation homes, James said. “We have a responsibility as a government to ensure that hard working British Columbians can afford to call this province home,” she added. The changes are due to be introduced in legislation this fall. “Over 99 per cent of British Columbians will not pay the tax,” said James. “Only those who hold multiple properties and leave them empty in our province’s major cities will be asked to contribute.” In 2018, the rate for all properties subject to the tax would be set at 0.5 per cent of a property’s assessed value, regardless of whether the owner is foreign, Canadian or from B.C. ing in 2019, the tax rate would be set at two per cent for foreign investors and extended family members. For Canadian citizens and permanent residents who do not live in British Columbia, the tax rate would rise to one per cent of a property’s assessed value next year. B.C. residents with second properties are also eligible for tax credits valued up to $400,000, said James. The tax credit is meant to offset the tax of $2,000 on a property valued under $400,000. James said people who rent out their second property for at least six months of the year will not have to pay the speculation tax. “The speculation tax focuses on people who are treating our housing market like a stock market,” she said. James said the government estimates the tax will generate about $200 million in revenue next year. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson said the minority NDP government appears to be taking a trial and error approach to tax policy, which does not inspire confidence. “They seem to think they can attack speculation with a tax that is not about speculation,” he said. Green Leader Andrew Weaver said the changes “go a long way” to dealing with his party’s concerns about the tax. “In particular, the government’s policy must target speculation and empty homes in our urban centres without undue adverse effects on rural areas and on British Columbians who aren’t speculators,” he said in a news release. “They make it much more targeted and limit the effects on British Columbians with vacation homes.” Source: Financial Post

North Korea’s Kim shows unity with China’s Xi in first foreign trip

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was treated to a lavish welcome by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a secretive trip to Beijing as both sides seek to repair frayed ties ahead of landmark summits with Seoul and Washington. On his first trip abroad since taking power, Kim and his wife were met with honour guards and a banquet hosted by Xi, according to state media, which confirmed the “unofficial” visit on Wednesday only after Kim had returned to North Korea. The two men held talks at the stately Great Hall of the People during which they hailed their nations’ historic relations, with Kim pledging that he was “committed to denuclearisation” on the Korean peninsula, according to China’s Xinhua news agency. “There is no question that my first foreign visit would be to the Chinese capital,” Kim said, according to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency. “This is my solemn duty as someone who should value and continue the DPRK-PRC relations through generations.” KCNA said Xi accepted an invitation to visit Pyongyang, which would be his first trip to the North Korean capital since he took power in 2012. The two men had not met since Kim took over after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in 2011, and relations have been strained as China has backed a raft of UN sanctions against Pyongyang over its nuclear and mis-

sile tests. But Xi underscored the importance of developing ties, saying it was “a strategic choice and the only right choice” and that he was willing to maintain frequent contact with Kim “under the new circumstances”, according to Xinhua. Xi and Kim shook hands and sat across from each other at a long conference table, both flanked by officials, at the Great Hall of the People, according to television images which showed the North Korean leader taking meticulous notes. Later, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, waved goodbye while Kim and his spouse, Ri Sol Ju, smiled as they left in a black car. Chinese and North Korean state media said the visit started on Sunday and ended0 Wednesday. Analysts said Xi likely wanted to see Kim to ensure North Korea does not cut a deal with US President Donald Trump that hurts Chinese interests during a summit expected to be held in May. Beijing had appeared sidelined by Pyongyang’s approaches to Seoul and Washington, but Kim’s visit puts China firmly back at the centre of the diplomatic game. “It shows that at this crucial juncture, Kim and Xi believed that it was time to seize the opportunity to consult,” Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, told AFP.

The City of Burnaby is taking its fight against construction of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project to Canada’s highest court, after lower courts and a national board rejected their challenge. On Tuesday, Mayor Derek Corrigan said the city intends to ask the Supreme Court of Canada to hear its challenge of a National Energy Board decision that came down in December. That ruling said Kinder Morgan is not required to comply with two sections of Burnaby’s bylaws on land and tree clearances as it expands the pipeline, which will triple the amount of diluted bitumen and other oil products moving between the Edmonton-area and port facilities in Burnaby. The city filed for leave to appeal the NEB decision in February, but the Federal Court of Appeal denied its application on Friday. The court dismissed Burnaby’s filing without reasons, but Corrigan said the judges should have explained why the provincial government was not being allowed to protect B.C.’s environmental interests. “Very clearly, it’s something the [lower] court should have dealt with,” the mayor said in a statement. “We will, therefore, now ask the Supreme Court of Canada to perform this function.” Corrigan says the city has asked its legal counsel to file the appeal application within 60 days. Thousands of protesters have rallied against the $7.4-billion project at Kinder Morgan’s Westridge Marine and Burnaby terminals over the past weeks, according to

RCMP. By early Saturday evening, Protect the Inlet spokesperson Virginia Cleaveland said 58 protesters had been arrested for violating a court-ordered injunction, bringing the week’s total to 173 arrests. Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and NDP MP Kennedy Stewart were among those arrested and briefly taken into custody on Friday. Activists had planned to continue daily protests until Monday, the environmental deadline for Kinder Morgan to finish clearing trees in the area before migratory birds begin nesting. On Friday, the company said preparatory work for the project had been completed in time to meet the deadline. The company said crews were finishing clean-up work such as removing salvageable timber and waste wood. The world is facing a water crisis, highlighting a big gap in access to clean water and sanitation between the wealthy and economically disadvantaged, according to a WaterAid study. Entitled The Water Gap - The State of the World’s Water, the water access advocacy group’s report was released on Thursday to mark World Water Day. “One in nine people around the world do not have access to clean water close to home,” and 60 percent of people live “in areas of water stress, where the water supply cannot or will not continue to meet demand,” the report said. That amounts to 844 million people who have difficulties accessing clean water. And “wherever you are in the world, it’s the poorest and least powerful who are most often without clean water”, the report said. Eritrea, Papua New Guinea and Uganda are the three countries with the lowest access to clean water. In Eritrea, only 19 percent of people have access to clean water close to home. In Papua New Guinea, the number is 37 percent. Lack of access to clean water has deadly health consequences, especially for children. The report said that roughly 290,000 children under the age of five die as a result. “It’s deplorable that nearly 300,000 children under five years old die each year from diarrhoeal illnesses directly linked to dirty water, lack of decent toilets and poor hygiene,” Tim Wainwright, WaterAid’s chief executive, says in the report. “We all need to step up the urgency around the water and sanitation crisis as current progress is nowhere near fast enough.” South Africa’s city of Cape Town

has served as a siren for organisations tracking the world’s water crisis. The city is facing an unprecedented drought that began in 2015. City officials say people should use no more than 50 litres of tap water a day. Cape Town relies on reservoirs that are replenished solely by rainwater. Observers say climate change is responsible for the lack of rain and other cities should be prepared. On July 9, the city will reach “day zero” and be forced to shut off tap water for homes. Only communal taps will have running water. “Cape Town is a wake-up call, reminding us that access to water, our most precious resource, is increasingly under threat,” said Jonathan Farr, WaterAid’s senior policy analysts on water security and climate. WaterAid said the global community should recognise that UN global goals, which list clean water and sanitation, “are everyone’s responsibility to deliver”. This could be accomplished by allocating resources from taxes and tariffs while increasing the amount and proportion of aid for water, sanitation, and promoting propoor policies that ensure access to water for everyone, the group said.Source: Al-Jazeera

The Prophetic (PBUH) Ascension and Humanism

By: Macksood Aftab One of the most remarkable events in the history of the world was the Night Journey and Ascension. This Journey is not only spectacular because of what it meant to the Prophet (s), but also for what it means for rest of humanity. According to the accounts in the Quran and Prophetic narrations, the Prophet (s) was taken overnight from Mecca to Jerusalem,. “Holy is He Who carried His servant by night from the Holy Mosque (in Mecca) to the farther Mosque (in Jerusalem.) (Quran 17:1) There he led all the other Prophets (including Abraham, Moses, David and Jesus) in prayers. After which he began the Ascension, seeing many amazing things including heaven and hell, and meeting many of the prior Prophets on the way. Finally, (as described by al-Mubarakpuri in the Sealed Nector) “he was then presented to the Divine Presence and experienced the thrill of witnessing the Divine Glory and Manifestation at the closest possible propinquity.” God describes his astonishing experience during the Ascension in the Quran, While he was in the highest part of the horizon: Then he approached and came closer, And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or nearer; So did God convey to His Servant what He (meant) to convey. The Prophet’s mind and heart in no way falsified that which he saw. Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw?

(Quran 53:7-12).For the lover of God there could be no greater pleasure than an invitation by the beloved. It is a returning to God sought by humankind ever since the primordial covenant in which they were asked by God: “Am I not your Lord?” and they replied “Yes! We do testify!” (Quran 7:172). The Prophet (s) was granted what the rest of humanity is longing for. All of this happened within a matter of a few seconds of earthly time, and then he was back in Mecca. The pagan Meccans mocked him at the unbelievable “fairy tale” he recounted. For his early followers this was a test, would they trust the Prophet (s)? Abu Bakr, his closest companion at the time, passed without hesitation by stating, “if Muhammad (saw) said it, then it is true.” Trust in the Prophet (s) was to become the test of faith. The unique honor of this mag-

nificent journey attests to the Prophet’s (s) status as the beloved of God and the perfect human being. He is the model for the rest of humanity to emulate. Through him, however, the rest of humankind is also elevated, as one of theirs is honored by the Creator and Sustainer of the worlds. For Iqbal, this humanism is reinforced by the actual nature of the prophetic experience while at the climax of his journey. At the point of the highest ascent, where he is in the closest proximity to his Lord, Muhammad (s) maintains his individuality. The Quran describes his state as: ‘His eye turned not aside, nor did it wander‘ (Quran 53:17). The Prophet (s) did not find himself losing his own identity in God but rather he was able to, in Iqbal’s words, “retain full self-possession, even in the case of a direct contact with the all-embracing Ego.” Oth-

ers, as Iqbal writes in poetic form, such as Moses on Mount Sinai were unable to absorb God’s majesty and collapsed:‘Moses fainted away by a mere surface illumination of Reality. Thou seest the very substance of Reality with a smile!’ In this Prophetic achievement, there is great hope for humanity. There is a message of humanism, of possibility and of great potential. The heavens and earth, even God himself is within reach for those who aim to perfect themselves and seek the Almighty. The journey, however, does not end with the Prophet’s (s) experience of God. It continues with his return to earth. He returns with a renewed sense of purpose to better humanity with his Divine message and beautiful character. We learn then that a spiritual return to God is not sufficient; rather it is merely a necessary landmark in man’s larger journey to engage with the world around us to affect positive change. A change, man is capable of, which will ultimately lead to God’s pleasure. May the peace, blessings and prayers of God be upon His beloved Prophet (s), the final Messenger and our Master Muhammad (s). The Mi`raj of Holy Prophet (saw) took place in three parts, each corresponding to the tri-dimension persona of Holy Prophet (saw). The first part of the journey was from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa as is mentioned in the first verse of Surah Bani Isra`il. This part of the Journey was to be known as the Isra. This journey was related to the outward physical dimension of Holy Prophet`s (saw) bashariyyah [Humanity]. Holy Prophet (saw) came with a bodily form to this earth so that he may give us i.e. Mankind, fayd [blessings] in the form of hidayah [guidance]. This mi`raj relating to the bashariyyah was concluded when Holy Prophet (saw) led the anbiyah [prophets] in prayer and became their Imam. The second part of the journey, which is known as the Mi`raj, was from Masjid alAqsa to Sidrat al-Muntaha. This journey was in relation to the ruhanniyyah [spirituality] and nuraniyyah [the light] of Holy Prophet (saw). It was here at the point of Sidrat alMuntahah that Holy Prophet (saw) became Sayyid al-Nur [Master of the Lights]; he became the leader of the whole of Alim al-

Khalq [World of Creation] from the bashr [mankind] to the malaikah [angels]. The last and final part of the journey was from Sidrat al-Muntaha to Qaba Qawsain aw Adnah; this part of the journey according to Shaykh Nizamuddin Awliyah is called I`raj. The I`raj is related to the haqiqah [reality] of the Holy Prophet (saw), which is known only to Allah and his Prophet (saw). It was at this point that the mi`raj of Holy Prophet (saw) in relation to the tri-dimensions was completed. Here at qaba qawsain that Holy Prophet (saw) met Allah and had seen him with not

only with his eyes but also with his heart. In the remaining parts of the lecture Shaykhul-Islam went through many subtle points relating to the night journey. For example, a tafsir of the verses of Surah Tin was given. This tafsir [commentary] was unique, as Shaykh-ul-Islam was the first muffasir [Commentator of the Holy Qur`an] to relate these verses to Mi`raj. In these verses Allah takes oaths by the tin [fig], zaytun [olive], tursinin [Mount Sinai] and the Balad al-ameen [The sanctified land]. The fig here relates to Sham [Syria], whilst

the olive relates to the land of Falastene [Palestine], the Mount Sinai is the mountain in which Musa (as) talked directly to Allah, and the sanctified land is Makkah, from where the night journey started from. All these things that Allah has taken oaths from are all related to the Isra. The journey started from Makkah, and on the way Holy Prophet (saw) stopped at Syria, which is where Ibrahim (as) was buried; he (saw) then went to Bayt al-Lahm [Bethlehem], which was where Isa (as) is buried, in Palestine. And then Holy Prophet (saw) visited Mount Sinai, where Musa (as) talked to Allah and had received Shariah. All of these stops are significant as they signify that Holy Prophet (saw) is the master of the whole of mankind, and that the Shariah of Ibrahim (as), Musa (as), and Isa (as) is contained in the Shariah of Holy Prophet (saw), so if anyone wants to follow the Shariah of any one of these prophets then they must accept the Shariah of Holy Prophet (saw), who is the leader of all the prophets and messengers.All praise is to Allah; this gathering was a great success in which over a thousand people participated. May Allah give us more opportunities to take part in such gatherings the future. Ameen

The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) celebrates Isra’ and Mi^raj 1439 in style.

The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects celebrated and revived the memory of the great miracle with a great celebration at Surrey Arts Centre on March 25th. This year’s celebration was under the banner of “Jerusalem a sacred destination between Makkah and heavens” and was beautifully prepared, presented and organized by AICP and renowned Islamic Chants Group hosting an entertaining event enjoyed by more than 300 diverse attendees and participants of the Muslim community. Recitation from the Blessed Qur’an commenced this blessed occasion, orations in both Arabic and English languages were given by Shaykh Naser Ghanem. He emphasized the fact that Allah granted His Messenger this great miracle of Isra’ and Mi^raj to honor the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam by revealing to him the wonders of the upper world to increase his honor and rank. From al-Masjid al-Aqsa the Mi^raj (Ascension) started; the Prophet ascended to the heaven on a staircase called‘al-mirqat’ which is typically veiled from human eyes. The Messenger of Allah, then saw Prophet Adam in the first heaven, who welcomed him and made supplication for him for good things.

The Messenger of Allah ascended to the second heaven where he saw Prophets ^Isa and Yahya. The Messenger of Allah, ascended to the third heaven where he found Prophet Yusuf. Then the Prophet ascended to the fourth heaven where he observed Prophet Idris. In the fifth heaven, the Prophet encountered Harun, the brother of Prophet Musa. In the sixth heaven, he encountered Prophet Musa. Each of these Prophets received Prophet Muhammad with a warm welcome and made supplication (du^a’) for him for good things. The Prophet then ascended to the seventh heaven where our Messenger saw Prophet Ibrahim leaning against al-Bayt al-Ma^mur. Prophet Ibrahim is the best of the prophets after our Prophet, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon them all. In the seventh heaven, Prophet Muhammad saw Sidrat al-Muntaha, an extremely large and beautiful tree. In Paradise, the Prophet witnessed some of the bounties Allah prepared for the inhabitants of Paradise. He saw the Hur ul-^In: non human nor jinn females whom Allah created. They are in Paradise and will be married to whom Allah willed. The Prophet saw the Throne (^Arsh) which is the ceiling of Paradise. The Throne is the largest creation

in size that Allah created. It is NOT a place where Allah exists or sits as many have wrongly mistranslated and claimed. Allah exists without a place because He created the places so He does not need places. Trudeau boasts of tough stance on wealthy at swanky Liberal fundraiser

MONTREAL -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touted his government’s commitment to transparency and its tough stance on the wealthy at a high-priced fundraiser Wednesday attended by some of Montreal’s elite. Before beginning his remarks to the roughly 150 Liberal party donors in attendance, Trudeau thanked Stephen Bronfman, a major party fundraiser and well-known businessman and financier.“Thank you for volunteering your time for this movement,” Trudeau said, “and for being such a strong voice for progressive change in this country.” A 2017 investigation by CBC, Radio-Canada and the Toronto Star revealed Bronfman and his family’s investment company were linked to an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands that may have used questionable means to avoid paying millions in taxes. Bronfman says he’s never funded nor used offshore trusts, and that all his Canadian trusts

have paid all federal taxes on their income. Trudeau said he recognized the audience in the swanky downtown Montreal ballroom “represent people who have really succeeded in this country.”Tickets to the event were $1,500 per person over 35 years old and $750 for anyone under that age. The room was mostly filled with people over 35. Attendees included Bronfman, former mayor of Montreal Denis Coderre and Mitch Garber, a famous private equity financier and chairman of Cirque du Soleil and owner of World Series Poker.“I know it can be frustrating,” Trudeau told the crowd. “The first thing we did when we got elected is raise taxes on the wealthiest one per cent and lowered them for the middle class.” The prime minister also boasted his party was more transparent than the others in the House of Commons. He used the journalists present as an example of his government’s openness.

“Our friends in the media are here tonight,” he said about the handful of journalists at the back of the room. “We are the only political party opening up our fundraisers to the media. We’ve encouraged the Conservatives and the NDP to do the same, but apparently their commitment to transparency is easier when they are talking about it then doing it.”However, Liberal party employees kept a close eye on journalists at the fundraiser, insisting they stay in small room adjacent to the ballroom before Trudeau spoke. Reporters were banned from speaking with anyone at the event and were ushered out of the ballroom immediately after Trudeau finished his 15-minute speech. VICTORIA – Yesterday, BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson came out against the NDP’s tax increases on luxury homes worth over $3 million. Housing Minister Selina Robinson says the BC Liberal record of protecting people at the top is one of the reasons housing is so expensive for most British Columbians. “For 16 years, Andrew Wilkinson’s BC Liberals stood with the top 2% of British Colum-

bians while making life more expensive for everyone else,” said Robinson. “Today he is showing that he hasn’t learned a thing. His plan to let the richest 2% off the hook would mean even higher housing costs for people.” The government’s Homes for BC plan says the increases to the property transfer tax and the school tax rate “not only ask the wealthiest to contribute a little bit more, but they will help to stabilize housing prices.”

Only the most expensive 2% of BC houses ($3 million and up) will be impacted by these two taxes. But Wilkinson is concerned that these changes “will negatively impact housing affordability” for people who buy or already own homes worth more than $3 million. Robinson says the new NDP government is focused on the British Columbians who were left behind under the BC Liberals.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is set to issue an apology to the city’s Chinese residents for historic discrimination on Chinatown’s Culture Day.The apology, on behalf of previous city councils, will address wrongdoings in city legislation, regulations and policies. “In order to move forward, we must first acknowledge the harm that was committed and how this unfortunate chapter in Vancouver’s history continues to impact the lives of Chinese Canadians,” Robertson said in a news release. B.C.’s government has a webpage dedicated to historic wrongs against ChineseCanadians in the province. Those wrongs

include Chinese-Canadian Pacific Railway workers being paid half or less than half of what their white counterparts were making and being excluded from national celebration upon the railway’s completion. Vancouver had racist municipal legislation as well, namely its charter of 1886 that specifically barred Indigenous people and Chinese people from voting in municipal elections. The city hopes the formal acknowledgment of failure will reaffirm Vancouver as a city focused on reconciliation. Robertson will read it aloud in English and two former city councilors, Bill Yee and Mag-

gie Ip, will read it aloud in Chinese on April 22. The event will also feature speakers from Vancouver’s Chinese community including a war veteran, the president of the Chinese Benevolent Association and a young woman on her vision for a vibrant Chinese community. However, nomination race remains one of the toughest challenges the candidates have to face. On March 18th, Mississauga Erin Mills community spoke with one strong voice and selected Imran Mian as a Liberal party candidate believing in his ability to win the upcoming competition with other political parties on Jun 7th provincial election in Ontario. Interestingly, the nomination race had over 6500 registered members eligible to vote. However, there was a 47 percent turnout to the polling centre. Out of 2962 total votes cast, Mian got 1849 while Hifza Musa got 1113 votes. There was a lead of 736 votes as revealed by TV Canada One. Unfortunately, a long line up of potential voters couldn’t make it to the polling area for lateness reasons. Imran Mian, a Canadian of Pakistani origin came to Canada in his late teens in 1988. After completing his high school (at the Kipling collegiate Toronto), he obtained his business degree from the York University. Profession: He is currently working as a senior executive (VP sales) with Mobile live. He has worked with Bell Canada, Samsung Canada and a few other IT companies of repute in senior roles as well. He is famous for practising positive politics and is well known for using the most reliable information to make judgments in order to come up with workable solutions. There is a great deal of importance of focusing on betterment of Erin Mills community in particular and all Canadians in general. He has goals which are reasonable and achievable. If elected as MPP, he is determined to deliver as expected. Since the nomination election is over, it is about time for re-alignment of all volunteers and members under the great Leadership of Imran Mian.

Call for self-control

By: Roshika Deo THE most anticipated Bill to regulate online space has been presented in Parliament — Online Safety Bill 7/2018. The Bill comes at a time when gendered cyberbullying, online sexual harassment and revenge porn are making the news. It is also when public officials are filing defamation cases, fake accounts on social media are increasing, the mainstream media is not so free, (overseas) journalists are persecuted, fake news is our new reality and citizen journalism appears to be the future. Self-regulation Online spaces, specifically social media, need to be self-regulated by the social media corporations. This is in the interest of freedom of expression and speech and, in my opinion, to prevent governments from using regulations and laws to censor information and speech, and to persecute dissenting voices. Women and children? Violence, misogyny, bullying and invasion of privacy are not part of freedom of speech or expression. We are in an era where these offences (which are mostly criminalised) are manifest online.It is not new criminal behaviour, just the context has changed with far wide reaching implications to cause harm.

The impersonal nature of interaction, anonymity and quick accessibility exacerbate the issues. However, online platforms largely remain a microcosm of our communities. So it is these specific acts and behaviour that need to be regulated and criminalised through narrowly and specifically crafted amendments in existing legislations (such as the Crimes Decree) and/or in new legislations. The Bill is described as “an act to establish the online safety commission for the promotion of online safety, deterrence of harmful electronic communication and for related matters”. Much of the provisions in the draft legislation, it would seem, have been adopted from New Zealand. Militants Linked to Al Qaeda Unleash Deadly Car Bombings in Somalia MOGADISHU, Somalia — Three explosions over four days in or near the Somalian capital have left a trail of carnage, killing nearly 20 people and injuring dozens of others, as Islamist militants unleashed a wave of attacks on the country. On Sunday, a car bomb exploded at a security checkpoint near the Interior Ministry on a road leading to the presidential palace in the capital, Mogadishu. At least three people, in addition to the bomber, were killed, a police chief said. The blast sent a plume of black smoke billowing above the skyline. The police chief, Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, said that five other people had been injured in the blast and that the authorities had thwarted two other suicide bombing attacks on Sunday morning. The Shabab, an Islamist extremist group affiliated with Al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had killed 13 members of the security forces, although that could not be independently verified. The group, which has been behind bombings and other attacks in Mogadishu, aims to topple Somalia’s Western-backed federal

government. Earlier on Sunday, another car bomb exploded in Siinka Dheer, outside Mogadishu, but the toll was not immediately clear. Egypt’s exports to Somalia jump to $90M in 2017

CAIRO – 28 March 2018: Egypt’s exports to Somalia rose in 2017 to $90 million, compared to $53 million in 2016, an official statement said. Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade, Tarek Kabil, attributed this increase to the trade missions and mutual visits between the two states. The statement came at the end of the official Egyptian mission to Somalia, which included a number of national bodies working in the trade and banking fields. CAIRO: Enthusiasm appeared to have waned on the third day of Egypt’s presidential election on Wednesday as the country concluded a vote set to give Abdel Fattah El-Sisi a second successive term in power. The queues in front of many polling stations were shorter on Wednesday morning as many voters had already cast their ballot on the first two days of voting. The focus was on turnout, with pro-state media repeatedly calling on the almost 60 million eligible voters to take part “regardless of whom they are going to vote for.” El-Sisi won almost 97 percent of the vote in 2014 but less than half of eligible Egyptians voted. El-Sisi is virtually unopposed and faced little challenge from the only other candidate, Mussa Mustafa Mussa, who is considered to be an admirer of the president. El-Sisi has

been praised by supporters for protecting the country in the face of regional threats. ANKARA: Turkish troops are making sweeping territorial gains in northern Syria, fuelling speculation that Ankara and Moscow are secretly working together to establish greater control over the war. Sections of the Turkish media reported that the center of Tel Rifaat city in northern Syria was encircled on Tuesday after up to 100 Russian police officers mysteriously pulled out of the area, allowing the soldiers and members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to enter. Although Ankara has yet to confirm this, Arab News sources said that Tel Rifaat’s col-

lapse is imminent, with negotiations still continuing. These latest developments have caused military analysts to suggest that Moscow is deliberately ceding control of the area, betraying Kurdish fighters it once protected, in a bid to stop Turkey from edging closer to the US. They told Arab News it may be the clearest sign yet that the countries are secretly working together in a double game, swapping territory and selling out guerrilla factions that they had previously supported, in an attempt to improve their strategic footholds in the country. Magdalena Kirchner, of the Istanbul Policy Center, told Arab News that while there was no definitive proof of a quid pro quo, the fact that Russian forces left Tel Rifaat “just hours before the operation started points to fairly close coordination and ongoing negotiations”. Relations between Turkey and Russia have fluctuated wildly since Moscow intervened

in the Syrian civil war in September 2015 to support the regime of President Bashar Assad, which Ankara had vowed to help topple. In November that year, Turkey shot down a Russian fighter plane near its border with Syria, causing Russia to respond with sanctions. In June 2016 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan apologized for downing the plane and relations began to thaw. Since early 2017 the two countries, together with Iran, have been cooperating in what they say is an attempt to bring about a political end to the conflict by establishing “de-escalation zones” throughout Syria. But Tel Rifaat’s targeting by Turkish forces this week may be a sign that both sides are more interested in furthering their geopolitical interests than keeping the peace, analysts told Arab News. Kerim Has, a lecturer in Turkish-Russian relations at Moscow State University, said that there have been indications elsewhere in Syria that an unofficial, mutually beneficial arrangement, has been reached between the

two countries. While officials have yet to confirm the city’s fall, the Turkish army recently used its Twitter account to claim that people wanted it “to be cleared of terrorist organizations.” Omer Ozkizilcik, an analyst at the Middle East Foundation in Ankara, told Arab News that Russia had made significant efforts to involve the YPG in a political solution to the war. He said Moscow gave up on this approach when it emerged that the US is training 30,000 personnel, including elements of the YPG, to secure the Syrian border, a move that has infuriated Ankara. The US denies that the YPG and PKK are closely linked. On Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin and Erdogan discussed plans for a Syria summit they are due to hold in Ankara next week. Ottawa sued for $195-million over Canadian visa services contract

By:Robert Fife The federal government is being sued for $195-million for cancelling an $867-million contract to manage Canadian visa application centres around the world, a dispute that ended up at the cabinet table. The re-tendered contract, now valued at $1-billion, was awarded last month to VF Worldwide Holdings, an Indian company that previously handled Canadian visa services for the government. A statement of claim filed in Ontario Superior Court on Wednesday by Ottawa-based Le Group Conseil Bronson Consulting and Cox and Kings, a global corporation that is headquartered in Mumbai, accuses the government of acting in bad faith. The two companies claim that they won the multimilliondollar visa application services contract in 2016 but bureaucrats at Public Services and Procurement Canada suddenly cancelled the solicitation and re-tendered the procurement. The statement of claim alleges that the government acted in bad faith by disclosing the companies’ pricing strategy to officials at the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship department and “the information began to leak

out to the public” after the contract was retendered. “Eventually it leaked to the Plaintiffs’ competitors,” the court document alleges. “The fact that the incumbent scored higher on the financial evaluations was the result of its ability to get a ‘second kick at the can,’ and with the knowledge that the original winner, being the Plaintiffs, had bid $0 for the government portion of the final bid.” The two companies had proposed that they would not charge the government for visa work but impose fees on the people seeking visa applications. According to the statement, the plaintiffs were the successful bidders until they were suddenly told in October, 2016, that Ottawa was cancelling the solicitation. Officials subsequently told the bidders that their proposal did not represent “best value for Canada” and would have had the potential for “negative socio-economic impacts on Canada affecting the volumes of people willing to apply for a visa to come to Canada.” The statement of claim argues that the two companies offered “best value for Canada” because the government would receive the visa services for free. The statement also said

the companies did not plan to increase the fees charged to visa applicants. Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen and then-public services minister Judy Foote were consulted as was cabinet, according to court documents. The government claimed cabinet confidentiality so it is not known what was discussed about the contract. The statement of claim also raises concerns that immigration officials “purposely began communicating using PINs and BlackBerry in an attempt to avoid creating a trail of evidence. “That conduct has affected the ability of the Plaintiffs to obtain a full and fair discourse in this proceeding. The Plaintiffs plead that a negative interference should be drawn as a result of this conduct,” according to the statement of claim. David Baird, president of Bronson Consulting, accused the government of stonewalling and leaving the two companies no option but to seek redress through the courts. “We competed for this contract and won it fair and square. Then the government refused to award it to us without any justification,” Mr. Baird said in a statement to The Globe and

Sometimes one of us travels for work and the other tags along. When we find a good deal, we make a split-second decision—because great airfares don’t last long—and then start planning. We’re both freelance writers, so we have some flexibility in terms of scheduling. We watch hotel prices, and often book rooms using points, free nights and other discounts. We plan carefully, and if we decide that a trip might involve stops in multiple cities, we price our transportation options. We check exchange rates on currency. We read up on attractions, look for deals, and seek out free walking tours.In the past few years, we’ve been to mountains, beaches, massive cities and isolated towns you could speed through in a blink. We’ve been all over the U.S. and to a dozen or so countries. That means long flights, wandering dazedly through strange places, sometimes not knowing what or where we’ll be eating next or exactly when we’ll make it to our next destination. But it also means volcanoes, glaciers, geysers and

warm friendly strangers from all over the world. And it means memories we’ll treasure forever. Our friends think it’s kind of kitschy, but my husband, Mike, and I collect magnets from the places we go. We arrange them on the side of the fridge that faces our table in the kitchen, so that when we’re sitting together we can see the collection, which reminds us of some of our happiest times. With us, travel is always interesting. I am not a flexible person. I like to eat, work and exercise all at the same times, every day. Historically I haven’t reacted particularly well to disruptions in my schedule. Mike is not a planner. He functions best on the fly. His spontaneity can be annoying—to me, it seems ridiculous how his laissez-faire approach to any given day somehow results in eventual productivity. But when we’re exploring somewhere new, it works. Together we’ve tracked down a lost laptop on a bus in the Irish countryside, figured out how to change a tire on a French minivan and found our way when we were dumped into the rippling masses of humanity in Tokyo’s city center. On each trip I’ve taken, I’ve been surprised

by new places and the people I’ve met there. I’ve learned something different every day—sometimes every hour, and sometimes even more frequently than that. And every time I come back home, I’m even more convinced that travel is, without a doubt, the best investment you can make. Immediate Dividends Some part of the benefit is purely financial. There is no longer the parental unit of a working father and stay at home mother taking care of the children. Families are changing with fathers choosing to stay home or mothers who are working full-time with a secondary set of adults taking care of the children in the forms of grandparents or day care centres. The three major changes for this can be attributed to the decline in marriage, a rising number of women in the workforce, and a new blend of remarried or co-habited families. This can have a wide variety of changes resulting in backlash in our personal, professional, other relationships with friends in society. Your child is learning a host of positive traits with both sets of working parents and there is a dire need for support for parents who face negativity in society because of this decision. 1.Empower Your Child by Empowering Yourself Children who see their parents and especially their mothers are more likely to have jobs themselves. The working mother shows their children responsibility, independence, and ambition to retain higher positions and wages. This is especially important for girls in our culture to have financial and personal independence and hold valuable positions in society. Also, men who grow up in households with a working mother are more respectful and well-rounded men when they are older. The working mother and father, or stay at home parents, show children that their actions aren’t limited to what society has decided is the norm and they are free to do what works best for their own future. 2.Teaching your Children about Responsibilities Children see the value of responsibilities when you finish your job and continue with the “job” that need to be done for your family and yourself. They are exposed to a realistic world that they would be entering very soon with a need for both parents to have careers. By teaching them the importance of fulfilling your duties at work and successfully at home, you are showing them by example of the actions they can take when placed in the similar situation. The impact of having a career and a home life signals to your children that you are a true role model. 3.Breaking Gender Roles Children who have working mothers and fathers

gain an abundance of positive traits that will only help them in the future. Girls who see their mother working see the positivity of having an income and gain ambition to hold a position themselves when they are older. They see their fathers providing for their family or looking after the home when their mother is at work as responsibility that is shared between the parents. They can tackle the shame and guilt faced with a working mother by reflecting on their own family along with a higher standard of expectations for their own spouse. They will gain the confidence to battle the regressive backlash when they disclose their own career aspirations. Men who have working fathers see the importance of providing for their family, the peace of financial safety, and the importance of a healthy family and career balance. They see the value of helping out with chores at home because it is still work at the end of the day and doesn’t discriminate by gender. They will prove to be better husbands, fathers, and members of society. The benefits of breaking the archaic and toxic gender roles in our society we are helping our own daughters and son’s from facing a future similar to ours. 4.Promoting Education and Growth By seeing your positions no matter how big or small, exposes your children to the possibilities in the world. They see you as credible sources of information and guidance when they seek their own path in the world. You can first-hand explain the importance of education or the changing work force to aid your children in the direction which will find them happiness and comfort in a world long after you’re gone. The positives of having a working set of parents-more importantly mothers provide more positives than the regular repeated negatives portrayed in our society. And it is also easy to get down on yourself for having various personality traits you perceive as weaknesses maybe you are quick to anger or always running late. Instead of getting down on yourself for your weaknesses try instead to reframe them as something positive - as traits that make you uniquely you. •Make a list of all your strengths. Include the big ones that are huge components of your personality, like your patience, all the way down to the small things you are good at. See how many great qualities you contribute to the world! •Now make a list of all your weaknesses. Write down things you don’t like about your personality or you feel are negative traits. •Look at your list of weaknesses. Think about ways you could see those weaknesses as positives. For example, say one of your weaknesses is that you think you talk too much. You could reframe this to a positive as, “It’s easy for me to express my opinion.” “I’m too sensitive” could be reframed as, “I have empathy for others.” Stay true to yourself. To appreciate and accept yourself, it is important to know who you are. It may be helpful to identify your personal values. Knowing what is important to you and making decisions based on your personal values helps you be authentic and appreciate your true self. Make sure your values are your own and you are not simply taking on the values of your friends or family. Figure out what is important to you. •Explore which values are important to you and write them down. A concrete list of your values may help you recognize when you are being inauthentic to yourself and your values. •You may feel like other people may not like you if they see the “real” you. It may be helpful for you to explore these feelings with someone you trust or by writing in a journal. Determine when you feel most yourself and when you feel

the need to pretend to be someone else, and explore the differences between those situations. •If you feel you cannot be yourself around certain friends or family, perhaps because you fear being made fun of, then it may be a sign that you fear rejection about revealing your true self. •The first step to changing your behavior is noticing when you do it. Pay attention and later, spend some time reflecting on what triggered your behavior in a particular situation. It may take a while for you to feel comfortable enough to be your authentic self around other people. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t do it right away. Avoid comparisons. Comparing yourself to others can leave you feeling discouraged and judgmental. Remember, you generally see only a piece of others’ everyday lives (particularly on social media). Comparing yourself to someone will only set you up for disappointment and feeling bad about yourself. •Measure your growth by comparing yourself to who you were in the past instead. For example, think about your life 10 years ago. Has it changed? Have you acquired new skills, new relationships, or left dysfunctional life patterns behind? The impolite child: An unexplained mystery ur children often reply to us in a rude manner that we may have never experienced before. When we encounter this inappropriate behavior, which is completely unacceptable to anyone with a sound innate disposition, we get shocked and feel confused, and we do not know how to deal with it. Little wonder, since Islam strongly rejects this inappropriate behavior and severely warns against it. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Say not to them [so much as], “Uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.} [Quran 17:23] So, what should we do when our children say “Uff” and do not say polite words? Why do our children adopt this rude behavior, and what should we do to cure it? Knowing the causes of the malady first The question that crosses everyone’s mind is: Why does the child behave in an inappropriate and rude manner? We will answer this

difficult question, but before knowing the answer, we would like to review our conditions and renew our intention to cure it. Surely, diagnosing the causes of the malady is the first step towards prescribing the remedy. Dear parent, or anyone who assumes the responsibility of the upbringing process: The child usually does not utter these improper words or use this manner of talking unless there is a reason that irritates him. Thus, there are several motives that urge the child to behave in this way. They include: 1- His need for attention The child’s bad behavior may result from the desire to attract people’s attention. That is because many parents neglect their children, not in terms of food, drink and clothes since the majority of parents take care of this aspect and dedicate all their time to it, but I mean intangible negligence. It is the kind of negligence in which the father does not ask after his child, or extend Salaam to him or follow his progress at school. It is the negligence in which the father does not sit with his child even for an hour to talk to him, discuss his affairs, seek his opinion, hear from him or know his ideas, hobbies and skills. This sort of negligence may be a reason for this rude behavior. 2- Desire for experimentation The child may ask himself, “I wonder what would happen if I utter a bad word?” This is the question that echoes in the mind of your child when he thinks of uttering a bad word

The child at every stage of his life tries to explore everything new, so he wonders, “What will your reaction be when I say this word?” 3- Unsavory role models in the media Children in films and comedy stars that are watched by family members on TV do not have good morals, contrary to what some people may think. In some children’s programs, children do not treat their parents in a proper way and they utter foul words and raise their voices over their fathers. Undoubtedly, the child watches these models and learns from this uncensored source. 4- Unrealistic parental expectations What reaction do you expect from young children if you ask them to go to bed early on their holidays? Do you think that these children will submit to you or obey you? It is certainly impossible. A time-tested proverb says: “If you wish to be obeyed always ask for what is attainable.” It goes without saying that children will not obey their parents when they ask them to do the impossible or what is difficult to do. 5- The child’s history of coddling Coddling is definitely one of the main reasons for rude behavior. That is because the child is used to getting anything he wants after weeping. So, the child feels that he is entitled to everything, and this entitlement is an order that must be fulfilled. The right way to deal with a rude child Dear parent or anyone who assumes the responsibility of upbringing, here is a set of practical tips which help you deal with a

rude child. 1- Be a good role model: It is not correct at all that you try to improve your child’s conduct or correct his behavior, while you cannot keep yourself away from bad morals and foul language. 2- Do not take it personally: Exploding angrily in the face of your child will not correct his behavior. Rather, it constitutes another form of behavior that you definitely do not want your child to copy. 3- Do not scold him immediately; both of you need to calm down: If necessary, you can leave the room and return to it, and try to react quietly. A quiet reaction is more effective. 4- If you are not calm, wait until you become calm in order to deal with the situation properly. 5- Try to find the reasons that urged your child to behave in that way: Most probably it does not have any connection with you. 6- Identify the behavior he has done and explain to him that it is not acceptable. 7- Offer him alternatives, if possible. 8- If the behavior is repeated after admonishing him, you can deprive him of some privileges. Finally, dear parent, or anyone who assumes the responsibility of the upbringing process, do not forget to supplicate for your child sincerely instead of supplicating against him. KARACHI: Despite a strong public support, defending champions Peshawar Zalmi failed to retain the title as Islamabad United defeated them by three wickets with 19 balls remaining to lift the glittering trophy for the second time in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) here at the jam-packed National Stadium on Sunday night.Chasing 149, Luke Ronchi and Sahibzada Farhan provided a sound start of 96 to pave the way for an easy win for the United but then Umaid Asif and Chris Jordan were brought in to attack and they grabbed three quick wickets for only six runs to change the momentum of the game.

For the past 50 years PakistanCanada Association has been holding events marking this important day in our nation’s history. This Pakistan Day event for the community was attended by a large number of people. The event began with opening remarks from MC Umar Hayat Sofi director of PCA on Pakistan Day, followed by the recitation of Quran with English translation. Afterwards, the national anthems of both Pakistan and Canada were beautifully played, which was praised by the prominent guests of the event. After Magrub prayer Hon. MLA Bruce Ralston, MLA: Hon. Harry Bains and MLA Rachna Singh addressed and presented a plaque to PCA President from BC Premier. Mr. Hayat then invited the Consul Mr. Fahad Amjad, to address the community at this 78th Republic Day of Pakistan. Mr. Shaukat Khan President PCA highlighted the

Resolution of Pakistan. On behalf of the association, Mr. Khan acknowledged all special guests, and all PCA past and present board of directors for their volunteer’s services for the community for last 50 years and distributed awards among them, included: Mr. Shafat Bajwa, Mr. Sabir Pannun, (his daughter received his award due to his illness) Mr. Malik Arfan and Mr. Haroon Khan. akistan Day or National Pakistan Day also called Pakistan Resolution Day is celebrated on 23rd March every year. The purpose of the day is to commemorate the Lahore Resolution passed on 23rd March 1940 and adaptation of the first constitution of Pakistan on 23rd March 1956 making Pakistan the world’s first Islamic republic. The day celebrates the adoption of Pakistan Resolution by the Muslim League at the Minar-e-Pakistan Lahore. The resolution called for establishing an independent federation comprising provinces with majority Muslim located in the northeastern and northwestern region of British controlled India.

Who Passed-Presented Resolution of Pakistan?

The Pakistan Resolution (also known as Lahore Resolution or Qarardad-e-Pakistan) was drafted by 25 member working committee of All India Muslim League. On the instructions of working Committee, the resolution was presented by Maulvi A.K Fazlul Haq at Minto Park (Now renamed as Iqbal Park) in Lahore on 23rd March 1940 during the annual session of all India

Muslim League. The resolution adopted in the same session by Muslim league membership. Today the importance of resolution is remembered in Pakistan through Minar-ePakistan structure that stands at Iqbal Park in Lahore. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan became the first Governor General of Pakistan and Mr. Liaqat Ali Khan the first prime minister. Indian Act 1935 remained the legal framework for Pakistan till 1956. On 23rd March 1956, the state passed and enforced its own constitution.
