Code for media & government

HE government and the national media will both find a new set of principles, just unveiled by a group of Commonwealth associations in London, extremely useful in protecting freedom of expression in Pakistan and enabling the media to play its due role in securing the people’s right to good governance.

The document titled Commonwealth Principles on Freedom of Expression and the Role of the Media in Good Governance has been drafted by a working group of the Commonwealth Journalists Associa­tion and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, and will be submitted to the Commonwealth leaders for endorsement and support in implementation.

The inspiration for drafting these principles came from the 2003 enunciation of the Commonwealth’s fundamental political values on separation of powers of the three organs of state, and the realisation that “Government transparency and accountability is promoted by an independent and vibrant media, which is responsible, objective and impartial, and which is protected by law in its freedom to report and comment on public affairs”.

What expedited the effort to frame the new principles was the Commonwealth secretary general’s address at a function in April 2017 in which she referred to the killing of scores of journalists across the world each year as “a serious indictment of our collective efforts to build a safer and more inclusive future”. The killings of media persons, their harassment in various ways and their imprisonment made a new effort necessary to protect press freedom and the safety of journalists, uphold the rule of law and fight corruption in public life.

A new set of principles on the freedom of expression must be complied with.

The principles “are intended to serve as a set of guidelines to assist member states and their agencies, as well as Commonwealth legislatures, judiciaries, civil society and media to make appropriate contributions to promoting and developing democratic, accountable and open societies in accordance with Commonwealth values, international norms and standards and the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”.

The first of the 12 principles reiterates the fact that freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy and underpins good governance, public accountability and respect for all human rights, and reaffirms the UN-recognised right to receive and impart information in any form from anywhere.

The second principle describes the nature and scope of restrictions that can be imposed on freedom of expression. These must be in accord with international human rights law, covenants and treaties.

Where warranted by incitement to crime etc, the curbs should be prescribed by law and must be necessary and proportionate. The Commonwealth states are urged to revise their press legislation and sedition laws that criminalise free speech. Truth and public interest should be accepted as adequate defence, and sources of information as well as whistleblowers should be protected.

The third principle upholds the right of access to information and urges member states to enact and implement the right to information

legislation and construe regulatory and restrictive laws narrowly and subject to the public interest test.

The fourth principle calls for open, two-way flow of information between parliament and the media.

All elected bodies should encourage maximum media coverage of their proceedings and respect the media’s right to comment on their performance.

The fifth principle calls upon the judiciaries to promote open justice, and facilitate fair and accurate media coverage of court proceedings. Criminal law and contempt proceedings should not be used to restrict legitimate debate on the judiciary’s affairs. Courts, judges and lawyers must not be threatened or abused.

The media’s right to cover electoral processes is the subject of the sixth principle. Election commissions and other officials should ensure impartiality of electoral processes and equitable access to the media for all parties and candidates.

The seventh principle urges member-states to put in place effective laws and measures to ensure a safe and enabling environment for journalists to work without fear, intimidation and interference.

Journalists should be trained and equipped to work during emergencies.

A call to end impunity in cases of killings of or attacks on journalists and to respect the UN plan of action and Unesco’s requests for judicial follow-up to killings of journalists is the theme of the eighth principle.

The ninth principle calls upon the media to set its professional standards and observe its code of conduct and instal a mechanism to address complaints against itself.

The 10th principle defines the limits of plans to regulate the various

media forms without interfering with their rights. The last two principles, 11th and 12th, stress the observance of these principles and the upholding of Commonwealth values.

These principles cover some of the ground with which journalists have long been familiar, but they also address their concerns that are of recent origin, such as killings of media persons, demands of duty in conflict areas, and matters related to elections, the judiciary and impunity.

The principles discussed here are more relevant to Pakistan than many other countries of the world.

This country has long been identified as one of the most dangerous places for journalists. It is about to hold a general election that is likely to determine the form and substance of democracy the state may be able to practise.

Corruption in public life and administration is endemic, and the state has yet to display the will and capacity to defeat the monster.

Neither the much-touted development projects nor the campaign against extremism and militancy meets the minimum standards of transparency and accountability.

The national media has a heavier than normal responsibility. It must help both state and society overcome the challenges confronting them with as little pain as possible.

It is difficult to find any among the 12 principles that is not applicable to this country.

The government would thus do well to take definite steps to ensure the fullest possible compliance with these principles and support their adoption and implementation by fellow members of the Commonwealth.

A wonderful article ‘Truthfulness’ in the Al Ameen News paper (6, April) explains well the importance of truthfulness connected to true Scriptural religion and its followers.

“Truthfulness is very closely related to trustworthiness and can perhaps be regarded as its twin quality. Like trust worthiness, it was also the second distinguishing feature of our prophet (saws), as he was called As Sadiq (truthful), for his immaculate truthfulness. like trustworthiness, it is intertwined with Islamic faith (Iman). It is inconceivable that a believer (Muslim) will not be truthful or that a liar can be a Believer”.

“In terms of graveness and abomination the Holy Quran equates telling lies to worshiping Idols.

“False witness has been equated to Idolatry: Believer cannot be a liar”. There are 4 traits which whoever possesses is a pure hypo-

crite”. (Hadith-Gospel) “Keep away from the filth of the Idols and keep away from telling lies, dedicating yourselves purely and uprightly to Allah, without equating anyone with Him”.

Religion and truthfulness are intertwined with each other among many other distinguish traits of high quality of ethics, and moral values. In opposition to that possession of the evil traits of lying, cheating, deceiving, false witness, embezzlement, frauds of Ponzi schemes are the signs of ‘hypocrisy’, and the hypocrites are described most dangerous in the Quran; as a hypocrite wears a false face mask uses the fake ID of a ‘Friend’ or a ‘Believer’, but is anti-Islam, a secret enemy of Allah and HIS followers, planning the treacherous tricks against them by pretending to be a Muslim by promoting the Islamic Arts and Artifacts.

Fire crews arrived to find a working fire with heavy smoke conditions. There were several occupants in the residence at the time of the fire. One occupant was able to exit the residence on their own and fire crews quickly rescued a second occupant from a second floor balcony. Both were treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

Fire crews fighting the fire in the basement with limited access were informed that there were two occupants still unaccounted for inside the residence. A search for the missing occupants resulted in fire crews rescuing two occupants from the basement and lifesaving efforts were attempted by BC Ambulance. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, both of the occupants extracted from the basement area have died – one at the scene and the other in hospital.

At least 19 wounded in cross-LoC shelling by Indian forces

Heavy Indian shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) left at least 19 persons, including women and children, wounded in different parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Wednesday, officials said.The shelling started in Khuiratta sector of Kotli district at about 2:30pm and was the “heaviest” in many months, according to Khuiratta Assistant Commissioner (AC) Ali Asghar. “The Indian troops indiscriminately targeted houses and educational institutions without an iota of shame,” he said, as he spoke to Dawn from Seri village, amid the thunder of falling shells.

According to AC Asghar, seven persons, including three women, were injured in Seri village, while a teenager was injured in Janjot Bahadur village. He identified the victims in Seri as Munir Begum, 50, Somia Zubair, 28, Moeen Riaz, 22, Sheharyar Jabir, 22, and his cousin Aamer Suleman, 21, Anwar Begum, 80, and Abdul Qadeer, 25. The victim in Jan-

jot Bahadur village was identified as Danish Rauf, 16.

District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Kotli superintendent Dr Tariq Mehmood told Dawn that most of the injured persons had been brought to his facility. “Some of them are in critical condition,” he said.

AC Asghar added that apart from human casualties, three buffaloes of one Mistri Tofeeq were also killed in the neighbouring Tain village. He said that the shelling had also damaged many houses. The assistant commissioner revealed that some shells landed on the premises of Girls Inter College and Boys High School Seri where students were appearing in 10th-grade exams under the AJK Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) in the second (afternoon) shift.“Panic spread at both centres and students ran out for their lives. Fortunately, no one was wounded,” he said.

Kotli’s deputy commissioner Abdul Hameed Kiani told Dawn that he had written to the BISE chairperson to fix some other date for Wednesday’s paper. Subsequently, exam centres in Seri had also been shifted to Gora Balyal and Syedpur villages, he added.

CPEC investment and its spin-off effects have generated thousands of jobs. 10,000 MW have been added to our national grid, ameliorating our chronic energy shortages.” He said the development of the deep seaport of Gwadar was proceeding at a fast track, at the southern tip of this Corridor. “On completion, it would not only serve as a tran-

sit and transshipment hub, but become an economic nucleus.”“Pakistan’s economy is growing 6 per cent annually,” he said. “Over the medium-term, our growth rates are expected to surpass global averages.

At least 7 civilians killed in fighting and protests in India-held Kashmir At least seven Kashmiri people were killed in fighting in India-held Kashmir on Wednesday that sparked angry retaliatory protests and violent street clashes across the restive Himalayan region.

Kashmir — divided between India and Pakistan but claimed in its entirety by both — has witnessed a surge in violence with more than 100 people killed since the start of the year. In the latest shootout, Indian forces killed four Kashmiris in Kulgam district in southern Kashmir, police said. Iran scrambles to halt rial’s slide Facebook’s Zuckerberg apologizes amid threat of US sanctions to U.S. Congress, vows to do better

Iran will enforce a 42,000rial exchange rate for the US dollar as of Tuesday, in a move expected to end a currency crisis that has angered Iranians. The Iranian rial hit an all-time low against the dollar on Monday, when the majority of exchange offices in Tehran turned off their indicators amid fluctuating rates. Each dollar was reportedly trading for more than 60,000 rials on Monday, posting a whopping 16 percent rise against the Iranian currency compared to Sunday morning. “The country’s exchange rate will be 42,000 rials,” First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said in a broadcast speech, after an emergency cabinet meeting held on Monday evening. This will mark the end of a dual exchange rate system, including a preferential rate set by the Central Bank of Iran and a free market rate. “We will not recognise any other exchange rate in the market.

To us foreign currency sold at any other price would be illegal,” Jahangiri said, easing concerns after rial’s sharp fall wreaked havoc for two days. This week’s currency turmoil came after another significant fall in the value of the rial in February, when the government was somehow successful in curbing the fluctuations through a crackdown on illegal traders as well as raising the interest rates. However, those policies were proved to work only as short-term remedies when the rial began its downward spiral in late March following the Nowruz holidays, which mark the beginning of the Iranian fiscal year. On Sunday afternoon, the majority of exchange offices in Tehran’s Ferdosi St, where many registered and unregistered currency traders do business, refused to trade the major global currencies, waiting for the markets to stabilise.

As a result, long lines were formed in front of the few offices that did sell up to maximum $1,000 to each customer at a subsidised rate - fixed then at 49,500 rials for each dollar.

At one office, a man wrote down the names of the people standing in line to let them in, while a police officer guarded the door. At a safe distance from this office and police forces, which were roaming the street, a man, seemingly in his fifties, was making known to pedestrians around him that he was willing to buy the dollar and euro at free market rates. “Most of these offices have stopped working. If they do buy, they offer prices as

low as the preferential rate,” Alizadeh told Al Jazeera, refusing to give his first name. “I would pay up to 55,000 rials for each dollar, because I have customers waiting for it,” he said as markets prepared to close on Sunday afternoon. Rial’s slide is believed to affect the livelihood of ordinary Iranians by pushing up the price of imported goods, among other reasons, as well as leaving an impact on businesses. “The market’s reaction to such circumstances is a complete stop. No trader issues invoices until the exchange rates are stable,” Mohammadreza Ziaei, a businessman who runs a trading company importing raw materials for food industry, told Al Jazeera. “Raw materials are often sold on two-month credit. After the rial’s slide, the products I sold two months ago, not only fails to yield a 10 percent profit I expected, but I incur damage.” In his remarks, Jahangiri referred to both external causes as well as efforts by specific domestic political factions as causes of the rial’s devaluation. “It seems that non-economic causes and unpredictable factors have been effective in creating this issue.” The currency problem comes ahead of an expected decision by the US President Donald Trump on May 12 on whether Washington will re-impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic, lifted as part of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with the world powers. Some experts believe the uncertainty over the fate of the nuclear deal, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, is among the reason behind the collapse of the rial. Meanwhile, Hesamodin Ashna, a senior adviser to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, said in a vaguely written tweet on Sunday, that the rial’s fall was a new crisis which was similar to the one created in December. He was referring to deadly protests across Iran, which the government said were manufactured by its hardline opponents. Ashena did not elaborate.

Russia issues more warnings against airstrikes on Syria

BEIRUT: Russian lawmakers have warned the United States that Moscow would view an airstrike on Syria as a war crime, saying it could trigger a direct military clash between the two former Cold War adversaries.

Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon went even further, saying any missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and the launching sites targeted — a stark warning of a potential major confrontation in Syria.

US President Donald Trump threatened military action after last weekend’s suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town near Damascus, which activists and rescuers say killed at least 40 people. The

Syrian government and its ally Russia deny that such an attack happened.

Asked about Moscow’s reaction to a possible US strike on Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia still hopes that all parties in the conflict will refrain from taking “steps that could gravely destabilize the fragile situation in the region.”

State news agency RIA Novosti on Wednesday quoted Andrei Krasov, deputy chairman of the State Duma’s defense committee, as saying that Russia will treat a US airstrike on Syria “not just as an act of aggression but a war crime of the Western coalition.”

Zuckerberg faced 44 senators in a rare joint hearing of the Senate judiciary and commerce committees to talk about how his social media company protects user data and deals with election meddling, among other issues. In his opening remarks Tuesday, Zuckerberg, 33, said that Facebook didn’t do enough to prevent its tools from being used for harm — citing fake news, interference in foreign elections, hate speech and data privacy. But he rejected the suggestion that his company was “wilfully blind” and said he has made major changes to the service to seek out fake accounts and to better protect users’ privacy. Facebook revealed last month that political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica (CA), which had ties to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, may have harvested data of 87 million users without their knowledge. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a former Connecticut attorney general, produced a document his staff called a previously undisclosed 2014 agreement in which Facebook granted the researcher at the centre of the Cambridge Analytica scandal permission to sell data collected from Facebook users through a survey. Facebook has claimed it was deceived by the researcher, whose survey was used to collect data on up to 87 million users. Blumenthal asked if the document violated a 2011 consent decree on improving user privacy that Facebook reached with the Federal Trade Commission. Zuckerberg said no, but also said the document was “in conflict” with Facebook rules. Blumenthal decried Facebook’s “wilful blindness” and insisted it will only change its ways with strict regulation.

Horgan says Alberta legislation to raise Airbnb agrees to help enforce gas prices in B.C. ‘provocative Vancouver’s short-term rental rules Premier John Horgan says he’s concerned and surprised that Alberta’s latest move in an escalating pipeline feud is legislation that could drive up British Columbia’s already sky-high gas prices. Alberta’s New Democrat government served notice Tuesday of plans to introduce legislation that Premier Rachel Notley has said will give the province the power to reduce oil flows and likely prompt a spike in gas prices in B.C. Motorists in Metro Vancouver currently pay more than $1.50 a litre for gas. The pipeline dispute between B.C., Alberta and the federal government heated up last weekend when Kinder Morgan Canada announced it was suspending work on the $7.4-billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion because of opposition and delays in B.C. The project, which would triple capacity between Edmonton and Burnaby, B.C., received Ottawa’s approval in 2016, but court challenges and permit delays in B.C. have held up construction. The B.C. government announced in February that it will ask the court to decide if it has the right to restrict diluted bitumen in the Trans Mountain pipeline. The decision to refer the matter to the courts prompted Alberta to suspend a ban on wine imports from B.C. Horgan said Tuesday that he’s concerned about any new legislation in Alberta that may have adverse consequences in his province, including increased gas prices. “I’m always concerned when a jurisdiction to our east decides that they are going to take provocative action because of our attempt to talk to British Columbians about how we protect our environ-

ment,” he said. “I don’t believe legislation that would put an adverse impact on the people of B.C. is in anyone’s interest and I’m surprised the government of Alberta is bringing it forward.” Debate around Trans Mountain has turned to fear-mongering rather than facts and evidence, B.C. Green Leader Andrew Weaver said in a statement Tuesday. “In Alberta, Ms. Notley is engaging in her own fear-mongering by alleging this amounts to a ‘constitutional crisis,’ ” he said. “It is irresponsible to be throwing such inflammatory terms around when B.C. is simply trying to consult with British Columbians and to seek scientific evidence about a substance that poses a significant risk to our communities and to our economy.” Alberta’s proposed legislation is expected to be debated next week.

Notley said Tuesday that the province is prepared to buy the pipeline in order to get its oil products to the ports on the West Coast.

LONDON: The Saudi Arabian-led coalition announced Wednesday that its air defense systems intercepted at least three Houthi missiles launched toward the capital Riyadh, as residents of the capital posted on social media their accounts of hearing a loud explosion and seeing smoke in the sky.

Three rockets were intercepted in the capital and the southern cities of Jizan and Najran, according to state media and the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The missiles followed the downing of two Houthi drones earlier on Wednesday in Jizan and the nearby city of Abha, the coalition said.Houthis militia have launched missiles at Riyadh in recent months, and dozens have been fired at southern Saudi Arabian cities that border Yemen.

The coalition also announced that its defence systems have downed a drone that was directed towards Abha airport and a second drone that was heading towards civilians neighborhood in Jazan. The coalition spokesperson explained that the drones resembles the types and specifications of those used by the Iranians. The coalition warned Houthi militia and those supporting them for using terrorist suicide attacks tactics against civilian areas, saying that the coalition will respond in the most decisive way against those terrorist intrusions targeting residential areas in the kingdom.

The spokesperson added that those supplying the Houthi militias with drone capabilities will also pay a dire price.

Vancouver has reached an agreement with Airbnb that will see the company help enforce the city’s short-term rental rules on users.

Starting this month, new hosts will need to provide Airbnb with a business licence before they can rent out their home using the website. Existing hosts will have to provide one as well, but are being given a grace period of nearly five months, until Aug. 31. Mayor Gregor Robertson said the Airbnb deal is the “first of its kind in Canada,” and will help ensure more of the city’s housing stock goes toward housing people who live here, as opposed to visiting tourists. “(Vancouver’s) new short-term rental regulations strike a fair balance for Vancouver residents who rely on income from short-term rentals to help make ends meet, while also recognizing that our first priority has to be making sure that Vancouverites have a secure and affordable place to call home,” Robertson said in a statement.

Officials estimate there are about 6,600 short-term rentals in the city, and that nearly nine-in-10 are listed on Airbnb.

The licences cost $49 a year, and will be available starting on April 19. Vancouver will only be giving them to people who want to rent out their primary residence.

As part of the city’s agreement with Airbnb, the website has promised to hand over a list of all Vancouver licences and associated addresses every quarter, which officials will use to find illegal operators.

People caught breaking the rules will be subject to a fine of $1,000 per day.

New and existing Airbnb hosts will be required to grant permissions for the information-sharing.

Airbnb is proud to have partnered with the City of Vancouver on this landmark agreement,” said Alex Dagg, public policy director for Airbnb.

ALGIERS: An Algerian military plane crashed and caught fire on Wednesday killing 257 people, mostly army personnel and members of their families, officials said. An AFP photographer at the scene saw the charred wreckage of the plane in a field near the Boufarik airbase from where the plane had taken off. Hundreds of ambulances and dozens of fire trucks with their sirens wailing rushed to the scene of the crash about 25 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Algiers. The defence ministry said in a statement that 247 passengers and 10 crew were killed without mentioning any survivors. Deputy Defence Minister General Ahmed Gaid Salah visited the site and ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, the defence ministry said. The Ilyushin II-76 transport plane was bound for Tindouf in southwest Algeria. Algeria has suffered a string of military and civilian aviation disasters. Two military planes collided mid-flight in December 2012 during a training

exercise in Tlemcen, in the far west of the country, killing the pilots of both planes. In February 2014, 77 people died when a military plane carrying army personnel and family members crashed between Tamanrasset in southern Algeria and the eastern city of Constantine. Only one person survived after the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft came down in the mountainous Oum El Bouaghi region. The defence ministry blamed that crash on bad weather. An Air Algerie passenger plane flying from Burkina Faso to Algiers crashed in northern Mali in July 2014, killing all 116 people on board including 54 French nationals. In October the same year, a military plane crashed in the south of the country during a training exercise, killing the two men on board. adrat Ali (R.A.) was born some thirty years after the birth of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaiha wa Salam). He belonged the most respectable family of Quraish, the Banu Hashim (i.e. Hashmites). His father Abu Talib was the real uncle of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi we Salaam) who brought him up after the death of the Holy Prophet’s grandfather. Ali’s mother was Fatimah bint Asad, who belonged to Banu Hashim. Hadrat Ali’s patronymic name was “Abul Hasan”. The Holy Prophet gave him another name, “Abu Turab” which was most liked by Hadrat Ali. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Salaam) took Ali in his childhood from his father, Abu Talib, and brought up him like his own son.

First Youth To Accept Islam

When the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi we Salaam) started revelations Hadrat Ali (R.A.) was about ten years old. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi we Salaam) disclosed his mission before Ali and he accepted it immediately, thus he became the first youth to enter the fold of Islam. When the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi we Salaam) started to preach openly, he invited all of his family members to a feast and announced his mission before them. Nobody listened to him, but young Ali stood up and said.

Hadrat Ali (R.A.) was one of the very important members of “Shura” (Advisory Council) during the time of the first three Khalifahs. He was also the great jurist (Mufti) of Medina during the time of past Khalifahs. He was among the panel of six persons who had to select the Khalifah amongst themselves after Hadrat Umar (R.A.). Hadrat Uthman had great regard for him and consulted him in all the matters. His sons were the main guards at Uthman’s residence when the rebels laid siege to his house. Thus, we conclude that Hadrat Ali (R.A.) gave his fullest possible support to all of his predecessors.

Abu Bakr Islamic Centre Surrey raises 150K in its Fundraising Dinner

Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allahu azzawajjal, Abu Bakr Islamic Centre held a fundraising event featuring Shaykh Saad Nomani from Madinah. The 800 people who attended were treated to an outstanding display of talent by Shaykh Saad Nomani reciting the noble Quraan in many different styles imitating many famous Imams. The highlight of the night was a replication of Shaykh Abdur Rahman as Sudais which mesmerized all those in attendance. The management of Abu Bakr Islamic Centre were honoured that Shaykh Saad Nomani accepted their invitation and visited Vancouver officially for the first time.

Abu Bakr Islamic Centre has an outstanding debt of approximately $940,000. Pledges and donations

collected in this event were north of $150,000 Alhamdulillah.

The fundraising portion of the program was conducted by Shaykh Ahmad Shehab. In November 2017, Abu Bakr Islamic Centre received their Charitable status and have since started issuing tax deductible receipts. Abu Bakr Islamic Centre offers many services to the community such as 5 times salwaat, children’s and adults’ islamic educational classes, Jumuah and taraweeh.

On April 1st, International Muslim Academy of Canada (IMAC) organized an event at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey to remember the night of Miraj-un Nabi(saw).

Mr. Mohammad Yunus Ibrahim of IMAC was the MC for this event. Program started with Tilawat-e-Quran-Pak recited by Nabi Haroon and Ashaz Bilal Khan followed by beautiful Hamad o Naat Rasool Maqbool (saw) by Naseer Pirzada, Mr. Muzamil Ahmed and Dr. Niaz Ahmed recited beautiful Naats.

After Hamd-o-Naat session, MC requested guest Urdu dynamic speaker Maulana A. Latif Naumani head Imam of Masjid Aulia Allah to deliver a speech on Isra wal- Miraj. He delivered a spiritual Biyan. He said that in order to understand what happened on that night with our beloved Prophet Mohammad (saw), we should carefully read the first verse of Surah Isra’a 17.1” Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa.”. He also said it is Ahel Sunnah wal Jamat’s strong belief that Muhammad(saw) travelled from Masjid al-Haraam to Masjid Aqsa and then Masjid Aqsa to seventh sky and

Trudeau looks to move on from controversial China, India visits with 10-day international trip

The stakes will be high on Justin Trudeau’s trip, the first stop of which will be Peru for the 8th Summit of the Americas, as the PM looks to leave behind his previous trips and land some new trade partners for Canada.

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be looking to turn the page on his widely criticized trips to China and India — and land some new trade partners for Canada — when he embarks Thursday on a major 10-day foreign tour, including two major international summits with leaders from around the globe.

The stakes will be high, starting with Trudeau’s first stop in Peru for the 8th Summit of the Americas, which plays host every four years to more than 30 countries across the Western Hemisphere. There had been speculation that Canada, the U.S. and Mexico would announce some form of an agreement in principle on a new North American Free Trade Agreement.

But while high-level talks are still expected to take place, the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump — he’s staying home, ostensibly to oversee the possible American response to a chemical attack in Syria — has dampened talk of ceremonial surprises.

Instead, the meeting is likely to be dominated by the political crisis in Venezuela, where president Nicolas Maduro, who will also not take part, has abandoned all pretence of democratic rule, cracking down on dissent in the face of spiralling economic calamity.

Brexit is also being seen as a potential catalyst for re-energizing the Commonwealth, thanks to a newly engaged British government, following years of questions about the organization’s importance.

The meeting, whose participants include a number of African and Asian countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Pakistan and

Bangladesh, is also expected to tackle concerns about human rights and democracy.

One issue close to Canada’s heart that won’t get individual billing during the London meeting, however, will be LGBTQ rights; member states have taken it off the agenda.

Canada has been an outspoken critic of Maduro and will no doubt join the chorus of condemnation in Peru while pushing for a tougher stand against corruption throughout the Americas. Trudeau will also meet with leaders from the Pacific Alliance, a trade bloc comprising Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, all of which have free trade deals — and close political relationships — with Canada. He’ll also get a rare chance to meet with Latin America’s largest trading bloc, Mercosur, which counts powerhouse Brazil as well as Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay among its members.

With the fate of NAFTA up in the air and efforts afoot to diversify trade away from the U.S., Canada and Mercosur quietly held a first round of free trade talks in March.......

The government of B.C. Premier John Horgan announced in February that it will ask the courts to decide if it has the right to restrict the flow of diluted bitumen in the Trans Mountain pipeline.

Singh has so far refused to take sides in the escalating feud between Premier Horgan and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley over the pipeline expansion, saying it’s a matter for the federal government to resolve.

“We want to make sure this pipeline goes forward. We want to make sure it goes forward on the basis that gets us the advantages that we’re seeking as soon as possible,” he said.

Cyclone Keni has moved out of Fijian waters and lies about 275km south-southwest of the Tongan capital of Nuku’alofa, reports Pacnews.The Fiji Met Service said the cyclone still remains a category three storm, with winds between 130 and 185km/h still blowing.At its peak, average wind gusts were up to 195km/h. Keni was forecast to weaken as it continued to move southeast into cooler waters. Within the next 18 hours the storm could cease to be a cyclone, said Met Service.

Cyclone Keni wreaked havoc as it passed the southern islands of Fiji overnight bringing destructive winds and downpours causing flooding. The Fiji government said all schools being used as evacuation centres would remain closed today as well as all schools on Kadavu Kadavu suffers direct hit Some homes collapsed and a school suffered serious damage on Kadavu at the height of Tropical Cyclone Keni last night, reports the Fiji Sun.Anare Leweniqila, director of National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), said Kadavu appeared to be the worst hit area.Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said yesterday that the government had received reports of damage to homes in Kadavu and the school in Vunisea.“At 5pm this afternoon TC Keni is still very much in our waters, so there will be damaging winds,” said Bainimarama.

Cyclone Keni did not make landfall and it was approximately 95 km east south east of Kadavu. It was moving away last night.

Leweniqila said they would send an assessment team to Kadavu as soon as the weather permitted. He said they did not have details of the damage. Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu confirmed receiving a report that some houses had been destroyed.

“The last report I received from the village was some dwelling houses had fallen,” he said. He said communication to Kadavu was cut off before he could get more details.

In an earlier interview before Cyclone Keni hit, the headman (turaganikoro), Kalivati Tukutukulevu, said the village was prepared and they had eight evacuation centres, including the village hall. Tukutukulevu said they were experiencing strong winds and they were prepared for the cyclone.

“Villages of Ono, Buliya, Dravuni and Kokomo have been told to move to their evacuation centres,” he said.The Fiji island of Kadavu suffered a direct hit with homes destroyed, trees uprooted and boats capsized on the island’s south side. S:asiapacificreport.

Saudi considering proposal to set up military base, nuclear waste site on Qatar border

Saudi Arabia could consider a proposal to dig a maritime canal along the kingdom’s border with Qatar, turning the peninsulanation into an island and transforming its only land border into a military zone and nuclear waste site, state-linked Saudi newspapers reported on Monday.

The project has not been given official approval and faces many obstacles. Still, the proposal signals a new low in the 10-monthold feud between Qatar and a quartet of nations that includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain.

The four accuse Qatar of sponsoring terrorism because of its support for miltant opposition groups in the region and its warm relations with Iran. Qatar denies the allegations and says the moves attempt to undermine its sovereignty.

Qatar’s ruling emir, Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, met in Washington on Monday with United States Defence Secretary Jim Mattis. He is scheduled to meet President

Donald Trump on Tuesday. Saudi Arabia’s Sabq and al-Riyadh newspapers carried nearly identical reports Monday saying that under the proposal, Saudi Arabia would transform part of its side of the border with Qatar into a military base and another area would become a dump site for waste from nuclear reactors the kingdom wants to build.

The UAE, meanwhile, would also build a nuclear waste site at the closest point near its border with Qatar.

An earlier report by Sabq newspaper ran with a headline saying the canal project would “turn Qatar into an island” and would take just 12 months to complete.

The so-called Salwa Marine Canal project would be funded by Saudi and Emirati investors and dug by Egyptian companies with experience in the Suez Canal.

Sabq reports the canal would span the entirety of the border with Qatar, creating waterfront coastline for resorts, private beaches and Gulf cruise liners. The canal, estimated

Facilitating travel to Canada while keeping Canadians safe

Canadians are invited to provide input on new regulations to expand Canada’s Biometrics Program.

April 6, 2018 – Ottawa, ON – Canada has long had one of the highest per capita rates of immigration in the world and is an attractive destination for immigrants and visitors.

Accurately establishing identity is an important part of immigration decisions and helps keep Canadians safe. For more than 20 years, biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph) have played a role in supporting immigration screening and decision-making in Canada.

In 2018, Canada intends to expand its biometrics program to all foreign nationals applying for a visitor visa, a study or work permit (excluding U.S. nationals), and to all those applying for permanent residence.

The Government of Canada encourages all

Canadians to consider the importance of expanding biometrics in the context of helping facilitate the entry of travellers with legitimate identities, preventing identity fraud, and keeping Canada safe.

Canada currently collects biometrics from in-Canada refugee claimants and overseas refugee resettlement applicants, individuals ordered removed from Canada and individuals from 30 foreign nationalities applying for a temporary resident visa, work permit, or study permit.

Expanding biometrics will strengthen Canada’s immigration programs through effective screening (biometric collection, verification, and information-sharing with partner countries). It will also enable Canada to facilitate application processing and travel – while maintaining public confidence in our immigration system.

The expansion of Canada’s biometrics pro-

gram, which includes the implementation of new requirements for immigration applicants, an expanded biometrics collection service network and automated fingerprint verification at ports of entry, will be rolled out over 2 years (2018 –2019).

On April 7th, the Zaad- ul- Hujjaj Foundation held its second annual fundraising dinner at the Afghan Chopan. With over 120 people in attendance, we were able to raise $12,000 towards sending one person to perform Ramadan Umrah this year and one person to perform Hajj. The program began with the recitation of the Quran

by Hafiz Ahmed Khan, after which the host and Keynote speaker, Hafiz Abubakar Khan, introduced the foundation. The Zaad- Ul- Hujjaj Foundation is a not for profit organization that works towards sending people who are classified as ‘low income earners’ to perform Hajj and Ramadan Umrah. Due to the hefty costs associated with it, we hope to provide a few individuals annually with the financial aid needed to go to the Holy cities of Makkah and Medina where they can fulfill one of the obligatory pillars of Islam and experience a life- altering event. Similarly, the foundation aims to provide the facilities for the performance of Hajj-al-badal along with edu-

cating Musims on the importance of performing Hajj which, Brother Mohammad Sanioura spoke about at the event through the presentation of info graphics. He was followed by Hafiz HammadUllah and Hafiz Raza who spoke about their personal Umrah experiences and Br Mohammad Fahim Afzal who presented information on the organizations annual accounting and budget. Afterwards, Mr and Mrs. Zulfiqar, whose parents went to Hajj this past year through the ZUH foundation, spoke about their experiences and the importance of supporting such causes. The evening concluded with Maulana Zafar Abid’s speech about the importance of Hajj-al-Badal and Maulana Nomani’s excellent fundraising. A person can look very handsome or beautiful, well dressed and stylish even good mannered too. But sooner or later as he speaks and behaves his real character comes out. When we are not good from inside, not good in heart, not of good character or having good qualities inside, it definitely shows outside in our actions.

What is our input, our real self does come out in our behaviour output. One cannot deceive every body all the time. When we value the good qualities rightful conduct and rightful things. When we do mandatory duties, value and honour the rights of others, our inner self, our input is good and that shows in our output. That shows in our dealing with people. The people around us, let them be an educated or illiterated person, rich or poor, needy or arrogant or any person, they can always judge, can understand the real person.

What is in your well comes in your bucket.

When parents themselves are having good values, they will give some, develope same in

their children. We learn basic goodness from our home. One can always upgrade oneself in developing good qualities, fight the temptation of short term gains.

It is important to be good rather than try to give impression to be others/two faced.

Actions speak louder than words. Lets not be liek empty vessels who make lots of noise. We try so hard, waste so much of time, effort and resources to show-off, to show how clever and great we are. Instead use some time and effort to be one. This basic character training one gets from home, family and parents. When a child sees his parents having two faces, behaving badly, cheating etc, he or she are going to take it asnormal. They might think “Oh, life is life”.

Attitude can be in good way too. Attitude is there one certain things which one does or does not do. Attitude is the way we perceive things.

Attitude can be good and also bad. When we go to a restaurant, giving a tip is a good attitude even though we may not visit again, giving a tip for services when we are travelling or otherwise.

Attitude is honouring the commitment.

he value of good friends is hard to over-emphasize. It suggests that people with friends to rely on during stressful times experience healthier, more successful and live longer. A good friendship lessens the negative effects of high stress level. It is very supportive towards a meaningful relationship at home and work.

Take time to take good care of yourself. Eat a balanced diet, exercise and get plenty of rest. Take time to relax with friends and family. A high rate of change often means extra stress and strain on your body. It’s important to pay attention to what your body/mind/ soul needs.

Build your self-esteem. Always remember, you are a unique individual with special talents and interests. It’s helpful to make a list of what you like most about yourself. Encouraging others to feel good about themselves is a wonderful way to feel good about ourselves. You will always cheer others if you pass a sincere compliment to people you care about.

Be open and flexible. Most people are eager to settle into comfortable routines. Remember that your present rou-

tine could be only t e m p o r a r y.

Something may happen at any time that can force you to change your routine. You may not be able to predict change, but knowing that change can happen at any time helps you accept and adjust when it does occur. Most life transitions are slow processes that take time.

Concentrate on the good things in life.

Don’t dwell on negative thoughts. A positive attitude helps you feel good about yourself and the life you live, and goes a long way towards improving your health.

Take control of your life. What can you do now to help you through a difficult transition in your future. Practice finding the good in each of our life’s transitions. It’s not what you do to respond, but how you choose to respond!!

5 Hacks To Be A Better Daughter!

irstly, we should acknowledge that as a Muslimah, our first and foremost role is to worship Allah but then immediately after fulfilling these obligations, serving our parents is the best honour we can have.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do” [Qur’an Chapter 29: Verse 8].

Allah has endowed upon women so many challenging yet rewarding roles, but we often overlook that being a good daughter is one of the best ways in which we can worship Allah – whether you are a married woman with demands from your in-laws or a single Muslimah who is looking to get married – remember that you can live your life’s true purpose by looking after your parents.

As a working Muslimah, I have been fortunate and blessed to have parents who have always supported me in my work endeavours; however, I realise that some of us can take our parents for granted and this can lead to us neglecting our duties towards our parents even though we may not have intended to do this. So, here are a few hacks I have adopted to fulfil my obligations towards my parents: 1. Prioritise your parents over other tasks One of the biggest lessons I have learnt as a Muslimah is that despite the demands on our time from work, personal goals and other aspirations – we must do our best to prioritise our parents over other less important tasks. It isn’t easy! However, making sure you are flexible and checking in with your parents before making other commitments outside of work life can really help you manage your family tasks and fulfil your duties to your parents. I often block out time in the weekend to see if my parents need anything and follow up on any outstanding

tasks. It also helps to have an understanding employer who will be able to understand that your family comes first so there may be times where you need to prioritise them over work.

2. Communicate regularly I find that there’s nothing better than a cup of tea with my Mum or chat with my Dad on a quiet Sunday to build a positive relationship with your parents. It’s very important to have open and honest communication with your parents, and I’ve been fortunate to be able to have a very close relationship with both of my parents. Even small chats and giving your parents time can help them to realise that they are not taken for granted – as parents get older all they want is your attention just as you wanted all of theirs as a child! Something as simple as going for a walk in the park or sitting in the living room talking about life in general regularly can remind them that they are still the most important people in your life as you get older and preoccupied with other commitments in life.

3. Be patient and good to them I’ve met many sisters who have challenging family circumstances, some have hopes and dreams of accomplishing certain goals or careers in life which their parents do not support whilst others find themselves constant-

ly battling the expectations their parents have of them whilst trying to practice Islam (trust me I know it’s a long battle!). We may fall into the trap of shaytan – talking back to our parents, arguing with them when we disagree on a matter or even saying hurtful things to them. But we must remember that Allah says in the Qur’an that even when our parents do not not necessarily see things the way we do, it is important to still be kind and good to them. Sometimes I have found that all it takes is a kind word to acknowledge that your parents want what is best for you so we should strive to obey and please them unless their orders go against a command of Allah. Ultimately, none of us can be perfect daughters (as much as we may try to be!) because perfection belongs to Allah alone. We can however do our best to please our parents with good words and kind treatment.

4. Give them quality time One hack that has helped me recently to have better work life balance is to schedule outings and quality time with my parents. This could be something simple and low-budget by taking your parents to the mosque, having brunch in your favourite cafe or scheduling a shopping trip to treat them. This should be time where you give them your undivided attention and make them feel

like they are worthy of your time no matter how busy you may get in life. After all, your parents most likely spent most of their lives sacrificing and giving up their own time and desires to care and provide for you. Spending time with your parents, especially if you don’t live with them, is something you try to do even if it means a regular phone call to let your parents know that you are thinking of them and that you are there if they ever need you. This is a huge positive booster in being a good daughter.

5. Shower them with gifts and du’a There is a profound hadith which highlights how we will never be able to be truly grateful for everything our parents have done for us especially when we were younger. To this day, my father will ensure all my siblings are given an equal share in anything he buys. It is then only befitting that we do our best to attempt repaying them by gifting them with things they like – cooking them dinner, buying clothes, flowers (I love to buy unique roses for my mother) or spending on them by taking them on a trip to ‘Umrah or to Hajj – a journey of a lifetime.

Finally, the best thing you can give them is your prayers, as Allah says we should always recite: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small” [Qur’an Chapter 17: Verse 24]. We must remind ourselves that making du’a for our parents is one of the best actions we can do for them whether our parents are still with us today or have departed from this world as the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When a human being dies, all of his deeds are terminated except for three types: an ongoing sadaqah (charity), knowledge from which others benefit, and a righteous child who makes du’a for him.” [Muslim] Source : ProductiveMuslim

Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman (RETD)Author of “PAF Compass”

Sqn. Ldr. Nusrat Hussain (R) ranch Rickey, an American baseball player once said, “It’s not the honor that you take with you, but the heritage you leave behind.”

Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman served as twenty first Air Chief of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) from 19 March 2015 to 18th March 2018. He leaves behind a rich legacy that would better serve the future generations of Pakistan Air Force.

One day I saw his picture in one of the newspapers of Pakistan where, in uniform, he was sitting at the feet of a mother of a Pilot who had embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.

Few days later, I received a video in which the Air Chief Marshal was himself flying in a mission against terrorists entrenched in the mountainous region of North Waziristan. It made me his fan and a desire to meet him emerged in my heart.

On the morning of 7th September 2017; Pakistan Air Force Day, after the launch of my book The Last Salute at PAF Base Nur Khan, I came across the Air Chief at a dinner party held to celebrate the Air Force day at the beautiful lawns of the Air Head Quarters mess in Islamabad. My course mate Air Commodore Amjad Bashir introduced me to him and informed him about the book launch from that morning of The Last Salute. I expressed my desire of personally presenting him the book at a time of his convenience. Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman asked his Personal Staff officer (PSO) Air Commodore Jahangiri to coordinate a meeting.

A few days later, I received a call from the PSO who informed me that he had arranged a slot of twenty-five minutes meeting with the Air Marshal. I was also informed that the Chief would himself call to confirm the meeting. After some time I received a telephone call from Air House and was told that the Air Chief would like to talk to me. He was very humble and gave me full protocol of a senior by calling me Sir. Maintaining my seniority, I responded by calling him ‘Chief ’ or using his first name. This is a great tradition of the armed forces that once a senior always re-

mains a senior. This seniority is established on the first day of joining your service at the PAF Academy. Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman belonged to 69th G.D.(P) course and was 5 courses junior to me in the Air Force.

We talked for a few minutes where I described The Last Salute and my life after leaving the Pakistan Air Force. He extended the invitation to visit him at the Air House. Upon arrival at the guard room, I was escorted by a Provost Jeep leading ahead with flashing lights on top.

After hearing about The Last Salute, the Air Chief said to me; “Sir, since you have penned a book, I would like to present to you a book that I too have written, and I think you would be able to appreciate it as an author.”

He handed me a book titled ‘PAF Compass.’

After reading the book, I concluded that PAF Compass is a kind of constitution that can be adjusted by few degrees by reviewing after every three years. A periodic course correction in strategies can be made according to the changing environment. In my opinion this declaration in the document has provided permanence to the manual.

Aman explained the idea behind writing this manual: During one of the routine inspection of an Air Base, a young Flight Lieutenant asked the Air Chief Marshal that how it can be assured that policies driven under his command would maintain continuity.

Aman’s obvious response was to mention his great team being trained under his command.

The young Flight Lieutenant followed up with another question asking, if the Air Chief had done something towards legalising his chain of thoughts. The question stuck in his mind and after returning from inspection, he came up with the idea of introducing PAF Compass as Air Force Manual.

Aman instantly captured my attention when he started to explain the logic for using the word compass. The compass installed in an aircraft provides guidance for direction. His idea of producing PAF Compass and installing it as Air Force Manual has made it a legal document of direction for all the PAF personnel to follow for years to come.

What surprised me most was his number one topic ‘Value System’ that immediately appeared after the foreword in the Index of the Manual. In his introduction to Values, he relates it to the Islamic values built on character and recounts the Battle of Badar won by the Muslims despite a ratio of 1:3.

As a student of philosophy, it wasn’t difficult for me to connect his value system with Ethics, which is a branch of philosophy. The

PAF value system after acknowledging the services of its predecessors, revolves around leadership qualities, communication with the under command, respecting merit, promoting respect for martyrs families and retired personnel. The Value system further encompasses moderation in thought and integrity with accountability and austerity.

After establishing a value system, the book moves on to nationhood- it can be inculcated by holding mass meetings by the commanders with the personnel under their command and by loudly singing the national anthem.

Coordination with other sister forces, helping local governments in calamities, promoting the use of the national language, use of education squadrons in keeping motivated with true Islamic values to its personnel deployed on security duties are some factors described to install nationhood in the organization.

It is after forming a solid foundation of values and nationhood that the manual progresses to operational preparedness for the Pakistan Air Force. The manual enforces a responsibility on the commanders to visit once a month the units that are under their command and guide them towards understating the Air Head Quarters policies for war preparedness.

The manual further discusses in detail about the importance of developing education and the well-being of its Human Resources.

The manual concludes with what I personally deem the most fascinating subject for me. It speaks of providing Empowerment to its personnel. A concept of Centralized Control and Decentralized execution is introduced. I have practical experience of dealing with the concept by living in North America for over twenty years, but never before had I read it explained in this manner. Centralized Control means provision of direction by the highest level of command under a given set of circumstances. Decentralized execution means that a lower level commander, faced with those circumstances can take an instant decision under the guidelines provided by the highest level of command.

By:Zafar Alam Sarwar, Islamabad There are many Pak and Kashmiri elders in Rawalpindi-Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi who reminiscence the crucial days of struggle for freedom from imperialist rule before and after 1940.

Then ‘daal-roti’ might have been problem for ordinary citizens, but they cared for each other’s welfare. The same spirit of brotherhood and self-determination as witnessed on February 5 every year is notable.

Educated youths caught hold of city olds the other day and asked them repeatedly

why they and most politicians had forgotten Chaudhry Rahmat Ali---the young student credited with creating the name of Pakistan.

Why was he harassed when he came from England to Pakistan after it was achieved?

How he returned dejected and died on February 3, 1951.

Octogenarian Khawaja Shahid of Lahore, who had served the British government in Delhi until independence, told the inquisitive youth that the forgotten hero was born in November 1897 at Mohar village in Hoshiarpur. After early education he joined the Islamia College, Railway Road, Lahore, worked as part-time staffer in the Paisa Akhbaar, and was also on the editorial desk of the Kashmiri Gazette to overcome the financial problem. He also joined the Law College, and later he served

as House Master in the Atchison College.

The young man left the job in 1930 and went abroad for higher studies, and got admission in Emmanuel College of Cambridge on January 5, 1931as an affiliated student from the University of the Punjab. He did his graduation and passed the M.A. examination from the same institution. He became a Barrister-at-Law in January 1943 from the Inner Temple Inn, London, where Quaid-iAzam Mohammad Ali Jinnah also had studied.

The unforgotten hero launched the Pakistan National Movement (PNM) and published several pamphlets on partition of the subcontinent. It was he who coined the word “Pakistan”, and presented his ideas for the first time in a circular letter dated January 8, 1933 to the members of the Joint Parliamen-

had downed a drone entering in her territories. The Air Chief wasn’t asked for clearance of taking it down. The action was executed under clear guidelines provided by the Air Head Quarters. The Air Chief wasn’t informed instantly as the incident took place at an odd hour. He was informed later and there wasn’t any objection as the decision was well within the policies of engagement. This was a different Air Force than the one I left some twenty eight years ago in 1990. The Air Chief, in my opinion has provided the basic philosophy of engagement by introducing the Manual.

I was impressed by his short figure with serious deep eyes and humble nature. Out of deep love and respect for him, I placed my arm around his shoulders and whispered, “Sohail, I am using my privilege of the senior.” He smiled in return and gently brought his arm around my back when the photographer clicked our photo together. One of my very senior retired officers raised a serious eyebrow at the picture. My response to him was, “Sir - I would only do it to a person who earned my extreme love and respect from my heart.” This meeting that was scheduled to last only twenty-five minutes actually lasted for about an hour.

I wanted to write this article earlier when Aman was still in office, but I held back my thoughts for his retirement that was approaching soon. In my opinion a true tribute is most appropriate when the person walks out of his office of power. I wish all the best to Air Chief Marshal, Sohail Aman (R) and hope to see him in the political arena of Pakistan one day.

When the British parliament was finalising the Government of India Bill 1935, Ch. Rahmat Ali, founder-president of the PNM, distributed a four-page letter among the members of Parliament, leading officials as well as dignitaries of the foreign countries in London.

His active struggle for Pakistan, the Pakistan National Movement, and united work of his associates and friends to join hands with M.A. Jinnah generated the interest of the masses in his performance and personality.

The son of a peasant---who fought for freedom and dreamed an exploitation-free state not ruled by any blood-thirsty feudal lord and power-hungry capitalist---breathed his last on February 3, 1951, and was buried as amanat (trust) at Cambridge.“How cruel we are to such heroes?” say angry youths.

Kashmir & Palestine Conflicts

By:Aasim Sajjad CARCELY a day goes by in Pakistan that we ordinary mortals are not reminded about the Indian state’s brutalities in Kashmir. This past week saw yet another orgy of violence in which it was reported that more than a dozen unarmed protesters were killed by Indian army fire. By all accounts Kashmir remains the Indian state’s Achilles heel, a blot on the collective conscience of India’s democracy.

Successive generations of Pakistanis have been bred on a narrative that there is something exceptional about the reign of state terror in Kashmir, with only the Israel’s colonial subjugation of Palestine approximating something similar. In both cases, the operative factor is that Muslim lands are being occupied by ‘infidels’, that the honour and dignity of Muslim peoples is being violated.

Yet on closer inspection — and recourse to history — it becomes clear that state terror against dissident populations is the norm rather than the exception. More generally, political alignments amongst the global elite, as well as the resistance of the oppressed, have little to do with religious affiliations per se, even if the state and right-wing forces exploit and politicise cultural difference, thereby reducing space for collective action along expansive lines. The Saudi crown prince’s admission of Israel’s ‘rights’ confirms what we already know — that Muslim rulers in both the Arab and non-Arab world have been least concerned with the Palestinian cause since the 1973 war. Compare this to a bygone era and the consistent positions taken by (non-Muslims) Gandhi and Nehru vis-àvis Palestine. Both explicitly condemned Is-

rael’s settler colonialism, and in a 1938 letter Gandhi even conceded that the Palestinian national movement retained the right to resist Israel’s violent occupation of Palestinian lands in kind.

Conscious agents of change everywhere challenge injustice. That was indeed another time, when anti-imperialist principles informed the political instincts of at least some newly independent countries like India. Unfortunately, the Indian state under Nehru had a far more dubious policy towards Kashmir — as well as states in the northeast like Assam and Nagaland — that has, over time, become even more so. But this is not because Indian state policy has historically been driven by a determination by who is Muslim and who is not. India’s Kashmir problem has more to do with basic questions of self-determination and democracy, and what is changing under Modi is precisely the fact that the already existing authoritarian tendencies of the Indian state are being fused with a toxic dose of Hindutva in a way that would make Nehru and Gandhi turn in their grave.

The history of the modern state everywhere is a deeply contradictory one. India, for instance, is more democratic than Pakistan, but this only means that there is a democratic streak in Indian politics that is more resilient than in Pakistan. Indeed, it is this democratic streak that explains the resistance of some intellectuals and political activists within India to their own state’s suppression of the Kashmiri — and other — people’s democratic aspirations. It is because conscious agents of change everywhere challenge injustice and oppression within their own societies that gives the world a chance of rising beyond the

hate and bigotry espoused by right-wing fanatics, whether they be mobs led by mullahs, Hindu supremacists or Zionist crusaders.

Perhaps even more importantly, it is such principled resistance that allows us to expose and then challenge the might of exclusionary nation-states operating without impunity at the service of power and money. Hawks in Pakistan may talk up the Indian state’s brutalities in Kashmir to give credence to the Pakistani state’s militarism just as the Indian state drums up jingoistic sentiment on that side of the border by reducing Pakistan to an abettor of terrorism. Whichever side of the border one is on, half-truths are embellished to ensure enforced loyalty to the state, the result being that emancipatory causes are stifled by the parochialism of religious, ethnic and other identities.

So let us celebrate those Israelis with a conscience that stand in solidarity with the Palestinian national movement, as well as those Indians that continue to call attention to what is happening in India-held Kashmir, Nagaland, the Maoist corridor and elsewhere. They do so not because they are Muslim, but because they are harkening back to the euphoric days when all colonised peoples stood together.

Where does this leave Pakistanis with a conscience? Can we afford to continue turning a blind eye to the reported excesses of our own establishments against the people that inhabit this land? It is mostly Muslims who suffer from state repression in our own conflict-ridden areas, mostly Muslims who are forcibly disappeared and Muslims like Mehr Abdul Sattar and Baba Jan who are criminalised for struggling for the poor. And even if they weren’t Muslims, would it matter?

By Alison Bodine On March 16th,, Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) brought peaceloving people together to mark 15 years since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Held at the downtown Vancouver Art Gallery, activists held picket signs and banners reading “U.S. Out of Iraq Now!” and “U.S. Out of the Middle East!” During the program, speakers called attention to the impact that 15 years of brutal war has had on the people of Iraq. Speakers also drew attention to the last three years of a brutal Saudi-led, U.S.backed war and bombing of Yemen.

The spirited rally appealed to people walking by to get more information about the Western wars and occupations in the Middle East and North Africa. People were also encouraged to sign MAWO petitions against war; including one demanding an end Canada’s continued involvement in the occupation of Iraq and another demanding Canada end its $15 billion arms deal with Saudi

Arabia. Throughout the rally chants of “No to War and Occupation, Yes to Self-determination”, “U.S. Out of Iraq Now!” and “Stop Bombing Yemen Now!” echoed throughout downtown Vancouver.

Every month MAWO is out on the streets, rallying and petitioning to demand an end to U.S.-led wars and occupations. The next MAWO action is a rally organized as part of a coordinated international period of action, known as the “Spring Mobilizations to End the Wars at Home and Abroad.” At 5pm on Friday, April 13 at the Vancouver Art Gallery (Robson Street and Howe Street, Downtown Vancouver) MAWO invites all peaceloving people to join us in demanding “Stop the Wars at Home and Abroad!” “Money for Jobs, Healthcare, Education, Housing & Environment! No to War and Occupation!” and “No to Islamophobia!”
