‘Toronto van attack latest incident of vehicle used as weapon
Cities increasingly looking for ways to place barriers between vehicles, pedestrians Preventing people from using vehicles as deadly weapons is a difficult task for law enforcement officials, experts say. Cars, trucks and vans have been used to ram people more than a dozen times around the world in recent years, often with deadly results similar to those in Toronto on Monday. Federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said Monday night that what happened does not appear to be connected to national security, but he called the incident a “horrific attack.” Not all recent vehicle attacks have been linked to terror groups, said Candyce Kelshall, an adjunct professor with the terrorism, risk and security studies program at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. She said there have been at least
three incidents in Germany in recent years involving people who have driven cars into groups or buildings, but did not have any connection with ISIS militants or other terrorist organizations. ‘Difficult thing to police’ Regardless of the motive, it’s tough to stop someone from using a vehicle to kill, Kelshall says. “You can’t stop people driving cars or walking on streets,” she said. “It’s a difficult to thing to police.” Vehicles are a popular weapon because they’re accessible, says Alex Wilner, an assistant professor with Carleton University’s Norman Paterson school of international affairs in Ottawa.
Emergency personnel and bystanders rushed to help the injured after a van plowed into pedestrians near a busy Toronto intersection, according to eyewitnesses who saw the chaotic, bloody scene unfold on Monday afternoon.
“But I don’t think they were still alive.” The van travelled south, where Dainis Cevers said it cut him off near Parkview Avenue. He saw it strike another man, thought to be homeless, as he was crossing the street. “The [van] comes from the second [lane], accelerating fast, going towards this homeless guy,” Cevers told CBC News. The victim “flew up, flew up in the sky,” when he was struck. Cevers said he stopped and tried to help. “I tried to see if the guy was OK, but he was bleeding from the head — unconscious, eyes open.” Others came to help and called 911, he said, as the van continued south at high speed, crashing into vehicles on the west side of Yonge Street. “There’s nothing I can say. I feel terrible,” Cevers said. The van narrowly missed Vasiola Bibolli as she was leaving a nearby Starbucks. She hadn’t seen the van coming, but a friend snatched her out of the way. “She was like, ‘Oh my gosh, watch out!’” Bibolli told CBC’s As It Happens.
“It’s deadly, it’s easy and it’s cheap. So, if you put the math together, it doesn’t take a lot to kill people.” Cities are increasingly looking for ways to place barriers between vehicles and pedestrians, Wilner said. In some places, garbage and fire trucks are being put in place at entrances to festivals or markets, he said. Similar safety measures were in effect in Toronto on Monday night, with streets closed near the Air
Canada Centre where the Maple Leafs were playing an NHL playoff game agains the Boston Bruins. ‘A criminal will try to take whatever they can’ Wilner said several vehicles used in recent attacks have been rentals, and there may be some appetite for creating a registry to help prevent similar occurrences. What a registry or database would look like is unclear, he said. Mubin Shaikh, an expert on counterterrorism, says he thinks a no rental list would be a reactive measure that would have minimal impact. If there are restrictions on rentals, people can still borrow or steal vehicles, he notes. “A criminal will try to take whatever they can, however they can,” he said. “Will it deter the determined attacker? Probably not.” Source:cbc.ca/news/canada
‘I saw people go flying’: Witnesses describe Toronto van attack
“I saw the van exactly on the sidewalk,” said Kasra Ebrahimi , a student who was a few blocks south of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue, near Byng Avenue, at the time of the attack. “It hits people, it looks like movies. I saw people go flying … people were screaming and yelling,” he said. Four or five people were left on the ground, said Ebrahimi, who watched as police and ambulances arrived and tended to the victims.
Moments later, the van struck another two pedestrians, including an old woman. “Then people really started to panic,” she said. “The sidewalk is always packed around lunchtime, so it was full. And people are screaming and yelling.” Closer to Sheppard Avenue, student Amir Bahmeyeh said he was coming from the subway when he saw “the crazy van” hitting people “one after one.” He didn’t get a good look at the driver but said “he drove really fast, like crazy,” and hit five people at about the same time near Mel Lastman Square. “I almost have a heart attack,” he said Bahmeyeh, who is originally from Iran. “When I came here people told me it was a safe country … the people are friendly. That is why I stay here. Now, I saw the accident, maybe I’ll go back to my country. There are not problems like that.” ‘She tried to stand aside’ Nana Agyeman-Badu, a driver
who was dropping someone off in the area, saw some of the carnage along the busy Toronto street. Agyeman-Badu told CBC News he saw the van driving on the walkway. “I was thinking, why is he driving there?” He said he thought perhaps the driver was making a delivery, but then the van kept moving. Agyeman-Badu drove away and parked next to a bus shelter. A woman was coming north, he said, and saw the van approaching. “She tried to stand aside, but she was not lucky ... she got pinned into the bus shelter,” Agyeman-Badu said. “She was pushed backwards, lying down, with all the glass ... broken glass on top of her.” The van, he said, just kept “going and going and going.” He said he rushed out of the car to try to help, along with another driver who had stopped. The woman asked where she was, and they had to tell her she’d been knocked down by a van. Source:cbc.ca/news/canada

Correction to be Noted
In Miracle March 30, 2018 edition, the article on Page 7 , The Mi`raj of Holy Prophet (saw) took place in three parts by Allama Tahir ul Qadri mentions the following:
The journey started from Makkah, and on the way Holy Prophet (saw) stopped at Syria, which is where Ibrahim (as) was buried; he (saw) then went to Bayt al-Lahm [Bethlehem], which was where Isa (as) is buried, in Palestine. And then Holy Prophet (saw) visited Mount Sinai, where Musa (as) talked to Allah and had received Shariah. Allama Tahir ul Qadri later corrected his error in a video lecture ( https://youtu.be/LP9BeZjr1nI ( @ 38 min) that Isa’s is not buried in Bethlehem. However, it was not corrected on the website of Minhaj-ul-Quran. SC issues notices to Musharraf, Zardari
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to former presidents retired Gen Pervez Musharraf and Asif Ali Zardari on a petition seeking recovery of huge losses Pakistan had incurred after promulgation of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) 2007. The notices were issued when a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took up the petition of Feroz Shah Gilani, president of the Lawyers Foundation for Justice. The petitioner has named Pervez Musharraf, Asif Zardari, former attorney general Malik Mohammad Qayyum and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as respondents to whom the notices were issued by the court.
In his petition, Mr Gilani has requested the court to order recovery of huge amounts of public money misappropriated and wasted by the respondents through unlawful means already on record in different judgements of the Supreme Court and high court. Petition seeks recovery of huge losses national exchequer incurred after promulgation of NRO The petitioner contends that Mr Musharraf subverted the Constitution by declaring emergency followed by the promulgation of the NRO, arbitrarily withdrawing criminal and corruption cases against the politicians, including Mr Zardari, which caused huge financial losses to the national exchequer. According to the petition, since the Supreme Court in its landmark judgement of Dec 16, 2009 has declared the NRO void ab initio, the respondents are liable to compensate the losses and the damage suffered by the exchequer of debt-ridden Pakistan, including the loss of $60 million stashed in Swiss banks allegedly by Mr Zardari. Likewise, former attorney general Qayyum wrote a letter to the attorney general for Geneva (Switzerland) withdrawing criminal and civil proceedings against Mr Zardari, but the Supreme Court in its 2009 judgement held that Mr Qayyum had written the letter in his personal capacity, against the Rules of Business, 1973. The actions of Mr Musharraf and Mr Qayyum by promulgating the NRO caused huge losses amounting to billions of rupees to debt-ridden Pakistan. Both wilfully violated the oath of office to the detriment of the country in violation of the rule of the law, particularly of Articles 2, 2A, 25, 227 of the Constitution, the petition alleges. SC lashes out at security agencies for failing to submit new report on Faizabad sit-in
Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court on Wednesday lashed out at security agencies for “failing to produce a new report” on last year’s Faizabad sit-in. After a weeks-long protest at the Faizabad interchange that had disrupted life in the capital, the government and protesters reached an army-brokered agreement in November 2017, in which the former had conceded to the latter’s demands. Justice Isa is part of a two-member SC bench, along with Justice Musheer Alam, which has been hearing a suo motu case regarding the use of abusive language during the sit-in and the difficulties caused to residents of the capital by the roadblocks placed by the agitators. Justice Isa asked the deputy attorney general on Wednes-
day if the agencies had a report to submit. The deputy attorney general told the bench that no such report has been furnished because the court had not passed any orders in this regard. To this, Justice Isa said that the security agencies should have submitted a new report when the court had expressed its dissatisfaction over the previous report on the same issue.Who is paying you? Who is paying the InterServices Intelligence? No one should consider themselves above the law,” he said while addressing the deputy attorney general. “The army did not establish this country and the state will not be ruled on the whims and wishes of anyone.” “Read history to know how Pakistan was established; Quaidi-Azam was not surrounded by a brigade but a leadership willing to create Pakistan,” he said. Last month, the SC had rejected ISI’s report on the Faizabad sit-in, calling it “unsatisfactory”. “This report is deeply unsettling: it has been prepared by one of the premier agencies of the country, yet a journalist could have given more details [about the protests] than this report,” Justice Isa had said after reviewing the document.Taking about the inaction on part of the government against the Faizabad protesters, Justice Isa during today’s hearing remarked: “No one moves against them who block roads, resort to torture and torch vehicles,” he said. “Those claiming to be ‘Aashiq e Rasool’ used derogatory language — this is not Islam. They are enemies of Islam; they portray a horrible picture of the religion.” Source: dawn.com/
Pakistan, Russia agree to boost military cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to intensify bilateral military cooperation during meetings between the top military and security leadership of the two countries. The resolve to expand existing bilateral military cooperation was expressed when Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa opened his visit to Moscow with a meeting with Commander Russian Federation Ground Forces Col Gen Oleg Salyukov soon after National Security Adviser retired Lt Gen Nasser Janjualed delegation discussed key security issues with Secretary
of the Russian Security Council Nikolay Patrushev. It was Gen Bajwa’s first visit to Russia. His predecessor Gen Raheel Sharif had earlier visited Russia in 2015. The military contacts between the two countries that started in 2007 have strengthened military cooperation as seen from the joint drills of ground troops and the navies. In his meeting with the COAS, Russian Ground Forces Commander-in-Chief Colonel General Oleg Salyukov said his country was interested in expanding the existing military cooperation with Pakistan. Gen Bajwa, too, expressed Pakistan’s desire to enhance bilateral military engagements with Russia. The two countries had in February agreed to set up a military cooperation commission for promoting military cooperation. Both sides had signed a defence cooperation agreement in November 2014 and later inked military-technical cooperation accord, which allows arms trade between the two countries and cooperation in weapon development, in October 2015. The latest developments suggest that the engagement is all set to intensify. According to a Russian source, an intense programme has been developed for this year. The rapprochement between the erstwhile cold war adversaries was driven by Russian concerns about instability

Gen Bajwa praised Russia’s “positive role” in resolving “complex situations in the region”. The army chief, according to ISPR, told the Russian Ground Forces commander that Pakistan would continue to play its part to “keep conflicts away from the region and seek approaches which bring regional convergences into play rather than divergences”.The army chief ’s trip was preceded by the visit of National Security Adviser retired Lt Gen Nasser Janjua to Russia. Houthi political chief Saleh al- Russia issues more warnings against Sammad killed in Saudi air raids airstrikes on Syria
The political leader of Yemen’s Houthi rebels has been killed in Saudi-led air strikes on Hudaida province, the group has said. The Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV network reported on Monday that Saleh al-Sammad, the president of the Supreme Political Council that runs Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other rebel-held areas, was killed on Thursday. The group said it had elected Mahdi al-Mashat as Sammad’s successor. In a televised address later on Monday, the Houthis’ leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, said that, overall, seven people were killed in Thursday’s air raids. “This crime will not break the will of our people and state ... [and] will not pass without accountability,” he added. “The forces of this aggression led by Washington and the Saudi regime are legally responsible for such a crime and all its implications.” There was no immediate comment by the Saudiled coalition. Traditionally based in Yemen’s northwest, the Houthis overran much of the country, including Sanaa, in 2014, citing anger with the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. In March 2015, a coalition of Arab countries assembled by Saudi Arabia launched a massive bombing campaign aimed at rolling back the rebels’ advances. Since then, the Saudis have carried out more than 16,000 air raids, resulting in mass civilian casualties with weddings, hospitals and funerals targeted. The United States has been helping the coalition with weaponry and logistical support. On Sunday, two Saudi-led coalition air attacks killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens in northwestern Yemen, according to residents and medical personnel. Most of the dead were women and children who were gathering in a tent set up for a wedding party in
Hajjah’s Bani Qays district, a medical official told Al Jazeera. Hakim Almasmari, editorin-chief of the Yemen Post, said al-Sammad’s death was a “very significant” development. “He was the acting president in the Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, so this is considered the biggest blow for the Houthis, politically, since the war started,” he told Al Jazeera. Almasmari noted that the location of the incident was also important. “Hudaida is considered the most secure place for the Houthis, where they have all their intelligence,” he said. “This is a big backlash for the Houthis, security-wise as well,” he added. “It’s not a secret that Hudeida is much more secured than even Sanaa itself, so for him to be killed in Hudeidah, under all the extreme security measures that they go through there, [raises questions] whether they are infiltrated in Hudeida province itself or within the intelligence apparatus in general.” Almasmari also said it was not surprising that al-Sammad’s had been replaced by al-Mashat, whom he described as “a very influential figure within the movement”. Greenbelt Microgreens recall in B.C., Alberta, due to Listeria concerns VANCOUVER - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a recall warning for numerous salad-type greens produced by Ontario-based Greenbelt Microgreens. The agency says the greens were distributed in Alberta and British Columbia and may be contaminated with Listeria. There have been no illnesses linked to the microgreens. A release from the agency says Greenbelt Microgreens triggered the recall and an investigation is underway. Nineteen types of microgreens, sold in packages from 75 grams to 454 grams are included in the recall. Products range from arugula, broccoli, pea shoots, sunflower and wheatgrass microgreens to various mixes, all sold under the Greenbelt Microgreens brand. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Listeria contamination can can
Iran has softened its tone about whether the release of the US prisoners held in the Islamic Republic is negotiable while taking a tougher stance on the possibility of Washington walking away from a landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif suggested in an interview with CBS News aired on Sunday that a prisoner swap could be negotiated if the US dropped its “regime change” rhetoric. He said Iran wants to see “respect” before considering entering any talks about prisoners with the administration of US President Donald Trump. “You do not engage in negotiations by exercising disrespect for a country, for its people, for its government by making claims, including this illusion about regime change.” The US administration has openly said in the past that its policy towards Iran is to support “elements” inside the country “that would lead to a peaceful transition” of the Iranian government. Trump has also indicated that he wants to fill key roles within his administration with figures who have been outspoken advocates of such a stance. There are at least five prisoners, four Americans of Iranian descent and a US-Chinese dual citizen, imprisoned in Iran, all on national security charges. There have been concerns over the health of octogenarian Baquer Namazi, a former UNICEF representative who was arrested in 2016 and underwent heart surgery later in 2017. Zarif said despite Iran’s judiciary being an independent body, the government had been “trying to use our influence from a humanitarian perspective, first of all, to make sure that the health requirements are taken care of; as well as to see whether a humanitarian agreement can be reached”. Trump is under pressure from the families
of those in Iranian prisons as they see no sign of effective efforts leading possibly to the release of the detainees despite the US president’s campaign promise. The US government did try in December 2017 to negotiate the issue with Tehran through a direct channel. However, Iran turned down what Zarif refered to in his recent interview as a “demand”, adding that before making it the US needed to “learn how to treat other sovereign nations”. For the centrist government in Iran, which is dealing with a financial crisis shortly after getting past rare nationwide unrest, the survival of the 2015 nuclear deal is seemingly of much greater concern than the security threat intelligence and judiciary at home see in the Americans they have held in prison. Trump has until May 12 to decide whether to put back in place the sanctions that were removed as part of the pact. Analysts believe such a move might kill the deal altogether, especially now that Iran indicates it might accelerate its uranium enrichment if the US pulls out. “We have put a number of options for ourselves, and those options are ready, including options that would involve resuming at much greater speed our nuclear activities,” Zarif said in part of the CBS interview that was published Friday. “Those options are envisaged within the deal and those options are ready to be implemented and we will make the necessary decision when we see fit.” Iran had said in the past that it will stay in the deal in case of US withdrawal. French President Emmanuel Macron also said Sunday in a Fox News interview that there is no “plan-B” for the deal that he will try to persuade the US to preserve during a three-day state visit starting Monday. Vancouver police issue public warning after Toronto van attack
Police in Vancouver are urging residents to be aware of their surroundings in the wake of a van attack that left 10 people dead in Toronto Monday.“If you’re walking by yourself on the street, don’t have your head down, be aware of where you are and what you’re doing,” Sgt. Jason Robillard told The Canadian Press Tuesday. The warning comes a day after 25-yearold Alek Minassian allegedly drove a rented van over a curb and into numerous pedestrians in Toronto’s north end. Fifteen people remain in hospital as a result of the incident. The Vancouver Police Department said it does not yet have enough information about the attack to determine if or how it will change its security measures. Source: The Canadian Press
Almost 2,000 civilians from Myanmar’s Kachin community, trapped in a jungle while escaping clashes between the army and the guerrillas, are in urgent need of medical attention, the community leaders said. The latest fighting in the northern state’s Tanai town started earlier this month with government shelling and air strikes, in response to threats by the Kachin Independence Army to retake lost territory. Civilians from the Christian ethnic community are trapped without medicine or sufficient food, Mung Dan, a Baptist community leader, said on Wednesday. The trapped group includes five pregnant women, 93 elderly people, and other villagers wounded by mortar shelling, he added. “Even today, it’s been raining the whole day in our region and these civilians do not have any shelter yet and they are suffering from sickness as well,” he said. Awng Ja, member of the Kachin State Women Network, which helps displaced women, said the NGO’s request to rescue civilians has not yet been approved. “We have been asking permission to rescue people who are trapped in the jungle and they are in a very critical condition but the state minister said only if the military granted us access, we can rescue these civilians,” said Awng. An official from Tanai Baptist Church said many civilians are unable to flee. “There are still many people from the amber mines who are unable to leave. The people who have arrived
in Tanai were only able to leave via smuggling routes,” said the official. The Kachin Independence Army has been fighting on and off for decades against the government for greater autonomy. The fighting resumed in 2011, ending a 17-year ceasefire agreement. The clashes have left hundreds dead and more than 100,000 civilians displaced. Restrictions on humanitarian assistance to the displaced Kachin ethnic minority have been dramatically increased by the Myanmar government, according to rights and aids groups. Myanmar’s military has long been accused of grave human rights violations against ethnic minority groups in different parts of the country, including the Rohingya that critics say amounts to “ethnic cleansing”. Almost 700,000 Rohingya from the country’s Rakhine state have crossed into Bangladesh by the violent counter-insurgency sweeps by the army. Source: Al-Jazeera

ICBC legislation could solve financial ‘Nobody’s seen anything like this’: 10 dead, 15 injured in north Toronto van ramming attack crisis, says minister
B.C.’s attorney general says caps on minor injury claims and a push to an out-of-court dispute resolution could save the Insurance Corp. of B.C. from its financial crisis, though legislation he proposed Monday offered only a vague roadmap for achieving such a goal. David Eby said the legislation, if passed, would set a $5,500 cap on pain and suffering claims for B.C. motorists in minor crashes. It would redirect insurance disputes worth less than $50,000 away from expensive courtroom time and into a civil dispute resolution process. “We hope and are advised this legislation might get ICBC back into the black, which means the savings are in the neighbourhood of $1 billion,” said Eby. ICBC is expecting a loss of $1.3 billion once all the figures are in for the fiscal year that ended March 31. It blamed rising legal costs and accident claims. “The savings of getting the processes of minor injuries out of B.C. Supreme Court and into the civil resolution tribunal are so big that we can actually increase benefits that haven’t been increased in 25 years.” ICBC has a monopoly on basic automobile insurance in B.C. The government has warned that, unless there are reforms, motorists could face rate hikes of more than $400 to keep ICBC afloat. British Columbia was the last province in Canada with a purely litigation-based model, where drivers not at fault in a crash sue the at-fault driver for economic loss and suffering. Eby said the new savings estimate are possible because ICBC has been “refining the definition of minor injury” since the cap was first announced in February. But his legislation contained no concrete definition of minor injury, instead leaving the linchpin of the proposed law to regulations to be set by cabinet later. Much of the bill is similarly hollow, giving cabinet vast powers to set, change and otherwise redefine what constitutes a “minor injury” and the level of the cap as time goes on. “The intent of these regulation-making powers is to ensure the statute can remain up to date in terms of costs and changing scenarios that might take place,” said Eby. “We recognize other jurisdictions have changed their caps, for example, over time to reflect increased need to respond to the realities on the ground.” Advocates said Eby has already altered the government plan since proposing it in February, in an attempt to save money, by expanding what is considered a “minor injury” that falls under the cap and outside the courtroom. “The new legal definition will include things like sprains, strains, mild whiplash, cuts and bruises, anxiety and stress from a crash,” read a Feb. 6 government media release. “It does not include broken bones, brain injuries (concussions) or other more serious impairments.” Monday’s press release listed “abrasions, contusions, lacerations, sprains and strains, pain syndrome, psychological and psychiatric conditions or an injury in a prescribed class of injury, even if chronic” adding that the terms “will be further defined in regulation over the coming months.” The changes since Febru-
ary are concerning because they have widened what is considered a minor injury and therefore subject to the cap, said John Rice, a Vancouver injury trial lawyer who represents the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. He said the legislation “represents one of the most significant attacks on the legal rights of British Columbians in our province’s history.” “The proposed legislation goes much further than what was previously announced by Eby in February in making victims pay for reckless and distracted drivers,” he said. “Instead, ICBC and the NDP government want to cap even more injuries that British Columbians suffer because of someone else’s negligence.” Rice said the proposed legislation is “a form of no-fault insurance” and the promise to increase medical benefits is simply a cynical ploy to justify stripping away the right to sue. “If this legislation is passed as envisioned, it will have severe consequences for British Columbians. The only winners after today’s announcements are insurance companies like ICBC and reckless drivers.” Eby acknowledged the changes are a major shift. “We recognize there will be unhappiness on the part of many lawyers who engage in personal injury practice,” said Eby. “We’re not excited about this shift, this is a necessary shift, we have to do this. ICBC is in financial crisis.” Louise Craig, a Vancouver physiotherapist and spokesperson for group Rights Over Arbitrary Decisions (ROAD) for British Columbians, said it’s good that government keeps talking about increasing medical benefits for those involved in a crash, but the loose definition of minor injury in Monday’s bill remains concerning. “I think they are expanding it so that minor injuries encompass the vast majority of injuries that occur, and making the exception say a fractured bone or spinal cord injury,” said Craig. Monday’s legislation was also silent on reforms Eby floated in March that would change the way drivers accumulate no-penalty crashes and the time it requires to reclaim discount rates after an accident. The government had held public consultation on its proposals, including that drivers at fault in a crash would no longer be eligible to recover their full 43 per cent discount on basic auto insurance after three years of crash-free driving. Instead, it would take 10 years. Expanded health benefits to crash victims, such as doubling the amount for care and recovery, as well as expanding the overall lifetime medical care and recovery limits to $300,000 retroactive to Jan. 1 will also be set by cabinet regulation in the future. “These are huge changes for British Columbia, these are huge changes for ICBC,” said Eby. “We want to make sure we have the flexibility to respond as we roll things out.” Source: Vancouver Sun

The Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade and Surrey Vaisakhi Parade both celebrate Vaisakhi Day, which marks the Punjabi New Year in April every year. Surrey’s Vaisakhi parade broke attendance records Saturday, drawing a crowd of almost 500,000 people, including visitors from all over the world. Beginning before 9 a.m., 20 floats moved slowly through Newton, starting and ending at the Gudwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar temple late in the afternoon. The sunshine brought huge crowds to the streets, where families and businesses set up tents to offer free food and stages with various entertainment. “I’m shocked at the numbers,” said organizer Moninder Singh. “It has turned into an international event. People have heard about it and they want to be here.” Buses of people from Calgary, Edmonton,
Seattle and even California travelled to Surrey to celebrate. The multicultural crowd — which almost exceeded the population of Surrey — included visitors from around the world, as well as politicians of all stripes. For the first time, the parade was opened by the Kwantlen First Nation, which welcomed the event on its unceded territory, said Singh, adding he hopes the welcome will become a yearly tradition. In the afternoon, the crowds continued to grow, with traffic backed-up on roads leading into the area. Cellphone service was patchy likely because of the number of people at the event. Surrey RCMP reminded people to have a plan to reunite with lost children, explaining that in the past, officers have responded to dozens of incidents of missing children and elderly people. In 2018 the Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade took place on April 14th and the Surrey Vaisakhi Parade on April 21st. Both are highly recommended cultural events worth checking out. Both festivals are indeed very similar. They both attract over 200,000 people most years and feature close to two dozen parade entries which take most of the day to process from their respective parade starting points to their finishes. Both Vaisakhi Festivals also
begin at a Sikh temple where official ceremonies take place. The main difference between the two events, other than the fact that the Surrey parade is reportedly larger and happens a week later, is that in Surrey, in addition to the one-day parade, a carnival with rides takes place near the temple for the week or so leading up to the parade day.

FAITH 35)Chapter: Mentioning the Different wordings used by those who reported the Narration of ‘Aishah about that It was narrated that Abu Salamah said: “I asked Aishah: ‘Tell me about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah. ’ She said: ‘he used to fast until we said: he is going to fast until we said: He is not going to fast. He never fasted any month more than Shaban. He used to fast (all) of Shaban except a little, he used to fast all of Shaban.”’
Fasting in the Month of Shaban And Its Importance In Islam
T
he Islamic lunar calendar comprises of twelve months. Each month of the Islamic calendar has its religious as well as historical significance, however, there are a few months that hold a superior stature compared to other months and because of this they are given more value and respect by the Muslims. One of such months is the month of Shaban.
Significance of Shabaan
In Islamic calendar, Shaban is the eighth month which precedes the Holy month of Ramadan. It is one of the most revered months for Muslims and Muslims all over the world give value to this month and have special affiliation with it. Literally, the word Shaban means branch. It can be said that Shaban branches off and leads to other good things. Shaban acts as a connection between the two blessed and sacred months of Rajab and Ramadan. Despite this, the importance of Shaban is often neglected and ignored. The lines below discuss the element of fasting in the month of Shaban under the light of different hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Fasting in Shaban
One of the major acts that Muslims across the world do in the month of Shaban is fasting. Although Ramadan is the Holy month in which fasting is mandatory upon every Muslim, however, Muslims also fast
T
in different days of Shaban to fulfill the Sunnah of Holy Prophet Muhammad ( P BU H ) . It is narrated from Hazrat Usama ibn Zayd (RA) that he asked Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “I have never seen you offer fast in a month as you do in Shaban.” To which, Prophet (PBUH) replied: “It is a month people disregard that is between Rajab and Ramadan. In that month deeds are presented to the Lord of the Worlds, so I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting.” (Nasai) This hadith of Prophet (PBUH) gives the importance of fasting in the month of Shaban. Although Ramadan is the month of fasting and it is compulsory for people to fast, however, Shaban is another month, which people must also consider for fasting. It is in this month that the deeds of a person are presented in front of Allah Almighty, therefore, it becomes more than helpful if the deeds are presented at such a time when a person is in the condition of fast.
At another place Allah Almighty says: “ W h e n the Middle Night of Shaban arrives, you should s t a n d (Praying) in the night and should fast in the day following it.” (Ibn Majah) There are Muslims who only go for staying up at night and praying in front of Allah Almighty on the fifteenth of Shaban, however, they hesitate to fast and some of them do not fast. Although it is totally fine if they do not fast on the day that follows, however, if this hadith be analyzed properly, then one can observe that in this hadith both fasting and praying at night get equal mention and equal emphasis. Therefore, if one is to pray at night, then he or she must also try keeping a fast during the day to fulfill the whole hadith and gain countless blessings from Allah Almighty.
of other ways. Here is how fasting in the month of Shaban is considered an important.Fasting in Shaban gives you a chance to start preparing for the month of Ramadan. For fasting, you will have to wake up early on Fajr time, and spending day without eating and drinking, will give you a clear idea of what it would take in order to successfully spend the blessed month of Ramadan. In the month of Shaban, many Muslim scholars and others used to consistently recite and Read the Holy Quran along with fasting, which also helps in getting ready for fasting in the coming month of Ramadan. The famous religious scholar Imam Abu Bakr al-Warraq said: “In Rajab you sow the seeds, in Sha`ban you irrigate them and in Ramadan you reap the harvest.” Thus, a practicing Muslim must value the month of Shaban as it is proven from the hadiths of Prophet (PBUH) that this month is a special month and committing good deeds in this month carry special Getting Ready for Ramadan value and can help a Muslim gain countless in Shaban Though fasting is made obligatory in the blessings from Allah Almighty in addition month of Ramadan, but fasting in the to receiving pardon and forgiveness. month of Shaban is beneficial in numbers Source: http://www.quranreading.com
The Effects Of Reading The Qur’an
he present study consisted of two studies which investigated the effects of reading the Holy Qur’an on Muslim psychology students’ blood pressure, heart rate and perceived stress levels. Perceived stress level is the degree to which situations in a person’s life are appraised as stressful. The study was conducted because little research has examined the effects of reading the Holy Qur’an, and research that has been conducted is of low quality. For example, Vander Hoven (nd) a researcher from Netherlands hasn’t reported the findings from his research clearly. He briefly stated that “Muslims who can read Arabic and who read the Holy Qur’an regularly can protect themselves from psychological diseases”, but he gives no specific details of the evidence leading to this conclusion or the exact nature of the effects. In another research the sample consisted of 30 Muslim Psychology undergraduates from the
University of Salford. There were 15 males and females. The sampling method used was convenience sampling. A two factor (2×2) repeated measures design was used. In the first study participants’ took part in an experiment which was divided into two conditions. In one condition participants’ heart rate, blood pressure and perceived stress levels were measured before and after reading Surah Alam Nashrah and Surah Al Rahman from the Holy Qur’an. In the other condition participants heart rate, blood pressure, and perceived stress levels were measured before and after reading a non-religious material which was written in Arabic. The order of taking part in the two conditions was counter balanced. So half of the participants read took part in the non-religious material condition first and then the Surah condition. And the other half took part in the Surah condition first and then the non-religious material condi-

tion.Data was analysed using two factor Anova and post hoc t-tests. It was found that participants’ heart rate, blood pressure, (systolic and diastolic) and perceived stress levels decreased after reading Surah Alam Nashrah Surah Al Rahman from the Holy Qur’an. In contrast no significant effects were seen from reading the non-religious Arabic material. In the second study the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews to study participants’ subjective experience of read-

ing the Qur’an. 10 Muslim psychology undergraduates were interviewed. A content analysis conducted on participants’ responses to questions found that the most mentioned benefit of reading the Qur’an was that it educates and guides the reader to living a good life. It reminds the reader of their faith and it relaxes them. The researcher concluded that recitation of the Holy Qur’an appears to be psychologically and physiologically beneficial. It appears to reduce the readers perceived stress levels, heart rate and blood pressure. This effect cannot be found with the recitation of a non-religious material that is written in the same language as the Holy Qur’an. Reference Abdullah, R., 2009. Masjid Aulia Allah organised Meraj-Un-Nabi(saw) Conference
On April 14, the Al-Isra and AlMeraj conference was organised by Islamic Association of Western Canada in association with Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah in Surrey. The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Local Naat Khawans including Ahmed Raza Ahmed, Rayan Ahmed, Br, Sheryar, Br, Muzamil Ahmed and Mohammad Iqbal presented beautiful Naats in the honour of Holy Prophet (saw). Imam and Khateeb of Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah, Alhaaj Maulana Alama Abdul Latif Naumani spoke about the importance of Meraj with Surah Isra’a 17.1” Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa.” He said that Prophet Muhammad(pbuh), ascended to the seven heavens. His ascension took
place from Jerusalem. This miraculous night journey is one of the most important events in Islamic history because it not only established daily prayer in the Muslim way of life, but also tested the Faith of Muhammad’s companions. Our Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) cared about His “Umatti” everywhere. He also told everyone about the conevrsation of Prophet Muhammad (S.W.) with Prophet Musa (a.s) conversation to reduce from 50 to 5 times prayer a Day and said that 35 Hadiths exist about incident of Miraj. The main prominent speaker of the event Imam Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy who spoke about the Isra’ and Meraj in detail. He recited Sura Bini Israel verses and said that 5 pillars of Islam are our strong belief and faith. The Isra’ and Meraj is a practical
demonstration by Allah (swt) for us Which is started by “Amant tu Billah”, No one can share in attribute of Allah(swt). Other Prophets like Ibrahim (A.S) and Musa (A.S) and others they wanted to see Allah (swt) but couldn’t. At Meraj, Allah (swt) sent Angel Jibril to bring Mohammad(saw) Himself. The verse starts in Surah Isra’a 17.1 by “Subhan”. In our daily Duaa we say “O my Allah”, but here Allah used Abdahi “Exalted is He who took His Servant” So, Allah (saw) can do whatever HE wants. The Isra’ and Meraj of Holy Prophet (saw) took place in three parts, each corresponding to the tri-dimension persona of Holy Prophet (saw). The first part of the journey was from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa as is mentioned in the first verse of
Surah Bani Isra`il. This part of the Journey was to be known as the Isra. The second part of the journey, which is known as the Meraj, was from Masjid al-Aqsa to Sidrat al-Muntaha. The last and final part of the journey was from Sidrat al-Muntaha to Qaba Qawsain; this part of the journey is called I`raj. Syed Soharwardy also spoke about Shirk at the occassion. At the end, he invited everyone for Q &A session and answered many questions. At the end, Maulana Naumani made a heartfelt Dua for all those who attended the program and offered special prayers for the entire Muslim Ummah. Program was concluded with recitation of Salam to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SA)
Meraj-Un-Nabi(saw) Celebrates at Masid Anwaar e Madina
By: Saiyad Afroz The annual meraj-un-nabi jalsa was held at Masjid Anware Madina on the 21st of April. MC of the program was Saiyad Afroz Saifi and he led the program very nicely and in a timely manner. Afroz sahab emphasized the importance of having a pir , a spiritual leader. The program started after Asr prayer with the Quran recitation by Hafiz Yusuf sahab , followed by naats with zikr by Saiyad Zeeshaan , Saiyad Farhaan , Ali Ahmed, Mohammad Abbas ,Yaawar Yaqub. Naats was composed very beautifully and was full of spiritualism. Maulana Imroz Dean Saifi Naqshbandi presented his speech about the Divine ascension of the Holy Prophet , giving examples from Quran and Hadiths, He emphasized the reason for this great journey and the significance of it , and how the gift of namaz was given to the Ummah of Rasoolullag sallalahu alaihi wassallam. His focus
was mainly on At-taiyaat o lillahe wa-salawato - wa tayyibaat. He explained it in such a manner that everyone learned and understood how this ayat became part of our namaz, and the reason of the secret of ‘As-salaat al meraj ul momineen. “ After Maghrib prayer, Saiyad Farhaaz Dean , eldest nephew of Maulana Saiyad Imroz Dean and also a Talib-e-ilm , delivered a speech in English. It was very enlightening and informative, and he quoted many Quranic verses stating the grand ascension of the Holy prophet. At the end , Hameed Choudhry , of Edmonton, had some great words of wisdom to share with everyone, and he recited a very emotional naat . Justin Trudeau on Toronto van attack: All Canadians stand united The events that took place yesterday in Toronto were a senseless attack and horrific tragedy. On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of all those who were killed and we wish a full recovery to those injured and stand with the families and friends of the victims. I speak for every one of us in thanking the First Responders at the scene.
They handled this extremely difficult situation with professionalism and bravery. They faced danger without a moment of hesitation and there is no doubt that their courage saved lives and prevented further injuries. The entire community of Toronto has shown strength and determination in the face of this tragedy. All Canadians
stand united with Toronto today. Finally, I will note the excellent collaboration between all orders of government and law enforcement in the handling of this situation. We’re continuing to monitor it closely and work with our law enforcement Partners around the country to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians.
Standing up for B.C. jobs, protecting our coast, and working for you
VICTORIA. From day one, our government’s priority has been to make life better for people in B.C. That’s why we’ve been working hard to make your more affordable, improve the services you count on, and build a strong sustainable economy that creates jobs in every corner of B.C. And that’s why we’re standing up for B.C.’s interests in the face of the
Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. People in B.C. are rightly worried about a seven-fold increase in tanker traffic and the impact a heavy oil spill would have on our economy and environment. Tens of thousands of B.C. jobs, businesses and industries depend on healthy, oil-free, coastal and inland waters. A single spill on our coast would cost billions in economic activity and threaten jobs in tourism, fisheries, seafood, restaurants, retail, film and more. Anyone who plays on our beaches, digs for with clams their family, or takes fresh Dungeness crab home for dinner from the seafood market understands what we could lose. We’re taking responsibility and fighting for BC’s interests. That’s what our government
was elected to do. That’s what we’ve been doing, as best we can, for all of B.C. We believe that people should have a say in the things that happen here. We also believe that the interests of British Columbians — and all Canadians — should come before those in Texas boardrooms. That’s why we want to consult British Columbians about the transport of diluted bitumen, though B.C.’s land and water. Others disagree with this and they have that right. So we’re preparing a court reference to confirm our rights within our provincial jurisdiction. Defending our coast means defending our jobs, our economy, our communities, and our way of life. Whether a community was built on fish-
ing, forestry or mining, agriculture or small business, an oil spill will hurt all British Columbians, cost us tens of thousands of goodpaying jobs, and make it harder for people to get ahead. That’s a high price to pay. We believe a strong, sustainable economy should work for everyone, in every community in B.C., not just the few at the top. People in B.C. work hard every day, and they deserve a government that works for them. I’m proud to be a British Columbian and to stand up for the people of this province for now, and for future generations. Our government is working for you, and we’re going to keep working hard make life in B.C. better and more affordable, with more opportunity for the people who live here.
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Pierre PaulHus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to take immediate action to manage Canada’s borders and immigration system: “Canadians expect our immigration system to operate in an orderly, planned, and safe manner. “Despite repeated calls from Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to come up with a plan, Justin Trudeau has failed to take the appropriate action to manage illegal border crossings in Canada since his irresponsible
tweet last year. “It is projected that upwards of 400 people per day will illegally cross into Quebec this summer and instead of looking at real solutions like closing the loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement, or designating the entire Canadian border as an official point of entry, the Trudeau government has spent millions of taxpayer dollars on bandaid solutions. If Justin Trudeau had a plan to address the illegal border crossers, that money could have been put into health care or veterans services. “It is unacceptable to millions of Canadians who came here legally and played by
the rules, that the Prime Minister would encourage individuals to illegally enter our country. It’s also unfair to those families who are sponsoring loved ones through the family reunification program that their family members need to wait longer to come to Canada because Justin Trudeau is prioritizing illegal border crossers. “Since being elected, the Trudeau government has accumulated a deportation backlog of criminals in Canada, failed to provide the necessary resources to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, and refused to raise the subject of the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States.
“Canada’s Conservatives are calling on Justin Trudeau to take immediate action and table a plan to manage our borders and immigration system no later than May 11th.” By: Office of Michelle Rempel

Iqra Islamic School Students Shine in local Science Competitions
Won Gold Medal, 1st place at Science World: R to L: Ayan Ali (6/2),Saihan Desai(6/3), Javeria Ali (5/2), Hafsa Sajid (6/3) & Rayyan Fateh (6/3)

qra Islamic School students continue to join local competitions to demonstrate their interest and skills in math and science. Grade 5 and 6 students participated in “The Science Games” competition organized by EGBC (Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.) at Science World in Vancouver, And “Bridge Building” Competition at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. On February 24, 2018, Iqra Islamic School’s Grade 5 student, Ali Nadeem, took part in a competition called The Annual Popsicle Bridge Building Competition, hosted by EGBC (Engineers and

Geoscientists of B.C.). The competition took place at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. In Ali’s words, “It was an exciting yet a very nervous experience. I have never done anything like this before and I really enjoyed taking part in it. What we had to do was build a bridge that was at least 400 450mm’s in length. In addition, there were no limits for width and height. There were only three things that the judges were looking for and those were, best shape, best design and strongest bridge. When I heard about this competition from my Grade 5 teacher, Sr. Saniya, it sounded so fun that I wanted to register on the spot.” Even though Ali had not had any previous experience with bridge building, he still wanted to join. All the bridges were tested by a machine, which applied a continuous increasing load to the top and center of the bridge until it broke. The force applied was then recorded. Ali Nadeem won 3rd place for best bridge design. His prizes included a Frisbee, a pen, two certificates one for participation and one for winning, and a $50 gift card to Best Buy.
The Science Games competition also organized by EGBC (Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.) took place on March 10th at the Telus World of Science. There were two divisions. Division 1 which consisted of students from grades 1 to 3 and Division 2 consisted of students from grades 4 to 6. Each division had 16 teams, with 4 or 5 kids in each team. This year, a team of 5 students from Iqra Islamic School participated in the competition and won the gold medal. The students were Aayan Ali, Javeria Ali, Rayyan Fateh, Saihaan Desai, and Hafsa Sajid. Aayan, Rayyan, Saihaan, and Hafsa are currently in Grade 6 and Javeria is in Grade 5. Their team name was The Unknowns. Every team had to complete three activities. One was a take home activity and two mystery activities were given on the day of the Science Dames event. Take Home Activity: For this year’s take home activity, the students had to conduct research about earthquakes. Their objective was to find out more about what earthquakes are, how they are caused, where they typically occur and write a research paper about earthquakes with a bibliography. The students also had to design and make a supply launcher (so supplies could be delivered to an island). The kids made a catapult at home and on the day of the Science Games their task was to launch 20 ping pong balls in less than 3 minutes into a box (at 30 inches distance). Iqra’s team was able to put 19 balls in less than 2 minutes, displaying extraordinary teamwork. Mystery Activity 1 For this activity, the kids had to study about different angles. On the day of the Science Games, the students had to program a robot to roll through a maze using degrees and inches. During this activity, the kids assigned themselves different tasks and were able to finish the maze
very quickly. Mystery Activity 2 For this last activity, the kids had to learn about deposits in the Earth. On the day of the Science Games, they were given a play dough cupcake made up of different coloured layers of play dough. The students had to ‘drill’ into the cupcake with straws. The goal of this activity was to draw out their samples and make a diagram of what the inside of the cupcake would look like. Alhumdulillah, Iqra’s students performed exceptionally and showed excellent problem
solving skills at both competitions. Congratulations on winning the gold medal at the Science Games competition and the bronze medal at the Popsicle Bridge Building Competition and keep up the great work!

The health and religious benefits of circumcision
Q: Being not a religious person I wonder why (jewish and)islamic people consider circumcision obligatory. It seems to me that a muslim considers every human being as a perfect creation of Allah. So why doubt this perfection by changing God’s creation? I know of course about hygienic considerations, but I really hope that you can give an answer to my question. Thank you for your kindness. Ans:Praise be to Allaah. he Muslim obeys the command of Allaah. This is the meaning of Islam, which is submission to Allaah and obedience to His command, whether the wisdom behind it is clear to him or not, because the One Who is issuing the command – Allaah, may He be exalted – is the Creator, the All-Knowing, the All-Aware, who created mankind and knows what is good for them and what is not good for them. Circumcision is one of the rulings of sharee’ah which the Muslim carries out willingly, in submission to and out of love for Allaah, and seeking reward with Him. He is certain that Allaah does not command anything unless there is a wisdom behind it and it is good for His slaves, whether people know that or not. Since your question referred to the health benefits of circumcision, we will, after looking at the shar’i (religious) benefits, will answer your question about the health benefits, in order to increase the believers in faith in the ruling, and so that nonMuslims may see one aspect of the greatness of this sharee’ah (Islamic law) which came to bring benefits and ward off harm. 1 – The shar’i (religious) benefits: Circumcision is one of the commands concerning beautification enjoined by Allaah, which Allaah has prescribed for His slaves to make them beautiful both outwardly and
T
inwardly (physically and spiritually). It is the perfection of the fitrah (natural state of man) with which He created them, and hence it is the perfection of the haneefiyyah (pure monotheism) of the religion of Ibraaheem (Abraham). The origin of the institution of circumcision as the p e r fection of haneefiyyah was when Allaah made a covenant with Ibraaheem and promised to make him an imaam (leader) of man-
kind, and
promised h i m that he would be the father of many people, that prophets and kings would come from his loins and that his descendants would be many. And He told him that between him and his descendants there would be the sign of the covenant, which would be that every newborn male among them would be circumcised, and so the covenant would have this sign on their bodies. Circumcision is a sign of having entered into the religion of Ibraaheem, and this is in accordance with the interpretation of the verse (interpreta-

And we are His worshippers” [al-Baqarah 2:138] –as referring to circumc i - sion. For the haneefs (pure monotheists, i.e., Muslims), circumcision has the same status as baptism does f o r t h e w o rship-

h e cross (i.e.,
Christians). They purify their children – as they say – when they baptize them i n the baptismal water, and they say, now he has become a Christian. Allaah has prescribed for the haneefs their own rite, the symbol of which is circumcision. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “[Our Sibghah (religion) is] the Sibghah (religion) of Allaah (Islam) and which Sibghah (religion) can be better than Allaah’s? And we are His worshippers” [al-Baqarah 2:138] – … So Allaah has made circumcision a symbol of those who belong to Him and to His religion, and who attribute themselves to Him as being utterly enslaved to Him alone… The point here is that the religion of Allaah is haneefiyyah (pure monotheism) which fills the heart with knowledge and love of Him and sincerity towards Him, and worship of Him alone with no partner or associate, and which marks the body with the characteristics of the fitrah, namely circumcision, removal of the pubic hair, trimming the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the hair from the armpits, rinsing the mouth, rinsing the nose, using the siwaak (toothbrush made from twigs from a certain tree) and cleaning oneself after elimination of urine or faeces. So the fitrah of Allaah is manifested in the hearts of the haneefs and on their bodies. (Tuhfat al-Mawdood bi Ahkaam al-Mawlood by Ibn al-Qayyim, p. 351) Circumcision also has health benefits and brings a lot of benefits to the boy in his life. (See Question # 2425). It is not essential for the child to remain as he is when he comes forth from his mother’s womb, if there is something that may be done for him that serves a purpose and is enjoined by the pure religion. Such things include shaving his head after he is born, because that is in his best interests. The Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Remove the harm from him.” The same applies to washing the blood from him and cutting the cord by which he was attached to his mother, and other things which are done to benefit him. 2 – The health benefits: Dr. Muhammad ‘Ali al-Baar (a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in the UK and a consultant to the Islamic Medicine department of the King Fahd Centre for Medical Research in the King Abdul Aziz
University in Jeddah) says in his book al-Khitaan (Circumcision): “Circumcision of newborn boys (i.e., within the first month of life) brings numerous health benefits, including: 1 – Protection against local infection in the penis, which may result from the presence of the foreskin, causing tightening of the foreskin, which may lead to retention of urine or infections of the glans (tip) of the penis – which require circumcision in order to treat these problems. In chronic cases, the child may be exposed to numerous diseases in the future, the most serious of which is cancer of the penis. 2 – Infections of the urethra. Many studies have proven that uncircumcised boys are more exposed to infection of the urethra. In some studies the rate was 39 times more among uncircumcised boys. In other studies the rate was ten times more. Other studies showed that 95% of children who suffered from infections of the urethra were uncircumcised, whereas the rate among circumcised children did not exceed 5%. In children, infection of the urethra is serious in some cases. In the study by Wisewell on 88 children who suffered infections of the urethra, in 36 % of them, the same bacteria was found in the blood also. Three of them contracted meningitis, and two suffered renal failure. Two others died as a result of the spread of the micro-organisms throughout the body. 3 – Protection against cancer of the penis: the studies agree that cancer of the penis is almost non-existent among circumcised men, whereas the rate among uncircumcised men is not insignificant. In the US the rate of penile cancer among circumcised men is zero, whilst among uncircumcised men it is 2.2 in every 100,000 of the uncircumcised population. As most of the inhabitants of the US are circumcised, the cases of this cancer there are between 750 and 1000 per year. If the population were not circumcised, the number of cases would reach 3000. In countries where boys are not circumcised, such as China, Uganda and Puerto Rico, penile cancer represents between 12-22 % of all cancers found in men; this is a very high percentage. 4 – Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Researchers found that the STDs which are transmitted via sexual contact (usually because of fornication/adultery and homosexuality) spread more among those who are not circumcised, especially herpes, soft chancres, syphilis, candida, gonorrhea and genital warts. There are numerous modern studies which confirm that circumcision reduces the possibility of contracting AIDS when compared to their uncircumcised counterparts. But that does not rule out the possibility of a circumcised man contracting AIDS as the result of sexual contact with a person who has AIDS. Circumcision is not a protection against it, and there is no real way of protecting oneself against the many sexually transmitted diseases apart from avoiding fornication/ adultery, promiscuity, homosexuality and other repugnant practices. (From this we can see the wisdom of Islamic sharee’ah in forbidding fornication/adultery and homosexuality). 5 – Protection of wives against cervical cancer. Researchers have noted that the wives of circumcised men have less risk of getting cervical cancer than the wives of uncircumcised men. From al-Khitaan, p. 76, by Dr. Muhammad al-Baar. And Allaah knows best. Reference: Professor Wisewell, published in the American Family Doctor Magazine, issue no. 41, 1991 Source;’www.islamqa.info/

Questions to Ask Before Posting To Social Media
was a freshman in college when Facebook came out and I distinctly remember thinking, “why would I need this? I have AOL Instant Messenger and MySpac. Well, times have changed. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram (and a slew of other sites I’m not cool enough to know about) have simultaneously brought us closer together and driven us further apart. With the exception of a few universally offensive statements or pictures, it’s a rule-free zone where we can interact with society while accepting minimal personal responsibility for the implications of what we do. In absence of guidelines for healthy and polite social media etiquette, we are left to determine our own boundaries for navigating the seemingly endless opportunities available to us.Before we snap one more picture of our hot chocolate topped with a foam leaf, perhaps we would benefit from a brief pause—an extra 30 seconds to ask five simple questions might suggest it’s time to unplug, or at least reconsider when and how we use social media:
1. Am I seeking approval?
If you’ve taken an introductory psychology class, you’ve probably heard of B.F. Skinner and operant conditioning. Skinner suggested that we learn behaviors through reinforcement. When I seek validation through something I post and that little red flag starts popping up to notify me of each person giving me attention, it’s an addictive reward. And it works. I feel better, so I keep coming back for more. The next time I need to feel approval, I’ll return to the source that poured it out last time, and the cycle of reinforcement continues. What are the bigger needs asking to be met here? Maybe it’s a desire for community. Perhaps it stems from unresolved conflict with someone I love. Or maybe I just thrive on pleasing people and
us and God.
5. Is it kind?
is as exciting as theirs. Do you believe that in your core? If not, take a break. Deactivate your account for a couple months. Create space to reevaluate and look for answers in the places you’ll actually find them. Stop 2. Am I boasting? There’s sharing excitement and then there’s asking the virtual world to solve dissatisfacbragging. Truthfully, we each know which tion with the physical one. 4. He just wants me to hold an opportunity to love others in a way that him and see him. To feel his soft, chunky reflects truth. Or it’s an opportunity to show arms and to focus on the way his eyelashes them something quite different.Examine move when he blinks. When we interrupt your motivations and walk away before lunch with a friend in order to quote her on using social media as the adult version of Twitter, we invite hundreds of people into a conversation that could have been sacred; show-and-tell. and we miss the sweet memories that may 3. Am I discontent? Are you looking for something “better”? If have formed had her words remained simso, walk away. Nothing you will read, write ply between the two of us.Not every great or see is going to solve this one. Instead, ask moment needs to be shared. In fact, some yourself why you are discontent and address of the best times are most enjoyed privately. those needs. When we view social media If we suspend the present in an attempt to from a lens of discontentment, whatever we capture its beauty in 140 characters or less, find will be colored with bitterness and un- we sacrifice our experience of the moment gratefulness. Their lives will begin to look itself. We also rob each other of something brighter than ours, while our lives will take that has been lost in our digital age—keepon a sense of lacking.Let us not forget— ing a handful of memories between us and their world is as ordinary as ours and our life those we are closest to, or even just between hearing their praise. If your interaction with the internet is driven by a need for approval, consider healthier ways to address this issue and choose to stop reinforcing the unhealthy ones.
Let’s return to Paul and his call to love. “Love is patient. Love is kind.”Our culture tells us it’s our right to comment on everything, regardless of whether it was addressed to us and without consideration for how it might affect others. We’ve replaced faceto-face confrontation with sharp comments and mocking memes. We write demeaning tweets addressed to celebrities or openly criticize individuals we have never met, hiding behind the convenience that they cannot directly defend themselves and nobody is putting our personal lives on display for public criticism. We have been given covered space from which to throw grenades, without requiring us to take responsibility for the weight of our words, their effect on other people and their reflection on the society. A Better Way Social Media seems to be built around the idea that it can infiltrate nearly every part of our lives. And if we let it, that’s exactly what will happen. We are the ones who say when its reach becomes unhealthy. As children, our parents laid out rules for our protection and as adults we took on the task of caring for our own well being and personal growth. It’s our job to set boundaries and ask tough questions, tending to the bigger picture of our relationships and the way our actions reflect love for this world. It’s worth noting that these are questions we ask of ourselves, not criteria for interpreting and evaluating others. We cannot know their hearts anymore than they can know ours. Let us pause and give ourselves an honest moment to reflect—bringing discernment, love and wisdom to each picture and word we share.

The growing world with technology
T
By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker he growing world with technology which exposes your child to an never ending world of information and knowledge can often intimidate and overwhelm children. The changing economy and workplace requirements have placed tremendous amounts of pressure on the youth. Growing stressors include finding a career that is fulfilling, rewarding, sustainable, and secure. As parents, we can do all the suggestions screaming at us through magazines and posts on social media to alleviate pressure instead of adding stress to our children. We are faced with successful stories of career driven adults who broke the glass ceiling with the help of their parents who distanced themselves from the expectations of their child to become doctors or lawyers. The influence of social media cannot be ignored. There are artists, singers, interior designers, zookeepers, vets, small business owners, and more who make more money than the usual lawyers and doctors. By encouraging our child to make smart decisions and providing them with confidence, we can set the stage for our children to take over the world with their ambition and talent. Two Minutes Management Course (Worth A Thousand Dollars)! Lesson One. An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing?” The eagle answered: “Sure, why not.” So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit, and ate it. Management Lesson - To be sitting doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up. Lesson Two. A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the
turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.” “Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.” The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree. Management Lesson – Talking crap without any merit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there. Lesson Three. A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold; the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realise how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him. Management Lessons - (1) Not everyone who craps on you is your enemy. (2) Not everyone who gets you out of crap is your friend. (3) And when you’re in deep crap, it’s best to keep your mouth shut! W
e go to sleep each night and wake up in the morning to a new day with new opportunities - a day which is filled with power and freedom to choose. The minute we wake up, we can choose to get out of bed and make the most of our day or feel dread about the day ahead. This is nobody’s choice but ours. Generally, the way we start our day influences how we feel for the rest of the day. When you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to take a few deep breaths and find something that you’re grateful for (your children, partner, your health or nature outside your window). Take this time to be thankful for all that you have in your life instead of wasting your energy on thinking about what you don’t have. Instead of pouncing straight out of bed, simply observe your breath. Breathe in for a count of 4 to 5 and breathe out also for a count of 4 to 5 allowing everything to drop away. Notice how your breath enters your body, notice how your breath leaves your body, and notice the little pause between each breath. This will allow you to create a sense of peace within and it will also help get you into a good head space before your feet touch the ground. It feels good and it’s an amazing way to consciously set your energy and intention towards your day moving, follow this with a nutritious breakfast to kickstart your metabolism and fuel your body to face the day ahead. Get clear about your intentions for the day. For example you can intend to have a productive
day. You can intend to have quality time with your family and friends with no distractions or limitations. You can intend to have a fun and brilliant day. You can intend to have a calm and peaceful day. You can intend to learn something new or be helpful to someone. Whatever it is just be clear about what it is you want your day to be. In order to create, manifest, and attract it, you must first align your heart, mind, and spirit with your intention. In other words, you truly need to feel it! Many people don’t understand the power of thoughts, because they live every day on autopilot, doing most things out of habit, and therefore they create their reality unconsciously as if they’re wearing a blindfold. But whether we’re aware of it or not, we create our reality with our thoughts and behaviour. This means we have the power to choose to be a conscious, mindful creator and change our reality to what we really want it to be. Remember, you choose your thoughts, you choose your behaviour, you choose the outcome. And every choice you make determines how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally!! Justice for Asifa - Could this be India’s #Metoo moment?
Indians are Outraged in two recent rapes cases that has swept across India as politicians and police officers are accused of being involved in the horrific crimes. A similar outrage gripped the nation Five years ago where a notorious gang rape and murder of a 23-year old physiotherapy student took place on a bus in Delhi just after 9pm on 16 December 2012. The brutality of the assault stunned India and the press dubbed her Nirbhaya - the fearless one. The widespread demonstrations are calling for justice over an attack that happened in the disputed region of Kashmir and another allegedly involving a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP party. The mass protests #JusticeForAsifa were sparked as a police charge sheet revealed horrifying details of the alleged gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old Muslim girl, Asifa, in a Hindu Temple.
In another Rape case, a father died in police custody after accusing a BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar from the ruling BJP party of the abduction and rape of his 16-year-old daughter nine months ago. She attempted suicide in front of the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath house after failing to get any support from the Police. “Both cases have shaken the conscience of the nation, shaken the hearts and souls of people,” said Feroze Mithiborwala, an organiser of a protest in Mumbai on Friday. India registered about 40,000 rape cases in 2016, up from 25,000 in 2012, government data show. Rights activists say thousands more go unreported. Asifa’s case has really shaken the nation’s conscience since she was just a tender age of 8 years old and raped in a Hindu Temple and murdered in the most unimaginable way. As you might have been aware of the injustice that has taken place in Indian Controlled Jammu and Kashmir by 8 Hindu men accused of Raping a 8 year old Muslim girl in a temple and murdering to cover the crime. (Source AlAmeen Post) Alameen Post has taken a stand to demand justice for Asifa and #Justice4UnnaoKathua . On April 23rd Alameen Post held a seminar at Riverside Signature Banquet Hall Surrey. A guest speaker, Teesta Setalvad – Human Rights Activist, who visited from India spooked on Human rights violations. Few other Muslim organizations activists included Br, Musa Ismail, Br, Haroon Khan also addressed at this seminar and shown the solidarity and condemed the horrific crimes.
Teesta Setalvad honoured with medal of courage
Visiting social justice activist from India Teesta Setalvad was honoured with medal of courage by Radical Desi publications and Indians Abroad For Pluralist India at an event organized in commemoration of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on April 13. Held at the Surrey Central
Library, the event was organized to launch the Punjabi edition of Foot Soldier of the Constitution. Originally, authored by Setalvad in English, it was translated by Buta Singh in Punjabi. The book is a memoir of Setalvad based on her journey as a journalist and an activist who has
been fighting for justice to the victims of state repression. The Indian establishment tried to prevent her from travelling abroad by slapping malicious charges against her. However, she was finally allowed by the Indian Supreme Court to leave for Canada.

Arabic/Urdu Calligraphy Paintings Exhibition in BC“Peace & Harmony”
T
BC Pakistani Artist Mr. FAROOQ RAI
he 80th death anniversary of Allama Iqbal was observed on 21st April 2018 at the residence of a well respected community member, Farooq Rai in Richmond. On this special occasion the Consul General of Pakistan Dr. Mohammad Tariq, Pakistani media, executive members of the Canada Urdu Association and Iqbal Academy of BC
along with the office bearers of Pakistani community organizations were invited for an early preview of Arabic / Urdu Calligraphy Paintings Exhibition which is to be held in British Columbia in the coming months. The program started with the recitation of the Tilawat-e-Quran and Dua-e-Maghfirat for Allama Iqbal and all deceased Muslims. Farooq then displayed some of his collage art work paintings based on Allama Iqbal’s inspirational message. He has also tried to include the positive glimpses of Pakistan in his visual art work. Farooq was asked to
shed some light regarding his devotion and special ‘nisbat’ to Allama Iqbal. Chaudhry Niaz Ali Khan, who had a close relationship with Allama Iqbal, was Farooq’s great uncle. Farooq’s late father professor Rai Mumtaz Ali Khan wrote a book ‘Iqbal ki yaad’ in1940. It was pointed out for the sake of knowing our history in British Columbia, that it was March 1967 when the message of Allama Iqbal was first loudly heard in British Columbia during a memorable standing room capacity gathering at the International House at UBC, Vancouver. Farooq was the Coordinator of the historical event as outlined in his book, Pakistan to Canada: A Journey. The poster titled “The first significant Pakistani event in B.C- March 1967,” containing rare photos of the media coverage of the event was shown to the invited guest. There was a great reaction while viewing the photos reflecting back to the historic event more then half century ago. The importance of preserving our unique cultural identity and heritage in British Columbia was emphasized by everyone for our new comers and younger generation. It was apparent that Farooq has spent indeed a considerable time, energy, and financial resources in completing over 100 paintings for a worthy cause. It was quite obvious to those who attended that this art work project is done with a great passion and sincere commitment to raise awareness of our cultural heritage and to promote goodwill in Canadian society. Farooq also shared the positive news that a limited edition book and a short documentary containing paintings and brief information about Urdu/Arabic and Allama Iqbal etc., inshAllah, will be published this year. He also intend to translate his artwork into English wherever possible. This type of initiative will further promote and encourage the idea of sharing our unique valuable literary heritage in the mainstream. The whole initiative is completely a volunteer effort on Farooq’s part. He further stated that he would never sell the paintings even to recuperate his substantial cost as some have suggested that he should do. Instead, later on, he intends to donate some paintings for a good cause or worthy fundraising. It is his wish and a strong plea that
the community should immediately establish a place of their own and he has pledged that he would freely donate his large collection of paintings and other related valuable items to place like Pakistan House, or an Urdu or Iqbal Academy. Such a generous gesture was applauded by all present. He also emphasized again the need for youth and women’s active participation in community development and capacity building. The Pakistan Festival in August 2018 will also showcase Farooq’s paintings. It is also matter of our community’s pride that Farooq’s paintings have also been selected for display during the Richmond World Festival 2018 which is scheduled for the September Labour Day long weekend. This festival celebrate Rich-
ments and feedback. Everyone spoke highly of Farooq’s conviction and efforts to highlight and preserve our literary heritage. The art work which consists of over 100 collage paintings was very extensive and truly impressive in thought provoking quality. Farooq offered to hold further displays for any interested community groups or members at his residence. There is also recommendations to hold forums in conjunction with the exhibition to pro-actively engage the broader community about our particular areas of concerns, especially as it has been reported that Muslim Canadians are experiencing discrimination at an all time high. Farooq feels that more opportunities to share messages of peace and compassion will lead to us feeling more positively connected to each other. We need to diffuse intolerance with a mond’s significant cultural diversity and the positive and informed response. ‘world is invited to the party’ as stated in the Concluding the artwork preview, Farooq festival promotional material. The World and others felt that there is a critical need Festival was recently awarded Most Outstanding Event in Canada at the Canadian Event Industry Awards gala, as the Richmond World Festival is a free event that attracts over 25,000 people and features over six performance stages, an artisan market, and numerous fun activities. The Grand Rotunda of the Art Gallery will hold Farooq’s Arabic/Urdu Calligraphy Paintings Exhibition “Peace & Harmony.” The exposure to Arabic and Urdu languages along with visual art of our Pakistani and Islamic literature will be seen by thousands of people in a mainstream arena and will leave significant lasting positive impact on our community. for our ‘own place’ in the lower mainland. At the end of the display, everyone was The Council General, Dr. Tariq and all other given the opportunity to provide their com- guests in strong terms commended and appreciated Farooq’s significant volunteer contribution and commitment to promote our unique cultural identity and literary heritage. All spoke in unison about the importance and relevance of Allama’s vision and inspirational message. The guests also thanked Rukhsana Rai for her contribution in hosting and supporting Farooq’s ongoing tireless mission. Farooq was visibly moved by such feedback and sincerely thanked everyone for their encouragement and support.
Amir Khan drops Canada’s Phil Lo Greco in 39 seconds in triumphant return
Amir Khan made a blistering return to the ring by beating Phil Lo Greco by knockout inside 39 seconds at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. The 31-year-old had not fought for two years, since being beaten by Saul “Canelo” Álvarez in Las Vegas in May 2016, and he made up for lost time by knocking the Canadian Lo Greco down twice in the early stages. Khan, in his first bout on British soil since a points victory over Julio Diaz five years ago, sent Lo Greco to the canvas with a swift one-two combination inside the opening 30 seconds. The super-welterweight contest was over moments later as the Briton’s devastating hand speed pinned his opponent up against the ropes to ensure it was over moments after it had started. It meant Khan delivered an emphatic statement to Kell Brook, who was watching on from ringside, before a possible all-British grudge match between the two Matchroom stablemates. This was the first of a three-fight deal Khan had signed with Eddie Hearn and his promoter had conceded his fighter could not afford a fifth defeat on
his record. That never looked likely and there was no evidence of any ring rust from Khan either after he changed to the trainer Joe Goossen in the buildup to this bout. Lo Greco appeared stunned by Khan’s sheer speed from the outset and, as soon as he dropped him with a right hand, it looked like a foregone conclusion. There was an eight count on that occasion and moments after the two squared off again, a flurry of left hands from Khan ended it all. Khan first came to prominence when he won a silver medal in the lightweight division at the 2004 Olympics, thus becoming Britain’s youngest boxing Olympic medallist at 17. He won the WBA light-welterweight title in 2009 and the IBF title in 2011. His professional record is 34 wins (20 by knockout) and four defeats. After the fight Khan said: “I’ve been out of the ring for two years. I’ve never taken a day off the gym. I’ve had a hand operation and the hand felt good in the fight. “People just wanted to see me come back and I wanted to prove a point and come back. I’m two years out of the ring but I’m
back with a big bang.” When asked if he is targeting a fight against Brook, Khan said: “I want to become a world champion again so I want to fight the top guys in the welterweight division. I’m a 147lb fighter. I moved up to 150lb for this fight because I’ve not been in the ring for two years. That fight I’m not rushing and I’m not running away from. “I will fight Kell Brook and I will beat Kell Brook. I’m a better fighter
and a stronger fighter.” Brook responded by telling Khan he would make him see stars – a reference to Khan’s appearance in last year’s I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! “Amir, all the fans want the fight, I want the fight,” Brook said. “He can go in the jungle and chase stars but when he gets in there with me, I’ll make him see stars.” Source: The Guardian
