Ramadan, the Vitality & Spirituality Booster
he blessed month of Ramadan (Ramazan) is about to begun to give another golden opportunity for self-evaluation and spiritual growth. amadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which consists of 354 days in 12 months cycle. The month is spent in the hot pursuit of Taqwa by the devout Muslims all around the world for one month every year. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, and the days begin at sunset, so there is a slight chance of one-day in counting error depending on when the new moon is first sighted. The date on the (solar) Gregorian calendar varies from year to year. The month moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days annually. Pillar of Islam: Fasting during this month is one of the five pillars of Islam and is known to be month of reflection and complete submission to God Almighty. Fasting in the month is an essential part of fundamental Islamic obligations. The beginning and ending of the month may vary from country to country depending on the moon sighting. In Islam, fasting (sawm) is abstaining or refraining from certain things for a specified period of time. For example: While fasting, a Muslim is required to abstain from sexual intercourse, food and drinks of all kinds right from dawn to sunset time preceded by the intention (Niyyah). The mandatory (Dawn to dusk) fasting starts before the Sunrise (Fajer) and ends with Iftar at the Sunset ( Maghreb). Exemption:The young children, the sick and the elderly are exempted from fasting.
Realising the pain of starvation: The Ramadan fasting enables the Muslims to broaden their compassion for “the Hungry and the less fortunate.” That is why, the Muslims tend to generously donate to charity. It’s pleasing to know that hyper-participation in food drives for the poor during the month is quite usual, as Muslims are motivated to give out for the needy and hungry for the entire year. The Qur’an is recited by the Imam during congregational taravi prayers every night throughout the blessed month. Essence of fasting during Ramadan and its goal is summed up in the Qur’an just in one word: “Taqwa”-”O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may attain Taqwa.” (Qur’an 2:183). Taqwa is both an attitude and a process. In fact, the proper attitude of the Muslims toward Allah SWT denotes nothing but love, devotion, and fear. This clearly indicates that Ramadan-fasting like other religious practices in Islam is one of the best sources available to generate moral excellence to appropriately handle the daily routine matters including social interaction. Beyond doubt, one can achieve the best moral values and can easily become a role model for others provided there is no hypocrisy or double standards. If we are sincere towards Allah SWT, fasting in Ramadan helps us to improve self discipline and awareness about the plight of those have-nots who suffer from con-
stant hunger and deprivation. Indeed, the sense of spiritual fulfillment through a state of “TAQWA” becomes attainable with month long “fasting work-out” during the blessed month, because the first verses of the holy Quran were actually revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Ramadan. And, “Laaelatul-Qadr” is remembered as being the anniversary of that actual day, when the Quran was actually presented to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Also, the “Laaelatul-Qadr” is known as the “Night of Power” which usually falls on any odd dated night within the last 10 days of Ramadan. As sawm in Arabic means “refrain,” so Ramadan provides the Muslims with the best opportunity to learn that there is a lot more than just the ‘disallowed eating or drinking’ between the Sunrise and the Sunset. Fortunately, the blessed month empowers the Muslims to be brave enough to restrain themselves from devilish or sinful activity including backbiting, gossiping, looking immorally at forbidden things and using obscene words. Thus, taking part in the mandatory practice of Ramadan fasting through offering the prayers on time, eating and drinking as prescribed makes the Muslims well disciplined and Muttaqee (God fearing). Health Benefits: Ramadan fasting definitely helps in ridding our bodies of stored poisons, including addictive substances, and we feel enabled to adjust our craving and upgrade our tolerance level. Most of all, one’s mind becomes purely clean and clear of all lustful
thoughts after attaining Taqwa. Among the health benefits of Ramadan fasting, is the relaxation period for stomach, digestive system, refining system, heart, circulatory system, the kidneys and the list goes on and on. As claimed by medical scientists and doctors, Islamic Fast is also a kind of psychological treatment, because it provides spiritual enhancement and strengthens the feeling of being free from physical limitations and habits and addictions. It boils down to the fact that “Ramadan fasting” is not only a time during which people deprive themselves from physical pleasures, but it’s also an important occasion to practise morality through self-restraint for attaining the spiritual growth. In nutshell, the best use of precious time is connecting with Allah through focusing on the Qur^an and offering regular five times daily prayers followed by travee prayers, helping others, feeding the hungry and staying on the righteous path. It’s the best time to get rid of hot temper, immoral negligence, laziness, and impatience. Let’s practise only the opposite of bad habit every day until the end of month and thereafter as well. The last ten nights this month are the most precious times for supplication, self-analysis, reflection and serious thought. Since the blessed month make Muslims feel morally re-conditioned and rebooted, they must maintain the momentum of carrying out their self-check up through increased religious dedication 24/7 during the remainder of the year till next Ramadan.

PM Abbasi lashes out at NAB over inquiry into allegation that Nawaz sent $4.9bn to India
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Wednesday strongly criticised the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for launching a probe against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, involving alleged money laundering of $4.9 billion to India. According to NAB, it launched the probe after a Sept 2016 World Bank migration and remittance book reported that India’s foreign exchange reserves had increased by $4.9 billion due to huge cash inflows attributed to money laundering, inflicting losses to Pakistan’s national kitty. The prime minister while addressing the National Assembly asked the House to constitute a committee which would summon the NAB chairman and investigate the allegations. The premier in his tirade also claimed that the institution had overstepped its domain. The country will not function if institutions will work in this way, he added, pointing out
that the NA still has time to amend the NAB laws.He asked the House to “summon the NAB chairman” to clear his position as “allegations of a very serious nature” had been levelled against the former prime minister. Abbasi said that based on the manner in which the former premier had been brought before the accountability court, he did not believe that NAB would be able to provide justice to Nawaz Sharif. Prerequisites of justice should be met in all matters, the prime minister said, adding: “Not only should justice be done, it must also be seen being done.” “The Bureau should play its due role against corruption and should fulfil the requirements of justice,” he added. Earlier Defence Minister Khurram Dastagir Khan expressed the same sentiments and criticised NAB for launching the money laundering probe against Nawaz Sharif. Syed Naveed Qamar of the PPP said he could understand the prime minister’s concern but he partially disagreed with the idea of summoning the NAB chairman and held it tantamount to interference into NAB affairs. “It will be a new precedent if we interfere into the matters of an institution that we ourselves created,” he said, adding that he, however, would consult with his party leadership over the issue of constituting a committee on the matter.Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf ’s Asad Umar categorically opposed the suggestion of constituting a committee on the issue. He said that interfering into the affairs of NAB would be “tantamount to the murder of justice and accountability” in the country.“NAB is fulfilling the role that the Finance Ministry should have played on the first day the report came out,” he said.
PTI absorbs Junoobi Punjab Suba Mahaz after promising new province in south Punjab
The estranged PML-N lawmakers who had formed the Junoobi Punjab Suba Mahaz (JPSM) a month ago officially merged into the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday and will now contest the 2018 general elections under the PTI banner. The two parties had reached an agreement a day earlier and made their merger official at a press conference in Islamabad today. JPSM president Khusro Bakhtiar said that the merger was made possible after the PTI included the formation of a new province in south Punjab to their election manifesto. Under the deal, the PTI is to set in motion the procedures to create a new province in south Punjab within 100 days if it forms the next government. “We had presented our case in front of Pakistan just a month ago,” said Bakhtiar. “In just this one month, the party that will be the creator of a new Pakistan, has not only added our demand for a separate province in south Punjab to its manifesto but also promised the same — not to us but to the people of Pakistan.” Bakhtiar again highlighted the importance for a separate province, saying that doing so is imperative
for “Pakistan’s internal cohesion” and that it would help the country emerge as a powerful nation. In a reference to the PML-N, he said that the party that has been ruling Punjab for the last 30-35 years kept south Punjab with itself not for the sake of federation but just to keep on ruling.“It’s the decision of the people of southern Punjab that they don’t want to live this life of subjugation,” he added. PTI Chairman Imran Khan, after welcoming Bakhtiar and the rest of the JPSM leaders into his party, explained that agreeing to the formation of a new province “is not a political decision but [his] conviction”. “Others before me may have made the same promise but I strongly believe that a federation gets stronger only when the federating units are happy to be a part of the nation,” he said. “I believe that administering big units is very difficult.” “Lahore is my city; I should be happy that 53 or 55 per cent of Punjab’s budget is being spent there but as a Pakistani I can tell you that this is damaging Pakistan,” Khan said before adding that the practice promotes inferiority complex. The PTI chief said that if his party comes into power he would expedite both the south Punjab province as well as Fata’s merger into the KP. “We commit that, even though it won’t be easy, this will be our cause and we will expedite this — not just this but Fata’s merger into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa too,” he said. When asked why does he want to split Punjab into two but merge Fata into the KP, Khan said: “Fata’s issue is that its system has been demolished due to the war on terrorism. They neither have an old system nor a new one. The people there never wanted to join KP but they’ve sort of become orphans now so a merger with the KP is their demand now.” Source: dawn.com
Strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocks Afghanistan, Pakistan
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rocked Afghanistan and various parts of Pakistan on Wednesday, sending people racing out of buildings in the two capitals and injuring at least 13 people and damaging dozens of homes in both countries. The quake struck at 1041 GMT near Afghanistan’s border with Tajikistan in the Hindu Kush mountains at a depth of 111 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said. Omer Mohammadi, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s disaster management authority, said two small children were injured when their home collapsed and one of them was listed in critical condition. Abdul Razak Zinda, a senior official at a disaster management agency, said 45 houses were damaged in three districts in the northeastern Takhar
province of Afghanistan. He said three people were injured. In Islamabad and Kabul, people fled their offices and homes and recited verses from the Holy Quran in the streets. AFP correspondents in the capital Kabul felt the ground move for at least a minute in the second quake that came a few hours after the first. In Peshawar, people rushed into the streets following the tremor, fearing aftershocks, witnesses told AFP. Earlier on Wednesday, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled parts of western Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan. That quake caused a stampede at a school in Bannu, injuring at least 10 students, according to Mohammad Aslam, a local police official. N. Korea’s Kim meets China’s Malaysia’s shock election result as president ahead of Trump summit Mahathir Mohamad wins at 92
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a northern Chinese port city and pledged his continuing commitment to denuclearization ahead of his expected summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, state media said Tuesday. The meeting Monday and Tuesday in Dalian is the second between Xi and Kim in recent weeks, following Kim’s March visit to Beijing -- his first since taking power six years ago. In comments carried Tuesday night by Chinese state media, neither leader was quoted as directly referring to either the planned Trump meeting or Kim’s summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in late last month. However, state broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as saying China “supports North Korea to stick to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and supports North Korea and the U.S. in solving the peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation.” Trump tweeted Tuesday that he planned to speak with Xi later in the day to discuss trade and North Korea, where he said “relationships and trust are building.” Kim was quoted as telling Xi that North Korea remains committed to denuclearization and has no need to possess nuclear weapons if a “relevant party” drops its “hostile policy and security threats” against it, a clear reference to the United States. “I hope to build mutual trust with the U.S. through dialogue,” Kim was quoted as saying. A political resolution of tensions on the peninsula and denuclearization should proceed in stages, with all sides moving in concert, he said. The Trump administration has demanded that North Korea immediately commit to denuclearization. The KimXi meeting was the top news story in North Korea, with its most famous television announcer, Ri Chun Hui, again called out of her semi-retirement to report the event, underscoring its importance. Ri, wearing a traditional Korean-style dress, often smiled as she reported the news. The report, which lasted about 20 minutes, did not show any photos or video of the visit. Kim was accompanied by his younger sister, who has taken on an increasingly public role as the North Korean leader has tried to present a “softer” face to the outside world. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said there was a “deep exchange of opinions” between Kim and Xi on the changes around the Korean Peninsula that are “drawing the world’s eyes and ears.” Kim offered his views on how North Korea and China would “firmly grasp the strategic opportunity,” it said. Though rumours are likely widespread, North Korea’s media still have not explicitly con-
firmed the expected summit with Trump. The recent South Korean summit and the potential U.S. talks have received more attention internationally, but China’s role as an economic lifeline for North Korea makes the talks between Xi and Kim all the more crucial. Kim needs to make sure that whatever negotiations he has with Trump align to some degree with Beijing’s positions, which could certainly complicate his task ahead. China’s official Xinhua News Agency said Xi hosted a welcome banquet for Kim on Monday and the two leaders strolled along the coastline at a government guesthouse and had lunch together on Tuesday. “At a crucial time when the regional situation is developing rapidly, Kim said he came to China again to meet with (Xi) and inform him of the situation,” Xinhua said. CCTV showed Xi wearing a western business suit and Kim in his standard high-collared Mao suit. They stood on a beach, sat under an awning on an outdoor deck, strolled through lush gardens and sat at a conference table. “In a cordial and friendly atmosphere, the top leaders of the two parties and the two countries had an all-round and in-depth exchange of views on China-DPRK relations and major issues of common concern,” Xinhua said, using the initials for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. China is North Korea’s only major ally, although trade has plummeted in recent months as Beijing enforces United Nations economic sanctions in response to the North’s nuclear bomb and ballistic missile tests. China has also been eager to assert its importance in the process of lowering tensions on the Korean Peninsula. It has called for a halt to weapons tests and large-scale military exercises and a return to six-nation denuclearization talks it previously hosted in Beijing. It was not known how long the Xi-Kim meeting had been planned or why Dalian was chosen. Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post newspaper cited two unidentified sources as saying that Xi had flown to Dalian on the coast east of Beijing to preside over the official launch of sea trials for China’s first entirely self-built aircraft carrier. Chinese internet users posting on social media described heavy security in the city and extensive flight delays on Monday. Others said they spotted a set of Red Flag limousines used by state leaders. As with Kim’s March visit to Beijing, his presence in Dalian was not officially confirmed until he had left China. Reports said his jet flew out of Dalian airport on Tuesday afternoon. Source: CP24
MALAYSIA’S outgoing Prime Minister Najib Razak has said he has accepted the “verdict of the people” but didn’t concede defeat to 92-year-old Mahathir Mohamad. Source: Al-Jazeera MALAYSIA’S veteran ex-leader Mahathir Mohamad, 92, has won a historic election victory, in a political earthquake that toppled the country’s scandalplagued premier and ousted a regime that had ruled for over six decades. In a stunning political upset that took pundits by surprise, Mahathir’s opposition alliance ended the long hold on power of the Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power in Malaysia since its birth as an independent country in 1957. The thumping victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years and came out of retirement to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal. When he takes power, Mahathir will be the oldest prime minister in the world. Despite the shock result there were no reports of trouble on the streets, where pockets of celebration erupted overnight. Mohamad said he expected to be sworn in as prime minister later Thursday after his stunning election win, adding there was an “urgency” for him to take office.“We expect today for me to be sworn in as prime minister,” he told a press conference, addressing concerns over a de-
lay by saying that some “confusion” over the process had now been cleared. A flag-waving crowd of supporters gathered on a field outside the headquarters of Mahathir’s party near Kuala Lumpur. Suva Selvan, a 48-year-old doctor, said he felt the country had just won its independence. “I feel that with this change we probably can see something better in the future ... our hope for the future is a better government, fair, free and united,” he told AFP. Defeat could just be the beginning of Najib’s troubles. Mahathir has vowed to bring him to justice over allegations that billions of dollars were looted from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, which the scandal-hit leader set up and oversaw. But at a press conference after his win, Mahathir vowed: “We are not seeking revenge. We want to restore the rule of law.” Razak said he accepted the will of the people after the coalition that has led the country for six decades suffered a shock loss. But he did not make a clear concession, and added that it was up to the nation’s king to decide who would become the next prime minister as no single party had won a majority parliament. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has hit out at a French manifesto that calls for certain passages of the Quran to be removed, likening the signatories to the text to members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group. An open letter, published on April 22 in Le Parisien newspaper and signed by nearly 300 prominent French figures, argued that verses of the Quran calling for the “murder and punishment of Jews, Christians and disbelievers” should be removed because they are “obsolete”. Signatories included former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and former Prime Minister Manuel Valls as well as intellectuals and other public figures. “Who are you to attack our scriptures? We know how vile you are,” Erdogan retorted on Tuesday in a speech in the capital, Ankara. “You are no different than ISIL,” he said. “Have they ever read their books, the Bible? Or the Torah?” Erdogan asked, referring to the Christian and Jewish holy books, adding: “If they had read them, they probably would want to ban the Bible.” The letter said “Islamist radicalisation” was to blame for what it described as a “quiet ethnic purging” in the Paris region, with abuse forcing Jewish families to move out. A third of France’s record hate crimes target Jews, despite the community making up only 0.7 percent of the population. But Erdogan also pointed to Islamophobia in the West, saying Ankara
had warned its partners of “Islamophobia, anti-Turkish feeling, xenophobia, racism”. Relations between Turkey and the West have been tense following a failed coup in July 2016, but ties with France have been further strained in recent weeks. Tension rose after French President Emmanuel Macron offered to mediate between Turkey and outlawed Kurdish fighters, an offer furiously rejected by Erdogan. Despite the letter being published last month, the Turkish government first reacted on the weekend as the country gets ready for parliamentary and presidential polls in June. Turkey’s Europe Minister Omer Celik said on Sunday the letter was “the most striking example of intellectual violence and barbarity”. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said: “No one can dare to touch even a single letter of Quran; it is under God’s protection.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Police investigate racist tirade at Alberta Denny’s
Police are investigating after a woman at a Denny’s in Alberta was caught on video shouting at other patrons to “go back to your own” country and threatening to “leap across the table” and punch them. The woman, who has since lost her job at a B.C. car dealership after being identified, has apologized. But she says the video doesn’t reflect the whole story and that she was “merely standing up for myself as I was being disrespected that night.” Monir Omerzai, who has lived in Lethbridge for more than 12 years since moving from Afghanistan, said the incident happened in April. He posted the video to Facebook on Tuesday evening after he says friends encouraged him to do so. “All the immigrants that they come here and they work hard, they basically start from scratch, and nobody should be disrespected like that for no reason,” Omerzai told CTV Lethbridge on Wednesday. “I’ve lived all over Canada, and I haven’t seen anybody like that.” On April 21, Kelly Pocha from Cranbrook, B.C., and her husband visited the Denny’s in Lethbridge. In an adjacent booth, Omerzai and three friends settled down to grab a bite to eat. Omerzai said Pocha became upset after accusing one of his friends of “glaring” at her table. In the video, which has been viewed more than 350,000 times, Pocha accuses the men of not paying taxes, demands that they speak English and tells them to “go back to where you came from.” A man at Omerzai’s table responds by saying that they are, in fact, Canadian. “You’re a human being, I’m a human being --” the man says, before being cut off. “No, you are not Canadian,” Pocha says. At one point, Pocha’s husband attempts to hold her back as she leans toward Omerzai’s table and shouts, “You want to see a Canadian woman come and brute on your f---ing ass? It’s my f---ing home. I was born and raised here. You f---ing weren’t.” Pocha later shouts, “You’re not dealing with one of your Syrian b----es right now. You’re dealing with a Canadian woman. And I’m not going to be talked down to by you.” Omerzai said police were called to the restaurant, but he

says the officers said they couldn’t do anything. Omerzai said he and his friends were then asked to leave by police. “The food just arrived, it was fresh and then we looked at the restaurant owner and then they told us we have to pack our food and leave now,” he said. Omerzai said the waitress then apologized to Pocha. “Before the lady was moved, the waitress at Denny’s, she was apologizing to her -- but not us. Like, we were the ones there, we were not intoxicated, we were not anything.” Omerzai said he’s never experienced such overt racism, and that he struggled over whether or not to post the video because he didn’t want to relive the ordeal. “(We) live in a country that’s multicultural and everybody looks at everybody the same way … I was shocked, that’s why I was laughing at what she was saying to me. I couldn’t believe it, because Canada is a beautiful country,” he said. “It just makes me upset to see people come in there and start taking out things on you. It just makes you mad. I work hard and I pay taxes, too.” CTV Lethbridge went to the Denny’s location where the incident unfolded. A manager told CTV Lethbridge to contact Denny’s Canada head office. Denny’s Canada has not responded to the request for comment. Lethbridge Police said Wednesday that they are aware of the video, and that police are “looking into the matter at this time.” Police have confirmed that both groups were asked to leave the restaurant. An investigation is being carried out, and police said they will provide an update “as more facts become known.” Source: CTV News
Donald Trump declares US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal
US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is effectively withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, defying last-ditch diplomatic efforts by his European allies to convince him otherwise. “I made clear that if the deal could not be fixed, the United States would no longer be a party to the agreement,” Trump said in a highly-anticipated address on Tuesday. “The Iran deal is defective at its core. If we do nothing, we will know what exactly will happen. “Therefore, I am announcing today, that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal,” he said. Under the deal signed in Vienna with six world powers - the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union - Iran scaled back its uranium enrichment programme and promised not to pursue nuclear weapons. In exchange, international sanctions were lifted, allowing it
to sell its oil and gas worldwide. However, secondary US sanctions remain. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed that Tehran has been meeting its nuclear commitments fully. A White House statement issued after Trump’s speech said the US president directed his “administration to immediately begin the process of re-imposing sanctions” related to the deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). “The re-imposed sanctions will target critical sectors of Iran’s economy, such as its energy, petrochemical, and financial sectors.” Trump’s decision fulfills a campaign promise to cancel the 2015 pact, which he has repeatedly described as “the worst deal ever”. Hours before his speech, the White House said Trump called French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss his decision. US Vice President Mike Pence has also informed members of Congress about the withdrawal. Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Tehran “will overcome” any “problems” it could face in the coming months. Thomas Countryman, former US assistant secretary of state who helped negotiate the deal, said withdrawing from the deal will further thrust the Middle East into the path of instability. Countryman said with Trump’s decision, the US becomes the first of the seven parties
Hezbollah, Amal and allies biggest winners in Lebanon elections
Hezbollah and its political allies are the biggest winners in Lebanon’s first general election in nine years, an analysis of the preliminary results show. Hezbollah and Amal - dubbed the “Shia duo” by local news media - are predicted to have won 29 seats in Lebanon’s 128-seat parliament during Sunday’s vote, according to unofficial tallies cited by politicians and local media reports. More than 11 seats are predicted to have been won by other political parties aligned with the duo. The long-awaited elections were marked by a voter turnout of just under 50 percent, down from 54 percent in the last legislative election in 2009, Nouhad Machnouk, Lebanon’s interior minister, said on Monday. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, declared the outcome a “national achievement” in a televised speech on Monday. Sunday’s elections were Lebanon’s first in nearly a decade of turbulent politics. Since 2009, the Lebanese have watched their government collapse twice - in 2011 and 2013 - the presidency sit vacant for 29 months - from 2014 to 2016 - and their parliament extend its mandate several times. Nasrallah said Hezbollah achieved what it was hoping to in the elections. Commenting on the contest between the Hezbollah-led bloc and the Future Movement party of Saad Hariri, Lebanon’s prime minister, in Beirut, a Sunni stronghold, Nasrallah said the results will show that “Beirut is for all the Lebanese” and that it is “a capital of the resistance”. Images circulating on social media on Monday showed Hezbollah supporters tearing up posters of Hariri and his late father and former Lebanese prime minister, Rafik Hariri, the previous evening in Beirut. Hezbollah, Amal and their allies appear to have secured more than the “obstructionist third” needed to block the most important actions of parliament, Kemal Feghali, a veteran Lebanese pollster, told Al Jazeera. Explaining that a two-thirds quorum vote is required in crucial matters, such as amending the constitution or electing a president, Feghali said: “Because they have more than a third [of parliament], they can block the quorum.” In typical legislative sessions, only a simple majority of 65 members is required to vote, something Hezbollah, Amal and allies can obtain by renewing their alliance with President Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement (FPM). Hezbollah
and FPM signed a memorandum of understanding in 2006, after Aoun returned from exile, and have been close allies since. It is the first such alliance between a major Maronite Christian and Shia political parties in Lebanon’s history. Hypothetically, a continued alliance with FPM, which reportedly won 17 seats in Sunday’s elections, could give Hezbollah and Amal “an absolute majority in parliament”, Feghali said. However, it is not entirely certain that Hezbollah and FPM will maintain their 12-year alliance. Throughout the electoral campaign, establishment parties navigated the country’s strict sectarian quota by hastily striking deals to produce a new patchwork of local alliances. FPM’s strategy appeared to be aimed at cobbling together “coalition lists” of convenience depending on the local electoral calculus - that is, entering into alliances with political parties in certain districts and simultaneously running against them in others. As such, FPM could very well constitute a separate bloc “on the side”, and “depending on the topic, they will decide on who to side with,” Feghali said. Sami Nader, a political analyst, told Al Jazeera Hezbollah and Amal “don’t even need the Aounists (FPM) to form a bloc [in parliament] or to obtain the veto power”. “They can do it without them,” Nader said. Hezbollah and Amal ran unified lists under the name Al Amal Wal Wafa (Arabic for Hope and Loyalty) across the country, but also ran candidate lists with allied parties such as the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), the Marada Movement, the Arab Liberation Party (ALP) and the Majd Movement. Hezbollah and Amal further allied with prominent yet controversial figures: one, who emerged victorious at the unofficial polls, was Jamil al-Sayyed, a Shia former intelligence chief with strong ties to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Shia Duo swept the polls in Lebanon’s South District II, composed of Zahrani and Tyre, and South District III, made up of Nabatiyeh, Marjayyoun, Bint Jbeil and Hasbaya. Per the strict sectarian quota that long governed the country, the two districts together are allocated 18 seats in total: 14 Shia, one Greek Catholic, one Greek Orthodox, one Druze and one Sunni - all of which were won by Hezbollah, Amal and their allies. who is violating the agreement. “That would be a serious case of foreign policy malpractice, and it would have several effects that would play out very slowly.” He also said the US is now left with diminished credibility to negotiate a better deal, while making negotiations with North Korea “more complicated”. Regardless of Trump’s decision, the other parties to the Iran deal have said they will not abandon it. In a joint statement earlier on Tuesday, the European Union, Britain, France and Germany said they met Iranian officials in Brussels and reaffirmed their support “to the continued full and effective implementation of the JCPOA by all sides”. Meanwhile, Russia warned on Tuesday that a “very serious situation” will emerge if Trump pulls out of the pact. For his part, Ali Fathollah-Nejad, an Iran expert at Brookings Doha and the German Council on Foreign Relations, told Al Jazeera that there is an incentive in Tehran to keep the deal afloat despite Trump’s decision. He said “a great portion of the Iranian elite” who benefited from the post-deal business would want the deal to survive. On the other hand, some hardline factions do not mind the deal’s collapse, he said. Since Trump assumed office in January 2017, he had taken several steps to block the deal. In October, he refused to certify that Iran is living up to the accord. He also targeted several Iranian businesses and individuals with new sanctions. On January 12, Trump announced he was waiving the US sanctions for the “last time”. He said if his demands to “fix the deal” were not met within 120 days, the US would withdraw from the deal on or before the deadline. Source: Al-Jazeera

FAITH Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When Ramadan enters, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed and the devils are chained.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
The Fasting of Ramadan: A Time for Thought, Action, and Change!
“Fa
By: Taha Ghayyur, Taha Ghaznavi sting in Ramadan develops in a person the real spirit of social belonging, of unity and brotherhood, and of equality before God. This spirit is the natural product of the fact that when people fast they feel that they are joining the whole Muslim society (which makes up more than one fifth of world’s population) in observing the same duty, in the same manner, at the same time, for the same motives, and for the same end. No sociologist or historian can say that there has been at any period of history anything comparable to this powerful institution of Islam: Fasting in the month of Ramadan. People have been crying throughout the ages for acceptable ‘belonging’, for unity, for brotherhood, for equality, but how echoless their voices have been, and how very little success they have met...” says Hammudah Abdalati, in Islam in Focus. “What is fasting?” “How does the fasting of Muslims in Ramadan differ from the fasting of other faiths?” “Why should one ‘torture’ one’s body in the first place?” “What do you really gain from fasting in the end?”...These are a few questions that a number of non-Muslim friends and colleagues often ask us, usually out of fascination with this spiritually-uplifting practice of Islamic faith, and at times out of pity and sympathy for us, thinking, why should anyone suffer from hunger and thirst like Muslims? I wouldn’t be surprised if many of us shared the same negative perception of Fasting. It is important to note that Fasting in Arabic is called, “Sawm”, which literally means ‘to be at rest’. Fasting in the month of Ramadan (the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar) is one of the Five Pillars upon which the “house” of Islam is built. During this month, every able-bodied Muslim, is required to fast, everyday from dawn until dusk
12 Reasons To Fast!
Develop Adaptability Fasting in Ramadan enables us to master the art of mature adaptability and Time-Management. We can easily understand this point when we realize that fasting makes people change the entire course of their daily life. When they make the change, they naturally adapt themselves to a new system and schedule, and move along to satisfy the rules. This, in the long run, develops in them a wise sense of adaptability and self-created power to overcome the unpredictable hardships of life! A person who values constructive adaptability, time-management, and courage will appreciate the effects of Fasting in this respect as well. Cultivates Love It cultivates in us the principle of sincere Love, because when we observe Fasting, we do it out of deep love for
God. And a person, who loves God, truly is a person who knows what love is and why everyone on this Earth should be loved and treated justly, for the sake of God. Elevates the Spirit Fasting elevates the human spirit and increases our awareness of God. It strengthens our will-power as we learn to rise above our lower desires. The institution of fasting is both unique and a shared experience in human history. From the very beginning of time, humans have struggled to master their physical and psychological selves: their bodies and their emotions. Hunger is one the most powerful urges that we experience. Many, through over- or under-eating or consumption of unhealthy foods, abuse this urge. Thus, when a person purposefully denies something to their own self that it
craves, they are elevating their mind above their body, and their reason and will above their carnal passions. “A fasting person empties his stomach of all the material things: to fill his soul with peace and blessings, to fill his heart with love and sympathy, to fill his spirit with piety and Faith, to fill his mind with wisdom and resolution,” says H. Abdalati in Islam in Focus. The person who can rule their desires and make them work, as they like, has attained true moral excellence. Develops Clarity of Mind With the clarity of mind and absence of distractions, also comes a greater focus. As students, the period of fasting, especially early during the day, serves as a tool to focus our minds on our academics. In the month of Ramadan, many Muslims try to avoid watching TV, listening to music, and some other lei-

What is Taraweeh Prayer?
he Taraweeh Prayer is an emphasised Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah( peace be upon him ) during the month of Ramadan. Both al-Bukhaari (1129) and Muslim (761) narrated from ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed one night in the mosque, and the people followed him in prayer. Then he prayed the next night, and many people came. Then they gathered on the third or fourth night, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not come out to them. The next morning he said: “I saw what you did, and nothing kept me from coming out to you except the fact that I feared that it would be made obligatory for you.” And that was in Ramadan These hadith show that praying Taraweeh in congregation is prescribed in the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Umar during his Khilafah restablished this Sunnah of prayer in congregation.
It was narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would forgo doing something that he liked to do lest the people do it and it become obligatory upon them. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1060; Muslim, Salaat al-Musaafireen, 1174). Al-Bukhaari (2010) narrated that ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Abd al-Qaari said: I went out with ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) to the mosque one night in Ramadan, and the people were scattered, each man praying by himself. Some men would pray and have groups of people behind them following them. ‘Umar said: “I think that if I unite all these people with one reader, it will be better. Then he resolved to gather them behind Ubayy ibn Ka’b. Al-Haafiz said: Ibn al-Teen and others said that ‘Umar based this decision on the Prophet’s approval of those who prayed with him on those nights. Although he disliked that for
them, that was based on the fear that it might be made obligatory for them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) died, there was no longer any fear of that happening, and ‘Umar thought, because of the potential division that might arise from people praying separately, and because uniting them behind one reader is more motivating for many people. The majority agreed with ‘Umar’s decision. End quote from Fath al-Baari. THE VIRTUES OF THE TARAWEEH PRAYER Abu Hurayrah said: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said “He who prays during the night in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven” (Agreed Upon) The Majority of scholars say that by all his pasts sins it means his minor sin not major

in Ramadan. During the holy month, Muslims would wake up early to eat a pre-dawn meal called suhoor, and they break their fast with a meal referred to as iftar. It is common for mosques to host large iftars, especially for the poor and needy. Nightly prayers called Tarawih are also held in mosques after iftar. Different cultures have different traditions during Ramadan, whether it is a special food they must cook, or eating iftar with the extended family. Islamic tenets, such as generosity, inspired most of these traditions, such as sharing food and inviting guests over for iftar.
Ramadan is the holiest month for Muslims. Every year, Muslims around the world fast during daylight hours, but what is it really about? Ramadan is the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar. Healthy adult Muslims fast in Ramadan from dawn until dusk. This includes abstaining from drinking, eating, immoral acts and anger. Other acts of worship such as prayer, reading the Quran and charity are also encouraged during Ramadan. Muslims also believe that the Quran was revealed sync with the ‘transit time’ of food from the mouth to the colon of the large intestine, ensure activities, which spares them more time suring that no stimulus reaches the stomach and energy to be spent on more productive or digestive system while it remains in hoactivities such as academics, intense study meostasis. Moreover, it reminds us of the life after death, which itself has a great impact on our character and our world-view. Connection to the Quran Ramadan is a blessed month for a special reason: It is actually the month in which God first revealed His final message and guidance for mankind to our beloved Prophet Muhammad. This message has been perfectly preserved both orally and textually in the form of a Book, called the Qur’an (The Reading/Recital). Therefore, Muslims try to do an intense study of the Quran in this month especially, and evaluate their lives according to the standards and guidance contained in it.
A time to Celebrate After the month of Ramadan is over, Muslims celebrate one of the two most important holidays in the Islamic year: EID-UL-FITR, or the Festival of the Fast Breaking. It is a day to thank God for the blessing and training that He provides us with throughout the month of Ramadan. EID-UL-FITR is marked by praying in a huge congregation at an Islamic center or mosque, and by giving a small donation to the poor in the community. The adults give the donation on behalf of their children as well. Dinner parties, family outings, fairs, carnivals, and great joyous celebrations follow the prayer and charity. In a nutshell, even though the real purpose of the dynamic institution of Fasting is to discipline our soul and moral behavior, and to develop sympathy for the less fortunate, it is a multi-functional and a comprehensive tool of change in various spheres of our lives, including: social and economic, intellectual and humanitarian, spiritual and physical, private and public, personal and common, inner and outer ---all in one! Saudi Arabia ‘to seek nuclear weapon’ if Iran resumes program
LONDON: Iran’s actions amount to a “declaration of war,” the Saudi foreign minister warned on Wednesday, after two ballistic missiles were fired toward Riyadh by Tehran-backed Houthi militias. Adel Al-Jubeir, speaking to CNN, said Saudi Arabia would seek to develop its own nuclear weapons capacity should Iran do the same.He was speaking the day after US President Donald Trump pulled out of a 2015 deal that seeks to curtail Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain praised the decision to reimpose sanctions on Tehran. Asked whether Saudi Arabia would “build a bomb itself ” if Iran resumes its nuclear weapons program, Al-Jubeir said: “If Iran acquires nuclear capability we will do everything we can to do the same.”
Two ballistic missiles were fired at the Saudi capital Riyadh on Wednesday, according to the coalition battling Houthis in neighboring Yemen, which claimed the attempted attack. “These missiles are Iranian manufactured and delivered to the Houthis. Such behavior is unacceptable. It violates UN Resolutions with regards to ballistic missiles. And the Iranians must be held accountable for this,” Al-Jubeir told CNN. “We will find the right way and at the right time to respond to this … We are trying to avoid at all costs direct military action with Iran, but Iran’s behavior such as this cannot continue. This amounts to a declaration of war.” Iran witnessed public protests around the New Year, with some angered by the country’s financial support for foreign groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, amid
economic problems at home. Dr. Majid Rafizadeh, a Harvard-educated Iranian-American political scientist, said that the reimposition of sanctions on Iran would likely make it more challenging for Iran to “hemorrhage billions of dollars” on proxies like Hezbollah and the Houthis. But he added that supporting such groups would remain a priority for Iran. “Even before the nuclear deal when the Iran regime was crippled with multilateral and unilateral economic sanctions, Tehran still continued to support militias, proxies and terrorist groups,” Rafizadeh told Arab News. “The Iranian regime will more likely cut social welfare on its own citizens in order to afford supporting its proxies.” Phillip Smyth, Soref fellow at The Washington Institute, said the Iranian Revolutionary
Guard Corps and Quds Force have “secure sources” of funding. “If it appears (as has happened) that Iranians are not getting anything beneficial through the government, while the government continues its overseas/regional adventures, it certainly does not bode well for the government in Tehran,” he told Arab News. UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council urged Myanmar’s government on Wednesday to fulfill its commitment to hold perpetrators of violence against Rohingya Muslims accountable and to address the root causes that led about 700,000 members of the ethnic minority to flee to Bangladesh. The council press statement made no mention of the appeal by four human rights groups on Tuesday for the Security Council to refer Myanmar to the International
Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, including targeting the Rohingya. The four rights groups — Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Global Center for the Responsibility to Protect, and Fortify Rights — said Myanmar’s government is incapable of bringing those responsible for such crimes to justice. The council statement on Wednesday reaffirmed its most significant pronouncement on the Rohingya, a presidential statement it adopted in November. That statement stressed “the importance of undertaking transparent investigations into allegations of human rights abuses and violations ... and of holding to account all those responsible for such acts to provide justice for victims.” The latest crisis began with attacks by Rohingya insurgents on Myanmar security personnel last August.
Myanmar’s military responded with counterinsurgency sweeps and was accused of widespread human rights violations, including rape, murder, torture and the burning of Rohingya homes. Thousands are believed to have died and the UN and US officials have called the government’s military campaign ethnic cleansing. The Rohingya face official and social discrimination in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, which denies most of them citizenship and basic rights because they are looked on as immigrants from Bangladesh, even though the families of many settled in Myanmar generations ago. The Security Council statement said that during its trip members observed “widespread destruction of villages” in northern Rakhine State, and “were struck by the scale of the humanitarian crisis and remain gravely concerned by the current situation.”
It urged all countries to increase support to Bangladesh to care for the refugees. The council said members noted Myanmar’s efforts to prepare for the repatriation of refugees from Bangladesh and urged the government to create conditions conducive for their “safe, voluntary and dignified return” to their homes in Rakhine. It welcomed Myanmar’s commitment to work with the UN and urged the government to grant UN agencies and their partners, who have been barred from Rakhine, “immediate, safe and unhindered access.” The Security Council has scheduled an open briefing on the trip for May 14 and the statement said members intend to discuss in the coming days how it can work with both countries and the new UN special envoy “to resolve the crisis and create the conditions” for the Rohingya to return home. Al Ihsaan Women’s Vocational Centre of Bangladesh Fundraising Dinner
Alhumdulillah, with the Mercy of Allah (SWT) and the generosity of all the donors, Al -Ihsaan Women’s Vocational Centre of Bangladesh (a project of Human Concern International of Canada) had another successful fundraising dinner on May 5th at New Era Banquet hall in Delta, BC. Even though we were short of some fund to reach our target but it still allowed us to gather approximately 250 Muslims together in one place for the sake of Allah (SWT). This one its own is a great success; may Allah (SWT) join us all together in Jannah. You have filled our hearts with great fortitude and encouragement, not only to continue this great journey but also to increase our efforts and dedication to surmount all the obstacles. The board of Al Ihsan would like to thank each and every participant, present or not, for their generosity and continued support for this project. The guest speaker, Sheikh Ahmad Shehab, once again sacrificed his time and family to be with us for this awesome event. Sheikh Shehab did an amazing job, as usual, in motivating the audience and reminding them of their duties to Allah (SWT). We ask Allah (SWT) to shower Sh. Shehab and his family with blessings and reunite them in Al Ferdaus. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank all the volunteers that made this event happen; their relentless efforts should be an example to all. Ramadhan is but a few days away. We pray that
Allah will grant us the opportunity to reach it, to partake of it and to obtain the humongous blessings in it. We urge you to not only focus on racing as fast as you can to ‘finish’ the Qur’an but realize that this blessed month is also a unique time to implement your generosity. You are only too well familiar how generous your Model, The Messenger [SAW] was, and yet how much more so he was during this month. Is Allah not generous? Does He not love generosity? Fudail bin Iyyad reported “Every night Allah proclaims, ‘I am generous …”Many of us pay our Zakat during this month. We at Al-Ihsan Women’s Vocational Center would be delighted to receive and distribute your donations to a community of one of the most deprived peoples. The school has added grade 10 and a science lab this year to promote science within the students beside Islamic studies so that they know the creator through science. Some of you already sponsored 2 class rooms and the libray under the name of your loved one or your organization. We need more sponsors either to sponsor a class room or the science lab with 5k per year or a destitute student with $30/month for meals and study and an orphan with $50/month for Hifz study, meals and housing. We have 250 full time students this year, we need 100+ sponsors. You have an option to sponsor a classroom from Grade 1 to 10 as well as the Science lab.
We also collect Fitrana for student’s family to celebrate their Eid. Alhamdulillah, we can feed a family of 10 with a banquet meal on Eid day at cost of 15 dollar. MLAs Jagrup Brar and Ravi Kahlon welcomes new playground for Janice Churchill Elementary in Surrey and Delta
SURREY – Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar and Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon said students at Janice Churchill Elementary in Surrey and Chalmers Elementary in Delta are getting a new playground, thanks to $105,000 in provincial funding to each of the schools announced by the Premier and Minister of Education today. “For far too long, the burden of paying for quality, safe, and accessible playgrounds at school was put on parents to fundraise,” said MLA Jagrup Brar. “Parents of students at Janice Churchill Elementary
can rest assured that our government will provide funding to build a new playground to allow children to play in a safe and accessible playground.” “Parents already lead such busy lives, and having to fundraise tens of thousands of dollars for school playgrounds adds to the stress,” said MLA Ravi Kahlon, “Today’s investment will help relieve some stress for parents at Chalmers Elementary, and provide students with a quality, safe, and accessible new playground to be enjoyed for years to come.” This funding is part of a new, ongoing Playground Equipment Program that will provide up to $5 million each year to school districts to purchase new or replacement playgrounds, and fulfills a central NDP campaign promise. This year, 26 schools are receiving $90,000 for a standard playground, and 25 schools are receiving $105,000 for a universally-accessible playground. Generally, schools’ Parent Advisory Councils have to fun-
draise large sums of money for new and replacement playground equipment, and schools without that capability are left without playgrounds. The new fund will ensure that kids don’t have to suffer for years with inadequate or unsafe playground equipment, and that parents can focus their energy on their children’s success. Playgrounds are important for children’s development and learning. They encourage outdoor physical activity and help students learn how to share, work together, overcome challenges and be creative. Outdoor play can help students focus and learn more effectively in the classroom. By: Manveer Sihota

Amazing Stent Usage In Coronary Angioplasty And Other Procedures
C
oronary angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention, is a surgical procedure that involves adding and inflating a temporary balloon into a clogged artery to widen it. In most cases, coronary angioplasty is combined with the permanent placement of a stent, which is a small, mesh wire tube designed to prop the artery open, so it does not close again. Compared to other cardiac surgeries, coronary angioplasty patients have a short recovery time and experience less pain. Here are some other ways stents are used. 7. Open Blocked Artery During Heart Attack
taken from other areas of the body. Research supports using stents to promote the growth of healthy skin after a skin graft by widening blood vessels around the affected area to encourage blood and oxygen flow, which is crucial for repairing the skin. In some cases, stents are made from rubber foam pads and stapled over the skin graft.
5. Esophageal Stent
a blood vessel supplying blood flow to the brain. Most of the time, no symptoms are present. During rare cases, the brain aneurysm ruptures and floods the skull with blood, causing a stroke. Brain stents are used in the blood vessels of people with a high risk of a brain aneurysm to strength blood vessels and support blood and oxygen flow to the brain.
3. Biliary Metal Stent
Stents are most commonly used during coronary angioplasty to widen a blocked artery and allow blood and oxygen to flow to the heart. Stents relieve symptoms of shortness of breath and chest pain by propping open the blocked artery. They can also be used during a heart attack to reduce the amount of damage done to the heart. A tiny balloon is first inserted into the blocked artery and inflated. Then the balloon is removed, and a stent is permanently placed. 6. Promote Skin Healing After A Skin Graft A skin graft is a surgical procedure used to repair skin that has been extensively burned or wounded by transplanting healthy skin
Esophageal cancers affecting the throat can make it hard for the affected person to swallow. Esophageal stents are flexible, mesh tubes measuring three-quarter of an inch wide that are placed in the throat of patients with esophageal cancer to prop the throat open and allow for easier swallowing. Esophageal stents are also used to treat fistulas, perforations, leaks and strictures of the esophagus. One study indicated that thirtytwo percent of patients reported complications such as prolonged chest pain, stent migration, and bleeding.
4. Brain Stents
Brain aneurysms occur when there is a weak or bulging area located in an artery wall of
Biliary metal stents, also known as a bile duct stent, are useful for treating several complications of bile duct disorders. They have been shown to alleviate jaundice due to advanced bile duct cancer, drain excess bile, and open blocked arteries that are common in cases of bile duct cancer. Biliary metal stents may also reduce pain associated with pancreatitis. They are commonly used in gallbladder surgery to support surrounding blood vessels and decrease the risk of blockage.

A ureteral stent, otherwise known as a ureteric stent, is designed to widen the tubes that carry urine to the bladder from the kidneys. They are thin tubes inserted into the ureter to prevent obstruction or prevent narrowing of the vessels, which would otherwise restrict urine flow. Although the length of the stent may vary, most are around twentyfour to thirty centimeters long. Ureteral stents help increase the flow of urine from the bladder and restore kidneys to their optimal functioning.

Self-respect
By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
S
women
elf-respect is crucial to self-care because it protects you from settling for less when you deserve the best. This is toxic to how you view yourself and how you allow others to treat you, your values and your boundaries. If you allow others to trample over your expectations constantly, you’re debasing your worth and chopping away at your self-esteem. You might be afraid that if you have high standards for yourself, people might perceive you as a high-maintenance person and even abandon you in the process. Let them. In fact, it’s probably a good thing that they do abandon you and reveal their true colors. At the end of the day, your opinion of yourself and what you deserve is all that truly matters in life. Having high standards for yourself, your career and relationships protects you inthe longrun. Think of things that fall below yourstandards as bad experiences. You’re not getting what you need and want out of it, but the person on the other side is. It’s not worth the investment if someone else is benefiting from the positive return. Life is too short to waste your energy by allocating resources into goals that are not truly your own. Caring for ourselves means remaining authentic and recognizing our true passions. Don’t be pressured into picking a certain career path just because society says it’s the right one for you; don’t always settle for crappy jobs just because they’ll pay the rent; don’t pursue a major just because of its financial rewards unless it’s something that re-
ally interests you. S o m e times you will have to make do with what you have in order to survive, but be sure you’re still looking for ways to improve yourself and progress to something better and something that represents your true self. For example, if you dream of writing the next big screenplay, continue working on it when you have the time. Setting aside time to pursue your dreams is important because these are things no one can take away from you. You own the right to all of your dreams and the ability to make them come to life. The key is to still be practical, but also to be passionate. You were not meant to live this life doing just what is required to survive; you were meant to live life valuing your dreams. Don’t be afraid of failure, because failure is a learning experience that will strengthen you and prepare you to do better in the future. Would you rather sit around and live in the regret of not knowing what would’ve happened if you had tried or would you rather lead an exciting life by taking on risks and challenges that will ultimately leadyou to what you were meant to do? It’s never late to start Living Your Dreams! For any inquiries please email at shabnam@skcounselling.ca
Mother’s Day: (May 13th) Islamic Prespective
M
other’s Day in Canada is observed each year on the second Sunday in May. It is not an official public or statutory holiday. Canadians have family reunions on this day to honour their mothers and celebrate motherhood. Canadians also celebrate Father’s Day. The date of Father’s Day in Canada is on the third Sunday in June. Yet, the Mother’s Day, as it’s known nowadays is a Western habit. The Westerners specified a day and called it the Mother’s Day. On that day sons and daughters show gratefulness to their mothers and offer them presents. It has become part of important feasts in the West, whereas we Muslims have no other festivals except the Lesser and the Greater Bairams. Any other celebrations are deemed mere occasions or anniversaries; and this is applied to the Mother’s Day. The Mother’s Day implies paying more attention and exerting more effort in expressing gratitude to mothers. So there is nothing wrong in that. However, there are two reservations worth mentioning; first, considering the Mother’s Day a feast; second, confining the task of showing dutifulness to mothers to that specific day, giving implication that throughout the whole year, just only one day is for

By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker he growing awareness of mental health in our society is a long time coming. We often hear about children and young adults experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mental illnesses that affect them negatively. There are numerous articles on the adverse effects on children’s mental health and effectiveness of various types of interventions that have proven to be successful. As adults and parents, we can often relate to their life experiences and experiences and are responsible to some degree to create a society where we promote healthy living a positive environment. The risk factors that affect children and mental health are: poverty, occupational difficulties, poor parent-child communication, and substance abuse by parents, hostile parental behavior, and single-parent family situations. These risk factors clearly have a common theme of stress placed on the child during their formative years. This can create behavioural, mental, and social changes in children that often go undiagnosed and affect them throughout their adult life. ate family •Sense of being loved and respected by their parents •Positive self-esteem and peer relationships •Interest in their school and the successes they face •Healthy engagement with adults and children outside the home •Parental employment •Parents who hold positive and healthy relationships with others outside the home Implementing some rules and changes of behaviors that relate to the positive factors above can create massive changes in your child. Having a house that reflects these proven positive preventive factors increase the likelihood that your child will be resilient, positive, healthy, and empathetic to others in their life. Let’s take this approach to change our parenting where it needs help. The road won’t be easy and parents will often face guilt, anger, sadness, fear, and anxiety from their children. It’s important to keep the end goal in mind of having your child’s best interest in mind. Empower yourself to empower your children. End the stigma with mental illnesses in our communities. By Asma Shums In a classical English Language paper, the following was presented as an essay topic: “Crores of rupees can be swindled from banks, but the pen at the counter, tied with a piece of twine is there forever. Kindly elaborate on the implied meaning of this.” One quintessential genius of a student wrote: “This clearly implies that Laxmiji can be stolen, but never Saraswatiji. Therefore, instead of leaving behind unquantified wealth for your child, it is far better to educate him / her, since knowledge can never be taken away from him, and shall forever remain tied to him.”
showing love to parents. If such two anomalous points are addressed, then there is nothing wrong in considering the Mother’s Day a chance to give more care to mothers. Thus, we may take the Mother’s Day as a chance to lay more emphasis on our duty towards our mothers, as Islam enjoins us, because dutifulness to parents is a genuine Islamic teaching. But Muslims, in doing that, should never deviate from the Islamic teachings, they should do things in Islamic manners, not in Western manners. Hence, they would not be imitating the non-Islamic habits of the West. Hence, viewed in juristic perspective, we can say that celebrating the Mother’s day is controversial among the contemporary scholars. While a group of them consider it haram (unlawful) as a kind of blind imitation of the Western non-Islamic habits, which have no benefit for Muslims, another group see it halal(lawful) on condition that showing gratitude and dutifulness to parents should not be confined to that day only. Moreover, the well known erudite scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi states: The Arab tend to blindly follow the Western in their celebration of the Mother’s Day, without trying to understand the wisdom behind inventing such an occasion. When the European found that children do
not deal properly towards their parents nor give them their due right, they resorted to specifying an annual occasion for children to remedy the situation. But in Islam, mothers are to be given due respect and love every time, not only one day a year. For example, when one goes out, he kisses one’s mother’s hand seeking her pleasure and blessing. A Muslim must not allow any gap between him and his mother, he must offer her presents every time. This indicates that Muslims can dispense with such an occasion, the Mother’s Day. Unlike the case in the West, where it’s a vogue for some children to show indifference to their mothers’ feelings, and, what’s more, it is so common to see some parents being dragged to infirmaries (as their kids have no time for them), dutifulness to parents in Islam, alongside with worshipping Allah, is a sacred duty. In this concern, Almighty Allah says: (And We have commended unto man kindness toward parents. His mother beareth him with reluctance, and bringeth him forth with reluctance, and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months, till, when he attaineth full strength and reacheth forty years, he saith: My Lord! Arouse me that I may give thanks for the favor wherewith Thou hast favored me and my parents, and that I may do right acceptable unto Thee.
And be gracious unto me In the matter of my seed. Lo! I have turned unto Thee repentant, and lo! I am of those who surrender (unto Thee).) (Al-Ahqaf 46: 15) Reflecting on the aforementioned Qur’anic verse, we find it stressing both parents’ right, but reviewing the following verses we find them paying special care to the mother and tackling the hardships she suffers in pregnancy, fosterage and rearing children. In this verse, Almighty Allah informs man of the debt he owes his mother since he was a fetus, passing by the process of childbirth, infancy, childhood until he comes of age. A child normally forgets the hardship which his mother underwent during pregnancy. Hence Almighty Allah draws his attention to such hardships, laying emphasis on her great status in Islam.
Why do we celebrate Victoria Day ? (May 21) For some, Victoria Day is a sign that summer is just around the corner. The holiday, which is only celebrated in Canada and Scotland, began as a celebration to honour Queen Victoria’s birthday. The British queen was born on May 24, 1819. She is the longest reigning monarch (Queen) in England, remaining on her throne for 63 years, 216 days. On September 9th, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II took the title of longest reigning monarch in British history.
Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845. At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks, and cannon salutes. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day. And it was decided that the day would be celebrated on May 24th each year (or on May 25th if the 24th fell on a Sunday). In 1952, the government made the decision to begin celebrating Vic-
toria Day on a Monday. It would be observed on May 24th if that worked out, otherwise it would be held on the Monday immediately before it. Today, Victoria Day is a holiday throughout all of Canada. And, in Quebec, a holiday called Journée nationale des patriotes is celebrated on the same day. As far as today’s celebrations, Victoria Day is marked in most cities with parades, outdoor events and activities like camping and elaborate firework displays.

National Federation of Pakistani Canadians Meet in Ottawa
It was a memorable occasion. Marked by the attendance of Canadian Parliamentarians and a former high profile Pakistani Parliamentarian, Chief Guest for the evening Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, the National Federation of Pakistani Canadians (NFPC) continued the celebration of Pakistan Day in our nation’s capital. The event was held at the centrally located Centerpointe Theatre in Ottawa on Saturday May 5th. Pakistani Canadian Pioneers from BC, Alberta, Winnipeg and Toronto attended among other places. Hundreds from the Ottawa region attended as well. Among the Canadian dignitaries included
the Hon. Andrew Leslie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Canada/US Relations), Member of Parliament (MP) Chandra Arya (Nepean) and MP Mona Fortier (Ottawa-Vanier). They all complimented the gathering of the umbrella organization and were encouraged by its commitment to advocating on behalf of Pakistani Canadians. Mr. Tanveer Ahmed, President of NFPC welcomed guests to the evening and spoke about the challenges and opportunities leading an organization such as NFPC presents. His message was one of hope; hope that a government that celebrates diversity will
once again make a commitment to hear from diverse Canadian communities as it contemplates policy direction and legislation. The NFPC took some time at this gathering to recognize excellence and service. While acknowledging excellence and service locally, the NFPC also recognized some of its founding members who made the trek from across the country, including Mr. Iqbal Cheema from Surrey British Columbia, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Chaudry from Edmonton Alberta and Mr. Saleem Janjua from the GTA. These pioneers dedicated countless hours towards pulling the community together and giving voice to the many issued faced by the
community across the country. Mr. Iqbal Cheema is no stranger to our community in BC. He has given most of his life here in Canada to public service and did so with no expectations of recognition. Mr. Iqbal Cheema is known to help people of all walks of life for no other reason other than to help. God bless these pioneers we have among us. Also in attendance from BC were Mr. and Mrs. Ehsan Malik, who also serves as a founding member of the NFPC and Mr. Bilal Cheema who continues to uplift the community across Canada through positive engagement and motivation.
Hena Hussain’s book “ From Fear to Freedom, my Journey” Launched at City of Surrey Hall
By: Farzana Alam. On April 28th, Vancouverites attended a pre-book launch of Hena Hussain’s book “ From Fear to Freedom, my Journey”. The event included an inspiring and interactive session given by Hena. It was held at the Centre Stage at the Surrey City Hall and was a collaborative effort between Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society a non- profit society dedicated to empowering women -and writer and mind coach Hena Hussain. Hena grew up in Vancouver and has written a brave, bold and beautiful book (From Fear to Freedom, my journey) about traumatic experiences in her earlier life, her “recollection” of these in her adult life and her quest to heal herself. She takes you through her journey from fear to freedom. As she dragged her burdens and secrets she moved through life carrying her
burdens alone, but she slowly learned that these problems are universal across cultures and languages. Then she discovered that there are tools that helped her overcome her fears. She shares these with you in her book so you too can journey from fear to freedom. Her talk was bold and inspiring and received kudos and much appreciation from the audience for her courage and strength in addressing issues that have been considered taboo in the South Asian culture. Hena is a much sought after lecturer, seminar leader and keynote speaker where she addresses how to create change and personal growth in our lives. She specializes in Stress Management, Power of Positive Thinking and Business Success, to name a few. She is also a Certified Hypnotherapist and a certified instructor for the International Association of Counselors and Therapists and

Her purpose in life is to share this message and give back to the community. Present at the event were Counselor General of Pakistan, Dr.Mohd. Tariq, MLA Rachna Singh and Jinny Simms, Minister of Citizen Services who awarded Hena a Certificate of Appreciation from the Legislative Assembly for her work. Jinny Simms expressed that the community is really proud of Hena that she has taken this bold and beautiful step to share her life journey to empower other women so they too can overcome their fears in their own minds just like she did.

24 S ports BC Muslim Schools Intra Soccer Tournament @ Newton Athletic Park Surrey Shaban 25,1439 May 11, 2018
Alamdho-lillah this was our Alamdho-lillah this was our third successful year for the tournament, the weather was great, bright and sunny, we had four schools partaking in the tournament, namely: Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy (AZIA) BC Muslim School, Iqra Islamic School, and Surrey Muslim Schools. The teams were dived into 2 divisions: Division 2 - Grades four and five for boys and girls Division 1 - Grades six and seven for boys and girls We will have a separate trophy (four) for each division winner and an annual trophy for the overall winner. The annual trophy is decided based on overall points so each school has a fair chance of winning. The tournament highlight was a fun all star match. The all star team was made
of two to three students from each school vs the teachers. In addition to all these, the fire and RCMP community outreach were also field for most of the day so the kids could interact with the RCMP unit. The organizing committee is grateful for the cooperation from the students, the principals and the governing authority(s) like the BCMA, Iqra and Azia boards and our brothers and sisters from the community for their cooperation. The idea is to create a healthy rivalry and competition between our schools plus get our youth more involved into sports. The trophy winners for this year is as follows: Girls Division # 1 - Surrey Muslim School Girls Division # 2 - Iqra Islamic School
Boys Division # 1 - Iqra Islamic School Boys Division # 2 - Iqra Islamic School The champions for the third time: Iqra Islamic School Other prominent members of the community were present for example the president of BCMA Br Iltaf Sahib who presented the Annual Trophy. The committee is looking at expanding the tournament next year.
Porterfield banking on county experience, local conditions as Ireland get ready for Test debut
Ireland captain William Porterfield hopes a combination of local conditions and English county cricket experience will work in his side’s favour when they make their Test debut at home to Pakistan later this week. Both the Ireland and Afghanistan teams were elevated to Test status last year, making them eligible for the five-day format. But it is Ireland who will become the 11th men’s cricket Test nation when they face Pakistan in a one-off match starting in Malahide, near Dublin, on Friday. No side has enjoyed a victory in its first Test since Australia beat England in the foundation Test at Melbourne back in 1877 and it
would be an upset were Ireland to get off to a winning start. Ireland, however, did spring a huge surprise when they knocked Pakistan out of the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, although that was in a one-day international tournament. But what encourages Porterfield ahead of Friday’s game is that early season conditions in Ireland, which can aid swing bowling and present a particular challenge to batsmen, could prove tough for a Pakistan side brought up on slower, lower and more spin-friendly pitches in the sub-continent. Pakistan, however, have been acclimatising with two warm-up matches against English
county clubs Kent and Northamptonshire. “It’s in Ireland, it’s in May, so it’s in our own conditions,” Porterfield told the Irish Independent. “You face Test bowlers in Championship games in England, and in white-ball cricket,” said Porterfield, a former Gloucestershire and Warwickshire batsman. “The biggest difference I found is that they are just a bit more relentless, they don’t give you as many bad balls,” he added. “Scoring opportunities are few and far between; you’ve got to be ready to capitalise when they miss that length. “It’s the same when you’re bowling against top players: ”Source: Scroll. In
