PAKISTAN
Gen Bajwa calls on interim PM Nasirul Mulk Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa met interim Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk at his office, a statement from the PM Office said on Wednesday. Gen Bajwa congratulated PM Mulk on assuming the office of prime minister. The army chief and the caretaker prime minister also discussed “matters pertaining to Pakistan Army” during their meeting, read the statement. Former chief justice Mulk took oath as Pakistan’s seventh caretaker prime minister last week, one day after the National Assembly was formally dissolved in the lead up to the elections. President Mamnoon Hussain had administered the oath to Mulk, who was unanimously nominated for the post by both the government and opposition, with former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi describing the retired judge as a someone whom “no one could object to”. Source: The dawn.com
Why do we have one and what purpose does it fulfil?
The government completed its five-year term last night and today former Pakistan chief justice Nasirul Mulk is set to take oath as the country’s seventh caretaker prime minister. On the night of May 31 the parliament was dissolved and the country has essentially entered preparation mode for the elections, which are scheduled to be held July 25. After much deliberation between the government and the opposition, on May 28, justice Mulk’s name was finalised for the position of caretaker PM. The question is, why do we need a non-elected individual to run the country for the next two months? Prep mode:In Pakistan, instead of the elected government stepping into ‘caretaker modus’ once its term is complete, as is the norm around the world, non-elected officials are appointed to form an interim caretaker government to oversee matters.

0ISLAMABAD: The prosecution of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday started final arguments in the Avenfield properties reference after the accountability court dismissed the application moved by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to defer further proceeding till closing of evidence in other two references. Mr Sharif ’s counsel Barrister Saad Hashmi said that his client would file an appeal against the order of accountability judge Mohammad Bashir before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Mr Sharif had moved an application seeking the postponement of the final arguments in the Avenfield reference till the closing of the prosecution’s evidence in the other two cases — Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments references. During the course of arguments, Barrister Hashmi had taken the stance that Wajid Zia was the only material witness and the JIT (joint investigation team) report was the only
evidence that the prosecution had. He said the other two references also involved the same evidence and witness; thus, the final arguments should be conducted once proceedings in all three references concluded. The counsel added that if the court proceeded with the final arguments in the Avenfield reference, it would give the prosecution an opportunity to address gaps in the cases they made in the other two references — Al Azizia and Flagship Investment — which would seriously damage the defence’s case. Barrister Hashmi said that the prosecution had created misconceptions and misled the court, leading it to fix the Avenfield reference for final arguments without closing of evidence in the other two references. He said “the accountability court has consistently held that all three references will be decided simultaneously”. He further stated before the court that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) while upholding the above-mentioned order

of the accountability court held that the identical witnesses, where there was an apprehension of defence might be prejudice, might be testified all together. Barrister Hashmi argued that although the accountability court had to conclude the cases against Mr Sharif and his family within a certain timeframe, the Supreme Court had also provided that a deadline should not be an excuse to compromise the due process of law. He requested the court to dismiss the application.

E D I T O R I A L
Eid-ul-Fitr A Blessing Day after Ramadan
A T
lhamdulillah, the month of mandatory fasting is coming to an end: he noble Qur’an has clearly expressed the act of “Fasting” as a blessing and not a calamity: “Allah desires ease for you, not your discomfort. He desires you to fast the entire month, and that you may magnify Him for giving you His guidance, and that you may give thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185). Taqwa: Eid ul Fitr is one of the best rewards for Muslims. Having attained the wealth of Taqwa and spiritual correctness during the daily dawn to dusk “fasting work out,” the Muslim-worshippers are successful in becoming self disciplined. The positive change makes them feel at peace; immediately next thing for them happens to be the most exciting festivity. In other words, upon successful completion of the month of Ramadan, the Eid day is a ‘Thanks Giving Day’ for having gone through a tough exercise towards “self-purification.” Charity: Among other essential elements is paying Zakat (wealth tax) and Fitra to minimize the harsh impact of any prevailing misfortune, hunger or widespread poverty. Therefore, when it comes to this re-
ligious obligation, the Muslims are duty bound to help out the needy people before the Eid Prayer. The Muslims are required to pay Zakat based on their wealth and financial ability. It consists of spending 2.5% of one’s wealth for the benefit of the needy people. The good thing is paying Zakat is considered to be the personal responsibility of all Muslims to eliminate inequality and ease economic hardship of others for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa taalaa. Charity in the form of fitra (fitrana) is obligatory at the end of the Fasting month before the Eid prayer. This again means the real happiness of “EID” lies in sharing our happiness with “the have nots.”, On this happy occasion, good Muslims remember those who are afflicted with poverty, ignorance, disease, or otherwise are less fortunate. Beauty is Muslims on this very day are encouraged to erase their grudges or differences with others. Eid day schedule: After offering the regular Salat ul Fajr (the presunrise prayer), the Muslims will be heading out shortly after the Sun-rise to perform the obligatory prayer in congregation (slaat ul Eid) in open areas, community cen-
tres and mosques. Eid prayer is followed by special Khutba (Sermon) and supplication asking for God’s forgiveness, mercy, peace and blessings for all people across the world. Right after the Khutba is over, Muslims will be hugging each other wishing Eid Mubarak. Then they will be visiting their relatives and friends. Eid gifts (known as Eidie) are given on this precious occasion to children and to immediate relatives. Children will receive gifts in cash or kind; sweets and tasty dishes would be served throughout the day. Altogether, the caring Muslims will be generously donating money; they are likely to be contributing to their local food banks for the less fortunate. Some groups do reserve other activity centres for the full day of fun and celebration, while others would hold public Eid parties in mosques as a means of OUTREACH to the non-Muslim society. Positive Difference: It’s commonly seen that holiday for the nonMuslims is a chance to indulge in worldly pleasures, or involve oneself sinfully or immorally and unlawfully, yet for Muslims, there is zero tolerance in the eyes of Allah
subhanahu wa talaa for committing forbidden acts. This is certainly a good contribution to maintain a morality enriched nation. Let’s be warned that ‘EID’ doesn’t give an automatic ticket to take a vacation from Islamic responsibilities, and no wasting of “time or money” is permitted either, simply because our obedience and submission to the “Will of Allah” cannot be compromised under any circumstance. We have learnt that ‘EID’ is a chance to multiply good deeds by bringing pleasure to the hearts of other Muslims as well as by devoting for the sake of Allah SWT. Most importantly, it’s the spirit of thanksgiving that make the Muslim Umma stronger all over the globe for the accomplishment of an act of dedication and submission to the total will of Allah, the Almighty. The most beautiful fact is festival of Eid ul Fitr is aimed at promoting peace, strengthening the feeling of brotherhood and enabling the Muslims to move on with their lives normally as a refined Umma in the eyes of our Creator. Hence, the Eid and its celebration in Islam carry a distinctive meaning and spirit as they are totally different from the celebrations in non Muslim communities.

Evaluating Zakat-ul-Fitr Distribution

By: Aslam Abdullah Source: Islamicity uslims all over the world will distribute at least $15 billion at the end of the month of fasting under the obligation of Zakat-ul-Fitr. So let’s examine what is Zaka-ul-Fitr. It is a fixed amount of money every Muslim including the unborn babied (conceived) has to pay before the end of the Eid prayers, that marks the end of the month of fasting. Ibn Umar reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) prescribed the payment of Zakat-ul-Fitr of Ramadan for people, for every freeman, or slave, male and female among the Muslims-one saa of dried dates, or one saa of barley. (Sahih Muslim, Book 12, Hadith 16) One saa of barley or dried dates is between 2.5 kg to 3 kg. In the US, the cost of 3 kg of barley is 11 dollars for regular and about $35.00 for organic. The cost of dried dates is about $15.00 for regular and $35 or more for organic. It is obligatory upon every Muslim to pay ZAKAT AL Fitr before the end of the Eid prayers. Even though some scholars say that it can be paid before the end of the Eid day. Implied in this obligation is the assertion that

Without such there is no peace, justice nor pluralism. Kudos to them for Building Bridge of real pluralism. “Jewish group prays in Vancouver to protest Israel’s action”. (Star Metro Vancouver May 22-2018). Members of a national grassroots Jewish organizations held a memorial on Monday outside the Vancouver offices of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), praying for an end to Israel’s killings of Palestinians in Gaza: “The gathering marked the ‘Shavu’ot’ holiday with prayers, from the Jewish memorial tradition
Zakat-ul-Fitr is to be distributed before the Eid Prayer. Usually, in Islamic Centers and masajid in the US, this does not happen. The amount of money collected during the Eid prayers for Zakat ul Fitr is counted after the prayers, deposited and then distributed. Often, this might take days and weeks before it is distributed. Zakat-ul-Fitr is different than Zakat ul Mal in terms of payment and time of payment. It is the same for all, and no one is exempt from it, and it has to be paid and distributed before Eid prayers. In order to follow the Sunnah of the prophet for this obligatory payment The Prophet of Allah said, “The fasting of the month of fasting will be hanging between earth and heavens, and it will not be raised up to the Divine Presence without paying the Zakat-al-Fitr.” It is also paid to purify those who fast from any indecent act or speech and to help the poor and needy. It is paid to the same categories of people and institutions as mentioned in Surat Al-Tawbah, [9: 60] for the regular zakat on accumulated wealth.
They include:

Rabbi David Mivasair, (righteous honest person) a member of Independent Jewish Voices Canada, lit a candle and described his ‘Grief’ an sadness’ at the mounting death toll-but also his concern that pro-Israeli Government organizations don’t speak for all Canadian Jews: “They are not speaking for many other Canadian Jews: “CIJA’s stance is inconsistent with religious tenets at the heart of Jewish tradition: “Tens and thousands of Palestinian-demonstrators have gathered periodically along the Gaza-Israel boundary since March 30, protesting include a decision by the U.S. to move its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv: “Long standing Israeli and Egyptian blockade into Gaza and what they describe as the 70 yrs. displacement of Palestinians from their homes during the creation of Israel: “Hope is that growing international attention will unite peace advocates to pressure world leaders to intervene on behalf of Palestinians”. Under the present system of collection, the Zakatul-Fitr cannot be disbursed instantly at least in the US and other Western Countries. In order to distribute it before Eid, Muslims need to bring about change in the collection of Zakat-ul-Fitr 1. Every Institution should have special collection boxes and account for Zakat-ul-Fitr 2. The institution should mark a deadline for this collection. 3. They should calculate and deposit the collection instantly and distribute it before the Eid prayers either to individuals or institutions. 4. They should advertise in advance so that the qualified people can apply. 5. The whole process should be transparent, and the privacy of the recipient should be preserved. Ethiopia accepts peace deal with longtime rival Eritrea
Ethiopia announced it will fully accept the terms of a peace agreement with neighbouring Eritrea in a major step towards calming deadly tensions with its decades-long rival. The news comes hours after Ethiopia lifted a state of emergency on Tuesday in what had been the most dramatic reform yet under new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has promised change after more than two years of deadly anti-government protests demanding greater freedoms. However, it is the prospect of peace with reclusive Eritrea that has come as the latest, and largest, surprise. The agreement signed in 2000 ended a two-year war. “The suffering on both sides is unspeakable because the peace process is deadlocked. This must change for the sake of our common good,” Fitsum Arega, the chief of staff for the prime minister’s office, said on Twitter. “The Eritrean government should take the same stand without any prerequisite, and accept our call to bring back the long-lost peace of the two brother nations as it was before,” the ruling party wrote on Facebook. Eritrean officials in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, could not immediately be reached for comment and Eritrea’s information ministry posted nothing on the development. Ethiopia became landlocked
in 1993 after Eritrea, which comprised the country’s entire Red Sea coast, voted to leave. But the neighbours were soon at war over the demarcation of their shared border, a conflict that would leave 80,000 people dead and degenerate into a stalemate. Hundreds would die in subsequent years in periodic border clashes after Ethiopia’s refusal to accept the ruling of an UN-backed boundary commission that divided up contested territory between the two countries. The development on Tuesday night came as the ruling party also announced the East African nation will open parts of state-owned enterprises in sectors such as energy, aviation and telecoms to private investment. French protesters rally against Netanyahu’s Paris visit
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was met by scores of protesters calling for him to be tried as a war criminal on Tuesday at the Paris stop of his tour of European capitals. “We are here to say hello to Netanyahu and remind him and the world of the dozens of unarmed Palestinians that have been killed by the Israeli army in the last month,” said 19-year-old student Antoine, waving a flag expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people. The official objective of Netanyahu’s visit was to rally French President Emmanuel Macron’s support against

Iran, as well as inaugurate a joint FrenchIsraeli cultural and scientific project. On the streets, however, the focus was firmly on Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people and the Israeli army’s actions at the Gaza border. “I feel particularly concerned by the inhumane killing of the young medic Razan al-Najjar, which was against international law,” said 20-year-old medicine student Yasmine who attended the protest in medical garb. The photograph of the 21-year-old Palestinian medic shot dead by an Israeli soldier on June 1 was brandished by dozens of protesters at the rally to the chants of “Israel murderer, Macron accomplice”. “We are scandalised by Israel’s war crimes, the latest of which is firing on civilians in Gaza with explosive ammunition,” said Jacques, 65, a member of the France Palestine Solidarity Association one of the organisers of the rally. “Today, Mr Macron and Mr Netanyahu are inaugurating the France-Israel season, which is a scandal because Israel violates France’s values.” According to its official mission brief the “France-Israel 2018 Season” has as objective “to mark a

Knesset disqualifies bill seeking equal status for Jews and Arabs
Israel’s Knesset disqualified a bill that called for all citizens to be treated equally, rejecting the argument it must recognise the rights of its Arab minority as equal to the Jewish majority. The text of the bill stated its objective was “to anchor in constitutional law the principle of equal citizenship while recognising the existence and rights of the two, Jewish and Arab, national groups living within the country”. The bill was sponsored by Balad, an Arab political faction and member of the Joint List - an alliance of four predominantly Arab parties - in the parliament. Haneen Zoabi, a Balad member of the Knesset and one of the bill’s sponsors, told Al Jazeera the proposed legislation aimed to make Israel more democratic - especially in its treatment of Arab citizens. “The cancellation of our bill shows that democracy and equal rights do not go hand-in-hand with the way Israel defines itself as a Jewish state. “It is clear that Israel considers democracy, or even demanding it, a threat to its existence,” Zoabi added. According to the bill, Israel is defined as “a state for all its citizens, whose regime is a democratic regime” and, therefore, must make itself a state for both national groups, Arabs and Jews, equally. It also called for a separation of religion and state, while guaranteeing the freedom of worship for all. Jamal Zahalka, who co-sponsored the proposed legislation, told Al Jazeera he wanted to place Arab citizens of Israel on equal footing with their Jewish counterparts. “If Israel wants to remain a democratic state, it must treat all of its citizens equally,” he said. Under the current Israeli political and legal system, Jewish citizens are accorded preferential treatment and privileges. Zahalka acknowledged, however, even if the Knesset’s presidency allowed the bill to come to the floor, the Jewish majority in parliament would
have immediately defeated it. The proposed bill l also aimed to negate key Israeli legislation called the “Law of Return”, which allows any Jew to become an Israeli citizen and take up residence in Israel. Speaker Yuli Yoel Edelstein denounced the bill in a statement on the Knesset website on Tuesday. “This is a preposterous bill that any intelligent individual can see must be blocked immediately. A bill that aims to gnaw at the foundations of the state must not be allowed in the Knesset,” Edelstein said. “This is the first time since my appointment as Knesset speaker five years ago that I am recommending that the presidium disqualify a bill.” Israel was founded in the aftermath of the 1948 war on what was then Palestine. Most Palestinians were expelled from their towns and homes by Jewish militias, or fled over the course of the war. Harvey Stein, an American-Israeli activist and filmmaker, told Al Jazeera the issue is complicated, mainly because “Israel is a paradox”. Stein praised Zahalka “for trying to make Israel more democratic” saying that “Israel wants to be a Jewish state and a democratic state at the same time.” “Considering that most Israeli members of the Knesset are right-wing, they would rather have Israel Jewish first, and not necessarily democratic,” he added. Source: Al-Jazeera
new step in our [France-Israel] economic relationships and to renew the vision that French people have of Israel and that Israeli people have of France”. “They said it was because of anti-terrorist measures, you’ve seen my face do you think I’m a terrorist?” Jacques asked. The demonstration was largely peaceful although a small scuffle with police resulted in at least one demonstrator being detained. On Monday, three of France’s top journalist unions also protested Netanyahu’s visit in a joint statement stating that Macron receiving Netanyahu at this time was “unbearable”. The document denounces the killing of civilians in Gaza and the particular targeting of journalists and
asks how it is not “inconceivable that the prime minister’s visit goes on as if nothing had happened, while a number of NGOs and legal experts are talking about war crimes”. Anger against Israel’s policies has been running high in France as a poll carried out in May 2018 found that 57 percent of French people have a “bad or very bad” image of Israel, 73 percent believe Israel bears “a heavy responsibility for the absence of negotiation with Palestinians” and 57 percent believe that “Israel is a threat to regional stability”. “I believe this is because of the current government of Israel,” said Jacques, “it is a farright government such as Israel has never known.”Source: Al-Jazeera

Any action done on this night such as reciting the Quran, remembering Allah, etc. is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Qadr. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, related that the Prophet said: Look for Laylatul Qadr on an odd-numbered night during the last ten nights of Ramadan (Bukhari). The Prophet said: “Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim recorded from Abu Huraira). Here are some tips of things we can do on the Night of Power and the time before and after it.
1. Take a vacation for Allah.
We take a break from our jobs for almost everything in life. Why not this time to focus on worshiping and thanking our Creator. If this is not possible at least take a few days off if you can. This can make it easier to stay awake at night to do extra Ibadah, not having to worry about getting to work the next day. It will also facilitate doing Itikaf.
2. Do I’tikaf.
It was a practice of the Prophet to spend the last ten days and nights of Ramadan in the masjid for I’tikaf. Those in I’tikaf stay in the masjid all this time, performing various forms of zikr (the remembrance of Allah), like doing extra Salat, recitation and study of the Quran. They do not go outside the masjid except in case of emergencies, therefore, they sleep in the masjid. Their families or the masjid administration takes care of their food needs. I’tikaf of a shorter period of time, like one night, a day or a couple of days is encouraged as well.
3. Make this special Dua.
Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: “Allahumma innaka ‘afuw-

your cubicle at work alone with a couple of dates, now is the last few days you’ll have this Ramadan to spend with your family. Use it wisely.
12. Take the family to Tarawih
Have your spouse and kids missed Tarawih most of Ramadan because you weren’t there to drive them to the Masjid, which is too far away to walk to? If so, do all of yourselves a favour and bring everyone for Tarawih in these last ten nights.
13. Attend the Dua after the completion of Quran recitation
Almost all Masjids where the Imam aims to finish an entire reading of the Quran in Tarawih prayers in Ramadan will be completing their recitation in these last ten nights. They may try to end on one of the odd nights and read the Dua at the end of a reading of the Quran. Attend this particular night’s Tarawih prayer with your family. See if you can attend different Masjids’ Tarawih prayers the night they finish reading the Quran. 14. Finish reading a book on the Prophet Read about the Prophet’s life, which can increase your love for him and Islam by seeing how much he struggled for Allah’s sake. It may inspire you to push yourself even harder during these last ten nights. This community is built on sacrifice.
15. Plan for the next year
Once you’ve done a self-evaluation, you can plan on where you want to go, at least in the next 12 months. Laylatul Qadr is a great night to be thinking about this (without taking away from your worship), since you’ll Insha Allah, be in a more contemplative state. You may choose to dedicate one night of power for evaluation and one night for planning for the next year.
16. To do list for the Night of Power
Make a to do checklist for each Night of Power. This should define how you would like your night, the one better than a thousand months, to be used. Pick things from this list and define the sequence you would like to do things in. This will help you avoid wasting your time in unproductive chats which common in the festive atmosphere of Masjids at the Night of Power. B.C. housing tax to cause vacation property price dip: Royal LePage British Columbia’s new speculation tax on out-of-province buyers will likely convince a wave of owners to sell their vacation properties, pushing down home prices, said a forecast from Royal LePage. By the end of September, the real estate company is expecting the average price of a recreational home in B.C. to reach $531,333, a 2.8 per cent drop from last year’s average of $546,444. Under B.C.’s speculation regulations, owners outside the province will be taxed 0.5 per cent this year, but next year will see the rate climb to 2 per cent for foreign investors and 1 per cent for Canadian citizens and permanent residents not living in B.C. but owning properties in the province. Royal LePage concluded the tax would spark a price dip in B.C.’s recreational housing sector after surveying 200 real estate advisors who specialize in such properties between May 15 and June 1. About 55 per cent of B.C. respondents said they think the tax will “weaken momentum within the region and keep sales activity from reaching its true potential,” while 40 per cent thought it would impact prices. Royal LePage chief executive Phil Soper said the tax has already weakened demand
for B.C. vacation homes from Albertans, which he considers “the biggest buying cohort outside of the province.” “You’d think with a strong economy and so much availability, you would see a stronger recreational property market in B.C., but it has been balanced by the recent regulations,” he said. He and his company also predicted a 0.9 per cent dip in recreational home prices in Manitoba and a 7.5 per cent fall in prices in Atlantic Canada, bringing the average price in the region to $228,754. Soper said he attributes Manitoba’s expected decrease to an increase in supply, but said he expects it to be a “short-term blip” because Winnipeg has been one of the most stable recreational markets over the last few years. Trudeau expects ‘difficult’ conversations with Trump at G7
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday he expects “frank and sometimes difficult” conversations with US President Donald Trump on US tariffs at the upcoming G7 summit. The Canadian prime minister will host the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States for an annual G7 summit in La Malbaie, Quebec on Friday and Saturday.“We know certainly that there will be frank and sometimes difficult discussions around the G7 table, particularly with the US president on tariffs,” Trudeau told reporters. He had hoped to put the focus on jobs, security concerns, cleaning up the world’s oceans and empowering women. But officials have conceded the G7 agenda is likely to be overtaken by trade disputes. Last week, the Trump administration unveiled punishing tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from the EU, Canada and Japan, among others. That was met with retaliatory levies from its closest allies, which have raised fears of a trade war and prompted complaints to be filed with the World Trade Organisation. In Washington, Trump economic advisor Larry Kudlow told reporters that Trump would press ahead with global tariffs on steel, and allies including Canada and the EU
should not expect exemptions. He denied America’s trade policies left it isolated from G7 allies, but warned that Trump would “stick to his guns” at the upcoming summit. “There may be disagreements, I regard this as much like a family quarrel. I’m always the optimist, I believe it can be worked out,” Kudlow said. “We will do what is necessary to protect the United States, its businesses and its workforce,” he added. Kudlow also insisted that the US relationship with Canada, in particular, was still “very good.” But observers noted that Trudeau’s pointed rebuke last week, calling for “common sense” to prevail in the US administration, marked a turning point for the worse in the relationship.

Mrs. Naseem Shoaib daughter of Dr. Kamaluddin, was born at Pilibhit in 1938. From all his brother and sisters, Dr. Shams Jilani shared a common bond with Mrs. Naseem. Their family has a long association with literature and Islamic scholarship from the time of the Great Grandfather, Maulana Haji Sheikh Jalal Uddin Jalal, an Urdu poet and Islamic scholar who passed in 1904. The Nani Hameedun Nisa Begum (Maternal grandfather) was also the source of an inspiration for both brother & sister from whom they received early education and human values during their childhood days at Village Khamaria, District Pilibhit.

Iraqi parliament approves manual ballot recount BAGHDAD: Iraq’s parliament voted on Wednesday to hold a manual recount of votes in the country’s May 12 parliamentary election, two lawmakers said, a day after the prime minister said there had been serious violations. The move could hinder the delicate process of forming a new government, raising the prospect of further uncertainty in Iraq, and pits the government and parliament against the election commission, which is meant to be independent. Parliament voted for amendments to the
election law which force the Independent High Elections Commission (IHEC) to conduct a manual recount, after it had initially declined to do so. It also suspended the commission’s leadership, which is to be replaced by nine judges. It canceled the results from overseas voting and those from displaced voters in some provinces, lawmakers Ali Allaq and Khaled Al-Asadi told Reuters. It also ruled out the use in future elections of electronic vote counting devices, blamed for many of the
violations. An IHEC spokesman declined to comment and said he was unauthorized to speak on this matter to the media. Iraq’s highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial council, had said this week that the courts could not force the IHEC to conduct a manual recount because the law stipulated the use of electronic vote counting devices. A spokesman for the council told Reuters on Wednesday that was no longer an issue now that parliament had amended the law.
The three countries and the EU were asking the US “to exempt European businesses doing legitimate trade in Iran from all extraterritorial American sanctions” European firms which have rushed to invest in Iran after the lifting of sanctions over the past three years have the most to lose from the renewed sanctions PARIS: France, Britain, Germany and the EU on Wednesday sent the United States a
joint official request for their companies to be exempt from punitive measures resulting from fresh US sanctions on Iran. “As allies, we expect that the United States will refrain from taking action to harm Europe’s security interests,” said the letter to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said the three countries and the EU were
asking the US “to exempt European businesses doing legitimate trade in Iran from all extraterritorial American sanctions.” “Those businesses must be able to pursue their activities,” he wrote on Twitter. The plea comes as European leaders scramble to save the hard-fought deal signed between Iran and world powers in 2015 under which Tehran agreed to limits on its nuclear capacities in exchange for relief from crip-
pling economic sanctions.US President Donald Trump announced he was abandoning the deal last month — which will mean new sanctions on the Islamic republic and punitive measures for those who trade with it. French automaker PSA said Monday that it would pull out of two joint ventures to sell its cars in Iran to avoid the risk of punishing fines. Source: arabnews.com
Many Yazidi women and girls have been brainwashed or killed in captivity, while those who have managed to escape after years of enslavement and rape are left struggling to survive without an income or identity papers. Baroness Nicholson, founder and chair of the British-based AMAR Foundation which provides education and health care in the Middle East, said the world’s religions should urgently recognize the Yazidi faith. PARIS: The world is failing Yazidi women forced into sex slavery by Daesh militants in Iraq and Syria, with 3,000 still unaccounted for, according to the head of a charity dedicated to helping survivors recover from their horrific experiences. Murad Ismael said many Yazidi women and girls have been brainwashed or killed in
captivity, while those who have managed to escape after years of enslavement and rape were left struggling to survive without an income or identity papers. “Every inch of these women’s body and soul is broken,” said Ismael, executive director of Yazda.“And yet the international system is failing to embrace them and help them return to normal life,” said Ismael ahead of the Foundation’s Trust Conference on modern slavery in Brussels on Wednesday. “These girls, they just want to resume school, go back to normal. But they’re not given any income or support so many of them have to be a father and a mother to their siblings, in addition to being a survivor.” The Yazidi, a religious sect whose beliefs combine elements of ancient Middle Eastern religions, are regarded by Daesh as devil-
worshippers.Thousands of women and girls of the Yazidi faith were abducted, tortured and sexually abused by Daesh fighters who invaded their homeland in northwest Iraq, in 2014.The militants were driven out a year ago, but most Yazidis have yet to return to their villages and nearly 3,000 women and children remain in captivity. “We used to get over 100 rescued women and girls arriving to our office each month, but now we only see five or six,” said Ismael. “The pace of rescues is slowing down because many of these women have already been killed or brainwashed by their captors.” Manal, a young Yazidi woman who was kidnapped at the age of 17 by Daesh in 2014 and is now being supported by Yazda after being rescued, said her captors beat her until she was unconscious.“When I woke up

Vancouver Activists demand “Hands Off Syria!” “Stop Bombing Yemen!”
On May 11, MAWO organized its monthly antiwar rally and petition drive, focusing on the demands “Don’t Attack Syria!” and “Stop Bombing Yemen!” Antiwar activists and peace-loving people talked with people passing by or at the information table, many who added their signatures on the petitions demanding that Canada end its sanctions and military intervention in Syria, and that the government of Canada also end its $15 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia. The petition against Canada’s arms deal with Saudi Arabia called attention to the government of Canada’s support for Saudi Arabia, the country which has been leading a criminal and brutal war against Yemen. A few days later on May 14, MAWO organized a public forum and discussion titled “Hands Off Syria!” featuring Joe Lombardo, chair of the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) who spoke from New York, United States via videoconference and Alison Bodine, the Chair of MAWO. Also discussed at the forum was the massacre of Palestinian protesters which had occurred just earlier that day, where over 60 Palestinian demonstrators were brutally killed and over 2,700 injured by Zionist Israeli forces as well as US President
Trump’s announcement to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Agreement. Mobilization Against War and Occupation is continuing to campaign against war and to demand self-determination for all oppressed nations, with public educational forums and antiwar rallies and petition campaigns as reported here, and by organizing and participating in conferences, demonstrations, cultural and community events, both locally and internationally. For more information about MAWO’s upcoming antiwar events and actions visit www.mawovancouver.org or follow on Facebook or Twitter @MAWOVan

Groceries got you down? 6 healthy iftar shopping tips to help you out
W
ith one week’ worth of traditional Ramadan meals left to prepare, you may find yourself making unhealthy choices in the kitchen. Making sure your family is eating well is a process that begins in the supermarket, however, so read on for the top expert shopping tips.
Choose your fats carefully
Cut salt and sugar
These foods often contain high Chomp away on fruits and amounts of sodium, sugars and fats. vegetables They are often less nutritious than frozen or fresh foods. Just as author Michael Pollan writes in his book, “Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual,” “Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.”
Salt and sugar are considered white poison in the world of nutrition. Your intake of simple sugars should be limited to less than five percent of your total daily intake of food. As for salt, it should be iodized and you should not consume more than 1500 mg per day.
Keep an eye on your carbohydrate
Your intake of fats should be limited. Unsaturated fats like vegetable oil, raw nuts and avocados are preferred over saturated fats, such as margarine and butter. Try grilling instead of frying and try to choose low fat dairy products and low fat meats.
Beware of processed and canned foods
Spend the maximum amount of time in the fresh produce aisle and try to choose options that are in season, or even locally grown. Failing that, frozen and sun-dried fruits are an option, while canned fruits should remain strictly off the shopping list due to the syrupy, sugary liquid in which Wholegrain carbohydrates are al- they are stored. ways a winner. They contain more fibers and do not cause peaks in blood sugar levels because they get absorbed more slowly. Whole wheat bread, brown rice and bran are great options for iftar sandwiches, biriyani dishes and snacks, as opposed to refined carbohydrates like white bread and commercial cereals that are very high in sugars.
Read food labels carefully
The serving information on food labels tells you the size of a recommended single serving and the total number of servings per package. Be aware of how many servings you are consuming and choose foods with more fibers, proteins, vitamins and minerals and less sodium, sugars and trans-fats. Source: arabnews.com

STRESS - The Good & The Bad
By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
S
tress is a natural and essential part of life. Our stress response is designed to protect and preserve our lives. We need a certain amount of stress in our lives but not too much for too long. Our bodies are constantly responding to positive and negative stress. Positive stress motivates and drives us. Often we get excited about working on a new project at work, moving to a new city, changing our careers and so on. Negative stress affects our physical and mental health and can rob us from experiencing true happiness. Every individual has potential and each of us has passions which we have never explored! The main reason that we don’t reach out for our potential in our lives is because of our fears. If you want to experience living an intentional life of true happiness, you can’t run from stress or avoid it. Stress is part of our daily life as breathing, eating and drinking water. Stress is constant in our lives. There is a reason for stress. Stress discovers our dark places and bring them out for attention. Each stress that we perceive as an obstacle is actually an opportunity. You know what consequences there are if you neglect a wound or a sore. It gets worse and can eventually cost you your life! Stress will get worse if you ignore it and don’t respect the gift it is offering you. Denying stress, like denying a wound, can make you worse on spiritual, psychological and physical levels. The situational or acute stress can shift into chronic, continual unabated stress. Stress is your guide and can be quite a gift. Try to observe what stresses you . Then try to embrace your stress and be com-
passionate w i t h yourself. S o m e times clients tend to be so hard on t h e m selves. They keep blaming themselves for everything that’s not being as should be. These individuals often feel victimized and overwhelmed by the stress in their lives. The more we live in denial or running away from our stress, the more insidious ways our stress will discover to get our attention. You can run away from stress for a while but it will eventually find a way to get your attention. It will surface in your psychological or spiritual well-being at first and later affect your physical body. Stress invites you to make new choices in your life and these choices require action. As you learn to deal with the stresses in your life, your incredible potential will unfold, leading you deeper on the path to true happiness. Some immediate effects of stress on your mind and body: - Memory: becomes vague and inexact - Learning: difficulty learning and problem solving Perception: is limited and narrow - Attitude: defensive and aggressive - Mood: negative, want’s to flee Living from the inside out is the only way to overcome stress and truly experience an authentic sense of happiness in your lives! You are Richer and than You Think other humans
By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker f you have read this sentence anywhere and thought, “How is this possible? My expenses keep getting bigger and my income never grows – how am I richer than I think?” Count your blessings. We might not have all the money in the world but we certainly have a lot more valuable things that often the richest can’t put a price tag on.
Let’s take a look at these blessings.
We are born. Out of the millions of chances to not make it, all of us today beat the odds to come to life. We surpassed all the risks that our mothers took to bring us to the world. Once we did arrive, most of us were born to parents who love us unconditionally. We were born to relatives and cousins who have their utmost belief in our capabilities to change the world and be the best version of ourselves. We have our own cheerleaders in our family and friends. We have intelligence. We learned to walk. We learned to talk. We learned to count and spell and write. We have access to education and this expands beyond a university degree. We have technology that can make us experts in the subjects that peak our curiosity. If we aren’t able to access computers, we have libraries with books holding infinite knowledge. We have access to healthcare. We have our health. All of us have a battle we are fighting with our body at one point of the other, but we have also overcome a lot more diseases due to our amazing immune system that we tend to forget. If we do need to give our systems a boost, we have access to medicine. Humans have overcome famine, diseases, defects, predators,
Jo’s Discount Tel: 604.501.9388
to bring you to this day. We have our brains. We never have to worry about company because we have ourselves in our mind. We can choose to have this voice inside our head to be our number one supporter or critic. We have bodies that let us do mundane everyday tasks that many cannot do. We can see, hear, feel, touch, and smell everything great and bad in this world. We have our organs fighting for us every second. We are the deadliest and luckiest animals alive. We have our faith. We have access to a superior being if we choose to rely on when we need to give our thanks or ask for help. We have a mental power to believe in things and hope for a better tomorrow. What other animal can do this? We have access to become whoever we want, whenever we want, and the gift of time, resilience, and company to make it happen. This is not to say we do not come across hurdles in achieving our goals and making our dream a reality. But we are able to dream. Success is a lot of different things other than money. A goal can be astronomically important to saving lives, furthering humanity through technological innovation, to extremely necessary needs such as feeding people, taking care of our vulnerable members of society, achieving financial peace, or taking care of our next generation. Let’s band together to count our blessings and remind ourselves that we are enough. With a positive attitude and gratitude, we can achieve our goals no matter what they are. Let’s be kind to ourselves and people around us and with those actions we will realize that we truly are richer than we think. Info::asmashums@gmail.com

26 Sports Sarfraz proud of England Test draw despite Headingley hammering Ramadan 23,1439 June 8, 2018
Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed insisted he was proud of his youthful side even after an innings and 55-run defeat at Headingley denied them a Test-series victory in England. That overwhelming loss, completed inside three days on Sunday, meant the two-match campaign ended all square at 1-1 following what Sarfraz said was Pakistan’s “perfect” nine-wicket victory in the first Test at Lord’s. Defeat left Pakistan still looking for their first Test series success in England since 1996, when fast-bowling greats Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were in the side. Despite skittling England out for just 184 in their first innings at Lord’s, Sarfraz elected to bat after winning the toss in Leeds. While the Headingley pitch provided a typically good surface, overhead conditions quickly became humid and cloudy, creating a swing-friendly environment that made batting difficult. Even so, Pakistan would still have expected to have made more than their 174, which featured a third fifty in as many Tests from teenage leg-spinner Shadab Khan.
That total meant they were always chasing the game and, were just one individual effort away from conceding a large firstinnings lead.Having fielded brilliantly as a side at Lord’s, Pakistan saw Hasan Ali drop a routine catch when Jos Buttler was on four. The dashing Buttler punished Pakistan with an unbeaten 80 in an England reply of 363. Pakistan, 189 behind on first innings, then slumped to 134 all out in 46 overs second time around as their top order again failed to fire. But having also overseen a victory over Test debutants Ireland in Dublin during this tour, Sarfraz was pleased with Pakistan’s progress. “When we came here people thought we will not win one game but the way we played at Lord’s everything was perfect, our fast bowling was perfect, our batting and fielding were perfect,” Sarfraz told reporters. “It’s disappointing that we had a chance to win the series but unfortunately we didn’t play well here.”
