151st Canada Day Ahead! JULY 1st On Sunday, July 1, 2018 this year we are going to be celebrating anada’s 151th birthday in as usual way with a fun-filled evening of live music and dance performances, family activities and a spectacular fireworks show choreographed to music. There are plenty of opportunities to show off our national pride throughout the country on Canada Day. As expected, Canadians are going to mark the anniversary with more excitement. ‘Canada Day’ being a federal statutory holiday, is celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour in recognition of the “July 1, 1867 enactment” of the British North Americas Act (BNA), also called “The Constitution Act, 1867.” Historically speaking, the Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the ‘Dominion of Canada.’ As a result, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Currently, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. This Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of

C

Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. However, the ‘Dominion Day’ changed into ‘Canada Day’ on October 27, 1982. The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons. This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some festive locations celebrating Canada Day. The celebrations will be all over Canada. Similarly, Surrey, BC has its own celebration features that include the world-class entertainment, great food, games and amusement rides, and indeed a spectacular fireworks finale. Surrey Canada Day will be held at the same venue as last year, the newlynamed Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre. Cloverdale Pakistan Canada Association planed to celebrate 151st Canaday Day and Eid Picnic celebration on June 24 at Crescent Beech Park South Surrey. Pakistani Candian Cultural Associations arranged on July Ist at Crescent Park South Surrey. The BC Muslims Association celebrating Eid Bash and Canada Day on July Ist at Masjid Al-Salaam Burnaby. And in all above events people would celebrate the special day by joining BBQ parties and enjoying the fireworks all over the country. Indeed, the event serves as a good bridge to facilitate Muslims to build ties with Canadians of other faiths. Despite the insurmountable difficulty, a tolerance level among the members of multi-cultural society is a real blessing, as it has been

playing a big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada an attractive country to live peacefully. Every year, tens of thousands of Canadians celebrate Canada Day in grand style in the nation’s capital flocking to Parliament Hill to join with the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Of course, the Canadians are entitled to celebrate their legacy, pride and opportunities. In nutshell: Parliament Hill is the focal point for Canada Day celebrations, with a giant stage featuring Canadian performers throughout the day, the noontime playing of Oh Canada and a flyby by Canada’s Snowbirds aerobatics team and other military aircraft. Certainly, Canada Day unites all Canadians regardless of creed, culture or ethnicity; it helps us understand the significance of the Canadian life. In other words, it brings us together, strengthens our communities, and helps us understand the significance of the Canadian life. As Canadian history

reflects the wonderful diverse cultural races, the importance of celebrating Canada Day means a lot to all Canadians. For happy “Canada Day” celebrations, Canadians and the government must be on one page, and the media should play its role without bias to promote love and affection among all. As the Liberal party of Canada is surviving to resume power, the respect and image of Canada among the international countries is finally normalising faster than previously thought. Credit goes to the Trudeau-government for being really pro-people without bias/discrimination. Long Live Canada!

Surrey Council has failed in providing leadership on Gang Violence

By:Imtiaz Popat for Council Surrey Community Alliance candidates for Surrey City Council were in attendance at Wake Up Rally at Surrey City Hall in solidarity with the community that is grieving and angry at the loss of two young teenagers to gang violence. The SCA believes that Gang Violence is one of the key issues in the upcoming City Council election this fall. City council must take leadership in addressing this crisis. We are dismayed that the current council has failed on this issue. SCA fully supports the call by #StandUpForOurKids to the creation of the Multi-stakeholder committee. This should involve the law makers/ enforcers, Surrey School District personnel and most importantly community members. We need a multi-pronged approach to tackle this issue. We are proposing that Surrey should consider its own Police Force which is more accountable to the community. Many say that this could help in addressing the gang violence and other public safety issues the citizens of Surrey have endured for too long. Enough is enough,” Surrey Deserves Better”.

strongly condemn Saturday’s attack on Edson Alberta Mosque. Police are investigating the attack. “Its shocking that such a hateful attack can take place in a small city of Alberta where nearly 40 Muslim families have been living for decades”, said Imam Syed Soharwardy. Based upon the footage from the surveillance camera it looks like an arson. Therefore, we expect that the police will not rest unless they capture the culprit or culprits. Its government’s responsibility to safeguard the freedom of every citizen. Places of worship of all religions must be respected and protected. We are thankful to the first responders in Edson for controlling and extinguishing the fire quickly which prevented the further damage. We hope this was an isolated incident which does not reflect the society in Alberta. In Alberta the lives and properties of all citizens are safe, and we must keep it this way. ISCC and MAT are grateful to Mr. Jim Eglinski, MP Yellowhead, Premier Rachel Notley and several other politicians for standing with the Muslim community in Edson and condemning the attacks on the Edson Mosque. May God protect all of us from the evil of hate mongers. Amen.

More than 100 election candidates’ particulars declared ‘extremely dubious’

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), during its scrutiny of candidates for the 2018 general elections, has so far found that more than 100 candidates are bank defaulters, DawnNewsTV reported on Tuesday citing sources in the Election Commission of Pakistan. The SBP has declared the particulars submitted by these candidates as “extremely dubious”. According to the SBP report, which has reportedly been sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), PPP’s Hina Rabbani Khar and Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo — a hopeful from NA-143, NA-144 and PP-186 — have their names on the list. Ahmed Shah Khagga (PP-193), Ghulam Ahmed Shah (PP-193), Asim Irshad Khan (NA-124), Ameer Ahmed Siyal (NA-116), Khalid Masood (NA-30), Abdul Sattar Bachani and Zulfiqar Bachani (both from NA-224), Ameer Waliuddin Chishti (NA-256), Ayaz Khan (NA-257) and

Changez Khan (NA-258) are also among the defaulters, as per *DawnNewsTV’s* sources. Azhar Khokhar (NA-52), Zainab Ahsan (PP-109), Umar Farooq (PP-113), Mushtaq Ahmed (PP-136), Ali Asim Shah (PP-185), Muhammad Ali Tarkai (PK-46) and Chaudhry Shakeel Gulzar (PP-66) are also among those who owe money to banks. The scrutiny of nomination papers to exclude ineligible candidates from the election race started today, a day after returning officers (ROs) completed the process of receiving nomination papers from prospective candidates. According to ECP spokesman Altaf Ahmad Khan, particulars of 12,000 candidates have so far been sent to the National Accountability Bureau, Federal Bureau of Revenue, SBP and other relevant institutions — out of which 7,500 had been verified with the help of an online system.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday released the asset details of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, saying that the PTI chief has declared before the electoral body that he holds net assets worth Rs38 million. The affidavits attached to his nomination papers — copies of which are available with Dawn.com — reveal that his net assets as on June 30 of the current financial year are Rs38,694,493. The PTI chief raked in Rs4,776,611 the past year and paid Rs103,763 in taxes. His income sources

are agriculture — he owns 168 acres of agriculture land — MNA’s salary, PCB pension and bank profit. Additionally, the cricketer-turned-politician has two Dollar accounts holding $379,760 and $1,470 respectively, and one Pound account which holds £7,068. He also has a Euro account, but it’s empty. The only foreign travel expenditure Khan reportedly incurred this year was during his threeday trip to the United Kingdom which cost him Rs240,000, as per the documents submitted to the ECP. A four-day trip to Turkey in 2017 has been indicated as “sponsored”. Though he does not own any businesses within the country or abroad, he does own 14 properties within Pakistan, most of which are stated as “inherited”. Khan’s Bani Gala residence is stated to be worth Rs11,471,000, however, his documents do not state ownership of any foreign real estate. Khan has not mentioned the number of vehicles he owns, leaving the space blank. Source: The Dawn.com

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday approved a massive administrative reshuffle in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan in what has been described as a move to ensure transparent elections next month. The changes were proposed by the caretaker federal and provincial governments and were okay-ed by the election commission. Following are the province-wise details of the shuffle in bureaucracy, as issued by the ECP: Punjab: The services of 18 officers of Punjab police have been surrendered to the federal government 28 senior officers of Punjab government have been repatriated to the federal government, The transfers of 64 officers of Punjab police have been approved The transfers of 34 secretaries and managing directors in the

province have been okayed. The transfers of 35 deputy commissioners have been approved. The transfers of 77 SSPs, AIGs, SPs and Additional SPs have been approved as well Sindh: The transfers of 14 secretaries in the province have been okayed, The transfers of two AIGs, 14 DIGs and various SSPs have been approved, The transfers of six commissioners and 33 deputy commissioners have been approved Balochistan The transfers of three secretaries in the province have been okayed, The transfers of six commissioners, 33 deputy commissioners and 64 assistant commissioners have been approved, The transfers of 31 sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs) have also been approved The details of transfers and postings for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to be issued shortly.

Khawaja Haris, the lead counsel of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, stated on Wednesday that the prosecution team of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had “miserably failed” to shift the burden of proof on the Sharif family in the Avenfield properties reference. During a hearing of the reference in an accountability court today, Haris, in his concluding arguments in the case, argued that scores of judgments of the Supreme Court (SC) had set certain preconditions for shifting of the onus of proof on the accused, which were not followed in the ongoing case. Unlike the final arguments of NAB’s prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi, who had mainly read out the witness statement of Wajid Zia for about four days and did not mention any legal precedence related to the case, Haris submitted copies of Pakistani and Indian court judgements to establish that the bureau did not follow set criteria. Referring to Section 14(C) of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), Haris said that though the law says that

the accused needs to prove their innocence, it can only be done once the prosecution establishes a case beyond any shadow of doubt. Citing apex court verdicts in cases related to Khalid Aziz versus NAB and Hakim Ali Zardari versus NAB, the defence counsel argued that the superior court had laid down four prerequisites for shifting the burden of proof on the defendant. .He said that the apex court made it mandatory for the prosecution to prove that the accused was holding public office when the alleged property was purchased; that his pecuniary resources were not commensurate with the assets in his possession; the amount of declared wealth of the accused person when the assets were acquired; and finally, the prosecution must prove objectively that the assets were not proportionate to the financial means.Haris claimed that despite the SC’s clear directions, the prosecution, in this case, had miserably failed to fulfill even one of the conditions. Haris maintained that not a single prosecution witness, including

No breakthrough in Turkey-IranRussia talks on Syria constitution

A tripartite meeting between Russia, Turkey and Iran to discuss the formation of an allinclusive committee tasked with drafting a new Syrian constitution had ended without a major breakthrough, and a plan to reconvene in a few weeks time. The officials of the three nations acting as guarantors of a ceasefire in the war-torn country met on Tuesday in the Swiss city of Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations. In a brief statement issued after the meeting, UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said “some common ground was beginning to emerge” around the formation of the committee. “Constructive exchanges and substantive discussions took place on issues relevant to the establishment and functioning of a constitutional committee.” For its part, the Syrian opposition said it needs to receive guarantees about the scope and form of the constitutional body before endorsing its mandate. “There are many aspects that are not yet clear about the prospected constitutional committee,” Yahya al-Aridi, spokesperson for the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) told Al Jazeera from the Turkish city of Istanbul. “We are asking many questions about the formation, functions, terms of reference of this committee. Who will be accredited to participate? Is it going to be part of the transitional process? That is why there is a delay in the presentation of the list of names that should be part of it on behalf of the opposition.” In the past few days, de Mistura said the Syrian government had already presented a list of 50 names to be part of the committee that would be tasked with drafting Syria’s new constitution. But al-Aridi said there is an attempt on behalf of groups who are not recognised by the Syrian opposition to become part of the body. “There are small groups that are not considered by the people as opposition who are rushing to present their credentials,” said al-Aridi, without giving any more information. “The only opposition group that can participate seriously in a constitutional committee is the SNC as per the Security Council Resolution 2254.” The Syrian opposition is afraid that the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assadmay hijack the work of the constitutional committee with the end result that, like for the 2012 Constitution, it would leave too much power in the hands of the government. A sticking point in the forthcoming constitutional debate will be the authority of the Syrian president. Al-Aridi said the opposition, which

I nt

was not part of today’s tripartite meeting in Geneva, was waiting to know which bylaws would regulate the work of the committee and its legitimacy. “Who is to legitimise the constitution they will come up with?” alAridi said. Aridi added that the creation of the committee should not belittle the other issues at stake in the Syrian political process under Security Council Resolution 2254. “If the whole Syrian issue is condensed into the creation of the committee, this is ridiculous. It has to be part of the implementation of Security Council resolution 2254 and not divert the attention from the discussion of the other issues.” The meeting in Geneva followed up on the agreement signed at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian city of Sochi in January, whose final statement called for the creation of a constitutional commission formed by government, opposition and Syrian civil society. The creation of the constitutional committee would the first step for a political solution of the conflict as mandated by the Security Council Resolution 2254. De Mistura had earlier declared that “besides government and opposition, it will be important that independents, civil society, experts, and women - at least 30 percent of women - all find their place into this constitutional committee.” The UNled peace process based in Geneva has laid out the so-called four “baskets of reform” for a political settlement of the crisis. They include the drafting of a new constitution, parliamentary elections, the creation of a non-sectarian transitional government and the fight against terrorism. But the talks have made little progress so far as government and opposition have failed to find an agreement over the fate of al-Assad. Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising, more than 465,000 Syrians have been killed and over 12 million - half the country’s population - have been displaced. Source: Al-Jazeera

US withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

The United States has withdrawn from the United Nations’ top human rights body accusing it of “chronic bias” against Israel, in a move that was criticised by human rights groups and described as regrettable by foreign leaders. The decision to pull out of the UN Human Rights Council was announced on Tuesday by Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN. “We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organisation that makes a mockery of human rights,” she said alongside US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington, DC. Minutes later, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, the UN high commissioner for human rights, called the announcement by US President Donald Trump’s administration “disappointing, if not really surprising”. “Given the state of human rights in today’s world, the US should be stepping up, not stepping back,” he added. The EU said the move “risks undermining the role of the US as a champion and supporter of democracy on the world stage”, while British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called it “regrettable”. On the other hand, Israel, a major ally of the US, praised Washington’s “courageous” move. The US’ announcement comes after the council voted last month to probe the killing of scores of Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip and accused Israel of excessive use of force. Al Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan, reporting from Washington, DC, said the US exit from the 47-member Geneva-based body” did not come as a shock”, as it was something that Haley had talked about almost from the moment that she became the US ambassador to the UN in early 2017. “She was quite adamant at the time that the council held a very deep anti-Israel bias and that the US was going to try to root it out; otherwise it would leave the council,” said Jordan. “But the primary reason why the US is pulling out of the council now is because of its efforts to reduce or eliminate of the unfair criticism, in the US’ view, of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians,” she added. “In the larger scheme of things, this really is a way of standing by its ally, Israel, but also using the opportunity to try to exert its own vision of human rights - even though a number of international human rights groups are roundly criticising the Trump administration for leaving the council.” In their remarks, both Haley an Pompeo said the decision had been made after a long year of efforts to shame the council into reform. Haley said the move “is not a retreat from human rights commitments” and accused the council of being “a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias”. “Look at the council membership, and you see an appalling disrespect for the most basic rights,” she said Haley, citing Venezuela, China, Cuba and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Trump

administration’s move also comes as it faces widespread criticism for detaining children separated from their immigrant parents at the US-Mexico border. On Monday, al-Hussein called on Washington to halt its child separation policy. “The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable,” said the top UN human rights official. Washington’s withdrawal is the latest US rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal. Jamil Dakwar, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Human Rights Program, said Trump’s “misguided policy of isolationism only harms American interests.” Twelve rights and aid groups, including Human Rights First, Save the Children and CARE, had earlier warned Pompeo the US withdrawal would “make it more difficult to advance human rights priorities and aid victims of abuse around the world.” In May, the council voted to send a team of international investigators to probe the deadly shootings of Palestinian demonstrators by Israeli snipers in the Gaza Strip during weeks-long rallies protests the Great March of Return along the fence with Israel. The US and Australia cast the only no votes at the time, while the Israeli ambassador in Geneva attacked the council for “spreading lies against Israel.” Speaking to Al Jazeera from New York, Louis Charbonneau, the UN director at Human Rights Watch, said “unfortunately the US is placing protecting Israel from criticism for its abuses over all else”. He added that despite some shortcoming, the Human Rights Council “has done some very good work, highlighting human rights abuses around the world, scrutinising and bringing facts to light which enable us to holding these countries to account. Charbonneau cited a commission of inquiry set up for wartorn Syria, saying that it “has been working for the last seven years uncovering ghastly abuses and reporting publicly on them”; the establishment of a fact-finding mission on Myanmar, “where we’ve seen ethnic cleansing on a scale that is mind-blogging”; as well as “looking at the problems in South Sudan, Burundi, Congo and North Korea”. UN chief Antonio Guterres: Gaza ‘on brink of war’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the “most serious escalation” of violence in the Gaza Strip places the besieged enclave on the “brink of war”, urging Israel and Hamas to recommit to a 2014 ceasefire. The UN chief said in a report obtained by news agencies that he is “shocked” by Israel’s use of live fire since border protests began in Gaza on March 30. Guterres said its military has “a responsibility to exercise maximum restraint” except as a last resort. The report was sent to the council last week in advance of a meeting on Tuesday on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “The killing of children, as well as of clearly identified journalists and medical staffers by security forces during a demonstration are particularly unacceptable,” Guterres said. “They must be allowed to perform their duties without fear of death or injury.” Israel has not yet responded to the accusations. Guterres also told the Security Council that he “unequivocally condemns the steps by all parties that have brought us to this dangerous and fragile place” in

the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He warned that actions by Hamas and other Palestinian groups not only risk Palestinian and Israeli lives but “efforts to restore dignity and the prospects of a livable future for Palestinians in Gaza”, citing rockets fired at Israel and attempts to breach the Gaza-Israel fence by some protesters. Since weekly mass protests began along the Israel-Gaza border on March 30, at least 130 Palestinians have been killed and 13,000 others wounded by Israeli army fire. “The US is very strongly - particularly this administration - on the side of Israel, so they will block anything that they do not like,” Bays said. “Of course we’ve had the general assembly take action with a resolution. I think it worths reminding viewers that on the central issues, whenever the Security Council has discussed them recently, it’s been a situation of 14-1 with most of the Security Council - all but the US - on one side and the US on the other. “I think reports like this - although they won’t have any effect - they certainly raise the issues again and I think show that the

international community isn’t particularly happy with the way things are moving and being directed by the Trump administration.” Guterres renewed his call for an independent and transparent investigation of the shooting deaths in Gaza. Israel, which says Hamas has used the protests as cover for attacks on the border fence, has rejected the appeal and argued that the use of force is justified to defend its borders. The marchers have pressed demands for a right of return for Palestinian refugees to their families homes which they were forced to flee 70 years ago. More than 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled in the 1948 war over Israel’s creation. Two-thirds of Gaza’s two million residents are internally displaced people. But he said that “only by changing the reality on the ground - by recognising and addressing the plight of Palestinians in Gaza, ensuring that all sides recommit to the 2014 ceasefire understandings, and supporting Egyptian-led efforts to restore control of the legitimate Palestinian government in Gaza - can we preserve the possibility of a

viable, independent and fully representative Palestinian state and avert another disastrous, lethal conflict.” He reiterated that any unilateral step made by any party to alter the character or prejudge the final status of Jerusalem “are inconsistent with United Nations resolutions and are an obstacle to peace”. Guterres condemned the ruling made by the Israeli High Court on May 24 to demolish buildings in the Bedouin community of Khan Al Ahmar. “It may constitute a grave breach of international humanitarian law,” Guterres said. The secretary-general also condemned Israel’s settlement activity that he says “continue unabated”, highlighting Israel’s decision on May 30 to approve 3,500 housing units in the West Bank - the largest batch of new housing since June 2017. The UN considers the expansion of settlements on land earmarked for a future Palestinian state to be illegal. Guterres said the construction must “cease immediately and completely”. Trump accuses Canadians of smuggling Senate passes pot bill, paving way for legal cannabis in 8 to 12 weeks U.S. goods across border U.S. President Donald Trump is accusing Canadians of buying goods in the U.S. and smuggling them home across the border because of tariffs while pledging that Canada will no longer “take advantage” of the U.S. Speaking to the National Federation of Independent Business in D.C., Trump cited a story in a “major newspaper” about Canadians travelling to the United States and “smuggling things back in to Canada because the tariffs are so massive.” It was not immediately clear which report he was referring to. Trump said the tariffs on common items in Canada are “so high” that Canadians buy products, such as shoes, and wear them and “scuff ‘em up” to smuggle them across the border. The U.S. president appeared to confuse duties, a longstanding fee on items purchased abroad, with Canada’s recently proposed tariffs, which are not in effect until July 1. Notably, Canada does not plan to put a tariff on shoes. During his remarks, Trump said Canada likes to talk, and cited what he called the “tremendous” trade deficit the U.S. has with Canada. He once again floated going for bilateral trade deals with Canada and Mexico, rather than modernizing NAFTA. His comments come amid an ongoing trade and diplomatic spat. Canada has pledged $16.6 billion in countermeasures to respond to U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. The dollar-for-dollar retaliations are on imports of steel, aluminum, and other products from the Unites States, including a wide-spanning list of goods such as coffee, chocolate, condiments, toiletries, beer kegs, whiskies, various household items, and motorboats. These tariffs are not set to come into effect until July 1, as consultation on the final list ended late last week. Trump expressed hope about resolving the ongoing dispute, but pledged: “Canada is not going to take advantage of the United States any longer.” “We have to change our ways. We can no longer be the stupid country, we want to be the smart country. So hopefully we’ll be able to work it out with Canada,” Trump said. Asked about Trump’s comments on his way out of a cabinet meeting, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said he had not heard Trump’s allegation, but said that he has every confidence in his border officers. “The CBSA does an extraordinary job of administering the border from the Canadian side. There are 400,000 people that go back and forth across that border every single day, there’s $2.5 billion in trade that goes back and forth across that border every day,” Goodale said. As Trump delivered his speech, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland began testifying at a House of Commons committee on the current state of the Canada-United States trade relationship. Freeland said Canada’s

proposed tariffs on American-made goods were strategically chosen to have “minimal impact on Canadians.” “We have sought where possible to avoid intermediate goods and we have sought to put on the list products which can be easily sourced from either Canadian or non-U.S. suppliers,” Freeland said. Freeland once again hit back against the Trump administration’s suggestion that Canadian-made steel and aluminum poses a national security threat to the U.S., calling the idea absurd and “insulting.” “We know that no one will benefit from this beggar-thyneighbour approach to trade. The price will be paid, in part, by American consumers and by American businesses. And I think we all agree that it is important for Canada to stand up in defence of the international rulesbased order, and we will do so.” Freeland testified with Canada’s chief NAFTA negotiator, Steve Verheul, seated beside her. Freeland said the tariff dispute is separate from ongoing NAFTA negotiations, and she insisted that a “win-win-win” deal between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. is still “possible.” “And we continue to work hard – and patiently – to achieve this outcome,” Freeland said, adding that the federal government will be working on negotiations throughout the summer. Freeland also thanked federal politicians and Canadian premiers, including Ontario’s premier-designate Doug Ford, for their support. She said the national unity “sends a powerful message to the United States.” Because Canada’s economy is significantly smaller than the U.S. economy, Canadians have more to lose in the event of a trade war, says Ian Lee, an associate professor of business at Carleton University. “If we do proceed, this is going to hurt us a lot more than it hurts the United States if both proceed down the road to retaliatory tariffs,” Lee told CTV News Channel on Tuesday. Lee acknowledged the outpouring of support for the federal government’s approach, but he said Canada is “absolutely dependent” on cross-border trade. Imposing tariffs on American-made goods would be “much more damaging” for Canada, he suggested. ... Source: CTV News

On a day when newly released data showcased in tangible numbers the stark realities of the growing global refugee crisis, the United States -- long considered a haven for the oppressed -- doubled down on anti-migrant rhetoric while Canada struck a decidedly cautious tone. The annual Global Trends report from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees was released Tuesday, showing the worldwide total number of displaced people reached a record 68.5 million last year, due to global wars, violence and persecution. In 2017 alone, more than 16 million people were newly displaced. The statistics also show Canada became the ninth-largest recipient of asylum seekers, more than doubling the number of claims in a single year at 47,800. And for the first time in five years, the United States became the largest recipient of new asylum applications with more than 330,000 claims lodged in 2017 -- a 27 per cent jump from the year before. But U.S. President Donald Trump made it clear Tuesday that asylum seekers who cross the U.S.Mexico border illegally are not welcome in America. In a speech Tuesday, Trump accused many of these migrants of being child

and human smugglers who try to “game the system,” invoking references to the notorious international criminal gang MS-13 attacking children with knives, not guns, “because it’s much more painful.” “And we’re allowing these people into our country? Not with me. We’re taking them out by the thousands,” Trump said. The Trump administration has come under fire for its so-called zero-tolerance policy, in which asylum seekers who cross illegally into the U.S. are charged with federal crimes and separated from their children. The children are being detained in guarded, fenced enclosures, prompting widespread condemnation and protest. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been called upon to lend his voice to the chorus of condemnation, but so far Trudeau has demurred. On Monday he would only say he would not “play politics” on the issue, and he did not attend question period in the House of Commons on Tuesday. Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen and Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale largely repeated comments made Monday, in which they said they found the images of children being torn from the arms of their parents and kept in cage-like detention areas “trou-

Senators have voted to pass the federal government’s bill legalizing recreational marijuana by a vote of 52-29, with two abstentions, paving the way for a fully legal cannabis market within eight to 12 weeks. “I’m feeling just great,” said Sen. Tony Dean, who sponsored the bill in the Senate. “We’ve just witnessed a historic vote for Canada. The end of 90 years of prohibition. Transformative social policy, I think. A brave move on the part of the government.” Dean said he thought the Senate functioned well throughout the process and he was proud of the work the Red Chamber did. “Now we can start to tackle some of the harms of cannabis. We can start to be proactive in public education. We’ll see the end of criminalization and we can start addressing Canada’s $7-billion illegal market. These are good things for Canada.” Initially, the government had planned for the bill to be passed by both houses of Parliament in time for retail sales to begin by July 1. That timeline was pushed back after the Senate requested more time to review the bill. Now that the bill has passed, it’s up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet to choose the actual date when the legalization of recreational marijuana becomes law of the land. Bill C-45 comes with a provisional buffer period of eight to 12 weeks to give provinces time to prepare for sales of recreational marijuana. The Senate and the House of Commons battled over the bill for months. The Senate had proposed 46 amendments to the Cannabis Act. The Liberal government rejected 13 of those proposed changes last week — including one provision that would have affirmed the provinces’ right to ban home cultivation of marijuana. Quebec, Manitoba and Nunavut all want to forbid their citizens from growing recreational marijuana at home, even after cannabis is legalized federally. The Senate suggested the federal government affirm the provinces’ right to do so in the Cannabis Act. “We have a bill that has an overarching goal to reduce the marijuana use among young people in this country and what it does right off the get go is normalizes it,” said Conservative Sen. Leo Housakos, former Speaker of the Senate. “There’s nothing in this bill that indicates to me that we’re tackling the problem, which is increased marijuana use among young people.” News of the bill’s passage drew immediate response from some of the government’s critics on social media.

“One of the strong recommendations by experts was that we ensure personal cultivation of four plants at home,” Trudeau told reporters last week. “We understand there are questions and concerns about this, and we understand also that it will be important to study the impacts of what we’re doing and whether there can be changes made in three years, but we need to move forward on better protecting our communities.” A motion was moved today that would have seen the amendment returned to the bill, but senators defeated it by a vote of 45-35. Another significant Senate amendment that was stripped from the bill would have created a public registry of investors in cannabis companies. That amendment was crafted by Conservative Sen. Claude Carignan to keep criminal gangs from using offshore tax havens to invest in Canada’s cannabis industry. Another significant Senate amendment quashed by the government would have banned the distribution of branded “swag” by pot companies, such as T-shirts, hats and phone cases that display a company logo. Independent Sen. André Pratte, who disagrees with the government’s decision to force provinces to accept home cultivation, said he was angry the bill passed without the major amendments posed by the Senate. “Of course I am disappointed, and also a little bit angry that they didn’t take more time and of course did not accept the amendment. We believe that it was a reasonable and flexible solution to the problem,” he said. “[The Liberals] have to decide at one point; what kind of Senate do they really want,” Pratte said. “Do they want a really independent, modern Senate? If so, well, they have to take our amendments into consideration seriously.” On Monday of this week, 205 MPs voted to send the bill, minus 13 of the 46 Senate amendments, back to the Red Chamber. NDP MPs supported the bill, while those on the Conservative benches voted against it. Source: CBC News

Global refugee numbers reach record high, U.S. and Canada take in record numbers bling.” Transport Minister Marc Garneau went a step further, saying the situation involving child migrants in the U.S. is “simply unacceptable.” But it wasn’t far enough for NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan. She wants Trudeau to “state the obvious - that the United States is no longer a safe country for migrant children.” “Canadians are calling for action. It is about lives, real lives, real people, real children being subjected to torture,” she said. “Canada must not be complicit in this inhumane treatment of children. Will the prime minister find the courage and suspend the safe third country agreement?” Hussen repeated that Canada is monitoring the changes in U.S. immigration policy and what effects it will have on asylum seekers in the United States. Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel, who formerly has been critical of the Trudeau government’s approach to irregular border crossers in Canada, seemed to support this more measured approach Tuesday. “The safe third country agreement when it was negotiated included very strict objective criteria that are constantly monitored by government to ensure that the U.S. remains a safe third country,” she said. “I

think it’s very important for us as a country to make that determination based on that objective criteria rather than political media reports.” Antonia Rodriguez, a delegate of the UN Refugee Agency and an advocate for child refugees and the rights of children, says the U.S. child migrant policy is “inhumane.” “Being inside a family and being separated and caged, it’s terrible. It cannot be accepted by the international community and we have to do something,” she said. She believes Canada should explore the possibility of taking more refugees than it currently accepts. Global trends indicate that new, more collaborative solutions are needed to ensure countries and communities aren’t left alone to deal with influxes of migrants, said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “We are at a watershed, where success in managing forced displacement globally requires a new and far more comprehensive approach,” he said. “No one becomes a refugee by choice, but the rest of us can have a choice about how we help.” Source: CTV News

FAITH

By:Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid ask Allaah to relieve your distress and take away your sorrow. It should be noted that Islam does not bring any hardship. Rather one of the most important aims of sharee’ah is to relieve people of hardship. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Allaah does not want to place you in difficulty” [al-Maa’idah 5:6] It is not permissible for a Muslim to listen to the shaytaan and let him fill his life with doubts, waswaas and paranoia, for if he does that he will lose out in this world and will not gain anything in the Hereafter. Such whispers (waswaas) are merely tricks of the accursed Shaytaan who wants to cause grief for those who believe. And Allaah is the best of protectors and the most merciful of those who show mercy. What you must do is put a stop to all these whispers, and not pay any attention to bad thoughts. It is sufficient for you to say the dhikr that is prescribed in sharee’ah when you see something good, and Allaah will protect it against the evil eye and destructive envy (hasad). Remembrance of Allaah (dhikr) and the evil eye or envy cannot coexist. It was narrated from Abu Umaamah ibn Sahl ibn Haneef that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Why don’t you invoke blessings, for the evil eye is real.” [Narrated by Maalik in alMuwatta’ (2/938); classed as saheeh by alAlbaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (6/149)] Al-Zarqaani said in Sharh al-Muwatta’ (4/320): “..why don’t you say, Baarak Allaahu feek (May Allaah bless you), and that

H

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in his last sermon: “All humankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; also a white (person) has no superiority over a black (person), nor does a black have any superiority over a white - except by piety and good action.” Abu Dharr said the Prophet told him: “You are not better than people (of other races) unless you excel them in piety.” Al-Tirmidhi

Obsessing Over the Evil Eye

would cancel out what is feared of the evil eye and take away its effects.” It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Aamir ibn Rabee’ah from his father (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If one of you sees in himself or his brother something that he likes, let him pray for blessings, for the evil eye is real.” Narrated by al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak (4/240). He said: “This is a hadeeth whose isnaad is saheeh, although they (alBukhaari and Muslim) did not narrate it with any mention of invoking blessing.” And al-Dhahabi agreed with him. It was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami (556). It says in al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (13/31): This indicates that the evil eye cannot cause any harm if the one who may harm with the evil eye invokes blessings. What is prescribed for everyone who admires something is to invoke blessings, for if he prays for blessings, the harm must inevitably be diverted. Invoking blessings means to say: Tabaarak Allaah ahsan al-khaaliqeen, Allaahummah baarik fihi (Blessed be Allaah the best of creators, O Allaah bless it).

Al-Nawawi said: “It is mustahabb for the one who may harm with the evil eye to pray the blessing for the one who may be harmed and say Allaahumma baarik wa laa tadurrahu (O Allaah bless and do not harm him) and Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata illa Billaah (As Allaah wills, there is no power except with Allaah).” Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari (10/205): “The one who admires something should hasten to pray that the thing he admires be blessed, and that will be a ruqyah on his part.” In Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (1/547) it says: “The remedy for the one who may cause harm with the evil eye when he sees something he admires is to remember Allaah and invoke blessing.” Shaykh al-Fawzan said in al-Muntaqa question no. 87): If the one who may cause harm with the evil eye fears that he may harm the thing he is looking at, then he should say: Allaahumma baarik ‘alayhi (O Allaah, bless it). Similarly it is mustahabb for him to say: Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata illa Billaah (As Allaah wills, there is no power except with Allaah), because it was narrated from Hishaam ibn ‘Urwah from his father that when he saw a thing that he liked or he entered one of his gardens, he would say: Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata illa Billaah (As Allaah wills, there is no power except with Allaah). If the one who may cause harm with the evil eye always says this dhikr, then he will ward off its harm, in sha Allaah. It says in Fataawa al-Shaykh ‘Abd al-Kareem al-Khudayr:

The Muslim should not let doubts, illusions, suspicion and excessive fear of the evil eye overwhelm him so much that he becomes afflicted with psychological illness and the like. He should think positively of Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, and understand that whatever befalls him only happens by the will of Allaah, may He be blessed and exalted. So let him turn to Allaah, because He alone is able to ward off harm and relieve distress. End quote. If you see something that you like, then pray to Allaah for blessing, and do not pay attention to anything else. Allaah will protect it because of your du’aa’, and will ward off all harm from it. Do not let yourself keep on fearing it, for Allaah does not want that for His slaves. Also keep striving to make yourself see the will of Allaah in all things, for He has great wisdom in what He gives and withholds, lowers and raises, and there is none to put back His Judgement [cf. alRa’d 13:41] and none can change His Words [al-An’aam 6:115]. Always remember – O slave of Allaah – that this world and everything in it is too insignificant for people to envy one another and transgress against one another for its sake, as al-Mutanabbi said: What hearts desire is too insignificant for people to transgress against one another or destroy one another in pursuit of it. This is also indicated in the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Why would one of you kill his brother?” [Narrated by Imam Maalik (1746) and Ahmad (15550) and others.] And Allaah knows best. www.a2youth.com

people. In essence, you reap more reward and at the same time fix the condition of your soul for the pleasure of your Rabb. Allah gives you an unquenched thirst for more ibada with sincere intentions with hope and fear for Him. If you find yourself on constant reproach of your soul. Nafsil-lawwama is good for the slave of Allah in this duniya and not for the aakhira. This means, you are taking account of your-self for your bad deeds before the day of accounts reach. It is in the best of our interests not to be under those whom Allah says; ‘…and shaytaan has beautified for them their evil deeds…’ [surat an Nahl 63] may Allah safeguard us. If you don’t feel safe from the punishment of Allah no matter how many good deeds you have done. This is because you do not know whether Allah has accept-

ed them or not. It helps you to purify your intentions and we know that only the good deeds done with proper procedure and intentions are best. Allah is Al- Mujeeb [The Answerer]. We should make du’a for everything including his love. The best guidance is the guidance of Rasulullah. He taught us to say the following dua;‘Allahumma inna nas’aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk. Wa hubba `amalin yuqarribuna ila hubbik’ [oh Allah I ask you for your love, and the love of those whom you love and the love of those actions which will bring me closer to your love]. Signs of Allah’s Love for a Slave

Author: Bint Ambeyi ow do I know if Allah loves me? This is a common question among those who seek to earn the pleasure of Allah and ultimately achieve entrance into Jannah. For sure, there is no precise way that we can use to tell if Allah loves a slave as it falls in the matters of the ghayb. We only depend on signs from the ayat of Allah to measure if we are from amongst those whom He loves. If you find yourself in constant mention of Allah in your thoughts and actions. This could be a sign. In a hadith Qudsi, Allah says, ‘if my slave mentions me to himself I mention him to myself ’. There are many ways which we can do this as taught by our beloved Rasulullah. This involves making adhkaar [words of remembrance]. If you hold fast to the book of Allah. Know

that the Qur’aan is the direct speech of Allah and whenever you recite, you are reciting the words of your Lord. Allah will make it easy for you to recite, memorize and act upon with sincerity His book when He loves you. If you have a sincere love for those whom Allah loves. For example the anbiyaa, the shuhadaa, and the righteous of His slaves among angels and mankind. Read through the biographies of those whom the love of Allah was manifested for example Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Muhammad [Alayhimu salaat wa salaam] etc. Rasulullah said, ‘a person will be with those whom he loves’ this is in regards with tomorrow in the aakhira. On the same note, your friends and companions should be people who are watchful of the love of Allah. Allah will make easy for you acts of ibada which are ordinarily not practiced by most

Vancouver’s Muslim community anything but monolithic

By:DOUGLAS TODD January 31, 2011 When it comes to Muslims, Metro Vancouver continues to shatter the kinds of stereotypes that tend to frighten people. This metropolis of 2.1 million people is developing its own unique Muslim community, with a particular eclectic style and pluralistic attitudes. The Muslim populations of Canada and Metro Vancouver are expected to triple by 2031, according to both Statistics Canada and last week’s major Pew Forum report, titled The Future of the Global Muslim Population. http://vancouversun.com/news

Could Marijuana Use Make Injuries More Painful?

By Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer

Marijuana use may affect how much pain people feel and the dose of painkillers they need following a traumatic injury, such as an injury from a car accident, a new study suggests. The study found that, after experiencing a traumatic injury, marijuana users reported higher levels of pain, and needed higher doses of opioid painkillers, compared with patients who didn’t use marijuana. The researchers stressed that the findings are preliminary, and more studies are needed to confirm the results. But if the results are confirmed, the study could have implications for treating pain in marijuana users — a population that may be growing due to increased legalization of the drug, the researchers said. “These data suggest that patients with marijuana use and abuse issues merit special consideration during acute pain management,” the researchers, from the Swedish Medical Center’s Trauma Research Department in Englewood, Colorado, wrote in the June 19 issue of the journal Patient Safety in Surgery. Marijuana and pain The study researchers analyzed information from about 260 people who were involved in motor vehicle accidents between January and April 2016 and who were admitted to trauma centers in Colorado and Texas. Of these patients, 21 percent (54 patients) reported using marijuana recently or tested positive for marijuana on a drug test, and 6 percent (16 patients) reported daily or

near-daily marijuana use. (Marijuana use was reported four times more frequently in Colorado, where the drug is legal for medical and recreational purposes, compared with Texas, where the drug is illegal for both purposes.) About 9 percent of participants tested positive for prescription or “street” drugs other than marijuana, including amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methamphetamine and opiates. Patients who used marijuana but not other drugs consumed 7.6 milligrams of opioid medications a day while in the hospital, on average, compared with 5.6 milligrams for patients who didn’t use marijuana or other drugs. What’s more, when asked to report their level of pain on a scale of 0 to 10 (with 0 being the lowest pain and 10 being the worst), marijuana users had a daily pain score of 4.9, on average, compared with 4.2 for nonmarijuana users. These effects were less pronounced in patients who used other drugs in addition to marijuana, the study found.

Youth Program Awarded for Fostering Civic Responsibility

Surrey, BC – L. A. Matheson’s Mustang Justice Program was officially recognized today as the inaugural winner of the City of Surrey Mayor’s Award for Fostering Civic Responsibility. The award recognizes an agency, school or program that is making a significant and positive impact to the community and our youth. “The Mustang Justice Program is a prime example of a local program that positively engages our youth and helps them develop civic responsibility as a core value,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “The program fully encompasses the ideals behind this award of respect, cooperation, citizenship, innovation, civic pride, community impact and inspiring others to act. We are pleased to shine a light on the Mustang Justice Program and the dedicated teachers and students who are a part of it.” The Mustang Justice Program was formed by Annie Ohana, Social Justice Program and Aboriginal Department Head at L.A. Matheson Secondary School, and is supported by Mrs. Gurpreet Kaur Bains, Language Department Head. Under the leadership of Annie and Gurpreet, the program has evolved into a student led social justice initiative with Grade 8-12 students. “It’s not at all surprising to me that Annie and Gurpreet would be behind an initiative

being recognized for supporting youth, good citizenship and the community,” says Surrey Board of Education chairperson Laurie Larsen. “They have been the driving force behind many social responsibility programs in their school community and Mustang Justice encompasses that. I also commend and thank the Mayor for initiating the Mayor’s Award for Fostering Civic Responsibility, as a great way to promote and reward such important work in our community.” The core purpose of the program is to foster responsibility in high school students and a desire to improve the community. A key feature of the program is its focus on social service, social responsibility and dedication to systemic solutions to community issues. Mustang Justice initiatives are diverse and include Pride Week, Indigenous Week celebrations, anti-racism events, soccer camps, community events and mentorship. As part of the award recognition, Mustang Justice received $10,000 as a contribution towards the continued operation and enhancement of the program. The award is part of the Mayor’s Action Plan on Gang Violence Prevention, a strategic initiative under the City’s Public Safety Strategy.

Stages Of Grief

back. 4-Depression-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, self-pity, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic.

rief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or some other loss, the stages of grieving are somewhat the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person MUST go through the five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. But, as stressed, ALL five stages must be completed for healing to occur. 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving. 3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. What If being happy is easier than you thought?

Y

By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker es, being happy with a family is the most blissful thing. It comes when family has love for each other, unity, and good communication. Family is made of grandparents, parents, children, aunts and uncles, and more. Some families are nuclear too. When all members know their boundaries and puts others needs ahead of theirs leads to happiness and harmony.

Atmosphere. Mood. Action.

When there is love, trust, and relaxed atmosphere in the house, it affects is extended to the moods of family members and ultimately their actions. We are very polite and courteous with strangers or coworkers which does not continue once we are home after work. We are tired and take our family for granted even if we don’t want to. We do not take care to be polite or behave any which way we want with carelessness in our actions. We are aware that no matter what we do or say our families will understand and stand by us. If this hurts our family or done when they are themselves in a bad mood, we snap at them and are generally impatient in our actions. The seeds of anger and discontent are sewed by such small or big incidences which might not seem to be in our control, but is. We are all busy fighting a daily battle of livelihood. There are situations beyond our control or capacity but family should always come first. We are energetic and positive with clients, coworkers, patients, and friends which drains from our system when we are in our own private homes. We think this is alright and family will under-

stand but consistent occurrences like this hurts the ones closes to us. Our children can observe this. It spoils the mood and atmosphere of our home and adds distance slowly yet steadily. We live in a house together but in an individual way. If there is any serious problem, we may help each other but the atmosphere is unpleasant on a daily basis. We hear parents complaining that children give more importance to friends and family or children complaining that parents are busy in their lives. On family days, children choose to go out with friends when these plans collide resulting in hot discussions and fights. If they do have to go with parents they sulk, aren’t in good moods. When they go with friends, parents are hurt. There are many instances like this that happen daily.

Need for Balance.

We should strike balance somewhere. The impact of these behaviours isn’t short term but transcends into the general atmosphere we associate with our home. Unfortunately, there is no course or textbook that outlines how to be a good child or parent. These lessons are learnt daily in real time at home. Children see their parent’s behaviour, and their children observe their behaviour. Info::asmashums@gmail.com

Canada should be doing more for those fleeing violence and persecution: Rempel Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today marked World Refugee Day. “We are truly blessed to live in an open and welcoming country where Canadians willingly open their doors to the world’s most vulnerable,” said Rempel. “We know that under Justin Trudeau, the ratio of LGBT refugees has significantly decreased. For example, the initiative to resettle Iranian LGBT individuals has almost completely stopped. This is unacceptable,” said Rempel. “The Trudeau government used to allow us to resettle thousands of Iranian LGBT refugees, but in recent years, we have been given almost no spots,” said Arsham Parsi, Executive

Director of Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees. “LGBT people in Iran are some of the most vulnerable people in the world. That is why the Rainbow Refugee Assistance Pilot program should be fully funded.”“Canada can, and should be doing more to be a voice for the protection of human rights and the world’s most vulnerable. That is why an Andrew Scheer government will make the Rainbow Refugee Assistance Pilot a regular program that is a fully promoted, multi-year program that receives regular funding,” said Rempel.“Canada’s Conservatives will continue to be a voice for the protection of human rights and the world’s most vulnerable,” concluded Rempel.

The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects Celebrates Eid-ul-fitr

The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects in BC held Eid-ul-fitr Kids party right after Eid Prayer on Friday, August 15th at its centre in New Westminster. Celebration was attended by a group of Muslim children and their families. A wonderful celebration produced and hosted by AICP volunteers group. It was successfully put together and left a big smile on the faces and happiness in the hearts of all. The Celebration included children’s games, contests and lots of fun. Gifts were presented to the children, sweets were served for the guests sharing the joy of Eid with everyone. We wish all of the Muslim community peace, prosperity, and success.

11 tips for Muslim teens helping Muslim teens

1.Make your intention sincere All work we do should ideally be for the sake of Allah. That includes the task of bringing someone closer to Allah. That of course means this should not be connected to arrogance, thinking you’re the teacher and everyone else should be lucky you’ve embarked on a crusade to save them. Guidance is from Allah. Make Dua and make sincere efforts and remember Allah can also misguide you if He wills (we seek refuge in Allah from that). 2,Practice what you preach Not practicing what you preach is wrong and you will lose the confidence of anyone, young or old, once they figure you out. Don’t do it. 3.Use the Quran and Seerah (biography of the Prophet) as Dawa guides Read and understand those chapters of the Quran which talk about how the Prophets presented the message of Islam to their people. Read the Seerah (for some good Seerah books)to see especially how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) brought Islam to so many different people, including young people. 4.Talk to people as if you really don’t know them Don’t assume you know someone just by looking at them. You don’t know that the Muslim girl in your homeroom who walks through the school’s hallways as if they were fashion show catwalks is not some-

one you can talk to about Allah because she looks like a snob. Or that the Muslim guy who you’ve never seen at Juma at your university is a “bad Muslim”. Maybe he was never really taught Islam and has no idea what importance Friday prayers have in Islam, especially for Muslim men. 5. Smile Did you know the Prophet was big on smiling? But many “practicing” Muslims seem to have “their faces on upside down” as one speaker once said-frowning and serious. Smiling, being polite and kind are all part of the manners of the Prophet, which we must exercise in our daily lives. If we want to approach others with Islam, we have to make ourselves approachable. Smiling is key to this. But note that being approachable does not mean being flirtations with the other gender. There are Islamic rules for how men and women should deal with each other which have to be respected. 6. Take the initiative and hang out with them Take the first step and invite someone you may have spoken to a couple of times to sit at lunch together, to check out a hockey game or invite them over for Iftar in Ramadan. Also, share difficulties, sorrows and frustrations. Help with homework, be a shoulder to cry on when depression hits, or just plain listen when your friend is upset, discuss common problems and KEEP THEIR SECRETS. There are few things as annoying as a snitch and backstabber. But an important note: if the problem is of a serious nature,(i.e. your friend is thinking of committing suicide or is taking drugs), notify and consult an adult immediately. 7. Show them Islam is relevant today, right

here, right now Young people may think Islam is too “old fashioned” and not in tune with the modern age. Prove this wrong. Show how Islam is really about relating to Allah, which any human being can do, anywhere, anytime. Allah is always closer to you than your jugular vein and He hears and knows everything. Encourage friends to ask Allah’s help during tests, exams, and in dealing with problems at home with parents and siblings. Also point out how Islam relates to teenagers: Islam gives you focus and an understanding of who you are and where you are going, which most of “teen culture” does not. 8. Get them involved in volunteer work with you If you are already involved in the community, get your friend to help out. Ask them to make a flyer for one of your youth group’s events or brainstorm for ideas about activities to hold this school year. This involvement makes them feel part of the Muslim community and deepens your friendship, since you are now working together on something beneficial for both of you. Make sure you thank them for their contribution. 9. Ask them 4 fundamental questions As your friendship develops, you will notice the topics you discuss may become more serious. You may be discussing, for instance, future goals and plans. Khan recommends four questions to ask that can steer the topic to Allah and Islam: Where am I going in life and what would make me really happy deep down inside? b. What do I believe? c. Who should I be grateful to? d. Did I get to where I am today without the

help of anyone1? 10. Emphasize praying five times a day before any other aspect of Islam A person’s main connection with Allah, on a daily basis, is through the prayer five times a day. Don’t emphasize any other aspect of Islam until your friend starts making a real effort to pray five times a day. Emphasize the direct connection one has with Allah in prayer. If they are facing a problem, tell them to pray, and to ask Allah for help in Salah and outside this time. When possible, make it a point to pray together during your “hang out time”. If your friend begins to pray, that is the first step to other aspects of Islam like giving up swearing, treating parents with respect or dressing Islamically. 11. Support them even when they become more practicing Remember, just because a person starts practicing Islam more regularly, this does not mean everything will be okay from this point onwards. There will still be hard times, difficulties. There may be times when your friend may have doubts about his or her newfound practice of Islam. Be there to reassure them.

If you are going to have a life partner with whom you want to hang out sharing your lovely friend stories and photos and specially the text that you received from an stranger will make you dubious and skeptical person in front of your partner at very start of a relationship. The sharing of life does not always mean sharing of personal information, friend message and call record and family delicate matters to your life partner. Your cell phone should be in your purse and in your pocket, you don’t need to carry it in your hand. Build up the trust at first to have given time and importance to your partner not your cell phone. It is very annoying practice that has become very common to check in other’s cell phone specially nowadays it starts in early dating, the temptation to “go through” someone’s phone to see who they are texting, who they receive calls from and what apps they frequently use. Emails, text messages, social media messages and recorded voicemails are sources of information that may help a spouse to put a blame on another of wrong doing and bad activity.

In Islam marriage is a legal contract between two people which is considered integral to a religiously valid Islamic marriage both the groom and the bride are to consent to the marriage of their own free wills. We must be respectful towards each other and protect each other rights and well being and not to spy on each other cell phones. The married mobile phones can defame you and hurt your self esteem and respect that you gain after so much work and effort because communication can never ever be perfect it is always subject to noise and barriers in one way to another. The information we send and receive can be suspicious in one’s opinion and damage the relationship. Never breach your personal mobile data security on request of any person including your close friend, spouse like your passwords, your last most sensitive talk with your colleague and message and call records and don’t give him/her a chance to spy on you. Stay away from your cell phone whenever you are busy in household chores ,this will make your relationship more strong and trustworthy. The trust building phase in a

relationship takes time so never allow your spouse to get uncomfortable with your cell phone. Sticking all the time with mobile and texting makes other feel as if you are married to a mobile phone not a man or women. Recently Saudi Government announced the law that will punish spouses in the case of illegally spying on each other’s phone and will add it to crimes related to information technology. If the information obtained through electronic means of communication, the penalty then is one year in prison and a fine of 500, 000 riyals ($133,000). This step is appreciable because we should respect each other security and information. We should trust each other because it is the first step of a successful relationship so be loyal with the person whole heartedly whom you are going to start a new life with, It is very necessary otherwise your life will become a nightmare. We should give time, space and respect to each other and should not lose patience if there is any misunderstanding occurs. Abusing each other and spying for nothing just to put a blame on each other for the

sake of ego makes life miserable resulting in separation, divorce and sometime suicide attempts and murder of a partner. Mobile phones today has become a wake up call. They are very much insecure like smart phones and androids mobile sets, it can collect all your personal information from your credit card number to password, name and your current location your photos and videos each and every thing that you feel safe. Do not add strangers to your social media account like face book and tweeter etc and in your mobile phone applications. Don’t play with your phone. You should not answer to any stranger contact for nothing just to pass your time. The more you will be careful while sharing your information and contacts the more you will have a peaceful married life.

Would you take some time for yourself today?

I want to show you how to use one of the most effective parts of this 3-step process, one you can use at home – self-hypnosis. By: Hena Hussain

Would you take some time for yourself today?

In my first email, I wrote about the fears I faced in my past and the 3-step process I used to overcome my fear. In this email, I want to show you how to use one of the most effective parts of this 3-step process, one you can use at home – self-hypnosis.

Inner Reflection through SelfHypnosis

In a very real sense, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, since you are in control of your thoughts and your mind. A skilled hypnotist can guide your thoughts to produce the brain wave state where you can learn and change. They will then help you guide your mind by making carefully selected suggestions, based on their knowledge and training, but you can do some of this for yourself. It is a wonderful skill to learn as it will enable you to use your powerful mind to address anything life throws at you.

Preparation

Start by making sure you are in a safe, quiet place. If you’re at home,

make sure your stove is turned off and the doors are locked. Separate yourself from your family and turn your phone off. You are taking 20 minutes to work on helping yourself. Step One •Get comfortable and close your eyes. Focus on your own body. Starting with your feet and working your way to your head, tense and relax all the major muscle groups in your body. Step Two •Breathe deeply, hold, and then let go. •Say to yourself: “I am twice as relaxed.” Repeat and say, “more relaxed still.” Repeat this ten times. •Focus on your breath. Feel the air going down into your lungs and your chest expanding. Feel the tension leaving your body as you breathe out. Step Three •Notice the random thoughts in your mind. •Acknowledge each thought as it appears. •Let it drift away, watch it get smaller and smaller. Let your subconscious take over. Step Four •Imagine a safe place where you feel happy or secure. This may be a memory of a place you know, or it can be somewhere you create in your imagination.

Step Five •Imagine this place as strongly as you can, using all your senses. Make the colors brighter and the picture clearer. Listen for the sounds. Feel the temperature. Feel how the air or the ground feels on your body. Notice the smells around you. Step Six •Tell your mind to find any issue you wish to consider. Imagine you are holding it in your hand. Imagine this issue as an object in your hand. Now use your mind to change how that object looks and feels to you. •Let any negative energy and connotations leave the object. Watch as they float away. Focus on the object as it changes and becomes what you want it to be. It is likely to feel lighter and look brighter. •Turn it around in your hand noticing how the light reflects and refracts. Be aware that it is your powerful mind that is making these important changes. Let the changes happen, as they will, at the pace you choose. •Continue until you know that you have done as much work as is right for you today. Put the object down but be assured you can return to do more work and make new discoveries if you want to. •Focus on your safe and lovely place

and notice any differences here. Promise your safe place that you will return very soon. Stretch out your arms and take a deep breath. Open your eyes and return to your everyday state. After this exercise, you should feel relaxed and peaceful. This process will get easier with practice. If you can, pick a regular time of the day for practicing self-hypnosis. As you let go of layers of fear, you will free up the space for love and freedom. In my book, From Fear to Freedom: My Journey I detail many other useful techniques to bring inner peace.

Celebrated humourist Mushtaq Ahmed Imran Khan challenges ‘whimsical’ rejection of nomination papers for NA-53 Yousufi passes away in Karachi PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz has stated in the documents accompanying her election nomination papers that she owns more than 1,500 kanals of land and has millions of rupees worth of shares in multiple companies. According to the affidavit submitted to the returning officer — copies of which are available with Dawn.com — Maryam on June 30, 2017 had net assets totalling Rs845,953,559, which had increased by Rs44,154,464 in the previous financial year alone. Maryam has also declared that her agricultural land holdings have increased in each of the last three years and currently stand at 1,506 kanals, on which she earned an income of Rs11,587,268 and paid Rs1,703,590 as agricultural tax.

Moreover, the annexes accompanying her papers show that she had millions of rupees invested in multiple companies at the start of the ongoing financial year, totaling Rs18,931,000. Source: dawn.com

Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi, celebrated satirist and humourist, passed away in Karachi on Wednesday, DawnNewsTV reported. The 95-year-old wordsmith par excellence had been suffering from a protracted ailment. He had been born on August 4, 1923, in the Tonk district of Rajasthan, India. After Partition, he migrated to Karachi in 1956. Yousufi, a banker by profession, was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1999 and the Hilal-iImtiaz in 2002 — the highest literary honour given by the government to civilians. His Chiraagh Talay (1961) had established him as a humorist who knew how to use repartee and pun. His other works, Khakam Badahan (1970), Zarguzasht (1976) and Aabi-Gum (1990) only reaffirmed his status as a

great wit and a master prose writer of Urdu. What made Yousufi remarkable was not only his wordplay and repartee, but his refraining from traditional ways of invoking mirth, such as situational comedy or slapstick. His one-liners are often quoted in Urdu’s literary works. Source: dawn.com

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday challenged a returning officer’s (RO) decision to reject his nomination papers to contest the election for Islamabad’s NA-53 constituency on technical grounds. Advocate Babar Awan filed the appeal against the RO’s verdict before an appellate tribunal of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after deliberations with the PTI chief. According to PTI’s Central Media Department, the appeal asks the court to set aside the RO’s decision, which it claims was based on “whimsical and unfounded grounds”. It also addressed the technical faults in the nomination papers that the RO cited as grounds for rejection. Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Adnan Khan had on Tuesday rejected the nomination papers of four candidates, including Khan, for NA-53, because they had not filled up “Clause N” of the affidavit in which they were required to mention “contribution” to their respective constituencies during their previous tenure as lawmakers.Awan has stated in the appeal that the RO’s decision to reject Khan’s papers is “against all norms of justice and fair play” because his client “neither concealed nor wrongly declared any facts”. The PTI chief has been rendering “unmatched” services as a philanthropist in the areas of cancer treatment and higher education, “but in [a] personal capacity”, the appeal further stated. According to the petition, Khan is ready and willing to rectify the shortcomings in

his nomination papers by filling an “otherwise small required entry” in Clause N of the affidavit. “The RO’s verdict has resulted in a miscarriage of justice because instead of issuing a show cause notice to the appellant, he chose to reject his nomination papers,” the appeal claimed while requesting the court to nullify the order. Khan had served as an MNA from NA56 Rawalpindi between 2013 and 2018. There had been resentment in his constituency as he allegedly never visited it during his five-year term despite living in Banigala only a few kilometres away. Khan has decided not to contest the election from the same constituency this time and opted for standing from Islamabad instead. Despite the rejection of the PTI chief ’s papers on technical grounds in two constituencies, NA-95 (Mianwali) and NA-53 (Islamabad), Khan is still left with three constituencies — NA-35 (Bannu), NA131 (Lahore) and NA-243 (Karachi) — to run for the general elections.
