O P I N I O N
The PML-N paradox
T is no more just a matter of a differing tack within the ranks. The latest defections, engineered or otherwise, have virtually wiped out the PML-N’s prospects in the coming elections in south Punjab and made it more difficult for the party to defend its bastion along the Grand Trunk Road. The dice is now more heavily loaded against the former ruling party. The outcome seems already certain before the polls. But the game is not over yet. There is more gloom than hope as the country moves closer towards its second consecutive democratic transition. Politics is a dirty game but it has gotten dirtier with the ‘angels’ getting into the act. Surely, the last-minute rejection of the PML-N ticket by the candidates has not been just an act of jumping off a drowning ship. It was a wellcalculated move not to give time to the PML-N to put up alternative candidates. Only a moron could believe that such large-scale desertion on the eve of elections was driven by the sudden awakening of these politicians’ conscience. The allegation about the role of security agencies in engineering the revolt is not entirely baseless, though there may be some other factors too behind the defections. The swelling number of electable independent candidates has reinforced conspiracy theories about ‘managed’ elections. Those standing independent not only include defectors from the mainstream parties but also members of some religious outfits like the Milli Muslim League, an offshoot of the banned Jamaatud Dawa, that has been refused registration by the Election Commission. The disparate bloc may
affect the electoral scene in parts of Punjab that remains the main battleground. The squeeze may have weakened the PML-N, yet it cannot push the party out of contention. The election scene still remains murky less than three weeks to polling day.
The widening rift between the Sharif brothers has further compounded the party’s predicament.
Surely, the PML-N candidates’ exodus has given a further boost to the PTI that has put its entire stake into the turncoats jumping onto its bandwagon. Unlike in 2013, when the party’s main power base was the youth, Imran Khan is now looking towards the pirs for their blessings. The PTI has certainly gained momentum by taking advantage of the ‘engineered defections’ from the PML-N, but there is still a big question about the party reaching the magic figure or even close to it in order to fulfil Imran Khan’s dream of finally making it to the pedestal of power. It is evident that the long absence of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam from the country has seriously affected the PML-N election campaign. The internal squabble over ticket allocations and the defections have caused creeping demoralisation among the supporters. There is no evidence of any sympathy wave for Nawaz Sharif sweeping across Punjab that could enhance the party’s electoral fortunes. In the absence of his older brother, Shahbaz Sharif has effectively taken over charge of the party and its election campaign. But he has miserably failed to motivate the party supporters let alone inspire
the voters. Notwithstanding his reputation as a good administrator, his uncharismatic persona cannot lift the party up. His politically un-savvy remarks during his recent trip to Karachi put the party in an extremely embarrassing situation. Moreover, the widening rift between the Sharif brothers has further compounded the party’s predicament. The PML-N paradox has been exposed by the two opposite narratives espoused by the brothers. While the elder Sharif and his daughter have shown no change in their hard-line confrontationist position, the younger sibling has taken an increasingly conciliatory path. In fact, Shahbaz has publicly challenged Nawaz’s stance on khalai makhlooq being behind his ouster and undermining his party. As party president, Shahbaz is seeking a vote on the performance of his government in the province rather than on the anti-establishment agenda being pursued by the elder Sharif. While most PML-N candidates would like Nawaz to return home and lead the election campaign, his uncompromising stance has few takers. That is where the line pursued by Shahbaz prevails among the senior members whose only interest is to win the elections. For them, the policy of confrontation can only divide the party and spoil its chances to return to power. The latest defections of candidates have reinforced this argument. The widening policy gulf is also illustrated by Shahbaz’s recent TV interviews where he stressed on the formation of a national government, even if the PML-N won the elections, and opening negotiations for a new political charter involving all stakeholders including the security
agencies in order to face the internal and external challenges faced by the country. This positon is contrary to Nawaz’s uncompromising stance. While there is no option for Nawaz but to come back at the earliest to keep himself politically alive, his presence is likely to sharpen the contradiction within the party between the two opposing positions. Undoubtedly, his leading the campaign would help inspire voters, but it would also intensify the clash with the security agencies. It will be for senior party members and the candidates to choose between the two opposite narratives. Yet another predicament facing the PML-N and its leadership in the run-up to the elections is the possibility of the former prime minister and Maryam Nawaz being convicted on graft charges. The accountability court is winding up the trial. With the judgment all set to be announced before the elections, the entire political dynamics will inevitably change. This situation would present a serious challenge to both the PML-N and the establishment. Some PML-N leaders believe that Shahbaz’s reconciliation offer could provide a way out of this situation. But what would that way out be — one that is acceptable for Nawaz as well as the military establishment? It is quite evident that the establishment will not agree to anything less than the former prime minister leaving politics. It is highly improbable that Nawaz will accept any such deal. There is no resolution of the crisis in sight, which renders the second democratic transition extremely controversial. By: Zahid Hussain

Statement against Canadian Muslims by wife of Raif Badawi (blogger sentenced in Saudi Arabia) I am writing this email to bring to your attention the following news story, as you represent interests of the Muslim community here in Canada and I believe this story needs attention from our organizations before it results in increased Islamophobia and targeting of Muslim women by misguided elements of the society. I am sure you all must be aware of the case of a blogger Raif Badawi who was sentenced in Saudi Arabia by a court for 10 years for what the court perceived as writings against Islam/ establishment. His wife has been in Canada as a refugee campaigning for the bloggers release. She has received widespread support here from various organizations, media and politicians for her cause. The current liberal government of Canada has been actively involved in raising the bloggers issue with the Saudi government. His wife was approved for Canadian citizenship and received it yesterday i.e. on Canada Day (I am assuming as a symbolic gesture from the government). I am saddened and appalled to find out that she has used this occasion (of her become a Canadian) to target Canadian Muslims and provoke Islamophobia and hatred towards Muslims who call Canada
home, instead of embracing values of tolerance, inclusiveness and respecting all Canadians, as is expected from all new Canadians when they take the oath to become a part of the Canadian family. As per the report on Global News she issued a statement to the media containing following text: “As a refugee in Quebec and Canada I have noticed the fast growth of Islamist groups loyal to the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Saudi clergy imposing the Burqa and enforcing Niqab on girls and women as political flags to mark jihadi territory.” and… “It is for this reason that on the first day as a Canadian I have raised the issue of banning the Burqa and Niqab in Ontario as I feel Premier Ford is a man who will listen to my plea and end the war by deception being waged by Islamists against Canadian values.” You can read the entire article and her statement here: https://globalnews.ca/news/4307779/raifbadawi-wife-ensaf-haidar-burqa-ban/ I find her sudden reincarnation from claiming to be a victim of persecution till the time of taking oath as a new Canadian to someone demanding persecution of Canadian Muslim women who wear niqab deeply troubling and malicious. The tone of her statement clearly indicates her dislike for the Canadian Muslim community. From the comment section of this article you can see for yourself the amount of hatred she generated for Muslims here in Canada. I feel that our organizations need to step up efforts to combat Islamophobia and victimization of Muslims here in Canada which from my own personal experience is on the rise. Unfortunately, despite the efforts that some of our organizations,
we are in a situation where it is easy to isolate and target members of our community with impunity with little or no repercussions. On top of that we have paid actors within our community who for their own self interest are willing to go to lengths to attempt to discredit victims of Islamophobic incidents or to stop them from speaking up. Unless we speak up more and make efforts to unify as a community we will unfortunately be resigned to be targeted because of our identity as a Muslim. I hope you will take a notice of this. Best Regards, Mohammad Yasser Khan

Nawaz says NAB court should delay verdict in Avenfield case till he returns to Pakistan
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said that the accountability court in Islamabad should delay announcing the verdict in the Avenfield properties referencetill the time he is able to return to the country. Talking to reporters in London, the ex-prime minister said he wants to hear the judgement of the case while standing in the courtroom where he “endured more than 100 hearings” with his daughter Maryam Nawaz. Sharif said Pakistan has had a history of verdicts remaining “unnecessarily” reserved for months, hence delaying the judgement of the Avenfield case for a few days “considering an extremely sensitive matter” would not violate any requi-
site of justice or law. “I want to hear this judgement while standing in the courtroom, amidst my people [and] holding them as witnesses,” he said, adding that his lawyer will submit a formal application in the court requesting it to delay the announcement of the verdict. Sharif said the mission he has taken up is not an easy one, but that he is ready to give any sacrifice for the sake of people’s right to rule and to honour their vote. “I am not a military dictator who would run away in fear,” the ousted prime minister said, adding that he will not disappoint the nation by showing any cowardice. “The people are going to announce the decision bigger than all decisions on July 25,” he said in a reference to the general elections scheduled for later this month. Sharif further said “those with the jeep [symbol]” — a reference to dissidents and other independents contesting on the jeep symbolagainst the PML-N — and others impeding the people’s rule “will become an example” after the poll. The former premier said he will “immediately” return to Pakistan as soon as his wife Kulsoom Nawaz’s health condition improves and will face the consequences whether the verdict comes out in his favour or not. He said he wishes to see his wife conscious and talk to her before returning to the country. Source: Dawn.com

NDMA sends out monsoon alert, expects more urban 604.505.5452 Off:604.503.6629 flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi # 25-8430-128th St, Surrey
Email:umer.realestatewell@gmail.com www.coldwellbanker.ca
The death toll from two days of heavy monsoon rains in upper parts of the country has risen to 15, officials said on Wednesday. The heaviest rains seen in Lahore since 1980 continued into Wednesday, flooding streets and causing some residents to join small demonstrations against local authorities. Rescue officials and police confirmed the death toll, saying most deaths were caused by electrocution and homes caving in. The city’s submerged stre¬ets and widespread power breakdowns exposed the lack of preparedness of civic departments to deal with the monsoon downpour. A large sinkhole has also appeared on the Mall Road near GPO Chowk. It has filled with rainwater and it is feared that
the water may affect the underground Orange Line Metro station nearby. The destruction has been caused by heavy downpours that dumped 177 mm of rainwater on the city over the past 24 hours. In light of the situation, the NDMA has also sent out a monsoon alert, warning that more rainfall is expected in the next 48 to 72 hours. According to the NDMA, there may be flooding in the River Ravi and areas connected to it. The alert has also said that there may be some urban flooding in Rawalpindi as well. Reactions to flooding According to DawnNewsTV, citizens are unable to leave their houses due to heavy flooding on streets and main roads. Irked citizens were quick to remind former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif about his claims that his government has turned Lahore into Paris. One user said: “Finally Shahbaz Sharif succeeded in making Lahore into a European city. But its Venice, not Paris.” Shahbaz Sharif, on the other hand, tweeted that he would be cancelling his meeting with the workers convention in Kasur due to “incessant rain” and that he hopes “that the caretaker administration is taking care of you in such torrential rains.” Source: Dawn.com

Rain has exposed development facade: Imran
LAHORE: Shahbaz Sharif does not face people because he knows how will people react to his development gimmickry, which now stands exposed, says PTI chief Imran Khan, who visited the inundated low-lying areas in the central part of the city. Standing in the rainwater at Lakshmi and GPO Chowk where he went to see
the situation, he said the first shower of the season had exposed the entire development narrative, which, the PTI has always maintained, was limited to newspapers and television advertisements only. “Shahbaz will now face people’s wrath if he comes out of his secure abodes,” Imran warned. Instead of true development, he only led money-making effort.
The development effort was limited to Jati Umra only, which might have become part of Paris but city certainly does not deserve that title, he told the media. Talking about the coming elections, he said people should take it a God-gifted opportunity to get rid of these “Pharaohs,” who did nothing but make money.

SC asks public to donate money for construction of Diamer-Bhasha, Mohmand dams
The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued directives that the construction of DiamerBhasha and Mohmand dams should start immediately, and appealed to the general public, including Pakistanis residing abroad, to donate for the cause. The apex court formed a committee under the chairmanship of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) chief to monitor the progress of construction and directed that an account be opened with the SC’s registrar in which all donations will be collected. It also said that all those donat-
ing for the cause will not be asked of their sources of income. Moreover, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar initiated the donation process by announcing Rs1 million donation for the cause during the hearing of the case pertaining to the construction of Kalabagh dam.“It was said that ‘even the Supreme Court’s father’ cannot construct dams,” the CJP noted, reminding the naysayers that the Constitution had given the court the power to make it happen. Justice Nisar hoped that “the passion that was seen during the 1965 war [with In-
dia] would be visible again for the construction of dams”.The four-member special bench, comprising Justice Umar Atta Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar, ordered the Wapda chairman-led committee to present a report after completing the formalities within three weeks.Earlier, court aide Mujeeb Pirzada said that only the benefits of Kalabagh dam were being described ignoring the fact that there were some serious demerits to its construction. Pirzada explained that the construction of
the dam would mean that the supply of water to other areas would be affected. He also claimed that the construction of Kalabagh dam would adversely impact sugarcane and rice production.“But dams are the nation’s need and we need to build them,” the CJP responded at Pirzada’s concerns about livelihoods of farmers being affected because of the dam.It noted that the country’s needs stand at 25 MAF of water and a new dam would be required every ten years after the construction of two new dams.

Israeli forces wound scores of women in Gaza rally
At least 134 Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli gunfire as thousands of Palestinian women demonstrated along the heavily fortified fence with Israel in the besieged Gaza Strip. Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesperson for Gaza’s healthy ministry, said in a statement on Tuesday that media representatives covering the event were among those who were injured at the scene, east of the enclave. The protest was the first mass women’s demonstration to take place in the strip since popular protests calling for Palestinians’ right of return began on March 30 in the strip. Palestinians in the strip have taken part in the protests, dubbed the Great March of Return, calling for their right of return to the homes from which they were expelled from in 1948 during a violent ethnic cleansing campaign that forcibly expelled more than 750,000 Palestinians from their towns and villages. They have also been demonstrating against the Israeli-Egyptian land, sea and naval blockade that has been in place

since 2006, when Hamas – the party governing the strip - came to power. Women on Tuesday arrived in buses from across the port city, home to more than two million people, many accompanied by their children. They moved in groups to within 50 metres of the fence, AFP reported. “I came to finish the march that my daughter had started,” Rim Abu Irmana said, waving a picture of her 15-year-old daughter, Wasal, who was killed by live Israeli ammunition on May 14 - the same day more than 60 other Palestinians were also killed. May 14, which commemorated the 70 years since the Nakba, coincided with the controversial US embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “These demonstrations are peaceful. We are only defending our land and our rights,” said Irmana, holding the hand of her young son. Since the protests began on March 30, Israeli forces killed at least 138 Palestinians. Saudi agrees to US request to pump more oil
Saudi Arabia’s cabinet on Tuesday endorsed the kingdom’s readiness to pump more oil to maintain market balance and stability, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said. “The kingdom is prepared to utilise its spare production capacity when necessary to deal with any future changes in the levels of supply and demand,” a cabinet statement said, following a meeting chaired by King Salman. US President Donald Trump on Saturday said Saudi Arabia’s King Salman had agreed to his request to increase oil output “maybe up to” two million barrels. Trump said the agreement was reached after a phone call with the Saudi King about oil production but mentioned no specifics. Both leaders also discussed “efforts by the oil-producing countries to compensate for any potential shortage in supplies,” SPA reported. Trump’s claim comes after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), a grouping of oil-producing states that includes Saudi Arabia, already agreed to ramp up production by a million barrels a day at a meeting earlier this month. Non-OPEC member Russia on June 23 also backed the
effort, capping a week of tense diplomacy for the bloc that averted a damaging rift between regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is the world’s top oil exporter and has usually kept at least 1.5 million to two million barrels per day of spare capacity, according to the US Energy Information Administration. It produces around 10 million barrels of crude per day, according to OPEC. The Trump administration is pushing countries to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November when the United States re-imposes sanctions against Tehran after Trump withdrew from a 2015 nuclear deal agreed between Iran and six major powers. US officials are pressing allies in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, to adhere to the sanctions, which are aimed at pressuring Iran to negotiate a new agreement to halt its nuclear programmes. Iran’s OPEC governor, Hossein Kazempour Ardebili, accused the US and Saudi Arabia of trying to push up oil prices and said both countries are acting against the foundation of OPEC. Source: Al-Jazeera

Demonstrators denounce move to separate more than 2,000 children from parents Activists, parents and first-time protesters motivated by accounts of children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border are rallying in cities and towns across North America today to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies, calling for an end to the detention of immigrant families. More than 700 planned marches drew hundreds of thousands of people across the country, from immigrantfriendly cities like New York and Los Angeles to conservative Appalachia and Indiana to the front lawn of a Border Patrol station in McAllen, Texas, near a detention centre where migrant children were being held in cages. There, people held American and Texas flags and signs depicting a migrant father, mother and child as the Holy Family with haloed heads travelling through the desert. Thousands dressed in white and gathered on Lafayette Square in Washington, across from the White House, with crowds chanting “Shame! Shame! Shame!” as speakers denounced the separation of children from their parents after they cross the U.S. border. Protesters waved signs in English and Spanish, bearing slogans like “Where are the children?” and “Melania & Ivanka, stop the child abuse.” “The way they treat families, the way they treat immigrants — that’s not America,” protester Aneice Germain said of Donald Trump’s tough stance on immigration, a cornerstone of his 2016 election campaign and his presidency. Trump says illegal immigration fosters crime and he implemented a “zero tolerance” policy in May to prosecute all immigrants apprehended for entering illegally. That led to the separation of more than 2,000 children from their parents, causing an outcry this month, even from some allies of the Republican president. In a rare retreat on an issue that fires up his conservative base, Trump on June 20 ordered officials to detain families together. A federal judge has ordered families be reunited and the administration asked the military to house immigrant families, leading the Pentagon to mull the construction of
soft-sided camp facilities. ‘What if it was your child?’ At the march in New York City, protesters chanted and sang as they gathered in sweltering heat at a Manhattan park before heading across the Brooklyn Bridge. “It’s important for this administration to know that these policies that rip apart families — that treat people as less than human, like they’re vermin — are not the way of God, they are not the law of love,” said the Rev. Julie Hoplamazian, an Episcopal priest marching in Brooklyn, whose own grandparents fled to the U.S. during the Armenian genocide. “Jesus was a refugee,” she said. The protests drew several big names, including in L.A., where the assembled crowd was treated to a performance by singer John Legend. Some in the crowd spoke about how U.S. immigration policy has affected their own families. Smaller groups came together in city parks and downtown squares in every state, and photos quickly started ricocheting around social media. Some carried tiny white onesies. “What if it was your child?” was written on one. “No family jails,” said another. Among the targets of their censure: Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the agencies Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection. Protesters were due to march on the Justice Department building in Washington later in the afternoon. Crowds also gathered in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, with protesters voicing concerns about everything from abortion rights and the future makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court, to what, if any, influence Russia might have on American politics. Canadian tariffs on U.S. goods now in effect
Ben Cousins, CTVNews.ca Staff Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American goods officially kicked in Sunday, marking a new milestone in the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries. The list of $16.6 billion worth of tariffs on U.S. goods includes a 25 per cent surtax on more than 100 steel and aluminum products and at 10 per cent surtax on more than 70 other goods, including chocolate, pizza and maple syrup, to name a few. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is skipping the Canada Day party on Parliament Hill and will instead be making two stops in towns at the forefront of the burgeoning trade dispute: a steel refinery in Regina, and a food processing plant in Leamington, Ont. In his Canada Day message, Trudeau paid tribute to the workingclass Canadians who will be impacted by Canada-U.S. tariffs. “Canada’s workers build the roads and bridges that get us to work on time and back home again,” Trudeau stated in his address. “From Ontario steel to Quebec aluminum, from agriculture and the energy sector in the Prairies and the North, to forestry in
British Columbia and fisheries in the Atlantic, Canadians get the job done - and build our communities along the way.” The tariffs are an equal response to 25 per cent steel tariffs and 10 per cent aluminum tariffs that the U.S. government instituted on June 1. They will remain in place until the U.S. tariffs are lifted. Jerry Dias, Unifor’s national president, called Canada’s retaliatory tariffs a “necessary evil.” “Donald Trump has declared war on Canada and we have absolutely no choice but to retaliate,” he told CTV News Channel. “Corporations, as well as our members, don’t know what the next move is because we’re convinced that Donald Trump doesn’t know what his next move is either.” Ken Neumann, national director of United Steelworkers Canada, said the tariffs are a step in the “right direction.” “It shows the U.S. government that we’re not going to be pushed back,” he said. “We’ve got nothing to be ashamed about.” The Canadian tariffs are expected to hit industries in many of the swing states that are crucial for Republicans in the midterm
Trudeau fined $100 for not disclosing gift of sunglasses from PEI premier
By: Teresa Wright, Ottawa Prime Minister Justin Trudeau removes his sunglasses as he arrives in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Thursday November 9, 2017. Housing affordability reaches crisis level Ex-PM Najib Razak charged in 1MBD corruption scandal in Vancouver: RBC report
Housing affordability in Greater Vancouver reached a “crisis level” in the first quarter, with additional interest rate hikes expected to take another bite out of Canadian housing affordability in the months to come, says an RBC report The share of household income required to cover mortgage payments, property taxes and utilities in the Greater Vancouver Area reached a record high of 87.8 per cent in the first quarter, rising 1.5 percentage points from the fourth quarter and up 9.5 per cent from the prior year. “And things could get worse if -- or when -- interest rates rise further,” said the report by RBC chief economist Craig Wright and senior economist Robert Hogue. A cooling in the market may take pressure off prices but it’s unlikely to ease affordability tensions, they wrote. The cost of home ownership in Victoria was also high at 62.7 per cent, up from 48 per cent in mid-2015. The Bank of Canada is expected to increase its overnight rate by one percentage point to 2.25 per cent by the first half of 2019. Growing household income and cooler housing markets in some areas should provide some limited offset. Nationally, the proportion of income required to pay home ownership costs rose 0.4 percentage points from the fourth quarter to 48.4 per cent. The move reversed a 0.3 percentage point drop in the fourth quarter. “Well, the winning streak for housing affordability in Canada ended ... at just one quarter!” said the report. Mortgage rates increased in the previous two quarters, but a drop in home prices -- mainly in the Greater Toronto Area -- trimmed ownership costs modestly. The Greater Toronto Area saw affordability improve slightly to 74.2 per cent as a dip in home prices counteracted higher interest rates. The mortgage stress test that came into effect in January added downward pressure on property values that were still adjusting to new measures in Ontario including a 15 per cent foreign buyer tax and the expansion of rent controls to all private rental units. RBC
said home prices in and around the country’s largest city should move slightly higher in the near term after declining modestly in the past two quarters. Saskatoon, Ottawa, Halifax and St. John’s, N.L., saw the largest declines in affordability in more than a year, but housing costs remained low at between 27 and 36.6 per cent. “This shouldn’t raise too many concerns at this stage because the level of the measure for each of these markets remains close to its historical average -- indicating that any affordability-related stress isn’t abnormally high,” said the report. However, stress may be building in the Greater Montreal Area, which saw costs reach their highest point since 2011 at 43.7 per cent. “Montreal’s housing market continues to show all-round, solid momentum and steadily rising prices in the early part of 2018,” RBC said. “The flipside, though, is that it’s becoming less and less affordable to own a home in the area.” Ownership costs rose slightly in Saint John in the first quarter, but the New Brunswick city was the most affordable of those tracked by RBC at 25.9 per cent. Halifax affordability was resilient at 32.7 per cent, with a 1.2 per cent decrease in resales in the first quarter, compared to 13 per cent drop nationally. Housing remains inexpensive outside Canada’s three hottest housing markets -- Vancouver, Toronto and Victoria, said a separate report from the Bank of Montreal. In most cities, property costs are less than four-times family income while mortgage payments consume less than 20 per cent of salaries, which is little changed from the mid-2000s. “Borrowing five-year money costs little more today than five years ago and remains well below historic norms,” said BMO senior economist Sal Guatieri. “Government intensification policies that restrict the supply of ground-related units, low joblessness and well-paying, high-tech jobs are also cushioning prices.” Source: CTV News
PA: Israel’s freeze of prisoner family money ‘declaration of war’
Palestinian leaders have condemned a “dangerous” new Israeli law that will withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in funds from the Palestinian Authority (PA) over welfare payments given to prisoners and their families. Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for PA President Mahmoud Abbas, said in a statement on Tuesday that the move constituted a “declaration of war” against the Palestinian people who have fought for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He also said the move, which surpasses a “red line”, was going to be confronted with a series of Palestinian decisions. “All options are open … from the International Criminal Court to the United Nations Security Council,” he warned. Similarly, Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation committee, said the move amounted to “theft”. “This is a very dangerous decision that amounts to the cancellation of the Palestinian Authority and is piracy and theft,” Erekat told AFP. “Israel is stealing the land and money of the Palestinian people, and that is a result of the decisions of US President Donald Trump, who supports Israel.” The decision - passed by the Israeli government on Monday evening with 87 of 120 legislators voting in favour and 15 opposing - will deduct money that the Palestinians allocate to the families of
prisoners and others killed by Israeli forces from taxes collected by Israel on behalf of the PA. Palestinians with Israeli citizenship rallied against the bill ahead of the vote. Jamal Zahalka, of the Joint List of Arab parties, said on Monday the bill was “despicable”. “You are stealing from the Palestinian people,” Zahalka said. The Israeli move deepened a budget crunch already hit hard by US cuts in aid. The cash-strapped PA, which relies heavily on Israeli tax funds and international aid, has suffered from chronic budget problems for years. Israel has long pushed for the Palestinians to halt the stipends - which benefit roughly 35,000 families of Palestinians killed and wounded in the conflict with Israel - saying the practice encourages violence. Among the beneficiaries are families of Palestinian prisoners and others who were killed by Israeli occupation forces. The stipends total approximately $330m, roughly seven percent of the Palestinian Authority’s $5bn budget in 2018. Palestinians say the tax revenues, collected by Israel for them under past peace agreements, is their money, and that the PA has a responsibility to all of its citizens like any other government. For Palestinians, the families are widely seen as victims of decades of Israeli occupation.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has denied corruption charges over the disappearance of millions of dollars from the 1MBD state investment fund, as part of a graft probe while he was in office. A day after his arrest, the Malaysian High Court in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday charged Najib with abuse of power and three counts of criminal breach of trust for allegedly depositing 42m ringgit ($10m) in state funds to his personal bank account between December 2014 and February 2015. “I claim trial,” he said in court on Tuesday before being granted bail at 1 million ringgit ($250,000) in cash. The charges relate to funds that were allegedly transferred from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MBD) into Najib’s personal account. If convicted, each of the four charges could see the former prime minister jailed for up to 20 years. Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi, reporting from the capital, Kuala Lumpur, said: “The sum of about $10m is a small amount compared to the $4bn that Najib and his associate are alleged to have embezzled from 1MBD.” Najib, who says the legal action against him is politically motivated, was arrested by anticorruption investigators on Tuesday. Earlier on Tuesday, Malaysia’s anti-corruption agency questioned Riza Aziz, the stepson of Najib and a Hollywood film producer. The
1MBD investigation has been several years in the making with allegation over misappropriation first emerging in 2015. Public anger over alleged corruption at the 1MDB fund, which was set up in 2009, helped bring on the shock defeat of Najib’s coalition in the May 9 polls. The new government - a coalition of opposition parties headed by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad - reopened investigations that were stifled while Najib was in office and set up a special task force. “This new government has made it its top priority to prosecute people involved in the white collar crimes involving 1MBD as well as recovering the stolen funds,” said Al Jazeera’s Looi. In 2015, it emerged that $4bn had gone missing from the 1MBD sovereign wealth fund, and nearly $700m was allegedly transferred into Najib’s bank account. The US state department filed a case in 2016, seeking to seize more than $1bn in assets linked to the fund. Najib denied any wrongdoing and said the money was a donation from the Saudi royal family, which he had since returned. So far, police have questioned others politicians as well as Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansour and his step son, Riza Aziz. Malaysian authorities have also frozen hundreds of bank accounts believed to be linked to 1MBD. Source: Al-Jazeera
Ambulance service says it’s reached its limit, asks people with mild symptoms to seek help elsewhere Officials in Montreal and the Eastern Townships are urging people to check on their neighbours and loved ones, especially those without access to air conditioning, as the heat wave gripping the regions peaks and is being blamed for 18 deaths. The toll of heat-related deaths in the province rose by eight in total between Tuesday and Wednesday. Twelve have been confirmed in the Montreal area, five in the Eastern Townships and one in Laval. The wave started last Friday and is the worst to hit Quebec in decades..” Mayor asks for public’s help Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said at a news conference that, “we’re doing everything we can.” She pointed to the city’s response, which includes opening swimming pools and air-conditioned areas to the public, distributing water to those in need and having first responders checking in on vulnerable citizens. Plante said 15,000 people were visited by firefighters and police yesterday to make sure they could cope with the heat. She also called on the public for help responding to the heatwave. “I’m counting on Montrealers to knock on doors, maybe of a neighbour, just to find
out if the person is OK. It’s a team effort,” Plante said. Check on the elderly “Think about your neighbours; think about your family members, grandpa, grandma; think about your kids, your friends,” said Mélissa Généreux, the director of public health in the Eastern Townships. “Why not give them a call, a visit, take them out of the house … a bit of cool air could do some good and save lives.” Généreux and David Kaiser, of Montreal’s public health department, have said those who died in both regions didn’t have air conditioning in their homes and had health issues. Speaking on CBC’s The Current, Kaiser said temperatures recorded by paramedics in these cases reached the high 30s inside the victims’ apartments. “What we know about why heat kills people is that people with underlying medical problems are more vulnerable to accumulating heat,” Kaiser said. “So, after a couple days of being hot and living in a place with no air conditioning, the heat just overwhelms the body’s capacity to adapt.” Kaiser said city workers are knocking on doors to identify people in similar situations and get them medical help, or to a cooling shelter. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah said: Allah said: Sons of Adam inveigh against [the vicissitudes of] Time, and I am Time, in My hand is the night and the day (1). (1) As the Almighty is the Ordainer of all things, to inveigh against misfortunes that are part of Time is tantamount to inveighing against Him. It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim).
Shawwal Fasting: Importance of Fasting Six days after Ramadan (Still 8 days left)
Written By: IslamicFinder
Six day fast of the month of Shawwal will complement the deficiencies and disabilities found during the fasting month of Ramadan.
H
oly Month of Ramadan, has passed. Besides educating us, it provides an opportunity for us to win double rewards as well as to increase faith and belief in Allah. In the month of Ramadan, we usually take the opportunity to practice Sunnah (the way of the prophet Muhammad S.A.W.) such as Tarawih, Witir prayers, read the Quran, to give charity and so on to get maximum rewards from Allah. We should ask ourselves “are we continuing these practices in the months after Ramadan?” The celebration of the month of Ramadan does not mean that the end of what we have worshiped and done good deeds during the glorious month, but more importantly its continuity in the coming month throughout the whole year. Fasting for six days during Shawwal is a Sunnah and is not Fardh (obligatory). However, the virtues and the advantages of these six fasts are very large and special. Permanent Reward for the whole year: Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) promises forgiveness of past sins whoever fast during the whole month of Ramadan. After Ramadan, completing a six-day fast in the month of Shawwal is the same as fasting a whole

n Islam, Muslim doctrine is often summarized in “Six Articles of Faith.” These are the fundamental beliefs which every Muslim must ascribe to: 1. One God (Allah) The central belief in Islam, and arguably the most important theme of Islam, is that there is one God. The Muslim name for God is “Allah,” which is Arabic for “the (al) God (Ilah).” 2. The angels of God Angels in Islam are spiritual creatures that serve the purposes of Allah. They are messengers who relay communication to people and carry out other responsibilities. Angels, such as Gabriel (thought to be the same Gabriel as the one read about in the Christian New Testament), is mentioned in the Quran. Angels are often found in Islam art, revealing their importance to the Islamic worldview.
year. As narrated by Abu Ayyub (R.A.), Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six from Shawwal, then that is (equal in reward) to fasting every day.” (Tirmidhi 759) Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) explains that the fast of six days in the month of Shawwal, the reward is just like a full year of fasting with one condition, we have completed fasting a month of Ramadan. Complete Ramadan Fasting Shortage: Six-day fast of the month of Shawwal will complement the deficiencies and disabilities found during the fasting month of Ramadan. Imam Nawawi, think that a person who has completed Ramadan fast should continue his fast (six days of Shawwal) immediately and consecutively after celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr i-e from 2nd Shawwal onwards. However, Fasting can be done on any day, throughout the month of Shawwal, either continuously or alternately. The opportunity to follow the Prophet’s
(S.A.W.) Sunnah: As mentioned above, fasting during Shawwal is Sunnah and not Fardh but we should not forget about the following Hadith. As Narrated by Anas bin Malik, “The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said to me: ‘Whoever revives my Sunnah then he has loved me. And whoever loved me, he shall be with me in Paradise.’” (Tirmidhi 2678) According to the hadith, we will be reviving one of our Prophet’s (S.A.W), by observing the fast for six days during Shawwal. So the reward from Allah will be unlimited and we will be with our beloved Prophet (S.A.W.) in paradise, our ultimate goal/destination. Here are some health benefits for fasting: - Fasting purifies the blood inside the cells of the body and helps balance the body fluids, and gives the human energy and activity, and strengthens the immunity. - Fasting saves the person from toxins and body waste and helps his body to remain healthy

3. The books of God, especially the Qur’an The Quran is the most important writing in the religion of Islam and is the highest authority in both religious and legal matters. The word “Quran” means “recitation” in Arabic. Muslims believe the Quran to be an errorless record of the angel Gabriel’s revelations to Muhammad, from 610 until his death in 632 AD. It is also believed to be

a perfect copy of a Quran that has existed eternally in paradise. 4. The prophets of God, especially Muhammad Muhammad is the most important historical and theological figure in Islam. His name, which means “highly praised,” reflects this. Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 AD. His father died before he was

and fit. - One of the greatest benefits of fasting is that it generates enough white pellets to protect the human body from diseases. Scientific research has confirmed that fasting one day generates white pellets sufficient to protect the body for 10 days. If we combine fasting for the whole month of Ramadan with fasting 6 days of Shawwal, The body’s production of white cells will cover 360 days, which is sufficient to protect the body during the whole year - Fasting these days helps to move the body from Ramadan diet system to the normal diet in a healthy way and avoid the problems of digestion. During the holy month of Ramadan, the body is accustomed to eating two meals a day (Sehr & Iftar). The transition to food, which consists of three to four meals, causes some digestive disorders. - Fasting these days helps you to remove the abdominal puff significantly, and gives the body a great opportunity to burn sugar and fat, which was heavily eaten during the days of Eid-ul-Fitr, and helps control the quality of food that you get. Note: Remember that we should observe fast for the sole purpose to please Allah and not to gain these health benefits as Niyya (intention) for each and every good deed should be to get reward from Allah and Allah only. May Allah accepts all your good deeds and reward you with Jannah (Paradise) on the Day of Judgment.
born and his mother died when he was sixyears-old. Muhammad was then raised primarily by his uncle, for whom he worked as a shepherd. 5. The Day of Judgment (or the afterlife) The afterlife is very important to the Islamic worldview. Muslims believe in the continued existence of the soul and a transformed physical existence after death. Islam teaches that there will be a day of judgment when all humans will be divided between the eternal destinations of Paradise and Hell. 6. The supremacy of God’s will (or predestination) Islam teaches that God not only foreknows, but also foreordains all that comes to pass in the world and in the lives of individuals. South Fraser Government Caucus MLA’s invite Muslim Community at Eid Milan Party
On June 26th, South Fraser Government Caucus MLA’s Hon. Minister Bruce Ralston, Hon. Minister Harry Bains, MLA Jagrup Brar, MLA Raj Chouhan, MLA Ravi Kahlon, MLA Rachna Singh and MLA Garry Begg hosted a Eid ul Fitr celebration at Bombay Banquet Hall Surrey.
Hundreds of Muslim community members joined at their invitation after BC NDP became in power. Program started by the Holy Quran recitation and both MCs did a good job in very short time. From Muslim Food Bank a representative thanked the Hosts and brief the MFB activities in community.
After a long time, the people enjoyed any event without any speeches at stage but they discussed many issues individually with their constituency MLA. This is very good sign to meet their MLAs and make bridges among them and show your strength in BC Politics. A heavy delicious refreshment was served.
Miracle Media got the opportunity to made video interviewed with all hosts MLAs and discussed about BC Caucus one-year progress and next 3 years plan for the BC residents. (You can see those videos interviews at our website: www.miraclenews.com.

Surrey, B.C. – Tackling gang violence in Surrey was the priority at today’s release of the report on the Mayor’s Task Force on Gang Violence Prevention. Over 100 partners and guests gathered to hear about the action steps the City of Surrey is taking to prevent gang violence. In addition to recommending enhanced police enforcement, an expanded gang exiting program and the launch of an Inadmissible Patrons Program, the Task Force is responding to the identified need for enhanced early interventions and stronger neighbourhoodbased, culturally appropriate prevention
programs. The Mayor highlighted that while the City will continue to show leadership on these issues, coordinated action and funding from the federal and provincial governments is essential. “Partnerships are key when addressing complex public safety issues and I commend the City for drawing people together,” said Gordie Hogg, Member of Parliament for South Surrey–White Rock. “The Federal Government is committed to supporting Surrey in their efforts to help stop the gang violence that is occurring in B.C. communities.”
“I’d like to thank the City of Surrey and the Mayors Task Force for their important work toward preventing gun and gang violence and improving the quality of life for citizens in British Columbia,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “We’re proud to support their work and we’re committed to ensuring we provide the resources necessary to enable early interventions for our youth and support for those who seek to exit the gang lifestyle. Our government will continue to target gun and gang violence head-on and work with police agencies, anti-gang units
youth are knowledgeable and resilient, and that police have the tools and structure they need to prevent crime and disrupt organized crime groups.” “I’m extremely proud of how the Task Force members came together from across our community to systematically address this important issue and that our Federal and Provincial partners also see the value in this work,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “What really surprised me as we conducted this review is how young children are when they begin to get involved in gangs. It is critical that we support our young people early to reduce the chances of them getting involved in the gang lifestyle.” In October 2017, Mayor Linda Hepner launched the Mayor’s Task Force on Gang Violence Prevention. The Task Force brought together 23 community partners with representatives from the provincial government, law enforcement, business community, school district, social service agencies, citizens and local media.

‘I don’t remember any negative interactions,’ Trudeau says of 18-year-old groping allegation 2000 newspaper editorial, before political career, accuses him of ‘inappropriately handling’ female reporter. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has directly addressed allegations of “groping” a reporter at an event 18 years ago before he was involved in politics, saying he does not recall any “negative interactions” that day. During a stop in Regina on Sunday, the prime minister was asked about an allegation dating back to 2000, when a 28-year-old Trudeau, then a teacher, was visiting a music festival in Creston, B.C. The incident is alleged to have taken place at the Kokanee Summit, where money was being raised for the Avalanche Foundation, a charity Trudeau became involved with after his brother, Michel, died in an avalanche in 1998. An unsigned editorial appeared in the Creston Valley Advance after the event accusing Trudeau of “groping” and “inappropriately handling” a young female reporter while she was on assignment. It suggests the woman felt “blatantly disrespected” but provides no other details about what occurred. “I remember that day in Creston well,” Trudeau told reporters Sunday. “I had a good day that day; I don’t remember any negative interactions that day at all.” The prime minister made the comments while visiting supporters and steel workers in Regina as part of a three-city Canada Day tour. Colleagues recall woman’s account Earlier this year, CBC News spoke by phone and emailed with the woman who was the
subject of the editorial. She said she was not interested in being associated with any further coverage of the story. She also asked that her name not be used and that she not be contacted about the story again. A former co-worker remembers the reporter’s account of the encounter. Valerie Bourne was the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance at the time and says the reporter was “distressed” by her contact with Trudeau. “My recollections of the conversation were that she came to me because she was unsettled by it. She didn’t like what had happened. She wasn’t sure how she should proceed with it because of course we’re talking somebody who was known to the Canadian community.” There’s no question in my mind that what was alluded to, written about in that editorial, did happen. - Brian Bell, Creston Valley Advance editor Bourne told CBC News that the reporter was interviewing Trudeau when he touched her. “It was a brief touch,” said Bourne. “I would not classify it or qualify it as sexual assault.” The paper’s editor at the time, Brian Bell, also spoke to CBC News. “I don’t recall that the reporter was coming across as having been traumatized or distraught about it, but definitely that, whatever physical touch or whatever had occurred in that moment was definitely not welcome and definitely inappropriate. “I certainly believe that it happened, this reporter was of a high character in my opinion
and was professional in the way she conducted herself and there’s no question in my mind that what was alluded to, written about in that editorial, did happen.” Bourne believes the editorial was written by the reporter herself. Both Bourne and Bell say they did not write the editorial and that it must have been one of the two reporters on staff. The second reporter, Paul Frey, told The National Post that he didn’t know anything about it. ‘I’ve been very, very careful all my life’ The editorial suggested that the day after the incident Trudeau offered an apology of sorts: “I’m sorry,” he is quoted as saying. “If I had known you were reporting for a national paper I never would have been so forward.” The account stands in contrast to Trudeau’s own comments about his past. In an interview with CBC Radio’s The House in January, host Chris Hall asked Trudeau about the topic of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Specifically, Hall asked if there was a chance that at some point some
Trudeau’s own actions might have been misconstrued. “I don’t think so,” Trudeau responded. “I’ve been very, very careful all my life to be thoughtful, to be respectful of people’s space and people’s headspace as well,” Trudeau said in the interview. That interview came as Trudeau was dealing with allegations of harassment by one of his ministers. He was asked if he held himself to the same standard he holds his own caucus members to. “There is no context in which someone doesn’t have responsibility for things they’ve done in the past.” By: CBC News

In February 2018, the U.S. military budget was increased to a record $700 billion. The U.S. has led a new era of war and occupation which began with the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan in 2001, and has continued with the wars and occupations against Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Palestine. In addition to outright military interventions, the U.S. has threatened and sanctioned Iran, North Korea and Venezuela. How much more death and destruction does the U.S. government have in store for oppressed nations around the world with even more funding for their war drive? The U.S. is also continuing to fund the over 70-year continued Zionist Israeli occupation of Palestine with a staggering $38 billion over 10 years in military “aid.” Most recently, in the one month following the March 30 Palestinian demonstration and peaceful protest campaign, the Israeli Defense Forces massacred 111 Palestinians and injured more than 12,733 who were demanding their basic human rights and selfdetermination. Alongside the U.S., the government of Canada also has a role in these wars and occupations. Since 2015, Canada has approved more than $284 million in exports of Ca-
nadian weapons and military goods to the countries bombing Yemen, most of which has gone to Saudi Arabia. This is in addition to Canada’s $15 billion arms deal to supply Saudi Arabia with so-called “light” armoured military vehicles. With the backing of Canada and the U.S, Saudi Arabia has been at war again Yemen for the past three years, and destroyed the country with an indiscriminate bombing campaign and a crippling air, sea and land blockade that has prevented aid from reaching what the United Nations calls “the worst man-made humanitarian crisis of our time.” Here in Vancouver, Canada, Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) is out on the streets in protest every month, demanding an end to the new era of war and occupation. On June 15th, antiwar activists and peace-loving people came together in downtown Vancouver and made an impression on anyone walking by with an information table, picket signs and large banners reading “Don’t Attack Syria! U.S. Out of Syria and the Middle East!” “U.S./Saudi Arabia Hands Off Yemen!” and “Self-Determination for Palestine!” People walking by stopped at the info table to talk with organizers and collect antiwar literature, and

After Erdogan’s win, what’s next for Turkey’s foreign policy? By: Semih Idiz Turkey’s relations with the West have never been as tense and turbulent as under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In addition, few governments in the Middle East appear to be enamored with Ankara’s interference in the region’s affairs. Following Erdogan’s recent electoral victory, however, it is ties with the West that will determine much, especially now that Erdogan is effectively Turkey’s sole ruler following implementation of constitutional amendments adopted in 2017. Erdogan’s election victory also shows that his abrasive and offensive tone in conducting relations with the West has the support of a significant number of Turks in Turkey and abroad. This has led many to assume that Ankara’s foreign policy orientation under Erdogan’s executive presidency will amount to more of the same. That might be the case, but the underlying philosophy will, however, be different. Turkey’s policy had previously been based on the idealistic notion of “zero problems with neighbors,” formulated by Ahmet Davutoglu, the now discredited former prime minister. After replacing Davutoglu in July 2016, Binali Yildirim rehashed this approach, asserting that he would work to “increase the number of Turkey’s friends and reduce the number of its enemies.” Both Davutoglu and Yildirim’s formulations were not original, of course, being no more than derivatives of the “peace at home, peace abroad” dictum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Turkish Republic.
Their formulations failed to produce the desired effects, as Turkey’s problems with its neighbors increased and the number of its friends fell sharply, due mainly to Erdogan’s singular and harsh approach to international relations. Erdogan’s electoral manifesto, presented in May, made it clear that he would abandon the idealistic notions expounded by Davutoglu and Yildirim if elected Turkey’s first executive president. His foreign policy, Erdogan indicated, would be based on realism driven by his understanding of the global situation and built essentially on the understanding that “the world is no longer the unipolar world of the 1990s.” Also grounding this approach is the understanding that Turkey’s vital national security concerns trump all other considerations because of the “reactionary and exclusionary actions of states.” In short, Erdogan’s foreign policy vision is based on the idea of building a militarily strong Turkey that can stand up to its enemies and protect itself against all external threats while also becoming the key power in its region. In this regard, Erdogan points to Operation

Working a Little Longer Can Make a Big Difference Post-Retirement
The longer you keep working, the better off you’ll be when you decide to retire By Katrina Caruso
Will you have enough money saved to retire on?
A
s we reported on goodtimes.ca in February, 62% of Canadians aged 55 to 75 worry that they’ll outlive their savings, according to an Ipsos survey conducted for RBC Insurance. Almost half—45%—of those not yet retired aren’t sure they’ll be able to afford the retirement they hope for. In the United States, half of all households are in danger of not having enough money saved to maintain their standard of living in retirement, according to the Centre for Retirement Research at Boston College. What can you do to ensure that you have as much saved as possible? According to a paper recently released by the US National Bureau of Economic Research, working a little longer—even a few extra months—can make big difference. Researchers looked at number of scenarios and applied different assumptions—such as varying income levels and rates of return on investment—and consistently found that working longer was the best option. Their results showed that working only three to six additional months past 65 can produce the
(Khatna/Khitan) same outcome as if you had saved 1% of your annual salary over 30 years. By working longer, not only are you continuing to earn money—and thereby both saving more and postponing having to touch your savings—but you can also put off starting to receive your government retirement benefits. For every month beyond 65 that you don’t claim Canada (or Quebec) Pension Plan benefits (and keep paying premiums), your benefit goes up .7%, or 8.4% a year. If you wait till you’re 70, you’ll get 42% more than you would at 65. Old Age Security benefits also increase as you postpone retirement—rising .6% a month, or 7.2% a year. The Social Security system in the United States also rewards those who defer retirement. To learn more on the similarities and differences in the two retirement plans, check out this article. 4 lifestyle changes to make you more productive
By: Marguerite Ward
B
etween working toward your career goals and planning for your financial goals, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But if you want to be more productive in 2018, you’ll need to find ways to remain calm and focused. A few simple changes incorporating the practices of some of the biggest names in business can help you turn things around and get ahead. Here are four lifestyle changes that could help you become more successful in the new year:
1. Build a daily routine that inspires you
Tony Robbins, bestselling author and speaker, has helped many, including tennis champion Serena Williams and actor Hugh Jackman, feel more focused in their careers. One of his favorite fear-reducing tactics, which he uses with clients and in his own life, is a strategy called priming. The process involves conditioning yourself to react to events in a certain way. “If you’re going to get the results that you deserve and that you want, you want to prime yourself for success,” he said at an event in July. “You need a daily practice, a daily practice that’s going to put you in the best state possible regularly.” To help prime yourself for feeling strong, Robbins recommends two steps: First, he told CNBC Make It, set aside 10
minutes each morning for reflection and mindful breathing, a process that helps him stay focused and motivated every day. Spend the first three minutes thinking about three things you’re grateful for. Spend the next three minutes feeling at peace and thinking of people you care about. Finally, spend three minutes envisioning three things you want to accomplish. Next, he suggests listening to an inspiring audio book or podcast while you commute, do household tasks or exercise. “Prime yourself for courage,” he said, “rather than hoping you show up that way, based on the triggers of your environment.”
2. Start carrying a book
Think about how many times a day you reach for your phone when you’re bored or have down time. If you picked up a book instead, you could be benefiting more by learning about something new, reading something inspiring or simply relaxing with a fun novel. Charlie Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and business partner to legendary investor Warren Buffett, credits much of his success to a habit he and Buffett share — reading. He says young people should spend less time on their phones and more time buried in
books. “In my whole life, I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time — none, zero,” says Munger, according to David Clark, author of “The Tao of Charlie Munger.” Scientific research supports Munger’s advice to read more. Several studies have found that people who read show higher levels of empathy and emotional intelligence and are more likely to stay mentally sharp.
3. Exercise for 20 minutes a day One of the best ways to feel more relaxed and focused is to get active.
Even just 20 minutes of working out — which is less than the time you probably spend watching an episode of your favorite Netflix show — has been shown to boost a person’s physical and mental health. In fact, people who exercise vigorously for 150 minutes each week, or about 20 minutes each day, sleep significantly better than those who don’t, according to a study of more than 2,500 people. Billionaire Richard Branson says he is twice as productive on days when he exercises. That’s why he tries to start each day at 5 a.m. on the right note, by exercising. He’s an avid runner and cyclist. “[Keeping fit] keeps the brain functioning well,” Branson said in an interview with Four YourBodyPress.
4. Set up a sleep routine
If you have trouble falling asleep, it might be because you don’t have a proper sleep routine, according to Dr. Philip Gehrman, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. “Most people need a good hour of winding down down time before they’re just physically and mentally ready to go bed,” Gehrman told CNBC Make It earlier this year. Avoid eating directly before bed because it can cause acid reflux and make you feel uncomfortable, he says. Give yourself time to digest. And while having a glass of wine before bed may seem to make you tired, alcohol leads to disrupted sleep. Instead, set up a relaxation routine. Yoga, meditation, coloring or progressive muscle relaxation are all techniques experts recommend. Avoid activities that get you excited, like watching the news or an action-packed TV show. And, as media mogulArianna Huffington recommends, keep your iPhone away from your bed. Huffington recently told CNBC Make It that feeling constantly exhausted is one of the easiest ways to derail your own career. Making sleep a priority, she says, will help you be much more productive. “For me, it’s just a question of building the foundation,” she says, “and then I find it much easier to get a lot more done and do it without this constant sense of pressure.”

Your Qualities & Strengths
By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
I
w o men
t can be easy to appreciate your strengths - your sense of humor, your generosity, or your analytical skills. And it is also easy to get down on yourself for having various personality traits you perceive as weaknesses maybe you are quick to anger or always running late. Instead of getting down on yourself for your weaknesses try instead to reframe them as something positive - as traits that make you uniquely you. •Make a list of all your strengths. Include the big ones that are huge components of your personality, like your patience, all the way down to the small things you are good at. See how many great qualities you contribute to the world! •Now make a list of all your weaknesses. Write down things you don’t like about your personality or you feel are negative traits. •Look at your list of weaknesses. Think about ways you could see those weaknesses as positives. For example, say one of your weaknesses is that you think you talk too much. You could reframe this to a positive as, “It’s easy for me to express my opinion.” “I’m too sensitive” could be reframed as, “I have empathy for others.” Stay true to yourself. To appreciate and accept yourself, it is important to know who you are. It may be helpful to identify your personal values. Knowing what is important to you and making decisions based on your personal values helps you be authentic and appreciate your true self. Make sure your values are your own and you are not simply taking on the values of your friends or family. Figure out what is important to you. •Explore which values are important to you and write them down. A concrete list of your values may help you recognize when you are being inauthentic to yourself and your values.
•You may feel like other people may not like you if they see the “real” you. It may be helpful for you to explore these feelings with someone you trust or by writing in a journal. Determine when you feel most yourself and when you feel the need to pretend to be someone else, and explore the differences between those situations. •If you feel you cannot be yourself around certain friends or family, perhaps because you fear being made fun of, then it may be a sign that you fear rejection about revealing your true self. •The first step to changing your behavior is noticing when you do it. Pay attention and later, spend some time reflecting on what triggered your behavior in a particular situation. It may take a while for you to feel comfortable enough to be your authentic self around other people. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t do it right away. Avoid comparisons. Comparing yourself to others can leave you feeling discouraged and judgmental. Remember, you generally see only a piece of others’ everyday lives (particularly on social media). Comparing yourself to someone will only set you up for disappointment and feeling bad about yourself. •Measure your growth by comparing yourself to who you were in the past instead. For example, think about your life 10 years ago. Has it changed? Have you acquired new skills, new relationships, or left dysfunctional life patterns behind? S
By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker ocial media can be both good and bad but its effects on teenagers are still not well known. Humans are social animals and one can argue that social media helps us connect and grow stronger on a large scale. However, interactions on this magnitude can increase anxiety and negatively affect self-esteem amongst teenagers. Another reason parents should be vigilant is the constantly evolving nature of social media. New social media applications are being introduced that highlight sharing more pictures, commenting, and sometimes accelerate the negative symptoms of social media through anonymity. As social media takes over our cell phones and means of communication, it slowly takes over our time which would be spent on reflection or daily activities. Increasing amount of time is spent on Apps such as Instagram which can lead to negative body image feedback. Most children see the highlights and glamour posted by peers and influences which breeds negativity within them. Facebook often makes teenagers feel inadequate when they see positive milestones being achieved by fellow students. The time and effects of social media seep into our teenager’s minds when they go to bed, wait for the bus, study, and simply every moment of their life. Likes and comments on their pages are a virtual way for teenagers to assess where they stand in society. Upsides of Social Media are also strongly benefiting children and adults worldwide. There is the increased access and ease of communicating and reaching for help when they do require it. Teens who struggle with keeping communicating face to face can use social media to still con•You can also look at your life now and imagine what you would like it to look like five or 10 years in the future. There is information on everything and no one is alone. Help your Teens use Social Media •Show them the unimportance of “likes”- encourage spending time away from their phone and focus on enjoying the moment instead of looking at moments as opportunities to click a picture on Instagram. •Highlight cyber bullying overheard conversations about your children cyber bullying can help curb a major negative of social media. •Teach them the downsides of comparison- teenagers only post the best and it doesn’t always reflect reality. Teach them not to compare their backstory to someone else’s highlight by practicing gratitude and positive personal growth. •Fake vs Real friends- friends are easily available because of social media but they don’t always tend to be real. Teach them to be aware of who is following them and what benefit their feed might add to yours. •More face time- it’s even easier to “face time” in this day and age but encourage your children to actually conduct more face time by hanging out with their friends and chase adventures instead of virtually seeking it through their social media applications. Contrary to popular belief, there is a happy medium with using social media and our children. Canadian retaliatory tariffs against U.S. take effect today
By Teresa Wright — The Canadian Press Posted By: The Canadian Presson: July 01, OTTAWA — As the country celebrates Canada Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on the road highlighting the stand he has taken against the U.S. government’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products. Speaking in Leamington, Ont., this morning, Trudeau thanked residents and Canadians for always standing up for one another and for Canadian values. “This is who we are, we’re there for each other in times of difficulty, in times of opportunity. We lean on each other and we stand strong and that’s what we do from coast to coast to coast,” Trudeau said. The Ontario town is one of three stops the prime minister will make today as he crosses the country, and one of two stops designed to reflect the looming
trade war between Canada and the United States. Trudeau met with workers at a major canning and food processing operation in Leamington where the tomato paste used in French’s ketchup is made and later today will visit a major steel refinery in Regina — two industries at the centre of the trade dispute. Trudeau’s counter-tariffs take effect today — a month after the Trump administration slapped duties on U.S. steel and aluminum imports from Canada and other allies. Canada’s response includes imposing $16.6 billion worth of tariffs on a long list of consumer products that come from a wide range of sectors — from beer kegs, to ballpoint pens, to ketchup. On Friday Trudeau spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on the phone, reiterating that Canada has had “no choice” but to take countermeasures against the U.S. tariffs. It appears Trump, too, is not backing down. In an interview that aired on Fox News this morning, Trump said he will delay signing a revised version of the North American Free Trade Agreement until after the U.S. midterms in November in hopes of reaching a better deal. He said he could quickly sign an agreement with Mexico and Canada, “but I’m not happy with it. I want to make it more fair.” also The U.S. president also, once again,
threatened to impose tariffs on imported vehicles, saying, “The cars are the big ones.” Trudeau, meanwhile, kept his remarks upbeat today as he spoke to a crowd in Leamington, praising Canadians for their supportive attitudes in the face of a trade dispute with its largest trading partner. “There is so much to be proud of as a country, but the thing we always have to be most proud of is Canadians ourselves — the way we step, the way we lean on each other, the way we’re creative and optimistic about the future, the way we look at challenges as opportunities, to grow, to build, to be there for each other. That’s what the message we’re celebrating on Canada Day.” Trudeau was speaking on the front steps of Highbury Canco, with the CEO Sam Diab. Diab said in an interview that the tomato-processing facility will increase prices of its products as a response to the Canada and U.S. trade dispute. However, the company does not plan on laying off any workers or shrinking its production, Diab said. He added that Trudeau got a tour of the facility and they two spoke about the trade environment and how Diab supports Trudeau with the retaliatory tariffs. “We just need closure so that we can move forward and companies can start investing again,” said Diab, adding that the prime minister’s visit to the company made him feel more “confident” in the market.
“Our company will survive no matter what.”

23 pa k i s t a n The UN Report on Kashmir: Reassuring Development Shawwal 22,1439H July 6, 2018
T
By: Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai June 28, 2018 he United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights (UNHCHR) has issued its “Report on the Situation of Human Rights in Kashmir.” The report contains graphic documentation of human rights violations being committed by the Indian military and paramilitary forces in Indian Occupied Kashmir. This is a significant step towards greater international recognition of the serious abuses committed against Kashmiris at the hands of Indian army. This report takes the veil of secrecy off of India’s crimes against humanity. Perhaps now the global community can share the outrage felt by the people of Kashmir. The 49-pages report cites specific incidents where the Indian Government violated the very principles of human decency and democratic freedom against the people of Kashmir. The reports states that, “In responding to demonstrations that started in July 2016, Indian security forces used excessive force that led to unlawful killings and a very high number of injuries. … One of the most dangerous weapons used against protesters during the unrest in 2016 was the pellet-firing shotgun.” The report details many instances where the use of draconian laws have given sense of total impunity to the Indian army in Kashmir. It states “The government of India has passed legislation under the Jammu and Kashmir Disturbed Areas Act of 1990 which gives extraordinary power to all ranks of the Indian military and paramilitary forces.” These laws, the report emphasizes, “ have created structures that obstruct the normal course of law, impede accountability and jeopardize the right to remedy for victims of human rights violations.” The report underscored that “Impunity for human rights violations and lack of access to justice are key human rights challenges in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.” And that “Impunity for enforced or involuntary disappearances in Kashmir continues as there has been little movement towards credibly investigating complaints including into alleged sites of mass graves in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region.” Many international NGO’s have suggested that Kashmir was the largest army concentration anywhere in the world. The report noted that “Civil society and media often cite the figure of 500,000 to 700,000 troops which would make Kashmir one of the most militarized zones in the world.” As we know that during the latest phase of uprising , virtually the whole population of Kashmir turned on the streets to demand the right of self-determination to be given to the people of the territory. The report underlines this fact by stating; “While IndianAdministered Kashmir has experienced waves of protests in the past—in the late 1980s to early 1990s, 2008 and 2010—this current round of protests appears to involve more people than the past, and the profile of protesters has also shifted to include more young, middle-class Kashmiris, including females who do not appear to have been participating in the past.” It is a fact that bilateral talks between India and Pakistan have failed because they sought to by-pass the leadership of the people of Kashmir, which is the primary party to the dispute. This fact has been recognized in the report which clearly says, “There remains an urgent need to address past and ongoing human rights violations and to deliver justice for all people in Kashmir who have been suffering seven decades of conflict. Any resolution to the political situation in Kashmir should entail a commitment to ending the cycles of violence and accountability for past and current human rights violations and
abuses committed by all parties and redress for victims. Such a resolution can only be brought about by meaningful dialogue that includes the people of Kashmir.” The Indian human rights organizations and NGO’s including ‘The People’s Union of Civil Liberties’, and others sent out teams to Kashmir to study specific allegations of human rights abuses including torture and publish reports on their findings, which are often highly critical of government authorities. The United Nations report validates these finding by suggesting that [As a State party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibits torture under any circumstances (Article 7), India is obliged to ensure that no person is “subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”. There have long been persistent claims of torture by security forces in Kashmir.] Here are few more examples of torture cited in the report about torture. “On 18 August 2016, a 30-year-old college lecturer, Shabir Ahmad Mangoo, died after being severely beaten in the custody of the Indian Army.” “Another case of torture involving the Indian Army is that of manual labourer Nasrullah Khan who was allegedly detained and tortured at the Indian Army’s 27 Rashtriya Rifles camp on 31 August 2017.” Medical services and ambulances are clearly being targeted for no other reason than that they are carrying young men who show evidence of having already been in the line of fire somewhere and therefore again become victimized. There is clearly an intent to physically disable these young men and civilian population. The report warns that “Doctors in Srinagar accused the security forces of firing tear gas near hospitals and, in some cases, inside the hospital, which affected their ability to work and further affected the health of the patients.” Meanwhile to get the attention of international community remains a challenge. The world powers have taken a hands-off stance in having asked India for permission to send in a team to investigate. On the other hand, India does not allow the Kashmiri human rights activist to visit the international forums to raise the subject of human rights. Here are few examples cited in the report. Human rights defenders who have tried to bring international attention to the human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir have faced reprisals while access has been obstructed for some journalists.” “… prominent human rights defender Khurram Parvez was arrested and detained under PSA on 15 September 2016, a day after being prevented from travelling to the Human Rights Council in Geneva.” Human rights lawyer Kartik Murukutla, who works with Khurram Parvez at JKCCS, was detained at the New Delhi airport immigration desk on 24 September 2016 on his return from Geneva after attending the same Council session.” “French journalist and documentary filmmaker Paul Comiti was arrested on 9 De-
a comprehensive independent international investigation into allegations of human rights violations in Kashmir.” The report also makes 17 recommendations to the Government of India so as to bring these atrocities to an end, including: -- “Urgently repeal the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act, 1990.” -- “Establish independent, impartial and credible investigations to probe all civilian killings which have occurred since July 2016.” -- “In line with its standing invitation to the Special Procedures, accept the invitation requests of the almost 20 mandates that have made such requests; in particular, accept the request of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances and facilitate its visit to India, including to Jammu and Kashmir.” -- “Fully respect the right of self-determination of the people of Kashmir as protected under international law.” It is our hope that the United Nations report will mobilize the policy makers of the members states of the UN Human Rights Council to do everything in their constitutional power to stop the killings in Kashmir. It is further our hope that the policy makers of these member countries will look to solving the root cause of the problem – the unfulfilled promise of self-determination as guaranteed by successive United Nations Security Council resolutions. We believe that history is not predestined, and it is up to us to make peace its destiny in Kashmir through all of our energies, goodwill, wisdom, and compassion for the tragic afflictions of that once glorious land.
cember 2017 in Srinagar for allegedly violating Indian visa conditions.” It is well documented that the bloody occupation has resulted in massive human rights violations, particularly targeting women and children. The sanctity of women has been violated, in a gruesome and unforgiving fashion. The UN report upholds that [In the 2013 report on her mission to India, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, said, “[W]omen living in militarized regions, such as Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states, live in a constant state of siege and surveillance, whether in their homes or in public. Information received through both written and oral testimonies highlighted the use of mass rape, allegedly by members of the State security forces, as well as acts of enforced disappearance, killings and acts of torture and ill-treatment, which were used to intimidate and to counteract political opposition and insurgency.”] The United Nations report makes the following recommendation to the UN Human Rights Council to, “Consider the findings of Dr. Fai is the Secretary General, World Kashthis report, including the possible establish- mir Awareness Forum and can be reached at: ment of a commission of inquiry to conduct 1-202-607-6435 or gnfai2003@yahoo.com

Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 7 wickets to knock the hosts out of tri-nation series
Pakistan knocked Zimbabwe out of the Zim-Pak-Aus Twenty20 tri-series in Harare on Wednesday, beating the hosts by seven wickets with five deliveries to spare. Captain Sarfraz Ahmed saw his side home with an unbeaten 38, meaning that Zimbabwean all-rounder Solomon Mire’s efforts earlier in the game went in vain. Mire struck 94, the highest score by a Zimbabwean in a T20I, but Zimbabwe’s 162 for 4 was not enough to overcome the
world’s top ranked T20I side. Pakistan’s chase was given a rapid start by the openers. Haris Sohail and Fakhar Zaman took 56 from the powerplay, but Sohail holed out soon afterwards. When Zaman skied Mire to depart for 47, Pakistan needed more than eight runs an over from the last eight overs, but Sarfraz’s innings of calm precision kept them up with the asking rate. Executing his attacking strokes perfectly, Sarfraz found the gaps and the boundaries whenever they were needed. He displayed a particularly deft touch with his late cut, taking boundaries off left-arm spinners Tendai Chisoro and Wellington Masakadza with the stroke. With four runs needed from the final over, it was also the shot he used to end the game, gliding seamer Chris Mpofu to the third man boundary. Pakistan will face fellow-finalists Australia on Thursday in a dead rubber before the final of the series is played on Sunday.
