The opposition’s role in Palianment of Pakistan
T
HE tentative emergence of a so-called grand opposition alliance could help re-energise parliamentary politics after neither the governing party nor the opposition paid much heed to parliament in the last term. The PPP and PML-N numbers in the next National Assembly, along with support from the MMA and the ANP, could create a formidable opposition for the first time in a decade. Between 2008 and 2013, the PML-N was the lead opposition party in the National Assembly. But the absence of party boss Nawaz Sharif from the house and the PML-N’s general disinclination to take parliamentary affairs seriously combined to leave the opposition in parliament adrift. In 2016, the PTI ended its boycott of parliament; even though it was only the second-largest party in
the opposition, it could have positioned itself as effectively the lead opposition. But the PTI preferred to pursue its politics largely outside the assembly and there were few spells of robust parliamentary opposition. The PPP, the PML-N and other parties that have announced their intention to be a part of the opposition in the next parliament have also made a number of serious allegations regarding the fairness and transparency of last week’s polls. Those complaints will have to be addressed in due course in the appropriate forums and should not affect the collective opposition’s preparations for parliamentary politics. The PTI’s reforms agenda and attempts to stabilise the economy will require a role for parliament and the opposition should be pre-
pared to contribute effectively. It ought to be remembered that the architect of the PML-N’s economic policy, Ishaq Dar, consistently called for a national consensus on economic matters, and now the party has a chance to help support such a consensus in the opposition. Meanwhile, the PPP’s redistributive economic policies highlighted in its latest manifesto can be lobbied for inside parliament as the PTI tackles reforms. At a time when the democratic process is seemingly being pulled in opposite directions — the PTI and its allies euphoric and seemingly determined to push through meaningful reforms; the opposition parties denouncing what appear to have been significant distortions to the electoral process — there is a greater need than ever to stabilise politics and democracy.
Now is the time for the opposition to renew its commitment to democratic institutions and to shore up democratic norms. The PPP will have both the party chairman and co-chairman in the National Assembly for the first time. The PPP’s commitment to parliamentary politics has been fairly consistent in the last decade. A third consecutive assembly could see that commitment rejuvenated. Meanwhile, with the de facto PMLN boss seemingly determined to strengthen democracy, the party’s legislators should demonstrate a hitherto missing resoluteness to improving democratic institutions. A parliamentary democracy demands that parliament itself be the focal point of politics. Source: The Dawn.com
Will PM-elect Imran be able to form a transparent and corruption-free government? A million dollar question is: does This has created an unmanageable and boom.
By:Abdul Rahman Baloch Surrey, BC July 25 polls in the problem-ridden Pakistan have mandated Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tahrik-eInsaf (PTI) — to take the State’s driving seat. Among the pledges made in PTI’s manifesto, the cricketer-turned and Oxford educated politician Imran accorded top priority on the uplift of Pakistan’s manpower and, for that matter, transforming the country into a social welfare society in real term. Inspired by Nelson Mandela, Mahatir Mohammad, Quaed-eAzam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and - above all - by the example set by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in the form of universally known brotherhood as practised in Madina 1400 years ago, Imran Khan is determined to transforming Pakistan into a society where rich and poor; black and white; king and pauper are seen enjoying equal status based on justice.
the team in Imran’s command carry the capacity - professional, intellectual and material - to have his promises fulfilled ? Besides the task of reshaping the society into a justice providing culture, Imran Khan’s Pakistan inherits a series of challenges - strong rivalry causing inland opposition coupled with imbalances with international community - that are hard to meet with ease in the given circumstance. Of them, the most crucial and typical are the deteriorating finances; unwelcome relationship with neighbours and the world community. The foreign debts signed during the last two decades have subsequently driven Pakistan to grey line in the international terms; paying back the interest thereof is the biggest task to overcome. Contrarily, the volume of Pakistan’s exports have declined drastically as against the size of imports that have been sky rocketing.
deficit in the balance of payment, shrinking Pakistan’s forex reserves to what can meet the cost of imports for two months only. This status tops in the list of critical issues that Pakistan is going to face in next few months. In the scores of his pledges, Imran has been vocal that he would convince the Pakistan community in the overseas to invest billions in Pakistan. Let the people of Pakistan hope this expectations of Imran materializes. If this really happens, the government under Imran’s leadership shall be able to hold back forex crisis for a month or two. On domestic side, the volume of circular debt is huge in the term that it is very hard to manage. Unless and until services of personnel with appropriate intellect, qualification, expertise and experience are obtained and applied in managing finances, the volume of circular debts shall continue to intensify
The unfortunate state of affairs facing Pakistan is that hardly any one of the team at Imran’s disposal carries appropriate capacity areas such as finance and foreign affairs. and finance to govern in the right direction. And lack of means that facilitate addressing differences with religious bigots is another hard task that the present day PTI is not capable to overcome. Unlike his aids, PTI chief Imran is inclined to inviting other parties to contribute in the mission of putting the country’s train on right track. With such a bent of mind, Imran is heading to form a coalition government that shall govern the federation. Finality and subsequent announcement of the names thereof are likely to come forth shortly. This is the post election state of affairs in Pakistan as at July 27, and PTI is likely to sign for and subsequently announce a coalition cabinet to govern the State.

The B.C. Liberals’ track record on dirty money in B.C.
December, 2007: The Integrated Illegal Gaming Enforcement Team (IIGET) prepares report warning that if they are disbanded, high-level illegal gambling targets will conduct their operations with impunity. January 29, 2009: Report from IIGET warns of “extreme vulnerability” to money laundering in B.C. casinos and describes how Hells Angels members have succeeded in infiltrating gaming operations. April 1, 2009: Rich Coleman eliminates funding for IIGET and disbands the unit. October 21, 2009: IIGET’s former commander Fred Pinnock speaks to journalists and states that his team should have been expanded, not shut down January, 2011: Inspector Barry Baxter speaks to media about suspicions of dirty money in B.C.’s casinos and “sophisticated money-laundering activities by organized crime.” Rich Coleman criticizes Insp. Baxter and dismissed his concern, saying “Yeah, I know what he said, and I don’t agree with him, neither do all the superiors of his in the RCMP.” (CBC, 2011) November 19, 2012: The head of the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch begins to raise concerns of suspiciously large amounts of cash entering the gambling system. “Who has $200,000 in $20 dollar bills wrapped in elastic bands in $10,000 bundles?” (German, June 27, 2018) March, 2013: In an email, the head of gaming enforcement investigations warns of the possibility of money laundering and other illegal activity taking
place Instead of acting, the Mike de Jong, fires the investigator. Late 2014: BCLC becomes concerned with the lack of RCMP investigation into dirty money. July, 2015: After years of BC Liberal denial and failure to act, the money-laundering crisis historic levels with one casino acception $13.5 million in twentydollar bills in a single month. July 2016: Government receives a report from MNP LLP recommending changes to anti-money laundering practices. B.C. Liberals fail to implement recommendations and withhold the report from the public. September, 2017: Attorney General David Eby releases MNP report suppressed by the B.C. Liberal government. Attorney General David Eby appoints independent expert Peter German to conduct a review of money laundering at B.C. casinos. October, 2017:An RCMP probe into uncovers alleged international criminal involvement in money laundering at B.C. casinos. Andrew Wilkinson cashes a cheque for $5000 from Gateway Casinos for his leadership campaign. Other B.C. Liberal contenders cash another $20,000. December 5, 2017: Attorney General David Eby announces interim recommendations from Peter German to combat money laundering, and directs BCLC and the GPEB to implement them. June 27, 2018: Peter German releases a full report confirming the prevalence of money laundering in B.C. casinos and highlighting the previous government’s decision to disband IIGET as making matters worse. B.C. Liberals hide former Ministers responsible. Instead, Andrew Wilkinson puts forward new MLA Jas Johal who fails to accept any responsibility, and blames the RCMP. RCMP issued a statement to correct the record: “At
times, government is briefed on sensitive information concerning police investigation that cannot be released. However, it was the decision of government to disband [the] Integrated Illegal Gaming Enforcement Team (IIGET).” June 28, 2018:Andrew Wilkinson himself speaks to the issue. Rather than taking responsibility for the previous B.C. Liberal government ignoring the problem, he again blames the RCMP for the decision to disband the task force. July 3, 2018:When asked whether the B.C. Liberal’s response to money laundering took too long while the problem grew out of hand, former Attorney General Suzanne Anton says, “That’s correct. And it was slow.” (CBC, July 3, 2018) July 5, 2018: Rich Coleman finally speaks to the issue, but denies responsibility. When asked what he would change now that the extent of dirty money is public, he says “I think it’s difficult to say you would do anything differently.” (CKNW, July 5, 2018) He continues to blame the RCMP, and denies that the B.C. Liberals accepted big money from the casinos named in German’s report. In fact, Elections BC reports show that between 2015 and 2017, the B.C. Liberals took $220,302 from gateway Casinos and $127,274 from Great Canadian Gaming Corp. Coleman himself received a $390 donation from Gateway Casinos on Election Day, 2017. July 10, 2018: IIGET’s former head Fred Pinnock speaks to journalists, clearly states who needs to accept responsibility:“Fault lies at the feet of the B.C. Liberals while they were in government,” said Pinnock. “They all knew what was going on in those casinos […] It was wild west in those large casinos where organized criminal activity was running amok.” (Global News, July 10, 2018)

PTI mulling over which foreign leaders to invite for Imran Khan’s oath-taking ceremony
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Wednesday met Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua to discuss which foreign dignitaries could be invited to the prime minister’s oathtaking ceremony on August 11, DawnNewsTv reported. Sources privy to the separate meetings held between PTI’s Shireen Mazari and Shafqat Mahmood, and the meeting with the foreign secretary, said that the PTI leaders wished to know which foreign dignitaries it would be possible to invite for the ceremony. The sources said that the PTI leaders wished to invite the heads of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) member states ─ including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as China and Turkey. According to sources, there was also a discussion not inviting any Saarc members to the event. The PTI leaders also
asked the FO for suggestions on whom they should invite to the meeting. Members of the FO maintained that calling foreign leaders to the oath taking is a sensitive matter and all perspectives need to be taken into consideration. Initial arguments from the FO suggested that the office believes Pakistan would face a bigger embarrassment if the Indian PM declined the invitation. PTI Spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry later confirmed to our correspondent that the party had asked the FO about inviting foreign leaders and dignitaries to the event. Chaudhry told Dawn that the PTI had asked the FO if it would be possible to invite foreign dignitaries, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, given the short period of time before the ceremony takes place. He had said that the party is awaiting a response from the FO on the matter. Additionally, he said, the party had invited celebrities like Amir Khan, Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavasker for the ceremony. Chaudhry confirmed the developments in an informal media talk outside the Supreme Court, where he had gone to meet Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar. Talking about his meeting with the CJP, Chaudhry said that he had met with the CJP in his capacity as a senior advocate of the Supreme Court. “The PTI wants to build bridges with all institutions as we are in the government,” he said, adding: “We want a smooth relation with all institutions; we don’t want acrimony or confrontation with any institution.” Source: dawn.com

Protests over poll results to continue, says MMA chief Salim
ISLAMABAD: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chief of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), on Tuesday asked his supporters to continue their protests against ‘rigged’ election results and announced that a call would soon be given for the launch of massive protests across the country. “The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has
emerged as a major party in this election only through rigging,” the Maulana said, adding that the PTI should rather accept the open involvement of the ‘establishment’ in the election. After a meeting of the MMA held here at the residence of Jamaat-i-Islami deputy chief Mian Aslam, Maulana Fazl in his press talk several times used the term ‘establishment’ to decry the election results that he said had been concocted. He said all the parties had expressed doubts about the transparency of the elections. About their move to boycott the National Assembly, Maulana Fazl said the MMA leadership was united, but all the decisions would be made through consensus. He accused the PTI of buying MNAs and said: “The PTI is involved in the country’s worst horse trading.” There was no reason that the PTI should be making a cabinet — it should refrain from doing so, he added. Criticising the Election Commission of Pakistan, he said it had failed to execute its duty of holding free, fair and transparent elections. Source: dawn.com

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Wednesday announced its decision to extend support to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) for the formation of the upcoming federal government. The decision was revealed by MQM-P convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui while appearing on Geo TV’s evening show ‘Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay Saath’. “Yes, we have agreed to cooperate with them [PTI] for the formation of [a coalition] government at the Centre,” Siddiqui said when
to join the Tehreek-i-Insaf. Strongly asserting that the party had “gone through so many [unpleasant] experiences in the past” with the PPP government in Sindh, Siddiqui said it was not conscionable for MQM to join the PPP in opposing the formation of a PTI-led government “given the current situation in Sindh”. Earlier, as news emerged of an All Parties Conference (APC) convening in Islamabad on Thursday, the MQM-P had confirmed that it would not at-

Trump ‘unreliable’, talks offer US-Mexico NAFTA talks minus Canada: feds insist they’re encouraged worthless: Iranian officials
Donald Trump’s surprise declaration that he is willing to meet with Iran’s leadership without “preconditions” has been met with deep distrust in Tehran, just as Washington’s top diplomat already walked back some of the US president’s comments. On Monday, a week after threatening Iran and nearly three months after withdrawing the United States from a landmark multinational nuclear dear with Tehran, Trump offered to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to discuss how to improve ties. In response, Bahram Qasemi, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, said on Tuesday that Trump’s offer contradicts his actions, pointing to the US’ moves to impose sanctions on Iran and put pressure on other countries to avoid conducting business with it. “Sanctions and pressures are the exact opposite of dialogue,” Qasemi was quoted as saying by Fars news agency. “How can Trump prove to the Iranian nation that his comments of last night reflect a true intention for negotiation and have not been expressed for populist gains,” he added. Ali Motahari, deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament, said negotiations “would be a humiliation” following the US’ withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear pact with world powers. “If Trump had not withdrawn from the nuclear deal and not imposed (new) sanctions on Iran, there would be no problem with negotiations with America,” he told state news agency IRNA. Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, who heads the parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, suggested a US return to the nuclear deal would be needed
before Tehran could think of negotiating, while Kamal Kharrazi, the head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump’s offer was worthless. Still, Ali Akbar Nategh Nouri, a senior cleric and member of the influential Expediency Council, said Trump’s offer should not be rejected out of hand. He said “we have to contemplate” the gesture, but also cautioned “we should not rejoice over this offer and not get excited,” according to the state-run IRNA news agency. But despite Trump’s comments about meeting without any preconditions, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later listed several demands for such a summit to take place. “The president wants to meet with folks to solve problems,” Pompeo, who in May set out 12 steep conditions for inclusion in a new nuclear deal with Iran, told CNBC. “If the Iranians demonstrate a commitment to making fundamental changes in how they treat their own people, reduce their malign behaviour, agree that it’s worthwhile to enter into a nuclear agreement that actually prevents proliferation, then the president said he’s prepared to sit down and have the conversation with them.” Speaking to Al Jazeera, Foad Izadi, professor of world studies at the University of Tehran, pointed out to the different statements coming out from Washington and said “no one in Iran” could accept Pompeo’s latest conditions. “[it would] be political suicide,” he said. “When you translate those preconditions in Farsi, the general sense is that the US is asking Iran to let the US run Iran’s domestic policy; the second precondition sounds like they want us to let the US runs Iran’s foreign policy;and the third precondition sounds ... that they don’t want Iran to have missiles or a peaceful nuclear programme.” Earlier this month, Pompeo compared Iran’s leaders to a “mafia” and promised unspecified backing for Iranians unhappy with their government. He also said the US government was launching a Farsi-language channel on TV, radio, digital and social media platforms. Source: Al-Jazeera
15 killed as gunmen storm government building in Jalalabad Afghan security forces have battled two gunmen who stormed a government building in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, taking dozens of people hostage. The siege on Tuesday at the refugees and repatriations directorate compound, which began after a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the building’s entrance, lasted for several hours, during which intermittent gunfire and blasts could be heard. Spokesman Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the government of Nangarhar province, said the incident appeared to be over with two gunmen killed and much of the building destroyed. He said at least 15 people had been killed and 15 wounded although the total may rise as rescue workers search the site. Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the local provincial council, said eight had been killed and as many as 30 wounded. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. “Around 11am local time, a car laden with explosives, drove up to this compound, two gunmen jumped out and then they set off the first of several explosions, then Afghan Special Forces arrived and a gun battle ensued for the following six hours,” said Al Jazeera’s Charlotte Bellis, reporting from Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul.
She added that the targeted building is in a “very sensitive area, with the United Nationscompound next door and a large hospital on the other side”. According to one witness, a passer-by named Obaidullah, the attack began when a black car with three occupants pulled up at the entrance to a building used by the department of refugee affairs, and a gunman got out firing around him. One attacker blew himself up at the gate and two gunmen entered the building, which is in an area close to shops and government offices, Obaidullah told Reuters news agency. Minutes later, the car exploded, wounding people in the street, he said. “We saw several people wounded and helped to carry them away.” Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the local provincial council, said around 40 people appeared to be caught inside the building, which caught fire in the initial stages of the attack. One hostage had called the security services and told them that the attackers had ordered the people inside not to move, he said.Khogyani said the attack happened during a meeting with NGOs working on refugee-related issues. The head of the directorate and several other people were taken to safety, he said.
Canada’s continental partners are simply trying to work through difficult bilateral sticking points on NAFTA, federal insiders insist, even as the Canadian government appears to have been left out of ongoing talks between the United States and Mexico. A senior government official said Tuesday that the U.S. and Mexico’s return to the table to sort out their differences is a positive sign for the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement -- even if Canada wasn’t invited to take part. Top Canadian negotiators are expected to rejoin NAFTA talks by mid-August although no meetings have been scheduled yet, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter in public. U.S. trade czar Robert Lighthizer and Mexican Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo will meet again this week in Washington to discuss NAFTA, according to media reports. They also met face to face last week. Trade talks between the two countries have intensified since the recent election win by Mexico’s president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has assigned his own experts to work with officials from the outgoing administration on pursuing an updated NAFTA before he takes office Dec. 1. American optimism about a new NAFTA deal has also been heating up. In recent days, the Trump administration has signalled an agreement could be reached on the pact by the end of August. So far, however, Canadian negotiators have yet to participate in the summertime, highlevel push towards an update to the threecountry deal. The Canadian official rejected the idea Ottawa has been frozen out of the talks and argued it’s not unusual for two of the NAFTA partners to hold discussions on bilateral issues without the third partner in the room. They said Canada is confident NAFTA will remain a trilateral deal, even though U.S. Donald Trump has threatened in the past to ditch it for oneon-one trade agreements. The official also noted that the U.S. and Mexico have issues to figure out between themselves, such as their differences on labour changes in the auto sector, textiles and seasonal fruits. Another senior Canadian source said Tuesday they’re “not that fazed at all” by the U.S.-Mexican meetings on NAFTA. “I actually feel somewhat, cautiously encouraged by the fact that the Mexicans are able to
be back at the table,” the government source said, also on condition of anonymity. “I think the fact they’re able to carve out some space to pick up on the conversation from where it was at, without knowing the outcomes, that at least in and of itself isn’t a bad thing.” A spokeswoman for Lighthizer also stressed Tuesday that there’s nothing strange about one-on-one NAFTA talks. “In addition to the trilateral meetings, throughout the renegotiation of NAFTA there have been numerous bilateral meetings among the three partners, including meetings between Canada and Mexico, Canada and the United States, and Mexico and the United States,” Emily Davis said in a statement. NAFTA’s renegotiation has mostly been stalled since May, when the three sides were unable to strike a deal before the Mexican presidential election campaign. Lopez Obrador won the July 1 vote. One of the Canadian officials said Ottawa has seen a meaningful change in approach from the U.S. on NAFTA -- externally and internally -- over the last seven days. “That’s not an unreasonable time frame if everybody wants to get it done,” Lighthizer said. “My hope is that we will before very long have a conclusion with respect to Mexico and that as a result of that, Canada will come in and begin to compromise. I don’t believe that they have compromised in the same way the United States or Mexico has.” Ahead of last week’s NAFTA talks between Lighthizer and Guajardo, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, Finance Minister Bill Morneau and International Trade Minister Jim Carr met with Lopez Obrador in Mexico City. Following the meeting, Freeland said she was hopeful NAFTA negotiations could hit a higher gear. Source: CTV News
The attack is the latest in a series of attacks that hit Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, in recent weeks, killing and wounding dozens of people. On Saturday, a series of explosions went off in the city before attackers rushed a medical training centre for midwives. A gun battle that lasted for nearly six hours ensued, in which two people were killed. On Monday, Nangarhar provincial health officials said that in the past three months at least 160 people have been killed and more than 490 wounded in attacks on the province. Separately, a roadside bomb hit a Kabulbound passenger bus in western Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 37 others, including many
women and children, officials said.“The attack took place very early this morning, the bus with dozens of people on board drove over a roadside bomb,” Bellis said. “The government is blaming the attack on the Taliban,” she added. The wounded are being treated in a hospital in Herat province. There was no immediate confirmation that the Taliban was responsible for the blast. The explosion took place as the bus travelled through Bala Baluk district of Farah at 4:30am (00:00 GMT), provincial governor spokesman Naser Mehri told AFP. Photos posted on social media - purportedly of the bus - showed the vehicle’s blackened shell and dozens of men standing at the scene. The Taliban has a heavy presence in Farah. It launched a major attempt to take over the provincial capital in May, triggering intense fighting with US and Afghan forces. After a day-long battle, Taliban fighters were forced to the outskirts of the city. Civilians have borne the brunt of the 17year conflict in Afghanistan. Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), such as remotely detonated or pressure-plate bombs, are one of the main causes of casualties. Such IEDs caused 877 civilian casualties in the first half of 2018 - 232 deaths and 645 injuries - accounting for 17 percent of overall casualties. Source: Al-Jazeera

Justin Trudeau’s sunny ways won in 2015. UNICEF: 78 million newborns at risk when breastfeeding is delayed Can his brand survive?
Trudeau was the ideal candidate for dark times when he was elected. But even as he gains popularity for opposing Trump, Brand Trudeau looks vulnerable. President Donald Trump had already vamoosed early from the G7 summit in early June when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped in front of a “Charlevoix” backdrop emblazoned with the silhouettes of an unmistakably Canadian Shield forest. It would be “with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness” that Canada would soon enact retaliatory tariffs, Trudeau confirmed, in response to the trade war Trump seemed determined to launch. “I have made it very clear to the president that it is not something we relish doing, but it is absolutely something we will do,” Trudeau said, with a slight shrug, in the manner of a parent simply laying out the consequences for a mid-tantrum child. “Because Canadians, we’re polite, we’re reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around.” That last line started out with a lopsided grin and the earnest tone Trudeau often adopts when making statements about the nature of the country he leads, but it ended up somewhere just shy of “Just watch me.” Philippe Gar-
neau, president of GWP Brand Engineering, looked at this moment as an advertising guy and thought, “This is great, the character did something!” To Garneau, the moment contained just the right amount of emotion. “It wasn’t dramatic or histrionic, it was very calm,” says Garneau, who is the brother of Trudeau’s minister of transport, Marc Garneau. “If I was part of his team, I would say, ‘How do we get him to do more of that?’ ” Trudeau and his Liberal party swept to power in 2015 during a political moment that was perfect for the sunny ways they touted and the savvy way they used social media and political branding to broadcast those ways, and the youthful, telegenic leader who embodied them. Voters had tired of the dour, workmanlike character of Harper’s Conservative government. Life at large seemed buoyant, and the self-conscious optimism and progressiveness of Trudeau & Co. were perfectly poised to catch the updraft. For months, there was a frisson of novelty around everything they did—even if you were inclined to wonder if all those photobombs were strictly necessary. Source: macleans.ca

An estimated 78 million newborns have a higher risk of death each year from not drinking their mother’s milk within the first hours of being born, according to the United Nations. A new report - jointly published on Monday by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, the UN children’s agency, to coincide with the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week- observed mothers in 76 low and middle-income countries. It found that only two out of five babies are breastfed immediately after being born. It also said that while instant breastfeeding is very common in eastern and southern Africa, that is not the case in East Asia and the Pacific, where less than a third of newborns get to drink their mother’s milk soon after being born.“When it comes to the start of breastfeeding, timing is everything. In many countries, it can even be a matter of life or death,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF’s executive director. “Each year, millions of newborns miss out on the benefits of early breastfeeding and the reasons - all too often - are things we can change. Mothers simply don’t receive enough support to breastfeed within those crucial minutes after birth, even from medical personnel at health facilities,” she said. Earlier studies cited in the report showed that delaying breastfeeding between two and 23 hours increases an infant’s risk of dying by 33 percent. Among newborns who started breastfeeding a day or more after birth, the risk was more than twice as high. The report suggests several reasons why many babies are not breastfed immediately, including the practice of throwing away the mother’s first milk and feeding newborns sugar water or infant formula. Colostrum, the first milk produced by moth-
ers, is sometimes called the baby’s “first vaccine” because it is high in nutrients and antibodies.“Breastfeeding gives children the best possible start in life,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of WHO. “We must urgently scale up support to mothers - be it from family members, healthcare workers, employers and governments, so they can give their children the start they deserve,” he said. A rise in elective caesarean sections in many countries and the gaps in the quality of postnatal medical care are also contributing to a delay in breastfeeding, according to the report. In Egypt, c-section rates more than doubled between 2005 and 2014, rising from 20 to 52 percent. In the same time period, the rates of early initiation of breastfeeding decreased from 40 to 27 percent. In the report, UNICEF and WHO urge governments to adopt strong legal measures to restrict the marketing of infant formula and other breast milk substitutes. In July, the United States drew criticism for allegedly putting pressure on other members of the World Health Assembly, the WHO’s decision-making body, to withdraw their support from a WHO resolution promoting breastfeeding. US officials have denied the claims. Breastfeeding Week aims to inform people about the benefits of breastfeeding, which include strengthening the baby’s immune system and providing nutrition for healthy growth. It can also reduce the mother’s chances of getting diabetes and some cancers. UNICEF recommend that babies should be exclusively breastfed up to an age of six months, after which they can begin incorporating some food and other liquid into their diet alongside breastfeeding. Dozens of people were injured on Tuesday when an AeroMexico plane with 101 people on board crashed just after takeoff in Mexico’s state of Durango, but authorities said nobody died in the accident. Video footage showed emergency crews on the scene as smoke poured from the largely intact Embraer E190. Jose Rosas Aispuro, Durango state governor, said on Twitter: “It is confirmed that there were no deaths in the flight crash AM2431.” He said the plane was hit by a gust of wind, causing it to lose speed. Its leg wing hit the ground, he said, but the aircraft skidded to halt in a horizontal position, enabling passengers to escape. Some 99 passengers and four crew members were aboard, according to the Mexican transport minister, of which 49 had to be taken to hospital. Jackeline Flores, a passenger, told reporters the plane came down in heavy rain. She and her daughter escaped from a hole in the fuselage as the aircraft filled up with smoke and flames, she said.
“A little girl who left the plane was crying because her legs were burned,” she said. Ms Flores said her passport and documents burned in the fire.“I feel blessed and grateful to God,” she added. Israel Solano Mejia, director of the city’s civil defence agency, told Foro TV that the plane “made it off the ground, but fell nosefirst” just a few hundred yards from the end of the runway. “The nose took the hit. The most seriously injured is the pilot,”he said. However, he added, “the majority of passengers left (the plane) under their own power”. Local media said witnesses described seeing survivors walk away from the wreckage. An internet site on the aviation industry says the Embraer 190 airliner that crashed Tuesday in northern Mexico was about a decade old. The web site Planespotters.net says the Brazilian-made medium-range jet had seen service with two other airlines before joining the Aeromexico fleet. Source: telegraph.co.uk

Body found several kilometres from missing Vancouver Island woman’s car last seen fuelling her
Police are not releasing the identity of the body. Police say a body has been discovered several kilometres from where a missing Vancouver Island woman’s car was found. Oak Bay police said Wednesday a body was found 11 kilometres from Gladys Barman’s abandoned vehicle Tuesday night. She was
car at a gas station in Saanich on July 5. Her family said she was experiencing memory loss and cognitive decline. The vehicle was discovered over two weeks later on a logging road in the Lake Cowichan area, but there was no sign of Barman. The search for her was suspended last week after “all viable options” for finding her were exhausted, police said but resumed after temperatures cooled. Police say efforts are now underway to identify the body and Barman’s next of kin have been notified. The coroner is leading the investigation, police say. cbc.ca/news/

HADITH & F A I T H A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: Some among us put on Ihram for Hajj alone (Hajj Mufrad) ; some of us for Hajj and Umra together (Qiran), and some of us for Tamattal (first for Umra and after completing it for Hajj). Sahih Muslim 1211
Hajj 2018(1439H)
ajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory to perform Hajj at least once in your lifetime. Hajj 2018 will commence on Sunday, 19th of August 2018 and will continue till Friday, 24th of August 2018. This is the tentative date as the actual date is contingent on the sighting of the moon of Dhul Hijjah. According to the Islamic Calendar, Muslim Pilgrimage begins on the 8th day of DhulHijjah and ends on the thirteenth day of the same Islamic month. There are many rituals in the performance of Hajj and these may be completed over the course of the 5 days. Every year, millions Muslims participate in this holy pilgrimage to the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. At the time of Prophet (PBUH), Hajj was made compulsory for the Muslims to perform once in their lifetime. The overarching aim of the Hajj is to strengthen one’s faith and purify him or her of sins. Allah mentions the benefits of Hajj as:
“That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He has bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate.” (Quran 22:28) The rites of Hajj (Islamic Pilgrimage) were laid down in current form by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). These rituals signify the sacrifices and the complete submission to Allah (SWT) by Prophet Ibrahim (RA). Thereafter, every act performed in Hajj, from performing Tawaaf and Saa’i to stoning the wall of Satan, is the reminder of the faith one should have in Allah, as shown by Ibrahim (RA). In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet (PBUH) also mentioned the significance of Hajj: “Allah’s Apostle was asked, ‘What is the best deed?’ He replied, ‘To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad)’. The questioner then asked, ‘What is the next (in good-
ness)?’ He replied, ‘To participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.’ The questioner again asked, ‘What is the next (in goodness)?’ He replied, ‘To perform Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca) ‘Mubrur, (which is accepted by Allah and is performed with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure only and not to show off and without committing a sin and in accordance with the traditions of the Prophet).” (Bukhari 2:25) On the 10th of Dhul Hijja, Eid al Adha is celebrated. It is the day when Muslims slaughter an animal, generally a sheep, a goat or a camel, remembering the sacrifice of Ibrahim (RA). Ibrahim (RA) intended to slaughter his son Ismail (RA) on Allah’s orders, but Allah replaced Ismail with a sheep just when Ibrahim was about to go ahead with the sacrifice. This submissive act of faith by Ibrahim (RA) as an integral part of Hajj as it signifies trust and total surrender to the will
of the Almighty. Hajj is meant to be an empowering event in a Muslim’s life, thereafter, it is needed to be performed in a manner prescribed by Allah as each act is historically significant and meaningful. Source: islamicfinder.org
mad. He had one thing in his mind--the principle of Islamic democracy. Mr. Jinnah told members of Shahi Jirga and leaders of Balochistan: “It is my belief that our salvation lies in following the golden rules of conduct set for us by our great lawgiver--the Prophet of Islam. Let us lay the foundation of our democracy on the basis of truly Islamic ideals and principles.” How deeply impressed was the father of the nation by the life and achievements of the last Messenger of God is not a secret in any sense of the word. The Quaid’s speeches and addresses at public meetings provide an ample proof of the fact. In a broadcast talk to the people of the US, he expressed his belief that ultimate shape of the constitution of Pakistan would be of a democratic type, embodying the principles of Islam. He made it clear that in any case Pakistan would not be a theocratic state. “We’ve many non-Muslims---Hindus, Christians and Parsis ---they’re all Pakistanis. They’ll enjoy the same rights and privileges as any other citizen, and will play their rightful part in the affairs of Pakistan.” That meant paving the way for inter-faith harmony and national unity. The fact of the matter is the Quaid borrowed ideas of social and economic justice and tolerance from Prophet Muhammad. True followers of Islam proudly recall how intelligently the Messenger of God abolished the tribal distinction and grouped the inhabitants of Medina under one general name
Ansar (Helper). In order to unite the former and the Muhajireen (Emigrants) in closer bonds, he established a brotherhood between them. He realised the truth that the foundation of the Islamic state would be weak unless it was based upon the goodwill and support of all sections of people. Toleration of others’ religion is necessary where different races live together. His policy in this respect was: “Live and let live others.” There are many acts of Prophet Muhammad which are of great relevance today. One is that he granted to all Christians a charter which is a monument of enlightened tolerance. They were not to be unfairly taxed, no bishop was to be driven out of his bishopric, no monk was to be expelled from his monastery, and no pilgrim was to be detained from the pilgrimage. In case of the repair of churches the Muslims were to help the Christians. Another significant act relates to equality and social justice. A citizen called Ta’ima Ibn Ubairaq, nominally a Muslim, but really a hypocrite and given to all sorts of wicked deeds, was suspected of having stolen a set of armour. When put on hot trial, he planted the stolen property in the house of a Jew, where it was found. The Jew denied the charge and accused Ta’ima of the theft, but
the Muslim community’s sympathies were with Ta’ima because of his ‘profession’ of Islam. The case was brought before Prophet Muhammad, who acquitted the Jew according to strict principle of justice. Some people tried to prejudice the Prophet Muhammad against the Jew and deceive him into using his authority to favour Ta’ima, but he was firm as “guided by God”. The Prophet, who was also commander-inchief, thus, not only by words but also by deeds, treated the Jews and Christians with the utmost tolerance and regard and respect for their faith and belief. Learning more and more from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and sayings of the founder of Pakistan and following the examples set by them in an atmosphere of liberty, equality and fraternity will awaken the people to the necessity of unity, faith and discipline at the time their country is passing through a critical phase of its life. zasarwar@hotmail.com
Islam for peaceful co-existence, not violence
By:Zafar Alam Sarwar, Islamabad ,Pak. About five years ago, 14-year-old student Malala Yousufzai was shot and wounded in Swat Valley by an extremist group. Her fault: She spoke out about militants, emphasizing the need for education of girls and empowerment of women. She was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize in the wake of threats to the innocent but brave student and her family. Also unforgettable are those who were killed and injured in anger across Pakistan and Middle East over a film in the U.S. ridiculing Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Slogan-chanting, violent protests, mass rallies and setting public and private property on fire---all very sad and against the principles of democracy. While in Thailand from Pakistan, frankly speaking, one witnessed in this backdrop the spirit of brotherhood in Bangkok and Ayutthaya as is very often visible in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, especially among the middle and lower middle segments of society. Is it because of any common socioeconomic and political problems? One reminisces, in this context, speeches of the architect of Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, whose selfless leadership provided all-time food for thought to masses of any country in the world. As a man, he professed Islam and remained large-hearted, broad-minded and tolerant drawing inspiration from Prophet Muham-

The secret no government wants you to know: No leader has a ‘mandate’ By: David Moscrop
Opinion: Leaders across Canada’s political spectrum have used their ‘mandate’ as a defence for their actions. But voters beware: that’s not how our system works.Democracy is like former U.S. Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart’s opinion on pornography: It’s difficult to define, but you’ll recognize it when you see it. And people see democracy all over the place. Do an informal poll around the dinner table or on the pitch or at the pub, ask “What is democracy?” and you’ll get an array of responses: It’s elections, or it’s the government doing
what you want them to do, or it’s the freedom to choose, or it’s the ability to affect outcomes by participating in political decision-making. Governments also see democracy all over the place, but they conveniently adjust their definition to fit their ambitions, their agendas, and the particularities of the moment. Often, governments from across the political spectrum will cite a “mandate” as justification for what they have done or intend to do. “The people chose us and our plan,” rings the voice in the hall, “and that is what we are going to do!”
It’s a familiar justification for policy, especially right now. In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford has decided to intrude into municipal politics—returning to what he claims to know—by announcing that his government will nearly halve city council seats in Toronto to 25 from 47 and cancel regional board chair elections in the province, just before election season. It’s like a referee stopping a match midway to inform the players that rules have changed and, if you don’t mind, half of you need to hit the showers and don’t bother coming back to the field. B.C. NDP has five-percentage point lead over B.C. Liberals in new Insights West poll
By Charlie Smith
There’s mixed but still mostly good news for B.C. New Democrats in the latest survey by a B.C.-based pollster. Insights West has found that when it comes to voting intentions, the NDP has the support of 37 percent of decided voters.
The B.C. Liberals are in second place at 32 percent, with the B.C. Greens in third with 17 percent. The B.C. Conservatives have the support of 12 percent of decided voters, up four percent from six months earlier. Premier John Horgan’s personal-approval rating dipped by six percentage points over the
past six months. It’s now at 47 pecent, which is still significantly higher than B.C. Green Leader Andrew Weaver (37 percent) and B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson (24 percent). Horgan’s disapproval rating is 40 percent. Source: straight.com
Conservatives set another quarterly fundraising record OTTAWA, ON – The Conservative Party has set a second quarter fundraising record outside of an election year with a total of over $6 million in donations, and nearly 41,000 contributors. This marks the second quarter in a row with over $6 million donated. “We have never started a non-election year this strong in our entire history,” said Scott Lamb, Conservative Party President. “Since the election of Andrew Scheer as our leader, it hasn’t just been improvements in our fundraising, but we’ve been setting new records in our fundraising.” Q1 and Q2 totals of years immediately before an election year range from $7.6 million in 2005 to $9.2 million in 2014. With a first quarter of $6.01 million and a second quarter of $6.04 million, a total of $12.05 million makes the first half of 2018 the largest in Party history outside of an election year.
The Conservative Party remains the only political party that has been able to turn a significant profit in its financials. According to the most recent filing, the majority governing Liberal Party had to take out a loan to cover its losses. “The Liberals are running their party like they’re running our country – at a deficit. They are losing money and donors,” said Dustin van Vugt, Executive Director of the Conservative Party. “With the abolishment of the per vote subsidy, fundraising has become more important than ever, and it’s clear that Canadians are willing to donate to defeat the Trudeau government.” The full quarterly financial updates will be available online at Elections.ca. The exact fundraising and donor numbers for the Conservative Party in the second quarter was $6,045,466 raised from 40,908 donors.

Hajj campaign launched with message of peace
JEDDAH: The 11th Hajj is Worship and Civilized Behavior campaign kicked off on Wednesday under the slogan “Hajj is a message of peace,” launched by Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, adviser to King Salman, governor of Makkah, and chairman of the Central Hajj Committee. The prince said that King Salman’s royal order establishing a Royal Commission for Makkah city and Holy Sites, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reflects the government’s keenness to improve these areas and provide visi-
tors with the best services. He described this move as a great development event in Makkah and the holy sites at a time when Saudi Arabia is eager to develop its capacities to serve pilgrims. Prince Khaled said: “After the commission’s first board meeting, I can say that I am optimistic about the future of Makkah and the holy sites. We look forward to manifesting in the coming years the commission’s mission and projects as well as the way these projects will be planned and implemented.”
He thanked the security men for their exceptional work and said: “I’ve been watching the security’s performance during Hajj season since I was appointed the governor of Makkah, and I grow prouder each year of what they do to serve Islam, Saudi Arabia, and humanity.” He also thanked the high and central Hajj committees for handling the reports submitted to them last year, and improving work processes and services in preparation for this year’s Hajj season.
The lira lost over 1.6 percent of its value against the dollar following Washington’s moveUS hit Turkey’s justice and interior ministers with sanctions over the case of an American pastor on trial for terrorrelated chargesANKARA: The Turkish lira on Wednesday slumped to record lows of 5.0 against the dollar as the US hit Turkey’s justice and interior ministers with sanctions over the case of an American pastor on trial for terror-related charges.
The lira lost over 1.6 percent of its value against the dollar following Washington’s move in response to Turkey keeping Pastor Andrew Brunson under house arrest. Before his move home last week, Brunson, who led a Protestant church in the Aegean city of Izmir, had spent nearly two years in jail. After reports that the US would sanction individuals over the case, the lira hit a record low of 5.01 against the dollar, before rallying slightly to 4.9. It then hit 5.0 again after
the official announcement from the White House.White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that Brunson was a “victim of unfair and unjust attention by the government of Turkey” as she announced sanctions. “At the president’s direction, the Department of the Treasury is sanctioning Turkey’s minister of justice and minister of interior, both of whom played leading roles in the arrest and detention of Pastor Brunson,” she
At least 29 people have been arrested for “economic disruption,” Iranian officials announced last weekend The plunging value of the Iranian currency and worsening economic situation has prompted a string of public protests this year LONDON: Iran’s application of the death penalty to individuals arrested during the country’s economic crisis would be in “direct breach of international law,” the world’s leading human-rights organization has said. At least 29 people have been arrested for “economic disruption,” Iranian officials announced last weekend, with many facing charges that carry the death penalty. Amnesty International on Wednesday ex-
pressed “alarm” over the arrests, saying that the application of the death penalty for nonviolent crimes would be “in direct breach of international law.” The plunging value of the Iranian currency and worsening economic situation has prompted a string of public protests this year. In an apparent attempt to be seen to be tackling the crisis, officials announced dozens of arrests and blamed unnamed “enemies” for the rial’s decline. “Amnesty International is alarmed at the judiciary’s announcement that it has charged individuals arrested in relation to the country’s economy and currency crisis with ‘corruption on earth’ (efsad-e fel arz), which
incurs the death penalty,” an Amnesty spokesperson told Arab News. “This would be in direct breach of international law, which restricts the use of the death penalty to only the ‘most serious crimes’ — those involving intentional killing. Amnesty International’s research has shown that basic fair trial guarantees are absent in death penalty cases in Iran.” The statement follows warnings from other campaign groups over the human-rights situation in Iran. “In recent weeks and months we’ve had many protests,” Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, spokesman for the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights group, told Arab News on Tuesday.
Turkey lira slumps to record lows over US sanctions in pastor case, Ankara vows to respond
told journalists. The sanctions freeze any property or assets on US soil held by the two ministers, and bar US citizens from doing business with them. US President Donald Trump and his Vice President Mike Pence had threatened Turkey with “large sanctions” last week if Brunson was not immediately released. His lawyer’s appeal for his release was rejected this week.

Danes march in Copenhagen to protest ban on wearing face veils in public
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – Around 1,300 Danes marched through Copenhagen on Wednesday in protest at a new ban on the wearing of face veils in public, accusing the government of infringing on women’s right to dress as they choose. Denmark’s parliament enacted the ban in May, joining France and some other European Union countries to uphold what some politicians say are secular and democratic values. The protesters, many wearing the niqab veil or the all-enveloping, bodylength burqa, marched from the central, left-wing district of Norrebro to Bellahoj police station on the outskirts of the capital. They formed a human chain around the station and then marched back to Norrebro before dispersing. Demonstrators, often with children in tow, chanted “no racists in our streets” and “my life, my choice” during the three-hour rally. No incidents were reported. The marchers included non-niqab-wearing Muslim women and non-Muslim Danes with faces covered.“We need to send a signal to the government that we will not bow to discrimination and a law that specifically targets a religious minority,” Sabina, 21, a niqab-garbed student, told Reuters, asking

Scientists reverse aging-associated skin wrinkles and hair loss in a mouse model
A
gene mutation causes wrinkled skin and hair loss; turning off that mutation restores the mouse to normal appearance. Source: University of Alabama at Birmingham
Summary: Researchers have reversed wrinkled skin and hair loss, hallmarks of aging, in a mouse model. When a mutation leading to mitochondrial dysfunction is induced, the mouse develops wrinkled skin and extensive, visible hair loss in a matter of weeks. When the mitochondrial function is restored by turning off the gene responsible for mitochondrial dysfunction, the mouse returns to smooth skin and thick fur, indistinguishable from a healthy mouse of the same age. Wrinkled skin and hair loss are hallmarks of aging. What if they could be reversed? Keshav Singh, Ph.D., and colleagues have done just that, in a mouse model developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “To our knowledge, this observation is unprecedented,” said Singh, a professor of genetics in the UAB School of Medicine. Importantly, the mutation that does this is
in a nuclear gene affecting mitochondrial function, the tiny organelles known as the powerhouses of the cells. Numerous mitochondria in cells produce 90 percent of the chemical energy cells need to survive. In humans, a decline in mitochondrial function is seen during aging, and mitochondrial dysfunction can drive age-related diseases. A depletion of the DNA in mitochondria is also implicated in human mitochondrial diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, age-associated neurological disorders and cancer. “This mouse model,” Singh said, “should provide an unprecedented opportunity for the development of preventive and therapeutic drug development strategies to augment the mitochondrial functions for the treatment of aging-associated skin and hair pathology and other human diseases in which mitochondrial dysfunction plays a significant role.” The mutation in the mouse model is induced when the antibiotic doxycycline is added to the food or drinking water. This causes depletion of mitochondrial DNA because the enzyme to replicate the DNA becomes inactive. In four weeks, the mice showed gray hair, reduced hair density, hair loss, slowed movements and lethargy, changes that are reminiscent of natural aging. Wrinkled skin was seen four to eight weeks after induction of the mutation, and females had more severe skin wrinkles than males. Dramatically, this hair loss and wrinkled skin could be reversed by turning off the mutation. The photos below show the hair loss and wrinkled skin after two months of doxycycline induction, and the same mouse a month later after doxycycline was stopped,
allowing restoration of the depleted mitochondrial DNA. Little change was seen in other organs when the mutation was induced, suggesting an important role for mitochondria in skin compared to other tissues. The wrinkled skin showed changes similar to those seen in both intrinsic and extrinsic aging -- intrinsic aging is the natural process of aging, and extrinsic aging is the effect of external factors that influence aging, such as skin wrinkles that develop from excess sun or long-term smoking. Among the details, the skin of inducedmutation mice showed increased numbers of skin cells, abnormal thickening of the outer layer, dysfunctional hair follicles and increased inflammation that appeared to contribute to skin pathology. These are similar to extrinsic aging of the skin in humans. The mice with depleted mitochondrial DNA also showed changed expression of four aging-associated markers in cells, similar to intrinsic aging. The skin also showed disruption in the balance between matrix metalloproteinase enzymes and their tissue-specific inhibitor -- a balance of these two is necessary to maintain the collagen fibers in the skin that prevent wrinkling. The mitochondria of induced-mutation mice had reduced mitochondrial DNA content, altered mitochondrial gene expression, and instability of the large complexes in mitochondria that are involved in oxidative phosphorylation. Reversal of the mutation restored mitochondrial function, as well as the skin and hair pathology. This showed that mitochondria are reversible regulators of skin aging and
loss of hair, an observation that Singh calls “surprising.” “It suggests that epigenetic mechanisms underlying mitochondria-to-nucleus crosstalk must play an important role in the restoration of normal skin and hair phenotype,” Singh said, who has a secondary UAB appointment as professor of pathology. “Further experiments are required to determine whether phenotypic changes in other organs can also be reversed to wildtype level by restoration of mitrochondrial DNA.” Note: Miracle Media nor printed Mouses Pictures you can see at below website Source: www.sciencedaily.com July 20, 2018 and see the pictures of 3 mouse under ...... The mouse in the center photo shows agingassociated skin wrinkles and hair loss after two months of mitochondrial DNA depletion. That same mouse, right, shows reversal of wrinkles and hair loss one month later, after mitochondrial DNA replication was resumed. The mouse on the left is a normal control, for comparison.

BCMA Sponsored Syrian family’s Journey from Syria to British Columbia
T
he Miracle Media editor in-chief (Mr. Naseer Pirzada) got a chance to interview with a Syrian Refugee family settled in Surrey. Mr. Pirzada: Thanks Br. Shawkat Hassan to arranged this meeting with this Family of Mr. Mustafa Kchkara, Mrs. Rehab Makieh and their daughter Gevara Kchkara: Let’s start to hear! Br, Mustafa would you like to brief story of your Syrian background? Mr. Mustafa: I am now 41 years old head of my family, my professional back ground in Syrian was in education did MBA and also skills of Graphic Designer and as well as handyman too. I can do painting job comfortable. Mr. Pirzada: Can you tell our readers about crisis in Syria? Mr. Mustafa: Yes Br, actually we were in serious crisis, since war
has been started in our country Syria it was a very difficult situation for everyone and specially for me, it was very hard because I lived in an area which has a large population of people who are against the regime which was the ruling our country, my city name is Latakia. We were living there and it was very hard for us because every time we want to go in and out and have to stop at checkpoint and we have to show our IDs and it was very hard life at that moment and so Government started recruiting to every youngster, he must join army and fight against other people. I don’t want to join Army in this situation because if you go in army, you will kill to others or someone will kill you. I thought well in both ways you are going to die so I decided to leave the city.
Mr. Pirzada: What other experiences you did in Syria? Mr. Mustafa: Before I left Syria, I was working in LG electronics company, I worked there for around 5 years as a marketing in the company until I left Syria. Mr. Pirzada: How you become a refuge from Syria to other country? Mr. Mustafa: As a refugee, first we migrated in Turkey, where around 3 Million peoples were settled as a refugee. It was very hard situation for every Syrian there, because you are a visitor but you don’t have the rights of the visitors. Majority of refugees lives in camp in a specific area, but who have money they can live in nearest city homes. I had a little savings money, so I got a small house at rent. With the time my saving money finished and the Turkish government
provides only food and shelter with health and education facilities to each refugee who lives in camp not to those who live on their own in central city. The people who has money they can do the business in the big cities and do small odd jobs too. Mr. Pirzada: How you came here and what procedures you did to get the refugee status in Canada? Mr. Mustafa: I was in touch with internet and found the BC Muslims Association website for the sponsorship in 2016. I emailed them and got respond in 10 days. Then continued in touch with Mr. Hassan for documentations and it took time to proceed the refugee status. Mr. Pirzada: Br Shawkat, can you say something about this sponsors status. Mr. Shawkat Hassan: Director
Social Service
Many thanks to our Muslim community in the lower mainland who supported BCMA call in December 2015 to sponsor Syrian refugees. BCMA submitted an application to become Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH). Fund raising dinner was organized and close to four hundred thousand Canadian dollars was donated or pledged. The application to become SAH was approved and BCMA sent application to sponsor 36 people in 2016, 11 people in 2017 and 20 people 2018. A total of 67 persons so far sponsored but only 6 people of the refugees arrived to BC. The demand to sponsor refugees is so big to handle. Unfortunately, in addition to the regular Syrian or Iraqi refugees displaced in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey there are many who have been working for many years in the Arab Gulf states and Saudi Arabia are being dismissed from their work and cannot go back to their country. Most if not all are looking for BCMA as a Muslim Association to give them safe landing into Canada. The demand is very huge with strong pressure from inside and outside Canada to sponsor relatives or friends who are also refugees. BCMA is able to sponsor only the number of refugees given by the Canadian government through SAH secretariat. Mr. Mustafa:When I received the email for my application selection I didn’t believe. After all the procedure completion Allhumdullila we arrived at Toronto Airport first then at Vancouver Airport, Mr. Hassan received us. Mr. Pirzada: After arrival in BC, what was your and your family feelings, and how you are surviving? Mr. Mustafa: We all were very delighted after a long-tensed war and terror life in Syria and then Turkey Camps. Here BCMA members welcomed us and arranged first temporary residence in Hotel in Vancouver then found a 2 Bed room suite in Surrey. As per Canadian Immigration policy for refugees, the private sponsors will be responsible at least one year for their shelter and foods. Mr. Pirzada: What you are expected by the Miracle’s readers and by the Muslim and local community members. Mr. Mustafa: I would like to request everyone through the Miracle Newspaper, that I have the skills of MBA, Graphic Designer and knows the Building paintings skills. 20 wome n Your Qualities & Strengths Letting go of grudges and bitterness ! Dhul Qadah 20,1439H August 3, 2018

t can be easy to appreciate your strengths - your sense of humor, your generosity, or your analytical skills. And it is also easy to get down on yourself for having various personality traits you perceive as weaknesses - maybe you are quick to anger or always running late. Instead of getting down on yourself for your weaknesses try instead to reframe them as something positive - as traits that make you uniquely you. •Make a list of all your strengths. Include the big ones that are huge components of your personality, like your patience, all the way down to the small things you are good at. See how many great qualities you contribute to the world! •Now make a list of all your weaknesses. Write down things you don’t like about your personality or you feel are negative traits. •Look at your list of weaknesses. Think about ways you could see those weaknesses as positives. For example, say one of your weaknesses is that you think you talk too much. You could reframe this to a positive as, “It’s easy for me to express my opinion.” “I’m too sensitive” could be reframed as, “I have empathy for others.” Stay true to yourself. To appreciate and accept yourself, it is important to know who you are. It may be helpful to identify your personal values. Knowing what is important to you and making decisions based on your personal values helps you be authentic and appreciate your true self. Make sure your values are your own and you are not simply taking on the values of your friends or family. Figure out what is important to you. •Explore which values are important to you and write them down. A concrete list of your values may help you recognize when you are being inauthentic to yourself and your values. •You may feel like other people may not like you if they see the “real” you. It may be helpful for you to explore these feelings with someone you trust or by writing in a journal. Determine when you feel most yourself
and when you feel the need to pretend to be someone else, and explore the differences between those situations. •If you feel you cannot be yourself around certain friends or family, perhaps because you fear being made fun of, then it may be a sign that you fear rejection about revealing your true self. •The first step to changing your behavior is noticing when you do it. Pay attention and later, spend some time reflecting on what triggered your behavior in a particular situation. It may take a while for you to feel comfortable enough to be your authentic self around other people. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t do it right away. Avoid comparisons. Comparing yourself to others can leave you feeling discouraged and judgmental. Remember, you generally see only a piece of others’ everyday lives (particularly on social media). Comparing yourself to someone will only set you up for disappointment and feeling bad about yourself. •Measure your growth by comparing yourself to who you were in the past instead. For example, think about your life 10 years ago. Has it changed? Have you acquired new skills, new relationships, or left dysfunctional life patterns behind? If you feel you have stagnated, take some steps to make some positive changes in your life. •You can also look at your life now and imagine what you would like it to look like five or 10 years in the future. If you dream of getting a promotion at work in a few years, for example, what can you do today to start making progress towards your goals? Working toward a goal can help you to feel more self-worth and in control of your life. It’s never too later to start living your own dreams!! For Info:email at shabnam@skcounselling.ca

By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker ords have power that can cause hurt and happiness beyond actions. Criticism and applause are remembered with lasting effects. When we develop emotional wounds, these can cause bitterness and anger which can develop into vengeance and haunt us for life. Thinking about our traumatic experiences can help us overcome these feelings to live a fulfilled life. We need to practise forgiveness and embrace peace, hope, happiness, gratitude, joy, and content. What is forgiveness? Forgiveness can have many meanings to different people. It is a conscious decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge. By releasing these emotions, we can embrace the positive feelings of a fulfilled life. The act that caused you hurt and anger might always stay with you even after forgiveness. The difference is the absence of the grip of that event that holds on to you and controls your emotions. Freedom does not mean excusing someone’s behavior or forgetting the harm that was caused or seeking revenge to make it an even exchange of emotions. Forgiveness is a decision to bring peace to that event and understanding the circumstances behind it. Forgiveness is acknowledging the event and learning from it. Find out what forgiveness means to you and what would help you become a peaceful person. How to achieve forgiveness •Recognize the value of forgiveness and how it can improve your life
•Identify what needs healing and who needs to be forgiven and for what •Consider joining a support group or seeing a counselor •Acknowledge your emotions about the harm done to you and how they affect your behavior, and work to release them. •Choose to forgive the person who’s offended you •Move away from your role as victim and release the control and power the offending person and situation have had in your life Benefits of forgiveness •Healthier relationships •Improved mental health •Less anxiety, stress and hostility •Lower blood pressure •Fewer symptoms of depression •A stronger immune system •Improved heart health •Improved self-esteem Info:asmashums@gmail.com

Teenage Pakistani girls score world record after climbing Manglesser peak
Three young girls from Pakistan have earned themselves a world record by scaling a 6,080-metre Manglessar peak in the Shimshal valley in Karakoram mountain range. 13-year-old Amina Hanif, 14-year-old Maryam Bashir and 15-year-old Siddiqa Batool hailing from the Hushey valley of Gilgit-Baltistan are granddaughters of famous mountaineer Little Karim. Accompanied by their grandfather on the incredible yet arduous summit along with nine other climbers and four foreigners, the girls set foot on the Manglesser peak on July 24. Talking to a local newspaper after they completed their journey, the girls said, “If our grandfather did not motivate and encourage us we could not
have made history and become young female climbers in the mountaineering world.” “This is the start of our career and in future we wish to scale the world’s loftiest peak Mount Everest and K2, the second,” Amina said. The trio started their expedition on July 16 and reached atop the Manglessar peak on July 24, their father said. Their grandfather Little Karim, a globally-renowned mountain climber, said that he launched this campaign to encourage more women from GilgitBaltistan to take interest in mountaineering. “It will no doubt create mountaineering and climbing trend among women in Baltistan as they are brave and hardworking,” he hoped. New Zealand Cricket turns down offer to tour Pakistan
New Zealand Cricket has turned down a request from the PCB to tour Pakistan later this year for a T20I series because of security concerns. New Zealand are set to travel to the UAE to play Pakistan for a full tour that is likely to comprise three Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is in October-November, even though the fixtures are not announced yet. The PCB had hoped to convince New Zealand to play the T20I leg of the tour in Pakistan.“At the end of the day it came down to following the advisory and the security reports we’d obtained.” NZC chairman Greg Barclay told Newshub. “There’s no doubt they (Pakistan Cricket Board) are disappointed. I think they saw a tour by a country like New Zealand as being a great precedent for them to start to build an international programme back in Pakistan. “So they’re disappointed but they’re good guys, we get on really well with Pakistan, and I think they’re fully accepting of the decision that we’ve reached.” NZC had received a request to tour Pakistan earlier this year and was going to consult with security providers, the government, and the players. Since the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009, Pakistan have played most of their home games in the UAE. Zimbabwe broke the deadlock in May 2015
when they toured for a short limited-overs series, which was marred by a blast near the Gaddafi Stadium. A World XI side led by Faf du Plessis, comprising a number of current internationals toured the country for three T20Is in September 2017. In April this year, a depleted West Indies squad also toured Pakistan for three T20Is in as many days. In between, Lahore and Karachi have hosted a few PSL matches.New Zealand last toured Pakistan in 2003, just a year after a suicide bombing outside their team hotel in Karachi had cut their tour short.“I can’t comment on the decision process that the West Indies went through, perhaps some of the timings may have been different as well,” Barclay said of West Indies’ decision to tour. “I just know that we went through a very thorough process and I’m comfortable with the decision that we got to. “We’re very sympathetic to the plight they find themselves in, we’re a member of the ICC, we’re very aware that the ICC are trying to facilitate more international cricket in Pakistan and we’re very supportive of that.” Although they were given three months to analyse the situation, NZC had not sent any of their representatives to Pakistan to conduct any personal checks. Canada expands its biometrics screening program
acilitating travel to Canada while keeping Canadians safe July 30, Ottawa, ON – The Government of Canada is committed to the safety and security of all Canadians and to the integrity of our immigration system. On July 31, 2018, all nationals from countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East are required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) if they are applying for a Canadian visitor visa, a work or study permit, or permanent residence. Accurately establishing identity is an important part of immigration decisions and helps keep Canadians safe. For more than 20 years, biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) have played a role in supporting immigration screening and decision-making in Canada. Canada currently collects biometrics from in-Canada refugee claimants and overseas refugee resettlement applicants,
individuals ordered removed from Canada and individuals from 30 foreign nationalities applying for a temporary resident visa, work permit, or study permit. Biometric screening has proven effective in protecting the safety and security of Canadians and the integrity of the immigration system. Systematic fingerprint verification allows border service officers to confirm a traveller’s identity and better manage traffic flow at the border. This will in turn make international travel a convenient, predictable and secure process for travellers with genuine identities. The Government of Canada has taken several steps to make giving biometrics easier for travellers, including only requiring that temporary residents provide their biometrics once every 10 years (those applying for a visa, or a study or work permit). Canada is also increasing its Visa Application Centre
(VAC) presence in the next 2 years. Canada has one of the largest VAC networks in comparison with other countries; more than 97% of applicants can access a VAC in their country of residence. By November 2019, Canada will have a network of at least 157 VACs in 105 countries. In addition, applicants living in the U.S. can use the extensive network of 135 U.S. Application Support Centers for biometrics collection. In advance of additional VACs opening this summer and fall, some Canadian embassies in Europe will offer interim biometrics collection service points for applicants who have applied online or by mail and have received a Biometrics Instruction Letter. Please see: To support biometrics expansion, Canada is opening new Visa Application Centres and offering interim services at some missions. More than 70 countries are using biometrics
in immigration and border management. Canada’s Migration 5 partners – the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and New Zealand – have implemented biometric programs; so have the 26 Schengen states in Europe, and other countries around the world like Japan, South Africa and India. Earlier, former cricket star Imran Khan s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had won majority in the country s general elections and is ready to form the central government. KARACHI: While claiming that his party always struggled for strengthening democracy and parliament, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said the PPP will use the parliamentary forum to advance its ideology and ideals. Bilawal, who will be beginning his parliamentary career, was addressing a luncheon held at Bilawal House for the newly-elected PPP parliamentarians from across the country on Tuesday. The PPP stalwarts like Raja Pervez Ashraf, Faryal Tal-
pur, Sherry Rehman, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Khursheed Shah, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Senator Raza Rabbani and Murad Ali Shah were present on the occasion. Bilawal said despite difficulties and pre-poll pressures on candidates and workers, the PPP fared better in the 2018 general elections than 2013. “Some opposition parties were considering boycotting the new parliament but the PPP convinced them to join the parliament and fight for democracy, which is a victory for democrats though we had also reservations
over the election process,” he added. He said the PPP has to focus on delivery in Sindh, where the party has once again secured majority.“We are entering a new era where good governance and better performance should be the hallmark of the new provincial government. “We cannot let down the people who sent us to assemblies as we are facing great challenges on international and economic fronts while other political parties are taking extreme positions on key issues,” he added.
