hy was the midnight of 15th August 1947 chosen as the date & time for Indian Independence? We can divide the above question into 3 sub-questions:

Why 1947?

The awakening of masses by Gandhi and the activities of Bose behind the scenes (of strengthening Indian National Army) which had intensified during 1940s were already a cause of concern for the British.

By the time the World War II had come to an end in 1945, the British were financially weak

The victory of Labour party in the Britain elections of 1945 was received very well by our freedom fighters because the Labour party had promised to work on granting independence to English colonies including India.

Lord Wavell initiated talks with Indian leaders for Indian Independence and inspite of several disagreements and disruptions, it was gaining momentum and in Feb 1947, Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the last viceroy of India to oversee the transfer of power.

The plan initially was to transfer power from Britain to India by June 1948. Immediately after assuming power in Feb 1947, Lord Mountbatten had begun a series of talks with Indian leaders for a consensus. But things were not so simple especially due to conflicts between Jinnah & Nehru on the matter of partition.

Jinnah’s demand for a separate nation had instigated large scale communal disturbances across India and upon passing of each day, situation was going out of control. This was cer-

tainly not something expected by Mountbatten and hence such circumstances forced him to prepone the date of independence by almost an year, from 1948 to 1947. It was decided in the meeting (related to independence & partition) on June 3, 1947 which was aptly titled “June 3 Mountbatten plan”.

Why 15th August?

It was Lord Mountbatten who had personally decided the date of Aug 15 because he had considered that date to be “very lucky” for his career. During the World War II, it was on Aug 15, 1945 (Japan timezone) that the Japanese Army had surrendered before him (Lord Mountbatten was the commander of the allied forces).

Why Midnight?

When the date of independence was decided in “June 3 plan” and announced to public, there was an outrage among astrologers across the country because 15-Aug-1947 was an “unfortunate & unholy” date according to astrological calculations. Alternative dates were suggested but Lord Mountbatten was adamant on Aug 15 (since it was his lucky date). As a work around, the astrologers suggested the midnight

‘Pakistan’s destiny lies in power of vote,’ Mamnoon says at 72nd Independence Day event

Pakistanis are celebrating the 72nd Independence Day with traditional zeal and fervour, with commemorative ceremonies held in cities across the country. The day-long festivities began with thanksgiving prayers and the hoisting of the national flag at all important public buildings in the country, which had been decorated with bunting and lights ahead of August 14.The day began with a 31-gun salute in the capital, followed by 21-gun salutes in all four provincial capitals.

The main ceremony was hosted at Islamabad’s Jinnah Convention Centre, where President Mamnoon Hussain hoist-

ed the national flag. The ceremony was also attended by caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk, the three chiefs of the armed forces and other notable personalities and foreign dignitaries.

Flag hoisting ceremonies were held in the provincial capitals as well as district headquarters.

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid on Wednesday submitted the nomination papers for Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan’s bid for prime minister to the National Assembly secretary on Wednesday.

Rashid, while speaking to the media in Islamabad, said he was Khan’s nominator for the post, while Fakhar Imam was

the guarantor.“We submitted the papers for Imran Khan’s nomination,” Rashid confirmed. The AML chief said that Imran Khan would be selected as prime minister on Aug 17 and would be sworn in as prime minister the following day at an oath taking ceremony. Khan was nominated as the PTI’s pick for PM during a meeting of senior party leaders at Banigala, according to spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry.

Meanwhile, the PPP and PML-N have locked horns over the joint opposition’s nominee for prime minister.

Although the 11-party opposition alliance, comprising the PML-N, PPP and others, had earlier unanimously accepted PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif as their nominee for the post, PPP’s Khursheed Shah told Dawn on Tuesday that the party had reservations over the nomination, which it had conveyed to the PML-N.But, in what appeared to be a political tactic, he tried to downplay the matter, describing it as “trivial”.He said the PPP was in contact with the PML-N and the issue would be resolved amicably.

PML-N’s Mushahidullah Khan today dismissed suggestions that the party change their nominee for PM.

PTI’s Asad Qaiser, Qasim Suri elected NA speaker and deputy speaker amid opposition ruckus Salim

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf ’s (PTI) Asad Qaiser and Qasim Suri were sworn in as National Assembly (NA) speaker and deputy speaker respectively on Wednesday, beating out the joint candidates fielded by a fragile opposition alliance in a secret ballot. Qaiser, a former speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, received 176 votes to PPP stalwart and joint opposition’s candidate Khursheed Shah’s 146. Eight

votes were rejected in the tally.

The election for the post of deputy speaker was also won by a PTI candidate: Suri. He garnered 183 votes and edged out Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal’s (MMA) Maulana Asad Mehmood, who received 144 votes. After the announcement of Qaiser’s victory, the new NA speaker made a round of the opposition benches and shook hands with PPP, PML-N and MMA leaders seated in the front rows of the assembly.

Outgoing speaker Ayaz Sadiq subsequently administered the speaker’s oath to Qaiser amidst loud chants of vote ko izzat do by PML-N lawmakers. Meanwhile, the oath to the new deputy speaker was administered by the new speaker and his fellow PTI leader, Qaiser. Imran Khan (prime minister in waiting) vowed to realize Quaid-eAzam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal’s vision for Pakistan.

In his message to the nation on the occasion of Independence Day, he tweeted, “14 Aug 2018: On this Independence Day, I am filled with the greatest optimism. Despite our grave economic crises, due to corruption and cronyism, I know if we are united in our resolve, we will rise to the challenge and Pakistan will become the great nation envisaged by our Quaid and Iqbal.”

Imran urged the nation to celebrate August 14 with full fervour, “especially as we are now moving towards Naya Pakistan & reclaiming Jinnah’s vision InshaAllah,” he had tweeted.

During the recent general elections, the Pakistanis had the golden opportunity to get rid of the ongoing status quo or else stay stuck in ‘quagmire of muddy political past.’

The said election has strengthened the democratic norms in Pakistan.

On the Election Day, the turnout was impressive: Approximately, 30 million new voters had exercised their right to vote for the first time. The educated voters preferred going forward together to a peaceful political stability; they rejected the corrupt elite and elected the right candidates. They are well aware that a positive change would fetch new opportunities leading to economic well being of all on equality basis regardless of creed,

Interestingly, the elected Parliamentarians have just finished with the ceremony of having taken the required oaths of office. August 15 is set for election of Speaker and deputy speaker followed by election of prime minister on 18th August.

The PTI chairman Imran khan is most likely to be sworn in as prime minister. The federal and provincial cabinets’ formation as per rules will be taking place soon after.

But there will be 45 days probationary period for all to prove their efficiency.

In the past, the two political parties have been taking turns, but Pakistan Tehrik e Insaf (PTI) finally appears to be ending the political empire of the two parties.

A corruption-free Pakistan is a dream yet to come true. If the PTI is successful in delivering what it has promised, then we can say the status quo of traditional politics marred by mega corruption is almost over.

Despite the ongoing odds, there is a pretty good reason to celebrate 14th August: 1-Pakistan became a reality on this day (71 years ago) enabling its citizens to breathe as a free society.

2-Pakistan had the opportunity to redesign its governance system according to the ground realitiesbut the inefficient corrupt elite had messed it up beyond repair.

Consequently, the feel of freedom began to fade away sooner than expected as the disease of corruption seeped into the inherited flawed governing system making it the worst case scenario. In fact, this has been a major obstacle in the smoother governance and administration.

Now, there is a great opportunity for the PTI to prove its worth: If the

fairly and lawfully, there will be no one above the law; wrong doers have to face the music; there will be accountability at all levels with certainty.

Imran Khan’s international recognition as an icon: Foreign heads of States have congratulated him upon his victory.

Good gesture: Absolutely, there is no room for grudges, so no politics of vengeance during PTI era. This has been declared by Chairman Imran Khan.

Challenge: If the PTI’s government fails to deliver on their promises, there will be a comeback of the status quo forces (rogue regimes) one after the other depending on their turns of course.

Priority Issues to be addressed: The past governments have been criminally negligent in providing the people with basic amenities including clean drinking water, adulterated food, fake medicines artificial milk endangering one’s daily life.

National education system needs be looked after closely. More hospitals should be providing quality care to all on equality basis.

Rivers water originating from Kashmir is being robbed off by the upper riparian India just ahead of its flowing through the low riparian Pakistan posing a big threat to Pakistani agriculture. The illegal activity is responsible for the energy crises leading to load shedding.

Also, the energy crisis has been responsible for choking Pakistani manufacturing at a large scale.

Major blame goes to the past inefficient regimes/criminal politicians/ rogue anti Pakistan elements; they have been involved in actively opposing the KB dam project just to please the enemy country. Chief Justice took a suo motto notice and

introducing a fund to build Bhasha / Mohmand Dams.

This indicates that the inefficient governments in the past have been wasting precious time in the hot pursuit of political advantages through abetting and helping the looters of national exchequer.

The PTI government is bound to take care of nationally important issues of crucial nature: The Prime Minister(in waiting) Imran Khan plans to visit China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the USA, Afghanistan and a few other countries to improve international relations.

Other recommendations include: • Since Pakistani fertile land is fit enough for producing food grain and cotton crops, the farmers must be facilitated with funds and resources for enhancing the agricultural produce.

•Working on increasing exports and decreasing imports will generate the needed revenue in the foreign currency.

•Properly guarding our national exchequer with zero tolerance policy applicable to all thieves and those responsible for misappropriation.

Almost all Pakistanis are hoping for a positive change ahead as promised by the PTI. However, the parliamentarians and the general public should be on the same page to achieve the desired change.

Please remember a positive media role in educating the masses is of prime importance.

Beyond doubt, this Independence Day is the best opportunity for all Pakistanis to come onboard with the new government offering a helping hand to promote a corruption free Pakistan.

‘Confusion of Human Rights’.

By: Gulshan Aalani Saudi Arabia imposed sanction on Canada, after Canadian Gov. criticized Saudi Arabia for violation of Human Rights. Unbelievable! Did we catch the American virus of dictatorship and disrespect of others?

Criticizing and meddling in such country that is number one law abiding of the Divine law of ethics and moral values, and their remarkable Divinely based religious commitments cannot be overlooked and portray it as violation of human rights.

Such opposition proves our own lack of understanding of Scriptural religion and its ethics and moral values.

It is a sad situation-blown out of proportion. Mainly based on emotional issue of alleged ‘violation of Human Rights’.

In reality it is not about violation of human rights, it is the fake news, using the fake ID of H. R. Activist, promoting Islamophobia.

Such are the Dajjali-anti-Christ anti-Islam tactics. I myself have

experienced such malice hatred of Islam, Muslims and the Quran when I converted to Islam.

Badawi and his wife are fake Muslimsanti-Islam like I was not long ago: they have insulted and abused Islam and its practices in the name of wrong claim of human rights violation.

Mentioned in the news paper articles: globalnews.ca & letter by Mr. Yasser Khan in Al-Ameen: Mrs. Badawi provoking islamophobia: saying:“as a refugee in Quebec and Canada I have noticed the far growth of Islamist groups loyal to the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Saudi Clergy imposing the Burqa and enforcing Niqab on girls and women as political flags to mark jihadi territory”.

“It is for this reason that on the first day as a Canadian I have raised the issue of banning the Burqa and Niqab in Ontario as I feel Premier Ford is a man who will listen to my plea and end the war by deception being waged by Islamists Canadian values”.

Such malicious hateful demands from the ignorant one, asking to persecute Muslim women for practicing their religious rights is not Canadian value.

I don’t think P. M. Trudeau is aware of the true story of Badawi’s Islamophobia, so he can’t be blamed for the ‘war’ of ignorance.

He should just realize the facts of true reason for the punishment and accept that criminals-hate mongers of Divine should learn the concept of good and evil and the truth of true Creator-GOD and HIS law that is different than the cultic law of human-false gods.

I hope Saudis would calm down and reduce the Sanctions. No need to impose sanctions of such huge Volume. We the Muslims and Christians don’t want the separation as we are intertwined religiously and share the same Scriptural laws and are ‘One community’ including our brethren Jewish people and Bani Israel..

Let us ignore the fake Muslims and not fall for their evil tactics of creating fight to separate us. Let us pray for the best and calm down as we are Canadians the ‘peace makers’.

Tensions between Canada and Saudi Arabia.

By:Dr. Mohamed Elmasry, Waterloo, Ontario I do not agree with the way our federal government is handling Canada’s recent human rights dispute with Saudi Arabia.

When the Saudi kingdom removed restrictions on women driving and allowed them to attend concerts and

sporting events, Canada did not offer a single word of support. When the country’s movie theaters were opened to the public, again no recognition from Canada.

If the federal Liberals want to address human rights issues in Saudi Arabia, I feel they should have done so with greater respect and intelligence. Why didn’t Foreign Affairs minister Chrystia Freeland call the Saudi Ambassador directly about Canada’s concerns?

We do not know yet who actually did it, or if Freeland and PM Trudeau approved the wording in advance, but to publicly Tweet a demand that another state “immediately” free any individuals jailed under its jurisdiction is a big mistake.

If this is really a matter of voicing Canadian values to the world, then why is our government not advocating for the human rights of Palestinians in Israeli jails, or confined to Occupied Territories?

Please, enough with the double standards!

Justice, unfortunately, takes time to prevail; it took Canada years to redress the wrongs done to Maher Arar, for example.

The Liberals’ social media response to Saudi human rights issues will not achieve anyone’s freedom – and some sectors of the Canadian economy are already paying the price.

More than 1,000 children - and possibly many more - were molested by hundreds of Roman Catholic priests in six dioceses in the US state of Pennsylvania, while senior church officials took steps to cover it up, according to a landmark grand jury report released on Tuesday.

The grand jury said it believes the real number of abused children might be in the thousands since some records were lost and victims were afraid to come forward. The report said more than 300 clergy committed the abuse over a period decades, beginning in the mid-1950s.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said the two-year probe found a systematic cover-up by senior church officials in Pennsylvania and at the Vatican.

“The cover-up was sophisticated. And all the while, shockingly, church leadership kept records of the abuse and the cover-up. These documents, from the dioceses’ own ‘Secret Archives,’ formed the backbone of this investigation,” he said at a news conference in the city of Harrisburg.

‘We won’t survive’: Residents speak of ongoing battle in Ghazni

As Afghan security forces backed by US airpower continue to battle Taliban fighters in the eastern city of Ghazni, hundreds of civilians have been displaced with little means to survive.

Fighting raged for a fifth-straight day on Tuesday following the brazen attack by the armed group that threatens the control of the strategic city, about 150km south of the capital, Kabul.

While information has been scarce, an estimated 400 people have been killed so far, including about 150 civilians, according the UN and the Afghan ministry of defence.

“When the fighting intensified, we knew we would die if we didn’t leave our home to travel to Kabul,” Ghazni resident Yassan Yassan, 21, told Al Jazeera, adding the Taliban had cut electricity and water supplies across the city.

Recalling the violence, Yassan said: “I witnessed a rocket landing on a group of people attempting to escape. All of them died.”

She also said the Taliban set government buildings on fire and blocked several areas including the Kabul-Kandahar highway.

“We had to pass through dangerous areas to get to Kabul, we witnessed the worst clashes between the Taliban and security forces,”

EID UL ADHA An Islamic Joyous Occasion

This celebration takes place on the tenth of the 12th Muslim month (Dhul Hijja) and marks the end of the pilgrimage or Hajj.

It is the “Feast of Sacrifice” which is also known as Baqri-Eid (the “Cow Festival”) because its most important feature is the sacrifice of an animal (cow, goat, sheep, or other appropriate beast) in commemoration of the ram sacrificed by Abraham in place of his son. The sacrificial animal should be healthy and free of defects and be more than one year old. This requirement can also be accomplished by donating the equivalent cost of the sacrificial animal to a reputable charity e.g., Islamic Relief, Human Appeal International or Muslim Aid which arranges for its distribution throughout the Muslim world where there is greatest need. The command to perform sacrifices is given in Surah 22.36 and although no specific day is fixed in the Qur’an the sacrificing of animals was already practiced on the last day of the pilgrimage by the pre-Islamic Arabs and this practice has been duly retained.

On this day Muslims throughout the world symbolize their willingness to sacrifice their life and property in the name of God and for the cause of Islam. Celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning.

Community prayers are held, new clothes are worn, and presents are offered. Families visit the deceased at the cemeteries and offer meat and food to the poor and needy.

It is a family occasion and great emphasis is placed on all members of the extended family to support the festivities with their presence. Fasting on Eid-ul-Adha is forbidden as it defeats the whole purpose of the festival, because food is to be eaten on this day with a cheerful heart in remembrance of God’s bounty and provision for mankind. Eid Al-Adha, during the Hajj season, lasts for three days.

Eid Al-Adha (also known as the Greater Bairam) during the Hajj season. These celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning.

It is a highly recommended sunnah to attend these Prayers. It is also sunnah to hold them outside of the mosque, such as in a park, if possible. It is sunnah to make

ghusl (cleansing of the body) before attending, and to wear one’s best clean clothes, even new clothes if possible. Men (but not women) should also apply perfume before the Prayers.

Women who are unable to perform salah (ritual Prayer) should attend the `Eid Prayer and sit in the back behind those who are praying so that they can enjoy the festivities of the day.

The Sunnah Action On The Day Of Eid ul Adha 1. One should wake up early.

2. It is Mustahab for those who are sacrificing an animal not to eat anything on the morning of Eid-ul-Adha till they sacrifice the animal and partake of the meat of the sacrificed animal.

3. One should make Ghusal, wear new clothes and use Itr before going for Eid Salaah.

4. One should try and be as early as possible in the Masjid or Eid Gah (open ground for performing Eid Salaah).

5. One should read the Takbeer softly while going to the Masjid or Eid Gah on the day of Eid 6. The Takbeer should be read loudly on the day of Eid-ul-Adha.

7. It is preferable that one uses different routes in traveling to and from the Masjid or Eid Gah. The Time Of Eid Salaah 1. The time of Eid Salaah begins just after sunrise and continues up to Zawaal.

2. No Nafil Salaah should be read before the Eid Salaah.

3. No Azaan or Iqaamah is given for Eid Salaah.

Remember the Method Of Performing The Eid Salaah In general, when praying any Salah, always follow the Imam in prayer. Do not make your movements (i.e. bowing, prostrating, etc.) before he does or different from him.

Eid prayer consists of two units (Rakat in Arabic, singular is Raka). The main difference in the way this prayer and any other prayer of two Rakat is performed is the number of Takbirs that are done.

Takbirs is an the Arabic word referring to when “Allahu Akbar” is said and the hands are raised to the ears.

Make an intention of doing two Rakat behind the Imam for Eid prayer along with six additional Takbirs.

A FEW QURBANI RULES

A. The meat of an animal which has seven shares (i.e. cow, ox, bull, buffalo, camel) must be equally distributed by weighing it properly.

However, if the head, hooves and skin are also shared, then those who receive these parts must receive less meat than those who do not receive these parts.

Q. How should one distribute the share of his or her share of Qurbani amongst family?

A. It is preferable to divide the meat into three parts. One part for one’s family, another should be distributed among friends and relatives, and the third amongst the poor and needy.

Q. Is it permissible to distribute Qurbani meat cooked at a Walima?

A. Qurbani meat may be given out cooked or uncooked. It may also be cooked and given out at a Walima.

Q. Can the Qurbani meat or skin be sold?

A. It is unlawful to sell any part of the Qurbani animal including its meat and skin.

Q. Can the meat or skin of the Qurbani animal be given as payment to the one skinning the Qurbani animal or to the butcher?

A. It is not permissible to tender the meat and skin as payment to the slaughterer, skinner or butcher for rendering their services. Their fees should be paid separately.

Q. I am doing a Nafl Qurbani for my deceased

The First Raka 1: After the Imam has said “Allahu Akbar” the first time, you should raise your hands and follow. This is the first Takbir of the prayer.

2: There will be 3 Takbirs before the Imam starts reciting Quran. Each time the Imam says “Allahu Akbar”, you should follow by raising your hands, then putting them on your sides.

3: After the third Takbir, the Imam will begin reciting the Quran. At that point, you should put your hands on your chest, with your right hand on top of the left.

4: Listen to the recitation of the Holy Quran.

The Imam will recite Surah Al Fatiha (the first Surah of the Quran) and then another Surah.

5: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Ruku (the bowing position).

6: Stand up straight when he says Sami Allahu liman Hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him), and say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” (our Lord praise be to You) in a low voice.

7: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Sujud (prostration). You will do two prostrations as in normal prayer.

The Second Raka 8: The Imam will first recite from the Holy Quran (first Surah Al Fatiha and another Surah.

9: After the recitation, before going into Ruku, there will be 3 Takbirs. Follow the Imam. Raise your hands after each “Allahu Akbar”. After the third Takbir, go into Ruku (the bowing position).

10: Stand up straight when the Imam says Sami Allah huliman Hamidah, and say “Rabbana lakal Hamd” in a low voice.

11: When the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” go into Sujud. You will do two prostrations.

12: After this, you sit for the complete Tashshahud.

13: After the Imam ends the prayer by turning to his face to the right first and saying “Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah” and then to his left and doing the same, you should follow.

14: Do not get up right away. The Imam will give a short Khutbah (speech). The Khutbah is Sunnah and it is Waajib to listen to them. There is a short break between the Khutbah. During Khutbah, all talking or reading is forbidden.

15: After Imam Khutbah say Eid greetings each others.

his part has been divided into various segments to conform to the developments that gradually took place between 1857 to1947 - the last century foothold of the British in the British India.

“Jange-e-Azadi” (War of Independence) Although the British Empire expanded, the native Indians never accepted their dominance. On May 10, 1857, Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, drawn mostly from Muslim units from Bengal, rose against the British in the Meerut garrison some 80 km from Delhi and marched to Delhi. The rising was mainly to protest against the use of the newly issued rifle bullets, alleged to have a wax sealing made of the fats of pigs that was to be removed from the teeth before use.

Since pigs are forbidden in the Islam, the Muslim soldiers resented its use and took up arms against their British masters. At Delhi, they captured the famous “Lal Qila” (Red Fort) and reinstated Bahadar Shah Zafar (the last Mughul monarch) to throne.

Soldiers in other garrisons also followed the suit and soon much of north and central India was plunged into a year-long insurrection against the British. The British reacted and laid a siege of the Fort, which continued for a while but finally the British owing to their access to artillery and large number of forces stormed the Fort. Bahadur Shah Zafar fled to Humayun’s tomb. The British plundered Delhi and killed many Indian soldiers (and civilians) and artillery was set up in the main mosque in the city to bombard suspected localities, specially the homes of the Muslim nobility. The British forces also arrested Bahadur Shah and days after the arrest, a British officer William Hodson shot Shah’s sons Mirza Moghul, Mirza Khizr Sultan, and Mirza Abu Bakr and shamefully presented their heads to the Shah.

They also increased the number of British soldiers in relation to native and allowed only British soldiers to handle artillery. In 1877 Queen Victoria took the title of Empress of India.

Bahadur Shah was exiled to Rangoon, in Burma where he died in 1862, finally bringing the Mughal dynasty to an end. Although the “Jange-e-Azadi” (Liberation War) was brutally quelched, the spark for independence and throwing away the yoke of slavery at the hands of the British had been ignited.

While the War of Independence had many repercussions, the intolerance towards the

Muslims by the British increased manifold and the Muslims felt deprived and left out in fields of education and representation in government service. Attacks by Hindu fundamentalists against religious conversion, cow killing, and the preservation of Urdu in Arabic script deepened their fears of minority

status.

In order to keep the Muslims in the mainstream, rose Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and launched a movement for Muslim regeneration that culminated in the founding of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875 (later renamed Aligarh Muslim University in 1921). Its objective was to educate Muslims by emphasizing the compatibility of Islam with western knowledge.

On 30 December 1906 the All-India Muslim League was founded to safeguard the interests of the Muslims. A delegation also met with the viceroy, Gilbert John Elliot, seeking special considerations in government service and electorates. This had positive effect and in 1911 When King-Emperor George V visited India, he announced the reversal of the partition of Bengal and the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to present day New Delhi.

Jinnah and Pakistan Movement Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who had initially joined the Congress was grossly dissatisfied with the Congress attitude towards Muslims and thus joined the Muslim League in 1913.

It was with his efforts that Congress recognized the separate position of the Muslims and the Muslims’ demand for a separate electorate as a part of the Lucknow Pact.

However the Hindu prejudice against the Muslims could not be hidden for long and the publication of Nehru Report (1928) was a great setback to Lucknow Pact, since the Nehru Report negated all its clauses. It became evident that Congress and Hindus wanted to become the ruler of India on the basis of numerical strength and make Muslims their subjects. This was not acceptable to Muslims since they had ruled India for centuries and after British subjugation, they were again to fall under the Hindus as their subjects. Jinnah therefore refused to accept the report and presented his famous 14 Points to solve the political problems in India.

The Muslims wished that their separate identity should be recognized and provided constitutional safeguards to protect their rights. It was then that the first proponents of independent Muslim nation began to appear. Among the first of these was writer/ philosopher Allama Iqbal, who felt that a separate nation for Muslims was essential in an otherwise Hindu-dominated subcontinent. The cause found a leader in Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who became known as Father of the Nation and eventually persuaded

On 14 August 1947, just 10 minutes before midnight, All India Radio (AIR) broadcast its last programme and thereafter, a song composed by Khawaja Khurshid Anwar was aired by the Lahore radio station. In the meantime Choudhary Rahmat Ali a Cambridge student coined the word “PAKISTAN” for a would-be Muslim country, which was published on 28th January 1933 in the pamphlet “Now or Never.” He made the name an acronym of the different states/homelands/regions, which broke down into: P(Punjab), A(Afghania - a reference to the North West Frontier Province), K( Kashmir), S(Sindh) and TAN(BalochisTAN), thus forming “’PAK - STAN’”.

An “i”’ was later added to the the name to ease pronunciation, producing “PAKISTAN.” The Lahore Resolution The British Government under the new constitution held the elections in 1937, in which Congress gained majority and formed government in six large provinces. In connivance with the government, Hindus started persecuting the Muslims and Hindi was introduced instead of Urdu. The introduction of “Bande Matram”, the Hindus’ national anthem did the rest. Therefore, the Muslim League decided to ask for a separate homeland for themselves as by now it was clear that both Hindus and Muslims could not co-exist under one flag. In the 27th annual session on 23 March 1940 at Lahore, the Muslim League under Jinnah demanded a separate homeland for the Muslims of Indian sub-continent. Thereafter, Muslims all over India were asked to join Muslims League to safe guard their identity. In the meantime the 2nd world War had already started and the British government wanted whole hearted Indian support, therefore the Viceroy promised that the constitution would be framed in consultation with representatives of the people after the war.

In 1942 Sir Stafford Cripps proposed dominion status to India under British Crown.

While Congress rejected the proposal since it wanted full control over the affairs of the government, Muslim League rejected it since it didn’t promise a separate homeland for them. Thereafter between 1942-45 many attempts were made to break the deadlock, but the Congress refused to accept the separate identity for the Muslims. This further united the Muslims, which resulted into land slide victory for Muslims in 1945-46 elections. It clearly showed that Muslims were a separate entity and that their demand for a separate homeland was just.

The Final Days The one year period between 1946 till partition of India was very confusing, disturbing and crucial for the future of the Muslims.

The British now realized that Muslims were a powerful entity and could not be ignored.

But at the same time they never wanted to history when a new nation was carved out of the British India after a long and tiring struggle of Muslims of India. For years since 711 AD, when Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded the Indian sub-continent, Muslims had been the rulers till subjugated by the British in 1857.

Therefore, the independence in 1947 from the British yoke was a God-given opportunity to live as per the aspirations of Islamic values.

From 1947 till date, Pakistan’s history has seen many ups and downs, finally losing half of it in 1971. The history of Pakistan can easily be divided into roughly 10-years brackets, each having own peculiarities and repercussions on its future.

After the failure of a provisional government in 1946, where Congress and League members could not sit together, on 20 February 1947 the British Prime Minister Lord Attlee declared that British government would transfer power to people of subcontinent

by June 1947. However the new Viceroy Lord Mountbatten assessed that there was no hope for a political reconciliation and only solution was division of British India into two independent states; Bharat (India) for Hindus and Pakistan for Muslims. On June3, 1947, the partition of British India and establishment of Pakistan on 14th August 1947 was announced.

End of an Empire With the creation of Pakistan on 14 August 1947, the British Indian Empire faded into the history. But left behind many scars that still haunt peace and stability in the region.

Kashmir being the major dispute because of which not only peace in the region is unattainable but has brought India and Pakistan face to face on a number of occasions.

The latest escalation in year 2002 almost brought the two nations at brink of war and at a nuclear flash point. By: Mohammad Taha On August 12, was another important milestone in the history of Al-Ihsan Educational Foundation. For the second time, a group of students commenced their Dawra of Hadith, the last year if the Aalimiyya program, also known as the Aalim Course. This group of students consists of 3 boys and 6 girls, an accomplishment which, besides Ontario, has never been completed anywhere in Canada.

The program began when Mufti Aasim Rashid, founder and president of Al-Ihsan welcomed all the guests and gave them an overview of the program. This was followed by an inspiring talk by special guest Mufti Saiyed Muslihudeen Sahab (hafizahullah) (Shaykh al-Hadith Darul Uloom Dewsbury), who spoke regarding about the virtue and importance of the knowledge of hadith.

Mufti Aasim Sahab then addressed the congregation, and spoke regarding important ongoing issues in the Muslim

world, and how they should be tackled.

The hounourable guest, Hazrat Maulana Yusuf Motala (hafizahullah) (Founder and Shaykh al-Hadith Darul Uloom Bury) then conducted the main program of the event. The reverred Shaykh commenced the Sihah al-Sitta by reading the first hadith of each book. The Sihah al-Sitta consist of Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan Abi Dawood, Sunan Ibn Majah, and Sunan al-Nasai). He then addressed the crowd and conveyed some very valuable pieces of advice and wisdom.

The program was concluded with a heart-melting dua by Shaykh Mufti Muslihudeen Sahab, and a delicious lunch.

May Allah accept all the efforts of the students and teachers and volunteers that went into organizing this program and making it a success. Qirat and Azan Competition hosted by Young Ummah in Surrey Jameh Masjid

On August 11, Young Ummah has initiated another aspiring event for the youth in the lowermain land. 1st Voice of Islaam Qur’aan and Adhan competition took place in Surrey Jamaie Masjid. We had over 65 participants competing at this beautiful event. We had participants as young as 9 years and as old as 55 years participating in this fruitful event. In addition, reciting Qura’an through memory had three categories; Tier 1 (18-25), Tier 2 (13-17) and Tier 3 (9-12) years of age. Likewise, Adhan had two categories; Tier 1 (16-Up) and Tier 2 (915) years of age.

Alhumdiallah, we would like to thank all the participants and encourage everyone to keep exceling towards the book of Allah and find ways to perfect the recitation of the Holy Qur’aan in a manner where all mighty Allah SWT is content with is slave. Saudi-UAE air raids target Yemen’s Hodeidah Saudi-UAE coalition air strikes on Yemen’s Hodeida province have killed and wounded several people, medical sources said.

A spokesperson from the Houthi-affiliated health ministry said Tuesday’s attacks on the city of Duraihami killed at least 13 civilians and injured 24 others.

Doctor Youssef al-Hadri said that latest attacks hit a heavily populated area, damaging civilian infrastructure including medical facilities and mosques.

Hadri added that medics from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were being prevented from entering the city.

The ICRC for its part expressed concern with recent developments in the city and said it was still assessing the extent of the damage.

Fighting between Houthi rebels and Yemeni

government forces, backed by the SaudiUAE coalition, along the eastern outskirts of rebel-held Duraihami city has intensified in recent weeks as the two Gulf nations look to seize control of the strategic province.

Hodeidah has been under the control of the Houthis since 2014, along with other west coast ports and much of northern Yemen.

The city’s seaport was responsible for delivering 70 percent of Yemen’s imports - mostly humanitarian aid, food and fuel - before 2015.

Yet, Saudi Arabia says that the Houthis, who reportedly generate $30m to $40m a month in revenue from the port, are using it to smuggle in weapons from Iran.

The war in Yemen, the region’s poorest country, started in 2014 after the Iranaligned Houthi rebels seized control of the

capital, Sanaa, and began pushing south towards the country’s third-biggest city Aden.

Concerned by the rise of the Houthi rebels, Saudi Arabia and a coalition of Arab states launched a military offensive in 2015 in the form of a massive air campaign aimed at reinstalling the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

According to the UN, at least 10,000 people have been killed in the threeyear war - a death toll that has not been updated in years and is certain to be far higher.

In retaliation, the Houthis have launched dozens of missiles at the kingdom. Saudi

Turkey’s president fired a new salvo in the growing war of words with the United States on Tuesday, saying Ankara will boycott all American-made electronic products.

Showing no signs of backing down in the standoff, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey would stop procuring US-made iPhones and buy Korean Samsung or Turkish-made Vestel products instead.

But analysts have raised concerns of a wider contagion rippling through global markets.

On Tuesday, the Indian rupee hit a record low as a result of the economic issues in Turkey. Analysts say the financial crisis has been a long time coming and reflects Turkey’s refusal to raise interest rates to curb double-digit inflation and cool an overheated economy. Disputes with NATO ally the US have also contributed to the lira’s plunge.“Unfortunately I think Erdogan is

the extreme example of a policy-maker who is totally deluded,” Aly-Khan Satchu, CEO Rich Management, told Al Jazeera.

“It’s a losing battle. He is going to have to raise interest rates to bring the situation under control,” he added.

“He’s making it much worse.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the events are a sign the dollar is becoming obsolete as the global trade currency.“I’m confident that the grave abuse of the role of the US dollar as a global reserve currency will result over time in the weakening and demise of its role,” Lavror said at a news conference in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Lavrov added that Russia is aiming towards using national currencies to settle bilateral trade deals with Turkey and other countries.

FNPF renews certificate cycle for pensioners By: FILIPE NAIGULEVU THE Fiji National Provident Fund has revised its renewal certificate cycle for pensioners from four to six months.According to FNPF, this means that pensioners will only need to visit FNPF offices twice instead of three times a year, to submit their signed renewal certificates to ensure continuity of pension payments.

Making the announcement yesterday, FNPF chief executive officer Jaoji Koroi said the changes were made in direct response to requests made by pensioners at the FNPF annual member forums last year.

“Pensioners have highlighted the challenges faced with meeting the quarterly deadlines to ensure they receive their pension on time,” Mr Koroi said.“The four-month cycle was a control mechanism put in place to ensure we minimise the financial losses (if any) resulting from the death of a pensioner during the

period.“Many of them have told us that they found the current four-month cycle challenging because of their age and so we decided to change the renewal frequency.”

Upon arriving in Makkah, pilgrims perform the initial tawaf, which is a circular, counterclockwise procession around the Ka’bah. All the while, they state “Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk,” which means “Here I am at your service, O God, Here I am!” The tawaf is meant to awaken each Muslim’s consciousness that God is the center of their reality and the source of all meaning in life, and that each person’s higher self-identity derives from being part of the community of Muslim believers, known as the ummah. Pilgrims also perform the sa’i, which is hurrying seven times between the small hills named Safa and Marwah, reenacting the Biblical and Qurtanic story of Hajar’s desperate search for lifegiving water and food.

Next, on the first official day of Hajj (8th of Dhul-Hijjah), the two million pilgrims travel a few miles to the plain of Mina and camp there. From Mina, pilgrims travel the following morning to the plain of Arafat where they spend the entire day in earnest supplication and devotion. That evening, the pilgrims move and camp at Muzdalifa, which is a site between Mina and Arafat. Muslims stay overnight and offer various prayers there.

Then the pilgrims return to Mina on the 10th, and throw seven pebbles at a stone pillar that represents the devil. This symbolizes Abra-

ham’s throwing stones at Satan when he tried to dissuade Abraham from sacrificing his son. Then the pilgrims sacrifice a sheep, reenacting the story of Abraham,who, in place of his son, sacrificed a sheep that God had provided as a substitute. The meat from the slaughtered sheep is distributed for consumption to family, friends, and poor and needy people in the community. After the sacrifice, the pilgrims return to Makkah to end the formal rites of Hajj by performing a final tawaf and sa’i.

Muslims believe the rites of the Hajj were designed by God and taught through prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe that since the time of Adam, there have been thousands of prophets, including such well-known figures as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and David, and that Muhammad was the final prophet of God. The Hajj is designed to develop God consciousness and a sense of spiritual upliftment. It is also believed to be an opportunity to seek forgiveness of sins accumulated thoughout life. Prophet Muhammad had said that a person who performs Hajj properly “will return as a newly born baby [free of all sins].” The pilgrimage also enables Muslims from all around the world, of different colors, languages, races, and ethnicities, to come together in a spirit of universal brotherhood and sisterhood to worship the One God together. Canada’s immigration system continues Immigration Minister Visits in Masjid Al-Salaam Burnaby to innovate and deliver better service

August 13, 2018 – Ottawa, ON – Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has taken great strides towards improving its clients’ service experience. A reduction in backlogs and processing times is a cornerstone of that work.

Today the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, highlighted some of the substantial improvements that IRCC has made over the past year.

IRCC has been able to reduce backlogs significantly and make family reunification a priority, thanks to a historic multi-year immigration levels plan. For example, the Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) inventory was reduced from a high of 62,000 in May 2014, to less than 12,000 by April 2018. We are on track to meet our 2017 commitment to process at least 80% of the remaining LCP backlog by the end of 2018, and are processing new LCP permanent residence applications within 12 months.

IRCC also recently began using an improved method to estimate processing times for some new permanent residence applications.

In addition, we reduced the spousal sponsorship inventory from a high of 75,000 to 15,000 as of December 31, 2017, and are processing new spousal sponsorship applications within 12 months. To help spouses further, we extended the Open Work Permit Pilot for spousal sponsorship applicants and simplified the guides and checklists.

We also made changes to the Citizenship Act that give more flexibility to citizenship applicants to meet the requirements for Canadian citizenship and encourage more immigrants to take the path to citizenship.

This year we also helped workers and students. In June we celebrated the successful first year of the Global Skills Strategy, which has supported Canada’s economy and benefited 10,000 highly skilled workers

and more than 100 employers. We also launched the Student Direct Stream to help students from China, India, the Philippines and Vietnam get their study permits faster.

Other substantial improvements include: -We partnered on new initiatives to better support Francophone immigration, such as the creation of a new Francophone Immigration Policy hub to support the Action Plan for Increasing Francophone Immigration Outside of Quebec. We also improved Francophone immigration services at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

-We changed our medical inadmissibility policy to ensure that our immigration policies better reflect the importance that the Government places on the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

-IRCC increased its presence in China, with 7 new visa application centres.

-To continue supporting clients applying from overseas, we plan to add additional visa applications centres internationally in 2018 and 2019.

-We changed the definition of the age of dependants from “under 19” to “under 22”, to enable more families stay together in Canada.

-We invested in an innovative pilot project to employ up to 1,300 newcomers in sustainable, longterm jobs in the hotel industry.

-We continue to meet the 6-month processing time for Express Entry applications in the Federal Skilled Worker Program and Canadian Experience Class.

In the next 12 months, IRCC is planning improvements to offer clients more self-service options online.

New initiatives will be implemented, such as expansion of online applications and adding new functionalities to clients’ online accounts. We will continue to improve how we communicate anticipated processing times, so they make more sense to clients.

As we consider these improvements, we continue to actively listen to our clients and are approaching these changes with their comments and concerns in mind.

•Increasing the amount of Immigration to Canada through various Express Entry and Provincial Programs in order to meet the continuing growing demand of the Canadian Economy The Minister also encouraged the Muslim youth to undertake more government and leadership roles in order to become an integrated part of the Canadian Society. Speaking to Abdul Bakr, who is running for Vancouver City Councilor in the upcoming elections, the Minister stressed the importance of being connected with the community and constituents in order understand their needs and addressing them in a productive manner.

Have Some Mercy on Your Stomach This Eid! Eid ul Azha is that time of the year when we get to eat Kaleji for breakfast, Mutton Biryani for Lunch, Steak, Chapli Kebabs and Nihari for Dinner. Yes! We all actually consume all this food in one day. This might sound a bit uncomfortable diet plan; but that’s what people love to enjoy on Eid. Eid ul Azha revives the spirit of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) Sunnah, as Muslims all over the world sacrifice their beloved animals in the name of Allah Almighty and distribute meat among poor and needy. The consumption of meat on Eid day is usually higher than usual days. People prefer to eat Qurbani meat as if they will never be able to eat it later.

Health Issues of Eid e Qurban According to medical professionals, 100 grams of meat consumption in one day is healthy but anything beyond that can be harmful. Eating unbalanced diet on Eid ul Azha remains an issue for people as they rush to hospital on the second day complaining about the stomach ache, high cholesterol, irregular blood pressures, and lot more. Over eating is the major cause of all health related problems.

There is no doubt about the fact that Qurbani meat is a blessing of Allah Almighty as it can help you to overcome protein deficiency and red blood cells. (5 lb.) Lamb Leg 2 ounces of Almonds (Baadaam) (blanched) ½ lb. Onions (coarsely chopped) 4 Green Chillies (Hari Mirch) (chopped) 8 cloves of Garlic (Lehsan) (peeled) 4 (1”) cubes of Ginger (Adrak) (peeled and coarsely chopped) ½ tsp. Whole Cloves (Loung) 16 Cardamom Pods (Choti Ilaichi) 1 (2”-piece) of Cinnamon Stick (Dal Cheeni) 10 Black Peppercorns (Saabut Kaali Mirch) 2 tbsp. Cumin Seeds (Sufaid Saabut Zeera) (grounded) 4 tsp. of Coriander Seeds (Dhania) (grounded) ½ tsp. Cayenne Peppers 3 ½ tsp. Salt ½ tsp. Garam Masala Powder 20 fl. oz. Plain Yogurt 6 tbsp. Vegetable Oil 4 tbsp. Raisins (Kishmish) ½ ounce Almonds (Baadaam) (blanched & slivered)

Make sure that all the fat has been trimmed from the outside of the lamb leg and that most of the (parchment-like white skin) has been pulled off.

Put the lamb leg in a baking dish made, preferably, of pyrex or stainless steel. Add the almonds, onions, garlic, ginger, green chillies, and 3 tablespoons of the plain yogurt into the container of a food processor or blender and blend until you have a paste. Put the remaining yogurt into a bowl.

Beat lightly with a fork or a whisk until it is smooth and creamy.

Add the paste from the processor, the cumin, coriander, cayenne, salt and garam masala powder and mix. Push some of the spice paste into all of the openings in the lamb.

Spread the paste evenly on the underside of the leg (the side that originally had less fat.)

Now, using a small, sharp, pointed knife make deep slashes in the meat, and push in the spice paste with your fingers. Turn the leg over so its outer side (the side that was once covered with fat) is on the top.

Spread a very thick layer of paste over it. Again, make deep slashes with the knife and push the spice paste into the slashes.

Pour all of the remaining spice paste over and around the meat. Cover with a plastic cling film and refrigerate for 24 hours.

Take the baking dish with the meat out of the refrigerator and let the meat come to room temperature. Remove the cling film.

Heat the oil in a small frying pan over medium flame. When it gets hot, put in the cloves, cardamom pods, cinnamon and peppercorns. When the cloves swell - (this takes just a few seconds) - pour the hot oil and spices over the leg of lamb.

Preheat oven to gas mark 6, 400 F. Cover the baking dish tightly either with its own lid or with a large piece of aluminium foil. Bake, covered, for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake uncovered for 45 more minutes.

Baste 3-4 times with the sauce during this period. Scatter, or arrange in a pattern, the sultanas and almonds over the top of the leg and bake for another 5-6 minutes.

Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it sit in a warm place for 15 minutes.

Take the leg out of the pan and set it on a warm platter. Spoon off all of the fat from the top of the sauce. Use a slotted spoon and fish out all of the whole spice in the sauce.

Discard the spices.

Pour the sauce around the lamb leg.

Liver (Kaleji) 1 kg Salt to taste Red chillies 1 tbsp Whitecuminseeds (roasted, powdered) 1 tsp • Lemon juice 1-2 • Garlic ginger paste 1 tbsp • Green chillies 1-2 • Oil as required Preparation: • Heat wok on medium flame, add liver.

• Then add garlic and ginger paste.

• Once the water dries up, then add red chilli powder and cumin powder.

• Then add oil and stir.

• Add chopped green chillies and stir.

• Add lemon juice, and salt.

• Serve delicious kaleji.

• Tips for removing smell of Kidney and Liver.

• Take liver freshly cut, without washing.

• Take a whole garlic and crush, with the skin on.

• Apply the garlic all over the liver and leave in a strainer for 20 minutes.

• Then rinse with cold water in the strainer and leave for further 20 minutes.

• All smell from liver and kidney will disappear

Concentrate on the good things in life.

Don’t dwell on negative thoughts. A positive attitude helps you feel good about yourself and the life you live, and goes a long way towards improving your health.

Take control of your life. What can you do now to help you through a difficult transition in your future. Practice finding the good in each of our life’s transitions.

It’s not what you do to respond, but how you choose to respond!!

The value of good friends is hard to overemphasize. It suggests that people with friends to rely on during stressful times experience healthier, more successful and live longer. A good friendship lessens the negative effects of high stress level. It is very supportive towards a meaningful relationship at home and work.

Take time to take good care of yourself.

Eat a balanced diet, exercise and get plenty of rest. Take time to relax with friends and family. A high rate of change often means extra stress and strain on your body. It’s important to pay attention to what your body/mind/soul needs.

Build your self-esteem. Always remember, you are a unique individual with special talents and interests. It’s helpful to make a list of what you like most about yourself. Encouraging others to feel good about themselves is a wonderful way to feel good about ourselves. You will always cheer others if you pass a sincere compliment to people you care about.

The missing Goat number 3 !

They left 3 goats loose in the school on Sunday .they rounded up three goats from neighbourhood and painted numbers 1, 2 and 3 on their sides and let the goat loose inside the school building.The next morning as everybody arrived they could smell and see goat droppings in the school. They could found goats with no. 1, 2 and 4. They searched for no. 3 goat which of course was never found, simply because it never existed.

The third number goat which never existed in number could not found and the goat which had no. 4 was actually the third goat in a row.

Those of you, who have good life in spite of having many blessing, are actually looking for the elusive, missing, non- existent goat no. 3.

Absence is longer than life It is human nature to think and crave more for a thing or person which is absent. We like to live in past or future more than present. An absence of something is always longer than presence of many things. What is in the hands is what you have. Let us first feel the joy of what we have, the job we have, money or things we have, relationships we have. Everybody always have something, there is always some way, some

opportunities ahead.

We should work on our present resources. We should first try to work on our self, Make our own self better and worthy, take good care of our self, family and make our relations better. When we cannot get something on straight in life, instead of becoming depressed isn’t better to be happy in what we can enjoy with our present situations. After all happiness is related to state of mind, if one is not happy or worried, even the best of environment cannot change his mental state so materialistic things are means, instruments to achieve something not the goal.

No. 3 goat: Let us not just sit and cry and depress our self in search of third goat; be content and work hard. Life would be so much happier without the worries. Let’s not imagine on non-existent things and jeopardise the existence. Whatever happens doesn’t lose hold of two main ropes of life, hope and faith. It is not in hands to enjoy the night of star and moon or crave for cruise.

ram and the Hindukush ranges with their alpine meadows and permanent snow line, coniferous forests down the sub-mountain scrub, the vast Indus plain merging into the great desert, the coast line and wetlands, all offer a remarkably rich variety of vegetation and associated wildlife including avifauna, both endemic and migratory. Ten of 18 mammalian orders are represented in Pakistan with species ranging from the world’s smallest surviving mammals, the Mediterranean Pigmy Shrew, to the largest mammal ever known; the blue whale.

t its simplest, Pakistani cooking today consists of staple foods which are cheap and abundant. Wheat and other flour products is the mainstay of the diet, one familiar form being CHAPATI, unleavened bread akin to a Mexican tortilla. This is made with dough prepared from whole wheat flour.

Another basic food is LASSI, milk from which curds and butterfat have been removed. Vegetables, usually seasonal, lentils are commonly used. Families with larger incomes eat more meat eggs, and fruits. And the more affluent cook with GHEE, which is clarified butter, instead of with vegetable oil.

From the earliest times, the imaginative - and sometimes heavy - use of spices, herbs, seeds, and flavorings and seasonings have helped cooks transform rather ordinary staple foods into an exotic cuisine.

Consider some of the most common of these in wide use in Pakistan today: chilli powder, turmeric, garlic, paprika, black pepper, red pepper, cumin seed, bay leaf, coriander, cardamom, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, saffron, mace, nutmeg, poppy seeds, aniseed, almonds, pistachios, and yogurt.

Their use in a wide range of pickles, chutneys, preserves, and sauces, together with curries of all descriptions and special treatment for meats, sea, food, vegetables and lentils, gives Pakistani cooking much of its distinctive character.

Cultural influences, whether religious precepts, practices, and ceremonies or local traditions, or even esthetic preferences, have made their contribution toward the evolution of Pakistani cuisine.

Food and The Moghul Emperors A style of cookery called Moghlai’ evolved at the Moghul court and even today it remains centered in Lahore. Some latter-day and widely known survivors of court cookery are, for example, chicken tandoori, a dish in which chicken is cooked at low temperatures in special ovens called TANDOORS, and murgh musallum’ in which the whole chickens are roasted with special spices and ingredients.

SHAHI TUKRA, a dessert of sliced bread, milk, cream, sugar and saffron, is another left-over from the days of the Moghuls. Fruit drinks, squeezed from pomegranates, apples, melons, and mangoes, and called SHARBAT, are an important part of the Moghlai cuisine and, indeed, the inspiration for American “sherberts.”

Ceremonial occasions such as weddings have inspired a number of fancy dishes. A traditional dish at marriage feasts, for example, is chicken curry with either PILAU or Biryani.

Firini, made from cream of rice and milk, is an equally traditional wedding dessert. It is served in clay saucers topped by silver foil.
