Obligation Of Election Participation
he rising political temperature ahead of October 20 Civic election in the municipalities of British Columbia are the source of excitement of course. With the political wrangling already getting red hot, many people are desperately contesting to grab the mayoral position. And, there are number of candidates trying to win against available positions for the office of councillorship, while many candidates are struggling for the school trustees. As the race is interesting one, the local citizens must feel free to go ahead and vote for their favourite contestants for next four year tenure. Taking an active part in the democratic process is duty of every eligible voter. Ignoring the important process and the obligated participation therein would be of great disadvantage to the local citizens. Exercising the right of vote means electing those who have a clean past record with integrity. However, “not voting” means missing out the extremely important opportunity to effectively voice your opinion about the right candidate. In fact, the political process has been designed in a way, where voting connects the voters with each other, so that the candidates with majority votes are chosen to look after the official duties. Furthermore, just a simple act of marking ballot tells our leaders exactly what we think about policy decisions that affect our lives. Fair taxation, better City planning, Law enforcement, issues, the Bi-Laws and numerous other issues are handled better, if competent people with integrity are chosen at the time of election. Moreover, through voting each citizen becomes politically
aware of the democratic system, obligations and the advantages. On the contrary, the citizen with “I don’t care” attitude actually encourages the opposite of “fair and impartial” election results; thus contributes negatively. And the level playing field is compromised again to the disadvantage of the local community. It is clear that by not voting, the citizen is staying SILENT resulting in the loss of any right of voicing later to correct any misappropriation or administrative mishandling. Disaster is when the incompetent politicians have already
manipulated and taken advantage of the voters’ low turnout. Publicity by the biased media becomes problematic, as it sends wrong signal resulting in adversely affecting a good candidate. Misinformation is unfair, as it would not help the public choose the right candidates for the right job. That will be waste of time and money – adding to the financial strain on all concerned. It’s a bitter reality that some wrong elements in the media focus only on the negative actions of politicians, such as scandals, and ignore the “contribution” of such good candidates. Such a biased attitude is dangerous enough to turn the voters off.
And, there are always many students who are of the opinion that keeping up with election coverage is a waste of time for a variety of reasons, the most popular being that students never see the benefits of any election outcome. Here media has to play a positive role. A large number of Canadian youth jumped into the arena of politics, the younger voters still need encouragement to get involved with the political process at all levels by joining the political institutions. As no immediate fruits of such participation are seen, so many citizens are not convinced
enough. The government must take some steps to educate the student community to enhance their sense of civic responsibility that would encourage the youth to get out and vote. Clearly, by not voting, we actually break the connection between individual Canadians and their community. A democratic community can only survive if its citizens participate in the political process under all circumstances. And, this electoral process connects us to one another as citizens, as well as by expressing our opinion we actually help maintain our democratic order.
Certainly, the democracy would be dead if no one comes out to vote. Therefore, a democracy by its very nature needs the participation of the people, otherwise there is no democracy. Therefore, it’s of extreme importance to make your voice heard through casting a ballot for the candidate of your independent choice. Not voting clearly equals nothing but “stupid silence” allowing the crooks to grab positions of political importance. A crook and incompetent person should never be allowed to serve the community. Yet, in the absence of voicing your opinion through polls, there is your silence which becomes a contributory negligence as the right people for the right job couldn’t have been elected; thus, depriving the community of competent office holders. Now, you can’t complain about what you already have allowed by not showing up. A vote was your voice, which you lost by ignoring your own legal right of voting. Agreement or disagreement is immaterial after it’s all over. Also, voting is a responsibility and a duty. It also gives you power, because you become involved as a participant. It’s encouraging to note that even the “chamber of commerce” demands municipal voting rights be extended to businesses. Most importantly, there is absolutely no excuse for not voting, as a lot of flexibility is available to facilitate the potential voter. As there is always a big price tag attached - to carry out the democratic process aimed at selecting the federal, provincial or city’s political representatives, the tax payers must think twice before voting for the wrong person or staying silent by not taking part at all in the political process during election tim

‘Miraculous Muharram & Muslim New year’!
By: Gulshan Aalani
Muharram, the first month of the most significant Islamic New Year. In which wars and killing is forbidden-Haraam. One of the most sacred Miraculous month ‘Muharram’ known as ‘Month of Allah’ for a number of most significant miracles performed by Allah-Creator-GOD that no human gods can. HE rescued the Prophet -Universal
Messenger Muhammad (SAWS), and the new Muslims consists of Jews, Arabs, Bani Israel etc., from the tyrant Pagans persecuting them for accepting One Creator GOD, and HIS final Revelation. They needed to escape the extreme ill treatment, torture, cruelty on Children, kidnapping women, discrimination by the notorious authority and so the divine help was given to them. Amazingly, they were divinely guided to migrate to Yathrib-Abyssinia whose Christian ruler King Negus -An-Najashi was known as a righteous person who after listening the Sura Maryam/Mary recited by H. Jaffer (RA) the elder brother of Caliph H. Ali (RA), he was most impressed and realized the authenticity of the Divine Revelation and closeness of Christianity and Islam that is the continuation of past Revelations, he welcomed the new Muslims to stay in his country. The other miraculous happy occasion of ‘Exodus’ Day of Freedom, major rescue of Bani Israel by the
hard work of Prophet Moses (AS) and by Divine blessings. Evidently, on the day of Ashura of Muharram Allah granted victory to Prophet Moses (AS) over the King Pharaoh. God delivered Prophet Moses (AS) and his people Bani Israel their salvation from the oppressor evil Idol worshiper king Pharaoh and his evil Army, who earned GOD’S wrath for their cruelty, unjust system and the major sin of ignoring the command of Prophet Moses (AS) to free the oppressed Slaves. After experiencing some calamities and Divine punishment Pharaoh gave in and freed the slaves, but later followed them with the Army out of anger to destroy them but they failed due to the Sea in between: Miraculously, the sea was divided into the safe crossing path and Prophet Moses (AS) and his followers were saved by none other than the Super Power Supreme Being Allah Creator-GOD and Pharaoh and his evil army were
drowned. Quran: 20 80: “O ye Children of Israel WE delivered you from your enemy and WE made a covenant with you on the right side of Mount Sinai; remember WE delivered you from the people of Pharaoh they set hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons and let your women folk live; therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord; and remember WE divided the Sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharaoh’s people within your sight”. Consequently, his victory was celebrated as Eid day by our brethren Jewish and the tribes of Prophet Israeli-Jacob (AS). The same tradition is continued by Muslim Ummah as suggested by Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) to celebrate his victory and thank Allah by fasting 2 days of Ashura. Also special Dua is made for all the martyrs including Prophet’s Grand son H. Hussain (RA) and 2nd. Caliph Umar (RA) who are not considered dead but alive in Heaven.

Council of Islamic Ideology backs legislation on triple talaq as punishable offence
Dr Qibla Ayaz, the chairperson of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), on Wednesday announced the council’s decision to support the declaration of ‘triple talaq’ as a punishable offence, and that the council would undergo consultations with various scholars soon to decide the appropriate punishment in such cases.Addressing a press conference soon after a de-
tailed meeting held by the council the same day, the chairperson revealed that a conference will be held soon in which scholars will provide their input on the matter. The council also decided that to remedy the prevalent divorce rate and other such issues, a consolidated form for divorce will be prepared which will include punitive measures for cases in which divorce is declared three times in one sitting. A draft for the consolidated form will be submitted for the federal government’s review, the CII chairperson informed mediap ersons, adding that work had already begun on the form and that it will be ready soon. Dr Ayaz said that ‘on-the-spot’ divorce had become a widespread social issue, incidences of which are reported on a daily basis to various mosques, after which the matter is taken to court. Members of the council during the meeting observed that in such situations, women and children are adversely affected, especially with regard to their emotional health and future education. LHC rejects appeal to summon Nawaz, Shahbaz in Model Town case
A Lahore High Court (LHC) full bench on Wednesday rejected two sets of appeals challenging a trial court’s decision on a private complaint of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)/Idara Minhajul Quran regarding the 2014 Model Town incident. The PAT in its appeal had challenged the earlier decision of an anti-terrorism court to the extent of not summoning 12 people (all former parliamentarians of the PML-N including Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif), nominated by the party in its private complaint. Former inspector general of Punjab police, Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera and 127 other government officials had challenged the ATC’s decision to the effect of their summoning by the trial court in the complaint moved by the PAT. The ATC in April this year indicted 116 police officials on a private complaint filed by the Idara Minhajul Quran for their trial on charges of killing its workers during 2014 Model Town incident. The 116 accused indicted by the
court pleaded not guilty and opted to contest their trial. The bench headed by Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan had reserved its verdict on appeals challenging the trial court’s decision on June 27 after Punjab Prosecutor General Ehtesham Qadir and lawyers of appellants had concluded their arguments. Justice Aalia Neelum and Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem were the other members of the bench. The court today decided to uphold the ATC’s earlier decision and rejected the PAT appeal to summon Nawaz, Shahbaz, Hamza Shahbaz, Rana Sanaullah, Khwaja Saad Rafiq, Khwaja Asif, Pervaiz Rashid, Abid Sher Ali, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Syed Tauqir Shah, Azam Suleman and Rashid Mahmood Langrial, as well as Sukhera’s appeal. The bench rejected the PAT’s appeal with a 2 to 1 majority. Justice Muhammad Qasim Ali Khan opposed the decision made by the two other judges to reject the appeal and issued dissenting note. The PML-N Shahbaz to lead Public Accounts Committee
The PML-N will head nine standing committees of the National Assembly and Opposition Leader Shahbaz Sharif will lead the all-important Public Accounts Committee of the parliament. The decisions to this effect were taken at a meeting
of the PML-N parliamentary group chaired by Sharif at the Parliament House, the party’s spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb told Dawn. PAC is the apex parliamentary watchdog that oversees the audit of revenue and expenditure by the government. The NA speaker is yet to constitute standing and functional committees of the house. Political parties get representation in and chairmanship of the committees in proportion to their strength in the assembly. According to Aurangzeb, it was decided in the meeting that the PML-N will keep a check on the government’s steps and policies regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, development projects and the local bodies system. Addressing party legislators, Shahbaz Sharif said the
opposition will make efforts to meet the expectations of the people. He said the opposition will ensure that parliament is the “only hope for the people of this country” and only through the parliament the people’s demands could be met. Lawmakers have not come to the legislature to get salaries and stage sit-ins, he was quoted as saying during the meeting. The PML-N members vowed to protect the local bodies system that had been introduced by their government, particularly in Punjab. Sharif, who had opened the budget debate in the NA on Monday, said the ‘mini-budget’ presented by Finance Minister Asad Umar showed the government had “no economic vision at all”. Source: dawn.com

Trump says US will only give aid ‘to our friends’
I nt
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States would only give aid to countries that it regarded as allies. Addressing world leaders at the start of the annual United Nations General Assembly, Trump lashed out at the OPEC oil cartel, China’s trade policies and the International Criminal Court which he vowed the United States would never accept.“We will examine what is working, what is not working, and whether the countries who receive our dollars and our protection also have our interests at heart,” Trump said in his speech.“Moving forward, we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and frankly are our friends.” Moreover, the US president accused members of the OPEC oil cartel of “ripping off ” the world as he called for a lowering of fuel prices. The United States stands ready to export our abundant affordable supply of oil, clean coal, and natural gas,” Trump told the
United Nations General Assembly. “OPEC and OPEC nations are, as usual, ripping off the rest of the world, and I don’t like it. Nobody should like it.” Furthermore, Trump urged heavy pressure both on Iran and Washington’s trading partners as he offered a robust defence of the US right to go it alone. Hours before Iranian President Hassan Rouhani takes the same rostrum, Trump denounced the clerical regime as sowing “chaos, death, and destruction” and doubled down on the US withdrawal of an international agreement on curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme. But the real estate mogul turned populist leader was comparatively subdued a year after he stunned the global body with his bellicose language on North Korea, including a threat to “totally destroy” Kim Jong Un’s state. This time around, Trump heralded his own diplomacy on North Korea including a historic summit in June with Kim, saying he has worked to “replace the specter of conflict with a bold and new push for peace.” With midterm elections in the United States little more than a month away, Trump’s address at times took on the feel of a campaign address as he heralded low unemployment. Boasting that his team “has achieved more than any administration in the history of our country,” Trump was met with laughter, highly unusual in the solemn General Assembly.“I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s okay,” Trump responded. India’s top court on Wednesday upheld the legality of the government’s Aadhaar national identity project, the world’s largest biometric database, but imposed new restrictions on how the personal details of more than one billion citizens can be used. The ruling by a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court draws a line under many years of legal challenges from critics, who said Aadhaar threatened individual privacy and risked turning the world’s second-most populous nation into a surveillance state. The government had insisted Aadhaar, which issues every Indian with a unique 12-digit ID linked to fingerprints and iris scans, would streamline welfare services and root out fraud. It was also pitched as a transparent way to ensure that government handouts of food, fuel and other essentials to India’s poorest would not be siphoned off by corrupt middlemen, a huge problem in the vast country of 1.25bn.
In its ruling the Supreme Court upheld the legality of the scheme, saying the benefits far outweighed any risks. The judges ruled that anybody drawing on government services — from filing tax returns to accessing pensions or welfare — would by law require an Aadhaar number. But the bench said corporations could not insist that Indians provide their unique ID to register for services such as phone numbers — a key complaint from privacy advocates who say Aadhaar had gone too far. The scheme was rolled out under the previous Congress Party government in 2010 but grew in scope under Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept to power in 2014. Initially a voluntary programme, it soon became mandatory for those wishing to access government services, including even schoolchildren wanting free lunches provided by the state. The court, in its landmark ruling, also said children would not need Aadhaar to enrol in school since a right to education was fundamental to all Indians. The government went to the Supreme Court last year to argue that Indians did not have a fundamental right to privacy — a case linked to Aadhaar that it lost. The Supreme Court in January began hearing a series of challenges to the constitutional validity of Aadhaar, a Hindi word meaning “foundation”. Source: dawn.com

Iran arrests ‘separatists’ behind deadly Ahvaz parade attack Saudi Arabia denied it backed the gunmen who killed 29 people at a military parade in southwestern Iran, almost half of them Revolutionary Guards, the Saudi state news agency reported on Tuesday. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday the attackers were paid by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and pledged the Islamic Republic would “severely punish” those behind the assault. “Saudi Arabia rejects and condemns the false accusations that Iranian officials have made about Saudi Arabia supporting the events that took place in Iran last Saturday,” SPA quoted a foreign ministry statement as saying. “Saudi Arabia’s policy is clear regarding its non-interference in the domestic affairs of other countries. The Iranian regime, in contrast, interferes in the affairs of its neighbours and is the leading sponsor of terrorism in the region and the world.” The deputy head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also accused the United States and Israel of involvement and said they should expect a devastating response. Arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran, both oil super-powers, are waging a war for influence across the Middle East, backing opposite sides in conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon. On Saturday, gunmen fired on a viewing stand in Ahvaz where officials had gathered to watch an annual parade marking the start of Iran’s 1980-88 war with Iraq. Iran, meanwhile, arrested 22 people allegedly linked to last week’s deadly attack, the intelligence ministry said. “The five members of a terrorist squad affiliated to jihadist separatist groups supported by Arab reactionary countries were identified,” the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.“The terrorists’ hideout was found and 22 people involved [in the attack] were arrested,” it said, adding explosives were seized along with military and communica-
tions equipment.“Foreign sponsors and supporters of this terrorist act have also been identified. More information will be provided on them in due course,” the statement said.Gunmen dressed in military uniform opened fire on marching soldiers, bystanders, and government officials, who had gathered to watch the parade on Saturday. Iranian officials were quick to point the finger at an Arab separatist group and its alleged international backers. They said that four gunmen had been killed. According to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), an armed group called alAhvaziya claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL) also said it was behind the assault. President Hassan Rouhani vowed to deliver a “crushing response”, while Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei linked the attack to the US and its “allies in the region”. Ahvaz is the capital city of Khuzestan province, which has the country’s largest oil reserves. With its proximity to Iraq and the presence of a large Arab minority, the area has seen ethnic violence in the past Khuzestan was a major battleground of the 1980s war with Iraq and it saw unrest in 2005 and 2011. The province has also been the site of recent protests over a nationwide drought and the economy. Source: Al-Jazeera
UN: ‘Credible’ reports of Afghan civilians killed in air strike
The United Nations said it is investigating “multiple, credible allegations” that nine members of a family were killed in an air raid in Afghanistan last week. In a statement on Tuesday, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said it was concerned over increasing numbers of civilian casualties, even as the United States’ air force denied the victims were civilians.Women and children were among those reportedly killed on Saturday after an “aerial ordnance” hit the home of a teacher in Tagab district in the country’s eastern province of Kapisa. Six others were wounded.“All the victims from the attack were from the same family, including grandparents and children aged between two and 12,” the statement said.“UNAMA reminds all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations to protect civilians from harm.”Mohammad Radmanish, a defence ministry spokesperson, confirmed civilian casualties during a joint operation by Af-
ghan and US forces. He gave no details, except saying an investigation was under way. The US military in the capital Kabul said it was reviewing information regarding the Kapisa incident, adding it does all it can to avoid civilian casualties. “We are aware of the UNAMA announcement regarding Kapisa, as well as the Afghan government’s statements, and that they’re conducting their independent process,” the US military said. “It is not uncommon for insurgents to use these accusations to drive a wedge between the military and the population,” it said. In a strategy aimed at forcing the Taliban to accept peace talks, air raids in Afghanistan spiked steeply this year with the number of bombs dropped by the US air force almost doubling in the first six months to nearly 3,000. UNAMA’s data shows a jump of 52 percent in the number of civilians killed or wounded in air attacks in the first half of the year. The UN said 149 civilians were killed and 204 wounded during the period, with women and children comprising more than half the 353 casualties.Since the figures were reported in July, the UN said it had recorded increasing numbers of civilian casualties from air strikes. The Afghan air force was responsible for 52 percent of the casualties, UNAMA said, while “international military forces” accounted for 45 percent. The US, which has been at war in Afghanistan for nearly 17 years, is the only international force known to conduct air raids in the country. Source: Al-Jazeera

Canada not making concessions ‘If’ NAFTA 2.0 proceeds, Trudeau needed for a NAFTA deal, says U.S. wants to feel ‘confident’ on tariffs
Canada is not making concessions needed to reach a deal with the United States for a trilateral NAFTA pact and is running out of time before Washington proceeds with a Mexico-only agreement, a top U.S. official said on Tuesday. The administration of President Donald Trump has recently started increasing the pressure on Canada, urging it to conclude a deal by Sept. 30 or face exclusion from a revised North American Free Trade Agreement. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said there was some “distance” between the two sides on issues such as access to Canada’s dairy market and how best to settle trade disputes. “The fact is, Canada is not making concessions in areas where we think they’re essential,” Lighthizer said at the Concordia Summit in New York. “We’re going to go ahead with Mexico. If Canada comes along now, that would be the best. If Canada comes along later, then that’s what will happen. “We’re sort of running out of time.” Trump has demanded major changes to NAFTA, which he says caused U.S. manufacturing jobs to move to low-wage Mexico. Markets are nervous about the impact on a deal that underpins $1.2 trillion in annual trade. Canadian officials say that despite the U.S. threats to go it alone with Mexico, they do not believe Trump can by himself turn the 1994 pact into a bilateral deal. U.S. business groups, alarmed by the potential disruption
to the three increasingly integrated economies, have lobbied the White House to keep NAFTA as a trilateral deal. The office of Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, who sits opposite Lighthizer at the negotiations, did not respond to a request for comment. The two are in New York for a UN meeting but it is unclear whether they will meet. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke before Lighthizer at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and took a more cautious tone about the outcome. “They (the United States and Mexico) made certain agreements,” he said. “I think there’s a possibility there to build on what they agreed.” The Trump administration says the text of a deal is needed by Saturday to allow the Mexican government to sign it before leaving office on Nov 30. “With Mexico, we’re not going to say ‘no deal’ because of Canada,” Lighthizer said. “That doesn’t make any sense at all, so hopefully we’ll end up with something with Canada.” Canada also has made clear the United States needs to withdraw Trump’s threat of a 25 per cent tariff on autos for a deal to be possible. The United States, citing security reasons, imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in late May. Lighthizer said those tariffs would be addressed once NAFTA had been completed. Travel agent’s spelling mistake strands mom and toddler in Iran
With deadline in jeopardy, Canadians ‘working on a broad range of alternatives,’ PM says As the Trump administration continues to link the lifting of steel and aluminum tariffs to a successful conclusion of trade talks, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canadians need to feel confident about what will happen ‘if ’ they move forward. Speaking at a press conference before leaving the United Nations General Assembly in New York to return to Ottawa, Trudeau said he’s discussed the tariffs the Americans justify on “national security” grounds in many conversations with the U.S. president. Donald Trump insisted “a few times” that “if we renegotiate NAFTA ... there will be no need to worry about these other things,” Trudeau said. Getting the right deal for Canada, Trudeau said, “involves obviously feeling confident about the path forward, as we move forward, if we do, on a NAFTA 2.0,” he said, including a “lack of punitive tariffs that we consider are unjust.” The U.S. steel industry continues to operate below its capacity, so the Trump administration believes these tariffs protect domestic jobs. They’ve also helped increase prices, and resulted in profits, for the U.S.
industry. But the administration’s use of provisions intended to protect industries vital to national security is controversial, and now subject to a challenge at the World Trade Organization from countries who believe they unfairly manipulate global trade to the U.S.’s benefit. When the U.S. reached a preliminary agreement in principle with Mexico last month, it did not agree to lift steel and aluminum tariffs with that country, although it did include a side letter that would cap automotive exports from Mexico in return for not adding more national security tariffs on Mexican cars and parts. As a country providing significantly more steel and aluminum to the U.S. market, Canada is more reluctant to sign on to a deal that doesn’t guarantee an end to national security tariffs between the two trading partners. Housing Minister Selina Robinson says annual increases will be capped at cost of inflation The provincial government is scrapping the rental increase formula and limiting the maximum annual rental increase to the cost of inflation. “Renters have told us that they are hurting and they need help today,” said Housing
Minister Selina Robinson. Existing regulations allow landlords to raise rents by the cost of inflation plus two per cent, but earlier this week a task force recommended eliminating the two per cent add-on. That recommendation, plus a second recommendation tabled by the task force allowing landlords to apply for additional rent increases to cover maintenance and repair costs was also accepted by cabinet today. “We want to make sure that we’re taking every step we can to reduce costs for people,” said Premier John Horgan. B.C.’s Civil Resolution Tribunal orders Richmond company to pay $1,100 for negligence Arman Aria had planned a big party to celebrate his son’s second birthday. But instead of spending the day with friends and family in Metro Vancouver, little Arad and his mother were stranded in Iran — all because of a travel agent’s spelling mistake. An employee at Richmond’s Plan-It With Pam Holidays had misspelled Arad’s middle name on his airline tickets and did nothing to correct it when the family pointed out the error, according to a recent decision from the Civil Resolution Tribunal. Last week, the tribunal awarded Aria more than $1,100 from the travel company, after finding it responsible for leaving mother and son stuck in Iran for two days. Aria said he was happy with the ruling, but “the pain and frustration, the money isn’t going to cover that.” The family had booked the tickets over the
telephone in October 2017, according to the decision. When Aria’s wife, Azadeh Lotfifar, visited Plan-It With Pam’s offices, she noticed Arad’s middle name was spelled wrong. She pointed it out, but an employee told her “that the middle name is not always that important, as airlines look at the first and last names,” according to tribunal member Kate Campbell. Lotfifar and the little boy flew to Iran on Lufthansa without a problem, but their return trip on Dec. 1 was booked with British Airways. When mother and son arrived for their flight, they were turned away. Aria remembers getting the call from his wife in Iran. It was “awful,” he told CBC. “The whole time my son was crying in the airport,” Aria said. The little boy was worn down after a month of travelling, and “he was constantly crying because he was sick.” Source: CBC News

Candidate for Surrey Mayor Popat was previously a council candidate with the now defunct Surrey Community Alliance slate. Imtiaz Popat has announced that he is running for Surrey mayor in the upcoming Oct. 20 election. In a release, Popat said he’s running to “give the people of Surrey a better choice.” “There is no one running for mayor I can support,” said Popat, who was originally nominated to run for city council with now defunct Surrey Community Alliance. “People are telling me that none of the candidates for mayor are a credible choice.” Popat said he does not support LRT or Skytrain, but rather the “reactivation of the interurban community rail.” According to Popat, the interurban was planned as a community rail service south of the Fraser that would run from Scott Road station through Newton, Cloverdale, Langley, Abbotsford all the way to Chilliwack at a “fraction of the cost of the proposed LRT or Skytrain.”“The new high-tech trams would be hydrogen powered and would be even cheaper that buses,” Popat said in a release. “The tracks are intact and have been preserved for commuter rail service. Both LRT and Skytrainwill damage the fragile ecology of the Green Timbers Urban Forest. We don’t need another ecocide after what the outgoing council did with Hawthorne Park. They must be held accountable for what they did.” Popat said the City of Surrey shouldn’t be pitching in money for the LRT project, that rather, that money should be spend on social housing. In June, the city decided to contribute roughly $24.5 million to the first phase of the project, described as a “modest sum.” “Both the LRT and Skytrain projects will displace a lot of low income housing,” said Popat. “Where are these people going to go?” Meanwhile, Popat said he supports a Surrey police force, something proposed by the Sur-
rey Community Alliance. “I don’t however think we need to increase the number of officers as other parties have proposed, nor do I think we need a referendum that Tom Gill has proposed,” he said. “What we need is a police force that is accountable to community and works with community. We need better sensitivity training so that diverse population trust our police force.” Imtiaz Popat, has lived in Surrey for over 30 years. His biography says he is counsellor, and a community TV and radio host. He is currently the development officer for the One Love West Coast Festival being held in Surrey in September and a program assistant at the Phoenix Drug & Alcohol Recovery & Education Society.“He is a longtime equal rights and social justice activist,” a release notes. “He founded the Coalition Against Bigotry – Pacific to challenge the rise of bigotry in the pacific coast.” Popat says his understanding as a counsellor will help him “understand critical issues facing diverse communities such as mental health, addiction as well issues around gang violence in order to advocate for more inclusive programs and service that are offered by the city.” Other mayoral candidates in the upcoming Oct. 20 election in Surrey are Surrey First’s Tom Gill, Integrity Now’s Bruce Hayne, former mayor Doug McCallum with his Safe Surrey Coalition, Rajesh Jayaprakash with People First Surrey, and Proudly Surrey’s Pauline Greaves.
Tom Gill , is Surrey First’s candidate for mayor
Four-term Surrey city councillor Tom Gill has been chosen as Surrey First’s mayoral candidate for the Oct. 20 municipal election. Outgoing Mayor Linda Hepner, who announced in April that she would not be seeking re-election, made the announcement on Friday.“Tom’s experience and commitment to our city makes him a tremendous choice to be Surrey’s next mayor,” said Hepner. “Tom knows Surrey so well, and he understands what needs to be done in the busy years ahead to make sure we remain a great place to live, work and raise a family. Tom will make a terrific mayor and be a strong, decisive and level-headed voice for our community at the regional, provincial and federal levels.” An accountant, Gill currently chairs the city’s finance and transportation committees. He also sits on the police committee and was a founding director of the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society. “Our city has a great story to tell and I’m looking forward to leading our Surrey First team so that we can continue building an even better Surrey in the years ahead,” he said. Gill’s announcement comes one day after Bruce Hayne, a two-term Surrey First councillor, revealed he was resigning from the civic party and will sit an independent. Gill said

When Abubakar Khan talks about his run for Vancouver City Council, he speaks with an inspiring amount of passion. “That word [young] needs to change,” he said to me. “Age should not be such a big, defining factor. I really hope that young people realize that we can do this [run for office] as well. We don’t need to wait until we’re 40 or 50 to take a chance or to make a difference civically.” At the age of 24, Abubakar could be Vancouver’s youngest City Councillor to date. To him, that means he’s defying the stigma of young people being inexperienced. He’s out to prove that young folks have a perspective that’s just as valuable as any other. “Young is a new perspective. It’s one that’s
been missing in this arena e s p e c i a l l y. There are about 110,000 millennials in Vancouver, but no voice representing that on City Council.”* Abubakar told me he’s running for office because he had no other option. He volunteers his time with multiple groups and attempts to contribute his thoughts, but often feels overlooked. “I’m taking on initiatives, attending rallies… and I’m often stuffing envelopes. I’m really excited to be running for city council for the City of Richmond in the upcoming election. I ran in 2014 and had a great experience. In aviation, communication is absolutely critical to a pilot’s work, and I want to bring the same kind of mind set to City Hall where greater dialogue and two-way communication is absolutely necessary. I am an alumni of 655 Air Cadet Squadron and a graduate of Quilchena Elementary, Burnett Jr. High and Richmond Senior High (1984). The values of hard work, persistence and dedication were instilled upon me by my parents, Mahmood and Mahmooda Awan at a very young age. I will bring the same values as councillor to City Hall. I hope to tackle the city’s housing crisis, transportation and infrastructure and advocate for increased transparency at city hall. FAITH On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsaid:Allah said: Sons of Adam inveigh against [the vicissitudes of] Time, and I am Time, in My hand is the night and the day (1). (1) As the Almighty is the Ordainer of all things, to inveigh against misfortunes that are part of Time is tantamount to inveighing against Him. It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim).

Khushoo in Salah
By: Nasmira Firdous hen I was given this topic, I started mentally rewinding all the series and lectures, books or articles I had heard/read about khushoo and its importance in salah. However, what I soon realized was that it didn’t matter how much I read or how many lectures I listened to, the effect of having khushoo only lasted for a few prayers and was not a consistent element in my salah. For those who are not really sure what khushoo is, its most often translated as sincerity and concentration during salah, where you focus only on speaking with your Creator and not getting distracted by worldly affairs. A famous speaker portrayed a very powerful and beautiful definition of khushoo. He said khushoo is a feeling when your limbs and mind become numb, when you can’t think or hear about anything else around you because you are standing in front of the King, the Master and speaking to Him. He referred to this numbness as something similar to what students would go through if they were summoned in front of the Principal’s office: the fear in their hearts and the numbness that engulfs their mind for a split second Sadly, there have been instances when I rush through the salah and sometimes even forget if I am praying the 3rd rakat or the 4th one! In trying to figure out where I was going wrong repeatedly, I narrowed down on the following points, which I hope would help you to develop khushoo when you pray next time, insha’Allah. 1. Get into the groove even before prayer begins: Imagine how we would plan for a meeting or an interview. We would begin with checking if we are dressed properly, if our papers are ready and if we have perfected our speech. We would probably even repeat the speech many times over to make ourselves look prepared and confident. Imagine the amount of pre-preparation we should undergo in order to talk in front of the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth! So, in order to focus in salah, let us prepare even before we actually start praying. Condition your mind and nafs to get into the groove by: • Repeating after the adhaan • Reciting the dua after adhaan • Doing wudhoo with concentration • Dressing nicely! (You are presenting yourself in front of your Lord, remember?) • And, most importantly, pray on TIME. 2. Learn something new: Try learning a new short surah, or maybe even a few lines from a long surah. Recite the same after fatiha. This way, you are automatically forced to concentrate on reciting something new. In turn, you will be keeping your heart and mind vigilant. This is an extremely powerful tool to prevent your mind from wandering away into
thinking about other inconsequential matters while praying. 3. Don’t steal while praying: Abu Qutaadah (may Allah subhaana wa ta’aala be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘The worst type of thief is the one who steals from his prayer.’ He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can a person steal from his prayer?’ He said, ‘By not doing rukoo’ and sujood properly.’” When treating salah as a boring form of physical movement, we tend to rush through to get over with it! But, we lose the blessings of performing salah here. While performing sujood, spend a couple of minutes extra to make dua. Bow your heart along with your body and submit to the Highest Power. Allow humility and peace to enter your heart and mind while praying rather than being worried about what meal to prepare. While getting up from sujood, sit up straight and then go back into sujood position slowly, rather than slamming your forehead to the ground in quick succession. Feel relaxed and allow each bone in your body to feel at ease. Salah gives you a free ticket to talk to the King of Heavens and the Earth, acknowledge the fact that it is a graceful and powerful meeting! 4. Learn the language: Well, the main reason why most of us find it difficult to concentrate in salah is because we fail to realize the magnanimity of the occasion, fail to realize whom we are speaking to and in most cases, don’t even understand what we are reciting because most of us are not native Arabs. The best way to develop khushoo is to learn the language. If you don’t find time or means to learn Arabic, you can start by learning the meaning of the surahs that you generally recite during prayer. Try listening to the tafseers of those surahs and you will automatically realize the beauty of each letter mentioned in the Holy Book, helping you concentrate on every single word being uttered in salah, making you crave for more, insha’Allah. 5. Perfect your relationship with Allah : Allah says, “… and establish prayer for My remembrance” [Surah Taha 20:14] This is the Lord, the All Mighty, All Powerful asking us to pray so that we remember Him. Is there any instant when we forget our own families or kids? Now, how is it that we forget the Creator, the one who
created our families and kids? You might be wondering why I am talking about perfecting our relationship with Allah subhaana wa ta’aala on the same lines as that of khushoo. Ever noticed how close we get with friends when we get to know them better? A phone call or an online chat with them becomes more important than anything else. Imagine how much more engrossed we would be if we could develop the same kind of relationship (if not more) with our Lord ? Start thinking about Allah subhaana wa ta’aala throughout the day and it will be easier to talk to Him when you are given 5 chances to do so. Take the first step, and He will come running towards you! 6. Defeat Satan: “Then I (Satan) will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].” [Surah Al-A’raf 7:17] Satan has promised to annoy us and take us away from the straight path. We are given a challenge here to submit ourselves to our Lord and not let the Satan win. Salah is probably the most perfect time for Satan to distract us and he does end up succeeding on more occasions than one. Suddenly, an unfinished work seems more important and his whispers start getting louder. Crush the satanic whispers from within. Stay away from haram, do not waste ‘free’ time, read beneficial books and do not make your mind a piece of meat for the Satan to devour upon. Keep Satan at bay when you are not praying and you will automatically be successful in cutting out his whispers while praying insha’Allah. 7. Diversify your dua list: Most of the time, we end up asking the same set of duas with an added ‘demand’ here and there according to the situation we are in. Notice how we always have something new and exciting to share with our friends everyday? But, why is it that we tell the same stuff everyday to our Lord? Speak to Him with zeal, enthusiasm and humility. Start diversifying your dua list. Increase your
time in sujood and make dua, don’t rush to finish tasleem and walk out. Ask dua constantly to increase khushoo levels. 8) Want to be successful? Here’s how:“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive (khaashi’oon)” [Surah Al-Mu’minun 23: 1-2] In the above verses, Allah subhaana wa ta’aala says those who have attained khushoo (khaashi’oon) are indeed successful. He doesn’t call them religious, He calls themsuccessful. Notice the choice of words here? When you manage to discipline your nafs, mind and heart in front of the Highest Power, it becomes easy to discipline yourself within the boundaries of Islam while dealing with worldly matters too, making you successful here and in the Hereafter! Know that you’ve experienced a small percentage of khushoo when: • You can only hear the words which you are uttering to our Lord, • When external noises are muted, • When every single worry in your heart ceases to exist, • When the beauty of Allah’s Mercy and the magnanimity of talking to Him subhaana wa ta’aala fills your heart with awe, so much so that you don’t want to complete your prayer and let the beautiful meeting end, • When your limbs get soaked in numbness, • When you feel sad that your meeting and oneon-one conversation with Allah subhaana wa ta’aala is coming to an end during the last rakat, • And, when you cry (without feeling embarrassed that someone might see you), making you yearn for the next salah! May Allah subhaana wa ta’aala make us of those who are successful. May Allah subhaana wa ta’aala make us of those who are the chosen ones in His eyes. May Allah subhaana wa ta’aala allow our hearts to taste the sweetness and beauty of this blessed religion. May Allah subhaana wa ta’aala make us of those who develop khushoo in every single prayer we are allowed to perform until our last breath! Ameen.

Say, [O Muhammad], “I do not ask you for this message any payment [but] only good will through kinship.” And whoever commits a good deed - We will increase for him good therein. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Appreciative.”He explained word Arabic word ”Mawaddata” in details and then delivered a very informative , spiritual speech in Urdu regarding the events of Karbala and the reasons behind it. Imaam Hussein fought to save and honour of
Islam against the tyranny of Yazeed. Saiyad Imroz mostly focused at the theme of Shahadat (sacrifice)of Imaam Hussain and defined the difference between Love and Mawaddata. Maulana also said that it is no doubt that Panjtan Pak (Prophet (SAW), Ali (R.A.), Fatima (R.A.), Hassan and Hussain (R.A), are Ahle Bayt but Prophet’s close family members and relatives are also the Ahle Bayt and it is proved through Hadiths. Today we should remember the Scarifies of Syedna Imam Hussain and his family and follow his lesson and teachings of his Grandfather. Imran Khan’s Saudi Arabia challenge
It was a first state visit by a Pakistani leader in years. It was also first foreign trip by Imran Khan as prime minister. What was notable was that Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz himself received Imran when he arrived at his palace in Jeddah. Prime Minister Imran visited Saudi Arabia despite his earlier announcement that he would not travel abroad at least for his first three months in office. The reason he had to travel to Saudi Arabia because, in Imran’s own words, he could not
turn down an invitation from the Saudi monarch. Saudi Arabia holds the key for the new government to deal with some of the pressing economic challenges. Pakistan’s economy is currently in shambles and hence requires urgent financial assistance. The PTI government has not yet decided whether to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout package. It is instead reaching out to countries such as Saudi Arabia for the rescue.
Turkey’s Erdogan vows to impose secure zones east of Euphrates in Syria ISTANBUL: Turkey will take action east of the Euphrates river in Syria and impose secure zones as it has done in the northwest of the country, President Tayyip Erdogan said in comments broadcast on Turkish media on Monday. Earlier this year, Turkey carried out a military operation to seize control of Syria’s Afrin region from the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which Ankara considers a terrorist organization. The YPG also controls the Syrian region east of the Euphrates.“God willing, in the period ahead we will increase the number of secure zones in Syria, encompassing the east of the Euphrates,” Er-
dogan said in a speech during a visit to New York. Before the Afrin operation, Turkey also carried out a cross-border operation dubbed “Euphrates Shield,” which targeted both the YPG and Daesh fighters east of Afrin. After the completion of Euphrates Shield in early 2017, Turkey set up local systems of governance in the swathe of land under its control and protected by Turkish forces. It has done the same in Afrin. Erdogan has in the past warned of new military operations against the YPG along the Syrian border and if necessary into northern Iraq. Expanding Turkey’s military campaign into
the much larger Kurdish-held territory east of the Euphrates would risk confronting troops of NATO ally the US, that are deployed alongside a YPG-dominated force there. The YPG has been Washington’s main ally against Daesh in Syria, infuriating Ankara which sees the Kurdish force as an extension of a militant group waging a decades-long insurgency in southeast Turkey. Erdogan’s comments come a week after he and Russia’s Vladimir Putin announced a deal under which Russian and Turkish troops will enforce a demilitarized zone in northwest Syria’s Idlib region.
US troops to stay in Syria as long as Iran forces operate on foreign soil — Bolton
NEW YORK: US troops would not leave Syria as long as Iranian forces its proxies were operting in foreign countries, one of Donald Trump’s closest advisors warned on Monday. The warning from US National Security adviser John Bolton was a clear statement of the White Houses intent to curtail Tehran’s influence in Syria and other countries in the region. Iran was responsible for attacks in Syria, and Lebanon and was responsible for the shooting down of a Russian military aircraft last week, Bolton said. Bolton said the US would keep a military presence in Syria until Iran is no longer active there. “We’re not going to leave as long as Iranian troops are outside Iranian borders and that includes Iranian proxies and militias,” he
said. Both Israel ths US and neighboring Arab countries have all expressed their deep concern about Iran’s powerful presence in Syria and how long it plans to stay. Israel has carried out strikes against many sites in Syria linked to Iranian militias. Last week, it was during an Israeli air raid that Syrian air defenses shot down an aircraft belonging to the Russian military, which is a key supporter of President Bashar Al-Assad. Bolton on Monday warned Russia that its decision to respond by supplying Syria with an advanced missile defense system would be a “major mistake” and should be reconsidered, AP reported. “We have American forces in the area we’re concerned about,” Bolton said. “The Israelis
have a legitimate right to self-defense against this Iranian aggressive behavior, and what we’re all trying to do is reduce tensions, reduce the possibility of major new hostilities.” Shortly before the downing, Israeli strikes had hit targets inside Syria, reportedly preventing an arms shipment to the Iranianbacked militant Hezbollah group. Bolton’s warning on Iran came as France warned Monday that the Middle East risked “perpetual war” unless a peace agreement can be reached in Syria. Syrian President “Bashar Assad but also those who support him have a responsiblity to work for a political solution,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters at the United Nations.
“If not, we risk heading toward a sort of perpetual war in the area,” he said. Meanwhile, France has called for stronger international sanctions on Libyans who stand in the way of a political solution in the conflict-ridden country. The current situation “forces us to show greater firmness toward those who want to insist on the status quo for their sole benefit,” Le Drian said, urging sanctions against the “militia members who threaten Tripoli.”

for council, City of Surrey \I am running for Surrey City council because I have lived in Surrey for 26 years and I believe in what Surrey represents. Surrey is a diverse city made of different cultures and ethnic background all of whom work hard to form this beautiful community. I came as a refugee to Canada 33 years ago following the Russians invasion of Afghanistan. The journey was difficult. We had to escape though the mountain on horseback to save our lives while I was one month pregnant with my first son. Having been an immigrant, I know the difficulties immigrants face to integrate into a new society. They need strong advocate to fight for them to give them access to affordable housing, reliable public transportation and safe community. Adversity makes us strong but people working together to reduce adversity that makes us all stronger. I feel that it is time to listen to the concerns of Surrey residents. I am ready to fight for residents of surrey to make surrey an affordable and safe city to live. I have talked with many residents and I have heard what people

said. Among the key issues were public safety, public transportation, and housing affordability. I believe strongly that politic should be about people and elected official should advocate for issues that impact the residents of the community. Usually those with the loudest voices gain attention. It is time to listen to all voices. No voice is too small. If elected, I will provide community leadership by listening, by being open and transparent, and by being inclusive and responsive. council, City of Coquitlam The City of Port Coquitlam is facing challenges of housing and transportation due to a lack of cohesive pro active planning to receive and benefit from this population growth. There is an urgent need for designating the city with different levels of density. Increase in crime and lack of safety of the neighborhoods is another issue which needs attention; especially around the children’s play areas. The area around Fox Park is an example where the needles are being extracted on a regular basis. It is my intent to run as a councilor to bring this reality to the residents of Port Coquitlam and to help the City better plan to manage and benefit from the growth. We as a community must face up to the reality of
the growth of population and recognize the limited space that we have as a resource. Better planning in defining density zones will enable us to achieve sustainable growth and provide additional green space. This will lead to an improvement in the quality of life for all the residents.

Justin Trudeau fails on immigration: Rempel
OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, issued the following statement regarding reports that immigration consultants have been advising newcomers to lie about their identity in order to qualify for the Quebec Immigrant Investor Program: “This is yet another example of the Liberal Government’s failure to ensure our immigration system is fair and orderly. Last year, our Immigration Committee identified problems with the current system, including the fact that the regulatory framework does not adequately protect the public. This allows for abuse and exploitation by fraudulent consultants to persist. “Our immigration system is so complex that some feel pressure to enlist the help of third parties such as lawyers or immigration consultants. Unfortunately, we are hearing of the prevalence of representatives taking advantage of these individuals. Without action, the integrity of our immigration system is at stake. “Instead of coming up with solutions to
address these issues, the Trudeau government voted against a common sense motion from Canada’s Conservatives to acknowledge that work needs to be done to protect newcomers from unscrupulous immigration consultants. “Justin Trudeau has failed on all counts to take action on this issue. We will continue to hold the Prime Minister accountable for his failure to maintain the integrity of our immigration system.” Office of Michelle Rempel

What is the Flu?
nfluenza, commonly known as the “flu,” is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract. What’s the difference between a cold and flu? The common cold and flu are both contagious viral infections of the respiratory tract. Although the symptoms can be similar, flu is much worse. A cold may drag you down a bit, but the flu can make you shudder at the very thought of getting out of bed. Congestion, sore throat, and sneezing are common with colds. Both cold and flu bring coughing, headache, and chest discomfort. With the flu, though, you are likely to run a high fever for several days and have body aches, fatigue, and weakness. Symptoms of the flu also tend to come on abruptly. Usually, complications from colds are relatively minor, but a severe case of flu can lead to a life-threatening illness such as pneumonia. More than 100 types of cold viruses are known, and new strains of flu evolve every few years. Since both diseases are viral, antibiotics cannot conquer cold or flu. Remember: Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. Two antiviral medications are available to treat flu. But there are no medications that specifically defeat the common cold. Antibiotics may be helpful only if there is a secondary bacterial infection. How are stomach flu and influenza different? “Stomach flu” is a popular term, but not a true medical diagnosis. It’s not uncommon to mistake gastroenteritis, which is what
stomach flu is, for the viral infection we commonly call the “flu.” Gastroenteritis refers to inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines). Viruses are the most common cause of stomach flu. With gastroenteritis, you may have symptoms such as abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. How is flu spread? The flu virus is spread from person to person through respiratory secretions and typically sweeps through large groups of people who spend time in close contact, such as in daycare facilities, classrooms, college dormitories, military barracks, offices, and nursing homes. Flu is spread when you inhale droplets in the air that contain the flu virus, make direct contact with respiratory secretions through sharing drinks or utensils, or handle items contaminated by an infected person. In the latter case, the flu virus on your skin can infect you when you touch or rub your eyes, nose, or mouth. That’s why frequent and thorough handwashing is a key way to limit the spread of influenza. Flu symptoms start to develop from one to four days after infection with the virus. Who’s at greatest risk for flu

complications? While anyone can get flu, infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and HIV are at highest risk for flu complications. Despite advances in flu prevention and treatment, the CDC estimates that deaths related to influenza range from 3,000 to 49,000 deaths in the United States each year. Specific strains of flu can be prevented by a flu vaccine, either a flu shot or nasal spray flu vaccine. In addition, antiviral medications are available to prevent flu. These
drugs may help reduce the severity and the duration of flu and are best used within the first 48 hours of the appearance of flu symptoms. Are there different types of flu viruses? Researchers divide flu viruses into three general categories: types A, B, and C. All three types can mutate, or change into new strains, and type A influenza mutates often, yielding new strains of the virus every few years. This means that you can never develop a permanent immunity to influenza. Even if you develop antibodies against a flu virus one year, those antibodies are unlikely to protect you against a new strain of the flu
virus the next year. Type A mutations are responsible for major flu epidemics every few years. Type B is less common and generally results in milder cases of flu. However, major flu epidemics can occur with type B every three to five years. Type C causes infection but does not cause typical flu symptoms. Both influenza A and B have been linked to the development of Reye’s syndrome, a potentially fatal complication that usually affects children and teens under age 18. Widespread outbreaks of Reye’s syndrome have occurred with influenza type B and also with chickenpox, but other viruses have been implicated. The risk of Reye’s syndrome is increased when taking aspirin, so children should not take aspirin. Most influenza viruses that infect humans seem to originate in parts of Asia, where close contact between livestock and people creates a hospitable environment for mutation and transmission of viruses. Swine, or pigs, can catch both avian (meaning from birds, such as poultry) and human forms of a virus and act as hosts for these different viral strains to meet and mutate into new forms. The swine then transmit the new form of the virus to people in the same way in which people infect each other -- by transmitting viruses through droplets in the air that people breathe in. What is avian or bird flu? Bird flu, or avian influenza, is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. Bird flu epidemics have occurred worldwide. Bird flu is a leading contender to be the next pandemic flu bug because it has caused an unprecedented epidemic in poultry and wild birds across Asia and Eastern Europe. Still, no one knows for sure whether this will cause the next human flu pandemic.

Province announces $240 million to improve senior care
VANCOUVER—The province has announced $240 million over three years to expand the number of care hours seniors receive in care homes. In an announcement on Tuesday at the Salvation Army Buchanan Lodge in New Westminster, Premier John Horgan said the funding will increase the numbers of direct care hours that seniors receive each day. Under this funding plan, $48.4 million this year will go to adding more than one million hours of care by converting part-time and casual staff to full time and hiring more staff. “We had a government that put 3.36 hours as the standard of care in the province, but we have not met that standard,” said Horgan, addressing a crowd of seniors at the care home. “You deserve better and we are here today to help make your life a bit better ... with this $240 million con-
tribution to ensure we can bring more staff and more people here to help you.” Since 2009, the ministry set a standard of 3.36 direct care hours per resident per day for seniors in care homes, but the provincial average was only at 3.11 per day in 2016. This new funding is expected to increase the average to 3.24 by 2019, and reach the goal of 3.36 by 2021. The funding will help to transition part-time and casual care workers to full time, with 500 aides expected to be converted this year, and 1500 expected at the end of the three-year period. “More than 50 per cent of care aides are part time or casual,” said Adrian Dix, provincial minister of health. “This is a huge opportunity to give people better quality of work and better consistency of care.” Source: thestar.com

Positive Vibes!

By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor e go to sleep each night and wake up in the morning to a new day with new opportunities - a day which is filled with power and freedom to choose. The minute we wake up, we can choose to get out of bed and make the most of our day or feel dread about the day ahead. This is nobody’s choice but ours. Generally, the way we start our day influences how we feel for the rest of the day. When you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to take a few deep breaths and find something that you’re grateful for (your children, partner, your health or nature outside your window). Take this time to be thankful for all that you have in your life instead of wasting your energy on thinking about what you don’t have. Instead of pouncing straight out of bed, simply observe your breath. Breathe in for a count of 4 to 5 and breathe out also for a count of 4 to 5 allowing everything to drop away. Notice how your breath enters your body, notice how your breath leaves your body, and notice the little pause between each breath. This will allow you to create a sense of peace within and it will also help get you into a good head space before your feet touch the ground. It feels good and it’s an amazing way to consciously set your energy and in-
tention towards your day moving, follow this with a nutritious breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and fuel your body to face the day ahead. Get clear about your intentions for the day. For example you can intend to have a productive day. You can intend to have quality time with your family and friends with no distractions or limitations. You can intend to have a fun and brilliant day. You can intend to have a calm and peaceful day. You can intend to learn something new or be helpful to someone. Whatever it is just be clear about what it is you want your day to be. In order to create, manifest, and attract it, you must first align your heart, mind, and spirit with your intention. In other words, you truly need to feel it! Many people don’t understand the power of thoughts, because they live every day on autopilot, doing most things out of habit, and therefore they create their reality unconsciously as if they’re wearing a blindfold. But whether we’re aware of it or not, we create our reality with our thoughts and behaviour. This means we have the power to choose to be a conscious, mindful creator and change our reality to what we really want it to be. Remember, you choose your thoughts, you choose your behaviour, you choose the outcome. And every choice you make determines how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally!! info:shabnam@skcounselling.ca

By: Asma Shmas e are just on the move, life goes on day by day? Hold on, wait, breathe, take a time out We need to pause and take a time out. We just on, try our best in the situations that come in our life. After few years have passed, one tiny moment we realize, oh my life passed this way, I wish I would have done that or this or perhaps not done that. When we are studying, we do not plan that seriously, we are most of the time not crystal clear as to what will be life after finishing studies, what career we are seriously interested. Sometimes the obstacles are hard, difficult, we give up. Job After studies, comes the time to get a job and work. Many times jobs are not available, job requires extra training, extra courses and certificates. The person who was not so clear about the field of work, gets more confused about their working status now. One gets a survival job, he or she is just there for a job. Years go on, time passes. Some people are brave and honest to take responsibility of their status on themselves. Some put the blame on others and situation. Some people just go on living, just accepting their laziness in sometimes making effort to improve and excel in their career. Then what happens next Some try to read books or watch videos on Youtube to improve, even counselling. We try to improve our life or have some mature thoughts to accept the life as is. Many people are still not able to accept or cope with the failures of their hopes or expectations of life. These feelings of failure, dissatisfaction affects our nature, our behaviours and others around us. By Asma Shums :

Shahzad ton helps Afghanistan Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman tie against India lift Bangladesh into Asia Cup final
Stockily built Mohammad Shahzad knocked a brilliant hundred as spirited Afghanistan pulled off a last over tie against India in the Super Four match in Dubai on Tuesday. Shahzad’s 124 laid the foundation of Afghanistan’s fighting total of 252-8 in 50 overs before bowling out India in 49.5 overs for the same total at Dubai stadium. Needing seven to win off the final Rashid Khan over, Ravindra Jadeja hit a boundary off the second ball before taking a single off the next. Last man Khaleel Ahmed then took a single but Jadeja holed out off the fifth to give Afghanistan a morale-boosting tie with the defending champions. India rested five top players — skipper Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar — as they had already qualified for Friday’s final. The winner of Wednesday’s match between Pakistan and Bangladesh will meet India in the final in Dubai. India were helped to 110 by openers Lokendra Rahul (60) and Ambati Rayudu (57) and at 166-3 they looked on course for an easy win but Afghanistan pulled back through key wickets. Rahul hit five boundaries and a six in his 66-ball knock while Rayudu’s
49-ball innings had four sixes and as many boundaries.Dinesh Karthik made 44 and Jadeja scored 25 to bring India closer but India could not cross the finish line. Spinners Rashid and Mohammad Nabi, and paceman Aftab Alam finished with two wickets apiece. Despite crashing out with two defeats Afghanistan can hold their heads high as they beat Sri Lanka and Bangldesh in the first round and only lost to Pakistan in the final over. Earlier, Shahzad knocked a fighting hundred and Mohammad Nabi scored 56-ball 64 to lift Afghanistan after they won the toss. The 31-year-old Shazad smashed seven sixes and 11 fours in his 116-ball 124 -- his fifth one-day century but first against a top nation. So dominant was Shahzad that fellow opener Javed Ahmadi was only five in a stand of 65, before India struck four times within the space of 17 runs. Left-arm spinners Jadeja (3-46) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-38) derailed the innings but Shahzad held one end, adding 50 for the fifth wicket with Gulbadin Naib who made 15 and another 48 for the sixth with Mohammad Nabi. Shahzad was finally out in the 38th over but by then had given a good platform to his team.
In the end, this loss might come as a minor relief for Pakistan. It can only be an indictment of the format and schedule of the tournament that a side could play so poorly and still be one game from a shot at the title. Pakistan, barely able to cling a performance together, finally had their flickering hopes of an unlikely Asia Cup triumph extinguished by a Bangladesh team that, on the day, simply did what needed doing with ruthless efficiency, dispatching Pakistan by 37 runs, and securing a final date with India. They had two men at opposite ends of their careers to thank for it, an epic rescue act from Mushfiqur Rahim followed by Mustafizur Rahman’s figures of four for 42 sending Sarfraz Ahmed’s men crashing out of a tournament they never really took off in. For all of the strides Bangladesh have made in limited-overs cricket over the years, this was still an exceptionally gallant effort from Mashrafe Mortaza’s men. They came into the match having just learned their talisman Shakib al Hasan would play no further part in the tournament. Tamim Iqbal hadn’t been available since the first game. Mashrafe himself would be limited halfway into the Pakistan innings, having injured himself taking a screamer at midwicket to effect arguably the most important dismissal of the
match - that of Shoaib Malik. This was no full-strength Bangladesh, but they made up for it with calculated, intelligent cricket, and an understanding that, in these conditions, they could play to their strengths. Chasing 240, Pakistan were slight favourites at the halfway mark, but Bangladesh gave them a taste of their own medicine, reducing them to 18 for 3 in the first four overs. Mustafizur was brilliant in the early overs, arguably the only one all tournament to get the new ball to move around occasionally. His variations were judged to perfection; he seemed to understand the Pakistan batsman’s psyche better than they did themselves. Both Babar Azam and Sarfraz failed to read the cutters, paying the price with their wickets and exposing Pakistan’s famously fragile middle order within the first five overs.................. It might have looked a bit shy at that point, but Mustafizur and the spinners were about to take over, and ensure Mushfiqur’s efforts wouldn’t go in vain. While they look ahead to the ultimate glory against India, the recriminations in Pakistan could be severe indeed. Source: Cricinfo

President Asif Ali Zardari 2008-2013
Between 2008 and 2013, or the time when the Asif Zardari-led PPP had held sway in corridors of power, the already-politicised NAB was ordered to closed down the corruption inquiries against almost 60 leaders of the ruling coalition – mostly from the PPP. The decision was taken at the Executive Board meeting of the NAB on January 29, 2011. If a few people, including top bureaucrats or federal ministers, were arrested during the 2008-2013 PPP tenure, it was primarily due to the suo moto notices of the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry-led Supreme Court. It was at this point that the Lawyers’ Movement that had been initially started by progressive groups of lawyers began its shift to the right as parties like PML-N and JI began to dominate it. It was also believed that PML-N had begun to bankroll the movement. The movement’s greatest presence was felt in urban Punjab and the NWFP. It was almost nowhere in Sindh and not at all in the province’s capital, Karachi. This was the first major protest movement ever since 1968 and 1977 in which Punjab participated wholeheartedly. The province had largely remained quiet during the movements against Zia and many of Musharraf ’s supporters in Sindh and Karachi suggested that Punjab only rises against non-Punjabi rulers. And not different has been the situation since May 2013, when Nawaz Sharif had bagged the popular vote to rule the country for the third time. One hardly finds any conviction and will of the ruling PML-N to make the corrupt stand in the dock---political expediencies perhaps! :dawn.com
