For Sharmarke Dubow, a refugee from Somalia, the Victoria municipal elections over the weekend were a ground breaking day — he cast a vote for the first time and was elected city councillor He ran under a slate called Together Victoria,. Ahmed Yousef said “It’s time for Maple Ridge to change course. It’s time to put residents and business first,” “I will strive to deliver policy that is based on consensus and the will of the citizens and businesses.”

‘Danger of Fabulous Freedom’ By: Gulshan Aalani Undoubtedly, democracy and ‘Freedom’ of all kinds is most loved in every corner of this world. Especially the Freedom of usage of Deadly drugs that has become most celebrated day of happiness. Every young people, even the Police officers have freedom to enjoy the joyous day of ‘Dangerous Drugs’. Proving the democracy and freedom goes hand in hand and is for all. Unfortunately, people aren’t aware of 2 kinds of freedom. One is known as ‘clean freedom’ contains the warning of ‘Red tape and Red Light’ rules and restrictions of ethics, legal and illegal of Kosher and Halal life style of good and evil ordained by the Supreme-Being Lord of the Universe. Disregarding the Red tape the clean freedom turns into the dangerous filthy freedom and dirty democracy that ruins the lives. The legalization of Pot, Cannabis and all the other dangerous Drugs is described as ‘Sticky situation’. As it’s tragic impact is already shown in some overdosed people ending up in the Hospital. Including some children by eating sweets and cookies that contains the drug-chemicals. Also it’s dangerous effect and bitter results are showing in the bad aggressive behavior, loosing temper, road rage, fighting and impair driving. That also warns us to keep calm, no retaliation and ignore the angry ones on drugs. Though, It is most absurd to give this freedom to naïve young ones aged 18, 21, or 25yrs. who gets overwhelmed easily and gets trapped in ecstasy of false happiness and enjoyment. As these drugs contains THC and other chemicals that affects the brain’s chemistry by releasing a high level of serotonin, which plays a role in regulating mood and behavior.

Why we should care about Muslim candidates?

By:Kauser Khokhar, Richmond, If the Muslim members are to succeed in any election, the BCMA, as one the largest Muslim organizations in North America, must take a leadership role and volunteer their time by going door to door delivering flyers, making phone calls, putting up signs and individual members should be donating funds to assist people in getting elected. Members who are brave enough to put their names forward in any election deserve our respect and complete support. They are doing our community a service by standing for elections. Their victory is a success for our community. These people will be your voice in government. In order to achieve this goal, the organization must lead its members and guide with a strategy which is both beneficial and advantageous with one target in mind. The BCMA leadership is afraid of getting involved in local, provincial and federal elections because they think that getting involved will impact their charitable status. If we refuse to help our members standing for election, we will remain a community who is helpless and will look to others for assistance. The membership must get the youth of our organi-

Bringing

zation to mobilize and assist with campaigns. We must do more to get youth involved in the election cycles for they are the future leaders of our community. While both the Muslim brothers and sisters were emphasizing the SOGI (Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity) issue, we unfortunately did not keep in mind the goal of electing our members. Both brothers and sisters were guiding others on how to vote and who to vote for. One sister had sent emails with instructions to vote for certain people in the Richmond election. Of those people, two were proponents of SOGI. The other two were Muslim brothers. Without any thought, the members have incorrectly guided others resulting in our brothers not succeeding in this election cycle and have helped the SOGI supporters win their seats. This election took a very wrong turn with the blame lying solely on the BCMA leadership. The leaders of our organizations do not comprehend the true value of getting involved in politics. The BCMA, MAC (Muslim Ass’n of Canada), the PCA (Pakistan Canada Association) and other Muslim organizations must engage in a more active and visible role in election campaigns especially when Muslim members are running for election in various government seats. We must actively support in every way to get our members elected. Lip service does not translate into campaign funds and votes. Muslim members did not receive adequate funds from individuals resulting in campaigns that fell short of success. One sister mentioned that everyone deserves our vote. I tried to inform her that everyone does not deserve your vote. The person who deserves your vote is the one you believe best aligns with your values and beliefs. Meanwhile, such organisations should agree upon a certain policy with regards to voting. It is upon the remainder of the Muslims therefore to accept and follow the decisions of these organisations. The basis for my statement is that unity among Muslims is obligatory. The impact and influence of our vote will be greatly diminished if we fail to vote as one voice, and instead each opts to follow our personal judgement, sometimes judgement that is ill informed regarding candidates and issues fac-

ing Muslims today. This cannot be achieved unless the Muslims agree on one voice or one strategy by which they can influence the elections. Muslims should be sitting at the table where public policy is being initiated and our voice must be present when policies are being formed especially when such policies may impact Muslims such as immigration and discrimination in many forms. Muslims are much spoken about, but very little is heard from them when groups are mentioned regarding the influencers of elections. It is especially distressing and disheartening to see that the Muslim voter turnout is consistently the lowest in Canada since many of us fled from undemocratic, authoritative and corrupt systems of governance where the true value of votes is often threatened and sometime left meaningless. This does not mean that since you are now in Canada that there is no further need to involve yourselves in politics. We must be engaged in Canadian politics so that we can influence future policies which will affect our children. Look no farther than our neighbors to the south. You get what you organize for and who you vote for. Keep in mind that anti-Muslim sentiment is slowly moving to Canada from the US which is evidenced by increased harassment and hate crimes against people of color and places of worship in every province. This sentiment will impact how Canadian policies are formed. The record numbers of American Muslims running for office in the midterm elections is in response to Trump’s anti- immigration and specifically anti-Muslim policies. So for all of my aforementioned family members, friends, and the general Canadian electorate, my one plea is simply this: Vote for the candidate who has earned your vote not the one who shows up at your masjid during the election season. The multicultural policies of the 1970’s enabled mass immigration into Canada. For those of us who came to Canada during this time we are fully aware of the benefits of the immigration policy that was enacted so that we could make Canada our home. We must not forget our duty to engage in our communities or overlook the potential of the Muslim narrative in Canada. Jazak Allah,

‘No corrupt person will get NRO,’ PM Khan vows in address to the nation

Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed the nation through a video message on Wednesday, reassuring people regarding the steps taken by his government to tackle the economic hardships faced by the country. Beginning his address with the “good news” about the financial package the government has secured from Saudi Arabia, he said: “We were trying for many days to get rid of this burden placed on us of the debt. We had to pay back

our debts otherwise we would have been faced with default.” “We have got an amazing package from Saudi Arabia... which has taken off the burden.” He said had the government approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout directly, it would have to borrow more money that would result in an increased impact on the poor segments of society. “So our efforts were geared towards getting loans from friendly countries,” he said, adding that now even if the government goes to the IMF, it won’t need as big a package from the lender. The premier said his government is in talks with two more countries, “and we expect a similar package from them”. If that is secured, he said, the burden of the loans on the salaried class will be minimal. Khan, whose address came a day after his visit to Saudi Arabia, also announced that Pakistan is trying to play the role of a mediator in the Yemen war involving the Kingdom.“We are now trying our best to the play the role of a mediator in ending the [Yemen] war,” he said, adding that Pakistan will try to play to its role in ending conflicts in the region and “bring all Muslim countries together”. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Wednesday assured that Saudi Arabia had placed no conditions in exchange for the bailout money it pledged to Pakistan during the premier’s visit to the Kingdom to attend an investment conference, DawnNewsTV reported. He made these remarks on Wednesday during an informal conversation with media persons in Islamabad. “We have received a total package of $6.2 billion,” the minister said. FM Qureshi said there has been no change in Pakistan’s role in the Islamic military alliance and asserted that “a clear

message has been conveyed to the United States that dialogue is the only way forward when it comes to the Afghanistan issue”.“Unless and until the Taliban are integrated into the system, it is not possible to move forward [to address the Afghanistan issue],” he said.“The US itself is currently trying for initiating talks with the Taliban. It is wrong to say that Pakistan must do everything. The Taliban are not in our pockets,” FM Qureshi commented. Speaking about the war-torn region of Yemen, the foreign minister said that Pakistan’s stance will remain the same, in that, the state does not believe in a military solution to the problem. He will not send our forces there,” he affirmed. Referring to the PakIran gas pipeline project, he said that there were difficulties in completing the project due to the fact it was marred by multilateral sanctions imposed by the United Nations and unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union. As the conversation turned towards relations with India, the foreign minister said: “India has no other option but to hold dialogue. Their war of words and blame games are nothing new.” FM Qureshi further said that it seems that India will come forward for dialogue in the run up to their general elections due to be held in April or May 2019. “We are in no rush either,” he stated for the record. UK could seek extension to Brexit the US is a ‘losing strategy’: report transition, says Theresa May Anti-Muslim campaigning in

Republican candidates claiming that Islam is a political ideology rather than a religion. Super PACs broadcasting a slew of television ads linking Democratic candidates to “terrorism”. Anti-Muslim cam-paign fliers sent out in areas across the country. With the US midterm elections slated to take place on November 6, a new pre-election report blasted these types of anti-Muslim campaigning tactics as a “losing strategy”. Published on Monday by the Muslim Advocates civil rights group, “Running on Hate” describes a swell of anti-Muslim campaign rhetoric throughout the era of US President Donald Trump. It documented 80 instances of “clear antiMuslim rhetoric” employed by political candidates in 2017 and 2018, adding that 64 percent of the candidates held office before or enjoyed a presidential en-dorsement. Scott Simpson, the public advocacy director of Muslim Advocates, explained that antiMuslim candi-dates have vied for “every level of government” office in “every region” of the country in the past two years. “Behind the world view pushed by these candidates is something very troubling: Muslims and non-Muslim allies are conspiring to take over the government to replace the constitution with Sharia law,” he told Al Jazeera. Republicans comprised all but two of the 73 cases in which the report identified party affiliation, and more than a third of the candidates listed alleged that Muslims are innately violent or pose a physical threat. “These conspiracy theories have had a constituency within the Republican Party for years,” Simpson said, adding: “Trump is an important part of this, but he didn’t originate it.” But with only 11 to 14 percent of the candidates listed in the report forecast to win, Simpson argued that targeting Muslims has proven to be an ineffective electoral strategy. “The vast majority of them are losing or are projected to lose in November,” he said. “What we saw in this report, and what we see every day, is counter to the conventional wisdom about this: The as-sumption that most Americans don’t like Muslims is incorrect.” In California’s 50th district, embattled Republican House incumbent Duncan Hunter

accused his Demo-cratic opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, of attempting to “infiltrate” Congress as part of a Muslim Brotherhood plot. Campa-Najjar, a 29-year-old Palestinian-Mexican-American, is a Christian. Mike Harrison, Hunter’s spokesperson, previously told Al Jazeera that “the national security concerns” surrounding CampaNajjar are unrelated to his Palestinian heritage.“It has absolutely everything to do with the fact that Ammar Campa-Najar has current, existing rela-tionships with the [Palestine Liberation Organization] and [the Council on American Islamic Relations],” he said, the latter referring to the Muslim civil rights group. Earlier this year, failed South Dakota congressional candidate Neal Tapio, who lost in the Republican primary vote, claimed the founder of a Sioux Falls mosque was potentially linked to the Palestinian or-ganisation Hamas. The evidence? Tapio’s ad said the mosque founder’s scarf looked like one worn by Hamas members. The video concluded: “Should we be concerned?” During the 2016 presidential race, Trump promised to ban Muslims from entering the US and suggest-ed a database to keep track of Muslim Americans. The following year hate crimes targeting Muslims spiked by 15 percent, according to a Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) report. Yet as anti-Muslim rhetoric balloons and hate crimes grow, a record number of Muslim Americans have entered political races across the US. Once in office, Trump implemented a travel ban, restricting travel to the US for nationals of six Muslim-majority countries. Prompted to run, in part, by Trump’s antiMuslim policies and comments, around 90 Muslims ran for office on the local, state and national levels in 2018, according to a Jetpac report published earlier this year. Alia Salem, a North Texas-based Muslim American and social justice activist, explained that civic and political organising among Muslims were already on the rise during former President Barack Obama’s time in the White House, during which the number of anti-Muslim hate groups grew massively. “With respect to the growing tension that Muslims from every different part of our community - con-servative, liberal and beyond - feel, a switch was flipped, especially since Trump’s election,” she told Al Jazeera. “It’s not just about voting anymore,” she said. “We need to actually write policy and be on the front lines of supporting people who advocate for our community.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Citing Russia, China, Trump vows to ‘build up’ US nuclear arsenal

President Donald Trump said the United States is ready to bolster its nuclear arsenal after announcing it is abandoning a Cold War-era nuclear treaty, as Russia warned the withdrawal could cripple global security. Trump sparked concern globally by saying

he wanted to jettison the three-decade-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) signed former US president Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader. In explaining his decision, Trump told re-

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has said Britain’s divorce deal with the European Union is 95 percent settled but admitted the problem of the Irish border remained a “considerable” sticking point. Addressing the British parliament on Monday, May said that the United Kingdom might ask for a short extension of a planned transition period to ease its exit from the European Union, or Brexit, which is due to take place on March 29, 2019. “There are some limited circumstances in which it could be argued that an extension to the implementation period might be preferable if we were certain it was only for a short time,” May told legislators in London. The prime minister was updating parliament on a summit of EU leaders in Brussels last week, where she attempted to make progress on an agreement on the terms of the UK’s withdrawal from the bloc. She reported progress on some issues including in areas of security, defence and Gibraltar, noting that “95 percent of the withdrawal agreement and its protocols are now settled”. Gibraltar, a British overseas territory located at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula and regularly claimed by Spain, will leave the EU along with the UK. But May also admitted that the question of how to avoid a so-called “hard border” between Ireland and Northern Ireland remained a major, unresolved challenge. “There is one real sticking point left, but a considerable one,” she said, referring to the Irish question. When Britain leaves the bloc, some form of border will have to be drawn between Northern Ireland - which is part of the UK and Ireland - which is an EU member - to allow for customs controls on goods, produce and livestock. Both the UK and the EU are keen to avoid a hard border, which would be policed and involve stops and checks at crossing points. The two sides accept that a “backstop” solution is desirable in the case that the UK leaves the EU without a comprehensive withdrawal agreement, although they disagree on what the backstop would entail. The EU has proposed a backstop that would involve Northern Ireland remaining in the EU customs union and large parts of its single market. This solution would effectively

re-draw the border between the UK and EU in the Irish Sea, an outcome that London is keen to avoid. May has proposed that the whole of the UK should remain in the EU customs union. Brussels is currently considering this but has not been prepared to accept the proposal so far. The EU has also volunteered to extend the post-Brexit status-quo transition period by one year. Currently, the transition period is due to close at the end of 2020. May said last week that she was open to an extension, a move that drew fierce criticism from members of her Conservative party. On Monday, she reiterated the position, stating that the UK might need to ask for a short extension “as an alternative to the backstop”. “I have not committed to extending the implementation period,” she said. “I see any extension, or being in any form of backstop, as undesirable.” Reporting from London, Al Jazeera’s Nadim Baba said May’s position as leader of the party seemed to be in jeopardy, amid rumours of leadership challenges. “It seems to be getting ever more precarious,” he said. “We are hearing that centrist Conservative MPs are now joining dozens of others who have sent letters to the party chair, asking them to basically trigger a leadership contest.” Baba added that May is expected to hold a cabinet session on Tuesday, before possibly meeting backbenchers a day later. “We’ve had rumours of challenges before and they’ve gone nowhere - but the clock really is ticking,” he said. “Many people say that this is just to add pressure on her not to give in to Brussels in terms of that transition period.” Source: Al-Jazeera

porters in Washington that Russia had “not adhered to the spirit of that agreement or to the agreement itself ”. “Until people come to their senses, we will build it up,” he said, referring to the country’s nuclear stockpile. “This should have been done years ago. “It’s a threat to whoever you want. And it includes China. And it includes Russia,” the US president continued. “And it includes anybody else who wants to play that game. You can’t do that. You can’t play that game. “Until they get smart, there’s going to be nobody that’s going to be even close to us.” Russia, however, has warned abandoning the agreement would be a major blow to global security. Moscow was ready to work with the United States to salvage the agreement, the Russian Security Council said after a meeting between its chief Nikolai Patrushev and US National Security Advisor John Bolton. Bolton, who is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, was visiting Moscow in the wake of Trump’s announcement Saturday that he wants to do away with the pact, which bans intermediate-range nuclear and conventional missiles. Signed in 1987, the INF resolved a crisis over Soviet nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles targeting Western capitals.

Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected claims that Moscow has violated the pact, instead accusing Washington of doing so, and called Bolton’s upcoming meeting with Putin important. “There are more questions than answers,” he told journalists. Trump’s announcement has raised global concerns, with the European Commission urging the United States and Russia to pursue talks to preserve the treaty, and China calling on Washington to “think twice.” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said a unilateral withdrawal from the treaty “will have a multitude of negative effects”. Analysts warn the latest rift between Moscow and Washington could have lamentable consequences, dragging Russia into a new arms race. Putin last week raised eyebrows by saying Russians would “go to heaven” in the event of nuclear war and that Moscow would not use nuclear weapons first. “The aggressor will have to understand that retaliation is inevitable, that it will be destroyed and that we, as victims of aggression, as martyrs, will go to heaven,” he said. Putin and Trump will both be in Paris, France on November 11 to attend commemorations marking 100 years since the end of World War I. Source: Al-Jazeera

B.C. election: Doug McCallum to return as Surrey mayor

By Simon Little McCallum, who was first elected to council in 1993, served as mayor of Surrey from 1996 to 2005. The head of the Safe Surrey Coalition, defeated challengers Coun. Tom Gill with Surrey First and Coun. Bruce Hayne with Integrity Now in a bruising campaign that included allegations of attempted election fraud. His election heralds a big shakeup in Surrey politics, with big-ticket promises to radically change the city’s direction. McCallum pledged to do away with the Surrey RCMP, amid ongoing shootings as well as gang and drug crime. He’s promising to replace the Mounties with Surrey’s own municipal police force and a homegrown police

board. McCallum’s election could also put the brakes on the $1.65-billion light rail transit (LRT) project proposed for the city. The project has already secured funding from three levels of government, however McCallum argued at-grade transit will cause congestion, and says he wants to see the city pursue elevated SkyTrain instead. McCallum attempted a comeback in 2014, but was defeated by Surrey First’s Linda Hepner by about 20,000 votes. McCallum was unseated from the mayor’s office in 2005 by Dianne Watts, who later went on to found the Surry First slate in 2008. Surrey First has held the mayoralty since then. On leaving office, McCallum left Surrey with a $300-million surplus.

Vancouver election results made official

The votes have been verified and the Vancouver municipal election results are official. On Wednesday Vancouver’s chief election officer declared the official results of the 2018 municipal election. The election verification process this year included recounting more than 57,156 ballots from 50 polling stations. The large number of candidates (158) resulted in a longer than usual ballot which caused paper jams in the vote counting machines at some locations.“As a result of this

significant review, there are minor vote changes from the preliminary results for many candidates, but the final results do not change the final election standing,” reads a City of Vancouver press release. Once verified, the vote totals for all candidates went down by between 55 and 170 votes. In the end, mayor-elect Kennedy Stewart got 49,705 votes and second place finisher Ken Sim of the NPA got 48,748 — a difference of 957 votes. Source:.vancourier.com

George Harvie is retaining the lead for the Delta mayor’s seat with 10 of 33 polls reporting on election night. Jim Cessford continues to trail in second spot while Sylvia Bishop remains in third. In the race for the six councillor spots Alicia Guichon continues to be on top followed by Jeannie Kanakos,

Dan Copeland, Lois Jackson, Bruce McDonald and Dylan Kruger. Laura Dixon still leads school trustee candidates in votes while Nick Kanakos, Daniel Boisvert, Erica Beard, Val Windsor, Bruce Reid and Jessie Dosanjh also being elected as it stands.

Trump says ‘major investigation’ McCallum mum while Surrey transit underway after pipe bombs sent to plan run down minister. We’ll see how that goes first and CNN, high-profile Democrats foremost and then we’ll deal with that later,”

The head of Surrey’s Board of Trade is warning that mayor-elect Doug McCallum’s transit plans could hobble the city. McCallum’s pledge to flip a $1.65-billion Light Rail Transit project on its head in favour of a new idea for Surrey’s transportation future would thwart the city’s economic development goals and mire it in political deliberations, said Anita Huberman, the board’s CEO. Already on Monday, the topic of Surrey’s LRT project dominated question period in Victoria as provincial parties dug into opposing sides on the issue. “Transportation, and LRT in itself, has always been part of the economic development strategy to bring business here (and) keep business here,” Huberman said. “We will be left behind again in our city for transportation investments, and that just simply is not acceptable.” McCallum ran on a promise to scrap the at-grade Surrey-Newton-Guildford LRT project and instead start to build SkyTrain from King George Station to Langley “right away.” He also vowed to turf the RCMP in favour of a local force — another idea the board of trade rejects. Neither McCallum nor members of his government-to-be replied to interview requests Monday. McCallum’s campaign manager said the mayor-elect would be handling media calls personally. Huberman’s concerns about McCallum’s promise were twofold: Unlike LRT, SkyTrain cannot be easily expanded into other parts of the city. And deliberating a new approach to transit will eat up time the city can’t afford to spend as its population continues to swell. In Victoria, Premier John Horgan said McCallum will need to take his SkyTrain plan to other mayors in the region. “Certainly, his first port of call … will be the Mayors’ Council, not to me, not to the prime

Horgan said. He has previously stated: “We’re not scrapping LRT.” Andrew Wilkinson, the leader of the B.C. Liberals, said during a lengthy back-and-forth with the premier during question period that McCallum’s election victory showed voters have rejected the NDP’s LRT transit plan. Horgan said: “It is not an NDP plan. It is the mayors’ 10-year plan for transit in the Lower Mainland.” Other key players have expressed concern over McCallum’s idea, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose government is funding nearly a third of the project, and regional transportation authority TransLink, which has funded the remainder. Money for the project is not transferable and a new funding discussion would have to take place for a new SkyTrain project, Trudeau said last month. “We are moving forward with the Surrey LRT regardless of the outcome of the next (municipal) election. That money is flowing so that people get the transit they need,” he said then. Construction on the 10.5-kilometre, 11-stop LRT line was slated to start in 2020 with a target completion date in 2024. The city had also planned to extend light rail to Langley via the Fraser Highway. About $50 million has already been spent on the project, according to TransLink. As of last month, Surrey had spent $20 million for pre-construction work. McCallum’s bid to ditch the RCMP in Surrey could face its own set of troubles. The contract with the RCMP does not end until March 2032, and while it can be terminated on March 31 of any year, two years notice is required. Solicitor General Mike Farnworth said Surrey “is quite free” to develop its own police force. “Having said that, my responsibility as solicitor general is to ensure that there is effective policing in place, and obviously if Surrey were to move to another model they would have to have a developed alternative policing plan. So right now, it’s very much up to Surrey and how the new mayor and council decide to move forward,” he said. McCallum’s Safe Surrey Coalition dominated Surrey’s election on Saturday, winning seven of eight council seats in addition to that city’s top job. Source: Vancouver Sun

TSX has worst trading day since September 2015 as U.S. markets fall hard

TORONTO -- North American markets fell hard as Canada’s main stock index posted its worst day in more than three years Wednesday, just two weeks after recording another large broad-based decline. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 2.5 per cent or 376.04 points to 14,909.13, marking the largest single-day decline since Sept. 1, 2015 and surpassing the 336.65 point drop on Oct. 10.The decrease was led by the cannabisheavy health-care sector, which fell 5.9 per cent. But it also included the heavyweight materials, financials, industrials and energy sectors, which together account for threequarters of the Toronto Exchange. We’re in a risk-off environment that’s affecting all sectors except the safety sectors like utili-

ties (while) telecom is down very modestly,” says Anish Chopra, managing director with Portfolio Management Corp. Although it’s difficult to predict the market’s future path, he said there is an environment of slower global growth amid an era of increasing tariffs. “It’s hard to make a really bullish case for the TSX unless you see large increases in the commodity price environment and the solution to the pipeline capacity issue out west,” he said in an interview. The triple-digit market slide came as the loonie traded higher in the wake of an interest rate hike by the Bank of Canada. The Canadian dollar traded at an average of 76.75 cents US compared with an average of 76.35 cents US on Tuesday in the wake of the Bank of Canada’s decision to raise its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 1.75 per cent. In New York, American exchanges were walloped as they fell as much as 4.4 per cent. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 608.01 points to 24,583.42. The S&P 500 index lost 84.59 points to 2,656.10, while the Nasdaq composite shed 4.4 per cent or 329.14 points to 7,108.40. Source: ctvnews.ca OTTAWA

President Donald Trump condemned the series of attempted attacks on high-profile Democrats and CNN on Wednesday, declaring that “acts or threats of political violence have no place in the United States. Attempting a bipartisan pause during a divisive campaign season, Trump called for unity after crude pipe bombs targeting Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, CNN and others were intercepted Tuesday and Wednesday. Trump called the suspicious packages “despicable” and said a “major federal investigation” was underway. Coming just 13 days before the midterm elections, the attempted attacks underscored the deeply divided moment in American politics. The packages were directed at prominent Democrats and a cable network that have been singled out and criticized by Trump. At his rallies and on Twitter, Trump has frequently lambasted Clinton, Obama, CNN and others, often with menacing undertones. At a rally in Montana last week, for instance, Trump praised Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte, who pleaded guilty to assaulting a reporter, saying that “any guy that can do a body slam … he’s my guy.” And he has repeatedly singled out CNN as he rails against the “fake news” media, egging on his crowds as they jeer reporters covering his rallies and smiling as they chant “CNN sucks!” In his remarks at the White House on Wednesday, Trump described “suspicious packages and devices mailed to current and former high-ranking government officials,” and urged the nation to come together and send “one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.” “We’re extremely angry, upset, unhappy about what we witnessed this morning, and we will get to the bottom of it,” said Trump, who has sometimes struggled to show empathy at moments of national sorrow. But criticism came quickly that the White House was failing to address the role that the president’s incendiary rhetoric has had in stoking tensions, with CNN President Jeff Zucker especially pointed in his critique. “There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media,” he said in a statement. “The President, and especially the White House Press Secretary, should understand their words

matter.” In her initial statement, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders condemned “the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and other public figures,” saying, “These terrorizing acts are despicable” and calling the perpetrators “cowards.” That statement was sent to reporters before news surfaced of the CNN package, but it was tweeted after the news had broken. Sanders later tweeted that the condemnation “certainly includes threats made to CNN as well as current or former public servants.” Trump’s campaign also apologized for an email it sent criticizing CNN less than two hours after that network’s New York headquarters was evacuated. Campaign chairman Brad Parscale said that it was an automated message and that the campaign does not condone violence against anyone who works for the network. At his campaign rallies and in the White House, Trump has at times casually endorsed violence. At an Iowa rally in 2016, he encouraged supporters to “knock the crap” out of protesters in the crowd. More recently, he told law enforcement officers not to be “too nice” when detaining suspects. Last year, he tweeted a video that showed him tackling and punching a person whose head had been digitally replaced with the CNN logo. But recently Trump has sought to flip the script on Democrats, citing their aggressive opposition to Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination as evidence that the party is a dangerous “mob.” Source: Global News

Would a municipal police force make Surrey safer ? Surrey’s mayor-elect is adamant that he will deliver on his campaign pledge to replace the RCMP with a dedicated municipal police force, but critics of the plan are raising concerns about how much the transition would cost, how long it could take and if it would ultimately improve safety in a city plagued by gun violence. “It will cost us a little bit more money for our police force, but the people of Surrey tell us very clearly they’re willing to pay a little more to make their community safe,” Doug McCallum told CTV News earlier this week. McCallum cited the fact that the city already owns much of the equipment and infrastructure used by Mounties, including vehicles and community police stations, and staff with the Canadian Union of Public Employees already run much of the administrative side. The federal government, he added, only pays 10 per cent of police officers’ salaries,

while the city covers the other 90 per cent. But another Metro Vancouver municipality that has considered such a transition said the move would likely cost more than just “a little bit more” and would be more complex than McCallum has made it out to be. “We have one-third of the size of a detachment that Surrey has, so if it’s going to cost us $19 million to $20 million dollars in transitional costs, how much is it going to cost Surrey?” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who was re-elected Saturday. FAITH On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) said: I am so self-sufficient that I am in no need of having an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else’s sake as well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he associated with Me. It was related by Muslim (also by Ibn Majah).

Why We Must Study Hadith Once Again?

Continue from last edition Dr Ovamir Anjum

Hadith Studies: An Intellectual Challenge for the Muslim Ummah Today Hadith is the only means by which we can know the Sunnah of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ and consequently the full meanings of the Quran in its proper context. But since the Hadith literature, unlike the Quran, is not a single, well-known, bounded text, but rather a baffling amount of literature collected over several generations—its authenticity and organization have been a great challenge. This challenge, however, was taken up by the great scholars of Islam, who duly produced the most amazing large-scale efforts in history— as allowed by the technology of the time—to protect and preserve everything that the Prophet ever said or did. The fact that some people tried to fabricate aḥâdîth shows that the aḥâdîth were deemed extremely influential and authoritative—nobody fakes a currency that has no value. All studies of early Islamic history, even by the most cynical and critical of non-Muslim scholars, have shown that the learning, teaching and preservation of Hadith were the focus of Muslim scholarship during the first few centuries of Islam. Because the aḥâdîth of the Prophet had such great currency at the time, so then liars and opportunists—as have always existed in all societies—fabricated aḥâdîth to accomplish worldly goals. History attests to the fact that our Pious Predecessors, who were chosen by Allah to be the recipients of His final message, did not fall short of their obligation to preserve the Sunnah: Colossal attempts were made to resist and eradicate this forging of aḥâdîth by the scholars and leaders. Thousands and thousands of scholars began to study, memorize, authenticate and preserve the Hadith literature. What Happened to the Traditional Scholarship of Hadith? It is still around: there are numerous scholars devoted to Hadith who have spent their lives memorizing, sorting and evaluating aḥâdîth. However, in my humble opinion after taking stock of Hadith studies both by Muslims as well as non-Muslims, I venture to say that there is a lot

that has not been done, and a lot that cannot be done without a serious revival of Hadith sciences and methodology. More rigorous historical research has unearthed even older manuscripts of Hadith than the canonical ones which we are used to as Bukhâri and Muslim—I mean specifically the collection of Abû Hurairah’s one hundred and forty reports that he dictated to his disciple, Hammâm ibn Munabbih. These aḥâdîth are found in either Bukhâri or Muslim, which is a tribute to the accuracy and veracity of these two collections. More such discoveries are possible, and Muslim historians must labor hard for them. Similarly, there is a lot that the scholars of today, both traditional and modern, do not know about the context, meaning and authenticity of many reports. For example, a tremendous amount of work is yet to be done in understanding the context of these aḥâdîth, thereby resolving conflicts and disagreements about their meanings as well as authenticity. What Can We—the Ordinary Muslims—Do about It? For the ordinary Muslim, it is no longer possible to turn a blind eye to this challenge, because it is no longer only a battle in the academy—in the echelons of Orientalism far removed from Islam and Muslims. It is rather a very pertinent, a very real-life battle. More and more young Muslims, in the West but ultimately everywhere in the world, are growing up reading, learning, discussing and internalizing these attacks on Islam and skepticism towards its authentic sources. The questions raised by skeptics, out of antipathy

or apathy, are becoming political weapons in some hands, and a means of social and financial gain in others. Legions of pseudo-Muslims and pseudo-scholars and pseudo-experts have mushroomed, and it is becoming an uphill battle, for unaware Muslims as well as non-Muslims, to figure out the true teachings of Islam. What can ordinary Muslims do about this? Doesn’t Hadith scholarship require a lifetime of study? No—not at all. It requires not one lifetime, but in fact many, many lifetimes. And that is precisely why we need ordinary Muslims, all Muslims, to worry about it. True, we need the piety and rigor of Al-Zuhri, Shuᶜbah, Imam Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and the painstaking precision of those like Imams Bukhâri and Muslim in the science of Hadith. But all excellence and success can start with ordinary Muslims: There is no clergy in Islam. As long as resourceful and educated Muslims keep sending their best and most productive young minds to the sciences of this world for seeking money, status and comfort, and as long as they abandon the sacred sciences for the drop-outs and the have-not to take on—or, worse yet, for non-Muslims to distort or misuse—we will never regain the intellectual superiority and convincing power of our faith. So long as these trends of neglect and negligence continue, we will keep losing both intellectual ground as well as our coming generations. The history of Islam, which I have drawn upon in posing the challenge, also gives us hope. As the great Indian scholar Abû Al-Ḥasan ᶜAli Al-Nadwi said, Allah has always raised among Muslims those who

have protected Islam against its enemies and awakened Muslims from their slumber. This time around, the task is big. I cannot emphasize enough that this work must be done by Muslims— believing, dedicated, and brilliant Muslim scholars. These must outdo all others in using the best historical and analytical tools. No science is completely objective, but especially the science of interpretation and historical criticism is deeply connected to one’s beliefs and worldview, to how much one understands or identifies with the texts or to the people whom one is writing about. Accordingly, things like interpretation of Quran and Hadith, or like their historical criticism, can never be correctly accomplished at the hands of non-Muslims or non-committed Muslims. Knowledge and certainty are inspired by Allah, as are arguments and counter-arguments about interpretation and authenticity, and so the belief and piety of the scholar are critical to his or her credibility. Muslims must reclaim in the light of modern methods and sciences once again the sciences that they pioneered: criticism, authentication and interpretation of reports. It is necessary that not only the foremost historians and interpreters of Islamic texts be Muslims, but that they be true Muslims—connected with the Muslim Ummah, and engaged with the struggle to establish Allah’s Din. This is precisely what our pious predecessors meant when they said: such and such scholar was “‘ ᶜâlimun ᶜâmil” and a “mujâhid”—that is, a righteous scholar, one who upheld the truth even against oppression and tyranny, and struggled in the way of Allah with a pure soul. Only then did the light of Islamic knowledge shine upon him. It is a historical fact, and an example of the amazing collected wisdom of the Ummah, that it never followed, revered as Imams or took its knowledge from non-Muslims, sellouts or hypocritical scholars. My purpose in writing this article will have been accomplished if even one father or mother decides, upon reading this, that they are going to devote their most brilliant child, boy or girl, to the study of the Hadith of the Final Prophet Source: www.aljumuah.com

Justin Trudeau failing to bring justice for victims of ISIS: Conservatives

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Pierre PaulHus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued a statement regarding the Trudeau government’s decision to vote in favor of the Conservative Opposition Day motion: “The Liberal status quo has failed to bring justice for victims of ISIS. That is why Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives put forward a common sense motion calling on Justin Trudeau to prioritize the rights of victims

of ISIS. The Prime Minister can accomplish this by tabling a plan to immediately bring justice to Canadians who acted as ISIS terrorists.“Despite supporting the Conservative motion, the Prime Minister cannot be trusted to actually take action once the cameras have stopped rolling.“This is evidenced by the fact that the Trudeau government has previously voted in favor of Conservative motions and has failed to take action. For example, in 2016 the Trudeau government committed, and failed to take action on the full scope of a previous motion regarding

the Yazidi genocide.“This happened again when the Trudeau government voted to immediately list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a listed terrorist under the Criminal Code of Canada. It has been nearly four months, and yet the Prime Minister has so far failed to follow through on this commitment. “Justin Trudeau has to date, failed to take action on key commitments. Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will hold him accountable to ensure he tables a plan that will quo and serve justice to anyone who left our take concrete action and change his status country to fight with ISIS.”

Legislation better protects temporary foreign workers from exploitation People coming to work in B.C. under the federal Temporary Foreign Worker Program will have better protection against exploitation and abuse as a result of new legislation that has been introduced.“Workers coming to B.C. want to feel safe, confident their rights are protected, and that abusive employers will be held accountable,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “The exploitation of anyone working in our province runs against the values of British Co-

lumbians. We need to shut any door that allows recruiters or employers to wilfully ignore and abuse the rights of workers in this province.” If passed by the legislature, the legislation will improve protection for workers and accountability of recruiters and employers by: requiring foreign worker recruiters to be licensed, and employers who recruit and hire temporary foreign workers to be registered.

October’s Islamic History Month Canada Celebrates in Masjid As Salaam

By: Anwer Qadir In 2007, the Parliament of Canada enacted October as ISLAMIC HISTORY MONTH with the objective to honour Muslim – Canadian community and recognize their valuable contribution in shaping and building our mother land – Canada. This year marks the 11th year of celebrating October as Islamic History month (IHM) across Canada. Masjid Al Salaam & Education Center – BC Muslim Association has annually proclaimed IHM since 2007. The City Councils from municipalities across lower mainland also issued proclamation supporting the important of IHM and recognized the contributing role of Canadian Muslims across our country in general and in British Columbia in particular. Hangout with Youth Part 2.0– Oct 14 On October 14th, a youth only breakfast cum workshop was conducted by Shaykh Daood; where participants enjoyed a full course Canadian breakfast courtesy of Chef Mahmood & Chef Hussain. Shaykh engaged the youth in various activities and provided platform for youth to discuss topics that are relevant to them. The Youth candidly discussed impact they can create

in society. Shaykh Daood stated that we can create a huge impact by reducing food waste. He showed a video about PAGPAG – a dish made from leftover food that was collected from garbage sites, cleaned and cooked so that people in slumps of Philippines can have at least one meal a day. In Canada we take food for granted and waste a lot. We can have huge impact by stop wasting food in our individual capacity from NOW! The youth also discussed approach toward substance and legalization of cannabis. Shaykh Daood guided the youth about teaching of Islam on this subject and importance of avoiding things which intoxicated the body, mind and harmful for individual and the fellows. More than 50 youths from Burnaby, Surrey and Tri city attended this workshop and expressed desire to have such sessions on an ongoing basis. If you have missed lecture then please check Masjid Al Salaam website http://org.thebcma.com/burnaby and You Tube Channel. These lectures will be uploaded in due course.

BC raises 62K for Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital

On Oct 14th, the BC Chapter of Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital arranged a fund-raising gala dinner at Taj Park Convention Centre in Surrey. Among the organizers were including Saif Pannu, Hamza Malik, Waseem Javeed, Adeel Haider, Ahmar Kazi, and friends . Mr. Raza Mirani and Zeeshan Ahmed were the masters of ceremony. The program began with the recitation of Holy Quran by Dawood Rai. Mr. Saif Pannu then welcomed the guests. Due to Civic elections, they invited many honorable politicians,

and Surrey Mayoral Candidates Tom Gill, Doug McCallum and City Councillors candidates to introduce themselves. After their speeches Mr. Pannu requested guest speaker, Dr. Faisal Sultan, CEO of SKMH who had specially came from Pakistan for this fundrasier. Dr. Sultan has been part of Shaukat Khanum from its early days. He explained the beginning of the hospital and the tireless efforts of current PM of Pakistan and Former Captain of Pakistan Cricket Team. The hospital is named after the mother of Imran Khan, who died after

battling cancer. Since its inauguration on 29 December 1994, two research-oriented tertiary level oncology hospitals have been built in Lahore and Peshawar in Pakistan and construction is underway for the third one in Karachi. The Lahore hospital is Pakistan’s largest cancer hospital and it’s home to the largest radiation oncology centre. The second hospital was inaugurated on 29 December 2015 by a cancer patient in Peshawar. Dr. Sultan eloquently described how none of the patients are treated for free. Rather, an advance payment has been

made on their behalf by donors like those in the audience. He shared details of the hospital’s accomplishments and future projects and emphasized on the importance of donations. A short auction was also held to assist in fundraising which included a bat and some cricket balls signed by Imran Khan. At the end of the event, $62, 000 were raised. After dinner, the guests had the enjoyed a beautiful musical performance by Aima Baig who has appeared on Mazakarat Dunya TV Show and Coke Studio.

Murder of Khashoggi a ‘heinous crime’: Trudeau says Canadians ‘expect Saudi crown prince consequences’ for killing of Saudi journalist Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Wednesday denounced the murder of critic Jamal Khashoggi as a “heinous crime”, insisting the kingdom was cooperating with Turkish authorities and “justice will prevail”. “The crime was very painful to all Saudis. And it is painful, heinous to every human being in the world,” Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in his first comments since the murder of the journalist. “Those behind this crime will be held accountable... in the end justice will prevail,” he said during an address to the Future Investment Initiative Forum in Riyadh. Saudi leaders have denied involvement in Khashoggi’s murder inside Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consulate on October 2, pushing responsibility down the chain of command. But the kingdom is under mounting international pressure over the killing amid US accusations of a monumental cover-up by the

Prince Mohammed, widely known as MBS, said Saudi Arabia was working with the Turkish authorities to investigate the case. “Many are trying to exploit the Khashoggi affair to drive a wedge between Saudi Arabia and Turkey,” he said.“But they will not succeed as long as there is a king named Salman and a crown prince named Mohammed bin Salman.” Source:dawn.com

Erdogan had promised that his speech in Ankara would give the “naked truth” about the killing and he gave a host of new details while still saying Turkey wanted answers to key questions, including who gave the orders. Hours before Erdogan delivered his speech to ruling party lawmakers, a major Saudi investment forum opened in Riyadh under the heavy shadow of the murder after key delegates pulled out.The murder of the Washington Post contributor has dam-

Parents: 15 Simple Winter Safety Tips for Kids

to keep healthy and

kids Simple ways to avoid winter colds safe It’s a common myth that cold weather

Contributor: Rajyalakshmi Rambhatla, MD Winter can bring lots of family fun — whether this involves sledding and romping around in the snow or just hanging around together at home. Here are a few ideas I give to parents to keep their kids warm, healthy and safe during winter. How to dress your kids (not like little adults) Parents with babies and younger kids should: 1. Adjust winter clothes for children’s needs. Dress babies and young children in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same conditions. 2. Keep exposure to the cold at a minimum. Babies and young children don’t have the same tolerance for cold that adults do. It’s important to limit time outside. 3. Don’t forget winter accessories. Remember warm boots, gloves or mittens and a hat, which make a big difference in keeping young children and babies comfortable.

causes colds, but it does not. Colds are caused mainly by viruses that we are more commonly exposed to in the winter. Viruses are spread even more easily when children are in school and in close contact with each other, typically through respiratory droplets in the air and on hands. Prevent colds and the flu by getting kids to: 4. Use soap and water. Washing their hands frequently will reduce the spread of germs. 5. Cover their mouth. Sneezing or coughing into the bend of their elbows also helps prevent spreading germs. 6. Get immunized. Keep vaccinations current, including the flu shot (for children 6 months and older). Be safe on sleds and snow tubes 7. Always supervise children. Injuries can occur quickly when kids are sledding or snow tubing. It’s important to keep a close eye on them. 8. Keep away from motor vehicles. Often,

sledding hills are not far from highways or roads. It’s important to keep a safe distance. 9. Sled in proper ‘form.’ Kids can prevent injuries by sledding feet first or sitting up, instead of lying down head-first. 10. Find a clear area. Pick a sledding location that is clear of obstructions like trees or fences and is covered in snow. 11. Choose a good sledding hill. A sledding hill should not be too steep, with a slope of less than 30 degrees, and should end with a flat runoff.

Be safe on skis and snow boards 12. Dress in layers. If you begin to sweat, remove layers as needed to stay dry. Wet clothes can cause your body to chill and can lead to hypothermia or frostbite. 13. Wear a helmet. It’s important to protect your head from injury. 14. Protect skin. Keep your skin from being exposed to harsh temperatures to avoid frostbite. Be especially careful with small areas of your body, such as your hands, feet and ears. 15. Be aware of weather conditions. Consider going inside if the temperature drops below 0 degrees F (-17.8 C). Be aware of frostbite symptoms. If you notice your child skin turning red or becoming numb, move to a warmer location and protect them from further exposure. Use warm water or blankets to raise their body temperature. In winter, there are lots of options for fun. Enjoy the snow, and stay safe. Source: health.clevelandclinic.org/

Anything Is Within Your Reach!

T

By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor

we take which are two important things that makes any achievement possible. Thinking and planning are essential but without positive action, all the time spent on planning would be wasted. In the absence of strong will, we easily get shattered by negative events that cross the paths of our endeavor. We must have absolute confidence in ourselves and that alone will bring out our inner strength. There is no point in asking ourselves, “Will it be possible for me?” Instead of doubting your capability, repeat the statement “It is possible for me”. Anything and Everything Is Within Your Reach.

here is nothing that is difficult or easy but it is only our perception that makes it look so. Any work seen as a whole, may be threatening but when divided into parts, becomes simple and easy. Instead of being dazed by the magnitude of the task, start working and even if you do a little everyday, within a short period of time you will be surprised by your achievements. The problem with many of us is that even at an initial stage we are baffled by the enormity of the task and give it up as an easy way escape. If we are sincere in undertaking a job, we would analyse ways and means of doing it. Lack of sincerity and erroneous perception often frightens us from undertaking any task. When we have strong willpower, the goal alone will remain constant in our memory and every challenge that comes our way, will convert into an opportunity for achieving our objective. As we are conditioned by external influences, both environmental and individual, info:shabnam@skcounselling.ca sometimes some unfavorable events happen on which we have no control. These unfavorable events make a negative impact on our effects and may throw us into a despondent mood. The best thing is to face situations, work out a strategy to get over difficulties and with will power go ahead with life. Such an approach to take on challenges is called character, which is essential for achievements in life. What is important is your perception of things and situations. It is the faith in our ability to retrieve lost ground and the action

Vote For or What For!

By: Asma Shmas

e all were thinking last week whom to vote for and had a question in the back of their mind why, on what basis, do we decide whom to vote for. We are given right to select, decide and accept certain things and people. This is very big responsibility. Freedom is very important and serious responsibility. It is decision power given to oneself with the package of its consequences. At the same time to have one’s rights to have is also a very big responsibility to enjoy as it comes with the awareness of worthy of our rights and duties towards people who do their duty to give us our rights. What For Whatever we do, we would like to do, or we want, wish for – we have to ask ourselves “What for”. What is that thought, that belief, or principle we believe in, what is our intention behind it. The intention or “niyat” as it is called makes us convert it into action. Our intention makes us walk on certain roads which lead us to the place where we stand, where we create our past, present and future. This affects not only us but others as well. Top To Bottom It is very easy to fall from first steps to the bottom or other steps. It is difficult to climb so fast. Every human being thinks or acts, behaves and changes according to this or her personality, how he or she is grown up, from the genes he or she is born with to how one grows from childhood. The inner good or bad qualities inside a person always remain in him or her. Yes of course, education, good training, attention to life makes any person. Sometimes a person changes from outside but deep inside he is the same. Some people really work on themselves and change for better. Education and Society Education plays very pivotal role in one’s life. By education we do not mean only book knowledge but a knowledge which is grasped, thoughts which are learned and given attention to. We are encouraged to do volunteer work from our schools, community. This puts the seed of serving humanity, being kind and serves the fellow human beings and society at large, it teaches us to tolerance, softness, ability to feel pain and problems of other human beings.

The Circle When any human being is taught good values, good behavior in the family, it grows further in schools and universities, he or she gets the direction of life, career and becomes worth citizen. When people are genuinely involved in serving the society or some people who reach that stage in their lives where they are capable of serving the humanity with their thoughts, actions and resources. They should come forward and we should elect them. It is mandatory to have the love and efforts of social services in a person. This is very responsi-

ble field which is directly connected to the growth of society. A Great Responsibility Both candidates and voters are equally responsible for the future of society. What is happening today is going to play a major role in creating history for future generation. No voting is small. The Role of Happy Family The qualities, the beliefs, principles, honesty, justice, right or wrong, being fair, awareness of each other’s rights and duties, importance of sharing, being kind and helpful, discipline, etc., all these qualities are instilled on a large scale from childhood, that goes farther in a person when he or she grows up to be adult. Better Luck Next Time Let us prepare our children to be worthy human beings to be good citizens in the future and let us create a society by our efforts where the atmosphere becomes better for the future. DIWALI !

iwali, or Dipawali, is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali)of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. Diwali, celebrated in October or November each year, this year it will be on November 7. originated as a harvest festival that marked the last harvest of the year before winter. India was an agricultural society where people would seek the divine blessing of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, as they closed their accounting books and prayed for success at the outset of a new financial year. Today this practice extends to businesses all over the Indian subcontinent, which mark the day after Diwali as the first day of the new financial year. Indians celebrate with family gatherings, glittering clay lamps, festive fireworks, strings of electric lights, bonfires, flowers, sharing of sweets, and worship to Lakshmi. Some believe that Lakshmi wanders the Earth looking for homes where she will be

welcomed. People open their doors and windows and light lamps to invite Lakshmi in. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith: Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Hindus interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live: •In northern India they celebrate the story of King Rama’s return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana by lighting rows of clay

Non-Hindu communities have other reasons for celebrating the holiday: •In Jainism, it marks the nirvana or spiritual awakening of Lord Mahavira on October 15, 527 B.C. •In Sikhism it marks the day that Guru Hargobind Ji, the Sixth Sikh Guru was freed from imprisonment. •Five Days of Diwali •On the first day of Diwali, people consider it auspicious to spring clean the home and shop for gold or kitchen utensils. •On the second day, people decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using colored powders or sand. •The third day is the main day of the festival when families gather together for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi followed by mouth-watering feasts and firework festivities. •The fourth day is the first day of the new year when friends and relatives visit with gifts and best wishes for the season. •On the last day of Diwali, brothers visit their married sisters who welcome them with love and a lavish meal. http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/

lamps. •Southern India celebrates it as the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. •In western India the festival marks the day that Lord Vishnu, the Preserver (one of the main gods of the Hindu trinity) sent the demon King Bali to rule the nether world. In all interpretations, one common thread rings true—the festival marks the victory of good over evil.

Balancing Our Inner and Outer Worlds

BY: MANSOOR ALAM It is now known that the old theory of a static Universe is no longer tenable. Modern science has revealed that there is nothing fixed or static in the Universe, and it has been expanding ever since it came into existence. Thus, by nature of its creation, our Universe is dynamic and everything in it is perpetually changing. Our Earth has been changing as well. Scientists say that it has taken millions of years and several eons of adaptation for it to become suitable to support life. Our mountains, oceans, deserts, and forests have traded places on Earth through the shifting sands of time; so has the life that it supports. Some species have come and gone and others have adapted to change. These natural changes have occurred everywhere on Earth: in its air, on its land, and under its seas. Here also, there is t is now known that the old theory of a static Universe is no longer tenable. Modern science has revealed that there is nothing fixed or static in the Universe, and it has been expanding ever since it came into existence. Thus, by nature of its creation, our Universe is dynamic and everything in it is perpetually changing. Our Earth has been changing as well. Initially, the self-destructive forces produced by following such a course remain relatively imperceptible, thus producing a false sense that their power will last forever. But as time goes on, these na

History is full of such stories: ancient Babylon, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Rome and even some parts of the New World are now graveyards of powerful civilizations. This destruction is not a random act but is the result of their wrong actions based on the law of the rise and fall of nations. Actually, there are two aspects of this law i.e., two sides of the same coin. Both are essential, for the rise, growth, and the moral and intellectual advancement of a nation: i) knowledge of the forces of the outer world, and ii) knowledge of the forces of the inner world within human beings. One without the other is bound to lead to ultimate destruction of any civilization. But first of all, let us be clear that a nation cannot hope to recover from its abyss unless it changes its inner self. Stopgap measures or doing patch up work only to treat the symptoms would only prolong suffering and would not cure the disease. A nation needs a fundamental change in its outlook, its psychology, and its attitude if it truly wants to change its destiny. We are finding we were wrong. Life is not as simple as that.” [J.W.T. Mason, Creative Freedom, pp 183-4.] “Man has created a new world with its own laws and destiny. Looking at his creation, he can say, truly, it is good. But looking at himself what can he say? … While we have created wonderful things we have failed to make of ourselves beings for whom this tremendous effort would seem worthwhile.” [Erich Fromm, Psychoanalysis & Religion, pages 1-2] Why does the West fail to deal with the complex problems of humankind? After all, the West came to their current methodology after a long, hard fought battle with the Church resulting in the constitutional separation of the Church and the State. The answer may actually lie in the very principle of the separation of Church and State which essentially created a dualistic self: one private, the other public; one related to the Church, the other related to the

Musharraf suffering from amyloidosis, has difficulty standing and walking: APML leader

Former president retired General Pervez Musharraf is said to be suffering from a rare disease amyloidosis, DawnNewsTV reported on Wednesday, citing All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) Overseas President Afzaal Siddiqui. Last month, former APML chairperson Dr Muhammad Amjad had revealed that Musharraf was “growing weaker rapidly” due to an unspecified illness and cannot return to Pakistan to face the treason case against him. The APML leader had then refused to provide details about Musharraf ’s new ailment, saying the party would soon submit medical documents to Chief Justice

Saqib Nisar. However, Siddiqui disclosed Musharraf ’s illness on Wednesday, saying the former general’s condition has “weakened his nervous system”, and that he is currently being treated in London. ”Due to amyloidosis, broken protein starts getting deposited in various organs,” he explained. “[As a result] Pervez Musharraf has difficulty in standing and walking.” The APML said that amyloidosis can lead to “arteries of heart and brain to choke up, which could prove to be life-threatening”. Siddiqui said that doctors have “managed to stop the production of broken protein” in Musharraf ’s system and “are now trying to cleanse his body”. He further said that Musharraf ’s treatment could continue up to five or six months, adding that the former president has “appealed to the nation to pray for him”. Upon his full recovery, Siddiqui said, Musharraf intends to return to Pakistan. On March 31, 2014, Musharraf was indicted for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007. He, however, left the country in March 2016, for Dubai to “seek medical treatment” and hasn’t returned since. Source: Dawn.com

High Commissioner assures full support to Pakistani Origin Students in Canada

OTTAWA, Canada: The High Commissioner of Pakistan Tariq Azim Khan has assured Pakistani Origin Students in Canada of full support for their plan of activities to promote true image of Pakistan in the Canadian Society. In a meeting with a delegation of Pakistan Students Association (PSA) University of Ottawa, Tariq Azim said that Pakistanis students must avail the life changing opportunities offered by postsecondary education at the Canadian Universities. The High Commissioner said that Pakistani Origin Students should actively

participate in local and international events at the Universities to promote true perspective of Pakistan. Tariq Azim emphasized that it is important to actively participate in the communities in which we live, to promote good will between our two Countries and promote the positive contributions of Canadians of Pakistani origin in our society. The Students briefed the High Commissioner on the activities they plan to promote understanding of Pakistani culture among the Canadian and international students of the University.

Pakistan beat Australia by 66 runs in first T20

A youthful Pakistan crushed Australia by 66 runs in the first Twenty20 international in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Pakistan scored 155-8 in their 20 overs as Babar Azam struck an unbeaten 68 before Imad Wasim took 3 for 20 to bowl Australia out for 89 in 16.5 overs — their joint-third lowest total in all T20 Internationals. Paceman Faheem Ashraf and Shaheen Afridi both took two wickets apiece for Pakistan. Fast bowlers Billy Stanlake (3-21) and

Andrew Tye (3-24) were the main wickettakers for Australia. Australia left out paceman Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Nathan Lyon and included leg-spinner Adam Zampa in their XI. Pakistan were without senior batsman Shoaib Malik who joined the team late as he was with his wife, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, for the birth of their first child. The second and third matches will be played in Dubai on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Source: Dawn.com

Church, the other related to the State; one subjective, the other objective; one devoted to Sunday, the other devoted to the rest of the days. Thus, God became associated with the private life of citizens while the State took control of their public life. Forces within the inner world of human beings thus became disassociated with the forces of their outer world. This created tension in people’s inner and outer worlds. All the power the West has mustered through the control and mastery over the outer world seems unable to control the destructive forces of its inner world. One has become bright and shiny while the other has remained dark and gloomy. The fullness of body and emptiness of the soul are the obvious manifestations of practicing this Western approach to life. In the words of Erich Fromm: “Ours is a life not of brotherliness, happiness, contentment but of spiritual chaos and bewilderment dangerously close to state of madness --- not the hysterical kind of madness which existed in the Middle Ages but a madness akin to schizophrenia in which the contact with reality is lost and thought is split from affect.” “Those who try to find a solution by returning to traditional religion are influenced by a view which is often proposed by religionists, that we have to choose between religion and a way of life which is concerned only with the satisfaction of our instinctual needs and material comfort…Priests and ministers appear to be the only professional groups concerned with the soul, the only spokesmen for the ideals of love, truth, and justice.” [Psychoanalysis & Religion, pages 1-2.] Contrary to the approach practiced by the West, the past glory of Muslims in Science was not the result of separation of science and religion. Those revolutionary Muslim scientists were truly devoted to religion while carrying out their scientific studies. There were no contradictions between their scientific thinking and their religious thinking. In fact, the driving force behind their scientific discoveries was the Quranic command to observe the signs of God spread throughout the Universe (3:189-191, 16:48, 21-30-32, 23:18, 26:7-8, etc.).

The achievements of those Muslim scientists were truly astounding—maybe more than the Western scientific achievements— because they were pioneers in creating and advancing so many branches of new knowledge (without the modern facilities enjoyed by later scientists). It may even be fair to say that there would not have been a Western renaissance in such a short time without Muslim achievements in science. Western historians of science (e.g., Robert Briffault, George Sarton, John W. Draper) generally recognize the fact that the West actually built its scientific superstructure on the giant shoulders of great Muslim scientists of the past. So, there we have it: two distinct approaches to science. One may be called the isolationistic approach, the other holistic or integrated approach. These two approaches create their own distinctive social, cultural, and moral environments. This is where the second aspect of the rise and fall of nations comes into play. The inner soul of the Western society is suffering from its isolationist approach even though it has acquired unprecedented power over the forces of nature through science. Poet Iqbal (1877-1938) has beautifully captured this dilemma of the West thus: He, who seeks the path of stars in the outer world; Could not travel the path of his own thoughts! He, who has captured the rays of the shining Sun; Couldn’t find the morn of his life’s own dark night! In other words, human reason can subdue the forces of nature but cannot by itself find a satisfactory solution to the complexity of the problems of humankind. The holistic or integrative approach is the only way to balancing both aspects of human existence: material (the outer world) as well as spiritual (the inner world) which is: 1) to acquire knowledge of the forces of the Universe and 2) to use its power for the benefit of all humankind without any discrimination whatsoever. This is how we can create long-term balance between the outer and inner worlds. Source: Islamicity.org
