Is TLP here to stay?

E are reeling from another ‘surrender’ of the state. The hyperbole surrounding the ‘surrender’ was as extreme as was the praise that followed the prime minister’s speech earlier. From the withdrawal of a tweet to these recent two dharnas, ‘surrenders’ come thick and fast in Pakistan. And none of them are of the ordinary kind; each is a ‘surrender’ worthy of a comparison to 1971. It’s a wonder we have any territory left. But the last two ‘surrenders’ — to the TLP — by the PML-N and the PTI have once again highlighted the state’s relationship with religiopolitical parties, which since the start of the Afghan war has always focused on the Deobandi groups. However, the rise of Khadim Rizvi and the TLP may change this. Until recently, our angst was reserved for the state’s flirtation with and nurturing of Deobandi groups. From the Afghan war to the Kashmir issue in the ’90s, these groups were used in the neighbourhood as a cost-effective measure to further policy goals. And if in the process we had to pay a price domestically — sectarian violence being a case in point — it was deemed not too high.

Until recently, our angst was reserved for the state’s flirtation with Deobandi groups.

(There were a few unusual voices such as Vali Nasr who focused on electoral politics and how the state’s appropriation of Islam meant that Pakistan was one of the few Muslim countries where religio-political parties remained rather marginal in electoral politics. This was quite

unlike most of the Muslim world where the opposition to the state inevitably took the shape of a religiopolitical party such as the Muslim Brotherhood or the clergy in Iran. But the more publicised argument always was about the adverse effects of the patronage of the militant groups.) The post-9/11 world finally forced a change of thinking on the state. The change in policy was forced not by international considerations but by domestic compulsions. The spread of militancy from Fata to Swat to beyond and the spate of terrorist attacks in urban centres and the lives it cost forced the state to move against the use of violence. The relationship status became ‘complicated’. Some groups were abandoned immediately, some over time, with some a love-hate relationship continued while with others, the flirtation continued but more secretly than before. But for everyone, the Deobandis, the troublesome children, were the focus of attention. The Barelvis, on the other hand, were the peaceniks no one worried about. In fact, in the post 9/11 world, the latter were even given donor support in order to nurture the more ‘peaceful Islam’ as if the problem were of interpretation rather than politics. But 2010 brought a change in this bifurcation. The assassination of Salmaan Taseer and the chain of events it set off has culminated in the rise of the TLP which seems to combine a threat of violence with an electoral challenge. However, the threat of violence — so far — seems to be of a different kind than the Deobandi groups

present. If the latter were feared for violent militias and the challenge they posed to state authority by controlling pockets of territory (as the TTP did), Barelvi violence has rattled society by mob violence. Since the assassination of Taseer, there have not been any more such high-profile killings by believers of this school of thought — whether this is because the former governor’s death put an abrupt end to the debate he provoked or for other reasons is unclear. The rest of the violence around his death (from Shahbaz Bhatti’s assassination to Taseer’s son’s kidnapping) was linked to the TTP. There is a level of convergence between the Barelvis and Deobandis on the emotive issue of blasphemy, but generally the parties within the electoral system tend to stand up for the blasphemy law. This doesn’t appear to be an issue where the militant groups and TLP are standing together. Other than that, the TLP has opted for electoral politics where some analysts argue that more than the vote bank of the PML-N, the party has eaten into the votes of the more mainstream religio-political parties such as the Jamaat-i-Islami and JUI-F. But despite its more mainstream choice, its relationship with the state is not as simplistic as the one portrayed. Its street protests and the related violence seems to rattle the state enough to think that there is no option but negotiations. During the previous dharna, it was assumed that the protesters were encouraged to some extent by the civil-military disconnect, but this time round, it’s hard for anyone other

than conspiracy theorists to accept this argument wholly. And yet, the end of the protest differed only in how quickly it came. Another way to look at it would be to consider the language Rizvi and others around him used for state institutions and for those heading them. Such abusive language would not be uttered by the leaders of Deobandi groups, especially not those who take part in electoral politics. Take the case of the accusations against a senior military official which Rizvi and his cronies mentioned in his speeches. This accusation was first brought up by a Deobandi figure (who has also been part of parliament) and within days he recanted — undoubtedly because of the displeasure expressed by those in power. However, no one seems to be in a position to wield a similar influence over Rizvi. Neither is the TLP mob violence or street protests as controllable as, say, the protests by the Difa-iPakistan Council, which has both Barelvi and Deobandi parties under its umbrella; however, the stronger ones are from the latter school of thought. DFC’s protests are turned on and off, with little fear of the situation spiralling out of control. It is too soon to assess the impact the TLP will have on the country’s electoral scene (usually parties with a one-point agenda do not manage to last long in the election cycle) or the religio-political scene in general. However, its efficacy in mobilising people — for votes or protests — do not indicate a short political life or impact. But a more realistic evaluation will require time. By: Arifa Noor (journalist.)

‘Respect, Sympathy & Blaspheme Law’! By: Gulshan Aalani

Religious Rivalry, cannot end unless mankind would follow most important rules of ‘respect and sympathy’, to bring harmony and solidarity in the most toxic world that is full of anger and hatred of each other mainly on religious issues. In some cases it is shown the most heinous way by killing the innocent ones like the killing of Jewish worshipers in the Synagogue. Our heartiest condolences to the survivor- victims. I personally have experienced the most horrendous abuses of Islam, Quran, and personal abuses by filthy pornography emails calling me kafir for accepting Islam. but keeping in mind the perfect tolerance of Prophet Muhammad SAWS against his enemies, helped me a lot. Although to keep such patience is not possible for us the ordinary people. Though, such abuses are due to the lack of respect, understanding and recognition of the Divine authority of the Universal Creator GOD, therefore, it is utmost essential to make them aware of the truth of reality of Divine authority of GOD and HIS final Messenger SAWS. Without doubt the abusers of Allah’s religion, HIS Divine Book of final Revelation

Quran, HIS final Prophet, and female Uniform of Hijab should be punished under the blaspheme law to teach them a lesson of good conduct and respect. At the same time we must not forget to use the same justice system of Prophet SAWS, who was known as most noble, trustworthy, truthful, patient and had good relationship with Jews, Christians and other tribes even before and after his Prophet-hood. Such of his characters reflected in his daily life. When the Prophet was invited for dinner, a non-Muslim Hostess poisoned his food to kill him, he was warned by Allah of poisoned food, she was caught and accepted her guilt, but instead of punishing her he forgave her. SubhanAllah. He also forgave the Neighbor who was throwing garbage at his house entrance. In other occasion the town people out of hatred throwing stones at him, he was injured, bleeding, and the Angel appeared and asked for his permission to destroy his enemies, but he answered: No, they don’t know me yet, give them time to understand my mission from GOD”. Similarly Messiah Jesus (AS) on the Cross said: Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”. A street walker at the Water Well saw a thirsty Dog and fed him water from the Well using her shoe, due to her action of sympathy and empathy, pleasing to Allah, her past sins were forgiven and she earned a place in Paradise. So sharing cup with Christian can’t be illegal. In case of Farm labourer Pakistani Christian lady Aasiya Bibi accused of insulting the Prophet SAWS, spent 8 yrs in prison and now acquitted but with lots of opposition, proving anti-sharia- anti-Prophet practice.

Council of Canada (ISCC) and Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) strongly condemn Saturday’s terrorist attacks on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, USA. An alleged terrorist identified as Robert D. Bowers, 46, a Pittsburgh resident shot worshipers during Shabbat services, killing 11 and wounding six in the deadliest attack on Jews in the history of the United States. “It is shocking and extremely disappointing that hate is on the rise. No one is safe, not even worshipers in the sanctuaries.”, said Imam Syed Soharwardy when arrived yesterday in Calgary from his visit to Vatican City where he met Pope Francis. Islamic Supreme Council of Canada and the Muslims Against Terrorism stand shoulder to shoulder with the Jewish community in Pittsburgh and around the world. We express our deep sympathies and condolences with the victims and their families. We pray for the speedy recovery of those who were wounded. We urge all people of faith to unite against all forms of discrimination, racism, hate and violence. ISCC and MAT strongly condemn all forms of anti-Semitism, AntiChristian and Islamophobia. The only way we can save our society from such hate-mongers is to unite as people of faiths. We keep our differences in beliefs, but we all share our common humanity and By: Imam Syed Soharwardy its values. We need to safeguard (Calgary) The Islamic Supreme what we share.

First of all it was absolutely wrong and absurd to oppose her drinking water from the same Cup just because she was a Christian. If it was for the other common reasons of the danger of sharing the cup for the health hazard that is understood, but provoking her was wrong. It is understood that in anger most undesirable things are uttered, especially when it comes to the religious rivalry, we become friends of Satan and insult the Prophet and the Holy Revelation Quran. Let’s keep in mind to follow the best of tradition of Prophet SAWS, follow his ways, deal with pure justice, and not our own whims and desires full of anger and hatred. We need following clarification from the Pakistan authority. Why did she use the same cup? Did it belong to the Muslim lady only who objected to her using her cup? Why did she leave her cup there? Why didn’t the Farm authority keep more cups? Why didn’t they inform the workers not to use other people’s Cups? Was Aasiya Bibi made aware of what sin has she committed by insulting the Prophet? Was she asked to apologize? Her apology should have been sufficient. However, a Mother of 3 children shouldn’t have imprisoned for 8 yrs. (Naouzoobillah). Just think what the Prophet’s verdict would be? Forgive her and let her go free.

Pakistan blasphemy case: Asia Bibi freed from jail

A Pakistani Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy after spending eight years on death row has been freed from prison, her lawyer says. Some reports say Asia Bibi has boarded a plane but its destination was not known. The Supreme Court ruling sparked protests from Islamists

and the government had said it would bar her from leaving Pakistan. Her husband had said they were in danger and pleaded for asylum. Pakistan’s ‘historic’ Asia Bibi ruling Why Pakistan’s Christians are targeted Blasphemy laws around the world Asia Bibi, a mother-of-five, was released from prison in the city of Multan, her lawyer Saif Mulook said. Also known as Asia Noreen, she was convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet Muhammad during a row with neighbours. Several countries have offered her asylum. The Pakistani government has said it will start legal proceedings to prevent her going abroad after agreeing the measure to end the violent protests. Many of the protesters were hardliners who support strong blasphemy laws and called for Asia Bibi to be hanged. One Islamist leader said all three Supreme Court judges also “deserved to be killed”. A spokesman for the hardline Tehreek-e-Labaik (TLP) party said Asia Bibi’s release was in breach of their deal with the government. Source: Dawn.com

SC takes up NAB’s appeal against IHC’s suspension of Sharifs’ sentences in Avenfield case 604.505.5452

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday challenged before the top court the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) decision to suspend the punishments of the main accused in the Avenfield corruption case. The IHC on September 19 had granted bail to Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt retired Mohammad Safdar after suspending their respective prison sentences handed down by an accountability court. A three-member Supreme Court special bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, heard NAB’s appeal. NAB’s counsel argued that the IHC had crossed a line by commenting on the facts of the case, which, he argued, could only be done if the convict’s life was in danger or if the date of appeal was not fixed for a long

period of time. The anti-graft body said that the IHC had instead commented on the facts of the case while hearing a constitutional petition. The CJP pointed out that the NAB counsel had given similar arguments earlier as well. He further agreed that the court could not comment on the facts of an ordinary case, but said this case was a special one. He then directed Nawaz’s lawyer, Khawaja Haris, to present his arguments.“The verdict was issued on a writ petition,” Justice Nisar said, noting that the IHC had declared that the evidence provided by NAB in the case was questionable. “How can the high court point out faults in evidence while giving a verdict on an appeal for bail? This is what NAB has challenged,” he observed. He added that the apex court had earlier rejected NAB’s appeal out of “mercy”. “How about we nullify [IHC] verdict?” asked the chief justice, before telling Haris to produce “one court verdict” that can be considered as precedent to justify the IHC’s decision. Haris responded saying that the case against Nawaz and his family was that of assets beyond income, but that the assets in question belonged to Nawaz’s children and it was up to NAB to prove that the assets exceeded their income. The CJP, however, said that if Nawaz had admitted that his children owned the Avenfied properties, he must also provide details of his income at the time they were purchased. He noted that according to income tax laws, the burden of proof lies on the accused. Source: Dawn.com

CJP takes notice of ‘huge losses of lives, property’ in riots following Aasia Bibi verdict

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday took notice of the “loss of lives and property caused to the general public” in riots that followed the court’s acquittal of Aasia Bibi last week. On October 31, the SC had acquitted Aasia Bibi — a Christian woman previously condemned to death on blasphemy charges — after accepting her appeal against her sentence. The top court’s decision had angered reliogiopolitical parties, including the Tehreek-

i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), which had taken to the streets and staged violent sit-ins and protests across the country. The protests had at times escalated into riots, with protesters setting vehicles on fire and on one occasion even pillaging the push cart of a child selling bananas. The chief justice, according to SC spokesperson, today took notice of the “losses of property and lives caused to general public” with the intent to “compensate the victims who lost their valuables

or properties during the tragic incidents”. The notice, the court added, was taken on media reports that significant losses were caused to the general public in the wake of the apex court’s verdict in the Aasia Bibi case. Furthermore, the chief justice has directed the federal and provincial governments to furnish within three days their reports detailing the estimated losses.

Pakistan’s immediate balance of payments crisis is over: finance minister

Finance Minister Asad Umar on Tuesday claimed that Pakistan’s “balance of payments crisis is over” and assured that China is committed to providing short-term relief to Pakistan as well — the modalities of which, he said, will be discussed in a new round of discussions in Beijing on Friday. “The long-term solution to the balance of payments crisis is to increase our exports, and to do that we should have enough income so that we do not need to borrow,” Umar, who was a part of the Prime Minister Imran Khan-led delegation that visited China recently, explained during a press conference today. “In this regard, we have received a commitment from the highest level. ”Regarding the doubling of our exports, we are not talking long-term. We have [this target] for the ongoing year. We have also discussed

short-term reliefs. A decision in principle has been taken, but to discuss its modalities our contingent is going to Beijing on November 9. “So this curiosity that the people have will also be resolved soon. We had told you about the $12bn financing gap, of which $6bn have come from Saudi Arabia, and the rest has come from China so the immediate balance of payment crisis of Pakistan has ended. I want to make that clear in unequivocal terms. We do not have any balance of payments crisis now. “ A statement released by the finance ministry echoed Umar’s remarks, adding that “a senior level delegation comprising of federal secretaries of finance, foreign affairs, planning & development and commerce along with the State Bank of Pakistan’s governor

will undertake a visit to China during the current week to work out the modalities”. Foreign minister says Pakistan ‘out of the woods’ after China trip Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, meanwhile, claimed that the trip to China was “productive to the extent that we are out of the woods”. The foreign minister said that the purpose of the visit to China was to “send a message to the international community” and also “move the two countries’ strategic relationship towards an economic partnership”. He said that a total of 15 memorandum of under-

standing (MoUs) were signed in China, of which he highlighted a quartet. “We decided that our strategic dialogue must be upgraded and its level be raised to the FM level,” he said. “It was also decided to transfer our citizens sentenced there and theirs sentenced here so that they can serve their sentences in their own countries. Trump sunk Republicans in the House. But he likely helped them in the Senate.

(CNN)The result of the 2018 midterms will be argued over for weeks to come. Democrats can rightfully claim that a blue wave propelled them to a House majority. Republicans, on the other hand, can say that said blue wave hit a red wall in the Senate, where the GOP gained seats. What the two sides probably can agree on is this: The results were all about President Donald Trump. Indeed, this midterm was more about feelings toward a president than any other in recent history. Trump scored a rather low 45% approval rating in the exit polls, compared with a 54% disapproval rating. That 9-point split was reflected in what looks to ultimately be a 7- to 8-point Democratic advantage in the national popular House vote. A deep dive into the exit polls makes the same general finding: Those who approve of Trump voted Republican, while those who disapproved of him voted Democratic. Approvers went for Republican House candidates by 88% to 11%. A look back at exit polls since 1982 (when presidential approval was first asked on an exit poll during

a midterm) reveals that this 77-point margin was the largest ever for the president’s party among those who approved of the job the president was doing. Disapprovers went in the complete opposite direction. They voted for Democratic House candidates 90% to 8%. That 82-point margin among disapprovers was the largest for the opposition party in midterms since 1982 as well. In the House, this proved to be a disaster for Republicans. The President was, to paraphrase him, on the ballot in every congressional race in the nation. Given that all voters were able to render a decision in the House, this meant an unpopular president resulted in a Democratic-controlled House. The President perhaps realized this when he chose his final campaign stops. He mostly ignored House races and focused on key Senate matchups throughout the country. Consistently the President visited states that he won in 2016. This strategy, combined with his polarizing rhetoric over issues like Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation battle and the migrant caravan, proved to be smart in Trump’s efforts to retain the Senate. It probably contributed to Republican voters coming home and voting for Republican candidates. Consider the key Senate races of Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia. His approval rating was at or above his disapproval rating in all these states. With the exception of West Virginia, the Republican Senate candidates won Trump approvers by at least a 76-point margin in all these races. Source: cnn.com

North Korea issues nuclear threat ahead of high-level talks with US

(CNN)As the United States and North Korea prepare for another round of high-level talks this week, Pyongyang’s increasingly heated rhetoric has analysts worried that the stalemate between the two sides could lead to a breakdown in negotiations. An official with North Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a veiled threat Friday, warning that Pyongyang could restart “building up nuclear forces” if the US does not ease the crippling sanctions levied on North Korea. The comments come ahead of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s meeting with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol, in New York this week. The piece, carried in North Korea’s state-run news agency KCNA, accused Washington of believing the “foolish idea that the DPRK came out to the negotiating table, yielding to the sanctions” and failing to understand that “the improvement of relations and sanctions are incompatible.” The Trump administration has long held that sanctions levied on North Korea by the United Nations and the US would not be lifted until North Korea gave up its nuclear weapons and the world community was able to verify that it had done so. Pompeo called the commentary “stray voltage” in an interview with CBS News and said

he’s not worried about rhetoric from North Korean media. “We know with whom we’re negotiating. We know what their positions are. And President Trump has made his position very clear: no economic relief until we have achieved our ultimate objective,” he said. Risk of talks collapsing Experts say the hardline negotiating positions staked out by both sides have resulted in a protracted stalemate. North Korea is only willing to give up its nuclear weapons once it has established a peaceful and trusting relationship with the United States; the United States is only willing to form a peaceful relationship with North Korea until after it gives up its nuclear weapons. This type of posturing could easily spiral out of control, as it did in 2017, says Adam Mount, a senior fellow and the director of the Defense Posture Project at the Federation of American Scientists. “This is a more direct threat to collapse talks and resume the nuclear program at full speed than we’ve seen since negotiations since started. So in that regards it’s a shift from their previous position,” Mount said. However, experts like Mount say the North Korean position does not come as a total surprise -- staking out hardline positions in state media ahead of diplomatic meetings has long been a favored tactic in Pyongyang’s playbook. “It’s a clear play for leverage, it’s a clear play to set the agenda in the upcoming round of diplomacy, but there’s still a very real risk that it does seriously damage the negotiation process.” Source: www.cnn.com

Jamal Khashoggi case: All the latest updates

Turkish security source says Gina Haspel, who visited Turkey last week, has seen all evidence in connection to killing. Saudi Arabia has admitted Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside its consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul. Khashoggi - a Saudi writer, US resident and Washington Post columnist - entered the building on October 2 to obtain documentation certifying he had divorced his ex-wife so he could remarry. After weeks of repeated denials that it had anything to do with his disappearance, the kingdom eventually acknowledged that the murder was premeditated. The whereabouts of his body are still unknown Egypt’s leader faults media coverage of Khashoggi slaying The president of Egypt has said media coverage played a “negative role” in the case of Khashoggi. “We need to stop and wait for the relevant authorities and judicial bodies (in Saudi Arabia) to announce the outcome of the investigations,” Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi told reporters on Tuesday. Last month, Egypt called for a transparent investigation into the disappearance of the journalist and warned against the case being used to politically exploit Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt have a close relationship. The kingdom has given Egypt billions of dollars in aid in recent years. EU urges Saudi cooperation with Turkish authorities The European Commission has called on Saudi Arabia to collaborate with Turkish authorities on investigating the killing of the Saudi journalist. “We expect Saudi institutions to provide all the information they have about the case and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. This needs to be done in full collaboration with the Turkish authorities,” commission spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said on Tuesday. “From the very beginning, we have been asking Saudi Arabia to shed light on the killing of Jamal Khashoggi through a full credible, transparent and prompt investigation,” she added. In a non-binding resolution on October 25, the European Parliament condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the reported torture and killing of the journalist. The parliament urged an “independent and impartial”, international probe of the killing, also warning that targeted sanctions could be imposed if Saudi agents are found guilty in his death. (CNN)More than 200 mass graves containing the remains of thousands of victims have been found in areas formerly controlled by ISIS, a United Nations report revealed Tuesday. Both the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) documented 202 grave sites in total, but anticipate more will be discovered in the coming months and years. The grave sites, which may contain up to 12,000 bodies, were found in the northern and western Iraqi provinces of Nineveh, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and Anbar. The smallest grave site, found in west Mosul, contained eight corpses, the report says, and the largest -- which is believed to be the Khasfa sinkhole south of Mosul -- may contain up to 4,000 bodies. ISIS -- the militant group that is also known as ISIL -- seized large areas of Iraq between June 2014 and December 2017 and members declared them as part of a so-called caliphate. The report notes that the group led “a campaign of widespread violence and systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.” Forensic material could prove war crimes The graves, the report says, could contain

critical forensic material that will not only be able to help identify victims, but also “build an understanding around the scale of abuses and violations that occurred” and determine if acts amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide. UNAMI and OHCHR said ISIS’ victims include women, children, elderly people and those with disabilities, members of Iraq’s armed forces, police and some foreign workers. The director of human rights at UNAMI, Suki Nagra, told CNN that the key message was that the excavations and exhumations should be appropriately protected and preserved. “The mass graves should be treated as crime scenes and that any evidence that’s extracted from them should be used in criminal prosecutions in the future in line with international standards. “For us, the biggest issue is that the truth comes out of what actually happened -- for the victims -- and that the evidence from the results of the exhumations from these mass graves is actually used for criminal prosecutions,” Nagra said. Caught on cam: Fleeing suspect bitten Trudeau says Trump’s wrong, tariffs by police dog on Granville had no effect on NAFTA negotiations Dashcam video has surfaced showing Vancouver police chasing a suspect back and forth across busy Granville Street before a canine officer catches him and sinks its teeth into his leg. The dramatic video was posted onto YouTube Monday, but appears to show the final moments of a tense foot pursuit that happened last week near Granville and Southwest Marine Drive. It shows the fleeing suspect trip and fall in the middle of the road, giving the police dog a chance to latch onto him. At least seven officers, most of them in plainclothes, then approach the man and begin punching and kicking him as they place him in handcuffs. Police said they were trying to arrest three break-in suspects on the afternoon of Nov. 30 when one of the men bolted and allegedly tried to carjack two vehicles to escape, including a taxi. The YouTube video begins with a man approaching a cab near the Chevron gas station before several unmarked police vehicles pull up and officers begin running toward him. The suspect runs across all six lanes of traffic in a desperate bid to evade police before turning back toward the Chevron, where he falls down and is placed under arrest. Graham Scott Beattie, a 40-year-old Surrey resident, has since been charged with two counts of breaking into a dwelling and one count of attempted theft of an auto over $5,000. The accused, who had to be taken to hospital after the arrest, appeared in court

Tuesday with a gash several inches long on his right cheek. His case was adjourned until Friday. Two counts of breaking into a dwelling have also been approved against Richmond resident Harold Jason Gillis, 42, and Vancouver resident Joseph Leon Kidd, 34, is facing one count. Though officers managed to arrest all three suspects, the incident was an embarrassment for Vancouver police – a second canine officer that was involved in the chase attacked a 75-year-old bystander. Const. Jason Doucette said the victim just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. “Our goal here is to arrest the bad guys and ensure public safety, and in this situation something didn’t go as planned,” Doucette told reporters last week. “Our dog bit someone that wasn’t the intended target.” The senior had to be treated in hospital as well. PM Trudeau cheers ‘historic’ number of women elected in U.S. midterms OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a moment on the morning following the U.S. midterms to highlight the “historic” number of women elected. As of early Wednesday, American media were projecting approximately 100 women would win seats in Congress, the largest number ever. Across the United States, women campaigned in record numbers in congressional and gubernatorial races. “That’s obviously good news,” Trudeau said to reporters on his way into the weekly Liberal caucus meeting on Parliament Hill. Democrats took control of the House of Representatives, while Republicans held on to their majority in the U.S. Senate. Trudeau congratulated all candidates who

put their names on the ballot, and said his government looks forward to working with the new members of Congress on “a broad range of issues, as we have in the past.” Source: ctvnews.ca

Pakistani PM Visits China as Fiscal Crisis Looms

BEIJING — Pakistan’s new prime minister, Imran Khan, is in China on a four-day visit, his first trip to the country since taking office in mid-August. The visit comes as the Pakistani government struggles with a financial crisis and as it looks to foreign countries for aid, while negotiating a bailout with the International Monetary Fund. On Friday, Khan met with China’s president, Xi Jinping, and told him that his country is going through a “very difficult” economic situation. Neither Xi nor Khan said anything about possible aid to Pakistan in front of reporters, but China’s leader did talk about his commitment to China-Pakistan ties and

what he called their “all-weather strategic partnership.”Pakistan has dealt with the question of bailouts before, but the situation is dramatically more complex this time as it seeks an $8 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Questions are growing about the country’s ability to pay back loans connected to China’s massive infrastructure and trade plan known as the Belt and Road. One of the initiatives’ biggest projects is the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). At the same time, however, Washington has stressed that the U.S.-backed IMF should not provide Islamabad with funds to pay back loans to China.

(CNN)Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says US tariffs weren’t the reason he was willing to agree to a new trade deal earlier this year-- dismissing President Donald Trump’s argument that the duties on Canadian goods forced his hand. “On the contrary, we have been open from the very beginning to negotiate a new and modernized NAFTA,” Trudeau said Monday in a wide-ranging, exclusive interview with CNN’s Poppy Harlow. “We were always willing to come to the table, to sit down and negotiate. And we have,” he said. Trump claimed in October that he was able to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico thanks to his hard-nosed tactics, including a willingness to impose new tariffs. “Without tariffs, we wouldn’t be talking about a deal,” Trump said. He then mocked politicians opposed to tariffs as “babies.” Trump imposed tariffs earlier this year on steel and aluminum imports coming from around the world, including from allies like Canada and Mexico. He also threatened to impose new tariffs on autos, and has levied taxes on $250 billion of Chinese goods as his administration continues to talk with China about a new bilateral trade deal. Trump and Trudeau have had a rocky relationship over trade. In June, the 46-year-old Canadian prime minister said after hosting the G7 summit in Quebec that he would be willing to retaliate over the metal tariffs -- which he then did. “Canadians, we’re polite, we’re reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around,” Trudeau said. His comments drew immediate fire from top Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow, who told CNN at the time that Trudeau “kind of stabbed us in the back.” But in his interview Monday, on the eve of the US midterm elections, Trudeau stepped carefully around questions about his relationship with Trump, who personally called him “dishonest and weak” in a tweet over the retaliatory tariffs. Both Canada and Mexico have responded to Trump’s tariffs by levying taxes on US goods including yogurt, cheese, pork, maple syrup and bourbon.“In politics, you get called a lot of things by a lot of different people,” Trudeau said Monday, when asked directly about Trump’s personal attacks. He added: “I have a good, constructive working relationship with the President, which is what Canadians expect me to have. But the connections between Canada and the US run so deep and so broad that the relationship is going to be fine regardless of who’s at the top on either side.” Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum and Canada’s and Mexico’s retaliatory tariffs remain in place. A Mexican official has suggested they won’t sign the new agreement until Trump lifts the duties. All three parties are due to sign it at the end of November, before a new Mexican president comes into office. Trudeau said he wouldn’t yet back out of the NAFTA replacement, which Trump has

called the US-Canada-Mexico Agreement, or USCMA. “We’re not at the point of saying that we wouldn’t sign if it wasn’t lifted -- although we’re trying to make that case,” Trudeau said. He added: “We would much rather have genuine free trade with the United States so we’re gonna continue to work, as soon as we can, to lift those tariffs.” In his conversation with Harlow, Trudeau repeatedly underscored his political and philosophical differences with Trump. Harlow asked Trudeau about his father, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, teaching him to trust people and followed up by asking if the Canadian leader trusts Trump. Trudeau sidestepped the question. “What my father taught me was to trust Canadians,” Trudeau said. “It was a way of looking at the electorate, of saying, you don’t have to dumb it down for them, you don’t have to scare them into this and that, you can actually treat people like intelligent, rational actors and they will rise to the occasion,” Trudeau said. Asked about the importance of a free press, which Trump often calls “the enemy of the people,” Trudeau said “I have been unequivocal, repeatedly, that a free press is fundamental to any democracy around the world, any free society. You have to have an informed populace ... and politicians [who] are being held to account from media.” And as the US charges toward the finish line of a divisive and often ugly midterm election marked by attempted political violence and nakedly racist ads promoted by a President who emphasized themes of fear, Trudeau spoke of the importance of finding common ground. “I think it’s always been easier in politics to divide people or to scare people than to bring them together,” Trudeau said. “I’ve chosen to try and bring people together, to try and look for those common grounds.” But he acknowledged that polarization is a problem in Canada, too. “The polarization we see in Canada and around the world -- people who don’t listen to each other anymore, people who are so sure that they are right that they won’t listen to anyone who disagrees and won’t -- will even dehumanize people who disagree with them,” Trudeau told Harlow. “The demonization of political opponents is something that is fundamentally counter to the idea that diversity of opinions, of perspectives, of backgrounds, should be a source of strength and resilience.” Source: www.cnn.com

A former cricket star and opposition politician, Khan has raised questions about the benefits CPEC brings to Pakistan. Khan’s PTI party, an acronym for its name in the Urdu language, has said the project is too heavy on infrastructure, has too many projects in India’s Punjab state and too much corruption.A review that the new administration has undertaken has so far has turned up no irregularities and Khan has softened his criticism some, but the visit may force Islamabad to choose between CPEC and the IMF. During his meeting with Xi on Friday, the prime minister voiced confidence in the belt and road project, and what he called the Chinese president’s vision of connectivity. Source: ctvnews.ca

F AIT H 1203. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “There are five acts which conform to the pure nature: Circumcision, removing of the pubic hair, clipping the nails, plucking the underarm hair and trimming the moustache.’’ [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. R.u Saliheen #1203

The wisdom behind the prescription to remove pubic hair and armpit hair? Commentary: on above Riyad us Saliheen Hadith # 1203 “Fitrah “ literally means beginning, innovation, invention or making something altogether new, but here it means instinct or such nature or disposition which is inborn. Some people have defined it as that old way which was liked by all the Prophets and on which all the Di vine laws had full agreement. That is to say, they are natural to man. In any case, one should adopt all these five good qualities in such a way as if they are a part of his nature. Moreover, they are also highly important from the point of view of cleanliness and purification

Question

W

hat is the reason for shaving pubic hair and armpit hair? What did they use to shave it with at the time of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)? Is it sufficient just to cut it or must it be shaved? Answer Praise be to Allah

Firstly:

The Sunnah indicates that it is prescribed to remove pubic hair and armpit hair. AlBukhaari (5889) and Muslim (257) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The fitrah is five things – or five things are part of the fitrah – circumcision, shaving

the pubes, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hairs, and trimming the moustache.” The wisdom behind the prescription of removing the hair from these two places – and Allah knows best – is that removing it helps one to attain a perfect level of cleanliness and prevents what could emanate from them of bad smells if the hair was left without removing it. And there are other reasons and wisdom behind it. Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: These characteristics of the fitrah may serve some religious or worldly interests, that one may notice by reflecting upon the issue, such as: improving one’s physical well-being; cleansing the body thoroughly; taking precautions to ensure purity when doing ghusl or wudoo’; doing a favour to one’s friends and companions by avoiding unpleasant smells that may offend them; differing from the practices of the disbelievers such as the Magians, Jews, Christians and idol-worshippers; obeying the command of the Lawgiver; preserving that which is mentioned to in the verse in which Allah, may He be exalted, said (interpretation of the meaning), “and [Allah] has given you shape and made your shapes good (looking)” [Ghaafir 40:64], because by doing so one is preserving that beautiful image – it is as if the verse implies: I have given you beautiful shapes, so do not distort them with anything that may make them ugly, and take care of them so that

It says in Musnad al-Imam Ahmad (26705), in the hadith of Ma‘mar ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): … When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) had slaughtered his sacrifice in Mina, he instructed me to shave his head. So I picked up the razor and stood by his head. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) looked me in the eye and said to me: “O Ma‘mar, the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has let you take hold of they will continue to be beautiful, for taking his earlobe when you have a razor in your care of them is a kind of adhering to hand…” dignity and maintaining harmony with others, because if a person appears handsome Thirdly: or beautiful, that makes others feel at ease The Sunnah with regard to the removal of with him, so people will listen to what he pubic hair is to shave it. In the case of armpit says and appreciate what he says, and vice hair, the Sunnah is to pluck it, but if a person simply trims it, there is nothing wrong with versa. End quote from Fath al-Baari. that, but it is not what is best. Secondly: Ibn Qudaamah (may Allah be pleased with What was well known at the time of the him) said: Shaving the pubic hair is mustaProphet (blessings and peace of Allah be habb and is part of the fitrah, and it is very upon him) was that they would use a razor inappropriate to leave it, so it is recomto shave their hair. mended to remove it, and whatever means Al-Bukhaari (5079) and Muslim (715) narone uses, there is nothing wrong with it, berated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah cause the point is to remove it. It was said be pleased with him) said: We were with the to Abu ‘Abdullah (i.e., Imam Ahmad): Is it Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of acceptable for a man to cut his pubic hair Allah be upon him) on campaign, and when with scissors, even if he does not cut all of it? we approached Madinah, we wanted to enHe said: I hope it is acceptable, in sha Allah. ter the city straight away, but the Prophet End quote from al-Mughni (1/65). (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy onsaid: “Delay it until we enter at night, so that him) said: Shaving the pubic hair is called the one who is dishevelled may tidy herself istihdaad in Arabic because iron (hadeed) up and the one whose husband is absent is used, i.e., the razor. That is Sunnah, and may shave her pubic hair.” the purpose behind it is to cleanse the area. Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy The best is to shave it, but it is permissible on him) said in Fath al-Baari: This refers to to cut the hair, pluck it or remove it with a the woman whose husband is absent. What depilatory paste…. With regard to plucking is meant is so that she may remove her pubic the armpit hair, that is Sunnah according to hair, and the word used in this hadith refers consensus. The best is to pluck it for the one to shaving, because that is the usual method who can stand it, but it may also be done by of removing hair, but that does not mean shaving or using a depilatory paste. It was that it is not allowed to use something other narrated that Yoonus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘laa said: than a razor. End quote. I entered upon ash-Shaafa‘i (may Allah have Al-Bukhaari (3989) narrated the story of mercy on him), and the barber was with Khubayb ibn ‘Adiyy (may Allah be pleased him, shaving his armpits. Ash-Shaafa‘i said: with him), in which it says:… when they I know that the Sunnah is to pluck it, but I [the disbelievers who had captured him] decannot stand the pain. cided to kill him, he asked to borrow a razor End quote from Sharh Muslim from one of the daughters of al-Haarith so by an-Nawawi (3/149) And Allah knows best. that he could shave his pubic hair, and she Source: https://islamqa.info lent it to him…

7th Annual Jalsah and Graduation Ceremony at Royal King Palace Hall

By: Anees Abdul Wahab On October 27, Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies held its 7th Annual Jalsah and Graduation Ceremony at Royal King Palace Hall in Surrey. This year Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah and the support of the community, 3 students graduated as Hafidh ul Qur’an. They are Hafidh Khubeb son of Mr. & Mrs. Iqbal Pathan, Hafidh Ammaar son of Mr. and Mrs. Zakir Ghogawala and Hafidh Ahmed son of Mr. and Mrs. Mohammed Kamran. It was an evening full of beautiful and inspiring recitations of the Qur’an, Nasheeds, Salat-alan-Nabi, plays and speeches on Islamic topics all performed by the students of the Madrasah. Shaykh Mohammed Oves Abdul Wahab and Shaykh Mohammed Anees Abdul Wahab acknowledged the sacrifices made by students and their parents in the pursuit of Islamic education. They then explained that not only are the students of the Madrasah taught Islamic studies such as learning to read the Qur’an correctly with Tajweed, memorizing verses of the Qur’an, praying and living our lives accord-

ing to the peaceful practices of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), but they are also taught to be law abiding, peaceful, productive and contributing members of Canadian society. The main event of the night was the Khatmul-Qur’an, the graduation ceremony of completion of the Qur’an. The graduates began and continued their Islamic Studies with Shaykh Oves and Shaykh Anees and after years of sacrifices and hard work these students completed Tahfeedh-ulQur’an. One amazing and remarkable aspect is that the students completed their Tahfeedh-ul-Qur’an while going to school just like other boys of their age. Many Scholars of Islam attended and graced the event with their presence. Guests from the lower mainland and guests from Toronto, from the U.S, from the United Kingdom, from India and other cities attended the event. The special guest speaker of the evening was Shaikh Riad Ouarzazi from Toronto. He spoke about the importance of seeking knowledge and encouraged the community to support the Institute. Dignitaries that attended the event included MP Sukh Dhaliwal and

leaders of local Muslim organizations. They recognized the positive impact of the Institute in the community. Shaykh Mohammed Oves Abdul Wahab informed the audience that the Institute suffers financial difficulties and is in need of assistance to carry on the many programs and services the Institute is offering. He then explained that the Institute is committed to financial transparency and the community is welcome to see the financial records of the Institute. Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah and generosity of the community $32,250 in pledges and $31,061 in cash and cheques was donated. At the conclusion of the event the founders of the Institute, Shaykh Mohammed Oves Abdul Wahab and Shaykh Mohammed Anees Abdul Wahab thanked the guests and volunteers and a sumptuous dinner was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Muslim Food Bank and Community Services New Warehouse Fundraising Dinner

By: Ms. Shatha Muhsen On Oct 26th, the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services held a dinner to raise funds for the purchase of a new warehouse. A lively night featuring several speakers as well as a silent auction, the fundraiser was a success. The event was held at the Royal King Palace in Surrey, and focused on the many different programs offered by the MFBCS, and the importance of having a permanent new home for the organization to continue to grow. The event highlighted how MFBCS has grown and evolved. From its humble beginnings as a food hamper distribution service that was run out of a team member’s garage, the organization now ensures that 600 families are assisted with food items monthly through its food bank arm,and serves many more through the programming provided through its community services arm, ASPIRE. Whether it’s through youth programming, case workers, job and language support, addictions help, or mental health support – MFBCS is constantly responding to the needs of the community, making it a unique organization that focuses on empowering and capacity building in all of its clients. MFBCS is now beginning a new

chapter in the organization’s history – that of a permanent new home. The new warehouse will be located at 12925 115 Ave in Surrey, in a new commercial space. Attendees at the fundraiser viewed mock ups and architectural drawings of the space, which showed how the warehouse will be used for both the food bank and community programming. Importantly, this new location will have the space to ensure that clients of MFBCS will now have a permanent space to go to- whether while waiting to receive their foodhampers, or meeting with caseworkers to help move their lives forward. The fundraising dinner also highlighted how important it is for the larger community to supportthis organization, whether through volunteering or donations. The organization is mainly volunteer run, and the event showcased how every volunteer’s unique skills and talents are needed in such an expansive and community focused organization. Whether you have a communications background, you’re interested in project management, counselling is your forte, or you just want to make food hampers on a Saturday morning, the organization has a need for volunteers passionate to help in any way.

On Friday night, through generous donations and sup- that this organization can purchase the warehouse. port, over $120,000 was raised for the purchase of the To learn more about MFBCS and to donate, warehouse. diately after being sworn into office, Surrey City Council convened a Regular Council meeting where a motion was introduced and passed to cancel the Surrey Newton Guildford LRT project and to begin work on extending the existing SkyTrain network in Surrey from King George Station to Langley City.Council also approved a motion

to start work on creating a Surrey Police Department and serve notice to the Federal and Provincial governments that the City of Surrey will be terminating its contract with the RCMP municipal police service. “What City Council has done is immediately deliver on the wishes of the people of Surrey,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “It

was very clear to me that with all the people I spoke to and heard from that SkyTrain and Surrey establishing its own municipal police force are what is best for our city. As the elected representatives of the citizens of Surrey, we are delivering not just what we promised to do, but we are acting on what the people have said would be best for their city.”

VICTORIA - On Saturday, BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson was asked why his party doesn’t use First Past the Post to elect its leaders. If they did, he would have finished third. He said his party’s preferen-

tial ballot system “ensures the majority of the party are comfortable supporting one particular candidate. That’s critical to running a political party.” (Nov 3, 2018)So when it comes to his own party members,

he doesn’t think it’s fair for a minority of voters to pick the leader. But when it comes to British Columbians, he still thinks a party with 40% of the votes should get 100% of the power. Perhaps

that’s because for years, the BC Liberals governed with majority governments even though they were supported by well under half of British Columbians.

Wilkinson doesn’t believe in First Past the Post for his own party, but thinks it’s okay for British Columbians

Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives call on Trudeau government to offer Asia family asylum

OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, issued a statement calling on Justin Trudeau to grant asylum to Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian who spent eight years on death row: “Canada’s humanitarian immigration system should prioritize the world’s most vulnerable, like those fleeing war and persecution. Today, Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are calling on the Trudeau government to use every mechanism at his disposal to offer the Bibi family asylum, and to encourage the Pakistani government to allow Bibi to travel freely in

light of recent negotiations with the extremist TLP party which could see authorities bar her from leaving the country. “Asia Bibi is a Pakistani Christian who spent eight years on death row on blasphemy charges. While the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn the case is heartening, the threat to Asia’s life continues. Since her case was overturned, angry mobs have been protesting and calling for her death. We know that these are not empty threats as the Federal Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, was murdered in 2011 simply for calling for Bibi’s release from prison. If action

is not taken to ensure the safety of the Bibi family, I fear that their lives will also be in danger.“The issue of minority rights has been top of mind for Conservatives. Under our previous Conservative government, then Minister Jason Kenney supported now deceased Minister Shahbaz Bhatti’s efforts to defend Asia Bibi. Senator Salma Ataullahjan has also been outspoken about Asia Bibi’s case for many years.“We must never take for granted the principles of freedom of thought, speech, and religion. We must redouble our efforts to defend them, and Justin Trudeau should act immediately to grant asylum to the Bibi family.”

Interactive session Addresses Substance Abuse and Mental Health Challenges in local youth By: Misbah Naseer Trying alcohol, marijuana, drugs, and other substances like nicotine represent a rite of passage for many young people growing up. Some may try it once or a few times and then walk away while others may become addicted leading to substance abuse. These vices do not follow boundaries of religious or cultural identities. Therefore, it is important, for both parents and youth, to discuss the effects different substances may have on and be aware of the signs of substance abuse and how to seek treatment. Given the prevalence of substance abuse amongst youth in Lower Mainland and the recent legalization of marijuana in Canada, a learning event on the topic of substance abuse for both parents and youth was held on October 28 at Strawberry Hill Library in Surrey. The event was organized by a small groups of volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds who connected on the Facebook group “Pakistani in Vancouver” last year and have since been organizing events for newcomers in BC. Ms. Anjum Khan opened the event with the introduction of the topic and the speakers. Ms. Zanbka Mailk, administrator of the Facebook group “Pakistani in Vancouver” briefly described the purpose of various events. This was followed by recitation of holy Quran by

young Farwah Arslan. The next part of the program consisted of three amazing speakers on the topic of substance abuse and mental health and was conducted by Ms. Misbah Naseer. The first speaker was Dr. Mah-i-Laqa Rafiq who presented the current statistics about substance abuse within Lower Mainland. She shared some eye-opening facts about high percentages of youth who try marijuana at ages as young as 9. She touched upon the various reasons why someone may be inclined to try various substances and how families can educate and support the youth. The next speaker was Ms. Kiran Toor who is the Vice President of Kids Play Foundation which IS a non profit organization working towards keeping kids away from the lifestyle of drugs, gangs, and violence. She described the various activities organized by KidsPlay and shared her experiences working with at-risk youth. She encouraged every youth in the audience to volunteer and get involved with the organized. The last speaker of the day was Kabir Qurban who shared his personal perspective about mental health challenges faced by immigrant youth. Kabir lightened up the mood with anecdotes and personal experiences, helping everyone relate to this very serious topic often treated as a taboo. Afterwards, a

question and answer session was held. Dr. Babra Rana, a psychiatrist and Ms. Sonia Andhi, a youth counselor also participated in the discussion and shared their insight on the topic. A short quiz with prizes was then held to test the knowledge of the youth and everyone actively participated in it. Ms. Rahila Jibril wrapped up the event thanking all the attendees and organizers including those working tirelessly behind the scene including Humaira Imtiaz, Yasera Anwar, Amira Azam, Anjum Rafiq. Overall, the event was a huge success as a high number of youth were in attendance and were fully engaged in all the talks. The event was made possible with the generous support the neighbourhood small grant by Vancouver Foundation and the organizers want to thank Solo Pizza for their support.

Iran’s Rouhani remains defiant, calls the US president ‘racist’ With US sanctions coming into effect against Iran, the national mood is one of defiance, with war games and the Iranian president hurling insults at US President Donald Trump, but trouble may be ahead. Iran has remained defiant in the face of US sanctions. President Rouhani had harsh words for the US president and claimed that US exemptions to sanctions on oil issued to eight nations were a victory for Iran. Iran also scheduled one of their largest military exercises of the year on the same day as US sanctions kicked back in. Nevertheless, trouble is on the horizon, as the European Union has yet to come up with a promised bypass to the US banking

UNICEF warns intense fighting is now ‘dangerously close to al-Thawra hospital’ in strategic Yemeni port city. The battle for the rebel-held city of Hodeidah in western Yemen has placed dozens of children in a hospital “at imminent risk of death”, according to the United Nations’ children’s agency (UNICEF). The urgent warning on Tuesday came amid reports of fierce clashes between pro-government forces, which are backed by a Saudi-UAE-led military coalition, and Houthi rebels near the strategic Red Sea port, where hundreds of thousands of civilians could be trapped as war closes in. “Intense fighting in the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah is now dangerously close to al-Thawra hospital - putting the lives of 59 children, including 25 in the intensive care

unit, at imminent risk of death,” UNICEF said in a statement. The agency said that medical staff and patients in the hospital in southern Hodeidah city, just 500 metres from the port, heard heavy bombing and gunfire. “Access to and from the hospital, the only functioning one in the area, is now imperilled,” it said.

‘Halt rushed Rohingya repatriation,’ UN urges Myanmar, Bangladesh Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed to start repatriating Rohingya to Rakhine state in November. Bangladesh and Myanmar should drop plans to start repatriating hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees to Rakhine State as they face a “high risk of persecution”, a top United Nations’ human rights investigator has warned. More than 700,000 Rohingya refugees crossed into Bangladesh from western Myanmar after a sweeping military crackdown in August 2017. On October 30, Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed to begin the return of the refugees in mid-November but the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, said conditions in Rakhine State were “not yet conducive for returns”. “I urge the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar to halt these rushed plans for repatriation,” Yanghee Lee, UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, said

10 Quick Facts on Remembrance Day

R 1.

emembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.— on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. 2.From 1921 to 1930, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. In 1931, Alan Neill, Member of Parliament for Comox–Alberni, introduced a bill to observe Armistice Day only on November 11. Passed by the House of Commons, the bill also changed the name to “Remembrance Day”. The first Remembrance Day was observed on November 11, 1931. 3.Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 1,500,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice. 4.The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to provide assistance to Veterans. 5.Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada. It is also a statutory holiday in three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) and in six provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador). 6.The national ceremony is held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Governor General of Canada presides over the ceremony. It is also attended by the Prime Minister, other government officials, representatives of Veterans’ organizations, diplomatic representatives, other dignitaries, Vet-

erans as well as the general public. 7.In advance of the ceremony, long columns of Veterans, Canadian Armed Forces members, RCMP officers, and cadets march to the memorial lead by a pipe band and a colour guard. At the end of the ceremony, they march away to officially close the ceremony. 8.Some of the 54 Commonwealth member states, such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, observe the tradition of Remembrance Day on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Other nations observe a solemn day but at different dates. For example, ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand on April 25. In South Africa, Poppy Day is marked on the Sunday that falls closest to November 11. 9.Many nations that are not members of the Commonwealth also observe Remembrance Day on November 11, including France, Belgium and Poland. 10.The United States used to commemorate Armistice Day on November 11. However, in 1954 they changed the name to Veterans Day. The Poppy The Poppy Campaign begins on the last Friday in October and continues through to November 11th. The Lapel Poppy can be worn every day of the Poppy Campaign and is removed at the end of the Remembrance Day ceremony. Many people place their poppy on a wreath or at the base of the cenotaph or memorial as a sign of respect at the end of the ceremony. The poppy may be worn at commemorative events throughout the year, such as anniversaries of significant battles, a memorial service, and other similar occasions. (Event organizers should seek advice from the Royal Canadian Legion on the use of the poppy for events outside of the Poppy Campaign.) The Royal Canadian Legion suggests that the poppy be worn on the left lapel of a garment and as close to the heart as possible. The poppy became widespread in Europe

after soils in France and Belgium became rich in lime from debris and rubble from the fighting during the First World War. These little red flowers also flourished around the gravesites of the war dead. In 1915, John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Artillery, famously made note of this phenomenon in his poem, In Flanders Fields. On Saturday November 9, 1918, two days before the Armistice, Moina Michael was on duty in the reading room at the YMCA Overseas War Secretaries’ headquarters in New York—a place where U.S. servicemen would often gather with friends and family to say their goodbyes before they went overseas. After reading McCrae’s poem, Moina made a personal pledge to always wear the red poppy of Flanders Fields as a sign of remembrance and for “keeping the faith with all who died.” In 1920, Anna Guérin—the French Poppy Lady—attended the national American Legion convention as a representative of France’s YMCA Secretariat. She was inspired by Moina Michael’s idea of the poppy as a memorial flower and felt that the scope of the Memorial Poppy could be expanded to help the needy. She suggested that artificial poppies could be made and sold as a way of raising money for the benefit of orphaned children and others who had suffered greatly as a result of the war. In 1921, Madame Guérin visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association of Canada (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising; which it did on July 5th of that year. Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion’s most important programs. The money raised from donations provides direct assistance for Veterans in financial distress, as well as funding for medical equipment, medical research, home services, long term care facilities and many other purposes.

MYC hosted its 18th Annual Fundraising Dinner at Crystal York Centre

By: Abdul Kareem Husain In the Holy Quraan Surah Al-Bakarah (2:83), it states, ‘And speak good, and be good with people. Because being good to people is the utmost legacy you can leave behind.’ On October 27,the MYC hosted its 18th Annual Fundraising Dinner at Crystal York Banquet Hall. The beautiful audience was filled with families and especially the Youth. The Program started with a Welcome address and outline of the Program done by the President of MYC, Brother Kareem Husain. Then the Master of Ceremonies Brother Ahmed Salih introduced the Quraan Reciter, Brother Furquan Memon and the translation was done by Brother Yusuf Qayum. It was a beautiful recitation for the Youth and their parents. We opened the Program with the recitation of the Quraan to give praise to God. A fun Knowledge game was done by Jannat, Suhaib, Faisal and Yusuf. They read the questions to the children in the audience who answered it and won prizes. It was very interactive and all the children were enthusiastic. There was a spectacular taekwondo performance presented by the Youth of MYC which was led by Black Belt Instructors Adam and his sister Alia Ishmail. The hard work and dedication of the Youth were truly inspiring with them displaying poise and discipline. The guest speaker was a motivational speaker/songwriter Mr. Dawud Wharnsby Ali who played live music for the audience and inspired

the Youth and their families. He performed his famous songs with new hits as well. This was followed by the Fundraising portion where the audience gave generously. The money raised will go towards Youth programs and maintenance of the building. Sonia Andhi, who ran in the last election for Surrey School Trustee gave an impactful speech about the importance of diversity, Family, Youth and working together as one community. It is written in the Holy Quraan, ‘“For those who believe and do good deeds, these are the dwellers of the Paradise, in it they shall abide.” (Chapter 2: Verse 82). In recognition to the many years of volunteer services in the community and society, MYC presented the GEHLEN family and the SHAHEEM family with the ‘Lifetime Appreciation Award.’ These 2 families have been major supporters of the MYC and always give a helping hand to anyone they come across either by financially or with kind words. A major thank you to Shamim Haider and Uzma from Carzone Motors who sponsored the iPad which Rayaan won. Also to the vendors, Simar Pabla, WorkBC and Modesty Hijab and Fashion by Rahihan Ferdous. The President concluded the Program with a Vote of Thanks and requested everyone to lend their continuous support to the MYC. There was a person who envisioned a place where Youth from all ages, religions and ethnic backgrounds can come, play sports, engage in

social activities and meet new friends. This person was Asgar Husain who was the Imam/Regional Prison Muslim Chaplain for British Columbia. To present, The MYC is stronger than ever - with many events for the youth such as Sports Days, BBQ events, Self Defense classes, Islamic Study classes, Food Festivals and

Family Day events. It is a unique facility which caters for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of our youth. The MYC runs on volunteer work. It is the hard work; time and effort of individuals in our community which help the MYC strive.

We have many festivals coming ina year. These three festivals are festivals of different cultures. There are a lot of sales going on as well. The things, such as decorations, are prepared way before the event date. Common One thing very common for any festival celebrated throughout the world is that people become joyous. We all clean our homes, throwaway junk, think of others who are less fortunate and try to include them too. We bring new clothes, household items and any major things we were waiting to buy. We decorate our house, wear good clothes and dress up. We also cook many items. We call family over and friends to celebrate with us. There is a lot of joy surrounding our celebration. There is a lot of positivity and kindness surrounding our festival too. Even if we have some small or big problems in our life, we put them on a pause and feel less depressed. Everybody celebrates according to their means but everyone is happy. Traditions All our festivals, rituals, these traditions are passed from generations to generations. The children see, observe their parents with family and friends. They participate every year, learn some things and then begin to follow them. When they become parents, they follow and their children follow on. Some children follow, some have different opinions but the spirit of festival affects all. Diversity How about as a parent, we make it a point ot know the detail story behind each Eid? We explain them to our children, the story and moral behind them. We cannot celebrate other religions holidays but we need to provide for an alternative to our children. Our respect for other peo-

ple’s choice of practicing their religion does not mean we need to follow it out of insecurity or acceptance in the community. We need our children to grow up with fond memories that don’t require disobeying God. World: A Global Village We live and work in a modern world surrounded by technology and a shaping environment where everything is one click away. The world of communication is powerful with phone, internet, facebook, instagram etc. We work with people of all nationalities and religions. It is necessary for all of us to work in harmony, peace and co-ordination. This can be achieved by broad-minded tolerance, respectful attitude. This is necessary for the progress of humanity and nations at large. History is a witness to this. This must be taught from childhood. Info: Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui appeals PM Imran to help her get out of prison

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani woman jailed in the US, on Tuesday requested Prime Minister Imran Khan for her release, diplomatic sources told Dunya News. According to diplomatic sources, Siddiqui wrote a letter to PM Imran Khan which she handed over to Pakistani Consul General during his visit to the prison. In her letter to the prime minister, she said that Imran Khan had supported her in the

past and appealed the premier for help to get her release from the jail. “I want to get out of prison, my imprisonment in the US is illegal as I was kidnapped and taken to the US,” she said. She further said she has always considered him as one of her biggest heroes and wish to see him as the Khalifa of all Muslims. He should be careful of the munafiq around him. She further threw challenge of debate to anyone who has doubts on Imran Khan.

In September 2010, Aafia Siddiqui, the female Pakistani scientist convicted of attempting to kill US military personnel, had been sentenced to 86 years in prison. Siddiqui was interrogated by US officials in Afghanistan when she grabbed a rifle and opened fire, shouting “death to Americans”. Prosecutors in New York had called her an al Qaeda sympathiser and sought life imprisonment. Source: dunyanews.tv

‘Dr Aafia subjected to physical, sexual abuse in US detention center’ By Hasnaat Mailk. Published: June 20, 2018 ISLAMABAD: A confidential report prepared by Pakistan’s consul general in Houston, United States of America, of her visit to Dr Aafia Siddiqui claimed that she was subjected to physical and sexual abuse during her ongoing detention. Consul General Aisha Farooqui visited Aafia at the Federal Medical Center in Carswell, Texas. The report recommends diplomatic authorities to take up the case at the highest levels to find a way

for her repatriation so that she can serve her remaining sentence in Pakistan, where her modesty and privacy would not be interfered with. Aafia’s sister Fowzia Siddiqui submitted the report of the consul general’s May 23 meeting with her. The report presents details of the miserable state of Aafia, who is being detained, and details of her struggles to protect her dignity, integrity and respect paint a different picture altogether.

It is recommended that a detailed note be sent to the US Department of Justice for an inquiry into the allegations of physical and sexual abuse Aafia spoke of. CG Farooqui also suggested suggested a formal request to be made to the US Department of Justice to restrict male staff members into her unit and to ensure her safety. Aafia has accused the male staffer of urinating on her possessions. https://tribune.com.pk/story/

The 5th annual fundraiser dinner of The Citizens Foundation (TCF) Vancouver

By: Usman Nadeem The fifth annual fundraiser dinner of The Citizens Foundation (TCF) Vancouver was held at Taj Park Convention Centre on Saturday November 3rd, 2018. Pakistani Canadian scientist Dr Naweed Syed from Calgary, Alberta joined us for the evening. As always, TCF Vancouver fundraiser was a big success as it managed to attract almost 200 guests; by the end of event, TCFVancouver was able to raise over $20,000 in donations to sponsor TCF schools in extremely impoverished and backward areas of Pakistan. TCF is Pakistan’s largest nonprofit organization working in the field of education. It builds and manages primary and secondary schools in rural areas and urban slums in Pakistan. TCF has a very unique operat-

ing model that has achieved remarkable success over the past decade. As of Nov 2018, TCF has expanded its network to over 1,482 operational school units, which is currently providing quality education to more than 220,000 students nationwide. TCF-Canada, one of its international chapters, helps primarily by collecting donations from expatriates and various other organizations. It is registered, with Canada Revenue Agency and audit by KPMG. The TCF-Vancouver 5th annual Fundraiser Dinner was a huge success. TCF Canada’s President Mr. Sajid Salman attended the memorable evening organized by the young TCFVancouver team. Mr. Waseem Javed - a volunteer with TCF Vancouver - presented to the audience regarding expenditure of

donations and TCF schools. The mission of this sub-chapter is to raise awareness and promote the TCF brand and organize annual fundraisers targeting the Greater Vancouver audience. All donations raised from the fundraiser goes to support the annual operating cost of two existing TCF schools in Pakistan. The event began with a brief update on TCF Vancouver by Usman Nadeem, Vancouver Chapter President. Mr Hyder Zach Masum, board member of TCF Canada presented about TCF’s impact in Pakistan. After dinner, very talented singer Maria Hashmi from Chicago performed with Amarjeet Singh and set the stage for the evening’s entertainment till late in night. Congratulations to TCF-Vancouver for not only achieving their goal but also for hosting a memorable experience for all involved to reflect the ongoing efforts of The Citizens Foundation.

Allama Iqbal, Pakistan And Imran Khan

D

By: Farooq Rai uring my recent experience with translating Allama Iqbal’s poetry, I learned what an arduous task it is to properly translate Urdu poetry into English. I wanted the English translations of my calligraphy of Allama’s verses for visitors to the first ever Pakistani Peace & Harmony Art Exhibition during the renowned World Festival in Richmond. I wanted to share the message of Allama to interested Canadians. I suppose the difficulty lies in the fact that there are sometimes several meanings to each word in English. One also needs to be considerate of the contemporary context in which the text is applied, for example, to be mindful of gender neutral words etc. I like to share the following excerpts from a previous news article “Iqbal’s Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa a contemporary translation,” by Saleha Riaz about the contemporary translation of Allama Iqbal’s poems, published in The Express Tribune on May 30th, 2014. “Fans of the great poet Allama Iqbal in London were in store for a rare treat when “Shikwa and Jawaab-e-Shikwa – a contemporary translation” by Professor Muhammad Sharif Baqa was launched on Monday evening. With a symposium chaired by

journalist Syed Talat Hussain and a qawwali performance by the Hussain brothers.. The translation of both poems took over a year to complete and effort was put into retaining the poetic rhythm and nuances of the Urdu language. The preface to the book has been written by Professor Katherine Schimmel of Harvard University. The foreword is written by former cricketer turned politician Imran Khan and the introduction is by anthropologist Professor Akbar S Ahmed. Journalist, Syed Talat Hussain said he equated Iqbal’s poetry with the country’s national anthem – something its citizens recite often but don’t really understand. Hussain ended the symposium by saying that we have much to learn from Iqbal. “You can’t change the nation by merely tweeting, there is a world out there that beckons you,” concluded Hussain. This is evident in Shikwa: Kyun Ziyaan Kaar Banun, Sood Framosh Rahun Fikr-e-Farda Na Karun, Mahwe-Ghum-e-Dosh Rahun Naale Bulbul Ke Sunoon, Aur Hama Tan Gosh Rahun Humwana Main Bhi Koi Gul Hun Ke Khamosh Rahun Jurrat Aamoz Miri Taabe-Sakhun Hai Mujh Ko Shikwah Allah Se Khakam Badahan Hai Mujh Ko

Translation:

Why should I waste my poetic talent, In lamenting my glorious past, yet ignoring my bright future? How can I be indifferent to the doleful cries of my nation? O my dear friend, I cannot be tongue-tied like a flower. It is truly my poetic ability that gives me the courage to express my feelings, May I be cursed should I ever complain to God!” Allama’s anniversary is on the 9th of November. Now let us all rekindle our own aspirations and amal (actions) while keeping his message and vision in mind for ‘all time’ and not simply to celebrate another ‘day’. It is also worth emphasizing that Imran Khan wrote the forward of the book. Those who admire and count on Imran Khan to deliver should know that Iqbal’s message and vision is a universal and for all time. Pakistan is faced with multifaceted challenges. There is an urgent need to revert to Iqbal’s teachings and philosophy more than ever before. While understandably one is concerned about Pakistan’s progress, we as Canadians of Pakistani origin here also need to be better prepared to face some difficult issues and challenges. Our faith and cultural iden-

tity is under increased scrutiny and regrettably its portrayal is sometimes biased and erroneous. We ought to promote our unique cultural identity and heritage to shed better light on our comminunty and take part in cross-cultural exchanges that promote diversity and inclusion. Our local community leadership and organizations will be more effective if we start comprehending and practicing Allama Iqbal’s vision, mission and message, while engaging in community development work. I remain optimistic and inshAllah, will continue to hope for the best.
